:00:12. > :00:28.Six days ago people went to a concert. 22 people, none of whom,

:00:29. > :00:34.would return home. Almost a week on from the attack,

:00:35. > :00:38.the heart of the city may have been broken but defiantly its spirit

:00:39. > :00:47.hasn't. The whole country, the whole world has been incredibly moved and

:00:48. > :00:51.hoping that the people of Manchester come together, united and strong.

:00:52. > :00:55.Hello and welcome to this proud and passionate city where thousands of

:00:56. > :00:59.runners, despite what has happened, take to the streets as part of the

:01:00. > :01:06.Great Manchester Run. Those words spoken so memorably by

:01:07. > :01:13.Tony Walsh will no doubt be carried by all around. This is the place, in

:01:14. > :01:19.the north-west of England, it ace, it's in the songs that we sing, from

:01:20. > :01:26.the bands in our bandstand, the whole planet shaking. Our inventions

:01:27. > :01:31.our legends. They make brilliant bands, we make goals that make souls

:01:32. > :01:36.leap from the stands. We make things from steel, and we make things from

:01:37. > :01:40.cotton, we make people laugh, and we make you feel whole, we make you

:01:41. > :01:43.feel welcome, we make something happen, we cannot seem to help it.

:01:44. > :01:52.And if you're looking for history then yes, we have a wealth. But the

:01:53. > :01:57.Manchester way is to make it yourself. And this is the place

:01:58. > :02:02.where we first played as kids. And this is the place where our folks

:02:03. > :02:07.came to work where they struggled in puddles. They hurt in the dirt. And

:02:08. > :02:12.they built us a city. They built us these towns. So this is the place

:02:13. > :02:17.now with kids of our own, some are born here, some drawn here. But we

:02:18. > :02:20.all call it home. And they've covered the cobbles but they'll

:02:21. > :02:24.never defeat all of the dreamers and schemers who still team through the

:02:25. > :02:28.streets. Because this is a place that has been through some hard

:02:29. > :02:32.times. Oppression, recession, depression and dark times. But we

:02:33. > :02:37.keep fighting back with the Manchester spirit. The northern

:02:38. > :02:39.greats. Manchester lyrics in these hard times...

:02:40. > :02:44.CHEERING In the streets of our city. But we

:02:45. > :02:47.won't take defeat. And we don't want your pity because this is the place

:02:48. > :02:52.where we stand strong together with a smile on our face. Mancunians

:02:53. > :02:57.forever. Because this is the place in our hearts, in our homes, because

:02:58. > :03:02.this is the place that a part of our bones. Because Manchester gives us

:03:03. > :03:09.such strength from the fact that this... Is the place.

:03:10. > :03:21.CHEERING We should give something back.

:03:22. > :03:22.Always remember, never forget, forever Manchester. Choose love,

:03:23. > :04:13.Manchester, thank you. Welcome to Manchester, everybody. A

:04:14. > :04:19.city that has been in the hearts and minds of all of us this week. And a

:04:20. > :04:24.place that today very much plans on showing everybody just what it is

:04:25. > :04:29.made of. I can tell you that the weather is almost perfect for a run

:04:30. > :04:33.today. It's cloudy, it's cool. With a risk of drizzle. It wouldn't be

:04:34. > :04:37.Manchester without it. But rain or shine the city is always going to be

:04:38. > :04:41.united today. And unity has definitely been the theme of this

:04:42. > :04:45.week. That poem you heard of the top of the programme resonated with so

:04:46. > :04:53.many people. The man behind those words, the words, when no one else

:04:54. > :04:56.had words, was Toby Walsh. Good morning to you. You have had the

:04:57. > :05:03.most unbelievable week. Overwhelming the response. Cloudy and cool.

:05:04. > :05:07.That's Manchester. Trying to show that. Many overwhelming things have

:05:08. > :05:12.happened this week. Many overwhelming things have happened to

:05:13. > :05:17.those families. Our thoughts are with them. That poem struck a chord.

:05:18. > :05:21.It has been around the world. An amazing and moving reaction in

:05:22. > :05:25.Manchester. It has given the city something to galvanise behind and it

:05:26. > :05:29.shows the spirit of the place. So many people will be thankful for it.

:05:30. > :05:37.People just beyond where you could see. Though that reaction was raw,

:05:38. > :05:43.today is a reaction, isn't it? Absolutely. Some young girls took it

:05:44. > :05:48.on themselves to pick up litter. There were young women in Saint Anne

:05:49. > :05:55.'s Square giving free hugs to people who had nobody. I have seen signs

:05:56. > :05:59.saying free food. There were taxi drivers taking people home for free.

:06:00. > :06:03.There are people offering cups of tea for free. That's the real

:06:04. > :06:08.Manchester. You know this place. This is the place you call home.

:06:09. > :06:12.There is such a strong identity. People are so proud to come from

:06:13. > :06:16.here. A lot of this was basic human decency. It would have happened

:06:17. > :06:19.anywhere. But we like to think there is a spirit here coming from our

:06:20. > :06:23.history and community. We are galvanised in showing that this

:06:24. > :06:27.week. There was no doubt people would come out in their droves

:06:28. > :06:32.today. They are here. And you have another job today to do, haven't

:06:33. > :06:38.you? Yes, I wrote a poem to the run a couple of years ago. -- yes, I

:06:39. > :06:44.wrote a poem for the run a couple of years ago. I will perform it to the

:06:45. > :06:48.crowd today. It is a privilege. Agree to speak to you. Today will be

:06:49. > :06:55.special. For everybody who has used your guidance, thank you. Choose

:06:56. > :07:15.love is the message. We would like you to get involved. Details below.

:07:16. > :07:22.#runformanchester has had an amazing response. Louise MInchin has had an

:07:23. > :07:26.interesting week. She was here straight after those awful events on

:07:27. > :07:32.Monday night. She is here for the next few hours.

:07:33. > :07:36.We have both been together this morning to Saint and square. And

:07:37. > :07:43.what really struck me, being there, is that in this city still there are

:07:44. > :07:49.places of quiet contemplation where people are going to pay tribute and

:07:50. > :07:53.remember those victims. In contrast, just a couple of streets away I am

:07:54. > :08:00.surrounded by runners, people out on the streets, to lend their support.

:08:01. > :08:04.To stand up and be counted. They will make a difference today. The

:08:05. > :08:07.decision as to whether this run would go ahead was probably a tough

:08:08. > :08:14.one. Let's talk to a couple of guys in charge of that. Good morning. It

:08:15. > :08:18.is quite something to be standing here today. I have stood on the

:08:19. > :08:23.start line before. There is no fun excitement. Today a sense of

:08:24. > :08:28.determination. Yes. This is going to be a serious day today. Not a

:08:29. > :08:32.celebration, which it normally is. I think everybody will have the

:08:33. > :08:37.injured, the dead, their families in their thoughts. But everybody

:08:38. > :08:42.equally is coming out to say life in this city will go on as normal. We

:08:43. > :08:45.will continue. This is a fightback from the people of Manchester. And

:08:46. > :08:50.thousands of people from all over the country, as welcome who have

:08:51. > :08:58.come here today. Rendon, you felt compelled, this had to go ahead in

:08:59. > :09:01.some ways, didn't it? -- Brendan. Our request was all you in your

:09:02. > :09:10.hands. Richard then told me immediately that it was a case of if

:09:11. > :09:14.but how. We spent time with his team, police, emergency services, we

:09:15. > :09:19.spent the week wondering if we could go ahead. Here we are going ahead.

:09:20. > :09:26.We have had such fantastic leadership in this great city. If

:09:27. > :09:31.you look behind us the lead is only -- if you look behind us, the people

:09:32. > :09:35.of Manchester are next to them. It is amazing. As far as the eye can

:09:36. > :09:44.see Varane runners ready. We also had the city Games. -- as far as the

:09:45. > :09:48.eye can see we can see runners ready. People often stay away after

:09:49. > :09:53.something like this because there is fear. In this city people have been

:09:54. > :09:56.determined to conquer their fear and demonstrate their willingness to

:09:57. > :10:00.come out. On Friday night we had more people than ever to watch the

:10:01. > :10:05.city Games. Today Brendan was down at the finishing line for the

:10:06. > :10:10.children's run, the half marathon. The finish line is already packed

:10:11. > :10:16.out before this is even started. People absolutely determined to say

:10:17. > :10:23.a message of defiance, strength, and a message of being together, all

:10:24. > :10:29.ages, all races, all faiths. What else can we look out for? There is

:10:30. > :10:34.serious competition. Some of the greatest athletes, the greatest

:10:35. > :10:37.female athlete in history from Ethiopian, a world record holder,

:10:38. > :10:41.three times Olympic champion, she is on the start line. She said earlier

:10:42. > :10:47.that she does not speak great English and she said she is happy to

:10:48. > :10:55.be here in Manchester. Lots of messages from people around the

:10:56. > :11:02.world telling us thanks for going. Around the world people are looking

:11:03. > :11:06.to this. The leadership in Manchester, Richard and his team,

:11:07. > :11:12.have done an amazing job. We should all be proud of the leadership of

:11:13. > :11:17.the city but also behind us. Are you proud to be here today? Very proud

:11:18. > :11:22.to be here. Out of all of these people. The people lining the track,

:11:23. > :11:26.the people running, they do this city proud. Good luck to them all.

:11:27. > :11:32.Thank you for joining us. I know you have had an incredibly busy week.

:11:33. > :11:37.The elite athletes have come, thousands of other people are in the

:11:38. > :11:41.streets of Manchester to make their presence felt. It has really been

:11:42. > :11:44.buzzing here. The noise that has been browsing through the city of

:11:45. > :11:49.Manchester has been buzzing since the start of the morning. We have

:11:50. > :11:52.Denise Lewis and Jay charmers who will be speaking to those special

:11:53. > :11:57.people, every single one of them, for the duration of the programme.

:11:58. > :12:01.Over to you. We have been set the task of

:12:02. > :12:09.speaking to as many of these amazing runners as possible. This is your

:12:10. > :12:13.first time, isn't it? It is. What a special year to get to begin my

:12:14. > :12:19.journey. There is a really special energy in the air. It is defiance,

:12:20. > :12:24.it is strength, it is wonderful. Would you have your own personal

:12:25. > :12:29.account of living in an aftermath of such an atrocity? Six years ago

:12:30. > :12:40.today, I was in a coma, flying back from Afghanistan, I had been injured

:12:41. > :12:44.by an IED bomb blast. Sport helped me to recover. Mentally and

:12:45. > :12:48.physically. The best thing about days like today it reminds you that

:12:49. > :12:52.the best part of human strength is the ability to overcome adversity.

:12:53. > :12:56.That is what today is all about. You can feel the sense of the people

:12:57. > :12:59.overcoming the healing of this city. But also the individuals who will be

:13:00. > :13:03.looking to the crowd around to push them through the barrier. You know

:13:04. > :13:08.that better than anybody. Absolutely. It is about the people

:13:09. > :13:17.of Manchester. Unity and solidarity, defiance in the face of adversity.

:13:18. > :13:19.You are a great ambassador of that. It's a pleasure to speak to these

:13:20. > :13:23.people today. It's going to be fun. Back to you.

:13:24. > :13:30.We will be back to you shortly. Talking about special sporting

:13:31. > :13:34.occasions, these two have been in many. Just before you go off to do

:13:35. > :13:39.your own ten kilometres. I know it is nervous times for you, even

:13:40. > :13:42.though you have been in a cup final. I would like to point out that he is

:13:43. > :13:48.the one who has been in cup finals. I like that you are making are

:13:49. > :13:52.spread out to be sporting heroes, but he is the man. Many people will

:13:53. > :13:56.know that Manchester United were in Stockholm on Thursday for the

:13:57. > :14:03.regular league final. They won it. It was a special but emotional

:14:04. > :14:09.evening, wasn't it? Yes, everybody connected with United on the trip.

:14:10. > :14:13.They wanted a win for the city. Thankfully the lads put in a great

:14:14. > :14:19.performance. And deservedly won the trophy and dedicated it to everybody

:14:20. > :14:23.who lost their lives in Manchester. That is exactly what Manchester

:14:24. > :14:27.people are like. It's a great city. They pull together in adversity.

:14:28. > :14:31.Unfortunately these things happen throughout the world now. But

:14:32. > :14:36.thankfully United got into the Champions League and rewarded

:14:37. > :14:41.everybody. There is a feeling here today, as well, that people don't,

:14:42. > :14:47.people don't even have to talk about it today. There is a look and an

:14:48. > :14:52.acknowledgement of what has happened this week. And at the same time, a

:14:53. > :14:57.determination of everybody here to do this and do the city proud.

:14:58. > :15:02.Despite the sporting rivalry which splits this town into red and blue,

:15:03. > :15:03.there was a wonderful tweet sent out by Manchester City, earlier this

:15:04. > :15:12.week: Very simple and a lovely way of

:15:13. > :15:16.putting it. I was told today, the half marathon has already been run

:15:17. > :15:23.today, in the half marathon somebody told me they ran with a guy who had

:15:24. > :15:27.a city shirt on and a United scarf. That is what has happened. You have

:15:28. > :15:31.been in your fair share of rivalries. But it is a special

:15:32. > :15:32.place. Especially after something like that, this place comes

:15:33. > :15:41.together. This has been a growing event over

:15:42. > :15:46.the years and a fun day where everybody comes to enjoy themselves

:15:47. > :15:51.and participate for the different charities and. That is brilliant

:15:52. > :15:56.that people are coming out and hopefully everybody can just enjoy

:15:57. > :15:59.the day today. It was an emotional night in Stockholm, you are part of

:16:00. > :16:06.the coverage, and you talked about love and community, and stuff like

:16:07. > :16:16.that that unites cities. Yes, and I think lots of cities will feel the

:16:17. > :16:21.same as that happened in their city, leads: -- Leeds, Liverpool,

:16:22. > :16:23.Newcastle. Cities are built on friendships and communities and

:16:24. > :16:27.hopefully opportunities and Manchester is no different. As I

:16:28. > :16:31.said on Wednesday night and as Tony Wilson said, a huge great of this

:16:32. > :16:36.city, we just do things differently. You are both running for Manchester

:16:37. > :16:43.charities, the Christie Hospital and the Kirsty foundation. Yes, Kirsty's

:16:44. > :16:46.foundation has been going on for years and she's a wonderful girl so

:16:47. > :16:54.it is fantastic. Enjoy it, I'm sure you will. He was my Boyhood hero, I

:16:55. > :17:00.don't want to make him feel old! I can't stop smiling. We will enjoy

:17:01. > :17:04.this moment for as long as we can. This has been my home for many years

:17:05. > :17:10.and I'm sure these two will vouch for even after an atrocity like this

:17:11. > :17:16.on Monday night, nothing would break the people of Manchester. But at

:17:17. > :17:20.this. Events like the Great Manchester Run, it is important they

:17:21. > :17:23.are going ahead, people have been working towards this for months and

:17:24. > :17:30.it is an opportunity for people to come to Manchester and cheer

:17:31. > :17:35.everybody. Keep going, the -- pick ourselves up. We will stand together

:17:36. > :17:37.and keep going. I am immensely proud of Manchester and how people have

:17:38. > :17:42.rallied together to show their true spirit. All we want to have in

:17:43. > :17:47.Manchester is unity. People are not staying in their homes, they are not

:17:48. > :17:51.afraid to be two people in the streets, everybody has come together

:17:52. > :17:56.in a way that is really unique to Mancunians and Manchester. There is

:17:57. > :18:02.so much love in the city and there always will be. We are Manchester.

:18:03. > :18:12.We are Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester. I am

:18:13. > :18:16.here with Peter Hook, so many of you will remember him as the bass player

:18:17. > :18:21.in Joy Division and New Order. You are running today. I am running yes,

:18:22. > :18:33.I was looking forward to it until I got woken up this morning by Ocado

:18:34. > :18:37.and I did not even order it! Important to run today? Yes, my

:18:38. > :18:42.daughter was at the Arena on Monday and she luckily got out, fantastic.

:18:43. > :18:46.Importance to support people and the grieving families, it is terrible.

:18:47. > :18:51.You had a heart stopping moment any parent would have. The phone call

:18:52. > :18:56.coming yes. My wife took it. I have never seen her crumbling in that

:18:57. > :19:04.way. I was terrified, it really was awful. Has ceded you know she was

:19:05. > :19:09.OK? She was home before it came on the TV. Her boyfriend this in

:19:10. > :19:14.Chorlton and his mother picked her up and she got through and she was

:19:15. > :19:18.in the car and she got out and she was in our house at 20 past 11. You

:19:19. > :19:23.think she is back and safe but she has suffered all week, feeling

:19:24. > :19:29.dreadful. I was at the hospital with her on Thursday and she is

:19:30. > :19:33.suffering. She will not be alone in that. No, there is thousands and my

:19:34. > :19:38.heart bleeds for the people and the parents that had to go through that.

:19:39. > :19:43.It feels so personal, I have lived in the Northwest for five years and

:19:44. > :19:48.we all know somebody who was there and she used to waiting at foyer.

:19:49. > :19:54.Yes, a newsstand with the ticket touts, I was allowed to wait to go

:19:55. > :20:01.to pick them up until she was 15 -- I used to stand. One of them was

:20:02. > :20:04.really badly injured, I heard. To go down and see the support that St

:20:05. > :20:08.Ann's Square, it is important to stick together and fight and do our

:20:09. > :20:14.bit to make it easier and better for the people suffering. You have done

:20:15. > :20:20.this run for many years. This is my 11th. There is a sense of excitement

:20:21. > :20:24.and nerves and a real determination and poignancy. Yes, the people are

:20:25. > :20:28.here to show support for everybody and it is fantastic. We're here for

:20:29. > :20:32.charitable causes which is important, sadly we have to support

:20:33. > :20:36.them and I am delighted to do Christie is again because it really

:20:37. > :20:40.needs it. But we are here and we will do our best and hopefully try

:20:41. > :20:45.and make everybody feel a little bit better. They're always tears at the

:20:46. > :20:51.finish line and I suspect there will be more. Yes. Thank you, what time

:20:52. > :20:55.do you hope to do is to mark somewhere under one hour! I think

:20:56. > :20:59.you are being modest, thank you very much and have a very good run.

:21:00. > :21:05.Thousands of people are behind us and ready to go. He is getting

:21:06. > :21:11.nervous, you go. Denise is down there with the crowds. Great to see

:21:12. > :21:16.you, I saw you on Friday night at the CityGames and I know you are not

:21:17. > :21:20.running here, what are you doing here? Showing my support and I will

:21:21. > :21:24.start some races so it will be interesting being on the starting

:21:25. > :21:29.side and not the running site. You are here Friday, the atmosphere was

:21:30. > :21:33.just incredible, what you think it will be like today? Amazing,

:21:34. > :21:36.regardless, the fans are showing their support, everybody is here and

:21:37. > :21:41.it will happen and we are making sure we stand firm and be strong for

:21:42. > :21:45.Manchester. It was important the athletes came, they wanted to be

:21:46. > :21:48.competing on Friday. Yes, definitely and happy the crowd is supporting

:21:49. > :21:53.also because we do not want to be in the street by ourselves with nobody

:21:54. > :22:00.to support so happy they came and we will do our best. The atmosphere is

:22:01. > :22:03.incredible and everybody is looking forward to seeing you. Yes,

:22:04. > :22:08.definitely, it's great Manchester is doing such a great job. We love this

:22:09. > :22:15.event and I hope it will be here for many more years. It's great to see

:22:16. > :22:20.you, as always. Thank you. I am with ours, this is your third attempt, is

:22:21. > :22:23.there a different energy? Yes, definitely, quite emotional and

:22:24. > :22:29.everybody has got the Mancunian spirits drunk so looking forward to

:22:30. > :22:33.that. Thinking of the 22 and their grieving families and my city and

:22:34. > :22:40.how they have pulled together any part of you felt like not coming? A

:22:41. > :22:44.little bit, I was worried about my family supporting the tiny babies

:22:45. > :22:49.but I believe in our city and we are stronger together and we need to be

:22:50. > :22:57.here together. Good luck and make a family proud. We have a regular face

:22:58. > :23:01.of the Great Manchester Run, Anthony Crolla with your boxing crew, you

:23:02. > :23:05.are running with friends today. Monday night, you had a member of

:23:06. > :23:11.your family at the concert. She all right? Yes, she is OK. She is

:23:12. > :23:17.possibly one of the luckiest girls in the world. That night, she saw

:23:18. > :23:23.some things nobody should have to see, never mind is 17-year-old girl.

:23:24. > :23:27.As horrible as it sounds, seeing a body parts and being covered in

:23:28. > :23:34.human flesh. Some of that will never leave her but she is doing well, she

:23:35. > :23:39.is a tough girl. She does not sound lucky, but she was the luckiest girl

:23:40. > :23:43.in the world that night. Like so many thousands here today, carrying

:23:44. > :23:46.gone that spirit and you have done this run a number of times and like

:23:47. > :23:52.every year, I'm sure it has a new meaning. I say it every year that

:23:53. > :23:55.this run, this weekend is the greatest in the calendar year for

:23:56. > :24:00.Manchester and despite what happens on Monday night, I believe it will

:24:01. > :24:03.be bigger and better than ever this year and you can see the

:24:04. > :24:09.togetherness of the city and the response, amazing. It makes you feel

:24:10. > :24:13.like the proudest Mancunian there is. Scott, these guys champions here

:24:14. > :24:19.and it would not take much to convince you to run today. I picked

:24:20. > :24:23.the phone upside I will be part of -- I picked the phone up and I said

:24:24. > :24:30.I would definitely be part of the team. We are out here and the great

:24:31. > :24:34.of Manchester, everybody pulling together, so happy to be part of

:24:35. > :24:39.this and running back best. You are warming up, we will not keep you

:24:40. > :24:43.much longer. Any minute now, they will take to the streets of

:24:44. > :24:47.Manchester, look out for them, I'm sure they will be fast. But quickly,

:24:48. > :24:53.a lot of people remember a couple of years ago you in hospital fighting

:24:54. > :24:57.for your life and this race was part of your rehabilitation and it was

:24:58. > :25:01.important for you to be here as part of Manchester and big budget route.

:25:02. > :25:09.Guess, that is what I meant about being a proud Mancunian. -- and they

:25:10. > :25:13.pulled Jeet through it. I can't do too much running but I make sure

:25:14. > :25:19.every year by do this run and so many great causes people to run for

:25:20. > :25:23.and that is why the city supports it the way it does. Enjoy it, you do

:25:24. > :25:30.every year and that is why you keep coming back. So much installed by

:25:31. > :25:46.you, this is what is coming up. -- so much in that store for you.

:25:47. > :26:18.So many people here to do this race. This is John Bishop. You are not

:26:19. > :26:22.going to run a bolster no, I just had stitches out my leg yesterday,

:26:23. > :26:30.that was not an excuse, I have no training. Ayn Rand this race ten

:26:31. > :26:36.years ago and I have not done a 10k since but I wanted to be among this

:26:37. > :26:41.body of people -- I ran. It has affected throughout the North West,

:26:42. > :26:45.throughout the cities? Yes, and it has shown what we are about, it has

:26:46. > :26:52.brought people together. For me personally, it Manchester gave me a

:26:53. > :26:57.every thing I hold dear. At Kent University here, I lived here over

:26:58. > :27:00.20 years, and met my wife here, had children here, started stand-up

:27:01. > :27:05.comedy here. Another venue and I have played it a number of times and

:27:06. > :27:08.I will do in the autumn. Everybody can imagine themselves in this

:27:09. > :27:14.position and it is what we are about. There is more of is done them

:27:15. > :27:19.and we will not get beat, this is what we are about. You say more of

:27:20. > :27:24.us, look down that road, it is extraordinary. And every person I

:27:25. > :27:29.had that decision whether to come or not this morning and they have made

:27:30. > :27:34.that decision as an act of defiance that we are bigger than you and we

:27:35. > :27:39.will not change what is dear to us. Everybody here and the supporters

:27:40. > :27:44.standing up and being counted. Yes, and unity. You look down the line

:27:45. > :27:48.and there is every creed and every colour and every size. People here

:27:49. > :27:52.making a statement and that statement will resonate across the

:27:53. > :27:57.country. You said you have run it before but it will be different

:27:58. > :28:02.today in many ways? Yes, because I will probably walk it! John, there

:28:03. > :28:06.is no shame in walking. It is totally different. This is not about

:28:07. > :28:11.the race all your time, it is about being here and that is what

:28:12. > :28:15.everybody feels. Thank you so much and you are here because one of your

:28:16. > :28:21.concerts was cancelled? Yes, I postponed a couple on Tuesday and

:28:22. > :28:24.Wednesday, and we had a We Love Manchester won last night, me and

:28:25. > :28:34.Jason Mumford, and we postponed that, but we will do it again -- and

:28:35. > :28:40.we had a charity gig last night. Good luck and enjoy it.

:28:41. > :28:43.John Bishop one of many faces that made sure they were here in

:28:44. > :28:46.Manchester to be part of this special occasion and we will speak

:28:47. > :28:52.to ask many as we can for the duration of the programme and the

:28:53. > :28:55.35,000 runners as part of the Manchester 10k. The excitement is

:28:56. > :28:59.steadily building and everybody is looking forward to getting started

:29:00. > :29:04.and it is almost time for the elite women's race, Brendan Foster already

:29:05. > :29:11.talked about the great Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia and a contender

:29:12. > :29:14.for Great Britain, Gemma Steel. Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe will

:29:15. > :29:21.be talking us through this. Thank you, good morning, everybody.

:29:22. > :29:24.But we will talk more about the masses when they get going in 15

:29:25. > :29:31.minutes but with the elite men. Before that, it is the opportunity

:29:32. > :29:36.for the elite women to set up in this very special event this year.

:29:37. > :29:43.We mentioned Tirunesh Dibaba to the left of the picture and she has a

:29:44. > :29:46.field, I don't think many of them will think they can beat Tirunesh

:29:47. > :29:50.Dibaba but they will all be looking for their own performances. Katrina

:29:51. > :29:55.Wootton, coming back to is a very good form and she ran well in the

:29:56. > :30:00.10,000 metre trials for the World Championships in London last week.

:30:01. > :30:03.But one of our great young talent is a couple of years ago and she's

:30:04. > :30:09.coming back into her own. Sophie Duarte, of France. But two very

:30:10. > :30:15.experienced French athletes here, form a cross-country champion and

:30:16. > :30:21.her team-mate, a couple of years older, in the over 40 bracket,

:30:22. > :30:30.Christelle Daunay, European marathon champion from 2014. Gemma Steel, it

:30:31. > :30:34.has been a difficult couple of years for her and it looked as though she

:30:35. > :30:38.really was having a burgeoning career on the roads and to the

:30:39. > :30:43.marathon and she has put the marathon to one side for the time

:30:44. > :30:46.being and she will take on one small the great Tirunesh Dibaba, the

:30:47. > :30:50.defending champion here in Manchester, it is so good to see her

:30:51. > :30:55.here in any year, but this year in particular. The stars coming out to

:30:56. > :30:56.support everybody else and they know they take second billing this

:30:57. > :31:24.morning. The way they go. The elite women's

:31:25. > :31:30.race gets underway. The roads are clear. A big crowd is expected. We

:31:31. > :31:40.can see them ourselves already out there. All along this route they

:31:41. > :31:46.will be cheered. It is a good morning from Paula Radcliffe. Good

:31:47. > :31:54.morning. I apologise, it is actually afternoon now. Good afternoon to

:31:55. > :31:58.everybody. Especially to the people out there waiting to support the

:31:59. > :32:01.runners around this course. And also waiting to get started. And to

:32:02. > :32:08.complete this event and complete this run. And to get on with what

:32:09. > :32:13.makes us all feel better. Just to show that we are going to carry on.

:32:14. > :32:18.And just to show that life goes on and to show the spirit, as well.

:32:19. > :32:32.Straightaway, it is good to see the fighting spirit, Katrina is in good

:32:33. > :32:37.shape and an old mate of mine from Bedford. She raced very well at

:32:38. > :32:43.Highgate in the British ten kilometres. She just missed

:32:44. > :32:47.qualifying. But she did qualify for the European cup in Minsk later this

:32:48. > :32:54.month. She will be hoping to improve on the time there. She probably will

:32:55. > :33:00.not stay with the favourite for long, but it is good to say. This is

:33:01. > :33:05.the familiar route. Hats off to everybody. We will talk about this

:33:06. > :33:09.later, but it has been a big logistical exercise to make sure the

:33:10. > :33:14.event goes ahead today. It is the same route. A couple of changes

:33:15. > :33:19.around Old Trafford. That is when they know they have reached halfway.

:33:20. > :33:27.They turn around the Salford quays area. Then just across the way, when

:33:28. > :33:34.they come back to Mancunian Way, they will see the runners going in

:33:35. > :33:37.the opposite direction. 35,000 people here, not everybody can be on

:33:38. > :33:40.the course at the same time, but those roads will become covered with

:33:41. > :33:55.runners for the duration of the afternoon. This is Deansgate. Friday

:33:56. > :33:58.was emotional. It was a great afternoon. A lot of the elite

:33:59. > :34:09.athletes said how delighted they are to be here.

:34:10. > :34:19.There is always a quarry contingent here. We are on any moment... To be

:34:20. > :34:29.fair, everybody would want to be near you guys. -- there is always a

:34:30. > :34:35.Corrie contingent here. It's been an emotional week for everybody.

:34:36. > :34:41.Especially for you guys. It was a heartfelt reaction you had on Monday

:34:42. > :34:47.night, wasn't it? It really was. We all went into work on Tuesday. The

:34:48. > :34:58.place is normally chipper and happy. We'll -- and we all greet each other

:34:59. > :35:01.normally. It was a different vibe. You guys have decided to do

:35:02. > :35:07.something on the set to commemorate the 22, haven't you? Yes, we have a

:35:08. > :35:12.bench going on Coronation Street, which will be dedicated to the 22

:35:13. > :35:16.people who lost their lives. It is so important for us to do this. We

:35:17. > :35:21.are in Manchester programme, we are Manchester people, we have been

:35:22. > :35:30.affected just like everybody else here today. Lots of people will know

:35:31. > :35:35.about Martyn Hett, one of the people who died, who was a massive fan of

:35:36. > :35:42.Coronation Street. He was a big fan of Deidre Barlow. I met him once. He

:35:43. > :35:46.showed me his tattoo of Deidre Barlow. I didn't know what to say.

:35:47. > :35:55.Everybody who knew him knew he was a lovely lad and we will all miss him.

:35:56. > :35:59.He was one of the guys everybody talked about having his life cut

:36:00. > :36:04.short. He lived life to the fullest. A lot of you are running for the

:36:05. > :36:11.Manchester Children's Hospital. The fact there were so many children

:36:12. > :36:15.affected, as well. We were already running for the Children's Hospital

:36:16. > :36:18.prior to what happened on Monday. But now we feel that it is even more

:36:19. > :36:25.of a reason for us to get behind the hospital. A lot of the sick children

:36:26. > :36:29.were taken there. And the care they have given has just been

:36:30. > :36:34.unbelievable. We are proud to be running for them today. It is great

:36:35. > :36:39.to see all of you. I know it gets competitive onset, but let's see if

:36:40. > :36:46.we can keep it as civil as possible. Keep it under wraps. Great to see

:36:47. > :36:54.you. Denise? Tell me who you are running for.

:36:55. > :37:01.This is my mum's first-ever ten K. I'm proud of her. We are here to

:37:02. > :37:06.support her. Running for a cancer charity is really personal for us.

:37:07. > :37:09.We started doing this race about four years ago. This is a personal

:37:10. > :37:18.day. The charity is close to our hearts. Mum, are you feeling

:37:19. > :37:29.nervous? Not yet but I think I might be shortly when it starts. Batman

:37:30. > :37:35.said you are an important person. It has been a real challenge. I am

:37:36. > :37:39.looking forward to it, really. This is your own personal challenge but

:37:40. > :37:43.you're also raising money for this fantastic charity. Definitely. And

:37:44. > :37:53.they are going to spur you on, the supergiants. We will try, we will

:37:54. > :37:59.try and keep up. We might have to fly. It is great to be part of this

:38:00. > :38:03.atmosphere today? Always fantastic. After everything that has happened.

:38:04. > :38:16.The people are out. You can feel the love of it all. It is a great crowd,

:38:17. > :38:21.as ever. Fantastic. Enjoy it. A great bunch of super heroes there.

:38:22. > :38:24.Everybody a superhero today. And in terms of athletics, one of the

:38:25. > :38:32.greatest of all time is already out there. Katrina stayed with her in

:38:33. > :38:48.the early stages. Very brave. She really has attacked this early

:38:49. > :38:52.on. Yes, she is up on a course record pace. When she ran it she ran

:38:53. > :38:58.slow in the first half. She is well up on that pace. If the wind has not

:38:59. > :39:03.changed since my run this morning, she was running into a headwind,

:39:04. > :39:08.which makes it more impressive. Katrina tried to go with her but she

:39:09. > :39:12.has settled back. That means Katrina will be running on her own for the

:39:13. > :39:16.rest of this race pretty much because she is well ahead of the

:39:17. > :39:29.chasing pack behind her. It is currently being

:39:30. > :39:37.led by... Let's go back to the start of the race with Louise.

:39:38. > :39:42.I know you can see this on your television. It is heart stopping in

:39:43. > :39:50.some ways to look at this beautiful street and see so many thousands of

:39:51. > :39:55.people behind us. Having done this run myself a couple of times before,

:39:56. > :39:59.this is a nervous and exciting moment. At every single person you

:40:00. > :40:06.can see has made their own individual decision when they woke

:40:07. > :40:09.up this morning to come out and less than a week after that horrific

:40:10. > :40:22.attack, to come out here onto the streets of Manchester. It is a

:40:23. > :40:25.poignant moment. Over in St Ann's Square there was quiet,

:40:26. > :40:30.contemplation, and still people in tears this morning as they go there

:40:31. > :40:35.to pay tribute to the victims. I am going to tell you what is going to

:40:36. > :40:39.happen. There will be a minute's silence before every single wave in

:40:40. > :40:44.this race today. We will take that first minute 's silence. We will

:40:45. > :40:50.stay with the runners as they do that. And we will also hear the

:40:51. > :40:59.words from Tony Walsh. He will be reading the poem called Do

:41:00. > :41:00.Something. We will now have a minute's silence for the victims of

:41:01. > :42:35.the attack. Thank you, Manchester.

:42:36. > :42:43.APPLAUSE As we know, as we've shown the

:42:44. > :42:48.world, this is the place where we do something. Do something to show them

:42:49. > :42:54.what you're made of. Do something you've never done before. Do

:42:55. > :43:02.something to be what you're afraid of. Do something to make your

:43:03. > :43:06.spirits soar. Do something to get your heartbeat pounding, pounding,

:43:07. > :43:12.pounding. Do something with all your heart and soul and rock and roll. Do

:43:13. > :43:21.something to show we are astounding. Do something and this is how we

:43:22. > :43:26.roll. Do something to match a city's greatness. Do something through

:43:27. > :43:33.sunshine and through rain. Do something to say we need to hate

:43:34. > :43:38.less. Do something through courage and through pain. Do something for

:43:39. > :43:44.someone that you care for. Do something to help out with the cost.

:43:45. > :43:49.Do something for someone that you're there for. Do something for someone

:43:50. > :43:55.that you've lost. Do something to tell someone you love them. Do

:43:56. > :43:59.something then for someone who has gone. Do something for those with

:44:00. > :44:05.none above them. Do something for someone who lives on. Do something

:44:06. > :44:12.to stand out from the crowd. Do something to keep a dream alive. Do

:44:13. > :44:18.something to make a city proud and do something to shout hope will

:44:19. > :44:24.survive. Do something to show you don't surrender. We don't surrender.

:44:25. > :44:31.Do something for those we owe a debt. We thank you. Do something a

:44:32. > :44:38.city will remember. Do something the world will not forget. Do something

:44:39. > :44:43.for this great city's story. Do something and show them how it's

:44:44. > :44:55.done. Do something for love. In all its glory. Do something, for greater

:44:56. > :45:01.Manchester, do something, the Great Manchester Run, and make it live

:45:02. > :45:05.forever. Do something, the Great Manchester Run. Choose love. Have a

:45:06. > :45:13.fantastic Manchester day. APPLAUSE

:45:14. > :45:21.Ladies and gentlemen, Tony Walsh, AKA Longfella. Inspiring words from

:45:22. > :45:25.Tony Walsh. Lots has been written and said about the resolve of

:45:26. > :45:30.Manchester this week. Now it is their chance to show their unity and

:45:31. > :45:34.determination to carry on. It will begin one step at a time that they

:45:35. > :45:40.will move forward. And today they all move forward together.

:45:41. > :45:43.Individually, but as one. It is all about 35,000 taking part and the

:45:44. > :45:48.rest of the city hosting them. Also appreciate the elite athletes at the

:45:49. > :46:01.front. Here we go, the Great Manchester Run!

:46:02. > :46:16.And there will be an outpouring of emotion at the end for most of these

:46:17. > :46:21.people but for the next 10k, it is a chance for them to reflect and for

:46:22. > :46:25.everybody watching. It is also a chance to show what this city is

:46:26. > :46:30.about, what it is made of and what its people are about. As we have

:46:31. > :46:36.been saying all morning, it is simply incredible that so many have

:46:37. > :46:42.turned up here today. They have not been cowed by events. They are

:46:43. > :46:49.respectful and they remember all of those who suffered so tragically.

:46:50. > :46:56.And the city has been an inspiring place to be over the last two days.

:46:57. > :47:00.And of course, they are not all Mancunians. They have come from

:47:01. > :47:07.around the UK and some have come from different parts of the world.

:47:08. > :47:20.And nobody wanted to miss this special day. And a special word

:47:21. > :47:26.should be given not only to those who organised the event and of

:47:27. > :47:30.course it has been a week of a lot of hard work for people, but I think

:47:31. > :47:35.what everybody is saying, as ever, it is the emergency services and who

:47:36. > :47:42.were challenged so much this week. And also, there are a big part of

:47:43. > :47:49.today and so many thanks going to them from all of these people and

:47:50. > :47:57.people watching as well. But the event goes on, as it has done in the

:47:58. > :48:01.over the last few years. An event which has grown with the city, and

:48:02. > :48:14.an event which has always shown of the best of Manchester. But today,

:48:15. > :48:18.more so than ever. Apollo, you said you out running this morning, and

:48:19. > :48:24.running is such a big part of hearing for a lot of people. When we

:48:25. > :48:29.see big events like this, and we always say it's great to see so many

:48:30. > :48:34.people out running, but you and I, this is how we end our living for

:48:35. > :48:38.some years. Today, and other occasions, we think about the Boston

:48:39. > :48:44.Marathon a couple of years ago and it is a way for people to show their

:48:45. > :48:51.love for the city and their respect as I said earlier for all those who

:48:52. > :48:54.suffered. Yes, absolutely. I think sport and running in particular

:48:55. > :49:01.demonstrates humanity in a way that will always come back to the fall

:49:02. > :49:04.and so many people bold turned to running to celebrate happiness and

:49:05. > :49:08.to heal and to recover and show that spirit will go under and it will

:49:09. > :49:18.fight on and humanity, will always be stronger than acts which try and

:49:19. > :49:24.defeat that human spirit -- that spirit will go on. To celebrate

:49:25. > :49:30.today and get along the course even if they are not taking part and in

:49:31. > :49:36.their own new quake, to move on in a way that will always remember those

:49:37. > :49:49.people, those people who suffered. To show that human spirit which will

:49:50. > :49:51.always win. Where we will be concentrating today is the masses

:49:52. > :49:57.but we should not ignore the elite racers. We have that here in

:49:58. > :50:02.Tirunesh Dibaba in one of the greatest, if not the greatest

:50:03. > :50:07.distance runner. And she is going quick and that is the time she set

:50:08. > :50:13.when she made the record here. She did speed up dramatically in the

:50:14. > :50:17.second part. She started quick today. Katrina Wootton with her for

:50:18. > :50:21.the first kilometre but she has dropped back and is being chased by

:50:22. > :50:28.the group with the two French athletes Christelle Daunay and

:50:29. > :50:32.Tirunesh Dibaba and Gemma Steel and Mitchell from Ireland. Katrina

:50:33. > :50:36.Wootton looking glowingly in second place and those chasing her 20

:50:37. > :50:43.seconds behind at the moment. She may be able to rally and catch, but

:50:44. > :50:47.Tirunesh Dibaba looking very strong. It is only five or six weeks since

:50:48. > :50:52.that incredible run of hers in the London Marathon where she pretty

:50:53. > :50:56.much run to complete exhaustion and she was in a lot of difficulty in

:50:57. > :51:02.the closing mile. She is bouncing back now and that is has six

:51:03. > :51:08.kilometre in 3:2. So picking up as she did join the course record and

:51:09. > :51:12.she has recovered fully almost from the London Marathon and she is ready

:51:13. > :51:18.to build on that and to begin her tracks campaign with earnest. She is

:51:19. > :51:24.shifting along and that is one of the quickest kilometres. She looks

:51:25. > :51:27.behind and there is nothing to see. She will see the elite men in the

:51:28. > :51:33.opposite direction and that might be what she saw, she had a look at the

:51:34. > :51:39.showers, not quite a day for the showers. It is perfect. Ore said we

:51:40. > :51:44.have nice temperatures for racing and a little bit of a breeze. It was

:51:45. > :51:51.quite windy in Manchester yesterday, but that has settled down. Tirunesh

:51:52. > :51:55.Dibaba very much, as Paula were saying, after the London Marathon,

:51:56. > :52:00.she has her sights set on the marathon these days, but she is

:52:01. > :52:07.still a real talent is to be reckoned with on the roads as well

:52:08. > :52:12.over ten kilometres. Anything under 31 minutes is very good, obviously.

:52:13. > :52:19.I don't think she will be far away from that. Her record of 30, it

:52:20. > :52:23.would be something if she was to achieve that. Something around 31

:52:24. > :52:31.minutes is probably more likely. When she ran that, she came back...

:52:32. > :52:36.She is not far from that, but maintain that over the next four

:52:37. > :52:40.kilometres is tough and it is like a training run for her from this

:52:41. > :52:46.point, although she will have a lot of support. But it is hard to keep

:52:47. > :52:51.pushing when you are bouncing back from a marathon she ran a couple of

:52:52. > :52:57.weeks ago and also when you had the race won and real focus is on

:52:58. > :52:59.building for the season ahead. This is cutting back to the European

:53:00. > :53:06.marathon champion from 2014 Christelle Daunay who has Katrina

:53:07. > :53:12.Wootton in her sights. And hopefully Katrina can rally a bed and stay

:53:13. > :53:15.with her, but Christelle Daunay looking strong, she has been running

:53:16. > :53:21.strongly in a long time, her personal best times all run since

:53:22. > :53:26.2010 so she came on the very late in her career, but maintaining that

:53:27. > :53:33.form. This is the front of the men's race, we did not get a chance to

:53:34. > :53:40.talk about the men's runners. That is Dathan Ritzenhein. Birmingham,

:53:41. > :53:45.the tall figure from Australia. At the back of the group, Andy Vernon.

:53:46. > :53:49.And Wilson Kipsang, the winner of the London Marathon and win of the

:53:50. > :53:53.Tokyo Marathon the ship. He will not be contesting the World

:53:54. > :54:02.Championships. And also in there, Stephen Mokoka. They are not hanging

:54:03. > :54:08.around. Dathan Ritzenhein deciding the good policy for him today is to

:54:09. > :54:12.get out and to lead this. That is the way that Dathan Ritzenhein runs

:54:13. > :54:19.most of his races, he got sit out and he gets out there and does a

:54:20. > :54:25.runner does, he personifies that Manchester fighting spirit. He lays

:54:26. > :54:28.it all on the line. Into a strong headwind, he is pushing hard in this

:54:29. > :54:35.race and dragging the others with him. Early stages of the men's race,

:54:36. > :54:38.Tirunesh Dibaba heading down in the opposite direction the dual

:54:39. > :54:45.carriageway, but back to the start with Louise. I am here with the

:54:46. > :54:48.outgoing Lord Mayor who is very famous around these parts and the

:54:49. > :54:56.incoming Mayor and now the new Mayor of Manchester City macro. --

:54:57. > :55:01.Manchester, Andy Burnham. An extraordinary day to be here in

:55:02. > :55:05.Manchester. It is an extraordinary day to be here, this is the spirit

:55:06. > :55:09.of Manchester you can feel. The people are sending a message to the

:55:10. > :55:13.terrorists and extremists, you are not going to beat us and change who

:55:14. > :55:17.we are and what we do and we are going to move forward from here

:55:18. > :55:21.together. It has been an exceptionally difficult week for

:55:22. > :55:27.everybody. This place will get through it and go forward together.

:55:28. > :55:31.You are very fond of this city. Yes, this is the 15th year of the run for

:55:32. > :55:36.Manchester, the Great Manchester Run. It brings the crowds out. And

:55:37. > :55:41.the different charities. Originally, I was running for the We Love

:55:42. > :55:44.Manchester We Love Manchester and dandy for the homeless charity we

:55:45. > :55:50.set up and it was more poignant to come together and raise money for

:55:51. > :55:55.the We Love Manchester emergency funds with the red crows -- with the

:55:56. > :55:59.Red Cross and the Manchester Evening News. But yesterday, it was ?5.7

:56:00. > :56:03.million that was raised. Everybody has their own reasons for running

:56:04. > :56:06.today but I think this was really important for the people of

:56:07. > :56:10.Manchester and so many people came to say they were running it as a fun

:56:11. > :56:16.run and now they are raising money as well, so really important and

:56:17. > :56:22.that brings a city together. Leg different things going on in the

:56:23. > :56:26.city. St Ann's Square is still in place for moments of quiet. Yes, it

:56:27. > :56:31.is. People are responding in the way they want to respond. Everybody is

:56:32. > :56:35.feeling the togetherness and being with each other and being around the

:56:36. > :56:38.city together. That is really helping people through what is a

:56:39. > :56:43.difficult time. Next week, we have to move on again and we need to

:56:44. > :56:47.start talking about how we go forward from here and how we work

:56:48. > :56:52.together to tackle the extremism in our society. In a way that is due to

:56:53. > :56:56.Manchester, which is not about letting the terrorists or people

:56:57. > :57:01.divide us. We have to hold onto the spirit this week. And everybody

:57:02. > :57:04.behind us, and look at the thousands, they will have made their

:57:05. > :57:08.own individual decisions about why they want to be here. I know, and

:57:09. > :57:14.they are making a point of being here and last night, young people

:57:15. > :57:18.made a statement they wanted to be there. They are saying you are not

:57:19. > :57:23.going to changes, and that is such a powerful message to send out this

:57:24. > :57:29.weekend. Always an amazing atmosphere, not what you expect

:57:30. > :57:34.today? I'm expecting about 52, 55, timewise. That is what I said

:57:35. > :57:40.originally. You can hear a heavy cold and this is my politician's

:57:41. > :57:45.excuse I am getting in first! I can't believe I am hearing this! You

:57:46. > :57:49.can, how many politicians have you interviewed over the years? But I

:57:50. > :57:53.will give it my best. We're hoping for the smiles at the end of the

:57:54. > :57:57.race. I've been there will be a mixture and emotions will come out,

:57:58. > :58:01.but that is a good thing and people should let their emotions out -- I

:58:02. > :58:05.think there will be a mixture. A lot of people have been his and Tuesday

:58:06. > :58:08.morning and this is the first time a lot of people who have come to the

:58:09. > :58:13.city since Monday night to show defiance and to see what it is about

:58:14. > :58:17.and that is what is really important, but that everybody has

:58:18. > :58:23.come together and we are united. I can't speak to any more, you have a

:58:24. > :58:28.race to run. JJ is out in the crowd with so many different people. I am

:58:29. > :58:35.with Chorlton runners, they are local to this. This must be an

:58:36. > :58:41.important occasion today. This, this week's events, they have come home.

:58:42. > :58:44.We have decided to wear these patches in solidarity, we are doing

:58:45. > :58:49.what we love and we will carry on with life as normal which is

:58:50. > :58:53.important. We will run proud. But you will be running together or

:58:54. > :58:58.going for personal times? We might start off together, not sure how we

:58:59. > :59:06.will finish! We will give it a go! Is there really is a special energy

:59:07. > :59:12.around here today? Yes, with the emotions and everything, it is this

:59:13. > :59:15.week. Because we are all local and it means so much, yes, it is going

:59:16. > :59:24.to be emotional. I take it there was no part of you

:59:25. > :59:29.that thought about not coming today? Not at all, no, we are all here in

:59:30. > :59:33.solidarity to give out a message to everybody. You can't let things like

:59:34. > :59:37.this stop you live in your normal life, you can't allow it. Best of

:59:38. > :59:41.luck today, hopefully you will finish together and I'm sure you

:59:42. > :59:46.will cheer each other on at the finish line regardless.

:59:47. > :59:53.Good luck to the Chorlton crew, in the men's race, it is as she were,

:59:54. > :00:00.those five still at the front, Birmingham doing his stint with

:00:01. > :00:06.Dathan Ritzenhein. At Wilson Kipsang going well. But dropping off, Andy

:00:07. > :00:10.Vernon. He will be running in a couple of weeks' time to get the

:00:11. > :00:15.10,000 metre qualifying time for the World Championships. So they are

:00:16. > :00:20.approaching halfway, the men. In the women's race, it is all about

:00:21. > :00:24.Tirunesh Dibaba and she has been getting quicker towards the end. We

:00:25. > :00:28.said she would aim at around 31 minutes and she will be very close

:00:29. > :00:31.to that, she's into the last kilometre and she will soon be able

:00:32. > :00:37.to see the railway bridge on the opposite side of en Deansgate and

:00:38. > :00:42.that is about 200m to go, not long before she will be able to see that.

:00:43. > :00:48.And another display from Tirunesh Dibaba,, as strong as ever and

:00:49. > :00:54.clicking along at about 35 per kilometre.

:00:55. > :01:03.She looks nowhere near term full effort. The closing stages of the

:01:04. > :01:06.London Marathon, we remember, she was struggling and pushing her body.

:01:07. > :01:13.She looks different. She obviously recovered. Textbook display of how

:01:14. > :01:17.to bounce back from that and get your legs turning over at a quicker

:01:18. > :01:24.speed in preparation for the track season. It is important for her to

:01:25. > :01:28.move on from that and support Manchester, as well. She will be

:01:29. > :01:33.aiming for the finishing line. She would have had a time in mind to

:01:34. > :01:45.shoot close to. But she would have just wanted to see that her legs

:01:46. > :01:49.were responding well. Wootton is paying for starting off so fast, she

:01:50. > :01:53.has come back at it. This is just under the railway bridge. I can see

:01:54. > :02:00.the crowd or move into the barriers to cheer Tirunesh Dibaba. This is a

:02:01. > :02:05.familiar sight in Manchester. They are so pleased she is here, along

:02:06. > :02:09.with everybody else, of course. Tirunesh Dibaba sprinting home as

:02:10. > :02:18.she always manages to do. Still looking pretty fresh. She wins the

:02:19. > :02:23.great Manchester ten K just outside 31 minutes. Maybe no harder than a

:02:24. > :02:27.training run, but by anybody's standards that is world-class

:02:28. > :02:32.racing. A little smile from Tirunesh Dibaba. Another superb performance

:02:33. > :02:37.from her. Acknowledging the crowd. She has friends of the crowd, as

:02:38. > :02:40.well. She has become a great friend of Manchester. I'm sure she would

:02:41. > :02:50.not have wanted to have missed this race today. Bishoo is also an

:02:51. > :02:55.Arsenal fan. She will have been happy watching yesterday. -- she is

:02:56. > :03:01.also an Arsenal fan. Quickly back in the men's race. Pushing on hard

:03:02. > :03:07.here. Birmingham in the centre, the tall figure in blue and pink, was

:03:08. > :03:14.pushing it on a little bit earlier. Now it is the South African multiple

:03:15. > :03:19.champion over multiple distances. He knows these Manchester streets very

:03:20. > :03:27.well. He is keeping the pace honest and moving along strongly to the 250

:03:28. > :03:39.range. He has picked up a 249 and a 246. A respectable pace. And Lagat

:03:40. > :04:07.is bouncing back. He raced in Monza a couple of weeks ago.

:04:08. > :04:14.She is applauding the crowd. A great gesture from the Frenchwoman. France

:04:15. > :04:24.have had so many atrocities to deal with. The Diamond league had to

:04:25. > :04:29.follow on. Many of the athletes are aware of that atrocity on that

:04:30. > :04:41.particular occasion. Daunay applauding the home crowd. Wootton,

:04:42. > :04:47.as well. A tough race for Katrina. She had a real go with Tirunesh

:04:48. > :04:59.Dibaba. Jenner, a pretty solid run from her, she comes over the line in

:05:00. > :05:03.this place. -- Gemma, a pretty solid run from her. You would be excused

:05:04. > :05:07.for thinking that Tirunesh Dibaba had not been out for a fast run this

:05:08. > :05:11.morning. She looks relaxed. But she always looks like that. All

:05:12. > :05:14.throughout her track career. And now even when she is running the

:05:15. > :05:27.marathon. It is difficult to tell when she is tired. Thing is warming

:05:28. > :05:31.up in the men's race. Lagat enjoying racing on the roads in the latter

:05:32. > :05:34.part of his career. Does not have to worry about the speed on the cake.

:05:35. > :05:43.But if he is hanging around towards the end he will be looking to use

:05:44. > :05:48.that. Mokoka not running that well over the winter. But he did a pretty

:05:49. > :05:53.good ten K in South Africa recently. Much better than the performances he

:05:54. > :06:05.had had up to that. The last race showing he has been coming back into

:06:06. > :06:10.it. His exploits in the marathon have been disappointing recently. A

:06:11. > :06:14.non-finisher in the American trials last year. I think in New York he

:06:15. > :06:22.didn't finish in October. A difficult year. Yes, David is one of

:06:23. > :06:25.those athletes who has really struggled, showing huge potential,

:06:26. > :06:29.but he is probably the perfect half marathon runner. He has struggled to

:06:30. > :06:35.move up to the marathon distance. He suffered a lot with cramp, getting

:06:36. > :06:40.his refuelling strategy is right. But he is a formidable race over ten

:06:41. > :06:50.kilometres and the half marathon. He started his career with success back

:06:51. > :06:54.in 2001. He was on the podium. For an American Junior coming through,

:06:55. > :07:00.it was a big deal. He has built on his career, but has not been able to

:07:01. > :07:06.reflect that on the world stage, or at Olympic level. When he races in

:07:07. > :07:15.events like this it shows how much he is prepared to fight. It is all

:07:16. > :07:23.about the management of the race, rather than racing the clock, which

:07:24. > :07:26.is important, as he is realising. Lagat looks comfortable. He has been

:07:27. > :07:35.watching the runners in the opposite direction. I the others aware of

:07:36. > :07:44.that. Mokoka had a look. Lagat looks the most comfortable at this stage.

:07:45. > :07:50.Before a ten K, you would do a three kilometres and a five kilometres. He

:07:51. > :07:57.did that. And he said he would push on hard and make the others race to

:07:58. > :08:02.the line. Help his countrymen as much as possible. He was doing that

:08:03. > :08:08.in his training. He was talking about wanting to come here and

:08:09. > :08:14.perform well. It has always been enjoyment for Lagat. But now he can

:08:15. > :08:19.pick the events which means something to him and enjoy doing

:08:20. > :08:23.that. He is very much doing that today. The guys around him will be

:08:24. > :08:25.very aware he is sitting in the middle and he is, by far, the

:08:26. > :08:59.quickest finisher of the three. Ritzenheim pushing on. Will it be

:09:00. > :09:03.his year? Will Lagat, could do it? Meanwhile, back at the start, we

:09:04. > :09:08.have different waves, as you are probably aware, lots of people

:09:09. > :09:15.taking part. This is the Manchester United versus T Way -- this is the

:09:16. > :09:33.Manchester United versus this is the Manchester University

:09:34. > :09:39.way. Do you think you will keep your mask on all the way round? Maybe,

:09:40. > :09:46.maybe halfway. It would be success if you manage to keep it on?

:09:47. > :09:53.Definitely. How has today been? It has been good. I went to Saint and

:09:54. > :09:59.square. It was touching. Hammy times have you done this? -- I went to

:10:00. > :10:17.Saint Anne 's Square. Six, seven times. -- I went to St Ann's Square,

:10:18. > :10:31.it was touching, it was sad. How many times have you done this? Six,

:10:32. > :10:45.seven times. Best of luck, Leonardo. Ritzenheim is really pushing. Lagat

:10:46. > :10:49.is hovering. He is working hard but he knows every step is moving into

:10:50. > :10:53.his territory. Because in the last 200 metres would be surprised if he

:10:54. > :11:05.did not break away. But he is his best. Ritzenheim is no slouch. Lagat

:11:06. > :11:15.is really fast. But it is different to finishing 1500 metres on a track.

:11:16. > :11:21.He knows he has less than three minutes of running. He needs to

:11:22. > :11:25.throw everything at Lagat to get some daylight. If he is still

:11:26. > :11:32.sitting on his shoulder, or moving alongside him, as he is threatening

:11:33. > :11:46.to do now, then Ritzenheim is in trouble. When you have been running

:11:47. > :11:55.as fast Lagat as, an Olympic medallist, showing that 1500 metres

:11:56. > :12:03.runners are endurance athletes. But on the roads, at this pace, he is

:12:04. > :12:16.competitive. For Ritzenheim, it has always been around

:12:17. > :12:34.the 2.45 mark. Mokoka looks tired. The tall Australian has not raced

:12:35. > :12:43.that much in 2017. He is chasing down for third. Lagat Cannot hold

:12:44. > :12:59.on. Ritzenheim has done what he has been trying to do. He cannot hold

:13:00. > :13:03.on. He hasn't got it yet because Lagat is still going. You can see

:13:04. > :13:08.how much it means to Ritzenheim. It has been a turbulent time for him.

:13:09. > :13:13.Lots of things going on back in the US. Very happy to come here and let

:13:14. > :13:16.his feet and legs do the talking and go out and race hard and run away

:13:17. > :13:26.from that and celebrate it with a strong run here. Ritzenheim from the

:13:27. > :13:30.USA. Not a lot to cheer over the last 12 months. But he had a big win

:13:31. > :13:34.at the American road championships. And he has come to Manchester on

:13:35. > :13:39.this emotional day. And what they win it is going to be for him. He

:13:40. > :13:44.keeps checking behind, because he is expecting Lagat to charge. He won't.

:13:45. > :13:52.The American will come home to win the great Manchester ten K.

:13:53. > :13:59.Ritzenheim is this year's champion. 28 minutes and six seconds his final

:14:00. > :14:03.time. A good performance from Ritzenheim. Lagat take second. One

:14:04. > :14:11.better than last year. He thought he would be able to hang on for the

:14:12. > :14:22.kick, but he can't. Mokoka just ahead of Birmingham. The last

:14:23. > :14:29.kilometre was two minutes 50. It is slightly uphill. Andy Burnham just

:14:30. > :14:34.crossing the line, as well. You will have enjoyed that, Paula. The person

:14:35. > :14:39.at the front, running hard. Just looking at him. Showing Brendan

:14:40. > :14:48.Foster how much it means to him to be here. To be able to come here. To

:14:49. > :14:53.start... It is some campaign. He has been racing really well on the roads

:14:54. > :14:59.this year. But to celebrate that with a victory over a tough field.

:15:00. > :15:04.He beat Lagat and well by making it a race to his strengths. As running

:15:05. > :15:09.strong out there. And really pushing and taking a race to him. And being

:15:10. > :15:18.able to come away with a victory means a huge amount to Ritzenheim.

:15:19. > :15:32.Skull and just crossing the line from Ireland. -- Scullon just

:15:33. > :15:33.crossing the line from Ireland. I think a lot of these guys will have

:15:34. > :15:50.personal bests today. It was hard for Ritzenheim. He knew

:15:51. > :15:54.what he had to do. You always admire a distance runner who applies

:15:55. > :16:00.himself in such a way over the last couple of kilometres. Trying to get

:16:01. > :16:05.rid of one of the best in terms of kicking, Lagat. Look how much it

:16:06. > :16:06.means to Ritzenheim. Big for him. Something for him to cheer about

:16:07. > :16:23.after a difficult year for him. Is a rather tired Bernard Lagat in

:16:24. > :16:28.second place. So the results today. Earlier, we had two wheelchair

:16:29. > :16:38.races. But Simon Lawson was a very good winner, from Great Britain. In

:16:39. > :16:48.the women's race, a personal best for Lizzie Tench in first. And we

:16:49. > :16:50.sort an emphatic win by Tirunesh Dibaba over Christelle Daunay,

:16:51. > :16:58.world-class running once more from the Ethiopian. Katrina Wootton went

:16:59. > :17:09.with Tirunesh Dibaba early on and paid for that rather. The winning

:17:10. > :17:12.time went to Dathan Ritzenhein, aggregate time would mean less than

:17:13. > :17:21.the win. Great performance from here am -- from him. And once more doing

:17:22. > :17:24.well in Manchester, Stephen Mokoka. Just ahead of Collis. And in sixth

:17:25. > :17:35.place, Andy Vernon. And very happy day for Dathan

:17:36. > :17:40.Ritzenhein of America and another masterclass by Tirunesh Dibaba. We

:17:41. > :17:44.have relocated from the start to the finish of the 10k and some of the

:17:45. > :17:50.retread is making their way over the finish line to rapturous applause.

:17:51. > :17:53.We are just next to the Beetham Tower and the Hilton hotel in the

:17:54. > :17:57.centre of Manchester and I need not have set an alarm this morning

:17:58. > :18:03.because the noise from here since about eight got this morning has

:18:04. > :18:07.been huge. When the masses take to the roads shortly, they are really

:18:08. > :18:12.going to feel it. It is a special occasion and I think the Sun might

:18:13. > :18:16.just be making its way out as well. But there has been so much action

:18:17. > :18:20.already today because for the very first time, as well as the elite

:18:21. > :18:26.races and the 10k, we also had our very first half-marathon in

:18:27. > :18:32.Manchester. It got under way at about nine o'clock in the morning

:18:33. > :18:35.and they are trying to expand this festival of a sporting weekend that

:18:36. > :18:43.includes the CityGames we saw on Friday as well. And as you can see,

:18:44. > :18:48.the mascots are here and children. We had children's races. Children as

:18:49. > :18:52.young as three taking part in the junior race and the older people

:18:53. > :18:59.round in the 2.5 kilometre junior event. About 2,000 people taking

:19:00. > :19:04.part in a new central location in Manchester. So everybody wanting to

:19:05. > :19:10.take a piece of the special events. We know what it it is against a

:19:11. > :19:13.backdrop of in Manchester but as the afternoon has gone on, everybody

:19:14. > :19:19.enjoying what is a very special sporting occasion every year. But it

:19:20. > :19:23.is about time the nervous masses took to the streets of Manchester.

:19:24. > :19:27.Thousands of them are ready and thousands signed up after the events

:19:28. > :19:32.we had on Monday night, and so many looking forward to taking in the

:19:33. > :19:36.atmosphere and the occasion. So back to you Paula Radcliffe and Steve

:19:37. > :19:40.Cram, it is going to be a special afternoon.

:19:41. > :19:49.For many, it has not started. We still have areas waves to get under

:19:50. > :19:55.way. As I said, so many people taking part in this 10k, they have

:19:56. > :19:59.to be staggered across a couple of hours. The rest of the afternoon,

:20:00. > :20:01.they will still be coming across the finish line and the streets will

:20:02. > :20:08.continue to be filled by these inspiring people. A lot of people

:20:09. > :20:11.taking part, of course, thinking about everything that happens this

:20:12. > :20:20.week. As ever, raising money for charity. Just mentioning Brigid

:20:21. > :20:30.Caldwell, running her first 10k today, and she is running for

:20:31. > :20:38.Christie's. So good luck to her. Keep your messages coming in. It is

:20:39. > :20:47.an inspiring sight at the best of times. But the week that we have had

:20:48. > :20:50.here in Manchester, today, you can't help but admire everybody that has

:20:51. > :21:02.turned out today. Both Tehran and to watch. -- both running and watching.

:21:03. > :21:06.As I said, there are so many inspiring stories and we can't tell

:21:07. > :21:08.them all but we can let you know about some, this is an inspiring

:21:09. > :21:21.young man from Rochdale. My name is Azeem Amir, I am 18 and a

:21:22. > :21:24.blind runner, I have a visual impairment which means I have no

:21:25. > :21:29.site in my right eye and a bit bit of perception in my left. I don't

:21:30. > :21:35.let it stop me in sport or on the academic side and I have used it to

:21:36. > :21:41.my advantage to inspire and motivate others to say that if I can do it,

:21:42. > :21:45.why can't you? The ambition is to play for my country, to represent my

:21:46. > :21:52.country in the sport that I love and not allowed the fact that I have got

:21:53. > :21:56.no site to act as a barrier. If fully able-bodied players can resent

:21:57. > :22:03.their country, with a visual impairment and a disability, why

:22:04. > :22:06.can't I? Participation within sport has made me a more well rounded

:22:07. > :22:11.person and increased my confidence and I have lead a lot of lessons

:22:12. > :22:18.which if I had been more of an introvert and not experienced

:22:19. > :22:21.different sports, were not. I did the Manchester 10k run last year

:22:22. > :22:26.with my guide, Sam Hinchcliffe, we use a skipping rope and he leads the

:22:27. > :22:32.way with verbal commands and uses the rope to tell me which way we are

:22:33. > :22:34.going next. Running with a partner makes it much more fun and

:22:35. > :22:42.interesting and quite funny sometimes. I basically wanted to

:22:43. > :22:45.give something back to the Royal eye Hospital for the amount of care and

:22:46. > :22:50.support they have given me and my family for the last 18 years. They

:22:51. > :22:55.give people the ability to be independent because site is such a

:22:56. > :23:00.factor, it is one of your main senses. And they try and preserve

:23:01. > :23:04.that as much as they can and they want to give somebody the virginity

:23:05. > :23:08.to live their life to the maximum. With the events that have occurred

:23:09. > :23:15.this week, as long as every single person completes the 10k with a

:23:16. > :23:18.smile on their face, it will have been a huge success, showcasing what

:23:19. > :23:25.Manchester has to offer to the world.

:23:26. > :23:29.And it is lovely hearing Azeem Amir talking about the smiles because I

:23:30. > :23:34.have a unique vantage point standing here and when the runners run past,

:23:35. > :23:38.they do so either side. Blind We have had to waves of the masses

:23:39. > :23:43.going past and every person I have seen has been smiling, it is

:23:44. > :23:48.immensely powerful. If you would like to do a 10k and you want to

:23:49. > :23:52.start smaller than that, there are lots of ways you can start and it

:23:53. > :23:56.does not have to be running, it could be Triathlon, swimming,

:23:57. > :24:02.whatever, and he is more information about how to get inspired.

:24:03. > :24:05.This is BBC sport's campaign to help you get active. You can find

:24:06. > :24:12.inspirational stories from people just like you and hints and tips and

:24:13. > :24:16.practical guides to help you give something a go. There is an activity

:24:17. > :24:26.binder to help you find something to try near you. Just get up, get

:24:27. > :24:31.inspired and get active. There was a bit earlier, he spoke to

:24:32. > :24:36.somebody running this 10k today and only in April last year, she could

:24:37. > :24:40.only run for one -- from one might post to another, so there is

:24:41. > :24:45.potential for everybody. And this is a special way, are they going to

:24:46. > :24:50.give me a wave? JJ can tell us why this is a little bit special, how

:24:51. > :24:55.extraordinary! We have a very special group and a

:24:56. > :25:01.very special wave, the purple wave. The key, what is the purple wave? It

:25:02. > :25:06.is a mass entry from the University of Manchester, we got 1100 people

:25:07. > :25:10.last year for the first year and we got 2,500 people this year. Staff,

:25:11. > :25:15.students, wearing purple, just brilliant. So you have people from

:25:16. > :25:19.all over the world probably. You are not from Manchester, but how special

:25:20. > :25:25.is Manchester now you are part of it? Coming to Manchester just under

:25:26. > :25:28.two years ago, I have felt such a community, I feel like I really

:25:29. > :25:32.belong here and there is a friendliness in Manchester which

:25:33. > :25:37.does not exist anywhere else. I am from the South and Manchester is so

:25:38. > :25:41.much more happy and warm and more bubbly than anywhere else. Today is

:25:42. > :25:47.a massive challenge and you are doing it just like a bee, what is

:25:48. > :25:51.the relevance? The bee is the University's mascot for many people

:25:52. > :25:55.and for me, it is a reason to run quite slowly and is to raise some

:25:56. > :26:00.money. The purple wave, you are raising money, what are we trying to

:26:01. > :26:03.support today? It is to raise money for all sorts of things and one

:26:04. > :26:06.cause special to the University is a scholarship programme for students

:26:07. > :26:13.from Africa so a what others raising money that today. Best of luck to

:26:14. > :26:16.all of you and in a bee suit and everybody from Manchester

:26:17. > :26:21.University. Well done, so many students and

:26:22. > :26:26.staff. Over 2,000. They will be heading off shortly.

:26:27. > :26:32.And we look at those coming across the finish line and I was watching a

:26:33. > :26:36.couple of people, on a day like this, still looking at their

:26:37. > :26:41.watches, they still want a personal best and to perform well. Chilton

:26:42. > :26:47.runners holding hands crossing the line. That will continue throughout

:26:48. > :26:52.the afternoon. This is another story now to look at. You mentioned one

:26:53. > :26:55.university, there are two and this is about a student from Manchester

:26:56. > :27:09.Metropolitan University. My name is Jessica Dyer and this is

:27:10. > :27:11.my run. I am running the 10k for a mental health charity Mind because I

:27:12. > :27:17.have had my own battles with mental health, starting from 11 years old.

:27:18. > :27:24.That spiralled into five years of self harming. And depression. For

:27:25. > :27:30.me, the easiest way to explain it would be darkness. It feels like

:27:31. > :27:33.everything has a grey cloud over it and everything just feels dark. I

:27:34. > :27:38.couldn't find joy in anything. The number of people that tell you to

:27:39. > :27:42.stop doing something rather than asking you how you feel while trying

:27:43. > :27:52.to understand why, that was the biggest problem. It culminated in a

:27:53. > :27:57.couple of suicide attempts. And the final one was the point at which I

:27:58. > :28:03.was like, this really is not OK. That feeling is of you are ready to

:28:04. > :28:09.leave everything and everyone behind them, it is actually quite scary to

:28:10. > :28:18.know that I was at that point where nothing at all mattered to me any

:28:19. > :28:22.more. When I decided, actually, I want to engage with the help that I

:28:23. > :28:27.had already been receiving for a period of time, I engaged with it

:28:28. > :28:30.and I decided, I want to get better for me. Since then, I have just been

:28:31. > :28:41.trying to surround myself with happiness. But I think this run that

:28:42. > :28:46.will be the first of many and I can sense that this is the start of me

:28:47. > :28:52.getting out there and doing as much as I can now. I am halfway to a

:28:53. > :28:56.degree and doing this 10k, I am reaching for as many different

:28:57. > :29:00.opportunities as I can and I can actually see a future now whereas

:29:01. > :29:05.this time six, seven years ago, the future for maiden was not to live

:29:06. > :29:16.any more. So incredibly proud of myself for what I have achieved and

:29:17. > :29:20.what I will keep achieving. You two can't keep away from each

:29:21. > :29:25.other! I saw you on Friday at the CityGames and you are running here

:29:26. > :29:28.today, how has it been? It was great the atmosphere was amazing. Forget

:29:29. > :29:35.about the time, but that was just about Manchester, the Manchester bee

:29:36. > :29:39.and saluting the crowd, they were wonderful. Amazing reception as you

:29:40. > :29:43.crossed the line. But who crossed the line first? Me, and this

:29:44. > :29:47.occasion. It was incredible, the support, Manchester has come out to

:29:48. > :29:50.support everybody today and it was incredible, I really enjoyed it.

:29:51. > :29:55.Just put into context what a day like this and means to the runners

:29:56. > :30:02.and the crowds. I really can't, it is just in the last week, the

:30:03. > :30:06.outpouring of kindness and people coming together and being defiant,

:30:07. > :30:09.it has just been amazing. This is an amazing city and I am just so proud

:30:10. > :30:14.to be here and to be running in this event, it is just amazing. Well cool

:30:15. > :30:23.down and well done and good to see you both.

:30:24. > :30:32.Ella, you were running this morning, how was it? It was fantastic. And

:30:33. > :30:38.you have run it four times, haven't you? Yes. Why are you running it? I

:30:39. > :30:43.want to help the Children's Hospital and make people proud. That's

:30:44. > :30:47.because you spend a lot of time in hospital yourself, don't you? Your

:30:48. > :30:53.mum is here and you finally persuaded her to run. Yes. How far

:30:54. > :31:03.are you going to run? Ten kilometres. Have you run far before?

:31:04. > :31:07.This will be my first time. Are you nervous? Yes, just hoping I can get

:31:08. > :31:12.over the finish line. Hopefully the atmosphere and adrenaline will help

:31:13. > :31:16.me. Tell us about the hospital you are raising money for. Manchester

:31:17. > :31:21.Children's Hospital. Ella has been treated there since she was four.

:31:22. > :31:28.She will need it throughout. It was our second home for a time. Thank

:31:29. > :31:31.you just doesn't do enough. And we know that loads of people were

:31:32. > :31:39.treated there Monday night. Yes. The majority. They just do amazing work.

:31:40. > :31:48.They stopped the number rising higher, I think. Show everybody your

:31:49. > :31:55.medal. Fantastic. And you are going to be a starter, aren't you? Yes, I

:31:56. > :32:06.am. Shall we say good luck to your mum? Yes, good luck, mum, and don't

:32:07. > :32:18.be nervous. Thanks. Sweet little girl. Well, Manchester

:32:19. > :32:25.United play there, and they played a part in this dramatic week. And, as

:32:26. > :32:30.ever, a fitting backdrop for this great sporting city. And the people

:32:31. > :32:42.of this city. Showing what they are all about. They will have fun out

:32:43. > :32:50.there, as well. But they will all be, I'm sure, thinking and

:32:51. > :32:54.remembering the events of this week. It's been interesting. I was in the

:32:55. > :33:07.USA when it happened. I think there was an initial, well, thought that

:33:08. > :33:13.it might not go ahead this weekend. Brendan said it wasn't should we it

:33:14. > :33:18.was how do we do it. Yes, the biggest question was about security.

:33:19. > :33:23.Just making sure that everybody is safe. As you mentioned earlier.

:33:24. > :33:27.Everybody heals in their roadway. Everybody carries on and moves on.

:33:28. > :33:32.We will always remember what happened, but life has to go on,

:33:33. > :33:38.like us to continue, we must stand up and show the human spirit is

:33:39. > :33:41.stronger than this. For so many people it is about getting out

:33:42. > :33:45.there, feeling it, feeling the heartbeat, feeling the city alive

:33:46. > :33:52.along the route, and coming together in this way. In any road race, there

:33:53. > :33:56.is always human spirit stories. More than ever, I think, today, and this

:33:57. > :34:07.weekend, that will be felt in so many cities, but particularly on the

:34:08. > :34:23.streets of Manchester today. Louise is enjoying her advantage point --

:34:24. > :34:33.vantage point. She is a keen runner herself. I went over to St Ann's

:34:34. > :34:38.Square earlier. It was an inspiring place to be. Quiet. Respect. Lots of

:34:39. > :34:43.families there. The floral tribute is growing and will continue to

:34:44. > :34:56.grow. Today it is a tribute of a different type.

:34:57. > :35:04.The young and old have come to take part. And they have come to cheer.

:35:05. > :35:08.I've never seen so many people out watching this event. It has always

:35:09. > :35:14.been popular but it is good to see so many people taking part and

:35:15. > :35:18.coming along to cheer, as well. They are all here. Thank you. When

:35:19. > :35:24.you were with me earlier there was just a steady trickle of people

:35:25. > :35:27.coming down. Look at this stream of incredible, special runners making

:35:28. > :35:34.their Way down Deansgate. Louise was talking about the smiles on their

:35:35. > :35:39.faces from the start. Now, it is released, but enjoyment, as well.

:35:40. > :35:45.You can see that everybody, not just the runners, but everybody who has

:35:46. > :35:49.lined the route, everybody having such a fantastic day. Some people

:35:50. > :35:52.finding it more difficult than others, obviously, but at the end of

:35:53. > :35:55.the day people are just getting through it. There are so many

:35:56. > :36:02.stories we are witnessing and are hearing about today. But one is of a

:36:03. > :36:08.woman called Helen, who despite her own battle is still giving back to

:36:09. > :36:15.so many people. Here is her story. My name is Helen and this is my run.

:36:16. > :36:21.I was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer in April of last year.

:36:22. > :36:26.The lump I found was in my armpit, not on my breast, so much so that my

:36:27. > :36:30.first mammogram did not show it. For a lot of women who have breast

:36:31. > :36:34.cancer, they have a primary diagnosis which is curative. They

:36:35. > :36:38.get cured of disease and some are unfortunate and have a re-occurrence

:36:39. > :36:42.which may spread to secondary later on in life. For me mine was

:36:43. > :36:46.terminal, unfortunately, so I am being treated at the Christie and I

:36:47. > :36:57.am hoping to live for a good few years yet. I felt whiny. I

:36:58. > :37:03.occasionally do. -- initially I felt why me, I occasionally do, but it is

:37:04. > :37:09.bad luck. I'm not actually running for one of the big cancer charities,

:37:10. > :37:16.or the Christie, although I support them, I'm running for an

:37:17. > :37:21.organisation called Pegasus Riding For The Disabled. I am a trustee,

:37:22. > :37:28.coach, and every Sunday we teach kids and adults with disabilities to

:37:29. > :37:34.ride horses. OK, ie ready to go faster? Off we go when you are

:37:35. > :37:39.ready. -- are you ready to go faster? There is nothing better than

:37:40. > :37:45.seeing somebody with quite a severe disabilities, never ridden a horse

:37:46. > :37:53.before, putting them on a pony and watching them go. Sometimes I can

:37:54. > :37:58.turn up grumpy. Ten minutes into a lesson I don't feel that way any

:37:59. > :38:04.more. Realistically I know my cancer cannot be cured. But I'm hoping that

:38:05. > :38:10.by exercise I can stay as well as possible for as long as possible.

:38:11. > :38:15.The start of the race is always emotional. Being in amongst those

:38:16. > :38:20.thousands of people it is hugely emotional. Running it, just a few

:38:21. > :38:23.weeks out of my last chemotherapy session, is going to feel, that's

:38:24. > :38:31.going to feel like a big achievement. The emotion of

:38:32. > :38:39.finishing with my supporters will be amazing. And I will cross the line,

:38:40. > :38:45.even if it is walking. I am with some of Helen's biggest fans and

:38:46. > :38:51.friends. She is incredible. Shears. We are inspired. She isn't thinking

:38:52. > :38:54.of herself. -- she is, we are inspired. She was just thinking

:38:55. > :38:58.about the children she helps and her charity. It is that active

:38:59. > :39:05.selflessness which is inspiring about her. What do you think today

:39:06. > :39:10.will mean for her? The whole day is just emotional. After everything

:39:11. > :39:13.that has happened anyway. But going through all of the chemotherapy she

:39:14. > :39:19.has been going through, and being part of today, part of Manchester,

:39:20. > :39:25.it will mean so much more. You said you did not want to speak. Put into

:39:26. > :39:33.context how amazing she is. Absolutely brilliant. This is the

:39:34. > :39:36.fourth one. She is on chemotherapy. This is specifically for riding for

:39:37. > :39:44.the disabled. This is somebody who keeps chickens, who works full-time,

:39:45. > :39:52.which is why, if we turn around, that was always the joke. We always

:39:53. > :39:58.say if she isn't busy doing something else, she is fighting

:39:59. > :40:02.crime at night. I am inspired by her story. I cannot wait to meet her.

:40:03. > :40:08.Thank you. Lovely to see them. Nobody could do

:40:09. > :40:11.this on their own. These are the most special people, the ones

:40:12. > :40:17.getting them over the line. I have just heard that Helen is passed the

:40:18. > :40:22.halfway mark. She said she would run over that finish line, even if she

:40:23. > :40:26.walked the last kilometre. One of the most lovely things has been

:40:27. > :40:34.watching people tried to run the last yards. One guy took a stumble.

:40:35. > :40:44.A few people got around him, rallied him, and got him over the line.

:40:45. > :40:47.Let's go to JJ who is with some of the crowd back at the start.

:40:48. > :40:59.I am with some of our supporters. Who are you here to see? Very shy.

:41:00. > :41:05.She is here for her daddy. How proud is she going to be today? Very

:41:06. > :41:09.proud. Very proud he has come after everything that has happened this

:41:10. > :41:15.week, and he is still determined to come. Before every wave that has

:41:16. > :41:20.been silence, a poem, it is really powerful, isn't it? Yes. It sums up

:41:21. > :41:25.Manchester. We stand together no matter what happens. How important

:41:26. > :41:28.do you think it is to the runners and for your husband to come out

:41:29. > :41:35.here and cheer them on? It is just amazing. All of them have trained so

:41:36. > :41:42.hard. They are doing this to raise money for charities. It is so

:41:43. > :41:50.selfless that they are doing it. Really proud of them. Glad you are

:41:51. > :41:55.proud of them and having a wonderful day. We will see them, crossed the

:41:56. > :42:00.line soon. Enjoy your day. That pride really echoed throughout

:42:01. > :42:04.the city. I'm with Tony Walsh who you will be familiar with. Reading

:42:05. > :42:08.that incredible poem at the vigil. And you have been reading another

:42:09. > :42:14.poem to the start of each wave, how has it been for you? Very emotional.

:42:15. > :42:19.I am trying to keep mindful of why this is happening to me. Why this is

:42:20. > :42:22.happening in Manchester. The reaction to the first poem has been

:42:23. > :42:27.amazing around the world. People keep stopping me in the street with

:42:28. > :42:32.tears in their eyes. I had a poem today, I wrote it a couple of years

:42:33. > :42:36.ago for the run, and it has given a couple of lines in it new meaning

:42:37. > :42:41.today. It really does have new meaning, listening to it. You are

:42:42. > :42:48.clever with words. Words can, in some ways, help in these occasions.

:42:49. > :42:53.We looked at artists, musicians -- we look at artists, musicians, and

:42:54. > :42:59.poets to say the things we cannot say ourselves. It has been for the

:43:00. > :43:06.community today. It is what artists do, say the big words for us. We

:43:07. > :43:13.have been standing here. Three waves so far. On every single person I

:43:14. > :43:18.have seen is smiles on their faces. The start of something special for

:43:19. > :43:21.each individual person. I have been changing the words to my poem right

:43:22. > :43:27.up until the last second on the podium. I was going to have a line

:43:28. > :43:32.at the end, we will fight their fear with fun, I changed last second. But

:43:33. > :43:36.if we are choosing love we are rejecting hatred and fear and we

:43:37. > :43:41.will have a smile on our face. They are certainly doing that today. Yes.

:43:42. > :43:46.Thank you for being here, and thank you for your words. And now, a

:43:47. > :43:59.celebrity finisher? We have a couple. We have Peter

:44:00. > :44:05.here. We need to have some sort of chair here. I want to pull you up.

:44:06. > :44:09.Talk to us about the people who pulled you through. There was

:44:10. > :44:16.fantastic support all the way. That is the most I have seen and I have

:44:17. > :44:22.done 11. It is fantastic. From 11 to a first timer. What struck me was

:44:23. > :44:27.the number of, well, he got in my head at the start saying he couldn't

:44:28. > :44:34.decide if we needed the toilet. That was in my mind all the way round so

:44:35. > :44:38.I stopped for a moment. What struck me were all of the people who said

:44:39. > :44:43.thank you. You want to say thank you back to them. As Peter said, the

:44:44. > :44:47.atmosphere is amazing. It is more than pride, more than defiance, you

:44:48. > :44:52.cannot sum it up, it is a great atmosphere. Having done it 11 times

:44:53. > :44:57.I'm sure the emotions are different. What was going through your head?

:44:58. > :45:04.The atrocity is in your mind all the time. It breaks your heart. I am

:45:05. > :45:13.feeling emotional, actually. It's been a bad week. What you have been

:45:14. > :45:23.doing has given so much backed everybody else. They have been doing

:45:24. > :45:26.it back. The least we could do. -- what you have been doing has given

:45:27. > :45:32.so much back to everybody else. We have another story will

:45:33. > :45:39.We are doing the Manchester 10k and we are doing it slightly

:45:40. > :45:42.differently. We are doing it in a caterpillar. It is the longest

:45:43. > :45:49.caterpillar I have seen. It is bright yellow. Don't think you can

:45:50. > :46:00.miss really! We are running fall Went you wish upon a. It grants

:46:01. > :46:05.wishes for children's wishes. The firemen are amazing and may have

:46:06. > :46:11.been supporting our charity for ten years and they are amazing and they

:46:12. > :46:15.are an inspiration. We have met a number of the families that they

:46:16. > :46:20.grant wishes for and it has made us even more happy that what we are

:46:21. > :46:28.doing is going towards a good cause. Jamie is 12 years old and she was

:46:29. > :46:33.diagnosed at once which is eight -- with a genetic disorder which stops

:46:34. > :46:39.you developing. So she has an incredibly thin bones because she

:46:40. > :46:43.does not walk and she has crushing internal organs and she does not

:46:44. > :46:47.walk or talk and she never will. There are a lot of things we can't

:46:48. > :46:52.do because there are three of us as a family and we are very restricted.

:46:53. > :46:55.The first thing they suggested was a winter wonderland event at the

:46:56. > :47:02.Center Parcs which was the most incredible experience we have ever

:47:03. > :47:07.had. The memories these events procreate can't be taken away by it

:47:08. > :47:13.is an illness and that is what those guys are doing and that is why it is

:47:14. > :47:21.so important. The main feeling is we are trying to raise as much money on

:47:22. > :47:25.as we can for Wish Upon A Star and that is our overriding achievement.

:47:26. > :47:28.The money changes people's lives and the fact these guys constantly

:47:29. > :47:30.support the charity is unbelievable, they are such a great bunch of guys,

:47:31. > :47:48.they are amazing. Not sure if they have started yet.

:47:49. > :47:56.30 of them dressed as a giant Caterpillar. It may turn into a

:47:57. > :48:00.beautiful butterfly, who knows? Good luck to them at back, it is a great

:48:01. > :48:10.cause and they are raising money for. So many have made plans in the

:48:11. > :48:15.weeks and months leading up to this. And events to some extent taken

:48:16. > :48:19.over, their own aspirations, but of course some important that they

:48:20. > :48:24.stick to those plans and they carry on with what they were going to do

:48:25. > :48:29.and that is what today has really been about. That is another group.

:48:30. > :48:38.Not quite sure what they are dressed as. Too far away to be able to tell.

:48:39. > :48:43.So going just over one hour, for those who started in the first wave,

:48:44. > :48:51.63 minutes as they crossed the line in front of me. Many of these,

:48:52. > :48:57.wearing different colours. White, orange, mingling together. What this

:48:58. > :49:03.event was meant to be about and it always will be about. And they will

:49:04. > :49:08.return in future years, I'm sure, and they will of course remember

:49:09. > :49:13.2017. And it was absolutely right, I have never seen so many people are

:49:14. > :49:17.watching. It is always popular in Deansgate but you can see the crowds

:49:18. > :49:20.on the route. That is some of the University group, 2,000 of them

:49:21. > :49:29.taking part and they will have plenty of support. Of course, as I

:49:30. > :49:37.mentioned, we have the half-marathon for the first time today. I'm sure

:49:38. > :49:41.that events will continue to grow. 10k in itself a massive challenge

:49:42. > :49:45.for so many people as Louise was mentioning, plenty of people for

:49:46. > :49:49.whom this is their very first 10k and they might move on to the

:49:50. > :49:57.half-marathon in future years. Still a couple of ways to get going. Three

:49:58. > :50:02.o'clock is the last. And at the finish, it is starting to get a

:50:03. > :50:05.little crowded as more and more people finish their day and finished

:50:06. > :50:18.their run. You have just crossed the line, how

:50:19. > :50:26.are you feeling, Johnny? Absolutely exhausted. I was trying to go below

:50:27. > :50:30.37 minutes and I think I did 37:2 but it was a good atmosphere, I was

:50:31. > :50:34.trying to get top 100 and hopefully I might have done it. It was tough

:50:35. > :50:38.out there today. Yes, quite warm, not as warm as yesterday. It is a

:50:39. > :50:43.strange atmosphere with what happened. I used to teach in

:50:44. > :50:48.Manchester a couple of years ago and Molly was one of my students. There

:50:49. > :50:52.are some children at the school are used to teach at who were at the

:50:53. > :50:56.arena. Luckily, they are all right but believable that can happen. It's

:50:57. > :51:00.great for the city to show we are strong and we can come back for it

:51:01. > :51:05.and the crowds have been amazing. Absolutely fantastic. It's great to

:51:06. > :51:11.see you out here. Thank you very much.

:51:12. > :51:17.Johnny is one of many finishing behind us here on Deansgate. I have

:51:18. > :51:21.seen a very good friend of mine, I will give him some stick afterwards

:51:22. > :51:25.but it did not look like a happy face as he made his way down the

:51:26. > :51:29.finish line. Will, I will call you afterwards!

:51:30. > :51:34.Paula Radcliffe and Brendan Foster here. You have seen is from start to

:51:35. > :51:39.finish and you have watched this race many times, this is a bit

:51:40. > :51:44.different and a bit special. It is always special but today, it is more

:51:45. > :51:48.special than ever. There is a reason it is called Greater Manchester and

:51:49. > :51:51.it has really shown today. The amount of people just coming to

:51:52. > :51:58.support, people he wanted to come and take part in the event just to

:51:59. > :52:03.show that human spirit fights on. It is personified in road racing so

:52:04. > :52:07.often, we see the camaraderie stories, and more so than ever it is

:52:08. > :52:12.showing that this is a spirit that will always fight on. At the start

:52:13. > :52:16.of the programme, we knew it was in the hands of the council, but they

:52:17. > :52:17.gave you the go and you knew that this was the spirit that would

:52:18. > :52:25.changing. Only because it is Manchester and

:52:26. > :52:30.the people have been amazing all week and well led by the civic

:52:31. > :52:35.authorities and Sir Richard Leese has been magnificent. The response

:52:36. > :52:40.of the city, the people of the city have been right behind him following

:52:41. > :52:46.him and saying all week, we are coming, we are coming. We provide a

:52:47. > :52:50.stage and the people of Manchester have occupied this stage

:52:51. > :52:53.unbelievably well. Haven't they just? One other guy pounding the

:52:54. > :53:00.streets of Manchester blossom time is Anthony Crolla. How was that as

:53:01. > :53:07.an experience? Your cousin was affected by the events in Manchester

:53:08. > :53:10.on Monday night. And running through here with your boxing career. And

:53:11. > :53:15.thousands of amazing people in Manchester, this must have been an

:53:16. > :53:22.amazing experience? Brilliant, I did not think it could surpass last year

:53:23. > :53:25.but it really has done. The last one kilometre, we had the crowd, a

:53:26. > :53:30.brilliant experience. It big she so proud to be a Mancunian. You are not

:53:31. > :53:37.competitive at all, I'm sure, who had the best time? I think Scott had

:53:38. > :53:41.the fastest time. My excuse was I was running with my mate and making

:53:42. > :53:50.sure he finished. Great team effort and more importantly money raised

:53:51. > :53:54.for important causes. Just a word on Tirunesh Dibaba, another masterclass

:53:55. > :53:58.and it was key for her to be here. Yes, she really wanted to be here,

:53:59. > :54:02.she loves the city of Manchester and she had a textbook demonstration

:54:03. > :54:08.display, dominating the race from start to finish, in contrast to the

:54:09. > :54:11.men's race where we saw a much greater battle and it was the person

:54:12. > :54:16.who wanted it more at the end who triumphed, Dathan Ritzenhein. I'm

:54:17. > :54:22.sure everybody has very different memories of today but it will be

:54:23. > :54:27.back again next year, just as good, if not better, because this event

:54:28. > :54:31.just keeps going. You can't hold back the great city of Manchester. I

:54:32. > :54:37.am so proud this event is in the city and so proud of the reaction

:54:38. > :54:40.and proud of the people who have responded, it is fantastic. And

:54:41. > :54:44.Tirunesh Dibaba, the greatest female athlete, three times Olympic

:54:45. > :54:50.champion, coming here. Everybody is nervous and has -- in anticipation

:54:51. > :54:55.of what may happen, but they came here and they showed their strength.

:54:56. > :55:01.And Manchester won. It really did, it's perfect way to summarise. So

:55:02. > :55:09.good to see all of you. Denise. Shattered! It is our very first

:55:10. > :55:15.official 10k. Best time as well. Only running six months. And you are

:55:16. > :55:23.here. And we are both Nannes, running for our grandchildren.

:55:24. > :55:28.Never? Absolutely. The shock of U2 coming up arm in arm was just so

:55:29. > :55:32.beautiful, but it really echoes what it is about -- the picture of you

:55:33. > :55:37.both coming up arm in arm. It has been a brilliant day. We are doing

:55:38. > :55:41.it for Cancer Research, we lost our colleague last year. We have raised

:55:42. > :55:47.about ?600 for Cancer Research. It is all good. It made my day seemed

:55:48. > :55:58.you! It has made my day seemed you, enjoy it. Thank you, we will do.

:55:59. > :56:07.Naughty nannies coming two! Well done. Thank you.

:56:08. > :56:12.We are back at the start and I am with JJ and I have studied here

:56:13. > :56:19.before a couple of times and it is always emotional. But today, being a

:56:20. > :56:23.spectator, you really get a sense of the massive human endeavour we have

:56:24. > :56:28.been watching. It is a very special day and I feel so honoured to be

:56:29. > :56:31.right in the heart of it. The crowds have been fantastic. I have not had

:56:32. > :56:36.much experience of Manchester before, and have lived here four

:56:37. > :56:40.months, and I have had the biggest welcome in the city. For anybody who

:56:41. > :56:46.does not know Manchester well, you are getting to see just how special

:56:47. > :56:50.this places. It is six years since you yourself were injured in an

:56:51. > :56:58.explosion. It has got to bring a special poignancy. It is a difficult

:56:59. > :57:02.weekend for me. There is an idea of celebration that I made it and I

:57:03. > :57:06.know others were not so fortunate. It was a rebirth this happening to

:57:07. > :57:09.me and I came back stronger and everybody involved and I mean the

:57:10. > :57:14.entire city and the entire area will come back stronger from this. On

:57:15. > :57:19.that positive message, thank you very much indeed. What I have really

:57:20. > :57:24.felt, we have all been here, the runners, the spectators, just to

:57:25. > :57:32.stand up and be counted as part of this amazing experience of today.

:57:33. > :57:41.I couldn't agree more, Louise. As we have seen, thousands more making

:57:42. > :57:46.their way over the finish line. And we have got John Bishop. 24 hours

:57:47. > :57:50.ago coming you decided you would be here. Just describe what this

:57:51. > :57:55.last... The atmosphere all the way around, I did this run ten years ago

:57:56. > :57:59.and there was not the number of people to support, the passion.

:58:00. > :58:03.Today has done what it was meant to do, it has made a statement to say

:58:04. > :58:09.this is what we are about, this is what Manchester is about and what we

:58:10. > :58:15.are about. A guy from Liverpool, proud North West man who knows

:58:16. > :58:18.Manchester inside out, it has been really, you personify what this is

:58:19. > :58:22.all about. Especially how quickly you came in. Bentley so much. They

:58:23. > :58:29.do so much to everybody for watching. It has been a special

:58:30. > :59:21.occasion. Unity is what it has all been about. Have a happy Sunday.

:59:22. > :59:24.We are Manchester. We are Manchester.
