:00:49. > :00:54.Welcome to Diamond League highlights from Rome. We're back in Europe now
:00:55. > :00:57.and with eight weeks to go until the start of the World Championships in
:00:58. > :00:58.London many of the athletes in Italy's capital were looking to
:00:59. > :01:24.impress. So let's get straight into the
:01:25. > :01:34.action with your commentators Steve Cram and Tim Hutchins. Good evening
:01:35. > :01:47.everybody. There is the line-up. That's Russell of Jamaica. And there
:01:48. > :01:57.is Pedroso. A former Cuban. Just one 400 metres hurdles this year. This
:01:58. > :02:03.is Theron Nel. Performeded badly in Rio. There is the world champion in
:02:04. > :02:08.2013 and retained her title in 2015 from Moscow. She was champion once
:02:09. > :02:14.again in Beijing. Fastest non-US athlete this year with the season's
:02:15. > :02:23.best of 54.5. That was a couple of weeks back. Sara Petersen only
:02:24. > :02:29.world-class for the last two or three years the 30-year-old. Doyle
:02:30. > :02:35.goes in lane three for Great Britain. Just one 400 metres
:02:36. > :02:58.hurledles this year. Well, the conditions are just about
:02:59. > :03:04.perfect in Rome. It's a warm evening. No breeze in the arena
:03:05. > :03:08.either. It looks like lane eight, Russell has gone out the quickest of
:03:09. > :03:14.all. She was fifth in the last World Championships. She would have been
:03:15. > :03:26.disappointed with her seventh in Rio last year.
:03:27. > :03:44.Russell. They come to this barrier. Russell has really attacked the
:03:45. > :03:50.first 300 metres. Going strongly is Sara Petson. It will be Russell.
:03:51. > :03:53.Well, my word. Running scared they say in those outside lanes when you
:03:54. > :03:58.have very little idea of what's going on inside you. You're
:03:59. > :04:01.concentrating on your stride pattern and on getting the barriers right.
:04:02. > :04:07.You don't spend that much attention on those inside you, but you're sort
:04:08. > :04:10.of aware of them in your peripheral vision, but she never really gave
:04:11. > :04:15.them a chance to come into view. That was a brilliant run from
:04:16. > :04:19.Russell. The Jamaican winning. A season's best for her. What the
:04:20. > :04:27.fifth fastest time in the world this year. The Jamaican really strong.
:04:28. > :04:31.She went out hard because she was chasing the American down. She
:04:32. > :04:35.didn't fall apart and kept her stride pattern together. Really
:04:36. > :04:39.strong at the end and was watching for the challenge up on the big
:04:40. > :04:43.screen, but it never really materialised. A really good
:04:44. > :04:51.performance. A fairly comfortable win. Two or three there with
:04:52. > :05:07.disappointing performances. Still to come, Chijindu Ujah faces Ronnie
:05:08. > :05:11.Baker in the 100 metres. Schippers is the best hope in the 100 metres.
:05:12. > :05:21.We will have all the best of the action from some top class field
:05:22. > :05:32.events. One non-starter in the steeplechase.
:05:33. > :05:37.We have Conseslus Kipruto. We saw him at the Doha Diamond League. Not
:05:38. > :05:43.running particularly well over 3,000 metres flat it has to be said. He
:05:44. > :05:57.has some familiar figures up against him. Soufiane El Bakkali. So
:05:58. > :06:04.Conseslus Kipruto is the favourite here, but you've got to watch out
:06:05. > :06:15.for the 21-year-old. We have got Nicholas Bett in here. Then we
:06:16. > :06:36.always have to factor in others. Ezekiel Kemboi is always surrounded
:06:37. > :06:40.by some drama. The pace is quick. They should have a chance of going
:06:41. > :06:48.close to eight minutes. They started quickly. A cracking field in the
:06:49. > :06:52.women's triple jump including the top three from the Olympic Games in
:06:53. > :07:05.Rio last year. The Queen of the triple jump. She's still on top, but
:07:06. > :07:17.she has got some real challengers. Ibarguen is still the one to beat.
:07:18. > :07:24.The world lead is 14.96. Almost 15 metres already so early in the
:07:25. > :07:32.season. It could be a big year for her. She started off well, the
:07:33. > :07:43.Kazakhstan athlete. So second round. 14.64 and improving on her 14.24
:07:44. > :07:48.from round one. She is a massive figure. As Steve said, she tops the
:07:49. > :07:53.world's rankings and that doesn't look too bad either. That coming
:07:54. > :08:01.down between the leading jump so far in the competition and the world
:08:02. > :08:07.lead. Her own world lead of 14.96. When she fills out and powers up so
:08:08. > :08:15.to speak, she is only 21, the world indoor champion. Nowhere near the
:08:16. > :08:26.board there. 14.76 gives her a nice lead. The pace has just dropped and
:08:27. > :08:34.all of a sudden the youngster, the world junior champion is slotted in
:08:35. > :08:41.behind him. Taking the water jump much better on that occasion. The
:08:42. > :08:48.Moroccan just gives a nudge and says, "I've come through on the
:08:49. > :08:53.inside." Conseslus Kipruto comes around with two laps to go. Slowed a
:08:54. > :08:57.bit after that, but they are not far away from an eight minute pace. It
:08:58. > :09:10.will be a quick race and all of a sudden, look at the youngster there.
:09:11. > :09:24.So they take the bell. Losing ground. So it is Conseslus Kipruto.
:09:25. > :09:30.Conseslus Kipruto responds. There is a gap between these three and
:09:31. > :09:38.Birech. Conseslus Kipruto holds him off and that's going to be soul
:09:39. > :09:44.destroying for the youngster. It is the Moroccan now. Conseslus Kipruto
:09:45. > :09:47.the last time into the water jump. Conseslus Kipruto holds the inside
:09:48. > :09:52.and does it well. The two of them come off the water jump at top
:09:53. > :09:57.speed. It's a battle for third. One more barrier to go and Conseslus
:09:58. > :10:01.Kipruto is under some real pressure. Soufiane El Bakkali will be running
:10:02. > :10:05.a personal best. Conseslus Kipruto comes away again. The Olympic
:10:06. > :10:12.champion has enough. A wag of the finger. Eight minutes four. Fastest
:10:13. > :10:17.in the world this year. Birech just pipped his young team-mate for third
:10:18. > :10:21.spot. Well, that's a massive jump forward for the Moroccan though. He
:10:22. > :10:26.really challenged Conseslus Kipruto. Here you can see the Moroccan
:10:27. > :10:32.leaning into him. He almost forced him on to the in field. He gave him
:10:33. > :10:37.a shove and stayed alongside him and cleared the barrier well. Look at
:10:38. > :10:43.the leg speed. Very impressive, indeed. A cheeky glance back at his
:10:44. > :10:51.competitor there. Look at how quickly they opened up the gap.
:10:52. > :11:02.There was a 15 metre gap. 8.04. There is so much more to come. Well,
:11:03. > :11:07.he's delighted. He doesn't mind he has come second. The man who has
:11:08. > :11:19.been dominant for the last few years. Just looking further down,
:11:20. > :11:24.Birech did get the third spot. Can the Olympic champion respond? She
:11:25. > :11:30.has been dominant for so long in the triple jump? She is trying to find a
:11:31. > :11:34.bit. She looks anxiously back. Gets the white flag. Much better from the
:11:35. > :11:45.Columbian. Couldn't have been better really. Perfect. One isn't metre
:11:46. > :11:57.from the Plasticine. Ibarguen doing her best jump. I
:11:58. > :12:04.thought Ibarguen looked ropey. A slight stutter before. She's so
:12:05. > :12:08.tall. She is about 6'2". She looked quite untidy there. Very little
:12:09. > :12:15.rhythm for fluidity to it, but it comes down way out there and I think
:12:16. > :12:21.it is a slight improvement on her 14.76 in round two. The middle phase
:12:22. > :12:25.was a length. There was no length to it. But she can get away with those
:12:26. > :12:35.dimensions and extends her lead. Well, the pole vault continuing. We
:12:36. > :12:41.have seen some going clear. That's another one going clear. Olly
:12:42. > :12:48.Bradshaw who was in such good form in Manchester last week, cleared her
:12:49. > :12:53.opening height. She has retired from the competition, the Briton. That's
:12:54. > :13:04.worrying news from a very good athlete. This is the Olympic
:13:05. > :13:11.champion. Her opening height is 4.65. Very, very business-like,
:13:12. > :13:21.matter of fact. No fuss at all. European champion and then Olympic
:13:22. > :13:26.champion last year, the 27-year-old. Men's sprinting is looking for the
:13:27. > :13:32.next big thing. It was Ronnie Baker's time to shine with Britain's
:13:33. > :13:42.Chijindu Ujah in third. The race was wind assisted, but both men finished
:13:43. > :13:52.in under ten seconds. There is Ronnie Baker. Prior to that he
:13:53. > :14:01.finished second in 9.97 in Kingston in the world challenge meeting down
:14:02. > :14:04.in Jamaica. He's in four. Jimmy Vicaut for has not really produced
:14:05. > :14:09.the results expected of him, the 25-year-old Frenchman. Only seventh
:14:10. > :14:18.in Rio. He has just left his long-term coach. There is Mike
:14:19. > :14:22.Rodgers. A great indoor sprinter. Chijindu Ujah in good form, the
:14:23. > :14:28.former European junior champion at 100. That was back in 2013. He was
:14:29. > :14:39.third. A good run against the best of the Americans in a windy 9.95. So
:14:40. > :14:47.Baker in four. Watch him in fine form. A really good start, but Baker
:14:48. > :14:52.beginning to get into his running. Coming through, Chijindu Ujah.
:14:53. > :14:57.That's a brilliant run. Chijindu Ujah takes it. Against a good, good
:14:58. > :15:06.field. Chijindu Ujah clocking up one of the best wins of his career as a
:15:07. > :15:10.senior athlete and the time 10.02. It might be anything that special.
:15:11. > :15:14.The field that he has beaten Chijindu Ujah, and it is confirmed
:15:15. > :15:18.as a season's best for the Briton. Jimmy Vicaut who looked to be
:15:19. > :15:26.finishing strongly could do nothing about the Briton to his right coming
:15:27. > :15:30.through. Ronnie Baker third. He has taken some big, big scalps there,
:15:31. > :15:31.Chijindu Ujah and that might really start his season, Steve, getting on
:15:32. > :15:41.to a very important roll. He has been running well since his
:15:42. > :15:47.season started and this is just adding to that. He surged really,
:15:48. > :15:57.just maintained his form coming through. Not the best of starts. You
:15:58. > :16:02.thought Baker would come onto that. A good run indoors. But he just does
:16:03. > :16:08.not come on. Jimmy Vicaut probably thought his danger was to his left.
:16:09. > :16:14.But CJ comes through for the win. He has run under ten seconds this year.
:16:15. > :16:19.He is getting closer and closer to getting back to that sub ten seconds
:16:20. > :16:24.form he had a few years ago. It has been a disappointing year or two,
:16:25. > :16:30.particularly last year. But this year he looks in great shape. That
:16:31. > :16:36.is a big win for him. We move now onto the women's triple jump. Rock
:16:37. > :16:40.has is still leading. Nobody has been able to challenge the tall
:16:41. > :16:54.Venezuelan. That is another good jump from her. Really consistent. A
:16:55. > :17:05.very slight following wind. Although the air in the stadium feels very
:17:06. > :17:07.still. That improves. 14.8 four. The last chance for the Olympic
:17:08. > :17:19.champion. Heading for defeat That is close. It does not look
:17:20. > :17:24.quite good enough. You can see the line yourself on there. That is only
:17:25. > :17:31.a guide, but she probably knows. She is waving to the cloud. It is the
:17:32. > :17:37.Venezuelan who will win tonight. Six centimetres short. Is this the
:17:38. > :17:50.handing over of the mantle so to speak. The world number one is
:17:51. > :17:57.powerfully built. Sandy Morris has had a difficult time, the American.
:17:58. > :18:01.Under pressure. She will be really disappointed with that performance
:18:02. > :18:10.tonight. Two attempts to get over two point 40. She now goes out. From
:18:11. > :18:18.the track it is the men's 800 metres, full of real interest. The
:18:19. > :18:24.most intriguing name is Nijel Amos, the Olympic silver-medallist from
:18:25. > :18:37.2012. Is he in any sort of form? He has changed his coaching regime. It
:18:38. > :18:44.is almost as if they go together. He is more of an 800 metres specialist.
:18:45. > :18:56.They have asked for a reasonable pace here. The tour 19-year-old is a
:18:57. > :18:59.talent. A world junior champion. The winner in Shanghai could be the one
:19:00. > :19:07.that everybody else is watching here. Amos on the inside started
:19:08. > :19:16.pretty quickly. The pacemaker on the outside has got a bit fast over this
:19:17. > :19:21.first one. They are settling into a decent pace. But it is a bit quick
:19:22. > :19:27.for me. Not even for me, but for them as well. It is one of the
:19:28. > :19:31.problems if you have an inexperienced pacemaker. He is in a
:19:32. > :19:37.world of his own, enjoying himself, looking great. That is one of the
:19:38. > :19:43.most ridiculous gaps I have seen for a long time. The pack are not even
:19:44. > :19:50.remotely interested. Oh, Amos has gone down. They were so bunched it
:19:51. > :20:05.was going to happen. You are absolutely right. Amos was clipped.
:20:06. > :20:14.But the race is on now. If they catch him here, it will be partly
:20:15. > :20:20.because he went through in 77. The charge is on. He is out in front,
:20:21. > :20:35.but he will be pulling up trees in the home straight. Will he become?
:20:36. > :20:47.He is going to hang on for the win, the Polish worrier. He just got
:20:48. > :20:52.taken by surprise. The race was a mess, Tim. I do not mind that.
:20:53. > :20:56.Sometimes you have to learn to raise and that is what he is always good
:20:57. > :21:03.at. That type of race will play into his hands. But he attacked first and
:21:04. > :21:11.he got the advantage. He ends up with the win. He was a bit tired in
:21:12. > :21:19.the end. Brazier finished quickly as well, but such a messy race. Such a
:21:20. > :21:24.shame to see Amos go down. But the Polish runner retained the metre
:21:25. > :21:28.down the straight. He attacked. He got himself into a decent position
:21:29. > :21:35.down the back straight. He kept looking at the screen. He is a big
:21:36. > :21:55.talent, the 19-year-old. It might be a bit of a lesson for Brazier. That
:21:56. > :21:59.was always likely result. Lewandowski knows where to put
:22:00. > :22:15.himself in those sort of racers. Now we are at the women's high jump.
:22:16. > :22:24.1.80 eight. That is nice. She generates a lot of speed. She is
:22:25. > :22:35.another authorised neutral athlete, in other words are Russian. Plenty
:22:36. > :22:43.of athletes are clear at this height. It is the first attempt for
:22:44. > :23:00.Silva. This might be a little bit of
:23:01. > :23:13.stretch. Do not listen to me. What do I know? Just rattled it slightly.
:23:14. > :23:20.The world champion in Beijing, let's not forget. She seems to have warmed
:23:21. > :23:22.to the competition tonight, the Cuban. That is a seasoned's best for
:23:23. > :23:42.her. 4.70 five. She makes it look easy.
:23:43. > :23:50.Now this is the third and final attempt for the Kiwi. All smiles.
:23:51. > :23:55.You have got to be so positive, you have got to be absolutely on top of
:23:56. > :24:04.it. She is still only 20, the Olympic bronze-medallist. Oh! It
:24:05. > :24:08.stayed up and she gave it such a clatter. I am trying to think of a
:24:09. > :24:15.polite word to describe how lucky she is. That is amazing, and she
:24:16. > :24:25.knows it. A huge sigh of relief. The third and final attempt. To be fair
:24:26. > :24:33.she was mostly clear of it by the time she made contact. The athletes
:24:34. > :24:41.are stripped off and ready for the 400 metres in the Olympic Stadium.
:24:42. > :24:50.It is a solid line-up. MacPherson goes in lane five. She is world
:24:51. > :25:04.champion in the indoor arena. Hastings is going in lane four.
:25:05. > :25:06.Williams is 35 years old. Took bronze medal ten years ago in soccer
:25:07. > :25:32.at World Championships. She has gone off again with full
:25:33. > :25:36.commitment, Hastings. She has moved away from mills in blue. Hastings is
:25:37. > :25:40.so exciting to watch because she throws everything at the first 300
:25:41. > :25:53.metres and plays catch me if you game. But MacPherson is holding her
:25:54. > :25:59.on the back straight. Zelniak is also going well. But they come into
:26:00. > :26:06.the straight. Has Hastings got the legs? She has got a two-metre gap at
:26:07. > :26:11.the moment, but they are coming back at her. Williams Mills is coming
:26:12. > :26:16.through to challenge. Hastings wins this by three metres. An impressive
:26:17. > :26:24.run by the American. I think Williams Mills just comes through to
:26:25. > :26:43.snatch second and Zelniak is third. The record stays very safe. Typical
:26:44. > :26:49.for Hastings. She got off really well and then she checked back. When
:26:50. > :26:56.she came into the straight she just starts to move again. Instead of
:26:57. > :27:03.going through 200 and keeping your foot down and hanging on, she just
:27:04. > :27:11.backed up a little bit. With 50 to go she started to tire, and the
:27:12. > :27:14.others are charging. But she is yet to get going. Yes, there is more to
:27:15. > :27:26.come. The men's javelin has been grabbing
:27:27. > :27:34.everyone's attention this year. There is a great line-up. The former
:27:35. > :27:46.Olympic champion Shaun Walcott is in this as well.
:27:47. > :27:52.This man as well from the Czech Republic is in good form already
:27:53. > :27:58.this year and that is another good start to the competition. Over 85
:27:59. > :28:03.metres. It is kind of dead air tonight and it is warm and mild. It
:28:04. > :28:08.is not as muggy as it sometimes is in Rome, but not a breath of wind
:28:09. > :28:15.out there. That is a good start from him. Britain's 20-year-old Morgan
:28:16. > :28:21.Lake at this third and final attempt. She is the world junior
:28:22. > :28:28.champion from 2014. This is well within her compass and that was a
:28:29. > :28:35.lovely clearance from Morgan Lake. That is a seal of great ability in
:28:36. > :28:40.this competition on that occasion. She looks in really sharp form
:28:41. > :28:48.already this year. When she was banned and the Russian team was
:28:49. > :28:58.banned, she cleared 2.3. It looks as though she is in superb form. The
:28:59. > :29:05.world number one. He looks a bit more optimistic about that one and
:29:06. > :29:16.well he might. 86 metres, something like that. The others are applauding
:29:17. > :29:21.that effort from the German. He did not have the best of the first
:29:22. > :29:38.round. But that is the best so far from Thomas Rohler. The lid is his.
:29:39. > :29:42.The European indoor champion got his world season off to a decent start
:29:43. > :29:47.in Eugene, equalling his personal best in a world-class field. Rome
:29:48. > :29:53.should prove just as tough a test as he lines up against the world record
:29:54. > :29:55.holder and the current and former world champions, all good
:29:56. > :30:04.preparations for an assault on the medals in London. So on the track,
:30:05. > :30:19.the men's 110 metre hurdles. It is a great field here.
:30:20. > :30:25.hurdles Now, Andrew Pozzi of Great Britainment only made the semi in
:30:26. > :30:37.Rio and huge disappointment for him and has massive ambition to do well
:30:38. > :30:39.in the World Championships. The silver-medallist from Rio has
:30:40. > :30:55.been up and down this year. Aries Merritt, 13.12 in Eugene.
:30:56. > :31:06.Fastest since he had his operation, a kidney transplant in 2015. A great
:31:07. > :31:17.story that still. Pozzi gets an excellent start. Merritt. Merritt
:31:18. > :31:24.hangs on! Not only hangs on, moves away at the end. 13.15. Well, I said
:31:25. > :31:29.the story just gets better and better. Well, it's a great story,
:31:30. > :31:43.but you have to carry on commending him. I thought Andy Pozzi twitched
:31:44. > :31:49.badly. You can see Merritt hanging on there. Pozzi, I don't think it
:31:50. > :31:54.was loss of concentration. He lost that concentration hard. That
:31:55. > :32:05.affected him badliment Pozzi third. Second from the top as you're
:32:06. > :32:12.looking at those four. A perfect dip from Aries Merritt. Well, Shubenkov
:32:13. > :32:17.is short of competition. I feel sorry for the fella. He's battling
:32:18. > :32:34.his way back and that was a strong run for him, a third.
:32:35. > :32:48.Stefanidi mansion to get a bit of stickiness on that bar.
:32:49. > :32:55.A grimace from Stefanidi. When you're competing everything goes
:32:56. > :33:02.right for you, but she has the aura of winning and winning. She has the
:33:03. > :33:08.confidence. The others as well then might buckle a little bit behind.
:33:09. > :33:18.Limb prick bronze-medallist, the youngster from New Zealand.
:33:19. > :33:21.McCartney has been at this stage of her career and keeps getting
:33:22. > :33:24.personal bests. But not tonight though, but she will continue to
:33:25. > :33:35.improve. It's still good enough for third place tonight.
:33:36. > :33:42.And Silva now in this pole vault. Third time failure at 4.85, but 4.75
:33:43. > :33:49.gives her a second place on the night. Stefanidi cleared 4.85 as she
:33:50. > :33:53.has every height. Stefanidi is having the bar moved up according to
:33:54. > :34:04.our computers here to 5.07. That would be a new world record. The
:34:05. > :34:21.world indoor champion was fifth in Rio and has a new coach.
:34:22. > :34:39.A slow championship race, 4.33 she was bind the Polish athlete. There
:34:40. > :34:47.there is Cichocka. She is strong. Arafi has got good speed. Tsegay has
:34:48. > :34:50.good strength and recently broke two minutes for 800 metres can you
:34:51. > :34:56.believe? A big field. 18 starters in the
:34:57. > :35:15.women's 1500 metres. The fastest time was in Shanghai a
:35:16. > :35:28.month or so back. Are they going with the pacemaker here?
:35:29. > :35:39.Well, Tim, one athlete got herself slotted in behind the pacemaker. I'm
:35:40. > :35:43.really interested to see the tall leky German. A massive talent. When
:35:44. > :35:48.you start adding this to her cross-country and the strength she
:35:49. > :35:53.has in long-distance. Watch her. Hassan is after it. Well, they come
:35:54. > :35:57.round towards 400 metres and the field seem to be going with this
:35:58. > :36:03.one. The pace is pretty good. The majority of the field have gone
:36:04. > :36:07.through in 64.5, 65 seconds. They're up for this one. Perfect conditions.
:36:08. > :36:12.Hassan in second place. I don't know if she has urged the Romanian out in
:36:13. > :36:15.front to accelerate, but it seems like there has been an acceleration
:36:16. > :36:24.and the German has slotted into third. Hassan gets clipped from
:36:25. > :36:31.behind. She is having a word with Tsegay behind her. The pacemaker
:36:32. > :36:35.just needs to keep it clipping along here as they come towards two laps
:36:36. > :36:39.to go, but the field is stretched out, this big field, because the
:36:40. > :36:53.tempo upfront has remained healthy and they come through below us with
:36:54. > :36:57.two lapse to run and below 1.51. Look at Konstanze Klosterhalfen. She
:36:58. > :37:01.is thinking about going past. I don't think Hassan will mind. Look
:37:02. > :37:04.at there, the German knows what she doesn't have is natural pace, Tim,
:37:05. > :37:21.but she has got such good strength and she is attacking saouf saouf.
:37:22. > :37:26.Hassan. Well, there is no fat on her. The German with 550 metres to
:37:27. > :37:32.run. Really testing this field now with this surge. She went past the
:37:33. > :37:38.pacemaker. Hasson on her shoulder who has got real strength too
:37:39. > :37:45.challenges the German too. The surge is taking them clear. Sado is in
:37:46. > :37:52.fourth place. It is Hassan leading, 2.55 at the bell. This is going to
:37:53. > :37:56.be quick. Konstanze Klosterhalfen in second place. There is a gap back to
:37:57. > :38:01.fifth place, but Hassan here, running the perfect race to drag
:38:02. > :38:07.Konstanze Klosterhalfen the German to a quick time. Konstanze
:38:08. > :38:11.Klosterhalfen is running a massive race. She could run under four
:38:12. > :38:15.minutes. That would be a brilliant performance. Look at Hassan, strong
:38:16. > :38:20.can have didn't and kicks away. She has got this one in the bag. It is a
:38:21. > :38:26.question of how fast. Konstanze Klosterhalfen has lost a lot of
:38:27. > :38:32.ground. She needs to concentrate here and keep the knees up. Hassan
:38:33. > :38:36.does it. She has that awkward round-shouldered style, but what a
:38:37. > :38:41.run from her. The gap is 15 metres. Watch the clock. This is going to be
:38:42. > :38:45.quick. Konstanze Klosterhalfen is hanging on, they are all struggling,
:38:46. > :38:50.but Hassan is in a class of her own. Watch the time, this is quick. My
:38:51. > :38:55.word, in second place coming through was Winny Chebet. I said she was one
:38:56. > :39:00.to watch. Goodness me, second in the world junior 800 a few years ago,
:39:01. > :39:10.Winny Chebet, but she was a distant second despite the quality of her
:39:11. > :39:16.run because the real quality came from the Dutchwoman, Sifan Hassan.
:39:17. > :39:20.It was the way in which Konstanze Klosterhalfen is not frightened of
:39:21. > :39:25.anyone that goes after it. Her best distance might be the 5,000 and
:39:26. > :39:38.maybe even longer because she has got such good pedigree, but under
:39:39. > :39:49.four minutes for the German and for Jebet.
:39:50. > :39:59.Conseslus Kipruto was more than good enough tonight. That's a meeting
:40:00. > :40:06.record. A world lead. 3.56.22. Improving substantially. The women
:40:07. > :40:11.owes pole vault is going on and they are crossing the javelin runway. So
:40:12. > :40:29.they are having to wait for their attempt. There is the lead. It maybe
:40:30. > :40:35.a metre or so beyond that. So the Olympic champion, getting to grips
:40:36. > :40:47.with conditions here and that will extend his lead in the third round.
:40:48. > :40:52.87, 89. This is Stefanidi. Could this be a world record? No, but she
:40:53. > :40:57.had a go. And remains world number one and remains on top in terms of
:40:58. > :41:02.world rankings and indeed, winning competitions. Stefanidi winning
:41:03. > :41:06.again tonight with a world leading 4.85 in the women's pole vault.
:41:07. > :41:10.Attempting the world record. She has got a stretch to get there yet for
:41:11. > :41:14.me. Well, she knows what she is up against. It gives her a prospective
:41:15. > :41:30.on what a world record really means. A-beautiful clearance at 1.96 at the
:41:31. > :41:33.first time of asking and boy, was she clear. There is clearly a great
:41:34. > :41:37.deal more to come. She's making it look easy and making herself look
:41:38. > :41:42.very much like an athlete who should be on top of the world rankings with
:41:43. > :42:00.2.03 from Eugene a couple of weeks back.
:42:01. > :42:07.Levchenko the only one to go clear. The third attempt for her. Clutch
:42:08. > :42:17.jump. It was a pretty good clearance in the end, look at it. Yes, very
:42:18. > :42:23.nice indeed. What can the London 2012 champion
:42:24. > :42:27.do? That's big. That has put the cat amongst the pigeons. I don't think
:42:28. > :42:39.it's the lead, but that's from Walcott, that's a fabulous throw.
:42:40. > :42:43.That is beyond 86 metres. The women's 100 metres.
:42:44. > :43:02.Henry in decent form. For Schippers, it wasn't the
:43:03. > :43:09.Olympics she wanted. Still performing well. Schippers is only
:43:10. > :43:11.24. This year, 10.95 back in April in the States where she prepared for
:43:12. > :43:31.the start of this season. Michelle-Lee Ahye Managing to juggle
:43:32. > :43:37.long jump and the 100 metres. Williams right over in lane two. It
:43:38. > :43:46.is Schippers. It will be Schippers just. Schippers gets it. And just
:43:47. > :43:55.outside, we will wait to see if that gets taken down. Under 11 seconds.
:43:56. > :44:00.The clock stops. In fact Tim, it has been taken to 10.99. It was an OK
:44:01. > :44:05.start. I wouldn't say it was a great start. She had two good starters
:44:06. > :44:10.next to her, but it was Williams who got out so quick over in lane two,
:44:11. > :44:17.but then the real race got going in the medal lanes. Good scrap, wasn't
:44:18. > :44:24.it, between Schippers and Ta Lou. Well, she is a big powerful athlete,
:44:25. > :44:31.Schippers. The 200 is her best event. The start isn't her best. All
:44:32. > :44:35.credit to Ta Lou. She hung on to her. Stayed with her almost stride
:44:36. > :44:39.for stride the hole way down the straight. Just lost out on the final
:44:40. > :44:46.run in and the strength of Schippers taking her clear. A good run from
:44:47. > :44:51.Ahye too. 10.99. Schippers was one of three athletes under 11 seconds
:44:52. > :44:58.this year and she confirms that form with another very, very solid run. A
:44:59. > :45:03.good race that. A really close race. Williams just went for one speed at
:45:04. > :45:09.#30e metres to another at 80, 90, but she did hang on to fifth place,
:45:10. > :45:15.but as Tim was saying, Schippers once more under 11 seconds. T Lou
:45:16. > :45:34.just outside at 11.03. This is the second attempt at two
:45:35. > :45:37.metres. Not giving anything away emotionally, she is staying very
:45:38. > :45:44.detached and focus. That is the first smile we have seen through the
:45:45. > :45:49.evening, frankly. Now the men's javelin. He has had a
:45:50. > :46:00.really poor night. He has been weighed down so far, but that is
:46:01. > :46:07.huge! Well, he has done it again. He is taking the challenge to Thomas
:46:08. > :46:13.Rohler, his team-mate. He had no throw in the fourth round and in the
:46:14. > :46:17.fifth round produces a huge throat. That will take the lead. Goodness
:46:18. > :46:30.me, where did that come from? It takes the lead. This is a strong
:46:31. > :46:42.field. Filippo Tortu of Italy is the world junior silver-medallist. A big
:46:43. > :46:47.talent. But he could struggle against this company, particularly
:46:48. > :46:53.against Andre de Grasse, the Olympic silver-medallist. Just 22 years of
:46:54. > :47:00.age. Only fifth in Doha and then forth in Eugene. Struggling a bit
:47:01. > :47:11.with form perhaps. There is Christophe Lemaitre. 26 years old.
:47:12. > :47:18.He took the bronze in Rio. And very even start initially. Christophe
:47:19. > :47:26.Lemaitre struggled on the band a little bit. Andre de Grasse changes
:47:27. > :47:32.gear and moves away. He is the smallest of all of them, but look at
:47:33. > :47:39.that winning margin. That is the Andre de Grasse we remember from
:47:40. > :47:55.2016. He is finding his racing legs. A class apart. He did all his
:47:56. > :48:05.running from the 90 metres point. That is a three-metre winning margin
:48:06. > :48:08.from Andre de Grasse. Filippo Tortu is getting a big roar from the crowd
:48:09. > :48:17.in the stadium. He finished fourth, a season's record for him and a
:48:18. > :48:21.personal best. A great performance. Look at him out there in lane seven
:48:22. > :48:26.and he was with them coming off the bed. But then you see Andre de
:48:27. > :48:32.Grasse, not changing gear, but maintaining good form. Christophe
:48:33. > :48:38.Lemaitre just sneaks second place. Andre de Grasse is a lovely runner,
:48:39. > :48:42.very relaxed. As far as we know Usain Bolt will not run the 200
:48:43. > :48:47.metres in London and that leaves this event wide open, a really
:48:48. > :48:51.exciting event. This man has the talent to win it, but does he have
:48:52. > :49:01.the mental fortitude and strength to believe he can go on to become world
:49:02. > :49:07.champion? Genzebe Dibaba came up short in her attempt at the 5000
:49:08. > :49:12.metres world record in Eugene and she has not really impressed so far
:49:13. > :49:18.this season. Kenya's Helen Obiri set a lifetime's best over the distance
:49:19. > :49:24.last month. She should provide a tough test for Genzebe Dibaba.
:49:25. > :49:31.Perhaps they could get closer to the world record held by Genzebe
:49:32. > :49:37.Dibaba's sister, Tirunesh Dibaba. It is a tall order at any time. But
:49:38. > :49:43.I suppose if anyone who has got the pedigree to go after it, it is
:49:44. > :49:51.Genzebe Dibaba. The world record is held by Tirunesh Dibaba. That is the
:49:52. > :49:55.full line-up. The big challenge will come from Helen Obiri. There are
:49:56. > :49:59.plenty of good athletes in here. We will probably end up with two races
:50:00. > :50:07.because the pace they have asked for is very quick. Stephanie Twell and
:50:08. > :50:12.Eilish McColgan are going for Great Britain. Consternation at the hotel
:50:13. > :50:21.as to what was being asked for pace wise. The idea is to go out hard and
:50:22. > :50:27.then try and hang on. I am not sure that is the best way to attack this
:50:28. > :50:32.fast time. The problem they have got is to go out as hard as they want to
:50:33. > :50:36.go out and you have to find some good pacemakers and I am not
:50:37. > :50:43.convinced we have got good enough quality pacemakers here tonight. The
:50:44. > :50:47.young athlete who has been asked to do it has a personal best of nine
:50:48. > :50:53.minutes, so you get the idea of the kind of task that will face the
:50:54. > :51:03.pacemakers. We'll Genzebe Dibaba take it on herself? I would think
:51:04. > :51:09.probably not. We will wait and see. We have got two races going on.
:51:10. > :51:14.There is a group of athletes, with the European athletes like Aileen
:51:15. > :51:21.McColgan and Stephanie Twell and they are so detached. There are a
:51:22. > :51:28.few stragglers and then 130 metres behind this pace, and it is a faster
:51:29. > :51:35.pace. I have said that this athlete is not good enough and Genzebe
:51:36. > :51:42.Dibaba has, early enough, decided to have a go. Hats off to her. It is a
:51:43. > :51:45.risky strategy. If she is not in shape to run very fast and run away
:51:46. > :51:53.from the rest of them, she will pay for this because it will be a long
:51:54. > :51:57.run in front for Genzebe Dibaba. Back in this high jump competition.
:51:58. > :52:03.It ends in failure as it does so often in the vertical jumps. One of
:52:04. > :52:07.the great ironies of those disciplines. But what an evening it
:52:08. > :52:22.has been for the Russian jumping here. Neutral athlete, it was
:52:23. > :52:30.comfortable win. This is slowing and slowing. That second 1000 metres
:52:31. > :52:34.when she decided to pick it up and they were already five seconds down
:52:35. > :52:41.on the pace. To have to run this far on your own out in front is a tough
:52:42. > :52:52.ask. She has got Agnes Tirop for company as well. This is not what
:52:53. > :52:58.was billed. But I am just curious, Tim. If you say you are going to go
:52:59. > :53:02.out that hard, you have got to find the pacemaker. She is slowing so
:53:03. > :53:09.much that Helen Obiri goes, enough is enough, I came here to run fast.
:53:10. > :53:15.I am off. Away she goes and suddenly Genzebe Dibaba is in fourth place.
:53:16. > :53:23.They have got five laps to run. Funnily enough, the world record at
:53:24. > :53:29.three kilometres it was eight point 38. But Tirunesh Dibaba, her elder
:53:30. > :53:39.sister, finishes like an absolute train. We are breaking off for the
:53:40. > :53:49.javelin. Thomas Rohler, and his final opportunity. He has hit it!
:53:50. > :53:55.That is fabulous competitive instincts. He knew he needed a
:53:56. > :54:01.bigger effort. So often you get the big effort in the first round or the
:54:02. > :54:14.last round. You know it is the last chance saloon. Thomas Rohler, it is
:54:15. > :54:24.a monstrous effort. It is in neutral air, he is not getting any help on
:54:25. > :54:29.this one, muggy evening. Helen Obiri is really stepping up here tonight.
:54:30. > :54:35.The Olympic silver-medallist has been in great form over the last two
:54:36. > :54:44.years in particular. Her personal best is 14 point two two. She has
:54:45. > :54:53.got an 85-metre lead. She is going to take the bell Inn around 13.13.
:54:54. > :55:01.She needs a 69 last lap. 68 would get her personal best. She is now
:55:02. > :55:09.lapping athletes. 12 are dropping out. Letesenbet Giday is getting
:55:10. > :55:15.into the grid behind. The crowd are rising to her. She looks quite
:55:16. > :55:22.supreme, she has destroyed Genzebe Dibaba. She is lapping good
:55:23. > :55:27.athletes, Helen Obiri. It will be a mighty quick time. It is the manner
:55:28. > :55:37.of the performance that has been special. She is lapping athletes and
:55:38. > :55:45.is lifting this again. Only four athletes have ever run below 14
:55:46. > :55:50.point 20. Heading for the quickest ever 5000 metres and sprinting away.
:55:51. > :56:00.She is watching the clock and is going to win the race. Look at the
:56:01. > :56:05.time. A huge performance from Helen Obiri. Great running from her. I can
:56:06. > :56:09.tell you that Genzebe Dibaba is pretty much jogging and being passed
:56:10. > :56:24.by athletes in the home straight. A Kenyan record. Only three Ethiopians
:56:25. > :56:30.have run quicker. Helen Obiri with a superb run. Agnes Tirop took the
:56:31. > :56:36.second place. The youngster Letesenbet Giday got into third.
:56:37. > :56:42.What a big effort from her as well. Whatever the hype about Genzebe
:56:43. > :56:46.Dibaba, it is hype at the moment. Helen Obiri, running well, running
:56:47. > :56:53.strong, running confident and rewarded with a huge performance.
:56:54. > :56:58.Absolutely. She really did find something in the last lap, still
:56:59. > :57:03.something in the tank for the final circuit of the track. Look at her
:57:04. > :57:17.with her head rocking from side to side, trying desperately to get
:57:18. > :57:23.under 14 stop 20. I have always enjoyed watching her run. A great
:57:24. > :57:28.athlete. Now she is running better than ever. A new Kenyan record for
:57:29. > :57:38.Helen Obiri. A great performance from her. Agnes Tirop ran well to
:57:39. > :57:43.get second place. There were some excellent early-season performances
:57:44. > :57:48.tonight with Helen Obiri and Sifan Hassan and Thomas Rohler. But for
:57:49. > :58:00.most of the Brits it was a disappointing night. But Singin do
:58:01. > :58:08.Pujara got victory against a very good field. The time was less
:58:09. > :58:12.important than the win. CJ could not have given himself a better
:58:13. > :58:16.confidence boost. The athletics action is coming thick and fast on
:58:17. > :58:20.the BBC. This weekend we have two Diamond League meetings to bring
:58:21. > :58:26.you. On Saturday we will have highlights from Oslo. Then it is
:58:27. > :58:30.Stockholm on Sunday night, or next Monday lunchtime on BBC Two. And
:58:31. > :58:35.there is more athletics the following weekend with the European
:58:36. > :58:40.team Championships. Catch a live coverage all weekend on the red
:58:41. > :58:44.button, online and on connected TV. Later tonight we have got live rugby
:58:45. > :58:53.union. That is followed by cricket highlights with a must win match for
:58:54. > :58:57.Australia in the ICC champions Trophy. We will be back with plenty
:58:58. > :59:05.more athletics next week. Until then, goodbye.
