:00:48. > :00:51.Good afternoon. Welcome to a very wet Stockholm four day two of the

:00:51. > :00:55.European Championships. Headlines yesterday were dominated by that

:00:55. > :00:58.rarest of birds, the tweeting triple jumper. When the action got

:00:58. > :01:01.under way there was plenty to celebrate including a captain's

:01:01. > :01:06.performance from Dai Greene in the hurdles and a championship record

:01:06. > :01:15.from the men's sprint relay team. Player of the day went to a fleet

:01:15. > :01:25.footage Frenchman. Greene is going to take it! It's going to be 12

:01:25. > :01:37.

:01:37. > :01:47.points for Great Britain! France Jenny Meadows, in second. He could

:01:47. > :01:58.

:01:58. > :02:02.Eight. Well. Absolutely cracking. - much today. There were great

:02:02. > :02:06.individual performances, but don't forget is is all about the team.

:02:06. > :02:10.Germany are clearing second. Great Britain and Northern Ireland out up

:02:10. > :02:15.to third. The women's relay team have been disqualified, but they've

:02:15. > :02:18.been reinstated. That going to be the story of day two. Great Britain

:02:18. > :02:23.and Northern Ireland against the Ukraine for a third place. There

:02:23. > :02:26.are plenty of British stars to look forward to. In the men's sprint

:02:26. > :02:36.hurdles, it's the European and Commonwealth champion Andy Turnell

:02:36. > :02:42.

:02:42. > :02:45.going for three in a row at the European indoor silver-medallist

:02:46. > :02:52.Tiffany Ofili-Porter. She's already broken the European record this

:02:52. > :02:54.summer. Is the 5000 metres for Helen Clitheroe today as she

:02:55. > :03:04.continues to show all of the qualities of a vintage red wine.

:03:05. > :03:44.

:03:44. > :03:48.She just keeps getting better and A massive change in the weather

:03:48. > :03:56.from yesterday, Denise has her coat on because it is very cold, as has

:03:56. > :04:06.Colin. A bit of irony, Jess 10 x has just made a brilliant long jump

:04:06. > :04:09.It was a genuinely strong performance yesterday, the most

:04:09. > :04:13.significant thing for Christophe Lemaitre is his actual start. He's

:04:13. > :04:18.far more consistent out of the blocks, which puts itself and the

:04:18. > :04:23.right position, at 30 and 40 metres, to move away. He demonstrated

:04:23. > :04:26.easily, he pulled away from Dwain with majestic ease. Of course, a

:04:26. > :04:30.new French record, a perfect start for him. It's getting to the sort

:04:30. > :04:35.of times now when he might start putting a doubt in the mind of some

:04:35. > :04:39.of the top Jamaicans and Americans? Consistency is key. If he's run

:04:39. > :04:42.that type of performance now, when he gets in stronger, I think he

:04:42. > :04:46.really believes he's better than Du'aine. Nine out of 10 times he

:04:46. > :04:52.will be 10. You wouldn't be that up for it. But when you get to the

:04:52. > :04:57.world class athletes like Usain Bolt, when he's a bit more edgy,

:04:57. > :05:04.perhaps we should see what he can do. Maybe he could get to was that

:05:05. > :05:08.European record, that magical 9.90, instead of 10.0. One performers

:05:08. > :05:13.that caught your eye was Goldie Sayers in the javelin? She did

:05:13. > :05:19.remarkably well. She had a serious back injury, almost career-

:05:19. > :05:23.threatening. She's done so well to recover. Knee surgery, four weeks

:05:23. > :05:28.before, sorry, 10 weeks before this championships. She's come out here

:05:28. > :05:31.and thrown a fantastic throw in the javelin. She beat the Olympic

:05:31. > :05:36.champion and the world record holder. It bodes well for her this

:05:36. > :05:39.season. Steve Cram is in the commentary box. Good afternoon. One

:05:39. > :05:42.of the duties of the European team championships is that we focus on

:05:42. > :05:49.performances that perhaps we wouldn't do ordinarily. Andy

:05:49. > :05:54.Burnham and Stevie Stockton were great examples of that. We had four

:05:54. > :05:57.distance runners that came in for their senior debuts. If you at

:05:57. > :06:02.Ellis McColgan, she did very well in the steeplechase. In the 400

:06:02. > :06:05.metres, we got third. It's tough to come into this environment if you

:06:05. > :06:08.never been in the senior team before. The team meeting we heard a

:06:08. > :06:11.lot about, Charles van Commenee, he's been facing the more and

:06:11. > :06:15.saying, how many points are you going to get for the team? That's

:06:15. > :06:19.not usually what athletes have to face. I think they all equipped

:06:19. > :06:23.themselves very well. That's what a shabby jet out about. Some strange

:06:23. > :06:28.names will maybe not familiar with, coming in and doing a good job.

:06:28. > :06:32.name win a lot about his Jenny Meadows. A good run yesterday. You

:06:32. > :06:36.were rather critical of her tactics, you thought she might have gone a

:06:36. > :06:40.little bit earlier. With the benefit of sleeping on it, what did

:06:40. > :06:46.you make of the performance? wasn't critical, Jonathan! When you

:06:46. > :06:51.are running against people like that, people that have beaten every

:06:51. > :06:56.time, the one-time she got ahead of her was in the world championships.

:06:56. > :06:59.In a race like this, Jenny is always trying to learn and develop.

:06:59. > :07:08.That's what I love about her. She tries to get herself as many

:07:08. > :07:12.options as possible. I think she said in the interview that she

:07:12. > :07:18.thought about doing it. When the Buderus girl was slowing down, the

:07:18. > :07:28.field will gather on York shoulder. Maybe she should have passed on a

:07:28. > :07:33.

:07:33. > :07:37.little bit Ilya. Maybe ask some Dai Greene is developing into a

:07:37. > :07:42.world-class athlete. Absolutely, he believes in himself now. That

:07:42. > :07:45.paramount if you are going to have real success in the sport. I asked

:07:45. > :07:49.how he was feeling this morning and if the race went to plan, he said,

:07:49. > :07:54.yes, he was very solid and consistent and delivered the

:07:54. > :07:57.performance he expected. The splits he ran the race in said he was a

:07:57. > :08:00.little bit hold himself back, just a little bit, which is absolutely

:08:00. > :08:05.what is necessary in these circumstances. Remember, it's about

:08:06. > :08:09.points. When you look in world terms, hurdles are normally

:08:09. > :08:14.dominated by the Americans, nobody is really setting the world alight

:08:14. > :08:19.yet in that event. There is an opportunity? The South African has

:08:19. > :08:27.gone under 14 seconds on numerous occasions. He's done that in South

:08:27. > :08:30.Africa. When you come to Europe, it's where the real athletics begin.

:08:30. > :08:36.There is a real opportunity, I believe, for him to come through

:08:36. > :08:42.this year. You know, for him, it could be in Daegu. That would set

:08:42. > :08:45.him up wonderfully for a big event next year. He got the team of to a

:08:45. > :08:49.fantastic start yesterday. We are hoping for the same from Andy

:08:49. > :08:53.Turner. His first up in the 100- metre hurdles. He spoke to Steve

:08:53. > :08:56.Cram on Friday. This is familiar territory for you,

:08:56. > :09:00.the European Championships, an event that some athletes decide not

:09:00. > :09:05.to take part in. It's one that you seem to enjoy? It is what I started

:09:05. > :09:13.my career. 2003 is my first-ever senior international. It was the

:09:13. > :09:18.European Cup at them. I got hooked on the Biden of it. Is the one time

:09:18. > :09:23.that it is a really big event. Every event counts. The pressure is

:09:23. > :09:28.on. I kind of like that pressure. Season so far? It started quite

:09:28. > :09:35.well, I know you had some injury problems. How did you assess that?

:09:36. > :09:39.I'm relatively happy with it. For the time being, I'm trying to be

:09:39. > :09:44.the best with the best in the world. Them are three boys out there about

:09:44. > :09:48.ahead of everybody. It's racing the likes of those guys that is going

:09:48. > :09:53.to bring me on as an athlete. I'm happy with where I am at the moment.

:09:53. > :09:57.Hopefully, come Daegu, it will fall into place. If we bring the focus

:09:57. > :10:03.back to Europe, which is why we are here, it's a different situation,

:10:03. > :10:08.top dog in Europe. That is something you want to maintain?

:10:08. > :10:14.Yeah, nobody has called me the top dog in Europe before. I kinda like

:10:14. > :10:17.that! I'm going into this race the favourite. I've got high

:10:17. > :10:22.expectations of myself. Other people are expecting me to win on

:10:22. > :10:29.Sunday. You know, that is my target. I'm looking to go there and I am

:10:29. > :10:33.looking to... Not only when, I want As you can see, horrible weather

:10:33. > :10:36.conditions in Stockholm. I welcomed that Steve Lewis is not looking

:10:36. > :10:40.forward to the pole vaulting conditions. They have decided to

:10:40. > :10:45.move the event indoors. We will not see any coverage. Sorry for that.

:10:45. > :10:51.We will bring you the result. I think that a wise decision. It's a

:10:51. > :10:55.dangerous event at the best of times. No such luck for the

:10:55. > :11:00.hurdlers. They come and run whatever the weather. Andy Turner,

:11:00. > :11:10.as he said, a lot of pressure on him. Steve Cram, I've spoken to him

:11:10. > :11:12.

:11:12. > :11:15.in the commentary box, also good a cracking start on the track

:11:15. > :11:20.yesterday. The former British team captain, European champion,

:11:20. > :11:25.Commonwealth champion as well. Let's hope he can do the same.

:11:25. > :11:29.There has been a previous heat. This is the accumulation of two

:11:29. > :11:34.heats. We were looking a particular for the Ukrainian, third from the

:11:34. > :11:41.left hand side of the screen, they are our closest rivals in the team

:11:41. > :11:48.chase. It was Jackson Quinonez he came away for Spain, with a

:11:48. > :11:54.season's best. And Serhiy Kopanayko finished last, the Ukrainian. He is

:11:54. > :12:02.dead last as we head towards heat number two. Andy Turner, second

:12:02. > :12:08.from the left hand side, he is the fastest man on paper. He is looking

:12:08. > :12:11.deadly serious. That is a stare right down all of the 10 barriers.

:12:11. > :12:14.He is determined to produce maximum points for Great Britain. He's in

:12:14. > :12:21.very good form. He has come within a whisker of equalling his lifetime

:12:21. > :12:27.best, which she set back in 2007 this year. He's had some good races.

:12:27. > :12:37.His last outing finished 4th in the Oslo league. That was in bad

:12:37. > :12:51.

:12:51. > :12:57.conditions as well. That is the 36 this year. Eric Balnuweit is the

:12:57. > :13:06.German Under 23 champion. Constance in Sheldon of, some good youngsters

:13:06. > :13:16.here. -- Konstantin Shabanov. European champions, well-known to

:13:16. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:26.Andy Turner. On paper, his closest rival, Garfield Darien. Artur Noga.

:13:26. > :13:31.Beijing finalist. That was in his first year as a senior athlete.

:13:31. > :13:38.Andy Turner, well on top of the European rankings this year.

:13:38. > :13:44.Garfield Darien of France is third place in the European rankings. It

:13:44. > :13:48.is wet, it is windy. But Andy is used to these conditions. As you

:13:49. > :13:56.can imagine, coming down and landing at speed of those hurdles

:13:56. > :13:59.when the track is damp is a very tricky skill to master. Andy Turner,

:14:00. > :14:09.going for his third consecutive victory in his European team

:14:10. > :14:28.

:14:28. > :14:33.was being chased by Garfield Darien of France. But at a great start for

:14:33. > :14:38.Great Britain. Look at a headwind, minus two 0.4 metres per second.

:14:38. > :14:43.Time was not the issue. The victory was important. He made absolutely

:14:43. > :14:49.no mistakes. He almost needed windscreen wipers to see his way

:14:49. > :14:53.I think he knew he was ahead and thought, I just got to get across

:14:53. > :14:56.safely. The only thing that was going to beat him was himself

:14:57. > :15:02.hitting one of the hurdles. Difficult conditions for of the

:15:02. > :15:06.hurdlers. He got out well. Artur Noga was alongside him, they have

:15:06. > :15:10.got opposite lead legs, said that could have been a issue. That is a

:15:10. > :15:20.lot further ahead of him and he would have been three years ago. A

:15:20. > :15:25.

:15:25. > :15:31.13.64, although the stadium clock it differently. We will confirm all

:15:31. > :15:35.that later on, but, given the conditions, that was good by Andy

:15:35. > :15:42.Turner. Yes, these are very difficult conditions. When you

:15:42. > :15:46.throw your lead leg, there is a lot of water that comes up towards your

:15:46. > :15:51.face and it is difficult to see and control what is going on around do

:15:51. > :15:55.but he handled this very well indeed. He looks smooth, he looks

:15:55. > :15:58.confident in his hurdling right now and it is good to see. We have

:15:58. > :16:08.always known he is the best in Europe, there is no doubt about

:16:08. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:16.that. Good luck to him. Next on track, it is at the women's 200m.

:16:16. > :16:26.If ever an athlete has been hindered by injury it is Abi

:16:26. > :16:36.

:16:36. > :16:46.Shara Proctor getting her first outdoor best for Great Britain. And

:16:46. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :16:59.it could be good enough to threaten Proctor coming into this season

:16:59. > :17:04.with a personal best of six metres 81. Clearly, in these conditions,

:17:04. > :17:09.not going to be in that type of region. But it is good enough for

:17:09. > :17:14.the lead. A strong tailwind, she goes into first place. They were a

:17:14. > :17:24.few gremlins with our pictures earlier, but this is Abi Oyepitan,

:17:24. > :17:25.

:17:25. > :17:34.she goes in the women's 200m and that his next stop on track. -- is

:17:34. > :17:38.next on track. Andy with me now. You delivered perfectly. Yes, my

:17:38. > :17:45.coach said nothing less than 12. I came into this race confidently

:17:45. > :17:51.with my season's bests so I felt good. Obviously the conditions were

:17:51. > :17:56.tough today so I am just glad to keep Charles happy. A everyone

:17:56. > :18:02.wants to do that, except Phillips Idowu that is! It was miserable in

:18:02. > :18:08.Oslo as well. Yes, the conditions were really tough today. A lot of

:18:08. > :18:13.rain, and the head wind as well. I just want to get a good condition

:18:13. > :18:18.where I can do a race like that, and I am confident my personal best

:18:18. > :18:23.is going to go. It is annoying me now to be honest, I just want to

:18:23. > :18:28.get rid of it so I can concentrate on getting out there. A quick one

:18:28. > :18:33.on the injury. In Oslo you said you had an injection. Yes, I had a

:18:33. > :18:37.cortisone injection in my ankle. That seems to have knocked it out,

:18:38. > :18:43.and I am feeling good now. I am literally pain-free, the first time

:18:43. > :18:48.in a long time, and I think it is showing in my results. If I hadn't

:18:48. > :18:52.had that injection, this would have been the same as previously because

:18:52. > :18:59.it never loosens off in this weather. Without that injection I

:18:59. > :19:07.would have been in trouble. Well done. Happy Father's Day, Dad.

:19:07. > :19:13.certainly was well done. The time has been cleared up now. His time

:19:13. > :19:23.is actually faster than we gave it in the first place, 13.42, very

:19:23. > :19:45.

:19:45. > :19:50.good news for us from a points jump, Carolina Kluft. And that

:19:50. > :19:54.looks as though it will be a new third place. She likes it. As she

:19:54. > :20:00.explained to Jonathan Edwards yesterday, her reasons for no

:20:00. > :20:06.longer competing as a heptathlete where she was imperious. Three-

:20:06. > :20:10.times world champion, Olympic champion in Athens, Supreme malty

:20:10. > :20:17.inventor now concentrating solely on the long jump and her effort

:20:17. > :20:22.looks to be good enough to take the lead for her country. Indeed it is,

:20:22. > :20:27.while celebrations and a season's best for her. For a little bit

:20:27. > :20:32.earlier we had the men's hammer and Ronald McIntosh can tell us what

:20:32. > :20:36.happened in that. It was Gray's choirs and squally

:20:36. > :20:45.showers that provided the backdrop, in stark contrast to yesterday, but

:20:45. > :20:49.that didn't dampen what was a cracking competition. 79 metres 28,

:20:49. > :20:57.he knew it was good as soon as it left his hand and that was maximum

:20:58. > :21:07.points for Germany. Three personal bests for this athlete, who came in

:21:08. > :21:10.

:21:10. > :21:14.second place. 11 points for Poland. It was the Ukrainian who took third

:21:14. > :21:20.place with this second round effort of 76 metres 96, a personal best

:21:20. > :21:26.for him as well. The hammer throw is making good use of the fast

:21:26. > :21:32.circle. Representing Great Britain was Andy Frost, he came into this

:21:32. > :21:36.competition with a season's best of close to 73 metres, but after a

:21:36. > :21:43.foul in the first round opted for safety making sure he got a throw

:21:43. > :21:53.in. That was way down on his season's best, 61.53. Two points,

:21:53. > :21:57.as he was predicted. The Portuguese Thrower had reached no throws.

:21:57. > :22:02.There was no rhythm, no acceleration and ultimately no

:22:02. > :22:07.distance for Andy Frost. Only 61 metres, one of his worst

:22:07. > :22:17.performances ever wearing a British vest. There are the result of the

:22:17. > :22:38.

:22:38. > :22:47.struck down another couple of places in the women's long jump.

:22:47. > :22:52.Gomes, representing Portugal with a season's best of six metres 74.

:22:53. > :23:00.Again, well beyond the six metres mark. These are treacherous

:23:00. > :23:06.conditions for all the long jumpers. The world indoor pentathlon

:23:06. > :23:14.champion in 2004. Perfect off the board in this instance. Will this

:23:14. > :23:21.demote Shara Proctor further? Indeed it does, she moves into

:23:21. > :23:26.second place, 6.58 for the Portuguese athlete.

:23:26. > :23:31.There is an update of the team standings. Russia obviously still

:23:31. > :23:38.in the lead. We are still in third place though, just ahead of the

:23:38. > :23:42.Ukraine. 200m on track next, and in 2004 when Abi Oyepitan made the

:23:42. > :23:46.final of the Olympics, she seemed like she had the world at her feet.

:23:46. > :23:48.Since then it has been a catalogue of injuries so it is good to see

:23:48. > :23:58.her running well again in a British vest.

:23:58. > :23:58.

:23:58. > :24:04.The -- it is great to see you back on the team and you must be

:24:04. > :24:09.delighted. Yes, it is starting to be a good year. It is since 2006 I

:24:09. > :24:14.have been away so it is good. After Athens I had so many plans and

:24:14. > :24:17.nothing came to fruition so it just teaches you that you have to take

:24:17. > :24:24.it as it comes and enjoy the moment because you don't know what will

:24:24. > :24:29.happen, and I didn't enjoy at the first part of my career as much. I

:24:29. > :24:33.regret that so now I really think about what I am doing and I enjoy

:24:33. > :24:39.the moment because you don't know what will happen. I feel like I

:24:39. > :24:49.have got a good run in me, and it has been going well in training. I

:24:49. > :24:56.am trying to stay positive and confident. I think it should go

:24:56. > :25:02.well, so here's hoping. You get a feeling of not just how wet it is,

:25:02. > :25:12.but how cold it tears from her a big hat. Obviously awful conditions

:25:12. > :25:12.

:25:12. > :25:17.from -- for sprinters. How frustrating must the last few years

:25:18. > :25:22.have been frustrating for Abi Oyepitan? It was non-stop injuries,

:25:22. > :25:26.identifying the problem, but as she said she has had a torrid time and

:25:26. > :25:31.she appreciates being back on the track and running. It is great to

:25:32. > :25:37.see her back. She have the world at her feet, like you said. If she can

:25:37. > :25:41.just get a good run under her belt, because that is a problem - when

:25:41. > :25:45.you are injured you like that feeling - and she needs

:25:45. > :25:52.competitiveness back in her bones. It is hard even when you do get fit

:25:52. > :25:56.to find the confidence to push it. But that is what she does in

:25:56. > :26:00.training now which is different to how she used to train. When you are

:26:00. > :26:06.young, you throw yourself at everything but she has learnt to

:26:06. > :26:10.train smartly with her coach Tony Lester. They have found a way of

:26:10. > :26:16.training with someone who is fragile. It is great to see her

:26:16. > :26:18.back because she was so close to quitting. And she got a silver

:26:18. > :26:24.medal in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year as well it was

:26:24. > :26:28.important for her. Yes, she has worked so hard to keep returning

:26:28. > :26:34.after injury. That is the hardest thing to do. When you return it is

:26:34. > :26:38.very frustrating because you know you could be so much better if life

:26:38. > :26:43.was smoother. For me, it is great to see her back running. Let's get

:26:43. > :26:49.on with the race now. It is the women's 200m, Steve Cram

:26:49. > :26:59.commentating on this one. There is the line-up. She wouldn't have

:26:59. > :27:19.

:27:19. > :27:25.enjoyed that draw, Abi Oyepitan on European champions a -- of

:27:25. > :27:33.different sorts. The first race which was run a few minutes ago was

:27:33. > :27:39.run in 23.425. She will be having to run for a place, and a time as

:27:39. > :27:44.well. You can see her season's best is 23.21, she will have to be

:27:44. > :27:54.certainly running as fast as that. There will be into a wind, which

:27:54. > :28:03.will not be as easy. There is the Russian, second in this race last

:28:03. > :28:07.year. I thought in the relay yesterday the Ukrainian run the top

:28:07. > :28:17.bend looking very good. She has set a personal best this year, will

:28:17. > :28:28.

:28:28. > :28:34.there, the champion from Barcelona but she has not been running as

:28:34. > :28:44.well as that this year. She has got the draw on the outside, Abi

:28:44. > :28:44.

:28:44. > :28:51.Oyepitan for Great Britain on the inside. It is still raining. It is

:28:51. > :29:01.getting colder by the minute. A stiff breeze if not a strong wind

:29:01. > :29:29.

:29:29. > :29:36.Ukrainian who has got the better start right in the middle. As

:29:36. > :29:44.expected, Abi Oyepitan trying to get alongside. It is the Ukrainian

:29:44. > :29:52.pulling away. She is going to win this one. Abi Oyepitan has to

:29:52. > :29:57.settle for 5th place, 23. Turn the winning time. She is undoubtedly

:29:57. > :30:01.the winner, looked so good in the relay yesterday I thought and has

:30:01. > :30:06.come back in the 200m and shown the sort of form she has been showing

:30:06. > :30:16.this year, well she has carried it into these European team

:30:16. > :30:18.

:30:18. > :30:23.championships. Not a super-fast to see if she sticks with that

:30:24. > :30:29.place. It might be 6th place when added together. Why are, certainly

:30:29. > :30:32.the German shirt, 23.45 in the first heat, it's going to be tough

:30:32. > :30:38.for her. But it's good to see her running for Great Britain once

:30:38. > :30:42.again. And injury free? That's very true indeed. This kind of race, it

:30:42. > :30:48.really is the kind of competition she would like to be in. This is

:30:48. > :30:52.the only way she is going to improve. She knows these women are

:30:52. > :30:55.tough, experienced competitors. They have arrived while she has

:30:55. > :30:59.been injured, so she needs to get in and mix with these types more

:30:59. > :31:03.regularly. For me, I'm pleased to see her back running, looking

:31:03. > :31:09.confident, looking strong and in great physical shape. I'm just

:31:09. > :31:12.looking forward to the season and folding and a healthy Abi Oyepitan

:31:12. > :31:22.and going out there and showing us what she is capable of doing. I

:31:22. > :31:33.

:31:33. > :31:38.think there's a lot more to come long jump. Shara Proctor is down in

:31:38. > :31:48.5th place after that effort. The lead is held by Carolina Kluft,

:31:48. > :31:50.

:31:50. > :32:00.good. There is confirmation. A white flag for Shara Proctor in the

:32:00. > :32:01.

:32:01. > :32:05.second round. The world championship finalist, hoping that

:32:05. > :32:13.she can transfer that type of form and ability, while wearing a

:32:13. > :32:20.British vest. She's currently in 5th. Appeared to be a similar type

:32:20. > :32:30.of distance. Slight improvement. No improvement in the position, but a

:32:30. > :32:53.

:32:53. > :32:57.slight improvement in distance, A little bit of a shake-up ahead,

:32:57. > :33:03.perhaps not the race you were looking for? No, I think I executed

:33:03. > :33:08.my race and reasonably well. The first 100, I just didn't have the

:33:08. > :33:11.legs for it at the end. I'm not particularly happy with that time.

:33:11. > :33:15.But I've got points for the team, so I suppose that's the most

:33:15. > :33:19.important thing. Not just wet, cold, running until a strong headwind,

:33:19. > :33:26.which doesn't suit you, you are quite a slight athlete? I didn't

:33:26. > :33:29.realise, what was there headwind? 2.5. I am quite small, I thought I

:33:29. > :33:35.was an average woman but I keep being told by quite small. That

:33:35. > :33:42.doesn't bode well for me, especially as strong as that. Not

:33:42. > :33:45.what I was looking for. Chatting to Denise and Colin, it's amazing to

:33:45. > :33:49.think that 2004 when you made that Olympic final, it's been a long

:33:49. > :33:56.time struggling with injuries? was a lifetime ago. I was just a

:33:56. > :34:02.kid. It's been a long time. But I'm a different athlete, cider and try

:34:02. > :34:12.to thinks so much about 2004. Genuinely great to see you back.

:34:12. > :34:15.

:34:15. > :34:19.closer for third place. Great Britain still hanging on, just by

:34:19. > :34:22.one point. Russia are still well ahead. Really, that's the only

:34:22. > :34:25.thing, the bottom three look like they are going to be relegated, so

:34:25. > :34:35.the main interest is whether Britain can hang on to the third

:34:35. > :34:38.

:34:38. > :34:48.put, for Germany, Nadine Kleinert. Well, that is way beyond the lead.

:34:48. > :34:51.

:34:51. > :35:01.I was going to say 17.33, from Russia's Ana ADS bet is in the lead.

:35:01. > :35:10.

:35:10. > :35:20.Confirmation, she takes the lead. 17.81. Rebecca Peake, competing for

:35:20. > :35:51.

:35:51. > :36:01.champion and world record holder in the javelin. Really putting one out

:36:01. > :36:12.

:36:12. > :36:22.Taking part in an event that's not her speciality, just for the

:36:22. > :36:26.

:36:26. > :36:30.pouring rain is Warburton in the men's 800 metres. 12 athletes are

:36:30. > :36:40.going here, so it will be a real rough-and-tumble, I'm sure. There

:36:40. > :37:15.

:37:15. > :37:18.season, he will revise his lifetime best of 1:46.7. Will certainly go

:37:18. > :37:25.to end up over the first hundred metres higher than that. The

:37:25. > :37:31.Spaniard is leading at the moment. Antonio Manuel Reina, he will

:37:31. > :37:37.certainly be a danger man. Woolverton is sitting in 6th place

:37:37. > :37:42.at the moment. Yes, Gareth, beasts successful transition out to 800

:37:42. > :37:47.metres. -- the successful transition. He is looking to do

:37:47. > :37:51.even better this year. The big danger is Adam Kszczot, I think

:37:51. > :37:54.he's going to be a big threat to some names in the World

:37:54. > :37:58.Championships. A really good athlete, European indoor champion.

:37:58. > :38:02.Gareth Warburton, just on the inside, he needs to be a little bit

:38:02. > :38:07.careful. There are good runners, the likes of Reina, but he's got

:38:07. > :38:11.himself near the front. Just needs a little bit of room to get out

:38:11. > :38:19.there. The man you mentioned, Kszczot, moving smoothly down the

:38:19. > :38:24.field and going past Reina. Almost heading towards the Russian now,

:38:24. > :38:31.Ivan Tukhtachev. The Russian still needs. Set up beautifully for

:38:31. > :38:35.Kszczot for that first 400-metre time. It was around 52 seconds.

:38:35. > :38:39.Kszczot was in the lead. He is a big kicker, coming down the home

:38:39. > :38:49.straight. Gareth Warburton is trying to make a move. Is coming

:38:49. > :38:49.

:38:49. > :38:56.through to second place but being challenged by Jeff Lastennet. Three

:38:56. > :39:01.places ahead of Warburton's anticipated finish of 5th. I didn't

:39:01. > :39:09.say where the Ukrainian finished. A typical European team championship

:39:09. > :39:17.finishing time. But Kszczot is certainly the class act. He proved

:39:17. > :39:22.it here. 1:46.03 is what we've unofficially got Gareth Warburton

:39:22. > :39:26.at. That could be a lifetime best. Kszczot is good, watch him this

:39:26. > :39:30.year. He might not be a threat to the big names winning the world

:39:30. > :39:35.championships, but he will be good. Warburton ran very well. The good

:39:35. > :39:37.news for Great Britain, the Ukrainian athlete, who was 4th, got

:39:37. > :39:41.passed on the line. Good performance from Gareth Warburton

:39:41. > :39:45.in what was a pretty good quality field. He didn't panic when he

:39:45. > :39:49.wasn't in a good position with 200 metres to go. He worked his

:39:49. > :39:53.position, kicked away in the home straight. Look at them, they are

:39:53. > :39:59.out in lanes 3 and four, trying to produce their kick. But he got

:39:59. > :40:03.ahead of them. Third place, I think, a good performance from him. The

:40:03. > :40:13.Ukraine is a couple places further back. We should give ourselves a

:40:13. > :40:22.

:40:22. > :40:30.long jump competition. Representing Russia, the European indoor

:40:30. > :40:40.champion, Dieter she met. What kind of form will she be bringing into

:40:40. > :40:49.

:40:49. > :40:52.A good second-round effort. She gets the right flank. She may have

:40:52. > :41:02.seen the clock in the background, running into a considerable

:41:02. > :41:10.

:41:10. > :41:20.headwind. So, she could threaten Carolina Kluft's lead. 6.724, with

:41:20. > :41:20.

:41:20. > :41:30.a slight tailwind. She goes into Britain in the hurdles next. She's

:41:30. > :41:46.

:41:46. > :41:52.very much part of the team now and competing for Great Britain in the

:41:53. > :41:56.Olympics next year, in spite of competing for and delay in the

:41:56. > :42:06.World Championships. But Andy Lau have no Olympic Commission, so she

:42:06. > :42:14.

:42:14. > :42:24.is permitted to compete for Great round effort. She remains in 8th

:42:24. > :42:25.

:42:25. > :42:32.race, could result for Gareth Warburton. Just outside his

:42:32. > :42:41.lifetime best, but it was a season's best. Kszczot is in first

:42:41. > :42:43.place. The Ukrainian, our nearest rivals in the team race, as it were,

:42:43. > :42:53.he was down in 6th place. A very good race by Gareth Warburton.

:42:53. > :42:54.

:42:54. > :42:58.Surely, very soon he has got to go A superb race. In the context of

:42:58. > :43:01.the team, just what we needed? conditions were really tough out

:43:01. > :43:05.there. The main target was to get points for the team. 10. Is pretty

:43:05. > :43:08.good. Tell us about how the race went tactically. Is it what you

:43:08. > :43:14.were expecting, any particular challenges along the way? It I

:43:14. > :43:18.don't know what was expected, really. The European athletes, the

:43:18. > :43:23.Leeds athlete is from Poland, I expected him to go quickly. But it

:43:23. > :43:27.settled in, the pace suited me. made yourself a nice bit of room,

:43:27. > :43:30.with their sharp elbows coming in useful question that that swap the

:43:31. > :43:34.800 metres is about, working a bit of room for yourself. I'm pleased

:43:34. > :43:40.for myself. Do you still think you are finding a way, stepping up from

:43:40. > :43:44.400 metres to 800 metres? I stepped up for a few years now, I've got no

:43:44. > :43:49.excuses. I should be experienced enough in the 800. Great

:43:49. > :43:59.performance, you will be able to beat giving Charles van Commenee a

:43:59. > :44:10.

:44:10. > :44:19.big smile and went for that on? -- Ukrainian athlete is not having a

:44:19. > :44:25.good competition. Indeed she isn't, covertly down in 10th place. Only

:44:25. > :44:31.the top four get another effort. She is really struggling. It's Inna

:44:31. > :44:36.Ahkozova. She was predicted to get 11 points. That is second position.

:44:36. > :44:40.But she is well down on this. Look at the distance she is giving away

:44:40. > :44:48.on the board. No real speed, in these difficult conditions. This

:44:48. > :44:52.could spell good news for the Great Britain team. They are in a battle

:44:52. > :44:56.for Ukraine for a potential third place, now that we assume that

:44:56. > :45:06.Russia and Germany are out of sight. No improvement, she remains in 10th

:45:06. > :45:09.

:45:09. > :45:14.indication for you of how miserable things are here in Stockholm. It is

:45:14. > :45:21.a wonderful place in the summer normally, but not a day. Stark

:45:21. > :45:31.contrast to the weather we had yesterday. Here is the result of

:45:31. > :45:33.

:45:33. > :45:36.the shot put. No surprise, but that is one of the lowest winning

:45:36. > :45:40.distances I have seen in the European team competition, and

:45:40. > :45:47.Germany certainly doing very well in contrast to Great Britain. They

:45:47. > :45:51.have warned the women's hammer, the men's shot put, the women's javelin.

:45:51. > :45:56.One of the big events this afternoon is the men's discus with

:45:56. > :46:00.Brett Morse going for Great Britain. Rebecca Peake, a slight change in

:46:00. > :46:10.her technique over the last couple months with a new coach, she

:46:10. > :46:22.

:46:22. > :46:27.Maximum points expected for Great Britain in the next event, so

:46:27. > :46:34.pressure on Tiffany. Here you are again, are you getting

:46:34. > :46:39.used to this now? I am, and I think the Great Britain vest holds good

:46:39. > :46:44.luck for me! I had a couple of early successes in the earlier part

:46:44. > :46:48.of the season and then my wedding, and I think that may have thrown my

:46:48. > :46:53.mental focus off but I am definitely on the rise now so I am

:46:53. > :46:56.looking to continue to improve for the rest of the season. Obviously

:46:56. > :47:00.in doors, you took the British record, we have now done it

:47:00. > :47:06.outdoors but it is not your personal best. That must be a

:47:06. > :47:10.strange feeling. It is a unique situation, but I know I have more

:47:10. > :47:14.to give so I am looking forward to bringing out a lot more. A in terms

:47:14. > :47:19.of what has happened in the last few months you, winning your first

:47:19. > :47:23.medal in doors, getting married, moving over here for the summer, I

:47:23. > :47:28.mean I know you are a strong family person, are you trying to get the

:47:28. > :47:33.balance right? Definitely. Being here, I am going to miss my family

:47:33. > :47:38.a lot because we are very tight- knit, as you said, but my husband

:47:38. > :47:42.will be heading over with me so that will make things a lot easier.

:47:42. > :47:47.Then a couple of my other friends will also be in Birmingham so it

:47:47. > :47:52.will make it a lot easier to handle. I am becoming a more seasoned

:47:52. > :47:57.athlete, and getting used to being away from home and experiencing

:47:57. > :48:01.Europe in a different way. It will all be good. It has certainly all

:48:02. > :48:06.been good so far but it is a big change for her, isn't it? Yes, but

:48:06. > :48:12.she has dealt with it remarkably well. She has set British hurdling

:48:12. > :48:17.on fire. Her introduction coming on to the team, coming from the

:48:17. > :48:23.European indoors with the new record and a new British record

:48:23. > :48:29.outdoors as well. The two kind of an odd situation, she has got the

:48:29. > :48:33.British record but she has run faster. 12 when 66 for a windy time

:48:33. > :48:37.as well so she is looking in fantastic form. Yes, very

:48:37. > :48:42.competitive and all the other women in hurdles know her very well. She

:48:42. > :48:46.has announced herself strongly in Europe, just missing out on the

:48:46. > :48:50.indoor title and she has excited about coming here and showing that

:48:50. > :49:00.she is a quality hurdler and she feels very much part of the United

:49:00. > :49:16.

:49:16. > :49:21.Kingdom team, which is great to see. standing. Just the three point gap

:49:21. > :49:31.between Great Britain and the Ukraine, and this will carry on or

:49:31. > :49:34.

:49:34. > :49:38.afternoon. -- all afternoon. It is not the sort of whether you would

:49:38. > :49:42.have expected for these championships, and representatives

:49:42. > :49:50.are here from Gateshead the 2013, and the sun will be shining when we

:49:50. > :49:55.turn up in a couple of years' time. Representing Great Britain in the

:49:55. > :50:00.high jump with the bar set at one- metre 70 is Emma Green. Her first

:50:00. > :50:09.effort at this height, and just clipped it with her legs. After so

:50:09. > :50:16.much clearance with her posterior as well. So certainly a baptism of

:50:16. > :50:26.fire for her. She has clear that on many occasions. Two attempts left

:50:26. > :50:39.

:50:39. > :50:44.jump, Shara Proctor currently dropped down to 9th position. Gomes,

:50:44. > :50:54.marginal on the board. Has it made an impression on the Plasticine?

:50:54. > :50:55.

:50:55. > :51:01.Indeed, it has. It is probable that she will get a 4th and final effort.

:51:01. > :51:11.We have two heat of the hurdles and Tiffany a fully porter goes in the

:51:11. > :51:20.

:51:20. > :51:30.next heat. -- Ofili-Porter. The fastest athlete in this heat is the

:51:30. > :51:48.

:51:48. > :51:55.lane three for Paul and. Very well known to our own Jessica Ennis. She

:51:55. > :52:00.has cut her time down to 13.39, which is very important for her

:52:00. > :52:04.because it means extra points in the pentathlon. She is that the

:52:04. > :52:08.only woman in the world who can live with Jessica Ennis. She is

:52:08. > :52:17.pretty quick, she has run two minutes and five seconds on her

:52:17. > :52:27.almost, which is good. In comparison to Tiffany, the fastest

:52:27. > :52:27.

:52:27. > :52:37.woman in this field this season is the Italian at 13.12 in lane five.

:52:37. > :52:56.

:52:56. > :53:02.A good start by pretty much all of Russian. The slight headwind but

:53:02. > :53:12.nothing really to bother about, I don't think? Hopefully not. The

:53:12. > :53:19.

:53:19. > :53:29.wind was just-one metre exactly. 13.6 deemed good enough to win that

:53:29. > :53:40.

:53:40. > :53:45.this height. No mistake this time. In these vertical jumps, only four

:53:45. > :53:50.attempts in total. A very good expression was while on earth

:53:50. > :53:55.didn't I do that the first time? That height is very modest by her

:53:55. > :54:00.standards. Now, Brett Morse, a big chance for him on the international

:54:00. > :54:09.stage, but not effete rose like that. All over the shop in the

:54:09. > :54:13.circle, and it was a foul, and a very modest distance as well. If he

:54:13. > :54:18.gets it right, he has a chance of making the top four in this

:54:18. > :54:28.competition. For at Moore's competed in this event last year

:54:28. > :54:28.

:54:28. > :54:38.and said he didn't throw very well then, he is looking to at -- atone

:54:38. > :54:47.

:54:47. > :54:54.realising that there is a level of expectation about her when she

:54:55. > :54:58.pulls on the great British vest. She can shine in a British vest,

:54:58. > :55:03.she is the sort of athlete relishing the chance she has been

:55:03. > :55:08.given here. You are absolutely right. You were in New York at the

:55:08. > :55:14.diamond lead, and there she was up against the likes of Johnny

:55:14. > :55:19.Crawford. How did she look? She was leading. I spoke to her afterwards

:55:19. > :55:23.and she was leading with two hurdles to go. Kelly Wells has been

:55:23. > :55:29.running well all season, she was just ahead of her. She had a really

:55:29. > :55:32.good run, and she is getting into that sort of scenario that she

:55:32. > :55:37.knows in the world championships there will only be three Americans,

:55:37. > :55:41.and certainly if she can start running in the 12.6 region she will

:55:41. > :55:44.not be too far way of getting to the final of the world

:55:44. > :55:51.championships. Another good race for her here, wanting to get

:55:51. > :55:56.maximum points, but she knows the job is to get down here safely, get

:55:56. > :56:01.over the hurdles and take maximum points. Forget about the Times

:56:01. > :56:08.today - it is wet, windy, cold. I think she is the sort of athlete

:56:08. > :56:13.who applies herself really well. She says she has been helped to

:56:13. > :56:21.settle into the team, a scenario which is obviously a little bit

:56:21. > :56:27.strange. Chatting to the team members on Friday in the team hotel,

:56:27. > :56:30.there is a lot of camaraderie, a lot of new faces. She is not a

:56:30. > :56:35.young face in that sense, she is certainly not well known among the

:56:35. > :56:40.team but they have been getting to know each other pretty well. You

:56:40. > :56:50.can see the empty stands. Most of the people here have talked

:56:50. > :56:56.

:56:56. > :57:02.themselves in the eaves of this the women's long jump. Only four

:57:02. > :57:07.athletes will make the cut to this point. Gomes has bailed out. She

:57:07. > :57:17.will finish in 4th place. Her only effort that she registered six

:57:17. > :57:31.

:57:31. > :57:41.she got a red flag. 6.58 will clearly be her best. Indeed four

:57:41. > :57:50.

:57:50. > :58:00.metres 81 it was measured at so she after winning this event in Bergen

:58:00. > :58:02.

:58:02. > :58:09.last year. Coming into this season with a decent level of form. And

:58:09. > :58:16.again, bailed out. Despite the white flag, it won't be an

:58:16. > :58:21.improvement on her previous round effort of six metres 60. Coming

:58:21. > :58:26.into this competition, equalled a lifetime best of six metres 78, but

:58:26. > :58:36.again, given the difficult conditions out there, six metres 60

:58:36. > :58:45.

:58:45. > :58:54.is a decent effort. Third place for 100m hurdles. Tiffany Ofili-Porter

:58:54. > :59:01.going for Great Britain in the third lane in the middle. Let's

:59:01. > :59:04.remind ourselves of the winning time from the first team - 13.16.

:59:04. > :59:14.All the athletes in this team have broken 13 seconds but most of them

:59:14. > :59:20.will be just this season. Most of them have run around 12.9 seconds

:59:20. > :59:30.apart from Tiffany Ofili-Porter. Next to her could be the biggest

:59:30. > :59:59.

:59:59. > :00:09.threat, the Czech athlete. They blocks. I'm looking at the window,

:00:09. > :00:26.

:00:26. > :00:35.it might have stopped raining, but She's got some work to do. This

:00:36. > :00:45.will be an unexpected win, Belarus taking the maximum points. That's

:00:46. > :00:46.

:00:46. > :00:50.not as fast as the first race. She will be delighted to have taken the

:00:50. > :00:54.scalp of Tiffany Porter. She might be in third when the time has come

:00:54. > :01:00.up. We have to sort that out. It wasn't a good performance for

:01:00. > :01:03.Tiffany Ofili-Porter. What did he make of that? Remember, she is not

:01:03. > :01:06.long arrived from the US. These conditions are pretty tight. I

:01:06. > :01:09.think she just wasn't expecting this to happen to her. When someone

:01:09. > :01:14.comes on your shoulder quite quickly, it's quite difficult to

:01:14. > :01:20.respond instantly. That's what made it really awkward. Let's have a

:01:20. > :01:24.look again. She get a reasonable start. She's quite aggressive. We

:01:24. > :01:30.are used to seeing that. But the conditions themselves are really

:01:31. > :01:39.very difficult. Her technique, she's holding it all together, just

:01:39. > :01:44.doesn't seem to be the zip, I think that's what's really lacking. Here

:01:44. > :01:48.you go, working hard into the first hurdle. News to set herself up well.

:01:48. > :01:54.You run off it, strongly. You drive into the second hurdle, pulling the

:01:54. > :01:57.trailing leg through, making sure that everything is nice and clean.

:01:57. > :02:06.But there just doesn't seem to beat the zip that we saw earlier in the

:02:06. > :02:11.season. There is no 12 points 77 performance here. Not really a

:02:11. > :02:21.competence clearance there, but she get back into the race. Then she

:02:21. > :02:25.

:02:25. > :02:33.knows, no, dear, not much I can do. final round effort. She is

:02:33. > :02:43.currently in second place. Can she going to the lead? She is trailing

:02:43. > :02:47.

:02:47. > :02:53.by one centimetre, behind the Russian. Again, an awkward landing.

:02:53. > :02:57.Red flag. 6.7 to three, her best effort. Second place for Sweden,

:02:57. > :03:07.she likes it. Setting a season's best. Here is the competition

:03:07. > :03:28.

:03:28. > :03:36.winner. Director Sheena, the mark, but it's a red flag. That's

:03:37. > :03:42.enough for victory for the Russian team. Maximum points. And onwards

:03:42. > :03:46.mark -- march to the title. They also took maximum points in the

:03:46. > :03:52.women's 100-metre hurdles. It was a quicker time than the second race,

:03:52. > :04:01.so that's two wins in a row for her. She won this event last year.

:04:01. > :04:04.Disappointingly, Tiffany Ofili- Porter only got 4th. One better

:04:04. > :04:13.than the Ukrainians were expecting, three worse off than Britain were

:04:13. > :04:18.Tiffany, you've been in great form. What do you think happened? I just

:04:18. > :04:23.wasn't sharp, I didn't have it. It wasn't a good race. In terms of the

:04:23. > :04:27.weather, are you good at a bad weather running, because of the you

:04:27. > :04:31.enjoy? Nobody enjoys it, but if it rains on me it rains on everybody

:04:31. > :04:33.else. I wasn't thinking about the weather. In terms of being part of

:04:34. > :04:39.the British team, a completely different dynamic and different

:04:39. > :04:44.pressure? Yeah, it's a little new to me. But, you know, you get used

:04:44. > :04:49.to it. It's tough, you expected to win, you can only go down. That

:04:49. > :04:54.makes it difficult as well? I don't really let expectations affect me,

:04:54. > :05:00.whether they are high or low, I just go out to compete. That was my

:05:00. > :05:03.main focus today. Where do you go from here? The next meet, and going

:05:03. > :05:13.to get some good training in, put this race behind me and look to the

:05:13. > :05:45.

:05:45. > :05:55.for Britain in the 5000 metres. With the form she's been in, that

:05:55. > :05:59.

:05:59. > :06:03.will be one not to mess. -- not to mess. A 3000 metres for Andy

:06:03. > :06:09.Baddeley. Good points expected there. As we can say, it doesn't

:06:09. > :06:14.always go to plan. It's all or of the bumping of the relay. As you

:06:14. > :06:24.can see from that picture, the men and women relays are finishing off

:06:24. > :06:56.

:06:56. > :07:06.years of Wimbledon. A special documentary tonight. The coverage

:07:06. > :07:16.will start from midday on BBC Two. Also, the women's basketball

:07:16. > :07:23.

:07:23. > :07:27.Brett Morse is lucky to get one on the board for Great Britain.

:07:27. > :07:35.Managed to keep his balance, stay in the circle. That close to the

:07:35. > :07:42.60-metre mark. The competition is being led by Robert Harding, the

:07:42. > :07:48.current champion. Morse, really relishing the opportunity to test

:07:48. > :07:52.himself against the world's best. The unfortunately, not in these

:07:52. > :08:02.conditions. British discus throwing has been superb. Brett Morse moves

:08:02. > :08:04.

:08:04. > :08:14.up to 5th. Let's hope we give her something to cheer about. The

:08:14. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:35.So, it is the 3000 bidders next, with Andy Baddeley stepping up a

:08:35. > :08:39.distance. He is pleased to be back in the British team after an

:08:39. > :08:43.absence. The last time I did it was when I was doing the final version

:08:43. > :08:47.of the European Cup, eight teams, men and women separate. I was lucky

:08:47. > :08:53.enough to be part of a great team. We won that year. The last couple

:08:53. > :08:57.of years, I wasn't so keen on the format changes when they put in the

:08:57. > :09:01.messing about with so. But 12 guys is probably more of an exciting

:09:01. > :09:03.race than eight. It's always good to have tactical practice. In the

:09:03. > :09:09.championships, there is no pacemaker. It's a different

:09:09. > :09:16.distance. Often it is so slow that it's like running double the

:09:16. > :09:19.distance. We don't ask me -- people to make predictions, but are you

:09:19. > :09:23.confident that if you don't get maximum points you can get a lot

:09:23. > :09:28.of.? I'll be shooting for maximum points, we are going out there to

:09:28. > :09:34.try and win. The athlete that a dangerous in this type of race are

:09:34. > :09:37.the Spanish athletes, he is also stepping up. Actually, the French

:09:37. > :09:41.athlete is a 1500 metre runner. I think a lot of countries see at the

:09:41. > :09:46.same way and they think, actually, the way the races go, having a 15-

:09:46. > :09:50.metre runner in the 3000 is useful. It will be interesting this year.

:09:50. > :09:55.The former get on with that race, will have a chat with Steve Cram. A

:09:55. > :10:00.couple of years ago, Andy won the Dream Mile, the fastest over a mile

:10:00. > :10:04.and the world, he hasn't produced it in the championships. Do you

:10:04. > :10:11.feel he's disappointed so far? he's had some great races in his

:10:11. > :10:15.career. That was the Olympic yeah, I think it was. While that Dream

:10:15. > :10:18.Mile maybe wasn't the strongest field, we were expecting him to win

:10:18. > :10:23.medals at the Olympics. Last year was the big disappointment, the

:10:23. > :10:27.Olympic championships. It really took a lot out of him. Talking to

:10:27. > :10:30.him yesterday, I'm not sure he's recovered. I think it could be an

:10:30. > :10:34.important race for him. He didn't run particularly well in Oslo last

:10:34. > :10:44.week, in his favoured event, the 1500. A winner here, all getting

:10:44. > :10:45.

:10:45. > :10:55.close to win, would be good for his Andy Baddeley, you heard what he

:10:55. > :11:11.

:11:11. > :11:19.said, he's glad that is is this a couple of years ago. The Spanish

:11:19. > :11:29.colours, the Olympic finalist. The man everybody will want to beat is

:11:29. > :11:34.

:11:34. > :11:44.the wily old fox from Portugal, Rui Silva. He's happy to watch and wait

:11:44. > :11:54.to see what kind of race develops. It's never going to be particularly

:11:54. > :11:57.

:11:57. > :12:03.fast, he will keep an eye on things. Rui Silva will be a danger, I think

:12:03. > :12:08.Juan Carlos Higuero is the man who will really watch. He's not as

:12:09. > :12:12.quick as used to be over 1500 metres, but he'll still be a danger.

:12:12. > :12:22.Andy Baddeley has more than happy to be at the back for the time

:12:22. > :12:46.

:12:46. > :12:51.talented athlete. Used to compete against Jessica Ennis and Louise

:12:51. > :12:56.Hazel, the prominent heptathletes. She used to get victories against

:12:56. > :12:59.them as a junior. Again, superb clearance in terms of how high she

:13:00. > :13:09.is over the bar. Still just clipping it with her lower legs.

:13:10. > :13:24.

:13:24. > :13:34.Now beginning to make a move. The pace has increased the that. The

:13:34. > :13:34.

:13:34. > :13:38.Russian, Yegor Nikolayev, is leading. The tall German, Reiko

:13:39. > :13:46.Schwarz. Rui Silva, Ana de red and green of Portugal, is still there.

:13:46. > :13:50.After a slow first kilometre, they are going to pick up the pace. It's

:13:50. > :13:57.usually expected, and now the field, for the first time in the race, is

:13:57. > :14:00.beginning to be struck out. They won't keep that up. Don't panic

:14:00. > :14:04.when someone goes off at the front like that. Andy Baddeley is moving

:14:04. > :14:13.his way through nicely. He will be keeping an eye on Juan Carlos

:14:13. > :14:19.Higuero. Well, he should be running in the Major League races if he can

:14:19. > :14:24.keep up that pace. Someone goes to the front, picks it up, and

:14:24. > :14:29.everybody panics. It started slow, he decided to get things moving

:14:29. > :14:34.along, which is a good thing. I'm really interested to hear how IND

:14:34. > :14:39.conducts himself here. On Friday, we were talking about tactics. --

:14:40. > :14:45.Andy. The last lap of 1500 metre braces, when you do it yourself to

:14:45. > :14:49.the front. For a very intelligent man, which Andy Baddeley is, his

:14:49. > :14:52.intent hasn't always made the biggest decisions. -- he hasn't

:14:52. > :14:56.always made the best decisions. Last year was a huge opportunity

:14:56. > :15:06.that he wasn't able to grasp. How he bounces back is very important.

:15:06. > :15:15.

:15:15. > :15:25.Of course, looking important to a 73.67. He expected increase in

:15:25. > :15:36.

:15:36. > :15:42.in his interview, the Frenchman, at the European indoor bronze-

:15:42. > :15:46.medallist at the 1,500 metres, the Spaniard in the top five with the

:15:46. > :15:53.Belorussian trapped on the inside. Andy Baddeley taking close order

:15:53. > :15:59.with three laps to go. Pretty much a 64 second lap. The initial

:15:59. > :16:09.injection of pace has settled down again. I don't think it will get

:16:09. > :16:10.

:16:10. > :16:17.any quicker. We will look to those names. Andy Baddeley is not too far

:16:17. > :16:21.away. The Frenchman has a pretty good finish. I hope Andy can stay

:16:21. > :16:26.close enough to those guys when the kick does come and he is able to

:16:26. > :16:31.react quickly. If he does not want to give them a 3-four-metre head

:16:31. > :16:41.start on the last lap, he needs to be as close as you can when the

:16:41. > :16:42.

:16:42. > :16:48.race really gets moving. Russian leading. Coming through

:16:48. > :16:53.with 800 metres to go. Andy Baddeley sitting back in 7th place.

:16:54. > :17:02.Sticking close to the leading group. The Italian has moved into the top

:17:02. > :17:11.group for the first time. I think we can expect a real big push for

:17:11. > :17:18.the finish, still being led by the Russian. The Frenchman has taken

:17:18. > :17:23.the lead. Andy Baddeley has spotted the danger. 600 metres to go. The

:17:23. > :17:33.pace is beginning to increase. is the decision-making, were Andy

:17:33. > :17:41.Baddeley has to think about what he is doing and where he wants to beat.

:17:41. > :17:51.-- beat. He has got to be close false start he is Ana good position

:17:51. > :18:02.

:18:02. > :18:12.have his highest position in the race so far. He has been subdued so

:18:12. > :18:32.

:18:32. > :18:42.far. Now the pace has increased, he those four and Andy Baddeley. Andy

:18:42. > :18:47.

:18:47. > :18:57.Baddeley is going to have to come wide. The Spaniard has won it. Andy

:18:57. > :18:58.

:18:58. > :19:05.Baddeley just got into 4th. They expected 11. That Andy Baddeley,

:19:05. > :19:09.has been cut by two points. Tactical from start to finish. Andy

:19:09. > :19:16.Baddeley was perhaps three or four metres adrift with that 200 metres

:19:16. > :19:23.to go and that was the difference at the end. I don't like to be too

:19:23. > :19:27.critical. He is probably not in the shape he wants to be. At the bell,

:19:27. > :19:31.there is a five-metre gap. They are all starting to move and Andy

:19:31. > :19:37.finishes as good as anybody in the home straight but he is coming from

:19:37. > :19:41.too far Black -- back. They are moving and he is struggling to get

:19:41. > :19:44.their acceleration. Because it happened a little bit further back

:19:44. > :19:51.in 5th or 6th place, he is struggling to get on terms with

:19:51. > :19:57.them. They are all changing gear. Andy Baddeley is moving out but is

:19:57. > :20:01.coming from five metres adrift. I cannot say he has been terrible,

:20:01. > :20:07.but 4th place in this race is something he will be disappointed

:20:07. > :20:12.with. Look how quickly he was finishing. He was 3.5 metres from

:20:12. > :20:16.winning this race. We have talked about him a lot over the years. It

:20:16. > :20:20.will be interesting to get his thoughts on whether he thought he

:20:20. > :20:30.was in the right place and how he was able to react over the last 200

:20:30. > :20:30.

:20:30. > :20:34.metres. 4th place. Steve, Andy Baddeley is such an honest man, he

:20:34. > :20:39.is such an honest athlete, he would pretty much read it the same way

:20:39. > :20:44.you did. I'm sure it will be reflected in his interview.

:20:44. > :20:49.other thing to say, it is early and Andy will want some races to build

:20:50. > :20:55.up his speed. He has ran one, 800 this year, not a particularly good

:20:55. > :21:02.race as I said, in Oslo. This is the sort of race he thought he

:21:02. > :21:09.could win. He wasn't too far away, if he had been a bit closer, who

:21:09. > :21:19.knows what would have happened. real surprise about the Spaniard

:21:19. > :21:42.

:21:42. > :21:48.Emma Perkins. It is her first senior appearance for Great Britain

:21:48. > :21:52.after taking time out. Again, appeared to be miles over the bar

:21:52. > :22:01.and clipping it with her lower legs. Some technical adjustment going to

:22:01. > :22:06.have to be made. Look at the height she attained. Only to clip it with

:22:06. > :22:09.her lower legs. She will finish in 11th. That is what she was

:22:09. > :22:15.predicted so no points have been given away but not close to her a

:22:15. > :22:18.season's best. Disappointment. Baddeley, don't shoot me I am the

:22:18. > :22:23.messenger relaying something from the commentary box. They are

:22:23. > :22:28.wandering about your tactics in that race, wandering if you left it

:22:28. > :22:34.a little bit late? We can sometimes get criticised for tactics. I don't

:22:34. > :22:38.go out there and try not to win! I am disappointed for the team,

:22:38. > :22:43.disappointed for myself because it was a race I could win, and I

:22:43. > :22:48.misjudged it a little bit. In your defence, you don't do that many

:22:48. > :22:56.3,000 metres. Not a huge amount of experience perhaps? These guys

:22:56. > :23:02.don't either, so there is no excuse from that point of view. I need to

:23:02. > :23:08.work on getting closer to the front. I thought we were going to jog on a

:23:08. > :23:16.little bit longer than we did. When it did go faster, I had time to get

:23:16. > :23:21.to the front. In terms of the bigger picture this season, where

:23:21. > :23:25.would you assess your condition at the moment? Training has been going

:23:25. > :23:35.great. That is A3 races in horrible conditions and hopefully I will get

:23:35. > :23:39.a nice race and run well. Thanks and become a disappointed today but

:23:39. > :23:44.look forward to watching you the rest of the season.

:23:44. > :23:49.At least he was honest enough to make the right assessment. If you

:23:49. > :23:53.don't know what you did wrong, you have problems. He will look back on

:23:53. > :23:59.that and I think he already knows he could have won it. 4th place and

:23:59. > :24:03.although he was 4th, we are still extending the lead over the Ukraine.

:24:03. > :24:07.Down at the bottom, the Czech Republic are getting worried. They

:24:07. > :24:12.have had a couple of horrendous results and find themselves in the

:24:12. > :24:17.bottom three, totally unexpected performance from them. They are in

:24:17. > :24:22.danger of being relegated. Carolina Kluft, lovely summer you're having

:24:22. > :24:26.in Sweden. This is typical Swedish summer, I am sorry for Stam

:24:27. > :24:32.yesterday was good, today is bad for stamped tell us about your long

:24:32. > :24:38.jump, it was a good performance? I feel like I am getting back to

:24:38. > :24:43.where I once was. It is getting better and better. Bad weather, but

:24:43. > :24:49.I managed to do a good jump. I feel I have more to work on, of course

:24:49. > :24:54.but it is nice to be healthy again and be able to jump good. Remember

:24:54. > :24:58.when you are doing the heptathlon, was this six point 97 your best and

:24:58. > :25:05.the multi-event? I would love to break that personal record of

:25:05. > :25:11.course. I need to work more of course and hopefully before I quit,

:25:11. > :25:15.I am going to break it. You are looking in the best shape you have

:25:15. > :25:19.looked in the last few years false start I have been working really

:25:19. > :25:29.hard it with my rehab and injuries. I am trying to do everything I can

:25:29. > :25:37.

:25:37. > :25:47.to get back into good shape. Thanks need to be wrapped up. We are

:25:47. > :25:49.

:25:49. > :25:56.nicely tucked away in the commentary box. There has been some

:25:56. > :25:59.good support. Most of the spectators are other team members.

:25:59. > :26:05.Andy Turner, good to see him out there. Maximum points from him for

:26:05. > :26:15.Great Britain. Marlon Devonish, who was and involved in the relay

:26:15. > :26:17.

:26:17. > :26:22.yesterday. The 4x4 will finish everything off later on.

:26:22. > :26:31.Two athletes left to go in the men's discus competition. It is the

:26:31. > :26:40.4th and final round. The athletes who received the false and final

:26:40. > :26:50.effort is a Jan Marcell from the Czech Republic. 5th in the Olympics

:26:50. > :26:51.

:26:51. > :26:57.for Spain. That is a similar type of distance. This guy is very lucky

:26:57. > :27:03.to be here today. Like me, he wasn't being let inside the stadium

:27:03. > :27:08.this afternoon. I walked in with him, and the very over-zealous

:27:08. > :27:14.officials said you cannot come in here, it is not open. He said, I am

:27:14. > :27:22.an athlete and I have come up to warm-up for my event. Anyway he is

:27:22. > :27:26.in. That is a superb throw. Victory has gone to the defending European

:27:26. > :27:36.team champion, the reigning world champion, Robert Harting of Germany

:27:36. > :27:43.

:27:43. > :27:51.who has improved with every round the 65-metre line for the reigning

:27:51. > :27:57.world champion. In superb form and came in here as the world leader.

:27:57. > :28:07.Another great product of the German discus system. His technique

:28:07. > :28:10.

:28:10. > :28:15.reminiscence of the greats before him. 65 metres plus, when the

:28:15. > :28:19.conditions are like this, unbeatable. A good performance by

:28:19. > :28:26.Brett a moors, but Robert Harting consolidates his position as the

:28:26. > :28:29.best in Stockholm. Next we see the women's 1,500 metre

:28:30. > :28:34.of featuring Charlene Thomas for Great Britain. Her call-up was a

:28:34. > :28:38.Great Britain. Her call-up was a bit of a surprise to her.

:28:38. > :28:44.I really wasn't expecting to get the selection. It was Monday

:28:44. > :28:50.evening, my coach and I were having a chat. Talking about who would get

:28:50. > :28:55.selected. This person will be selected for the 800. I was working

:28:55. > :29:00.out, where would I be down the list. It is only one athlete in each

:29:00. > :29:07.event. And received an e-mail as we were just about to start the grass

:29:07. > :29:13.session on Monday evening saying, you are in the three K. OK, it is a

:29:13. > :29:18.GB best, fantastic. Also the possibility and might do a 15

:29:18. > :29:23.because Jemma Simpson was in for the 15th and also Lisa have been.

:29:23. > :29:27.It was the following morning I received any male saying you are in

:29:27. > :29:31.the 1,500, and I thought, yes! I am the 1,500, and I thought, yes! I am

:29:31. > :29:37.back. She is back indeed. Missed all of

:29:37. > :29:42.last year. Charlene will be looking for a good race here. She has tough

:29:42. > :29:52.competition. Points all important. Let's look at how things are

:29:52. > :29:52.

:29:52. > :29:57.sitting at the moment. 30 events have been completed, 10 to go. We

:29:57. > :30:02.have been talking about the relegation battle, the Czech

:30:02. > :30:12.Republic on now back ahead of Belarus. Great Britain looking good

:30:12. > :30:15.

:30:15. > :30:20.Ukrainian is in great form. As far Charlene Thomas is concerned, she

:30:20. > :30:26.will be the athlete she will be most worried about. Good athletes,

:30:26. > :30:30.including the European champion, Nuria Fernandez, running for Spain.

:30:30. > :30:36.Those are the big names alongside Britain's representatives. It's

:30:36. > :30:46.good to see Charlene back. There has only really been one fast race

:30:46. > :30:47.

:30:47. > :30:50.she has been able to get involved third showed that she was more than

:30:50. > :30:53.capable of coming into this race and running well. It's good to see

:30:53. > :30:59.her back in a British vest. I think you can see how much it means to

:30:59. > :31:02.her to be back competing, running freely again. She's taken benefit

:31:02. > :31:09.of some of the offers that have been made to British endurance

:31:09. > :31:13.athletes, trips to altitude. I now how much she and others enjoyed the

:31:13. > :31:23.training camp in Kenya. She has really benefited from that and

:31:23. > :31:24.

:31:24. > :31:27.she's had a good start the season. Let's see what she can do here.

:31:27. > :31:35.Sara Moreira of Portugal these them through. The ominous Spaniard, in

:31:35. > :31:38.third place. Charlene Thomas, I just wonder, the athlete just

:31:38. > :31:42.inside the Spaniard, how much she will be thinking about the

:31:42. > :31:46.possibility of getting a world championship A standard, certainly

:31:46. > :31:52.in the next few weeks, so that the pressure of the trials and

:31:52. > :32:02.achieving a standard or, as well as winning a race, will be important

:32:02. > :32:03.

:32:03. > :32:06.for selection. She is running well here, in 4th place. Still being led

:32:06. > :32:11.by Sarah Mourinho of Portugal. You'd expect that at this stage in

:32:11. > :32:21.the race. Well, Sarah Maria ran the steeplechase yesterday, she's been

:32:21. > :32:22.

:32:22. > :32:32.asked to do the job. Look at Fernandez, rocking and rolling a

:32:32. > :32:32.

:32:32. > :32:42.bit. I'm not sure she is in superb shape. Anna Mishchenko, in the Blue

:32:42. > :32:44.

:32:44. > :32:48.of Ukraine, she is run a good race. Yekaterina Martynova of Russia, she

:32:48. > :32:52.took a medal in the indoor championships. She is going to be

:32:52. > :33:01.no slouch. His pace is dropping again. Let's see what they go

:33:01. > :33:08.through 800 and. Will they see 57 seconds? Yekaterina Martynova, she

:33:08. > :33:12.is not really able to keep the pace, somebody has to pick this up.

:33:12. > :33:18.Charlene Thomas is a little boxed in. If I were her, I'd be thinking

:33:18. > :33:23.of getting out of that position at this point. The athlete Box day at

:33:23. > :33:27.the moment in 4th place is Denise Krebs, the German indoor champion.

:33:27. > :33:37.A gutsy race, she had seven and a half laps of the track yesterday,

:33:37. > :33:37.

:33:37. > :33:42.Thomas. The Polish athlete, just coming into contact with Charlene

:33:42. > :33:47.Thomas. The pace is beginning to increase at the bell. The

:33:47. > :33:51.Belarussian leads, Charlene Thomas is still in the leading group.

:33:51. > :33:54.Fernandez has the inside, Charlene Thomas made two or three attempts

:33:55. > :33:58.to elbow her way out. She still fairly close to the front. She

:33:59. > :34:04.knows she has to get out around the back straight. The tall Russian in

:34:04. > :34:10.front of her, Fernandez at the front. They are pushing and bumping

:34:10. > :34:15.all over the place. Anna Mishchenko was in third, she is quick in the

:34:15. > :34:19.third straight. Anna Mishchenko was starting to go on the outside of

:34:19. > :34:23.the Ukraine. The Russian is moving into third. Thomas is looking

:34:23. > :34:28.forward on the inside, she's got through. The big names are out in

:34:28. > :34:32.front. Fernandez is looking like she is struggling. Charlene Thomas,

:34:32. > :34:37.can she picked off one or two of these ahead of her? Charlene Thomas

:34:37. > :34:41.is right there. Can she find some room between them? Charlene Thomas,

:34:41. > :34:46.looking to get ahead of hair! Now she's coming through! Charlene

:34:46. > :34:52.Thomas is going to get maximum points for Great Britain! She wins

:34:52. > :34:55.it, what a run. All over the place, in and out, down the back straight,

:34:55. > :35:00.found some room. Again in the home straight. She was close enough to

:35:00. > :35:07.strike. Those are some big scalps ahead of her. Anna Mishchenko has

:35:07. > :35:12.been winning races, Yekaterina Martynova there is a gold-medallist.

:35:12. > :35:18.She said it was good to be back, and she's back in style. What a

:35:18. > :35:21.winner. That's a big surprise. commentary box was going crazy when

:35:21. > :35:27.Charlene Thomas was trying to find her way through. But nobody was

:35:27. > :35:33.cheering louder than the guy who made the predictions. Charlene

:35:33. > :35:42.Thomas has totally blown that prediction apart by Mark Butler.

:35:42. > :35:49.Nobody really could have expected that. There was a lot of bumping by

:35:49. > :35:54.Sylwia Ejdys. Charlene Thomas, just inside the Belarussian, manages to

:35:54. > :36:01.glide past her. She's got the very tall Russian athlete, Yekaterina

:36:01. > :36:06.Martynova. Anna Mishchenko, who we thought would be a danger from the

:36:06. > :36:11.start, then another little gap appears. Charlene is out in lane

:36:11. > :36:16.two, she goes ahead of Anna Mishchenko. Everybody else is

:36:16. > :36:22.fading, the Briton coming on strong. Yes! 12 massive points for the

:36:22. > :36:26.British team. Well done. The one thing about Charlene Thomas is when

:36:26. > :36:30.she is in shape, she can finish really well. She can do a lot of

:36:30. > :36:36.damage in races that are run at this sort of pace. The big question

:36:36. > :36:39.for her going forward is how fast she can run. Can she get down to

:36:39. > :36:43.the times that will make it competitive when she gets into the

:36:43. > :36:47.championship? We have seen her do this in the European Championships

:36:47. > :36:51.in the past, here that the European Team Championship, that a big win

:36:51. > :37:01.for her. That will give her huge confidence. Some of these athletes

:37:01. > :37:08.

:37:09. > :37:12.are good names on the world circuit I'm sure all of her training group

:37:12. > :37:15.would have been jumping up and down and enjoying the performance. She

:37:16. > :37:25.was in and out, but she took the gaps when they came. She didn't

:37:26. > :37:34.

:37:34. > :37:39.panic, always a good thing. What a Ukraine that were hoping and maybe

:37:39. > :37:48.expecting to get the 12 points. But they had to settle for 10, Anna

:37:48. > :37:55.I got a very excited young lady alongside me. Let me tell you! What

:37:55. > :37:59.a brilliant, brilliant race. happy! Yeah, I'm off my head.

:37:59. > :38:02.said in your interview that you were hoping to just get here,

:38:02. > :38:07.initially the 3000, then you got the 1500. To respond with that kind

:38:07. > :38:12.of race, with a lot of pressure on you, outstanding? It so pleased. I

:38:12. > :38:17.was predicted 4th. I knew I could win the race. I'm so confident at

:38:17. > :38:23.the moment. My finishes just... I'm so happy with my finish, that is

:38:23. > :38:28.all that hard work, my husband and I, my coach, watching at home, I

:38:28. > :38:32.love you, you are the best coast she -- coaching the world. You beat

:38:32. > :38:38.some really good athlete? I'm so excited. The Ukraine athlete, she

:38:38. > :38:42.was probably favourite. She has run 4.03 this year. I know I am in

:38:42. > :38:46.shape to run that, if not quicker. I just not had the opportunity to

:38:46. > :38:52.do so because I'm not being able to get into races. Robert Wagner, my

:38:52. > :38:56.agent, if you are watching, get me into some races! I don't think you

:38:56. > :39:03.have any trouble getting you races after that. I hope, I really hope

:39:03. > :39:09.that I can get in a fast race now. I think I just run 4.06. I made a

:39:09. > :39:14.couple of mistakes, I got boxed in, I got tripped up. I've got work to

:39:14. > :39:18.do still. But, yes, to be able to run that fast and win the race in

:39:18. > :39:28.those conditions, to have all of those clips, that is how strong...

:39:28. > :39:29.

:39:29. > :39:35.You know, I'm in such great shape. I guess that 4.0 59 shouldn't be a

:39:35. > :39:39.problem? And healthy, touch wood, everything is going to plan. It's

:39:39. > :39:45.exciting. That's been a moment of the began so far. Congratulations.

:39:45. > :39:50.Brilliant. Could I just say as well, happy Father's Day, dad! Just won

:39:50. > :39:54.the race for you. He's going to be very proud. Get yourself warm.

:39:54. > :39:58.know, it's freezing. I'm going to bring in the big lad behind you,

:39:58. > :40:02.Brett Morse, who is just turn a great job in that the discus. From

:40:02. > :40:05.the sublime to the ridiculous. 6th place, will forget the distance

:40:05. > :40:11.because of the conditions, but you must be pleased with your

:40:11. > :40:17.performance? I was ranked 7th, I came 6thth. So I got an extra point.

:40:17. > :40:22.I told Charles I would get seven points last night, I was right.

:40:22. > :40:27.just be short of the A standard, that must be the next target?

:40:27. > :40:30.Training was going really well, the competition was going well. I had a

:40:30. > :40:40.little strain, now I'm back and hopefully I'll get that standard.

:40:40. > :40:45.

:40:45. > :40:49.Great stuff for the team, go back front. 305 points. That performance

:40:49. > :40:53.from Charlene Thomas has extended our lead over the Ukraine. Looking

:40:53. > :40:56.better and better for Great Britain. El take your attention down to the

:40:56. > :40:59.relegation battle, it switched round again. The Czech Republic are

:40:59. > :41:06.finding themselves in the bottom three again.

:41:06. > :41:09.An ecstatic Charlie in Thomas. The interesting thing in that interview

:41:09. > :41:17.was that she looked at the field and she said, I think I can win

:41:17. > :41:21.I think it's the type of race, she's always going to be a danger.

:41:21. > :41:24.I was stayed on Saturday, you know, some people might not know you very

:41:24. > :41:28.well. Some of them might have thought, who is Charlene Thomas?

:41:28. > :41:32.Not knowing what a danger she could be. As the race went on, the only

:41:32. > :41:35.thing I was worried about, she alluded to, is where she was

:41:35. > :41:39.putting herself. She was in a terrible position with 500 to go.

:41:39. > :41:42.She tried to get out a couple of times, but she didn't panic. When

:41:42. > :41:46.you are in great shape, sometimes you think, OK, I didn't get to

:41:46. > :41:49.where I want today, but let's wait for the gaps to appear. She knew

:41:49. > :41:53.she needed to get closer. She almost got tripped, some pushing

:41:53. > :41:57.and shoving down the back straight. Then she made a good decision going

:41:57. > :42:01.around the top bend to slip inside the tall athlete from Belarus,

:42:01. > :42:05.going backwards. Then she is in a position to do damage on the home

:42:05. > :42:09.straight. Well done to her. A bubbly character, as you have all

:42:09. > :42:15.realised. She works very closely with her husband and her training

:42:15. > :42:18.group. It's been a tough year for her last year, after a good year in

:42:18. > :42:22.2009. It's great to see her come back and has such a big victory.

:42:22. > :42:25.get the feeling from speaking to her, the way that a training has

:42:25. > :42:29.been going, that she censor she could do some Olympics through the

:42:29. > :42:34.air and perhaps make an impact in the world championships? The point

:42:34. > :42:44.I'm trying to make with Charlene is if she can add quick times do this,

:42:44. > :42:47.she's confident she can, if she can get in that 4.12 region, it when

:42:47. > :42:50.Liz being able to go to the major championships and just run fast,

:42:51. > :42:55.you have to get through the heats, the semi-final and then see what

:42:55. > :42:58.happens in the final. I think Charlene is well-equipped to do

:42:58. > :43:03.that. We are now going to go to the men's

:43:03. > :43:13.triple jump. We hope to see Phillips Idowu and Teddy Tamgho,

:43:13. > :43:19.

:43:19. > :43:25.but we can catch up with who is Adeoyin. His first senior

:43:25. > :43:32.international appearance. That appears to be around about the 15-

:43:33. > :43:39.metre mark. A finalist in the world junior championships last year.

:43:39. > :43:44.Heaps of potential. Giving away quite a bet on the board. Nathan

:43:44. > :43:53.Douglas, we wish him a speedy recovery after suffering an

:43:53. > :44:03.horrific injury, falling through a box in Italy after appearing in

:44:03. > :44:17.

:44:17. > :44:24.already cleared this distance. So, Emma Perkins finished in 11th

:44:24. > :44:32.position, 1.725 was her best clearance. Three failures at one-

:44:32. > :44:42.metre 80. So, two points for the British team, as predicted. It's a

:44:42. > :44:48.

:44:48. > :44:54.return to athletics after taking high jump competition in these

:44:54. > :45:04.difficult conditions. The track will be slippery. Athletes making

:45:04. > :45:24.

:45:25. > :45:34.relegation zone, every point will lower leg. We saw Emma Kerr King's

:45:35. > :45:38.

:45:38. > :45:48.doing the same thing. -- Emma Perkins. The athletes taking

:45:48. > :45:48.

:45:48. > :45:58.shelter, trying to keep warm. The Spanish record-holder both indoors

:45:58. > :46:15.

:46:15. > :46:25.and outdoors. World indoor silver Those athletes will have another

:46:25. > :46:29.

:46:29. > :46:34.attempt with the bar set at one point 89. Remains in third place.

:46:34. > :46:38.Just for macro fouls total will be committed during the competition in

:46:38. > :46:43.this team format event. On track for middle-distance,

:46:43. > :46:53.British men's sprinting has a new name, a Danny Talbot, just 20.

:46:53. > :46:54.

:46:54. > :46:59.Explosive form already in both the How excited are you to be here

:46:59. > :47:04.representing Great Britain? I am very excited. First outdoor

:47:04. > :47:09.competitions for the senior team. It is so real going to relay

:47:09. > :47:13.practice with the Olympic champions like Marlon Devonish and Christian

:47:13. > :47:17.Malcolm. We knew come into this team event, do you feel any extra

:47:17. > :47:23.pressure? Would you have preferred to have had a couple of other

:47:23. > :47:28.competitions before this? I didn't realise until I was on the bus with

:47:28. > :47:31.Andy Turner, and he said it is a team event so the pressure is on. I

:47:31. > :47:36.am trying to see it as just another race with more fans and television

:47:36. > :47:41.coverage. What are your expectations in terms of the race,

:47:41. > :47:45.where do you think you will finish? When I am on the start line

:47:45. > :47:50.hopefully I can win, I want to win. There are 11 other athletes capable

:47:50. > :48:00.of running well. I will be respectful on the start line, not

:48:00. > :48:08.

:48:08. > :48:13.just assume I will win. But I will headwind and the bad news for Danny

:48:13. > :48:21.Talbot, Christophe Lematre, starting better than he has been

:48:21. > :48:31.doing in recent years. He is in the lane inside of him. He won't want

:48:31. > :48:38.

:48:38. > :48:47.the flying Frenchman to go past him seen in the women's 100-metre

:48:47. > :48:57.hurdles, being in heat to one was not a disadvantage. We have had

:48:57. > :49:09.

:49:09. > :49:19.for the Polish athlete. Into a big head wind, so there are some good

:49:19. > :49:24.

:49:24. > :49:27.times to beat. In that heat, they have to put a reserve in.

:49:27. > :49:37.Horrendous for the Ukraine. Let's hope Danny Talbot can take

:49:37. > :49:53.

:49:53. > :49:59.advantage of it. There is the line- seeing this guy. UK indoor champion

:49:59. > :50:09.earlier this year. Already he has won 20.54, which is a very good

:50:09. > :50:18.

:50:18. > :50:23.There is a very good 200-metre runner rubbing his hands, Christian

:50:23. > :50:28.Malcolm. So very nearly the European champion last year. Just

:50:28. > :50:38.pipped at the Pollitt -- picked up the post by it the Frenchman in

:50:38. > :50:50.

:50:51. > :51:00.special here for Great Britain? Let's not forget about the Swede.

:51:01. > :51:08.

:51:08. > :51:17.European silver-medallist over 200 wind dropped a big. The Frenchman

:51:17. > :51:22.flying at the moment. The Great Britain athlete has run a good bend.

:51:22. > :51:30.The Frenchman is striding away. Can than a Talbot get in the points for

:51:30. > :51:35.Great Britain? Danny Talbot in third place. 20.29, a new

:51:35. > :51:39.Championship record in this European team Championship. Into a

:51:39. > :51:44.big head wind and it won't be too long before the Frenchman goes sub

:51:44. > :51:52.20 seconds. Great run by the Frenchman, he does the sprint

:51:52. > :51:57.double. What about the points for Great Britain Steve? I will talk

:51:57. > :52:01.about him first of all because we need to combine the two races. I

:52:01. > :52:09.think Danny target will end up with 4th overall. People will read the

:52:09. > :52:17.time around the world and think that the Frenchman has ran 20.28,

:52:17. > :52:22.but it is cold and it is wet and a strong headwind. That left arm of

:52:22. > :52:27.his, if he can get it connected to the rest of his body, he will be

:52:28. > :52:32.flying. He is not pretty at times, but look at the Strand he has got.

:52:32. > :52:37.Keeps driving all the way through. I thought Danny Toll Bar run pretty

:52:37. > :52:43.well, look as though he might get second place. -- Danny told it. I

:52:43. > :52:49.think he will be 4th over all. But, for the youngster it is a big race

:52:49. > :52:55.to come into, your first Great Britain international. He keeps it

:52:55. > :53:02.together pretty well. Holds his form and reasonably well. He has

:53:02. > :53:07.already ran 20.54 this year. He is hoping to get a little bit quicker.

:53:07. > :53:15.He is a bright talent for Great Britain. What about the Frenchman?

:53:15. > :53:19.That was a wonderful performance given the conditions. He is on his

:53:19. > :53:24.way up towards the mixed zone. I'm sure Jonathan will catch up with

:53:24. > :53:34.him. I cannot wait to see the Frenchman in ideal conditions

:53:34. > :54:01.

:54:01. > :54:06.Danny, in your interview with Steve Cram you said you would approach it

:54:06. > :54:12.just like another race. How did it feel when you're out there? I tried

:54:12. > :54:17.to do that, but it is completely different. I was standing next to

:54:17. > :54:21.the Frenchman, and he seemed pretty big. I think I handled it OK.

:54:21. > :54:25.thought you ran a good race. When you look at the lane line-up you

:54:25. > :54:30.must have been nervous that the Frenchman would go past two like a

:54:30. > :54:35.shot pretty quickly? I was, but I like being on the outside. In my

:54:35. > :54:41.head I think if they do not pass me, I will win. He did not bother me

:54:41. > :54:47.too much. You have burst into the scene at Loughborough, you have

:54:47. > :54:57.done a quick 100, also the 200 as well. I was not expecting it to

:54:57. > :54:59.

:54:59. > :55:04.come out as quickly. Her was not expecting to run that quickly.

:55:04. > :55:09.has it been being part of the set up with the British team, a unique

:55:09. > :55:12.atmosphere? Brilliant, training with guys like Christian Malcolm

:55:13. > :55:15.and Marlon Devonish, learning from them has been great. I have really

:55:15. > :55:22.enjoyed it. enjoyed it.

:55:22. > :55:26.Well done. The men's 5,000 metres sees Helen

:55:26. > :55:35.Clitheroe after a brilliant performance in Paris. -- the

:55:35. > :55:41.women's. Sarah Proctor, women's long jump,

:55:41. > :55:46.tough conditions? Very tough. I'm used to wild weather, so this was a

:55:46. > :55:52.harsh will come. Your teeth are chattering. You have been in good

:55:52. > :55:57.form, so you must be pretty pleased despite what happened today about

:55:57. > :56:02.what kind of shape you were in? Alan Marseilles am happy, but I

:56:03. > :56:08.could not control the conditions. I had to make do with what I had. I

:56:08. > :56:16.just went for it as best as I can. We are in an interesting situation,

:56:16. > :56:20.you are now competing for Britain because how excited are you to

:56:21. > :56:24.perhaps compete in the Olympic Games? I am ecstatic. I have to

:56:24. > :56:29.thank the Great Britain team for welcoming me. I will do my best to

:56:29. > :56:32.improve and make them proud. I will represent them as best as I can.

:56:33. > :56:39.It's great to have you on board, bit of a disappointment today but

:56:39. > :56:49.it will looking forward to watching you over the next year or so.

:56:49. > :56:58.Not quite Anguilla is it? The gap is now 22 points between Great

:56:58. > :57:03.Britain and the Ukraine. The gap getting bigger at the bottom

:57:03. > :57:06.between Belarus and the Czech Republic in terms of relegation.

:57:06. > :57:11.One of the highlights of the afternoon coming up, the women's

:57:11. > :57:17.5,000 metres with Helen Clitheroe. She did scale the heights in March

:57:17. > :57:22.in Paris in the Euro indoor 3,000 metres.

:57:22. > :57:25.Helen Clitheroe gets the gold. Good Helen Clitheroe gets the gold. Good

:57:25. > :57:28.on you Helen Clitheroe! What a performance. Helen, the last time

:57:28. > :57:34.we saw you wearing a British vest was probably the happiest moment

:57:34. > :57:43.you have had running for Great Britain, in Paris back in March?

:57:43. > :57:50.It's was a very special day. It has been a nice few months just getting

:57:50. > :57:54.that since then. It has been AA good motivator as well to focus on

:57:54. > :57:58.this summer and believe in what I am doing in terms of the longer

:57:58. > :58:02.distance training is working. My dream before them performances was

:58:02. > :58:10.keep going until 2012 and that is still what I want to do. I am

:58:10. > :58:12.taking it as it comes and enjoying it. In amongst all that, you're

:58:12. > :58:17.here in another European team championships, you know what it

:58:17. > :58:22.takes and the sort of races you get. Are you a quick enough to do with a

:58:22. > :58:30.slower, tactical 5,000 metres? hope so. I have got to learn how to

:58:30. > :58:33.run 5,000 as well how to run a fast 5,000. It is a good experience. If

:58:33. > :58:38.I just race the race and be competitive and win it, it will be

:58:38. > :58:43.a very good experience even if the time is in great. I think I have

:58:43. > :58:50.got to be more patient in the longer races and not be so up there

:58:50. > :58:54.running wide and pushing it on. These are things I have learnt. It

:58:54. > :58:58.will be good experience in a good way to start my campaign in the

:58:58. > :59:04.5,000. We will get to that race shortly

:59:04. > :59:10.but alongside me we have Christopher a nature of France.

:59:10. > :59:17.Even the more impressive 200 metres in those conditions? Of course, to

:59:17. > :59:24.run a bit of a very good time. It is only Mike second team

:59:25. > :59:30.championships. -- 200 metres. a performance like that into the

:59:30. > :59:40.wind and in the rain, how fast do you think you might be able to run?

:59:40. > :59:41.

:59:41. > :59:51.That for me could be easily sub 20? If it is good conditions today, I

:59:51. > :59:54.

:59:54. > :59:59.think I can run faster. I'm Merry thankful for this race. Outstanding

:59:59. > :00:06.work, it has been a pleasure to work, it has been a pleasure to

:00:06. > :00:11.watch you. I think Jonathan should take some

:00:11. > :00:21.French lessons. We should help him out a little bit. He was impressive

:00:21. > :00:24.

:00:24. > :00:34.It is a pretty tough field for It is a pretty tough field for

:00:34. > :00:45.

:00:45. > :00:53.very well indeed. She has run against them at different distances,

:00:53. > :00:56.3000 metres, the steeplechase, and now the 5000m as well. Can she take

:00:57. > :01:03.this European team title after winning that European gold indoors

:01:03. > :01:09.in that wonderful performance in Paris? A very steady pace early

:01:09. > :01:13.doors, as they come through. Helen Clitheroe, every time we have

:01:13. > :01:18.interviewed her over the last few months, she has always been smiling.

:01:18. > :01:23.I am so pleased for the athlete, as everybody is in British athletics,

:01:23. > :01:28.37 years old and running better than she has ever done. I guess

:01:28. > :01:33.when you are enjoying your performances, things can snowball,

:01:33. > :01:40.things can get even better. When you think that she warned what was

:01:40. > :01:47.the European Cup competition way back in 2000 in Gateshead, it has

:01:47. > :01:50.been a phenomenal career. She may get back to Gateshead for the third

:01:50. > :01:57.time in this European team championship competition. Don't

:01:57. > :02:01.tell her that. I think 2012 is as far as she is looking. It has been

:02:01. > :02:07.a great season so far. There was a slight disappointment with her

:02:07. > :02:12.performance in Oslo in the 10,000m event. She ran really well at the

:02:12. > :02:17.Manchester run, we saw that on the BBC, and she was disappointed not

:02:17. > :02:27.to have run faster. It was very hot that day in Oslo, but not so today.

:02:27. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:56.We have a very slow pace in this the women's high jump. The only

:02:56. > :03:06.

:03:06. > :03:11.remaining athlete in the attempt? No, not to be. There is at

:03:11. > :03:21.the victor in the women's high jump competition, maximum points for the

:03:21. > :03:22.

:03:22. > :03:32.Swedish team. Emma Perkins finishing down in 11th place. Two

:03:32. > :03:38.

:03:38. > :03:48.points for the British team, but nice sportsmanship between these

:03:48. > :03:52.

:03:52. > :03:57.been pretty slow. The Spanish athlete has picked it up and is

:03:57. > :04:02.going a little quicker now, but they are running out side 16 minute

:04:02. > :04:08.pace which is pretty slow. That won't faze Helen, she said she just

:04:08. > :04:13.wants to get to know these longer distances a little better. It is

:04:13. > :04:17.different on the track. Even the 10,000m she ran in Oslo, she had

:04:17. > :04:21.run a 10 kilometre race on the roads are a few weeks before that,

:04:21. > :04:28.and she said it takes a lot out of you. It is a very different

:04:28. > :04:32.psychological Excise, you have 25 laps and it is different from doing

:04:32. > :04:37.10 kilometres on the road. Helen has always equipped herself well

:04:37. > :04:41.coming into races, she always gives 100%. I think this is the sort of

:04:41. > :04:45.race I bet she was watching Charlene Thomas as well and

:04:45. > :04:55.thinking wouldn't it be great to get a victory here. There are some

:04:55. > :05:00.good athletes in here. Felix as Portugal, and the tall figure from

:05:00. > :05:08.Poland on the inside, but Helen has still got some pace in her legs as

:05:08. > :05:18.we saw in Paris and that could stand her in good stead in this

:05:18. > :05:36.

:05:36. > :05:44.race. Checa, Leading the group, the Russian in second place. It is a

:05:44. > :05:52.tough prospect, but we have seen the Portuguese athlete in 4th place

:05:52. > :05:56.running just behind Helen. A nice title to have European indoor

:05:56. > :06:04.champion. A very steady pace coming down towards the line this time.

:06:04. > :06:14.They will have seven laps to go and it is still playing with checker

:06:14. > :06:17.

:06:17. > :06:23.leading. -- Checa. She has been running the Marathon's for a few

:06:23. > :06:26.years now with good effect. The Ethiopians and Kenyans dominate and

:06:26. > :06:33.run very fast times, and I think the marathon presents a better

:06:33. > :06:43.option. Joanne Brady has already decided that is where her future

:06:43. > :06:55.

:06:55. > :07:00.better, this is more in her territory. The leader is just

:07:00. > :07:10.pushing things on a little bit, has a little look behind to see what

:07:10. > :07:16.

:07:16. > :07:21.effect it is having. Stretching them a little bit. Zadorozhnaya,

:07:21. > :07:31.always a danger. She looks in good shape this year. Just inside 72 for

:07:31. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:42.recognisable because of her running style, Helen to the road just

:07:42. > :07:49.behind her. -- Helen Clitheroe just behind her. The Portuguese athlete

:07:49. > :07:56.is part of a very strong Portuguese cross country outfit. They have won

:07:56. > :07:59.team gold at the last three championships, but now the top

:07:59. > :08:03.three include our very own pressures Helen Clitheroe.

:08:03. > :08:08.Beginning to move away from everyone else. The Lapps have been

:08:08. > :08:14.increasing in pace a little bit over the last 1500m. Now the

:08:14. > :08:18.Spaniard really pushing on. I have got to say, I am a little surprised

:08:18. > :08:28.that some of the others have not been able to go with this. The pace

:08:28. > :08:30.

:08:30. > :08:40.has moved on, but they are still not breaking 70 seconds for a lap.

:08:40. > :08:45.

:08:45. > :08:53.When you look at the likes of Mockenhaupt, she has run some good

:08:53. > :08:57.races before. But it is good news for Britain and for Helen Clitheroe.

:08:57. > :09:04.All of a sudden and the Spaniard has kicked in again. I am looking

:09:04. > :09:11.down the back straight and the gap has suddenly appeared. She is

:09:11. > :09:15.keeping his pace going, winding it up again. It was a 71 in the

:09:16. > :09:25.previous lap and Helen has decided she can't go with that. She has

:09:26. > :09:39.

:09:39. > :09:46.decided to stay with Zadorozhnaya. She hasn't given up the chase on

:09:46. > :09:49.the leader at all. Just going through the line with four laps to

:09:49. > :09:55.go. It will certainly be interesting to see what the split

:09:55. > :10:00.was for the last 800m or so because the leader really started to kick

:10:00. > :10:08.early. It has just been a gradual winding up but it meant the

:10:08. > :10:13.previous 1000 metres she has run in three minutes. After 3.15 and a 3.5,

:10:13. > :10:19.it is hard for athletes if you are not in great shape, it is a big

:10:19. > :10:29.shift. She has done a good job of almost stealing a march, and now

:10:29. > :10:32.

:10:32. > :10:35.still continuing to go away from Helen Clitheroe. Interestingly, of

:10:35. > :10:39.course Helen Clitheroe still the British record holder in the

:10:39. > :10:44.steeplechase but I think she has given that event a miss now and

:10:44. > :10:49.concentrating on the Flat. Just looking so strong, so much better,

:10:49. > :10:55.so much spring in her legs. As Steve was saying earlier, she has

:10:55. > :11:05.got a sprint finish. She started her career as a 1500m runner. The

:11:05. > :11:10.

:11:10. > :11:19.Russian just moving ahead of Helen once again. Zadorozhnaya and Helen

:11:19. > :11:29.well ahead of everyone else. There is about a 200m gap between them

:11:29. > :11:33.

:11:33. > :11:37.and others in the picture. They are a long way behind the leader.

:11:38. > :11:42.Zadorozhnaya, just beginning to put a distance between herself and

:11:42. > :11:47.Helen Clitheroe. This is a real dominant performance, to do it on

:11:47. > :11:53.her own in these conditions. It is still windy and she has continued

:11:53. > :11:56.to pick up the pace. There was no big lab, no kind of breakaway.

:11:56. > :12:00.Unfortunately Helen Clitheroe is being broken at the moment, and she

:12:00. > :12:10.will have to stick to her task as 4th place is not that far behind

:12:10. > :12:14.now. The leader has got faster and faster, not in big chunks. She had

:12:14. > :12:19.a couple of 72nd laps and it has been enough to do real damage. You

:12:19. > :12:23.can see Helen Clitheroe struggling now. She can see the gap between

:12:23. > :12:32.herself and Felix is about 20 metres, maybe not that far. She

:12:32. > :12:37.keeps looking behind. She needs to stick to her task now. There is the

:12:37. > :12:42.raised for 4th place. They can use each other and work with each other

:12:42. > :12:47.to get closer to Helen. They have got about 700 metres, a little bit

:12:47. > :12:57.less now. Helen has got to keep pushing on, she doesn't want to

:12:57. > :13:05.

:13:05. > :13:15.come under attack in the last lap. Zadorozhnaya, a clear head now.

:13:15. > :13:17.

:13:17. > :13:21.That is the last 300 metres. The leader ran the perfect race. Our

:13:21. > :13:31.interest does not lie with her, it is what is going on behind her by

:13:31. > :13:41.

:13:41. > :13:49.place. Helen is just picking it up, if nothing else she will be heading

:13:49. > :13:59.for a personal best which goes all the way back to 2008 at 15.49. She

:13:59. > :14:10.

:14:10. > :14:15.is much better than that. Checa, she has won this race in fine style.

:14:16. > :14:20.She's waving, maybe she has spotted someone in the crowd she knows. She

:14:20. > :14:26.is lapping people, and has put in a very impressive performance, the

:14:26. > :14:32.Spaniard. She undoubtedly can look forward to the rest of this year.

:14:32. > :14:36.15.16 the winning time. The Russian in second place, and Helen

:14:37. > :14:44.Clitheroe will end up in third and well inside her previous personal

:14:44. > :14:51.best. 11 for Russia, 10 points for Great Britain, Germany have to

:14:51. > :14:57.settle for 4th, and Felix of Portugal coming in 5th. 5000m are

:14:57. > :15:02.never easy, 12 1/2 laps. The way the race was run after the very

:15:02. > :15:05.slow start, winding up, there is a tough way to run and Helen had to

:15:05. > :15:10.work really hard the last couple of laps to hold on to the third place

:15:10. > :15:20.she had established. It is all a learning process that these longer

:15:20. > :15:45.

:15:45. > :15:52.under way. The second round. Currently in 6th position. She

:15:52. > :16:00.likes that one. Oh my goodness! That will threaten the 60-metre

:16:00. > :16:06.mark. Fantastic performance in these positions -- conditions.

:16:06. > :16:11.Coming back from a doping suspension in the Arab pean

:16:11. > :16:16.Championships in 2006 will stop working her way back into form.

:16:17. > :16:25.Becomes and to the competition. The first 60-metre throw of the

:16:25. > :16:35.afternoon. She is in first place. The results of the women's high

:16:35. > :16:57.

:16:57. > :17:05.Nicholls representing Great Britain. -- Jade and Nichols. Got a no mark

:17:05. > :17:15.in the first round. That saved, just inside the sector. Approaching

:17:15. > :17:18.

:17:18. > :17:24.55 metres. Not threatening that type of distance this afternoon.

:17:24. > :17:29.She is in 8th place. Helen Clitheroe alongside meat. 10.

:17:29. > :17:34.The the team, a personal best, how would you assess that performance?

:17:34. > :17:39.I am reasonably pleased. I think I got better than what was predicted

:17:39. > :17:45.in terms of points. In terms of competitiveness I would like to

:17:45. > :17:50.have hung on to the first two runners than I did. It is my first

:17:50. > :17:55.serious 5,000. I have got to learn the event and get used to it. I

:17:55. > :17:59.think I can run the qualifying time and hope to do that suits. How much

:17:59. > :18:06.different is it, you have done the steeplechase, the middle distance

:18:06. > :18:11.and then go 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres, how have you found that?

:18:11. > :18:15.found the 10,000 quite tough, but not as bad as I thought it would be.

:18:15. > :18:22.Mentally I have been quite strong. It has taken me a while to recover

:18:22. > :18:28.from that, to be honest. I have got my legs back after that. I'm not

:18:28. > :18:34.put off, I believe there is more to come. When you think back to March,

:18:34. > :18:39.the glory of the 3,000 metres, are you thinking twice about this

:18:39. > :18:46.change up? Not at all, it did not like the steeplechase. I have only

:18:46. > :18:52.been training for these events since November. I have been running

:18:52. > :18:55.very well, I have run a very good 10,000 on the road. I need to get

:18:55. > :19:04.my head down and do a bit more specific training for five Kate

:19:04. > :19:14.Ford stock I did a 10,000 two weeks ago. I obviously need to work on

:19:14. > :19:33.

:19:33. > :19:39.that and hopefully the time will lead over the Ukraine as we head

:19:39. > :19:49.towards the final track events shortly. Round three of the men's

:19:49. > :19:53.triple jump. Currently in 9th place. He is predicted a last place finish

:19:53. > :19:58.and that appears to be a similar type of distance. Not happy from

:19:58. > :20:08.that reaction. He is 9th because there are athletes behind him who

:20:08. > :20:13.

:20:13. > :20:20.have yet to register a mark. They have been two no marks from the

:20:20. > :20:24.Polish and the Russian, so that shows the importance of executions.

:20:24. > :20:34.Getting his chance because Phillips Idowu withdrew, Nathan Douglas is

:20:34. > :20:40.

:20:40. > :20:46.not healthy. It is still looking OK. 16 points in the men's triple and

:20:46. > :20:56.the women's discus. Still plenty to play for and. Continued to be

:20:56. > :21:04.

:21:04. > :21:11.steeplechase. Looking at their standings with the relay to come as

:21:11. > :21:21.well. There is an outside hope we can catch Germany for second place.

:21:21. > :21:32.

:21:32. > :21:37.in there, formerly of Morocco. Only 19 years old. First thing he did

:21:38. > :21:47.when he be came a Spanish citizen was to win the world junior cross-

:21:48. > :22:24.

:22:24. > :22:34.elements is Alan Bell. Himself a former high jumper. Now he is the

:22:34. > :22:53.

:22:53. > :22:59.competition last season performed was over the course of the last

:22:59. > :23:04.couple of years. It is these sort of events that do suit him, Steve?

:23:04. > :23:11.It is going to be tough for him here. He has two men in this race

:23:11. > :23:17.he finished in first and second position last year when he was 5th.

:23:17. > :23:21.And into that, the Spaniard, the former Moroccan, just 19 years of

:23:21. > :23:25.age, is a bit of a talents in the steeplechase. I think it will be

:23:25. > :23:32.tough for the Brits. If he gets close to the top five in this one

:23:32. > :23:42.he will have ran very well. He is a good competitor, we have seen him

:23:42. > :23:47.rise to the occasion in the past, so let's hope he can do it here.

:23:47. > :23:57.is Portugal at the moment. Portugal have come here with a strong team

:23:57. > :24:00.

:24:00. > :24:05.of distance runners. The Ukrainian, the big tall man just behind him,

:24:05. > :24:10.European silver at junior and under 23 level. So quite a lot of talent

:24:10. > :24:20.in this field. It is the sort of field where the Brits can get stuck

:24:20. > :24:20.

:24:20. > :24:25.in. At least looking to duplicate his performance of 12 months ago.

:24:25. > :24:29.Outside of his lifetime best this season, but capable of running that

:24:29. > :24:34.sort of performance today, despite the conditions. As they go down the

:24:34. > :24:38.back straight, that is where they have a following wind. It is in the

:24:38. > :24:48.home straight they have a vicious headwind. The Russian is looking

:24:48. > :24:50.

:24:50. > :24:54.quite strong. The Brits looking very steady at the moment. He won't

:24:54. > :24:58.be enjoying what is happening at the front. They are being stretched

:24:58. > :25:08.out. I think he would have preferred it to stay tactical for a

:25:08. > :25:10.

:25:10. > :25:14.couple of laps at the very least. The others are having to give chase.

:25:14. > :25:17.The pace is reasonably strong, but the British is right in the chasing

:25:17. > :25:24.group and he will have to stay in contact with back group for as long

:25:24. > :25:29.as he possibly can. If the group will allow Paolo to go away, they

:25:29. > :25:35.settle down. They are sort of giving chase, they are not sure

:25:35. > :25:41.what to do. They are five or six metres adrift, if not more. The

:25:42. > :25:46.Frenchman is not sure, do we go? Come on guys, are we getting in go?

:25:46. > :25:53.It is a bit early to let him get away. If it was the Russian who

:25:53. > :26:00.went out, in Florence. He went out so hard and he was leading for so

:26:00. > :26:04.long and than everybody caught him on the last lap. I always think it

:26:04. > :26:07.sticks in their minds when they remember people doing that. I was

:26:07. > :26:12.just laughing, I wouldn't have liked to have been that

:26:12. > :26:19.photographer who is getting absolutely soaked. He is probably

:26:19. > :26:23.soaking anyway, from the rain. Probably a sign that Roberto Paolo

:26:23. > :26:33.thinking then maybe I might settle back. And he tried to get away but

:26:33. > :26:38.

:26:38. > :26:45.that did not work. The Spaniard, just 19 years old in third place

:26:45. > :26:50.and moving steadily towards Alberto Paolo. 25 years old, still leading

:26:50. > :27:00.and trying to stretch the field. The Brits is just going past the

:27:00. > :27:03.

:27:03. > :27:09.Ukrainian. The next guy in front of them is to the Italian. Between the

:27:09. > :27:14.first man in that chasing group, and the Brits, there is about 25

:27:14. > :27:19.metres. The field is really strong out right now. It is because the

:27:19. > :27:29.Frenchman decided I am going to go after Paolo and not let him get

:27:29. > :27:36.

:27:36. > :27:46.away. The others have to follow might be over. The gaps are

:27:46. > :27:56.

:27:56. > :28:06.starting to appear and that Britain it is difficult to always gauge be

:28:06. > :28:07.

:28:07. > :28:11.guys can run in the 13.25 Regent. He is just drifting a little bit

:28:11. > :28:17.away at the moment. As they come round to the water jump, take a

:28:17. > :28:22.look at the camera angle that we have got. Look at that photographer

:28:22. > :28:25.as well. He is a glutton for punishment as well, loves the

:28:25. > :28:32.wetter weather. That will provide some interesting pictures

:28:32. > :28:39.afterwards. Very, very close to that water jump. However, they come

:28:39. > :28:45.round this time. The Frenchman looking strong, just taking a look

:28:45. > :28:55.at the giant screen. 800 metres to go. The Portuguese athlete has done

:28:55. > :29:02.

:29:02. > :29:12.what we expected. The Brits really has to dig in now. He has got his

:29:12. > :29:12.

:29:12. > :30:14.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 62 seconds

:30:15. > :30:24.moved back into the lead. But the Brits cannot get on level terms

:30:25. > :30:42.

:30:42. > :30:47.Uliczka. The Russian is there as well. What has he got left?

:30:47. > :30:57.Dandrieux of France, what has he got left? The tall Frenchman is

:30:57. > :31:05.

:31:05. > :31:12.coming away, he gets it. Luke Gunn finishes at around 8.424 or

:31:12. > :31:15.thereabouts. That is in 9th place, we hoped he would finish in 7th so

:31:15. > :31:22.we have dropped a couple of points in the course of that particular

:31:22. > :31:26.race. It was punishing though, wasn't it? So Luke Gunn in British

:31:26. > :31:31.colours once again, certainly hasn't disgraced, but shaking his

:31:31. > :31:37.head. He probably thinks he has not performed as well as he should have

:31:37. > :31:45.done. That is the final individual track event, just the relays left

:31:45. > :31:51.now. Both the British men and women have strong teams and will be

:31:51. > :31:56.hoping for good points. The third and final round of the men's triple

:31:57. > :32:06.jump, and this is the reigning Olympic champion from Beijing. What

:32:06. > :32:11.a welcome sight it is to see him competing once again. Appears to be

:32:11. > :32:21.similar to what he registered in the last round. He has got the

:32:21. > :32:24.white flag, but missed the entire season of 2010 due to a leg injury,

:32:24. > :32:28.and with him back in the mix, just three confirming that the balance

:32:28. > :32:33.of power in the triple jump event clearly lies on this side of the

:32:33. > :32:43.Atlantic. What type of Sheikh can he get in for the World

:32:43. > :32:50.

:32:50. > :32:55.Championships coming up? 16.33, a slight improvement. Pohle of

:32:55. > :33:03.Germany, down in 7th position. Bailed out in the middle of that,

:33:03. > :33:13.holds his head in anguish. His best effort will remain at 16.29. He has

:33:13. > :33:15.

:33:15. > :33:21.got the white flag but that is irrelevant. So the four time German

:33:21. > :33:31.champion, no improvement for him on that effort. 16.81 is the best mark

:33:31. > :33:55.

:33:55. > :34:00.in the competition so far. 16.29 steeplechase. Great Britain and

:34:00. > :34:07.Northern Ireland have four points with Luke Gunn. After the race, he

:34:07. > :34:11.spoke to Jonathan. How did you feel that race went? I am really

:34:11. > :34:18.disappointed, to be honest. I am in much better shape than that, I have

:34:18. > :34:23.not run that slow for some years. My legs felt good in warm up, and

:34:23. > :34:28.for the first few laps, but I don't know. It is one of those days I

:34:28. > :34:33.just felt a bit heavy. I am disappointed because this race is

:34:33. > :34:37.key positioning in the timetable, but I wish I had more to do. That

:34:37. > :34:41.is the tough thing, you can have a bad day on any other day and you

:34:41. > :34:47.walk away with your disappointment but here it is about the team as

:34:47. > :34:53.well. Last year I earned three more points than was predicted. Today I

:34:53. > :35:01.have probably even that out now, I have lost points and I have raced

:35:02. > :35:06.those guys week-in week-out. Unfortunately I was at the bottom

:35:06. > :35:12.with the points today. Good luck for the rest of the season. Yes,

:35:12. > :35:19.definitely. It is a long season. I am in good shape, I just need to

:35:19. > :35:23.tweak a few things and go back to the drawing board now. So that gap

:35:23. > :35:29.is 11 point now between Great Britain and the Ukraine. A good

:35:29. > :35:35.performance in the steeplechase for Germany, which has extended their

:35:35. > :35:41.lead over us in that event. The relays coming up, and I think

:35:41. > :35:46.Jonathan will hopefully give us some news on the pole vault. That

:35:46. > :35:50.event is taking place indoors. Jonathan will bring us up to date,

:35:50. > :35:55.but in the meantime a very happy Charles Van Commenee because

:35:55. > :35:59.Charlene Thomas has got maximum points in the women's 1500m. Well

:35:59. > :36:04.done to her. Steve mentioned about the pole-vault, the weather was

:36:04. > :36:09.appalling earlier on. It is better now but they made the decision to

:36:10. > :36:15.take it to an indoor facility half- an-hour away. It has taken longer

:36:15. > :36:20.than anticipated, and the result will probably not be in for about

:36:20. > :36:24.three hours. Russia will probably be awarded the first place anyway,

:36:24. > :36:32.without the pole vault result. The Germans I think are clear in second

:36:32. > :36:38.place, but between Great Britain and Ukraine it is much tighter so

:36:38. > :36:42.we will not know until later when we are offer the result. It is not

:36:42. > :36:47.an ideal situation but I feel for the athletes. They are probably

:36:47. > :36:51.warmed-up, had to relax again, they are uncertain. The event is

:36:51. > :36:55.difficult enough. Looking at the conditions now, you think that

:36:55. > :37:02.maybe if they had waited they could compete outside because the rain

:37:02. > :37:08.has eased off, but crucial points for Britain. Obviously the relays

:37:08. > :37:13.to come, we have high hopes for the British team. Potentially, if

:37:13. > :37:16.things go well for us and not so well for the Ukraine, we may get

:37:16. > :37:22.that there place presentation tonight. We are hoping that will

:37:22. > :37:27.happen because we have more than the ability to do enough but the

:37:27. > :37:31.relays are a nightmare for us. Anything can go wrong, you can drop

:37:31. > :37:38.battens, people can be pushed and shoved. We are hoping we deliver

:37:38. > :37:43.the goods. That's why I love it so much, it is so exciting. Yes, it

:37:43. > :37:49.keeps you on your toes. The relay baton is like soap in this weather.

:37:49. > :37:59.We will keep you posted for that. We are going now to the women's

:37:59. > :38:27.

:38:27. > :38:30.is there but it should be a pretty useful Swedish team. Certainly

:38:31. > :38:40.Swedish athletics is having a little bit of restructuring. That

:38:41. > :38:45.

:38:45. > :38:51.is not a fashion statement, it is strong quartet as well, I wouldn't

:38:51. > :39:01.be at all surprised if they would figure in the top three or four by

:39:01. > :39:01.

:39:01. > :39:44.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 62 seconds

:39:44. > :39:50.just joined us, that this is the combined result from two races, all

:39:50. > :39:55.based on time. Great Britain in the next race up against the likes of

:39:55. > :40:04.Russia of course. The great Russian team, the Germans, the Ukrainians,

:40:04. > :40:08.the Portuguese and the French. The first leg will be run in lanes, and

:40:08. > :40:18.then the stagger on wines on the second leg as we head into the back

:40:18. > :40:18.

:40:18. > :41:03.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 62 seconds

:41:03. > :41:08.useful runner. Magnusson of Sweden being chased by the Italian. Just

:41:08. > :41:12.inside her is the Belorussian. Here comes the Czech Republic, really

:41:12. > :41:17.piling the pressure on. It is obvious the Czech Republic are in

:41:17. > :41:21.the lead at the moment. A good changeover could see them well away

:41:21. > :41:26.at the end of this first leg. slippery baton almost being dropped

:41:26. > :41:32.to the floor by the Czech Republic, but safely away with it. We will

:41:32. > :41:42.have to keep an eye on their time because obviously the fastest teams

:41:42. > :41:45.

:41:45. > :41:51.theoretically go through, with Great Britain in the next heat.

:41:51. > :41:56.Belarus will want to be as close as possible. For them and the Czech

:41:56. > :42:03.Republic, there is just a few points separating the two teams and

:42:03. > :42:09.Belarus have a good relay squad. There runner has done a good job of

:42:09. > :42:15.bringing them right back into it. Now they enter the third leg.

:42:15. > :42:20.Czech Republic were under some pressure by Belarus and Italy, but

:42:20. > :42:25.certainly after a lead-off leg of around 51.4, that has kept them in

:42:25. > :42:29.the lead. But those three-team, reading from left to right - Czech

:42:29. > :42:34.Republic, Belarus now challenging for that first place, and Italy

:42:34. > :42:39.have certainly got away from the rest. It really is two separate

:42:39. > :42:43.races at the moment, so 200m to go on this penultimate leg. Now the

:42:43. > :42:46.Italians are challenging the Czech Republic, but don't forget on the

:42:46. > :42:56.last leg for the Czech Republic they have got a very good athlete

:42:56. > :43:04.indeed. Now Italy are in fact challenging for first. It is a

:43:04. > :43:10.great race developing here. It may well beat Italy in the lead,

:43:10. > :43:18.Belarus and the Czech Republic stride by stride on the last leg.

:43:18. > :43:26.So Italy are the surprise leaders. The Belorussian has a tremendous

:43:26. > :43:30.amount of experience. What can the Czech Republic do in response?

:43:30. > :43:34.Remember we have got Great Britain to go in the next race, that could

:43:34. > :43:40.be quicker - it has to be quicker if Great Britain want maximum

:43:40. > :43:46.points. Can it really be challenged? No response yet from

:43:46. > :43:52.the Czech Republic. Under 100m to go. It is Belarus now being

:43:52. > :44:02.challenged by the Czech Republic. Italy hanging on to first place,

:44:02. > :44:17.

:44:17. > :44:21.the Czech Republic just getting the result of this race in terms of

:44:21. > :44:31.the actual places, what we need is a time and that is what we have got.

:44:31. > :44:59.

:44:59. > :45:09.The Czech Republic will be keeping round. The Ukraine, and that man

:45:09. > :45:25.

:45:25. > :45:35.champions. Out towards the 70-metre mark. There is a changeable wind

:45:35. > :45:45.down on the triple jump runway. -- 17-metre mark. This man was the

:45:45. > :45:46.

:45:46. > :45:55.surprise winner last year. Decent long jumper as well. Can he defend

:45:55. > :46:05.his title successfully here? The Ukraine is in the tussle with Great

:46:05. > :46:05.

:46:05. > :46:51.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 62 seconds

:46:52. > :47:00.the Italian. That 4th round effort enough to give him the lead. That

:47:00. > :47:10.is the leader with that effort. Still no distance for the defending

:47:10. > :47:10.

:47:10. > :47:20.European team champion. It was another good performance for the

:47:20. > :47:43.

:47:43. > :47:48.Ukrainian seen in the women's Great Britain in 8th position.

:47:48. > :47:53.is quite interesting looking over towards the triple jump area. And

:47:53. > :47:58.the weather is bad here. But all of these guys have enjoyed a strong

:47:58. > :48:08.following wind on occasions as we saw with that the Italian, blown

:48:08. > :48:09.

:48:09. > :48:14.way out to 16.95. But, he is still waiting and so are we for the

:48:14. > :48:20.distance. Our hopes are that Nathan Douglas gets fit again as soon as

:48:20. > :48:26.possible. And that no serious damage has been done. But Russia

:48:26. > :48:30.leading by a big, big margin. Great Britain are still in third place.

:48:30. > :48:35.That result in the discus in particular, we have the triple jump

:48:35. > :48:41.to be factored in. That will mean for points there. When the triple

:48:41. > :48:46.jump gets back bidding, we will be no longer in third place. These

:48:46. > :48:55.relays are crucial. We won't know the results of the pole vault until

:48:55. > :49:05.most people are flying back home. Great Britain's women need to

:49:05. > :49:12.

:49:12. > :49:16.team. Kelly Sotherton was hoping she would be giving the chance. I

:49:16. > :49:26.think it is this a lead-off leg that some double-think is up for

:49:26. > :49:54.

:49:54. > :50:04.question over her, but not for her Kelly Massey to set us off in his

:50:04. > :50:14.4x4. Hopefully Russia will finish ahead of the Ukraine. The tussle is

:50:14. > :50:32.

:50:32. > :50:42.a personal best already this season. She has been given is difficult

:50:42. > :50:49.

:50:49. > :50:55.first leg. She has a couple of good athletes here. Inside, Kelly Massey

:50:55. > :51:00.as expected. The Russian has started very, very quickly. She has

:51:00. > :51:05.made inroads into the three athletes on the outside. Kelli

:51:05. > :51:15.Marcin needs to concentrate in the home straight. Keep going and stay

:51:15. > :51:23.

:51:23. > :51:28.Ukraine handing over first. Now we have Nicola Sanders. Former world

:51:28. > :51:38.Championship silver-medallist. Did not go so well last year. She has

:51:38. > :51:53.

:51:53. > :51:59.had such bad luck with injury, currently in 4th place. Trying to

:51:59. > :52:03.get on level terms with the German, and she is doing that. Has Nicola

:52:03. > :52:08.Sanders got the strength? I think Nicola is looking a bit rusty.

:52:08. > :52:13.Starting to come under pressure from behind. It is Russia leading

:52:13. > :52:18.things. Of the Ukraine with a poor change, lost about three or four

:52:18. > :52:24.metres. Lee McConnell can see the Ukrainian athlete a few metres

:52:24. > :52:34.ahead of her. France very much back in the race. Lee McConnell has been

:52:34. > :52:34.

:52:34. > :52:37.in good form. Things are starting to look a little bit better. We

:52:37. > :52:42.expected Russia to go away, but we were hoping Great Britain would be

:52:42. > :52:46.at least second. It is good to see McConnell going so well.

:52:46. > :52:51.European bar hundred metre individual champion in the lead.

:52:51. > :52:56.But look at Lee McConnell coming on strong in the home straight. Lee

:52:56. > :53:06.McConnell is running well this year, but she has come under criticism in

:53:06. > :53:07.

:53:07. > :53:14.the past. Great Britain in second place. I don't think it was a good

:53:14. > :53:17.run by the Russian. She allowed Lee McConnell to get close. What about

:53:17. > :53:21.Perry Shakes-Drayton. I little bit in no-man's-land but she has

:53:21. > :53:29.started out hard and not given any sort of a chance to the Ukraine

:53:29. > :53:33.team. The Ukraine is a very good athlete. Perry shakes straight in

:53:33. > :53:39.needs to concentrate. The Ukrainian has had to work hard to get onto

:53:39. > :53:43.her shoulder. Now she needs to respond. She needs to strengthen in

:53:43. > :53:50.that old Kashiwazaki home straight. Perry shakes straight in is running

:53:50. > :53:55.down the Russian team. It will be at least second. Russia just hangs

:53:55. > :54:00.on to win it. Great Britain in second place. The times are quicker

:54:00. > :54:04.than the first heat. Those positions will stand. Well done

:54:04. > :54:11.Perry shake straight and, almost beat Russia. Not many people get

:54:11. > :54:15.ahead of the Russian 4x4 relay teams. I'm not sure it was their

:54:15. > :54:20.strongest performance, but nonetheless it was a strong Russian

:54:20. > :54:27.team at the Brits put under pressure at the end. Most

:54:27. > :54:37.importantly, they finished ahead of the Ukraine. Don't we all love it

:54:37. > :54:42.Perry Shakes-Drayton? It was a tremendous run on the 4th leg. The

:54:42. > :54:47.Ukrainian, the winner of the individual 400, she thought she

:54:47. > :54:52.would easily take Perry Shakes- Drayton. She was having none of it.

:54:52. > :55:02.She was gaining on the Russian all the time. Another five a six metres,

:55:02. > :55:02.

:55:03. > :55:10.it would have taken her past the Russians. The Russians were tested.

:55:10. > :55:20.I've been we got the rest of the splits for the British team will

:55:20. > :55:25.stop I didn't think Turova ran very well. She did not look great on the

:55:25. > :55:30.third leg. Lee McConnell clocking the same as Perry shakes straight

:55:30. > :55:40.and, two great legs for the British quartet. Nicola Sanders might be

:55:40. > :55:41.

:55:41. > :55:45.slightly disappointed, but it is good to see her coming back. --

:55:45. > :55:55.Perry Shakes-Drayton. Over all a good second place. Almost taking

:55:55. > :56:03.

:56:03. > :56:09.maximum points. She is in great Perry Shakes-Drayton. And good to

:56:09. > :56:16.see McConnell running strongly. Very messy is developing into a

:56:16. > :56:23.fine lead-off runner. The -- Ceri Massey. Nicola Sanders is fit, and

:56:23. > :56:28.back on the track again. Nicola Sanders, a couple of years ago, she

:56:28. > :56:34.was top of the world. There is the result. It is the fastest time in

:56:34. > :56:44.Europe this year, but they have not run too many races. I'm sure the

:56:44. > :57:17.

:57:17. > :57:27.Russians would have expected to the place. So this man is the

:57:27. > :57:31.

:57:31. > :57:38.victor the Italy. He will take maximum points. The Briton finished

:57:38. > :57:45.in 10th in his first senior performance. Better than expected

:57:45. > :57:53.for him. He was predicted just one point. Confirmation, three. So

:57:53. > :57:59.gaining a valuable two. If you put those results into the computer,

:57:59. > :58:04.the triple jump and the women's 4x400 it gives us a match score of

:58:04. > :58:12.the Ukraine, two points ahead of the UK in third place. Another

:58:12. > :58:18.thing to update you on, we are bringing pole vault results by text.

:58:18. > :58:20.Five metres 20. Steve Lewis is over Five metres 20. Steve Lewis is over

:58:20. > :58:24.a height. Let's talk about the relay. A good performance from the

:58:24. > :58:29.women? I thought they did brilliantly. The

:58:29. > :58:32.first two legs were difficult. We saw Kelly Massey having to do the

:58:32. > :58:41.long first leg. But from then onwards they did well. Lee

:58:41. > :58:46.McConnell taking the gold through with a superb 400-metre run. And

:58:46. > :58:49.Perry was fantastic. We will come to her in a minute, Kelly Massey

:58:49. > :58:54.with a lot of responsibility, a very strong Russian inside her who

:58:54. > :58:59.we knew would go past her early. A lot of discipline and strength of

:58:59. > :59:05.character to keep her through to the line? She is developing very

:59:05. > :59:11.nicely. That squat has extended with the likes of Sharon Cox in

:59:11. > :59:16.there as well. We could do good things in the last couple of years.

:59:16. > :59:21.Nicola Sanders, I think her split was 52.4. She has been struggling

:59:21. > :59:27.with injury and since 2007 and the silver medal, it has been difficult

:59:27. > :59:31.hasn't it? It is tough for anybody to come back. Nicola is a quality

:59:31. > :59:35.athlete and she will look at that and say, I am here with the team

:59:35. > :59:40.and in the squad and don't the best I can do right now. It is great to

:59:40. > :59:49.see her here and winning. That is the most important thing, we see a

:59:49. > :59:54.good return. They are just behind us. It you can all get in in the

:59:54. > :59:59.order you ran. It will be helpful for me. Kelly, a lot of

:59:59. > :00:04.responsibility on your shoulders in the first leg? Obviously, the added

:00:04. > :00:10.pressure are the start. But it is just the same as doing a 400-metre

:00:10. > :00:14.race, but you are passing it on to somebody. Nicola, not as quick as

:00:14. > :00:20.you would have hoped for? I would have liked a bit faster, but it is

:00:20. > :00:24.nice to be out running again. It is my first 400 of the year. Nice to

:00:24. > :00:27.get it out of the way and hopefully move on to some more races. Where

:00:27. > :00:33.are you in terms of form and fitness because it has been a tough

:00:33. > :00:37.few years? I have had a few injuries but I feel fine now, so it

:00:37. > :00:47.is a case of getting race fit and I should be OK in August when it

:00:47. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:58.You are in great form, 50.5 I believe. Yes, a bit of traffic to

:00:58. > :01:02.come through but I am happy I handled it. Of course you were

:01:02. > :01:06.battling the Ukrainian for third place. Yes, the aim was to get

:01:06. > :01:09.ahead of her and give Perri Shakes- Drayton a chance on the last leg

:01:09. > :01:14.and she did fantastic. On the back straight you got caught a little

:01:14. > :01:20.bit, didn't you? The Russian was quite a long way ahead, the

:01:20. > :01:27.Ukrainian behind you, so judging pace was difficult? The commentator

:01:27. > :01:31.helped. I can't hear her, but I decided to maintain and give

:01:31. > :01:36.anything pick up and chased down the Russian Girl. I tried, I didn't

:01:36. > :01:41.get her, but I think it was a good effort by everybody. A couple more

:01:41. > :01:45.metres and you would have got first place. How difficult is it for you

:01:45. > :01:50.to run 400m when you are used to the hurdles because you seemed to

:01:50. > :01:56.get your pacing very good. I don't find it difficult, it is easier and

:01:56. > :02:00.it is fun. I was looking forward to doing this relay. There are no

:02:00. > :02:10.hurdles so I can just go for it. was a brilliant run and you might

:02:10. > :02:12.

:02:12. > :02:16.have made that last leg your own. Thank you! Happy Father's Day to my

:02:16. > :02:26.dad, and Chris my step dad. easier than sending a card, isn't

:02:26. > :02:36.

:02:36. > :02:42.into this, and the pole vault as we mentioned. Unfortunately the pole-

:02:42. > :02:47.vault result will come later this evening, as we said. Germany will

:02:47. > :02:57.be clear in second place undoubtedly. Ukraine have the two

:02:57. > :02:58.

:02:58. > :03:01.point advantage. Five metres 40 for Steven Lewis, we don't know what

:03:01. > :03:06.the Ukrainians are doing in the pole vault but we will come back to

:03:06. > :03:11.that. Let's talk than Nicola Sanders, world silver medallist

:03:11. > :03:17.four years ago, and like Abi Oyepitan she has been having a

:03:17. > :03:22.tough time. A torrid time. I have seen her train, she works very hard,

:03:22. > :03:26.but since her first injury she has really struggled. Again, getting

:03:26. > :03:30.the balance right in your training this is how many sessions you can

:03:30. > :03:40.put in a week, it is not easy and for the quarter mile as they need

:03:40. > :03:45.to be working hard. A lot still to be done for her. Lee McConnell, I

:03:45. > :03:55.think a very good leg. Her form has fluctuated over the last few years

:03:55. > :03:55.

:03:55. > :03:59.She looks very good indeed. After she finished running, she didn't

:03:59. > :04:03.collapse on her haunches, she was standing up and support in which

:04:03. > :04:06.means she is in great physical shape. I am looking forward to the

:04:06. > :04:12.trials for the World Championships, it will be exciting across the

:04:12. > :04:22.board. Perry Shakes-Drayton is a delight, isn't she? There is almost

:04:22. > :04:25.

:04:25. > :04:29.NIA -- naivety about her. When you are young and you are doing well,

:04:29. > :04:32.it is a beautiful sport and you thoroughly enjoy being a part of it.

:04:32. > :04:38.We were screaming when we saw her closing down the Russian because it

:04:38. > :04:43.just goes to show that you can strike all the time when you feel

:04:43. > :04:47.you have got it in your legs. Athletics is easy when you are fit,

:04:48. > :04:53.healthy, you have a good winter behind you. The challenge is when

:04:54. > :04:58.you find those injuries, how you cope with it. Getting back from

:04:58. > :05:02.injuries is so difficult but Perri Shakes-Drayton is in the form of

:05:02. > :05:12.her life. She just has to keep doing it. It is now the men to go

:05:12. > :05:15.in the 4x400m. Steve Cram is calling this one. The British

:05:15. > :05:20.quartet know that the expectation will always be high for any men's

:05:20. > :05:26.4x400m team. Like the women, there is real competition for places in

:05:26. > :05:33.the squad now. No Martyn Rooney here, but we do have Michael

:05:33. > :05:43.Bingham, Richard Buck, and Andrew Steele will be leading them off on

:05:43. > :05:47.

:05:48. > :05:57.the first leg. Andrew Steele this time has been given the chance to

:05:58. > :05:58.

:05:58. > :06:05.lead. The first heat was won by Italy a few moments ago, so don't

:06:05. > :06:13.forget the Times are factored in from the first heat as well.

:06:13. > :06:23.Ukraine, this is the team we are watching. The Ukrainian is 20 years

:06:23. > :06:23.

:06:23. > :06:33.of age, going on the first leg. The Polish are always tough in the

:06:33. > :06:33.

:06:34. > :06:38.relay, it doesn't matter what names are in there. Andrew Steele. Conrad

:06:38. > :06:47.Williams will be second, then Michael Bingham and Richard Buck as

:06:47. > :06:52.I said. Then Russia, being led off by the man who won the individual

:06:52. > :06:58.event, Maksim Dyldin. The French team, in years gone by you would

:06:58. > :07:06.have seen them as a big threat. One of their key runners is out injured,

:07:06. > :07:16.but they could still be a big factor. Andrew Steele, only 46 pts

:07:16. > :07:22.

:07:22. > :07:32.17 so far this year. -- 46.17. If you were watching yesterday, you

:07:32. > :07:50.

:07:50. > :07:57.will know Conrad Williams didn't European team championship under

:07:57. > :08:04.way. Great Britain battling for third spot with the Ukraine. France

:08:04. > :08:11.has started very quickly in lane 8. Andrew Steele already coming under

:08:11. > :08:16.some pressure from the inside. He needs to get moving a little bit.

:08:16. > :08:21.What has Andrew Steele got here? He needs to get Great Britain really

:08:21. > :08:30.involved on this first leg, and needs to hand over the baton to

:08:30. > :08:34.Conrad Williams with no real gaps. France just about in the lead but

:08:34. > :08:39.it is very close. Let's see how they break on the back straight.

:08:40. > :08:44.Andrew Steele ran a very good first leg there, handing over to Conrad

:08:44. > :08:49.Williams. Williams yesterday ran the first 300 metres superbly, just

:08:49. > :08:54.blow up a little bit in the straight, but Great Britain are in

:08:54. > :09:01.a good position at the moment. France first, Russia second, Great

:09:02. > :09:05.Britain third. Michael Bingham on the next leg. Can Conrad Williams

:09:06. > :09:13.produce something on the straight here to try and put Michael Binyon

:09:13. > :09:20.in with a chance on the first leg? Conrad Williams is coming, under

:09:20. > :09:30.pressure from the Polish team. France, Russia, Poland, Michael

:09:30. > :09:34.

:09:34. > :09:40.Bingham in 4th place. Getting polish athlete, my goodness. It was

:09:40. > :09:44.very good use of the elbows, really pushed the Frenchman out of the way.

:09:44. > :09:48.It is Richard Buck the Great Britain on the final leg. Michael

:09:48. > :09:53.Bingham trying to give Great Britain the lead. Michael Bingham

:09:53. > :09:58.of course ran so well in New York a couple of weeks ago in the diamond

:09:58. > :10:05.lead grace. He is looking across at the Frenchman, which he shouldn't

:10:05. > :10:09.do. He should just concentrate. They lost a few metres in the last

:10:09. > :10:17.54 start the baton was thrown to Richard but it has all gone wrong

:10:17. > :10:23.in the space of six metres. Great Britain way back in last place.

:10:23. > :10:28.Also, you can't throw the baton. If he'd just left it on the ground and

:10:28. > :10:33.Richard Buck had picked it up, that would have been fine. Richard Buck

:10:33. > :10:38.didn't catch it but you can't throw the baton. It will be interesting

:10:38. > :10:44.to see if Great Britain get disqualified. Russia and France,

:10:44. > :10:50.and France have put a good performance in here. Schneider has

:10:50. > :10:56.done well for Germany to get them into third, so France when it,

:10:56. > :11:03.Russia's second. Richard Buck did his best, probably he knows as well

:11:03. > :11:07.that the like the Lord is Great Britain will be disqualified. Any

:11:07. > :11:11.chance of finishing third in his European team championship has

:11:12. > :11:16.pretty much disappear there. We don't know what has happened with

:11:16. > :11:21.the pole vault result yet, but that wasn't very good whatsoever from

:11:21. > :11:26.the British quartet. Michael Bingham, just watch this here. He

:11:26. > :11:33.took the baton, gets in a bit of a tussle with the Polish athlete, and

:11:33. > :11:42.the Frenchman gets the shawls in the back. In the home straight, he

:11:42. > :11:47.was tired. He picks it up and away he goes, a shambles. Yes, it was.

:11:47. > :11:53.Michael Bingham was very tired there. Watch closely. He turned to

:11:53. > :11:59.go, didn't get the baton, looked again. You can't do that, it is

:11:59. > :12:05.against the rules. In view of the fact Richard Buck ran 50.2 in the

:12:05. > :12:10.last leg, he realised it was a forlorn chase. There was no way

:12:10. > :12:15.Britain would figure in the final standings. A different angle on

:12:15. > :12:23.that change. Richard Buck just turned too quickly. Certainly

:12:23. > :12:27.Michael Bingham looked very tired. Look at the face and the body

:12:27. > :12:34.language of Michael Bingham. He knew it had all gone wrong. Not a

:12:34. > :12:40.good end, after a good couple of days for the British team.

:12:40. > :12:44.trustingly, the first raised the Czech Republic and Belarus were

:12:44. > :12:52.both disqualified. I am waiting to see if Great Britain have been

:12:52. > :12:55.disqualified, but they have not yet. You can't throw the baton,

:12:55. > :13:00.otherwise he would throw it down the home straight! You can't do

:13:00. > :13:06.that. Anyway, it wasn't good whichever where you look at it and

:13:06. > :13:10.it means the Ukraine will get more points than us. Italy were

:13:10. > :13:20.certainly quicker, and in fact we have been disqualified. It has just

:13:20. > :13:24.I think a disappointing end to what has been a good weekend overall for

:13:24. > :13:30.the British team. You said it earlier on, Collins. It is a bit

:13:31. > :13:36.like a bar of soap when it gets wet, that pattern. Yes because it is

:13:36. > :13:41.aluminium so what is very light but very slippery. If you don't get a

:13:41. > :13:49.full hand grip on that Batten, it can easily slip out of your hand.

:13:49. > :13:52.Talk about the technique. It is very different to the 100m relay.

:13:52. > :13:59.It was said that perhaps Richard Buck went away before he had made

:13:59. > :14:03.sure of it. In the 4x400m, the technique is more of a grabbing

:14:03. > :14:08.action, and you can see Richard turned around, he thought he had

:14:08. > :14:12.the baton in his hand. As he goes to grab it, he swings and turns

:14:12. > :14:15.around. That moves his cold shoulder, and if he does not have a

:14:15. > :14:20.shoulder, and if he does not have a full grip on it, it just slipped

:14:20. > :14:27.away from him. He feels he has got the baton right now, turns round,

:14:27. > :14:34.thinks he has got it. There is the bit of panic that sets in as well.

:14:34. > :14:38.Pick the baton up, throw it! It just causes mayhem. Especially in

:14:38. > :14:44.this very high pressured situation. I think the eagerness to get away,

:14:44. > :14:47.to catch up with the other runners. You can see Russia going away there,

:14:47. > :14:52.and I think at this stage we would not want to see that but it happens.

:14:52. > :14:55.They will be bitterly disappointed so it is just unfortunate. All the

:14:56. > :15:01.guys have worked so hard today because it was tough in these

:15:01. > :15:05.conditions. We knew what was going to be tight. There is pressure

:15:05. > :15:15.there. Obviously neck and neck with the Ukrainians for third place, and

:15:15. > :15:16.

:15:16. > :15:23.you do things that perhaps you Exactly, you summed it up very

:15:23. > :15:27.nicely. They will be very different -- disappointed. Richard will be

:15:28. > :15:32.taking it on himself and thinking that he has cost the team third

:15:32. > :15:36.place. This is what athletics is all about. You will live and you

:15:36. > :15:41.will learn and come back tomorrow and move on. It is probably the

:15:41. > :15:49.wrath of Charles they are fearing most. You mention that, he is just

:15:49. > :15:56.standing behind now. He Charles, thanks for speaking to us. A

:15:56. > :16:02.slightly Sauer note to end the European team championships on?

:16:02. > :16:07.is an anti-climax. All the athletes fought so hard for every point and

:16:07. > :16:11.then the last bit of the last event we get this. It is one of those

:16:11. > :16:15.things, I guess the pressure of going head-to-head with the Ukraine

:16:15. > :16:21.for a third place, maybe they were too anxious. Richard thought he had

:16:21. > :16:29.it and went too soon? Yes, he went too soon, it comes with that relay

:16:29. > :16:34.running. There is no excuse. sense from what you have said so

:16:34. > :16:40.far, of all you are content with the way the weekend has gone?

:16:40. > :16:44.I think they have been terrific with the team we came out. They

:16:44. > :16:49.have been some excellent performances today, Charlene Thomas

:16:49. > :16:53.and yesterday, Goldie Sayers especially. Some outstanding

:16:53. > :16:58.performances. But obviously it is a team event so you want to come home

:16:58. > :17:02.with a medal, which we didn't. will talk about some of the

:17:02. > :17:04.individual performances in the second, but some of the athletes

:17:04. > :17:09.make comments about the expectations you put on them. You

:17:09. > :17:14.have made it clear to the athletes what he wanted them to do and they

:17:14. > :17:24.sense that responsibility and the slight fear, I have to say? Every

:17:24. > :17:25.

:17:25. > :17:30.human being run as a bit faster with Thea! -- fear. It is also

:17:30. > :17:34.about raising interest but for the athletes for each other. It means

:17:34. > :17:39.nothing to anybody that at least say, we have to finish third. It

:17:39. > :17:47.means nothing. If you break it down to individual performances, it is

:17:47. > :17:53.more clear to everybody. Athletes want to get the extra point to make

:17:53. > :17:57.a point to the team. The one performance which has stood out

:17:57. > :18:03.from a British perspective has been what we saw today in the women's

:18:03. > :18:10.1,500 metres, Charlene Thomas. It was fantastic? It was, she has had

:18:10. > :18:15.a couple of difficult years. But being selected also in the last

:18:15. > :18:22.second, and then finishing in this manner, it was a really good run,

:18:22. > :18:26.they run of a warrior. That is how she is as a person, too. Let's go

:18:26. > :18:31.back to the first day, it started with the man you make team captain,

:18:31. > :18:36.Dai Greene. I remember him a couple of years ago, his first European

:18:36. > :18:40.team Championship, he has matured into a world-class athlete? He has,

:18:40. > :18:47.you can consider him as top three in the world at the moment. He did

:18:47. > :18:53.his job here for start he didn't give it all, he got the points in.

:18:53. > :18:57.He felt he had to produce, as team captain and he got the 12 points.

:18:57. > :19:02.Very professional. Another athlete in the 400-metre hurdles who

:19:02. > :19:07.finished off well, Perry Shakes- Drayton? She has the look and feel

:19:07. > :19:14.of an athlete who can go on and perhaps do some damage certainly in

:19:14. > :19:19.2012? Indeed, she has got that talent. She was not great yesterday

:19:19. > :19:27.in the 400-metre hurdles, the gap was to become a but she made it up

:19:27. > :19:35.today. You cannot ask for a better anchor runner in the relay than

:19:35. > :19:40.Perry. Phillips Idowu was not here, you don't want to go into too many

:19:40. > :19:44.details, but it is important to move on from this quickly, he is

:19:44. > :19:49.one of our best athletes and hopes. Clearly you don't want anything to

:19:49. > :19:54.distract from that? It is not a good situation and it needs

:19:54. > :20:00.addressing. I cannot address it from Stockholm, I have to be in

:20:00. > :20:04.London. That is first on the agenda. Thanks for speaking to us, and

:20:04. > :20:14.congratulations to the team. It is congratulations to the team. It is

:20:14. > :20:35.

:20:35. > :20:41.appreciated. is that Great Britain and Northern

:20:41. > :20:45.Ireland were disqualified. The team standings would still the pole

:20:45. > :20:49.vault to come. It is quite an intriguing situation. They have

:20:49. > :20:57.been taken away from here because of the range and they are competing

:20:57. > :21:02.indoors. We won't know the final placings. Steve Lewis, 5.40, we

:21:02. > :21:08.have heard he has clear at the first attempt. After having taken

:21:08. > :21:14.three attempts to get over 5.24 Stock the Ukraine in third place.

:21:14. > :21:18.292 points, they will go on the rostrum I suppose. Looking down at

:21:18. > :21:27.the stadium, when we arrive today, there will work meant getting the

:21:27. > :21:32.rostrum ready. -- work men. There is no doubt about the top two who

:21:32. > :21:37.will go up and get the team trophy and the second place. But the third

:21:37. > :21:47.place won't be presented because we don't have the final results in. A

:21:47. > :21:48.

:21:48. > :21:52.magnificent couple of days. The good news is edits the to Charles

:21:52. > :22:01.and he wasn't growling too badly. Andrew, you started, tell us about

:22:01. > :22:06.the first leg? I am returning to the GBE team after an extended

:22:06. > :22:16.hiatus. I felt like I ran pretty well, need to get my racing boots

:22:16. > :22:19.back on. It was a good leg and hopefully I did a good job. It was

:22:19. > :22:25.a high-stakes competition, the relay always his false start it

:22:25. > :22:28.certainly was, a lot at stake, neck and neck with Ukraine. I like my

:22:28. > :22:32.leg. It is the first time I have leg. It is the first time I have

:22:32. > :22:40.run the second leg at this level - macro level. I went out well and

:22:40. > :22:50.held my position. There is a lot of splash back from feet coming back

:22:50. > :22:56.

:22:56. > :23:00.on my face. Michael, let me come to you if I can squeeze across. Great

:23:00. > :23:07.form in New York, you brought that here. Are busily just talk us

:23:07. > :23:14.through that last changeover? a relay so you always expect it to

:23:14. > :23:24.be physical. I don't blame anybody but myself. I was strong enough and

:23:24. > :23:27.fast enough to run. I just didn't do it today. If we have a road

:23:27. > :23:35.traffic accident, it is always the guide coming from behind takes the

:23:35. > :23:40.blame, in terms of the relay who takes the blame there? Myself. Even

:23:40. > :23:44.if you come up from behind you are expected to watch and steered. Be

:23:44. > :23:47.patient. It is hard when you have two guys beside you and one in

:23:47. > :23:52.front of you. You cannot blame the circumstances, you have to deal

:23:52. > :23:56.with them. I did not do with them today. In terms of the rules, it

:23:56. > :24:01.you had left the baton on the floor and Richard picked it up, that was

:24:01. > :24:08.OK, not to throw it? Sometimes in the heat of the moment you do silly

:24:08. > :24:12.things. That is probably one of them. Hopefully I will get forgiven

:24:12. > :24:15.when we come back for the medal in August. Including the dropped from

:24:15. > :24:22.Richard Ford stock on your perspective that last changeover,

:24:22. > :24:26.talk us through it? Michael said it was him, but it was my job to make

:24:26. > :24:36.sure I have a good hand on the baton. I just pushed over the top

:24:36. > :24:41.of it and turn to run thinking I had it. Michael let go thinking I

:24:41. > :24:47.had it, and it went down. It is tough to always get a clean

:24:47. > :24:57.changeover. That area get quite crowded. It was just one of those

:24:57. > :24:57.

:24:57. > :25:00.things, I am really sorry. You say it is one of those things, and that

:25:00. > :25:03.the overall British team performance has been excellent and

:25:04. > :25:08.just put that one than to experience? I won't make that

:25:08. > :25:12.mistake again, especially in the World Championships when it counts.

:25:12. > :25:16.Hopefully we have learned from this and we will move on. Better luck

:25:16. > :25:18.next time. That ties of the athletics action

:25:18. > :25:28.That ties of the athletics action for this afternoon's. We are back

:25:28. > :25:47.

:25:47. > :25:50.One athlete who was not here this weekend was Mo Farah. Quite

:25:50. > :25:57.breathtaking early-season form with the British and European record in

:25:57. > :26:01.the 10,000 metres. Steve Cram as part of the British Olympic dream

:26:01. > :26:11.series has been out to America to see him and meet his family and

:26:11. > :26:22.

:26:22. > :26:26.have a look behind the scenes at Mo Farah has chastened the Hayward

:26:26. > :26:30.field track in what is now his home town to have a go up the British

:26:30. > :26:34.record. I don't think there is any bridges media, but he could not

:26:34. > :26:39.have found a better spot, a knowledgeable crowd on perfect

:26:39. > :26:49.conditions tonight. If he is in shape, he might just do it. --

:26:49. > :26:59.

:26:59. > :27:09.Go on! He has two miles of really hard running left. But at this pace

:27:09. > :27:11.

:27:11. > :27:21.he is going to smash the British record, and I mean smash it!

:27:21. > :27:24.

:27:24. > :27:34.Come on! Come on! Mo Farah is ticking away, look at this. It is

:27:34. > :27:38.

:27:38. > :27:43.not just a British record, it is phenomenal. Or unbelievable.

:27:43. > :27:46.Everyone is going to say, Mo Farah now has a chance of going to the

:27:46. > :27:50.World Championships with a genuine chance of winning a medal because

:27:50. > :27:55.you have beaten some good athletes here? It is all about training hard

:27:55. > :27:58.and focus. I want a world medal and I will keep working hard and today

:27:58. > :28:08.just shows if I can run a decent time, I should be able to mix in

:28:08. > :28:16.with them. Are you excited? Really excited. Have you got the actual

:28:16. > :28:26.key. There you go. Thanks very much Scotty. You have got a new house.

:28:26. > :28:28.

:28:28. > :28:31.These are the keys. You have got to see this room, it is his media room

:28:31. > :28:36.four-star I will have a massive television here. You can have a

:28:36. > :28:40.game of five-a-side in here. What they do say when he came room and

:28:40. > :28:44.said we are going to America? was a quick decision, even though

:28:44. > :28:51.he was thinking about it. He did not make his mind until he had been

:28:51. > :28:57.out here and seen the set up. is going to be my kit room. Are you

:28:57. > :29:03.one of those who has it your kit nice? No, untidy. He has his stuff

:29:03. > :29:07.everywhere, just keep it in here so I cannot see it. A lot of people

:29:07. > :29:11.around you said how settled, how comfortable and you life is in a

:29:11. > :29:16.nice balanced place which helps your training? Definitely,

:29:16. > :29:20.everything is settled nicely. If I look back five years ago, I was a

:29:20. > :29:25.different Mo Farah. Now I am married, I have got a daughter and

:29:25. > :29:30.a lovely wife. I am settled in with a nice house will stop everything

:29:30. > :29:33.has come together. As an athlete you have to be happy to do anything,

:29:33. > :29:39.mentally and physically. You have to have a nice home and be

:29:39. > :29:44.comfortable and then you can focus on training. When the you actually

:29:44. > :29:50.move in? Tomorrow. Where are you going to sleep? Everything is

:29:50. > :29:55.coming tomorrow. I will make a prediction. You have the big day

:29:55. > :30:05.tomorrow, your furniture is coming, moving everything in. At which

:30:05. > :30:07.

:30:07. > :30:12.point, he will go, "I am going for a run.". He has already told me he

:30:12. > :30:15.is going for a long run. Does he come home and moan about what he

:30:15. > :30:19.has to do? One day he came in crawling through the front door

:30:19. > :30:22.because he could not walk any more. Other than that he does not

:30:22. > :30:32.complain. Physically you can tell when he has had a hard session but

:30:32. > :30:36.

:30:36. > :30:40.How are you when you are watching? He said I should follow the times

:30:40. > :30:46.and make sure I know if he is on course. I said I would never

:30:46. > :30:51.understand that. Just when the bell goes, I know he has around about 60

:30:51. > :30:57.seconds. I said I will know by the last lap. He said you should be

:30:57. > :31:01.keeping track of the whole race, even splits, each kilometre. I said

:31:01. > :31:10.I can't do that, I will be too busy working out the times rather than

:31:10. > :31:15.just watching the race. Alberto Salazar is an American running

:31:15. > :31:19.legend. Throughout his career, both as an athlete and coach, he has a

:31:19. > :31:23.reputation for his attention to detail and these days he is

:31:23. > :31:27.recognised as the man who knows how to beat the Kenyans and Ethiopians,

:31:27. > :31:37.which is good news for Mo Farah because their relationship has

:31:37. > :31:38.

:31:38. > :31:44.already clipped, to the extent that his coach predicted the time to the

:31:44. > :31:49.second he was going to run. I said 27.46 when I was asked a week

:31:49. > :31:55.before, and I hit it on the button. It was mainly a guess, I had not

:31:55. > :31:58.coached him enough yet. Obviously with what he did two days ago,

:31:58. > :32:04.everyone knows he is capable of beating everyone in the world.

:32:04. > :32:08.There is no hiding it, he is that good. He is incredibly strong with

:32:08. > :32:14.incredible finishing speed. The stuffy is doing now is starting to

:32:14. > :32:21.pay off but there is so much potential for him to get better and

:32:21. > :32:25.stronger. His form looked the best I have seen. These walls are

:32:25. > :32:33.adorned with the faces of those who have won Olympic medals in the past.

:32:33. > :32:38.There is a task which is becoming increasingly difficult for European

:32:38. > :32:47.men. In the last Olympic Games, European men have only one two

:32:47. > :32:53.medals. The question is, can Mo Farah reverse the trend? I think he

:32:53. > :32:57.is very capable of medalling at 10,000m and 5000m. Which race he

:32:57. > :33:01.picks, we will have to wait and make a judgment on how his races go

:33:01. > :33:08.this summer. Also how the opposition is doing, and come up

:33:08. > :33:12.with a good plan for his best chance to win a medal. All along I

:33:12. > :33:21.wanted to do the 5000m and that is because I have competed in the

:33:21. > :33:26.European Championship in of 5000m. I always wanted to improve in that,

:33:26. > :33:30.I never thought about the 10, although now getting that time it

:33:30. > :33:36.makes you start thinking about it. Apparently you have now got to go

:33:36. > :33:43.and get in this freezing cold bath thing, and if you don't mind I will

:33:43. > :33:50.just watch. It is minus 170 degrees! What on earth does that

:33:50. > :33:54.feel like? Freezing! I am sometimes pleased I ran when I did and I

:33:54. > :33:59.didn't have to do this sort of thing. Do you know what my science

:33:59. > :34:04.was? My coach make me go down to the sea where I live and we would

:34:04. > :34:14.just run in the cold North Sea. That was about as scientific as it

:34:14. > :34:27.

:34:27. > :34:33.got. Are you OK in there? What does it feel like when you

:34:33. > :34:36.come out? Not stiff or anything? your body is really cold but you

:34:36. > :34:40.recover straight away. The following day, that is when you

:34:40. > :34:49.feel a lot better. I must put one of those on my Christmas shopping

:34:49. > :34:53.list. You should try and get in that vein. No, it is OK! So why

:34:54. > :35:03.didn't you go in? You probably need it more. I am too tall, as you can

:35:04. > :35:07.

:35:07. > :35:11.see. And he said -171 - was he having a laugh? You can't step into

:35:11. > :35:16.that but it is generated at that kind of temperature. It is a quick

:35:16. > :35:20.freeze, much better than a nice bath which you have to sit in for

:35:20. > :35:25.10 minutes. The ice bath is not a pleasant experience and it takes a

:35:25. > :35:29.long time to get moving again after a nice bath. If you go in there

:35:29. > :35:36.after you have done a heavy workout, you can pretty much walkout

:35:36. > :35:44.normally afterwards. He loves it, obviously. He seemed happy. Did you

:35:44. > :35:50.think to yourself the science has changed so much? Even since my

:35:50. > :35:55.career. I mentioned his coach, it is what he is renowned for. When

:35:55. > :36:01.they go to altitude training, he operates at three different heights.

:36:01. > :36:07.The sleet at about 8500 ft, does steady runs at about 7000 ft, does

:36:07. > :36:12.track workout at about 4700 feet. It is that attention to detail. We

:36:12. > :36:17.were talking about his foot strike which was thoroughly interesting. I

:36:17. > :36:21.was looking back with a little bitter jealousy to my day. He has

:36:21. > :36:27.not been with his new coach for very long, can that have made such

:36:27. > :36:34.a distance in such a short space of time? No, Mo Farah in my view could

:36:34. > :36:39.have run close to 27 minutes last year. You saw how he ran in

:36:39. > :36:43.Barcelona in the 10,000m. He ran a good 10,000m earlier in the season

:36:43. > :36:49.with Chris Tomlinson but he was capable of something in that region.

:36:49. > :36:53.What Alberto has done has injected in him a level of confidence that

:36:53. > :36:58.maybe wasn't there before. I think the Barcelona race has helped him

:36:58. > :37:02.as well, but if you could have seen that raised him and a brilliant and

:37:02. > :37:12.1000 metre race, a textbook race, and he now has the weaponry to deal

:37:12. > :37:15.with some of the best Kenyans and Ethiopians around. You can't run

:37:15. > :37:24.26.46 and not be a superb athlete, but he won that race and he can

:37:24. > :37:32.kick at the end. Off a fast race, he is in a great position. How good

:37:32. > :37:36.is that 26.4-6 - put it into context. It is difficult. Is it

:37:37. > :37:44.14th in the world and all that sort of thing, but I do think men's

:37:44. > :37:51.10,000m running needs to be taken into that era. If you are running -

:37:51. > :37:59.I was speaking about it earlier, anyone who has run reasonably close

:37:59. > :38:04.to 13 minutes should be thinking about running 26 that the 10,000m

:38:04. > :38:08.but the really encouraging thing is that we have spoken about him going

:38:08. > :38:18.from six in the world to challenging for the medal. He can

:38:18. > :38:20.

:38:20. > :38:24.do that now. If you take a his main opponent out of the equation, there

:38:24. > :38:28.was probably no one else who he should be scared of. The guy who

:38:28. > :38:33.heat out kicked there so far has been Supreme, world cross country

:38:33. > :38:38.champion, has won on the track, a good kicker, considered to be one

:38:38. > :38:42.of the best kickers, and Mo Farah destroyed him. That is the

:38:42. > :38:47.benchmark. There were other good athletes but the people immediately

:38:47. > :38:51.behind him were those who we would have said before that race that

:38:51. > :38:56.this guy is the one you need to beat. Let's not get too carried

:38:56. > :39:00.away, but if you are going to world championships and you want to win a

:39:00. > :39:10.medal, you got to be considered in the top three and you have got to

:39:10. > :39:10.

:39:10. > :39:15.think of yourself as a winner. He can do that. He also seems more

:39:15. > :39:24.confident and he loves the set-up out there. Your set-up and

:39:24. > :39:29.environment is important. He has a great coach, he likes to he works

:39:29. > :39:39.with, and don't underestimate his wife. He said he is a different Mo

:39:39. > :39:39.

:39:39. > :39:44.Farah, he is settled and calm. His wife is not a big track fan, if you

:39:44. > :39:48.know what I mean. He can go off and do his thing, come home, he will

:39:48. > :39:52.not be discussing everything he has been doing all day long because it

:39:52. > :40:00.can be quite in intensive environment. I think he has a

:40:00. > :40:03.brilliant set up, he just has to stay fit and healthy. In an

:40:03. > :40:08.athlete's life anything can happen before the Olympics but he isn't a

:40:08. > :40:12.great place. Quickly, how excited are you? We do not tell in that

:40:12. > :40:19.race? You are excited but there is a real tingle about it, isn't
