:00:48. > :00:55.Hello and welcome to the first of this year's coverage of the Diamond

:00:56. > :00:59.League on the BBC. It is an exciting year of athletics with all roads

:01:00. > :01:09.leading to London. Mo Farah coming to the line. He is going to win the

:01:10. > :01:13.500 metres. A new world record. A win for Usain Bolt, he is back in

:01:14. > :01:16.business. In August the capital city will host the World Championships

:01:17. > :01:21.for the very first time and it will be the last time we ever see Usain

:01:22. > :01:25.Bolt on the track. It will also be Mo Farah's farewell on the track but

:01:26. > :01:29.stars like Laura Muir will be hoping to shine. Whee Kim, week out,

:01:30. > :01:33.athletes will be hoping to prove their form on the Diamond League

:01:34. > :01:37.circuit. Let's kick off with highlights from last night's opening

:01:38. > :01:41.meet in Doha. Hello and welcome to Doha, Qatar,

:01:42. > :01:49.for the first IAAF Diamond League meeting of 2017. We start with a

:01:50. > :01:54.mouthwatering men's 400 metres. Good evening to Stuart Storey. Thank you,

:01:55. > :02:01.Steve. It is a good evening and a good line-up. There are 44 global

:02:02. > :02:09.medallists in this meet. There are 16 Olympic champions. It is a new

:02:10. > :02:13.scoring table. Karabo Sibanda of Botswana, fourth in the Olympic

:02:14. > :02:19.final. He is only 18. Inspired he says by Usain Bolt, as so many

:02:20. > :02:28.others have been. LaShawn Merritt of the United States has won this race

:02:29. > :02:32.three times. A real talent. He won the race in the United States

:02:33. > :02:36.recently in cold conditions. Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas, he has the

:02:37. > :02:44.early-season's fastest time in this field. That was set in grenade.

:02:45. > :02:50.Plainly McKee of the United States, a couple of times world champion.

:02:51. > :03:14.His success has mainly come in the relays -- Tony McQuay.

:03:15. > :03:35.Let's see who really put the pedal down. The Norwood is really up.

:03:36. > :03:40.Maslak is usual going very strong. Steven Gardiner and Cheney McKee

:03:41. > :03:47.making headway. This is going to be very tight. What has the big man got

:03:48. > :03:51.here? Lane three, Steven Gardiner, the fastest man in the field on

:03:52. > :04:05.paper. He leads them home here ahead of LaShawn merit. It was a very,

:04:06. > :04:11.very good race. So, Steven Gardiner really hung on to the form that he

:04:12. > :04:15.showed in Saint George in Grenada with that 44.2 six. Remember,

:04:16. > :04:22.Olympic bronze-medallist in the Olympic four by four last year.

:04:23. > :04:31.LaShawn Merritt has already raised Karabo Sibanda. Steven Gardiner was

:04:32. > :04:36.very clever. He accelerated down the back straight, through 200 metres,

:04:37. > :04:45.down the top end, opened up the lead on LaShawn Merritt. He moves away to

:04:46. > :04:50.try and catch Steven Gardiner. With those long legs, although he was

:04:51. > :04:59.tarring a little bit, he is in superb form. This guy is a real

:05:00. > :05:02.talent. Thomas Rohler of Germany, the

:05:03. > :05:09.Olympic champion. A second round throw.

:05:10. > :05:18.That is a little bit better, beyond the 85-metre line. Still more to

:05:19. > :05:28.come looking at him. Clearly, his coaching staff will be pleased with

:05:29. > :05:39.all of that. 85.52. That is a superb start and he takes the lead.

:05:40. > :05:46.Johannes Vetter a few minutes ago. Just finding his way. He is young in

:05:47. > :05:52.javelin terms. There is plenty of room for improvement. He is loving

:05:53. > :06:00.that one. Look at him. And why not, look at that! Johannes Vetter, well,

:06:01. > :06:08.that is right on the 90-metre line. He had not beaten 90 metres, he was

:06:09. > :06:14.so close in Berlin last year. Has he done it here? Just below. A massive

:06:15. > :06:19.throw from the German. They lie one and two.

:06:20. > :06:28.Holly Bradshaw is in the vault. A first attempt now at 4.5 five.

:06:29. > :06:33.Looking good at the moment. Oh, yes, straight, absolutely superb. She

:06:34. > :06:42.entered the competition at 4.40 five. Several of them went out,

:06:43. > :06:49.finding it a bit difficult. One would expect, on that form, she

:06:50. > :06:53.looks very confident indeed. Twice and Olympic Games finalist, world

:06:54. > :06:59.indoor finalist, she is now based in Cardiff. Chris Baker of Great

:07:00. > :07:11.Britain. That is much better. And indifferent

:07:12. > :07:17.indoor season for him. Little smile from his team-mate Robbie Grabarz.

:07:18. > :07:21.Good clearance, nice rhythm. He had had a bit of an injury problem as

:07:22. > :07:26.well so he is doing very nicely indeed. A smile on his face which

:07:27. > :07:29.will give him a great deal of confidence, that clearance. Now,

:07:30. > :07:42.third attempt from a man who is really up against it now, Olympic

:07:43. > :07:51.champion Thomas Rohler. Let's see what he's got. He is fighting back

:07:52. > :07:57.because that is way beyond 85. Really fast arm. What a fast an he's

:07:58. > :08:02.got. He stomps his left foot down and really works as hard as he can

:08:03. > :08:11.and really wax down there. That is getting closer to the lead, Vetter's

:08:12. > :08:16.lead which stands at 89 metres and 68. Is a personal best for Vetter.

:08:17. > :08:27.Thumbs up it is getting better for the Olympic champion. 88.12, that is

:08:28. > :08:33.good. A season's best for Rohler. The conditions are absolutely

:08:34. > :08:38.superb. Still to come, Genzebe Dibaba makes

:08:39. > :08:42.her 800 metre debut to challenge the great Caster Semenya. It is the

:08:43. > :08:47.Olympic versus the world champion also featuring Britain's Desiree

:08:48. > :08:53.Henry. Ruth Jebet had an amazing 2016.

:08:54. > :08:59.Other Rio medallists join her in the first steeplechase of 2017. As Usain

:09:00. > :09:04.Bolt leads the stage, the race for 100 metre dominance is on. And we

:09:05. > :09:11.will have the best of some top-class field competition. Next on track it

:09:12. > :09:14.is the men's 1500 metres. Doha renowned for producing fast

:09:15. > :09:18.middle-distance races in this season and we have many in this race who

:09:19. > :09:26.will be hoping this year will be no different. Two pacemakers on the

:09:27. > :09:31.outside and then Elijah Manangoi who says he's going to beat the world

:09:32. > :09:36.record this year. Good luck, mate. He is a hugely talented athlete. He

:09:37. > :09:41.was second in the World Championships in Beijing. A

:09:42. > :09:49.disappointing year. He pulled out of Rio after his heats. He had a couple

:09:50. > :09:53.of injuries. Silas Kiplagat we have seen win many Diamond League races.

:09:54. > :10:08.Timothy Cheruiyot who surprised many in Brussels. Ryan Gregson the

:10:09. > :10:13.Australian. Then we have Souleiman who doubled up at the Olympics. And

:10:14. > :10:29.plenty more names to watch out for. A big Kenyan contingent. The men's

:10:30. > :10:38.1500 metres. The pacemakers has been asked to go out at a pretty quick

:10:39. > :10:46.pace for this season. 55 for the first lap. They are jostling and

:10:47. > :10:52.pushing to get to the front. The others are settling further back.

:10:53. > :11:00.Ryan Gregson happy to let everyone get out in front. They are already

:11:01. > :11:08.bunching behind the pacemaker. One or two pushing for some room. It

:11:09. > :11:17.looks fairly steady, if anything. It is early season. Down the back

:11:18. > :11:24.straight. Timothy Cheruiyot the one really following the pacemaker. They

:11:25. > :11:29.are just starting to stretch things little bit. The pacemaker will try

:11:30. > :11:34.and get at least to 1000 metres and then it will probably be Timothy

:11:35. > :11:45.Cheruiyot who's left in front. The athletes have covered 20 metres or

:11:46. > :11:57.so. Coming round to the bowl they will have to do a big, big lap.

:11:58. > :12:09.Silas Kiplagat is trying to get things moving. Bethwell Birgen of

:12:10. > :12:15.Kenya, he is in there. Manangoi it is, down the back straight.

:12:16. > :12:23.Souleiman looks like he is really struggling. Manangoi trying to do

:12:24. > :12:29.what he has done an same any times when he has company. He finishes

:12:30. > :12:32.quick but he looks in a little bit of bother here as Bethwell Birgen

:12:33. > :12:40.comes to attack him on the left-hand side. Kiplagat leads it very late.

:12:41. > :12:45.Kiplagat on the left side. Manangoi hanging in. It is Manangoi who gets

:12:46. > :12:52.it. The sprinters came to the fore at the end. It was Manangoi who gets

:12:53. > :13:01.ahead of Kiplagat. He wins in Doha, he has come second here before.

:13:02. > :13:08.Well, the winning time in the end,, it was close to 3.13. That is not a

:13:09. > :13:20.bad way to start your season, just under 3.30 two. Kiplagat just down.

:13:21. > :13:24.We wed be talking about world leads in general here tonight because this

:13:25. > :13:48.is the first meet and there is very little action indeed.

:13:49. > :14:00.That may be better. That was a good throw. It sailed that the end. That

:14:01. > :14:07.will definitely be a season's best. Thomas Rohler is in second place

:14:08. > :14:20.with 88 metres and 12. And the cheque just waiting to see. A great

:14:21. > :14:24.performance from him. That is ten centimetres below his personal best.

:14:25. > :14:33.We have got a great javelin competition going. Well, indeed. The

:14:34. > :14:37.crowd being incited by the high jumpers. The javelin with Thomas

:14:38. > :14:38.Rohler about to launch that 800 grand javelin away. Have you ever

:14:39. > :14:55.seen such a disdainful look across?! He has a little bit to make up here.

:14:56. > :15:04.He has 88.12, he has 88.96 to make, and that is a big ask. What has he

:15:05. > :15:11.done with that one? Oh, I say! That is a sensational throw, we over 90

:15:12. > :15:18.metres. I mean, he was in 98 metres territory, but that is a sensational

:15:19. > :15:24.throw, unbelievable. We over 90 metres for the Olympic champion. The

:15:25. > :15:34.questions were asked, and the answer was given, 93.90, wow! That put him

:15:35. > :15:42.second on the all-time list behind Zelezny. What a throw.

:15:43. > :15:51.Here is the line-up on the left of your shot, and it features some of

:15:52. > :16:02.the big names, certainly two of them in Caster Semenya and Dibaba. She

:16:03. > :16:11.said she thought 55 seconds, but so many wouldn't have the 55 first lap

:16:12. > :16:19.that was requested by Dibaba. Runs very much more of an even pace to

:16:20. > :16:32.race. There is a former world champion in Eunice Sum of Kenya.

:16:33. > :16:43.Dibaba has had one race over 800 metres this season. Then you have

:16:44. > :16:50.jaws which of Poland. She was fifth in the Olympic final. And then

:16:51. > :16:56.Charlene Lipsey of the United States drawn on the inside. She is

:16:57. > :17:00.obviously improving well. They are looking for 57 for the first lap,

:17:01. > :17:04.and then we will see how Dibaba will go, she wanted the faster first lap,

:17:05. > :17:10.but she hasn't got it. Caster Semenya said no.

:17:11. > :17:19.We will see when they get into the back straight, what sort of line-up

:17:20. > :17:25.we have got. Certainly Caster Semenya looks so comfortable, and

:17:26. > :17:30.Dibaba sitting comfortable it towards the back of that field. She

:17:31. > :17:38.has the speed endurance, the strength endurance, for sure.

:17:39. > :17:44.Chatting earlier on today, she said she was pleased it was 57 not 55,

:17:45. > :17:48.but you can see the reticence of Wambui and Semenya to go with the

:17:49. > :17:54.pace, and you can understand that, 1500 metres runners, they wanted

:17:55. > :18:00.good and hard from the start. Pointless trying to train sprints.

:18:01. > :18:07.But Dibaba has done a 57 at the end of a 1500, so looking forward to

:18:08. > :18:15.this. Jenny Meadows has a lead now, but Semenya is sitting right off

:18:16. > :18:23.this. Wambui is there, and Natoga rule from Jamaica Inn is up there as

:18:24. > :18:28.well. -- from Jamaica is up there as well. Four times the national

:18:29. > :18:35.champion, she is going to find it tough now. How easy does Semenya

:18:36. > :18:38.Luck? She goes past Wambui, Dibaba in third place now, and then Sum,

:18:39. > :18:45.the former world champion, behind her. Semenya looks majestic, so

:18:46. > :18:51.comfortable, as they go with about 130 to go. Wambui putting the pedal

:18:52. > :18:59.down, Dibaba looking for speed and it is not coming. Semenya absolutely

:19:00. > :19:04.flying. Total dominance, Wambui in second place, Sum looks like she

:19:05. > :19:12.will come to third. Semenya wins it, Wambui in second place, Sum in third

:19:13. > :19:20.place, and I think it was... I am just looking at the time, can we

:19:21. > :19:27.catch it? Lets just check it out. 1:56.61. It looked quickly, it was

:19:28. > :19:32.quick. It is the fastest we have seen by a long way, a meeting

:19:33. > :19:37.record, very classy. By anyone's standing, that is a good run by

:19:38. > :19:40.Semenya. She has been in great form already coming out of the South

:19:41. > :19:49.African season, and look at that form. Wambui doing her best, and you

:19:50. > :19:52.looked at Dibaba there, that is about as bad as you will see her

:19:53. > :19:58.looking in the last few metres of a 1500 metres race, all over the

:19:59. > :20:05.place. She has only just dipped under two minutes, 1.57 at the end

:20:06. > :20:11.of the 200 metres final last year, so nowhere near Semenya, out of

:20:12. > :20:15.Rome, and if she keeps running like that for the rest of the season,

:20:16. > :20:23.which I expect she will, you can't see anybody getting past, can you?

:20:24. > :20:27.STUDIO: This year the Diamond League is a little different. There are 14

:20:28. > :20:30.meetings around the world encompassing 16 disciplines, both

:20:31. > :20:33.men and women, but the competition now follows a championship model,

:20:34. > :20:37.with the first 12 meetings acting as qualification for one of the two

:20:38. > :20:44.finals in Zurich and Brussels. Each of the disciplines is staged six or

:20:45. > :20:48.four times before the final, and each meeting, athletes are awarded

:20:49. > :20:51.points for their ranking. The top athletes at the end of qualification

:20:52. > :20:57.will be awarded a starting place in the winner takes all final.

:20:58. > :21:15.COMMENTATOR: Arca of Nigeria, a cracking start to the year for

:21:16. > :21:21.Desiree Henry, still just 21. A relay bronze-medallist last year,

:21:22. > :21:34.and close to that 11 seconds mark already this year.

:21:35. > :21:42.Ta Lou, fourth in both sprints. Elaine Thompson, already having a

:21:43. > :21:47.great season, it began with a 60 metres personal best in Birmingham,

:21:48. > :21:56.you might remember that, and she has also run a rather modest personal

:21:57. > :22:01.best outdoors, so this 200 should set her very nicely. Dafne

:22:02. > :22:08.Schippers, in training in America, she has already had some good

:22:09. > :22:11.results in training. And Veronica Campbell-Brown, so many of these

:22:12. > :22:15.athletes coming over from the Caribbean season, the American relay

:22:16. > :22:22.season, and of course the world relays which were just recently held

:22:23. > :22:31.in the Bahamas. Simone Facey, the Texan student, and Atkins will be

:22:32. > :22:36.right on the inside. So, Elaine Thompson in lane five, Dafne

:22:37. > :22:42.Schippers in lane four, Veronica Campbell-Brown in lane three. And

:22:43. > :22:47.the Ivory Coast athlete Ta Lou in six.

:22:48. > :22:58.Thompson gets a very good start, but so does Dafne Schippers. Desiree

:22:59. > :23:03.Henry is already up. Chronicle Campbell Brown is running a good

:23:04. > :23:09.bend. Dafne Schippers trying to hang on down the home straight. Ta Lou

:23:10. > :23:18.getting into the back, but it is a lane Thompson who wins it. It was a

:23:19. > :23:21.measured bend from Elaine Thompson, that last 20 metres off the bend,

:23:22. > :23:28.that transition into a home straight, opened up the gap, and

:23:29. > :23:32.after that, Dafne Schippers was just chasing and never really got on

:23:33. > :23:39.terms. What speed endurance that showed. You are quite right, it was

:23:40. > :23:44.by her standards a fairly ponderous bend, and of course Dafne Schippers

:23:45. > :23:48.was right upon her, but the transition was superb, she just

:23:49. > :23:52.flowed into the home straight. She is down at the moment, and right on

:23:53. > :23:55.the inside of her, Veronica Campbell-Brown was going well at

:23:56. > :24:00.this stage, then all of a sudden the burners are turned on and she starts

:24:01. > :24:07.to move away. Perfect, beautiful relaxation, high on the toes, hips

:24:08. > :24:11.high, total and utter concentration. Schippers struggling, having to give

:24:12. > :24:19.way in the final stages. It was into a slight headwind, so that might

:24:20. > :24:30.have been worse, 22.19, could she have got under 22 without the

:24:31. > :24:41.headwind? Schippers behind her, and Ta Lou taking third with 22.77.

:24:42. > :24:45.Desiree Henry disappointing, back in seventh, 23.22.

:24:46. > :24:53.The tracksuit bottoms are off now, they mean business. And a huge cheer

:24:54. > :24:58.goes up for the local lad. His early athletics career involved

:24:59. > :25:04.racewalking, a bit of distance running, before he found the high

:25:05. > :25:08.jump, and what a prodigious talent he had, all those problems he has

:25:09. > :25:12.had with his back seam at the moment to be put to one side, and he is

:25:13. > :25:17.jumping beautifully. There was a period last year where we were

:25:18. > :25:20.expecting him to do well, and there was a big drop-off in his form,

:25:21. > :25:31.perhaps he was doing too much in preparation. This is Donald Thomas,

:25:32. > :25:40.2.29, and it stayed. So, two men clear at 2.29. Donald Thomas has

:25:41. > :25:50.been around a long time, really gave that a rattle, but it stays on.

:25:51. > :25:56.Robbie Grabarz, 2.29. He needs this. Oh, that's better! He came off a

:25:57. > :26:12.pretty good indoor season, and Robbie now, 2.29, joins Barshim and

:26:13. > :26:16.Ghazal, the only ones clear at this height.

:26:17. > :26:19.STUDIO: Our Diamond League coverage continues next Sunday from Shanghai.

:26:20. > :26:27.Later this month, and a little closer to home, we will have the

:26:28. > :26:31.great city games in Manchester: The great Manchester run is on Sunday

:26:32. > :26:37.the 28th of May, live on ABC two. But now the latest news from the

:26:38. > :26:40.world of athletics. There have been controversial

:26:41. > :26:43.proposals put forward by the European athletics governing body

:26:44. > :26:47.who have suggested rewriting all world records set before 2005 in an

:26:48. > :26:53.attempt to restore faith in the sport. If the proposals are ratified

:26:54. > :26:57.by the IAAF, a world record would only stand if it was achieved at a

:26:58. > :27:00.competition on a list of approved international events. The athletes

:27:01. > :27:04.will have an subject to an agreed number of doping tests in the

:27:05. > :27:08.monthly Diop Tuitt, and the sample taken after the record was stored

:27:09. > :27:12.and available for retesting tenures. That would mean many prominent

:27:13. > :27:15.retired athletes could face losing their world records despite never

:27:16. > :27:19.having failed a drugs test, as their records were set before modern

:27:20. > :27:22.anti-dumping measures were put in place. This proposal has been

:27:23. > :27:27.heavily criticised by athletes who stand to lose their records. Paula

:27:28. > :27:34.Radcliffe, Jonathan Edwards, Jonathan and Steve Cram have all

:27:35. > :27:39.expressed their disappointment at what was described as collateral

:27:40. > :27:43.damage in the fight against doping, as was Colin Jackson. This is a

:27:44. > :27:48.revolutionary approach, and we want to regain the trust of the public. I

:27:49. > :27:52.would have thought that the world record should be taken from athletes

:27:53. > :27:55.not from bureaucrats sitting in offices who make a decision that all

:27:56. > :27:59.of a sudden actually we are not sure that you did your record legally,

:28:00. > :28:03.that is how it sounds to me, so we will just eradicate it off the

:28:04. > :28:09.books. That doesn't seem fair in any shape or form. This is a broad

:28:10. > :28:12.sweeping solution which they are trying to push in, which yet again

:28:30. > :28:40.COMMENTATOR: Sowter the women's one hurdles. The line-up, you can see on

:28:41. > :28:49.the left. Sharika Nelvis was eighth in Beijing in 2015, just outside 13

:28:50. > :28:57.seconds. Cindy Roleder, fifth in the Olympic games, European champion.

:28:58. > :29:02.There is so much talent here. Nia Ali, 12.48 her best, and here is the

:29:03. > :29:05.world record holder, Kendra Harrison, didn't even make the

:29:06. > :29:10.American Olympic team, sixth in their trials. She was towed dominant

:29:11. > :29:15.in setting the world record at 12.20 last season. Christina Manning of

:29:16. > :29:28.the United States, 12.6 T two a personal best and seasons best.

:29:29. > :29:31.Let's see what Cindy Ofili can do here, Kendra Harrison seven times a

:29:32. > :29:38.Diamond League winner, looked invincible last year, and whatever

:29:39. > :29:44.happened for her to come sixth in the Olympic trials? She was so

:29:45. > :30:12.dominant. But that is athletics for you.

:30:13. > :30:18.This should be a very quick race in deed. Harrison away very strongly.

:30:19. > :30:28.Harrison moving further and further away. The time,... There is a little

:30:29. > :30:36.bit of a niggle where I fancy. A little bit of a limp for Kendra

:30:37. > :30:40.Harrison. I just wonder if there was a little problem at the end of that

:30:41. > :30:51.race. She has wandered over and she is in tears at the end there. I am

:30:52. > :30:58.not sure why. Nia Ali was awful. She smashed that first hurdle. As ever,

:30:59. > :31:03.nice and nice and smooth and clean. We didn't see a problem and it

:31:04. > :31:09.looked like everything was OK and then all of a sudden the tears come.

:31:10. > :31:15.She is down there asking for medical attention. Therein to to meet a

:31:16. > :31:19.headwind so it was never going to be quick but for her that is reasonably

:31:20. > :31:23.quick. Just watch as she comes over the last hurdle. May be only a

:31:24. > :31:38.niggle, let's hope so. 2016 was an amazing breakthrough

:31:39. > :31:42.year for steeplechaser Ruth Jebet. She went on to become Bahrain's

:31:43. > :31:48.first Olympic gold medal list winning the Rio final before

:31:49. > :31:52.returning to the Diamond League before smashing the world record,

:31:53. > :31:54.all before her 20th birthday. Can she get off to a winning start this

:31:55. > :32:04.year? Here we go in the 3000 metres

:32:05. > :32:20.steeplechase. The list is on the left of the picture. There is Ruth

:32:21. > :32:26.Jebet the Olympic champion. Kyeng is the world champion. She won the

:32:27. > :32:34.world title in Beijing. Emma Coburn as well, and Olympic

:32:35. > :32:39.bronze-medallist, terrific. The pace they have set is for something like

:32:40. > :32:50.9.15 but we will see what chance buyers in this. I would expect to

:32:51. > :33:00.see the world champion Kyeng trying to get into this race and put

:33:01. > :33:11.pressure on Jebet. Certainly the pacemakers have got to do a decent

:33:12. > :33:17.job here. Gathoni is not helping at all here moving far too far away.

:33:18. > :33:35.That doesn't help at all. By the Olympic silver-medallist last

:33:36. > :33:41.year, he so wanted to win in Rio but it was not to be and in front of his

:33:42. > :33:54.home crowd. We have seen him produce fabulous performances. Yes, yes! I'm

:33:55. > :34:01.not sure he has even started. We could be in for a long night here.

:34:02. > :34:07.He looks kind of up for this. The Olympic silver-medallist with the

:34:08. > :34:13.bar now at 4.65. There she goes. Sandi Morris says she is loving the

:34:14. > :34:22.rivalry developing between herself and her rival Katerina Stefanidi.

:34:23. > :34:27.She trains and lives in the US as well and they have got to know each

:34:28. > :34:37.other pretty well. The two of them are starting to dominate in this.

:34:38. > :34:46.Here she is, the Olympic champion. A second time at 4.65. In second

:34:47. > :34:54.place. A determined athlete. Oh, yes, that was a superb vault. She

:34:55. > :34:58.has really come of age. She said the Olympic final was very hard indeed.

:34:59. > :35:09.She said it was a difficult endeavour. The Olympic champion and

:35:10. > :35:19.4.86 is her personal best but that looked good. Yarisley Silva. Didn't

:35:20. > :35:24.look good early on. She has had a fair few failures in this. Seven

:35:25. > :35:35.failures so far, but that is when it matters, when you start clearing the

:35:36. > :35:41.bigger heights. And so she gets over that 4.65 season's best. Holly

:35:42. > :35:44.Bradshaw is out now. She is finished. There is a good little

:35:45. > :35:50.group they're just starting to slow a little bit at the front. Emma

:35:51. > :35:59.Coburn and others are good 15 metres behind them. We will get the time

:36:00. > :36:03.for the first kilometre in a moment. They are just inside the 9.15. They

:36:04. > :36:09.are on about 9.10 if they keep this going. One of the pacemakers has

:36:10. > :36:14.dropped out now. Ruth Jebet who we have seen many times leading races

:36:15. > :36:20.but she has proved everything she needs to prove. That is a fast

:36:21. > :36:37.paced, Stuart. It is nine minute pace. Chepsol is up there. They are

:36:38. > :36:41.all trying to do their best here. It is developing into a fast pace and

:36:42. > :36:48.you wonder at what point Jebet will want to push on here. They are going

:36:49. > :36:51.a bit quicker than was initially asked. But now you are in this case,

:36:52. > :36:59.I wonder if she thinks, I will take this opportunity to push on.

:37:00. > :37:12.This is Omar Craddock. Trying to work out the wind here. Going into a

:37:13. > :37:22.bit of a breeze. That was solid enough. Nice on the board. I tell

:37:23. > :37:26.you, Steve, he is having to work very, very hard in there,

:37:27. > :37:31.particularly in the middle phase to survive and get into that job. It is

:37:32. > :37:39.very ragged. There is nothing smooth about that. It is a piece of power

:37:40. > :37:44.triple jumping. Well, that is good from him, already proving his

:37:45. > :37:49.season's best, going beyond 17 metres. That will move him into an

:37:50. > :38:00.early lead. The men's high jump, Robbie Grabarz. Oh, yes, he is

:38:01. > :38:04.continuing to go well here. I was talking about his confidence he

:38:05. > :38:09.carries now season three season. Although he did not win a medal in

:38:10. > :38:13.Rio he was happy with the competition and a big year ahead.

:38:14. > :38:22.London where he won the bronze medal in 2012. He has a chance in front of

:38:23. > :38:28.a home crowd again to do the same. So Mutaz Essa Barshim now. Here we

:38:29. > :38:34.go again. And once more. He is showing the others where to go. And

:38:35. > :38:45.where he is going, he will certainly not beat him in the sense that

:38:46. > :38:51.first-time clearance. So smooth, lovely rhythm coming in. Getting a

:38:52. > :38:58.little bit excited now. Coming round now with a couple of laps to go in

:38:59. > :39:06.the women's steeplechase. Jebet leads. Kiyeng in second place. Then

:39:07. > :39:14.Chepsol, world junior champion. Beatrice Chepkoech has been there or

:39:15. > :39:18.thereabouts all the time. Jebet is now about 40 metres down. The rest

:39:19. > :39:26.following in their wake really because the pace has really hotted

:39:27. > :39:37.up now. Jebet has taken it on now. The tenor of the races hers. This is

:39:38. > :39:41.a real charge once again. We have seen Jebet run the races in

:39:42. > :39:45.different ways. When she was looking for records she would go out there

:39:46. > :39:49.in set the pace herself, really hammer it home. This could be the

:39:50. > :39:54.first time we have seen more than one woman go to nine minutes in a

:39:55. > :40:00.race. I said she will have to dig it up because Kiyeng looking dangerous,

:40:01. > :40:05.really, really dangerous. The world champion of 2015 does not like

:40:06. > :40:12.losing. She hurtled well they are right on the shoulder of Jebet.

:40:13. > :40:16.These two are away. Beatrice Chepkoech in third place and the

:40:17. > :40:25.junior just dropping off a little bit. What a race we have here with

:40:26. > :40:29.the world champion. Watch the clock. Absolutely superb. Kiyeng has come

:40:30. > :40:36.past the Olympic champion and world record-holder. Can she hold on? She

:40:37. > :40:43.can indeed. Jebet is finished. Kiyeng is coming through. Look the

:40:44. > :40:52.clock! Just missed the nine minutes. So, it was very, very quick. Emma

:40:53. > :41:01.Coburn coming through to finish here. Assefa coming through to

:41:02. > :41:06.finish as well. They will all know it was pretty quick. In fact, it was

:41:07. > :41:13.a sensationally quit race in the end. Just outside nine minutes. How

:41:14. > :41:19.close was that? We almost had the two under nine minutes, didn't we?

:41:20. > :41:24.Cracking race. This is Jebet looking up at the screen. She knows the

:41:25. > :41:29.I said at the bell she was just looking a bit flat

:41:30. > :41:35.flat. Kiyeng on her shoulder knows she has to go away here. They are

:41:36. > :41:39.chasing the clock. At this point you still thought there was a point for

:41:40. > :41:45.two of them to get under nine minutes. In the end, Jebet faded.

:41:46. > :41:49.Kiyeng came away. She was not even looking at the clock. She has missed

:41:50. > :42:31.it by a tent of a second. Asafa Powell, he has run more sub

:42:32. > :42:39.tens than anyone else. Justin Gatlin. Of course, not able to hang

:42:40. > :42:45.onto Usain Bolt in Rio. He had one or two injury problems last year

:42:46. > :42:52.which held him back. 35 years of age now, the American. Akani Simbine

:42:53. > :43:00.from South Africa, what a start to his year. It will be really

:43:01. > :43:06.interesting to see how he goes. A breeze in the face will not help. A

:43:07. > :43:15.local man, Benny Aga Moody, running for Qatar. -- Femi Ogunode.

:43:16. > :43:27.Gatlin as ever gets out pretty quickly. Andre de Grasse struggling.

:43:28. > :43:37.Asafa Powell takes second. We were looking for sub ten. Didn't quite

:43:38. > :43:44.getting that. It has come up as 9.99 in front of May. And that is into a

:43:45. > :43:52.headwind. I said how well he has been going, what a season this young

:43:53. > :43:56.man has had. A real powerhouse of a start from Gatlin. You expected him

:43:57. > :44:03.to go away with this. Simbine really put the pressure on the South

:44:04. > :44:05.African. An Olympic Games champion. He has been in the big championships

:44:06. > :44:20.before but he is believing now. Justin Gatlin and Andre de Grasse,

:44:21. > :44:27.the two big names of this race, disappointing. This is Katerina

:44:28. > :44:35.Stefanidi in the pole vaulter. A really good competition from her.

:44:36. > :44:39.Again goes clear. The Olympic champion is performing so well. I

:44:40. > :44:46.saw a glimpse of her earlier on with her husband coach. Based in Arizona

:44:47. > :44:49.for the last couple of years and she said everything over the last couple

:44:50. > :44:59.of years has just come together perfectly. There he is.

:45:00. > :45:13.The two of them are brilliant partnership on and off the track.

:45:14. > :45:22.Sandy Morris at 4.75, having seen the record, chasing Stefanidi, and a

:45:23. > :45:28.huge roar from Sandi Morris, and look at this, real strength from

:45:29. > :45:33.Morris, and then the athleticism comes in. She had a little bit to

:45:34. > :45:39.spare as well, Sery seasons best Morris outdoors.

:45:40. > :45:54.Just looking at the line-up you can see on the left there. Van Zyl

:45:55. > :46:09.there, and Clement, the world champion. Very quick, some 45. The

:46:10. > :46:14.following season he was nowhere near the form that we saw. Samba of Qatar

:46:15. > :46:59.is a world leader at this stage. Nicholas Bett has not gone off very

:47:00. > :47:07.quickly indeed. Clement now making some headway as they come into the

:47:08. > :47:14.300 metres mark. Samba going very strongly indeed in this race. He is

:47:15. > :47:21.the world leader, and he has got the fast time in this so far, and he is

:47:22. > :47:28.absolutely flying in this, the crowd will enjoy this one. Kerron Clement

:47:29. > :47:37.struggling, but look at this, samba of Qatar, WinZip comfortably, van

:47:38. > :47:44.Zyl in third place, and we have a new kid on the block, he is only 21,

:47:45. > :47:52.he looked very strong. Clement looked good, but from about 300 in,

:47:53. > :47:58.this young fellow absolutely flew away from the rest of the field.

:47:59. > :48:04.What a talent he is. He is big and strong, he has got to control that,

:48:05. > :48:07.and his stride pattern, he has changed down before this point, but

:48:08. > :48:14.at this point, he has gone so hard, you think, are you going to fall

:48:15. > :48:22.apart? But he obviously has huge ability, and this is a massive find

:48:23. > :48:25.for Qatar. If he is running low 48s at this stage in the development of

:48:26. > :48:29.his career, what is he going to be capable of? That that the distance

:48:30. > :48:35.between him and what is a very capable field. He has a look at the

:48:36. > :48:42.clock almost as if to say, really? He thought he might be closer to

:48:43. > :48:48.breaking 48 seconds. He is a big new star in this event.

:48:49. > :48:53.Get inspired is BBC Sport's new campaign to help you get active. You

:49:11. > :49:17.try near you. Just get up and get active.

:49:18. > :49:30.Last event on the track this evening, the men's 3000 is, hugely

:49:31. > :49:43.talented men like Kewmoi. Chelimo made a name for himself in the

:49:44. > :49:50.Olympic Games, and could Kejelcha knows how to do well. 3000, seven

:49:51. > :49:56.and a half laps of the track. The pace they have asked for world get

:49:57. > :50:01.them to two kilometres in just outside five minutes. They are

:50:02. > :50:07.looking for something quicker than 7.30, it is whether or not they get

:50:08. > :50:11.the pace over the first 45 laps. Conditions as ever really good, the

:50:12. > :50:22.breeze settling down a little bit, it is in their faces in the home

:50:23. > :50:39.straight. This is Kazi from Hungary who is trying to run around 60 -

:50:40. > :50:45.second laps. Barshim knew he had to aim for the higher height, grab

:50:46. > :50:52.Robbie Grabarz guaranteed second place, had a decent go at 2.33 mob

:50:53. > :50:55.at 2.55 is beyond him to night. He will be pleased to have come second

:50:56. > :51:00.in a good quality competition, he knows that Barshim is great. It is

:51:01. > :51:07.up to him to see how high he can go tonight. 2.36, then. He looked so

:51:08. > :51:19.good right up to and including 2.30 three. Oh, yes. 2.36, and flying.

:51:20. > :51:23.Bronze-medallist as I said in London, but how far has he come

:51:24. > :51:30.since then? So close to the world record with 2.43 his personal best.

:51:31. > :51:34.Some terrific competitions, but he is full of confidence, he is at

:51:35. > :51:46.home. Everything is right for him, and you can see the pass, read cross

:51:47. > :52:04.is a failure, a pass, and then the first time clearance at 2.30 six. --

:52:05. > :52:09.2.36. Stefanidi, what a performer. I tell you what, that lead will be

:52:10. > :52:29.difficult to take away, that's for sure.

:52:30. > :52:37.So, Copello, they are all struggling with the headwind a little here,

:52:38. > :52:43.let's see what Copello can do here, he just fell off a little at the

:52:44. > :52:52.end. Very good on the board, but Copello, he is a neat runner on his

:52:53. > :53:00.approach, but again, they are all struggling to get any distance at

:53:01. > :53:11.all tonight. Maybe an improvement. Indeed it is, 16.81, and that moves

:53:12. > :53:24.him up into third-place. Four laps to go in the men's 3000. Could of

:53:25. > :53:32.Kejelcha has never been far from the front, but the pace has been strong,

:53:33. > :53:47.there is always a danger that it will fall off. They are trying to

:53:48. > :53:51.maintain a roundabout 60-2nd laps. Further back on the field, you can

:53:52. > :53:59.see they're all stretched out. Andrew Butchart has been training,

:54:00. > :54:04.many have come here expecting a fast time, but look at the gap now,

:54:05. > :54:19.Kejelcha is out in front with three to go. This is the javelin, and

:54:20. > :54:27.third place was Vadlejch, and my goodness me, that last throw was a

:54:28. > :54:30.demonstration. That is close to the 90 metres line, and that got him

:54:31. > :54:38.third place, that was the quality of this competition, he hit it very

:54:39. > :54:43.hard. He was eighth in that final, now throwing it out close to 90

:54:44. > :54:53.metres. How often would that distance have won a major event on

:54:54. > :55:01.any circuit, really? And there he is, 93.90, the second longest

:55:02. > :55:03.throw-in javelin history. Fabulous javelin competition, and better

:55:04. > :55:15.doesn't look too happy. -- Japan is only Zelezny has thrown further than

:55:16. > :55:30.that. Christian Taylor, and that was good

:55:31. > :55:35.enough to take it at 17.25. Way off the board, that is what you call

:55:36. > :55:37.safe, and there it is, 17.25, that will do and it moves him ahead of

:55:38. > :55:53.Cradock who took second place. It is Kejelcha, and now Kwemoi. Paul

:55:54. > :55:57.Chelimo who kicked so well at the Olympic Games to get a good time,

:55:58. > :56:04.they are still going fast, and a big gap behind them. Andrew Butchart of

:56:05. > :56:09.Great Britain and Ben true making progress, but the four in the front,

:56:10. > :56:14.it is Kejelcha with the kickers, here comes Kwemoi again. Ndiku

:56:15. > :56:21.looking a little ragged for the first time. Kwemoi makes the first

:56:22. > :56:27.move. Chelimo tries to cover it. It is Kwemoi, the silver-medallist from

:56:28. > :56:33.2014, the man who wants to make a go at the 5000 metres is chasing, or is

:56:34. > :56:39.making Chelimo try to chase him. And Kwemoi finds another gear, and away

:56:40. > :56:44.he goes. Look at this, he is fantastic. He has a chance of going

:56:45. > :56:54.under 7.30, and look at the clock, 7.28. Then it is Chelimo, then

:56:55. > :56:58.Kejelcha, then a very tired Ndiku. There will be some quick times

:56:59. > :57:06.tonight behind as the clock now ticks are beyond 7.40 four, 45. That

:57:07. > :57:14.was a big race for this man. The 3000 to distances, that is very big,

:57:15. > :57:20.a huge performance from him. That will put him not quite on the world

:57:21. > :57:24.all-time list of the top 20, but not far away from it.

:57:25. > :57:35.Headlines were made on the field, 90 metres and 93 centimetres for Thomas

:57:36. > :57:39.Rohler, the Olympic champion. And Barshim in the high jump set a

:57:40. > :57:46.record. And a new name to watch out for, Samba in the 400 metres

:57:47. > :57:52.hurdles. Robbie Grabarz has a good start to his outdoor season. Holly

:57:53. > :57:57.Bradshaw, 4.55, expect she might be disappointed not to have gone higher

:57:58. > :58:05.tonight. And on the track, Andrew Butchart, Desiree Henry and Cindy

:58:06. > :58:09.Ofili a little disappointing, but it is early days, amazing how quickly

:58:10. > :58:13.June and July will come. If you want to see more, you can on

:58:14. > :58:17.the BBC website or the News channel. Next week the athletes converge in

:58:18. > :58:20.Shanghai, and you can see highlights on five o'clock at BBC Two on

:58:21. > :58:33.Sunday. Until then, goodbye. Usain Bolt! He has done it! Caster

:58:34. > :58:40.Semenya is the champion. It is a new British record.

:58:41. > :58:46.It is a mammoth jump. Sophie Hitchon, what an effort.

:58:47. > :58:57.It is huge, a new British record. David Rudisha is going to win the

:58:58. > :59:02.world title. Laura Muir has smashed the British

:59:03. > :59:05.record. Mo Farah wins the gold!
