:01:09. > :01:18.CHORAL MUSIC. In front of his home crowd in the
:01:19. > :01:21.city he knows so well, the city he loves. The track that set him on
:01:22. > :01:34.this brilliant journey. It's never been as quick as this,
:01:35. > :01:40.it's never been as hard as this. This is phenomenal racing. The
:01:41. > :01:47.British best with the heart pounding. He's a one-man world
:01:48. > :02:07.superpower! Gold for Farrah! What a night it was. It's very much
:02:08. > :02:11.the morning after the night before at the London Stadium in the Queen
:02:12. > :02:16.Elizabeth Park. We've had a few showers this morning and we are all
:02:17. > :02:21.here. Michael is busy working away on the other side of the studio on
:02:22. > :02:28.some analysis. It's ladies morning on this side of the studio. Jed --
:02:29. > :02:33.Jessica Ennis-Hill, Paula Radcliffe and Denise Lewis will reflect on a
:02:34. > :02:40.fantastic first day. The newspapers reflecting that. Some fantastic
:02:41. > :02:47.shots of the family and Mo celebrating. This picture on the
:02:48. > :02:51.front of the times, giving the Ethiopian the eye, but there were so
:02:52. > :02:56.many moments where he was whipping up the crowd, beating his chest,
:02:57. > :03:02.giving a performance within a performance last night. He was. It
:03:03. > :03:07.was the first time really where aside from controlling everybody
:03:08. > :03:13.else in the race, he also controlled and orchestrated the crowd. He
:03:14. > :03:19.wanted to enjoy this second occasion here at major championships inside
:03:20. > :03:24.this stage and make the moment and create memories. A master tactician
:03:25. > :03:28.and controlling the crowd, but staying on his feet, the balance and
:03:29. > :03:34.boys. There was clearly a plan to keep him from the front. Try to put
:03:35. > :03:38.him off. On the last lap it was partly his fault because he was
:03:39. > :03:44.checking around when he got caught and lost his balance. But to stay on
:03:45. > :03:49.his feet, we gain himself and just to be to control everything from
:03:50. > :03:53.that point in. We've heard it time and again, if he's in the right
:03:54. > :03:57.position with a lap to go, you never bet against them. Let's look at the
:03:58. > :04:03.last lap. Until this point nothing seemed certain, it was incredible.
:04:04. > :04:11.Three very, very good Kenyon 's and checked a guy still there. One lap
:04:12. > :04:18.to go for Mo Farah. He's been clever, he's waited little. Now it's
:04:19. > :04:22.where he's been before. Can he hold them off? He's done it before, he's
:04:23. > :04:27.done it in London before, he's done it in the World Championships
:04:28. > :04:34.before, he's been tripped before. Come on, Mo! The crowd are on their
:04:35. > :04:39.feet. Tanui couldn't beat him last year, checked the guy has never had
:04:40. > :04:45.the chance. The British best with the heart pounding beneath us. Mo
:04:46. > :04:53.Farah in the front, controlling things. One more effort from Mo
:04:54. > :04:58.Farah and here he goes! Mo Farah stretches away! Chapter guide trying
:04:59. > :05:03.to chase in, it's not over yet, but Mo Farah is going to win it, he's
:05:04. > :05:10.going to take another world title. He's a one-man world superpower.
:05:11. > :05:14.Gold for Farah! So many people have said it in the
:05:15. > :05:26.last 12 hours, it was one of the greatest races that people have ever
:05:27. > :05:30.seen. Such a thrilling 26 minutes. Thrilling, adrenaline pumping. I
:05:31. > :05:35.don't know how Mo must have felt because the energy from the crowd
:05:36. > :05:40.was immense. What a race, what a man and how he managed to stay on his
:05:41. > :05:46.feet was incredible. There was jeopardy at every corner. Just to be
:05:47. > :05:52.able to come away with that medal again was hard. It doesn't get
:05:53. > :05:56.easier. This is the end for him, his last ever 10,000 metres on the
:05:57. > :06:04.track. Who would he want to be here with him? His family. They were all
:06:05. > :06:08.on the track. For him it was the most special moment. You perform
:06:09. > :06:12.like you do time after time, but to have your family there witnessing
:06:13. > :06:17.it, your children being part of it, all those memories and images they
:06:18. > :06:20.can look back on will be so special. It was so unique to have an
:06:21. > :06:27.experience like that. His history on this track, the Olympics and the
:06:28. > :06:31.Anniversary Games, he always delivers. He always races when he
:06:32. > :06:38.says he will. He very rarely pulls out. He's a championship performer,
:06:39. > :06:43.he gets it right on the big occasion every time. People will say who's
:06:44. > :06:48.the greatest? We can have the debate for ages. He hasn't run world
:06:49. > :06:53.records, but every time he needs to get it right, he does and that's
:06:54. > :06:58.hard. An event when you're logging miles and miles week after week, to
:06:59. > :07:04.not get injured and not break down in the build-up, that's a real
:07:05. > :07:06.skill. Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of Great Britain and
:07:07. > :07:57.Northern Ireland. It was a beautiful moment and all
:07:58. > :08:01.the more so because what doesn't happen generally is you get your
:08:02. > :08:05.medals so soon after the race. Within minutes he was in his
:08:06. > :08:10.tracksuit and getting it. The crowd could appreciate him getting his
:08:11. > :08:19.medal. He did the mobile with the others. -- the mobile. They will
:08:20. > :08:24.always be part of one of those historic races. It's been noted on
:08:25. > :08:28.social media and we've been talking about it, we had seen rehearsals of
:08:29. > :08:33.the medal ceremony and we wondered whether it would stay the same.
:08:34. > :08:37.There is no flag hoisting, only a low-level flag, someone holding a
:08:38. > :08:42.flag in front of you from the British military services. It seems
:08:43. > :08:47.a little bit... Not quite the respect of the flag you would like?
:08:48. > :08:52.It's different. When you stand on the podium, it's nice to see your
:08:53. > :09:03.flag raised and flying high and floating in the wind. I personally
:09:04. > :09:08.would prefer it. The idea was to move the event onto the ceremonies.
:09:09. > :09:13.So they are not long and drawn out. I understand why they've done it,
:09:14. > :09:19.but the feedback is correct. You're missing that moment and does it
:09:20. > :09:24.really... Do you save that much time? For the athletes, it is a
:09:25. > :09:28.significant thing to see that flag. I've not noticed the flags as much
:09:29. > :09:34.as you normally would. It's the focus as well, where do you look?
:09:35. > :09:40.Your eyes naturally follow the flag up. It's that celebration and that
:09:41. > :09:45.moment for you and that's not there. I think you'll have less people
:09:46. > :09:50.crying on the podium. I think that emotion lifts as you lift and your
:09:51. > :09:53.heart soars into the sky. It allows you to have that moment to cast your
:09:54. > :10:00.mind back on the year and how you've got to that point. It's a really
:10:01. > :10:05.special moment. Maybe less tears in this championship! There aren't few
:10:06. > :10:10.golds on his CV and last night he added to that. Let's remind
:10:11. > :10:17.ourselves of his tally across the ages. It is incredible, ridiculous.
:10:18. > :10:21.Ten in global championships. Last night was the start of his attempt
:10:22. > :10:28.to get five doubles in a row at global games. What last night has
:10:29. > :10:32.done, it will be tough for that 5000 metres. That was the perceived
:10:33. > :10:37.wisdom last night. The time of the race will make that a really
:10:38. > :10:42.challenging V-Day. The way the others raised, the way they forced
:10:43. > :10:46.him to run hard. He's run very close to his personal best. But he does
:10:47. > :10:51.have a good amount of time and he is the master at getting the recovery
:10:52. > :10:56.right. He has everything in place to do everything right over the next
:10:57. > :11:00.couple of days to recover. It's not really, really stacked 5000 metres
:11:01. > :11:06.against him. At his best, he should be able to control that and to come
:11:07. > :11:15.through the heats expending minimum energy. Do you think he's the
:11:16. > :11:18.respect he deserves in the wider sporting pantheon? He's never been
:11:19. > :11:23.in the top three of sports personality of the year. This year
:11:24. > :11:28.of all years you think surely now the public will get the hind him and
:11:29. > :11:33.recognise what he's done. He literally cannot do more. Sports
:11:34. > :11:38.personality is a different thing and it's hard to predict how that will
:11:39. > :11:42.go, there are so many aboard -- outstanding performances. If you are
:11:43. > :11:47.a fan of athletics come at you know how hard it is to achieve what he's
:11:48. > :11:52.achieved. That transcends through sports. The public appreciate how
:11:53. > :11:56.hard it's been for him to maintain that level of performance over the
:11:57. > :12:01.years. Whether he will win not we don't know. It's all personal taste
:12:02. > :12:06.and different things that guide people to where they vote. Because
:12:07. > :12:13.he's made it look so seemingly easy, people think it just comes to him.
:12:14. > :12:18.He's a master. As a spectator, you think he's doing well, the director
:12:19. > :12:24.and I could run that speed. If you try to comprehend how fast he runs
:12:25. > :12:32.over that distance. 120 miles per week. Ridiculous. He deserves to be
:12:33. > :12:39.up there. Explain how hard it is to do that for so long. He's not had
:12:40. > :12:45.injury breaks from relentless. He's had injuries. He manages them. He
:12:46. > :12:52.gets over them so quickly. It's very, very hard, particularly as you
:12:53. > :12:56.get older. I'm not saying he's old, but he's 34. His body doesn't absorb
:12:57. > :13:01.and cope with training as well as it did before. He finds it harder to
:13:02. > :13:06.recover. It's a way of adapting and bringing in the whole gamut of
:13:07. > :13:11.everything, stability, weights work, everything that helps him keep his
:13:12. > :13:19.balance, he maintains his form to be a butter run as quickly as he does.
:13:20. > :13:27.-- to be able to run. He's very lucky in terms of his body. It's one
:13:28. > :13:31.of his talents, being able to manage that injury risk against putting the
:13:32. > :13:37.hard work in and the quality work in that enables him to be in shape.
:13:38. > :13:43.That's partly to do with the setup. He moved to Oregon because the
:13:44. > :13:47.facilities are so fantastic and because he has the rehabilitation
:13:48. > :13:51.and the maintenance at his disposal. Yes and no because he doesn't spend
:13:52. > :14:00.much time in Oregon any more. He went into that setup and he saw...
:14:01. > :14:04.The Mo Farah of 2009 and 2010 did not lift much, didn't do much in the
:14:05. > :14:08.gym, was pretty weak in terms of his strength and that was the biggest
:14:09. > :14:13.difference when he came back from Oregon. He worked with the likes of
:14:14. > :14:19.David McKendry and does a lot of core stability work to make sure he
:14:20. > :14:25.can maintain that form and speed. The contrast between the 2008
:14:26. > :14:29.Olympics and 2016. Last year we did a split screen of his upper body and
:14:30. > :14:33.his style of running and what it did to his shoulder girdle and
:14:34. > :14:40.everything. The style of his running is different. The stride length, the
:14:41. > :14:48.turnover, the cadence, the speed he is able to get. Also his physique,
:14:49. > :14:53.his diet. More attention to that. He's very, very lean. As you get
:14:54. > :14:58.older, these other things you have to focus on. The tiny changes you
:14:59. > :15:02.make to your training or your style that make a huge difference because
:15:03. > :15:07.you're getting older and picking up problems. Now he's moving onto the
:15:08. > :15:11.roads after these championships. He is not retiring. What will that do
:15:12. > :15:16.to his training regime and how will he have to adapt? Sounds like a
:15:17. > :15:21.Rolling Stone! I'm sure he won't live like that.
:15:22. > :15:28.His training will change that much. His mileage, he hasn't got much
:15:29. > :15:32.further to go, so that won't change a lot. The biggest changes will be
:15:33. > :15:36.mentally. He has to get his head around the fact that he's now going
:15:37. > :15:42.to a distance where he is not the king. He has to learn it. I would be
:15:43. > :15:49.very surprised if he is as good at the marathon straight off as he has
:15:50. > :15:52.been at five and ten. To have that range, to run with the very best at
:15:53. > :15:57.the marathon, it will not come easy and he will have to work at it. You
:15:58. > :16:01.have to want that if you're going to keep going, especially with that bag
:16:02. > :16:04.of gold medals you have already windbag. But if anybody can do it
:16:05. > :16:08.with his mental strength, its Mo Farah. He begins his assault on the
:16:09. > :16:10.5000 metres with a heat on Wednesday. A few days off. Here's
:16:11. > :16:21.what else is coming up this morning. Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson
:16:22. > :16:28.begins her bid for a medal in the heptathlon. The 100-metre hurdles
:16:29. > :16:31.are first. The woman she will be changing down is Belgium's Nafi
:16:32. > :16:36.Thiam, the reigning Olympic champion. Wayde van Niekerk begins
:16:37. > :16:44.his Championships and the first of six races in six days as he goes for
:16:45. > :16:47.the 200 and 400-metre gold. Olympic finalist Matthew Hudson-Smith is the
:16:48. > :16:53.fastest of three Brits in the 400-metre heats. Double Olympic
:16:54. > :16:59.champion Elaine Thompson looks to continue her domination of the 100
:17:00. > :17:04.metres in 2017. Hoping to upset Thompson will be Dafne Schippers,
:17:05. > :17:09.who won 100-metre silver in Beijing two years ago. Double world champion
:17:10. > :17:16.Katharina Liebherr when is looking for a third successive gold eligible
:17:17. > :17:18.jump. Sophie Hitchon will be aiming to build on her Olympic bronze from
:17:19. > :17:35.Rio last summer. Ryan Crouser and Kovacs are the ones
:17:36. > :17:37.to watch in the triple jump. Katerina Johnson-Thompson will want
:17:38. > :17:42.a strong start in the 100-metre hurdles. Sophie Hitchon will be
:17:43. > :17:49.strutting her stuff in the women's hammer qualification. We'll get our
:17:50. > :17:54.first chance to see global star Wayde van Niekerk in action in 400
:17:55. > :18:04.metres. The women's triple jump qualification at 11. KJT is back in
:18:05. > :18:11.action at 11:30am the women's 100 heats with reigning Olympic champion
:18:12. > :18:19.Elaine Thompson taken to the track. The morning session will end with
:18:20. > :18:24.the men's 800 metres. Sadly no world record-holder and winner from 2012
:18:25. > :18:27.here because of injury bust up the 1500 women, four of them qualifying,
:18:28. > :18:36.and it's a great evening for them. We can move to the heptathlon and
:18:37. > :18:41.Toni Minichiello has joined us on the sofa. It's a heptathlon
:18:42. > :18:47.heavyweight sofa, and a mean at with regard to knowledge and nothing
:18:48. > :18:52.else! We have kept these two apart. It's an interesting dynamic, coach
:18:53. > :19:01.and former... I'm Tony, how do you do! It begins. Snubbing him already.
:19:02. > :19:05.All three of you have an opinion on this, but the morning of the
:19:06. > :19:09.heptathlon, you wake up, I assume everything is ready the night before
:19:10. > :19:13.come you have pinned on your number. When you wake up, what are the
:19:14. > :19:17.feelings going on inside you. And for you, this is your first
:19:18. > :19:20.championship where you are retired. It's an early start for all the
:19:21. > :19:24.heptathlete is. You have waited for this moment for however long and the
:19:25. > :19:27.adrenaline is pumping, on the warm up track trying to prepare the best
:19:28. > :19:32.you can. It's the feeling of knowing you can't do any more at this stage.
:19:33. > :19:36.You have to perform whether you are carrying an injury or if you are in
:19:37. > :19:41.the best shape of your life. It's nerve-racking. And it's two days of
:19:42. > :19:45.nerve-racking. When you're on the blocks for the hurdles, the first
:19:46. > :19:49.event, and the gun goes, do the nerves take the back seat and it's a
:19:50. > :19:56.different mindset? It is completely. You start taking stock of what you
:19:57. > :19:59.need to do next. Moving through the hurdles, and it's about three
:20:00. > :20:03.composing yourself for the high jump. For Jess, she was one of the
:20:04. > :20:07.better jumpers. It's a long competition. You have to stay
:20:08. > :20:11.relaxed, keep your mind going in and out of what you need to focus on and
:20:12. > :20:16.then coming back to the skill. That's where the beauty of
:20:17. > :20:20.heptathlon starts to take shape. The two days is about managing your
:20:21. > :20:26.mental state and keeping composure, regardless of whether things are
:20:27. > :20:29.going great or disastrously wrong. Arguably for Katerina
:20:30. > :20:32.Johnson-Thompson, that has been one of the biggest challenges, the
:20:33. > :20:36.mental side of the condition when things haven't gone right in certain
:20:37. > :20:38.events. She hasn't been strong in that area and allowed things to
:20:39. > :20:43.affect her. She hasn't been able to close it off and move away from it.
:20:44. > :20:47.That's an incredible skill, and one that Jess had, a bad performance
:20:48. > :20:52.would wash over her. There's nothing you can do so just move on and go to
:20:53. > :20:57.the next challenge. KJT has struggled in that, carrying it from
:20:58. > :21:01.event to event. Hopefully we will see it change. I think she's in a
:21:02. > :21:06.more relaxed place. More relaxed in France so hopefully that more
:21:07. > :21:10.relaxed state of mind will help her should things go bad. She has
:21:11. > :21:16.changed her setup since Rio, moving to Montpelier. Denise has been an
:21:17. > :21:24.adviser, a mentor, you have been involved in her adaptation. Athletes
:21:25. > :21:27.need to make change and sometimes they don't have the best person to
:21:28. > :21:32.talk to and they need a sounding board. Helping to make those
:21:33. > :21:36.decisions I think is valuable. Like Tony says, she's in a happy place,
:21:37. > :21:38.and that's important. You went out to that happy place to catch up with
:21:39. > :21:44.her. Let's see what she had to say. It's pretty here. Gorgeous. The
:21:45. > :22:04.cathedral is just to the left. Very different from Wavertree! Yeah,
:22:05. > :22:10.it's different in many respects. That will always be home, though?
:22:11. > :22:14.Yeah. I remember walking on the track with you here in November and
:22:15. > :22:22.there was so much uncertainty. But watching Ukraine today, you seem at
:22:23. > :22:26.home. -- watching you train today. I remember it well, and I have come to
:22:27. > :22:32.this track six times a week now. It feels like home to me. Going a
:22:33. > :22:37.little bit deeper. When I am here as well. Because I don't know much
:22:38. > :22:47.French I feel like the mundane, negative comments you hear like, it
:22:48. > :22:52.doesn't go in. All I hear is positive things and what I need to
:22:53. > :23:01.do in training. It's just a really positive place for me to be in.
:23:02. > :23:08.How would you assess where you are at the moment? I've never been in
:23:09. > :23:12.this position before where I have been completely injury free before a
:23:13. > :23:15.competition. I've had a lot of competition practice and now it's
:23:16. > :23:19.just going through each event each week and trying to fine tune. I feel
:23:20. > :23:25.like I'm in the best place I have been ahead of the major
:23:26. > :23:30.championships. What would you measure success in London? I would
:23:31. > :23:35.like to get a personal best and a medal. I would like to have no
:23:36. > :23:41.regrets. To know I have given it my all in every event. Your principal
:23:42. > :23:47.coach, Bertrand, he is said to me that success for him would be that
:23:48. > :23:53.you can complete to the best of your ability, but just forget everything
:23:54. > :23:56.and be free in all your events. I like the way he has but had. I like
:23:57. > :24:01.to be free in competition and not have the weight of the world on my
:24:02. > :24:06.shoulders. You have found a new apartment, you have started learning
:24:07. > :24:09.the language, which is tough. Do you think you will transfer that
:24:10. > :24:15.independence into the competitive arena? Yes, that's one of the things
:24:16. > :24:20.Bertrand has been working on with me, not depending fully on him in
:24:21. > :24:26.competitions. Sometimes I'm doing gym sessions alone. I'm still not
:24:27. > :24:33.completely independent. My bathroom light in my apartment has blown. I
:24:34. > :24:39.don't know how to fix it! You will be looking on the Internet. I
:24:40. > :24:42.wouldn't do it if I was in Liverpool, never mind going to a
:24:43. > :24:51.French place in trying to get the right light bulb. I'm just Tempo Mac
:24:52. > :25:01.in the dark! -- I'm just peeing in the dark! All sorts of connotations.
:25:02. > :25:15.Those are her personal bests from the year. And Gotzis was one of the
:25:16. > :25:21.best heptathlon conditions we have seen in a long time. And she was
:25:22. > :25:26.there. What do you take from her PB this year? Very little to be honest.
:25:27. > :25:32.The only actual personal best was the hurdles, 13.2 nine. Everything
:25:33. > :25:36.else is in a state of flux. She has changed the way she has storeowner
:25:37. > :25:40.shot put, not doing the hop back any more, running across the circle.
:25:41. > :25:44.Long jump has changed quite radically. She's just getting used
:25:45. > :25:48.to javelin. You can't see anything from that. You can see a 9-point
:25:49. > :25:54.improvement but it's not that different from what it was before.
:25:55. > :25:57.At the moment finding it steady. Because you don't compete in all
:25:58. > :26:02.events very often in the heptathlon it could come together and you don't
:26:03. > :26:07.know when that will happen. We haven't seen anything else this
:26:08. > :26:11.season, unfortunately, that shows that there are better performances
:26:12. > :26:15.to come. The only time we saw anything was the sixth round jump at
:26:16. > :26:19.the Anniversary Games. But you only get three jumps in the heptathlon.
:26:20. > :26:22.There is the potential there but we haven't conceding it on a consistent
:26:23. > :26:29.level every day to know if improvement is there. -- we haven't
:26:30. > :26:33.seen it. Looking at the competition and what they have in their locker
:26:34. > :26:39.at the moment, there were PB is set for all the top three this year. The
:26:40. > :26:44.progress from Nafi Thiam, 11th in Beijing when Jess won and then
:26:45. > :26:51.winning in Rio, an incredible leap forward, Denise? It is, but we know
:26:52. > :26:55.she's very talented. She was waiting, she didn't know she would
:26:56. > :26:59.score big in Rio, and she didn't know she would score big in Gotzis.
:27:00. > :27:07.But the rivals for me are the ones that have significantly improved.
:27:08. > :27:15.Schafer has put on another 200 points on her personal best. And
:27:16. > :27:27.Laura has also been improving steadily for the last two years. KJT
:27:28. > :27:32.hasn't stagnated, but she has had injuries that limited her progress.
:27:33. > :27:36.Jess, you compete against all of them. You had a fantastic duel with
:27:37. > :27:44.Nafi Thiam in Rio. Did she surprise you how much she had stepped up?
:27:45. > :27:48.Both Tony and I knew she had great potential, but coming 11th and 12th
:27:49. > :27:52.in Beijing to winning in the Olympics in Rio was a massively
:27:53. > :27:56.forwards, but she has always had massive potential. No great
:27:57. > :28:07.surprise, but watching Gotzis this year and seeing how the scores have
:28:08. > :28:11.ramped up, three girls scoring over 68, it's been an incredible leap
:28:12. > :28:16.forward for the event. It's exciting. I'm kind of glad I'm not
:28:17. > :28:22.there! I tapped out at the right time. It's very exciting for the
:28:23. > :28:26.event. Tony, what do you think Katarina Johnson-Thompson will need
:28:27. > :28:30.to get into the medals today? We know her weaker events. She says she
:28:31. > :28:35.needs to get better at the better events. I don't know what that
:28:36. > :28:38.means, to be honest. I think you have seven events and have to treat
:28:39. > :28:43.them all with the same respect. You don't discount one in favour of the
:28:44. > :28:47.other. It's about diminishing returns, how much can you improve
:28:48. > :28:56.your high jump? Looking through here, she is solid in the hurdles,
:28:57. > :29:00.if she can reproduce 1.98, improving the shot put to over 13 metres,
:29:01. > :29:05.which she has done in the past, that's another 40 points. There's
:29:06. > :29:09.another close to 100 points of improvement. Additional improvement
:29:10. > :29:13.in the long jump, if you can go an extra 20 centimetres it would be
:29:14. > :29:19.another 60 points. Overall it will not give you a score to go beyond
:29:20. > :29:26.the 68, but it will put the other girls under pressure. When they were
:29:27. > :29:30.out ahead, they can relax. If you put them under pressure, so they
:29:31. > :29:40.have to perform. With Jess and others retiring, there is no big
:29:41. > :29:45.statuesque figure to intimidate, so now the girls come through. All that
:29:46. > :29:49.KJT can do is perform solidly and put the girls under pressure so they
:29:50. > :29:55.have to perform. That way I think she can speak in and get on the
:29:56. > :30:02.podium. I think where athlete goes over 7000 points, that stature,
:30:03. > :30:08.that's significant. The other three girls, KJT, Schafer and Laura, they
:30:09. > :30:13.believe they are in the mix. Looking at her hurdling, and that's
:30:14. > :30:16.digressing a little bit, but the running events for Nafi Thiam have
:30:17. > :30:22.massively improved and she has run really hard. I think that's where
:30:23. > :30:27.KJT needs to think, what can she do in the throwing? I don't want to
:30:28. > :30:33.harp on about it, but it's much of a muchness until the throwing. The gap
:30:34. > :30:39.is so big. She can focus on strong events, which are on a par with Nafi
:30:40. > :30:43.Thiam, but her weaker events are so far away. She's a fantastic javelin
:30:44. > :30:44.thrower, so she can creep closer and I think that's where she can make
:30:45. > :30:58.the difference. They are getting ready for the
:30:59. > :31:04.hurdles. Kat will be in the fourth heat, the quicker women. Thiam is in
:31:05. > :31:07.the third. It's not her strongest event, the hurdles, Thiam. She
:31:08. > :31:12.doesn't hit the top of the leaderboard after the first event.
:31:13. > :31:16.She's improved. She worked incredibly hard on her speed this
:31:17. > :31:23.winter. Her time on the hurdles is coming down, her 200 metres time is
:31:24. > :31:27.getting closer to breaking 24 seconds. Although she makes not be
:31:28. > :31:35.at the top part of this event, it will give her confidence if she can
:31:36. > :31:39.run a personal best. A quick word on Morgan Lake. She's focusing on the
:31:40. > :31:45.high jump. Would we expect her to come back to the heptathlon? There's
:31:46. > :31:50.such great heritage of women multi-eventers. Million dollar
:31:51. > :31:53.question. I think her heart would love to, there's unfinished
:31:54. > :32:01.business. She's having fun in the high jump. She's got great
:32:02. > :32:05.potential. But not just yet. All British hopes on Katarina
:32:06. > :32:09.Johnson-Thompson this time round. Can she get herself a medal? She
:32:10. > :32:13.will need a great start in the medals. Such an exciting
:32:14. > :32:18.competition. Let's get underway with the first of the heats. Steve Cram
:32:19. > :32:24.is ready to commentate. Good morning.
:32:25. > :32:30.Morning! Great light last night, I had a nice warm down, and nice bath
:32:31. > :32:34.and I'm raring to go. Recovery programme is working well and
:32:35. > :32:40.looking forward to a cracking second day. Great weekend in store, today
:32:41. > :32:47.and tomorrow. The marathon is tomorrow. Lots of interest right
:32:48. > :32:52.through the weekend. Still a lot of people outside waiting to get in. It
:32:53. > :32:55.views, with all the security arrangements that have to be in
:32:56. > :33:02.place these days means it takes a bit longer to get in. They will be
:33:03. > :33:06.some -- they will be rewarded with some great athletics this morning.
:33:07. > :33:13.The heptathlon getting underway and we have the 400 metres heats and the
:33:14. > :33:22.800 metres heats as well. We will be here until about 1pm. Better weather
:33:23. > :33:29.today. Some showers overnight replaced with beautiful sunshine.
:33:30. > :33:34.T-shirts and shorts the order of the day. These two young ladies, talking
:33:35. > :33:45.about the future of the event, they were number one and two in the
:33:46. > :33:56.European Junior Championships. Shukh is the world youth record holder.
:33:57. > :34:01.We'll be hearing more of them over the next few years. Talking about
:34:02. > :34:08.youngsters, this young lady was third in the world Junior
:34:09. > :34:27.Championships last year, to Thiam. We will see her in heats
:34:28. > :34:37.number three, the quickest this season in this race, Aguilar. Barman
:34:38. > :34:43.from India, the Asian champion. New personal best this year. Yet to
:34:44. > :34:49.reach 6000 points. This young lady has just managed that, at 6040 this
:34:50. > :34:55.year, the Brazilian, De Sousa. Two very good youngsters. Alina Shukh
:34:56. > :35:05.from Ukraine. Not one of her better events. Ruckstuhl, not so bad. She
:35:06. > :35:07.finished second behind the Ukrainian at those European Junior
:35:08. > :35:24.Championships. First event of the heptathlon. Four
:35:25. > :35:32.heats to come. This is the first of the four. Looking for a good start,
:35:33. > :35:36.all of these athletes. Beautiful conditions. We've seen how fast this
:35:37. > :36:05.track is. Not a breath of wind this morning.
:36:06. > :36:17.Ruckstuhl will be watching for the clock. 13.81. Great start for the
:36:18. > :36:22.19-year-old. There is the first smile of the morning. What a way to
:36:23. > :36:28.get your heptathlon underway. It's a good, solid run. She's taken a tenth
:36:29. > :36:34.off her personal best, having already improved her personal best
:36:35. > :36:38.this year. Really nice to see. She's really aggressive into the first
:36:39. > :36:44.hurdle. This is saying to me that this young lady is really confident
:36:45. > :36:49.in her technical abilities. Charges at every single barrier. Good
:36:50. > :36:53.technique. When she gets stronger and improves her sprinting speed,
:36:54. > :37:03.that personal-best will tumble yet again.
:37:04. > :37:08.(STUDIO) Thiam goes in heat three and Katarina Johnson-Thompson goes
:37:09. > :37:16.in heat four. Back on the track in a moment. Let's head outside. We've
:37:17. > :37:20.caught up with Michael Johnson. Me and Michael enjoying the British
:37:21. > :37:24.sunshine. We said we weren't prepared for this. But we have to
:37:25. > :37:30.soak it up. You're more prepared than I am. I was wearing a black
:37:31. > :37:35.bomber jacket a moment ago. What's nice to see is hundreds of fans
:37:36. > :37:41.making their way into the stadium. It's great to see people coming out
:37:42. > :37:46.in their droves. Absolutely, people have been waiting for this since
:37:47. > :37:49.London 2012, the chance to host another great championships. It
:37:50. > :37:54.started fantastic last night. I'd like to say they are here to see
:37:55. > :37:59.some fantastic competition, which we will see, but of course they are
:38:00. > :38:03.here to see Usain Bolt. If you are coming, bring high factor because
:38:04. > :38:09.it's heating up. Let's talk sprinting. Usain, first of his
:38:10. > :38:15.swansong is tonight. Last night, did we see some scapegoating? He talked
:38:16. > :38:19.about blocks. We saw a frustrated Usain Bolt and he showed that during
:38:20. > :38:24.the race. I'm sure he will want to come back out this evening in the
:38:25. > :38:29.semifinals and correct his mistakes. It wasn't a very clean race.
:38:30. > :38:33.Typically what we see with him in early rounds is he's working on
:38:34. > :38:40.things, trying to get raise sharp for the final because he hasn't had
:38:41. > :38:43.a lot of races to prepare. Last night was uncharacteristically
:38:44. > :38:49.ragged. Not a great start. He talked about the blocks and said he wasn't
:38:50. > :38:52.very comfortable with them. He said they were the worst blocks Id ever
:38:53. > :38:59.seen at a championship. I'm not sure what that's about. I've heard these
:39:00. > :39:03.blocks are a bit different, maybe not as substantial, maybe a bit
:39:04. > :39:07.flimsy. I've not seen them myself. That would play on your confidence
:39:08. > :39:12.and you can't get the propulsion you would want out of the blocks. That
:39:13. > :39:21.would not affect him in this me finals. I expect he will get that
:39:22. > :39:27.right. The British fans, a lot of support, but not so much for Justin
:39:28. > :39:34.Gatlin. That's something that is really unfortunate. We as the media
:39:35. > :39:39.created that. Two years ago in 2015 going into the World Championships
:39:40. > :39:46.in Beijing, we created this Justin Gatlin against Usain Bolt, Villains
:39:47. > :39:52.versus hero. I'm not quite sure that was the right thing to do. He's paid
:39:53. > :39:55.his price come he's served his punishment, it's not his fort rules
:39:56. > :40:00.allow people who have cheated to come back and go back into the
:40:01. > :40:03.sport. Other people have tested positive and have been banned who
:40:04. > :40:07.were in the stadium last night and will be for the rest of this week.
:40:08. > :40:15.They aren't getting booed. I'm not sure that was the right thing to do,
:40:16. > :40:18.I wasn't happy with that. It's not what we want, it was a bit of a
:40:19. > :40:23.pantomime. But he will do what he does tonight. A quick word on the
:40:24. > :40:27.British guys. Reece Prescod is a man of the future. You were impressed
:40:28. > :40:32.with his composure last light. He did really well last night. There's
:40:33. > :40:37.a difference when nobody expects anything of you. When you and I
:40:38. > :40:41.start speaking about him, he will be aware of what was said about him
:40:42. > :40:45.last night, people were impressed, into the semifinal and now there is
:40:46. > :40:49.expectation and that's a completely different approach. That's where
:40:50. > :40:54.good coaching comes in. His coach will have to say you have to block
:40:55. > :40:58.that out, don't focus on Usain Bolt or anyone else, run your own race,
:40:59. > :41:05.producer personal-best, which she will probably need to do to get to
:41:06. > :41:10.the final. -- he will probably need to do. He should take it one round
:41:11. > :41:17.at a time. Semifinals, run your best race again. Get into the final and
:41:18. > :41:21.see what happens. We've had a good look at all of them. Semifinals this
:41:22. > :41:29.evening. What have we learned from the first run out? Some beanie from
:41:30. > :41:32.South Africa, true to what we thought, eight times under ten
:41:33. > :41:37.seconds which is very impressive but he hasn't beaten anyone. He was
:41:38. > :41:42.fourth in the preliminary heat last night which is not impressive. He
:41:43. > :41:47.may not be a factor. Justin Gatlin looks smooth. Kristin Coleman most
:41:48. > :41:53.impressive. Fastest time in the world this year, only 21, from
:41:54. > :41:59.America. He took time off, which paid off because he looked fantastic
:42:00. > :42:03.last night. Bolt, we will see significant improvement in the
:42:04. > :42:07.semifinal. Things will stop to really come to light and we'll be
:42:08. > :42:11.able to get a good preview in the semifinals of what's to come tonight
:42:12. > :42:13.at the final. It will get spicy this evening. Let's go back inside for
:42:14. > :42:21.the heptathlon. Thank you and we are ready for the
:42:22. > :42:30.second heat in the 100 metres hurdles for the women's heptathlon.
:42:31. > :42:32.Broersen goes again. There are four heats and you are allocated based on
:42:33. > :42:45.your season's best times. Nadine Broersen is not a bad
:42:46. > :42:52.hurdler. Good consistency throughout.
:42:53. > :42:59.Yorgelis Rodriguez from Cuba. Seventh in Rio in the Olympics with
:43:00. > :43:04.the new Cuban record. Not the finest hurdler, but pretty strong overall.
:43:05. > :43:16.The Reina Preiner, the Austrian, silver in the European under 23
:43:17. > :43:21.championships. Xenia Krizsan of hungry was the European champion a
:43:22. > :43:33.couple of years ago. The Dutch have a good crop of heptathlete.
:43:34. > :43:39.Alysbeth Felix from Puerto Rico. Record holder for Puerto Rico in the
:43:40. > :43:45.high jump, but not so good at throwing. Shiv Shiv are cast, very
:43:46. > :43:52.experienced, sixth in Beijing a couple of years ago in the World
:43:53. > :44:02.Championships. -- Chile ski circus. Ivona Dadic took bronze at the
:44:03. > :44:07.European Championships last year. Klucinova, the Czech record-holder.
:44:08. > :44:17.All the pressure coming down on these athletes because it's an event
:44:18. > :44:23.where things can go to start. You need to attack it and be positive.
:44:24. > :44:32.Broersen, 13.39 is her personal best. Some weight off that this
:44:33. > :44:37.season, 13.68 in the hurdles. Still spectators flooding in here. The
:44:38. > :44:44.stadium is pretty full, but a few still outside. Good conditions. Not
:44:45. > :44:52.too warm, but fairly still. The second of four heats in the women's
:44:53. > :44:59.100 hurdles in the heptathlon. There was an obvious twitch from Felix.
:45:00. > :45:02.Things are slightly different for falls starts in the multi-events.
:45:03. > :45:08.You're given a little bit more grace. They won't get instantly
:45:09. > :45:11.disqualified. They have seven events to concentrate on. She will get a
:45:12. > :45:25.warning. They will all be wanting to get the
:45:26. > :45:29.race underway. Her files start is against the whole field. We will
:45:30. > :45:31.show the reaction times to confirm that, just rocking in the box, from
:45:32. > :45:47.Felix. Sorry, everyone, sorry! Setting off
:45:48. > :46:00.Dadic in lane eight as well, but it was obviously Felix. No morph --
:46:01. > :46:04.more false starts can be afforded. They have done their warming up,
:46:05. > :46:08.they know it will be along two days. You can understand why sometimes
:46:09. > :46:11.they are a bit twitchy. And for most of these women, it's not their
:46:12. > :46:19.favoured event. That's why they are in second heat.
:46:20. > :46:27.It's the stillness and silence that is so unsettling for the athletes.
:46:28. > :46:32.As Colin was saying, they are waiting a long time down here. It's
:46:33. > :46:46.a long hold for them here again. They have just come out to give the
:46:47. > :46:51.official warning. It's no disqualification, but it's for six
:46:52. > :47:05.and eight, it was for Felix and I think Dadic was set off. Another.
:47:06. > :47:11.And everyone would be out. Katarina Johnson-Thompson goes in the fourth
:47:12. > :47:17.heat, Nafi Thiam in the third. Broersen, world indoor champion of
:47:18. > :47:19.three years ago, might content for medals here. A top five finish
:47:20. > :47:52.perhaps. She goes in lane five here. On the inside of Rodriguez takes it,
:47:53. > :47:57.well inside a season best time and just inside the personal best.
:47:58. > :47:59.Pretty decent run and I think all the athletes are happy to get
:48:00. > :48:05.through without further incident. A long wait after the false start.
:48:06. > :48:10.Whether any of these athletes can content over seven events, I'm not
:48:11. > :48:14.sure. Broersen is pretty strong. A good run from Rodriguez on the
:48:15. > :48:20.inside lane. Yeah, she was out really well, Andrew. Cuba has great
:48:21. > :48:30.heritage in the hurdles, both in the men and women. They have some great
:48:31. > :48:34.technical coaches. Rodriguez, well, went early in the event, took the
:48:35. > :48:48.lead on and was rewarded with a season's best. Looking up at the
:48:49. > :48:59.screen. Men's shot put qualification is underway. Making qualifying look
:49:00. > :49:09.very easy, twice champion of the world, three-time European champion,
:49:10. > :49:20.David Storl. No Brits involved. The world has moved on and now the
:49:21. > :49:24.Americans are the danger, Ryan Crouser and Joe Kovacs. Here is Ryan
:49:25. > :49:29.Crouser, the big man, the Olympic champion. He has got within half a
:49:30. > :49:39.metre of the world record this year, 22 metres 65. Ryan Crouser rotating.
:49:40. > :49:47.Big man, controlling his long levers very well indeed. He has booked his
:49:48. > :49:50.place in tomorrow's final, joining David Storl. His team-mate Kovacs is
:49:51. > :49:58.struggling a little in the first round. He hasn't automatically
:49:59. > :50:05.qualified just yet. Krauser at 20.90, he can take his shoes off. A
:50:06. > :50:14.result of the second heat in the women's heptathlon hurdles.
:50:15. > :50:22.STUDIO: Next up in heat three, the Olympic champion Nafi Thiam. She has
:50:23. > :50:28.improved her personal best tally to more than 7000 points in Gotzis this
:50:29. > :50:35.year. We caught up with her earlier in the season.
:50:36. > :50:41.Of course it's an important event and everybody will be watching me
:50:42. > :50:49.and expecting me to do great things, especially after Gotzis. It's been
:50:50. > :50:55.different years. I think I can still be good things in London. I hope so.
:50:56. > :51:01.It would be too bad to not do a good performance there, but also there
:51:02. > :51:08.was an incredible level. A lot of girls are going strong. I don't want
:51:09. > :51:15.to put pressure on myself. I think it's most important that I still
:51:16. > :51:18.enjoy what I do that's how I always thought about my tactics, not
:51:19. > :51:24.thinking about the other ones. I don't want to change that. That's
:51:25. > :51:29.how I feel most comfortable. We will see. And she's out, the sun is
:51:30. > :51:33.shining on the stadium. And Nafi Thiam is ready to try and claim her
:51:34. > :51:39.first world title and build on her Olympic title from last year. Jess
:51:40. > :51:44.Cameron use of this is one of the events she has worked on, sprinting
:51:45. > :51:48.and running, over the winter. She looks a lot better. She is so tall
:51:49. > :51:52.that these events can be difficult and the barriers are quite low. It's
:51:53. > :51:57.about being active over the hurdles and running off strong, which she
:51:58. > :52:01.seems to do. I'm excited to see what she will run the. Physically,
:52:02. > :52:06.looking at her, she's a similar physic to Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
:52:07. > :52:10.It's interesting, showing you the physiology and how people's natural
:52:11. > :52:16.talents across the seven pieces aren't what you would predict. I'm
:52:17. > :52:19.amazed that KJT doesn't throw further, and equally
:52:20. > :52:24.Johnson-Thompson's hurdles have been one of the strong points. It's just
:52:25. > :52:29.to your make up. It's what you come to the event with com you have a
:52:30. > :52:33.natural ability in something sent it varies across athletes. What she has
:52:34. > :52:39.done, she is naturally strong. She has always been a good thrower, but
:52:40. > :52:44.she knows the speed. In some ways it has been challenging for her, but
:52:45. > :52:48.she has been able to do it. It's relaxation, she wants to stay
:52:49. > :52:56.relaxed and stay focused and not put pressure on herself. When you
:52:57. > :53:01.emerge, Tony, as she did at the Olympics last year, into the global
:53:02. > :53:05.consciousness, and now you hold that title, everybody is coming for you.
:53:06. > :53:10.As your mindset as the coach, do you have to work on that with your
:53:11. > :53:12.athletes and go into the competition with a slightly different vision?
:53:13. > :53:16.You would suspect that but the reality is to focus on yourself.
:53:17. > :53:20.What's Nafi Thiam and her coach of them really well is focus on
:53:21. > :53:26.herself, what are we strong and weak at and work on our gaps. Because of
:53:27. > :53:31.that, and the age, you can just keep improving. Lets see if she can
:53:32. > :53:38.improve and head to heat three with Steve Cram.
:53:39. > :53:54.Some of the older athletes of the event, Sharon Day Monro. Salman-Rath
:53:55. > :54:09.in lane two. Anouk Vetter was the Amsterdam champion last year.
:54:10. > :54:17.Quaresma, one a couple of years ago, the Portuguese. I knew in ten, a
:54:18. > :54:40.pretty good hurdler. -- anew in Watching for the clock. The European
:54:41. > :54:44.under 23, recent under 23 champion from Switzerland, and we have just
:54:45. > :54:50.seen her younger team-mates do very well in heat one. We have already
:54:51. > :55:00.seen quite a few personal bests in the first two heats, so be Olympic
:55:01. > :55:04.champion looking to become a double world champion. Colin and I have
:55:05. > :55:13.noticed the impressive hair work here. Getting herself set. Good
:55:14. > :55:28.conditions, not a breath of wind, warmer.
:55:29. > :55:42.Anouk Vetter has the lead on this, going very well in indeed. There is
:55:43. > :55:46.the first indicator, Anouk Vetter was delighted with her performance.
:55:47. > :55:50.A big run for her. Very close to her personal best. Not a good start from
:55:51. > :55:56.Nafi Thiam and never really got moving. You are expected to come
:55:57. > :56:00.through. A little bit of a disappointment. We will wait for the
:56:01. > :56:06.times but it must be around 13.5 for Nafi Thiam. I think she will be a
:56:07. > :56:12.bit disappointed with that. At no stage of the race was she making any
:56:13. > :56:19.ground. I would expect that would happen when somebody is running
:56:20. > :56:24.13.31. A very good run by Anouk Vetter. Taking control early.
:56:25. > :56:29.Focused well, working off each and every one of the barriers and was
:56:30. > :56:34.again rewarded with a season's best. Some of these women are hurtling
:56:35. > :56:39.very well indeed. In contrast, Nafi Thiam, a couple of questions.
:56:40. > :56:45.Because she is tall, she takes her time a bit into the first hurdle.
:56:46. > :56:50.Eight strides, when you have really long legs, it can be complicated.
:56:51. > :56:55.It's not the but she focuses on all the time. I think she is working her
:56:56. > :56:59.way through, keeping focus and running hard off all the barriers,
:57:00. > :57:01.but not quite as sharp. I think she may be a little bit disappointed
:57:02. > :57:18.because that was a full out run. Joe Kovacs in the shot put is the
:57:19. > :57:26.reigning champion, but he has opened up his account fairly unimpressive
:57:27. > :57:36.thee, 20.62 in the first round. He saw his team-mate Ryan Crouser
:57:37. > :57:40.comfortably go beyond the automatic qualifying. We were expecting to
:57:41. > :57:46.qualify with ease, he has gone over 22 metres this year, 22.57. Just
:57:47. > :57:50.separated from that, he went left and the shot went right. The power
:57:51. > :57:59.dissipates. He liked it, though, the hand in EF. 20.67, a slight
:58:00. > :58:10.improvement from Kovacs. This the hand in the air.
:58:11. > :58:16.Maybe a couple of tenths lost for Nafi Thiam. Andy Goode viewpoints as
:58:17. > :58:20.well. Not the start she would have wanted.
:58:21. > :58:31.STUDIO: How main points are we talking there? A couple of hundred
:58:32. > :58:42.outside 30 points. It means she might not score 7000, but she might
:58:43. > :58:47.get 6999. A little blip, but it will maybe affect confidence. A first
:58:48. > :58:52.glimpse of this later. Katarina Johnson-Thompson sticking out her
:58:53. > :58:55.tongue to the camera, a relaxed move will stop you couldn't think of a
:58:56. > :59:00.better arena for her to compete in. The crowd will be on her side. She
:59:01. > :59:04.has to relax into this and enjoy the atmosphere. You have to take it in.
:59:05. > :59:09.We had the amazing images from Jess in London where you just take a beat
:59:10. > :59:14.and allow the crowd to get with you. You have to use the crowds to get
:59:15. > :59:18.with you. She has seen Nafi Thiam's run. She will draw confidence from
:59:19. > :59:21.that. Although it will not be a massive difference in points at this
:59:22. > :59:25.time, if she can get a great start it will give her a mental edge going
:59:26. > :59:29.to the high jump. One of the things we talked about earlier was her
:59:30. > :59:32.mental state throughout the two days and how she has in the past let
:59:33. > :59:36.disappointment affect her next event. This is one of her stronger
:59:37. > :59:44.events. She wants to start the whole thing with a great time and post a
:59:45. > :59:46.high score on the board. Can you tell anything from her demeanour at
:59:47. > :59:50.the moment, Denise, as somebody who has spent time with her, from how
:59:51. > :59:55.she is looking? Not yet. She is in the zone right now, focused on
:59:56. > :59:59.getting a great start. It's about keeping the mental state in check at
:00:00. > :00:03.the moment and being aggressive. She knows she has to work hard. Expect
:00:04. > :00:09.her to come through really well in the latter stages of the race but
:00:10. > :00:15.it's about getting a good start. Physically she looks stronger. She
:00:16. > :00:18.has been working on her posture. She has those natural rounded shoulders,
:00:19. > :00:24.so she has been working hard on strengthening her back and call. She
:00:25. > :00:29.says she only used to train three days a week, very long sessions, so
:00:30. > :00:35.her training has changed massively. Tony looks suspicious.
:00:36. > :00:44.She was a five day train with Mike Holmes. Three days a week, a little
:00:45. > :00:50.pinch of salt. Does that mean three gym sessions or three technical
:00:51. > :00:54.sessions? If you only do three technical sessions in heptathlon,
:00:55. > :01:01.you might as well forget it! How many gym sessions a week would you
:01:02. > :01:07.be doing? I had three better after I had Reggie we had to condense it. We
:01:08. > :01:15.did long gym sessions, he made us stay in there for an hour and a
:01:16. > :01:19.half. Sorry! It's important to keep strength levels because they do drop
:01:20. > :01:23.away. Getting the balance right between when you should take time
:01:24. > :01:29.off and do your lifting. I used to do my lifting right up to the
:01:30. > :01:36.events. You didn't taper down your lifting? Maximum lifts. Working on
:01:37. > :01:43.the power. She's looking focused and strong. She needs a good start. She
:01:44. > :01:49.will be buoyed by that time from Thiam. Andrew is the commentator.
:01:50. > :01:54.When you think of great athletics moments, they are normally in the
:01:55. > :01:59.evening under the lights. But with the heptathlon, you are straight
:02:00. > :02:11.into it. There are seven finals. Nano goes in lane two. Nadine Visser
:02:12. > :02:17.ran 12.78. These are the four to -- fastest hurdler is. Williams is a
:02:18. > :02:23.very, very good hurdler. A world junior champion three years ago over
:02:24. > :02:29.the barriers. Falls down a little bit in the throes. Cachova, new
:02:30. > :02:37.personal best in the Czech Republic in June. We will let the London
:02:38. > :02:46.stadium welcome the next athlete. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.
:02:47. > :02:55.There's no hiding place in front of 60,000 people! Schafer will be a
:02:56. > :03:04.medal contender if she gets it right across the events. Former world and
:03:05. > :03:11.European junior champion. Erica Bougard, another very good hurdler.
:03:12. > :03:25.Poor shot put and javelin to say the least. Another medal contender from
:03:26. > :03:29.Latvia. Ikauniece-Admidina. Katarina Johnson-Thompson is outstanding in
:03:30. > :03:34.the high jump, the long jump, 200 metres. Very good 800-metre runner.
:03:35. > :03:40.The hurdles, doesn't quite get to the very top level yet. You think of
:03:41. > :03:46.Jessica Ennis-Hill, outstanding hurdler. In this stadium, in this
:03:47. > :03:55.event, exploding into things with 12.54, a British record at the time.
:03:56. > :03:58.Can she get close to her personal best? It all begins here in the 100
:03:59. > :04:29.hurdles. This takes it in 12.85. Nadine
:04:30. > :04:34.Visser, well clear. A decent run from Williams. It's all about the
:04:35. > :04:38.time for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. You think about exploding into that
:04:39. > :04:46.event. Perhaps a little bit of safety in the blocks. She sat for a
:04:47. > :04:51.while, it was cautious from Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Let's see her
:04:52. > :04:58.time. Colin Jackson will talk you through this one. These women, this
:04:59. > :05:06.event, very strong hurdlers. Any position above seventh place would
:05:07. > :05:10.be fantastic for Kat. 13.33. She will be very happy with that in
:05:11. > :05:18.contrast to Thiam. Look at the start. Very soft going into the
:05:19. > :05:21.first hurdle, over striding. You need good cadence, good leg speed
:05:22. > :05:27.going into the first barrier because it sets you up. But she starts
:05:28. > :05:32.making inroads into the field. A little mistake off the final
:05:33. > :05:38.barrier. 13.33 is what we are looking for. A lot of people will
:05:39. > :05:42.think she's down the field, but it's to be expected, she is against some
:05:43. > :05:50.better hurdlers. Just look for her time. Spot on, these are quality
:05:51. > :05:56.hurdlers. A lot of them have gone under 13 seconds. One other thing to
:05:57. > :06:06.talk about. ACCA nature at Medina, on the outside, she has run a
:06:07. > :06:16.terrible time. 13.71. -- Ikauniece-Admidina. Not too bad at
:06:17. > :06:21.all from Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Four hundredths of a second down on
:06:22. > :06:27.her personal best. There was the mistakes she made. She hit the next
:06:28. > :06:31.hurdle and she fell off that a little bit. That's where she could
:06:32. > :06:39.have lost that personal best performance. For me, an excellent
:06:40. > :06:43.start from Kat. Look at lane nine. Schafer alongside Johnson-Thompson
:06:44. > :06:49.Branwell. Ikauniece-Admidina was going well and then it went wrong in
:06:50. > :07:00.the second half. She was fading badly. Ikauniece-Admidina is a 13.07
:07:01. > :07:05.runner. She has lost huge points. Seemed to be struggling with a leg
:07:06. > :07:10.problem. That was pretty evident because she had zero power at the
:07:11. > :07:14.back end of the race. If there's anywhere you need to be technically
:07:15. > :07:22.efficient, it's the back end. From Kat. -- great from Kat. Let's have a
:07:23. > :07:36.look at the standings. The names to look out for, Katarina
:07:37. > :07:41.Johnson-Thompson, Carolin Schafer, a decent run and she may be a medal
:07:42. > :07:48.contender. Nafi Thiam, a couple of tenths down on her personal best.
:07:49. > :07:54.Ikauniece-Admidina battling through injury. I'm sure the Latvian would
:07:55. > :07:58.have featured, but a poor start for her.
:07:59. > :08:04.(STUDIO) you always want to come out and post a PB, like you did, Jess,
:08:05. > :08:08.in 2012. If you don't do that, getting as close as Kat did and
:08:09. > :08:14.putting yourself amongst it, will she be pleased with that? Or a
:08:15. > :08:19.little bit disappointed? She takes seven strides to the first hurdle.
:08:20. > :08:25.She compresses herself in the blocks and she can't unfold. The angle on
:08:26. > :08:28.the front leg forces her to stand straight up. Put your blocks in the
:08:29. > :08:35.right place and you run a personal best. When she gets to the hurdles,
:08:36. > :08:42.chief or Leeds and is very floppy so she's very close. Very simple tidy
:08:43. > :08:50.up. Lead with your knee and you can run and sprint between them and you
:08:51. > :08:55.can break 13 seconds. She is 6-foot. Like Thiam, getting the cadence into
:08:56. > :09:02.the first hurdle is difficult. When you're doing it in seven strides,
:09:03. > :09:09.she has to push really hard. It's counterintuitive. She's crowding the
:09:10. > :09:14.line in order to make seven steps. You fold your legs up. It's like
:09:15. > :09:19.doing a very deep squat and trying to stand up. You have to have a 90
:09:20. > :09:26.degrees angle in the front leg and 120 in the back otherwise you can't
:09:27. > :09:34.power out. Let's have a look at the overhead camera and see if we can
:09:35. > :09:40.get any more from that. Lane nine, she looks like she might be carrying
:09:41. > :09:46.an injury. Yeah. She got out well but she hit the seventh hurdle.
:09:47. > :09:50.Fifth hurdle. I don't know whether she's coming into the competition
:09:51. > :09:57.with an injury, but she looks like she's grabbed her hamstring off the
:09:58. > :10:03.hurdle. That doesn't bode well. No. A poor start for an athlete we
:10:04. > :10:08.thought would be in the mix. The one who is the lady everybody wants to
:10:09. > :10:14.beat, Nafi Thiam, didn't have the best start either. Let's have a look
:10:15. > :10:21.at her. Tell us what you thought of her performance, Tony. A very tall
:10:22. > :10:31.individual. She takes eight strides to the first hurdle. Look how her
:10:32. > :10:36.knee is bent. She keeps it tight. I don't like the lead arm, goes across
:10:37. > :10:41.her, throws it out a little bit which creates rotation you don't
:10:42. > :10:46.want. She has to fit into the space. She bends the knee, she cuts the
:10:47. > :10:55.distance. Not active enough off the trail leg. She's dropped 30 points
:10:56. > :10:58.but then Kat instead of moving towards her and taking benefit, she
:10:59. > :11:04.stepped away a little bit, but not by much. The bigger problem will be
:11:05. > :11:11.for the Latvian girl. She's 80 points down. It means she's more
:11:12. > :11:15.likely to score 6700 and Kat can probably achieve that. As you step
:11:16. > :11:21.towards them, there's a chance to be on the podium. It's the high jump
:11:22. > :11:27.next and that's where she is world class and she can post a big score.
:11:28. > :11:30.The high jump is always interesting. They're jumping ability is
:11:31. > :11:36.incredible. Watching them battle it out is brilliant. They will need to
:11:37. > :11:41.jump in the high 90s. She will feel pressure because she has to deliver.
:11:42. > :11:45.She wants to start with a PB but she hasn't done that. She will come out
:11:46. > :11:54.and jump high and she will want to get close to two metres. That's at
:11:55. > :11:59.11:30am. We will be all over it. Back on the track now. The 400
:12:00. > :12:02.metres hurdles... Sorry, the 400 metres flat. They would be very
:12:03. > :12:10.shocked if there were hurdles out there! Olympic finalist, a really
:12:11. > :12:15.exciting athlete. Still only 22 years old. He's gained so much
:12:16. > :12:19.experience over the last few years. In Glasgow as the Commonwealth Games
:12:20. > :12:25.we got a glimpse of him first and 40 was exciting. Lovely runner,
:12:26. > :12:35.relaxed, gaining confidence. He's had stress fractures, but nice to
:12:36. > :12:38.see him back strong and confident. He seems to enjoy the big occasions.
:12:39. > :12:39.Can he deliver in front of the home crowd and get safely through Steve
:12:40. > :12:50.Cram is the commentator. What a great morning we've got
:12:51. > :12:54.because these 400 metres heats will be very exciting. Matthew
:12:55. > :13:00.Hudson-Smith getting is underway. Dwayne Campbell in heat three and
:13:01. > :13:04.Martyn Rooney in heat five. Wayde Van Niekerk, the favourite, world
:13:05. > :13:10.record holder, is in the second heat. There are also other big names
:13:11. > :13:15.to watch out for. Fred Kerley of the USA, really exciting to watch him
:13:16. > :13:26.run here in his first major championships. Big talent.
:13:27. > :13:35.Some familiar names to those of you who are regular athletics fans.
:13:36. > :13:40.Particularly in the outside lanes. The qualification is not easy. First
:13:41. > :13:46.three and six fastest through to the semifinals which are tomorrow.
:13:47. > :13:49.Matthew Hudson-Smith has shown in his burgeoning career that he is
:13:50. > :13:55.good at raising his game at the major championships. His last
:13:56. > :13:59.performance here was an odd one, the London Diamond League. A couple of
:14:00. > :14:10.weeks ago. He fell over at the start. That was the night for him to
:14:11. > :14:15.put in a good confidence building performance before these
:14:16. > :14:22.championships. He missed that opportunity. Maslak on the outside.
:14:23. > :14:30.He will be a good one for them all to chase. He was in the world record
:14:31. > :14:38.race recently. There's Fred Kerley. He's a massive talent. He's just 22
:14:39. > :14:44.years of age. Haven't seen him on the international circuit really and
:14:45. > :14:49.this is a baptism of fire for him. Kevin Borlee, 29 years old,
:14:50. > :14:58.extremely experienced. Hudson-Smith in five. A huge cheer for the
:14:59. > :15:09.Brummie lad. All of the danger for him is outside. Might need to watch
:15:10. > :15:10.the Kenyan in lane two as well. He's run close to 45 seconds this year,
:15:11. > :15:28.there he years. On times, he should finish in the
:15:29. > :15:32.top three here. I will be interested to see Gordon as well. Coming back
:15:33. > :15:43.to the sort of form that saw him win medals a few years back. He ran a
:15:44. > :15:47.31.923 200 metres recently, and as the fastest he's ever done. It might
:15:48. > :15:56.indicate he's ready to drop under 45 seconds again.
:15:57. > :16:05.Only three of them will go through...
:16:06. > :16:11.Hudson-Smith has got to get on terms with those men outside him. Fred
:16:12. > :16:17.Kerley starting quickly. Hudson-Smith already going past
:16:18. > :16:24.Kevin Borlee who has started quickly through the first 150. Maslak going
:16:25. > :16:32.well. The three of them moving away, Fred Kerley but in a gap between
:16:33. > :16:38.himself and Borlee and Hudson-Smith. Already looking around, a bit of
:16:39. > :16:45.bravado. He says, watch me go, it's easy for me. It looks easy.
:16:46. > :16:50.Hudson-Smith going well, but Borlee and Maslak, this is tough. Fred
:16:51. > :16:55.Kerley will win it, Hudson-Smith fading quickly, fifth. That is a
:16:56. > :17:00.tough, tough heat, but I didn't like the way Hudson-Smith eased back. I'm
:17:01. > :17:06.not saying he eased back, but didn't fight enough in the 1015 metres.
:17:07. > :17:10.There are six fastest loser spots. If you are not in the top three you
:17:11. > :17:15.have to keep going for the time. Fifth place, but the last 15 metres
:17:16. > :17:26.might well have cost him. It's very close. Hudson-Smith, 45.31. Fred
:17:27. > :17:29.Kerley, that was impressive and Michael Johnson sitting upstairs
:17:30. > :17:36.must have been purring. He's a real talent. I didn't like this, really.
:17:37. > :17:40.Just run the race, get on with it. You can relax without having to look
:17:41. > :17:45.around. Not sure what that was about, throwing out his hands. This
:17:46. > :17:49.is a serious business, this is the preliminaries and he's a young
:17:50. > :17:54.athlete and he will learn. I also agree on Matthew Hudson-Smith. You
:17:55. > :17:56.have to fight, and he's giving up way too early. Especially in the
:17:57. > :18:00.early rounds where you have to acquit yourself really well. Fred
:18:01. > :18:06.Kerley not making too much ground, not taking a gap out of him, running
:18:07. > :18:11.well in the first 200 metres, impressive and relaxed. In the early
:18:12. > :18:15.rounds you want to run quickly through the first 200, get your
:18:16. > :18:20.rhythm down and then come off the turn exactly where you want to be in
:18:21. > :18:26.the race, among the leaders, which is where he was initially and then
:18:27. > :18:31.started to fade. This is where he relaxed a bit too much. In a great
:18:32. > :18:36.position and then his arms drop down, a little too much relaxation.
:18:37. > :18:38.Borlee coming up on the outside, you have to respond to that and he
:18:39. > :18:46.didn't do that. It was a missed opportunity. He's going to have an
:18:47. > :18:51.anxious wait because there are now five more heats to come, and he's
:18:52. > :18:59.not even a fastest loser, the second fastest, because was ahead of him.
:19:00. > :19:03.At the Olympics, 45.31 wouldn't have got you through is the fastest
:19:04. > :19:09.loser. We have some high quality races to come and he will have an
:19:10. > :19:16.anxious wait. Back to the hammer, Steve. The hammer with Sophie
:19:17. > :19:27.Hitchon, a big cheer as she entered the stadium. Qualifying time for the
:19:28. > :19:30.athletes to go 71.5 or top 12. Sophie Hitchon has proved time and
:19:31. > :19:35.time again that she is a major championship challenger. Olympic
:19:36. > :19:38.bronze last year, fourth in the World Championships two years ago
:19:39. > :19:45.and lifetime bests on both those occasions. Looking for something in
:19:46. > :19:50.excess of 71.5. It's looking good, down the middle. She controlled
:19:51. > :19:53.herself. A big cheer from the crowd because Sophie Hitchon makes another
:19:54. > :19:57.major championships final. That looked easy and it bodes really well
:19:58. > :20:03.for her prospects of standing on another global rostrum. Loved the
:20:04. > :20:09.moment last season when she threw a British record in the last round at
:20:10. > :20:19.Rio. And that is the perfect start to her World Championships. A big
:20:20. > :20:24.smile from Sophie, into the final. 73.05, the best of the athletes so
:20:25. > :20:29.far. Matthew Hudson-Smith in that race the way he wanted, not just in
:20:30. > :20:35.terms of position. He knows it, the last 50 metres not helping his cause
:20:36. > :20:44.of advancing. 45.31, confirmed in fifth. Gordon is ready to improve, a
:20:45. > :20:51.season's best for him. Maslak with a season's best. Hudson-Smith, 45.31,
:20:52. > :21:02.and five races still to come. Not what you wanted, I'm sure.
:21:03. > :21:07.Describe the race from your perspective. Got out really well but
:21:08. > :21:11.couldn't find the extra gear. It's strange when these things happen but
:21:12. > :21:15.we have to move on and hopefully I get through. It's an anxious waiting
:21:16. > :21:23.game. Are you thinking back to anything you would have done
:21:24. > :21:26.differently? I would have probably settled better, personally. These
:21:27. > :21:31.things happen and you have to move on from it. You have shown is in
:21:32. > :21:36.your young career how you can move on from round to rant. This is a new
:21:37. > :21:40.experience, not getting through automatically. Definitely, but I
:21:41. > :21:47.just have to learn from it and carry on. It's a waiting game, as you
:21:48. > :21:53.said. All the best. Sophie Hitchon with her tracksuit back on. She's in
:21:54. > :21:57.the final on Monday. Not a perfect throw, good enough to get through,
:21:58. > :22:07.but there are technical improvements to be made and something around 74
:22:08. > :22:11.metres might get on the rostrum. A good start from Sophie Hitchon.
:22:12. > :22:15.Automatic qualifying. She can leave the arena. The other athletes can
:22:16. > :22:24.continue. Three throws maximum. But the perfect start for Sophie.
:22:25. > :22:30.The Olympic champion and world record-holder is ready to begin his
:22:31. > :22:35.400-metre campaign. One of two events he's going for here, Wayde
:22:36. > :22:39.van Niekerk, going for the 400 metre and 200-metre double. The Michael
:22:40. > :22:49.Johnson speciality. And he Johnson's record in the Olympics, stretching
:22:50. > :22:54.clear of LaShawn Merritt and James in the final 50 metres. People
:22:55. > :23:01.believe he can go below 43 seconds. That's a bit of a stretch, but he's
:23:02. > :23:05.an outstanding, incredible athlete. This should be a little bit of a job
:23:06. > :23:11.for him. Again, a high-quality field. Steven Solomon, Nery Brenes
:23:12. > :23:21.from Costa Rica, world indoor champion from 2012. Shearman St
:23:22. > :23:26.Vincent the Grenadines. Van Niekerk say he can take on Usain Bolt's
:23:27. > :23:30.mantel. He's a different character, a much more quiet figure, no
:23:31. > :23:45.showman, but on the track is comparable. Outstanding 100, 200 and
:23:46. > :23:52.400 runner. Cedenio, running 44.01, nobody has run that fast before and
:23:53. > :24:05.not got a medal. Still only 21. De Vita ray of Italy in lane two. And
:24:06. > :24:16.Janezic of Slovenia in lane one. -- Davide
:24:17. > :24:27.Re. One of the great athletes, Wayde van Niekerk. Looking at times, the
:24:28. > :24:32.first heat was quick, Matthew Hudson-Smith down in fifth with
:24:33. > :24:42.45.31. Wayde van Niekerk should be able to win this at his leisure.
:24:43. > :24:57.There is a long hold. Asked to stand up. Just a little bit unsettling.
:24:58. > :25:02.Wayde van Niekerk, he has won a couple of Diamond League meetings
:25:03. > :25:12.this year. 43.62 in Lausanne to win that one. And also in Monaco where
:25:13. > :25:23.he was pushed quite hard. Could the athlete in lane for please respond
:25:24. > :25:35.immediately to my set command. Atine-Venel of France, quite slow to
:25:36. > :25:57.follow the set command. The Marshall speaking to them.
:25:58. > :26:03.A second first-round heat in the men's 400 metres, three going
:26:04. > :26:10.through automatically and on the six fastest losers. Wayde van Niekerk
:26:11. > :26:14.taking it easy through the first hundred, just measuring himself at
:26:15. > :26:19.the moment. He wants to push up a little bit. The man outside him,
:26:20. > :26:28.less KCom it's quite easy at the moment. Van Niekerk leading. Three
:26:29. > :26:33.to go through automatically and Van Niekerk jogging, looking easy and
:26:34. > :26:40.comfortable just now. Solomon also looking strong, the youngster
:26:41. > :26:46.outside, beginning to fade. Van Niekerk takes it again, coasting
:26:47. > :26:54.across. 45.28, not as fast as the first heat. Van Niekerk taking the
:26:55. > :26:59.victory. Matthew Hudson-Smith, 45.31 in fifth in the first heat, easy
:27:00. > :27:03.enough for Van Niekerk. Michael Johnson, was never going to be a
:27:04. > :27:09.repeat of the final in Rio, but that was about energy conservation and
:27:10. > :27:13.stretching the legs for Van Niekerk. That's not the way you want to do
:27:14. > :27:17.it, it takes a lot more energy to relax in the first half of the race
:27:18. > :27:21.and then have to find yourself with 100 metres to go, making up ground
:27:22. > :27:25.and having to kick up into another gear. The better way to do it is to
:27:26. > :27:31.get out, take the lead and then ease back and relax. He has to kick in
:27:32. > :27:35.and that takes a lot of energy. He is trying to conserve energy because
:27:36. > :27:42.he is doing the 400 and 200-metre double. But he is in great shape and
:27:43. > :27:46.the class of the field. No problems for him in this qualification to get
:27:47. > :27:51.through to the next round. Starting off a bit too timid. Even though
:27:52. > :27:56.this is an early round only want to relax, you still want to get out and
:27:57. > :28:01.run the first 200 metres as if it's the final. Getting in to that
:28:02. > :28:06.beautiful long stride, he knows he's the class of the field, very
:28:07. > :28:11.relaxed. This will be a very interesting 400 metres with Van
:28:12. > :28:14.Niekerk as the world-record holder, defending world champion and Olympic
:28:15. > :28:18.champion, trying to do the double. But Fred Kerley in the earlier
:28:19. > :28:23.round, he will have something to say about that. Extremely relaxed,
:28:24. > :28:34.having to kick in a little bit, but not too much of a problem. Just a
:28:35. > :28:38.fantastic athletes, looking to do something special here in these
:28:39. > :28:43.championships over 200 and 400 metres double. Wayde van Niekerk is
:28:44. > :28:47.true. But a reminder it was a much slower heat than the first one,
:28:48. > :28:53.where we saw Matthew Hudson-Smith. Comfortable for Van Niekerk. Nery
:28:54. > :29:01.Brenes went through as well. Good run from the Italian, Re. Much less
:29:02. > :29:05.fancied than the likes of Cedenio, who will have to wait and see if
:29:06. > :29:13.he's one of the fastest losers. Sophie Hitchon is still the
:29:14. > :29:22.qualifier from the women's hammer. This is the Belarus athlete, a world
:29:23. > :29:32.best this year, and she is capable of joining Sophie. It looked high
:29:33. > :29:50.and long. Sophie Hitchon at 73.05, still the leading mark. A similar
:29:51. > :29:56.distance from Malyshik. Second best so far and also qualifying. Another
:29:57. > :30:22.young athletes, the 22-year-old Polish, Malwina Kopron. Can she join
:30:23. > :30:28.Sophie and Malyshik. We have lost that one. The throw is making the
:30:29. > :30:31.most of what very good athletic conditions in the Olympic Stadium.
:30:32. > :30:42.That's probably the best we have seen so far. Close to a lifetime
:30:43. > :30:51.best. 75.11, her lifetime best. 73.50 to book a place in the final.
:30:52. > :30:52.The marks are scratched, 74.97. Three athletes qualifying, Sophie is
:30:53. > :31:03.one of them. The congratulations on a tremendous
:31:04. > :31:09.performance. When you come into qualification it must be tricky, you
:31:10. > :31:13.need to negotiate it and you've done it with aplomb. It is really
:31:14. > :31:17.difficult to come into the qualification rounds. Once you're
:31:18. > :31:22.through, as is a little bit more like a normal competition. It's nice
:31:23. > :31:28.to make it in one throw but you just need to make it. Tim Neila it with
:31:29. > :31:37.an impressive throw shows the form you're in. -- to nail it. We'll see
:31:38. > :31:40.on Monday night! As for being in this stadium, does that give you a
:31:41. > :31:48.lift or are you trying to block it out? I'm not going to lie, it does
:31:49. > :31:51.make you really nervous. You have pressure on yourself and everyone
:31:52. > :31:57.else is here to support you so you want to perform well. But the crowd
:31:58. > :32:01.is amazing. You showed last year in Rio that you fight to the end and
:32:02. > :32:07.you can pull it out of the bag when you most need to so you can tap into
:32:08. > :32:12.those memories. Definitely. Once the final comes, you try to execute your
:32:13. > :32:16.technique. Don't do anything fancy, just come in and execute. Great
:32:17. > :32:22.start, we wish you well for the final. Thanks.
:32:23. > :32:33.Good luck to Sophie Hitchon. And good luck to this man. Dwayne Cowan.
:32:34. > :32:39.What a story for him, 32 years old. This is one of the contenders for a
:32:40. > :32:46.medal, Baboloki Thebe. Young man from Botswana. They have a great
:32:47. > :32:52.relay team as well. Their slowest guy is 45.30 individual. Wayne,
:32:53. > :32:57.incredible story. His father is Lloyd Coward, one of the top
:32:58. > :33:01.coaches, coach of Christine Ohuruogu and others. Dwayne has been getting
:33:02. > :33:07.better and better at a stage of his career where that wouldn't happen to
:33:08. > :33:12.most, at 32. He's had a great season, including a surprise win in
:33:13. > :33:16.the European Team Championships. He set a new personal best on this
:33:17. > :33:24.track at the London Diamond League. He has a tough heat. If he runs like
:33:25. > :33:34.that, he has a good chance. Demish Gaye there has had a few problems,
:33:35. > :33:40.four weeks without racing. Feed -- CD from Botswana.
:33:41. > :33:54.Demish Gaye has only lost one 400-metre race this year.
:33:55. > :34:02.Coward and has started pretty quickly. The crowd really getting
:34:03. > :34:10.into this and he's going well. He's chasing down Thebe. Demish Gaye is
:34:11. > :34:17.quick. Demish Gaye has gone very hard through the first 250. Dwayne
:34:18. > :34:25.Cowan has a real job on his hand but he's a strong finisher. Thebe...
:34:26. > :34:39.Here comes Coward and... Dwayne Cowan. He is going to qualify.
:34:40. > :34:46.44.83. This young man, he started the season with 4409 in his first
:34:47. > :34:51.race in March. He's been incredibly consistent since. He's a big talent.
:34:52. > :34:59.The Jamaicans have some good young 400-metre runners as well. At the
:35:00. > :35:05.other end of the scale, 32. His first major championships and he's
:35:06. > :35:12.through to the semifinal. 45.39 to do that. A smart race, Michael. It
:35:13. > :35:16.was a smart race. He got out quickly and settled in a bit. Not the
:35:17. > :35:25.cleanest of techniques but looks like he's lingering, but that's just
:35:26. > :35:30.the way he runs. Nice, long stride and he looks nice and relaxed which
:35:31. > :35:35.I really like. Now you have to take a break at some point in the 400
:35:36. > :35:45.metres, you can't drop it all out. He does that from 200 to 250. He
:35:46. > :35:49.finds himself in about fourth place, third place, coming off the bend.
:35:50. > :35:54.Decent position. He acquitted himself very well and has done just
:35:55. > :36:00.well enough to get third position for automatic qualification. That's
:36:01. > :36:05.the way you want to run the first round. Everybody wants to relax, you
:36:06. > :36:08.want to conserve as much energy as possible over these three rounds if
:36:09. > :36:14.you're fortunate to get into the final. It's better to run too fast
:36:15. > :36:18.in the first round than not fast enough. That's what Matthew
:36:19. > :36:24.Hudson-Smith is dealing with now. Waiting to see if he will get into
:36:25. > :36:32.the final. Cowan, great first run to get into the semifinal. Semifinals
:36:33. > :36:36.tomorrow. As far as Matthew Hudson-Smith is concerned, he's
:36:37. > :36:43.still in a good position as far as fastest losers. The second and third
:36:44. > :36:49.heats were not particularly quick. Thebe and Gaye looked very strong.
:36:50. > :36:55.Both under 45 seconds. Dwayne is through to the semifinals. He is
:36:56. > :36:59.with Phil. Well done. Such a big occasion and
:37:00. > :37:04.to accomplish that performance in the first round must be greatly
:37:05. > :37:10.satisfying. Yeah. Got through to the semifinals. I took three weeks off
:37:11. > :37:14.so one a bit rusty. Hopefully next round I'll go out a bit harder and
:37:15. > :37:19.get a faster time. Tell me about your year to get to this point.
:37:20. > :37:25.Somebody at your edge -- age to be getting better is a rare thing. I
:37:26. > :37:35.started at 28 years old. I'm still young. In terms of... Yeah. To
:37:36. > :37:43.everyone out there, never give up. I'm 32 years old. I'm training with
:37:44. > :37:50.people of 19 and 20 and you just have to grind it. Impressive. What
:37:51. > :37:55.can you achieve? You were close to your personal best. That's a box
:37:56. > :38:01.you'd like to take. Hopefully I'll get a PB in the semifinals and
:38:02. > :38:05.that's it. My whole aim was to get through the first round. I've done
:38:06. > :38:16.that, just about. Onto the semifinals. Well done. Thanks.
:38:17. > :38:23.Women's triple jump qualification under way and a flamboyant
:38:24. > :38:30.character, you Lamah Ross Hussey from Venezuela. Silver-medallist in
:38:31. > :38:39.Rio last year. Has gone over 15 metres this year. -- just shy of it
:38:40. > :38:48.this year. It is qualification. 14.20 better to get into Monday's
:38:49. > :38:56.final. Ten one expected to do that comfortably. -- Rojas expected to do
:38:57. > :39:05.that comfortably. Shy of auto qualifying. After giving her the big
:39:06. > :39:14.build-up! Rojas with a tentative start. Checked herself on the board.
:39:15. > :39:17.Looks bang on 14 metres. Way off the optimum of getting onto the take-off
:39:18. > :39:27.board. Tony, what did you make of that? I think she'd decelerated.
:39:28. > :39:37.Didn't drive and made it short. A bit of mourning rust I suspect.
:39:38. > :39:46.Rybarikova, bronze medal last year. Champion here five years ago. She
:39:47. > :39:52.will feel at home. 32-year-old from Kazakhstan. Looking to get over
:39:53. > :39:57.14.20. It's a statement to other athletes if you can get auto
:39:58. > :40:07.qualifying, you can walk away. Easily beyond. That was better. She
:40:08. > :40:16.ran so much better on the runway. I'm having it. She really committed
:40:17. > :40:21.herself. Good speed. And then worked the three phases. Straightforward
:40:22. > :40:29.qualifying, no messing about. Kept her speedwell through the phases.
:40:30. > :40:37.Good, textbook triple jumping. The best jump of the qualification
:40:38. > :40:42.process so far. Auto qualifying with 14.57. This is the vehicle that will
:40:43. > :40:49.return the various implements in the throwing competitions. Save the legs
:40:50. > :40:55.of the throwers. Here is another field event that happened earlier.
:40:56. > :41:10.Men's shot put qualification. Tomas Walsh, 22.14, a seasoned's best. The
:41:11. > :41:11.Americans a little off-colour. Joe Kovacs didn't look anywhere near his
:41:12. > :41:27.best. Youth is the order of the day.
:41:28. > :41:33.Steven Gardiner, 21. Steven Gayle. Just sneaked below 45 seconds this
:41:34. > :41:41.season. Good run by Demish Gaye, his team-mate, in the previous heat.
:41:42. > :41:48.Wilbur Le the third. -- Wilbert London the third. Third place at the
:41:49. > :41:51.US Championships. That was behind Fred Kerley and Gil Roberts. We fly
:41:52. > :42:08.past the Irish Champion! We have Santas, silver-medallist at
:42:09. > :42:15.the Olympics five years ago at 18. Jonathan Borlee in lane nine. The
:42:16. > :42:24.fourth of six first-round heats in the men's 400 metres. London, world
:42:25. > :42:36.junior silver-medallist last year. 19. 44.47. He's got Steven Gayle and
:42:37. > :42:37.Steven Gardiner outside him. Gardiner is an outstanding talent
:42:38. > :42:52.from the Bahamas. Away they go. Three to go through
:42:53. > :42:57.automatically. The first heat in which Matthew Hudson-Smith went is
:42:58. > :43:02.still comfortably the fastest. A strong start from Steven Gardiner,
:43:03. > :43:10.the tall figure in lane seven. He eases past Sam Cross outside him. --
:43:11. > :43:19.Santon. Steven Gayle trying to keep pace. Steven Gardiner striding
:43:20. > :43:30.clear, a long way clear of the rest. Looking to shut it down a little
:43:31. > :43:34.bit. London finishing strongly. Gardiner eases across the line.
:43:35. > :43:40.Brian Deegan takes the third automatic qualifying place. Very
:43:41. > :43:45.good run from the Irish Champion. Steven Gardiner, the contrast with
:43:46. > :43:50.Wayde Van Niekerk. He went out hard and eased down, which is perhaps the
:43:51. > :43:55.more sensible way to do things. Impressive. London finished strongly
:43:56. > :44:03.as well and Brian Deegan through. -- Gregan. We've known him for a while,
:44:04. > :44:09.Gardiner. A young and talented athlete and he ran a sensible race.
:44:10. > :44:12.You want to go out hard in the opening 200 and put pressure on,
:44:13. > :44:22.ensure you are in position with 100 to go. Impressive run also by
:44:23. > :44:30.London, the 19-year-old American coached by my coach, Clive Hart.
:44:31. > :44:34.Putting himself in second position. Very, very nice by Gardiner.
:44:35. > :44:40.Relaxing. That will allow him to go into the semifinal with a great
:44:41. > :44:45.position, a lot of confidence. Very slight and slim, but a long stride.
:44:46. > :44:51.Gets into his running. You want to get up to full speed as fast as
:44:52. > :44:57.possible. Nice and relaxed down the back stretch. Beautiful stride, very
:44:58. > :45:01.efficient. We saw him a couple of years ago and thought this could be
:45:02. > :45:06.a 400 metres star of the future and he's putting himself in position
:45:07. > :45:12.this year to be a potential medallist. Exactly what you want,
:45:13. > :45:17.coming off with 100 to go, able to continue to keep everything in line.
:45:18. > :45:22.We seen athletes over the past get a little ragged at the end, but he is
:45:23. > :45:27.able to hold position, hold his technique. It's the most efficient
:45:28. > :45:31.way to cover the last, difficult 20 to 30 to 40 metres. He did it very,
:45:32. > :45:41.very well. The quickest qualifier so far. The
:45:42. > :45:49.first 100 metres was extraordinary. Santos finished strongly but in 5th
:45:50. > :45:53.place. Gardiner, London and Gregan taking the third automatic
:45:54. > :45:57.qualifying place, great bun by Brian Gregan. -- great run.
:45:58. > :46:10.Here is an athlete who has dominated this event over the last decade or
:46:11. > :46:14.so, Caterine Ibarguen of Colombia. In 17 she's been off to get to
:46:15. > :46:22.Monday's final. Just shy of that auto qualifying.
:46:23. > :46:28.15-metre plus jumper when she gets it right. 14. 86 her best so far
:46:29. > :46:35.this season. Making sure on the board. That's wise, but just looking
:46:36. > :46:41.at that line, it's got to go out beyond 14. 20. Collapsed a little in
:46:42. > :46:50.that second phase. Had to salvage it somewhat, lost distance through
:46:51. > :46:57.that. Kimberley Williams.
:46:58. > :47:03.28 years of age, 6th and 7th of the last two Olympic games so is a
:47:04. > :47:08.contender. Fast on the approach. Just shy of 14 metres there.
:47:09. > :47:12.A decent jump for the Jamaican. Reaching out a little on the runway,
:47:13. > :47:17.reaching for the board and her hips are slightly behind her foot and
:47:18. > :47:21.doesn't carry it over. Collapses on that second phase. Gets a lift.
:47:22. > :47:24.That's where she loses speed. You would hope she sorts that out and
:47:25. > :47:29.should get qualifying. A little bit to spare on the board. Athletes
:47:30. > :47:33.making sure, a slight headwind maybe on that back straight running in the
:47:34. > :47:34.opposite direction to the sprinters. In 4th place, just shy of auto
:47:35. > :47:47.qualifying. Things are looking good for Matthew
:47:48. > :47:51.Hudson-Smith at the moment. He was 5th in that first heat but so far
:47:52. > :48:07.his time is looking solid to go through to the semifinal. What about
:48:08. > :48:15.Martin Rooney, he is in lane eight. Merritt outside him. One or two
:48:16. > :48:30.youngsters in lane two. Renny Quow, and Winston George in
:48:31. > :48:38.lane one, half a second quicker than Rooney. So let's just say it isn't
:48:39. > :48:44.going to be easy! Rooney has had problems and was due
:48:45. > :48:48.to run earlier but picked up an injury in training before that race
:48:49. > :48:53.and then has had a curtailed season. Only 5th in the British
:48:54. > :48:57.championships. Merritt had the luxury of not having to go through
:48:58. > :49:03.the American cut-throat system because he is the Diamond League
:49:04. > :49:08.champion from 2016 and therefore got a bye into these championships.
:49:09. > :49:12.Countries can have four athletes, if we haven't mentioned that already,
:49:13. > :49:14.as well as three qualifying, any Diamond League champions or
:49:15. > :49:18.defending world champions but you can't have five, if you had for
:49:19. > :49:20.instance a defending world champion and a Diamond League champion,
:49:21. > :49:27.separate athletes, you would have to choose between them as I think Kenya
:49:28. > :49:32.had to do. So, tough for Rooney here. And this
:49:33. > :49:37.may well be as much as anything getting him a run out, obviously we
:49:38. > :49:44.are hoping a relay team can do well. It's going to be tough. I have
:49:45. > :49:45.already mentioned Botswana, the USA will be very strong as ever. Here is
:49:46. > :50:15.the full line-up. He ran the 200 in the heats in the
:50:16. > :50:21.American championships, Merritt and was very quick this year, as well at
:50:22. > :50:26.200 metres, or his personal best. Rooney trying to get the crowd in,
:50:27. > :50:33.he knows the task is a huge one for him. But can he find some of his old
:50:34. > :50:40.form with those weeks he missed, he may be able to catch up. Quow, back
:50:41. > :50:53.to Berlin in 2009, a surprise bronze medal for him then. And Makwala, he
:50:54. > :51:04.is running superbly quick at 200. A real character.
:51:05. > :51:11.Husillos will be a contender. And Raymond Kibet, winner of the Kenyan
:51:12. > :51:17.trials. And we saw Walton. We have gone past him, but 44. 99, most of
:51:18. > :51:25.his other times have been more like 46. I think one 45 and then won the
:51:26. > :51:29.junior championships in Peru. So, has he got a performance like that
:51:30. > :51:37.in his legs? He is in lane two. Rooney is in lane eight.
:51:38. > :51:40.Expect this to be Makwala and Merritt and a real tussle after
:51:41. > :51:49.that. Top three through to the semis.
:51:50. > :51:59.At the moment 45. 7 will get you a fastest loser spot.
:52:00. > :52:03.So the crowd will do their best. Lane two Walton has gone off flying
:52:04. > :52:12.through the first 100 metres, the young 18-year-old. Maybe getting
:52:13. > :52:16.overexcited. Rooney has a reasonably quickly, sometimes he doesn't. The
:52:17. > :52:27.two men on the inside in lanes one and two have to figure in this.
:52:28. > :52:33.George and Walton. But Makwala and Merritt as expected: Young Walton in
:52:34. > :52:41.third place. Merritt struggling a bit. Walton is going to hang on to
:52:42. > :52:53.second. Merit will get second. Rooney may have dipped in for 5th
:52:54. > :53:00.there. But Makwala doesn't hang around. Great race in Monaco
:53:01. > :53:05.recently. Merritt, doesn't know if he thought he might have pushed him
:53:06. > :53:09.more but a smooth run in the end. Rooney, a tough, tough heat for him.
:53:10. > :53:24.Just waiting for the time to come up. Walton is a huge talent.
:53:25. > :53:31.Husillos did get 4thle. I will bring you in, Michael. Makwala, one of the
:53:32. > :53:36.classes of this 400 metres this year, that time is impressive and
:53:37. > :53:39.allows him to be able to do this, run that first 200 metres very
:53:40. > :53:46.quickly and doesn't take as much out of him as it does the competitors.
:53:47. > :53:52.Then just able to relax here. In control of this race around the
:53:53. > :53:58.bend. And finish with a very impressive early stage 44. 56. To
:53:59. > :54:03.your point, Steve, Walton over there on the inside, the youngster from
:54:04. > :54:05.Kay man Islands, very -- Cayman Islands, impressed with his race
:54:06. > :54:09.here, recognising athletes on his outside were not running very fast
:54:10. > :54:13.so it looked like he may have gone out too quickly but he actually put
:54:14. > :54:18.himself in a great position to finish this race as an automatic
:54:19. > :54:20.qualifier behind Merritt. Rooney here, this was always going to be
:54:21. > :54:26.tough for him. Didn't get out quickly, needs to get out faster
:54:27. > :54:31.than that. Keeping his eye on Merritt. This was a great position
:54:32. > :54:37.for Rooney to be inside of Merritt, that's one of the race leaders, you
:54:38. > :54:42.knew he was one of the race leaders as world champion and former Olympic
:54:43. > :54:46.champion. With Makwala Rooney allows Merritt to get too far ahead there,
:54:47. > :54:53.loses contact with him. Now trying to come back, which is going to be
:54:54. > :55:00.tough. This is always going to be difficult. You can't allow Merritt
:55:01. > :55:05.to get that far ahead and lose contact with him. If I had seen this
:55:06. > :55:09.lane drawn and I am Martyn Rooney I would have felt this is exactly
:55:10. > :55:13.where I need to be, just inside of someone like Merritt and you draft
:55:14. > :55:18.off him for the first 200 metres and use your strength coming home which
:55:19. > :55:25.he didn't do, which is a missed opportunity. I can tell you despite
:55:26. > :55:32.that good lane draw and trying to follow Merritt, sadly, his time will
:55:33. > :55:39.mean he won't qualify. We still have one more heat.
:55:40. > :55:45.Rooney will not go through to the semifinal. He is with Phil.
:55:46. > :55:52.Martyn, what's the sense of emotion right now, 500ths between you and a
:55:53. > :55:59.place in the next round? I didn't realise it was so close. Well, first
:56:00. > :56:04.of all, disappointed at how I ran. Not great. But I will take
:56:05. > :56:11.opportunities to back my team, it's not been an easy summer or winter,
:56:12. > :56:15.but my wife, my son, all the guys I work with, medical team, and all the
:56:16. > :56:19.people at home who buy lottery tickets, you are part of my team and
:56:20. > :56:22.guys who fund me and support my family, give me the opportunity to
:56:23. > :56:26.represent my country and try to do the best of my ability, thanks to
:56:27. > :56:30.everybody in my team. Even if you don't know me, you bought a ticket,
:56:31. > :56:36.you are a team player. And thank you very much. Talking of team, work
:56:37. > :56:43.isn't done for you because the relay is coming up, you have high hopes
:56:44. > :56:46.for the team. Yeah as a relay runner, we have a great squad. I
:56:47. > :56:54.think Dwayne did well earlier, Matt, he went out a bit hard, hopefully he
:56:55. > :56:59.gets through. But the guys we have back in the training camp, Jack in
:57:00. > :57:05.the hurdles, we have a great squad. And we are here to come away with a
:57:06. > :57:09.medal, make up for Rio and see what happens. Thank you for talking to
:57:10. > :57:14.us, Martyn. Appreciate it. Thank you, Phil.
:57:15. > :57:19.STUDIO: A disappointed Martyn Rooney, would you say, Michael? An
:57:20. > :57:22.interesting post-race reaction. I don't know if it's disappointed
:57:23. > :57:25.enough. You have to reflect on your performance. As opposed to, you
:57:26. > :57:28.know, the team that supported you and all of that. That's fantastic.
:57:29. > :57:32.That's great. There is a time for that. But right now, you know,
:57:33. > :57:36.talking about all those people who supported and all those people who
:57:37. > :57:40.bought a ticket, you owe them an explanation as to why you didn't
:57:41. > :57:43.execute the way you should have and at 30 years old and with his
:57:44. > :57:45.experience he should know how to execute at this point and take
:57:46. > :57:49.advantage of the opportunity that he had today. We have heard that far
:57:50. > :57:52.too many times from Martyn Rooney and so, those people who bought a
:57:53. > :57:56.ticket will say, yeah, we heard that before. We are tired of hearing
:57:57. > :58:00.that. Why didn't you do something different today? Bringing it around
:58:01. > :58:04.to the 4x4, trying to throw a positive light and say there will be
:58:05. > :58:10.more to come from him. We shall see. There is more to come from the
:58:11. > :58:11.hepathletes. They started with the hurdles and Katarina
:58:12. > :58:20.Johnson-Thompson impressed with a 13. 33, her second fastest time ever
:58:21. > :58:24.which gives her 1075 points. The pre-event favourite, the champion
:58:25. > :58:29.from Belgium was way down on her best and got 1044, in 11th. It adds
:58:30. > :58:42.up to a really exciting high jump head-to-head. These two were having
:58:43. > :58:47.a great ding-song in Rio last year. She is capable of huge scores here.
:58:48. > :58:50.It's a great event. She will be internally confident but is very
:58:51. > :58:55.much relaxed right now. It's important because she is and is
:58:56. > :59:00.likely to be one of the two athletes left in this competition. It's a
:59:01. > :59:03.long old morning for these guys. Explain the high jump competition
:59:04. > :59:06.rules in terms of when you opt in and out because it's slightly
:59:07. > :59:11.different to a normal high jump competition. The increments go up in
:59:12. > :59:16.three centimetres as opposed to five for the normal competition.
:59:17. > :59:21.Basically, I haven't seen what the bars go through today, but I expect
:59:22. > :59:25.Kat to start to maybe think about coming in at 180. Plus if she's
:59:26. > :59:29.feeling confident and from that point it will show you how confident
:59:30. > :59:36.she is with what she does. It's a great competition. This is where the
:59:37. > :59:40.action starts. If she's not careful she will get trod on there by a
:59:41. > :59:45.cameraman! Looking incredibly relaxed there. The other side of the
:59:46. > :59:49.stadium they're getting ready for heat six of this men's 400 metres.
:59:50. > :00:07.The sky at the moment getting cloudier. But it's still dry.
:00:08. > :00:10.COMMENTATOR: Again three to go through automatically. There is Gil
:00:11. > :00:21.Roberts. Finished second in the US
:00:22. > :00:26.Championships. Sibanda from Botswana, fifth in Europe. 18 years
:00:27. > :00:46.old at the Olympics. They get underway in this last heat,
:00:47. > :00:51.three go through automatically. Hudson-Smith is looking good for a
:00:52. > :01:03.fastest loser place. Nathon Allen is moving up quickly. Gil Roberts
:01:04. > :01:06.making his move. Gil Roberts is a powerful figure with great
:01:07. > :01:20.experience as well. Roberts and Allen. Three go through
:01:21. > :01:31.automatically. These three separate themselves and Roberts starting to
:01:32. > :01:38.look a little bit strained. 44.92. Hamroun of Qatar took the third
:01:39. > :01:49.automatic qualifying place. -- Abdul Osman room. Gil Roberts ran a pretty
:01:50. > :02:01.hard race. There wasn't a huge amount left for Gil Roberts but he
:02:02. > :02:08.did enough to come through. It was a good performance. The one I
:02:09. > :02:12.was watching as well... We'll get Michael back in a second. Sibanda
:02:13. > :02:22.stopped running. Watching in the light blue. He should have been in
:02:23. > :02:25.the battle for the top three but he starts jogging. Botswana are big
:02:26. > :02:31.favourites in the 4x4 so that will be worrying for them. We're going to
:02:32. > :02:36.look at Gil Roberts as well. This was another tough heat. The first
:02:37. > :02:41.heat was tough for Hudson-Smith. When one of them just doesn't run,
:02:42. > :02:49.jogging the last 20 to 30 minutes, almost bizarre. It's been
:02:50. > :02:54.interesting. Gil Roberts went out pretty hard and started to look a
:02:55. > :02:58.bit pained over the last 100 metres. Talking about Sibanda, will have a
:02:59. > :03:04.look at him in a moment. He was so exciting when he came on the scene.
:03:05. > :03:11.Botswana have a very talented crop of athletes, with Nigel Amos as
:03:12. > :03:16.well, the 800 metres runner. Sibanda has had a few struggles this season,
:03:17. > :03:26.he hasn't gone below 45 seconds. He did rather pull up. Very
:03:27. > :03:35.disappointing. Nathon Allen, 21, from Joe Baker -- from Jamaica. He
:03:36. > :03:39.goes below 45 seconds and he'll be challenging for a place in the final
:03:40. > :03:44.and possibly medals beyond that although that might be a stretch. A
:03:45. > :03:57.good victory here in the first round. The last of the six heats.
:03:58. > :04:02.Matthew Hudson-Smith will go through with his 45.31. These are the
:04:03. > :04:14.qualifiers. Botswana with two of the three
:04:15. > :04:25.fastest qualifiers, but a disappointing run from Sibanda.
:04:26. > :04:36.Wayde Van Niekerk will still be the man to beat.
:04:37. > :04:43.(STUDIO) time to reflect on those 400-metre heats and there's no
:04:44. > :04:50.better man than the maestro himself, Michael Johnson. He's itching to go.
:04:51. > :04:55.Taking you back to the first heat. Matthew Hudson-Smith made it
:04:56. > :05:00.through. Olympic finalist. He didn't run like someone with a lot of
:05:01. > :05:04.experience. You weren't impressed by his game management. I wasn't
:05:05. > :05:08.impressed. It's tough for young athletes at the beginning of the
:05:09. > :05:14.championships. He's got a great attitude. Now it's time to get
:05:15. > :05:19.serious, get started. He got a decent start. Kevin Borlee to the
:05:20. > :05:26.outside. Making up ground on BorlAce over 100 metres. He did a very good
:05:27. > :05:36.job of getting up to race pace. He's got his eyes on these guys. Then he
:05:37. > :05:42.starts to lose to little bit just as he gets right here with 100 metres
:05:43. > :05:48.to go. You want to keep your eye on the leaders. You've got to look
:05:49. > :05:52.around and see. You've got the big screens you can look at. You can
:05:53. > :05:57.feel those guys behind you. You've got to react which is what he
:05:58. > :06:08.doesn't do. BorlAce coming up on his shoulder.
:06:09. > :06:13.This is when Matthew Hudson-Smith has to react. You want to err on the
:06:14. > :06:17.side of running too fast in the early rounds rather than too slow.
:06:18. > :06:24.Everybody wants to conserve energy, it's tough, but are on the side of
:06:25. > :06:28.running too fast. Which is what you said about Wayde Van Niekerk. It
:06:29. > :06:32.made me look at everyone else differently. There's no point going
:06:33. > :06:36.out slow and thinking at the end you can take people off. What van
:06:37. > :06:41.Niekerk did wouldn't stand him in as good stead for the next round.
:06:42. > :06:46.Right. You don't want to do that and think you can catch everyone unless
:06:47. > :06:51.you're the world record-holder! It wasn't good race management from
:06:52. > :06:56.him. This will be important for him because he's doubling in the 400 and
:06:57. > :07:02.200. It's a lot of races. When he won his first championship in 2015,
:07:03. > :07:06.they had to take him off the track on a stretcher because he doesn't
:07:07. > :07:12.have great stamina. But he has great speed endurance. He didn't pay
:07:13. > :07:20.attention to the guy on the outside and now he has to react. That takes
:07:21. > :07:24.more energy. He kicks in. It takes a lot of energy, like when you're
:07:25. > :07:31.playing a video game, you've got the power metre. I'm looking at you
:07:32. > :07:38.blank! We don't spend our time in books like you do. His power metre
:07:39. > :07:43.went to zero. But he's a fantastic athlete and he can get away with
:07:44. > :07:47.that. After you said that, I was looking at the athletes we think
:07:48. > :07:52.will make it to the final, but Steven Gardiner looked so relaxed.
:07:53. > :07:58.It looked like he ran a really, really good race. He's a very
:07:59. > :08:03.good-looking runner. He is tall and nice and clean in terms of his
:08:04. > :08:09.technique. We saw him a few years ago, we heard about this guy from
:08:10. > :08:16.the Bahamas, very young, and he ran a very nice race. I expect him to be
:08:17. > :08:20.a medallist. He looked incredibly relaxed. Isaac Makwala didn't make
:08:21. > :08:26.it to the final in Rio. He's the African champion. African 400 metre
:08:27. > :08:32.running is something to behold at the moment. What did you make of
:08:33. > :08:37.him? Fantastic athlete, we've seen him run fast Times at 400 and 200
:08:38. > :08:45.early in the season. He had an incredible event in Madrid this
:08:46. > :08:52.year. He's using that 200 metre speed to get through the first 200
:08:53. > :08:55.metres very quickly. This is how you run an early round in the 400
:08:56. > :09:01.metres. Leave nothing to chance even if you're one of the best in the
:09:02. > :09:06.world. He still pushes around the bend and now he can relax. He's got
:09:07. > :09:12.control of Lashawn Merritt, the former world and Olympic champion to
:09:13. > :09:17.his outside. He's conserving a lot of energy in contrast of van Niekerk
:09:18. > :09:22.because he can basically glide the last 40 to 50 metres. Perfect
:09:23. > :09:28.running. He's made mistakes in the past and it looks like he's aiming
:09:29. > :09:32.to not repeat that. Fred Kerley we looked at earlier with his
:09:33. > :09:37.interesting antics for a first round, to be giving it the come and
:09:38. > :09:42.get me, especially with a man who's not had much international
:09:43. > :09:46.experience. He was very impressive and ran a very good race and he's a
:09:47. > :09:51.fantastic athlete. He's shown himself this year to be a world
:09:52. > :09:55.beater and potentially a medallist. I didn't like the antics and I'm
:09:56. > :10:00.sure his coach will speak to him about that and hopefully we'll see
:10:01. > :10:07.him get it together and take this more seriously. I kind of like it! I
:10:08. > :10:13.know you do. Was the book comment anything to do with me looking like
:10:14. > :10:17.a librarian today? I like it. I was thinking about ripping it off myself
:10:18. > :10:22.but I don't think I could pull it off. Somebody compared me to Doris
:10:23. > :10:27.Day! We have an exciting evening coming up with the men's 100 and 's
:10:28. > :10:33.semifinals and final. There have been more comments on the blocks and
:10:34. > :10:39.they are a bit wobbly and it's affecting peoples starts. That would
:10:40. > :10:43.obviously affect your confidence. You want to push off as hard as you
:10:44. > :10:48.can. If you find it's a bit wobbly and not as stable as you used to, it
:10:49. > :10:53.will affect you. I don't expect it to expect in this evening. I think
:10:54. > :10:57.he will be disappointed in his performance last night, which wasn't
:10:58. > :11:02.just down to the blocks, it was down to how he reacted to the blocks in
:11:03. > :11:07.the race. That's something a veteran doesn't do. You were surprised he
:11:08. > :11:11.even referred to it. Maybe an indication of his temperament. I'm
:11:12. > :11:16.sure he'll be different today. You can see that tonight on BBC One.
:11:17. > :11:32.Let's have a look. The last time you'll see Usain Bolt
:11:33. > :11:41.running it on a major championship final. We started the track with the
:11:42. > :11:47.women's heptathlon 100 hurdles. Katarina Johnson-Thompson posted
:11:48. > :11:52.13.33, which is her second best time ever. She's in sixth position going
:11:53. > :11:59.into her highest -- best event, the high jump. Nafi Thiam was a lot
:12:00. > :12:03.further down on her best time and she's an 11th place going into this
:12:04. > :12:09.say she needs to post a really, really good job. The two of them had
:12:10. > :12:12.a fantastic head-to-head last year in Rio. We'll be with them all the
:12:13. > :12:38.way. Let's look at the standings. We expect to see Schafer pushing for
:12:39. > :12:45.the medals. Down there in 11th place, Thiam. That won't be where
:12:46. > :12:49.she wants to be. Ikauniece-Admidina had a disappointing run and I think
:12:50. > :12:56.Steve Backley has news on her. Is it good news? It's not good news. She's
:12:57. > :13:01.out. She hasn't gone to the second event, the high jump. She pulled up
:13:02. > :13:06.in the sprint hurdles, holding her leg and she's out. That's good news
:13:07. > :13:12.for Kat Johnson-Thompson. One of the main contenders has gone out. Nafi
:13:13. > :13:18.Thiam, as expected, the Olympic champion, is still looking good.
:13:19. > :13:22.Really good news for Kat. Very disappointing for the competition
:13:23. > :13:27.because it's a hotly contested heptathlon, but it's an opportunity
:13:28. > :13:36.for K J T. She's opted out until 1.80 in the high jump. She's one of
:13:37. > :13:42.the best jumpers in the competition. Ikauniece-Admidina, the Latvian, is
:13:43. > :13:45.such a fierce competitor and she's the most progressed athlete in
:13:46. > :13:51.recent times. Bitterly disappointing for her. We suspected something was
:13:52. > :13:55.wrong, her time was well down and she was holding our leg. Our
:13:56. > :13:59.sympathies go to her because all that preparation and hard work and
:14:00. > :14:04.she's out after one event. We'll go back to the high jump is it hots up.
:14:05. > :14:11.Let's go back to the track because it's the women's 100 metres heats.
:14:12. > :14:14.Asha Philip is down there. Listen to her reception.
:14:15. > :14:25.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE. The grand dame of the British
:14:26. > :14:30.women's team. Only 26 but such experience. European indoor
:14:31. > :14:36.champion. A very fast German athlete alongside her. 20 years old. She ran
:14:37. > :14:53.11.01 to win the German title last month.
:14:54. > :15:02.And Ahoure, ran 10. 83 in Florida in June, third quickest time this year.
:15:03. > :15:18.And Naomi Sedney of the Netherlands in lane nine. Lane six we missed
:15:19. > :15:32.Yelena Ryabova: Asha Philip on the inside.
:15:33. > :15:35.Three to go through automatically. First of six heats in the women's
:15:36. > :15:49.100 metres. Great start by Asha Philip. Storming
:15:50. > :15:57.out. Luckenkemper easing through. Philip just run out of the automatic
:15:58. > :16:00.places. 10. 96, the wind a little bit behind but it's legal and
:16:01. > :16:03.Luckenkemper goes below 11 seconds for the first time and that's why we
:16:04. > :16:07.have the smile. That's why she got the victory. Great run by
:16:08. > :16:14.Luckenkemper. Off that start as well, three metres down on Asha
:16:15. > :16:20.Philip early on but came storming through. Ahoure had to work hard, as
:16:21. > :16:26.well, had to do a lot over the second half. But Luckenkemper, the
:16:27. > :16:31.20-year-old, 10. 96. Asha Philip will have to wait to see if she is
:16:32. > :16:37.one of the fastest losers. Asha Philip has run a season's best time,
:16:38. > :16:42.11. 14. A decent run, and look at this start, as well, Colin. You
:16:43. > :16:47.can't ask for much more from Asha than a season's best in this first
:16:48. > :16:54.heat. Explosive start. But what a recovery from the German. First time
:16:55. > :17:02.for her under 11 seconds. You can she how she feels about that. Good
:17:03. > :17:05.wind behind. But look how much she lost on Asha Philip at the
:17:06. > :17:11.beginning. She held it together and kept her focus. It's a good quality
:17:12. > :17:15.field this. All these women's 100s are very high, high standards. Good
:17:16. > :17:23.to see that. A fast race and great time to pull
:17:24. > :17:27.out a season's best. The frustration as well I suppose at the same time?
:17:28. > :17:32.Every time I keep getting that. I am happy with a season's best. I don't
:17:33. > :17:37.think I have had a positive win this whole season. Fingers crossed I do
:17:38. > :17:41.qualify and I am in the semifinal. You didn't get to experience this in
:17:42. > :17:45.2012, unfortunately and now you are here what's it been like? Amazing. I
:17:46. > :17:50.didn't come down last night so I didn't hear the crowd, I could hear
:17:51. > :17:57.it from the warm-up track when they were call the British athletes, OK,
:17:58. > :18:02.totally scared! But I will embrace it, this is my home, I am happy to
:18:03. > :18:07.be here. You were then able to get a season's best when you needed to. I
:18:08. > :18:10.feel I am more of a championship performer, hopefully I run faster
:18:11. > :18:14.and get a positive win maybe. You know what, I am going to take this
:18:15. > :18:17.on the chin and enjoy the moment. Did you feel not only a season's
:18:18. > :18:22.best but a personal best is within you? Definitely, I keep running
:18:23. > :18:24.faster. I am not that far off it, so I feel I actually could. All the
:18:25. > :18:45.best, thank you. Thank you, Phil. COMMENTATOR: Luckenkemper, 10. 95
:18:46. > :18:48.it's been rounded down to, great run from the German.
:18:49. > :18:56.STUDIO: Out now on the track for the next heat, the double Olympic
:18:57. > :19:00.champion from Jamaica, 25-year-old Elaine Thompson, only running the
:19:01. > :19:02.100 metres here in London so you would guess she's going to make it
:19:03. > :19:18.spectacular. Let's hear from her. Elaine Thompson, a brilliant
:19:19. > :19:24.performance from her, the two of them running superbly fast. It was
:19:25. > :19:32.my first championship ever. That was my biggest challenge to actually
:19:33. > :19:38.come away with a silver medal. It was a big international. It was a
:19:39. > :19:42.big success for me. In Rio, you really showed everybody how talented
:19:43. > :19:47.you truly are. I know I was talented but sometimes you don't know how
:19:48. > :19:58.talented you are until you actually perform the best that you can.
:19:59. > :20:02.And it's Thompson's gold! A roar from Elaine Thompson. As you look at
:20:03. > :20:06.the season so far are you happy with the way things are going? I have to
:20:07. > :20:13.give God thanks every day because the life of an athlete is not easy.
:20:14. > :20:18.It's on the track day by day. The season's going good so far, let's
:20:19. > :20:21.take it race by race, stay humble and confident. So you are looking to
:20:22. > :20:29.claim gold? Definitely. That's what you are coming for? Definitely.
:20:30. > :20:34.Nothing else? Well, I am also on the relay squad and help my team to grow
:20:35. > :20:37.on the track, pass on the baton and capture that gold.
:20:38. > :20:44.STUDIO: Difficult not to like, isn't she? I could listen to her all day!
:20:45. > :20:48.Yeah. A melodic voice she has. And I could watch her run, she's
:20:49. > :20:52.fantastic. Got amazing talent. We never know what look she's going to
:20:53. > :20:58.turn up with, as well. It's a show for Elaine. It is, but she is an
:20:59. > :21:07.impressive athlete. She came on at the last couple of years and I think
:21:08. > :21:11.she has just taken over that Shelley Anne Fraser Price mantle. There is
:21:12. > :21:18.much more we are going to see from her. Shelley of course having a
:21:19. > :21:21.baby. Elaine ready to step up to the plate, Steve.
:21:22. > :21:28.I should maybe correct one thing that tends to float around, when she
:21:29. > :21:34.ran in London everybody said she ran in flats, she didn't, she ran in a
:21:35. > :21:42.sort of flat racing shoe but with a spiked plate on the bottom. And 10.
:21:43. > :21:46.94 on that occasion. She's phenomenal anyway. But been out
:21:47. > :21:57.there a long time this particular heat. They're out very early.
:21:58. > :22:15.She has an easy heat inner I think by her very high standards.
:22:16. > :22:32.As we go along, Emanuel, very experienced. Yongli Wei. A young
:22:33. > :22:45.talent we have seen going past there, popped in to say hello to us,
:22:46. > :22:54.and is coaching. I bumped into Stacey Crawford, as well.
:22:55. > :23:01.For Elaine Thompson this round is obviously just a formality. No
:23:02. > :23:06.preliminary rounds in the women's 100 metres. Straight in to this
:23:07. > :23:10.round. Top three and six fastest as Andrew pointed out earlier. There
:23:11. > :23:21.will and big cheer for this young lady I am sure. The Olympic
:23:22. > :23:25.champion. A lot of Jamaican support. I bet you some try and stay in the
:23:26. > :23:29.stadium for tonight and go, I thought my ticket was for tonight,
:23:30. > :23:34.as well! 55,000 in the stadium this morning. A full house tonight.
:23:35. > :23:45.Ariana Washington of the United States. Yet to break 11 seconds in
:23:46. > :23:54.her career. This young lady here, just 19,
:23:55. > :23:58.Khalifa St Fort. Bronze at the junior championships last year. And
:23:59. > :24:08.the Welsh-based Charlotte Wingfield. Her father is from Malta. She
:24:09. > :24:14.competes for Malta. So the top three.
:24:15. > :24:16.There he is, I said he was commentating this morning, he is
:24:17. > :24:20.not. We are the only ones who do everything!
:24:21. > :24:25.There is a few more of us, to be honest. But the rain finally comes.
:24:26. > :24:29.It was forecast and they're just about in the dry. The rain line is
:24:30. > :24:33.about five metres ahead of Thompson. So she will start in the rain and
:24:34. > :24:37.after about - sorry, start in the dry and will end up in the rain
:24:38. > :24:44.after about six metres. There you can see the rain line
:24:45. > :24:51.there. Nice start from Elaine Thompson.
:24:52. > :24:57.Emanuel going well. Elaine Thompson, very easy indeed. Good performance
:24:58. > :25:03.from her. Washington came through nicely. I bet they get off the track
:25:04. > :25:08.pretty quickly here. It's absolutely chucking it down out there! There is
:25:09. > :25:16.hair to think of and everything else. And the next round. She's a
:25:17. > :25:23.beautiful runner to watch. Nice shape out of the blocks, Colin. She
:25:24. > :25:29.will be happy to get that out of the way. She can get out of the blocks
:25:30. > :25:33.when needed. This was such a controlled run from her. Did enough
:25:34. > :25:37.to get out of the blocks well, good frequency early on, sets herself up
:25:38. > :25:42.beautifully allowing her to coast, literally, from about 60 metres all
:25:43. > :25:47.the way into the tape. Brilliant, brilliant to see. Let's look again.
:25:48. > :25:52.Shouldn't really react quickly, but it doesn't matter. Once she puts her
:25:53. > :25:55.foot down on the floor there's so much speed, so much it drifts her
:25:56. > :25:59.beautifully away and effortlessly. This is one of the things, you do
:26:00. > :26:05.not know how fast she's going because she does it without any
:26:06. > :26:12.effort whatsoever. Look at this head-on.
:26:13. > :26:21.Bang! There is the gun. Off she goes. Makes quick adjustments. Made
:26:22. > :26:28.no real difference. Drove really nicely. And with effect. Pace.
:26:29. > :26:33.Timing. Rhythm. And just smooth. All the way through to the line. Ends up
:26:34. > :26:41.with a great winning time. Just outside 11 seconds. There is a lot
:26:42. > :26:46.to come from this young lady. Yes, easy for her. She will get into
:26:47. > :26:48.the dry. Back tomorrow for the semifinal. That one of probably the
:26:49. > :27:06.easier heats. Four more heats to come.
:27:07. > :27:16.It's high jump time for the hepathletes. Caroline Schafer is a
:27:17. > :27:22.contender. The bar is now 1. 64. Well, clipped that.
:27:23. > :27:25.-- 1. 74. And the rain has come to the Olympic
:27:26. > :27:32.Stadium. It's wet under foot. And that is a
:27:33. > :27:36.factor in the high jumping. Questioning maybe the stability of
:27:37. > :27:40.the take-off foot there. The rain is on the track. Got twisted up on
:27:41. > :27:45.that. I think she rotated on the floor and backed in. The rain on the
:27:46. > :27:54.floor affects your confidence and whether you are going to slip.
:27:55. > :27:57.Broersen is very competent, see how she manages. Comfortably indeed,
:27:58. > :28:02.2014 world indoor champion. Quick to get out of the rain. They are in
:28:03. > :28:05.shelter behind. Dry there but running into the rain. Everybody
:28:06. > :28:08.knows whoever has done a high jump in a rain competition, you land on
:28:09. > :28:13.the bed, there is a pool of water, you just get wet, your clothes get
:28:14. > :28:18.wet. You are getting colder as the competition goes on. That's not good
:28:19. > :28:28.for the performance and it's not very comfortable. Katarina
:28:29. > :28:32.Johnson-Thompson is one of the best. You know what, keep that coat on as
:28:33. > :28:36.long as you can, keep warm and dry. Hopefully the showers will stop. The
:28:37. > :28:55.umbrellas have come out. Laura there would have got the
:28:56. > :28:59.bronze medal. Now it's thrown it wide open. Wide open and I think
:29:00. > :29:15.it's played in Kat's favour there. Katarina Johnson-Thompson doing, as
:29:16. > :29:24.you said, Tony, keeping warm, keeping dry. She has a world best in
:29:25. > :29:28.the second event: She can make ground and score heavily in this
:29:29. > :29:34.second discipline of seven. Just stay warm, stay with your own
:29:35. > :29:37.thoughts. She's been waiting now 35 minutes since her warm-up finished.
:29:38. > :29:42.You can see the standing water on the track. The rain has eased a
:29:43. > :29:48.little bit but it's still coming down and the standing water there
:29:49. > :29:53.for the next heat in the women's 100 metres.
:29:54. > :30:06.As Steve was saying dry for the first few paces and once they get
:30:07. > :30:11.past a few metres. Henry lit the Olympic flame in 2012. And they ran
:30:12. > :30:14.very quickly earlier this season in California, 11. 09 and good time out
:30:15. > :30:34.there as well, 22. 6. A rather damp East End of London.
:30:35. > :30:39.Spectators are a bit more dry then they would have been at the
:30:40. > :30:47.Olympics, a slightly extended roof, but that's no consolation for the
:30:48. > :30:56.athletes. The rain has just got a little bit heavier again. Standing
:30:57. > :31:06.in the dry at the moment. Henry, still just 21, but a very
:31:07. > :31:13.accomplished sprinter. A lot of big names in here, Tori Bowie of the
:31:14. > :31:21.United States, a US champion. And Blessing Okagbare. But Henry with a
:31:22. > :31:31.chance of being one of the top three automatic qualifiers. They have been
:31:32. > :31:37.brought out for a long hold to stand and look at the rain. No preliminary
:31:38. > :31:38.rounds in the women's 100 metres, so some athletes here might struggle,
:31:39. > :31:57.to say the least. And it's getting heavier. The track
:31:58. > :32:05.is very wet now. Asha Philip's time from the first heat, much as it was
:32:06. > :32:12.for Hudson-Smith's time, looking good for a fastest loser. It was a
:32:13. > :32:25.quick heat. Henry will get the traditional home welcome. CHEERING
:32:26. > :32:35.Will that inspire her to wake quick time? Gastaud, the 17-year-old. Tori
:32:36. > :32:52.Bowie. Samuel, the Dutch champion, a very
:32:53. > :33:20.good starter. Blessing Okagbare, and another
:33:21. > :33:24.double-barrelled name, Lalova-Collio of Bulgaria, 33, a double sprint
:33:25. > :33:28.finalist at the Olympics in Athens. Shows you how long she has been
:33:29. > :33:40.around. She's in lane nine. So Desiree Henry in lane two. Gastaud,
:33:41. > :33:52.Tori Bowie, Samuel, Tenorio, Patricia Taea, Okagbare and
:33:53. > :33:56.Lalova-Collio. Certainly Tori Bowie and Okagbare will be expected to go
:33:57. > :33:58.through. And Desiree Henry will be expected to go through as one of the
:33:59. > :34:19.automatic qualifiers. Desiree Henry was trying to hold on
:34:20. > :34:22.for third but it was tight. Lalova-Collio was coming through

:35:44. > :35:55.She is talking to fill. Well done. So near, yet so far. A

:45:12. > :45:12.for now. Good start for now. We wish you well for the semis and final
:45:13. > :45:23.tomorrow. California, 11. 09 and good time out
:45:24. > :45:24.there as well, 22. 6. A nice hug for the two of them. Back
:45:25. > :45:48.tomorrow for the semis. Group B of this hammer throws have
:45:49. > :45:56.to contend with a bit of rain here in the Olympic Stadium. The sun was
:45:57. > :46:00.shining earlier when Sophie Hitchin went through. No such conditions. Is
:46:01. > :46:07.going to have to stay stable here. She does. She is a resounding
:46:08. > :46:14.favourite. A huge odds-on favourites to take the title here again. A
:46:15. > :46:21.comfortable throw there. Three throws beyond 80 metres last year. A
:46:22. > :46:34.world record to take the Olympic title. Sails into the final. Sophie
:46:35. > :46:46.Hitchin involved. Wlodarczyk goes beyond qualifying. Back to this
:46:47. > :46:49.heptathlon. Carolin Schafer. Better. The rain looks like it's stopped a
:46:50. > :46:53.little. That was a better effort. Much better. She got more vertical,
:46:54. > :46:58.got up higher before she went over the bar. A lot of people try to get
:46:59. > :47:02.over the bar before they're even off the ground. It's about that height
:47:03. > :47:06.first. A better pop off the floor. Up she goes, plenty of clearance and
:47:07. > :47:10.over the bar. The floor's been dried up by the sponges so hopefully
:47:11. > :47:15.they're getting better grip out there. Fingers crossed the rain
:47:16. > :47:23.doesn't become too much of a problem. Looks like it's drying out
:47:24. > :47:29.as Broersen looks to match that clearance of 177. The slightest of
:47:30. > :47:33.wobbles, but also clear. Yeah, goes into the bar a little early as I was
:47:34. > :47:37.saying before, tries to clear the bar. Your eyes kind of take over and
:47:38. > :47:40.you think you have actually jumped and you go towards the bar instead
:47:41. > :47:49.of staying away from the bar and work the vertical.
:47:50. > :47:55.You see her rotating. Got a bit close. Katarina Johnson-Thompson
:47:56. > :48:04.watching on. She hasn't joined the second event, the high jump, just
:48:05. > :48:08.yet. She is the best in the world, 198 last year, along with Tiam. It's
:48:09. > :48:12.interesting looking at them, they're not looking at each other, they're
:48:13. > :48:15.biding their time. We have been waiting 45 minutes. Probably
:48:16. > :48:20.thinking I wish you girls would hurry up so we can get started.
:48:21. > :48:24.A yawn from Katarina Johnson-Thompson there.
:48:25. > :48:31.Looking to entertain the hungry crowd.
:48:32. > :48:55.She's not sharing, is she! Please! Will the hepathletes have lunch,
:48:56. > :49:00.Tony? They'll certainly have snacks, popcorn is a good snack. They'll
:49:01. > :49:07.have snacks in their bags, it's mainly sugars, you want fuel, petrol
:49:08. > :49:10.all the time. All dignity has gone out the window here, shovelling it
:49:11. > :49:15.in! I have a four-year-old daughter and trust me, when it comes to
:49:16. > :49:24.popcorn she doesn't share and shovels in the same way. Bless them!
:49:25. > :49:30.This bucket is mine, this giant bucket! First heat of the giant

:49:35. > :49:44.Trying to come through as the fastest loser on the left!
:49:45. > :49:46.Just power it in! It's not as if you are on national
:49:47. > :49:55.television at all. It's gone, it's finished. Let's move
:49:56. > :50:13.on to the 5th heat in the women's 100 metres.
:50:14. > :50:24.Kambundji, European bronze-medallist last summer. Swiss champion over 100
:50:25. > :50:39.and 200. Far better in the 100. Simone Facey of Jamaica. In the
:50:40. > :50:44.shadow now of Elaine Thompson. Pinto of Germany and Chand of India.
:50:45. > :50:48.Michelle-Lee Ahye. A little bit of a habit of running quickly throughout
:50:49. > :50:57.the season, not doing it at major championships, ran 10. 82 in
:50:58. > :50:58.Trinidad in June. Buchanan in eight. And then Santos of Brazil on the
:50:59. > :51:10.outside. Again three going through
:51:11. > :51:16.automatically. This is the penultimate first round heat. Henry
:51:17. > :51:17.still in a good position, and Asha Philip certainly going to go
:51:18. > :51:49.through. And, that will be, unfortunately,
:51:50. > :51:54.Pinto, who is going to turn round and eventually head straight out. I
:51:55. > :51:59.would say there was a little bit of noise in the field events and the
:52:00. > :52:07.heptathlon going on just before the start. But Tatjana Pinto, you see
:52:08. > :52:13.her head go and the rest of her and a little doubt about that. Yes,
:52:14. > :52:18.unfortunately, for her. That warm-up that she did about an
:52:19. > :52:26.hour-and-a-half ago may not be needed. Lane five, it will be a red
:52:27. > :52:32.card for Tatjana Pinto, all the training and preparation comes to
:52:33. > :52:41.nothing. Such a good run from Luckenkemper, her team-mate ran 10.
:52:42. > :52:59.95 but she is off. Makes things easier for some others,
:53:00. > :53:18.as well. Pinto would have certainly fancied one of the top three places.
:53:19. > :53:30.Santos going strongly in lane nine. Those three coming away. Facey is
:53:31. > :53:33.edged out. Santos runs well. 11. 05. A fraction outside her personal
:53:34. > :53:37.best. Slightly damper, cooler conditions, as well. A very good run
:53:38. > :53:40.from the Brazilian. 100th of a second down on her personal best
:53:41. > :53:45.time. It's been rounded down equalling her personal best. That is
:53:46. > :53:51.the way to move through to the semifinals, very good run in lane
:53:52. > :53:57.nine. Michelle-Lee Ahye I am sure she has more to spare. She does at
:53:58. > :54:02.least go through. Good sprinting from all the women so far, we have
:54:03. > :54:08.seen quick times and in very controlled conditions. I am looking
:54:09. > :54:14.forward to those semifinals. Santos, nice and strong from the beginning.
:54:15. > :54:20.We expect Kambundji to get a great start. Let's see what Ahye has to
:54:21. > :54:26.offer in the semifinals. There is the Olympic champion
:54:27. > :54:36.getting ready to join this second discipline of seven while Alina
:54:37. > :54:43.Shukh of Ukraine, just 20 years of age, 180 and comfortably clear.
:54:44. > :54:54.So then. Looks as though the rain has
:54:55. > :55:01.stopped. They've mopped up the puddles. Decent conditions again
:55:02. > :55:08.Shukh making the best of them. That knee is heavily strapped for the
:55:09. > :55:12.young Ukrainian. Here is Thiam, the best high jumper, the best
:55:13. > :55:18.hepathlete in the world currently, third best ever has gone through the
:55:19. > :55:25.7,000-point mark. Opens her high jump with a clearance of 180.
:55:26. > :55:31.Well, I am sure she will have had a sigh of, not relief, but wanted to
:55:32. > :55:36.get that jump out of the way. She's been waiting 55 minutes, an hour,
:55:37. > :55:43.goes at it, throws herself backwards. That sort of is similar
:55:44. > :55:48.to her style. Having waiting an hour to get that jump, it will be the
:55:49. > :55:55.same situation for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. The sun comes out
:55:56. > :56:04.as Katarina gets ready to also join the high jump. Things looking good.
:56:05. > :56:09.We go back to Erica Bougard of the United States. Talk about leaning
:56:10. > :56:13.in, take me through what went wrong there. I would like to see that jump
:56:14. > :56:18.again. What should normally happen is you run a curve, lean away, that
:56:19. > :56:23.creates a force to jump upwards. You have to go with the lean. Like you
:56:24. > :56:27.are riding a bike around the corner and see how her head, if you watch
:56:28. > :56:33.her head, it leans and goes towards the bar. Takes her into the bar.
:56:34. > :56:41.Instead of staying away and then converting it straight to lift. It's
:56:42. > :56:54.a waiting game for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
:56:55. > :57:00.But Krizsan of Hungary. Her best ever is 181. Not even close. Having
:57:01. > :57:06.a few problems there I think with the rhythm. It is a rhythm event. If
:57:07. > :57:09.you have that smooth rhythm running, so that you accelerate, each step
:57:10. > :57:15.gets quicker than the one before, and set it up, lean back. See the
:57:16. > :57:20.head just takes her in. Wherever the head in that inside arm go, the body
:57:21. > :57:28.will follow. You have to send those upwards into the air. The cheers
:57:29. > :57:32.from the huge crowd here, 60,000 people, looking on as Katarina
:57:33. > :57:38.Johnson-Thompson, a solid start in that hurdles, first event. First
:57:39. > :57:48.attempt. Now 180. Oh, yes! Great start for KJT.
:57:49. > :57:53.Appreciative of a very noisy support. A wonderful atmosphere here
:57:54. > :57:58.in the stadium. First time clearance for her opening height. Good start.
:57:59. > :58:06.Yeah. Again nice and steady. Again rotates a little bit. Goes towards
:58:07. > :58:10.the bar. Is that me or does she have strapping on that take-off foot?
:58:11. > :58:17.Giving her a little extra support on that foot. I would like to see that
:58:18. > :58:22.again. She has the tights on so it would be difficult to see. There we
:58:23. > :58:27.go up and over the bar. Steady, a nice opener. Yeah, just a little bit
:58:28. > :58:33.of tape you see on that left foot. Hopefully just giving her a little
:58:34. > :58:42.bit of support and hopefully nothing wrong there at all. She is one of
:58:43. > :58:53.the tallest athletes. Uses levers so well. Thiam, they are the two best
:58:54. > :59:00.ever high jump scores and performances. Yeah, to be fair about
:59:01. > :59:08.the Olympics, they weren't offered 198 to jump, they were offered 197.
:59:09. > :59:13.Yeah, it's a bit of a moot point as to whether she would have won that
:59:14. > :59:24.one. Well, success so far for KJT in the
:59:25. > :59:30.high jump. Deajah Stevens going in this final heat. The final heat of
:59:31. > :59:41.this women's 100 metres. Trying to calm herself down.
:59:42. > :59:48.Baptiste still running fast. Morrison of Jamaica, 4th in their
:59:49. > :00:03.championships but is close to 11 seconds. Swoboda interesting to see
:00:04. > :00:06.how she goes. And Neita, a 20-year-old. Still a teenager when
:00:07. > :00:26.she won for Great Britain in Rio. Daryll Neita will want to be in the
:00:27. > :00:31.top three here, but this is one of the tougher heats. The likes of
:00:32. > :00:32.Swoboda, wonder how she will go. Morrison, Baptiste and Stevens in
:00:33. > :00:46.the middle. It has just warmed up a tout with
:00:47. > :00:49.the sun trying to break through. The rain has stopped, so better
:00:50. > :01:04.conditions than for some of the middle heats.
:01:05. > :01:13.It will be very tight, Daryll Neita running a great race, and she wins
:01:14. > :01:21.it! Excellent, no wonder the arm goes aloft. She needed to run well.
:01:22. > :01:30.Tough heat, the women all running sub 11, or all 11-2. Daryll Neita,
:01:31. > :01:36.didn't take any chances, winning the race. It's close, Colin. Good start,
:01:37. > :01:46.Morrison getting out well. Swoboda gets out well as ever. Asha Philip
:01:47. > :01:52.ran 11.14, but a few nerves no doubt. You can see the relief for

:01:56. > :02:03.experience in major championships will be crucial for her to improve
:02:04. > :02:08.and get better. Out of the blocks, kept focused, at no stage did she
:02:09. > :02:13.thinks to herself, I'm in the lead and I can cruise. No, a good, solid
:02:14. > :02:18.job, exactly what she did in the trials. It's what you want to see
:02:19. > :02:21.athletes do, not taking any risks, not taking anything for granted, and
:02:22. > :02:28.putting out a good solid performance. It was a tough
:02:29. > :02:33.first-round race for her. You can see why she's very pleased. You can
:02:34. > :02:39.see her reaction, yes, I'm through. The 100 metre hurdles heats
:02:40. > :02:44.tomorrow. The important thing there, Colin, we knew there were five good
:02:45. > :02:48.ones in this and all five will qualify as fastest losers. But don't
:02:49. > :02:52.take the risk or the chance. Lane nine might have helped, she was away
:02:53. > :02:56.from some of the rest that was going on. You can see her focus. Not
:02:57. > :03:04.looking across and running her own race in lane nine. It's a really
:03:05. > :03:07.professional job. Very impressive, Young, 20 years old. A performance
:03:08. > :03:09.like that to book her place in the semifinal very well. We can hear
:03:10. > :03:20.what she has to say now. A very happy Daryll Neita down by
:03:21. > :03:25.the side of me. After a tremendous performance. I know I'm in the best
:03:26. > :03:30.shape of my life. It's all about focus, my coach, my team. They have
:03:31. > :03:33.got me into such an amazing place and I'm so grateful. I'm going to
:03:34. > :03:39.put my head down and rest up for the semi. It was a stack is heat and you
:03:40. > :03:47.have won it. I've taken some really fast girls. It was a tough field but
:03:48. > :03:51.I had to believe in myself. When we talked in Paris in the holding camp
:03:52. > :03:54.you said you wanted to be at the top of the sport. It's not just about
:03:55. > :03:58.getting through round by round, you want to be an Olympic champion. One
:03:59. > :04:02.day I want to be an Olympic champion. I have a bronze medal and
:04:03. > :04:05.now I'm rooting for the higher medals. The only way to get those
:04:06. > :04:09.medals into race against those who have them. Tomorrow when you have to
:04:10. > :04:16.step it up again, you were close to your personal best there. 11.15, but
:04:17. > :04:20.I feel there is more in me. I feel great right now. I will recover and
:04:21. > :04:32.chill and then move onto tomorrow. Continue to enjoy well done.
:04:33. > :04:36.Baptiste and Swoboda, despite not finishing in the top three, they
:04:37. > :04:40.will go through as fastest losers and the good news is all three
:04:41. > :04:47.British sprinters going through. It was tight at the end for Henry. One
:04:48. > :04:59.disqualification for Pinto might have helped. Not sure how quick
:05:00. > :05:00.Pinto would have run. Luckenkemper heading up the qualifiers, very
:05:01. > :05:18.impressive. The fastest losers on the last page.
:05:19. > :05:21.Desiree Henry is the sixth of them. Just enough to be in the semifinal.
:05:22. > :05:26.Three British women in the semifinals. STUDIO:
:05:27. > :05:38.A word on Daryll Neita. Well done to that man being prepared, not many of
:05:39. > :05:41.us carry that in our handbags. Maybe he was hoping for the sun. Daryll
:05:42. > :05:47.Neita's interview was refreshing there. A few British sprinters,
:05:48. > :05:53.including Martyn Rooney earlier, they didn't seem to have a game face
:05:54. > :05:57.on. It's very refreshing. She's focused on the semifinal, we didn't
:05:58. > :06:00.hear any fluff, she's focused on the task at hand. You are here to
:06:01. > :06:08.produce your best performance right now, when it counts. Take it round
:06:09. > :06:12.by round. Thankfully Matthew Hudson-Smith made it in. And his
:06:13. > :06:17.interview as well was about learning from mistakes. You have to apply
:06:18. > :06:21.that right now as opposed to using this as any sort of opportunity for
:06:22. > :06:25.something in the future that isn't promised. You are here right now,
:06:26. > :06:30.all the work that you put in, you want to put it together here. It was
:06:31. > :06:33.refreshing to hear her not just celebrate the win, she didn't really
:06:34. > :06:37.talk about that at all, she talked about the semifinals and what you
:06:38. > :06:41.want to do there, and ultimately what she wants to do. She made no
:06:42. > :06:46.apologies, she wants to be Olympic champion and that's what you want to
:06:47. > :06:49.hear. There was a collective sit up and listen when she said that.
:06:50. > :06:53.Staking your claim and staking in Ames is a bold thing to do, but why

:07:12. > :07:15.Thank goodness the cameraman duct at the right time. It would have been a

:07:28. > :07:31.Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk has come through in the 200-metre

:07:45. > :07:54.light work of qualifying for the hammer final, booking her spot in
:07:55. > :07:58.the final. Defending champion Elaine Thompson was also in cruise control,
:07:59. > :08:07.qualifying at a canter for her semifinals. Plenty more still to
:08:08. > :08:11.come until 2pm. Later this evening, another super Saturday in this
:08:12. > :08:23.stadium, memories of 2012 are never far away. No doubt Usain Bolt will
:08:24. > :08:29.be the main man this evening. What a night it should be. Long jump final
:08:30. > :08:36.as well, sadly no Greg Rutherford, who is injured.
:08:37. > :08:41.Katarina Johnson-Thompson and her fellow competitors have got to get

:08:48. > :08:50.she entered the competition at 1.80 along with Olympic champion Nafi
:08:51. > :08:55.Thiam. They are down there somewhere behind us. The rain did stop for KJT
:08:56. > :09:05.when she took her first attempt at 1.80 and cleared it nicely.
:09:06. > :09:10.Hopefully that will give her a lift, the son opening up. The cloud
:09:11. > :09:17.lifting, the conditions. We know she can jump higher. Just acknowledging
:09:18. > :09:22.the crowd's response. But she's really focused at this point because
:09:23. > :09:25.she knows jumping high today is important. Being aware of the
:09:26. > :09:34.competition around her. She's in good shape right now. And there is
:09:35. > :09:37.Nafi Thiam, still in that competition. The high jump takes a
:09:38. > :09:40.long time, a lot of athletes in there. We are now getting to the
:09:41. > :09:51.stage where only the best jumpers are left in it. This was Nafi
:09:52. > :09:55.Thiam's 1.80. Just like KJT, such a strong event. It's a big point
:09:56. > :09:59.scorer for the girls, easily you can get 1000 points. Everybody trying to
:10:00. > :10:03.get as close to 1000 points for every single event. This is one
:10:04. > :10:07.event where you can do that in abundance. A nice clearance from
:10:08. > :10:11.her, again, relaxed and confident and flying high. The next event on
:10:12. > :10:15.the track is the men's 800-metre heat. We can catch up with Steve
:10:16. > :10:21.Cram and Paula Radcliffe in the commentary box. Where is men's
:10:22. > :10:27.800-metre running on a global sense, and specifically on our British
:10:28. > :10:33.hopefuls? COMMENTATOR: No David Rudisha, always a shame when you are

:10:54. > :11:01.World 800-metre running is at a very high level. Bringing Paula in on the

:12:10. > :12:13.still don't feel like I have achieved what I wanted to achieve
:12:14. > :12:20.this year. It's a bittersweet feeling almost. I've had a bit of a
:12:21. > :12:25.hard start to the year with family members and a friend passing away.
:12:26. > :12:29.It was hard in the camp, but it's all coming together now. Beijing

:12:56. > :13:05.The first of six heats. Drew Windle going here for the United States. He

:13:33. > :13:41.Kipyegon Bett, second in the Diamond League meetings this year in Rome,

:14:09. > :14:17.fast, he's in lane nine. Three going through automatically, and the sixth
:14:18. > :14:22.fastest losers. Alzaabi, the European under 23 champion, of the

:15:05. > :15:07.Second that the Kenyan trials. And summer has returned to the Olympic
:15:08. > :15:23.Stadium. The first of six heats in the men's
:15:24. > :15:27.800 metres. Look out for Kramer in the blue and yellow. Likes to take
:15:28. > :15:32.it out quickly. A very talented athlete he is. He is going to settle
:15:33. > :15:38.in a little here unless he picks up the pace and moves across, as they
:15:39. > :15:42.break. Kramer just tucking himself in,
:15:43. > :15:47.alongside Bett at the moment. Yeah, took a few looks across and straight
:15:48. > :15:54.to the front. This is the way he ran when he won the European under-23s
:15:55. > :15:58.last month. Not afraid to commit. The first three to qualify in top
:15:59. > :16:03.heats and six fastest losers and you are in the first heat you want to

:16:46. > :16:55.There is a big gap for him to try to get back. Bett in front. Drew Windle
:16:56. > :17:01.beginning to make his move. It's a long way to try to come back. Windle
:17:02. > :17:09.sees the door opening. He will get through! As one of the three
:17:10. > :17:15.automatic qualifiers. And Ayouni was drifting out. The door opened for
:17:16. > :17:19.Drew Windle. That's how to pace it, just about. That's how to wing it!
:17:20. > :17:23.That's how to give it everything that you have got and to seize the
:17:24. > :17:31.opportunity at the last possible moment. He was really relying on
:17:32. > :17:40.Ayouni in front and there being space enough. Maybe he has learned
:17:41. > :17:49.to race smarter in the next round. A bit of of a shoelace problem for
:17:50. > :18:00.Bett. Didn't hamper him. First place for Kipyegon Bett. Up and running in
:18:01. > :18:04.the 800 metres. Fascinating event. Ayouni started to struggle. Windle
:18:05. > :18:07.coming through. This is how the different pacings of different
:18:08. > :18:12.runners judging it differently in the 800 metres. Windle had more to
:18:13. > :18:16.give. Illustrating in a heat situation, even when you think you

:18:21. > :18:23.the line is what we have to keep telling junior athletes more and
:18:24. > :18:28.more. You don't know where the spots are going to open up. Ayouni
:18:29. > :18:31.drifting to lane two. Sometimes when you are so hired the last thing you
:18:32. > :18:36.are thinking about is remaining tight to the kerb. It opened up for
:18:37. > :18:41.Windle to come through. Kramer did what he always does. He goes
:18:42. > :18:54.through, as well. With Drew Windle. Confirmation of that:
:18:55. > :19:00.The heptathlon continues. A very relaxed looking Katarina

:19:13. > :19:23.champion, explain tactics behind the strategy of passing at this height,
:19:24. > :19:26.Tony. It's a smart move, basically. They're very comfortable jumping
:19:27. > :19:29.past the height, conserve energy. You are probably looking between
:19:30. > :19:32.nine and 11 jumps total in a competition. This is a two-day
:19:33. > :19:38.competition. So you are conserving energy. They've a big break after
:19:39. > :19:44.this but you want to be at your best when the bar is at its highest, so
:19:45. > :19:47.save that energy for later. Katarina Johnson-Thompson doing just that.
:19:48. > :19:53.The rain has been an issue so far but it looks as though it's drying
:19:54. > :19:59.out and Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Thiam will get the best of the
:20:00. > :20:11.conditions in this second event of the heptathlon. Scafer of Germany,
:20:12. > :20:18.she has had six jumps already. -- Schafer. Goes clear the first time
:20:19. > :20:24.of asking for a change. A decent jump. Her best is 186 this year.
:20:25. > :20:28.Seven jumps there, perfect. Remember you are going to finish with three
:20:29. > :20:34.jumps, the last three are going to be fails. She's getting to a height
:20:35. > :20:39.she wants, par if you like in golf terms, the next height she gets
:20:40. > :20:48.that, anything above that is a bonus points. Broersen, 27 years of age
:20:49. > :20:52.now but has had injury worries. 183 proving too much. If you just look
:20:53. > :21:03.at her right knee you can see - sorry the left knee. The black
:21:04. > :21:08.strapping. It shows there is probably the tendon is inflamed on
:21:09. > :21:12.the knee. Again it makes it difficult to jump off because you
:21:13. > :21:16.feel pain as you take off. So you put the strap on which takes the
:21:17. > :21:39.pressure off the tendon. Down the other end of the track,
:21:40. > :21:44.thankfully no injuries for Kyle Langford. He has the front running
:21:45. > :21:48.Dutchman, there in the orange, that will help, because he knows - the
:21:49. > :21:53.first heat that's just taken place if you are not in the top three,
:21:54. > :21:57.there were six men under 1. 47 flat, so you get in the wrong heat where
:21:58. > :22:02.they go too slow and you have no chance going through as the fastest
:22:03. > :22:09.loser. This is one of the tougher heats. He has Kupers, he will make
:22:10. > :22:14.sure it's quick, I am sure, that will be good for Kyle, there will be
:22:15. > :22:19.no nerves. Just go and run. Still have to come in the top three. But
:22:20. > :22:24.if he doesn't he has a chance of getting a decent time. Only third in
:22:25. > :22:29.the British championships. He was surprised that day by Lamont who
:22:30. > :22:38.then got the qualifying time in London and got the automatic spot.
:22:39. > :22:52.Kyle ran quick enough, as well. And missed out was Andrew Sarge.
:22:53. > :23:03.Kevin Lopez, the very experienced Spanish athlete. Branden McBride,
:23:04. > :23:12.very good indicated andian. Had a great race in Monaco recently. --
:23:13. > :23:24.very good Canadian. Lopez from Mexico could be a threat,
:23:25. > :23:34.as well. There is Jesus Lopez. Gakeme, really
:23:35. > :23:44.good form, indoor at the indoor championships last year, twice made
:23:45. > :23:49.semifinals. McBride in great form. Paris of Argentina.
:23:50. > :23:55.Then the European indoor bronze-medallist, European team
:23:56. > :24:04.champion this year, Kupers and Lopez in between him and Kyle Langford.
:24:05. > :24:11.Great talent, Kyle, has good speed, as well. When you look at 800
:24:12. > :24:15.metres, you want them to be able to run quick 400 and Kyle has that, he
:24:16. > :24:19.has to get his race brain into gear, as well.
:24:20. > :24:26.Hopefully if it's nice and quick he won't have to give that too much
:24:27. > :24:33.thought. So second heat. Top three. Jesus
:24:34. > :24:37.Lopez in the green of Mexico starting quickly. They'll all be
:24:38. > :24:45.looking for Kupers in the orange vest. Natural frontrunner here.
:24:46. > :24:54.There he goes. Has a look across. Maybe he is thinking... McBride
:24:55. > :25:00.under his shoulder. Langford in about 6th, that's fine as long as
:25:01. > :25:03.there is decent pace on. Yeah, Kyle Langford, a huge talent but needs to
:25:04. > :25:07.learn his trade, as it were, as he comes through. He has a tendency to
:25:08. > :25:11.overuse his energy in the first couple of rounds, especially if he
:25:12. > :25:17.gets himself into trouble. It's good to see him outside. Giving himself
:25:18. > :25:25.space and time to react. A little slower than the first heat. McBride
:25:26. > :25:31.at the front. Kupers is on the kerb. Lopez is in a good spot. Tries to
:25:32. > :25:41.give Lopez. They're still fighting there.
:25:42. > :25:46.Really not happy there, he gave Lopez quite a shove. You can see a
:25:47. > :25:54.grimace on Kyle's face. He looks to wait until the home straight.
:25:55. > :25:59.They're all good finishers here. Lopez, both Lopez. Kyle, has he
:26:00. > :26:04.enough to get into the top three. McBride goes away. Lopez and Kupers
:26:05. > :26:15.keep moving away. He is going to be 5th at best here. Kupers wins.
:26:16. > :26:18.McBride and lose Lopez. Gakeme and then Langford. There is still plenty
:26:19. > :26:22.of heats to come and he is 5th. That's going to be a tough one. In
:26:23. > :26:26.terms of times. A shake of the head. He wasn't in touch with 200. He
:26:27. > :26:30.wasn't close enough. He is a good quality athlete and he is good in
:26:31. > :26:33.the home straight but he gave these guys a head start. You can't really
:26:34. > :26:36.do that. You have to be more in the race. McBride had slowed it nicely
:26:37. > :26:42.to give him a chance to get involved. He didn't take that chance
:26:43. > :26:45.down the back straight. Then just doesn't have enough legs to... To
:26:46. > :26:49.run athletes of that was quality down. He is still involved as a
:26:50. > :26:53.fastest loser at this point. But I worry for him going through. It's a
:26:54. > :26:59.big worry for him going forward. He knows that. He is shaking his head.
:27:00. > :27:05.Almost as if he is saying goodbyes now. He allowed that shove to knock
:27:06. > :27:08.him off his stride and almost gave up a little bit at that point. Then
:27:09. > :27:12.he came back fighting but left himself too much work to do. You
:27:13. > :27:21.can't make up ground like that on guys like Kevin Lopez who is moving
:27:22. > :27:27.through, knocking Gakeme out of that top three position. Those loser
:27:28. > :27:30.spots will fill up as you see the heats go on. Third fastest at the
:27:31. > :27:35.moment. I am sure Phil will let him know that. Let's see what
:27:36. > :27:40.You are the third fastest of the fasters at the moment so you are
:27:41. > :27:44.still in the mix you with disappointment was on your face as
:27:45. > :27:50.you crossed the line, Kyle. Yeah, it's a hard game, you know, it will
:27:51. > :27:56.eat you up and spit you out. I wasn't good enough there. I gave
:27:57. > :27:59.everything I could. But it was just, you know, inexperience with myself,
:28:00. > :28:02.just maybe not in the right position, going when I should go.
:28:03. > :28:09.But, you know, hopefully I will make it through. But, I have to improve
:28:10. > :28:13.on these sort of things and can't happen again, but it is what it is.
:28:14. > :28:17.Being closer to the guys at the front coming down the home straight,
:28:18. > :28:22.was that the key today? I don't know, I was trying to sit back and
:28:23. > :28:28.pick off, I sat a little bit too wide. And the last 100, it was all
:28:29. > :28:35.moving the same pace, I was catching but, you know, they're kicking just
:28:36. > :28:38.as fast, so should have been closer but John, my coach, we will sit down
:28:39. > :28:39.and look at this and improve. We appreciate you talking to us. Thank
:28:40. > :28:50.you. Where he lost that was down the back
:28:51. > :28:54.straight. He had a chance, they were all moving at the same pace as he
:28:55. > :28:57.said, but he was already, five, six metres back.
:28:58. > :29:08.He will be in at the moment. We do have plenty more heats to
:29:09. > :29:12.come. The sun is back out.
:29:13. > :29:18.It's warmer again. Cram has taken his gilet off! And
:29:19. > :29:33.Thiam, the Olympic champion, gets ready. Katarina Johnson-Thompson
:29:34. > :29:40.waits. She will follow Thiam. This is the second event of seven. Thiam
:29:41. > :29:46.doesn't look as if she's settled into this competition yet. Katarina
:29:47. > :29:50.Johnson-Thompson looking comfortable so far. Thiam looking slightly
:29:51. > :29:55.anxious, this is her best event. She rose to the occasion last year. What
:29:56. > :30:03.has she got at 186? That's more like it.
:30:04. > :30:06.That will settle the nerves. Yeah, let's not get too carried away on
:30:07. > :30:10.the difference with technique and style. She gets up in the air, comes
:30:11. > :30:14.off the floor very well. It looks jerky, doesn't look smooth and in a
:30:15. > :30:20.classic way. Arms there, drives them up. Works the knee. Probably could
:30:21. > :30:23.work it a little bit hard, drive it up to give yourself more lift. Again
:30:24. > :30:27.at this height it's comfortable, she will have confidence. I think she
:30:28. > :30:28.will grow as the competition comes and the same for Katarina
:30:29. > :30:39.Johnson-Thompson here. Johnson-Thompson at the same height.
:30:40. > :30:44.That was a miss. The runner-up looked wrong. She was too close.
:30:45. > :30:49.Yeah, I think she got too close and ran in. Remember, she's had one jump
:30:50. > :30:54.in an hour and a half, 90 minutes. That's just the second. A little bit
:30:55. > :30:57.of rust, doesn't matter, you cannot get off twice as long as you keep
:30:58. > :31:03.clearing the height. Backing into the bar and taking it off with her
:31:04. > :31:06.shoulders. Lean away, stay away and I'm sure she'll get the vertical.
:31:07. > :31:15.I'm sure she'll get it, it's well within her repertoire. 1.95 in
:31:16. > :31:22.Gotzis this year. Best of 1.98 last year. It's well within her
:31:23. > :31:25.capabilities. You will get a lengthening and shortening of stride
:31:26. > :31:29.in order to get the rhythm. As long as you don't buckle on the knee too
:31:30. > :31:33.much, because then every time you bend the knee energy is lost into
:31:34. > :31:39.the floor and you don't get the return off the floor. Under the
:31:40. > :31:45.guidance of the new coach, moving to France. Bertrand is the new coach to
:31:46. > :31:49.guide Katarina Johnson-Thompson, lets hope to potentially a rostrum
:31:50. > :31:57.finish in the World Championships here. But there is the favourite,
:31:58. > :32:04.Nafi Thiam. They coach plays a big part, Tony, but you would say that,
:32:05. > :32:06.wouldn't you? Definitely. A lot of information coming from the coach,
:32:07. > :32:11.the critical thing is the relationship between the athlete and
:32:12. > :32:14.coach, not so much the technical, but the relationship, the way you
:32:15. > :32:18.support them and communicate and get information across to them. Ready
:32:19. > :32:29.for the third heat in the first round of the men's 400 metres.
:32:30. > :32:36.Rotich goes in the outside. Harris, second in the US trials behind
:32:37. > :32:42.Donavan Brazier. A 1:44.53 this season. He goes to Penn State
:32:43. > :32:49.University. There is no Almassri in lane six. Remove straighter Elliot
:32:50. > :32:55.Giles, the UK champion. -- we move straight to Elliot Giles. Won on
:32:56. > :32:59.this track in the Diamond League meeting. He tends to run tactically
:33:00. > :33:07.very well, so we will see how he handles this. El Guesse of Morocco,
:33:08. > :33:15.Sanchez of Puerto Rico, and De Arriba of Spain. Keeping an eye on
:33:16. > :33:23.the times with Kyle Langford hanging on. It's still early, still heats to
:33:24. > :33:26.go. He's currently the third fastest loser at the moment. Elliot Giles is
:33:27. > :33:33.looking to go through as one of the automatic qualifiers here. Left for
:33:34. > :33:39.a moment on the start, Elliot Giles, but he does tend to judge things
:33:40. > :33:52.pretty well. The men to look out for, Rogic on the outside.
:33:53. > :34:06.-- Rotich on the outside. Elliot Giles in fifth at the moment. He's
:34:07. > :34:10.settling into fifth. He's ready to cover any moves in the race. He gets
:34:11. > :34:15.himself in good positions. The one place where he didn't was in Monaco
:34:16. > :34:23.where he went out much too hard and paid for it in the closing stages.
:34:24. > :34:29.He has learned from that. Ferguson Rotich takes it out from Sanchez.
:34:30. > :34:37.Elliot Giles battling for fourth at the mode. Three of them will go
:34:38. > :34:46.through automatically. Sanchez alongside Ferguson Rotich. El Guesse
:34:47. > :34:54.tries to make a move. De Arriba, the bronze-medallist in the European
:34:55. > :34:58.indoors is also there. Ferguson Rotich and Sanchez and Giles all
:34:59. > :35:01.looking good at the moment. Three will go through automatically. But
:35:02. > :35:07.Harris will have something down the home straight. Sanchez has gone.
:35:08. > :35:13.Suddenly it's three of them clear. Elliot Giles able to look around, is
:35:14. > :35:18.comfortable and looking strong. There are your three to go through
:35:19. > :35:24.automatically. Ferguson Rotich taking the victory. A good run from
:35:25. > :35:30.Elliot Giles. Harris is thereafter jostling and barging. Sanchez fell
:35:31. > :35:35.away. Comfortable for the automatic places, the top three and a good run
:35:36. > :35:38.from Elliot Giles. A very good run from Elliot Giles. If we look back
:35:39. > :35:43.we will see how well he judged the race down the back straight. He was
:35:44. > :35:48.also a tiny bit lucky, managing to find space and manoeuvre himself
:35:49. > :35:51.through on the inside to get himself into a very good position coming
:35:52. > :36:02.into the last 200 metres. Acquitted himself really well. Katarina
:36:03. > :36:07.Johnson-Thompson eyeing up the bar at 1.86, that she has dislodged at
:36:08. > :36:13.the first time of asking. A more serious look on the face of
:36:14. > :36:20.Johnson-Thompson. Steps sideways there. That was very close.
:36:21. > :36:28.We'll be very keen to see this as the replay, Tony. Two fouls at 1.8
:36:29. > :36:35.six. Not looking great for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Just her heel at
:36:36. > :36:40.the end, just didn't get it out. That's well within her capabilities.
:36:41. > :36:46.I'm confident she will get that. She might rue that a little bit. She
:36:47. > :36:49.drove up. You see how fast she has travelled along the bed. From the
:36:50. > :36:53.point of take-off to the point where she lands, it's just soft, she needs
:36:54. > :36:58.to convert more of a punch to put herself in the F. The travel across
:36:59. > :37:06.has caused the rotation to flick the bar. Carolin Schafer at the second
:37:07. > :37:09.time of asking. Clean clearance. She will be delighted with that. Three
:37:10. > :37:18.fouls and it's the end of your competition, remember. Second time
:37:19. > :37:23.clearance and a personal best for Carolin Schafer. It bodes well for
:37:24. > :37:28.her medal challenge. That's an equal personal best. That's what she
:37:29. > :37:33.cleared in Gotzis. That's par now, solid performing. It's what you want
:37:34. > :37:39.in heptathlon. The bar now goes to 1.8 nine. Can she get the points
:37:40. > :37:46.bonus. Broersen has had a lot of attempts for a loop 1.90 plus high
:37:47. > :37:54.jumper. Perhaps showing a lack of confidence in her abilities. That
:37:55. > :37:55.wasn't even close. Two fouls for Broersen at 1.86, and looking under
:37:56. > :38:05.pressure. Just around the last heat in the
:38:06. > :38:09.men's 800 metres. Elliot Giles going through as an automatic qualifier.
:38:10. > :38:14.Kyle Langford has been knocked down to the fourth fastest loser. But
:38:15. > :38:18.Elliot Giles is safely through. Safely through and a happy man.
:38:19. > :38:24.Obviously this is a huge stage. You had a taste of it in Rio last year.
:38:25. > :38:27.This year you have now done what you didn't do last year and accomplished
:38:28. > :38:37.and a performance in the first round. It's staying relaxed in these
:38:38. > :38:43.moments. I looked at it as a normal race without the pressure. Stay calm
:38:44. > :38:47.all the way through. It paid off, if I had panicked I could have been in
:38:48. > :38:54.trouble with 200 to go. It all went to plan. We've made the semis. We
:38:55. > :38:59.wish you well for the semis. Thank you.
:39:00. > :39:06.We have seen Johnson-Thompson with two fouls at 1.86 and she has to go
:39:07. > :39:09.clear to stay in contention. It's early days to talk about medals, but
:39:10. > :39:22.this is her strongest event across the Severn. 1.98 last year in Rio.
:39:23. > :39:27.She has to go higher because the throws are so weak, the shot and
:39:28. > :39:31.javelin. Johnson-Thompson has to throw caution to the wind and find a
:39:32. > :39:36.way of getting over. She can jump this. I'm sat here with butterflies.
:39:37. > :39:40.It's like I'm coaching again. The significance of this, if she doesn't
:39:41. > :39:44.clear that she has lost 180 points for personal best score this year. I
:39:45. > :39:52.have every confidence she will clear this because it is well within her
:39:53. > :39:58.capabilities. She knows what to do. Johnson-Thompson at 1.86, her last
:39:59. > :40:06.attempt. No! That's a massive disappointment for Johnson-Thompson.
:40:07. > :40:12.She knows it. Three fouls, a serious haemorrhaging of points. Speechless,
:40:13. > :40:20.Steve. I feel for the girl, absolutely feel for her. That means
:40:21. > :40:28.a score for her, at this moment in time, if she repeats all the marks
:40:29. > :40:32.she she got in Gotzis, then she could score 6500. We know it's not
:40:33. > :40:38.over because 6600 can get you on the podium. She can find points because
:40:39. > :40:42.she can go 30 centimetres longer in the long jump. She can find it
:40:43. > :40:47.elsewhere. It's not over, it will be a tough conversation for the coach,
:40:48. > :40:50.but this is where the coach earns their corn. Big disappointment for
:40:51. > :40:54.Johnson-Thompson in an event where she was expected to take a lot of
:40:55. > :41:03.points. It's like getting a double bogey or worse. She has to carry
:41:04. > :41:10.those points, and she knows it. Huge disappointment. For me that's a real
:41:11. > :41:15.lack of discipline. The run-up is sloppy. It changed every time. She
:41:16. > :41:20.has done it before in the long jump. We have seen her unfold and unravel
:41:21. > :41:25.in the throwing where she is not as confident. We needed to see her go
:41:26. > :41:36.clear there. We will come back to it. Broersen with two fouls. No.
:41:37. > :41:42.Broersen also, her high jumper also comes to a grinding halt. But she
:41:43. > :41:46.had a clearance of 1.8 three. So Johnson-Thompson... She's leaving
:41:47. > :41:52.the arena in a different mood to how she entered. She will be bitterly
:41:53. > :41:57.disappointed at this moment in time. Like I say, in athletics you have
:41:58. > :42:02.the chance of making comments here, so it will be down to the coach. In
:42:03. > :42:12.this heat we have perhaps the gold-medal contender for the
:42:13. > :42:19.800-metre title. Korir in lane nine, might not be known to athletic fans
:42:20. > :42:28.too much. Based in the US, has great ability. A 44 second 400 metre man
:42:29. > :42:35.who can run brilliant 800 metres. Moving across now. A really open
:42:36. > :42:41.heat, this one. Marc Reuther, he set a new personal best recently.
:42:42. > :42:48.European under 21 finalist. He has decided to take it on, a big old
:42:49. > :42:54.item in the fun. And then Korir and Thiago Andre of Brazil. Plenty to
:42:55. > :43:05.watch out for here. We have seen Dahmani. Korir is one of only three
:43:06. > :43:27.men to have run 44 seconds at 401.43 at 800. -- 44 seconds at 400 and
:43:28. > :43:38.1.43 at 800. Manco, another US-based athlete running for Ghana. --
:43:39. > :43:46.Amankwah. Reuter Mac is still controlling it at the front. Korir
:43:47. > :43:51.begins to extricate himself. A very good solid performance from him. The
:43:52. > :43:57.Polish speaking through on the inside, Rozmys. That's one of those
:43:58. > :44:01.heats that you hate when you are an 800-metre runner. There is always
:44:02. > :44:07.one that just goes slow, and then all of a sudden it's not a normal
:44:08. > :44:15.1.44 rom-com you are running 1.47 and that gives everyone a chance.
:44:16. > :44:19.Korir is a superb talent. He's used to doing well in a heats and semis
:44:20. > :44:24.and finals, so I think he will conduct himself. Didn't do more than
:44:25. > :44:30.he had to. Didn't want to expend a more energy than he had to. And he
:44:31. > :44:35.didn't, judged it perfectly. He's not even gone into second gear as he
:44:36. > :44:41.comes down, cruising through to the front and not even bothering about
:44:42. > :44:47.the fact that Rozmys is about to sneak through and come close. He
:44:48. > :44:52.almost gets there on the line, the Polish third string athlete in Yate
:44:53. > :44:55.and metres. We are yet to see Lewandowski, still to come. But a
:44:56. > :45:04.good qualification for him and Korir is looking very strong.
:45:05. > :45:20.Look how relaxed he is. Korir safely through. The good news for Kyle
:45:21. > :45:32.Langford is still in a fastest loser spot.
:45:33. > :45:36.Thiam on the runway. Second event of the heptathlon has
:45:37. > :45:42.seen her competitor, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, go out at a height
:45:43. > :45:51.below what she is capable of. Thiam, 1. 89, first attempt. Wow, very
:45:52. > :45:56.good, very, very good indeed. She seems to get better the more
:45:57. > :46:01.important the effort is. That's the mark of a champion. Rose to the
:46:02. > :46:07.occasion in Rio. And she's come good. Settling in. She doesn't run
:46:08. > :46:13.well over the hurdles this morning. Looked a bit ragged in the first
:46:14. > :46:17.attempt. But is settling in. 1. 89, the best we have seen so far, the
:46:18. > :46:30.only athlete clear at this height. STUDIO: Thiam with a good high jump
:46:31. > :46:36.at 1. 89. Really showing the way there. Her experience counting. Her
:46:37. > :46:41.Olympic gold medal now really building up towards a fantastic
:46:42. > :46:45.climax of the competition for her. But such disappointment for Katarina
:46:46. > :46:52.Johnson-Thompson. On an event that she is world-class at, 1. 98 jumper,
:46:53. > :46:58.to go out not clearing higher than 1. 86. Huge disappointment. You can
:46:59. > :47:03.see it on her face, Denise and lost a lot of points there. She's lost a
:47:04. > :47:07.lot of points, she will be feeling sick to her core. Both myself, Jess,
:47:08. > :47:10.we have been in positions where you think oh my gosh, but you have to
:47:11. > :47:14.remember this is not only about points at this stage. It isn't. It's
:47:15. > :47:19.about battling for medals, it's still early days. I have had
:47:20. > :47:23.disasters in heptathlons where I think what is going to happen next
:47:24. > :47:28.but you have to have the capacity to keep fighting. We said about Kat, is
:47:29. > :47:31.that it's the ability to shut off after one event and treat the next
:47:32. > :47:35.like a new competition. That is going to be tested now. This is the
:47:36. > :47:39.hardest situation for her, she's gone into the high jump with it
:47:40. > :47:44.being one of her best events, hoping for it to be a high scoring event
:47:45. > :47:49.and come away with that. To compartmentalise that and move on to
:47:50. > :47:52.the next event is going to be extremely difficult. Because she's
:47:53. > :47:59.going into the shot put which is one of her weaker events. The reasoning
:48:00. > :48:02.why you would miss a height when you are confident but when it's a cold
:48:03. > :48:06.day relatively and the rain is there and you have to wait a long time, 90
:48:07. > :48:11.minutes, would the rhythm of the day, would it not be better to clear
:48:12. > :48:15.183 and get into the rhythm of the jumping than to have that time
:48:16. > :48:20.waiting? It depends on the athlete. For me you want to get a jump in and
:48:21. > :48:24.want to, if you are feeling confident and happy in your jumping,
:48:25. > :48:27.you don't want to expend too much energy and sometimes it's good to
:48:28. > :48:31.miss a few rounds and come back in at a higher height. She was jumping
:48:32. > :48:35.well in warm-up, and obviously felt confident. Again the weather's not
:48:36. > :48:39.been great. We did have a big downpower and it affects you in
:48:40. > :48:42.different ways. It's hard to say but that was her decision. She's gone on
:48:43. > :48:49.what she normally She has a plan, normally comes in at
:48:50. > :48:53.180. It's understanding the changes in the environment, sometimes you
:48:54. > :48:57.might have to make that decision and say I am feeling cold, I need to
:48:58. > :49:03.come in and you can change. You can, once you have opted to pass, well,
:49:04. > :49:07.you know in the mind that you can come back in, it's tough from here,s
:49:08. > :49:13.and this is where she needs to show her mettle. We know her throws are
:49:14. > :49:19.her weaker event. She still has 200 metres, the long juch that could be
:49:20. > :49:24.a high scoring event. -- long jump. We saw problems she had in that in
:49:25. > :49:29.Beijing. We have to hope she can mentally refocus and has more time.
:49:30. > :49:32.Yeah, she's going to have to wait now and see how Thiam performs and
:49:33. > :49:36.she's jumping well at the moment. She's going to have to sit back and
:49:37. > :49:40.gather herself and compose herself for the next two events. It's going
:49:41. > :49:44.to be tough for her. OK. Let's get back outside. It's the next heat of
:49:45. > :49:50.the men's 800 metres. Andrew is your commentator for this one.
:49:51. > :50:02.Some black clouds coming in. There is the line-up for this one.
:50:03. > :50:19.That looks rather gloomy. Bosse has been the standard-bearer
:50:20. > :50:27.for France for sometime. I might have seen lightning there! And I
:50:28. > :50:29.think I was right. Dramatic roll of thunder for Nijel Amos.
:50:30. > :50:59.I am slightly scared! The main stay of 800-metre running
:51:00. > :51:05.for years now, Adam Kszczot. He has seen his teammate just going
:51:06. > :51:09.through. So a thunder storm threatening the
:51:10. > :51:16.stadium here as we get going in the 5th of six heats in the men's 800
:51:17. > :51:20.metres. Again look out for times, as well, because Kyle Langford is till
:51:21. > :51:23.in 4th place of the fastest losers with two heats to come and six
:51:24. > :51:31.fastest losers will go through overall.
:51:32. > :51:34.Bosse creeps in alongside Amos. Amos not a pretty runner to watch but
:51:35. > :51:38.unbelievably talented 800-metre runner. As an 18-year-old he was
:51:39. > :51:41.silver-medallist in the stadium five years ago. He has had tough times
:51:42. > :51:47.since but seems to be coming back to his best. Has been racing
:51:48. > :51:52.impressively this year. Bosse behind him in contrast is finding his feet
:51:53. > :51:58.this season. He improved a bit in the Monaco Diamond League and looks
:51:59. > :52:09.in good shape now as he is tracking amiss through the first 400 metres.
:52:10. > :52:20.Another rumble of thunder. Amos is there and Bosse. Kszczot further
:52:21. > :52:28.back but is a strong finisher. Amos sitting there. Here comes Kszczot.
:52:29. > :52:31.He had to move really wide there. Now he is closing very fast. Will
:52:32. > :52:39.sit back in a little and then attack again in the home straight. And an
:52:40. > :52:54.injury there, as well. Bosse in front. Amos and here comes Adam
:52:55. > :53:04.Kszczot now. Mark English. Amos will take the victory, just ahead of
:53:05. > :53:11.Bosse. 1. 47. Again it's not quick at all. It's looking good for Kyle
:53:12. > :53:17.Langford again. But not a quick race, but well enough judged by
:53:18. > :53:26.Nigel Amos. Not a quick race and a messy race, as well. A few stumbles
:53:27. > :53:35.there. I think it was Hamada having to get into a wheelchair there.
:53:36. > :53:41.Looks like something went in his hamstring attachment. His arms
:53:42. > :53:45.swinging out, as well. He is not going to be taking further back in
:53:46. > :53:48.these championships at all. Not a good way for his championships to
:53:49. > :53:57.end. The rest of the race did continue. Bosse controlling at the
:53:58. > :54:02.front. Amos letting him do that. Adam Kszczot just doing what he
:54:03. > :54:08.needed to do, keeping his wits about him. All three of them did enough to
:54:09. > :54:13.hold off Smaili and none of the fastest losers will come from that
:54:14. > :54:19.heat. Disappointing for Mark English. He is a 1. 45 man. In a
:54:20. > :54:25.race that's not quick, so well done. He is not going to go through, but
:54:26. > :54:30.Nigel Amos, wonder if he can turn his silver into gold from the
:54:31. > :54:38.Olympics to the World Championships in this stadium. It's good for Kyle
:54:39. > :54:44.Langford because his time still leaves him in a good position to go
:54:45. > :54:49.through as one of the fastest losers.
:54:50. > :55:02.Here is a jump that happened during that race. Already had a PB in the
:55:03. > :55:10.bag with 1. 86. Third attempt. Short approach. But proved too much for
:55:11. > :55:13.the German. But a really good second event. And is very much in
:55:14. > :55:18.contention for a medal across the two days of the heptathlon. Here is
:55:19. > :55:23.the favourite, Thiam. Keeping herself warm. It has dropped in
:55:24. > :55:31.temperature. We have had rain, some sunshine. She's used to this,
:55:32. > :55:39.though. She armed herself so well in Rio. Was very much the champion in
:55:40. > :55:45.every sense as another crack of thunder rattles around the Olympic
:55:46. > :55:51.Stadium. No fouls so far. We are into the 90s. 1. 92. No athlete has
:55:52. > :55:59.attempted this yet. We are in new ground in these World Championships.
:56:00. > :56:05.Thiam clear, wow! Look at that. Pressure on and she delivers. Thiam,
:56:06. > :56:11.a clean card. Exactly what she would have wanted. She fights it hard,
:56:12. > :56:14.though. Might see her relax, if she's going to get towards two
:56:15. > :56:21.metres which she knows she is capable of, maybe will have to tidy
:56:22. > :56:31.that up a little. Lots of points going in the bag.
:56:32. > :56:36.Well, the only other athlete who is still involved, Katarina
:56:37. > :56:44.Johnson-Thompson went out at the previous height, in case you didn't
:56:45. > :56:47.see it, and had a best of 1. 80, the Cuban Rodriguez, maybe a top ten
:56:48. > :56:52.finisher overall, this is a strong event for her. She has a lifetime
:56:53. > :57:00.best already at the previous height. So in new ground.
:57:01. > :57:09.Good support from Thiam watching on. Oh, she looked well over that. Came
:57:10. > :57:18.down on it. So Rodriguez looking good. Two more attempts to add that
:57:19. > :57:22.tally to her score. Just the shot and the 200 metres to come today, a
:57:23. > :57:29.busy day, a long day. The athletes have been out nearly two hours now
:57:30. > :57:36.just for this second event, the high jump. Nafi Thiam going into the
:57:37. > :57:44.lead, as expected. As that high jump and the heptathlon
:57:45. > :57:47.draws eventually to a conclusion, although Thiam was going to go
:57:48. > :57:53.higher, obviously, let's do a result of heat five before we go to the
:57:54. > :58:00.final heat. And set up the situation for the fastest losers, Andrew.
:58:01. > :58:08.Yeah, again not the quickest as Paula was saying, messy from all
:58:09. > :58:13.concerned. Those times leave Kyle Langford still in a decent position,
:58:14. > :58:20.although a strongish heat to come. It was a very strong last heat but
:58:21. > :58:28.it's been made easier, but the big news here is that the Kenyan doesn't
:58:29. > :58:33.start, he was overlooked, finished third in the trials and was annoyed
:58:34. > :58:39.and posted on Facebook about it in a way that criticises the federation.
:58:40. > :58:44.He was advanced into the event because of a withdrawal but he is
:58:45. > :58:58.now not starting, I don't know what is going on so Saruni not here.
:58:59. > :59:09.Brazier, I mentioned earlier. All men who would normally finish ahead
:59:10. > :59:14.of Learmonth. But this guy can produce a big performance. He did it
:59:15. > :59:19.at the British trials, finished second and then at the Diamond
:59:20. > :59:22.League produced 1. 45 that guaranteed him selection. He thought
:59:23. > :59:25.he wouldn't be able to do that then. Hats off to him. Going to be
:59:26. > :59:37.interesting to see what he can do here. I wonder if he knows 1. 1.46.
:59:38. > :59:43.38 would be good enough. Not in the top three here. You wouldn't expect
:59:44. > :59:52.him to be. But this man, Donovan Brazier, the best talent for me to
:59:53. > :00:03.come out of America at 800-metre, for a long time.
:00:04. > :00:09.Mohammed Aman, a former world champion, now coached by Mark
:00:10. > :00:13.Roland, based in the US, two-time world indoor champion. Not in that
:00:14. > :00:15.sort of form these days but he is improving slightly. And will be a
:00:16. > :00:39.threat here. Watch out for Donavan Brazier, a
:00:40. > :00:43.very good American talent. It's not normal for Guy Learmonth to take it
:00:44. > :00:49.out and make good pace, but anything decent, just run around 52 for the
:00:50. > :00:53.first lap and give yourself a chance of 1.45, but I have horrible feeling
:00:54. > :01:01.it could be slow. Brazier out in front. He is stretching it out. A
:01:02. > :01:06.bit surprised to see that, Paula? Looking down the list I was thinking
:01:07. > :01:11.who was likely to take it out, definitely not Brazier, Lewandowski
:01:12. > :01:14.and Amel Tuka, but Donavan Brazier has taken it on and is doing Guy
:01:15. > :01:22.Learmonth a favour, stretching it out and making it quick. Learmonth,
:01:23. > :01:29.has a lovely action. 51.89 through the first 400. Brazier of the United
:01:30. > :01:40.States, Guy Learmonth tucked in nicely in second. Danger line
:01:41. > :01:47.further back with Amel Tuka, Aman and Lewandowski. Brazier is making
:01:48. > :01:51.this a quick heat. The top three will go through here. Guy Learmonth
:01:52. > :01:57.doing a great job and stop just looking at the screen. The danger is
:01:58. > :02:03.still five metres behind. Brazier is there. Learmonth has to stay strong.
:02:04. > :02:09.The attack will come. Amel Tuka is chasing. Lewandowski and Aman, has
:02:10. > :02:15.to stay in the top three. Learmonth will hang on to third. Amel Tuka
:02:16. > :02:21.finishes quickly as well. Well done to Guy Learmonth. And the difference
:02:22. > :02:25.between him and Kyle Langford is that he got up there early. They
:02:26. > :02:30.were already quicker than him in the home straight but he was ahead, in a
:02:31. > :02:35.great position, following Brazier. Stayed strong in the home straight.
:02:36. > :02:39.Great running from Brazier. Now let's start looking at the clock for
:02:40. > :02:49.these qualifiers. Will his team-mates join him in the semis? We
:02:50. > :02:59.have to look at the line. He threw himself at it. I think it's coming
:03:00. > :03:05.out at 1:46.60. I don't want to say too soon but I think Langford is
:03:06. > :03:09.through. A really strong race by Guy Learmonth. He had it laid out on a
:03:10. > :03:13.little bit of a plate for him by Donavan Brazier, how he took the
:03:14. > :03:23.race on and made the pace quick. But that race, at no point did he panic.
:03:24. > :03:28.He used the screens to check what was coming behind him. The person
:03:29. > :03:31.who misjudged the race was Lewandowski, who left himself with
:03:32. > :03:36.far too much work to do in the home straight. Amel Tuka hasn't been as
:03:37. > :03:41.in good shape this year but Lewandowski was too far back with
:03:42. > :03:45.250 metres to go to run like that. If he runs like that in the next
:03:46. > :03:47.end, he will not progress to the final. A great run from Guy
:03:48. > :03:56.Learmonth. What a fantastic performance. It was
:03:57. > :04:04.such a stacked field as well. To go through the way you did. A few
:04:05. > :04:08.people were writing me off in big races. I know I can always raise my
:04:09. > :04:13.game when I need to. The hardest part for me is just getting to this
:04:14. > :04:18.Championships. Home games against, I love it and I will always run well.
:04:19. > :04:22.I'm looking forward to the semifinal tomorrow. Steve Cram pointed out in
:04:23. > :04:25.commentary that it is key when a pace picks up you are in the mix at
:04:26. > :04:29.the end. Kyle Langford didn't do that earlier and you were able to do
:04:30. > :04:34.it. Exactly, the last thing I wanted to do was get caught off the guard.
:04:35. > :04:37.I wanted to go with pace and keep hanging in. I did that and I'm
:04:38. > :04:43.happy. Well done and we wish you well for the semi.
:04:44. > :04:57.Nafi Thiam at 1.9 five. First attempt, and she's got that as well!
:04:58. > :05:04.That's a brilliant effort. In what have been fairly testing conditions.
:05:05. > :05:09.Nafi Thiam getting close to a lifetime best. 1.95, stretching the
:05:10. > :05:15.lead. She has already gone into the lead with her previous clearance of
:05:16. > :05:22.1.92. Only two events into the seven, but that extends it. A huge
:05:23. > :05:24.Branco for Nafi Thiam, the hijab, and she's making the most of it. --
:05:25. > :05:44.a huge banker. -- the high jump. Set a Cuban record in Rio, the
:05:45. > :05:49.22-year-old. Best look at that. Look at the celebration, that's what it
:05:50. > :05:57.means to her. She knows, she knows the significance of that. With
:05:58. > :05:59.athletes faltering. We have seen the Latvian go out, Kathryn Johnson
:06:00. > :06:08.Thompson has also faltered in the high jump. Might be thinking of a
:06:09. > :06:18.rostrum finish, Martinez. Rodriguez goes at 1.95. She is jumping well,
:06:19. > :06:24.but not on that occasion. 1.95 might prove to be too much. But the young
:06:25. > :06:27.Cuban is looking really good, it has to be said. Looking across her
:06:28. > :06:34.lifetime best, she came into this with a lifetime best of 1.87 and now
:06:35. > :06:35.she's attempting 1.95. It takes a bit of positive thinking, I would
:06:36. > :06:46.imagine. STUDIO: It's turning into a
:06:47. > :06:52.world-class high jump competition, just not with one of the competitors
:06:53. > :06:55.we as British athletics fans, and unashamedly so today, hoped would be
:06:56. > :06:58.there. But we have to celebrate these performances because Nafi
:06:59. > :07:06.Thiam is producing the goods when it counts. She had a wobbly start when
:07:07. > :07:12.it started by her standards, but she's out there now putting in some
:07:13. > :07:16.fantastic points on her total. Her last attempt to shaky, but she
:07:17. > :07:21.cleared it and she's looking strong out there. This is her clearing 1.9
:07:22. > :07:31.five. It's getting close to her clear in her personal best. With
:07:32. > :07:34.her, it's a strong event, but she's really relaxed. As Tony has
:07:35. > :07:40.highlighted in commentary, is not the most majestic looking run-up.
:07:41. > :07:44.She's not tidy over the bar, but she's effective. It's dynamic and
:07:45. > :07:49.she works off the floor really hard. She snakes over the bar. By any
:07:50. > :08:00.means necessary, the points don't lie. 1.95, a clean sheet. It's good
:08:01. > :08:04.jumping. She takes those short strides as she comes in, like Fred
:08:05. > :08:09.Flintstone with his bowling ball. But she elevates really well and
:08:10. > :08:18.gets up. We just heard some cheering... I think Rodriguez has
:08:19. > :08:27.just gone clear at 1.98... 95? I think it would be 95. We will have a
:08:28. > :08:31.look at that in a second. We were hoping for a head to head in the
:08:32. > :08:40.high jump. It's Rodriguez and Nafi Thiam. Let's see Rodriguez at 1.95.
:08:41. > :08:48.Denise, talk us through her technique... COMMENTATOR: Rodriguez
:08:49. > :08:53.looking really solid here. This really helps Nafi Thiam. We have a
:08:54. > :08:57.head to head from an athlete we didn't expect. She is in new
:08:58. > :09:05.territory. The coaches are going absolutely crazy. 1.95 for the
:09:06. > :09:13.Cuban. A massive lifetime best, equalling the championship best of
:09:14. > :09:23.Karol Linetty what -- Carolina coughed. Rodriguez, equalling what
:09:24. > :09:30.Nafi Thiam, the greatest ever high jumper in her talent, has done. This
:09:31. > :09:34.really helps Nafi Thiam, it slows down and she doesn't have to follow
:09:35. > :09:38.herself into the next heights. A little bit of time, put the
:09:39. > :09:45.tracksuit on and compose herself. The bar will be raised and the next
:09:46. > :09:48.attempt will be at 1.98 to match last year's clearance for Nafi
:09:49. > :09:55.Thiam. STUDIO: Smiling, looking relaxed and ready to go. We will get
:09:56. > :10:01.back out there when Nafi Thiam headset. We will sadly see Katarina
:10:02. > :10:09.Johnson-Thompson go out, failing at 1.8 six. She cleared 1.8, opted not
:10:10. > :10:14.to go at 1.8 three. Talk us through this, Jess. Is something I did a lot
:10:15. > :10:18.in my career, backing into the bar. She did you get to clear it.
:10:19. > :10:23.Anticipating too much, turning her shoulders into the bar and trying to
:10:24. > :10:29.clear before she had the hiked. Her second attempt was a lot better. She
:10:30. > :10:34.cleared it with a really good clearance. She doesn't get close to
:10:35. > :10:39.clearing that. She has waited 90 minutes between the 1.8, missing
:10:40. > :10:47.1.83, having to get herself wonder began. Should be thinking this is
:10:48. > :10:52.bread-and-butter for her, Tony? See that little stutter step. What they
:10:53. > :10:57.have done is soft on the curve. Her curve now goes further out from the
:10:58. > :11:01.bar. The feet tickled them off. By softening the curve she is more
:11:02. > :11:04.stuck up, carrying more speed across the feet and travelling along the
:11:05. > :11:10.bar. You don't have time to rotate down. We can head back out there
:11:11. > :11:16.with Steve Backley for Nafi Thiam's attempt at 1.98. COMMENTATOR: A
:11:17. > :11:21.slightly smaller crowd than we had earlier but still good support for
:11:22. > :11:28.the Belgian, Nafi Thiam. This is to match her lifetime best. Too much.
:11:29. > :11:32.Perhaps a bit of a sighter. Interesting to see another look at
:11:33. > :11:38.this. Looks like she might have got too close, a common error. Might
:11:39. > :11:42.have got crowded. Funny when the bias towards these heights, things
:11:43. > :11:50.change. Hard to tell from that angle. Didn't see enough of it.
:11:51. > :11:55.Interesting to here from the guys in the studio. Nafi Thiam trying to
:11:56. > :11:59.make the technical adjustments. She will have two more attempts. This is
:12:00. > :12:03.where it plays into her favour to have another competitor involved. We
:12:04. > :12:07.were hoping it might be Katarina Johnson-Thompson, but it's Rodriguez
:12:08. > :12:16.of Cuba, who I think might have retired having got clear of 1.95. So
:12:17. > :12:23.Nafi Thiam will be next up to follow herself and have the second attempt
:12:24. > :12:29.at 1.98. Needs to compose now and make those adjustments, lock them
:12:30. > :12:32.in. We know she is capable, she knows she is capable. She will have
:12:33. > :12:38.a little pause before her second attempt. STUDIO: Well Nafi Thiam
:12:39. > :12:43.collector Saban gets ready for the second attempt at 1.98, we can see
:12:44. > :12:51.Katarina Johnson-Thompson's third attempt at 1.80. She cleared this
:12:52. > :12:59.fight at 14, she has been taking this for 14 years. This is normally
:13:00. > :13:05.so straightforward, Denise? Her third attempt at 1.86. Again we see
:13:06. > :13:09.the skip at the take-off. I think she was too close and should have
:13:10. > :13:15.stayed away. Tony has talked about the technique of high jump, you have
:13:16. > :13:22.to fight the resistance of taking off before you jump. You have to try
:13:23. > :13:28.to float, feel hanged time over the bar, float over, and she didn't do
:13:29. > :13:32.that. That kind of hanged time saw Nafi Thiam get to this position. She
:13:33. > :13:37.at 1.9 eight. Steve Backley can this. COMMENTATOR: Denise Lewis says
:13:38. > :13:48.air time. She has to float. Nafi Thiam with her second attempt
:13:49. > :13:53.at 1.98 and that was a better attempt, but still a fair way off.
:13:54. > :13:57.She maybe needs the impetus of a third attempt, that bit of spice to
:13:58. > :14:02.know it's your last chance to put a fire into the take-off. It's gone a
:14:03. > :14:10.little bit flat for her. But one last attempt for Nafi Thiam.
:14:11. > :14:16.STUDIO: What a competitor she is. Like the rest of the field, she
:14:17. > :14:20.still has five more events to go after this, but she wants to push
:14:21. > :14:28.yourself to a PB and get herself in a really great mindset as she moves
:14:29. > :14:31.through the day, Jess? If she moves on knowing she has attempted in
:14:32. > :14:35.clear that height successfully, if she feels she can do that again,
:14:36. > :14:39.there's no point in stopping now. If you have one more attempt, you go
:14:40. > :14:43.for it and try to accumulate as many points as you can. Talking about the
:14:44. > :14:48.mental side of Johnson-Thompson's day. She looked quite pleased with
:14:49. > :14:52.herself after the hurdles, solid start, looking happy enough. Going
:14:53. > :14:56.into the high jump, an event where she is world-class. She has entered
:14:57. > :15:06.the individual competition, as has Nafi Thiam. A long way between the
:15:07. > :15:09.first clearance and 1.86, lying down and relaxing, we don't normally see
:15:10. > :15:10.those shots, but it might happen all the time. What is going on in their
:15:11. > :15:20.mind at that point It is important to visualise what
:15:21. > :15:22.you have to do, not getting too involved with what's happening in
:15:23. > :15:26.the stadium, because that can be draining when you are watching
:15:27. > :15:30.competitors run around. She would have been thinking about technique
:15:31. > :15:35.and relaxation. When it's time to go, you have to get yourself in the
:15:36. > :15:39.moment, dynamic and active and I think she did look a bit soft, she
:15:40. > :15:44.didn't seem to have the fire in her legs for some reason. She's got the
:15:45. > :15:48.ankle strapping on but I don't think that really impacted her. There was
:15:49. > :15:52.total and utter disbelief at this point because any day of the week
:15:53. > :15:58.Katarina Johnson-Thompson can get over 1. 86. She can do it off short
:15:59. > :16:03.approach. Her coaches won't have seen this. The 1. 89 was in Beijing
:16:04. > :16:08.and she almost had to jump off one foot to clear the bar because she
:16:09. > :16:15.was on her third athement. That's right, it was. -- third attempt.
:16:16. > :16:23.None of the two run-ups were the same.
:16:24. > :16:31.COMMENTATOR: Nafi Thiam. Too close. Leaned in. Wasn't to be. But a very
:16:32. > :16:43.good effort in going clear at 1. 95. Masses of points. And the rest of
:16:44. > :16:47.the world, other than Rodriguez of Cuba, faltered somewhat. Thiam going
:16:48. > :16:59.well after two events. Way out in front. Maybe would have wanted a bit
:17:00. > :17:06.more. Scored over 7,000 points. The coach watching on. But Thiam, well,
:17:07. > :17:10.it's all about medals here at the World Championships, she has that
:17:11. > :17:16.high score and has broken through 7,000 points. Her heptathlon is
:17:17. > :17:25.going very well indeed after two events.
:17:26. > :17:29.STUDIO: Nafi Thiam doing herself no harm there in terms of the
:17:30. > :17:34.standings. We will look at those right now. Steve, talk us through
:17:35. > :17:41.those. Yeah, we can see the points. 1171,
:17:42. > :17:48.Thiam and Rodriguez. You can see the difference with every height. You
:17:49. > :17:54.reduce in points. Way down here, as we see below the 1,000 points.
:17:55. > :18:00.200 points down for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Tony said she can
:18:01. > :18:03.still get a medal, she has to believe, but it's about accumulating
:18:04. > :18:08.points and that's what Thiam is so good at. These are just the points
:18:09. > :18:19.for the second event. We add them to the hurdles, the
:18:20. > :18:26.first event from earlier this morning and two 7ths of our way
:18:27. > :18:29.through the heptathlon, the shot is the first event of the second
:18:30. > :18:44.session - the first session set. Thiam ahead of Rodriguez and Schafer
:18:45. > :18:49.in third. Katarina Johnson-Thompson just losing ground there. Needs a
:18:50. > :19:00.big long jump tomorrow morning. Only two events and a lot of
:19:01. > :19:03.athletics to come for these hepathletes.
:19:04. > :19:08.STUDIO: Now it's about how she gets ready mentally and on to tomorrow.
:19:09. > :19:16.This is a big test. It has been in the past, the mental
:19:17. > :19:20.side, this is going to test her in a different way than last year. She's
:19:21. > :19:25.going to have to gather herself and make sure she comes back strong for
:19:26. > :19:29.the shot put and she has a great 200 so she can hopefully run a strong
:19:30. > :19:34.time there. Like Tony said, it's not over yet. We still have five more
:19:35. > :19:38.events to go. It's still quite open for the medals. Thiam is doing
:19:39. > :19:44.incredibly well and she's bang on for a gold. Schafer is looking good
:19:45. > :19:48.for silver but the bronze is still open. It's going to be a scrap. It
:19:49. > :19:52.will be, definitely. She will have to dig deep and find something
:19:53. > :19:57.inside herself she's not managed to do before. Let's not underestimate
:19:58. > :20:03.the challenge. She's going from a really good event, a strong event,
:20:04. > :20:06.that's gone badly, going into an event that in hasn't gone well, that
:20:07. > :20:11.takes a lot of fight. This is where we will see the character of
:20:12. > :20:14.Katarina Johnson-Thompson, whether she has learned to deal with
:20:15. > :20:16.disappointment within the heptathlon and manufacture on very quickly
:20:17. > :20:20.because she's going to need it tonight. -- and move on. I asked you
:20:21. > :20:24.if you had a bad high jump and gone on to do well and Denise said, the
:20:25. > :20:28.Olympics, when I won gold, she didn't say when I won gold, but I
:20:29. > :20:34.knew what she meant. You had a bad high jump that day. I had a disaster
:20:35. > :20:37.for me in the high jump. I had been injured as everyone knows, it's well
:20:38. > :20:42.documented. But I still believed I could jump well. You need to be over
:20:43. > :20:48.the 80s, to have a realistic fighting chance. I didn't do it. My
:20:49. > :20:53.attitude into the shot put and it was a good event for me, I was going
:20:54. > :20:56.to transform myself into one of the best shot putters in the heptathlon
:20:57. > :21:01.competition. That mindset has to be strong. Yes, it can be done. It's
:21:02. > :21:07.not over yet. She's still in 5th place. Let's look, Tony, give us a
:21:08. > :21:13.comment on this. This is her PBs. We are talking about emotional sides
:21:14. > :21:22.and things like that. Let's take the emotion out and look at the logic.
:21:23. > :21:30.She is still capable of 65 or 66 at this point. Rodriguez has moved up
:21:31. > :21:35.but still five events to go. So, she probably isn't going to get a huge
:21:36. > :21:41.lot more points out of today. I think the long jump, the javelin and
:21:42. > :21:49.the 800 tomorrow are places she can pick up the slack, get over 6600 and
:21:50. > :21:53.put herself in a frame for a medal. Schafer can be erratic. You can
:21:54. > :21:57.still put people under pressure. You are still in there. Let's look at
:21:58. > :22:01.the logic, that's what I would do as a coach. It's gone, this is what we
:22:02. > :22:06.need to do. Use the crowd and the energy here. There was so much
:22:07. > :22:10.support for her here today. Once she had gone out of the high jump, a few
:22:11. > :22:13.people went for an early lunch. They were hoping for a big battle between
:22:14. > :22:22.those two. This stadium is full of 60,000
:22:23. > :22:26.people, every single one is a Katarina Johnson-Thompson fan, use
:22:27. > :22:29.that energy if you want. Have the logic, understand what performances
:22:30. > :22:33.you need to put together. This isn't over. It's a seven-event
:22:34. > :22:36.competition, not two events. Absolutely, it's not about points at
:22:37. > :22:40.this stage. It's about medals. We can talk about the crowd and using
:22:41. > :22:45.that to your advantage, but it has to be about her character now. It
:22:46. > :22:49.has to be about her fight and what she believes is possible. If she
:22:50. > :22:58.hangs on to the baggage of what's happened, she's going to compromise
:22:59. > :23:02.the rest of her help tat lan. -- heptathlon. What advice would you
:23:03. > :23:08.give her Step back, put it to one side and go into the shot put and
:23:09. > :23:13.fight for it. We are looking at it as if all the other athletes will
:23:14. > :23:18.perform brilliantly in every event, that might not be the case. That
:23:19. > :23:23.puts Kat back in contention Father a medal. I would tell her to get
:23:24. > :23:27.herself together, take time and come out strong for this evening. Taking
:23:28. > :23:33.you back to last night, what a night we had here in this stadium on day
:23:34. > :23:39.one. Mo Farah's 10,000 metre victory was special. An incredible race.
:23:40. > :23:42.Adding to his global haul making it ten medals now, ten golds, of
:23:43. > :23:55.course. The morning after the night before who do you really want to
:23:56. > :24:07.talk -- Brendan Foster, of course, but let's remind you how he did it.
:24:08. > :24:18.In front of his home crowd in the city he knows so well, the city that
:24:19. > :24:27.he loves. The track that set him on this brilliant journey. It's never
:24:28. > :24:39.been as quick as this. It's never been as hard as this. This is
:24:40. > :24:46.phenomenal racing. The British best. He is a one man world superpower!
:24:47. > :24:59.It's gold for Farah! Congratulations. That was a
:25:00. > :25:03.fantastic performance last night. It was a pleasure to be there. Early
:25:04. > :25:06.part of the race, it's going reasonably quickly. You are kind of
:25:07. > :25:09.guessing there was going to be pace-making, did you, because you
:25:10. > :25:13.were close, you normally go to the back. Yes, I was pretty close this
:25:14. > :25:15.year, I knew something was going to happen because the last ten years
:25:16. > :25:20.they've been saying how they're going to beat me and what they need
:25:21. > :25:25.to do. They never follow. Now fair play to them, they followed this
:25:26. > :25:29.year and made it one of the toughest championships of my career. I
:25:30. > :25:36.suppose you concentrate on running lap after lap and you were busy
:25:37. > :25:39.doing this. I am telling people, I have the whole nation behind me,
:25:40. > :25:43.what do you have to help me out. 3,000 to go, were you beginning to
:25:44. > :25:49.hurt then? I was hurting. 3,000 metres I was hurting, I was tired
:25:50. > :25:53.and there was a lot of stuff, a lot of elbows, physically that race was
:25:54. > :25:57.a bit crazy. At which point, when you went to the front, a couple of
:25:58. > :26:02.laps to go, that was going to be your race then? That was going to be
:26:03. > :26:07.my race. 800 metres to go, nearly got a couple of trips, from that
:26:08. > :26:10.point I was like, they are not going fast enough to beat me, try to just
:26:11. > :26:13.control it where you feel good and where you have something left for
:26:14. > :26:20.the last lap and go for it, that was always my plan. When you crossed the
:26:21. > :26:25.line, tell us. It was beautiful, I really enjoyed it. That one moment
:26:26. > :26:29.can't be forgotten. It won't be forgotten, Mo, it was a great race.
:26:30. > :26:32.No matter what, a big race in a few days' time? If I believe enough,
:26:33. > :26:39.it's possible. Do you believe it enough? Yeah. Physically are you OK?
:26:40. > :26:44.You have a few scratches, wounds. A few bruises, have to take care of
:26:45. > :26:49.it, I have to rest and get ready and whatever happens, happens, it's a
:26:50. > :26:56.new race. Nice specs by the way, Mo Farah!
:26:57. > :27:05.Loving those! Tonight it's another legend of the sport, THE legend of
:27:06. > :27:13.the sport. Usain Bolt to take centre stage.
:27:14. > :27:18.You don't want to miss that. Join us for that this evening. A quick recap
:27:19. > :27:24.on things that happened here. We have put the heptathlon to bed for
:27:25. > :27:28.now. The 80 metres, the British men, all making it through -- 800.
:27:29. > :27:32.Langford was in the first of the British men to run and came through
:27:33. > :27:38.as a fastest loser. Well done to them. Sophie Hitchin, with that
:27:39. > :27:46.fantastic 73. 05 making it through in the hammer. Easily, one throw,
:27:47. > :27:50.job done. Great to see her. I am optimistic for her in the final.
:27:51. > :27:55.Good morning's action, long enough for you? Everyone ready for lunch? I
:27:56. > :27:59.want you all back here after the afternoon nap, fresh and ready to
:28:00. > :28:03.go. 6. 30pm we will be back here on BBC One. Tonight really is going to
:28:04. > :28:07.be an incredible evening. A super Saturday to beat them all. Usain
:28:08. > :28:11.Bolt appearing on the track in a major championship for the very last
:28:12. > :28:54.time. We know you want to join us, see you at 6. 30 on BBC One.
:28:55. > :28:56.It's gold for Usain Bolt! He has done it again! A new world record.
