:01:06. > :01:16.well domination. Unbeatable. And passable! Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce

:01:16. > :01:17.

:01:17. > :01:27.crosses the line. Esteem is coming. She has made it! It is all about

:01:27. > :01:30.

:01:30. > :01:38.LaShawn Merritt. He is going to take evening's track programme, all eyes

:01:38. > :01:42.turned to one woman. When the athletics was last held in the

:01:42. > :01:52.Luzhniki Stadium pole vault was not even an event. Now it was the main

:01:52. > :01:52.

:01:52. > :02:02.one. The magnificent Yelena Isinbayeva. When I won last time in

:02:02. > :02:15.

:02:15. > :02:24.feeling inside me that yesterday I had a chance.

:02:24. > :02:30.Listen to the crowd as she goes clear. Oh yes! Wonderful staff.

:02:30. > :02:36.Isinbayeva really on top of her game now. But can the American respond?

:02:36. > :02:43.The Olympic champion Jennifer Suhr of the United States has got this

:02:43. > :02:49.vault to stay in this final. The American's last attempt now. Oh, no.

:02:50. > :02:56.That was her worst event of all. Yarisley Silva of Cuba has still got

:02:56. > :03:05.one final event but there is only one athlete clear so far.

:03:05. > :03:08.It is not to be. Isinbayeva is the champion! And the crowd have gone

:03:08. > :03:17.absolutely potty. She has won everything the sport has got to

:03:18. > :03:24.offer her at least once. Three world titles. Two Olympic titles. And

:03:24. > :03:28.numerous world records. She is back on top of the world. I think I won

:03:29. > :03:33.today because of my home crowd, because of my family and because of

:03:34. > :03:37.my genius coach. I have had many difficulties in the past but I am

:03:37. > :03:47.proud of myself because I have overcome this and now I am flying

:03:47. > :03:50.

:03:50. > :03:55.organisers and four Yelena Isinbayeva. The perfect way to

:03:55. > :03:59.finish. And usually today, there is just a morning session. If you are

:03:59. > :04:04.looking for an athletics fix this Wednesday, the next 2.5 hours is it.

:04:04. > :04:13.It is the men's long jump this morning. We were not sure of Greg

:04:13. > :04:21.Rutherford would be here because of injury but he is. The star name the

:04:21. > :04:26.women's 5000m is Meseret Defar. Also in the field we have Sophie

:04:26. > :04:32.Hitchon, the British record-holder. She has been in outstanding form

:04:32. > :04:42.this year. Her focus will be to make the final, as it will be for Chris

:04:42. > :05:05.

:05:05. > :05:10.O'Hare. This is the timetable for morning and good morning to Paula

:05:10. > :05:16.and Denise. The morning after the evening when the stadium came

:05:16. > :05:21.alive. Absolutely. We were just saying that here in Russia they do

:05:21. > :05:24.not care about Usain Bolt. It is Isinbayeva that they care about. She

:05:24. > :05:27.was performing to everyone last night. She was saying if the

:05:28. > :05:32.Olympics had been here she would have got it right because of the

:05:32. > :05:38.support. I think that lifted her over the bar because she was way

:05:38. > :05:43.over it. It was the perfect scenario for the organisers. This is what

:05:43. > :05:49.they wanted to happen. Yes, it they had a full stadium. It was like

:05:49. > :05:53.watching a film star last night. She was playing to the crowd and blowing

:05:53. > :05:59.kisses and getting them onside to do what she set out to do which is to

:05:59. > :06:06.win this competition. Her vault was incredible. You see how far she was

:06:06. > :06:11.over the bar. The place erupted. It was a joy to be here. This is what

:06:11. > :06:16.the worlds are about. It is about getting people involved. They are

:06:16. > :06:23.getting the athletes across the line first. We see the spoils there are

:06:23. > :06:27.she clears 4.89 the first time but that was a heck of a competition --

:06:27. > :06:31.we see the smiles there. We have Yarisley Silva who was the silver

:06:31. > :06:36.medallist and Jennifer Suhr who was probably the favourite coming into

:06:36. > :06:40.this competition. She has been in scintillating form and is a fierce

:06:40. > :06:44.competitor but this lady here, Isinbayeva, who has been the darling

:06:44. > :06:51.of world athletics for so many years, it was a nice return for her

:06:51. > :06:55.to be on home soil, to really lift the crowd. The cameramen were all

:06:55. > :07:00.over her. It was her night last night. It was a pleasure to watch

:07:00. > :07:04.her. Paula, we think back to the British crowds in London 2012 when

:07:04. > :07:11.we were very British and we cheered when people did well and we did not

:07:11. > :07:16.cheer when people did not do well. It was not the same last night.

:07:16. > :07:19.poor Jennifer Suhr. She failed and the crowd erupted as if Isinbayeva

:07:20. > :07:29.had gone clear. She was definitely competing against the partisan

:07:30. > :07:30.

:07:30. > :07:34.crowd. That made her job harder. But Yelena lifted it when it really

:07:34. > :07:39.mattered. She has gone back to her old childhood coach. I think they

:07:39. > :07:43.got it right. We will see if she changes her mind about whether she

:07:43. > :07:47.retires. At the beginning of the year she said this is the end. And

:07:47. > :07:54.she said I will go and have a baby and come back again. What is your

:07:54. > :07:57.gut instinct? Had it been the Olympics and this was the final

:07:57. > :08:03.Olympics you could say, draw a line under it. But the way she was

:08:03. > :08:08.jumping. She did attempt a new world record of five metres and seven

:08:08. > :08:12.centimetres and she was not that far off it so she is clearly in great

:08:12. > :08:16.shape. She might feel that mentally it is difficult keep stimulating

:08:16. > :08:22.yourself after being so successful for so many years, but I think there

:08:22. > :08:29.is a lot more to give from her and she likes the stadium. I think the

:08:29. > :08:36.sport needs her. We have Usain Bolt on the men's side. It is the

:08:36. > :08:46.women's 5000m now. There is an interesting story about the American

:08:46. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :08:52.athlete going in heat one. We could have had a step -- Sebastien Coe 's

:08:52. > :08:59.Steve Yvette type clash like we had in Moscow. But Shannon Rowbury

:08:59. > :09:04.messed up and then run a qualifying time but did not submit it to USA

:09:04. > :09:07.track and field. So because of that when the 1500m trial winner pulled

:09:07. > :09:13.out last Thursday, even though Shannon was already here and wanted

:09:13. > :09:21.to run the 1500 eaters, she could not do that. So she is here in the

:09:21. > :09:26.5000m. She has qualified but unfortunately for Shannon, her best

:09:26. > :09:32.event is the 3000m which does not exist any more. Hopefully she will

:09:32. > :09:39.go out and perform here. It is a shame that as a bronze medallist in

:09:39. > :09:48.2009, she is not here in the 1500m. And going back to Meseret Defar it

:09:48. > :09:52.is a shame that Tirunesh Dibaba is not here.

:09:52. > :09:57.I think the Ethiopians wanted to let the younger athletes have a go on

:09:57. > :10:04.the team. For Meseret Defar, it has not worked for her doubling up in

:10:04. > :10:14.the past. Maybe it is better for her that she has not doubled. Let's

:10:14. > :10:16.

:10:16. > :10:23.handover to the commentators now. clean sweep with Tirunesh Dibaba and

:10:23. > :10:28.Meseret Defar. But Mercy Cherono has a chance here. She was fifth in the

:10:28. > :10:33.last World Championships. A quick look at the line-up for you. And a

:10:33. > :10:41.lookout for Almaz Ayana who has the second quickest time in the world

:10:41. > :10:51.for you. It is the first five to go through automatically. Just 11

:10:51. > :10:52.

:10:52. > :11:00.running. It could be a straight final. 11 in each heat, the first

:11:00. > :11:05.five go through automatically and then the next five olive fires.

:11:06. > :11:13.are only eliminating six athletes in total. Sorry, seven athletes in

:11:13. > :11:18.total. That means there is a very easy qualification. There is no real

:11:18. > :11:22.incentive for anyone to run quickly. There is only an incentive to stay

:11:22. > :11:30.on your two feet and run in a reasonable time. The first five to

:11:30. > :11:34.go through in each heat and then the five fastest losers. This is the pay

:11:34. > :11:42.is that you or I could have been running at this morning, Andrew, if

:11:42. > :11:51.we had not been here! I would not be pleased with that pace. They are

:11:51. > :11:56.almost at a standstill now. They are just avoiding pitfalls. This is when

:11:56. > :11:59.things can happen when it is crowded. There are the Americans

:11:59. > :12:09.Shannon Rowbury and Molly Huddle. She is a good five thousand metre

:12:09. > :12:10.

:12:10. > :12:13.runner. Shannon Rowbury gets a bit lost when it stretches out to 5000m.

:12:14. > :12:21.Huddle is someone to watch. But you are watching out for the East

:12:21. > :12:26.Africans, the Ethiopians and Kenyans. There are three Ethiopians

:12:26. > :12:34.now running for other countries like Belgium, the United Arab Emirates

:12:34. > :12:40.and Bahrain. Paula is watching. This is a six minute mile pace. I know

:12:40. > :12:45.you have a bad foot at the moment, you could have stayed with this.

:12:45. > :12:48.could have stayed with it. Whether I could have had spikes and stayed on

:12:48. > :12:55.the track is a different matter. They look like they are almost

:12:55. > :12:58.walking. Somebody surely is going to snap in a minute, otherwise they are

:12:59. > :13:07.making it very easy for the second heat because otherwise all thy have

:13:07. > :13:12.to do is run a half decent pace and ten will go through from that heat.

:13:12. > :13:17.They are going through to the second lap. I do not think I have ever seen

:13:17. > :13:22.three minutes for two laps of the track in a championship. They are

:13:22. > :13:28.picking up a little. Can they go through the three minute barrier for

:13:28. > :13:33.two laps? There are a few of them who would not have been disqualified

:13:33. > :13:40.for lifting in the 50 K walk. Here we are, the pace is picking up a

:13:40. > :13:45.little bit which is good to see. Molly Huddle decides to stretch it a

:13:45. > :13:50.little bit alongside the Frenchwoman, Sophie Duarte. Three

:13:50. > :13:56.minutes, three seconds for two laps, I think it is a world record

:13:56. > :14:01.slowed time indeed championships. Welcome to Moscow and welcome to the

:14:01. > :14:07.heats of the 5000m. They will of course begin to pick up the pace and

:14:07. > :14:15.things will become respectable but we are not heading for a quick time.

:14:15. > :14:19.It is the next five fastest who make it through. I think those who are

:14:19. > :14:27.running in the second semifinal, which includes Meseret Defar, they

:14:27. > :14:35.will be aware that they do not have to go too quickly to beat this. You

:14:35. > :14:39.find there are a smattering of spectators early. The contrast

:14:39. > :14:44.between this morning and last night when Isinbayeva was doing magical

:14:44. > :14:49.things in the pole vault, the atmosphere was wonderful. It will be

:14:49. > :14:54.again in the evening sessions. This morning, it is a gentle easing into

:14:54. > :14:58.the day and certainly a gentle easing into this race for these

:14:58. > :15:05.athletes. Looking around the crowds this morning, we were really pleased

:15:05. > :15:10.there was a big crowd last night. The IAAF are discussing in detail

:15:10. > :15:16.what to do with these championships. Is it too long a period? Is it too

:15:16. > :15:19.thinly spaced? Do they need fewer days? Last year in London, in the

:15:19. > :15:24.Olympic Games, crowds in the morning and the crowds in the evening were

:15:24. > :15:29.such that we came to have high expectations. But track and field

:15:29. > :15:32.athletics is not a major sport in this country. They have had great

:15:32. > :15:36.athlete in history and great performers. We saw one of the best

:15:36. > :15:43.reformers last night, but it is not a sport which has a huge following

:15:43. > :15:46.in this country. When we looked at the Olympics last year, for 2012, I

:15:46. > :15:52.know the UK athletics Federation are out here talking about 27 team and

:15:52. > :15:55.one would imagine that the 2017 World Championships, back in the

:15:55. > :16:05.Olympic Stadium in London, I would sense there might be a few more

:16:05. > :16:22.

:16:22. > :16:27.struggling Perhaps to get the attention, the promotion. People

:16:27. > :16:33.automatically criticise crowds like this. You have seen what is

:16:33. > :16:43.possible at the Olympics when the morning session sold out. The pace

:16:43. > :16:46.

:16:46. > :16:56.it is picking up. The Ethiopian now running for Bahrain is running at

:16:56. > :17:12.

:17:12. > :17:22.the brunt. -- the front. We have lost one out the back. Has Muriuki

:17:22. > :17:25.

:17:25. > :17:31.been spiked questor much she is not able to run properly. -- spiked?

:17:31. > :17:39.Unfortunately, one of the fastest athletes in the world this year.

:17:39. > :17:44.That is a bit of a disappointment for her. She would have been among

:17:44. > :17:54.the favourites. Sadly, she is sitting out and watching the race

:17:54. > :17:54.

:17:54. > :18:01.and her team-mate, who is still out there. Mercy Cherono is still out

:18:01. > :18:11.there. They are running at the reasonable lap pace. They look more

:18:11. > :18:12.

:18:12. > :18:16.comfortable. When you are jogging, a nurse comes into play. -- nerves

:18:16. > :18:26.come into play. I do not think more than five will be able to make it

:18:26. > :18:27.

:18:27. > :18:35.from this round. Muriuki his feeling her calf. She is struggling

:18:35. > :18:45.with it. She could have challenged for a medal. It is now five from 10.

:18:45. > :18:48.

:18:48. > :18:58.One Kenyan remains. Mercy Cherono pulls them away. Almaz Ayana is the

:18:58. > :19:04.quickest in the world. Along with the Bahraini an athlete, they at

:19:04. > :19:09.easing their way clear. You want to see what is in your legs. You want

:19:09. > :19:14.to give yourself a decent run out. They have not really done that

:19:14. > :19:22.today put up the first part was so slow. They are operating at a

:19:22. > :19:28.reasonable pace. At least the race is getting going. Both you and I

:19:28. > :19:36.will be disappointed not seeing a British athlete in this race.

:19:36. > :19:43.really feel that Stet 12 missing out on the qualifying time by --

:19:43. > :19:48.Stephanie Twell missing out on the qualifying time by 0.6 of a second.

:19:48. > :19:55.What she actually did in Paris in the Diamond League was to get a

:19:55. > :19:59.number of athletes together, including Sophie Duarte, and she

:19:59. > :20:04.said, let's work together to get the time. She did the bulk of the

:20:04. > :20:08.work that did not have the finishing kick for the A standard.

:20:09. > :20:13.Had she been here, I do not think the pace would have been so slow. I

:20:13. > :20:23.think she would have got out that and given themselves a working

:20:23. > :20:23.

:20:23. > :20:31.chance of some bustard users coming from this heat. -- the fastest

:20:31. > :20:37.losers. There is no big advantage in not selecting someone. Alison

:20:37. > :20:42.why it is in the stands. She is an official with British athletics.

:20:42. > :20:47.She will be feeling like you and I, wishing we were watching a British

:20:47. > :20:54.athlete. She was that British athlete. She was someone who really

:20:54. > :20:58.helped me when I came into the team as a gangster. She is one of the

:20:58. > :21:04.people who really taught me if I was running in the second heat, you

:21:04. > :21:14.get out into the tunnel and you get as much information as possible

:21:14. > :21:14.

:21:14. > :21:19.from the first heat so you know what you are aiming for. Alison is

:21:19. > :21:28.looking interestingly at this event. She was an athlete who had

:21:28. > :21:35.accomplished and awful lot in her career. With Stephanie Twell just

:21:35. > :21:39.being outside the a standard. She won the British championships. If

:21:39. > :21:44.you have not been an you miss out on the standard, you have a better

:21:44. > :21:49.chance of being selected. You cannot go because you have had your

:21:49. > :21:56.shot. That seems contrary to the way it should be able stuck I think

:21:56. > :22:03.beach start building a campaign. it should be. I think we should

:22:03. > :22:08.start building a campaign. You need to give more incentive for athletes.

:22:08. > :22:13.There is nothing wrong with being the best in Britain. Sometimes, we

:22:13. > :22:19.should make efforts to try to bring them to the championships. You

:22:19. > :22:29.cannot win anything if you are at home and watching the television.

:22:29. > :22:38.Almaz Ayana it is one of the favourites to get to the final. It

:22:38. > :22:46.is the first five to go through. Then the pocket of three. That

:22:46. > :22:51.includes the two Americans. Three laps to go in the first heat of the

:22:51. > :22:55.women's 5000 metres. We have talked about qualification been

:22:55. > :23:02.particularly comfortable with the first five going through pull stub

:23:02. > :23:11.we are looking at the five. They are clear. -- are going through.

:23:11. > :23:21.There are two groups of two. The 5th athlete is pulling clear.

:23:21. > :23:24.

:23:24. > :23:31.Messager Renault is leading. Molly Huddle and Shannon Rowbury are also

:23:31. > :23:37.there. -- Mercy Cherono. They have learned the ropes. They have been

:23:37. > :23:47.here. They know what they need to do in the final on Saturday. The

:23:47. > :23:56.

:23:56. > :24:01.good news for America is the two We have talked about Shannon

:24:01. > :24:11.Rowbury and Molly Huddle. Shannon Rowbury would have loved to have

:24:11. > :24:13.

:24:13. > :24:19.been in the 1500 but she ran a poor race in the European Championships.

:24:19. > :24:23.Instead, Sarah Brown came over. She came across with a day's

:24:23. > :24:28.preparation and ran well in the heats. She went out in the semi-

:24:29. > :24:38.final. Shannon Rowbury would have had a very good chance to have gone

:24:39. > :24:44.

:24:44. > :24:49.into the final. We have Mercy Cherono and the two Americans. And

:24:49. > :24:56.Sophie Duarte, the French athlete, is trying to close her down. The

:24:56. > :25:01.French record holder in the steeplechase. Only five go through

:25:01. > :25:06.automatically. If the gap is not closed, I think she will be out.

:25:06. > :25:13.The five fastest may well not come from this race due to the very

:25:13. > :25:18.lethargic start. We thought Sophie Duarte would have run better than

:25:18. > :25:22.that. The second half has been quicker. Mercy Cherono in second

:25:22. > :25:29.place is running comfortably. Ben Molly Huddle of the United States,

:25:29. > :25:37.having a bit of a workout. Shannon Rowbury just jogging in 4th place.

:25:37. > :25:46.They are well on their way through. The format Ethiopian athlete is now

:25:46. > :25:54.comfortably in 5th place. Almaz Ayana looks like she is ready to

:25:54. > :25:59.compete, even today. These athletes are getting an easy day out - an

:25:59. > :26:04.easy qualification. Sophie Duarte will be the 6th athlete. I would be

:26:05. > :26:14.very surprised if that is fast enough to go through. The final is

:26:14. > :26:17.taking place on Saturday. Mercy Cherono will take it. A few days'

:26:17. > :26:27.rest and they will probably go again this afternoon with the pace

:26:27. > :26:34.

:26:34. > :26:44.they have ran. Molly Huddle in third place and Shannon Rowbury in

:26:44. > :26:51.

:26:51. > :26:59.force. The Bahraini in athlete comfortably qualified. She is now

:26:59. > :27:09.thinking about coming here on Saturday into the finishing

:27:09. > :27:10.

:27:10. > :27:20.straight. The natural rivalry between Almaz Ayana and Mercy

:27:20. > :27:20.

:27:20. > :27:30.Cherono - they can choose in this race. -- their countries in this

:27:30. > :27:40.

:27:40. > :27:46.race. You can see Shannon Rowbury hammer throw qualifying competition

:27:46. > :27:52.is on. Sophie Hitchon the British record holder goes in the second

:27:53. > :27:58.pull in about an hour's time. Betty Heidler, the world record holder,

:27:58. > :28:02.is in that group. The defending world champion is also in this

:28:02. > :28:07.group. The Asian record holder and bronze medallist at the 2008

:28:08. > :28:14.Olympics. They are the longer throwers in the group. Betty

:28:14. > :28:19.Heidler has not got a great record in qualifying competitions. She

:28:19. > :28:24.totally blew out in last year's European Championships in the

:28:24. > :28:29.build-up to the Olympics. She did come back with an Olympic bronze

:28:29. > :28:39.medal. She is the world record holder. That is not good - a bit of

:28:39. > :28:40.

:28:40. > :28:47.balance towards the end. Just over the 65 metre line. There is the

:28:47. > :28:51.good work. Four turns on the heel and the toe. You can tell from the

:28:51. > :29:01.expression on her face she did not really like pitbull but she could

:29:01. > :29:06.

:29:06. > :29:16.not get any real strength behind the delivery. -- like it. Anna

:29:16. > :29:16.

:29:16. > :29:26.Bulgakova, the lesser known of the two Russians in this group. Tatyana

:29:26. > :29:35.

:29:35. > :29:40.Lysenko is the defending record the end. That is the first

:29:40. > :29:50.automatic qualifier. That is the longest throw we have seen by far

:29:50. > :29:54.

:29:54. > :30:03.in this group. Wenxiu Zhang it is in second place at the moment but

:30:03. > :30:08.Anna Bulgakova really got behind that. She is through. First place.

:30:08. > :30:12.The Olympic champion is in the stadium. Greg Rutherford attempts

:30:12. > :30:18.to qualify for the final of the long jump. So much doubt about

:30:18. > :30:25.whether he would be hit or not. The qualifying distance is certainly

:30:25. > :30:34.within his scope. He has three attempts to clear a height will be

:30:34. > :30:44.one of the top 12 performers. -- the height all be one of the top 12

:30:44. > :30:48.

:30:48. > :30:53.side of the arena, just getting his last-minute preparations done

:30:53. > :31:03.before the qualifying competition starts. Almost directly opposite

:31:03. > :31:06.

:31:06. > :31:16.the commentary box. Just a little way to the left-hand side - the

:31:16. > :31:35.

:31:35. > :31:40.go through so why not ten from this final. Easy, right? I am sure Steph

:31:40. > :31:49.is sitting there thinking why am I not hear? The others have two run

:31:49. > :31:56.under 16 minute pace. It is, ten will go through from here. A bit of

:31:56. > :32:01.work together. A fairly straightforward Wednesday morning.

:32:01. > :32:05.Ten o'clock. If somebody said to you just need to run 16 minutes to

:32:05. > :32:10.qualify for the world championship final, I am sure any of these women

:32:10. > :32:20.would be delighted with that opportunity. The name to pick out,

:32:20. > :32:55.

:32:55. > :33:01.Meseret Defar. Her team-mate oozed to the 5000m final, that is why the

:33:01. > :33:05.likes of Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar have won so many titles.

:33:05. > :33:09.Forget the Olympic Games, she is the Olympic champion of course. Let's

:33:09. > :33:19.talk about the world championship 5000m. Meseret Defar has never been

:33:19. > :33:20.

:33:20. > :33:30.out of the top three on four occasions. She is getting a nice

:33:30. > :33:36.cheer from the rather sparse crowd in this morning. I will pick up

:33:36. > :33:41.Brendan's point, you can see a sparse crowd but if there are

:33:41. > :33:45.tickets available, Wednesday morning, heats in the 5000, Heaton

:33:45. > :33:51.1500, qualification going on, it is not a great incentive, is it? It

:33:51. > :33:54.should be one of those three for two offers you are so keen on in the

:33:54. > :34:04.supermarkets! There were more people going the other way when we were on

:34:04. > :34:11.

:34:11. > :34:18.the tube this morning than coming the blue and yellow contingent. They

:34:18. > :34:26.have not all turned up. The second heat of the women's 5000m. After

:34:26. > :34:32.that dawdle through the first two War three laps. That meant that all

:34:32. > :34:38.of these women, with the exception of the athlete from Georgia, have a

:34:38. > :34:48.brilliant opportunity of getting through to the final. The top five

:34:48. > :34:58.

:34:58. > :35:08.other than help each other out a little bit. It is nice to see the

:35:08. > :35:13.

:35:13. > :35:23.USA and Russia, friends that the the first lap of this one faster

:35:23. > :35:27.

:35:27. > :35:34.than the last one? It is going to be faster! Dolores Checa of Spain just

:35:34. > :35:41.gliding to the front there. They just need to keep moaning like this,

:35:41. > :35:51.nice and comfortable. Everybody should be OK. There is the Ukrainian

:35:51. > :36:23.

:36:23. > :36:28.crowd. There is a whole bunch of this morning, one of our great 5000m

:36:28. > :36:38.exponents. We were chatting about this qualification for the 5000. I

:36:38. > :36:42.will maybe bring Paula in on this as well, we had a shot of Alison Wyeth,

:36:42. > :36:48.and she is the seventh best ever British athlete but she did not

:36:48. > :36:53.break 15 minutes, a very good athlete, she came to major

:36:53. > :36:56.championships, 15 minutes, just outside, is her best. If you take

:36:57. > :37:02.out all of the African runners, there are not many women in the

:37:02. > :37:07.world running under that. A lot of the European athletes. That is quite

:37:07. > :37:12.a tough qualification. I think the a standard was a bit tough. We could

:37:12. > :37:15.certainly have taken someone here. It is a very tough nullification.

:37:15. > :37:19.Alison Wyeth will be very embarrassed this morning that we

:37:19. > :37:23.have been concentrating on her. She did not come here to be

:37:23. > :37:33.photographed, she came to watch the event she so much loved and was part

:37:33. > :38:01.

:38:02. > :38:11.One of the best throwers in the world consistently. The Asian

:38:12. > :38:21.

:38:21. > :38:31.only a qualifying mark but over 75 metres. Totally impassive. No

:38:31. > :38:37.

:38:37. > :38:42.reaction at all but it was a good is well in excess of the qualifying

:38:43. > :38:48.line. That is the best she has thrown this year and she is through

:38:48. > :38:55.to the final. Tatiana is then co-on her first

:38:55. > :39:05.throw, the defending champion, crashed the hammer into the cage. --

:39:05. > :39:36.

:39:36. > :39:42.She has proved that time and time qualifying for Sophie in the

:39:42. > :39:47.hammer, the women's second heat of the 5000m, these ten athletes are

:39:47. > :39:51.well on their way to qualifying. Paula, I know you are listening to

:39:51. > :39:58.qualification, where you telling me that in your day the qualifying time

:39:58. > :40:06.or something like 15.40. Yes, the qualifying time was 15.45 and then

:40:06. > :40:12.came down to 15.35 and has recently come down to 15.20 and 15.18. That

:40:12. > :40:19.is tough. It is reflected by the fact that we have only have 11 in

:40:19. > :40:24.each heat today. Also in the men's 1500 we have seen the standard come

:40:24. > :40:34.down in the same way. There are a decent number of guys qualifying but

:40:34. > :40:43.

:40:43. > :40:49.it is to my mind a tough standard There is a good standard there.

:40:49. > :40:52.There are a few people missing here. The overall depth is not as good as

:40:52. > :41:02.it can be. Even from Great Britain there is no Julia Bleasdale who is

:41:02. > :41:03.

:41:03. > :41:09.injured. And Jo Pavey. Brendan is our maternity experts sometimes. As

:41:09. > :41:15.we have watched events develop, and the women's 5000 has developed,

:41:15. > :41:19.Paula making the observation about altercation times coming down, I

:41:19. > :41:24.think you have to leave the door open for another nations to be

:41:24. > :41:28.sending an athlete if they want to. There are plenty of 5000m runners in

:41:28. > :41:32.the world. And there are plenty running within 15 and a half

:41:32. > :41:35.minutes. The opportunities are few and far between and this is an

:41:35. > :41:40.opportunity missing for a few athletes. We are disappointed that

:41:40. > :41:50.it is missing for British athletes. We are looking in the middle of the

:41:50. > :41:50.

:41:50. > :41:58.group at the former junior champion, Viola Kibiwot from Kenya. And behind

:41:58. > :42:05.that, the double Olympic champion and world champion, Meseret Defar.

:42:05. > :42:10.When you talk about the other athletes like Haile Gebrselassie,

:42:10. > :42:15.they are critical of the Ethiopian athletics Federation. She will want

:42:15. > :42:19.to run the five and ten but when she has run the five and the ten she has

:42:19. > :42:27.not done well. When she has tried to double up she has not had good

:42:27. > :42:30.results. So maybe the selectors in Ethiopian are doing her a favour.

:42:30. > :42:36.They are protecting her from herself. She is the outstanding

:42:36. > :42:41.favourite for this event. Tirunesh Dibaba, the Empress, the greatest

:42:41. > :42:44.female athlete in the history of track and field athletics, five

:42:44. > :42:49.World Championships, gold medals, three Olympic Games titles, no woman

:42:49. > :42:52.has ever won more gold medals at these championships than Tirunesh

:42:52. > :42:57.Dibaba and she has probably not even turned up to watch this this

:42:57. > :43:01.morning. She and her sister are two of the fastest 5000m runners in the

:43:01. > :43:08.world but they were not allowed to run in this event. I think the

:43:08. > :43:18.Ethiopian selectors have for once done a good job. , her sister, was

:43:18. > :43:21.

:43:21. > :43:28.that an estate? She out kicked Meseret Defar in Shanghai. That

:43:28. > :43:33.could have gone horribly wrong. I do not think she will contender in the

:43:34. > :43:39.1500. They may have been able to get a one, two, three. But you will not

:43:39. > :43:44.get a one, two, three without the great Tirunesh Dibaba. And her

:43:44. > :43:49.sister moved down from distance races, she won the world junior

:43:49. > :43:51.cross country. The reason she did that was she was training in Haile

:43:51. > :43:56.Gebrselassie's gym regularly in Ethiopian and he would be training

:43:57. > :44:03.with her. He started to notice her style, particularly her body shape,

:44:03. > :44:07.her legs. He went to the sisters and said she would be a better runner

:44:07. > :44:17.over the shorter distance than over the longer distance. So she stepped

:44:17. > :44:27.

:44:27. > :44:31.down from the 1500m dash back to the this. Maybe not. The women's 1500m

:44:31. > :44:38.final tomorrow night. Hannah England made it through which was great. She

:44:39. > :44:43.will be in that final. The women's 800 rounds will be starting as

:44:43. > :44:53.well. We have just jarred and Marilyn Okoro going in the 800. The

:44:53. > :44:53.

:44:53. > :45:46.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:45:46. > :45:56.pace is picking up slightly. They do and bidding hundred as well. She is

:45:56. > :46:04.

:46:04. > :46:10.the Dutch athlete. -- the 1500. The pace has picked up a bit. Maybe Kim

:46:10. > :46:16.Conley wants to stretch out a little bit. Three laps to go.

:46:16. > :46:21.minutes and three laps to go. They need to go steadily. Five athletes

:46:21. > :46:29.will be qualifiers of right and the five fastest losers. They only need

:46:29. > :46:36.to run at this kind of pace and all 10 will go through. When you come

:46:36. > :46:44.here and know what you have to do, at the end of the day, there is one

:46:44. > :46:51.athlete behind them all. The Georgian is being lapped up already.

:46:51. > :46:56.The 10 of them are easily through. Fellow competitors with 1000 metres

:46:56. > :47:04.to go. Try and impress them that you are running well and feeling

:47:04. > :47:14.good. Do not do anything and necessary. I am looking at Meseret

:47:14. > :47:14.

:47:14. > :47:22.Defar in 4th place. Dolores Checa has done enough and is off the back

:47:22. > :47:28.of the group. Here they are. The 10 have the chance of running through.

:47:28. > :47:38.Just over 13 minutes. Easy running. A wonder if each of them knows what

:47:38. > :47:48.

:47:48. > :47:58.to do. They were out on the back the Australian art the drift of the

:47:58. > :48:01.

:48:01. > :48:08.group, absolutely no problem. -- are adrift. That is a 71. Kim

:48:08. > :48:14.Conley continues to wind it up. I do not know. Maybe they did not

:48:14. > :48:21.look. They set out with that intent. They must have known. They went

:48:21. > :48:27.through the first km a bit quicker but this is unnecessary. They went

:48:27. > :48:34.with the pace and that is fine. There are six of them in the group

:48:34. > :48:42.and they are working hard for it. It is easy qualification. Ms Tripp

:48:42. > :48:48.Dave Barr has seen -- Meseret Defar has seen the athletes in the group.

:48:48. > :48:58.It is Wednesday morning and they are running up by 0 on Saturday.

:48:58. > :49:08.Not too much damage. -- running the final. I have never seen screens on

:49:08. > :49:24.

:49:24. > :49:31.the back straights. The athletes the Olympic champion - side by side.

:49:31. > :49:37.One of rivalry, Ethiopia/Kenya followed by another one -

:49:37. > :49:47.USA/Russia behind. Those are the top five by rights. Everyone else

:49:47. > :50:02.

:50:02. > :50:12.athletes - all well qualified. A little bit of a stretch out for

:50:12. > :50:15.

:50:15. > :50:21.Meseret Defar. She has pace to burn. No surprises in the women's 5000.

:50:21. > :50:27.You cannot look beyond her. will want to assert her point. The

:50:27. > :50:33.Olympic champion last year. Favourite for the event. It never

:50:33. > :50:41.does you any harm. Let them know you are the boss. She may have a

:50:41. > :50:46.good future ahead of her. Meseret Defar, a fantastic athlete. By far

:50:46. > :50:50.the favourite for this event. We will look forward to the final on

:50:50. > :50:58.Saturday. The top five go through. Everyone else behind them will join

:50:58. > :51:03.them as fast as losers in the final on Friday. -- fastest losers. The

:51:04. > :51:09.long jump competition will start in five minutes' time. Greg Rutherford

:51:09. > :51:17.is safely through his warm up. He seems to be running well. He has

:51:17. > :51:25.not taken off at 100%. He goes in about 10 minutes. The qualifying

:51:25. > :51:30.distance, at 8.10 metres. Back at the hummer... Betty Heidler, the

:51:30. > :51:35.world record holder, is beginning to gain a reputation as being a

:51:35. > :51:41.little bit flaky in hammer qualifying competitions. She has

:51:41. > :51:48.done it before. She needs something exceptionally good and she has not

:51:48. > :51:56.got it. Betty Heidler could be on her way out of the competition. Her

:51:56. > :52:04.best throw so far 68 point 83 metres. She is only in 9th place in

:52:04. > :52:11.the qualifying pool. Real problems for the world record holder. She

:52:11. > :52:21.will need to sit it out and wait and see. Here is the result of what

:52:21. > :52:28.

:52:28. > :52:33.happened during the first throws officio and Tatyana Lysenko,

:52:33. > :52:39.the defending world champion, she goes through comfortably on her

:52:39. > :52:43.second throw. Everybody else, including the very talented Jeneva

:52:43. > :52:53.McCall of the United States we need to see whether their distances are

:52:53. > :53:03.

:53:03. > :53:10.We are going to chat a bit about selection. congratulations on

:53:10. > :53:16.making the 5000 metre heats where good when they were not. They were

:53:16. > :53:22.an illustration of the fact team management now is not what it used

:53:22. > :53:31.to be. It goes back to my point about Eilish McColgan not knowing

:53:31. > :53:37.what times she was running. She did not believe us when Steve told her

:53:37. > :53:43.she had qualified. Essentially it was a warm up. I will let you off

:53:43. > :53:47.but you did not answer the question. Because the focus on people making

:53:47. > :53:52.finals - perhaps a lack of development opportunities for

:53:52. > :53:58.athletes. We were talking about Stephanie Twell. This comes from

:53:58. > :54:02.your former coach and the regime he created. I think it goes one step

:54:02. > :54:07.before that. We had a team of people that were just getting on to

:54:07. > :54:12.the team and not performing when we got here. We had this attitude

:54:12. > :54:17.where people were getting the British vest, turning up, going out

:54:17. > :54:23.in the first round and we thought that was acceptable. We had to be

:54:23. > :54:26.tougher. We got the system way you need to be accountable, you need to

:54:27. > :54:30.perform, look at training programmes to get to the

:54:30. > :54:35.championships. Charles has gone and everyone is breathing a sigh of

:54:35. > :54:41.relief. We are caught between, should we be tough or should be

:54:41. > :54:45.slack off a bit? I believe that athletes and young athletes need

:54:45. > :54:51.the chance to come to championships like this. It takes time to perform

:54:51. > :54:56.and behave in this pressure-cooker situation which is the World

:54:56. > :55:01.Championships. Do you get a better athlete? Do you become a better

:55:01. > :55:07.athlete by being thrown in the deep end and performing terribly? How

:55:07. > :55:13.does that help you later on in your career? I am not sure. Respected

:55:13. > :55:18.Charles when he was head coach. He said it did not make a huge amount

:55:18. > :55:23.of difference. It did not make a huge amount of difference coming to

:55:23. > :55:27.the championships. How do you know unless you come and you get the

:55:27. > :55:34.chance to try to perform? Nobody comes with the intention of

:55:34. > :55:42.performing badly. Every mum wants to run well. -- everyone wants to

:55:42. > :55:49.run well. Saviour to Rutty is gutted and she has learnt a

:55:49. > :55:54.valuable lesson. -- Sophie Duarte. Neil Black, in the centre, he is

:55:54. > :56:00.the performance director. He did have the flexibility to change that

:56:00. > :56:04.policy and be able to select those people who were so close to the

:56:04. > :56:10.standard. Are they going to make the top eight? Unless they have the

:56:10. > :56:14.chance, you do not know. UK Sports Fund UK Athletics on the basis of

:56:14. > :56:20.medals. They have a limited pot of money and they said they will throw

:56:20. > :56:25.it into a team of 30, 40 or 50 rather than 70 or 80, to make sure

:56:25. > :56:31.athletes who will win medals have what they need. That is the

:56:31. > :56:36.difficulty. It is all based on finance. Each year, you have to

:56:36. > :56:40.look at the goals collectively from a sport. We have had a very

:56:40. > :56:47.successful Olympics and we need to look ahead to Rio and building

:56:47. > :56:52.depth in our team. In some events, we have no athletes. They need to

:56:52. > :56:57.encourage athletes to think bigger and perform better. They need to be

:56:57. > :57:01.here in some about events. We are in Moscow and not Brisbane a way of

:57:01. > :57:07.talking about five or six athletes who could have come and it would

:57:07. > :57:13.have made a difference to their development, the strength of the

:57:13. > :57:23.team and they could build on that for Rio. Here is what is still to

:57:23. > :57:27.

:57:27. > :57:31.qualification of the men's long jump. Fingers crossed for his

:57:31. > :57:37.hamstrings. Sophie Hitchon, a British record holder, has been in

:57:37. > :57:44.fine form this season. It will be tough qualification in the hammer.

:57:44. > :57:49.Chris O'Hare goes in the heats of the men's 1500m. He won the

:57:49. > :57:57.European Championships earlier this year. There is the Olympic champion

:57:57. > :58:02.rubbing his hamstring a little bit. He is here. You have to reassess

:58:02. > :58:07.and go for it. He has made the decision to come. He had every

:58:07. > :58:13.reason not to be here. It is important for him to try to back up

:58:13. > :58:19.his Olympic gold with another medal. Is it realistic? We do not know the

:58:19. > :58:26.state of his body right now that he is hopeful, I am sure. Another

:58:26. > :58:34.selection type., the a standard for the men's long jump was 8.25 metres.

:58:34. > :58:39.It would have won a silver medal in London. Absolutely. Is it really

:58:39. > :58:43.realistic? Have they looked at the depth and standard of events

:58:43. > :58:51.worldwide and set the standard accordingly. For the long jump, I

:58:51. > :59:01.do not think they have. Steve Cram will be commentating on the 1500m

:59:01. > :59:13.

:59:13. > :59:21.in a moment. First, best. Steve all the time. The Moroccan and

:59:21. > :59:27.Leeds. The small, slender figure of Steve Cram in second place. And

:59:27. > :59:33.Steve Ovett trying to get through on the inside. He has got through.

:59:33. > :59:43.He was knocked off the track slightly. Has he gone too soon?

:59:43. > :59:45.

:59:45. > :59:52.Steve Cram leading. Steve Ovett in 5th. Steve Cram is leading. He has

:59:52. > :00:01.done it! He is three yards clear. Steve Cram wins the World

:00:02. > :00:11.Championship will stop -- the World Championship. What a marvellous win

:00:12. > :00:18.

:00:18. > :00:24.little flag. She did not think it looked very match oh. Could you not

:00:24. > :00:29.find a better one? ? In those days it was not showbiz. That was the

:00:29. > :00:35.best I could come up with that the time. I was not happy with the music

:00:35. > :00:41.on that clip either. Give it up? Happy memories. There is my flag. A

:00:41. > :00:48.little bit pathetic, wasn't it? It was a great championships, Helsinki.

:00:48. > :00:51.We have talked about this before. The boycott we have had in Moscow

:00:51. > :01:01.before. Talking about altercation standards, I remember that initially

:01:01. > :01:07.they said it would be the top 14 or 15 per event, it ended up the top

:01:07. > :01:13.three per country. It seems like ancient history now, unfortunately.

:01:13. > :01:18.Talk us through the race. How did it go? The bloke who is next to me,

:01:18. > :01:27.Brendan was a key figure in that. I knew all about Steve Ovett and Steve

:01:27. > :01:33.Scott. He was the world number one. But there was an athlete from

:01:33. > :01:38.Morocco. I did not know too much about him. I had never raced him.

:01:38. > :01:44.Brendan had heard a rumour that he might push on from 600 or 700m out.

:01:44. > :01:49.That is what I might have done. When I heard that he might do that, it

:01:49. > :01:54.was great practical. The third lap was a slow. I was watching him. He

:01:54. > :01:59.went first, I was able to follow him, let us all out and 200 to go, I

:01:59. > :02:03.went past him. The 1500m finals in any championships are often

:02:03. > :02:08.tactical. In those days they were often more tactical than quick. I

:02:08. > :02:11.have always held that up as one of my better cat graces. If you get

:02:11. > :02:16.everything right on the day and you end up winning the gold medal then

:02:16. > :02:21.brilliant. Prerace intelligence helps as well and I had a good

:02:21. > :02:29.little spy. Indeed. And in terms of all your achievements in your

:02:29. > :02:33.career, where would that rank? think it is right up there. To go to

:02:33. > :02:40.a major championships and run, I would probably have to give myself

:02:40. > :02:43.ten out of ten. You go, you make plans and you think, if he does that

:02:43. > :02:50.then I will do this. It was one of those occasions when it all played

:02:50. > :02:55.out that way. For many years after that, I used to think about world

:02:55. > :02:59.records and thankfully I was able to do that as well. But the essence of

:02:59. > :03:04.1500 metre running is pitting yourself mentally, not just

:03:04. > :03:10.physically, the other guys are the best in the world, their tactics and

:03:10. > :03:14.your tactics. That race was a great example of that. Side is still a

:03:14. > :03:18.great friend of mine. He is working at these championships. I met up

:03:18. > :03:24.with Steve Scott for lunch in the states. And Steve Ovett is here as

:03:24. > :03:28.well. I still have great friends from them. And how important was

:03:28. > :03:35.Moscow in 1980. We have been talking about selection and experience. Did

:03:35. > :03:40.that have a big impact on how you ran in your career? We played a film

:03:40. > :03:44.last night when I said that. Moscow was a pivotal point in my career,

:03:45. > :03:48.coming there is a 19-year-old. I scraped into the final by two

:03:48. > :03:57.hundredths of a second. But the experience I got, even if I had not

:03:57. > :03:59.got to the final was incredible. It was not just my experience, it was

:03:59. > :04:04.watching Sebastien Coe and Steve Ovett, learning from the two masters

:04:04. > :04:07.at the time, watching how they conducted themselves. It is not only

:04:07. > :04:14.your personal experience, it is watching the good guys. What does Mo

:04:14. > :04:19.Farah do? Brendan, it was watching what he did, Moorcroft, and Daley

:04:19. > :04:26.Thompson. You watch the top hole in your team and you learn from them. I

:04:26. > :04:31.think that is why coming to major championships is important. OK. The

:04:31. > :04:41.1500m heats are coming up in a moment with Asbel Kiprop. But now to

:04:41. > :05:00.

:05:00. > :05:08.can see there. There has hardly been any wind in this stadium during

:05:08. > :05:15.these championships. It is Sebastien Beyer of Germany who leads at the

:05:15. > :05:22.moment from both qualifying pools. And Dwight Phillips, the great

:05:22. > :05:32.champion from the United States has jumped 7.95, a season's best. 7.814

:05:32. > :05:40.

:05:40. > :05:47.Greg. An easy entry into this to his coach and the coach will tell

:05:47. > :05:57.him what was good, what was bad and what he needs to change. Not too

:05:57. > :06:09.

:06:09. > :06:19.that that that race in Helsinki was 30 years ago today. Happy birthday

:06:19. > :06:19.

:06:19. > :06:29.to me! 30 years ago. You have not changed. You have not aged.Thank

:06:29. > :06:36.

:06:37. > :06:45.you. Chris O'Hare goes in the third field. Here's the defending

:06:45. > :06:53.champion. I think he is the best 1500m talent we have had for a

:06:53. > :07:03.while. We saw great evidence of that in the race in Monaco where Mo Farah

:07:03. > :07:03.

:07:04. > :07:13.broke the record. There are some good athletes in this field. Kiprop

:07:14. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:41.moves to the front. The likes of at the front. Positioning himself.

:07:41. > :07:47.The only thing he will be thinking about is, don't make any mistakes. I

:07:47. > :07:53.will be interested in watching Souleiman. He finished third in the

:07:53. > :08:03.800m last night. He only chose the 800m because he saw David Rhodesia

:08:03. > :08:05.

:08:05. > :08:10.was not running. -- David Rudisha. To get a medal in the 1500m will be

:08:10. > :08:19.a very tall order. That is one athlete that Asbel Kiprop would be

:08:19. > :08:24.nervous. He has had sometimes in the past when his mental ability and his

:08:24. > :08:34.performance has not been equal to his physical ability, Kiprop, but I

:08:34. > :08:41.

:08:41. > :08:51.wonder if it is time for revision. If it is time for revision, that is

:08:51. > :08:51.

:08:52. > :09:01.the man you would look at to do it. This is the part where he can go to

:09:02. > :09:27.

:09:27. > :09:32.sleep, the third lap. But he is the back of the field. Asbel Kiprop

:09:32. > :09:42.had a slight stumble but he is all right. Now there is a race in the

:09:42. > :09:44.

:09:44. > :09:53.back straight. Kip Raab is looking good there. -- Kiprop. Nick Willis

:09:53. > :10:03.has got a lot of work to do. Florian Carvalho is trying to get into the

:10:03. > :10:09.top six. Florian Carvalho of France is trying to make it. It is the

:10:09. > :10:13.Ethiopian who misses out. No problems at the front for temp two

:10:13. > :10:18.and it is that qualification spot we are concentrating on. Florian

:10:18. > :10:23.Carvalho finished in the dark blue for France. This man for Ethiopian

:10:23. > :10:29.has been running very well this year and he was out kicked there. The

:10:29. > :10:36.winning time, 3.3815. They are well capable of finishing much quicker

:10:36. > :10:46.than that. He was in a decent position in the home straight. A bit

:10:46. > :10:46.

:10:46. > :11:27.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:11:27. > :11:37.of a surprise if the Ethiopian goes suffered last night in the 800m.

:11:37. > :12:02.

:12:02. > :12:05.Carvalho qualifies. Wote is out of athlete did not qualify for the last

:12:05. > :12:15.championships but since then he has won the European under 23

:12:15. > :12:55.

:12:55. > :13:05.championships and has improved the final in first place so far.

:13:05. > :13:28.

:13:28. > :13:33.Christian reef of Germany has been the Olympic Games but since then he

:13:33. > :13:40.has jumped well. He has not done any of the Diamond League is but he

:13:40. > :13:46.looks full of confidence there. Just one centimetre short of the

:13:46. > :13:51.qualifier. There is the giant cage surrounding

:13:51. > :14:00.the Hammer Circle. Somewhere in that group is the British record-holder,

:14:00. > :14:07.Sophie Hitchon. Just testing out the circle. What a competitor she has

:14:07. > :14:13.been in recent years. The world junior champion, the European under

:14:13. > :14:22.23 champion and both of those titles were won with the last throes she

:14:22. > :14:31.took in the competition. She is a very good competitor. More from

:14:31. > :14:41.Sophie later. To a backdrop of the Ukrainian

:14:41. > :15:00.

:15:00. > :15:07.support as we move onto the second experienced German. He has been

:15:07. > :15:12.around a long time. It was a very good race, that first heat. There is

:15:12. > :15:22.Silas Kiplagat. Even though he did win the Kenyan trials, Kiprop is the

:15:22. > :15:25.

:15:25. > :15:31.stronger one. Manzano is the silver medallist at the Olympic Games. He

:15:31. > :15:35.got into a bit of bother with waving the Mexican flag on his lap of

:15:35. > :15:45.honour. A proud Mexican American. And you think of the Moroccan

:15:45. > :16:22.

:16:22. > :16:28.in June. -- fast lap. This is the second heat of the men's 1500m. A

:16:28. > :16:38.couple could sneak through as fastest losers. Their first six go

:16:38. > :16:47.through automatically. The Turk went flying off for the first

:16:47. > :16:53.couple of laps. It was a great day - a great performance. He ran 53

:16:53. > :17:03.seconds for the opening lap. He is moving along at a decent pace. He

:17:03. > :17:04.

:17:04. > :17:10.likes running fast and strong. He is moving. The tall Austrian, twice

:17:10. > :17:20.European finalist in this event, moves up behind. This is the second

:17:20. > :17:22.

:17:22. > :17:32.of three heats. 58 seconds through them now. Ozbilen took his name

:17:32. > :17:33.

:17:33. > :17:41.from his manager and godfather. He is finding out what he has got here

:17:41. > :17:49.and is determined to lead them out at a decent pace. Silas Kiplagat is

:17:49. > :17:59.in the middle of the pack - Commonwealth champion. He beat

:17:59. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:21.Asbel Kiprop in the trials. I think if Ozbilen runs a decent race, he

:18:22. > :18:26.could feature. We are talking about challengers for Asbel Kiprop. The

:18:27. > :18:32.nearest challenger to him was Mo Farah. We have been talking about

:18:32. > :18:38.the inability of the Ethiopians not to double up in events. There was

:18:38. > :18:43.suggestion that Mo Farah wanted to do the treble. I'm not sure that

:18:43. > :18:53.would really have been on. I think commonsense prevailed Foster

:18:53. > :19:01.appears a 10,000m runner, 5000 metre runner. -- he is a 10,000m

:19:01. > :19:08.runner. He is brilliant at 1500m. I am sure their heats and final would

:19:08. > :19:14.have taken their toll. Look at Silas Kiplagat on the outside! The

:19:14. > :19:23.red and green of Kenya. He is ready to make a ramp was that he needs to

:19:23. > :19:33.start doing it now. -- make a run. The pace really is picking up as

:19:33. > :19:40.

:19:40. > :19:47.they head down the back straight. Ozbilen his easing his way. These

:19:47. > :19:53.four are away comfortably. Leonel Manzano is also comfortable. He

:19:53. > :20:00.seems to be working hard. These four go through automatically. The

:20:00. > :20:08.time is not as quick as the first heat. I think there will be

:20:08. > :20:17.survivors. The Ethiopian will go through. Silas Kiplagat is looking

:20:17. > :20:27.fairly comfortable. Ozbilen is a better runner than we think. He

:20:27. > :20:37.gave himself the chance to run. Leonel Manzano, the Olympic

:20:37. > :20:38.

:20:38. > :20:45.medallist, came through. Ozbilen maybe one to look at full. Another

:20:45. > :20:55.round. Semi-finals on Saturday. I think Silas Kiplagat was the pick

:20:55. > :21:01.

:21:01. > :21:08.out of that group. One more heat to go. Next up is Chris O'Hare. He has

:21:08. > :21:16.a real opportunity. You could come 7th or eighth and qualifying. He is

:21:16. > :21:25.coming up in the final heat of the 1500 in the next couple of minutes.

:21:25. > :21:31.Back to the long jump. The South African. Only 7.6 D8 in the first

:21:31. > :21:41.round. He is a former Olympic silver medallist. He is a very fine

:21:41. > :21:45.athlete when he is on form. We have the Spaniard who is leading at the

:21:45. > :21:55.moment in the qualifying competition. Christian Reif of

:21:55. > :22:08.

:22:08. > :22:15.place. The South African news up and is now in 6th place. -- moves

:22:15. > :22:25.up. I hope Chris O'Hare is OK. He is kneeling on the track, may be

:22:25. > :22:31.

:22:31. > :22:37.concentrating. Let's hear from him time, you know everybody. When you

:22:37. > :22:42.come back, everything is a bit foreign to you. It is not too bad.

:22:42. > :22:47.You have had the experience. Coming back, it gives you more of an

:22:47. > :22:51.insight as to what you need to do to make it to the World

:22:51. > :22:57.Championships. It has provided me with an opportunity to get a great

:22:57. > :23:05.education as well, which, otherwise, I might not have done. The

:23:05. > :23:10.facilities and staff - everything - is at your disposal. At the lower

:23:10. > :23:16.levels, it is sometimes more difficult - especially being up in

:23:16. > :23:20.Scotland. A bit less gets filtered up. It is great. I am blessed I

:23:20. > :23:28.have been given the opportunity to go out there and make a name for

:23:28. > :23:32.myself. I do not want to go on record and safe I want a gold medal.

:23:32. > :23:37.That would be unrealistic. I think I will probably leave the

:23:37. > :23:43.championships disappointed unless I get a medal. This Championship is a

:23:43. > :23:47.building block on the way to begat and better things. I am very

:23:47. > :23:57.thankful I have been given this opportunity to hopefully gain some

:23:57. > :24:00.

:24:00. > :24:06.experience to be able to Murdoch in future games. -- medal. It is a big

:24:06. > :24:13.moment for Chris O'Hare. He needs to stay in contact and hope it is

:24:13. > :24:18.not too quick. He has run personal bests all year. He has been

:24:18. > :24:23.training really hard. I am admiring his approach to all of this. He is

:24:23. > :24:33.a very level-headed young man. There are some very good young

:24:33. > :24:37.

:24:37. > :24:44.athletes in here. The young American, at Matthew Centrowitz,

:24:44. > :24:51.may well be a role model for Chris O'Hare. He won a bronze medal in a

:24:51. > :24:56.tactical race and that shows you what could happen. Bethwell Birgen

:24:56. > :25:03.is well known to track fans. He does not win many races but can

:25:03. > :25:13.always be dangerous. Good to see British support in the stadium, as

:25:13. > :25:13.

:25:14. > :25:21.ever. Scattered around. Union Jacks always in evidence. Chris O'Hare

:25:21. > :25:31.just needs to hope that somebody at least makes it a reasonable pace.

:25:31. > :25:58.

:25:58. > :26:05.Matthew Centrowitz on the far left the pack. It is not that quick.

:26:05. > :26:14.They're probably aiming for 61, 62. I am delighted to see Chris O'Hare

:26:14. > :26:21.here. A bit disappointed that he is the only representative. When you

:26:21. > :26:26.look back at the glory days, it is a shame he is the only presents. He

:26:26. > :26:36.seems to have a serious approach to the sport. We only have three

:26:36. > :26:36.

:26:36. > :26:44.distance runners in the team. We have an insurance system set up in

:26:44. > :26:49.Britain and they do not seem to be too many men coming through it.

:26:49. > :26:54.There is still a lot more work to be done. We have seen the benefits

:26:54. > :27:00.of giving athletes the chance to go away and train. Chris O'Hare has

:27:01. > :27:06.been a good product of that system. He needs to run a collegiate system.

:27:06. > :27:11.He told me in Barcelona, he would be heading straight back. The

:27:12. > :27:18.cross-country season starts in September. He is doing very well.

:27:18. > :27:25.It has not been that quick. A better second lap. Chris knows the

:27:25. > :27:33.time he needs to do. He is just forcing... Ate little surge would

:27:33. > :27:37.have been enough. I am a little bit more worried. If you go to the

:27:37. > :27:44.front and push on like that, you have to accept the others will take

:27:44. > :27:48.the lead at from you. You need to concentrate. It is his first time

:27:48. > :27:53.in a major championships - Chris O'Hare. When you watch athletes

:27:53. > :27:58.coming through, and to watch them by the first time in the

:27:58. > :28:04.championships, have they got the temperament? Has he got the

:28:04. > :28:14.physical ability and the ability to hold up some of these runners? He

:28:14. > :28:22.is in a bit of an exposed position. They can run a good time. It is

:28:22. > :28:32.working hard and biting hard. He is holding his position. -- for biting

:28:32. > :28:40.

:28:40. > :28:49.hard. He is in a great position. He Matthew Centrowitz is a long way

:28:49. > :28:59.back. Chris O'Hare needs to work hard. It will be a blanket finish.

:28:59. > :29:01.

:29:01. > :29:06.That is going to be quick enough. I am pretty sure of. He will be

:29:06. > :29:12.disappointed. He did a really good job. He is probably now thinking he

:29:12. > :29:21.might have been run out. I think he is going to be quick enough to go

:29:21. > :29:28.through. If he is under three point 40, he will be one of the fastest

:29:28. > :29:37.losers. -- 3.40. His first time in a major championships, prepared

:29:37. > :29:45.mentally and physically. He has some real talent outside a hem.

:29:45. > :29:50.Look, he is challenged. -- him. Mentally he is strong enough.

:29:50. > :29:58.Physically, not quite strong enough. He has never had this level of

:29:58. > :30:04.quality around him. He did not lose it. He hung on. He was in the right

:30:04. > :30:11.place. Now he is tired, he is working. This is what the training

:30:11. > :30:19.is for. These guys are real stars. Fatigue is setting in. The crowd

:30:19. > :30:23.will come through. He has just missed out on 6th place but I think

:30:23. > :30:29.that is good enough for qualification. I hope he knows it.

:30:29. > :30:36.He might be thinking, I have lost it, I have lost it, they are better

:30:36. > :30:45.than me. That was an extremely impressive performance. Looked at

:30:45. > :30:49.him! This is a young man who was so determined. He said he will be

:30:49. > :30:54.disappointed if he does not get a medal but I am delighted we will be

:30:54. > :31:04.able to see him run again in the semi-final. That was a really good

:31:04. > :31:23.

:31:23. > :31:31.congratulations. I thought I would fight from a position and not mess

:31:31. > :31:41.about. I would do something big. Everybody is fresh today. Hopefully

:31:41. > :31:43.

:31:43. > :31:48.I will have a bit more. Were you worried you would not getting to the

:31:49. > :31:54.automatic qualifying? If I am going to be in as the fastest Ludo, it

:31:54. > :32:00.will be because I have worked as hard as hell. -- fastest loser. If I

:32:00. > :32:10.can do that and show my gut and run with heart, I will be fine. You have

:32:10. > :32:15.

:32:15. > :32:25.certainly done that. We will see you advantage. He made sure he went

:32:25. > :32:58.

:32:58. > :33:02.and in terms of qualification times. There will be two semifinals.

:33:02. > :33:06.Aleksandr Menkov now in the long jump. He competed in the Birmingham

:33:06. > :33:13.Diamond League event which he won. And he also competed in London. He

:33:13. > :33:23.won that as well. He has only lost once this year. That is better. He

:33:23. > :33:46.

:33:46. > :33:56.has been a bit below par this champion in the background. The

:33:56. > :34:21.

:34:21. > :34:25.this year. Four times the world the pitch shows what the athletes

:34:25. > :34:35.have to jump. That gives a good indication that it was well below

:34:35. > :34:35.

:34:35. > :35:19.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:35:19. > :35:29.been a very useful jump in recent years, world indoor champion and

:35:29. > :35:43.

:35:43. > :35:50.tremendous vertical lift. That is the second longest we have seen this

:35:50. > :35:55.morning. You can see the two pits lying in

:35:55. > :36:03.parallel there. One behind the other. A good opportunity for us to

:36:03. > :36:10.see every jumper in action. On the long jump runway now is Greg

:36:10. > :36:20.Rutherford. He is in 10th place. Not Tarantino plays in the final. -- not

:36:20. > :36:44.

:36:44. > :36:53.take-off there but I think he was rotating forwards. The balance on

:36:53. > :37:03.the take-off was not quite right. Greg Rutherford may be in a bit of

:37:03. > :37:13.trouble. One and a half rounds to go of athletes trying to do the same as

:37:13. > :37:19.

:37:19. > :37:24.Greg which is to qualify at 8.10 describing the action. 33 years ago

:37:24. > :37:31.he was down in the infield in the Hammer Circle competing for the

:37:31. > :37:37.Moscow Olympics. Here are his memories. It was not a happy Olympic

:37:37. > :37:41.James -- games. My job at the time was as a schoolteacher. The board of

:37:41. > :37:46.governors did not want me to go to Moscow. Margaret Thatcher was in

:37:46. > :37:51.power and there was a lot of anti-feeling about Mrs Thatcher

:37:51. > :37:58.putting pressure on the athletes. One-way to bring home the enormity

:37:58. > :38:03.of the Russian people invading Afghanistan, is to boycott the

:38:04. > :38:08.Olympic Games. Are you still hoping to go to Moscow? That is what I am

:38:08. > :38:16.training for. I had a letter from a gentleman who said he had been in

:38:16. > :38:20.the army but was retired. He threatened to firebomb my house.

:38:20. > :38:26.That was the amount of passionate feelings that there was amongst the

:38:26. > :38:30.British public. Half the population said, you have got to go. The other

:38:30. > :38:39.half said we should not have any involvement with the Moscow Olympic

:38:39. > :38:44.Games. I did not go to the opening ceremony. I do not think any British

:38:44. > :38:50.team members did. It was only the leader of the team, Dick Harmon,

:38:50. > :38:54.proudly carrying the Union Flag. The competition itself was a bit of an

:38:54. > :39:00.anti-climax for all sorts of reasons. I did not make the final,

:39:00. > :39:10.unfortunately. I had been ill before the games started. The first Russian

:39:10. > :39:17.

:39:17. > :39:21.to walk into the Hammer Circle broke the very first throw. That world

:39:21. > :39:26.record was outstanding. It came in the biggest competition of the

:39:26. > :39:31.decade. The Moscow Olympics were absolutely huge. I flew out, I

:39:31. > :39:38.competed and I flew back the next day. I was away for three or four

:39:38. > :39:42.days altogether. It was a massive anti-climax. No regrets. I am glad I

:39:42. > :39:46.went but I cannot really talk with any great perspective about what

:39:46. > :39:52.Moscow was doing, what Russia was doing, in terms of the promotion of

:39:52. > :39:56.the games. The only thing I heard was that no child under the age of

:39:56. > :40:00.16 was allowed anywhere near the Olympic Stadium. They had all been

:40:00. > :40:07.shipped off to some accounts so they would not come into contact with any

:40:07. > :40:11.decadent Westerners. I think if I had had my time over again, I might

:40:11. > :40:16.have considered more seriously about me going to games like that, because

:40:16. > :40:20.after all, what the USSR did was unforgivable. I think history will

:40:20. > :40:25.tell that story in a slightly different way to the story we were

:40:25. > :40:35.being given as young athletes. But I went, I did my thing as best I

:40:35. > :40:35.

:40:35. > :40:40.could, and that was it. But it did have a great effect on some people.

:40:40. > :40:43.Lovely memory there from Paul Dickenson. I am delighted to say,

:40:43. > :40:49.joining me in the studio, the world record holder for the long jump,

:40:49. > :40:59.Mike Powell. Good to see you. to see you, buddy. You are looking

:40:59. > :41:01.

:41:01. > :41:04.trim. What was the regime? Running, 20 kilometres a day, running on the

:41:04. > :41:14.treadmill, eating fruit and vegetables, drinking water, that was

:41:14. > :41:20.the toughest thing. Can you still jump eight metres? If I can jump

:41:20. > :41:28.that, I will be out here. What are you making of the guys at

:41:28. > :41:35.the moment? We got excited about the Spanish jump. 8.25 is good for a

:41:35. > :41:42.qualifying round. If I jump that, I am ready. For me, I looked at the

:41:42. > :41:51.qualifying rounds, simply as that, what is the qualifying distance? One

:41:51. > :41:54.jump and get out, take care of it. Greg has his third jump. He has been

:41:54. > :42:02.struggling with a hamstring injury. He is trying to nurse his body

:42:02. > :42:08.through, isn't he? Having had the Olympics last year, I'm sure his

:42:08. > :42:12.life has changed and team pulled in different directions. Part of life

:42:12. > :42:18.is having to deal with that pressure, that notoriety and he is

:42:18. > :42:25.having to feel it. In terms of quality of the men's long jump, you

:42:26. > :42:31.look back to you and Carl, what do you think it is with the long jump

:42:31. > :42:36.at the moment? I think it may be the expectation. Coming to a competition

:42:36. > :42:46.like, for example, 1991, I was coming to the competition knowing I

:42:46. > :42:46.

:42:46. > :43:34.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:43:34. > :43:43.jumping so far, Caceras, 8.25, then Christian Reif of Germany. Then they

:43:43. > :43:53.are all below eight metres. Aleksandr Menkov is 7.95. That may

:43:53. > :44:05.

:44:05. > :44:09.be an improvement for Greg. Let's something has happened in the

:44:09. > :44:14.previous pool as well. Sophie Hitchon waiting to go in the

:44:14. > :44:18.second qualifying pool in the women's hammer. It is a massive

:44:18. > :44:23.qualifying distance required. The last couple of times she has had to

:44:23. > :44:27.qualify for a major final, she has done it in style. She broke the

:44:27. > :44:37.British record when she qualified for the Olympic final. She has got

:44:37. > :44:37.

:44:37. > :45:30.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:45:30. > :45:40.far better than she was a couple of said it does help. It gives good

:45:40. > :45:48.

:45:48. > :45:58.posture and balance. That is some Hitchon. She will have two more the

:45:58. > :46:15.

:46:15. > :46:25.round? He has been close to Carl Lewis in the past but has never

:46:25. > :46:26.

:46:26. > :46:33.beaten him. He really went for that. That is huge. That is history in

:46:33. > :46:39.the making. A world record by five centimetres. Mike Powell is the new

:46:40. > :46:46.world champion. We are looking, I think, at the new world champion.

:46:46. > :46:56.That is better. The longest jump we have seen today by far. No doubt

:46:56. > :47:04.

:47:04. > :47:11.about who will be the world competition in 1991 was incredible.

:47:11. > :47:18.It was the way bet you and Carl were trading jump for jump. -- that.

:47:18. > :47:24.I knew I would have to jump the world record to beat him. He fouled

:47:24. > :47:28.a jump and in nine metres and I thought, this is going to be a long

:47:28. > :47:36.day. I thought he would jump nine metres after I broke the world

:47:36. > :47:45.record and then I would jump 9. 10. That was the most celebrated world

:47:45. > :47:50.record in the book. What was it like to break it? For me, it was

:47:50. > :47:57.the culmination of my whole life. Everything from being turned dam on

:47:57. > :48:03.dates... That is what everybody. A world record for you. What was Carl

:48:03. > :48:10.Lewis like? He did not like to lose, did he? He was so used to winning

:48:10. > :48:17.and we got so used to losing to him. I did not accept it. I thought it

:48:17. > :48:22.would take time but I would get there one day. I told myself his

:48:23. > :48:29.jump would not win and the next jump was a world record. Let's talk

:48:29. > :48:36.about technique. A lot of the jumpers are over rotating. You had

:48:36. > :48:41.incredible speed but still got massive great leg shoot. I was

:48:41. > :48:46.trying to improve my technique all the time. I wanted to improve my

:48:46. > :48:56.running technique - my speed - and they might take off and flight.

:48:56. > :48:57.

:48:57. > :49:07.Always improving. -- and my take off. The guys are not keeping their

:49:07. > :49:09.

:49:09. > :49:16.centre of gravity high. It is tough for me. What do I know? I'm just a

:49:16. > :49:24.world record holder. What do you make of that competition? We talk

:49:24. > :49:29.about drama and nail-biting stuff. He will win? It was just

:49:29. > :49:38.extraordinary. It really elevated the whole championships. It was

:49:38. > :49:44.rare. I was thrilled. We are going to head back to the long jump.

:49:44. > :49:54.certainly are. Greg Rutherford is hanging on by his fingernails in

:49:54. > :50:00.

:50:00. > :50:10.the long jump qualification. The American collegiate champion is a

:50:10. > :50:12.

:50:12. > :50:17.fine talent. Forbes, that is a good jump. This could mean that Greg

:50:17. > :50:23.Rutherford not only dropped stand another place but may not qualified

:50:23. > :50:28.for the final. He has had all sorts of injury problems. He would be the

:50:28. > :50:35.first person not to excuse himself but he probably knows he has not

:50:35. > :50:40.jumped particularly well here. He is not 100% fit. The Olympic

:50:40. > :50:50.champion, I do not think, will become the world champion. Forbes

:50:50. > :50:57.

:50:57. > :51:04.looks as though he has made it place. One of the last men to jump.

:51:04. > :51:09.He too has gone wrong. Oh, my goodness! This definitely means

:51:09. > :51:15.that Greg Rutherford will finish in 13th place overall out of both

:51:15. > :51:25.pools. Only 12 athletes well qualified for the final. It really

:51:25. > :51:32.

:51:32. > :51:36.aware of what has happened in the last couple of minutes. Again it is

:51:36. > :51:40.long. Greg Rutherford now realises he is not going to contest the

:51:40. > :51:49.World Championship final on Friday. A big disappointment for British

:51:49. > :51:55.fans but a massive disappointment for the Olympic champion. It was

:51:55. > :52:05.not a dramatic Blanc jump qualifying competition. Certainly a

:52:05. > :52:11.

:52:11. > :52:19.on that list. The most important thing for us is that Greg

:52:19. > :52:23.Rutherford is not on that list and he does not go through to the final.

:52:23. > :52:28.Massive disappointment for Greg Rutherford. It is easy to be wise

:52:28. > :52:32.with the benefit of hindsight but he is probably wishing he stayed at

:52:33. > :52:38.home. There were several times in my career I wish I had made that

:52:38. > :52:43.decision. As Olympic champion, you put so much expectation on yourself.

:52:43. > :52:51.If you make the decision to put yourself out there and compete, and

:52:51. > :52:56.not deliver, it hurts. It is painful. He was close. He did not

:52:56. > :53:01.look good and he has missed a lot of work. It is not surprising

:53:01. > :53:07.really. If he had got through qualifying and he had got

:53:07. > :53:10.confidence, maybe he could have picked on. He was in the same

:53:11. > :53:16.situation as Dwight Phillips. With experience, he might have been able

:53:16. > :53:26.to do something. He was not his normal self. As an athlete, I would

:53:26. > :53:27.

:53:27. > :53:34.rather give it a shot and try. a look at this for us! He has over

:53:35. > :53:39.rotated. The speed was not there. He is not 100%. He has had a few

:53:39. > :53:44.injury problems and has almost tried to adjust his technique to

:53:44. > :53:50.avoid one niggle and ended up with something else. That is how it goes.

:53:50. > :53:54.Some athletes have a succession of injuries. It is not even the

:53:54. > :53:58.original one that has been bothering them. It is hard. It is

:53:58. > :54:03.not easy. It is difficult to judge and athletes decisions about

:54:03. > :54:11.whether or not they should be in championships. They need to go with

:54:11. > :54:17.whatever happens. We were talking about 1991. Your memories of 1993

:54:17. > :54:23.instant cut. I remember thinking, I am probably going to win the

:54:23. > :54:30.competition. I am not going to have the shortest jump in competition.

:54:30. > :54:37.That is how I completed. I competed against you when you would triple

:54:37. > :54:46.jumping. I competed in a high jumper. I want all the attention.

:54:46. > :54:50.Notice me! I was at home. I so wanted to be there. Electricity

:54:50. > :54:58.surrounded the championships. You had to stamp your authority on it

:54:58. > :55:05.and say, I am here. Being a champion is great. With Greg

:55:05. > :55:13.Rutherford winning the gold medal at the Olympic Games, I wish I had

:55:13. > :55:20.a gold medal at the Olympic Games are like you guys! You never know

:55:20. > :55:25.where your best year will coincide. Whether it will coincide with an

:55:25. > :55:30.Olympic cycle. Carl Lewis made things a little bit tough.

:55:30. > :55:35.Competing against a living legend was difficult. I accomplished

:55:35. > :55:39.everything I wanted to accomplish except Olympic gold. Daley Thompson

:55:39. > :55:49.told me in 1996, you are not defined by the Olympics, you are

:55:49. > :55:53.defined by the world record. Wise words form him. -- from him. Let's

:55:53. > :55:58.hear from Greg Rutherford. Mike Powell is talking about always

:55:58. > :56:03.wanting to compete. He would have done the same. Was that your mind

:56:03. > :56:10.set? The season had not been going too badly up until Paris when I

:56:10. > :56:17.ruptured one of my hamstrings. I broke all the rules in be covering

:56:17. > :56:23.more quickly than anyone in history. I felt fantastic. I felt confident.

:56:23. > :56:28.This morning, I thought it was going to be a good day. I gave it

:56:28. > :56:33.everything. I had to make a lot of adaptations to make it work. It did

:56:33. > :56:38.not. That is the hard facts. were in a qualifying position for a

:56:38. > :56:44.while. The last couple of jumps pushed you out. When did

:56:44. > :56:53.realisation hit you? I knew it was up going to be long enough. Not

:56:53. > :56:59.particularly competitive. I expected a few guys, some great

:56:59. > :57:03.jumpers, he went after me. It was a bad day. I tried my hardest out

:57:04. > :57:10.there to make it work. Today I could not time it properly and get

:57:10. > :57:16.the distances I wanted. Her how difficult a decision is it, as

:57:16. > :57:23.Olympic champion, you have had a really serious injury and you go,

:57:23. > :57:28.is it worth giving it a go? Initially, I basically said, no

:57:28. > :57:34.chance. When they scans it and looked at it, anyone who has

:57:34. > :57:40.ruptured a muscle, they know it is a serious injury to have. Within

:57:40. > :57:46.two weeks it started to heal. I felt great. I took the decision

:57:46. > :57:53.upon myself. I spoke to UK and they did everything they possibly could

:57:53. > :57:58.to make sure I was fit and healthy. I know how to compete at

:57:58. > :58:07.competitions. I felt better than I was today. I was not good enough

:58:07. > :58:16.and they are the hard facts. Grade certainly fronted up there. You win

:58:16. > :58:23.an Olympic title. -- Greg Rutherford. Being Olympic champion,

:58:23. > :58:30.it kind of trumps everything. You need to give him a shot. He did not

:58:30. > :58:38.do well here but he gave it a shot. You have had those dilemmas. How do

:58:38. > :58:46.you judge it? Am I fit enough to go? People ask me what my biggest

:58:46. > :58:53.regret is. I always think, do not have regrets. My biggest regret was

:58:53. > :58:58.not going to the start line in Paris. I felt great and I was not

:58:58. > :59:03.there. I will never know. If you are there, you know you are not

:59:03. > :59:08.good enough but you gave yourself the chance. Sitting at home and

:59:08. > :59:13.watching is a hard way to find out. It is difficult when it is at the

:59:13. > :59:19.expense of someone else. There is the issue of whether Chris Thomson

:59:19. > :59:29.should have been able to come. qualification for Chris Rutherford

:59:29. > :59:36.

:59:36. > :59:42.-- Greg Rutherford but hopefully Sophie we'll get through. Slightly

:59:42. > :59:47.faster on that occasion. The result is about the same as she threw in

:59:47. > :59:53.the first round. The athletes in that corner of the stadium are

:59:53. > :00:00.still bathed in sunshine. Once again, I feel it will have to rely

:00:01. > :00:09.on a third brilliant throw from Sophie Hitchon. She did it when she

:00:09. > :00:15.won the world junior title. She is in 9th place but only in that pool.

:00:15. > :00:22.There is good news as we have a look at the magnificent building.

:00:22. > :00:32.Good news in the 50km walk. Over 40 kilometres gone in it. Naturally we

:00:32. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:53.Russians were dominating. But there is the leader, Robert Heffernan of

:00:53. > :01:03.Ireland, who finished fourth in the European champions last time. He is

:01:03. > :01:04.

:01:04. > :01:09.leading. Earlier on, it was a procession of Russian athletes in

:01:09. > :01:13.first and second place. It is Robert Heffernan who has taken this race by

:01:13. > :01:19.the scruff of the neck now. Unfortunately for us, we will be off

:01:19. > :01:26.air by the time the walk finishes but you can follow it I am sure on

:01:26. > :01:36.the BBC website. Robert Heffernan of Ireland is leading at the moment.

:01:36. > :01:41.The conditions this morning have been very strange. We started off in

:01:41. > :01:47.glorious conditions. The rain was belting down. Then the sun came out

:01:47. > :01:54.and it gradually got a little more humid. There is the first Russian

:01:54. > :02:00.coming round the top bend. The lead is not a big one but it is

:02:00. > :02:10.definitely Robert Heffernan of Ireland who leads this race walk.

:02:10. > :02:22.

:02:22. > :02:30.Jarrod talent looks as if he is Commonwealth Walker at the moment.

:02:30. > :02:36.He looks like he could be in with a shout of a medal here. But Robert

:02:37. > :02:45.Heffernan, having the race of his life. Jared Talent is a former

:02:45. > :02:53.Olympic wordlist. And certainly has been a major force in road walking

:02:53. > :02:57.over the last decade. Robert Heffernan is in the Emerald Green of

:02:57. > :03:07.Ireland. He leads and he could be heading towards Ireland's first gold

:03:07. > :03:14.

:03:14. > :03:16.all the action across the BBC. This year, the BBC will bring you

:03:16. > :03:26.more ways to enjoy the world athletics championship than ever

:03:26. > :03:27.

:03:27. > :03:37.before. On -- alongside the coverage on BBC One and BBC Two, you can

:03:37. > :03:38.

:03:38. > :03:48.watch on a tablet or mobile. You can download the BBC Four app. You can

:03:48. > :04:00.

:04:00. > :04:04.join Mark Pooja which -- mark Pier gossip and pictures.

:04:04. > :04:08.And you can tweet us. We would love to hear your views. A couple of

:04:08. > :04:15.tweets have come in. We were chatting about selection policy

:04:15. > :04:21.earlier. Ryan Brookdale says first round KO but a PB is not acceptable

:04:21. > :04:27.any more. The Olympics gave us a winning mentality, that should drive

:04:27. > :04:31.future expectations. Tough stuff, Paula. My question would be how

:04:31. > :04:35.would you get to winning unless you go through that? Very few people

:04:35. > :04:38.come in and we'll win at their first Championships. You want to get

:04:38. > :04:43.through the rounds but for a lot of youngsters coming in, their goal is

:04:43. > :04:50.to get to the next round and then to get to the next round and then to

:04:50. > :04:54.win it. Like your experiences? I first started competing in 1985 on

:04:54. > :05:00.the European circuit, I lost every competition. I thought to myself, I

:05:00. > :05:04.am not good enough to do this stuff. I almost gave up. It takes a couple

:05:04. > :05:11.of years to get used to travelling, competing in big competitions when

:05:11. > :05:17.you need to. Then you become a champion. It takes time. One more

:05:17. > :05:22.tweet very quickly. Paula Radcliffe vowels she can go for one last shot

:05:23. > :05:29.at marathon glory. London marathon glory. Not just any marathon, the

:05:29. > :05:33.London Marathon. You are giving me that look. That is not a tweet! That

:05:33. > :05:37.is taken from an article. I said I would love to run one more London

:05:37. > :05:41.and one more New York but I am taking it step-by-step to see what

:05:41. > :05:48.mice that can do. I would love to run ten more but realistically I

:05:48. > :05:53.would like to run one more of each. The trouble of Twitter. Am I the

:05:53. > :05:59.problem? I am getting a hard time here! Let's look back to last

:05:59. > :06:09.night. American victory in the 400m. It was the big head-to-head between

:06:09. > :06:20.

:06:20. > :06:30.Focus, focus, focus. Stay cool. Keep your head. Stride after stride after

:06:30. > :06:32.

:06:32. > :06:38.stride. Kirani James is going to take hold. Believe, always believe.

:06:38. > :06:48.LaShawn Merritt knows what he has to do. Glory awaits. Legend Derry

:06:48. > :07:01.

:07:01. > :07:08.status awaits. It is yours to take. away very quickly. He takes a couple

:07:08. > :07:18.of yards out Santos and Kirani James. Santos will finish quickly.

:07:18. > :07:27.

:07:27. > :07:32.top end. The American is making him have two work hard. Two metres ahead

:07:32. > :07:35.at the moment. Kirani James is a long way back. Look at LaShawn

:07:36. > :07:41.Merritt go! Kirani James is disappearing. It is all about

:07:41. > :07:51.LaShawn Merritt. He will take it. What a performance. He destroyed

:07:51. > :07:56.

:07:56. > :07:59.performance and after we went off air he spoke to Phil Jones.

:07:59. > :08:06.What a performance. An electric atmosphere here because of

:08:06. > :08:14.Isinbayeva. It was not because of me? ! And because of you no doubt!

:08:14. > :08:19.It was great. The atmosphere was great. I fed off it a little bit. I

:08:19. > :08:24.had a great lane going into the final. I was confident. I have been

:08:25. > :08:31.working hard this year to come here and put a great race together. I

:08:31. > :08:34.did. It was billed bypass media types as you against Kirani James

:08:34. > :08:42.for the final but it seemed when you put your foot on the gas there was

:08:42. > :08:46.no response from Kirani James. have said this all through my finals

:08:46. > :08:52.and my prelims, nobody has won the race yet. Eight men were going to

:08:52. > :08:57.line up and we were going to go at it. It was not chosen who was first

:08:57. > :09:01.second or third yet. Eight grown men lined up and we went at it and

:09:01. > :09:06.America got top two. How does it feel being draped in that flag

:09:06. > :09:11.having regained your world title? feels good. Last year I did not get

:09:11. > :09:15.a chance to compete because of an injury. I wanted to come out on the

:09:15. > :09:20.stage and represent my sponsor Rand might country and my family and I

:09:20. > :09:27.did. Congratulations. He has had some

:09:27. > :09:35.tough times. The good thing is they have a rivalry. There is a true

:09:35. > :09:41.rivalry now. Kirani James has been doing so well. LaShawn put the

:09:41. > :09:51.pressure on early. He put the pressure on him and when the race

:09:51. > :09:52.

:09:52. > :09:58.came, James had nothing to do. that point, it was as if Kirani

:09:58. > :10:04.said, I am not going to catch him. He broke him at that point and then

:10:04. > :10:07.everyone else started to come. Kirani is so young. You know he can

:10:07. > :10:17.run faster. This is one time when a learning experience will make him

:10:17. > :10:20.

:10:20. > :10:25.better. It is LaShawn's turn right now. Denise is pulling faces at us.

:10:25. > :10:30.I was just shaking my head. Watching the race last night it did not seem

:10:30. > :10:34.as if Kirani was saying I am not going to run for a medal. I think he

:10:34. > :10:39.blew a gasket trying to chase LaShawn and by the time he came off

:10:39. > :10:46.the town he was still in contention but it had taken so much out of him,

:10:46. > :10:51.that first 200, that he had nothing else to give. He is a 43.9 runner,

:10:51. > :10:56.he should have been able to stick close to that pace. You should.

:10:56. > :11:00.Nobody would have predicted that result at all. But I think

:11:00. > :11:06.psychologically, he had totally blown it. The lactic had set in and

:11:06. > :11:10.there was no way to go from there. Mike, thank you for joining us. It

:11:10. > :11:20.is always at pleasure. We will head back to the hammer to see how Sophie

:11:20. > :11:25.

:11:25. > :11:30.event I ever commented on. Good memories. Both of this woman's

:11:30. > :11:36.parents were Olympic champions in this stadium in 1980 and one of them

:11:36. > :11:42.is still the world record for the men's hammer. That was a beautiful

:11:42. > :11:52.throw, sailing out well beyond the qualifying mark of 73 metres. She's

:11:52. > :11:53.

:11:53. > :12:00.years old. Her mum Lyudmila, the Olympic 100m champion in Moscow in

:12:00. > :12:10.1980. Superb credentials. Superb genes as well. They have obviously

:12:10. > :12:42.

:12:42. > :12:45.Championships in 1996. She has made line. Each one of these throwers who

:12:45. > :12:55.goes further than 69 metres is putting Sophie Hitchon down another

:12:55. > :12:55.

:12:55. > :13:38.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 52 seconds

:13:38. > :13:48.fireworks on the delivery but that is long. 75 metres is the longest we

:13:48. > :14:00.

:14:00. > :14:10.have seen so far by another Chinese of deliveries I have ever seen but

:14:10. > :14:12.

:14:12. > :14:15.pretty useful. She's through to the final.

:14:15. > :14:19.Now Sophie. Just remember when you won the world Junior Championships

:14:19. > :14:29.on your very last throw. Remember when you qualified for the Olympic

:14:29. > :14:37.

:14:37. > :14:45.final with your last throw. This is just over the 65 metre line. Sophie

:14:45. > :14:55.is way below par this morning. I do not know if there is a problem. I

:14:55. > :15:17.

:15:17. > :15:22.Mike Powell may have gone but next to me now is Katarina Johnson-

:15:22. > :15:32.Thompson. We will speak in a second. Vets have a look back at the

:15:32. > :16:12.

:16:12. > :16:22.everybody's expectations. She is going for it. Katarina Johnson-

:16:22. > :16:23.

:16:23. > :16:29.Thompson finishes Beth with a new lifetime there. -- 5th. 6449 points.

:16:29. > :16:35.Is that better than you expected? lot better. The target for the

:16:35. > :16:41.season was to get that little bit more. I did not think at the end of

:16:41. > :16:46.day one I was going to progress that match. I had a Stormer on the

:16:46. > :16:55.second day and I have a personal best. The let's talk about the

:16:55. > :17:05.first event, the 100m hurdles. always really nervous about this. I

:17:05. > :17:05.

:17:05. > :17:11.got left in the blocks. Me and my coach had been practising but my

:17:11. > :17:15.reaction time let me down. It was not that bad. I was only just off a

:17:15. > :17:25.lifetime best but I am always nervous for the hurdles because you

:17:25. > :17:28.

:17:28. > :17:37.only get one Aberu Kebede attempt. -- one attempt. The long jump, I

:17:37. > :17:43.had a huge note jump in my third round, I believe. It is all about

:17:43. > :17:50.buts and maybe is. That is the same for every athlete. If I had done it

:17:50. > :17:56.differently, I might have got a medal. I gave it all in the 800.

:17:56. > :18:04.think you should be incredibly proud of yourself. I have some

:18:04. > :18:14.scissors in my back to cut to a head for the high jump. -- in my

:18:14. > :18:18.

:18:18. > :18:24.bag. It was the head that knocked it off. I was adamant that a did

:18:24. > :18:30.not touch it. I know you had problems in the shot put. To

:18:30. > :18:36.recover like you did, with a storming 200, and then to get a

:18:36. > :18:43.personal best on the second day with the long jump, javelin, 800.

:18:43. > :18:50.You need to hold your head high. You are still in the development

:18:50. > :18:56.phase. It is not easy to leap forward in such big chunks. She is

:18:56. > :19:01.doing that which so bodes well. What we have all said, so much room

:19:01. > :19:06.for development. In the shot put, so much more you can do with

:19:06. > :19:15.conditioning and strength. And technique as well. I am trying to

:19:15. > :19:22.be nice! Where do you see the big games? Obviously, with a shot-put,

:19:22. > :19:28.but overall. I have improved overall. I did not think I would

:19:28. > :19:36.make that much progress, especially when I got injured. I shot put and

:19:36. > :19:41.javelin were not really improving. -- my shot put. With the hurdles as

:19:41. > :19:48.well. Maybe getting some consistency. I needed to get on the

:19:48. > :19:55.board with the long jump. I can clearly see light at the end of the

:19:55. > :20:02.tunnel. My coach said it is a long tunnel. Especially in the shot put.

:20:03. > :20:10.This is the all-time lists for Britain's best pentathletes. You

:20:10. > :20:17.are in 5th place. That is brilliant. I could never have dreamed of doing

:20:17. > :20:24.what you have done at this stage of my career. Your coach is right. It

:20:24. > :20:30.is about progression. You have a consolidation and then there is a

:20:30. > :20:36.plateau and Ben you roll it for it. What is good is your competitor

:20:36. > :20:43.brain. -- then it you roll it forward. You took your chances and

:20:43. > :20:49.you delivered. What I would like to see in the shot put, I want to see

:20:49. > :20:55.warming up and looking like you are there. Not thinking, I am not going

:20:55. > :21:03.to throw well because it is my Week event. What is your attitude like

:21:03. > :21:08.to training? Is it like, I want to get her back and be better? I think

:21:08. > :21:14.I placed 30th and it is very embarrassing. It is weird to think

:21:14. > :21:20.I can still come 5th without placing. My coach and I have worked

:21:20. > :21:25.really hard on both the shot and the javelin. That has been the main

:21:25. > :21:28.aim for the season. We will need to sit down and find a new route but I

:21:28. > :21:38.am very motivated to get better in that. That is the only thing that

:21:38. > :21:39.

:21:39. > :21:49.is holding me back. Just remember, do not beat yourself up. Eunice

:21:49. > :21:55.

:21:55. > :22:05.Barber was terrible and she scored 6.8, 6.9. A word until captain and

:22:05. > :22:05.

:22:05. > :22:10.what she achieved. I got to watch. She gave an amazing team speech in

:22:10. > :22:18.Barcelona. She said never to give up. She clearly did not. I was

:22:18. > :22:28.speaking to the coach and he said every one thousandth of a second

:22:28. > :22:36.

:22:36. > :22:46.counts. I tried my hardest. Denise Ohuruogu will have to try to stay

:22:46. > :22:50.

:22:50. > :22:56.in contact. It is Madeleine non-Jew who comes to the fore. -- Monshu.

:22:56. > :23:02.Will she get there? Christine it is coming. She might just have made it.

:23:02. > :23:08.How are you feeling the morning after the night before? It is

:23:08. > :23:14.really surreal. We have prepared so much for this. Everything has been

:23:14. > :23:22.on point. I had thought about nothing more than the final. Now it

:23:22. > :23:32.has gone. It is with not having it there. The moment you looked up at

:23:32. > :23:32.

:23:32. > :23:38.the screen... I was thinking, Oh my God, oh my God! She is looking, we

:23:38. > :23:44.are looking. She has got it. Another gold medal and Christine

:23:44. > :23:48.Ohuruogu is world champion again. cross the line. Even though I

:23:48. > :23:54.worked really hard I really would love to come first. Please let

:23:54. > :23:59.become first. I did not want to look at the screen. When my name

:23:59. > :24:08.came up, that was the best feeling ever. Christine Ohuruogu is world

:24:08. > :24:13.champion again and is now the British record holder. I could

:24:13. > :24:20.remember what the record was and I thought, I have got it. By the

:24:20. > :24:28.smallest of margins, the scene to do it every time. It was the

:24:28. > :24:34.smallest of margins. -- you seem to do it. I wanted the national record

:24:34. > :24:40.more than anything. I have been working for that every year.

:24:40. > :24:46.inspire people. That seems to be important to you. I always believes

:24:46. > :24:50.that you are blessed to be a blessing to other people. There are

:24:50. > :24:54.young ones coming after me and I want to set the right example and

:24:54. > :24:59.give them something to aim for. I have been successful and able to

:24:59. > :25:04.make things work. These things are not given to us. We have to take

:25:04. > :25:14.what we want. Nothing will be handed over. The last few days will

:25:14. > :25:16.

:25:16. > :25:22.be the hardest I have had in my life. Perseverance works. The one

:25:22. > :25:32.word that comes to your head is perseverance. You have a big heart,

:25:32. > :25:38.

:25:38. > :25:41.Christine Ohuruogu, I am very proud That was a great interview. An

:25:41. > :25:47.inspirational performance from the team captain. What is the other

:25:47. > :25:52.sphere like in the team at the moment? Very positive. Especially

:25:52. > :25:58.after Christine Ohuruogu. Everyone got inspired to go out there and

:25:58. > :26:04.give it their all. After last year and the speech by Christine,

:26:04. > :26:10.everyone is inspired and it cannot wait to get onto the track. Also

:26:10. > :26:20.looking forward to a second gold medal from Mo Farah. Definitely.

:26:20. > :26:29.How is the body? Had he recovered? I am exhausted. -- have you

:26:29. > :26:39.recovered? Tomorrow morning, we are back here in the stadium in the

:26:39. > :27:08.

:27:08. > :27:17.Paul Dickinson. -- let as head out. Here we go. The Irish athlete is in

:27:17. > :27:22.the lead. What do you make of the performance by Robert Heffernan?

:27:22. > :27:27.do not think they have got a medal on the men's side. It would be a

:27:27. > :27:37.great achievement for him if he can keep this up. How long has he got

:27:37. > :27:45.to go - 10 minutes? We will not see the end of it but we can keep up-

:27:45. > :27:51.to-date by it live text. Talking about inspiration from the team,

:27:51. > :27:55.Perri Shakes-Drayton will have drawn a lot of strength from the

:27:55. > :28:01.performance of Christine. It depends on the lane draw. We have a

:28:01. > :28:04.person who is a confident. She has had all her apprenticeships at

:28:04. > :28:14.championships. It is really important and a medal is in sight.

:28:14. > :28:30.

:28:30. > :28:37.event but favourites do not always win. Let's have a look at what is

:28:37. > :28:41.coming up tomorrow morning. In terms of time, we are on BBC Two at
