:00:55. > :01:05.He needs to find the finish line. He is now the world record-holder in
:01:06. > :01:08.the 50 kilometre walk. Brilliant finish. Completely destroyed the
:01:09. > :01:13.field. Is Martyn Rooney strong enough to
:01:14. > :01:20.hang on? It is going to be close out the line. It's been a long time
:01:21. > :01:27.coming, to win championships. I am pretty happy. The women's 1,500m has
:01:28. > :01:39.certainly got the best athletes in the world. Trying to chased the two
:01:40. > :01:43.best in the world. Absolutely brilliant from Laura. He has been
:01:44. > :01:51.fantastic on the board this year. That will do, qualifying. Johnny
:01:52. > :01:58.Williams with a lot to do -- Joanne Williams with a lot to do. No one is
:01:59. > :02:01.going to touch the Dutch athlete. I am so happy to come away with two
:02:02. > :02:12.medals at a senior. I couldn't ask for any more. Husein has called for
:02:13. > :02:23.Switzerland at the 400m hurdles. -- gold. Gemili will run a better bend
:02:24. > :02:30.than Christophe Lemaitre. Adam Gemili has got two metres on the
:02:31. > :02:36.field. It is gold for great Britain. Sub 20, to win the European
:02:37. > :02:40.Championships. Simply superb. European champion was something that
:02:41. > :02:45.was a big target to me and to go and achieve it, I am really happy.
:02:46. > :02:49.Good morning to you, welcome to the penultimate day of the European
:02:50. > :02:54.athletics Championships. The stadium may be empty, it is the women's
:02:55. > :02:58.marathon this morning, but if you listen carefully, you can hear the
:02:59. > :03:01.echoes of the cheering British fans after another amazing night. Paula
:03:02. > :03:06.Radcliffe, it was stunning from start to finish. It was, to see
:03:07. > :03:11.Martyn Rooney, and do everything he has been through, to come back and
:03:12. > :03:15.get that title was really special. It was great to see Laura and Jody
:03:16. > :03:20.come through and Matthew Hudson-Smith as well, and for Adam
:03:21. > :03:27.to round it off with our 100th gold at this Championships and the sub 20
:03:28. > :03:30.he was after. In what were pretty miserable conditions, rain and
:03:31. > :03:33.strong headwind, you might have mattered little wonder what he might
:03:34. > :03:42.have run in better conditions. -- you might wonder. We heard last
:03:43. > :03:48.night that the track feels not so fast when it is wet, so there could
:03:49. > :03:53.be more to come. Ian Black said the medal haul would be between
:03:54. > :03:59.Barcelona and Helsinki. Potentially, Britain is on course for its best
:04:00. > :04:07.ever European Championships. It is going really well and a lot of that
:04:08. > :04:10.is due to the fact that the athletes didn't peak for the two major
:04:11. > :04:17.championships before and the first day went as well as it did, setting
:04:18. > :04:22.the other athletes on a roll, Jo Pavey, Andy Vernon coming out, and
:04:23. > :04:27.the other is saying, I can do that as well. 19 medals from Barcelona,
:04:28. > :04:32.the greatest ever total, nine golds, and at the moment, we are on
:04:33. > :04:38.six and 13 and still chances to come. We had chances in the relay,
:04:39. > :04:46.some chances in the women's 800m, we have Eilidh Child in the 400, the
:04:47. > :04:51.long jump. As we said, the women's marathon, no Brits, but a good
:04:52. > :04:55.reason for that. We don't have huge depth on the marathon side on either
:04:56. > :04:59.the men or the women's site, but it is largely due to the fact that the
:05:00. > :05:06.athletes prefer to go to the Commonwealth Games. The contenders
:05:07. > :05:10.shortly, but first, Paula has been out and about on the cause, this is
:05:11. > :05:18.what it looks like. -- the course.
:05:19. > :05:24.Here we are at the start and finish area of the marathon. The most
:05:25. > :05:27.important thing for the athlete is that they come in well prepared
:05:28. > :05:32.physically, but also mentally, so they will have taken the chance to
:05:33. > :05:37.look at the course profile, which shows the inclines and declines in
:05:38. > :05:41.the course, and the general layout. This is a loop course, which means
:05:42. > :05:46.they run a two kilometre loop at the beginning and then four laps of ten
:05:47. > :05:50.kilometres each. Generally, we talk about marathon runners following the
:05:51. > :05:55.blue line. Here in Z?rich, because of the championship colours, it is
:05:56. > :06:00.purple, but it is essentially the same thing, the shortest line of the
:06:01. > :06:04.cause, taking the best tangents. Here, I am not sure we will see that
:06:05. > :06:09.many runners running close to the gutter, as it is right on the edge.
:06:10. > :06:13.It will be particularly testing because of the cobbles. As we have
:06:14. > :06:18.seen so far, the weather can change suddenly, and if it does rain, this
:06:19. > :06:23.area will become more testing and more slippery. As well as the
:06:24. > :06:26.cobbles, another potential hazard in this course are the tramlines, which
:06:27. > :06:30.they have to run along it numerous times and cross a lot of times. We
:06:31. > :06:35.have been told they may fill the tramlines with a banana leaf
:06:36. > :06:39.substance, just to fill the hole a little bit and lessening the danger
:06:40. > :06:43.of turning your ankle or slipping on the metal. This is probably the
:06:44. > :06:46.toughest climb of the cause and the runners will need to negotiate is
:06:47. > :06:53.four times, climbing up to the highest point of the cause, by the
:06:54. > :06:55.University. The hilly nature of the course will certainly suited the
:06:56. > :07:04.tougher athletes. We have some information that the Swiss may have
:07:05. > :07:08.designed this course is for their champion in Barcelona. The hills and
:07:09. > :07:12.climbs only make it tougher for the athletes as they go up, but also, of
:07:13. > :07:19.course, they have to come down, which means a lot of the centric
:07:20. > :07:23.loading on the thigh muscles. By the third or fourth time up this hill,
:07:24. > :07:27.it will really be starting to herd, so we could well see an attack being
:07:28. > :07:36.made on the third order for up this help. This is the point where the
:07:37. > :07:40.runners enter the Chinese gardens. Just before that term, they will
:07:41. > :07:46.take a drinks station, ten kilometres, 20 kilometres, 30 and 40
:07:47. > :07:49.kilometres drinks stations. So they have to negotiate taking a drink and
:07:50. > :07:55.then quickly making bad turn into this fairly narrow area. It should
:07:56. > :08:00.be OK, it is a small field, given it is a championship race, and by the
:08:01. > :08:03.time they get to 20 kilometres, it will have thinned out but we could
:08:04. > :08:10.see some jostling for position as they make this sharp term. This is
:08:11. > :08:13.the Chinese garden area. There are a couple of points they where they
:08:14. > :08:18.have to cut across the grass but as long as it is not really wet, it
:08:19. > :08:22.shouldn't be a problem. This is a tough course but I do think it is
:08:23. > :08:26.also a beautiful course. The fact that there are different areas, with
:08:27. > :08:30.the hills and the climbs and this garden area, means it breaks it up
:08:31. > :08:37.for the runners and should make in enjoyable to run as well. -- make
:08:38. > :08:41.it. If I don't get to go around the whole course, one thing that is key
:08:42. > :08:45.is to jog over all walk over the last 600 metres of the race, to make
:08:46. > :08:51.sure I know it really well. Should it come down to a sprint, I want to
:08:52. > :08:56.tie my efforts to perfection and now every last bump in the last couple
:08:57. > :08:59.of hundred metres. This course could be particularly interesting, because
:09:00. > :09:03.the runners are going to drop down the hill and only see the finish
:09:04. > :09:06.pretty late on. They will know it, because they will have already run
:09:07. > :09:10.this section but it makes sense to know they will be coming down the
:09:11. > :09:16.hill, over the brow of the bridge and it will be a short run into the
:09:17. > :09:18.finish and they have the time that perfectly.
:09:19. > :09:22.That was Paula taking her life in her hands to produce that course
:09:23. > :09:29.guide. Don't say the Swiss don't have a sense of humour, running
:09:30. > :09:32.across grass in the middle of a major marathon? A lot of runners
:09:33. > :09:36.will be used to that, they probably train in parks like that. The danger
:09:37. > :09:40.is with the weather having been as wet as it is, all of the runners
:09:41. > :09:47.tracking across that, by the fourth track it is mud. Steve Cram is going
:09:48. > :09:50.to be commentating on this with Paula and Brendan Foster and he is
:09:51. > :09:58.standing by. Who are the ones to look out for?
:09:59. > :10:03.I am not sure there are any outstanding favourites. There is a
:10:04. > :10:07.lot of experience. You will remember the Championships last year, Straneo
:10:08. > :10:13.getting an unexpected medal and like Jo Pavey, she is at the end of her
:10:14. > :10:17.career, 38 years of age, she could run well. The familiar Gaymon
:10:18. > :10:25.Abeylegesse the old turkey, who has won medals -- name of Abeylegesse
:10:26. > :10:30.the turkey, who has won medals, but I am not sure about her fitness. The
:10:31. > :10:40.new there are a couple of Russians in
:10:41. > :10:43.there who may do well, although the Russians have not been running well
:10:44. > :10:54.at all. But watch out for these three. The triplets from Estonia.
:10:55. > :10:59.The Luik triplets. I like these young three, they share my birthday,
:11:00. > :11:08.October 14. Are they any good at running? I am not sure. But is great
:11:09. > :11:13.to see them, triplets in the marathon. They could make up their
:11:14. > :11:16.own team, because you need three to count for the European cup
:11:17. > :11:21.competition, the team competition, as well as an individual one.
:11:22. > :11:26.Interesting Swiss athlete, people may remember her from 2012, winning
:11:27. > :11:40.the triathlon, Nicola Spirig. Yes, like last night -- last night, with
:11:41. > :11:47.Hussein, the Swiss had something to cheer about, and I am sure she will
:11:48. > :11:50.get a lot of support. There is a triathlon here every year, it is
:11:51. > :11:55.quite famous as a triathlon venue, and she can come here and soak up
:11:56. > :11:59.the atmosphere and hope she can have a great day, but anything can happen
:12:00. > :12:04.in the marathon, particularly championship marathons. Paula knows
:12:05. > :12:09.that better than anyone else. So someone like they could come here
:12:10. > :12:20.and have a great day, and who knows? We also have the defending
:12:21. > :12:26.champion, Incerti of Italy, and the person who was disqualified,
:12:27. > :12:31.Balciunaite. Yes, the women's site, like other parts of athletics, has
:12:32. > :12:38.had issues with people cheap method laid cheating, and Balciunaite is
:12:39. > :12:43.back -- people cheating, but she is back, not a lot of people will be
:12:44. > :12:45.happy, but she is back. She is the defending champion, Incerti, I don't
:12:46. > :12:51.know what kind of reception Balciunaite will get. The marathon
:12:52. > :13:01.will be of very shortly. We have seen Paula's course guide, and here
:13:02. > :13:05.is my guide to Zurich. Zurich may well be one of the
:13:06. > :13:14.world's leading financial hubs, but there is much more to this place
:13:15. > :13:18.than Swiss francs and tax breaks. With a population of under half a
:13:19. > :13:21.million, those lucky enough to live here enjoy some of the highest
:13:22. > :13:30.living standards anywhere in the world, regularly voted one of the
:13:31. > :13:35.best places to make home. This easy living lifestyle is helped along by
:13:36. > :13:39.one of the best public transport systems anywhere in the world.
:13:40. > :13:43.Trams, it seems, are the way to go and if they're gentle hum doesn't do
:13:44. > :13:50.it for you, there is always pedal power. The odd supercar isn't a
:13:51. > :14:01.rarity here either. I will have that one. A pub on every corner in
:14:02. > :14:06.Britain, so they say and in Zurich, it is a bank, and that is only a
:14:07. > :14:09.little exaggeration. This is a city that attracts the great and the good
:14:10. > :14:16.to both spend and save their money in equal measure. And, of course, no
:14:17. > :14:18.visit to Switzerland is complete without a taste of its famous
:14:19. > :14:31.chocolate. Are you jealous, Colin? In keeping with a country renowned
:14:32. > :14:41.for its timekeeping, Zurich boasts the biggest clock face in Europe. So
:14:42. > :14:48.as we have seen, this city loves its athletics and the Liexigrund Stadium
:14:49. > :14:59.is where the best one-day meeting in the world is held each year, and one
:15:00. > :15:04.I have fond memories of. A lovely city, but flight entertainment there
:15:05. > :15:08.and now it is the serious action, it is time for the women's marathon --
:15:09. > :15:21.but light entertainment. The marathon is setting in off in
:15:22. > :15:26.cool conditions. A bit of a wet and drizzly day. We have had some heavy
:15:27. > :15:32.showers. The temperature is pretty good for marathon running and it is
:15:33. > :15:37.not very windy. We have had some pretty breezy days. It is pretty
:15:38. > :15:46.calm. Not a bad day to run a marathon. We had excellent guides
:15:47. > :15:52.from Paula and Jonathan and that will give you a bit of an idea of
:15:53. > :16:00.the geography. We will enjoy the next few hours. Paula is here and so
:16:01. > :16:09.is Brendan. I think Jonathan's bit about the chocolate was the
:16:10. > :16:16.highlight their! A small field, good conditions for running this morning.
:16:17. > :16:54.A beautiful city, running along the lake in Zurich. There is 21-macro.
:16:55. > :16:57.-- Jessica Augusto. There is the triathlon champion. Nicola Spirig.
:16:58. > :17:03.The calibre of these athletes, in terms of running, obviously they are
:17:04. > :17:08.the best in Europe and I remember back in 1982, it was the European
:17:09. > :17:17.Championships that led the way, the first ever women's marathon in the
:17:18. > :17:26.Championship was in Athens them. It was a fantastic marathon. The winner
:17:27. > :17:33.won it in two hours. Marathon running has come a long way,
:17:34. > :17:49.spearheaded by the young lady sitting with me, Paula Radcliffe.
:17:50. > :18:00.She was a fantastic athlete. Records are supposed to keep progressing.
:18:01. > :18:08.She was a huge trailblazer in the same way that Ingrid Kristiansen
:18:09. > :18:19.followed on. They were role models for me and a lot of other athletes.
:18:20. > :18:25.That excellent course guide from Paula will give you a little bit of
:18:26. > :18:29.geography. There is a big lap and a small lap, the small lap is to make
:18:30. > :18:36.up the distance, the big lap is ten kilometres. They will take a left
:18:37. > :18:41.turn up here, most of our studio team have been doing their shopping
:18:42. > :18:53.there, that some very nice shops there. Winter clothing has been high
:18:54. > :18:57.on the list. Apparently it is the wealthiest shopping street in the
:18:58. > :19:11.whole of Europe. You and Paul have spent a lot of time there. A lot of
:19:12. > :19:20.expensive shops. This is the street where Oprah Winfrey had a big
:19:21. > :19:26.argument in a shop. They told her that she could not afford a handbag,
:19:27. > :19:33.they did not realise who she was. I think it was a $30,000 handbag. Who
:19:34. > :19:39.knew those sort of things existed? Oprah Winfrey basically told the
:19:40. > :19:45.world that he did not like Zurich. This is one of the sections of the
:19:46. > :19:58.course that athletes have to negotiate a lot of tramlines on.
:19:59. > :20:05.Probably you will not see too many athletes getting close to the metal
:20:06. > :20:10.to have any danger of slipping. On tired legs, however, it makes it
:20:11. > :20:17.more treacherous, as Saint -- the same as the cobbles. There are
:20:18. > :20:23.twists and turns. There are the hills, the cobbles, the tramlines,
:20:24. > :20:29.lots of little turns and bends, places where you could use to make
:20:30. > :20:37.breaks, but also it will be more taxing on the legs. There is the
:20:38. > :20:41.church, they are crossing the river. They will turn right and go back to
:20:42. > :20:46.the start here and then another smaller loop and eventually they
:20:47. > :20:51.will be back here before they start off on an extremely difficult part
:20:52. > :20:57.of the course, where they turn left next time around. I was pleased to
:20:58. > :21:02.hear that they did not have those banana things you were talking about
:21:03. > :21:11.in the tramlines, because I thought bananas were slippy! You to! It is
:21:12. > :21:18.road made from a banana, from believe this, I do not know -- two.
:21:19. > :21:30.They could stop as they get hungry and take some extra carbohydrates on
:21:31. > :21:49.board. It would still be slippy because of the metal. I think the
:21:50. > :22:00.course where they are running, where they turn right, they must be there.
:22:01. > :22:06.I will look for it the banana rope. There are two of the triplets going
:22:07. > :22:12.through the picture. There are in the background, the lake, the scene
:22:13. > :22:18.of a big triathlon here, once a year, everyone jumps into that lake,
:22:19. > :22:22.pretty much everyone in the city. You're not allowed to swim down the
:22:23. > :22:31.central section and I think there is once a year... Why are you tapping
:22:32. > :22:38.me on the leg? 400,000 people live in Zurich! Tens of thousands of them
:22:39. > :22:43.do it. They all float down the lake. These two are setting off. It
:22:44. > :22:51.will be a hard morning. In the early stages, I did not mention, Jessica
:22:52. > :22:57.Augusto is very well-known to long-distance fans, she could have
:22:58. > :23:02.run the 10,000 metres as well, I guess, but chose to continue in her
:23:03. > :23:08.marathon career and she will be a big contender. Definitely. There is
:23:09. > :23:15.a team race here as well. I think Portugal and Italy will the front
:23:16. > :23:20.runners with the likes of Jessica Augusto and the Portuguese runner.
:23:21. > :23:30.The Italians have the silver medallist from last year. We can see
:23:31. > :23:39.the Turkish athlete there. She is the European record-holder, Elvan
:23:40. > :23:46.Abeylegesse. She has not had the results to match in the marathon. We
:23:47. > :23:54.will see what she can do today. The Italian team, it includes Anna in
:23:55. > :23:58.certainly, a strong team. -- and Anita Smith. There is Christelle
:23:59. > :24:16.Daunay. I think she has a good opportunity -- Anna Incerti. These
:24:17. > :24:20.cool conditions, much better than they might have expected in Zurich
:24:21. > :24:25.in August. They have been blessed with the weather, when they were
:24:26. > :24:31.planning for this event, August in Zurich, it can be really warm. They
:24:32. > :24:36.are setting out at nine a.m., which is not too early. They would have
:24:37. > :24:57.probably wanted to start earlier -- nine o'clock. It is a fairly strong
:24:58. > :25:12.field. He has a scarf on! : Jackson has been dressing the Lithuanian
:25:13. > :25:21.team! -- Colin Jackson. We have been through the start and finish area
:25:22. > :25:26.and after completing that short lap, we are coming down this street again
:25:27. > :25:38.on the big lap, ten kilometres, each lap and it is pretty full of twists
:25:39. > :25:43.and turns. Elvan Abeylegesse tucked in the middle. Real question marks
:25:44. > :25:47.about her fitness. Not everyone makes the transition from the track
:25:48. > :25:52.to the marathon and we have seen a Mo Farah in his first marathon not
:25:53. > :25:55.going as well as he would have liked and Elvan Abeylegesse has not been
:25:56. > :26:00.able to run as fast as you think she would be able to. I wonder if she is
:26:01. > :26:05.coping with that move, whether or not she has been able to prepare for
:26:06. > :26:12.this raise as much as she would like. She dropped out of a marathon
:26:13. > :26:17.earlier in the year -- race. You need a couple of positive ones early
:26:18. > :26:23.in your career. She took time out to have a baby. I think she had a baby
:26:24. > :26:30.girl in 2011 and then move to the marathon. I think she has struggled,
:26:31. > :26:37.unlike Jo Pavey, she has struggled to get back into training. She has
:26:38. > :26:40.not really made that transition. She made the mistake of thinking of
:26:41. > :26:46.moving to the marathon and it would be easier. I do not think that has
:26:47. > :26:55.translated very well. Incidentally, I am not sure if we will see, but
:26:56. > :27:18.the Croatian athlete leading is actually another athlete who just
:27:19. > :27:23.got married. She is one to watch. Fibula Britain is in her first
:27:24. > :27:40.marathon, but she is one who could figure -- 70 macro. -- Fionnuala
:27:41. > :27:48.Britton. There was controversy over her selection. A late decision to
:27:49. > :27:57.put her in. She decided late on that she wanted to compete. There is
:27:58. > :28:05.Sabrina Mockenhaupt. Others who tried to make a selection... There
:28:06. > :28:10.was controversy. There was a couple of weeks before it that Fionnuala
:28:11. > :28:23.Britton decided she wanted to make her debut. She did not have a
:28:24. > :28:30.qualifying time. They drafted in another girl from her training group
:28:31. > :28:35.to make up the team, it was Sarah Mulligan. There are other athletes
:28:36. > :28:41.in Ireland who were understandably a little bit miffed to find out they
:28:42. > :28:47.were not mentioned. She can get rid of that by running well today. She
:28:48. > :28:51.is at the back of the group. She is more accomplished at cross country.
:28:52. > :28:55.She has been the European champion on a couple of occasions. It is
:28:56. > :28:59.sensible for her to move to the marathon, eventually she will be a
:29:00. > :29:06.good marathon runner. She will get clues about it today. It will be a
:29:07. > :29:10.steady race, she is good up the hills. She has got a chance, because
:29:11. > :29:19.the apps are significant and the downs will be difficult as well. --
:29:20. > :29:22.ups. Fionnuala Britton reminds me of another runner who had an
:29:23. > :29:27.outstanding career in the cross-country and marathon. I think
:29:28. > :29:35.that Fionnuala Britton is a strong athlete and I have seen her training
:29:36. > :29:39.quite a bit. She does already a lot of mileage in training and I think
:29:40. > :29:42.it is a logical step for her to move to the marathon. It is a different
:29:43. > :29:49.way to make your debut, but it is a good one and it could work out well
:29:50. > :30:00.for her. They are starting on the first of the long lapse. The group
:30:01. > :30:08.are settling down, nice numbers in that group -- long lapse. A very
:30:09. > :30:15.strong Italian distance runner who has excelled and has decided that
:30:16. > :30:19.she would run from the position of leading. She did that extremely well
:30:20. > :30:36.in the World Championships, Valeria Straneo. The crowds are starting to
:30:37. > :30:48.build, which is good to see, despite the inclement weather for spectator
:30:49. > :30:51.in. I still can't see any rope in those tramlines. That is not fair,
:30:52. > :30:56.because we have done a lot of homework on that rope! It was used
:30:57. > :31:02.in the walks. Maybe it is just in the walk section, the two kilometre
:31:03. > :31:07.section. I have been watching for the last ten minutes, trying to find
:31:08. > :31:10.that rope. I have given up now, I am just going to let the athletes run
:31:11. > :31:17.through the streets on the tramlines. To be fair to the
:31:18. > :31:22.organiser, can you imagine walking around trying to put it in before
:31:23. > :31:26.the athletes come there? They use a big wheel, have you not seen the
:31:27. > :31:31.pictures? They normally only do it for the royalty, we should have told
:31:32. > :31:37.them that Lord Brendan Foster was here and all of the rope would have
:31:38. > :31:43.been laid out. That is a magnificent church. It is, that little hill to
:31:44. > :31:54.the left does well is the old part of the town, the heart of old
:31:55. > :31:59.Zurich, and Lyndon -- the hilly side on the other side of the river. And
:32:00. > :32:07.the other famous church, the Grossmunster, and the only thing I
:32:08. > :32:16.used to know about Zurich when I used to come was Felix and
:32:17. > :32:25.irregular. The Grossmunster is built where the patron saints of zoo --
:32:26. > :32:29.Zurich were beheaded, and theoretically walked up the hill
:32:30. > :32:33.about 40 metres, carrying their heads under their arms, and laid
:32:34. > :32:38.down and that point, after praying, the legend goes that they
:32:39. > :32:43.theoretically dug their own graves and that is of the Grossmunster
:32:44. > :32:53.Cathedral. And if you walk around is you -- Zurich, you will see murals
:32:54. > :33:05.of the three headless saints. I don't know why, but lots of things
:33:06. > :33:11.in Zurich are named either Felix or Regula. There you go. Just a
:33:12. > :33:23.pick-up, as they went through five K, Mockenhaupt, a good distance back
:33:24. > :33:27.already, struggling to recover. Fionnuala Britton and her were the
:33:28. > :33:33.only ones that ran the 10,000m on the first day and have come back to
:33:34. > :33:42.run this. Really struggling a bit and I am not sure if we will see her
:33:43. > :33:49.actually finish today. So this is the first time after crossing the
:33:50. > :33:53.bridge, they took a left to turn heading along the river and then
:33:54. > :33:57.this is the bit that Brendan got a taxi to go up the hill and Paula
:33:58. > :34:11.went for a little jog. Which tells you everything you need to know. It
:34:12. > :34:16.wasn't a taxi, Steve, it was the barn -- River Lee Railway, it is the
:34:17. > :34:20.only cause I have seen joined by that and it gives you a view over
:34:21. > :34:25.the top of the city are Zurich and I am amazed they have the city are
:34:26. > :34:27.Zurich and I am amazed they have to negotiate it four times, it will
:34:28. > :34:34.make it a really tough course swing right in a moment. And then they
:34:35. > :34:38.will climb up towards the university area. Beautiful historic area, the
:34:39. > :34:47.old town, the old part of the city, running along the river bank here,
:34:48. > :34:51.that is pretty comfortable. There is the funicular railway, C. Of the
:34:52. > :34:59.course from the river to the top of the course and it is absolutely
:35:00. > :35:04.amazing, it is terrific to go upon the funicular, but I wouldn't like
:35:05. > :35:11.to run up it four times. Once. Did somebody take you? I can't believe
:35:12. > :35:16.you went all by yourself. Somebody must have taken new, told you how to
:35:17. > :35:20.get a ticket and where you get on. It is free tickets, and I have a
:35:21. > :35:26.guidebook to take me around Zurich, you were busy, so I did it myself.
:35:27. > :35:33.We were walking around the rest of the course! You are right, though,
:35:34. > :35:44.can you do it into sections? Brendan went all the way up in one go, the
:35:45. > :35:49.athletes have covered that first section, and then they will do a
:35:50. > :35:55.U-turn, go back down the same street and up the second part of the hill
:35:56. > :35:59.to the university area. So they do get a flat part here, but in some
:36:00. > :36:05.respects, if there is a big hill, you want to get it all out of the
:36:06. > :36:08.way. This is very slightly up along this section, very slightly, and
:36:09. > :36:16.they will get along to one of the main tram stops and do a U-turn and
:36:17. > :36:27.head back along the same street. There is Fionnuala Britton, just
:36:28. > :36:35.dropping off the main group. Yes, not even five kilometres into the
:36:36. > :36:48.race and you can see the damage that the hill has done in terms of how
:36:49. > :36:55.the field is breaking up, and she is already finding out that you need to
:36:56. > :37:08.be in contact from the beginning. You can run your own race and come
:37:09. > :37:21.through later, but she is taking a real gamble and the athletes at the
:37:22. > :37:33.top of the field now, the likes of Daunay at the front... Climbing all
:37:34. > :37:48.the way here, this group are settling a little. It is steadily
:37:49. > :37:59.increasing as you get closer to the top. Fionnuala Britton deciding to
:38:00. > :38:13.take up a post at the back of the group, that is sensible. At the
:38:14. > :38:18.defending champion Incerti... This is the Steve bid, having to work
:38:19. > :38:29.very hard. Not too many championship marathons have this sort of hill in
:38:30. > :38:34.it, it is brutal. We were given information that it is different to
:38:35. > :38:41.the Zurich marathon course but it was to design the big Swiss hope --
:38:42. > :38:45.designed for the big Swiss hope in the men's marathon, but it will
:38:46. > :38:51.probably make this a slower paced race. I think they designed the
:38:52. > :38:54.course with that in mind. That climb, as you look down, you
:38:55. > :39:00.consider damage it is doing to athletes. The only marathon course
:39:01. > :39:10.where I have seen a funicular railway running from the lowest part
:39:11. > :39:18.of the highest part of the course. Now they are coming up towards the
:39:19. > :39:28.Institute of Technology, the famous Zurich Institute of Technology, one
:39:29. > :39:38.of the best engineering schools in the world, and there is a platform
:39:39. > :39:42.there, viewing point that overlooks the city, so you can tell how high
:39:43. > :39:46.they have come. Look at Abeylegesse E, you can see how hard she has been
:39:47. > :40:02.working. I think this course is going to test them. That is the
:40:03. > :40:09.viewing platform, 50m higher. You can only imagine why they designed
:40:10. > :40:22.the course like this. They could have had it flat and followed the
:40:23. > :40:32.lake and had a couple more laps, so it wasn't designed to be to the
:40:33. > :40:42.advantage of the athletes, and it was to help victims of man, who is a
:40:43. > :40:52.marathon runner, -- Vic Rothman. The Institute of Technology, part of the
:40:53. > :40:58.University of Zurich, they are going past all of the buildings that make
:40:59. > :41:08.up the university. 26,000 students, it is a big employer here in Zurich.
:41:09. > :41:13.We can see some of the names going through, Quaglia, as Paula was
:41:14. > :41:18.saying earlier on, Toniolo, let's not forget there is a team race
:41:19. > :41:23.here, the Russians and the Italians and the Swedes look as though they
:41:24. > :41:31.are struggling a little bit up that hill. That is the other thing, if
:41:32. > :41:46.you get persuaded you are going to have a Swedish team and you will go
:41:47. > :41:53.to the European marathon championship, you would not be
:41:54. > :42:15.expecting to have a course like this with a hail of such a gradient -- a
:42:16. > :42:21.hill. The other aspect, I was listening to you, Paula, in the
:42:22. > :42:24.guide, running downhill when you are tired, explained that a little bit
:42:25. > :42:27.better, how tiring that can be? Exactly, it can almost be more of a
:42:28. > :42:30.danger to marathon runners as the race goes on. Uphill, you will slow
:42:31. > :42:33.down and struggle but it is the eccentric loading, the quad muscle,
:42:34. > :42:35.one of the biggest on your legs, needs to absorb that shock and you
:42:36. > :42:38.are almost stopping. That technique of being able to relax enough and
:42:39. > :42:40.absorb and pushed onto next stride without putting too much impact into
:42:41. > :42:51.your quadricep muscle, it happened famously in the Boston Marathon, the
:42:52. > :42:58.leader had to stop because she cramped up so badly going down a
:42:59. > :43:07.downhill section. This is quite steep this part, the Museum of fine
:43:08. > :43:16.Art in the middle of the Zurich, with the Picassos and the Manets.
:43:17. > :43:27.Did you make your visit? I just told you I did. You said the same thing
:43:28. > :43:35.in Glasgow. Ideas, there is a famous picture by Andy Warhol, the tin of
:43:36. > :43:40.Campbell's soup. Zurich is, as Brendan was saying, well known for
:43:41. > :43:45.art lovers, there is a lot of money in Zurich, let's face it, but one of
:43:46. > :43:51.the most controversial things you might see, just off to the right,
:43:52. > :43:55.there is a huge big crane that looks like it might have been shifted from
:43:56. > :44:03.the dockyards of Tyneside. We were talking about it and said we did not
:44:04. > :44:17.think there was a shipping heritage, it has been brought in from a German
:44:18. > :44:29.dockyard, it is a piece of art. It is hugely controversial, cost a lot
:44:30. > :44:33.of money and it just doesn't look right. There is one in Glasgow at
:44:34. > :44:36.the side of the Clyde, left as testimony to its shipping heritage,
:44:37. > :44:57.but this one looks exactly the same and has nothing to do with the
:44:58. > :45:02.Zurich heritage. She is in -- competing well be on tour station.
:45:03. > :45:08.Perhaps the fact she has not been on the bike or swimming will be to her
:45:09. > :45:13.advantage. She is mixing with world-class runners, I am wondering
:45:14. > :45:18.how long Nicola Spirig can continue with these athletes. She does have
:45:19. > :45:23.the endurance and stamina from all of the hours of training she has put
:45:24. > :45:29.in over the three disciplines, but it is whether her legs can stand up
:45:30. > :45:34.to the discipline of the marathon. She will have a lot of support out
:45:35. > :45:47.there. She also has her team-mate alongside her. They are heading out
:45:48. > :45:53.towards the ten kilometres point not far at the end of this street, where
:45:54. > :46:02.they will turn, if you saw the guide earlier that Pollard did, there is a
:46:03. > :46:07.turn into the park -- Paula. A little smile from Valeria Straneo.
:46:08. > :46:17.There are Alessandra Aguilar water stations, one along the street in
:46:18. > :46:28.the city centre area -- two. Hills on the first lap, there is Jessica
:46:29. > :46:38.Augusto, perhaps putting paid to her hopes. She has closed down on
:46:39. > :46:44.Fionnuala Britton. The two of them working together, Fionnuala Britton,
:46:45. > :46:49.she came off that lead group, you can see that Jessica Augusto is not
:46:50. > :46:56.too far away. She seems to be fairly relaxed, it is early stages, perhaps
:46:57. > :47:01.she is playing a canny game. It is early stages. She always wants to
:47:02. > :47:06.start cautiously. She does not want to push hard in the first ten
:47:07. > :47:11.kilometres. She is checking her watch regularly and seems to be
:47:12. > :47:17.getting information. That is a good thing for Fionnuala Britton, she can
:47:18. > :47:24.benefit from the experience of Jessica Augusto and Anna Incerti. We
:47:25. > :47:29.will see this front group not pull away much through this section and
:47:30. > :47:37.the next break-ups we will see are when they negotiate their hill for
:47:38. > :47:41.the second time. Fionnuala Britton seemed to run contrary up that hill,
:47:42. > :47:48.as did Jessica Augusto. Whether we will see that distance grow, we will
:47:49. > :47:56.see how that pans out, -- comfortably. A quick word on
:47:57. > :48:03.29-macro, she was born and grew up in America and now has gone back to
:48:04. > :48:11.live in Croatia -- Lisa Christina Nemec. Her parents are Croatian. She
:48:12. > :48:18.wanted to run for her home country. She is looking good out there today,
:48:19. > :48:27.I think. Yes, that lead group, with one or two in there, including Lisa
:48:28. > :48:39.Christina Nemec should, they are going well. There is the Swiss
:48:40. > :48:48.runner and then the Olympic triathlon champion, Nicola Spirig,
:48:49. > :48:53.in the red. Jessica Augusto, Anna Incerti, Fionnuala Britton,
:48:54. > :48:59.approaching ten kilometres. Elvan Abeylegesse is still tucked in
:49:00. > :49:04.there, Christelle Daunay as well. She would be looking for a good
:49:05. > :49:09.performance. The French have had a bit of an up and down week in lots
:49:10. > :49:17.of ways. They have been buying with Great Britain for the top of the
:49:18. > :49:23.medal table. -- competing. You can see the Chinese garden, they will
:49:24. > :49:28.take a right-hand turn, a few twists and turns in the grass section, I
:49:29. > :49:40.wonder if they will put a few mats down to avoid them slipping. There
:49:41. > :49:43.is the ten kilometres split. Did you notice if they have run through the
:49:44. > :49:54.drinks station? It should be around here. I was wondering how close they
:49:55. > :49:58.would put it to that narrow turn it into the park. It would complicate
:49:59. > :50:05.things if they were trying to negotiate both at the same time.
:50:06. > :50:13.There are going to take the right turn and go along a little stream.
:50:14. > :50:23.Is she taking a selfie? I don't think so. Just for a second, from
:50:24. > :50:27.that distance, I thought, she has got a mobile phone and is taking a
:50:28. > :50:35.selfie in the middle of the marathon! It will happen soon. You
:50:36. > :50:39.can see all the Russians there. Almost in perfect synchronicity,
:50:40. > :50:47.picking their watches as they crossed the ten kilometres mark. --
:50:48. > :50:54.clicking. I have never understood why they need to do that. They can
:50:55. > :51:03.look at the big clock. Certainly in a Championship race, times do not
:51:04. > :51:07.matter hugely, it is more important of the victory. I do not know why
:51:08. > :51:13.you would need to analyse the splits afterwards. They have made the
:51:14. > :51:20.little turn through the park, I think that is the water station, you
:51:21. > :51:25.have a better sight of it. They have just gone through it. They have
:51:26. > :51:31.taken their early drinks on-board and even on a day like this,
:51:32. > :51:40.marathon runners will stick to their prerace plan of when to drink. On a
:51:41. > :51:45.hot day, more water can be taken on board, but these are all their own
:51:46. > :51:49.personal drinks that have been prepared. The fact that it is a lap
:51:50. > :51:55.cause makes it easier for the support teams to have the drinks in
:51:56. > :51:59.the right places. Absolutely, the rule in Championship marathon is
:52:00. > :52:03.that the team official can hand you the drinks as well as the
:52:04. > :52:08.opportunity to pick them up from the table. Some athletes prefer about.
:52:09. > :52:16.The bandage for the team support crew is that here at they only need
:52:17. > :52:29.possibly four at each drinks station -- advantage. -- prefer that. You
:52:30. > :52:40.can also get given it from the team official. That little spurt from the
:52:41. > :52:44.bicycle camera gives you an indication of the gap between
:52:45. > :52:53.Jessica Augusto and the nature of twists and turns in the park. There
:52:54. > :53:02.is a low-flying helicopter. It is probably on the lake. As they
:53:03. > :53:10.progress through the park, another little right-hand turn back onto the
:53:11. > :53:26.road. I think they will have mapped out, it is a little bit gravelly. --
:53:27. > :53:41.mats. I am not sure if it is 800 to go. Hopefully they will have removed
:53:42. > :53:47.the tables. Later in the race, a few people might be inside the Italian
:53:48. > :53:56.restaurant watching the runners. It is a bit like an obstacle course
:53:57. > :54:02.with seeds, people and the grass. We walked through here and all those
:54:03. > :54:09.tables were out in the road area. We assumed they would be moved. Those
:54:10. > :54:17.are the old swimming baths. UK get an nice sauna there on a day like
:54:18. > :54:24.this. -- you could get. Perfect running conditions. Christelle
:54:25. > :54:31.Daunay from France in the white and dark blue, Valeria Straneo, a great
:54:32. > :54:45.race last year, Elvan Abeylegesse on the far side. Lisa Christina Nemec
:54:46. > :54:52.now Mitch there as well. -- now there as well. There are the two
:54:53. > :55:13.Swiss athletes, Nicola Spirig rare. That is the lead group. -- there. It
:55:14. > :55:19.is great to see Nicola Spirig. Nicola Spirig, the women's triathlon
:55:20. > :55:24.champion is taking on the matter -- the marathon runners at their own
:55:25. > :55:29.event. I am wondering how long she will last. There are seven in the
:55:30. > :55:34.group and I am expecting drama. This course will take its toll on the
:55:35. > :55:42.athletes and I will not be surprised if some of the action, as we look at
:55:43. > :55:47.the Opera House, will be dramatic. Zurich is often voted as the best
:55:48. > :55:55.city in the world to live in, one of the best. You need to have a few
:55:56. > :56:06.quid! We were assuming that! And your name is not Oprah Winfrey! It
:56:07. > :56:16.is a beta full city, -- a beautiful city. It has an old-fashioned feel,
:56:17. > :56:22.the financial success as well, it is not too far away from the large ski
:56:23. > :56:26.resorts in the winter. Great places to go in the summer in the
:56:27. > :56:39.mountains. It is a beautiful part of the world. It is great that last
:56:40. > :56:51.night in the Liexigrund Stadium, the atmosphere really got going. Hussein
:56:52. > :56:59.won the 400m hurdles gold medal. Martyn Rooney finally won his first
:57:00. > :57:06.Championship gold medal, Adam Gemili had a brilliant night, in Chile and
:57:07. > :57:19.wet conditions. Tonight, distance bands will see Jo Pavey back on the
:57:20. > :57:23.track -- chilly. Does it Smith is chasing down the lead group. Jo
:57:24. > :57:40.Pavey will go to night game -- Jessica Augusto. -- will go tonight
:57:41. > :57:52.against. -- again. The athletes further down the field, after a bit
:57:53. > :58:00.of a surge, one athlete is going slowly. The Russians who have been
:58:01. > :58:08.running constantly together, look like they may be ready to pass. We
:58:09. > :58:12.are going to see lots of changes to the positions, not only in the front
:58:13. > :58:19.group, but further down the field as well. There is another very
:58:20. > :58:49.experienced marathon runner, 32-macro. -- Marisa Barros. We have
:58:50. > :59:23.not mentioned Miranda Boonstra, she is a great runner. Just watching
:59:24. > :59:29.Nicola Spirig, is there are precedents for triathletes moving to
:59:30. > :59:38.the marathon? -- is there a precedent. I cannot think of one. I
:59:39. > :59:44.cannot believe she will stay with this web for much longer. She is
:59:45. > :59:51.running really well, you can tell that she is working at it -- this
:59:52. > :59:56.group. She had a fantastic performance in the London Olympics.
:59:57. > :00:01.She is in seventh place at the back of the group as they run longer
:00:02. > :00:13.waterside, passing some of the financial areas. -- as they run
:00:14. > :00:29.along the waterside. That is the headquarters of the Zurich
:00:30. > :00:34.Insurance. -- of Zurich Insurance. Just as we looked at the overhead
:00:35. > :00:40.shot, we could get an idea of the distance from the overhead pack --
:00:41. > :00:52.leading pack to Augusto, who is making up the distance steadily, and
:00:53. > :00:59.just behind her, Fionnuala Britton is sadly struggling to keep up with
:01:00. > :01:05.the pace and is isolated. There is Augusto, just negotiating that sharp
:01:06. > :01:06.turn before they go a long the front and to the narrow tramline section
:01:07. > :01:19.again. This section of the course is an
:01:20. > :01:28.area where the athletes can take advantage of that, switch backwards,
:01:29. > :01:32.so they are virtually running alongside the athletes, and they can
:01:33. > :01:37.get a good idea of what those gaps are and who is having a good day and
:01:38. > :01:43.not such a good day. Jessica Augusto got a good site that lead group.
:01:44. > :01:58.This is a bit further back, the three Russians there, Ejjafini, and
:01:59. > :02:05.Filomena Costa, I think. At the moment, Switzerland had a better
:02:06. > :02:14.countered with two in the lead group. But still the early stages
:02:15. > :02:17.and that lead group just running together at the moment and as they
:02:18. > :02:25.head onto the start of the second big lap, they will have that hill to
:02:26. > :02:32.contest a second time but in the meantime, they are happy to run in a
:02:33. > :02:35.group together. So while this race progresses, I was talking about what
:02:36. > :02:39.has been happening in the stadium over the last couple of nights and
:02:40. > :02:42.what is to come and I think Jonathan has got the British team captain
:02:43. > :02:47.with him in the studio. I certainly have, we will be back to
:02:48. > :02:51.you shortly, but Goldie, you are very welcome. Steve mentioned you
:02:52. > :02:54.being the team captain and all of the athletes we have spoken to so
:02:55. > :03:01.far after they have competed have talked about that team speech. So
:03:02. > :03:06.what did you say? Well, it was quite a long speech, it took me a little
:03:07. > :03:12.while to prepare. As soon as Neal told me I would be captain, I
:03:13. > :03:19.started preparing. I am the type of person that, if you are going to do
:03:20. > :03:27.a job, you do it to your Best of ability. Where you head girl? --
:03:28. > :03:35.where you head girl. Deputy. But I was out for nearly two years with
:03:36. > :03:39.career threatening injury and I used that to talk about what I hope they
:03:40. > :03:42.never experience and they perspective it gives you on
:03:43. > :03:47.athletics, and I talked about the fact that we do take it for granted.
:03:48. > :03:52.It sounds awful, you don't mean to, but you do whilst you are in it,
:03:53. > :03:56.because it feels like it is normal and you do it a day in and day out
:03:57. > :04:03.and you are surrounded by athletes, but ultimately, it is very
:04:04. > :04:06.extraordinary what we do. What they all talked about was compete like it
:04:07. > :04:13.is your last competition, that is the big takeaway. Yes, I ended with
:04:14. > :04:18.that, I left them with the question, how will you perform? I talked to
:04:19. > :04:21.everybody in the room, doctors, physios, athlete, coach, how would
:04:22. > :04:26.you perform if it is the last opportunity you have to do so? It
:04:27. > :04:31.makes you think and that is what you want to leave people with. I was
:04:32. > :04:35.quite emotional and I think that sometimes helps other athletes,
:04:36. > :04:40.because we are trained to control our emotions and almost the robotic,
:04:41. > :04:44.process driven on the track, but we are all human beings, we all get
:04:45. > :04:49.nervous and had doubts sometimes, and especially with youngsters. The
:04:50. > :04:58.team is a layer of individuals that Jo Pavey Libby grandmother to. She
:04:59. > :05:05.may pull you up on that one. Mother, maybe! She is quite open to
:05:06. > :05:09.that fact! You have these layers of the team that are very young but
:05:10. > :05:14.unbelievably good. You talked about being a human being, not just an
:05:15. > :05:17.athlete, and often when you are in the team, you don't get to know the
:05:18. > :05:23.demons that are going on in people's mine, you look at other
:05:24. > :05:23.athletes and you probably think, you don't
:05:24. > :05:26.people's mine, you look at other athletes and you probably think, you
:05:27. > :05:30.don't feel like I feel in the morning, and to see that human side,
:05:31. > :05:34.I guess, was great for them. I definitely wanted to get that
:05:35. > :05:39.across, it is nice being captain, because you can have those chats
:05:40. > :05:44.with people where you feel you are able to, so the likes of Morgan, who
:05:45. > :05:49.may have come off the track feeling disappointed, she is 17 years old,
:05:50. > :05:54.we have to put it in perspective. Only just 17, she is not 18 until
:05:55. > :05:59.May, which is incredible and she was very close in qualifying. She will
:06:00. > :06:04.kick herself, but it is something you learn from. We are all human
:06:05. > :06:07.beings and I think people watching on TV watch the Olympics or the
:06:08. > :06:15.European Championship send you think that athletes are different and
:06:16. > :06:18.freaks of nature, almost, and they are not. They work very hard. I
:06:19. > :06:24.don't like the word talent, I think it is the most overused word in
:06:25. > :06:29.sport, you think that is what gets everyone started, I can throw a ball
:06:30. > :06:34.so I can throw the javelin, I have never seen a 13-year-old girl that
:06:35. > :06:39.can throw 60m. It is talent, yes, but ultimately it is working hard.
:06:40. > :06:44.You cannot be an overnight success without working hard, I have an
:06:45. > :06:51.issue with the word talent. The focus that you have had to put on
:06:52. > :06:54.being captain, aside from the team speech, did it take away from your
:06:55. > :07:00.best performance? It wasn't your best performance. It is interesting
:07:01. > :07:05.to say that, it could have done, but I don't think so. I spoke to Neill
:07:06. > :07:12.about it and said it could be a distraction, but when you give a
:07:13. > :07:19.speech like that you get nervous about it, and I was pretty nervous,
:07:20. > :07:22.but that makes it a good speech, but my performance, to look at it
:07:23. > :07:28.objectively, and I haven't had the time to do it, I have not had the
:07:29. > :07:34.training I would like to have done. I have thrown from a full run of
:07:35. > :07:38.around 30 times. I have thrown decent distances this year but I
:07:39. > :07:47.don't know, because I tore my car in the spring. It has been the worst
:07:48. > :07:51.preparation. I know my arm is electric, one of the best in the
:07:52. > :07:56.world, but because I do come in a bit quicker than most athletes, it
:07:57. > :08:00.was speeding things up to an extent where I was almost not having to
:08:01. > :08:06.throw and it is not good when you are thinking about your performance.
:08:07. > :08:11.And what are your scars like, physically in your arm and in your
:08:12. > :08:19.mind, from what happened in 2012? I can show you my scar, it is pretty
:08:20. > :08:25.impressive. It is going to be on this camera. I like scars, it tells
:08:26. > :08:32.a story. They took the ligament out of that arm, so I have some rather
:08:33. > :08:37.interesting looking scars. SNA transplanted it from one arm to the
:08:38. > :08:46.other? Yes, because it needs reconstructing. I have had three
:08:47. > :08:51.operations. They repaired the ligament first but it wasn't strong
:08:52. > :08:55.enough, a screw came away and hole in the back of the bone. The arm
:08:56. > :08:59.didn't feel great and you can understand why it wasn't settling
:09:00. > :09:03.down, so after the second operation, coming around in the
:09:04. > :09:08.operating theatre, my doctor was standing by my bed when I woke up
:09:09. > :09:12.and he said, you need an elbow reconstruction and basically have to
:09:13. > :09:16.go back to the beginning. It is a more complicated surgery and me
:09:17. > :09:21.being me, I just went about trying to find the best guy in the world,
:09:22. > :09:27.which I did, and I have ended up with a quicker arm than I have ever
:09:28. > :09:35.had. Amazing, so this season was perhaps a bit too soon? Yes, and
:09:36. > :09:38.when I look at it, I was amazed. When I look back at it in a few
:09:39. > :09:48.weeks, I will have thrown further than I expected to. In that third
:09:49. > :09:58.throw, I have never not made a cut, it was a very strange feeling, I
:09:59. > :10:01.have never had that feeling before. I actually thought, this could be
:10:02. > :10:07.the last time you throw a javelin, if I don't make that cut. But the
:10:08. > :10:16.only good thing about that throw is the shared, I think. I mean, it has
:10:17. > :10:20.been fairly horrific but I do get on with things. It has been emotional,
:10:21. > :10:25.and I have been disappointed, but I don't think many people would have
:10:26. > :10:29.got back from a career saving operation, basically, and that is
:10:30. > :10:34.your gift as a javelin thrower, your arm, if you don't have one, you
:10:35. > :10:39.haven't got a hope and it is the bit of your body you can rely on and
:10:40. > :10:43.this time last year, I was in a sling, so to be here, I never want
:10:44. > :10:47.to make up the numbers, but being here was quite a challenge. You
:10:48. > :10:52.certainly may turn out to be the best ever team captain because at
:10:53. > :10:57.the moment, the British team is on course potentially for its greatest
:10:58. > :11:01.ever European Championships. It is unbelievably good and I can't say it
:11:02. > :11:05.is as a result of my speech, but having spoken to a few athletes,
:11:06. > :11:10.they have taken it on board and referred to it and that is what I
:11:11. > :11:15.wanted, secretly, I think, to improve a few people's performance
:11:16. > :11:24.by 1% and that is often all you need at championships. And hopefully
:11:25. > :11:29.Britain will have the greatest ever medal haul at a Championships.
:11:30. > :11:32.People's performances have been unbelievably good, especially in
:11:33. > :11:38.these conditions, it is not one. Goldie, thank you becoming to speak
:11:39. > :11:43.to us and all the best with the rest of the season and into next summer.
:11:44. > :11:49.Thank you, and back to the marathon now with Steve, Brendan and Paula.
:11:50. > :11:55.STEVE CRAM: Yes, best wishes to Goldie. Back to the marathon, this
:11:56. > :12:01.hill for the second time is certainly pulling them apart a
:12:02. > :12:07.little bit. You can see the Olympic triathlon champion Spirig not able
:12:08. > :12:17.to stay with them. The lead group now, Straneo and the others, has
:12:18. > :12:24.been closed down. The one who is moving through nicely is Augusto,
:12:25. > :12:36.just looking at her wash -- her watch there. This hill is brutal,
:12:37. > :12:42.Nemec looks very comfortable. Straneo just following Nemec. And
:12:43. > :12:50.you know sometimes when you are on the hill, it is just a little test,
:12:51. > :12:54.it gives you a bit of confidence that others were struggling on their
:12:55. > :13:01.hill and it gives you confidence. But look how steep it is, it is
:13:02. > :13:06.brutal. There is Augusto, opening up a bit of a gap. Spirig giving a good
:13:07. > :13:12.account of herself, competing with the specialist distance runners.
:13:13. > :13:15.Jessica Augusto is a former European cross-country champion and that
:13:16. > :13:24.group suddenly splits apart. The secret is not their hill, it is
:13:25. > :13:32.recovery from the hill. Augusto and the Spirig and Aguilar, just coming
:13:33. > :13:37.up that hill, it is twice they have done it and they have two more to
:13:38. > :13:40.go. This is going to be a war of attrition. There are going to be so
:13:41. > :13:44.many changes in this event as the race goes on, so I wouldn't be
:13:45. > :13:54.giving out any medals yet, there is so much running to do. Nemec trying
:13:55. > :13:55.to stretch the hill, hill, Straneo, the World Championships
:13:56. > :14:03.silver-medallist, and Abeylegesse say, former European champion at
:14:04. > :14:08.5,000 and 10,000m, being closed down by Augusto, who looks comfortable. I
:14:09. > :14:13.was watching Abeylegesse say the first time she went up the hill and
:14:14. > :14:18.you could almost see the shock on her face, almost saying why am I
:14:19. > :14:23.facing a hill like this? And the gap has opened up. You can get a lot of
:14:24. > :14:27.information about your fellow athletes when you are climbing a
:14:28. > :14:31.hill, even from the way their breathing sounds all a glance across
:14:32. > :14:36.can show you if they are enjoying it or not. On the downhills, you can
:14:37. > :14:42.see who's legs have taken a battering going up the hill and who
:14:43. > :14:46.are suffering going down the hill. Learning a little bit about each
:14:47. > :14:53.lap, about how the hill feels, how the tangents work and where would be
:14:54. > :14:58.the best place to make a break. Paulo, the expression on her face
:14:59. > :15:02.was why am I running up the hill like this? And that is a fair
:15:03. > :15:07.question in a marathon in the middle of a city like Zurich. Yes, but
:15:08. > :15:12.marathons do have hills in them. In Athens, the famous one, there is a
:15:13. > :15:16.big climb and in New York, the course profile climbs more than this
:15:17. > :15:21.event does, but the issue there is it is a gradual climb over the
:15:22. > :15:25.bridges and different points in Central Park, which means the net
:15:26. > :15:30.climb is higher, but here, it is done in a much shorter section and a
:15:31. > :15:34.much steeper which takes more out of the legs and also that drop each lap
:15:35. > :15:45.takes an impact and the takes its toll. This was designed to have a
:15:46. > :15:50.hill in that. It was specifically designed. I do not think there is a
:15:51. > :15:57.large amount wrong with that. I guess we would do that if we were
:15:58. > :16:03.hosting. It would be nice to see a home win in one of the marathon is
:16:04. > :16:11.here, just as it was great to see the stadium come to life last night
:16:12. > :16:16.in the 400m hurdles. A bit disappointed to see no British
:16:17. > :16:20.athletes in this event. We had some good athletes performing in the
:16:21. > :16:28.Commonwealth Games, this is a team race as well. I am disappointed
:16:29. > :16:32.there is no British athletes. Paula alluded to it being such a difficult
:16:33. > :16:44.year and a lot of the British athletes, were involved in the
:16:45. > :16:52.Commonwealth Games. Everybody aims for that, it was a big event in
:16:53. > :17:04.Glasgow. One or two people were injured as well. Certainly one event
:17:05. > :17:09.that you cannot do in both is the marathon. A lot of the athletes --
:17:10. > :17:16.athletes took the view that they wanted to race in the Commonwealth
:17:17. > :17:20.Games. I think also we do not have that depth to be able to go deeper
:17:21. > :17:30.and have a second team competing here. We can almost blame Jo Pavey
:17:31. > :17:35.for staying on the track! We will allow her that, she keeps winning
:17:36. > :17:40.medals, she has had a great summer and more to come tonight. I think
:17:41. > :17:53.the final tonight will be much more difficult. She will be given at 100%
:17:54. > :17:58.again. Four women clear here. Their approach to the hill was different.
:17:59. > :18:04.Elvan Abeylegesse looked like she was struggling. Lisa Christina Nemec
:18:05. > :18:09.was leading. Christelle Daunay let them lead a little, but then came
:18:10. > :18:14.back. Going up the hill, they were split apart, but they are back
:18:15. > :18:20.together. It is course at management, not too hard up the hill
:18:21. > :18:26.and Jessica Augusto we can see as they go down the street back towards
:18:27. > :18:33.the lake, the four of them together. Jessica Augusto is not too far
:18:34. > :18:38.behind. The point I was making, Lisa Christina Nemec seemed like she was
:18:39. > :18:43.testing out the others. No real push from her, but it might be next time
:18:44. > :18:50.around where she might think about doing it, Elvan Abeylegesse was
:18:51. > :18:56.struggling a bit, she will be thinking about Christelle Daunay
:18:57. > :19:08.holding back. This downhill section, crowds are building, it is a big
:19:09. > :19:14.intersection. You change trams here. Big support, Nicola Spirig there,
:19:15. > :19:18.the triathlon champion, her team-mate with her. There is the
:19:19. > :19:25.Spanish runner. Jessica Augusto joined them and went past them.
:19:26. > :19:29.There is the leading group, Elvan Abeylegesse for the first time
:19:30. > :19:34.towards the front of the group. These three have to work together to
:19:35. > :19:39.meant taming good position. A big app between them and Jessica
:19:40. > :19:46.Augusto. The Portuguese athlete who is still close enough to the lead
:19:47. > :19:51.group to be a factor -- a big gap. Elvan Abeylegesse has taken real
:19:52. > :20:06.advantage of the downhill section to get back on level terms. She has
:20:07. > :20:10.obviously recovered well. She is trying to get back into contact
:20:11. > :20:17.after the hill. As they came down the hill, Swiss television have a
:20:18. > :20:46.speedometer to clock the runners as they go past. Really? This is Smith
:20:47. > :20:55.looking at her watch. We keep mentioning the team competition --
:20:56. > :21:02.Lisa Christina Nemec. Italy were leading. It is about the pool at a
:21:03. > :21:18.time and Portugal, Switzerland were leading -- culmative. It is the
:21:19. > :21:24.culmative time. Russia may well improve their position, they were
:21:25. > :21:37.forth at that point. Switzerland, these two were in that lead group --
:21:38. > :21:47.fourth. That would be great, it would be a surprise if Switzerland
:21:48. > :21:51.nipped in. A team prize for them. I am really impressed with Nicola
:21:52. > :21:56.Spirig, she has run with the group. She is in the chasing group. The
:21:57. > :22:02.triathlon champion showing what it takes. She is competing against the
:22:03. > :22:07.best marathon runners in Europe, taking them on on her terms and I
:22:08. > :22:17.think it is great. It's usually the training you have to do to be as
:22:18. > :22:23.good as she is at the triathlon -- it shows you the training you have
:22:24. > :22:30.to do. There is Elvan Abeylegesse there. Valeria Straneo. The French
:22:31. > :22:38.record-holder, Christelle Daunay, Lisa Christina Nemec. They are
:22:39. > :22:49.collecting themselves, working well together. The race is unfolding and
:22:50. > :22:54.still be effort up those hills, two more times they have to tackle
:22:55. > :22:59.backline and two more times we will see the field open and close again
:23:00. > :23:04.and eventually that hill as they go past the Chinese garden along the
:23:05. > :23:11.lakeside, a pleasant part of the course, beautiful aspect across the
:23:12. > :23:14.hills, beyond Zurich and these athletes vying full for the flat
:23:15. > :23:19.part and the risk by two from that climb and still Jessica Augusto,
:23:20. > :23:29.former European cross-country champion, she has always promised to
:23:30. > :23:40.do an awful lot in the marathon. Portugal have a great record in this
:23:41. > :23:47.marathon. Jessica Augusto is good enough. She is running a very
:23:48. > :23:52.controlled race and sticking to her own pays. She checks her splits
:23:53. > :24:03.regularly and did not want to get sucked into an early pace -- pace.
:24:04. > :24:10.We will get an idea now just how big the gap is. Back to Jessica Augusto
:24:11. > :24:17.as she comes up to the line. 19 seconds, she is closing quickly on
:24:18. > :24:22.them. She is doing it at her own pace and she is sticking well to her
:24:23. > :24:29.race plan. She will be back in contact with that group. 34 minutes
:24:30. > :24:37.and 20 seconds of the second ten kilometres section and that was a
:24:38. > :24:44.bit of a pick-up of pace, not a lot, but they ran it a little bit
:24:45. > :24:49.quicker, and you factor in the hill, Anna Incerti, the defending
:24:50. > :25:04.champion, fearless Britain is struggling. -- Fionnuala Britton. It
:25:05. > :25:09.is an interesting approach, she did not raise it all out and when she
:25:10. > :25:15.realised she was not going to be amongst the medals, perhaps she
:25:16. > :25:21.backed off. On the one hand, it is a difficult thing to do, making a
:25:22. > :25:25.debut in the marathon, but when you're training for a marathon, you
:25:26. > :25:42.get into good shape and when you stand on the start line, you should
:25:43. > :25:46.be in personal best shape. First change at the front, Lisa Christina
:25:47. > :25:50.Nemec is approaching the water station, Jessica Augusto will see
:25:51. > :25:54.that one of the group has dropped off and it will give her something
:25:55. > :26:00.to work towards. Out of the top five, all of them had team
:26:01. > :26:05.management handing them drinks, except for Elvan Abeylegesse. She
:26:06. > :26:10.had to get her own drink. Not really getting the support from the Turkish
:26:11. > :26:14.team, they perhaps do not have enough people. There is another
:26:15. > :26:22.water station on each lap, but these two at the front were handed it by
:26:23. > :26:32.their team support. Do we know where the camera is? It is on the water.
:26:33. > :26:45.It is a big boat. No, it is a little speedboat with two cameras on it.
:26:46. > :26:53.Has it got a big mast? He will keep running along there and he will run
:26:54. > :26:58.out of pavement! Lisa Christina Nemec was looking so good at that
:26:59. > :27:09.hill, but she has dropped back. She is going through a bad patch. Just
:27:10. > :27:26.pointing out to the left, that is a Henry Moore sculpture. Is this still
:27:27. > :27:38.on the boat, the camera? No, it is a helicopter, I can hear it. It is a
:27:39. > :27:42.big boat, with its own helicopter! Probably someone wealthy around
:27:43. > :27:47.here. Lisa Christina Nemec struggling as we go through the
:27:48. > :27:53.halfway point. That is what the plot was four, the halfway point. A
:27:54. > :28:03.pretty decent pace being set -- that is what that clock was for. When you
:28:04. > :28:07.see athletes dropping off, it gives you encouragement. Medals start to
:28:08. > :28:13.be thought about when you get past the halfway point. Three working
:28:14. > :28:17.together. Jessica Augusto, she can see Lisa Christina Nemec, I think
:28:18. > :28:23.she will pass her and she will focus on the lead group. I am not sure
:28:24. > :28:29.that she has dropped off the lead group match. She will hope that she
:28:30. > :28:35.can stay strong and keep them in sight. Unfortunately for the
:28:36. > :28:42.Croatian, it looks as though it will be a struggle. I think that half
:28:43. > :28:55.marathon split time and serves some of those questions. As difficult as
:28:56. > :29:00.this is, Lisa Christina Nemec is running inside personal best pays on
:29:01. > :29:08.a difficult course. She was the winner in the zero marathon -- pace.
:29:09. > :29:15.Sasha -- Zurich marathon. That was a different course. You would not want
:29:16. > :29:22.to predict things. It is the halfway point. Two more hill climbs to come
:29:23. > :29:32.and there are the three of them together. Christelle Daunay, Valeria
:29:33. > :29:37.Straneo and Elvan Abeylegesse. You're talking about these three and
:29:38. > :29:40.I like someone like Christelle Daunay, when you look at
:29:41. > :29:45.Championship results, you look at what they have done before this,
:29:46. > :29:52.anyone who has run a personal best or close to it, it is preparation
:29:53. > :29:56.for these championships. I like what Christelle Daunay has been doing,
:29:57. > :30:06.the races she has been running going into this. That time there, with the
:30:07. > :30:10.type of course we have, it is pretty good running for that lead group.
:30:11. > :30:27.Lisa Christina Nemec is dropping off, Jessica Augusto biding her
:30:28. > :30:30.time. Abeylegesse say is still inexperienced. Straneo, if nothing
:30:31. > :30:37.else, we know from how well she performed in Moscow last year that
:30:38. > :30:42.she is mentally tough. Daunay, maybe coming into this with the first
:30:43. > :30:50.chance of a big, big win for her. And will keep them inside as she
:30:51. > :30:54.moves up, and issue goes into fourth position in the next minute or two,
:30:55. > :30:58.she will think she has every opportunity. And the secret for her
:30:59. > :31:02.is to keep it steady, don't just accelerate because there is an
:31:03. > :31:09.athlete in your site. And as they go across the bridge, Augusto Moose
:31:10. > :31:16.threateningly close to the leading group. Doing it steadily, gradually,
:31:17. > :31:20.knowing the hills will take their toll. Straneo ran like this in
:31:21. > :31:26.Moscow and ended up with a silver medal. Daunay and Abeylegesse say,
:31:27. > :31:34.but three of those together, setting off on the last two laps of the
:31:35. > :31:39.marathon. The drama of the marathon always unfolds in the second half of
:31:40. > :31:43.the race and here we are into the second half. The former European
:31:44. > :31:48.cross-country champion Jennifer Augusto, an accomplished to .24
:31:49. > :32:07.marathon runner -- two point these three running together in a
:32:08. > :32:11.terrific performance, I am sure triathlon magazines and triathlete
:32:12. > :32:16.followers and the triathletes themselves will be marvelling at
:32:17. > :32:20.this performance. This is a little incentive. I have talked a lot to
:32:21. > :32:23.Alistair Brownlee about running across the real world-class distance
:32:24. > :32:28.runners on the roads all the track and he will see this performance and
:32:29. > :32:34.think, I would like to be in amongst that. He would be very good at ten
:32:35. > :32:41.kilometres, could he live with the marathon? At the halfway, those in
:32:42. > :32:45.the team competition are still in with a medal chance, with Italy
:32:46. > :32:47.leading it. Straneo helping their case, in Churchill as well. Portugal
:32:48. > :33:02.look strong. -- in Buhler is back in 20 Ninth Place and
:33:03. > :33:05.is going a little further back through the field, so the two who
:33:06. > :33:12.are well up there running really well, Spirig included, will hope
:33:13. > :33:15.their third counter can keep going. The Russians will be strong but
:33:16. > :33:22.Switzerland are still in with a chance of 18 medal. Is Augusto
:33:23. > :33:27.catching these three, Paula? Is the gap working together a little bit?
:33:28. > :33:33.Nemec going with Augusto, they look closer than a couple of minutes ago.
:33:34. > :33:37.I think she is, she closed two seconds through the park section
:33:38. > :33:42.from 20 kilometres to the half marathon point. I am quite pleased
:33:43. > :33:48.with the way Nemec has latched onto her because it looked as if with the
:33:49. > :33:53.speed Augusto went past, she would leave Nemec in her slipstream but
:33:54. > :33:59.she has found new energy and running partner to work with. But that gap
:34:00. > :34:03.is closing and it is the experience of Augusto showing here, although
:34:04. > :34:08.she is chasing two very experienced athletes as well in the form of
:34:09. > :34:13.Straneo and Daunay, who are pacing this really well. You can see the
:34:14. > :34:17.relaxation on their faces. Abeylegesse say is a very good
:34:18. > :34:20.runner, but I don't think she has the marathon racing experience of
:34:21. > :34:23.the two athletes she is running with, which is why she is sitting in
:34:24. > :34:46.behind the two of them. Nice Daunay and Straneo actually run
:34:47. > :34:49.together -- ran together at the World Championships, and Daunay
:34:50. > :34:53.finished ahead of the Italian. They will be very used to running with
:34:54. > :34:59.each other, and many of these athletes know each other so well.
:35:00. > :35:03.Those are the standings that I mentioned halfway with the team
:35:04. > :35:07.competitions. It is great to see Switzerland at the moment in a medal
:35:08. > :35:14.position. Did we explain that that is the sum of their time is the sum
:35:15. > :35:17.of there? It does mean if you are isolated and running in no man's
:35:18. > :35:24.land, how fast you run the still matter to the team score. Yes, as I
:35:25. > :35:31.was saying, Buhler will have half of Switzerland saying, keep going. I
:35:32. > :35:35.have a horrible suspicion that the three Russians are running together
:35:36. > :35:42.may well move their way through an end up pipping Switzerland.
:35:43. > :35:52.At the moment, Daunay, Straneo and Abeylegesse say with a lead of
:35:53. > :35:59.around nine or ten seconds to Augusto and Nemec, just behind them.
:36:00. > :36:04.And when they make the turn, they will be able to see the chasing pair
:36:05. > :36:11.and they will just be coming into the picture. There they are. That
:36:12. > :36:17.gap, I make it about ten seconds at the moment. Is it ten seconds? 10-15
:36:18. > :36:24.seconds, I think, depending on how much they made up. It was 17 at half
:36:25. > :36:29.marathon point. They will now work together and given away that are two
:36:30. > :36:34.chasing athletes -- given the way that the two chasing athletes
:36:35. > :36:39.attacked the incline last time, they will make up ground going up that
:36:40. > :36:47.hill. I think the gap has closed a little bit, Paula. If you use that
:36:48. > :36:53.traffic island as a marker, it is certainly a lot less than the 17
:36:54. > :36:54.seconds it was not so long ago. So these three, when they make the
:36:55. > :37:10.turn, will get a very good view. I just wonder whether this time
:37:11. > :37:14.around, it wasn't these three, it was Nemec on the hell last time you
:37:15. > :37:19.wonder whether or not on the hell they end up watching each other a
:37:20. > :37:22.little bit and that gap can close a little more. Augusto has been very
:37:23. > :37:31.good at making good judgements so far, keeping them inside -- in
:37:32. > :37:36.sight. She will be aware that they are not getting any further away
:37:37. > :37:41.from home. 16 seconds, you were right. She has just got to keep
:37:42. > :37:46.that. It is just getting closer all the time. Nemec is saying, we can
:37:47. > :37:51.get back to these if we work together. I am thinking that Nemec
:37:52. > :37:56.went through a bad patch in that park, because she was looking very
:37:57. > :38:00.good up the hill a second time and then she really seems to struggle
:38:01. > :38:04.and drop off quite quickly and now she seems to have found her rhythm
:38:05. > :38:10.again and is working well with Augusto to work back towards these
:38:11. > :38:13.three, who do look really relaxed. Different styles of concentration on
:38:14. > :38:17.their face, but nobody really showing signs of strain at this
:38:18. > :38:22.point and I think they are starting to think where they might want to
:38:23. > :38:28.make an attack, and also taking advantage of this section, as they
:38:29. > :38:30.come into here, to see exactly what is happening behind and how those
:38:31. > :38:47.other athletes are faring. Big crowds down in the start slash
:38:48. > :38:55.finish area. Straneo is loving this. High-fiving the crowd. She is really
:38:56. > :38:59.relaxed. She is a mother and she probably spotted that there's a girl
:39:00. > :39:02.having a great time. I don't think she is any relation but she just
:39:03. > :39:10.wanted to reward them, saying thank you the standing out in the rain and
:39:11. > :39:13.encouraging them. -- for standing. Various Spirig, the Olympic
:39:14. > :39:25.triathlete champion, who is struggling. She has lost a lot of
:39:26. > :39:29.ground to her team-mate. The Swiss really did attack this in the early
:39:30. > :39:35.stages. You can understand why, with the excitement of a course where
:39:36. > :39:42.they certainly know the streets well, if not this particular
:39:43. > :39:46.course, and all of the support out there, she needs to keep going.
:39:47. > :39:53.Switzerland are still in with a chance. These three are relaxed, I
:39:54. > :39:59.think all three of them are looking fairly relaxed to me. Daunay, it
:40:00. > :40:05.will be interesting up the hill next time around, to see what happens,
:40:06. > :40:10.see if any of them start to push on. If I had to put money on it now, the
:40:11. > :40:13.first person to drop off that group, I would go with Abeylegesse say,
:40:14. > :40:19.because of how she struggled up the hill, but she did get back into
:40:20. > :40:23.contact quickly and she is quite a deceptive athlete to read from her
:40:24. > :40:26.facial expressions and from the other athletes, from the way that
:40:27. > :40:30.she sounds when she is running alongside you, you don't get a lot
:40:31. > :40:39.of information about when she is struggling until she does drift back
:40:40. > :40:43.from the back of the group. So the imposing towers Grossmunster in the
:40:44. > :40:50.background, welcoming the marathon runners back onto the other side of
:40:51. > :41:01.the river. Take a left turn here, Daunay just taking gel on board.
:41:02. > :41:10.Aguilar and Incerti move away. Italy are looking good in the team race.
:41:11. > :41:16.Through 25 K. I don't think that is 16 seconds, let's see what it is. 11
:41:17. > :41:23.seconds, and the gap is closing all the time. Abeylegesse E is at the
:41:24. > :41:28.back of the lead group, Augusto has very much got them in her sides.
:41:29. > :41:40.Nemec, having tried to go with Augusto, has a bit of a gap between
:41:41. > :41:44.herself and the Portuguese athlete. Still a bit of rain in the air, but
:41:45. > :41:49.it is very good conditions for the marathon runners. Incerti coming
:41:50. > :41:56.through for Italy, the defending champion, with Aguilar of Spain.
:41:57. > :42:06.Then the first of the Swiss athletes, working hard up that
:42:07. > :42:14.little rise, Neuenschwander. Spirig is starting to struggle their,
:42:15. > :42:15.shorter stride length is now from the triathlete, slowing down quite
:42:16. > :42:32.measurably. -- stride lengths. Plenty of coffee shops and cake
:42:33. > :42:36.houses, whatever you want to call them, for people to watch the
:42:37. > :42:41.marathon and pop off, have a bit of a break, lucky them. There is good
:42:42. > :42:44.support out on the streets there as people are coming out on this
:42:45. > :42:50.Saturday morning to cheer on their own. Neuenschwander and the Spirig
:42:51. > :43:00.going pretty well, but that team race is something which is getting a
:43:01. > :43:04.bit tighter now -- and Spirig. Not surprising, concentrating on
:43:05. > :43:09.Spirig, the Swiss sports personality of the year last year, she won the
:43:10. > :43:14.female section. Guess who won the male section once again? Roger
:43:15. > :43:23.Federer. It wasn't a quiz, but you were quick. Do they have a short
:43:24. > :43:33.list of ten? Yes. Who are the other nine? We can tell you one of them
:43:34. > :43:40.from last night. He will be in this year's. I cannot name nine, I have
:43:41. > :43:46.just racked my brains. Wawrinka, he is one. Shall we keep that one going
:43:47. > :43:53.over the next hour? Just watch this, when she takes drinks, you are
:43:54. > :43:59.allowed to take whatever you want, some people take gel, but she has a
:44:00. > :44:04.sack of water, so she is drinking a carbohydrate fluid from inside the
:44:05. > :44:11.bottle and spraying the water all over herself to cool herself down.
:44:12. > :44:18.She is -- it is not particularly hot but she has obviously planned for a
:44:19. > :44:22.warm and humid marathon. Here we are on the hell and Paul are correctly
:44:23. > :44:27.predicted Abeylegesse they will struggle this time around. --
:44:28. > :44:33.Paulo. I think Straneo and Daunay are very well prepared for this
:44:34. > :44:37.European Championships marathon and look relaxed, look as though they
:44:38. > :44:42.are taking the hill each time in the way that you should, not attack it
:44:43. > :44:48.too much. But the gap between the three, particularly Abeylegesse,
:44:49. > :44:51.Augusto will see the Turkish athlete is dropping of these two and give
:44:52. > :44:58.her more encouragement. Is she the one time in this perfectly.
:44:59. > :45:02.Interestingly is how they do when they come up off the hill and settle
:45:03. > :45:07.again. ABBA legacy doesn't want to get it into her mind that she will
:45:08. > :45:12.lose ground -- Abeylegesse. She is letting them go so she can level it
:45:13. > :45:16.up on the flat. She did it at the first two times, I wonder if she can
:45:17. > :45:22.do it on the third time. They turn again, the two leaders pulling a few
:45:23. > :45:32.yards away. Daunay and Straneo, the Italian, who likes to be in the
:45:33. > :45:34.front. We saw her leading in the World Championships last year, as we
:45:35. > :45:39.look at the fourth-place coming around, I think she is fifth,
:45:40. > :45:51.actually, Nemec. Ahead of her, Augusto and then Abeylegesse A.
:45:52. > :45:56.Jessica Augusto looks like she is running smoothly. If you look at the
:45:57. > :46:02.gap, it is actually less than the gap from Jessica Augusto and -- back
:46:03. > :46:08.to Lisa Christina Nemec. She will gain a lot of encouragement. It will
:46:09. > :46:14.show that her plan is working, her pace has been steady and consistent
:46:15. > :46:18.and she is getting rewards by running back into medal contention
:46:19. > :46:24.and hopefully getting back on terms with the leaders. When they turn
:46:25. > :46:29.here, you can see by the angle of the road how steep this is. There is
:46:30. > :46:34.Elvan Abeylegesse who is taking it steady. Jessica Augusto is working
:46:35. > :46:41.hard and is pulling away from Lisa Christina Nemec. She is looking
:46:42. > :46:48.there, Lisa Christina Nemec, eyes firmly set ahead. When they turn
:46:49. > :46:55.this corner, there is that hill. You can see them working up this hill.
:46:56. > :47:00.It is so tough, it really is. There is Jessica Augusto, smoothly into
:47:01. > :47:05.it, within shooting distance of Elvan Abeylegesse for the first
:47:06. > :47:12.time. Two very good distance runners. Jessica is timing it, will
:47:13. > :47:18.we see drama in the marathon? It is a long drag. Elvan Abeylegesse
:47:19. > :47:26.leaning forward, Christelle Daunay in second place. Jessica Augusto
:47:27. > :47:29.will get a real boost if she can catch Elvan Abeylegesse on the
:47:30. > :47:38.hill. I wonder if Elvan Abeylegesse, when it levels out, as it eventually
:47:39. > :47:46.does, they turn again, Valeria Straneo has opened up a few yards. I
:47:47. > :47:50.think the last time up the hill, Christelle Daunay did the same thing
:47:51. > :47:55.drifted off a little bit towards the top and then made it up as they
:47:56. > :48:00.levelled out onto the flat bed in front of the university and started
:48:01. > :48:11.to come down the hill. Is testing -- bits. -- it is testing. There is
:48:12. > :48:16.another ten kilometres lap to come. Elvan Abeylegesse is not comfortable
:48:17. > :48:25.here. Jessica Augusto is coming right past her. She barely gave her
:48:26. > :48:39.a glance. Do what your coach tells you, go straight past them, do not
:48:40. > :48:45.give them a hint of hanging on. As they come across that great
:48:46. > :48:54.viewpoint over the city, Valeria Straneo is leading, followed by
:48:55. > :48:58.Christelle Daunay. It is tough, you have to judge this right, you make
:48:59. > :49:04.an assumption that you are coming down well, you think you can close a
:49:05. > :49:09.gap, it you do not put the effort end, just Tuesday with the
:49:10. > :49:13.competitor and then hope you can close the gap. That hill is so
:49:14. > :49:18.severe, it must be in their minds, they have to decide how to play it
:49:19. > :49:23.and recovering from it is the other thing. It is no good to be good up
:49:24. > :49:32.the hill, you need to be good coming down the hill as well. There is the
:49:33. > :49:39.defending champion, Anna Incerti. She is running strongly. An lot will
:49:40. > :49:51.change, this hill is having an effect -- an awful lot will change.
:49:52. > :49:56.There is the Swiss competitor. There is the Swiss sports personality of
:49:57. > :50:02.the year. Fionnuala Britton coming back again, that is good to see, I
:50:03. > :50:06.am pleased to see her getting competitive. She is great up the
:50:07. > :50:11.hills when it comes to cross-country running and she looks equally
:50:12. > :50:17.distinguished here. Fionnuala Britton moving into ninth position.
:50:18. > :50:22.She goes past Nicola Spirig. It looks as though she is running well
:50:23. > :50:31.again. She is going strong up the hill. Just to go back to the team
:50:32. > :50:39.scenario, Ireland are in seventh place, Switzerland are still hanging
:50:40. > :50:47.on. The split is letting us know the gaps. Alessandra Aguilar there. She
:50:48. > :50:54.will still have her sites on something. Jessica Augusto looks so
:50:55. > :50:57.-- strong, but you would think that the experience of Valeria Straneo
:50:58. > :51:02.and Christelle Daunay, it can still go wrong. I am pleased to say that
:51:03. > :51:08.the Estonian triplets are still going well. They are in the team
:51:09. > :51:15.race, but three of them. As far as the team competition is concerned,
:51:16. > :51:25.there is only one team behind them, the Swedish contingent. At the
:51:26. > :51:31.highest point, Fionnuala Britton needs to think about her
:51:32. > :51:38.preparation. When you're making your debut, you making plans, planning
:51:39. > :51:44.your working with the drinks, coming into this, she perhaps had an idea,
:51:45. > :51:49.but decided that she had a few weeks before, it is a quick decision, it
:51:50. > :51:54.does not give you much chance to practice, perhaps she has not got
:51:55. > :51:59.comfortable with her tactics coming into this race. Now, as the race
:52:00. > :52:05.goes on, she's becoming more comfortable and she looks better. I
:52:06. > :52:11.wonder whether Jessica Augusto put too much effort into that hill. Look
:52:12. > :52:17.what has happened. Elvan Abeylegesse has got away from her. Jessica
:52:18. > :52:23.Augusto is probably as close to that lead, but Elvan Abeylegesse may be
:52:24. > :52:30.resurgent again. Certainly she did not enjoy the hill. Even if she gets
:52:31. > :52:35.back to these two, it will be on her mind, she knows she has to do with a
:52:36. > :52:41.gain on the last lap and there will not be as much time to make up
:52:42. > :52:45.ground again -- again. She looks as though she is trying to get back,
:52:46. > :52:56.but she knows the hill is not her strong point. The marathon is a real
:52:57. > :53:01.test of stamina and this course is making it an extra test and if you
:53:02. > :53:04.look at the approach to the hill, clearly Elvan Abeylegesse in third
:53:05. > :53:09.place again, is not comfortable on the hill. Jessica Augusto was
:53:10. > :53:16.comfortable and now we are looking at four athlete and I am sure that
:53:17. > :53:21.even now, things will change. -- athletes. Jessica Augusto has always
:53:22. > :53:25.looked to be in control, set off by grows steadily and worked wade
:53:26. > :53:34.through, for a moment was in third place, but conceded it -- works her
:53:35. > :53:37.way through. Christelle Daunay decided on the hill but she would
:53:38. > :53:47.let Valeria Straneo take it away and give her a gap and then close her
:53:48. > :53:54.down. They are coming towards the park, the parkland alongside the
:53:55. > :54:00.lake. Valeria Straneo being worse she has been all the time, at the
:54:01. > :54:05.front, happy to be there -- being where she has been all the time.
:54:06. > :54:11.They are running strongly and fast, particularly considering the
:54:12. > :54:15.strenuous nature of this course. I think they both look very relaxed
:54:16. > :54:20.and comfortable. Obviously fatigue is starting to play a role at this
:54:21. > :54:27.stage, but they look very in control of their effort and they are
:54:28. > :54:31.managing their very well. As is Jessica Augusto and Elvan
:54:32. > :54:42.Abeylegesse is more comfortable on the downhill sections. She is able
:54:43. > :54:57.to relax and run fast. She is making up the gap again, it is very fast
:54:58. > :55:08.running according to The Times. On that point, in terms of running
:55:09. > :55:14.marathons and what you wear and how that changes over the years,
:55:15. > :55:20.particularly for the women, there are all sorts of options, because
:55:21. > :55:25.Valeria Straneo, what she is wearing and Elvan Abeylegesse, Christelle
:55:26. > :55:29.Daunay, it is personal preference. It is personal preference, some
:55:30. > :55:34.consideration for weather conditions as well, and also what team kit is
:55:35. > :55:41.provided and what is the choice you have to work from. Some athletes
:55:42. > :55:45.prefer to race in a crop top like Jessica Augusto and others prefer
:55:46. > :55:50.the best and shorts like Elvan Abeylegesse. It comes down to
:55:51. > :55:56.comfort, what you wear when you are training and what you like to wear
:55:57. > :56:05.when you are racing. Heart conditions can make you feel more
:56:06. > :56:10.ready to race. -- hot. Elvan Abeylegesse is wearing a cap as
:56:11. > :56:17.well. Not much sunshine. Just as I say that, as little bit of blue sky
:56:18. > :56:21.has appeared. Already preparations are underway for the programme this
:56:22. > :56:28.afternoon. The marathon runners down in the city centre not quite getting
:56:29. > :56:33.the benefit of a bit of sunshine, but really good conditions. I am not
:56:34. > :56:48.sure they need this Bray on a day like this. She is moving well. The
:56:49. > :56:55.pace has been pretty much the same. The last few splits have still being
:56:56. > :57:04.good running considering that hill is so difficult. It is interesting
:57:05. > :57:09.to see that the splits are as consistent as they are. That is
:57:10. > :57:23.because we have the uphill and downhill section in the same
:57:24. > :57:27.sections. I do not think looking at the trees in the stadium that there
:57:28. > :57:47.is a lot of Windsor. They will have to content with that. -- wind. I can
:57:48. > :57:54.smell Coffey! -- coffee. When I used to go to the football match and
:57:55. > :58:06.Paula is in the Bovril seat that we used to refer to. Do they still have
:58:07. > :58:16.Bovril at the football? The football season starts today. Good luck to
:58:17. > :58:23.everyone today. Start of a new football season. A big football area
:58:24. > :58:44.here in is Iraq, a couple of teams play in front front of us -- 's Iraq
:58:45. > :58:49.full -- 's Iraq. -- Zurich. Lisa Christina Nemec is really
:58:50. > :58:55.struggling. Jessica Augusto, 18 seconds behind, Lisa Christina Nemec
:58:56. > :59:06.is going backwards and Anna Incerti will think about catching her. She
:59:07. > :59:10.has another look at her watch. There is a bit of a psychological blow for
:59:11. > :59:21.Jessica Augusto. She has been making up ground. She has made up that gap
:59:22. > :59:27.too much less than that and now has lost. She is still running strongly
:59:28. > :59:31.and perhaps get closer again, but perhaps she has found out that the
:59:32. > :59:39.two ahead of hers still have good running in their legs. That split
:59:40. > :59:51.was slightly the slowest. The leaders have slowed slightly. These
:59:52. > :59:56.two, Christelle Daunay, looking for the bottles for -- from the team
:59:57. > :00:04.members, Valeria Straneo takes hers with no problem, 20 of room given
:00:05. > :00:11.the lead groups and it is not too packed. -- plenty of room. Elvan
:00:12. > :00:26.Abeylegesse did not seem to have anyone from her team earlier. We
:00:27. > :00:30.will see if she grabs a bottle. Speak she has had them placed there,
:00:31. > :00:38.there's nobody from her team but it is on the table. Sometimes it is
:00:39. > :00:44.easy to pick it up the table, especially if the team official
:00:45. > :00:49.hasn't done the job before, they need to hold it on the flat of their
:00:50. > :00:52.palm, it makes it easier. And Augusto has hers marked with a
:00:53. > :00:56.Portuguese flag, a tale over from the major city marathons where you
:00:57. > :01:04.have to pick it up from the table and want to be able to recognise it
:01:05. > :01:09.as you are coming in. On the previous lap, I saw Daunay put her
:01:10. > :01:12.hand up as if to say, handed to me, and when she got there, they did
:01:13. > :01:17.handed to her, rather than leaving it on the table. Anyway, drink
:01:18. > :01:41.safely negotiated. Few Fionnuala Britton starting to make
:01:42. > :01:53.some progress. I can't see her making her way up much further,
:01:54. > :01:57.though. So through the park, alongside the lake, twisting and
:01:58. > :02:04.turning section, there is the matting over the grass, and then
:02:05. > :02:11.they will come onto the road. That was the halfway mark one lap to go.
:02:12. > :02:15.So this time, they are coming towards the end of their third big
:02:16. > :02:22.lap and then they will be heading out for the last time on the ten
:02:23. > :02:27.kilometre loop. Augusto, issue close enough? -- Ichi. Is she going to
:02:28. > :02:33.have to rely on one of them dropping back closer to her? Still moving OK.
:02:34. > :02:37.As we look further down the field, the team race is still very much up
:02:38. > :02:45.for grabs, and position is changing all the time. I think a lot of
:02:46. > :02:50.people are struggling. This course, as was suggested, is going to be
:02:51. > :02:55.tough and not too many people are coping all that well. Spirig has
:02:56. > :03:00.dropped down to 15th place after setting out in the lead group, the
:03:01. > :03:10.triathlete is now struggling somewhat. And I think that will be
:03:11. > :03:19.do badly delayed due to fact that she hasn't got the specific time on
:03:20. > :03:25.her legs for marathon training -- that'll be due to the fact. It is
:03:26. > :03:30.running on tarmac, basically, for 26 miles, which you do need preparation
:03:31. > :03:34.for. You cannot run it after crosstraining, which is what she is
:03:35. > :03:41.essentially trying to do, with the swimming and bike background that
:03:42. > :03:46.she has. Italy and Portugal have actually got three counters through
:03:47. > :03:50.the 30 kilometre point. Just as I say that, the computer is telling me
:03:51. > :03:55.that the next team to have three through our Russia, they have moved
:03:56. > :04:02.into the top three, partly because Spirig is just drifting back through
:04:03. > :04:07.the field and losing time. These two are gaining, if anything, in terms
:04:08. > :04:13.of their stature in this race, but not on Augusto, she still has them
:04:14. > :04:17.in sight, it is still a gap that can be closed, and things can happen on
:04:18. > :04:23.this last lap, that last big hill, or couple of sections of the hill,
:04:24. > :04:28.to content with. Augusto, Brendan, she might think she is tired, they
:04:29. > :04:35.have got to be tired, and anything can happen in this last six or seven
:04:36. > :04:41.miles. It is still a case of application to the task. She has run
:04:42. > :04:46.a controlled race. She had that uphill path where she ran extremely
:04:47. > :04:52.well, maybe got a little bit carried away, but she caught Abeylegesse and
:04:53. > :04:58.passed her, and as she looks down the road, there are the leaders.
:04:59. > :05:05.Daunay of France, the French record-holder for 10,000m, the half
:05:06. > :05:20.marathon and the marathon. And on that bend, Straneo, who ran so well
:05:21. > :05:23.in the World Championships. It is a good vantage point from the bridge,
:05:24. > :05:27.you see the athletes on eight occasions coming back and forth and
:05:28. > :05:37.the two of them are locked together in battle. Stride for stride, and I
:05:38. > :05:40.wonder, I imagine, Paula, the hill will be starting to tick over in
:05:41. > :05:45.your mind, because that could be where the race is won or lost.
:05:46. > :05:51.Certainly, I think the strategies will be able starting to take over
:05:52. > :05:54.in their mind, they will be trying to gather as much information about
:05:55. > :05:58.each other and how they seem to be feeling in the race and how they
:05:59. > :06:02.have felt on this course, particularly in areas where they can
:06:03. > :06:05.gain a second or two over their rival and are getting ready to
:06:06. > :06:11.gather themselves for when that attack might come on this last lap.
:06:12. > :06:16.On the switchback, they will have taken the chance to see how big the
:06:17. > :06:21.gap was too Augusto, and maybe at the drinks station, to get some
:06:22. > :06:25.information from the official. But those two at the front are thinking
:06:26. > :06:33.more about what they need to do to win the race rather than what they
:06:34. > :06:39.need to do to hang onto a medal. Abeylegesse say, the worst position,
:06:40. > :06:43.you could argue to be in, in a marathon, fourth place. All she can
:06:44. > :06:47.hope for is she finds something on this last lap, but the three ahead
:06:48. > :06:55.of very experienced athletes, three who you think have made the right
:06:56. > :07:00.judgements and as Paula said, they will be thinking how they can try
:07:01. > :07:04.and win this now, with Augusto thinking she can keep going and be
:07:05. > :07:11.strong enough to pick one of them of. -- off. A quick correction on
:07:12. > :07:23.the team, Switzerland are just hanging on, Beth Gerd Kanter came
:07:24. > :07:28.through late, -- the third counter. So they do have a slim lead, but I'm
:07:29. > :07:35.not sure how much longer it will last. Portugal still have a chance
:07:36. > :07:39.of beating Italy as far as the team race is conserved, there is only a
:07:40. > :07:46.couple of minutes. It might sound like a lot, but it is amazing how
:07:47. > :07:51.over three athletes, it isn't a lot. I think as far as Italy are
:07:52. > :07:55.concerned, it is good that Straneo is going well and Incerti, their
:07:56. > :08:03.second counter, is moving through the field, rather than fading. There
:08:04. > :08:11.are the leaders. Those two, still nobody making a move, it is a case
:08:12. > :08:15.of waiting. That hill, we have seen them have a different approach to
:08:16. > :08:20.the hill, we have seen different tactics being employed, as we look
:08:21. > :08:26.at the third-place runner, Jennifer Augusto, who, remember, won a silver
:08:27. > :08:31.medal in the 10,000m in 2010 in Barcelona and, incidentally, on that
:08:32. > :08:35.day, she finished behind the athlete right behind her now, Abeylegesse.
:08:36. > :08:43.Nemec is still hanging on in fifth place. We missed out Abeylegesse say
:08:44. > :08:50.on that swoop from the camera. If she is still there, that is. Nemec
:08:51. > :08:57.is running smoothly and steadily and you can see she can just see
:08:58. > :09:02.Abeylegesse as they come around the corner, she is just ahead of the
:09:03. > :09:07.cyclist accompanying her, who are there to protect the athletes, to
:09:08. > :09:12.stop anybody running onto the cause, as we have seen mad priests do in
:09:13. > :09:17.the past. It is harder to ride a bike up the hill by running and when
:09:18. > :09:28.you are running, you are passing most of the cyclists. Speak for
:09:29. > :09:33.yourself. I used to. So this is the little turnaround. It brings them
:09:34. > :09:43.back towards the start finish line and then they know they are going to
:09:44. > :09:57.be starting this last lap. So probably about 30 minutes or so of
:09:58. > :10:00.running left. Jennifer Augusto just negotiating that corner. Abeylegesse
:10:01. > :10:22.just struggling a little bit. It looks as if she is labouring now,
:10:23. > :10:24.Abeylegesse. As we look over this beautiful city of Zurich, and the
:10:25. > :10:30.Italian team still leading the team race. It looks like a Portuguese
:10:31. > :10:35.team are in second place, and Switzerland in third, but everything
:10:36. > :10:40.can change. If one athlete drop side, it blows the thing completely.
:10:41. > :10:49.But these two together, although the camera does fall short and that, you
:10:50. > :10:52.can see the race really is on -- does shorten that. Will this be the
:10:53. > :10:58.finishing order? I don't know, I have seen it so many times in the
:10:59. > :11:03.marathon, it does change. You come up to two hours, the body runs out
:11:04. > :11:09.of energy. It is how well they have stored the energy, including those
:11:10. > :11:13.gel drinks. In this case, beyond the 20 mile point, the to our point,
:11:14. > :11:22.they have a climate which must be significant in a race like this. --
:11:23. > :11:25.a climb. She is still running pretty well. I am surprised at the place
:11:26. > :11:32.that has been maintained, given the hill. OK, in terms of 2:20
:11:33. > :11:38.marathons, we weren't going to get that here today, but they are
:11:39. > :11:45.running at a good pace and Straneo, her best is only 2:23, I say only,
:11:46. > :11:53.and they have not been far outside that pays all the way and for
:11:54. > :11:59.Daunay, this is a really good pace. She has been in good heart marathon
:12:00. > :12:05.pace, 68.48 this year, not far off her personal best. We suspected they
:12:06. > :12:09.might slow in this next section, we will get a split in a little while.
:12:10. > :12:17.We suspect it might be a little slower, but that is to be expected,
:12:18. > :12:23.I think. It is a tough course, attritional. Paulo, at this point,
:12:24. > :12:29.would the hill be on your mind would you be thinking about gauging your
:12:30. > :12:35.effort or planning it -- Paula? I would be planning for it, planning
:12:36. > :12:42.how I am going to get up that hill, and depending on how I was feeling,
:12:43. > :12:47.gauging how the others were responding up the hill. A good
:12:48. > :12:53.tactic is to attack hard on the last section of the hill and maintain it
:12:54. > :12:58.over the hill. A lot of athletes have made a ground there because
:12:59. > :13:03.some are taking time to recover from the effort of running up the hill,
:13:04. > :13:08.so it is a good place to make up ground if you maintain the effort in
:13:09. > :13:18.the final part of the uphill section into the flat section. So back the
:13:19. > :13:25.Bahnhofstrasse -- back-up the Bahnhofstrasse. Loads of rumours
:13:26. > :13:32.about what is buried here, in terms of where they keep their money,
:13:33. > :13:41.whether little gnomes are -- where the little gnomes R. Where all the
:13:42. > :13:45.gold is stored. Who knows? So Augusto, trying to hold a position,
:13:46. > :13:52.trying to keep them inside, hoping she can be strong up the hill,
:13:53. > :13:56.hoping one of them falls apart. But she is certainly not closing on them
:13:57. > :14:02.anymore. If anything, they are moving away slightly. I think
:14:03. > :14:06.everybody is slowing down in these latter stages. Not by a lot, not
:14:07. > :14:14.enough to give too much hope to those behind, but these two are
:14:15. > :14:18.locked together. I think the other factor is that after the first five
:14:19. > :14:23.kilometres section of the last ten kilometres, if you like, it is a
:14:24. > :14:29.good place to sit back and little bit and gather yourself to cancer
:14:30. > :14:34.and get prepared for any efforts for the last five kilometres -- gather
:14:35. > :14:38.yourself to counter. There you can see the purple line we have talked
:14:39. > :14:42.about, it replaces the blue line which usually marks the shortest
:14:43. > :14:45.line that the marathon course is measured along and Abigail Alessi is
:14:46. > :14:53.doing a good job of running along that line. -- avec
:14:54. > :14:59.if you are choosing the best line, the best place to run on tired legs,
:15:00. > :15:02.it is along the crest of the camber, rather than having one they
:15:03. > :15:11.can essentially shorter than the other. -- one leg. The first to have
:15:12. > :15:21.crossed the bridge and running alongside the river before they have
:15:22. > :15:26.that incredibly difficult climb. This time, Valeria Straneo wants to
:15:27. > :15:32.be in the lead before they get to that Klein. Remember, the last
:15:33. > :15:41.couple of times, we have seen a slightly different approach --
:15:42. > :15:46.climb. The grout between Jessica Augusto in third place has grown --
:15:47. > :15:55.gap. She needs to conserve herself, decide how to run on that hill. The
:15:56. > :16:05.gap behind her, back to Elvan Abeylegesse looks as though that has
:16:06. > :16:10.been increasing. They will come across the cobbles on the bridge.
:16:11. > :16:15.You can see the figure of one of the next athletes, Elvan Abeylegesse,
:16:16. > :16:21.she is quite a long way behind Jessica Augusto. It looks as though,
:16:22. > :16:28.unless we have a real drama on this hill, as Elvan Abeylegesse crosses
:16:29. > :16:33.in the shadow of the Twin Towers, there are she turns left and gets
:16:34. > :16:39.the crowd, get some support and she needs it, remember how badly she
:16:40. > :16:44.struggled up that hill and she must be thinking that she is losing that
:16:45. > :16:49.place. Jessica Augusto, third place, 20 seconds behind the leading pair
:16:50. > :16:53.and Elvan Abeylegesse is a minute behind. The first three look as
:16:54. > :17:01.though they are clear and will be the first three, but we do not know
:17:02. > :17:07.the final positions. Elvan Abeylegesse will come under attack
:17:08. > :17:10.from Lisa Christina Nemec. Elvan Abeylegesse is very tired. They did
:17:11. > :17:14.not slow down over the five kilometres, they looked as though
:17:15. > :17:20.they were tiring, but they ran a little bit quicker. I think that is
:17:21. > :17:24.why we saw the gap grows slightly and Jessica Augusto has picked up
:17:25. > :17:32.her pace, but so has the leading pair. Is that Jonathan Edwards? He
:17:33. > :17:51.has not climbed that many stairs, noway! A great vantage point, one of
:17:52. > :18:00.those twin towers. -- no way! That towers over the city, that building.
:18:01. > :18:05.Towering over this marathon, the two athletes, Valeria Straneo and
:18:06. > :18:10.Christelle Daunay. What will happen here? This could be the pivotal
:18:11. > :18:15.point of this race, can Jessica Augusto make any inroads into the
:18:16. > :18:19.lead? They are the athletes in the medal positions and this hill goes
:18:20. > :18:23.up one section and then it goes up gradually and they have another
:18:24. > :18:28.steep section and this is where suddenly it can all fall apart for
:18:29. > :18:32.you, you think you are OK and that is the trouble with marathon
:18:33. > :18:38.running, when it goes, it goes altogether. In a race like this, he
:18:39. > :18:47.would have been saying that loud and clear. There are still streaming
:18:48. > :18:53.through and the gaps have opened. This is a difficult marathon. The
:18:54. > :18:57.site tells them that they have a climb ahead and it will be
:18:58. > :19:01.interesting to see how that involves. Three athletes look as
:19:02. > :19:09.though they are clear. Which three will come back for the medals, well,
:19:10. > :19:20.I would like to see. Here we are further down the field. There is the
:19:21. > :19:26.Swiss athlete. Maja Neuenschwander there and the Spanish runner. Here
:19:27. > :19:30.we are back with the leaders, halfway through this difficult
:19:31. > :19:36.uphill. We will swing around here and climb and climb. The very last
:19:37. > :19:41.one is the one which will be the decider. This time, Christelle
:19:42. > :19:45.Daunay of France stays with Valeria Straneo, but this looks as though
:19:46. > :19:49.Valeria Straneo is making a move and look at Jessica Augusto in the
:19:50. > :19:53.bronze medal position. She has been a silver medallist in the European
:19:54. > :19:59.Championships at 10,000 metres, we have seen her run well on the roads
:20:00. > :20:04.in the past and we have seen her in the Great North Run. Elvan
:20:05. > :20:12.Abeylegesse is under pressure, that hill has not suited her. She will
:20:13. > :20:16.have found it difficult on the Hill. That is what happened last time, she
:20:17. > :20:25.recovered last time, but I wonder if she will recover this time. That has
:20:26. > :20:29.been her downfall today, the hill, but Elvan Abeylegesse has not been
:20:30. > :20:33.able to content with it. Jessica Augusto has done OK, but she is
:20:34. > :20:38.watching the two ahead of her, still staying strong, still working
:20:39. > :20:43.together. When you get into the steep section, it will be
:20:44. > :20:53.interesting to see if Christelle Daunay lets Valeria Straneo push on.
:20:54. > :20:58.Christelle Daunay, just an metre or two behind Valeria Straneo, the
:20:59. > :21:04.silver medallist from last year. Jessica Augusto from Portugal clear
:21:05. > :21:11.in third place. Still looks quite relaxed, but is not really doing
:21:12. > :21:17.anything to suggest that she could chase the leading pair. Here we are,
:21:18. > :21:24.Valeria Straneo using those arms, marathon runners, your arms do get
:21:25. > :21:26.tired and they are big help on any hill. There is the gap and
:21:27. > :21:36.Christelle Daunay will not want that to grow too much. She can make that
:21:37. > :21:42.up on the downhill. This is brutal distance running. They are being
:21:43. > :21:50.tested by a hell that is difficult. You would not want to climb this, it
:21:51. > :21:59.is too difficult, it is to steep -- hill. They are still climbing.
:22:00. > :22:05.Christelle Daunay, on the last hill, was able to close the gap. Jessica
:22:06. > :22:18.Augusto is working hard at this severe end climb. The crowd roaring
:22:19. > :22:27.her on. She will need that support -- incline. Jessica Augusto is
:22:28. > :22:30.running well. She is not looking at the top of the hill, she is
:22:31. > :22:35.concentrating on keeping the effort going smoothly and strongly and when
:22:36. > :22:40.she gets to the top, she will want enough left in her legs to handle
:22:41. > :22:54.the downhill. That is the price that Elvan Abeylegesse is paying now. You
:22:55. > :23:00.need to relax down the hill rather than make a hard effort. Your legs
:23:01. > :23:05.will pay for that in a road race. If you watch these two, there is more
:23:06. > :23:10.in the left from Christelle Daunay which does not necessarily help the
:23:11. > :23:13.cars Valeria Straneo has a nice little choppy stride. When
:23:14. > :23:21.Christelle Daunay gets onto the flat, that will be other advantage.
:23:22. > :23:25.She is moving much better and I think that is a bit of a pendulum
:23:26. > :23:29.swing towards Christelle Daunay, because Valeria Straneo did not get
:23:30. > :23:35.away ten metres, they came up the hill together and that is to the
:23:36. > :23:38.advantage of Christelle Daunay. I thought that was significant. The
:23:39. > :23:44.pedestrians have come up on the railway to get to the highest point
:23:45. > :23:48.of this course. We are looking at the Institute of Technology in that
:23:49. > :23:52.magnificent old building as we see Lisa Christina Nemec climbing and
:23:53. > :23:58.climbing at making your way to the top of the climb. Elvan Abeylegesse
:23:59. > :24:03.has struggled again and it is not surprising. Four times up a hill
:24:04. > :24:22.like this in the middle of a marathon full-time --. Is she still
:24:23. > :24:26.maintaining her pace? Lisa Christina Nemec has maintained her pace. You
:24:27. > :24:32.can see her checking her time. You can see the effort on her face. At
:24:33. > :24:37.least you can take respite from the fact that once she has crested this
:24:38. > :24:45.hill, it is pretty much all downhill and flat for the rest of the race.
:24:46. > :24:50.Elvan Abeylegesse focusing on the road in front of her and not looking
:24:51. > :24:56.up. You do not want to look up and see how far you have to go, you know
:24:57. > :25:01.having to run this hill, having done it three times already, you know how
:25:02. > :25:05.far it is. She will be happy to get to the high point of this course and
:25:06. > :25:11.know it is only a few kilometres to the finish line. Only a few
:25:12. > :25:16.kilometres to go to the finish line and now the drama beginning to
:25:17. > :25:26.unfold. Christelle Daunay who ran so impressively up that steep incline,
:25:27. > :25:31.Jessica Augusto relaxing down the hell, going past the museum and down
:25:32. > :25:51.towards the lake, she is getting good support. -- hill. You run down
:25:52. > :25:54.the hill with her! I think Christelle Daunay has accepted the
:25:55. > :26:00.fact that this was her bit of the course and because that you two did
:26:01. > :26:06.not pull away, she ran the same way she had run before. She started
:26:07. > :26:12.alongside her, but it is not over yet. Valeria Straneo is very strong.
:26:13. > :26:17.She is 38 years old and on top of her game, but she is struggling to
:26:18. > :26:24.hold onto Christelle Daunay. She so strong. How many times, Brendan is
:26:25. > :26:29.right, you have to be careful about when you make your move and you do
:26:30. > :26:34.not get the chance in the last three or four kilometres, you make one and
:26:35. > :26:39.if it does not work, you will be in trouble. Christelle Daunay is
:26:40. > :26:43.pushing on. She is using the hill, not her final effort, but she is
:26:44. > :26:47.putting the pressure on Valeria Straneo because she knows she has
:26:48. > :26:53.finished the hell better than the Italian every time. She is testing a
:26:54. > :26:59.little -- hill. This is one of her moves and she is seeing how much of
:27:00. > :27:07.a gap she can get and how Valeria Straneo response. I think we will
:27:08. > :27:12.see Christelle Daunay making another big move, probably around three
:27:13. > :27:24.kilometres. Maja Neuenschwander, the first of the swish Astley -- Swiss
:27:25. > :27:29.athletes. It is between Italy and Portugal for the medal in the team
:27:30. > :27:35.position. Russia are strong in the bronze medal position. The top three
:27:36. > :27:44.athletes to cross the line from your team, there are times get added up.
:27:45. > :27:55.The Italian team are looking like they will get the gold medal. Who
:27:56. > :28:01.will win the individual gold? -- there are times. Fionnuala Britton
:28:02. > :28:09.has lost ground, she was behind the Lithuanian athlete. She seems to be
:28:10. > :28:14.dropping away. Fionnuala Britton of Ireland, still in the top ten. But
:28:15. > :28:19.she is struggling. The hills are behind them, it is the Lakeside run
:28:20. > :28:25.for Christelle Daunay and Valeria Straneo from Italy and the race is
:28:26. > :28:29.beginning to gather momentum. Christelle Daunay judged a
:28:30. > :28:35.brilliantly on the hill. Jessica Augusto still has them in her sights
:28:36. > :28:39.and she will have to have up fantastic run to get anything other
:28:40. > :28:44.than the bronze medal. The two athletes upfront are working hard
:28:45. > :28:48.together, the race is on upfront and Jessica Augusto, who has judged this
:28:49. > :28:52.extremely well, she will be happy that the hills are behind and happy
:28:53. > :28:58.that she can concentrate on running out and back and then approached the
:28:59. > :29:06.finish. Two hours and 13 minutes, you can see the waters sprays, which
:29:07. > :29:14.have not been necessary today, but a good addition to any course, as we
:29:15. > :29:17.look at the Croatian athlete, still working hard, Lisa Christina Nemec.
:29:18. > :29:22.The crowds are coming out to give these athletes the support they
:29:23. > :29:26.deserve. We have seen a dramatic race so far, but we will see a
:29:27. > :29:30.dramatic finish and it is time to concentrate on the leading group to
:29:31. > :29:35.see what will happen. Things will change, I am sure we will see a
:29:36. > :29:42.fantastic race for the gold medal in what has been a superb race overall.
:29:43. > :29:47.You can see that Lisa Christina Nemec is hurting, but that is normal
:29:48. > :29:51.at this stage. I am wondering about Jessica Augusto, she has paced
:29:52. > :29:55.herself well, but I am wondering how she paid the price for not going
:29:56. > :30:01.with the lead group in the beginning? How much energy did she
:30:02. > :30:06.save? The gap has maintained pretty much the same. If she had gone off
:30:07. > :30:26.with the leaders, she might still be in contention for the lead now. Is I
:30:27. > :30:30.think this is a push from Daunay. I think you are right there, I don't
:30:31. > :30:34.know why she didn't get involved early on, she was ten seconds off
:30:35. > :30:38.the early group and you think you will make it up and they have moved
:30:39. > :30:42.steadily and she has moved that pretty much the same pace as the
:30:43. > :30:47.leaders all the way through but when you are not in contact in the last
:30:48. > :30:51.few kilometres, it is hard to make it up and raise these last few
:30:52. > :30:55.kilometres 15 seconds behind. This is a real effort to win the race
:30:56. > :31:00.thereby Daunay. You can see the way she has been picking her legs up and
:31:01. > :31:09.it looks to me as though Straneo is settling for second. Look how
:31:10. > :31:12.aggressive Daunay is running. If you were in second place here and you
:31:13. > :31:19.are feeling good, you wouldn't allow this gap to open up, so Daunay, who
:31:20. > :31:24.has gauged it brilliantly so far, making a real effort to become the
:31:25. > :31:29.first French woman ever to win the European marathon championship, it
:31:30. > :31:33.has only ever been won by Portugal, Italy and Germany. Portugal have
:31:34. > :31:39.that fantastic record in this event. Italy have won it twice, Incerti who
:31:40. > :31:47.is in the race today, Aguilar a few years ago, and this lady, Jenna Val
:31:48. > :31:51.gusto, following a famous tradition -- Jennifer Augusto, following a
:31:52. > :31:57.famous traditional Portuguese marathon racers. It started in 1982.
:31:58. > :32:02.She came with the intended to try and win it. Maybe she just did a
:32:03. > :32:08.little wrong in the early stages, but if she had anything left, she
:32:09. > :32:17.would be running faster. She would, this is a stronger thereby Daunay to
:32:18. > :32:28.go ahead, I wonder if a course record is under threat here as well.
:32:29. > :32:32.If she is on course of her back or delete -- for her personal best, she
:32:33. > :32:40.is on course to beat that. So another victory, possibly, for
:32:41. > :32:46.France in the endurance events. Let's not hang the gold medal around
:32:47. > :32:52.her neck yet, the gap is not getting bigger. That was a slower five
:32:53. > :32:59.kilometres, but not by much. It just shows they did slow a little. But
:33:00. > :33:03.all of a sudden, that pace is back on again, and it really is a big
:33:04. > :33:09.push, and I think all Augusto can do now is hang on to third spot. I
:33:10. > :33:16.think the her chances of her coming in the top two are disappearing all
:33:17. > :33:21.the time, because Straneo and Daunay are running so strongly. For
:33:22. > :33:28.Augusto, the gap is too big and the athletes ahead of her are too good.
:33:29. > :33:37.34 seconds and growing is a gap she is not going to make up, she is safe
:33:38. > :33:41.in third from Nemec, who is around 1:47 back, but certainly we are
:33:42. > :33:48.looking at Battle for gold and silver being wide open but bronze is
:33:49. > :33:53.pretty much wrapped up. That gap is growing, still, I think. We are
:33:54. > :33:58.seeing Daunay moving away now. She is going to come past the drink
:33:59. > :34:02.station and get some more information, because there isn't
:34:03. > :34:06.another switchback point from here to the finish, so they will not be
:34:07. > :34:10.any information other than what she can hear from the footsteps and the
:34:11. > :34:16.breathing, which she won't now be able to hear from Straneo. She will
:34:17. > :34:24.get the information from her team official. Last drink, two hours, 19
:34:25. > :34:31.minutes and 19 seconds. She goes through the water station, well on
:34:32. > :34:35.her way to a gold medal. Have the medals now been resolved? Is the
:34:36. > :34:41.gold medal going to France and the silver medal to Italy. As Straneo
:34:42. > :34:46.got anything left? Can she make one last effort? Tired legs, the hill
:34:47. > :34:51.has really taken its toll in the women's marathon as they follow the
:34:52. > :34:55.purple line that leads back to that welcome finish area. The third-place
:34:56. > :34:58.position for Jennifer Augusto looks to be comfortable but is anything
:34:59. > :35:06.going to change in this last kilometre and a half? I think she
:35:07. > :35:11.used those couple of turns very well. When she was heading along
:35:12. > :35:17.those roads to make the turn into the park, she had no more than an
:35:18. > :35:22.eight or nine or ten-metre lead, and now it has doubled in size. It has
:35:23. > :35:31.given her a question, meaning that Straneo is a good 30 or 40 metres
:35:32. > :35:36.behind. -- given her a cushion. If you keep it to ten or 15, you think
:35:37. > :35:41.you can raise something at the end, but Daunay is strong, running well.
:35:42. > :35:46.Straneo is holding it together in second place but is watching the
:35:47. > :35:50.gold medal disappear. And that helicopter shot alongside the
:35:51. > :35:57.waterfront giving us a perfect view of the gap. And Augusto, I think,
:35:58. > :36:04.has settled for third place. She is in no danger of being caught from
:36:05. > :36:12.behind, Nemec is a good two minutes behind the Portuguese athlete.
:36:13. > :36:17.Augusto can see Straneo, as we look down on Daunay, who is still
:36:18. > :36:24.working, knowing she has got to try and open this gap a little further.
:36:25. > :36:28.Following the bike camera, she has accompaniment there, which is good
:36:29. > :36:32.news, but there she goes heading towards the bridge, you can see it
:36:33. > :36:38.in the distance. Not too much further to go. And Daunay, the
:36:39. > :36:45.French record-holder, on her way to a superb victory on a very demanding
:36:46. > :36:51.course, on a decent day for distance running. Good conditions all day,
:36:52. > :36:55.the course has not matched up to the conditions. As Straneo given up on
:36:56. > :37:00.this and is Daunay just going to enjoy this? The French record-holder
:37:01. > :37:07.from every distance up to the 10,000m. You can see in the
:37:08. > :37:10.distance, the area where the bridge crosses the lake as we watched
:37:11. > :37:17.Jennifer Augusto, still running strongly. She is still running
:37:18. > :37:21.strongly, but she is certain of the bronze medal, silver is going to
:37:22. > :37:28.Straneo, that last shot showed them inside the last kilometre. You can
:37:29. > :37:34.see a difference in the cadence, the arm movement and the energy from the
:37:35. > :37:38.athletes. Christelle Daunay has that extra energy knowing she is in the
:37:39. > :37:41.last kilometre and she can latch onto the lead vehicle and the
:37:42. > :37:46.motorcyclist alongside her, which will help her in continuing the
:37:47. > :37:52.momentum into the finish on tired legs. But in her mind now, she must
:37:53. > :37:57.know that she has this victory and she needs to just maintain it and
:37:58. > :38:04.keep going. Straneo is now running for silver. Just a few hundred
:38:05. > :38:08.metres left now for the leader in this marathon. She will get to
:38:09. > :38:13.Bellevue and take a left turn and will be able to see the finish line.
:38:14. > :38:22.Jennifer Augusto is safe in third placed, no chance of catching
:38:23. > :38:27.Straneo -- third-place. This has blew a hard-fought win for her, a
:38:28. > :38:33.tough course but she has stood up to it very well -- this has been a
:38:34. > :38:39.hard-fought win. She has stood up to it exceptionally well. One last
:38:40. > :38:42.lap, she decided to stay as close as she possibly could, running her
:38:43. > :38:48.ninth marathon and it looks like on her way to her first-ever victory.
:38:49. > :38:52.What a place to do it and she is getting a great response. They have
:38:53. > :39:01.come out to watch Christelle Daunay add another gold-medal for France.
:39:02. > :39:10.One more word, Pawlak, before we see her come to the finish I -- Paulo. ,
:39:11. > :39:17.who, careful, never look behind. It is a sign of weakness and you may
:39:18. > :39:22.stumble, never look behind. I was wondering, will we see this
:39:23. > :39:27.similarity yesterday, grabbing the flag and crossing the line, but I
:39:28. > :39:33.don't think she will do that, she will cross the line and then get it
:39:34. > :39:38.wrapped up. She will press the hill. One last look behind, she can see
:39:39. > :39:42.the finish line ahead of her. Huge crowds welcoming in the winner of
:39:43. > :39:48.the women's marathon in these European Championships. It has been
:39:49. > :39:54.a tough, tough day. She does grab one of the French flags. Like Jo
:39:55. > :40:01.Pavey, she will be turning 40 later this year, another one who has
:40:02. > :40:05.performed so well over the years. As Brendan said, French records at all
:40:06. > :40:10.the distances up to the marathon. It is outside her personal best but it
:40:11. > :40:12.will be a new championship record for the marathon for Christelle
:40:13. > :40:18.Daunay of France, who has been totally dominant. Daunay wins the
:40:19. > :40:24.gold for France, great performance from her. A new championship best
:40:25. > :40:27.performance. The silver medal game will go to Straneo, silver at the
:40:28. > :40:34.World Championships, silver at the European Championships,
:40:35. > :40:37.congratulations to Straneo. And a delighted Jessica Augusto, who may
:40:38. > :40:41.be missed the split right at the beginning but stuck to her task well
:40:42. > :40:49.and is rewarded with the bronze medal. Congratulations from Daunay.
:40:50. > :40:52.These three know each other very, very well, particularly from
:40:53. > :41:03.cross-country and from road racing as well. And Christelle Daunay must
:41:04. > :41:07.be the happiest woman down there in Zurich. She has had a long, long
:41:08. > :41:12.career and finally finds herself with a gold medal at major
:41:13. > :41:16.championships. As I said, championship record. Really well
:41:17. > :41:17.done, a tough, tough course and she coped with it exceptionally well. A
:41:18. > :41:26.great race. A great performance by Christelle
:41:27. > :41:30.Daunay and by my reckoning, that puts the French above Great Britain
:41:31. > :41:36.in the medal table, the same number of gold medals, but 15 in total, as
:41:37. > :41:42.opposed to 13 for Great Britain. It will be a battle to see who finishes
:41:43. > :41:45.top of the medal table by the end of tomorrow, but brilliant performance
:41:46. > :41:49.from Christelle Daunay. We will have more analysis shortly, but you
:41:50. > :41:53.cannot fail to have noticed that the Premier League season starts today
:41:54. > :41:57.with coverage across the BBC, including much of the day, which
:41:58. > :42:06.just happens to be 50 years old this year -- match the day. -- Match of
:42:07. > :42:18.the Day. THEY HUM THE THEME TUNE.
:42:19. > :42:26.When you hear that theme straight away, it is Match of the Day. You
:42:27. > :42:32.drop it instantly and watch the TV. It is football, it is people, it is
:42:33. > :42:40.Match of the Day. Lots are bad for the next nine months for sure, but
:42:41. > :42:45.that is not all on BBC Sport -- lots of that.
:42:46. > :42:56.That is perfection. Such magical moments. The brothers are showing
:42:57. > :43:10.the way once again. A wonderful performance. Geraint Thomas, what a
:43:11. > :43:14.superb victory. Yes, lots to look forward to and Paula has made the
:43:15. > :43:18.dash from the commentary box to hear in the studio and I have to say, the
:43:19. > :43:21.French are next to us just over here and they have a mixed studio with
:43:22. > :43:28.the presenter and commentary all in one, do you fancy that? It would be
:43:29. > :43:32.easier, but it is not hard, it is only ten steps across the platform.
:43:33. > :43:41.Are you surprised at the championship record when, given that
:43:42. > :43:45.it was such a challenging course? I think so, but it was the race that
:43:46. > :43:48.produced that, the fact that Straneo and Daunay were working so well
:43:49. > :43:51.together, each trying to win it, but at the same time, maintaining a good
:43:52. > :43:54.effort, and that is where Augusto was caught out, because she felt
:43:55. > :44:00.with the nature of the cause, the athletes would come back to her and
:44:01. > :44:04.they didn't -- of the course. So the gap from the beginning was
:44:05. > :44:09.maintained. Wilbur marathon purists have liked that course, given the
:44:10. > :44:17.ups and downs, or would they prefer more of a time trial, flat course?
:44:18. > :44:21.What is the purest's view? It is more where do your strengths lie and
:44:22. > :44:27.are you a good uphill or downhill runner? In general, marathon runners
:44:28. > :44:30.like a testing course pro championship if you are not too
:44:31. > :44:34.concerned about times. I didn't think Daunay would grab our flag
:44:35. > :44:38.because she was going to the championship record, you would want
:44:39. > :44:42.to keep running hard through to the end but she wasn't too bothered, she
:44:43. > :44:48.was more interested in the victory and celebrating the victory, so I
:44:49. > :44:50.think they do want a course that is testing. The French like a
:44:51. > :45:00.celebration before the finishing line. We saw it yesterday, virtually
:45:01. > :45:03.stopping to get a flag. He did, the Portuguese flag, in dedication to
:45:04. > :45:07.his grandmother who had passed away this year. And did you see the size
:45:08. > :45:11.of the Portuguese flag that Augusto had wrapped around her? It is
:45:12. > :45:20.becoming more and more now, grabbing the flag to celebrate a little more
:45:21. > :45:25.before the line. Pace judgement was important, not pushing too hard up
:45:26. > :45:31.the hill and recovering downhill and that is a different skill. Yes, the
:45:32. > :45:36.fact that it is a looped course is in the favour of the athletes and
:45:37. > :45:41.gives them a chance to feel out the hills. Certainly, I think here,
:45:42. > :45:50.whether you know how to run the downhill well as well as the uphill
:45:51. > :45:59.well is a huge factor. You need to relax downhill. Steve Cram has
:46:00. > :46:08.joined us. It is cold here. Were you a fan that course? Yes and no. I
:46:09. > :46:14.remember in Athens, remember that big hill in the triathlon bike route
:46:15. > :46:19.and everyone said it would make it interesting? It's boiled the event,
:46:20. > :46:26.it was brutal. You have to be careful about putting something in
:46:27. > :46:32.which will be a test, but which is not so difficult people cannot cope
:46:33. > :46:36.-- it spoiled the event. I think they were good athletes. They were
:46:37. > :46:41.the people you would have expected to have contended, Christelle Daunay
:46:42. > :46:51.was one of the best. It was tough for Fionnuala Britton. It was not a
:46:52. > :46:55.bad start, though. No, she was coming in of a very short build-up.
:46:56. > :47:01.It was only decided in the last month that she was going to make her
:47:02. > :47:10.debut here. You have been talking through the event, as was Brendan.
:47:11. > :47:21.He joins us now. Are you OK on your own? Yes. I brought you some
:47:22. > :47:26.chocolate biscuits. They were only second-class after the chocolate
:47:27. > :47:32.yesterday! It was a great race. Yes and the chorus made a difference. It
:47:33. > :47:36.was very competitive, the time was extremely good -- course. I was
:47:37. > :47:41.delighted to see the crowd supporting the athletes. The weather
:47:42. > :47:46.was great, but the course was brutal. You could have had an easier
:47:47. > :47:52.course, but the athletes ran well. In terms of the race tomorrow, the
:47:53. > :47:57.men tomorrow, this is a course designed for a Swiss victory. They
:47:58. > :48:03.can design the course for that, but they have to be good enough on the
:48:04. > :48:07.day. Victor has been a great athlete, he has been a real hero in
:48:08. > :48:12.this country and in these championships, they are celebrating
:48:13. > :48:16.the championships as they did last night and today, we saw the Olympic
:48:17. > :48:24.triathlon champion, Nicola Spirig run a great race and effect could
:48:25. > :48:29.win tomorrow, it would be fantastic. Thank you -- if he could win
:48:30. > :48:35.tomorrow. What are your verdicts? Open. It is open. You can design the
:48:36. > :48:40.course to play to the strength of someone, but they still need to run
:48:41. > :48:46.strongly. He will get a lot of support, but the course will suit
:48:47. > :48:54.him, but we will find out what shape everyone is in. No British men in
:48:55. > :49:00.it. That is a shame. That is from 8:45am tomorrow. The race will start
:49:01. > :49:12.at nine o'clock. We are looking forward to this evening, Jo Pavey
:49:13. > :49:16.will go in the 5000 metres. Jo Pavey for Great Britain. She senses that
:49:17. > :49:22.the races starting to move. They approach 1000 metres. Jo Pavey is in
:49:23. > :49:29.third place. And magnificent position, a magnificent move. Jo
:49:30. > :49:34.Pavey, 240 metres to go. Everyone wants to hear your story, use a
:49:35. > :49:41.prize? I am absolutely shocked by the interest, I did not expect that.
:49:42. > :49:47.It has taken me by surprise. Why do you think there is so much interest?
:49:48. > :49:51.When I was a young athlete going to training camps, people could not
:49:52. > :49:56.relate to that, but perhaps now that I am 40 and a busy mother, people
:49:57. > :50:02.can relate more to their lives. I have had kind words and I feel so
:50:03. > :50:07.happy and fortunate to have a supportive husband and two lovely
:50:08. > :50:13.little children. I can now enjoy my running and keeping busy all day
:50:14. > :50:19.rather than sitting around has given me more injuries. Jo Pavey, 40 years
:50:20. > :50:26.of age, no one has ever won a gold medal at that age... There is a wide
:50:27. > :50:31.range of ages and experience, what do the younger athletes think of
:50:32. > :50:37.you? I have been fortunate. To still be on the team with them and be
:50:38. > :50:42.there with them, we are all inspiring each other and encouraging
:50:43. > :50:47.each other and it is a great team spirit. It is fun to still be part
:50:48. > :50:56.of that. Way she goes, this is it, her whole career has about this
:50:57. > :51:00.moment! She is the champion. It is almost by being less selfish that
:51:01. > :51:05.you become more successful. Yes, I wish I had realised that that I
:51:06. > :51:10.would be better being busy, rather than sitting trying to recover. When
:51:11. > :51:13.you get to a championships and you suddenly rests a little bit more,
:51:14. > :51:18.you really benefit from that, because you have not been doing that
:51:19. > :51:24.and that brings something more to your performance. Jo Pavey has
:51:25. > :51:28.finally come of age at the age of 40. I remember hearing Paul at say
:51:29. > :51:35.when she was feeling the pain in the marathon, she would say a mantra --
:51:36. > :51:40.Paula, do you do that with the names of your children? I know how she
:51:41. > :51:44.feels. When I am racing, I think of the commitments we have had to put
:51:45. > :51:48.into it as a family and I am thinking I have to make it worth it
:51:49. > :51:52.and back gives me more determination. Jessica Ennis-Hill
:51:53. > :52:01.has been watching, what would you say to her? She is a new mother,
:52:02. > :52:05.thinking how she will do this. I was down on the track running the most
:52:06. > :52:10.horrendously slow times, it seemed that there was no point, but I just
:52:11. > :52:16.kept plugging away, I did not get stressed, I just kept trying until
:52:17. > :52:21.eventually I did. She will be fine, she is so talented and organised and
:52:22. > :52:25.experience, and I wish her luck. Was there ever any doubt that you would
:52:26. > :52:33.be able to do the ten and then the five? I would not take place in the
:52:34. > :52:36.team if I did not intend to do it. I am privileged to do that. I will
:52:37. > :52:47.recover as best I can. I will eat lots of food and see if I can get
:52:48. > :52:53.ready. Lovely interview and a story that has resonated with the British
:52:54. > :52:57.public. I think so. Jo Pavey comes across as a very nice person and
:52:58. > :53:00.someone who has persevered and will always put the work again. Whatever
:53:01. > :53:06.happens tonight, you will come away and know that she has prepared as
:53:07. > :53:15.well as she possibly could. It will be a tough race, coming back from
:53:16. > :53:24.tonight. -- last night. Realistically, that recovery is
:53:25. > :53:28.needed. She does not have a lot of experience, but she is so good and
:53:29. > :53:31.she has planned this from early in the season and she was fortunate
:53:32. > :53:38.that there were no heats, because she could not have done it. She is
:53:39. > :53:43.fast, she was very fast, and I do not think anyone will be able to run
:53:44. > :53:56.away from her. If she has recovered, she will be tough. Jo Pavey in their
:53:57. > :54:04.5000 metres finals. -- in the 5000 metres finals. The roar of Hampden
:54:05. > :54:13.Park. Amy is well clear in second place. Any child from Scotland takes
:54:14. > :54:30.the silver. After Glasgow it was busy -- Amy Child. It was nice to be
:54:31. > :54:32.away from everything. I wanted to focus on the European Championships.
:54:33. > :54:41.I do not think it would have been a problem, I'll be had two rounds in
:54:42. > :54:46.the Commonwealth Games. -- I only had two rounds. It was nice to
:54:47. > :54:51.refocus. I am looking forward to the European Championships. I have not
:54:52. > :54:55.done that much for the last couple of weeks apart from competing, but I
:54:56. > :55:02.will be fresh and I have a competitive edge. Anything
:55:03. > :55:10.physically, it should not be a problem. It is about keeping focused
:55:11. > :55:15.and hopefully I can win something. I think the good thing from Glasgow in
:55:16. > :55:19.terms of pressure and expectation, it will probably not get that big
:55:20. > :55:24.for me again. Being a home athlete, everyone wanted me to win
:55:25. > :55:29.something. The nice thing about the European Championships, I am number
:55:30. > :55:33.one, but I do not have that things of expectation and pressure and the
:55:34. > :55:36.fact they dealt with it in Glasgow means I come here knowing I have
:55:37. > :55:41.dealt with this before and can do it again. There are some any of us
:55:42. > :55:46.quite close together, so although I am number one, I cannot be
:55:47. > :55:50.complacent. It is close, it will be a case of getting through the first
:55:51. > :55:56.couple of rounds and seeing where everyone is and seeing their form,
:55:57. > :56:00.it is different this year because the British athletes we have had,
:56:01. > :56:09.they have been really good. It is about who has done what and who is
:56:10. > :56:13.still on form. A cool, calm and relaxed any child. She was the
:56:14. > :56:21.poster girl for Scotland, but this was always going to be her big
:56:22. > :56:32.chance of a gold -- Amy Child. Against Spencer at Hampden Park, it
:56:33. > :56:39.was tough. She faces some tough competition. If Amy Child runs her
:56:40. > :56:43.race and runs as well as she did at Hampden, I think she will win the
:56:44. > :56:48.gold medal. It could be a great night for Great Britain and
:56:49. > :56:52.Scotland. The only question mark is that she is the favourite and the
:56:53. > :56:55.number one and how do you deal with bad? She has shown that she is
:56:56. > :57:06.dealing with it well, she is getting better with each round, she is not
:57:07. > :57:10.thinking too much ahead of herself, you'd want to concentrate on running
:57:11. > :57:14.your best race, especially in something like the hurdle event and
:57:15. > :57:18.making sure your clean throughout and that you run strongly and she
:57:19. > :57:25.has been doing that. I think she will be OK. You mentioned medals for
:57:26. > :57:30.Scotland, the women's 800 metres. A huge chance for Lindsay Sharp. She
:57:31. > :57:35.was a medal contender, but she has been so dominant for me, really come
:57:36. > :57:41.on as an athlete. She is not frightened to take on the race. She
:57:42. > :57:44.used to sit and wait, but she has so much confidence and I do not see too
:57:45. > :57:53.much in there, the Russian was not very good. I think Lindsay has too
:57:54. > :57:59.much for them. It could be a great night for Britain and Scotland. A
:58:00. > :58:06.quick word on the relays, all the teams are out for qualification and
:58:07. > :58:15.hope for the medals. They need to run fast! We are back at two o'clock
:58:16. > :58:21.this afternoon on BBC1 for this afternoon's sessions. Tomorrow
:58:22. > :58:27.morning we are here at 8:45am and the final with Jo Pavey is at
:58:28. > :58:34.4:30pm, so make sure you join us then. Jo Pavey will go for a gold
:58:35. > :58:46.medal game and then Amy Child and Lindsay Sharp will go for medals.
:58:47. > :59:13.Jo Pavey! Amy Child looking good so far.
:59:14. > :59:16.MUSIC: "Black Skinhead" by Kanye West
