:02:15. > :02:18.the new stars of world athletics. Look at Kirani James gliding round

:02:18. > :02:28.that top bend. Kirani James is going to take Olympic gold. Total

:02:28. > :02:31.dominance. This is the current world and Olympic champion. He is 20 years

:02:31. > :02:41.old from the tiny Caribbean island of grenade. Is Kirani James about to

:02:41. > :02:45.

:02:45. > :02:48.go supernova? We shall see tonight. We've been getting around this city,

:02:48. > :02:50.it's still hot and humid. The world might be watching these athletics

:02:50. > :02:52.Championships, but the Muscovites, so far they don't seem to be enticed

:02:52. > :02:57.in from the countryside. Although tonight might be that night because

:02:57. > :03:07.Isinbaeva, their sweetheart, is on show and hoping for another gold

:03:07. > :03:13.

:03:13. > :03:16.medal to add to her collection. What a day we had, what an evening we had

:03:16. > :03:18.last night. Christine Ohuruogu gave us so many emotions, the joy and

:03:18. > :03:28.ecstasy of her victory. And her outpouring of emotion. Not just

:03:28. > :03:28.

:03:28. > :03:30.hers, Denise was moved to tears. Calmed down now? I know you met this

:03:30. > :03:33.morning, was it an emotional meeting? No, it was rejoicing with

:03:33. > :03:36.her. She's in a great mood, a good state of mind, happy, buoyant and

:03:36. > :03:41.with her family and friends. First 24 hours in Moscow, give me your

:03:41. > :03:51.lowdown. I've been sleeping and sitting here next to Denise, what

:03:51. > :03:58.

:03:58. > :04:00.could be better? You've been here before, right? I've never been to

:04:00. > :04:02.Moscow, I've been to Saint Petersburg. Burst impressions?

:04:02. > :04:11.Traffic. I think the traffic is quite easy compared to London. We

:04:12. > :04:14.will move on and show you what you got in store tonight. Perri

:04:14. > :04:20.Shakes-Drayton, a lead child and Meghan Beesley are all looking to

:04:20. > :04:29.make the finals of the 400 meter hurdles. Can the support of a home

:04:29. > :04:31.crowd inspired Elena Isinbaeva to gold in the pole vault? Katarina

:04:31. > :04:41.Johnson-Thompson is aiming for glory, as the heptathlon reaches its

:04:41. > :04:42.

:04:42. > :04:50.conclusion tonight with the 800m. Whilst the same distance separates a

:04:50. > :05:00.fellow Brit, Andrew Osagie, for a place on the podium. Kenya's Milcah

:05:00. > :05:03.

:05:03. > :05:06.Chemos has two bronze medals from previous championships, but she's

:05:06. > :05:08.chasing the gold tonight. And it's looking like a straight shoot out

:05:08. > :05:12.between LaShawn Merritt and reigning world champion Kirani James in the

:05:12. > :05:22.400m final. Just so you can plan your afternoon and early evening

:05:22. > :05:58.

:05:58. > :06:08.herself in a really good position with her finally bent. -- final

:06:08. > :06:35.

:06:35. > :06:37.top. That incredible race, it wasn't just a gold, it was the way she ran

:06:37. > :06:41.it, her guts and determination. Christine Ohuruogu, multi-gold medal

:06:41. > :06:44.winner on the platform. Who better to send her along the morning after

:06:44. > :06:54.the night before than another of our finest athletes? Denise went to meet

:06:54. > :07:07.

:07:07. > :07:09.and stay in contact here around the top bend. It is on show now who

:07:09. > :07:12.comes to the fore. Christine Ohuruogu. To run her down. She's

:07:12. > :07:22.coming fast and quick, but will it be quick enough? Will she get there?

:07:22. > :07:27.

:07:27. > :07:30.Christine is coming, she might just after the night before? It's really

:07:30. > :07:33.surreal. You prepare so much for this, everything has been on point,

:07:33. > :07:43.I haven't thought about anything else for that final. That's all I've

:07:43. > :07:47.

:07:47. > :07:50.been thinking about. Now it's gone, it's weird not having it there.

:07:50. > :07:55.that moment you looked up at the screen. My goodness, that was the

:07:55. > :08:05.longest wait! We are waiting, she's looking, we are looking. She's got

:08:05. > :08:21.

:08:21. > :08:23.it! Another gold medal, Christine Ohuruogu is a world champion again!

:08:23. > :08:26.Across the line, even though I've worked really hard, I really would

:08:26. > :08:29.love to come first, please let me come first. I didn't want to look at

:08:29. > :08:31.the screen in case to wasn't me. When my name came up, oh, my God,

:08:31. > :08:34.that was the best feeling ever! Christine Ohuruogu is the world

:08:34. > :08:37.champ in again and is also now the British record-holder. At what point

:08:37. > :08:40.did you realise you had the national record? It was when I saw the time,

:08:40. > :08:43.straightaway. I thought N are after my name. By the smallest of margins,

:08:43. > :08:53.you seem to do it every single time. That's the one thing I wanted, the

:08:53. > :09:00.

:09:01. > :09:03.national record. I've worked hard for it. Don't get me wrong, I wanted

:09:03. > :09:06.to win but I wanted the national record more than anything. That's

:09:06. > :09:08.the one thing I've been working for this year. What I get a sense of is

:09:09. > :09:18.about how you inspire people. That seems to be something that's really

:09:19. > :09:28.

:09:28. > :09:31.important to you. It is. I always believed we are here to be blessed

:09:31. > :09:34.and give a blessing to other people. I'm from a big family, so I've got

:09:34. > :09:36.loads of young ones coming after me. I want to set the right example for

:09:36. > :09:39.them and give them something to aim for. I've been fortunate enough that

:09:39. > :09:42.I've been successful and I've been able to make things work. At these

:09:42. > :09:45.things are not given to us, you have to go out in the world and take what

:09:45. > :09:48.you want. Nothing will be handed over to you. It's not going to be

:09:48. > :09:50.easy. The last few days have been the hardest in my life. But

:09:50. > :09:52.perseverance works. It's been such a pleasure watching you. All the

:09:52. > :09:54.disappointments you can't, the one word that comes through is

:09:54. > :09:59.perseverance. You've got a big heart, Christine. I'm very proud of

:09:59. > :10:05.you. You are going to make me cry! You almost brought her to tears

:10:05. > :10:08.again. It's amazing how she just seems so complete. She said that,

:10:08. > :10:18.the national record was everything that she was working towards this

:10:18. > :10:28.

:10:28. > :10:30.year. That is so important. After London, finishing second, she really

:10:30. > :10:33.thought she could have won gold. Then she reassessed, new goals and

:10:33. > :10:36.she achieved it. It's brilliant. said in the build-up that even a day

:10:36. > :10:38.before, she was perhaps going to have to run a national record to

:10:38. > :10:42.beat her opponent. She felt she could do it, Michael, but executing

:10:42. > :10:44.it is another thing. Yes. As Christine said, this is what they've

:10:44. > :10:47.been working on all year. I think Christine and her coach always have

:10:47. > :10:57.known that she can run much faster than she has run. Now she's been

:10:57. > :11:37.

:11:37. > :11:40.able to put it together. That's why she was so proud. She said that she

:11:40. > :11:42.wanted to set the national record. That national record was a real

:11:42. > :11:44.target for her over the years because, although she wanted to set

:11:44. > :11:47.the national record. That national record was a real target for her

:11:47. > :11:49.over the years because, although she's would have wanted, because she

:11:49. > :11:52.always knew she could run faster. When you are such an Luba athlete as

:11:52. > :11:55.she is there a responsible to almost that you feel you can't leave the

:11:55. > :11:57.sport, and did you feel like that, that you can't leave the sport

:11:57. > :12:00.without leaving that kind of indelible mark on it? It's unique to

:12:00. > :12:03.each individual. For me, I knew I was capable of breaking the world

:12:03. > :12:05.record. I'd gotten so close to it so many times, so it would have been a

:12:05. > :12:08.huge disappointment to leave the sport without having done that. For

:12:08. > :12:11.Christine, it's not so much a world record, it's the national record.

:12:11. > :12:14.Also, I can run so much faster than this. You want to run as fast as you

:12:14. > :12:17.can, do the best you possibly can and leave your career when it's over

:12:17. > :12:20.and say, I don't think I could have gotten much more out of myself than

:12:20. > :12:22.that? We know she leaves it late, yet you still have your heart in

:12:22. > :12:25.your mouth on that final bend, she comes off it and she's usually four

:12:25. > :12:28.or five back. But last night was incredible. This is 2007. Again, it

:12:28. > :12:31.was modus operandi as normal. know, but that's the way she runs.

:12:31. > :12:34.You are not going to change her. This is her. As much as Lloyd has

:12:34. > :12:36.tried to work on that first 200, and she has and she is getting better,

:12:36. > :12:38.she feeds of pouring people back. This is what makes the animal. She

:12:38. > :12:41.loves that challenge. We are talking about that national record, the

:12:41. > :12:44.process of getting there is what has enjoyed her the most. Knowing you

:12:44. > :12:54.can sit down at the beginning of the season, put together a plan and make

:12:54. > :13:23.

:13:23. > :13:26.it work. I think she's thrived on that. This is the one thing that she

:13:26. > :13:29.realises, this is last night, so she is much closer to the pack at this

:13:29. > :13:32.point. That's because she's realised over the years, I'm sure Lloyd has

:13:32. > :13:35.worked with her and said, look, you can't just sit back there and run a

:13:35. > :13:38.slow 200 and then pull it out at the last minute, that's not going to

:13:38. > :13:44.work every time. That's what I had to do in order to break the world

:13:44. > :13:47.record. I had to finally overcome a barrier. You've got to get out. My

:13:47. > :13:50.code was telling me every year, you've got to get out the blocks in

:13:50. > :13:53.the 400 the same way you do in the 200. But I always said, it's twice

:13:53. > :13:55.the distance, I'm not going to do that. But when I finally did it I

:13:55. > :13:58.broke the world record. We always wanted to see that out of Christine.

:13:58. > :14:02.I sat there last year in London going, could she have won it if she

:14:02. > :14:05.was going out faster and attacking the first 200m? That's the 400 metre

:14:05. > :14:07.runner in me saying, I'm not quite satisfied with that. We are

:14:07. > :14:10.celebrating this and it's great, she's had a great career, but I'm

:14:10. > :14:15.always thinking, what more could she do? So you think there are still

:14:15. > :14:18.goals? That national record must have been a huge one. She can still

:14:18. > :14:23.run faster than that. If you put yourself in position at 200m with

:14:23. > :14:25.the rest of the athletes, part of the reason Christine has a strong

:14:25. > :14:28.finish is because she wasn't really running the first 200. But she is

:14:28. > :14:30.still a very strong athlete, stronger than the rest of them.

:14:30. > :14:33.She's pretty quick as well. You find the right race strategy that really

:14:33. > :14:36.speaks to her, works towards a gift and her combination of gifts, she

:14:36. > :14:39.can run faster than that. To put it into context, her achievements, we

:14:39. > :14:42.had this debate. You were having it mainly with Jonathan and Colin in

:14:42. > :14:52.the back of the car on the way home last night, about whether or not she

:14:52. > :14:53.

:14:53. > :14:56.is the greatest of all our female athletes ever. She is level on six

:14:56. > :15:00.with Kelly Holmes. Everyone is in their own era. Diniz, you are up

:15:00. > :15:04.there yourself with four. Is that a good way to judge her? If she has

:15:04. > :15:14.the world record, it's never going to happen, I don't think, it would

:15:14. > :15:17.

:15:17. > :15:19.put her head and shoulders. The criteria has got to be a gold medal.

:15:20. > :15:22.You think a world record as well. But she is up there. What she's

:15:23. > :15:26.done, back-to-back championships, meddling and, if she gets the

:15:26. > :15:36.Olympic gold medal, she's impressive. She doesn't need us to

:15:36. > :15:40.

:15:40. > :15:43.tell her she's the greatest. None of this matters to her. The medals are

:15:43. > :15:45.nice will stop she takes great pride in how she inspires others. That's

:15:45. > :15:47.what I really got out of the interview today. She wanted that

:15:47. > :15:50.national record because, again, being the best in your country is

:15:50. > :15:54.one thing, but it is solidified by having that national record. Jessica

:15:54. > :16:03.Ennis-Hill to the same way about being the best, winning medals but

:16:03. > :16:07.not owning the British record, and now she does. Mo Farah was out again

:16:07. > :16:10.today and made it look like a stroll in the park. Quite the crew he was

:16:10. > :16:14.there with Galen Rupp, his training partner and he crossed the line in

:16:14. > :16:22.fifth but this was not going to test him too much, this was just about

:16:22. > :16:26.qualifying and getting himself there. This was about qualification

:16:26. > :16:30.and getting Galen Rupp to qualify because it was the second of the

:16:30. > :16:36.heats and these guys should have been running quicker and they didn't

:16:36. > :16:40.and Mo wants to manage race. He does not want to spend too much energy,

:16:40. > :16:46.look at the two of them, it looks like they are having a nice training

:16:46. > :16:50.run. " How are you today, cappuccino afterwards? " We will be hoping that

:16:50. > :17:00.you will be there to watch him go for what would be an incredible

:17:00. > :17:06.

:17:06. > :17:10.Have a cup of tea, chill out, Mo is in the race! You have to have that

:17:10. > :17:17.confidence and belief in yourself. You have to go into the race and

:17:17. > :17:20.think, yes, I am going to win. I will fight to the line. The final, I

:17:20. > :17:26.think it's good to be quite exciting.

:17:26. > :17:32.COMMENTATOR: This is world domination for Mo Farah!

:17:33. > :17:35.5:45pm, BBC One on Friday, Mo says it cup of tea, it is the end of a

:17:35. > :17:39.working week, but if you want to make it stronger, I will forgive

:17:39. > :17:49.you! It'll be a thrilling race. Today was the second and final day

:17:49. > :17:50.

:17:50. > :17:52.of the heptathlon, let's show you came to the long jump full of

:17:52. > :17:56.optimism this morning after a blistering 200 metres yesterday

:17:56. > :18:04.evening which put her in contention for a medal. She sped down the

:18:04. > :18:08.runway and leapt out to 6.35 metres, 959 points. If she could

:18:08. > :18:12.employ the sort of speech he does on the track and transfer that into

:18:12. > :18:15.long jump, she would absolutely fly. Breanna Theisen Eaton was in the

:18:15. > :18:20.medal hunt as well, one of the best long jumpers on display this

:18:20. > :18:24.morning. A couple of centimetres further than Dafne Schippers, 6.37

:18:24. > :18:30.metres, she was maintaining her present in this heptathlon

:18:30. > :18:32.competition. And then the leader, Ganna Melnichenko, she has been at

:18:32. > :18:38.the top of the leaderboard for the majority of the seven event

:18:38. > :18:46.heptathlon. The long legged Ukrainian leapt out to 6.49 metres

:18:46. > :18:48.and over 1000 points, once again. Then it was down to Katarina

:18:48. > :18:54.Johnson-Thompson, world junior long jump champion after a foul in the

:18:54. > :19:00.first round. She got it together in round two, absolutely nailed the

:19:00. > :19:04.take-off, went out to 6.56 metres, even more points than Melnichenko

:19:04. > :19:09.and she improved by one place and moved up to fifth. Then it was the

:19:09. > :19:15.javelin, the mid--- the penultimate event. Theisen Eaton once more with

:19:15. > :19:21.one of the best throes of her life. 45 metres .64 centimetres. She is

:19:21. > :19:27.certainly in the driving seat for the medals at the moment. The

:19:27. > :19:31.European champion Nana Djimou representing France, always comes on

:19:31. > :19:39.strong in the latter half of the two of the heptathlon. Well over 50

:19:39. > :19:47.metres, and 908 points. 52 metres. And she was in the hunt for a medal

:19:47. > :19:51.as well. And then came the leader, Melnichenko. Or the remaining throws

:19:51. > :19:57.were about the same sort of distance but Melnichenko has been getting

:19:57. > :20:02.lots of personal bests throughout this heptathlon and once again, the

:20:02. > :20:05.Ukrainian posse were supporting their champion. Katarina

:20:05. > :20:09.Johnson-Thompson was consistent if not brilliance during the javelin. A

:20:09. > :20:13.season's best in round two, this was her third and final throw. She has

:20:13. > :20:19.never been over the 40-metre line in competition until this time. Just

:20:19. > :20:26.over 40 metres. The Liverpool Harrier, another personal best, her

:20:26. > :20:30.third in a row. And then Dafne Schippers, the speed merchant. Finds

:20:30. > :20:36.the javelin a bit difficult but she just nipped in with 41.47, a bit

:20:36. > :20:42.ahead of Katarina. And she consolidated her third-place

:20:42. > :20:46.position. So with just the 800m to go, it is a fascinating situation,

:20:46. > :20:51.like a book. You will not find out what happens until the very last

:20:51. > :20:58.page of the last chapter. 5619 points for Melnichenko, I think she

:20:58. > :21:01.will win gold, Breanna Theisen Eaton with 5551, just ahead of Dafne

:21:01. > :21:05.Schippers but then it is very complicated. Between fourth and

:21:05. > :21:09.eighth place, around 88 points, anybody could pick up the bronze

:21:09. > :21:16.medal including Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

:21:16. > :21:21.GABBY LOGAN: What an exciting eight metres it promises to be. Theisen

:21:21. > :21:25.Eaton's husband is here, Ashton Eaton. I am nervous.I bet you are,

:21:26. > :21:29.but we wanted to relive your gold medal a couple of days ago. Let's

:21:29. > :21:34.have a look at how you got it. COMMENTATOR: What out for Ashton

:21:34. > :21:41.Eaton. That might watch out. He is coming away from everybody very

:21:41. > :21:46.quickly indeed. Can he produce something special? That the pretty

:21:46. > :21:51.good to me. Here's some athlete. The world's record-holder, looks like he

:21:51. > :21:56.has gone a long way and he is the man. Ashton Eaton is running one of

:21:56. > :22:05.the best 400m of his life, Ashton Eaton by an absolute country mile,

:22:05. > :22:09.46.03. The end of day one, on top of the pile. Ashton Eaton starts his

:22:09. > :22:15.charge on day two. A good final throw in this decathlon competition

:22:15. > :22:22.by the Olympic champion. Really explosive. There is nothing this

:22:22. > :22:27.young man cannot do. That was one of his best throes over to confirm his

:22:27. > :22:30.status as the top athlete leading into the final event. Well anybody

:22:30. > :22:40.beat Ashton Eaton in the years to come? Years absolutely superb as a

:22:40. > :22:42.

:22:42. > :22:45.multi-eventer. -- he is absolutely good but then your new wife starts

:22:46. > :22:49.her onslaught and efforts to win a gold medal, I don't suppose you have

:23:46. > :23:50.together so we know the ups and downs all the way through and if

:23:50. > :23:53.there is something I am not supposed to say, she will tell me. That is

:23:53. > :23:57.not helping at all and she is a very stern individual but that is why I

:23:57. > :24:04.like her. You have done the maths and know what she needs to get

:24:05. > :24:08.tonight. She is 68 points down from Melnichenko and her PB in the 800m

:24:08. > :24:14.is 2.12 and she has to be said by five seconds if she wants the gold.

:24:14. > :24:18.I was watching on Russian television this morning, she had a poor throw

:24:18. > :24:22.in the javelin and immediately the camera cut to you and you were

:24:22. > :24:26.sighing. It was not a supportive face, it was disappointed. I am glad

:24:26. > :24:30.she could not see you then. But then the incident in training with the

:24:30. > :24:36.javelin as well, I was slightly worried! I thought she might aim it

:24:36. > :24:40.at you! She grazed your nose. Literally grazed my face. I go out

:24:40. > :24:43.to become I javelin, no concern and then I hear my name, screaming

:24:43. > :24:47.bloody murder and instantly I knew a javelin was heading for my back and

:24:47. > :24:51.I thought, what will I do? Had turned and looked and saw a flash of

:25:20. > :25:23.literally do all of our training together. Sometimes our cultural

:25:23. > :25:27.split us up because there are different queues for each of us but

:25:27. > :25:31.every day we go through the same thing and you hear stories about

:25:31. > :25:35.people who live together and work together. It is usually not so good.

:25:35. > :25:38.Sometimes they have struggles and we have had ups and downs but we

:25:38. > :25:46.definitely... It is revolution and we know our good and bad days, we

:25:46. > :25:54.know when to knock taught -- not talk track and sometimes we will

:25:54. > :26:01.watch YouTube... What do you do to chill out, then? We do nothing.

:26:01. > :26:06.Because as athlete, rest is a very important part of training and it

:26:06. > :26:16.is, what kind of fun things can you do when you rest? Way, watch movies

:26:16. > :26:18.

:26:18. > :26:21.she can look on Pinterest, thank goodness for that. We have a big

:26:39. > :26:43.moustache! It would take me literally three months! Isn't it

:26:43. > :26:47.time it goes now, Daley Thompson? And he said no, this is my

:26:47. > :26:54.trademark. It is a trademark. It reminds me of one of the policeman

:26:54. > :27:02.in Chips. He is a Bastian of the sport and his determination and one

:27:02. > :27:07.of only two guys to win Olympic golds back-to-back. Jessica

:27:08. > :27:12.Ennis-Hill was like you, got married this year, not to a fellow

:27:12. > :27:17.decathlete, to an ordinary bloke! A different way of doing things but

:27:17. > :27:21.she is not here, sadly. It is sad but Jessica, she doesn't have

:27:21. > :27:25.anything to prove, she proved it all last year and the year before and

:27:25. > :27:31.she is a fantastic person to have in the sport and I am glad to be

:27:31. > :27:40.competing in her error because what she does is spectacular -- in her

:27:40. > :27:44.era. It is ridiculous, my wife will watch on YouTube. She will see what

:27:44. > :27:49.she does and we literally thought the same camera that they use for

:27:49. > :27:53.training -- bought the same camera. She looks up to her and whatever

:27:53. > :27:57.Jessica is doing, she will try to mimic some of that and get that for

:27:57. > :28:01.my training so as athlete we look up to people like that. White aggro

:28:01. > :28:07.absolutely. We have our own Katarina Johnson-Thompson who is just 20

:28:07. > :28:13.years old and she has got herself a few PBs here and she has put herself

:28:13. > :28:22.in the mix and if she can run a PB tonight, then Denise... A medal

:28:22. > :28:24.could be has? By this stage, everybody has worked it out with the

:28:24. > :28:30.pawn scores and worked out exactly who their target men or women are.

:28:30. > :28:36.And they know what they have to do, whether it is to track a particular

:28:36. > :28:41.athlete or to go out hard and I have been very impressed with her, she

:28:41. > :28:45.was a bit disappointed about the first day, finished with a superb

:28:45. > :28:50.200 metres but that has come out and done two personal bests in the long

:28:50. > :28:55.jump and javelin. It is sensational and now she is in the hunt for a

:28:55. > :28:59.medal and we are wondering, how good she can be. On average, our great

:28:59. > :29:04.heptathlete have put on at least 1000 points moving from juniors to

:29:04. > :29:08.seniors and if you have a look at the history of British athletes,

:29:08. > :29:13.Denise was about 1000 points, Kelly Silverton, more than that, Jessica

:29:13. > :29:21.Ennis-Hill, about 1000 points, and if Katarina to Johnson-Thompson does

:29:21. > :29:24.that, you know where she's going, a world record. When you have Kelly,

:29:24. > :29:28.Denise Lewis, you start to develop a heritage and you will have junior

:29:28. > :29:31.athletes who will be performing much better and better and so that

:29:31. > :29:39.transition from junior level to senior level with see a bit of

:29:39. > :29:43.contraction in terms of that in terms of projection. But a big

:29:43. > :29:47.future? Absolutely, an incredible future and it is thanks to people

:29:47. > :29:50.like Jessica and Denise who have set the pace. We will talk about her

:29:50. > :30:00.specific attributes later as we get towards the 800m, I am intrigued

:30:00. > :30:10.

:30:10. > :30:15.about the domestic life of the 111 household. -- the Eaton household.

:30:15. > :30:19.Most of the time I am shown to gauge her attitude and see what I can do.

:30:19. > :30:22.But we balance each other really well. I think I am the more playful

:30:22. > :30:26.person and she can be playful at times but in this sort of situation

:30:26. > :30:31.she is serious and needs to be lightened up. So I will crack a joke

:30:31. > :30:35.that I think is ridiculous but she will smile. It helps. I hope you are

:30:36. > :30:39.both smiling from ear to ear tonight at the very best of luck. Even if

:30:39. > :30:44.something goes wrong, we will still be smiling, we are able to be here

:30:45. > :30:49.together. Another honeymoon later in the year? Who do not take the

:30:49. > :30:55.javelin 's! Stay away from sharp things! Congratulations, great to

:30:55. > :31:00.see your journey together. The clock is ticking down to those 400 metre

:31:00. > :31:10.hurdles semifinals, and the women's is first and we have a full, men

:31:10. > :31:31.

:31:31. > :31:41.dreamt of it, I liked for it to have ended. But I learned from my

:31:41. > :31:44.experience, I channelled that into my winter training. Last year for me

:31:44. > :31:54.was the best of the years I've had. I started really well but I went

:31:54. > :32:04.

:32:04. > :32:07.downhill from there. I got worse and worse and didn't make the Olympics.

:32:07. > :32:10.I went on holiday, thought I'd forget about it for awhile. I came

:32:10. > :32:13.back and was renewed, I had a new love for the sport. Greene I think

:32:13. > :32:16.last year I was in better shape to run faster than I actually did. This

:32:16. > :32:20.year I feel I'm running to form. It's gone really well. It's good, I

:32:20. > :32:30.run my PB in Gateshead. I'm really happy with the season so far but I

:32:30. > :32:31.

:32:31. > :32:33.need to have it when it happens. makes me think if they can do it

:32:33. > :32:41.then I can do it as well. I'm following in their footsteps,

:32:41. > :32:43.hopefully. We need to take every round as it comes and finish it up

:32:43. > :32:48.in the top positions. In the Olympics, I was third and just

:32:48. > :32:55.missed out on making it to the final. You have to treat the

:32:55. > :33:05.semifinal kind of like a final. think too much about it being a

:33:05. > :33:14.

:33:14. > :33:17.race, I get too nervous. I've competed against a lot of the girls

:33:17. > :33:20.all season. I've just got to think it's another run. I definitely want

:33:20. > :33:23.to make the final. This is my third world champs and I've never made the

:33:23. > :33:26.final yet, only the semis. I want to be in that final. If I can go in

:33:26. > :33:30.there and perform the way I've been running this season, run APB, run my

:33:30. > :33:33.best race in that final, then I'll be delighted, wherever I finish. As

:33:33. > :33:36.long as I step off the track knowing I've left everything on the track

:33:36. > :33:42.and done my best. As an athlete, you do train to win medals. I would love

:33:42. > :33:45.to come away with any kind of medal. It would be a big

:33:45. > :33:48.improvement. That final, that is going to be really important. It

:33:48. > :33:58.will be a relief for me as well. You've got to give it all you've

:33:58. > :34:09.

:34:09. > :34:19.child has the best chance of going through. Everybody trying to hang on

:34:19. > :34:27.

:34:29. > :34:31.herself against Hejnova. Delilah Muhammad as well. Nickiesha Wilson

:34:31. > :34:35.is a very strong Jamaican. Just the first three go through here. Two

:35:11. > :35:38.

:35:38. > :35:42.Ailey child out in lane six. In between them, Delilah Muhammad, the

:35:42. > :35:49.US champion. It is fairly even at the moment. Meghan Beesley trying to

:35:49. > :35:59.keep pace. She hit a hurdle hard just about here in the heats and

:35:59. > :36:07.

:36:07. > :36:10.Muhammad and Beesley fading a little bit. Child still looking strong.

:36:10. > :36:19.Nickiesha Wilson trying to stay with them. Beesley beginning to fade a

:36:19. > :36:21.little bit but still a good run from her. Hejnova is imperious over the

:36:21. > :36:31.final barrier. Delilah Muhammad comes through as well. Ailey child

:36:31. > :36:36.

:36:36. > :36:43.will get there for the third automatic qualifying place.

:36:43. > :36:46.watching this race carefully and I'm thinking that Ailey could possibly

:36:46. > :36:52.have done a personal best. It was a good, strong performance by her. In

:36:52. > :36:55.the semifinal you've really got to work hard. There's no messing

:36:55. > :37:05.about. You get into the groove of your stride and work all the way to

:37:05. > :37:10.

:37:10. > :37:20.the line. Child has worked hard for that third spot to get the automatic

:37:20. > :37:20.

:37:20. > :37:23.qualifying spot. She is just shy of her personal best. It's a good

:37:23. > :37:26.performance. She's in that final. That is the most important thing.

:37:26. > :37:33.Things are opening up behind Hejnova. With Spencer being out,

:37:33. > :37:40.Georgia and falling. Things are opening up behind Hejnova. Who knows

:37:40. > :37:43.what might happen in the final. know that hurdle is even at their

:37:43. > :37:53.best can be quite clumsy. They can lose focus. But she is in that

:37:53. > :37:55.

:37:55. > :37:57.final. Beesley has been confirmed. 54.97, a personal best for her.

:37:57. > :38:06.Child is running her way towards that final, which will take place on

:38:06. > :38:16.Thursday. Perri Shakes-Drayton to go will stop very impressive run from

:38:16. > :38:38.

:38:38. > :38:41.performances. This has been your goal all year and you've done it.

:38:41. > :38:43.has. I wanted to come here and make the final. That wasn't even a good

:38:43. > :38:46.race, it wasn't that fast or technically that good. I'm just

:38:46. > :38:48.delighted I got to the final. close to your personal best. You've

:38:49. > :38:52.come for the experience. To perform like that, you must be thrilled.

:38:52. > :39:02.wasn't perfect but hopefully I can go quicker than that. I will be

:39:02. > :39:08.

:39:08. > :39:10.cheering her on. It's great to have these two, Perri Shakes-Drayton, now

:39:11. > :39:13.we see you coming along and bearing fruit for Britain as well. Hopefully

:39:13. > :39:17.next time I will be in the final. Your hopes and expectations for the

:39:17. > :39:27.final now you've made it? I've just got to go for it. If I can get a PB

:39:27. > :39:49.

:39:49. > :39:59.her semifinal, just a few minutes away. She's seen Eilidh go through.

:39:59. > :40:13.

:40:13. > :40:23.And a really good run from Meghan only one missing is the championship

:40:23. > :40:33.

:40:33. > :40:42.balance, too. Around about the 65 metre mark there. That could be

:40:42. > :40:49.enough to take the lead. Pyotr Malachowski is in the lead at the

:40:59. > :41:06.

:44:09. > :44:09.

:44:09. > :44:11.year from Demus. She takes the penultimate barrier really well.

:44:12. > :44:14.Perri needs to get over safely. It's all about qualifying. Here comes

:44:14. > :44:20.Perri Shakes-Drayton. Very good. It will be Titimets who come through

:44:20. > :44:23.for the third spot. She took the challenge of Demus. Demus really

:44:23. > :44:33.went through. I thought for a little while we dashed back maybe Demus is

:44:33. > :44:35.back to her best. But all of a sudden, what we've been seeing more

:44:35. > :44:45.recently, Perri Shakes-Drayton strong after the last two flights.

:44:45. > :44:45.

:44:45. > :44:47.We've all seen Perri -- Perri on the flat this year. Perri can really use

:44:47. > :44:53.that speed. She demonstrated that perfectly today. It's important to

:44:53. > :45:01.win your semifinal, to get one of those two lanes, either lane four or

:45:01. > :45:11.five in the final. It makes your job a little bit easier. She's taking it

:45:11. > :45:12.

:45:12. > :45:14.nice and steady, controlled for the first half of the race. Making sure

:45:14. > :45:24.that the stride pattern is correct and accurate. She set herself up for

:45:24. > :45:35.

:45:35. > :45:38.every single barrier. Demus went off like a rocket, as expected. She came

:45:38. > :45:41.up to Perri's shoulder quite early around this turn, but no panic for

:45:41. > :45:43.Perri. She sticks to her stride pattern, she knows what she can do.

:45:43. > :45:45.She's got to be accurate the whole way round because she has an

:45:45. > :45:48.internal belief that coming off that last barrier with this new-found

:45:48. > :45:50.sprinting speed, that she can really deliver strong running. That is

:45:50. > :45:55.exactly what she did. Still a little bit unsure widget comes to the

:45:55. > :45:57.change down, between seven and eight. But, you know what, it

:45:57. > :46:00.doesn't matter today because the important thing, that she keeps her

:46:00. > :46:07.head, keeps strong, works into that line and get one of those priority

:46:07. > :46:11.lanes for the final. Nice and relaxed and with the likes of Demus,

:46:11. > :46:21.you cannot take any chances, and I think she has just about got her

:46:21. > :46:22.

:46:22. > :46:26.make it look effortless. How do you feel about making the final? I am

:46:27. > :46:34.pleased, it is a progression. I am through to the final. Of course I am

:46:34. > :46:38.happy, my first senior final in the world. And I feel good, I will rest

:46:38. > :46:41.tomorrow and back on Thursday. great thing was that when we spoke

:46:41. > :46:45.at the Anniversary Games, you ran so well coming into the home straight

:46:45. > :46:50.and then at the end of the race, you said you needed that finish, work at

:46:50. > :46:57.it for a couple of weeks and there is your proof. Yes, the end that was

:46:57. > :47:01.what we were working on. I am getting there! I am through, so I

:47:01. > :47:05.couldn't be more happy. We have been talking about you as not only a

:47:05. > :47:15.finalist but a potential medallist and with that form you must be

:47:15. > :47:17.

:47:17. > :47:20.thinking big things? I would like to come home with some kind of bling

:47:20. > :47:26.but he will not say too much, you will have to wait and see. Thank

:47:26. > :47:33.you. COMMENTATOR: So far, so good for

:47:33. > :47:41.Perri. 53.92, not quite as good as Perri. 53.92, not quite as good as

:47:41. > :47:51.Zuzana Hejnova but much better from might be a danger. And Titmets as

:47:51. > :48:01.disappointing first throw goes into the circle for his second round

:48:01. > :48:01.

:48:01. > :48:07.throw, Gerd Kanter in the lead, that is flying. Well over the 65-metre

:48:07. > :48:13.mark. The roll of honour in terms of champion in the last three World

:48:13. > :48:23.Championships has been Robert Harting, Robert Harting and Gerd

:48:23. > :48:24.

:48:25. > :48:31.Kanter. We must add another former champion here but the ghillie

:48:31. > :48:36.Virgil. That is a big lead for Robert Harting of Germany. How can

:48:36. > :48:43.the former leader respond to that? Schmallenberg was leading up to the

:48:43. > :48:51.first round with 64.90 metres. A bit of balance -- off balance but that

:48:51. > :48:58.is nowhere near the distance Robert Harting through. That really was a

:48:58. > :49:06.superb throw by Robert Harting. And very still conditions. If you are a

:49:06. > :49:10.right-handed thrower, you need a bit of a nice wind coming in as you

:49:10. > :49:20.throw it. There is no wind in the stadium. Six to 5.19, he is in

:49:20. > :49:23.

:49:23. > :49:29.second place. -- 60 5.19. Can Perri shakes Drayton -- Perri

:49:29. > :49:39.Shakes-Drayton edge Zuzana Hejnova in the final? The two fastest losers

:49:39. > :49:51.

:49:51. > :49:59.are Nickiesha Wilson and Anna but she seems to suffer in terms of

:49:59. > :50:02.getting heard the back so -- getting her breath back. She is always

:50:02. > :50:06.doubled over and take the time and it looks like she is not answering

:50:06. > :50:13.the question and she is trying to be cool but she is just getting her

:50:13. > :50:18.breath back. Yes, she is that is such a tough event. It really is.

:50:18. > :50:23.am not denying that, by the way! that stage of the race, it is

:50:23. > :50:26.critical that the athlete stays in the moment. She is clearly going

:50:26. > :50:30.through these championships thinking about her end goal and answering the

:50:30. > :50:36.question, sometimes the wrong version at the wrong time can throw

:50:36. > :50:43.an athlete's mine. You do not want to be distracted you want to stay

:50:43. > :50:46.comfortable and confident. We are used to seeing a one off race, we

:50:46. > :50:51.are seeing her championship head on in a Diamond League event. But she

:50:51. > :50:54.seems a bit different to how we see her on the circuit there. Yes, and

:50:54. > :50:59.she has come with expectations, she does not want anybody else's

:50:59. > :51:04.expectations put on her head and she has not made a global final before,

:51:04. > :51:06.having run really quickly and so she wants to keep herself in that

:51:06. > :51:11.competitive mind frame where anything can happen. You have to be

:51:11. > :51:15.able to react, be aware of your competitors and make sure she can

:51:16. > :51:19.deliver on what she wants to for these championships. Let's have a

:51:19. > :51:26.look at Meghan Beesley and Eilidh Child, in the first semifinal. What

:51:26. > :51:33.did you make of their form? thought they ran a good race. She

:51:33. > :51:43.ran a really solid race, Meghan, and with some of the big names out of

:51:43. > :51:43.

:51:43. > :51:47.this, you would think that she could make this final and the thing would

:51:47. > :51:51.be for Eilidh is to guide aggressively, really solid race, and

:51:51. > :51:55.again, you make a good point with Meghan Beesley, you cannot ask for

:51:55. > :51:59.much more for an athlete to come to a championships, and a young athlete

:51:59. > :52:03.as well to run a personal best when you can leave this championship and

:52:03. > :52:06.say you did the best you could. They will take from this, learn from it

:52:06. > :52:14.and apply it will stop at Eilidh Child again here run a really solid

:52:14. > :52:20.race, keeping herself and it -- and apply it. Eilidh Child again here

:52:20. > :52:25.ran a really solid race. She has shaved off a bit from her PB, and

:52:25. > :52:31.having somebody so close to aim for as an athlete in your own national

:52:31. > :52:35.squad, that must be a really big attribute. Yes, and a big motivator.

:52:35. > :52:40.These grills have grown together, they have competed a lot in the

:52:40. > :52:44.under 23 championships and she has watched the bass progression from

:52:44. > :52:48.Perry Shakes-Drayton and she wants a bit of that and she is good enough

:52:48. > :52:55.and so she has been on the flat four indoors, she has worked hard and she

:52:55. > :53:00.has made leaps and bounds. Just like Meghan Beesley has. She is on her

:53:00. > :53:05.way. She is at the start of hers, she is learning the event and she

:53:05. > :53:08.needs to be a bit stronger, a bit quicker if she will live with the

:53:08. > :53:15.likes of these girls. It was great to see them getting through to the

:53:15. > :53:18.semifinals. And Meghan Beesley will take a lot from that PB, tasting

:53:18. > :53:22.this environment, learning how to go through rounds, it will be such a

:53:22. > :53:25.good experience for her going forwards to Commonwealth Games,

:53:26. > :53:30.World Championships in the future. All the major championships she will

:53:30. > :53:35.compete in. And it is the mindframe, it has taken Perri about three years

:53:35. > :53:39.to understand what it is like being here, being in the warm up area and

:53:39. > :53:43.the demeanour that you have to have. Do you believe that you belong here?

:53:43. > :53:51.Of Perri and Meghan Beesley... Sorry, Eilidh Child have answered

:53:52. > :53:56.that to themselves. Let's bring Colin Jackson in, we have seen Perri

:53:56. > :53:59.putting a lot of work into her 400 metre flat and there was a time

:53:59. > :54:05.whether she would fancy going for the 400 because she was doing very

:54:05. > :54:08.well. It has paid off because the work she has done at the end of her

:54:08. > :54:12.race, you can see where she has worked on her race this season.

:54:12. > :54:16.of the big things that we can all say is that what has happened with

:54:16. > :54:20.Perri, the injury factor that would have happened previously, she has

:54:20. > :54:24.got rid of that, that has allowed her to spend a bit of time on the

:54:24. > :54:28.technical aspects of the event and really get to know how to compete

:54:28. > :54:32.over 400 metre hurdles without panicking and she demonstrated that

:54:32. > :54:36.very clearly in her semifinals, so it is a wonderful thing to see,

:54:36. > :54:39.athletes that are maturing and developing, with still a lots to do

:54:39. > :54:43.because I don't think she is finished yet, that is for sure. She

:54:44. > :54:53.has a long way to go. Seeing her race now, Zuzana Hejnova and have

:54:53. > :54:58.had few races this season and she is the person for Perri to aim towards.

:54:58. > :55:05.Yes, I think that is the person that Perri would like to be close to. And

:55:05. > :55:08.she can probably beat her so it is joining this great that speed she

:55:08. > :55:15.has gained this season with a wonderful, better and more skilful

:55:15. > :55:19.hurdling ability. She has spent a lot of time listening to criticism

:55:19. > :55:23.and how she can improve things that I love the things that she has still

:55:23. > :55:27.worked hard up at that event, she enjoys it and that what is key

:55:27. > :55:31.because it allows her to commit to it. Work are the technical aspect of

:55:31. > :55:41.it and that will really propel her seriously into real world-class

:55:41. > :55:41.

:55:41. > :55:46.athletes. I am talking about winning these major titles because she is

:55:46. > :55:51.able to do that. We will join the men in the hurdles soon, two at

:55:51. > :55:55.three in the women, put your money on the mend, how many? Colin?

:55:55. > :55:59.will be so tough with the men. Dai Greene he was defending world

:55:59. > :56:07.champion has been struggling with form, trying to recuperate from his

:56:07. > :56:12.injuries and illnesses, Rhys Williams is having the season as his

:56:12. > :56:15.life and I think for all of them, it will be absolutely crazy, the

:56:15. > :56:20.semifinals are tough, we all murder semifinals are not easy and poor

:56:20. > :56:25.Sebastian Rodger as well, that is the toughest semifinal of the lot,

:56:25. > :56:29.the first one. But it is gaining experience, rubbing shoulders with

:56:29. > :56:32.the top athletes, understanding them and see how they run, see how they

:56:32. > :56:35.prepare and how they ultimately deliver performances under great

:56:35. > :56:39.pressure and certainly, Sebastian Rodger is the guy who will learn the

:56:39. > :56:49.most today. Thank you, Colin. Let's take a look at the three of them,

:56:49. > :56:58.

:56:58. > :57:07.they were in Barcelona and Phil season, and it has been a tale of

:57:07. > :57:10.two halves. I ran really well indoors, and then I have had a few

:57:10. > :57:14.injuries which have not me back during the outdoor season but I have

:57:14. > :57:18.trained well, disappointing not to run in Monaco and at the Anniversary

:57:18. > :57:24.Games as well but I seem to be over the worst of that and hopefully I

:57:24. > :57:28.can turn that around just in time for Moscow. Every Grand Prix, you

:57:28. > :57:31.always want to win them and I find myself this season, compared to last

:57:31. > :57:35.season, where I was ten metres behind some of the top runners, I

:57:35. > :57:39.have found myself in the mix a lot more. So the aim is to come up at

:57:39. > :57:47.home straight in the lead and really push in for those winds and I feel

:57:47. > :57:51.it has gone a lot better. Really exciting for me, it was quite a

:57:51. > :58:01.breakthrough year, this has been. I knew I could do it but to be sitting

:58:01. > :58:06.

:58:06. > :58:09.here with the likes of Dwain, it has been great. I need to run as fast as

:58:09. > :58:16.I think I can. I will have to read every single round as a final, every

:58:16. > :58:20.heat and run harder. And run just as hard in every round. I may surprise

:58:20. > :58:25.myself and I know I am capable of running quicker so you will have to

:58:25. > :58:34.believe I can do it. Nobody has really set their stall out in the

:58:34. > :58:38.four metres hurdles, everybody has had ups and downs -- 400m hurdles.

:58:38. > :58:48.And her black and challenge from there again. White NACRO it is going

:58:48. > :58:52.to be --. It is going to be fierce, and for Dai Greene, coming in

:58:52. > :58:57.without ideal preparation, winning races in the lead up to this, he has

:58:57. > :59:01.to treat this as a final, to get through to the final. Yes, he

:59:01. > :59:07.absolutely does. It is unfortunate to see him in this position where he

:59:07. > :59:11.is not the Dai Greene of two years ago, he has struggled so much, last

:59:11. > :59:16.year and this, I cannot believe how one guy can be so unlucky but he is

:59:16. > :59:22.here and Dai Greene has a good racing brain and that is what he

:59:22. > :59:29.will have to rely on, he knows exact the what to do, it is the fitness he

:59:29. > :59:37.will have to draw on in the closing stages, and he will have to make no

:59:37. > :59:40.mistakes. For Sebastian Rodger is, he said there himself, this was his

:59:40. > :59:45.breakthrough year, it is about experience, perhaps a bit of the

:59:45. > :59:50.Meghan Beesley about him in that respect. Yes, and that is an

:59:50. > :59:53.exciting time an athlete. When you really have nothing to lose. If he

:59:53. > :59:58.doesn't make this final, it is not a huge disappointment for anyone so

:59:58. > :00:01.that is a great position to be in compared to Dai Greene who has

:00:01. > :00:04.really been having to win in the World Championships, so much

:00:04. > :00:10.expectation that he has for himself and that everybody else has for him

:00:10. > :00:17.as well. He is the exact opposite edition. Great position to be in but

:00:17. > :00:20.going back to Dai Greene, it is difficult especially for him who

:00:20. > :00:23.thrives on his confidence and ability to go out and run well

:00:23. > :00:27.because he has trained well, he has not been able to do that so this

:00:27. > :00:31.puts him in a difficult position, he will have to run this as if it is a

:00:31. > :00:34.final but there is no doubt that what will be weighing on his mind is

:00:34. > :00:37.that he can go out and run the best race today, and still not make the

:00:37. > :00:41.final because he does not have the condition. It is a difficult

:00:41. > :00:44.position to be in, where you have to go out and basically get yourself in

:00:44. > :00:49.the mindset and think that is all you can so that is all you will do,

:00:49. > :00:53.and we will see what happens after the finish. And what about Rhys

:00:53. > :00:57.Williams? Knowing him, he is confident that, he is enjoying his

:00:57. > :01:03.athletics once again after being out of the sport for a while and coming

:01:03. > :01:08.into this Championships, he won the UK trials, he is here and he will

:01:08. > :01:13.want to be in that final, he has come off a very disappointed but if

:01:13. > :01:17.he does not make the cut. He is the combination of both of those, he has

:01:17. > :01:27.that experience, the experience that Dai Greene has and the confidence

:01:27. > :01:30.that Sebastian Rodger has because he has run a personal best this year,

:01:30. > :01:35.and then you come into a championship off that and with this

:01:35. > :01:38.thing being really wide open, as is always the case. It is wide open but

:01:38. > :01:44.it is a difficult wide open because you have so many great athletes and

:01:44. > :01:47.that is the men's 400m hurdles over the last few years, so many former

:01:47. > :01:54.champions and world champions European champions, Olympic

:01:54. > :01:57.champions. Is that because of the technical aspect of the hurdles?

:01:57. > :02:04.Because of the slightly more unpredictable nature as opposed to

:02:04. > :02:09.say, the 400 flat that makes it that much more wide open, and you get

:02:09. > :02:13.champions from two Olympics party win a medal? I think it is the best

:02:13. > :02:19.part of it -- I think that is the part of it. It makes it so

:02:19. > :02:28.difficult, the technical makes, and where guys can come in and win this

:02:28. > :02:32.even though they are not experience, and it pays off more than in any

:02:32. > :02:37.other event because it is such a difficult event to train for and

:02:37. > :02:45.then technically, the margin for error is extremely small. And that

:02:45. > :02:49.is how you can see, Taylor win two Olympics, Sanchez won the Olympic

:02:49. > :02:53.games in between as well, that does not happen in any other event.

:02:53. > :02:58.have had great tradition in the 400m hurdles just as the Americans and

:02:58. > :03:03.that encourages more young people to come through and want to take up the

:03:03. > :03:07.event and success breeds success. That race to come, those races,

:03:07. > :03:17.let's get outside and take in some field events, it is the men's discus

:03:17. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:34.final tonight, let's see how they He crashed that one against the

:03:34. > :03:42.cage. I guess that is what you do sometimes when you are trying a

:03:42. > :03:52.little bit too hard. I think he will become champion, but he has some

:03:52. > :03:54.

:03:54. > :04:04.time to go before he emulates one of his heroes. Malachowski now,

:04:04. > :04:12.

:04:12. > :04:22.desperately trying to get in amongst from Poland gets over 65 metres. He

:04:22. > :04:23.

:04:23. > :04:25.has thrown 71 metres this year. The fourth longest throw in history. He

:04:25. > :04:35.brought Robert Harting's three-year winning streak to an end. That is

:04:35. > :04:41.

:04:41. > :04:43.how good he is. 65.09. The big three are in first, second and third

:04:43. > :04:48.place, Harting, Kanter and Malachowski. This is the queen of

:04:48. > :04:58.Russia. She's just been introduced to the crowd. The Elena Isinbaeva.

:04:58. > :05:00.

:05:00. > :05:02.She has competed sparingly. But if her form in the qualifying

:05:02. > :05:12.competition is anything to go by, she will be champion once more.

:05:12. > :05:12.

:05:12. > :06:28.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:06:28. > :06:30.This is unreal when it comes to semi-finals. When you go through the

:06:30. > :06:32.names, the quantity of the names in this field, they've all achieved

:06:32. > :06:34.something. Either major championships, medals, run very

:06:34. > :06:36.quick, it's extraordinary. But I'm hoping this young man will gain a

:06:37. > :06:40.lot of experience from being in this competition today. We talked about

:06:40. > :06:50.the openness of the men's 400 metre hurdles. There are no favourites.

:06:50. > :06:50.

:06:50. > :07:31.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:07:31. > :07:34.Beesley getting a personal best, see where that gets you. You are right.

:07:34. > :07:36.That's exactly what you want to do. He's already got a silver medal for

:07:36. > :07:46.the under 23s championships. He's got the experience of getting into

:07:46. > :07:53.

:07:53. > :08:01.the championships and finals and athletes. Tristan Thomas, the

:08:01. > :08:10.Australian champion from Brisbane. His personal best goes back to 2009.

:08:10. > :08:20.Said Roger, he's taken on -- of a second and a half of his personal

:08:20. > :08:45.

:08:45. > :08:55.Championships, and bronze in London. Kasse Hanne, only a

:08:55. > :08:55.

:08:55. > :08:58.semifinalist at the Olympics but good progress this year. Jacob

:08:58. > :09:05.Gordon, we all thought he was going to be the next big thing when he

:09:05. > :09:08.burst on the scene, four years ago. He didn't really kick off then but

:09:08. > :09:17.he has now. He's starting to find himself and his form again. The

:09:17. > :09:20.South African champion, Frederick 's, fifth at the last World

:09:20. > :09:25.Championships. We do have a former world champion in this line-up. The

:09:25. > :09:35.rather diminutive figure of Jackson. Eight years ago in Helsinki he won

:09:35. > :09:35.

:09:35. > :10:32.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:10:32. > :10:35.it. Olympic bronze medallist in hold. Roger in lane two. Trying to

:10:35. > :10:42.keep pace with high calibre athletes outside him. Jackson is down! Culson

:10:42. > :10:52.storming on. Jackson lying prone on the back straight. Culson is gap --

:10:52. > :11:02.galloping on. Seb Roger trying very hard as they come round the top

:11:02. > :11:12.bend. Only the first two to go through automatically. Culson and

:11:12. > :11:14.

:11:14. > :11:16.Gordon stopped to separate themselves from the rest. Culson

:11:16. > :11:18.starting to fade a little bit. Gordon looks around, looks

:11:18. > :11:28.comfortable. He comes across the line, 48.11. Culson gets the second

:11:28. > :11:48.

:11:48. > :11:50.automatic qualifying place. A race one. He looks in absolute agony. He

:11:50. > :11:53.looks like he pulled his hamstring going into that barrier. The last

:11:53. > :11:56.thing you want to do when you pull your hamstring as they say three

:11:56. > :11:59.foot barrier. He had to take it. But this is where the business end days.

:11:59. > :12:01.Culson, Gordon battling, as we've seen them do many times this year,

:12:01. > :12:10.all the way to the line. It's all about qualification. Doesn't Gordon

:12:10. > :12:12.look good? A strong finish from Seb Roger coming through there. But

:12:12. > :12:15.Gordon, we talked about his talent as a 17-year-old in Berlin, four

:12:15. > :12:25.years ago. Perhaps again he will be challenging in amongst the medals

:12:25. > :12:32.

:12:32. > :12:34.come Thursday's final. The time for Seb Roger confirmed. It's a good

:12:34. > :12:37.49.32. He set of aggressively, he wasn't intimidated with his field.

:12:37. > :12:47.It's about sticking to your race plan. Sometimes you can get carried

:12:47. > :12:51.

:12:51. > :12:54.away with the occasion, and really be taken out of your comfort zone,

:12:54. > :12:57.out of your groove. But, no, he kept his head, he kept calm, there's a

:12:57. > :13:00.lot of action going on in front of him. He worked very well into all of

:13:00. > :13:04.these barriers. I think this guy has got a real, genuine future in this

:13:04. > :13:11.event. If he sticks to it, a little bit of luck, meaning no injuries,

:13:11. > :13:13.then we could see something really special from him. To be battling

:13:13. > :13:23.with the top guys in Great Britain. A really good, competent

:13:23. > :13:28.

:13:28. > :13:31.performance. Let's see what the man himself thinks about it.

:13:31. > :13:33.You may did and you performed admirably again. You must be pleased

:13:33. > :13:36.the weight you've acquitted yourself on this grand stage. I think so. I'm

:13:36. > :13:43.pleased with that. I kept hitting that hurdle, I'm not sure why. I

:13:43. > :13:53.tried my best. Came out here with all this lot, some of the top boys

:13:53. > :14:05.

:14:05. > :14:07.the world. I like to think I held my own. Annual -- know few selections

:14:07. > :14:09.were made this year to build -- bring people like yourselves to the

:14:09. > :14:11.championships. When you've had the experience, what are the biggest

:14:11. > :14:16.lessons learned, what will you take forward? The whole experience has

:14:16. > :14:18.amazing. It's really given me a drive for future championships.

:14:18. > :14:28.Everything is a learning curve at this point in my career. All the

:14:28. > :14:52.

:14:52. > :14:55.ever after his personal best for Seb team-mate of Robert Harting. Out of

:14:55. > :14:58.the medals at the moment. It looks as though he's got hold of that one.

:14:58. > :15:06.That is bang on the 65 metre line. Malachowski has thrown 65.09. Kanter

:15:06. > :15:08.is a little bit further. Robert Harting had that monster throw in

:15:08. > :15:18.round two, of 68.13. That could put Malachowski and a bit of pressure.

:15:18. > :15:29.

:15:29. > :15:34.It is just short. Wierig in fourth on his day, 48.09, so he is a pretty

:15:34. > :15:41.good 400m hurdler. What do you put that down too, just a hamstring

:15:41. > :15:45.going? Obviously a hamstring which is very difficult, it is something,

:15:45. > :15:48.where it no matter how well you warm up, you just goes over the barrier

:15:48. > :15:52.and no matter how well you warm up, sometimes these things just happen

:15:52. > :15:58.so very fortunate day for Bershawn Jackson, a great hurdler, he has

:15:58. > :16:03.been around for years. He was making a comeback this year and thought he

:16:03. > :16:08.had great opportunity this year to get back in there and get a medal

:16:08. > :16:12.again so very unfortunate for him. Not good news for Bershawn Jackson,

:16:12. > :16:18.and Seb Rodger seem to take that in his stride and there is Bershawn

:16:18. > :16:22.Jackson, he has had some medical treatment, he will go off and

:16:22. > :16:25.contemplate but Denise, what can you say or he say's it is really bad

:16:25. > :16:32.luck. That is the nature of the sport, obviously dejected but it

:16:32. > :16:36.really happens. That is probably the end of this season, I am hoping it

:16:36. > :16:46.is not a bad state, something more minor than that hopefully.

:16:46. > :16:46.

:16:46. > :16:50.semifinal, it is because there are heaps and semifinals in the women's

:16:50. > :16:53.and men's. Rhys Williams is going in this one. That's handy back to the

:16:53. > :17:03.commentators. COMMENTATOR: They are all tough, but

:17:03. > :17:21.

:17:21. > :17:27.Michael Tinsley, number one in the reiterated, the fastest loser times

:17:27. > :17:32.to think about third and fourth places from that first semi, 48.69,

:17:32. > :17:38.48.85, and if you do that Rhys Williams here, his personal best set

:17:38. > :17:43.this year, 48.84, so he will have to be... If he is not in the top two,

:17:43. > :17:51.people have to run a personal best. He has to equal it at the very least

:17:51. > :17:55.and come third. Well, Tinsley, Olympic silver medallist, won the

:17:55. > :17:59.London Diamond League, the only man under 48 seconds this year, but

:17:59. > :18:05.Gordon looked so good, didn't he? Look out for the Serbian just

:18:05. > :18:12.outside him, Emir Bekric, because he is a fast improving young man, he

:18:12. > :18:17.impressed me in qualification. He is outside Tinsley and lots of cheering

:18:18. > :18:27.for the young Russian in lane six, the new European junior champion. A

:18:28. > :18:30.

:18:30. > :18:40.fast finisher. That is Emir Bekric there. For the years 22 and so lots

:18:40. > :18:45.

:18:45. > :18:51.trying to pick up the ones who should figure here. We have had less

:18:51. > :19:01.drama in this than in the women's 400m hurdles so far. But one more

:19:01. > :19:10.

:19:10. > :19:18.race to come with Dai Greene after away safely and Rhys Williams has

:19:18. > :19:25.got his attack out. Tinsley going well, that is his style. Down the

:19:25. > :19:35.back straight now, the third flight of hurdles, Emir Bekric is right in

:19:35. > :19:35.

:19:35. > :19:42.this, and Rhys Williams really needs to move here. Williams is in about

:19:42. > :19:45.four for Facebook look at this big, strong Serbian leading this. Tinsley

:19:45. > :19:51.a second and Rhys Williams a long way off at the minute, it has to be

:19:51. > :19:57.good in the closing straight. Only the top two go through by writers,

:19:57. > :20:01.Bekric is really impressing, Tinsley is trying to get a of him, and Rhys

:20:01. > :20:08.Williams only fault, not quite quick enough, I am pretty sure of it. --

:20:08. > :20:14.Rhys Williams only four. We see Rhys Williams here, but this young Bekric

:20:14. > :20:19.is getting better and better, he is a big old man, Colin, isn't he?

:20:19. > :20:24.is huge, massive. Thick, strong, aggressive. Everything you need for

:20:24. > :20:29.this event, he has. And he worked hard and remember, he is only a

:20:29. > :20:38.young man, only 22 so he will gain more and more and more experience

:20:38. > :20:42.with higher competition. You will see him competing more regularly

:20:42. > :20:46.against these guys but here is Rhys Williams, in lane eight and I will

:20:46. > :20:49.be honest, it is a difficult line to run out off, especially over the

:20:49. > :20:54.hurdles because the hurdles are placed differently around the track

:20:54. > :20:58.and you may not be used to that. The second hurdle is slightly more

:20:58. > :21:05.awkwardly placed than you would usually see it, on a corner so he

:21:05. > :21:10.has handled this rally well -- very well indeed. He might be frustrated

:21:11. > :21:17.and you could look at this and say that you are better than this but

:21:17. > :21:20.49.29 aces final time -- is his final time that I think he has

:21:21. > :21:24.raised very well to get in the semifinal stage and it is about

:21:24. > :21:32.gaining experience, working hard and last year when he did win the

:21:32. > :21:39.European Championships, this year he had a big breakthrough going under

:21:39. > :21:48.49 seconds and now it is just about competing with the big boys. He gave

:21:48. > :21:53.it everything, tough, as Colin said out in lane eight. Actually ahead of

:21:53. > :21:59.him, as we see in the result, the two fastest loser so far with more

:21:59. > :22:09.to come are from the first semifinal but Tinsley, a bit of a push there,

:22:09. > :22:22.

:22:22. > :22:25.fascinating competition so far, the considerable bulk and speed of Piotr

:22:25. > :22:32.Malachowski the and at last he puts distance between himself and the

:22:32. > :22:36.city five-metre line. Yes! That is more like it -- himself and the

:22:36. > :22:41.65-metre line. It is not as far as Robert Harting but that will put the

:22:41. > :22:46.world champion, defending world champion, under a bit of pressure.

:22:46. > :22:53.Robert Harting will have to look to himself, this competition is far

:22:53. > :23:01.from over. He likes it, 67.18 and moves into second ahead of Gerd

:23:01. > :23:08.Kanter. Robert Harting, 68.13 and a foul, we saw that in the last

:23:08. > :23:16.round. What can he do in round four? He has got hold of that one, that is

:23:16. > :23:22.flying. Absolutely massive. Close to the 70-metre line. After that foul

:23:22. > :23:29.in the last round, it did not affect him one jot. The mental preparation

:23:29. > :23:35.before he went into the circle and the execution was wonderful. That

:23:35. > :23:43.was a brilliant, brilliant throw. That could be the gold medal once

:23:43. > :23:49.more for Robert Harting. 69.11, he is out there to be beaten but I am

:23:49. > :23:57.not sure anybody can. Dai Greene getting ready to go in the third

:23:57. > :24:07.semifinal but this -- his fellow training partner Rhys Williams fail

:24:07. > :24:07.

:24:07. > :24:15.your life going under 49 but how tough was it to be in lane eight?

:24:15. > :24:19.was tough but... I am gutted. I am gutted not to be in the final.

:24:19. > :24:26.me, what was it like, with about 200, you see the Japanese guy on a

:24:26. > :24:30.shoulder, is it difficult to re-establish things by that point?

:24:30. > :24:33.don't know what I need to do to get in this final, in the World

:24:34. > :24:40.Championships, it is jinxed to me. I am gutted, though I don't like to be

:24:40. > :24:50.a bad loser. We talked in Barcelona about Berlin to this point. How soon

:24:50. > :24:51.

:24:51. > :24:57.do you re-evaluate what you do need to do to get to the next stage?

:24:57. > :25:02.Speaking with your coach... don't... That is not rudeness, that

:25:02. > :25:12.is heartache at not making the final and understandable. We could see

:25:12. > :25:16.

:25:16. > :25:23.through automatically. Felix Sanchez, twice the Olympic jumping

:25:23. > :25:33.and the world champion and he suddenly came to life. There is Omar

:25:33. > :25:36.Cisneros, and Kerron Clement, twice world champion, he won eight in

:25:36. > :25:44.Osaka and defended it in Berlin, Olympic silver medallist in Beijing

:25:45. > :25:49.as well. -- he won it in Osaka. Eric Alejandro, Olympic semifinalist from

:25:49. > :25:59.Puerto Rico, and one of the athletes here, might find the pace for the

:25:59. > :26:01.

:26:01. > :26:05.middle lane is a bit too quick as well Rasmus from Estonia, and as for

:26:05. > :26:09.Dai Greene, he has done every single thing possible to get here in shape

:26:09. > :26:17.and form and fitness. It will be his title defence but he has been

:26:17. > :26:27.constantly fighting against illness and injuries, a hernia operation and

:26:27. > :26:50.

:26:50. > :27:00.men's 400m hurdles, the first two to go through automatically to the

:27:00. > :27:02.

:27:02. > :27:12.the better run, the great Felix Sanchez" Mikey looked good in the

:27:12. > :27:13.

:27:13. > :27:18.first round -- the great Felix Sanchez in? The big Jamaican outside

:27:18. > :27:27.him just now, with Omar Cisneros looking strong outside Felix

:27:27. > :27:30.Sanchez, and he rises alongside Sanchez, Dai Greene will come round

:27:30. > :27:36.but it will have to be a strong finish and the lakes might not be

:27:36. > :27:40.there. Omar Cisneros leads, Sanchez, Kerron Clement finishing strongly,

:27:40. > :27:45.only two to go through automatically and Kerron Clement tried to get

:27:45. > :27:48.level but Felix Sanchez, Sanchez tried to get close to Omar Cisneros,

:27:48. > :27:57.but Sanchez gets the second automatic place and Kerron Clement

:27:57. > :28:04.will look for the time, Dai Greene down in about sixth place. And his

:28:04. > :28:08.title defence ends here, we expected that illness and injury would mean

:28:08. > :28:11.that he did not have it in the legs. Unfortunately, he could not

:28:11. > :28:15.put himself in any position where he could make a difference in the

:28:15. > :28:18.outcome of this race. At the eighth hurdle he would be there or

:28:18. > :28:22.thereabouts and racing in attack but this year, he has not been able to

:28:22. > :28:28.progress, he spent most of his time on the physio table or talking with

:28:28. > :28:32.doctors, trying to recover so it has been a difficult here for Dai

:28:32. > :28:40.Greene. But he still had his beautiful fiancee over the barriers,

:28:40. > :28:46.he has been able to home that -- his beautiful technique over the

:28:46. > :28:51.barriers. He has a lovely, fluent motion, but of course you have got

:28:51. > :28:55.to marry that with good technique and strong endurance to be really

:28:55. > :29:00.effective over this distance. And Dai Greene will keep a level head,

:29:00. > :29:05.he will know what happened this season, realise he has spent most of

:29:05. > :29:08.it recovering, and I hope he does not get disheartened because he is a

:29:08. > :29:13.quality athlete, he has been European champion and world champion

:29:13. > :29:19.and so it is just to shake off this whole horrid year for him and just

:29:19. > :29:23.refocus and work hard at regaining titles in the upcoming seasons.

:29:23. > :29:26.did everything he could to be here, working in the swimming pool and in

:29:26. > :29:31.the gym and on the bike and he said himself, there is no substitute for

:29:32. > :29:41.running and he was not able to get those yards and metres down on the

:29:42. > :29:44.

:29:44. > :29:48.fighting something and the story in Delhi, were you able to rebound from

:29:48. > :29:52.something like that? Yeah, just didn't have it in attack tonight. On

:29:52. > :29:56.the one track we were struggling to get to the first hurdle, really

:29:56. > :30:00.struggling to get the strides on the back straight, and that is where I

:30:00. > :30:03.lost contact with them. It was harder than it should have been. If

:30:03. > :30:07.you miss a bit of training, that is what it looks like when you compete

:30:07. > :30:16.against the top guys, it shows. White crowds who have had no luck

:30:16. > :30:19.this year. You have had no luck this year. After my operation, I knew I

:30:19. > :30:24.couldn't get back in time, things were going well until the last

:30:24. > :30:28.couple of weeks and this chance came a week too early for me and if I had

:30:28. > :30:32.another week, I might have been able to get myself back up to the

:30:32. > :30:36.intensity but it is such a shock to the system. After not doing much

:30:36. > :30:46.these last few weeks and then racing against the top guys. I appreciate

:30:46. > :30:46.

:30:46. > :31:44.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:31:44. > :31:54.in the final of the men's 110m medal. The anthem and the flag being

:31:54. > :31:54.

:31:54. > :34:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:34:07. > :34:10.Gold to David Oliver, silver to Germany in control in this discus

:34:10. > :34:17.final. Malachowski is certainly not giving up. He, too, is closing in on

:34:17. > :34:27.Harting. That is the Olympic shot put champion, in support of his big

:34:27. > :34:33.

:34:34. > :34:36.thrower. He's a big man but he moves so quickly. On that occasion, I'm

:34:36. > :34:46.sure he got the balance right as well. Harting, 69 point 11.

:34:46. > :35:03.

:35:03. > :35:06.opening height in the women's pole vault final. We don't quite know

:35:06. > :35:15.what went on, but she made a protest to the officials. They have allowed

:35:15. > :35:17.her to take that again. We will have to try and find out what the protest

:35:17. > :35:23.was about, it may have been about the clock. All the fact that the

:35:23. > :35:33.equipment was not absolutely right. She is the Olympic champion, after

:35:33. > :35:41.

:35:41. > :35:44.all, she knows the sport inside out. coming in until 4.65. The Olympic

:35:44. > :35:54.champion is safely over, effectively at the second attempt to stop but it

:35:54. > :36:17.

:36:17. > :36:20.will go on a record as her first the infield. This is the last throw

:36:20. > :36:22.that can challenge for a third consecutive gold medal. And it's not

:36:22. > :36:24.to be. Malachowski once again does not win gold. He has figured in

:36:25. > :36:27.every major championship for about the last seven or eight years, but

:36:27. > :36:34.he has to pay homage to the best discus thrower of his generation.

:36:34. > :36:37.Robert Harting wins once more. He wants it to fly. It did fly. It was

:36:37. > :36:47.certainly long. Not too many discus throwers in the world have thrown

:36:47. > :37:04.

:37:04. > :37:14.that far. That confirms that Robert and Olympic champion. He gets a

:37:14. > :37:15.

:37:15. > :37:17.medal. The order at the moment is Harting, Malachowski and Kanter. As

:37:17. > :37:23.the champion elect goes into the circle for the last attempt. That is

:37:23. > :37:33.exactly the same order as happened in Berlin in 2009, when Robert

:37:33. > :37:58.

:37:58. > :38:05.Harting first sprang to prominence. competition, he was the very first

:38:05. > :38:11.thrower to go. He started off modestly, 62 metres. Then he

:38:11. > :38:21.exploded in the second round to 68. In the fourth round, 69. I think

:38:21. > :38:36.

:38:37. > :38:39.he's done it again. 69 .11. Is that London last year, the Olympic title,

:38:39. > :38:49.he actually went down the home straight the wrong way over the

:38:49. > :38:51.

:38:51. > :38:54.hurdles. That was very impressive! Not the same this time, but Robert

:38:54. > :38:56.Harting is one of the best athletes of his generation in the discus, in

:38:56. > :39:04.any event. He has been so dominant, working on his technique

:39:04. > :39:14.incessantly. Working in the gym so, so hard. And three times he is now a

:39:14. > :39:38.

:39:38. > :39:40.victory ceremony in London, I wonder if he is going to do something

:39:40. > :39:43.special here. Malachowski can only wonder how on Eddie can beat the

:39:43. > :39:45.great German. And Kanter, who's been on the medal rostrum since 2005 in

:39:45. > :39:55.Helsinki, when the championship record was set at 70.17, he is on

:39:55. > :40:00.

:40:00. > :40:07.from earlier, so no hurdling. If he attempts any other discipline then

:40:07. > :40:10.we will go back out there. He is an incredible athlete and a showman and

:40:10. > :40:20.a great face for the sport. In London, he also fell asleep at the

:40:20. > :40:21.

:40:21. > :40:23.London train station after he'd partied a bit hard. Watch out Moscow

:40:23. > :40:25.train stations tonight, because he could appear there. Let's go back to

:40:25. > :40:28.the 400 metre hurdles. Great disappointment from the British

:40:28. > :40:30.point of view not to get any of our men through there. A hugely

:40:30. > :40:40.emotional response from Rhys emotional response from Rhys

:40:40. > :40:45.

:40:45. > :40:46.Williams. He really wanted to make emotional response from Rhys

:40:46. > :40:49.Williams. He really wanted to He said he'd staked everything on it.

:40:49. > :40:52.And he should have made that final. He came in here running a personal

:40:52. > :40:54.best this year. Everything was set up for him, but for the fact he was

:40:54. > :40:57.in lane eight. It's difficult but not an excuse. I can understand why

:40:57. > :41:07.he would be disappointed because this was a great opportunity for him

:41:07. > :41:10.

:41:10. > :41:13.to be in the final. As we talked about earlier, you've got to get it

:41:13. > :41:16.done at the Championships, you have to have your best race here. It's a

:41:16. > :41:26.very difficult event but he's been running it for years, he's got the

:41:26. > :41:39.

:41:39. > :41:49.experience. At the end of the day, it would be a huge disappointment

:41:49. > :42:17.

:42:17. > :42:19.for him and for the Great Britain team because he should be in that

:42:19. > :42:22.final, there's no doubt about it. Dai Greene less so because of the

:42:22. > :42:25.build-up. It was just kind of, let's see what happened. He did all he

:42:25. > :42:28.could. It was going to be hugely difficult to go in there. I don't

:42:28. > :42:31.know how he approached it, but it was all going to be about his mental

:42:31. > :42:34.state. Whether or not he went in a down or disappointed and wasn't able

:42:34. > :42:37.to perform at his best today, or whether that was all he had due to

:42:37. > :42:39.the fact that he hasn't been in great shape and has been ill as well

:42:39. > :42:42.in the year leading up to this. Hugely disappointing for him. It is

:42:42. > :42:45.tough in the sport. You've got to show up, you've got to be healthy,

:42:45. > :42:48.it's very difficult to stay healthy in this sport. He's had a lot of bad

:42:48. > :42:58.luck, so... Sometimes you have to make your own luck. Look back, OK,

:42:58. > :43:06.

:43:06. > :43:08.is there anything I could do? In drastic times that calls for drastic

:43:08. > :43:10.measures. When you don't make championship finals and don't medal

:43:10. > :43:13.when you should do time and time again, when you know you have the

:43:13. > :43:16.talent, and he has the talent, you have to go back and think about,

:43:16. > :43:18.what can I do? Everything has to be on the table. Cisneros highlighting

:43:18. > :43:21.that this event doesn't have one person wins and takes all. He missed

:43:21. > :43:24.out on an Olympic final last year and he has done something this year.

:43:24. > :43:26.Exactly. It is about how you approach each season and what you do

:43:26. > :43:28.differently, what enters your mind, your coaching setup. You have to

:43:28. > :43:31.look at the whole package. Making slight changes here and there can

:43:31. > :43:33.produce times like that. The event is wide open. It is the women's 800m

:43:33. > :43:35.for the last event of the heptathlon. There are three races.

:43:35. > :43:37.heptathlon. There are three races. The last race is a loaded one.

:43:37. > :43:39.Katarina Johnson-Thompson from Great Britain is going in there, looking

:43:39. > :43:42.for a PB, to perhaps get herself amongst the medals. While the

:43:42. > :43:52.earlier races are taking place, we will take you back to 1980 once

:43:52. > :43:56.

:43:56. > :43:58.more. There was a pretty iconic 800m heptathlon. There are three races.

:43:58. > :44:01.The last race Steve Ovett looking for room. He tries to come round him

:44:01. > :44:11.on the outside. It's now become tactical. The bumping and brawling

:44:11. > :44:24.

:44:24. > :44:26.we expected has happened. The Will he try and barged his way

:44:26. > :44:29.through as they come towards the bell? There he goes, bursting

:44:29. > :44:38.through. Getting a rough ride. 54.05, a slow time. The Brazilian

:44:38. > :44:45.leaves. Sebastien Coe has got himself in trouble right at the

:44:45. > :44:51.back. 320 metres to go. Steve Ovett in fourth place. Those blue eyes

:44:51. > :45:01.like chips of ice. Getting knocked about there. Sebastien Coe coming

:45:01. > :45:02.

:45:02. > :45:05.up, trying to make his run. Steve Ovett is in second place and

:45:05. > :45:15.Sebastien Coe has got a lot to do. They've been all over the place in

:45:15. > :45:17.this race, it's been a running battle. Steve Ovett hits the front.

:45:17. > :45:23.Sebastien Coe can't get through. Steve Ovett coming through to take

:45:23. > :45:27.the gold medal for Great Britain, to beat Sebastien Coe. Steve Ovett

:45:27. > :45:37.looks up in triumph. That was a race looks up in triumph. That was a race

:45:37. > :45:42.

:45:42. > :45:51.back there. He had success about in the past and the eight and the bit

:45:51. > :45:56.is it such a difficult event because it is so tactical and you never know

:45:56. > :46:02.-- the 800m is such a difficult event. People can win it in 1.45,

:46:02. > :46:12.and that is one of those races were you go in with a strategy, and 100

:46:12. > :46:15.

:46:15. > :46:21.metres in, you are throwing it out of the window because of what the

:46:21. > :46:27.other people are doing. The fabulous athlete David Rudisha, he is not

:46:27. > :46:31.here, so it is a wide open event but the two are Americans who were

:46:31. > :46:35.fourth and fifth see this is the opportunity. Yes, they do. And when

:46:35. > :46:39.he have been around for such a long time, you want that opportunity to

:46:39. > :46:45.comment you are in shape and your rankings are, they feel it is now

:46:45. > :46:50.and they want to take it. And you cannot help but the first few from

:46:50. > :46:56.the games are away, and you have to be there on the start line. And then

:46:56. > :47:01.the 1,500m came which featured our very own Steve Cram, a young looking

:47:01. > :47:11.Steve Cram with his bouncy, blonde hair. These are his thoughts that

:47:11. > :47:13.

:47:13. > :47:16.that you go to the other big games and you have got the all the

:47:16. > :47:20.grandeur that it should be but we were wrapped up in this elliptical

:47:20. > :47:28.argument. Those who believe that sport is nothing to do with politics

:47:28. > :47:34.are living in a dream world. weren't even sure if the team would

:47:34. > :47:39.go. Lots of countries followed suit after America decided they were not

:47:39. > :47:42.going to go and there was a lot of pressure to follow suit.

:47:42. > :47:48.Thatcher appeals again to Britain's athletes, think again about going to

:47:48. > :47:56.Moscow. There was a concerted media campaign about whether it was the

:47:56. > :48:00.right or wrong thing. The team under great pressure to change its mind.

:48:00. > :48:05.But it was always a case that we are going until somebody tells us we are

:48:05. > :48:11.not. The overwhelming point of view from the athletes is that they want

:48:11. > :48:14.to go. I was aware of the arguments but it wasn't just that I wanted to

:48:14. > :48:24.go to the Olympic Games, I genuinely thought that it was the right thing

:48:24. > :48:28.

:48:28. > :48:33.to do and to this day, I will still Communist Russia as it was then was

:48:33. > :48:40.very different to anything I had experienced up to that point. The

:48:41. > :48:44.media intensity particularly around Coe and Ovett. Two people in a

:48:44. > :48:48.scenario that has never been repeated, certainly not at that

:48:48. > :48:51.level so it was interesting to watch those two carry out their roles yet

:48:51. > :48:57.still trying to find my own way through it, to try to ignore

:48:57. > :49:02.everything going on around those two. The final was a slightly

:49:02. > :49:12.bizarre day, the village cleared out, the 1,500m was on the last day,

:49:12. > :49:22.Steve Everett and his coach, Harry, got in the lift and it was a little

:49:22. > :49:22.

:49:22. > :49:28.bit frosty and some polite exchanges and then we got down -- Steve Ovett

:49:28. > :49:32.and then Sebastian Coe had a car. Two different approaches. We asked

:49:32. > :49:42.where Sebastien was, why isn't he warming up? And going into the

:49:42. > :49:45.call-up room, the other a double -- the other eight of us watching them

:49:45. > :49:50.go through and walking into the arena and thinking, this is what I

:49:50. > :49:55.wanted, this is the Olympic final, 80,000 people, and all the cameras

:49:55. > :50:00.trained on those two but we were just delighted to be there and even

:50:00. > :50:04.when I got to the start line, I kept thinking, this is the Olympic final

:50:04. > :50:07.and the gun went and I was still going, this is the Olympic final so

:50:07. > :50:14.I was immediately last, and I didn't improve on that much during the

:50:15. > :50:22.race, to be fair. Coe gets the revenge he wants. I crossed the

:50:23. > :50:32.line, Sebastian Coe was on the ground, I made some noises and went

:50:33. > :50:34.

:50:34. > :50:39.to congratulate Ovett and then I saw Ovett getting up, and sometimes you

:50:39. > :50:42.don't know what happens. It was an incredible learning experience, the

:50:42. > :50:48.whole thing for me, particularly because of those two were going

:50:48. > :50:52.through, and so going through that. I might not have had some of the

:50:52. > :51:02.successes I had if I did not go to Moscow so it has a good place in my

:51:02. > :51:04.

:51:04. > :51:11.athletics heart, it was an important session tomorrow, you get a chance

:51:11. > :51:20.to see a fantastic documentary on BBC Two at 6:30pm, Moscow 1980: The

:51:20. > :51:24.Cold War Olympics which is well worth a watch. There is a morning

:51:24. > :51:29.session, though and you can tune in as normal at 6:15am. Paula Radcliffe

:51:29. > :51:35.has joined as, we have the semifinals of the 50 millimetres and

:51:35. > :51:39.the 3,000m steeplechase coming up but let's talk about that golden

:51:39. > :51:48.area -- the semifinals of the 1,500m. People having tussles in

:51:48. > :51:51.that golden era, Cram, Coe and Ovett. We were good at those events.

:51:51. > :51:56.Yes, they were my idols, I was starting out looking up to that and

:51:56. > :51:59.you see the rivalry and you think, then I assumed it was always going

:51:59. > :52:02.to carry on in Britain and I can remember as a child going down to

:52:03. > :52:07.Crystal Palace and queueing up to watch them and they queueing up

:52:07. > :52:10.afterwards to try to get the autograph and being really excited

:52:11. > :52:15.to be at races where they were taking part and being able to absorb

:52:15. > :52:22.that. And for me to be able to sit next to them in the commentary box,

:52:22. > :52:26.that is special. Did you never get the autograph them? I did, I did!

:52:26. > :52:30.Sometimes I was more interested in watching the races. And that is why

:52:30. > :52:34.I waited because I got to the front of the queue and then they go.

:52:34. > :52:39.will nip out because the pole vault competition is hotting up, largely

:52:39. > :52:49.down to one lady, Elaine at Isinbayeva, the sweetheart of

:52:49. > :52:50.

:52:50. > :53:00.Russian athletics, -- Elaine at Isinbayeva. She looked absolutely

:53:00. > :53:01.

:53:01. > :53:05.brilliant in qualifying for this result in the London Olympics, she

:53:05. > :53:08.got a bronze medal but she is quite disappointed about that and then she

:53:08. > :53:13.took some time out but now she is back in front of her home crowd.

:53:13. > :53:15.This, her first vault of the competition and rather like

:53:15. > :53:25.Lavillenie, the red-hot favourite in the men's competition yesterday, her

:53:25. > :53:32.

:53:32. > :53:39.woman who set so many world records, 15 in total, twice a world

:53:39. > :53:44.champion, toys and Olympic champion as well. And synonymous with

:53:44. > :53:48.excellence in track and field. GABBY LOGAN: Katarina

:53:48. > :53:54.Johnson-Thompson who is looking to be the new queen of British

:53:54. > :53:59.heptathlon, Jessica is not ready to go yet, she is suffering from an

:53:59. > :54:02.injury but our heritage of multi-eventing is looking in good

:54:02. > :54:08.hands because she has had a good Championships and that shot put was

:54:08. > :54:12.the blip. PBs all the way since then. Yes, and everything happens in

:54:12. > :54:16.its right time. She is still developing, so much room for her to

:54:16. > :54:20.grow and what was important for these championships is her targets,

:54:20. > :54:28.as she was to finish inside the top eight. We can safely say she will

:54:28. > :54:32.take that box and compete extremely well. Back to Paul Dickinson.

:54:32. > :54:38.COMMENTATOR: There is another issue at stake here, she has a

:54:38. > :54:42.possibility, albeit an outside chance, of actually winning a medal.

:54:42. > :54:47.The calculators have been out with the points table being provided as

:54:47. > :54:53.she has got a chance. There is the line-up. All the top athletes the

:54:53. > :54:58.from the top nine places in the heptathlon after six events. Dafne

:54:58. > :55:04.Schippers in third place currently, Katarina Johnson-Thompson who is in

:55:04. > :55:14.fifth, Melnichenko, the overall leader, Klucinova Davin eighth

:55:14. > :55:22.place. Then the brilliant Belgian lying in ninth place. The Brianne

:55:22. > :55:27.Theisen Eaton, the early leader in this heptathlon competition, Claudia

:55:27. > :55:30.Rath who will be a big danger. She is the best 800m runner in this last

:55:30. > :55:36.group of heptathlete is going around two laps of the track. You could

:55:36. > :55:42.ever take everybody. Including Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Then

:55:42. > :55:51.Sharon Day of the USA, and the European champion, finally, Nana

:55:51. > :55:55.Djimou Ida. But Katarina has had a good two days. Melnichenko of the

:55:55. > :56:00.Ukraine surpassing everybody's expectations and she has got big

:56:00. > :56:08.support, particularly just round the Crown of the first bend. , they are

:56:08. > :56:12.all dressed in red and blue, the national colours of the Ukraine.

:56:12. > :56:22.Klucinova, the Czech Republic athlete, she is pretty useful aids

:56:22. > :56:22.

:56:22. > :56:26.metres runner, -- 800m runner. And Theisen Eaton, if you were with us

:56:27. > :56:32.while we interviewed her husband, he has already won the decathlon,

:56:32. > :56:37.Ashton Eaton. And there is the brilliant young talent of Thiam, 18

:56:37. > :56:40.years old, European junior champion, a name for the future, as is

:56:40. > :56:43.Katarina Johnson-Thompson. And at this stage I must mention a young

:56:43. > :56:48.lady back in the UK, who had very bad luck in the world youth

:56:48. > :56:54.Championships this year but Morgan Lake is the next of a long line of

:56:54. > :56:57.great talent coming out of the UK at the moment. . She is even better

:56:57. > :57:06.than Katarina Johnson-Thompson was at that age, she is an under 17

:57:06. > :57:11.athlete and she is excellent. The German, Claudia Rath, sixth place.

:57:11. > :57:14.And in terms of time being converted into points, Katarina

:57:14. > :57:20.Johnson-Thompson is only 0.4 seconds ahead of the German at the moment. I

:57:20. > :57:23.suspect what might happen is that Claudia Rath of Germany and

:57:23. > :57:30.Johnson-Thompson may go out hard and try to make the other athletes

:57:30. > :57:36.suffer. Sharon Day down in seventh place, a bit off the pace, she is

:57:36. > :57:42.only a two minute performer -- she is only 80 but 11 minute performer.

:57:42. > :57:49.And then Nana Djimou Ida, lifetime best of 2.15.94 but that was some

:57:49. > :57:56.time ago. But she as well has a chance of taking a medal. She is in

:57:56. > :57:59.fourth place. And effectively, 0.75 of a second behind Dafne Schippers

:57:59. > :58:08.of the Netherlands who is desperately trying to hang on to her

:58:08. > :58:12.medal position. Really is a question of timing. Melnichenko, the champion

:58:12. > :58:22.elect, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, who has surpassed all expectations.

:58:22. > :58:22.

:58:22. > :58:27.The final event of the heptathlon. What is she going to do. What is

:58:27. > :58:31.cloudier rather, the German going to do? This is a fascinating

:58:31. > :58:39.confrontation, Andrew, and who knows who will be the final medallist on

:58:39. > :58:43.the rostrum later on this evening? a fitting atmosphere, and

:58:43. > :58:49.Melnichenko has been roared on by those two large pockets of Ukrainian

:58:50. > :58:54.supporters but remember the times that have to be made here, a good

:58:54. > :58:59.runner, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, she will try to use the actions of

:59:00. > :59:04.other athletes. And Theisen Eaton there has hit the front and she has

:59:04. > :59:09.to be Melnichenko by almost five seconds which is a very tall order,

:59:09. > :59:19.her personal best is better, much better bet in a race situation, that

:59:19. > :59:22.does not always work out that way. It is interesting that number check

:59:22. > :59:27.so -- that Melnichenko is try to stick to her like glue.

:59:27. > :59:31.Johnson-Thompson is in fourth place, Theisen Eaton is not making any move

:59:31. > :59:37.at the moment. She is still there in first place and Claudia Rath, the

:59:37. > :59:47.German is in second. She is really going for it, the German. ,

:59:47. > :59:47.

:59:47. > :59:52.Katarina, dig in, dig in hard. And there goes the German. It could be

:59:52. > :59:56.Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands who will suffer. The Dutch athlete

:59:56. > :00:00.is back in sixth place at the moment. Johnson-Thompson may be out

:00:00. > :00:06.of the medals, I fear, she has not done enough of the first 400m. But

:00:06. > :00:09.listen to the roaring going on here, Melnichenko will be the champion.

:00:09. > :00:15.Brianne Theisen Eaton will hang onto the silver medal. But Katarina is

:00:15. > :00:20.going for it. This is going to be fascinating. Katarina

:00:20. > :00:27.Johnson-Thompson will finish in second place, behind Claudia Rath,

:00:28. > :00:30.and I think the German has done enough to overtake the British

:00:30. > :00:36.athlete, Dafne Schippers goes down on the floor but I think we can

:00:36. > :00:42.confirm that Melnichenko is the champion. That there is no doubt,

:00:42. > :00:48.what in doubt is who has got silver and bronze, there is the champion.

:00:48. > :00:54.She has become world champion which is something that Natalia Dobriskey,

:00:54. > :00:57.so long the Ukrainian number one, never did. So there is a new star,

:00:57. > :01:03.Melnichenko who was not very fit in London last day, thought you could

:01:03. > :01:08.contend for a medal and in the end she had problems with ankle so a

:01:08. > :01:11.medal was not forthcoming and in the absence of Tatyana Chernova, the

:01:11. > :01:18.defending champion from Russia and our own Jessica Ennis-Hill, the

:01:18. > :01:24.Olympic champion, she is the champion. Ashton Eaton, decathlon

:01:24. > :01:26.champion, his wife, couldn't quite make it, Theisen Eaton, in terms of

:01:26. > :01:36.becoming the heptathlon champion. What do you think of that last

:01:36. > :02:01.

:02:01. > :02:06.she had to do and she came away with a personal best. Look at this,

:02:06. > :02:15.a new world champion. Ganna Melnichenko cannot believe it, but

:02:15. > :02:20.she has done brilliantly. Rising to the occasion. A lovely moment. She

:02:20. > :02:26.has been really on song for the last two days. Ashton Eaton got

:02:26. > :02:33.married earlier on this year. He is now married to a world championship

:02:33. > :02:40.silver medallist. Rihanna Tyson Eton has won a silver medal. She

:02:41. > :02:50.will start as favourite for the Commonwealth Games next year.

:02:50. > :02:58.Katarina Johnson-Thompson has set a personal best. It was a really

:02:58. > :03:01.gutsy performance by the Briton. Just behind Katarina Johnson-

:03:01. > :03:11.Thompson is Dafne Schippers trying desperately to hang onto her bronze

:03:11. > :03:14.

:03:14. > :03:24.medal. She is on the track receiving treatment. It is seven

:03:24. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:36.seconds off her personal best. A great run from Claudia Rath. Dafne

:03:36. > :03:40.Schippers was probably trying to stay in touch with Claudia Rath.

:03:40. > :03:49.All these athletes are still receiving treatment long after this

:03:49. > :03:54.happened. Dafne Schippers is a name for the future in multi- events.

:03:54. > :03:59.She specialised previously as a sprinter and she can run. Once she

:03:59. > :04:08.gets used to the technical aspects of multi- event, she is going to do

:04:08. > :04:18.extremely well. What a great two days Katarina Johnson-Thompson has

:04:18. > :04:18.

:04:18. > :04:22.had. Rihanna ties and eaten, well over 6500 points. It is silver and

:04:22. > :04:32.gold for the family in the decathlon and just out in the

:04:32. > :04:32.

:04:32. > :05:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:05:16. > :05:26.women's pole vault final is still under way. Silke Spiegelburg is a

:05:26. > :05:37.

:05:37. > :05:47.very fine Voltaire. She is the German record holder. 4.65. Elena

:05:47. > :05:48.

:05:48. > :05:58.Isinbaeva had a foul at this height. This is the Olympic silver

:05:58. > :06:04.

:06:04. > :06:11.medallist. She has got a problem. Looking over to the coach as if to

:06:11. > :06:21.say, what happened there? Only she knows. She missed her run up

:06:21. > :06:31.entirely. Fabiana Murer won this world championship unexpectedly two

:06:31. > :06:58.

:06:58. > :07:08.This final is really hotting up now. Remember is set -- Elena Isinbaeva

:07:08. > :07:26.

:07:26. > :07:31.times she has won the Russian Indoor Championship, which in

:07:31. > :07:41.itself is a great achievement such is the strength and depth in

:07:41. > :07:44.

:07:44. > :07:49.Russian pole-vaulting. Three athletes clear at this height. What

:07:49. > :07:55.can the Queen of pole-vault do at this second attempt. It is unusual

:07:55. > :08:05.for her to have to take a second attempt at any height. She mentally

:08:05. > :08:23.

:08:23. > :08:33.confidence now for what is to come. That is the battle for medals. Four

:08:33. > :08:43.athletes clear. Jennifer Suhr, the American No. 1, has passed at this

:08:43. > :09:20.

:09:20. > :09:30.bad running family, a dynasty. Tirunesh Dibaba was one of the

:09:30. > :09:44.

:09:44. > :09:50.greatest of all time. Look out for Genzebe Dibaba. There is the

:09:50. > :09:53.Russian and this stadium has got very lively indeed, Brendan. There

:09:54. > :10:03.is a big crowd and these athletes are looking forward to running in

:10:04. > :10:11.

:10:11. > :10:16.front of them. Siham Hilali is going to be a bit of a danger. Five

:10:16. > :10:26.to qualify and the two fastest losers. I think there is more

:10:26. > :10:43.

:10:43. > :10:48.talent in the second heat. Nancy Langat is the Olympic champion.

:10:48. > :10:58.Faith Kipyegon looks like a diminutive athlete, but she will be

:10:58. > :11:05.challenging and in the final. Being the first of the semi-finals they

:11:05. > :11:15.do not know what pace is required. If in doubt, go quickly. That is a

:11:15. > :11:19.

:11:19. > :11:24.good policy. Zoe Buckman, the Australian, is in second place.

:11:24. > :11:28.Mary Cain, the talented young American, moves up on the outside.

:11:29. > :11:35.She is much more involved in this race than she was in the first

:11:35. > :11:39.round. Also there is Nancy Langat, the Olympic champion and

:11:39. > :11:49.Commonwealth champion, and being followed by her team-mates, Faith

:11:49. > :11:49.

:11:49. > :11:56.Kipyegon. Mary Cain is in a nice position. Dibaba with a beautiful

:11:56. > :12:01.action and that style. It seems to run in the family. She saw her

:12:01. > :12:06.sister become the most successful individual in the history of female

:12:06. > :12:16.athletics. This young lady was really keen to run against her

:12:16. > :12:19.

:12:19. > :12:29.sister, but the selectors said no. Her sister is in the 10,000. Faith

:12:29. > :12:36.Kipyegon is moving up nicely at the moment. Hannah England goes in the

:12:36. > :12:41.next heat. Mary Cain is in the heart of the group. She did run

:12:41. > :12:47.naively in the first-round heats. She is still a youngster. She has

:12:47. > :12:56.got a good finish. She is the youngest ever American in the World

:12:56. > :13:02.Championships. Mary Decker was a young talent like Mary Cain and she

:13:02. > :13:08.went on to become world champion. Mary Cain will become world

:13:08. > :13:14.champion one day, but not in these championships. The first five and

:13:14. > :13:19.the two fastest losers. There is a lot of them there as they come into

:13:19. > :13:24.the home straight. They are juggling for position. They are

:13:24. > :13:32.beginning to make their move. Nancy Langat, the Olympic champion, on

:13:32. > :13:38.the outside. Debar but only has one chance here. Can she finish in the

:13:38. > :13:48.style of her sister? Mary Cain has that strong finish, but it is

:13:48. > :13:51.

:13:51. > :13:59.crowded. Dibaba looks easy and comfortable. Faith Kipyegon is

:13:59. > :14:08.trying to go with her. That lap was a little slower, but now they are

:14:08. > :14:14.releasing their runs. Now it is about positioning. Mary Cain is

:14:14. > :14:22.waiting on the outside. Faith Kipyegon is putting herself in with

:14:22. > :14:30.a chance as well. The crowd are trying to lift the two Russians.

:14:30. > :14:34.Podosenova is on the inside. Here comes the Mary Cain, the 17 year-

:14:35. > :14:43.old, trying to become the youngest ever ate middle-distance runner. It

:14:43. > :14:50.is a furious finish. Only five go through it automatically. My

:14:50. > :14:57.goodness, sort that one out. What a finish from Zoe Buckman from

:14:57. > :15:03.Australia. She was very lucky there was an opportunity on the inside.

:15:03. > :15:13.That was extremely impressive from the Australian. Dibaba is holding

:15:13. > :15:13.

:15:13. > :15:23.that position. There is no luckier athlete today than Zoe Buckman.

:15:23. > :15:25.

:15:25. > :15:30.Faith Kipyegon is looking good. There is Faith Kipyegon. Zoe

:15:30. > :15:38.Buckman shocked a few people in that race. That was a great

:15:38. > :15:48.performance from her. Mary came just stop it. The Olympic champion

:15:48. > :16:01.

:16:01. > :16:10.trying to hold form. Genzebe Dibaba just fading there, Mary Cain just

:16:10. > :16:14.settling in and relaxing. Well, that was a good performance by Mary Cain,

:16:14. > :16:21.an impressive performance by Zoe Buckman and an impressive

:16:21. > :16:24.performance by the Kenyan, Kipyegon. And I think this final is

:16:24. > :16:29.going to be pretty exciting because a couple of those athletes have got

:16:29. > :16:35.chances. The Riyadh, Korobkina from Russia

:16:35. > :16:44.going through, Mary Cain goes through as well and Langat will have

:16:44. > :16:48.to wait. This pole vault competition, the final of the

:16:48. > :16:57.women's competition is turning out to be a cracker. Another Russian on

:16:57. > :17:06.the runway. Angelina Zhuk-Krasnova. Plenty of time left on the clock.

:17:06. > :17:15.4.65 and she gets it. Only a little bit behind her lifetime best, so she

:17:15. > :17:19.has produced their best when it matters the most. We have also got

:17:19. > :17:23.Yarisley Silva robbed Cuba on the third and final attempt. Three

:17:23. > :17:32.athletes cleared it first time. Isinbayeva on her second attempt and

:17:32. > :17:39.now another Russian in the mix. The next target will be a height she has

:17:39. > :17:45.never cleared. The previous attempt of 4.65 for the Olympic silver

:17:45. > :17:48.medallist, Yarisley Silva of Cuba was a shocking attempts at humour

:17:48. > :17:58.ring all her experience to bear if she will make this count and stay in

:17:58. > :17:59.

:18:00. > :18:03.this final. As she gets it. A lovely vault, so much pressure when you

:18:03. > :18:11.have got that at any height but especially when it is to stay in the

:18:11. > :18:15.hunt for medals at a major championship final. Lovely vault by

:18:15. > :18:25.Yarisley Silva, I am sure she can go higher but she will have to she will

:18:25. > :18:33.

:18:33. > :18:43.win this. Those two attempts where champion. 4.75 now is the target for

:18:43. > :18:48.

:18:48. > :18:58.the world-record holder, Yelena Makes it look so, so easy when it is

:18:58. > :18:58.

:18:58. > :19:01.going well. She said earlier on in July that her career will finish

:19:01. > :19:08.100% at the World Championships. But I have to tell you, she has changed

:19:09. > :19:13.her mind. More about that later on. The world-record holder is safely

:19:13. > :19:17.clear and she has now taken an advantage over the rest. Building to

:19:17. > :19:22.a great climax in the stadium tonight, and Hannah England trying

:19:22. > :19:30.to compose herself. It is very loud, a great atmosphere, she has to focus

:19:30. > :19:34.now on the next three .75 laps. She has seen the first semifinal run in

:19:34. > :19:37.about 4.5, she has to come the top five here. Probably be slightly more

:19:37. > :19:43.difficult semifinal but not much to choose because there are two big

:19:43. > :19:51.names in this, Abeba Aregawi Sweden and the defending champion, and the

:19:51. > :19:55.world number one. And Hellen Onsando Obiri of Kenya. But capable of going

:19:55. > :20:05.through, Hannah England. She got the silver two years ago at the World

:20:05. > :20:08.

:20:08. > :20:18.go? Who should be OK, shouldn't she? I hope so, but on paper, this is the

:20:18. > :20:18.

:20:18. > :20:22.harder heat -- semifinal but she has to go better than she did. She

:20:22. > :20:27.looked really nervous the other morning. Fingers crossed. I am told

:20:27. > :20:35.she was relaxed around the team hotel today. I think she knows she

:20:35. > :20:40.is in good shape. She went straight after the trials and join the rest

:20:40. > :20:46.of the team in Barcelona at the training camp. Jenny Simpson coming

:20:46. > :20:55.back to the sort of form that saw her win, a very tactical race, two

:20:55. > :21:03.years ago in Daegu. All four people from that race here in the second

:21:03. > :21:08.semifinal. The Kenyan champion has had a great year, and this is the

:21:08. > :21:13.world number one, from Ethiopia and now running for Sweden, she has been

:21:13. > :21:19.preparing for this race in Ethiopia and she is in supreme form this

:21:19. > :21:22.year. I cannot see anybody apart from any falls, and I will bring

:21:22. > :21:30.Brandon in on that, because the last couple of World Championships, there

:21:30. > :21:35.have been plenty of falls. So Hannah England, let's hope it is safe here,

:21:35. > :21:45.and with the first one being a 4.5, I hope somebody stretches it out.

:21:45. > :21:47.

:21:47. > :21:53.The two fastest loser spots have seen what happened, but there

:21:53. > :21:56.are not too many frontrunners here and there may be a bit of reticence

:21:56. > :22:05.to go to the front because everybody in there, people like Simpson and

:22:05. > :22:08.Hannah England and Rodriguez, and Abeba Aregawi, lots of people can

:22:08. > :22:11.kick. People will think about finishing in the first five, forget

:22:11. > :22:14.about the time because Hannah England has a powerful finish as she

:22:14. > :22:24.demonstrated on the way to that silver medal, she came from way down

:22:24. > :22:28.the straight, racing on through and there is the blue of Aregawi, she

:22:28. > :22:31.has impressed all the time this season, she has been incredibly good

:22:31. > :22:35.and the Hannah England, settles into the back and I thought she looked

:22:36. > :22:40.really controlled at the start line, sometimes she looks nervous but I

:22:40. > :22:43.gather she is in good spirits. She is ready to run a good race and she

:22:43. > :22:53.is on the inside, not doing anything special and not worrying too much

:22:53. > :22:53.

:22:54. > :22:57.and hopefully not worrying about her pace at all. It is slow, 66.8. The

:22:57. > :23:02.first semifinal bit slow on the second and third lap and made the

:23:02. > :23:12.state then. This is when accidents can happen, the one surprised by

:23:12. > :23:13.

:23:13. > :23:22.Jessica Judd in the European team Championships, Sharmina. We know all

:23:22. > :23:25.about Obiri, and Lakhouad is in there as well. You can throw a

:23:25. > :23:30.blanket over them at the moment. That is the problem. Especially with

:23:30. > :23:34.athletes when they decide that they need to take a bit of a better

:23:34. > :23:37.position two laps to go. They are getting even tighter, and then

:23:37. > :23:40.they'll start running onto the inside, trying to get the shortest

:23:40. > :23:44.route that sometimes when they are going slowly, it does not really

:23:44. > :23:47.matter. Hannah England is getting an easy ride on the inside and that is

:23:48. > :23:54.good news. She is in a good position. She must start to come in

:23:54. > :23:57.more and more and become more aware. And Aregawi know she will end up in

:23:57. > :24:07.a good position so on this back straight, it is about an opportunity

:24:07. > :24:08.

:24:08. > :24:11.to settle it out. Hannah England is looking for the inside run. This is

:24:11. > :24:17.sometimes a worry for Hannah England, you have to be aware of

:24:17. > :24:27.where Aregawi is, there is no guarantee of a gap. Hannah England

:24:27. > :24:28.

:24:28. > :24:37.is trusting her judgement but she will have to hope for a gap.

:24:37. > :24:42.Sharmina leads. Hannah needs to get past the Polish athlete, she needs

:24:42. > :24:46.to squeeze through now. Got another lucky run there on the inside.

:24:46. > :24:52.Sharmina moving along, Hannah England in a decent pace but look at

:24:52. > :24:57.them all and the bell sounds, Aregawi is poised there, the Kenyan

:24:57. > :25:01.Obiri is poised there. Will Hannah gets another bit of luck? Would like

:25:01. > :25:04.to see Hannah England in the final and now it is beginning to open up,

:25:04. > :25:07.now Hannah England must concentrate on the back straight. We know how

:25:07. > :25:11.strong she is in the finishing straight, she needs to be in a good

:25:11. > :25:14.position when she comes into that. She is doing this beautiful, getting

:25:14. > :25:19.the timing and getting the run and now she is running herself into a

:25:19. > :25:23.qualifying position. Hannah looking relaxed but there is lots of work to

:25:23. > :25:33.do, Rodriguez is behind her, but only if I go through and Hannah

:25:33. > :25:36.

:25:37. > :25:42.England in fifth at the moment. -- only five go through. Sharmina and

:25:42. > :25:46.Hannah England in a qualifying position. She needs to hold off the

:25:46. > :25:53.Canadian who is finishing strongly, but it is Aregawi, Katsiaryna

:25:53. > :26:03.Netsviatayeva, Simpson, Sharmina and Hannah England through to the final

:26:03. > :26:09.

:26:09. > :26:13.-- it is Aregawi, Obiri, Simpson. Well done, Hannah England. She had

:26:13. > :26:19.to be in the top five as she was. She is through to the final. Fifth

:26:20. > :26:26.was good enough for Hannah England, Aregawi looking good, Simpson

:26:26. > :26:29.looking good and then the Kenyan, Obiri. Sharmina and then Hannah

:26:29. > :26:34.England got a couple of breaks, a couple of inside runs, concentrated,

:26:34. > :26:39.and you could see on the bend, she was beginning to relax but this

:26:39. > :26:45.athlete, Aregawi, the former Ethiopian now running for Sweden and

:26:45. > :26:53.living in Sweden looks comfortable and good. There is Sharmina and

:26:53. > :26:57.Hannah England is good in the finishing straight that I think

:26:57. > :27:01.Obiri is trying to challenge the, Jenny Simpson working for it and

:27:01. > :27:11.Obiri working for it, Sharmina dropping off a little bit and there

:27:11. > :27:17.

:27:17. > :27:23.she goes across the line, well done, that the gaps opened up. We were a

:27:23. > :27:28.little bit nervous. Paula, what did you make of that? Guess, I was a bit

:27:28. > :27:32.nervous and definitely, Aregawi looks very comfortable. They are

:27:32. > :27:36.checking back a little bit, Hannah England had it come to be, she had

:27:37. > :27:40.to check herself and suddenly pulled out in front of her and that cost

:27:40. > :27:44.her a little bit of energy and coming into the home straight, we

:27:44. > :27:49.knew she was the fifth and she was not tried to give it all here, she

:27:49. > :27:56.has got more left and she will also grow in confidence. But she must go

:27:56. > :28:06.out for the final and just run her final and run the race. Safely

:28:06. > :28:07.

:28:07. > :28:11.through, I am sure she will be Paul was talking over those replays,

:28:11. > :28:16.when it comes to the final, you can go out and run your race, give it a

:28:16. > :28:23.go, give it your all. Yes, the final has been my aim all this crazy

:28:23. > :28:27.training sessions during the winter, and I am really happy. We know how

:28:27. > :28:32.much strength and depth there is in your event, and you are one of the

:28:32. > :28:39.first ball finishes in Daegu, so that was a tough one. -- first four

:28:39. > :28:44.finishers. The heat before, it was so close, the semifinal was so close

:28:44. > :28:47.and that may be nervous, I was just worried about the last 50 metres. I

:28:47. > :28:52.think I got a bit tense in the last 100, desperately worried somebody

:28:52. > :28:57.was going to come past me but I am glad I pulled it off. When you set

:28:57. > :29:02.yourself a goal and achieve it, you must be so proud. Yes, and the only

:29:02. > :29:09.final I failed to make in my career was last year at the Olympics and I

:29:09. > :29:14.thought if I can keep this record going, keep making finals. And I

:29:14. > :29:20.also got a promise to fix the pedal on my bike if I made the final so I

:29:20. > :29:25.am pleased about that. Well done, Hannah. Thank you for the support at

:29:25. > :29:35.home. Surely she deserves a new bike! She is in the World

:29:35. > :29:39.

:29:39. > :29:44.well but the favourite must be Aregawi. The second highest pole

:29:44. > :29:50.vault in history now, Jennifer Suhr of the United States, just about to

:29:50. > :29:54.take her second attempt in the competition. Everybody else was

:29:54. > :30:03.finding it difficult at 4.65, she passed on that height, so can she do

:30:03. > :30:08.this again? Yes, she can! The American matches Yelena Isinbayeva.

:30:08. > :30:16.And immediately, she rushes to the top of the leaderboard, Isinbayeva

:30:17. > :30:20.have a failure at 4.65. And that has begun to cut against her. I wonder

:30:20. > :30:24.if we will see any sort of records here tonight. Isinbayeva broke the

:30:24. > :30:34.world record when she first won the World Championships Way back in

:30:34. > :30:51.

:30:51. > :30:55.Helsinki and she now has Jennifer 100m held last night, or coerced.

:30:55. > :31:00.There is probably more people in here tonight than their awards for

:31:00. > :31:04.the race, which is good pull start the defending champion was

:31:04. > :31:14.Carmelita Jeter and she put up a stout defence considering all the

:31:14. > :31:34.

:31:34. > :31:43.problems she had. Was it 1984 her Olympic gold medal? The Americans

:31:43. > :31:49.came up with lots of new talent, English Gardner, Octavius Freeman.

:31:49. > :31:59.But it was a new figure that got on to the rostrum. She seemed happy

:31:59. > :32:09.last night. It has been a tough year for her. At one point not many

:32:09. > :32:14.

:32:14. > :32:24.people would have expected to see this. 10 pull it 95. Gold two years

:32:24. > :32:29.

:32:29. > :32:39.ago, bronze at this time of. The fast starting Ivory Coast athlete

:32:39. > :32:58.

:32:58. > :33:08.has got better and better or yeah. any question he was going to win,

:33:08. > :33:15.

:33:15. > :33:25.barring a false start. 10 pullets 71. The fastest in the world this

:33:25. > :33:26.

:33:26. > :33:36.year. Simply supreme. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica.

:33:36. > :33:36.

:33:36. > :34:44.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:34:45. > :34:50.Beautifully colour co-ordinated as Jamaican national anthem. Shelly-

:34:50. > :35:00.Ann Fraser-Pryce is getting a bit used to this now. It was one of her

:35:00. > :35:00.

:35:01. > :35:05.most dominant performances. It was a great night last night. We all

:35:05. > :35:13.have concentrated on Christine Ohuruogu, but she is a big start of

:35:13. > :35:18.this sport. Another gold medal for her. Who is going to win the gold

:35:18. > :35:28.medal in the 1,500m on Thursday. It was a very good run from the

:35:28. > :35:29.

:35:29. > :35:37.Australian. The second semi-final had the main contenders. Abeba

:35:37. > :35:47.Aregawi had her head and shoulders above the rest.

:35:47. > :35:48.

:35:48. > :35:55.We have seen two athletes go clear at 4.75. The German record holder.

:35:55. > :36:05.She goes clear at the first attempt. This is one of her best global

:36:05. > :36:08.

:36:08. > :36:15.championships. She has looked superb throughout this final. She

:36:15. > :36:22.is really up for this competition. This season's best for her. But the

:36:22. > :36:32.medals will be won at high rates even higher than this. The Cuban

:36:32. > :36:39.

:36:39. > :36:49.had a terrible experience at 4.65. She is clear and still in there

:36:49. > :36:56.fighting. That is four athletes clear at this height. The silver

:36:56. > :37:03.medallist in the Olympic Games, but only 5th in the last final in Daegu.

:37:03. > :37:13.She has made remarkable progress over the last 12 months. She is now

:37:13. > :37:21.

:37:21. > :37:26.the third highest pole vaulter in out to the right hand side. She

:37:26. > :37:31.could not get the penetration she required. Her reign as world

:37:31. > :37:40.champion is over pulls back certainly one of the favourites

:37:40. > :37:50.before this competition began. It is back to the drawing board for

:37:50. > :37:53.

:37:53. > :37:58.the Brazilian superstar of pole- vaulting. Andrew Osagie made the

:37:58. > :38:03.Olympic final last year. Who ran a personal best in one of the classic

:38:03. > :38:09.races. He will be running in a few minutes' time.

:38:09. > :38:19.You will not miss anything from that 800m race. The poor pulp is

:38:19. > :38:25.

:38:25. > :38:30.reaching a crucial stage now. -- the pole vault. There is a chink in

:38:30. > :38:38.her arm and she has proved it at this height. The first athlete to

:38:38. > :38:43.attempt this height. Jennifer Suhr has got it all to do. Can the

:38:43. > :38:47.American take the advantage? No Romoli her technique is so solid.

:38:47. > :38:57.Her training has been brilliant by all accounts, but she needs to go

:38:57. > :39:15.

:39:15. > :39:21.have an intriguing race. A lot of men in this field will be thinking

:39:22. > :39:29.they can win a medal. Pierre Ambroise bus had had a great year.

:39:29. > :39:35.I think Andrew essentially -- Andrew Osagie has done very well to

:39:35. > :39:41.make this final. We are expecting a fast race, but I am expecting a

:39:41. > :39:50.close race. In the end they were all the finishing hard. This is the

:39:50. > :40:00.man they will all be chasing down, the number one in the world. The

:40:00. > :40:05.

:40:05. > :40:15.800m final. Nick Symons of the USA is a fast finisher. Everywhere you

:40:15. > :40:27.

:40:27. > :40:31.look there are people with A fast opening 200m. We might have

:40:31. > :40:36.the world record holder missing, but there is Andrew Osagie in the

:40:36. > :40:46.race was stopped but we have got the fastest man in the world this

:40:46. > :40:57.

:40:57. > :41:06.year. Duane Solomon. Nick Symmonds is moving strongly. Duane Solomon

:41:06. > :41:16.is going straggly and Nick Symmonds is fouling him. They are all

:41:16. > :41:24.

:41:24. > :41:34.waiting to strike. Watch out for Ayanleh Souleiman. Mohammed is also

:41:34. > :41:36.

:41:36. > :41:43.a fading. Mohammed Aman is the world No. No 1. It is gold for him.

:41:43. > :41:49.It is silver for a Nick Symmonds. Ayanleh Souleiman takes the bronze.

:41:49. > :41:54.He looked ragged in the heats and tired in the semi-final. He is the

:41:54. > :42:00.world's number one, and he is now the world champion. The Ethiopian

:42:00. > :42:06.tined a perfectly. Well done, it Nick Symmonds. He should be happy

:42:06. > :42:10.with a medal, but he probably thought he could win it. Andrew a

:42:10. > :42:17.sad GA has done brilliantly to get himself into the final because he

:42:17. > :42:21.had all sorts of injury problems leading up to this. But in the end

:42:21. > :42:31.we should not be surprised that it is Mohammed Aman who has come out

:42:31. > :42:32.

:42:32. > :42:36.on top. Duane Solomon looked strong in the finishing straight. Nick

:42:36. > :42:41.Symmonds almost thought at that point that it was his victory. And

:42:41. > :42:50.FIFA, the favourite before the race, who looked poor in the semi-final,

:42:50. > :43:00.comes across the line. What a glorious victory for Ethiopia. That

:43:00. > :43:10.is brilliant and a very good finish. Andrew or sad year it was in 5th

:43:10. > :43:11.

:43:11. > :43:21.place, and that is the best he has run all season. Poem that was

:43:21. > :43:29.

:43:29. > :43:38.runners, but this is the first great middle-distance runner from

:43:38. > :43:47.Ethiopia. This is a strong, young man from Ethiopia. He is only 19

:43:47. > :43:53.years of age and he has matured very quickly. Addis Ababa would be

:43:53. > :44:00.a great place to be. They have never had a chance at that event

:44:00. > :44:10.before it. He was the world in return p and last year. Now he is

:44:10. > :44:23.

:44:23. > :44:32.at the world champion. A season's Assessed the race from a

:44:32. > :44:40.perspective. I never thought I would be happy finishing 5th. I was

:44:40. > :44:46.aiming to run about 1.44, but I was a bit quicker. I am happy with it.

:44:46. > :44:56.I am a bit frustrated. Then they be was a medal up for grabs if I was

:44:56. > :45:04.in better shape. I did my best. in the world on the kind of bold

:45:04. > :45:10.that you have had. I am trying to keep my feet on the ground and

:45:10. > :45:19.working hired in spite of all the problems. Or I did was come here

:45:19. > :45:25.today and give 100%. I thank everybody, all the staff, the coach,

:45:25. > :45:35.the physios, my girlfriend and everyone at home. Up a well done,

:45:35. > :45:57.

:45:57. > :46:04.and. This is the pole vault behind stadium has heard since the

:46:04. > :46:09.championships began. That is superb. Every time her name is announced in

:46:09. > :46:15.the stadium at she does not have to do anything, but she receives a

:46:15. > :46:22.huge applause from this predominantly Moscow crowd for a

:46:22. > :46:32.stock she is now in first place. The second attempt. Can she go

:46:32. > :47:05.

:47:05. > :47:08.tonight. She's living up to it at the moment. Let's talk about

:47:08. > :47:11.Andrew's race. To come into this without the kind of season he would

:47:11. > :47:13.have liked, not able to run the time he ran last year in the Olympics and

:47:13. > :47:15.perform the way he has, we have a real championship runner there. He

:47:15. > :47:18.raises his game in the major championships. What he's learned

:47:18. > :47:28.this year is how to manage your body. How to learn, how much

:47:28. > :47:31.

:47:31. > :47:34.preparation you need to be championship ready. To make sure

:47:34. > :47:36.that you are competitive. That is what he did. He hung back, he

:47:36. > :47:39.assessed the race, he made sure he stuck to his race plan. When the

:47:39. > :47:42.moment came for him to strike, he was there, he was ready and it was

:47:42. > :47:52.decisive. We've talked so much this week already about running through

:47:52. > :47:54.

:47:54. > :47:57.the line. Osagie made sure he got that extra place. Solomon, we knew

:47:57. > :48:01.he was going to go out hard, but he will have to do perhaps review the

:48:01. > :48:09.way he did that. I think so. I don't think they run as a team, but his

:48:09. > :48:12.race plan suited Nick Symmonds, and he very nearly won it. I was talking

:48:12. > :48:16.to Andrew's coach yesterday and he said if you can find that extra half

:48:16. > :48:19.a second, I think he can get there and not be stepping up, finishing

:48:19. > :48:26.where he finished last year in the Olympics. He did that. He found more

:48:26. > :48:29.than that. I think he will grow in confidence from that because he will

:48:29. > :48:34.look at it and see what he did off the preparation he's had which has

:48:34. > :48:44.been very limited. Will know with working hard, he can go up and

:48:44. > :49:04.

:49:04. > :49:06.challenge them. I'm guessing when you have a performance like that

:49:06. > :49:09.when you have exceeded your own expectations, it motivates you going

:49:09. > :49:11.into a tough winter's training. You think, if I can get things right and

:49:11. > :49:13.I'm bit, where can my times go? will also be frustrated from

:49:13. > :49:16.everything that's happened this year. He got food poisoning,

:49:16. > :49:19.hamstring injury. Those things will fire him up to make sure he looks

:49:19. > :49:29.after things really well during the winter to stay healthy. But he will

:49:29. > :49:34.

:49:34. > :49:36.also grow in confidence from that, because he knows he did that of very

:49:36. > :49:38.little training. Greene sometimes athletes had to accept a good

:49:38. > :49:42.performance and not dissected to its nth degree. He should be very

:49:42. > :49:43.pleased with what he's achieved. Like you said, it's a long winter.

:49:43. > :49:46.He knows that. It's about keeping his health intact. I'm sure he will

:49:46. > :49:48.look forward to a great season next year. Nick Symmonds said he was

:49:48. > :49:50.desperate for a medal on the global desperate for a medal on the global

:49:50. > :50:00.stage, it he's missed out so many times. Congratulations to him. The

:50:00. > :50:21.

:50:21. > :50:24.pole vault competition is really it. She looks full of confidence.

:50:24. > :50:26.She is 31, exactly the same age as Isinbayeva. So far, the only

:50:26. > :50:30.difference between the two is Isinbayeva had one failure early on

:50:30. > :50:32.at 4.65. They both took two clearances to go over 4.82. So

:50:32. > :50:42.Jennifer Suhr is now in poll position, Isinbayeva in second

:50:42. > :50:50.

:50:50. > :50:59.place. Good performance by the others vaulted. She has got to

:50:59. > :51:09.really get it this time. She was high enough. The depth of her vault

:51:09. > :51:17.

:51:17. > :51:27.is not sufficient. She took it off than just going high. Silva, just

:51:27. > :51:35.

:51:35. > :51:45.one more attempt left if she wants a training outside of running, off the

:51:45. > :51:50.

:51:50. > :51:53.track. She has had to use cross trainers and to get to this vinyl is

:51:53. > :51:55.a big achievement for her. A very big achievement. She's had a serious

:51:55. > :51:58.shin injury. She's been doing her track sessions but everything else

:51:58. > :52:07.around that has been on the cross trainer. To come out and performing

:52:07. > :52:09.this is brilliant. Let's hope she is able to recover and can perform now.

:52:10. > :52:12.She is from great stock. Her mum, Liz, a world champion, Olympic

:52:12. > :52:18.silver medallist as well. Don't forget her dad is the Northern

:52:18. > :52:28.Ireland record-holder in the steeplechase. Let's go down to

:52:28. > :52:52.

:52:52. > :52:57.you talk about the parentage of chance here because the defending

:52:57. > :53:07.champion had to withdraw, the Russian. She hit a problem in

:53:07. > :53:19.

:53:19. > :53:28.Milcah Chemos last night. They are nervous about the Ethiopians today.

:53:28. > :53:38.I'm not surprised, Assefa has been looking particularly good. Eilish

:53:38. > :53:40.

:53:40. > :53:42.McColgan, for me, she wins a prize. Three weeks ago she was advised not

:53:42. > :53:52.to run in these championships because of the injury she has. If

:53:52. > :54:02.

:54:02. > :54:12.anything runs in that family it is and Isinbayeva. At least the Olympic

:54:12. > :54:21.

:54:21. > :54:23.silver medallist is assured of a medallists. We don't know which

:54:23. > :54:27.order they are going to finish in. Spiegelburg, the German, has gone

:54:27. > :54:37.out. She was ahead of the Cuban. But Silva has guaranteed herself a place

:54:37. > :54:48.

:54:48. > :54:58.challenge when you consider the East African presence of high calibre

:54:58. > :55:27.

:55:27. > :55:29.athletes. Cheywa is better known as heat. You wonder if the Ethiopians

:55:29. > :55:39.and the Kenyans will team up, some of them have the same management.

:55:39. > :56:07.

:56:07. > :56:10.of her right shin. It can only be because of the way she goes over the

:56:10. > :56:13.water jump. She has changed her style a little bit. She now tries to

:56:13. > :56:21.clear it, rather than stepping on it. She feels that is a little bit

:56:21. > :56:24.better for her in managing it. Again, she's not going to challenge

:56:24. > :56:26.for the medals, she is just here for computing. She will be enjoying the

:56:26. > :56:29.experience and trying to improve on her personal best that she set in

:56:29. > :56:35.the heats. I'm really pleased to see her in this event. 22 years and nine

:56:35. > :56:37.months ago she was born. 22 years ago, almost to the month, her

:56:37. > :56:41.mother, Liz, run one of the greatest distances in British athletics

:56:41. > :56:51.history. This young lady, she has certainly inherited her mother's

:56:51. > :56:57.

:56:57. > :57:02.determination. She has been so in the manner we would have

:57:02. > :57:12.expected. We spoke to the manager of channels last night. Her training

:57:12. > :57:15.

:57:15. > :57:24.partner, Chepkurui, is in there as pulling away already from the rest

:57:24. > :57:26.of the field. Neither Ethiopian or Kenya have won the women's

:57:26. > :57:36.steeplechase before. That is a really significant step. Let's go to

:57:36. > :57:44.

:57:44. > :57:54.She will once again try to take the advantage away from the American,

:57:54. > :58:16.

:58:16. > :58:22.Isinbayeva really on top of her game now. But can the American respond?

:58:22. > :58:29.World champion in 2007, world champion back in 2005. Two Olympic

:58:29. > :58:39.titles, numerous world records. Is this yet another world title for the

:58:39. > :58:45.

:58:45. > :58:55.great one, Yelena Isinbayeva of African demonstration. They have

:58:55. > :59:23.

:59:23. > :59:25.minutes and one second for the first 1000 metres. A Eilish McColgan is

:59:25. > :59:31.running a fine race at the back of that field. There's a second group,

:59:31. > :59:41.one athlete their own and the second group. Liz has done a great job in

:59:41. > :59:43.getting her ready for this final. She said she was so proud in the

:59:43. > :59:47.heats that she finished and qualified with the Scottish record

:59:47. > :59:57.time. HMRC is leading. She's taken over. McColgan is running well.

:59:57. > :59:57.

:59:57. > :59:59.She's got some good athletes around her, she is being competitive.

:59:59. > :00:09.was asking her doctor, what's the worst that could happen if I carry

:00:09. > :00:11.

:00:11. > :00:14.on competing? The doctor said, there's a real prospect of you

:00:14. > :00:17.breaking your leg. She said, that's fine, if that happens I will be out

:00:17. > :00:21.for the rest of the season but I will have competed in the World

:00:21. > :00:26.Championships. She did break -- legs in 2007. She was determined this

:00:26. > :00:28.time not to let an injury get in the way of her competing. The first time

:00:28. > :00:38.around... Here she is competing in it, and I think competing extremely

:00:38. > :00:52.

:00:52. > :01:02.pattern in the steeplechase. Uganda, Spain and Russia have provided the

:01:02. > :01:07.

:01:07. > :01:11.champions will stop. We are going to have a new country getting the

:01:11. > :01:18.women's steeplechase title this year. It will be either a Kenya

:01:18. > :01:25.were Ethiopia. They have the dynasty in men's steeplechasing,

:01:25. > :01:32.and now they are determined to follow him that suit. After and

:01:32. > :01:42.10,000m men are women, here we are at this time on the track and

:01:42. > :01:42.

:01:42. > :01:47.Milcah Cheywa that is determined to run as hard and as fast as she can.

:01:47. > :01:57.Her training partner is Lydia Chepkurui. I wonder if she will be

:01:57. > :02:08.

:02:08. > :02:13.able to run on the same terms as her? It has slowed down. Now we

:02:13. > :02:21.really have a race. Milcah Cheywa is determined to win this one. She

:02:21. > :02:28.has been third before it twice. She desperately wants to be the first

:02:28. > :02:32.Kenyan women to win the women's steeplechase will stop she won in

:02:32. > :02:36.Rome and in a Birmingham Diamond League meeting, and in manner cope

:02:36. > :02:40.will stop the last time she last was in the Kenyan police

:02:40. > :02:50.championships, at which tells you a lot about the fitness of the police

:02:50. > :02:53.

:02:53. > :03:02.force will stop Eilish McColgan is running strongly. We had somebody

:03:02. > :03:09.falling in the first group. It was a Fiat as if a. She took a tumble,

:03:09. > :03:15.but she is back running. Eilish McColgan is on the way to her

:03:15. > :03:25.personal best if she can hold this together. But Milcah Cheywa is so

:03:25. > :03:26.

:03:26. > :03:36.determined and she is so fearful of the Ethiopians. A yard or so begins

:03:36. > :03:36.

:03:36. > :03:42.to open. Her training partner is coming along beside her. It is

:03:43. > :03:49.getting faster. Milcah Cheywa, the bronze medallist from the last time

:03:49. > :03:57.around, he has the bell. It could be a fast time, but who is going to

:03:57. > :04:05.win it? Who is going to prevail? Three break away, two Kenyans and

:04:05. > :04:15.one Ethiopian. Milcah Cheywa and Lydia Chepkurui are setting the

:04:15. > :04:16.

:04:16. > :04:22.pace at the moment. Two Kenyans are battling for the gold. The two

:04:22. > :04:27.fastest women in the world. Let's watched their tactics and let's

:04:27. > :04:36.watch how they hold it. This is interesting because there is a

:04:36. > :04:43.battle coming up from behind. Now they chase is on. This is why

:04:43. > :04:51.Milcah Cheywa was nervous. She is nervous about the finish. She looks

:04:51. > :04:58.to be tiring. -- he had a kick off the back of it. Milcah Cheywa takes

:04:58. > :05:07.the gold medal, Kenya's first in this event. Had team-mate Lydia

:05:07. > :05:15.Chepkurui takes the silver. Sofia Assefa takes the brands will stop

:05:15. > :05:19.she worked for it and she ran for it as she got a little bit of luck.

:05:19. > :05:26.There is Eilish McColgan. She is going to be close to her best time,

:05:26. > :05:30.but not quite. A really brave performance. A great day for her.

:05:30. > :05:37.I'd bet she is delighted she overruled the doctors and said, I

:05:37. > :05:43.am going to the championships, I do not care what you say Fulstow up 22

:05:43. > :05:48.years and nine months of age. I am delighted for her in every sense.

:05:48. > :05:54.Her mother Liz McColgan will be very delighted with her daughter.

:05:54. > :05:57.She has done a fantastic job as a coach. She will have your ears when

:05:57. > :06:03.the training does better in terms of injury and health and she will

:06:03. > :06:13.come back stronger. We talked about it in the men's steeplechase, were

:06:13. > :06:14.

:06:15. > :06:19.the Kenyans dominate, but they have not done so in the women's. Into

:06:20. > :06:28.the finishing straight. Milcah Cheywa was nervous about the finish

:06:28. > :06:36.of Sofia Assefa da. She fell, and that gap would not have been as

:06:36. > :06:41.much. But her team-mate Lydia Chepkurui finished in second. The

:06:41. > :06:46.first Kenyan to win that the women's steeplechase will stir up

:06:46. > :06:56.Eilish McColgan on her way to a 10th place fish will stop now

:06:56. > :07:11.

:07:11. > :07:21.entering through seven for her for States has cut this to stay in the

:07:21. > :07:26.

:07:26. > :07:31.spinal and fight it out with Yelena Isinbayeva. That was her worst

:07:31. > :07:36.attempt of although start-up the Olympic champion has definitely got

:07:36. > :07:42.a medal, but will it be a silver medal, or will it be a bronze

:07:42. > :07:52.medal? There is only one athlete clear so far and that is Elena is

:07:52. > :08:14.

:08:15. > :08:23.Drama is something you know all about, but there you are top 10 in

:08:23. > :08:28.the world, after all those injuries. After I ran I felt there was a bit

:08:28. > :08:33.more of there. I cannot complain, a top 10 in the world is far Dianna

:08:33. > :08:38.where I was ranked. If I had not run on Saturday, that would have

:08:38. > :08:43.been a PB their. With the preparations I have had I did not

:08:43. > :08:50.know what I was expecting. It is different when you get into the

:08:50. > :08:53.race. I would have liked to have come into the top eight. Up I am

:08:53. > :09:02.disappointed with my time of will start in the middle section and I

:09:02. > :09:12.am slow. We are going to go back live to the poor world. -- Paul

:09:12. > :09:25.

:09:25. > :09:32.The crowd have gone absolutely potty. This is their first track

:09:32. > :09:41.and field gold medal. Where on earth had she gone? She is

:09:41. > :09:49.currently the darling of Russia. She has had a troubled last 12

:09:49. > :09:53.months. She returned to her old coat and he has put things right.

:09:53. > :10:03.She is back on top of the owner of the stock it is her third world

:10:03. > :10:04.

:10:04. > :10:13.title. But can this Braga a little bit higher? I think it could. Keep

:10:13. > :10:20.your composure. What is she going to go to? Her world record is buy

:10:20. > :10:28.Polly 06. The championship record is 5.01. Jennifer Suhr gives her

:10:28. > :10:38.congratulations, but she has played second fiddle to her today. That is

:10:38. > :10:40.

:10:40. > :10:50.one of her Russian team-mates. Jennifer is sewer was second and

:10:50. > :10:51.

:10:51. > :10:57.Yarisley silver of Cuba was third. -- Jennifer Suhr. You can

:10:57. > :11:03.understand the excitement. The answer is electric tonight. It is

:11:03. > :11:08.unbelievable. In my heat it was very quiet and all the seats were

:11:08. > :11:16.empty. One of the coaches said, be prepared, it is very loud in their.

:11:16. > :11:23.It is not as loud as London, but it is pretty close. And she is jumping

:11:23. > :11:28.tonight Coleridge explained then there is. Brendan Foster said your

:11:28. > :11:34.mother has done a great club as a code to get live here. It took a

:11:34. > :11:39.look of confidence in my mum and I listen to exactly what she says and

:11:39. > :11:42.I do everything she says. She has had serious injuries herself the

:11:43. > :11:47.stock but the fact she has been there and done it makes it easier

:11:47. > :11:55.for me to take that bomber at and I am grateful for the help she has

:11:55. > :12:05.given little stock spoor UK has been great and it has got me here

:12:05. > :12:37.

:12:37. > :12:44.fitter and stronger and better for career, and she is the world

:12:44. > :12:50.champion. I understand she has asked for the buyer to be raised to

:12:50. > :13:00.5.07. That is a one centimetre increase over the mark she set in

:13:00. > :13:04.

:13:04. > :13:09.Zurich. You do not what your hair A gold medal to the guy who tried

:13:10. > :13:16.to get her autograph when she was in the crowd. We have got one more

:13:16. > :13:24.gold medal left tonight, the men's 400m. How do you win the one-lap

:13:24. > :13:34.special? Who better to ask the Michael Johnson. OK, but 400m, one

:13:34. > :13:43.lap, when all our all-or-nothing. Focus, focus, focus, stay cool.

:13:43. > :13:50.Keep your head. Stride after stride after stride. Kirani James is going

:13:50. > :13:57.to take gold. Beluga, always believed. Remember last night?

:13:57. > :14:05.LaShawn Merritt knows what he has to do. Khoury and weights, a

:14:05. > :14:10.legendary status awaits. It is you have to take.

:14:10. > :14:15.We started the show tonight looking back Kirani James as perhaps one of

:14:15. > :14:20.the names in the next few years who will be one of those big stellar

:14:20. > :14:24.names in athletics. Winning tonight is a vital step on that journey,

:14:24. > :14:29.that cements his brilliance and a place in the sport as somebody who

:14:29. > :14:39.is going to be their championship after championship, but he has got

:14:39. > :14:57.

:14:57. > :14:59.the Dibabas, Usain Bolts and Shelly-Ann Frasers. Not many people

:14:59. > :15:04.are doing that in the sport right now. Take Jeremy Warriner from 2004,

:15:04. > :15:09.he dominated for three years and then LaShawn Merritt took over. Now

:15:09. > :15:16.we have Kirani James. I would give him the edge because he's won the

:15:16. > :15:26.championship for the last couple of years. LaShawn Merritt is a tough

:15:26. > :15:28.

:15:28. > :15:31.competitor. He is faster and a great athlete and a great champion. But I

:15:31. > :15:33.think what is really going to come into play is the confidence that

:15:33. > :15:42.Kirani James has coming into this championship, off an Olympic

:15:42. > :15:44.championship. But also the lane draw. Kirani James is inside of

:15:44. > :15:54.LaShawn Merritt. Knowing the last race they raced together

:15:54. > :15:54.

:15:54. > :16:34.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 63 seconds

:16:34. > :16:37.head-to-head, Kirani James 18. He is very strong, Merritt knows that. I

:16:37. > :16:40.think it will cause LaShawn Merritt to run a little bit tight. But he is

:16:40. > :16:42.an experienced athlete, so I'm sure his coach has talked to him about

:16:42. > :16:45.that and said, look, run your race, put yourself in position, 100m to

:16:45. > :16:48.go, ease your speed and all you can do at that point is hold form, which

:16:48. > :16:51.is very good at doing. Kirani James, how does he normally race, how

:16:51. > :16:53.should we expect him to go out? will keep his eye on LaShawn

:16:53. > :16:57.Merritt. He will run a safe race because he knows he's strong. He

:16:57. > :16:59.will not run out and try to blow it away. He's going to keep his eye on

:16:59. > :17:02.LaShawn Merritt. I think his race strategy will be, look, I'm behind

:17:02. > :17:05.my main competitor, there is no one in this race I really have to be

:17:05. > :17:08.concerned with, so I have to keep my eye on my main competitor. If he's

:17:08. > :17:11.not doing what he's supposed to be doing, then I run my race strategy.

:17:11. > :17:14.But if LaShawn Merritt is doing his thing, running a good 200, what he

:17:14. > :17:17.is going to do is keep his eye on him and at 200 to 300, expect him to

:17:17. > :17:20.start making a big move from that point. With 100 to go, with a nice

:17:21. > :17:23.lead, if he's got a great lead, no one is going to catch him. We are

:17:23. > :17:25.going back outside again. Isinbayeva is going for this world record

:17:26. > :17:35.attempt. I believe the bar has been put up to world record height. Can

:17:36. > :17:36.

:17:36. > :17:38.you imagine if she jumps that? An start making a big move from that

:17:38. > :17:40.point. Because she's the only athlete left in the competition, she

:17:40. > :17:50.does have slightly longer in which to take her vault. Still celebrating

:17:50. > :18:20.

:18:20. > :18:25.her victory. It's been a fascinating semifinal. A new national record.

:18:25. > :18:35.He's based in America and coached by Smith. Tony McQuade, part of the

:18:35. > :18:47.

:18:47. > :18:50.American four times for squad. Kirani James, who is in the lane

:18:50. > :18:54.outside him, at the age of 14 he ran 46.96. He was the grenade Sportsman

:18:54. > :18:57.of the year when he was 16. He ran 45.70 at just 15 years of age. Are

:18:57. > :19:05.you surprised that at the tender age of 20, he's already the world

:19:05. > :19:07.champion and the Olympic champion? Those two previous titles, 2008 and

:19:07. > :19:17.2009 went to LaShawn Merritt. He has beaten Kirani James earlier in the

:19:17. > :19:19.

:19:19. > :19:22.year, but when they raced in Paris recently, when the world's fastest

:19:22. > :19:25.time was run by James, they were 12 hundredths apart. Santos looked like

:19:25. > :19:34.he was getting back to the sort of form that gave him the Olympic

:19:34. > :19:36.silver medal. Still just 19. Jonathan Borlee, ahead of his

:19:36. > :19:46.brother, Kevin, making it through to the final. They almost exchange

:19:46. > :19:53.

:19:53. > :20:03.opportunities. He is the Belgian it was a classic. Maybe an upset

:20:03. > :20:07.

:20:07. > :20:11.result. Are we heading for something similar here? Kirani James knows the

:20:11. > :20:21.American scene so well, of course. He was at the University of Alabama.

:20:21. > :20:50.

:20:50. > :20:52.Merritt outside him, the American, write him off. Through the first

:20:52. > :20:54.200, Kirani James and LaShawn Merritt are passing everybody.

:20:54. > :20:57.Merritt with perhaps a half metre advantage. Kirani James working hard

:20:57. > :21:06.around that top bend. They have to work hard here to get back on terms.

:21:06. > :21:16.Kirani James is a long way back. Look at Merritt going. Kirani James

:21:16. > :21:19.

:21:19. > :21:29.is disappearing. Merritt will take it, McQuay will be second. Merritt

:21:29. > :21:32.

:21:32. > :21:35.destroyed James. In chasing him down, James blew his chances out of

:21:35. > :21:38.the water. I am not sure he will be able to hold his head up high and

:21:38. > :21:41.Sadie gave everything there. Once Merritt went away from him he seemed

:21:41. > :21:44.to give up, and that's not a good sign from the youngster. Look how

:21:44. > :21:47.strong he is in the home straight. He knew he had to get out hard, he

:21:47. > :21:52.knew they'd be chasing him. Santos maybe got it from Borlee. Michael,

:21:52. > :22:02.LaShawn Merritt, absolutely unbelievable performance, and what

:22:02. > :22:05.

:22:05. > :22:08.about James? That was a beautiful race, phenomenal by LaShawn Merritt.

:22:08. > :22:18.He took it out very hard in the first 200. I was a little bit afraid

:22:18. > :22:19.

:22:19. > :22:21.for him, taking it out that hard. But he took all of the sting out of

:22:21. > :22:24.Kirani James. Kirani James cannot match LaShawn Merritt's 200m speed.

:22:24. > :22:27.LaShawn Merritt came out here with a race plan, knew he had Kirani James,

:22:27. > :22:31.the Olympic and world champion, behind him. But he run a beautiful

:22:31. > :22:36.race, perfectly executed tonight by Merritt. Very well-deserved, he's

:22:36. > :22:38.worked very hard to get this back. I'm sure he is extremely happy,

:22:38. > :22:48.after the injury last year knocked him out of the finals of the Olympic

:22:48. > :22:51.

:22:51. > :23:01.Games. It is showtime. Yelena Isinbayeva is orchestrating the

:23:01. > :23:02.

:23:02. > :23:12.crowd. She wants the applause and the support even louder. She is

:23:12. > :23:15.attempting something nobody else in history has achieved. 5.07. If the

:23:15. > :23:21.reports on her training are to be believed, she has cleared five point

:23:21. > :23:31.11 this season in training. She has got the world title, now she wants

:23:31. > :23:42.

:23:42. > :23:52.more attempts, whether she takes them or not remains to be seen. What

:23:52. > :24:19.

:24:19. > :24:29.Kirani James only just. It was the former world champion, former

:24:29. > :24:39.

:24:39. > :24:41.Olympic champion, he is the world James with film now. Can you explain

:24:41. > :24:44.what didn't go right for you tonight? It just didn't work out.

:24:45. > :24:54.Some races you are less than perfect, it just didn't work out

:24:55. > :24:56.

:24:56. > :25:06.this time. How much of an effect did it have you in a race when LaShawn

:25:06. > :25:14.

:25:14. > :25:17.Merritt, billed as your big rival, starts putting his foot on the gas?

:25:17. > :25:20.It was just to execution at my end. I have to go back to the drawing

:25:20. > :25:22.board, get ready for next year and see what's going on. We know you are

:25:23. > :25:25.a great champion, so I'm sure you won't view this as anything other

:25:26. > :25:28.than a blip going forward. It's a shock to all of our systems and I

:25:28. > :25:38.suppose you most of all. Most definitely. Ike did not come into

:25:38. > :25:48.

:25:48. > :25:57.the World Championships expecting again. Kirani James was annihilated.

:25:57. > :26:02.LaShawn Merritt is the faster. It's the way that he won it and the way

:26:02. > :26:06.that Kirani James lost it. It was amazing. I think that what happened

:26:06. > :26:08.there is LaShawn Merritt took the race out so fast. I think what

:26:08. > :26:18.happened with Kirani James is he didn't really feel that LaShawn

:26:18. > :26:19.

:26:19. > :26:21.Merritt was going to be able to keep this pace. I didn't think he would

:26:21. > :26:24.keep that pace. He set off very quickly. This was faster than Kirani

:26:24. > :26:30.James wants to run at this point. But he's having to try to keep up.

:26:30. > :26:40.He's probably getting a bit tired than he would like to be. He is

:26:40. > :26:51.

:26:51. > :26:53.trying to keep up with the speed that LaShawn Merritt has. At this

:26:53. > :26:56.point, LaShawn Merritt is continuing, which means he's in

:26:56. > :26:59.great shape. What happens then with Kirani James is he's in it, but he's

:26:59. > :27:01.been running so hard, harder than he expected to, I don't know if he gave

:27:01. > :27:11.up at this point but he didn't have anything left. I don't believe he

:27:11. > :27:15.

:27:15. > :27:18.had anything left in the tank at this point. As you can see, you

:27:18. > :27:21.watch Kirani James, there's no point in this race that he gives up, you

:27:21. > :27:23.see him drop his shoulders or his hands come down, or that he's not

:27:23. > :27:26.trying as hard. LaShawn Merritt just came into this race with a perfect

:27:26. > :27:34.strategy, not only to run the best race he could today, but to take the

:27:34. > :27:36.sting out of Kirani James early. It worked to perfection. Great finish

:27:36. > :27:46.from McQuay as well. Great finish. I think Tony McQuay is a much better

:27:46. > :27:53.

:27:53. > :27:56.athlete than that. Good on him to get a medal, but he could run much

:27:56. > :27:59.faster than that. He had so much left at the end. He is still running

:27:59. > :28:01.faster than both athletes were running in the first half of the

:28:01. > :28:04.race in the second half of the race. But Santos, the 18-year-old, he

:28:04. > :28:06.comes in here, a second championship in a row, he gets a medal again. I'm

:28:07. > :28:15.very impressed with him. And another Borlee brother almost replacing his

:28:15. > :28:18.older brother. It was just forth for him. A good one for the Europeans.

:28:18. > :28:20.Guess, I'd say. I was staggered by that race. It did not pan out the

:28:20. > :28:23.way we expected at all. Very disappointed that Borlee didn't

:28:23. > :28:27.quite get the medal. That is the final gold of the evening. What an

:28:27. > :28:33.evening it's been so far. Robert Harting, the Olympic champion and

:28:33. > :28:37.the world champion. He really is a supreme discus thrower. The women's

:28:37. > :28:44.heptathlon, it was Melnychenko of the Ukraine who ended up winning it

:28:44. > :28:54.with a fabulous 800 metre run. And the 800 metre men's race was run by

:28:54. > :28:55.

:28:55. > :28:58.Aman of Ethiopia. The steeplechase, a Lish McColgan gave it a good go

:28:58. > :29:03.but it was Chen Moss of Kenya who took the gold. And possibly the most

:29:03. > :29:13.popular of medals this evening, the Russian Isinbayeva with the pole

:29:13. > :29:15.

:29:15. > :29:18.vault. But certainly the most shocking, LaShawn Merritt, not that

:29:18. > :29:21.he ran -- won it, but that Kirani James ran the way he did. Let's have

:29:21. > :29:22.a look back at some other events from the night, starting with that

:29:22. > :29:27.heptathlon. Katarina Johnson-Thompson. We haven't had

:29:27. > :29:37.time to fully look back at her couple of days here and to progress

:29:37. > :29:39.from London and what you thought generally of her PBs since the

:29:39. > :29:48.disappointing shot put yesterday? think she's been brilliant. You

:29:48. > :29:50.can't expect an athlete to just come into these championships and

:29:51. > :29:53.normally do huge PBs all the time, it just doesn't happen for a

:29:53. > :30:03.heptathlete. But what you did expect from her is that she be competitive.

:30:03. > :30:07.

:30:07. > :30:10.She's been excellent. That disappointing shot put, she picked

:30:10. > :30:13.herself back up and run a super 200m. They two, out with another PB

:30:13. > :30:16.for the long jump and then the javelin. You saw her face light up

:30:16. > :30:24.when she threw it over 40 metres for the first time. It's been fantastic.

:30:24. > :30:27.Then to close with the 800m, again, when it really mattered she was able

:30:27. > :30:29.to deliver. That bodes well for the future. Another PB in the 800. She

:30:29. > :30:39.has grown from this experience. Where else do you think she needs to

:30:39. > :30:48.

:30:48. > :30:53.work over the winter? Per shot put Shewell broke from this. The 800m

:30:53. > :31:02.was fantastic to see that she was able to dig deep and clawback and

:31:02. > :31:08.fight for that medal. It was faith, but a personal best overall.

:31:08. > :31:15.Jessica Ennis-Hill tweeted, your medal welcome. She will reap the

:31:15. > :31:25.rewards. This lady is reaping Hurst tonight. She is going for a world

:31:25. > :31:36.

:31:36. > :31:41.record attempt. It is her second after the World Championships. But

:31:41. > :31:46.after the qualifying championships she said, I am going to start a

:31:47. > :31:54.family and return and reclaim all my medals. She has already become

:31:54. > :32:04.the world champion for a third time. Now she is trying to set her 29th

:32:04. > :32:11.

:32:11. > :32:21.world record. Listen to the crowd. This is real theatre. What a giant

:32:21. > :32:27.

:32:27. > :32:32.stage she has got all to herself that now. She was not a million

:32:32. > :32:37.miles away. But she really knows how to milk a crowd, that's for

:32:37. > :32:43.sure. The drama does not finished yet because she has still got one

:32:43. > :32:50.more attempt if she wants it. The roll of honour is exactly the same

:32:50. > :32:54.as it was in London, but the order is slightly different. On that

:32:54. > :32:58.occasion she was expected by the London crowd and everybody else to

:32:58. > :33:08.take the Olympic title once more, but she did not. It went to

:33:08. > :33:11.

:33:11. > :33:21.Jennifer Suhr of the United States. Yarisley silver or was in second

:33:21. > :33:33.

:33:33. > :33:37.On the busiest and most electric evening, with all the races over

:33:37. > :33:42.and the medals decided, it seems fitting she has got the floor to

:33:42. > :33:48.herself. She likes it, she milks the atmosphere and he loves the

:33:48. > :33:52.crowd. She is your original performer and she can ride on Usain

:33:52. > :33:59.Bolt in playing to the gallery and getting the crowd involved. This

:33:59. > :34:05.crowd wants nothing more than two see her clear up the world record.

:34:05. > :34:11.She has had some great quotes. She said she was going to finish 100%

:34:11. > :34:15.in July. Then a few weeks later, I am going to have some children

:34:16. > :34:25.first and come back and get my gold medals. She has got it all sorted

:34:26. > :34:36.

:34:36. > :34:41.out. Let's see if she has got this the steps saying, I wonder if she

:34:41. > :34:46.is going to have the bar put up another centimetre. She has done

:34:46. > :34:56.that in the past. She has had a couple of failures and then thought,

:34:56. > :35:00.

:35:01. > :35:09.why not? All the marker boards in the arena say 5.07. We used to rave

:35:09. > :35:18.about Sergey Bubka have. He set so many world records and he won six

:35:18. > :35:28.world titles. That has never been done before. It possibly will never

:35:28. > :35:28.

:35:28. > :35:35.be done again. The stage is set once more if she wants to. It looks

:35:35. > :35:45.as though she will attempt 5.07 for the third time.

:35:45. > :35:46.

:35:46. > :35:52.She is putting her tracksuit back She is using the maximum amount of

:35:52. > :35:57.time. She is visualising what she can do. She had clear instructions

:35:57. > :36:04.from her coach. You do not rush a world record attempt, you take your

:36:04. > :36:10.time. This crowd are so up for it. We have not heard a night like it

:36:10. > :36:14.and for Hershey is going to enjoy this moment. She is in her home.

:36:14. > :36:18.The Russians have had a very good day and they are getting into the

:36:18. > :36:25.championships tonight. Hopefully this will feed on for the rest of

:36:25. > :36:29.the week. I was not sure what kind of championships it was going to

:36:29. > :36:33.people stop it has delivered on unpredictability and excitement.

:36:33. > :36:38.Tonight when it really matter as the crowd has come out in their

:36:38. > :36:47.droves to support their darling. Let's have a look back at the 800m

:36:47. > :36:57.tonight. The field had no Olympic champion, David Rudisha. It was a

:36:57. > :36:57.

:36:57. > :37:07.wide open race. It was wide open. Duane Solomon did them a big favour

:37:07. > :37:12.by leaving it out fast. Andrew Osagie ran a clever race and he ran

:37:12. > :37:16.the best race he could with the cards he was dealt in training. He

:37:16. > :37:26.his way back off, but he has got more left in his legs and we know

:37:26. > :37:28.

:37:28. > :37:34.he is going to come back. If he had been with my SN11 doubt ski -- my

:37:34. > :37:44.scene 11th of ski, he would have been able to come back. But

:37:44. > :37:45.

:37:45. > :37:52.Mohammed Aman has got more left on his legs. Well done to Andrew to

:37:52. > :37:59.dip on the line. That extra place, it goes in the record books. Yes,

:37:59. > :38:05.it was a good effort by him. To come in here and compete at a quick

:38:05. > :38:08.pace for 800m. It was a pretty good performance by him. I would have

:38:08. > :38:13.liked him to have stayed with the pack a bit more, and he will learn

:38:13. > :38:20.a lesson from this. And you are pleased with the performance of the

:38:21. > :38:29.Americans? Yes, it was a solid effort. I think Duane Solomon has a

:38:29. > :38:39.very bright future as well. Sadly it was not his race today. Let's go

:38:39. > :38:45.

:38:45. > :38:48.finished. But are we about to see a little bit of history? I do not

:38:48. > :38:55.think the World Championships in the past has experienced anything

:38:55. > :39:01.like the atmosphere we have got here. Heaven knows what the

:39:01. > :39:11.newspaper coverage will be tomorrow at. She is a front page news all

:39:11. > :39:25.

:39:25. > :39:33.the way. The can this be yet half the story. It is another world

:39:33. > :39:40.championship gold medal for Yelena Isinbayeva. She has won everything

:39:40. > :39:44.the sport has to offer her at least once. Three world titles, two

:39:44. > :39:52.Olympic titles, athlete of the Year, as declared by the governing body

:39:52. > :39:59.of the sport. And numerous world records. Please do not retire, this

:39:59. > :40:09.sport needs year. Thank you very much indeed, she says. It is asked

:40:09. > :40:09.

:40:09. > :40:15.who should be thanking her! She reigns supreme in an athletics

:40:15. > :40:21.stadium once again. That's for me is one of the performances. That

:40:21. > :40:27.was not bad either. That was one of the best performances we have seen

:40:27. > :40:33.in these championships so far. Let's not forget Jennifer Suhr of

:40:33. > :40:38.the United States and the Cuban. They put up a tremendous fight. At

:40:38. > :40:44.one point it looked as if the American was going to win the title,

:40:44. > :40:54.but then this woman came back with a supreme effort. The only athlete

:40:54. > :40:59.

:40:59. > :41:09.to clear 4.89. There is the bronze medallist, having won silver in

:41:09. > :41:24.

:41:24. > :41:34.great story. It will not exactly go down in folklore, but you can say

:41:34. > :41:48.

:41:48. > :41:54.you were here. Wonderful stuff. Oh, my goodness. So many of the pole

:41:54. > :42:02.vaulters were former gymnasts. She is no exception. What an athlete

:42:02. > :42:07.she is. Almost a great actress as well. The darling of Russia,

:42:07. > :42:13.certainly the darling of Moscow and of the stadium. What a brilliant

:42:13. > :42:19.end to what has been a fantastic day in track and field and

:42:19. > :42:24.athletics. Not all due to this woman, but largely serve. I wonder

:42:24. > :42:34.if Sergey Bubka is going to come out and congratulate her. Surely he

:42:34. > :42:43.

:42:43. > :42:48.must. There is the mascot. She really is delighted. Having been in

:42:48. > :42:55.the doldrums since London last year she has come back in the best

:42:55. > :43:03.possible way. A lovely moment. For the record books there is the

:43:03. > :43:13.result. Aziz and's best. It seems superfluous having attempted a new

:43:13. > :43:34.

:43:34. > :43:39.We are coming up to quarter past 10 local time and it says it all that

:43:39. > :43:45.most of the crowd are here. They want to eat out every last minute

:43:45. > :43:50.of that performance. She is on the posters and on the accreditation,

:43:50. > :43:55.she is the poster girl of these championships. She is living up to

:43:55. > :44:01.the pressure that the poster girl of London, Jessica Ennis-Hill, had

:44:01. > :44:07.to live up to and she has delivered under that pressure. And who would

:44:07. > :44:15.doubt her? It is so wonderful to have her back. She lights up the

:44:15. > :44:21.stadiums. You think about Usain Bolt and her magnificent she was,

:44:21. > :44:27.she has been everywhere. Do you think she should put off the babies

:44:27. > :44:32.for a while? We do not want to lose her. The other day you may have

:44:32. > :44:42.seen that we reunited two room mates from the 1980 Olympic Games.

:44:42. > :44:55.

:44:55. > :45:04.They had so much to dock about that and grandchildren that when our time

:45:05. > :45:09.came, we did it right. What about Los Angeles, was that Joyeuse

:45:09. > :45:19.compare to Moscow? I enjoyed Los Angeles. When you win an Olympic

:45:19. > :45:22.title you've almost paid your dues. Between 80 to 804I'm a completely

:45:22. > :45:26.different person. When I went to 804I knew this would be a big,

:45:26. > :45:31.momentous occasion. I just knew. Coming down the steps in to Moscow

:45:31. > :45:41.with you... The famous British Airways flight with our rather dodgy

:45:41. > :45:42.

:45:42. > :45:50.blue suits, it could never be of that group order. The 800m was a

:45:50. > :46:00.fantastic performance, it's often overlooked. Sebastien code

:46:00. > :46:02.

:46:02. > :46:04.challenges and comes into the silver medal position. The 1500m, we had

:46:04. > :46:06.Steve Ovett, Steve Cram, the world champion, and yourself, three

:46:06. > :46:16.British athletes. Glorious times. extraordinary period for British

:46:16. > :46:22.

:46:22. > :46:25.athletics. It's like high speed chess, you have to continually be

:46:25. > :46:30.aware. Where is the exit, where is the gap? If they come up on the

:46:30. > :46:32.inside or outside and I'm stuck there, how do I get out of that?

:46:32. > :46:35.Steve Cram in the middle of the bunch, he said he won't leave it

:46:35. > :46:42.until the last 200, he will go before then. Sebastien Cole will

:46:42. > :46:52.probably go before then. No athlete ever reaches perfection, but I don't

:46:52. > :46:54.

:46:54. > :47:02.think I ever raced better. The only thing going through my mind is,

:47:02. > :47:10.don't let that guy in front of me. Because Steve made a big effort

:47:10. > :47:13.then. I've been at the wrong end of Steve, when he's gone to the front.

:47:13. > :47:17.Steve was one of those athletes that really used to enjoy the long run

:47:17. > :47:25.for home. He just became empowered. He destroys in the finishing

:47:25. > :47:35.straight. Sebastien Coe back at his best as the Olympic champion again.

:47:35. > :47:41.A different reaction. I'd had a bit of a serving from the press room a

:47:41. > :47:51.few months beforehand. Two Olympic gold medals world records in your

:47:51. > :47:54.

:47:54. > :47:57.collection. For my money, there's only one form of athletics you

:47:57. > :48:03.haven't done. You started off trying to win the 800m at a major title in

:48:03. > :48:06.78, you tried again in 80, again in 82, again in 84. I was consistent.

:48:06. > :48:16.I've been the fastest 800m runner for the best part of six or seven

:48:16. > :48:24.

:48:24. > :48:26.seasons and I haven't got, I'd won a couple of the Robocops, but they

:48:26. > :48:29.don't count. I needed a gold medal in a recognised championship. I knew

:48:29. > :48:32.this was probably my last chance. was the European Championships. This

:48:32. > :48:35.race always makes me laugh because I didn't even dare to tell my old man

:48:35. > :48:39.I was going to run this. I knew how I was going to run this, I was going

:48:39. > :48:47.to run it from the back. My mum said my dad was almost having a heart

:48:47. > :48:49.attack when suddenly I just drifted off the back. He thought, my God,

:48:49. > :48:52.I'm watching Moscow again! Cram in his familiar position at the back,

:48:52. > :49:02.keeping out of trouble. Steve Cram was in the form of his life. I

:49:02. > :49:12.

:49:12. > :49:15.thought, I'm going to follow him today. So you are off the back.

:49:15. > :49:18.There is a moment when he's looking around to try and figure out where I

:49:18. > :49:20.am. I'm so close behind him, because he's so tall he couldn't see I was

:49:20. > :49:23.on his shoulder. A dramatic move from the outside from Sebastien Coe.

:49:23. > :49:28.Can this be his first title? Sebastien Coe wins at last. Coe has

:49:28. > :49:30.done what he's always wanted to do. So that was it, gold medal in a

:49:30. > :49:34.major championships. 800, world records, Olympic titles and your

:49:34. > :49:38.career is kind of winding down in 1990, when you finally retired from

:49:38. > :49:44.athletics. You must have looked back with huge satisfaction. You'd

:49:44. > :49:50.travelled a really exciting journey. It was a fantastic decade to be

:49:51. > :50:00.involved. I came into the tame in 77 in the indoor Championships. You

:50:01. > :50:01.

:50:01. > :50:03.were the only track medallist in Montreal. We'd probably had our

:50:04. > :50:11.worst ever showing at an Olympic Games in track and field. Then

:50:11. > :50:14.suddenly to be a part of a team that you travelled abroad and there was

:50:14. > :50:24.Tessa Sanderson and Daley Thompson, the young Roger Black. It was an

:50:24. > :50:25.

:50:25. > :50:27.extraordinary team to be involved in. It was the envy of the world.

:50:27. > :50:32.You then moved in to politics, a regular as an MP. Did you think,

:50:32. > :50:37.that is my sporting life behind me? I've always just enjoy the

:50:37. > :50:40.atmosphere. I would be watching track and field if I didn't have an

:50:40. > :50:44.accreditation, I would be watching it, that's what I do. I always knew

:50:44. > :50:54.instinctively that one day sport would probably take me back in one

:50:54. > :50:59.

:50:59. > :51:09.time looking at Coe, thinking that you were going to get that world

:51:09. > :51:09.

:51:09. > :51:17.record. I did. It was there for 16 years, it was my time to do it.

:51:17. > :51:20.great to have you here, especially on the night of the 800m final. What

:51:20. > :51:30.did you make of it? There were a few mistakes they made, the first 200

:51:30. > :51:45.

:51:45. > :51:48.were too fast. Aman did that very well. In the earlier rounds he

:51:48. > :51:51.didn't quite look like he might be on his best form. Was that a bit of

:51:51. > :51:54.mind games? Maybe it was mind games, but maybe he was not ready yet. When

:51:54. > :52:02.it came to the final, maybe it was a little bit more difficult. Maybe he

:52:02. > :52:04.was not sure about that, but then in the final he is going to do it.

:52:04. > :52:07.the first gold medal Ethiopia had one below 5000m at the World

:52:07. > :52:17.Championships, a big moment. Even in the 10,000 you see it now. They are

:52:17. > :52:19.

:52:19. > :52:21.going out to the sprints, maybe! Moving around and spreading the

:52:21. > :52:24.talent. Wilson, what do you think for the 5000m, do you think the

:52:24. > :52:29.Kenyans and Ethiopians will work together as a team, or do you think

:52:29. > :52:34.they will not be able to coordinate it like they did in the 10,000?

:52:34. > :52:44.are still maturing. They have to learn how to train, how to run and

:52:44. > :52:58.

:52:58. > :53:01.how to work together. They are still working divided. Kenya, all of them

:53:01. > :53:04.in London last year are not here. It's the new people now. Let me talk

:53:04. > :53:06.to you about that. Last year in London we saw that magnificent run

:53:06. > :53:08.by David Rudisha. This whole championship is the pourer for not

:53:09. > :53:18.having him here. It was such a magnificent race in London. What was

:53:19. > :53:22.

:53:22. > :53:31.it like for you? They were mostly middle distance but now it's going

:53:31. > :53:37.down. Let's talk a bit about Mo Farah. All are specifically ask you

:53:37. > :53:40.about the race under way that the Ethiopians and the Kenyans have

:53:40. > :53:45.approached the race. What have you made up Mo Farah over the last 12

:53:45. > :53:53.months? When he ran 3.28, I know he's in really good shape. But then

:53:54. > :53:58.they worked together, I thought that he would be having trouble. But he's

:53:58. > :54:08.in very good shape. He is continuing from last year. What do you think,

:54:08. > :54:16.

:54:16. > :54:18.do you think they will make it a more tactical race than it ended up

:54:18. > :54:21.being? Nobody really got it together to give them a challenge. No, they

:54:21. > :54:31.didn't coordinate in the ten K. Although it wasn't that slow, so it

:54:31. > :54:35.

:54:35. > :54:37.will still have taken energy from Mo. Having said that, in the heats,

:54:37. > :54:40.I think he looked better than he did in the heat in the Olympics last

:54:40. > :54:42.year. He's grown as an athlete, he is stronger insurance wise. Even

:54:43. > :54:45.though he hasn't been tested on that this year. If they are trying to

:54:45. > :54:49.beat him, I think that's the only way they will do it. They will have

:54:49. > :54:54.to make hard from the start and see if he is lacking endurance wise. I

:54:54. > :55:04.don't think he is. I think that would be the only way to test him,

:55:04. > :55:07.

:55:07. > :55:10.because waiting... I think that Mo has that edge over them at the

:55:10. > :55:13.moment. I think they are scared of him. He goes to the front time and

:55:13. > :55:16.time again, they let him go. Then he controls it from there. The minute

:55:16. > :55:19.anyone tries to come past him, he's forcing them to run wide. He

:55:19. > :55:29.sometimes playing with them, just going there to slow them down. And

:55:29. > :55:33.yet they let him do it. That final is on Friday. Have a cup of tea,

:55:33. > :55:39.chill out, Mo's in the race. You've got to go into the race knowing,

:55:39. > :55:49.yes, I'm going to win. I will fight to the line. The final thing is

:55:49. > :56:04.

:56:04. > :56:10.Mo? He is the interloper, he's come in and broken it up a bit between

:56:10. > :56:18.Ethiopia and Kenya. For him, he was investigating them, going out their

:56:18. > :56:21.training. He has been working on that. Mo Farah really understood

:56:21. > :56:31.about the running. He is getting mature. Starting from the

:56:31. > :56:46.

:56:46. > :56:49.Europeans, he's getting confident. It is ominous what Wilson said

:56:49. > :56:51.earlier about the Ethiopians moving down to sprints. After 800 it is 400

:56:51. > :56:54.next! I don't think the sprinters are too worried! Tactics don't work,

:56:54. > :56:59.teamwork doesn't work down there in the sprints. Yes, it's all or

:56:59. > :57:09.nothing. I was going to ask, what do you think Mo could run over 800m?

:57:09. > :57:13.

:57:13. > :57:23.For me, he can run 1.44. His coach likes for the guys to run like

:57:23. > :57:35.

:57:35. > :57:37.sprinters. He has absolutely come on in the last couple of years. No

:57:37. > :57:40.afternoon or evening session tomorrow, which means you only live

:57:40. > :57:49.athletics will be at 6:30am on BBC Two. You can watch the Cold War
