:02:53. > :02:59.Apologies, we seem to have a problem with the sound on that video. But we
:03:00. > :03:06.can tell you what is coming up in the next couple of hours, so much to
:03:07. > :03:11.look forward to. Manchester is one of the hotbeds of sport in the UK
:03:12. > :03:16.and this weekend encapsulates that with the City Games on Friday night
:03:17. > :03:21.and the next generation taking part in a mini man at the Etihad Stadium
:03:22. > :03:24.yesterday. Anthony Crolla will be running again this year and he has
:03:25. > :03:27.recruited an army to do it with him and they could not ask for anyone
:03:28. > :03:33.better to motivate them. So many runners taking to the streets this
:03:34. > :03:36.morning and is opening at so many emotional and inspirational stories
:03:37. > :03:42.to tell about why they have taken on the challenge of running 10,000
:03:43. > :03:48.metres. And six Olympic gold medals between them only begins to tell the
:03:49. > :03:51.story of the brilliance of Ethiopian duo Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenenisa
:03:52. > :03:56.Bekele who head up the elite fields. And hopefully that is the gremlins
:03:57. > :04:01.out of the system! It should be a great couple of hours. It is also a
:04:02. > :04:04.day tinged with sadness because a great friend and supporter of the

:04:09. > :04:17.remember Kirsty Howard at the couple of games in 2002. -- Commonwealth
:04:18. > :04:22.Games. She had an incredibly rare illness. She had been part of the
:04:23. > :04:26.Great Manchester Run since the beginning, defying the medical odds
:04:27. > :04:30.to live as long as she did, raising millions of pounds for Francis house
:04:31. > :04:36.children's Hospice in the process. With me is one of their sisters,
:04:37. > :04:40.Zoe, and Phil Taylor, who is part of a charity. Incredibly sad that she
:04:41. > :04:44.is not here. She has been such a big part of it is so tell me how proud
:04:45. > :04:49.you are of your sister and what she achieved. I don't think words can
:04:50. > :04:53.say how pride I am. I have done this run twice and I say I will never do
:04:54. > :04:59.it again also now she can't do it herself, I feel I have to step up
:05:00. > :05:06.because she did so much for Francis House. She was so selfless, all of
:05:07. > :05:10.the challenges in her life, the focus so much on doing good for
:05:11. > :05:15.others was inspirational. Definitely. And she never moaned,
:05:16. > :05:19.even on the days she was not feeling great, she got on with it. She had
:05:20. > :05:29.so much going on but she just did what she had to and carried on
:05:30. > :05:37.racing. Tell is about Francis House. Ed first started with the Kirsty
:05:38. > :05:41.appeal. -- it started. We reached the ?5 million goal in October 2006
:05:42. > :05:49.and then launched another campaign to raise ?3.5 million to build
:05:50. > :05:55.Francis Lodge which is the juvenile section at the hospice. We have
:05:56. > :06:02.built that and the Kirsty Club now is raising funds to run Francis
:06:03. > :06:08.House. Kirsty very much touched millions of people and one
:06:09. > :06:12.particular person, David Beckham, who we saw at the Commonwealth
:06:13. > :06:17.Games. It is amazing, what she achieved. When she was born and
:06:18. > :06:24.growing up, all of the challenges she had, they did not think she
:06:25. > :06:29.would survive beyond four. She has achieved so much, far more than
:06:30. > :06:33.anybody in a lifetime could add achieved. She received numerous
:06:34. > :06:39.awards and raised millions of pounds and all for the benefit of others
:06:40. > :06:43.and more people benefit from her hard work. I am sure it will be an
:06:44. > :06:48.emotional day, all the very best. And I know you will keep the memory
:06:49. > :06:52.of Kirsty burning brightly and thank you for speaking to us. We have two
:06:53. > :06:59.roving reporters bringing you all of the stories, Jeanette Kwakye, who
:07:00. > :07:03.will be hearing from shortly but first Phil Jones. I am here with a
:07:04. > :07:12.great 400-metre runners, Iwan Thomas. We have seen in the marathon
:07:13. > :07:18.and half marathon so ten K must be a breeze! It's not too bad. Six and a
:07:19. > :07:21.bit mild is OK, people think because you are a run at you can run any
:07:22. > :07:27.distance but for a sprinter, anything over half a mile hurts! But
:07:28. > :07:30.if I am sensible, it should be OK. You are running with a bit of a
:07:31. > :07:36.difference. You have got all of these. Today is a bit strange, I am
:07:37. > :07:40.going to attempt to live broadcast the whole event on this selfie
:07:41. > :07:44.stick. It will be uploaded onto the Internet and people can watch me
:07:45. > :07:51.live, going through pain and smiling and hopefully not getting slapped on
:07:52. > :07:55.the bottom by loads of people! That always happens! I get a little
:07:56. > :08:00.friendly pat. And people can message you en route. They can, they can put
:08:01. > :08:04.a message on the screen and that comes through to me. I just wanted
:08:05. > :08:08.to grab the essence of Manchester and show people what a great event
:08:09. > :08:13.this is. The sun is out at the moment which is rare here! I just
:08:14. > :08:18.want to show people what it is like, like a bird's eye view of a race
:08:19. > :08:26.like this. It is a fantastic idea, thank you for sharing it, we will
:08:27. > :08:29.check in with the footage later. That Iwan Thomas has boundless
:08:30. > :08:37.energy! Now to another former athlete turned media presenter,
:08:38. > :08:42.Jeanette Kwakye. I am with Jo Edwards who is taking part in the
:08:43. > :08:48.race today. Tell us why today is so important. I have supported the
:08:49. > :08:50.Chris Dean now for about seven or eight years. My husband Chris was
:08:51. > :08:56.treated at The Christie. eight years. My husband Chris was
:08:57. > :09:04.treatment he had from the hospital was fantastic. -- I have supported
:09:05. > :09:08.The Christie. I got pregnant during that time while he was ill and we
:09:09. > :09:12.had a little boy and no doubt without their help he would not be
:09:13. > :09:17.here. Chris unfortunately lost his battle with stomach cancer in 2010
:09:18. > :09:22.so I decided to do some fundraising and I started with a walk from our

:09:29. > :09:34.everything about it and I do what I can for them. For you, going from a
:09:35. > :09:40.walk to run, it is a big journey. How you prepared? I have been
:09:41. > :09:45.running for a few years. I took a challenge a couple of years ago to
:09:46. > :09:47.run 500 miles in a year and I did that. I decided to do a triathlon
:09:48. > :09:52.and did a couple of half that. I decided to do a triathlon
:09:53. > :09:56.so today I'm pretty comfortable! And you have a little training
:09:57. > :10:00.so today I'm pretty comfortable! And with your son who ran
:10:01. > :10:02.so today I'm pretty comfortable! And run yesterday. He did fantastic, two
:10:03. > :10:09.kilometres in just over ten minutes so he was made up! Again, he was
:10:10. > :10:18.spurred on by running for his dad. Thank you so much and good luck.
:10:19. > :10:24.The men's wheelchair race has reached Old Trafford, there were

:10:29. > :10:34.yesterday and Simon Lawson is on course for victory at the moment
:10:35. > :10:39.after coming second last year. And Jade Jones in the women's race,
:10:40. > :10:42.Shelly Woods not far behind, they will be battling it out for the
:10:43. > :10:48.victory. Shelly Woods is the defending champion. We have a couple

:12:49. > :12:53.an early age, to finally achieve it after many years, many ups and
:12:54. > :13:01.downs, to come back and achieved that is definitely my greatest

:14:24. > :14:28.not just young athletes, it is people of all ages and levels and
:14:29. > :14:33.each is doing it for a different cores and it's something I'm very

:14:40. > :14:45.being a proud Mancunian and being asked to do that, this is the best
:14:46. > :14:49.day of the year for Manchester, the way the city comes out and support
:14:50. > :14:53.the run and a lot of great causes. I've really enjoyed it. This time
:14:54. > :14:57.last year we were talking about your rehab from the rubble incident when
:14:58. > :15:02.you tried to catch those burglars and got that head injury and what a
:15:03. > :15:06.year since then. WBA lightweight champion, this is just a little
:15:07. > :15:11.reminder of your last victory when you retain your title.
:15:12. > :15:17.What a shot that is with the right-hand! And the uppercut! The

:15:31. > :15:40.from the man from Manchester. You must be thrilled with the way
:15:41. > :15:47.this year has gone. It could not have gone any better. Last time out,
:15:48. > :15:51.being an underdog again and being a further challenge, it was even

:15:58. > :16:04.working hard and improving. Next fight? Middle of September, who? I
:16:05. > :16:09.am not sure. Hopefully a champion and many more great nights here in

:16:16. > :16:21.and time to say hello to our commentators, Steve Cram and Denise
:16:22. > :16:28.Lewis. A beautiful day in Manchester. Really looking forward
:16:29. > :16:31.to some great racing. As Jonathan was saying, following all the

:16:37. > :16:41.to get underway and the women about to be introduced to the big crowds

:18:08. > :18:18.be in Rio? We will be chatting with Paula about Tirunesh Dibaba. Great
:18:19. > :18:29.to see her back, took well over a year out. Lovely conditions. We hope
:18:30. > :18:36.for a good race here and I guess the big question is how fit is Tirunesh
:18:37. > :18:43.Dibaba? Good morning to Paula Radcliffe, you must be delighted to
:18:44. > :18:47.see her. It is great to see her back and I am eagerly anticipating seeing
:18:48. > :18:50.the kind of form she is in. She has been pretty cagey coming into this.
:18:51. > :18:54.She does not know, she took a long been pretty cagey coming into this.
:18:55. > :18:59.time to build back after the birth of her son and admittedly she gained
:19:00. > :19:04.a bit of weight, she was not running to the final stages of pregnancy, it
:19:05. > :19:09.took some time to get back into it. This is her first test out. Her main
:19:10. > :19:15.aim is to qualify for Rio. I think she will probably raise the 5000
:19:16. > :19:23.metres first. This will answer some questions and get the competitive
:19:24. > :19:31.juices flowing again in a relatively easing back into the field. I guess
:19:32. > :19:37.that is why today is important for her. If she is going to go onto the
:19:38. > :19:41.track and run a quick time, the Europeans do often pick the people
:19:42. > :19:46.running the fastest, reputations do not count for anything. For Tirunesh
:19:47. > :19:50.Dibaba, that is something that is somewhere in the future, the next
:19:51. > :19:55.three or four weeks she needs to run a quick time on the track. Today
:19:56. > :20:01.will be a huge indicator for her. Diane Nukuri runs her through the
:20:02. > :20:05.early stages as they run through the city centre, tens of thousands
:20:06. > :20:11.waiting for their opportunity to get going. They run behind where we are
:20:12. > :20:15.in Deansgate, taking a left and then heading out towards the Salford area
:20:16. > :20:20.and this part of the route, it is pretty fast. It is a flat course,
:20:21. > :20:28.Old Trafford always looming in the distance and of course the FA Cup
:20:29. > :20:35.winners last night. A fuselage heads around here today. A small loop
:20:36. > :20:44.around, not too far from the BBC HQ, Salford Quays. -- a few sore heads
:20:45. > :20:52.here today. Up into Deansgate where we are sitting patiently waiting for
:20:53. > :20:56.them to finish. So familiar route now, many of these athletes
:20:57. > :21:07.including Tirunesh Dibaba have run this. She is a two-time running
:21:08. > :21:12.winner. 2008, 2000 12. There is nothing... It is not about making
:21:13. > :21:18.excuses, but the Renault conditional reasons why she could not run fast
:21:19. > :21:27.today. The same to everyone else as well. -- 2012. The cause is pretty
:21:28. > :21:32.sheltered and not too many twists and turns, tight turns to slow the
:21:33. > :21:35.pace down. Really good conditions the getting faster times. Tirunesh
:21:36. > :21:43.Dibaba starting to ease away, she sat back a bit and allowed Diane
:21:44. > :21:58.McCurry and Fionnuala McCormack -- Diane Nukuri. It was under three
:21:59. > :22:03.hours ten minutes. We will get a split, the kilometre marker we can
:22:04. > :22:13.see what you were talking, it was about 3.9, 3.10, not too bad. A big
:22:14. > :22:20.group. Diane Nukuri leads in the early stages. This is the finish of
:22:21. > :22:27.the elite men's wheelchair race. It was a demonstration by Simon Lawson.
:22:28. > :22:31.Second only to David Weir in terms of men's wheelchair racing in the
:22:32. > :22:41.UK. He was out in front from the very start. Just outside the course
:22:42. > :22:49.record held by David Weir. 21.20. He was almost three minutes clear of
:22:50. > :22:54.Brett Crossley in second place. 3.11 the official time through the first
:22:55. > :23:03.kilometre, a pretty good, steady pace. It does not look to me as
:23:04. > :23:08.though to narrate the barber -- as though Tirunesh Dibaba is too keen
:23:09. > :23:13.on going fast yet. Training only tells you so much, you need to get
:23:14. > :23:17.into the race and feel your way into it. I would not expect to see her
:23:18. > :23:22.and less the pace slows down, I would not expect to see her make any
:23:23. > :23:25.significant moves before halfway. She wants to test herself out in the
:23:26. > :23:30.racing situation and feel her weight racing situation and feel her weight
:23:31. > :23:35.gradually back into competitive competition. 3.11, it is not
:23:36. > :23:42.superfast, it is a 32 minute pace. That is a decent enough pace for the
:23:43. > :23:52.first half, hopefully she will come back quicker in the second half.
:23:53. > :23:58.Talking about a 32 minute pace, Freya Ross is at the back of this
:23:59. > :24:05.group. Great running last night from Jess Andrews and Beth Potter,
:24:06. > :24:09.running the Olympic qualifying time in the race in Highgate last night.
:24:10. > :24:14.Jess Andrews, a massive improvement for her, going under 32 minutes,
:24:15. > :24:18.knocking a minute and a half off of her personal best. It was an
:24:19. > :24:23.outstanding step up. She has moved her personal best. It was an
:24:24. > :24:29.away to Spain and has been focusing on her running, it would be great to
:24:30. > :24:35.see her comeback and run so well. -- it was great to see her. We will
:24:36. > :24:40.have to see who the third British runner will be. We will have to see
:24:41. > :24:47.what the selectors saved. Keeping the same pace, 6.20, to two
:24:48. > :24:51.kilometres. The gaps are already opening up and Gemma Steel is not
:24:52. > :25:00.able to go with that, sitting in the second group. We saw our fourth win
:25:01. > :25:07.in the men's wheelchair race, Shelly Woods in the yellow helmet, much
:25:08. > :25:15.closer in the women's race. Shelly Woods pulled away to defend her
:25:16. > :25:26.title. Again a quick time. Just outside her own course record,
:25:27. > :25:37.21.51, she came through the second place Jade Woods. The victory was
:25:38. > :25:46.the Simon Lawson in the men's race. -- was for. Tirunesh Dibaba trying
:25:47. > :25:54.to force the issue a little bit here, Diane Nukuri kept the gap
:25:55. > :26:01.looking reasonably comfortable. Gemma Steel is in the second group.
:26:02. > :26:08.Tirunesh Dibaba breaking things up and as Paula said, perfect pacing,
:26:09. > :26:12.3.11, 3.11, identical times the best three kilometres, but now she means
:26:13. > :26:17.business. She dies and already starting to forge ahead. She will
:26:18. > :26:22.have missed racing and competing, she will enjoy getting out on
:26:23. > :26:26.familiar ground, she has the course record here. Just getting out there
:26:27. > :26:30.and being able to appreciate racing will give her extra energy and I'm
:26:31. > :26:33.sure she is enjoying running out there and is testing the others and
:26:34. > :26:37.asking some questions of them in terms of how fast they
:26:38. > :26:38.asking some questions of them in now. It has been interesting, her
:26:39. > :26:46.younger sister is the one who now. It has been interesting, her
:26:47. > :26:51.the big star, Roque in the world record at the 1500, even rumours she
:26:52. > :26:56.may do the five under ten, she cannot double up with a 5000 unless
:26:57. > :27:02.she runs a heat and a final on the same day. Maybe she is thinking of
:27:03. > :27:06.doing that. It is interesting, they kind of shift. Tirunesh Dibaba has
:27:07. > :27:11.had to plan her own route through here. We are not aware of a 10,000
:27:12. > :27:15.metre race that she could easily slot into. We will have to find one
:27:16. > :27:20.and set it up somewhere and hope that she can run quick enough to
:27:21. > :27:27.attract the attention of the Ethiopian selectors. There are
:27:28. > :27:33.already five Ethiopians who run faster than her, she is capable of
:27:34. > :27:45.running faster though. The spotlight has shifted.
:27:46. > :27:54.They are close her and her assistant, I don't whether they run
:27:55. > :27:58.together. There will be a bit of fire, she wants to get back to the
:27:59. > :28:04.same level. Talking about getting back, we can pop back to the start
:28:05. > :28:08.with Phil Jones. I am here on the VIP bus with who you could call to
:28:09. > :28:14.stall works of the Great Manchester Run, Peter Hook and Chris from
:28:15. > :28:26.Coronation Street. What brings you back? It is a good time to go to the
:28:27. > :28:37.shops. I am so slow! How quick are you? I normally get round into times
:28:38. > :28:42.-- in two days. We could go around together! This week
:28:43. > :28:46.-- in two days. We could go around weeks off. Just to see if this makes
:28:47. > :28:53.any difference, I don't think it will. Most of it is done on
:28:54. > :28:59.adrenaline. This is my 10th run. Congratulations on that. You come
:29:00. > :29:08.back for great charitable causes. We used to run for leukaemia and
:29:09. > :29:16.lymphoma research which is now being renamed Blood Wise. The Christie,
:29:17. > :29:19.they have helped many of my friends and family, it is the least I could
:29:20. > :29:26.do. Some and family, it is the least I could
:29:27. > :29:36.Manchester. It is a great occasion. -- some up the occasion. It gets you
:29:37. > :29:42.going, they are all shouting at you. It is an embarrassing. I am thinking
:29:43. > :29:46.of doing it masked. It is great you come back each year, wonderful to
:29:47. > :29:55.see you here. Enjoy the race. Thank you. Great to see them and so many
:29:56. > :29:59.celebrities taking part raising so much money for charity. Around about
:30:00. > :30:06.30 million I think is the expected target which is phenomenal. At the
:30:07. > :30:16.front it is Tirunesh Dibaba, Edna Kiplagat and Diane Nukuri. Diane
:30:17. > :30:26.Nukuri run a marathon in New York. They are hanging on to Tirunesh
:30:27. > :30:32.Dibaba. We are just approaching four kilometres, she has picked it up,
:30:33. > :30:40.for five seconds, it is broken up, just the three of them now. Old
:30:41. > :30:44.Trafford. It is quiet today, but it was not quiet down in Wembley
:30:45. > :30:52.yesterday, a great day for the club, commiserations to all Palace fans.
:30:53. > :31:04.The streets around Old Trafford quiet. Gemma Steel just struggling a
:31:05. > :31:12.little bit. Daunay wearing 104 and the Polish athlete, Dominika
:31:13. > :31:19.Napieraj 110 and Inglese of Italy. It has been a difficult period for
:31:20. > :31:23.Gemma Steel. She said herself that she wanted to make the 10,000 metre
:31:24. > :31:28.team. She knew how well some of the other girls were going but is
:31:29. > :31:35.struggling to stay with that second group. Dibaba, it is not twisty and
:31:36. > :31:40.Tony Hibbert slightly downhill away from the football ground so they are
:31:41. > :31:48.able to keep stretching out -- twisty and turning. They went
:31:49. > :31:54.through the third kilometre in 3.0 six. That is what did the damage.
:31:55. > :32:05.Tirunesh Dibaba is looking in control of this and she looks the
:32:06. > :32:15.most comfortable right now. I think what happened with Gemma Steel, she
:32:16. > :32:20.went to San and raced on the 10,000 metres on the road. She picked up a
:32:21. > :32:24.virus and struggled to come back. She came into this feeling more
:32:25. > :32:31.upbeat and stronger but she is not back to her form of last year.
:32:32. > :32:39.Really stretching them out. You can see the little gaps, Nukuri hanging
:32:40. > :32:43.on. And Edna Kiplagat, having flown in from America, that might have had
:32:44. > :32:48.an effect with some jet lag so Dibaba is taking advantage as they
:32:49. > :32:53.approach halfway. It is the FA Cup final yesterday, a big day for
:32:54. > :32:55.football and it is a big year for football with the European
:32:56. > :32:58.Championship is coming up, we are all hoping England will be doing
:32:59. > :33:01.Championship is coming up, we are well and the man who has to make
:33:02. > :33:06.sure that happens is our started today and he is with Phil Jones.
:33:07. > :33:12.And obviously you are talking about Roy Hodgson, the England manager. It
:33:13. > :33:16.is all about France coming up but today it is all about Manchester
:33:17. > :33:22.with a big game later and the starter today. First of all I'm very
:33:23. > :33:28.happy and honoured to be asked to assist the start. It is fascinating
:33:29. > :33:31.to see so many people taking part and watching and I can only hope
:33:32. > :33:36.that they have good weather for the race because I am certain that will
:33:37. > :33:41.help them. You always get a warm welcome in Manchester, I hope you
:33:42. > :33:46.get that later for the England team as the build-up start in earnest for
:33:47. > :33:49.the Euros. It does today but we have had a good few days training at St
:33:50. > :33:53.George's Park and we are looking forward to the game this afternoon
:33:54. > :33:58.which is important for us, the first in our three preparation games here.
:33:59. > :34:03.I am sure that the players and staff are all very excited about playing
:34:04. > :34:06.at the City of Manchester Stadium. Anything you still need to learn
:34:07. > :34:12.about your squad in the next few games or have you got it pretty much
:34:13. > :34:16.in your head what to do? I know the players very well. The only one I
:34:17. > :34:20.don't know well is Marcus Rashford but all the others I have worked
:34:21. > :34:24.with over quite a long period so it is not a question of finding out
:34:25. > :34:29.about them, it is just making certain that we start our
:34:30. > :34:33.preparation and, when the game against Russia in Marseille comes
:34:34. > :34:39.around, we are 100% prepared as to how we want to play. And do you get
:34:40. > :34:43.a sense of the excitement building up? The nation goes football crazy
:34:44. > :34:48.in the major championships and I'm sure you're being approached all the
:34:49. > :34:53.time about it. I am but I enjoy it. I think it is very healthy and I'm
:34:54. > :34:56.delighted that the country is excited. I also feel we have an
:34:57. > :35:01.awful lot of support throughout the country. I think people like the
:35:02. > :35:06.team and what they are trying to do. We go there with high hopes and we
:35:07. > :35:10.also carry the high hopes of the nation. Good luck this afternoon and
:35:11. > :35:15.with the Euros and enjoy the occasion today. I shall, thank you.
:35:16. > :35:22.Good luck to Roy England team and our other home
:35:23. > :35:27.nation teams taking part as well. Tirunesh Dibaba has put her foot
:35:28. > :35:34.down. The last kilometre was the quickest of the race. Diane Nukuri
:35:35. > :35:41.is now struggling. Edna Kiplagat is hanging on the Ethiopian. I wouldn't
:35:42. > :35:46.say she is looking like her old self but this will be a real confidence
:35:47. > :35:52.booster for Dibaba if she can keep forging on and keep the pace going.
:35:53. > :35:57.When you come back, the first six, 7k, it is in that bit of the race
:35:58. > :36:03.that you find out how fit you are. It is, and the closer you get to the
:36:04. > :36:07.finish, the easier it gets. Certainly she doesn't look like she
:36:08. > :36:12.is putting herself under any undue pressure or asking questions she
:36:13. > :36:16.might not be able to answered. She looks smooth and controlled, a quick
:36:17. > :36:21.look over her shoulder to see who has dropped off and it is Diane
:36:22. > :36:25.Nukuri who has not been able to go with them. She seems to have got a
:36:26. > :36:28.bit annoyed by Edna Kiplagat running in her slipstream and has moved
:36:29. > :36:38.across the road to encourage her to run alongside and give her a bit
:36:39. > :36:45.less drafting. Last week Edna rant about 31.58. That was about the same
:36:46. > :36:52.time as we saw at Highgate last night -- she ran. That may be
:36:53. > :36:57.explained why Diane Nukuri is unable to go with this pace as it picks up.
:36:58. > :37:01.Again Dibaba looks across, it is almost as if she wants her to take
:37:02. > :37:09.Again Dibaba looks across, it is she is not that keen to keep doing
:37:10. > :37:14.it herself. I agree, just going through 6k. Fionnuala McCormack is
:37:15. > :37:18.now in fourth place. Gemma Steel is in eighth place I can tell you,
:37:19. > :37:22.still trying to hang onto that little group that she was with who
:37:23. > :37:29.are about five seconds behind McCormack. Dibaba will want to win,
:37:30. > :37:34.that is the first thing, and to make sure she does nothing silly. But she
:37:35. > :37:40.will want to win well and feeling good and hopefully with a time well
:37:41. > :37:47.under 32 minutes I would think. They are on schedule for that. That
:37:48. > :37:52.previous kilometre was still on pace, suddenly maintaining the pace
:37:53. > :37:57.they have been setting. She settled for a bit and got the feeling that
:37:58. > :38:03.Kiplagat would not pick it up so, because I think she is chasing a
:38:04. > :38:07.time, she has defined out what shape she is in. You can't do that by
:38:08. > :38:11.sitting and waiting so she might as well push on and that will tell her
:38:12. > :38:15.a lot more than just sitting behind Kiplagat and waiting for the win.
:38:16. > :38:21.Absolutely, she will get some answers at the end of the race. If
:38:22. > :38:22.you compare a road ten Kate with a track ten Cate, you should be able
:38:23. > :38:42.to go a bit quicker -- ten K. A pretty nice day in Manchester. We
:38:43. > :38:51.had a A pretty nice day in Manchester. We
:38:52. > :38:57.thankfully that has all gone. And now we can look forward to the start
:38:58. > :39:04.of the men's elite race and the massed ranks of the thousands who
:39:05. > :39:11.will follow them on this now famous route so let's introduce you to some
:39:12. > :39:17.of the contenders. Matthew Hynes from Middlesbrough, he will perhaps
:39:18. > :39:25.be the best of the British. He won his last race, the Middlesbrough
:39:26. > :39:33.Park Run. Next to him, someone who had a brilliant race last autumn
:39:34. > :39:37.when he ran for the marathon which made him the new German
:39:38. > :39:40.record-holder for that distance. He had to drop out of London sadly when
:39:41. > :39:50.he was hoping for a good performance. Zane Robertson,
:39:51. > :39:55.Commonwealth frons medallist at 5000 metres and he has shown that he can
:39:56. > :40:02.mix it with the top Africans when he is fit -- bronze-medallist.
:40:03. > :40:11.He has never won this race, he has been second on two occasions but
:40:12. > :40:16.Wilson Kipsang, former marathon world record holder, he is hoping to
:40:17. > :40:23.will be his day but if it is to be, yes to beat a legend of the sport,
:40:24. > :40:27.from Ethiopia, the three-time Olympic champion, Kenenisa Bekele.
:40:28. > :40:31.He came back with a bang in the London Marathon with a great
:40:32. > :40:37.performance. Sadly, not good enough to see him selected for Rio. But
:40:38. > :40:48.let's get them under way. Roy Hodgson, full of smiles as ever.
:40:49. > :40:56.The Great Manchester Run is about to get underway. There we go. The
:40:57. > :41:05.klaxon sounded by the England manager. Many will continue to cross
:41:06. > :41:08.the line over the next couple of hours because they can't all go on
:41:09. > :41:18.the route at the same time because it is only 10k. These are the lucky
:41:19. > :41:22.ones who get to go first. A wonderful organisational effort to
:41:23. > :41:26.get so many people primed and ready to go and get them away safely
:41:27. > :41:33.across the start line will stop you can see how they are channelled in
:41:34. > :41:40.sober is not a mad rush. Everybody has their own individual chip. --
:41:41. > :41:43.they are channelled so there is not. Perhaps they might be running for a
:41:44. > :41:50.personal best, looking at their watches as they cross the line as
:41:51. > :41:59.ever. And it is great to see how this race has grown over the years.
:42:00. > :42:04.Today we expect to see the 300,000th finisher to cross the line at around
:42:05. > :42:11.about 12:30pm. We can go through some of the other names as you can
:42:12. > :42:16.see the elite start list. McNeil from Australia. I would not expect
:42:17. > :42:23.any of these to figure at the front. Good to see Richard Goodman having a
:42:24. > :42:26.run. And just to reiterate, most of the British 10,000 metres runner
:42:27. > :42:32.were in that trial yesterday. Ross Millington came out on top in that
:42:33. > :42:35.race at Highgate. Andy Burnham and others were attempting to cement
:42:36. > :42:39.their place but it did not go quite so well for them as it did for the
:42:40. > :42:44.women so they will have to wait and see. Nobody got the Olympic
:42:45. > :42:49.qualifying time last night. We are back with the elite women, Dibaba
:42:50. > :42:54.still has Kiplagat on her shoulder, still cannot shake off the two-time
:42:55. > :43:00.world marathon champion, despite setting a good pace. 3.84 the
:43:01. > :43:08.seventh kilometre. She is trying hard and pushing but the brigade is
:43:09. > :43:12.still there. Edna Kiplagat is not interested in taking on the pace --
:43:13. > :43:25.Kiplagat is still there. She is making Tirunesh Dibaba work
:43:26. > :43:32.for this as they go through eight kilometres in 25.0. Very even pace
:43:33. > :43:36.and very controlled. She might be working out if she has saved a bit
:43:37. > :43:40.in her legs for the final stages because she is reckoning she will
:43:41. > :43:46.not shake off Edna Kiplagat and will need to save a bit although, unless
:43:47. > :43:48.she is faking it a bit to force Kiplagat to take it on, she looks as
:43:49. > :43:55.though she is starting to struggle. Kiplagat to take it on, she looks as
:43:56. > :43:59.This is Nukuri. One thing I used to say about Tirunesh Dibaba, I always
:44:00. > :44:03.thought she was one of the most economical runners. She has the
:44:04. > :44:08.speed and power and when she was fit and at her best, you would a video
:44:09. > :44:14.and say that is what a distance runner should look like. She used to
:44:15. > :44:18.float over the ground. Watching her today, she has got a little way to
:44:19. > :44:24.go to get back to that. That is expected, it will take some time. I
:44:25. > :44:28.think she has to try to concentrate on winning the race. They are still
:44:29. > :44:32.setting a pretty good pace, she should be reasonably happy but she
:44:33. > :44:36.will not want to be beaten by Edna Kiplagat today. And she will be
:44:37. > :44:39.fairly confident that she has retained her finishing speed and
:44:40. > :44:44.will be able to use that and will be thinking about trying to keep level
:44:45. > :44:52.with Edna Kiplagat and not take too much out of the tact and -- out of
:44:53. > :44:56.the tank. She still looks a beautiful, economical runner, but
:44:57. > :44:59.not floating as normal as you say, and if you contrast the strength in
:45:00. > :45:05.her legs, you can see she has missed a bit, and you can see the miles in
:45:06. > :45:12.the legs of Edna Kiplagat. That is not quite there with Tirunesh Dibaba
:45:13. > :45:17.where it used be. I agree. That can and will come back, I'm pretty sure.
:45:18. > :45:23.Roads are one thing, track is another. She knows the sort of shape
:45:24. > :45:27.she will have to be in if she is to be selected for Rio which will be
:45:28. > :45:33.tough, and then to go and content for a medal. It would be great to
:45:34. > :45:34.see her there. The sport needs it big start at the major
:45:35. > :45:45.championships. The men have gone through the first
:45:46. > :45:51.kilometre and run 2.30 five. Wilson Kipsang still has a bit of the
:45:52. > :45:59.London Marathon in his legs. Arne Gabius Isner as we expected, so is
:46:00. > :46:10.Robertson. Wilson Kipsang is forcing the issue. We were not expecting too
:46:11. > :46:14.much from Kenenisa Bekele and he pulled it out of the bag for the
:46:15. > :46:17.London Marathon. Everything we were hearing in the build-up was he was
:46:18. > :46:24.not in shape, he really turned it around. He had not really done a lot
:46:25. > :46:39.of volume and long runs, but he was able to hold in and record that 2.6.
:46:40. > :46:44.Looking at Wilson Kipsang and Kenny said the KLA, I would say he would
:46:45. > :46:54.come back a bit better for this race than Wilson Kipsang would have been
:46:55. > :47:00.able to. -- and Kenenisa Bekele. Tirunesh Dibaba trying to force the
:47:01. > :47:08.issue. That looks like a hierarchy carry than the old Tirunesh Dibaba.
:47:09. > :47:11.She checks her watch. She knows that Edna Kiplagat with 800 to go, she
:47:12. > :47:15.would never normally Edna Kiplagat with 800 to go, she
:47:16. > :47:19.to even frightened Tirunesh Dibaba in any way whatsoever, but there
:47:20. > :47:24.will be some doubts when you are coming back. At this point you would
:47:25. > :47:29.think she will be happy to sit, but she still wants to keep pushing and
:47:30. > :47:33.keep the pressure on. She is definitely starting to push earlier
:47:34. > :47:38.than she would normally do. I have to say that Edna Kiplagat, this race
:47:39. > :47:43.will have given her a lot of confidence no matter what the
:47:44. > :47:47.outcome is over the last 600, 700 metres, she is struggling a bit, she
:47:48. > :47:52.was third in Tokyo, she raced well last week in New York. She has not
:47:53. > :47:57.been back to the form that saw how one the world titles, she has been
:47:58. > :48:11.working her way back to it. Now for the first time Tirunesh Dibaba
:48:12. > :48:15.keeps looking behind and she sees a five-metre gap, looking at her
:48:16. > :48:17.watch, I don't why. She needs to concentrate on running towards the
:48:18. > :48:20.finish. The crowd is starting to build and this looks better from
:48:21. > :48:24.Tirunesh Dibaba. She is confident, checking every few strides as to
:48:25. > :48:30.what is happening. All she needs to know is the gap is growing and the
:48:31. > :48:33.race is in the bag. Now she can concentrate on finishing strongly in
:48:34. > :48:38.the last hundred metres or so. Coming round the final bend, a
:48:39. > :48:43.uphill finish in the Great Manchester Run. It is good to see
:48:44. > :48:48.Tirunesh Dibaba coming back after so long away. The last here two years
:48:49. > :48:53.ago and this could be the start what we hope will be a true comeback onto
:48:54. > :48:58.the track and perhaps a return to the sort of form that saw her win in
:48:59. > :49:04.London, win in Beijing, taking the Olympic gold medals. It would be
:49:05. > :49:09.fantastic to see her back in Rio. Tirunesh Dibaba into the last 200
:49:10. > :49:14.metres or so. The crowd getting ready to receive her. The time has
:49:15. > :49:17.been pretty good today, it would give her a small indication, not
:49:18. > :49:19.until she gets on the track and has a go will she find out what shape
:49:20. > :49:21.she is in, but this has been a go will she find out what shape
:49:22. > :49:26.comeback for the three a go will she find out what shape
:49:27. > :49:32.champion, Tirunesh Dibaba returns to win the Great Manchester Run for the
:49:33. > :49:37.third time. A winning time around 31.16, we will get that confirmed
:49:38. > :49:41.officially, that is a pretty good return for Tirunesh Dibaba. Edna
:49:42. > :49:47.Kiplagat did so well to hold on for so long, as ever she was never going
:49:48. > :49:53.to be able to content with Tirunesh Dibaba's speed in the latter stages.
:49:54. > :49:56.Diane Nukuri, a good performance, expect to see her running in the
:49:57. > :50:05.Olympic games. She will take third spot. And under 32 minutes. A good
:50:06. > :50:15.performance from her. Diane Nukuri, a fair way behind. Tirunesh Dibaba,
:50:16. > :50:31.must have been a little bit nervous before today. Fionnuala McCormack
:50:32. > :50:42.was fourth for a long time. She gets fifth. The French athlete comes in
:50:43. > :50:47.at six. Gemma Steel, watching the clock as she comes up. She will be
:50:48. > :50:51.the first of the British athletes to cross the line. It will be under 33
:50:52. > :50:55.minutes, that is a bit of an improvement from what we have seen
:50:56. > :51:03.so far from Gemma Steel, 32.40 three. And there are our top three.
:51:04. > :51:16.To Mr Barber looks like she has only just been out for a stroll, a coffee
:51:17. > :51:22.and a croissant, a 10K run. -- to Tirunesh Dibaba. A great performance
:51:23. > :51:28.from her as she heads towards her campaign to get into the team 30.
:51:29. > :51:33.Back with the men. Talking about getting in the teams are Rio. Where
:51:34. > :51:37.use a prize when there was the announcement over the weekend that
:51:38. > :51:43.the Ethiopians have only selected Kenenisa Bekele as a reserve? If you
:51:44. > :51:51.look at time, he is not the quickest. Given his track record, I
:51:52. > :51:55.was surprised, given how he came back to run so well in London on a
:51:56. > :52:01.summer course, the other Ethiopians had run fast. Having said that, the
:52:02. > :52:05.Ethiopians, they were not particularly organise, none of the
:52:06. > :52:09.runners in London knew what they had to do to get selected. They have
:52:10. > :52:13.done this in the past, real five or six names and then they will pick
:52:14. > :52:18.from that closer to the time. Don't read too much into who is reserved
:52:19. > :52:24.and who is on the team, they can change that as they see the form
:52:25. > :52:29.they are in. They have just gone through four: metres in just under
:52:30. > :52:39.11.5 minutes. They are not going back quickly. -- four kilometres. I
:52:40. > :52:45.don't think Zane Robertson has been in such great shape. His half
:52:46. > :52:52.marathon he ran in New York, a high 62 minutes. The last 10K he ran was
:52:53. > :52:56.not that quick either. Probably today is perfect for him to be
:52:57. > :53:02.competitive, but he was suggesting he was going to try to run down in
:53:03. > :53:07.the lower 28 minutes, he has a way to go to pick up to that pays, that
:53:08. > :53:11.is why he has decided to force it may be. He has seen the times
:53:12. > :53:21.through four: metres, picks it up with Kenenisa Bekele and checking to
:53:22. > :53:28.through four: metres, picks it up see who has come away from the
:53:29. > :53:33.group. Wilson Kipsang, he trains with a group in Ethiopian. He likes
:53:34. > :53:41.to get himself in shape in Kenya, he runs with a group in Ethiopian, gets
:53:42. > :53:45.himself into good shape. He is accustomed to training along Wilson
:53:46. > :53:50.Kipsang, Kenenisa Bekele. They are both Manchester United supporters,
:53:51. > :53:54.may have got a boost as they went past Old Trafford. They are working
:53:55. > :53:59.together to get the pace moving along, four of them are clearly
:54:00. > :54:04.moving away from the rest. It is interesting to see the elites
:54:05. > :54:10.grabbing some water, it is therefore the masses, leave enough, there are
:54:11. > :54:17.30,000 people behind you! Jeanette is waiting with some of the people
:54:18. > :54:22.ready to go. I have found Batman and Robin! Isn't this fantastic! Your
:54:23. > :54:30.names are a bit more simple than Batman and Robin. I cannot hear a
:54:31. > :54:36.thing! This is Mike, you are from Salford, can you hear me now? Can
:54:37. > :54:40.you tell me why you are here today. We are raising money for Cancer
:54:41. > :54:44.research, we have been doing the locals around Manchester as Batman
:54:45. > :54:50.and Robin and this is the big event today. Thanks to everyone who gave
:54:51. > :54:54.us some money. Robin, do you take your instructions from Batman, will
:54:55. > :55:01.he be pacing you today? I will be behind him. He is not allowed to be
:55:02. > :55:09.made! I am not allowed to beat him at all. It is Batman and Robin, not
:55:10. > :55:15.Robin and Batman, there is a pecking order. I am expecting a good spring
:55:16. > :55:31.-- sprint finish. Good luck. Jeanette with some of those who may
:55:32. > :55:35.get a little warm out there today. The sun is shining, good to see.
:55:36. > :55:44.Look at them all waiting for their chances. There are various waves,
:55:45. > :55:50.people know when to get ready to get on the road. They are raring to go.
:55:51. > :55:56.Meanwhile, approaching halfway. The mens rea is, I have seen they have
:55:57. > :56:00.just gone through halfway. 14.17, it did pick up in the physical matter,
:56:01. > :56:02.they had been going at a fairly slow place.
:56:03. > :56:13.they had been going at a fairly slow Pace. Heading for something around
:56:14. > :56:19.20 point five minutes. The fifth column that has broken the field up
:56:20. > :56:24.a bit. Wilson Kipsang has taken on the challenge and is building the
:56:25. > :56:35.pace. A mirror image of the women's race. That has caused questions to
:56:36. > :56:42.be asked of David McNeill, he is dropping back from this. Zane
:56:43. > :56:46.Robertson is taking it to them, but he is dropping a bit round the
:56:47. > :56:50.corner and instead of pushing the pace, he is the one trying to hang
:56:51. > :57:00.on as Wilson Kipsang keeps the pace moving along. You can see it on his
:57:01. > :57:11.face, he is starting to look as though he is struggling a little bit
:57:12. > :57:16.to keep on with this place. -- pace. A bit quiet down in Salford this
:57:17. > :57:21.morning, if you people out there watching and cheering on these
:57:22. > :57:28.world-class, you look at Kenenisa Bekele, he is one of the best if not
:57:29. > :57:32.the best ever, some people say be quiet when you say those sorts of
:57:33. > :57:38.things! But it is good to see him back, a lot of people had written
:57:39. > :57:43.him off. The performance in London if nothing else will have done a lot
:57:44. > :57:51.for his confidence. Wilson Kipsang, he has had an up-and-down period. He
:57:52. > :57:54.will want to make sure... He would love to get the victory today.
:57:55. > :58:00.Robertson hanging on there. I suppose you never know, you know
:58:01. > :58:08.better than most, Paula, when to come back and get back on the road,
:58:09. > :58:11.how much time it takes to recover. Wilson Kipsang will have been
:58:12. > :58:18.disappointed with his performance in London. Where is Kenenisa Bekele
:58:19. > :58:22.will be absolutely delighted. The levels of confidence coming into
:58:23. > :58:26.today. It can make a difference how you run the race, Wilson Kipsang
:58:27. > :58:30.will be disappointed, he did not run to tick the well by his standards in
:58:31. > :58:34.London, but maybe he did not push too hard, maybe he switched off when
:58:35. > :58:39.he realised he was not having a great day. With the frustration, he
:58:40. > :58:44.was able to bounce back here and run well. He knows that to stand any
:58:45. > :58:49.chance against Kenenisa Bekele, he has to make it a hard race from this
:58:50. > :58:52.far out, because he cannot get anywhere near to
:58:53. > :58:53.far out, because he cannot get over the closing 800 metres, even
:58:54. > :58:59.1000 metres of the over the closing 800 metres, even
:59:00. > :59:04.Already he has turned the screw enough,, it looks like they are
:59:05. > :59:13.maintaining the pace, opening up growing daylight with Zane Robertson
:59:14. > :59:18.behind. I should remind people, a great story about the Robertson
:59:19. > :59:22.twins. They went out to Kenya, I render seeing them on a couple of
:59:23. > :59:26.occasions and they said we will live and train like the Kenyans do and
:59:27. > :59:33.see what happens. They turned their careers around. They have turned
:59:34. > :59:37.into very good athletes, but they talk a lot about the change of
:59:38. > :59:43.attitude in terms of living, breathing, running, and
:59:44. > :59:48.understanding the likes of Wilson Kipsang is from there as well. When
:59:49. > :59:52.you are surrounded by that culture and ethos, it is amazing how much
:59:53. > :59:55.difference it can make. They struggled to get their own
:59:56. > :59:59.federation to recognise their abilities and help them, so they
:00:00. > :00:05.went and helped themselves. They have had a great four years.
:00:06. > :00:14.Struggling today though to hang onto theirs. The seven kilometre was 244,
:00:15. > :00:21.Wilson Kipsang pushing on. Richard Goodman miss having a good race, he
:00:22. > :00:28.was back in fifth place. We will get a split at eight, tours. Wilson
:00:29. > :00:32.Kipsang and Kenenisa Bekele, an Ethiopian and Kenyon in battle. Two
:00:33. > :00:42.of the great names of marathon running.
:00:43. > :00:55.Bekele as to persuade the Ethiopian selectors that he is worth a gamble
:00:56. > :00:57.for Rio -- has to. Just a stride or two between these two, very much
:00:58. > :01:02.mirroring what we saw two between these two, very much
:01:03. > :01:08.race with Kipsang knowing the danger of Bekele will stop a lot of miles
:01:09. > :01:14.in his legs but he always has and he always will, you never lose your
:01:15. > :01:19.ability to sprint finish. Bekele looks good, relaxed, running well,
:01:20. > :01:26.dropping his arms to show he is relaxed. He does look very relaxed.
:01:27. > :01:30.A lot of his normal bounce is there. That can take a while to come back
:01:31. > :01:38.after running a hard marathon like he did, having to dig deep in the
:01:39. > :01:43.final stages to be able to run that Watt. He has that strength in his
:01:44. > :01:54.legs and he is bouncing along, as if to say, you haven't shaken the oft
:01:55. > :01:58.-- to be able to run 2.06. I need somebody who is a bit more up on the
:01:59. > :02:05.fan suggests costumes. They are going to be warm! Great conditions,
:02:06. > :02:14.a slight breeze out there, the sun is out but the temperature is not
:02:15. > :02:20.too high, perfect for a 10k. These two are locked together stride for
:02:21. > :02:23.stride. 250 on the previous kilometre.
:02:24. > :02:31.They have slowed a little bit because the fifth and sixth were
:02:32. > :02:34.pretty quick. Kipsang is looking to hang onto Bekele who seems to be
:02:35. > :02:42.holding himself back a little bit. It has not been super fast. It has
:02:43. > :02:47.been quicker since 4k which is why these two are out on their own.
:02:48. > :02:50.There is Robertson will stop Bekele would have the option, he talked
:02:51. > :02:54.about maybe going onto the track but I don't think that is an option
:02:55. > :03:00.because he will have focused so much on the marathon. To change onto the
:03:01. > :03:05.10,000 metres, because of their strength in depth, even the great
:03:06. > :03:09.Kenenisa Bekele, only the marathon is an option at Rio. Particularly
:03:10. > :03:15.given his injury problems come into the London Marathon. Those calf and
:03:16. > :03:17.Achilles problems, that means getting into spikes and racing on
:03:18. > :03:22.the track is a huge getting into spikes and racing on
:03:23. > :03:29.probably prefer to keep working in races like this, to reinforce his
:03:30. > :03:33.form to the selectors and hope they will look at his championship
:03:34. > :03:36.performance record and his huge potential in the marathon against
:03:37. > :03:41.the fast times that the other runners have recorded over the
:03:42. > :03:50.distance. They are going through eight kilometres in 22.40 which is
:03:51. > :03:54.maintaining that pace. You can see the gap to Robertson is 12 seconds
:03:55. > :03:59.and growing and he might come under threat for that third spot because
:04:00. > :04:04.McNeill is running strongly but is still nine seconds behind. This is a
:04:05. > :04:09.long, straight road, and if people had started to falter you can reel
:04:10. > :04:18.them in but these two have got it to themselves. The pace picked up in
:04:19. > :04:23.the middle after the first 4k, not going too fast, and then they pulled
:04:24. > :04:27.away with Robertson but Robertson could not maintain the pace. They
:04:28. > :04:31.are not running super fast and Robertson is looking very tired, may
:04:32. > :04:35.be paying for that uplift in the middle and he will come under
:04:36. > :04:39.pressure from his Antipodean rival very shortly. He looks as though he
:04:40. > :04:44.is limping a little bit and does not look comfortable. He will struggle
:04:45. > :04:51.to hold on to third place. In contrast, these two look pretty
:04:52. > :04:56.comfortable, Kenenisa still dropping his arms. In contrast to Dibaba, he
:04:57. > :04:59.does not have a particular time goal, he just wants to run well and
:05:00. > :05:14.win He just wants to race well and come
:05:15. > :05:18.away having beaten Kipsang. It is definitely Bekele who is forcing the
:05:19. > :05:23.issue and Kipsang is happy for him to do that. He knows the inevitable
:05:24. > :05:28.will happen in the latter stages and he will hang on for as long as he
:05:29. > :05:32.can. I guess Bekele will wait as long as he can't. They are picked it
:05:33. > :05:39.up so they will both be hurting a bit. Just a metre. This is not a big
:05:40. > :05:50.effort from Bekele to win it yet but he has another look at Kipsang. 2.48
:05:51. > :05:58.for the eighth kilometre. And now about a mile to go, a little less
:05:59. > :06:03.than that, about 1400 metres. And when they see the 9k, I would not be
:06:04. > :06:08.surprised if we cede Bekele putting his foot down a bit more. He would
:06:09. > :06:13.be worried about being outkicked by Kipsang but he will want to relax in
:06:14. > :06:19.the last 800 metres. We are expecting Robertson, he was not
:06:20. > :06:25.moving well, to come under pressure. They have gone through nine
:06:26. > :06:33.kilometres in about 25.2. And almost on cue, Bekele thinks enough is
:06:34. > :06:38.enough and away he goes. Like Dibaba, it is such a mirror of the
:06:39. > :06:43.women's race, he looks behind every few strides and suddenly the gap is
:06:44. > :06:47.there. That was much easier than four Dibaba who had to work to shake
:06:48. > :06:54.off Edna Kiplagat. She was still getting over her shoulder in the
:06:55. > :06:58.later stages. Bekele moved away easily and he is still checking
:06:59. > :07:02.later stages. Bekele moved away he can relax and enjoy this run in.
:07:03. > :07:08.I don't think Wilson Kipsang will be able to get close to challenging
:07:09. > :07:12.him. Bekele building his lead, Kipsang is in second place,
:07:13. > :07:16.Robertson coming under pressure. Richard Goodman is running well, the
:07:17. > :07:25.first of the British athletes, in fifth place. There he is, from the
:07:26. > :07:32.shaft three Harriers. -- Shaftesbury Harriers. Running very strongly in
:07:33. > :07:36.and heading for a good performance. Bekele, with every stride,
:07:37. > :07:43.stretching his lead away from Wilson Kipsang who is looking a bit ragged
:07:44. > :07:48.and tired. And like Dibaba, when he is at his best, there is no better
:07:49. > :07:53.side than Kenenisa Bekele will stop he is looking strong, moving
:07:54. > :07:56.side than Kenenisa Bekele will stop Obviously managed to shake off that
:07:57. > :08:00.London Marathon where he had a great performance, and he has enjoyed it
:08:01. > :08:07.here in Manchester and it is great to see him back. Kenenisa Bekele
:08:08. > :08:13.will of course hope, all he can do is show he is in shape and ready.
:08:14. > :08:16.For somebody as great as he is with his record and
:08:17. > :08:17.For somebody as great as he is with track, he has to hope that the
:08:18. > :08:23.selectors put some trust in him and selectors put some trust in him and
:08:24. > :08:27.you said at the beginning, how Ethiopia don't always they go on
:08:28. > :08:31.camp and look at how people are performing. Despite the selections
:08:32. > :08:39.they make this far out, they can change their minds. All this will do
:08:40. > :08:45.is serve as a little reminder. Kenenisa Bekele, yes, it is only
:08:46. > :08:50.over 10k but he can beat the best and was almost putting his arms out
:08:51. > :08:54.to say, what did you expect? He is back to winning ways, the great
:08:55. > :08:59.champion that is Kenenisa Bekele who takes the title of the Great
:09:00. > :09:09.Manchester Run. It is great to see him back. 28.08, a really solid
:09:10. > :09:17.performance. Too good for everybody including Wilson Kipsang. We are
:09:18. > :09:24.watching for third spot and Robertson is going to hang on.
:09:25. > :09:28.Sorry, McNeill has passed Robertson. He looks behind. Robertson was
:09:29. > :09:31.struggling in the latter stages and as expected the Australian comes
:09:32. > :09:39.through and that might be his best ever on the roads will stop McNeill
:09:40. > :09:43.gets third spot, Robertson coming in for fourth place, looking a bit
:09:44. > :09:49.tired. I think he forced things a bit in the middle. We suggested that
:09:50. > :09:54.his races coming into this did not look great. Evidence of that. He was
:09:55. > :09:58.under 29 minutes but I know he was hoping for something a lot quicker
:09:59. > :10:04.than that. Great to see Kenenisa Bekele back. He wonder
:10:05. > :10:12.-- he won this race in 2014 so this was his second victory. Debra
:10:13. > :10:20.Selassie won it on four occasions. Best Dapper Selassie -- Dapper
:10:21. > :10:33.. This is a solid performance from Gabius and he has overhauled Richard
:10:34. > :10:40.Goodman who will come in in sixth place. Gabius looks a little
:10:41. > :10:44.distressed as he crosses the line. Richard Goodman has beaten some good
:10:45. > :10:47.athletes today and running 10k on the road is something he would not
:10:48. > :10:58.normally do but well done to him, just under 30 minutes.
:10:59. > :11:04.What a treat we have had this morning watching Tirunesh Dibaba
:11:05. > :11:07.take the women's race on her comeback and Kenenisa Bekele the
:11:08. > :11:14.men's race, both beautiful runners. And a lot of -- a lovely gesture
:11:15. > :11:19.from Wilson Kipsang as they crossed the line, that he is the number one,
:11:20. > :11:23.Bekele. This will be full of people in the not too distant future and
:11:24. > :11:28.there is a milestone today for the Great Manchester Run. The 300,000th
:11:29. > :11:36.finisher will cross the line and there is also a milestone next year.
:11:37. > :11:38.There will also be a half marathon as well and this is what the course
:11:39. > :12:52.will be like. confirmation of the men's result.
:12:53. > :12:59.Strong running from Kenenisa Bekele. Richard Goodman was the first
:13:00. > :13:01.British athlete. Tirunesh Dibaba, great to see her back and very
:13:02. > :13:12.encouraging performance. Nukuri ran well for third place and
:13:13. > :13:21.Gemma Steel was the first British athlete. The earlier starters this
:13:22. > :13:24.morning were the wheelchair racers. It was a fourth victory for Simon
:13:25. > :13:29.Lawson, a long way clear of Brett Crossley. Shelly Woods and Jade
:13:30. > :13:31.Jones had a very good race but Shelly Woods defended her title,
:13:32. > :13:45.also a fourth title for her. Not just a 10k next year but a half
:13:46. > :13:50.marathon as well. Entries are open as of 12 minutes ago so you can get
:13:51. > :13:55.it online if you want to enter. There is still so much more to come
:13:56. > :13:59.this afternoon after the elite races have finished. It was fantastic to
:14:00. > :14:04.be chosen as part of the team of Anthony Crolla. Being from
:14:05. > :14:10.Manchester as well, it is good to be part of his team. When things do get
:14:11. > :14:17.tough, I tend to look up and think my mum. All you have to do is start
:14:18. > :14:25.walking, then you can start jogging and then running. That is the way
:14:26. > :14:29.forward. She was born with a birth defect so we were rushed to
:14:30. > :14:36.Manchester and we saw a consultant who performed life-saving surgery.
:14:37. > :14:42.It is not just a day of support here and it be a whole with the City
:14:43. > :14:46.Games on Friday evening, Greg Rutherford looked particularly good
:14:47. > :14:47.in the long jump. And yesterday at the Etihad Stadium, it was the mini
:14:48. > :15:13.run. It's great, the kids are getting
:15:14. > :15:17.moving. But not sat at home in front of laptops, they are having a run
:15:18. > :15:20.and a really good time, even in the rain, good old Manchester! It is so
:15:21. > :15:26.nice to see so many kids getting active.
:15:27. > :15:45.My favourite bit was in the race, it was my first-ever medal. It was the
:15:46. > :15:50.best day ever! I had so much fun! She had a great time, she is only
:15:51. > :15:59.three, it was her first run and she really enjoyed it. He has just
:16:00. > :16:05.finished the race and we are really proud of him. You beat daddy! Idea
:16:06. > :16:19.to! -- I did! proud of him. You beat daddy! Idea
:16:20. > :16:31.am running the Great running for the hospital, I am
:16:32. > :16:36.hoping to do it within 50 minutes tomorrow, famous last words. We
:16:37. > :16:44.hoping to do it within 50 minutes see. I have had the best day ever!
:16:45. > :16:51.CHEERING As you see in the DT, it is raising
:16:52. > :17:01.money for the helipad at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. How
:17:02. > :17:07.are you feeling? -- in the report. It is such a beautiful atmosphere,
:17:08. > :17:12.it is amazing. Today is really important to you, to have that
:17:13. > :17:16.helicopter pad in Manchester, tell me how much it means to you.
:17:17. > :17:22.helicopter pad in Manchester, tell doing it for a good cause and I want
:17:23. > :17:28.to be here for everyone. Right on cue! He is absolutely
:17:29. > :17:32.to be here for everyone. Right on is so important that we have this
:17:33. > :17:37.here in Manchester. How will it feel when you are amongst these people
:17:38. > :17:50.and you are running for this doorman. I really wanted to do this
:17:51. > :17:54.-- for this little man. It is amazing and to get to the finish
:17:55. > :17:55.-- for this little man. It is line, it would be like a dream come
:17:56. > :18:00.true. How much help as you line, it would be like a dream come
:18:01. > :18:06.your husband, they have been with me through the training and Little
:18:07. > :18:09.Jeremiah as well. Just to see them all the time. We wish you the best
:18:10. > :18:28.of luck. So many still waiting there to get
:18:29. > :18:35.out on the streets. I said earlier on it is a massive logistical
:18:36. > :18:43.operation. It works like clockwork and it is crowded down at the start
:18:44. > :18:47.line, we are here at Deansgate, welcoming the athletes who are
:18:48. > :18:52.running pretty good Times, 38 minutes about to go through on the
:18:53. > :19:01.clock. From the first of the Mass starters. The orange ones are the
:19:02. > :19:06.quick ones. They are coming through in waves. A huge number of runners,
:19:07. > :19:12.close to 40,000 last year, not sure of the fact numbers this year. They
:19:13. > :19:16.will file down, the whole course moving out towards Old Trafford and
:19:17. > :19:21.then it comes back towards the city centre at the top of your picture, a
:19:22. > :19:28.bit of a breeze on the way back, coming in from the West. Good, broad
:19:29. > :19:34.roads and on they come. They continue to warm up at the behest of
:19:35. > :19:39.the organisers. It is a long wait and it is hemmed in, you do your
:19:40. > :19:45.warm up and then you are hemmed in, you jump up and down and do some
:19:46. > :19:51.gentle aerobics, stretching. It looks fantastic. I would be tired
:19:52. > :20:00.after that. I would be annoyed, I am not very good at arm waving. It
:20:01. > :20:05.might be some sort of record for the biggest keep fit class. Don't even
:20:06. > :20:21.suggest it, I am sure there is a record out there for that sort of
:20:22. > :20:32.thing. Zumba. You would know! It won't be long to go. If you were
:20:33. > :20:36.watching a bit earlier at the start, I was speaking to Anthony Crolla,
:20:37. > :20:41.the WBA lightweight champion, a real superstar in Manchester. He recently
:20:42. > :20:46.retained his title. He has been mentoring a group of people,
:20:47. > :20:54.Crolla's Army, he is quite a man and they are quite a group of people.
:20:55. > :21:01.There are two pictures, there is a bigger contrast, that is my last day
:21:02. > :21:06.of chemotherapy. At The Christie. The one that my daughter is holding,
:21:07. > :21:11.that was taken recently, asked together as a family. This
:21:12. > :21:21.represents the reasons why I am running. -- this is us together as a
:21:22. > :21:29.family. This is the helipad we want to have on the site. We do not have
:21:30. > :21:34.one of these and we are the biggest in the UK. My sister was diagnosed
:21:35. > :21:40.with autism two years ago. I am running for autism research. It was
:21:41. > :21:47.fantastic to be chosen as part of the team with Anthony Crolla. He is
:21:48. > :21:53.a great person, when I met him I realised he is really nice. This is
:21:54. > :21:59.a picture of my husband and I am running the Great Manchester Run in
:22:00. > :22:06.his memory. He was a world champion Thai boxer, he was passionate about
:22:07. > :22:15.sport and exercise and it seems fitting. My two daughters inspire me
:22:16. > :22:23.to do well. I want them to be proud. They or any proud of me for doing
:22:24. > :22:29.that. -- they are really proud of me for doing that. This is a picture of
:22:30. > :22:34.me and my daughter and granddaughter watching my son running. I was 19
:22:35. > :22:40.stone, I remember putting a pound in the charity box but spending ?10 in
:22:41. > :22:45.the burger van. To see these people who were running for their family
:22:46. > :22:57.and friends, it just made me feel so selfish. This is my cousin who was
:22:58. > :23:00.born with PKU, you need to have a low protein diet or it can cause
:23:01. > :23:08.brain damage and learning difficulties. This picture is very
:23:09. > :23:14.important to me, it was presented to me at a boxing tournament after a
:23:15. > :23:21.show where I boxed on. I am proud to be running with him on Sunday. I am
:23:22. > :23:27.really looking forward to it. I had gone on a holiday of a lifetime to
:23:28. > :23:31.Australia and I always wanted to go on a Scooby Doo ride. I got on it
:23:32. > :23:37.and before it went off, the alarm went off to save can the big lady
:23:38. > :23:45.get off. I had to get off in front of everybody, it was so humiliating,
:23:46. > :23:56.it was unbelievable. It is not everyday you get world champion
:23:57. > :24:02.boxer training you. I am used to fighting, but now the running is my
:24:03. > :24:09.first sport. There were a few people who had done a bit, I was nervous.
:24:10. > :24:14.It was really good. I had seen Anthony before on TV and being from
:24:15. > :24:23.Manchester as well, it is good to be part of his team. It was fantastic,
:24:24. > :24:29.it felt so good. I tried to put some power in. I am sure that he smiled
:24:30. > :24:35.at one point, it would be terrible to hit him in the face and get it
:24:36. > :24:42.really wrong! When I am short of breath, I think of her and I keep it
:24:43. > :24:47.going. The Christie, it means everything to me today, they say
:24:48. > :24:52.that my life and you want to repay them in the best way you can. It
:24:53. > :25:00.would feel like I would have crossed a barrier in the grief journey. It
:25:01. > :25:04.will be the start of a new life with my husband still beside me but in a
:25:05. > :25:12.different way. That is how I feel about it. A lovely group of people
:25:13. > :25:17.and Anthony Crolla has done a great job with them. We will be speaking
:25:18. > :25:22.to him later on. The finishes are streaming across the line, pretty
:25:23. > :25:30.decent times. Phil Jones took a short cut and he is with one of the
:25:31. > :25:35.proper finishes. I am with actor George Raynsford. You put the rest
:25:36. > :25:40.of the celebrities to shame with that kind of time, how pleased are
:25:41. > :25:46.you? I was really pleased. I stopped taking my watch with me. If you do
:25:47. > :25:51.not make your time and your miles, it doesn't motivate you. It was a
:25:52. > :25:57.pleasant surprise, I just went for it. How good are the conditions?
:25:58. > :26:04.Perfect. Good weather for the support to come out, not too sunny,
:26:05. > :26:12.everyone got some Burton last year. -- got sunburnt. I run for Blood
:26:13. > :26:25.Wise, formally leukaemia and lymphoma research. We are raising
:26:26. > :26:36.awareness and funds to help bat. -- to help that. Thanks. It is a
:26:37. > :26:41.beautiful day today. It is almost a bit warm. It is a privilege to see
:26:42. > :26:49.the runners go past me. Each one has an incredible story to tell. This is
:26:50. > :26:54.my run. A few years ago my weight had got out of control, I was eating
:26:55. > :27:00.anything and everything and I was 23.5 stone and I needed to do
:27:01. > :27:05.something about it. It is a big challenge. People ask me to do
:27:06. > :27:11.things, being lazy, I did not want to do anything, sitting around,
:27:12. > :27:14.eating. Confidence wise, speaking to friends and seeing them wearing the
:27:15. > :27:19.clothes you want to wear, do no you will not look as good as them,
:27:20. > :27:23.speaking to different people on a daily basis, it is not a nice
:27:24. > :27:28.feeling. I was watching all these athletes running on the TV and they
:27:29. > :27:32.were running the touch a long time and mentally it challenges you. You
:27:33. > :27:38.think you cannot do it and the word I cannot get stuck in your head. I
:27:39. > :27:43.went to the gymnasium one day and I was enjoying it. I saw progress and
:27:44. > :27:48.the weight dropping off, my jeans size were going lower, the T-shirt
:27:49. > :27:56.sizes were getting smaller, then I was 8.5 stone lighter. For what I
:27:57. > :28:01.have achieved, I am really proud, the journey continues, it does not
:28:02. > :28:05.ever end. I am proud inside. I am talking to you people, I am
:28:06. > :28:14.introducing myself, I am engaging with people, I am happy, the
:28:15. > :28:18.confidence is sky high. I am running for Cancer research, my auntie
:28:19. > :28:22.passed away recently and a friend at work has finished her chemotherapy.
:28:23. > :28:27.I know suffering from these diseases is terrible and I'm running this for
:28:28. > :28:32.them. If you watching this interview, I made it this far, I am
:28:33. > :28:36.doing the ten Kate, if I can do it, anyone can. Start walking, then you
:28:37. > :28:38.can start jogging, then you can start running, that is the way
:28:39. > :28:50.forward. That is certainly a bit of a
:28:51. > :28:57.transformation. All British athletes are getting ready for Rio, hopefully
:28:58. > :29:05.to be selected. We have a student here at magistrates University and
:29:06. > :29:09.she has taken some training out -- at Manchester United and she has
:29:10. > :29:10.taken some time out of training to inspire people to get involved in
:29:11. > :29:22.the Great Manchester Run. I tried to encourage everyone to get
:29:23. > :29:26.involved. It is always a great event, a great turnout, it is
:29:27. > :29:31.exciting that the University are putting so many people into the run.
:29:32. > :29:36.I first heard about it and I thought we will get 100 if we are lucky and
:29:37. > :29:41.then when they exceeded 1000, that is fantastic and they are all
:29:42. > :29:46.starting to gather! It is a great way to get people up and out, people
:29:47. > :29:59.who would not normally run a ten Kate, but raising money for charity.
:30:00. > :30:12.-- ten kilometres. We are raising money for the Red Cross and marry
:30:13. > :30:20.Kiri Cancer research. -- Marie Curie. I am witty confidence in my
:30:21. > :30:26.abilities. I have good injuries. Temple that it should not be a
:30:27. > :30:36.problem for me. -- ten: matters should not be a problem for me.
:30:37. > :30:41.Sport is a really important part of life and you can gain new friends
:30:42. > :30:46.and get a sense of achievement but also raised money for charity so it
:30:47. > :30:51.should be a really nice, positive event. I wish them the best of luck,
:30:52. > :30:55.it does not matter how long it takes, enjoy the moment and do a lot
:30:56. > :31:00.of good for yourselves and the University and those great
:31:01. > :31:07.charities. I am with the Manchester University runners. They have put
:31:08. > :31:09.charities. I am with the Manchester together a fantastic campaign to get
:31:10. > :31:18.loads of people from the University running. Tell me about it. Myself
:31:19. > :31:23.and one of our colleagues had the idea to do something to link into
:31:24. > :31:27.this event, to really capture the imagination and get the university
:31:28. > :31:36.together. We said the target of 1000 the book between 1000 people --
:31:37. > :31:38.between staff and students. There are 1100 members of
:31:39. > :31:42.between staff and students. There students. You are the general
:31:43. > :31:48.secretary of the students union. Tell me how you got involved. Were
:31:49. > :31:53.you always in the running? This is my first ever run! I'm a bit
:31:54. > :31:56.petrified. We got told about it and thought everybody should get
:31:57. > :32:01.involved. We wanted to push people who had never run before to do
:32:02. > :32:07.something new and bring the fun and atmosphere of exercise. What has the
:32:08. > :32:11.impact been like at the University? It's been incredible. Everybody is
:32:12. > :32:18.at our campus and there is like a thousand people all getting ready!
:32:19. > :32:23.It's a great buzz. This unexpected -- I'm expecting a massive social.
:32:24. > :32:28.And we have asked everybody to raise ?100 so we're hoping to raise
:32:29. > :32:36.?100,000 collectively. I wish you the best of luck today, good luck.
:32:37. > :32:42.And they are at the start line ready to go. There must be some sort of
:32:43. > :32:48.world record for the biggest group of runners, those purple shirt
:32:49. > :32:55.streaming through. 1100 in total. That is the record for biggest group
:32:56. > :33:00.from one place. -- that must be a record. We're going to look back at
:33:01. > :33:07.some of the elite races starting with the wheelchairs and Andrew
:33:08. > :33:13.Cotter. In the men's race, the man in front at the very start really
:33:14. > :33:17.dominated things, Simon Lawson. He did not have much competition, he
:33:18. > :33:22.had a good race with David Weir last year but he is not raising this year
:33:23. > :33:27.so it was left to Simon Lawson for just about the whole race. The
:33:28. > :33:31.women's race was far closer between Shelly Woods on the right and Jade
:33:32. > :33:37.Jones. They've had a close race until the final to take. For Simon
:33:38. > :33:45.Lawson, he was out on his own in a quick time, just outside the course
:33:46. > :33:49.record of David US. -- David Weir. And it was a good time as well for
:33:50. > :33:51.Shelly Woods who took the fourth title.
:33:52. > :33:58.I know this is a familiar for you both. Four wins apiece in
:33:59. > :34:02.Manchester, what is it about the race you like so much? It's a
:34:03. > :34:09.brilliant atmosphere. I love coming back here to race. The course is
:34:10. > :34:15.quick as well, a bit bumpy but it's good and good fun. Simon, a trouble
:34:16. > :34:21.free run for you? Yes, the really good race, nice weather and no wind,
:34:22. > :34:26.better than the rain yesterday! It must be a relief when you wake up
:34:27. > :34:30.and you see the sun peeping through because it was a bit wet earlier but
:34:31. > :34:36.perfect concessions. Really good conditions for a good time. Not too
:34:37. > :34:39.windy going out and nice coming back. I was really pleased with my
:34:40. > :34:44.race. I was pushed well by Jade back. I was really pleased with my
:34:45. > :34:51.pretty much all the way and managed to get away in the last 3k. I kept
:34:52. > :34:55.going and didn't look back. I was a bit worried because my wheel was
:34:56. > :35:01.coming loose! I thought if I don't go, she is going to do me. I was
:35:02. > :35:08.pleased to get one over on her. Simon, what do you take out a race
:35:09. > :35:13.like today in a big Paralympic year? So many athletes are jockeying for
:35:14. > :35:17.position, or is it do for you and your confidence? It is a good boost.
:35:18. > :35:19.position, or is it do for you and I was just chasing my time today
:35:20. > :35:27.because I was out front so I was trying to get a PB for this cause
:35:28. > :35:31.which I did so that puts me in good stead for Rio. Congratulations to
:35:32. > :35:36.you both. Hopefully we will see you trying for another five next year.
:35:37. > :35:43.Yes, and maybe the Great North Run later in the year. Thank you for
:35:44. > :35:48.talking to us. Strong performances from Shelly Woods and Simon Lawson.
:35:49. > :35:54.And in the men's and women's elite races that we were in the real treat
:35:55. > :36:01.with two of the greatest distance runners of all time. Steve Cram had
:36:02. > :36:03.the story. And those names came into the run with contrasting
:36:04. > :36:10.preparations. Tirunesh Dibaba has not raced since 2014 when she was
:36:11. > :36:14.last here in Manchester. Now a proud mum and this was a real indicator
:36:15. > :36:20.for her as to where her comeback was. Could she make the team for Rio
:36:21. > :36:23.and defend her Olympic title? She got some answers against a pretty
:36:24. > :36:30.good field. Gemma Field was trying to hang on as the best of the
:36:31. > :36:37.British athletes. -- Gemma Steel. Dibaba showed she is not far from
:36:38. > :36:46.the best, winning in a good time of 31.16. Kiplagat was second and Diane
:36:47. > :36:50.Nukuri was third. For Kenenisa Bekele, he had already cemented his
:36:51. > :36:55.place in Rio with the London Marathon, or Sony hoped because the
:36:56. > :37:00.selectors had only picked him as a reserve so he wanted to give them a
:37:01. > :37:05.reminder as to why they might want him in the team. He looked good and
:37:06. > :37:08.strong and was up against Wilson Kipsang, the former world
:37:09. > :37:13.record-holder for the marathon, for much of the race. But when it came
:37:14. > :37:17.down to his forte, the finish, he did not leave it to a sprint, he
:37:18. > :37:21.pulled away with one kilometre to go and he looked strong and the crowd
:37:22. > :37:27.were delighted to see one of the great champions of the sport coming
:37:28. > :37:33.out on top in 28.08 ahead of Kipsang and McNeil of Australia.
:37:34. > :37:42.And I have Kenenisa and Tirunesh with me. A great run. You looked
:37:43. > :37:47.very happy crossing the line. Yes because after three weeks after
:37:48. > :37:56.London Marathon I run here and I was so happy to come back after two
:37:57. > :38:04.years. I'm very happy to be here with a big crowd here. People here
:38:05. > :38:09.come all the time great people. They love sport and I'm happy to be here.
:38:10. > :38:15.In terms of selection for Rio, you must be disappointed, was this a
:38:16. > :38:20.message to the selectors? Not really, I showed them already
:38:21. > :38:28.before. I don't know why, you know. Of course I'm not happy about it.
:38:29. > :38:35.Maybe they have to select me as a third person. Fingers crossed we
:38:36. > :38:38.will see you in Rio. Tirunesh, you will be speaking through the
:38:39. > :38:49.interpreter, how happy were you with your comeback race?
:38:50. > :38:57.I'm so happy that I have won this race. I was trying to test myself
:38:58. > :39:04.with this Great Manchester Run and it has proved to be very good for
:39:05. > :39:09.me. Will we see you in Rio? I'm going to try the 10000 and hopefully
:39:10. > :39:10.I will make the team. You are both brilliant, thank you very much and
:39:11. > :39:25.we hope to see you both in Rio. Great to see
:39:26. > :39:30.performing well will stop two runs which were contrasting Internet of
:39:31. > :39:35.what they mean but Bekele will hope to be in Rio and we all hope that
:39:36. > :39:41.Tirunesh can get on the track and produce the sorts of times that the
:39:42. > :39:45.selectors cannot ignore. The waves continue. And to mention one group
:39:46. > :40:00.taking part, running in memory of Darren Hibbert. He passed away
:40:01. > :40:02.suddenly on New Year's Day and they would have been his birthday so
:40:03. > :40:12.poignant date for those running in his memory. It is a long wait for a
:40:13. > :40:16.lot of the athletes on Broughton Street but they are continuing to
:40:17. > :40:23.come through. The blue wave is getting underway. A long road ahead
:40:24. > :40:29.of them, the big loop out to Old Trafford and back. The next wave is
:40:30. > :40:34.a bit further down Portland Street. Somewhere between 30 and 40,000
:40:35. > :40:39.runners today. They all have their goals and ambitions. This is the
:40:40. > :40:42.orange wave charging down Deansgate. They will be looking to go under an
:40:43. > :40:48.hour. How much do you want it? They will be looking to go under an
:40:49. > :40:55.much have you got left? Not very much! So many people running for
:40:56. > :41:00.charities and also for their own ambitions and targets. Perhaps they
:41:01. > :41:05.have not run a 10k race at all, perhaps they were not running at all
:41:06. > :41:15.and decided to give it a go. They go out and come back down Chester Road.
:41:16. > :41:19.They will be going for some time to come, I think the last starters go
:41:20. > :41:26.out at about quarter past one so they will be running for some time
:41:27. > :41:31.yet. We saw one of our old pals, Iwan Thomas, before the start. I
:41:32. > :41:36.wonder how he got on. He is with Phil.
:41:37. > :41:44.UN has finished and he is in one piece, how was it? You are saying
:41:45. > :41:50.1-piece! I feel in about ten! It was tough, hot, it is normally colder
:41:51. > :41:55.here. But the people of Manchester, the crowds were amazing and so
:41:56. > :42:00.worthy fellow runners. I went off to fast as always. I was in a bit of
:42:01. > :42:04.pain but the people drags me around. It was a slow time but I'm so proud
:42:05. > :42:08.of everybody who ran. Everybody runs for their own reasons, for
:42:09. > :42:13.charities, for lost loved ones, and people think they might not be fit
:42:14. > :42:16.enough to do an event like this but you can. You can get off the sofa
:42:17. > :42:21.and do some running because it doesn't matter about your shape and
:42:22. > :42:25.size. It is a great event. You were out there with your selfie stick, we
:42:26. > :42:31.talked before the race about the live stream, how did that go?
:42:32. > :42:34.Unfortunately, something went wrong at the beginning! I have recorded
:42:35. > :42:40.the whole thing but I am not sure how much went out live because there
:42:41. > :42:45.was a mouth action -- malfunction. I was speaking to the camera for 47
:42:46. > :42:49.minutes for no reason! People were looking at me a bit strange but I
:42:50. > :42:54.was talking to the camera, not myself! Congratulations. We will
:42:55. > :42:58.hopefully do the streaming thing and it will work next time! Hopefully I
:42:59. > :43:06.won't be a mechanical moron next time! Just to echo the sentiments of
:43:07. > :43:11.Iwan Thomas, there is an amazing atmosphere, lots of music and
:43:12. > :43:15.thousands still streaming through but for many people it is an
:43:16. > :43:21.intense, personal, reflective experience. This is Amanda's story.
:43:22. > :43:26.My name is Amanda Scott and this is my run.
:43:27. > :43:36.I started my running journey in 2009 after my diagnosis of Crohn's
:43:37. > :43:42.disease which resulted in surgery. I ended up in coronary care and six
:43:43. > :43:47.months after coming out I decided that I was going to run the London
:43:48. > :43:52.Marathon. Running benefits my Crohn's disease because it aids a
:43:53. > :43:58.better digestive flow through the whole system that I have left and it
:43:59. > :44:04.also helps with my fatigue and my pain, massively. I have managed to
:44:05. > :44:11.reduce my dependence on morphine and terminal and also helps with Mike
:44:12. > :44:17.chronic fatigue -- tramadol. It helps me to keep a positive outlook
:44:18. > :44:19.on life, helping with the psychological side of the disease
:44:20. > :44:24.because it can be quite debilitating. I feel anything is
:44:25. > :44:31.possible when I go out for a run and when I do my traces it is the little
:44:32. > :44:39.achievement that count for me. -- races. When I'm running, I tend to
:44:40. > :44:46.think of my mum, Leona, who was my best friend and my biggest
:44:47. > :44:50.inspiration. She worked while I was in full-time chemotherapy, she
:44:51. > :44:54.fought with me and she was there in every single surgery I had. Not
:44:55. > :45:04.having her here has been the hardest point in my life. You can never hear
:45:05. > :45:07.her say, I love you, again. When things do get tough, I tend to look
:45:08. > :45:18.up and think of my mum. I things do get tough, I tend to look
:45:19. > :45:24.make my mum proud. Life can be so tough sometimes and it never ceases
:45:25. > :45:27.to amaze me, the inner resources that people find, the inspirational
:45:28. > :45:31.story of Amanda who is out on the course today. Thousands out on the
:45:32. > :45:38.course. Phil Jones has found another finisher. What a performance from
:45:39. > :45:48.Lindsey Russell. I tell you what, barely a bead of sweat on new!
:45:49. > :45:56.I thought I would come out here and give it a go. It has been brilliant.
:45:57. > :46:09.I see you are proudly wearing your blue Peter badge. It has gone wonky!
:46:10. > :46:18.Do you notice the cheers? We have launched our Rio 's 16 badge, it is
:46:19. > :46:25.nice to have the kids cheering. It is important to get the message out
:46:26. > :46:30.and get kids active. It is not about going fast, as I have shown today!
:46:31. > :46:37.Getting to the start line is that hardest thing, but it is not about
:46:38. > :46:42.anything other than that, give it a go and do your best. It is a great
:46:43. > :46:49.message, you are an inspiration. I am so tired! Anyone can take part in
:46:50. > :46:55.the Great Manchester Run, but there is an age limit, you have to be 15
:46:56. > :46:59.years old. I would guess one of the youngest people out there was
:47:00. > :47:01.Brooke, she turned 15 just a few days ago. We caught up with her at
:47:02. > :47:26.band practice. Brooke was born with a birth defect
:47:27. > :47:31.so we were rushed to Manchester to see a consultant there who operated
:47:32. > :47:39.on her when she was 11 days old for life-saving surgery. She has been in
:47:40. > :47:46.and out of hospital all her life. It is the norm for me, I am used to it.
:47:47. > :47:53.I take it as it comes. She had surgery about two years ago. I could
:47:54. > :47:59.not do sport the 12 months. Unfortunately it did not work. It
:48:00. > :48:04.went a bit wrong, I broke screws. Some of the pins that were holding
:48:05. > :48:10.everything together broke. I had it redial and, the 12 months got longer
:48:11. > :48:19.to about two years. Considering how old she is, it was very difficult
:48:20. > :48:25.for her. I used to do triathlons beforehand, so doing stuff like that
:48:26. > :48:29.to nothing has been quite hard. When she had the first knocked back on
:48:30. > :48:33.the surgery, she decided to do a thing on the Internet with her
:48:34. > :48:38.friends and it was called to the forbidden mile. She said to have
:48:39. > :48:45.friends, I cannot run a mile, but if you can, just do a mile and give a
:48:46. > :48:51.few pounds to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital. My mum did one,
:48:52. > :49:01.and then I thought I want to do the one my mum is doing. She is adamant
:49:02. > :49:05.she is doing it. This is her way of saying thank you to the raw magister
:49:06. > :49:12.Children's Hospital. It is a wonderful place to be. -- the Royal
:49:13. > :49:17.Manchester Children's Hospital. Mr Bruce will be coming round with me,
:49:18. > :49:24.he has been my surgeon since birth. He will be running with her on her
:49:25. > :49:33.first attempt at a 10K, it is fabulous. Music has not let me down.
:49:34. > :49:38.I could not do sport, but music has always been here. She has put her
:49:39. > :49:42.energy into music, she has channelled her energy in a different
:49:43. > :49:47.way from the sport that she has not been able to do. It is nice to do it
:49:48. > :49:52.with them, it is nice to have something to share together.
:49:53. > :50:01.CHEERING APPLAUSE
:50:02. > :50:05.I am here at the start line with a very colourful family. She stands
:50:06. > :50:13.out. We have just seen your report and what a brave soul you are. How
:50:14. > :50:17.excited are you? I am excited, but I cannot wait to have it over and done
:50:18. > :50:24.with. Your preparation must have been different. I cannot run, I have
:50:25. > :50:32.been walking everywhere and trying as hard as I can. You are really fit
:50:33. > :50:39.then? A little bit. On medical grounds, has says is it for her to
:50:40. > :50:43.be here today? It is a fantastic achievement, however we do it. It is
:50:44. > :50:49.a fantastic achievement. It is inspirational. For yourself, being
:50:50. > :50:56.here, have you done the preparation you need to do? For an athlete like
:50:57. > :51:01.myself... LAUGHTER It is quite a challenge. You have
:51:02. > :51:11.brought your family with you. Who is running with you? Jim is running,
:51:12. > :51:20.Katie, my dad and my mum are running. I hear she is a bit speedy,
:51:21. > :51:26.your mum. I am not sure! A proud moment for you. She always said she
:51:27. > :51:38.would run the magister tempeh and here she is. -- Manchester 10K.
:51:39. > :51:43.Wonderful to see you in all these bright colours. Good luck. Paula has
:51:44. > :51:49.come down from the commentary box to joining. I was just thinking about
:51:50. > :51:54.when you sit and commentate and watch a mass participation race like
:51:55. > :51:58.this, how does it make you feel. No one goes out and does a mass
:51:59. > :52:04.participation triple jump, how does it make you feel? You are part of a
:52:05. > :52:08.family of runners. Whether you are racing temporal matters or a
:52:09. > :52:14.marathon distance, you become part of the family. -- racing Hahn
:52:15. > :52:21.kilometres. Everyone will have gone through difficult points. That is
:52:22. > :52:27.what is great, the camaraderie and the sharing that you get out there.
:52:28. > :52:32.Just what ever problems we have, the athletics at the top level, that is
:52:33. > :52:35.not happening here, running is something special. It is bringing
:52:36. > :52:43.people together to make a big difference. What else amazes me is
:52:44. > :52:48.people run quite quickly. Yes, they run quickly and they are holding
:52:49. > :52:53.down full-time jobs. We had it easy as elite athletes, it is your
:52:54. > :52:56.full-time job to train. A lot of people have busy family lives,
:52:57. > :53:00.full-time jobs, fitting training around that and coming here and
:53:01. > :53:06.running personal best and running quick times. It is wonderful to see
:53:07. > :53:16.that Laois on. Let's talk about the men's and women's elite races. -- it
:53:17. > :53:20.is wonderful to see that. Tirunesh Dibaba is still a great distance
:53:21. > :53:25.runner. She maybe has a little bit to go. We talked about that in the
:53:26. > :53:28.commentary. The definition in her body is in quite there from the
:53:29. > :53:30.miles in the bank and all the training, but that will come
:53:31. > :53:34.quickly. The racing training, but that will come
:53:35. > :53:39.still there. She wanted to come out and run a reasonably quick time and
:53:40. > :53:43.dominate the race and win well and she did that. In terms of going to
:53:44. > :53:49.reopen and getting a third gold medal, is that beyond her? I would
:53:50. > :53:54.never say it is beyond her, it is tough, if she was British, she would
:53:55. > :54:01.probably be walking onto the team, but in Ethiopian there are a lot of
:54:02. > :54:07.strong women. It is not maybe as strong as the men's team, she could
:54:08. > :54:11.do it, but she needs to find a 10,000 metre race and then run quick
:54:12. > :54:19.enough to cement her place in there. A quick word on Kenenisa Bekele,
:54:20. > :54:22.none of the European is finished in 2012 in the marathon. They do not
:54:23. > :54:30.have a history strongest champion team to the team.
:54:31. > :54:35.They have named reserves and actually picked them later. It
:54:36. > :54:37.happened with Kenenisa Bekele in 2008, she was named as a reserve and
:54:38. > :54:42.then he did run on the team. He has 2008, she was named as a reserve and
:54:43. > :54:47.a good chance of running on the team, that is what he is racing
:54:48. > :54:51.towards. We would love to see him race on the track. It would be an
:54:52. > :54:55.interesting prospect against race on the track. It would be an
:54:56. > :55:00.Farah. With his injury problems, he does not want to risk racing on the
:55:01. > :55:07.track. Thank you for the moment. We will head back out to the finish
:55:08. > :55:18.with Phil Jones. Coronation Street always do the Great Manchester Run
:55:19. > :55:24.proud. How did you find it? It made me really proud to be part of
:55:25. > :55:29.Manchester. All the people who are cheering you on. It feels really
:55:30. > :55:35.good to be part of Manchester. Is it something you would recommend to
:55:36. > :55:41.people watching? Absolutely, if I can do it, anyone can. How did you
:55:42. > :55:45.find it physically today? I was exhausted, I can barely breathe, I
:55:46. > :55:52.need a lie down, but it was worth it. Have a lie down and have a
:55:53. > :55:56.drink. I would love to come again. Thanks.
:55:57. > :57:10.get out there and do a bit of running and join us here next year.
:57:11. > :57:15.The runners keep on starting and they keep on finishing here, but we
:57:16. > :57:18.are just about done on the BBC. Just time to tell you there is more sport
:57:19. > :57:39.coming up over the course of this afternoon.
:57:40. > :57:47.That is it from the Great Manchester Run. What a great celebration of
:57:48. > :57:51.sport it has been. We have seen two of the greats, Tirunesh Dibaba and
:57:52. > :57:56.Kenenisa Bekele showing that they have not lost any form. It is a half
:57:57. > :58:01.marathon next year, get your entries in and we will see you here.
:58:02. > :58:08.Goodbye. I always feel that anything is possible when I go out for a run.
:58:09. > :58:24.Mentally it challenges you. The word I can't is stuck in your head. If I
:58:25. > :58:45.can do it, anyone can. I run to make my mum proud.
:58:46. > :59:12.BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend is coming to your place,
:59:13. > :59:15.with Mumford And Sons, Ellie Goulding,
