:00:13. > :00:18.Welcome to Gothenburg in Sweden, a city with a sporting past to be

:00:19. > :00:28.proud of. In 1950 it was host for the Football World Cup and 40 euros

:00:29. > :00:29.

:00:29. > :00:34.in 1992. John Curry and Robin Cousins have won gold medals here.

:00:34. > :00:37.The story continues this weekend, the 32nd European Athletics Indoor

:00:38. > :00:47.Championships. An event which has always been a happy hunting ground

:00:48. > :01:14.

:01:14. > :01:24.Gothenburg looking resplendent in the sunshine. We are ready for the

:01:24. > :01:26.

:01:26. > :01:34.next chapter in the European Athletics Indoor Championships. A

:01:34. > :01:43.reputation for hosting major European events. The Scandinavian

:01:43. > :01:50.arena is where we off. -- Scandinavium Arena. This hosted the

:01:50. > :02:00.eurovision song contest back in 1985.

:02:00. > :02:33.

:02:33. > :02:43.This is what is coming up this Some of the highlights of this

:02:43. > :02:57.

:02:57. > :03:02.Good morning to Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson alongside me. First

:03:02. > :03:12.of all, a busy morning, the first championships since the Olympic

:03:12. > :03:17.Games, and a new man in charge, Peter Eriksson takes up the baton.

:03:17. > :03:23.Here you are, head coach, in your home country of Sweden, your first

:03:23. > :03:29.major championships in this role. It is great. I haven't been home

:03:29. > :03:34.for many years, it is great to be the first championships, this is

:03:34. > :03:39.what you are waiting for. The bigger event. We have a great team

:03:39. > :03:42.to do well. When you come back to Sweden, to

:03:42. > :03:48.memories of that time come flooding back?

:03:49. > :03:52.Not really. It is more, when I come home, this is always home to me, is

:03:52. > :03:57.that you see the city, you recognise anything, anything looks

:03:57. > :04:03.the same but nothing is really the same. I have changed, everything

:04:03. > :04:09.else has changed, in the 27 years I have gone. It is tough, you feel

:04:09. > :04:13.like a stranger in your own town. I must bring you to the present day

:04:13. > :04:19.and this weekend in Gothenburg. You talk about the team, having high

:04:19. > :04:26.hopes. You have gone for a team which has people in there with top

:04:26. > :04:30.six potential across the board. That is what UK sport and lottery

:04:30. > :04:38.funding is investing in, in performance, when it comes to major

:04:38. > :04:45.events. As you can see, we have a very young team. And, it is a good

:04:45. > :04:51.team. A good coaching and support staff, I am really positive. Will

:04:51. > :04:56.you set medal targets corrupt? All will it be something you will be

:04:56. > :05:05.looking at and, in terms of the overall picture? This is a new

:05:05. > :05:15.coaching staff. Are we doing better than before? Did everybody perform

:05:15. > :05:16.

:05:16. > :05:20.at their best? This is important to start the year. Just do better.

:05:20. > :05:28.Better than Paris two years ago, eight medals? To do better than

:05:28. > :05:32.that. In this air of optimism, after the Olympics? We have a young

:05:32. > :05:37.team, we have to be optimistic, it is a lot of pressure on the team

:05:37. > :05:47.with so many youngsters. I do not see that is a stumbling stone for

:05:47. > :05:47.

:05:47. > :05:52.doing well. You can hope for medals. But, I just want the best from them.

:05:52. > :05:56.That is how we are going to evaluate it on. You have had a

:05:56. > :06:03.fantastic success with the Great Britain Paralympics team, London

:06:03. > :06:08.2012. A quote here, he is our friend as well as our coach, but he

:06:08. > :06:16.knows when to be scary as well, at a winning formula! I do not know

:06:16. > :06:22.what to say about that! Scary. I can tough -- be tough when I need

:06:22. > :06:31.to be tough. I have to be. Otherwise... You would be

:06:31. > :06:36.steamrollered all of the time. Really nice for Peter Eriksson

:06:36. > :06:41.coming back to his home country for his first championships as UK head

:06:41. > :06:47.coach. What a different personality he is

:06:47. > :06:53.from Charles. A isn't he just. Mild mannered in nature, very warm,

:06:53. > :06:59.very generous, on the occasions I have spoken to him. He has to

:06:59. > :07:04.establish himself, a new change of management, new team. He has to

:07:04. > :07:09.stamp his authority for the success of the team.

:07:09. > :07:14.It will certainly be a different approach for the athlete to get

:07:14. > :07:19.used to. Charles was uncompromising, not afraid of calling a spade a

:07:19. > :07:25.spade or even worse. Peter, a different approach.

:07:25. > :07:32.He has a more lovely approach which some of the athletes will find

:07:32. > :07:36.strange. He is breaking down the barriers of a them and us scenario.

:07:36. > :07:40.He wants a genuine feeling of being a team to help athletes perform to

:07:40. > :07:43.the best of their ability. So Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe

:07:43. > :07:47.are in the commentary box, good morning.

:07:47. > :07:52.We are loving it up here. A good vantage point.

:07:52. > :07:57.We were talking about that change in culture. It will be very

:07:57. > :08:02.different with Peter. A very different character.

:08:02. > :08:07.Obviously, it's not just the athletes. We talk about the

:08:07. > :08:12.athletes a lot. Peter has to work with the coaches, there has been a

:08:12. > :08:17.lot of turmoil, people put into new positions, people have lost

:08:17. > :08:23.positions. So, Peter has a job to keep everybody feeling part of the

:08:23. > :08:31.team still, feeling as if they are contributing. Often, where

:08:31. > :08:38.communication stops. You have to include the coaches as well.

:08:38. > :08:46.It is the way you motivate athletes as well. Charles would show people

:08:46. > :08:50.what they needed to do, being forthright. Peter it is going for

:08:50. > :08:54.that father figure. That approach, where the athlete can prove

:08:54. > :08:58.themselves. The interesting thing is, no murder

:08:58. > :09:04.of targets. He talks about getting the best from the athletes which

:09:04. > :09:08.already seems to be a contrast to Charles. He set the number of

:09:08. > :09:14.medals. I think the problem with that, as

:09:14. > :09:18.we all know, sports are judged by their output. They receive lottery

:09:18. > :09:24.funding to win medals. You cannot keep saying, we will do as well as

:09:24. > :09:29.we can. They will at some point tell UK Sport what they are aiming

:09:29. > :09:35.for. Not just here, but in World Championships and Olympic Games.

:09:35. > :09:40.The individual athletes will know what their targets are. We hope the

:09:40. > :09:44.team wins lots of medals. But it is really down to the individual. What

:09:44. > :09:49.they have to engender is British athletes can win medals at the

:09:49. > :09:53.Olympic Games, World Championships, particularly here. It is a small

:09:53. > :09:57.team. They have said from the outset, it is about getting into

:09:58. > :10:01.the top six and winning medals. This British team going forward

:10:01. > :10:05.from the Olympics has to be one which is led from the top who is

:10:05. > :10:10.saying, we expect you to do well and when medals.

:10:10. > :10:20.Peter Eriksson talked about the team, average age of 22 years old.

:10:20. > :10:23.

:10:23. > :10:28.Let us have a look at it and see It is a good, strong team, even

:10:28. > :10:35.though it is small, there is a lot of potential. Looking at the 400m,

:10:35. > :10:41.we could easily get two medals. 800 metres as well. The relay, a gold

:10:41. > :10:46.medal. Robbie Grabarz can go higher, he could possibly win it. It is a

:10:46. > :10:51.good, solid team. If you want medals, this is the type of team

:10:51. > :10:57.you have to pick, I think. Paula Radcliffe, there is a big gap

:10:57. > :11:01.between the 800 metres and 4x400 metres worthy 1,500m might have

:11:01. > :11:05.been. You have been vociferous about who should or should not have

:11:05. > :11:10.been selected. Coming into these championships, it

:11:10. > :11:15.is very much a stepping-stone to the World Championships. It is all

:11:15. > :11:21.very well to pick people horrid top eight possibility. There are young

:11:21. > :11:25.athlete who could have come here and used it as a stepping stone. In

:11:25. > :11:29.middle distance, they could have been in there. That expense could

:11:29. > :11:34.have been invaluable. A I would like to chip in a little

:11:34. > :11:42.bit. It is about winning medals here. Any programme is about

:11:42. > :11:47.development going forward. A medallist going forward. You have

:11:47. > :11:54.to learned this game, come to major jab bishops in the senior ranks.

:11:54. > :12:04.Not everyone can come here and win medals. You can wind the back --

:12:04. > :12:05.

:12:05. > :12:14.the clock back to 1994, when we saw youngsters winning medals.

:12:14. > :12:20.Event Andrew Osagie, two years ago, was lucky to be selected. Taking a

:12:20. > :12:26.chance on these kinds of people. Denise Lewis, you are nodding

:12:26. > :12:33.vigorously. What do you make about this new talent?

:12:33. > :12:38.As you say, this is a stepping stone for a lot of the athletes.

:12:38. > :12:42.You have to use it. It would be nice to know that British Athletics

:12:42. > :12:47.had set their stall out from the beginning of the year to say, we

:12:47. > :12:53.need to rebuild after 2012, the pressure was on us as a team, we

:12:53. > :12:58.have delivered really well. Now, it is about the next generation, the

:12:59. > :13:05.rising stars, the build up to Rio, and it starts with competitions

:13:05. > :13:09.like this. We would like to see athletes. More athletes here, that

:13:09. > :13:14.was my first impression. If let us take a look at the

:13:14. > :13:20.women's team now. Denise Lewis, your reaction to these elections?

:13:20. > :13:27.For again, a very strong women's team, I think. Looking at the

:13:27. > :13:31.women's 400m, maybe two Murdoch chances. Holly Bleasdale and Shara

:13:31. > :13:36.Proctor, they really should be fighting for those hurdles.

:13:36. > :13:42.Generally, a very solid team. Nice to see Jenny Meadows taking the

:13:43. > :13:52.opportunity to race. The 4x400m relay, if we don't get a medal, I

:13:52. > :13:55.will be very surprised. That is a very strong team,

:13:55. > :13:58.especially with Perri Shakes- Drayton of running so strongly, and

:13:58. > :14:03.Christine Ohuruogu. That is a formidable quartet.

:14:03. > :14:07.We know the Russians will be strong but outing should be aiming for his

:14:07. > :14:12.gold medal. I am keen to take a look at how

:14:12. > :14:21.Britain has done in the past decade in these championships, to give a

:14:21. > :14:31.context for the indoor chances for the team. Immediately post Olympic

:14:31. > :14:39.Games. Four medals, 2009. Should we bring

:14:39. > :14:42.our expectations of lower? This team is hungry. They have the

:14:42. > :14:47.ability of winning medals, they will deliver what we expect of them.

:14:47. > :14:52.Just because they are not vocalising how many medals they are

:14:52. > :15:02.expecting, they will be disappointed if the team do not

:15:02. > :15:11.

:15:11. > :15:15.come home with seven medals. It is team has been very different.

:15:15. > :15:19.They've been encouraged to expect more from themselves in terms of

:15:19. > :15:23.performance. Definitely on the European stage. I'd expect them to

:15:23. > :15:31.do really well. Peter Eriksson talked about doing at least as well

:15:31. > :15:41.as Paris. What we've asked is the expert pundit to give their

:15:41. > :15:43.

:15:43. > :15:50.predictions. We will see what they was feeling optimistic! I think we

:15:50. > :15:58.should be looking for medals from Holly, Perri Shakes-Drayton, the

:15:58. > :16:02.two 4 x4 relays. Let's think Helen Clitheroe a couple of years ago,

:16:02. > :16:12.how she shocked everyone in that 3000m. There's got to be another

:16:12. > :16:18.

:16:18. > :16:22.Are you regretting that now? No, I think honestly I've gone a little

:16:22. > :16:27.bit with what I'd like to see happen as well. I've gone for Jenny

:16:27. > :16:32.in the 800m because I'd love to see her return and winning medal, after

:16:32. > :16:38.the year she went through last year. In the men's 800m, I definitely

:16:38. > :16:45.think a medal is possible there. I think the women's 400m, too, and

:16:45. > :16:53.then gold shots in both relays. They've been doing this TV thing

:16:54. > :16:57.for a long time, Steve Cram and CJ, they've gone conservative. Because

:16:57. > :17:02.we've been doing this for a long time, we are not stupid enough to

:17:02. > :17:05.stick our necks out and be shown up at the end of the weekend. That's

:17:05. > :17:12.pretty much what it is. Denise has gone out there really positive,

:17:12. > :17:17.Paul is new to the game. We are wise old men. Predictions, it we

:17:17. > :17:20.were that clever we'd all be down the bookies, I'd be predicting

:17:20. > :17:25.sporting outcomes for the whole of this weekend and elsewhere as well.

:17:26. > :17:32.It's a bit of fun. It's a bit of a stab at what we hope might happen.

:17:32. > :17:34.What we made the expect to happen. It does reflect. It will be a good

:17:34. > :17:38.Championships for Great Britain. Not because we have a brilliant

:17:38. > :17:44.team, it's a good team, but this is post-Olympic year. There are a lot

:17:44. > :17:48.of other nations like Great Britain who haven't sent their big stars.

:17:48. > :17:53.There will be some new names coming through, that will be great to see

:17:54. > :17:57.them develop over the next few years. We are going to be sitting

:17:57. > :18:00.quite well here. You get measured on the table by gold medals. It

:18:00. > :18:03.Denise is right, we'll probably be top of the table. Two or three gold

:18:03. > :18:07.medals would be a good result. will keep track of those

:18:07. > :18:15.predictions during the course of the weekend and see who was right

:18:15. > :18:21.We can hear from Jenny Meadows now. It's great to have her back on the

:18:21. > :18:27.team after an injury ravaged 2012. It's great to see you because when

:18:28. > :18:31.we spoke in Birmingham, you ran well, you said you had to talk to

:18:31. > :18:36.your coat, but whether you would compete - what was the discussion

:18:36. > :18:40.after? After Wright crossed the line I felt really tired. I thought,

:18:40. > :18:43.I don't want to do that any time soon. Then I thought, you know,

:18:43. > :18:48.it's probably exactly what I do need to do. It's completely

:18:48. > :18:52.different training and racing, you have to be race-fit. We decided we

:18:52. > :18:55.didn't want to leave the three months until the start of the

:18:55. > :18:58.outdoor season. It would will reveal another couple of weeks

:18:58. > :19:02.until the championships. It shows the kind of esteem you are held

:19:02. > :19:07.within in UK Athletics that you've been made the captain as well. If

:19:07. > :19:11.the fantastic honour. When Peter asked me, I accepted straightaway.

:19:11. > :19:16.Two weeks ago I never believed I was in this championship and as a

:19:16. > :19:20.captain, so what really positive. How about going in there as

:19:20. > :19:24.defending champion? Yes. I've never gone into a Championships as

:19:25. > :19:30.defending champion before. I'm not sure realistically what my chances

:19:30. > :19:36.are. But certainly I take it very seriously. I am the defending

:19:36. > :19:41.champion. I definitely won't let that title slip easily. Boy you,

:19:41. > :19:45.this championship, how would you put into perspective what success

:19:45. > :19:50.would be for you? Having had that long road back from injury to get

:19:50. > :19:54.to this point. The cut will say the reason for you doing it is to

:19:54. > :19:58.practise your mental skills, really go through the whole scenario. A

:19:58. > :20:03.lot of people see as giving the race on television but it's all the

:20:03. > :20:06.build-up. You get a lot of nerves beforehand. The warm-up area can be

:20:06. > :20:14.quite daunting sometimes. Just to go through the whole routine is

:20:14. > :20:21.really important for me. I am a competitor. I will be trying my

:20:21. > :20:25.best, trying to defend my title. A lot of people wouldn't at -- expect

:20:25. > :20:30.it, I'm only ranked 7th or eighth going into the race, but I'd be

:20:30. > :20:37.really disappointed if I wasn't on the podium. Certainly a turnaround

:20:37. > :20:41.for Jenny Meadows. When she turned out at Birmingham, almost get a run

:20:41. > :20:45.in her legs, she ran better than anticipated, and here she is

:20:45. > :20:48.talking about the podium. I don't think Jenny would put herself on

:20:48. > :20:52.the line if she didn't really believe in her heart that a podium

:20:52. > :20:57.finish is possible. She ran well, she ran confidently, the way we are

:20:57. > :21:01.used to seeing her run. I do think, looking at the list, if she can get

:21:01. > :21:05.herself close to that two minute mark, it's not going to be easy,

:21:05. > :21:11.Benji is in with a good shot. great to have her back. A horrible

:21:11. > :21:17.year for her last year. She'd been building up, she was always in the

:21:17. > :21:20.mix for medals. Then a horrible time with her Achille -- her

:21:20. > :21:24.Achilles problem. It's an absolute nightmare. Every athlete hates

:21:24. > :21:28.getting injured. But when you lose a whole season and you dream of

:21:28. > :21:32.being an Olympian on your home turf, absolutely shattering. It was

:21:32. > :21:36.lovely to see her return and return in such a positive way. She wasn't

:21:36. > :21:39.frightened, she went up there and has competed well. I'm looking

:21:39. > :21:43.forward to her going through all of these grounds and in each race we

:21:43. > :21:47.will see an improvement from Jenny Meadows. I'm pretty sure she won't

:21:47. > :21:50.be far off that podium. She is the defending Chaplin, we can look back

:21:50. > :21:55.defending Chaplin, we can look back to that race in 2011. Defending

:21:55. > :21:58.champion, although she finished in second place. The Russian who beat

:21:58. > :22:03.her was banned for a doping violation, as was the Russian who

:22:03. > :22:10.finished in third place. So Marion Okoro had been upgraded to a bronze

:22:10. > :22:16.medal. Interestingly enough, in a Radio 5 Live interview, Peter

:22:16. > :22:25.Eriksson did talk about the issue with Russians and drug-taking. 33

:22:25. > :22:29.athletes at the moment currently A lot of people do speculate, they

:22:29. > :22:32.do point the finger to the Russians. But it's very surprising that Peter

:22:32. > :22:36.Eriksson would be so bold to make that statement ahead of these

:22:36. > :22:41.championships. He will really put the Russians under the Spotlight

:22:41. > :22:46.here. If you look at the 800m, of the European rankings this year

:22:46. > :22:52.we've got 10 Russians filling those spots, yet they only sent one of

:22:52. > :22:57.their girls here. It's interesting. Let's go to the commentary box and

:22:57. > :23:01.speak to Paul and Steve on this. Oh, they are not here. I'll come to you,

:23:01. > :23:07.Colin. The Russians do have to get their act together. What is

:23:07. > :23:08.surprising for me, you'd think you would learn by a mistake. When you

:23:09. > :23:13.think one, two, three members of your team are getting caught,

:23:13. > :23:16.perhaps you'd think, you know what, perhaps I'd better Steer clear of

:23:16. > :23:20.this nonsense now because we are tested and people are getting

:23:20. > :23:24.caught. That surprises me. They haven't really thought about it.

:23:24. > :23:30.Let's be honest, we hope it doesn't become an epidemic in Russia now,

:23:30. > :23:33.where drug-taking becomes the norm to get on a team. Let's hope

:23:33. > :23:39.they've learnt their lesson now and can get out there and compete as

:23:39. > :23:43.clean athletes. Shara Proctor is going in the women's long jump

:23:43. > :23:53.qualification. Before we catch up with her, let's go back to 1984. We

:23:53. > :23:59.

:23:59. > :24:09.would Kieran Goss -- Gothenburg, at six metres 70. That's another

:24:09. > :24:13.

:24:13. > :24:23.one that surely must challenge the and girl at six metres 55. She

:24:23. > :24:25.

:24:25. > :24:30.falls back a little bit at the end qualified for the final with a 6.70.

:24:30. > :24:39.Shara Proctor getting ready for her attempt to get into the final.

:24:39. > :24:43.Initially, I didn't have the Europeans in my plans. I just

:24:43. > :24:49.wanted to go out there and get a couple of competitions, get the

:24:49. > :24:56.rhythm down and get back to training for Moscow, because that's

:24:56. > :25:02.the big plan. I just so happened... It's another opportunity for me to

:25:02. > :25:05.get my name in the books and do a good job. I saw you perform so

:25:05. > :25:10.wonderfully well in Berlin, that place is obviously special in your

:25:10. > :25:19.heart now because you set a British record there. What does that kind

:25:19. > :25:24.of meeting and jumped to for your confidence? In practice, I see that

:25:24. > :25:28.I can go far. But doing it in competition is just special. I just

:25:28. > :25:34.love competing in the Birmingham arena. It's amazing. The crowd is

:25:34. > :25:39.amazing. They give me that extra energy to go further. It wasn't the

:25:39. > :25:43.British record but it was good enough to qualify for the Europeans.

:25:43. > :25:47.Now you are here in Gothenburg, do you have a feeling there's nothing

:25:47. > :25:55.to lose, this is a bonus, something you cannot plant, whatever comes

:25:55. > :26:03.comes? It is a bonus. Hopefully I will get a gold medal. I will come

:26:03. > :26:07.Before she can think about a medal, she has to follow -- qualified for

:26:07. > :26:17.the final. Paul Dickinson can bring us up to date with the early stages

:26:17. > :26:21.

:26:21. > :26:25.that's allowed in the qualifying competition. 6.65 is what is

:26:25. > :26:30.required to make it automatically through to the final. Not a bad

:26:30. > :26:34.take-off. The yellow line that superimposed is the automatic

:26:34. > :26:41.qualifying. It looks a little bit short of that. Having said that, I

:26:41. > :26:47.can't imagine eight women jumping 6.65 for further, judging from the

:26:47. > :26:52.entry list. Shara Proctor won a bronze medal in the world indoor

:26:52. > :26:59.championships last year. She smashed the British record.

:26:59. > :27:09.Subsequently finished 9th in the Olympic final. 6.61, the longest

:27:09. > :27:22.

:27:22. > :27:28.jump so far. Looking in good shape Looks about the same sort of

:27:28. > :27:32.distance that Shara Proctor achieved a few moments ago. Nobody

:27:32. > :27:37.has achieved the automatic qualifying distance so far. We had

:27:37. > :27:47.a long succession of false. Shara Proctor remains the longest jumper

:27:47. > :28:02.

:28:02. > :28:06.Europe this season indoors. Made massive improvements to win a world

:28:06. > :28:16.championship silver medal a few years ago. She, too, falls shy of

:28:16. > :28:24.

:28:24. > :28:30.She gets the white flag, that's place at the moment. 6.38. She, too,

:28:30. > :28:40.will have to jump again. The automatic qualifying distance is

:28:40. > :28:59.

:28:59. > :29:09.has jumped 7.05 outdoors, 6.80 indoors this season. Still not

:29:09. > :29:13.

:29:13. > :29:15.very close to the automatic qualifying distance. By the time

:29:15. > :29:25.the final comes tomorrow, I'm sure a lot of people will be jumping

:29:25. > :29:31.

:29:31. > :29:41.take-off again there. It's not bad, it's 6.62. That is the longest

:29:41. > :29:54.

:29:54. > :30:04.jumps so far, one centimetre ahead last year. A wild style. 24 years

:30:04. > :30:10.

:30:10. > :30:20.I think. Very smooth. But, the jump was off-balance, I am sure there is

:30:20. > :30:51.

:30:51. > :30:57.tall Frenchman closest to the camera, the fastest in the field. A

:30:57. > :31:07.little bit inconsistent. World indoor bronze last year. He needs

:31:07. > :31:20.

:31:20. > :31:25.win back on, it really good performance. He looked really good

:31:25. > :31:32.there. He had a great run at the French championships with a

:31:32. > :31:35.personal best. That is one of the best he has managed away from those

:31:35. > :31:43.French Indoor Championships. He looked fairly comfortable as well.

:31:43. > :31:47.Lopez got away very well as well. They go through to the next round.

:31:47. > :31:57.Just watch the Frenchman. He is not always the best out of the blocks

:31:57. > :32:12.

:32:12. > :32:17.event, the first time since 1996, a long time ago. Maybe Colin Jackson

:32:17. > :32:24.was one of his many holidays spent! Do you see much of this young

:32:24. > :32:28.French man? COLIN JACKSON: I have been looking

:32:28. > :32:38.forward to seeing him perform. He is not very aggressive out of the

:32:38. > :32:52.

:32:52. > :32:55.blocks. He is clean and smooth once performance firmly in the morning.

:32:55. > :33:05.No mistakes. A quick question. His first race,

:33:05. > :33:10.he ran 7.98. When you were running, did you get quicker?

:33:10. > :33:19.When I broke the world record, I got faster at the end of the season.

:33:19. > :33:25.Sometimes, you have to get into your group. Now, when it matters,

:33:25. > :33:32.he is delivering. That is going to be pretty close

:33:32. > :33:35.events, the best Europeans this year. Sergei Shubenkov is many

:33:36. > :33:45.people's favourite but the sky is not far away.

:33:46. > :33:57.

:33:57. > :34:03.The semi-finals are tonight at Very smooth and rangy. The French

:34:03. > :34:06.have a great addition with men's and women's hurdles. This looks

:34:06. > :34:10.like another one to joined that long list.

:34:10. > :34:20.He was very slowed but not as smooth as fouled Colin Jackson,

:34:20. > :34:33.

:34:33. > :34:39.He wasn't as fast as his semi-final. He says, I made hard work of that!

:34:39. > :34:49.The Jackson got away very well. Under pressure but he takes it, a

:34:49. > :34:57.

:34:57. > :35:02.blocks brilliantly, storming down in a semi-final qualification but

:35:02. > :35:09.Colin Jackson is the European indoor hurdles champion for a

:35:09. > :35:14.second time. You were very good, weren't you?

:35:14. > :35:19.By I got lucky at a couple of Championships, that's all! It was

:35:19. > :35:23.always very competitive for me, in the sprint and hurdles. The

:35:23. > :35:26.European indoors, it was a good grounding for me to learn under

:35:26. > :35:30.pressure. You would probably say that world

:35:30. > :35:39.record you had, indoors, the 60m hurdles, was much stronger than

:35:39. > :35:45.your outdoor record? I would always agree, 7.30, that was a tough call.

:35:45. > :35:55.I took six hundredths of a second from the world record. It was

:35:55. > :35:57.

:35:57. > :36:03.better than my others. It is a different day into line-up against

:36:03. > :36:08.sprinters. If yes, 6.4 denied was my best, when I won in Paris. I was

:36:08. > :36:18.always competitive. Alight ruffling the feathers of the sprinters, I

:36:18. > :36:20.

:36:20. > :36:30.knew I was half decent. I loved that. The second heat of the 60m

:36:30. > :37:10.

:37:10. > :37:20.Pascal Martinot Lagarde in the first heat, 7.58. The first three,

:37:20. > :37:44.

:37:44. > :37:54.and four fastest losers. The final Indoor Championships. This is a

:37:54. > :37:59.

:37:59. > :38:09.Not the height of some hurdlers, but most likely the man to catch

:38:09. > :38:29.

:38:29. > :38:35.here. 7.59, this season. His running in this heat, this season.

:38:35. > :38:45.The Spaniard there, who once competed for Ecuador. Buhler, a

:38:45. > :38:45.

:38:45. > :39:39.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:39:39. > :39:49.men's 60m hurdles. The first three cleanly. Going according to form

:39:49. > :39:50.

:39:50. > :39:56.pretty much. Baiazs Baji looked as if he came through to take it.

:39:56. > :40:06.COLIN JACKSON: Always very close. Veggie macro, I think, just took it

:40:06. > :40:07.

:40:07. > :40:17.past the Russian -- Baji. Once you get into your groove, it makes a

:40:17. > :40:30.

:40:30. > :40:40.morning for the hurdlers, they haven't quite got into their group.

:40:40. > :40:54.

:40:54. > :41:04.You have to get used to the track losers will also go through,

:41:04. > :41:18.

:41:18. > :41:22.in second place, behind Darya Klishina. Just one centimetre

:41:22. > :41:26.separating them. A foul in the first round, that looks a little

:41:26. > :41:36.better and she gets the white flag. She won't have the added pressure

:41:36. > :41:38.

:41:38. > :41:43.coming into the third round. That looks much better. Good height.

:41:43. > :41:47.Just short of the qualifying distance. But, ahead of what would

:41:47. > :41:57.constitute 8th place, and it is eight ladies who will make it

:41:57. > :42:11.

:42:11. > :42:19.through to the final tomorrow. Centre for in the first round --

:42:19. > :42:28.Denyaeva. She looks as if she is in the top eight, she gets the white

:42:28. > :42:34.flag. Shara Proctor it is still lying in second place. Nobody has

:42:34. > :42:44.surpassed her. That was produced in the first round. Apart from the

:42:44. > :42:58.

:42:58. > :43:04.Done further outdoors than she has indoors. That looks good actually,

:43:04. > :43:09.very close to the sort of distance that Shara Proctor achieved. It has

:43:09. > :43:16.just come up on the scoreboard that actually Shara Proctor has passed

:43:16. > :43:22.her second round jump. I think she is of the opinion has 6.6 to one is

:43:22. > :43:27.going to be enough to put her through to the final. Jarder is

:43:27. > :43:37.delighted with her jump. A big lifetime best for her, in the

:43:37. > :43:43.

:43:43. > :43:48.second heat in the 60m hurdles. Not as quick as the first heat. We

:43:48. > :43:52.shall see who goes through as the fastest loser.

:43:52. > :44:02.Wouldn't have a chance to show you the final result from that first

:44:02. > :44:23.

:44:23. > :44:33.heat, let us remind ourselves, it close as the first two. Going in

:44:33. > :44:43.lane seven, the man, as I said, very much the favourite for the

:44:43. > :44:43.

:44:43. > :45:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:45:27. > :45:37.We've lost that Ukrainian. 7.52. That's pretty shop for the first

:45:37. > :45:38.

:45:38. > :45:48.runs on a couple of occasions, but that is pretty sharp. Talk about

:45:48. > :45:52.

:45:52. > :46:02.his style, really low. Wheelie could, make him more aggressive in

:46:02. > :46:12.

:46:12. > :46:22.to bat first hurdle, set himself up better. At 752 - match but 7.52 is

:46:22. > :46:23.

:46:23. > :46:28.time, you can sometimes take some risks. When you do take those risks

:46:28. > :46:32.you end up a bit cleaner. For me, he's not under pressure, he can put

:46:32. > :46:38.a nice, decent performance out. You can't ask for much more at this

:46:38. > :46:42.time of the day. He is Europe's number one. He's round at 7.50.

:46:42. > :46:52.He's confident. But he also would have seen that first heat and said

:46:52. > :47:06.

:47:06. > :47:09.to himself, hang on, I am the main from the young Russian. We were

:47:09. > :47:13.talking about the Russians earlier, about the sort of Championships

:47:13. > :47:23.they may have. They've got a slightly weakened team here. They

:47:23. > :47:55.

:47:55. > :47:58.will be looking to the likes of qualifying distance of 6.65 yet. I

:47:58. > :48:08.just wonder if that's an improvement. It does look as though

:48:08. > :48:08.

:48:08. > :48:13.it is. -- it doesn't look as though it is. Kucherenko, 6.48 in the

:48:13. > :48:21.first round. She's way behind the board. She's lost 20 centimetres

:48:21. > :48:31.plus. That is quite decisive. She needs to put it all into a third

:48:31. > :48:37.

:48:37. > :48:41.round jump to make sure she gets a indoor champion. 6.62 in the first

:48:41. > :48:47.round. Backstays as the longest jump we've seen so far this morning.

:48:47. > :48:52.Didn't really get the take-off spot on there. It looked a little bit

:48:52. > :48:59.flat. Judging by her reaction when she came out of the pit, she knew

:48:59. > :49:03.that wasn't terribly good. A couple of jumpers behind her in the

:49:03. > :49:13.standings at the moment, including Shara Proctor, decided to pass on

:49:13. > :49:21.

:49:21. > :49:25.their second jumps. Klishina still she's sitting comfortably in the

:49:25. > :49:29.top eight, that will get her through to the final tomorrow.

:49:29. > :49:32.She's just waiting to see whether a few of the athletes go further.

:49:32. > :49:36.Let's talk about the context of this competition for work. She had

:49:36. > :49:41.a great year last year, world indoor bronze medal. Then the real

:49:41. > :49:44.disappointment of London. Yes, she jumped so well in the

:49:44. > :49:49.qualifications in London. I think she got a bit overawed by the

:49:49. > :49:53.occasion. I think she was thinking about the outcome before the final.

:49:53. > :49:58.So she then did and jumped well in the final, finished fifth. She

:49:58. > :50:04.could have meddled there. But she's such a good run on the runway.

:50:04. > :50:09.Noticing some of the girls have similar inaccuracies on the runway,

:50:09. > :50:19.she is spot on the board. She's having no problems with her one up

:50:19. > :50:23.

:50:23. > :50:31.6.61, that was automatic qualification, 6.65. No athletes so

:50:31. > :50:35.This is an important competition for her, after what happened in

:50:35. > :50:41.London, she will really want to come here and make an impact.

:50:41. > :50:44.at it. She knows she can jump big distances, but what is missing is

:50:44. > :50:54.the medals. I think this could really set her up nicely for the

:50:54. > :51:30.

:51:30. > :51:40.rest of the season, should she make fastest losers. Around about 7.76

:51:40. > :51:50.

:51:50. > :52:00.will get you in at the moment if the Italians have coming through at

:52:00. > :52:24.

:52:24. > :52:34.first three heats and the form of Martinot-Lagarde and Shubenkov.

:52:34. > :52:47.

:52:47. > :52:51.heats. You want to qualify, you want to save a little bit of energy,

:52:51. > :52:58.you want to look impressive to the other competitors have gone so far.

:52:58. > :53:08.But also, technique needs to be spot on. Any little slippy and you

:53:08. > :53:08.

:53:08. > :53:50.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:53:50. > :53:58.start of the day. Bascou seemed to get out there pretty sharpish.

:53:58. > :54:02.Bascou is the main form guy from France. He's the one we'd all look

:54:02. > :54:12.forward to being the number one from that country. It's the Italian

:54:12. > :54:23.

:54:23. > :54:32.what they're going to do with that. I think everybody is waiting to see

:54:32. > :54:36.what the marksman decides. Bascou is trying to look as small as

:54:36. > :54:40.possible here, hiding behind some of the other athletes. For on the

:54:40. > :54:49.computer it's not coming up as a false start, but we could see him

:54:49. > :54:54.twitch. Bascou wants the finger but the grim Reaper has come for him.

:54:54. > :55:00.It's not coming up as a false start and he's trying to plead his case,

:55:00. > :55:04.but we know that this is a lost cause. The rule is you've got to be

:55:04. > :55:07.stationary in the blocks when the starter it puts you in that set

:55:07. > :55:15.position. There's not supposed to be any movement whatsoever. We saw

:55:15. > :55:25.clearly that he moved. Let's see if he can argue or negotiate himself

:55:25. > :55:37.

:55:37. > :55:41.like his negotiation powers have allowed him back in. He will be

:55:42. > :55:48.relieved. Let's hope that he can just focus now one what he needs to

:55:48. > :55:58.do and qualifies. The next time I'm up in court, I want him to be my

:55:58. > :56:23.

:56:23. > :56:33.John Drummond when he was trying his little heart out, just sat

:56:33. > :56:33.

:56:33. > :57:17.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:57:17. > :57:27.there on the track eventually and for the minor places, but no doubt

:57:27. > :57:32.

:57:32. > :57:35.about the winner. Paolo Audel great start by the Italian. Put

:57:35. > :57:45.pressure on everybody straightaway. He's clattering barriers on his way

:57:45. > :57:46.

:57:46. > :57:53.down. Incredible. A Askou is going to have to wait because his

:57:53. > :57:58.opponents just seemed to sneak through ahead of him. -- Bascou.

:57:58. > :58:02.7.59 for the winner. Look at the Italian here. Untidy trail leg,

:58:02. > :58:08.he's dragging those barriers down with that trail leg, but it doesn't

:58:08. > :58:16.matter, he gets to the line first. An equal personal best of 7.59. A

:58:16. > :58:19.strong performance. We had confirmation of the times. I think

:58:19. > :58:29.Bath School survived his false start, he survived here as well as

:58:29. > :58:40.

:58:40. > :58:50.one of the fastest losers, 7.72 his the full results as and when we get

:58:50. > :58:58.

:58:58. > :59:02.for this qualification in the eliminated. But with that jump, I

:59:02. > :59:10.think she could have put herself in quite a strong position. The best

:59:10. > :59:14.so far, 6.46. Needs something close to 6.60 to guarantee she goes

:59:14. > :59:17.through to the final. She might well have done it with that. Shara

:59:17. > :59:27.Proctor, it remains to be seen whether she's going to take a third

:59:27. > :59:45.

:59:45. > :59:53.and final jump. She passed on round final, at the moment. That was a

:59:53. > :00:03.tremendous take-off. She gets the white flag. Danny macro. She is

:00:03. > :00:16.

:00:16. > :00:23.into a qualifying position now -- She is in 7th place, but there are

:00:23. > :00:31.still a lot of jumpers to come in this third and final round.

:00:31. > :00:41.The let us tidier things for you, this is how they finished. -- tidy

:00:41. > :01:14.

:01:14. > :01:24.looking very good. As his Pascal participants in the men's 60m

:01:24. > :01:36.

:01:36. > :01:45.It has been a great indoor season for you so far, word you pitch your

:01:45. > :01:50.is nice coming into the European Athletics Indoor Championships. At

:01:50. > :01:54.the end of the day, it counts what you do on the day, no matter what

:01:54. > :02:04.fast time someone may have been running. Someone may come out of

:02:04. > :02:11.

:02:11. > :02:19.nowhere. I have to do what I usually do, not become complacent.

:02:19. > :02:29.You have shot up the list of the best UK times, up of all time. Have

:02:29. > :02:32.

:02:32. > :02:38.I work hard, I trained hard with my coach, he wants the best for me.

:02:38. > :02:48.The times, be surprised me, maybe. I am running pretty quick. You

:02:48. > :02:50.

:02:50. > :02:56.always seem to want more, as an faster. I accept I am happy with

:02:56. > :03:06.lot to prove after the disappointment of last summer,

:03:06. > :03:10.

:03:10. > :03:15.this heat. A newly-laid track, more of that in a moment. Not too

:03:15. > :03:25.difficult qualification for Perri Shakes-Drayton. She is on the

:04:10. > :04:17.choice, you either get in front and control it from there, or sit

:04:17. > :04:21.behind. Hjelmer is not close enough. This is pretty quick through the

:04:21. > :04:27.first 200, given this is a qualification round. She can relax

:04:27. > :04:33.a bit but not too much. In great form this winter. She set her stall

:04:33. > :04:37.out to do well individually on the flat, not just wanted to be part of

:04:37. > :04:46.the relay squad. A really strong performance from her in the first

:04:46. > :04:49.round. That is not a bad start at all. She could have sauntered

:04:49. > :04:59.around bet in 53 seconds, to be honest. That looked fairly

:04:59. > :05:21.

:05:21. > :05:25.Eilidh Child is going in heat three. metres. A good rehearsal. When she

:05:25. > :05:30.goes through the rounds, she will come up against better competition.

:05:30. > :05:34.She will want to take how she goes through the first 200 metres. Does

:05:40. > :05:45.That was about staying away, trying to control the race. She didn't

:05:45. > :05:49.look to be fading too much in the final 50 either.

:05:49. > :05:55.We were down here yesterday watching a lot of the athletes

:05:55. > :05:59.going through warm ups. New track. The general consensus was at the

:06:41. > :06:52.

:06:52. > :06:56.A quick look at the result. Very An impressive start, tell me, you

:06:56. > :07:01.talked to your coach about how you wanted to execute the race? Funnily

:07:01. > :07:10.enough, the coach was talking to me through a window because he never

:07:10. > :07:15.had a pass to get through! We had a lot of hand sign language! He said,

:07:15. > :07:21.do what you practise in training. You always want to run well. And

:07:21. > :07:29.get a good lane. Roll on, the semi- finals. And he sent out a message

:07:29. > :07:37.to your rivals. I didn't expect to go out that fast in my first round.

:07:37. > :07:44.It is out of me now. You seem like you are building in confidence,

:07:44. > :07:47.race after race. If it is always nerve-racking in the heats. I knew

:07:47. > :07:53.I was more than capable of getting through but you have to get into

:07:53. > :08:03.the top two. I don't want to become complacent. A tremendous start,

:08:03. > :08:19.

:08:19. > :08:25.Andrew Cotter takes us through this see with the line-up. Very

:08:25. > :08:35.impressive, Perri Shakes-Drayton. What can Shana Cox do? This is how

:08:35. > :08:35.

:08:35. > :09:20.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:10:29. > :10:34.automatically, the four fastest losers, through to the semi-final

:10:34. > :10:40.which takes place tomorrow. Kseniya Ustalova making sure now. Shana Cox

:10:40. > :10:50.will have to finish hard for a good time in third place at the moment.

:10:50. > :10:52.

:10:52. > :11:00.have to wait to see what her time was. A very strong run from

:11:00. > :11:10.Morosanu. The 26-year-old Romanian who went on to hold off Kseniya

:11:10. > :11:35.

:11:35. > :11:40.well in the past couple of years. We need to see her running with a

:11:40. > :11:44.bit more confidence. She is looking good here, holding her form. But,

:11:44. > :11:50.at the break, you see that slight hesitation where she should have

:11:50. > :11:56.tried to commit herself, and get ahead of the Russian. She is

:11:56. > :12:00.sitting on her shoulder, looking good. But, with that first two

:12:00. > :12:04.qualifying positions taking through the athlete to the semi-finals, she

:12:04. > :12:14.needed to do a bit more at this stage.

:12:14. > :12:17.

:12:17. > :12:27.Shana Cox, fighting all the way down. Just inside 53 seconds. She

:12:27. > :12:29.

:12:29. > :12:34.will wait. In the first heat, third A waiting game, I suppose, how

:12:34. > :12:39.would you assess your performance? For my first round, it didn't feel

:12:39. > :12:46.too bad, I would have liked it to be a bit faster. It is about

:12:46. > :12:55.advancing right now. What was your mind set on, at the start line,

:12:55. > :13:03.Asos tactical in the 400 -- so tactical. It is a completely

:13:03. > :13:13.different game, so many other it and compete. Let us hope that

:13:13. > :13:35.

:13:35. > :13:37.time is quick enough for you, we At the start of the year, where do

:13:37. > :13:44.the European Athletics Indoor Championships fit into the scheme

:13:44. > :13:48.of things? When Malcolm and myself discussed the indoor season, we did

:13:48. > :13:53.have this as a good target, we thought it would be great to go

:13:53. > :13:59.into the individual, the 4x400 metres would be the main option.

:13:59. > :14:05.The season got better and better and it was a realistic target. To

:14:05. > :14:09.be third in Europe, I didn't expect to be turning up, in that position.

:14:09. > :14:14.Coming into this weekend, considering your position in Europe,

:14:14. > :14:21.how are you thinking through the event? Is it a good opportunity for

:14:21. > :14:28.a medal this week? If I wasn't going for a medal, I shouldn't be

:14:28. > :14:34.here. It is about running the right race, with my game plan, and,

:14:34. > :14:40.hopefully, if I do that, it will be enough to win that medal. The in

:14:40. > :14:50.amongst the dolls pool are running fast, Perri Shakes-Drayton, it is

:14:50. > :15:03.

:15:03. > :15:07.not going to be easy at all -- draw. Things have been going so

:15:07. > :15:11.well for her. Her coach has been saying that this indoor season is

:15:11. > :15:14.really going to help her outdoors as well. She's got a really good

:15:14. > :15:19.chance of doing well in these championships. This is probably one

:15:19. > :15:27.of the toughest of the heats in this first round. She has Rosolova,

:15:27. > :15:37.the defending champion, inside of her. The junior record of holder

:15:37. > :16:00.

:16:00. > :16:04.for Fenland Yngling four. -- for well, 26 years of age now. She has

:16:04. > :16:08.been run down by this young 19- year-old Finnish athlete who's been

:16:09. > :16:13.having such a good season. She broke the junior record in their

:16:13. > :16:23.Championships a couple of weeks ago. Eilidh Child recognising the talent

:16:23. > :16:27.

:16:27. > :16:37.and coming across nicely to take back straight. Rosolova in second

:16:37. > :16:50.

:16:50. > :17:00.little bit to spare here. -- Eilidh Child. Not quite as quick as Perri

:17:00. > :17:02.

:17:02. > :17:07.Shakes-Drayton. Very impressive come through these rounds, it's not

:17:07. > :17:10.just about getting through but by winning, you talk about the link

:17:10. > :17:15.road, you want to be in those outside two lanes in the semi-

:17:15. > :17:19.finals. Yes, that lane draw will give an advantage to the runners

:17:19. > :17:23.were they need to work that turn, come off in a commanding position

:17:23. > :17:30.and feel they are controlling the race. That is exactly what Eilidh

:17:30. > :17:40.Child did in this one. She was confident. Just made sure she did

:17:40. > :17:43.

:17:43. > :17:48.these early qualifications, making sure in the 400m that you get out,

:17:48. > :17:58.get in front and establish yourself in the race. That is exactly what

:17:58. > :18:03.she did here. Sharnet Cox's ways, she was determined. You could see

:18:03. > :18:10.the look in her face. Making sure that cadence work to the front.

:18:10. > :18:16.Eilidh Child has a much more experienced runner than Chana. You

:18:16. > :18:19.heard her talk about having her race plan, and she stuck to it.

:18:19. > :18:24.Wasn't too impressed with Rosolova. She's not in the sort of shape she

:18:24. > :18:31.was a couple of years ago when she won this title, but she's got a lot

:18:31. > :18:35.of experience. Eilidh Child gaining experience all the time. 52.05. If

:18:35. > :18:44.you'd said that at the start of the season she would probably have been

:18:44. > :18:48.unhappy. But it's looking a little Another excellent performance from

:18:48. > :18:53.you in what has been a tremendous season so far. Tell me about it

:18:53. > :18:57.from your perspective. I wanted to automatically qualify, wanted to

:18:57. > :19:02.win the heat. Try and keep as much energy as possible for tomorrow, so

:19:03. > :19:06.I think I did that. It's always tough indoors but I'm happy.

:19:06. > :19:10.guys in commentary were talking about how important it is to get a

:19:10. > :19:15.good lane draw as well. That's it. My coach said to me, when the heat

:19:15. > :19:19.so you can secure a good lane for the semi. You showed great maturity

:19:19. > :19:22.for a relative novice to this kind of event when you saw that

:19:22. > :19:26.challenge on the first lap and came across and took control. I knew I

:19:26. > :19:36.had to break close. It makes it so much easier going into the second

:19:36. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:53.lap. Once I got it I could be in 52.05. Two national records from

:19:53. > :20:00.the finish junior, she's not a big chunk of her personal best. She

:20:00. > :20:10.will definitely go through as the fastest loser. Shana Cox passed

:20:10. > :20:19.across her fingers, she's got one stages of this qualifying

:20:19. > :20:25.competition for the women's long jump. She needs something in excess

:20:25. > :20:33.of 6.50 in order to move up the table into a place or better. Not

:20:33. > :20:43.so quick on the runway as somebody like Klishina. She reckons she's

:20:43. > :20:52.

:20:52. > :20:58.improvements over the last 12 months. But still nobody has got

:20:58. > :21:04.the automatic qualifying distance of 6.65. Still being led by

:21:04. > :21:07.Klishina, the defending champion, with Shara Proctor in second place.

:21:07. > :21:17.6.50 for the Ukrainian. It looks as though she may make it through to

:21:17. > :21:17.

:21:17. > :21:58.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:21:58. > :22:08.women's 400m. The two to look out The strong as looking athletes on

:22:08. > :22:15.

:22:15. > :22:25.on the outside. Hejnova comes in at the break out in front, but it's

:22:25. > :22:25.

:22:25. > :23:33.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:23:33. > :23:37.and fourth place. Hejnova is going Hejnova, not too impressive,

:23:37. > :23:47.impressive enough form but not necessarily on the time. No fastest

:23:47. > :24:03.

:24:03. > :24:13.loser to come through from this Kucherenko could be in danger of

:24:13. > :24:24.

:24:24. > :24:33.eliminating her tea made, deny cava as well. But that could be long

:24:33. > :24:43.enough. 6.50 is the distance she has to so pass in order to make it.

:24:43. > :24:48.She's done it, 6.54. Moves into 6th place. Nobody achieved the

:24:48. > :24:58.automatic qualifying distance of 6.65. But it was led by Klishina of

:24:58. > :25:02.

:25:02. > :25:07.Congratulations, that was a very comfortable qualifying for you. One

:25:07. > :25:13.jump and you are through. Yes. I just have to be smart about it. I

:25:13. > :25:17.kept looking at the results. It was either just keep jumping or be

:25:17. > :25:22.smart, and they chose to be smart. You don't want to put yourself to

:25:23. > :25:29.any risk by taking Essers -- and necessary dumps before the final.

:25:29. > :25:34.Exactly. You are looking good again. How did it feel for you? It was a

:25:34. > :25:40.little rough. It's 10am, it's 9am back in the UK. I was a little

:25:40. > :25:50.sleepy but I still have to come out here and pour it out. We wish you

:25:50. > :26:02.

:26:02. > :26:12.All four heats were won by 400m point of view, as we look at the

:26:12. > :26:20.

:26:20. > :26:24.defending. Shana Cox is also going through as one of the four fastest

:26:24. > :26:34.losers. Three British women through to the semi-finals, which take

:26:34. > :26:36.

:26:36. > :26:41.Shara Proctor safely through in the long jump. All three women through

:26:41. > :26:45.in the 400m. Hurdles, because it's all the hurdlers doing it on the

:26:45. > :26:50.Flat. What can I say? Sally Gunnell was always successful as well. It's

:26:50. > :27:00.not too much of a surprise that the hurdlers are doing it with great

:27:00. > :27:02.

:27:02. > :27:07.form. What a wonderful performance most comfortable of the qualifiers.

:27:07. > :27:10.I think she surprised herself. what I loved about this is she is

:27:10. > :27:15.in the outside lane, so what she decides to do is run her own race.

:27:15. > :27:19.This is what I'm here to do, I'm not going to mix up with anybody.

:27:19. > :27:22.She ran a committed race. She didn't try to play any games. Just

:27:22. > :27:27.a really controlled run. Even when you look at her face, she was

:27:27. > :27:31.focused on what was necessary, she went round all the corners well,

:27:31. > :27:36.there's no way obstructions. She just needed to do this. When she

:27:36. > :27:39.looked at the time she said, oh, I'm surprised at the time. But when

:27:39. > :27:45.you are in great shape, as she is demonstrating, it's not really a

:27:46. > :27:53.surprise. It's probably as easy to run like that as it is to maybe say,

:27:53. > :27:58.I'm going to run out at playing it at conserving energy. I always say,

:27:58. > :28:02.don't mess about. Just do what you can do. If you are capable of

:28:02. > :28:07.running 51 seconds, run 51 seconds. It's not going to take anything out

:28:07. > :28:11.of her because she is a well trained athlete, she's in great

:28:11. > :28:15.shape and good condition. looked good, as did Eilidh Child.

:28:15. > :28:18.Not quite as quick but again, she was in the right place at the right

:28:18. > :28:22.time. What I loved about this performance was a sense of

:28:22. > :28:26.awareness of what was happening around her. There were lots of

:28:26. > :28:31.women inside her who were quick and were pushing this early stage of

:28:31. > :28:35.the event. She didn't panic, she just gently accelerated. She didn't

:28:35. > :28:40.kick, because they kick can cause you some fatigue a little too early.

:28:40. > :28:43.She took control at the bell and now she can Brive. She's got clear

:28:43. > :28:47.heir to run through. Nothing to worry about. She will have a couple

:28:47. > :28:52.of glances at the screen to see where everybody is bad again, a

:28:52. > :28:57.really competent performance. I was watching her coach, Malcolm Arnold,

:28:57. > :29:00.on his stopwatch, taking all these times. No doubt he will feed that

:29:01. > :29:06.back to her shortly. Denise, you must have been particularly

:29:06. > :29:11.impressed with both Eilidh Child and Perri Shakes-Drayton.

:29:11. > :29:16.delighted with seeing the girls run. I expected both of them to qualify

:29:16. > :29:21.comfortably. They've been showing great form recently. Getting the

:29:21. > :29:25.balance right indoors without affecting your outdoor performance

:29:25. > :29:29.is a fine art. Should you do a bit more speed, should you still keep

:29:29. > :29:32.working on your speed and endurance? It's clear both those

:29:32. > :29:36.girls have still got more to do, but they are running well, they are

:29:36. > :29:40.into the semi-finals and it's great. Looking across the rest of those

:29:40. > :29:44.heats and the other runners who won, perhaps Perri, well, she did look

:29:44. > :29:54.the strongest not just on times but in terms of the rate she ran the

:29:54. > :29:59.

:29:59. > :30:02.It was a good demonstration of what great shape I'm in, what I can do,

:30:02. > :30:08.what I can deliver and I'm just going to do that. It's brilliant to

:30:08. > :30:18.see. We'll get back to the track now for the women's 60 metre

:30:18. > :30:33.

:30:33. > :30:38.the defending champion, she has won twice in 2010 and 2012.

:30:38. > :30:48.She has run a really quick time. She is not known for running so

:30:48. > :30:50.

:30:51. > :30:57.much indoors. Chatting with the Irish contingent yesterday, they

:30:57. > :31:07.reckon Derval O'Rourke is in the best form since 2006. This is a

:31:07. > :31:15.

:31:15. > :31:24.tough qualification, the top four hurdles in these chamipionships.

:31:24. > :31:34.Now, the French, Dicko has been running very well this year. --

:31:34. > :31:51.

:31:51. > :31:59.kit if it is confusing you, black persuade the starters but he should

:31:59. > :32:03.line up again. But that will be the -- that will not be the case here.

:32:03. > :32:09.She would have been an outside chance perhaps of a medal, it is a

:32:09. > :32:14.very competitive field. An outside chance, she would certainly have

:32:14. > :32:21.been hoping to get into the final. That makes it a little easier for

:32:21. > :32:31.the seven who are left. Interesting to see how Nevin Yanit goes. Her

:32:31. > :32:45.

:32:45. > :32:55.first race this year she was O'Rourke. Nevin Yanit wins it from

:32:55. > :32:59.

:32:59. > :33:09.athlete, she is renowned for starting quickly outdoors. Nevin

:33:09. > :33:19.

:33:19. > :33:25.Yanit, if she gets it all right, Turkish record. She did well in the

:33:25. > :33:32.Olympic Games, finishing 5th in London. Not renowned for her indoor

:33:32. > :33:42.racing. An early indication to the competitors she will be difficult

:33:42. > :33:55.

:33:55. > :34:02.athlete. She has been competing well. A lot of people would have

:34:02. > :34:12.said, and we are seeing Alina Talay shot a, everybody has realised

:34:12. > :34:18.

:34:18. > :34:24.What is it like getting through that early-morning round? It was

:34:24. > :34:30.good for me, I haven't had a very many races, it was good to get the

:34:30. > :34:34.legs rolling. Word has it from the Irish camp you are running into

:34:35. > :34:39.fantastic for which sure you become a world champion a few years back.

:34:39. > :34:45.I feel like I am in good shape. I wasn't planning an indoor season,

:34:45. > :34:51.it is a bonus. I will be trying hard to get into the final. We wish

:34:51. > :34:56.you well. Thank you. Com pensive coverage of these

:34:56. > :35:06.European Athletics Indoor Championships in the next few days.

:35:06. > :35:23.

:35:23. > :35:33.Nevin Yanit, through comfortably. A lack of British end -- interest

:35:33. > :35:33.

:35:33. > :35:40.here, very disappointing. Absolutely. We were looking forward

:35:40. > :35:50.to seeing Andrew Pozzi, coming back from injury. Unfortunately, he

:35:50. > :35:54.

:35:54. > :35:59.picked up another injury on a hamstring and has to sit out.

:35:59. > :36:03.Sometimes, you decide, I am going to do a couple of races to get rid

:36:03. > :36:08.of the boredom of the winter training but I don't want the added

:36:08. > :36:18.pressure of a major championships. You always want to perform well.

:36:18. > :36:25.You don't want to give a half performance. So I can understand

:36:25. > :36:31.Tivoli -- Tiffany's dilemma. If it is an interesting decision.

:36:31. > :36:37.always took it very seriously. Denise very rarely did it. She

:36:37. > :36:46.decided never to do it. Again, it is about your selection policy on

:36:46. > :36:56.what you need to do in the summer. I was focusing into August so I had

:36:56. > :37:01.

:37:01. > :37:11.when from Nevin Yanit. A season's best for a rock macro. Same she was

:37:11. > :37:44.

:37:44. > :37:54.best for a rock macro. Same she was Neziri of Finland, the Finnish

:37:54. > :38:21.

:38:21. > :38:31.record hold all -- holder, indoors this is a fairly even race on paper

:38:31. > :38:37.

:38:37. > :38:43.resolution PhotoFinish is to separate them, very close indeed.

:38:43. > :38:52.Yulia Kondakova began to fade a little bit. Instead, coming through

:38:52. > :39:02.in lane three, Aerts of Belgium. So Grabban -- Skrobakova just about

:39:02. > :39:19.

:39:19. > :39:28.dipped for that. Skrobakova, for me. They are being shown at the same

:39:28. > :39:33.time. In fact, Aerts has been given the same time as well. It matters

:39:33. > :39:38.not, there's first four in the inside four lens will go through

:39:38. > :39:42.automatically, at a cracking finish, Denise Lewis.

:39:42. > :39:50.4th what a great race, we knew these were the main protagonists,

:39:50. > :39:56.good, solid hurdling. The Belgian record holder, she won their

:39:56. > :40:05.championships. Yulia Kondakova, the fastest time in Europe, but didn't

:40:05. > :40:12.look as sharp as we have seen her. A diminutive figure. The Russian

:40:12. > :40:22.indoor champion. 31, now. Running as quickly as she ever has, in fact,

:40:22. > :40:25.

:40:25. > :40:32.quicker. I think she has been given Those are the four automatic

:41:49. > :41:59.was going to be a quick time. 34 points ahead of her nearest rival

:41:59. > :42:01.

:42:01. > :42:08.even after the end of the first of the first event. Hannah

:42:08. > :42:12.Melnychenko got the second fastest time in that hurdles race. 34

:42:12. > :42:22.points behind the French champion. Remona Fransen won the first heat,

:42:22. > :42:28.

:42:28. > :42:35.watching the pentathlon with a keen eye. You actually never did one of

:42:35. > :42:39.these, what was your reasoning behind that? Usually, I was focused

:42:39. > :42:43.on my outdoor performance and I never felt I had enough speed in

:42:43. > :42:49.the winter months to justify being at the championships. It was a

:42:49. > :42:54.decision, I and maybe do if you events, but no pentathlon for me.

:42:54. > :42:59.Athletes have to make this decision, do they want to do seriously

:42:59. > :43:05.competitively indoors? Jessica and this does take the indoors very

:43:05. > :43:11.seriously. Silver medal at the world indoors last year, she chose

:43:11. > :43:16.to give it a miss this season. did, there has been a lot going on,

:43:16. > :43:20.be a busy few months for her. Really, I don't think she should do

:43:20. > :43:25.the indoors, and glad she is focusing solely on those World

:43:25. > :43:30.Championships in Moscow. Which leaves the pentathlon wide open

:43:31. > :43:38.here. Ekaterina Bolshova had the leading performers of the year. But,

:43:38. > :43:43.after that, the performances, it is very competitive.

:43:43. > :43:53.We will keep you updated with the pad triathlon. Heat three of the

:43:53. > :44:07.

:44:07. > :44:17.field, but it will be tight again. In that lane three. The first four

:44:17. > :44:23.

:44:23. > :44:30.through. In the middle, Svetlana Topilina. I think Veronica Borsi

:44:30. > :44:36.will go well. Alina Talay, the under 23 champion. She made the

:44:36. > :44:43.semi-finals at the Olympic Games. A very good indoor runner. Silver

:44:43. > :44:53.medal at the world indoors last year. Silver medal outdoors at the

:44:53. > :45:08.

:45:08. > :45:12.European Championships last year as talking about the fact that this is

:45:12. > :45:16.probably one of the most competitive events at these

:45:16. > :45:26.European Indoor Championships. The first four only through to the

:45:26. > :45:51.

:45:51. > :45:56.She beat Yvette Lewis recently in her last race before coming to

:45:56. > :46:00.these championships. Coming through nicely towards the end. Topilina

:46:00. > :46:10.just fading towards the end. The Italian, who's been having such a

:46:10. > :46:26.

:46:26. > :46:30.good season, those three will go championships with a much stronger

:46:30. > :46:33.team, particularly in the women's events. I'm not sure they have too

:46:33. > :46:43.many medal chances but she is certainly the best one they have

:46:43. > :46:47.One of our Olympic champions here, Mo Farah is training and getting

:46:47. > :46:54.ready for the marathon in America. For Jess and Greg Rutherford, a

:46:54. > :47:03.slightly different excuse. You can see just there with the Beefeaters.

:47:03. > :47:09.She got a CBE. For Greg Rutherford, looking resplendent in his tales,

:47:09. > :47:13.he got an MBE. Nicola Adams got a gold medal in the boxing, she was

:47:13. > :47:23.alongside them. Together at the Palace, they were also together the

:47:23. > :47:31.

:47:31. > :47:39.night they won that gold medal. It shoulders of Jessica Ennis. When I

:47:39. > :47:46.look back, I do feel there was so much pressure. My goodness, the

:47:46. > :47:50.fastest time ever by a heptathlete! Jess Ennis is flying. The whole of

:47:50. > :47:56.the heptathlon was nerve-racking, every event was nerve-racking in a

:47:56. > :48:06.different way. But the 800, it was that feeling of you've got so far,

:48:06. > :48:11.

:48:11. > :48:16.you are practically there, you can be the Olympic champion. Everybody

:48:16. > :48:26.is on their feet. The pride of Sheffield, the pride of Great

:48:26. > :48:57.

:48:57. > :49:02.the moment. Can he feed off this atmosphere? It's big! Can you

:49:02. > :49:12.believe what is happening in this stadium at the moment? 8.31. That

:49:12. > :49:20.

:49:20. > :49:30.try and forget that, just think about how hard you work too.

:49:30. > :49:37.

:49:37. > :49:45.can deny Greg Rutherford from Olympic gold. That is a fowl. Greg

:49:45. > :49:55.Rutherford is the Olympic champion. I don't think he can quite believe

:49:55. > :50:13.

:50:13. > :50:19.The crowd are lifting him, they are cheering him on. Just 100m to go.

:50:19. > :50:29.Has he got enough? Mo Farah is going for it. It's going to be a

:50:29. > :50:43.

:50:43. > :50:53.glorious win. Mo Farah for Great yourself? Of course it happened.

:50:53. > :50:58.

:50:58. > :51:04.Three gold medals for Great Britain. We are sitting here asking, did

:51:04. > :51:08.that really happen? I mean... Colin and I was sitting next to each

:51:08. > :51:11.other in Singapore for the decision when Jack Roxette London rather

:51:11. > :51:17.than Paris. If you'd have told us then that we'd get a night like

:51:17. > :51:21.that we'd have said, no. Yes. It was breathtaking. I thoroughly

:51:22. > :51:26.enjoyed it. I went back to an athletics fan that evening. Forget

:51:26. > :51:32.the fact I was working with the BBC, I was absorbed with everybody else,

:51:32. > :51:37.with the excitement, the euphoric feeling. And the expectation. When

:51:37. > :51:44.the athletes still a good time and time... In, what, 45 minutes? It

:51:44. > :51:48.was remarkable. I'm glad I was there. And very different victories

:51:48. > :51:52.in their own weight. Let's start with Greg. We thought he was in

:51:52. > :51:56.with a chance but that was unexpected. Yes. I think he would

:51:56. > :52:02.have said that himself. He was thinking, right, I'm going to

:52:02. > :52:06.qualify well. Nobody was jumping very far. He just thought, right,

:52:06. > :52:11.he is my opportunity. He raised his game, launched himself and he had a

:52:11. > :52:15.just victory. It was tremendous. It was a long build-up. Remember way

:52:15. > :52:19.back when he was a 21-year-old and won his first silver medal in the

:52:19. > :52:22.championships, we all said, watch this man. But then he got injury

:52:23. > :52:28.upon injury. But to come to London and nail the performance when it

:52:28. > :52:33.matters, the Olympic Games, had to offer. And that was here in

:52:33. > :52:37.Gothenburg, the silver medal. For Jessica Ennis, she'd lost the world

:52:37. > :52:44.indoors in the Olympic year, and yet she was the face of the Games.

:52:44. > :52:50.Huge pressures. The weight of the world, or at least of Britain, on

:52:50. > :52:53.them. She started off with a new British record in the 100m hurdles.

:52:53. > :52:58.From thereon in we knew what we could expect. We were biting our

:52:59. > :53:02.nails when it came to that javelin. Was she going to be able to launch

:53:02. > :53:07.it successfully? She did that, everybody breathed a sigh of relief

:53:07. > :53:10.and then she took the 800m. What a great way to finish. She threw her

:53:10. > :53:14.hands up in the air. Relief, excitement, every single emotion in

:53:14. > :53:18.the world went through her body at that time. I remember the

:53:18. > :53:23.conversations that you and I have about chess. I said, maybe she's

:53:23. > :53:31.just a little bit small. No, she's full of spring. She demonstrated

:53:31. > :53:37.that. A really great asset to us in Great Britain. As Steve Cram said

:53:37. > :53:41.in commentary, it's over to you, Mo. Mo Farah has been coming for a very

:53:41. > :53:45.long time. We were wondering if he could really turn the magic on

:53:45. > :53:50.against the East Africans, Kenyans and Ethiopians. He took a bold

:53:50. > :53:53.decision after being the double European champion. We all went,

:53:53. > :53:57.you've just one two gold medals in major championships and you are

:53:57. > :54:01.leaving this set up to go to the US? We were anxious for him. But he

:54:01. > :54:05.proved us wrong and came back with a world championship gold medal and

:54:05. > :54:09.a silver medal and arrived in London in great shape. Again, a lot

:54:09. > :54:15.of expectation. We wanted him to go out there. We knew he could put the

:54:15. > :54:20.question was, was he going to? When he kicked in that final with 100m

:54:20. > :54:26.to go, everybody was... We lost our boys as, Breathless, it was

:54:26. > :54:34.fantastic. I felt I'd won it with him! And we did it a week later in

:54:34. > :54:40.the 5000m. Do you think Mo has got the credit he deserves for being a

:54:40. > :54:46.double Olympic... The 5000m and the 10,000 metres are dominated by the

:54:46. > :54:51.African nations. To come in and do that is beyond belief. We've had

:54:51. > :54:54.some great athletes, from Steve cram himself to Sebastian Coe and

:54:55. > :54:58.Steve Ovett. None have them have done doubles. He's done it in

:54:58. > :55:01.distance running against Supreme opposition. It goes to prove that

:55:01. > :55:08.the real quality of this man is there. But you don't know what

:55:08. > :55:12.you've lost until it's gone. When retiring and going to the marathon,

:55:12. > :55:17.then we will perhaps realise how great he is. We do appreciate what

:55:17. > :55:22.he's doing now but do we recognise his greatness? Perhaps not. Perhaps

:55:22. > :55:25.he just needs to break a world record. We hope that. It would be

:55:25. > :55:31.great if he did it in the Olympic Stadium. We are back there but two

:55:31. > :55:34.days of the London Diamond League. The legacy of the stadium rumbles

:55:34. > :55:38.on, West Ham are the preferred bidder and maybe they'll be playing

:55:38. > :55:43.football there but not in the near future. To have the London Grand

:55:43. > :55:46.Prix in the Olympic stadium is very special. I'm excited about it. A

:55:46. > :55:50.lot of people wanted to come to the Olympic Games and couldn't get

:55:50. > :55:55.tickets to go and see the stadium. Now this iconic venue, where people

:55:55. > :55:58.like Usain Bolt ran tremendously well, Jess Ennis won a gold medal,

:55:58. > :56:02.I think now people have the opportunity to come and see that

:56:02. > :56:06.Stadium. I'm hoping the athletes will have a full house to go and

:56:06. > :56:10.perform in. It's a great thing for the stadium, great thing for London

:56:10. > :56:16.and superb for British athletics. In terms of the pressure on those

:56:16. > :56:21.three athletes, and particularly on Greg, he took advantage of perhaps

:56:21. > :56:24.what was not the strongest long jump competition. He has got the

:56:24. > :56:30.Olympic champion against his name but he is perhaps not the best in

:56:30. > :56:33.the world. It's interesting. When you get the responsibility of being

:56:33. > :56:37.a major champion, then you've really got to take that on your

:56:37. > :56:41.shoulders. I think Greg will work certainly hard. Every single

:56:41. > :56:46.Championships that he's healthy, I'm seeing that he's going to get a

:56:46. > :56:55.medal. I'm saying, yes, stick with Greg, I think he can produce the

:56:55. > :57:05.goods. And he's still got an 8.50 jump in him. Let's get back to the

:57:05. > :57:06.

:57:06. > :57:15.they all are. Talay winning that last heat. A pretty good

:57:15. > :57:24.performance from her. Topilina did go through. Pedersen with a new

:57:24. > :57:33.personal best. She will be one of the fastest losers. Yanit is

:57:33. > :57:43.definitely the best in terms of how she looked. O'Rourke may have an

:57:43. > :57:45.

:57:45. > :57:55.outside chance of taking a medal is going to be close. It's going to

:57:55. > :57:58.

:57:58. > :58:02.normally qualified and have their final on the same day. But

:58:02. > :58:12.yesterday evening was the scene for the qualifying competition for the

:58:12. > :58:12.

:58:12. > :58:22.men's shot but final this evening. One of only three putters to go

:58:22. > :58:25.

:58:25. > :58:30.over 20 metres. His best throw came in the third round. This was the

:58:30. > :58:40.second place athlete. A spinner who almost fell out of the circle. It

:58:40. > :58:48.

:58:48. > :58:54.was a fine effort by him. A sitting very perilously close to

:58:54. > :59:04.where those shot put were landing. It was a great atmosphere in what

:59:04. > :59:05.

:59:05. > :59:14.was called the market square European bronze medallist last

:59:14. > :59:19.season. 20.31. He actually sat out the second and third rounds,

:59:19. > :59:27.confident in the knowledge that he had qualified for the final. The

:59:27. > :59:32.organisers were after 20.15 in order to qualify for the final.

:59:32. > :59:37.Only the leader achieved that distance. The defending champion,

:59:37. > :59:47.Ralf Bartels, looked a little bit out of sorts. He finished in fifth

:59:47. > :59:58.

:59:58. > :00:04.the men's triple jump qualifying. A favourite event in Sweden, in the

:00:04. > :00:10.field, because of the exploits of Olsson, and Jonathan Edwards, way

:00:10. > :00:18.back in 1995, which seems an age ago. The distance required... Sorry

:00:18. > :00:26.about that, Jonathan! The distance required for the final, 16.90. It

:00:26. > :00:33.was a long time ago! Marian Oprea, one of the best jumpers in the

:00:33. > :00:43.world. Olympics so well -- silver- medallist. He starts as one of the

:00:43. > :00:50.

:00:50. > :00:54.medallist. Not quite as far as the distance which has been set, the

:00:54. > :01:04.qualifying distance. I can't honestly imagine eight jumpers will

:01:04. > :01:24.

:01:24. > :01:30.far. Ruslan Samitov of Russia. 2013

:01:30. > :01:38.Russian indoor champion. He is a 17-metre jumper when he is that his

:01:38. > :01:47.best. Just 21 years old. 4th in the European junior championships some

:01:47. > :01:51.years ago. Not a very tall jumper, but very powerful. That yellow line

:01:51. > :01:56.will have another mine added to it in a while once the competition

:01:56. > :02:06.gets going, to show us how far the top eight have achieved in terms of

:02:06. > :02:16.

:02:16. > :02:26.required but good enough for second place for the time being.

:02:26. > :02:36.STEVE CRAM: Moving to the first heat of the 400m men. This is how

:02:36. > :02:52.

:02:52. > :02:58.be one to watch out for. The Irish are hoping Brian Gregan can bring

:02:58. > :03:01.home the gold in these championships. A good lane draw,

:03:01. > :03:09.not particularly fast out of the blocks. He has been running

:03:09. > :03:16.superbly well. A great new indoor facility in Ireland. A small team,

:03:16. > :03:21.only 11 here. This is the man they hope will do well, look how

:03:21. > :03:29.aggressively he has gone through the first 200 metres. That is quick.

:03:29. > :03:34.Nice and controlled. Right at the back, the Croatian is off the pace.

:03:34. > :03:44.A real scrap going on behind Brian Gregan, he has done well to keep

:03:44. > :03:48.

:03:48. > :03:55.himself out of this. Hanne trying to finish quickly. He is OK. Hanne

:03:55. > :04:02.thought he was not going to be able to. A not very good first 200

:04:02. > :04:11.metres. Ruzic, too late to get into the race for him. A hint of what is

:04:11. > :04:21.to come from Brian Cregan. It will be interesting when they all come

:04:21. > :04:24.

:04:24. > :04:29.together in the semis. COLIN JACKSON: These corners come

:04:29. > :04:34.up very quickly. Hit the front, just run your own

:04:34. > :04:40.steady pace. You can control the race. Brian Gregan is looking

:04:40. > :04:48.around. A bit of acceleration when necessary. A really good, solid

:04:48. > :04:53.performance, the first time I have seen him in the flesh run. A little

:04:53. > :05:03.disappointed, David McCarthy not here. Brian Gregan has been running

:05:03. > :05:05.

:05:05. > :05:12.superbly well. Heading the European rankings this year. We will see

:05:12. > :05:22.Pavel Trenikhin shortly. Richard Strachan and Nigel Levine in the

:05:22. > :05:30.

:05:31. > :05:35.next heat. That is how the first finals tomorrow. They have a chance

:05:35. > :05:45.to rest and recover if they don't get it quite right today.

:05:45. > :05:49.I can see below me the winner of A fine performance to start, of

:05:49. > :05:54.what is it like coming into these chamipionships, people looking at

:05:54. > :06:01.you as a strong medal contender? Any time I race in Ireland, there

:06:01. > :06:05.is a lot of pressure on me to win. It is another race for me. Once I

:06:05. > :06:12.give it my all, that is the main thing for me. Are you pleased with

:06:12. > :06:22.the way you did this? The main thing was to win. I stumbled once

:06:22. > :06:26.

:06:26. > :06:36.or twice, the track is a little bit bubbly. -- bobbly. The first round

:06:36. > :06:48.

:06:49. > :06:55.is hard, you have to get it right, first of three drums to qualify for

:06:55. > :07:05.tomorrow's final. The automatic qualifying line is plain to see at

:07:05. > :07:11.16.90 metres. Federov had promised a lot since he won a world youth of

:07:11. > :07:17.a medal in 2007. He became European junior champion a few years ago. He

:07:17. > :07:27.has all the credentials to become a five triple jumper and do well at

:07:27. > :07:31.

:07:31. > :07:38.senior level. The second longest we anticipate a very strong event for

:07:38. > :07:46.Britain. Yes, it really should be. A false

:07:46. > :07:51.line-up, three guys running, Michael go benumbed, -- Michael

:07:52. > :07:57.Bingham, we need to see him successfully go through here today.

:07:57. > :08:02.Of the three British athletes, Nigel Levine is looking strongest.

:08:02. > :08:06.I would really like to see Nigel take it that one step further and

:08:06. > :08:12.come through in a strong way. Really interesting to see how

:08:12. > :08:17.Michael Bingham gets on hit in lane five. He has a good lane draw,

:08:17. > :08:21.hopefully not getting into any trouble. He hasn't run much but

:08:21. > :08:25.hopefully with his expense he should know what it is about,

:08:25. > :08:31.getting to the 200 metres, controlling it, put himself in

:08:31. > :08:37.position. Not having to get through it as a fastest loser. I agree with

:08:37. > :08:47.Paul Dickenson, it was a long time ago, 1995! Andrew, this is all

:08:47. > :08:52.

:08:52. > :09:01.lane, he will see the back of Pavel Trenikhin, that Russian, very tall,

:09:01. > :09:11.in lane six, the form horse, four times he has won. He wouldn't think,

:09:11. > :09:25.

:09:25. > :09:35.looking at him, very tall and long- allegiances last year to Italy,

:09:35. > :09:54.

:09:54. > :09:58.Just the first two go through automatically, the four fastest.

:09:58. > :10:03.Michael Bingham is up very quickly, already alongside Pavel Trenikhin,

:10:03. > :10:13.they have different game plans. Michael Bingham is flying out.

:10:13. > :10:48.

:10:48. > :10:53.Pavel Trenikhin waiting to get have lost commentary for the time

:10:53. > :10:56.being. Because it is instant at the bell, Denise Lewis, it shows how

:10:56. > :11:01.important it is to beat in the right place at the right time, as

:11:01. > :11:05.Michael Bingham was. Incidences happen, in the men's

:11:05. > :11:13.race, they are fighting. Michael Bingham made sure he was out of

:11:13. > :11:20.danger. The lead was changing a lot. It was really a good, solid run

:11:20. > :11:26.from him. Pavel Trenikhin was on the outside. He saw Michael Bingham

:11:26. > :11:31.go past but he took the view, he knew he was in good shape. Hears

:11:31. > :11:38.the man in form. He has put down the times this season, is strong,

:11:39. > :11:43.tall athlete. Michael Bingham was out fast, he chased the Russian

:11:43. > :11:48.down within the first bend. His plan was very clear. There's no way

:11:48. > :11:52.I am not going to be leading when we get to the 200. Her Michael, we

:11:52. > :11:59.expected him to go out quickly. He needed to command this race. He

:11:59. > :12:03.took charge there. Just making sure he was out of that incident. But,

:12:03. > :12:08.the Russian wasn't having any of it, he decided he would use the

:12:08. > :12:18.momentum created from the turn, into the straight, and took over

:12:18. > :12:19.

:12:19. > :12:29.from Michael Bingham. Chen me kin macro showing he is a force to be

:12:29. > :12:31.

:12:31. > :12:35.Watching yourself on the monitor, what is your verdict? I slowed down

:12:35. > :12:43.a little too much in the middle of the race, try to pace myself. But

:12:43. > :12:53.you cannot do that indoors. No excuses. Chipping up, and let the

:12:53. > :12:54.

:12:54. > :12:59.pack catch me. -- Tripping. You saw all the bumping and barging going

:12:59. > :13:06.on behind you. I am trying to work on this indoors, it is very

:13:06. > :13:10.different. You don't have to switch pace so much. It is really just a

:13:10. > :13:18.progression from outdoors. I am happy to be here representing the

:13:18. > :13:23.team and hopefully you'll see me, and Team GB more often. Brian

:13:23. > :13:30.Gregan said he felt the track was bumpy. Did you find anything

:13:30. > :13:34.similar? No, just running a little bit different. When you come out of

:13:34. > :13:44.the turn, you have to make sure your stride is not so long because

:13:44. > :13:47.

:13:47. > :13:51.you will abruptly hit the straight. the Russian looking very

:13:51. > :14:01.comfortable. Michael Bingham, very comfortably through to the semi-

:14:01. > :14:07.

:14:07. > :14:11.lane five, the same as Michael Bingham, isn't Richard Strachan. A

:14:11. > :14:16.personal best he has run indoors this year. He perhaps didn't look

:14:16. > :14:25.quite as strong as we hoped he would in the Birmingham Grand Prix.

:14:25. > :14:31.Nigel Levine took that race. Maybe it was the big occasion.

:14:31. > :14:35.DENISE LEWIS: He knows he is in shape. Sometimes, you are unsure

:14:35. > :14:39.whether you can step up to the plate. He has a great opportunity

:14:39. > :14:46.at these championships. There is a medal up for grabs for one of these

:14:46. > :14:52.three. He has to be confident, he has to commit. The key is

:14:52. > :15:00.qualification here. He should, hopefully, if he stays out of

:15:00. > :15:05.danger, be in the mix. The recent athletes like this, a medal in a

:15:05. > :15:10.chair bishops can change your mind set. That first medal can elevate

:15:10. > :15:20.you. It confirms in your mind that you are progressing. The worst

:15:20. > :15:33.

:15:33. > :15:37.thing is stagnation. That first ground can meet you very quickly,

:15:37. > :15:41.so you have to make sure your strides are shorter. That

:15:41. > :15:44.frequently takes you into the home straight. These early runs are

:15:44. > :15:51.about getting used to that, reminding the body what you need to

:15:51. > :15:56.do. He needs to work,. What we will probably see again is that he will

:15:56. > :16:00.go out and try to make sure he misses any of that hurly burly that

:16:00. > :16:04.happens when they all converge at the bell. It seems to be the

:16:04. > :16:08.strategy for everybody. It's a sure way of making sure that you are out

:16:08. > :16:13.of danger. The worst thing at this stage is to get tripped up and be

:16:13. > :16:23.out of the competition. We have restored communications to the

:16:23. > :16:31.

:16:31. > :16:35.commentary box, so it's all yours, Richard Strachan is next to go,

:16:35. > :16:39.Michael Bingham safely through. Picking up on what Denise was

:16:39. > :16:43.saying, I was watching Richard last night practising coming off the

:16:43. > :16:47.bend and coming off from lanes 5 and 6. He's obviously intending

:16:47. > :16:57.doing what we all think he should do, which is to get out there and

:16:57. > :17:26.

:17:26. > :17:31.Richard Strachan might be one to watch out for. He was leading and

:17:31. > :17:37.let the guy week saw run not particularly well in the first heat

:17:37. > :17:47.run on the inside. Maybe he will want to take Strachan on in this

:17:47. > :18:19.

:18:19. > :18:22.of the blacks already. Going well in the middle is the Italian.

:18:22. > :18:28.Strachan has got to turn on the burners if he wants to take this

:18:28. > :18:34.lead. Strachan forces his way to the front. A little bit of a nudge

:18:34. > :18:44.their. Strachan is safely out in front. He's got to hold that

:18:44. > :18:50.position. There's a big surge from the Ukrainian. He was pushed. He

:18:50. > :18:55.goes off into lane six. No problem for Strachan, the first two will go

:18:55. > :19:02.through. But the young Frenchman, he's trying to make up some ground

:19:02. > :19:06.by dipping. A solid performance. It was all going on behind him. The

:19:06. > :19:10.young Frenchman was in a terrible position, trying to go through on

:19:10. > :19:14.the inside of the Italian. Decided to give him a bit of a shove, can't

:19:14. > :19:21.really do that. Even if he is good enough to be a fastest loser, I

:19:21. > :19:29.suspect we might see him being disqualified. Gounod's, the

:19:29. > :19:37.Italian... -- who knows, the Italian... It depends what they

:19:37. > :19:41.protest for. The most important thing for us is that Strachan is

:19:41. > :19:45.very successful and dominant in that race. He's always strong and

:19:45. > :19:50.quick, very committed to the early part of the race. He got out

:19:50. > :19:55.quickly on to the Ukrainian athlete's shoulders. You can kind

:19:55. > :19:59.of settle into your rhythm at this stage, still work on the cadence

:19:59. > :20:02.but you are settled. Not being disrespectful to you, Steve, but

:20:02. > :20:06.this place where they do the break, they are running a little bit

:20:06. > :20:16.quicker. You want to stay out of the argy-bargy because it takes a

:20:16. > :20:24.

:20:24. > :20:27.lot of energy. He's checking his have distress himself. He will have

:20:27. > :20:35.noticed that everybody around him is fatiguing. It's about qualifying,

:20:36. > :20:39.winning, making sure you get a The athletes are loving it down

:20:39. > :20:45.here because you are getting a chance to see how you performed.

:20:45. > :20:55.What's your perspective? Hello, mum. To get to the front to control the

:20:55. > :21:01.race. So important over the 200. I backed off a bit around the bend.

:21:01. > :21:05.The Ukrainian was just doing enough. Just about getting to the front and

:21:05. > :21:08.controlling the race. Steve Cram said he'd watch to practising

:21:08. > :21:18.yesterday, getting used to this track. Obviously practice makes

:21:18. > :21:23.perfect. I was down here with Linford and by two training

:21:23. > :21:28.partners. We were all going round trying out different parts of the

:21:28. > :21:31.track. I like it. How much does it help you to be a part of that team,

:21:31. > :21:37.especially with Nigel in the same event as you are here? It helps a

:21:37. > :21:40.lot. Nigel had a lot of questions - are we friends, are we rivals? We

:21:40. > :21:44.are sharing a room out here today. Were having a good time, it's great

:21:44. > :21:50.that so many of us are here. And Conrad Williams, who would have

:21:50. > :22:00.been here in the relay team that had a slight niggle, that's a shame,

:22:00. > :22:01.

:22:01. > :22:05.but the rest of the group is going surprise when Greco finished fourth

:22:05. > :22:15.in the Olympic final last year. He really is a young man with a lot of

:22:15. > :22:22.

:22:22. > :22:25.first round. But limping out, that's a worry. He jumped over 70

:22:25. > :22:31.metres this year for one of the best jumps not only in Europe but

:22:31. > :22:41.the rest of the world as well. I wonder if that's just a touch of

:22:41. > :22:59.

:22:59. > :23:09.too severe. I must admit that limp is a big worry for the Italian.

:23:09. > :23:14.

:23:14. > :23:17.been disqualified. The silly thing there is the Italian, who, if he'd

:23:17. > :23:21.finished, could have been advanced through but he didn't actually

:23:21. > :23:25.finish the race. There was no reason why he shouldn't. He did

:23:25. > :23:29.look like a Premiership footballer going down in the penalty area, but

:23:29. > :23:39.he just stopped. Had he kept going round, his team could have

:23:39. > :23:42.

:23:42. > :23:52.protested that he could have been never serves you well. Nigel Levine

:23:52. > :24:05.

:24:05. > :24:09.is just about ready to go in the outside him. A good marker for him.

:24:09. > :24:14.We were talking about the strength of the women in this team and how

:24:14. > :24:18.that might come together for the relay, but the men's... The teams

:24:18. > :24:24.in some events, the great British team doesn't have any competitors

:24:24. > :24:34.and in some it is reasonably weak. But in the 400 in the men's and

:24:34. > :25:10.

:25:10. > :25:13.the trend will continue, because the tactic seems to be from the

:25:13. > :25:18.British athletes in the 400 is to just get out there and avoid any

:25:18. > :25:28.trouble, but Maslak will be a hard man to get past. He made great

:25:28. > :25:35.

:25:35. > :25:45.progress last year. He still just a indoors and it really does make a

:25:45. > :25:45.

:25:45. > :26:30.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:26:30. > :26:36.difference, on the indoor track it Maslak is out in front. Easy style

:26:36. > :26:44.round the back straight. This young man from the Czech Republic is

:26:44. > :26:53.followed closely by Levine. Maslak having a look around. The been

:26:53. > :27:03.trying to put the pressure on. -- Levine. We expected those two to

:27:03. > :27:13.

:27:13. > :27:16.behind the two athletes to come through to take the first and

:27:16. > :27:25.second spot. Everybody keeps checking their positions, wondering

:27:25. > :27:32.where they are. Nigel de be in deep to see if he could -- Nigel Duckett

:27:33. > :27:36.in deep to see if he could check on where he was. Lane five, good,

:27:36. > :27:46.strong lane draw. It allows him to focus on the main man in front of

:27:46. > :28:00.

:28:00. > :28:03.happens inside. He has to cut a keep the timing. Don't want to use

:28:03. > :28:07.too much energy in these early rounds unless you really have to.

:28:07. > :28:12.You can see as it comes of this term, he thinks, should I have a

:28:12. > :28:17.bit of a goat to see if he's got a response? He digs in, Maslak sees

:28:17. > :28:23.him do that and put us on a bit more to maintain his position.

:28:23. > :28:30.done so far for the three British athletes. Maslak looking very

:28:30. > :28:36.comfortable there. The man in Up against one of your likely

:28:36. > :28:44.rivals this weekend for the Overall title, how was that? It was all

:28:44. > :28:49.right. I tried to win my heat but he's quite a strong guy. I've got

:28:49. > :28:53.to pick him up, respect to him. It's the European Championships,

:28:53. > :28:57.it's not going to be easy, we've got to work for it. The first round

:28:57. > :29:02.is out of the way. The next round, go back and talk to my coach and

:29:02. > :29:05.then go on from there for tomorrow. We spoke to Brian Gregan earlier on

:29:05. > :29:10.and he said the first round is always the hardest one to get your

:29:10. > :29:19.head around, it's a relief to get it out of the way - is that how you

:29:19. > :29:22.feel? Yes. If you can't run good in the first round, you are in trouble

:29:22. > :29:28.in the second. The been running well all season and have brought a

:29:28. > :29:38.great deal of confidence in. I've got a bit of confidence but that

:29:38. > :29:51.

:29:51. > :29:57.got knocked a little. Let's bring Maslak. All three British athletes

:29:57. > :30:07.are safely through. Just to confirm the final line up

:30:07. > :30:31.

:30:31. > :30:41.British athletes. -- two big in the pentathlon, now. Nadine

:30:41. > :30:43.

:30:43. > :30:48.Broersen, 1.78. That is worth 953 points. Not the most accomplished

:30:48. > :30:58.high jump but in terms of technique. But, certainly, a very solid

:30:58. > :31:10.

:31:10. > :31:15.performer. First-time clearances clearance, again. Hannah

:31:15. > :31:25.Melnychenko looking very solid indeed. She has had first time to

:31:25. > :31:29.

:31:29. > :31:34.ounces ever since 1.69 metres. -- first-time clearances.

:31:34. > :31:41.Sofia Linde, a favourite here in Gothenburg. She did very well in

:31:41. > :31:51.the hurdles earlier today. That, I think, equals her lifetime best

:31:51. > :32:01.

:32:01. > :32:06.the hurdles. In a little bit of trouble here. That is unusual. That

:32:06. > :32:11.she should be suffering at this height in the high jump. She has

:32:11. > :32:21.not got it. That could put his huge dent in her respirations to lift

:32:21. > :32:24.his gold medal and defend her title successfully. -- aspirations. She

:32:24. > :32:31.looked great in the hurdles, and earlier in the high jump, but it

:32:31. > :32:36.has all gone wrong. A relatively modest height.

:32:36. > :32:46.Let us look back at those 400m heats. Relatively comfortable for

:32:46. > :32:50.These early mornings are not easy. They clearly or had a strategy, and

:32:50. > :32:53.they executed it really well. It is nice to see that they are getting

:32:53. > :33:02.used to being in this arena, delivering on the expectations we

:33:02. > :33:11.have of them. Nigel Levine, do you think he was tried to make a point,

:33:11. > :33:16.in the home straight. -- trying. has seen how his mother team mates

:33:16. > :33:22.have run, he wanted to lead, but Pavel Maslak was strong, he looked

:33:22. > :33:26.really good. Nigel Levine had to concede and change his strategy and

:33:26. > :33:30.Coast and make sure he qualified comfortably. The scale of the

:33:30. > :33:35.challenge should not be underestimated. Brian Gregan is

:33:35. > :33:40.ranked number one in Europe. Pavel Maslak as well. It is tough to get

:33:40. > :33:46.onto the podium. It is. We talked about the opportunity to come away

:33:46. > :33:50.with a medal. No championships are easy. They have got the speed in

:33:50. > :33:55.their legs, they have to find another gear. We have a couple more

:33:55. > :34:05.races coming up, the men's 3,000 metres qualification. We are back

:34:05. > :34:21.

:34:21. > :34:27.A lot of questions, I think, with Dwain Chambers. He struggled in

:34:27. > :34:32.Birmingham. He had run well earlier in Glasgow. He has injuries. He has

:34:32. > :34:37.got injured. His indoor performance should speak volumes. He has been

:34:37. > :34:43.very successful at wild and European indoors. Therefore, you

:34:43. > :34:53.cannot rule him out. He will have to come here and prove it tonight.

:34:53. > :34:56.

:34:56. > :35:06.We also have Holly Bleasdale, men's 3,000 metres heats.

:35:06. > :35:21.

:35:21. > :35:31.It is round one. The final takes this heat, Ingebrigtsen, the 1,500m

:35:31. > :35:34.

:35:34. > :35:44.champion. And Arikan, he now races for Turkey, he used to race for

:35:44. > :35:57.

:35:57. > :36:07.the European Championships last year, in the 1,500m. A glimpse,

:36:07. > :36:10.

:36:10. > :36:19.Ingebrigtsen. We are ready for 15 fastest losers go through to the

:36:19. > :36:27.final. Arikan, easing his way through on the outside. Florian

:36:27. > :36:32.Carvalho takes them out. Pace is important in this. If it is a bit

:36:32. > :36:40.slow, others who are concerned they might be a fastest loser might pick

:36:41. > :36:50.things up. At the moment, dawdling around.

:36:51. > :36:55.

:36:55. > :37:05.Paul lump capitals macro -- PAULA RADCLIFFE: they need to keep up the

:37:05. > :37:17.

:37:17. > :37:27.Stephen Scullion. Also, boiling macro. Olionaird, in 4th place at

:37:27. > :37:49.

:37:49. > :37:59.a training, then moved down to train with Mark Rowland.

:37:59. > :38:00.

:38:00. > :38:06.Arikan is in front. Ingebrigtsen. Just in front of Olionaird. The

:38:06. > :38:10.pace at the moment, it has picked up a little bit. By no means the

:38:10. > :38:14.quickest 3,000 metres race. I do not think we are going to see

:38:14. > :38:19.super quick times here. Will probably see them dawdle around,

:38:20. > :38:24.then decide to do something over the closing laps. Maybe a bit

:38:24. > :38:32.quicker in the second heat if somebody decides to make the pace

:38:33. > :38:42.more decent from the start. A lot of people will be put in all their

:38:43. > :39:03.

:39:03. > :39:10.position to make it through to tomorrow's final. He certainly is a

:39:10. > :39:16.very competent jump her. And, that looks much better. You can see the

:39:16. > :39:21.line there, where the top eight jumpers have jumped further than.

:39:21. > :39:26.An orange qualifying line and a green in 8th place line. He has

:39:26. > :39:31.suddenly gone in excess of that. It is still Daniele Greco, the young

:39:31. > :39:37.Italian, who is way ahead of everybody here. But, that is good,

:39:37. > :39:43.nice rhythm, good speed as well. He still may need a little bit more,

:39:43. > :39:53.depending on how everybody else goes in this qualifier. It is an

:39:53. > :40:00.

:40:00. > :40:10.Rocking and rolling, just a little, on the runway. A slightly different

:40:10. > :40:10.

:40:10. > :40:18.style but the result is good. A very powerful jumper, and

:40:18. > :40:21.incredibly strong man end of the weights room. A good take-off. He

:40:21. > :40:31.pounds down the runway, that is very close to the automatic

:40:31. > :40:38.

:40:38. > :40:47.qualifier. Second longest we have man do much here today. Harold

:40:47. > :40:53.Correa, 15. 71 in the first round. That is better, much, much better

:40:53. > :41:00.by Harold Correa. He certainly has jumped into contention with that

:41:00. > :41:03.second round jump. An abortive attempt in the first round, where

:41:03. > :41:08.he almost bailed out of the job halfway down, he knew it wasn't

:41:08. > :41:14.quite right. Losing a bit on the board which I am sure he will

:41:14. > :41:21.correct as the final progress has tomorrow. But, that is a super jump.

:41:21. > :41:31.Still waiting for the distance, we have seen it. 16. 76. A good effort,

:41:31. > :41:46.

:41:46. > :41:56.macro. Four will go through automatically. And the four fastest

:41:56. > :42:03.

:42:03. > :42:10.close attendance, Ingebrigtsen. Florian Carvalho is there as well.

:42:10. > :42:16.Again, the pace is quickening, as it has to. You can see a bunch,

:42:16. > :42:20.with three and a half laps remaining. Stephen Scullion, the

:42:20. > :42:25.Northern Irish champion, looking to make sure of his place here in the

:42:25. > :42:35.final. Stephen Scullion is not the fastest

:42:35. > :42:37.

:42:37. > :42:42.finisher. Deciding now he needs to pick it up.

:42:42. > :42:50.Stephen Scullion may start to feel the pain out but he has done his

:42:50. > :43:00.bit to try as the fastest loser. On the outside, Florian Carvalho.

:43:00. > :43:12.

:43:12. > :43:22.Arikan is thereabouts all the time. Mo Farah, in Birmingham. In a good

:43:30. > :43:36.Olionaird, outside Florian Carvalho. Ingebrigtsen close behind. Bouafif

:43:36. > :43:42.in 5th place. 200 metres to go. Olionaird looking good for Ireland.

:43:42. > :43:48.Stephen Scullion has faded. On the outside, Florian Carvalho looking

:43:48. > :43:58.strong. A huge improvement by it boiling macro, reaching the World

:43:58. > :44:08.Championships final in the -- Olionaird. 1,500 Ingebrigtsen

:44:08. > :44:19.

:44:19. > :44:23.well. Coming through strongly at the end. He looked very much in

:44:23. > :44:30.control and fresh. Easing down, plenty of time to look around, he

:44:30. > :44:40.did all of the running in the 200 metres running up to that.

:44:40. > :45:05.

:45:05. > :45:10.Very impressive from the Irishman, he decided to accelerate. You can

:45:10. > :45:20.really see the difference between the 1500m specialist and the speed

:45:20. > :45:33.

:45:33. > :45:42.that he has. He doesn't have that You looked so in control, round it

:45:42. > :45:46.like you wanted to? My coach told me to relax, don't do anything

:45:46. > :45:51.until the last kilometre. I was a little rusty but I'm glad to have

:45:51. > :45:55.that one out of the way now. Impressive performance. It's a

:45:55. > :46:03.small Irish team but it's lean and mean and you've got some strong

:46:03. > :46:07.medal contenders, you included. I'm leading the rankings in the 15,

:46:08. > :46:13.these tactical races, my speed is an advantage. Brian Gregan has a

:46:13. > :46:23.real chance of a medal. We are just having fun, it's the most relaxed

:46:23. > :46:49.

:46:49. > :46:59.camp I've ever been in. It showed this pentathlon high-jump

:46:59. > :46:59.

:46:59. > :48:22.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:48:22. > :48:32.silver IND with gold medal this year. Halil Akkas took the bronze

:48:32. > :49:08.

:49:08. > :49:16.Halil Akkas getting himself the back. Higuero, this 3000m

:49:16. > :49:25.indoors always brings that really nice mix of the have 1500m men with

:49:25. > :49:32.the endorsement. It tends to favour the 1500m men. The French have

:49:32. > :49:42.targeted the middle distance events this year. We will see Mekhissi-

:49:42. > :49:57.

:49:57. > :50:01.team here. At the moment it is the Italian who has gone to the front,

:50:01. > :50:10.trying to keep a decent pace going and controlling the race of it from

:50:10. > :50:20.there. If you want to run close to eight minutes, about 64 second laps.

:50:20. > :50:22.

:50:22. > :50:26.If you are outside... It looks to me as if it has slowed somewhat.

:50:26. > :50:31.It's something you've got to be aware of. You run a three or four

:50:31. > :50:34.laps and it's hard to get back. Some of these guys, they are not in

:50:35. > :50:40.the Mo Farah League where they can pick up five seconds easily over

:50:40. > :50:45.the last 800m. You want to keep it a steady, even pace. Maybe for that

:50:45. > :50:51.reason, traverse of Ireland sensing it has slowed and just moving it on

:50:51. > :50:56.a little. We need is low it is a much more dangerous situation, far

:50:56. > :51:06.greater chance of being tripped and catching someone's heel. Little

:51:06. > :51:10.

:51:10. > :51:17.accidents you don't want to happen John Travers, just 21 and coming

:51:17. > :51:27.into this, gaining experience, but he's also coming in as the Irish

:51:27. > :51:30.

:51:30. > :51:34.University's 1500m champion. Higuero chose this event and ran 26

:51:34. > :51:41.seconds for the last 200m to win. That's the sort of race he would

:51:42. > :51:47.like. A slow run race. He's the second of the Spaniards in this.

:51:47. > :51:52.Roberto Alaiz is in third place at the moment. But he still got lots

:51:52. > :51:58.of pace to burn. He will be hoping that it only be heats but the final

:51:58. > :52:08.are more tactical race. John Travers has picked up the pace a

:52:08. > :52:27.

:52:27. > :52:30.has gone up to 1.90. Maksimava was down in 10th place after the

:52:30. > :52:40.hurdles. If she got this, she'd make a huge advance up the

:52:40. > :52:45.

:52:45. > :52:55.battle but the bar stays on. That is a wonderful achievement for the

:52:55. > :52:55.

:52:55. > :54:01.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 54 seconds

:54:01. > :54:05.indoors and out. That is better, It was a steady enough pace that

:54:05. > :54:12.had been set but the man who for many is the favourite, he's run

:54:12. > :54:22.some good, fast times this year, but be always lacks that there will

:54:22. > :54:25.

:54:25. > :54:29.wants to show he's got the class, he can run fast times. The likes to

:54:29. > :54:34.stretch his legs a little bit. can be a bit harder to jog around

:54:34. > :54:43.and then have a huge injection of pace. Maybe he wants to run out to

:54:43. > :54:47.test himself a little bit ahead of the final. Kowal doesn't seem to

:54:47. > :54:53.want to go out on his own to close that gap. He's really concentrating

:54:53. > :54:57.on keeping his position in that top four. He's thrown in a couple of

:54:57. > :55:01.fast laps. The danger you have if you are Kowal and you are at the

:55:01. > :55:05.back, you make the big move, you've got to make even more effort to go

:55:05. > :55:14.with this. He's obviously decided he doesn't want to make that effort.

:55:15. > :55:21.He's got enough pace that he'd hope... Now he's got to contend

:55:21. > :55:25.with Halil Akkas. That little group, the other ones will contend second,

:55:25. > :55:35.third and fourth, try and make sure they get through. It essence, it's

:55:35. > :55:39.

:55:39. > :55:44.become two races. Abraham have a -- they are bracing for the three fast

:55:44. > :55:48.as places to qualify. Higuero just ahead of his team-mate in third

:55:49. > :55:52.place. Looking threatening. No doubt about the leader. I'm

:55:52. > :55:59.surprised he's going quite so hard as this. I think this will be a

:55:59. > :56:03.dress rehearsal for the final. I think Ibrahimov will be trying to

:56:03. > :56:09.run the legs of the men in this. Eakin eased through the last lap,

:56:09. > :56:19.he will hear the bell this time. Ibrahimov has won more glance over

:56:19. > :56:20.

:56:20. > :56:30.his shoulder. There are four men for three places behind him. Kowal

:56:30. > :56:39.

:56:39. > :56:44.looking over his shoulder. A fairly swift 7.50 for qualification. Kowal

:56:44. > :56:54.is checking behind him. It will be the two Spaniards who will join

:56:54. > :56:54.

:56:54. > :56:59.Kowal. Higuero doing enough. Ibrahimov shaking his legs. I

:56:59. > :57:05.suspect he is in the sort of shape where he will think, I can run

:57:05. > :57:08.close to 7.40, I might get away from every point -- everyone come

:57:08. > :57:12.the final. The is worked hard in that race and has stretched himself

:57:12. > :57:22.a little bit, but by no means as the taking himself into any kind of

:57:22. > :57:30.

:57:30. > :57:35.deficit. I think he will recover From a British point of view, it's

:57:35. > :57:40.pretty solid. Shara Proctor in the women's long jump qualification.

:57:40. > :57:43.She qualified comfortably with 6.61. She was very composed, her

:57:43. > :57:48.interview was excellent. I think she's got expectations of doing

:57:49. > :57:53.well in the final, but she played a really cool and that bodes well.

:57:53. > :57:58.Then we saw that two 400 because qualifications, men's and women's.

:57:58. > :58:03.All six got through. So times we have a few surprises. One we have a

:58:03. > :58:08.full quota of participants in the 400 beaters. No surprises, they did

:58:08. > :58:12.exactly what we expected them to do. It was be tough because be sold

:58:12. > :58:17.three very good athletes who have a good chance of being on the podium.

:58:17. > :58:27.Yes, they've got to work for this in the next round. The lane draws
