:01:09. > :01:13.Kenya defends her world title in champion again. Usain Bolt is going
:01:13. > :01:23.to take the gold medal again. Unbeatable, unsurpassable. Mo Farah
:01:23. > :01:29.
:01:29. > :01:36.Russian architecture and imagery will stop and tonight, on the third
:01:36. > :01:41.day in Moscow, it's time for the women to take centre stage. Last
:01:41. > :01:47.night it was Usain Bolt who lit up the stadium. He's going to take the
:01:47. > :01:52.gold medal again! And tonight, over the high hurdles, we will see Aries
:01:52. > :01:57.Merritt and David Oliver. And there's the young Prince of the
:01:57. > :02:03.400m, Kirani James. But tonight it is the women who are set to be the
:02:03. > :02:13.star attractions, from the strongest to the fastest. They promise to make
:02:13. > :02:24.
:02:24. > :02:34.this a night to remember at the session for you. And an added
:02:34. > :02:37.
:02:37. > :02:47.sprinting -- sprinkling of stardust sprinter. Johnson on the inside,
:02:47. > :02:51.charging into the straight. Johnson coming away. This is a marvellous
:02:51. > :02:58.performance by the favourite, Michael Johnson. Johnson wins it.
:02:58. > :03:02.What a performance! Johnson storming through. He's got to be the world
:03:02. > :03:06.champion again. It's the second fastest time of all time. Michael
:03:06. > :03:12.Johnson promised it all and delivered. Michael Johnson, yet
:03:12. > :03:16.another gold medal. Johnson, storming away to another gold
:03:16. > :03:20.medal, another World Championships title. The world record beckons...
:03:20. > :03:30.And it's gone! He said he would come here and try and do the one thing
:03:30. > :03:36.
:03:36. > :03:41.he's not been able to do. What a Michael Johnson is back in the fold.
:03:41. > :03:44.Welcome to Moscow. Thank you, it's great to be here. I'm excited, it's
:03:44. > :03:54.going to be a great Championships, it already has been. I'm so happy to
:03:54. > :03:59.be here. United! We were here last night enjoying Usain Bolt, but we
:03:59. > :04:03.were focused on the track. When you see the shots afterwards, it was
:04:03. > :04:08.almost biblical. The rain came down the second before the gun went in
:04:08. > :04:16.the 100m. The lightning bolt that appeared as well. Somebody up there
:04:16. > :04:21.is a big fan of athletics! He was anointed last night. It was amazing.
:04:21. > :04:25.When it was time to do the business he said, it's my time and claimed
:04:25. > :04:27.his crown again. Going back to that fabulous montage of your World
:04:28. > :04:34.Championships wins, I'm guessing from the facial reaction and what
:04:34. > :04:40.was going on with the mouse, the final win with the world record was
:04:40. > :04:44.your favourite. It was my favourite. The one that we just saw, 1997. I
:04:44. > :04:49.shouldn't have even been at that Championships. It was a very slow
:04:49. > :04:52.time, I was injured. I was very proud to be able to pull that one
:04:53. > :05:02.out as well. It's good to have you back. This is what we have in store
:05:03. > :05:04.
:05:04. > :05:13.Lavillenie is after the full set of medals into night pole vault final,
:05:13. > :05:23.and he looks unstoppable. Another Olympic champion, Kirani James. He
:05:23. > :05:27.
:05:27. > :05:32.is a class act over 400m. It's the night, we have another of
:05:32. > :05:39.athletic's all-time greats. Valerie Adams is after a fourth shot at the
:05:39. > :05:45.Crown. Also going for gold, Christine Ohuruogu. Has she timed it
:05:45. > :05:51.just might once again? Montsho what Botswana is the woman to become --
:05:51. > :06:01.the woman to beat. The women's 400m finals followed by the men's
:06:01. > :06:07.hurdles, where Aries Merritt hopes to add world to Olympic gold. And
:06:07. > :06:11.our climax comes with the women's 100 metre final. Will Shelley and
:06:11. > :06:21.Fraser-Pryce make it another glorious night for Jamaica? This is
:06:21. > :06:21.
:06:21. > :07:19.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:07:19. > :07:22.how to plan your evening. Lavillenie hoping that Christine Ohuruogu will
:07:22. > :07:29.get back on the podium tonight. There's one lady who looks like she
:07:29. > :07:32.is in the form of her life, and that is Montsho. She has previously not
:07:32. > :07:37.read championship racing quite right. She didn't get to where she
:07:37. > :07:41.wanted to be last year in London, but this year she is doing the
:07:41. > :07:47.business. Yes. She looks an amazing form. She will pose a lot of
:07:47. > :07:54.problems for Christine. The lane draw, I don't know who to say it
:07:54. > :08:00.favours. Christine, perhaps. She will be hoping that mantle goes off
:08:00. > :08:04.really hard in the first 200, and Christine has to stay in contention
:08:04. > :08:08.if she has any chance. The way that Christine runs, she will look like
:08:08. > :08:13.she is not in contention because that's just the way her first 200
:08:13. > :08:18.is. She's got not panic and stick to her game plan. Christine never
:08:18. > :08:23.panics. I think the lane draw actually does favour Christine with
:08:23. > :08:28.Montsho on the outside. Montreal does go out hard, and we know that
:08:28. > :08:32.Christine finishes brilliantly. The problem is, we are missing Francine
:08:32. > :08:35.and McCrory, who is probably sitting very pretty because everyone is
:08:35. > :08:39.talking about Montreal and Ohuruogu. She's never won a championship,
:08:39. > :08:44.she's in great form this year and has been consistent throughout the
:08:44. > :08:49.year. This is a great place for her to make a mark. That tends to happen
:08:49. > :08:54.quite a bit in the year after an Olympic Games. We were marvelling at
:08:54. > :08:59.Montsho the other night and her form. If you put it next to
:08:59. > :09:03.Christine, Christine is a consummate runner, but you see the composter of
:09:03. > :09:08.Montreux. She appears not to be breathing. I can assure you, not
:09:08. > :09:14.being the most experienced 400m runner, but she is breathing! She is
:09:14. > :09:19.composed, relaxed, well within herself. That is what you need at
:09:19. > :09:25.that stage of the rounds. She is trying to conserve as much energy as
:09:25. > :09:30.possible, doing just what she has to do to move on to really deliver in
:09:30. > :09:36.the final. Christine looks like she's working harder at this stage.
:09:36. > :09:40.A little bit harder. This is a preliminary round, so we don't know
:09:40. > :09:45.what type of effort each athlete puts out. But they are both there
:09:45. > :09:50.really -- very similar runners, very similar build. Both of them are very
:09:50. > :09:59.good finishers. That is what sets us up for a very good race this
:09:59. > :10:03.evening. We should look at the other contenders, maybe. In the 100m,
:10:03. > :10:08.Shelley Anne Fraser-Pryce is the Jamaican to beat. She's always the
:10:09. > :10:14.one to beat. She so consistent. To come out here and win the Olympics
:10:14. > :10:18.twice, win World Championships, now she is here again and very good
:10:18. > :10:21.shape. She's got a little bit of competition, but what we are seeing
:10:21. > :10:26.with Fraser-Pryce is that she handles competition very well.
:10:26. > :10:30.Consistent with the Jamaicans, they are very relaxed. They come into it
:10:30. > :10:35.without a lot of pressure. Even someone who is as heavy a favourite
:10:35. > :10:40.as she is and with all of the hard way she always # all of the hardware
:10:40. > :10:44.she already has, it is just built into the Jamaican society that it is
:10:44. > :10:47.this relaxed atmosphere. They bring that over to track and field.
:10:47. > :10:52.Championships don't faze them. I know you were flying overnight last
:10:52. > :10:57.night, so you missed a couple of really key races. Tirunesh Dibaba
:10:57. > :11:07.was invincible in the 10,000m, but it was the shorter, sharper and
:11:07. > :11:26.
:11:26. > :11:31.always more showbiz Usain Bolt time Could you ever doubt him? After the
:11:31. > :11:36.semi-finals I wasn't feeling good, my legs were sore. I knew it wasn't
:11:36. > :11:40.going to be a world record, so I just came out here to give a great
:11:40. > :11:46.show. There were a lot of Jamaicans in the crowd, it was beautiful. My
:11:46. > :11:51.parents were here, it's great. must be so proud of you. I know they
:11:51. > :11:56.expect me to come out and dominate, no matter what. They always want me
:11:56. > :12:01.to win. How do you stay so relaxed? I saw you putting up an umbrella
:12:01. > :12:09.metaphorically as the rain came down. It just came to be, I'm just
:12:09. > :12:16.spontaneous like that. Is any sport has a bigger star than please show
:12:16. > :12:19.me him. He is supreme. You other person to
:12:19. > :12:22.ask about expectation. When you are consistently winning Olympic and
:12:22. > :12:27.World Championships, I just get the feeling this season, that pressure,
:12:27. > :12:32.he deals with it very well, but being beaten early on in the season,
:12:32. > :12:37.as he was, it changes his mind set a little bit. You see a bit more of a
:12:37. > :12:47.serious side to him. I think that's become the model for Usain Bolt. It
:12:47. > :12:52.
:12:52. > :12:55.was the same situation, being beaten at the Jamaican trials by Johan
:12:55. > :12:58.Blake and then not performing very well after that and taking time off.
:12:58. > :13:00.When you put yourself in the shoes of Usain Bolt, who is such a huge
:13:00. > :13:03.star, he is head and shoulders better than everyone else. If he
:13:03. > :13:06.goes out there and he's healthy, he wins the races. It's very difficult
:13:06. > :13:08.for him to really get focused and to really get himself into great race
:13:08. > :13:11.shape until there's something significant at stake. We didn't win
:13:11. > :13:14.the last World Championships because of a false start. This is really
:13:14. > :13:18.something he wanted. It was just about the championship. I think that
:13:18. > :13:22.is what we are going to see. One of the things I said earlier about
:13:22. > :13:26.winning the Olympics in Beijing and then breaking the world record, him
:13:26. > :13:30.doing everything he can possibly do in the sport within a short period
:13:30. > :13:34.of time, where is the motivation coming from? What we've seen over
:13:34. > :13:39.the years is it's all about championships for him now. To expect
:13:39. > :13:44.that he's going to be running up the track on Diamond League events every
:13:44. > :13:49.year when he's got appearances and all sorts of other things to do, we
:13:49. > :13:56.are probably not going to see that. As he gets older, this will not bode
:13:56. > :13:58.well for him just to focus on Championships. It will become more
:13:58. > :14:01.of a priority to peak at World Championships. He mentioned the
:14:01. > :14:07.record, that was obviously in mind, London was an opportunity. Does that
:14:07. > :14:13.mean we've seen him run as fast as he was going to run this year?
:14:13. > :14:18.not sure. There's still a lot of running post these championships
:14:18. > :14:20.left. What we talked about his motivation. He wants to have the
:14:20. > :14:28.complete dominance. He might be looking to have be the most medalled
:14:28. > :14:32.athlete ever across all sports. I just think that must be possibly the
:14:33. > :14:38.motivation. Hopefully we will see him go through to Rio and achieve
:14:38. > :14:43.that. He could equal Carl Lewis RAPt ten golds here if he continues with
:14:43. > :14:49.the 200 and the relay. He's got a lot more running in him yet and we
:14:49. > :14:55.are loving seeing him. Before Usain Bolt took to the track last night,
:14:55. > :14:59.another of the sport's superstars. Perhaps not nearly as well known,
:14:59. > :15:09.but in athletics circles he -- as revered. Tirunesh Dibaba gave us
:15:09. > :15:35.
:15:35. > :15:45.majesty... . Dibaba kicks again, a majestic performance, world medal.
:15:45. > :15:49.
:15:49. > :15:54.because Dibaba does not speak English to the press, and she is not
:15:54. > :15:59.the show man that Usain Bolt is, she does not have that recognition, and
:15:59. > :16:04.that is a choice as much as anything else, but a 59 second lap the last
:16:04. > :16:07.one, and the way she ran the 10k last night, she is an unbelievable
:16:07. > :16:13.professional. Obviously it will be difficult to have the type of
:16:13. > :16:20.stature that Usain Bolt has as a distance runner. Only Haile
:16:20. > :16:24.Gebrselassie has been able to do that over the years but I think it
:16:24. > :16:28.is one of the things that's the supposedly about the sport, we
:16:28. > :16:32.cannot have the Tirunesh Dibaba of the sport and have the public know
:16:32. > :16:37.how incredible she is and how special she is. And that is not up
:16:37. > :16:42.to Tirunesh Dibaba, she should not have to go out and figure out how to
:16:42. > :16:47.create a Mobot or a lightning Bolt to bring attention to herself, she
:16:47. > :16:51.should be able to do that with her running. Surely with Dibaba, she
:16:51. > :16:55.should do a haircut thing? I am sure she will take that on board really
:16:55. > :16:59.well! We loved it last night, she will be in here tonight receiving
:16:59. > :17:03.her gold medal and I am sure the crowd will show their appreciation.
:17:03. > :17:13.This morning's session was tolerated by the one lap hurdles, and great
:17:13. > :17:20.
:17:20. > :17:27.fish at least came through very Sanchez started very quickly down
:17:27. > :17:30.the back straight. Sanchez sat the pace but Williams is moving nicely,
:17:30. > :17:35.the first 200 metres. This puts him in about third place at the moment
:17:35. > :17:42.but in the sound him is Clement of the USA, chances for everybody.
:17:43. > :17:47.Williams is a qualifying place, Sanchez wins it, and job done for
:17:47. > :17:52.Rhys Williams. Difficult time for the defending champion. I am
:17:52. > :18:00.guessing he will be wondering like the rest of us what he can produce
:18:00. > :18:07.here. Beside him Gordon... The top four qualify by rights, Dai Greene
:18:07. > :18:13.has started OK, trying to stay with Gordon. Phillips trying to get back
:18:13. > :18:19.into this but it is Gordon and Dai Greene dictating things. The
:18:19. > :18:24.defending champion starting to look a little tired here, as the figure
:18:24. > :18:34.of Philip, through, and can he get the? Dai Greene, quick enough, I
:18:34. > :18:35.
:18:35. > :18:41.think. Kelly Spencer of Jamaica, fourth in the Olympic Games, she has
:18:41. > :18:46.got a tough job. Safely away and Meghan Beesley did not explode out
:18:46. > :18:56.of the box, Kelly Spencer also started quickly, as has George and
:18:56. > :19:00.
:19:00. > :19:04.she has to concentrate now, Spencer in the lead. And drama in this first
:19:04. > :19:14.round, it is one of the favourites, she has gone, and Meghan Beesley has
:19:14. > :19:26.
:19:26. > :19:36.a chance here. Spencer gets there, looking composed. Shakes-Drayton in
:19:36. > :19:40.
:19:40. > :19:50.fantastic form. She has still got some work to do here. Tracy hits
:19:50. > :19:50.
:19:50. > :19:59.that one sour -- that one day, and that is the quickest we have seen so
:19:59. > :20:05.far. The final heat in this first round. Eilidh Child off to a steady
:20:05. > :20:09.start in lane one. Powering away down the back straight and she looks
:20:09. > :20:17.to be in a good position at the moment. Mohammed out in front. The
:20:17. > :20:27.victory goes to Dalila Mohammed but Eilidh Child is safely through.
:20:27. > :20:30.
:20:30. > :20:35.GABBY LOGAN: All of them safely me, really happy to see Young
:20:35. > :20:39.Sebastien getting through, he was so nervous, just coming off be straight
:20:39. > :20:43.under 23 win and he is through to the semifinals. White I wonder how
:20:43. > :20:47.you feel about Dai Greene, he got through by the skin of his teeth, he
:20:47. > :20:49.has not been in good form and pulled out of the last you will race is,
:20:49. > :20:53.when you are defending world champion and you are defending world
:20:53. > :20:57.champion Andy turned up, and you think about turning up without
:20:57. > :21:01.preparation -- and you turn up. must be for thinking that he cannot
:21:01. > :21:07.give it your best shot. Add to that, the disappointment of last
:21:07. > :21:17.year in London for Dai Greene, it is a difficult situation for him, at
:21:17. > :21:23.this point he is probably taking it round by round. And all these other
:21:23. > :21:31.guys, Gordon, Felix, all of these guys around him, so hopefully he is
:21:31. > :21:34.not saying... But as I say that and think about the 400m hurdles, it is
:21:34. > :21:37.still at the most competitive events in this sport, it will be difficult
:21:38. > :21:43.in a semifinal just to get into the final because so many guys are so
:21:43. > :21:48.evenly matched. We did a programme recently that he contributed to and
:21:48. > :21:51.said it took in a while to find out that fourth was not bad in that
:21:51. > :21:55.field in London, he had come in as world champion and expected he would
:21:55. > :22:00.be on the rostrum in his home Olympics, obviously a disappointment
:22:00. > :22:03.but the event is so loaded. Yes, and when you are world champion, you
:22:04. > :22:09.expect to take that and ride that into the Olympics and that did not
:22:09. > :22:13.happen for Dai and I am sure he is disappointed but he is still not in
:22:13. > :22:17.great shape and form, he has had injuries and setbacks so taking it
:22:17. > :22:21.round by round, he could get better each round. Anything can happen here
:22:21. > :22:25.so hopefully that is the way he is looking at it. I am sure he is
:22:25. > :22:30.working with his coach. He will treat tomorrow as if it was the
:22:30. > :22:34.final because he will have to run it as a final. When we were talking
:22:34. > :22:38.about the time of Christine Ohuruogu yesterday, rumour saying she may
:22:38. > :22:43.have to run a British record of she wants to beat Montsho tonight and we
:22:43. > :22:49.talked about Kathy Cook, it is hard to talk about it without the great
:22:49. > :22:59.Kathy Cook as a prefix, she really is the rest of female sprinter in
:22:59. > :23:00.
:23:00. > :23:04.Britain and Steve Cram went to speak COMMENTATOR: Kathy Cook Great
:23:04. > :23:10.Britain takes the bronze! She ran the 400m in a time good enough to
:23:10. > :23:14.win at London 2012. In a period that has been considered
:23:14. > :23:24.both Golden and a controversial area in athletics. That was just one of
:23:24. > :23:26.
:23:26. > :23:30.four British spin -- sprint record greatest British sprinters of all
:23:30. > :23:35.time -- Kathy. She today lives near Birmingham and teaches PE at a local
:23:35. > :23:38.school. This is from that period? You have
:23:38. > :23:46.not changed a bit. Kathy and I debated at our first Olympics in
:23:46. > :23:52.Moscow. This is your gold medal -- Cathy and I competed.
:23:52. > :23:57.These games took place in a turbulent Cold War context. After
:23:57. > :24:02.the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, the USA and 64 other countries staged a
:24:02. > :24:08.boycott making eight a unique sporting experience for us both.
:24:08. > :24:17.started to feel like it would not be a proper Olympics. And you are
:24:17. > :24:23.literally flown in, did your event and thrown -- flown home. It was
:24:23. > :24:28.quite spartan? Yes, compared to Los Angeles which was all singing and
:24:28. > :24:32.all dancing. But then again, it was still the Olympics and I was happy
:24:32. > :24:42.to get to the finals of the 100 metres and I knew in the relay that
:24:42. > :24:43.
:24:43. > :24:47.we should be in with a shout. remember walking out and people talk
:24:47. > :24:54.about the Olympic final and I am still going... And I was last
:24:54. > :24:58.straightaway. I was like that. You can talk yourself out of it, it is
:24:58. > :25:01.ridiculous and my other memory is being at the start line and it was
:25:01. > :25:07.either a Russian national anthem being played an East German one and
:25:07. > :25:16.that Hume seemed to be playing whole time, 20 47. On a big leap. To get
:25:16. > :25:20.your first Olympics -- 20 47 on a big leap. At the Moscow Olympics and
:25:20. > :25:25.in the years that followed, Kathy regularly reach the podium but more
:25:25. > :25:29.often finished her races in the wake of East German athletes clocking
:25:29. > :25:38.some of the fastest times in the sport. I remember seeing them on the
:25:38. > :25:40.warm up track and it looked like a week of my training. I ran against
:25:40. > :25:45.people like my competitors and they seemed like another species of
:25:45. > :25:49.human. What did you put that down to? I thought they were taking drugs
:25:49. > :25:54.but I thought they were probably training harder than me as well.
:25:54. > :26:02.That is what the drugs allow you to do. Yes, it is a circle.Even though
:26:02. > :26:05.you are getting better, others words doing so as well. People I had
:26:05. > :26:10.beaten I certainly could not beat and they were looking different and
:26:11. > :26:13.you start to think, that does not write. After the demise of East
:26:13. > :26:16.Germany in 1990, secret police files were opened up revealing evidence
:26:16. > :26:22.that athletes have been systematically doped during the
:26:22. > :26:27.1980s. Amongst them, many of Kathy's rivals so it is hard for her
:26:27. > :26:34.to avoid asking, what if. In 1982 at the World Championships,
:26:34. > :26:37.you run brilliantly and you were pipped at the post by someone who
:26:37. > :26:42.was subsequently named as one of those who had been taking drugs and
:26:42. > :26:48.given drugs. How does that make you feel now? That particular race is
:26:48. > :26:56.very annoying. I have got lots of copies of that photo on the
:26:56. > :26:59.finishing line of her tweaking the art. -- tweaking me. You could have
:26:59. > :27:07.won a gold medal, you never got an individual one and you certainly
:27:07. > :27:11.were a good enough athlete. Part of me thinks if I had won one, would my
:27:11. > :27:15.life have gone a different way? But I have got sponsorship? Would I have
:27:15. > :27:19.stopped working? I always work part-time or full-time. Who knows?
:27:19. > :27:23.And then it is confidence, you get the winning habit so if you win a
:27:23. > :27:27.gold medal and you know what it feels like, it must be amazing so I
:27:27. > :27:36.definitely want that to happen again. Who's to say how that have
:27:36. > :27:46.affected my career. We sit here in 2013 and you're still a British
:27:46. > :27:47.
:27:47. > :27:50.record holder, 200, 400, your times are still world-class. I remember
:27:50. > :27:53.being at school and I could not work it out, I was so much faster than
:27:53. > :28:00.everybody else and when I was in sixth form, I run against the boys
:28:00. > :28:04.and beat them as well and obviously that does knew no good as well! --
:28:04. > :28:09.does you no good. I knew I was fast. It was a burden but I definitely had
:28:09. > :28:15.to do something with that, I could not just go along and not give it my
:28:15. > :28:21.best shot. This is the 1984 period. I was in my best shape in Los
:28:21. > :28:30.Angeles and remember doing the 400 and being made with the performance.
:28:30. > :28:34.And I felt like I was flying, I felt brilliant. You were two and a half
:28:34. > :28:38.hours late at a welcome home street party! Our kids were reading in the
:28:38. > :28:43.press and on TV of Kathy's achievements which they were not
:28:43. > :28:51.even aware of. We got older and then realised then that what she had
:28:51. > :29:00.achieved. To see that our mum's time would have still won gold, it was
:29:00. > :29:07.impressive. Nice to know. I look for this headline, cool Cookies on the
:29:07. > :29:11.boil. I cannot believe I did it, for a start, and I have got medals to
:29:12. > :29:21.look at which is lovely for me. I am just pleased with what I did and I
:29:22. > :29:30.
:29:30. > :29:34.am content so what is to complain life thinking, what if? But she was
:29:34. > :29:43.just supremely naturally talented. You could even see body shape wise,
:29:43. > :29:48.she looked like she did a quarter of the training of those Eastern Bloc
:29:49. > :29:53.athletes. Some people are just born to run, she was one of them. I
:29:53. > :29:57.remember seeing her on the side of a cereal packet when I was a little
:29:57. > :30:00.girl. I collected my Olympics stars. I thought you was the most amazing
:30:00. > :30:04.athlete. It was, like, how does she do it? This is the real crime of
:30:04. > :30:12.drug cheats. They steal from athletes like that, they take away
:30:12. > :30:17.that dream of what could have been. Luckily, she is not bitter, she has
:30:17. > :30:21.moved on and has a wonderful family, but that could have changed
:30:21. > :30:24.her life. To put it in context, in absolute terms, she could have given
:30:24. > :30:26.up her job and been a full-time athlete, got some sponsorship and
:30:26. > :30:29.who knows what she could have done? But the fact that Christine Ohuruogu
:30:29. > :30:34.is still chasing that 400m record and she may have to break it if she
:30:34. > :30:38.wants to win this goal tonight. of the things that struck me that
:30:38. > :30:40.she said there in that piece, and this is one of the things that I
:30:40. > :30:42.think people don't understand, the real consequences of drug cheats on
:30:42. > :30:45.other athletes. Had she won one championship, she would have then
:30:45. > :30:49.have the confidence from that experience of having one. Then what
:30:49. > :30:51.does that mean for the remainder of your career? We talked about my own
:30:52. > :30:54.career earlier. Having won a championship, it put me in a very
:30:54. > :30:58.good position going into other championships because I'd been there
:30:58. > :31:02.before and there was the confidence that Cathy was never able to have.
:31:02. > :31:07.Hopefully we will see confidence in heats tonight from Aries Merritt. He
:31:07. > :31:11.won the Olympic gold last year in the 110m hurdles. We broke the world
:31:11. > :31:21.record in Brussels. He arrives after a mixed season, but he's looking for
:31:21. > :31:44.
:31:45. > :31:48.goal tonight. Me versus the world, I he's one of the most likeable
:31:48. > :31:58.athletes on the circuit. So let's hand you down to commentary now with
:31:58. > :31:58.
:31:58. > :32:04.sharpness of Aries Merritt. He did his hamstring earlier in the season
:32:04. > :32:08.racing in sham -- Shanghai, and it's always been catching up since then.
:32:08. > :32:13.He was all conquering last season and to go huge chunk of the world
:32:13. > :32:17.record racing in Brussels. But this is a title that he wants to complete
:32:17. > :32:23.the collection, but this is a very strong heat. Just two semi-finals
:32:23. > :32:33.here. The gold, silver and bronze medallists from the London Olympics
:32:33. > :32:47.
:32:47. > :32:55.are here. This is the bronze team-mate, Shubenkov. He's the 2008
:32:55. > :33:05.world junior champion. There is the defending world champion. The
:33:05. > :33:11.
:33:11. > :33:19.elegant hurdler, Jason Richardson. brothers. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde
:33:19. > :33:21.didn't come through the heats but Thomas looked pretty good. There is
:33:21. > :33:31.the Olympic champion, the world indoor champion and world
:33:31. > :33:45.
:33:45. > :33:49.champion, became his country's first ever world champion or indeed
:33:49. > :33:56.championship medallist in athletics. Completing the line-up is
:33:56. > :34:06.Baji, of Hungary. Four times the Hungarian champion. He ran a
:34:06. > :34:24.
:34:24. > :34:29.personal best to come through his in the men's 110m hurdles. The first
:34:29. > :34:39.three to go through automatically to the final later on tonight. The next
:34:39. > :34:50.
:34:51. > :34:55.much noise. Yes, it's important these hurdlers can settle down into
:34:55. > :34:59.their blocks. They have obstacles in front of them that are pretty high
:34:59. > :35:05.and heavy, also. You want to have as much concentration adiposity can at
:35:05. > :35:10.this very critical and crucial part of the race. Colin, Breanna Rollins
:35:10. > :35:13.was talking about the hurdles being wooden instead of plastic, they were
:35:13. > :35:23.too heavy and she hurt herself in training. I will bring that up
:35:23. > :35:23.
:35:23. > :36:13.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:36:13. > :36:16.Richardson gets it, Merritt settled for third. Merritt, what a dreadful
:36:16. > :36:23.start from Aries Merritt. In-out will watch the clock and weight, but
:36:23. > :36:30.I do not think, with a winning time of 13.34, that it's going to be good
:36:30. > :36:34.enough. The Olympic champion may have gone. It was an absolutely
:36:34. > :36:39.awful race. Scrappy on many levels. We were unsure whether it was going
:36:39. > :36:42.to be. Oh. Look at all this different movement going on, people
:36:43. > :36:48.reacting at different times. Aries Merritt didn't react at all. I don't
:36:48. > :36:52.know what he was waiting for! There was a huge struggle for him to get
:36:52. > :36:55.to the first hurdle. The Russian athlete is injured, pulled a
:36:55. > :37:05.hamstring. Parchment starts to make his way through the field. He
:37:05. > :37:06.
:37:06. > :37:16.clatters a hurdle and he is out. Aries Merritt, he dips. The first
:37:16. > :37:24.
:37:24. > :37:31.three, it says. I think UNIX his way Parchment on the third. Richardson
:37:31. > :37:35.out in front. Merritt straining to try and get there. What a mess at
:37:35. > :37:40.the start from Aries Merritt. If that is to be the end of his
:37:40. > :37:46.campaign, all of his own making. It was untidy from everyone. Very sad
:37:46. > :37:56.to see Parchment there, the bronze medallist in London. He is taken off
:37:56. > :38:05.
:38:05. > :38:10.the track. Shabanov also receiving especially the French guy there. His
:38:10. > :38:13.leg was moving already. He's in lane six, he was twitching consistently.
:38:13. > :38:17.I'm surprised the starter didn't pull them back or at least tell them
:38:17. > :38:27.to stand up. He will no doubt be getting signals in his ear to say
:38:27. > :38:29.
:38:29. > :38:35.that people are not stationary. And for the athletes to be released...
:38:35. > :38:39.These two, one has been the world champion, from Barbados, Merritt,
:38:39. > :38:48.from the US, the Olympic champion. I'm looking at the reaction times,
:38:48. > :38:56.they are atrocious. I'm not going to pretend here, lane eight was 0.397.
:38:56. > :39:00.And Aries Merritt was 0.327. Terrible reaction times. But we saw
:39:00. > :39:07.why, lots of movement in the blocks beforehand. I was getting a bit
:39:07. > :39:15.excited as well, I thought... Aries Merritt does go through as an
:39:15. > :39:25.automatic qualifier. If he tidies up that start and decides to do a
:39:25. > :39:34.
:39:34. > :39:39.proper start in the final, all will mixed season coming into this, but
:39:39. > :39:44.that doesn't explain a start like that. I'm not quite sure it was
:39:44. > :39:47.totally Aries Merritt's fault. I agree with Colin, there was lots of
:39:47. > :39:52.agree with Colin, there was lots of movement by many different people.
:39:52. > :39:57.If you look at the three athletes, maybe even four, on the right side
:39:57. > :40:02.of your screen at the start, all of those guys are out to stop everyone
:40:02. > :40:08.else is still in the box. That tells me that someone over on the left
:40:08. > :40:13.side of the track moved first and everyone else moved with them. But
:40:13. > :40:16.the guys on the right side of the track, including Aries Merritt,
:40:16. > :40:21.didn't feel that movement, so they were sitting there waiting for the
:40:21. > :40:26.gun. I don't think everyone was settled. A great job by Aries
:40:26. > :40:33.Merritt, getting himself back into this race to qualify. The Olympic
:40:33. > :40:37.champion had it all to do, Denise, from about 50, he was back in almost
:40:37. > :40:43.six plays. Absolutely. The key at that point is not to panic. He has
:40:43. > :40:48.to trust in his hurdling ability, his reputation. I'm staggered, he
:40:48. > :40:53.was literally asleep in the blocks. As Michael said, the guys on his
:40:53. > :40:58.right were wobbling in the blocks, but the guy from France was
:40:58. > :41:02.stationary and unaffected. I'm really surprised at that. Luckily he
:41:02. > :41:08.is through, because I think he is in better shape than he was early in
:41:08. > :41:13.the season. When the Russian went down, I somehow had decided that map
:41:13. > :41:19.he had decided they were going to start again. It was all very
:41:19. > :41:23.confusing. Parchment was taken away as well. It wasn't a textbook race
:41:23. > :41:28.from anybody. It wasn't a vintage semifinal. The Russian pulled up
:41:28. > :41:33.injured, he was probably holding his hamstring. Parchment has had his
:41:33. > :41:38.problems, he got injured in the warm up at the Jamaican trials, so his
:41:38. > :41:48.preparations have also been hampered. Will shaman is in the next
:41:48. > :41:48.
:41:48. > :41:51.semifinal. Let's hope things are a bit smoother here. Two years ago,
:41:51. > :42:01.William Sharman came to the final but it was Andy Turner who came
:42:01. > :42:19.
:42:19. > :42:24.through the carnage on that occasion Richardson, a man who has got under
:42:24. > :42:32.13 seconds, qualifies in 13.34, he wins it on that time. That semifinal
:42:32. > :42:35.was pretty tame. I'm expecting this one to be much swifter. An eye on
:42:35. > :42:42.the fastest loser spots. Oliver would expect to be the favourite
:42:42. > :42:47.here. The Olympic bronze medallist back in 2008. Shubenkov, the
:42:47. > :42:57.Russian, will be the home crowd favourite. He's just seen his
:42:57. > :43:25.
:43:25. > :43:31.fastest losers. The final in two and former European indoor champion, but
:43:31. > :43:35.it looks like his best running is behind him now. David Oliver coming
:43:35. > :43:39.back into good form just that the right time. In 2080 was probably the
:43:39. > :43:49.favourite going into the final but he ended up with a bronze medal.
:43:49. > :43:50.
:43:50. > :44:00.Dominating back then. Dash back in 2008. This is a student of
:44:00. > :44:09.
:44:10. > :44:14.Hasn't yet to run under 13 seconds, and that is the benchmark of true,
:44:14. > :44:18.world-class 100m hurdling. Same for Shubenkov. But the Russians have
:44:18. > :44:28.high hopes for this man. Still just 22, European indoor champion this
:44:28. > :44:32.year. Here is Will Sharman. So disappointed last year not to be
:44:32. > :44:36.involved. Commonwealth Games silver medallist. Has been fourth and fifth
:44:36. > :44:46.at the last two World Championships. British fans in the stadium to cheer
:44:46. > :44:50.
:44:50. > :44:54.him on. Andrew Riley of Jamaica. The Jamaican in. -- champion. The first
:44:54. > :45:04.three, if you can. Clean race, give yourself the best chance and then,
:45:04. > :45:28.
:45:28. > :45:32.if you can't win, 13.49. They are down on the track. The second
:45:32. > :45:42.semifinal of the men's 110m semifinal, David Oliver here in lane
:45:42. > :46:00.
:46:00. > :46:09.Oliver, Will Sharman is fifth or sixth, I think, 13.18. That got the
:46:10. > :46:13.crowd going, didn't it? Sharman knows he is out but Shubenkov got a
:46:13. > :46:18.reasonable start, not the best start, watch this, Colin. Shubenkov
:46:18. > :46:22.maybe not as good as Sharman out of the blocks but what a good race from
:46:22. > :46:26.the Russian. That he is a very strong athlete, I have seen him
:46:26. > :46:30.prepared and he gets into this rhythm. He is not the best
:46:30. > :46:38.technically but he is strong and each stride he takes is very active
:46:38. > :46:43.and that puts him very well placed. David Oliver beat in the qualifying
:46:43. > :46:48.yesterday but Shubenkov has turned it on today. We will look at this
:46:48. > :46:51.again, Will Sharman has got a chance here, I thought he was fifth on the
:46:51. > :46:59.line and wedges with the bully times to come through, I thought he might
:46:59. > :47:04.be sixth. I think he out leans Noga. If he is quicker than that, it will
:47:04. > :47:07.be an anxious wait, but he may have a chance here. That was not the best
:47:07. > :47:12.angle for us to check that out that while we are waiting for that, let's
:47:12. > :47:17.watch him head on. He is a very smooth hurdler, Will Sharman, that
:47:17. > :47:22.is a big advantage and he is a confident man and this year, he said
:47:22. > :47:25.his reparations have nearly been flawless so he has moved his way
:47:25. > :47:28.into really high-class sprint hurdling and it is nice to see him
:47:28. > :47:33.here settling in. He's not worried about what is going on around him,
:47:33. > :47:38.he can see that Shubenkov is on his shoulders but he keeps nice and
:47:38. > :47:48.focused and ready to move on, this looks good. The good news is that by
:47:48. > :47:53.
:47:53. > :47:57.100th of a second, he has not good enough but you are in the
:47:57. > :48:00.final, your reaction? I was surprised because I thought I was
:48:00. > :48:04.winning because Shubenkov and the Jamaican were behind me and I know
:48:04. > :48:08.they are quick and then I came into the finish line, dipped and there
:48:08. > :48:12.was a time of other guys ahead of me and I thought, oh, my goodness! I
:48:12. > :48:16.thought they had not made the grade so I am really pleased to be in the
:48:16. > :48:21.final. I love everybody at home because of your support, just wish
:48:21. > :48:25.me luck in the final, I will give it my best shot, 100%, I will guarantee
:48:25. > :48:35.I will give you my best shot and hopefully I will come away with some
:48:35. > :48:39.jewellery. Let's hope so, all the glad that my first look, I thought
:48:39. > :48:49.he had not mean him out but there is the evidence, very good for the
:48:49. > :48:49.
:48:50. > :48:53.Russian, David Oliver just out leans by the Russian, and it is a good job
:48:53. > :48:57.that Aries Merritt came through because he would not have been quick
:48:57. > :49:01.enough because the second semifinal was much faster.
:49:01. > :49:05.GABBY LOGAN: By the same token, good job that Will Sharman was in the
:49:05. > :49:08.semifinal he was because that disrupted first semifinal not being
:49:08. > :49:13.as quick, and him being further down the field than he thought he was,
:49:13. > :49:16.because he thought he was winning, he goes from hero to zero and zero
:49:16. > :49:24.to hero very quickly. We are delighted he has got himself into
:49:24. > :49:28.the final. Yes because he has had his injuries and it pays off Micro
:49:28. > :49:33.to be patient and work well and he has he has got his reward and he
:49:33. > :49:37.deserves to be in the final. Andy Turner, a bronze medallist in Daegu
:49:37. > :49:45.has given his prediction and he reckons the USA will take a clean
:49:45. > :49:49.sweep, do you agree? You have got the wild card that the Americans
:49:49. > :49:53.have four, a real good chance there but they will all have to do a lot
:49:53. > :50:00.better than they did today. So David Oliver did not have a great start,
:50:00. > :50:03.and Aries Merritt, he is caught up in a bit of a situation the weather
:50:03. > :50:09.the start was fair or not great so all of them will have to do better
:50:09. > :50:17.in the final. But I think that they will wipe the brow and say at least
:50:17. > :50:20.it was a good thing it was a semifinal. I think that Shubenkov
:50:20. > :50:25.will get in there and makes that up because he will be pumped up.
:50:25. > :50:29.crowd love that. He shows that there are more ways to skin a cat, more
:50:29. > :50:34.than one way to do the hurdles and more than one technique that works
:50:34. > :50:40.because he is very compact and yet not quite as elegant as some people
:50:40. > :50:44.next to Aries Merritt, if you put it like that, his style is not as
:50:44. > :50:49.aesthetically pleasing. That is not very nice! We have seen him indoors,
:50:49. > :50:55.he is tight and compact and what he does really well, he can sneak up on
:50:55. > :51:00.you because he is always there, he can hurdle nine and ten and creeps
:51:00. > :51:05.up on you. He is effective, he is a tall athlete and he is a tidy
:51:05. > :51:10.hurdler. And I agree with Mike, he will upset the party. It will not be
:51:10. > :51:13.a clean sweep, I don't think. final later on, made all the better
:51:13. > :51:21.that Will Sharman will be there for us and add a British interest. You
:51:21. > :51:26.see the successful lean from Sharman. One 100th of a second, the
:51:26. > :51:30.margins of the sport can be so cruel it can work against you or against
:51:30. > :51:34.you, when it works for you it is brilliant. We are delighted for him
:51:34. > :51:39.and that sport, it is sometimes very painful when you at the other side
:51:39. > :51:43.of that decision. But great for Will Sharman. We have got plenty coming
:51:43. > :51:50.up for you this evening, lots of finals. If you have just come in and
:51:50. > :51:53.wanted a reminder of what they are, have a look at this. At 4:35pm, the
:51:53. > :51:58.women's 100 metres semifinals and the heptathlon going on with 200
:51:58. > :52:01.metres, the semifinals of the 400m with Kirani James and LaShawn
:52:01. > :52:07.Merritt going on as well. We have got a packed evening, Valerie Adams
:52:07. > :52:11.in the shot put, just about everything available, she has won
:52:11. > :52:14.back twice but denied the gold in London last year. If she wins it
:52:14. > :52:20.tonight, it will be doubly celebrated and Christine Ohuruogu
:52:20. > :52:23.and Amantle Montsho, the two main protagonists going in the 400m later
:52:23. > :52:29.on which is probably the race we are most looking forward to, Denise,
:52:29. > :52:32.would you say? Absolutely! I will endeavour to stay in my seat because
:52:32. > :52:37.I really hope Christine... It is safe to say that she will get a
:52:37. > :52:43.medal but which colour, I am still not sure. Let's hope it is gold!
:52:43. > :52:46.multi-event for the women started today, and we are without Jessica
:52:46. > :52:50.Ennis-Hill who is out because of injury but we have Katarina
:52:50. > :52:53.Johnson-Thompson going very well at the moment but it is Jess's Olympic
:52:53. > :53:03.gold that we all remember last year and hoped we could see her once
:53:03. > :53:07.
:53:07. > :53:14.again becoming world champion in That from the left-hand side and she
:53:14. > :53:18.is away strongly here. Belgium is going well but it will be a very
:53:19. > :53:28.good time indeed, that is a cracking start to her aspirations to win this
:53:29. > :53:37.
:53:37. > :53:47.watch the clock, it could be crucial, she is flying and she
:53:47. > :53:53.
:53:53. > :54:00.certainly has produced a lifetime throw. Not very quick and it is not
:54:00. > :54:04.very long but 43.54 is a very solid start indeed. It has been a long,
:54:04. > :54:10.hard, gruelling two days but if things stay the way they are, we are
:54:10. > :54:16.looking at a world champion and she's coming once more. Great
:54:16. > :54:26.Britain has found another great star. The girl from the city of
:54:26. > :54:30.
:54:30. > :54:35.steel came to Berlin hunting for ago in Burling, so much has happened
:54:35. > :54:38.since Angie is missed, isn't she? Not just us, the whole event because
:54:38. > :54:43.she is such a golden girl and a great athlete and we miss watching
:54:43. > :54:50.her. Yes, she lifts the spirits but that performance in 2009 was really
:54:50. > :54:54.the start of the Jessica Ennis-Hill dominance over the event and
:54:54. > :54:59.considering she has had that dreadful setback in 2008, the
:54:59. > :55:04.injured foot and ankle, that cost her a place in the Olympics, she
:55:04. > :55:08.could not go, her season was wiped out, she came back and is completely
:55:09. > :55:13.annihilated the field. Was that the first time... Because she had to
:55:13. > :55:17.change her lead off foot in the long jump, because of the injury before?
:55:17. > :55:20.She would have competed in May, but that was the first major
:55:20. > :55:23.championships and so it is great to see her and she went from strength
:55:23. > :55:30.to strength, building on her strength and her throw has got
:55:30. > :55:34.better. We saw that athlete in her in the Olympics, the darling of our
:55:34. > :55:36.nation. She has revealed today or in the last 24 hours that she will
:55:36. > :55:42.compete in the Commonwealth Games next year in Glasgow which is
:55:42. > :55:51.fantastic news. Let's have a catch up with the heptathlon, two events
:55:51. > :55:56.COMMENTATOR: Not only Jessica Ennis-Hill missing, but the Russian
:55:56. > :56:01.defending champion who is also not there. We had to wait until he'd
:56:01. > :56:03.four of the hurdles before we saw the first sign of Katarina
:56:03. > :56:13.Johnson-Thompson who faded a little bit in the mid-race but came through
:56:13. > :56:20.strongly in the end, it was completed by the Russian and...
:56:20. > :56:25.Ashton Eaton, the leader's husband who won the decathlon and is the
:56:25. > :56:31.world record-holder supporting his wife and she obliged in the high
:56:31. > :56:38.jump. 1.86 metres, she was followed by Katarina Johnson-Thompson, 1.83
:56:38. > :56:44.metres. And she was coming on stronger as the event progressed.
:56:44. > :56:52.1016 points for Katarina. The Ukrainian had a huge amount of
:56:52. > :57:02.support in the stadium. She jumped 1.86 metres. And then 18-year-old
:57:02. > :57:04.
:57:04. > :57:07.Amy Kiam from Belgium -- Tian. And then they shot but, 4135, some big
:57:07. > :57:14.points for the American. And she would have climbed up the table with
:57:14. > :57:24.that, she was lying in fifth place after the first two events and then
:57:24. > :57:29.
:57:29. > :57:34.we had the lady in second place, Theisen Eaton and then still waiting
:57:34. > :57:37.for Katarina Johnson-Thompson to pretty something because she fouled
:57:38. > :57:41.in the first round, this was the second round and which is pretty
:57:41. > :57:51.Phil Jones out in the training camp, it was going to be a weak event and
:57:51. > :57:53.
:57:53. > :57:57.so it proved to be, 11.37, her best stadium, she is waiting to take her
:57:57. > :58:02.third round throw. If she can get another 50 centimetres or so, that
:58:02. > :58:07.would be very good indeed for the British number one here in Moscow.
:58:07. > :58:10.Katarina moves into fourth place after the high jump. So certainly in
:58:10. > :58:15.with a shout of finishing in the top six but she has to get through day
:58:15. > :58:20.two, and after the shot put, we have the final event of the heptathlon on
:58:20. > :58:24.day one, the 200 metres. GABBY LOGAN: Katarina
:58:24. > :58:28.Johnson-Thompson, at the beginning of the year, she thought she was
:58:28. > :58:35.getting more experience under the tutelage of Jessica Ennis-Hill,
:58:35. > :58:40.seeing her as her mental, who she can follow up behind. It gives her a
:58:40. > :58:44.different dynamic and responsibility that you maybe wasn't expecting.
:58:44. > :58:48.wasn't sure if it was a positive or negative, but it thrusts her into
:58:48. > :58:53.the limelight which I am not sure if she is ready for. She competed very
:58:53. > :58:58.well in London, she loved that stage but looking at her body language
:58:58. > :59:06.right now, in an event she does not like, particularly. I do not get
:59:06. > :59:08.positive vibes from her but I hope she really gets a positive throw.
:59:08. > :59:14.She was waiting for another athlete to finish but she certainly looks
:59:14. > :59:18.pensive. Guess, because she knows that other girls are much stronger.
:59:18. > :59:27.It is a really turning point for this event, she happily will throw
:59:27. > :59:32.it better. 619 points for Katarina, come on. Drive across and hit it.
:59:32. > :59:38.Well... I honestly don't know, I think it is maybe a little further
:59:38. > :59:48.but this is an event where she does struggle and so her body language is
:59:48. > :59:51.all wrong. She was confident in the high jump, she is a 1.89 metres
:59:51. > :59:59.performer but 11.52, that is an improvement that she is down in 14th
:59:59. > :00:09.place. -- but she is down. We are getting excited for the semifinals
:00:09. > :00:14.of the women's 100 metres, we have got Cribari but is there a chance we
:00:14. > :00:19.might get our first British woman in a World Championship ever final?
:00:19. > :00:25.It will be really tough and I am being honest. She will have to run
:00:25. > :00:28.her heart out. She will have to run a personal best to do it. She has
:00:28. > :00:33.got opponents in very fine form. A couple of Jamaicans to perform
:00:33. > :00:39.against so she must try to repeat what she did in that opening round
:00:39. > :00:44.where she got a great start and she needs that now. She has had a hard
:00:44. > :00:48.time of it after an horrendous injury, she is on the start line.
:00:48. > :00:51.Fantastic experience of nothing else. Yes and hopefully she is
:00:51. > :00:58.looking at it that way. She is looking there and I would be running
:00:58. > :01:04.against the light of Blessing Okagbare. She can actually get
:01:04. > :01:09.caught up in that and run a good phrase, she has had a good track,
:01:09. > :01:12.next to Calvert who has a good start every time. If she gets a good start
:01:12. > :01:22.and gets into the drive and runs her own race, she will have to deliver
:01:22. > :01:30.
:01:30. > :01:34.that. Asha Philip looking a little nervous. This is obviously the level
:01:34. > :01:38.of competition she will have dreams of getting into, through all of
:01:38. > :01:43.those injury problems. She is finally here. But this is really
:01:43. > :01:53.tough. Three semi-finals, the first two and two fastest will be going
:01:53. > :02:31.
:02:31. > :02:39.through to the final in a couple of back in April and then ran 11.06 in
:02:39. > :02:48.the final in the Trinidad Championships. Povkh of Ukraine in
:02:48. > :02:57.lane three. She is a fast starter. Gold Cup what does not club Bari,
:02:57. > :03:07.when she worked #. She is in the form of her life and will be the
:03:07. > :03:17.
:03:17. > :03:23.busiest athlete in these her dad was a big influence on her
:03:23. > :03:31.early career. He was a bit of a basketball player. A brilliant
:03:31. > :03:41.sprinter. From Florida. Sailer finding some form. She's been around
:03:41. > :03:51.
:03:51. > :04:01.getting a chance on a big stage. Calvert was third in the Jamaican
:04:01. > :04:09.
:04:09. > :04:13.rounds, we saw Gardner running a very different sort of heat to
:04:13. > :04:23.Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. This time, there's not too much room for
:04:23. > :04:23.
:04:23. > :05:10.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:05:10. > :05:16.messing around. The final later on. Freeman is there, Sailer is there.
:05:16. > :05:20.Just the first two. It's going to be the two big names, Okagbare and
:05:20. > :05:30.Freeman. Sailer ran well but couldn't hold onto these two. Not
:05:30. > :05:32.
:05:32. > :05:38.particularly fast, but it was good enough. Povkh gets out so quickly.
:05:38. > :05:42.It was always going to be difficult for Asha Philip. Okagbare is a
:05:42. > :05:46.danger, you cannot write her off. I know with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
:05:46. > :05:50.and Camilla Jeter and the rest of it, but when she comes through this
:05:50. > :05:54.strongly, if she gets it right at the start, she will be a big danger
:05:54. > :05:58.in the final. She is strong, she proved that in the long jump
:05:58. > :06:02.yesterday. She's already got that silver medal in the bag. But I think
:06:02. > :06:08.the focus will now be on this 100. She's got a really lovely running
:06:09. > :06:12.gait. She always looks very relaxed. As it comes to the back end of the
:06:12. > :06:17.race, she opens up her stride. Cruising across the line to take the
:06:17. > :06:23.victory in 11.08. I think she still will have her work cut out unless
:06:23. > :06:27.she can really sort out that start. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce has got that
:06:27. > :06:33.bullet like start in comparison. Let's have a closer look at Asha
:06:33. > :06:38.Philip. Out of the blocks well, the drive is really hard, head still
:06:38. > :06:44.down, working all the way through. Watch when she pops head up and
:06:44. > :06:49.starts to focus. She needs to keep her relaxation, keep working well,
:06:49. > :06:56.try and put herself through. She manages to finish seventh in that
:06:56. > :07:00.semifinal. Not sure how she will feel about that. Of course, that's
:07:00. > :07:07.what she wanted to do, a personal best here. But I think it's
:07:07. > :07:14.important that you still work hard and concentrate. Now she's talking
:07:14. > :07:19.with Phil. Colin Jackson making the point about there may be some mixed
:07:19. > :07:23.feelings, the fact you are here at all is tremendous. But you wanted a
:07:23. > :07:28.personal best. How would you sum it up? I'm slightly disappointed. I
:07:28. > :07:32.came here to run a PB and I didn't achieve it, but it's a learning
:07:32. > :07:38.curve. I'm learning as days go on a the Championship, it's lovely to be
:07:38. > :07:44.here. I am disappointed but I can only work from this. What was going
:07:44. > :07:48.through your mind at the start, have the nerves settle down? I was
:07:48. > :07:54.nervous. I was more controlled and thought, yeah, I can do this. My
:07:54. > :07:57.race wasn't as great as I thought it would be. My coach will moan at me.
:07:57. > :08:04.But I don't know, I'm not in that complaining good because I
:08:04. > :08:14.experienced it, I've done it once now. So the next time, hopefully I
:08:14. > :08:40.
:08:40. > :08:44.can make a final. And you want more There are two men in the competition
:08:44. > :08:48.called Lavillenie, one is the Olympic champion, Renaud Lavillenie.
:08:48. > :08:54.This is his younger brother, Valentin Lavillenie. This is an
:08:54. > :08:58.important job for this youngster. Third and final attempt at 5.50. His
:08:58. > :09:08.brother, who hasn't started yet, is halfway down the runway, just
:09:08. > :09:30.
:09:30. > :09:40.bar. He certainly has jumped this will attempt to win his first ever
:09:40. > :09:48.
:09:48. > :09:58.world title here. He's very upset didn't have the depth over the bar.
:09:58. > :10:17.
:10:18. > :10:26.here. Only this woman went below 11 seconds in the first round. It was
:10:26. > :10:36.extraordinary, she went out hard and fast, left nothing out there. She
:10:36. > :10:47.
:10:47. > :10:53.ran 10.94. The intensity was to the crowd, but her focus is
:10:53. > :11:03.absolute at the moment. The South American champion also looked good
:11:03. > :11:13.
:11:13. > :11:18.for the first time, she's not wearing all the strapping on her
:11:18. > :11:23.right thigh that she did yesterday. She struggled out of the blocks
:11:23. > :11:30.yesterday, she has struggled all season with a quad injury. She's not
:11:30. > :11:36.in the kind of form to go to the world title two years ago. Brooks,
:11:36. > :11:40.former Commonwealth champion. Perhaps the weakest of the Jamaicans
:11:40. > :11:50.on display in this 100m, fourth in the Jamaican Championships. The
:11:50. > :12:27.
:12:28. > :12:37.line-up completed by the Nigerian English Gardner got out so quickly
:12:38. > :13:04.
:13:04. > :13:10.just two to go through automatically. Jeter dips and comes
:13:10. > :13:14.back, she is still strong. Jeter takes the victory. The defending
:13:14. > :13:23.champion is into the final. She timed that well. We worried about
:13:23. > :13:28.her. Worry no more, perhaps. English Gardner started well but faded a
:13:28. > :13:33.little as the race went on. Not so, Carmelita Jeter. It's really great
:13:33. > :13:37.to see, leader Jeter back. We saw her run the last leg in Monaco and
:13:37. > :13:40.she looked very good, but then she was struggling with her form. Now
:13:40. > :13:45.look how she relies on this wonderful technique that has been
:13:45. > :13:51.honed by her coach, John Smith. She calls herself through and then just
:13:51. > :13:58.out leans her and going sub 11 seconds. That is a very important
:13:58. > :14:02.thing for us to see. English Gardner exploded, but I don't think she had
:14:02. > :14:06.the same pick-up as she had in the heats. She was under pressure quite
:14:06. > :14:12.early compared to the heats. But look at this, this is good, strong
:14:12. > :14:16.running by these women. It's nice to see that. Very competitive. Coming
:14:16. > :14:26.towards the line, let's have a look at this. As they came to the line,
:14:26. > :14:27.
:14:27. > :14:37.if you watch Jeter... I think she clashes. They are coming closer and
:14:37. > :14:37.
:14:37. > :14:42.closer to each other. She avoids are there just. Jeter very close to the
:14:42. > :14:52.inside of her lane there. Gardner run out of it. She is on 11 seconds
:14:52. > :14:55.
:14:55. > :15:05.where she ran 10.94. 11 seconds flat might still be good enough, two
:15:05. > :15:12.
:15:12. > :15:18.impressive was the weather at Carmelita Jeter came through and the
:15:18. > :15:24.way English Gardner finished. GABBY LOGAN: English Gardner might
:15:24. > :15:31.have had a late start that it is how you finish and Carmelita Jeter,
:15:31. > :15:35.almost out of her lane. Yet this, wasn't she just. Yes, wasn't she
:15:35. > :15:41.just. This is a different woman to the one we saw yesterday. She is
:15:42. > :15:51.favouring that side, the whole race. I do not know if that is her quad
:15:52. > :15:52.
:15:52. > :15:56.injury but if she tries to hold that but also another athlete, Ahoure is
:15:56. > :16:01.close to her line but it is great to see them both get through. We have
:16:01. > :16:04.seen Ahoure run very well, she was winning in Monaco and she will be
:16:04. > :16:09.one to watch. English garden will be hoping that the next race, the final
:16:09. > :16:14.semifinal is not the quickest and she will make it through as the
:16:14. > :16:21.fastest loser. -- English Gardner. Pleased with what appears to be
:16:21. > :16:27.Carmelita Jeter's comeback? Five metres from the line, she felt
:16:27. > :16:31.herself started to go over into the lane of Ahoure and basically shut
:16:31. > :16:37.down, and still run under 11 seconds so when I look at this final, later
:16:37. > :16:41.this evening, she has to be the favourite at this point. It will
:16:41. > :16:46.give Carmelita Jeter a tremendous amount of confidence going into this
:16:46. > :16:49.final, especially after a quad injury which is one of the most
:16:49. > :16:53.difficult to overcome. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce goes in the final of
:16:53. > :16:57.the semifinals which is just over my shoulder, you can see they are
:16:57. > :17:04.lining up on the track, getting ready for this, she will no about
:17:04. > :17:08.that race, and she will know that 11 seconds was set, they will want to
:17:08. > :17:14.be one of the fastest losers, and it puts added pressure on to these
:17:14. > :17:20.girls. Not in the mind of this young lady! She is fierce. She is very
:17:20. > :17:24.confident and I think she will know what she has to do. She is
:17:24. > :17:30.experienced, a double Olympic champion so she is ready to go.
:17:30. > :17:33.Let's hand down to Steve Cram. COMMENTATOR: Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
:17:33. > :17:37.looked very comfortable in qualification, and what does she
:17:37. > :17:42.have installed today? She will have just seen Carmelita Jeter run very
:17:42. > :17:46.well the and we have got the result from the second semifinal.
:17:46. > :17:56.Confirming that the two women were given the same time, Carmelita Jeter
:17:56. > :18:10.
:18:10. > :18:20.Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will be joined by a team-mate, Stewart,
:18:20. > :18:29.
:18:29. > :18:36.form as she was in last year. Pinto of Germany having a good year. She
:18:36. > :18:45.is sitting in the mixed zone in the steps, the fastest loser. Ivet
:18:45. > :18:52.Lalova, she qualified probably. But is not far of the season's best.
:18:52. > :18:54.Stewart, it was said back in 2008, Silver medal, it was looking that
:18:54. > :19:03.she might win it but Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce came through to take
:19:03. > :19:11.the victory. Anderson, the fourth American. Or to make it through
:19:11. > :19:16.here? Carmelita Jeter beating English Gardner, and English Gardner
:19:16. > :19:21.the fastest loser. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was the impressive one
:19:21. > :19:31.in qualification, the most impressive. Double Olympic champion.

:20:29. > :21:12.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:21:12. > :21:15.easy. That is head and shoulders above what we have seen so far.
:21:15. > :21:18.Fraser-Pryce cruised through the qualification round and that didn't
:21:18. > :21:25.look that much more difficult for her, a decent start, pretty good
:21:25. > :21:30.start but after that, it is serene sprinting. Steve, I don't even think
:21:30. > :21:35.she put her down onto the blocks. A reasonable reaction but nothing like
:21:35. > :21:39.we were next back but what we have seen this year, we have seen have
:21:39. > :21:43.holding on the speed endurance, giving her the opportunity to get

:22:20. > :22:26.for the final. Good, nice form. So solid and championships and I am
:22:26. > :22:32.wondering if all these women will be thinking to themselves, let's make
:22:32. > :22:38.it more than five women under 11 seconds, two equalled the men's

:22:42. > :22:48.in under 11 seconds, that was in a saga and I have a feeling that will

:24:05. > :24:11.GABBY LOGAN: Lavillenie will not worry too much, we saw him go for a

:24:35. > :24:43.sprinting, though. Will it now be Fraser-Pryce and Carmelita Jeter,
:24:43. > :24:48.the main two to watch? Those two are obviously two of the best in the

:25:12. > :25:17.a remote and she started running! There was no effort at all. It was
:25:18. > :25:21.unbelievable. This is like Usain Bolt where he runs for 30 minutes

:25:25. > :25:28.am not sure she put her foot down completely coming out of the blocks,
:25:28. > :25:33.this is textbook, a form is incredible, technique is flawless

:26:06. > :26:06.
:26:06. > :26:13.assume the mantle? I think that Jamaican was good, Carmelita Jeter
:26:13. > :26:18.as well and shutting down was still very impressive but I think the
:26:19. > :26:25.Jamaican could push for the silver against Carmelita Jeter. Shelly-Ann
:26:25. > :26:30.Fraser-Pryce, it is hers to lose but then these new sprinters, some of

:27:33. > :27:39.the result, she finished behind her illustrious team-mate. She just,

:30:15. > :30:25.
:30:25. > :30:35.World Championships, but it was second attempt. This is Bjorn Otto,
:30:35. > :30:44.
:30:44. > :30:49.first line says, if it wasn't for Reynold Lavillenie, this man would

:30:59. > :31:25.
:31:25. > :31:29.That was good, that will give him semi-finals next. Without LaShawn
:31:29. > :31:33.Merritt and Kirani James in the first heat, it's the second two that
:31:33. > :31:37.are the juiciest. There is nobody that can beat them, the two of them

:31:43. > :31:46.with One Show and Ohuruogu, they are the two to beat. There's a huge gap
:31:46. > :31:49.between Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt and the rest of the field.
:31:50. > :31:54.They are the only ones that are capable, the only once you've ever
:31:54. > :32:01.ran under 44 seconds. There's been a huge void in that event over the
:32:01. > :32:03.last few years, but for the fact that we have LaShawn Merritt and
:32:03. > :32:09.Kirani James. They make it interesting because they are quite
:32:09. > :32:14.evenly matched. They are both high 43s right now, that's what I'd
:32:14. > :32:21.expect on a really good day from either one of them. Both of them can
:32:21. > :32:26.much -- and much faster. They both have World Championships, they both
:32:26. > :32:30.have Olympic gold medals. They are both very nice guys from what I can
:32:30. > :32:34.tell. But they don't quite likely to that, I don't think. That's very
:32:34. > :32:39.good because it will bring out the best in both of them. Very nice guys
:32:39. > :32:45.both of them, very humble and great competitors. The only thing is, I
:32:45. > :32:50.would give, in all honesty, in terms of pure ability, I would give a
:32:50. > :32:54.slight edge to LaShawn Merritt, because he can run a very fast 200m.
:32:54. > :32:59.There is Kirani James is not a 200 runner. Kirani James's form, kind of
:32:59. > :33:03.like a hurdler we were talking about earlier, it's not quite tidy. But
:33:03. > :33:07.he's a great athlete and a great finisher and an incredible

:33:13. > :33:18.We haven't seen that. It will be a very interesting race. Neither of
:33:18. > :33:22.them are in the first heat. We do have one of the Borlee Brothers,
:33:22. > :33:32.Kevin, to look out for, and McQuay of the USA as well. Let's hand you
:33:32. > :33:42.
:33:42. > :33:48.the Belgian champion this year, bronze medallist at the World
:33:48. > :33:58.Championships two years ago. Henry cares has really started to emerge
:33:58. > :34:37.
:34:38. > :34:45.this year. Just missed out at the going to have to go some. Brian
:34:45. > :34:51.Gregan, like everybody here who is not amongst those big names, McQuay,
:34:51. > :34:58.Borlee, looking for perhaps a personal best out of this semifinal.
:34:58. > :35:08.The first two and the first -- two fastest for the semifinal. Nigel
:35:08. > :35:22.
:35:22. > :35:27.Levine goes in the third of the go out hard Lane eight and try and
:35:27. > :35:37.keep themselves involved in the race. It is Henriques who has
:35:37. > :35:44.
:35:44. > :35:54.started the quickest through the might put himself right in this as
:35:54. > :36:05.
:36:05. > :36:09.takes it, 44.61. That's a big personal best. I said he had to be
:36:09. > :36:16.much better, he looked really rabid in qualification. Maybe he will
:36:16. > :36:23.say, well, I needed that run to get it out of my system. But this man,
:36:23. > :36:28.out in lane eight, that is really, really impressive. I don't know if
:36:28. > :36:35.you know Masrahi very well, but that is a big run out in Lane eight.
:36:35. > :36:41.don't know him very well but his coach, John Smith, I know him very
:36:41. > :36:46.well. John Smith will coach an athlete to his best ability. This is
:36:46. > :36:51.very good running for Masrahi out in Lane eight. It is a very difficult
:36:51. > :36:57.lane to run from. He took it out very well for the first 200, then he
:36:57. > :37:02.relaxed. He checked to see where everyone else is will stop he will
:37:02. > :37:07.find out when he comes of this curb that he is in a decent position.
:37:07. > :37:12.Good running by McQuay, the American, who we have had lots of
:37:12. > :37:15.big hopes for over the past couple of years, but he didn't live up to
:37:15. > :37:21.that. Now he's coming back a bit. Not many people can say they ran
:37:21. > :37:27.their personal best out of Lane eight, and that is what he did here.
:37:28. > :37:35.Very good form, very efficient running. You can see there's not a
:37:35. > :37:38.lot of wasted motion here. You can see a bit of a shutdown right there,
:37:38. > :37:45.you wouldn't normally do that in the middle of the track, but in Lane
:37:45. > :37:47.eight that's the best thing to do. Now he just relaxes and brings it
:37:47. > :37:53.home. Very relaxed coming home because he has conserved. That tells
:37:53. > :37:56.me there may be a little bit more from him. They could be more from
:37:56. > :38:02.him and another personal best, which could put him in place for one of
:38:02. > :38:06.those medals. After Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt, it's pretty much
:38:06. > :38:16.open. Very impressive, a new national record for the American

:38:16. > :38:59.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:38:59. > :39:05.vault. Reynold Lavillenie has this my mind, he is still the favourite.
:39:05. > :39:09.That his younger brother, who has been eliminated. That shows you the
:39:09. > :39:19.sort of form that has taken him out to six metres plus this year. Brad
:39:19. > :39:22.
:39:22. > :39:32.Walker is a former world champion Cool, calm and collected celebration
:39:32. > :39:40.
:39:40. > :39:50.and looked down, you'd just see how high that is. We used to make the
:39:50. > :39:53.
:39:53. > :39:57.comparison to a double-decker bus, 400m later this evening. Already,
:39:57. > :40:02.many suggesting that tomorrow's final in the men's 400 will be a
:40:02. > :40:04.duel between this man, LaShawn Merritt, and Kirani James. That
:40:05. > :40:10.performance by Masrahi in the previous semifinal alters the
:40:10. > :40:20.complexion slightly, but realistic, Merritt and Kirani James are a
:40:20. > :41:00.
:41:00. > :41:05.strength in the 400 as they do in the shorter sprints. Jonathan Borlee

:43:23. > :43:28.automatically and the next two to take care, first two only to go
:43:28. > :43:31.through automatically. Jonathan Borlee going well around the bend.
:43:31. > :43:39.Borlee leads them into the home straight. LaShawn Merritt knows what
:43:39. > :43:43.he has to do. He eases up a gear. LaShawn Merritt comes through.
:43:43. > :43:51.Borlee now looking round. Chris Brown coming through to see and hope
:43:51. > :43:59.if he can make it through to the final. And officially, 44.61, a
:43:59. > :44:04.stroll for LaShawn Merritt. Michael Johnson is watching, what did you
:44:04. > :44:11.make of this? A very controlled race with LaShawn Merritt out in Lane
:44:11. > :44:16.six. This is really hard way to do it. You mentioned about this point
:44:16. > :44:21.in the race, he is a 200 metre runner, so he could run the first
:44:21. > :44:25.200 a little quicker, making it easy on himself in the home stretch. I'm
:44:25. > :44:30.not sure I'm crazy about the way he ran this race, but some athletes
:44:30. > :44:35.really struggle with how to run the race in the rounds, when they know
:44:35. > :44:40.they can win the race either way. He knows he can but at this point he's
:44:40. > :44:46.got Borlee out in front of him. Now he's got a bit of work to do. This
:44:46. > :44:50.takes more energy, to have to pick up a gear with 100 to go, than it
:44:50. > :44:54.does to be able to just shut it down when you are ahead and just cruise
:44:54. > :44:59.on for the finish line. LaShawn Merritt will be in good shape for
:44:59. > :45:07.the final tomorrow. He knows he will have his work cut out for him. He
:45:07. > :45:13.got a good start. I would have cut that pace. I would have liked to
:45:13. > :45:18.have seen him keep pace at 200m. Sometimes he has a little bit below
:45:18. > :45:25.knee lift, and that concerns me as well. I think he can get a lot more
:45:25. > :45:30.power out of that, would you do see in him when he runs the 200m. Very
:45:30. > :45:35.relaxed here. He's a very powerful athlete, and that's what makes him
:45:35. > :45:39.so great. An incredible combination of speed and strength. I think
:45:39. > :45:42.LaShawn Merritt will be happy with that, but I think his coach will
:45:42. > :45:52.definitely want him to run a different strategy in the final
:45:52. > :46:16.
:46:16. > :46:23.final, you against Kirani James, is that how you are viewing it? I have
:46:23. > :46:33.my spots now! He's coming up and there will be six other men in
:46:33. > :46:56.
:46:56. > :46:59.tonight which is disappointing, still going to be some cracking
:46:59. > :47:02.athletics in both the track and the field here. The pole vault continues
:47:02. > :47:04.and Augusto de Oliveira, he has got a problem, took three attempts to
:47:04. > :47:08.get 5.50. He has had his third and final attempt. The South American
:47:09. > :47:14.record-holder. And somebody who will just be coming into their prime when

:47:24. > :47:31.
:47:31. > :47:41.who have cleared 5.65, only one athlete has been eliminated, and
:47:41. > :47:41.

:47:48. > :47:57.Yamamoto of Japan, a few first-time clearances and that is far too many

:48:01. > :48:06.From where this camera is sitting, it is directly opposite the finish

:48:22. > :48:25.
:48:25. > :48:27.well. On the inside will be the Costa Rican and then Armen Hall who
:48:27. > :48:37.was only forth in the semifinal and finished third in the final so

:25:53. > :25:54.
:25:54. > :26:34.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:26:34. > :26:39.said if there is a favourite, it is this man, the reigning European and
:26:39. > :26:49.Olympic champion. He has got a winning streak going way back some
:26:49. > :26:49.
:26:49. > :26:59.time now. That is a cracking start. We did not see any throws over 80
:26:59. > :27:09.metres in qualification, but we have got one-hour. He has the best
:27:09. > :27:11.
:27:11. > :27:18.throw in the world to his credit this year. 7.26 kg the hammer ways.
:27:18. > :27:28.He has made that look very easy indeed. That is going to be hard to
:27:28. > :27:28.
:27:28. > :29:00.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:29:00. > :29:07.is all about that time. Brianne Theisen Eaton is going to take it.
:29:08. > :29:14.She delivered according to form. She is a very good runner. She is
:29:14. > :29:24.going to be in a good position. He will have been doing a bit of
:29:24. > :29:50.
:29:50. > :29:55.commentary for her American the 1000 points barrier, which
:29:55. > :29:59.Jessica Ennis-Hill achieved last year in London in this event.
:29:59. > :30:02.Dipping under 23 seconds. In the final heat, Katarina
:30:02. > :30:12.Johnson-Thompson. She lines up in lane six. She's lying in 14th place
:30:12. > :30:30.
:30:30. > :30:40.attempt. This man does it as well. Germany are really taking a
:30:40. > :30:49.
:30:49. > :30:59.stranglehold on this final. Lying in first and second place now.
:30:59. > :31:24.
:31:24. > :31:29.Lavillenie is still not clear at relief to get there. He certainly is
:31:29. > :31:33.capable, having gone over six metres quite a few times this season.
:31:33. > :31:43.Lavillenie is in the hunt for the medals, but he's got a bit of work
:31:43. > :32:16.
:32:16. > :32:26.the world this year! That really has a new lifetime best. It's the
:32:26. > :32:40.
:32:40. > :32:48.longest throw in the world in 2013. interesting situation as we lead
:32:48. > :32:53.into heat number five of this 200m. We did see Theisen Eaton do very
:32:53. > :32:58.well in that last heat, so something for Katarina Johnson-Thompson and
:32:58. > :33:07.the rest to chase. Absolutely. Her team will have really lifted her
:33:07. > :33:12.after a very disappointing shot put. She is, on paper, the fastest person
:33:12. > :33:15.in this heat. She's going to have to prove it because this is the point
:33:15. > :33:23.where she needs to stay in contention, she's lying in 14th
:33:23. > :33:26.place. She knows she has to stay in touch here. Dafne Schippers, of the
:33:26. > :33:36.Netherlands, is actually the fasters. She's the only athlete in
:33:36. > :34:00.
:34:00. > :34:03.the field who's been under 23 She decided to come here not to
:34:03. > :34:08.contest the sprints, where she is obviously very good at 200, too. But
:34:09. > :34:14.to go for a heptathlon. You cannot blame her for that. Disappointing
:34:14. > :34:20.that these and back has withdrawn, because it means there's a huge gap
:34:20. > :34:26.between Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dafne Schippers. Katarina just
:34:26. > :34:32.has to be patient. Tyminska finished in fourth place, out of the medals,
:34:32. > :34:42.just, two years ago. It was Chernova of Russia who was the champion their
:34:42. > :35:10.
:35:10. > :35:17.will stop ahead of Jessica blocks on the outside. The Dutch
:35:17. > :35:22.athlete going well. But Katarina Johnson-Thompson is keeping pace. So
:35:22. > :35:27.is Ellen Sprunger, of Switzerland. Look at Schippers flying down the
:35:27. > :35:32.home straight. Johnson-Thompson gaining ground on the Swiss athlete.
:35:32. > :35:36.A great finish by Katarina Johnson-Thompson. A good time, 22.84
:35:36. > :35:41.by Dafne Schippers. That is a cracking time. By far and away the
:35:41. > :35:44.fastest we've seen so far. I just wonder, Andrew, whether Katarina
:35:44. > :35:51.Johnson-Thompson can come away with a new lifetime best from this last
:35:51. > :35:55.event on day one. It was good to get a measure of Schippers outside her.
:35:55. > :35:59.Diniz Lou was watching this, this was a very good one. I think we will
:35:59. > :36:03.see the time from Johnson-Thompson might be pretty impressive. It's
:36:03. > :36:07.just what she needed. I'm amazed she managed to hold their head. It's so
:36:07. > :36:12.difficult for these ladies. With lane seven being empty, she really
:36:12. > :36:16.had to keep discipline here. Schippers is the fastest person in
:36:16. > :36:23.this race. She just had to have her in her sights. I'm sure that's a
:36:23. > :36:30.great personal best from Katarina, a job well done from her. She's a very
:36:30. > :36:33.rangy runner, very quick over this distance. But it's so important that
:36:33. > :36:40.you keep the relaxation going. She runs a good turn, she's clearly
:36:40. > :36:50.focused and ready to strike, and she does. She doesn't lose her form.
:36:50. > :36:55.
:36:55. > :37:01.Lovely, rangy running. She knew that Katarina Johnson-Thompson has
:37:01. > :37:09.run a new lifetime best, 23.37. She moves way up the table into sixth
:37:09. > :37:15.place to stop thankfully, she's downstairs with Phil.
:37:15. > :37:20.I'm happy, a personal best. I couldn't see the board, I didn't
:37:20. > :37:26.know I came second. I didn't know where I was until someone shouted of
:37:26. > :37:33.me. What about the overall performance of the day? I've been
:37:33. > :37:43.really disappointed throughout the day. In the hurdles, I had 13.48,
:37:43. > :37:49.today I got 13.49. The high jump, I got over it but my hair knocked the
:37:49. > :37:54.back, I will have to get it all chopped off now! I just had
:37:54. > :37:57.flashbacks of last year, seeing the same sort of outcome, doing well and
:37:57. > :38:06.then dropping low in the rankings and having to bring it back in the
:38:06. > :38:09.200 and 100. I'm just happy with finishing off an APB. Hopefully
:38:09. > :38:19.there's more to follow in the long jump tomorrow. We wish you well for
:38:19. > :38:23.
:38:23. > :38:26.the second day. We will talk more last night from the States and you
:38:26. > :38:34.missed the lightning bolt, but a second visit for Usain Bolt for his
:38:34. > :38:38.medal ceremony. He will never get tired of this. No, he won't. This is
:38:38. > :38:42.what he gets up for. He likes winning championships and it is his
:38:42. > :38:45.motivation. He has said in the past is our objective is to win as many
:38:46. > :38:51.championships as he can. He said many years ago that he wanted to be
:38:51. > :38:55.mentioned alongside the likes of Carl Lewis and myself as well.
:38:55. > :39:00.You've got to win many championships to do that, and that is exactly what
:39:00. > :39:05.he's doing. I believe he also kind of takes a little bit of motivation
:39:05. > :39:09.from the early-season, when people start to doubt him a little bit
:39:09. > :39:13.because of injuries or he just hasn't been as sharp in his training
:39:13. > :39:23.and maybe he loses a race here or there. I think that we provide a
:39:23. > :39:23.
:39:23. > :40:34.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:40:34. > :40:39.in the relay and the 200. There's always talk in the past that maybe
:40:39. > :40:44.he'd go back to what he ran as a boy, which was the 400. Can you ever
:40:44. > :40:49.see him moving up? I really don't see it. I've talked with them
:40:49. > :40:53.personally about that. I told myself that I would love to see him run it,
:40:53. > :40:57.I think it could be the first person to hold the world record at 100, 200
:40:57. > :41:01.and 400. He said, that's nice, but I don't think I'll be doing that. We
:41:01. > :41:05.just doesn't want to train for the 400, which is smart on his part to
:41:05. > :41:08.understand that. It's not something he really wants to do and his heart
:41:08. > :41:15.wouldn't be in it, so he really wouldn't give it his all and
:41:15. > :41:18.probably wouldn't have success. If someday he has a change of heart and
:41:18. > :41:22.decides to take up the 400, I think it would be unbelievable to watch
:41:22. > :41:27.him run 400m. I think he could go in there under 43 seconds, it would be
:41:27. > :41:32.phenomenal. The reason he moved down to 100 was because he didn't like
:41:32. > :41:36.the training for 400. He thought, if I can be a champion and I have to be
:41:36. > :41:41.out on the track for a short time, I'll do just that. It's incredible
:41:41. > :41:46.to have that kind of talent, oh, to have those choices in your life!
:41:46. > :41:51.He's one of the best out there and has been talented since he was 15.
:41:51. > :41:56.He's always had this as his destiny. He wanted to be the greatest. So
:41:56. > :42:01.far, he's proved that he is over the 100 and the 200. But to do the 400,
:42:01. > :42:04.why would you unless you were going to be at the heights? He's doing
:42:04. > :42:09.great right now. It's just whether he can maintain and give us those
:42:09. > :42:13.quick times, which I'm sure we would all like to see. Keep resetting his
:42:13. > :42:17.goals, keep refocusing, keep enjoying the training that it takes
:42:17. > :42:25.and the butane and the lifestyle and everything else that you sacrifice.
:42:25. > :42:28.I wondered about that because you talk about keep resetting goals.
:42:28. > :42:30.What are the goals for Usain Bolt? He comes out and he wins another
:42:30. > :42:34.world championship and another Olympic gold medal. I wonder where
:42:34. > :42:39.the motivation was going to come from. But I think he enjoys being
:42:39. > :42:43.the entertainer on this stage so much that that is his motivation. He
:42:43. > :42:47.likes to come out here in front of a great crowd and put on a show. That
:42:47. > :42:50.is what he does. I think that has become his motivation. To my
:42:50. > :42:54.surprise, because I didn't think that would be enough. I thought he
:42:55. > :43:00.would have to find some new goals and probably change events. But I
:43:00. > :43:03.think he can certainly do this through real. It would be great to
:43:03. > :43:09.have him in real. Three consecutive Olympic gold would be the aim for
:43:09. > :43:17.him. That is a great goal to aim for. Christine Ohuruogu is aiming to
:43:17. > :43:21.reclaim the world title. She won it six years ago now. She got the
:43:21. > :43:26.silver last year at the Olympic Games in London. She just knows how
:43:26. > :43:29.to peek at the big times. She doesn't really care around the
:43:29. > :43:36.season if she's not getting everything, it's the big races,
:43:36. > :43:39.peaking in the championships. She has had a different approach to
:43:39. > :43:43.the 2013 season, where she has been on the Diamond League a little bit
:43:44. > :43:51.more than normally does. But she has had such a roller-coaster since she
:43:51. > :43:56.won in 2007 in Osaka. But she is in great shape now. We saw her go under
:43:56. > :44:00.50 seconds almost effortlessly. I'm really optimistic for her. She has
:44:00. > :44:06.got to run the race of her life, which means possibly a British
:44:06. > :44:11.record to win. She has beaten on show in Birmingham this year, she
:44:11. > :44:21.knows how to beat her main rival. Will she execute the plan right
:44:21. > :44:23.
:44:23. > :44:30.tonight? Let's hand now to each other for ten years now. 2004
:44:30. > :44:33.Olympics, Christine made the semifinal, Montsho went there as her
:44:33. > :44:39.country's first-ever female Olympian in Athens. They've been intertwined
:44:39. > :44:42.ever since. Christine won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in
:44:42. > :44:47.2006. One Show only made the semifinal of that occasion.
:44:47. > :44:54.Christine came back and won the world title in 2007 in Osaka, in
:44:54. > :44:59.that brilliant race. She passed Williams-Mills in the last couple of
:44:59. > :45:08.strides. Then it was the Olympic gold medal for Christine Ohuruogu in
:45:08. > :45:14.2008. Then onto the scene came Richard Ross. In 2011 it was a. The
:45:14. > :45:19.Christine in the first round. Montreux stepped up and took the
:45:19. > :45:29.title, took the world title which she currently holds. Last year,
:45:29. > :45:46.
:45:46. > :45:52.Richard Ross, the Olympic title, them. Amantle Montsho is the pride
:45:52. > :46:02.of third-country. She spends a lot of time training in Senegal, but it
:46:02. > :46:24.
:46:24. > :46:34.is Botts won a's flag she will be the best preparation. She had to
:46:34. > :46:36.
:46:36. > :46:42.pull out in Monaco. She pulled out with 200m to go. Stephanie
:46:42. > :46:49.McPherson, 49.992 qualified. Only the second time she has been under
:46:49. > :46:54.50 seconds. Natasha Hastings is the American champion, from New York.
:46:54. > :46:59.She finally realised her a goal to become the American champion.
:46:59. > :47:05.Christine Ohuruogu has been our number one for a long time. I
:47:05. > :47:13.mention some of her highlights, Olympic gold medal, Olympic silver
:47:13. > :47:23.medal. She will be chasing Amantle Montsho who has been the dominant
:47:23. > :47:23.
:47:23. > :47:28.force in 400m running this year. Francina Macrory almost to a medal
:47:28. > :47:38.in day go. Was run down in the last 30 metres when it seemed the bronze
:47:38. > :47:59.
:47:59. > :48:05.was hers. Cesar near reserve a, a times. We know that Christian will
:48:05. > :48:10.finish fast, but will she be close enough to put Amantle Montsho under
:48:10. > :48:20.pressure in the home straight? The British record is still held by
:48:20. > :48:22.
:48:22. > :48:32.Kathy Cook, 49.43. Amantle Montsho's best is 49.33. Both of
:48:32. > :48:33.
:48:33. > :48:41.them completely dominant in qualifying for this final. The
:48:41. > :48:51.supreme, big-time competitor. She saves her best for global finals.
:48:51. > :49:13.
:49:13. > :49:22.She saves her best for when medals Ohuruogu will be able to see the
:49:22. > :49:27.back of Amantle Montsho. Hastings was incredibly quick through the
:49:27. > :49:37.first 100m. A man claimed Wanchope is shifting the gears up through
:49:37. > :49:45.the back straight. Amantle Montsho star has not stamped her authority
:49:45. > :49:55.on this final yet. Amantle Montsho comes to the fore. Christine of
:49:55. > :50:11.
:50:11. > :50:19.was not there. Five metres to go and she was not there. Three metres
:50:19. > :50:24.to go and she was not there. Did she get it? We are waiting. She is
:50:24. > :50:33.looking and we are looking. The photo-finish will be the only thing
:50:33. > :50:40.that can determine this. She smiles. The two of them are pretty good
:50:40. > :50:46.friends and they know each other so well. She has got it! A new
:50:46. > :50:53.national record. Another gold medal. Christine Ohuruogu is the world
:50:53. > :51:03.champion again. Amantle Montsho cannot believe it. She never gives
:51:03. > :51:03.
:51:03. > :51:11.up. Every single stride, every sinew straining. Every breath
:51:11. > :51:21.Council, write to the very end. Kathy Cook's record finally goes as
:51:21. > :51:22.
:51:22. > :51:28.well. Like the rest of us up she would have been on her feet. It
:51:28. > :51:33.could not have been closer, it could not have been tighter. We
:51:33. > :51:40.have had some pretty close races in past years, but this was even
:51:40. > :51:44.tighter. I think Amantle Montsho thought she had got it. She leaned
:51:44. > :51:49.back on the line, but Christine Ohuruogu did not give that up.
:51:49. > :51:59.Michael Johnson, have you ever seen a race like that in a championship
:51:59. > :52:04.final? It was such a great division. Every 400m runner knows that
:52:04. > :52:08.Christine Ohuruogu is going to be dangerous on the home straight. I
:52:08. > :52:18.did not know why Amantle Montsho did not know that on the finish
:52:18. > :52:20.
:52:20. > :52:26.line. She does this every time. She bites her time, she is very patient.
:52:26. > :52:31.Natasha Hastings had a quick start. Christine is in her usual position.
:52:31. > :52:40.Now the strength takes over. Amantle Montsho looks good, but
:52:40. > :52:44.Christine Ohuruogu is stronger on the home straight. It was all about
:52:44. > :52:49.leaning at the finish. Christine Ohuruogu has taken advantage so
:52:49. > :52:53.many times when others have made mistakes. She runs the best race
:52:53. > :52:59.she can possibly run at the time and that is the consistency it
:52:59. > :53:09.takes to be a champion and a medallist over and over again. Run
:53:09. > :53:10.
:53:10. > :53:20.your best race at the championships. A great race by her. She will have
:53:20. > :53:21.
:53:21. > :53:30.to be extremely proud of this race. A very nice run by Christine.
:53:30. > :53:35.Michael, or as in Great Britain we have got many great athletes. There
:53:35. > :53:41.must be a place in the all-time greats of British athletics now for
:53:41. > :53:46.Christine Ohuruogu. An Olympic gold medal, an Olympic silver medal and
:53:46. > :53:52.now two or world championship gold medals. Have we ever had a better
:53:52. > :53:56.exponent? Have we ever had any body better at coming on the big bay and
:53:56. > :54:00.producing their best performance just when it is required? Have we
:54:00. > :54:10.ever had any one better at coming down the home straight and not
:54:10. > :54:12.
:54:12. > :54:15.giving up? You have to go to the line. Christine had incredible
:54:15. > :54:23.desire and incredible belief and she thought she might just get
:54:23. > :54:31.there. Amantle Montsho lost the gold medal. It was a fraction of a
:54:32. > :54:39.second. I think we knew before Christine did. It came up on the
:54:39. > :54:44.computer. I'd just had a feeling, you always look for the momentum,
:54:44. > :54:49.but I was not sure, and then the smile came across her face. Of all
:54:49. > :54:59.the great finishes, that was the greatest. Amantle Montsho was
:54:59. > :55:09.looking at the big screen. Christine was leaning and it was
:55:09. > :55:09.
:55:09. > :55:49.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:55:49. > :55:58.good enough. An incredible finish. That was wonderful. He is
:55:58. > :56:03.continuing the purple patch. He just keeps going and going. The
:56:03. > :56:10.perfect day for one of the youngest men in the final. Raphael Holzdeppe
:56:10. > :56:16.of Germany has really taken this by the scruff of its neck. Stanley
:56:17. > :56:26.Malte Mohr has attempted it so far. There are five of them all together,
:56:26. > :56:32.but he was the first to go clear. She is trying to take the gold
:56:32. > :56:39.medal away from Valerie Adams of New Zealand. She needed a throw
:56:39. > :56:45.well in excess of 20 metres, she has done it, but it is not as far
:56:45. > :56:51.as 20.80, which Valerie Adams achieved earlier on. But this could
:56:51. > :57:01.be a new lifetime best for the German. A European Cup winner a
:57:01. > :57:07.
:57:07. > :57:15.couple of years ago. It was a new lifetime best. Nobody could touch
:57:15. > :57:21.her in the end. Celebrations will go on, I bet, until tomorrow
:57:21. > :57:31.morning. New Zealand have only ever one four gold medals in
:57:31. > :57:32.
:57:32. > :57:40.championship history. 1997, the discus. And for Valerie Adams it is
:57:40. > :57:50.her 4th gold medal. Nobody has ever done that before. Absolutely
:57:50. > :57:52.
:57:52. > :58:02.phenomenal. That was a magnificent throw by the German. That was a

:27:36. > :27:42.get a chance two days after Mo Farah's medal to hear the national
:27:42. > :27:46.anthem wants more of. This is a wonderful moment. Like Denise and a
:27:46. > :27:56.lot of other athletes, we all feel Christine sometimes does not get
:27:56. > :27:59.the respect she deserves. Lots of other athletes in times court the
:27:59. > :28:09.media a bit more and it is not something she has been comfortable
:28:09. > :28:12.
:28:12. > :28:18.with. But to everyone she is a fantastic role model. It is
:28:18. > :28:22.fantastic to be able to commentate on great races, especially when it
:28:22. > :28:32.has got somebody like Christine in it. If that does not get their
:28:32. > :28:32.
:28:32. > :28:42.hair's standing up on the back of your neck, I do not month what will.
:28:42. > :28:48.
:28:48. > :28:52.She talked about leaving nothing behind. She wanted or her team
:28:52. > :29:02.members to do that. That is what she did today and she left nothing
:29:02. > :29:06.
:29:06. > :29:10.behind. That was a good performance from her. In the outside lane her
:29:10. > :29:14.chances were difficult, but she finished really strong year. The
:29:14. > :29:19.defending world champion must have thought it was going to be another
:29:19. > :29:27.world title. As she approached the line, even when she crossed the
:29:27. > :29:30.line, I think she thought she had one. Leaning back providing a small
:29:30. > :29:40.window of opportunity which Christine Ohuruogu jumped straight
:29:40. > :29:40.
:29:40. > :29:46.through. Commonwealth gold medal, an Olympic gold medal and an
:29:46. > :29:52.Olympic silver medal, but now the first British woman ever to win two
:29:52. > :29:59.world titles. Christine Ohuruogu is the world champion again and is
:29:59. > :30:08.also now the British record holder. One of Britain's greatest athletes
:30:08. > :30:13.ever. An emotional moment for her. We have had some great moments from
:30:13. > :30:23.Christine. This has to rank right up there with that Olympic title in
:30:23. > :30:23.
:30:23. > :31:19.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:31:19. > :31:27.how much it means to all of the athletes, of course, and for
:31:27. > :31:32.Christine, a sweet moment. She is good friends with Montsho, their
:31:32. > :31:40.careers have intertwined, starting together back in the Athens Olympics
:31:40. > :31:46.back in 2004. But, goodness me, that was close. Four thousandths of a
:31:46. > :31:52.second that she won it by. I didn't know and she did know for a little
:31:52. > :31:59.while and looking at the screen and there is the reaction. And that is
:31:59. > :32:06.typical of Christine, her first thought is for the woman she has
:32:06. > :32:11.beaten. A gold medal, wow, two for Great Britain now. What a night.
:32:11. > :32:14.GABBY LOGAN: We are joined by Colin Jackson in here, I will come to you
:32:14. > :32:20.first, because we have not spoken to you about this, seeing the relief
:32:20. > :32:24.and emotional Christine, the wonderful show from Montsho when she
:32:24. > :32:28.goes, wow. The rocket of Christine Ohuruogu came when it added. She did
:32:28. > :32:32.not give up, that is the most important thing, she kept driving
:32:32. > :32:39.for the line and look at the actual photo finish, Montsho's hips are
:32:39. > :32:46.about 30 centimetres in front of Christine. Montsho glided through,
:32:46. > :32:49.and it is about 400m, not 399.5. have a great interview with Montsho
:32:49. > :32:54.from Phil Jones and he asked her about her relationship with
:32:54. > :32:57.Christine and she said, I don't get on with any of the other girls which
:32:57. > :33:00.was very candid but Christine is such a lovely person and that
:33:00. > :33:05.embrace at the end, it is not just Montsho who believes that, she's
:33:05. > :33:08.clearly loved amongst the British athletes as well. She is such a nice
:33:09. > :33:14.person and the captain of the great British as well. When it happens to
:33:14. > :33:20.the good guys, it feels even better, doesn't it, Denise? It inspires
:33:20. > :33:25.everybody to go that extra bit, those extra four thousandths of a
:33:25. > :33:31.second to get the job done. And she has been through a lot but she has
:33:32. > :33:35.never given up, she still wants to do the best she can and, as Steve
:33:35. > :33:45.said, she does not get involved in a lot of extracurricular activities
:33:45. > :33:55.
:33:55. > :33:58.and commercial activities, she is a true professional of the sport, she
:33:58. > :34:00.has studied at what she has had to do to get this performance out of
:34:00. > :34:03.herself and she executed perfectly. Another one here with a sibling
:34:03. > :34:05.hair, her sister may be used in the relays and in the trials, she was
:34:05. > :34:08.nervously watching her sister's performance, and they will all be
:34:08. > :34:11.watching this in the family and enjoying this as well. And she is
:34:11. > :34:14.taking it all in and absorbing it. I think Phil Jones has got her again!
:34:14. > :34:18.We have indeed. Fresh from the medal ceremony. How was it for you, I have
:34:18. > :34:27.never seen you like that before. don't know what to say. I think I am
:34:27. > :34:33.yet to pass out! Matt Harvey" the medal. For me, it is hard that it
:34:33. > :34:43.has been great -- let's have a look at the medal. I needed a national
:34:43. > :34:43.
:34:43. > :34:47.record to cement my 400 metre crown. I am so happy, and that PB was long
:34:47. > :34:53.overdue and it has been such a hard three days. I told my coach earlier
:34:53. > :35:01.today, I thought I was going mad. You go for a whole load of emotions
:35:01. > :35:09.that you can't quite explain, it is so weird. It is not very nice! But
:35:09. > :35:16.thank God I... To God, be the glory, that is what got me through. It kept
:35:16. > :35:21.me sane and my sister is here so I will celebrate with her afterwards.
:35:21. > :35:28.It has been a wonderful occasion for us all, your family especially.
:35:28. > :35:35.and I am so happy. I don't know what to say, it is really hard, I am just
:35:35. > :35:40.so grateful and thankful... I don't know! I think your emotion say it
:35:40. > :35:47.all, Christine, thanks for talking to us. We can bring in another
:35:47. > :35:57.champion... Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, brilliant performance,
:35:57. > :35:58.
:35:58. > :36:06.what a victory, what a marginal victory. I had my strategy, in the
:36:06. > :36:16.heats, and I have a pain in my left butt cheek! It was really hurting
:36:16. > :36:20.but I knew I worked for and I just executed. I was really focused on
:36:20. > :36:24.that, just execution not on anybody else. Nobody would have guessed you
:36:24. > :36:29.had injury, you were so consummate in the semifinal and then to do it
:36:29. > :36:33.again in the final. That is what the champion is and I am surrounded by
:36:33. > :36:40.great people, my coach, my manager, my masseuse and everybody who played
:36:40. > :36:45.a part in team MVP will stop I was really nervous about feeling the
:36:45. > :36:48.pain and Mike coach was saying block it out and he will be fine. I am
:36:48. > :36:53.ready and grateful for the opportunity to come here and be my
:36:53. > :36:56.best and actually win. Wonderful, wonderful moment for you and I am
:36:56. > :37:03.sure there are many more for you in your career. Thank you for talking
:37:03. > :37:13.to us. Thank you. There is Valerie Adams, head and shoulders above the
:37:13. > :37:13.
:37:13. > :38:08.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 57 seconds
:38:08. > :38:11.rest receiving her gold and for New Switzerland and she spends a lot of
:38:11. > :38:15.time which comes over from New Zealand and how nice that you gets
:38:15. > :38:20.her medal ceremony after Ostapchuk denied her that moment in London but
:38:21. > :38:24.was subsequently banned for taking drugs and Valerie Adams never got
:38:24. > :38:29.that moment at the other big games last year so she is enjoying this
:38:29. > :38:39.one. We have had a whirlwind 20 minutes, it has been like... Never
:38:39. > :38:39.
:38:39. > :38:48.mind, super Saturday, 'Mazing Monday! What about manic Monday?
:38:48. > :38:56.Shelley praise is Friday -- Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. I think she
:38:56. > :39:00.called it her buttock cheeks. I don't know if it works with me.
:39:00. > :39:04.you know what was interesting, I am so glad she kept her hair colour
:39:04. > :39:09.that she told you that she was going to wear in Paris. You asked her,
:39:09. > :39:13.what colour your happy and she said thing. She has added to it, it is
:39:13. > :39:15.more pink. She has other hairdressing salon in Jamaica, you
:39:16. > :39:22.can get your hair done, a free advert. There are other hairdressers
:39:22. > :39:28.of course! They will make you run faster. She is built perfectly
:39:28. > :39:31.without the hair from what Michael is saying. We have not had time to
:39:31. > :39:36.review the hurdles so perfect that you have come along, Colin. We have
:39:36. > :39:40.a champion but we were not predicting, Aries Merritt, the man
:39:40. > :39:45.in form from last year, and the world record, coming into this
:39:45. > :39:47.season but all change at the top. would be eight struggle for him from
:39:47. > :39:54.the off because right at the beginning of the year, he struggled
:39:54. > :39:59.with his hamstring and he was always searching for that fast performance.
:39:59. > :40:03.When you're looking for that and then you lose it, it moves away from
:40:03. > :40:07.you and you pine for this opportunity to get into the speed
:40:07. > :40:16.and Aries was always pushing for that, and that is where he suffered.
:40:16. > :40:20.COMMENTATOR: Oliver the quickest, and alongside him Andrew Riley from
:40:20. > :40:24.Jamaica, which is in trying to get in there but it is Oliver powering
:40:24. > :40:31.his way through. Oliver comes through to take it, second place,
:40:31. > :40:36.Ryan Wilson but David Oliver finally gets his hands on the World
:40:36. > :40:40.Championship gold and an emphatic, overpowering victory for this
:40:40. > :40:44.powerful American. It was not Aries Merritt, it was not Jason
:40:44. > :40:54.Richardson, the defending champion, it was David Oliver who becomes
:40:54. > :40:57.
:40:57. > :41:03.shoulders, how did that sound? great, man. It has been a long time
:41:03. > :41:07.coming, lots of injuries but now I have got a cup to perform. It has
:41:07. > :41:14.been a long process and sacrifice and I am happy to be representing
:41:14. > :41:18.the USA and hear the national anthem later on. It is one thing to want to
:41:18. > :41:21.have it but then to deliver it, a world winning time when it mattered
:41:21. > :41:24.the most. Yes, it feels great to perform when you are capable of
:41:24. > :41:29.doing it. Is that of running around like a donkey for a couple of
:41:29. > :41:33.years! You just want to enjoy some success, man. I was able to come
:41:33. > :41:39.through tonight and it was great competition, everybody ran well,
:41:39. > :41:41.great to see Ryan who went away more than I did, 32 years old, made his
:41:41. > :41:47.first heat and got a silver medal at the World Championships, it is a
:41:47. > :41:51.big, big time opportunity for him. You have been through a lot, you
:41:51. > :41:56.were invincible and now you are back on top of the world. I feel that I
:41:56. > :41:59.am one of the best hurdler is out there and I have been healthy for a
:41:59. > :42:01.whole season and I was a little rough at the beginning but now
:42:01. > :42:07.things are coming together and now it is time to decompress, enjoy the
:42:07. > :42:10.rest of the season. I love being in Europe, I know it is not my
:42:10. > :42:14.birthright to be a professional athlete so I enjoy every moment,
:42:14. > :42:19.even when things are not going so well but when they are going well, I
:42:19. > :42:21.have to enjoy it even more. Enjoy the night and the ceremony. Thank
:42:21. > :42:25.you. GABBY LOGAN: There he is, the new
:42:25. > :42:31.world champion, Colin. We said it before in the semifinals. The
:42:31. > :42:35.variety of techniques and body shapes in the hurdles and he is a
:42:35. > :42:43.big guy but he glides and tonight, everything went well for him.
:42:43. > :42:49.shed a couple of pounds. About 7-macro, and he is a big, strong
:42:49. > :42:54.guy. And he gets into this rolling technique. When he snakes over the
:42:54. > :42:58.barrier, the whole weight goes forward and that is what increases
:42:58. > :43:01.his tempo and he is excellent at that. When he is in the groove, he
:43:01. > :43:06.is hard to beat because all the forces are going in the right
:43:06. > :43:12.direction. That is exactly what Will Sharman said the opposite happens to
:43:12. > :43:16.him. A not too Will Sharman, because our stats man has pointed out that
:43:16. > :43:19.he joins Tony Jarrett as the only Brit to have made three successive
:43:20. > :43:26.World Championship finals. Do you think that he is having a dig at
:43:26. > :43:36.you? I think so but don't worry about it, I know where he sleeps!
:43:36. > :43:38.
:43:38. > :43:45.You do have the two G Bloom. It was only a battle for silver and bronze
:43:45. > :43:49.because your description was she will press the buttons, and price.
:43:49. > :43:55.-- Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. She looked so good. That speaks to the
:43:55. > :43:58.confidence of her. When you have one that many championships and as long
:43:58. > :44:01.as she executes correctly, she will probably win the race because nobody
:44:01. > :44:08.can match up. And we see it right here, it is unbelievable. The
:44:08. > :44:14.execution of this race, she did not do anything wrong, nothing was
:44:14. > :44:18.average, everything was excellent from start to finish. And what is so
:44:18. > :44:25.amazing to me, about her when we see her here when she is unbelievable
:44:25. > :44:30.the talent and execution of race, her joy. Her joy, this was the first
:44:30. > :44:35.championship she has ever won, you would think to look at her, she is
:44:35. > :44:45.so relaxed on the start line and she is then so excited after the race,
:44:45. > :45:11.
:45:12. > :45:16.just a joy to see her performing and Everyone seems to come back at her.
:45:16. > :45:22.Is it a good sign for the tour hundred? That did not happen today,
:45:22. > :45:28.she established a gap and maintained it. She said this year
:45:29. > :45:35.she is starting to embrace the 200m. She thinks she may be a better 200m
:45:35. > :45:39.runner up. She shied away from it initially, so it will be
:45:39. > :45:45.interesting to see what happens later in the week. That is ominous
:45:45. > :45:48.for the rest of the field will stop it is quite worrying. The guys have
:45:48. > :45:55.said it will pull start I would like to emphasise the range of
:45:55. > :46:00.emotions we have had tonight there are stuck you have seen the
:46:00. > :46:04.ecstatic Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce reaction. Christine's emotions
:46:04. > :46:11.which was disbelief that she is there again for a stark after
:46:11. > :46:20.Amantle Montsho's dominance. beat her in Birmingham. She had
:46:20. > :46:30.that at the back of her mind. I know how to beat her. Another man
:46:30. > :46:31.
:46:31. > :46:35.that came back and he looked like he was beaten this season. That was
:46:35. > :46:45.a hard stop it. We have not even got a float of him. Shall we relive
:46:45. > :47:01.
:47:01. > :47:09.Now Amantle Montsho is shifting through the gears. Christine
:47:09. > :47:15.Ohuruogu will have to stay in contact. Round the pub then.
:47:15. > :47:21.Amantle Montsho has not stamped her a 30 or and this yet. Hastings has
:47:21. > :47:29.gone past Christine Ohuruogu will stop Christine Ohuruogu is coming
:47:29. > :47:39.fast and is coming quick, about will it be quick enough? Christine
:47:39. > :47:42.
:47:42. > :47:48.might just make it for a start did she get it? 10m to go she was not
:47:48. > :47:57.there. Five metres to go, she was not there. Three metres to go and
:47:57. > :48:04.she was not there. Did she get it? We are waiting. She is looking, we
:48:04. > :48:09.are looking. The photo-finish will be the only thing to determine this.
:48:09. > :48:17.She smiles. The two of them are pretty good friends and they know
:48:17. > :48:21.each other well. A lot of respect. She has got it! A national record.
:48:21. > :48:30.Another gold medal. Christine Ohuruogu is the world champion
:48:30. > :48:35.again. Amantle Montsho cannot believe it. If he needed cheering
:48:35. > :48:41.up at any time in the next week, go to the website and what's that
:48:41. > :48:47.again and again. The determination on her face, Colin, it is just a
:48:47. > :48:50.picture. Amantle Montsho is not running her race. She keeps
:48:50. > :49:00.glancing up at the scoreboard watching when Christine is coming
:49:00. > :49:06.at her. She can see her coming. knows she is going to come. There
:49:06. > :49:11.is nothing you can do in the last 100m and then if you know she is
:49:11. > :49:17.coming because you are watching it on the screen, why would you not
:49:17. > :49:24.dip? She is going to hate this moment for the rest of her life.
:49:24. > :49:29.She literally gave it away. never see Christine like this will
:49:29. > :49:35.stop she has a range of emotions when she has won and when she is
:49:35. > :49:42.down in the dumps, but we never see tears from her. She said it herself,
:49:42. > :49:45.to win it with a national record as well. It was Kathy Cook's for a
:49:46. > :49:52.solo of the stock that is part of the emotion, and breathing,
:49:52. > :49:56.culling? When you look at what she has achieved, she has been
:49:56. > :50:01.Commonwealth champion and Olympic champion and world champion and now
:50:01. > :50:11.to win this and take that record, I have no doubt she has held Kathy
:50:11. > :50:17.
:50:17. > :50:27.And now she has beaten her. Christine has taken that incentive
:50:27. > :50:27.
:50:27. > :50:33.into everything she has done. It almost put a cap on her career, it
:50:33. > :50:37.is almost complete. You can get wrapped up in things, in the moment,
:50:37. > :50:41.and when you think of the year, with Andy Murray and Chris Froome
:50:41. > :50:46.and you would put this moment up their breaking barriers and moving
:50:46. > :50:53.through it and cementing yourself on this board. She is one of
:50:53. > :50:57.Britain's best athletes ever. We saw what Mo Farah has done and what
:50:57. > :51:02.Sebastian Coe has done, but Christine has come back time and
:51:02. > :51:08.time again and taken on the best in the world and beat them in their
:51:08. > :51:14.own game. She is an outstanding athlete in my opinion. Kathy Cook
:51:14. > :51:20.and her family are watching at home, a bittersweet moment. We lose a
:51:20. > :51:26.record it is not great. You lost your 200m record, I know you said
:51:26. > :51:34.Europe brother of and you're not crumpet the step did I come in a
:51:34. > :51:37.bit grumpy that day? It is that passage of time. She will be a bit
:51:37. > :51:44.disappointed, but you could not wish for a nicer, well-respected
:51:44. > :51:51.athlete to take it. I am sure she is therefore stop hello, Cathy.
:51:51. > :51:57.Another great story is Valerie Adams whose gold medal this
:51:57. > :52:04.evening... Her first throw was the gold medal. You are an expert on
:52:04. > :52:10.the shot put. I love it is athlete, she is outstanding and dominant and
:52:10. > :52:16.her technique is faultless. It is nice to see went an athlete is a
:52:16. > :52:22.complete package. She can complete these great performances time and
:52:22. > :52:30.time again. Motivation going forward, enjoy your athletics and
:52:30. > :52:37.keep winning. Many congratulations, you have created history. That is
:52:37. > :52:41.four world output championship titles in a row. Can you sum it up?
:52:41. > :52:47.This is the biggest competition in the calendar and I am happy to put
:52:47. > :52:55.it in the bag and claim my title world No. Four the stock without my
:52:55. > :53:01.coach, who was 70 this year, I would not have been able to do it.
:53:01. > :53:06.I am stoked, I am over the moon bow stuck you always do new Zealand
:53:06. > :53:12.proud. Use seems so calm and assured and you deliver every time.
:53:12. > :53:18.Looks can be deceiving. I tried to stay calm at the end and try to
:53:19. > :53:23.think of the things that I could do. I was very consistent. And the 4th
:53:23. > :53:28.world title. Another magical moment, congratulations.
:53:28. > :53:33.Another one who has won countless titles and medals and the jury she
:53:33. > :53:37.keeps on getting from her athletics and her medals is lovely to see the
:53:37. > :53:43.stock it is a blessing when you are injury-free and able to do what you
:53:43. > :53:49.want to do. It is what we all crave and desire and when it happens you
:53:49. > :53:55.keep thriving off it. When you have been at the top of the podium, you
:53:55. > :53:59.want to keep on doing it again and again. If you can cement that in
:53:59. > :54:06.your mind that it is a joy and a quick profession and a great job to
:54:06. > :54:13.have. It is a wonderful feeling. This man is happy way too often for
:54:13. > :54:18.my liking. Valerie Adams wins every time and that consistency gives you
:54:18. > :54:22.so much confidence and she comes into these championships with that
:54:22. > :54:27.confidence. When you know you are better and you have the talent, you
:54:27. > :54:32.control your own destiny for a stock that is why she is so
:54:32. > :54:38.consistent. That seems to be the vein of form at Mo Farah is in at
:54:38. > :54:43.the moment. He won the gold medal in the 10,000m on Saturday and he
:54:43. > :54:51.is racing in the first heat of the 5000 tomorrow morning. Brendan met
:54:51. > :54:57.up with him to have a chat specifically about the 5000.
:54:57. > :55:04.What do we look forward to? Their heats? I am not a morning person,
:55:04. > :55:09.but I'd go out there and do the most minimum possible. But in the
:55:10. > :55:19.final things are going to be quite exciting. The team has to do
:55:19. > :55:23.something. Because of the 10,000m, they have to win the five. Yes,
:55:23. > :55:28.even the Kenyan teams are strong and it is going to be a lot more
:55:28. > :55:34.hard it will stop you have got to believe in yourself and you have to
:55:34. > :55:40.go in there and say, I am going to beat these guys in your head, and
:55:40. > :55:45.at the same time respect them. You have to think you are better than
:55:45. > :55:51.them. You have good to come with believe and be at the front, but
:55:51. > :55:56.use your tactics that you have a. You are the greatest distance
:55:56. > :56:01.runner we have ever had and it is fantastic to witness it. But
:56:01. > :56:06.Kenenisa Bekele is the only man who has ever won the double at the
:56:06. > :56:10.World Championships. How would you feel stepping into his shoes?
:56:10. > :56:16.would be great because he is a great athlete. I remember when I
:56:16. > :56:21.was a junior I saw him winning and it would be nice to achieve
:56:21. > :56:26.something like that, that I have got to go out there and respect
:56:26. > :56:32.everybody and just be there. When you are running the race, when you
:56:32. > :56:40.are in the pack, what should the public be thinking? Have a cup of
:56:40. > :56:45.tea and chill out. I will fight to the line. It is great to have the
:56:45. > :56:49.public behind the other way, cheering for me. You certainly have
:56:49. > :56:53.the public behind you and you have got ours be handy and here his
:56:53. > :56:58.fingers crossed for the next few days.
:56:58. > :57:02.A very relaxed Mo Farah of. That was the morning after his 10 K win.
:57:02. > :57:10.I am sure right now he is getting so much that I am preparing himself
:57:11. > :57:15.for the heats. It is all towards the file on Friday. It has been
:57:15. > :57:21.very much about the recovery from the 10,000 because he was feeling
:57:21. > :57:27.it. It was very hot and very humid and now it is about focusing the
:57:27. > :57:31.mind for the 5000 full step I think it will be five. It is his to lose,
:57:31. > :57:36.but it will be challenging and the Kenyans will want to knock him off
:57:36. > :57:46.his perch. We have some very interesting races for you tomorrow
:57:46. > :58:07.
:58:07. > :58:15.Plenty of British interests and the Americans do well in the 800.
:58:15. > :58:19.finally. Traditionally we have had great 800m runners, but they cannot
:58:19. > :58:27.compete at championship level. Hopefully they will live up to the
:58:27. > :58:32.hype this time they stuck it is definitely getting chilly tonight.
:58:32. > :58:42.Scotland has got a jumper on and my car has come suitably dressed Mr up
:58:42. > :58:47.
