:00:59. > :01:06.athletics Championships. Here in the beautiful old town of the heart of
:01:07. > :01:17.Z?rich, quaint and traditional sit side-by-side with the alter modern.
:01:18. > :01:23.Tonight, we have a contrast as well as we welcome the speed Demons as
:01:24. > :01:31.well as those who prefer the longer haul. Can Mo Farah put his troubles
:01:32. > :01:41.behind him and when yet another gold on the track. This is world
:01:42. > :01:48.domination for Farah. He is the world champion. And from 10,000
:01:49. > :01:53.metres to ten seconds, the 100 metres final is a sight to behold
:01:54. > :01:59.and tonight will be no different with British eyes on the main prize.
:02:00. > :02:08.Chambers now quickly into his running. Desiree Henry has run
:02:09. > :02:13.really well. So whether it is staying power or explosive power, as
:02:14. > :02:27.you would expect in Switzerland, timing is everything. Welcome once
:02:28. > :02:32.more to Letzigrund Stadium. I would say high winds but they have been
:02:33. > :02:41.described as storm conditions. It is in the right direction for her hair,
:02:42. > :02:46.not necessarily in the studio. The wind conditions have been described
:02:47. > :02:52.as dangerous, too dangerous to start the programme on time. Competitions
:02:53. > :03:01.will start at 5:30pm. Those clouds look ominous. They could be in
:03:02. > :03:10.Austria in 30 minutes. We have had all sorts of stuff blowing around.
:03:11. > :03:14.Cooley and the gang have had to have a lie down. Have you known anything
:03:15. > :03:23.like this at an athletics meeting because the programme has had to be
:03:24. > :03:30.put back because of wind. I remember a meeting in 1989 when the wind was
:03:31. > :03:36.so strong it picked up the high jump mat and rolled it into the middle of
:03:37. > :03:40.the men's 5000 metres field. The men's to catalogue has been hanging
:03:41. > :03:46.around since lunch time because the pole vaults was put back. That is an
:03:47. > :03:51.event that could be dangerous in the wind. It is very dangerous. It could
:03:52. > :03:57.be very dangerous on landing. I have two say, I have never witnessed
:03:58. > :04:04.anything like it. Normally, it is rain. We have never had wind like
:04:05. > :04:09.this. It is incredible. I think he is trying to tell as it is windy.
:04:10. > :04:15.Maybe we might have to leave the stadium because it is too dangerous.
:04:16. > :04:20.They would not let the crowd in an hour ago. In all seriousness, there
:04:21. > :04:27.are things that could blow around. They now believe that the worst of
:04:28. > :04:31.it has blown over. I know that Steve Backley was throwing the javelin the
:04:32. > :04:35.day that you were watching at home and the high jump mat was making its
:04:36. > :04:43.way onto the track. Do you remember that day? I remember it well. It
:04:44. > :04:49.wasn't dissimilar. It was a lovely day, quite benign, no wind at all
:04:50. > :04:53.and I was leading and then the wind picked up. Bits of fluff going
:04:54. > :04:58.through the air and you were thinking what is going on? And all
:04:59. > :05:04.of a sudden the wind picked up. I was quite pleased, it was into our
:05:05. > :05:09.faces and so it meant that nobody was going to beat me. I took my
:05:10. > :05:15.boots off and was watching, laughing at what was going on. It was
:05:16. > :05:20.properly stronger than right now. It is dangerous. I do feel for the pole
:05:21. > :05:28.vaulters, halfway through the competition. Some athletes have gone
:05:29. > :05:33.out. Quite serious consequences for potential medallists and the
:05:34. > :05:38.eventual result as it may unfold. You can see that family braving it
:05:39. > :05:43.on the top tier, probably not the place to be. We are actually on the
:05:44. > :05:47.top tier. If you are down nearly ripped the track, it is probably a
:05:48. > :06:02.bit calmer. Nevertheless, they have delayed it until 5:30pm. -- nearer
:06:03. > :06:08.to the track. It gives us time to relive that incredible performance
:06:09. > :06:13.last night from Jo Pavey. This morning, I put the Radio 1, she has
:06:14. > :06:19.been doing interviews all day. She is amazed that people are so
:06:20. > :06:26.interested. She has created such a buzz. People are so inspired I have.
:06:27. > :06:31.A lot of that is because of the person that she is. She didn't run
:06:32. > :06:36.lightning fast but she timed it perfectly and beat the people on the
:06:37. > :06:42.night. It is because you can identify with her so well and she is
:06:43. > :06:48.such a nice person. Last night, it was late, she snuck into the room
:06:49. > :06:54.she was sharing with Goldie Sayers, she didn't even take her kit off,
:06:55. > :07:02.she went to bed in her kit so she wouldn't wake her up. She said, I am
:07:03. > :07:11.not smelly, though. She was so modest. She wouldn't want us to keep
:07:12. > :07:16.reliving it but I think we should because there is no action on. We
:07:17. > :07:19.will join it with about nine or ten minutes to go. Steve Cram and
:07:20. > :07:37.Brendan Foster. COMMENTATOR: There goes the champion once again
:07:38. > :07:41.trying to stretch it out. She has got something in her legs. She looks
:07:42. > :07:48.as though when she gets to the front she can open up a few yards. The two
:07:49. > :07:55.British athletes Beth Potter and Jo Pavey, they have both been through
:07:56. > :07:59.the Commonwealth Games. Jo Pavey acquitted herself very well. The
:08:00. > :08:03.rest of the athletes have been getting ready and preparing for this
:08:04. > :08:08.championship. The British athletes have been getting ready for the
:08:09. > :08:14.Commonwealth Games. That sometimes is a handicap. It is easier to just
:08:15. > :08:22.run one championship. It is harder to run twice. The twice winner of
:08:23. > :08:27.the New York marathon hits the front for the first time. She sees the
:08:28. > :08:32.comfortable sign, seven laps to go. One mile and three quarters. She
:08:33. > :08:40.knows exactly how it feels. It was around this point, around about 3000
:08:41. > :08:50.metres to go that the winner forced it on and managed to drop Jo Pavey.
:08:51. > :08:58.It was a different race. There wasn't a big group like this. We
:08:59. > :09:03.have the two three French athletes. We have Beth Potter and Jo Pavey.
:09:04. > :09:13.Keeping an eye on things. Tucked in the middle, haven't seen too much of
:09:14. > :09:18.her, on the curb now, almost steps on the curb, has to take a couple of
:09:19. > :09:24.steps inside. Doesn't get an advantage. They are all queueing up
:09:25. > :09:29.behind the leader. You can feel the tension growing. You can feel that
:09:30. > :09:34.something has got to give. Somebody out of the group has to push on and
:09:35. > :09:43.try to break up the group. The two British athletes have run well
:09:44. > :09:45.there. They have acquitted themselves extremely well after the
:09:46. > :09:52.Commonwealth Games. That is Beth Potter, behind her Jo Pavey,
:09:53. > :09:59.following her lead this time. Six laps to go, now it is time to get
:10:00. > :10:04.serious. Now it is time to think about the race plan. The athletes in
:10:05. > :10:10.this group, one or two of them are going to stick with the resolve that
:10:11. > :10:18.the coaches and they have agreed beforehand. When to make the run,
:10:19. > :10:25.you decide. In second place in second place the 3000 metres for her
:10:26. > :10:31.country. It is less to go than that now. She couldn't keep up with the
:10:32. > :10:35.pace of Hassan but she acquitted herself well. This place might not
:10:36. > :10:40.be enough to hold off some of the others. She looks as though she is
:10:41. > :10:47.ready to go. She looks as though she wants to force this on. Doesn't have
:10:48. > :10:55.the courage yet. Maybe too far out. Jo Pavey once more just slots in
:10:56. > :11:00.towards the back of the group. At this point, I would like to see her
:11:01. > :11:06.being a little closer to the front. Once you get to the front, you lose
:11:07. > :11:14.15 metres and you have to work hard to get that back. Duarte, the
:11:15. > :11:20.reigning European Cross country champion is leaving the race. It
:11:21. > :11:26.looks like her hamstring. Onto the inside, taking no further part.
:11:27. > :11:31.There is too many in that group. The two Portuguese athletes looked
:11:32. > :11:40.strong in there. Jo Pavey and Beth Potter are looking good in there.
:11:41. > :11:45.They know that Britain is still in contention. We see them running
:11:46. > :11:50.together so often. Often in marathons and on shorter distances
:11:51. > :11:54.on the track. I wouldn't know who is the fastest sprinter. You do not
:11:55. > :11:59.often see them in a position where they are sprinting for the finish.
:12:00. > :12:04.At the 200 meter point there are far too many for comfort. It is time to
:12:05. > :12:11.start making some decisions. Pushing and shoving. Bloodstream in down the
:12:12. > :12:16.legs of one of the athletes from the knees, she has been spiked already.
:12:17. > :12:24.Look at the pushing and shoving. Something has to give. If anything,
:12:25. > :12:32.they are slowing it up. Just four laps to go. Jo Pavey moving up on
:12:33. > :12:44.the outside sensing the danger. Felix, then the other French
:12:45. > :12:56.athlete. Just a little sense of pace. Beth Potter is still in there.
:12:57. > :13:09.The French athlete is having a good run having seen her Duarte drop out.
:13:10. > :13:16.Jo Pavey decided she would rather do it on the straight and on the bend.
:13:17. > :13:20.She gets closer. This is the closest she has been to the lead in this
:13:21. > :13:26.race. A lot of the British fans in the stadium, who watched her run so
:13:27. > :13:32.magnificently in the Commonwealth Games. She will lock up, you are
:13:33. > :13:39.allowed to look up and see three laps to go. She was second last
:13:40. > :13:44.time. The champion is ahead of her and she looks ready to go. The
:13:45. > :13:59.champion now it's the front. Felix of Portugal and her team-mate Sarah
:14:00. > :14:03.Moreira. Two French women, two Portuguese and there were two Brits
:14:04. > :14:11.but Beth Potter is starting to struggle. It is Marrero who is still
:14:12. > :14:16.leading. The dark blue of France coming through. Jo Pavey is sensing
:14:17. > :14:24.that now the race is starting to move. They approach 1000 metres to
:14:25. > :14:31.go. Calvin for the first time puts her foot down. She starts to stretch
:14:32. > :14:37.them from the front. Finola Britton of Ireland is losing pace and
:14:38. > :14:43.momentum. Jo Pavey is in fifth place as the race starts to go. Calvin
:14:44. > :14:48.means it is for real and they are chasing after her into the home
:14:49. > :14:54.straight. Felix is working hard in second place. Jo Pavey in a
:14:55. > :14:59.magnificent fifth and coming strongly. She has never been as
:15:00. > :15:04.close to the front as this. She realises that the race is on as she
:15:05. > :15:08.moves into third place, a magnificent position. A magnificent
:15:09. > :15:14.move. The champion looks to be beaten in fourth place. Jo Pavey is
:15:15. > :15:24.now in third place with Moreira and Calvin ahead of her. She is forcing
:15:25. > :15:33.the pace but she is not sprinting away from them. Jo Pavey looks
:15:34. > :15:40.comfortable, gritting her teeth, four of them well clear, they look
:15:41. > :15:52.in contention for the medals. Calvyn Justus her head down and goes again.
:15:53. > :15:57.Jo Pavey strikes again as she did in the Commonwealth Games. Getting
:15:58. > :16:03.ready to hit the front as she comes down, she knows a fast last lap is
:16:04. > :16:12.what she needs to win this one. Calvin Prepare for this one but Jo
:16:13. > :16:17.Pavey is tracking her. Jo Is running a magnificent race, she is running
:16:18. > :16:23.herself into the middle, and move from Jo Pavey, she has got to keep
:16:24. > :16:46.now with the pace. Calvin In second place. Jo, has she got another dear?
:16:47. > :16:53.-- gear. Calvin Of France, Jo Pavey of great Britain. Jo Pavey kicks
:16:54. > :16:59.again, has Calvin got anything left? She is the big danger. Jo Pavey, 40
:17:00. > :17:04.years of age, nobody has ever won a medal at the European Championships
:17:05. > :17:10.at that age. Jo Pavey has never won at a major championships in long
:17:11. > :17:16.career. The arms are going, she is ticking away. There she goes, a
:17:17. > :17:22.glorious, glorious run from Jo Pavey. Her whole career has been
:17:23. > :17:32.about this moment, it is gold Jo Pavey, she is the champion. Jo Pavey
:17:33. > :17:43.has finally come of age at the age of 40. Can you say that? That was
:17:44. > :17:49.absolutely fantastic. STUDIO: That was an incredible gold medal
:17:50. > :17:52.performance last night. If you are wondering why we are watching that
:17:53. > :17:56.it is because the programme there has been delayed by about 45
:17:57. > :18:01.minutes, we are due to start at half past five, we were due to start at
:18:02. > :18:06.4:45pm but the winds are storm level here. We are not being dramatic,
:18:07. > :18:13.look at this, that was the warm up track. We have just heard the story
:18:14. > :18:16.from Paula Radcliffe about the high jump match going into the track of
:18:17. > :18:24.the 1500 metres at you years ago, that is what can happen. They want
:18:25. > :18:27.to make sure everything is safe. Christine Ohuruogu out there warming
:18:28. > :18:33.up to get ready for her race, there she is, she is picking up her bag
:18:34. > :18:37.and wandering off to safety. We have heard that they have also cancelled
:18:38. > :18:42.all the medal ceremonies this evening partly I imagine to create
:18:43. > :18:45.space in the programme to try to get everything in, because tonight is a
:18:46. > :18:50.massive mate, the 100-metre final and semifinal for the men and the
:18:51. > :18:59.women, and the ten K featuring Mo Farah as well. It is jam-packed and
:19:00. > :19:02.a delay like this affects everybody, particularly the athletes who are
:19:03. > :19:08.waiting to get out there, they have timed the warm up to perfection so
:19:09. > :19:13.mentally it is quite challenging. Folic clay it is quite challenging
:19:14. > :19:20.in here I can tell you. Let's have a look at the new programme. We will
:19:21. > :19:22.start with the men's 400 metres semifinals but they will be coming
:19:23. > :20:01.at the revised time of 5:30pm. The discus final could be
:20:02. > :20:23.interesting! They have had to delay the pole
:20:24. > :20:29.vault as well for the decathlon on so who knows where they will be at
:20:30. > :20:34.that point. The only medal won so far, called for Great Britain, Jo
:20:35. > :20:42.Pavey, I was able to catch up with her, a baby in demand lady I must
:20:43. > :20:49.say. Jo Pavey, nobody has ever won a medal at the European champions at
:20:50. > :20:54.her age. Her whole career has been about this moment, it is gold for Jo
:20:55. > :21:00.Pavey, she is the champion. Everybody wants to hear your story,
:21:01. > :21:04.are you surprised by that? I am shocked by the interest, it has
:21:05. > :21:09.taken me by surprise, everyone has been so kind, I am very lucky. Why
:21:10. > :21:15.do you think there has been so much interest? When I was a young
:21:16. > :21:19.athlete, 25 years old, going to training camps all over the world
:21:20. > :21:27.people could not relate to that, now I am 40 and a busy mother people can
:21:28. > :21:31.relate to that. I feel so happy, to have a supportive husband, two
:21:32. > :21:35.lovely little children, it makes me feel so happy, I feel I can now
:21:36. > :21:38.enjoy my running and I think just keeping busy all day rather than
:21:39. > :21:44.sitting around has given me more endurance. It is almost by being
:21:45. > :21:54.less selfish you have become more successful? Yes I wish I realised
:21:55. > :21:57.that. When you get to a Championships and you are arresting
:21:58. > :22:01.a bit more before the race you can benefit from that because you have
:22:02. > :22:07.not been doing that. That brings something more to your performance.
:22:08. > :22:10.I remember hearing Paula Radcliffe say that she would say the name of
:22:11. > :22:17.her child over and over again, when she was feeling the pain, do you do
:22:18. > :22:21.the same? I know how she feels, I am thinking about my children, when I
:22:22. > :22:25.am out there racing, all the commitments we have put into it as a
:22:26. > :22:30.family I am thinking I have got to make it worth it and that gives me
:22:31. > :22:33.more determination. Jessica Ennis-Hill has been watching, what
:22:34. > :22:37.would you say to her, what advice would you give to her as a new
:22:38. > :22:43.mother wondering how she will do this, how she will juggle nappies
:22:44. > :22:50.and training? I was down the track running the most horrendously slow
:22:51. > :22:55.times, it seemed pointless, but I kept plugging away, I was not
:22:56. > :22:59.hitting targets but I kept going, she will be fine because she is so
:23:00. > :23:04.talented and organised and experienced. I wish her a lot of
:23:05. > :23:14.luck. There is a wide age of ages and experiences -- wide range. To
:23:15. > :23:19.still be on the team and be there with them, the old and the young, we
:23:20. > :23:22.are all very much inspiring one another and encouraging one another
:23:23. > :23:27.and it is a great team spirit. It is fun to still be part of that. Was
:23:28. > :23:32.there ever any doubt in your mind that you would be able to do the ten
:23:33. > :23:35.and then the fight? I have experienced doubling a couple of
:23:36. > :23:39.times and I really wanted to do that, I would not take place in the
:23:40. > :23:46.team if I was not intending to do it. I was always intending to do
:23:47. > :23:49.that and it is a privileged position to have another chance to do that. I
:23:50. > :23:59.will recover as best as I can, eat lots of food and see if I can get
:24:00. > :24:06.ready, get as ready as I can. What a lovely lady. So appreciative of her
:24:07. > :24:10.success but also of the support network around her. Although she is
:24:11. > :24:15.keen to stress that she juggles, she is a mother, but she feels
:24:16. > :24:19.privileged that her and Gavin get to spend so much time with the children
:24:20. > :24:25.because they are in the team together dedicated towards her
:24:26. > :24:33.success. Yes, it has never just been about Jo, it is always Jo and Gavin,
:24:34. > :24:38.and now the children as well. She is right, she could not do it without
:24:39. > :24:42.them, by having that support around her she knows that her children have
:24:43. > :24:45.always been very well looked after which enables her to go down to the
:24:46. > :24:50.track and focus on her training and do what she needs to do. And because
:24:51. > :24:56.she is so happy, with how happy she is there with Emelec. Because of
:24:57. > :24:59.that she is running with pure enjoyment of being able to go out
:25:00. > :25:03.and do that, I think when you are a very happy in your personal life
:25:04. > :25:09.that translates to running well on the track and that is what she is
:25:10. > :25:13.discovering. Sometimes we do overlook our, people who have been
:25:14. > :25:17.in the sport long time, we are always looking for the next use,
:25:18. > :25:21.someone to be exciting and fresh, but she has been around a long time
:25:22. > :25:28.and it is nice to see perseverance does pay off and you can get gold
:25:29. > :25:31.medals even at her age. Yes she has definitely not just been
:25:32. > :25:43.discovered. The wealth of experience, the competitions she has
:25:44. > :25:49.represented Great Britain in. She has done very well in Olympic
:25:50. > :25:56.Games, featuring in the top ten three times. She is not an overnight
:25:57. > :26:01.ex-success by any imagination but longevity in any sport is very
:26:02. > :26:04.difficult to achieve. Yes, we talk about people who still might be in
:26:05. > :26:08.the sport and running very well at 40 years of age, but generally they
:26:09. > :26:15.were people who came to the sport late. Jo Was breaking English ghost
:26:16. > :26:20.records back in 1988 as a 14-year-old. Then she had time out
:26:21. > :26:26.from the sport, came back in 1997 for Athens, and has pretty much been
:26:27. > :26:34.a regular on the team ever since then. She has just always been Jo,
:26:35. > :26:42.very open and friendly. Everyone goes to her for advice. Emily
:26:43. > :26:45.Pidgeon, who broke her English schools record, says that she wrote
:26:46. > :26:53.to her afterwards to say how pleased she was. That is the kind of person
:26:54. > :26:57.she is, so many of the youngsters in the team look to her not only for
:26:58. > :27:02.inspiration but also advice, almost like a big sister. What do you think
:27:03. > :27:10.of this training session, and I ended in a shape, what time could I
:27:11. > :27:14.run? They respected her. Having the young athletes are around someone
:27:15. > :27:18.who has such balance in their lives, for those whose first championship
:27:19. > :27:25.it is a must see that you can balance your life and you don't have
:27:26. > :27:29.to get neurotic about things, what a positive influence she is. A lot of
:27:30. > :27:33.athletes come into the sport, especially if they are extremely
:27:34. > :27:37.talented, they expect to be completely funded, full-time
:27:38. > :27:41.athletes, but she is showing that sometimes keeping your studies going
:27:42. > :27:46.or finding a part-time job or doing something may help de-stress, keep
:27:47. > :27:55.everything in perspective and balance. It was an absolute pleasure
:27:56. > :27:58.seeing her in the last few weeks flourishing in front of an audience
:27:59. > :28:03.which appreciates it. Hearing the stories from back home, I am sure
:28:04. > :28:07.you have seen the newspapers, people talking about her that would not
:28:08. > :28:10.necessarily, in the week the Premier League is about to start by the
:28:11. > :28:16.way, talking about an athlete who has done what she has done, it is
:28:17. > :28:21.brilliant for the sport. I had a tweet from Lee Hurst, I know she is
:28:22. > :28:25.a fan of sport anyway but he said he was touched by her performance and
:28:26. > :28:30.to pass on his congratulations. Every walk of life has been affected
:28:31. > :28:37.by this performance in a positive manner. As you can see, the wind
:28:38. > :28:44.here is storm like. That is the official word from the organisers.
:28:45. > :28:51.Windcheaters are not cheating anything. It is going nowhere at the
:28:52. > :28:55.moment, the programme is supposed to start in about 15 minutes, it was
:28:56. > :28:58.delayed 45 minutes and we have had no word on that it will be pushed
:28:59. > :29:03.back any further. There are no hurdles on the track which is
:29:04. > :29:07.interesting because it is the first event on the track have not put the
:29:08. > :29:14.hurdles out, so they must not feel it is safe enough? It does not feel
:29:15. > :29:18.safe. We are up here and we are having to hold onto our papers, I
:29:19. > :29:24.think it looks quite dangerous. It might be delayed further. The first
:29:25. > :29:34.time I have ever presented a sports show and the best thing I have got
:29:35. > :29:38.onset is a paperweight. Let's carry on chatting a of tonight, we have
:29:39. > :29:48.got Mo Farah coming up, one of the big draws in the men's 10,000
:29:49. > :29:52.metres, can he emulate what Jo Pavey did last night? It has not been
:29:53. > :29:55.ideal preparation building up to this, he had to pull out of the
:29:56. > :30:05.Commonwealth Games with illness and it has not been his best year so far
:30:06. > :30:09.but he is fit now and railing to go. This year, I have got to do
:30:10. > :30:19.something. If I am going to turn up, I have to be 100%. You are going to
:30:20. > :30:26.feel the aftermath of the Commonwealth Games buzz. Did you get
:30:27. > :30:31.any of that from the TV coverage? I didn't have much Internet or
:30:32. > :30:35.anything else. I wasn't there, it was kind of painful because I wanted
:30:36. > :30:42.to do it and I wasn't ready. There was no way. A tough debut. If he
:30:43. > :30:53.didn't already know the marathon was a hard event. He does now. You put a
:30:54. > :30:59.lot of effort into the London Marathon. A lot of training went
:31:00. > :31:09.into it. I gave it all. I came eighth, which is not great for me. I
:31:10. > :31:15.want to do well. I wanted to do the Commonwealth, and that didn't go.
:31:16. > :31:24.And then the Europeans, hopefully, I can come away with two wins. In
:31:25. > :31:29.2006, the disappointment of getting a silver after you thought you
:31:30. > :31:34.should have won gold. It is definitely not going to happen
:31:35. > :31:40.again. I had to wait four years for Barcelona. I know I am Olympic
:31:41. > :31:47.champion but the European is always in my heart. You can never forget
:31:48. > :31:53.where you started. It is important for the rest of the team to show
:31:54. > :31:58.them that I started here. If you can work hard, you can achieve more. To
:31:59. > :32:03.achieve what I have, it has been amazing. I want to continue my
:32:04. > :32:08.career and look back later in life and say I have made my country
:32:09. > :32:12.proud, the people proud and it is something that I have worked hard
:32:13. > :32:19.for. You have two have a bit of luck as well as working hard. Sometimes
:32:20. > :32:27.it doesn't quite happen. I wonder if it is inevitable is after two double
:32:28. > :32:32.gold winning seasons back-to-back, what that takes after your body,
:32:33. > :32:37.including all the other things that he does travelling backwards and
:32:38. > :32:39.forwards to America, was it inevitable that he had a season
:32:40. > :32:49.where things didn't go quite to plan? In all honesty, yes. You
:32:50. > :32:53.cannot expect your body to be at maximum health, maximum training
:32:54. > :33:00.with all of the stresses you are putting it through and not pick up N
:33:01. > :33:04.injury or two. It doesn't mean that his purple patch is over and his
:33:05. > :33:08.career is on the way down. It just means that he got ill and he missed
:33:09. > :33:15.some training and he is playing catch up a bit. He needs to not make
:33:16. > :33:19.it play on his mind any more. He had the disappointment of the marathon
:33:20. > :33:25.not going to plan and then having to deal with the illness scare. Now, he
:33:26. > :33:30.really needs to just get out on the track and win races. It is the
:33:31. > :33:38.perfect platform for him to night. You make a good point. He is just a
:33:39. > :33:43.man. Your body is clearly telling you something. People like Christine
:33:44. > :33:53.O Thorogood, she has taken easy year. -- Christine Ohuruogu. She is
:33:54. > :34:00.looking in cracking form and she has built herself before this season. We
:34:01. > :34:05.discussed the last night, I guess where it is relevant, it has come
:34:06. > :34:12.off two seasons where he is double gold medal winning, trained through
:34:13. > :34:17.the winter to do the marathon. It is not often that an athlete can keep
:34:18. > :34:25.churning out the gold medal winning performances season after season
:34:26. > :34:30.especially in the endurance events. It is that but also the other stuff
:34:31. > :34:38.as well, Paula has been through it, Denise as well. When you are a start
:34:39. > :34:42.the level that Mo Farah has become, people want a bit of your life. You
:34:43. > :34:46.have to choose what you are doing on the track and how you organise your
:34:47. > :34:54.life away from the championship events. I think Mo having introduced
:34:55. > :35:00.the marathon into that has at times lost his way a little bit in terms
:35:01. > :35:07.of what he really wants to do. That experiment with the marathon has
:35:08. > :35:15.allowed him to refocus for the next two or three years leading into Rio.
:35:16. > :35:20.This is a good base to start. This isn't the World Championships or the
:35:21. > :35:24.Olympic Games. It is the European Championships, where he started, he
:35:25. > :35:27.can come here and get the comfortable coat back on and get
:35:28. > :35:34.back to winning ways and hope it will give him a good platform to
:35:35. > :35:39.start winning again in 2016. You do think that the experiment with the
:35:40. > :35:44.marathon is going to be put to one side. He is running the great North
:35:45. > :35:50.run next month. Then it is a winter of knuckling down to get ready for
:35:51. > :35:57.the World Championships in Beijing next year. It is what he said. He
:35:58. > :36:02.was asked that question and he said he had not finished with the
:36:03. > :36:09.marathon 100%, I would like to revisit it after Rio. But for the
:36:10. > :36:13.next two years, the track, whether it is both events at both
:36:14. > :36:17.Championships, this is where he wants to focus his attention for the
:36:18. > :36:22.next two years. He can come back to the marathon if he wants in the
:36:23. > :36:26.future. He can run half marathons and other road races in the
:36:27. > :36:34.meantime, including the great North run, which is great. Stay safe,
:36:35. > :36:43.Steve. He is down there. The wind is getting up more here. Looking down
:36:44. > :36:49.there. The hurdles are not out but that is the mat for the pole vault
:36:50. > :36:55.which they have been waiting for all afternoon. They were due to get off
:36:56. > :37:01.at 1:15pm. I am not sure if that is a positive. Denise? It looks as
:37:02. > :37:08.though they are preparing for something. Just think how vulnerable
:37:09. > :37:14.the athletes are once they leave the ground. The slightest bit of wind
:37:15. > :37:19.taking them out of position, it is very dangerous. They obviously deem
:37:20. > :37:27.it is ready. Outside, it is getting up a little bit more and I notice
:37:28. > :37:31.some rain coming through. No snow just yet. All weather conditions out
:37:32. > :37:49.here in is your egg tonight. They are carrying on taking that often
:37:50. > :37:59.night which is good. -- here in is Zurich. One of the events that we
:38:00. > :38:06.are looking forward to tonight is the women's 100 hurdles. Tiffany
:38:07. > :38:16.Porter is taking part in this. She goes into this as the favourite and
:38:17. > :38:22.is really looking forward to it. I thrive off competition. One special
:38:23. > :38:29.thing with the hurdles is that everybody is so good. It really
:38:30. > :38:34.makes you step up your game as an athlete and makes you not slack off
:38:35. > :38:41.in practice. There are so many other hurdlers who are so good right now.
:38:42. > :38:50.I feed off that energy and it helps to propel me in the competition.
:38:51. > :38:56.Last year was very special for many reasons. It served as a little bit
:38:57. > :39:01.of a redemption from the disappointment of the Olympics in
:39:02. > :39:06.2012. Then the fact that everybody had been performing so well.
:39:07. > :39:12.Everybody counted me out at the World Championships. I probably
:39:13. > :39:17.didn't expect me to medal. The fact that I came away with my first
:39:18. > :39:20.global outdoor medal, it is very special. It gave me a bit of
:39:21. > :39:27.confidence knowing that I can run with the best of the world and
:39:28. > :39:32.compete with them. Tiffany Porter of Great Britain picking up her first
:39:33. > :39:36.medal. I couldn't really dwell too much on how I did in door because I
:39:37. > :39:46.knew Commonwealth was the next big thing. To be honest, even though I
:39:47. > :39:49.did get my silver medal and I was super thrilled, I didn't execute the
:39:50. > :39:54.best race I could have so I am looking to learn from that and put
:39:55. > :39:58.together a better race. I was very happy with my silver medal but I
:39:59. > :40:07.have work to do here at the European Championships. She has qualified
:40:08. > :40:14.quickest into the final tonight. She has shown a great progress. It feels
:40:15. > :40:22.like it is Tiffany's time. She has improved so much in the last couple
:40:23. > :40:28.of years. The only person standing in her way is Cindy Billaud of
:40:29. > :40:36.France. Another Great Britain-France jewel. Cindy has the faster time but
:40:37. > :40:41.she has not got a European title. She is not the woman with the medals
:40:42. > :40:47.around her neck so it is going to be an interesting dual to see who can
:40:48. > :40:58.handle the pressure. I think Tiffany is the favourite. -- Cindy is the
:40:59. > :41:21.favourite. We have got the semifinal and the final of the 100 metres
:41:22. > :41:25.tonight. Jimmy Vicaud is definitely out. He didn't look too bad
:41:26. > :41:31.yesterday. It is an injury that will keep him out for the rest of the
:41:32. > :41:37.season. I am so shocked and disappointed for him. Yesterday, he
:41:38. > :41:42.looked fantastic. He only seemed to work for about 40 metres and then
:41:43. > :41:48.cruised through a very low ten second run. Very disappointing. The
:41:49. > :41:52.wind has even got to the knees's hair. She might need a sponsor on
:41:53. > :42:05.the hairspray X donation we need to get some more official
:42:06. > :42:16.news. Can you explain the situation now? Jury the pole vault week
:42:17. > :42:20.observed a heavy weather report. The emergency committee considered that
:42:21. > :42:25.there was a danger for the athletes to continue the competition. We have
:42:26. > :42:31.decided to postpone it. Then the weather was so bad and the forecast
:42:32. > :42:35.was so I'm clear that we decided to postpone the competition by 30
:42:36. > :42:41.minutes. We should start imminently now and we hope to finish on time.
:42:42. > :42:46.We will try to squeeze everything in. The wind will not pick up but
:42:47. > :42:56.will go down. It will probably last for another hour or hour and a half
:42:57. > :43:08.at this level and then it will drop. The medal ceremonies have been to
:43:09. > :43:12.postponed. We hope that the hundred metres final will finish on time. It
:43:13. > :43:20.is a tremendous challenge for all the judges and referees. Right now,
:43:21. > :43:27.it feels quite still. We are at the best protected area in the stadium.
:43:28. > :43:32.Obviously, the higher up you are, especially the pole vault, the more
:43:33. > :43:38.wind gust you feel. We had a couple of panels blown away in the area
:43:39. > :43:43.behind the stadium so the wind speed was up to 80 or 90 kilometres per
:43:44. > :43:49.hour. That is a dangerous situation and we cannot put anybody at risk.
:43:50. > :43:58.Athlete safety is paramount so thank you for explaining it to others.
:43:59. > :44:03.There we go. We are already behind the revised schedule. Let me remind
:44:04. > :44:07.you of what it is. Imminently, we are supposed to be experiencing the
:44:08. > :44:18.men's 400 metres hurdles. There are no hurdles out. I suspect that is
:44:19. > :44:24.not going to happen for at least five or 26 we have the women's 100
:44:25. > :44:30.metres semifinals. There is a trio that we hope will all make it
:44:31. > :44:32.through to the finals. Then it is the women's 400 metres semifinals,
:44:33. > :44:55.Christine Ohuruogu looking good. Then it is the men's 100 metres
:44:56. > :45:00.semifinals. We have just heard that Jimmy Vicaud is out. Then it is the
:45:01. > :45:06.men's 10,000 metres final featuring Mo Farah and Andy Vernon. The men's
:45:07. > :45:14.discus final could be fun in this weather. Then at 7:55pm it is the
:45:15. > :45:37.men's 800 metres semifinals. I suspect those times might shift by
:45:38. > :45:44.a human at each but keep with us and we will keep you up-to-date. -- by a
:45:45. > :45:53.few minutes each. There are the hurdles. We are now past 6:30pm
:45:54. > :45:59.which is the time we were supposed to go off, it gives us more time to
:46:00. > :46:03.build up to some of tonight 's events, the men's 100 metres
:46:04. > :46:07.semifinals later on will feature James Dasaolu who has had a slow
:46:08. > :46:09.start to his season because he did not manage to appear at the
:46:10. > :46:18.Commonwealth Games because of injury, he has still managed to post
:46:19. > :46:24.two 10.03 runs. He will be hoping that the form will come through and
:46:25. > :46:26.he can produce at a major championship, he was disappointed at
:46:27. > :46:37.the World Championships last year but feels this could be his time.
:46:38. > :46:46.I have only raced to a three times seriously this season so I feel I am
:46:47. > :46:49.quite fresh. My plan was to always continue competing throughout the
:46:50. > :46:56.season. Whether I had been selected or not I was always going to
:46:57. > :47:00.continue, I am still developing, I still want to run a personal best
:47:01. > :47:05.this season. I am happy to be selected and it is unfortunate for
:47:06. > :47:11.Christian but she is a youngster who will have more Championships in him.
:47:12. > :47:20.In the sprints you have still got Dwain Chambers. Christophe Lemaitre
:47:21. > :47:25.who has gone 9.95. The names go on and on. In terms of the quality of
:47:26. > :47:30.the 100 and 200 metre running, to win it or get medals you have got to
:47:31. > :47:35.be running at your best and running world-class times. Being the
:47:36. > :47:39.European Championship, I think as sprinters, as British athletes, it
:47:40. > :47:42.is a chance for us to pick up a medal and use it as a stepping
:47:43. > :47:47.stone, because there are no Americans or Jamaicans or the rest
:47:48. > :47:49.of the world, it is a smaller competition but still a good
:47:50. > :47:59.competition. It is a stage for you to show what you can do.
:48:00. > :48:10.That is a good sign, those are the hurdles being put out for the men's
:48:11. > :48:14.400 metres, the heats. They were due to start about five minutes ago but
:48:15. > :48:20.we understand in about ten minutes time they should be going. This
:48:21. > :48:27.weather has not put off one erstwhile competitor, there he is,
:48:28. > :48:28.the official mask it doing the high wire -- the official mascot.
:48:29. > :48:46.LAUGHTER We are not sure if that is a heifer
:48:47. > :48:50.or a boule but whatever he started the evening as he might be the
:48:51. > :48:59.opposite. He is going back up, I think that is a heifer. Whatever you
:49:00. > :49:03.do don't try that at home. James Dasaolu, let's get back to the
:49:04. > :49:07.serious business, he has shown such huge promise and only one of
:49:08. > :49:11.performances has managed to produce the times, what he really wants to
:49:12. > :49:13.do is put back to the serious business, he has shown such huge
:49:14. > :49:29.promise and only one of performances has managed to produce the times,
:49:30. > :49:35.what he really wants to do is put he looked good in the heats. I think we
:49:36. > :49:47.are seeing a more mature James come through.
:49:48. > :49:54.With the Frenchman pulling out with his injury that has opened it up a
:49:55. > :50:00.little bit, he is the one he would have feared the most. Yes, he was
:50:01. > :50:05.the favourite coming in, and I think now it could be the conditions he is
:50:06. > :50:10.feeling the most. If you have got a weak hamstring the last thing you
:50:11. > :50:13.want is whether like this. Because of the timetable now being
:50:14. > :50:17.compressed they will try to catch it up and that means between the
:50:18. > :50:20.semifinal and final they will have less recovery time and I don't know
:50:21. > :50:27.if that is a good thing or a bad thing for him. Most sprinters
:50:28. > :50:32.prepare to get on with it. They cannot go back to the warm up track
:50:33. > :50:37.because it is a few miles away. They will put their head down and it will
:50:38. > :50:40.be fine, it is only 100 metres! LAUGHTER
:50:41. > :50:46.Key is in the right headspace but it is going to be a challenge, but
:50:47. > :50:50.athletes have to get used to this, competing in the rain, dealing with
:50:51. > :50:54.interruptions to your preparation, it will be a test of who has the
:50:55. > :50:59.mental toughness to get through it. We can tell you who has the
:51:00. > :51:02.experience, Dwain Chambers at his sixth European Championship. He
:51:03. > :51:07.knows time is running out and every major championship could be his
:51:08. > :51:18.last. This is what I am born to do. Every time you step on that line you
:51:19. > :51:21.are running for your life. I want to start with that fantastic
:51:22. > :51:24.performance at the trials, the isolated shot where we saw you
:51:25. > :51:28.running down the lane was one of the most incredible things I have seen,
:51:29. > :51:33.the determination, drive and passion, you are not going to lose
:51:34. > :51:37.that day. It is funny you mention that I have still not seen the race
:51:38. > :51:42.to this day. I have seen the side view but not the head-on view that
:51:43. > :51:47.you talk about. We had the youngsters coming up and I was not
:51:48. > :51:50.about to lose. It is a blessing and a curse having the youngsters
:51:51. > :51:54.around, they want to take your position that you are being pushed
:51:55. > :52:00.on to greater heights yourself. You cannot rest on your laurels. Not at
:52:01. > :52:07.all, what is the unique and fantastic aspect of it is that the
:52:08. > :52:11.sport is flourishing with talent, so many athletes that can run fast. The
:52:12. > :52:15.sport has been missing that for a while. I look down the line and
:52:16. > :52:20.think they will pass me one day but not right now. It keeps me
:52:21. > :52:25.motivated. I realise now I will not be able to do this forever. I
:52:26. > :52:29.learned to take everything with open arms and embrace it all the time. I
:52:30. > :52:34.did not have that attitude when I was younger, it was a lot more easy,
:52:35. > :52:43.more fun, less desire. Now I am closer to the end it matters more.
:52:44. > :52:47.When the crowd cheers that is it. That feeling you get, you cannot buy
:52:48. > :52:52.that. I want to hold onto that as long as possible because once that
:52:53. > :52:56.feeling has gone that is it. Britain has a great tradition in the sprints
:52:57. > :53:03.at this particular championship and it is where you sprang to prominence
:53:04. > :53:07.16 years ago now. It is a primary event for us as European and British
:53:08. > :53:11.printers. It is a title we carry with a great amount of pride. There
:53:12. > :53:17.has always been a rivalry between us and the French, and as much of the
:53:18. > :53:20.depth of talent we have got in Britain we have to go up against
:53:21. > :53:27.athletes like Martino, Christophe Lemaitre. I have already set my
:53:28. > :53:32.sights on what I want to do and if I am able to get a win and a sub ten
:53:33. > :53:38.second bonus that is Christmas birthday, lottery, everything in
:53:39. > :53:42.one. That is a good sign, they are athletes and they are coming out to
:53:43. > :53:47.run the 400 metre hurdles which are out on the track now. We are hoping
:53:48. > :53:51.that any moment now they will be stripped down and in the start
:53:52. > :53:56.blocks and we can show you some live athletics. The crowd have been
:53:57. > :54:01.sitting waiting patiently for these athletes to urge. There is Mo
:54:02. > :54:12.Farah, very briefly a shot of Mo Farah there. He might be speaking to
:54:13. > :54:16.you on twitter or text Paula. We will get down to the track in a
:54:17. > :54:21.moment to show you the 400 metre hurdles, but Dwain Chambers, we
:54:22. > :54:26.spoke about him yesterday, the Pirelli all competitor, able to keep
:54:27. > :54:34.at bay the young and really keen pups who are coming up behind him.
:54:35. > :54:38.The British Championships, Dwain Chambers showed why again and again
:54:39. > :54:44.he has managed to break through. Yes, he came alive again. He was
:54:45. > :54:48.very good in the championships, I don't think anyone predicted he
:54:49. > :54:53.would win it, but deep down he knows how to rise to the occasion, the big
:54:54. > :54:56.moments, and he will probably do the same tonight. He knows there is an
:54:57. > :55:03.opportunity that he could sneak into the final and if he is in the final
:55:04. > :55:07.anything can happen, he has been here before. I just think again, an
:55:08. > :55:11.athlete a bit like Andy Turner who knows the end is nigh, coming to the
:55:12. > :55:16.end of his career who would love to go out on a high. The athletes are
:55:17. > :55:23.warming up at the moment on the track, said Rogers for Great Britain
:55:24. > :55:27.going in the first of these semifinal heats -- Sebastian Rodger
:55:28. > :55:39.'s. We will see live athletics this season. It has dropped down to I am
:55:40. > :55:41.guessing 13, 14 degrees. It is feeling like a winter European
:55:42. > :55:51.athletics championship at the moment, not height of summer.
:55:52. > :56:01.Roger's hoping he will make it through the semifinal. I am suitably
:56:02. > :56:04.dressed and you are correct, it was much warmer at the world indoor
:56:05. > :56:09.championships than we have it there right now. These conditions will be
:56:10. > :56:14.difficult for the 400-metre hurdler is, very blustery, talking about
:56:15. > :56:17.getting accurate stride pattern earns this could be dangerous
:56:18. > :56:24.territory especially if you are quite inexperienced. Stay warm, you
:56:25. > :56:30.would get, we will catch up with you later. Thank you. The first 400
:56:31. > :56:32.metre hurdle semifinal about to go off shortly so let's hand you to
:56:33. > :56:50.Andrew Cotter. Sebastian Rodger, the European under
:56:51. > :56:57.23 championships last year that he showed great promise, ran very
:56:58. > :57:03.well. Almost all of the athletes who competed in the final there are
:57:04. > :57:13.involved in the semifinals here. A great crop of young hurdlers.
:57:14. > :57:22.Look out for Patryk Dobek of Poland. Janis Baltuss, the Latvian
:57:23. > :57:28.champion for the last couple of years. Stanislas Wawrinka on the
:57:29. > :57:32.court of bronze-medallist at the last two European Championships but
:57:33. > :57:45.I don't think he is in the form to threaten -- Stanislas Wawrinka
:57:46. > :57:56.McCall -- Stanislav Melnykov. The tall figure of Varg Konigsmark, the
:57:57. > :58:03.former European champion. The flying mullets, the quickest of the
:58:04. > :58:23.qualifiers, Denis Kudryavtsev. The youngest in the line-up is Patryk
:58:24. > :58:27.Dobek. Michal Broz. Leonardo Capotosti, the Italian champion, a
:58:28. > :58:33.man who has never run below 50 seconds so this might be a bit of a
:58:34. > :58:41.stretch. Very pleasant now in terms of sunshine, there is still the
:58:42. > :58:49.strong breeze. We are ready for some athletics and we are grateful for
:58:50. > :58:52.that. The first of three semifinals. The first two go through
:58:53. > :59:12.automatically plus the two fastest losers over the three.
:59:13. > :59:22.Away they go, perhaps the main rival for Sebastian Rodger go in the lanes
:59:23. > :59:31.immediately outside temp, barring conics mark, and Patryk Dobek. --
:59:32. > :59:38.Varg Konigsmark. Patryk Dobek making up ground, passing the shell brawls.
:59:39. > :59:47.Running very strongly. -- Michal Broz. Sebastian Rodger losing a
:59:48. > :59:54.little bit of ground at the moment. Varg Konigsmark, the lanky German.
:59:55. > :59:58.These three clear at the moment but Sebastian Rodger still in touch,
:59:59. > :00:05.working for one of the automatic qualifying places. It is so close.
:00:06. > :00:21.It might have just been Denis Kudryavtsev. Sebastian Rodger run
:00:22. > :00:28.well but although the two fastest losers go through it might be the
:00:29. > :00:34.end of his run. It becomes very competitive around this stage
:00:35. > :00:40.whether guys can see what the others are doing. You are quite anxious or
:00:41. > :00:49.nervous to see whether you push into the final barrier. These three, they
:00:50. > :00:57.did it well. Now that real mad dash for the tape. I will be interested
:00:58. > :01:14.to see what the result is. Could Raea -- could Raea seven -- could
:01:15. > :01:55.this is the result. A personal best for Varg Konigsmark. The decathlon
:01:56. > :02:00.pole vaulters are warming up. A very unusual situation. This event was
:02:01. > :02:05.supposed to be concluded in the morning session. Six athletes were
:02:06. > :02:11.unable to come pleat their events. They are lining up with a huge
:02:12. > :02:27.crosswind. Carrying a 5.5 metre fibre class Paul, it is going to be
:02:28. > :02:34.difficult. The competition leader knocked off the bar. You have to
:02:35. > :02:37.feel sorry for him. He won't have accumulated the points he would
:02:38. > :02:53.expect in the eighth event of the ten. It will have an impact on the
:02:54. > :03:00.eventual result. The six athletes who have yet to compete in this
:03:01. > :03:10.event will have a chance to catch up with Kai Kazmirek. You can see the
:03:11. > :03:17.trouble that the wind is causing in the field events. We will go on with
:03:18. > :03:45.the second of the 400 metres hurdles semifinals. Former champion Montsho
:03:46. > :03:50.has tested positive in Herbie Sample after the Commonwealth Games. What
:03:51. > :04:05.kind of ban would you expect after that? I would guess it would be in
:04:06. > :04:15.the six to 12 months region. It is a stimulant, or a masking agent. They
:04:16. > :04:22.could go heavier. Montsho who has been the antagonise of Christine
:04:23. > :04:26.Ohuruogu, so many head to heads, not least last year at the world
:04:27. > :04:33.champions where Christine Ohuruogu came up with that tremendous finish.
:04:34. > :04:42.It could be the end of that rival because Montsho is a bit older. It
:04:43. > :04:49.could be the end of that rivalry. Disappointing for her. If it is a
:04:50. > :04:52.mistake, something that she has overlooked, even though an athlete
:04:53. > :04:57.has to take responsibility for everything that they put in their
:04:58. > :05:05.mouths, drinks, stimulants, whatever. It is very difficult. She
:05:06. > :05:14.is targeting Rio. She has not been brilliant this season. She will have
:05:15. > :05:25.a positive test, however long that ban is that is meted out to her.
:05:26. > :05:35.Burton is looking to go through, as is Thomas Barr of Northern Ireland.
:05:36. > :05:47.Steve Cram is at the track now. That man who you have seen introduced
:05:48. > :05:52.just their Kariem Hussein is one of the big hopes of these championships
:05:53. > :05:56.for Switzerland. Thomas Barr, a mechanical engineering student, he
:05:57. > :06:09.had his final exams this year, he has a student world record. A
:06:10. > :06:16.fantastic season for him. Emir Bekric is starting to rediscover his
:06:17. > :06:22.form. Tom Burton goes on the outside. Training partner of Nile
:06:23. > :06:29.Flannery who you will see in the next semifinal. The top two and the
:06:30. > :06:37.two fastest losers to go through. Tom Burton will have two run a
:06:38. > :06:42.lifetime's best. To go through. Down on the track, I don't think it is as
:06:43. > :06:52.windy as it is up in the studio and on the concourse. Barr and Tom
:06:53. > :07:09.Burton. Barr said he would have to go low 49 is if he is to progress.
:07:10. > :07:18.But I think he could do it. Kariem Hussein did not go off all that well
:07:19. > :07:23.in Lane 3. The Swiss crowd will be cheering him on. The toll Serbian in
:07:24. > :07:34.red in Lane 6. Thomas Barr has a bit of work to do down the back
:07:35. > :07:39.straight. -- tall Serbian. A little check back from Thomas Barr of
:07:40. > :07:46.Ireland. He lost a lot of ground. Tom Burton is struggling as well.
:07:47. > :07:59.This is where Hussein is very good. The top to only go through. Tom
:08:00. > :08:05.Parsons must his way across the finish line. He was out of it. Not
:08:06. > :08:18.the sort of race he would have wanted to run. -- Tom Barr. Just
:08:19. > :08:27.watching the top end, he lost quite a bit of ground and then came
:08:28. > :08:32.through like a train. I was watching Hussein from Switzerland and how he
:08:33. > :08:38.judged his race. He was very cagey early on. I think he was saving
:08:39. > :08:44.himself for this final three flights. As soon as he came into the
:08:45. > :08:50.home straight, the Swiss man put his foot down and put pressure on every
:08:51. > :08:57.single body outside of him. He judged it well. Allowing him to run
:08:58. > :09:02.off it well. Diving for the line. Thomas Barr had to dive for the
:09:03. > :09:10.line. I am not sure if it is going to be quick enough. Just quick
:09:11. > :09:17.enough. But unfortunately the one he pushes out is Sebastian Rodger. Both
:09:18. > :09:34.of the British athletes are out. Nile Flannery yet to come in the
:09:35. > :09:42.third semifinal. Beck -- Bekric is back and looking dangerous. A little
:09:43. > :09:47.fist bump from Thomas Barr who knows he is still in it at the moment.
:09:48. > :09:53.Only two places available for the fastest losers. He is the second of
:09:54. > :10:04.the two. Good performances from Hussein and beck rich -- Bekric are
:10:05. > :10:09.one and two. The latest on the weather, the locals have said that
:10:10. > :10:15.it should pass over in the next hour or so. We have an hour of high winds
:10:16. > :10:22.and storm like conditions. The revised schedule is 16 minutes
:10:23. > :10:28.behind which leads to a lot of uncertainty for these athletes,
:10:29. > :10:33.especially as the warm up track is 15 minutes behind. So you have a
:10:34. > :10:39.long period where you are not warm. You have to be very focused. It is
:10:40. > :10:46.not unusual for delays to occur. Find a spot inside, another warm up
:10:47. > :10:52.track. Somewhere quiet. Just lie down, listen to some music if you
:10:53. > :10:57.can and get your mind in the right place. Or use your phone, depending
:10:58. > :11:04.on what you are used for. You cannot get hacked up and angry, you have to
:11:05. > :11:11.stay cool and relaxed. I am trying. You saw Mo Farah on the phone. He is
:11:12. > :11:16.due to go off in the 10,000 metres at eight minutes past eight. That is
:11:17. > :11:28.looking more like 8:30pm. We will keep you posted. With the power's
:11:29. > :11:33.difference it is 730 PM back home. Back to the 400 metres hurdles.
:11:34. > :11:49.Andrew Cotter will describe this one for you. COMMENTATOR: Nile Flannery
:11:50. > :11:55.is the last Britain remaining. Just to going through to the final so it
:11:56. > :11:59.is by no means guaranteed. Thomas Barr will be watching with great
:12:00. > :12:04.interest and he is talking to us just now. A tremendous effort, you
:12:05. > :12:12.gave it your all and you are in a fastest loser section. It didn't go
:12:13. > :12:18.very smoothly. It was a bit of a messy one. We will have to see how
:12:19. > :12:22.this semi goes. It is not going to give me an optimum lane, even if I
:12:23. > :12:31.get through to the final but I will take it if I can get it. How much
:12:32. > :12:41.did the delay affect you? Yesterday, my hip was quite sore. It is an
:12:42. > :12:48.injury I have. I woke up with it, the track surface, because it is so
:12:49. > :12:54.hard, it brought it back. I have had several physio sessions. I need to
:12:55. > :12:59.keep it warmed up, so it wasn't ideal. But everybody is in the same
:13:00. > :13:07.boat at the end of the day. We all had a 45 minute delay. How was the
:13:08. > :13:13.injury? I didn't feel it too much. I hit the dirt at the end of the day
:13:14. > :13:23.but I am not too bad. We wish you well. Thank you very much. Just
:13:24. > :13:30.waiting for this hideous storm to pass through. It is a beautiful
:13:31. > :13:38.evening at the moment. So, anyway. We are ready for the last of the
:13:39. > :13:46.semifinals in the men's 400 metres hurdles. Nile Flannery goes in this
:13:47. > :13:59.one. Jussi Kanervo does not start for Finland in Lane 1. That is
:14:00. > :14:04.Flannery. He has had a little bit of a blip in form. In the Diamond
:14:05. > :14:09.league he was very critical of his own performance. He was inconsistent
:14:10. > :14:15.in the Commonwealth Games. Finishing just outside the medals. Just to get
:14:16. > :14:27.into the final, to give himself a chance of a medal, that is what he
:14:28. > :14:40.wants. Rasmus Magi is a big threat. Oskari Moro and the Timofey Chalyy
:14:41. > :14:45.in Lane 7 and eight. Flannery is being run down by Felix Franz at the
:14:46. > :14:51.moment. He likes to come through strongly in the latter stages. Felix
:14:52. > :14:56.Franz is passed him at the moment. Rasmus Magi is running strong at the
:14:57. > :15:05.moment. Flannery is a long way back at the moment. Felix Franz striding
:15:06. > :15:10.out well. Rasmus Magi looking strong. Flannery is leaving himself
:15:11. > :15:16.a lot of work to do. He is going to have to come from the other end of
:15:17. > :15:23.the earth. It is too far and too late. It is a good run from Rasmus
:15:24. > :15:31.Magi and a good runner from Timofey Chalyy. But where was Nile Flannery?
:15:32. > :15:40.Sometimes he has been inconsistent. That was one of his bad runs. He is
:15:41. > :15:49.out. I don't know if the applause is sarcastic or not, but it wasn't good
:15:50. > :15:52.from Nile Flannery. Look at the winning time, Rasmus Magi was
:15:53. > :15:58.absolutely cruising coming down the home straight, very quick
:15:59. > :16:03.performance so you can see why Niall Flannery was slightly off the pace,
:16:04. > :16:05.that he has been up and down, an inconsistent season three can
:16:06. > :16:13.imagine how frustrated he has got to be right now. This race will be very
:16:14. > :16:19.competitive. Rasmus Magi is looking really strong. Niall Flannery was
:16:20. > :16:25.struggling from the start. Yes he did not get into the groove from the
:16:26. > :16:29.gun really. It'll be interesting to hear he says about it can sometimes
:16:30. > :16:33.he says he does not know why it doesn't all come together. If you
:16:34. > :16:37.can remember the common wealth games, he struggled in the early
:16:38. > :16:41.rounds and produced a good performance in the final. At this
:16:42. > :16:49.level you have to be consistent. Get into the finals because that is the
:16:50. > :16:50.only time you can get the medals. Disappointing for Niall Flannery,
:16:51. > :17:08.disappointing for the British athletes. Both of the fastest losers
:17:09. > :17:15.coming from this sheet. -- this heat. Talk about it being difficult
:17:16. > :17:24.for the athletes, what about this for the Paul Walters? --
:17:25. > :17:30.that was his first attempt this afternoon after a long wait. He is
:17:31. > :17:37.really struggling with a very strong winds, it has dropped somewhat. The
:17:38. > :17:45.sky has cleared as you can see. To come back with very little warm up,
:17:46. > :17:53.he is now on two failures. Has a clearance of 4.70. One more attempt
:17:54. > :17:58.remains. There are the qualifiers who go through to the final which
:17:59. > :18:06.takes place later on this evening, let's say that. No British athletes
:18:07. > :18:15.in there but it you'd still be a great final. Look out for that one
:18:16. > :18:23.when it comes. STUDIO: There is Mo Farah, his time has been pushed back
:18:24. > :18:27.somewhat, we are expecting sometime around 7:30pm, quite a few events to
:18:28. > :18:34.get underway on the tracks. Hundred metres semifinals for the men and
:18:35. > :18:40.women. Mo Farah looks very relaxed, like he is keen to go, but he knows
:18:41. > :18:46.it is an achievable race. Nobody there that should scare him. Not
:18:47. > :18:52.really, he is warming up with a couple of the closest people to
:18:53. > :18:56.him, on time in the race, the Belgian and the Frenchman and they
:18:57. > :19:04.are still 45 seconds behind him on personal best. He should come in and
:19:05. > :19:07.be able to run this race as he pleases and in control. I suspect
:19:08. > :19:12.even more so now with the weather, but what we are likely to see is a
:19:13. > :19:16.slow race with a burn up over the last lap. I don't think we will see
:19:17. > :19:24.anyone making any brave beds for glory. Thank you, that coming up in
:19:25. > :19:28.50, 60 minutes. Everything has slept on the schedule because of the
:19:29. > :19:32.weather. Next on track is the women's 100 metres semifinals. The
:19:33. > :19:36.Briton with three chances of success. -- Great Britain with three
:19:37. > :20:01.chances. The first of those semifinals
:20:02. > :20:06.features Ashleigh Nelson, she ran a new personal best yesterday in the
:20:07. > :20:11.heats, that is what you want to run an athlete isn't it as they are in
:20:12. > :20:14.these championships? Absolutely, I am delighted for Ashley, she has got
:20:15. > :20:21.herself into tremendous shape this season. Personal best in the
:20:22. > :20:28.qualifying rounds, she will know that she is in with a chance, she
:20:29. > :20:30.really is. It is good running, a good standard at these
:20:31. > :20:34.championships, so I am looking forward to seeing how she handles
:20:35. > :20:40.this qualification with only the first two qualifying and the two
:20:41. > :20:49.fastest, she has to be on point. She has Myriam Soumare just on her
:20:50. > :20:52.outside. Yes and she looked good. In the qualifying rounds you see people
:20:53. > :20:57.running hard until about 80 metres and then switch off but she did not,
:20:58. > :21:04.she ran from gun to tape, putting down a marker. She looks good. Let's
:21:05. > :21:10.get out to commentary, Andrew Cotter, I bet they are raring to go.
:21:11. > :21:21.They certainly are. We caught a glimpse of Amy Foster there. Jamile
:21:22. > :21:27.Samuel struggled in the first round for such a big talent. And new
:21:28. > :21:36.personal best in the first round. Ashleigh Nelson, took off one tenth
:21:37. > :21:47.the second on her personal best in the first round. Very quickly. Was
:21:48. > :21:52.Myriam Soumare R. She said she was in great shape and she came here to
:21:53. > :21:57.run beautiful times. She did not leave anything out there at all.
:21:58. > :22:01.Ezinne Okparaebo, a little bit off her personal best a couple of years
:22:02. > :22:17.ago. Rebekka Haase of Germany goes in Lane 7. And on the outside lane
:22:18. > :22:27.Andreea Ograzeanu of Romania. The first of three semifinals, there is
:22:28. > :22:32.Amy Foster. The Irish record-holder. As we saw with the hurdlers, it
:22:33. > :22:36.depends with where the wind is on the home straight, but the
:22:37. > :22:43.conditions are not too bad at all for some decent times. We have Amy
:22:44. > :22:51.Foster in Lane 1. Jamile Samuel in Lane 2, Hanna-Maari Latvala in Lane
:22:52. > :22:59.3, Ashleigh Nelson in Lane 4, Myriam Soumare in lane five, Ezinne
:23:00. > :23:05.Okparaebo in Lane 6, Rebekka Haase in Lane 7 and Andreea Ograzeanu in
:23:06. > :23:13.Lane 8. Ashleigh Nelson away nicely but look at Myriam Soumare go.
:23:14. > :23:18.Ashleigh Nelson making a move, she is coming through, challenging
:23:19. > :23:27.Myriam Soumare. 11.18 into a strong wind, good run by Myriam Soumare R.
:23:28. > :23:31.That'll have been close to her new personal best, Ashleigh Nelson, she
:23:32. > :23:35.is safely through to the final. Did you see her smile when she came
:23:36. > :23:39.across the line, she knows she has done a good job, but it's good
:23:40. > :23:44.European athletes behind her. Good start by Ashleigh Nelson, trying to
:23:45. > :23:49.get into her beautiful running as quickly as she can. She knows the
:23:50. > :23:54.Norwegian always blisters out of the blocks. Look how close she was too
:23:55. > :24:04.one of the favourites, Myriam Soumare. This is a really good,
:24:05. > :24:10.strong performance by Ashleigh Nelson and buy one of the
:24:11. > :24:14.favourites, Myriam Soumare. Out of the blocks, let's have a look at
:24:15. > :24:19.both of these athletes. Out of the blocks, working hard for the first
:24:20. > :24:24.ten, 15 metres. Use all the energy they can to get their bodies to an
:24:25. > :24:27.upright position so they can use the core strength to keep them upright
:24:28. > :24:31.so they can move their limbs as quickly as they possibly can. Both
:24:32. > :24:37.of these ladies execute that very well in this race. The key is not to
:24:38. > :24:46.fade, try to maintain speed as long as you can. Both of these ladies
:24:47. > :24:52.through to the final. Yes, good running by Ashleigh Nelson. Would
:24:53. > :25:08.have beaten her old personal best, and into that when it is a very good
:25:09. > :25:12.run. -- into that wind. STUDIO: Good running from Ashleigh Nelson,
:25:13. > :25:19.hopefully the first of three Brits we will see in the finals. Yes, she
:25:20. > :25:24.did not have the best of starts, she ran brilliantly. I am delighted. She
:25:25. > :25:33.was slightly down on the two main girls on her outside, Myriam Soumare
:25:34. > :25:37.and Ezinne Okparaebo, but she kept focused, kept her technique tidy and
:25:38. > :25:44.got the all valuable second spot which is brilliant running from a
:25:45. > :25:51.girl so young. It was really key that she focused on her lane, Myriam
:25:52. > :25:54.Soumare has been the class act in these championships so far so she
:25:55. > :26:04.knew if she could hang onto her tale she would be fine. Lovely head-on
:26:05. > :26:10.shot. She has got herself into such fantastic shape this year. Lost some
:26:11. > :26:15.weight, strong, quick, and as you can see from her technique she is
:26:16. > :26:21.relaxed. Not too worried by the girls on her outside, focusing only
:26:22. > :26:24.on her lane as she ought to. This is great qualification and now she has
:26:25. > :26:31.got to get her head back down and prepare for the finals. Which will
:26:32. > :26:37.happen in about an hour and a half, the schedule has slept because of
:26:38. > :26:43.the weather. Next up for Great Britain we have Desiree Henry,
:26:44. > :26:52.another big personal best in her seat. She has Dafne Schippers who is
:26:53. > :26:56.the favourite. Ran a fantastic meet in Glasgow at the Diamond league.
:26:57. > :27:04.The heptathlete who comes and storms are world-class field. She is
:27:05. > :27:08.looking incredibly good. She is looking great, I think she is the
:27:09. > :27:11.favourite, she is looking to do the double but she has got to get
:27:12. > :27:15.through this. There's three Henry, first time on the senior circuit,
:27:16. > :27:18.she has to hold her nerve and not panic because Dafne Schippers will
:27:19. > :27:37.be coming through hard. COMMENTATOR: Yes, these two were
:27:38. > :27:44.very good in qualification. We now can educate in Lane 1.
:27:45. > :27:52.What about people Tour of Germany, the German champion in fine form.
:27:53. > :28:01.Henry, former world youth champion at 200 metres. Full of smiles. Dafne
:28:02. > :28:08.Schippers I am sure she is looking forward to it. She topped the
:28:09. > :28:14.rankings with Myriam Soumare coming into this. Celine Distel-Bonnet also
:28:15. > :28:17.having a good season, what's a good season, what's good things happen in
:28:18. > :28:26.European sprinting for women at the minute. Italia Pogrebnyack of the
:28:27. > :28:36.Ukraine in Lane 7. -- Nataliya Pohrebnyak.
:28:37. > :28:42.Conditions, you have been talking about it all evening, it has not
:28:43. > :28:48.been that bad down on the track, down around about 1.9, into their
:28:49. > :28:57.faces. That will slow the times, but it was fairly swift, 11.17 into that
:28:58. > :29:10.wind for Myriam Soumare. At this kid has just appeared behind Desiree
:29:11. > :29:17.Henry. -- at discus. First two and the two fastest losers going
:29:18. > :29:24.through. Henry gets a pretty good start, Dafne Schippers coming
:29:25. > :29:31.through, very tight for second that Henry might just get there and she
:29:32. > :29:35.does. The wind there saying it was with her, it is swirling around, I
:29:36. > :29:41.just thought the starter might have called them back because you can see
:29:42. > :29:46.the lane markers being blown around. Good concentration from these women,
:29:47. > :29:52.she is only 18, not sure she will have had all these delays to deal
:29:53. > :29:58.with in the past. Let's see if we can confirm her second place. I
:29:59. > :30:01.think it was a clear second place. Conditions really difficult for
:30:02. > :30:05.them, you can imagine when you are lining up that it is a head winds
:30:06. > :30:09.and then suddenly it is behind you and it changes the way you think
:30:10. > :30:13.about the race and how you approach it. Very good performance by the
:30:14. > :30:19.young lady. I think she will be pleased with that, one of the
:30:20. > :30:22.favourites next to her, your youthful, enjoying the environment
:30:23. > :30:33.and all of a sudden you throw yourself into a major final. Raleigh
:30:34. > :30:37.and performance from her. Dafne Schippers herself has never been in
:30:38. > :30:46.this position in a major championship. Just watched her
:30:47. > :30:51.crossing the line, she has run 11.21 again, there is no dip there. I know
:30:52. > :31:00.you were a great exponent of it, Colin. Shippers comes over and says,
:31:01. > :31:09.well done, young lady, you are through. So, two out of three into
:31:10. > :31:13.the final for Great Britain. Dafne Schippers is heading the qualifiers
:31:14. > :31:28.so far. That wind just turned around enough for her. Distel-Bonnet is in
:31:29. > :31:33.a good position, as well. Third and final attempt for Rico Freimuth to
:31:34. > :31:40.go clear at four metres and 90 centimetres. One of those failures
:31:41. > :31:48.carried over from this afternoon. Big delays. Can he go clear? That is
:31:49. > :31:54.better. Look at that. What a great clearance after what has been a bit
:31:55. > :32:04.of a mess. The athletes have been very patient. Rico Freimuth with a
:32:05. > :32:12.personal best. Congratulations on reaching the final. I cannot believe
:32:13. > :32:18.it. I ran another lifetime best. I am extremely happy with that. I just
:32:19. > :32:24.relaxed and enjoyed myself. I cannot believe I am in the final and I am
:32:25. > :32:28.very happy with that. You have the favourite alongside you, Dafne
:32:29. > :32:34.Schippers. We are pretty much training partners, so I was quite
:32:35. > :32:40.excited. It is quite exciting and we are enjoying ourselves.
:32:41. > :32:49.Congratulations. Yet ready for the final. All the best in that. Thank
:32:50. > :32:56.you! Two consecutive parallel pools in this pole vault competition. A
:32:57. > :33:02.much more considerable height of five metres and 20. It will gain him
:33:03. > :33:12.much more points if he clears it and he does. The Russian goes clear at
:33:13. > :33:18.5.20. He has a lifetime best of 5.40. Trying to do the maths on this
:33:19. > :33:23.is going to be tight. There are going to be five or six athletes in
:33:24. > :33:33.contention for the medals. But he has just put himself right in the
:33:34. > :33:37.mix. Talking about how British sprinting is improving. Never before
:33:38. > :33:47.has there been three footage women in a final. Ashleigh Nelson is
:33:48. > :33:52.through, it is eerie -- Desiree Henry is through, Asha Philip now
:33:53. > :34:05.trying to go through. This is one of the favourites, if that Lalova.
:34:06. > :34:19.There is Asha Phillip. That is Audrey Alloh of Italy. Next to her
:34:20. > :34:32.the French athlete IO Delhi EQ son. -- EQ son. -- Ikuesan. Kambundji of
:34:33. > :34:49.Switzerland can also run close to 11.30. If Asha Phillip does not get
:34:50. > :35:06.close to Sailer or Lalova, look for the time. 11.30 is the fastest at
:35:07. > :35:15.the moment. Asha Phillip is out fairly well. Sailer going well.
:35:16. > :35:22.Alongside Kambundji of Switzerland. Ikuesan also going well. Lalova got
:35:23. > :35:33.the win. Looking at the time 11.15, a flat wind. A close race to pick
:35:34. > :35:41.over. We are all looking at that. A scratch of the head. Looking what
:35:42. > :35:50.the positions will be. Listen to the raw because Kambundji has been given
:35:51. > :35:55.second place, the Swiss athlete. Lalova is a great 200 metre runner
:35:56. > :36:01.and she holds herself through to take the victory. She set a new
:36:02. > :36:09.national record in the semifinal. A very strong performance. This is
:36:10. > :36:15.going to be very close. It is going to come down to the time for Asha
:36:16. > :36:22.Phillip. So close to getting one of the fastest loser times. Lalova
:36:23. > :36:29.pulls herself through. She is the quality athlete in this field. We
:36:30. > :36:37.knew it was going to be very tight. Sailer explodes out of the blocks. A
:36:38. > :36:42.very good 60 metre athlete. Lalova is very small but you expect her to
:36:43. > :36:48.get off to a good start and she is a very consistent runner, smooth,
:36:49. > :36:55.silky. Asha Phillip had to work all the way through. Pressure on her
:36:56. > :37:05.right and her left. I think she is over striding. She tries to gather
:37:06. > :37:11.herself. This is going to be tight. Some very interesting looks at the
:37:12. > :37:17.time. Asha Phillip looks like she might be through but it is
:37:18. > :37:26.borderline at the moment. And it is changing. Let's talk to her. A
:37:27. > :37:32.little bit of confusion. 11.24 would be enough to get you through. How do
:37:33. > :37:38.you assess the race? It was a terrible race. The end was a bit
:37:39. > :37:43.sticky but if I have qualified, it is all I need, to be in the final.
:37:44. > :37:48.So many great athletes in the final, if you are through there will be
:37:49. > :37:54.three British athletes. That would be wonderful. To have is all in the
:37:55. > :38:03.final, it would be amazing. We appreciate you talking to us. You
:38:04. > :38:20.are welcome. Thank you. It still hasn't been confirmed. It is coming
:38:21. > :38:27.down to Distel-Bonnet and it hasn't been confirmed whether Asha Phillip
:38:28. > :38:32.is through yet. This decathlon has turned into a bit of a dog 's
:38:33. > :38:35.dinner. The event leader has moved on to the ninth discipline, the
:38:36. > :38:44.javelin. The pole vaulters are still at the other end. The German in the
:38:45. > :38:50.lead, well, that is debatable depending on what the guys at the
:38:51. > :38:57.other end of the stadium are doing. The frustration might have gone into
:38:58. > :39:00.the javelin. A bit of extra power after being eliminated from the pole
:39:01. > :39:08.vault competition earlier than he wanted. He has a lifetime best of
:39:09. > :39:20.62.25 and it looks like he might have extended that. That is
:39:21. > :39:23.significant. 63.12. Great stuff. We still do not know whether Asha
:39:24. > :39:28.Phillip has made it through to the final. They are just going through
:39:29. > :39:37.the tapes, working out the three girls, on the exact same time, which
:39:38. > :39:47.has the 1000th of an advantage. Asha Phillip who trains with Dafne
:39:48. > :39:52.Schippers. She tells her to chase her down but she is the girl in
:39:53. > :39:57.command at the moment. A great run from her. She is consistently
:39:58. > :40:02.bringing her personal best down. Just back from the world Junior
:40:03. > :40:06.Championships. Before those championships, we weren't sure that
:40:07. > :40:14.she was in this sort of shape. We heard that she occasionally trains
:40:15. > :40:23.with Dafne Schippers, in America, in April, so she is very aware of what
:40:24. > :40:28.she can do. Just look at her. As I said, the arms need tidying up a
:40:29. > :40:35.little bit but a sensational time from somebody so young. She could go
:40:36. > :40:59.quicker in the final. Her physique is reminiscent of the great Merlene
:41:00. > :41:04.Ottey. We can now see Christine Ohuruogu down on the track. It is an
:41:05. > :41:10.off-season for her but she is running herself into shape, as she
:41:11. > :41:19.always does, producing a PB in the semifinals. Andrew Cotter is your
:41:20. > :41:28.commentator for this semifinal. We did think she was saving herself for
:41:29. > :41:33.the World Championships next year but she could be in the running for
:41:34. > :41:46.a gold medal after that personal best, a seasoned's best, 51.40.
:41:47. > :42:05.Esther Cremer, four times the German champion. In the Lane 8, we have got
:42:06. > :42:25.the Russian. Gay of France in one, Bazzoni of Italy.
:42:26. > :42:36.It seems that Zadorina is out. She has not come to the start. We
:42:37. > :42:43.expected a steady start. Christine Ohuruogu ran a pretty even race in
:42:44. > :42:53.qualifying. Esther Cremer is already. The Ukrainian has gone off
:42:54. > :43:05.very quickly in Lane 3. Christine Ohuruogu beginning to wind it up.
:43:06. > :43:09.Esther Cremer is on the outside of Christine Ohuruogu and she is
:43:10. > :43:13.beginning to make ground on her. Just three to go through
:43:14. > :43:20.automatically. Christine Ohuruogu will need to put in her famous cake.
:43:21. > :43:28.She is going to come through in second place. A good win for
:43:29. > :43:31.Terrero. Christine not as impressive in the second round as she was in
:43:32. > :43:40.the first round. The main thing is that she does go through to the
:43:41. > :43:46.final. A shake of the head. I think she knew that was not very good by
:43:47. > :43:51.her standards. I was a bit worried. There was nothing happening for a
:43:52. > :43:57.while. It was more that the others faded, not that anything happened
:43:58. > :44:05.for her. Esther Cremer is a 200 metre runner formally and hasn't
:44:06. > :44:13.quite got the 400 yet. This is where Christine Ohuruogu realised she had
:44:14. > :44:19.work to do. It is not that she is accelerating. She just keeps
:44:20. > :44:26.maintaining. Even she was a bit concerned, leaning a little bit.
:44:27. > :44:29.With Zadorina not lining up for the race, obviously another person who
:44:30. > :44:34.could have been a factor coming in for this. Terrero running well and
:44:35. > :44:40.Christine doing enough to qualify but I think the shake of the head
:44:41. > :44:44.tells you everything. From the beginning, I thought she had got out
:44:45. > :44:50.OK. She was probably thinking that she would let Esther Cremer go. Then
:44:51. > :44:58.on the back straight she would be OK. I do not know if the long delay
:44:59. > :45:04.has affected her. It hasn't been a normal season for her. Didn't quite
:45:05. > :45:09.get into it. We saw her earlier on helping to clear the track. Maybe
:45:10. > :45:25.she exerted a bit of energy doing that. At least she is through and no
:45:26. > :45:28.panic as far as that is concerned. She will perhaps reflect on her
:45:29. > :45:38.first-round time and carry that board rather than dwelling on that
:45:39. > :45:44.one there. Assess the race? I was tired, I do not have my race
:45:45. > :45:47.fitness, after having ran really well yesterday, running really
:45:48. > :45:54.poorly today. I am a bit surprised but I will just have to take it.
:45:55. > :46:02.What about the long period waiting around, did that affect you at all?
:46:03. > :46:07.I don't know. The conditions meaning delay in the schedule, I wonder that
:46:08. > :46:14.affected you? You try not to think about it, it is just one of those
:46:15. > :46:18.things. In the final at least. Yes I think it is really handy that I have
:46:19. > :46:23.a day off, I think in terms of my fitness I need a day off, I think it
:46:24. > :46:28.works in my favour, I can go back and rest and come back on Friday.
:46:29. > :46:39.Thank you for talking to us. Thank you. Second is better than third in
:46:40. > :46:46.terms of the lane draw, but Indira Terrero was a good bit clear of
:46:47. > :46:51.Christine Ohuruogu. STUDIO: I guess that is what happens when you don't
:46:52. > :46:53.have the normal build-up to a major championship, she was surprised at
:46:54. > :46:59.how difficult she found certainly the last 150 metres, not her normal
:47:00. > :47:03.self, she came through as she normally seems to. You were not
:47:04. > :47:12.panicking. Under my breath I was panicking. I had a long chat with
:47:13. > :47:16.her, the duration of the flight from London to Switzerland about the 400
:47:17. > :47:20.and she was saying that when you don't race much you lose the
:47:21. > :47:26.instinctive feeling of when to actually attack, when to go. That
:47:27. > :47:31.showed in this race. She got up and looked good enough in the first 200
:47:32. > :47:35.metres but then, we are so used to her coming back through so strongly
:47:36. > :47:40.in the last 50 metres, it just sort of did not happen. She will take
:47:41. > :47:43.that away, go back to the drawing board and she will think about, just
:47:44. > :47:51.think about what went wrong there for her. She does have that fool day
:47:52. > :47:57.off which will be very handy. -- full. Let's hand you to Steve Cram
:47:58. > :48:04.because he has news of the women's qualification for the final of the
:48:05. > :48:17.100 metres. COMMENTATOR: Yes the bad news is that Asha Philip did not
:48:18. > :48:21.make it through. It comes down to thousands of a second, we thought
:48:22. > :48:25.there might be up possibility of nine in the final but they have
:48:26. > :48:29.stuck with eight and it is the Frenchwoman who will contest it,
:48:30. > :48:39.there will not be three British women in the final. Disappointment
:48:40. > :48:40.for Asha Philip, Christine Ohuruogu through thankfully safely if not
:48:41. > :48:47.surreal life. -- Syrian lay. This is how the second semifinal
:48:48. > :49:15.will line up. So who are the big rivals for
:49:16. > :49:30.Christine Ohuruogu? One of them will be all as Emily at -- Olha Zemlyak.
:49:31. > :49:34.She had a drugs ban back in 2009. Libania Grenot came here with the
:49:35. > :49:37.fastest time coming into the European Championships but looked
:49:38. > :49:42.completely out of sorts in qualification but she is attacking
:49:43. > :49:49.this hard. Marie Gayot watching hard-core right past her. With Barry
:49:50. > :49:59.grown-up likes to start quickly. Olha Zemlyak is going with her. Just
:50:00. > :50:14.the top two going through. It is Olha Zemlyak and Libania Grenot.
:50:15. > :50:22.Olha Zemlyak coming through, still well clear. Three to qualify. Aauri
:50:23. > :50:30.Lorena Bokesa will get the third spot. Much quicker than the first
:50:31. > :50:34.semifinal. I think there are a few tired athletes out there. It is
:50:35. > :50:38.difficult, we were discussing that in the hurdles the wind down the
:50:39. > :50:41.back straight, maybe they are getting out quickly and having to
:50:42. > :50:48.face the wind out of it in the home straight and tiring. Olha Zemlyak
:50:49. > :50:52.pretty strong. Yes pretty much went to form. And the time they have
:50:53. > :50:57.produced a little bit quicker than the first semifinal. Adds to the
:50:58. > :51:09.slight concerns for Christine Ohuruogu in the final. Will have to
:51:10. > :51:19.produce something pretty good. Olha Zemlyak looks the strongest going
:51:20. > :51:26.into the final I think. She had that very troubled start to her career,
:51:27. > :51:29.troubled to say the least, failed a drug test at the European junior
:51:30. > :51:34.championship and server two year ban and she has come back and is running
:51:35. > :51:40.very well she does look strong, not losing any form down the back
:51:41. > :51:47.straight. Libania Grenot very strong as well. But I think Olha Zemlyak
:51:48. > :51:54.will be the athlete to beat. The fact that that semifinal was quicker
:51:55. > :52:03.it means the fourth and fifth from this race will go through to the
:52:04. > :52:10.final. We can wrap all of that up, the qualification is now complete. I
:52:11. > :52:19.still think Christine Ohuruogu has a great chance. She will have a day to
:52:20. > :52:23.recover and rest. Olha Zemlyak and Libania Grenot our class athletes

:53:05. > :53:08.gold. We were talking about what he does next and how he moves things
:53:09. > :53:15.forward in his career, is there a reason why he would not want to go
:53:16. > :53:19.down to just one race? When you have trained for the five you might as
:53:20. > :53:25.well do the ten? Will it make a difference as he gets older to just
:53:26. > :53:28.focus on one? Absolutely, it is very hard to do the double at major
:53:29. > :53:33.championships is specially when there are heaps, it will be easier
:53:34. > :53:38.here because the heats have been cancelled. They are essentially
:53:39. > :53:45.running 20,000 metres on the track over the space of a week and that is
:53:46. > :53:49.very tough to do and recover from. As he matures a little bit, as he
:53:50. > :53:54.matures, I will not say gets older, he will find it harder, and he will
:53:55. > :53:59.find the competition level will be tough as well. So he may want to
:54:00. > :54:05.just target one race and prepare specifically for that. Of victory
:54:06. > :54:12.this evening in a field which is eminently beatable for him. That
:54:13. > :54:15.would help, settle things down, because there has been lots of

:54:20. > :54:26.performance with these things are little bit. Yes, I think so and I
:54:27. > :54:30.think he needs it right now. His interviews so far have been a bit
:54:31. > :54:35.downbeat. He has not been well, not racing as he would like. To get
:54:36. > :54:41.victory here would really give him the confidence that he seems to be
:54:42. > :54:45.lacking. We are going to begin the men's 400 metres semifinal heats
:54:46. > :54:51.shortly. Conrad Williams of Great Britain goes in the first, he has
:54:52. > :54:55.won five medals in the relays at major championships, is this time
:54:56. > :55:04.for him to mix it amongst the individual medals? Steve Cram is
:55:05. > :55:11.your commentator. COMMENTATOR: I think that is a stretch for Conrad
:55:12. > :55:15.Williams. He is not in the most difficult semifinal. I think
:55:16. > :55:20.Hudson-Smith has the most difficult of the three semifinals, the top two
:55:21. > :55:36.only going through. Kevin Borlee perhaps running better
:55:37. > :55:48.than his twin at the moment. Beat him in the Belgian championships.
:55:49. > :56:00.Lee Marvin Bone back here -- Lee-Marvin Bonevacia. Kamghe Gaba

:56:15. > :56:18.32 years of age, out in Lane 8, it would be good to see him up there
:56:19. > :56:25.and trying to content but this is going to be tough. He was third in
:56:26. > :56:30.his heat to come through, qualification was not that good.
:56:31. > :56:36.Rafal Omelko came through as a fastest loser and is on the inside.
:56:37. > :56:39.It is not just about getting through here, the laden line-up for the
:56:40. > :56:44.final, the importance of winning the semifinal, something the better
:56:45. > :56:53.athletes will be thinking about, Maksim Dyldin has got a great
:56:54. > :57:01.chance. All of them can chase Conrad Williams.
:57:02. > :57:10.Just being asked to rise, not sure if it is just the noise in the
:57:11. > :57:15.stadium. Dick athletes milling around, they are currently doing the
:57:16. > :57:32.javelin -- decathlon athletes. I saw a green card at one end and
:57:33. > :57:39.there seems to be a yellow card in lane two. I have never heard Alan
:57:40. > :58:01.speak French. The chief starter leaves it to the
:58:02. > :58:03.starter for this race. Just a quiet little word to Yannick Fonsat in
:58:04. > :58:10.lane two. Here we go again. First semifinal,
:58:11. > :58:32.Conrad Williams in lane eight. Safely away this time, just watching
:58:33. > :58:36.for who attacks this hard, Kevin Borlee has gone off quickly in lane
:58:37. > :58:43.three, trying to make ground on Maksim Dyldin. Conrad Williams has
:58:44. > :58:50.started quickly as always. Yannick Fonsat trying to follow Kevin Borlee
:58:51. > :58:55.through. Kevin Borlee looking good at the moment, lovely smooth action,
:58:56. > :59:01.Conrad Williams has gone hard, can he last it down in the home
:59:02. > :59:04.straight? Now they will all start to try to come through, Conrad Williams
:59:05. > :59:10.are running really through well here, Conrad Williams setting up the
:59:11. > :59:18.run brilliant Odin lane eight, he is holding on. 4586. That is about as
:59:19. > :59:23.good as you can do in lane eight, he has run his race but did the others?
:59:24. > :59:30.That was a strange one because if you said at the beginning that
:59:31. > :59:35.Conrad Williams would run 45.86I would have said I would not have
:59:36. > :59:38.fancied his chances coming in the top two. Kevin Borlee faded badly
:59:39. > :59:58.and the others were nothing at all, well done Conrad Williams. It was
:59:59. > :00:03.the giant German Kamghe Gaba who came through. You wouldn't have
:00:04. > :00:10.expected that to be good enough for the victory. There was plenty of
:00:11. > :00:18.control from Kevin Borlee there. You just expected more of him. Maksim
:00:19. > :00:24.Dyldin left him self with too much to do after the opening 200. Just a
:00:25. > :00:31.very good run from Conrad Williams. Nothing better than that but it was
:00:32. > :00:36.all that he needed. Very good. He is probably thinking, where on earth
:00:37. > :00:42.were they all? When you are in Lane 8, the only thing you can do is keep
:00:43. > :00:48.running hard. You are earning blind. You think they are probably going to
:00:49. > :01:03.come at some time and you have two stay strong but he hasn't had a site
:01:04. > :01:10.of anybody there. This split field in the decathlon. Arthur Abele has
:01:11. > :01:17.been a contender all the way through. He has been shouting his
:01:18. > :01:23.way from event to event. At his very best he is a 69 metre javelin
:01:24. > :01:29.thrower. That is below that. Throwing towards the pole vault
:01:30. > :01:35.mapped where the rest of the athletes are finishing that event.
:01:36. > :01:42.This is his final attempt at the javelin. Around 63 metres. Maybe
:01:43. > :01:50.hasn't gathered the points he would have needed to stay in contention
:01:51. > :01:54.for a medal. Congratulations on age performance from one of the most
:01:55. > :02:02.difficult lanes. Running your own race in style. The plan is to make
:02:03. > :02:09.it look as comfortable as possible. For me, it is all about qualifying.
:02:10. > :02:13.It was quite loaded. I love championships and I am in the final.
:02:14. > :02:20.Thoughts coming down the home straight? I saw it was all clear. I
:02:21. > :02:28.just decided to relax because there was a really strong back wind. I
:02:29. > :02:33.thought if I could keep Maicon poser and stay in the top two I would be
:02:34. > :02:39.in final. It is going to be a tough week because I am also in the relay
:02:40. > :02:43.and it is going to be hard. I have got a good team. A lot of good
:02:44. > :02:47.athletes here and we are getting treated really nice so all of the
:02:48. > :02:56.athletes are going to be ready for these five races. Good luck for the
:02:57. > :03:05.final. Thank you very much. Cheers. We mentioned that the decathletes
:03:06. > :03:10.had split into two fields. This is the last man standing in the pole
:03:11. > :03:17.vault. You'll co-sign Nicolas of the Netherlands. And he is clear. --
:03:18. > :03:35.you'll co-sign puts himself into contention with
:03:36. > :03:45.the pole vault. It will all come to a head later in the evening. He will
:03:46. > :03:59.join the German athletes who are vying for the medals. On Ward to the
:04:00. > :04:06.second semifinal of the men's 400 metres. Martyn Rooney, fingers
:04:07. > :04:08.crossed, he says. Listening to Conrad Williams talking about the
:04:09. > :04:12.wind in the back straight in particular, an explanation for the
:04:13. > :04:35.times that were a bit sluggish. Ricardo Dos Santos is a very
:04:36. > :04:40.talented 19-year-old Portuguese athlete. Richard Morrissey, the
:04:41. > :04:49.Irish runner in Lane 1. Garcia in Lane 5. He may well be in contention
:04:50. > :04:59.for one of the two automatic places. There is Richard Morrissey. A member
:05:00. > :05:04.of Shaftesbury and Barnet Harriers. Being asked to stand up, as they
:05:05. > :05:10.were in the last semifinal. Martin Ren?e just hearing a bit of
:05:11. > :05:18.disturbance perhaps. Ash Makro Rooney. As long as they are not
:05:19. > :05:28.under command it is fine to put your hand up. You have two have a very
:05:29. > :05:42.valid reason all you will get a warning. It is not enough to be a
:05:43. > :05:48.little bit unsettled. His explanation has been accepted.
:05:49. > :05:54.Nervous times. He knows he is in great form, he knows that he did not
:05:55. > :06:01.quite deliver at the Commonwealth Games. He stepped away from the
:06:02. > :06:07.relay where the men won gold so he could concentrate on this. If he
:06:08. > :06:15.gets through to the final, I'm sure he will be a contender for the goal.
:06:16. > :06:27.Maksim Dyldin is now depending on a fastest loser after his semifinal.
:06:28. > :06:37.To go through to the final automatically. Martyn Rooney, as he
:06:38. > :06:43.did in the final of the Commonwealth Games, left himself too much to do
:06:44. > :06:56.in the second half of the race but he has a decent start here. Easing
:06:57. > :06:58.his way past the Polish athlete. The Estonian set a national record in
:06:59. > :07:04.the heats and I wonder if he has gone off a little bit too fast.
:07:05. > :07:09.Martyn Rooney is sitting in third place at the moment but he should
:07:10. > :07:14.have a little bit left. He looks like he is ambling, strolling
:07:15. > :07:22.forward. Very easy. A little bit of a race behind him. Garcia comes
:07:23. > :07:31.through to take the second automatic place. 45.41. Garcia is happy. That
:07:32. > :07:35.was a very good run, Martyn Rooney is happy as well.
:07:36. > :07:40.was a very good run, Martyn Rooney is I am just looking at Colin. It is
:07:41. > :07:45.a bit strange. The athletes in that race were not as good as some of
:07:46. > :07:52.those in the first race but they ran better. Attacking hard in the first
:07:53. > :07:57.part, probably felt it in the second. Martyn Rooney is not
:07:58. > :07:57.panicking. He knows he is good in the home straight.
:07:58. > :08:02.panicking. He knows he is good in the Just that little move. He is
:08:03. > :08:07.looking across and relaxing, knowing he has made this nice and
:08:08. > :08:14.comfortable. Very good from Martyn Rooney. When you compare that to the
:08:15. > :08:19.first heat where Conrad Williams looked good. Kevin Borlee should
:08:20. > :08:25.have been a big threat, Maksim Dyldin should have been a good
:08:26. > :08:30.threat but they both ran poorly in the first round. Kevin Borlee is
:08:31. > :08:36.out. His time is not going to be quick enough. In the Commonwealth
:08:37. > :08:42.Games Martyn Rooney left himself with too much to do in the second
:08:43. > :08:48.half of the race. No chance of that. He was comfortable. He says he is in
:08:49. > :08:52.the form of his life and he sounds confident and bubbly. You can tell
:08:53. > :08:59.that he is a man very at ease with his form and full of confidence. He
:09:00. > :09:07.has so much to make amends, not to prove to anybody else but to
:09:08. > :09:13.himself. Now, all of a sudden, this is a real chance for him. The
:09:14. > :09:18.pressure will build. He really has expectation at these European
:09:19. > :09:26.Championships. He is with Phil now. Tremendous performance. It is
:09:27. > :09:29.growing in increments race by race, another controlled performance. I
:09:30. > :09:35.knew if I did the same as yesterday, it would be enough. They came out
:09:36. > :09:42.quicker around the bend and gave me a race which was good, I was able to
:09:43. > :09:50.react to it. You said this has been the main aim all year long and it is
:09:51. > :09:55.reaching fruition. Definitely. The Commonwealth Games are a massive
:09:56. > :09:59.opportunity but this is bigger. On the global scene this is the bigger
:10:00. > :10:04.championship. It is starting to come together and I just hope that I can
:10:05. > :10:21.have a good day's rest tomorrow and do a good job. Martyn Rooney is
:10:22. > :10:26.safely through in a good time. In tricky conditions Samuel Garcia goes
:10:27. > :10:55.through as well. At the moment, Dos Santos and Marek Niit are the
:10:56. > :10:59.fastest losers. Is it tougher than in the Commonwealth Games? It
:11:00. > :11:04.depends on the competition and where you set your targets for the season
:11:05. > :11:09.and where you want to aim for. In some events it is tougher to hold
:11:10. > :11:20.that. You have to choose it quite a long way out. So far, it is two out
:11:21. > :11:26.of two for Great Britain in the 400 metres. This time, it is the young
:11:27. > :11:32.pop, can he make it through to his first championship final. Steve Cram
:11:33. > :11:39.is your commentator. In this heat, Matthew Hudson-Smith has our hopes.
:11:40. > :11:47.He has a pretty tough semifinal but given how the first to turned out, I
:11:48. > :11:56.am not sure what to expect. One or two others have not performed.
:11:57. > :12:06.Matthew Hudson-Smith, his twitter handle: Matt on the floor. He
:12:07. > :12:15.sometimes seems that laid-back. This young man is going to be tough. He
:12:16. > :12:21.is having the season of his life. Donald Sanford will start pretty
:12:22. > :12:27.quickly. These tricky conditions soon to be affecting the judgement
:12:28. > :12:35.of these athletes. Mame-Ibra Anne of France, he won't championship with a
:12:36. > :12:43.really good performance. Brian Gregan of Ireland in Lane 7. Then
:12:44. > :12:47.Jonathan Borlee who has seen his twin brother already go out after a
:12:48. > :13:00.really poor performance in that first semifinal. After that second
:13:01. > :13:04.semifinal, he will not go through as a fastest loser. Can Matthew
:13:05. > :13:08.Hudson-Smith show some of the maturity he has displayed in the
:13:09. > :13:15.last month or so. Just 19 years of age. Still really getting to grips
:13:16. > :13:22.with the 400 metres but what a start to his career. Sub 45 seconds in
:13:23. > :13:30.Glasgow, Diamond league, to get him to the Commonwealth Games. Where he
:13:31. > :13:40.was part of the relay team and one with that brilliant last leg. Nicely
:13:41. > :13:49.away. The Polish athlete will sense already that Hudson-Smith has gone
:13:50. > :13:54.off very quickly. Donald Sanford always starts quickly, the tall
:13:55. > :14:05.athlete from Israel. He has already gone past an from France. The top to
:14:06. > :14:15.only go through. Mame-Ibra Anne has a lot of work to do. Hudson-Smith in
:14:16. > :14:21.a good position. Jonathan Borlee is hanging on. Matthew Hudson-Smith has
:14:22. > :14:28.to be very strong to stay in the top two. And he does. He got the chest
:14:29. > :14:33.out in front. A bit of a return to form for Jonathan Borlee. There was
:14:34. > :14:38.a little worry with three or four in contention down the home straight.
:14:39. > :14:45.But don't doubt his ability to fight all the way to the line. He has got
:14:46. > :14:50.that ability. When things are going on around him, he concentrates and
:14:51. > :14:53.he finishes his race will it live. He runs with an older head
:14:54. > :14:56.he finishes his race will it live. He runs with an older on his
:14:57. > :15:02.shoulders than his young age. He was comfortable again throughout. See
:15:03. > :15:08.the athletes gasping behind him. He went off fairly briskly. He says he
:15:09. > :15:15.was up against a very talented athlete, the Polish runner in line
:15:16. > :15:19.for. Just sat there and assessed the situation. It is a little bit breezy
:15:20. > :15:28.down the back straight but he didn't seem fazed at all. On the big stage,
:15:29. > :15:34.sometimes with the junk talented athletes, their performances can be
:15:35. > :15:41.inconsistent -- the young talented athlete. He seems to have experience
:15:42. > :15:46.beyond his age. He is in control, out in front. Working harder,
:15:47. > :15:52.obviously, but that looks fairly comfortable. In Martyn Rooney and
:15:53. > :15:56.Matthew Hudson-Smith, the top two going through to the final, perhaps.
:15:57. > :16:06.Steve Cram said he finish so brilliantly, you have done it
:16:07. > :16:09.again. I got out this time, which I am proud of,
:16:10. > :16:18.again. I got out this time, which I am proud because I was nervous. But
:16:19. > :16:21.yes, that is what I wanted to do. You made the final. This is so new
:16:22. > :16:29.to you, you have never done this before. This is completely new. It
:16:30. > :16:34.is an experience, I am learning from it, that was exactly what I wanted
:16:35. > :16:34.to do. As you were on the start line,
:16:35. > :16:39.it, that was exactly what I wanted to do. As you were Martyn Rooney
:16:40. > :16:44.said, come on! It is good there is such camaraderie. Yes, all three
:16:45. > :16:51.others are friends, we fight for each other, we want a British 1-2-3,
:16:52. > :16:54.really. What about the prospect of a medal? I will take it one step at a
:16:55. > :17:11.time, we will see how it goes. He is a joy to watch, the youthful
:17:12. > :17:20.exuberance. His innocence might stand him in good stead, because he
:17:21. > :17:25.has a great chance. A brilliant run from the Israeli. That was a very
:17:26. > :17:30.quick semifinal. Some of the athletes in the first semifinal must
:17:31. > :17:38.be thinking, what were we doing? It was so slow. The two fastest losers
:17:39. > :17:40.come from the third semifinal. Martyn Rooney with a lot more to
:17:41. > :17:53.give. Three qualifiers for the 400 metres
:17:54. > :17:57.flat, and it is great to see the blend of experience and youth, and
:17:58. > :18:03.Matthew Hudson-Smith is feeding of those around him who have more
:18:04. > :18:11.experience. Yes, Martyn Rooney has vast experience. He has tried to
:18:12. > :18:16.mental him. But it is great to see them getting through. Next, the 100
:18:17. > :18:52.metres, the men's semifinals, can we make it three out of three?
:18:53. > :18:56.Frenchman, is out, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey is the second
:18:57. > :19:00.fastest in his heat, so if he does not move his head 180 degrees in the
:19:01. > :19:08.last 20 metres, he might make it through. I was speaking to Darren
:19:09. > :19:14.Campbell, he thinks Harry could surprise a key people. He has been
:19:15. > :19:15.consistent, he is looking good, he is confident, let's see what he can
:19:16. > :19:26.do. Steve Cram is your commentator. What a great opportunity for Harry
:19:27. > :19:32.Aikines-Aryeetey after the withdrawal of Jimmy Vicault, the man
:19:33. > :19:34.who looked so good in qualification. Harry's qualification included the
:19:35. > :19:46.nod to the rest of the field, almost. He will not be doing that
:19:47. > :19:51.here. Denis Dmitrov, 20 years old. The Czech Republic runner should not
:19:52. > :19:56.be a threat. Jimmy Vicault should have been in Lane 3. Julian Reus
:19:57. > :20:00.came into the championships with such good form. He broke the German
:20:01. > :20:18.record. That time, 10.08, said earlier on in
:20:19. > :20:25.the year, but he has been around 10.1 all season long. The Italian
:20:26. > :20:38.seems to have been around forever, 28 years of age. James Dasaolu is in
:20:39. > :20:43.the second semifinal, he has got the tougher one. Dwain Chambers is in
:20:44. > :20:47.the third. Harry would have looked at the jaw and thought, this might
:20:48. > :20:52.be tricky, but with Jimmy Vicault gone, and the sort of form he is in,
:20:53. > :21:00.a nice victory here in the semifinal. Another thing to remark
:21:01. > :21:04.on, if you are in the first semifinal, let's say they get an
:21:05. > :21:12.hour or ten hour and ten minutes between this and the final, they get
:21:13. > :21:26.more rest than the athletes in the third semifinal.
:21:27. > :21:40.The first to go through to the final.
:21:41. > :21:50.A very good run from the row many and to get second. Just for a while,
:21:51. > :21:54.we were worried. It was not a great start from Harry, but he did not
:21:55. > :22:01.panic. Julian Reus not able to maintain his good start. He will be
:22:02. > :22:08.hugely disappointed, because if you had said, in the semifinal, second
:22:09. > :22:13.place, 10.29, really? I do not think Julian Reus will get through, but
:22:14. > :22:20.Harry does. The most important thing for us is that Harry makes his way
:22:21. > :22:23.through, and he did that. He handled the field quite comfortably.
:22:24. > :22:29.Cruising at the end, he did not have any panic from 85 metres to the
:22:30. > :22:33.tape. But if he really wants a medal, he needs a much better start,
:22:34. > :22:40.he needs to put himself in contention early. In this
:22:41. > :22:46.circumstance, he took control of the race from 60 metres. When you start
:22:47. > :22:50.to put your foot down on forecasts and start to close people down
:22:51. > :22:56.quickly, it makes you relax, because you know you have really got them in
:22:57. > :23:01.the bag. Harry would have found that out very quickly, even with his
:23:02. > :23:08.relatively weak start. He clawed his way through the field. By 60 metres,
:23:09. > :23:14.he was there or thereabouts. Will it be better for him to be in the mix
:23:15. > :23:18.or in one of the outside lanes? He has no choice, he is going to be in
:23:19. > :23:29.the middle, but it will be a good thing for him. It will help him out
:23:30. > :23:34.the blogs. Not a fiery semifinal, but one which Harry will be happy to
:23:35. > :23:40.have out of the way. A huge sigh of relief, 10.21. The Romain Ian, the
:23:41. > :23:49.surprise second-place, we would not have thought he would make it
:23:50. > :23:50.through. I am not sure the others will be quick enough to get through
:23:51. > :23:59.as fastest losers, but we will say. Through to the final, not the best
:24:00. > :24:06.of starts, but you came through strong. I have got some good top end
:24:07. > :24:10.speed, I thought about making sure I am in the final, with all of the
:24:11. > :24:14.delays and the things that have been going on, this is why it is a
:24:15. > :24:19.championship, you have to deal with what is thrown at you. I warmed up a
:24:20. > :24:25.couple of hours ago, so the body gets stale. I was not as sharp out
:24:26. > :24:30.of the blocks as yesterday, but we will work on that, and I am in the
:24:31. > :24:36.final. We appreciate you stopping. Mum, I am not scared!
:24:37. > :24:45.I am sure his mum did not say he was scared of Phil! He looked like he
:24:46. > :24:50.meant business, in spite of the rocky start, he got on with it. He
:24:51. > :24:54.knew there was an opportunity, he would have heard that Jimmy Vicault
:24:55. > :25:02.was out, so he had to get in the top two. I think he had a bad start. It
:25:03. > :25:09.was important not to panic. We know he is strong, he is good towards the
:25:10. > :25:15.end of the race. He needed to be. It was a really good run. It is the
:25:16. > :25:22.first of three, hopefully, we have James Dasaolu going in the second of
:25:23. > :25:26.the semifinals. Christoffel H the current European champion there.
:25:27. > :25:32.Currently, the best Frenchman, after his compatriot pulled out with his
:25:33. > :25:35.injury. But James Dasaolu will be hoping that he can get back to the
:25:36. > :25:41.kind of form which took him under ten seconds. It has been a delayed
:25:42. > :25:45.start to his season, but Andrew Cotton will tell you more.
:25:46. > :25:54.James Dasaolu, it is not just that he is coming back into form, but the
:25:55. > :25:59.inconsistencies that he had at championships last season, he blew
:26:00. > :26:04.hot and cold, but that seems to be a thing of the past. He will hope so.
:26:05. > :26:14.The rather slight figure for Finland. There is no Jimmy Vicault,
:26:15. > :26:23.but France have the second quickest qualifier, Christoffel Maitre. He is
:26:24. > :26:29.the defending champion, and possibly an even better to did meet a runner.
:26:30. > :26:31.James Dasaolu was easing up in his heat, he blew the field away in the
:26:32. > :26:40.first 50 metres. Again, the starter is unhappy. There
:26:41. > :26:55.are a few things blowing around. I think it was the Finnish athlete
:26:56. > :27:25.who was unhappy, he needs to do some more Jim Watt! -- gym work!
:27:26. > :27:34.Not the quickest run in the first semifinal. The top to go through
:27:35. > :27:55.automatically to the final. James Dasaolu takes the victory,
:27:56. > :28:02.Christophe Lemaitre second. It is quick, a very slight wind behind,
:28:03. > :28:08.but James Dasaolu has an impressive run. Christophe Lemaitre nearly got
:28:09. > :28:16.back, but James Dasaolu is safely through to the final. A good, strong
:28:17. > :28:19.run. We saw him yesterday in the heat, when he put his foot down, he
:28:20. > :28:31.could ease his way through the field. He went a bit quicker, 10.04.
:28:32. > :28:36.That was a really comfortable 10.04. Yesterday, what was good about
:28:37. > :28:40.James, between 20 and 30 metres, he seems to be able to ease away from
:28:41. > :28:47.the field, without them noticing. A good top end speed, which means he
:28:48. > :28:53.maintains his form well. I think he has come into this Championships, he
:28:54. > :28:58.has arrived in good shape, and perhaps ready to take the victory.
:28:59. > :29:05.It is quite cool the, later in the evening, and 10.04, a very slight
:29:06. > :29:11.wind behind, and Christophe Lemaitre has run a season's best, but he
:29:12. > :29:16.could not get there, James Dasaolu looking very good indeed. James
:29:17. > :29:26.Dasaolu and Christophe Lemaitre go through automatically. Jimmy Vicault
:29:27. > :29:46.ran 10.06 in the first round before he withdrew. James Dasaolu, slowest
:29:47. > :29:52.reaction time. But coming through. Just outside of his season's best.
:29:53. > :29:57.He can go quicker. He has to make the modification at the start of the
:29:58. > :30:07.race. But there is something great about an athlete when they are in
:30:08. > :30:12.shape. They move through the gears effortlessly. That is what James
:30:13. > :30:19.has. His start could be improved. It is how he drives from the ten metres
:30:20. > :30:28..3 to 30. When he is up into his running, he relaxes. An effortless
:30:29. > :30:33.bit of running. The aim in the championship was for him to come
:30:34. > :30:40.through and he is fit and healthy and to produce the goods each round.
:30:41. > :30:47.That has eluded him so far. Exactly, to progress and recover
:30:48. > :30:50.well. I guess that is why he did not want to speak, he wants to
:30:51. > :30:51.concentrate on recovering and make the next step forward into the
:30:52. > :31:05.final. The third semifinal. We will see if we can make it a
:31:06. > :31:08.hat-trick of British athletes through. Dwain Chambers, the one
:31:09. > :31:16.with the most experience of our sprinters. This is his sixth
:31:17. > :31:20.European Championships. It is a record equalling for a British
:31:21. > :31:29.athlete. Steve Cram is commentating. When the final was held -- is held,
:31:30. > :31:36.it will be a factor. It should be around one hour from now. They are
:31:37. > :31:42.running behind the schedule. Whether they catch up a little bit, not much
:31:43. > :31:58.more than an hour for these men. The third semifinal. I think Dwain
:31:59. > :32:06.Chambers would have been happy with the line-up. Mancini. Another who
:32:07. > :32:09.has recently returned from a drug ban will stop that affected the
:32:10. > :32:25.Swiss relay team dramatically. The Russian. 10.28. Not far from
:32:26. > :32:29.that in qualification. I am sure Dwain Chambers will have his eye on
:32:30. > :32:37.the top two. Fastest loser spot is still available. Lucas Jakubczyk has
:32:38. > :32:57.been having a good season. I think with the exception of Lucas
:32:58. > :33:03.Jakubczyk, Mikhail Idrisov could run well, but if Chambers runs his own
:33:04. > :33:07.race, he should qualify. It is a question of how fast. He will want
:33:08. > :33:18.to win, to be in the thick of things in the final.
:33:19. > :33:29.It is pretty cold in the stadium, but the wind has dropped. The third
:33:30. > :33:42.semifinal. The top two to go through.
:33:43. > :33:56.Chambers got a decent start. Lucas -- Lucas Jakubczyk gets it. It was
:33:57. > :34:00.into a headwind. Not three out of three for the British athletes, but
:34:01. > :34:10.it was enough. You could not see any other athlete giving Dwain Chambers
:34:11. > :34:19.something to think about. I think EE is off in the last two metres --
:34:20. > :34:31.eased off in the last few metres. Dwain Chambers did ease up. I wonder
:34:32. > :34:36.if he was looking at the screen to check his place. He moved away from
:34:37. > :34:43.the field quickly. He was cleared by 60. Waiting for the German to put
:34:44. > :34:47.his foot down. He gained a couple of centimetres and took the victory. We
:34:48. > :34:55.can see head-on, to see if there is a strain from the old body from
:34:56. > :34:59.Dwain Chambers. He may be one of the oldest in the field, but that means
:35:00. > :35:04.he is one of the most experienced. He has good performances under his
:35:05. > :35:09.belt already this season and making this European final, as he has said,
:35:10. > :35:15.is important to him will stop when it comes to the final, do not write
:35:16. > :35:23.off Dwain Chambers. He will give it all. He may keep some people out. I
:35:24. > :35:31.am not sure what to make of these semifinals. The British athletes
:35:32. > :35:37.going well. Lemaitre was left in the blocks. There is no Jimmy Vicaut.
:35:38. > :35:50.10.30 will get you into the final. The first heat, we said. Mancini
:35:51. > :36:01.just got the nod. They needed a photo finish. 10.38 will not be
:36:02. > :36:07.quick enough. I think Yazaldes Nascimento will go through as the
:36:08. > :36:16.fastest loser from the first heat. STUDIO: Mo Farah and the rest of the
:36:17. > :36:22.10,000 metres competitors are on the track. They are trying to catch up
:36:23. > :36:26.because of the delay. There was a 45 minute plan delay which ended up
:36:27. > :36:32.being almost an hour. They are hoping they can get the finals off
:36:33. > :36:38.as quickly as possible. It might mean the men and women's 100 metres
:36:39. > :36:43.finals will not be as delayed as we thought. Mo Farah is looking good,
:36:44. > :36:47.Paula, and ready to go, and hopefully getting himself another
:36:48. > :36:57.gold medal. Back to Phil Jones, with Dwain Chambers. Well done. You are
:36:58. > :37:06.through to another final. 16 years after your first. You are making me
:37:07. > :37:14.look older! For what it is worth, I have got myself into the final. I am
:37:15. > :37:23.glad I got myself there. I have to keep myself in check, go downstairs,
:37:24. > :37:28.try to keep warm and run. It is a quick turnaround, but this is where
:37:29. > :37:33.experience counts. Most definitely. It will not be easy. But I have to
:37:34. > :37:42.get out and do the best I can. All the best for the final. Thank you. I
:37:43. > :37:47.cannot tell you how jealous I am from the gold foil. It is freezing.
:37:48. > :37:54.The 10,000 metres athletes will not care about that, Paula. They will
:37:55. > :37:57.want to get on with it. They have seen their event delayed. They could
:37:58. > :38:02.probably have brought them out early because they could have got on with
:38:03. > :38:09.the race, but it would have upset their reparations. The officials
:38:10. > :38:16.were trying to get them strip down and they were not too keen. Now they
:38:17. > :38:20.will want to get on with it. For all the mixed bag of results, illness
:38:21. > :38:26.and the way this season has panned out, it is good to see Mo Farah
:38:27. > :38:33.back. Stripping off ready to start this. Steve Cram and Brendan Foster.
:38:34. > :38:41.If you wind the clock back to 2006 and the European Championships. I do
:38:42. > :38:48.not think the weather was good in those days. Mo Farah lost out in a
:38:49. > :38:52.kick finished to a Spanish athlete. A lot has happened since then. He
:38:53. > :38:58.comes into this as the red-hot favourite. Maybe not in temperature!
:38:59. > :39:04.You look down the start list, and a fit and healthy Mo Farah with not
:39:05. > :39:10.consider any of them a threat. But, of course, you have to run your 25
:39:11. > :39:19.laps. He will have Andy Vernon for company. And a few familiar names
:39:20. > :39:23.from his past in cross country and European Championships. In these
:39:24. > :39:27.chilly conditions it will be interesting to see what happens.
:39:28. > :39:39.Whether or not they accept the inevitable. The Frenchman knows like
:39:40. > :39:46.everybody else in this field that when it comes to the end, there is
:39:47. > :39:50.nobody better than Mo Farah. It will be interesting to see if they accept
:39:51. > :40:03.that and think, OK, there is a silver and bronze medal and OK.
:40:04. > :40:07.Chilly conditions. Pretty good the 10,000 metre running. Andy Vernon
:40:08. > :40:28.had a great start to the season. Running a personal best over 5000
:40:29. > :40:32.metres. A lot of the British contingent have been together
:40:33. > :40:34.preparing for these championships. They have come in late to Z?rich.
:40:35. > :41:04.But hopefully well prepared. Mo Farah and an attempt to take this
:41:05. > :41:09.title. He won in Barcelona in 2010 in style. Is this an opportunity for
:41:10. > :41:21.him to do exactly the same in Z?rich? Brendan Foster has smoothly
:41:22. > :41:25.shifted Colin Jackson out of the seat next to me and managed to
:41:26. > :41:30.squeeze himself into the seats next to me. Like everybody else,
:41:31. > :41:33.Brendan, and everybody connected with the Championships, delighted Mo
:41:34. > :41:40.Farah has made it to a championship this summer. We are delighted. He is
:41:41. > :41:45.at the back of the field, a familiar tactic. Get the first couple of
:41:46. > :41:54.laps, jog around and take it easy, get rid of the nerves. He almost
:41:55. > :41:59.stumbled. Get the race going, get rid of the nerves. Start to relax
:42:00. > :42:04.into it. And, eventually, he will let them know he is here. We are
:42:05. > :42:12.saying we are relieved he is here and I am sure he is relieved. He has
:42:13. > :42:16.had a dramatic couple of months. He has had a lot of controversy with
:42:17. > :42:20.the media and with his own announcement of his plans. He has
:42:21. > :42:26.had a lot of things going on but it is great to see him back in action
:42:27. > :42:30.in the Championships. It was the European Championships in 2006 where
:42:31. > :42:37.we saw Mo Farah win the silver medal. He probably should have won
:42:38. > :42:41.that, against a Spaniard, but four years later that was the start for
:42:42. > :42:49.Mo Farah, a couple of glorious years. For years, in fact. The year
:42:50. > :43:01.in between has not been great. Let's hope this is the start of more runs.
:43:02. > :43:12.Familiar figures in this field, including Serhiy Lebid. Nine times
:43:13. > :43:22.cross-country champion. I think. He will not figure. The one who might
:43:23. > :43:28.be one to watch, Daniele Meucci. At Barcelona three years ago. We had Mo
:43:29. > :43:33.Farah, Chris Thompson. A shame that Chris Thompson did not make it. He
:43:34. > :43:39.has an injury. Chris Thompson and Daniel Mooney Ute she had a big
:43:40. > :43:59.battle on the last lap, -- Daniele Meucci.
:44:00. > :44:27.Arikan, one of the two Turkish athletes in this. Meucci, and also
:44:28. > :44:35.Arikan, they are known to Mo Farah. Mo Farah in the middle of the pack.
:44:36. > :44:47.He moved from the back quite suddenly, Mo Farah. Right in the
:44:48. > :44:55.middle of the field now. Bouabdellah Tahri, he could be one of the
:44:56. > :45:00.dangers. These athletes often have two run heats in the world, the
:45:01. > :45:04.Olympics, but here they are today. You would have thought a couple of
:45:05. > :45:10.them would have given themselves a chance to run a reasonably fast one,
:45:11. > :45:17.because you will not get that chance again. Mo Farah is letting them know
:45:18. > :45:22.he is there. I think that is clever. Let them know who is the boss. He is
:45:23. > :45:32.the boss. Settling down at the front, doing his little bit. He has
:45:33. > :45:36.got so many options in terms of how he can win this race. He could run
:45:37. > :45:45.away from them, because there is nobody in his class, although he
:45:46. > :45:53.does not know what shape he is in, so when he decides to run away is up
:45:54. > :46:01.to him. He will hopefully have the 5000 to come as well, so why expend
:46:02. > :46:02.more energy than you have to? Polat Kemboi Arikan sparked into a bit of
:46:03. > :46:18.action. Polat Kemboi Arikan slowing it down
:46:19. > :46:23.again. He will do this to war three times. I think he gets bored in
:46:24. > :46:29.races like this, he thinks, I will look at who is in the front. There
:46:30. > :46:43.he goes. It is polar Game Boy and we can, fair enough. Back as we were.
:46:44. > :46:53.There is Andy Vernon, a bit further down, a bit strung out now, but
:46:54. > :47:00.still no real pace on. I have just seen the Dutch athlete step off the
:47:01. > :47:05.track. We are looking at Andy Vernon. He ran quite well in the
:47:06. > :47:08.Commonwealth Games, he acquitted himself well, he has won a lot of
:47:09. > :47:14.races this year. He will get better in time. He is with Mo Farah, the
:47:15. > :47:21.master, not doing him any harm at all. When you look at this field, is
:47:22. > :47:29.anybody going to try to beat Mo Farah? You could take him on, and
:47:30. > :47:33.Polat Kemboi Arikan starts to accelerate and starts to build,
:47:34. > :47:42.increased the pace, open the gap, and Mo Farah letting it happen.
:47:43. > :47:45.Daniele Meucci just behind Mo Farah. That group pulling away from Andy
:47:46. > :47:50.Vernon. He has got to work a bit harder. There are medals available
:47:51. > :47:55.tonight, you do not have to be a world beater to get a medal here.
:47:56. > :47:59.You might have to be able to beater to beat Mo Farah, and Polat Kemboi
:48:00. > :48:08.Arikan is stretching them along, opening a gap. Mo Farah will keep an
:48:09. > :48:14.eye on it. That is all he needs to do. You would not want to let him
:48:15. > :48:19.get 15 seconds ahead, but he does not seem that keen on following him
:48:20. > :48:31.at the moment. Daniele Meucci thinks, this is a chance for me.
:48:32. > :48:35.Daniele Meucci, Ali Kaya, you take five or six athletes away, you can
:48:36. > :48:40.start thinking about medals in the latter stages, and Daniele Meucci
:48:41. > :48:41.will enjoy the fact that Polat Kemboi
:48:42. > :48:43.latter stages, and Daniele Meucci will enjoy the fact that Arikan has
:48:44. > :48:49.gone, but he has missed the break a bit. Polat Kemboi Arikan, the
:48:50. > :48:54.defending champion. He has had three races this year, one of them was a
:48:55. > :49:01.pretty good half marathon. He ran in the World Championships last year in
:49:02. > :49:07.this event. Did not finish. He was in the Olympic 10,000 metre final.
:49:08. > :49:13.He was a fair bit behind, in ninth place. Apart from his 10,000 metre
:49:14. > :49:19.victory in the European cup, Brendan, that was in hot conditions,
:49:20. > :49:26.and Polat Kemboi Arikan was the winner. Daniele Meucci was in the
:49:27. > :49:31.race as well. It was the two Turkish athlete in this race who finished
:49:32. > :49:40.first and second. That is the quickest climate so far. -- quickest
:49:41. > :49:46.kilometre so far. Just passing Mo Farah is the other former Kenyans
:49:47. > :49:53.athlete, Ali Kaya. I was looking at the leader, the reigning champion.
:49:54. > :49:59.Mo Farah brand the 5000 in 2012, he won that, and he used it as a
:50:00. > :50:03.preparation for the Olympic Games, and did not bother with the 10,000
:50:04. > :50:07.metres, but Polat Kemboi Arikan was the second European finisher, and
:50:08. > :50:17.Ali Kaya is stretching catalogue. Looking at the leader, he is running
:50:18. > :50:24.quite hard. That lap slowed down, he ran a couple of 65 is, and then a
:50:25. > :50:29.68. The 65 creates the gap, and then they have settled. He has got a
:50:30. > :50:38.lead, but it is not getting any bigger, but not being closed down
:50:39. > :50:45.too much, although Ali Kaya, a controversial figure, he changed
:50:46. > :50:49.allegiance, he went to Turkey, he had is -- his allegiance move
:50:50. > :51:00.forward, because he had been living in Turkey, but after he won a medal,
:51:01. > :51:02.he went straight back to Kenya, where he is not supposed to be
:51:03. > :51:10.living any more. Who kept the medal? I presume he got it
:51:11. > :51:14.eventually, but I know that these allegiances are something that we
:51:15. > :51:18.are not too happy with them they are given to easily, and when they are
:51:19. > :51:21.put forward in terms of serving their time, if you are genuinely
:51:22. > :51:27.living in the country, it should not happen, there should be better
:51:28. > :51:33.checks made. Russia have just signed up a couple of Kenyans, it is the
:51:34. > :51:39.flag of convenience. We have done it in Britain, it is a difficult area.
:51:40. > :51:43.It sometimes makes a mockery. The European Championships, you have to
:51:44. > :51:47.be careful, if you end up with lots of people who are just handed
:51:48. > :51:57.European nationality very quickly, enabling them to compete, that is
:51:58. > :52:01.something that I think they should stick by the rules for. If you have
:52:02. > :52:10.to wait two years, you have to wait two years. 15 laps to go. The
:52:11. > :52:17.reigning champion, Polat Kemboi Arikan, the former Kenyans athlete,
:52:18. > :52:23.running to Turkey, and chasing him is his team-mate, Ali Kaya, drinking
:52:24. > :52:27.the field back to him. He had been working hard, but then he slowed
:52:28. > :52:32.down. Losing ground with every lap down, his head is bobbing and
:52:33. > :52:37.rolling a bit, and Mo Farah is having a really comfortable ride, as
:52:38. > :52:42.he comes closer to the lead. He will let them know he is here again, and
:52:43. > :52:49.remind them, you are looking at a fine athlete, and Olympic champion,
:52:50. > :52:55.a world champion. And a very accomplished Segway driver! It is
:52:56. > :53:03.pretty neat, I would love to have a go at that. Did you have to balance
:53:04. > :53:10.that, Steve? I think it is all about balance. He has got very good in
:53:11. > :53:18.size. I think that is how it is controlling it, anyway! Polat Kemboi
:53:19. > :53:24.Arikan is leading, from Ali Kaya, and Mo Farah is keeping an eye on
:53:25. > :53:35.things. Bashir Abdi of Belgium slotted in behind. Danieli Bellucci,
:53:36. > :53:38.Andy Vernon. If you had to pick out the top of the dozen, you are there
:53:39. > :53:47.in that group, and as soon as they put on any pace... And lot of these
:53:48. > :53:50.guys, apart from this bunch, will struggle to get qualifying times for
:53:51. > :53:53.World Championships. They might have hoped things would have been slower
:53:54. > :54:03.tonight to keep them involved a bit longer. But Polat Kemboi Arikan put
:54:04. > :54:09.paid to that early on. One more lap to go, and then it will be the
:54:10. > :54:13.halfway point. Mo Farah has had it really comfortable, they have done
:54:14. > :54:20.nothing serious, they have kept the pace reasonably steady. The tyrant
:54:21. > :54:27.-- talent gathered towards the front of the field, and I am delighted to
:54:28. > :54:38.see Andy Vernon there. He is working himself into a good position. 13
:54:39. > :54:42.laps to go, and Andy Vernon, after his performance in the Commonwealth
:54:43. > :54:45.Games, sixth place in the Commonwealth Games, he is trying to
:54:46. > :54:52.take the opportunity of getting at least that in the European
:54:53. > :54:57.Championships. The two Turkish athlete, the Kenyans running for
:54:58. > :55:03.Turkey, swapped the pace again, and Polat Kemboi Arikan back into the
:55:04. > :55:11.lead. Coming towards the halfway point. The 5000 metre point will be
:55:12. > :55:16.reached. You will get the second half will be cooking and that, if
:55:17. > :55:23.nothing for the last couple of lads. They may run under 28 minutes. Only
:55:24. > :55:27.ten of these guys have run under 28 minutes, so another one here would
:55:28. > :55:37.be an addition. Andy Vernon working well. Mo Farah looks great, he looks
:55:38. > :55:40.relaxed, content in third place, he has only made a move to let
:55:41. > :55:48.everybody know he is there, Daniele Meucci behind him. 12 laps to go in
:55:49. > :55:56.the men's 10,000 metres. The 10,000 metre final in the Commonwealth
:55:57. > :55:59.Games was about 11 or 12 days ago. Disappointment for everybody,
:56:00. > :56:06.including Mo Farah, that he could not contended that race. It was a
:56:07. > :56:12.great racer. The defending champion sprinting through in the latter
:56:13. > :56:23.stages and nicking it at the end. For Mo Farah, he is not technically
:56:24. > :56:27.defending the championship. Reduced to have these European Championships
:56:28. > :56:33.every four years, and then in 2012, for the first time, they changed, to
:56:34. > :56:38.every two years, Mo Farah randy 5000, but not the 10,000. It was
:56:39. > :56:44.three weeks before the Olympic Games. That is a problem with the
:56:45. > :56:47.Olympic -- with the European Championships, they will be held in
:56:48. > :56:54.the same summer as the Olympic games, so in 2016, event that we de
:56:55. > :56:59.Janeiro is halfway around the world, it was one thing having them in
:57:00. > :57:05.Helsinki and the Olympics in the same continent, but I am not sure
:57:06. > :57:11.many distance runners will target the European Championships in 2016.
:57:12. > :57:19.69 seconds, that lap, this is really easy for Mo Farah. The world record
:57:20. > :57:25.for 10,000 metres, the average lap pace is about 63 seconds. They are
:57:26. > :57:30.going round in 69 seconds. That is great for Mo Farah, it is so
:57:31. > :57:35.comfortable. We are assuming that his work that he has been able to do
:57:36. > :57:41.has kept his pace and speed. The marathon in the middle of April was
:57:42. > :57:47.an interlude, he trained very hard for it, but it was not to be. For
:57:48. > :57:53.the moment, the marathon would not figure in his plans. He says he
:57:54. > :57:59.wants to not do another marathon until after the next Olympic Games.
:58:00. > :58:04.It was an ancient sting experiment. It was not a great success, and he
:58:05. > :58:11.said as much, but he has got that behind him. He had a recent illness,
:58:12. > :58:16.which has brought him into this championship with a view doubts and
:58:17. > :58:20.questions. He has also had some difficulty in persuading everybody
:58:21. > :58:27.of his intentions, but his intention is clear tonight, he wants to win
:58:28. > :58:31.his fifth European, sorry, his fourth European gold medal, his
:58:32. > :58:37.fifth medal overall in the European Championships. Accelerating a
:58:38. > :58:44.little, going past the second of the Turkish athlete, who stumbled a bit
:58:45. > :58:49.there, followed by Bashir Abdi, another athlete from Somalia, who Mo
:58:50. > :58:55.Farah knows very well. Andy Vernon running extremely powerfully,
:58:56. > :58:59.slotting in there. He is working himself well into a position. Fifth
:59:00. > :59:08.place. Daniele Meucci on the outside. He is well in the mix,
:59:09. > :59:14.still comfortable. Mo Farah having a look around, checking who is there.
:59:15. > :59:18.He sees Bashir Abdi, both of them Somalian born. They know which other
:59:19. > :59:30.quite well. He knows Andy Vernon well, and Daniele Meucci.
:59:31. > :59:40.All very familiar here. Polat Kemboi Arikan, he knows from
:59:41. > :59:45.cross-country. He will not know Ali Kaya so much, the 20-year-old.
:59:46. > :59:51.Nothing really happening yet, nothing to disturb him, nothing to
:59:52. > :59:57.shake this up. When you are running 68 and 69, the odd one popping down
:59:58. > :00:03.to 67, when Polat Kemboi Arikan moves it on a bit, as Brendan said,
:00:04. > :00:08.it is no problem at all. Almost just waiting for the laps to click away,
:00:09. > :00:13.for the inevitable to happen. I wonder whether any of the others
:00:14. > :00:17.will think, OK, we are not going to be Mo Farah in the last lap, but
:00:18. > :00:28.somebody like Andy Vernon, might he go hard in the last three laps?
:00:29. > :00:39.Eight laps to go and somebody like Andy Vernon, you might be right,
:00:40. > :00:44.Steve. Bob Tahri, he has a good finish and is strong. He can run
:00:45. > :00:47.from a long way out. I think when he gets going he will be competitive.
:00:48. > :00:56.Let's hope Andy Vernon will be competitive. So simple, so easy, so
:00:57. > :01:01.comfortable, the pace for Mo Farah. When you look at the personal best,
:01:02. > :01:06.45 seconds faster than anybody else, he is. And apart from the fact he
:01:07. > :01:11.knows they will not run quickly, he knows he is faster than everybody
:01:12. > :01:14.else. In this field, you will wonder if anyone will try to beat him and
:01:15. > :01:23.if they do, it will be on the last lap. You talk about the gap he has
:01:24. > :01:28.in terms of personal best. In terms of last laps, there is nobody who
:01:29. > :01:36.can run two, three seconds as quickly as Mo Farah. I do not think
:01:37. > :01:43.he needs to run a 53. He could win comfortably with a 55. Bob Tahri, he
:01:44. > :01:48.was never best with super-speed. Mo Farah coming to the front little
:01:49. > :01:54.bit. He is playing with them. It will be somebody like Meucci, maybe
:01:55. > :02:01.Arikan, who is directing traffic all the time. He would make a good
:02:02. > :02:04.traffic policeman! Mo Farah running at the front for no apparent
:02:05. > :02:13.reason. If anything, he slowed it down. When you are as good as he is
:02:14. > :02:17.and is fast and strong, you have an athlete of his calibre, it has a
:02:18. > :02:22.mesmeric effect on the field. They are running around with him, all
:02:23. > :02:29.surrounding him. He looks over his shoulder, caps who is there, waiting
:02:30. > :02:36.for something to happen. Six laps to go in the men's 10,000 metres, and
:02:37. > :02:41.seven athletes in the group. Two British athletes, led by Mo Farah.
:02:42. > :02:46.Andy Bernard Manning well. It is good for him to get the experience
:02:47. > :02:57.of international competition. Two athletes from Kenya, representing
:02:58. > :03:07.Turkey. Bob Tahri, starting to think about getting closer. I watched him
:03:08. > :03:13.running the 10,000 metres earlier in the year. I heard he was targeting
:03:14. > :03:21.the 10,000 at the Europeans. He has come on a bit since then. Meucci
:03:22. > :03:25.knows he does not have the pace of Bob Tahri. Andy Vernon can sprint
:03:26. > :03:32.more. I know he thinks that people do not recognise it, but if he is
:03:33. > :03:39.fresh enough, Andy Vernon can sprint more. Nobody is wanting to do
:03:40. > :03:46.anything, Brendan. Another lap is ticked off. Five to go. All of them
:03:47. > :03:50.should not be feeling too much of the pace of the race, because it has
:03:51. > :03:59.not been fast. Nobody wanting to have a go. Mo Farah just running in
:04:00. > :04:05.the front, not trying to do anything special. Just allowing them to be
:04:06. > :04:09.bossed by Mo Farah. The effort by Meucci was a surprise. He did not do
:04:10. > :04:15.anything. Andy Vernon, hitting the front. Trying to stretch it, trying
:04:16. > :04:28.to do something about it. Mo Farah responded quickly. Andy Vernon needs
:04:29. > :04:34.to work closer to Bob Tahri. Going down the back straight and
:04:35. > :04:41.stretching them. Meucci's effort one lap ago, it looks like it ran out of
:04:42. > :04:49.steam. Does he have anything left? Andy Vernon at the back of the
:04:50. > :04:59.group, wanting to get closer. This is the distance they often use in
:05:00. > :05:08.training. Four laps to go. The two Turkish athletes, Kaya and Arikan.
:05:09. > :05:16.Bob Tahri. Meucci and Andy Vernon. It has not been a classic race. They
:05:17. > :05:22.are almost bowing to the superiority of Mo Farah, who hits the front.
:05:23. > :05:26.This time, a little bit for real. Now he is in the driving seat and
:05:27. > :05:32.will make them go past him. Settling down. Just stretching, running fast
:05:33. > :05:40.enough to keep them at bay and the gap is opening. I think he is
:05:41. > :05:47.playing with them. That was nothing more than a stretch of the legs, I
:05:48. > :05:52.think. I like the fact Andy Vernon, when he thought Mo Farah was going,
:05:53. > :05:57.at least responded. But all that Mo Farah was doing was stretching out.
:05:58. > :06:02.Three laps to go and he is checking where everybody is. He needs to be
:06:03. > :06:06.careful, turning all the way around like that. Coaches always say not to
:06:07. > :06:12.do that, you can end up falling over. He does not need to. There is
:06:13. > :06:18.the big screen. I am not sure what he is worried about. I think you
:06:19. > :06:23.spent the first couple of laps finding out where the big screen
:06:24. > :06:28.was. He was looking at it earlier. I think he will hold them off from
:06:29. > :06:34.here. He goes down the back straight. 1000 metres remaining. He
:06:35. > :06:42.has not had to exert himself, do anything special. He will have to
:06:43. > :06:48.work hard for this. You can bet this will be a lot quicker. Andy Vernon,
:06:49. > :06:55.putting himself in a good place. That is good by Andy Vernon. He is
:06:56. > :06:59.running struggling. Bob Tahri has drifted off the back of the group,
:07:00. > :07:04.one of the dangers going missing. Andy Vernon on the outside in a good
:07:05. > :07:14.position and Mo Farah in the controlling position. The turkey
:07:15. > :07:24.athletes just behind Meucci and Bashir Abdi. Andy Vernon, this is
:07:25. > :07:30.starting to look better for him. If he has enough in his legs, he cannot
:07:31. > :07:37.go quickly, he cannot sprint, it looks like he is breathing heavily.
:07:38. > :07:42.The Kenyans now representing Turkey will fancy their chances of a medal.
:07:43. > :07:49.It is a question of when Mo Farah will start to kick. He keeps looking
:07:50. > :08:03.at the big screen. It would be great if Andy Vernon got a medal. Andy
:08:04. > :08:10.Vernon. What will the others do? Meucci has gone. Bashir Abdi looks
:08:11. > :08:16.like he is struggling. They come to the Bell and Mo Farah is controlling
:08:17. > :08:23.the last couple of laps. Andy Vernon, coming a long way on the
:08:24. > :08:27.outside. Mo Farah doing what we know he does best. He hates to accelerate
:08:28. > :08:34.down the back straight and hold them at every point. Andy Vernon is
:08:35. > :08:40.running well in fourth place. Two Turkish athletes between him and Mo
:08:41. > :08:47.Farah. Mo Farah is kicking again. He has to control it. He has a couple
:08:48. > :08:54.more accelerations to make. Mo Farah has work to do to make sure of the
:08:55. > :09:01.gold medal. Kaya is on his shoulder. He should have got away
:09:02. > :09:05.from the by now, but now he goes. Mo Farah will come away with the wind.
:09:06. > :09:13.Andy Vernon is going to get the silver! Gold for Mo Farah and Andy
:09:14. > :09:21.Vernon, a brilliant run to get the silver medal. Mo Farah having to
:09:22. > :09:26.work pretty hard in the end. But what a run for Andy Vernon to get
:09:27. > :09:33.the silver medal. Mo Farah, that is the expected results, but we did not
:09:34. > :09:41.expect the 1-2. The home straight, it was still up for grabs. There was
:09:42. > :09:48.an opportunity for Kaya to cause an upset. Andy Vernon, it has been a
:09:49. > :09:53.difficult year for him, as well as Mo Farah. He started well and it
:09:54. > :09:58.started to go wrong for him, but it has come good at the end. For Mo
:09:59. > :10:04.Farah, it has been a bit of a journey to get to this gold medal.
:10:05. > :10:10.One down, one more to go. He controlled it for the last few laps.
:10:11. > :10:16.It is a years since we have seen that! Thank goodness he is back in
:10:17. > :10:21.shape. It was not a classic. He had to work hard. He will be delighted
:10:22. > :10:27.the way Andy Vernon ran. Great Britain, 1-2, just as they were in
:10:28. > :10:32.2010, when Chris Thompson came second. That will be the picture in
:10:33. > :10:38.tomorrow's papers. Mo Farah is back in business. He did not look
:10:39. > :10:43.absolutely brilliant, but he was good enough to beat this field and
:10:44. > :10:48.become European champion for the fourth time. And the salute! We have
:10:49. > :11:00.not the net for a while. It is nice to see. Nobody tried to beat him
:11:01. > :11:05.except on the last lap. And it was a British athlete, Andy Vernon, sixth
:11:06. > :11:09.in the Common of games and now second in the European
:11:10. > :11:14.Championships. A great photograph. Delighted to see Mo Farah back. Not
:11:15. > :11:19.as delighted he is, after the troubled few weeks he has had, the
:11:20. > :11:24.troubled period leading up to this. Mo Farah tried to control it from
:11:25. > :11:38.600 metres. That is what he had to do. Once you get in front there, you
:11:39. > :11:42.do not want anybody to pass. It was that building inevitability, but, in
:11:43. > :11:48.the end, a little bit harder than Mo Farah would have liked. When he
:11:49. > :11:52.crossed the line, the last thing he might have expected to see was Andy
:11:53. > :11:58.Vernon. Andy Vernon went a long way around on the last lap and stop Mo
:11:59. > :12:03.Farah got a good run, he was in the best place. Brendan, talk is through
:12:04. > :12:07.the last lap. As they approach the Bell, Andy Vernon went for the gap.
:12:08. > :12:14.He thought, there is two of them, I will have to go wide. Mo Farah hit
:12:15. > :12:18.the front and poor Andy Vernon hat to come along way around. I wish the
:12:19. > :12:25.lap runners would move around, that used to be the convention. Mo Farah
:12:26. > :12:30.being chased by the two Kenyan athletes representing Turkey. On the
:12:31. > :12:36.back straight, Andy Vernon is really working. Mo Farah, accelerating, a
:12:37. > :12:43.54 seconds last lap. That is not vintage Mo Farah, it is very good Mo
:12:44. > :12:49.Farah. We have seen him run quicker in a race of this pace. Whatever we
:12:50. > :12:53.say about Mo Farah, he is a great runner, he is also a great
:12:54. > :13:05.competitor. That is him saying, I want this. On his way to his gold
:13:06. > :13:10.medal. Britain's most prolific gold-medallists. Nine gold medals in
:13:11. > :13:17.major championships. Nobody has done better. And we have had great
:13:18. > :13:21.athletes over the years. A fantastic performance by Mo Farah,
:13:22. > :13:27.eventually. And well done to Andy Vernon. Brilliant. I know somebody
:13:28. > :13:33.will have enjoyed those performances. Paula, expected a gold
:13:34. > :13:40.medal for Mo Farah, but Andy Vernon, a brilliant silver. Absolutely. Andy
:13:41. > :13:44.Vernon has had a tough time. We have talked about Mo Farah having a tough
:13:45. > :13:49.time, but Andy has struggled with a hamstring injury and has had to go
:13:50. > :13:55.back to basics and put down winter training sessions to get himself
:13:56. > :13:59.into shape. He ran really well. He suffered a little bit with one lap
:14:00. > :14:04.to go and he had to go around the lap runners, who moved out as they
:14:05. > :14:08.saw the other runners coming inside of them. That almost cost him. He
:14:09. > :14:12.looked back in the finishing straight. I will have words about
:14:13. > :14:22.that! I think he could have been closer to Mo Farah. You can see on
:14:23. > :14:26.the track how much it has taken out of him. He should be proud of the
:14:27. > :14:31.silver medal and the way he salvaged his season from where he has been
:14:32. > :14:35.with injury. You have to feel for Chris Thompson, the other British
:14:36. > :14:39.athlete who could have been in the race. If he was in shape, we could
:14:40. > :14:44.have seen three up there in the final stages. You can see what it
:14:45. > :14:56.means to Mo Farah. This is what he needed to get back out there and
:14:57. > :15:05.win. Mo Farah wins his fourth European gold medal. The rain is
:15:06. > :15:15.streaming down now. The crowd are enjoying the celebrations. The union
:15:16. > :15:21.Jack draped across the shoulders of the British athlete. A great 1-2. It
:15:22. > :15:27.was Mo Farah and Chris Thompson in Barcelona, now it is Mo Farah and
:15:28. > :15:36.Andy Vernon. A brilliant performance from the two of them.
:15:37. > :15:42.The times are not important, it was a closer race than we thought in the
:15:43. > :15:47.end, but what a resort for Great Britain.
:15:48. > :15:54.A fabulous result, Mo Farah did what he had to do, but Andy Vernon, what
:15:55. > :15:59.a run. It has not been a straightforward season, and now we
:16:00. > :16:03.get to celebrate another great British performance, because this
:16:04. > :16:08.time yesterday, Jo Pavey was winning her gold medal for the 10,000
:16:09. > :16:16.metres. She is going to receive her medal at the ceremony. It's remind
:16:17. > :16:21.ourselves... Here she is, about two stand on the mushroom -- rostrum.
:16:22. > :16:33.Steve Cram will call this one. In some ways, the final last night
:16:34. > :16:37.was so special, not because of the British victory, but because it was
:16:38. > :16:46.unexpected, because of everything that had gone on before, leading
:16:47. > :16:54.into these championships. For France, their hopes were in the
:16:55. > :16:55.hands of Sophie Duarte, but her compatriot came through for a
:16:56. > :17:08.surprise bronze medal. The biggest danger was always going
:17:09. > :17:14.to be this young lady, Clemence Calvin. She ran a personal best at
:17:15. > :17:18.5000 metres. She won the European Cup for 10,000 metres earlier in the
:17:19. > :17:26.year and conducted herself very well. A silver medal for her, a very
:17:27. > :17:32.good reward. That is France's best ever result. They are delighted with
:17:33. > :17:39.it. A Frenchman said, we are delighted for this woman here. 40
:17:40. > :17:44.years of age, a mother of two, one of our best athletes of all time, an
:17:45. > :17:53.inspiration to so many in Britain and around the world, Jo Pavey. Her
:17:54. > :17:59.career began with the English schools titles in the 80s, a great
:18:00. > :18:03.1500 metre runner, she kept moving up, even dabbled with the marathon.
:18:04. > :18:08.Never on top of the rostrum through all those years, and now she is the
:18:09. > :18:31.European champion. Well done, Jo Pavey.
:18:32. > :19:11.A stormy night in Z?rich, celebrating a storming victory for
:19:12. > :19:17.Jo Pavey. If there is not a lump in your throat, you have no heart. She
:19:18. > :19:21.did not notice the wind and rain, she was so emotional. Fancy waiting
:19:22. > :19:26.until the end of her career, it has been a great career, she has bided
:19:27. > :19:31.her time, she has been competitive all the way through, and for British
:19:32. > :19:39.distance running, it is fantastic, what an inspiration for others, to
:19:40. > :19:41.take part and do watch it has done. She will never have a race like
:19:42. > :20:03.that. Jo Pavey with her gold medal, and
:20:04. > :20:06.when I spoke to her today, she was inundated with media requests, she
:20:07. > :20:13.was all over the papers this morning, radio, TV, and the press
:20:14. > :20:17.man said, would you mind doing an interview with a newspaper
:20:18. > :20:24.tomorrow? She said, as long as I can see the kids. She is a mum of two,
:20:25. > :20:28.her girl will be one next month, and this is the crowning glory of a team
:20:29. > :20:34.effort for the family. It is the icing on the cake. It is the balance
:20:35. > :20:38.and happiness in her personal life, which is translating into the fact
:20:39. > :20:43.that she is running so well and continuing to do so late in her
:20:44. > :20:49.career. She is hoping she can still keep going to Rio de Janeiro. She
:20:50. > :20:53.holds this form, she can, she is inside the qualifying time, she can
:20:54. > :20:57.go. Mo Farah with a quick lap of honour in this weather. You do not
:20:58. > :21:09.want to hang around too much tonight! Denise, his first job is
:21:10. > :21:19.done, the 5000 metre final will follow on Sunday. Absolutely. His
:21:20. > :21:23.daughter there. It is very sweet. He has had a tough time, but it was
:21:24. > :21:27.great to see his reaction at the end of the race, you saw how much this
:21:28. > :21:34.meant to him, and how much he needed it. It is the 100 metre women's
:21:35. > :21:38.final, and Andrew Cotter will talk us through the final.
:21:39. > :21:54.There are two British women. Can Ashleigh Nelson and Desiree Henry
:21:55. > :22:01.challenge the favourites? A wonderful final in prospect. Myriam
:22:02. > :22:05.Soumare, can she had the shorter sprint to her CV? She has said she
:22:06. > :22:21.is in the form of her life, she is flying. There will be even more of a
:22:22. > :22:30.buzz for Mujinga Kambundi. They are flying the flags for her. This
:22:31. > :22:38.athlete has a rare sprinting talent. The defending champion
:22:39. > :22:47.outside her in Lane 6, she won her feet and semifinal.
:22:48. > :22:58.The back of two wonderful performances in the heat and
:22:59. > :23:01.semifinal. One of those athletes who lit the flame inside the Olympic
:23:02. > :23:08.Stadium two years ago, Desiree Henry, nominated by Daley Thompson.
:23:09. > :23:26.She is here now, still shy of her 19th birthday, in a European final.
:23:27. > :23:32.The call, wet, blustery Z?rich night. They now settle for the final
:23:33. > :24:00.of the women's 100 metres. Dafne Schippers get their ahead of
:24:01. > :24:09.Myriam Soumare. Ashleigh Nelson get the bronze medal. Dafne Schippers
:24:10. > :24:13.does not know that she has the gold medal for the Netherlands. Ashleigh
:24:14. > :24:19.Nelson contending. A great run from her. Dafne Schippers, the result
:24:20. > :24:24.goes up on the board, she is the gold medallist. Myriam Soumare get
:24:25. > :24:32.the silver medal, and Ashleigh Nelson has a bronze medal. Just
:24:33. > :24:36.waiting for confirmation for Ashleigh Nelson, but Dafne
:24:37. > :24:43.Schippers, no doubt about it, through a bit of a storm inside the
:24:44. > :24:48.stadium. Ashleigh Nelson, it has been confirmed, she has the bronze
:24:49. > :24:56.medal in a European Championships. What a tremendous 100 metres, into a
:24:57. > :25:01.headwind, -1.7. You can take 0.1 seconds off each of those
:25:02. > :25:11.performances. If you can imagine how quickly Ashleigh Nelson has run,
:25:12. > :25:16.around 11.12, sensational sprinting. Outstanding sprinting for that young
:25:17. > :25:20.lady, from Holland. She did not have the best start, but she kept a cool
:25:21. > :25:24.head, and she started to work her way through the field. Myriam
:25:25. > :25:31.Soumare came into the race thinking she had a good chance, with her good
:25:32. > :25:35.qualification rounds, and another good semifinal performance. Dafne
:25:36. > :25:41.Schippers kept her head, she believed in herself, and I think,
:25:42. > :25:46.Andrew, she should consider binning the heptathlon and just focusing on
:25:47. > :25:53.the sprint. Difficult conditions for the sprinters, she is a powerful
:25:54. > :26:03.woman, but she came through well. You can imagine she concentrated on
:26:04. > :26:10.the sprint. If she could get that really going with excellent
:26:11. > :26:13.conditions. Back these conditions are appalling for sprinting, it is
:26:14. > :26:22.cold, raining, you are running into a headwind, and she still produces a
:26:23. > :26:29.time of 11.12. She is not an A1 sprinter, this is a play if and for
:26:30. > :26:36.her, because she did not fun to be heptathlon, and look at what she has
:26:37. > :26:42.done. This shows the all-round talent she has. But for now, the
:26:43. > :26:54.other events are put in the bin. She is sure each -- she is such a strong
:26:55. > :26:58.talent. She can go under 11 seconds. Once you know that and believe that,
:26:59. > :27:04.that gives you the dilemma, what do you do? Does she fancy taking on
:27:05. > :27:09.Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson? It is a big
:27:10. > :27:17.decision, but she is the sprinting queen so far. You saw Ashleigh
:27:18. > :27:20.Nelson, it was fairly close between third and fourth, she knew she had
:27:21. > :27:28.the bronze medal. They're wonderful run that was, behind Daphne
:27:29. > :27:46.Schippers and Myriam Soumare. The Dutch champion confirmed.
:27:47. > :27:52.The middle for Ashleigh Nelson was Great Britain's first 100 metre
:27:53. > :28:02.medal at the European Championships since 1974.
:28:03. > :28:09.The first sprint medal for a British woman for 40 years. It is something,
:28:10. > :28:14.and it puts into context, we have been saying all season, British
:28:15. > :28:20.sprinting is in a rich vein of form at the moment, and sometimes you
:28:21. > :28:23.think, are we judging it against the white barometers? But you cannot
:28:24. > :28:34.deny that, and it shows the talent is coming through -- the right from
:28:35. > :28:40.it is? We thought Ashley -- Ashleigh Nelson could get there. She looked
:28:41. > :28:49.amazing. She has improved round by round, her attitude has been great.
:28:50. > :28:57.The emotion is clear to see, age in this performance, congratulations.
:28:58. > :29:03.It is going to be difficult, the raw emotion. I have got to say a big
:29:04. > :29:10.thank you to my coach, my medical team, they have been looking after
:29:11. > :29:15.me. It is all funded by the national lottery, so a big thank you to them.
:29:16. > :29:22.The last few years have been managing injuries, and it has been a
:29:23. > :29:28.tough time. I came here in 2012 and missed the final. This year, I
:29:29. > :29:32.wanted to come back and make sure I was in the final, occurs when you
:29:33. > :29:39.are in the final, you never know what can happen. We saw what
:29:40. > :29:44.happened. Yes, my coach said, I have got to get out and the rest will
:29:45. > :29:46.take care of itself. I feel like I did that.
:29:47. > :29:49.got to get out and the rest will take care of itself. I feel That was
:29:50. > :29:57.not my best race. I am not complaining about that at all! I am
:29:58. > :30:02.so grateful and thankful. You are draped in the flag, I remember
:30:03. > :30:09.meeting you as a 14-year-old, and here you are with a medal. It has
:30:10. > :30:14.taken a lot of persistence and belief from the people around me as
:30:15. > :30:20.well as myself. I cannot say thank you enough to my support team,
:30:21. > :30:26.Chris, Michael, my psychologist, everybody, my parents, my friends.
:30:27. > :30:30.Enjoy the moment, you deserve it, you will have the magical moment on
:30:31. > :30:47.the podium to come as well. Thank you, everybody.
:30:48. > :30:58.Steve Cram: It is lovely to see an athlete like that. The rain has just
:30:59. > :31:03.abated for the time being as we approach the 800 metres semifinals.
:31:04. > :31:07.That is Mark English. The 21-year-old from Ireland. We will
:31:08. > :31:12.see him just did a second because he is in the lane outside the French
:31:13. > :31:15.athlete. This young man is having a brilliant season.
:31:16. > :31:19.athlete. This young man is having a brilliant Second to David Rudisha in
:31:20. > :31:26.the New York Diamond league. He is a medical student from Dublin. Andreas
:31:27. > :31:30.Bube, who has a happy knack of getting through the rounds, even
:31:31. > :31:51.when you do not think he is in the greatest of form. Poland are blessed
:31:52. > :31:58.with 800 metres talent. Watch out for the Swedish 19-year-old, wearing
:31:59. > :32:05.yellow. He has just come back from the championships where he picked up
:32:06. > :32:16.a bronze medal. New names. Mark English with a big opportunity. The
:32:17. > :32:21.only thing about Bosse, sometimes he looks lost in tactical races. But he
:32:22. > :32:28.has gone up on the shoulder of the leader, Brendan. Mark English, I
:32:29. > :32:34.bumped into his parents and sisters in the hotel at lunch time. They
:32:35. > :32:37.were four nervous people. I said I thought he had a chance of getting
:32:38. > :32:45.through to the final and doing better than that. They said, don't
:32:46. > :32:51.say that! 51.5 as they go through the bowel. The acceleration Mark
:32:52. > :33:00.English has puts him in goods -- good stead. Bosse, he is in the
:33:01. > :33:13.right position. He has a good finish and tremendous acceleration. Bosse,
:33:14. > :33:17.he is there to be shot. -- shot at. The first three will go through and
:33:18. > :33:32.the two fastest losers. This will be pretty quick. Mark English needs to
:33:33. > :33:38.be careful. He has got to be strong. Only the top three go through. He is
:33:39. > :33:44.just going to be run out of it. Andreas Bube came through for the
:33:45. > :33:55.third spot. He did not do anything wrong. He was in the right position.
:33:56. > :34:01.He ran out of legs a little bit. He is still 21. He parted with his
:34:02. > :34:10.coach earlier in the year. He did not just quite have the legs,
:34:11. > :34:15.Brendan. Bosse, he was running powerfully, as we have seen him do.
:34:16. > :34:24.Very sadly, Mark English was run out of it. Kuciapski, of Poland,
:34:25. > :34:28.crossing the line. I thought Mark English was impressive yesterday. I
:34:29. > :34:32.thought he ran the race as he could. Whether the questions were asked, he
:34:33. > :34:40.did not have the answers in the finishing straight. Kuciapski, there
:34:41. > :34:46.are two Polish athletes in the next round as well. They could be well
:34:47. > :34:55.represented. STUDIO: There is just time to hear from the latest gold
:34:56. > :35:01.winner. Mo Farah. It has not been the best season so far for him on
:35:02. > :35:03.the track. The victory was a relatively easy win. We can hear
:35:04. > :35:14.what he has to say. Congratulations, we saw your
:35:15. > :35:22.reaction as you cross the line. This meant a lot to me. Two weeks ago, it
:35:23. > :35:27.was a doubt I would compete here. The last two weeks, the training has
:35:28. > :35:35.gone well. It meant a lot to me. It was not easy. I wanted to run the
:35:36. > :35:41.Commonwealth Games and could not. And winning the European, it meant a
:35:42. > :35:45.lot to me. With that, people might doubt you, and the frustration no
:35:46. > :35:52.doubt came out at the end. You did not like that aspect of it? I did
:35:53. > :35:56.not want to let people down. People who had bought tickets, I let them
:35:57. > :36:00.down in a way because I said I would be there, but unfortunately I could
:36:01. > :36:07.not be there because I was nowhere near in terms of my shape, and I was
:36:08. > :36:11.not 100%. I felt I let people down and sometimes it is harder. People
:36:12. > :36:19.support and want to come and see you. That is what I felt. You have
:36:20. > :36:25.your gold medal. After the year you have had, you have been in hospital,
:36:26. > :36:28.you have the marathon experience, collapsing in New York. You now have
:36:29. > :36:36.this bright moment in a troubled year. Definitely. This means a lot
:36:37. > :36:42.to me. It has not been easy. But it means a lot. This is where the
:36:43. > :36:47.journey began, the European double in 2010 in Barcelona. It set you on
:36:48. > :36:53.the journey to the Olympics, wild gold medals and superstardom. In
:36:54. > :36:58.Barcelona, winning the double and in Helsinki winning the 5000 metres.
:36:59. > :37:01.The Europeans and from there having the confidence and going to the
:37:02. > :37:06.World Championships and winning and going from there to the Olympics, it
:37:07. > :37:12.has been a long journey. You cannot forget where you started from. The
:37:13. > :37:16.job is not done, you have to come back for the 5000 metres. I am
:37:17. > :37:23.really looking forward to it. I want to thank people who have supported
:37:24. > :37:27.me. Particularly my family, my wife, my family have been there for
:37:28. > :37:35.me, going through all the different emotions. It is great to have a lot
:37:36. > :37:41.of people behind me. I am grateful to have people behind me in terms of
:37:42. > :37:47.my coach, Alberto, and my team-mates and the rest of the guys. They have
:37:48. > :37:54.been very supportive. It is a team effort and you have done and router
:37:55. > :38:01.night. For all the people, my charity, 20th of August. The tickets
:38:02. > :38:09.are out there and you can get online and the website, the Mo Farah
:38:10. > :38:13.foundation. All the best. STUDIO: There is another global superstar in
:38:14. > :38:19.the house. Usain Bolt is enjoying the athletics here. He has come to
:38:20. > :38:27.watch the men's 100 metres final, which will come up in the next half
:38:28. > :38:32.an hour or so we understand. The schedule has been affected by the
:38:33. > :38:37.storm like conditions. Usain Bolt does not like the dodgy weather. He
:38:38. > :38:40.has come here figured athletics. We will see the next men's 800 metres
:38:41. > :38:50.semifinal. Andrew Cotter. They are having to wait at the
:38:51. > :39:01.moment. Marcin Lewandowski, we talked about the strong Polish
:39:02. > :39:08.contingent. These are the results of the previous heat. Mark English will
:39:09. > :39:15.have to wait to see if his time is quick enough. Usain Bolt is leaving
:39:16. > :39:21.us now. Rose petals are being scattered in front of him. He will
:39:22. > :39:28.be back for more athletics on the BBC later this month. And we can
:39:29. > :39:40.have the second 800 metres second semifinal. A strong Polish
:39:41. > :39:41.contingent. But France also have Bosse and also the athlete in lane
:39:42. > :39:55.eight. The first three will go through
:39:56. > :39:59.automatically. The two fastest losers, also. Mark English is in one
:40:00. > :40:12.of those fastest loser positions at the moment. Amel Tuka, I was trying
:40:13. > :40:20.to read what it said on his hands. Dennis Kruger, the German champion.
:40:21. > :40:28.Sofiane Selmouni. Third in the French championships. No disgrace
:40:29. > :40:36.behind Bosse. Fourth in the last two World Championship finals. Marcin
:40:37. > :40:43.Lewandowski. An athlete of tremendous calibre, as is Adam
:40:44. > :40:49.Kszczot. World indoor bronze-medallist four years ago. And
:40:50. > :40:52.also bronze in the European Championships four years ago. Johan
:40:53. > :40:59.Rogestedt is a former youth champion over this distance. Still only 21.
:41:00. > :41:06.And in lane eight, the third of the Frenchman, Paul Renaudie.
:41:07. > :41:16.The first semifinal was quick enough. Mark English will be
:41:17. > :41:21.watching keenly with his time. In pole position at the moment of the
:41:22. > :41:28.fastest losers. It is three who go through automatically. The Polish
:41:29. > :41:34.athletes running alongside each other with T-shirts under their
:41:35. > :41:46.vests to keep warm. The rainbow has abated. Dennis Kruger takes them out
:41:47. > :41:54.at a decent pace. The Polish athletes settling in behind Sofiane
:41:55. > :42:08.Selmouni. They realise that was just over 26 seconds for the first 200
:42:09. > :42:17.metres, which is quick. Kszczot, and Marcin Lewandowski comfortable in
:42:18. > :42:24.these positions. Dennis Kruger just doing the business. 53. Slow in the
:42:25. > :42:36.second 200 metres. That was not quick enough. That was a silly way
:42:37. > :42:40.to do it. On the outside, Marcin Lewandowski, putting himself in the
:42:41. > :42:48.right position to attack. Dennis Kruger trying to hold his line. But
:42:49. > :42:54.the Polish athletes, they creep around. Marcin Lewandowski, out in
:42:55. > :42:59.front. Adam Kszczot tucking in behind. Also running nicely is Amel
:43:00. > :43:04.Tuka. He is in third place at the moment. Dennis Kruger trying to hang
:43:05. > :43:16.on to fourth. The French man is finishing strongly. Amel Tuka comes
:43:17. > :43:24.through. Paul Renaudie run out of it at the moment. It is good news for
:43:25. > :43:31.Mark English. That is very good news. The two Polish athletes
:43:32. > :43:37.qualify comfortably. The first lap, this is the last 200 metres. The two
:43:38. > :43:45.Polish athletes just running fast enough. Adam Kszczot settling.
:43:46. > :43:52.Marcin Lewandowski leading. The first lap was slow. After a very
:43:53. > :43:58.quick opening 200 metres. Mark English, the Irish man, he did not
:43:59. > :44:04.run great, but he will be delighted when he sees that. The two Polish
:44:05. > :44:15.athletes comfortably through and Amel Tuka. Bosse, he will start as
:44:16. > :44:18.the favourite. The two Polish athletes, they were comfortable,
:44:19. > :44:29.looking round, knowing they will go through.
:44:30. > :44:40.STUDIO: We have not had time yet this evening to remind you that the
:44:41. > :44:50.mascot and company are in town. They are getting well used. Ashleigh
:44:51. > :44:58.Nelson's fantastic bronze medal. The first sprint medal rewarding Great
:44:59. > :45:08.Britain in 40 years. Silver, Andy Vernon. And a gold medal to join Jo
:45:09. > :45:12.Pavey's gold, Mo Farah. I will pick up Ashleigh Nelson from the floor in
:45:13. > :45:20.a moment! We can hear from Andy Vernon, talking to Phil Jones after
:45:21. > :45:25.the race. Many congratulations on a tremendous performance. A silver
:45:26. > :45:33.medal. Thank you. When you come to the races you are not sure, it is a
:45:34. > :45:38.lottery, because you do not run 10,000 metres that much. You go on
:45:39. > :45:42.the idea of what people have run in this season but you do not know
:45:43. > :45:46.where you are going to go and you have to keep your fingers crossed
:45:47. > :45:53.and hopefully you come out on top. I was not quite on top today, but I
:45:54. > :45:57.came out second. You had a difficult time, the hamstring problem, you
:45:58. > :46:05.have regrouped and come back. That is another thing, you just do not
:46:06. > :46:10.know what will happen. I thought I might fall apart because the
:46:11. > :46:18.endurance is not there. I dug deep from 3000 metres out. We broke into
:46:19. > :46:25.a group of six or seven. I managed to beat all but one of those guys.
:46:26. > :46:31.What does this mean to you, those months and years of hard work? It is
:46:32. > :46:38.a lot, it is months and years of dedication. I cannot say I do not
:46:39. > :46:41.love it, it is a great job, but you have got to get up on those cold
:46:42. > :46:49.January morning is when it is raining, it is 2 degrees outside,
:46:50. > :46:55.and to your session. It takes a lot of motivation to do that day in, day
:46:56. > :46:59.out. There are times when it pays off, it is brilliant.
:47:00. > :47:06.He will be over the moon. It has not been the best preparation for him,
:47:07. > :47:13.he has not been where he wanted to be. We will go back, a lap and a
:47:14. > :47:18.half out, it looked like he would settle for a bronze medal, then it
:47:19. > :47:24.looked like he had another gear. Exactly, I am really happy for him,
:47:25. > :47:30.but I am a bit cross as well. This is his second European medal, and he
:47:31. > :47:38.ran that face and left it really late again, and realised at the last
:47:39. > :47:43.minute he was in with a chance. The same thing that we will say here. He
:47:44. > :47:48.struggled and worried he would not have the endurance to stay in
:47:49. > :47:52.contention. He was lucky the pace was not super hot, but it was still
:47:53. > :47:57.reasonable. He needed to hang in there. As he gets into the last
:47:58. > :48:03.lap, he realises he is so close to the medals. He is digging as deep as
:48:04. > :48:07.he can, gritting his teeth and remembering the work he has done and
:48:08. > :48:11.the struggles he had through the injuries. He can see Mo Farah
:48:12. > :48:18.controlling the race from the front, and thinking, I will go for third
:48:19. > :48:26.place. I am not sure how strong the wind was, but a bit further on, you
:48:27. > :48:33.can see him checking to see if he was safe in third place, and to make
:48:34. > :48:46.sure he was clear to move out, to grab the silver medal. With respect
:48:47. > :48:49.to his natural physiology, I am sure he is a slight man, but he looks a
:48:50. > :48:53.lot bigger and stronger than the guys he is running next to. Almost
:48:54. > :48:58.more like he would be running down the distances. I know what you are
:48:59. > :49:05.talking about, because Mo Farah is so slight. Andy has a bigger chest,
:49:06. > :49:11.he looks bigger, but the way that he runs also makes him seem bigger. He
:49:12. > :49:15.is still built like a distance runner, but he has the power there.
:49:16. > :49:20.That is what stands him in good stead. He has the strength and
:49:21. > :49:29.resilience and power in his legs, it is probably what helped him, when he
:49:30. > :49:33.was missing a bit of endurance. He has a good marathon career ahead of
:49:34. > :49:41.him whenever he wants to move up. Will that be after the Olympics? It
:49:42. > :49:46.is his decision! I think it would maybe be afterwards, he will
:49:47. > :49:50.probably want to attack the half marathon, and then move through. The
:49:51. > :49:56.man who got the gold medal is not shy of it. A double in London and at
:49:57. > :50:02.the World Championships. When you add tonight to what is already an
:50:03. > :50:05.impressive list, he is becoming one of the most decorated athletes of
:50:06. > :50:11.all time, never mind British athletes. But lately. When you
:50:12. > :50:16.appreciate how difficult the doubles are, especially at World
:50:17. > :50:25.Championship and Olympic level, when you have to put in the heats for the
:50:26. > :50:29.5000 metres, it puts it into perspective when he said he wanted
:50:30. > :50:35.to get out there and this meant a lot to him. The roll of honour
:50:36. > :50:44.started at the European Championships. It has been a year of
:50:45. > :50:51.turmoil for him. Asking how good he will be at the marathon, and whether
:50:52. > :50:54.he would be at the Commonwealth, but then controlling the race here, he
:50:55. > :51:00.did control that, everybody else was looking to see what he would do. We
:51:01. > :51:07.will see a similar thing with the 5000 metres. Let's hope that we seek
:51:08. > :51:13.Tiffany Porter being comfortable as well, because she is going in the
:51:14. > :51:14.100 hurdles shortly. But first, it is the medal ceremony for the men's
:51:15. > :51:27.10,000 metres. A long journey for both men,
:51:28. > :51:34.contrasting journeys, Mo Farah is full of glitter and glory, and for
:51:35. > :51:40.Andy Vernon, a more workmanlike journey, finding himself on a
:51:41. > :51:45.rostrum finally. He will be relishing this moment, as will Mo
:51:46. > :51:56.Farah, in a different way. It was not quite as easy as most might have
:51:57. > :52:09.predicted. The last lap was enough. But he had to work hard for it. The
:52:10. > :52:13.man presenting the medal is a Swiss. He won a silver medal at these
:52:14. > :52:18.championships a good few years ago now. He ran many good races, I
:52:19. > :52:28.watched him run here in this stadium at 5000 metres. Giving the medal to
:52:29. > :52:34.this man, Ali Kaya, 20 years of age, a personal best, maybe he does have
:52:35. > :52:37.a future at 10,000 metres. He had a little bit at the end, but not
:52:38. > :52:45.enough to hold off the British athletes. Andy Vernon, that will be
:52:46. > :52:46.a great site for many runners back home, club runners, cross country
:52:47. > :52:58.runners. That will be an inspiration, the
:52:59. > :53:12.same way that Jo Pavey was, in some respects. Looking at his medal. A
:53:13. > :53:20.gold medal again for Mo Farah. He has four European gold medals. I am
:53:21. > :53:27.loving the Swiss jumping up on the podium, that might set a trend!
:53:28. > :53:36.Hopefully, Mo Farah will recover well. He joins a list of people who
:53:37. > :53:46.have won this title on more than one occasion.
:53:47. > :54:42.A familiar moment for Mo Farah. It is the first time Andy Vernon has
:54:43. > :54:48.stood on the rostrum at a major track Championships. A British 1-2,
:54:49. > :54:53.as it was in 2010. Mo Farah was joined by Chris Thomson then, now it
:54:54. > :54:59.is Andy Vernon. We look forward to the 5000 metres later in the week.
:55:00. > :55:06.It has been a good Championships so far for Great Britain, a great
:55:07. > :55:11.moment for Andy Vernon, stood next to Mo Farah. Hearing the national
:55:12. > :55:18.anthem, and will we hear it again for Tiffany Porter in the 100 meter
:55:19. > :55:26.hurdles? She is a bronze medallist from Moscow, a sulphur medallist
:55:27. > :55:30.from the Commonwealth Games, but beaten from athlete outside the
:55:31. > :55:35.European Community. She is here as the fastest qualifier, she will feel
:55:36. > :55:42.this is hers, Denise. She would love to, but those ten barriers are so
:55:43. > :55:46.important, she has got to be tidy. It is a big chance for her to add a
:55:47. > :55:53.gold medal to her collection of silver medals, and the world bronze
:55:54. > :55:59.medal from Moscow. A big moment for her. Let's go to Andrew Cotter for
:56:00. > :56:10.the women's 100 meter hurdles final. She is the favourite, but Cindy
:56:11. > :56:16.Billaud, if there is any filtering -- faltering from Tiffany Porter,
:56:17. > :56:20.there are plenty who will pounce. Sometimes you have to be the
:56:21. > :56:25.favourite and deliver. The hurdlers will be affected more than most, but
:56:26. > :56:33.the wind seems to have eased, the rain has stopped now. Tiffany Porter
:56:34. > :56:44.has been consistently quick so far, 12.60 nine,. Cindy Roleder might be
:56:45. > :56:49.a threat. Any of these athletes. Anne Zagre has been running strongly
:56:50. > :56:52.so far as well. Tiffany Porter start of the favourite. So much can happen
:56:53. > :57:24.in the hurdles. That is good entertainment, he was
:57:25. > :57:28.hurdling very well again! Anyway... Tiffany Porter ignoring all of that,
:57:29. > :57:34.at the athletes have to do, because this is the European final. Eline
:57:35. > :57:39.Berings is the former indoor champion. Nadine Hildebrand was in
:57:40. > :57:52.seventh place at the world indoor Championships. Anne Zagre is the
:57:53. > :57:56.Belgian record-holder. Cindy Billaud has run faster than Tiffany Porter
:57:57. > :58:01.this season, but she has not quite found the speed here. 0.1 down in
:58:02. > :58:09.the first round and in the semifinal, behind this woman. Is
:58:10. > :58:17.there finally to be a gold medal for Tiffany Porter? Cindy still
:58:18. > :58:29.competing in the this season, I wonder if she can replicate Dafne
:58:30. > :58:36.Schippers. Rosina Hodde, a big achievement for her to reach the
:58:37. > :58:40.final, 31 now. And the world indoor bronze medallist from a couple of
:58:41. > :59:01.years ago, Alena Tamkova complete the line-up.
:59:02. > :59:08.It might be a battle between Tiffany Porter and Cindy Billaud. The final
:59:09. > :59:36.of the women's 100 metres hurdles. The gold medal, just ahead of Cindy
:59:37. > :59:41.Billaud! Cindy Roleder might have got the bronze medal, that it is
:59:42. > :59:55.gold at last for Tiffany Porter. She is the European champion. She will
:59:56. > :00:02.be very emotional about this. The race was won from the go. She was
:00:03. > :00:08.aggressive from the start. Over the first hurdle, where she is strong.
:00:09. > :00:14.Exactly the same place where Cindy Roleder let is strong. There is the
:00:15. > :00:23.winner. Another British success. Tiffany Porter. Congratulations, you
:00:24. > :00:29.are European champion. A night success with athletes being draped
:00:30. > :00:33.in the flag. Tiffany Porter, a gold medal winner. We spoke about her
:00:34. > :00:39.World Championships, indoors and out, with bronze and silver. But
:00:40. > :00:45.finally gold. She had to work hard. Just a fraction down on her times in
:00:46. > :00:49.the first round and semifinal. Conditions were not great. Worked
:00:50. > :00:59.really hard to hold off Cindy Billaud. We hope to Tiffany would
:01:00. > :01:03.just have enough to deliver a successful race and she has managed
:01:04. > :01:06.to do that. The most important was to get to the first hurdle as
:01:07. > :01:12.quickly as she can and as efficiently as she could.
:01:13. > :01:17.Technically it was not her best race. But she was aggressive all the
:01:18. > :01:22.way through the field. She is one of the best competitors I know. She
:01:23. > :01:31.managed to haul herself through and win the title. From this angle, she
:01:32. > :01:36.knows she is strong, she knows none of the field will get back to her as
:01:37. > :01:42.long as she does not make mistakes. It is crucial, as she stayed nice
:01:43. > :01:48.and tall and believed in herself. She lost the hurdle height, coming
:01:49. > :01:53.off the last barrier. That was why there was again by the others. It
:01:54. > :01:58.looked like a rush of momentum. But she had already done enough to take
:01:59. > :02:04.the title. Working hard into the barriers, using all the force she
:02:05. > :02:09.had to push her onto the next one. You are hanging on in there, not
:02:10. > :02:13.trying to get any more speed. Now thinking about technical endurance.
:02:14. > :02:19.The winter nights when you work on technique, it is about now it pays
:02:20. > :02:23.off. She sinks a little bit there. Goes off to the side and the rest of
:02:24. > :02:29.the field gave a couple of inches, but it was never going to be enough.
:02:30. > :02:39.Tiffany Porter, well done. It was a great race. Cindy Billaud, dipping
:02:40. > :02:45.for the line. Tears of joy, for the silver medal, rather than losing the
:02:46. > :02:49.gold. She was always up against it. Through the rounds, Tiffany Porter
:02:50. > :02:54.has looked impressive. She has her reward in a gold medal. She is the
:02:55. > :03:05.European champion. It was just a slight wind. Cindy Roleder taking
:03:06. > :03:11.the bronze medal for Germany. STUDIO: What a night we are having.
:03:12. > :03:14.Tiffany Porter the latest athlete from Great Britain who will hear the
:03:15. > :03:21.national anthem after a storming victory. Cindy Billaud, her rival,
:03:22. > :03:27.from France, it is shock. She came into this thinking she was the girl
:03:28. > :03:32.to beat. I cannot work out if they are tears of joy, or tears of
:03:33. > :03:36.sadness. She will probably be a little disappointed, because she
:03:37. > :03:42.lost the race from the first step. Tiffany was electric out of the
:03:43. > :03:48.blocks. I am delighted for her. You know what I have to do. Ring the
:03:49. > :03:53.bell, annoying neighbours from other countries in Studios on either side!
:03:54. > :03:58.And we will get the face of Tiffany Porter and add it to the gold medals
:03:59. > :04:03.in Mo Farah and Jo Pavey. Congratulations to her, and she is
:04:04. > :04:06.outside, celebrating, signing autographs, enjoying her lap of
:04:07. > :04:12.honour and cementing her progress over the last few seasons.
:04:13. > :04:17.Collecting medals is what this game is about. The gold medal is what she
:04:18. > :04:20.really wanted. She had improved through the rounds in this
:04:21. > :04:26.Championships and it is fitting she is ending with a gold medal. A vast
:04:27. > :04:35.improvement and confidence from Tiffany. It was hers, she knew that,
:04:36. > :04:39.if she could keep it tidy. We have been talking, Paula, about the
:04:40. > :04:44.priority. Is it the Commonwealth Games, the European Championships?
:04:45. > :04:48.When you put it in the wider context of the Olympics and World
:04:49. > :04:52.Championships, they are all important in gaining experience. Mo
:04:53. > :04:59.Farah said his first major medal was at the Europeans. And this stands
:05:00. > :05:04.you in great stead. Something like the European Championships can be
:05:05. > :05:07.used as a stepping stone for junior athletes coming through, or for
:05:08. > :05:12.established senior athletes like Jo Pavey, who are coming back and want
:05:13. > :05:19.to get the title and get the gold medal. It depends on how it fits
:05:20. > :05:25.into this season. With the European Championships, every two years, does
:05:26. > :05:29.it weaken it a little bit? When it was every four years it fitted into
:05:30. > :05:33.the cycle well. Now you have to choose between the European and the
:05:34. > :05:39.Olympics. We can go back to the track. The decathlon athletes have
:05:40. > :05:43.had to contend with ten events, Andrew Cotter, but also the storms
:05:44. > :05:48.and rain. It has disrupted their day-to-day.
:05:49. > :05:59.The pole vaults was a morning and evening session. These are these
:06:00. > :06:03.standings. Andrei Krauchanka, I am not sure he will be caught. He has
:06:04. > :06:11.not been running well over the decathlon, but he has too big a
:06:12. > :06:17.lead. That many points, it equates to 120 metres. It looks like he has
:06:18. > :06:23.run away with gold. And the Germans were pushed down into minor places.
:06:24. > :06:31.The pole vaults was disrupted by the strong wind we experienced this
:06:32. > :06:36.afternoon. It was a farce at times. Abele was going so strongly will
:06:37. > :06:44.stop getting personal bests left right and centre, but he has slipped
:06:45. > :06:48.away. He was disrupted. That was during the pole vaults, he managed
:06:49. > :06:53.to complete it during the winter. The event was stopped and six
:06:54. > :06:58.athletes got to benefit by coming back when the wind had dropped. The
:06:59. > :07:03.event leader was one of them, Andrei Krauchanka. He goes into this race
:07:04. > :07:10.almost certain of a gold medal. Away they go. You might expect a couple
:07:11. > :07:20.of heats, and it was going to be that way, but they are trying to get
:07:21. > :07:30.back on schedule. Andrei Krauchanka is out in front. Shkurenyov, the
:07:31. > :07:38.Russians, is in second place. Rico Freimuth, personal best times are
:07:39. > :07:50.what you are looking for in the 1500 metres, and he is 25 points behind
:07:51. > :08:05.Kai Kazmirek, who is a decent 1500 metres runner. The athlete who
:08:06. > :08:10.pulled out, he mentioned his fatigued. He has withdrawn. It has
:08:11. > :08:14.been a good seasons in the British athletes. Medals in the Commonwealth
:08:15. > :08:20.Games. But it was not meant to be at the European Championships. 1500
:08:21. > :08:24.metres hurt some of these big athletes more than any of the other
:08:25. > :08:28.ten events. We are used to seeing Daley Thompson bouncing around and
:08:29. > :08:34.it looked like he was comfortable, but he used to say how much it
:08:35. > :08:39.hurts. The three French athletes out in front. Kevin Maher, in sixth
:08:40. > :08:45.place overall, I wonder if his compatriots are helping to pace him
:08:46. > :08:50.along to a decent finish. Sintnicolaas is in fifth place after
:08:51. > :08:55.a very good pole vaults, which we expected. Andrei Krauchanka, the
:08:56. > :09:01.leader at the moment. As long as he does not lose too much ground, he
:09:02. > :09:06.should be fine for the gold medal. The French ban in third place had a
:09:07. > :09:12.very good pole vaults. The pole vault of the afternoon was
:09:13. > :09:21.Sintnicolaas of the Netherlands, in sixth place there. He jogged five
:09:22. > :09:26.metres and 40 centimetres -- jumped. It was a turnaround in that
:09:27. > :09:30.competition, the disrupted pole vault competition. Andrei Krauchanka
:09:31. > :09:39.got on with his work and jumped five metres ten. It was his two metres
:09:40. > :09:46.and 22 in the high jump yesterday that set him to what looks like
:09:47. > :09:52.being a gold medal. He got off to a slow start in his hundred metres. He
:09:53. > :09:58.looks comfortable here. In the 400 metres he was over 50 seconds. He
:09:59. > :10:06.lost ground in the 400 metres. He has laboured in the running events.
:10:07. > :10:11.His legs are looking heavy already. He is hurting. He is running
:10:12. > :10:17.unevenly. We have almost put the gold medal around his neck. 140
:10:18. > :10:31.points ahead, but he is limping and dropping away. It might be the
:10:32. > :10:38.German athlete who is one of the men who might catch him, Abele. Andrei
:10:39. > :10:46.Krauchanka is struggling. You can see the tape on his legs. This is
:10:47. > :11:08.the battle. Kevin Maher, -- Kevin Meyer. Roddy quickly, the other
:11:09. > :11:14.French man. Abele is chasing down Mayer. Abele was so strong on the
:11:15. > :11:26.Thursday. This is a long way back to Andrei Krauchanka. That is a strong
:11:27. > :11:32.finish from Abele. We will have to do the arithmetic and countless
:11:33. > :11:39.seconds. Mayer, he comes through. Andrei Krauchanka coming through
:11:40. > :11:47.now. Still 30 metres to go. That is a man in pain. It might still be the
:11:48. > :11:53.gold medal that awaits them. The man in second place behind him was the
:11:54. > :11:59.Russian, Shkurenyov. Kai Kazmirek also. That was hard work. It was
:12:00. > :12:05.horrible to watch. The athletes are scattered across the track. They
:12:06. > :12:12.really do not enjoy the 1500 metres. The decathlon is generally a power
:12:13. > :12:16.sport. Nine power events. The 1500 metres goes against the grain. They
:12:17. > :12:26.are like a bunch of salmon lying on the bank. You have been fighting for
:12:27. > :12:31.half an hour. I have to say, Abele came across the line in what looked
:12:32. > :12:38.like four minutes and 20 seconds. The event leader, Andrei Krauchanka,
:12:39. > :12:43.four minutes 40 seconds. That was the 22nd deficit we talked about him
:12:44. > :12:49.needing to cut down. That was ahead of Sintnicolaas. It looks as though
:12:50. > :12:54.the gold will go to Andrei Krauchanka. We will wait for
:12:55. > :13:02.confirmation. Eventually they will get to their feet and join hands and
:13:03. > :13:07.waved to the crowd as the decathletes do. He was struggling
:13:08. > :13:12.throughout. He struggled in the 100 metres and 400. He certainly
:13:13. > :13:23.struggled here. I think the French athlete, Mayer, has moved into
:13:24. > :13:28.second place from six. His run, with Abele, in seventh place coming into
:13:29. > :13:33.the run, they dragged each other along. They are having a look and
:13:34. > :13:39.thinking. We will wait for the final calculations. I am pretty sure that
:13:40. > :13:44.Andrei Krauchanka has held on. Shkurenyov, the Russian, in a silver
:13:45. > :13:51.medal position coming into this, was somewhere down the field. Rico
:13:52. > :13:59.Freimuth, finishing a long way down the field and he will slip back. The
:14:00. > :14:11.calculations are being done. He is going for medical attention possibly
:14:12. > :14:17.a gold medal. All of these athletes living on the cusp of injury. It is
:14:18. > :14:27.an amazing event. They are all winners! There is your man right
:14:28. > :14:35.now. We are almost certain he has won this competition. It is going to
:14:36. > :14:42.be close. Almost a sprint finish. Very good in the closing
:14:43. > :14:48.disciplines. We can look at the results for the 1500 metres. Ga?l
:14:49. > :14:59.Querin a long way in front, but he was way out in the standings. Abele
:15:00. > :15:08.got a decent time. Shkurenyov, in the silver medal position coming
:15:09. > :15:13.into this, down in 10th place. I wonder if he has slipped out of the
:15:14. > :15:22.silver medal position. We can hear the cheering because they are seeing
:15:23. > :15:32.the overall results. Andre Crouch anchor has remained in the gold
:15:33. > :15:37.medal position. The great run from Kevin Meyer has taken him up to the
:15:38. > :15:39.silver medal position, and Iliescu rank of goes down to the bronze
:15:40. > :15:57.medal. We have almost caught up with
:15:58. > :16:02.ourselves, but because of the delay getting the programme going tonight,
:16:03. > :16:10.with the stormy conditions, we will go on here until 9:30pm. If you have
:16:11. > :16:20.tuned in for the programme at 9pm, it will follow at 9:30pm. Keeping
:16:21. > :16:24.the military analogy going, they say that the decathlete of the nights of
:16:25. > :16:28.athletics, but we have seen them finish their crusade, now it is time
:16:29. > :16:35.for the fastest men in this competition to perform, the 100
:16:36. > :16:39.meter men's final, and Great Britain have three chances to get a medal,
:16:40. > :16:41.Denise. If you had to pin your badge on any of the athletes, which order
:16:42. > :16:57.will they come in? James Dasaolu has the pedigree, can
:16:58. > :17:01.he pull it out tonight? But you never know, you cannot write off
:17:02. > :17:09.Dwain Chambers, and this is going to be very close between all of them.
:17:10. > :17:16.Christophe Lemaitre is the defending champion, with Jimmy Vicault out
:17:17. > :17:22.with an injury. He will not want to lose his crown. French hopes are
:17:23. > :17:28.riding on him, they have not had a gold medal here. We have three of
:17:29. > :17:32.them! They have had other medals, but they have not won a gold medal.
:17:33. > :17:41.We would like to see another British one, please. We have got three shots
:17:42. > :17:46.at it. Let's get down there and enjoy this, the weather is as calm
:17:47. > :17:51.as it has been all evening, Steve Cram, no rain and no wind up here.
:17:52. > :17:58.There has not been much wind in the commentary box all evening, or at
:17:59. > :18:06.least not from the weather. It has been calmer on the track than in the
:18:07. > :18:13.operational arms of the stadium and around. The stage is set, the last
:18:14. > :18:18.event of the evening, later than built, but worth staying up for.
:18:19. > :18:27.Three British athletes in this final.
:18:28. > :18:42.Because Lucas Jakubczyk just pipped Dwain Chambers, he gets the middle
:18:43. > :18:50.lane. It was a real surprise to see the Romain Ian in Lane 7. Will Dwain
:18:51. > :18:58.Chambers be able to run his own race away from everybody else? In 1998,
:18:59. > :19:07.Great Britain finished first and second, Darren Campbell is a couple
:19:08. > :19:10.of rows ahead of me, he and Dwain Chambers won the gold and silver
:19:11. > :19:18.medals. Dwain Chambers was just setting out in his career. 16 years
:19:19. > :19:24.ago. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey is yet to win a medal, after a brilliant
:19:25. > :19:29.youth and junior career. As a senior, he has not graced the podium
:19:30. > :19:36.yet. For James Dasaolu, and indoor silver medal in 2013 is all that he
:19:37. > :19:41.has two show for his undoubted talent. He is 26, he will not get
:19:42. > :19:51.too many chances over the years, a big one here. Josue Masai Ndure, a
:19:52. > :20:04.bronze medallist two years ago here. The Portuguese sprint champion.
:20:05. > :20:17.Second in the German Championships, but their best man here, Lucas Jacko
:20:18. > :20:24.check, Lucas. From the sudden and district but, the former world
:20:25. > :20:29.junior and world youth champion, can he win a medal as a senior at the
:20:30. > :20:37.European Championships? The defending champion, in Barcelona P1
:20:38. > :20:44.to 100, the 200 and V He says he wants to do the same here. The
:20:45. > :20:52.athlete from Rumania ran close to his personal best to make it here. A
:20:53. > :21:01.troubled career, and Dwain Chambers still chasing medals.
:21:02. > :21:12.Thank goodness Usain Bolt is not European. We would like him to be,
:21:13. > :21:17.but he is just a spectator tonight. The French team lost their big
:21:18. > :21:23.hope, Great Britain have three chances for a gold medal, and maybe
:21:24. > :21:27.more here. Christophe Lemaitre against Britain's best. The men's
:21:28. > :21:41.100 metre final. A twitch from Harry
:21:42. > :21:57.Aikines-Aryeetey. After all of this, after all of the
:21:58. > :22:04.waiting and building up, and here is your chance, he is your opportunity,
:22:05. > :22:08.what do you not to? A false start. You know what the situation could
:22:09. > :22:14.be. There could be a couple of them who reacted before the go. I saw the
:22:15. > :22:22.twitch from Harry, but the Portuguese is up and away. Harry
:22:23. > :22:35.made a movement almost 0.2 before the gun went. That is the evidence.
:22:36. > :22:45.The Portuguese has already gone. And we have got a yellow card for Lane
:22:46. > :22:48.5. Has he got away without? The Portuguese has not been
:22:49. > :22:59.disqualified, what is he doing? Did you see the red and black card? He
:23:00. > :23:06.has just decided, hang on, they did not disqualify me. He is adjusting
:23:07. > :23:10.himself. This will have a knock-on effect for all of the runners, they
:23:11. > :23:13.will not like this. There is a lot of activity going on. Let's hope our
:23:14. > :23:26.boys can stay calm. The men's 100 final. Away cleanly
:23:27. > :24:11.this time. It is James Dasaolu getting the gold
:24:12. > :24:16.medal. A European champion. Great Britain have a new sprint star, we
:24:17. > :24:21.knew about his talents and abilities, he has converted. James
:24:22. > :24:26.Dasaolu take the victory. Christophe Lemaitre DeSilva, and Harry
:24:27. > :24:34.Aikines-Aryeetey suddenly pipping Dwain Chambers for the bronze medal.
:24:35. > :24:38.James Dasaolu got out well. Christophe Lemaitre was chasing, but
:24:39. > :24:47.that is all he could do, because James Dasaolu was not giving that
:24:48. > :24:52.up. It is called, but he is going to feel warmed by that. Harry is
:24:53. > :25:01.jumping up and down, it has been given to him, the bronze medal. How
:25:02. > :25:05.much does that mean to him? We wondered, could James Dasaolu
:25:06. > :25:10.convert all of that talent and ability, and could Harry
:25:11. > :25:15.Aikines-Aryeetey get onto the rostrum? He has done it. I will get
:25:16. > :25:21.you to pick my lottery numbers, because you called it wonderfully
:25:22. > :25:27.well. James Dasaolu, with the floating action, moves ahead of the
:25:28. > :25:31.field, from 30 metres on. He does not panic about his start, he has
:25:32. > :25:36.got enough in the bag between 30 and 62 ease in front of the field, and
:25:37. > :25:44.he took the victory. The real battle was going on behind. The battle of
:25:45. > :25:52.the Brits for the bronze medal. Congratulations to Harry. A well
:25:53. > :25:56.fought bronze medal. Two lads celebrating their success.
:25:57. > :26:01.Christophe Lemaitre will be disappointed in his performance. He
:26:02. > :26:11.has got to keep working on his start. Out of the blocks, it is
:26:12. > :26:17.quite an even start, but now James gets into the beautiful running
:26:18. > :26:21.action that he has. Long strides, they ease him away from the field.
:26:22. > :26:29.Christophe Lemaitre cannot quite do it. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey looks at
:26:30. > :26:34.Dwain Chambers, if he had kept going, he might have made it easier
:26:35. > :26:39.for himself. Contrast the starts, because Christophe Lemaitre is a tad
:26:40. > :26:47.quicker than James Dasaolu's reaction. Do not be shocked by that.
:26:48. > :26:51.It is not about how fast you react. It is about how much power you put
:26:52. > :26:57.through the floor, that propels you across the track. James has got that
:26:58. > :27:03.lovely tap on the floor, which is powerful but light, so it eases him
:27:04. > :27:08.in front of the field. Do not get wrapped up with the reaction time.
:27:09. > :27:19.James has got it all today, a wonderful performance. 10.06, he is
:27:20. > :27:23.the European champion. From this angle, we might get an idea, the cos
:27:24. > :27:29.I thought Dwain Chambers had a medal. Harry was not going quite as
:27:30. > :27:34.well, Christophe Lemaitre came through strongly, but look at Dwain
:27:35. > :27:43.Chambers. He was working hard. He can just focus. Lane 8 was not going
:27:44. > :27:49.to be a problem for him. Harry was working hard all the way, he took
:27:50. > :27:52.based Nikki glanced to his right, because he knew he was in
:27:53. > :27:58.contention. He eventually got the medal. Look at Dwain Chambers,
:27:59. > :28:05.powerful, strong. Setting himself up beautifully. James eases himself,
:28:06. > :28:11.gliding across the track. There goes Christophe Lemaitre, and Harry
:28:12. > :28:18.having a nose to see where Dwain Chambers was. He will be happy
:28:19. > :28:23.anyway. The chest of Harry's has finally been put to some good use,
:28:24. > :28:27.leaning in front of Dwain Chambers. Well done for the bronze medal, but
:28:28. > :28:33.a brilliant gold medal for James Dasaolu. All of the questions about
:28:34. > :28:38.whether he could win a championship, it has been cold and wet, the warm
:28:39. > :28:39.up has been affected, he has come through with flying colours, red,
:28:40. > :28:54.white and blue. The result of the final. A gold
:28:55. > :29:05.medal for Great Britain. They solvent medal for France. -- a
:29:06. > :29:07.silver medal for France. Dwain Chambers has to settle for fourth
:29:08. > :29:16.place. drama, because Harry
:29:17. > :29:24.Aikines-Aryeetey must have been thinking, it is me, I know I
:29:25. > :29:29.twitched, I know I am going. The Portuguese athlete was sure it was
:29:30. > :29:37.him, he had walked off, a false start adding to the drama, but what
:29:38. > :29:43.a race from all of the athlete. Perhaps he was turning around
:29:44. > :29:49.towards Harry, but James Dasaolu, really confirming the talent and
:29:50. > :29:58.skill and the class that he has is a 100 metre runner.
:29:59. > :30:07.His coach has done brilliantly with him. It is great he has come
:30:08. > :30:14.through. He will start to believe he is a contender. He is a true
:30:15. > :30:19.finalist. It is brilliant to see. Well done, Harry, finally getting a
:30:20. > :30:26.senior medal. We can hear from a man who is in the Indian summer of his
:30:27. > :30:32.career, Dwain Chambers. He is with Phil Jones.
:30:33. > :30:40.That was the most cruel position to finish. It was tough, but I gave it
:30:41. > :30:48.my all. That is all I could have done. You always do. You gave it
:30:49. > :30:52.your all. You were all going to be in the mix, what was the difference
:30:53. > :30:58.in the end, not quite getting a medal? I am not sure. I will have to
:30:59. > :31:03.look at the replay. This is the nature of the sport. You have to get
:31:04. > :31:08.out and you have to be in it to win it. All I can do is run as fast as
:31:09. > :31:18.my body will allow and fourth place was all I could do today. We have
:31:19. > :31:23.talked about the age you are at, are you still challenging for medals, 16
:31:24. > :31:27.years after you won medal at the European Championship 's? If you
:31:28. > :31:34.look at that in perspective, that part is great. But we want to get on
:31:35. > :31:38.the podium. That is the only part I am gutted about. In sport, you win
:31:39. > :31:47.some and you lose some and you have to treat those imposters the same.
:31:48. > :31:54.Does this drive you even more? It is annoying me. Hopefully, we still
:31:55. > :32:00.have the relay. Harry, James Dasaolu, Lemaitre, it shows the
:32:01. > :32:09.depth of talent developing. Congratulations to them. It is good
:32:10. > :32:12.that Britain has got back into this. I was in their position many moons
:32:13. > :32:19.ago and it is the way the cookie crumbles. STUDIO: It is time to put
:32:20. > :32:25.that into context when you have done it so many times. Credit to him for
:32:26. > :32:30.still having that hugely competitive instinct and not being happy with
:32:31. > :32:37.fourth place at his sixth European Championships. When he was a youth,
:32:38. > :32:43.he was naturally talented. But what a gracious in TV. You know what I
:32:44. > :32:49.have to do. Colin has joined us. You have to warm up. You have to ring
:32:50. > :32:57.the bell, twice. We have not one, but two medals. Another gold medal
:32:58. > :33:12.winner in James Dasaolu. And a bronze medal for Harry. That was a
:33:13. > :33:22.great night for British sprinting. We will talk about the men's 100
:33:23. > :33:26.metres. It was going to be difficult for them all. Under these conditions
:33:27. > :33:30.it was difficult to gather themselves. We have the interruption
:33:31. > :33:36.with the false start and the hassle, really, which you do not want. James
:33:37. > :33:47.Dasaolu has arrived in amazing shape. When we were looking at Jimmy
:33:48. > :33:51.Vicaut, earlier, it would have been good to see them go head-to-head.
:33:52. > :33:56.The James, there was a sense of relief when he crossed the line. At
:33:57. > :34:00.first he was serious, then he smiled. I think he was under
:34:01. > :34:05.personal pressure. He would have looked at the field of thought, I
:34:06. > :34:10.should be able to take this, and if I do not manage to do this there
:34:11. > :34:14.will be questions. Over his championship form and how he handles
:34:15. > :34:19.Championships. What will this do for him, this experience? I hope it will
:34:20. > :34:25.give him confidence that he can battle and deliver when it matters.
:34:26. > :34:29.He can get on the circuit. He is European champion. When they want
:34:30. > :34:33.people to get on the line, he will be a number they will pick up. It is
:34:34. > :34:38.important to get the title because he is now in the mix. When they call
:34:39. > :34:46.Usain Bolt, they will be calling him, as well. And Harry, who burst
:34:47. > :34:52.onto the scene as a brilliant Judy, it took time to get the medal, but
:34:53. > :34:56.he got it tonight, the bronze medal. And so has Ashleigh Nelson. The
:34:57. > :35:00.bronze medal in the women's 100 metres. You could see what it meant
:35:01. > :35:07.to her when she spoke to Phil Jones afterwards. 40 years since a British
:35:08. > :35:10.woman has been on the podium for the 100 metres in the European
:35:11. > :35:15.Championships. We have talked about the strength and depth in British
:35:16. > :35:20.sprinting and that says it all, 40 years to wait for this moment.
:35:21. > :35:25.Andrew Cotter has the ceremony. The rain is beginning to fall again,
:35:26. > :35:32.but it will not bother these women. They are happy with their
:35:33. > :35:38.performance. Cindy Billaud, rather, Soumare, had designs on the gold
:35:39. > :35:43.medal, but happy with the silver in the end. What a moment for the
:35:44. > :35:51.athletes on your right. Ashleigh Nelson, as the rain gets heavier and
:35:52. > :35:58.heavier, it has picked its moment. This is Ashleigh Nelson's moment.
:35:59. > :36:01.Not knowing whether she should go up onto the podium. The smile is there
:36:02. > :36:05.and it was from the moment she crossed the line. She knew she had
:36:06. > :36:12.the bronze medal. What an achievement. We talk about 40 years
:36:13. > :36:16.since British women have won medal in 100 metres in the European
:36:17. > :36:31.Championships. It is now teeming down. Soumare, she ran tremendously
:36:32. > :36:36.well in the first round. Blasted through. A personal best. A little
:36:37. > :36:37.bit slower in the semifinal and could not quite find it in the
:36:38. > :37:00.final. And so the Netherlands, the last
:37:01. > :37:11.gold medal in this event, family Blankers-Koen -- Blankers-Koen. This
:37:12. > :37:21.athlete can do so much. Her choice of events to come. But I think we
:37:22. > :37:23.have seen tonight what a wonderful talent she is over 100 metres. And
:37:24. > :37:40.she has the gold medal. THE NETHERLANDS NATIONAL ANTHEM
:37:41. > :38:27.PLAYS. In the wind and rain, the flags of
:38:28. > :38:41.the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom. I am pleased to say
:38:42. > :38:45.that Harry Aikines-Aryeetey is alongside me after a tremendous
:38:46. > :38:50.performance. An inspired team performance and you have your medal.
:38:51. > :38:57.I am speechless. I know this is the report desperate European
:38:58. > :39:01.Championships, there are no Jamaicans here. I have took
:39:02. > :39:07.congratulate James Dasaolu, he has done what he needed to do. We have
:39:08. > :39:15.grown up together. For myself, like last year, I have been through so
:39:16. > :39:22.much. Only my parents, people close to me, James will know, I have
:39:23. > :39:30.snapped tendon, I have come back, and to get individual medal, I have
:39:31. > :39:35.to thank my trainer, my physio, the national lottery, they have enabled
:39:36. > :39:40.me and James to be in this situation. And all the players out
:39:41. > :39:50.there, I am so happy. I want to hug everybody. Give me a hug! That is a
:39:51. > :39:57.first for me! Congratulations. James, gold-medallist, how does it
:39:58. > :40:03.sound? It is a lovely feeling to be European champion. I am trying to
:40:04. > :40:07.take it in. I did not think I got a good start. I was thinking, what am
:40:08. > :40:14.I going to do? I had to battle through and I am happy to win. In
:40:15. > :40:18.the semifinals he looked like the man to beat and you came through
:40:19. > :40:24.with the goods. You have not had the best build-up to this. Track and
:40:25. > :40:30.field always has ups and downs. For me, it started indoors, I got the
:40:31. > :40:35.hamstring injury. I did not know whether I would compete this
:40:36. > :40:38.season. But fast forward from Birmingham and now European
:40:39. > :40:41.champion. It is a lovely feeling to come away with the medal this
:40:42. > :40:51.season, by first senior medal outdoors. You are European champion.
:40:52. > :40:55.It is amazing feeling. I am trying to take it in, but I am going to
:40:56. > :41:02.just try to enjoy it. An amazing performance. He shunned athletics as
:41:03. > :41:07.a child because he was playing computer games so much. I and
:41:08. > :41:15.thinking she is glad he got on the track. You will be interested to
:41:16. > :41:20.hear from our next competitor, gold-medallist, Tiffany Porter. Also
:41:21. > :41:27.with Phil Jones. Congratulations, what a performance. We have seen you
:41:28. > :41:33.win medals before, but this has to be special. I has yet to win a gold
:41:34. > :41:38.medal, so I am so happy to finally get my gold medal. You were one of
:41:39. > :41:43.the favourites coming in, it was billed as a head-to-head with you
:41:44. > :41:48.and Cindy Billaud. The true mark of an athlete is being able to perform
:41:49. > :41:53.and when it matters the most. I am pleased I came away with the medal.
:41:54. > :41:59.A gold medal, finally, against Cindy, who has had a great season
:42:00. > :42:05.and is a great competitor. Jo Pavey, Mo Farah, now you, it is a gold rush
:42:06. > :42:11.for Britain. Is it infectious, an inspirational performance leads to
:42:12. > :42:15.another? When you see so many people performing and they give their all,
:42:16. > :42:19.it spurs you are in and makes you want to continue and do your best.
:42:20. > :42:27.It was definitely encouraging watching them run before I did. The
:42:28. > :42:37.hard work reaches fruition, it must be satisfying. I have a very good
:42:38. > :42:41.team led by my coach. He has been patient. I am so happy. The National
:42:42. > :42:46.Lottery helps athletes to make our job easier, not having to worry
:42:47. > :42:51.about financial stresses. Everybody who helps us to get here, it means a
:42:52. > :42:58.lot. You have the magical moment on the podium to come. I am beyond
:42:59. > :43:04.ecstatic right now, I am so happy. Thank you so much, guys. STUDIO: So
:43:05. > :43:09.many smiling athletes tonight from Great Britain. That is why, after
:43:10. > :43:15.two days, Great Britain tops the medal table. There is quite a gap
