:00:12. > :00:18.Welcome to Gothenburg in Sweden, a city with a sporting past to be
:00:18. > :00:22.proud of. Back in 1958, it was up one of the host venues for the
:00:22. > :00:29.football World Cup and the European Championships in 1992. Figure-
:00:29. > :00:31.skating gold medals have been won here and stays but the world and
:00:31. > :00:35.the European Athletics Championships and we are back again,
:00:35. > :00:37.this time of the 32nd European Indoor Championships, an event
:00:37. > :00:43.which has always gone well for the British teams.
:00:43. > :00:48.COMMENTATOR: Coming away and looking full of fight. Linford
:00:48. > :00:55.Christie takes the gold! Another 20 metres throw for Geoff
:00:55. > :01:00.Capes. John Regis will get gold. And it is a new world indoor
:01:00. > :01:09.record! Helen Clitheroe against the gold! De Jason Gardener is the
:01:09. > :01:12.champion. It is called for Mo Farah. -- gold 4 Mo Farah.
:01:12. > :01:18.So we are all set for the next chapter in these championships.
:01:18. > :01:23.Gothenburg looking great in the sunshine but already chilly,
:01:23. > :01:27.hosting the European Indoor Championships in 1984 and 1954,
:01:27. > :01:34.with Christian also and the triple jumper hailing from the City, this
:01:34. > :01:41.is a place with athletics in its blood. So welcome back to the
:01:41. > :01:46.Scandinavium Arena. Robin Cousins won his medal here, the ice rink is
:01:46. > :01:52.another track. The British team has been on song.
:01:52. > :01:59.The quickest we have seen from join chambers for I don't know how long
:01:59. > :02:07.-- Dwain Chambers. Holly Bleasdale sales over this time. Jenny Meadows
:02:07. > :02:16.will win this one. It is bronze for Britain and Robbie Grabarz. It will
:02:16. > :02:20.be a fight to the line here. Lots of big British names out this
:02:20. > :02:24.afternoon, none more so than Dwain Chambers who goes in the heat of
:02:24. > :02:32.the men's 60m, Jenny Meadows captaining the team, she is in the
:02:32. > :02:37.women's 800m heats, semi-finals of the men's and women's 60m with
:02:37. > :02:44.strong British representation. Laura Muir and then the finals of
:02:44. > :02:47.the 60m hurdles towards the end of the programme. In the field, Holly
:02:47. > :02:51.Bleasdale, Robbie Grabarz, the Olympic bronze medallist and Yamile
:02:51. > :02:57.Aldama goes in the triple jump qualification. A couple of
:02:57. > :03:06.superstars in the studio as well. Denise and Paula. Les hear from
:03:06. > :03:10.deke mind at the new -- let's hear from the man at the top, Peter
:03:10. > :03:14.Eriksson, taking over from Charles van Commenee.
:03:14. > :03:18.Peter, it seems fitting, the head coach of UK Athletics in your home
:03:18. > :03:24.country of Sweden for your first maiden championship. How does it
:03:24. > :03:28.feel? It is great. I have not been home for many years. It is great to
:03:28. > :03:33.come home and be the first championship, this is what to look
:03:33. > :03:37.forward to, to be at the big event. I think we have a great team to do
:03:37. > :03:41.well. You have gone for a team which has got people in their, top
:03:41. > :03:51.six potential right across the board. Is that fair to say? Your
:03:51. > :03:52.
:03:52. > :03:59.eyes, UK Sport and the lottery funding is investing in sport. A
:03:59. > :04:04.young team, average age of 22 years. A good team and good coaching staff
:04:04. > :04:08.and support staff so I am really positive. A lot of pressure coming
:04:08. > :04:12.on to the team and we have so many youngsters but I do not see that as
:04:12. > :04:18.a stumbling Stone for doing well. You can hope for a certain amount
:04:18. > :04:24.of medals but I don't even go that way, by just try to get the best
:04:24. > :04:29.out of the Bartlett. And that is what we will value. You had
:04:29. > :04:34.fantastic success with the Great Britain Paralympics team, and a
:04:34. > :04:39.Cockcroft says he is our friend as well as our coach but he knows when
:04:39. > :04:47.to be scary as well! That sounds like a winning formula. I can be
:04:47. > :04:51.tough when it needs to be tough. Otherwise you would be
:04:52. > :04:59.steamrollered all the time. And too scared!
:04:59. > :05:04.New head coach and new glasses, different from his other classes.
:05:04. > :05:11.He is very different in demeanour from Charles van Commenee. Yes, a
:05:11. > :05:14.very warm and friendly man. They have had quite a strict regime
:05:14. > :05:18.under Charles van Commenee. Both men have very different approaches
:05:18. > :05:25.but very different pressures. Charles was focused on the Olympic
:05:25. > :05:28.success, the team had to do well so he had to be tough from the outset
:05:29. > :05:34.so Eriksson, it is about making unity and addressing some of the
:05:34. > :05:38.issues that were underlying, behind the scenes, behind the scenes with
:05:38. > :05:43.the coaches and management and he had stride to Smith that as well as
:05:43. > :05:46.bring up the best in the athlete. And the Paralympic athletes, they
:05:46. > :05:54.had a very bad athletics competition in Beijing but he
:05:54. > :06:01.turned it around for London. He s and made it one big family -- yes,
:06:01. > :06:06.and made one big family. I think he is bringing people to have more
:06:06. > :06:09.unity here and at the end of the day, an athlete wants to go out and
:06:09. > :06:14.perform, they do not need to be bullied, they know what they need
:06:14. > :06:19.to do. I would liked you have seen him give a few more people a chance
:06:19. > :06:23.here, to go out and learn and grow. Although he is a new head coach, he
:06:23. > :06:27.is still part of a system which is very much focused on the top end.
:06:27. > :06:31.Not so much on letting athletes come and learn from the experience
:06:31. > :06:35.of getting to a championships. is what we are witnessing here. It
:06:35. > :06:39.would have been nice to fill some of the gaps. Not just let athletes
:06:39. > :06:45.come for the sake of it but athletes and athletics are learning
:06:45. > :06:49.processes. It is something you learn, you have to craft. It is a
:06:49. > :06:52.daunting place out there for a youngster and unless you have the
:06:52. > :06:57.opportunity to manage yourself in that environment, you will never
:06:57. > :07:05.learn. You were particular critical, Paula, perhaps slightly indiscreet
:07:05. > :07:09.tweets! "completely ridiculous", the selection? A little bit
:07:09. > :07:13.ridiculous! I just felt this was the perfect opportunity to give
:07:13. > :07:17.young guys like Chris Robertson, the chance to come here and see
:07:17. > :07:25.what they could do but you talk about during people at the deep end.
:07:25. > :07:29.Hands and -- and sometimes you have to take that chance. In the
:07:29. > :07:33.distance events, David Sharpe winning, look at that. He may have
:07:33. > :07:38.not been on that team today but he was able to capitalise on things
:07:38. > :07:42.like that. Especially events like the women's 800, you have got the
:07:42. > :07:48.top 10 in the world and only one is here. I am hoping that Steve Cram
:07:48. > :07:52.and Colin Jackson in the commentary box, we have got the camera
:07:52. > :07:56.pointing at them. A bit of context for this championship. Straight
:07:56. > :08:01.after the Olympic Games, what should we be expecting? We were
:08:01. > :08:05.discussing earlier on today, a bit of a mixed bag today. Post Olympics,
:08:05. > :08:11.lots of big names. A fair share of our big names who are not here,
:08:11. > :08:18.they are taking time to recover and they want to ease himself back in.
:08:18. > :08:26.It is not only the Brit doing that a. -- not only the Brits doing that.
:08:26. > :08:32.You get some new faces and some stars and the youngsters as Paula
:08:33. > :08:36.was talking about, top level of competition experience. It is a
:08:36. > :08:44.good competition where, if you think back to Paris, Helen
:08:44. > :08:46.Clitheroe winning and Jodie Williams winning. I agree, but also
:08:46. > :08:51.you need to come to the championships with that the real
:08:51. > :08:55.reasons to come. If you want to perform well, you have to do so.
:08:55. > :09:00.When the athletes set themselves a target to perform, they still have
:09:00. > :09:06.to deliver. He has gone by, they did not have world juniors, under
:09:06. > :09:11.23 championships, lot of athletes would come to these events -- in in
:09:11. > :09:17.years gone by. It is not needed as much now. I think expectations
:09:17. > :09:21.should be quite strong on them. Steve and Colin, your thoughts of
:09:21. > :09:26.Peter Eriksson as the new head coach. Probably quite a different
:09:26. > :09:32.approach to what Charles created. Yes, while you were talking about
:09:32. > :09:36.it, Colin and I were chatting. I am not sure, but I think we overplay
:09:36. > :09:40.this. Peter is the head coach because his job is to ensure -
:09:40. > :09:47.particularly the coaches below him and working in a world-class
:09:47. > :09:51.programme and working with the coaches - that everybody is doing
:09:51. > :09:54.their job well when they come here. If they are doing their job well,
:09:54. > :09:59.that creates a great environment for the athlete. Peter Cook will
:09:59. > :10:09.only meet the athletes every now and then. He does not night --
:10:09. > :10:11.
:10:11. > :10:14.Peter will only meet. Charles had his way of doing things and Peter
:10:14. > :10:18.will have his own worth. He can't always affect how an athlete will
:10:18. > :10:21.perform, that is how well they have trained, they must work with their
:10:21. > :10:26.coaches and hopefully they arrive in good shape and ready to do well
:10:26. > :10:30.and Peter's job is to create the right environment. His language is
:10:30. > :10:39.a bit different, talking about them doing their best and Charles might
:10:39. > :10:44.have said that he would not accept second best, a different tone
:10:44. > :10:49.almost. I do not think any athlete comes to a championship to please a
:10:49. > :10:52.head coach. I don't think any athlete to be coming to an event to
:10:52. > :10:57.please Peter Eriksson or Charles van Commenee, they should becoming
:10:57. > :11:01.here to do the best they can. They will have their own expectations.
:11:01. > :11:07.We must recognise that. A collective environment, it is
:11:07. > :11:12.important to set the framework to allow athletes to compete at their
:11:12. > :11:16.best. Of course there will have targets, no sport comes to this and
:11:16. > :11:20.does not think it will matter to win medals, that would be nonsense
:11:20. > :11:24.but he is correct to say that he wants people to come to perform to
:11:24. > :11:26.the best of their ability. You do not what people going home thinking
:11:26. > :11:34.they could not perform well because of something the team had done, he
:11:34. > :11:37.must make sure that is the case. You are spot on there, Steve. I
:11:38. > :11:40.think he wants to create a warm atmosphere where athletes may be
:11:40. > :11:44.struggling and they would like to talk to him about something.
:11:44. > :11:49.Sometimes you can feel that. Sometimes people could feel they
:11:49. > :11:52.would not be able to dare to talk to Charles. Yes, a different
:11:52. > :11:57.environment but his job is to look after the coaching side and the
:11:57. > :12:01.medical side and everything else. Let me bring you in, Denise. You
:12:02. > :12:07.reacted to what Steve Cram said, people reacting to what Charles
:12:07. > :12:11.wanted. I think it is taking responsibility and ownership of how
:12:11. > :12:15.you go about your business so I think from what I can gather from
:12:15. > :12:21.what I have seen and heard about Charles, it was about what you did
:12:21. > :12:24.in the everyday and preparation to the championships. Not necessarily
:12:24. > :12:29.about what you did here, although that was important, but the
:12:29. > :12:35.decisions you make a bad way you train, the you train with and your
:12:35. > :12:39.training programme. -- the decisions about the way you train.
:12:39. > :12:45.Some people needed more guidance in that than others. The bits Charles
:12:45. > :12:48.perhaps become too big a personality -- did Charles?
:12:48. > :12:53.they are very different people but like Denise says, athletes are
:12:53. > :12:56.different people. Some athletes do not need any pushing in training
:12:56. > :13:01.and build up and preparation and certainly in racing, there are
:13:01. > :13:04.always trying to get the best out of themselves. Others may be less
:13:04. > :13:09.professional in that built up and need the guidance. Sometimes it is
:13:09. > :13:15.not always the younger athletes, sometimes it is the athletes who do
:13:15. > :13:18.not have that innate perspective and focus and a thick Charles did
:13:19. > :13:23.something to put people into that a bit more than somebody who needs
:13:23. > :13:27.that guidance may struggle a bit more under Peter but somebody who
:13:27. > :13:33.is well able to push themselves and focus themselves will flourish and
:13:33. > :13:40.perform well. No medal predictions from year but our pundits, Where
:13:40. > :13:45.Angels fear to tread! This is what they think will happen. A divide
:13:45. > :13:51.studio and it, too, Steve Cram and Colin Jackson are going
:13:51. > :13:55.conservatively but four at the front from Denise and Paula with 12
:13:56. > :14:01.and nine medals. Five gold medals, for Denise. Name them. I am a
:14:01. > :14:07.feeling optimistic. Looking at the men's and the women's 4x400. If we
:14:07. > :14:11.do not get golds. Then you add Robbie Grabarz and the high jump, I
:14:11. > :14:15.am hoping that Holly Bleasdale can do the business in the pole vault
:14:15. > :14:21.and then we have got Helen Clitheroe moment where an
:14:21. > :14:26.unexpected person who goes beyond what we think is possible. The is
:14:26. > :14:36.that five? That is five! And what is your prediction for gold
:14:36. > :14:39.
:14:39. > :14:45.Plummer? We hope that Holly Bleasdale is OK, she sprayed hair
:14:45. > :14:50.spray on her I it and she was using hair straighteners, I do not know
:14:50. > :14:56.why she needed then. You have gone for 12. Let's go to the commentary
:14:56. > :15:01.box and the wise heads not going for too many medals. I have got no
:15:01. > :15:09.hair spray on, unlike Holly! But I did injure my finger.
:15:09. > :15:14.I feel like I am tight compared to everybody, I am right at the bottom
:15:14. > :15:18.of the list but I am playing it safe but I think there's a lot of
:15:18. > :15:23.athletes who can raise their Games. From all parts of the world. We
:15:23. > :15:27.must be realistic. I still give us three gold medals which is not bad.
:15:27. > :15:31.Only fools make predictions about something they cannot influence. We
:15:31. > :15:36.have been asked to do that! Like everybody else, we do not know, and
:15:36. > :15:41.we are hoping that we do very well. I think we will, I have gone for
:15:41. > :15:44.night like Colin, I think the 400 individual metres and the 4x400 are
:15:44. > :15:48.our best chances but the French came here with high hopes and they
:15:48. > :15:52.have had two people go out with false starts and all sorts of
:15:53. > :15:57.things can happen. I think 8, 9, 10 would be a good return. We will
:15:57. > :16:02.keep track of those predictions with great interest and told the
:16:02. > :16:12.guys to them. The men's 60m heat coming up. We have not failed to
:16:12. > :16:31.
:16:31. > :16:35.brilliant run. Linford Christie is storming through. He takes the gold.
:16:35. > :16:45.He takes it from a standing start. It was an appalling start and he
:16:45. > :16:49.
:16:49. > :16:57.still won. It is Livingston. It is very, very close. He is the
:16:57. > :17:07.European a number one. Jackson Quinonez got away very well indeed.
:17:07. > :17:08.
:17:08. > :17:18.A brilliant run. Stumbled a bit at the moment. He is going well.
:17:18. > :17:20.
:17:20. > :17:30.Through the middle. Jason Gardener is the European champion. Jason
:17:30. > :17:30.
:17:30. > :17:37.Gardener got away well. He is the champion again. Absolutely superb.
:17:37. > :17:47.6.56. That was a terrific run. Chambers gets his very good start
:17:47. > :17:54.
:17:54. > :18:00.as usual. He will win. He has got Dwain Chambers was very quick in
:18:00. > :18:04.2009. Let us hear from him. I know you have had so many successes
:18:04. > :18:09.indoors before. When it comes to the Championship like this, how
:18:09. > :18:14.much do you tap into those memories to inspire you? I have noticed it
:18:14. > :18:20.is getting harder and harder. Young men are getting faster and faster.
:18:20. > :18:24.I have started to realise I have got to rely on my experience. I
:18:24. > :18:29.still have the ability but experience pays a lot. I have to
:18:29. > :18:37.use it in the Championships. You are the man. Everybody is trying to
:18:37. > :18:44.beat you. You have the record that is answer past. It is a question of
:18:44. > :18:50.how long you can keep it going. Physically, I still have the
:18:50. > :18:54.ability to go out and perform. I try and remember -- I try and stay
:18:54. > :18:59.one step ahead of everybody. I still love what I do. That is the
:18:59. > :19:05.main thing. Whatever you do in life, do it with love and care. You can
:19:05. > :19:10.go as long as you want. If you look at Hollywood, Bruce Willis and so
:19:10. > :19:20.on, they are still making movies in their 60s. It shows, age is nothing
:19:20. > :19:24.
:19:24. > :19:29.but a number. If you still enjoy what you do, anything is possible.
:19:29. > :19:35.After Birmingham, a bit surprised when he did not make the final. I
:19:35. > :19:41.am surprised to see him here. are talking about European indoors,
:19:42. > :19:46.if anyone can mix it up it is Dwane. He has a great track record. It is
:19:46. > :19:54.about how fit he is. If he is putting himself on the line, I
:19:54. > :19:59.expected to do well. He seems a more relaxed athlete after 2012. He
:19:59. > :20:03.has some sense of personal redemption. He has. He has got
:20:03. > :20:08.perspective as well. At the end of the day, he is doing something he
:20:08. > :20:13.enjoys. He thinks he can still perform at it. He would not be here
:20:13. > :20:23.if he did not think he could go out to perform. Dwain Chambers goes in
:20:23. > :20:35.
:20:35. > :20:45.heat two. It is the two wise men in Harry Aikines-Aryeetey first. Only
:20:45. > :20:49.
:20:49. > :20:52.three heats in this round. The first format will go through. --
:20:52. > :21:00.format. Although it for a map fastest losers will join them.
:21:00. > :21:10.There will be 16 in the final. -- the four fastest losers will join
:21:10. > :21:16.
:21:16. > :21:26.them. This young man has been in great form. European junior
:21:26. > :21:27.
:21:27. > :21:30.champion. Harry Aikines-Aryeetey has been through the World Junior
:21:30. > :21:39.Championships. Not quite able to convert all of that talent as a
:21:39. > :21:46.senior. He is the same age as Julian Reus. Harry needs to be
:21:46. > :21:56.careful. He is capable of finishing in the top four. Anything slightly
:21:56. > :22:05.
:22:05. > :22:15.off, as happens in the 60m, you can be disappointed. To put it mildly.
:22:15. > :22:54.
:22:54. > :22:58.This young man has been making all kinds of headlines at home. They
:22:58. > :23:03.are getting excited about his prospects. He twitched a bit in the
:23:03. > :23:13.blocks before he went away. Harry was not so quick. He ran a good
:23:13. > :23:13.
:23:13. > :23:16.second half. The surprise, was the Romanian. It was quite an even race.
:23:16. > :23:22.You would expect that. No-one is outstanding this season. The German
:23:22. > :23:32.is very smooth and fluid. This is something we have to look out for,
:23:32. > :23:33.
:23:33. > :23:37.the surprises. There is the German. He has done well. 6.56. As a
:23:37. > :23:41.sprinter, he has everything you want. He is not under stress,
:23:41. > :23:45.working his way to the line. He knows everyone is around him. He
:23:45. > :23:51.looks calm and comfortable. A good performance. Let us have a look at
:23:51. > :23:55.Harry out of the Brooks. -- the blocks. He can be aggressive. He
:23:55. > :24:04.suffers from injuries a lot. He cannot fulfil the potential he
:24:04. > :24:12.could expose him to. He has qualified here. Qualified nicely.
:24:12. > :24:20.There is a bit of a surprise. Catalin Cimpeanu. We have not
:24:20. > :24:23.really seen him race. A good win really seen him race. A good win
:24:23. > :24:32.for him. Paris safely through. -- Harry. How are you looking at the
:24:32. > :24:37.event? It is an opportunity for us to work on a few new things and try
:24:37. > :24:41.to implement them. I had a bit of a stumble. Lots of things to work on.
:24:41. > :24:46.It was a better run than I have been doing the majority of the
:24:46. > :24:56.season. I am lucky to be here. I will make the most of it. What
:24:56. > :24:56.
:24:56. > :25:01.other trickiest things and the best things of changing coach? Hope and
:25:01. > :25:07.confidence. I beat Yohan Blake and look at where he is now. So a new
:25:07. > :25:12.coach is a new start. I want to go out there and say -- and do what I
:25:12. > :25:22.can do. Can I say hello to Dave Royal? Good to see you back. All
:25:22. > :25:25.
:25:25. > :25:31.the best. Dwain Chambers is ready for the second heat. We have heard
:25:31. > :25:38.from him, we have seen him, we wonder how his back is. That did
:25:38. > :25:46.seem to be troubling him in Glasgow. He did not get through the heats.
:25:46. > :25:53.He is 34 years old. Still with a passion for it. He has got one or
:25:53. > :26:03.two new names. He needs to look out two new names. He needs to look out
:26:03. > :26:06.
:26:06. > :26:10.for Jimmy Vicaut. The Romanian threw his hat into this -- into the
:26:10. > :26:18.ring. He thought that was his best of the year. Emmanuel Biron got
:26:18. > :26:24.fourth place. That was the automatic qualification spot. This
:26:24. > :26:29.is how they line up for the second. Jimmy Vicaut is a very promising
:26:29. > :26:39.French man. He has just turned 21. European junior champion a couple
:26:39. > :26:53.
:26:53. > :26:59.trying to run through his injury but you saw in Glasgow, there was
:26:59. > :27:03.not the same spring in his step. was not the strong at Dwain
:27:03. > :27:09.Chambers we expect to see. He did attempt to raise but it was
:27:09. > :27:19.gingerly. He is here. -- to race. When he is on the track had a major
:27:19. > :27:25.Championship, he gives it his heart and soul. 6.58 this season. He did
:27:25. > :27:30.not get close to that in Birmingham. There is Jimmy Vicaut. He has been
:27:30. > :27:38.working with a dance teacher to working with a dance teacher to
:27:38. > :27:44.help him run with more relaxation. Any thoughts? Won the French indoor
:27:44. > :27:54.title recently. Very, very good French sprinters coming through.
:27:54. > :28:02.
:28:02. > :28:08.Italy a strong as well. There is Jaysuma Saidy Ndure of Gambia. If
:28:08. > :28:14.Dwain Chambers is near his best, he is not at his best, but if he is at
:28:15. > :28:20.10% of it, he should have a chance here. He should go through all
:28:20. > :28:30.things being equal. It is a small field for this race. Four go
:28:30. > :28:38.
:28:38. > :28:45.through from each heat plus the false start of. There is a done
:28:45. > :28:51.rose. -- Odain Rose. He is the Swedish champion. Jimmy Vicaut is
:28:51. > :28:59.the man who comes in on the hottest form. He does like to look at his
:28:59. > :29:09.watch before he sets into the blocks, Dwain Chambers. He is not
:29:09. > :29:37.
:29:37. > :29:40.doing that today unless he has his best form. This is not going to
:29:40. > :29:45.be his Championship unless something dramatic happens. It is
:29:45. > :29:52.all laid out beside Jimmy Vicaut. He was very impressive. The-4 run
:29:52. > :29:59.by him. Absolutely wonderful. Flawless. -- a beautiful run. So
:29:59. > :30:09.relaxed at the end. The final time was 655. A lot more to come from
:30:09. > :30:12.
:30:12. > :30:18.that young man. -- 6.55. A bit of a gap there. A tenth of a second. He
:30:18. > :30:23.is saying, this is what I have got. Here is Dwain Chambers. A less he
:30:23. > :30:28.explodes out of the blocks, you can know he is struggling. He has no
:30:28. > :30:36.good contact on the floor, there is no drive, he does not get into is a
:30:36. > :30:40.bright spring tide running. You can see by his head he is thinking,
:30:40. > :30:45.just pain. He is really suffering. He is an athlete who has not had
:30:45. > :30:52.many injuries. He is finding out how damaging it can be. A very,
:30:52. > :30:57.very frustrated figure, Dwain Chambers. He may well go through to
:30:57. > :31:02.the semi-finals which take place tomorrow. His time is 6.78. It is
:31:02. > :31:12.tomorrow. His time is 6.78. It is some way off his best. Dwain
:31:12. > :31:28.
:31:28. > :31:32.Chambers, we will see if he gets he is frustrated. I sent a bit of
:31:32. > :31:39.anger. Phil Jones tried to get hold of him that he decided that it was
:31:39. > :31:43.not the time, throws his top down with real disgust. You can see the
:31:43. > :31:47.anger of Dwain Chambers there because we wondered what form he
:31:47. > :31:54.would be in in terms of his injury and he wandered as well and there's
:31:54. > :32:01.the answer. A very annoyed Dwain Chambers, he may be back as one of
:32:01. > :32:06.JONATHAN EDWARDS: Quite a strong reaction from Dwain Chambers. I am
:32:06. > :32:10.surprised to see that. Are you? Dwain Chambers does not like to
:32:10. > :32:15.perform like that, especially on the European stage but clearly he
:32:15. > :32:22.is not in shape. He looked very laboured out of the blocks. His
:32:22. > :32:26.contacts seem to be so long on the floor and that is not the person we
:32:26. > :32:29.know. He has had a back injury and sometimes that means the signals
:32:29. > :32:33.are not getting from your brain down to your muscles and it looked
:32:33. > :32:38.like he was struggling to get the turnover and cadence and an
:32:38. > :32:48.unbalanced way of running. Let's see if we can pick up anything from
:32:48. > :32:50.
:32:50. > :32:55.No better here. You would expect him to be high in his feet but he
:32:55. > :32:58.was fighting every step of the way. Nothing majestic about that.
:32:58. > :33:03.Nothing that looked like this printing we have come to expect
:33:03. > :33:08.from him. It was hard work. -- from the sprinting. We also must
:33:08. > :33:13.remember that if you go back to Glasgow at the end of January, up
:33:13. > :33:17.in the Commonwealth Games arena, he was 6.58 out of the blocks first
:33:17. > :33:22.and looks great so something has happened and that is what I am
:33:22. > :33:26.surprised four, he has not a valid reason for not running well. He has,
:33:26. > :33:31.but if it is something like trapping in his back, that can come
:33:31. > :33:35.and go. As easily as the bed not being comfortable here. If it is
:33:35. > :33:41.just not firing as well as yesterday. It looks like he was
:33:41. > :33:44.hoping and knew the shape was there, but it looked like he was sinking
:33:45. > :33:49.on his left side. He has usually been very willing to give answers
:33:49. > :33:53.to why things have gone wrong and I am sure he will come back and speak
:33:53. > :33:58.to Phil Jones later but we will get a reaction from Dwain Chambers but
:33:58. > :34:08.we saw those pictures of him winning in 2009, running six but 42,
:34:08. > :34:10.
:34:10. > :34:13.the second-fastest time of all time. -- running 6.42. He usually does
:34:13. > :34:19.communicate what is going on so clearly he is disappointed more
:34:19. > :34:23.than anything else. A quick word on the French athlete. He looked
:34:23. > :34:28.amazing. I think there's more to come but he is definitely favourite
:34:28. > :34:34.moving forward. Let's get back to the track and James Dasaolu goes
:34:34. > :34:44.first in this, equal top ranked Brit so far and back to the
:34:44. > :34:45.
:34:45. > :34:51.earlier in the season and we have not seen him race since the UK
:34:51. > :34:56.trials and they argue whether or not he has been 100%, but he is
:34:56. > :35:04.certainly capable of doing well here. A decent season outdoors last
:35:04. > :35:08.year and somebody who has already shown that once you are running
:35:08. > :35:15.under 6.6 indoors, certainly at the moment, you will be in with a good
:35:15. > :35:19.shout. It will be close, we will say Michael Tumi alongside him, a
:35:19. > :35:29.bit of a revelation, breaking the Italian record on a couple of
:35:29. > :35:31.
:35:31. > :35:41.the French athlete, was. James Dasaolu, has surely got a better
:35:41. > :35:59.
:35:59. > :36:03.Michael Tumi. A very good Russian is currently in the fastest loser
:36:03. > :36:07.spot so if he does go through, he will have to find his number, and
:36:07. > :36:12.he shared, both of which he threw off and then be back for the semi-
:36:12. > :36:16.finals tomorrow hopefully. I am not sure that lots of people will run
:36:16. > :36:26.quicker than that here but we will see. Two people outside the top
:36:26. > :36:28.
:36:28. > :36:38.Arena tonight. A better crowd than this morning although we expected
:36:38. > :36:39.
:36:39. > :36:49.bigger crowds of the weekend as you would expect. Field event
:36:49. > :36:50.
:36:50. > :37:00.the pole vault. James hopefully waiting for his chance to go
:37:00. > :37:03.
:37:03. > :37:10.year, Michael Tierney, everybody thought he is in goods shape, and
:37:10. > :37:18.this plan has run a personal best down to 6.51 on three occasions.
:37:18. > :37:23.For now, this is where the focus is. Michael Tierney, I was watching a
:37:23. > :37:27.video of him winning in the Italian championships when he ran that 6.51,
:37:27. > :37:31.he has only run on two occasions this year but, but he really did
:37:31. > :37:36.explode out of the blocks and the middle part of the race really
:37:36. > :37:42.impressive. Let's see what he does. The Frenchman James is different,
:37:42. > :37:46.he has improved his start, but he is best at the end. He knows to get
:37:46. > :37:56.to the final and you will get your first view of Michael Tierney here.
:37:56. > :38:13.
:38:13. > :38:17.He is in the blue of Italy. James pleased to see that when you have
:38:17. > :38:23.not raced for a while, you come into your heat and comment, you may
:38:23. > :38:29.pick up on the start. And how James Dasaolu, how he got out. A bit of a
:38:29. > :38:36.weird right arm from Michael Tumi, but James Dasaolu and looked very
:38:36. > :38:39.relaxed in the last 20 minutes. no stress at all from James. He
:38:39. > :38:44.drove through the first 20 metres and was looking at Michael Tierney
:38:44. > :38:48.from about 40 metres so that tells me that he feels good, he is in
:38:48. > :38:56.great shape and he is looking at his opponents and saying he is
:38:56. > :39:02.there with him. An excellent performance from James. Let's see
:39:02. > :39:06.exactly what happened. You have to drive this bit, react well and
:39:06. > :39:12.drive but he slyly stumbled a bit. Lost a bit of balance but he got
:39:12. > :39:16.back into his running -- slightly stumbled. I wish he would start
:39:16. > :39:19.doing that nice bounce down the track, it makes a huge difference
:39:19. > :39:24.to your sprinting. And what a great way of demonstrating that
:39:24. > :39:31.relaxation. Well done, James. news for him but not for Dwain
:39:31. > :39:37.Chambers because behind him, quite a few people went well. An
:39:37. > :39:40.impressive performers but at the bottom, but 6.74 and 6.76
:39:40. > :39:47.qualification means they go through as the fastest and Dwain Chambers
:39:47. > :39:54.does not go through. Two men through, Harry Aikines-Aryeetey and
:39:54. > :39:59.James Dasaolu, there's qualification. Very impressive from
:39:59. > :40:06.James Dasaolu and Harry safely through as well. A real opportunity
:40:06. > :40:16.for James Dasaolu but he will have to be going... As quick as he has
:40:16. > :40:21.
:40:21. > :40:25.ever been. No Dwain Chambers in the looked relaxed out there. I had a
:40:25. > :40:29.plan to make it to the qualifiers as easily as possible. I thought I
:40:29. > :40:35.would drive out and qualify so I was in a good position. I knew I
:40:36. > :40:42.did not have to push or try, just to try to conserve energy. You have
:40:42. > :40:47.not run that money raised is indoors but you have been putting
:40:47. > :40:54.the work in. My coach has belief in me, he knows I do not need to
:40:54. > :41:00.compete, compete, compete. He can even afford a look sideways, that
:41:00. > :41:06.is how comfortable new look. Yeah, when I looked round I was just
:41:06. > :41:16.checking my position. More to come? Or of course. I would like to think
:41:16. > :41:22.
:41:22. > :41:28.so. Good luck. Cut to do double. -- the chairman of UK Athletics a
:41:29. > :41:32.moment ago. You can see Sebastian Coe there and his wife. Middle-
:41:32. > :41:42.distance runners, Sebastian Coe used to love running indoors with
:41:42. > :41:45.
:41:45. > :41:50.when he won the European indoor title. He has got that many titles
:41:50. > :41:55.these days. Confirmation that Dwain Chambers did not make the semi-
:41:55. > :42:00.finals. The petulant reaction that we saw and I think what surprised
:42:00. > :42:10.us both about that was that he was always the figure that people love
:42:10. > :42:13.
:42:13. > :42:17.After his suspension and coming back, he was looking like he wanted
:42:17. > :42:21.to please. I think it was important for him to feel that he was
:42:22. > :42:26.accepted by the public and his peers. And for him to be annoyed,
:42:27. > :42:31.you can understand that. Not speaking to Phil Jones and that is
:42:31. > :42:39.unusual because like I said before, he normally speaks when running has
:42:39. > :42:45.gone well. Even if it has not gone well, he has usually got a smile on
:42:45. > :42:49.his face. But there was frustration on his face which is unlike him.
:42:49. > :42:54.were taught about this sense of redemption that he got through 2012,
:42:54. > :42:58.he stood in the Olympic Stadium, he was allowed to compete first of all
:42:58. > :43:04.four Team GB and got a great cheer and performed relatively well. But
:43:04. > :43:08.it was almost like that he has got the freedom to be angry and he can
:43:08. > :43:13.be annoyed if it doesn't go well. He is an athlete and at the end of
:43:13. > :43:17.the day, these things hurt. These things kick in. He is free to be
:43:17. > :43:20.himself and he is expressing what any athlete would do if they are
:43:21. > :43:25.coming to the championships and not performing well. He knew he did not
:43:25. > :43:31.do enough and it would be wrong to be smiling, that is not be Dwain I
:43:31. > :43:35.know anyway. By a very bright future at the end of the career of
:43:35. > :43:40.the next person though, Holly Bleasdale is getting ready pull the
:43:40. > :43:48.women's pole vault as the qualification, she should do this
:43:48. > :43:52.comfortably. But hear her thought. -- let hear. I have had a great
:43:52. > :43:56.indoor season and I am feeling confident, training has been going
:43:56. > :44:00.so well and I think I am in the best place I could be with
:44:00. > :44:07.confidence. I am hopefully able to add to what I have achieved on
:44:07. > :44:11.nastier and happily get a medal. Was it the indoor season last year
:44:11. > :44:17.and the height of things you were able to achieve that catapulted you
:44:17. > :44:24.to greater things at doors and also sent your confidence soaring.
:44:24. > :44:27.that was a great big break through and struggling a bit outdoors, I
:44:27. > :44:31.hit some competition with bad weather conditions but this year I
:44:31. > :44:35.have come back out and buy have jumped more consistency than ever
:44:35. > :44:40.and I feel so much more confident than I ever have done in a season.
:44:40. > :44:44.I feel like I him in the best place I can be. With the change of
:44:45. > :44:51.coaching strategies, that has helped me mentally and more
:44:51. > :44:56.confidence. Dan said he could name 14 things I could change right now
:44:56. > :45:02.and it was really daunting having all those things to changed and I
:45:02. > :45:12.have changed some of those. I have made my run-up so it is more
:45:12. > :45:13.
:45:13. > :45:18.controlled. If I would have carried a pole, and like in the Olympics, I
:45:18. > :45:25.can do so much better, I can cope with different conditions. There
:45:25. > :45:31.are not many times when you get good conditions. Aside from all the
:45:31. > :45:34.pressures of the sport, you have got things to look forward to.
:45:34. > :45:38.would with some friends in Cardiff and I have been so nervous for
:45:38. > :45:43.these competitions because lot of pressure to come and win a medal,
:45:43. > :45:50.particularly being the favourite and there is lots of pressure but
:45:50. > :46:00.going in and trying wedding dresses, it has really chilled me out and I
:46:00. > :46:05.I guess she wants to enjoy herself and she wants to win. I would say
:46:05. > :46:09.so! She has learned a lot from last year. The height of expectation
:46:09. > :46:14.going into London and then not quite hitting what I am sure she
:46:14. > :46:19.would have hoped for herself, no medal and she must now realise that
:46:19. > :46:23.big hides are not just the game, it is about converting those into
:46:23. > :46:29.medals. She has a great opportunity to do that. The coverage we saw of
:46:29. > :46:39.her when she jumped her four metres and 87 centimetres, it was a
:46:39. > :46:47.
:46:47. > :46:52.It is about finding consistency. She talked about her run-up. A
:46:52. > :46:57.larger pole. She feels more comfortable. When she improves the
:46:57. > :47:03.run up, she can hit the heights. She is capable of hitting the 4.80
:47:03. > :47:10.mark again. Column, she will be one of your predictions for a gold.
:47:10. > :47:16.People will be waiting for her to deliver. What Holly Bleasdale is
:47:16. > :47:19.happy about doing is doing what she has to do to get consistent. She
:47:20. > :47:26.has not been involved in the excitement about herself. In
:47:26. > :47:32.interviews, she is quite straight. She says, this is what I am doing,
:47:32. > :47:36.give me time and I will deliver big performances. I have no doubt.
:47:36. > :47:42.There will be a time when she will be hitting marks consistently. When
:47:42. > :47:46.you do that, that is when we will start seeing her get big medals.
:47:46. > :47:53.her last competition, it was in Stockholm, she jumped, 4.45. She
:47:53. > :48:00.was disappointed and a confidence took a knock. This is section two.
:48:00. > :48:03.Lots of good action, not least in the women's 400m. Perri Shakes-
:48:03. > :48:08.Drayton is in great form. She Drayton is in great form. She
:48:08. > :48:16.looked superb. She really did. She has all this indoor season. Every
:48:16. > :48:22.time we see her, she has been demanding, executed her race really
:48:22. > :48:28.well. We know how important it is to get to that 200m mark first. She
:48:28. > :48:34.is in the outside lane, she went off like a train. She was
:48:34. > :48:39.commanding. She did a great job. The most important thing is, when
:48:39. > :48:46.you are in that type of form, it is to not make any trivial mistakes.
:48:46. > :48:56.You have to keep yourself focused. We know she can go in at 52 seconds.
:48:56. > :49:00.
:49:00. > :49:05.So Mike -- so why not run it like that? You have got to do it.
:49:05. > :49:08.was comfortably the fastest qualifier. In the interview with
:49:08. > :49:18.Phil, she said she did not expect Phil, she said she did not expect
:49:18. > :49:22.
:49:22. > :49:25.to run that fast. That bodes well. Again, she looks good. When it
:49:25. > :49:30.Eilidh Child was under pressure, she had this beautiful way of
:49:30. > :49:38.exhilarating, just to take herself clear. They showed someone who was
:49:38. > :49:44.full of confidence who knows what they can achieve. Her time was 5205.
:49:44. > :49:48.-- 52.05. It was a great performance. She was the one who
:49:49. > :49:54.did not win, unfortunately. She had a pretty solid race. She has not
:49:54. > :49:59.got the same speed in her legs. She has raced but not too much. She
:49:59. > :50:07.needs this confidence, she needs a run. She was comfortably through.
:50:07. > :50:16.It doesn't bode well, especially when we look ahead. There really is
:50:16. > :50:26.a gold medal banker. The men's 400m happened this morning. There is
:50:26. > :50:29.
:50:29. > :50:33.works on the back straight to make sure he goes into the second corner.
:50:33. > :50:38.You can see what is happening, he knows he is going on the outside.
:50:38. > :50:43.There is some acceleration to take him to the head of the pact and
:50:43. > :50:50.then he can just relax and control the race. All the British runners
:50:50. > :50:55.have a clear plan, go out fast. it worked. It was a great tactic.
:50:55. > :51:00.It is a tactic they will have to adopt when we move into the semi-
:51:00. > :51:04.finals. It was great to see Richard running well. He has been at this a
:51:04. > :51:08.long time. They would be nice to see him progress through to the
:51:08. > :51:15.final. A great run from him. Richard Strachan made it through.
:51:15. > :51:20.From a British point of view, our best chance is Nigel Levine. He
:51:20. > :51:25.beat Richard Strachan. We can see the closing stages of his race.
:51:25. > :51:30.competent performer. We expect the man in front of him to be the
:51:30. > :51:37.leader. He has had a great rise in this indoor season. He has run 45
:51:37. > :51:41.seconds outdoors. Nigel Levine would know what was going on. What
:51:41. > :51:46.I loved was he tested his opponent. Coming off the final bend, he put
:51:46. > :51:52.his foot down to see if he would respond. He did respond. He was
:51:52. > :51:59.like, OK, I know what you have left in a tank. He could sense Nigel
:51:59. > :52:03.Levine and the kept him back. would not let him past. Today, not
:52:03. > :52:07.tomorrow -- not so they, not tomorrow. It will be an exciting
:52:07. > :52:13.race. There are three athletes in this. All three got through.
:52:13. > :52:22.Michael Bingham. He took it out strong. One of the contenders, the
:52:23. > :52:31.Russian looked good. The Russian is strong. Indoors, we are not so sure
:52:31. > :52:41.of him. People bought -- performed really well. He went comfortably
:52:41. > :52:46.under 47 seconds. He has got a bit left in the tank. All six of our
:52:46. > :52:51.men and women through to the semi- finals tomorrow. Good news for the
:52:51. > :52:57.woman was a long jump. High hopes with Shara Proctor. She got bronze
:52:57. > :53:04.last year. Disappointed in London. She did not make automatic
:53:04. > :53:08.qualification. She did not. She qualified well enough. It is tough
:53:08. > :53:12.for the girls to come out and made sure their accuracy on the wrong
:53:13. > :53:18.way is there. She was beautiful on the board, running well. Qualified
:53:18. > :53:24.with 6.61. Safely through. It only to cut one jump. She was assessed
:53:24. > :53:32.in the competition, making it sure she could respond. -- it only took
:53:32. > :53:35.one a jumper. Post London, she have the point to prove. That is why she
:53:36. > :53:42.is here. She has made that clear. She was disappointed in the
:53:42. > :53:48.Olympics. She will be competitive. It will be one of the athletes I
:53:48. > :53:52.expect to find in the line-up. Jenny Meadows is in the 800m. She
:53:53. > :53:55.is the champion. She finished in is the champion. She finished in
:53:55. > :54:00.silver-medal position at three years ago. She was upgraded after
:54:01. > :54:10.the doping violation. She is team captain. It is great to see you
:54:11. > :54:11.
:54:11. > :54:17.because when we spoke in Birmingham you ran well. What was the
:54:17. > :54:22.discussion? When I crossed the line, I felt really tired and I thought,
:54:22. > :54:27.I do not want to do that again soon. I thought, it is probably what they
:54:27. > :54:31.need to do. It is a different training. You have to be quite
:54:31. > :54:35.race-fit. We decided we did not want to leave it three months until
:54:35. > :54:39.the start of the outdoor season. It would only be a couple of weeks
:54:39. > :54:46.into the Championship. Thrown in the deep end. It shows the kind of
:54:46. > :54:50.esteem you are held in, you have been made the captain as well. It
:54:50. > :54:55.is a fantastic honour. When Peter asked me, I accepted straight away.
:54:55. > :55:02.To a weeks ago, I would not have thought I would be in the
:55:02. > :55:05.Championship and a captain. -- two weeks. What about champion? I have
:55:06. > :55:14.never gone in as defending champion before. I am not sure realistically
:55:14. > :55:20.what my chances are. Certainly, I take it very seriously. I will not
:55:20. > :55:28.let the title slip easily. For you, this Championship, hive would you
:55:28. > :55:38.put it into perspective? What success -- what would success
:55:38. > :55:40.
:55:40. > :55:45.before you? The coach would say it is to practise your mental skills.
:55:46. > :55:49.It is all the build up, you get a lot of nerves, the warm-up area can
:55:49. > :55:55.be daunting. To go through the whole routine is really important
:55:55. > :56:02.for me. That is ticking a box of the summer. I am a competitor. It
:56:02. > :56:07.will be trying my best, trying to defend my title. A lot of people
:56:07. > :56:12.would not expected. By Emily ranked 7th or 8th going into the race. But
:56:12. > :56:15.I would be disappointed if I am not I would be disappointed if I am not
:56:15. > :56:24.on the podium. -- I am only ranked. Her coach will be watching with
:56:25. > :56:31.eagle eyes. We can see Jenny getting ready.
:56:31. > :56:39.What we your final words? Just to enjoy herself. We struggled in
:56:39. > :56:43.Birmingham. She was a bit race rusty. She asked a practice that so
:56:44. > :56:48.when she is 100% fit and summer, she is ready to go. Was this some
:56:48. > :56:51.debate in Birmingham as to whether she would come here? Not really. We
:56:51. > :56:56.thought about it and analyse the race and thought the weakest part
:56:56. > :57:05.of the day was what was going on in her head. So we thought we would
:57:05. > :57:10.put that right. She got a gold medal in Paris after the Russian
:57:10. > :57:15.was disqualified a couple of years ago. She got there was -- she was
:57:15. > :57:19.devastated she came second that day, though. What did you think? It is
:57:19. > :57:24.difficult. If you dwell on it too much, you get frustrated. You have
:57:24. > :57:28.got to go in with the mine said, if I am doing the best they can do,
:57:28. > :57:33.you cannot complain about what other people do on the day. -- mind
:57:33. > :57:38.set. You hope people doing their job behind the scenes are doing
:57:38. > :57:42.their job. Was there anything that made you change the way you
:57:43. > :57:48.approach things in light of that result? We looked at a few things
:57:48. > :57:58.and tweaked a few things and she missed the final later that summer
:57:58. > :58:00.
:58:00. > :58:04.in day do up by a fraction. We went back to the drawing board. You
:58:04. > :58:09.could argue that was the reason for the injury but we will never know.
:58:09. > :58:15.It is one of those things. We may be did not need to change things.
:58:15. > :58:20.The Russians were doping. What are you hoping for this week? She had
:58:20. > :58:25.had a long road back after last year. Just that she is enjoying the
:58:25. > :58:30.races and getting used to the whole build-up of the day and the media
:58:30. > :58:34.attention and things like that. Knowing her, she will be eyeing a
:58:35. > :58:40.medal. She definitely had a twinkle in her eye when she was talking
:58:40. > :58:44.about, it is great to be here, but the Bodiam -- the podium is what
:58:44. > :58:50.she wants. Three years ago, we would be looking at the field and
:58:50. > :58:55.saying, let us take it on and dominated. But she is a bit race
:58:55. > :59:05.rusty and she has not done all the training we would have liked to
:59:05. > :59:12.
:59:12. > :59:17.have done. Whatever happens is a where the hard work is done. It has
:59:17. > :59:21.been a hard slog for Jenny to get back. We are delighted to see her
:59:21. > :59:25.back. She is one of the most popular athlete the team. It is
:59:25. > :59:30.great she is the team captain. As the code was saying, if she had
:59:30. > :59:35.looked at the field two years ago, only 16 athletes in it, only thing
:59:35. > :59:45.that will be eliminated in this round, the three fastest from the
:59:45. > :00:10.
:00:10. > :00:15.She knows how to bring -- to win big races. Jenny is happy she has
:00:15. > :00:25.got three races. She can be steady across three. Do not be surprised
:00:25. > :00:30.as we see her making sure the pace does not slip. Great to see her
:00:30. > :00:38.back. I have expectations and hopes. I hope she can come back and take
:00:38. > :00:43.the middle. I think she is capable but they are not 100% prepared. One
:00:43. > :00:48.thing that is not lacking is a fight. She will go out and attack
:00:48. > :00:51.like she is doing now. It is hard being in the first heat because you
:00:51. > :00:57.do not know the time to shoot for. She is controlling everything.
:00:57. > :01:04.Elena Kotulskaia goes into the lead. Bit of a stumble there. She is in
:01:04. > :01:13.control. She is happy. Happy to be racing. When you have time out from
:01:14. > :01:23.injury, that can give you an extra boost to full stop she is doing
:01:24. > :01:24.
:01:24. > :01:34.everything right. Now she is wanted to move wide. She is using her
:01:34. > :01:35.
:01:35. > :01:40.experience. Wide down the back straight. Top three to go through.
:01:40. > :01:45.Nataliya Lupu own is there. Jenny has just got to keep working. The
:01:45. > :01:48.lack of training by come into play here. You cannot switch through the
:01:48. > :01:55.gears in the same way. That determination that she has always
:01:55. > :02:05.had is still there. Elena Kotulskaia is first, Jenny is
:02:05. > :02:16.
:02:16. > :02:20.safely through in third. A few more are training, a long time out with
:02:20. > :02:24.injury and the fitness coming back but it is the race fitness which
:02:24. > :02:27.takes a little longer to arrive. absolutely, blowing the cobwebs
:02:28. > :02:34.away and you see and she is coming down the home straight, she has not
:02:34. > :02:39.got the change of pace that she normally has when she is 100% ready.
:02:39. > :02:49.But she made it and fought hard and I think she will come back stronger
:02:49. > :02:58.
:02:58. > :03:02.with other athletes becoming married and now called Elena
:03:02. > :03:06.Kotulskaia. Jenny held the position behind the Russian. She would have
:03:07. > :03:13.been able to raise the pace there and go through as Nataliia Lupu
:03:13. > :03:20.went by her. She is reaching for it to her but she is not liking as
:03:20. > :03:24.much so it she is coming away and claims that third spot. I can say
:03:24. > :03:34.that journey is just about approaching Phil Jones so she will
:03:34. > :03:34.
:03:34. > :03:43.be able to speak to him about how How did that go from your
:03:43. > :03:48.perspective? Pretty good, 16 goals in the championship and three of
:03:48. > :03:52.them have run under the certain target. I always feel quite strange
:03:52. > :03:55.in the heats when you are not quite running at your fastest pace so I
:03:55. > :04:01.tried to make sure I was in the top three the whole time and I think I
:04:01. > :04:05.am better with a faster pace so I really look forward to the
:04:05. > :04:11.increased pace. It is about getting back in the ring and getting rid of
:04:11. > :04:16.the rustiness. Exactly, I have been training on my own and you have no
:04:16. > :04:20.one ever on the track coming to barge you. You have to learn how to
:04:20. > :04:26.respond and people to bump and barge, that is the 800m,
:04:26. > :04:29.particularly indoors so I learnt a few things there, trying this time
:04:29. > :04:33.in the next round, hopefully that will wake me up ready for the next
:04:33. > :04:40.round. Do you feel there is anything missing that you will not
:04:40. > :04:44.be able to work on in such a short space of time? Yeah, hoping none of
:04:44. > :04:49.the opponents are listening to this! Better if there is a fast
:04:49. > :04:53.pace so if I do not go off in the first 200m with the fast pace, I
:04:53. > :04:58.lose the best bit of May. So that his discussions about how the next
:04:58. > :05:06.race goes, who I draw, had to play it. It might have been better to
:05:06. > :05:13.make sure it was a fast race, it may play into my hands better. I
:05:13. > :05:21.need to work out who I will get in the next round. Thanks for talking
:05:21. > :05:25.to us. It is a pleasure, fell. -- pleasure, Phil. No places to hide
:05:25. > :05:32.in the championships. Not at all, not at this level and when you have
:05:32. > :05:37.been so far away from competing and as Jenny always gives an honest
:05:37. > :05:40.account. It is knowing when to kick, do you trust you can maintain that
:05:40. > :05:44.form when the other girls are still accelerating? She will have learnt
:05:45. > :05:48.a lot from that race and she will go and analyse, like she said, what
:05:48. > :05:53.to do next and that is important to get back into the flow and it was
:05:53. > :05:57.good to see her out there. A good start for Jenny so we will see her
:05:57. > :06:02.tomorrow. And a few legs cobwebs but let's get back out now to the
:06:02. > :06:05.second heat with Andrew Cotter. Second of three heats, a reminder
:06:05. > :06:15.it is three automatically in and any three fastest losers through to
:06:15. > :06:27.
:06:27. > :06:37.like there was with Elena Kotulskaia. Marta Milani comes
:06:37. > :06:37.
:06:37. > :06:40.through from Italy. Ciara Everard settling in nicely. It is a limited
:06:40. > :06:50.field and the three fastest losers going through but they know the
:06:50. > :06:51.
:06:51. > :07:01.time they have to target. And the pace they have to set. And the
:07:01. > :07:04.Belorussian athlete is setting the pace, this place is a bit weaker
:07:04. > :07:11.than the last heat. You want to ensure that they have a chance of
:07:11. > :07:14.going through as the fastest loser. 2.03 was the fastest in the first
:07:14. > :07:20.hit and that is what they are aiming to do, aiming to go through
:07:20. > :07:30.in a bit quicker than that but they went through that in 63. There's
:07:30. > :07:30.
:07:31. > :07:37.the Irish champion, Kieran Everard -- Ciara Everard. The Czech for the
:07:37. > :07:45.bit in the Champion there as well and Ciara Everard deciding to ease
:07:45. > :07:55.her way around her opponent. She is the Irish Universities indoor
:07:55. > :08:01.champion and that has improved her personal best to under 2.02. And
:08:01. > :08:08.stretching away and opening a gap. Yes, and opening the gap between
:08:08. > :08:12.her and Lenka Masna. She is showing some real form and class here, Kira
:08:12. > :08:19.Everard and she will win this one comfortably, a battle behind her
:08:19. > :08:29.for the automatic qualification between Lenka Masna and Marta
:08:29. > :08:35.Milani. A great race from Ciara Everard. This is well within her
:08:35. > :08:42.capabilities. She had plenty here. Looking very, very impressive, she
:08:42. > :08:47.is still coming away down the home straight. Marina Arzamasova
:08:47. > :08:57.fighting back but we were talking before about giving youngsters the
:08:57. > :08:59.
:08:59. > :09:03.chance to build and gain experiences and it to gain the
:09:03. > :09:10.conference. Ciara Everard looking impressive there, timing it well
:09:10. > :09:13.and she knew she was probably the class athlete and she made it tell.
:09:13. > :09:20.She was sensing that as Marina Arzamasova was putting the pace
:09:20. > :09:24.slowed a bit, she moved smoothly past and continued to go away. She
:09:24. > :09:31.is in control and winding up the pace, Lenka Masna tried to get back.
:09:31. > :09:37.A bit more to come in the next round by the looks of it. She was
:09:37. > :09:41.looking strong here. Perhaps testing herself a bit, 29.5 in the
:09:41. > :09:47.last lap which was very impressive and just see what she had in the
:09:47. > :09:55.tank. Not a very quick time overall but it was a quick last lap so she
:09:55. > :10:02.has made their way none too wearily A big smile on her face and
:10:02. > :10:07.deservedly so. It was good. I kicked out at 200m and I felt
:10:07. > :10:11.pretty strong. I had it all the way to the finish line, so it is about
:10:11. > :10:15.focusing on the semi-final. It has been a great day for Ireland, we
:10:15. > :10:18.were talking to your colleagues, a small tin that a great deal of
:10:18. > :10:23.camaraderie and real potential for success. Definitely. One of the
:10:23. > :10:29.strongest teams we have ever had coming to these championships. It
:10:29. > :10:33.raises the atmosphere among the camp. It is great to have the
:10:33. > :10:39.senior people and the juniors as well. It is really good. What are
:10:39. > :10:43.your own expectations as you move forward? My plan is to take it
:10:43. > :10:46.round by round, this is my first major championships. I want to get
:10:46. > :10:54.back and recover and see how the semi-finals go back. An impressive
:10:54. > :10:58.Earlier on during the lunchtime Earlier on during the lunchtime
:10:58. > :11:04.break we had the pentathlon it shot put taken place. This was the first
:11:04. > :11:09.of five disciplines today the young it 18-year-old Belgian who already
:11:09. > :11:16.holds the world junior indoor record. She threw 13.88 but the
:11:16. > :11:21.longest one of the day comb from the defending pentathlon champion.
:11:21. > :11:30.Well over 50m, the longest shot put we had seen and put her up from
:11:30. > :11:40.sixth into second place. But the lead still being held by Yana
:11:40. > :11:46.
:11:46. > :11:53.Maksimava. She threw 14.65 to keep the women's 800m. This could be a
:11:53. > :11:58.young star of the picture, this is Anta Hinriksdottir, she only turned
:11:58. > :12:03.19 last month, 4th in the world juniors, the silver medal race
:12:03. > :12:10.leader in that but she really did attack that race. And I think she
:12:10. > :12:20.will be a star of the future. She has just run just as quick as she
:12:20. > :12:24.
:12:24. > :12:30.did last year, and just 17 years of first heat, Elena Kotulskaia coming
:12:30. > :12:37.through there and looking pretty impressive. Kira Everard winning
:12:37. > :12:42.the second heat. And Marta Milani disqualified for Italy, we do not
:12:42. > :12:52.know why she was disqualified. means that all six women could go
:12:52. > :13:12.
:13:12. > :13:22.times areas champion. A great new indoor facility in Ireland. Many of
:13:22. > :13:25.
:13:25. > :13:29.the athletes have run close to Albanian athlete, she is having a
:13:29. > :13:33.cracking season as well. She is reasonably experienced, whether she
:13:33. > :13:37.had begun, luckily or not the starter has brought them back. --
:13:37. > :13:43.whether she heard the gun. I am not sure it was the starter's fall,
:13:43. > :13:47.everybody else started fine. You do not often see a false start in the
:13:47. > :13:52.800m. Not very often at all! I am not sure any of them know what
:13:52. > :13:57.happened. Some of them found their way round the first bend before the
:13:57. > :14:04.recall. The starter has got his arm up to say everything was clear, she
:14:04. > :14:12.just did not hear them and for whatever reason, they have been
:14:12. > :14:19.recalled, luckily for her. She will receive... She will not be
:14:19. > :14:25.disqualified, I will be amazed if she is. What is the problem now?
:14:25. > :14:31.They are worried about her number for some reason. Oh, she folded it
:14:31. > :14:35.over with the sponsor. It's as Gothenburg and that, it is just so
:14:35. > :14:42.everybody knows where we are. She either did not here or did not know
:14:42. > :14:49.whether there with the starter's gun. Paula Habovstiakova then
:14:49. > :14:53.paused and then meet marksmen decided they would bring them back.
:14:53. > :14:58.Shall we have a crop top conversation?! If they would like
:14:58. > :15:03.to make the babes at have something softer that does not rub the things
:15:03. > :15:07.out of your abdomen, I am not sure it is so important out of the plot,
:15:07. > :15:12.but she did does seem to have it folded under her she did it as she
:15:12. > :15:14.was walking back for the restart. Indignation in the cross-country
:15:14. > :15:22.world in the Sunderland International's, some women wearing
:15:22. > :15:28.crop tops. It was in Newcastle, what can you expect? To has done it
:15:28. > :15:32.again! I cannot believe that. The reason, you do not see too many
:15:32. > :15:41.Albanian athletes, she runs on the circuit, running well this year,
:15:41. > :15:46.she has then to us -- then had to storm through and she is lucky to
:15:46. > :15:51.get through. We see a youngster at the front who loves to get out
:15:51. > :15:58.there with a slightly odd action. But she has stormed through the
:15:58. > :16:03.first 200m, 28.79. A fast start and Luiza Gega getting herself into the
:16:03. > :16:09.race. Yes, but impressive that Anta Hinriksdottir is just going for it.
:16:09. > :16:13.She has got a slightly lower lean and an effective stance in moving
:16:13. > :16:21.away. She is relishing being on the stage and having this opportunity
:16:21. > :16:25.and she is turning this into two races. A bit of inexperience on the
:16:25. > :16:29.17-year-old, she does not need to go this fast. She likes to front
:16:29. > :16:33.run, she did it in the world junior championships and as Paula was
:16:33. > :16:39.saying, she has got that action and I am sure she will get more upright
:16:39. > :16:47.and stronger, a great, long, languid stride on her. And now
:16:47. > :16:57.Luiza Gega is struggling to get involved now. They are taking much
:16:57. > :17:15.
:17:15. > :17:22.going past. Then followed by the Ukrainian, who is the second round.
:17:22. > :17:29.She is taking -- trying to take control of the race. Rose-Anne
:17:29. > :17:35.Galligan wins. The refrain in second place. A very tired
:17:35. > :17:41.youngster in third place. It is inexperience. She has loads of
:17:41. > :17:48.ability and talent. Galligan has the experience. There is the start.
:17:48. > :17:53.If you have done it once, you should be forewarned. She had to
:17:53. > :17:57.work so hard to get back involved. By the final stage, she is really
:17:58. > :18:01.tired. The more tired, the more the forward lean comes into play. She
:18:01. > :18:05.has done enough. She cannot run like that against the senior
:18:05. > :18:10.athletes when she gets into the semi-finals. She will have to hope
:18:10. > :18:17.she gets pulled round and runs with a bit more common sense. She went
:18:17. > :18:27.very fast through the first 200 metres. Gallacher looked good. --
:18:27. > :18:37.
:18:37. > :18:45.Have you ever seen that? The first time that you could maybe excuse
:18:45. > :18:51.someone from a -- or not hearing it. But not twice. The second time,
:18:51. > :18:56.they cannot start the race again. She is looking at them have run
:18:56. > :19:00.away from her and then she is on the back foot. She is working
:19:00. > :19:07.really hard. She has the stress of knowing it is her error that has
:19:07. > :19:13.put her in a position. No problems for Rose-Anne Galligan. Ireland are
:19:13. > :19:15.having a good day. She is full of smiles.
:19:16. > :19:23.smiles. Another excellent performance. It
:19:23. > :19:28.must be catching. Seeing my team- mates compete well, I wanted to as
:19:28. > :19:34.well. A rather bizarre start with the Albanian athlete not hearing
:19:34. > :19:39.begun? What did you see? I got a fright. I thought I had done
:19:39. > :19:43.something. I think it was her numb but that she was not showing. I do
:19:43. > :19:48.not know what was going on. -- her number. You took care of business.
:19:48. > :19:57.What are you hoping to do from here on in? The first thing is to make
:19:57. > :20:02.the semi-finals. It is my first time. I will speak to my coach and
:20:02. > :20:12.see what the plan is for tomorrow. see what the plan is for tomorrow.
:20:12. > :20:25.
:20:25. > :20:35.fastest qualifiers, it did not take much to get through. Luiza Gega has
:20:35. > :20:38.
:20:38. > :20:46.been disqualified. We hope Jenny Meadows will go well. That is a
:20:46. > :20:51.wide-open race. Gear Everard was very impressive. Two Irish women
:20:51. > :20:57.are through. -- a Ciara Everard. Jenny Meadows will not be too far
:20:57. > :21:03.away if she can find her old form. Still to come: We have got the
:21:03. > :21:09.heats of the men's 800m. Michael Rimmer is going well this season.
:21:09. > :21:15.He will be in with a church -- with a chance. Mukhtar Mohammed is
:21:15. > :21:25.ranked number two. They ran well in Birmingham. Do not forget Joe
:21:25. > :21:28.
:21:28. > :21:35.Thomas. He makes up our trio in the men's 800m. Then the triple jump
:21:35. > :21:45.champion, Emile Aldama will be looking to qualify. We also have
:21:45. > :21:51.
:21:51. > :21:58.Robbie Grabarz as well. Robbie Grabarz finishes the first attempt.
:21:58. > :22:08.Very, very good indeed. It is a bronze for Britain and bronze for
:22:08. > :22:12.
:22:12. > :22:19.How much has the success kept you inspired? The success breeds
:22:19. > :22:24.success? A looking at last season, it would be easy to drop my
:22:24. > :22:29.personal best and say I was happy. But it is enjoyable. When it is
:22:29. > :22:37.going right, it is even more fun. You want more and more of that. It
:22:37. > :22:44.is what you do it for. That keeps you motivated. How would you assess
:22:44. > :22:50.how the indoor season is going for you? Quite well. I missed a bar but
:22:50. > :22:54.I wanted. But I have trained really hard and the things I have done
:22:54. > :22:59.have created positive problems. A bit faster, but more powerful and
:22:59. > :23:04.they are hard things to deal with we were used to jumping a certain
:23:04. > :23:12.way. It is putting a lid on it and controlling it. I have prepared
:23:12. > :23:17.well for this. That is interesting. You are fired up for the winter
:23:17. > :23:21.season, it is hard to incorporate into technique. Be it is. He will
:23:22. > :23:26.have to make adjustments with his run-up. His take-off position as
:23:26. > :23:33.well. They are positive problems because he is looking at jumping
:23:33. > :23:37.2.40. That is where he is heading. He is a fantastic athlete. He is
:23:37. > :23:42.rising through the ranks and featuring at European Championships.
:23:42. > :23:52.I cannot wait to see him jump. He will probably... There has not been
:23:52. > :23:53.
:23:53. > :24:01.a victory for Britain since 1984. - - 1994. How high did he jump? It
:24:01. > :24:06.was 2.37. That is five. -- high. We will see Robbie Grabarz later.
:24:06. > :24:16.Holly Bleasdale is coming in at 4.46. Now we will concentrate on
:24:16. > :24:29.
:24:29. > :24:39.the hurdles. This is the men's Lagarde Martinot is perhaps the man
:24:39. > :25:08.
:25:08. > :25:18.final. He just squeeze through. A loud roar from the crowd of Philip
:25:18. > :25:18.
:25:18. > :25:28.Nossmy. We were talking about him being soft out of the blocks. He
:25:28. > :25:30.
:25:30. > :25:40.does get going. He has done 7.53 this year. This was a personal best
:25:40. > :25:45.
:25:45. > :25:55.for Paolo Dal Molin. He is the Portuguese record holder indoors.
:25:55. > :25:57.
:25:57. > :26:07.He lowered it to 7.68. He is very strong. Perhaps not quite at Sergei
:26:07. > :26:15.
:26:15. > :26:23.Shubenkov's level. But strong in his heat. A Greek record holder.
:26:24. > :26:33.Spain came through in 7.75 in the heats. It will be interesting to
:26:34. > :26:57.
:26:57. > :27:07.see who Pascal Lagarde Martinot the final. It takes place later
:27:07. > :27:44.
:27:44. > :27:49.him. He is slow out of the blocks, Pascal Lagarde Martinot. You cannot
:27:49. > :27:53.at any stage be resting in your blocks. You have got to be shot out
:27:53. > :27:58.of them and put pressure on your opponent and dictate the race.
:27:58. > :28:03.Paolo Dal Molin from Italy. They are excited about this man. He set
:28:03. > :28:06.a personal best in the eaves. He has gone a bit quicker here. Good,
:28:06. > :28:15.strong performance from him. A couple of mistakes earlier on but
:28:15. > :28:25.he managed to take the victory in 7.58. Konstantin Shabanov got third
:28:25. > :28:26.
:28:26. > :28:30.place. Greece take fourth place. Paolo Dal Molin was being hunted
:28:30. > :28:40.down by a Pascal Lagarde Martinot. Look at the start. You have got to
:28:40. > :28:43.
:28:43. > :28:48.be aggressive. Paolo Dal Molin shows that. But his trail leg is
:28:48. > :28:52.terrible. He will be a real threat in world hurdling if he can control
:28:52. > :29:02.that. We will get word to him as soon as we can. Paolo Dal Molin
:29:02. > :29:12.winning that one. Pascal Lagarde Martinot will want a sharper start
:29:12. > :29:15.
:29:15. > :29:20.in the final. People believe he can take this one.
:29:20. > :29:25.Holly Bleasdale getting ready to take her first vault in his
:29:25. > :29:31.qualifying competition for the final tomorrow. Nobody has cleared
:29:31. > :29:35.this height of 4.36 so far. 10 athletes have tried. It will give
:29:36. > :29:40.us a clear indication as to what sort of shape Holly Bleasdale is in.
:29:40. > :29:50.She is wearing the blue number as the leader in terms of the height
:29:50. > :30:00.
:30:00. > :30:04.have to go again. We were indicating earlier on her last
:30:04. > :30:11.appearance in Sweden was just a couple of weeks ago when she
:30:11. > :30:15.cleared 4.40. She has cleared over 4.70 this year. Two more attempts
:30:15. > :30:25.to stay in the competition and they will be important for Holly
:30:25. > :30:38.
:30:39. > :30:48.has had one attempt in the competition at the moment, this is
:30:49. > :30:57.
:30:57. > :31:04.her first attempt. The last athlete chat with her coach. Not looking
:31:04. > :31:14.particularly happy. She looked OK in warm-up. Here's the Russian. And
:31:14. > :31:18.
:31:18. > :31:25.the first athlete to go clear. A would hope that is what Holly
:31:25. > :31:34.Bleasdale would to achieve that the first attempt. Holly has two more
:31:34. > :31:39.attempts to get this height and JONATHAN EDWARDS: A slightly nerve-
:31:39. > :31:47.racking start to her indoor campaign, for Holly. Yes, I have to
:31:47. > :31:51.say. I have got sweaty palms. The first attempt for an athlete of
:31:51. > :31:55.Holly's calibre, she can clear that at her first attempt. She seemed to
:31:55. > :32:00.struggle. Sometimes when you're waiting around, you can get a bit
:32:00. > :32:05.tired. But she has been in these long, drawn-out competitions before.
:32:05. > :32:10.She looks like she has not got much turnover at this moment in time and
:32:10. > :32:15.you look at the contacts on the floor, she does not look sharp. She
:32:15. > :32:19.was not even tight over the bar. So I am a bit nervous. I am a bit
:32:20. > :32:23.concerned. But I expect her to do better in the next attempt. One
:32:23. > :32:32.thing she did say in her interview was quite alarming, when her coach
:32:32. > :32:35.tells you that there are 13 things that she can work on. There a shot
:32:35. > :32:45.of adrenalin for her. Let's get back out on the track for the
:32:45. > :32:53.
:32:53. > :33:03.second final of the men's 60m the final at 6:45pm UK time to. The
:33:03. > :33:17.
:33:17. > :33:25.favourite from Russia, Sergey the Russian has only been beaten
:33:25. > :33:33.twice, once in Birmingham, we saw him beaten by his team-mate and
:33:33. > :33:38.also the American. A bit of a glitch. He looked really good in
:33:38. > :33:43.qualification. 7.52. And given the fact that seven put 50 is the equal
:33:43. > :33:51.fastest in the year so far, gives you some indication of the shape he
:33:51. > :33:54.is in. The person alongside him has been going well as well as the
:33:54. > :33:59.French athlete. The French athlete was rather fortunate to come
:33:59. > :34:09.through this morning after having done a false start to all of our
:34:09. > :34:21.
:34:21. > :34:31.eyes. But he managed to argue his goes into the start into the set
:34:31. > :34:50.
:34:50. > :34:55.again. Very close for the 4th spot, the Hungarian did well as well. I
:34:55. > :34:59.cannot see him getting beat. Not quite as good a start as I expected.
:34:59. > :35:03.Colin, he is so good and technically good as well. He is
:35:03. > :35:07.good outdoors but assuring out of the blocks, maybe not as good as
:35:07. > :35:12.some of the others but he finishes his race well. And ultimately, it
:35:12. > :35:16.is to crosses the line first. It is as simple as that. This man does it
:35:16. > :35:21.with ease. No stressed or strain, calls himself through the field. He
:35:21. > :35:28.knows he is the main man and let everybody else wonder what he can
:35:28. > :35:34.do. If he wants to get down to the fast times and get into the 30s, he
:35:34. > :35:37.needs to nail the start. He does not work very effectively into the
:35:37. > :35:41.first hurdle and that costs him. The head goes very low, it looks
:35:41. > :35:45.like he will overbalance. Sometimes when you start, you start comes
:35:45. > :35:49.from what you used to do as a kid and it has not been developed so
:35:49. > :35:53.what he needs to do is to that the videos, look at where he can
:35:53. > :35:57.improve, feel he is strong and then push his start a bit. Takings of a
:35:57. > :36:00.bit off the line. Do not crowd himself too much and that will make
:36:00. > :36:09.him more aggressive in to the first hurdle and he can really compete
:36:09. > :36:13.against the top of the world. as clean, you saw him smashed
:36:13. > :36:18.through the third hurdle or 4th hurdle, he was much cleaner this
:36:18. > :36:23.morning, that was more a strength, but still could nonetheless. Yes, a
:36:23. > :36:27.but still could nonetheless. Yes, a strong performance by hand. You got
:36:27. > :36:37.there before I even knew! But Sergey Shubenkov looked very good
:36:37. > :36:40.
:36:40. > :36:48.there. He is no Colin Jackson, is leading now and Jackson is holding
:36:48. > :36:52.him. Jackson wins it. Not as fast as his semi-final and he says, my
:36:52. > :36:57.goodness me, I made hard work of that but he is the new European
:36:57. > :37:04.indoor champion. Jackson got away very well and it is Jackson under
:37:04. > :37:08.pressure but he takes it. A brilliant run. Colin got away from
:37:08. > :37:16.the blocks brilliantly. Jackson is storming down the track. He will
:37:16. > :37:20.win this, it looked like... 7.422. Not quite as quick as he achieved
:37:20. > :37:30.in semi-final qualification but Colin Jackson is the European
:37:30. > :37:30.
:37:30. > :37:35.indoor hurdles champion for the I have to say on that seven -- 7.42
:37:35. > :37:42.I thought your trail leg looked a little slow! I was exhausted from a
:37:42. > :37:45.60m. What was the idea behind the 60m? It was obviously your
:37:45. > :37:49.speciality, annoyed by sprinters for beating them? I am a bit
:37:49. > :37:52.playful when it comes to the workload and I was training very
:37:52. > :37:56.well with Linford Christie in Australia and it was he suggesting
:37:56. > :38:00.I should concentrate on the 60m at the European indoors so I did that
:38:00. > :38:04.and I ended up winning both titles. So it was a good not from Linford
:38:04. > :38:09.Christie. You talk about some athletes talking about some indoors
:38:09. > :38:12.and you always loved it. And yes, it broke up the monotony of the
:38:12. > :38:17.preparations for the summer and I could still work on being very
:38:17. > :38:20.competitive and luckily not have to break in too much of my
:38:20. > :38:24.preparations in the summer. I spent a bit more time in the gym, getting
:38:24. > :38:34.a bit more physically stronger for the indoor season so only a bit of
:38:34. > :38:35.
:38:35. > :38:42.a tweet for my training rather than a real hunger focus. A 10 bet on
:38:42. > :38:45.60 on the final, who is it on? Sergey Shubenkov, it will take a
:38:45. > :38:50.lot to beat him. I and the women's hurdles coming up now, the semi-
:38:51. > :38:55.finals, who should we look out for? Probably the Turkish European
:38:55. > :38:59.champion. She has an explosive start outdoors. At the first
:39:00. > :39:03.qualifying round we did not see her exploding out of the box but she
:39:03. > :39:08.hauled herself through. He has come under eight seconds this year so I
:39:08. > :39:18.would look to see what she can do. Thank you, Colin, with a head back
:39:18. > :39:24.
:39:25. > :39:29.times in the heat. This is how they finished in the first semi-final.
:39:29. > :39:38.Martinot-Lagarde looking very impressive. The result of the
:39:38. > :39:48.second heat as well, Sergey Shubenkov, with the German,
:39:48. > :39:50.
:39:50. > :39:58.Hungarian and Max, the Belorussian going through as well. A hard man
:39:58. > :40:05.to beat, Sergey Shubenkov the fastest there. It is his much to
:40:05. > :40:12.lose. -- his match. On to the women's 60m hurdles, the first
:40:12. > :40:22.semi-final. And very close because 11 athletes in the heats separated
:40:22. > :40:29.
:40:29. > :40:37.only by eight one hundredth of a to the final which takes place just
:40:37. > :40:44.before 8 o'clock Swedish time, just before 7 o'clock UK time. The
:40:44. > :40:54.Finnish athlete going in 7th, the record-holder indoors and out. And
:40:54. > :40:54.
:40:54. > :41:04.looking at the last couple of athletes, the women to beat, 3, 4,
:41:04. > :41:05.
:41:05. > :41:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds
:41:45. > :41:51.5, the Russian, you can see her in as well as Alina Talay. Kondokova
:41:51. > :41:57.get there, she is through in the time of eight seconds flat for
:41:57. > :42:00.Kondokova. We thought it would be flat, closer than the heats and not
:42:00. > :42:04.a Hu Jintao between them in the semi-final either. It was very
:42:04. > :42:12.close, the same two athletes were in the same heat this morning and
:42:12. > :42:17.the result will be the same, I think. Kondokova just sneak in.
:42:17. > :42:23.Nothing special happening in the women's hurdling so the performance
:42:23. > :42:31.of eight seconds is always going to be a feature. It produced a very
:42:32. > :42:38.even eight seconds. Thrust and counter flights from Kondokova
:42:38. > :42:43.responding well to the threat of Alina Talay. Taking the gold in the
:42:43. > :42:48.final later on this evening possibly, she has taken victory in
:42:48. > :42:55.the first semi-final. Eight seconds dead and confirmation of the other
:42:55. > :43:00.qualifiers coming through. Alina Talay and it was between these two.
:43:00. > :43:10.They are used to battling between each other. Running off the
:43:10. > :43:13.
:43:13. > :43:16.barriers well, it will be another Robbie Grabarz waiting to come in
:43:16. > :43:19.in the qualifications of the men's high jump, still waiting for the
:43:20. > :43:29.second attempt for Holly Bleasdale on the pole vault. But women now
:43:30. > :43:34.
:43:34. > :43:38.catch up with the women's 800m and Yana Maksimava still
:43:38. > :43:47.hanging on to a medal position at the moment. She is under pressure
:43:47. > :43:53.in this long jump. She is not a great long jumper. That is around
:43:53. > :44:03.about the six-metre mark. We would expect the better jumpers to be
:44:03. > :44:06.
:44:06. > :44:16.class malty event athlete. But Yana Maksimava came through strongly
:44:16. > :44:17.
:44:17. > :44:24.earlier today. 1.90 in the high jump. Not bad at all. 5.94, 831
:44:24. > :44:29.points and already down in second place. This lady is in pole
:44:29. > :44:33.position but needs a lot longer in order to put herself some distance
:44:33. > :44:41.between herself and the rest when it comes to the 800m and that looks
:44:41. > :44:48.a little better. She is the defending champion. The French No.

:57:29. > :57:34.up valuable energy. He will have to attack hard round the top bend.
:57:34. > :57:44.Mukhtar Mohammed is any good place. He has got to be strong. It looks

:00:17. > :00:20.might have to impose yourself on the race more. Indoors is very
:00:20. > :00:27.difficult. There is a lot of pushing and shoving. You cannot

:10:40. > :10:45.still holding him. It could be Zan Rudolf losing out. Luis Alberto
:10:45. > :10:50.Marco and Thijmen Kupers, the two. It will be close with two more heat
:10:50. > :10:55.to come up. Messy again and you would think, Paula, if you were the
:10:55. > :11:00.coach for that young lad, this 19- year-old is good. Where he was in
:11:00. > :11:04.the first two laps, he got pushed around a bit but you want to get a

:11:30. > :11:34.last lap, he is putting himself in the right position to be able to
:11:35. > :11:42.attack but he has used other bit of energy and he is running wide as he

:12:01. > :12:03.
:12:03. > :12:11.conditions with only two elbows and experience to good
:12:11. > :12:14.effect. As well as Thijmen Kupers. Zan Rudolf would be the fastest
:12:14. > :12:24.loser at the moment but with two more heat, the chances might be
:12:24. > :12:32.
:12:32. > :12:40.at Robbie Grabarz, 2.18 metres. He took off a long way from the bar
:12:40. > :12:43.but soared over. Just the third athlete to go clear. This is the
:12:43. > :12:47.second ball of qualification for the high jump. These guys have got
:12:47. > :12:51.the distinct advantage and they know exactly how high they need to

:13:01. > :13:03.
:13:03. > :13:08.Denise, a nice, comfortable Clements from Robbie Grabarz there.
:13:08. > :13:11.No guarantee it will happen easily. No, and he will not want to take
:13:11. > :13:15.any chances with this. He is looking good and he knows he is in
:13:15. > :13:21.good shape. All he has to do is to be sensible and he knows he can get
:13:21. > :13:25.through. Lots of people that can jump around 2.30, some big guys in
:13:25. > :13:34.Europe have got over that height and he is right up there in the
:13:34. > :13:41.next. -- in the next. He is so confident and he took off miles
:13:41. > :13:45.away -- in the mix. This is about making sure that he gets the
:13:45. > :13:49.clearance and he said in his interview, he is further out. He is
:13:49. > :13:53.stronger, carrying much more speed and he had to make that allowance.
:13:53. > :13:59.He will have to play with his run up but he is looking good.
:13:59. > :14:04.Automatic qualification at 2.31, we doubt it will take that to get
:14:04. > :14:14.through to the final. Micheal Rimmer looking for a good
:14:14. > :14:19.
:14:19. > :14:25.performance, a great performance in this, he raced in the 600 metres in
:14:25. > :14:32.Birmingham, that was his first ever indoor race. He had a bit of a
:14:32. > :14:38.collision with Abubaker Kaki but the result was allowed to stand.
:14:39. > :14:45.His main rival here, Andreas Bube and Giordano Benedetti. The first
:14:45. > :14:51.two will go through automatically. It will be tense for those waiting
:14:51. > :14:59.for the fastest losers and Micheal Rimmer's tactic at the moment, to
:14:59. > :15:04.hang back alongside Andreas Bube and let the others have a go. A bit
:15:04. > :15:08.of a bar-room brawl in the previous heat. Micheal Rimmer not
:15:08. > :15:12.experienced in the indoor races. Yes, he is very new to indoor
:15:12. > :15:18.racing as his first ending in Birmingham ended in a collision
:15:18. > :15:28.where he showed his inexperience. He also does not sit easily, he
:15:28. > :15:38.does not want to add too much pressure on his shoulders. He is
:15:38. > :15:54.
:15:54. > :16:02.racing in his lucky T-shirt someone to take it quicker. They
:16:02. > :16:06.have not got to run much faster to guarantee themselves a spot.
:16:06. > :16:13.earnest manner in the race is out in front at the moment. Michael
:16:13. > :16:18.Rimmer as having a look around at the moment. Andreas Bube is that
:16:18. > :16:25.the bat. He will have to make a move now. The paced lifts once more.
:16:25. > :16:33.-- the pace. Michael Rimmer will put the squeeze on and try and ease
:16:33. > :16:43.around the outside. Andreas Bube is holding him off. Michael Rimmer
:16:43. > :16:43.
:16:43. > :16:51.will have to rely on fastest loser. The time is 1.5 go. Anis Ananenka
:16:51. > :16:59.is the winner. -- 1.50. By my reckoning, Michael Rimmer has not
:16:59. > :17:04.made it through as fastest loser. And there is another he to go. He
:17:04. > :17:10.will not be happy with that. He will have learned some lessons.
:17:10. > :17:19.What did he go wrong? There was too much to do. He did not have their
:17:19. > :17:24.guests to get past Andreas Bube beef -- Andreas Bube. Michael
:17:24. > :17:33.Rimmer strained by was not able to do it. You see him coming round
:17:33. > :17:38.here, he looked like he was in control. He is covering everything
:17:38. > :17:44.there. It looks like he is following the leader, he may be
:17:44. > :17:48.gets thrown off his stride as Andreas Bube comes past. I did not
:17:49. > :17:55.see any connection there. He is trying to go around but cannot do
:17:55. > :18:05.it. Then the tension comes in and he is getting tired. He is a man
:18:05. > :18:06.
:18:06. > :18:12.that has one 1.46 this season so You ran impressively in Birmingham.
:18:12. > :18:19.You will one of the favourites but he did not work today. Why? I got
:18:19. > :18:28.caught out with a slow first lap. I have not done anything this the
:18:28. > :18:34.Civic. It felt good. I think maybe I should have 100% committed. He
:18:35. > :18:38.held me off. -- anything this specific. You are relatively new to
:18:38. > :18:43.this. You seemed like you were controlling it pretty well. You
:18:43. > :18:51.were doing the right things when you need to do. I think so. It is
:18:51. > :18:59.getting used to it. You cannot take over easily. It is a steep learning
:18:59. > :19:04.curve. More from here for you now? A different day, I will come back.
:19:04. > :19:12.A different day, I will come back. Not easy to take for Michael Rimmer.
:19:12. > :19:22.He was a bit too slow in the first half. Anis Ananenka wins it.
:19:22. > :19:22.
:19:22. > :19:32.Michael Rimmer is not fast enough as the fastest loser. Brimmer is
:19:32. > :19:33.
:19:33. > :19:43.out. -- Michael Rimmer is out. Now to the final heat. I am sure Adam
:19:43. > :19:45.
:19:45. > :19:55.Kszczot will be surprised not to see Michael River Coe go through. -
:19:55. > :19:59.
:19:59. > :20:04.- Michael Rimmer. First two to go through. It just shows, the fastest
:20:04. > :20:08.times do not come into this. It is not about who has got the fastest
:20:08. > :20:12.time. Michael Rimmer is top of the rankings but he is not true. Joe
:20:12. > :20:16.Thomas got through easily. He was in the right places at the right
:20:16. > :20:26.time. What will happen here? The defending champion is right at the
:20:26. > :20:27.
:20:27. > :20:32.back. He does not mind being there at all. He is in great shape. We
:20:32. > :20:42.expected to dominate qualifications and the final. Absolutely. He is
:20:42. > :20:42.
:20:42. > :20:46.the man on form. He is realising he beasts -- he needs to move up. Goes
:20:46. > :20:54.around. Gets himself into a bit more of a contention slot. He is in
:20:54. > :21:01.fourth place. For he has the fast finishers. He knows how to wind it
:21:01. > :21:10.up. He will have gained confidence from seeing Michael Rimmer go out.
:21:10. > :21:14.Nikolaus Franzmair is at the front. He is doing a good job. Spain
:21:14. > :21:23.already have two in the next round. He is attacking the last 200 metres.
:21:23. > :21:31.He is getting a nudge. This is a man in good form. He knows how to
:21:31. > :21:34.run indoors. He is looking for danger, there is none. We have no
:21:34. > :21:40.doubt about our winner, he is just gliding through, the defending
:21:40. > :21:47.champion from Poland, Adam Kszczot. He is just checking behind. The
:21:47. > :21:52.Jozef Repcik is through as well. That is the quickest of the first-
:21:52. > :21:57.round heats. It looks as if he is blowing a bit but he has got the
:21:57. > :22:02.pace. When he is in bother, he can turn on the burners and get out of
:22:02. > :22:07.trouble. He is dangers on the last lap. I think he has got the pace,
:22:07. > :22:14.the experience. -- are dangerous. He can use that to control the race.
:22:14. > :22:18.It is about that, coming in and imposing yourself on the race. He
:22:18. > :22:25.wants to move to the next round with confidence and show the others
:22:26. > :22:33.what he has got. It is the first round of qualification for the
:22:33. > :22:43.women's triple jump. There is the British number one Emile Aldama. --
:22:43. > :22:47.
:22:47. > :22:52.Yamile Aldama. That looks pretty useful. She has not been in great
:22:52. > :22:58.form but she has been recovering from a bad shoulder. Certainly
:22:58. > :23:05.getting better and better as the season progresses. She was looking
:23:05. > :23:12.anxiously for a coach. But I think she can be pleased with that. There
:23:12. > :23:22.is the automatic qualifying line. That will be 14 metres. Only two
:23:22. > :23:25.
:23:25. > :23:30.have done it so far. Yamile Aldama is in third place.
:23:30. > :23:35.She is a lovely jumper to watch. Just lacking a bit of sharpness
:23:35. > :23:41.after injury. She is a beautiful athlete. Strong, everything you
:23:41. > :23:46.would look for in a triple jumper. She has good speed, good phases. It
:23:46. > :23:52.will not take much, if she could get up to something like... Not
:23:52. > :24:01.even her best but around the 14 mark, she could be in with a shot.
:24:01. > :24:05.High hopes for a. Next up, it is that 1,500m for the women. We have
:24:05. > :24:09.Laura Muir of Scotland in the first Laura Muir of Scotland in the first
:24:09. > :24:15.heat. She is making her senior Championship debut. Tell me the
:24:15. > :24:21.feelings as you head into a senior Championship. I did not plan to be
:24:21. > :24:26.here. I wanted to see how things went. I am pleased to be here. I
:24:26. > :24:33.want to get a personal best. What was the reaction when it you got
:24:33. > :24:41.through? A I was delighted. It is the first senior international, I
:24:41. > :24:50.am so happy. It preps me for the outdoor season to come. This will
:24:50. > :24:55.carry forward? There are so many experienced runners so it will
:24:55. > :25:02.depend on the process. Meeting all the team managers and getting
:25:02. > :25:10.settled into the team structure and racing experience should be really
:25:10. > :25:19.good. It seems like you are a fast learner. You are pushed around last
:25:19. > :25:24.year. This is not the case now. Last year, I was still a junior,
:25:24. > :25:29.the 1,500 is really tactical. I lost concentration sometimes. I
:25:29. > :25:39.missed the break when people went. So this time, I thought I would be
:25:39. > :25:41.
:25:41. > :25:47.ready. You never know what will great opportunity for Laura Muir.
:25:47. > :25:53.Pick out a few names. You might reckon -- you might recognise the
:25:53. > :25:59.Russian. She is the world record holder. Natalia Rodriguez is an
:25:59. > :26:09.experienced athlete. She has won medals at the highest level. The
:26:09. > :26:12.
:26:13. > :26:20.Russians have already -- have always been able to won medals.
:26:20. > :26:30.Britannia Rodrigues victory that bronze in 2011. -- Natalia
:26:30. > :26:48.
:26:48. > :26:53.controversy, the Spaniard. Laura Muir's task is a task -- is a tough
:26:53. > :26:57.one. She must finish in the fastest loser spots. A bit of a
:26:57. > :27:01.disadvantage to be in the first race. She would have liked to have
:27:01. > :27:07.been in the third one. We will break off for Holly Bleasdale.
:27:07. > :27:14.First attempt at 4.46. Oh, it looked a bit laboured but she gets
:27:14. > :27:18.a. She crawled over there. The 5th athlete to clear this height. That
:27:18. > :27:26.will be good enough to take her through to the final. This
:27:26. > :27:36.qualifying competition that still continues. Well done.
:27:36. > :27:41.No mistakes for Holly Bleasdale. In this 1,500m, you can see a mish-
:27:41. > :27:51.mash. The Russia was tripped and fell, she lost about 15 metres but
:27:51. > :27:52.
:27:52. > :27:58.got back in the race. Laura Muir will beat looking for a personal
:27:58. > :28:02.best. She has not been having a great indoor season and a slow race
:28:02. > :28:07.would not have suited her. At least they are running at a decent pace
:28:07. > :28:12.in the early stages. The way that Laura needs to look at this is this
:28:12. > :28:16.race is her final, she needs to go out and run it as hard as she can,
:28:17. > :28:21.go for a personal best. There is no point in running outside of a
:28:21. > :28:25.personal best and saying, could I have made the final? She needs to
:28:25. > :28:30.go out and put everything on the line. She has to give everything
:28:30. > :28:36.she can. She asked a walkaway knowing she has given everything. -
:28:36. > :28:46.- she has to walk away. The Russian is controlling the race at the
:28:46. > :28:50.moment. She is slowing a little. Danuta Urbanik has a lot of
:28:50. > :28:56.experience, keeping close to the back. Anna Shchagina is drifting
:28:56. > :29:00.back down the field. Laura Muir is between two world-class 1,500m
:29:00. > :29:06.runners. She is in excellent company. She is running really well.
:29:06. > :29:13.She is not intimidated. She needs to watch Natalia Rodriguez as it
:29:13. > :29:17.gets into the closing stages. She does have a fast finish. She is not
:29:17. > :29:27.afraid to push through. But Laura Muir is keeping herself where she
:29:27. > :29:31.
:29:31. > :29:37.wants to be. She is able to cover anything that happens. Despite Anna
:29:37. > :29:41.Shchagina's greatness -- despite the Russian's greatness, we have
:29:41. > :29:45.been talking about the issues around Russian athletics,
:29:45. > :29:50.particularly over two years, it is good the pressure is on now. The
:29:50. > :30:00.attention has been turned towards the Russian Federation. It is good
:30:00. > :30:06.
:30:06. > :30:11.to see so many positive cases coming through. The pace has not
:30:11. > :30:16.been that good. She is struggling to put on. Look at Natalia
:30:16. > :30:22.Rodriguez. She is cruising through. Laura Muir is still in there
:30:22. > :30:32.fighting. Natalia Rodriguez will be feeling confident. She has expended
:30:32. > :30:34.
:30:34. > :30:40.a lot more energy. Natalia Rodriguez should be easing back.
:30:40. > :30:47.Laura Muir doing her best. That is the world record holder she is
:30:47. > :30:52.trying to get past. Laura Muir is just 19. She is with two world
:30:52. > :30:57.athletes. Look at Laura Muir. An attack. She has got to get in the
:30:57. > :31:02.top two. If she does that, she will be through. What a great run by the
:31:02. > :31:06.youngster. Natalia Rodriguez wins and Laura Muir, the race of her
:31:07. > :31:14.life, it will be close to her best. Probably inside it. Goodness me,
:31:14. > :31:18.that is a massive achievement she has taken. Look at the first lap.
:31:18. > :31:23.That is where the fall happened. Laura Muir was well clear. She ran
:31:23. > :31:29.a perfect race, got involved early on. Ran a good pace. It was the
:31:29. > :31:34.perfect pace of a. A bit of speed, a real gutsy finish. -- perfect
:31:34. > :31:44.pace for her. All of her supporters will be jumping up and down. That
:31:44. > :31:59.
:31:59. > :32:03.is a good target for her. What a never give up fighting and that the
:32:03. > :32:07.leisure are struggling to get past, and even though there are closing
:32:07. > :32:11.on Natalia Rodriguez, but Natalia Rodriguez have the extra gear which
:32:11. > :32:16.she stepped into. Laura is fighting hard and digging in deep and it
:32:16. > :32:26.just showed that she did not have the base that she had in previous
:32:26. > :32:27.
:32:27. > :32:32.her life, personal best and it is not just about people coming and
:32:32. > :32:36.winning medals, right at the start of these championships Laura Muir
:32:36. > :32:39.on paper has not got a chance of coming in the top six but she has
:32:39. > :32:49.thrown the paper out of the window and put in a great performance to
:32:49. > :32:56.
:32:56. > :33:01.her winning time here, and a personal best for Laura Muir of
:33:01. > :33:11.Scotland and Great Britain. With two more races to come, the others
:33:11. > :33:18.
:33:18. > :33:27.will have to hope they can go 2.23 metres,. He accelerates and
:33:27. > :33:32.flew over there. Fine jumping for Robbie. European outdoor champion
:33:32. > :33:37.and by the time we get to the final, we are sure he will be wanting to
:33:37. > :33:47.become the European indoor champion as well. Two jumps and 100% success
:33:47. > :33:55.
:33:55. > :34:04.above the rest in this heat and perhaps in this event, Abeba
:34:04. > :34:09.Aregawi, now of Sweden. Erstwhile Ethiopian athlete, only started
:34:09. > :34:15.competing for Sweden in December. And she has a season's best which
:34:15. > :34:21.is a good few seconds quicker than anybody else. Elina Sujew, one of
:34:21. > :34:24.the Sujew twins, her sister goes in the next race. In this field of
:34:24. > :34:34.seven, the first two through and the fastest losers to go through to
:34:34. > :34:44.the final tomorrow. Here it is all about Eilidh -- it is all about
:34:44. > :34:53.Abeba Aregawi. She settled in her new Swedish should. She gets
:34:53. > :35:03.clipped at first but the crowd will lift her all the way round. Some
:35:03. > :35:15.
:35:15. > :35:19.decides to take it out and control things. Stay out of danger in the
:35:19. > :35:27.heats, that is all that matters. You do not want to have all the
:35:27. > :35:32.form in the world and get knocked out, like Marusa Mismas in the last
:35:32. > :35:38.round. Abeba Aregawi running in front of her new home crowd now.
:35:38. > :35:41.The first time was in the race in Stockholm earlier where she ran the
:35:42. > :35:48.3.58 to top the rankings coming into this and to show that she is
:35:48. > :35:56.the person to beat. And for her, she does not want to say a
:35:56. > :36:01.particular place, the pace though she has not trained at, and the
:36:01. > :36:11.others sitting in behind her, letting her control the pace and
:36:11. > :36:17.
:36:17. > :36:24.winning the race that she wants to. Svetlana the second place at her
:36:24. > :36:29.heels. You get the chance to watch for the previous race in the second
:36:29. > :36:32.heat, three fastest losers to go through to the final. At the moment,
:36:32. > :36:42.Abeba Aregawi is entirely Inc control. She represented Ethiopia
:36:42. > :36:43.
:36:43. > :36:48.at the Olympics in London it can be reduced to just four months with no
:36:48. > :36:57.real protest by Ethiopia so here she is. She is married to a Swede
:36:57. > :37:01.and competing for Sweden. It could be a gold medal for her tomorrow.
:37:01. > :37:06.In front of this new home crowd, she still spends a fair amount of
:37:06. > :37:16.time in Ethiopia training and not so much time here in Sweden but
:37:16. > :37:22.
:37:22. > :37:28.understandable in the winter here in Sweden. Second place is Natallia
:37:28. > :37:32.Kareiva, and a season's best for other athletes. She is seconds
:37:32. > :37:37.Claire of anybody else, Abeba Aregawi. A different class to a lot
:37:37. > :37:42.of these athletes -- seconds clear. She is nine seconds faster than the
:37:42. > :37:49.next person in this race. I don't think that will really show, she is
:37:49. > :37:54.moving away now and she is trying to take the field a bit back. Sujew
:37:54. > :38:00.also trying to do with the move in third place but they are not making
:38:00. > :38:10.much impact on Abeba Aregawi. are trying to eat away a bit of the
:38:10. > :38:11.
:38:11. > :38:21.gap but a resolute five metres and there is the Russian and Elina
:38:21. > :38:21.
:38:22. > :38:31.Sujew, they are battling for the third place. Abeba Aregawi entirely
:38:31. > :38:36.in not troubled. The battle continues full second and third. As
:38:36. > :38:46.we look at the leader, Abeba Aregawi entirely comfortable. She
:38:46. > :38:49.
:38:49. > :38:56.is comfortable holding them at this distance. And there looks like the
:38:56. > :39:00.Belorussian athlete will have to go for the third. It looks like it was
:39:00. > :39:06.a dozen over who still may go through as the fastest loser. The
:39:06. > :39:08.automatic place, the second automatic place and hard by Natalia
:39:08. > :39:17.but little doubt about the winner. Entirely in control throughout that
:39:17. > :39:24.race. It was Abeba Aregawi. Berry, very easy and impressive and
:39:24. > :39:29.Natallia Kareiva showing that you need to fight to the line. The is
:39:29. > :39:39.going to the photo finish but it looked like she took it but no
:39:39. > :39:39.
:39:39. > :39:49.doubt about the actual winner, Muir in the first heat, qualifying
:39:49. > :39:51.
:39:51. > :39:54.by right for the semi-final. She is PHIL JONES: Congratulations on a
:39:54. > :40:04.terrific performance. Lots of people jumping off the sofa with a
:40:04. > :40:08.run like that back at home! I knew it would be close and I have so
:40:09. > :40:17.happy. And to do that against two world-class athletes like that, the
:40:17. > :40:22.world indoor record holder, you beat her! It was really club close
:40:22. > :40:27.to my personal best. The tremendous performance and lots of talk about
:40:27. > :40:30.some of the 1500m guys who could have been picked and they were not
:40:30. > :40:36.and here you are as a 19-year-old who shows what can happen if you
:40:36. > :40:42.give people a chance. So good for this opportunity and that 19, it
:40:42. > :40:52.gives me so much help for the future in races won by a learning
:40:52. > :40:58.
:40:58. > :41:03.so much. Keep it going, great to 1500m, it was Natallia Kareiva
:41:03. > :41:09.winning it on the photo finish. Abeba Aregawi well clear and
:41:09. > :41:19.looking very comfortable in did. I think step Linea will go through as
:41:19. > :41:29.

:53:53. > :54:00.no visible weaknesses. You that such an incredible technique. How
:54:00. > :54:04.do you do that? I trained for a long time. I was a kid trying

:54:51. > :54:55.athletics? You have had a strong time. Things are not quite so good
:54:55. > :55:00.at the moment. Be is getting better and better. I think it is because
:55:00. > :55:05.they have been comparing -- been compared to us before. It is a lot
:55:05. > :55:09.of pressure. But now there is a lot of new and good talent coming up
:55:09. > :55:14.with young people. Hopefully, the future looks good. It is unfair to
:55:14. > :55:19.compare because we might not have that kind of unique years in many

:55:23. > :55:28.looking as Sweden and saying, what is this system that is producing
:55:29. > :55:34.superstars? A it was crazy. I do not think anyone has a good answer
:55:34. > :55:40.for that. We inspired each other we were free from injury in a team
:55:40. > :55:45.that when you get a good atmosphere going, it just happens. I am happy

:56:36. > :56:40.friends. I will do some things in the future as well for sport but
:56:40. > :56:44.more... I am not working very much with sport right now. It is like
:56:44. > :56:49.you want to close a chapter completely and do something utterly
:56:49. > :56:54.different? Maybe that is how I work. Let us get rid of that and do other

:09:12. > :09:20.bronze medallist last year, he can be very good but can be awful. Not
:09:20. > :09:24.very good out of the blocks. The Italian, a real surprise package,
:09:24. > :09:31.only 4th but won a big race in France last week and has shown form
:09:32. > :09:38.here. The German athlete, their champion, has a chance here of
:09:38. > :09:43.winning a medal. At the favourite though for the gold, the fastest
:09:43. > :09:48.man in Europe, joint fastest in the world this year, Sergey Shubenkov,
:09:48. > :09:52.the European outdoor champion now attempted to become the European
:09:52. > :09:57.indoor champion. Former world junior champion, actually beaten
:09:57. > :10:03.his team-mate earlier this year but most of the time, he plays second
:10:03. > :10:10.fiddle, and Konstantin Shabanov. Silver medal at the European Under
:10:10. > :10:14.23 championships, the Hungarian athlete, he is in the form of his
:10:14. > :10:21.life and in lane eight, out of the action in the middle lanes, he may
:10:21. > :10:31.well be the type of athlete who could sneak through and take a
:10:31. > :10:42.
:10:42. > :10:47.medal. It will be a surprise if dominated for so many years and it
:10:47. > :10:52.is a geisha Bank of who is head and shoulders above the rest in terms
:10:53. > :11:02.of European -- European hurdling, and it is Sergey Shubenkov who is
:11:03. > :11:12.
:11:12. > :11:20.left it late, very, very late and for the first time in his life goes
:11:20. > :11:27.under 7.5, 7.49, the winning time. Goodness me... Until the last few
:11:27. > :11:31.metres, the Italian was winning. He explodes out of the blocks, easy
:11:31. > :11:36.1.5 metres on Sergey Shubenkov but he relies on his technique and off
:11:36. > :11:46.the last hurdle, just as enough. I think Martinot-Lagarde will get the
:11:46. > :11:48.
:11:48. > :11:53.bronze medal. But should -- Sergey Shubenkov has indeed added the
:11:53. > :11:58.indoor title to his repertoire. But it was close, Colin. Closer than we
:11:58. > :12:05.all would have thought. Especially when it is the Italian who comes
:12:05. > :12:13.through for the silver medal. Perhaps we were looking through to
:12:13. > :12:17.Martinot-Lagarde to push Sir Alicia Bragg of off. The important thing
:12:17. > :12:22.is to know what you're capable of, you very quickly know that he can
:12:22. > :12:31.still afford to push on, rely on a sprinting speed to get close to
:12:31. > :12:36.those barriers and then say that he demonstrated that very well. A new
:12:36. > :12:41.world League, 7.49. We said in the semi-final that nobody was in this
:12:41. > :12:47.race could go underneath 7.50, so we did not think he could be beaten
:12:47. > :12:55.and he had to work hard for this victory. But it is always about
:12:55. > :12:59.winning and he has done it. Well done. He said earlier on, Colin,
:13:00. > :13:03.when you ran that 7.52, it was easy. Nobody around him and that is
:13:04. > :13:13.almost better to come back when you did not get a good start, he knows
:13:13. > :13:17.he is down. The Italian is running the time of his life but he still
:13:17. > :13:21.concentrated and concentrated on his ability. He knows he has beaten
:13:21. > :13:24.everybody virtually in the world so when you light up in the final, you
:13:24. > :13:29.need to have that reels of confidence, it does not matter if
:13:29. > :13:33.you had a bad or great start. You still have the capabilities of
:13:33. > :13:37.winning and taking victory when it matters and he has delivered well
:13:37. > :13:44.today. The gold medal goes to Russia, Sergey Shubenkov winning
:13:44. > :13:51.with the world's quickest time. The silver medal and the new national
:13:51. > :13:58.record for Paolo Dal Molin of Italy. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde of France
:13:58. > :14:08.in the third place. A whole host of national records and personal bests
:14:08. > :14:17.
:14:17. > :14:20.behind them, a close final but they in the pentathlon, there was the
:14:20. > :14:29.situation after the last event, Yana Maksimava winning it to 0.14
:14:29. > :14:33.0.84. And looking further down the field, Nana Djimou or a few points
:14:33. > :14:39.behind, and it meant the gap was closed but Yana Maksimava could not
:14:39. > :14:49.get on level terms. The gap is only eight points in the end, Nana
:14:49. > :14:51.
:14:51. > :14:54.Djimou once again the champion. Hanna Melnychenko came on to win
:14:55. > :14:59.bronze. Some roses have outstanding figures
:14:59. > :15:04.and other races are fascinating in their unpredictability. The final
:15:04. > :15:08.of the 60m hurdles for the women, close to call even without the
:15:08. > :15:18.vagaries and uncertainties that hurdling can bring. All the women
:15:18. > :15:20.
:15:20. > :15:30.in this including the Irish athlete are capable of getting a medal.
:15:30. > :15:52.
:15:52. > :16:02.Realistically, the medals are up medals before, last year. Yulia
:16:02. > :16:09.
:16:09. > :16:15.Kondakova. Micol et Sano. She might just be struggling a bit with the
:16:15. > :16:25.times. The hurdles is difficult to predict in this race. The European
:16:25. > :16:25.
:16:25. > :17:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 40 seconds
:17:07. > :17:11.indoor champion their four years is Nevin Yanit to takes it. I think
:17:11. > :17:17.our island was in second place. Very, very tight. The winner is
:17:17. > :17:21.Nevin Yanit of Turkey. The gold- medallist. The European indoor
:17:21. > :17:25.champion. Her celebrations begin. The others will wait to see what
:17:25. > :17:30.they have claimed. What a performance by Nevin Yanit. She had
:17:30. > :17:34.a steady indoor season. Quiet early on. She has come into form at
:17:34. > :17:38.exactly the right time. She looked comfortable in the heats. She
:17:38. > :17:48.pushed herself into the semi-final, bringing a new personal best. In
:17:48. > :17:49.
:17:49. > :17:53.this final, look at that, taking the gold medal. It may be cruel for
:17:53. > :17:58.Ireland. The confirmation we are getting is she may have been run
:17:58. > :18:02.out of things for the medals. would be a shame. She had a
:18:02. > :18:05.positive first part of the race. She does faded at the end when it
:18:05. > :18:09.really mattered. We have always said, the women's hurdles, you
:18:09. > :18:15.could throw a blanket over them. When you look at the results, you
:18:15. > :18:21.can say that. 7.89, a new national record. I just heard some screaming
:18:21. > :18:31.in the background. Screams of celebration from a run up a bossy
:18:31. > :18:36.
:18:36. > :18:41.and Alina Talay. We will get confirmation later. Rule for
:18:41. > :18:47.Ireland. She has run a season's best. This is how she ran it.
:18:47. > :18:51.Fourth-placed is the worst place to be. It is a very, very positive
:18:51. > :18:58.Championship for her. She has worked hard to get back into the
:18:58. > :19:06.top tier of hurdling. She just misses out. There is nothing to be
:19:06. > :19:16.disappointed their. A performance is strong. She ran 8.05. Steady
:19:16. > :19:23.
:19:23. > :19:29.progression. Just not quite enough. are in the cruellest position. Let
:19:29. > :19:36.are in the cruellest position. Let us hear her thoughts. My sentiments
:19:36. > :19:41.exactly. The cruellest place. It was hundredth of a second. You said
:19:41. > :19:46.you were not going to do an indoor season and came so close. I have
:19:46. > :19:51.never been in a major final and not come in the top four. It is a bit
:19:51. > :19:55.cruel but it has happened before. This season I have had, it is good
:19:55. > :20:01.going. It is the quickest I have run indoors since I won indoors. I
:20:01. > :20:05.have to take the positive. By now, I am gutted. It is hard to talk to
:20:05. > :20:10.you at a time like this. You started so well in the race.
:20:10. > :20:14.started well. I felt like I fought hard the whole way. I have to take
:20:14. > :20:18.it, I will be said tonight but hopefully tomorrow will be better.
:20:18. > :20:22.If you're looking forward to the season to come, this is the best
:20:23. > :20:27.time you have done since to those and six. It bodes well. Yes. I
:20:27. > :20:32.wanted to give myself a chance to run really well. So I had to come
:20:32. > :20:36.here and do this. The preparation was tough but I did my best. I wish
:20:36. > :20:46.the figures had been -- I wish the other girls had been slower.
:20:46. > :20:59.
:20:59. > :21:03.can be proud of yourself. Well done. That looks good. He has been
:21:03. > :21:13.knocking on the door for medals for some time now. Never managed to
:21:13. > :21:23.secure one. World Championship finalist. A new personal best for
:21:23. > :21:28.
:21:28. > :21:35.him. Second place. He has responded. He is going to be in the lead. He
:21:35. > :21:45.may well have extended that. Bosnia up against Serbia at the moment.
:21:45. > :21:55.Absolutely powers that shot put way beyond 20 metres. Good technician.
:21:55. > :21:55.
:21:56. > :22:02.Very, very powerful. The best he has achieved this year. No more
:22:02. > :22:12.changes in it that shot put final. There is the result. A one of his
:22:12. > :22:15.
:22:15. > :22:22.best performances ever, the leader. The Czech Republic got the bronze.
:22:22. > :22:25.Absolutely delighted. Serbia do not win it too many major medals.
:22:25. > :22:35.Especially not at international level. In this man, they have a
:22:35. > :22:41.real star. He won a bronze medal last year. This time it is gold. I
:22:41. > :22:45.am not sure he will be able to do a lap of honour, he is a big lad. He
:22:45. > :22:49.will be over the front pages of the newspapers in Serbia tomorrow. A
:22:49. > :22:54.bit -- a little replay of what happened. That was his winning
:22:54. > :23:03.growth. It was perfect as far as he was concerned. -- winning throw.
:23:03. > :23:10.That is the end of day two. Let us rub of the British performances.
:23:10. > :23:18.This was his clearance at 2.28 metres. It looked good early on.
:23:18. > :23:23.This clearance was also very good. This clearance was also very good.
:23:23. > :23:33.He will be disappointed. He spoke to Phil Jones afterwards.
:23:33. > :23:38.Tell me how that went. I have made the final, I just find out. I am
:23:38. > :23:46.surprised. It is a great track to jump on. I run to first. I have got
:23:46. > :23:51.to control a tomorrow in the final. It is all good, I just run too fast
:23:51. > :23:57.and ran out of room. I know what I have to do tomorrow. That is good
:23:57. > :24:02.to hear. You have to that clear in the first pool. A I realised the
:24:02. > :24:07.track was really quick coming in. The first bar is always hard. That
:24:07. > :24:11.is what made the final. I managed to keep on top of it. I got too
:24:11. > :24:16.excited coming into the next bar. I need to realise I don't need to try
:24:16. > :24:20.hard to clear hides like that. It is easy for me. I have learnt how
:24:20. > :24:30.to hide embedded is easy. -- Heights like that. I tried too hard
:24:30. > :24:30.
:24:30. > :24:35.ms it up. Holly Bleasdale did the same. As long as you get it right
:24:35. > :24:40.ended up in the final, you can take care of it then. A I am really
:24:40. > :24:45.believed. I do not know what I would have done if I had not made
:24:45. > :24:50.the final. You can read those things. Good luck. Robbie Grabarz
:24:50. > :24:58.safely through to the final. It was also good news from the women's
:24:58. > :25:06.triple jump. This jump was measured at 13 metres. That was good enough
:25:06. > :25:16.to get her through to the final. We are getting towards the end of her
:25:16. > :25:16.
:25:16. > :25:26.career. She has the pedigree. She career. She has the pedigree. She
:25:26. > :25:32.
:25:32. > :25:37.has got a lovely languid style. is looking amazing at 40. She might
:25:37. > :25:43.find it hard jumping back-to-back. I am hoping she gets a good rest
:25:43. > :25:51.and comes out positively tomorrow. Let us talk about Robbie Grabarz.
:25:51. > :25:56.He was scared he would not make the final. He did. It did not work with
:25:56. > :26:01.his technique. Is about timing. Everything is. People suffer in the
:26:01. > :26:05.hurdles. You get extra strength and speed and you have got to learn to
:26:05. > :26:10.deal with it. What Robbie said to me, he said, clearly, I am learning
:26:10. > :26:15.about the event. He said, I do not have to tried so hard. He is
:26:15. > :26:18.recognising what his strength and weaknesses are. He will deal with
:26:18. > :26:21.them. A Holly Bleasdale made it them. A Holly Bleasdale made it
:26:21. > :26:27.through. She was the opposite from Robbie. She started badly and then
:26:27. > :26:33.found form. She said in her interview she started on a sock the
:26:33. > :26:40.pole. When she made the change, it helped. She got into her grave. --
:26:40. > :26:45.on a softer pole. She is safely through. -- she got into her grew.
:26:45. > :26:49.This medal is playing on her mind. She has jumped tide but she has to
:26:49. > :26:54.nail it tomorrow. The big shock of the day, Dwain Chambers did not
:26:54. > :26:58.make it through. He was disappointed in his does the book -
:26:58. > :27:03.- in his performance. I will be interested to find out the reason.
:27:03. > :27:06.Let us look at my map coverage for tomorrow. We will be back for a day
