:00:50. > :01:01.Welcome to the European indoor Championships from the Serbian

:01:02. > :01:08.capital Belgrade. It's a really impressive run by Tom Lancashire. He

:01:09. > :01:11.got it absolutely right. A gold medal for Thiam. Nielsen looks to be

:01:12. > :01:35.fairly comfortable. Pozzi gets it! He's got it, he's won

:01:36. > :01:41.the gold medal! A very good morning from Belgrade. This horror story

:01:42. > :01:45.city in Serbia hosting the European indoor Championships -- the historic

:01:46. > :01:50.city in Serbia. There were five golds on offer yesterday, plenty

:01:51. > :01:53.more today. A packed afternoon we have in store, dominated with

:01:54. > :01:58.qualifiers for the athletes. We'll be talking through those and looking

:01:59. > :02:05.ahead to this afternoon and learning more about Serbia. Last night I had

:02:06. > :02:12.my tea in the Novak Djokovic restaurant. Let's say a very good

:02:13. > :02:16.morning to our commentary team in the box, Steve Cram and Andrew

:02:17. > :02:22.Cotter and Steve Backley. Colin and Denise are in the studio. I think

:02:23. > :02:27.we'll get straight on with the action, it's the 60 hurdles for the

:02:28. > :02:33.men's heptathlon. Ashley Bryant going in the first. COMMENTATOR:

:02:34. > :02:37.Ashley Bryant involved in this first heat in the men's 60 metres which

:02:38. > :02:42.will get us under way. A sparse crowd which will build. There is

:02:43. > :02:49.Serbian involvement but Ashley Bryant is in lane three. There is

:02:50. > :02:53.Ashley Bryant. Just missed the Olympic qualifying standard last

:02:54. > :03:06.year which was rather cruel. An airline lost his poles. He's going

:03:07. > :03:13.well this season, he is GB team captain hair. Starting his campaign

:03:14. > :03:26.on 60. That's nothing to do with technical problems. That's Pesic.

:03:27. > :03:31.That was a clear false start. A quick reminder that in multi-events

:03:32. > :03:36.it is not a straight disqualification. While they do this

:03:37. > :03:43.I think Pesic has his warning against the field. Here we one of

:03:44. > :03:46.the first things I was going to chat about was how yesterday was marred

:03:47. > :03:50.by a sequence of falls starts. Ordered to do with speakers being

:03:51. > :03:55.too close, where the athletes hearing the gun quicker than the

:03:56. > :03:58.starter had anticipated? It turns out potentially there was a

:03:59. > :04:03.technical problem in that the starter could hear the beep and he

:04:04. > :04:14.was firing again to declare a falls start. The reaction times would say

:04:15. > :04:18.they weren't false starts. Sometimes you can use your own eyes but it's

:04:19. > :04:23.up to the starter to make those decisions. He would be chastised if

:04:24. > :04:29.the signals were going into his ear and he made a couple of mistakes.

:04:30. > :04:32.Sometimes it was really clear when there were faulty starts. For me it

:04:33. > :04:37.was important that the starter used his initiative and said, do you know

:04:38. > :04:41.what, comeback guys and we'll do this again properly. They would have

:04:42. > :04:47.a general feel that this is really unusual. We don't have so many false

:04:48. > :04:50.starts at major championships. This was probably the most we saw

:04:51. > :04:54.throughout the whole of the Olympic Games in just a couple of hours

:04:55. > :04:58.yesterday. I thought it was really bad and unsettling for the athletes.

:04:59. > :05:08.Let's hope today is a better day. That was a clear falls start. The

:05:09. > :05:12.final of the women's 60 hurdles there and Pedersen in -- from

:05:13. > :05:21.Denmark was eventually disqualified. There was some con club, they

:05:22. > :05:26.thought maybe the mic was too close to the blocks. This morning this is

:05:27. > :05:30.what we've just seen in Ashley Bryant's heat. This was a clear

:05:31. > :05:36.falls start. No arguments about that. Yesterday I think we saw

:05:37. > :05:39.faulty starts by the official, the starter should have been a bit

:05:40. > :05:45.clearer. Hopefully second time lucky. Again, it was a technical

:05:46. > :05:48.problem. All technical problems yesterday which we have been assured

:05:49. > :05:58.have been sorted out. The starter is doing their best but it was a hard

:05:59. > :06:02.day. The Estonian in lane one twitched and set off Darko Pesic.

:06:03. > :06:12.Fingers crossed everyone. 60 to stop the heptathlon. Ashley Bryant got a

:06:13. > :06:24.good start... Bryant trying to get back, it's all about the time. 7.05

:06:25. > :06:28.the Dudas. Anything close to Bryant's personal-best would be a

:06:29. > :06:34.very good start but Ashley Bryant. All about the winner, the local boy,

:06:35. > :06:37.Dudas. He's on the post is all around the stadium and he has

:06:38. > :06:45.delivered to the small crowd here this morning. The first of two time

:06:46. > :06:48.trials. Ashley Bryant, British team captain with a decent run. Dragged

:06:49. > :07:01.along by the Serbian just his left. Worked hard to squeeze out every

:07:02. > :07:05.hunter -- every hundredth. A possibility of medals have been

:07:06. > :07:11.mentioned over the next two macro days. Ashley Bryant has actually got

:07:12. > :07:16.a diminutive figure for a multi-events. He's quite short. Able

:07:17. > :07:20.to get up quickly. He's not quite at the top end speed of some of the

:07:21. > :07:36.others but he has just run a personal best, 7.0 six. -- 7.06. A

:07:37. > :07:40.very good start for Ashley Bryant as Dudas takes the victory. It's all

:07:41. > :07:44.about the times and Ashley Bryant with a great start. A reminder of

:07:45. > :07:51.the other events to come. There is confirmation of the result.

:07:52. > :08:10.A good start for Ashley Bryant. STUDIO: A great way for the captain

:08:11. > :08:26.to start with a personal best. Here is how the morning pans out.

:08:27. > :08:41.Great Britain has a good trio in the 60 men's 60 metres. Liam Ramsey is

:08:42. > :08:46.coming up in the second heat on a season 's best of seven seconds.

:08:47. > :08:50.Will be hoping to get himself a good clutch of points in this second heat

:08:51. > :08:55.which hopefully will go off without too many problems! A very good start

:08:56. > :09:00.for Ashley Bryant, wasn't it Denise? Yes, a great way to start combined

:09:01. > :09:07.events with a personal best. He's got high aspirations. He's had a

:09:08. > :09:10.really good winter as well. A bit disappointed not to have made the

:09:11. > :09:16.Olympics last year but he so close to that British record that if -- if

:09:17. > :09:20.he has a good day today he could see a new personal best and a new

:09:21. > :09:27.record. Help take inspiration from the final race of yesterday evening,

:09:28. > :09:31.we saw that wonderful final from Pozzi which for you seem to be even

:09:32. > :09:35.more nostalgic. We saw you having a chat with him afterwards, tell us

:09:36. > :09:38.what you were talking about. It was to remind him how good he is. Now

:09:39. > :09:44.that he can truly believe in himself. Not that he ever ultimately

:09:45. > :09:48.doubted himself but you have to prove it to yourself. You must have

:09:49. > :09:53.doubt setting in when you have had injuries like that. Winning the

:09:54. > :09:58.championship 's nails it for you to say, I can do that. Andrew knows he

:09:59. > :10:03.ran a particularly good race, smack in the middle of the field. He goes

:10:04. > :10:08.into this competition as the favourite. He was really laboured in

:10:09. > :10:11.his blocks. What was really crucial was he made no mistakes in the

:10:12. > :10:16.acceleration phase of the race. Even though he's slow out the box, no

:10:17. > :10:23.mistakes over hurdle one or hurdle two. He clattered them, three and

:10:24. > :10:27.four, slightly off-balance, but the fact he already had its impetus and

:10:28. > :10:32.rhythm in place meant he could get through and win the title. How hard

:10:33. > :10:38.is that, when you've had a poor start and you are the favourite, the

:10:39. > :10:41.temptation to try and overcompensate which is where you would clattered

:10:42. > :10:48.the first hurdle is what we see go wrong time and again. What you do

:10:49. > :10:52.automatically is to chase. He didn't do that. He just kept calm and he

:10:53. > :10:56.did what he was supposed to do all the way through that race. It was

:10:57. > :11:01.scrappy but we don't care. Just take the title. And to back up the

:11:02. > :11:06.fantastic season he's had so far, the fact he's been able to get this

:11:07. > :11:09.bank of training, he's gone into championships not really fully

:11:10. > :11:14.cooked and having to compensate for a lack of training. It will give him

:11:15. > :11:19.so much confidence going to the worlds. Completely. Getting

:11:20. > :11:27.back-to-back sessions, knowing what you are capable of. His speed, Colin

:11:28. > :11:30.you said he's a very quick on the flat and that's made a difference to

:11:31. > :11:34.him and his confidence, that he can trust his body. But the training is

:11:35. > :11:38.there, the back-up is there, and that bodes well for an entire

:11:39. > :11:42.season. Of course, when you bring in the rest of the world, there are

:11:43. > :11:47.some fantastic hurdlers from the Americas and he's going to have

:11:48. > :11:51.tough competition. We over egging his opportunity this year, is he

:11:52. > :11:55.going to be up there with those guys challenging the medals in London?

:11:56. > :11:58.Last year everything was haphazard because he didn't have the

:11:59. > :12:03.consistency of training. Headline of thinking, what am I going to produce

:12:04. > :12:07.this year? Now he has that bank of training behind him and the belief

:12:08. > :12:10.he win fast and it will have a completely different changing his

:12:11. > :12:15.mind set. Now I think it'll be really positive and not afraid of

:12:16. > :12:18.taking on the rest of the world. Watch him in London. We are looking

:12:19. > :12:26.forward to seeing how he goes through the net vulnerable rest of

:12:27. > :12:32.season. His ceremony is at 4:40pm. They are coming out now for the

:12:33. > :12:35.second 60 metres, Liam Ramsey is in this one in lane eight. Andrew

:12:36. > :12:41.Cotter would like to commentate this rather fabulous X Factor build-up

:12:42. > :12:51.here. A great track. COMMENTATOR: You would think so but you would be

:12:52. > :13:03.wrong! Anyway, here is Kristjan Rosenberg from Estonia. His season

:13:04. > :13:06.'s best time is 7.01. This is the outstanding multi-events, hyped

:13:07. > :13:15.athlete for this weekend, Kevin Mayer. He is a big star, a big star

:13:16. > :13:28.in France and the man to beat this weekend. Simone Cairoli of Italy.

:13:29. > :13:39.These are the quick as printers. -- quicker sprinters. The quickest

:13:40. > :13:51.actually Dominik Distelberger. A threat to Kevin Mayer might come

:13:52. > :13:52.from the next man to be Jorge Urena. Anything over 6000 points is pretty

:13:53. > :14:12.useful. The European Championship

:14:13. > :14:30.silver-medallist, Adam Helcelet. There are a couple of Czech athletes

:14:31. > :14:38.in this line-up. Jiri Sykora. And the second British athlete, Liam

:14:39. > :14:46.Ramsey from the city of Sheffield. He had dreams of going to Rio and

:14:47. > :14:51.didn't quite make it. From Edlington near Doncaster. He has a season 's

:14:52. > :14:54.best time of seven seconds flat. He'll have seen what Ashley Bryant

:14:55. > :15:05.did and that's all he's looking for as well. Kevin Mayer goes in lane

:15:06. > :15:26.two. It is the 60 and then the long jump

:15:27. > :15:29.and the shot put. The high jump, pole vault and finishing with the

:15:30. > :15:37.1000 metres in heptathlon for the men.

:15:38. > :15:43.It is all about those times. We already have a personal best for

:15:44. > :15:45.Ashley Bryant in the first heat. What can Liam Ramsey do and how can

:15:46. > :16:06.Kevin Maher start. Stand down, keep calm. Rosenberg and

:16:07. > :16:11.again a reminder in multi-eventing that you're allowed one false start.

:16:12. > :16:19.Effectively that is given against the field and the next would be

:16:20. > :16:29.disqualification. You can just see him twitching. A

:16:30. > :16:34.three-metre twitch. A lot of criticism yesterday of the starters

:16:35. > :16:38.but the fourth start we had this morning, very much down to the

:16:39. > :16:44.athletes with a bit of nerves on the second day here in Belgrade. The

:16:45. > :16:51.Estonian Rosenberg, a good history of multi-events. Olympic champion in

:16:52. > :17:00.2004 Estonia. Here comes the shepherds crook again. It cannot be.

:17:01. > :17:09.That is the first. Effectively forced start now against the field

:17:10. > :17:23.courtesy of Rosenberg. They all said thank you, Christian.

:17:24. > :17:33.Liam Ramsey settled in again. So Rosenberg, Kevin Maher into.

:17:34. > :17:50.Distelberger in number four. Helcelet in six. And another

:17:51. > :17:55.athlete, Sykora in layman 's number eight. That looked to be

:17:56. > :18:00.Distelberger, who is a great sprinter in heptathlete terms. To

:18:01. > :18:07.the naked eye again that will be a disqualification. I feel for these

:18:08. > :18:12.starters. They all had technical problems yesterday and now they have

:18:13. > :18:19.had three actual falls starts today. Two of them very clear and bent one,

:18:20. > :18:24.looking at Distelberger, and there is some movement alongside him but I

:18:25. > :18:29.do not know. It looks like Distelberger after a little bit of

:18:30. > :18:33.the twitch from his neighbour. The guys will have watched the races

:18:34. > :18:38.yesterday and they will have known that there were issues with the

:18:39. > :18:44.start. Athletes are nervous anyway coming out into the arena and that

:18:45. > :18:47.is just compounding it. But very much athlete error it would seem so

:18:48. > :18:52.far and a disqualification potentially afoot. So he has those

:18:53. > :18:58.reaction times written on that piece of paper. We do not get to see them

:18:59. > :19:00.any more because of the technical problems yesterday, that is

:19:01. > :19:16.understandable. Let's listen in. That is a conduct warning, that

:19:17. > :19:42.card. Not a disqualification. He has not done anything wrong.

:19:43. > :19:48.Exactly what he rams they would not have wanted. Just having senior

:19:49. > :19:52.team-mate running a personal best, Ashley Bryant. He wants to get the

:19:53. > :19:57.race away and sub seven seconds would be ideal and now I think get

:19:58. > :20:01.it over as quickly as possible. It would help if the technical problems

:20:02. > :20:08.had been sorted out and we could see the reaction times. Again there are

:20:09. > :20:24.not furnishing us with that information. Ramsay settles in

:20:25. > :20:29.again. The second heat of this 60 metres to start the men's

:20:30. > :20:44.heptathlon. Wakely this time. Distelberger going

:20:45. > :20:51.strongly. Not blisteringly quick but below seven seconds. Pretty sharp

:20:52. > :20:54.for those multi-eventers. Ramsay, his personal best, he will be down

:20:55. > :21:02.on that. That will be a little bit frustrating. Because he is quicker

:21:03. > :21:06.than that. But these athletes just happy I think to move through and

:21:07. > :21:19.still be in the competition after a couple of false starts. Urena

:21:20. > :21:28.they're one of the medal contenders, getting his nose in front and he

:21:29. > :21:38.keeps it there. A decent start from Ramsay but a little bit outclassed

:21:39. > :21:47.by the speed of the Spaniard. Urena comfortably sub seven man on a

:21:48. > :21:52.basis. Ramsay just lost some ground in the middle. Just outside of seven

:21:53. > :21:57.seconds. And OK start, not setting the world alight but OK for Ramsay.

:21:58. > :22:07.Just looking for confirmation of his time. Urena winning it alongside

:22:08. > :22:25.Distelberger. And for Ramsay his time is 7.12. A

:22:26. > :22:33.little bit down on his personal best. But finally everyone up and

:22:34. > :22:37.running in the men's heptathlon. Thank you, Andrew. That has put is

:22:38. > :22:44.about 13 minutes behind schedule, those races. We now have a total of

:22:45. > :22:52.eight 60 keeps with the men and women. We're going to be well into

:22:53. > :22:56.the afternoon now. Quite a bad start after a bad day yesterday. The

:22:57. > :23:05.officials did the right thing for you, issuing conduct warning instead

:23:06. > :23:09.of penalising anyone? That is a -- that is exactly what Denise said,

:23:10. > :23:15.just issuing that conduct warning and keeping the discipline. It can

:23:16. > :23:19.escalate time and again. What we witnessed I thought they were clear

:23:20. > :23:23.for starts by the athletes. So it was just like calm down, relax and

:23:24. > :23:27.let's get this thing in order. That will give the women more confidence

:23:28. > :23:33.now because they will have watched that again and thought, that was a

:23:34. > :23:38.false start. So hopefully that will let the discipline followed through

:23:39. > :23:44.those events. At the start of the day for a multi-eventer with a long

:23:45. > :23:48.day ahead, have you ever experienced anything like that? Nothing like

:23:49. > :23:56.this. Falls starts, there is the potential of going out. But what

:23:57. > :24:00.we've seen at these so far is record-breaking in terms of the

:24:01. > :24:04.faulty starts. And it puts a dampener not only on the crowd but

:24:05. > :24:09.on the hosts as well. It is a proud thing to host a championships and it

:24:10. > :24:13.is a great city with some really good athletes to showcase. It just

:24:14. > :24:20.needs to be sorted out. I think they're being more cautious today.

:24:21. > :24:24.Issuing bad conduct warning, it is a good sign. Well let's hope the

:24:25. > :24:33.gremlins are out of the works now. Steve Cram, take it away. We do not

:24:34. > :24:37.like those gremlins! First thing on a Saturday morning. It is not good

:24:38. > :24:41.for the athletes but to be fair to be officials, I think that was the

:24:42. > :24:47.fault of the athletes and hopefully all the equipment is working

:24:48. > :24:50.properly. Into the 60 metres, fairly straightforward qualification. The

:24:51. > :25:06.first four to go through the fourth fastest losers. This first heat has

:25:07. > :25:22.this young lady, Svoboda of Poland. Next to her is Burghardt. But this

:25:23. > :25:27.is a wide open event. Asha Philip going for Great Britain. No clear

:25:28. > :25:33.favourite heading into this 60 metres. These heats might give us

:25:34. > :25:34.some indication as to who has brought their best form to these

:25:35. > :26:03.championships. The full line-up. So the top four. Swoboda really a

:26:04. > :26:07.perfect example of a good 60-metre runner in terms of stature.

:26:08. > :26:30.Powerfully built, and really starter. 7.07 last year. 7.15 this

:26:31. > :26:39.year. Clearly away, Swoboda. Swoboda just get the nod. 7.22. Just

:26:40. > :26:43.double-checking as they clattered into those crash mats at the end. So

:26:44. > :26:53.Swoboda and Burghardt are well clear. For athletes to go through

:26:54. > :27:00.but easy qualification, semifinals. Tomorrow, actually. The men have

:27:01. > :27:06.their final today but not for the women.

:27:07. > :27:14.Not a huge amount to pick over, fairly comfortable qualifying for

:27:15. > :27:23.Swoboda and Burghardt, along Wakely. Force them to go through. But the

:27:24. > :27:29.calibre of Swoboda and Burghardt, it was never going to be an issue. But

:27:30. > :27:34.as you say Swoboda built like a 60 metres sprinter, short and powerful.

:27:35. > :27:41.This will always be her strength rather than the 100th. She takes it

:27:42. > :27:46.comfortably enough. Burghardt has a much longer stride and she can relax

:27:47. > :27:54.towards the end. Swoboda keeping the pressure on a little bit. It was

:27:55. > :28:05.very tight. The Portuguese and Spanish athletes taking the other

:28:06. > :28:11.qualification spots. The rest into the 7.5s. The overall standard

:28:12. > :28:21.really not that high. Others not really running back quickly to get

:28:22. > :28:34.to the semis. The winning time in the end, 7.21.

:28:35. > :28:41.We have seen already Swoboda and Burghardt, certainly in the 60

:28:42. > :28:45.metres for the men, a raft of British contenders. And five of the

:28:46. > :28:50.top six times in Europe this year has been achieved by British

:28:51. > :28:54.athletes. For the women it is Asha Philip who is the obvious one. She

:28:55. > :29:01.is not going here but she has got to be a contender for the gold medal. I

:29:02. > :29:04.think so, she is in good shape. She has run a couple of races on the

:29:05. > :29:11.European circuit, Birmingham perhaps not her best. Colin joining us in

:29:12. > :29:15.the commentary box. European sprinting at the minute, when you

:29:16. > :29:19.look at the overall quality on the women's and men's side, Great

:29:20. > :29:29.Britain is right up there but overall, there is a question mark.

:29:30. > :29:34.We have lost a bit of sprinting power, Frist not really producing

:29:35. > :29:40.the best that they are capable of. Some of their key names missing. And

:29:41. > :29:44.Germany, for the men, very good indoor sprinters. So we are lacking

:29:45. > :29:49.a little bit I guess of quality all the way through. But the British

:29:50. > :29:55.athletes are at the top and for us that is only a good thing. Well

:29:56. > :30:05.there is a British athlete in this, Charlotte Wingfield who competes now

:30:06. > :30:20.for water. One of the contenders there, Povh. But the calibre is not

:30:21. > :30:30.of the highest at the moment. For the women.

:30:31. > :30:44.The Belarussian champion there, Timanouskaya.

:30:45. > :30:53.There is Charlotte Wingfield, Cardiff athletics club, who now runs

:30:54. > :31:03.for Malta. She has a Maltese father. Welsh indoor champion. So you've got

:31:04. > :31:08.four to go through automatically and the four fastest losers to

:31:09. > :31:19.tomorrow's semifinals. This is the second five first-round heats.

:31:20. > :31:34.A very, very good start by Povh who is dominating this race. She takes

:31:35. > :31:42.it with a comfortable win. Povh a long way clear. Should run 7.14 in

:31:43. > :31:51.Berlin last month. She didn't leave too much out there. 7.24 to win it.

:31:52. > :32:01.Four going through automatically. Povh lays down her marker. Povh is

:32:02. > :32:05.an indoor specialist. She dominates the field very early and keeps

:32:06. > :32:14.moving away comfortably. She worked hard for this, really hard. You have

:32:15. > :32:22.your warm up, it's early morning, the body isn't that could be the

:32:23. > :32:29.reason why. She knows when she read this start that she would be the

:32:30. > :32:31.dominant factor in this race. This time in the morning that is not too

:32:32. > :32:56.bad. Povh goes through. STUDIO: I am disappointed not to see

:32:57. > :32:57.Daphne Shippers. There was a while ago one Dutch woman who loved to fly

:32:58. > :33:20.indoors. COMMENTATOR: Away they go. Cooman is

:33:21. > :33:35.going to win this one. That was a remarkable turnout for Cooman of

:33:36. > :33:46.Holland. Cooman wins it! A new world record. Cooman has retained her

:33:47. > :33:52.60-metre title, a new world record. Cooman flying. She got away

:33:53. > :33:56.brilliantly. Cooman is clear... Nelli Cooman wins the title and

:33:57. > :34:13.defends it so well. Away they go. In the middle it's very close... Its

:34:14. > :34:22.Cooman. That is quite remarkable. Cooman away well. Cooman gets it! A

:34:23. > :34:29.marvellous performance. Nelli Cooman, five times winner of this

:34:30. > :34:36.title for Holland in lane number six. Cooman with a blistering start.

:34:37. > :34:46.Cooman in the photograph with the German. Cooman gets it, six times

:34:47. > :34:52.the winner of this European title. STUDIO: There weren't too many

:34:53. > :34:56.better than Nelli Cooman indoors. A real indoor specialist although she

:34:57. > :35:12.never really transferred any of those performances to anything

:35:13. > :35:13.significant outdoors. A typical so, heat number three decent

:35:14. > :35:36.performances I guess so far. There is Akakpo, getting close to

:35:37. > :35:41.her personal best. Keep making the point that because there is no

:35:42. > :35:51.outstanding favourite, somebody could nick a surprise medal and get

:35:52. > :35:54.into the start. I said congratulations to Andy yesterday,

:35:55. > :35:58.has anyone said anything about the track? Nobody really came back to me

:35:59. > :36:03.and said the track feels really fast or anything like that. I think they

:36:04. > :36:10.are engrossed in the competition because they know everything is so

:36:11. > :36:34.close and so tight. OK. Full line-up from the far side.

:36:35. > :36:45.Kieran Neville in lane three, just 17. -- Ciara Neville. Kambundji

:36:46. > :36:58.coming through the middle with Akakpo. We'll have to have a look at

:36:59. > :37:02.that. Kambundji came to the fore in terms of recognition during those

:37:03. > :37:10.European Championships. One of the big names, she lives in zero I

:37:11. > :37:11.think. One of the big names of Swiss athletics. Didn't need to be too

:37:12. > :37:34.quick there. I haven't seen anything too the only

:37:35. > :37:41.thing we have seen is consistent 7.20s.. Which is fine, its first

:37:42. > :37:49.thing in the morning. The people who are expected to deliver those are

:37:50. > :37:52.delivering them. They are waking themselves up, putting themselves

:37:53. > :38:03.through well. I think the semifinals are going to be very interesting.

:38:04. > :38:08.STUDIO: Heat four in a moment and in heat five Great Britain's

:38:09. > :38:12.representative Asha Philip goes. She arrived in Belgrade and we caught up

:38:13. > :38:16.with her. How much are you looking forward to the weekend? I'm really

:38:17. > :38:20.looking forward to it. I didn't get to compete two years ago so I'm

:38:21. > :38:26.looking forward to it. Are you hungry for it? Most definitely, most

:38:27. > :38:30.definitely hungry for it. What would be a success? I'd like to get a

:38:31. > :38:36.medal, hopefully the shiniest of them all. But, you know, these girls

:38:37. > :38:42.are running quite fast. I'm hoping to pull it out of the bike this

:38:43. > :38:48.weekend and perform at my best. And, home with a shiny medal. What would

:38:49. > :38:53.pulling it out of the bag mean? Definitely a personal best. I'm

:38:54. > :38:58.going to have to run that to get a medal at this Championships.

:38:59. > :39:01.Executing my races. How much do the nerves and the fact it's the

:39:02. > :39:07.European Indoor Championships, how much does that change you

:39:08. > :39:11.physically? I think I work off of that. The more scared I am

:39:12. > :39:17.internally, I feel I perform my best. I probably wouldn't show it as

:39:18. > :39:22.much. You'd know because I'd be quieter than usual! I know it works

:39:23. > :39:29.well for me. Thinking back to last year, the relay quartet. How does

:39:30. > :39:32.that taste of success change your confidence as an individual? It was

:39:33. > :39:36.breathtaking, it makes you more hungry and makes you want to perform

:39:37. > :39:43.at your best so you can have your own individual medal. I'm not saying

:39:44. > :39:46.I'm going to disregard a relay medal because it's a beautiful feeling,

:39:47. > :39:53.especially as we did it as a team. Now I've touched it, I feel like one

:39:54. > :39:56.to myself! How much do you believe you can achieve that this weekend? I

:39:57. > :40:02.can most definitely believe in myself this weekend. STUDIO: She's

:40:03. > :40:07.always got a great smile and should like to put a smile on the fans

:40:08. > :40:10.faces who have come here to cheer on the British athletes. Denise, should

:40:11. > :40:16.like to pull it out the bag and get into the final, and actually it's

:40:17. > :40:19.been said by Steve and Andrew it's a really open field, there's nobody

:40:20. > :40:24.really dominating the indoor 60 sprints for the women said it would

:40:25. > :40:27.be a shock gold but could she get amongst the medals? Should have to

:40:28. > :40:35.execute the perfect place at the moment. She's a great starter, one

:40:36. > :40:38.of the lead-off for by one. Everything has got to go right for

:40:39. > :40:42.her this weekend. She's in a good place mentally. I spoke to her in

:40:43. > :40:47.Birmingham, she was happy and looking forward to the season. It's

:40:48. > :40:55.about making sure she now is the first 30 metres and anything can

:40:56. > :41:05.happen. This is the start list the heat four. COMMENTATOR: I'm not sure

:41:06. > :41:14.listening to Asha Philip talking about needing a personal best to win

:41:15. > :41:16.the gold, she's run 7.09 before, I'm not sure that is required to win the

:41:17. > :42:12.gold here. By Rebeka Haase. She has been

:42:13. > :42:17.running well this season. We've talked about that. Equalling her

:42:18. > :42:21.season's best, her personal best. A very impressive opener from the

:42:22. > :42:27.German. Yes, German athletics hopefully is under a resurgence in

:42:28. > :42:32.women's sprinting. Let's have a look. Out of the blocks. Everything

:42:33. > :42:41.very controlled. Not really explosive but it's effective.

:42:42. > :42:46.Hitting the ground quickly. Very well. That propels her forward. You

:42:47. > :42:52.can see her moving away from the field. There's not a huge try a

:42:53. > :43:10.phrase there. It's effective and it's far it's the fastest of the

:43:11. > :43:15.morning. But was a controlled race there. That is a quick time, no

:43:16. > :43:28.doubt about that. So the automatic qualifiers.

:43:29. > :43:34.There is Asha Philip. She ran the first leg of Great Britain when they

:43:35. > :43:38.won a bronze for Great Britain. She was an Olympic medallist. She had

:43:39. > :43:42.that terrible injury, she was a trampoline -ist. She's only 26,

:43:43. > :43:49.feels like she's been around a while. She still has a great passion

:43:50. > :43:53.for trampolining and coaches kids. She was relaxed in Birmingham and

:43:54. > :44:05.always has that smile on her face. She's a great advert for the sport.

:44:06. > :44:10.She's the only female in the group now and I wondered how that would

:44:11. > :44:19.affect but she said I'm loving it, she's in a good place. Which is

:44:20. > :44:25.important for athletes. A lot of people will be surprised, good

:44:26. > :44:30.morning Toni Minichiello, a lot of people would be surprised Britain

:44:31. > :44:35.gets a bronze medal and has a rich crop coming through and we only have

:44:36. > :44:38.one female in the 60 metres. What is the thinking behind people's

:44:39. > :44:46.seasons? There's a couple of things here. I think Dina Asher-Smith would

:44:47. > :44:50.be here if she wasn't injured. This is the year after the Olympics, when

:44:51. > :44:56.you work so hard to get to the Olympics and perform it of a fallow

:44:57. > :44:59.year. You take a six months sabbatical and get yourself ready to

:45:00. > :45:03.run the Championships and everyone is looking at London and the World

:45:04. > :45:07.Championships there. Absolutely. She will be looking to that if she can

:45:08. > :45:09.get herself into the kind of shape to help Britain get going in the

:45:10. > :45:20.relay. There will be an incredible

:45:21. > :45:30.atmosphere and we look forward to them later in the year.

:45:31. > :45:44.So the fifth heat and Asha Philip -- Asha Philip in lane before.

:45:45. > :45:57.Mayer of Germany will be her main rival. Only third in the German

:45:58. > :46:11.challenge but Germany are doing well with their hurdles events as well.

:46:12. > :46:22.We had Healey running yesterday and another athletes who competed in the

:46:23. > :46:31.same event had a terrible fall in that 400 heat. But thankfully she is

:46:32. > :46:43.OK. So Asha Philip, 2014 was a big year for her. She ran that on a

:46:44. > :46:50.couple of occasions. The world indoors in Poland. She would love to

:46:51. > :46:56.rediscover that kind of form. Next to her it may well have been

:46:57. > :47:10.the Greek athlete. We will wait and see. Hopefully that is a

:47:11. > :47:21.straightforward fall start. Asha Philip, so far Haase was the one who

:47:22. > :47:28.was looking best. But she has run a couple of events at 7.09. I think

:47:29. > :47:35.that would be enough to take the gold medal. I think she could get

:47:36. > :47:41.close to that time. It is going to be all about the start. The person

:47:42. > :47:45.who runs the first 20 metres the most aggressively but also the most

:47:46. > :47:48.controlled will put a lot of pressure on everyone else. Because

:47:49. > :47:56.they know there is no clear favourite. Who can come past them.

:47:57. > :48:00.So with that in mind I think Asha Philip will know that she needs to

:48:01. > :48:05.nail a very good start. There is the red card. Her reaction time coming

:48:06. > :48:09.up on the screen. They have confidence in their system again and

:48:10. > :48:27.they have gone public. It was I think fairly obvious. I'm going to

:48:28. > :48:33.call her Rafaela. That is her first name. Not obvious from that angle

:48:34. > :48:45.but when it happened then it was fairly obvious. So in the middle

:48:46. > :48:50.lanes we have Mayer and Asha Philip. You do not think about times in the

:48:51. > :48:55.final, you get used to the starting system and get familiar with it and

:48:56. > :49:00.the track. You can use these rounds, you have got to qualify, but this

:49:01. > :49:07.all helps in terms of when the final comes.

:49:08. > :49:20.Asha Philip gets a pretty good start, away from Mayer. Mayer comes

:49:21. > :49:28.back. Not a great first time at 7.26 but got pretty well away from the

:49:29. > :49:35.blocks. Good reactions. Good pick-up and then when she's into the running

:49:36. > :49:41.then it is all over. No week to run superfast but a good start. -- no

:49:42. > :49:46.need. A very good start. The most important thing, when you put your

:49:47. > :49:49.foot down on the floor of that is when the power it can get through

:49:50. > :50:01.you and you get into that beautiful running action. Which Asha actually

:50:02. > :50:06.has. And then she can just wind down. As soon as she puts her foot

:50:07. > :50:10.down she starts to eat up the ground very quickly. She stabs her

:50:11. > :50:14.authority on the field. Everyone else is chasing. She looks far more

:50:15. > :50:17.relaxed than everyone else and moving very smoothly indeed. She

:50:18. > :50:26.glances up and says that is enough, thank you very much. It was this bit

:50:27. > :50:31.of the race, ten, 20 metres, really impressive and then she can relax

:50:32. > :50:37.through. A very good qualification. Mayer also clear and the Irish

:50:38. > :50:45.athlete taking the fourth spot, Healy. We have the semifinals and

:50:46. > :50:52.final tomorrow. So just to clear up the result and then we can speak to

:50:53. > :51:00.Asha. A personal best for the Swiss athlete in third place. And I think

:51:01. > :51:06.Asha is with us now. Great smile on your face, a fantastic start to your

:51:07. > :51:10.competition. Top four to qualify, you want to qualify in a good lane

:51:11. > :51:14.and that really did help me to win that. You have been able to ease

:51:15. > :51:20.into the competition knowing you have the rest of the day to think

:51:21. > :51:25.about the business then tomorrow? Well I'm going to go and sleep after

:51:26. > :51:31.that early start. And have enough time to recover for the next day.

:51:32. > :51:36.Not a morning person! There is a big difference! I was struggling past

:51:37. > :51:41.morning. That time difference. So I'm just going to push forward and

:51:42. > :51:44.work with the conditions. What do you think will be key to your

:51:45. > :51:50.success tomorrow, you looked so accomplished today. I do not want to

:51:51. > :51:55.just kill myself, three rounds is harder. The boys had to do it in one

:51:56. > :51:59.day but we have an extra day to recover and I'm grateful for that.

:52:00. > :52:06.But definitely good recovery and be able to compete tomorrow. The good

:52:07. > :52:11.news for Asha, only an afternoon session tomorrow so she does not

:52:12. > :52:15.have to get up to early! It makes me laugh when athletes and especially

:52:16. > :52:22.sprinters, actually, that is not fair. No athletes like mornings. But

:52:23. > :52:31.in the world of combined events, 6:30am is a lie in! At times I had

:52:32. > :52:34.to wake up at four o'clock. On our way and getting on the bus at

:52:35. > :52:39.6:30am! I was lucky enough to be involved in

:52:40. > :52:42.the London Marathon and getting a lift at five o'clock in the morning,

:52:43. > :52:47.and these athletes are getting themselves ready, they off in a

:52:48. > :52:53.couple of hours. She will be all right! But she looks good, it was a

:52:54. > :52:58.good start and she was also able to ease up. Had she managed to get,

:52:59. > :53:03.that was the false start and I think she would have gone out much better.

:53:04. > :53:08.This was OK, not the best, she can do much better. But what I love

:53:09. > :53:14.about Asha is that pick-up, it is so dynamic. She can move away from the

:53:15. > :53:17.field very quickly. But she is relaxed, doing just enough to

:53:18. > :53:22.qualify and secure the first place spot. That will give her a good lane

:53:23. > :53:32.for tomorrow, job done. Excellent work. Were you impressed? It is a

:53:33. > :53:42.confident run in the field. The 7.26 is quicker but the rest of the field

:53:43. > :53:46.did not break through 7.30 so it was a pretty soft heat. My only concern

:53:47. > :53:53.is the second part of the race. She gets out and reacts but she never

:53:54. > :53:57.gets those hips under. Her fight position is quite low so she's not

:53:58. > :54:03.apply as much force as the German girl beside her. Not hitting the

:54:04. > :54:09.floor with that same force in the second part of the race. And that is

:54:10. > :54:14.where big business and will be. She will react and put people under

:54:15. > :54:19.pressure but then others may come through if she cannot get that

:54:20. > :54:24.force. Job done here but if you want to step up you will have two address

:54:25. > :54:28.that second part of the race. Well of course it is the man in just a

:54:29. > :54:33.moment and Great Britain have three men going in the 60 metres heats.

:54:34. > :54:38.Coming in just a few moments time. But a certain British athlete who

:54:39. > :54:49.did not just dominate outside but he liked it indoors as well.

:54:50. > :55:00.Linford Christie getting ready for the final. The fastest qualifier.

:55:01. > :55:05.The start is so important, it is his weakest spot. If he gets a good one

:55:06. > :55:12.he could win. Away first time, he is away badly! Linford Christie

:55:13. > :55:19.storming through and he takes the gold medal from a standing start.

:55:20. > :55:23.The final of the European 60 metres indoor Championships. Linford

:55:24. > :55:29.Christie got away reasonably well. He comes storming through! Linford

:55:30. > :55:38.Christie wins and takes the European title.

:55:39. > :55:49.So ready for the first heat. Linford Christie, absolutely fantastic. In

:55:50. > :56:04.1994 we had Colin Jackson, he's blushing now! Look out for the young

:56:05. > :56:14.Danish talent, Hari. And it is a good start from Hari. Clutching the

:56:15. > :56:24.hamstring. That is such a shame for Hari. He is a big talent. Mancini

:56:25. > :56:33.was one of those to take advantage. It is a shame. He was the winner of

:56:34. > :56:39.the Danish indoor title, Hari. 19 years old, the world at his feet but

:56:40. > :56:41.there he has suffered, clutching his hamstring. Mancini on hand to come

:56:42. > :56:48.through. Three go through automatically. Let's take a look at

:56:49. > :56:54.the replay. Out of the blocks really well, aggressive. Worked hard for

:56:55. > :57:00.the first 20, 30 metres. Then bang, the hamstring goes. And from there

:57:01. > :57:07.on he is just frustrated. Nothing that you can do. When you hamstring

:57:08. > :57:14.goes, nothing whatsoever. A flying start as well and he was looking

:57:15. > :57:18.good. Almost 20 metres out, he was hanging on from there and almost

:57:19. > :57:21.held on for third place as well. That third place would be pointless

:57:22. > :57:25.because you know there is no way that he could come back and start

:57:26. > :57:32.again. Such a shame for the young man. So there we go, Mancini going

:57:33. > :57:36.through automatically after that misfortune for Hari.

:57:37. > :57:42.The defending European indoor champion is next, Richard Kilty. Not

:57:43. > :57:49.all plain sailing to get here, he was disqualified in the British

:57:50. > :57:54.Championships at the trial. And he might have that on his mind with

:57:55. > :57:58.these false starts here. The job of an athlete is to focus and with all

:57:59. > :58:03.the distractions going around it is not ideal but he has got a job to do

:58:04. > :58:09.and he will be mindful of that. This is a wide-open competition. There is

:58:10. > :58:15.a real opportunity for the UK to do well in this event. He is defending

:58:16. > :58:19.European champion. We have another Brit, they are very strong in

:58:20. > :58:23.Europe. And this is his moment. And he is well suited to the 60 metres

:58:24. > :58:29.indoors. He has been world champion as well and it suits his style of

:58:30. > :58:33.sprinting, but explosive style. I agree. And looking at how strong we

:58:34. > :58:41.are in Europe, eight British athletes in the top ten. And you

:58:42. > :58:46.would say definitely three in the final. I think there is a chance of

:58:47. > :58:50.one, two, three. We are about dominate in sprinting Europe. Some

:58:51. > :58:56.of the Italians could sneak a medal place but we are in the driving seat

:58:57. > :59:01.in this event. Richard Kilty, who of course reminded us in Birmingham

:59:02. > :59:07.that he became a dad last year as well, he has a new motivation. He

:59:08. > :59:11.has also changed his coaching setup, life has moved on for him in the

:59:12. > :59:15.past year. He has changed his coaching setup quite a bit over the

:59:16. > :59:21.years which is a bit unsettling. As an athlete he has grown and he is

:59:22. > :59:25.maturing and he knows what he needs. And he is well suited to the 60, he

:59:26. > :59:29.knows it is about getting out. This will set up his season very well if

:59:30. > :59:35.he can maintain his form and not think about the winning before he

:59:36. > :59:41.has actually done the running. Good advice. Steve Cram, let's see if he

:59:42. > :59:45.can get off to a good start. It is an interesting point with Richard

:59:46. > :59:50.and his starting. I was in Sheffield and there was a bit of deja vu about

:59:51. > :59:57.that little scenario at the UK Championships. He did not seem to be

:59:58. > :00:01.that bothered at the time. But here it is a different matter. World

:00:02. > :00:07.indoor champion back in 2014, do not forget that. And a great exponent of

:00:08. > :00:17.the skill of 60 metre running indoors. Andy Robinson won the UK

:00:18. > :00:21.trial and ran very well on the day. And Andy has picked his races

:00:22. > :00:27.carefully. He will be going in the fourth heat and then we have Theo

:00:28. > :00:31.Etienne. Great Britain have never had that one, two, three. Close to

:00:32. > :00:47.it a couple of times. Jason Gardner and Mark Lewis Francis

:00:48. > :01:01.12 back in 2002. -- won two back in 2002. I'll bring Colin in on this.

:01:02. > :01:08.Noted for not doing false starts! Obviously when that false start rule

:01:09. > :01:15.came in we got used to not having any false starts. The discipline of

:01:16. > :01:22.athletes changed. It is a skill, isn't it? Yes. I think the way you

:01:23. > :01:25.articulated that is correct. It's a discipline you've got to learn and

:01:26. > :01:30.you've got to practice in training as well. Even when you're doing your

:01:31. > :01:33.practice starts you should think about holding your position in the

:01:34. > :01:41.set position. Your gun is the release, that is it. You don't need

:01:42. > :01:48.to think about anything else. The only thing experience can tell, the

:01:49. > :01:55.only variable is the time from set to the gun. Every start is slightly

:01:56. > :01:58.different. Even a couple of thousands of a second is the only

:01:59. > :02:03.variable. That can be quite frustrating. In mainland Europe they

:02:04. > :02:07.seem to release you very quickly from the set position to the offer.

:02:08. > :02:11.In Britain there is more of a habit of holding you in the blocks. When

:02:12. > :02:21.you travel the globe the more races you do, the more experience you

:02:22. > :02:34.game. Menga is 29, he is only running new personal best this year.

:02:35. > :02:47.Kilty right in the middle wearing the different coloured number,

:02:48. > :03:01.deflating to -- denoting the defending champion. Kilty hasn't

:03:02. > :03:05.gone that quick this year. Let's see how he gets his campaign underway.

:03:06. > :03:13.There are three races for these men today, semifinals and then final

:03:14. > :03:21.later. Kilty gets away reasonably well with Menga alongside him. Kilty

:03:22. > :03:33.ease away. I think Volko and Menga will get the other two spots. Not

:03:34. > :03:37.his best start, it was OK and save, gives him a chance to get familiar

:03:38. > :03:47.with the starter. Moved nicely in the middle of the race. 6.61, a good

:03:48. > :03:52.start first thing in the morning. The important thing is to get it

:03:53. > :03:56.under your belt. Get on the track and perform. Richard has won this

:03:57. > :04:02.title before, he's won the world indoors title. This is his

:04:03. > :04:06.territory. He feels confident running the 60 metres. When he

:04:07. > :04:10.starts to move away he looks relaxed and controlled which has got to be

:04:11. > :04:15.the most important thing. Doesn't need to put his foot down heavily on

:04:16. > :04:18.the gas because he knows he's probably the best in the field. Once

:04:19. > :04:24.he starts moving away nobody is coming back to him. The semifinal

:04:25. > :04:28.and final will be very different. You'll have pressure all around him.

:04:29. > :04:35.But he's done it before and I'm sure he's capable of doing again. Surely

:04:36. > :04:40.he's thinking, I'm just cruising this, the last bit. I don't know why

:04:41. > :04:44.he's so stressed about the crop. We're always looking to see how fast

:04:45. > :05:08.we are going -- clock. Richard, a job well done. You've

:05:09. > :05:12.been had time and again and won the big medal. Ahead of a race like that

:05:13. > :05:18.do you feel there is an aura around you? Definitely, coming into the

:05:19. > :05:25.European champion, there's a bit of an aura that comes with it. Tell me

:05:26. > :05:28.about the starts. You've probably seen and heard what was happening

:05:29. > :05:34.here yesterday with the problematic starts, did that play on your mind

:05:35. > :05:39.ahead of the race? I was warned of it, I sat in the blocks and was

:05:40. > :05:44.probably the last one out. I've got the confidence that I can come

:05:45. > :05:48.through. I pulled through nice and comfortable. It was job done, no

:05:49. > :05:53.issues for me today. More to come for you later but you've got three

:05:54. > :05:58.races in a day. How tough can that be? Really tricky, the last two

:05:59. > :06:03.Championships I've been to, there's been a heat on the first day then

:06:04. > :06:08.semifinals the next day. It's a bit tricky, I'll go back, watch a movie,

:06:09. > :06:12.have a nap, get some food, speak to the family and comeback nice and

:06:13. > :06:17.relaxed. Looking forward to getting back here this evening. You are a

:06:18. > :06:25.dad, how has that changed life? It's amazing, I'm engaged to my fiancee

:06:26. > :06:30.now. Got a little baby, hello to those guys back home. I love you

:06:31. > :06:34.both. My family, my mum, my dad, my brothers and sisters, my nieces and

:06:35. > :06:41.nephews, everyone cheering at home, it gives me extra motivation to make

:06:42. > :06:50.them all proud, especially carrying the same name as my little boy, he's

:06:51. > :06:55.my motivation now. His fiancee is a Lithuanian triple jumper. Richard

:06:56. > :06:59.Junior has got some good sporting jeans. He's very confident when his

:07:00. > :07:05.indoors, Richard, and he feels like keys to the manner born. He did a

:07:06. > :07:10.little number one signed to the camera and you like that. I like

:07:11. > :07:15.that. Richard is a very passionate individual and that's a great

:07:16. > :07:20.strength in this environment. He can be -- it can be a weakness, at the

:07:21. > :07:24.British championships you saw how distracted he can be buy something.

:07:25. > :07:35.I think you'll be focused. He's got to be the favourite to win this.

:07:36. > :07:40.He's in good shape. His big opposition will come from the Brits,

:07:41. > :07:45.Robertson and Etienne. This is like a national Championships. Let's have

:07:46. > :07:50.a look at Theo Etienne. He burst onto the scene last year, he's was

:07:51. > :07:55.reserved for the World Indoors, he's five foot one of the shortest

:07:56. > :08:01.sprinters in world sprinting. -- he is five foot four. I don't know much

:08:02. > :08:08.about him either. Diminutive figure. That's a great time, his personal

:08:09. > :08:13.best. He's right up there. He could, if he keeps his head, this is a big

:08:14. > :08:19.deal for him. Don't underestimate how it impacts a young athlete.

:08:20. > :08:23.He'll never have been in the situation before. If he can manage

:08:24. > :08:28.all that, the smile suggests he's quite nervous as well. He should be

:08:29. > :08:32.fine. Just get this heat out of the way and let's have a look at his

:08:33. > :08:36.technique. He's adding a bit of height with his hairdo! It reminds

:08:37. > :08:42.me of the footballer Jason Roberts. He looks relaxed but it's all very

:08:43. > :08:47.new for him. If you come to a championships like that, don't over

:08:48. > :08:50.respect the opposition. You are one of the fastest in Europe and you

:08:51. > :08:58.deserve to be held. He just needs to get out there. He's coached by Ryan

:08:59. > :09:02.Freckleton who is one of the leading sprint coaches now. He'll understand

:09:03. > :09:09.it. The thing is, get out there and run. Let's get out there with Andrew

:09:10. > :09:15.Cotter and Colin. COMMENTATOR: There is the start list. Theo Etienne in

:09:16. > :09:25.lane four. He'll have good competition from Rodriguez and Rene

:09:26. > :09:37.on either side. Most of the sprinters tower over him but he is a

:09:38. > :09:44.flyer. Austin Hamilton, the 19-year-old from Sweden is in six.

:09:45. > :09:55.Clear a good start by Etienne. Etienne is

:09:56. > :10:03.flying down the track, takes the victory. Good run also from

:10:04. > :10:09.Hamilton. Etienne, there is a determined look on his face.

:10:10. > :10:14.Etienne, 6.64, and there is talk of a possible British one, two, three.

:10:15. > :10:17.We talked about him being a youngster and perhaps the thing he

:10:18. > :10:22.will have to deal with is going through the rounds and dealing with

:10:23. > :10:27.three races in one day. He's shown himself to be pretty composed and

:10:28. > :10:33.strong in the first of those races. Yes, the strength of British

:10:34. > :10:37.sprinting means that when you are qualifying you are under a lot of

:10:38. > :10:44.pressure. You've got to qualify for our team. Dealing with pressure and

:10:45. > :10:49.handling it all, by now he's used this. He's really sharp out of the

:10:50. > :10:57.blocks. Aggressive, good cadence, which is ultimately what you need

:10:58. > :11:03.over the 60 metres. Pushing on. You can achieve that by getting a good

:11:04. > :11:07.left both in front and extension at the back. That will increase your

:11:08. > :11:12.range. Ultimately eat up as much ground as you possibly can. When

:11:13. > :11:16.you're reasonably short, you need to maximise that stride length. He's

:11:17. > :11:26.good, he's powerful and he's been rewarded with that 6.62 and Victor

:11:27. > :11:30.E. Good performance. Well done. Tell me the nerves that the start on this

:11:31. > :11:35.kind of occasion for you. I was quite nervous at first, but you've

:11:36. > :11:39.got to treat it like any other race, to be honest. I was happy to get it

:11:40. > :11:44.over and done with. Go back, recover and get ready for the semi. We were

:11:45. > :11:48.talking to Richard about three races in a day potentially, how does that

:11:49. > :11:53.affect your preparations? You need to learn how to recover properly.

:11:54. > :11:56.You've got to make sure you don't mess about, you get back, keep your

:11:57. > :12:01.head down and keep focused really. You were a reserve for the team in

:12:02. > :12:06.the World Indoors last year, how much has that helped you coming

:12:07. > :12:09.here, to have the taste of what the environment is like? I'm really

:12:10. > :12:14.happy to be hair. I was disappointed not to go to Portland but everything

:12:15. > :12:18.happens for a reason. I'm here now and hopefully I can perform for

:12:19. > :12:22.everyone out. Tell me about the support you're getting from Richard,

:12:23. > :12:28.and the general team and how they've been helping you. They've been

:12:29. > :12:31.giving me advice, don't play with any of these mind games, do your

:12:32. > :12:40.thing and you'll be fine at the end of the day. All the best. STUDIO:

:12:41. > :12:51.Keeps it simple and job done, his time has been rounded down to 6.62.

:12:52. > :12:57.How exciting to be a young athlete and experiencing this for the first

:12:58. > :13:05.time, performing where it matters, not having any regrets. Making

:13:06. > :13:09.something of a name of himself. I loved his interviewing. It showed a

:13:10. > :13:14.bit about his personality. Very relaxed, knows what he's got to do.

:13:15. > :13:20.Very mature attitude. Don't mess about, he said. Also knowing how to

:13:21. > :13:22.manage yourself in between these rounds is very important, especially

:13:23. > :13:28.when you're not used to it. Excellent interviewing. He's got

:13:29. > :13:34.swagger which is nice. His running style, he's leaving his foot on the

:13:35. > :13:38.floor a bit too long. He's running completely through the tie which

:13:39. > :13:41.means he's over striding up front. Because of that big open stride it's

:13:42. > :13:50.got a bit of a braking effect before you get your hips over the top. If

:13:51. > :14:00.he tidies that up... Toni said earlier that British men's sprinting

:14:01. > :14:04.is really strong at the moment. His swaggering a bit there, it's

:14:05. > :14:09.contagious! Rightly so. They are good. They know what is at stake

:14:10. > :14:12.here. He's been running really well indoors this season. If he doesn't

:14:13. > :14:18.believe he can raise his game then he's no business being here. I think

:14:19. > :14:22.he could surprise a few people here at this Championships. Some of these

:14:23. > :14:27.guys have something to prove with not going to the Olympics. This is

:14:28. > :14:32.their time. His first sport was rugby but he's very much a sprinter

:14:33. > :14:38.now. British indoor champion, Andrew Robertson. Let's get over to Steve

:14:39. > :14:42.Cram. COMMENTATOR: Interesting competition to Andrew Robertson.

:14:43. > :14:46.He's in great shape, he's got to convert those really good runs he

:14:47. > :14:50.does in Sheffield. He set his personal best there last year before

:14:51. > :14:55.going to the World Indoors where he didn't run as quickly. He doesn't

:14:56. > :15:01.want that to be the case this year. He's coached by his dad Sam and he's

:15:02. > :15:07.in great shape. Very confident. A good starter, you have to be to run

:15:08. > :15:13.the 60. You want him to come into the big race arena and convert that

:15:14. > :15:17.potential that he shows up Sheffield into a championship performance. He

:15:18. > :15:22.doesn't want to leave his fastest time of the year at home, as it

:15:23. > :15:24.were. Every opportunity for Andy Robertson, come the final. First

:15:25. > :15:44.he's got to get through here. There is the top three. We thought

:15:45. > :15:51.of years ago that Tumi was going to be a cracking runner. Molinari from

:15:52. > :15:56.San Marino. So probably Tumi, again another typical 60 metre runner.

:15:57. > :16:01.Rose in lane three comic equalled his personal best this year.

:16:02. > :16:09.Robertson has not been beaten this year on all of his races. He did not

:16:10. > :16:13.go to the Birmingham Grand Prix, did not need to, he had guaranteed

:16:14. > :16:18.selection of the British Championships. Not such a good

:16:19. > :16:26.start. Rose gets away really well. He's just going to stick this one

:16:27. > :16:36.ahead of Tumi. Some names you can explode out of the box. I'm hoping

:16:37. > :16:49.that was safe for Andrew Robertson. The safe thing to do is to stay in

:16:50. > :17:01.the blocks. He came out, got into his running nicely and got past the

:17:02. > :17:06.fast starting Rose. So we have three through. You need to brush off the

:17:07. > :17:11.cobwebs. Your British champion, under a bit of pressure in that

:17:12. > :17:15.sense. And he got caught sleeping a little bit on the blocks. But when

:17:16. > :17:19.you're a good enough, you will qualify and he certainly is. The man

:17:20. > :17:25.everyone is looking at anti-qualified very comfortably. Out

:17:26. > :17:30.of the blocks, even though you take up the reaction and look at what he

:17:31. > :17:34.does when he hit the floor. That is important, that is when you generate

:17:35. > :17:39.power. You're going through all those bases in 60 metres running and

:17:40. > :17:46.he seems to do that very well. He is British champion, this is his big

:17:47. > :17:51.opportunity. He is coming into this competition knowing that he is

:17:52. > :17:59.capable. We are keeping our fingers crossed because this is the

:18:00. > :18:02.semifinals. Well done, Andrew, we were talking

:18:03. > :18:10.about the start and the Finnish combine. I think I missed about ten

:18:11. > :18:14.in the start with the reaction. But I am in really good shape and

:18:15. > :18:20.confident for the events today, really happy. We know you are an

:18:21. > :18:24.explosive start, with the shenanigans going on yesterday at

:18:25. > :18:30.the warnings you had, did that affect you today? Not really. I was

:18:31. > :18:34.watching the TV and I thought what was going on but it gives you the

:18:35. > :18:39.mindset to concentrate on yourself. And winning yesterday was motivation

:18:40. > :18:43.as well. It was in the back of my mind but not distracting. And you

:18:44. > :18:47.have three guys here, all representing Great Britain so

:18:48. > :18:52.proudly, all pushing each other, you all want those medals and it could

:18:53. > :18:59.be potential one, two, three. It is definitely not a given but I have

:19:00. > :19:04.been racing Richard Kilty since I was in use. It is going to be a race

:19:05. > :19:13.to watch, that is for sure. Looking forward to it. Thank you.

:19:14. > :19:16.It is going to be interesting. The British rivalry starting to come

:19:17. > :19:25.through. They will be back this evening but he's safely through. His

:19:26. > :19:30.reaction time 0.71 but that is understandable. They will have to be

:19:31. > :19:35.sharper in the semifinals. So we have semifinals and then the final

:19:36. > :19:42.right at the end this evening. So it is Richard Kilty, Andrew Robertson

:19:43. > :19:46.and feel Essien. The times are relevant, it was three wins and

:19:47. > :19:54.looking very impressive. So those are the 16 men through to the

:19:55. > :19:58.semifinals. The multi-inventors have moved from

:19:59. > :20:09.the 60 metres across to the second event of this heptathlon. The long

:20:10. > :20:19.jump. Samuelsson of Sweden, the first attempt. They get three each.

:20:20. > :20:30.Over seven metres for Samuelsson. A decent start for him. 22 years of

:20:31. > :20:37.age. He is in the form and certainly one to watch. A good discipline as

:20:38. > :20:58.well. Very clean. Showing good composure. 7.40 his season best,

:20:59. > :21:05.Samuelsson. Urena takes his first attempt in the long jump. He hit the

:21:06. > :21:14.ball hard, you could hear that. Really attacked it well. Urena

:21:15. > :21:24.trying to convert that speed, he does not look impressive. Look at

:21:25. > :21:28.that, that has cost him. He did not get the lift that he would have

:21:29. > :21:38.expected. But wait for the measurement.

:21:39. > :21:49.It is 7.37 for Urena. A decent first attempt despite the distance behind

:21:50. > :21:52.the board. Ashley Bryant has been jiggling around, doing his drills,

:21:53. > :22:05.looking to get support from the crowd. He ran a lifetime best in the

:22:06. > :22:11.60s. Just to remind you. 7.06. Faster than he ran at the end of

:22:12. > :22:18.January in the Czech Republic when he put together a really healthy

:22:19. > :22:27.heptathlon. Anything in excess of 7.50 would be great. Is it a white

:22:28. > :22:33.flag? It is. Right, then. This is a really good start for Ashley Bryant.

:22:34. > :22:37.Just made a slight adjustment but continued with the momentum, the

:22:38. > :22:45.speed. Space to spare. Wherever this is measured, it is worth a bit more.

:22:46. > :22:56.Tim topped were we should mention, a British record-holder. A very good

:22:57. > :22:59.start at 7.60, taking the into the lead overall.

:23:00. > :23:04.And that is a Captain Charisma performance, in the second place

:23:05. > :23:07.overall after two events at a great start to the day. A really good

:23:08. > :23:13.start. It is about keeping that positive mental frame. He is in good

:23:14. > :23:17.form and contrast his body, but just go through the motions but really

:23:18. > :23:22.trying to get the maximum out of himself. And second so far is really

:23:23. > :23:25.good. We will be leaving BBC Two in about eight minutes and going onto

:23:26. > :23:31.the red Button, with qualifying for the men's high jump and women's long

:23:32. > :23:42.jump amongst other things. Jazmin Sawyers going in the long jump

:23:43. > :23:48.qualification along with Lorraine Ugen. She's very much in amongst it

:23:49. > :23:53.in Belgrade. Really looking forward to seeing you compete, Jazmin. Do

:23:54. > :23:57.you love it as much as it appears? I really do, competing is my favourite

:23:58. > :24:03.thing to do. Training is great but it is not competing at

:24:04. > :24:09.Championships, that is what I'm here for. I love to compete. When I get

:24:10. > :24:13.out in the full stadium and you have expectation, people watching, I love

:24:14. > :24:17.it. I feel it is the performance and I can have fun with it. It is a

:24:18. > :24:21.chance finally to show how the training has been going and show

:24:22. > :24:24.everyone what we have been working on. You absolutely thrive when

:24:25. > :24:34.pressure is on, when the spotlight is on. Where did it come from? I

:24:35. > :24:38.think my love for competing under pressure probably comes from

:24:39. > :24:42.performing on stage as a kid and kind of having that spotlight on.

:24:43. > :24:46.And going right now you need to perform and put together everything

:24:47. > :24:50.you have worked for, remember all your lines. I think that is

:24:51. > :24:55.transferred over. Either that or I am just that kind of person, but

:24:56. > :25:03.competing on bigger stages with more pressure is where I feel I come

:25:04. > :25:08.alive. Ivana Spanovic is coming in as a Brit of course and her posters

:25:09. > :25:12.are everywhere. Her face is everywhere, you cannot get away from

:25:13. > :25:16.her in Belgrade! How do you feel thing that? It is nice, she's a

:25:17. > :25:19.friend, and one of the friendliest people on the circuit. Seeing how

:25:20. > :25:24.popular she's here it is nice to see that nice to see there is a place

:25:25. > :25:28.that celebrates long jump so much and is so excited by that. It is

:25:29. > :25:34.hard for the country not to get excited about that with someone so

:25:35. > :25:38.famous. So when I see Ivana Spanovic everywhere I think this is going to

:25:39. > :25:43.be a great competition because everyone is looking forward to it.

:25:44. > :25:46.So she is a friend, but you want to win? Of course. A lot of girls in

:25:47. > :25:53.the competition are friends but it does not mean you do not want to

:25:54. > :25:55.beat them. The friendship is there but competition is more important. I

:25:56. > :25:59.come to every championship, to win. I do not think you should set your

:26:00. > :26:07.sights any lower. I want a personal best and I would like to think I

:26:08. > :26:13.could really push it. We will see. Bobsleigh competitor, singer, long

:26:14. > :26:23.jumper, a really talented woman. Welcome to Steve Cram. It is a rich

:26:24. > :26:36.time for British women past night long jumping. It is a good time, and

:26:37. > :26:39.it is tough to get into the team. That I think generates about high

:26:40. > :26:44.level of performance. It will be interesting, it is a bouncy runway

:26:45. > :26:49.and they helped athletes struggled in the first round. But also that

:26:50. > :26:53.three metre which changes the most visually as you are running in.

:26:54. > :26:59.Basanta bit further away than it normally is. They need to get used

:27:00. > :27:06.to that and then it should be fine. And also pushing for the medals will

:27:07. > :27:09.be Lorraine Ugen. I think she overly said she sometimes things she does

:27:10. > :27:14.not get the attention but she deserves. She is a very good,

:27:15. > :27:19.world-class long jumper. Jazmin gets all the attention because of the

:27:20. > :27:23.other things that she is doing. Shara Proctor is a different

:27:24. > :27:29.character again. But I think Lorraine has a good chance. Ivana

:27:30. > :27:32.Spanovic is the one to beat. It will be a cracking atmosphere on Sunday

:27:33. > :27:37.with their local hero, Ivana Spanovic. Let's talk about Laura

:27:38. > :27:43.Muir, we are coming up to a really brilliant afternoon of athletics.

:27:44. > :27:48.Ten gold medals up for grabs. She is going to win. That will be one to

:27:49. > :27:53.watch. Going to win. That is the build-up to that Don! Laura is in

:27:54. > :27:58.the shape of her life. There is some decent people in there but she will

:27:59. > :28:09.win. I do not know what else you want me to say! Well be there at

:28:10. > :28:19.6:45pm. A really exciting race to watch. Absolutely. Nielsen is gutsy

:28:20. > :28:24.and she will be prepared to take it on. She's got to be brave and bold.

:28:25. > :28:30.Thank you very much. We are going onto the Red Button. Steve Cram is

:28:31. > :28:35.going to get a copy for everyone! The athletes preparing for the

:28:36. > :28:49.qualifiers, mainly in the jobs. See you shortly on the Red Button.

:28:50. > :28:57.# Jump! Great to see Robbie Grabarz back in

:28:58. > :28:58.action. Absolutely superb performance for

:28:59. > :29:00.Ivana Spanovic. Oh, the dragon.

:29:01. > :29:02.Dylan Thomas. Richard Burton.

:29:03. > :29:05.Barry Island.
