:00:21. > :00:33.This is world domination! Michael Johnson, storming away! This is

:00:34. > :00:41.history in the making! Jessica Ennis-Hill is back on top of the

:00:42. > :00:45.world. This is a massive world record. The champion of the world!

:00:46. > :01:05.Usain Bolt! He has saved his title! He might

:01:06. > :01:17.even save his sport! The champion becomes a legend.

:01:18. > :01:49.It is Gatlin, Gatlin winning it, right on the death. It was not to

:01:50. > :01:57.be. This is sport, there are no guarantees. There isn't always a

:01:58. > :02:08.happy ending. His lane is now empty. And so depends. -- so it ends. Last

:02:09. > :02:14.night 's 100 metres final showcase the unpredictable nature of sport,

:02:15. > :02:19.but track and field moves on and be focused tonight shifts onto the

:02:20. > :02:22.Women's 100 metres and the Heptathlon 800 metres race, who

:02:23. > :02:30.better to talk about this than Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill. The feeling you

:02:31. > :02:40.get before competing... It is hard to describe. A mixture of nerves,

:02:41. > :02:48.adrenaline, anticipation. There is nothing you want more to perform

:02:49. > :02:56.when it counts. He is a one-man world superpower. To come away with

:02:57. > :03:01.the medal you have dreamt of. But there are no guarantees. This is

:03:02. > :03:10.sport, there isn't always a happy ending. When the pressure is

:03:11. > :03:19.building, one mistake can cost you. That is a massive disappointment.

:03:20. > :03:30.You need absolute focus. Look at that! I will never forget the

:03:31. > :03:36.staging. The atmosphere. Everybody on their feet. Five years ago, at

:03:37. > :03:46.the Olympics. Tonight, as the women take centre stage in the very same

:03:47. > :03:59.arena. She edges away from the rest. This will be their chance. To rise

:04:00. > :04:02.to the occasion. The world Athletics Championship enters the third night

:04:03. > :04:08.and the fastest woman in the world will be crowned the best all-round

:04:09. > :04:15.track and field athlete and also the men's 800 metres medal will be

:04:16. > :04:23.awarded. We have had so many talking points, drama and magical moments,

:04:24. > :04:29.these World Championships already are creating headlines. Joining me

:04:30. > :04:34.in the studio, after a marathon day, Steve Cram. Denise and Michael

:04:35. > :04:46.alongside and right now, Jess Ennis, she has just come into the stadium

:04:47. > :04:54.to receive gold-medal upgrade from debut, she was the silver-medallist

:04:55. > :05:01.behind the Russian. And we can hear the role of the crowd once again in

:05:02. > :05:08.this stadium. She has been looking forward to this, for her, this is

:05:09. > :05:16.one of many gold medals. But still, she gets her moment, she gets the

:05:17. > :05:22.moment to come home. For me, this is her arena, the crowd remember that

:05:23. > :05:28.night so fondly and this warning of a medal is just rewards for that

:05:29. > :05:38.purple patch she was in at that time. The winner in Berlin. She went

:05:39. > :05:46.on to win the worlds, the Europeans and then this, fantastic. We can

:05:47. > :05:56.listen to the crowd appreciating her as she steps on to the rostrum. The

:05:57. > :05:59.gold-medallist, representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland...

:06:00. > :06:14.Jessica Ennis-Hill. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:06:15. > :06:22.Jessica is due to have her second baby in one month and the lady who

:06:23. > :06:31.should be filling the bronze podium, from podium, is not here because she

:06:32. > :06:39.is also about to give birth! They all competed in 2011. Jessica Ennis

:06:40. > :06:45.went on to take the title in Beijing and two years later after the birth

:06:46. > :06:46.of her son... Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of Great Britain

:06:47. > :07:39.and Northern Ireland. NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS.

:07:40. > :07:43.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Her coach, Tony, who works as part

:07:44. > :07:50.of the commentary team, he was the coach at the time as well, and he is

:07:51. > :08:02.proudly clapping. Very emotional, Jessica. Seeing a woman eight months

:08:03. > :08:09.pregnant standing to receive medal! This is a magical moment. We have

:08:10. > :08:16.said this, it is great for her. I hope we do not have too many more of

:08:17. > :08:27.these, I suspect a few of them but let us share in the moment, this is

:08:28. > :08:29.one for the scrapbook. And her three-year-old son is here, he will

:08:30. > :08:39.be watching and cheering, very proud. He won't know what is going

:08:40. > :08:45.on! We will have in the studio later on. And apparently, she will present

:08:46. > :08:54.the medals the ceiling for the Heptathlon. Apparently, she is not,

:08:55. > :09:00.things change fast around your! That was the 100 metres men's race and

:09:01. > :09:04.that was won by Justin Gatlin and we have had all kinds of reaction and

:09:05. > :09:13.debates and one of the central themes today is the right to boo and

:09:14. > :09:18.whether people should be allowed to boo for people who have been given

:09:19. > :09:22.the right to compete? There was mixed opinion and whether silence

:09:23. > :09:29.would be the best way to show they are upset with his participation?

:09:30. > :09:33.They definitely have the right to boo, they have bought the ticket,

:09:34. > :09:38.they are coming to watch personalities. We are here because

:09:39. > :09:41.of public opinion, we would not be covering this of the public did not

:09:42. > :09:46.like athletics and they have the right to say what they like and do

:09:47. > :09:53.not like. I have never seen anything like that before. I have heard some

:09:54. > :10:00.ripples of boos before. Remember Italy? This might be only thing but

:10:01. > :10:08.it may happen a lot more, I do not know. He did nothing wrong. Let us

:10:09. > :10:18.be clear. That is even worse, in the middle of the competition. Is it

:10:19. > :10:24.right? To boo? Gatlin, he has become, I said the lightning rod,

:10:25. > :10:29.for everything bad is bad about our sport, particularly about drugs. It

:10:30. > :10:34.is not his fault but in the 100 metres against Usain Bolt, he has

:10:35. > :10:38.had the headlines, under the spotlight and that is where it

:10:39. > :10:44.gravitates towards. Of course, the guys have said, people came here for

:10:45. > :10:51.a party last night and the man who took that away from the crowd was

:10:52. > :10:58.the man... They showed him that not only did we not like you before, you

:10:59. > :11:03.have spoiled our party. People were deflated, a little bit down. And the

:11:04. > :11:09.man who had taken that away is the man who has been painted as the

:11:10. > :11:16.villain. Should people boo everybody who has lined up your previous drug

:11:17. > :11:22.offences? Does that tell the governing body that we were the

:11:23. > :11:26.paying public and we do not want to see this? That is one way of looking

:11:27. > :11:31.at it, I have always been very proud of our sport and how people express

:11:32. > :11:37.themselves and we have to have this debate because it isn't comfortable,

:11:38. > :11:43.the drugs is not what we want to see in the sport but that is not what we

:11:44. > :11:48.want. I don't think people know the facts, it is complicated but that is

:11:49. > :11:54.the heart of the matter. To a lot of people the result was unpalatable

:11:55. > :12:03.and opinion is divided, we can get a flavour of how this has been

:12:04. > :12:09.reported around the world. People came to see Usain Bolt. He is a

:12:10. > :12:21.legend. He needs no introduction. Bolt is ready.

:12:22. > :12:33.He gets a pretty good start. Bolt is not going to catch him. Here he

:12:34. > :12:42.comes. Gatlin wins. It is Gatlin, right on the death, he steals it.

:12:43. > :12:47.The people who love me, they are cheering for me, the countrymen are

:12:48. > :12:55.cheering and that is what I will focus on. It was rough, it was

:12:56. > :13:00.banned down, I will take it like any other championship. I did my best.

:13:01. > :13:05.We have rivalry on the track and throughout the years, but we will

:13:06. > :13:12.joke and have a good time, he said congratulations, and you do not

:13:13. > :13:17.deserve all of these boos. People were shocked that Usain Bolt lost

:13:18. > :13:20.and understandably so. No matter the kind of form he has demonstrated

:13:21. > :13:28.early season, he always pulls it out. We were surprised because we

:13:29. > :13:33.hoped that Bolt would win in his finale and if any American would

:13:34. > :13:39.beat him, we thought it would be Coleman, he has had a better year

:13:40. > :13:45.than Gatlin. For the sport, if Usain Bolt lost, it would have been better

:13:46. > :13:51.if Coleman was a well, this young kid who knocks out the heavyweight

:13:52. > :13:56.and we have this 35-year-old, with the tarnished reputation and the

:13:57. > :14:01.wider public just think, no, this drugs cheat has beaten the greatest

:14:02. > :14:05.sprinter and show man in sporting history. Why would I want to watch

:14:06. > :14:12.this? He gets a mixed reaction from people, they think he has failed

:14:13. > :14:19.twice and has been suspended for four ears, people will say, this is

:14:20. > :14:22.Gatlin, but he is playing on a level field, he is extensively tested.

:14:23. > :14:29.There would have been other athletes in their sport who have cheated and

:14:30. > :14:34.competed last night, but this is where the sport has been for a

:14:35. > :14:40.while, it is simplistic to paint Gatlin as purely the bad guy because

:14:41. > :14:46.it is more complicated than that. I am hardly going to tell you the

:14:47. > :14:51.logistic that somebody who has served two bands in the sport will

:14:52. > :14:58.walk away with one of our glittering prizes but he is eligible to be her,

:14:59. > :15:02.we have attempted and we did attempt a lifetime ban under these

:15:03. > :15:08.circumstances and we lost that. In life you pay your bills and you

:15:09. > :15:13.should be given the opportunity to come back and do your best. It is

:15:14. > :15:16.not perfect but he has been sanctioned twice for doping and as

:15:17. > :15:20.the champion but you cannot complain.

:15:21. > :15:27.He is never going to do this again, he is 35 years old. And with the

:15:28. > :15:33.extensive testing going on now, at least we hope, it is probably not a

:15:34. > :15:38.long-term problem, it is just going to be the headline in a story for

:15:39. > :15:44.the next couple of weeks. I think Gatlin's story is good

:15:45. > :15:47.because you fall, you get up and you prove yourself. As he said last

:15:48. > :15:53.night, it was cracked Matic, he I have won but it was less about

:15:54. > :16:00.beating Bolt, it is his night. And you must give him credit for that.

:16:01. > :16:04.-- it was dramatic. There are no guarantees, there is not always a

:16:05. > :16:08.happy ending. Is this appetite we have talked

:16:09. > :16:12.about to find a villain, and we were part of that narrative going back to

:16:13. > :16:17.2015, as guilty as anybody else, the media went for him especially in

:16:18. > :16:22.this country, is that indicative of this modern malaise where people

:16:23. > :16:25.want something quick? A political solution, a headline that explain

:16:26. > :16:31.something without digging deep into stories. Well, I think what we are

:16:32. > :16:37.seeing here is very reminiscent of a political arena over the last year.

:16:38. > :16:43.People are frustrated and disappointed. They are disappointed

:16:44. > :16:48.in our tactics because of the doping going on with the Russian situation.

:16:49. > :16:56.So many athletes testing positive. They want to believe what they see.

:16:57. > :17:01.When we give them a villain and somebody they can pin that on, it

:17:02. > :17:08.feels good to boo that person. The problem is, it does nothing to solve

:17:09. > :17:12.the issue, to rectify the issue. And later, we end up with a situation

:17:13. > :17:21.where we go, should we have done that? Since -- the same in the

:17:22. > :17:24.political situation. Anything political in particular? There is

:17:25. > :17:28.one back home we do not want to get into. It feels good at the moment

:17:29. > :17:33.but when we give people an outlet for that, they going to take it. Do

:17:34. > :17:36.they have the right to take it? Absolutely. But is it the

:17:37. > :17:40.responsible thing to do? That is what we are faced with now and the

:17:41. > :17:44.sport has to do with the fact that we are having to reallocate medals

:17:45. > :17:51.and change around the medal ceremony. We can hear a reaction

:17:52. > :17:58.from our counterparts at NBC, the commentator and broadcaster and four

:17:59. > :18:03.time Olympian from Trinidad. Great to see you, always.

:18:04. > :18:06.Interesting night when it comes to the 100m medal ceremony after what

:18:07. > :18:11.happened last night, what is your take on last night on what we might

:18:12. > :18:16.see or hear tonight? I don't think you can dictate what people feel.

:18:17. > :18:19.And we can talk about the merits of if Justin should be forgiven and

:18:20. > :18:25.everybody should get over it but as he said, in this building five years

:18:26. > :18:30.ago when he lined up next to Bolt, he was cheered. I think he is being

:18:31. > :18:35.booed now because he is a threat to Bolt. And I think the British crowd

:18:36. > :18:38.is in favour of Bolt. It is some of his own doing in his past, but what

:18:39. > :18:42.you saw last night is because everybody wants to see their hero

:18:43. > :18:48.Usain Bolt go out in the way they wanted. Is that from 2015 when

:18:49. > :18:53.Gatlin had a stellar season and it boiled up then? It was pitched in

:18:54. > :18:58.this country and maybe a little over the top as good against evil. 2015

:18:59. > :19:02.was the first time we really saw Bolt threatened anti-win macro by a

:19:03. > :19:08.lane in Beijing and people said, we do not like this guy getting close

:19:09. > :19:14.to Usain. -- and he won by a lane. I can't help from ace renting

:19:15. > :19:20.perspective be appreciative of what Gatlin has done. He came to the

:19:21. > :19:24.World Championships and he does not make the final. In 2012 and he gets

:19:25. > :19:29.the only US model and the only US medal at the worlds in 2013. He has

:19:30. > :19:35.got back off the mat every time Usain Bolt and company have hit him

:19:36. > :19:38.in the face. At 35, what he did here last night, from a sprinting

:19:39. > :19:43.perspective is as good as it gets. As for you working for an American

:19:44. > :19:47.network NBC, how have you covered his career in the last few years and

:19:48. > :19:52.is the drugs think something even mentioned? Oh, yes, we mention it

:19:53. > :19:57.and we can't win. If we do not mention it, they say, how can you

:19:58. > :19:59.ignore it? If we do, they say, this is why track and field suffers in

:20:00. > :20:05.America because you guys talk about drugs. The truth is, I tend to be a

:20:06. > :20:09.slave to the story and the story has been Usain Bolt and we have to cover

:20:10. > :20:13.Gatlin because he has been closest to him since 2013, but no matter

:20:14. > :20:17.what the outcome, yesterday, somebody was not going to be happy.

:20:18. > :20:21.There are people in the States who feel like the guy has paid his dues

:20:22. > :20:26.and served his time, what else to you want him to do? I understand. As

:20:27. > :20:33.always, it is fascinating talking to you, thank you.

:20:34. > :20:36.Phil Jones. Let's see the kind of reaction they are going to get when

:20:37. > :20:44.they come out now into the stadium for the 100m men's medal

:20:45. > :20:48.presentation. I genuinely do not think you are going to get what

:20:49. > :20:52.people think. I think they said that bit last night. I have a suspicion

:20:53. > :21:22.it will be more subdued and there will be some reaction.

:21:23. > :21:34.I have never seen a stadium not react to Usain Bolt. That is

:21:35. > :21:41.reaction. Once they got over the booing Gatlin, it was a celebration

:21:42. > :21:46.of Bolt and his career. I think the British people are fair and they

:21:47. > :21:59.have set their bit. It will be genuinely surprised if it is as the

:22:00. > :22:04.Severus. Let's wait and see. We have to keep remembering that this has

:22:05. > :22:08.been totally forgotten, the Coleman story, young kids, comes into the

:22:09. > :22:12.first championship and he beats Usain Bolt as well. His performance

:22:13. > :22:17.was outstanding and I look forward to seeing what he can do. This is

:22:18. > :22:22.the moment we were waiting for. Sebastian Coe said it would make him

:22:23. > :22:36.feel queasy in 2015 if Justin Gatlin beat Usain Bolt.

:22:37. > :22:38.Gold-medallist and World Champion, representing the United States of

:22:39. > :23:07.America, Justin Gatlin. Ladies and gentlemen, the national

:23:08. > :23:18.anthem of the United States of America.

:23:19. > :24:28.APPLAUSE. Well, it was definitely mixed, more subdued than last night,

:24:29. > :24:35.the booing, and now the cheering. I think people in the emotion of last

:24:36. > :24:40.night, it was Bolt losing to the man and when they realised who it was,

:24:41. > :24:44.because they did not start booing until they realised. It was just an

:24:45. > :24:49.outpouring of that emotion. There was a bit of that again tonight, but

:24:50. > :24:53.then also respect for him as an individual and his performance. I

:24:54. > :24:57.keep saying it is about what he represents, less so than Justin

:24:58. > :25:04.Gatlin himself. The British media, ourselves included, have educated

:25:05. > :25:11.the public a little bit. But that sign says it all. I am never going

:25:12. > :25:15.to sit here, I am sorry, I will never be an apologist for Justin

:25:16. > :25:22.Gatlin or what he represents, really sorry. Never apologise to anybody

:25:23. > :25:27.here. But how is it that Justin Gatlin stands out so far above, in

:25:28. > :25:32.your mind and other people's, above the other drug cheats? Explain the

:25:33. > :25:43.difference. I have talked about others... Marion Jones. But come on,

:25:44. > :25:50.Marion Jones. Seriously, on air... Let's talk about today. We have a

:25:51. > :25:54.responsibility in the media, surely, this guy here... I think I said

:25:55. > :25:59.yesterday, one man should not carry the hate and one man should not

:26:00. > :26:04.carry all of the law. That is what Bolt represents. On the other hand,

:26:05. > :26:09.if we acquiesce all the time, which is what we have done, we are all

:26:10. > :26:13.responsible in our sport for allowing this situation over a

:26:14. > :26:18.number of years to arrive. We let our federations be badly run. We let

:26:19. > :26:23.people who were meant to be working after our sport ride roughshod over

:26:24. > :26:27.all the things we hold dear. And we are partly responsible for that. And

:26:28. > :26:33.now we are in the media and we also, I think we a responsibility within

:26:34. > :26:38.reason and is reasonably as we can, to educate people. I don't disagree

:26:39. > :26:40.with you, but I think we have done a poor job of educating because we

:26:41. > :26:46.created a story that was not accurate. We created a villain and

:26:47. > :26:52.heroes story that created most of this. Eating 2012, the facts Justin

:26:53. > :26:57.Gatlin was in the stadium in 2012 and nobody booed him is proof -- I

:26:58. > :27:01.think in 2012. In 2015 when Bolt got close to Bolt and people were fed up

:27:02. > :27:05.with the drug situation, we created this narrative and we did not do a

:27:06. > :27:09.good job of educating people about all of the people, all of the drug

:27:10. > :27:13.cheats in the sport and how they have gotten away with it. And what

:27:14. > :27:18.the Federation have not done, we did not educate them about that, we just

:27:19. > :27:23.gave them a representative. Absolutely, we have compounded the

:27:24. > :27:26.problem, let's face that. At the same time, we have to recognise the

:27:27. > :27:32.sport is trying to clean itself up. The fact that the time yesterday was

:27:33. > :27:41.really slow, we have not had a 100m slower than that since 2003. 2003

:27:42. > :27:45.was a slow 100m, right? That question was put to the three of

:27:46. > :27:49.them in the press conference, where the times slow because drug testing

:27:50. > :27:53.is better? He took the inference you are accusing us of being drug cheats

:27:54. > :27:59.but I get the point and it is well made. And that is a good thing, we

:28:00. > :28:03.are improving slowly. I think Sebastian Coe said it, more money

:28:04. > :28:07.would help. The Federation being stronger would help, but I come back

:28:08. > :28:12.to your point, Michael. I have only ever tried to deal in facts. I don't

:28:13. > :28:16.know Justin Gatlin very well, were not know if he's a nice guy or a bad

:28:17. > :28:23.guy. The other people who I might suspect and there might be some here

:28:24. > :28:27.who could be cheating, I can't say anything until they have failed a

:28:28. > :28:30.test and they have been given a ban and your parities have dealt with

:28:31. > :28:34.them and that becomes a fact. Because Gatlin is in our faces a

:28:35. > :28:39.lot, that gets repeated and repeated, more so than a guy who

:28:40. > :28:45.missed 12th in the discus. That just happens. It is not the fault Gatlin,

:28:46. > :28:50.he is in the 100m against Bolt and inevitably he has had more coverage

:28:51. > :28:54.than most so probably you are right, inevitably, he has become the

:28:55. > :28:58.villain and people have decided to make him the villain. I hope I have

:28:59. > :29:03.never called him a villain, I have just said, this guy has failed two

:29:04. > :29:08.drug tests. I tried when I am commentating in the Diamond League

:29:09. > :29:11.and the rest of it, to mention that where it is relevant. I can't all

:29:12. > :29:16.the time, would never get any commentating done. You know what I

:29:17. > :29:19.mean. Yes, I think you have presented him as a villain. I think

:29:20. > :29:24.we have presented him as a villain. And I think that was something that,

:29:25. > :29:29.you right, we have responsibility to educate and if we had done a better

:29:30. > :29:33.job of educating and we need to do a better job of educating the bans on

:29:34. > :29:37.all of the goings-on with regard to doping rather than painting it --

:29:38. > :29:42.any net on one person because they believe and that person is gone,

:29:43. > :29:49.everything will be great, and it will not. That's true and we have

:29:50. > :29:53.not been honest, I say we loosely. For many years, decades,

:29:54. > :29:56.unfortunately. And now we are under the microscope and we have to

:29:57. > :30:01.address it or else we will lose our fans and sponsorship and that is

:30:02. > :30:02.what kills the sport. We are at a critical points now and that is why

:30:03. > :30:17.this is really important. Any positive is this debate is being

:30:18. > :30:20.driven, on the agenda and people experienced like yourselves are

:30:21. > :30:26.having these conversations. Bearing your laundry in public. This will

:30:27. > :30:31.continue to run. We will talk about this but Steve, you have a job to do

:30:32. > :30:41.tonight, I will tell you what is happening. They will get started

:30:42. > :30:47.with Women's Pole Vault, with Holly Bradshaw aiming for her first global

:30:48. > :30:53.outdoor medal, she competed in 2012 and came fifth, Elaine Thompson and

:30:54. > :31:03.Daphne Shivers will want to progress and then the men's 400 metres

:31:04. > :31:15.semifinals. Just after eight o'clock, it is the Men 110m Hurdles.

:31:16. > :31:23.At 8:35pm, the men's shot put. Then the climax of the Heptathlon and

:31:24. > :31:31.Katie G trying to upset the odds by winning a medal. And then we have

:31:32. > :31:40.the men's 800 metres. We end the evening with the Women's 100 metres.

:31:41. > :31:45.Can Elaine Thompson when her maiden individual title? You might have

:31:46. > :31:51.heard some roaring in the background and that was Holly Bradshaw being

:31:52. > :31:59.introduced to the crowd. She knows their stadium very well. She enjoyed

:32:00. > :32:06.herself in 2012? Yes and no, she was sick, she came away bitterly

:32:07. > :32:12.disappointed. But she has a real opportunity, she is that much away

:32:13. > :32:17.from being the best in the world, four centimetres separating her from

:32:18. > :32:22.the rest of the best, the Greek girl in the pole vault, she must use this

:32:23. > :32:31.energy in the stadium to her advantage and not let this way her

:32:32. > :32:41.down. At the year, she absolutely used the crowd to Will her on. She

:32:42. > :32:50.is great at that. 5.81 would be ridiculous here at! She settled the

:32:51. > :32:55.new British record, she is confident and as long as she gets her runway

:32:56. > :33:02.accurate, the drive and planned, she is flying. And the climax of the

:33:03. > :33:07.Heptathlon, the women have been going hard over two days, starting

:33:08. > :33:13.with the 100 metres Hurdles yesterday, we will bring it up to

:33:14. > :33:21.speed with that. Do we have any up-to-date on that? The long jump?

:33:22. > :33:26.This is Katarina Johnson-Thompson this morning, one of her best

:33:27. > :33:34.events. She knew exactly what she had to do. There is going to be that

:33:35. > :33:39.starting issue of the last World Championships but she made good on

:33:40. > :33:46.her first job, it was clean. And that was a very nice opening for

:33:47. > :33:54.her. Her technique was solid. We know she can jump close to seven

:33:55. > :33:59.metres, but that accuracy on the board has lettered down so many

:34:00. > :34:05.times. She had such a difficult time in Beijing with this event, it was

:34:06. > :34:12.good to get through this? This will be a confidence boost, we were

:34:13. > :34:16.worried, how the championships might affect mental state going forward

:34:17. > :34:20.because we know she has incredible physical talent and this is just

:34:21. > :34:27.about her emotional and mental state in a big competition so this will

:34:28. > :34:33.be, no matter what happens, a positive thing for her. After

:34:34. > :34:37.yesterday. For her going forward and this gives her the ability to build

:34:38. > :34:40.on this, instead of being completely let down from the entire

:34:41. > :34:47.championship, whether she gets a medal or not, she can say, that one

:34:48. > :34:51.issue, it was the long jump, this time it's the high jump and I have

:34:52. > :34:57.to figure that out and she can look at those issues with coaches and

:34:58. > :35:03.where she has been let down. But there is a consistent thread. She

:35:04. > :35:09.went from fourth to third place and then an event, not her strongest,

:35:10. > :35:16.but she had a great javelin? How would she respond on the day when it

:35:17. > :35:20.is inherently her worst of the two days, normally. This time she

:35:21. > :35:25.managed to make the second day very solid. That was a good long jump,

:35:26. > :35:34.really good javelin, by her standards. And over 40 metres. Her

:35:35. > :35:40.season best, and psychologically, what we were talking about is her

:35:41. > :35:46.ability to compartmentalise each event, this has been done and I will

:35:47. > :35:53.move on. She said she absolutely did that. We were talking last night, I

:35:54. > :35:57.wish we had that one error, Jess was talking about her progression and

:35:58. > :36:01.the way she approached the pressure and expectation of talent and her

:36:02. > :36:07.potential and it was very much, I didn't talk about scoring 1000

:36:08. > :36:14.points, just winning the next championship and being the best I

:36:15. > :36:18.can be. Great advice. Our conversations, whenever we have

:36:19. > :36:27.them, we talk athletics all day long! Vetter had a magnificent

:36:28. > :36:34.javelin and this could affect whether Katarina Johnson-Thompson

:36:35. > :36:39.makes it onto the rostrum. This was the turning point. She is a great

:36:40. > :36:50.javelin throw, she set personal best earlier in the year, but 58.41 is

:36:51. > :37:00.stunning. She is slight, her father is coach. And she uses her body to

:37:01. > :37:07.perfection. Great hero. Almost 50 metres more than Katarina

:37:08. > :37:21.Johnson-Thompson throws, moving her into third, Thiam still in the lead.

:37:22. > :37:29.And then Schafer and Johnson-Thompson is done there.

:37:30. > :37:38.Realistically, she needs a 17 second sowing. All they need to do is run

:37:39. > :37:46.to their abilities, Katarina is one of the best 800 metres runners but

:37:47. > :37:54.this is a very tall order. And 17 seconds is very challenging. It is

:37:55. > :38:00.and Rodriguez could include her personal best. We will see them at

:38:01. > :38:06.nine o'clock. Always a wonderful side, the 800 metres, the band of

:38:07. > :38:08.sisters at nine o'clock. And we can go out there because it is the

:38:09. > :38:26.Women's 100 metres semifinal. Neita in a line-up of some veterans,

:38:27. > :38:32.comfortably the youngest at 20, she turns 21 later this month. She ran

:38:33. > :38:40.very well in her first-round heat, it was not far away from her PB.

:38:41. > :38:43.This is a very good line-up, Schippers, the Adelaide from the

:38:44. > :38:54.Ivory Coast doing very well. This is how they are lining up. Schippers

:38:55. > :39:04.just a little bit off her best. We would expect Stevens to be the

:39:05. > :39:11.strongest there. And this is the first track event. We are talking

:39:12. > :39:21.about doping suspensions. Baptiste has had that. She had the world

:39:22. > :39:27.bronze six years ago, the Trinidad and Tobago Adelaide. Runner-up in

:39:28. > :39:38.the 100 and 202 is, behind Elaine Thompson.

:39:39. > :39:51.So, Daryll Neita, with that familiar welcome to the stadium. Capacity

:39:52. > :39:59.crowd. Stevens was the runner-up in the US trials. Has undergone under

:40:00. > :40:10.11 seconds yet. Be world champion over 200 metres, Schippers, she ran

:40:11. > :40:23.10.81 that year. She has not looked quite as sharp but this girl, fourth

:40:24. > :40:31.place in Rio, Ta Lou. Very quick in qualifying again. Checking over as

:40:32. > :40:43.the leading campaigner from the Ivory Coast. She ran an astonishing

:40:44. > :40:50.time, Lalova-Collio. Third in the Jamaican championships, Jamaica has

:40:51. > :41:03.four sprinters in the semifinals. And two going here, including Levy.

:41:04. > :41:11.Two through automatically and two fastest losers over the three heats.

:41:12. > :41:16.Britain with three representatives and Daryll Neita starting things and

:41:17. > :41:32.we have Kelly and Baptiste in the second. Stevens in lane five. The

:41:33. > :41:41.first of the semifinals in the Women's 100 metres. Not a bad start

:41:42. > :41:56.from Baftas skippers. Stephen is struggling. -- from Schippers.

:41:57. > :42:02.10.87, astonishingly quick from Ta Lou, just a fraction outside her

:42:03. > :42:07.personal best and a season as my best and she is a serious contender.

:42:08. > :42:16.We will see what Elaine Thompson and the rest will run. Impressively

:42:17. > :42:25.through to the final at 9:50pm. Neita was in a good position but

:42:26. > :42:31.unable to finish things off. Schippers has also qualified

:42:32. > :42:36.automatically. Very well balanced race, driving well, went through all

:42:37. > :42:41.of the phases accurately and when you do that but her talent, there is

:42:42. > :42:46.not much Schippers can do to bring her back and when you look at that

:42:47. > :42:54.finishing time, it is clear, this young lady will be ready for the

:42:55. > :43:03.final. Through automatically and the big disappointment, Stevens, Neita

:43:04. > :43:08.was quickly up on her. For a very big semifinal, she has done well,

:43:09. > :43:14.finishing in fourth place. 11.16. Setting herself up for the rest of

:43:15. > :43:19.her career. Unlikely she will still go through but she has a chance

:43:20. > :43:27.because she was fourth and the two fastest losers go through. We can

:43:28. > :43:32.hear from Daryll Neita. You wanted to give yourself a chance and you

:43:33. > :43:39.have? Hopefully, I have to wait but fingers crossed. Maybe, who knows?

:43:40. > :43:45.You have found this rich vein of form and consistency and you are new

:43:46. > :43:50.to this. It is just the momentum of last year, getting the medal in Rio,

:43:51. > :43:55.that has given me so much confidence in my individual and I am praying

:43:56. > :44:00.for the best. And you have embraced the crowd and they have embraced you

:44:01. > :44:08.back! Thank God for the crowd! The loudest cheering of my life! Fingers

:44:09. > :44:15.crossed and all the best! Waiting for the following semifinals, what

:44:16. > :44:26.an amazing run from Ta Lou. Schippers also threw at ten point

:44:27. > :44:31.98. Holly Bradshaw, pacing up and down, getting herself ready for the

:44:32. > :44:35.pole vault final. She is up with the best in the world, her Heights

:44:36. > :44:38.compare to some of the greatest currently on the international stage

:44:39. > :44:43.and with the home crowd, who knows what she can achieve? She knows the

:44:44. > :44:49.importance of competing at the home championships. She spoke to fill.

:44:50. > :44:53.You are one of those athletes within the team but the experience of

:44:54. > :44:56.London 2012 and you get to experience the World Championships

:44:57. > :45:04.in London, what is the thought process? I am so excited, I remember

:45:05. > :45:08.London fairly well, finishing sixth, and to come out of the stadium and

:45:09. > :45:13.be proposed to and I am married, with a different name, it is crazy

:45:14. > :45:17.and it holds lots of special memories and every time I go back to

:45:18. > :45:21.the stadium it gives me goose bumps. She has proven she can deliver on

:45:22. > :45:26.the bigger stages. Comfortably through to the final on Sunday.

:45:27. > :45:31.Flawless evening for Holly Bradshaw. The best position I have been in for

:45:32. > :45:35.a long time, better and stronger and technically the best I have been.

:45:36. > :45:40.When it comes to a major championship I will step up my game,

:45:41. > :45:46.I have proven that with Beijing and Rio. Two British records this year.

:45:47. > :45:53.Oh, she has got that! Unbelievable, Holly Bradshaw! I love

:45:54. > :45:59.major championships, it what -- it is what I was born to do, it is what

:46:00. > :46:04.I love doing. Holly Bradshaw, she is somebody, we

:46:05. > :46:09.do not want to put too much pressure on the situation, Denise, but would

:46:10. > :46:15.you say hopeful of a rostrum finish if it clicks in place? She is one of

:46:16. > :46:20.my predictions! I have let the Kat out of the bag! I am really pleased

:46:21. > :46:24.with how she has but been performing this season. Inconsistencies at

:46:25. > :46:28.times but mentally a stronger athlete. The injuries and the

:46:29. > :46:33.setbacks, she knows what this means and she is hungry now. Yes, I would

:46:34. > :46:37.agree, Denise. I think she is right there. It is not guaranteed and

:46:38. > :46:42.certainly not going to be easy, it is going to be a tough competition,

:46:43. > :46:45.but she has the ability to get amongst the medals. And she has got

:46:46. > :46:50.a great attitude, I looked at the interview earlier this week we

:46:51. > :46:54.showed off her talking about her experience over the last couple of

:46:55. > :47:00.years and how she has mature and she sounds very confident and I think

:47:01. > :47:03.that approach will kick in. If it kicks off, that addition, it will

:47:04. > :47:08.create a fantastic atmosphere in here tonight. You may have seen a

:47:09. > :47:12.fantastic moment when dangerous get Ennis-Hill got her upgraded gold

:47:13. > :47:17.Medal from Daegu. Welcome to the studio, Jess, but back outside for

:47:18. > :47:21.the women's 100m, it is Heat 2 and that lady Elaine Thompson the double

:47:22. > :47:26.Olympic champion is the favourite and looking fantastic, Steve Cram.

:47:27. > :47:34.I have put my best shirt on, nice of you to notice! Desiree Henry has

:47:35. > :47:38.found herself next to the Olympic champion. When you look at this

:47:39. > :47:45.heat, if she really nails this, really nails it, if you look at the

:47:46. > :47:48.semifinals, this is, despite Elaine Thompson, look at the rest of those

:47:49. > :47:55.names and you would not be frightened by them. Swoboda will be

:47:56. > :48:07.out quickly. Desiree Henry next to her, a manual of Canada. Santos and

:48:08. > :48:18.the young Arianna Washington. And a 23 champion Swoboda. Desiree Henry,

:48:19. > :48:24.21. She has relived so many times lighting the flame here in 2012 and

:48:25. > :48:27.she has sampled this atmosphere. Elaine Thompson has looked supreme

:48:28. > :48:32.all season, really looking forward to watching her race here, as she

:48:33. > :48:46.got something special? Even in the semifinal. Immanuel having a great

:48:47. > :48:56.season, a personal best in the heats. A good 200m runner. Finds

:48:57. > :48:59.herself right in the middle, the Brazilian Santos, the South American

:49:00. > :49:05.record-holder, quick out of the blocks. Another one who ran a

:49:06. > :49:10.personal best to qualify. Mujinga Kambundji, we all got to know her

:49:11. > :49:13.well in Zurich in 2014, for good reasons and bad when she dropped the

:49:14. > :49:19.baton in the Relay in front of a home crowd. And she did rise to the

:49:20. > :49:26.occasion, and she knows of a home crowd can do. 21-year-old Ariana

:49:27. > :49:36.Washington. Making it through in the American trials to third place. And

:49:37. > :49:46.the South African record-holder, Carina Horn, in lane nine. It is

:49:47. > :49:55.tough qualifying at this stage. Just to guarantee the two fastest losers

:49:56. > :50:01.spots, Daryll Neita was fourth, you never know. It doesn't quick enough,

:50:02. > :50:07.but you never know. Desiree Henry, this is the time to produce the race

:50:08. > :50:16.of your life. 11.9 is her season's best. 11.6 was her personal best set

:50:17. > :50:26.last year. Something like that, might not be too far away. Swoboda

:50:27. > :50:30.away quickly on the far side as expected and so is Elaine Thompson.

:50:31. > :50:40.Henry with a good start. Some toss. As expected, Thompson leading. But

:50:41. > :50:45.what about Santos? A cracking run, into a slight headwind? I was

:50:46. > :50:53.wondering how quick she would go, that is pretty quick. Santos was a

:50:54. > :50:58.revelation, 10.9. And that is a new national and area record, a new

:50:59. > :51:05.South American record from Santos, no wonder she screams of delight.

:51:06. > :51:09.And Thompson must have thought, I am running 10.80 and there is somebody

:51:10. > :51:13.behind me, what is going on? Desiree Henry is fifth, run out of it. Her

:51:14. > :51:19.best runs were early in the season and she has not been able to repeat

:51:20. > :51:24.that, Colin. Thompson and also Santos, that was a surprise. Shall

:51:25. > :51:27.we talk about Elaine Thompson first? This was a hugely impressive

:51:28. > :51:33.demonstration and sprinting. Look how easy and relaxed she looks. It

:51:34. > :51:37.is like she is just floating on air, beautiful runner to see. And Santos,

:51:38. > :51:43.she got out reasonably well, not electric. And she just concentrated

:51:44. > :51:47.on what she wanted to do, which is qualified. The gun goes out, Elaine

:51:48. > :51:53.Thompson by 30 metres says goodbye to the rest of the field. Look at

:51:54. > :51:58.Santos. Focused, pumping her arms and working hard to the line, not

:51:59. > :52:02.taking any risks. It is a semifinal, you want to be the top two, she

:52:03. > :52:10.worked hard and was rewarded with a massive record and personal best

:52:11. > :52:13.10.19. Two contrasting styles, on the right is Desiree Henry and it

:52:14. > :52:17.looks like she is really working. Compare that to the beautifully

:52:18. > :52:29.fluid running of Elaine Thompson. She has shut down, her arms have

:52:30. > :52:32.stopped pumping. And Elaine Thompson runs 10.84. If conditions stay the

:52:33. > :52:40.same, this final could be sensational, Steve. Lovely to watch

:52:41. > :52:45.Elaine Thompson. 10.84, and Santos must improve her area record. And

:52:46. > :52:49.still hanging in as the fastest loser is Mujinga Kambundji. Sadly,

:52:50. > :52:57.neither Desiree Henry or Daryll Neita makes it through to the final.

:52:58. > :53:02.You could watch Elaine Thompson run all day, are you born with that

:53:03. > :53:06.ease, can you coach people to look relaxed even if they are working

:53:07. > :53:11.hard to looks relaxed? That is something that makes her special.

:53:12. > :53:17.She has such an easy sprinting that just allows her to be able to relax

:53:18. > :53:21.throughout this entire run. Once she comes out of her drive bays, she is

:53:22. > :53:25.just now... This is an early round, but she will not looked different

:53:26. > :53:29.from this in the final and that is the discipline, she does not stress,

:53:30. > :53:35.she just glide through and creates turnover. More so than most other

:53:36. > :53:38.sprinters. That is her weapon. The contrast with Henry, is that fair?

:53:39. > :53:43.What Colin was saying, the effort she looks like she's putting in,

:53:44. > :53:48.there is not much more you can do. There is a lot of Henry Candy. One

:53:49. > :53:55.on is doing something completely different. The first rule is

:53:56. > :53:59.symmetry and she has one arm going far out to the right and the only

:54:00. > :54:02.one doing that, and every time it comes back, it pulls her this way

:54:03. > :54:07.and she has to fight it to go back the other way. That is happening all

:54:08. > :54:11.the way down the track. If you had an aerial view of her, she would be

:54:12. > :54:15.doing this. That is a problem. Easy to correct, she is a fantastic

:54:16. > :54:20.finisher and she has great speed. I would be surprised if her coach is

:54:21. > :54:23.not working with her on that. I stole that from Denise, actually! I

:54:24. > :54:28.like it when you give the credit, that is good. Said it so you do not

:54:29. > :54:35.have two, Denise! You now say what he said! Yes, and everything else!

:54:36. > :54:39.Jess, we loved seeing you getting that mental and it was so emotional,

:54:40. > :54:44.Steve was in the studio as well and it really did look like it here in

:54:45. > :54:50.UI, but it looks like you were taking in this arena for one more

:54:51. > :54:55.time. Yes, it was strange because it felt like I had forgotten that

:54:56. > :55:00.feeling of the podium and the crowd. I kind of hard and coming into the

:55:01. > :55:04.centre of the arena and hearing the crowd cheering one last time for me,

:55:05. > :55:13.I was like, I'm not going to cry! I felt really emotional. Just seeing

:55:14. > :55:17.my son. Yes. Could you see him from the rostrum? Yes, I was blowing him

:55:18. > :55:24.a kiss. It was a really special moment. I asked Steve Cram if he had

:55:25. > :55:26.commentated on anybody eight months pregnant on top of the rostrum and

:55:27. > :55:34.surprisingly, he had not and he put that down to your emotions! May be,

:55:35. > :55:39.it will be on the Question of Sport. I did think that! It was brilliant.

:55:40. > :55:43.No better way to sign of my career one last time in the stadium than

:55:44. > :55:47.soaking up this crowd. You should have got it in debut in 2011 but if

:55:48. > :55:53.you can't get it there, you have to get it somewhere else and getting it

:55:54. > :55:58.in front of this crowd -- Daegu. It took a long time and wouldn't I

:55:59. > :56:01.would love to have it in that emotion -- in that moment when

:56:02. > :56:06.emotions were raw, but no better way to receive it than in the stadium.

:56:07. > :56:12.You are backstage ready to come out when the 100m men were getting ready

:56:13. > :56:17.and did you see those guys? Was there an atmosphere? Was it normal?

:56:18. > :56:24.Usain Bolt was dancing around, enjoying himself. Coleman

:56:25. > :56:29.congratulated him. There was not really an atmosphere. It seemed OK.

:56:30. > :56:35.But I obviously heard the booing again. It wasn't as loud as last

:56:36. > :56:39.night but it did ring out it was a bit when he first stepped out onto

:56:40. > :56:43.the podium, interesting to know what goes on behind closed curtains.

:56:44. > :56:46.Thank you, Jess. We will be chatting more throughout the evening but now

:56:47. > :56:51.it is the final of the 100m semifinal heats and Asha Philip is

:56:52. > :57:01.out there, the European indoor champion. She had this inside lane

:57:02. > :57:06.for her heats and she ran well. It personal best, looking close to that

:57:07. > :57:12.and perhaps even better to have a terms of going through. You personal

:57:13. > :57:18.best this season for the Swiss runner, Salome Kora. Trying to find

:57:19. > :57:22.somebody who might be able to challenge Elaine Thompson, she looks

:57:23. > :57:27.shoulders ahead, but maybe the US champion Tori Bowie can lift

:57:28. > :57:41.herself. The silver and bronze in Rio in the sprinting. Running 10.90

:57:42. > :57:47.this season. Okagbare. In sprinting, the Commonwealth titles are hard to

:57:48. > :57:54.earn. What a run at Gina Luckenkemper produced in the first

:57:55. > :57:59.round! 10.95, the quickest by a German woman since 1991. Marie-Josee

:58:00. > :58:04.Ta Lou looked good in the first round. Trying to join her fellow

:58:05. > :58:11.countrywoman in that final is Ahoure. A silver in the World

:58:12. > :58:17.Championships in Moscow a few years ago. Natasha Morrison, the fourth

:58:18. > :58:28.Jamaican sprinter competing, Facey is out. Elaine Thompson goes

:58:29. > :58:33.through. And Ahye. Her time in the Trinidad and Tobago Championships

:58:34. > :58:36.stands out, 10.82. A race which was very quick and a time that stands

:58:37. > :58:46.out from the rest of her times this season. All perfectly normal. Solo

:58:47. > :59:01.effort. So Asha Philip and Daryll Neita and

:59:02. > :59:08.Desiree Henry and -- tried and could not make it to the final. Philip

:59:09. > :59:15.goes in lane two. Salome Kora Switzerland next to her.

:59:16. > :59:26.Asha Philip is off to eight good start and can she hang on as Tori

:59:27. > :59:35.Bowie comes back. Hanging in there. But it is Tori Bowie who gets it.

:59:36. > :59:41.Ahoure second. And pretty much going to form, out very quickly is Asha

:59:42. > :59:44.Philip, she always is over the first 50 and fading in the second half and

:59:45. > :59:51.Tori Bowie coming through, a great 200m runner with high speed. Ahoure

:59:52. > :59:54.taking the second automatic qualifying place and Asha Philip

:59:55. > :00:00.will not be going through to the final later this evening.

:00:01. > :00:09.She will be disappointed, she did what she could do, she kept herself

:00:10. > :00:14.in contention, it was around that 60 metres mark and then the quality of

:00:15. > :00:23.the field put the pressure on and when people move as quickly as they

:00:24. > :00:33.did to Asha, you can understand that Bowie, the eventual winner, she beat

:00:34. > :00:39.Thompson before and surprised everyone, very relaxed, not

:00:40. > :00:44.stressing at all. This 100 metres has been set up for a very good

:00:45. > :00:55.competition. The slowest, although it is relative, with Bowie coming

:00:56. > :01:00.through, easing towards the end and that relaxed sprinting style to

:01:01. > :01:10.occur through the last 20 metres. Ahoure getting second. 10.90 nine.

:01:11. > :01:20.And Ahye is confirmed as one of the fastest losers. Asha Philip,

:01:21. > :01:32.disappointing, they are, in 11.19. Elaine Thompson is heading the way,

:01:33. > :01:40.Sidorova Brandywell. That is a huge personal best for Santos. And for

:01:41. > :01:50.the Brazilian. Then Bowie. Who can challenge Elaine Thompson? That is

:01:51. > :01:53.that 9:50pm this evening. After the semifinals, we have the line-up and

:01:54. > :02:01.we will move over to BBC Two by then. Where is it? Thompson against

:02:02. > :02:10.the rest? It is Elaine Thompson against the rest but Ta Lou is

:02:11. > :02:15.running fairly well, you have a Jamaican, an American, two Ivory

:02:16. > :02:21.Coast and two Trinidad and Tobago athletes, the changing of the guard

:02:22. > :02:24.might be taking place with the Jamaicans, they are struggling to

:02:25. > :02:33.find people outside of Elaine Thompson. Holly Bradshaw, we can

:02:34. > :02:38.watch that pole vault competition. You know all about the energy in the

:02:39. > :02:44.stadium, what advice would you give to her? She is in a very good

:02:45. > :02:50.position, she had some injury problems this year but has come out

:02:51. > :02:56.very strongly, the crowd can help people get those heights and what we

:02:57. > :03:00.have seen from the documentary, she is strong and confident and will

:03:01. > :03:05.have taken comfort from qualification. She will use the

:03:06. > :03:13.crowd and the adrenaline. We can go outside, we will hear your voice on

:03:14. > :03:21.this. With Tony and Steve on commentary. Holly Bradshaw getting

:03:22. > :03:36.ready. Choosing to pass on the first two heights. Some very big

:03:37. > :03:48.challengers for the gold. This will be tough. Holly Bradshaw has 60,000

:03:49. > :03:52.people on her side. Bradshaw. Only one other Apple it has not jumped

:03:53. > :04:06.yet and that is the Olympic champion. Holly Bradshaw joining at

:04:07. > :04:13.4.55, her first attempt. It went a bit sideways but that is good stuff!

:04:14. > :04:18.Well, she got herself over, the most important thing. That was a clean

:04:19. > :04:25.first jump and a good start. That is what you want, jump clean at the

:04:26. > :04:32.earlier heights, that means you do not knock off the buyer, you clear

:04:33. > :04:36.the bar first time. That is how the medals will be decided, she just

:04:37. > :04:42.decelerates a little bit, you can see that little judder. Miss timing

:04:43. > :04:48.that a little bit but a first-time clearance is a first-time clearance.

:04:49. > :04:56.It was not quite right but she got over and that bodes well. I am just

:04:57. > :05:02.looking at that again, the pole is not out early enough, we want to see

:05:03. > :05:06.on the step before she takes off, but her right hand is high above her

:05:07. > :05:14.head and the left-hand is pushing the pole away. We can look at a jump

:05:15. > :05:18.earlier this year. Manchester, firefighters and the first is to get

:05:19. > :05:26.out quick, running fast from the back of the run-up. Getting to run

:05:27. > :05:32.quick, then strong in the middle, getting your head up and get ready,

:05:33. > :05:38.setting yourself up for this plant, getting the feet down quickly. A

:05:39. > :05:43.little bit like the long jumper. And really swaying fast into the final

:05:44. > :05:48.stage. Which is all about our process and it is great to see that

:05:49. > :05:54.clearance, look at just how far over she is in Manchester. 60,000 people

:05:55. > :06:06.sharing her in the Olympic Stadium. Really optimistic about her chances

:06:07. > :06:15.in this pole vault final. Holly Bradshaw, she can rest, the next

:06:16. > :06:24.height is 4.65. Only one athlete not involved yet, and other athlete

:06:25. > :06:37.getting ready his Kylypko from Switzerland. Season 's best of 4.70

:06:38. > :06:43.three. There are lots of athletes who fancy possibly getting a medal

:06:44. > :06:51.here. And it is the execution of technique, rhythm, balance, this is

:06:52. > :06:55.a real gymnastic, athletic event. And very technical indeed. Lots to

:06:56. > :07:03.consider, the wind might be getting in. You might see the effect of that

:07:04. > :07:09.slightly, with the flags around. That is the 100 metres start, they

:07:10. > :07:13.are running across the top bend of the stadium to the pole vault Matt,

:07:14. > :07:21.you can see the wind on the yellow flag held by the official. So,

:07:22. > :07:30.Buchler. That is not the start you want. You have given a length of

:07:31. > :07:35.time, the clock was counting down, she had seven seconds to start her

:07:36. > :07:39.run. Not necessarily complete the vault and as she was running, she

:07:40. > :07:43.was not comfortable and she has bailed out. Holly Bradshaw waiting

:07:44. > :07:59.for her next attempt of 4.65. There is a capacity crowd and some

:08:00. > :08:06.enjoying the late slivers of sunshine at the London Stadium and

:08:07. > :08:14.Graham Carlin is lining up in the World Championship semifinal and he

:08:15. > :08:19.is outside some very tablets. There is a lot of taping on the inside of

:08:20. > :08:25.his left leg but he has been running well. The world record-holder,

:08:26. > :08:32.initially supposed to be lining up in the first semifinal, would have

:08:33. > :08:44.made things ridiculous. He has been shuffled out, replaced by Allen.

:08:45. > :08:55.Allen comes in and this is a very high quality line-up.

:08:56. > :09:06.The Borlees have been a staple of the scene, Kevin is running slightly

:09:07. > :09:19.faster this season. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:09:20. > :09:24.Dwayne Cowan. He is in the semifinal of the championships. This man is a

:09:25. > :09:38.new power of 400 meet is running from America. 43.70 this season. In

:09:39. > :09:51.Lane 6, the 21-year-old Jamaican champion, Allen. Gardiner, usually

:09:52. > :10:01.the boy wonder. This man is even younger, 19 years old. London. 44.47

:10:02. > :10:36.this season. And Omelko. Those middle names are

:10:37. > :10:45.brittle to try to qualify from. The power of Kerley, just 22. Cowan

:10:46. > :10:49.readies himself for the semifinal of a World Championship. The first

:10:50. > :11:21.semifinal of the men's 400 metres. Cowan is not worried by Kerley.

:11:22. > :11:30.Kerley making his move, Gardiner, that languid style putting pressure

:11:31. > :11:37.on Allen. Cowan fading a little bit. London, he is a long way back, look

:11:38. > :11:41.at the style of Gardiner as he fires down the home straight. The Jamaican

:11:42. > :11:54.is coming through. The Americans run out. It is Gardiner, 43.90 from

:11:55. > :12:05.Gardiner, he has gone hard in the semifinal, but the final is not

:12:06. > :12:11.until Tuesday. 43.90. No wonder London and Kerley were struggling to

:12:12. > :12:19.keep pace. Allen judged things well. And it is Allen and Gardiner who go

:12:20. > :12:29.through. Michael Johnson will be impressed. 43.89 is the official in

:12:30. > :12:34.the first round, Cowan was shocked, I was running fast and was unable to

:12:35. > :12:43.get into the mix, that was unbelievable. We can look from the

:12:44. > :12:47.blocks. Kerley, third from the right, you would expect him to be

:12:48. > :12:52.one of the stars in the middle of the track. The youngster, Gardiner,

:12:53. > :13:03.you can see that Cowan is running very hard. And he just hits the wall

:13:04. > :13:11.very early. Kerley is still in it. Gardiner, relaxed but pushing hard.

:13:12. > :13:21.He never lets off the gas. I have got Kerley on my onside, his fastest

:13:22. > :13:29.time in the world this year. And a very good run from the Jamaican

:13:30. > :13:34.athlete as well. This is fantastic running, it will take its toll on

:13:35. > :13:42.him. The great thing about these heats is tomorrow is a day off. We

:13:43. > :13:49.can look again, that is Allen, he gets out really hard, really working

:13:50. > :13:57.out. At this point, you have to relax, you do not slow down but you

:13:58. > :14:02.relax your shoulders. Look at the contrast with Kerley, looking more

:14:03. > :14:06.relaxed. And here it is all over for Cowan, he was running too hard,

:14:07. > :14:13.maybe there is an issue with his hamstring as well. Kerley will be

:14:14. > :14:30.disappointed, he did not expect to have to run this heart. Cowan

:14:31. > :14:36.struggling at this point. Kerley were struggling to get alongside the

:14:37. > :14:45.22-year-olds, Stephen Gardner, this is a new national record. And Allen,

:14:46. > :14:50.that is a huge chunk off his personal best. And the great

:14:51. > :14:59.American hope at the moment, Kerley, we will have to see if he is one of

:15:00. > :15:08.the fastest losers. We have seen the height of 4.55. The defending world

:15:09. > :15:14.champion, Silva. Her first attempt at the same height, 4.55, just. She

:15:15. > :15:21.has had a very inconsistent season so far.

:15:22. > :15:28.The fourth best job of all time when she gets it right. I have talked

:15:29. > :15:34.about afflicting intention and silver is very much one of them. --

:15:35. > :15:45.athletes in contention. Wobbly start and a clearance and the second

:15:46. > :15:48.height of 4.50 five. Next, the men's semifinal and it is the world-record

:15:49. > :15:54.holder Olympic champion van Niekerk aiming to do the very tricky double,

:15:55. > :15:59.as Michael Johnson knows, although it was stuff in your day, more races

:16:00. > :16:06.in six days. He has six races in six days. These guys have a rest day,

:16:07. > :16:11.but he has not, will that affect the way he races this 400m quizzed Mikey

:16:12. > :16:15.has the 200 m tomorrow. It will do. He has to make sure he wins the

:16:16. > :16:20.heat. He has a much easier heat than the first heat. Controversially,

:16:21. > :16:23.potentially, he was originally drawn in the previous heat which is

:16:24. > :16:29.probably going to go down as one of the fastest semifinal heats of all

:16:30. > :16:33.time. But we hear there was an appeal and he was put into the

:16:34. > :16:36.second heat and replaces Nathon Allen, who was in the first heat,

:16:37. > :16:42.the Jamaican who finished second, so that is controversy because he will

:16:43. > :16:46.want easier heat because he is doubling. As is Isaac Makwala and he

:16:47. > :16:51.has not been able to change his semifinal round. You do not want

:16:52. > :16:54.athletes federations dictating to the organisers which heat you one

:16:55. > :17:00.jot athletes in. They would have had a good point that the first heat

:17:01. > :17:04.would be stacks, but if that is the way the organisers positioned it, it

:17:05. > :17:08.is how you finish in the preliminaries, a son who the

:17:09. > :17:16.athletes are. And he finished second. I believe he did. So we will

:17:17. > :17:20.find out what happened, but that is a little controversial. It opens the

:17:21. > :17:24.door to other people protesting. It could take out Fred Kerley, he will

:17:25. > :17:31.probably get in, but he had a tough time. OK, Steve Cram, take it away.

:17:32. > :17:38.Thank you very much, and to pick up Michael's point about the times, we

:17:39. > :17:43.will mention the redraw in a second, but van Niekerk, the only one I can

:17:44. > :17:46.find the semifinal run under 44 seconds was a certain Michael

:17:47. > :17:55.Johnson in 1999 in the semifinal and I think he went on to break the

:17:56. > :18:02.world record. But a target has been set for van Niekerk. He has got this

:18:03. > :18:07.very good athlete from Botswana, Baboloki Thebe, inside him. The

:18:08. > :18:13.Olympic runs medallist from London in 2012, Lalonde Gordon, he would

:18:14. > :18:19.good in qualification, just outside qualification, like his old self.

:18:20. > :18:27.Boniface Ontuga Mweresa, from Kenny. Came through as the fastest loser.

:18:28. > :18:33.Let's listen to the roaring for Hudson-Smith. Britain's number one,

:18:34. > :18:37.he but he needs to run like that and he possibly got carried away in the

:18:38. > :18:45.heats and he went out hard and he faded. You still run of 45.3 which

:18:46. > :18:48.is not great by his standards. Does she still ran. He is in lane two

:18:49. > :18:52.against the world-record holder and Olympic champion and former Olympic

:18:53. > :19:17.and World Champion LaShawn Merritt. At this level, the semifinal, only

:19:18. > :19:23.the first two make it three. So inside is Baboloki Thebe. LaShawn

:19:24. > :19:30.Merritt outside him. Whoever lead to the heats, it doesn't matter where

:19:31. > :19:36.you look, there is challenge is, van Niekerk starting hard, Addis you

:19:37. > :19:41.would expect. Gordon in the red has gone quickly through 200m. And now

:19:42. > :19:51.the Botswana and coming into it, Baboloki Thebe. Hudson-Smith going

:19:52. > :19:58.well. Van Niekerk has to change. Matt Hudson-Smith, can he get that

:19:59. > :20:04.going? Van Niekerk just wins it. Hudson-Smith just loses out to

:20:05. > :20:15.Abdalelah Haroun. This is warming up! I have been looking forward to

:20:16. > :20:21.this 400m for a one-time! Thebe throwing himself into it. Godunov.

:20:22. > :20:26.All of them want to be this man, van Niekerk. And what a run from Matt

:20:27. > :20:32.Hudson-Smith! What a time to produce his season's best. Not ask any

:20:33. > :20:40.better. I think we will get Michael to talk about van Niekerk.

:20:41. > :20:44.Yes, Steve, van Niekerk does not run this as smart as you would want him

:20:45. > :20:49.to or as he probably would like to given that he has a double, a 200m

:20:50. > :20:55.preliminary tomorrow, trying to run the six races in six days. He runs

:20:56. > :20:59.well here, he has his eye on Merritt. He feels he is in good

:21:00. > :21:03.shape. He does run good here and he wants to out of this curve as we

:21:04. > :21:06.have talked about all week with a weed. He looks to his left and you

:21:07. > :21:14.have to see what is happening and he should have seen his inside and he

:21:15. > :21:18.has to react now and this is hard, kicking into another gear after you

:21:19. > :21:22.have shut it down and restarting the engine is difficult and takes a lot

:21:23. > :21:27.out of you and lactic acid opens up and that is a tough way to run it.

:21:28. > :21:36.Two days in a row now, I'm sure he will be disappointed with that. But

:21:37. > :21:44.a great time, another good qualifier. There we go. Matt

:21:45. > :21:49.Hudson-Smith on the inside. Running a little bit better than he did the

:21:50. > :21:55.other day. This is good, and Thebe with an impressive run and he is in

:21:56. > :22:01.the mix for a challenge on van Niekerk, Steve talked about. With

:22:02. > :22:05.Isaac Makwala later and Fred Kerley if he gets in. Matthew Hudson-Smith

:22:06. > :22:08.running better today than he did yesterday. Learning from that

:22:09. > :22:12.mistake, that is what you want to see. He gets out hard and race pace,

:22:13. > :22:17.this is good running, getting around the bend. His eye on those athletes

:22:18. > :22:22.in front of him. He drew lane two which gives him a perspective on

:22:23. > :22:26.everyone else. A nice long stride. I would like to see him a little bit

:22:27. > :22:32.more relaxed on the back stretch. Now starting to kick it in. Perfect

:22:33. > :22:36.textbook 400m running. Running the first 200 quickly and putting a bit

:22:37. > :22:40.more effort into it around the bend and position yourself as best you

:22:41. > :22:44.can amongst the race leaders, which she does. One of the things you

:22:45. > :22:47.notice here which is great is that he does not look any different at

:22:48. > :22:51.that point compared to the beginning, he is tired, but he can

:22:52. > :22:54.hold technique and form and remain efficient throughout until the

:22:55. > :23:04.finish line. Great running, Matthew Hudson-Smith. Well, sadly, it is a

:23:05. > :23:10.tenth of a second shy of a fastest loser spot, it is brutal at this

:23:11. > :23:14.stage and the quality of the semifinals are there for you to see.

:23:15. > :23:20.That was a good run, a season's best. The winner, 44.22, by a tenth

:23:21. > :23:25.of a second was the world-record holder and he spoke to fill.

:23:26. > :23:38.Safely through, you are headlining this, what is it like to be a part

:23:39. > :23:43.of this? It seems like every time we race, somebody breaks 44 seconds, so

:23:44. > :23:47.it is good competition, I have to be always on my a game. What is the

:23:48. > :23:53.story behind the redrawing of the semifinals, with costs the first

:23:54. > :23:55.word happy new and Kerley and Gardner, that seems expressive. I

:23:56. > :24:00.think you see much whoever changed it because I was not ready for the

:24:01. > :24:06.heats, but it was a surprise to me as well. So it did not come from the

:24:07. > :24:10.South African team? No, not at all. You have safely gone through and you

:24:11. > :24:13.have a busy week, what kind of targets and personal targets have

:24:14. > :24:19.you set yourself? Honestly, I'm just trying to get through the rounds. As

:24:20. > :24:23.Conservative as I can. And hope for the best. The crowd love you here,

:24:24. > :24:29.we love watching your run, all the best. Thank you, take care.

:24:30. > :24:43.Back to the Pole Vault. A new height of four metres and 65. We have seen

:24:44. > :24:48.McCartney get a foul, as has Angelica Bengtsson. Morris goes

:24:49. > :24:53.clear. Another athlete who is a massive contender for the title is

:24:54. > :25:00.American Sandi Morris, the world leader and Olympic silver-medallist

:25:01. > :25:06.and lost on countback last year to a great athlete Ekaterini Stefanidi.

:25:07. > :25:09.Morris is off to a great start with three clearances at her first three

:25:10. > :25:11.heights and the only athlete so far to go clear of this new height of

:25:12. > :25:29.four metres 65. Well, these tough semifinals keep

:25:30. > :25:32.coming in the 400m. As we see Gil Roberts of the USA being introduced,

:25:33. > :25:39.an idea of what is required here. You have to run 44.5 if you are not

:25:40. > :25:44.in the top two to make it through. The new name from Jamaica Demish

:25:45. > :25:52.Gaye. Then this man here, is he going to upset the party Mr Mark

:25:53. > :25:55.Isaac Makwala has seen his partner pushing van Niekerk to the limit and

:25:56. > :26:01.he will be thinking, thank you very much. The Italian David Re, from

:26:02. > :26:06.Italy, he will be delighted to be here, I think. He has a look around

:26:07. > :26:15.and he thinks, goodness me! The Belgian record-holder, Borlee. The

:26:16. > :26:21.personal best goes all the way back to London. And as ever, brilliant

:26:22. > :26:25.indoors with another indoor title this year in Prague in front of his

:26:26. > :26:30.home crowd at the European Indoor Championships, Pavel Maslak. In the

:26:31. > :26:35.world record race in his homeland when van Niekerk broke the record

:26:36. > :26:39.earlier in the season. And the others we did not see, Jamal Walton

:26:40. > :26:47.of the Cayman Islands, he is a massive talent, out on the outside.

:26:48. > :26:55.In Peru, he ran at the Panama Junior Championships and he backed that up,

:26:56. > :26:59.with 44.05. He is only 18. And to add a little bit spice, Cedenio. And

:27:00. > :27:21.Gil Roberts. Just two to go through. Makwala a little slow out of the

:27:22. > :27:29.blocks, but he has got the speed, 200m Bees, and moving up and Roberts

:27:30. > :27:38.who has started quickly, the USA athlete in lane seven. Two on the

:27:39. > :27:43.outside. A big gap appearing, Borlee trying to close the gap and nowhere

:27:44. > :27:52.is it Pavel Maslak. It is Makwala now, Makwala. And look at Makwala.

:27:53. > :27:58.And he continues to go away. Really impressive indeed. And Gaye, that

:27:59. > :28:05.lovely action of his holding it together. And Makwala has time to

:28:06. > :28:13.look around. 44.30. Roberts is third. The clock ticked on too

:28:14. > :28:21.quickly for the American. We will tidy that up. Makwala, the winning

:28:22. > :28:30.time 44.3. Gaye of America continuing to improve and Gil

:28:31. > :28:35.Roberts is out. Well, all three Americans had been ousted from this

:28:36. > :28:39.400m final. That will not please you, Michael, but this is warming up

:28:40. > :28:43.and looking like a cracking event moving to the final on Tuesday. It

:28:44. > :28:49.really is and this guy Makwala was always going to be one of the

:28:50. > :28:52.challenges to van Niekerk. That is beautiful, perfect form down the

:28:53. > :29:00.back stretch, no jerking around. No wasted motion. Just extremely

:29:01. > :29:06.efficient here. He turns it on as you talked about, Steve. This

:29:07. > :29:10.transition from 250 metres to 300 of the bend is just beautiful. Taking a

:29:11. > :29:18.look around, now he can relax and float and glide to the finish. That

:29:19. > :29:23.is the 19.8 speed over 200m, that is what it will get you and very

:29:24. > :29:29.impressive running. Easing up about 20 metres from the finish line,

:29:30. > :29:32.44.30. Nice and smooth, looking at the screen and checking out the

:29:33. > :29:37.competition and making sure he continues to grab the lead. He will

:29:38. > :29:42.double in the 200m is well liked van Niekerk, but shaping up to be an

:29:43. > :29:48.incredible 400m over the next couple of days. It is, Michael. I did you a

:29:49. > :29:53.disservice, your country, Fred Kerley has made it through and the

:29:54. > :29:57.other three have gone out. You are correct, we know already he has

:29:58. > :30:01.declared for the 200 m tomorrow, Makwala. So, 44.30. Roberts is not

:30:02. > :30:15.quick enough to go through. We can look at who will be lining up

:30:16. > :30:27.in the final. 43.80 nine. Nathan Allen. Personal best. Then van

:30:28. > :30:30.Niekerk, Makwala and Kerley. Maybe with Gardiner, I will not say but

:30:31. > :30:47.van Niekerk is still the favourite. The pole vault. This is the

:30:48. > :30:59.favourite. She goes clear. She has waited for one hour before joining,

:31:00. > :31:07.Stefanidi. 4.65 her first effort to get involved in a highly competitive

:31:08. > :31:13.competition. We have Holly Bradshaw waiting for the wind notification

:31:14. > :31:25.from the coach, he will let her know when the wind is optimal. 4.55,

:31:26. > :31:33.slightly scrappy clearance and the bar is now at 4.65, that is better,

:31:34. > :31:43.she came down on that. It be interesting to see back. She will

:31:44. > :31:50.get two more chances to stay in contention. She stays in bronze

:31:51. > :32:00.medal contention even with that. She needs to drive the pole in. There

:32:01. > :32:07.are different stiffness is, this differed the pole, the quicker it

:32:08. > :32:15.recalls. We have another ceremony for the competition last night, the

:32:16. > :32:22.long jump. One of two South Africans on the rostrum. He jumped superbly

:32:23. > :32:30.well. In the absence of the previous champion, Greg Rutherford. The

:32:31. > :32:40.Olympic champion went out in qualifying. This man,, Lawson, took

:32:41. > :32:48.silver, someone to watch going forward. Proving he can compete when

:32:49. > :33:04.the pressure is on. But this was all about one man. This man. He is about

:33:05. > :33:09.to receive his gold medal from an abject poverty stricken background.

:33:10. > :33:21.And he stands on top of the world. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:33:22. > :33:32.Doing the dab. A very popular gold medal for a man who recovered as a

:33:33. > :33:34.social drug addict a few months -- a few years ago, sport saved him and

:33:35. > :35:12.he is the champion of the world. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

:35:13. > :35:22.The biggest smile in the stadium on the face of a new man to many

:35:23. > :35:36.people. Manayuvo losing out on Olympic gold but going one better

:35:37. > :35:41.here. Ahead of Lawson. Look at this. He just keeps his chest up, holding

:35:42. > :35:51.the upright position, cycles his arms and a lovely landing. He has

:35:52. > :35:55.dominated all year, he has jumped 8.65, he came here as the favourite

:35:56. > :36:06.and stood strong and Manyonga is the champion of the world.

:36:07. > :36:14.An incredible story and a wonderful long jump competition. The

:36:15. > :36:21.semifinals of the men's 110 metres Hurdles are coming up and here are

:36:22. > :36:30.the heats from the earlier sessions. Just a little bit on the edge,

:36:31. > :36:46.trying to get into his running. It is the insider. Running out into the

:36:47. > :37:00.headwind over McLeod. He takes it. Kim moving nicely. Allen also moving

:37:01. > :37:11.nicely. King falling back. There was a salute to the crowd from Allen.

:37:12. > :37:21.Merritt away pretty well. Pulling away from the rest. Just pouring

:37:22. > :37:36.over the Hurdles. Clear of the rest and 13.16, he makes this look so

:37:37. > :37:45.easy. Away cleanly. Pozzi in front, moving well. Pozzi takes it from

:37:46. > :38:01.Xie. And the noise from the crowd will greet that British victory.

:38:02. > :38:10.Shubenkov not having the best start. Parchment trying to finish strongly.

:38:11. > :38:13.Ortega eventually got himself going on the inside. These are the

:38:14. > :38:22.qualifiers for the final of the men's 110 metres Hurdles. Merritt

:38:23. > :38:23.looked very smooth. Not giving it his all. McLeod, the Olympic

:38:24. > :38:44.champion. Pozzi winning his heat. McLeod qualifying second fastest

:38:45. > :38:50.from the heats, going in the first semifinal. Steve Cram... What an

:38:51. > :38:52.interesting semifinal the first one is, you have the Olympic

:38:53. > :39:00.gold-medallists and silver-medallists, the defending

:39:01. > :39:07.world champion with Shubenkov, you have got the American champion,

:39:08. > :39:19.Harris. Ortega from Spain, goodness me! That is the way it is. The world

:39:20. > :39:25.semifinals. We will expect the competition, four of the fastest ten

:39:26. > :39:40.in the world so this is a hard one. Masuno from Japan. The Olympic

:39:41. > :39:52.silver-medallists, Ortega, competing for Spain. He did not perform in the

:39:53. > :40:02.European indoor Championships. Trajkovic from Cyprus. You saw that

:40:03. > :40:12.clip of Newman. He did not fight Allen. But he is in great shape. And

:40:13. > :40:23.here he is, the Olympic champion. McLeod. One blot on the landscape

:40:24. > :40:27.this year was in Paris when he had cramp. Any time you win the American

:40:28. > :40:38.110 metres Hurdles championships you have done well. Harris did look

:40:39. > :40:45.lackadaisical -- Shubenkov did look lackadaisical in qualification, he

:40:46. > :40:58.cannot do that here. Authorised neutral, the Russian. We have got

:40:59. > :41:09.three races in this round. Again, the top two and the two fastest into

:41:10. > :41:11.the final tomorrow night. I will whisper this, we have not had any

:41:12. > :41:30.false starts... Yet! Away they get safely, Darien gets a

:41:31. > :41:37.good start along with McLeod. Darien is leading and look at this,

:41:38. > :41:43.Shubenkov could be back into this but Darien hangs on behind the

:41:44. > :41:58.Olympic champion. Shubenkov got left a little bit at the start. We talk

:41:59. > :42:04.about... Holly Bradshaw is about to go, we will chat in a second. Holly

:42:05. > :42:12.Bradshaw waiting patiently during that race. She is still waiting. She

:42:13. > :42:26.must start before the clock gets to zero. 39 seconds left. I'm in

:42:27. > :42:35.charge! That this signal start getting ready, 23 seconds on the

:42:36. > :42:40.clock. She is frowning. I think this is making the wind and bigger factor

:42:41. > :42:48.than it is. She has got ten seconds on the clock. And counting... Five

:42:49. > :42:57.seconds to go. She goes. Second attempt at 4.65. Slow on the band

:42:58. > :43:05.again. That unravelled in those 30 or 40 seconds. She had just one

:43:06. > :43:10.minute, she waited a long time, the yellow flag goes up with 15 seconds

:43:11. > :43:18.and she did not get her pole out early enough. And she poles down a

:43:19. > :43:22.little bit too much, she gets a little kick, it just does not work

:43:23. > :43:29.for her. Just one more attempt but there is still a bronze medal for

:43:30. > :43:38.her if she can continue to go well. Two fouls. Five seconds on the

:43:39. > :43:41.clock, she will have been rushed. For me, detention, negative tension

:43:42. > :43:49.during the build-up, I am not sure about that. Shaking your head?

:43:50. > :43:52.Waiting for the wind. The coach and athlete relationship, you trust the

:43:53. > :43:57.courage to give you information about what the wind is like at the

:43:58. > :44:03.box 30 metres away. You will rely on that. Or you override that and you

:44:04. > :44:10.go. We don't know what that relationship is like. This is just

:44:11. > :44:17.one of a bunch of factors and the wind in the stand and down there, it

:44:18. > :44:21.is tiny, it was a factor in 2012, the exact same scenario. When she

:44:22. > :44:28.came to the stadium, she will think about crosswind, but all year, this

:44:29. > :44:34.is how they train, always talking about it, the other thing is they

:44:35. > :44:39.train a lot indoors in Cardiff, do they get outdoors enough to feel the

:44:40. > :44:45.wind and understand crosswind? I had the same situation with a decathlete

:44:46. > :44:49.my coach, we go outdoors and the crosswind is pushing the pole away

:44:50. > :44:55.from you. Instead of being able to control it. We worked together on

:44:56. > :44:59.these things. We have to have trust in this relationship because there

:45:00. > :45:03.is a medal on offer. And she still has a chance of a bronze medal but

:45:04. > :45:14.she has one more opportunity at this height of 4.65 to stay involved.

:45:15. > :45:22.Nervous pacing up and down from Holly Bradshaw. We can just look

:45:23. > :45:32.here... This was the red-hot semifinal, so

:45:33. > :45:38.many people with the potential of going through. Omar McLeod edged his

:45:39. > :45:42.way through and he did not stress himself, knowing he has the leg

:45:43. > :45:47.speed to match his technique. So through quite comfortably. That is

:45:48. > :45:51.sweat and waiting time but I think at least one of them, Sergey

:45:52. > :45:57.Shubenkov, is the favourite to go through, but let's see. This is

:45:58. > :46:01.McLeod, fastest in the world, under ten seconds as a sprinter. Numerous

:46:02. > :46:08.occasions under 13 seconds this year with the 110. His technique has

:46:09. > :46:12.improved a lot, he brings his trail led troops quicker than he did

:46:13. > :46:24.before, much more consistent, a good balance now. Bless his trail leg

:46:25. > :46:29.quicker. It was a very quick first semifinal. Taking centre stage for

:46:30. > :46:39.much of the crowd here in the second semifinal is the man in lane six.

:46:40. > :46:47.Pozzi. An outside chance of a medal, first to try and make the final. So

:46:48. > :47:00.much can happen in the hurdles. But a very high quality line-up. Hansle

:47:01. > :47:03.Parchment delivers on the big stage. That is Matthias Buhler, the winner

:47:04. > :47:13.of a seventh German title this year, 30 years old now. Came through from

:47:14. > :47:20.the first round. The 21-year-old Cuban Iribarne. Cuba's pedigree in

:47:21. > :47:29.this event... Also in this line-up is Yidiel Contreras. Looking good in

:47:30. > :47:46.the first round was Devon Allen. Shane Brathwaite of Barbados. 27

:47:47. > :47:51.now, A in the heats. Well, he is finally injury free and enjoying his

:47:52. > :47:58.finest year and enjoying these moments, can he make the final? Runs

:47:59. > :48:04.five years ago in the Olympics and silver at the World Championships.

:48:05. > :48:08.When we talk about the big stage, Hansle Parchment loves these

:48:09. > :48:17.occasions. Yidiel Contreras, a Cuban who now runs for Spain. A seasons

:48:18. > :48:26.best in the first round. I just outside the medals last year in

:48:27. > :48:31.Amsterdam, Czykier. He did run 13.28 this season, not near that in the

:48:32. > :48:37.first round. Andrew Pozzi ran a clear race to win his heat, he said

:48:38. > :48:40.afterwards he needs to step it up further in the semifinal and go

:48:41. > :48:48.faster still. Those times in the first semifinal were very quick.

:48:49. > :48:53.Sergey Shubenkov and Orlando Ortega still hoping to go through as

:48:54. > :48:57.fastest losers. Only two go through over the three semifinals and it may

:48:58. > :49:15.require a top two finish to go through. Second semifinal. Pozzi out

:49:16. > :49:21.and Brathwaite moving well. So to Allen and Pozzi train the country.

:49:22. > :49:25.Pozzi hits the front. Over the final barrier, it is so close! He is run

:49:26. > :49:33.out of it, I think automatic qualifying place. Only 13.28. Pozzi

:49:34. > :49:41.was there leading the way with a barrier to go. But he may have been

:49:42. > :49:48.edged out of that. It was so tight on the line, but Pozzi, does he

:49:49. > :49:53.know? Sometimes they know as they go across the line, you can feel the

:49:54. > :49:58.vests out in front of you and Brathwaite is given the victory.

:49:59. > :50:03.Parchment second, so Andrew Pozzi not going through the tomorrow's

:50:04. > :50:12.final in the 110 m hurdles. Devon Allen has been given third. So not

:50:13. > :50:17.going to be good enough for Andy Pozzi and that was painful. What a

:50:18. > :50:22.great race it was but not good enough for Pozzi. We knew it was

:50:23. > :50:28.going to be competitive and tight all the way. Look at the centre of

:50:29. > :50:34.the four lanes. Very close on the season's bests. Allen are clashing a

:50:35. > :50:39.bit with Brathwaite and he left it open for Pozzi. He classes that

:50:40. > :50:45.barrier, causing a bit of stress going into the tenth hurdle. Just

:50:46. > :50:50.snatching back, just 100th of a second. And that is what he has

:50:51. > :50:54.missed out on. That is it at the finish and was entirely that

:50:55. > :50:58.penultimate barrier because he got himself in a great position, running

:50:59. > :51:02.a clean race in the first round and he knew he had to go faster here and

:51:03. > :51:05.he paid the price, straining for the second to last hurdle. He will be

:51:06. > :51:10.really annoyed with himself, he just came off the barrier. Equipped it

:51:11. > :51:16.with the lead and betrayal which causes the dragging the fact. She

:51:17. > :51:21.clipped it. So short to the final hurdle and he just misses out. He

:51:22. > :51:23.will be disappointed. Fine margins, Pozzi misses out and he is talking

:51:24. > :51:30.to Phil. Andy is clearly disappointed to

:51:31. > :51:34.discover you have not made it through to the final and it was the

:51:35. > :51:38.penultimate barrier that did it? Yes, I felt like I had a slow start

:51:39. > :51:45.and I was behind. I came through well. I just lost momentum on the

:51:46. > :51:49.last hurdle. How would you put the emotions right now into perspective

:51:50. > :51:54.considering you have been here before in far worse circumstances

:51:55. > :52:00.and the you have had? I mean, simply, it is not good enough. To

:52:01. > :52:06.not make a final. It is just not good enough. You know, the

:52:07. > :52:11.standards, they are good here, fast time to get into the final. The fact

:52:12. > :52:17.I'm not one of the eight is tough. We appreciate you talking to us,

:52:18. > :52:20.thank you. It makes cruel leading for Pozzi.

:52:21. > :52:26.All down to that second to last barrier.

:52:27. > :52:32.American Devon Allen also misses out. Brathwaite and Hansle Parchment

:52:33. > :52:43.going through automatically and Pozzi missing out in the final.

:52:44. > :52:49.Well, a bit of geography, the hurdles in the background. But in

:52:50. > :52:51.the foreground, it is this thrilling women's Pole Vault competition,

:52:52. > :53:01.Holly Bradshaw getting ready for her third attempt at 4.60 five.

:53:02. > :53:08.Meanwhile, this is an authorised mutual athlete cleared to compete

:53:09. > :53:20.from the Russian team with a failure, Olga Mullina. So she goes

:53:21. > :53:24.out. Bradshaw is next up. We have seen Alysha Newman going clear. I

:53:25. > :53:28.talked about potential outcomes for Holly Bradshaw, but if she does go

:53:29. > :53:34.through and improve, she is a contender for any medal. Making the

:53:35. > :53:41.assumption Sandi Morris and Ekaterini Stefanidi waffle is so far

:53:42. > :53:45.and possibly favourites for the gold, but lots of drama to come.

:53:46. > :53:52.Scott Simpson has taken a back-seat, no, he hasn't. So the same routine

:53:53. > :53:58.begins. What has she got to do here, Tony? It is straightforward and

:53:59. > :54:02.simple, you need to clear the bar. Sorry if that is too simplistic! She

:54:03. > :54:07.needs to run on the runway and get the pole out and be very strong. The

:54:08. > :54:13.idea is you push the pole the way, do not pull down on top and do not

:54:14. > :54:20.force the bend, push it out. Holly Bradshaw a third attempt. At 4.65,

:54:21. > :54:28.she has to get it, and she does! Yes! Willing to jump to stay

:54:29. > :54:34.involved. In front of 60,000 people. Really enjoying that clearance.

:54:35. > :54:43.Holly Bradshaw. Why did she not do that in the first round? Well, Tony,

:54:44. > :54:47.what was different with that jump? I think she ran better and she got the

:54:48. > :54:52.pole out better. Still a bit bent and she is drifting to the right.

:54:53. > :54:56.The top on is a bit bend and the bottom hand was better. Much better

:54:57. > :55:04.view. Watch the right-hand, the backhand. There it is. Slightly

:55:05. > :55:08.bent. And the poll lines in the blocks, and she needs to straighten

:55:09. > :55:16.that up to soften it and allow her to get higher. It is about timing

:55:17. > :55:18.over the bar. Well, that is the reaction of Holly Bradshaw and this

:55:19. > :55:28.is the reaction of her coach Scott Simpson. Yes, slightly more muted,

:55:29. > :55:33.but Holly is one of only seven athletes who has gone clear at this

:55:34. > :55:36.height so a lot of action to come. Another ten centimetres will be

:55:37. > :55:44.added. Holly Bradshaw very much involved.

:55:45. > :55:48.British success but a lot of the crowds deflated at the Pozzi missing

:55:49. > :55:55.out on the second semifinal. This is the last semifinal. Xie Wenjun in

:55:56. > :56:02.four. Silver-medallist Baiji, the Hungarian in five. Eddie Lovett of

:56:03. > :56:08.the US Virgin Islands, a season's best time in the first round. A lot

:56:09. > :56:19.of people will move that affection and support and this man. Aries

:56:20. > :56:24.Merritt winning the limit title here five years ago, so much has gone on

:56:25. > :56:33.in his life since then. And he is back running close to his best. The

:56:34. > :56:40.Canadian Johnathan Cabral. He needs to go faster and he can go faster.

:56:41. > :56:47.And Alkana. He has got one of the quickest times in the world this

:56:48. > :56:56.year, 13.11. But a long way from that in the first round. Things went

:56:57. > :57:08.wrong in his heat. We also did not see $:/STARTFEED.. So Olympic

:57:09. > :57:23.champion Aries Merritt from 2012, the world-record holder. Johnathan

:57:24. > :57:28.Cabral in Cabral. -- eight. Two go through automatically. The last of

:57:29. > :57:40.the semifinals of the men's 110 m hurdles. A good start in the middle

:57:41. > :57:46.by bhaji. Merritt so pure over the barriers. Baji running well. It is

:57:47. > :57:54.Aries Merritt and Baji, Baji just takes it. Not as impressive from

:57:55. > :58:02.Merritt in the semifinal as it was in the first round, a good run by

:58:03. > :58:11.Baji. To take that. The fastest loser comes from both the first

:58:12. > :58:16.semifinal, so Sergey Shubenkov and Ortega go through. So only those two

:58:17. > :58:19.going through. Yes, Baji in the green in the centre of the screen

:58:20. > :58:24.having a good season, solid all the way through in this competition.

:58:25. > :58:28.Aries did not have the same start as he did this morning. Not so

:58:29. > :58:33.aggressive into the barrier and he did not run of the first one very

:58:34. > :58:36.well so he had to do a bit more work to put himself into the second

:58:37. > :58:44.position. And then he can switch off and do his normal rhythmical running

:58:45. > :58:48.which is pretty good. One thing about his return to form, it has

:58:49. > :58:51.been something else. He has been battling with his illness and he has

:58:52. > :58:58.to battle to get his fitness up and get the technical work together. So

:58:59. > :59:03.as a fellow hurdler, I marvel at what he has achieved, it has been

:59:04. > :59:07.absolutely fantastic and he is in another final. In case you are

:59:08. > :59:11.worrying -- wondering what we were talking about, so much has gone on

:59:12. > :59:14.in his life since the World Championships in Beijing, he

:59:15. > :59:19.announced to a struggling with a kidney disorder. His Sydney donated

:59:20. > :59:25.a kidney and he had a transplant and has come back to a position of

:59:26. > :59:27.strength. Not running the same time, but he is safely through, Baji, and

:59:28. > :59:34.we will confirm the finalists shortly.

:59:35. > :59:41.Back to the Pole Vault, America's Sandi Morris, a clean sheet so far.

:59:42. > :59:47.The first ago at this new height that is wide. She is one of the

:59:48. > :59:53.contenders to take gold here. She said she thinks she is capable of

:59:54. > :59:58.something in excess of five metres in a precompetition interview. And

:59:59. > :00:05.that is good evidence to suggest that we should believe her.

:00:06. > :00:13.The difference between Morris and Bradshaw is she goes straight

:00:14. > :00:23.towards the 12 o'clock, straight up, Holly goes towards one o'clock.

:00:24. > :00:31.Great shot of the champion, Stefanidi. 4.75, to match the

:00:32. > :00:38.clearance from Morris, and she does. I mentioned earlier that Stefanidi

:00:39. > :00:45.and Morris are the favourites, we can expect a battle here, they look

:00:46. > :00:52.like a class apart. At these heights that are beginning to eliminate some

:00:53. > :01:01.of the best. We saw the New Zealand Olympic bronze-medallist going out.

:01:02. > :01:08.Holly Bradshaw! 4.75. First attempt! That is close. The crowd is really

:01:09. > :01:14.getting into this. Holly looking to her coach for immediate feedback.

:01:15. > :01:23.Same again, really, as she changed her pole? Would you go stiffer? It

:01:24. > :01:27.will recoil quicker. Just that little kick, it might have hit the

:01:28. > :01:38.bed on the left-hand side, as the pole hits the back, as soon as she

:01:39. > :01:45.gets that out, that higher step down before, curling to the left. That

:01:46. > :01:54.just left double kick. The bend arm at take-off. That could have been

:01:55. > :01:59.taller. That first bend. Her right arm is bend above her head, and that

:02:00. > :02:06.has given her a slightly unclean bend to the pole. She is too far

:02:07. > :02:10.under the pole and the pole is not out early enough. Straight left arm,

:02:11. > :02:19.straight right arm, that is what you need. So, adjustments to be made for

:02:20. > :02:30.Bradshaw. She has two more chances at 4.75. The tall German. The

:02:31. > :02:43.athletes will be changing to stiffer poles. And Ryzih, she looks like she

:02:44. > :02:52.could not handle that. She bails out. She did not time that. This is

:02:53. > :02:58.an event about timing, as you bend the pole, you want your take-off leg

:02:59. > :03:02.to swing long and underneath and go into that classic handstand

:03:03. > :03:13.position. This is the result of the last in the semifinals in the

:03:14. > :03:22.Hurdles. Baji taking that from Merritt. These are the qualifiers

:03:23. > :03:27.for the final, tomorrow. The Olympic champion, McLeod will be the

:03:28. > :03:37.favourite. Dorozhon is there. Parchment. Pozzi just missed out.

:03:38. > :03:43.But Merritt will be there and he has been speaking to fill. Well done. We

:03:44. > :03:51.talk this morning, how did you perform? Pretty good. I wasn't as

:03:52. > :03:56.aggressive at the hold in my warm up, I have tightness in my hamstring

:03:57. > :04:02.so I gradually warmed up and hoped that it loosened up and did so I

:04:03. > :04:08.just tested it to make sure it would not fall off! All systems go, it was

:04:09. > :04:13.fine, but I do not want to injure myself in the semifinals so I wanted

:04:14. > :04:18.to be conservative. But it was solid. You need to be in one piece

:04:19. > :04:25.because it is going to be quite a final, we know what McLeod is

:04:26. > :04:33.capable of, but this is stacked. Yes, we hardly avoid each other! It

:04:34. > :04:37.definitely will be interesting. No secret 's out all! You love this

:04:38. > :04:51.place and maybe that will give you an edge? We will see! Holly Bradshaw

:04:52. > :04:59.in this pole vault, that was a real clutch jump at the previous height,

:05:00. > :05:12.cleared at the third time of asking. The bar is at 4.75, we have seen

:05:13. > :05:20.Morris going clear. And Stefanidi. Silva is next up, the defending

:05:21. > :05:29.world champion from two years ago. Only one foul so far, once at the

:05:30. > :05:36.previous height. This is all about not carrying those failures. That is

:05:37. > :05:45.what rockets you up the leaderboard and only Morris and Stefanidi with

:05:46. > :05:55.clean sheets. Silva is in third place. But there is more to come.

:05:56. > :06:00.Bradshaw in sixth place but all things can change with this new

:06:01. > :06:05.height. Silva is looking really unsure, her clock is about to run

:06:06. > :06:12.out. In fact, it did as she was watching. She was forced to go by

:06:13. > :06:19.the clock. Waiting for the optimal wind. As we could see with Bradshaw.

:06:20. > :06:33.Silva in a similar situation to Holly Bradshaw. Bradshaw waiting for

:06:34. > :06:39.another field event, the shot put final for the men. And this will be

:06:40. > :06:51.a tantalising competition between the Americans. Bukowiecki, the world

:06:52. > :07:01.indoor champion. This promises to be a real battle. Here is Tom Walsh

:07:02. > :07:11.from New Zealand. Olympic bronze in Rio last year, has a season 's best

:07:12. > :07:21.in excess of 22 metres. In a warm up meeting. And fast as ever. That is a

:07:22. > :07:28.solid start for the Kiwi. Just shy of the 22 metres line. He does not

:07:29. > :07:37.look pleased with that. The 25-year-old. He has proven he is a

:07:38. > :07:44.really good competitor, Tom Walsh, with the past couple years. Taking

:07:45. > :07:47.that bronze medal, second in the Commonwealth Games, he takes the

:07:48. > :08:03.lead but it is early days. Right, then. 4.75. Newman. And that was a

:08:04. > :08:10.foul at the first time of asking at 4.75. This looks like it will be the

:08:11. > :08:17.critical height. Potentially, the medal earning height, if Holly

:08:18. > :08:25.Bradshaw can go clear. Only two athletes still to go clear, Morris

:08:26. > :08:35.and Stefanidi. Holly Bradshaw, the normal routine of looking at her

:08:36. > :08:43.coach, Scott Simpson. Sixth and fifth place in the last two Olympic

:08:44. > :08:48.Games. World indoor bronze. Seventh in the World Championships two years

:08:49. > :08:54.ago. She is a serial achiever on the biggest stage. And here she is,

:08:55. > :09:02.mixing things up with the best in the world. She has broken the

:09:03. > :09:09.British record twice in the summer. He is just pointing to the wind that

:09:10. > :09:22.will be a signal that she understands. You are good to go.

:09:23. > :09:30.Holly Bradshaw, the crowd is massively in support and can they

:09:31. > :09:35.left her over this height of 4.75? And bring her back into a medal

:09:36. > :09:42.position? If she goes clear, that will bring her into third spot. The

:09:43. > :09:50.foot down quick, tall on the take-off but slow on the bench. This

:09:51. > :09:56.time with the rock back, not driving, when the pole is vertical,

:09:57. > :10:01.you go vertical. That is what you need, go back across and have a

:10:02. > :10:06.little chat with her coach. She has proven she can do it on the third

:10:07. > :10:09.time of asking, she did that on the previous height. She will have to do

:10:10. > :10:19.that again because that was the second foul on 4.75. She cleared

:10:20. > :10:23.4.81 in Germany a few weeks ago. And 4.80 in the Manchester City Games.

:10:24. > :10:29.She has cleared hides higher than this. But this is different, the

:10:30. > :10:35.World Championships, the pressure is on. That is a lot of conversation

:10:36. > :10:41.from a coaching point of view. I don't know what you were like in

:10:42. > :10:48.terms of getting feedback but when I stood a defence, I still try to do

:10:49. > :10:59.it, two points, short and sweet, that is all you can handle. I think

:11:00. > :11:03.you are right, two commands is optimal but this is a tight

:11:04. > :11:09.relationship, Holly Bradshaw and Scott Simpson. Look at this, this is

:11:10. > :11:17.a very high carry as the pole is planted. Slightly bend again at

:11:18. > :11:20.take-off, maybe Andrew Black. Her feet are too close to the take-off.

:11:21. > :11:30.Difficult to see with the scoreboard in the way. This is a better angle,

:11:31. > :11:37.wait, right now, she starts to rock back to early, the pole is bend. You

:11:38. > :11:42.want to drive longer. Time that rock back later so when the pole goes

:11:43. > :11:46.vertical, she can go vertical, simple fix. That is probably the

:11:47. > :12:00.discussion they had. Just a little bit of time. Back to the shot put.

:12:01. > :12:12.Kovacs. Big rotator. Well, chasing that lead of 21.38. I would expect

:12:13. > :12:20.some of these players will settle into this. Six throws from the top

:12:21. > :12:28.eight. And Kovacs is highly anticipated to be a big contender,

:12:29. > :12:40.he goes into the lead. 21.48. Here is the big man. The Olympic

:12:41. > :12:51.champion. From last year. Crouser. He is one of the tallest and

:12:52. > :12:56.heaviest of all athletes, 124 kilos. That is a lot of body to rotate

:12:57. > :13:01.around that circle. He have to wait for that, he doesn't like it.

:13:02. > :13:06.Showing some nerves. He may be wanted to just get one throw to book

:13:07. > :13:12.his place and get through the cut. Only the top eight will make the cut

:13:13. > :13:21.after three attempts. Find your rhythm early. That is the key and

:13:22. > :13:31.Crouser is looking nervous. In third place with 21.07. Behind Kovacs.

:13:32. > :13:35.Holly Bradshaw. These are the moments where medals are won and

:13:36. > :13:41.lost. This is a chance to maybe think about what she needs to

:13:42. > :13:55.change, what input has the coach given me? And then execute that. The

:13:56. > :14:00.Heptathlon sweeping behind, the first heat of the final event of the

:14:01. > :14:07.Heptathlon. Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the third and

:14:08. > :14:19.final heat. When the medals will be allocated. Thiam expected to get

:14:20. > :14:28.gold in that. Before that, another British athlete in action. Holly

:14:29. > :14:35.Bradshaw, as we watch Silva. If there is any athlete capable of

:14:36. > :14:40.dealing with the pressure, it is her. One of the most experienced,

:14:41. > :14:51.the clock will be an issue, the wind is coming into their faces. Silva.

:14:52. > :14:57.Much lower carry. Well... The second failure for the reigning champion.

:14:58. > :15:08.Questions asked of her. In third place as we stand. The shot put.

:15:09. > :15:24.Storl. Capable of challenging for the lead. That is Kovacs.

:15:25. > :15:30.That is down on what he is capable of, twice World Champion in the

:15:31. > :15:40.past. He has dominated in years gone by. A smile, he knows that is not

:15:41. > :15:43.anything like what he is capable of. A lot of athletes rotating, the old

:15:44. > :15:57.style, now he is gliding, the big German. A nervy throw, a lot of the

:15:58. > :16:04.athlete spinning out. The power. So a foul from Storl in the opening

:16:05. > :16:18.round. Well, Holly Bradshaw is waiting. Alysha Newman of Canada,

:16:19. > :16:22.third and final jump. I was going to say it is low on the approach, it

:16:23. > :16:30.looked as though she decelerated, very deliberate. And the Canadian is

:16:31. > :16:40.out. She is in seventh place, it you can see Bradshaw is in sixth place.

:16:41. > :16:44.And this, well, one of the most important jumps of her life. This is

:16:45. > :16:54.the moment she has practised for, she has streamed about. And all

:16:55. > :17:01.those long winter months of training, to her head right here and

:17:02. > :17:07.right now. This is your time, Holly Bradshaw, go clear and you may get

:17:08. > :17:12.yourself a medal. A clearance would put her in a really solid place, a

:17:13. > :17:22.failure and she is out. Really simple, do or die situation. Go, go

:17:23. > :17:26.coach Simpson. Right. Holly Bradshaw, the Blackburn athlete,

:17:27. > :17:34.striding out, third attempt at 4.75. It is better. Oh, that was her best

:17:35. > :17:46.attempt! She looked over it. But it is a failure. At 4.75. Sixth place.

:17:47. > :17:51.Similar to what she has done at major championships in the past, but

:17:52. > :17:55.there was a chance. It was a big chance. It looked like a better

:17:56. > :18:01.chance. I think so, but you can see how the pole is still bent and she

:18:02. > :18:07.is trying to go vertical, she is missed timing the rock back. Really

:18:08. > :18:12.unfortunate, great competitive vault. Look at the height. Looking

:18:13. > :18:16.at it from this angle, she could have cheated, it is not cheating, by

:18:17. > :18:21.moving the stands forwards. If they had been there the forwards, she

:18:22. > :18:24.could have cheated her way over it, because you can adjust them, it is

:18:25. > :18:29.allowed, it is not really cheating. The pole has not uncoiled so the bar

:18:30. > :18:35.is closer to you. Look at the high point. The bar is in the wrong

:18:36. > :18:38.place. That's soft vault, no, a lack of bend and she should have pulled

:18:39. > :18:44.the stands forwards. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and they apologised.

:18:45. > :18:50.Yes, disappointing for her, but Holly Bradshaw, a third time fairly

:18:51. > :18:58.at 4.75. Sixth place at a World Championships is something to be

:18:59. > :19:02.very proud of. STUDIO: Holly Bradshaw, what a

:19:03. > :19:07.shame. We all jumped up and we thought that was it, she was keeping

:19:08. > :19:12.us on the edge of our seats. Sadly, she is out that competition after

:19:13. > :19:17.such a early season, in particular that British record she got in

:19:18. > :19:20.Manchester. Back in June. She's disappointed because she knows she

:19:21. > :19:25.is better and she could have been pushing for the medals, Denise.

:19:26. > :19:31.Yes, a shame, it is so technical and so many factors to consider, but she

:19:32. > :19:35.gave it her best shot and she had the height but it wasn't meant to

:19:36. > :19:39.be. It felt like she was really putting a lot of emphasis on her

:19:40. > :19:43.coach and his opinions, Michael, when she was going to go and watch

:19:44. > :19:49.was doing. She was not in her own head. I would ordinary say that, but

:19:50. > :19:52.having listened to her earlier, I get the sense that she is an athlete

:19:53. > :19:56.who can do that and who can listen to the code and also who knows when

:19:57. > :20:00.she is going to overrule the coach and go, you are doing your thing,

:20:01. > :20:07.but I need to get going because now is when I am in it. For a lot of

:20:08. > :20:11.athletes, I might say, yes, not so much interaction, but this seems

:20:12. > :20:15.like her mindset is a little different and she can handle that so

:20:16. > :20:18.I will not question that. It you find yourself looking over the Tony

:20:19. > :20:23.at certain times and other times feeling more the need... Yes, the

:20:24. > :20:27.Pole Vault is a technical event and you need your coach to support you

:20:28. > :20:30.and give you feedback. There were definitely occasions I looked the

:20:31. > :20:35.Tony for advice at other times, I just had to almost block everything

:20:36. > :20:40.out and trust my own ability and what I have done day in and day out

:20:41. > :20:45.and go and do it. Not overcomplicate things. I think sometimes, that can

:20:46. > :20:52.make it difficult. We are about ten minutes away from the 800m, the last

:20:53. > :20:55.from the heptathlon, two gruelling days for the women, the seventh

:20:56. > :21:05.event for Katerina Johnson-Thompson and the rest of the field. The story

:21:06. > :21:08.now to bring you up to speed. Well, the noise in the stadium is

:21:09. > :21:11.steadily building because everybody here is getting ready for the

:21:12. > :21:16.women's kept tabs on featuring none other than Great Britain's Katerina

:21:17. > :21:21.Johnson-Thompson and everybody has a ticket here and they are in for a

:21:22. > :21:31.treat. Going well indeed, not so good from

:21:32. > :21:38.Nafi Thiam. Work to do for Katerina Johnson-Thompson. But Nadine Visser

:21:39. > :21:44.going well for the Netherlands. Johnson-Thompson much ground to make

:21:45. > :21:48.up and 40 trees grow gets it. It is all about the time.

:21:49. > :21:53.You had a good look at KJT, how is she looking? Yes, she did not get

:21:54. > :21:57.the best start and looked worrying. But she ran a good time. I think she

:21:58. > :22:12.will take a bit of confidence from that.

:22:13. > :22:15.Best attempt now. 1.8-0. Great start from KJT.

:22:16. > :22:19.She has chosen to pass. It is a smart move, you want to be a job

:22:20. > :22:27.best when the bar is actual highest. It was a tactic Kat hoped would pay

:22:28. > :22:30.off in the morning but having passed at 1.86, she failed at her attempts

:22:31. > :22:36.and 1.86. Three fails here would be a

:22:37. > :22:40.nightmare. Johnson-Thompson, 1.86, last attempt.

:22:41. > :22:46.No! Oh, my gosh! That is a massive disappointment for

:22:47. > :22:52.Johnson-Thompson, she knows it. Olympic champion Nafi Thiam showed

:22:53. > :22:57.her class to jump in the first place after two events at 1.95. If KJT

:22:58. > :23:02.needed a confidence boost Commission would not expect it in the Shot Put.

:23:03. > :23:04.At best at the major championships suggested she might be turning the

:23:05. > :23:10.corner. It is damage limitation. A season's

:23:11. > :23:15.best from Nafi Thiam and a personal best from Germany's Carolin Schafer

:23:16. > :23:19.meant there was an exciting battle for gold. Under the lights, it was

:23:20. > :23:24.time for the 200m. She comes driving on, chasing down

:23:25. > :23:27.the time, no competition from the rest. Carolin Schafer is well

:23:28. > :23:31.running strongly and running well, but Katerina Johnson-Thompson lists

:23:32. > :23:37.and pushes and strides towards the line, a huge gap from the rest.

:23:38. > :23:41.A Portu hundred from Thiam meant Carolin Schafer spent the night at

:23:42. > :23:47.the top of the standings. A new day, new hope for KJT. First up, Long

:23:48. > :23:52.Jump. Is she hungry enough to jump the

:23:53. > :23:57.jump of her life? She needs it. Come on, Kat! It is a huge jump, KJT may

:23:58. > :24:03.have just jumped right back into contention for the medals here.

:24:04. > :24:07.The Thiam and Schafer battle continues at the top and for KJT,

:24:08. > :24:13.the slightest glimpse of a medal. And there were to be more reasons to

:24:14. > :24:19.be cheerful in the javelin. It is over 40 metres. Exactly what she

:24:20. > :24:28.would have wanted. A monstrous last throw sent Anouk

:24:29. > :24:33.Vetter in the bronze contention. The longest ever in a World

:24:34. > :24:40.Championships heptathlon. Only a sensational 800m will do for KJT.

:24:41. > :24:46.She is a very good 800m runner and she has a fantastic, potentially one

:24:47. > :24:50.of the best in the field, but a big gap now between her and the top

:24:51. > :24:56.three positions and it really looks like she is too far away. I would

:24:57. > :25:00.have to be a 17 second swing for Katerina Johnson-Thompson to get

:25:01. > :25:05.herself into those medal places. That throw from Anouk Vetter in the

:25:06. > :25:11.javelin today has put her right back in contention. Let's go back out the

:25:12. > :25:22.Steve Backley with news about a Pole Vault competition. Yes, it is news

:25:23. > :25:26.about the Holly Bradshaw situation. She couldn't have been closer. She

:25:27. > :25:34.is distraught. After seeing what happened afterwards, she realises

:25:35. > :25:39.that the 19-year-old Venezuela has taken bronze with the same

:25:40. > :25:44.clearance. Clearing it on the second attempt, Holly Bradshaw on her

:25:45. > :25:48.third. That has cost a bronze medal. In simple terms, it could not have

:25:49. > :25:58.been closer to a medal for Holly Bradshaw, but she is in sixth place.

:25:59. > :26:02.She is heartbreaking day she is heartbroken and sobbing,

:26:03. > :26:06.inconsolable. Denise. It is hard when you come into a championships

:26:07. > :26:09.fit and ready and mentally sharp and do not deliver what you expect

:26:10. > :26:16.Commission wanted a medal and she was capable, but this is sport. I

:26:17. > :26:22.imagine you want to start again. She knows what she did, she knows she is

:26:23. > :26:27.ready, and at this point, is alone. She does not have anybody that and

:26:28. > :26:30.it is a very lonely place. It is and you are right in the centre and you

:26:31. > :26:33.can't control your emotions when you feel like that. You just want to

:26:34. > :26:37.roll it back and you are thinking, what could I have changed? That

:26:38. > :26:45.moment has completely passed. It is devastating for her. This is, these

:26:46. > :26:47.are the situations that are very different, you want to roll it back

:26:48. > :26:53.because you know exactly what you could have done differently. But

:26:54. > :26:57.this is sport and you can't roll it back. And you have to learn from

:26:58. > :27:01.this experience and move on. But it affects you as an athlete when you

:27:02. > :27:07.know exactly what you could have done. And I think that Holly will

:27:08. > :27:15.take this and learn from it and be able to move forward with it.

:27:16. > :27:24.The last runners for the heptathlon, 800m, those imposition to strike for

:27:25. > :27:27.the medals. It was the top four going for the podium finish and

:27:28. > :27:32.Katerina Johnson-Thompson has just done, she has loved herself with too

:27:33. > :27:38.much to do. It really will go back to the High Jump were potentially,

:27:39. > :27:41.over 100 points is left out there. Yes, she came back fighting, and she

:27:42. > :27:46.came back with the Shot Put which was not great, but sensational 200

:27:47. > :27:50.m. The game today, she has come back strong and it was great to see the

:27:51. > :27:55.throw in the javelin. But the High Jump is a high-scoring event and it

:27:56. > :27:59.just went so wrong for her. It is and it is heavily waited, but in the

:28:00. > :28:07.past, that has stood her in good stead. She has a personal best of

:28:08. > :28:13.1.98. Here she is, Denise. I think it is hard. Just let her take the

:28:14. > :28:18.APPLAUSE. It is one thing she will do, run her heart out in this 800m,

:28:19. > :28:22.that is all she has got left. That is not trying to paint a different

:28:23. > :28:26.picture, it is the reality. She is fast and she can go out in style.

:28:27. > :28:31.She can cross the line first and give the sense of the crowd

:28:32. > :28:33.appreciating the last two days. Why colleague, Michael, she will feel

:28:34. > :28:40.she should have done differently. She should have done more. The

:28:41. > :28:42.question is, will she be able to go back and pinpoint exactly what she

:28:43. > :28:46.could have done differently throughout this competition that

:28:47. > :28:52.would have made a difference and will she be able to pinpoint that

:28:53. > :28:56.and see the consistency and where the failures have come from in her

:28:57. > :29:00.major competitions and take that forward? That is the question. That

:29:01. > :29:05.is the Olympic champion Nafi Thiam who is well in the lead. She is not

:29:06. > :29:10.the strongest in this event, but she has enough to retain that gold Medal

:29:11. > :29:18.and to make herself the Olympic and World Champion. I think Thiam has

:29:19. > :29:24.shown she is the most amazing athlete, she has conducted herself

:29:25. > :29:33.throughout as the champion Shias, fantastic this competition. Nafi

:29:34. > :29:38.Thiam, the Belgian athlete, who is in the lead, leading the way in this

:29:39. > :29:44.competition. She is in a fantastic position after two days. And the

:29:45. > :29:50.Olympic Stadium where she burst onto the scene, Katerina

:29:51. > :29:54.Johnson-Thompson. Welcome to BBC Two viewers who have joined our coverage

:29:55. > :29:58.of the World Athletics Championships, a couple of minutes

:29:59. > :30:00.away from the last event of the heptathlon, the 800m. Katerina

:30:01. > :30:04.Johnson-Thompson needs the run of her career and she needs others to

:30:05. > :30:10.be below par to make it onto the podium. It is possible and BBC One,

:30:11. > :30:15.stay here to see this race and the conclusion of the heptathlon.

:30:16. > :30:19.Baldock will follow and the athletics will continue on BBC Two.

:30:20. > :30:24.So out onto the track to join Steve Cram.

:30:25. > :30:28.Thank you, and let's have a look at the start list. She is in fifth

:30:29. > :30:35.place, as we have said. The athletes ahead of her, if anything were to

:30:36. > :30:40.happen, Anouk Vetter has had a fantastic competition and Schafer

:30:41. > :30:50.and Thiam in medal conditions. Not much between them. Thiam is safe in

:30:51. > :30:53.the gold Medal position. KJT would have to do something nobody has ever

:30:54. > :31:03.done before. We will go through these one by one. Williams on the

:31:04. > :31:09.outside. For the trees grow. Klucinova. The athletes in

:31:10. > :31:13.descending order. -- Nadine Visser. Look at the personal best, that is

:31:14. > :31:17.something to note. I was going to say that Katerina Johnson-Thompson

:31:18. > :31:26.has to do something nobody has done before in the sense that her own

:31:27. > :31:31.personal best is 2.76. The fastest heptathlon in the final of the World

:31:32. > :31:34.Championships was 2.57. fastest ever heptathlon I can find

:31:35. > :31:42.in the final was two point 05. Jess has run 2.0 seven. She would have to

:31:43. > :31:48.go to war three seconds quicker to put any pressure at all on Vetter,

:31:49. > :31:55.who is not a good 800 metres runner. Rodriguez is in fourth place. She

:31:56. > :32:02.has a personal best of 2.12. We hope Kat can run quick enough to go into

:32:03. > :32:06.fourth. Vetter and Schafer look to be too distant, but, and it's a

:32:07. > :32:16.massive but, the slimmest of chances. Vetter and Chef -- Vetter

:32:17. > :32:22.and Schafer no medal is theirs. Thiam has been supreme, the Olympic

:32:23. > :32:27.champion. Nothing spectacular from the first event. Even that hurdles

:32:28. > :32:32.yesterday wasn't her best, but she's been solid all the way through and

:32:33. > :32:39.that high jump, oh dear, how much that has cost Katarina

:32:40. > :32:48.Johnson-Thompson. The final event of the heptathlon, the 800 metres. What

:32:49. > :32:53.does a coach say? There isn't any other instruction than just run as

:32:54. > :32:59.hard as you can. To do that in the 800, you have to be sensible. It's

:33:00. > :33:04.an interesting thought. I asked Jessica to be sensible another of

:33:05. > :33:16.times and the best of 2.07 summit she ran 59 seconds for the first

:33:17. > :33:24.400! Salman-Rath has run 28.75 for the first 200. To put that into

:33:25. > :33:31.context, that's 56 at the bell, two laps of that. 1.52? I don't think

:33:32. > :33:38.they will run 1.52 so rhythm is important. She has to run a big

:33:39. > :33:41.personal-best. Win this race, Johnson-Thompson, with the crowd

:33:42. > :33:51.behind her. She can't affect what happens behind her. The others have

:33:52. > :34:00.16 or 16 seconds. -- 16 or 17 seconds. Look at Rodriguez. She has

:34:01. > :34:05.a big gap between herself, she's in fourth place, and she's committed

:34:06. > :34:09.herself massively. She's gone with it. Schafer wants to put some

:34:10. > :34:14.distance between herself and Vetter so she can get silver. Katarina

:34:15. > :34:21.Johnson-Thompson responding. Has she got anything for the last 200

:34:22. > :34:29.metres? The German is out in front. Can she raise her game? She's giving

:34:30. > :34:34.it a go. The others are way too close for her to get a medal.

:34:35. > :34:39.Salman-Rath still leading. Katarina Johnson-Thompson trying to chase her

:34:40. > :34:44.home, doing her best, giving everything. Rodriguez is fading. We

:34:45. > :34:53.look for the battle behind. Watch the clock. It's going to be about

:34:54. > :35:01.2.07. Katarina Johnson-Thompson will be close to a personal best. Here

:35:02. > :35:10.they come behind. Vetter crosses the line in about 2.19. About 12

:35:11. > :35:14.seconds. Sadly it won't be enough to affect the medals. It means Schafer

:35:15. > :35:20.will move into the silver medal position. I don't know whether or

:35:21. > :35:28.not Rodriguez has moved up... He's shaking her head. Schafer will get

:35:29. > :35:34.bronze. Thiam the gold-medallist. Not always across the line first,

:35:35. > :35:38.but another supreme competition from the Olympic champion. A case of what

:35:39. > :35:50.might have been for Katarina Katarina Johnson-Thompson gave it

:35:51. > :35:57.everything. It was just too big of a gap, a brilliant run. And that is it

:35:58. > :36:00.for the athletics on BBC One, time for the final of Poldark. The

:36:01. > :36:03.athletics continue on BBC Two. ..this season,

:36:04. > :36:04.the whole game in full It's been a knockout day

:36:05. > :36:09.in the Premier League.
