:00:08. > :00:14.Hello and welcome to highlights of the 2017 Great Manchester Run. This

:00:15. > :00:18.city has been in the heart of the nation and Sony parts of the world

:00:19. > :00:25.this week. Today, 35,000 people took to the streets after what has been a

:00:26. > :00:30.terrible and heartbreaking week. We have races for kids, a half

:00:31. > :00:34.marathon, and a ten K all taking place. And many runners taking with

:00:35. > :00:42.him -- with them words spoken by local poet Tony Walsh.

:00:43. > :00:49.This is the place in the north-west of England. It's ace. It's the best.

:00:50. > :00:54.The songs that we sing set the whole planet shaking. Our inventions are

:00:55. > :00:58.legends. There is no tweet can't make. So we make brilliant music, we

:00:59. > :01:03.make brilliant bands, we make goals that make souls. And we make things

:01:04. > :01:09.from steel. We make things from cotton. We make something rotten.

:01:10. > :01:13.And we make you a whole. We make you feel welcome. We make something

:01:14. > :01:20.happen, we can seem to help it. And if you're looking for a history,

:01:21. > :01:24.then yes, we have well. But the Manchester way is to make it

:01:25. > :01:30.yourself. And this is the place where we first played as kids. And

:01:31. > :01:37.this is the place where our folks came to work, where they struggled.

:01:38. > :01:43.They hurt in the dirt. They built a us a city. They built awesome this

:01:44. > :01:48.-- these towns. So this is the place. Some are born here, some

:01:49. > :01:53.drawn here. But we all call it home. They will never defeat all the

:01:54. > :01:57.dreamers and schemers who team through these streets, because this

:01:58. > :02:02.is a place that has been so -- through some hard times. Depressions

:02:03. > :02:15.and dark times. But we keep fighting back. Northern grit, Northern wit.

:02:16. > :02:19.In the streets of our city. We don't want your pity. Because this is the

:02:20. > :02:26.place where we stand strong together with a smile on our face. Mancunians

:02:27. > :02:30.forever. This is the place in our hearts, in our homes. Because this

:02:31. > :02:36.is the place that is a part of our bones. Because Manchester gives 's

:02:37. > :02:45.strength from the facts. This is the place. We should give something

:02:46. > :02:51.back. Always remember... Never forget... Forever Manchester. Choose

:02:52. > :03:44.love. Today was all about a city trying to

:03:45. > :03:49.somehow come to terms with what has happened. To heal and to begin that

:03:50. > :03:54.process of getting life back to normal. I'm with Alice. This is your

:03:55. > :04:02.third attempt. Is there a different energy in air? Definitely. It is

:04:03. > :04:05.quite emotional. The Mancunian spirit is really strong. I'm looking

:04:06. > :04:09.forward to this. I will be thinking of the 22 and their grieving

:04:10. > :04:14.families. And my city, how we have all pulled together. Was ever a part

:04:15. > :04:19.of you that thought about not coming? I came from London. I was

:04:20. > :04:24.worried about my family coming to support. They are tiny babies. But I

:04:25. > :04:28.believe in my city. We are strong together. We need to be here for

:04:29. > :04:33.each other. Good luck. Make your family proud. Kim Calpe --

:04:34. > :04:38.Cian Collins, I know you're not running. What are you doing here?

:04:39. > :04:42.I'm showing my support and I'm going to start a few races. It will be

:04:43. > :04:48.interesting being on the starting side and not be running side. You

:04:49. > :04:53.are here on Friday. The atmosphere was incredible. What will it be like

:04:54. > :04:57.today? It will be amazing, regardless. The fans are showing

:04:58. > :05:01.support. Everybody is here. We're making sure we stand firm and be

:05:02. > :05:05.strong for Manchester. It is important the athletes came as well.

:05:06. > :05:10.They really wanted to compete? Definitely. We don't want to be in

:05:11. > :05:15.the streets running by ourselves with nobody to support. We are happy

:05:16. > :05:20.the supporters came. We will do our best. The atmosphere is incredible.

:05:21. > :05:24.The athletes and runners looking forward to seeing you? Definitely.

:05:25. > :05:29.Manchester is doing such a great job. We love this event. I hope it

:05:30. > :05:32.will be here for many more years to come across. Great to see you, as

:05:33. > :05:41.always. Thank you. I am here with the

:05:42. > :05:45.outgoing Lord Mayor. And in coming, now the new mayor of Manchester,

:05:46. > :05:49.Andy Burnham. I would start with you, Andy. It is quite an

:05:50. > :05:54.extraordinary day to be here in Manchester, isn't it? It is an

:05:55. > :05:57.extraordinary day to be here. This is the spirit of Manchester you can

:05:58. > :06:01.feel coming through the people. They are sending the message to the

:06:02. > :06:05.terrorist, to the extremists, you will not beat us. You will not

:06:06. > :06:10.change what we are, you will not change what we do. We will move

:06:11. > :06:14.forward together. It has been an exceptionally difficult week for

:06:15. > :06:20.everybody. We will get through it and go forward together. Carl, you

:06:21. > :06:27.are very fond of this city? Yes, this is the 15th year of the actual

:06:28. > :06:32.run. It brings the crowds out. But also the different charities. I was

:06:33. > :06:36.initially running for the Lord Mayors charity and Andy was running

:06:37. > :06:41.for the homeless charity. It seemed more poignant for everybody to come

:06:42. > :06:47.together to raise money for the fund. With the red Cross and the

:06:48. > :06:52.Manchester News. Until yesterday there was ?5.7 million raised.

:06:53. > :06:57.Everybody has got their own reasons for running. I just think this was

:06:58. > :07:02.really important. So many people came to me and said they were

:07:03. > :07:08.running it as a fun run. But now they are raising money as well. That

:07:09. > :07:12.is what brings the city together. There are two very different things

:07:13. > :07:19.going on in the city today. At St Ann's Square there is still a place

:07:20. > :07:23.for moments of quiet? Yes. People are responding in the way they want

:07:24. > :07:27.to respond. Everybody is feeling the benefit of the togetherness, being

:07:28. > :07:31.with each other. That is really helping people through what is a

:07:32. > :07:37.difficult time. Obviously next week we have to move on again. We need to

:07:38. > :07:40.start talking about how we go forward. How we work together to

:07:41. > :07:45.tackle the extremism there is in our society. What do it in a way that is

:07:46. > :07:50.true to Manchester, which is about not letting the terrorists divide

:07:51. > :07:55.us. We have to hold onto the spirit of this week. Everybody behind us

:07:56. > :08:02.will have made their own individual decisions about why they are here. I

:08:03. > :08:08.know. I think they're making a point of being here. Last night, young

:08:09. > :08:13.people made a statement. They are saying, you will not change us. That

:08:14. > :08:20.is such a powerful message to send out. An amazing atmosphere. What are

:08:21. > :08:28.you expecting? Timewise expecting about 52, 50 five. You can hear a

:08:29. > :08:35.heavy cold. I'm getting a politician's excuse in first! I

:08:36. > :08:38.cannot believe I'm hearing this. You can! How many politicians have you

:08:39. > :08:45.interviewed over the years? I will give it my best. We are hoping for

:08:46. > :08:50.smiles today. Not tears. I think there will be a mixture. Emotions

:08:51. > :08:54.will come out. That is a good thing. This is the first time for many

:08:55. > :08:57.people. A lot of people have been here since Tuesday morning. This is

:08:58. > :09:01.the first time a lot of people have come to the city since Monday night

:09:02. > :09:06.to show their defiance, and also to see what it is about. That is really

:09:07. > :09:10.important, that everybody has come together and we are united. I can't

:09:11. > :09:15.speak to you any more because you have a restaurant. I will go back to

:09:16. > :09:20.JJ. He is in the crowds with summary different people.

:09:21. > :09:23.I'm with some of the guys from Chorlton runners. You are obviously

:09:24. > :09:31.local to this. This must be an important occasion today?

:09:32. > :09:35.Absolutely. It has cut home this weekend. We are here in solidarity.

:09:36. > :09:39.We are doing what we love. We will carry on with life as normal. It is

:09:40. > :09:44.really important. We are going to run proud. Absolutely. Will you be

:09:45. > :09:49.running together are going for a personal times? We might start off

:09:50. > :09:54.together. I'm not sure how we will finish, to be honest! We will give

:09:55. > :09:59.it a go. There is a particularly special energy around here today,

:10:00. > :10:04.isn't there? There certainly is. With all the emotions and everything

:10:05. > :10:12.through this week. We are all local. It means so much. Yeah. It will be

:10:13. > :10:17.an emotional day. I take it there was no part of you that thought

:10:18. > :10:23.about not coming today? Not at all, no. We are here in solidarity to

:10:24. > :10:26.give out a message to everybody. We can't let things like this stop you

:10:27. > :10:32.living your normal life. You just can't allow it. Best of luck today.

:10:33. > :10:34.Hopefully you will finish together. I'm sure you will be cheering each

:10:35. > :10:42.other on. Regardless.

:10:43. > :10:50.The klaxons sound and away they go. The elite women's race gets under

:10:51. > :10:56.way. The roads are clear. Big crowds expected. We can see them ourselves.

:10:57. > :11:05.All the way along this route they will be cheered. The masses and the

:11:06. > :11:10.senior men will go off in 15 minutes. Good morning to Paula

:11:11. > :11:15.Radcliffe. Good morning. I keep saying good morning but it is

:11:16. > :11:19.afternoon. Good afternoon, Paula. Good afternoon. Good afternoon

:11:20. > :11:26.everybody. Especially for the people out there waiting to support the

:11:27. > :11:32.runners around this course. To complete this event and this run and

:11:33. > :11:38.to get on with what makes us all show that we are going to carry on.

:11:39. > :11:44.And just to show that life goes on and to show that spirit. Katrina

:11:45. > :11:49.Wootton showing some of that fighting spirit to go with Tirunesh

:11:50. > :11:55.Dibaba. She is very much expected to run away with this race. But Katrina

:11:56. > :12:02.Wootton in good shape. An old club mate of mine from a long time ago.

:12:03. > :12:07.She raced very well at Highgate in the British ten kilometre trial.

:12:08. > :12:11.Just missed the qualifying time. She qualified for the European Cup in

:12:12. > :12:15.Minsk later this month. She will be hoping to improve on the time. And

:12:16. > :12:22.probably will not be aiming to stay with Tirunesh Dibaba for a very

:12:23. > :12:26.long. As we look at the course. It is the familiar route. Hats off

:12:27. > :12:30.to everybody. We will talk about more of this in the mass races. It

:12:31. > :12:36.has been a massive logistical exercise to make sure the event goes

:12:37. > :12:39.ahead. It is the same route. Some slight changes around Old Trafford

:12:40. > :12:45.for the masses. That is where they know they have reached halfway. They

:12:46. > :12:51.turned back around the Salford quays area, Media City across the way. And

:12:52. > :12:57.then when they come back to Mancunian Way, they see the others

:12:58. > :13:02.going in the opposite direction. 35,000 people. Not everybody can be

:13:03. > :13:04.on the course at the same time. Those roads become absolutely

:13:05. > :13:11.covered with runners for the duration of the afternoon. They

:13:12. > :13:15.finished Indians get. Where we did have the city games. We saw Cian

:13:16. > :13:22.Collins at the start. Great to see them. Friday was emotional. It was a

:13:23. > :13:26.great afternoon. Many of the elite athletes said how much they enjoyed

:13:27. > :13:30.being here, including Tirunesh Dibaba.

:13:31. > :13:37.More of the elite women shortly. Who are you running for? We're running

:13:38. > :13:43.for men today. -- amen. This is my mum's first race. We're here to

:13:44. > :13:48.support. The cancer charity is a personal one for us. We started

:13:49. > :13:54.doing the Manchester runabout four years ago. It is a personal day. The

:13:55. > :14:00.charity is close to our hearts. So mum... You don't look like a mum!

:14:01. > :14:04.Are you feeling nervous? Not yet, I think there will be very shortly

:14:05. > :14:10.when it starts. Batman said you are a superhero. I'll be all right then.

:14:11. > :14:12.He will help me out. I'm looking forward to it. It'll be a challenge.

:14:13. > :14:23.I am looking forward to it really. And raising money for this charity?

:14:24. > :14:30.Definitely. They're going to spur you on, these super giants? We will

:14:31. > :14:36.try. We will try and keep up. If we can keep up. We might have to fly

:14:37. > :14:41.from time to time. It is great to be part of this. Yes it is always

:14:42. > :14:46.fantastic. With all that's happened, still the people are out and you can

:14:47. > :14:57.feel the love of it all, it is great, a great crowd as ever. Enjoy.

:14:58. > :15:02.It is heart-stopping to look up this beautiful street and see many

:15:03. > :15:08.thousands of people behind us. All waiting and I know having done this

:15:09. > :15:12.run myself a couple of times before, this a nervous moment, an exciting

:15:13. > :15:17.moment. But every single person you can see has made their own

:15:18. > :15:22.individual decision. When they woke up this morning, to come out and

:15:23. > :15:27.less than a week after that horrific attack, to come out here on to the

:15:28. > :15:31.streets of Manchester and it is really, it is a very poignant and in

:15:32. > :15:38.different parts of this city, there are different things going on. In St

:15:39. > :15:42.Ann's Square, there is quiet and contemplation and still people in

:15:43. > :15:48.tears this morning as they go there to pay tribute to the victims. I'm

:15:49. > :15:54.going to tell you what is going to happen. There is going to be a

:15:55. > :15:58.minute's silence before every single wave. We are going to take that

:15:59. > :16:05.minute's silence and stay with the runners as they do that and hear the

:16:06. > :16:14.words from Tony Walsh the poet. He is reading a poem called Do

:16:15. > :16:16.Something. I will leave you with the minute's silence for the victims of

:16:17. > :17:46.the attack. As we know, as we have shown the

:17:47. > :17:53.world, this is the place where we do something. Do something. To show

:17:54. > :17:58.them what you're made of. Do something you've never done before.

:17:59. > :18:06.Do something to beat what you're afraid of. Do something to make your

:18:07. > :18:11.spirit soar. Do something to get your heartbeat pounding, pounding,

:18:12. > :18:16.pounding. Do something with all your heart and soul and rock and roll and

:18:17. > :18:24.do something to show we are astounding. Do something and this is

:18:25. > :18:30.how we roll. Do something to match a city's greatness. Do something

:18:31. > :18:36.through sunshine and through rain. Do something to stay, we need to

:18:37. > :18:40.hate less. Do something through courage and through pain. Do

:18:41. > :18:47.something for someone that you care for. Do something to help out with

:18:48. > :18:53.the cost. Do something for someone that you there for. Do something for

:18:54. > :19:00.someone that you've lost. Do something to tell someone you love

:19:01. > :19:04.them. Do something for someone who's gone. Do something for those with

:19:05. > :19:10.none above them. Do something for someone who lives on. Do something

:19:11. > :19:17.to stand out from the crowd and do something to keep a dream alive. Do

:19:18. > :19:23.something to make a city proud. And do something to shout, hope will

:19:24. > :19:29.survive. Do something to show you don't surrender. We don't surrender.

:19:30. > :19:36.Do something for those we owe a debt, we thank you. Do something a

:19:37. > :19:42.city will remember. Do something the world will not forget. Do something

:19:43. > :19:49.for this great city's story. Do something and show them how it's

:19:50. > :19:58.done. Do something for love. In all its glory. Do something the great

:19:59. > :20:02.Manchester, do something for Great Manchester, do something the Great

:20:03. > :20:09.Manchester Run and make it live forever! Do something, the great

:20:10. > :20:22.Manchester run, choose love, have a fantastic Manchester day. Thank you.

:20:23. > :20:28.Ladies and gentlemen Tony Walsh. AKA Longfella. Inspiring words and a lot

:20:29. > :20:32.has been said about the resolve of the people of Manchester. Now it is

:20:33. > :20:35.their chance to show their unity and their determination to carry on. It

:20:36. > :20:40.will begin one step at a time. But they will move forward and today

:20:41. > :20:47.they all move forward together. Individually, but as one. It is all

:20:48. > :20:50.about the 35,000 taking part and the rest of city. But they will

:20:51. > :20:54.appreciate the elite athletes at the front. Here we go, the Great

:20:55. > :21:21.Manchester Run. There will be an outpouring of

:21:22. > :21:24.emotion at the end for most people. For the next ten kilometres it is a

:21:25. > :21:30.chance for them to reflect and for everybody watching. But it is also a

:21:31. > :21:34.chance to show what think city is about, show what it's made of. Show

:21:35. > :21:39.what its people are about. As we have been saying all morning, it's

:21:40. > :21:48.simply incredible that so many have turned up here today. They have not

:21:49. > :21:53.been cowed by events. They're of course respectful and remember all

:21:54. > :21:58.of those who suffered so tragically. And the city has been an inspiring

:21:59. > :22:06.place to be over the last two days or so. Of course they're not all

:22:07. > :22:10.Mancunians. They have come from around the UK and some have come

:22:11. > :22:16.from different parts of world as well. Where we will be of course

:22:17. > :22:20.concentrating on the masses today. But the elite racers, we shouldn't

:22:21. > :22:25.ignore the fact that we have here in Tirunesh Dibaba one of the greatest,

:22:26. > :22:29.if not the greatest female distance runner of all time and she is going

:22:30. > :22:35.quick. That is the time she went through when she set the record

:22:36. > :22:41.here, the record being 30. 49. She did speed up in the second part on

:22:42. > :22:52.that occasion. She started crick -- quick on this day. Katrina Wootton

:22:53. > :22:58.has dropped back. Tirunesh Dibaba has the streets to herself. Katrina

:22:59. > :23:02.Wootton a little lonely in second. She will have to watch for those

:23:03. > :23:09.behind. They're about 20 seconds behind. This is the front of men's

:23:10. > :23:23.race. That is Dathan Ritzenhein, the very good American. Bernard Lagat

:23:24. > :23:27.there. And Wilson Kipsang, he won the Tokyo marathon this year. He

:23:28. > :23:34.won't be contesting the World Championships. So that kilometre,

:23:35. > :23:40.the second one is 2.50. They're not hanging around. And Dathan

:23:41. > :23:46.Ritzenhein deciding the good policy for him is to get out there and lead

:23:47. > :23:54.this. Tirunesh Dibaba, the marathon is where her sights are these days.

:23:55. > :24:03.However, she is still a real talent to be reckoned with on the roads as

:24:04. > :24:07.well over 10 kilometres. But te vents goes on as -- but the event

:24:08. > :24:13.goes on as it has done over the last few years. An event which has grown

:24:14. > :24:19.with the city and has always shown off the best of Manchester. But

:24:20. > :24:25.today more so than ever. In the men's race, it is as you were, those

:24:26. > :24:31.five still at the front. Birmingham doing his stint with Dathan

:24:32. > :24:36.Ritzenhein. Kipsang going well. Lagat in the group. Andy Vernon has

:24:37. > :24:41.dropped off. He will be running in a couple of weeks to try and get to

:24:42. > :24:46.10,000 qualifying time for the World Championships. In the women's race

:24:47. > :24:53.it is all about Tirunesh Dibaba. She has been getting quick tore the end

:24:54. > :24:56.-- quicker towards the end. She is into last kilometre and it won't be

:24:57. > :25:02.long before she can see the railway bridge that we are on the opposite

:25:03. > :25:07.side of on Deansgate. That is about 200 metres to go. It has been

:25:08. > :25:13.another display from Tirunesh Dibaba, Paula, strong as ever, she

:25:14. > :25:17.is clicking along going well. We said she might feel a bit like she

:25:18. > :25:22.is on a training run. She looks a bit like she is on a training run.

:25:23. > :25:27.She doesn't look like she is close to maximum effort f you contrast her

:25:28. > :25:31.style and expression with the closing stages of London marathon

:25:32. > :25:36.when she was struggling and pushing on. It is very different. She has

:25:37. > :25:45.recovered well from that and put on a text book display of how to bounce

:25:46. > :25:49.back. It is important to her to tick this off and to move on. To come

:25:50. > :25:54.here and support Manchester as well. But she will be now aiming for that

:25:55. > :25:58.finish line and she will have had a time in mind she would want to shoot

:25:59. > :26:01.close to. But the biggest thing was to get out and feel her legs were

:26:02. > :26:23.responding well. This is Kristel Dornay. The crowd

:26:24. > :26:27.are moving to the barriers to cheer Tirunesh Dibaba. She is a familiar

:26:28. > :26:33.sight here in Manchester. They are so pleased she is here. Tirunesh

:26:34. > :26:41.Dibaba sprinting home as she always manages to do. Still looking pretty

:26:42. > :26:48.fresh. She wins the Great Manchester 10K. Just outside 31 minutes. Maybe

:26:49. > :26:55.no more than a hard training run. But for anyone else that is world

:26:56. > :27:04.class. A smile from Tirunesh Dibaba and another superb performance from

:27:05. > :27:09.her. 31.03 the winning time. Now Dathan Ritzenhein, Mokoka and

:27:10. > :27:14.Bernard Lagat, the great 1,500 metres who is now enjoying racing on

:27:15. > :27:20.the roads and the longer distances. Doesn't have to worry about the

:27:21. > :27:25.speed. But if he is stilling hanging around at the end he will look to

:27:26. > :27:33.use that. Mokoka has not been running that well this winter, but

:27:34. > :27:38.he ran a good 12 K race in South Africa recently. It was better than

:27:39. > :27:44.the performances up to then. So he has been coming back into form.

:27:45. > :27:52.Dathan Ritzenhein won the American 25k Championship. An odd distance.

:27:53. > :27:55.His exploits in the marathon have been disappointing. He was a

:27:56. > :27:59.non-finisher in the American trials and in New York as well he didn't

:28:00. > :28:08.finish in October. So he has had a difficult year or so. He has shown

:28:09. > :28:11.potential and is probably the perfect half marathon runner and he

:28:12. > :28:16.has struggled to move up to the marathon distance. Suffered a lot

:28:17. > :28:20.with cramping, with getting his fuelling strat scombris right. But

:28:21. > :28:26.-- strategies right. But he's formidable racer over the 10

:28:27. > :28:30.kilometres and the half marathon. Started with early success in the

:28:31. > :28:35.world junior cross country Championships. In 2001 he was on the

:28:36. > :28:39.podium. And that was a huge break through. He has built on that for

:28:40. > :28:43.his career. But never quite been able to reflect that on the world

:28:44. > :28:53.stage at world Championship and Olympic level.

:28:54. > :29:02.Christelle Daunay ploddingly crowd. A great gesture from the. France has

:29:03. > :29:13.had so many atrocities to deal with. Remembered Nice. -- we all remember

:29:14. > :29:24.Nice of course. Daunay applauding the home crowd. Katrina Wootton as

:29:25. > :29:30.well. A tough race for Katrina out there having had a real go with

:29:31. > :29:41.Tirunesh Dibaba. Here is Gemma Steel. A pretty solid run. She

:29:42. > :29:45.finishes fifth in around 33.40. There has been a little bit of a

:29:46. > :29:56.break. Kip Sangwan first, then more cocoa. Ritzenhein is applying the

:29:57. > :30:03.pressure. Even though Bernard Lagat is in the twilight of his track

:30:04. > :30:09.career, he is just hovering. He is working hard. He knows every step.

:30:10. > :30:15.It is moving into his territory. I will be surprised of Ritzenhein can

:30:16. > :30:19.break him in the last 200 metres. Ritzenhein isn't a slouch. It is

:30:20. > :30:23.just that Bernard Lagat is very fast. At the end of ten kilometres

:30:24. > :30:30.it is different on the road to finishing 1500 metres or 5000 metres

:30:31. > :30:34.on the track. He sees the nine kilometre marker. He knows he has

:30:35. > :30:37.got less than three minutes of running to try everything that he

:30:38. > :30:42.can, to throw everything he can add Bernard Lagat to shake him off and

:30:43. > :30:47.get a little bit of daylight. If he is sitting on his shoulder or moving

:30:48. > :30:55.alongside him coming along a straight on the instead, then

:30:56. > :31:06.Ritzenhein is in trouble. -- Stephen Mokoka is looking tired.

:31:07. > :31:14.The tall Australian hasn't raised that much in 2017. He is chasing

:31:15. > :31:21.down for a third. Look at this. Lagat can't hold on. Ritzenhein has

:31:22. > :31:27.broken him. That is reward for Ritzenhein. He has not got this one

:31:28. > :31:37.yet. Lagat is still fighting hard. Look at the determination on his

:31:38. > :31:40.face. He is working hard. You can see how much this means to him. He

:31:41. > :31:45.has had a turbulent last couple of weeks. He has had a lot of things

:31:46. > :31:50.going on back in the US. He is probably happy to come here to let

:31:51. > :31:58.his feet and legs do the talking, to raise hard and run away from that

:31:59. > :32:02.and celebrated with a strong run. Dayton Ritzenhein of the USA, he

:32:03. > :32:09.hasn't had a lot to cheer in the last 12 months. He had a big win in

:32:10. > :32:14.the American road championships. He has Greater Manchester on this

:32:15. > :32:16.emotional day. What a win it is going to be framed. He keeps

:32:17. > :32:24.checking behind because he is expecting Lagat to catch him. He

:32:25. > :32:32.will not do that. The American wins. Ritzenhein is this your's champion.

:32:33. > :32:39.28.06 the winning time. A good frontrunning performance. Bernard

:32:40. > :32:43.Lagat finishes second. One better than last year. He thought he would

:32:44. > :32:48.be able to hang on for the kick but he couldn't. Stephen Mokoka hangs

:32:49. > :32:56.over a third. Then Birmingham. Then Wilson Kipsang.

:32:57. > :33:00.When the elites had finished, the day belonged to the masses.

:33:01. > :33:04.Undeterred by the events of the week, thousands turned out to run

:33:05. > :33:11.and to support. And of course they did Manchester proud.

:33:12. > :33:19.I want to introduce you to Allah Caron. How was it running? Good. It

:33:20. > :33:30.was fantastic. How old are you? Nine. You have run it four times to

:33:31. > :33:34.yes I had. I want to help the Children's Hospital and make people

:33:35. > :33:40.proud. You spent lots of time in hospital yourself. Your mum is here

:33:41. > :33:50.and finally you have persuaded her to run, haven't you? I am doing the

:33:51. > :33:55.ten kilometres. Have you run before? No. This will be my first time. I'm

:33:56. > :33:58.hoping I can get myself to the finish line. I'm sure the atmosphere

:33:59. > :34:04.and the adrenaline will get the cross that line. Tell me about the

:34:05. > :34:09.hospital you are raising money for? Manchester Children's Hospital. Ella

:34:10. > :34:15.has been treated there since she was born. She will need it all the way

:34:16. > :34:19.through. It was our second home. Without it she wouldn't be here.

:34:20. > :34:25.Thank you doesn't seem enough. Sam Lee victims were treated there after

:34:26. > :34:30.Monday. I have seen how the doctors can perform in emergency. They do

:34:31. > :34:37.amazing work. They stopped that number rising higher, I think. Show

:34:38. > :34:43.everybody your medal. Look at that. It's fantastic, isn't it? You're

:34:44. > :34:52.going to be a starter, aren't you? Yes, I am. Good luck and good luck

:34:53. > :34:58.to your mum. Good luck mum. And don't be nervous.

:34:59. > :35:08.Thank you. Sweet little girl. Manchester United

:35:09. > :35:20.play -- played their part in this traumatic week. And as ever, it is a

:35:21. > :35:23.fitting backdrop for this great sporting city the great people of

:35:24. > :35:31.this city again showing what they are all about.

:35:32. > :35:39.They will have fun out there as well. They will all be, I'm sure,

:35:40. > :35:45.thinking and remembering the events of this week. I think it has been

:35:46. > :35:51.interesting because I was in the USA when it happened. I think there was

:35:52. > :35:59.an initial, while surely there won't be an event. It is so good this went

:36:00. > :36:04.ahead. There was only a slight, can we do it? It was and should we do

:36:05. > :36:09.it, it is how do we do it? That was the biggest question. Of course, the

:36:10. > :36:15.security and making sure that everybody is safe. As you talked

:36:16. > :36:19.about earlier, everybody heals in their own way. Everybody carries on

:36:20. > :36:24.and moves on. We will always remember what happened. But life has

:36:25. > :36:30.to go on. Life hast to move on. We have to show that the human spirit

:36:31. > :36:34.is strong. For Sony people that is about coming out here and running,

:36:35. > :36:40.feeling that heartbeat, feeling the city alive with you along the route

:36:41. > :36:44.and coming together in this way. Along the roads in any Road race

:36:45. > :36:48.there is camaraderie and human stories. But I think more than ever

:36:49. > :36:51.today and this weekend, that will be felt in so many cities, but

:36:52. > :37:02.particularly on the streets of Manchester.

:37:03. > :37:05.Louise enjoying her vantage point. She knows what the city is all

:37:06. > :37:19.about. Not a bad runner herself, of course. She has done triathlons. I

:37:20. > :37:24.was sitting in the Square yesterday. Tony Walsh mentioned it earlier. It

:37:25. > :37:29.was really an inspiring place to be. Quiet respect. Some families were

:37:30. > :37:35.there. That floral tribute is growing and will continue to grow.

:37:36. > :37:50.But today it is a tribute of a different type.

:37:51. > :37:56.Young and old, they have come to take part and they have, go to

:37:57. > :38:01.cheer. I have never seen summary people out watching this event. It

:38:02. > :38:07.has always been popular but it is so good to see so many out.

:38:08. > :38:11.As well as coming together to run for their city today, everyone has a

:38:12. > :38:16.personal reason to be here as well. These are just a few of their

:38:17. > :38:22.stories. I'm running for a mental health

:38:23. > :38:27.charity. That is because I have had my own battles with mental health in

:38:28. > :38:30.the past, starting from when I was 11 years old. That sort of spiralled

:38:31. > :38:37.into five years of self harm and depression. It culminated in a few

:38:38. > :38:44.suicide attempts. The final one was the point at which I thought, this

:38:45. > :38:48.really isn't OK. That feeling of you are ready to leave everything and

:38:49. > :38:55.everyone behind, it's actually quite scary to know that I was at that

:38:56. > :39:06.point where nothing at all mattered to me any more.

:39:07. > :39:11.I am 18. I am a blind runner in this year's Great Manchester Run. I

:39:12. > :39:14.basically want to give something back to the hospital for the amount

:39:15. > :39:20.of care and support they have given me and my family for the last 18

:39:21. > :39:25.years. They kind of give people the ability to be independent because

:39:26. > :39:30.site is such a factor. It is one of your main senses. They try and

:39:31. > :39:35.preserve that as much as they can. They give someone the opportunity to

:39:36. > :39:41.live their lives -- life to the max. See RPS is a chronic nerve pain

:39:42. > :39:49.condition. It is like having your legs are your arms or your hands in

:39:50. > :39:53.burning oil, nonstop. You want to scream. Every hour of the day you

:39:54. > :39:57.wanted to stop but it can't. There is nothing out there, there is no

:39:58. > :40:01.cure for this condition. This is what we need to change. When I cross

:40:02. > :40:05.that finish line I will have tears running down my face. I'm supporting

:40:06. > :40:15.everybody affected by this condition. That is why I do it. We

:40:16. > :40:17.are running for when you wish upon a star, a charity that helps grant

:40:18. > :40:23.wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses. But we

:40:24. > :40:28.are doing it slightly different than quite a few people. We are doing it

:40:29. > :40:36.in a caterpillar. It is the longest caterpillar I have seen.

:40:37. > :40:41.That is what those guys are doing. It is so important. It is

:40:42. > :40:52.unbelievable. They are a great bunch of guys.

:40:53. > :40:57.Amazing. Realistically I know my cancer currently can't be cured. But

:40:58. > :41:02.I'm hoping by exercise I can day as well as possible for as long as

:41:03. > :41:04.possible. I'm actually running for an organisation called Pegasus

:41:05. > :41:10.riding for the disabled and every Sunday we teach kids and adults with

:41:11. > :41:13.disabilities how to ride horses. There is nothing quite like seeing a

:41:14. > :41:16.kid who has never ridden a horse before, whose parents are perhaps a

:41:17. > :41:21.little bit nervous about bringing them down, who may have severe

:41:22. > :41:26.disabilities, and then putting that child on a pony and seen the smile

:41:27. > :41:30.on their face. I can turn a up on a Sunday morning feeling grumpy and

:41:31. > :41:32.fed cup, and ten minutes into teaching a lesson I will not feel

:41:33. > :41:41.like that any more. And that is amazing.

:41:42. > :41:50.I'm with some of Helen's biggest fans. What an incredible woman she

:41:51. > :41:56.is. She is so incredible. We're totally inspired. She isn't thinking

:41:57. > :42:03.of herself. She is just thinking of children she can get riding. And see

:42:04. > :42:06.inspires more people. It is an act of selflessness that is so

:42:07. > :42:12.inspiring. What do you think today will mean for her? I think the whole

:42:13. > :42:15.day is just so emotional after everything that has happened

:42:16. > :42:20.anywhere. But going through the chemotherapy she has been going

:42:21. > :42:25.through and just being part of today, part of Manchester, it will

:42:26. > :42:30.been so much more. I know you said you did not want to speak. Put in

:42:31. > :42:34.context how amazing she is? Absolutely brilliant. This is the

:42:35. > :42:38.fourth one. It is the first one she has done with chemo. She had could

:42:39. > :42:42.have gone down the cancer rude but she has chosen not to. This is

:42:43. > :42:48.specifically for riding for a the disabled. This is someone who works

:42:49. > :42:54.full-time, who keeps chickens and horses, which is why, if we turn

:42:55. > :42:57.around, that was always the joke. When she is not busy doing something

:42:58. > :43:00.else, she is fighting crime at night.

:43:01. > :43:04.She is something else. I'm here with Tony Watt, who you will be familiar

:43:05. > :43:09.with, reading that incredible poem at the vigil. You have been reading

:43:10. > :43:16.another poem at the start. How has it been today? Very emotional. I am

:43:17. > :43:19.always trying to keep in mind why this is happening to me, why this is

:43:20. > :43:23.happening in Manchester. The reaction to the first poem has been

:43:24. > :43:28.incredible around the world. People give stopping me, they have tears in

:43:29. > :43:33.their eyes. I have a pome today written a couple of years ago. But

:43:34. > :43:37.as written with the other poem, lines gaining new residents, new

:43:38. > :43:43.meaning. It really does have new meaning. You are very clever with

:43:44. > :43:49.words and words can in some ways help, can't there? We looked at art

:43:50. > :43:55.and artists and musicians and poets and writers to say what the can't

:43:56. > :43:58.say ourselves. This city is famous for its sport, and for its

:43:59. > :44:04.community. But also for arts and abuse against poultry. Artists say

:44:05. > :44:09.the big things for us. We have been standing here and we have seen three

:44:10. > :44:13.waves go off so far. On every single person I have seen, even where we

:44:14. > :44:18.are now, there are smiles at the start of what is something special

:44:19. > :44:24.for each individual person. I been changing the words of my poem until

:44:25. > :44:28.I stepped on the podium. I had a line at the end, we will fight their

:44:29. > :44:33.fear with fun. I changed it at the last minute. If we are choosing

:44:34. > :44:38.love, we're rejecting hatred and fear and do it with a smile on our

:44:39. > :44:43.faces. They are doing that. Thank you. And thank you for your words.

:44:44. > :45:01.Now we have a celebrity finisher. We have a couple of finishers. We have

:45:02. > :45:06.Peter Hooke. Or Peter Ook. You lost an H. I lost it a long time ago.

:45:07. > :45:11.Talk about the people who pulled you through. There was fantastic

:45:12. > :45:14.support. That is the most people I have seen and I have done eleven and

:45:15. > :45:21.I know the people are with us. I'm very pleased. From eleven to a

:45:22. > :45:26.debutant. What struck me was the number... He got in my head by

:45:27. > :45:31.saying he couldn't decide he needed the loo. I always seem to be

:45:32. > :45:34.interviewed by you about the toilet. But what struck me was the banners

:45:35. > :45:43.that just say, thank you. You want to say thank you back. Because the

:45:44. > :45:47.atmosphere is fantastic and more than pride and defiance, you can't

:45:48. > :45:51.sum it up. It is just a great atmosphere. Having done it eleven

:45:52. > :45:56.times, the emotions have been different. What was going through

:45:57. > :46:01.your head? You know, the atrocity is in your mind all the time and it has

:46:02. > :46:04.been, I went to St Ann's Square before and it just breaks your

:46:05. > :46:13.heart. I'm feeling very emotional. It has been a bad week. What you

:46:14. > :46:17.have been doing has been giving so much back. That what is they are

:46:18. > :46:22.doing. It is a day for all of us I think. Goodlike to them out -- good

:46:23. > :46:27.luck to them out there. A great cause they're raising money for and

:46:28. > :46:35.so many will have made plans in the weeks and months leading up to this

:46:36. > :46:40.and events to some extent taking over those, their own aspirations.

:46:41. > :46:46.But of course so important that they stick to those plans that they carry

:46:47. > :46:52.on with what that they were going to do. There is another group. They all

:46:53. > :47:01.look... Not quite sure what they are dressed as. A bit further away to be

:47:02. > :47:06.able to tell. They have been going just over an hour. They started with

:47:07. > :47:11.the first wave. 63 minutes as they are crossing the line in front of

:47:12. > :47:15.me. Many of these, the different colours they're wearing, the White

:47:16. > :47:19.Wave, the orange. They're all mingling together now. What this

:47:20. > :47:25.meant, this event was meant to be about. Always will be about. They

:47:26. > :47:34.will cock back in future years I'm sure. But they will of course

:47:35. > :47:37.remember 2017. I think Peter Hook was right, I have never seen so many

:47:38. > :47:44.people watching. You can see the crowds. There is some of the

:47:45. > :47:52.University group. 2,000 of them taking part. They will have plenty

:47:53. > :47:58.of support I'm sure. As was mentioned we had the half marathon

:47:59. > :48:06.today as well. I'm sure that event will continue to grow. The 10k in

:48:07. > :48:12.itself a massive challenge. As Louise mentioned plenty of people

:48:13. > :48:17.who is their first 10k, maybe they will move on to the half marathon.

:48:18. > :48:22.Still a few waves to go. I think 3 clock the last one. At the finish,

:48:23. > :48:27.it is starting to... Get a little bit crowded there as more and more

:48:28. > :48:45.people finish their day, finish their run. I'm at the finish, how

:48:46. > :48:49.are you feeling? Exhausted. I tried to go below 37. I will have to wait

:48:50. > :48:56.to see the times. It was a good atmosphere. I was trying to get on

:48:57. > :49:02.the 100. It was tough out there? Yes it is quite warm. The atmosphere

:49:03. > :49:07.is... A bit of a strange atmosphere with what happened. I used to teach

:49:08. > :49:12.in Manchester a few years ago and Molly was one of my student, there

:49:13. > :49:18.is some children at the school I used to teach at at the Arena, but

:49:19. > :49:21.luckily they're all right. But it great to show we're strong and we

:49:22. > :49:34.can come back and all the crowds have been amazing. Fantastic. Great

:49:35. > :49:38.to see you here. Thank you. Johnny one of many finishers coming through

:49:39. > :49:42.on Deansgate. I have seen one of my good friends actually. I will give

:49:43. > :49:48.him some stick after. But he didn't look like a happy face as he made

:49:49. > :49:57.his way down, Will. I will call you after! So many people. Paula and

:49:58. > :50:01.Brendan are here. Paula you have been here many times, this one a bit

:50:02. > :50:08.different? It is always special, but I think today it is more special

:50:09. > :50:11.than ever. There is a reason it is called Greater Manchester and it is

:50:12. > :50:15.shown there today. I think the amount of people just coming to

:50:16. > :50:20.support, people who wanted to come and take part in the event just to

:50:21. > :50:27.show that that human spirit fights on and it is personified in road

:50:28. > :50:32.racing we see the friendship stories, but it is showing this is a

:50:33. > :50:35.spirit that will always fight on. Brendan, we talked to you at the

:50:36. > :50:40.start and we knew it was in the hands of the council, but they gave

:50:41. > :50:43.you the go ahead and you knew this was the spirit that would shine

:50:44. > :50:48.through. Only because it is Manchester and the people have been

:50:49. > :50:55.amazing all week. They have been brilliantly led by the civic

:50:56. > :50:59.authorities and Sir Richard Leach has been magnificent, the response

:51:00. > :51:03.of city, he has been leading and the people have been behind him. They

:51:04. > :51:07.have been telling us all week, we are coming, even if the race is

:51:08. > :51:11.cancelled. We provide a stage and the people of Manchester have

:51:12. > :51:19.occupied the stage so well. One other guy who has been here pounding

:51:20. > :51:27.the streets, Anthony Crolla. Talk to us about how that was as an

:51:28. > :51:32.experience and I know your cousin was affected by the events on Monday

:51:33. > :51:35.and you're running with your boxing crew and thousands of people. It

:51:36. > :51:44.must have been an amazing experience? Brilliant. I didn't

:51:45. > :51:49.think it could surpass last year and the last K you got carried by the

:51:50. > :51:56.crowd. It was brilliant and makes you proud to be a Mancunian. You're

:51:57. > :52:01.not competitive at all, but who has the better time. Scott Quigg

:52:02. > :52:15.probably. My excuse was I was making sure my mate finished. But it is a

:52:16. > :52:20.good la but good money. For Tirunesh Dibaba it was important for her to

:52:21. > :52:24.be here? Yes, she loves the city of Manchester and she had her text book

:52:25. > :52:28.demonstration display out there. Dominated the race from start to

:52:29. > :52:33.finish. In stark contrast to the men's race where we saw a much

:52:34. > :52:40.greater battle and the person who wanted it more who won. I'm sure

:52:41. > :52:45.everybody has different memories of today. But it will be back again

:52:46. > :52:52.next year, Brendan, just as good, if not better, because this event just

:52:53. > :52:57.keeps going? You can't hold back the great city of Manchester. I'm so

:52:58. > :53:02.proud of reaction of city and the people who have responded and it is

:53:03. > :53:08.fantastic that Anthony is here and Tirunesh Dibaba, the greatest female

:53:09. > :53:10.athlete, three times Olympic champion, coming here. Everyone

:53:11. > :53:14.nervous about what may happen and what is going to happen. But they

:53:15. > :53:20.came here and showed their strength and Manchester won. It really did.

:53:21. > :53:31.Perfect way to sum it up. Thank you all. Denise. Oh! Shattered. It is

:53:32. > :53:39.our first official 10k. Best time as well. We only been running six

:53:40. > :53:43.months And you're here. And we are both Nannies running for your

:53:44. > :53:47.grandchildren. You're never. Absolutely. The shot of you two

:53:48. > :53:53.coming up there, arm in arm was beautiful. But it echo what is today

:53:54. > :54:02.is about. Definitely we have been emotional all day. It has been a

:54:03. > :54:08.brilliant day. Rah And we are running for cancer research after

:54:09. > :54:15.losing a colleague last year. All's good. It made my day seeing you.

:54:16. > :54:21.Enjoy it. Yes we will have a few gin and tonics. I could meet you.

:54:22. > :54:34.Naughty nannies. Thank you very much. Andy and quite rightly, wiping

:54:35. > :54:39.away the sweat. How are you feel? People probably think I don't make

:54:40. > :54:45.much sense in interviews, but I will make less. The body's drained. I

:54:46. > :54:50.just couldn't, all I had in my head is the mayor can't give up. So I had

:54:51. > :54:55.to finish. But it was hard. When you have so many people on the run and

:54:56. > :55:01.lining and supporting again. Considering what we had this week?

:55:02. > :55:05.How lucky am I to represent a place like this and people like these. It

:55:06. > :55:08.is just unbelievable. It has been the darkest time we have lived

:55:09. > :55:12.through, but I could not be more proud of the people of Manchester

:55:13. > :55:16.this week. They have shown the world what they're about. Togetherness,

:55:17. > :55:20.solidarity and it is a a message that we are not going to be beaten

:55:21. > :55:26.by the terrorists, we are not going to be changed, we are not going to

:55:27. > :55:30.let them alter our way of life. That is the best message we could send.

:55:31. > :55:34.As soon as it was decided it would go ahead, you had visions of this

:55:35. > :55:39.response? We were unsure if I'm honest. You always are. We were in

:55:40. > :55:43.the shock of what happened. Struggling to come to terms. But

:55:44. > :55:49.Manchester that is kind of place. You don't beat us easily. That is

:55:50. > :55:54.what we have shown. This vindicates it and people have come here, never

:55:55. > :55:58.mind been worried about coming here, they have made a point of it. That

:55:59. > :56:06.speaks volumes about the Manchester people. It is something we have

:56:07. > :56:09.enjoyed and you can say the mayor did complete the Great Manchester

:56:10. > :56:18.Run. Crawled around, but I did it. Thank you. We are back at the start

:56:19. > :56:24.with JJ I have stood at the start before and it is always very

:56:25. > :56:30.emotional. But today sort of being a spectator you get a sense of massive

:56:31. > :56:35.endeavour we have been watching. It is a special day and I feel honoured

:56:36. > :56:39.to have been in the heart of it. The crowds have been fantastic and I

:56:40. > :56:43.haven't had much ex-pianos of Manchester -- experience of

:56:44. > :56:46.Manchester and I have had the biggest welcome in this city and for

:56:47. > :56:50.anyone who doesn't know Manchester, this is it being beamed into your

:56:51. > :56:56.living room and you can see how special it is. It is six years since

:56:57. > :57:00.you were yourself injured in an explosion and it's got to bring a

:57:01. > :57:06.special poignancy. Yes this is a... It is a difficult weekend for me

:57:07. > :57:11.this one. There is an idea of celebration they made it and some of

:57:12. > :57:17.my friends were not so fortunate. This was a rebirth for me and I came

:57:18. > :57:22.back stronger and the whole area will come back stronger from this.

:57:23. > :57:27.On that positive message, thank you. And what I have felt as well we have

:57:28. > :57:32.been here and the runners have been here and the spectators, just to

:57:33. > :57:38.stand up and be counted as part of this I mazing experience that it has

:57:39. > :57:43.been today. What an incredible moving and special day. Thousands of

:57:44. > :57:46.people here filling the streets of Manchester in a statement of

:57:47. > :57:54.strength, resilience, unity and defiance. A memorable day for so

:57:55. > :58:01.many people but for right reasons. That is all we have got time for

:58:02. > :58:11.today from Manchester's Great run. # When your heart is broken and you

:58:12. > :58:13.need a helping love # When you're so much in love you don't know how much

:58:14. > :58:24.you can stand # Ten story love song # # It can

:58:25. > :58:46.take you higher # And I love you too! We are

:58:47. > :58:50.Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester.

:58:51. > :58:59.We are Manchester. We are Manchester. We are Manchester.

:59:00. > :59:04.In Japan, art and life are intrinsically connected.
