:00:25. > :00:33.Michael Johnson storming away to another gold medal. Magnificent.
:00:34. > :00:41.Carl Lewis. That is history in the making. Jessica Ennis-Hill is back
:00:42. > :00:45.on top of the world. It's massive. A new world record. Champion of the
:00:46. > :01:03.world. Use sane Bolt. -- Usain. #1 One more time for Mo Farah. Time and
:01:04. > :01:07.time again he's delivered. In front of his home crowd, in the city he
:01:08. > :01:15.knows so well, the city that he loves. The track, that set him on
:01:16. > :01:20.this brilliant journey over the last five years and Mo Farah comes to the
:01:21. > :01:27.front. Mind games of the highest quality. He says, guys, it's been
:01:28. > :01:31.good, it's been hard, it's been tough, but is this all you've got so
:01:32. > :01:35.far? Because you need to find something else. Be careful, Mo, get
:01:36. > :01:42.on to the outside. It's never been as quick as this or as hard as this.
:01:43. > :01:50.Fancy chasing this? The British best with the heart pounding beneath it.
:01:51. > :01:51.Mo Farah stretches away. He's a one-man world super-power. It's gold
:01:52. > :02:12.for Farah. Incredible! Yep, it's been raining all day, cats
:02:13. > :02:19.and dogs. I'm sure where you are too. Certainly London has not seen a
:02:20. > :02:23.day this for quite a while. These championships haven't seen rain like
:02:24. > :02:29.this. The track is sodden and so are the fans. Bring a hat, bring a
:02:30. > :02:34.change of clothes, it's going to be a long night in this rain. Of course
:02:35. > :02:38.we will update you if the schedule changes which is expected for
:02:39. > :02:44.certain events. If you have a brolly and some toppers, then you can still
:02:45. > :02:48.have a good night here. We've some great athletics in spite of this
:02:49. > :02:55.great British summer we're experiencing right now. Welcome to
:02:56. > :02:58.England, Michael Johnson! LAUGHTER We've been fooling you with these
:02:59. > :03:04.clear skies for the last week or so I was like, where am I? Now I know
:03:05. > :03:10.where I am. Now you've got your vest on. Den east, Paula, welcome this
:03:11. > :03:17.wet evening. Exciting because Mo's back in town? He is. For the 5,000
:03:18. > :03:21.metres. Should be a pretty easy night. Distance guys are used to
:03:22. > :03:26.running in the rain. We get out and on with it. He has his heat and
:03:27. > :03:32.followed by Marc Scott and Andrew Butchart. Throwing is tricky. Men's
:03:33. > :03:36.hammer qualifying and three women in the long jump qualification. There's
:03:37. > :03:40.talk of that moving to the pit that is the driest rather than having two
:03:41. > :03:45.pits on the go. That's the sensible decision. We've high hopes for all
:03:46. > :03:48.of our three British girls getting into that final. It will be tricky
:03:49. > :03:54.out there. Slippy board. Very challenging indeed. And the 200m
:03:55. > :03:58.semi-finals. Will they be bothered by these conditions? They may be
:03:59. > :04:04.bothered but everybody has to run in the same conditions. It's raining in
:04:05. > :04:07.every lane. The issue of warm-up is difficult when it's raining for
:04:08. > :04:13.sprinters. You'd prefer cold over rain but you have to get on with it
:04:14. > :04:18.like the distance runners do. Little bit of needle between the two there.
:04:19. > :04:22.Love it! Last night was all about the men's 400m final. It was billed
:04:23. > :04:31.throughout the championship and build-up that it would be one of the
:04:32. > :04:36.great events of these championships with Neikerk going for the double.
:04:37. > :04:43.But there was twists and turns because of the non-start he missed
:04:44. > :04:51.200m heats and wasn't allowed to run in that 400m final. It was one of
:04:52. > :05:02.the most eagerly anticipated events of these championships. A showdown
:05:03. > :05:06.to save our. Neirerk against one lap wonder a bottoms Juan an intent on
:05:07. > :05:12.halting any immediate Coronation. Only for a bug in the system to
:05:13. > :05:21.create a right royal mess. Tonight at 6.00pm. Athletes at the World
:05:22. > :05:29.Championships hit by norovirus. The spread of gastroent right Is at the
:05:30. > :05:33.hotel saw Makwala fall ill. I had my 200 heats. They took me to the medal
:05:34. > :05:39.room. I waited for about 30 minutes. There was nothing. Makwala was
:05:40. > :05:48.forced to withdraw from the 200m heats denying him the chapel enon
:05:49. > :05:53.Niekerk. There was still to's 200m final. He couldn't race in that
:05:54. > :05:58.because of quarantine regulations. When he was told he had the illness
:05:59. > :06:04.he tried to leave. One of my other senior members of the staff brought
:06:05. > :06:11.him back in because we have an outbreak of gastroenteritis in the
:06:12. > :06:17.hotels and it is highly infectious. The Botswana delegation insisted
:06:18. > :06:21.Makwala was ready and fit to run. Had his heart rate which was 60 and
:06:22. > :06:28.body temperatures. He's fit and very well. He's prepared to run and he's
:06:29. > :06:33.being kept away from the IAAF. He turned up at the stadium last night
:06:34. > :06:37.making a pock Errie of the quarantine restrictions and was
:06:38. > :06:44.turned away. The IAAF put forward their case as to why Makwala could
:06:45. > :06:49.not compete. My responsibility is to ensure the health care of all the
:06:50. > :06:55.athletes. It is a virulent disease. The decision was based on public
:06:56. > :07:02.health issues but it is the manner on which this decision arrived on
:07:03. > :07:06.was disturbing. His absence was eventually issued at 9.45 when he
:07:07. > :07:15.would have been preparing to take his position in the blocks. 400m
:07:16. > :07:19.final. Wade van Niekerk with the empty lane already making up the
:07:20. > :07:26.stagger. This is where van Niekerk starts to go away. Gardener trying
:07:27. > :07:34.to come through. Van Niekerk looking for the line. Van Niekerk is the
:07:35. > :07:39.world champion again. After I saw him crossing the line I was like,
:07:40. > :07:44.there's something fishy they don't want to tell us here. Usain Bolt is
:07:45. > :07:49.here. They want somebody to be the face of it. There are a lot of
:07:50. > :07:53.fingers being pointed right now. I know he's ill. So much sympathy for
:07:54. > :07:57.him. I really wish I could give him my medal. This is sports. These
:07:58. > :08:01.things happen. Each and every one of us need to go out there and fight
:08:02. > :08:06.for our opportunities. It could have been any one of us. The South
:08:07. > :08:11.African will now chase 200m gold in a bid to emulate the great Michael
:08:12. > :08:18.Johnson as champion of the double. Makwala is simply left feeling sick.
:08:19. > :08:27.I feel disappointed for this. They broke my heart. That was Isaac
:08:28. > :08:31.Makwala talking this after in into. As this story's been so incredibly
:08:32. > :08:34.unbelievable and the twists and turns in the last 24 hours, you'd
:08:35. > :08:39.expect there to be another. There is. It happened around an
:08:40. > :09:09.hour-and-a-half ago when the IAAF issued this statement:
:09:10. > :09:15.So, Isaac Makwala lives to fight another day. We'll see him on this
:09:16. > :09:25.track tonight. It just feels it's 24 hours late in terms of all the
:09:26. > :09:28.aggravation and unnecessary upset it caused the Botswana ns. If that
:09:29. > :09:36.statement had been issued this time last night, it could have stopped
:09:37. > :09:39.all that? Absolutely. If we had gotten this information yesterday
:09:40. > :09:43.with this sort of detail, then, yeah, it would have saved a lot of
:09:44. > :09:50.people a lot of anguish, frustration and confusion. I think the primary
:09:51. > :09:55.beneficiaries of that would have been Isaac Makwala who showed up
:09:56. > :09:57.here last night confused and the IAAF who've come under intense
:09:58. > :10:03.scrutiny and criticism because of the way this was handled. It also
:10:04. > :10:08.would have helped us to provide accurate information to our viewers
:10:09. > :10:11.who were wondering why Isaac Makwala wasn't in the 200m heats the other
:10:12. > :10:17.day and not here last night in the final. We would have been better
:10:18. > :10:21.prepared to inform our viewers who are relying on us to let them know
:10:22. > :10:25.what's going on. The delegations came up to the studio to try and put
:10:26. > :10:30.their case to us. Clearly, a lot of people have been sick. They were the
:10:31. > :10:35.ones most vocal in terms of trying to get some justice, as they felt
:10:36. > :10:41.it, for their runner. Do you feel the right thing has been done? The
:10:42. > :10:45.words of van Niekerk in his interview, the opportunity for all
:10:46. > :10:50.athletes and Isaac Makwala will get an opportunity to show what he's
:10:51. > :10:54.got. It's tough. I'm sure he's been through an emotional roller-coaster.
:10:55. > :10:59.The speculations will continue. For eyes sack tonight, he gets a chance
:11:00. > :11:04.to show what he's got. He's prepared so well for these championships.
:11:05. > :11:08.Raced brill APTTly on the Diamond League championships. The guy's 30.
:11:09. > :11:15.Hopefully tonight he gets the opportunity to take that. A lesson
:11:16. > :11:18.learnt. Every permutation and avenue, something might happen, you
:11:19. > :11:24.need to think ahead about these things. This is a big lesson learnt
:11:25. > :11:28.for them? It is a big lesson learnt for everyone, to be honest. We
:11:29. > :11:37.probably need to learn lessons from it. The IAAF needs to. The
:11:38. > :11:42.organising committee. Paula, there's a lack of communication which led to
:11:43. > :11:48.all of this? The lessons weren't learnt before now this needs to be
:11:49. > :11:52.communicated. Athletes need to be sure. There are still lack of
:11:53. > :11:57.communation and different stories. It was communicated to him, I think,
:11:58. > :12:02.he was told his accreditation would be void if he came down and tried to
:12:03. > :12:09.compete last night and tried to go into the warm-up area. All of those
:12:10. > :12:14.errors and miscommunication, it was a really difficult swayings for
:12:15. > :12:20.everyone to adapt to. The easiest way in that situation is to be as
:12:21. > :12:22.open as possible, put as much communication and correspondent out
:12:23. > :12:27.there to explain to the athletes. They are the ones who are losing
:12:28. > :12:32.that chance. It could have been any one of them. In the statement it
:12:33. > :12:39.says as according to our rules. This could have been given out as a
:12:40. > :12:43.possible outcome yesterday if there is this possibility in existence?
:12:44. > :12:47.You would think so. They are saying they cannot do anything at this
:12:48. > :12:52.championships which doesn't fit within the IAAF rules. We've never
:12:53. > :12:57.seen this situation before? It fits their rules. We've a spare lane in
:12:58. > :13:02.the semifinal. We can advance him if he makes the time without penalising
:13:03. > :13:07.any other athlete in there. It can be done. Not going against any of
:13:08. > :13:10.the health advice given would have been an outcome that would have been
:13:11. > :13:15.possible to relay yesterday, 24 hours ago? Absolutely. It would have
:13:16. > :13:21.washed all the speculations. There were so many moving parts yesterday.
:13:22. > :13:25.So many changes. Even as the evening went on. We sit here trying to
:13:26. > :13:29.fathom it as we're working it all out. As I said, it's just about the
:13:30. > :13:35.athlete. I would fight tooth and nail to run out there if that was
:13:36. > :13:41.me. If I felt well, I would want to be on that track. They had aprobably
:13:42. > :13:47.have to put me in cuffs to stop me. I also think as the President of the
:13:48. > :13:50.bottoms Juan an federation articulated, they don't want to put
:13:51. > :13:55.anyone at risk and do whatever needs to be done in the interest of public
:13:56. > :13:59.health, it is the way it was communicated is what he had a
:14:00. > :14:05.problem with and we all had a problem with. No-one wants to pub
:14:06. > :14:09.public safety at health. The IAAF needed to do what they needed to
:14:10. > :14:15.protect athletes and officials involved. But you have to explain
:14:16. > :14:19.that to everyone clearly and up front and put all of the information
:14:20. > :14:23.out there so everyone understands what they're dealing with how these
:14:24. > :14:30.decisions have been made. At 6. 40, the gun will go. He'll run on his
:14:31. > :14:35.own a time trial. He'll have to run quicker than 20:53. Lima's time of
:14:36. > :14:40.Portugal. The slowest time. He can do that easily we know. He's a
:14:41. > :14:43.sub-20 runner in these conditions. At least one incidence of being ill
:14:44. > :14:48.and throwing up, do you expect him to be able to do that tonight? He
:14:49. > :14:53.should be. We have to say, you see he's going to have to run in the
:14:54. > :14:58.rain. It's a little bit cool. His conditions today are different to
:14:59. > :15:01.the conditions two days ago during the qualifying process when it was
:15:02. > :15:09.nice weather, warm and it wasn't raining. But, that's well within his
:15:10. > :15:14.capability. He's run 19.74 this year. It is difficult to run by
:15:15. > :15:18.yourself without the aid of competing against others. I'm sure
:15:19. > :15:24.he'll have a tremendous amount of support from this crowd. But he's
:15:25. > :15:28.going to have to also come back, provided he does make it, into the
:15:29. > :15:32.semifinal. He'll have to come back about two hours later to line up and
:15:33. > :15:38.run in the semifinal. I think that can happen. He will take this one
:15:39. > :15:42.round at a time. Deal with this and get to that semifinal first. The two
:15:43. > :15:46.hours later will have a bit of an effect on him. It will look a little
:15:47. > :15:54.weird. Athlete out there running by himself. We saw this last year in
:15:55. > :15:58.Rio during the Olympics with the US 4x100m team running for a qualifying
:15:59. > :16:05.time because someone knocked the baton out of their hand. China got
:16:06. > :16:12.disqualified. A fantastic start list there!
:16:13. > :16:20.Seven, because I have been told it is the driest. It gets a tiny bit of
:16:21. > :16:26.shelter from the roof. If anywhere, it is hardly even dry in here, the
:16:27. > :16:30.atmosphere is so damp! That is at 6.40pm and hopefully by then, a few
:16:31. > :16:34.more people will have come here because we have had some medal
:16:35. > :16:39.ceremonies and they will want lots of support. We can look at that 400
:16:40. > :16:55.metres final. Steve Cram called it. And where they go, the crowd rising
:16:56. > :17:01.for the last event tonight. Wayde van Niekerk, already making up the
:17:02. > :17:06.starter. Trying to get away from Gardner. He always goes through the
:17:07. > :17:13.first 200 quickly and he has to map again. Curly from United States is
:17:14. > :17:24.running well. Van Niekerk starting to go away. It is Wayde van Niekerk
:17:25. > :17:30.at the moment! Gardner is charging. But Van Niekerk is starting to tire
:17:31. > :17:38.out. But he is a world champion again! 43.9 eight. They did their
:17:39. > :17:45.best but they could not hang onto his shirt-tails. Lane 7 because that
:17:46. > :17:49.puzzling he was going to have originally, ironically the leg he
:17:50. > :17:57.was going to be in, and seven is his lucky number! -- that was the lane.
:17:58. > :18:02.We can hear from Van Niekerk after that
:18:03. > :18:10.Congratulations on another gold medal. All this hard work, how does
:18:11. > :18:14.this feel? It is very special, it is my third gold medal in three years
:18:15. > :18:20.and I give thanks to the Lord for blessing me with my talent and I
:18:21. > :18:25.thank God I took this opportunity. The warmth from the crowd was
:18:26. > :18:31.incredible, you are known globally and the embrace was just so warm? It
:18:32. > :18:35.was amazing, I had to put on a good show and it was tough but it might
:18:36. > :18:40.well. What did you know about Isaac Makwala not being allowed to
:18:41. > :18:46.compete? I am just as heartbroken as he is. And how hard he has been
:18:47. > :18:59.working. And his form has come together and it is a pity. And I
:19:00. > :19:04.wish himself and his running mate a speedy recovery. You must come back
:19:05. > :19:11.for the 200 metres tomorrow! Michael Johnson in the studio, going for the
:19:12. > :19:17.double, trying to copy him? Yes, it's not easy, lots of hard work,
:19:18. > :19:23.let us take this one by one, and if all goes well, I have the final, and
:19:24. > :19:30.I will give it more. We love seeing you running, congratulations, again.
:19:31. > :19:35.Thank you for the support. Six races in six days for Wayde van Niekerk,
:19:36. > :19:40.coming age of the end, semifinal tonight, did that take it out of him
:19:41. > :19:46.last night? I don't think so, he is capable of running much faster than
:19:47. > :19:51.last night, he was able to ease off at the end of the race, the issue in
:19:52. > :19:57.the past is just fatigue with the 400 metres and if he is recovered
:19:58. > :20:06.properly and has a good regeneration strategy then he should be fine. I
:20:07. > :20:13.think 200 metres, given the level this year, without Usain Bolt, Andre
:20:14. > :20:19.de Grasse is not in this race, that cleared a path for him. It will not
:20:20. > :20:23.be as difficult as it had been. Isaac Makwala has the fastest time
:20:24. > :20:27.in the world this year so depending on how he can recover from his
:20:28. > :20:32.situation and get through tonight, he could still challenge in the
:20:33. > :20:42.final. When you did this, it was eight races? Over seven days. Little
:20:43. > :20:50.bit harder? I know you don't want to say thanks Mike if I say that, it is
:20:51. > :20:54.a problem! How did you manage your own recovery? You have to train
:20:55. > :20:58.knowing that I am going to be going through eight different races in
:20:59. > :21:03.seven days and you have to train from that and it will take a great
:21:04. > :21:06.deal of endurance, not just in the race but over that period so you
:21:07. > :21:14.have to train for that. You train with short repetitions and recovery
:21:15. > :21:17.and employee recovery and regeneration strategies for every
:21:18. > :21:23.day after you finish those races, active recovery and massage and all
:21:24. > :21:30.that sort of thing. It is a lot of work. Long days. Once you finish the
:21:31. > :21:36.race, there is still a lot of work to do and that is how I was able to
:21:37. > :21:43.do that in 95. Thank you. We are moving because last night was also
:21:44. > :21:47.the men's 800 metres final. And Kyle Langford, who came here ranked 40th
:21:48. > :21:49.in the world, had high hopes for himself. Steve Cram and Brendan
:21:50. > :21:59.Foster... In middle distance running, tactics
:22:00. > :22:04.are crucial, you have to get things right and have a plan and you watch
:22:05. > :22:09.what others do and change if you have to. McBride will be thinking
:22:10. > :22:15.about getting out. I know that Amos and his coach will be shoving to get
:22:16. > :22:20.behind him, the Canadian is leading. And that is the pushing and shoving
:22:21. > :22:26.they were worried about. Always in the opening 200 metres, it is
:22:27. > :22:31.testing, you have to be very careful, you cannot go too quickly
:22:32. > :22:37.unless it catches up with you later. Amos does not want any more of that
:22:38. > :22:41.and begins to move close to take close order to the front running
:22:42. > :22:48.Canadian, Kyle Langford in a very good position. That is too quick,
:22:49. > :22:55.they are going to slow down and I think Kyle Langford coming from
:22:56. > :22:59.behind will get some opportunities. He has been sensible through the
:23:00. > :23:05.first 400 but he has to stay in touch because they are moving up.
:23:06. > :23:11.Faster moving up on the outside, look at him and trying to attack,
:23:12. > :23:17.Amos cannot get through. He can hold him off. Here they come, the
:23:18. > :23:27.Frenchman has got to the front. Langford still at the back Amos does
:23:28. > :23:35.not look like he has got much, here. Kyle Langford is coming! Bosse! In
:23:36. > :23:47.front! Langford is still coming. Bosse gets the gold. Kyle
:23:48. > :23:54.Langford... Almost... Almost got the bronze medal. I wish you had got it,
:23:55. > :24:00.mate, but I don't think you are quite there. A couple of inches.
:24:01. > :24:10.You can hear his voice, he has joined us in the studio. It was
:24:11. > :24:15.really annoying! That is putting things mildly! Running out of track
:24:16. > :24:19.like that. Another few metres and that was yours? It was a horrible
:24:20. > :24:25.thing because give me another ten metres and I would have been going
:24:26. > :24:31.for Gold! It is one of those things. How many times have you seen that
:24:32. > :24:36.already? I watched a bad YouTube video in the evening with my
:24:37. > :24:43.roommate, Elliot, it was very blurry and I watched it also a few times
:24:44. > :24:50.earlier. The BBC iPlayer! I have been busy all day! I have been off
:24:51. > :24:59.my feet! On Five Live you said you had not slept? And not today either.
:25:00. > :25:02.Anything can happen in this interview! Not sleeping because you
:25:03. > :25:08.were celebrating but stuff going through your mind? I were
:25:09. > :25:15.celebrating just being in my bed! Please fall to sleep! It did not
:25:16. > :25:22.happen. Adrenaline. Could I have done this or that? It was a mix of
:25:23. > :25:29.things, I don't really know. I did not know how to feel about the whole
:25:30. > :25:34.situation. I was feeling happy and privileged to be racing in the final
:25:35. > :25:39.but I knew going into the race that I wanted to win a medal. I said from
:25:40. > :25:45.the start of the season, something I really wanted to do and I felt like
:25:46. > :25:51.I could do it and being so close, just falling a little bit short, it
:25:52. > :25:58.is gutting. The cruellest of positions, the first time, so this
:25:59. > :26:04.she thought he was going to do at! So close! The more times you watch
:26:05. > :26:08.it, you think you are going to get their but that gives you the
:26:09. > :26:12.confidence to build on, if somebody said at the beginning of the year,
:26:13. > :26:16.you will be in the World Championship final in London and
:26:17. > :26:20.will finish fourth and just that close to the bronze medal, you would
:26:21. > :26:27.not have believed it but that will give you believe going forward? I
:26:28. > :26:34.think my brain works in a very weird way. At times I would take that end
:26:35. > :26:40.and sometimes, no way, I want to win. I don't know what it is, I am
:26:41. > :26:45.quite a bad loser. I am respectful of losing to my opponents. But I
:26:46. > :26:52.don't like to lose, I always want to win. I do not know if that is a good
:26:53. > :26:56.mentality. That is a great mentality and we love hearing young athletes
:26:57. > :27:02.staking their claim to what they want to be, you said you wanted to
:27:03. > :27:09.take over the mantle of Mo Farah. We have you next to his cushion! I just
:27:10. > :27:16.want to be the best I can be. I want to make a difference in athletics,
:27:17. > :27:22.on and off the track. I really love this sport. I could be a big help to
:27:23. > :27:26.Ed, hopefully. You have hopefully a very long and illustrious future.
:27:27. > :27:35.Paula Radcliffe had a look at the race. Significant moments. You can
:27:36. > :27:41.talk through from the way you were looking at this. You did not do
:27:42. > :27:46.anything wrong. You wanted to run similarly to the semifinal and at
:27:47. > :28:00.this point, it was well set up. What were you thinking? Had you noticed
:28:01. > :28:04.that Bosse was going? I do that Kushot was going to go at some point
:28:05. > :28:13.and I would have liked to have been further up, more boxed in. And I did
:28:14. > :28:22.not see Bosse going. I switched off a little bit and did not like where
:28:23. > :28:27.I was. Going back with 120 metres left, you are just one split second
:28:28. > :28:36.later following Kushot, was that intentional or the crowd helping
:28:37. > :28:43.you? It was a mixture of things. I could hear the crowd getting louder
:28:44. > :28:50.every metre and I think it was that I could feel myself and it was
:28:51. > :28:56.really good, I do not know if it was an experience in the way that I did
:28:57. > :29:03.not really know what to do because I was going through at the right pace,
:29:04. > :29:07.I did not know or expected was going to be so fast, it was cold and windy
:29:08. > :29:12.but I did not want to be at the back. What shall I do? I cannot
:29:13. > :29:19.believe so much is going through your mind! I was about to say that.
:29:20. > :29:25.This is a new situation for you, it will take a few more races of this
:29:26. > :29:30.calibre to work out where you sit, when do you attack, what is your
:29:31. > :29:36.strategy? I am sure you had one but such a fantastic race! It is nice to
:29:37. > :29:42.see an 800 metres runner having the place that you have, which is truly
:29:43. > :29:47.staggering. What have you done in the last few weeks or months to
:29:48. > :29:51.prepare yourself for this moment? It was a change from the heats to the
:29:52. > :30:00.semifinal, something clicked in my mentality over the last 100, before
:30:01. > :30:04.I always had an OK kick and I could carry that but it was not as good as
:30:05. > :30:12.others and I went back after the heat and I have been doing Hurdles,
:30:13. > :30:19.small Hurdles, driving my knees. We ended up looking at my races and
:30:20. > :30:25.there was no driving from my knees, my legs were just flinging at the
:30:26. > :30:29.back. I remember getting into the semifinal and the crowd was going
:30:30. > :30:38.crazy and I just thought, Hurdles drills, left my knees. I was just
:30:39. > :30:42.propelling forward. And I remember the last 15 metres, I was sinking, I
:30:43. > :30:53.looked at the clock, I will not get a personal best, and then I felt, I
:30:54. > :30:54.will have to qualify and I thought, I will have to recover for the
:30:55. > :31:03.final! In my head I was thinking, I've made
:31:04. > :31:07.this through. You need to store that up. You need to store where your
:31:08. > :31:14.mind was for the races to come. Where your mind was in the semifinal
:31:15. > :31:18.and the final was the right place. And the heats, maybe you put a
:31:19. > :31:21.little pressure on yourself. There was pressure coming in. Coming into
:31:22. > :31:25.the final you really had nothing to lose. Let's face it, two years ago
:31:26. > :31:30.you were winning juniors. Now you're up on the senior stage. It's a big
:31:31. > :31:37.jump. You've made a really strong jump. Now to consolidate there, the
:31:38. > :31:43.winner last night raced out of his skin but was fourth last year. Those
:31:44. > :31:48.progressions are within your reach now. The thing that gives me
:31:49. > :31:54.confidence is not that I come from the world stage, it's more how far I
:31:55. > :32:01.was away from actually winning. I watched the race back and think to
:32:02. > :32:05.myself, I could have won that if I positioned myself a little further
:32:06. > :32:12.up. I didn't feel any lactic going into the last 100. I don't know if
:32:13. > :32:17.it was the adrenaline in the crowd. I felt I could have gone a bit
:32:18. > :32:21.harder, got a bit more involved. These things I'll learn and take
:32:22. > :32:29.into the Commonwealth and world indoors. Are you going to stay with
:32:30. > :32:33.us? Yeah. Mo is back in the house tonight. Brendan Foster caught up
:32:34. > :32:37.with him the morning after he won the 10,000 metres on Friday. Caught
:32:38. > :32:39.up with him on Saturday morning. It was a bit drier then. They had a
:32:40. > :32:58.good old chat. Legend. Hey, I tell you what!
:32:59. > :33:04.COMMENTATOR: Time and time again, he's delivered. One more time for Mo
:33:05. > :33:09.Farah. In front of his home crowd in the city he knows so well, the city
:33:10. > :33:13.that he loves, the track that set him on this brilliant journey.
:33:14. > :33:18.Congratulations that was a fantastic performance last night. It was a
:33:19. > :33:23.pleasure to be there. Never nervous? Yesterday was different for me
:33:24. > :33:28.knowing it would be the last 10K. I was quiet yesterday. People were
:33:29. > :33:34.like, what's wrong, Mo? Yesterday, you were going pretty quickly. I was
:33:35. > :33:39.pretty close this year. I knew something was going to happen. The
:33:40. > :33:43.last ten years, they were saying how they'd beat me and what they were
:33:44. > :33:47.going to do. They never follow. Fair play to them, they followed this
:33:48. > :33:51.year. One of the toughest of my career.
:33:52. > :33:56.COMMENTATOR: He orchestrates the race. I'm telling the people, I've
:33:57. > :34:02.got the whole nation behind me. What do you have that can help me out?
:34:03. > :34:06.Never been as quick or hard as this. 3,000 metres I was hurting and
:34:07. > :34:08.tired. A lot of elbows. That race was crazy.
:34:09. > :34:14.COMMENTATOR: This is phenomenal racing. 800 m out and I kneel got a
:34:15. > :34:18.couple of trips. I thought, they're not going fast enough to beat me.
:34:19. > :34:22.Try to control it where you feel good and have something left for the
:34:23. > :34:24.last lap and go for it. That was my plan.
:34:25. > :34:28.COMMENTATOR: The British best with the heart pounding beneath it. When
:34:29. > :34:33.you crossed line, tell us? It was beautiful. Beautiful. I really
:34:34. > :34:40.enjoyed it. That one moment which can't be forgotten. It won't be
:34:41. > :34:45.forgotten, Mo, it was a great race. COMMENTATOR: Super power. Gold for
:34:46. > :34:54.Farah. Are you excited about next weekend? Arsenal. Away to Leicester?
:34:55. > :34:59.Right? Not Arsenal. Sorry. Mo Farah, 5000 metres. Physically OK? Few
:35:00. > :35:04.scratches. Few bruises. Will have to take care of it. I have to rest up
:35:05. > :35:09.now and think, whatever happens, happens. It is a new race. Heats
:35:10. > :35:14.tonight for Mo although not much heat around here, let me tell you.
:35:15. > :35:21.You said you want to emulate him, Kyle. That's what you have to do. A
:35:22. > :35:26.lot of golds there. Easy! You better get started soon! I know. How can
:35:27. > :35:32.you not be inspired by that? Just the way he is. I don't know, I envy
:35:33. > :35:37.it. A wonderful person for you as a 21-year-old athlete to have to look
:35:38. > :35:44.up to. He's moving on after these championships. There will be a void?
:35:45. > :35:48.Middling distance in general's looking really, really good in
:35:49. > :35:52.Britain. The 1500 this year has been amazing. The 8 stepped its game up.
:35:53. > :35:57.There are a lot of youngsters coming through. I think we're on the verge
:35:58. > :36:04.of breaking through something really special here. That was one question
:36:05. > :36:08.I was going to ask you, how difficult has it been transitions
:36:09. > :36:15.from the juniors? A few athletes have come through. Has it helped you
:36:16. > :36:20.prepare for the stage? The futures helped me massively. When there was
:36:21. > :36:24.a problem and I didn't know who to go for futures was there. It helped
:36:25. > :36:29.sort out my injuries. Jo Jennings was the person behind it. She was
:36:30. > :36:37.great. She helped. I was doing testing. I got out to Kenya. That
:36:38. > :36:43.really got me from my junior stage, pushed me on. I remember 2015 and I
:36:44. > :36:47.ended up running in Beijing, my first senior competition. That
:36:48. > :36:51.really, really helped me. It is a really, really good programme for
:36:52. > :36:57.these youngsters to help pursue their career. We saw your mum and
:36:58. > :37:01.dad last night. Your family were so enthusiastic, so supportive of you
:37:02. > :37:06.ahead of the race. They were going to give away free chips today if
:37:07. > :37:11.there was a medal. Did they extend it to fourth? I don't know. I kind
:37:12. > :37:15.of get to the point, like a couple of weeks before the competition, I
:37:16. > :37:24.just don't speak to anyone. That looks lovely. Don't! If Kyle has
:37:25. > :37:30.inspired you and, remember, it's not that long ago he was a young junior
:37:31. > :37:33.runner, running out there in probably cross country, school
:37:34. > :37:39.races, you fancy it and think you've talent go on to the BBC Sport
:37:40. > :37:45.website and it will tell you where you can join a running club. My son
:37:46. > :37:48.is a realing fan. You're lighting up lights across the country. Thank you
:37:49. > :37:53.so much for coming in and joining us here. Continue the good work. Next
:37:54. > :37:57.year, Commonwealths and European podium finishes for you? Definitely.
:37:58. > :38:01.I will be very disappointed if I don't. That's what I'm striving to
:38:02. > :38:07.do. Thank you for having me. Thank you. A pleasure. You're going to
:38:08. > :38:12.Watford? No, I'm going to stay here. It's a little rainy. I'm bit of a
:38:13. > :38:16.girl when it comes to that! Let's get out on the track. It is a little
:38:17. > :38:22.bit rainy. How are these conditions going to affect eyes sack Makwala?
:38:23. > :38:26.It was always the loneliness of the long distance runner but the
:38:27. > :38:31.loneliness of the short distance sprinter tonight?
:38:32. > :38:35.COMMENTATOR: He'll get a lot of support from the crowd. Most people
:38:36. > :38:39.surely following his story. Been in touch with his camp over the last
:38:40. > :38:44.half hour or so. They say he's feeling good. He's been a bit
:38:45. > :38:50.stressed, understandably. He hasn't been told exactly what will happen.
:38:51. > :38:55.He'll get lane 1 in the semi if he does run 24.53. He's been given lane
:38:56. > :39:02.7 because that's what he was drawn in the heats. The fact he wasn't in
:39:03. > :39:07.the heats meant the young junior Italian got through into the
:39:08. > :39:12.semifinal. If it is semifinal 3 with Danny Talbot in, it is really tough,
:39:13. > :39:16.van Niekerk's in that one as well, the normal protocol is you go into
:39:17. > :39:21.the last of the semi-finals. They might look at that. The only time I
:39:22. > :39:30.can remember this, we've talked about the relay. In 2002 in Munich,
:39:31. > :39:33.Paul Brizzel ran into a camera, impeded, he came back in the
:39:34. > :39:40.afternoon and ran on his own in lane 8 or 9. He didn't get through, I
:39:41. > :39:45.remember. So, Makwala, much easier task for him. Lane 7. It's raining
:39:46. > :39:49.heavily but it's dry where he starts. Dry around the bend. He'll
:39:50. > :39:58.get wet about 50 metres from the line. I think... Well, as long as he
:39:59. > :40:06.can concentrate on himself, that's all he can do. There's a start list.
:40:07. > :40:11.A bit odd, lane 7, Isaac Makwala. Time trialling, athletes do that all
:40:12. > :40:14.the time, run on their own. But it's still got to be difficult
:40:15. > :40:18.psychologically? He has to pick himself up. He's had a tough couple
:40:19. > :40:25.of days. For him, it will be refocusing on the job in hand. He
:40:26. > :40:30.has a specific time, 20.53. He has to beat that. In lane 7. Pretty dry
:40:31. > :40:33.most of the way. The crowd are just starting to cheer him now. They know
:40:34. > :40:38.his story. Don't worry about the fact he has to return in a couple of
:40:39. > :40:44.hours. He is that 400m runner. He has the endurance. He should be
:40:45. > :40:51.fine, Steve. Might help him. A bit more warmed up than the others.
:40:52. > :40:58.Isaac Makwala, denied the chance to run in the 400m final. All of the
:40:59. > :41:03.story that's unfurled over the last 48 hours, just incredible. It boils
:41:04. > :41:10.down to this. He has to run 20.53 seconds or quicker. Given that he's
:41:11. > :41:15.run 19.77 this year, admittedly much better conditions than this that he
:41:16. > :41:27.is facing this evening, he has a lot of room for error. Please don't make
:41:28. > :41:36.a fallings start, Isaac. CHEERING
:41:37. > :41:45.It's been a dramatic two days for the wrong reasons for Makwala
:41:46. > :41:52.Botswana. He just needs to concentrate and then we'll see him a
:41:53. > :41:54.bit later on, I'm pretty sure. The crowd will undoubtedly try to row
:41:55. > :42:01.him home here. Safe start. Listen to the crowd.
:42:02. > :42:05.They really are getting behind him. Don't run on the line either Isaac.
:42:06. > :42:10.Don't run on the line. Here he comes around the bend. He's going well. In
:42:11. > :42:16.fact, he's going very well indeed. What a sight this is. A lone athlete
:42:17. > :42:30.on his own against the clock. Athletics at its best. 20.20! Had.
:42:31. > :42:40.Ha, ha, ha. That is a message to the IAAF saying, I'm fit and healthy.
:42:41. > :42:44.Well, well, well. How bizarre. I don't think there's anything other
:42:45. > :42:52.than goodwill towards Isaac Makwala each from the IAAF. I saw the letter
:42:53. > :42:56.sent to the bats Juan an team officials saying good luck to Isaac.
:42:57. > :43:02.We want him to succeed. I think you're right. No hard feelings. It
:43:03. > :43:06.was an unusual circumstances. Difficult situation. None of us had
:43:07. > :43:10.seen it before. They were trying to create something that was right for
:43:11. > :43:15.all. Actually seeing him on the track now and performing in this
:43:16. > :43:19.way, I think he should be happy he's through and the IAAF will breathe a
:43:20. > :43:26.sigh of relief feeling they've done the right thing. Which semifinal
:43:27. > :43:33.does he go into? Michelle Blake is in the first semifinal. Van Niekerk
:43:34. > :43:40.in the third. The third is very, very tough. Were he do go into that
:43:41. > :43:44.one he'd meet Danny Talbot and van Niekerk. The British team must be
:43:45. > :43:51.thinking, one of the big contenders not there. He is there now though.
:43:52. > :43:57.He will be there. Perhaps semifinal 3. It will be interesting. Looks how
:43:58. > :44:04.he proves he's fit, ready to go. Hitting those press-ups hard. Steve,
:44:05. > :44:11.can you do press-ups like that? I can do loads more than that. Was it
:44:12. > :44:17.three? I can do at least eight! The first time I've seen slow motion
:44:18. > :44:28.action replays of press-ups. Some of those would be disallowed in a
:44:29. > :44:37.Supperstars. He's just run 200ms. Remember that! I don't think we have
:44:38. > :44:42.a result caption. I think we know what happened there. It was quick,
:44:43. > :44:47.wasn't it? Well done Isaac Makwala. For a moment there on the bend, I
:44:48. > :44:52.thought he'd go out of his lane. It must be hard not having another body
:44:53. > :44:58.next to you? It is. You don't have that guide to go off of. It was
:44:59. > :45:02.interesting listen to Crammy, it's going really well. How can you tell.
:45:03. > :45:07.There's nothing to measure against the fantastic opportunity for him.
:45:08. > :45:12.I'm so pleased he's been allowed to get himself back into this 200
:45:13. > :45:17.metres. This is tough. To go out there and run alone by yourself, I
:45:18. > :45:20.mean, to get out there, it's a strange situation. I'm sure he's
:45:21. > :45:24.never done this before. Yeah, you just run. Athletes will run time
:45:25. > :45:29.trials from time to time in training. You have to look at it
:45:30. > :45:35.that way. He's a veteran. He knows what to do. He's very quick. You
:45:36. > :45:40.just have to try to treat it like a time trial and practice. Work on,
:45:41. > :45:44.it's all speed and it can kneeing at that point. Just executing the
:45:45. > :45:51.strategy. There's no racing, no competition. Just some analysis of
:45:52. > :45:56.that, I think, maybe there are five push-ups there, three of them maybe!
:45:57. > :46:05.There's van Niekerk watching. I'm sure he would have wanted Makwala to
:46:06. > :46:10.be in that race as well and will as he said in his press conference,
:46:11. > :46:14.wishes he could give him his own medal. You want your top competition
:46:15. > :46:16.there. We'll have that now at least in the semifinal. It will be
:46:17. > :46:20.interesting to see how they determine which one he goes into.
:46:21. > :46:24.Hopefully, it won't take too much out of him for the final. Should he
:46:25. > :46:31.make it through the semifinal tonight. Thank you, Michael. Den
:46:32. > :46:36.eyes, you're delighted he did it and got himself that time?
:46:37. > :46:43.It what you want to see. You want to see them getting the chance. The
:46:44. > :46:47.best who have all year been producing the goods, you want them
:46:48. > :46:50.to be on the biggest stage. It is about medals and there is a medal
:46:51. > :46:56.ceremony about to take place behind me. You might recognise that music.
:46:57. > :47:04.It is the men's 3,000 metre steeplechase. Andrew Cotter.
:47:05. > :47:13.So the winner on the podium. Kenyan born athlete. They have dominated
:47:14. > :47:16.this event. 39 medals in the 3,000 metre steeplechase and 30 have been
:47:17. > :47:29.won by Kenyanser or Kenyan born. It is Kenya's gold again and it is
:47:30. > :48:43.Kipruto who will hear the National Anthem.
:48:44. > :48:50.They don't have flags being raised. They are just there but the American
:48:51. > :48:59.with the bronze. The Moroccan the silver. The gold for Kenya. Kipruto
:49:00. > :49:08.the Olympic champion takes the world title now.
:49:09. > :49:12.Aston Northern Irishing record they have in the steeplechase, Kenya, and
:49:13. > :49:27.it continues here, in London. There is the result of what do you
:49:28. > :49:31.call it, I don't know, the rerun, 20.2. The time trial for Isaac
:49:32. > :49:35.Makwala, which I have been on the computer there, they have not yet
:49:36. > :49:39.changed or added him to the semifinalist for this evening. Those
:49:40. > :49:43.are the qualifier, as I said Mitchell-Blake is in the first of
:49:44. > :50:01.the semifinals, he has been drawn in, Danny Talbot has van Niekerk
:50:02. > :50:11.again, and he has Guliyev. Zharnel Hughes and Blake in there as well.
:50:12. > :50:15.Names to watch out for. And then, tz fastest pleaser, the reason it was
:50:16. > :50:23.20.53, you can see that qualifying time. He couldn't match that, then
:50:24. > :50:26.there would have been a tie. So he has had to run 20.53. We will keep
:50:27. > :50:33.an eye on the computer for the semifinals.
:50:34. > :50:38.Just going to stay out for the medal ceremony of the men's 800 metres. We
:50:39. > :50:43.have just been listening to Kyle, what a great race from him. Can't
:50:44. > :50:49.believe he hasn't gone to seize his girlfriend race in Watford tonight,
:50:50. > :51:07.a right soft clart! He thought he was ahead there. Had a chat earlier
:51:08. > :51:10.on with Kszczot. He was still pleased to have got the Silver
:51:11. > :51:15.Medal. This young man here, the junior
:51:16. > :51:26.champion, we will hear more of him, didn't run a great race. An untidy
:51:27. > :51:32.one for him. I was chatting to Nigel's coach and says there was a
:51:33. > :51:37.bit of pushing with them. It is important, he knows how to do that
:51:38. > :51:44.well. A great race. That is two Silver Medals in a row. He won the
:51:45. > :51:51.silver in Beijing two years ago. Made it a European one-two. Nearly a
:51:52. > :52:05.European one-two-three if Kyle had sneaked in.
:52:06. > :52:14.The World Champion... From France. Was a bit of pushing with them. It
:52:15. > :52:17.is important, he knows how to do that well. A great race. That is two
:52:18. > :52:19.Silver Medals in a row. He won the silver in Beijing two years ago.
:52:20. > :52:21.Made it a European one-two. Nearly a European one-two-three if Kyle had
:52:22. > :52:23.sneaked in. The World Champion... From France.
:52:24. > :52:26.Was a bit of pushing with them. It is important, he knows how to do
:52:27. > :52:29.that well. A great race. That is two Silver Medals in a row. He won the
:52:30. > :52:32.silver in Beijing two years ago. Made it a European one-two. Nearly a
:52:33. > :52:33.European one-two-three if Kyle had sneaked in.
:52:34. > :52:36.The World Champion... From France. "The Boss". I don't know if you had
:52:37. > :52:39.a chance to look at his post race interview, not one with us but he
:52:40. > :52:41.was entertaining, in some of his comments, he is a real character.
:52:42. > :52:44.And he was at his best afterwards, and why not? What a Gold Medal, what
:52:45. > :53:02.a performance from him. He sort of stole it. He was brilliant.
:53:03. > :53:48.Brilliant. He sang every single word and each step, he said when I got to
:53:49. > :53:51.the front I thought I might win this. He said I got to the home
:53:52. > :53:58.straight and thought I can win this and so he did. He was cheered home
:53:59. > :54:10.round the top end. Look at that. Gold Medal for France. Brilliant run
:54:11. > :54:16.from Bosse. Well, the rain keeps on coming, the
:54:17. > :54:20.rollers are out, trying to clear sections of the track, and the
:54:21. > :54:23.runway for the long jump to make them a bit more safe, a little bit
:54:24. > :54:39.faster. Matthew Hudson-Smith. 400 metre
:54:40. > :54:43.runner, must be a bit of relay practise out there tonight Denise. I
:54:44. > :54:48.assume so. Get the legs moving, but, it is wet out here, isn't it. It is
:54:49. > :54:52.miserable. It is not nice for the athlete this is part of sport, they
:54:53. > :54:57.have to get on with it. It is not affecting his fame, clearly.
:54:58. > :55:17.Oh, the hedgehog is getting soaked as well.
:55:18. > :55:25.So to the ceremony for the men's 400 metre final. We saw Wayde van
:55:26. > :55:29.Niekerk sitting in the stands beneath, watching Isaac Makwala
:55:30. > :55:37.qualify for the 200 semifinal, that is where we will see van Niekerk
:55:38. > :55:43.later on of course. It wasn't a vintage run for him. He ran as well
:55:44. > :55:46.as he needed to. He said he wanted to make sure he conserved energy
:55:47. > :55:53.through all the round, he will be a busy man. Taken on the double here.
:55:54. > :55:57.This was his main event. This is his number one event, which he was never
:55:58. > :56:04.going to relinquish, even without Makwala. He was always the
:56:05. > :56:11.favourite. There was a surprise for the bronze
:56:12. > :56:18.medal. A former Sudanese athlete who finished quickly. He did in the
:56:19. > :56:21.rounds on the outside. I think he was in Matthew Hudson-Smith's semi
:56:22. > :56:26.and in the final, he finished quicker than anyone, he was last at
:56:27. > :56:31.the top of the home straight and yaim away with the bronze. Of course
:56:32. > :56:37.next World Championships they will be in his home country as it were.
:56:38. > :56:44.In Doha, 2019. I am sure Steven gardener will be there, he is one of
:56:45. > :56:48.the bright talents. Ran sub 44 in the semifinal. A good performance to
:56:49. > :56:54.take the Silver Medal. Not as quick, looked as though the semi took a bit
:56:55. > :57:01.out of him. He is a nice athlete to watch run as
:57:02. > :57:06.well. The Olympic champion. And the two
:57:07. > :57:15.time World Champion. Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa.
:57:16. > :57:22.Collecting gold medals. Still young, still improving. This year, he has
:57:23. > :57:27.run I think that is his third time under 44. Maybe fourth time. I would
:57:28. > :57:29.have to check. But, more work for him to come but for now can enjoy
:57:30. > :59:02.his Gold Medal. So he is the world champion again,
:59:03. > :59:08.he has more work do, he will be back in two hours for the third semifinal
:59:09. > :59:12.for the 200. He won't face Makwala because he has been drawn in lane
:59:13. > :59:15.one of the first heat, which is Mitchell-Blake's heat, that is going
:59:16. > :59:20.to make that one interesting as well. But for the time being van
:59:21. > :59:31.Niekerk can go away and prepare, but it is Mitchell-Blake who will face
:59:32. > :59:37.Makwala. And that is at 8.55 tonight. I have
:59:38. > :59:42.looked and it doesn't appear to be any drier at nine to nine tonight.
:59:43. > :59:46.The rain keeps on coming and the medals keep on coming for South
:59:47. > :59:49.Africa. That is four for them now, their second gold, will there be
:59:50. > :59:55.more for van Niekerk, you would think so, what colour will it be?
:59:56. > :59:59.Be? America US still topping the table with 11 medals in total. A
:00:00. > :00:03.slow start it has been for Great Britain, with all those fourths and
:00:04. > :00:08.near misses, it is still just me of's gold.
:00:09. > :00:17.-- Mo Farah's gold. Plenty to come this evening for you.
:00:18. > :00:21.It is women's long jump qualification and there a twin
:00:22. > :00:27.American threat with Brittney Reese and Bartoletta.
:00:28. > :00:36.Late addition to the GB squad Shara Proctor will want to recreate her
:00:37. > :00:43.World Championship silver. Also Jazmin Sawyers in this event. Mo
:00:44. > :00:49.Farah returns to the track. It is 5000 metre heats time. He is joined
:00:50. > :00:53.in his heat by a fellow Brit who finished sixth in Rio last summer.
:00:54. > :01:01.Wayde van Niekerk and Danny Talbot get reacquainted in the 400 metres
:01:02. > :01:06.semifinals. Kerron Clement is attempting to become the first in
:01:07. > :01:07.history to win three world titles in his event. Alison Phillips is aiming
:01:08. > :01:28.to make it ten world titles. We are kicking off at 7:05pm with
:01:29. > :01:36.that 3000 women's steeplechase. Featuring Britain's Lennie Waite and
:01:37. > :01:38.Rosie Clarke. Shara Proctor, Lorraine to get in and Jazmin
:01:39. > :01:51.Sawyers are the home hopes in the long jump. Mo Farah has been
:01:52. > :01:57.recovering in a cryo sauna since the 10,000 metres final last Friday.
:01:58. > :02:01.Let's hope he is fully rested for tonight's Keyte. Michelle Carter is
:02:02. > :02:15.the headline act in the women's shot put final. The newly qualified
:02:16. > :02:20.Makwala is going to be in heat one of the 200 metres semifinals. Next
:02:21. > :02:27.on track is the men's 400 metres hurdles final. And come patriot
:02:28. > :02:33.Allyson Felix is in the women's 400 metres final to round off the night.
:02:34. > :02:39.Lennie Waite is somewhere out there in the rain, getting ready to start
:02:40. > :02:46.this 3000 metres steeplechase set of heats. I imagine it will be a little
:02:47. > :02:50.bit tricky out there out there -- for them on the barriers. Is there
:02:51. > :03:00.anything they can do? A massive towel! No, nothing you can do. A lot
:03:01. > :03:04.of water is involved anywhere. All of the athletes heard all the
:03:05. > :03:12.barriers, so they are not going to put their foot on it. It's just the
:03:13. > :03:21.water jump where they do. The rest of them they will hope to negotiate.
:03:22. > :03:27.It is just making it miserable and cold for everybody out there, the
:03:28. > :03:30.conditions. The track is a bit wet. Especially the inside lanes. The
:03:31. > :03:37.configuration of the roof here means that the outer part of the track,
:03:38. > :03:41.round the top bend, is dry, but not the area they go through for the
:03:42. > :03:47.steeplechase. They pretty much have a full lap with a wet track. Shara
:03:48. > :03:53.Proctor, over on the far side there. The long jumpers are keeping dry,
:03:54. > :03:58.thankfully. Just. You can see the rain coming under the lip of the
:03:59. > :04:04.shelter. The two parallel runways for the long jump qualifying. Shara
:04:05. > :04:21.Proctor and Jazmin Sawyers warning up there. It is 2.70 metres to
:04:22. > :04:29.qualify. Pretty tough qualifying in this steeplechase. Plenty of names
:04:30. > :04:34.in there. Jepkemoi of Kenya. Krause, medallist last time as well. Lots of
:04:35. > :04:47.names I will talk about when we are getting going. Kirui. It will make
:04:48. > :04:53.it hard for Lennie Waite. Lennie had to get an invite because she didn't
:04:54. > :04:59.make the qualifying time. There are insights given to home country
:05:00. > :05:05.athletes by the IAAF, so she was the recipient of one of those. Rosie
:05:06. > :05:11.Clarke for Great Britain is going in the next heat. The defending
:05:12. > :05:16.champion on the inside, Jepkemoi. She is in great form this year. And
:05:17. > :05:25.Ruth Jebet, the Olympic champion, going in the next one. She has had
:05:26. > :05:30.one or two problems. Just over 7.5 laps of the track. The water jump is
:05:31. > :05:36.on the inside of the track here in the London Stadium. They don't take
:05:37. > :05:42.the water jump first time round, so they will be dry for a short period
:05:43. > :05:49.here. Just coming back to the point, while they are jogging off here. I
:05:50. > :05:56.read overnight that the French athlete put in another protest in
:05:57. > :06:01.the men's steeplechase final, that another athlete had put his feet on
:06:02. > :06:06.the line. The referees said, yes he did, but it was on the straight part
:06:07. > :06:10.of the steeplechase. I cannot believe they are looking at it again
:06:11. > :06:16.to get another medal. It is disgusting to me that he would do
:06:17. > :06:22.that. He completely missed the boat to be able to get a medal. Finished
:06:23. > :06:27.very tidily and very fast, and then he is immediately looking at footage
:06:28. > :06:33.to see if he could get a medal. If we did that every time, you wouldn't
:06:34. > :06:39.feel like you had learnt a bronze medal if you took it away from
:06:40. > :06:44.somebody else. For the second year in a row, they put a protest in.
:06:45. > :06:49.They were successful in the Olympics, but not so this time. The
:06:50. > :06:57.pace is not as quick as you would expect. I've mention Peru me. And
:06:58. > :07:04.Krause, the German, who ran very well two years ago. The European
:07:05. > :07:12.champ in has been building into form this year. She didn't start very
:07:13. > :07:16.well. She is a big exponent of altitude training, and went to
:07:17. > :07:22.Ethiopia for it. She has got herself into good form to get into these
:07:23. > :07:25.championships. She did. She looked good winning the European team
:07:26. > :07:30.championship, but she looked like she moved on a level from that race
:07:31. > :07:41.in Rabatts. So peaking at the right time. Colleen Quigley sitting on her
:07:42. > :07:45.shoulder there. She hasn't seen her compatriot get a medal, so she will
:07:46. > :07:52.be looking to advance from these heats. Trying to drive the track
:07:53. > :08:01.there! Tough qualifying conditions. The first three only to go through
:08:02. > :08:06.in what is a hard heat. The problem with the slow pace is that you
:08:07. > :08:17.cannot cite the barriers very well, particularly in the pack. So it is
:08:18. > :08:22.good to move out. Getent of Bahrain moving out, the former Ethiopian.
:08:23. > :08:27.Assefa absolutely sat in the water almost there, came to a complete and
:08:28. > :08:33.utter stop. One of the most experienced athletes in this, in the
:08:34. > :08:44.green and yellow of Ethiopia. Came to a complete stop in the water
:08:45. > :08:50.jump. Quigley, a very good American. Coached by the same coach who also
:08:51. > :08:59.coached Jager, who won the bronze yesterday. It might be the Moroccan
:09:00. > :09:04.athletes there who has taken the lead, Madane. She has seen her
:09:05. > :09:08.compatriot get a silver medal there. She was one of the athletes who
:09:09. > :09:14.walked out and looked the least happy to compete in these
:09:15. > :09:20.conditions. But she has opened up a gap behind her. They are not that
:09:21. > :09:23.keen to go with her. The others need to take the challenge, because it's
:09:24. > :09:31.better for the likes of Quigley and Krause to move with her. She's not
:09:32. > :09:35.going to completely run away from them. Quigley looking for a bit of
:09:36. > :09:39.room. The Kenyans are not bothered, because they will assume they can
:09:40. > :09:45.move into the top three on the last lap anyway. But there's too many
:09:46. > :09:57.good athletes here. Getent, Krause, Assefa. Madane has at least got this
:09:58. > :10:02.moving a bit. Plenty still in with a chance. The second semifinal.
:10:03. > :10:10.Thereof six fastest loser spots available. Rosie Clarke is in the
:10:11. > :10:15.second heat. After stringing it out, Sidi Madane, she has let the pace
:10:16. > :10:24.dropped now, and has relinquished the lead to Kirui. The pace does
:10:25. > :10:30.need to be pushed a bit. When you are in the first heat, you are at a
:10:31. > :10:33.distinct disadvantage if it goes slow, because in the second heat,
:10:34. > :10:38.they will know what pace they need to go at and will have a better
:10:39. > :10:44.chance of getting into the six fastest losers. In the top for
:10:45. > :10:47.there, you have the Commonwealth champion in two roomy. You have the
:10:48. > :10:52.defending world champion Jepkemoi in there. And you have the defending
:10:53. > :11:05.world champion, Assefa, in there as well. There's plenty of ability
:11:06. > :11:09.there. Assefa is not the quickest in the latter stages, so she might
:11:10. > :11:16.start thinking that she needs to make this a bit of a longer run. It
:11:17. > :11:21.is flowing again, Paula. They are queueing up. Look how wide they are
:11:22. > :11:24.as they are moving out to get a good site on the barriers. Nobody is
:11:25. > :11:31.happy being at the front of this race. More relevant in finals. If
:11:32. > :11:35.you are at the front, you have to do something with it. Sidi Madane is
:11:36. > :11:41.all too late in the pace of it, surging and then letting it drop.
:11:42. > :11:46.Colleen Quigley on her inside looks relaxed. But she will be thinking,
:11:47. > :11:51.there are too many people in this group, and if somebody does not make
:11:52. > :11:58.a move soon, somebody like Assefa or Quigley needs to start pushing the
:11:59. > :12:08.pace on. This is so slow. Plenty of athletes in here who are around 9.40
:12:09. > :12:13.also. They will be looking round thinking, here I am. Lennie Waite
:12:14. > :12:18.still in that group. This is where the sort of accidents can happen.
:12:19. > :12:23.There's too many people just gathered and no pace on. Jepkemoi
:12:24. > :12:34.looking behind and looking where Assefa is. On the inside, Quigley.
:12:35. > :12:41.There is also Getent of Bahrain there. I think Bahrain have got
:12:42. > :12:46.three athletes declared in this. Getent is looking very easy. She has
:12:47. > :12:51.kept as dry as she can in this weather in this race. She has
:12:52. > :13:02.covered any moves and starting to push that gap that has opened up
:13:03. > :13:07.between Lennie Waite and Danois. Assefa looks like she might be
:13:08. > :13:17.moving a bit. Sanchez of Spain in the red and yellow. The French
:13:18. > :13:21.athlete, Danois, still hanging in a bit, but faltered a bit there.
:13:22. > :13:28.Lennie Waite starting to struggle as the pace starts to pick up. 600
:13:29. > :13:32.metres to go. The water jump for the penultimate time. Only three can
:13:33. > :13:38.qualify. Lennie Waite the last through of that group. She will have
:13:39. > :13:43.to finish as quickly as she can, but I suspect there will not be too many
:13:44. > :13:46.fastest losers from this heat. She will need a long, hard run in.
:13:47. > :14:02.Krause moved inside from a good position, but I
:14:03. > :14:05.think it was to sites that barrier. Now she is in a position... Sidi
:14:06. > :14:06.Madane has moved across. Kirui, the Commonwealth champion, now
:14:07. > :14:17.struggling. Not looking very comfortable. The front five starting
:14:18. > :14:21.to pull away. Kirui, the Commonwealth champion, really
:14:22. > :14:26.struggling to hang onto this. Krause getting some room on the inside. Got
:14:27. > :14:36.to the barrier properly. Hurdles it well. Kirui desperately trying to
:14:37. > :14:41.get back into this. Assefa there. Krause looking for some room on the
:14:42. > :14:50.inside. The water for the last time. Krause takes it well. There goes
:14:51. > :14:58.Krause. She's so good at this. The last barriers. Started into it, but
:14:59. > :15:07.took it OK. Krause is going to go through. Jepkemoi and Quigley
:15:08. > :15:13.definitely. The time is 9.39. I think, as Lennie Waite comes in,
:15:14. > :15:17.going to be around 9.52 by the time she gets to the line. I'm not sure
:15:18. > :15:24.that anyone who is not in the top three here cannot even hope... They
:15:25. > :15:31.can hope that the others go as slow as they have. Once you get as low as
:15:32. > :15:36.9.40, the ones in the other race have a chance. What about
:15:37. > :15:45.Krausestrong, out kicked of the defending world champion there.
:15:46. > :15:51.She really had to work to guard her position as well. We will have a
:15:52. > :15:56.look at them coming into the final water jump. Krause takes that one
:15:57. > :16:06.well. Sees the space on the inside but had to fight to hold it. Quigley
:16:07. > :16:17.follows through in the gap Krause opened end and got into third place.
:16:18. > :16:20.Those three are clear there. It's the battle really behind for
:16:21. > :16:26.Gabourey Sidibe. -- Sidi Madane. They know they needed to get into
:16:27. > :16:35.that position. Krause, id it didn't matter, it was the first three that
:16:36. > :16:47.would go through, Jepkemoi, and Krause.
:16:48. > :16:52.And the rain keeps on pouring, but it continue affect the long jumpers.
:16:53. > :17:00.Is a loaded field forethem and Mo Farah, it is the heats of the 5,000
:17:01. > :17:03.metres in 45 minutes time. He is used to these conditions, he will
:17:04. > :17:13.have had plenty of rain in London. This is nothing for Mo.
:17:14. > :17:25.Two long jump run ups are being used this evening, and we are all over
:17:26. > :17:32.this competition. We are on the dry side fortunately. Here comes Shara
:17:33. > :17:35.Proctor. In the long jump qualification. He
:17:36. > :17:44.is looking for support from the crowd. It is damp. Cool. Proctor
:17:45. > :17:48.round one. That is just over six metres. It is
:17:49. > :17:52.greasy, slippy, not great conditions, Tony. It will tough.
:17:53. > :17:56.They are running into a head wind. It is wet, that makes you cold. You
:17:57. > :18:01.are trying to sprint as best as you can, it would be better if you are
:18:02. > :18:06.warm. On a pen ultimate, it needs to be active on the board. A bit too
:18:07. > :18:14.much vertical so went too high. Needs to keep it flatter to
:18:15. > :18:28.penetrate into the pit. 6.07. Shy of what she will need.
:18:29. > :18:40.First round. Klishina. It's a lodger effort. Klishina, the only athlete
:18:41. > :18:47.last year jumping in the Rio Olympics, came ninth.
:18:48. > :18:52.Said she was bullied on instra gram and branded a traitor for competing
:18:53. > :18:56.in a neutral vest as a Russian athlete.
:18:57. > :19:02.In her interview before the World Championships, Klishina is a
:19:03. > :19:09.contender. 7.05 at her very best. 6.51. Best jump so far.
:19:10. > :19:17.Jazmin Sawyers then. Always a bright light, looking up to this as she
:19:18. > :19:21.will need to be, her best this year, 6.55. She will need all of that and
:19:22. > :19:27.some more. To go through to the final on Friday.
:19:28. > :19:32.Good height. Maybe lacked a bit of speed. Probably too much height. It
:19:33. > :19:37.is speed to carry her, every time she goes too high, you go up but you
:19:38. > :19:44.fall, gravity brings you back down. It needs a flatter take off. Her
:19:45. > :19:50.great ability is her ability to recoil, that strength, that tight
:19:51. > :19:54.spring. Board, OK you can get a few more, in these wet conditions, half
:19:55. > :20:00.op half off will give you a bit more grip.
:20:01. > :20:06.So Kelly Sotherton coaching now, 6.17 for Jazmin Sawyers in the first
:20:07. > :20:11.round. Possibly Britain's best chance of a
:20:12. > :20:16.medallist in this long jump is Lorraine Ugen.
:20:17. > :20:24.Her first jump, to try and make that final. Look at that big PB. That is
:20:25. > :20:30.from last year. 6.97 when she gets it right. That is a big effort. The
:20:31. > :20:34.blue line is that auto qualifying and that is close to it. That is
:20:35. > :20:38.very good. That is a very good opener that. Just shortened up the
:20:39. > :20:44.last stride so you quicken and elevate. Much better shin angle,
:20:45. > :20:49.right on top. Just a sink and pull but that is active. Whirls the arms
:20:50. > :20:52.round a bit. Comes in a bit premature, that may be good enough
:20:53. > :21:04.to get through, I would have thought. 6.63. Bartoletta, one of
:21:05. > :21:12.the favourites for the title here. Olympic champion last year. Reigning
:21:13. > :21:19.World Champion in her first attempt. Oh way down on what we thought might
:21:20. > :21:21.happen there but Bartoletta may be struggling in these condition,
:21:22. > :21:25.doubting her foot position on the board maybe. It is is a tough
:21:26. > :21:29.business getting your foot down on the board and not slipping. The
:21:30. > :21:35.difference is she has more speed on the board than anybody else. You can
:21:36. > :21:38.see how quickly the cadence, the way she comes in and quickens. It is
:21:39. > :21:42.difficult out there, you are coming out, it is wet, you are cold. You
:21:43. > :21:50.want to get qualifying done and dusted and back in doors as quickly
:21:51. > :21:56.as possible. That is the idea. Get the qualifying and Lorraine Ugen,
:21:57. > :22:03.good stuff from her. Here is the other American bit anyReese.
:22:04. > :22:06.Champion of 2011 -- Brittney Reese. Expecting a ding-dong battle between
:22:07. > :22:11.the two American, we would love Lorraine Ugen to get involved in
:22:12. > :22:14.that. Brittney Reese getting in pursuit of 6.70 or better and is
:22:15. > :22:21.also shy of it. So they are struggling. It underlines how good
:22:22. > :22:27.that jump was of Lorraine Ugen. A centimetre behind Bartoletta. Reese
:22:28. > :22:33.looks shy of that. Dropped her feet in a built early. Drives the knee, a
:22:34. > :22:37.sink and step there, just drops her feet in bait early. Body gets
:22:38. > :22:42.forwards, from that. They are running into a head wind as well, so
:22:43. > :22:48.they haven't made it easy to get the 6 metres 706789 No qualifiers in the
:22:49. > :22:52.first jumps. The news from the first semifinal is that was result and you
:22:53. > :22:57.will probably notice the name of Quigley has been missed off. He did
:22:58. > :23:02.finish in third place in the qualifying place. She has been
:23:03. > :23:05.disqualified, which is, the infringement is for a lane
:23:06. > :23:09.infringement, so she has stepped off the line, so she has been
:23:10. > :23:14.disqualified. Second one to come now. Under way and as Steven and
:23:15. > :23:18.Paula mentioned, you probably saw how slow that first heat was as
:23:19. > :23:20.well. Immediately it seems to be a bit sharper here. Again the
:23:21. > :23:27.advantage of going in the second heat or the third which is still to
:23:28. > :23:33.come, and Rosie Clarke goes in the third heat. No British involvement
:23:34. > :23:36.here. 9.54 would get you into the fastest of the losers here, because
:23:37. > :23:58.there was no real pace about that first one. But the athletes to look
:23:59. > :24:04.out for the Ken grand. Such a strong runner and alongside Fente. It is
:24:05. > :24:08.easily within the compass of a few to go through if not automatically
:24:09. > :24:12.as fastest losers. They have a distinct advantage. It is crazy
:24:13. > :24:17.because the first heat was the toughest of the heat, you would
:24:18. > :24:23.expect something to give it a go and to at least get the pace moving
:24:24. > :24:33.along within that race. This by contrast has gone out quicker. Jebet
:24:34. > :24:39.moving out to the front. Jebet ahead of Chepkoech two of the favourites
:24:40. > :24:46.are. Beginning to Tring this out at a good pace. Pace: That is fent the
:24:47. > :24:50.Ethopian, you see the dangers of what can happen in the water jump.
:24:51. > :24:55.You can Coll a halt. The slope is angles up. The further you go the
:24:56. > :25:01.shall we are the water but if you get it wrong you can come to a halt.
:25:02. > :25:04.It is not just about your pace over 3,000 metres it is your technique
:25:05. > :25:24.and Fente got it wrong. A brilliant performancer Spanovic.
:25:25. > :25:28.We think about the chances for the British jumpers. Spanovic first
:25:29. > :25:32.attempt. Slightlily dropped back there, in
:25:33. > :25:37.her leg shoot. We put her put a series of jumps in the European
:25:38. > :25:42.indoors that was quite incredible. Maybe hasn't quite transferred that
:25:43. > :25:49.to the outdoors this summer, but Spanovic, one to watch. Shy of that
:25:50. > :25:52.auto qualifying line. Still no-one beyond that 6.70 that would give
:25:53. > :25:56.them the comfort of taking the spikes off. Going back in the dry.
:25:57. > :26:02.Spanovic waiting for her measurement. It is 6.62. A
:26:03. > :26:09.centimetre behind Lorraine Ugen, and Bartoletta. Shara Proctor, I think
:26:10. > :26:14.that is. I think it is. That is our guess. When she turns round we will
:26:15. > :26:19.know. So 6.02 the start. Jazmin Sawyers
:26:20. > :26:25.will need more. The best of British so far is Lorraine Ugen with 6.63.
:26:26. > :26:32.Two jumps remaining. A different heat here in the women's
:26:33. > :26:44.steeplechase. The pace is really being set hard by Jebet and chip
:26:45. > :26:51.coke. -- chip coke. Very close to sub nine minutes. They are, they are
:26:52. > :26:57.doing it safely a stutter from Jebet. She has a side on technique a
:26:58. > :27:03.few athletes favour. They are having a bit of race here, Paula. They are.
:27:04. > :27:07.There is not really any need to do this. They went through in 3.02.
:27:08. > :27:13.That is quicker than the first heat went. So as quick as they needed to
:27:14. > :27:19.go. They only enjoyed to be in the first three, these two can relax,
:27:20. > :27:27.keep that buffer and the real race is happening behind. The others need
:27:28. > :27:43.to keep going because they are clearfully the qualifying positions
:27:44. > :27:47.and will knock out the first six. She knows they raced well, these two
:27:48. > :27:53.now may be can work together to try and make sure that if one goes
:27:54. > :27:58.through, as the third automatic qualifier, the other has a good
:27:59. > :28:03.chance of being the fastest loser. It is still Jebet and Chepkoech out
:28:04. > :28:07.in front. They have separated themselves in third and fourth,
:28:08. > :28:15.behind these two now, so we have the American and you have the Jamaican
:28:16. > :28:20.brought. Jebet and Chepkoech, they only don't need to worry about them.
:28:21. > :28:25.They are racing among themselves, they don't need to waste any energy
:28:26. > :28:29.here, ahead of the final on Friday. They are well aware of how clear
:28:30. > :28:33.they are. They are not opening the gap any further, but it's a good
:28:34. > :28:37.race behind them. They are not opening the gap any further. They
:28:38. > :28:44.have decided to look at the screen and take the foot off the gas a bit.
:28:45. > :28:54.Now they have built up that cushion, the only danger comes from the not
:28:55. > :29:03.too great hurdling technique. There is a battle further back. Trying to
:29:04. > :29:08.get back, leading the group of four, trying to get back to the two in
:29:09. > :29:20.third and fourth. They are the ones we want to look at. The American.
:29:21. > :29:25.Also brought from Jamaica who has dope a lot of her racing in the US
:29:26. > :29:31.college circuit. They will qualify. It is this group here, I say group,
:29:32. > :29:37.a group of two if you can have such a thing. The group behind them, is
:29:38. > :29:42.about 10, 15 metres and they are not losing contact. It is only three to
:29:43. > :29:47.go through automatically. It's a good tussle behind the two out in
:29:48. > :29:52.front. It is like two battles going on with two in front. They are going
:29:53. > :30:05.to go through and qualify. The battle behind that is between
:30:06. > :30:12.brought. It is significant but it is not impossible to close down in the
:30:13. > :30:16.next two laps. A good race led by Fente. They are trying to get back
:30:17. > :30:20.to those two in third and fourth but chase a time. This heat is much
:30:21. > :30:24.quicker, at least from the top two, than the first heat was, and again,
:30:25. > :30:32.a very sluggish first heat with the last of the fastest losers at the
:30:33. > :30:33.moment, down 9.54. Three heats in total and Rosie Clarke goes in the
:30:34. > :30:46.next. Jebet has a very ungainly stand. It
:30:47. > :30:59.makes you wince as she comes down. If you contrast the style of Jebet
:31:00. > :31:07.with others, it is evident they work on the barriers. Jebet represents
:31:08. > :31:15.Bahrain, but she still trains in her native Kenya. Trains with Chespol,
:31:16. > :31:23.who comes in the next heat. Three go through automatically. Frerichs, the
:31:24. > :31:31.American, tries to lift the place. That Praught is still just behind
:31:32. > :31:36.her, the Jamaican. At the moment, Aisha Praught is going to be clear,
:31:37. > :31:42.but probably the next behind her are likely to go through as well. The
:31:43. > :31:50.danger is the people coming out in the third heat. It is easy for these
:31:51. > :31:55.two at the moment. The first two, Chepkoech and Jebet. And behind,
:31:56. > :32:00.Courtney Frerichs of the United States, second in the US trials. A
:32:01. > :32:08.gap opening out between her and Aisha Praught of Jamaica. The two
:32:09. > :32:15.leaders, out in front, along way clear. Frerichs in the water for the
:32:16. > :32:19.last time, and does it well. Aisha Praught with the chase now to try to
:32:20. > :32:25.get that last automatic qualifying place. Out in front, Chepkoech and
:32:26. > :32:34.Ruth Jebet, the Olympic champion. Chepkoech with a great record in
:32:35. > :32:40.this event. As does Kenya. The time is much, much quicker than the first
:32:41. > :32:46.heat. Frerichs over the line. Praught in about 9.25, which is a
:32:47. > :32:53.good deal faster than the fastest leaders from the first heat. Fente,
:32:54. > :32:59.and Kaya coming through. They are all fast. Perhaps even the Danish
:33:00. > :33:06.athlete coming through there. It is going to be tight. But Jebet, the
:33:07. > :33:12.Olympic champion, is off to have a chat with a few people. Chepkoech
:33:13. > :33:20.has done her job as well. They are safely through, as is Courtney
:33:21. > :33:25.Frerichs. With unrelenting rain, Shara Proctor
:33:26. > :33:33.takes to the runway for her second attempt to try and reach the
:33:34. > :33:37.qualifying mark of 6.70. Needs to find more. A better height. Slightly
:33:38. > :33:55.better distance, maybe. Proctor is behind. It is terrible
:33:56. > :34:00.conditions. Unlike Clichy will need the 6.70 that is automatic
:34:01. > :34:06.qualifying. Somewhere in the 6.20s. She's going to need more than that.
:34:07. > :34:12.Thinking on the penultimate and going out too high. Not going across
:34:13. > :34:18.the board horizontally. There is an optimum angle. There is a vertical
:34:19. > :34:26.element, and a horizontal. Look at that. 13th place. Only 12 make the
:34:27. > :34:31.final. Lorraine Ugen, looked really good in the first round. The second
:34:32. > :34:39.best jumper of this qualifying process so far. Behind Bartoletta.
:34:40. > :34:46.She knew she had gone over on the plasticine. She looks good. Running
:34:47. > :34:54.hard, running a bit rocky. Just over a extended there. 6.63. Second
:34:55. > :35:03.place. That might be good enough to get through. Almost certainly, given
:35:04. > :35:08.the conditions, but a foul for Lorraine Ugen. One more chance for
:35:09. > :35:12.automatic qualifying. You can see the pitch just on the edge of the
:35:13. > :35:20.shelter. Going well for Lorraine Ugen. Shara Proctor and Jazmin
:35:21. > :35:34.Sawyers the wrong side of the cut. Only 12 athletes to go through.
:35:35. > :35:47.Fifth place is likely to be enough to. It is tough there.? Is
:35:48. > :36:01.underfoot. Just to retain contact with the ground. And that is better.
:36:02. > :36:07.There is the white flag there. Just backs of the board there, Klishina.
:36:08. > :36:14.Just citing the board and running a little bit. She had the room,
:36:15. > :36:18.really. Got to run at the board and accelerate. But a lot tend to
:36:19. > :36:25.decelerate towards the end, but that is where you want to have a quick
:36:26. > :36:29.one, two rhythm of the board. Tough when it's raining. It puts an
:36:30. > :36:36.element of doubt in your mind. It is the best we've seen so far. 6.66 for
:36:37. > :36:45.Klishina. But still shy of automatic. A higher qualifying
:36:46. > :36:50.standard here. Maybe the conditions playing a part, in the fact that no
:36:51. > :36:54.athlete has gone beyond automatic qualifying. So Jazmin Sawyers. We
:36:55. > :37:00.have seen her raise her game when she needs to in the past on so many
:37:01. > :37:08.occasions. She is going to have to find half a metre here to improve
:37:09. > :37:19.her round one distance. Decelerated and jammed her foot in there. Hips
:37:20. > :37:27.back at the board, and slammed her foot in. That decelerated her at the
:37:28. > :37:35.board. You need 6.35 to be in the top 12 as it stands at a moment.
:37:36. > :37:44.Running in. It just blocks. You have to have a backward movement
:37:45. > :37:48.underneath you to carry the speed. Another field event under way. Nick
:37:49. > :37:54.Miller in the hammer. Another event that is going to be compromised in
:37:55. > :38:03.these conditions. Down the left sector for Miller there. A good
:38:04. > :38:09.start. Really good start. Bang on that auto qualifying line. Just in
:38:10. > :38:15.the centre. Just held on to this. Trying to make sure with his feet,
:38:16. > :38:23.maybe. In the conditions, that is a really good throw for Nick Miller.
:38:24. > :38:29.24 years of age. The British record-holder. 75.52, auto
:38:30. > :38:36.qualifying. A brilliant start for Nick Miller. Kept his arms really
:38:37. > :38:41.long on the turns. You just have to let the hammerhead go. The hammer
:38:42. > :38:44.releasing at around 60 miles an hour. He qualified so well at the
:38:45. > :38:52.World Championships last time around. That is job done. Job done
:38:53. > :39:01.indeed for Nick Miller. Books his place for Friday's final. Another
:39:02. > :39:06.chance of a medal. We haven't managed to convert on so many
:39:07. > :39:10.occasions. Just that one gold medal for Mo Farah, of course. Can Nick
:39:11. > :39:15.Miller do what Sophie Hitchon did last year? His lifetime best is
:39:16. > :39:22.going to be the kind of distance he needs. That is possibly one of his
:39:23. > :39:28.best throws ever, for me. Possibly. The only concern is that it was down
:39:29. > :39:37.the left-hand side. But in these wet conditions, job done. In you go. We
:39:38. > :39:47.are now lining up for the third heat of the 3000 metres women's
:39:48. > :39:53.steeplechase. All of those from Fente to Kaya are in qualifying
:39:54. > :40:03.positions. Much faster than the first heat. Rosie Clarke. Not the
:40:04. > :40:08.preparation she would have liked. She is new to the steeplechase.
:40:09. > :40:15.Started last year. A good 1500 metre runner. Ran her personal best. Then
:40:16. > :40:24.injury since then has affected her preparations. She is fit and healthy
:40:25. > :40:32.now, but a tough qualification for her. Top three, or six fastest
:40:33. > :40:35.losers. She's got Emma Coburn, the Olympic bronze medallist, against
:40:36. > :40:51.her. Fabian Schar lamp from Switzerland. Rosie got a great
:40:52. > :40:57.introduction. She's got some very good African runners, including this
:40:58. > :41:03.18-year-old, Chespol. A new African record-holder as a junior and as a
:41:04. > :41:08.senior. Phenomenal running earlier in the year. She won the Kenyan
:41:09. > :41:13.trial as well. Emma Coburn as well. Another couple of very good
:41:14. > :41:23.youngsters. Yavi, a Kenyan who now runs for Bahrain. We have Chemutai
:41:24. > :41:31.of Uganda, 18 years old. Where ever you let, some bright talents in this
:41:32. > :41:38.event. And Rosie Clarke. She picked up an injury back in May after the
:41:39. > :41:54.run in Stamford. Had a curtailed preparation. But she has a chance
:41:55. > :41:58.now and has to run. She were to finish fourth or fifth in this heat,
:41:59. > :42:04.that would be an incredible achievement. To get to the final is
:42:05. > :42:09.a tall order. It is. She missed a little bit of training, but then she
:42:10. > :42:14.was back out with the group in France, and it was good training. I
:42:15. > :42:18.saw some very good sessions from her that indicated she could go close to
:42:19. > :42:23.her personal best. She's going to have to do that, and keep moving if
:42:24. > :42:33.people don't keep the pace moving well. Something around 3.10 would be
:42:34. > :42:39.helpful. 3.10 would give you nine point 30, which is a little bit
:42:40. > :42:45.quicker than rosy's personal-best. She just needs to keep improving,
:42:46. > :42:53.getting quicker. She is a very good runner. If she gets to grips with
:42:54. > :42:59.the... O! She has fallen! I'm not quite sure what happened there.
:43:00. > :43:06.Don't panic. Don't panic. She will have got a bit of a shock there. She
:43:07. > :43:14.just needs to settle. Let's have another look. Let's see them coming
:43:15. > :43:21.into the barriers. I think LaCaze just came across a bit. Did she
:43:22. > :43:26.slipped? She lost all the Menton and went down onto her knees almost
:43:27. > :43:32.there. I wonder if she hurt her ankle as she landed on it. As she
:43:33. > :43:38.landed, you could see the pain on her face. She needs to not panic
:43:39. > :43:44.now. She is running well, so it is clearly not too serious. She just
:43:45. > :43:47.needs to get back in control of herself, stay in touch, and just to
:43:48. > :43:53.try to get that surge of adrenaline she will have got as she stumbled
:43:54. > :43:59.under control. She takes the barriers well, but she has been
:44:00. > :44:04.stuttering into them a bit. Once a better site of them. Her pace is
:44:05. > :44:10.pretty good. It's not really quick, but it is enough, if you like. A lot
:44:11. > :44:15.of the youngsters in there. Still coming to a stop there. She has got
:44:16. > :44:21.to stretch out off that barrier and pushed through. It is the energy you
:44:22. > :44:28.waste. It is OK recovering in these early laps, but you will pay for it
:44:29. > :44:36.in later laps. Chemutai and Yavi ahead of her. Yavi, the 17-year-old.
:44:37. > :44:42.I saw her pacemaking in Oslo and she actually missed the water jump. I
:44:43. > :44:47.think Assefa took her out. Rosie Clarke trying to hang on as the pace
:44:48. > :44:56.picks up. Still in this at the moment. America's Brittney Reese,
:44:57. > :45:03.champion in this stadium five years ago, lost out to Olympic gold last
:45:04. > :45:08.year to her team-mate by just two centimetres. A very tentative start
:45:09. > :45:14.to her world title campaign in the first round. Just shortened their
:45:15. > :45:20.slightly maybe. That looks like no improvement.
:45:21. > :45:27.She is putting the brakes on. Almost perfect, board, maybe she thought
:45:28. > :45:33.she was going to bow. Crowded herself a bit on the line and lost
:45:34. > :45:39.her leverage, take off. Tends to be slightly on top of herself when she
:45:40. > :45:47.jumps. 6.46. No improvement. Still in sixth place.
:45:48. > :45:52.Our new leader in this third heat is Emma Coburn. She is a bit of a hero
:45:53. > :45:56.of American distance running Emma Coburn, a bit of a poster girl for
:45:57. > :46:02.everything they have been doing over the last year, the medals they have
:46:03. > :46:08.been winning. Jager won a medal in the men's vent. She knows what that
:46:09. > :46:18.feels like. He will hope she can do better. The young African athlete,
:46:19. > :46:23.Yavi just 17. Chespol, only 18, run under nine minutes. Lacaze is
:46:24. > :46:27.committed. Rosie Clarke is still in. She is moving better now. Taking the
:46:28. > :46:33.barriers better. She is passing athletes. The pace was good enough.
:46:34. > :46:36.It is on her personal best, she would have to finish strongly, but
:46:37. > :46:42.she is running well. That will give her confidence as she is catching
:46:43. > :46:46.people. Taking the water jump better: I watched to see how she
:46:47. > :46:51.took that. The barriers on the flat. She has been hurdling them well. She
:46:52. > :46:55.is a good hurdler, but when he hit that water jump so badly, the NEC
:46:56. > :47:00.couple of times she stuttered going into it and looked uncomfortable
:47:01. > :47:04.landing. She looked better on that one, you can see the look of
:47:05. > :47:08.determination on her face, she knows she needs to move up and get more in
:47:09. > :47:17.contact with the group in front and pick off every one of those she can.
:47:18. > :47:22.I reckon if she could get in the top six finishers, maybe second or third
:47:23. > :47:27.fastest and run about 8.56 you would go through, but she will have to
:47:28. > :47:33.pick it up. The pace is going well now. Emma Coburn just slotting on to
:47:34. > :47:36.the back. Lacaze is in a great position, which is a long way back,
:47:37. > :47:43.Rosie Clarke, that effort she made in the mid 8, you can see they have
:47:44. > :47:49.picked up, the 3.9 kilometre and Rosie is struggling. She seems, she
:47:50. > :47:54.really fell, because I thought she had been back on the shoulder. She
:47:55. > :47:59.just didn't see that, that is a real shame. She had got back and now she
:48:00. > :48:04.needs to really really fight hard, but it is a tough, tough ask of her
:48:05. > :48:08.from here. I think that might be her World Championships over unless she
:48:09. > :48:13.can really find something big, now, over just two laps. Apologise to
:48:14. > :48:18.Rosie, I didn't see that down the back straight. Behind the hammer net
:48:19. > :48:22.as we look across. The pictures were on the leaders and it happened out
:48:23. > :48:26.our vision, that is why she had fallen away, you cannot pick up from
:48:27. > :48:30.that. It was, she was moving so well at that time. And certainly was in
:48:31. > :48:34.with an opportunity, as I said I was scanning to see what she needed to
:48:35. > :48:39.do. Sadly that opportunity seems to have gone. So Lacaze in the fourth
:48:40. > :48:44.qualifier or still in with a chance of coming in the top three here. The
:48:45. > :48:48.one who has dropped off is Diro, the young Ethopian who was fifth in the
:48:49. > :48:54.London Olympics is starting to go well. Chespol and Yavi, the two
:48:55. > :48:56.teenagers with that terrible technique but which is standing her
:48:57. > :49:13.in reasonable stead. Emma Coburn looks in control of this
:49:14. > :49:18.one, although she is struggling to stay with that gap. She doesn't
:49:19. > :49:23.enjoyed, she looks at the screen. We see Rosie Clarke looking down at the
:49:24. > :49:30.track. It is a substantial distance she has 20 make up. You can see her
:49:31. > :49:34.in the background entering into the home straight, and Chemutai is
:49:35. > :49:38.fading badly. She could have got Health Service up into conten tiong
:49:39. > :49:42.it is a shame. Most are chasing fastest loser spots but there is
:49:43. > :49:47.four at the front. I think they are going to go through. Probably Diro,
:49:48. > :49:51.so Lacaze probably doesn't need to worry. She is looking at the clock.
:49:52. > :49:56.I don't know how aware she is of whether she needs to sprint and
:49:57. > :50:06.chase them. These the three contenders. Chespol. Yavi, Coburn.
:50:07. > :50:13.The American, but Lacaze has run very well here indeed. She recently
:50:14. > :50:17.celebrated, think this week it was her birthday, turned 28 and running
:50:18. > :50:23.a big race here, so these four look safe. Three of them will qualify by
:50:24. > :50:29.rights. Lacaze will be pretty sure guaranteed a spot. She will be,
:50:30. > :50:39.looking at the clock. She is going to try and outsprintawayy. Do they
:50:40. > :50:44.take it safely? Yes. Chespol. Cow burn and Lacaze, the clock stopped
:50:45. > :50:53.about 9.27. Yavi will go through, Diro will and behind them, it's a
:50:54. > :50:57.scrap on, we will teaty that up. That is sad for Rosie Clarke,
:50:58. > :51:03.without that fall, she wouldn't have been too far away. She, two
:51:04. > :51:06.incidents for Rosie, the first time round in the water jump where she
:51:07. > :51:12.pretty much stopped herself landing on two feet and a really bad clatter
:51:13. > :51:19.into the hurdle on the back straight behind the hammer net. Put paid to
:51:20. > :51:22.any chance she had. I think we are go, we will accept there will be
:51:23. > :51:29.more opportunities for Rosie Clarke, she is just learning the event, and
:51:30. > :51:33.well, for her chances, they disappeared there, so sad, all the
:51:34. > :51:36.hard work she has put in, to get there, Paula. It is going to be
:51:37. > :51:41.tough, we will come back to in in a second. Long jump first. Yes, Great
:51:42. > :51:48.Britain's Shara Proctor is on the runway for the third time. She knows
:51:49. > :51:57.exactly what she needs to qualify. At the moment, 6.43 is in 12th
:51:58. > :52:01.place. You can see she is in... So this the final chance to get
:52:02. > :52:06.involved. A final on Friday. Than is very
:52:07. > :52:11.high. It is better. This is going to be close. This is a nervous wait at
:52:12. > :52:16.this point. You want to see, it gets a white flag. That is the critical
:52:17. > :52:22.thing. So better speed. Better commitment.
:52:23. > :52:27.Reaching there, she was way more committed in this jump Had that knee
:52:28. > :52:31.injury at the British champs. It is like a car accident that resulted in
:52:32. > :52:37.damage to her knee, and hasn't competed since. It is 6.45 for Shara
:52:38. > :52:42.Proctor. A nervous wait for her. Because she is in 12th place, that
:52:43. > :52:47.may still not be enough, because there is lots of jumpers who can go
:52:48. > :52:54.beyond that. At the moment she is in, but it is not guaranteed. It a
:52:55. > :52:59.nervous wait. There are 15 people after you. Some are ahead, you have
:53:00. > :53:08.that wait and Jazmin Sawyers as well, so can a Brit not knock a Brit
:53:09. > :53:12.out? We saw Nick Miller qualify in his
:53:13. > :53:26.first throw. Something this man couldn't do.
:53:27. > :53:43.She fallible. Didn't qat -- qualify. This looked better for Fajdek. He is
:53:44. > :53:49.such a resounding favourite. But has shown that he can get it wrong. 12
:53:50. > :53:52.consecutive wins last year and then a loss and no qualification in the
:53:53. > :54:01.Olympics. Doesn't like qualifying, I don't think. He will be happy with
:54:02. > :54:08.that. Lead qualifier. They don't even have to collect
:54:09. > :54:12.their own hammers. Look at that. When it gets back there there will
:54:13. > :54:16.be somewhere with a towel that cleans it, hangs it back up. You
:54:17. > :54:21.don't get them in training though. No. I will let the athletes fetch
:54:22. > :54:27.their own. Did you fetch your own javelin
:54:28. > :54:35.Steve? More of that in a second. Lorraine Ugen. She is taking her
:54:36. > :54:38.third attempt here, surprisingly, I have to say because she is the third
:54:39. > :54:42.best qualifier overall, maybe just wanted to check this run out. This
:54:43. > :54:47.is fast on the approach. That is is a big jump. I think it's a foul
:54:48. > :54:53.though. That was really committed. She looks good. I am optimistic
:54:54. > :54:56.about her. The difficulty is when she runs faster her stride lengthens
:54:57. > :55:01.and that will creep you into the board. Yes she committed but you can
:55:02. > :55:06.see that lengthening and slight deceleration into the board, but,
:55:07. > :55:13.fingers crossed 6.63 will be good enough. It is likely, well it is
:55:14. > :55:20.almost assured to be good enough. Third best qualifier so far.
:55:21. > :55:26.Lorraine Ugen looking really good. The rain has really been persistent
:55:27. > :55:33.here this afternoon. Jazmin Sawyers, taking shelter, ahead of her third
:55:34. > :55:36.attempt. Terrible condition, but something
:55:37. > :55:42.for the athletes to try and make the best of. While we are waiting for
:55:43. > :55:48.Jazmin Sawyers, this was Rosie Clarke, this was early on. Just came
:55:49. > :55:56.to a bit of a stop then, a bit of a stumble, landed with two feet. And
:55:57. > :56:02.then, a worse fall, much worse fall later, so she finished 9.69 this
:56:03. > :56:06.ninth plate. Three fastest losers from that heat. Sadly Schlumpf of
:56:07. > :56:32.Switzerland just missing out. Another foul. Look at the rain
:56:33. > :56:40.running off the flag there, that was a solid jump from Klishina. He is
:56:41. > :56:46.looking in good shape. And the main protagonist Reese, Bartoletta, two
:56:47. > :56:50.previous World Champions, Klishina, way beyond the board there for
:56:51. > :57:00.Klishina. She is the lead, that 6.66 on the
:57:01. > :57:05.second round is the best. So we have got another medal ceremony and big
:57:06. > :57:19.smile from the American sap Kendricks in what was a thrilling
:57:20. > :57:25.final yesterday evening. So Kendricks stands on top of the
:57:26. > :57:28.world, ahead of the Pole. Surprise silver. Another World Championships
:57:29. > :57:43.has eluded hip. Bubka. He competed flawlessly last night.
:57:44. > :58:03.And now he has his National Anthem to enjoy that gold medal.
:58:04. > :59:12.The third time we have heard the American National Anthem. It was
:59:13. > :59:25.Gatlin in the sprint and Kendricks now, another gold for the USA, the
:59:26. > :59:31.world record holder. Great performance there, but the man of
:59:32. > :59:34.the moment, is Sam Kendricks, he has been brilliant all summer and
:59:35. > :59:38.managed to convert it here at the World Championships.
:59:39. > :59:44.And as expected take that gold medal.
:59:45. > :59:53.Watching on from the studio seeing his fellow Frenchman pick up the
:59:54. > :59:58.bronze there, is Pierre Bosse who is the proud owner of a World
:59:59. > :00:00.Championship medal. Congratulations. It doesn't fit me well. Sorry about
:00:01. > :00:07.that. slightly maybe. That looks like no
:00:08. > :00:17.improvement. The great thing about goals is that
:00:18. > :00:22.it goes with anything. It looks better on you! It was an amazing
:00:23. > :00:27.race, and for you to come from the fourth in Rio last year, and then
:00:28. > :00:31.find yourself at the top of the podium... What has happened in the
:00:32. > :00:37.last year? Many things. Nobody knows, but I had a very bad car
:00:38. > :00:42.accident in October, so it was a very long trip to come back, after
:00:43. > :00:45.all of the trouble that came back after that. I changed also my coach.
:00:46. > :01:04.I've been in Australia two months, I've been everywhere, and I've
:01:05. > :01:07.discovered many things. This is my face you see now. My hair is moving!
:01:08. > :01:10.Never mind your hair! What about your race tactics? They came off,
:01:11. > :01:13.didn't they? At this point, I knew, somehow, that I was going to win. A
:01:14. > :01:20.feeling came over everything. I was dreaming at this point. What were
:01:21. > :01:24.you dreaming? It was a good dreams. I was saying, you know this
:01:25. > :01:30.nightmare where somebody is chasing you that never catches you? You know
:01:31. > :01:35.about this nightmare. Everybody has it. Somebody is behind but never
:01:36. > :01:40.catches you, and you wake up and you are sweating because he never catch
:01:41. > :01:46.you. You are running and sweating, but it never happened. You were
:01:47. > :01:52.having an anxiety dream as you were running? Yes! But when it was over,
:01:53. > :01:58.I couldn't believe it. I'm learning a lot about 800 metre runners. Kyle
:01:59. > :02:03.Langford was with us a few minutes ago, who came fourth. I love that
:02:04. > :02:11.guy. He was describing what went through his head. For the two laps
:02:12. > :02:16.of that race, you do think of a lot! I have known that guy for a long
:02:17. > :02:23.time. I think we have the same age. He used to train in Paris a couple
:02:24. > :02:30.of weeks ago. So I crossed him there in Paris where I train. We are
:02:31. > :02:35.friends of the track, but we are enemies on the track. This guy, it
:02:36. > :02:43.is like the power of the crowd. The crowd love this guy, Mo Farah. Of
:02:44. > :02:49.course. But Kyle Langford is better! Kyle Langford wants to be the new Mo
:02:50. > :02:59.Farah. I think so, of 800. But he needs to beat me before that. That's
:03:00. > :03:05.true. But he will. Pretty soon. He's a talented guy. The way he overtook
:03:06. > :03:10.everybody on the last line. He deserved a medal, actually. .
:03:11. > :03:14.Incredible. And hopefully you will experience that home crowd when the
:03:15. > :03:20.Olympics come to Paris. Tell me about your friend who travelled for
:03:21. > :03:28.13 hours to come to watch you. My friend? It actually wasn't my best
:03:29. > :03:31.friend. He missed a date, a really bad date, so he called me before the
:03:32. > :03:42.final, the night before, about midnight. He had a beer in his hand,
:03:43. > :03:48.and he said, you need to get out here, man. You need to relax. You
:03:49. > :03:54.need to party with me, I said. He said, no. Yes. And that was it. He
:03:55. > :04:00.just came. He was on the train for hours later. A great friend. He will
:04:01. > :04:06.probably want to follow you around the world now. You are world
:04:07. > :04:14.champion. Enjoy it! I do, but I can't. Nobody told me how! Michael,
:04:15. > :04:24.tell me how to do it! Michael Jonsson is in homework corner. it
:04:25. > :04:31.fits you. You wear it well. I think it is sinking in. He is a great guy.
:04:32. > :04:39.You should hang around here more often. We are enjoying having you.
:04:40. > :04:45.Thanks. I appreciate it. You were next door on Japanese TV a moment
:04:46. > :04:50.ago, but I'm glad you came in. To speak English is always good to try,
:04:51. > :04:56.for French men. You are doing very well. Thanks to my girlfriend in
:04:57. > :05:02.Australia right there. Because of her, I speak English. Glad she got a
:05:03. > :05:11.mention! Lets get back on the track for the 5000 metre heats. Mo time!
:05:12. > :05:18.Steve Cram. From one boss to another... I told
:05:19. > :05:26.you that he was a character, Bosse. Mo Farah has one gold medal, like
:05:27. > :05:30.him. We have to heats of the men's 5000 metres. The first five and the
:05:31. > :05:41.five fastest will go through to the final. I think this heat is a bit
:05:42. > :05:48.tougher. The other Brit is probably pleased that Mo is in this one. Mo
:05:49. > :05:53.never worries about his heats. I saw him yesterday. Looked very relaxed.
:05:54. > :06:00.Said he had recovered and was looking forward to it. He has plenty
:06:01. > :06:06.of good opposition here, including Rop, the former Kenyan running for
:06:07. > :06:18.Bahrain. The world indoor champion as well. I saw him run a very good
:06:19. > :06:24.1500 metres. Here is Mo's training partner, Bashir Abdi. Wherever Mo
:06:25. > :06:32.goes, he goes. Except in the races. Not quick enough. To Lang on the
:06:33. > :06:39.inside. One or two to watch out for. Kiplangat. Address very good, the
:06:40. > :06:47.Ethiopian. Some very good Ethiopians. We have Jacob Kiplimo of
:06:48. > :07:04.Uganda as well. People have been getting
:07:05. > :07:10.disqualified all over the place for standing on the line. One or two
:07:11. > :07:17.tonight as well. A lot of young talent here. A bit of a Changing of
:07:18. > :07:21.the Guard of 5000 metres. I don't think it will happen quickly enough
:07:22. > :07:26.to challenge Mo Farah, but we might see a couple of the youngsters in
:07:27. > :07:32.this race coming on and developing. For the time being, Mo Farah is
:07:33. > :07:40.still the man to beat. He won't mind these very British conditions. Chile
:07:41. > :07:46.and wet. There are 12 men in this heat to have run under 13.15 this
:07:47. > :07:52.year. If they wanted to, they could make this a tough heat. Tire them
:07:53. > :07:57.out a little bit more, because he's run the 10,000 metres. There is
:07:58. > :08:05.another race to come, so why hang around. A bit of rain is not bad for
:08:06. > :08:10.distance running. No surprise perhaps that Kifle has gone out
:08:11. > :08:16.hard. These are great conditions for distance running. A cool, rainy
:08:17. > :08:20.evening for the new and Essex Beagle. Mo Farah doing what he's
:08:21. > :08:29.done many times in this part of London, running round the streets
:08:30. > :08:34.round here. We are looking forward to him going through the motions
:08:35. > :08:40.tonight, and then emerging in the top five, or one of the fastest
:08:41. > :08:49.losers. This is a hard event to run, because every single lap of this
:08:50. > :08:54.track tires you out, and all you get for it is the chance to run another
:08:55. > :08:59.12.5 times around the tracks for the final. You have to keep your
:09:00. > :09:05.concentration, because sometimes you think it is easy, but it isn't.
:09:06. > :09:11.Kifle got them moving, and he has stepped aside. You wouldn't expect
:09:12. > :09:17.to Lang to be able to push them on, but Kifle ran in the 10,000 metres.
:09:18. > :09:25.He's decided to keep them going. The long jump qualifying is still going
:09:26. > :09:32.on. Jazmin Sawyers knows she has a chance here. She will need a jump
:09:33. > :09:39.further than the 6.45. The coach watching on. A purposeful look on
:09:40. > :09:50.the face of Jazmin Sawyers. The last jump of qualifying. No. That's not
:09:51. > :09:55.going to be enough. No, unfortunately. Again, gets very high
:09:56. > :10:01.and drops. Hasn't worked out well this year. Last year, Jazmin Sawyers
:10:02. > :10:07.worked with a different coach. Changed coach this year. Going up
:10:08. > :10:12.too high and not carrying the speed across the board. Second in the
:10:13. > :10:22.Commonwealth Games, eighth in the Olympics last year. She is a major
:10:23. > :10:27.champs competitor. 6.34, not enough. 18th place. Her world champs is
:10:28. > :10:34.over. The race is on here in the 5000
:10:35. > :10:43.metre heats. Mo Farah having to keep moving. The crowd is responding to
:10:44. > :10:54.it. Kejelcha, a very good Ethiopians. The pace has moved on.
:10:55. > :11:00.Kifle picked it up. Fifa got things moving again. Kiplimo, the
:11:01. > :11:06.cross-country champion, also. It was not that quick the first few hundred
:11:07. > :11:12.metres. It was 600 before they got moving. They have moved it on a bit
:11:13. > :11:15.now. That is the right thing to do. They are giving themselves extra
:11:16. > :11:22.chances, because there are some very good athlete in this field. The
:11:23. > :11:29.world Junior cross country champion, Kiplimo. He's only 16, half the age
:11:30. > :11:35.of Mo Farah. We will see a lot of him in the future. Kifle from
:11:36. > :11:41.Eritrea. They are making it a little bit hard for Mo. He knows what he
:11:42. > :11:47.has to do. To Ethiopians ahead of him are talented athletes as well.
:11:48. > :11:53.He's got to be on his game and apply himself. He's not got to resent the
:11:54. > :12:02.fact that he's got to run 12.5 laps of the track to get into the final.
:12:03. > :12:07.You've got to do it. Never too much to worry about for Mo, if he keeps
:12:08. > :12:12.on his feet. He will keep an eye on where the qualifying positions are.
:12:13. > :12:24.He will keep an eye on the ones he has to worry about. Ibrahimov just
:12:25. > :12:31.behind him, who in years gone by, almost outkicked Mo Farah, but not
:12:32. > :12:39.any more. Ibrahimov, sounds like a football name! Eric Jenkins is
:12:40. > :12:47.having a good season, the American in the all blue in about six place.
:12:48. > :12:54.Kip gel car will stop I saw him run a 1500 metres before. It was against
:12:55. > :13:04.a very fast guy, and he almost out kicked him. Why do we not see that
:13:05. > :13:13.in the 5000 metres from kip gel car? He has the pace. Mo never seems to
:13:14. > :13:22.worry about him. On paper, you wonder if he could give Mo Farah
:13:23. > :13:27.some problems. His 1500 metre pace is getting closer to Mo Farah's, but
:13:28. > :13:35.I don't see him as anything to worry about. He is proving he can win
:13:36. > :13:41.races, and tonight, he is latching on to Mo Farah and will just follow
:13:42. > :13:49.him. You can see the Eritrean deciding to push it along. And Mo
:13:50. > :13:57.Farah. Being tracked by those useful... More than useful,
:13:58. > :14:03.actually! Two Ethiopians are extremely good runners. Mo Farah
:14:04. > :14:07.doing what he needs to do. He loves the stadium. On a wet night in
:14:08. > :14:16.Newham, he has been here many times before. Watching in the studio is
:14:17. > :14:22.Paula. This is playing once more into Mo's hands. They have slowed
:14:23. > :14:27.down. It's definitely is. He's doing absolutely what he needs to do and
:14:28. > :14:33.nothing more than that. You can hear a roar. Is that for him? He is
:14:34. > :14:44.controlling them, and not doing anything at all to test him. You
:14:45. > :14:49.probably wouldn't expect them to. Good news for Andy Butchart. He will
:14:50. > :14:55.be keeping an eye on this in the tunnel. They have slowed again.
:14:56. > :15:00.Kiplimo, the youngster. There are three or four very good youngsters
:15:01. > :15:08.in this. Mo Farah tucked in the middle with his training partner,
:15:09. > :15:14.Abdi, on his right. The Ethiopian, Rop, getting closer on his outside.
:15:15. > :15:18.Sometimes it takes a while to extricate himself, but once he gets
:15:19. > :15:22.moving, he's pretty quick. Five to go.
:15:23. > :15:31.Gisamoda leading on the inside. Ibrahimov, kej, Mo Farah, side
:15:32. > :15:36.stepping there neatly, he has been tripped a few times in the final of
:15:37. > :15:41.the 10,000 metres and if Rio, and during the heats of the 5,000 last
:15:42. > :15:46.time. He has such strength, inner body strength, his core stability is
:15:47. > :15:53.really strong, so when he does get off balance he can balance himself
:15:54. > :15:58.up again. His speed is never in question, and it is going through
:15:59. > :16:02.the motions here, but the pace, beginning to lift a little. The last
:16:03. > :16:06.200 metres is beginning to lift. That lap of 66 is not doing any
:16:07. > :16:11.damage to anybody. It is comfortable for the vast majority of this field.
:16:12. > :16:16.A bit of pushing and shoving. The Canadian Knight got a bit of an
:16:17. > :16:20.elbow from Edris, he is trying to follow Farah. Edris can get.
:16:21. > :16:23.Kejelcha can kick, of course Mo Farah can kick, what about the
:16:24. > :16:28.others though, they are lining up, four laps to go. Gisamoda, trying to
:16:29. > :16:38.put a bit of pace on at the front. They are not interested in him. It
:16:39. > :16:42.St these two Ethopians. Ibrahimov on the inside. Kiplimo coming out. The
:16:43. > :16:46.young cross-country champion looking for some room. They are all still
:16:47. > :16:52.there. They are bunched. They have a chance. There is too many of them.
:16:53. > :16:55.Far too many here. Now, when you get in a group like this, you know there
:16:56. > :16:58.is only five to qualify. The advantage goes to the second heat.
:16:59. > :17:02.They can see what time you have to run and they can work it between
:17:03. > :17:13.them. Now, some of these athletes are going to panic. Somebody is
:17:14. > :17:18.going to try and make a run for it. Mow is in a good position. Edris,
:17:19. > :17:22.and Kiplimo there, but really there is far too many for comfort here as
:17:23. > :17:28.they come down the straight, three laps to go.
:17:29. > :17:35.Kiplimo having a look across at Mo Farah. Rop has always been in a good
:17:36. > :17:42.position. Kejelcha, dangerous. In more ways than one, the long legs of
:17:43. > :17:46.his sometimes can be a danger. Mow likes to keep out of trouble, make
:17:47. > :17:50.others come wide. Give himself room. Exactly the right thing do when you
:17:51. > :17:54.are in a group like this. They are all lining up behind Mo Farah. Look
:17:55. > :17:59.at McDonald, the Australian who has had a cracking year, he thinks we
:18:00. > :18:04.need to get this moving. Jenkin, Edris,ed Ritz has been back and
:18:05. > :18:10.forward and an elbow in the tummy from Rop. Some pushing and shoving.
:18:11. > :18:15.A few words exchanged. 11 minutes through 4,000 metre, so that is not
:18:16. > :18:19.very quick at all. Mo Farah knows, it is only first five to qualify.
:18:20. > :18:23.Now he moves on the outside. He looks ahead. He has been watching
:18:24. > :18:26.the screen all round and the screen has only been telling him one thing,
:18:27. > :18:32.you can't relax, there is too many here for comfort. Here they go. Two
:18:33. > :18:38.laps to go, ebbmove starts to make a move on the inside. Kejelcha goes
:18:39. > :18:42.with him. Edris is loitering. Mo is in a good place. He drifts yards the
:18:43. > :18:46.front. Put himself right and he will make sure that he will only do
:18:47. > :18:52.enough on the last lap and three-quarters.
:18:53. > :18:55.I get the feeling there will be one of the bigger names comes a cropper
:18:56. > :18:58.here. I don't mean in terms of falling over or anything, I just
:18:59. > :19:03.mean there is always someone when it is this slow who is quicker than you
:19:04. > :19:08.think. Not expected to be able to sprint but can. Kejelcha and Farah.
:19:09. > :19:14.Edris on the outside. Abdi on the inside. Kifle is there. The tannian
:19:15. > :19:18.still getting a shove there and moves round the outside. Gisamoda.
:19:19. > :19:22.So mow controlling it. He doesn't want to lose that position now,
:19:23. > :19:26.there is still plenty in with a chance. He does this really well
:19:27. > :19:29.though, when he gets near enough to the front and he starts to decide it
:19:30. > :19:33.is time to take control, now you will watch him, he won't want to
:19:34. > :19:37.concede any position here. He won't want to do anything that makes him
:19:38. > :19:43.have to have an extra hard run on the last lap. 12.32. Let us see how
:19:44. > :19:47.fast it is. Kejelcha looks comed forable. Mo looks strong. On the
:19:48. > :19:52.outside he is having to pass an athlete. A that is the danger. His
:19:53. > :19:56.training mate on the inside and Edris coming, Mo is looking and
:19:57. > :20:01.counting. There is still one too many. Only five to go through by
:20:02. > :20:05.rights. They are lapping runners all the time. Farah checking his
:20:06. > :20:10.training partner on the inside. Rop is coming on the outside. Kiplimo is
:20:11. > :20:19.there. Jenkinses of the USA is coming. So is Knight up, Canada.
:20:20. > :20:23.Still haven't got themselves clear. Top five, Kejelcha, Farah, Edris, Mo
:20:24. > :20:28.is having to work hard but he is checking round. Kifle is there, Abdi
:20:29. > :20:35.trying to hang in, Knight of Canada, finishing quickly, he will get in
:20:36. > :20:45.the top five. Kejelcha, Farah, Edris, Knight, Kifle, they are your
:20:46. > :20:50.top five. 13.30. Do you know, you just... When you
:20:51. > :20:53.watch races like this you are waiting for something to happen, you
:20:54. > :20:58.know, whether someone is tripping or falling. I get nervous when there is
:20:59. > :21:04.so many of them, you know, they know where they want to be, nobody wants
:21:05. > :21:08.to run that hard on the last lap, if mow is included in that, I am sow
:21:09. > :21:12.pleased. It is almost a sense of leaf he has got through OK. The most
:21:13. > :21:18.nervous I got is when you said somebody is going to come a cropper.
:21:19. > :21:23.I know you meant it from qualifying. I thought my goodness, remember hen
:21:24. > :21:27.he got tripped in Rio. That was comfortable running from Mo Farah.
:21:28. > :21:32.Here they r Kejelcha, looking comfortable. Mo checking inside.
:21:33. > :21:38.Outside, Edris is ready there, Abdi on the inside. His training partner.
:21:39. > :21:43.Here comes Kifle andmove was pushed and stumbled there Mo is relaxing,
:21:44. > :21:48.he knows he has done enough and Knight is coming through, Kifle on
:21:49. > :21:51.the inside, in the green vest, Mo doing enough, Kejelcha trying to
:21:52. > :21:57.prove a point but Mo didn't recognise that. Didn't let him, you
:21:58. > :22:01.are got going to psychological benefit from that. You didn't beat
:22:02. > :22:06.me. You beat me but I am not bothered. Kejelcha, a very good
:22:07. > :22:12.athlete. Edris, very good. Mo looking round, in control as we have
:22:13. > :22:17.seen him so often. Comfortable but 5,000 metres heats. No matter how
:22:18. > :22:21.steady you run, you rush at the end, it really does tire you. It is a
:22:22. > :22:25.tiring one but now he has qualified for the final. That is the one we
:22:26. > :22:29.are waiting for. Kejelcha will be a danger, Edris will be a danger but
:22:30. > :22:33.Mo, there he is saying he will come through, you can't control it in the
:22:34. > :22:39.home straight, it doesn't matter what else happens. Well done,
:22:40. > :22:42.comfortable qualification, we can rook forward to Saturday with
:22:43. > :22:46.excitement. It was Knight the Canadian who
:22:47. > :22:50.surprised everybody, the 21-year-old gets in there in the top five. The
:22:51. > :22:55.others will have to wait and see, whether or not how fast the second
:22:56. > :23:03.race goes. Let us hear his view on that race.
:23:04. > :23:08.Well done. You have the adoration of the crowd and reDevly so. How is the
:23:09. > :23:13.body? A bit tired, but it is all good. I have to recover now, and, it
:23:14. > :23:17.was a tough run from the 10k, to come out again, to qualify, it is a
:23:18. > :23:21.good thing. I could just go back and rest up and see what I can do.
:23:22. > :23:25.Mentally how difficult is it when you had the big high of a 10k win
:23:26. > :23:30.and you have to level just out to do it again? It is pretty difficult to
:23:31. > :23:33.pick yourself back up again, but this is what it is about. You have
:23:34. > :23:38.to pick yourself up. You are not going to win. You have to recover,
:23:39. > :23:42.switch off, turn the lights off and get into the zone. You have done it
:23:43. > :23:47.time and time again, we have seen that. I know Brendan was talking
:23:48. > :23:51.about every step is like a reluctant step. A necessary evil? You have to
:23:52. > :23:55.do it. That is what it takes as he said, no-one is going to get it for
:23:56. > :23:59.you, do it for you for the rounds, you have to do it through the
:24:00. > :24:03.rounds, the rounds are the hardest part because you have done it and to
:24:04. > :24:08.come back. For the final and another piece of history if you can do the
:24:09. > :24:13.double again. You cement your place in history again, how about that?
:24:14. > :24:19.Definitely. Everything is possible. That is what I said. That is my
:24:20. > :24:23.philosophy, that is how I have been training. That is what the Kenyans
:24:24. > :24:27.say, you can't dream of something unless you do something about it. I
:24:28. > :24:31.have been given a chance in life. I work hard for it and I achieve what
:24:32. > :24:35.I have to through hard work and keep grafting. To the kids out there you
:24:36. > :24:41.can be like me and we have to start thinking about how we can get the
:24:42. > :24:48.next generation and see if we can leave a legacy behind. You are a
:24:49. > :24:53.true inspiration Mo. Good luck in the 10k -- in the final.
:24:54. > :24:58.While all that was happening there was some bad news over in the long
:24:59. > :25:06.jump. For Great Britain. Shara Proctor, she was in 12th place, with
:25:07. > :25:14.a jump of 6.45 but the multi-eventer Pratt of Germany did this.
:25:15. > :25:23.-- Rath. Did this. It was enough to knock Shara down into 13th place.
:25:24. > :25:28.Only 12 make qualifying, so real disappointment to come so close,
:25:29. > :25:36.Salman-Rath, that jump six metres 52. Justed 6.5 in the heptathlon.
:25:37. > :25:41.Finished eight overall, it is only a few days ago she was running an 800.
:25:42. > :25:47.A bit long on the last step but enough to carry her in. Look how
:25:48. > :25:55.happy she is. Sixth best qualifier and well, only one Briton, there she
:25:56. > :26:01.is. Lorraine Ugen, really good jump. Look, nobody jumped beyond 6.70. The
:26:02. > :26:08.auto qualifier. We can't remember the last time that happened.
:26:09. > :26:11.Klishina the best of the jumpers and two Americans Reese and Bartoletta,
:26:12. > :26:17.definitely contenders for gold as is Lorraine Ugen, goes into Friday's
:26:18. > :26:23.final. So the rain continues to fall, but
:26:24. > :26:29.the athletics is coming thick and fast, some hot action still to come.
:26:30. > :26:34.Mo Farah there, you know, great, a great line from Bren. You have to do
:26:35. > :26:37.it to get in the final. In a way it's a procession but it is still
:26:38. > :26:41.hard work for him. It is. It is hard work because anything can happen.
:26:42. > :26:46.You need to stay out of trouble. There was a big bunch of people, Mo
:26:47. > :26:51.controlled that race, it probably will have, he would have liked to
:26:52. > :26:57.have his legs to have a run out. Without a doubt, down that last
:26:58. > :27:01.200-metre he was looking out for his training partner, Abdi and trying to
:27:02. > :27:06.to make sure he didn't cut him off. Abdi was run out by Knight. He was
:27:07. > :27:11.looking over his shoulder to make sure he was doing the best he could
:27:12. > :27:15.for him, which not dodgy tack Dix because he was fine in in and in
:27:16. > :27:19.control, but wear and giving himself a bit more to think about perhaps.
:27:20. > :27:23.It shows how comfortable he was and how much in control. The danger was
:27:24. > :27:28.they were lapping runners and as they were people would not have
:27:29. > :27:32.space to come through, as they settled after they went round. That
:27:33. > :27:37.is where he was making sure. Butchart is going in the next one
:27:38. > :27:42.and Mark Scott. Andy Butchart has made great progress over the last
:27:43. > :27:45.year, and looking in great shape, through the winter, and, coming
:27:46. > :27:50.through the seasons so far, he will expect to make this final and push
:27:51. > :27:55.Mo and the rest all the way. He will expect to make this final, he needs
:27:56. > :27:59.to run it well, he needs to judge it right but they have theed advantage
:28:00. > :28:06.of knowing what they are aiming for for the fastest losers spot. He is
:28:07. > :28:13.from Dunblane. You don't get a tan like that, do you Andy? You can go
:28:14. > :28:20.to a salon. It is not a big place, just north of Stirling but what a
:28:21. > :28:23.sporting pedigree it has, the Murray brothers and Andy Butchart. If you
:28:24. > :28:27.look at the season's bests time, we will talk about it in a moment.
:28:28. > :28:33.There are six men who have gone quicker this season in this heat.
:28:34. > :28:40.The big news as we look at the line up is Gebrhiwet is not starting. He
:28:41. > :28:45.is still rocking the tash, you can barely see it but it is there.
:28:46. > :28:50.Ringer the German and Menjo, not a strong Kenyan line up over the to
:28:51. > :28:56.heats. Mark Scott the Yorkshireman, who is at college in the States at
:28:57. > :29:00.the University of Tulsa. He has a good kick, so I think his best
:29:01. > :29:05.chance might be if this is a slower heat, and he can take his chances to
:29:06. > :29:16.the end, but again, everyone here knows what has to be done in terms
:29:17. > :29:24.of times. You saw Rutto. Hill gets the full introduction, a man not far
:29:25. > :29:30.away from 13 minutes. Barega. The world youth champion
:29:31. > :29:36.here over 3,000 metres. The Ethopian talent comes through at 17, 18, 19,
:29:37. > :29:42.it is astonishing and Andy Butchart up against this line up. So too Mark
:29:43. > :29:49.Scott. We saw in Rio with that sixth place finish, what Butchart can do.
:29:50. > :29:59.To make the final was his first objective, and then see what happens
:30:00. > :30:04.in that final. Six place in the Olympics was great for Butchart, but
:30:05. > :30:09.it made a lot of people think that he was the next Mo Farah. There's
:30:10. > :30:15.not going to be another Mo Farah in Great Britain for a long time, but
:30:16. > :30:19.he is a great British athlete. He is, and that run in Rio was
:30:20. > :30:28.absolutely fantastic. The confidence he picked up from that has good him
:30:29. > :30:40.in good stead. Every one of these athletes apart from one has one well
:30:41. > :30:45.faster than 13.30 four 5000 metres, which is the speed of the previous
:30:46. > :30:49.heat. So they could well qualify. I think it would be a good idea if
:30:50. > :30:59.they worked the lap between them. They are well on schedule. 65 second
:31:00. > :31:04.laps, they will run well under 13.30, which would mean that ten of
:31:05. > :31:16.these athletes could qualify. I would advise these athletes to share
:31:17. > :31:19.the place, and keep it faster no faster than 65. There is an
:31:20. > :31:24.advantage to running the second heat, and tonight these guys have
:31:25. > :31:29.that advantage, and it's a big one. The first heat was slow, and this
:31:30. > :31:34.one is going faster. It's down to a few of these athletes to do what
:31:35. > :31:48.they need to do. The Ugandan out in front. Rutto. He won the Kenyan
:31:49. > :31:53.trials. Had a quick run in Boston in June, just outside 13 minutes. But
:31:54. > :31:59.some very disappointing runs as well. The Norwegian decides to pick
:32:00. > :32:05.up the pace a little bit, Moen. He knows what he has to do. He thinks
:32:06. > :32:12.his only chance is to go through as one of the fastest losers, so lifted
:32:13. > :32:18.the pace a bit. Bay can easily run 65 seconds for these 12.5 laps, and
:32:19. > :32:25.so they should, apply themselves and share it between them. It makes it
:32:26. > :32:30.much easier task. We could have two Britons in the final, to add to Mo
:32:31. > :32:39.Farah. It would be wonderful to see two or three Brits in the final of
:32:40. > :32:50.the 5000 metres. 2.44 for the first 1000 metres. That is OK. If you are
:32:51. > :32:58.looking at the splits, 2.40. All of these athletes know, they will have
:32:59. > :33:01.seen the times, and they know what needs to be done. Most of these
:33:02. > :33:11.athletes are capable of going below 13 point 30, the winning time of
:33:12. > :33:17.that previous heat. Andy Butchart in sixth place at the moment. Five go
:33:18. > :33:21.through automatically. On the inside there, a very confident young
:33:22. > :33:30.Scotsman with a great future ahead of him, Andy Butchart. I know how he
:33:31. > :33:36.feels about distance running. I know how he feels about his future.
:33:37. > :33:41.Certainly, he has chances to take over the mantle that will come when
:33:42. > :33:46.Mo steps of the track. This young man has a great future ahead of him
:33:47. > :33:53.on the track, on the roads and for the country, following that recent
:33:54. > :33:57.tradition of developing athletes in Scotland. They have some real top
:33:58. > :34:05.athletes in Scotland, and he's definitely one of them. Moen doing a
:34:06. > :34:09.good job in the lead. Mark Scott is one of them as well, from Richmond
:34:10. > :34:22.Harriers. His first major international event.
:34:23. > :34:38.The women's shot put final about to start. It's going to be a real
:34:39. > :34:46.ding-dong battle. If it's anything like the men's, it's going to be a
:34:47. > :34:54.real tussle. I mentioned Yang Gao. This is Lijao Gong, the world
:34:55. > :35:00.leader. Anything over 18 metres in these conditions would be very good
:35:01. > :35:09.to start with. This will take the lead so far. The lead so far is
:35:10. > :35:15.Anita Marton, with 18.50. Yang Gao, lots of silvers and bronzes over the
:35:16. > :35:21.last arcade. Never has she taken gold in a global major. This is
:35:22. > :35:27.probably her best chance, with the reigning champion just having had
:35:28. > :35:34.twins, and Valerie Adams missing, expecting her first baby in October.
:35:35. > :35:40.Michelle Carter has really proven she can compete when it matters
:35:41. > :35:46.most. The last throw of the Olympic final in Rio took the title there.
:35:47. > :35:53.Quite a simple technique. Sets her top half up well and drives hard
:35:54. > :36:05.with her legs. But... I reckon that is short of Lijao Gong's efforts.
:36:06. > :36:11.Carter does take a few rounds to get going. It popped out left on her.
:36:12. > :36:19.Difficult conditions, as we've seen, in this even being session. It has
:36:20. > :36:23.not stopped raining right from the start. Carter goes into second
:36:24. > :36:27.place. A very different feel to this second
:36:28. > :36:32.heat in this men's 5000 metres. You don't have some of the athletes
:36:33. > :36:37.falling off and getting lapped in the latter stages. A much more
:36:38. > :36:45.compacted field. Pretty good strength throughout. The Ugandan who
:36:46. > :36:50.was silver behind Mo Farah in the 10,000 metres was supposed to run in
:36:51. > :36:56.this, but it is Kissa of Uganda running in this. Mark Scott, the
:36:57. > :37:06.Yorkshireman, at the back and trying to maintain contact at the moment.
:37:07. > :37:10.More of a marathon runner than Butchart. Around five seconds
:37:11. > :37:17.quicker than the first heat, so that is one of the things they will be
:37:18. > :37:22.looking out for. Chelimo, the US champion, who destroyed the field in
:37:23. > :37:27.Sacramento. A big talent, and maybe a threat to Mo Farah in the final.
:37:28. > :37:36.You're right. We know how good he is. Olympic silver medallist behind
:37:37. > :37:39.Mo in Rio. And the young Ethiopian, Barega, the junior champion last
:37:40. > :37:45.year. He has taken the lead and is moving it along. The group is
:37:46. > :37:52.slightly smaller. There's still a lot of them there. They need to keep
:37:53. > :37:58.the pressure on, as they come onto the 3000 metre mark. The time is
:37:59. > :38:07.comparatively quick. Now they have a bit to do. 2.41, a faster kilometre.
:38:08. > :38:14.They are doing the right thing. If they hadn't run like this, their
:38:15. > :38:20.coaches would have gone mad at them. A stumble by Chelimo, and a little
:38:21. > :38:27.bit of an argument there. There's no point doing that. You need to
:38:28. > :38:30.concentrate on running. He is having an argument with Balew, the EEC
:38:31. > :38:37.apian running for Bahrain at the moment. A bit of an argument going
:38:38. > :38:45.on. I don't think Balew is going to get involved in any discussion.
:38:46. > :38:53.Kissa, a 13.13 man. In third place right now. Down goes Chelimo! He
:38:54. > :38:58.needs to get himself back in here. He would be a danger to Mo Farah if
:38:59. > :39:03.he could get through to the final. It's happened just about early
:39:04. > :39:12.enough, if Chelimo can get back in. It was a pure accident that time. I
:39:13. > :39:18.know that was an -- there was an argument last time, but not there.
:39:19. > :39:25.Chelimo is good enough and strong enough, but he's got to control
:39:26. > :39:30.himself. Think about it. Don't use any of the anger caused by this fall
:39:31. > :39:37.and the argument. He hasn't had a smooth ride and his coaches will not
:39:38. > :39:42.be very happy with that. They are going fast enough to qualify. There
:39:43. > :39:47.is another one. They need to start thinking about track discipline. You
:39:48. > :39:52.don't just dive in and dive out. You've got to take it smooth. You
:39:53. > :39:58.might get in trouble, but somebody else is going to get in trouble as
:39:59. > :40:03.well. Andy Butchart just stepping away from a clip on the heels. All
:40:04. > :40:09.the time you are thinking, if you are Julie Mo, I've fallen, and you
:40:10. > :40:19.panic. He will be thinking, what have I spent here that will cost me
:40:20. > :40:23.later in the race? He is back in there now. We are looking at the
:40:24. > :40:34.pace. It is a little bit faster there. The top five go through, and
:40:35. > :40:42.the five fastest losers. You've got to do some sums when you are
:40:43. > :40:47.running. 10.49 for 4000 metres, so ten seconds faster than the first
:40:48. > :40:53.heat. Ten of these athletes, if they keep going at their regular pace,
:40:54. > :40:58.will qualify for the final. So he needs to qualify for the race and
:40:59. > :41:05.not settle any arguments. You can settle arguments after the race, not
:41:06. > :41:14.now. Rutto coming on the outside. Andy but chart must know now what
:41:15. > :41:18.he's got to do. They are racing. Some probably haven't been paying
:41:19. > :41:23.enough attention to the overall pace. Maybe they don't know what
:41:24. > :41:27.happened in the previous heat, but the messages, keep moving, keep
:41:28. > :41:35.doing what you're doing, and ten could go through. It is a bit of a
:41:36. > :41:42.race, but an easier one now, with 600 metres to go. The King at
:41:43. > :41:52.numbers of about 14, 16 there, but Moen the Norwegian is about...
:41:53. > :42:03.Dropping back. Have D from Eritrea comes round. -- Habte. Rutto is
:42:04. > :42:11.trying to free himself. Still a bit of danger. It is a bit cluttered. It
:42:12. > :42:17.is. These athletes are experienced, but are really losing their track
:42:18. > :42:26.discipline. Andy but Butchart doesn't have to do anything. It is
:42:27. > :42:32.about holding position now. You don't have to be in the first five,
:42:33. > :42:37.but just alongside them. There is the qualification. Ten of these
:42:38. > :42:49.athletes, and ten are pulling clear. Andy Butchart able to pull through.
:42:50. > :42:56.Back to Ryan Hill, the American, so ate there, and then two from the
:42:57. > :43:00.others. Chelimo has done very well to get himself back into this after
:43:01. > :43:08.a nasty fall, but it was just early enough for him to get back in and
:43:09. > :43:13.get a qualifying place. Barega is there, and Balew. Having a chat
:43:14. > :43:18.there with Chelimo, but a friendly chat. A lot of barging going on. I
:43:19. > :43:30.don't think Butchart was involved at all. Andy Butchart was comfortable.
:43:31. > :43:34.Mark Scott coming down the home straight now, and enjoying his World
:43:35. > :43:40.Championship experience. He was waving to the crowd and saying, make
:43:41. > :43:48.a little noise for me. He has enjoyed his experience, but was some
:43:49. > :43:54.way off. But Andy Butchart is safely through. A well calculated race
:43:55. > :43:59.there from Andy Butchart. He obviously was aware of what was
:44:00. > :44:06.going on. He is now telling Chelimo, don't worry about that fall, don't
:44:07. > :44:10.get angry, just leave it alone. It was an accident, it's what happens.
:44:11. > :44:16.Chelimo doesn't seem to agree with that, so I'm sure there will be some
:44:17. > :44:24.conversations in the tunnel. There is Barega, a very strong athlete. He
:44:25. > :44:32.is going to be a danger. Tiernan ran well. He set the pace going. But the
:44:33. > :44:36.union of distance runners decided that 13.30 was a time they could
:44:37. > :44:44.run. Ten actually ran faster than that. Andy Butchart had it all
:44:45. > :44:49.calculated and knew what he had to do. Ran alongside Chelimo telling
:44:50. > :44:56.him, we're all right, we've qualified. A smile in the home
:44:57. > :45:00.straight. Let's hope we see a smile in the home straight on Saturday.
:45:01. > :45:07.Well done, Andy. Comfortable qualifying. Comfortable in
:45:08. > :45:14.qualifying and able to have a chat and a smile with Chelimo on the way
:45:15. > :45:19.home. You must be pleased. Yes, just get back, freshen up, come back for
:45:20. > :45:24.the final. As a distance runner, you must have been thrilled with the
:45:25. > :45:30.conditions. I love to run in the race. These guys run hard, so it was
:45:31. > :45:36.choppy with some water in your face. You had to do some hurdling at one
:45:37. > :45:42.point as well. Chelimo was in front of me, but because it was a slow
:45:43. > :45:45.race, it was bouquet. Tell me about the mathematics. You were trying to
:45:46. > :45:56.keep an eye on your position and the time. 13.30 was the time for the
:45:57. > :45:59.next fastest loser. So I was just counting the numbers and looking at
:46:00. > :46:08.the big screen. I could see I was clear. What were you saying to
:46:09. > :46:17.Chelimo as you came in. I said, chill, we are through. He was a bit
:46:18. > :46:21.angry. We chat quite a bit, so... And what could you do in the final?
:46:22. > :46:27.You were impressive in Rio in the final last year? It is nice to get
:46:28. > :46:33.to a world champs final. We don't know what will happen in the final.
:46:34. > :46:38.Mo is there. Who knows what will happen if we work together. I would
:46:39. > :46:41.be happy to manage fourth place like the rest of the guys. All the best.
:46:42. > :46:46.Scott. We saw in Rio with that sixth place finish, what Butchart can do.
:46:47. > :46:53.This is turning into a war of attrition. Gong Lijao leads with
:46:54. > :46:58.19.16. The on athlete who has gone beyond 19 metres so far. We are into
:46:59. > :47:05.the second round. Gong looking to extend her lead. Maybe closer to 20
:47:06. > :47:11.metres. A big scream from her. Taking on terrible conditions.
:47:12. > :47:17.Pretty well at this stage. Her team-mate you can see, Gao.
:47:18. > :47:23.18.03. Her best so far. She is in sixth place. Michelle Carter is in
:47:24. > :47:31.bronze with 18.82 and Anita Marton with 18.50.
:47:32. > :47:40.Gong has then 19.35. Still out in front. So Andy Butchart safely
:47:41. > :47:44.through following Mo Farah from that first heat, and Butchart just
:47:45. > :47:50.telling fill Phil what he was saying to Chelimo. Chelimo is in the US
:47:51. > :47:56.Army. So if all the people, you don't want to mess with, it is him.
:47:57. > :47:59.But it was fractious. It was, I was worried at one stage, because when
:48:00. > :48:06.Chelimo went down Butchart was caught up in that and he was
:48:07. > :48:09.struggling. It looked like he was limping so I am happy to see him
:48:10. > :48:13.joking round. He is is a great character, a big part of the team
:48:14. > :48:18.and I know he did take Langford under his wing a bit. So Kyle has
:48:19. > :48:21.given him a run for his money in the tash department. And that cheeky
:48:22. > :48:25.comment about the fourth place, he does have aspirations to get himself
:48:26. > :48:29.among the medals He mows he is many great shape. He ran really well last
:48:30. > :48:37.year in lie owe, but he is another of those in the aim way that Kyle is
:48:38. > :48:40.talking about what he want tots aim for next, Callum Hawkins, Andrew
:48:41. > :48:45.Butchart isn't happy with sixth place, he knows he is can do better.
:48:46. > :48:49.He has worked with Mo, he knows where he is in relation to Mo's
:48:50. > :48:54.training and he knows what he is capable of. Saturday night Mo
:48:55. > :49:00.Farah's last ever track race in a Championship. He will be appearing
:49:01. > :49:05.on the track but his last chance of another global gold. If you have
:49:06. > :49:13.been with us, you will know the saga of Isaac Makwala, it took another
:49:14. > :49:41.turn this evening. When the IAAF released this statement.
:49:42. > :49:47.In evening when it was light but definitely raining Isaac Makwala
:49:48. > :49:51.came out on the track, on his own, in lane seven Michael Johnson and
:49:52. > :49:57.did exactly what he had to do. He did. It is great to see that he had
:49:58. > :50:02.this opportunity and he had fantastic support from the crowd,
:50:03. > :50:09.that was here, to witness this, cheering him on, to a 20.2 single
:50:10. > :50:14.run, maybe a world record for a single run out of Championships.
:50:15. > :50:17.Followed by a few push ups. Michael Johnson and did exactly what he had
:50:18. > :50:20.to do. He did. It is great to see that he had this opportunity and he
:50:21. > :50:22.had fantastic support from the crowd, that was here, to witness
:50:23. > :50:25.this, cheering him on, to a 20.2 single run, maybe a world record for
:50:26. > :50:28.a single run out of Championships. Followed by a few push ups. "I am
:50:29. > :50:31.fit". Doing the push up, he will be in the semifinal. So it is a great
:50:32. > :50:33.opportunity for him to hopefully make it into the final eventually.
:50:34. > :50:36.Watched by Wayde van Niekerk there as well, who had spoken last night
:50:37. > :50:39.about his sadness of not competing against him in the 400-metre final.
:50:40. > :50:41.He is out on the track. Two hours later, he is in the first of these
:50:42. > :50:44.heats, Michael. We have no idea, obviously that will have taken
:50:45. > :50:47.something out of him because he was sick a couple of days ago. We will
:50:48. > :50:50.have to see whether it has taken a lot out of him or if he has enough
:50:51. > :50:54.left to make it through to the final. What do you think? From what
:50:55. > :50:59.I saw, I think, I mean I think he will be OK, I think he will start
:51:00. > :51:03.running off adrenaline at this point, he has got the sympathy of
:51:04. > :51:07.the world, and certainly everyone in this stadium, that is rooting for
:51:08. > :51:16.him to get into that final. I think than given that earlier this year,
:51:17. > :51:20.he ran very quick in the same day in Madrid, he is definitely in great
:51:21. > :51:24.shape and great condition this year, that is certainly an indication he
:51:25. > :51:29.can come back from a race, 400 metres and come back and run a fast
:51:30. > :51:36.200 metres so today he has had to run a 200 and come back and run
:51:37. > :51:41.another 200. There is a Brit in each of these heats. Mitchell-Blake is
:51:42. > :51:47.starting to realise that potential that we knew he had. He has run
:51:48. > :51:51.consistently this year, we saw him in the trials, very confident run,
:51:52. > :51:55.you know, he is still relatively unknown to the British public, but
:51:56. > :51:59.these are the Championships that could establish him as a firm
:52:00. > :52:04.British favourite. Phil Jones caught up with him ahead of the
:52:05. > :52:11.Championships. Can I ask you to do a loud clap.
:52:12. > :52:23.That is for no other reason that... I would have been surprised.
:52:24. > :52:29.You are not going to say no BBC. I was born in East London, then I
:52:30. > :52:35.moved to Jamaica when I was 13. Resided there for five years and
:52:36. > :52:39.then I got a track scholarship to a universe any the States where I
:52:40. > :52:44.studied international trade and finance. I made youth, European
:52:45. > :52:48.juniors and made the European senior team and now World Championships. At
:52:49. > :52:55.the worlds in your event, it seems it is pretty much wide-open, is that
:52:56. > :53:02.fair to say Yes, I believe every event is wide-open. In previous
:53:03. > :53:04.year, the numbers were higher, so I believe everybody believes within
:53:05. > :53:10.themselves they can do something special. How important is it for you
:53:11. > :53:18.to know you are one of those guys that can run sub 20? I know I've
:53:19. > :53:23.done it and I know I am in better shape than last year. It is about
:53:24. > :53:28.piecing it together. What matters is getting top two finish and in the
:53:29. > :53:32.final ultimately get a medal. What about that experience from Rio, did
:53:33. > :53:37.it surprise you being on the global stage, did you learn a massive
:53:38. > :53:41.amount from it or not. I learn every day, Rio was a big learning curve
:53:42. > :53:46.for me and I think I needed it. It has helped me become the person I am
:53:47. > :53:49.this year, it has helped me understand the sport on a world
:53:50. > :53:54.leave, what it takes to compete with the world's best.
:53:55. > :53:58.And to have the Championships in London, it is going to give it that
:53:59. > :54:01.added edge, excitement and especially when you are from that
:54:02. > :54:06.area in the first place, as you are, so how special is it for you? Second
:54:07. > :54:11.to none. I believe it is everybody dreams in the sport to be able to
:54:12. > :54:16.compete in front of their home crowd, for that to come true is
:54:17. > :54:23.something I am not taking for granted and looking forward to.
:54:24. > :54:27.College education in America, part of his childhood in Jamaica, but he
:54:28. > :54:31.is very proud to be representing Great Britain in front of his home
:54:32. > :54:37.crowd and hoping to make it through that final. Steve Cram. Well, his
:54:38. > :54:41.task has been made harder by the inclusion of Isaac Makwala in this
:54:42. > :54:44.first semifinal. He would have woke up this morning thinking yes, he
:54:45. > :54:49.looks at that start list and thinks I have a great chance, he still has
:54:50. > :54:56.a great chance, it has been made that bit more difficult.
:54:57. > :55:03.Or even a lot more difficult because Makwala, although he is in lane one,
:55:04. > :55:07.isn't just there, and he is the world's fastest 200-metre runner of
:55:08. > :55:12.the year, everyone in lane one he will be a threat. As will Simbine
:55:13. > :55:16.who finished fifth in the 100-metre final. This the man who made it
:55:17. > :55:27.through because Makwala didn't turn up. He finished third at 100 metres
:55:28. > :55:33.in the junior championship Tortu. Lima goes in lane two. Then Makwala,
:55:34. > :55:50.I am sure he will get a huge, huge reception from the crowd. He does.
:55:51. > :55:59.So outside of Mitchell-Blake, we haven't seen Greaux or Young. Iizuka
:56:00. > :56:05.of Japan and Dwyer the Commonwealth champion. Mitchell-Blake needs to be
:56:06. > :56:10.at his best. He has run 20.04. A season's best, not far outside that
:56:11. > :56:14.in qualification. She Britain's second fastest at this distance
:56:15. > :56:20.behind John Regis, he needs to be quick here.
:56:21. > :56:21.Omit the toll two to go there -- only the top two to go through to
:56:22. > :56:28.the final. He gets a good start does
:56:29. > :56:34.Mitchell-Blake. Inside. Simbine gets a good start. Makwala going well and
:56:35. > :56:37.Young. Mitchell-Blake is in the race, Makwala has run a brilliant
:56:38. > :56:42.bend. Makwala. Mitchell-Blake, trying to charge, he is going to go
:56:43. > :56:48.some. These three are pulling away, Makwala just tiring a bit. It is
:56:49. > :56:53.going to be Makwala, and Young, Mitchell-Blake third, what a
:56:54. > :56:57.performance from Makwala. Lane one, and he is still in the rain, he is
:56:58. > :57:01.splashing through the puddles, is quick enough and good enough. He has
:57:02. > :57:07.just finished behind Young. Young won it. Mitchell-Blake ran well. He
:57:08. > :57:12.has to wait now, 20.19, there are two fastest loser spots available.
:57:13. > :57:16.It is cold, wet, he didn't get in the top two, these semis are tough,
:57:17. > :57:21.they are very very tough indeed. I don't think he could really think he
:57:22. > :57:25.did too much wrong, maybe not quite as good off the bend as we have seen
:57:26. > :57:28.from him in the past. He was charging at the end. Talk through
:57:29. > :57:34.this. Makwala, what about him in lane one. You can't forget him. He
:57:35. > :57:37.has that 200 in him already. We are wondering what he could do,
:57:38. > :57:40.two-and-a-half hours later, that is what he has done, put himself in
:57:41. > :57:46.that final. But you are right, Steve. I was watching
:57:47. > :57:51.Mitchell-Blake, I was seeing if he could hang on in there. His didn't
:57:52. > :57:56.do too much wrong, you are right Steve. I think the others in front
:57:57. > :58:09.of him were just too good on this particular day. 20.19? It may be
:58:10. > :58:14.enough. 20.19. You should be able to make the final. Isaac, come on in as
:58:15. > :58:24.well. Come and have a chat to us as well. Isaac. Fastest loser, if I get
:58:25. > :58:28.it I give get it but I wanted automatic qualification. And as far
:58:29. > :58:31.you your second race of the day I sacks you ran on your own to qualify
:58:32. > :58:38.for this position, how was that first of all? You know, first of
:58:39. > :58:44.all, God is great. I put everything on good. After what happened. You
:58:45. > :58:50.know. So I thank God for what, all this. You said only earlier you were
:58:51. > :58:54.heartbroken at not being able to run the 400, what does it mean to be
:58:55. > :59:01.challenging for medals and the crowd's reception. I am still
:59:02. > :59:07.running with the heartbroken. I wish I had run the 400 first. I was ready
:59:08. > :59:12.for running the 400. Then I could run the 200. I don't know what
:59:13. > :59:18.decision they take for me to not run the final 400. That is the race I am
:59:19. > :59:22.training for. 200 I do it some time, you know, so, I will be fine.
:59:23. > :59:26.What do you think of this man and what he has been able to do?
:59:27. > :59:30.Mentally one of the toughest guys in the sport. It is not easy to go flu
:59:31. > :59:34.what he has been through, I am happy he is in here, he deserves to be in
:59:35. > :59:41.the final. Are you running with anger inside you? Yes, I still want
:59:42. > :59:46.my 400 you know. That is my race. 400 is my race, you know. Isaac, you
:59:47. > :59:50.have come back so well, today, the crowd obviously adore you, we wish
:59:51. > :59:57.you well for the 200 going forward. Thank you. I wish to thank the IAAF
:59:58. > :00:03.to give me another chance and the crowd is so amazing, they did me to
:00:04. > :00:07.believe. The crowd, I want to than than crowd. It is so amazing. We
:00:08. > :00:11.will let you talk to world's press. One last word from a British
:00:12. > :00:15.perspective from you, I know you wanted to get in the automatic two
:00:16. > :00:20.place, the fact that Isaac was here made it more difficult for you, when
:00:21. > :00:29.did you learn about that? My coach told me when I started warming up,
:00:30. > :00:33.but, it doesn't phase me, you know. It is a waiting game now but you
:00:34. > :00:39.have acquitted yourself, the crowd adore you. It has been sensation a.
:00:40. > :00:41.Thank you for everyone cheering for me I appreciate it. Thank you for
:00:42. > :00:56.talking to us and for your patience. Let's have a look at this race
:00:57. > :01:05.again. Nathaniel put himself right in it. You cannot ask for more from
:01:06. > :01:13.anybody. He was very good in the last 50, but coming off the terms,
:01:14. > :01:19.they had him. Back and put you under pressure when you are charging
:01:20. > :01:25.towards the line. He did all his work down the home straight, so this
:01:26. > :01:28.is just the way he runs. He's going to get better, more experienced, and
:01:29. > :01:35.go on the circuit. That will give him more confidence to push on round
:01:36. > :01:39.that Ben. I think, in these conditions, it's going to be
:01:40. > :01:46.anxious. There's lots of good athletes in the other semi finals.
:01:47. > :01:50.That is a very good third place. I don't think we are going to see
:01:51. > :02:02.anything under 20 seconds. The winds are just plus 22. That could have
:02:03. > :02:06.been a factor. His bend does look deceptively slow compare to the
:02:07. > :02:17.other athletes. Michael, can you explain that? McNeil? He loves the
:02:18. > :02:21.100. Some guys come from the 100 and really don't want to attack that
:02:22. > :02:27.bend, which you have to do if you are going to run in world-class 200
:02:28. > :02:34.metre races. You have to attack that bend and have the confidence from
:02:35. > :02:42.your training to hold that. Otherwise, you run a first 60 or 70
:02:43. > :02:49.metres fast, and then take a small break. It is not slowing down, just
:02:50. > :02:53.a small relaxation. You can't just coast around the bend and then
:02:54. > :02:59.think, I'm going to catch them down the home straight, because the race
:03:00. > :03:02.is over. It isn't going to be a very relaxing ten minutes for him,
:03:03. > :03:06.because he will be watching the other heats and hoping his time will
:03:07. > :03:12.be quick enough. Zharnel Hughes will know that and hope he can get to an
:03:13. > :03:18.automatic qualification spot. Spots of rain on the track, that's for
:03:19. > :03:26.sure. Yohan Blake of Jamaica in this one as well. Pro I think the danger
:03:27. > :03:38.to Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake comes from the third heat. Yohan Blake
:03:39. > :03:44.goes here. So long in the shadow of Usain Bolt. In the 100, he was in
:03:45. > :03:48.fourth place. Sidney Siame from Zambia. The 19-year-old who equalled
:03:49. > :04:02.the Zambian record in the first round. There is Jereem Richards.
:04:03. > :04:08.He's gone 19.97 this season. He won his heat. I don't think we will see
:04:09. > :04:17.times as quick as that this evening. King was fourth at the US trials.
:04:18. > :04:26.That was won by Ameer Webb. Here is a Zharnel Hughes. He was fifth in
:04:27. > :04:32.Beijing a couple of years ago. Ran sub 20 that year. Last year had a
:04:33. > :04:39.knee injury and did not find that form again this year. Alex Wilson,
:04:40. > :04:49.the Jamaican who moved to Switzerland at 13. With all the
:04:50. > :05:04.shenanigans going on from here rode the hedgehog. Good times. The second
:05:05. > :05:10.semifinal of the 200 metres. Sani Brown, the 18-year-old Japanese
:05:11. > :05:14.athlete, goes on the outside. Zharnel Hughes has to find some of
:05:15. > :05:21.that form he had a couple of years ago. Looks like he is trying to keep
:05:22. > :05:29.warm. Very, very chilly. The rain still teams down. The time of
:05:30. > :05:44.Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake 20.19. Two to go through automatically.
:05:45. > :05:51.Zharnel Hughes explodes away from the starting block. Yohan Blake
:05:52. > :05:57.moving along as well. Quicker in the outside lanes at the moment. On the
:05:58. > :06:07.outside, Sani Brown, the Japanese athlete. Sani Brown coming through,
:06:08. > :06:13.taking the second automatic qualifying place. There will be
:06:14. > :06:19.nobody there to challenge Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake. What happened to
:06:20. > :06:22.Yohan Blake? Richards is through. Abdul Hakkinen Sani Brown, the
:06:23. > :06:28.18-year-old Japanese, through as well. Yohan Blake will not go
:06:29. > :06:39.through. Big surprise not to see Yohan Blake in that final. A time of
:06:40. > :06:44.20.52. Really struggled. In contrast, Richards, ran a really
:06:45. > :06:51.strong bend and reacted well. The gun goes, crack. A tall, leggy
:06:52. > :06:55.athlete from Trinidad. Gets those really high knees going, even around
:06:56. > :07:04.the turn, reminding me of Don Quarry. Looks very relaxed and in
:07:05. > :07:09.control. He's in search of opposition, and it's not happening.
:07:10. > :07:19.He's so far clear, it's incredible. Easy victory for him. Talking about
:07:20. > :07:25.American sprinting and the 200, it's not a vintage crop at all. King was
:07:26. > :07:31.struggling as well. And a great finish by Sani Brown on the outside.
:07:32. > :07:36.What a great finish by the Japanese. He is known as a 100 metres runner.
:07:37. > :07:43.A surprise to see him run so well and put so many good athletes behind
:07:44. > :07:48.him, but he's in that final. STUDIO: In the next heat, double
:07:49. > :07:52.Olympic champion Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa, one of the huge
:07:53. > :08:09.stars of athletics, being big duck by none other than Usain Bolt.
:08:10. > :08:18.Three abreast. Wayde van Niekerk has gone out very quickly. Can he hold
:08:19. > :08:24.on? He has gone clear. Van Niekerk takes it. A new world record. It
:08:25. > :08:29.gives me a lot of excitement to see what lies in store for me, but I
:08:30. > :08:35.know there's a lot of responsibility to go out there and work for where I
:08:36. > :08:39.want to be. It's one thing for someone to say that we can be the
:08:40. > :08:44.next big thing, but it's another thing working for it. The thing
:08:45. > :08:49.about van Niekerk is what he brings to South Africa. He's more than a
:08:50. > :08:55.medallist and a captain. He's an inspiration. He has those qualities
:08:56. > :09:00.that make him a hero of our generation and generations come.
:09:01. > :09:06.COMMENTATOR: They are chasing down van Niekerk. The South African in
:09:07. > :09:11.front. Gold for South Africa! A stunning performance. Back in
:09:12. > :09:18.Beijing, I would have settled for a final or even a bronze, and I ended
:09:19. > :09:22.up with gold. I thought maybe reopen would be my gold medal, but it
:09:23. > :09:29.happened earlier. Then at Rio, I had to back up what I did earlier. I
:09:30. > :09:37.decided to do better what I did last year. So I decided to challenge
:09:38. > :09:40.myself in both 200 and 400. COMMENTATOR: Wayde van Niekerk is
:09:41. > :09:45.the world champion again. It may not have been the best we've seen from
:09:46. > :09:50.van Niekerk, maybe had the 200 metres in his legs from yesterday.
:09:51. > :09:57.He's just so much better than everybody else. If you put a
:09:58. > :10:05.challenge in front of him, he will go 100%, sometimes 110%. And he's
:10:06. > :10:14.got a very, very strong mindset. If he decides he wants that, he will go
:10:15. > :10:20.full out for it. I feel quite confident. My coach has shown she
:10:21. > :10:25.can make me produce at the big competitions, so I have full faith
:10:26. > :10:31.in what she has done. It's for me to go out there and lay it down on the
:10:32. > :10:36.track. He's very humble, but very confident. His aim is to go out here
:10:37. > :10:41.and set a world record. That's what he tries to do every time he gets
:10:42. > :10:49.out on the track, to be better than everyone else and improve. This is
:10:50. > :10:56.track and field. It is a dream I need to fight for. If that means I
:10:57. > :11:02.put out some great times in the 100, 200 and 400, I know I will have
:11:03. > :11:07.achieved their goals I wanted to as an athlete. I would love to reach
:11:08. > :11:15.the heights that Usain Bolt has. He turned 25 a few months ago. How big
:11:16. > :11:21.can he be? There's lots of comparisons to Usain Bolt, but you
:11:22. > :11:26.have to look at at what can text. Can he be the biggest name in this
:11:27. > :11:31.sport? Can he do what Usain Bolt did and transcend the sport, and bring
:11:32. > :11:34.people into the sport that otherwise wouldn't be watching? He will have
:11:35. > :11:39.to do something really special. You can't just be the champion and the
:11:40. > :11:44.world record holder to do that. Usain Bolt was doing things in the
:11:45. > :11:50.sport that were unprecedented, and he had a personality that was so
:11:51. > :11:54.magnetic and dynamic that it just captured people. That's not Wayde
:11:55. > :12:03.van Niekerk, and nor should he try to be that. He should be himself. He
:12:04. > :12:07.is a very humble man. He was shaking hands with all his opponents, one of
:12:08. > :12:10.whom is Danny Talbot of Great Britain. They enjoyed running next
:12:11. > :12:17.to each other in the heats, Steve Cram. They did. Very impressive by
:12:18. > :12:22.Danny Talbot. Not fazed by van Niekerk and ran a personal best.
:12:23. > :12:27.Moved up the British all-time list by a couple of notches. They were
:12:28. > :12:35.looking at each other as they crossed the line. Danny Talbot is a
:12:36. > :12:40.great bend runner. He knows this is a massive opportunity. What a
:12:41. > :12:45.semifinal this is for him. He's got van Niekerk, he's got the Olympic
:12:46. > :12:54.runs medallist, van Niekerk is attempting to do his double and win
:12:55. > :12:59.gold. Ameer Webb, the American champion. Nobody has been talking
:13:00. > :13:05.too much about him. The Americans struggling a little bit at this
:13:06. > :13:13.event. No Jamaicans will be in the final. When's the last time we saw
:13:14. > :13:20.that? The Turkish athlete will be a big danger here. Formally running
:13:21. > :13:25.for Azerbaijan. In great form. Looked very impressive in
:13:26. > :13:39.qualification and made the Olympic final. Koffi from the Ivory Coast.
:13:40. > :13:44.Pretty straightforward here. In terms of qualifying, its top two.
:13:45. > :13:49.And then Mitchell-Blake is in the qualifying position as a fastest
:13:50. > :13:55.loser at the moment. Unbelievably, you go all the way back to Yohan
:13:56. > :14:04.Blake. So you could come third here in about 20.23, or even fourth, but
:14:05. > :14:11.you would have to be inside 20.2. We will sort it out at the end. The
:14:12. > :14:12.simple thing is, come in the top two. Danny Talbot, van Niekerk,
:14:13. > :14:28.Ameer Webb,... Danny Talbot gets a very good start,
:14:29. > :14:38.and so does Ameer Webb. Lemaitre right in there.
:14:39. > :14:47.Only the top to go through. Lemaitre finishing very quickly. It's going
:14:48. > :14:48.to be Guliyev and Ameer Webb. Mitchell Webb will make the final.
:14:49. > :14:59.Who else? Coll link look at Webb on the bend,
:15:00. > :15:03.on the line, that is one thing to look out for, fatigue for van
:15:04. > :15:07.Niekerk, obviously, after last night's 400-metre final, his fifth
:15:08. > :15:12.race in five day, no speed for him today in a race that was won well
:15:13. > :15:19.outside 20 seconds. Guliyev continues to imprefs. Danny Talbot
:15:20. > :15:29.ran well but that with a tough semi. It was a tough semi. When we saw the
:15:30. > :15:33.start list. Check out how he is going round the
:15:34. > :15:38.bend. It looks fine. Once he comes in that straight he is absolutely
:15:39. > :15:43.fine, but he is still ahead, with about 50, 60 metres to go. Here
:15:44. > :15:47.comes Guliyev. We have seen him time and time and time again at
:15:48. > :15:52.Championships, come out with big performances and he has achieved
:15:53. > :15:57.that again. Taking the semifinal, with an incredible time there,
:15:58. > :16:01.20.17, and it is hammering down with rain out there, so for me, boy, that
:16:02. > :16:07.was a tough old semi, we thought that. Van Niekerk, we think is
:16:08. > :16:09.definitely qualified, along with our Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, it is good
:16:10. > :16:13.we have a British athlete in that final.
:16:14. > :16:15.Danny Talbot, I think he has done a good job. This was a tough semi for
:16:16. > :16:33.him. It has gone your way but you have
:16:34. > :16:38.had a tough few days, it has taken a lot out of you? It was tougher than
:16:39. > :16:45.I thought it would be. I knew it was going to be a big challenge. I had
:16:46. > :16:48.to dig quite deep, and, seeing my name the finals is it a real
:16:49. > :16:52.pleasure UK, I have time now to recover, and then give it my all
:16:53. > :16:55.tomorrow. For you Danny, disappointment not to make the
:16:56. > :17:03.final, cold, damp conditions not helping, what about the race itself?
:17:04. > :17:08.Yes, it is difficult, I came here to make the final, but, I ran I ran it
:17:09. > :17:13.how I wanted to but I didn't have the legs, it is something I have to
:17:14. > :17:17.work on in training and come back, it is not just one first round, I
:17:18. > :17:23.could do two or three. What is you learned most from this? I think I
:17:24. > :17:30.need toe have more self-belief, on Monday, in the heat I showed I can
:17:31. > :17:35.mix it with the guy, got a personal best, today I don't think I had the
:17:36. > :17:40.true belief in me. It is something I have to learn. I am not young, I am
:17:41. > :17:43.starting to reach my peak. I want to challenge for medals so it is
:17:44. > :17:49.something I have to work on and I will. We appreciate your time. Thank
:17:50. > :17:54.you. We are into round five of the shot
:17:55. > :18:01.put final. They have been drenched. Michelle Carter in second place.
:18:02. > :18:08.With her third round effort of 19.14, chasing Gong's lead. Just
:18:09. > :18:14.saved that I think. Gong, 19.35 the lead. A foul from
:18:15. > :18:22.Carter, just one throw remaining. Trying to stay dry. Carter can get,
:18:23. > :18:27.19.14 her best. That was a foul. Carter we know can throw well in the
:18:28. > :18:32.last round. She has done that on many occasions in the past. So to
:18:33. > :18:40.complete round five, Gong Lijao, a big shout from her. That is the best
:18:41. > :18:46.throw we have seen so far. Celebrations from the Chinese
:18:47. > :18:53.contingent. Gong celebrating but Carter does have a history of saving
:18:54. > :18:59.her best till last. She will need it if she is going to challenge this
:19:00. > :19:05.throw. 19.94. It has extended her lead. That is a big effort. She has
:19:06. > :19:10.thrown over 20 metres this year, 20.11. She is the only athlete to
:19:11. > :19:15.have done that. Gong extending her first place position.
:19:16. > :19:23.It wasn't first place for either of those two. Van Niekerk will go to
:19:24. > :19:27.the finals as the fastest loser with Mitchell-Blake. They will get lanes
:19:28. > :19:31.two and three if it goes on times Mitchell-Blake will get lane three
:19:32. > :19:40.and van Niekerk lane two. Two. What can he do in lane two in the final?
:19:41. > :19:46.The times, given the conditions, obviously may not as quick as we
:19:47. > :19:51.would have thought, there is confirmation, 21.17 with Webb. He
:19:52. > :19:55.came off the bend, the head on showed he was nowhere near the line.
:19:56. > :20:01.Let us look at the qualifiers. Richards, he is the only one who was
:20:02. > :20:04.easing down across the line. Mitchell-Blake through though, well,
:20:05. > :20:08.now that van Niekerk is on the inside in the final, we will wait
:20:09. > :20:12.for the draw. Makwala is in there, he won't get one of the better lanes
:20:13. > :20:20.because he was second. Who is the favourite there. Take your pick.
:20:21. > :20:28.No Jamaican in that 200-metre final. We have one in the studio. Omar,
:20:29. > :20:32.congratulations on your medal. We were hoping to get you with your
:20:33. > :20:35.mum. Your amazing mum and your celebrations made us smile. She is
:20:36. > :20:41.understandably, with this weather flown back to Jamaica. Yes, she has.
:20:42. > :20:48.She has got out of here. Yes, she has to lead, she had things to do
:20:49. > :20:53.back home, take care of my brothers who had to go back to school. She
:20:54. > :20:59.wanted to stay until the weekend but she had to go home. You are part of
:21:00. > :21:03.the squad for the relay? . I am. I have relay practise tomorrow. How
:21:04. > :21:08.delighted are you to be the Olympic and World Champion, it must be an
:21:09. > :21:14.incredible feeling? It is. I haven't come to terms as yet, but overall I
:21:15. > :21:18.am feeling great. What I did, I know it was exceptional, historic and
:21:19. > :21:25.like said, didn't just do it for me. I wanted to bring the spark back in
:21:26. > :21:28.the Jamaica camp, especially after what happened to Usain Bolt and
:21:29. > :21:32.Elaine Thompson. I took it on myself to change that, I wanted to change
:21:33. > :21:39.it, and I think I did that, I am happy. It must be an unusual feeling
:21:40. > :21:45.in the Jamaican camp! Camp! Trust me, it was. I think Jamaica, we are
:21:46. > :21:48.proud with the gold medals and I remember last year when Usain Bolt
:21:49. > :21:53.won and Elaine won, I used that to propel me for my race, didn't have
:21:54. > :21:57.that, so it was OK, I need to shine my own light here. So I had to go do
:21:58. > :22:01.it. And it was very impressive. Shall we have another look at your
:22:02. > :22:08.race. Yes, thank you. Nothing is ever certain in a high
:22:09. > :22:15.hurdles final. They Not at all. What I noticed. Some times in the Diamond
:22:16. > :22:19.League you can clatter them, this for me, was completely a clean race,
:22:20. > :22:24.at least you didn't hit anything, it was just, majestic. Yes, at a major
:22:25. > :22:28.Championship, the winner always boils down to who has the cleanest
:22:29. > :22:34.race. Every Championship it boils down to that. I knew I had to get
:22:35. > :22:43.out, do it my way and take it. There goes mummy.
:22:44. > :22:48.It is so lovely. Thank you so much. I was so tired.
:22:49. > :22:52.But I knew I had to take control of the race, I had to fete the start
:22:53. > :22:57.and lead from the start to finish. I am glad I could do that. There talk
:22:58. > :23:02.of you having an experiment with the distances, is that right? Yes, 200
:23:03. > :23:09.is my favourite. I Riley like the 200. A lot of people don't know
:23:10. > :23:18.that. There is a void now! Warren just retired today. We need a
:23:19. > :23:26.Jamaican 200 runner. Why not experiment? I want to be historic. I
:23:27. > :23:30.am not just about hurdles. I did the four hurdles in high school. I
:23:31. > :23:35.really hate the event but I can do it. I really hate it. Let us see
:23:36. > :23:42.what the future has in store for me. You have a couple of dogs at home. I
:23:43. > :23:47.do. You are probably missing them I have a Border Collie and a shih tzu.
:23:48. > :23:59.Stay with us, we will get back out for more field action.
:24:00. > :24:08.We are in the last round of the shot put final. Anita Marton. Currently
:24:09. > :24:19.in fourth position. The row they for. Big throw. Well, look at this.
:24:20. > :24:27.What a put in the final stages. It has almost been a wash out but Anita
:24:28. > :24:36.Marton in the last round. She has a best so far of 18.89. The lead is
:24:37. > :24:41.Gong. 19 metres... 19.49. Goes into second place, ahead of Carter. What
:24:42. > :24:52.a throw for Marton. Silver medal position as we stand. She has pushed
:24:53. > :24:57.Carter into the bronze medal position. Carter's best so far
:24:58. > :25:02.19.14. So then, can she do what he did last year in the Olympics and
:25:03. > :25:07.save her best for the final round. Composes herself. At the back of the
:25:08. > :25:10.circle. Left side came away again there.
:25:11. > :25:23.I don't think it is enough. It won't be. She knows it. Michelle Carter,
:25:24. > :25:27.the Olympic champion. Threw season's best here this evening, but it don't
:25:28. > :25:31.look like it is going to be enough. Under 19 metres.
:25:32. > :25:35.Just lost that, you can see she lost connection with the spot there. It
:25:36. > :25:45.is not surprising, look at the rain coming down. Carter, 18.97. Getting
:25:46. > :25:50.bronze, so Marton takes is till very, that confirmed Gong Lijao of
:25:51. > :25:54.China, is the gold-medallist. She will have one more effort in the
:25:55. > :25:59.knowledge that she is the champion. I don't think it has hit her yet.
:26:00. > :26:04.She was fourth five years ago in the Olympics. Didn't celebrate that
:26:05. > :26:06.rostrum finish she was eventually awarded with the disqualification,
:26:07. > :26:13.this is her last round. Look at that! Nearly 20-metre, I was saying
:26:14. > :26:17.she was fourth in the 2012 Olympics, she has since then because of
:26:18. > :26:23.disqualifications been awarded a silver medal. So, never took the
:26:24. > :26:31.rostrum here, and the World Championships, five years on, it is
:26:32. > :26:37.Gong Lijao of China. 19.89. She is champion of the world.
:26:38. > :26:45.You feel for them because it has been tough in these condition, but
:26:46. > :26:50.it is not so tough if you want do do a bit of inflatable sliding. It is
:26:51. > :26:55.perfect for that. That should have been me out there. That looks fun. I
:26:56. > :27:00.want to ask you about your gospel singing, is it true you have a
:27:01. > :27:05.really high note? Who told you that? I done my homework. Yes, I do a bit
:27:06. > :27:10.of singing but I'm not going to do any singing. I was hoping you might
:27:11. > :27:15.sing! So, you have said about wanting to mix it up and see whether
:27:16. > :27:20.you can do the 100, you love the 200, what about the world record, is
:27:21. > :27:26.that in your sights? Yes, definitely for sure, I have won him tick title,
:27:27. > :27:31.the world title. Why not go for the world record. I am still young. I am
:27:32. > :27:36.excited about the future with hurdling wise. Will we see you at
:27:37. > :27:41.the Commonwealth Games, that is another big event? Yes, Is that on
:27:42. > :27:50.your radar, which event will it be do? I think I want to do the
:27:51. > :27:54.sprints. These are the men in the 400-metre hurdles final. Do you like
:27:55. > :28:00.this It is good for the sport. I really like that. Did you have a
:28:01. > :28:06.signature move when you came out? I did a little funky dance. It was
:28:07. > :28:12.great. I lose myself sometimes and then I did the mind thingy. Nice!
:28:13. > :28:16.Mowatt from Jamaica of course, but you are targeting this event so he
:28:17. > :28:23.will watch out for you coming? Yes. For sure.
:28:24. > :28:26.Look at that guy in the glass, You don't need those in England in the
:28:27. > :28:33.rain. Maybe it is a superstition. Right. The field now taking to the
:28:34. > :28:38.track in these condition, not easy, Denise, is it for any of the track
:28:39. > :28:42.athletes. It is not, but this is part of athletic, you have to deal
:28:43. > :28:48.with it. You have to get your mind in the right frame. These guys are
:28:49. > :28:53.used to it so it is about staying focussed, composed and executing
:28:54. > :28:57.your race really well. Once you get in it. It is tough
:28:58. > :29:01.getting the approach when you are going out to the track. Having to
:29:02. > :29:06.warm up in the rain, get on the ground, in the rain, I am going to
:29:07. > :29:10.have to, you know, deal with all of the water in my eye, once you get in
:29:11. > :29:14.it you block all those things out and you get on with it, and it is
:29:15. > :29:19.warming up and preparing like any other race, but it is once you get
:29:20. > :29:24.in there, you, why does it have to be raining? It is just a bit of a
:29:25. > :29:32.downer, once you get in it you you are good. But you would rather be
:29:33. > :29:39.running in the heat, Omar. Yes. Hopefully it will be if you get
:29:40. > :29:43.involved in that relay. Take your good fortune forward into the
:29:44. > :29:49.Jamaican squad. Thank you for having me. Let us get back outside for that
:29:50. > :29:56.rainy 400-metre hurdle final with Andrew Cotter and Colin Jackson. Let
:29:57. > :30:00.him get back to his Border Collie. The rain is still, it is getting
:30:01. > :30:05.heavier if anything. Some of these Fleetwoods are in the wet, it is a
:30:06. > :30:14.good lane to have lane nine. Hussein is in the outside and it is pretty
:30:15. > :30:18.dry. -- athletes. Since then they have flooded again.
:30:19. > :30:26.This event lost the quickest in the world at the very first stage. He
:30:27. > :30:33.was disqualified for running out of his lane. The USA still with two
:30:34. > :30:40.challengers one the Olympic champion Kerron Clement. Do Norway have a
:30:41. > :30:46.hope of gold for Warholm. He will bury himself in the first 200. He is
:30:47. > :30:51.from the west coast of Norway, he is not unfamiliar with this type of
:30:52. > :30:56.weather. But he runs hard, over the first stages of the race and the way
:30:57. > :31:00.Clement and TJ homes they tend to come back. Like Mowatt and Samba.
:31:01. > :31:11.This might be a fascinating race. Kerron Clement, the Olympic
:31:12. > :31:19.champion, who has won this title twice before, in 2007 in Osaka and
:31:20. > :31:27.2009 in Berlin. He is the old man of the line-up, at 31. It's such a
:31:28. > :31:34.brutal event as well, and takes its toll on your body. It is. They
:31:35. > :31:39.called this the man killer. That is its nickname, the 400 metre hurdles.
:31:40. > :31:44.The technical side of it, the speed and endurance side of it. A lot of
:31:45. > :31:52.hard work to get these guys to the final. Looking at the list, it's
:31:53. > :31:57.hard to call. You set it up beautifully, because you did list
:31:58. > :32:00.the people who are going to be heading out early, very aggressive
:32:01. > :32:06.over the first eight hurdles. Then with Kerron Clement flooring them
:32:07. > :32:11.all back. That's what we expect to happen, but will it be enough? Don't
:32:12. > :32:17.forget Warholm as well. Very talented. It's going to be excited.
:32:18. > :32:31.Santos on the outside as well. All the finalist in the men's 400
:32:32. > :32:37.metres hurdles, let's meet them. Hussain, we mentioned him on the
:32:38. > :32:43.outside, who was roared home from his home crowd in Zurich three years
:32:44. > :32:49.ago to win the title. One the Diamond League as well. He's got a
:32:50. > :33:04.chance here. Copello, runs for Turkey now, European champion. TJ
:33:05. > :33:16.Holmes. I do not know where the letter J comes from. Won his heat,
:33:17. > :33:22.won his semifinal. Samba of Fatah. Don't know if he's going to run in
:33:23. > :33:28.the cap and shades. Originally from Mauritania, 21 years old. And this
:33:29. > :33:37.man, Norway's rising star, who will whip himself up into a frenzy. He's
:33:38. > :33:42.all energy and noise. Norway dreaming of their first medal, their
:33:43. > :33:52.first gold. And Kerron Clement, the Olympic champion. He'd just got
:33:53. > :34:00.Karsten Warholm on the line in the semifinal. Both were gumming pretty
:34:01. > :34:05.full out. Kemar Mowatt, runs on the US circuit, at university in
:34:06. > :34:15.Arkansas. Tends to finish strongly. And Juander Santos. His older
:34:16. > :34:19.brother took silver here in 2012. A pretty wretched lane to have on the
:34:20. > :34:26.inside anyway in the hurdles, because it's a bit tighter, but
:34:27. > :34:35.tonight it's wetter as well. Samba of cat are is going to run in the
:34:36. > :34:41.baseball cap. That is a bit of a first, but keeping the rain out of
:34:42. > :34:45.his eyes. I suppose there's a thinking behind it. Juander Santos
:34:46. > :34:59.of the Dominican Republic in lane two. Mowatt, Clement, Warholm,
:35:00. > :35:00.Samba, Holmes, Copello and Hussain, the final of the men's 400 metre
:35:01. > :35:15.hurdles. How fast will Karsten Warholm go in
:35:16. > :35:22.lane five? Look at him powering through the rain and powering over
:35:23. > :35:26.the bend. TJ Holmes being swallowed up by Warholm. He is digging in.
:35:27. > :35:34.We'll have to find something in the home straight. Copello is going
:35:35. > :35:39.well. Warholm in front at the moment, but Clement making a move.
:35:40. > :35:47.TJ Holmes a long way back. Has Warholm spent too much? He's a long
:35:48. > :35:48.way clear but there is a long way to go. Clement chasing him down.
:35:49. > :36:03.Warholm hanging on. Warholm takes it from Clement and
:36:04. > :36:08.Copello. Karsten Warholm, his face says it all. He is the world
:36:09. > :36:16.champion and has Norway's first gold. Clement couldn't get there.
:36:17. > :36:22.Karsten Warholm with a time, 48.35. In these conditions, what a run that
:36:23. > :36:27.is to take the world title. Tricky conditions, but what they run by
:36:28. > :36:32.this young man. Incredible. Committed from the beginning. He
:36:33. > :36:38.decided he was going to take it out, and they would have to run him down
:36:39. > :36:43.to take the title. Put himself in an excellent position. He has hung on
:36:44. > :36:49.before. People know what he's capable of. I think it was a risky
:36:50. > :36:54.business to let him get off to that kind of start without challenging
:36:55. > :36:59.him a bit earlier. No event has a more fascinating event than the 400
:37:00. > :37:07.metres hurdles, and Samba knows that. He died a death in the last
:37:08. > :37:13.200 metres. This year, Warholm has just been concentrating on the
:37:14. > :37:18.hurdles and has left all other events behind. The Norwegian fans
:37:19. > :37:23.can celebrate. You can see the power that Warholm has. Some thought
:37:24. > :37:27.Clement was going to get there, but not this time. We have seen Clement
:37:28. > :37:33.leaves bigger gaps than that before and managed to come through to take
:37:34. > :37:41.the title. But not on this occasion. Look at that young man. He is
:37:42. > :37:46.enjoying that now, isn't he? It will be interesting to see him on the lap
:37:47. > :37:52.of honour. Let's look at this again. He was out so quickly, moving up on
:37:53. > :37:59.Samba by the first barrier, who had a good race himself in the latter
:38:00. > :38:05.stages. He committed himself early, and has a gap with Clement early.
:38:06. > :38:08.The key is keeping your stride pattern but increasing your
:38:09. > :38:14.frequency. Get more turnover but keep your stride the same. As you
:38:15. > :38:19.start to open up that stride length, it gets more comfortable. At this
:38:20. > :38:24.stage, he will have no problems, because the fatigue will not have
:38:25. > :38:31.set in. When he can see the finish and not feel anybody around him, he
:38:32. > :38:35.has to think, hold on in there. Samba started to rock and roll
:38:36. > :38:45.there. Hit the barrier, and that was his race done. Clement, and Copello,
:38:46. > :38:50.couldn't get there. Really good to see this. An impressive performance
:38:51. > :38:53.from this young man. When he won the Diamond League in Oslo, when he
:38:54. > :39:02.thought he was good, but now he's come to London and shown he can take
:39:03. > :39:07.on the best in the world, perform at an event like this, and beat them.
:39:08. > :39:16.When you lose your leg at the 400 metre hurdles you are gone, and
:39:17. > :39:21.Samba drags across the line. Copello on the outside was keeping his form
:39:22. > :39:28.well. We thought Warholm was going to fade, but he had more than enough
:39:29. > :39:33.to stay clear of Copello and Clement and take victory. Norway's first
:39:34. > :39:39.told. Don't know if he thought it was a bit closer than that. Looking
:39:40. > :39:51.up for confirmation. Realisation that you are the world champion.
:39:52. > :39:55.Actually terrifying. He is the 400 hurdles champion, beating the
:39:56. > :40:04.Olympic champion in the process. Norway can celebrate. They will
:40:05. > :40:09.celebrate for a long time. So the result of the men's 400 metre
:40:10. > :40:24.hurdles. It's been pointed out to me that that is Norway's track gold
:40:25. > :40:29.since 1987. Warholm, the gold. Bronze for the Olympic champion,
:40:30. > :40:34.Clement. STUDIO: Karsten Warholm, former
:40:35. > :40:38.decathlete, former European decathlete champion. Made the
:40:39. > :40:44.transition to the 400 metres hurdles. An incredible successful
:40:45. > :40:49.one so young, and to start the event so late. Starting the event late,
:40:50. > :40:54.but I save time and time again, combined events is a great platform
:40:55. > :40:58.for any athlete to launch themselves. There are a few
:40:59. > :41:05.heptathlete and decathlete who have gone on to do single events. I'd
:41:06. > :41:10.like to know how many there are. We have a statistical team! What a
:41:11. > :41:17.fantastic, commanding performance. And another nation on the board in
:41:18. > :41:23.these truly wide-ranging World Championships. We have seen Chinese
:41:24. > :41:28.take the gold in the shot put, which is China's first gold. What a
:41:29. > :41:37.fantastic achievement for one so young, from Norway. He did run the
:41:38. > :41:43.perfect race, but still, you've got the Olympic champion in there. It
:41:44. > :41:48.says everything. It's just a reaction. Terrifyingly beautiful.
:41:49. > :41:54.It's everything that's beyond his wildest dream. But he did it tonight
:41:55. > :42:02.in those conditions. Wonderful, wonderful scenes. Norwegian could,
:42:03. > :42:11.Norwegian Wood. And he did. Next up, a single lap on the track, but there
:42:12. > :42:17.are no hurdles. The women's 400 metre final coming up, when those
:42:18. > :42:23.Viking hats have had enough. Going to join Michael now in the homework
:42:24. > :42:32.corner. Shaunae Miller-Uibo and Allyson Phillips had that amazing
:42:33. > :42:40.duel in the Olympic final. Felix is the world champion from 2015. Is it
:42:41. > :42:45.all about these two? Primarily, yes. Both are 200 metres specialists. We
:42:46. > :42:51.have known Allyson Felix better as a 200 metre runner over the years.
:42:52. > :42:55.Let's have a look at Shaunae Miller-Uibo in her semifinal. We can
:42:56. > :43:04.compare and contrast Miller-Uibo and Felix. Miller-Uibo runs the race in
:43:05. > :43:08.an even pace and stride frequency all the way around the track. She
:43:09. > :43:15.doesn't really get out hard and then take that break. She is very evenly
:43:16. > :43:22.paced, which really works for her with that long stride she has. A
:43:23. > :43:29.very tall, rangy athlete. No real movement. Running the same pace,
:43:30. > :43:35.same technique, same stride. Positions herself perfectly here in
:43:36. > :43:39.the semifinal, and is able to ease home, already relaxing in her
:43:40. > :43:45.semifinal. She will have a lot left in her tank from the semifinal a
:43:46. > :43:55.couple of days ago, so will be quite fresh for her final tonight. Looking
:43:56. > :43:59.at Allyson Felix in contrast. In her semifinal, she runs a little bit
:44:00. > :44:03.different. Comes from a 200 metres specialist background, and Olympic
:44:04. > :44:08.and world champion at 200 metres. Get out hard. Starts to relax a bit
:44:09. > :44:14.down the back stretch. Nice, long stride. She is not as tall as
:44:15. > :44:20.Miller-Uibo, but she has really long legs. Short torso, long legs. She
:44:21. > :44:33.starts to take a bit of a break there, as a 200 metres specialist,
:44:34. > :44:35.not having the endurance that Miller-Uibo has. Then starts to
:44:36. > :44:39.really push coming home. Because she is in the semifinal, she starts to
:44:40. > :44:45.relax, and relaxes too much. Then you see Naser coming up, and Felix
:44:46. > :44:50.notices her as well. That was a different way to qualify and took a
:44:51. > :44:57.bit more out of her, but the two of them run differently, so we have two
:44:58. > :45:02.different approaches. The athlete we saw there, Naser, only 18 from
:45:03. > :45:08.Bahrain. She has run personal bests every round in this championship, so
:45:09. > :45:15.she has potential for a medal as well. Could she be an interloper?
:45:16. > :45:19.She is very young, only 18. But she has acquitted herself very well
:45:20. > :45:24.here. Doesn't have championship experience. You have to ask how long
:45:25. > :45:32.that will last, those personal bests. In terms of reading the race,
:45:33. > :45:36.what you said about the two contrasting styles of Miller-Uibo
:45:37. > :45:43.day and Felix, at what part of the race can you tell who has the
:45:44. > :45:52.advantage? Once they get around 250, you will start to see... The only
:45:53. > :45:57.problem, in lanes two and seven, they are quite far apart. When they
:45:58. > :46:01.get 250 metres into the race, we will see who has the advantage. It
:46:02. > :46:09.should play very well down the home stretch. This will be a fantastic
:46:10. > :46:12.race. We saw an amazing finish last year with Miller-Uibo diving across
:46:13. > :46:19.the finish line to take the gold medal. We could see another tonight.
:46:20. > :46:23.Let's get outside, because they are coming out, making that spectacular
:46:24. > :46:30.showbiz entrance they do. The final event of the night, the women's 400
:46:31. > :46:36.metre final. Is it going to be a straightforward battle for gold and
:46:37. > :46:37.silver with Miller-Uibo and Allyson Felix, or will there be a surprise
:46:38. > :46:46.here? I think it is down to those two.
:46:47. > :46:48.Allyson Felix has been specific with her preparation for these
:46:49. > :46:53.Championships she hasn't raced too much. She had that ankle injury last
:46:54. > :47:00.year, there was a slight delay. She wants it. She was upset she was
:47:01. > :47:05.beaten last year, I think the experience, the hunger, is going to
:47:06. > :47:12.see her through. She is one of the most popular female athletes I think
:47:13. > :47:17.for an age. She is so popular. Very popular, one of the top medallists
:47:18. > :47:23.at the Championships over the history, I think she is the third
:47:24. > :47:28.ranked in terms of most medals. I talked to her, she is soft spoken
:47:29. > :47:33.but she really perked up when we started talking about this and how
:47:34. > :47:38.much she wants a World Championship at 400 metres. She has nine World
:47:39. > :47:42.Championship medals Allyson Felix, nine gold, she wants the tenth, is
:47:43. > :47:47.today her day? Steve Cram is calling this one.
:47:48. > :47:54.Her superb career as a 200-metre runner, when she moved up to four,
:47:55. > :48:04.looked at attempting the double. I say only she has won that 400-metre
:48:05. > :48:08.title and pipped last year by just seven hundredth of a seconds by
:48:09. > :48:12.Shaunae Miller-Uibo. She hasn't won a world title at 400-metre, this
:48:13. > :48:16.would be her first at this distance. Shaunae Miller-Uibo. She is
:48:17. > :48:20.attempting to become the first to win a double at the World
:48:21. > :48:27.Championship, the 200 and 400. Both on their own quest, because she has
:48:28. > :48:32.had to run a round of the 200 already, Shaunae Miller-Uibo, she
:48:33. > :48:38.had that extra race but she has looked to me, supremely confident,
:48:39. > :48:43.and, the one to beat for me. So Shericka Jackson on the inside for
:48:44. > :48:46.Jamaica, then the veteran 35-year-old Novlene Williams-Mills,
:48:47. > :48:54.of Jamaica, she was in the final in 2007, when just pipped by Christine
:48:55. > :49:00.Ohuruogu, be mind me with -- behind me with our radio colleagues.
:49:01. > :49:05.Phyllis Francis in six. Shaunae Miller-Uibo, Mcpherson and then in
:49:06. > :49:11.the lane nine Mupopo of Zambia. The African champion from last year,
:49:12. > :49:15.has got a new personal best of 200. She may go hard. Mcpherson will
:49:16. > :49:21.chase her home. The bronze-medallist from 2012. She received that in a
:49:22. > :49:25.ceremony at the beginning of the Championships because of a drug
:49:26. > :49:32.disqualification. At the age of 16 she won the world junior title. The
:49:33. > :49:39.world youth the year after. Here she is heading for her second global
:49:40. > :49:46.gold medal for her. Phyllis Francis of the US UK, fifth in that final in
:49:47. > :49:58.Rio last year. She is the defending champion, Allyson Felix. Semifinal
:49:59. > :50:07.defeat but can she take this world title again? Naser. Such a talent.
:50:08. > :50:10.Charging down the home straight in that semifinal. Two national
:50:11. > :50:17.records. Already at these Championships.
:50:18. > :50:24.I said that race in 2007, she almost had it won, didn't she. With 15
:50:25. > :50:37.metres to go, then, Christine Ohuruogu snatched it away. Shericka
:50:38. > :50:40.Jackson. Two bronze medals in the last two global finals. This time
:50:41. > :50:47.for her it will be tough on the inside. But she has been close to 50
:50:48. > :50:56.seconds this year. So the women's 400-metre final, the
:50:57. > :51:05.three medallists from Rio. Shaunae Miller-Uibo the favourite. Naser,
:51:06. > :51:22.the new youngster, can she get among it in lane four?
:51:23. > :51:28.Shaunae Miller-Uibo started quickly in seven. Felix will be aware of
:51:29. > :51:34.that and will try and hang on to her in the back straight. Also started
:51:35. > :51:36.quickly is Mupopo of Zambia. Felix is on terms with Shaunae
:51:37. > :51:46.Miller-Uibo. Naser is is a long way behind at the moment in the red of
:51:47. > :51:49.Bahrain. Through 200 metres. Metres. Look at Shaunae Miller-Uibo.
:51:50. > :51:54.Stretching round that top bend. Taking the advantage. Francis coming
:51:55. > :51:58.back, Naser will finish quickly, Jackson on the inside. But it's the
:51:59. > :52:04.Olympic champion, striding away at the moment, can she last this out.
:52:05. > :52:07.Francis is finishing very quickly. Felix could be out the medals.
:52:08. > :52:13.Shaunae Miller-Uibo has pulled. Francis is going to take it. Naser
:52:14. > :52:21.gets the silver. Well I don't think she pulled a
:52:22. > :52:25.muscle but she completely collapsed. I have never seen anybody of that
:52:26. > :52:38.stature chur and that ability in a 400-metre final, with just 20 metres
:52:39. > :52:43.to go, completely fall apart. What a turn up. Incredible Phyllis Francis
:52:44. > :52:47.is the World Championship and a new personal best. Naser came through
:52:48. > :52:52.for the silver, just ahead of Felix, who I thought wasn't going to get a
:52:53. > :52:57.medal 25 metres from the line. They are all looking at the board,
:52:58. > :53:01.they are all looking at the screen, trying to wonder what happened
:53:02. > :53:04.there, and I have never seen a more subdued World Champion. She can't
:53:05. > :53:08.believe it. Have you ever seen anything like that? I have never
:53:09. > :53:12.seen anything like that, she is running great at this point, as we
:53:13. > :53:18.expected. Down the back stretch this is shaping up at this point to be a
:53:19. > :53:24.fantastic race. Allyson Felix is giving chase, she has her eye on
:53:25. > :53:28.her, and at 200, Shaunae Miller-Uibo had a slight lead but it would seem
:53:29. > :53:32.that Allyson Felix has the advantage being on two lanes on the inside,
:53:33. > :53:36.but, at this point I felt Shaunae Miller-Uibo doesn't look like she is
:53:37. > :53:41.going to come back, you wonder if he has gone out too hard. She looks
:53:42. > :53:44.strong, you feel she is not coming back, she is Saturdaying to pull
:53:45. > :53:48.away. Allyson Felix on the right side is starting to fade. You see
:53:49. > :53:53.Francis coming up on the inside with a storm and the young 18-year-old
:53:54. > :53:58.Naser coming up as well. There is a, that is either a hamstring, or a
:53:59. > :54:02.strain of some muscle, maybe just a cramp that pulled and let go, when
:54:03. > :54:06.an athlete buckles like that and hops up in the air, that means that
:54:07. > :54:11.one muscle went, you feel it, and you hop up in the air, to try to
:54:12. > :54:16.relieve the pressure, as opposed to continuing the stride. Let us just
:54:17. > :54:20.watch this again. Everything looks fantastic at this point. She is on
:54:21. > :54:25.her way home, no issues. Just continued this. Through to the
:54:26. > :54:30.finish line and you are good but there it starts to go. Right. There,
:54:31. > :54:37.it starts to go. That is a hamstring or something, it is obviously not a
:54:38. > :54:41.major pull or grade through strain because you wouldn't be able to
:54:42. > :54:45.continue running. It will be best interesting to air what happened you
:54:46. > :54:50.can't take away anything from Francis in the middle. She has been
:54:51. > :54:54.running great this year and took advantage of the issue with Shaunae
:54:55. > :54:59.Miller-Uibo but took advantage and took over Allyson Felix who we
:55:00. > :55:03.expected to be first or second in this race, but, was never going to
:55:04. > :55:11.catch Miller until that happened. You see the strain, you see at that
:55:12. > :55:15.point... That is just, I mean, you don't know exactly what it was at
:55:16. > :55:18.that point, but there was something that happened with Shaunae
:55:19. > :55:21.Miller-Uibo but Francis is now the World Champion and I am sure that
:55:22. > :55:27.Allyson Felix will be disappointed in her performance.
:55:28. > :55:32.If you had said to Allyson Felix, your team-mate is going to finish
:55:33. > :55:36.ahead of you, and, Miller won't be in the top three, she would have
:55:37. > :55:38.givendown of those Miller-Uibo but Francis is now the World Champion
:55:39. > :55:39.and I am sure that Allyson Felix will be disappointed in her
:55:40. > :55:42.performance. If you had said to Allyson Felix,
:55:43. > :55:45.your team-mate is going to finish ahead of you, and, Miller won't be
:55:46. > :55:48.in the top three, she would have givendown of those looks, that would
:55:49. > :55:50.have said "You have to be kidding me.". I think, maybe she has
:55:51. > :55:52.overcooked that bit. Michael will know better. This would never have
:55:53. > :55:55.happened to Michael. At this point, you know, that whole, I have nothing
:55:56. > :55:58.left, she is locking at the screen, her foot drags there and that drag,
:55:59. > :56:01.you know, she can't pick her knees up. When you do that you lose that
:56:02. > :56:04.momentum, she manages to keep it going, whether it was something
:56:05. > :56:08.caused that or whether it was utter fatigue, you are trying to keep
:56:09. > :56:13.driving to the line and just wasn't able to, when she dragged her foot,
:56:14. > :56:21.and lost all that momentum, the little bit of momentum she had left,
:56:22. > :56:25.not much. But you cannot fault Phyllis Francis. Watch her focus
:56:26. > :56:29.here, she doesn't know anything else but focussing ahead, doesn't matter
:56:30. > :56:35.what is going on around her, she knows she is passing Felix, thinking
:56:36. > :56:38.I have a medal. All a sudden smaun smaun -- Shaunae Miller-Uibo goes
:56:39. > :56:45.and she is in the front. It happens so quickly, and the last 20 metres
:56:46. > :56:50.but she is the World Champion. Gold for America, but not to whom we
:56:51. > :56:55.might have thought, had Shaunae Miller-Uibo faltered. She did, big
:56:56. > :57:02.style. Didn't get a medal. Allyson Felix gets the bronze. Awe new
:57:03. > :57:09.national record for Naser, the teenager getting on the rostrum and
:57:10. > :57:15.Phyllis Francis is the new champion and a new personal best. What an
:57:16. > :57:18.extraordinary race. We could have salt there and thought about perm
:57:19. > :57:22.theys for two days and we would not have come up with the way that
:57:23. > :57:29.finished. I have no idea what happened. As I look at the replay,
:57:30. > :57:33.typically, if an athlete is starting to fatigue that the point, you would
:57:34. > :57:37.see fatigue. We didn't see any fatigue and she would have kept
:57:38. > :57:42.doing what she is doing, but, I don't know if she tripped over her
:57:43. > :57:47.own foot, and I don't know how do you that, I just don't know how that
:57:48. > :57:55.would have happened. Would she caught her toe? I wonder whether it
:57:56. > :58:00.is the cap accept that cramps. You can't lift your knee up if that
:58:01. > :58:05.happened. That may be why she released. If it was the ham string
:58:06. > :58:10.you are down on the ground. That is true, you might have a point there.
:58:11. > :58:15.The only reason that I wonder about that, Denise, is because she looked
:58:16. > :58:17.like, herself, like what happened. I don't know what happened. She
:58:18. > :58:23.doesn't look like she understands what happens. You can see it's the
:58:24. > :58:28.left leg causing the problem. Something happened there and she was
:58:29. > :58:34.uncomfortable. It was very shocking right. It was bizarre. Five metres
:58:35. > :58:42.from the finish line. She had it won, but amazing what we have got
:58:43. > :58:48.here, is a 18-year-old World Championship silver mid list, who
:58:49. > :58:52.ran a fantastic series of races, throughout this Championship, to get
:58:53. > :58:56.herself in silver medal position for Bahrain, Nateser. The world youth
:58:57. > :59:02.champion so she has been at the top of her game and shown that potential
:59:03. > :59:06.for a while but at 18, we talk about the young athletes getting
:59:07. > :59:11.experiences, she didn't need that. She came to her first major and has
:59:12. > :59:16.delivered. There Francis has done one better, she has taken the bold.
:59:17. > :59:20.As you said she has -- gold, you would never have suspected she would
:59:21. > :59:24.have finished the top of the pile with Shaunae Miller-Uibo down in
:59:25. > :59:31.fourth. We would never have suggested that. I would hope Francis
:59:32. > :59:36.was hoping she would win. She needed to do what she did. You can't take
:59:37. > :59:41.anything away from her. She ran a personal best. A personal best to
:59:42. > :59:47.win this. You can't take anything away from her h took advantage of
:59:48. > :59:52.the issue with Shaunae Miller-Uibo, she beat Allyson Felix straight up,
:59:53. > :59:57.fair and square, and Alison did not have a great race there. She was
:59:58. > :00:02.fifth in Rio, he is a gold-medallist in the relay team of course, great
:00:03. > :00:07.big time experience she she has had. She has had a lot of experience.
:00:08. > :00:11.Sometimes you have an athlete with the calibre of Felix and you can
:00:12. > :00:16.decide this race is her, but she ran her race, she was strong, she was
:00:17. > :00:27.confident, personal best, it is a great run for her, really well done.
:00:28. > :00:34.Let's have a little look at what that has done. I'm so pleased,
:00:35. > :00:41.because the USA really needed another medal! I'm so glad that they
:00:42. > :00:50.have added to their tally. Did you predict that for the US? 28th. We
:00:51. > :00:56.are getting close, moving all the time. It was so nearly the first
:00:57. > :01:03.gold, for the Bahamas, but not to be. We saw Norway get their first
:01:04. > :01:09.goals, and China as well. First gold in the shot put. What a spread of
:01:10. > :01:20.nations. And the Bahraini athlete getting the silver. That's on there.
:01:21. > :01:28.A silver and a gold for Bahrain. Shall we go over to the touch screen
:01:29. > :01:34.and one final piece of analysis? Let's take a look at this 400 metre
:01:35. > :01:40.final again. It was quite bizarre. We knew this was going to be a
:01:41. > :01:46.fantastic race, just didn't expect to end it the way it did. Felix in
:01:47. > :01:50.the middle of the track gets out quick. We knew that would happen.
:01:51. > :01:57.Miller-Uibo got out a little bit quicker than I expected. I think
:01:58. > :02:02.that shocked Allyson Felix a little bit, maybe that was a bit of
:02:03. > :02:07.strategy. She may not have been expecting Miller-Uibo to run that
:02:08. > :02:13.quick, and what could have happened to Allyson Felix is, having that
:02:14. > :02:18.unexpected pace from Miller-Uibo, Allyson Felix made it a bit tighter
:02:19. > :02:24.giving chase. Miller-Uibo is in a perfect position to win this race. I
:02:25. > :02:32.expected higher at this moment to cross the finish line first. There
:02:33. > :02:37.it is again. Just a trip. We do know that her foot did actually
:02:38. > :02:43.tripped... She did have the spike off of that right foot. See this?
:02:44. > :02:50.The left foot actually hit the track? That would never happen. You
:02:51. > :02:55.would never hit the track with your toe when you are sprinting, because
:02:56. > :03:02.you have your foot up. So maybe something happened with her quad. We
:03:03. > :03:07.see her start to grimace there before she actually tripped with the
:03:08. > :03:11.left foot. She started to grimace, which would indicate that something
:03:12. > :03:17.went wrong and she felt pain somewhere. I think it may be exactly
:03:18. > :03:22.what Denise indicated, which was cramp in the quadricep, which would
:03:23. > :03:28.cause your toe to go down, and as you auto hits the track, she pops
:03:29. > :03:35.up, and then she is feeling the pain and cannot recover. The most
:03:36. > :03:40.terrible, terrible timing for poor Shaunae Miller-Uibo. Thank you,
:03:41. > :03:45.Michael, as always. We will bring you more on that as we hear it.
:03:46. > :03:50.Denise, thank you very much. We are going to have lots of hot chocolate
:03:51. > :03:56.and get warm. First, let's remind you of the action coming your way
:03:57. > :04:02.tomorrow. We will be on BBC Two from 6am. More action to come tomorrow
:04:03. > :04:09.night, including captain Eilidh Doyle going in the 400 metres
:04:10. > :04:14.hurdles. And that wonderful triple jump final. The temperature is
:04:15. > :04:20.supposed to be a lot warmer and not raining tomorrow. Will Christian
:04:21. > :04:25.Taylor you're finally propel himself towards Jonathan Edwards' world
:04:26. > :04:30.record? If he wins by two centimetres, like in the women's, it
:04:31. > :04:38.definitely will be. We are off for hot chocolate. Where are you? We are
:04:39. > :04:45.waiting for you to bring the hot chocolate over to us. The team are
:04:46. > :04:50.here. Tony is showing he is a hard and individual. Colin and I, we
:04:51. > :04:56.don't care, just as long as we are warm. We are wearing the coats.
:04:57. > :05:06.There are a few hard-core fans waiting with us here. All seven of
:05:07. > :05:12.them making a noise. That's fine. That's my family! The rest of them
:05:13. > :05:17.couldn't get home more quickly. Let's talk about long jump first.
:05:18. > :05:27.Starting with a British qualifier in the final, Lorraine Ugen. Superb,
:05:28. > :05:33.really. Took all three jumps, though probably didn't need to. Here we see
:05:34. > :05:38.her on film. It was so wet out there. Difficult for them. If you
:05:39. > :05:43.could dream up conditions, this would be right up there. Let me make
:05:44. > :05:49.it difficult for you to qualify. I will run you into a headwind, with
:05:50. > :05:53.the rain and the cold. The celebration into the board, but job
:05:54. > :06:03.done, Lorraine. -- the celebration into the board. Does she have the
:06:04. > :06:12.leading distance after this evening? Nobody got the qualifying distance,
:06:13. > :06:26.so she did well. Competing for a neutral flag, Kenny Shah. I have
:06:27. > :06:30.been working for a long time today. Not only Olympic champion, but has
:06:31. > :06:39.the 100 and 200 metres title to her name. It is important, isn't it, to
:06:40. > :06:48.get that good sprint, especially when it is so wet. It is. Here is
:06:49. > :06:53.Spanovic on the runway. Creates the speed at the right moment, going
:06:54. > :06:58.into the board and accelerating off. She had a great indoor season. You
:06:59. > :07:04.can see how difficult these conditions are. Grade seven metre
:07:05. > :07:14.jumpers are struggling in these conditions. Hopefully, it will dry
:07:15. > :07:17.out. Lorraine Ugen, yes. But unfortunately, Shara Proctor and
:07:18. > :07:24.Jazmin Sawyers, not a good night for them. Proctor has not competed since
:07:25. > :07:29.that car accident she had that her attorney. Going off a little bit too
:07:30. > :07:34.high off the board and not carrying her speed across. It has been tough
:07:35. > :07:43.for her, coming back from injury. She was in that top spot right
:07:44. > :07:49.until... Jazmin Sawyers said she was very disappointed. She has not been
:07:50. > :07:55.in the form we have seen her in the previous year. Not a lot of speed on
:07:56. > :08:00.the runway. She was invited to these championships, she didn't qualify.
:08:01. > :08:06.So good on her for being here. The guys were impressed with Lorraine
:08:07. > :08:11.Ugen's speed. Going into that final, with good conditions, could she have
:08:12. > :08:18.a child? I think so. It is about holding your nerve when you get to
:08:19. > :08:23.the final, and who wants it more. Friday evening that final, Lorraine
:08:24. > :08:29.Ugen going at 7:10pm. Let's have a look at the men's hammer. Nick
:08:30. > :08:34.Miller going for Great Britain. Got himself automatic qualification
:08:35. > :08:42.pretty quickly. This was fantastic. It was more like a swimming pool.
:08:43. > :08:46.Went off to the left, but did it, first round, thank you very much.
:08:47. > :08:53.For all of the events out there in these conditions, is the hammer the
:08:54. > :08:59.worst one? There was talk about suspending the competition
:09:00. > :09:05.completely until 930, -- 9:30pm, which... A couple of people fell
:09:06. > :09:09.over in the rain, but Nick Miller trained really well. Trains with
:09:10. > :09:14.Sophie Hitchon out there in California, and this is not
:09:15. > :09:18.Californian weather. This is an incident that didn't go quite
:09:19. > :09:26.bright. You've got the benefit on me. I have not seen that. This is
:09:27. > :09:30.what can go wrong with the hammer. Straight into the cage. Do we wait
:09:31. > :09:39.for that to come down before we registered the distance? If they get
:09:40. > :09:45.hooked up in there, normally they just bring out a ladder. It is a
:09:46. > :09:51.very big cage. You can't leave it up there. She's got a stick! These
:09:52. > :10:02.volunteers did not sign up for this. I don't know if they passed an exam
:10:03. > :10:08.for it either. You have a 7.25 kilos all hanging above your head. You
:10:09. > :10:17.just have a stick! And he's like, why have you not got my hammer down?
:10:18. > :10:24.Did it stay there? After the show, me, Tony and Colin will be in the
:10:25. > :10:33.stadium, trying to get it back. Good luck. Shall we move things on. Let's
:10:34. > :10:41.get back to some proper action. Mo Farah back on track after his 10,000
:10:42. > :10:44.metre gold on Saturday. He was alongside Andy Butchart of Great
:10:45. > :10:56.Britain in the 5000 metres. Here is what happened.
:10:57. > :11:02.COMMENTATOR: Mo controlling it. Doesn't want to lose that position
:11:03. > :11:07.now. There's still plenty in with the chance. He does this really
:11:08. > :11:14.well. When he decides to take control. He will not want to concede
:11:15. > :11:22.any position here. He will not want to do anything to give him a hard
:11:23. > :11:29.run on the last lap. 12.32. Mo looks strong. He is having to pass
:11:30. > :11:37.athletes, and that is a danger. Mo is looking and counting. Only five
:11:38. > :11:42.to go through by lights. They are lapping runners all the time.
:11:43. > :12:00.Checking his training partner on the inside. Still haven't got themselves
:12:01. > :12:08.clear. Top five. Mo is having to work quite hard here. Knight of
:12:09. > :12:14.Canada finishing quickly. He would get in the top five. Kejelcha,
:12:15. > :12:31.Edris, mower-macro... -- Mo.... Andy Butchart, at the back of that
:12:32. > :12:37.big group. Just needs to settle down and not do too much at all. He can
:12:38. > :12:44.run the last lap 70 seconds and still qualify. 65 seconds, I mean.
:12:45. > :12:50.It's not about gauging holding position. You don't have to be in
:12:51. > :12:57.the top five. There is the qualification. Ten of these
:12:58. > :13:01.athletes, and ten are pulling clear. Andy Butchart doing some counting
:13:02. > :13:12.now. Chelimo has done some maths as well. Ate there, and two from the
:13:13. > :13:18.other group. Chelimo has done very well to get himself back into this
:13:19. > :13:23.after that nasty fall. It was just early enough for him to get back in
:13:24. > :13:30.and get himself a qualifying place. Bar you and Andy Butchart is just
:13:31. > :13:40.having a chat with Chelimo. There was a lot of barging going on.
:13:41. > :13:50.So, mauve fire and Andy Butchart safely through. -- Mo Farah. Mo
:13:51. > :13:58.going for another gold medal on Saturday in the 5000 metres. It will
:13:59. > :14:07.be his final championship race. He only wants to go out in one way,
:14:08. > :14:13.doesn't he? He does. He's laughing! He really wants to go out with a
:14:14. > :14:19.victory. What was interesting was to see how he ran that race. Very safe,
:14:20. > :14:24.very cautious. Didn't really want to make mistakes or hit the deck. That
:14:25. > :14:31.was the thing, keep it safe and sound so he can do what we want him
:14:32. > :14:35.to do in the final. We need it for the benefit of this highlights
:14:36. > :14:41.programme, because there are no faces on our board! It will be great
:14:42. > :14:46.to decorate it more. It was a dangerous race, because of the
:14:47. > :14:52.conditions, because it got jagged in the 10,000 metres as well, and Mo
:14:53. > :14:58.talks about how tired he was after it. You get those races. Everybody
:14:59. > :15:04.jostling, getting a bit close, the rain splashing in their face.
:15:05. > :15:14.Unfortunately, as we see here, as they come out... He slips there. Has
:15:15. > :15:20.a little conversation and says, excuse me. Politely! Some jostling.
:15:21. > :15:26.People didn't want to run too fast. Wanted to save energy. And then down
:15:27. > :15:32.he goes. A pure accident. And then it's, can he get back? The legs come
:15:33. > :15:37.up. You cannot trip somebody behind you. Everybody else slips down and
:15:38. > :15:41.goes down a bit like dominoes. The thing here is to be calm and
:15:42. > :15:48.collected and try and wind the pack back in.
:15:49. > :15:59.Colin has agreed he will grow a pus attach if Andy Butchart gets a
:16:00. > :16:05.medal. Shall we see if there is a hash tag Colin's tash, Jackson tash?
:16:06. > :16:09.Let me ask the crowd. Do you all want to see Colin Jackson...?
:16:10. > :16:13.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Your public have spoken. I didn't
:16:14. > :16:19.need to finish the question. They want to see you grow a tash for the
:16:20. > :16:22.final and the chants continue. Backed by popular demand, we didn't
:16:23. > :16:29.get on air last night. This is what you get. This is what you get. If
:16:30. > :16:35.you are naughty Ali sends you out here. She a friend Al of ours. Let
:16:36. > :16:37.us move on to the 200 meet e the story, the reason we weren't on
:16:38. > :16:42.yesterday because we were talking about Isaac Makwala and the fact
:16:43. > :16:47.that the IAAF decided he wasn't healthy enough to run in the 400
:16:48. > :16:53.metres so we saw him in the 200 metres in a time trial. This is what
:16:54. > :16:57.happened earlier. About 6.30 we got him on track and, whoever was in the
:16:58. > :17:03.stadium, had only one person to root for and they did. They certainly
:17:04. > :17:09.did. 18.o 40 was the time. Everyone was looking to see if he could run
:17:10. > :17:13.fast enough to get a place in the semifinal. He did that, he did that
:17:14. > :17:21.really well. He didn't stop there. Watch this.
:17:22. > :17:26.One, two, three, four, five. There you go, a little salute to say I'm
:17:27. > :17:31.healthy, feeling good and go through to the next round. He had a point to
:17:32. > :17:38.prove. Two hours later he was in the semifinals, along with the rest of
:17:39. > :17:41.him. Here is what happened. Gets a good start does
:17:42. > :17:46.Mitchell-Blake, inside him Simbine gets a good start. Makwala going
:17:47. > :17:51.well and yuck o. Mitchell-Blake is in the race. Makwala has run a
:17:52. > :17:53.brilliant brend. Young, Makwala, Mitchell-Blake trying to charge, he
:17:54. > :17:59.has to go some to get in the top two. These three are pulling away.
:18:00. > :18:04.Makwala tiring a bit. It will be Makwala and Young. Mitchell-Blake
:18:05. > :18:09.third, what a performance from Isaac Makwala.
:18:10. > :18:15.Zharnel Hughes explodes away from the starting block and Blake will
:18:16. > :18:21.move along. It is even in the outside. Good run by Richard, and
:18:22. > :18:29.the outside Iizuka. The Japanese athlete. Zharnel Hughes is trying to
:18:30. > :18:36.get through. Blake is struggling. Richards and Sani Brown takes the
:18:37. > :18:44.second automatic qualifying place. They get away. Storming round the
:18:45. > :18:48.bend. He mate in there. Webb almost on the line, the American. He is
:18:49. > :18:52.leading it though and here comes Guliyev. Van Niekerk out of it at
:18:53. > :18:58.the moment. Only the top to to go through. It is going to be Guliyev
:18:59. > :19:02.and Webb. Van Niekerk third. Let us look at the qualifier, riches, if
:19:03. > :19:06.anything was the most impressive. He is the only one easing down across
:19:07. > :19:11.the line. Mitchell-Blake through though. That is, now that van
:19:12. > :19:15.Niekerk is on the inside in the final, we will wait for the draw,
:19:16. > :19:19.Makwala is in there. He won't get one of the better lanes because he
:19:20. > :19:23.was second. Who is the favourite there? Take your pick.
:19:24. > :19:28.As we have been saying all day, because it has been raining since
:19:29. > :19:32.about 9.00 this morning conditions awful but for Isaac Makwala, two
:19:33. > :19:36.hours after he did his time trial in there, showing everybody that, mine,
:19:37. > :19:40.what a story it would be if he was to take the gold medal tomorrow. He
:19:41. > :19:44.is the fastest in the world. Conditions were slightly different
:19:45. > :19:48.when he ran the fastest time of 19.77. I think his semifinal here
:19:49. > :19:53.was really nice and controlled, he had a difficult lane to take with
:19:54. > :19:58.being lane one but he did everything just right. He didn't blast round
:19:59. > :20:02.the bend, use a lot of energy which means he would run out of energy, he
:20:03. > :20:06.kept cool, calm and worked his way through the field. He is going to be
:20:07. > :20:09.very dangerous. I haven't seen the lane draw for tomorrow, yet, but
:20:10. > :20:13.that will have a big difference to where he is positioned on the track,
:20:14. > :20:18.come the final but he is looking very impressive and also he is
:20:19. > :20:24.running angry. He said that himself. He is frustrated and angry, that can
:20:25. > :20:28.make a man dangerous. He is heartbroken, angry, dangerous is one
:20:29. > :20:33.thing and fast is what it will be, would be he has competition, the
:20:34. > :20:39.likes of Young who won that first heat will be difficult and also
:20:40. > :20:44.Richards as well. Each one of the winners if you are first, those
:20:45. > :20:50.three plus best second placer, they draw those for lanes three, four,
:20:51. > :20:59.five and six, so van Niekerk, there is a likelihood he could end up in
:21:00. > :21:04.the inside lane, one, two or nine. I will start again! They won't get the
:21:05. > :21:10.tight lane one, but van Niekerk could be on the inside or running
:21:11. > :21:14.blind out in lane eight. What about van Niekerk, because he had to
:21:15. > :21:19.qualify as one of the fastest losers and we were talking about those guys
:21:20. > :21:24.doing those double sprints. Fatigue seems to be playing a part. And
:21:25. > :21:29.also, Ore the conditions that are here, they are not conducive for
:21:30. > :21:34.good warming up. When you have fatigue legs from being hammered, it
:21:35. > :21:38.will be its part, so he really struggle and he said it took more
:21:39. > :21:43.out of him than he thought it would do, to do so many round, so I think
:21:44. > :21:47.it was a surprise for him. The winner of that race, Guliyev, he
:21:48. > :21:51.will be very very dangerous. I mean, he is strong, he has run big
:21:52. > :21:55.Championships before, he has been on this occasion where he has the
:21:56. > :22:01.opportunity, now, before r it was Usain Bolt was the man that was
:22:02. > :22:08.there, now, I think you can get this title. Michael Johnson did the
:22:09. > :22:10.200-400 double but he got to practise tip at the US
:22:11. > :22:15.Championships, so he had the experience and knew what the volume
:22:16. > :22:21.of work was, from that point of view and he was a 200-metre runner
:22:22. > :22:28.stepping up to fours. Van Niekerk is more of a 400-metre runner stepping
:22:29. > :22:32.down to four. He does look a bit fatigued, but, got to practise tip
:22:33. > :22:35.at the US Championships, so he had the experience and knew what the
:22:36. > :22:37.volume of work was, from that point of view and he was a 200-metre
:22:38. > :22:40.runner stepping up to fours. Van Niekerk is more of a 400-metre
:22:41. > :22:42.runner stepping down to four. He does look a bit fatigued, but, maybe
:22:43. > :22:45.it is gamesmanship. Got to practise tip at the US Championships, so he
:22:46. > :22:48.had the experience and knew what the volume of work was, from that point
:22:49. > :22:50.of view and he was a 200-metre runner stepping up to fours. Van
:22:51. > :22:53.Niekerk is more of a 400-metre runner stepping down to four. He
:22:54. > :22:56.does look a bit fatigued, but, maybe it is gamesmanship. "I'm going to go
:22:57. > :22:58.in as the fastest runnerment". We haven't had a chance to Taub about
:22:59. > :23:00.Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake. He is through to the final as a fastest
:23:01. > :23:05.loser and he was dints disappointed he didn't get through as an
:23:06. > :23:09.automatic runner. He has done the double at the collegiate system, the
:23:10. > :23:13.one-two victory and gone under 20 secs so he is experienced over this
:23:14. > :23:16.particular distance, now this is is a different level for him to come to
:23:17. > :23:21.a World Championships and be in the running are, he has the potential
:23:22. > :23:25.also, to get a medal. He will look at it and think I can do this, I can
:23:26. > :23:30.really get on that rostrum. If he believes it and keeps a cool head
:23:31. > :23:40.and doesn't get carried away I see no reason why he couldn't make it.
:23:41. > :23:44.He is such a breath of fresh air. He has such a great personality, he is
:23:45. > :23:53.a lovely guy and the season he has come to, that is a tough season, to
:23:54. > :23:58.come here and do it. Zharnel Hughes? He has struggled all year. What he
:23:59. > :24:03.delivered when he first arrived, he was a big name, doing the big
:24:04. > :24:06.performances, training with the superstar, training with Usain Bolt.
:24:07. > :24:11.Beautiful fluent runner, so when you see all those thins you put them
:24:12. > :24:15.together, you think this guy has a bright future, injury has stopped
:24:16. > :24:22.him from taking another step forward. How did you find... Zharnel
:24:23. > :24:26.Hughes went to the Olympics, that is a tough train a draining year, how
:24:27. > :24:32.did you find the year after the Olympics? I won my first world title
:24:33. > :24:40.so I found it find! That proves a point. Absolutely fine. Emotionally
:24:41. > :24:46.it is tough. Remember, it is tough. I had a tough Olympic Games so I was
:24:47. > :24:51.really up for come back. We haven't got long. Have a look forward, if
:24:52. > :24:57.that is OK. Ten to ten 200-metre final tomorrow nigh. Let talks about
:24:58. > :25:01.the 400-metre hurdles tonight. We thought it would be a an American on
:25:02. > :25:04.the top of the podium, it was a very different result. Let us see what
:25:05. > :25:15.happened. It is the final of the men's 400
:25:16. > :25:21.metres hurdles. How fast will Warholm go out in lane
:25:22. > :25:29.five? He has Kerron on the inside. Look at him powering through the
:25:30. > :25:34.rain and round the bend. Up alongside Samba with TJ Holmes.
:25:35. > :25:39.Warholm is digging in. Clement has left a huge amount to do. Something
:25:40. > :25:44.flies off him. Warholm out in front. Clement beginning to make a move.
:25:45. > :25:48.Samba still there as well. Warholm now, has he spent too much? Has he
:25:49. > :25:53.given too much? He is a long way clear but there is still a long way
:25:54. > :25:58.to go for Warholm. Clement is now going to chase him down, hunt him
:25:59. > :26:06.down, Warholm hanging on, driving on, for the line, Samba has gone,
:26:07. > :26:10.Warholm, for the victory, he takes it from Clement, and Warholm his
:26:11. > :26:15.face says it all, he is the World Champion and he is Norway's first
:26:16. > :26:23.gold. Well, that was some surprise he
:26:24. > :26:28.couldn't be more in disbelief. He is in a lot of pain. Lactic acid is
:26:29. > :26:32.flowing through his veins. I think said in commentary we saw what he
:26:33. > :26:38.did in the Diamond League. He is capable. . We knew he could run
:26:39. > :26:44.fast. Could he do it adds a major Championships? I think conditions
:26:45. > :26:48.certainly favoured him coming from the east side of Norway, they are
:26:49. > :26:52.used to these condition, so for him it worked so perfectly well,
:26:53. > :26:58.magical, magical moment. Let us hope he can go from strength to strength.
:26:59. > :27:07.It is nice to see a first time medallist. What it means. There is
:27:08. > :27:19.214 nations competinger for Norway to get a medal is amazing. There is
:27:20. > :27:23.the spread. Great Britain, still in that one medal, one gold, 11th spot
:27:24. > :27:28.for now, Mo Farah could be one of them, we could be talking about and
:27:29. > :27:33.Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake in the 200 metres tomorrow, adding to that
:27:34. > :27:44.tally, but that is the state of play after day five here in Rio. In Rio?
:27:45. > :27:49.It feels like Rio. I went to a very different place. You want to be in
:27:50. > :27:56.Rio. I would love to be. I don't mind where I am with you. Guys thank
:27:57. > :28:02.you very much indeed. What you might not have seen or heard earlier, is
:28:03. > :28:13.that this lot were chanting for both Toni and Colin.
:28:14. > :28:16.And go on, keep it going. 50,000 people streamed straight past
:28:17. > :28:20.us earlier, in the rain, thinking do you know what we don't want to hang
:28:21. > :28:25.out with those two, we had seven at the start of the programme, we have
:28:26. > :28:30.upped the Toni Minichiello family to 50. Thank you to them for coming
:28:31. > :28:33.down and watching us. We have been talking about Singin' in the Rain.
:28:34. > :28:35.It is too easy, see you tomorrow. Goodbye.
