:02:53. > :03:01.Moment. -- nothing much to see at the moment. The mascot did a good
:03:02. > :03:07.long jump yesterday. Three metres and the pole vault as well! You are
:03:08. > :03:15.overlooking the fact that there could be more than one person in
:03:16. > :03:20.there. More importantly, decathlon standings after the first day on it
:03:21. > :03:26.was quite interesting. Kazmirek just out in front.
:03:27. > :03:47.Krauchanka took a huge leap. Hugely impressive and a ten year personal
:03:48. > :03:50.best for Kazmirek. The high jump has great prospects in the individual

:07:46. > :07:52.the athletes. We know you can perform but can he deliver under

:07:59. > :08:02.for him to know that he almost had it and it cost him by clipping a the
:08:03. > :08:04.eighth hurdles. He has to come and see what he can do. This is a bit
:08:05. > :08:20.tougher as a title to win. I think a goal is slightly out of
:08:21. > :08:31.his reach. An amazing performance by Lindsay Sharp but you wonder if she
:08:32. > :08:34.has anything else left in her legs. The euphoria of coming out and back
:08:35. > :08:42.down again trying to get ready for another championships. I think she
:08:43. > :08:45.is in very good shape. Jessica Judd is coming here a bit brash with a

:08:53. > :09:04.some tough competition for the other runners. Ashley Bryant struggled a
:09:05. > :09:08.little bit on day one. It is not easy to come and do a back-to-back
:09:09. > :09:14.decathlon, so he is battling through. He has a lot of heart, but

:09:42. > :09:47.page or through Twitter. These guests will answer any questions
:09:48. > :09:54.that you have. Amy Child takes to the track. In the introduction, we
:09:55. > :10:01.said she has a better chance of taking goal that she did in the
:10:02. > :10:07.Commonwealth Games. You are right. She has been the most consistent of
:10:08. > :10:10.the European hurdlers. When you come to the Championships, everything
:10:11. > :10:15.goes out the window and you have to forget everything you did before
:10:16. > :10:25.hand, because it is delivering here. It will not be easy, even though she
:10:26. > :10:33.is the favourite. We can see how she has arrived. What about the hurling
:10:34. > :10:39.of Ashley Bryant? We will be seeing that shortly. The first heat was
:10:40. > :10:45.pretty decent. I was looking at the wind speed. It is difficult, he is
:10:46. > :10:54.tired. To save these barriers when you are actually the -- absolutely
:10:55. > :10:59.exhausted... Once you are mentally down, he is behind in his best
:11:00. > :11:04.score, and he is trying to keep the morale high, so if you said mentally
:11:05. > :11:10.tough plus heavy legs, it is challenging. He was in the mix at
:11:11. > :11:20.the Commonwealth Games and that mindset changed. It is. Let's face
:11:21. > :11:24.it. He has not really been in this environment much in this career, so
:11:25. > :11:32.he is still getting rid -- used to it. He has to really test himself
:11:33. > :11:39.amongst the world's elite, so it is a good experience for him. It will
:11:40. > :11:42.stand him in good stead. The men's high jump qualification is getting
:11:43. > :11:50.underway and it promises to be one of the events of the championship.
:11:51. > :12:00.Absolutely. You have the Olympic champion, who is quite in shape, and
:12:01. > :12:06.obviously, the world champion Bondarenko. We have not got the
:12:07. > :12:13.weather to back it up over the next few days, but it still promises to
:12:14. > :12:20.be a great competition. There is a Spanish athlete called Sotomayor to
:12:21. > :12:26.hold the high jump record. Dave, it is all yours with Ashley Bryant.
:12:27. > :12:27.Good morning everybody. Just wondering how Ashley Bryant is
:12:28. > :12:39.feeling this morning. He said it his interview that it was
:12:40. > :12:54.very tiring for him. He is in lane nine. We have Van der Plaetsen and

:13:11. > :13:20.Russian is not tips to get the medals.
:13:21. > :13:32.Van der Plaetsen decides to try and hurdle up the first one anyway. Just
:13:33. > :13:41.in case you are not aware, in the decathlon, the fault start rule is
:13:42. > :13:47.not the same as in normal events. Normally it would be an automatic
:13:48. > :14:08.disqualification. A little wet this morning. How we got a German word
:14:09. > :14:13.for it? It is not as wet as it was earlier. It was raining quite
:14:14. > :14:17.heavily about an hour ago. The weather forecast for the rest of the
:14:18. > :14:20.week is not dissimilar to what we have this morning, so it could be
:14:21. > :14:27.difficult in some of the field events. These are not the sort of
:14:28. > :14:35.conditions these athletes would enjoy. One positive is the fact that
:14:36. > :14:58.it is pretty still. It is not that cold, to be honest. Ashley Bryant on
:14:59. > :15:12.the far side. That was Krauchanka. This of murder is contesting this.
:15:13. > :15:17.Ashley -- a big season best there. Depending on how that comes down, it

:15:21. > :15:26.Ashley Bryant, getting his second a underway, and you could tell that he
:15:27. > :15:30.was tired at the end of day one, and there was a a lot of fire there. He

:15:41. > :15:41.distance, it you are thinking about the medal and you are filled with
:15:42. > :15:56.energy. The event is very strong. We are
:15:57. > :16:04.unclear as to what the scores would be. He looks OK, maybe he is
:16:05. > :16:12.straining a little bit and forcing it. I struggle a bit with the
:16:13. > :16:21.fatigue, he knew he was going to do back-to-back championships.
:16:22. > :16:32.You are a tough man Steve! Thank you. Ashley Bryant really hitting
:16:33. > :16:53.that eighth hurdle pretty hard. 14.87 is his time. Xhaka Enya of

:48:54. > :48:59.be right up there on my first go in the marathon, maybe that was
:49:00. > :49:04.expecting too much. That is not saying he cannot develop to being a

:49:11. > :49:14.a very fast 1500 metres and an outstanding marathon would have been

:51:11. > :51:17.quite close together, so although I am number one, I cannot be

:52:31. > :52:40.season. Ross and over in Heat 3, she has won medals, but Child has shown
:52:41. > :52:45.the most consistency. Becoming European Championship would be huge
:52:46. > :52:51.for her. But coming second in the Commonwealth Games, that was the
:52:52. > :52:57.real expectation, that was a different level, no? A lot of people
:52:58. > :53:05.would say, it is a Olympics, world, Commonwealth. But it is that winning
:53:06. > :53:09.is opposed to coming second. I think so and it is difficult, depending on
:53:10. > :53:13.which events you look at, the Commonwealth Games can go hugely up
:53:14. > :53:19.and down and the same for the Europeans. It is winning a title, it

:53:37. > :53:50.COMMENTATOR: There were a couple of bad days at Glasgow but this is

:56:07. > :56:21.ease down a little bit. Easy enough from Eilidh Child, she
:56:22. > :56:28.is in good shape, it goes on for Child. It is really good to see. She
:56:29. > :56:32.has bounced back from the Commonwealth Games. All of the
:56:33. > :56:35.celebrations and emotions. She is mentally prepared for these
:56:36. > :56:41.championships and she will be going for that gold medal. She has really
:56:42. > :56:48.honed her technique and rhythm. It is a really balanced race that she
:56:49. > :56:52.runs. It takes a lot of time. In this event especially, when
:56:53. > :56:57.conditions are like they are today, heavy rain. The track can look very
:56:58. > :57:00.different and so can you in your mind in your preparations. She has
:57:01. > :57:02.taken this race very seriously and qualified very well. Dominant, that
:57:03. > :57:19.is the most important thing. Child does look very strong at the
:57:20. > :57:22.moment. It is good to see. She has really done it well. Their
:57:23. > :57:27.preparations have been very meticulous this year. Not too many
:57:28. > :57:30.interruptions when it comes to the preparations to this event. When you
:57:31. > :57:33.have the emotions of the Commonwealth Games, home
:57:34. > :57:37.championships, and she delivered a performance very well indeed under
:57:38. > :57:43.immense pressure. But here, the first thing she is looking at is
:57:44. > :57:47.getting hurt 15 strides for the first five or six hurdles before she
:57:48. > :57:54.changes down for this final bend. It makes it easier to go around the
:57:55. > :57:59.turn with the left leg first. That is her 16th stride and she goes back
:58:00. > :58:09.onto her left leg. It means you can hug the corner. She takes her time,
:58:10. > :58:14.no mistakes, no trailing. We have seen athletes being disqualified for
:58:15. > :58:19.putting their lead leg to the side. I really, really great performance
:58:20. > :58:26.and demonstrated the everybody that she is ready to become the champion.
:58:27. > :58:31.Let's hear from her. Colin Jackson saying you look ready to become a
:58:32. > :58:39.champion. Is that how you feel? I am not sure. I was quite nervous. I
:58:40. > :58:46.just wanted to get it out of the way. The rounds are always the bit I
:58:47. > :58:51.don't like. I am glad it was a solid performance and I can go away and
:58:52. > :58:57.relax. It is pretty cool and the rain is falling but you are used to
:58:58. > :59:04.this! I think the ring got heavier but we are all in the same boat,
:59:05. > :59:09.everybody has to deal with it. The success from Glasgow, how tricky has
:59:10. > :59:14.it been, the transition? It has been quite hard to get refocused. After
:59:15. > :59:19.watching Joe last night and seeing how she could do it, none of us have
:59:20. > :59:24.any excuses now, we all have to deliver. What an inspiration she
:59:25. > :59:33.was. It was amazing. We are also proud of her. Great start, well
:59:34. > :59:40.done. We will see how her competition
:59:41. > :59:43.fares. Eilidh Child getting off to a good start. Safely through. This is
:59:44. > :59:59.the result of the first heat. STUDIO: Colin Jackson keeping the
:00:00. > :00:04.pressure on right from the start saying she is ready to become a
:00:05. > :00:16.champion! She knows that in the back of her mind and she does not need to
:00:17. > :00:20.be reminded. You take inspiration from the smallest things. Whether
:00:21. > :00:27.she had any doubts about how she was feeling, worried about the weather,
:00:28. > :00:32.just a little bit thinking, if Jo Pavey can do it, I can do it, and it
:00:33. > :00:37.was a great performance. Sometimes you can sense if a team is doing
:00:38. > :00:47.badly, you think it will not happen for me, but this was massive. It
:00:48. > :00:54.sets the ball rolling. Inspired. You start to feel it could be a really
:00:55. > :00:59.good championship. Maybe it was really good preparation. It is
:01:00. > :01:05.important that you take it up and that the 400 metres start really
:01:06. > :01:10.well to get the team rolling. It was important last night that Jo Pavey
:01:11. > :01:15.went out and did that. In terms of the race, I don't think you could
:01:16. > :01:19.have asked for any more. It seems to pan out very well indeed. We talked
:01:20. > :01:24.about the improvements that she has made with her technique. It is
:01:25. > :01:32.smooth, she is attacking hurdles, which is crucial. You have just got
:01:33. > :01:36.to do that. It is the early morning start, the preparation on the
:01:37. > :01:40.warm-up track and putting it together in the race, which gives
:01:41. > :01:45.you the confidence to know that you can move through to the next around
:01:46. > :01:53.comfortably. This was not a comfortable race for her. She did at
:01:54. > :01:58.tack it but there is no stress on her face at all. It perhaps that
:01:59. > :02:01.makes the transformation from Commonwealth Games and all of the
:02:02. > :02:07.pressure of being the home athlete to be in the number one in Europe
:02:08. > :02:12.and winning a gold medal here. It is very different. In Glasgow, there
:02:13. > :02:17.was a huge poster of her everywhere, you could not miss the fact that she
:02:18. > :02:22.was a home favourite, and she comes here, she knows she is ranked really
:02:23. > :02:32.highly, but she is one of many athletes across all of the athletes
:02:33. > :02:36.that are ranked high. She is not carrying the weight of expectation
:02:37. > :02:39.of other people and she can go out and prove herself. You have to
:02:40. > :02:44.understand that you can deal with pressure and she has proved that
:02:45. > :02:49.with her performance. We are going to head back out now for some field.

:03:21. > :03:27.see the rain coming down and making conditions very difficult will stop
:03:28. > :03:32.the top 12 will go through. The bar is currently at 223. A clearance

:03:39. > :03:47.chance to see the main men of world high jumping, Bondarenko, the
:03:48. > :03:54.champion from last year. He has been huddled under the shelter. He is
:03:55. > :04:01.gracing us with a wonderful clearance there. Minimum energy
:04:02. > :04:11.expended. That shows the class of a men who is the second best jumper of
:04:12. > :04:21.all time, two metres and 42. This is the one European athlete who has
:04:22. > :04:28.beaten Child this year. Ryzhykova, a season best of 55 flat. That was a
:04:29. > :04:36.big win for her. She will be hoping to modify straightforward here.
:04:37. > :04:45.Velvere on the outside. Look at the start list. Barbosa in lane two.
:04:46. > :04:51.Fontanive in Paris. Petersen in for, McMahon in five, Ryzhykova in
:04:52. > :05:09.six and though there on the outside. -- Velvere on the outside. Christine
:05:10. > :05:13.McMahon, 22 years of age. 56.97, a new best. Ryzhykova is interesting,
:05:14. > :05:18.because when she actually set her personal best, it was in these
:05:19. > :05:28.championships two years ago, when she won the bronze medal, so she can
:05:29. > :05:32.Rise to the occasion on the day. She beat Child earlier in the year. She
:05:33. > :05:54.could be a danger for a medal. It looks like Petersen is coming up
:05:55. > :06:02.on our computer. Let's see where he goes. The Danish record-holder,
:06:03. > :06:09.semifinalist at the Olympics, and away she goes. To be fair, these
:06:10. > :06:23.athletes are up very early and it is wet and horrible. They do some
:06:24. > :06:27.drills and jog around, but she was just trying to stay out of the
:06:28. > :06:35.rain. You cannot blame them. It is very chilly as well. The warm-up
:06:36. > :06:39.track is downtown and Zurich and the athletes go there to do the first
:06:40. > :06:47.part of their warm-up and then they come down to the track. It is not
:06:48. > :06:52.ideal women not the best preparation that charter it is not ideal, not
:06:53. > :07:02.the best preparation -- it is not ideal, not the best preparation.
:07:03. > :07:11.Petersen does have enough experience. She should not have been
:07:12. > :07:20.feeling the nerves too much. Barbosa on the inside, Fontanive in lane
:07:21. > :07:36.three. Link for is now empty. Ryzhykova here in lane six. -- lane
:07:37. > :07:43.four. Ryzhykova is going pretty well. Barbosa making a few inroads
:07:44. > :08:01.into Fontanive outside her. Ryzhykova it looks like she is
:08:02. > :08:08.struggling. Her last race was at the Monaco Diamond lead and she did not
:08:09. > :08:20.do too badly there. Barbosa leading best. Ryzhykova now getting her act
:08:21. > :08:33.together. Get it all wrong. Fontanive take second. As she was
:08:34. > :08:37.approaching, she was coming strong, coming into the last hurdle, and we
:08:38. > :08:41.are moving with that momentum, you want to try and attack it, and then
:08:42. > :08:47.she decided that she could not heat it. Tried to put the brakes on a
:08:48. > :08:52.little bit. Let's have a look at this. She has got the momentum
:08:53. > :09:04.coming. Just watch what happens here. You make decisions, do I
:09:05. > :09:09.stretch or push? She completely slips going into that barrier. It
:09:10. > :09:17.looks like before she even took off and she was sliding. Let's have a
:09:18. > :09:25.look at this again. She tries to reach forward and the trips into the
:09:26. > :09:29.barrier and smashes it on the floor. I do not think I ever seen that
:09:30. > :09:33.before. It looks like a last-minute decision. She put a short stride in
:09:34. > :09:49.and then cannot get that lead leg up. She decided she was going to
:09:50. > :09:57.reach for it. That is -- she could have been a possible contender
:09:58. > :10:04.despite the form from earlier. Barbosa is gone. She is going to
:10:05. > :10:08.qualify easily. The Ukrainian works hard into these barriers. A little
:10:09. > :10:17.clash of arms. I think she tripped into the barrier. The messy. She
:10:18. > :10:24.will be frustrated. These are what the Championships are all about. You
:10:25. > :10:31.always have these little accidents. Slippery, wet, makes it
:10:32. > :10:36.unpredictable. And this is a men who does not like to jump in the rain.
:10:37. > :10:47.He has just managed to clear both heights. He goes clear again. He has
:10:48. > :10:50.changed into the high jump spikes. He doesn't like jumping in them,
:10:51. > :10:53.though, and that might explain why he keeps rattling over, just doing
:10:54. > :11:11.enough. It is another clearance. Looking to go clear, and he does.
:11:12. > :11:21.The Polish champion, a men who has jumped 232 this year. These are
:11:22. > :11:25.testing the high jumpers. Two metres 23 might be enough to make the
:11:26. > :11:36.finals. That is the question being asked of Chris Baker. The second
:11:37. > :11:44.attempt, must go clear. No, no, no. He will have one more attempts, but
:11:45. > :11:48.under pressure. We have seen a number of athletes go clear at the
:11:49. > :12:00.height of 223. One more chance for Chris.
:12:01. > :12:15.Protsenko has also cleared. Only six men ever to go past the 240 marks.
:12:16. > :12:22.Strangled it a little bit. Way below what he is capable of, but surely it
:12:23. > :12:28.indicative of the conditions. You can see the reign of. It puts
:12:29. > :12:47.questions in your mind. -- you can see the rain. After that accident
:12:48. > :12:50.for Ryzhykova, it has opened the way for Child. But as Colin Jackson
:12:51. > :12:58.keeps saying, you have got to jump the hurdles. I remember an American
:12:59. > :13:03.athlete coming to the Championships last year in the 400, but I thought
:13:04. > :13:08.Barbosa looked good in the last heat, so she might be throwing
:13:09. > :13:12.herself in as a threat to Child. We are just about ready for the next
:13:13. > :13:19.heat, and we will be back with it shortly.
:13:20. > :13:33.Chris Baker, what are you made of? This could get him to the final. Oh,
:13:34. > :13:39.yes! Chris Baker has gone clear in difficult conditions. Just looking
:13:40. > :13:44.down the sheet, I think only ten athletes have cleared this height.
:13:45. > :13:49.12 will advance. It looks like the clearance of Chris Baker will
:13:50. > :13:59.advance him and to the final on Friday. Wonderful stuff. Well done,
:14:00. > :14:06.Chris. We move on to heat three of the winning's 400 metre hurdles.
:14:07. > :14:30.Look out for Davydova of Russia. This is the women you has a great
:14:31. > :14:46.title. Magi, one of the favourites. There is Russell ova -- Rosolova.
:14:47. > :14:50.Kolesnychenko of Ukraine, when the juniors a couple of years ago. The
:14:51. > :15:22.Lithuanian that goes in line eight. Linkiewicz might be in the running
:15:23. > :15:36.for an automatic qualifying place. So too would be Davydova, if she is
:15:37. > :15:43.in form. I mentioned the defending champion might be going for the
:15:44. > :15:51.championships, she is in Lane 4. A good start by Rosolova. Elegant
:15:52. > :16:05.looking runner and moving very well. In Lane 6. Rosolova looking very
:16:06. > :16:17.strong at the moment, silver in the last championships. Davydova, the
:16:18. > :16:31.defending European champion. Three to go through automatically.
:16:32. > :16:40.Kolesnikov -- Linkiewicz is in second. Rosolova's time, not too
:16:41. > :16:46.impressive but a decent enough run from her. Safely negotiating the
:16:47. > :16:56.first round which as we have seen, is by no means guaranteed. 15th to
:16:57. > :17:06.hurdle eight, from Rosolova. A balanced race from her. Don't be
:17:07. > :17:13.disguised by her time, she can go a lot faster than that. A nice and
:17:14. > :17:16.balanced run, she is switched on and focused. The only thing that could
:17:17. > :17:24.really worry her as she comes down the home straight on the wrong leg.
:17:25. > :17:30.And when the pressure is on, that could be a little bit of a challenge
:17:31. > :17:39.for her. A long way high-end Rosolova, there was an interesting
:17:40. > :17:47.battle for third place. Between Davydova and Staisiunaite. Rosolova
:17:48. > :17:56.a long way clear and looking pretty impressive from start to finish.
:17:57. > :18:11.Rosolova safely through. We are at the business end of this meant's
:18:12. > :18:19.high jump. Fassinotti, trains in the UK. He has a failure and this is his
:18:20. > :18:24.second attempt. He looked heavy may be on that take off but it is a good
:18:25. > :18:29.clearance for the Italian champion. He just seemed to get stuck
:18:30. > :18:37.slightly, maybe it is just his style of jumping. It looks as if it may be
:18:38. > :18:47.a height that will advance him through to the final. Second attempt
:18:48. > :18:54.for Fassinotti. Ivanov of Bulgaria has two fails at this height. Only
:18:55. > :19:00.three fouls, if you do get three, you are out that this is his last
:19:01. > :19:05.chance. Well done. That is a fantastic clearance. Just touching
:19:06. > :19:20.the bar. With pretty much every part of his body. It is a good clearance.
:19:21. > :19:30.He knows that will get him through. 20 years of age, Ivanov, a third
:19:31. > :19:41.time clearance. Churyla. Of Belarus. 21 years of age. This is his third
:19:42. > :19:47.attempt at 2.23. He is heavily strapped. He rattled it but it
:19:48. > :19:55.stayed on. Another third time clearance for another youngster.
:19:56. > :20:21.Churyla again just rattling the bar. Britain's Chris Baker, gutsy
:20:22. > :20:34.performance in the rain, well done Chris. He makes the final.
:20:35. > :20:47.We have a future weeds coming in and this one from Gary Burgess. -- we
:20:48. > :20:54.have a few tweets. He asks, does Paula think she has what it takes to
:20:55. > :21:04.do a Jo Pavey and go to Rio in eight few years? -- a few years. We all
:21:05. > :21:09.want to keep running but I don't think my foot would allow me to race
:21:10. > :21:17.at a high enough level. But I would love to. Thinking back to Atlanta in
:21:18. > :21:21.1996, Steve Cram mentioned about the warm up track here being away from
:21:22. > :21:27.the track. It was the same in Atlanta wasn't it? Yes and then you
:21:28. > :21:31.have to modify your warm up. You don't do all of it on the one track
:21:32. > :21:36.because you don't have to do another warm up in your 15-20 minute journey
:21:37. > :21:43.to the other warm up area which we had. I find it very strange. It was
:21:44. > :21:46.unsettling. You are on a bus with all of your competitors and trying
:21:47. > :21:51.not to make eye contact and it was just uncomfortable! That was the
:21:52. > :21:58.worst thing, being herded together with all of your competitors. People
:21:59. > :22:06.don't understand that in the call room area, there is very much but
:22:07. > :22:09.one-upmanship, people saying, I have warmed up so much better, and then
:22:10. > :22:18.when you are put on a bus together, it makes it more focused as well. It
:22:19. > :22:27.can play on people's mind and make a difference mentally. Chris Baker is
:22:28. > :22:31.with Phil. Tremendous performance in the rain, what it is like when you
:22:32. > :22:39.see the weather conditions like that? I like it, I am used to the
:22:40. > :22:43.rain so it was perfect for me. We have seen you wear the cap and not
:22:44. > :22:51.wear the cap, what is the thinking? It just keeps me relaxed. As an
:22:52. > :22:57.experience compared to Glasgow and the crowd cheering you on there,
:22:58. > :23:01.what has it be like you, a little more subdued? Yellow mark a little
:23:02. > :23:07.bit, but the experience is great. Coming from Glasgow to this, it has
:23:08. > :23:17.been amazing. It has been a great year for me. I have been chatting
:23:18. > :23:26.about what I will do now between now and the final. Good luck for the
:23:27. > :23:41.final. STUDIO: We had Sotomayor and in this fourth heat, we have a pedro
:23:42. > :23:43.so -- Pedroso. , Tait and they are distantly related as Cooly the Cow
:23:44. > :23:52.is to Jonathan Edwards! This is Klopsch having a pretty good
:23:53. > :25:30.season. Pedroso has really stormed through
:25:31. > :25:36.the first hundred metres. And Klopsch setting the pace here. There
:25:37. > :25:40.is Titimets, just got her head down. She would be the one we would expect
:25:41. > :25:47.to come through. Klopsch is really going hard. Surely she cannot keep
:25:48. > :25:51.that going? She might be heading for a new personal best if she did.
:25:52. > :25:59.Pedroso starting to look tired as well. Let's see how Klopsch
:26:00. > :26:06.negotiates this one. Titimets can now start to come through. Titimets
:26:07. > :26:16.is going to take the victory as expected. Klopsch would not be too
:26:17. > :26:26.far away from a personal best. She really did attack it hard.
:26:27. > :26:35.It is difficult with athletes like her, she is always there, but if
:26:36. > :26:41.Child got beat by her, she would be pretty disappointed. I loved the
:26:42. > :26:46.tone of that, she would be pretty disappointed. All of these runners
:26:47. > :26:50.have the potential to run a lot quicker. The winners we have seen so
:26:51. > :26:56.far, they are still running well within themselves. Which gives us a
:26:57. > :27:02.little bit more excitement. But also some anxiety for Eilidh Child. She
:27:03. > :27:05.handled the pressure of the Commonwealth Games well and she will
:27:06. > :27:15.come here with a wise head, knowing what she can do.
:27:16. > :27:30.Krauchanka of Belarus. That is a big throw. He has a lifetime best of 47
:27:31. > :27:38.metres plus but no mark from this season. As he had from a number of
:27:39. > :27:44.events. He is certainly a contender for medals, if not gold. You cannot
:27:45. > :27:49.help thinking with the pole vaulter coming next, in the rain, after what
:27:50. > :27:55.happened last week in Glasgow, that the decathletes will not be
:27:56. > :27:59.relishing that. Krauchanka is certainly relishing what looks as
:28:00. > :28:07.though it is a very long throw. And should he hit his marks, he is
:28:08. > :28:16.capable of taking gold here. That is close to his lifetime best.
:28:17. > :28:21.We have got Andy Turner, Lawrence Clarke, with some illustrious shoes
:28:22. > :28:34.to fill. Colin Jackson up to the first
:28:35. > :29:37.hurdle. Four in a row, what a stud! We
:29:38. > :29:43.forget how amazingly good he was. Explosive out of the blocks. And
:29:44. > :30:06.meticulous with his training. I always felt sorry for Tony Jarrett.
:30:07. > :30:19.Colin Jackson, did you enjoy that? Yes, seeing me in my youthful days!
:30:20. > :30:24.The European Championships are always really important for me,
:30:25. > :30:29.because it was always setting me up for the big confrontations with the
:30:30. > :30:35.USA and Cuba and the Canadians. Tony was always on my case. I always had
:30:36. > :30:39.somebody chasing me down and pushing me and that helps me with my
:30:40. > :30:45.performances. In that commentary box there is another athlete who got
:30:46. > :30:51.four gold medals in a row. Yes Steve Batley did that in the javelin. He
:30:52. > :30:59.is looking at me and giving me daggers! It as part more easy to do
:31:00. > :31:05.it in the field that in the track. One of the most remarkable things,
:31:06. > :31:14.every two years, are you a big fan of that change from four years to
:31:15. > :31:21.two years? No. Every four years makes it more special. We have
:31:22. > :31:27.annual championships. The opportunity to -- I would prefer it
:31:28. > :31:32.to be four years again, but it gives the opportunity to the athletes to
:31:33. > :31:36.get titles. If you are having a dodgy season and you miss out, you
:31:37. > :31:41.can regain a title a little bit later down the line. Championship
:31:42. > :31:59.record, 1998 in Budapest, triple jump record, the big favourite,
:32:00. > :32:04.Pascal. By and thus far cry have no doubt that he will look at that and
:32:05. > :32:12.think he can get close to that -- I have no doubt that he would look at
:32:13. > :32:17.that and think he can take it. He is being pushed towards that time.
:32:18. > :32:25.Sharman, Clark and Turner. Let's hear from Turner. The European
:32:26. > :32:29.Championships have brought you success in the past, but this one
:32:30. > :32:37.has an added significance for you. Yes will stop I have had a lot of
:32:38. > :32:43.success. Bronze eight years ago, a gold four years ago, but I decided
:32:44. > :32:49.that now is a good time for me to hang up my spikes and call it a day.
:32:50. > :32:56.This is my last year competing. I never thought I would be ready to
:32:57. > :33:02.say I am ready to retire, but I can honestly say that I am. I have had a
:33:03. > :33:07.few dark places over the last year, with surgeries and my mother passing
:33:08. > :33:11.away, I thought I would never run again. For a wild I did not want to
:33:12. > :33:18.do anything and then I decided that she would want me to carry on. My
:33:19. > :33:24.first race back was in Birmingham and people knew that my mother had
:33:25. > :33:30.passed away, and each year that I got on the starting line blew me
:33:31. > :33:43.away. I was in a fit state to do a race after that. -- no fit state. In
:33:44. > :33:48.my mind, I don't think I could have lived with myself if injury
:33:49. > :33:55.determined the end of my career. For the amount of times that my Achilles
:33:56. > :34:00.was hurting me, since my last surgery, they have been absolutely
:34:01. > :34:03.fine, I can moonwalk first thing in the morning, eye candy ballet, and
:34:04. > :34:13.that is not something I have been able to do -- I can do ballet.
:34:14. > :34:19.Turner is the European champion! I have one more than ever thought Ike
:34:20. > :34:26.could win. It is unexpected. I am just some -- I could win. I am just
:34:27. > :34:39.some kid from Birmingham. Is there a sense of relief? I am a competitor.
:34:40. > :34:43.I want this. I wants to do well. Sometimes he want to witness an much
:34:44. > :34:48.you try too hard. I am going into this a bit more relaxed. I want to
:34:49. > :34:54.do well. I want to win a medal. That is what I am here for. Andy Turner
:34:55. > :34:58.calling time on his career at the end of this year. He is an athlete
:34:59. > :35:04.who wears his heart on his sleeve. Yes. It makes you sad hearing him
:35:05. > :35:08.talk like that. He has had to contend with a lot. It is hard to be
:35:09. > :35:13.injured and feel that you are not getting the best out of your self.
:35:14. > :35:18.He has had some wonderful medals, surprise medals, but he is someone
:35:19. > :35:23.that I just feel missed out a lot. He could have probably just got
:35:24. > :35:28.better times over his career had he not had to battle so hard in injury,
:35:29. > :35:32.and it is the life of an athlete, it happens, but it is that recognition
:35:33. > :35:38.of that point where it is enough, you have had enough of the battles,
:35:39. > :35:43.the challenges, and you want to leave the sport on your terms. He is
:35:44. > :35:51.able to run, which is great. It is sad, but it is that time to face the
:35:52. > :35:56.facts, time to go. He has also shown a real resilience. 2010-2011 were
:35:57. > :36:01.his best events and since then he has been fighting against injury. He
:36:02. > :36:06.said that there are only so many times that you can go through that,
:36:07. > :36:12.keep battling, keep battling. He will look back on these memories to
:36:13. > :36:17.keep him going through hours of physiotherapy, rehabilitation,
:36:18. > :36:21.sitting out while things healed, and there are only so many times that
:36:22. > :36:26.you can do that. When you are injured all the time you are not fun
:36:27. > :36:32.to be around. He has got young children, his partner, and it is
:36:33. > :36:36.just tough. You want to be partner -- happy and be the person that
:36:37. > :36:40.people want to be around, and when you are battling injury, it is a
:36:41. > :36:45.depressing time. We are going to the commentary box. You have watched
:36:46. > :36:51.Andy Turner's career. What did you think of him in the hurdles? Many
:36:52. > :36:55.years ago, at the back end of my career, he was just coming into the
:36:56. > :37:01.competition and he has run against me in numerous occasions and by
:37:02. > :37:04.always found that he was interesting -- interested in mastering the
:37:05. > :37:11.event. When you really want to learn, that is a good place to be.
:37:12. > :37:17.He progressed to being a champion. Even before that, he suffered from
:37:18. > :37:20.lots of injuries, and he had that wonderful purple patch in his
:37:21. > :37:25.career, winning those titles, and then he had to battle again with
:37:26. > :37:29.injuries. You can imagine that it was frustrating for him because he
:37:30. > :37:35.had ups and downs and had to pull his weight back again. It is awful
:37:36. > :37:38.for an athlete, your body let you down at those critical times.
:37:39. > :37:44.Perhaps you thought he did not get the times out in his career that he
:37:45. > :37:52.might have for -- might have hoped for. He was always there or
:37:53. > :37:56.thereabouts at 130, he was consistent with his performances, so
:37:57. > :38:04.if he could run that all the time, back-to-back, he would've had the
:38:05. > :38:11.opportunity to get perhaps into the 13.07 class. His final major
:38:12. > :38:15.championships here. What is a realistic expectation? He needs to
:38:16. > :38:21.get into the final and he is capable of that. He can't get down. He has
:38:22. > :38:35.to put everything behind him and say, right, I need to beat the
:38:36. > :38:45.spinal. -- this final. Pascal from France, 12.95 is his record. We
:38:46. > :38:49.watched him with our mouths wide open because he went out there
:38:50. > :38:54.aggressively and won the title. He beat everybody clear. He came up to
:38:55. > :39:01.me after and say, I want your record next, with a big, beaming smile, and
:39:02. > :39:06.I said, go for it, young men! He is fun to be around. I hope he can hold
:39:07. > :39:12.it together. That is the question, when you are the favourite, it is
:39:13. > :39:18.dealing with the pressure. How do you analyse him from a psychological
:39:19. > :39:22.point of view? He is a young person. This is an occasion where he has an
:39:23. > :39:28.opportunity to win a title. We saw him indoors when he was the leader.
:39:29. > :39:33.He lost that title. I think it burned him and he worked hard to put
:39:34. > :39:38.himself in the position of being one of the main contenders outdoors for
:39:39. > :39:43.every single competition. Now he comes to the Championships with
:39:44. > :39:49.everybody looking at him. He will have his own expectations, but will
:39:50. > :39:57.he deliver? Only he can answer that question. French sprinting is doing
:39:58. > :40:05.well at the moment. You have got quite a few. There might be one with
:40:06. > :40:13.an injury. But there will be a sense of confidence in the French team
:40:14. > :40:20.that will help Martinot-Lagarde. There is a real flurry of sprinting
:40:21. > :40:27.that is coming back into France. For me, it is an exciting time. It is
:40:28. > :40:35.Great Britain against France in the spring. And in the rain! We saw a
:40:36. > :40:41.fall in the women's hurdles. What are conditions like? It is awful.
:40:42. > :40:47.You throw up your lead leg and run into a mass of water continuously,
:40:48. > :40:52.and that is off-putting. They have done it, they had a go at it, and
:40:53. > :40:57.for them, they will just deal with the circumstances that they have
:40:58. > :41:04.been thrown into. Thank you. Just to catch up with the results to see who
:41:05. > :41:08.has qualified and who has not. Just before we have the high hurdles for
:41:09. > :41:23.the men, the women's 400 hurdles, Child topping the qualifiers.
:41:24. > :41:29.Titimets, Barbosa, the only one who looks like she could possibly
:41:30. > :41:44.challenge Child. Fastest loser spot going to Troest.
:41:45. > :41:52.An extra qualifier there. We move onto the high hurdles, the 110
:41:53. > :42:01.hurdles, and martinet -- Martinot-Lagarde dominates. Some
:42:02. > :42:20.other strong names in there as well. A class of heart. -- apart. Borini
:42:21. > :42:38.celebrated the juniors -- Perini celebrated the juniors last year.
:42:39. > :42:42.This athlete still has some pace. At a former European indoor champion
:42:43. > :43:02.way back when, 2007, he goes in late eight. Martinot-Lagarde has left all
:43:03. > :43:09.others. His brother included. He was in the fourth heat. He is the
:43:10. > :43:32.younger brother and far better hurdler.
:43:33. > :43:47.A couple of hurdles heat Martinot-Lagarde. Losing ground.
:43:48. > :43:53.13.30, into the very slightest of wins. Ten barriers negotiated.
:43:54. > :43:59.Shaking that hand. A little bit untidy in the middle. I think he
:44:00. > :44:05.heat his hand on the barrier. That can sometimes happen. He crashed one
:44:06. > :44:13.of those hurdles. I think it was her role six. -- hurdle six. He comes
:44:14. > :44:18.off it strongly. He has to make room. There he goes. Cutters that
:44:19. > :44:24.one. That holds him back a little bit. He works into these barriers
:44:25. > :44:35.very well indeed. He literally jogged into line. He changed over
:44:36. > :44:41.the winter from seven strides up to eight strides. It is trendy for
:44:42. > :44:46.athletes now to do certain strides. Most Europeans in the early 80s that
:44:47. > :44:51.a seven strides approach. You just have to get comfortable in that
:44:52. > :44:55.first hurdle. That is why they change down so they can work a lot
:44:56. > :44:59.harder into it. A very strong headwind. If you are not strong
:45:00. > :45:04.enough you can run into problems. He certainly does not have that
:45:05. > :45:09.problem. He is only just 22, so he is getting stronger and more
:45:10. > :45:18.physically imposing. A very difficult men to beat. Safely
:45:19. > :45:27.through, along with Noga. Just a slight wrap of the knuckles.
:45:28. > :45:33.Martinot-Lagarde, the favourite, safely through the first round. That
:45:34. > :45:40.is going to hurt in the cold, isn't it?
:45:41. > :45:50.It have not seen it before. I have seen a lot of the van hurdle but I
:45:51. > :45:53.have not seen that. It looks good! Look how it just went through.
:45:54. > :46:00.Lovely, smooth. Apart from hitting it with his lead
:46:01. > :46:19.leg, he was so relaxed. He is quite a tall guy so he has to
:46:20. > :46:23.make adjustments in and off that hurdle but he has such frequency
:46:24. > :46:28.between those hurdles, that pitter patter motion he has created, but he
:46:29. > :46:35.has a lot of speed over those hurdles as well. Colin, let's chat
:46:36. > :46:49.about those seven strides to the first hurdle. Somebody likened it to
:46:50. > :47:04.the files be flop in high jumping. Not at all. Many athletes have taken
:47:05. > :47:09.seven strides. It is not that unusual. It goes back a long way.
:47:10. > :47:13.The athletes with long legs who wanted to drive harder into the
:47:14. > :47:20.first hurdle. That they find more comfortable just doing seven
:47:21. > :47:25.strides. You work an eight strider. Did you try some? I could have done
:47:26. > :47:28.seven strides if I wanted to but the frequency was important for me. The
:47:29. > :47:39.pitter patter strides of eight wheelie set me up for coming in and
:47:40. > :47:42.off every barrier. I guess the star at the time set the trend. So now
:47:43. > :47:56.everybody is thinking seven is the way to go. Aries picked it up
:47:57. > :48:00.because when he was young he did seven strides. But they all want to
:48:01. > :48:04.have a go now and some will be more successful than others. Lawrence
:48:05. > :48:13.Clarke from Great Britain is in the next heat. The Commonwealth Games
:48:14. > :48:18.was the initial target. It did not quite go to plan for me. I ran
:48:19. > :48:24.pretty poorly and half a second off my best. In a way, coming back from
:48:25. > :48:29.that gave me an extra boost into this training before the Europeans.
:48:30. > :48:38.Because they are far more important and arguably, I know Pascal
:48:39. > :48:45.Martinot-Lagarde has run a very good time this year. If I am to get
:48:46. > :48:49.another chance this year, this is it and this is what I have been
:48:50. > :48:53.targeting. I am in the best shape. I had the best training session ever
:48:54. > :49:00.on Friday. The Commonwealth Games was a real kick in the wrong place,
:49:01. > :49:06.that is for sure! Lawrence Clarke, fourth in the Olympics, that in
:49:07. > :49:10.London, but perhaps not progressed in the way he might have hoped since
:49:11. > :49:15.then. I think a lot of us expected more from him. We keep talking of
:49:16. > :49:24.these injuries that creep up at the wrong time. He does not seem to have
:49:25. > :49:27.moved on. Let's hope he moves in the right direction in these
:49:28. > :49:32.championships. He needs another good winter binding to get down to the
:49:33. > :49:37.times but I think he is capable. Colin Jackson, what did you make of
:49:38. > :49:41.Lawrence Clarke? He is one of these guys who study again, the whole
:49:42. > :49:46.event of athletics and he's silly enjoys hurdling. He used to come and
:49:47. > :49:53.question me continuously when he was a young man, which was the best way
:49:54. > :49:59.of running over them. I said to him always, hurdling is like your own
:50:00. > :50:03.fingerprint, it is very personal to you. You have to develop your own
:50:04. > :50:09.way of clearing the barrier that is successful. I think he is a quality
:50:10. > :50:10.athlete. If you are fourth in the Lebid games, you have to be half
:50:11. > :50:26.decent. Steve Cram, it is all yours. Lawrence Clarke really needs to be
:50:27. > :50:36.on his game here. The first three just to qualify by rights. Almeida
:50:37. > :50:59.of Portugal, Furer, his birthday today. That is Traber. Almeida,
:51:00. > :51:14.Portuguese champion. And somebody has made Furer a nice banner!
:51:15. > :51:20.Brorsson from Sweden. Next him, Trajkovic from Cyprus. This is Dal
:51:21. > :51:32.Molin. Lawrence Clarke, by his own
:51:33. > :51:35.admission, disappointing Commonwealth Games and wants to be
:51:36. > :51:41.much better here. He has Bascou next to him. He missed a medal at these
:51:42. > :51:47.championships four years ago in Barcelona. He has seen things that
:51:48. > :51:53.certainly move forward in French high hurdling since then but he has
:51:54. > :52:00.run a new personal best, 13.25, putting him right up there in the
:52:01. > :52:06.rankings. Bascou and Clarke on this side and Traber on the far side for
:52:07. > :52:07.Germany. Dal Molin will be amongst it as well. But only three to
:52:08. > :52:32.definitely go through. Bascou and Clarke getting away well.
:52:33. > :52:40.Almeida and Traber starting to come into this. Bascou pulling away. It
:52:41. > :52:46.will be Bascou, Traber and Clarke. They are the top three. They are the
:52:47. > :52:56.three you would have expected. Lawrence Clarke... He lost a good
:52:57. > :53:01.yard or so in the first hurdle on Bascou. But he did get it back. I
:53:02. > :53:05.was worried for him in his first couple of flights but he got into
:53:06. > :53:10.the race eventually. I think when Bascou got in front of him, Lawrence
:53:11. > :53:13.Clarke could not quite go past him because his arms were just holding
:53:14. > :53:20.him back. That is really off-putting as they hurdler -- as a hurdler.
:53:21. > :53:29.Your body tends to go where your lead leg is. If you are drawn next
:53:30. > :53:35.to each other, the chances are you are going to clash and I think that
:53:36. > :53:38.is what happened here. Perhaps if it did happen, Lawrence Clarke will
:53:39. > :53:49.tell us. Bascou is a good-quality hurdler. When you are running
:53:50. > :53:52.against somebody, the way the French are executing the race at this time,
:53:53. > :54:00.you have to be at your best at all times. You can see how close their
:54:01. > :54:04.arms are getting to each other. Lawrence Clarke will not be able to
:54:05. > :54:09.get past him. You have to literally lean on him and pushed him out of
:54:10. > :54:16.the way. You have got those barriers as well. 3.5 feet tall but you have
:54:17. > :54:21.to contend with. But he is through and that is the most important
:54:22. > :54:32.thing. Bascou is right on the edge of his lane isn't he?
:54:33. > :54:40.We saw there was a bit of coming together, how did you see it? For
:54:41. > :54:48.me, it was just about keeping it clean.
:54:49. > :54:56.I made a complete hash of it in Glasgow and I am here to make
:54:57. > :54:59.amends. I am through to the semi. What sort of transition has it been
:55:00. > :55:03.from the games where you were disappointed to hear when you had to
:55:04. > :55:09.pick yourself up? It has been really hard. Hard four or five days of
:55:10. > :55:12.training, last Friday, it was the best training session I have ever
:55:13. > :55:18.had. Hopefully they are more things to come. It will be good to get this
:55:19. > :55:23.out of your system, the frustrations of Glasgow and get back racing
:55:24. > :55:30.again? Glasgow with the biggest downer I have ever had in my career.
:55:31. > :55:34.I was in tears by the end of it. This is the best competition there
:55:35. > :55:41.is this year. It is the fastest track in the world. I could not be
:55:42. > :55:48.in a better place to run well. Wish you well for the next round.
:55:49. > :55:58.It is a new track surface. New personal best for the German,
:55:59. > :55:59.Traber, getting between Lawrence Clarke and Bascou. Those three go
:56:00. > :56:09.through. STUDIO: We get the sense of
:56:10. > :56:13.disappointment Lawrence Clarke felt after the Commonwealth Games. But
:56:14. > :56:19.this gives him a chance to bounce back. You have heard people
:56:20. > :56:25.approaching it differently with their training. He probably felt he
:56:26. > :56:29.needed to put some work in to push out that awful experience of the
:56:30. > :56:34.games. If he has had a good training session, it would have changed his
:56:35. > :56:37.mental approach to this competition. He is a bit is appointed with the
:56:38. > :56:41.heats but he has got through safely and that is all that matters.
:56:42. > :56:44.Hopefully he will build from this. I was surprised he said that he had
:56:45. > :56:52.five hard days of training. You would have hoped light days would
:56:53. > :56:57.help your body and mind recover. Maybe he felt he needed something.
:56:58. > :57:02.Maybe he has missed some work and he felt he needed to blow the cobwebs
:57:03. > :57:08.out. The danger is, that can make you a little heavy. I personally use
:57:09. > :57:12.to prefer not to do too much and try to stay fresh and do a little bit of
:57:13. > :57:16.speed work but athletes are all different. It is still very windy
:57:17. > :57:22.out there. Colin, you talked about the lane drawn and the difficulty he
:57:23. > :57:27.had with the French athlete. Was it something you looked at when you had
:57:28. > :57:33.a lane drawn for a raise? That was one of the reasons I got out of the
:57:34. > :57:36.blocks really well, because I wanted to be in front early! It is a
:57:37. > :57:40.problem when arms are coming across you. You cannot go past your
:57:41. > :57:47.opponent when you are in midair. That can cost you. What Lawrence
:57:48. > :57:50.Clarke was aiming to do with this training would be a couple of hard
:57:51. > :57:55.runs over ten with the hurdles brought in so we have to move very
:57:56. > :57:59.quickly indeed. With some hard sprinting sessions. He would try to
:58:00. > :58:03.marry those things to get the best performance out of them. A couple of
:58:04. > :58:07.days rest after that is fine and I think he will execute a better race
:58:08. > :58:13.come the semifinal as well. You talk to him about technique. He has an
:58:14. > :58:19.interesting almost double arm over the hurdles. I said about having
:58:20. > :58:25.your own fingerprint over the event, it has to be the most effective and
:58:26. > :58:28.efficient way. As a good coach, you have to enhance what somebody does
:58:29. > :58:33.naturally to produce the best performance you can out of them. His
:58:34. > :58:40.technique is very unusual but it is his. His technique, unusual, but
:58:41. > :58:44.somebody who is perhaps almost a perfect technician would be will
:58:45. > :58:53.Shaman who comes up in the next heat. His technique is almost
:58:54. > :58:56.flawless. What he can do certainly in the back end of the race, is
:58:57. > :59:02.relying on his technique to see him through. He does not have to press
:59:03. > :59:07.because he is unlikely to make a mistake. But he did clip one of the
:59:08. > :59:14.barriers in the final in the Commonwealth Games which is unusual
:59:15. > :59:19.for him. We have the Commonwealth Games final on-screen. He is just
:59:20. > :59:23.running beautifully well and he makes that mistake there, a crucial
:59:24. > :59:32.mistake and it drags him back. He loses the title by a couple of
:59:33. > :59:36.hundreds. Of the two Championships, the Commonwealth was the easy one
:59:37. > :59:45.given how well we saw Pascale run in his heats. They are both people who
:59:46. > :59:49.can run under 30 seconds in both championships but the one here is
:59:50. > :59:58.far more consistent. Colin is alongside Andrew for the commentary.
:59:59. > :00:13.So close at the last three World Championships.
:00:14. > :00:24.There is Baji of Hungary. Shabanov, the Russian champion.
:00:25. > :00:43.We have Buhler, the German champion in Lane 1.
:00:44. > :00:50.This heat is made a little more roomy with the withdrawals of Ristic
:00:51. > :01:31.and Kanervo. A lot of them are finding it
:01:32. > :01:48.frustrating putting their feet into the blocks, I think it is because it
:01:49. > :01:49.is higher than normal. It has gone a little dark overhead again and a
:01:50. > :01:58.little cooler. Again, Buhler from Germany in Lane
:01:59. > :02:24.1. Sharman in lane four. Sharman a little bit slow out of the
:02:25. > :02:35.blocks. Sharman looking comfortable at the moment. In the lead at the
:02:36. > :02:51.moment. Sharman, the winner. The time for him, 13.29. Sharman moves
:02:52. > :03:22.on. That was a really nice performance by him.
:03:23. > :03:29.Sharman, as majestic as he is, has done a really good job. And handled
:03:30. > :04:03.this round very well. Got out in front early.
:04:04. > :04:26.It looked crisp and clean and sharp and just what you wanted. I am
:04:27. > :04:30.pleased with that. We all come together on this Great Britain
:04:31. > :04:36.occasion, it was England last time at the Commonwealth Games but there
:04:37. > :04:42.is a great feeling of unity within the team and everybody is really
:04:43. > :04:46.relaxed. I did what I needed to you and prepare for tomorrow because now
:04:47. > :04:55.I am at the business end of the competition. Jo Pavey was amazing
:04:56. > :05:01.last night. By the time she got back I was asleep, she was running quite
:05:02. > :05:06.late. So inspirational. And the season you have had, performing time
:05:07. > :05:12.after time, the consistency must delight you? It is good, this is the
:05:13. > :05:17.first round. You have to be competitive during these kind of
:05:18. > :05:17.competitions. It will be really exciting tomorrow night
:05:18. > :05:22.competitions. It will be really exciting because I am not the only
:05:23. > :05:28.guy running quick in Europe at the moment, we have the world leader
:05:29. > :05:32.here, we have another bronze-medallist from Moscow. When
:05:33. > :05:54.we all get together and scrap it out, I cannot wait. When you are
:05:55. > :05:56.consistent you can prove that you can do that. It is just talk until
:05:57. > :06:10.we actually do it, isn't it? So he moves through. With a forward
:06:11. > :06:12.to seeing him competing in the semifinals tomorrow. There is
:06:13. > :06:35.confirmation of that. Sharman is a great technician, isn't
:06:36. > :06:37.he? Lovely to watch. I am enjoying the season with him. We have heard
:06:38. > :06:54.him talk about consistency. You just knew there would be a big
:06:55. > :06:59.run at some point in previous championships and I feel the same
:07:00. > :07:05.way about Sharman. He is constantly around that 32 mark, making it look
:07:06. > :07:13.really easy and really comfortable. He is so good on hurdle five onwards
:07:14. > :07:17.that you feel that if he can get a great start he might get a new
:07:18. > :07:22.personal best. There have been a few races where he have -- has won
:07:23. > :07:27.consistently. We have looked at the clock and thought it would be 13.01
:07:28. > :07:33.and it has not been. He is frustrated. You cannot chase it. He
:07:34. > :07:38.knows it is going to come, he is in shape. It could be these
:07:39. > :07:47.championships where he finally gets the PB. Watching him run between the
:07:48. > :07:51.hurdles in contrast to Martinot-Lagarde, he is just a
:07:52. > :07:58.little bit shorter. It is all about the leg length. Just a couple of
:07:59. > :08:06.inches on the inside leg, and he can pick up his legs in between the
:08:07. > :08:12.barriers. Sharman shuffles in between the barriers. I do believe
:08:13. > :08:25.he has a 10th of a second to come in. I think realistically... Andy
:08:26. > :08:32.Turner has announced he is going to retire at the end of this year.
:08:33. > :08:48.Eight British hurdler who has been injured says that Andy Turner is a
:08:49. > :08:54.legend and a top bloke. I have given everything. What a great sendoff it
:08:55. > :09:01.would be. Back to Steve Cram. everything. What a great sendoff it
:09:02. > :09:10.would be. Back to Steve Cram. There have been one or two easy
:09:11. > :09:17.heats but this is not one of them. Let's hope he can perform well.
:09:18. > :09:34.There are some fastest loser spots available. This is the men who
:09:35. > :09:54.followed him and 2012. The older brother of Pascal, Kiss of Hungary,
:09:55. > :09:58.Andy Turner. Andy has raised quite a few of these and leads in his
:09:59. > :10:05.illustrious career and you will be hoping that he can get another
:10:06. > :10:23.victory over them. Top three qualifies. Andy Turner has got to
:10:24. > :10:29.get into the top three. Was Andy Turner third or fourth? We will have
:10:30. > :10:42.to watch the clock. 13.30 was the winning time. And he needs to be
:10:43. > :10:46.bigger than the 13.258 -- 13 .58. Martinot-Lagarde on the far side,
:10:47. > :10:57.13.46, he is watching it, we are watching it. There you go. I am sure
:10:58. > :11:08.Andy Turner will be OK as the fastest loser. He will be through.
:11:09. > :11:11.Huge relief. He will be pleased that he got through that. This was the
:11:12. > :11:17.toughest of all the qualifying rounds for him. It was a good, solid
:11:18. > :11:33.run and he knew he would be up against it. You expect him to be
:11:34. > :11:42.scorching out there. It was important that and ran. -- that Andy
:11:43. > :11:47.Turner ran. Training is one thing. It is fantastic. But you need to be
:11:48. > :11:52.competitive on a regular basis, and this is one of the bigger bandages
:11:53. > :11:57.that will Sharman has had. He has been allowed to race in these big
:11:58. > :12:03.races, big competitions, where you can hold your technique under
:12:04. > :12:08.pressure, and Andy Turner has not have that -- had that. In the and,
:12:09. > :12:13.he was pretty solid in what he was doing, made a couple of mistakes,
:12:14. > :12:23.but he is big and big and strong and has one titles before. Well done.
:12:24. > :12:36.That little queue against Andy Turner's name it means he goes
:12:37. > :12:43.through as the fastest loser. For finer misses out on a place in the
:12:44. > :12:47.semifinals. Safely through in the end, but you are not quite sure what
:12:48. > :12:53.you needed to do, but you are through. This is a massive relief.
:12:54. > :13:02.The demons in my head have been going on. Standing on the starting
:13:03. > :13:10.line, you try and blanked it out. A freak incident plays on your mind.
:13:11. > :13:17.Training has been going well. I am just thrilled to bits to get that
:13:18. > :13:22.one out of the way. We ran your interview earlier. This is going to
:13:23. > :13:33.be your last major championship and you are retiring. You do not want
:13:34. > :13:36.this to be your last race Mr Mark -- last race? I just did not want to
:13:37. > :13:42.come here and not make the semifinal. If this is my last
:13:43. > :13:49.international championships, I want to go out running. My head held
:13:50. > :13:59.high. I'm just relieved, that is the main word. You obvious they can go
:14:00. > :14:07.much faster. You have got that kind of Gary first one out of the way. --
:14:08. > :14:13.scary one. I am thinking in my mind, don't mess it up. At least now I am
:14:14. > :14:18.going to the semifinal. If this is going to be my last race, I am going
:14:19. > :14:22.to go out fighting. We will see what happens tomorrow. We wish you all
:14:23. > :14:30.the best. Thank you. Hello, children!
:14:31. > :14:36.Really good news therefore Andy Turner. Great to see him again. A
:14:37. > :14:51.great performance from will Sharman, equaling that of Pascal. You can see
:14:52. > :14:58.Andy Turner going through as a fastest loser. Clark makes it three
:14:59. > :15:04.Britons into the semifinals. I have a tweet in that says, could Goldie
:15:05. > :15:13.Sayers speech be more important than we thought? I think for Andy Turner
:15:14. > :15:16.it was the demons, as he said, that is quite interesting, but we talked
:15:17. > :15:21.yesterday about the role of the captain, and sometimes it is the
:15:22. > :15:25.pearls of wisdom, the one line that someone says, that can really
:15:26. > :15:31.resonate with an individual, and it varies from her sent to prison, but
:15:32. > :15:38.if you make that connection, it can really inspire you. -- from person
:15:39. > :15:41.to person. As a whole, the GB team know they are in a good position
:15:42. > :15:48.right now. They have great sprinters. On the whole, it is in
:15:49. > :15:51.good shape, and as someone like Andy Turner, he just has to feed off
:15:52. > :15:57.that. He got through that hurdles race, which was a demon in his own
:15:58. > :16:03.mind, and you can look forward to the rest of the championship.
:16:04. > :16:07.Perhaps this is why he has called time, because he has some demons in
:16:08. > :16:11.his head and he can't see the wood for the trees. If you are not able
:16:12. > :16:21.to put into practice the things that you are training for all the time,
:16:22. > :16:25.year in, year out, you don't get the opportunity and it isn't fun, it
:16:26. > :16:33.really is not fun. I feel relieved that he is able to have his last
:16:34. > :16:39.memory not be on the Visio bed. He is able to come onto the track and
:16:40. > :16:43.race. The strap of the physiotherapy bed. You can leave the sport with
:16:44. > :16:51.his head -- the physiotherapy bed. You can leave the sport with your
:16:52. > :16:54.head held high. It is not hard to do something for the last time. No,
:16:55. > :16:58.because you're mind is slightly detached from the actual
:16:59. > :17:02.performance. People are always beating to you about your retirement
:17:03. > :17:08.and you are going to drift away and slow things down. I think he has got
:17:09. > :17:12.hold of his emotions. He did not want to go out on a bad note. He was
:17:13. > :17:22.running very carefully and that qualifying round. He was smiling and
:17:23. > :17:25.he was being cautious and clearing perhaps a centimetre higher than
:17:26. > :17:32.normal. He said he was going to give it some in the semifinal, and why
:17:33. > :17:37.not? The first event on the track earlier was the men's 100 hurdles.
:17:38. > :17:48.But find out what has been happening.
:17:49. > :18:02.This is the seventh event of ten, the discus. That is beyond 40
:18:03. > :18:14.metres. The rain has stopped, much to the delight of the discus
:18:15. > :18:17.throwers in this decathlon. A very large 47 metres plus throat, he has
:18:18. > :18:30.set the mark and is in the lead overall in the decathlon. Ashley
:18:31. > :18:36.Bryant, 41.49. Here is the men who led overnight, Kazmirek of Germany.
:18:37. > :18:50.Very strong Germans, and that is a really big throat. Kazmirek. -- big
:18:51. > :18:56.throw. He has a best of 44.77. He started the day over the hurdle
:18:57. > :19:01.shots with a 14.05 am and that is just shy of 45 metres. It is going
:19:02. > :19:07.to go down to the wire, no doubt about that. Three Germans in
:19:08. > :19:22.contention. Ashley Bryant looks like he is out of the medal this time. 43
:19:23. > :19:29.metres and 15 four Kazmirek. Good wit as he wound up. He used all of
:19:30. > :19:37.the link in his arms. The displacement from his upper and
:19:38. > :19:45.lower body. Was that close to 50 metres? If so, that -- it was good
:19:46. > :19:53.to see that displacement in the vertical plane beyond the 45 metre
:19:54. > :19:57.line, that far line. That is a big throw, and that might put him right
:19:58. > :20:10.back into contention. It was all about Kazmirek of Germany. But
:20:11. > :20:13.Freimuth is back with 14.81. Another men who is possibly just outside of
:20:14. > :20:26.contention and needs a big throw is Kasyanov of the Ukraine.
:20:27. > :20:33.I was talking to Daley Thompson the other week and he said don't talk
:20:34. > :20:47.about medals in the decathlons until after the pole vaulter. -- vault.
:20:48. > :20:55.He is about fourth or fifth place overall.
:20:56. > :21:09.Ready for the first heat of the women's 800 metres.
:21:10. > :21:30.Poistogova is very much the woman to BT. -- eat -- beat here.
:21:31. > :21:50.Away they go, two laps, Hinriksdottir with a rather ungainly
:21:51. > :22:14.start. Leonard settling in. Hinriksdottir,
:22:15. > :22:19.a percussionist talent really. World youth champion, junior champion, she
:22:20. > :22:25.has this theme of attacking the races from the start but really
:22:26. > :22:29.judged it badly for the world junior championships and went through far
:22:30. > :22:35.too fast on the first lap and was unable to finish. Alison Leonard
:22:36. > :22:45.settling into a very good position. The fact Del Buono did not start in
:22:46. > :22:53.this race... That affects the seedings of the heats. Hinriksdottir
:22:54. > :23:07.still out in front and Leonard in a good position. Poistogova, sitting
:23:08. > :23:12.on the outside. Three to go through from just six but they are all
:23:13. > :23:16.bunched together. Six quality athletes. Hinriksdottir still out in
:23:17. > :23:25.front, looking strong at the moment. Alison Leonard on her shoulder.
:23:26. > :23:27.Poistogova sitting in third place. Lindh trying to get back and Hynne
:23:28. > :23:42.hanging on the back. Poistogova cruising away. Lindh is
:23:43. > :23:49.trying to creep in. Alison Leonard is going to win this. Lindh, the
:23:50. > :23:52.Swede, comes through. From a British point of view, Alison Leonard
:23:53. > :23:58.running very through to go through to tomorrow's semifinals. A very
:23:59. > :24:02.good run from Allison, showing she belongs in this kind of setting.
:24:03. > :24:09.Which probably at the beginning of this year, she would not have
:24:10. > :24:13.thought. A very short run. She kept herself in the perfect position
:24:14. > :24:16.throughout the race. Tracking Hinriksdottir who about this stage
:24:17. > :24:21.of the race, is really starting to pay from having led so far. And does
:24:22. > :24:27.not have the strength in her legs to be up to continue the run.
:24:28. > :24:30.Hinriksdottir did not look that impressive to me out here. She
:24:31. > :24:44.wanted to challenge Alison Leonard and show she was there. Lindh
:24:45. > :24:50.pushing very strongly. Fedronic has been running well, she will have to
:24:51. > :24:59.wait for a fastest loser spot. Disappointing run for Fedronic. But
:25:00. > :25:03.Alison Leonard judging it very well. It was not likely to be a troubling
:25:04. > :25:09.race in terms of class, just six athletes in there. Alison Leonard
:25:10. > :25:15.coming through to take that and make sure of her place in the semifinals.
:25:16. > :25:39.They take place tomorrow. A good run from Alison Leonard to move through.
:25:40. > :25:44.There was a big smile on your face at the start, you have waited a long
:25:45. > :25:49.time for this and you did not waste the opportunity. I wanted to get
:25:50. > :25:53.through comfortably, no worries, just get through. You seemed
:25:54. > :26:11.credibly relaxed. Yes. The way you were able to secure your
:26:12. > :26:15.place, not only the trials, you had to chase the time and you got it
:26:16. > :26:21.when you needed to. It all comes to this point. I have had if you bad
:26:22. > :26:28.runs but it is all good. Well done today.
:26:29. > :26:39.Jessica Judd goes in the next heat. Del Buono did not run in that heat.
:26:40. > :26:43.The European Championship state that the provision of a medical
:26:44. > :26:46.certificate endorsed by medical officer is the only reason you can
:26:47. > :26:51.miss a road and come back and compete in subsequent rounds. Del
:26:52. > :26:56.Buono would have had to have a medical reason, a genuine one.
:26:57. > :26:58.Signed by a medical officer, for her to come back and compete in that
:26:59. > :27:08.1500 metres final on Friday night. Jessica Judd out on the track, I
:27:09. > :27:26.think the rain might have stopped. She will become the Commonwealth
:27:27. > :27:29.champion, silver for Scotland. Jess Judd, the 19-year-old, will have
:27:30. > :27:32.more medals to come, I know she will. It was soul destroying at the
:27:33. > :27:44.moment. 80 metres to go and my legs just
:27:45. > :27:47.died. When I came off I was really disappointed but I saw my family and
:27:48. > :27:53.my mum and dad have been really supportive. My boyfriend and
:27:54. > :28:19.everyone, they all ride behind me. I realised how good it was, to make a
:28:20. > :29:12.final at 19, it was not easy and I am proud of that. Do come forth is
:29:13. > :29:27.not as bad as I thought at the time. I would not have expected to have
:29:28. > :29:33.done that well. I try my best at the commonwealths and I tried to do the
:29:34. > :29:35.same here. Disappointment at the Commonwealth seems to be a bit of a
:29:36. > :29:56.theme at the moment. Jessica Judd, just 19 years of age
:29:57. > :29:57.and that fourth place was a very good performance given where she is
:29:58. > :30:32.in her career. actually. Out on the outside, a
:30:33. > :30:41.brilliant indoor performance from this athlete. Bigger indoors. Almost
:30:42. > :30:46.one eight medal. -- quicker indoors. She could be a danger here as well.
:30:47. > :31:05.First three to qualify. She is thinking she is just going to
:31:06. > :31:09.run out like she used too. Carefree. She looks as if she is heading to
:31:10. > :31:19.the front, which would not be a bad thing to do. If she is more relaxed,
:31:20. > :31:24.it is a big thing. I think I would like to see her go back to her
:31:25. > :31:29.running from her heart and trusting her instincts, because when she does
:31:30. > :31:34.that, she has a good racing instinct when she lets that happen. She seems
:31:35. > :31:38.to have more energy. Just enjoy it more. That is what she needs to be
:31:39. > :31:45.doing. She does not have to overthink it as well. This is not a
:31:46. > :32:01.bad thing. Get out in front, run a solid 400. Leading it through the
:32:02. > :32:08.belt. 58.79. The rest of the field is just tracking Jessica here. She
:32:09. > :32:11.wants to come here and make amends but she needs to just run the race
:32:12. > :32:26.and react to the people coming around here now -- her now. Just
:32:27. > :32:29.Judd is leading. -- Jessica Judd. Wide on the band. Digging it up a
:32:30. > :32:42.little bit. Still a bit of danger here. Buchel is staying close to the
:32:43. > :32:50.curb. Jessica just needs to push on. A bit of danger here! A think sheet
:32:51. > :32:59.might just about be all right. Keep rights to the line. Jessica Judd
:33:00. > :33:03.takes third spot. She goes through. Hard work, but the fact that she
:33:04. > :33:10.only got through by a yard or two, the fact that she let it, she had a
:33:11. > :33:15.good round, did not get messed up, has helped her qualify there. Hard
:33:16. > :33:22.work for Jessica Judd. She is through to the semifinals. It looks
:33:23. > :33:28.hard work for her and it looked easy for some of the other runners.
:33:29. > :33:36.Jessica ran that raised well. She put herself in the right position
:33:37. > :33:43.throughout and tried to react. Jessica at this point holds her
:33:44. > :33:48.competitors off. What was worrying me was the work -- look on her face,
:33:49. > :33:52.because she looks like she is starting to struggle a little bit.
:33:53. > :33:57.She feels that with what she missed in the winter that she is a little
:33:58. > :34:01.bit lacking on endurance and on finishing the race as well as she
:34:02. > :34:08.did last year. She is getting the support of the crowd. She was buoyed
:34:09. > :34:15.by the performance that she put in indoors as well. We can see from the
:34:16. > :34:19.front that Jessica just needs to stay relaxed at this point. She is
:34:20. > :34:33.focused, she does not look as though she is struggling. She finished with
:34:34. > :34:39.almost a 64, so the whole field is wondering why it looks so easy. It
:34:40. > :34:41.is because she was looking -- she wasn't looking across the screen
:34:42. > :34:48.will stop she was really cruising to the line. -- screen. She was really
:34:49. > :34:54.cruising to the line. Jessica is it through to the next round and she
:34:55. > :35:01.needs to focus on that. She is going to talk to us now.
:35:02. > :35:08.A really aggressive race. I am happy with that. I never feel good in the
:35:09. > :35:14.heat. My legs are a bit heavy, but by qualified. He got out there and
:35:15. > :35:20.took care of business. Lots of bumping and barging, you know -- you
:35:21. > :35:23.got out there and took care of business. Lots of bumping and
:35:24. > :35:28.barging, you never know what is going to happen. I went to the
:35:29. > :35:32.friend, I did not expect it to be that great. With 100 to go, I
:35:33. > :35:37.thought, have done this, and it was nice to get a run out and to be able
:35:38. > :35:46.to come back tomorrow. It steps up a gear tomorrow. I know I am in good
:35:47. > :35:50.shape. I just have to think everyone who picked me up after the
:35:51. > :35:55.Commonwealth Games. My mother and father, everyone, grandparents. I am
:35:56. > :35:59.just so happy to be here. We will just have to see what happens. We
:36:00. > :36:00.will wish you well for tomorrow and well done today.
:36:01. > :36:06.just have to see what happens. We will wish you well Thank you very
:36:07. > :36:09.much. -- we wish you well. Thank you very much. The second lap is always
:36:10. > :36:25.going to be a bit difficult. The winner made it look very easy
:36:26. > :36:32.indeed. This decathlon is getting very interesting indeed. Kazmirek of
:36:33. > :36:36.Germany is the event leader. Just inside, on the right-hand side, just
:36:37. > :36:43.missed the cage. It is a rally throw. Just inside the sector.
:36:44. > :36:49.Kazmirek led overnight. He is still in the lead, and he salvaged that
:36:50. > :37:13.throw. Expect him to go further than that. If that is anything to go by.
:37:14. > :37:19.3D all in contention for the medals. This men has been the most
:37:20. > :37:24.aggressive, as he is again. It makes you believe in him, doesn't it? He
:37:25. > :37:33.believes! Really imposing himself on this the capital on. It is going to
:37:34. > :37:39.go down to the wire. With the -- on the decathlon. Anything could happen
:37:40. > :37:47.as far as medal places. Many athletes are pushing through the
:37:48. > :37:59.6000 mark. Just over 6000 points, I would say, at this mark. That is
:38:00. > :38:07.world-class. A valid throw. Another men who will push through 6000
:38:08. > :38:13.points is Kasyanov. A long throw needed from the tall men, and it is
:38:14. > :38:27.a long throw. That will put him in contention. Three Germans. Kasyanov
:38:28. > :38:37.of the Ukraine uses his long limbs, essential for discus. Kasyanov
:38:38. > :38:43.certainly asking questions. Three events to come and he is right back
:38:44. > :38:50.in there. He has pushed through the 6000 mark as well with that throw,
:38:51. > :38:57.certainly. 47.96, a season best for the Ukrainian. And from there, we
:38:58. > :39:08.drift right into the next heat in the first round of the women's 800
:39:09. > :39:22.metres. Look out for the Russian in lane two. The Russians dominate in
:39:23. > :39:30.terms of the times this season in Europe. The Russian champion had not
:39:31. > :39:50.uttered before and then she broke in the final of the Russian
:39:51. > :39:59.championship. Rogozina was pushing hard in previous championships. Look
:40:00. > :40:09.out for a chase down of the first three finalists. The Ukrainian
:40:10. > :40:27.junior champion Albert in lane eight. Macro coming to the front. A
:40:28. > :40:31.little look across. Rogozina is only 21. A little bit of an experience in
:40:32. > :40:41.the championship races. Write down the back straight. Macro is now
:40:42. > :41:05.controlling the race from the front. Her best time, just outside
:41:06. > :41:16.two minutes. The Spanish champion has come through as well. Rogozina
:41:17. > :41:23.and Lamote looking fairly comfortable just now. Moving on the
:41:24. > :41:34.outside there, and trying to make up a little bit of ground before they
:41:35. > :41:38.reach the bend. Rogozina looks like she might be leading them into the
:41:39. > :41:50.home straight. Lamote is hanging in there. The Romanian is still in
:41:51. > :41:53.there as well. Lamote had to maintain that pace. Rogozina just
:41:54. > :42:02.having a look around and making sure she is doing what she needs to do.
:42:03. > :42:11.It is a window for the Russian. Not as quick as the first heat with
:42:12. > :42:16.Alison Leonard. No, not as quick as the first two heats. The first three
:42:17. > :42:18.from each of these races goes directly through to the next round
:42:19. > :42:34.with the fourth fastest losers. The Romanian girl just came through
:42:35. > :42:37.on the inside. A desperate search here and then she realised she might
:42:38. > :42:43.have a little bit more left in her legs than she thought. She
:42:44. > :42:47.comfortably was in the third qualifying position. Lamote also
:42:48. > :43:17.looking smooth. Here is another look at the discus.
:43:18. > :43:25.Oh, a good throw again! Shalt it all the way out. It is very close for
:43:26. > :43:32.the medals as it is getting to the final stages, it would seem. It all
:43:33. > :43:36.comes down to Javelin and 400 metres, and every centimetre counts
:43:37. > :43:44.and is a discus. A second-round attempt. He is looking to improve on
:43:45. > :43:53.that, just to sneak a few more points in the bag. Just to confirm
:43:54. > :43:59.that distance, 43 points 25, a slight improvement. Confirmation of
:44:00. > :44:00.the result of that and ultimate heat in the first-round of the 800
:44:01. > :44:18.metres. One more heats to go in those 800
:44:19. > :44:26.metres qualifications -- qualifications, with Lindsay Sharp.
:44:27. > :44:35.Quite contrasting qualifications. Alison Leonard, for someone who
:44:36. > :44:40.doesn't have championship experience, she did raise with an
:44:41. > :44:45.excellent racing brain and she seemed like she belonged in this
:44:46. > :44:51.environment. It is good to see her making the most of this opportunity.
:44:52. > :44:58.No qualification time in the UK trials. You can almost imagine
:44:59. > :45:05.like, I got there, but she has not managed to maintain that level. This
:45:06. > :45:09.has enhanced her performance because she has acted herself to enjoy the
:45:10. > :45:15.whole atmosphere. The 800 metre is very different to every event. It is
:45:16. > :45:20.very controlled in what you have to do, because you have to make
:45:21. > :45:25.decisions at quite a fast speed, which is quite unusual, so for me,
:45:26. > :45:29.it has been a shining example to what you can do if you have good
:45:30. > :45:34.preparation all the way through. The second judge, breathing very
:45:35. > :45:41.heavily. That was tough. -- Jessica Judd. I worry about her because she
:45:42. > :45:44.seems fragile out there sometimes and they think that is because of
:45:45. > :45:47.the issues she has had, and she knows that when she puts her foot
:45:48. > :45:55.sometimes down it might not be there. She made a decision early,
:45:56. > :45:58.got out of trouble, saw of people trip up and get into trouble
:45:59. > :46:03.yesterday, so she did the right thing there, and it was a difficult
:46:04. > :46:06.-- difficult qualification but another quote occasion and
:46:07. > :46:19.nonetheless. Let's hear from Lindsay Sharp.
:46:20. > :46:27.It seems like ages ago but it was important to me to enjoy myself.
:46:28. > :46:31.Experiencing the Commonwealth Games at home in Glasgow. The emotion
:46:32. > :46:37.people saw in my interview probably summed up my year. Every single
:46:38. > :46:42.hurdle I have had in the last year, right down to the moment I won that
:46:43. > :46:48.medal in Glasgow. Probably why it was so emotional.
:46:49. > :47:03.I found this year, I can only really think about what the next races. --
:47:04. > :47:06.race is. I think it is difficult, people probably do not expect a
:47:07. > :47:10.defending champion to still be in the picture for the next
:47:11. > :47:15.championships. So I am really grateful I am here. And in a good
:47:16. > :47:21.position and ranked really highly so I can push for a medal. Defending
:47:22. > :47:24.champion but in controversial circumstances occurs the Russian who
:47:25. > :47:32.beat her in Helsinki then got disqualified. I think she might feel
:47:33. > :47:36.she has something to prove but it does help she has had an amazing
:47:37. > :47:39.experience at the Commonwealth Games and that will elevate her. She will
:47:40. > :47:44.look at the list and think she has a good chance. She has had a good
:47:45. > :47:49.season. She has a lot of confidence and that is what you need. To raise
:47:50. > :47:57.these rounds with these girls, you have got to be in for the fight.
:47:58. > :48:00.Confidence, a medal, Steve Cram, a medal would be the best thing in
:48:01. > :48:04.terms of recovery because that was a tough race. Both the semifinals and
:48:05. > :48:08.the finals of the Commonwealth Games. South if nothing else, it
:48:09. > :48:15.showed she has that strength of mind.
:48:16. > :48:21.It is about every time you start on the starting man, start again, put
:48:22. > :48:29.everything out of your head and do everything possible.
:48:30. > :48:54.This is the last heat, a pretty good one as well.
:48:55. > :48:58.Stambolova served a drug ban, I remember her coming out of nowhere
:48:59. > :49:09.and winning. Stambolova has won a personal best
:49:10. > :49:21.on three occasions already this year.
:49:22. > :49:31.From Luxembourg, Matyas. A personal best of just outside two minutes and
:49:32. > :49:33.two seconds. Last year, this young lady ran really well at the world
:49:34. > :50:06.student games. I know that Masna will run really
:50:07. > :50:10.well against Lynsey Sharp. Lynsey Sharp got a good start. She will not
:50:11. > :50:16.want to lead, it is not her way. She will want to watch what others get
:50:17. > :50:19.up to and trust her strength in the home straight. She will probably
:50:20. > :50:25.just come across and leave that inside lane open and she does.
:50:26. > :50:40.Reluctant leaders, nobody wanting to take it through. They will all trust
:50:41. > :50:48.their kick. If there was a natural frontrunner... Massenet really fell
:50:49. > :50:57.into the trap Lynsey Sharp set, leaving that inside lane open.
:50:58. > :51:05.We see the remaining athletes come through and try to challenge Lynsey
:51:06. > :51:13.Sharp. An unusual position, this, for Lynsey Sharp. She knows she is
:51:14. > :51:20.good in the home straight. Massenet will cover. Three will go through. I
:51:21. > :51:25.don't think there is too much cheer for Lynsey Sharp to worry about,
:51:26. > :51:29.just hold that position, strong in the home straight. I would not be
:51:30. > :51:37.surprised if these three glide away from the rest. They are the
:51:38. > :51:43.favourites. It now becomes four of them in with a chance. Stambolova
:51:44. > :51:50.thinking she have to pick things up here. Lynsey Sharp controlling this
:51:51. > :52:00.as she once, looking good. Just keep running to the line when you -- and
:52:01. > :52:05.you can ease off when you get to it. Pretty mature performance from
:52:06. > :52:10.Lynsey Sharp. Got off early and sat on the leader's shoulder and then
:52:11. > :52:13.moved to the front wishy sets a bit of danger and had more than anybody
:52:14. > :52:21.else and plenty in reserve in the home straight. Just always a worry,
:52:22. > :52:25.when athletes ease back too much. Exactly, what she is struggling to
:52:26. > :52:31.do here, the big screen here is actually quite small and quite high
:52:32. > :52:35.up, she glanced and she could not see it, but she needed to keep
:52:36. > :52:40.moving because Stambolova had already almost lost out. She managed
:52:41. > :52:44.to spot the challenge coming wide and she moved wide around and in the
:52:45. > :52:49.end, it was Masna who paid the price and was run out. We will have to
:52:50. > :52:52.wait and see for the times, whether to seek if she will make it of the
:52:53. > :53:05.fastest loser but I think she will. I think that was a really good run
:53:06. > :53:11.from Lynsey Sharp. You want to see them developing their confidence.
:53:12. > :53:15.She finished second two years ago but eventually with the drug
:53:16. > :53:16.disqualification, became the champion and she started her defence
:53:17. > :53:44.really well. Sintinicolaas is a very good pole
:53:45. > :54:01.vaulter. Watch out for him. It was all very close in the end in
:54:02. > :54:11.that 800-metre fourth heat. Lynsey Sharp and Stambolova, I think a lot
:54:12. > :54:16.more left in both of them. Masna will go through as a fastest loser.
:54:17. > :54:24.All three British women through to the semifinals. Which is good to see
:54:25. > :54:25.and hear and let tidied that up and then hopefully we will hear from
:54:26. > :54:54.Lynsey Sharp in a second. What an accomplishment, it is great
:54:55. > :54:58.honour for you to defend your title. I was excited to get back here and
:54:59. > :55:06.compete. Largo is not that long ago but it feels like ages ago. --
:55:07. > :55:09.Glasgow is not that long ago. You find yourself at the front and you
:55:10. > :55:15.were able to control the race from there. That was not really the plan
:55:16. > :55:19.but I just got out the first 200 like I usually do and I find myself
:55:20. > :55:25.at the front. It was quite fun to run from the front for change. Using
:55:26. > :55:31.to be in imperious form. After the Commonwealth Games and coming away
:55:32. > :55:39.with a medal, do you feel there is even a greater strength here? I was
:55:40. > :55:43.not in as good shape as I am now in 2012. Onwards and upwards. All the
:55:44. > :55:52.best for tomorrow. A beautiful shot of the Letzigrund
:55:53. > :56:09.Stadium. Everybody from the British point of
:56:10. > :56:15.view, good news, getting through. Lynsey Sharp, supreme. It was a
:56:16. > :56:19.commanding performance from her. Effortless piece of running, great
:56:20. > :56:25.racing brain, tactically aware. At all stages. The guys in the
:56:26. > :56:28.commentary don't quite like the looking around which we know is
:56:29. > :56:35.dangerous. The cost positions are won and lost. People don't make the
:56:36. > :56:42.finals by easing off too much. But I thought she looked really good. She
:56:43. > :56:45.would never have competed against some of these acted but you seem to
:56:46. > :56:49.be able to handle the situation with them very well. All of those
:56:50. > :56:53.questions about whether she would recover, the emotion, the sickness
:56:54. > :56:58.she had, could have taken a lot out of her but no sign of that. She had
:56:59. > :57:04.obviously whether that storm going into the Commonwealth Games. She had
:57:05. > :57:09.a couple of weeks to raise her game, the excitement of winning, the
:57:10. > :57:13.relief, and it left her on an upbeat cloud. Let's start to look forward
:57:14. > :57:19.to this evening because it is really a big night here in the stadium. Men
:57:20. > :57:24.and women's 100 metres. I glanced down at those finals and I thought
:57:25. > :57:28.the semifinals would be tasty enough. It will be a really exciting
:57:29. > :57:35.evening of sprinting from the women sprint hurdles as well. An exciting
:57:36. > :57:39.moment for us all. Who will you call? France versus the UK on every
:57:40. > :57:48.single level. We also have genuine medal prospects. Questions over
:57:49. > :57:57.certain people's fitness perhaps? We will have to wait and see. There are
:57:58. > :58:38.always rumours. He looked pretty impressive to me yesterday.
:58:39. > :58:47.Tonight, all eyes will be on Mo Farah. A lot of questions Dancevic,
:58:48. > :58:51.will he be able do it? -- a lot of questions to answer.
