:01:38. > :01:42.More magical MEP Rhyls hopefully will be created over the next --
:01:43. > :01:48.memories hopefully created over the next few days. We will have the
:01:49. > :01:52.conclusion of the pentathlon shortly. Remember, you can get
:01:53. > :01:58.involved in the chat on social media yourself. There are many ways how.
:01:59. > :02:03.Go to the web, bbc.co.uk/sports. Twitter is an option, #BBCathletics
:02:04. > :02:12.is the key to getting involved there. Many athletes tweeting today.
:02:13. > :02:19.The pen tooth on got under way this morning. -- pen tooth lob got under
:02:20. > :03:13.way this morning. She's done it. She's way ahead of
:03:14. > :03:37.everybody else. There we have it.
:03:38. > :03:46.That's a brilliant throw by Federer. She's in -- by Atlina Fodorova.
:03:47. > :03:57.She's in second place. Lovely throw. 14. 95. That will be enough to go
:03:58. > :04:05.into second in overall standings. This is the leader in the
:04:06. > :04:08.heptathlon, Nadine Broersen going well. That's just over the six-metre
:04:09. > :04:19.mark. Steady acceleration, very upright.
:04:20. > :04:25.That looks better. Fodorova, that's a very good effort, 6. 6.26, she's
:04:26. > :04:32.in second. Here we go. She's got to get this on the board and safe.
:04:33. > :04:49.That is 6. 13, she has a distance on the board. That's important.
:04:50. > :04:57.Nadine Broersen, Fodorova and thigh thigh. -- Theisen Eaton.
:04:58. > :05:01.The biggest disappointment from a British perspective is that Thompson
:05:02. > :05:06.Johnson isn't here. She couldn't get the qualifying because she was ill
:05:07. > :05:10.at the time she needed to do it. She's had to accept it. She couldn't
:05:11. > :05:14.do anything about it. She would have relished the opportunity to compete
:05:15. > :05:19.against some of these girls, here today. It's been an interesting
:05:20. > :05:25.competition. Very close-fought throughout. Katrina would have done
:05:26. > :05:29.the business. She was in shape. We'll see her in the long jump. She
:05:30. > :06:15.will have many more pentathlons to contest. When you looked at the
:06:16. > :06:19.field, did you see it as wide-open? Bort Nadine Broersen, how talented
:06:20. > :06:23.is she? How much potential does she have going forward? If you look at
:06:24. > :06:30.her performance today, the high jump is just phenomenal. She cleared 1.
:06:31. > :06:38.90, that was fantastic. The Dutch have got good athletes coming
:06:39. > :06:43.through. And the Belgians actually, I have to say Broersen was unlucky
:06:44. > :06:47.last time around at the World Championships. She clipped the
:06:48. > :06:52.hurdles and she Shh... Should have made through, but she finished tenth
:06:53. > :07:01.through the championships. We miss seeing our girls out here. Including
:07:02. > :07:09.Jessica Ennis-Hill. She's pregnant at the moment. Not going to be this
:07:10. > :07:19.year. Another big miss for us. Yes, she'll be back I'm sure. It is times
:07:20. > :07:22.that this that you need to see who's coming through and able to put it
:07:23. > :07:27.together. The performances will be a little bit down on what we probably
:07:28. > :07:32.expected, still there's a long season ahead for some of these
:07:33. > :07:36.athletes. Outdoors it's heptathlon, indoors it's pentathlon. Five events
:07:37. > :07:41.in one day. How tough is that? What will they go through? What you look
:07:42. > :07:46.at is the time table. I have to say, this is where the IAAF has the
:07:47. > :07:51.schedule right. It gives the girls enough time to breath. It minimises
:07:52. > :07:54.a lot of the rewarming up. They can move from event to event quite
:07:55. > :07:59.comfortably. It's what you train for. These are some of the fittest
:08:00. > :08:03.girls out there. I just think that pentathlon is such a nice event. It
:08:04. > :08:07.gives you the opportunity to put it all together, see what you've got.
:08:08. > :08:12.But the throws are what usually sorts out a lot of the
:08:13. > :08:16.heptatheletes, the javelin in particular. They don't have that
:08:17. > :08:22.here. It's been good watching them. As for the actual 800, what does
:08:23. > :08:28.your body go through after all the previous exertion? Is it one, final
:08:29. > :08:31.push. You've been there. It's a mental battle. Everyone will have
:08:32. > :08:35.had their pens and papers out. They'll be looking at what they need
:08:36. > :08:39.to do. Some people, it would be pressure on them. They have to run
:08:40. > :08:43.for the medals. Others, it will be just, you know what, I've done what
:08:44. > :08:48.I need to do. I just want to finish on a high note. It's about beating
:08:49. > :08:52.the event. It's such a tough one. Keeping yourself in the right mental
:08:53. > :08:57.frame is what really counts throughout and taking one event at a
:08:58. > :09:02.time. That's where the camaraderie comes from. You're all trying to
:09:03. > :09:05.beat the event together, you have that shared - you know what you're
:09:06. > :09:09.going through, you know how tough it can be, mentally as well. Yeah, it's
:09:10. > :09:14.minimising the events that don't go so well. The most consistent
:09:15. > :09:19.performer, Broersen has been that person so far, can win the race.
:09:20. > :09:24.Sometimes it's not about the big performances, but being consistent
:09:25. > :09:34.throughout, not having a disastrous event. Should point out, Canada's
:09:35. > :09:40.contender, Theisen Eaton, that comes from her husband. Not so bad in the
:09:41. > :09:46.decathlon himself! It's nice having those two. It's the first time we've
:09:47. > :09:50.seen pentathlon and men's heptathlon go off at the same time. It's nice
:09:51. > :09:56.they're giving each other the nod of encouragement. They train together
:09:57. > :10:00.and performing well. She's a really talented athlete in her own right,
:10:01. > :10:05.maybe living in the taddo of him, because he's such a superstar in
:10:06. > :10:09.some respects. She has a chance to take her own medal home. Absolutely.
:10:10. > :10:13.We don't know what colour medal at this time. She has a great 800-metre
:10:14. > :10:17.race. She will give it everything. She will want to make sure that
:10:18. > :10:21.no-one comes past and takes that medal away. She seems to be the
:10:22. > :10:26.bridesmaid. I'm sure she's relishing the opportunity to actually take the
:10:27. > :10:30.Gold Medal. Let's hope it happens for her and the family's sake as
:10:31. > :10:34.well. Thanks for your insight. It's fascinating as always. Let's head
:10:35. > :11:27.out to the pentathlon, 800 metres, see how the medals are decided.
:11:28. > :11:39.Theisen Eaton... Claudia Rath there. Tyminska, alongside Makusha, --
:11:40. > :11:52.Maksimava. Tyminska has perhaps ape bit too much to do. Tyminska has
:11:53. > :11:56.perhaps ape bit too much to do. ?FORCEDWHITE
:11:57. > :12:06.Maksimava has been there or there abouts all day. Broersen has been in
:12:07. > :12:14.the lead ever since the second event, the high jump, 1. 93 she
:12:15. > :12:18.cleared. 14. 59 shot putt and 6. 17 long jump.
:12:19. > :12:27.There's Fodorova, who is currently lying in second place.
:12:28. > :12:35.She's 32 points ahead of Brianne Theisen Eaton. She's just aiming to
:12:36. > :13:28.stay two seconds ahead. Mellor. Broersen of the Netherlands.
:13:29. > :13:36.Tyminska and Maksimava. They are together. Away we go.
:13:37. > :13:48.So the eight athletes under way. We've got four laps to go, Steve,
:13:49. > :13:56.it's going to be interesting to see where Nadine Broersen sits and where
:13:57. > :14:02.Brianne Theisen Eaton, who does go right to the front, where she stays
:14:03. > :14:07.there or not. You've got to be careful. Four laps indoors and she's
:14:08. > :14:10.gone off pretty quick, 29 seconds, that's fast for the first 200
:14:11. > :14:15.metres. There's only one thing we can say - she's going to slow down.
:14:16. > :14:20.With Day-Monroe, you will know more, she was within striking distance of
:14:21. > :14:24.Theisen Eaton in terms of points, if Theisen Eaton gets this horribly
:14:25. > :14:28.wrong. By going out too fast, of course, there is the danger that the
:14:29. > :14:33.wheels fall off completely and you fade away so much in the last 200
:14:34. > :14:36.metres that may happen. You're right, since her Gold Medal, I think
:14:37. > :14:40.she will keep her eye on things at the back. She needs to be a bit
:14:41. > :14:45.careful. The real intriguing battle here is at the front here, for the
:14:46. > :14:51.Canadian. Certainly she's set her stall out and has gone out pretty
:14:52. > :14:57.hard. Yeah she has. I wonder if Nadine Broersen realises just how
:14:58. > :15:08.far ahead she is? Theisen Eaton is well ahead. Just wonder whether she
:15:09. > :15:18.has the opportunity to take a bit of a rain check here? Here we go.
:15:19. > :15:24.There's about four-and-a-half, five seconds at the moment that's quite
:15:25. > :15:29.sufficient in terms of the time laps between Nadine Broersen and this
:15:30. > :15:33.athlete, Brianne Theisen Eaton. Day-Monroe is gritting her teeth
:15:34. > :15:39.there in second place. Claudia Rath in third. But it's not all about
:15:40. > :15:46.those three. It's all about the athlete in second place now, whether
:15:47. > :15:52.she can stay far enough ahead of Theisen Eaton, who just crosses the
:15:53. > :16:10.line now. There is the potential champion. So Nadine Broersen is the
:16:11. > :16:20.champion. Brianne Theisen Eaton is in second place. And Atlina Fodorova
:16:21. > :16:30.has moved down to third. There's the winner of the heptathlon, the final
:16:31. > :16:44.event, this is almost incidental now.
:16:45. > :16:48.Just watch Brianne Theisen Eaton. Sharon Day-Monroe it is woulds going
:16:49. > :16:54.to win. But Brianne Theisen Eaton definitely gets second place. I
:16:55. > :16:59.think it's fast enough to overtake Atlina Fodorova, who is some way out
:17:00. > :17:08.of the picture. She's way, way back, even behind Nadine Broersen. So that
:17:09. > :17:13.is sufficient. It's a shame that the camera keeps going to Sharon
:17:14. > :17:17.Day-Monroe, but nevertheless, she finishes in fourth place in this
:17:18. > :17:35.championship. She'll learn from that, we think. Sharon Day-Monroe,
:17:36. > :17:37.difficult to tell actually whether she's overtaken any of the
:17:38. > :17:42.medallists. We will have to wait and see. I think you called it
:17:43. > :17:48.absolutely right. It's a gold for Netherlands. You can see Broersen
:17:49. > :17:51.celebrating there. Theisen Eaton has moved into Silver Medal. You're
:17:52. > :17:57.right, Fodorova hanging on for the bronze. What is it about the Dutch
:17:58. > :18:04.and multievents? They do very, very well. They certainly do. There's the
:18:05. > :18:10.champion, the multievents champion here from the women's point of view.
:18:11. > :18:15.The men's is yet to be decided. There's still a high jump
:18:16. > :18:26.competition to be settled here this evening. And she's won a medal as
:18:27. > :18:36.well. So Fodorova absolutely delighted.
:18:37. > :18:44.Sharon Day-Monroe miss aid bronze medal by six points. -- missed a
:18:45. > :18:49.bronze medal by six points. She wasn't to know it, but if she had
:18:50. > :18:53.attacked a little bit earlier, she won the race, she was sitting on
:18:54. > :19:00.Theisen Eaton - there's confirmation of the result first of all. Yeah
:19:01. > :19:24.Sharon Day-Monroe the winner. Theisen Eaton has got four silver
:19:25. > :19:51.medals indoors and out. There is the roll of honour.
:19:52. > :20:04.There is the champion, Nadine Broersen, of the Netherlands.
:20:05. > :20:12.Denise Lewis is here to reflect on what we've just seen. You talked
:20:13. > :20:15.about Brianne Theisen Eaton always the bridesmaid, not quite the bride.
:20:16. > :20:20.But she will take satisfaction in the silver. And a potential star
:20:21. > :20:24.born in Nadine Broersen. You know, I had a feeling she would be running
:20:25. > :20:29.for the Silver Medal. She was the better 800 metre runners there. She
:20:30. > :20:32.gave it everything. Personal bets all over the place in that race.
:20:33. > :20:38.Because it means so much to the girls. You put yourself on the line,
:20:39. > :20:43.you don't want to leave without that just reward. Delighted to see
:20:44. > :20:48.Brianne getting a medal there. What can you say about Nadene, it was
:20:49. > :20:52.fantastic personal best from her in the 800. It's not her better event.
:20:53. > :20:57.She gave it everything. It was really good to see. A world leading
:20:58. > :21:00.per formance in terms of points for this season. When they come to a
:21:01. > :21:04.major champion to deliver their best on the day and you never know what
:21:05. > :21:08.is going to happenment Absolutely, this is a building block. These are
:21:09. > :21:12.athletes who are thinking about what the outdoor might bring. It's about
:21:13. > :21:16.making sure you have wintered well, you're strong, showing some early
:21:17. > :21:22.signs of form and you can take it on. Thank you very much. We've got a
:21:23. > :21:25.Gold Medal to be decided in the men's shot putt. There's Polish
:21:26. > :21:32.interest here. The crowd will be very excited to see their double
:21:33. > :21:38.Olympic champion, Tomasz Majewski in the shot final, alongside Ryan
:21:39. > :21:44.Whiting of the USA. Here's Paul.
:21:45. > :21:49.Tomasz Majewski, in London he became the first shot putter to retain an
:21:50. > :21:51.Olympic title. He says he's going to continue right
:21:52. > :22:03.through until 2016. Is that good? Oh, yes! It's not
:22:04. > :22:12.quite what the crowd wanted. But it's up there.
:22:13. > :22:17.It's a very simple technique. Needs to be 21 metres or further though,
:22:18. > :23:52.if he wants to go into the lead. ( Paula Radcliffe has joined me here.
:23:53. > :24:01.We're going to talk 3,000 metres. A couple of British athletes in this
:24:02. > :24:12.in Melleo and a supreme athlete in Lagat. He's trying to do something
:24:13. > :24:17.special here. Yes. When he won the title in 2012, he is aiming to win
:24:18. > :24:21.three in a row and to have won four titles over 3,000 metres at the
:24:22. > :24:25.Indoor Championships. He's 39 years of age now. I don't say he's getting
:24:26. > :24:29.quicker, but he's certainly maintaining his form very well and
:24:30. > :24:39.getting stronger and stronger as he ages. Every year he questions how
:24:40. > :24:43.much longer he can keep his body holding out. Every year he comes
:24:44. > :24:47.back. I know he gets great receptions every time he runs in the
:24:48. > :24:52.indoor meetings here or outdoors in the summer. He's good friends with
:24:53. > :25:02.Mo Farah, we know that. He's a guy you can't help but to warm to as a
:25:03. > :25:05.person as well as an athlete. Lagat loves the sport and keeps his family
:25:06. > :25:10.involved in it. He warms to arenas and crowds that get behind him. He
:25:11. > :25:15.loves racing in Britain. I think that's why he likes racing indoors
:25:16. > :25:21.and he can come and perform so well at the Indoor Championships. We are
:25:22. > :25:38.looking for good performances for Mellor and Vernon.
:25:39. > :25:46.This man won a medal the the Olympics behind Mo Farah. He was
:25:47. > :25:52.outside the medals in this event two years ago. He's capable of getting
:25:53. > :25:56.amongst them here. Parszcynski will get a big cheer from the local
:25:57. > :26:13.crowd. In good form. You can see he's under 7. 50 this year.
:26:14. > :26:20.Galen Rupp, he looks half asleep there. Heats of the men's 3,000
:26:21. > :26:26.metres to go. Final on Sunday. Olympic Silver Medallist at 10,000
:26:27. > :26:29.metres. There's two Olympic Silver Medallists. You add in the likes of
:26:30. > :26:32.Augustine Kiprono Choge and Silver Medallist from these World
:26:33. > :26:34.Championships two years ago behind Lagat, who was in the second heat,
:26:35. > :26:58.shows the talent we have here. 15 laps of the track. Collis
:26:59. > :27:05.Birmingham of Australia, a tall figure in the yellow on the outside.
:27:06. > :27:08.Gelant of South Africa also wearing a similar strip, moving through on
:27:09. > :27:32.the inside to take the lead. It will be interesting to see what
:27:33. > :27:37.tactics these men employ here, given that the second race is full of
:27:38. > :27:41.talent as well. The four fastest loser spots theoretically, you could
:27:42. > :27:47.come in the top eight here, if the others didn't fancy running too
:27:48. > :27:52.faff. I'm not -- too fast. Certainly somebody who was a good proponent of
:27:53. > :27:57.indoor running next to me now. Lord Coe, good to see you here. Good
:27:58. > :28:03.evening. Good evening. Quickly, we'll get through this first lap in
:28:04. > :28:11.63. 800 this morning, that was a bit intense, winner of each heat going
:28:12. > :28:15.through to the final. Andrew ran really well. I will go back on the
:28:16. > :28:19.first point you made. I am not entirely sure that is a format that
:28:20. > :28:23.works. I like the rounds in an eight. I think people coming to the
:28:24. > :28:26.stadium want to see a narrative unfold. That was very harsh on some
:28:27. > :28:31.of those athletes, particularly at this time of the season. Indoor
:28:32. > :28:36.running is a specialist event. I think it prepares you very well for
:28:37. > :28:40.the outdoors. That was quite a harsh set of qualifications. Having said
:28:41. > :28:44.that, I hear that you gave him a little bit of advice before the race
:28:45. > :28:48.and it was good advice, which was stay out of trouble, run with an
:28:49. > :28:58.economy of effort and make sure that you're there when it really matters.
:28:59. > :29:02.David Storl of Germany set this stadium alight. Oh, that's over 21
:29:03. > :29:14.metres. Dips low, drives off the front
:29:15. > :29:21.there. Just needed that foot to stay down a little bit. That was
:29:22. > :29:27.phenomenal. It's the first time anybody has been clear, apart from
:29:28. > :29:34.David himself. 21. 79, my Goodness Gracious Me, that is terrific.
:29:35. > :29:45.Welcome to our salubrious commentary box. This 3,000 metres, you talk
:29:46. > :29:48.about the 800 this morning, all of these events, 1500 is very
:29:49. > :29:55.competitive, 3,000 metres with Bernard Lagat, I know you're a big
:29:56. > :30:00.fan of his. Dejen Gebremeskel in this one. Gebrhiwet in the next one.
:30:01. > :30:04.Tough for the likes of Andrew Vernon. He's trying to make it into
:30:05. > :30:08.the finals. I think it's important that you give where you possibly can
:30:09. > :30:11.in a sensible way. You give people the experience of running at this
:30:12. > :30:15.level. Indoors is a very good way of doing that.
:30:16. > :30:19.Sometimes the lessons are quite harsh. This is quite a specialist
:30:20. > :30:23.discipline. You have to make decisions, very much quicker than
:30:24. > :30:29.you do over a 400 metre outdoor track. It's an obvious thing to say.
:30:30. > :30:33.It's very high-speed chess. You're always thinking about what the exit
:30:34. > :30:37.route is and if somebody comes up alongside you, can you get out
:30:38. > :30:41.quickly. Those decisions you have to make quicker. It's a very good
:30:42. > :30:45.learning curve for young athletes. Used indoors a lot through your
:30:46. > :30:50.career, there weren't as many opportunities perhaps as there are
:30:51. > :30:53.now to race indoors, but it is almost a specialist thing. There are
:30:54. > :30:59.some runners who do excel indoors who don't necessarily do so
:31:00. > :31:04.outdoors. I like outdoors because it kept me mentally sharp during the
:31:05. > :31:10.winter months. Not an athlete that was as tall and rangy as you, it
:31:11. > :31:13.suited me. For a taller athlete it's difficult mastering bends. The
:31:14. > :31:21.sprinters tend to be the stockier type, particularly on, not over 60
:31:22. > :31:24.metres. It was an important conditioner. Occasionally I ran
:31:25. > :31:30.eights. I probably ran over 3,000 metres as much as I did at any
:31:31. > :31:33.distance indoors. That was a very good transitional distance between
:31:34. > :31:41.the winter work and getting out onto the track for the summer months.
:31:42. > :31:45.Kaya leading this. Galen Rupp has been moving through. Maybe not
:31:46. > :31:49.trusting his quick quite so much. The first four go through.
:31:50. > :32:01.Gebremeskel has been happy to sit at the back. This is Ivancevic in the
:32:02. > :32:07.shot putt. -- Ivanov. Starting from eighth
:32:08. > :32:14.place to seventh, that's what Ivanov is. That looks pretty good. That's
:32:15. > :32:29.the 21-metre line. If he's achieved that, he's really kickstarted this
:32:30. > :32:37.competition. That is good. That is a new Bulgarian indoor
:32:38. > :32:43.record. That is absolutely fab lick. -- fabulous. Coming around now with
:32:44. > :32:54.four laps to go, that'sle -- that's 800 metres.
:32:55. > :33:01.Galen Rupp in third place, Andrew Vernon doing well here. Moving up on
:33:02. > :33:05.the outside. Top four only to go through. They've been picking the
:33:06. > :33:10.pace up all along. They know that the second he will have an advantage
:33:11. > :33:15.if they don't take advantage here. Birmingham stretching them out.
:33:16. > :33:20.Galen Rupp looking comfortable. El Goumri is behind Gelant of South
:33:21. > :33:24.Africa. Vernon in sixth place. Kaya, the long-time leader, is behind him.
:33:25. > :33:26.And Gebremeskel, the big danger from Ethiopia moving up for the first
:33:27. > :33:30.time. Birmingham is doing a great job
:33:31. > :33:33.here. Gebremeskel realising that the gaps are beginning to appear. Andrew
:33:34. > :34:24.Vernon has to get his head down and try to finish strongly if he can.
:34:25. > :34:29.Andrew Vernon is trying to get himself into this final, if he can
:34:30. > :34:37.only get past Birmingham. Choge rallies onned comes to the front.
:34:38. > :34:45.Rupp in second. Then Gebremeskel. What a great run by Andrew Vernon.
:34:46. > :34:49.Excellent! That will be a new personal best indoors. It will mean
:34:50. > :34:53.that he ge through to the final and what a good run, because he was
:34:54. > :34:57.disappointed with his performance in Birmingham having run very, very
:34:58. > :35:02.impressively in the trials. Andrew Vernon, there, didn't give it up, as
:35:03. > :35:06.the pace built. He found something extra right at the very end when he
:35:07. > :35:10.needed to. They started to drop off one by one and Collis Birmingham,
:35:11. > :35:12.who did all the hard work to be honest, was the one who suffered
:35:13. > :36:03.most. He's come here and run a personal
:36:04. > :36:10.best. Tomasz Majewski now finds himself in fourth place. He needs
:36:11. > :36:20.something over the 21-metre line. Is that good? Oh, yes! This is
:36:21. > :36:26.turning out to be a smashing competition.
:36:27. > :36:36.Shifts, reaches out towards the front, just managed to stay in.
:36:37. > :36:38.Bingo. That's well over 21 metres. Perhaps not as far as I thought, but
:36:39. > :36:49.he's in third place. Ryan Whiting now, still only good
:36:50. > :37:10.enough for second place. Oh, my goodness! That's absolutely
:37:11. > :37:15.massive. That was phenomenal.
:37:16. > :37:23.That was something approaching 22 metres or there abouts.
:37:24. > :37:27.This could be one of the great competitions. David Storl is still
:37:28. > :37:32.in it. He will be fighting. How far is this? 22. 05.
:37:33. > :37:43.Everybody is saying congratulations Ryan Whiting.
:37:44. > :38:02.Steve, I'm sure that all sounds like fantastic news all around, because
:38:03. > :38:06.it's personal best, you're in the World Championship final, Steve
:38:07. > :38:10.saying, you took great scalps as well. Unfortunately, one of the
:38:11. > :38:14.scalps I took was my training partner Collis Birmingham. I was
:38:15. > :38:18.spoking -- speaking to my coach last night saying that the worst case
:38:19. > :38:23.scenario it's me and him battling it out for the last spot. I think he
:38:24. > :38:29.was fifth or he might have got done bit South African in sixth. I
:38:30. > :38:32.overtook him on the last bend. I came here to make the final and
:38:33. > :38:35.that's what I've done. Job done so far. Tell me about the frame of mind
:38:36. > :38:39.when you're on the start line, what was the game plan? Did you execute
:38:40. > :38:45.it the way you wanted to? Yeah well, I did a bit of research on YouTube.
:38:46. > :38:48.I just went back the last two years of how the heats and final went.
:38:49. > :38:53.They all play out exactly the same way. It's quite relaxed for the
:38:54. > :38:57.first ten laps and just wind up, wind up for the last K, it's how it
:38:58. > :39:02.went again today as well. There weren't any surprises really. I
:39:03. > :39:05.wasn't sure whether to take it out faster having the four fastest
:39:06. > :39:09.losers go through. That makes eight people in one heat could go through
:39:10. > :39:13.and you only have to beat two people. My coach decided against it
:39:14. > :39:18.and he said you know you're strong enough to kick with the guys. You
:39:19. > :39:20.did that. You've done it by right. You're in the final. Enjoy the
:39:21. > :39:21.experience. Well done. Thank you very much.
:39:22. > :39:33.Back to Steve. Very well done indeed. One of the
:39:34. > :39:37.options was to take it out, the pace was good. That was the point, it was
:39:38. > :39:40.a good, decent pace. Collis Birmingham picked it up. He was one
:39:41. > :39:50.of the ones that lost out. It would be interesting to see what happens
:39:51. > :40:03.here. Another British athlete, Johnny Mellor here. He beat Collis
:40:04. > :40:08.Birmingham in Birmingham. That was a very well executed race.
:40:09. > :40:13.Let's hope Mellor can do something similar to Vernon. Anything this
:40:14. > :40:19.might be harder. He has Bernard Lagat, the defending champion going
:40:20. > :40:24.for his third in a row and fourth in total world indoor title. You have
:40:25. > :40:28.Gebrhiwet, this talented 19-year-old from Ethiopia. Silver Medal at the
:40:29. > :40:32.World Championships last year. Then you have Caleb Mwangangi Ndiku, who
:40:33. > :40:40.is the best hope that perhaps Kenya have got. He's at the back. He's
:40:41. > :40:45.wearing a hat. Excuse me? Ndiku, great 1500 metre runner. Great
:40:46. > :40:50.talent he is. Then one or two others in there who can run fast times as
:40:51. > :41:16.well, including Nigel Levine of Canada, who is happy to sit in
:41:17. > :41:23.They're training permanently at altitude. He's racing pretty well so
:41:24. > :41:27.far this year. He's been just over to Puerto Rico to race the world 10
:41:28. > :41:31.k there. Reasonable result. He's watched the first heat and is
:41:32. > :41:34.pushing this second heat on at a decent pace and making sure that
:41:35. > :41:38.they have a fair chance of getting close to that, although it's not
:41:39. > :41:40.going to be easy. It wasn't like they were jogging around in the
:41:41. > :41:49.first heat. They will have to work. It will probably need a bit of
:41:50. > :41:53.assistance from other guys out here. He has no race, or indoor racing
:41:54. > :41:57.this year to fall back on. He ran a good year last year, 13. 13 for
:41:58. > :42:01.5,000 metres. That was a personal best. He'll be hoping that somebody
:42:02. > :42:05.will help him out here. He looked over his shoulder there. No sign of
:42:06. > :42:32.anybody coming through. One name I didn't mention is Ibrahimov. He was
:42:33. > :42:36.just tucked in there. 745, there are thereabouts, they will have to run
:42:37. > :42:45.if they want to get into the top four. Given the talent that is on
:42:46. > :42:54.display the strength and depth of the Men's 800, this again is an
:42:55. > :43:03.event full of some of the best names running in the world. One name that
:43:04. > :43:08.has been there for a long time is that of... Who never ceases to come
:43:09. > :43:14.back freshly charged each year and attacks each year as it comes. He
:43:15. > :43:24.keeps close to the times he has been running for all of this century. He
:43:25. > :43:29.is content to follow the pace, because he does have that killer
:43:30. > :43:36.finish that he can release. He can run this race smoothly. That is like
:43:37. > :43:44.when you forget to take your accreditation off, he has decided to
:43:45. > :43:52.come in and race. How can you forget to take your hat off? People do it.
:43:53. > :43:58.You get nervous before you go out on the track. I have enjoyed watching
:43:59. > :44:03.him. We have talked about lots of Kenyans coming through, he is
:44:04. > :44:14.running against a great runner who is a joy to watch. Where he ran his
:44:15. > :44:20.327, Mo Farah took the record, he pushed Mo Farah on that lap. He ran
:44:21. > :44:26.well in Monaco. He is a big talent. You talk about the 3000 metres, this
:44:27. > :44:35.could be a good event for him. When you get to championships, he must be
:44:36. > :44:40.a danger. At 39, he still has some speed in his legs. He could hold off
:44:41. > :44:48.the likes of some of these guys in a sprint finish. When you are younger,
:44:49. > :44:54.and you are straddling that threshold between the 1500 metres
:44:55. > :45:00.and the 5000 metres, the 3000 metres can be the perfect distance. You
:45:01. > :45:05.might not have the stamina to really hit the 5000 metres, but the
:45:06. > :45:12.potential could come later. For heaven, this is probably the perfect
:45:13. > :45:18.distance. Johnny Miller trying to hold onto the pace, he might not be
:45:19. > :45:24.too far off a personal best. Other great run. Some of these guys run
:45:25. > :45:31.well in Birmingham. He is towards the back of the group. He is finding
:45:32. > :45:39.this pace heart. He must have looked, goodness me, but he is at
:45:40. > :45:48.the back trying to hold on. They are well spaced out. He could well be
:45:49. > :46:10.rewarded with a personal best. Again, Robertson moves to the front,
:46:11. > :46:23.helped out by Ibrahim North. -- -- Ibramhinov. We had not mentioned
:46:24. > :46:29.Adams. He trains in Portland. He ran a quick time then. He probably does
:46:30. > :46:33.not quite have the speed to finish over the closing stages that Mo
:46:34. > :46:41.Farah would have. He is strong and getting stronger year-on-year. Now,
:46:42. > :46:46.between six men, Robertson doing his best, but they are drifting away
:46:47. > :47:02.from the time they went out, you would expect them to pick it up over
:47:03. > :47:08.the last 600 metres. Ndoku moves in. Ibramhinov is still there. He is
:47:09. > :47:13.trying to hang onto this, trying to produce some sort of finish, trying
:47:14. > :47:17.to get into the top four, you would expect the four big names to make it
:47:18. > :47:27.through, can Robertson do anything to up set them, Ndoku the
:47:28. > :47:34.specialist. He has done this so many times. He goes past Robertson as
:47:35. > :47:45.Ibramhinov takes a little stumble. The four are moving away now. Look
:47:46. > :47:56.at them go. These four will be clear. Ndoku there. Ibramhinov is
:47:57. > :48:03.there. I think the two of them will go through. They did enough to get
:48:04. > :48:09.them closer to the 7.45 mark. Robertson is looking up at the
:48:10. > :48:19.screen. The last one to cross will be Johnny Miller. Did we learn
:48:20. > :48:28.anything, we learned that Ndoku can kick. He forgot to take his hat off
:48:29. > :48:35.or it was deliberate. He put a little bit of pace on a Ndiku
:48:36. > :48:42.responded. He is wise and mature enough. He knows he does not need to
:48:43. > :48:46.win this, he does not need to get into as scrappy match. It looked as
:48:47. > :48:56.though he had plenty to come around him. We go back to the shot put.
:48:57. > :49:04.This is Tom Walsh, he has been getting better since 2012. He has
:49:05. > :49:14.had a succession of fouls. A chance for the New Zealander. He has not
:49:15. > :49:20.particularly big. In relative turns. -- he is not. Here we go, Tomas
:49:21. > :49:29.Walsh, getting ready. He is a rotator. Anything can happen. Oh my
:49:30. > :49:36.goodness! That is the nominal. Well over 20 metres! Over 21 metres --
:49:37. > :49:48.phenomenal. He has got really fast feet. 21 metres plus. That is going
:49:49. > :49:58.to put the cat amongst the pigeons. 21.26. I knew Australian...
:49:59. > :50:11.Australasian, Continental records. That means that this man is in
:50:12. > :50:25.second place -- Madjewski. He has got this turns. Last throw, here we
:50:26. > :50:28.go. He is going to get it. It has got to go above 21, it was not
:50:29. > :50:53.anti-finishes outside the medals. This man, he has been fantastic over
:50:54. > :51:08.the years, but he is in fourth place. That is confirmed.
:51:09. > :51:24.So here comes the bulk area. He has already got a medal, can he make it
:51:25. > :51:42.a better one. -- the ball Gerrie on. He cannot. -- Bulgarian. He is in
:51:43. > :51:56.fifth place. That is quite some performance. He must have thought he
:51:57. > :52:12.would be in third place. He must have thought he got something very
:52:13. > :52:13.special. Here is Whiting. Can tempt one produce something even more
:52:14. > :52:39.remarkable. -- Michael Whiting. Not quite as far as it was last
:52:40. > :52:45.time. David won the title with his last throw in the last championships
:52:46. > :53:07.and Ryan Whiting was leading at the time. Here we go. It is all or
:53:08. > :53:15.nothing here we go, it is David Storl. He is really up for this. Can
:53:16. > :53:29.he win his second world title? Oh my goodness! He cannot, but it was a
:53:30. > :53:45.good effort. He was very fast to cross the circle. He knows what it
:53:46. > :53:53.is like to lose one. 21.19. That is good enough, just for second place.
:53:54. > :54:03.What a performance by Ryan Whiting. The last time, it was David Storl.
:54:04. > :54:10.He got it and Ryan Whiting was in second, this time it is the other
:54:11. > :54:17.way around. What a performance. There we have it, David Storl in
:54:18. > :54:24.second place, Ryan Whiting in first. Absolutely excellent. Ryan Whiting,
:54:25. > :55:00.22.05. Well, this silver medal went to
:55:01. > :55:16.David Storl and there is a very lucky man. Absolute favourite. Tom
:55:17. > :55:24.Walsh of New Zealand. He too climbs the 21 metre mark and gets out of
:55:25. > :55:48.the shadow of the great Jack O Gill. Well done to him. -- Jack O'Gill. It
:55:49. > :56:01.has been good for New Zealand. Here are the results. Look at that, new
:56:02. > :56:11.record for Robertson and the Canadian goes through. Johnny Miller
:56:12. > :56:26.finished in 10th position. These are the men who have made it through to
:56:27. > :56:39.the final and what a list of names. Andrew Vernon will be joining them
:56:40. > :56:47.and he will be delighted. We are going on to the semi-finals of the
:56:48. > :56:56.Women's 400 metres. That is still held by the great runner from the
:56:57. > :57:02.Czech Republic. 49.59 seconds. The athletes are out on the track and
:57:03. > :57:11.there we have the line-up, Patricia Hall represents Jamaica, Joanna
:57:12. > :57:26.Atkins for the USA. Ridge added George from Nigeria does not start
:57:27. > :57:38.-- Regina. Patricia Hall, a very talented athlete. Joanna Atkins from
:57:39. > :57:59.the USA. A former US collegiate champion. 50.39, she has run. Here
:58:00. > :58:12.is the Dutch runner she was second in the Dutch nationals. There is
:58:13. > :58:22.Swiety. She is the Polish indoor champion. She gets a big cheer from
:58:23. > :58:48.the crowd. She was second in the European Junior Championships. She
:58:49. > :58:59.is 21 now. No Regina George, so on to Denise Rosolova. Justyna Swiety
:59:00. > :59:16.is the crowd favourite. And she is also the Polish favourite. We are
:59:17. > :59:33.down to five all together. They will break for the inside after the
:59:34. > :59:46.second bend. The Championship record still held from 2006. Away we go.
:59:47. > :59:55.Very much the marks laid down by Atkins. Being chased by Regina
:59:56. > :00:06.George. Storming around the inside. Patricia Hall and Joanna Atkins and
:00:07. > :00:12.Rosolova is following. Which one of these three is going to make the
:00:13. > :00:22.mark now? Atkins is really busting a gut trying to get this one. Patricia
:00:23. > :00:27.Hall will not let her past. Rosolova's gone! Swiety comes
:00:28. > :00:33.through. Patricia Hall and Swiety. That was a
:00:34. > :00:38.turn up for the books. There might be an inquiry into that
:00:39. > :00:45.one. We might have a look. You know, as
:00:46. > :00:49.you were commentating on that race, I was trying to see what was going
:00:50. > :00:54.on in the background. Athletes all of a sudden came alive with the last
:00:55. > :00:56.150 metres. They realised they had a chance of qualifying. They all had a
:00:57. > :01:02.surge around the bend, which caused a lot of really traffic, congestion,
:01:03. > :01:07.all the athletes start to close in here. They realise there's gaps
:01:08. > :01:11.appearing, people not moving as fast as they thought they would.
:01:12. > :01:18.Unfortunately, someone goes down, just off this bend. Rosolova hits
:01:19. > :01:23.the floor and is left really in a bad state. Number ripped off. She's
:01:24. > :01:26.limping and walking away to the finishing line. She's bitterly
:01:27. > :01:30.disappointed. Look at the Polish athlete celebrating, no way did she
:01:31. > :01:35.think she was going to do it, Swiety. But she's in the final. When
:01:36. > :01:39.accidents happen, there's a bit of inquiry that will go on and people
:01:40. > :01:43.will be talking, so it may take a bit of time before the result
:01:44. > :01:56.reaches us. So far so good for Jamaica.
:01:57. > :01:59.There is Rosolova. She really came down a hefty thump there. We'll have
:02:00. > :02:16.to see what happens. An eventful first semifinal. The
:02:17. > :02:21.second is coming up. There's British interest in that. Margaret Adeoye
:02:22. > :02:23.has got through as a fast eloser -- loser, but a season's best in
:02:24. > :02:25.getting to this position. loser, but a season's best in
:02:26. > :02:29.getting to this She ran well this morning. Just had one of those heats
:02:30. > :02:33.where it's just loaded, you know, she had to run really well. I was
:02:34. > :02:39.pleased that she actually made it through to the semifinals. She is
:02:40. > :02:43.really going to have to produce something special here. I'm
:02:44. > :02:48.delighted. She's still someone I feel that's learning how to run the
:02:49. > :02:55.400 metres. She's come from a speed, 200-metre background and you know,
:02:56. > :03:00.indoors is not easy. It's a season's best time. She has to deliver
:03:01. > :03:04.another one. You know find something more magical. She's ended up in a
:03:05. > :03:09.really sufficient semi as well. Yes -- really tough semi as well. Yes,
:03:10. > :03:14.she has. Francena McCorory is in there. She has to just pot pay these
:03:15. > :03:19.ladies too much respect. She has to run her own race, but be positive
:03:20. > :03:23.and especially at that bell, where there's going to be a lot of pushing
:03:24. > :03:27.and shoving. She's got to make sure she keeps out of dangerer, but
:03:28. > :03:33.really attacking -- danger, but really attack being. Your
:03:34. > :03:37.experience, making that transition from sprinter, 200 metres, maybe 100
:03:38. > :03:41.metres, up to 400, is that something that takes years? Is it something
:03:42. > :03:47.that can happen imaginically because you're a gifted Bolt-type figure?
:03:48. > :03:53.Nothing happens imaginically with the 400 metres. It's pain all the
:03:54. > :03:57.way -- magically, with the 400 metres. It's pain all the way. You
:03:58. > :04:00.have to put in the sessions to lay the foundations to make sure that
:04:01. > :04:03.you understand where you attack. You understand the strength of your
:04:04. > :04:11.race. And sho is still learning that. She is still learning that.
:04:12. > :04:16.She's part a great squad. She has to attack it and go for it. Let's hope
:04:17. > :04:20.she can perform tonight. Here's Steve Cram.
:04:21. > :04:25.Thank you, Phil. I think she's got a real tough job here.
:04:26. > :04:30.She is still learning this event. This is a steep learning curve for
:04:31. > :04:34.her here. This is by far the toughest of the two semis. Given
:04:35. > :04:38.that there was only five athletes lined up for the first one, she will
:04:39. > :04:43.wish she was in that one. As it is, she has to attack this as best she
:04:44. > :04:50.can. Esther Cremer is on the inside. Adeoye is in lane two. Patricia Hall
:04:51. > :04:53.won that from lane one. So lane draw not as important. Being on the
:04:54. > :04:58.inside with the type of athlete she has outside her, she will have a
:04:59. > :05:02.decision to make whether just to sit off here. She has good 200 metre
:05:03. > :05:10.pace. Francena McCorory is outside her in lane three. US indoor
:05:11. > :05:15.champion, very slow off the mark this morning. But once she was into
:05:16. > :05:21.her running looked pretty good. Outside her will be the Russian
:05:22. > :05:23.champion, Kseniya Ryzhova who wasn't as impressive as we might have
:05:24. > :05:39.thought. She did make it through. Kaliese Spencer, the 400-metre
:05:40. > :05:49.hurdler looked pretty good. Fourth in the Olympics in the hurdle
:05:50. > :05:54.eventment You can see there pretty impressive with a personal best of
:05:55. > :05:59.52. 14. Patricia Hall won the first semi in 52. 2.le, well some of these
:06:00. > :06:04.athletes might have thought they were in that one, including Margaret
:06:05. > :06:09.Adeoye. She's also got this young lady, Shaunae Miller, 19-year-old of
:06:10. > :06:16.age. What I real talent she is. I think my only question mark was how
:06:17. > :06:20.tired are these athletes? They had to run this morning, come back here
:06:21. > :06:24.for tonight's semifinal. I think that first semi they looked a little
:06:25. > :06:28.tired. They should all be prepared, though. They're 400 metre runners.
:06:29. > :06:31.They should be used to it. They've had a long break in relative terms.
:06:32. > :06:38.The experience is what's going to be important. This one is all about
:06:39. > :06:42.speed, unfortunately. Speed on the first lap, who's going to get to the
:06:43. > :06:45.front here and try to control this? There are just three spots
:06:46. > :06:49.available. No fasters losers. It's the first three through to the
:06:50. > :06:53.final. Miller on the outside, then Spencer
:06:54. > :07:04.coming in towards us. Ryzhova, McCorory, Adeoye and Cremer.
:07:05. > :07:11.Margaret Adeoye is very strong out of the blocks. There's a good start
:07:12. > :07:15.running down McCorory, who doesn't always start the quickest. Ryzhova
:07:16. > :07:21.started very fast, as indeed has Miller, who has good 200-metre pace.
:07:22. > :07:25.Margaret Adeoye really has got herself involved in this, which is
:07:26. > :07:28.good. The one suffering is Kaliese Spencer at the minute. A long way
:07:29. > :07:32.off this. The Russian attacks and gets to the front first. Miller in
:07:33. > :07:35.second behind her. Then McCorory just sneaks through on the inside.
:07:36. > :07:40.Leaves a gap there. Margaret Adeoye in fourth at the moment. Here comes
:07:41. > :07:44.Kaliese Spencer. She's trying to make up the gap. Shaunae Miller is
:07:45. > :07:48.so wide she's going to let Spencer come through on the inside for third
:07:49. > :07:51.spot. Only the top three to go through. Ryzhova much better from
:07:52. > :08:01.the Russian, McCorory finishing well. So is Kaliese Spencer. That
:08:02. > :08:05.was so close, Kaliese Spencer slows through the first 200, finished
:08:06. > :08:11.quicker than anybody else. McCorory did well. Goodness me what on earth
:08:12. > :08:16.was young Miller doing? She ran so wide, especially all the way around
:08:17. > :08:22.the last lap. She ran most of it in lane two. First let McCorory
:08:23. > :08:25.through, then she let Spencer through. She's halfway up the bend.
:08:26. > :08:29.There It's a crazy, crazy tactic that she played there. Remember when
:08:30. > :08:32.I said earlier when we were talking about the race is not experience,
:08:33. > :08:37.this one, it's going to be about speed. You can see the young athlete
:08:38. > :08:41.there, well, she certainly lacked experience and that could have cost
:08:42. > :08:47.her her place into the final. If she's missed out, she would be ruing
:08:48. > :08:52.that decision. She went so wide and letting Kaliese Spencer sneak in on
:08:53. > :08:56.the inside. The race was very quick, though. Certainly all four athletes
:08:57. > :09:00.in the top four would have won the first semifinal comfortably. So you
:09:01. > :09:04.can imagine how frustrated they will be. It was a good race, a good solid
:09:05. > :09:09.competition, exactly what we expected. These athletes are lying
:09:10. > :09:14.on the floor. They are exhausted. Well, they are examining the finish,
:09:15. > :09:18.photo finish. McCorory has been given first. Kaliese Spencer has
:09:19. > :09:23.been given second. But they are looking at the photo finish. We have
:09:24. > :09:30.no results yet. It looked as though the Russian hung on. Miller was
:09:31. > :09:33.finish being the quickest. But I think the Russian just hung on. If
:09:34. > :09:38.Miller doesn't get through, she will be looking back o on -- on the tape
:09:39. > :09:41.of that and will have learned a big lesson, the young 19-year-old from
:09:42. > :09:43.Bahamas. At the moment we're waiting for
:09:44. > :09:46.that. I'm not sure we will get it in time.
:09:47. > :10:02.Personal best for Kaliese Spencer. Now the heats of the men's 60 metres
:10:03. > :10:05.took place earlier this evening. James Dassal, the fastest man in the
:10:06. > :10:08.world this year was out injured. We had two representatives in Dwain
:10:09. > :10:29.Chambers and Richard Kilty. It will be Kilty finishing
:10:30. > :10:34.brilliantly. A hand in the air from the Iranian athlete. What a good
:10:35. > :10:38.finish. Look at him prancing, he looks like a little bit of a caged
:10:39. > :10:41.animal. He wants to get out there, show everybody what sort of shape
:10:42. > :10:45.he's in. It wasn't a brilliant start but goodness me, the last 20 metres,
:10:46. > :10:50.he stormed through. I think Carter did ease back a little. But
:10:51. > :10:54.nonetheless, very impressive. That equals his personal best. He's
:10:55. > :10:57.through to the semifinal. If there was ever a doubt whether this man
:10:58. > :11:00.should have come to these championships, he has just confirmed
:11:01. > :11:05.his position there. Look at that, out of the blocks, well, he
:11:06. > :11:08.approached it, like it was a final. There's important. No doubt he
:11:09. > :11:13.warmed up very well, got himself into a good state, aggressive, nice
:11:14. > :11:16.and controlled. There's no real tension in his shoulders. He's
:11:17. > :11:20.pumping his arms. Even the opportunity to give one of the
:11:21. > :11:29.fastest sprinters of all time Carter a bit of a glance and say, I've got
:11:30. > :11:39.that victory. Chambers gets a good start.
:11:40. > :11:48.It's chambers from Harris. Then it was tight after that for the third
:11:49. > :11:52.spot. A decent start and then maintained really nicely through the
:11:53. > :11:55.last 20 metres or so. Certainly Harris improved through
:11:56. > :12:05.that race. But very, very close, three of them.
:12:06. > :12:18.So job done. That's the main thing. It's a good performance by Dwayne.
:12:19. > :12:21.He executed the race exactly as he would like to, as a heat. 6. 57,
:12:22. > :12:45.rewarded with a swift time as well. Well done to Richard and Dwain.
:12:46. > :12:50.We'll see them in final action tomorrow. Earlier we saw Margaret
:12:51. > :12:56.Adeoye not quite make the 400 metres final. She's talking to us now.
:12:57. > :12:59.Fifth place, semifinal of the world Indoor Championships, season's best
:13:00. > :13:03.this morning. We're waiting for your time. What are your thoughts? It's
:13:04. > :13:06.mixed emotions. Because firstly, I was happy to make the individual
:13:07. > :13:10.because it's such a progression from last year, where I came here as the
:13:11. > :13:13.fifth relay runner and didn't get to run. So I just remember telling
:13:14. > :13:17.myself last year, I'm not coming here as the fifth person any more.
:13:18. > :13:20.To make the individual alone, I was happy with. Once I got here, I
:13:21. > :13:24.thought you know, what I don't want to just participate, I want to
:13:25. > :13:27.compete. I think I've done that. I'm pleased with how the weekend has
:13:28. > :13:31.gone so far. You've just pointed down on my notes and seen the times
:13:32. > :13:36.of the first semifinal, where we saw George did not start. Already they
:13:37. > :13:41.were one down. You saw the times. I know that you must be thinking now
:13:42. > :13:45."what if? " As soon as we came up and saw to the start line, I was
:13:46. > :13:49.like, why don't I ever get it easy, you know? I've worked out that
:13:50. > :13:53.nothing ever really comes easy. I had to go through the tough heat
:13:54. > :13:58.today and hopefully I will be ready by summer to be racing these girls
:13:59. > :14:02.again. You get another chance and you'll be back with the relay team
:14:03. > :14:07.in the morning, reigning champions, you missed out getting a run two
:14:08. > :14:11.years ago, sorry last year, what are the thoughts and I'm sure you're
:14:12. > :14:15.hoping for a place in that quartet. Yeah, I'm getting comfortable and
:14:16. > :14:20.confident in this. I came here this morning not knowing what to expect,
:14:21. > :14:24.then when we got here in the semi, I thought I didn't get the nerves, oh,
:14:25. > :14:28.yeah go through the same routine, kind of how I feel when I ran the
:14:29. > :14:32.two. When I started running, it didn't feel as nervewracking as
:14:33. > :14:36.normal. I'm excited about the next two days. Hopefully I get a run. He
:14:37. > :14:45.might want fresh legs, we'll' see. Best of luck. Well done here. World
:14:46. > :14:54.indoor semifinalist. Congratulations. Thank you so much.
:14:55. > :15:00.Thank you. Well, another British athlete hoping
:15:01. > :15:07.to perform as well as he can here, Nigel Levine.
:15:08. > :15:13.Just to tidy it up, Miller has been given the nod by 1010th of a second,
:15:14. > :15:19.taken about five or six minutes for them to exam examine the finish. --
:15:20. > :15:27.100th of a second. So Miller does go through.
:15:28. > :15:38.Maslak, very impressive from the Czech Republic.
:15:39. > :15:44.Steele from Jamaica, 27 with a new personal best this year. Winner at
:15:45. > :15:52.the Birmingham Games after the Birmingham Grand Prix.
:15:53. > :15:58.And then, America represented by Clemons here, 23 years of age,
:15:59. > :16:04.having a cracking indoor season. He broke his time down to 45.60. Not
:16:05. > :16:11.all of the Americans have performed well. Somebody who's carried on his
:16:12. > :16:19.indoor season looked pretty good this morning, Lalonde Gordon, the
:16:20. > :16:31.man who tops the world list of those other two who aren't here from
:16:32. > :16:40.Trinidad and Tobago. Top three, no fastest losers.
:16:41. > :16:51.Levine will be hoping he can get to his best at least.
:16:52. > :16:57.Gordon right on the outside perhaps the favourite. But watch for Maslak
:16:58. > :17:06.in three, he looked pretty good also.
:17:07. > :17:14.Safely away first time. Gordon has started quickly. So has Maslak. Le
:17:15. > :17:20.vine trying to get himself involved. It's going to be tough. Very, very
:17:21. > :17:29.fast indeed. It's Maslak who started the quickest. Gordon has been left a
:17:30. > :17:35.bit on the bend. Estonia in second. Gordon at the back with the
:17:36. > :17:39.American, Clemons as well. Levine looking for room. Gordon trying to
:17:40. > :17:43.attack on the bend. Pushing and shoving going on. Steele trying to
:17:44. > :17:50.make history and the Americans trying too. There's no room there.
:17:51. > :17:55.Maslak storming away. Steele will have second spot, the American
:17:56. > :18:03.third. Clemons ahead of Gordon. What a terrible race the tall man from
:18:04. > :18:08.Trinidad and Tobago done. One man only for me ran a smart race there,
:18:09. > :18:13.that was Maslak. He's been good enough to do that. Controlled the
:18:14. > :18:20.race. Gordon was too slow, too far away. Everybody was chasing. Clemons
:18:21. > :18:26.was lucky to get through on the inside. This was the man who most
:18:27. > :18:32.impressed. Swiftly through the very first 200, 21.
:18:33. > :18:39.Coasting down the back straight, hitting the corner with no track in
:18:40. > :18:44.front of him and coming to see where the other runners were. Really
:18:45. > :18:47.destroyed them on that first 200 and set himself up perfectly well an
:18:48. > :18:51.everybody literally was scrapping around behind him. Trying to
:18:52. > :18:55.manoeuvre at great speed through the gaps. Did work for some. That man
:18:56. > :19:09.too me looks like the favourite. Very good indeed from Maslak. If he
:19:10. > :19:15.wasn't one of the favourites before, he certainly is now. Gordon,
:19:16. > :19:21.goodness me, that wasn't very good from him.
:19:22. > :19:38.Nigel Levine, 46.84 in fifth place behind Gordon.
:19:39. > :19:52.Disappointing for Nigel Levine. He said he thought he turned a
:19:53. > :19:59.corner, you know, in terms of his maturity and expectations.
:20:00. > :20:03.It just goes to show that the slightest lapse in concentration
:20:04. > :20:08.which happened in the heat for him, he found himself in that awful lane
:20:09. > :20:14.one and it was just too much hard work for him. Tried his best but it
:20:15. > :20:22.wasn't meant to Bo. 47.71 in Birmingham. -- 45.71. He seemed to
:20:23. > :20:26.have a certain game face on? Yes, he was strong. Usually has a great
:20:27. > :20:33.tactical brain which you need for the indoor 400m but it just didn't
:20:34. > :20:39.happen but he gave it everything. He attacked it. He made sure he was in
:20:40. > :20:42.contention after that first 200m, but just not good. It's a shame for
:20:43. > :20:47.him. He's a fighter as well so I'm sure
:20:48. > :20:51.he'll come back strong in the 4 X 4, there is a strong team there, medals
:20:52. > :20:55.numerous times in the last few years and they'll want to make amends? But
:20:56. > :20:57.what you notice from so many athletes is that when the
:20:58. > :21:02.opportunities present themselves, when you are fit, when you are
:21:03. > :21:05.healthy, you actually want to take the opportunities, but he will have
:21:06. > :21:10.to raise his game and confidence again to be part of that team and
:21:11. > :21:19.make sure they can get through and get the medal. We talked a lot about
:21:20. > :21:24.the pentathlon here. We sauna dene take the gold in that. Here we see
:21:25. > :21:29.her having the medal presented to her. A wonderful performance? It
:21:30. > :21:36.was. We don't get to hear the Dutch National Anthem very often in track
:21:37. > :21:43.and field. She competed really well. Very solid. That high jump is what
:21:44. > :21:47.really did the damage, you know. 193, which was far superior to
:21:48. > :21:51.everyone else in the field. She just then maintained the steady
:21:52. > :21:57.performance, ending on yet another personal best in the 8090, so well
:21:58. > :22:01.deserved for her -- 800. Steve Cram said what is it about the Dutch in
:22:02. > :22:04.their multidisciplines? They are very good, very strong. Watch out
:22:05. > :22:11.European Championships. Time to return to the action.
:22:12. > :22:19.Back to the track. Thank you very much. Here we go. The
:22:20. > :22:28.second heat of the 400 metres. Omelko. Gauntlett we just saw there
:22:29. > :22:37.as well. Omelko this morning ran a very good
:22:38. > :22:45.race. Polish-grown talent as well.
:22:46. > :22:48.David Verburg of the USA relay team which won the World Championships
:22:49. > :23:00.last year. Lifetime best of 44.75 which is
:23:01. > :23:09.pretty useful. Then the big three, Nery y Brenes,
:23:10. > :23:17.the Championship record holder. 45.11.
:23:18. > :23:26.Chris Brown, one of the fastest ever indoors.
:23:27. > :23:34.45. 78 is a lifetime best for him. Ran the first leg for the Bahamas
:23:35. > :23:47.relay team, beat the Americans at the London Olympics. And the Olympic
:23:48. > :23:57.silver medallist at just 18 years old, Luguelin Santos looking
:23:58. > :24:05.absolute absolutely almost delirious with passion and everything else.
:24:06. > :24:12.But really waiting for this 400 metres to start. It's going to be
:24:13. > :24:22.very interesting to see what makes the break for the inside first.
:24:23. > :24:30.Will it be Omelka or Gauntlett or one of the big three that I
:24:31. > :24:40.mentioned in lanes four, five, six. Brown, Santos.
:24:41. > :24:53.Heat two of the men's 400 metres. Away we go. Santos on the outside
:24:54. > :25:03.has been pressured by Chris Brown. He's been pressured by Brenes US
:25:04. > :25:11.himself. Verburrg coming up very quickly. Brown into the lead. Santos
:25:12. > :25:15.is very close. Santos on the shoulder of Verburg.
:25:16. > :25:28.Brown maintaining the lead. Brown just in the lead. Brown
:25:29. > :25:42.maintaining his first place. Digging in is Verburg. Santos. Santos
:25:43. > :25:53.completely out of it. First time around, once again, they
:25:54. > :25:58.seemed to just don't know what to do, they are moving out, drifting
:25:59. > :26:03.in. And it's causing some of the top players big problems, people we
:26:04. > :26:06.expect to really cruise through to the final, Santos, for example, the
:26:07. > :26:11.Olympic silver medallist is struggling in fourth, which means he
:26:12. > :26:17.is out, but Chris Brown, the man who's won more medals than anybody
:26:18. > :26:22.else at this event indoors, has made himself comfortably the winner and
:26:23. > :26:28.is through to the final. Yes, he looks the most relaxed of
:26:29. > :26:42.all of them. Absolutely superb. Winning it very comfortably indeed.
:26:43. > :26:54.Perfect timing. The winner Chris Brown in 46. 19.
:26:55. > :27:06.So there we have it. Brown undoubtedly the winner. Followed by
:27:07. > :27:14.Brenes. And Verburg of the US came in at a very creditable third place.
:27:15. > :27:20.I think it's fair to say it's been a day of mixed fortunes for Britain
:27:21. > :27:24.here in Sopol, Denise. We saw some stellar international performances.
:27:25. > :27:35.Sally Pearson delivered in the hurdles, so did Stephanie Porter of
:27:36. > :27:40.Great Britain. A mouth-watering thing to look forward to for
:27:41. > :27:45.tomorrow? Pearson looks in super form. She's ready to deliver for the
:27:46. > :27:50.championships big time. Tiffany is somebody who delivers time and
:27:51. > :27:57.again. When I spoke to her earlier after her race you could tell
:27:58. > :28:02.tomorrow it will open up? I think the bronze last year elevated her
:28:03. > :28:06.expectation. She knows he's been good -- she's been good enough but
:28:07. > :28:11.is not quite there. This time around, a new improved Tiffany and I
:28:12. > :28:19.do believe he's here for a medal. Let's hope she can deliver tomorrow.
:28:20. > :28:24.Let's hope the men can do so as well. We are back in the morning at
:28:25. > :28:30.10 am. Join us if you can. Two more sessions tomorrow. Action-packed.
:28:31. > :28:35.Obviously it's been a mixed day for Great Britain and Northern Ireland
:28:36. > :28:41.today. Disappointment for Laura Muir and Nigel Lescience, but impressive
:28:42. > :28:45.performances from lots of the others. -- Nigel Levine. Thanks for
:28:46. > :28:49.watching. Goodbye!
