:00:56. > :01:03.Good afternoon, welcome to live coverage on the final day of the
:01:04. > :01:07.World Athletics Championships 2017. Hold the tears. If you weren't
:01:08. > :01:21.watching last night, where were you? Prim adult -- three medals added to
:01:22. > :01:24.the Great British and Irish tally. Steve Cram and Paula Radcliffe are
:01:25. > :01:30.with me. It was a different kind of Super Saturday to five years ago but
:01:31. > :01:34.it was spectacular, wasn't it? Sometimes you think Super Saturday
:01:35. > :01:39.must have been brilliant and in your memory you still have a vision of
:01:40. > :01:43.it, but last night I don't know, certainly in the 4x100 relay I'm
:01:44. > :01:48.trying to commentate against this noise sometimes and it was
:01:49. > :01:52.incredible. Great night, great atmosphere. It's just the drama.
:01:53. > :02:00.These World Championships keep giving. Paula, we have four new
:02:01. > :02:04.superstars now, career defining moment for these guys and everybody
:02:05. > :02:08.here wanted to make sure they remembered this moment. I understand
:02:09. > :02:12.it was very difficult to get out because everybody wanted to absorb
:02:13. > :02:17.that moment. Yes, everybody wanted to celebrate and it's been a long
:02:18. > :02:21.time coming. We have talked a lot at this Championships about the next
:02:22. > :02:26.generation coming through, who are going to look to next. We very much
:02:27. > :02:32.know now where that generation will come. We talked about Eilidh Doyle's
:02:33. > :02:37.motivation speech that she gave to the British team as team captain and
:02:38. > :02:43.she said don't leave the hashtag out there, more to come, because I want
:02:44. > :02:48.it all out on the track. Steve, you were talking this race, as the girls
:02:49. > :02:54.celebrated with their team-mates. They were doing the same as us. Each
:02:55. > :02:59.changeover they got excited, then it went quiet, the next changeover,
:03:00. > :03:06.then Daryl was the only smart one, she was looking at the big screen to
:03:07. > :03:11.see who could get to the line first. Great celebrations. This is the one
:03:12. > :03:20.true bit of team in athletics, the relay. Talk about the British team
:03:21. > :03:23.and Eilidh 's team talk is aimed at everyone individually but this
:03:24. > :03:28.result is a systemic approach to producing a medal which is why we
:03:29. > :03:32.won and the Americans don't. The Americans made a change from the
:03:33. > :03:39.morning to the afternoon, they threw Baker on the top leg. They go who is
:03:40. > :03:46.running fastest, let's put four out there. It is a proper drilled team.
:03:47. > :03:49.The girls and guys work together and win together. I think one of them
:03:50. > :03:55.said we win together we lose together and it was a great example
:03:56. > :03:58.of that lost lives. For me I know sometimes people get mealy-mouthed
:03:59. > :04:04.about relays but they are part of athletics just as much as triple
:04:05. > :04:09.jump or,, or the walks we will see today and it's how you approach that
:04:10. > :04:15.event and we take it seriously. It's not just a nice little add-on at the
:04:16. > :04:22.end. Last night just shows we are good at it. Absolutely, incredible
:04:23. > :04:26.synergy and the women with their brilliant silver. We will have time
:04:27. > :04:30.to talk about that, and all of what happened last night in about an
:04:31. > :04:35.hour's time but we are going to focus on the walks first. The 15km
:04:36. > :04:37.walks for the men and women have already taken place. Here's what
:04:38. > :05:05.happened earlier. The men's was won by Francis Johann of France.
:05:06. > :05:10.Yes, he didn't have a great Olympics last year, he was injured just
:05:11. > :05:12.before it. I don't think he even finished in Rio and it's taken a lot
:05:13. > :05:21.of this year to get himself back together so to take their medal
:05:22. > :05:37.tally to three, they are justifiably proud of that. In the women's race,
:05:38. > :05:45.Ines Enriquez of Portugal. This was another one winning it for Portugal
:05:46. > :05:54.in four hours, five minutes and 56 seconds. Ireland's Robert Heffernan
:05:55. > :05:57.finished in eighth place. Great Britain have a team of five race
:05:58. > :06:06.walkers, Tom Bosworth is the big-name running in the 20km walk.
:06:07. > :06:12.Walking. If he's running he gets disqualified. The whole is getting
:06:13. > :06:18.bigger, let's concentrate on the walking. Chances today? I think
:06:19. > :06:22.realistically Tom has a top aide charms. He knows the Chinese walkers
:06:23. > :06:26.in particular will take it out really fast. I think he was hoping
:06:27. > :06:28.the weather conditions we might see something like Wednesday when it
:06:29. > :06:31.rained all day because he is technically very strong and his
:06:32. > :06:37.technique stays together when he gets tired but he maybe doesn't have
:06:38. > :06:44.the pace we would love him to. He has a chance, a good chance. With
:06:45. > :06:50.the London crowd. I was just going to make that point. If you are in
:06:51. > :06:59.London today, go and cheer Tom on, and Callum as well. Silly things
:07:00. > :07:04.have happened. On paper he should come ninth or tenth, something like
:07:05. > :07:08.that, but disqualifications, the occasion, who knows. If you have
:07:09. > :07:12.plans already to go outside, by all means watch the race live, if you
:07:13. > :07:17.were planning on staying in and watching the race with us, stay
:07:18. > :07:23.where you are. Let's talk about the women's 20km race because it's
:07:24. > :07:35.already under way. They will walk a two kilometre race in all. Britain
:07:36. > :07:40.have Gemma Bridge and Beth and Davis going in this one. The leaders are
:07:41. > :07:45.just past ten kilometres and were going to the centre of London live
:07:46. > :08:42.with your commentator. COMMENTATOR: Actually they are
:08:43. > :08:48.walking a very consistent pace at the moment and that may be obvious.
:08:49. > :08:52.The last two kilometre splits... Let's pause at the moment to check
:08:53. > :08:58.the ten kilometre times. That is the leading group going through, and
:08:59. > :09:05.these are the gaps after that to the chases. Most of those women were
:09:06. > :09:13.prominent in the leading group of 20 for the first five kilometres or so.
:09:14. > :09:24.Then we go into one down. In other words 45 minutes plus. Just looking
:09:25. > :09:30.at the pace, the two kilometre lap times, the last three, coming up to
:09:31. > :09:40.six kilometre it was a .46, coming up to eight kilometres it was 8.41,
:09:41. > :09:44.then at ten kilometres 8.42, so pretty pace. One expects that in
:09:45. > :09:47.race walking because by the very nature of the event you're not going
:09:48. > :09:56.to get the dramatic changes of acceleration you can get of course
:09:57. > :10:00.running. On the right, really struggling to keep going on the back
:10:01. > :10:17.of this leading group. So important to stay with the group.
:10:18. > :10:26.They pretty much remain in almost the same order, not only the group
:10:27. > :10:31.of ten but almost unchanged with the Chinese just behind them. The gap is
:10:32. > :10:48.beginning to open up maybe. It's just beginning to break away,
:10:49. > :11:08.maybe. We are down to eight, let's see if those of the two can keep
:11:09. > :11:20.going. It just looks as if Palmisano is pushing the pace on a bit. They
:11:21. > :11:27.are paying the price. Palmisano has been a very consistent walk a time.
:11:28. > :11:32.She is 33 years of age, eighth, eighth and sixth at three Olympic
:11:33. > :11:43.Games bears testimony to that consistency. This year 's World
:11:44. > :11:49.Championships, she has been sixth, eighth and fourth in the last three
:11:50. > :11:50.editions, amazing consistency. She is there at the back of the park at
:11:51. > :12:10.the moment, tenth place. Murder are the racewalking
:12:11. > :12:15.enthusiasts or tourists looking on. Others wandering on must wonder what
:12:16. > :12:20.they found. It's all about racewalking today. We started with
:12:21. > :12:24.the men's 50 kilometres, we now have the women's 20 kilometres and we
:12:25. > :12:30.will lead onto the men's 20km walk which is due to start at 2:20pm, and
:12:31. > :12:46.it is now, what, just quarter past one here in Britain. And we are down
:12:47. > :12:51.to the leading group of eight. A group of ten who were together for
:12:52. > :13:10.so much of this race, just beginning to split. And a warning.
:13:11. > :13:17.The first five kilometres there was a group of 20, then for much of the
:13:18. > :13:28.race we have seen a group of ten, slowly whittling down. They might be
:13:29. > :13:40.down to six in the moment. Wang just struggling there. So it is Palmisano
:13:41. > :13:57.and Gonzales as has been throughout the race, then Lyu and Wang behind
:13:58. > :14:02.them, De Sena, the Brazilian. We may see some athletes coming through
:14:03. > :14:04.from behind, trying to track these down. Perez of Spain the leader of
:14:05. > :14:28.that trio. 11 kilometres reached in 48.30.
:14:29. > :14:38.Slightly quicker than for the previous one. Palmisano in the blue.
:14:39. > :15:02.Gonzalez in the green and red. Always prominent, never shown at the
:15:03. > :15:08.forefront of the picture, Arenas the Colombian, 23 years of age, steadily
:15:09. > :15:13.making her way up in the rankings. She was 22nd in 2013, 19th in 2015,
:15:14. > :15:32.has every chance of being higher this time.
:15:33. > :15:49.The war of attrition is continuing. Six of them now at the forefront.
:15:50. > :16:01.Behind the two Chinese and the two who led throughout, De Sena
:16:02. > :16:11.Palmisano. Taking advantage of the shade.
:16:12. > :16:28.The Queen I -- the eye of the judges in the centre. They pass 12
:16:29. > :16:42.kilometres. That is the fastest of the race.
:16:43. > :16:53.That is for the leaders. There is a clear gap between them. It is
:16:54. > :17:03.amazing how quickly the gaps can open up. Still a long way to go.
:17:04. > :17:09.Still to see whether they will make a decisive move or whether they will
:17:10. > :17:11.continue this war of attrition. These are the favourites coming into
:17:12. > :17:38.this race. Wang has those warnings and has
:17:39. > :17:42.dropped back a little bit. A study of the Italian, who has been in the
:17:43. > :17:48.lead since just about the whole race, Palmisano. Can she get on the
:17:49. > :18:15.rostrum? Still taking on the water. Keeping
:18:16. > :18:30.hydrated. Chinese sharing it between them.
:18:31. > :18:39.Just one disqualification that we've seen so far. They are on two
:18:40. > :18:57.warnings. Kovacs has got two warnings. Of the
:18:58. > :19:24.leaders, just one red showing and that is Lyu. Gonzalez is concerned
:19:25. > :19:30.that she is doing very well indeed. Palmisano next to her. Davies is
:19:31. > :19:41.doing really well, the leading British athlete. Went through ten K.
:19:42. > :19:48.She is really out on her own. It doesn't help but she is
:19:49. > :19:53.concentrating on what she is doing. Davies and Gemma Bridge are the
:19:54. > :20:54.British athletes. The Chinese are all pretty young.
:20:55. > :21:04.Lyu, 23-year-old, has those medals. We have another youngster of 23.
:21:05. > :21:16.Palmisano is 26. Quite a young contingent in this leading pack.
:21:17. > :21:20.Arsena is very much the oldest at 32. She was seventh in the Olympic
:21:21. > :21:31.Games last year. Partner of one of the leading
:21:32. > :22:13.protagonists of the 50 K walk. One hour into the race and we have a
:22:14. > :22:23.pack of six walkers. Palmisano, two Chinese athletes, Arsena of Brazil.
:22:24. > :22:25.That is the leading pack. One hour into a race that will take less than
:22:26. > :23:14.90 minutes. The speed has indeed increased.
:23:15. > :23:28.Those leaders gradually increasing the temple all the time.
:23:29. > :23:40.Well, Yang has moved to the front. Is it significant or is it a brief
:23:41. > :23:46.moment? Gonzalez is closing the gap, as is the favourite. But we do seem
:23:47. > :23:54.to have another one falling off the back. The Colombian suddenly finds
:23:55. > :24:02.herself six or seven metres down so maybe we are down to five. That
:24:03. > :24:09.little bursts. Now there is a tough battle to see if they can close that
:24:10. > :24:13.gap. On her own in seventh place. We saw her struggling to hold on to the
:24:14. > :24:31.back but now she has gone ahead. She is fighting gap and has
:24:32. > :24:49.recaptured the top group. First sign of weakness.
:24:50. > :25:02.Arenas is just behind. Unlike in the men's race, we have not seen any of
:25:03. > :25:09.this. Just taking a cheque to the backmarkers. We have still got the
:25:10. > :25:29.Kazakhstan racers at the back of the field.
:25:30. > :25:45.Quaker gap back -- quite a gap back. Great tradition of walking in
:25:46. > :25:54.Russia, which has been blighted by the doping scandals.
:25:55. > :26:05.She battled hard. The youngster. She is our third disqualification. She
:26:06. > :26:24.fought so hard but has had to yield. We've lost her. In seventh place at
:26:25. > :26:32.the time. Yang showing prominently again. At the back of the group,
:26:33. > :26:54.those two. One hour in five minutes into the
:26:55. > :27:42.race. A little over 20 minutes until we come to the conclusion.
:27:43. > :28:49.There is a gap ever opening. Walking in sixth place here. See how far
:28:50. > :29:06.back she is from those top five. Passing through the 15 K point. The
:29:07. > :29:13.tenth and 11th, the two Spaniards have gone through. That is a minute
:29:14. > :29:48.and a half from the leaders. They are followed.
:29:49. > :29:52.Borovska has been disqualified. We are whittling the field down from 60
:29:53. > :30:09.competitors with some disqualifications. Up and down this
:30:10. > :30:13.to kilometre course on the Mall. The judges keeping a close check on what
:30:14. > :30:20.is happening. In some ways it is a pity that the walkers no longer go
:30:21. > :30:26.on a route through a major city is used see in the championships. On
:30:27. > :30:31.the other hand this is very friendly for spectators and it provides every
:30:32. > :30:40.opportunity for the judges to keep a close track on the competitors.
:30:41. > :30:55.There is some mapping going on now. -- lapping. Less than 20 minutes to
:30:56. > :31:00.go before the conclusion of this race. At the moment one would say
:31:01. > :31:12.the medallists look to be between this group of five. There is Arenas
:31:13. > :31:22.now, a lonely sixth. Other women still going through that 15km point,
:31:23. > :31:25.we have just seen the American going through in 20 Eighth Place, and
:31:26. > :31:47.Bethan Davies has just passed that point as well.
:31:48. > :31:53.Lyu going across to collect a drink, while the others did not at that
:31:54. > :32:06.station. Then going back to rejoin them. Gonzalez, the Olympic
:32:07. > :32:24.silver-medallist, leads. Lyu, the Olympic bronze-medallist. Palmisano,
:32:25. > :32:38.fourth in the Olympics. The newcomer, Yang of China. We have
:32:39. > :32:50.most of the leading protagonists from the last couple of years of
:32:51. > :32:55.women's racewalking. Here is Perez, and Madarasz of Hungary moving up
:32:56. > :33:17.the field nicely. This is Borovska of the view -- the
:33:18. > :33:22.Ukraine, who was in a prominent place. It is sad. Most events on the
:33:23. > :33:29.track and field programme you can complete and if it doesn't go well
:33:30. > :33:35.for you you can still compete, but not so in this. The Kazakhstan
:33:36. > :33:48.athletes have been at the back of the park nearly all the way. Repina
:33:49. > :33:50.was in 50 Sixth Place. The leaders are doing the laps now in little
:33:51. > :34:15.over eight minutes. For most of the way it has been
:34:16. > :34:17.Palmisano and Gonzalez side-by-side. Flanked by the Chinese athletes in
:34:18. > :34:47.the red vests. China with a great record of course
:34:48. > :34:52.in the women's racewalking. In the history of the World Championships
:34:53. > :35:03.they have had three gold-medallists, three silver, two bronze and in
:35:04. > :35:13.Beijing two years ago we had Lyu Hong winning. She also won back in
:35:14. > :35:21.2011, and if we go further back it was Lyu Hong Hu, similar name but
:35:22. > :35:26.different athlete. They must be glad we don't have the searing
:35:27. > :35:42.temperatures they experienced in Seville. The championship record
:35:43. > :35:51.goes way back to 2005, Ivanova in Helsinki. Helsinki had some notable
:35:52. > :35:55.rain at some stages, a torrential rainstorm caused a delay for a
:35:56. > :36:03.couple of hours in the Olympic Stadium, and they had to retreat to
:36:04. > :36:14.the back of the stance. That day, we came back again and the rain didn't
:36:15. > :36:23.last as long as it did. Last week we had persistent rain throughout the
:36:24. > :36:28.day. Now then, is Palmisano beginning to drop back? We may be
:36:29. > :36:38.down to three, the two Chinese and Gonzalez but I wouldn't write off
:36:39. > :36:42.Palmisano yet. It looks for the moment as if the leading trio are
:36:43. > :36:52.trying to get away, that's hard to sign the others struggling harder.
:36:53. > :37:02.There is the disqualified athletes. There's two raids against the
:37:03. > :37:07.Australian, Hungarian, and then these are the athletes with one,
:37:08. > :37:22.which does include one of our leaders, Wang. Gemma Bridge also has
:37:23. > :37:27.one red against her name. So too does Repina, who we just saw lapped.
:37:28. > :37:35.A little over ten minutes to go and we have a group of five. This is a
:37:36. > :37:44.very different story, the men's 50 kilometres walk was won by the
:37:45. > :37:53.Frenchman excelling with the fastest time ever recorded, three hours 33
:37:54. > :38:11.minutes. Very different story in this race
:38:12. > :38:15.where the women are closely bunched. The gaps are definitely down and we
:38:16. > :38:22.may be down to three to fight the medals. We will see. Palmisano,
:38:23. > :38:39.narrowing the gap quickly, but it does look as if the Brazilian, De
:38:40. > :38:53.Sena is falling back and will be fighting hard to get back. The
:38:54. > :39:04.favourite, Lyu, tucks in behind her compatriot. The question is can De
:39:05. > :39:14.Sena get back again? They have passed through 16, 17 kilometres
:39:15. > :39:21.now, reached in 1:14:03. We are going to get some good times from
:39:22. > :39:25.these leaders. Enjoying, I hope, as best you can when you are exerting
:39:26. > :39:40.yourself as much as that in these conditions in London. Here they
:39:41. > :39:58.come, to pass some more lapped walkers. Wang, having a look at her
:39:59. > :40:05.watch. The last kilometre in 4.12. Gradually increasing all the time.
:40:06. > :40:10.Gonzalez and Palmisano, so prominent in the early stages of this race.
:40:11. > :40:21.Rejoined after taking the water on board by the Chinese athletes, Lyu
:40:22. > :40:52.and Wang. Palmisano definitely struggling again.
:40:53. > :41:04.Now then, Palmisano seems to be struggling once again. We have
:41:05. > :41:07.noticed this for the last or two. It looks like it might be between the
:41:08. > :41:18.two Chinese athletes and the Mexican. Palmisano is nothing if not
:41:19. > :41:22.a fighter, she is determined to get it back but the gap is opening up
:41:23. > :41:32.every stride it seems at the moment. And it is Gonzalez and Lyu and Wang.
:41:33. > :41:43.Palmisano on the right there. The picture shortens the gap of course.
:41:44. > :41:58.De Sena and Arenas dropped off the leading group. Palmisano something
:41:59. > :41:59.like 12 metres now, and it is Wang pushing on. Round they go past
:42:00. > :42:36.Buckingham Palace. About 1.27, I think, a shade
:42:37. > :42:51.quicker. Going past the Australian there. There is Palmisano, but it is
:42:52. > :43:11.the trio, it is the Chinese athletes, Yang and Lyu, together
:43:12. > :43:12.with Gonzalez of Mexico. Yang, Down the youngest of the Chinese
:43:13. > :43:34.athletes. Gonzalez still taking on water in
:43:35. > :43:39.these last minutes of the race. The Chinese seeking to add to their
:43:40. > :43:48.medal haul. It's been a good day for the Far East already with two medals
:43:49. > :43:52.going to Japan in the men's race. Gonzalez hoping to uphold the
:43:53. > :44:00.tradition of Mexican walking, mostly retained by the men in the past.
:44:01. > :44:09.Indeed they have not won a medal in the women's race, their highest
:44:10. > :44:15.place being sixth before. So can it be Mexico's first medal? It looks
:44:16. > :44:19.set to be, certainly, their first gold. The Chinese have always been
:44:20. > :44:31.prepared to hang slightly back off the leaders. That was Palmisano and
:44:32. > :44:43.Gonzalez for much of the race. There is Claire Tallent. Gonzalez still
:44:44. > :44:51.wearing that agonised expression. Lee, on the left, lapped. Focusing
:44:52. > :45:00.on keeping their walking gait, keeping away from the judges'
:45:01. > :45:08.displeasure. Maintaining this increased tempo towards the closing
:45:09. > :45:10.stages. They are not far away now. There's three absolutely locked
:45:11. > :45:20.together, this will be one of the closest finishes in history. It was
:45:21. > :45:26.close of course in Beijing when both finished with the same time.
:45:27. > :45:44.It looks like Lyu is in serious trouble. There are three red against
:45:45. > :45:54.her. She does not know it yet. There are three red is for lost contact
:45:55. > :46:02.showing on our screen. Palmisano has one card. Gonzalez touching the
:46:03. > :46:11.barrier. This could be one of those occasions when an athlete crosses
:46:12. > :46:19.the line and learns of their disqualification after. Here they
:46:20. > :46:23.come round the bend. Past Buckingham Palace again. Pushing on hard. Lyu
:46:24. > :46:38.might not know that she's serious trouble. This could be the moment.
:46:39. > :46:52.Coming into the closing stages, we could have a fascinating, epic
:46:53. > :47:00.finish. Lyu on the right but with three red is against her name. The
:47:01. > :47:06.Mexican trying to keep pace with the Chinese, it does not look like she
:47:07. > :47:16.can. There could be a change in those positions. Palmisano may not
:47:17. > :47:30.know it but could yet be in line for a medal. Yang going clear. Could
:47:31. > :47:46.well be on her way to gold. Coming into the finishing straight. Fine
:47:47. > :47:54.finish. Yang it is. Lyu has been stopped. We knew it. The gold goes
:47:55. > :48:10.to Yang. And insight of the finish, after
:48:11. > :48:23.Gonzales, Lyu has been stopped. It was a very fast time. Yang can
:48:24. > :48:32.celebrate for China but it was a tragic end for her compatriot Lyu.
:48:33. > :48:54.Coming in in fourth is the Brazilian, De Sena. Gonzalez is so
:48:55. > :49:10.prominent throughout. Has achieved a medal for Mexico. The first woman to
:49:11. > :49:26.win one for Mexico in walking Championship history. There is the
:49:27. > :49:37.finish of the 20 K walk. Takes the gold fractionally ahead of the
:49:38. > :49:48.Mexican, Gonzalez, and there are the medallists joining in with that
:49:49. > :49:58.dramatic disqualification. Early on in this race we have a pack of 20.
:49:59. > :50:09.After it was down to ten. Gradually whittled down. Yang it was with a
:50:10. > :50:18.little burst fairly early on, pushed on to achieve a very narrow victory.
:50:19. > :50:28.A great day for Portugal. Finishing in sixth place. She will have been
:50:29. > :50:46.delighted that her compatriot won in a world record time.
:50:47. > :51:08.Garcia of Peru finishing in seventh place.
:51:09. > :51:24.Wang Na crossing the line next. Then we have Perez, so that is two
:51:25. > :51:27.Spaniards in the top ten. Just inside the 90 minute standard for
:51:28. > :52:08.the woman. So, congratulations to China's Yang.
:52:09. > :52:19.But a bit of late drama for the British fans. Didn't see that coming
:52:20. > :52:23.from Lyu. She did not see it either! She did but she was trying to
:52:24. > :52:27.pretend. One that sticks in my mind was Jean Southall, when she was
:52:28. > :52:36.leading the Olympic race in Sydney and was disqualified in front of a
:52:37. > :52:42.packed stadium, inside the stadium. It is something that they've got to
:52:43. > :52:46.factor in. They've got to get their heads around the fact that not only
:52:47. > :52:52.can injury destroyer race, you can be disqualified because the more
:52:53. > :53:01.tired you get, you cannot hold your form. She will have seen that she
:53:02. > :53:08.was on two warnings. Once you've started to make mistakes you are
:53:09. > :53:09.more likely to keep making them. She was so close. That is the
:53:10. > :53:28.heartbreak. And for Palmisano, she did not know
:53:29. > :53:32.until she crossed the line. Bitter disappointment followed by huge
:53:33. > :53:38.relief. We will talk about Tom Bosworth in the men's race at
:53:39. > :53:45.2:20pm. But it means that we have time to talk about last night. I
:53:46. > :53:55.think the Hall of London was alive with excitement after Great
:53:56. > :53:57.Britain's men's team won a gold medal in the 4x100 relay. Colin
:53:58. > :54:03.Jackson thought that they were definitely going to win it. And they
:54:04. > :54:08.did. So did I! I predicted it. I was the only one who predicted it.
:54:09. > :54:17.Totally wishful thinking but it came true for me. Here is what happened.
:54:18. > :54:20.Great Britain have seen the women do a lap of honour for their silver
:54:21. > :54:36.medal. They will be inspired. He's stood like a colossus over his
:54:37. > :54:41.sport for so long and the final moment has come. Great Britain, it
:54:42. > :54:48.is all nothing. Never won the world title.
:54:49. > :54:54.Safely away, CJ Ujah has made a great start.
:54:55. > :55:01.Jamaica made a great start and studied USA by Great Britain are
:55:02. > :55:04.leading. Adam Gemili leading brilliant way down the back
:55:05. > :55:11.straight. He will give it to Danny Talbot. In Britain still leading.
:55:12. > :55:22.Yoann Blake at the front but Great Britain are in front! Away he goes!
:55:23. > :55:26.The USA, coming back, it is going to be gold!
:55:27. > :55:58.Great Britain have won the gold medal! Mitchell-Blake, that was
:55:59. > :56:01.phenomenal. That is just amazing. Everything came together. This was a
:56:02. > :56:09.perfect race. Are gold-medallists of the night. Here they are, the new
:56:10. > :56:13.world champions. We worked so hard, the guys behind the scene, the whole
:56:14. > :56:18.of British athletics. And it is great to win it in London, our
:56:19. > :56:23.hometown. Amazing. The feelings, the emotions, the euphoria, I am trying
:56:24. > :56:31.to register that we are world champions. It was sensational,
:56:32. > :56:38.wasn't it? Everybody watching who might not have had a chance to be in
:56:39. > :56:44.here, described the sound. It was huge. There was only one place to be
:56:45. > :56:49.last night. Watching that on a screen or watching that in the
:56:50. > :56:55.stadium. You could hear everyone holding their breath is. That final
:56:56. > :57:05.bets, the excitement, you cannot describe it. As I was making my way
:57:06. > :57:09.home, it was the kind of thing I was thinking, the whole nation,
:57:10. > :57:14.everybody was out on the street, everybody was really enjoying it.
:57:15. > :57:20.Because it was unexpected coming into the championships, it was
:57:21. > :57:23.supposed to be about Mo Farah, but we were witnessing of the birth of
:57:24. > :57:29.the track team in Great Britain that could do serious damage going
:57:30. > :57:37.forward. Not just the men. The men won the gold. They were the heroes
:57:38. > :57:40.of the night. It set it up perfectly, the girls getting silver.
:57:41. > :57:43.They will have seen that and they will have known that and they will
:57:44. > :57:48.have bought, we got to go out and prove ourselves. They work together
:57:49. > :57:51.as a team. They all work together in the camps, they support each other
:57:52. > :57:56.through the tough times and then they get to celebrate together in
:57:57. > :58:00.the good times. It was so nice that they both got on the podium. The
:58:01. > :58:04.youngsters getting through, they've got a big future ahead of them. I'm
:58:05. > :58:15.sure it was a huge celebration that they all enjoyed last night. Let's
:58:16. > :58:19.look at the women's race. They are such a tight unit. They are friends
:58:20. > :58:27.and they go through the motions. They really enjoy being on the track
:58:28. > :58:32.together. They do. They are a really big team and they work together so
:58:33. > :58:40.much. That is reflected in the changeover is going so well. It is
:58:41. > :58:44.really rare. If the men get a baton round they are likely to get a
:58:45. > :58:54.medal. Women take less risks but they are equally as well drilled as
:58:55. > :58:59.the men. They barely make a mistake. It was so good to see them back up
:59:00. > :59:03.last year's result and then stay out, that footage of them staying to
:59:04. > :59:07.watch the men get the gold medal was really special. It showed how tight
:59:08. > :59:16.this group is. You mentioned that they are still so young. They backed
:59:17. > :59:19.up bronze with silver medal. We opened up the programme talking
:59:20. > :59:22.about super Saturday and the fact that five years ago there was the
:59:23. > :59:28.culmination of all that hard work, three guys in the peak of their
:59:29. > :59:33.lives, creating that special moment. Maybe last night we saw the
:59:34. > :59:39.beginning of the future of British track athletics. They witnessed
:59:40. > :59:47.potentially the next five years. Maybe behind the scenes you have
:59:48. > :59:52.kids in the stands, maybe carrying the baskets, they will be inspired
:59:53. > :59:56.by what happened and that is the story of the sport. People take time
:59:57. > :59:59.to come through and sometimes it is a little bit of luck. It is these
:00:00. > :00:07.moments that give them the confidence to go forward. These are
:00:08. > :00:10.not relay teams that goal, we are now gold-medallists, we will leave
:00:11. > :00:15.it at that. People who are knocking on the door of individual gold
:00:16. > :00:20.medals, that will give them the confidence going forward. It was
:00:21. > :00:24.nice to see Adam Gemili after not being selected in an individual
:00:25. > :00:29.event, playing a pivotal role in giving them that lead that they held
:00:30. > :00:34.onto. So much talent. They are on the back of all the newspapers.
:00:35. > :00:39.Let's have a look at one of them. They are the men of the future. Like
:00:40. > :00:43.we said, and night they will have celebrated and remembered for many
:00:44. > :00:48.years to come. It was supposed to be Mo Farah on the back of the papers.
:00:49. > :00:56.close of course in Beijing when both finished with the same time.
:00:57. > :01:03.Yesterday didn't go quite as planned and it was a very different result
:01:04. > :01:08.for Mo Farah, we join it after 3000 metres.
:01:09. > :01:15.Of all people, it is the Australian trying to move things on, maybe
:01:16. > :01:25.inspired by Pearson. This is a real injection of pace for the first time
:01:26. > :01:34.but of course Mohammed won't worry about Tiernan. He will keep an eye
:01:35. > :01:42.on it but won't jump in behind him. He moved to the outside when he was
:01:43. > :01:49.being lapped by Mo Farah and made a mistake in the previous race.
:01:50. > :01:54.Tiernan there running steadily, he won't be able to last at that place.
:01:55. > :01:58.They come round into the straight and it is four laps to go. The
:01:59. > :02:07.tension is increasing. We don't know how fast so these athletes are in a
:02:08. > :02:13.slow race. Mo is controlling the group and they are doing what he
:02:14. > :02:16.wants them to do. The pace starts to pick up so there is a Brit at the
:02:17. > :02:23.front of the group and one towards the back. Farah where we would want
:02:24. > :02:29.him all to be, controlling things. Even physically making sure they are
:02:30. > :02:34.not going to intimidate him. Varies Andrew Butchart in another global
:02:35. > :02:42.final here, chasing his team-mate, chasing Mo Farah. They are all doing
:02:43. > :02:46.that at the moment. Kejelcha is dangerous in his finish. It is
:02:47. > :02:53.building gradually, no big sprint yet. It still isn't very quick but
:02:54. > :03:06.the dangers are collecting at the front. Just behind Mo Farah is
:03:07. > :03:14.Chelimo, the American, also Kejelcha and the Kenyan. Mo is closing down.
:03:15. > :03:18.He looks up a lot at the screen, he's looking around him and he knows
:03:19. > :03:22.who's there. The other night when I was talking to him after the
:03:23. > :03:27.10,000m, I said to him were you nervous at any point and he said no,
:03:28. > :03:32.I was counting them up, thinking he cannot beat me in a sprint finish,
:03:33. > :03:35.he cannot beat me in a sprint finish, getting more confident.
:03:36. > :03:42.Hopefully that's what's happening to him now. Two and a half laps to go
:03:43. > :03:46.and this is where Mo Farah has shown he's the best in the world in
:03:47. > :03:51.closing a race from this point. Nobody has been able to find a way
:03:52. > :04:00.to get past him long enough to stay out there and snatch the win away
:04:01. > :04:04.from him. Tiernan will see the two laps to go marker and tell his
:04:05. > :04:09.grandchildren one day I was 15 metres ahead of Mo Farah in the
:04:10. > :04:13.World Championship final with two laps to go, but I'm not sure it will
:04:14. > :04:20.stay that way. They will all want to kick but nobody will want to go past
:04:21. > :04:25.Farah. They are lining up behind Mo Farah and closing down quickly. Now
:04:26. > :04:29.the race is on. Mo Farah relaxing as much as he can and he doesn't want
:04:30. > :04:40.to let anyone past him now. I think his tactics will be hold off any
:04:41. > :04:49.move. Andrew Butchart coming along the outside, trying to get involved.
:04:50. > :04:52.They pass Tiernan. Two men of Great Britain, wearing the vests. The
:04:53. > :05:00.stadium is rocking to the beat set by Mo Farah and Andrew Butchart.
:05:01. > :05:08.Kejelcha, moving up onto his shoulder. And he's trying to make a
:05:09. > :05:18.move. Can Mo respond? He's got to be careful here, Kejelcha stretching.
:05:19. > :05:22.The crowd response, Edris response. Now Mo has got to control this run
:05:23. > :05:28.and get himself into a position where he can go for it now. He has
:05:29. > :05:37.never won from this position, he's under real pressure. He still in
:05:38. > :05:46.touch, closing slightly. Chelimo is coming as well. Mo Farah has got to
:05:47. > :05:51.try to muster a sprint. Chelimo is coming. Does he wait for the inside
:05:52. > :05:59.gap? He's boxed, he's got no room. Here comes Farah, he's got to find
:06:00. > :06:04.some room on the inside but Edris was going to take the medal. It's
:06:05. > :06:11.going to be Ethiopia at last. Mo Farah fights for the silver!
:06:12. > :06:17.So the silver medal for Mo Farah at the end of last night's five
:06:18. > :06:24.kilometres, you can see what it took out of them. Let's see what
:06:25. > :06:28.Silverman to him. He was able to get up, he still had a smile on his face
:06:29. > :06:33.when he took the silver medal. Eventually he shared that moment
:06:34. > :06:37.with his family and the 60,000 strong crowd last night. It wasn't
:06:38. > :06:45.the way he wanted things to end and a few hours later, it got even more
:06:46. > :06:51.emotional for Mo Farah. There is nothing not to be said, history
:06:52. > :06:58.doesn't lie. It is real hard work and dedication. Year after year.
:06:59. > :07:02.Sometimes I find it bizarre how certain people write certain things
:07:03. > :07:12.to be able to suit how they want to sell the story. The fact is, it is
:07:13. > :07:17.what it is. And you know what I have achieved this through hard work.
:07:18. > :07:22.Sometimes you guys get to me at certain times because you never
:07:23. > :07:27.write the fact. The fact is over the years I have achieved through my
:07:28. > :07:35.hard work, through hard work and pain. If there was something as I
:07:36. > :07:46.crossed my line, as I said in the first interview, it's like a broken
:07:47. > :07:51.record repeating itself. It's like I've achieved what I have achieved
:07:52. > :07:58.and then you are trying to destroy it. It's like, OK.
:07:59. > :08:04.Mo Farah at a press conference today, alluding to questions asked
:08:05. > :08:10.about him, his biological passport and his coach, Alberto Salazar, and
:08:11. > :08:16.you could see how disappointed he was but that was the last note
:08:17. > :08:21.people had to say about him. Yes, and I can see exactly how he would
:08:22. > :08:25.be. Everybody works hard, everybody trying to compete in a World
:08:26. > :08:30.Championships works very hard, but when you have worked hard and then
:08:31. > :08:35.have the questions asked time and time again, it must be frustrating.
:08:36. > :08:40.He's the person who really knows, and he knows that and it is question
:08:41. > :08:51.Time after time, it must be hard. Maybe he hasn't helped himself
:08:52. > :08:54.either in terms of he hasn't been open with the media, he wouldn't do
:08:55. > :08:56.interviews or speak to people because he's not comfortable in that
:08:57. > :08:58.situation. He's much more comfortable just doing his talking
:08:59. > :09:00.on the track but it kind of comes with the territory. When the
:09:01. > :09:04.questions are there, you have to address them and give answers to
:09:05. > :09:09.them. I guess like Usain Bolt finishing his 4x100 metres on the
:09:10. > :09:15.track last night, it is not the way the public will necessarily remember
:09:16. > :09:26.him, and it is a silver added to the gold medal he won a week before.
:09:27. > :09:32.Here is how Mo's major medals looks and for anyone that isn't bad. No,
:09:33. > :09:37.he's the most dedicated British sports person, probably globally,
:09:38. > :09:41.not including relays or anything like that. How he has amassed that
:09:42. > :09:46.and the dominance he has enjoyed over the rest of the field, that
:09:47. > :09:50.kind of magic spell he has almost cast over them, and it has taken
:09:51. > :09:54.five years to work out how to beat him. They beat him when he was tired
:09:55. > :09:58.on the night and right at the end of his career so it's almost like a
:09:59. > :10:04.mirror image except one is in the tenth and one is in the five. In the
:10:05. > :10:14.beginning he didn't quite believe enough or have that domination over
:10:15. > :10:18.everybody. Now he was tired, and maybe in the end he always talks
:10:19. > :10:21.about the slow race being his best race and his best chance for
:10:22. > :10:25.finishing strong but maybe it would have suited him better if it had
:10:26. > :10:28.been a little bit quicker earlier on.
:10:29. > :10:33.Very quickly, we will see him on the road at stadiums like this will miss
:10:34. > :10:38.Mo Farah, it will be very different. Yes, but I think the next generation
:10:39. > :10:51.will come in and this Championships should never be looked at as, oh,
:10:52. > :10:53.this is sad because it's the last championships for Usain Bolt or Mo
:10:54. > :10:56.Farah, Greg Rutherford couldn't be here. It should be looked at as a
:10:57. > :10:59.celebration of the new stars coming through, and our boys and girls in
:11:00. > :11:03.the relay and what's still to come. So much more to look forward to
:11:04. > :11:07.including Tom Bosworth in the men's 20 kilometres hoping to add to the
:11:08. > :11:12.medal tally today. The man has great memories of racing in London. I felt
:11:13. > :11:21.a lot of pressure going into that race. The nose in -- the noise in
:11:22. > :11:26.those last two laps, I want to go and do it again, it was that
:11:27. > :11:36.special. The feeling is incredible, I wish I could bottle that up. I had
:11:37. > :11:41.no idea I could go that quickly. When I saw the clock, as you can see
:11:42. > :11:50.from my reaction, I couldn't believe how far under the time I was.
:11:51. > :11:56.Smashed it! A new world best. It has been a phenomenal two or three years
:11:57. > :12:01.for you in terms of the progress you have made, and Rio was a step in
:12:02. > :12:05.that. I was never this world-class junior athlete, it's taken a long
:12:06. > :12:09.time to develop its longer and faster and now I've finished in the
:12:10. > :12:14.top eight in the Olympic Games. Is worth really stretching the field
:12:15. > :12:20.out now. In London I just want to back up what I did in Rio, that was
:12:21. > :12:24.a complete shock. I finished about 30 places higher than I was ranked.
:12:25. > :12:29.Showing I'm a top eight athlete is what I want to do, and maybe this
:12:30. > :12:35.year on home turf who knows. Given what you have said, what do you need
:12:36. > :12:40.to do to go to the next stage? Year on year, I have ever done is try to
:12:41. > :12:44.train better, eat better and become more consistent. Getting that bit
:12:45. > :12:52.faster. I've done more altitude this year so I'm trying to look for the
:12:53. > :12:55.1% s. And you will have this opportunity on the streets of London
:12:56. > :13:00.in front of the home crowd, what do you think that will be like? I'm
:13:01. > :13:07.hoping it will be the best day of my life. I missed London 2012 by nine
:13:08. > :13:11.seconds qualifying time so it was agony for me. Now we are here but I
:13:12. > :13:17.never dreamt I would be a contender on the day. I have said it before,
:13:18. > :13:22.it's like the 12th man in football, having the home crowd behind you.
:13:23. > :13:26.For me it is so inspiring and I hope I can inspire others and put the
:13:27. > :13:32.performance in. Is there a danger you can get carried away with the
:13:33. > :13:36.occasion? Yes, it is a 20km race, I cannot go flying off at the
:13:37. > :13:41.beginning. Something I'm quite proud of is I'm mentally strong so I can
:13:42. > :13:46.put the nerves to one side, focus on the job in hand, and when the
:13:47. > :13:51.crowds, when I need their help, that is when I tune into them and
:13:52. > :13:54.hopefully they will help me home. You have talked about altitude and
:13:55. > :13:59.your training, you are very much part of the endurance community now.
:14:00. > :14:05.You come on camps with Mo and the rest of the guys. How important has
:14:06. > :14:15.that been for you? I have loved it. For me personally racewalking, it's
:14:16. > :14:20.been like coming into the team, and when you're away from home it makes
:14:21. > :14:24.life easier and the environment more enjoyable. Just spending time with
:14:25. > :14:29.these people, training with them and seeing I work just as hard as they
:14:30. > :14:35.do, and they can relate. It is not the strange event that no one knows
:14:36. > :14:38.anything about. You are leading the way and your performance in Rio must
:14:39. > :14:42.have helped in terms of that exposure. Do you feel as though you
:14:43. > :14:48.cannot concentrate on being as good a race walker as you can be, you
:14:49. > :14:52.have to be a flag bearer as well? Yes, I said recently it's nice
:14:53. > :14:56.there's other guys and girls coming through now. Five qualified for
:14:57. > :15:00.London but they are not just good, they are getting world-class
:15:01. > :15:07.already, a lot quicker than I did so that's great. I will end up being
:15:08. > :15:10.beaten soon enough by another Brit and that's great for the event. For
:15:11. > :15:13.me it's great because I got to that point where I'm world-class and for
:15:14. > :15:17.them to beat me, they have to be world-class. I'm pleased I started
:15:18. > :15:23.that journey for racewalking and the depth will grow and grow.
:15:24. > :15:33.Steve Cram asking the questions the very hopeful Tom Boswell. To keep
:15:34. > :15:41.you up-to-date with the women's 20 kilometres race, the British runners
:15:42. > :15:49.in -- walkers in 28 and 40. Tom Bosworth, we saw him in the
:15:50. > :15:57.anniversary games. He's a guy making good strides, walking, not running.
:15:58. > :16:03.He deserves to do really well today. He has worked really hard and it is
:16:04. > :16:10.interesting that he's talked about being part of the team. He's one the
:16:11. > :16:13.admiration of the rest of the British endurance teams because he's
:16:14. > :16:17.very much part of that group. He trained extremely and is bringing
:16:18. > :16:30.through a group of youngsters behind him. He's making a step up to the
:16:31. > :16:36.20-kilometre walk. Both boys really appreciate that they are getting a
:16:37. > :16:40.chance to walk on a course that will be lined with the support they will
:16:41. > :16:45.never have experienced before. Making the most of that. Just to be
:16:46. > :16:55.on top of the game is what they want. Absolutely. Paula is going to
:16:56. > :16:59.hop over to the commentary box which is not actually that easy to get to.
:17:00. > :17:11.Take your heels off and take your time. Racing alongside Tom Bosworth.
:17:12. > :17:14.Let's see how things are looking in London because Steve Cram is down
:17:15. > :17:26.there and we'll talk this through things. Thank you. Beautiful day in
:17:27. > :17:37.London. We hope there will be plenty of spectators. An event which
:17:38. > :17:44.captured everybody in Rio de Janiero, drawing focus to race
:17:45. > :17:53.walking in a way that it has not had for some time. They could not have
:17:54. > :17:58.had a better venue for today. Right in front of Buckingham Palace, and
:17:59. > :18:05.the Mall. The famous venue for the finish of the London Marathon. Given
:18:06. > :18:08.special permission to use it for the events. We've had 50-kilometre walks
:18:09. > :18:26.already. Bethan was just outside her personal
:18:27. > :18:37.best. That disqualification from the Chinese athlete, right at the
:18:38. > :18:54.closing stages. For people who are not familiar with the rules. Tom
:18:55. > :19:03.Bosworth is right on the left. I'm sure Tom will be delighted. He will
:19:04. > :19:13.be racing in front of a home crowd. Plenty of opposition. The Chinese
:19:14. > :19:20.interestingly have not picked the men who finished in the gold and
:19:21. > :19:36.silver positions in Rio de Janiero. The speed may well set him in good
:19:37. > :19:41.stead. This man has been picked in the Chinese trials. He got a
:19:42. > :19:52.phenomenal trial. This man is defending from Spain. Lopez. It is a
:19:53. > :20:08.little bit more relevant. I will talk more at this gets going. The
:20:09. > :20:16.final race, the men's 20 kilometres. Tom Bosworth and Calum Wilkinson for
:20:17. > :20:20.Great Britain. The Mall is packed, beautiful day, the conditions are
:20:21. > :20:28.very good indeed. The temperature is about 21 degrees. Each lap is two
:20:29. > :20:43.kilometres. They head down towards Admiralty Arch. Spin around. Head
:20:44. > :20:57.back up the Mall. They walk around the Phantom at the top end. We will
:20:58. > :21:08.be getting splits every kilometre. We are looking at about four
:21:09. > :21:28.minutes. Did not get a personal best. They are well under way. What
:21:29. > :21:33.shall we talk about? The rules? They will be stuck together quite a long
:21:34. > :21:41.time in early stages. If you are new to race walking, the judges are
:21:42. > :21:48.looking for two things. You might have seen a lot of pictures and
:21:49. > :21:51.super slow motion. The judges judge with their naked eye. They are
:21:52. > :21:59.looking for contacts with the ground, and inevitably they do lose
:22:00. > :22:04.contact with the ground, occasionally. It is in the eye of
:22:05. > :22:11.the beholder. They can issue a warning if they see that you are
:22:12. > :22:17.losing contact. They have a yellow paddle. If you continue to do so you
:22:18. > :22:22.could receive a red. Three red paddles and you will be out. The
:22:23. > :22:31.other thing is straight leg. You've got to lockets and then bend it.
:22:32. > :22:40.Straight leg in front of you until your body moves over your leg. Then
:22:41. > :22:43.you can bend your leg. So they are looking for two things. They have
:22:44. > :22:52.two symbols on the paddles to tell you what they are warning you about.
:22:53. > :22:56.Three red and you're out. No judge can offer you more than one red. You
:22:57. > :23:01.have to have three separate judges from different countries. So they
:23:02. > :23:06.cannot have one judge picking on one person three times. Three separate
:23:07. > :23:19.judges decide. The chief judge get the ultimate say and he can overrule
:23:20. > :23:24.everybody if he wants to. It is something everybody have to get
:23:25. > :23:27.their heads around as part of the discipline. You take part in the
:23:28. > :23:33.marathon and you know that you will go through some rough patches. The
:23:34. > :23:38.race walkers need to accept the physical endurance of it. They need
:23:39. > :23:43.to accept the technical side of it and that they cannot make those
:23:44. > :23:47.mistakes. I think Tom Bosworth has talked a lot about how much he
:23:48. > :23:53.worked on that technique, to ensure that however tired he is, if he
:23:54. > :23:57.doesn't get lazy, loses technique, and not be able to hold that
:23:58. > :24:06.straight leg. That is something that he drilled a lot so that people ask
:24:07. > :24:10.whether he does any running. Tom does not do much about because he
:24:11. > :24:17.does not want to get into his head that kind of bending the knee that
:24:18. > :24:22.we do is brothers. He wants to make sure that he's technically strong on
:24:23. > :24:28.there. You can tell that his technique is not right. He knows
:24:29. > :24:38.that the judge will be there. They do need to accept it as part of the
:24:39. > :24:43.game. I remember talking to the winner of the 50-kilometre walk and
:24:44. > :24:49.he said you just got to accept that it happens and you cannot take it
:24:50. > :24:52.personally, you cannot hold it against any of the judges, they are
:24:53. > :25:03.doing their job and you just have a bad day and you made a mistake. Just
:25:04. > :25:05.having a look behind. The Australian, the Olympic
:25:06. > :25:11.bronze-medallist moving up on the right-hand side. Very early stages.
:25:12. > :25:15.The Chinese athletes coming through. Just setting the early pace. You
:25:16. > :25:23.were with me when we were chatting earlier in the week. Tom said, I
:25:24. > :25:27.will go with him. If it is fast it is vast. He hopes it is not too
:25:28. > :25:31.fast. A little bit of bad weather would have maybe help because his
:25:32. > :25:43.technique stand-up in the difficult conditions. Perfect conditions and
:25:44. > :25:50.perfect road services. We have a world best in the women's 50
:25:51. > :25:55.kilometres. It could be that we are heading for a quick time. This is
:25:56. > :26:01.the first time that they take the wide route. Around the monument and
:26:02. > :26:09.around the Fountain. Big crowds which is great to see. It's a very
:26:10. > :26:13.British thing, race walking. People asking where it starts, is it a new
:26:14. > :26:22.thing? It is one of the oldest disciplines in track and field. Part
:26:23. > :26:25.of the championships in 1880. It develops out of the British pastime
:26:26. > :26:31.of pedestrians. I love this concept. A lot of bets were going on in a lot
:26:32. > :26:36.of endurance events. Horse racing, running, walking as well. One of the
:26:37. > :26:43.theories which I really liked the idea that footmen walked alongside
:26:44. > :26:48.the carriages of their masters, they were never allowed to run. They
:26:49. > :26:56.always had to walk. Eventually their masters started betting as to which
:26:57. > :27:00.was better than the other. The desk trainers, as it was called, became a
:27:01. > :27:08.really good way for guys to bet against each other and that is how
:27:09. > :27:18.it started. The rules were introduced and we ended up with the
:27:19. > :27:30.rules which were adopted in 1908 and we had the Olympic event. , Has
:27:31. > :27:36.received a yellow card? I'm not sure if it was for him or Takahashi. It
:27:37. > :27:43.may have been to the group as a whole. It may be was them saying,
:27:44. > :27:50.don't get too carried away here. Can we get information on that? Not on
:27:51. > :28:00.the caution but the red ones will come up. They've started fairly
:28:01. > :28:04.quickly. The first kilometre was three minutes 58. Tom has not broken
:28:05. > :28:12.80 minutes. He's just checking his watch. They are right on one hour.
:28:13. > :28:22.I'm a little surprised to see, there. That to see Tom there. Maybe
:28:23. > :28:33.they hung around as long as they could. He's not very quick in the
:28:34. > :28:41.latter stages. Certainly, the race plan he was alluding to earlier on
:28:42. > :28:52.was one of patients. Maybe a bit of excitement in the early stages. He
:28:53. > :29:02.was at the front. He's still got people sitting behind him and going
:29:03. > :29:11.with his pace. I think Tom was expecting the Chinese team, they are
:29:12. > :29:14.all very young, they have made a big step in senior championships and he
:29:15. > :29:24.was expecting them to push the pace early on and make a very fast pace.
:29:25. > :29:31.Maybe he's trying to motivate the team. Another warning shown. You've
:29:32. > :29:36.got to accept that will happen. People will be disqualified. Some of
:29:37. > :29:45.the main contenders will get disqualified. The German is having a
:29:46. > :29:51.great season. He's much further back and starting off the way that Tom
:29:52. > :29:54.said he was going to. Lopez, the defending champion in the red and
:29:55. > :30:00.the yellow, is going close as well. He's just behind him. The told
:30:01. > :30:08.German. Have Germany won a gold medal? I will let you think about
:30:09. > :30:20.it. They've at second. Second and third in the decathlon. In the
:30:21. > :30:29.javelin. Thank you. They did win the gold medal. This is going against
:30:30. > :30:32.what Tom said and that's not a criticism. He is either feeling good
:30:33. > :30:41.there, he's certainly rising to the occasion. He knows that he's come to
:30:42. > :30:46.the championships with a prospect of, he knows to be in contention
:30:47. > :30:55.he's got to be quicker than ever before. Certainly set out at quicker
:30:56. > :30:59.pace. He did this in the Rio de Janiero. He went had to the front
:31:00. > :31:08.and he built up a fear lead. He may be trying to replicate that. He may
:31:09. > :31:15.be inspired by this morning, seeing him go out early and ill on it.
:31:16. > :31:20.Picked out Tom Bosworth a couple of years ago and said, this guy coming
:31:21. > :31:27.through could be really good. He could really make that breakthrough
:31:28. > :31:33.to the world stage. Just taking his drink.
:31:34. > :31:41.They stole in leads and we were talking in the interview about being
:31:42. > :31:53.part of the endurance programme with the other athletes, with Mo, in
:31:54. > :32:02.Beijing, Tom is a popular part of the endurance team as well. Young
:32:03. > :32:09.Callum starting to become part of that as well. The Brownlee brothers,
:32:10. > :32:14.there as well, Beth Potter, it's a great community. I see them on the
:32:15. > :32:19.track training quite a lot. There's a whole bunch of people wanting to
:32:20. > :32:23.do race walkers and Tom is a talisman for it. In a short space of
:32:24. > :32:27.time he has become well-known quickly, and why not, he's done
:32:28. > :32:38.incredibly well and that mile performance at the anniversary games
:32:39. > :32:45.has certainly helped as well. Callum, there he is, good timing.
:32:46. > :32:46.Winning the world Junior Championships, an incredible
:32:47. > :32:59.performance. Tom maintaining good pace here, but Callum from
:33:00. > :33:10.Newmarket. The trial was held in New Haven Park in leads and Callum
:33:11. > :33:25.finished second to Tom. Tom was alluding in that interview that
:33:26. > :33:31.Mobot was walking much faster than him at a comparable age. So Tom
:33:32. > :33:52.Bosworth reading this, the Olympic bronze-medallist, the Australian,
:33:53. > :33:59.Smith in the group, Takahashi, wine Wang, Lopez of Spain. The
:34:00. > :34:04.silver-medallist from London hasn't been going so quick these days, but
:34:05. > :34:08.he is off the back of this group. They haven't quite settle down but
:34:09. > :34:14.Tom is setting a good pace here. It's amazing how when you get into
:34:15. > :34:18.the race, whatever plans were there beforehand, you can very quickly
:34:19. > :34:22.readjust and think I feel good, let's have a go here and that's
:34:23. > :34:26.obviously what seems to be happening. Yes, I think if they had
:34:27. > :34:31.been walking really quick, walking well below 80 minute pace, I think
:34:32. > :34:35.Tom would have settled into that park but he knows he's in shape to
:34:36. > :34:40.improve his personal best, he's been improving those times all year so he
:34:41. > :34:44.thinks why am I going to walk slower than that pace, I might as well walk
:34:45. > :35:03.clear at the front, get a clear view of the road
:35:04. > :35:08.ahead of me and keep this moving at a pace that will suit me. He can
:35:09. > :35:11.close fast but if he leaves it to slow, you are leaving it open to be
:35:12. > :35:14.able to put big surges in there which are risky to cover because you
:35:15. > :35:16.might risk losing your technique in those surges. When you think about
:35:17. > :35:19.it, he walked not much outside one hour 20 in Rio, and although it is a
:35:20. > :35:23.nice day today it is nowhere near the conditions they had to face in
:35:24. > :35:28.Rio. It was a little bit of a race of attrition to some extent. The
:35:29. > :35:34.disqualifications become a factor when they are fatigued. To make it a
:35:35. > :35:40.good, honest pace is not a bad option. Another few warnings being
:35:41. > :35:47.given there but we are yet to have the first red card. Callum Wilkinson
:35:48. > :35:53.just going through your picture. Fairly even pace at the front here,
:35:54. > :36:06.a very even pace being set by Britain's best here.
:36:07. > :36:14.15.56. It's almost been metronomic, I guess that is one of the features
:36:15. > :36:19.of racewalking. But it is the ability to change pace, particularly
:36:20. > :36:23.when fatigue sets in. It's a bit like the marathon, if you can just
:36:24. > :36:28.kind of stay steady and then start to race the latter stages, that's an
:36:29. > :36:32.incredible ability to have. Some are just hanging on, and Mobot comes
:36:33. > :36:53.through taking water there. There is Barrondo, the
:36:54. > :36:55.silver-medallist from London. Racewalking is popular in several
:36:56. > :37:17.countries around the world. Lincoln did a personal best in the
:37:18. > :37:26.race before then. That is Tom, straight leg. You can see the S. So
:37:27. > :37:42.he's got to watch that, that is a caution. Each of those paddles
:37:43. > :37:53.should have an S. It will have an inverted L for lifting. That looks
:37:54. > :37:59.like its load Tom up a little bit, that caution. You can tell they are
:38:00. > :38:09.suddenly gathering behind him. Maybe off the pace a tad. I think he was
:38:10. > :38:15.also just checking to see, is it Wang behind him, did he want to come
:38:16. > :38:20.through? Tom wants to keep his pace moving, I don't think he wants to be
:38:21. > :38:23.leading at this point. He might be more comfortable sitting back in the
:38:24. > :38:27.park but he doesn't particularly want the pace to drop. As I've said
:38:28. > :38:31.that he starting to surge a little bit and building up a bit of
:38:32. > :38:37.daylight now. It helps when the group goes into the bend, they
:38:38. > :38:42.obviously move a little bit more into single file and then gather
:38:43. > :38:48.again after that. Tom now happy to relinquish the lead. What a great
:38:49. > :38:59.view. Free tickets for the marathon is of course and for the walks.
:39:00. > :39:03.Mobot Wilkinson, the junior champion, on the track going
:39:04. > :39:08.through. These championships have been phenomenal. I used that word a
:39:09. > :39:16.bit too much last night, but it was. The crowds in the stadium, now on
:39:17. > :39:22.the roads. It has been like London all over again. In a different way
:39:23. > :39:26.because obviously people are coming specifically to watch athletics. I
:39:27. > :39:30.know we have been going on about medals and thankfully we got a few
:39:31. > :39:34.last night, but that aside I think it's been one of the best World
:39:35. > :39:38.Championships I have ever been to, either as an athlete or as a member
:39:39. > :39:43.of the media watching. The atmosphere has been incredible and
:39:44. > :39:50.it's been the drama that we have seen on the track, a little bit off
:39:51. > :39:55.the track as well. Surprise after surprise. Favourites not winning,
:39:56. > :39:59.and as we saw last night, the legends of the sport coming to the
:40:00. > :40:04.end of their careers. There has been so much to talk about, so much to
:40:05. > :40:08.draw people into athletics. I just hope we can keep those people
:40:09. > :40:14.interested for the next few years as we head towards Tokyo, and the
:40:15. > :40:18.Commonwealth Games next year of course, the European Championships,
:40:19. > :40:23.another World Championships, then off to Tokyo. Yes, all of that to
:40:24. > :40:34.look forward to and I think it just goes to illustrate the beauty and
:40:35. > :40:37.magic of athletics. It is that drama, the fact it is not scripted
:40:38. > :40:39.and it's all about the stories and emotions coming out. People can
:40:40. > :40:42.identify with the journey Sally Pearson has been on over the last
:40:43. > :40:45.four or five years, and to come back and grab that victory last night,
:40:46. > :40:49.the whole stadium could appreciate that, even those watching athletics
:40:50. > :40:54.for the first signs can see that emotion. It is contagious and it
:40:55. > :40:58.builds up. It is the unpredictability against the fact
:40:59. > :41:04.some bits are unpredictable but you can never guarantee what happens on
:41:05. > :41:19.the racing circuit and you have to be in the right position to see that
:41:20. > :41:29.moment. -- seize the moment. Kevin Campion the leader, and looking down
:41:30. > :41:36.and being told Mobot Wilkinson has had a red card. The first junior to
:41:37. > :41:44.receive a red card, that's a dubious honour. If you are joining us, the
:41:45. > :41:48.way the rules work - the judges are looking for maintaining contact with
:41:49. > :41:54.the ground according to the naked eye. They have no screens to look
:41:55. > :41:58.at, no super slow motion, and they cannot use any other aids. So they
:41:59. > :42:06.are looking for that and straight leg. Mobot has been warned about
:42:07. > :42:14.lifting. I say warned, the red card means instead of a caution that's a
:42:15. > :42:21.warning. You are allowed two and the third one is a disqualification. And
:42:22. > :42:28.each warning has to come from a separate judge. Tom Bosworth in the
:42:29. > :42:33.lead group and they are starting to then out a little bit. I was talking
:42:34. > :42:37.to Mel earlier and she said if I can stay with them and they drop off one
:42:38. > :42:44.by one, who knows what size the group is going into the last lap.
:42:45. > :42:48.Campion of France, the leader, another like Tom, hasn't broken one
:42:49. > :43:03.hour 27 this pace right on the edge for him as well. Then
:43:04. > :43:20.Wang the Chinese trials were held back in March. The time is set of
:43:21. > :43:25.1:17:54. The normal time. I guess we should, Paula, apart from the red
:43:26. > :43:30.cards which are part of the event and competition, racewalking has
:43:31. > :43:35.been perhaps more than anything else decimated by positive drug tests.
:43:36. > :43:41.Most of them with Russia. We had the one coach who has more than 20
:43:42. > :43:46.athletes eventually got caught between 2005 and 2015. He has now
:43:47. > :43:49.been banned for life. The Olympic champion from London. The Russian
:43:50. > :43:53.team are not here but they had a whole bunch of their racewalking
:43:54. > :44:02.programme completely wiped out. Then you think of the Italian as well so
:44:03. > :44:05.that has helped the case for the likes of Tom, knowing the drug
:44:06. > :44:10.testing regime is working much better now than it was a few years
:44:11. > :44:14.back, and that helping in terms of bringing the time to be closer to
:44:15. > :44:19.what the likes of Tom would be capable of. In fact the only Russian
:44:20. > :44:24.who is here is the youngster. I have been trying to look for him, see
:44:25. > :44:32.what best he's wearing. The 18-year-old neutralised athlete. He
:44:33. > :44:39.is there, in the blue fading into pink.
:44:40. > :44:57.In the women's event, she was wearing an orange version of that.
:44:58. > :45:08.Shirobokov produced a great time, but it was in Russia, so we will
:45:09. > :45:14.take it with a pinch of salt. We have had newly confirmed champions
:45:15. > :45:19.in this event from 2009, 2000 and 11, in the context of the biological
:45:20. > :45:24.passport. One group have been hit and he should be banned for coming
:45:25. > :45:29.anywhere near athletics for the rest of his life. There are still rumours
:45:30. > :45:36.that he's involved with coaching athletes and that is when you've got
:45:37. > :45:42.to look at the sanctioning of the entourage, we would love to have
:45:43. > :45:48.live bands -- life bans but also for the entourage because they are
:45:49. > :45:54.introducing and forcing athletes down a path and I'm sure they are
:45:55. > :45:59.being told that everybody is doing it. That is one of the biggest point
:46:00. > :46:06.they are trying to get across. All events tried to reinforce that it is
:46:07. > :46:11.not OK, all athletes don't do it. If you do, you're doing yourself a
:46:12. > :46:21.disservice, so it is something we will come down harder on but it has
:46:22. > :46:22.been badly hit by that and they want to see the balance restored to the
:46:23. > :46:35.competition. That group being whittled down a
:46:36. > :46:42.little bit. Briefly, the red cards. He is carrying one at the moment.
:46:43. > :46:46.Has been given a warning. I think another caution. This is just a
:46:47. > :47:09.casual observer. I'm being facetious but you would
:47:10. > :47:14.assume there is merit in not drawing the eye of the judges. You must
:47:15. > :47:20.think there is a skill to being a judge and keeping an ion. There are
:47:21. > :47:26.so many legs moving. How do you check that all of them are going
:47:27. > :47:33.straight. It must be harder when they are a big group. It will get
:47:34. > :47:34.easier. It must be easier to be spotted if there are infringements
:47:35. > :47:56.when you're out on your own. There was a drink thrown to him. He
:47:57. > :48:06.caught it. It was good dexterity. Are they allowed to do that? I saw
:48:07. > :48:11.this on go up on the earth. In the marathon you need to get the drinks
:48:12. > :48:16.table. You can pick up the pace and run for a little bit. You need to
:48:17. > :48:23.get to bit of space. If you're walking it is harder to do that.
:48:24. > :48:29.You've got to pick it up yourself be passed that within the zone. They
:48:30. > :48:42.can still parted to. I don't have a problem with that. All I saw was his
:48:43. > :48:47.arm in the earth. Why would you do that unless you try to catch
:48:48. > :48:52.something? If we get the chance to have a look at it we will. He's in
:48:53. > :49:01.the middle of the group and I'm happy to see him in there. He's
:49:02. > :49:10.never front near a big group and he's had a couple of cautions.
:49:11. > :49:17.Callum Wilson has had a couple. He's dropped position.
:49:18. > :49:28.They are both first-rate leg. -- Callum Wilkinson. And just doing of
:49:29. > :49:34.the computer. That the best information I can give you. It has
:49:35. > :49:42.changed a couple of times. It's all I can do, really. At this point, two
:49:43. > :49:52.red cards. One more and he will be disqualified. The speed has been
:49:53. > :50:00.pretty good all the way through. Is Tom OK? He's had a niggle this week.
:50:01. > :50:10.He does not look as comfortable as he wars a few minutes ago. He had a
:50:11. > :50:14.minor niggle with his need coming into it but speaking to him just
:50:15. > :50:17.before he was very excited and he was looking forward to the chance to
:50:18. > :50:23.be out there soaking up the atmosphere. He knows that he's in
:50:24. > :50:29.great shape. He's trained well. He's been beating his personal bests. The
:50:30. > :50:35.Diamond League where he came into the London stadium and broke the
:50:36. > :50:46.world record really boosted his confidence and racewalking. Alex
:50:47. > :50:54.Wright also getting a warning. I just correcting myself about Callum.
:50:55. > :51:01.It is for the straight leg. There he is. Confirmation of the red cards.
:51:02. > :51:06.Straight leg infringement. He was disqualified in that event. It was
:51:07. > :51:23.the anniversary games. They were racing so fast. Another yellow put
:51:24. > :51:29.out. Tom is now tucked in the group. The pace is now the. You can see a
:51:30. > :51:38.little bit of strain appearing on the faces in the group. Alex Wright
:51:39. > :51:43.is falling away. Starting to get a few more red cards appearing for
:51:44. > :51:50.athletes. Not so much in the lead group as such and certainly none of
:51:51. > :52:13.the main contenders. They are still on the pace that
:52:14. > :52:25.would bring them under 420. There is the youngster. He is just ahead of
:52:26. > :52:35.Tom Bosworth. The Russian is allowed to compete as a natural athlete. He
:52:36. > :52:39.is satisfied the criteria set in terms of drug testing before these
:52:40. > :52:50.championships to allow him to compete as a neutral athlete.
:52:51. > :53:02.A gap appearing. Trying to cover that move. Tom needs to be patient.
:53:03. > :53:15.I know there's been a lot of talk about his ability to win a medal.
:53:16. > :53:22.There's a long way to go and Wang, with the confidence that he has,
:53:23. > :53:30.just looked as though there was an attempt to break away there. Tom
:53:31. > :53:37.Bosworth bringing the group back. They are whittling it down. The tall
:53:38. > :53:46.German is right here in the middle. He's got a leaning back action. He
:53:47. > :53:48.tall and right in the middle of the group. Tom Bosworth is sitting third
:53:49. > :54:15.or fourth place. The British athletes, the idea was
:54:16. > :54:22.to get away and out of London. Obviously that went very well. Tom
:54:23. > :54:29.went to Paris for a few days. He arrived on Tuesday. Every athlete
:54:30. > :54:33.has a different regime. Mo Farah likes to come in pretty late. Others
:54:34. > :54:42.like to come in ten days before they compete. There are various trains of
:54:43. > :54:49.thought on that. Some are learning that process as to when is best to
:54:50. > :55:05.race. Mo Farah has an issue because he's got a week of racing. He came
:55:06. > :55:18.in on Tuesday. Tom prefers the ten days. You need to experiment. It is
:55:19. > :55:34.very much in relation to how much work doing. They walk a bit quicker
:55:35. > :55:36.and recover better. It works to -- helps to work on speed because it is
:55:37. > :55:54.hard in an endurance event. Sometimes you need to come down to
:55:55. > :56:03.sea level and give your legs a chance to recover. Another look at
:56:04. > :56:06.the watch. Tom is coming through the kilometre. They've been really on
:56:07. > :56:18.for the whole time. The other aspect, we've spoken about the
:56:19. > :56:22.physiological side of things. We talk about what this does to your
:56:23. > :56:35.body and the different technique of running. If you think about how fast
:56:36. > :56:45.an 800-metre runner is turning over, when they are at full pelt, when
:56:46. > :56:53.they will be a bit slower, the wear and tear... The cadences quicker
:56:54. > :57:02.because it's a shorter turnover. I bet you it's a quicker turnover. I
:57:03. > :57:09.like the word you used. Shuffle. It was not so much of an insult. The
:57:10. > :57:19.one I think that it more than anyone is cost della -- Costella. I was not
:57:20. > :57:33.sure he was leaving the ground at times. One of the greatest of all
:57:34. > :57:43.times. Finished ahead on that occasion. So far, Tom Bosworth
:57:44. > :57:52.acquitting himself very well. The crowd supporting in a way that only
:57:53. > :58:01.he could have dreamt. I forgot, he did walk in London, they had a test
:58:02. > :58:05.event. He took part in that. I said, have you ever... And he said, he had
:58:06. > :58:17.walked in London at a test event. Experienced this is a little bit.
:58:18. > :58:28.Another kilometre there. Approaching ten kilometres, approaching halfway.
:58:29. > :58:41.The bad news, the first red has gone to Tom Bosworth and it may be
:58:42. > :58:46.because of picking up the pace. It is for maintaining a street leg. Tom
:58:47. > :59:12.is the first to receive that. If there will be other red cards.
:59:13. > :59:15.Maybe this is a risky strategy. That change in pace has resulted in them
:59:16. > :59:42.receiving a red card. It is a little bit worrying for him.
:59:43. > :59:47.I don't think this is what he would have wanted. He would very much be
:59:48. > :59:53.wanting a clean sheet for as much of the race as he can. He's checked a
:59:54. > :59:56.little bit. He's allowed them to move ahead. He is checking his own
:59:57. > :00:01.watch as they go through the point. He needs to get back in control of
:00:02. > :00:06.it at this point. He doesn't want to lose that control brings technique
:00:07. > :00:08.and settle back into that group. He needs to let himself calm down.
:00:09. > :00:22.Client should note. If you are on the Mall, thank you
:00:23. > :00:25.for the support you are giving to the athletes. They do appreciate it
:00:26. > :00:31.but it can give the boost of adrenaline that can get you carried
:00:32. > :00:36.away. The red card was for lost contact, not the bend leg, and
:00:37. > :00:41.suddenly he's now on his second one so that means another judge has red
:00:42. > :00:47.carded him. It has to be a different judge each time so Tom is literally
:00:48. > :00:57.walking a tightrope here. He is one red card disqualification and it is
:00:58. > :01:02.very early here. Tom moving to the side and said I should not be in the
:01:03. > :01:18.position leading this. Where are the names who were the prerace
:01:19. > :01:22.favourites, including Lang. Takahashi is on the far side, there
:01:23. > :01:29.are three Japanese athletes in that group, and Lopez at the back, the
:01:30. > :01:34.defending champion. Tom has got to be really careful here. It is a
:01:35. > :01:41.little early. Both British athletes have received two red cards for not
:01:42. > :01:52.maintaining contact. Although that lead group is smaller than it was,
:01:53. > :01:57.and they have slowed again a little bit... As I'm seeing a few more red
:01:58. > :02:04.cards appearing on the computer, but only one in that lead group is Tom.
:02:05. > :02:06.He certainly the only one who's received two, in fact the only one
:02:07. > :02:24.in the lead group who has had any. He's at the back of the group now
:02:25. > :02:28.and it may well be that, because I haven't spoken to much to Tom about
:02:29. > :02:34.how that affects you psychologically as well, as we get a good view of
:02:35. > :02:38.Buckingham Palace, and there we can see the current standings of how
:02:39. > :02:54.that lead group is made up. The youngster, Takahashi I mentioned,
:02:55. > :02:56.Lopez the defending champion, then these others as we go down,
:02:57. > :03:18.detached. So the man in front now is the
:03:19. > :03:24.German, Linke, whose been having a very good season. Paula is reminding
:03:25. > :03:33.me it is left-hand day-to-day. And he is left-handed. On world
:03:34. > :03:39.left-handed Day, Linke is leading the race, and very much one of the
:03:40. > :03:46.favourites coming into the race too. As you and I both know, left-handed
:03:47. > :03:58.people are more intelligent, good looking, etc etc. I'm joking,
:03:59. > :04:03.right-handed people. Half. We've had our first disqualification and it is
:04:04. > :04:08.not Tom Bosworth, it is Alex Wright. He started receiving cards early.
:04:09. > :04:14.But that's my point, it is very early for Tom to received two red.
:04:15. > :04:19.Mobot Wilkinson did early for not maintaining contact and Alex Wright
:04:20. > :04:24.has received three for the same offence. Every kilometre that goes
:04:25. > :04:28.by Tom is still there is a kilometre closer to him being able to contend.
:04:29. > :04:33.It just worries me that when the pace picks up, that is when
:04:34. > :04:38.technique really comes into play. Tom gritting his teeth here and
:04:39. > :04:46.pushing on. He will obviously explain this to us afterwards, but
:04:47. > :04:51.this is a bold move by Tom Bosworth, carrying two red cards. Attracting
:04:52. > :04:55.the eye of the judges. He has transgressed according to two of
:04:56. > :04:59.them. One more and he will be disqualified. He is putting that to
:05:00. > :05:04.the back of his mind and trying to push on here. The pace has been
:05:05. > :05:09.steady, it has been Tom's personal-best pace but he's decided
:05:10. > :05:14.that I'm still going to push on. I think I can break up this group. He
:05:15. > :05:18.said he would wait until the last five K but he's done it earlier than
:05:19. > :05:24.that so he must be feeling good, but he must keep his technique together
:05:25. > :05:32.here. And the bad news is, I have just been told three. Only Tom will
:05:33. > :05:36.be able to explain this afterwards because he's now going to be
:05:37. > :05:41.disqualified. Tom Bosworth is in the front but he has received three red
:05:42. > :05:45.cards from three different judges for not maintaining contact. He
:05:46. > :05:49.hasn't been notified himself yet, but whether or not that was the
:05:50. > :05:53.right thing to do, to push the pace when it pushes your technique to the
:05:54. > :05:59.edge, only he will be able to explain. But it seems an all or
:06:00. > :06:03.nothing strategy from Tom Bosworth. On this occasion it has fallen apart
:06:04. > :06:07.in spectacular fashion in the worst possible place in the World
:06:08. > :06:12.Championship in front of a home crowd. This, not what he wanted, and
:06:13. > :06:17.all of his supporters would have wanted and indeed what British
:06:18. > :06:22.racewalking would have wanted. Mobot Wilkinson is carrying two, and the
:06:23. > :06:29.chief judge will notify Bosworth and make sure he is aware, and will have
:06:30. > :06:40.to stop. I will be interested to see what the reaction is. We are working
:06:41. > :06:53.off the computer. And it tells us, Alex Wright was the first to receive
:06:54. > :06:57.three, Tom Bosworth has now. He has just been told and now he has found
:06:58. > :07:04.out. He must have been feeling good but it's also about keeping the
:07:05. > :07:11.technique together. Tom Bosworth is crashed. It is a sad sight to see,
:07:12. > :07:20.but it is part of racewalking. You raise the competitors but you are
:07:21. > :07:24.also at the behest of the judges, required to hold your technique
:07:25. > :07:29.together. On this occasion Tom Bosworth has not managed to do that
:07:30. > :07:38.and under the strictest examination he has been found wanting. Well,
:07:39. > :07:42.that is a terrible thing to happen for Annie Walker in any event but it
:07:43. > :07:49.happens fairly regularly and I can assure you it will happen to others
:07:50. > :07:57.out here. The crowd, they are notified down there. Tom is still by
:07:58. > :08:06.the side of the road. As the 18-year-old Russian is leading with
:08:07. > :08:13.Linke behind him. It was an all or nothing strategy. He must have known
:08:14. > :08:19.he was on two. Only he will be able to explain why he did that. I can
:08:20. > :08:30.only assume he was feeling great but there are two and -- two elements to
:08:31. > :08:39.this. Yes, judging by his reaction it didn't look like he knew he was
:08:40. > :08:42.on two. He was asking the judge, "What, me?" But when he made the
:08:43. > :08:47.break he was gritting his teeth in a way I haven't seen him do before so
:08:48. > :08:51.it was a calculated break where he was trying to increase the pace but
:08:52. > :08:55.he looked very surprised when he was told that. I'm sure they are showing
:08:56. > :08:59.the red card, it must have seen that. There's enough support staff
:09:00. > :09:04.out on the course that they would be able to warn him, to say sit back a
:09:05. > :09:08.little bit and not take risks, certainly until the closing part of
:09:09. > :09:16.the race at least, and don't try and push off the front at this point
:09:17. > :09:21.when you are already on two cards. Tom Bosworth has waited for this
:09:22. > :09:26.moment for so long, he has trained so hard for it, and to end in this
:09:27. > :09:34.way, that must be the worst possible feelings. The defending champion
:09:35. > :09:39.Lopez is playing a canny waiting game. He has done this before. Lopez
:09:40. > :09:45.just off the back of the group but who wouldn't want to lose too much
:09:46. > :09:53.contact here. Linke leaving it. Another yellow puddle being
:09:54. > :09:59.delivered. And this lead group, with the exception of Bosworth, are
:10:00. > :10:06.clean. There he is. That is a sad sight. I think that's one of the
:10:07. > :10:15.judges, who may well know, the racewalking fraternity. But the
:10:16. > :10:20.disconsolate Tom Bosworth, his dreams shattered. But as we said, it
:10:21. > :10:26.is part of the event and it is going to happen to Tom and great
:10:27. > :10:28.champions, and others who are challenging to become great
:10:29. > :10:34.champions, but you have to stay within the rules. I just wonder, as
:10:35. > :10:38.you said, I think it's a good point, Paula, I think there's meant to be
:10:39. > :10:43.aboard up somewhere on the route that signifies it but it is very
:10:44. > :10:48.visible when you get a red card or it is meant to be. You are meant to
:10:49. > :10:54.be notified, and he should have been aware. He will tell us afterwards if
:10:55. > :11:00.he knew. But the fact he went to the front and made a bold bid, there is
:11:01. > :11:04.Lopez and the gap is growing with the two Japanese athletes on the
:11:05. > :11:09.back as the pace is picking up now, but if he didn't know, he will want
:11:10. > :11:14.to know why he didn't know. But I'm pretty sure he should have done.
:11:15. > :11:20.It's an interesting question but I don't know what the grounds are for
:11:21. > :11:23.appeal, I presume there aren't any within the racewalking rules. Once
:11:24. > :11:28.they are shown on the third card, they do have to step aside. They are
:11:29. > :11:35.good at that, you never see any of them arguing. They are distraught
:11:36. > :11:39.but rarely do they argue back. I was watching the women's race earlier,
:11:40. > :11:43.the judges have that compassion for them. They have given them the red
:11:44. > :11:47.card, they have to, it is in the rules, but they feel for the
:11:48. > :11:51.athletes and they are part of the strong community and they do have
:11:52. > :11:57.that support amongst each other. It is just accepted I think that that
:11:58. > :12:02.is the rules and you will be carded and you will step off. That's like
:12:03. > :12:07.it has to come from three separate people to make sure it isn't just
:12:08. > :12:14.one person seeing something and then continuing to see that throughout
:12:15. > :12:20.the race. I mention the fact there is meant to be aboard out there that
:12:21. > :12:27.signifies. There is a big screen I can see which is essentially at 90
:12:28. > :12:32.degrees to the runners, they cannot see it directly unless they turn and
:12:33. > :12:38.look at it. I don't know if there is another one out there that they can
:12:39. > :12:42.seek without turning to look at it. Anyway, I'm sure Tom will clarify
:12:43. > :12:52.that for us. Afterwards at some point. He was up there, the first to
:12:53. > :12:58.put the pace on, and Linke has carried that on. Now they are
:12:59. > :13:03.breaking up, the German who won the European cup, then this 18-year-old
:13:04. > :13:13.Shirobokov of Russia, competing as a neutral athlete in the bloke. Then
:13:14. > :13:18.Wang, the best of the Chinese. Martin carrying the flag for Spain.
:13:19. > :13:25.The Olympic bronze-medallist is there. He looks like he's limping a
:13:26. > :13:30.little bit, it may be his technique but there is a grimace on his face.
:13:31. > :13:35.He's certainly working hard but is there a bit of pain as well? He's
:13:36. > :13:42.working hard to stay with this group, definitely, Paula. If that is
:13:43. > :13:51.the pain of staying with the group etched on the face? Shirobokov,
:13:52. > :14:27.Wang, and this group starts to split up.
:14:28. > :14:31.Martin in there for Spain. Only 23 himself and Lopez looks as if his
:14:32. > :14:37.challenge, unless something happens to those in front here, is starting
:14:38. > :14:42.to be a forlorn one. Way back now, a good 50m behind the lead group, the
:14:43. > :14:53.defending champion. And no one in this lead group has received any
:14:54. > :15:05.warnings whatsoever. The other Brazilian finished in both walks,
:15:06. > :15:07.Bonfim, ninth in the 50 K, for not far ahead of Tom Bosworth, and he is
:15:08. > :15:34.still involved. Just having a look up at the screen.
:15:35. > :15:44.That is the screen I was talking about. There was a screen with the
:15:45. > :15:59.names on and Fujisawa was looking at it. Wang, Fujisawa, Finke, in
:16:00. > :16:30.contention here. German flags being waived. Spain
:16:31. > :16:38.have yet to win one. Never a great performance from them. In an event
:16:39. > :16:47.they would not be thinking they would have a gold medal contention.
:16:48. > :16:52.Eve-10-mac is having a great season performing for them. They are
:16:53. > :17:00.getting close to the final five K. Still this group of eight. Nobody
:17:01. > :17:12.has made the big move. They've whittled it down.
:17:13. > :17:30.Wang is working hard. This is his main bid to stretch it out. He will
:17:31. > :17:40.be getting feedback from his team-mates out on the course. There
:17:41. > :17:46.isn't the big screen in the stadium but they do have that particularly
:17:47. > :17:51.when they go round the title of the two bands. They are able to see
:17:52. > :17:55.what's happening down the road and work out who is in that group and
:17:56. > :18:05.who has been dropped from that group.
:18:06. > :18:14.There is the defending champion struggling a little bit now. Cannot
:18:15. > :18:24.really see any challenge coming from behind. This is where the medals
:18:25. > :18:29.are. Not too many athletes in that. Only four finished. It was only
:18:30. > :19:00.added to the programme three weeks ago. Then we had the women's 20 K.
:19:01. > :19:09.Martin is the first of this group to receive a red. There will be more in
:19:10. > :19:14.this group as we get into the last five kilometres. They will
:19:15. > :19:36.transgress. It is stretching out as well. The
:19:37. > :19:46.transgression is for not maintaining contact. Five kilometres to go, the
:19:47. > :20:03.pace is still there, that was a quicker section. 90 minutes and 45
:20:04. > :20:07.seconds. Another warning to the bronze-medallist. He's had a couple
:20:08. > :20:26.of those but has yet to receive a red card.
:20:27. > :20:35.For all this group will have what did -- wanted this to unfurl like
:20:36. > :20:41.this, with the exception of Martin you want to go into the last few
:20:42. > :20:48.kilometres with a clean sheet. You could argue that Martin would be the
:20:49. > :20:56.one who would least be thinking about winning a medal. The Olympic
:20:57. > :21:01.bronze-medallist, Linke, the German, over on the far side. Wang, the
:21:02. > :21:19.quickest in the group. All of them will be thinking, how do
:21:20. > :21:30.I win this? Am I feeling good? Technique holding together? Bonfin
:21:31. > :21:44.of Brazil, can he get amongst the medals?
:21:45. > :21:50.I wonder if they are watching in Buckingham Palace. They've got a
:21:51. > :21:57.great view. I wonder if they are even there. If they are, then maybe
:21:58. > :22:05.they are looking out. They will be sad to see that Tom Bosworth is not
:22:06. > :22:13.flying the flag for us anymore. If you're trying to run and carry an
:22:14. > :22:22.injury it alters your form. I wonder if it played a role. That is the
:22:23. > :22:30.lead group. Eight men from eight different countries with a chance of
:22:31. > :22:44.winning a medal here. A little further down. Callum Hawkins and.
:22:45. > :22:48.Callum Hawkins was of course in the marathon. Calum Wilkinson picked up
:22:49. > :23:04.two red cards but is still in the 39th spot. He's going well. Not far
:23:05. > :23:22.off his personal best. He's still there. It looks
:23:23. > :23:32.like Shange is closing up. He is past Lopez. Talking about speeding
:23:33. > :23:37.up, Bonfin has now received the red. He's received his first red. I'm
:23:38. > :23:41.pretty sure we will see more as we go through with four kilometres to
:23:42. > :24:00.go. Just two laps left. Arevalo, the first time the
:24:01. > :24:11.Colombian has come to the front. Maybe to take a drink. Shange is
:24:12. > :24:17.flying through. He's only six seconds off the group. He is not
:24:18. > :24:26.received any warnings about technique. Shange pushed himself
:24:27. > :24:35.into this. The group is starting to break up. Arevalo is doing it with
:24:36. > :24:45.some success. It is Linke and then the 18-year-old Shirobokov. Where is
:24:46. > :24:59.the South African? How is he progressing? The medals in that gap.
:25:00. > :25:20.You can see them probably three or four seconds behind. Arevalo in the
:25:21. > :25:28.lead. China were hoping their selection, a new young team,
:25:29. > :25:39.starting to look under pressure. You would not choose to let these three
:25:40. > :25:47.draw. Fujisawa has received his first red. It is all happening.
:25:48. > :25:52.Reaches the back of that group. If you join a group like that, you
:25:53. > :25:56.catch them by surprise, sometimes the best thing to do is keep moving
:25:57. > :26:02.past them but then he will be attracting the eyes of the judges.
:26:03. > :26:08.He's settled gradually into that group at this working his way to the
:26:09. > :26:09.front of it. They are starting to lap athletes and that adds a little
:26:10. > :26:35.bit of confusion. It is a rock performance by Shange.
:26:36. > :26:40.He doesn't have a big victory over 20 kilometres. He's very quick on
:26:41. > :26:46.the track and is maybe putting that to good effect. He's walking well
:26:47. > :26:51.inside his personal best. They are few years. He's sailed past. He is
:26:52. > :26:57.maintaining contact. Very quick technique. You talk about that
:26:58. > :27:06.cadence. Look at how quickly he's come onto the back of back group.
:27:07. > :27:12.What's he going to do here? Your coach would say when you move up to
:27:13. > :27:18.a group like that, just keep going. They will be like, where has this
:27:19. > :27:22.guy come from? Not one of the pre-race favourites. It's a surprise
:27:23. > :27:31.to see him there. The South African has come from nowhere. He was miles
:27:32. > :27:35.behind, relatively speaking. And now, even though the speed is up,
:27:36. > :27:43.he's taken the lead. South Africa lead this. I'm not even sure if this
:27:44. > :27:54.is his last kilometre. It has improved by ten seconds. He's picked
:27:55. > :28:06.up. He's caught them by surprise. You can see the shock on his face.
:28:07. > :28:10.He moved forward to challenge it. Shirobokov, you could almost see the
:28:11. > :28:15.look on his face. He was like, where did you come from? Had already
:28:16. > :28:19.established and enabled him to come back in contact with the chasing
:28:20. > :28:23.group and then with the lead group. Now he's starting to establish
:28:24. > :28:29.daylight. Shirobokov is fighting hard to maintain contact. Sitting
:28:30. > :28:39.there and following in the slipstream. Celebrated his birthday
:28:40. > :28:48.at the beginning of the month and he could well be celebrating a medal.
:28:49. > :28:54.He is with that, 346 kilometre, loan this group apart. The Olympic
:28:55. > :29:07.bronze-medallist is back there. All of a sudden there are three men.
:29:08. > :29:18.Trying to get back. Keeping an eye on the red card. At the moment, the
:29:19. > :29:27.top three have none. Trying to make an effort to get back but not able
:29:28. > :29:43.to at the moment. Calum Wilkinson is still going from Britain.
:29:44. > :29:52.Shange was inspired after watching the 2008 Olympics and he wants to
:29:53. > :29:59.make his country profiles still doing that so far. I don't think
:30:00. > :30:06.they've ever one a medal before. I don't think they would have done. I
:30:07. > :30:16.will check. Shange competed in the big race in Australia. His last
:30:17. > :30:23.race, he finished outside the top 20. Here he is in the World
:30:24. > :30:38.Championships, right at the front. Has come storming through.
:30:39. > :30:55.One lap to go, and Linke has had his first, as he starts to tire, his
:30:56. > :31:03.technique starts to falter. Linke in the space of a minute has received a
:31:04. > :31:07.second red caution. The bell sounds on the 20km walk, three men have a
:31:08. > :31:26.five kilometre lead over Bonfim. Five men perhaps still in contention
:31:27. > :31:44.but none of these three in the front have received a red card. Bonfim has
:31:45. > :31:55.worn, Linke has two. Wang, one of the pre-race favourites struggling a
:31:56. > :32:08.bit. Then Martin. Kim has been lapsed. The German, fighting
:32:09. > :32:11.fatigue. And also one more red card away from a disqualification. He
:32:12. > :32:19.looks very tired indeed, had hanging. Look at this, Shange made
:32:20. > :32:23.pay for going too hard too soon, but he had to work hard to get back to
:32:24. > :32:36.the group. An incredible kilometre sprint. Arevalo of Colombia.
:32:37. > :32:42.Shirobokov, the Russian competing as a neutral athlete. These four
:32:43. > :32:47.surely, if nothing happens in terms of red cards, are going to contest
:32:48. > :32:55.the medals here. The three of them walking side-by-side. Endurance as
:32:56. > :33:01.ever, in any event of this nature, but the pressure placed on the
:33:02. > :33:06.joints, the hips, knees, that's what you train for. It isn't just the
:33:07. > :33:16.cardiovascular fitness, it is the strength you need to hold together
:33:17. > :33:27.to keep that technique together. Lungs burning, but so are the legs.
:33:28. > :33:33.This is a good pace here at the front, and Bonfim desperately trying
:33:34. > :33:39.to get back to them as they take the turn. They go all the way back to
:33:40. > :33:47.Buckingham Palace, they turn there and effectively the home straight.
:33:48. > :33:52.Keep watching on this computing, it is difficult to see what all of the
:33:53. > :33:58.judges are doing out there but they seem to be steering clear of these
:33:59. > :34:02.three at the moment. They are not even seeing any caution is coming
:34:03. > :34:14.out for them so technique very much holding together. Mark Butler giving
:34:15. > :34:19.me a note saying the kilometre is equivalent to six minute my link. He
:34:20. > :34:26.was walking in that 17th kilometre of that race. And now he may well be
:34:27. > :34:39.paying for it. Arevalo, the Colombian. Trying to break away
:34:40. > :34:45.here. Former world junior champion, he has been unbeaten this year over
:34:46. > :34:51.20 kilometres, and now attempting to win the biggest race of his career.
:34:52. > :35:01.The World Championships now looks as though it could be between the two,
:35:02. > :35:06.although Bonfim is hanging in there. Shange may have done too much, too
:35:07. > :35:11.soon. He's desperately taking in water, pouring it over his head. The
:35:12. > :35:21.judges looking so closely at these main contenders. Ali to see any late
:35:22. > :35:30.drama in terms of disqualifications? Bonfim has gone past Shange now. Who
:35:31. > :35:42.wants to get a view of those ahead. That is just a caution for Arevalo,
:35:43. > :35:47.not a red card. Colombia ahead of the Russian athletes competing as a
:35:48. > :35:52.neutral, then the Brazilian, will he get amongst the medals? Can he hang
:35:53. > :36:01.onto this? He's carrying one read but these to moving well. Shirobokov
:36:02. > :36:04.has a little look, I'm not sure what he was looking out. Maybe one of the
:36:05. > :36:11.walk is going in the opposite direction. They have got to time
:36:12. > :36:16.this right. Arevalo looks tired, working so hard. Bonfim again
:36:17. > :36:20.looking across, maybe at the board that signifies how many reds, and
:36:21. > :36:27.that's a smart thing to do because it will tell him he has got one. Now
:36:28. > :36:31.Shange has picked up one and that is not the maintaining contact, that's
:36:32. > :36:35.for the bent knee so the South African finally picks up a warning,
:36:36. > :36:40.but not these three. Nothing happening as far as the top two are
:36:41. > :36:46.concerned. Shirobokov, a Russian junior record for him in Sochi but
:36:47. > :36:52.you went to the European World Cup he only finished 12. Linke was well
:36:53. > :36:56.behind him here so that wasn't a good form guide coming into here but
:36:57. > :37:00.then he went into the junior Championships recently and won the
:37:01. > :37:09.10,000m title. Pain etched on the face here of Arevalo, trying once
:37:10. > :37:14.more to break the Russian, trying to get a bit of daylight between him
:37:15. > :37:19.and this 18-year-old. Bonfim looks like he may have given up the chase
:37:20. > :37:23.for gold and silver but the bronze will be his if he can keep it
:37:24. > :37:30.together in the last few hundred metres. The Russian looks back, for
:37:31. > :37:34.the first time isn't concentrated on winning this, and Arevalo moving
:37:35. > :37:39.away. He has been patient, he's kept his technique together and he has
:37:40. > :37:43.been the one who has been pushing and pushing. Finally he is not only
:37:44. > :37:54.broken the park but he's broken Shirobokov. So Arevalo, former world
:37:55. > :38:03.junior champion himself, now 24, and heading for what could be a personal
:38:04. > :38:09.best for him as well as he holds his technique together. Being cheered by
:38:10. > :38:12.these big crowds on The Mall. It wasn't the day for Tom Bosworth who
:38:13. > :38:17.was the first to be disqualified after leading in the early stages of
:38:18. > :38:24.pushing on. And I think it's the Colombian flag he has in his hand,
:38:25. > :38:28.not a drink, not a sponge. He is always prepared or has been
:38:29. > :38:32.preparing for this victory way before anyone else. Another look
:38:33. > :38:39.behind, there is no challenge coming. Shirobokov has nothing
:38:40. > :38:43.really here, and he moves into the home stretch, the Colombian flag
:38:44. > :38:49.already draped. He just needs to keep going, and off he goes. The
:38:50. > :38:54.chief judge can make a late disqualification. He's having a very
:38:55. > :39:01.close look. The Russian Shirobokov is making one last surge but it is
:39:02. > :39:06.gold for Colombia! The Silver goes to Shirobokov. A great race in the
:39:07. > :39:13.end, congratulations for the youngster. And Bonfim, after a
:39:14. > :39:19.fourth place at the Olympic Games in his home crowd, now gets the bronze
:39:20. > :39:28.for Brazil, and Arevalo looks to the sky. Shange, who made that massive
:39:29. > :39:34.effort to get up to the group, went to hard too soon. Linke coming in
:39:35. > :39:39.fifth place. The Olympic bronze-medallist Bert Smith behind
:39:40. > :39:47.him, and very tired men coming in. A new national record it was the big
:39:48. > :40:04.Colombian. He has taken a big chunk of his best. Shirobokov just inside
:40:05. > :40:07.1.19 and Bonfim with a new national record as well, in third place. It
:40:08. > :40:14.was the worst of days for Tom Bosworth. Callum Wilkinson is still
:40:15. > :40:18.going with a kilometre to go, and after two red cards early on its
:40:19. > :40:24.good that he managed to hold it together. The flag draped around his
:40:25. > :40:28.neck, and across his shoulders, he knew he was going to win. He
:40:29. > :40:38.prepared for this moment one map out. Arevalo of Colombia is the
:40:39. > :40:46.champion. So they continue to come across the line. Great venue, great
:40:47. > :40:50.crowds out there. They were so hoping Tom Bosworth could give them
:40:51. > :40:55.something to cheer. He did for quite a long time and it's only for Tom to
:40:56. > :40:59.explain exactly what happened out there, if he was aware he was
:41:00. > :41:04.carrying the two red cards when he went to the front, whether he knew
:41:05. > :41:07.the perilous situation he was in, which resulted in him being
:41:08. > :41:15.disqualified. He was dreaming this could be his day but it was Arevalo
:41:16. > :41:19.who became the champion. A new national record. Silver to
:41:20. > :41:25.Shirobokov and Bonfim taking the bronze.
:41:26. > :41:29.Thank you, Steve, so Colombia's Arevalo getting the first gold medal
:41:30. > :41:34.for his country at these championships. A huge celebration
:41:35. > :41:40.and he even had time to get the Colombian flag and drape it over his
:41:41. > :41:44.shoulders. Not a good time for Great Britain's Tom Bosworth who suffered
:41:45. > :41:48.three red cards which meant a disqualification. The sight of his
:41:49. > :41:52.face showed what it meant for him to go out of the race after he was
:41:53. > :42:00.leading the result. He composed himself and later on caught up with
:42:01. > :42:04.Phil. Commiserations. The pictures say it
:42:05. > :42:10.all, head in hands, what was going on from your perspective? I was just
:42:11. > :42:15.getting going. My body sometimes shuts down at around 12 K so I
:42:16. > :42:19.thought I would push on. When I'm going fast and that my best I'm
:42:20. > :42:25.usually my most technically efficient so I am gutted this has
:42:26. > :42:31.happened. It is part of racewalking, part of the event. I am going to
:42:32. > :42:34.look back at what happened, learn and get better because
:42:35. > :42:38.physiologically I can keep with those lead guys. I felt I was just
:42:39. > :42:46.moving on the steps so I will go back to the training ground and work
:42:47. > :42:51.on it. Were you aware you had two red cards? I remember going round
:42:52. > :42:55.the lap before and seeing I had one card. I felt pretty comfortable,
:42:56. > :43:02.then fought two to come in one lap was a real shock, hence my reaction
:43:03. > :43:06.of devastation. How do you manage that devastation in your mind now?
:43:07. > :43:12.Because you have but so many expectations on yourself, let alone
:43:13. > :43:17.the rest of us. Exactly, it shows how far I have come and racewalking
:43:18. > :43:22.has come, and this is just the beginning. These days happen but
:43:23. > :43:25.they make the good days taste really good. The support I have had, from
:43:26. > :43:31.my family and everyone who has come here today... I'm sorry, I let them
:43:32. > :43:36.down and I couldn't get a medal today but I know I can get a medal
:43:37. > :43:41.one day. I'm not going to be complacent, I will work hard on my
:43:42. > :43:46.technique and show what I can really do. Tom, you let nobody down, don't
:43:47. > :43:54.be so harsh on yourself, and as you say this is part of it, it is a very
:43:55. > :43:58.harsh sport. You can be picked up on the most minor things at the most
:43:59. > :44:02.brand of times. Yes, I pushed on and I felt comfortable in my technique.
:44:03. > :44:06.It was exciting, I was getting through one of the hardest parts of
:44:07. > :44:11.the race. I am running through things in my head and I know what I
:44:12. > :44:20.can do better. It is racewalking, this is part of the event and it is
:44:21. > :44:23.my first DQ in four and a half years. That is the fastest I have
:44:24. > :44:29.ever gone so it shows I'm physically able to do it. I want to be a leader
:44:30. > :44:36.of this event and a medallist one day. All I thought going through my
:44:37. > :44:45.head was, who says I cannot do this pays? Nobody. I got to know Mo well
:44:46. > :44:50.over the last few years, I looked at how he kicks away, he's just a human
:44:51. > :44:54.being and I am a human being. He had the disappointment in Beijing, and
:44:55. > :44:59.what he was able to do from that, this is really the outset of your
:45:00. > :45:05.career. Yes, it was a shame so many people had to see this one and not
:45:06. > :45:09.Rio where it went so well. I will certainly let this sink in and get
:45:10. > :45:14.stronger from it and get better. Thank you to everyone.
:45:15. > :45:25.He did not let his nation down, let his family down. But he was
:45:26. > :45:29.devastated and as he reflects on it he will be devastated. You could see
:45:30. > :45:33.underneath that, he was very much putting a brave face on it. He was
:45:34. > :45:37.saying the right things, he knows what he has to do. He needs to learn
:45:38. > :45:47.from it. You can see in these moments here, he clearly didn't
:45:48. > :45:51.know. He did not know that he had collected it. It hit him hard and
:45:52. > :46:00.emotionally knocked the stuffing out of it. He decided to push on quite
:46:01. > :46:04.early, he was going for gold. All the more devastating that it
:46:05. > :46:12.happened then. When he looks back on it and rationalises it. He will say
:46:13. > :46:17.that he's going to speed he's not gone before. He will be saying,
:46:18. > :46:26.whether they let it go before. He will learn from it and build on it.
:46:27. > :46:29.He had the fitness to do that. Now he needs to work on the technical
:46:30. > :46:39.side of it. That has been the strong point. He is not regularly
:46:40. > :46:45.disqualified. He will learn from it and say, maybe I got carried away.
:46:46. > :46:56.Maybe he will say, what do I need to work on. I won't let my technique
:46:57. > :47:05.though. Do you think he got it wrong? I think he wanted to do that
:47:06. > :47:11.and inevitably the crowd will have fed into that. I know what it's like
:47:12. > :47:17.to run up the Mall when you've got support behind you. That will have
:47:18. > :47:29.fed into him but he's prepared himself. I think he believes that he
:47:30. > :47:36.could walk at that pace. I think he thought he was taking a little bit
:47:37. > :47:43.of a risk. They came together and did not have the time or the luxury
:47:44. > :47:53.to do that. It was devastating. He will dust himself down. The other
:47:54. > :47:59.British racer in competition, Calum Wilkinson. Just under one hour and
:48:00. > :48:07.24 minutes. Jumping from junior to seniors. Let's look forward to the
:48:08. > :48:13.last evening of an incredibly exciting and dramatic World
:48:14. > :48:18.Championship. The 800 metres get under tonight. The 5000 metres is at
:48:19. > :48:39.735. It will feature Laura Muir but also Eilish McColgan. We caught up
:48:40. > :48:42.with her. You made the decision to move up. It was a difficult decision
:48:43. > :48:47.to make initially because the steeplechase is the event that I
:48:48. > :48:50.first made the other big games, made the World Championships. For me, it
:48:51. > :48:53.was quite difficult to leave behind because I felt like that was my
:48:54. > :48:59.event and the one that I really loved. But yes, I was forced into
:49:00. > :49:03.making that decision, almost, because my feet would not allow me
:49:04. > :49:07.to do another steeplechase. I had to switch from one event to another in
:49:08. > :49:20.order to continue doing what I loved. That is the decision we made.
:49:21. > :49:23.Do you feel the pressure of being related to your mother? I always get
:49:24. > :49:27.asked this ad because my mum has been my coach right the way through,
:49:28. > :49:33.I feel like I would not have got to this point had she not been there.
:49:34. > :49:39.There's always going to be that comparison, even more so now that I
:49:40. > :49:46.am doing the five K and the ten K. Have had so many difficult injuries.
:49:47. > :49:53.Always the year before the other big games. You are at your lowest moment
:49:54. > :50:05.but the thought of having such a huge Championship gives you that
:50:06. > :50:16.impetus. I had brilliant memories. Obviously then and last year. To go
:50:17. > :50:20.full circle and come back, I would never have believed that would
:50:21. > :50:25.happen. Never believe I would have two opportunities to be at the
:50:26. > :50:32.stadium. But we're here and I am excited for it to happen. We are as
:50:33. > :50:39.well. Just over three and a half hours. It has been difficult for her
:50:40. > :50:46.so just on the start line will be an achievement. She will be looking
:50:47. > :50:52.forward to it. When we look back at the shops, she has grown as an
:50:53. > :50:57.athlete. She has strengthened and worked hard on that. She has adapted
:50:58. > :51:08.her training in a way that has not been suited. Lizard would have
:51:09. > :51:12.trained with a lot of volume. Eilish need to bring a lot of crosstraining
:51:13. > :51:16.to make sure that her body does not break down and can stand up. She is
:51:17. > :51:25.still learning the event a little bit. She's still saving that little
:51:26. > :51:33.bit of energy. She's still coming into that. She still has a little
:51:34. > :51:41.bit in the tank. That is why she is finishing so strongly. Steve Cram is
:51:42. > :51:52.back with us. What do you think would be success? I've hardly seen
:51:53. > :52:00.anybody in the last few years who's been as committed as Eilish. She's
:52:01. > :52:07.so impressive. I don't know anyone who's had more injury problems or
:52:08. > :52:21.come at it from so many angles. Here she is. I think she will want to
:52:22. > :52:25.beat Laura Muir. Before these championships we would not think she
:52:26. > :52:35.would get much but she is incredibly fierce as a competitor and I think
:52:36. > :52:46.if Eilish finishes in the top eight it would be phenomenal. What about
:52:47. > :52:59.Laura Muir? That was her first five K of the season. What do we think we
:53:00. > :53:10.will see tonight? I hope Laura has had a chance to recover. Some of us
:53:11. > :53:16.were always a bit concerned about setting out the plan. Given a
:53:17. > :53:22.perfect preparation that might have been a good plan. She didn't miss
:53:23. > :53:35.loads. She didn't miss a medal in the 1500. The 5000 is hard. Ask Mo
:53:36. > :53:42.Farah. It is really difficult. It may be that the heats were more
:53:43. > :53:47.difficult than she expected. She had a couple of days to gather herself.
:53:48. > :53:54.This will be a tough final. There are very good Ethiopians in there,
:53:55. > :53:58.it is like when we looked at the 1500 metres. It is a tough task. I
:53:59. > :54:02.don't think we should expect too much from Laura tonight. It will be
:54:03. > :54:08.an eventful race. We will look forward to what we've got tonight.
:54:09. > :54:16.Not until we've heard from Calum Wilkinson. 41st in the 20 K race. I
:54:17. > :54:19.was that as an experience? Amazing. You've got to start with that crowd
:54:20. > :54:27.there. Amazing from the first to last. It is tough out there. It is
:54:28. > :54:36.really tough. Pleased to get round. But yeah, it was really tough out
:54:37. > :54:39.there. Great for the crowd to pull me through. From the moment you set
:54:40. > :54:47.foot on the course. Were you aware of how many British flags were out
:54:48. > :54:52.there? Yes, I thought it was good. It was three times as big when we
:54:53. > :55:03.were out there. It was so hard to not be like, greeting all the people
:55:04. > :55:08.that you knew. Amazing support. People like you and Tom Bosworth
:55:09. > :55:11.will take it to another level. What are you hoping to learn from this to
:55:12. > :55:17.take you forward into the senior ranks? I just wanted to get up in
:55:18. > :55:23.amongst it. That was the tactic from the off. These guys put on a show to
:55:24. > :55:28.the crowd. That was an insane time and it killed me like, I could stick
:55:29. > :55:32.around and I was out of the back door tried to cling on to was left.
:55:33. > :55:41.It's all about learning and getting the experience. It is a crowd I will
:55:42. > :55:44.not forget for a very long time. What do you hope to take from this
:55:45. > :55:54.experience that you can go into future years? It has been a real
:55:55. > :56:00.step up in class. They say nobody cares any more. You've got groped
:56:01. > :56:03.for the seniors. These guys, it is difficult when you race against
:56:04. > :56:18.them. I want to get in amongst them. They showed me they had to do it.
:56:19. > :56:25.Being there with the rest of the endurance team, not the result I
:56:26. > :56:28.would want. So much to learn. You've doubtless heard what has happened to
:56:29. > :56:38.Tom. Disqualified when he was in the lead. Comment on what he is brought
:56:39. > :56:44.to the sport? I'm gutted for him. It shows how sport is not a fairy tale
:56:45. > :56:47.this week. As much as we would love him to get a medal in front of the
:56:48. > :56:54.home crowd, racing is difficult. But everyone knows Tom Barber for
:56:55. > :56:59.racewalking. I get to work with him every day. What he's done, I can
:57:00. > :57:13.tell you there would not be a crowd like that without him. Big props to
:57:14. > :57:18.him. He's learning in the right direction. It might be the last day
:57:19. > :57:21.of the World Championships but is not the last day of the BBC's
:57:22. > :57:42.athletics coverage. That is the Grand Prix. Also to
:57:43. > :58:06.come... Then Match Of The Day two. Very
:58:07. > :58:13.quickly, highlight tonight? The men's 1500 metres. We are both
:58:14. > :58:17.really looking forward to that. I think there's going to be some good
:58:18. > :58:23.races tonight. The 5000 metres is going to be a good race. I'm
:58:24. > :58:29.crossing my fingers for Chris O'Hare in the 1500 metres. I think all of
:58:30. > :58:34.this. Make sure you're with us. I will be floating around the stadium.
:58:35. > :59:03.We will look forward to being in your company. Good night.
:59:04. > :59:06.The latest of our Premier League commentaries for you this season,
:59:07. > :59:09.the whole game in full here on 5 Live.
