:00:54. > :00:58.Welcome to highlights of the 14th Great Manchester Run, once again
:00:59. > :01:01.that streets will be graced by some of the world didn't best runners on
:01:02. > :01:03.the most enthusiastic amateurs. Foremost they are not running to
:01:04. > :01:19.win, they are running for a reason. I always feel that anything is
:01:20. > :01:21.possible when I go out for a run and when I do my racing it is the little
:01:22. > :01:33.achievement that counts for me. I just went to the gym one day and
:01:34. > :01:39.realised I am enjoying this, slowly I started to see progress, my heart
:01:40. > :01:42.rate dropping off, my jeans size getting law on my T-shirt size
:01:43. > :01:49.dropping off and I was 8.5 stones lighter. Running has helped me
:01:50. > :01:54.mentally through some tough times, the world has been on my shoulders,
:01:55. > :01:59.over the last few years I have gone through depression and stress and
:02:00. > :02:05.anxiety, if I didn't have running, I don't think I would be here today.
:02:06. > :02:10.The best advice I can give, really, if you are out there running,
:02:11. > :02:14.however slow or fast it is, you are running faster than the person sat
:02:15. > :02:22.on the couch, put your shoes on, get out there and run.
:02:23. > :02:29.Now we will tell you what is coming up, so much to look forward to.
:02:30. > :02:33.There is no doubt that Manchester is one of the hot heads of sport in the
:02:34. > :02:40.UK and this weekend certainly encapsulates that. From the games on
:02:41. > :02:44.Friday night through to the next generation taking part in the mini
:02:45. > :02:48.run at the Etihad Stadium. Anthony Crolla will be running again this
:02:49. > :02:52.year and he has recruited an army to do it with him, couldn't as for
:02:53. > :02:55.anyone better to motivate them. So money on taking to the streets this
:02:56. > :03:00.morning and into this afternoon and so money emotional and inspirational
:03:01. > :03:07.stories to tell about why they have chosen to take on a challenge of
:03:08. > :03:10.running 10,000 metres. And six Olympic gold medals between them, it
:03:11. > :03:17.only begins to tell the story of the brilliant Ethiopian jewel of Dibaba
:03:18. > :03:23.and Bekele. They head up the elite field. It is also a day tinged with
:03:24. > :03:26.sadness because a great friend and supporter of the Great Manchester
:03:27. > :03:31.Run is no longer with us, I'm sure you all remember Kirsty at the
:03:32. > :03:36.Commonwealth Games in 2002 when she and David Beckham presented the
:03:37. > :03:39.Jubilee batted to the Queen, Kirsty with the 20 kilograms oxygen tank
:03:40. > :03:44.she needed because of the incredibly rare illness and has been part of
:03:45. > :03:47.the run since the beginning in 2003, the Finder medical odds to live as
:03:48. > :03:49.long as she did on raising many millions of pounds in the process.
:03:50. > :03:55.long as she did on raising many Alongside me as one of her sisters
:03:56. > :04:00.and Phil Taylor, part of the charity. Incredibly sad that Kirsty
:04:01. > :04:02.is not here, she has been a big part of the Great Manchester Run, just
:04:03. > :04:07.tell me how proud you are of the Great Manchester Run, just
:04:08. > :04:09.sister and what she achieved? Words cannot put in how proud
:04:10. > :04:11.sister and what she achieved? Words done this run twice before and
:04:12. > :04:14.sister and what she achieved? Words year I say I will never do it again
:04:15. > :04:17.and this year is the third time round. Now she cannot do it herself,
:04:18. > :04:23.I feel like I have to step up because she did so much, I need to
:04:24. > :04:27.take her place and do it for her. She was so selfless with all the
:04:28. > :04:32.challenges she had in her life to focus all much on doing good for
:04:33. > :04:35.others was inspirational. Definitely and you never once mourned, when she
:04:36. > :04:41.didn't feel too great she just got on with it and took thing she had so
:04:42. > :04:46.much going on and she never mourned and I want to race for her. Wood
:04:47. > :04:51.tell us about the charity and the money that Kirsty raised? The
:04:52. > :04:56.charity first started with the Kirsty appeal which raised ?5
:04:57. > :05:02.million to secure the hospice. We reached the ?5 million in
:05:03. > :05:06.million to secure the hospice. We 2006 and we launched another
:05:07. > :05:13.campaign to raise ?3.5 million to build France's Lodge, which is the
:05:14. > :05:22.juvenile section. We have built that and the Kirsty club is raising funds
:05:23. > :05:27.to help France's's has because it costs ?4 million per year to run it
:05:28. > :05:33.annually. We saw David Beckham and this is a message that David sent.
:05:34. > :05:39.It is amazing what she achieved and I guess when she was born and just
:05:40. > :05:42.growing up and all the challenges she had, but she thought she wasn't
:05:43. > :05:47.going to survive beyond four. She has achieved a lot in the short time
:05:48. > :05:51.she is here, than what has achieved a lot in the short time
:05:52. > :05:55.lifetime of 100 years could have achieved, received numerous awards,
:05:56. > :05:57.raised millions of pounds for charity and all for the benefit of
:05:58. > :06:00.others as well as our self and charity and all for the benefit of
:06:01. > :06:05.families benefit from the hard work she has done throughout her life. It
:06:06. > :06:08.will be an emotional day for you, all the best. You will keep the
:06:09. > :06:13.memory of Kirsty burning brightly and thanks for speaking to us. We
:06:14. > :06:18.have got two roving reporters to bring you all the stories, former
:06:19. > :06:23.British sprinter Jeanette, but Phil Jones is on the VIP bus. I am here
:06:24. > :06:29.with one of our great 400-metre runners. Ieuan Thomas, TV presenter.
:06:30. > :06:36.We have seen you on the marathon, the half marathon. It is not too
:06:37. > :06:41.bad, ten K mentally, six and a bit miles as OK, still a long way,
:06:42. > :06:45.people think you can run it. Venus printer, anything over half a mile
:06:46. > :06:49.starts to hurt but if I am sensible and go off at a steady pace, 10,000
:06:50. > :06:53.metres should be OK. You are running with a difference, you have got your
:06:54. > :06:57.phone, selfie stick, what are you doing? Today is a strange one, I
:06:58. > :07:04.will attempt a live broadcast for the whole event on this stick and
:07:05. > :07:08.people can tune in on Periscope and watch me live, watch me go through
:07:09. > :07:11.pain and smiles and hopefully not get slapped on the bottom by loads
:07:12. > :07:17.of people when they overtake me, that's what happens to me, they give
:07:18. > :07:21.me a little friendly pat. People can message you, they are already
:07:22. > :07:26.messaging me what they can write it on the screen and it comes to Jimmy
:07:27. > :07:29.and I just want to grab the essence of Manchester and show people what a
:07:30. > :07:32.great event that is, the crowds are fantastic, at the moment the sun is
:07:33. > :07:36.out which is rare for Manchester. I just want to show people what it is
:07:37. > :07:42.like, a Birds Eye view of doing a great run series, the 10,000 metre
:07:43. > :07:49.race. We will check in with the footage later in the coverage. I am
:07:50. > :07:52.here with Joe Edwards who is taking part in today's Great Manchester
:07:53. > :08:01.Run. These tell us why today isn't so important for you? My husband
:08:02. > :08:05.Chris Edwards was treated at the Christie, was diagnosed with stomach
:08:06. > :08:10.cancer in 2008 and the treatment and care he had from the hospital was
:08:11. > :08:14.fantastic. I actually got pregnant during the time that Chris was ill
:08:15. > :08:20.and had a little boy and I have no doubt that without that he wouldn't
:08:21. > :08:26.be with me here today. Chris lost his battle with stomach cancer in
:08:27. > :08:33.2010 and then I decided to do some fundraising, started off with a wok
:08:34. > :08:38.from our home to Anfield and it snowballed from there. I love the
:08:39. > :08:43.charity and everything about it and I do what I can for them. Thank you
:08:44. > :08:47.so much, good luck today. As always, the organisers here gather some of
:08:48. > :08:54.the world did invest in the elite field and it is no exception.
:08:55. > :09:07.Everyone in the women's feel, triple Olympic champion and twice a winner,
:09:08. > :09:13.Dibaba. Edna Kiplagat was third a year ago. European cross-country
:09:14. > :09:18.champion in 2014, excellent second place last year, the best of
:09:19. > :09:20.British, Gemma Steel. In the men's field, three-time Olympic
:09:21. > :09:27.gold-medallist and champion two years ago, Kenenisa Bekele. One of
:09:28. > :09:33.the world marathon greats was runner-up that they, he is back to
:09:34. > :09:41.renew rivalries, Kenya's Ludik medallist, Wilson Kipsang. --
:09:42. > :09:44.Olympic medallist. To an elite sportsmen, WBA lightweight champion,
:09:45. > :09:48.Anthony Crolla, ran last year and back this time of a whole bunch of
:09:49. > :09:49.guys, you have been mentoring them and calling them Anthony Crolla's
:09:50. > :09:59.army. A great achievement, winning the
:10:00. > :10:06.world title, when you set out to do something from an early age and you
:10:07. > :10:14.have done it after many years. To come back and to achieve that is
:10:15. > :10:21.definitely my greatest achievement. I think the training at times can be
:10:22. > :10:26.very tough. Once you take those boxes in training, in the fight, you
:10:27. > :10:31.know you can overcome a lot of things and likewise in fights, you
:10:32. > :10:37.know how tough it can get, so you know how hard you have to push
:10:38. > :10:41.yourself and training. Running is important, different types of
:10:42. > :10:44.running. But whether it be long distance or bits on the track, it
:10:45. > :10:52.simulates in a fight when you are working hard or building stamina.
:10:53. > :11:00.For them to ask in the army that has been put together, it means an awful
:11:01. > :11:06.lot. Just listening to some of their stories, they are an inspiration to
:11:07. > :11:11.me. I love the city and not many prouder man Clooney and is then me.
:11:12. > :11:16.The way the people get behind their own, you will see that on the day of
:11:17. > :11:21.the race. The city comes out each year to support the race. Talk about
:11:22. > :11:27.these guys and what you have been doing. We have got 12 runners, each
:11:28. > :11:33.representing a boxing round or a boxing fight. And everyone of them,
:11:34. > :11:36.they are raising money for a great cause and we are all at different
:11:37. > :11:39.levels but great getting to know these people and I'm very proud to
:11:40. > :11:44.be doing it with them today. Did you pick great looking crew? It was very
:11:45. > :11:49.tough because we had a lot of entries but I think I have the
:11:50. > :11:53.perfect 12 year. It is not just young athletes, it is people of all
:11:54. > :11:57.ages and all levels and each one of them doing it for different causes
:11:58. > :12:00.and it is something I am very proud to be apart of. You have enjoyed a
:12:01. > :12:07.row, has he been a good motivator? Yes. They had to say that. Have you
:12:08. > :12:11.enjoyed it? To be asked to do it at the Great Manchester Run, this is
:12:12. > :12:14.the best day of the year for Manchester, the way the city comes
:12:15. > :12:18.out and support this run and a lot of great causes, I have really
:12:19. > :12:22.enjoyed it. This time last year, we were talking about your rehab on the
:12:23. > :12:26.horrible incident you had when you try to catch those burglars and you
:12:27. > :12:31.got a head injury, what a year it has been since then, WBA lightweight
:12:32. > :12:37.champion. Here is a reminder of your last factory, you retain your title
:12:38. > :12:45.against Barroso. COMMENTATOR: What a shot that is from Anthony Crolla,
:12:46. > :12:51.the crowd loved what they are seeing. He has sent his men to the
:12:52. > :12:54.floor and account has started! He looks to his corner and he has
:12:55. > :13:02.successfully defended his WBA lightweight title from the man...
:13:03. > :13:07.Sensational stuff from the man from Manchester. It couldn't have gone
:13:08. > :13:14.any better. Last time out winning the title was special, being an
:13:15. > :13:16.underdog again and the challenger, even sweeter
:13:17. > :13:19.underdog again and the challenger, enjoying life but I have
:13:20. > :13:20.underdog again and the challenger, working hard and keep improving.
:13:21. > :13:25.Next fight? I will look working hard and keep improving.
:13:26. > :13:29.sure yet, I should know in the next sure yet, I should know in the next
:13:30. > :13:32.few weeks but hopefully one of the other champions and many more great
:13:33. > :13:41.night in Manchester. Maybe Les Vega 's one-day! Good luck, I will speak
:13:42. > :13:43.to you later. Good afternoon to the commentary team.
:13:44. > :13:48.to you later. Good afternoon to the Paula Radcliffe and Steve Cram. Good
:13:49. > :13:51.morning Jonathan and everybody else. Beautiful day in Manchester, looking
:13:52. > :13:59.forward to some great racing. Chatting with Paula about Tirunesh
:14:00. > :14:08.Dibaba. Took over a year out of racing. I'm sure she will get
:14:09. > :14:13.cheered around the streets, the last time she actually raised was here in
:14:14. > :14:21.Manchester back in 2014. Lovely conditions, we hope for a good race
:14:22. > :14:25.and I guess the question is how fit is Tirunesh Dibaba. Good morning to
:14:26. > :14:35.Paula Radcliffe. Like everybody, you must be delighted to see her bag?
:14:36. > :14:46.It's great to see her back and I'm anticipating seeing the form she is
:14:47. > :14:50.in. She admitted she gained quite a bit of weight and wasn't really
:14:51. > :14:54.running through the final stages of pregnancy, took some time to get
:14:55. > :14:58.back into it. This is her first real test and then she will decide if our
:14:59. > :15:02.main aim is to qualify for Rio, she's got to find the 10,000 metres
:15:03. > :15:05.on the track but this will answer some questions. This will get the
:15:06. > :15:12.competitive juices flowing again. some questions. This will get the
:15:13. > :15:15.They can ease her back into competition. It's not an easy field
:15:16. > :15:19.but it's not like having to run the qualifying time first time out. As
:15:20. > :15:23.they leave the city centre, where the tens of thousands are waiting
:15:24. > :15:29.for their opportunity to get going, they pretty much runway behind where
:15:30. > :15:35.we are in Deansgate and then head out towards the Salford area in this
:15:36. > :15:41.part of the route. Pretty fast, a flat course. Old Trafford always
:15:42. > :15:47.looming in the distance. FA Cup winners last night, it will be a
:15:48. > :15:53.happy place and maybe you saw heads around here today. A little loop
:15:54. > :15:57.around, not far away from the BBC HQ as well, Salford quays, and then
:15:58. > :16:00.back along the same route. At this point a couple of kilometres to go,
:16:01. > :16:04.this is where the race normally breaks up and then up to Dean 's
:16:05. > :16:14.gate, where we are sitting and patiently waiting for them to
:16:15. > :16:17.finish. -- Deansgate. Well, you can see that Tirunesh Dibaba is just
:16:18. > :16:25.trying to force the issue a little bit here. Edna Kiplagat looking
:16:26. > :16:31.reasonably comfortable and the others hanging on. That little group
:16:32. > :16:37.further back includes Gemma Steel but Dibaba is breaking things up and
:16:38. > :16:46.as Paula said, perfect pace if you like, 3.11, 3.11. Identical times
:16:47. > :16:50.for the first two kilometres but now she means business. She does and
:16:51. > :17:01.already starting to forge ahead. She will be enjoying getting back out
:17:02. > :17:06.here. Just being able to appreciate being back racing will give her
:17:07. > :17:09.energy as well. Starting to test the others and ask some questions of
:17:10. > :17:16.them in terms of how fast they are able to go right now. Old Trafford,
:17:17. > :17:21.which is quiet today, it wasn't quiet down at Wembley yesterday.
:17:22. > :17:30.Great day for the club, commiserations to all the Palace
:17:31. > :17:41.fans. The streets around Old Trafford quiet today. Gemma Steel
:17:42. > :17:52.just struggling a bit there, and the Polish athlete 110, and the Italian
:17:53. > :18:00.wearing 108. It's been a difficult period for Gemma Steel. She knew how
:18:01. > :18:10.well some of the other girls were going. They get the leaders, Dibaba
:18:11. > :18:13.is really using, I wouldn't say it is twisting and turning here but a
:18:14. > :18:16.slight downhill section away from the football ground, able to keep
:18:17. > :18:23.stretching out and a little bit behind as they cross the bridge
:18:24. > :18:31.here. The third kilometre they went through in 3.06, which is what did
:18:32. > :18:35.the damage. She has just eased back a bit into her original rhythm and
:18:36. > :18:39.the other two able to hang onto that. Of the three of them, Tirunesh
:18:40. > :18:43.Dibaba really looking in control of this and the one who looks the most
:18:44. > :18:47.comfortable right now. Well, it was the FA Cup final yesterday, a big
:18:48. > :18:49.comfortable right now. Well, it was day for football and a big year for
:18:50. > :18:53.football with the European Championships coming up, all hoping
:18:54. > :18:56.that England will do well and the man who is tasked to make sure that
:18:57. > :19:00.happens is going to be our start today, ease with Phil Jones.
:19:01. > :19:05.Thanks a lot, Steve. Obviously you're talking about the man beside
:19:06. > :19:09.me, Roy Hodgson, the England manager. All about France coming up
:19:10. > :19:16.but today it is all about the big game later on in Manchester but what
:19:17. > :19:21.about this first of all? First of all I'm very happy and honoured to
:19:22. > :19:25.be asked. Since the start of the race it's great to see so many
:19:26. > :19:29.people taking part and I can only hope they will have good weather for
:19:30. > :19:34.the remainder because I'm sure that will help them. You always get a
:19:35. > :19:38.warm welcome here and I'm sure you will get that later on with the
:19:39. > :19:43.England team as the build-up starts in earnest for the Euros. We've had
:19:44. > :19:47.a good few days training at St George's Park that we're looking
:19:48. > :19:51.forward to the game this afternoon, an important one and the first in
:19:52. > :19:55.our three preparation games here. I'm sure that the players and the
:19:56. > :20:00.staff are all very excited about playing at the City of Manchester
:20:01. > :20:04.Stadium. How do you get the sense of the excitement that is building up?
:20:05. > :20:07.The nation goes football crazy when these big championships come around
:20:08. > :20:12.and I'm sure you're being approached all the time about that? Yes I am,
:20:13. > :20:16.but I enjoy that and I think that's very healthy. I'm delighted that the
:20:17. > :20:20.country is excited and I also feel we have a lot of support throughout
:20:21. > :20:24.the country, I think people like the team and liked what the team is
:20:25. > :20:28.trying to do, so we go there with high hopes but we also know that we
:20:29. > :20:33.carried hopes of a nation on our shoulders. Good luck for the Euros
:20:34. > :20:38.and enjoy the occasion today. I shall, thank you very much.
:20:39. > :20:44.Yes, good luck to Roy and the England team. And all the other home
:20:45. > :20:54.nation teams taking part as well. Now, Tirunesh Dibaba has really put
:20:55. > :20:57.other down here, Diane Nukuri is now struggling and a ten metre gap
:20:58. > :21:01.between herself and Edna Kiplagat, who herself is just hanging on to
:21:02. > :21:05.the Ethiopian, who I wouldn't necessarily say is looking like her
:21:06. > :21:09.old self but this will be a real confidence booster for Tirunesh
:21:10. > :21:14.Dibaba, if she can keep forging on here and keep the pace going. When
:21:15. > :21:19.you come back in the first six or seven K, it's when you get into that
:21:20. > :21:25.bit of the race, three K to go, that you realise how fit you are. You can
:21:26. > :21:29.tell you only have one or two to Lahmert is to go. She doesn't look
:21:30. > :21:35.like she's putting has under any undue pressure or any questions she
:21:36. > :21:40.can't answer commission looks very smooth and controlled, a bit of a
:21:41. > :21:44.look over her shoulder there. It is Diane Nukuri who has not been able
:21:45. > :21:48.to go with the front two. We're going to look back a little bit
:21:49. > :21:52.earlier, starting with the wheelchair race, and Andrew Cotter.
:21:53. > :22:00.COMMENTATOR: Jonathan Edwards was there to get them under way and the
:22:01. > :22:05.man out in front at the very start really did dominate things, Simon
:22:06. > :22:09.Lawson. He had a good race with David Weir last year but Weir not
:22:10. > :22:14.racing this year, so Lawson was out on his own for just about the whole
:22:15. > :22:19.race. What a pace he said. In the women's race it was a lot closer,
:22:20. > :22:24.with the offending champion Shelly Woods and Jade Jones. Full Simon
:22:25. > :22:30.Lawson, he was out on his own, it was a quick time and just outside
:22:31. > :22:33.the course record set by David Weir, but he won it for fourth time. A
:22:34. > :22:41.Now we can look forward to the start fourth title as well for
:22:42. > :22:44.Now we can look forward to the start of the men's elite race and the
:22:45. > :22:49.massed ranks of the thousands are going to follow them on this now
:22:50. > :22:59.Good luck, this is Europe's biggest smiles as ever.
:23:00. > :23:06.Good luck, this is Europe's biggest 10k. The Great Manchester Run about
:23:07. > :23:17.to get under way and there we go! The klaxon sounded by the England
:23:18. > :23:21.manager. Many people will cross this start line over the next couple of
:23:22. > :23:24.hours, we can't fit them all on the same route because it is only 10k
:23:25. > :23:29.will start its great to see how this race has grown over the years. Today
:23:30. > :23:36.we expect to see the 300,000th finisher to cross the line in about
:23:37. > :23:42.12.20 five, something like that. Let's go through some of the other
:23:43. > :23:51.names, the elite start list, Robertson, an eight Bierce. Richard
:23:52. > :23:57.Goodman, good to see him having a run out here. -- Arne Gabius.
:23:58. > :23:57.Goodman, good to see him having a keeps looking
:23:58. > :24:03.Goodman, good to see him having a sees is about a five metre gap. She
:24:04. > :24:08.just needs to concentrate on running towards the finish. Not too far to
:24:09. > :24:14.go and the crowds starting to build here. She is moving well since she
:24:15. > :24:19.has picked up her cadence a bit. She's just checking almost every few
:24:20. > :24:24.strides as to what is happening. All she needs to know is that the gap is
:24:25. > :24:27.growing and the race is in the bag now, so she can concentrate on
:24:28. > :24:34.finishing strongly in the last 300 metres or so. They've come around
:24:35. > :24:38.the final bend and it's a bit of an uphill finish here at the Great
:24:39. > :24:42.Manchester Run. It's great to see Tirunesh Dibaba coming back after so
:24:43. > :24:46.long away. The last race was here two years ago and this could be the
:24:47. > :24:52.long away. The last race was here comeback onto the track and then
:24:53. > :24:54.perhaps a return to the sort of form that all her win in London, win in
:24:55. > :24:57.Beijing, taking the Olympic gold that all her win in London, win in
:24:58. > :25:04.medals and it would be fantastic see her back in Rio. Tirunesh Dibaba
:25:05. > :25:06.now into the last 200 metres or so and the crowd getting ready to
:25:07. > :25:10.receive her. and the crowd getting ready to
:25:11. > :25:13.pretty good today and it will give her a bit of an indication. Not
:25:14. > :25:17.until she gets onto the track and really has a go will she find out
:25:18. > :25:20.what sort of shape she is in. But this has been a great return from a
:25:21. > :25:26.good comeback for the three times Olympic champion, Tirunesh Dibaba
:25:27. > :25:31.comes back to win the Great Manchester Run for the third time.
:25:32. > :25:35.We will get the time confirmed officially and if so that is a
:25:36. > :25:39.pretty good return for Dibaba. Kiplagat did pretty well to hang on
:25:40. > :25:42.for so long but as ever she was never going to really be able to
:25:43. > :25:48.content with Dibaba's speed in the final stages. And Nukuri, another
:25:49. > :25:52.good solid performance from her. Expect to see her running for
:25:53. > :25:59.Burundi at the Olympic Games. She will take third spot. And under 32
:26:00. > :26:08.minutes, so a good performance from her, Nukuri, but a fair way behind.
:26:09. > :26:12.Gemma Steel, watching the clock as she comes up the home straight. She
:26:13. > :26:17.will be the first of the British athletes to cross the line. It's
:26:18. > :26:21.going to be under 33 minutes, that's an improvement from what we've seen
:26:22. > :26:28.so far this year from Gemma Steel. 32.40 three. Well, the men have gone
:26:29. > :26:33.through the first kilometre in about 2.40 five. A steady enough pace for
:26:34. > :26:36.them. Kenenisa Bekele elite and Wilson Kipsang, I'm sure they've
:26:37. > :26:42.still got a bit of the London Marathon in their legs, it wasn't
:26:43. > :26:48.that long ago, and Gabius is there, as we expected. Kipsang Is the one
:26:49. > :26:55.who is just forcing the issue a little bit. Kenenisa Bekele by
:26:56. > :26:58.contrast, we weren't expecting too much and
:26:59. > :27:13.contrast, we weren't expecting too Kenenisa Bekele really ran
:27:14. > :27:17.brilliantly in the marathon. Now the questions are, because of that
:27:18. > :27:22.lesser build-up, is it going to have taken more out of his body and mean
:27:23. > :27:26.that he is not able to bounce back as quickly. Looking at the two of
:27:27. > :27:30.them coming he himself and Kipsang, I'm sure he will have recovered and
:27:31. > :27:35.come back a bit stronger than Kipsang will happen able to. I've
:27:36. > :27:42.found Batman and Robin! Isn't this fantastic. Your names are not Batman
:27:43. > :27:49.and Robin? Being Batman, I can't hear a thing! This is Mike! You're
:27:50. > :27:55.from Salford. Can you tell me a bit about why you're here today? We're
:27:56. > :28:01.raising money for Cancer Research. We've been doing some of the smaller
:28:02. > :28:06.runs around Manchester as Batman and Robin and this is the big event
:28:07. > :28:14.today. Now, Robin, do you take your instruction from Batman? Will he be
:28:15. > :28:22.pacing you today? Robin is not allowed to beat Batman! Yeah, I not
:28:23. > :28:26.allowed to beat him! Not at all? It is Batman and Robin, not Robin and
:28:27. > :28:31.Batman, there is a pecking order! All right, I'm hoping you put in a
:28:32. > :28:34.good sprint finish so you can beat Batman. Well, he can't breathe
:28:35. > :28:41.through his nose so it shouldn't be too bad! Approaching halfway in the
:28:42. > :28:47.men's race, they've just got through halfway in 14.17. It did pick up in
:28:48. > :28:54.that fifth kilometre, because they had been going at a fairly slow
:28:55. > :29:00.pace. At the moment heading for something like 28 and a half
:29:01. > :29:04.minutes, which in itself isn't that fast but it has just broken the
:29:05. > :29:08.field up a bit and Kipsang has taken on the challenge.
:29:09. > :29:18.And mirror image of the women's race when they have started to run
:29:19. > :29:22.quicker. That has caused questions to be asked of McNeill who is now
:29:23. > :29:30.dropping back and the three runners recovering from the London Marathon,
:29:31. > :29:36.able to stay with him but he is now dropping a little bit around that
:29:37. > :29:48.corner and Kipsang is keeping the pace moving along. That was 2.48
:29:49. > :29:59.kilometre for the fifth kilometre. I should remind you, great story
:30:00. > :30:03.about the Robinson twins, when they went out to Kenya, I remember seeing
:30:04. > :30:08.the on a couple of occasions and I thought we are going to go and live
:30:09. > :30:11.and train like the canyons and see what happens and it really turned
:30:12. > :30:18.their hold careers around, they have turned into very good athletes but
:30:19. > :30:23.they talk a lot about that change of attitude in terms of living,
:30:24. > :30:28.breathing, running and understanding the likes of Wilson Kipsang, and
:30:29. > :30:33.when you are surrounded in that culture and that ethos it is amazing
:30:34. > :30:39.how much difference can be made. They have struggled to get their own
:30:40. > :30:43.federation to realise their abilities and help them so they went
:30:44. > :30:49.and help themselves. They have had a great three years, four years,
:30:50. > :30:57.really. Struggling to hang on to this, the seventh kilometre was 2.4
:30:58. > :31:01.four. Kipsang pushing on. I am with the Manchester United runners, an
:31:02. > :31:10.array of runners here who put together a fantastic campaign to get
:31:11. > :31:15.loads of the people from the union. He is one of our professors, another
:31:16. > :31:19.colleague, Mike, decided to do something to Lincoln with really
:31:20. > :31:22.event that takes place to catch the imagination and get the University
:31:23. > :31:26.together we set the target of a thousand people between staff and
:31:27. > :31:33.students and we weren't sure we were going to get it but we have got
:31:34. > :31:37.1100. Absolutely amazing. Almost on cue, Bekele thinking enough is
:31:38. > :31:44.enough and away I go. Into the last kilometre. Looks behind every few
:31:45. > :31:51.strides and all of a sudden the gap is there. That was much easier than
:31:52. > :31:56.Dibaba who had to work to shake off Kiplagat in the closing stages,
:31:57. > :32:01.still checking over her shoulder, Kenenisa Bekele, as soon as he put
:32:02. > :32:05.his foot down, he easily moved away on a still checking behind him but
:32:06. > :32:08.he can relax and enjoy this run because I don't think Wilson Kipsang
:32:09. > :32:16.is going to be able to get anywhere close to challenging him. Bekele
:32:17. > :32:20.building his lead, Kipsang in second place, Richard Goodman is running
:32:21. > :32:30.very well for the British athletes, incest. There is Richard Goodman,
:32:31. > :32:37.Shaftesbury Harrier. Running very strongly indeed. Hoping for a good
:32:38. > :32:43.performance but at the front, Bekele with every single stride, stretching
:32:44. > :32:49.his lead away from Wilson Kipsang, who is looking ragged and tired. And
:32:50. > :32:54.like Dibaba, when he is at his best, there is no better side than
:32:55. > :33:00.Kenenisa Bekele, another look behind, looking strong, moving well.
:33:01. > :33:04.Obviously managed to shake off the London Marathon, great performance,
:33:05. > :33:06.it is out of his legs and has enjoyed his performance in
:33:07. > :33:13.Manchester and great to see him back. Kenenisa Bekele will of course
:33:14. > :33:19.hope that all he can do is show that he is in shape and show that he is
:33:20. > :33:20.ready and if somebody who is as great as he is at his capabilities
:33:21. > :33:24.on the track he great as he is at his capabilities
:33:25. > :33:29.selectors at some point put trust in him and you were saying at the
:33:30. > :33:34.beginning, Paula was mentioning how Ethiopian go away on camp, they look
:33:35. > :33:40.at how people are performing and surprise with selections and they
:33:41. > :33:48.can change their mind. All this will do is just serve a reminder that
:33:49. > :33:52.Kenenisa Bekele is on the road, over 10,000 metres, he can take on the
:33:53. > :33:56.best and almost putting his arms out to see, what do you think? Back to
:33:57. > :34:01.winning ways, the great champion that is the niece of Italy comes to
:34:02. > :34:10.take the title, the Great Manchester Run is his again, great to see him
:34:11. > :34:15.back, Kenenisa Bekele with a really solid run, solid performance. Too
:34:16. > :34:22.good for everybody today, including Wilson Kipsang.
:34:23. > :34:29.McNeill has asked Robertson, he looks behind, Robertson struggling
:34:30. > :34:32.in the latter stages, as expected, the Australian coming through, good
:34:33. > :34:39.performance from him, might be his best ever on the roads. McNeill gets
:34:40. > :34:41.third spot, Robertson coming in behind for fourth spot, looking a
:34:42. > :34:44.bit tired and ragged, in the middle behind for fourth spot, looking a
:34:45. > :34:49.of the race he forced things a little bit and we may be suggested
:34:50. > :34:54.his races coming into this didn't look great and evidence of that. He
:34:55. > :34:55.was under 29 minutes, I know he was hoping for something a lot quicker
:34:56. > :35:03.than that. This will be full of people in the
:35:04. > :35:09.not too distant future and about other milestone or the Great
:35:10. > :35:16.Manchester Run, 300,000 finishers will cross the line. They will not
:35:17. > :35:19.just be a 10,000 metre run but half marathon as well next year and this
:35:20. > :35:44.is what the course is going to be like.
:35:45. > :36:15.not just a 10,000 metres next year but the half marathon as well. Get

:36:22. > :36:42.Richard Goodman the first of the British athletes just under 30
:36:43. > :36:51.minutes. COO great to see Dibaba back in the very encouraging
:36:52. > :36:52.performance. Fu Asil further down, Gemma Steel, best of the British
:36:53. > :37:09.athletes. Fourth victory for Simon Lawson.
:37:10. > :37:20.Shelly Woods coming through to defend her title, fourth title for
:37:21. > :37:25.her. Nikki Emerson in third. Kenenisa Bekele, great run today,
:37:26. > :37:31.you looked very happy when you crossed the line. Yes, because three
:37:32. > :37:39.weeks after the London Marathon I wanted to come here, so happy to
:37:40. > :37:44.come back after two years, very happy to be here with a big crowd
:37:45. > :37:56.here. They are great people. I am happy to be here. In terms of
:37:57. > :37:57.selection for Rio, you must be disappointed, was this a message to
:37:58. > :38:05.the selectors? I have already showed them before. I
:38:06. > :38:15.don't know why, of course I am not happy about it. They have to select
:38:16. > :38:20.maybe a third person. Fingers crossed we will see you in Rio. You
:38:21. > :38:22.are going to beat through the interpreter. How happy were you with
:38:23. > :38:40.your comeback race? I am so happy that I have this race
:38:41. > :38:45.and I try to test myself with the Manchester run and it has proved to
:38:46. > :38:53.be very good for me. Will we see you in Rio? I am going to try the 10000
:38:54. > :38:57.and hopefully I will make the team. You are both brilliant, thanks very
:38:58. > :39:01.much. We hope to see you both in Rio.

:39:18. > :39:22.husband, I am running the Great Manchester Run in his memory. He was
:39:23. > :39:26.a world champion boxer, passionate about sport and exercise and it

:46:53. > :46:58.dad, they're running. Is she going to pace you? She's a bit speedy? I'm
:46:59. > :47:03.not really sure! This must be a proud moment for you. She always
:47:04. > :47:08.said when she was old enough she would run the Manchester 10k and
:47:09. > :47:12.here she is, not running but she's doing it no matter what. Guys, I
:47:13. > :47:15.wish you the best of luck. Hope to see you at the finish line. Look at
:47:16. > :47:19.all these bright colours, fantastic. Thanks a lot.
:47:20. > :47:25.Well, it's been a great weekend for sport in the north-west. Obviously
:47:26. > :47:28.Man United won the FA Cup at Wembley but up here we have had the Great
:47:29. > :47:31.CityGames and Greg Rutherford looking in great form in the long
:47:32. > :47:43.jump. Yesterday was the next generation in the mini-run.
:47:44. > :47:57.It's great, kids are getting moving, aren't they? They're not sad that
:47:58. > :48:02.I'm in front of the PlayStations, the laptops... They are out there
:48:03. > :48:08.having a great time in the rain in Manchester. It's great to get so
:48:09. > :48:13.many kids out there getting active. My favourite bit was when I got the
:48:14. > :48:19.medal! I'm so glad because it's my first-ever medal. It was the best
:48:20. > :48:30.day of my life! I had so much fun! She'd had a great
:48:31. > :48:39.time, she's been really good. She's only three, it's her first one.
:48:40. > :48:50.He's just finished the race and we're really, really proud of him.
:48:51. > :48:53.You beat daddy! I did, I did! It was great fun, you wanted to run the
:48:54. > :49:01.whole way, didn't you? You didn't stop, did you? We're doing the 10k
:49:02. > :49:04.tomorrow as well. I'm running in the Great Manchester Run and I'm really
:49:05. > :49:10.excited. I'm running for the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, to
:49:11. > :49:14.hopefully raise enough money... I'm hoping to do it within 50 minutes
:49:15. > :49:19.for them, but famous last words. We will see. I've had the best day
:49:20. > :49:27.ever! CHEERING
:49:28. > :49:44.I see you proudly wearing your blue Peter badge. -- your Blue Peter
:49:45. > :49:51.badge. We had so many, go an Blue Peter! Loads of kids out here
:49:52. > :49:55.cheering for Blue Peter and wanting that sport badge also I suppose it's
:49:56. > :49:59.really aborted to get the message out and get the kids active.
:50:00. > :50:05.Definitely the important thing is not about how fast you go, getting
:50:06. > :50:09.to the start line is the hardest thing to do sometimes because it's
:50:10. > :50:13.scary and intimidating, but it's not about anything other than that, get
:50:14. > :50:14.to the start line and do your best. You're an inspiration, well done. So
:50:15. > :50:30.tired! My name is Amanda Scott and this is
:50:31. > :50:33.my run. I started my running journey in 2009 after my diagnosis of
:50:34. > :50:41.Crohn's disease which resulted in surgery. I ended up in coronary care
:50:42. > :50:45.and six months after coming out of coronary care I decided I was going
:50:46. > :50:54.to run the London Marathon. Running benefits might Crohn's disease -- my
:50:55. > :51:01.Crohn's disease because it eight the flow through the digestive system.
:51:02. > :51:07.It also helps with my fatigue and reduces my pain. I've also managed
:51:08. > :51:14.to reduce my dependence on morphine and tramadol, and reduced my chronic
:51:15. > :51:17.fatigue. Mentally I find it helps me to maintain a positive outlook on
:51:18. > :51:21.life, helping with the psychological side of this disease because it can
:51:22. > :51:25.be quite liberating. I always feel that anything is possible when I go
:51:26. > :51:32.out for a run, and when I do the races it's the little achievements
:51:33. > :51:41.that count for me. When I'm running, I tend to think of my mum, Leone
:51:42. > :51:46.Scott. She was my best friend and my biggest inspiration in life. She
:51:47. > :51:51.worked while I was having chemotherapy. She did everything,
:51:52. > :51:55.she held my hand and fought with me and was there in every single
:51:56. > :51:59.surgery I've ever had. Not having my mum here has been the hardest point
:52:00. > :52:07.in my life because you can never hear her say I love you again. When
:52:08. > :52:11.things do get tough, I tend to look up and think of my mum. I run to
:52:12. > :52:20.make my mum proud. A little bit of an uphill finish to
:52:21. > :52:26.the end, but most of them coping with it very well indeed. So many of
:52:27. > :52:28.the university crowd we've just seen their coming across the finish line.
:52:29. > :52:45.But there are still many yet their coming across the finish line.
:52:46. > :52:53.out there. That is Olly's Army, running for a great cause.
:52:54. > :53:01.One of the milder costumes we've seen today. We've seen three
:53:02. > :53:14.batsmans, Batmen! Three Batmans and seen today. We've seen three
:53:15. > :53:16.only two Robins, which is odd! Perhaps a little bit of rain in the
:53:17. > :53:23.act, but great conditions for running. There's no letup in the
:53:24. > :53:27.popularity of events such as this here in the UK and around the world,
:53:28. > :53:35.everyone wanting to get out on the streets. Fantastic to see.
:53:36. > :53:37.everyone wanting to get out on the popularity of the Great Manchester
:53:38. > :53:49.Run continues to grow and will grow again next year I'm sure.
:53:50. > :53:56.This is the 14th Great Manchester Run. It started back in 2003 and
:53:57. > :53:59.this time we have reached a milestone, the 300,000th finisher
:54:00. > :54:05.has crossed the line and he is with Phil Jones. You are the 300,000th
:54:06. > :54:09.finisher in the history of the Great Manchester Run. Excellent,
:54:10. > :54:14.excellent! How did they find you, how did they tell you? I was going
:54:15. > :54:20.to get some water and they called me up and said that number... It's my
:54:21. > :54:24.first Manchester run. My first 10k run has well, so I'm very excited
:54:25. > :54:32.about finishing. And you have a place in history! I'm very excited,
:54:33. > :54:37.very pleased as well. I'm lucky, I was pushing it and I slowed down, I
:54:38. > :54:41.don't know why I slowed down, but yeah, very happy. Congratulations,
:54:42. > :54:46.will you come back for more next year? Definitely I will do. You have
:54:47. > :54:51.to be 15 to running the Great Manchester Run, so not quite time
:54:52. > :54:57.for him yet, but a high-5 from Spiderman. The finish is coming
:54:58. > :55:05.through. Hard work for some, good effort.
:55:06. > :55:10.As somebody mentioned earlier on, it doesn't matter what your level of
:55:11. > :55:15.ability, what the reason may be that you want to stand on the start line
:55:16. > :55:23.and take up the challenge, no excuses, 10k, anyone can do it, even
:55:24. > :55:28.dressed like that. Well done. That is the same outfit you wore when you
:55:29. > :55:34.broke the mile record! We have had the 300,000th finisher in Great
:55:35. > :55:40.Manchester Runs today. Different looks on the faces... Camaraderie as
:55:41. > :55:47.well, running with people alongside you, you can make friends and share
:55:48. > :55:50.that moment when you come through. Part of the England rugby team
:55:51. > :55:58.coming through as well. Is it, really? No, two members of the
:55:59. > :56:02.Scottish rugby team coming through! Well, they look like they've had fun
:56:03. > :56:08.and that is the main thing. This all started out when people said they
:56:09. > :56:17.wanted fun runs, and that ethos has been continued. Well done, guys. A
:56:18. > :56:20.world champion boxer, Anthony Crolla, big supporter of the Great
:56:21. > :56:24.Manchester Run. You've taken part today with an army behind you! What
:56:25. > :56:31.was it like? It gets better and better every year. I was running
:56:32. > :56:35.with other people and the last one has just crossed the line, I made
:56:36. > :56:40.up. What is the word from the people who did it with you this year? They
:56:41. > :56:45.really enjoyed it. I crossed the line with a view of them and it's a
:56:46. > :56:50.fantastic experience. It just grows and grows every year. The support in
:56:51. > :56:54.the city comes out every year. The message for the people of Manchester
:56:55. > :56:57.is get out and have a go? Definitely, I did it once a few
:56:58. > :57:08.years back and every year since I've made sure I do it. It is a great
:57:09. > :57:11.occasion. Great to see you. I'm sure they loved seeing you to date. We're
:57:12. > :57:17.proud of you in this region and to come and give something back is
:57:18. > :57:21.tremendous. I feel lucky to be here. It just makes it better, sharing it
:57:22. > :57:26.with all these people. Thanks very much.
:57:27. > :57:35.Tonight, 8pm on BBC Two, that should be a great watch. And then league
:57:36. > :57:38.highlights on BBC One, 11th DBM this evening and five minutes later in
:57:39. > :57:46.Scotland. You can download the FA Cup catch up on the BBC iPlayer.
:57:47. > :57:48.That's it for another Great Manchester Run. Another great
:57:49. > :57:53.celebration of sport here. We've been privileged to watch Tirunesh
:57:54. > :58:02.Dibaba and Canon Bekele losing none of their fluency the road. --
:58:03. > :58:07.Kenenisa Bekele. Next year it will be back and better than ever with
:58:08. > :58:12.another half marathon. No excuses, see you then! It challenges you
:58:13. > :58:21.mentally but you feel like you're able to do anything. If I can do it,
:58:22. > :58:26.anyone can.
