:00:46. > :01:05.Hello and welcome to the World Indoor Athletics Championships from
:01:06. > :01:08.Portland, Oregon. After the controversies of the past few
:01:09. > :01:14.months, the athletes will have their say. Lots of great action in store
:01:15. > :01:22.in the specially built track. It has been converted to a 7000 seat
:01:23. > :01:27.capacity indoor arena. Hopefully the striking track will cut to
:01:28. > :01:32.everyone's attention. Hopefully some medals for Great Britain. One medal
:01:33. > :01:38.hope in the first event we will see, the 60 metre hurdles. We will be
:01:39. > :01:42.giving you a timetable for the remainder of the evening very
:01:43. > :01:54.shortly. So far, the crowds have been excellent. They have plenty to
:01:55. > :02:13.cheer about. Alina Talay is certainly a medal contender. Tiffany
:02:14. > :02:17.Porter is in it as well. Rhianna -- Brianna Rollins is number one in the
:02:18. > :02:23.world, a number of women will be hoping to place in this event.
:02:24. > :02:30.Solomon has to get in the top two if she is to make it through. The two
:02:31. > :02:41.fastest from the three races will make the finals. Watch out for Alina
:02:42. > :02:53.Talay closest to camera. Alina Talay has some work to do, Solomon is
:02:54. > :03:03.right in it. Brianna Rollins as expected got away well, such good
:03:04. > :03:19.form. Didn't have to be as quick as she usually is. Welcome and good
:03:20. > :03:26.evening to 20 minute -- Tony Minicello. I think if you can get a
:03:27. > :03:34.low eight seconds, it might be good enough to make the final. Sometimes
:03:35. > :03:41.you come out to the first event of the evening, the atmosphere has been
:03:42. > :03:42.good here. Certainly this event has been of very high quality this
:03:43. > :04:13.year. I think Rollins is certainly capable
:04:14. > :04:18.of the gold-medal. Two Ukrainians here tonight. This is the
:04:19. > :04:47.penultimate event of the Penthouse Forum for the women. -- the
:04:48. > :04:53.pentathlon for women. Morgan Lake, the junior champion of the high
:04:54. > :05:04.jump. The first jump was over six metres. The best so far this year.
:05:05. > :05:19.We have seen a similar reaction to everything she has done today. This
:05:20. > :05:30.man's event is being dominated by the American -- men's.
:05:31. > :05:49.Confirmation of the result of the first of the heats of the 60 metre
:05:50. > :05:56.hurdles. It is run from Solomon, she has to hope that is quick enough --
:05:57. > :06:28.a decent run. Quite a busy start already. Lots more to come.
:06:29. > :06:42.Lots to look forward to. Now we can move on to seeing Tiffany Porter in
:06:43. > :06:50.action in the second heat. We also have the surprise world champion of
:06:51. > :07:08.last year, it Danny Williams -- Danielle Williams. America will have
:07:09. > :07:26.three contestants in this important event.
:07:27. > :07:35.It look like it could have been a great outdoor season for her, but it
:07:36. > :07:46.did not really materialise. We have seen Rollins qualify, this track
:07:47. > :08:00.seems to be pretty quick. It is not putting the athletes off. No room
:08:01. > :08:02.for error. 60 hurdles. Try and be clean over the hurdles. Tiffany
:08:03. > :08:24.Porter should be able to go through. Tiffany Porter had a very bad start.
:08:25. > :08:36.Williams has gone out, the world champion has gone out. A bit of a
:08:37. > :08:49.ropey start, I said Daniel Williams might struggle -- Danielle. I think
:08:50. > :09:05.Tiffany Porter put her arm up to the air and went vertical straight away.
:09:06. > :09:11.Williams had some problems, too. I think she would have expected to be
:09:12. > :09:31.a Jamaican, but she would have been panicking a bit more. -- eat the
:09:32. > :09:42.Jamaican. A good day for her so far, in third place.
:09:43. > :10:05.6.37 in the first round. 6.42 is the season's best. She is still in third
:10:06. > :10:14.place might be -- third place behind the two Ukrainians. This is her
:10:15. > :10:41.husband. He has not had a great shot put so far. 13.39 in the second
:10:42. > :10:47.round. A bit of pressure here. He will expect to go over 14 metres if
:10:48. > :11:02.he gets it right. That is probably closer to 15 done 14. Just what he
:11:03. > :11:16.would have wanted at this stage. -- than. He also had a huge long jump,
:11:17. > :11:41.even by his own high standards. Kendal Williams, had a pretty solid
:11:42. > :11:55.days -- Kendell. Jessica Ennis Hill is out. We do have Morgan Lake. Look
:11:56. > :12:10.at that, way behind the board. No improvement for her. The Hungarian
:12:11. > :12:35.had a marginal foul in the second attempt. Her third and final jump in
:12:36. > :12:37.the pentathlon. The longest jump we have seen so far has been from the
:12:38. > :13:06.Ukrainian. I can tell you at the minute that
:13:07. > :13:11.things are looking good for Solomon in the women's 60 metre hurdles. She
:13:12. > :13:15.is the fastest of the fastest losers in the only two spots them
:13:16. > :13:28.available. Not looking too bad for her. Next her we have the Canadian
:13:29. > :13:42.representative. Still going very, very quick. Has produced a season's
:13:43. > :14:01.best in her heyday. When after the American Championships and got it by
:14:02. > :14:05.Rollins. That event last year was decimated with people doing false
:14:06. > :14:13.starts and not getting through the rounds they were expected to. But
:14:14. > :14:21.here in doors, Olympic year. A great opportunity for Harrison. And again
:14:22. > :14:25.just watch the Times because despite such a good start in the previous
:14:26. > :14:38.semifinals, Solomon ran well in the first one. Let's hope we can get two
:14:39. > :14:43.into the final. Another cracking start from Harrison away and look at
:14:44. > :14:49.this. Just putting a bit of a gap between herself and others. 7.8,
:14:50. > :14:59.matching her teammate. Her teammate Rollins. Just watching, we will wait
:15:00. > :15:05.for the results to come through, but it may well be that the placed
:15:06. > :15:15.athlete, I don't think anyone will race quicker than Solomon. Then this
:15:16. > :15:21.track from last week, I think. The time in between the hurdles will be
:15:22. > :15:24.a bit quicker. If you look at them, they are running exceptionally well.
:15:25. > :15:32.This is an event that women are getting so much better at. We have
:15:33. > :15:38.not got Sally Pearson here, wait for her to come back to full fitness.
:15:39. > :15:46.You are right when you look at it. The competitiveness of the event,
:15:47. > :15:51.both in and outdoors. Last year was a surprise podium. It didn't have
:15:52. > :15:54.many of the top names getting through for the medals. That
:15:55. > :15:57.certainly here, the Americans might be hoping for the one, the Americans
:15:58. > :16:05.might be hoping for the one, two, three. Confirmation of that. The new
:16:06. > :16:10.international record for the Croatian. Not sure that all be good
:16:11. > :16:13.enough for her to go through. It might well be a tight, we'll see who
:16:14. > :16:47.goes through the two fastest losers. Certainly Solomon will be
:16:48. > :16:51.one of them. You do your training on your normal track, slip at home and
:16:52. > :17:02.head down the road. There are the standings during the shot put in the
:17:03. > :17:09.Hat South London -- epitaph on -- heptathlon. Might have just lost his
:17:10. > :17:16.chance among the medals on home soil. No bricks involved in that
:17:17. > :17:54.event that will conclude to borrow a group -- tomorrow evening. She
:17:55. > :18:01.missed out unfortunately. The 6.03 has made a difference. Previously,
:18:02. > :18:12.she would jump 5.89. ), great written's Morgan Lake. -- ), -- all
:18:13. > :18:19.right then, Great Britain's Morgan Lake. It feels like and nearly day,
:18:20. > :18:27.if I can call it that. 8.7 she started her day. Good lift on that,
:18:28. > :18:34.decent leg shoot. Maybe get Tony to give his technical analysis of that.
:18:35. > :18:41.What do you make of that long jump? Really slowed down and the broad --
:18:42. > :18:46.into the board. Think of breaking and the speed and what you see as a
:18:47. > :18:53.result of that is why she popped up in the air. No improvement for
:18:54. > :18:59.Morgan Lake. The Ukrainian even leader with a huge effort, that
:19:00. > :19:05.6.66, a lifetime best, what a time to do it. Might she be on her way to
:19:06. > :19:13.taking her first ever global title? Just 25 years of age. Has really
:19:14. > :19:17.attacked this pentathlon. She made great grounds in the shot put.
:19:18. > :19:24.He/she goes, last round. Another good effort. Smack in between the
:19:25. > :19:27.six on the seven metre marks. You can see behind her there. We will
:19:28. > :19:35.wait for that to be measured. -- smack bang in between. A few of the
:19:36. > :19:40.athletes are already out hitting ready for the semi-final of the
:19:41. > :19:52.men's 60 metres. What a mouthwatering prospect we have in
:19:53. > :19:56.the races coming up. Watch out for the former world youth champion from
:19:57. > :20:05.Japan who ran very well in qualification. Rana from Barbados as
:20:06. > :20:08.well. The competitive field with no room for error here. First two in
:20:09. > :20:15.each of these semifinals and the two fastest losers to go through to the
:20:16. > :20:28.semi-final. And one Adams from Saint Kitts and Nevis. -- Antoine. He is
:20:29. > :20:33.27 years of age and has set a new personal best. He has had quite a
:20:34. > :20:37.few races in door already this year, coming at the top form at the right
:20:38. > :20:45.time. Haven't seen too much of him, really. 22 years of age. Huge
:20:46. > :20:50.opportunity for him. He seems to have been around for ages now. Very
:20:51. > :21:00.close to his personal best in qualification. Got off to a really
:21:01. > :21:06.good start, if you does that again and he will do well. Had a great
:21:07. > :21:17.World Championships last year, the American, won the bronze outdoors.
:21:18. > :21:22.He has looked pretty Gerd so far in Dawson says he is getting back to
:21:23. > :21:26.his best. This man ran a personal best in qualification, still just 20
:21:27. > :21:36.years of age. Great Japanese talent. Next to him the race from Trinidad
:21:37. > :21:50.Tobago. And outside him will be our man from the Ivory Coast. Lots to
:21:51. > :21:57.come. The 60 metre final will be the last event tonight if you can hang
:21:58. > :22:07.with us for long. Will James be able to deal with the challenge of the
:22:08. > :22:13.American alongside him. And Kiryu, this great Japanese talent on the
:22:14. > :22:19.right of James. Just a top two to go through.
:22:20. > :22:35.Needs a really good start. Oh, James, is that a false start? Well
:22:36. > :22:47.known to British viewers. That looked pretty clear to me. Watch
:22:48. > :22:51.this, Tony. I don't think so. There is a new start rule now, this idea
:22:52. > :22:56.that you can twitch on the set of vision but if you come back to still
:22:57. > :23:01.before the gun, then it can be seen as just a warning. I had this
:23:02. > :23:09.explained to me at the British trials, where the British athlete
:23:10. > :23:15.who would have been here to defend his title was disqualified and
:23:16. > :23:18.didn't make the British team and now, James, his World Championship
:23:19. > :23:26.hopes disappear in a split second. A false start and he knows what an
:23:27. > :23:30.opportunity goes down the drain there for him. He came do these
:23:31. > :23:37.World Championships to set up his Olympic year, hoping in a real
:23:38. > :23:46.positive manner and it has ended in failure. He is out, it is pretty
:23:47. > :23:51.clear. I said he had to get a good start, he is always aware of that.
:23:52. > :23:58.And there is that forward movement as the gun goes. If he held himself
:23:59. > :24:09.a split-2nd before him I have been all right but he is gone. The
:24:10. > :24:15.American way it nice and clean. Kiryu run out of it. What are run by
:24:16. > :24:18.the man from Barbados. He gets the second spotlight the American and
:24:19. > :24:22.Kiryu will have to try and wait and see what sort of time he gets
:24:23. > :24:26.given. But would the talent to come in the next two semifinals, it might
:24:27. > :24:36.not be quick enough. You can almost see a little twitch from the
:24:37. > :24:44.American. The young Japanese athlete, a cooking himself very well
:24:45. > :24:52.-- equipping. Just behind the other two. Drama in the first heat, not
:24:53. > :25:01.the sort of drama the British fans would have hoped for. His coach will
:25:02. > :25:05.be annoyed. As any coach would be. It was a photo finish. Let's have
:25:06. > :25:09.another look at this, just to reiterate that point. He was on the
:25:10. > :25:15.way, you could see him trying to hold his cell back that it was too
:25:16. > :25:21.late. -- himself. He didn't have time to come back and settle. The
:25:22. > :25:25.blocks, they have this measurement device on it that it can see it
:25:26. > :25:31.gives them a trace. A bit like a heart trace and therefore they can
:25:32. > :25:35.see when the person is moving. The Canadian in the last round of the
:25:36. > :25:43.long jump. Looking to wrestle back into the lead that she held earlier
:25:44. > :25:49.today. She watched her husband romped to what looks like a certain
:25:50. > :25:56.victory in the men's version of the multi- events. Look at that, a big
:25:57. > :26:02.foul for her. She is a silver-medallist in the indoors and
:26:03. > :26:05.out. The Ukrainian looks like quite a handful. That is the confirmation
:26:06. > :26:20.of the men's version of the multi- events. Ashton eaten way out in
:26:21. > :26:44.front. -- Eaton. It is the American, Ashton Eaton a class above the rest.
:26:45. > :27:06.That is a national record for Gittens. Watch out for the ratio
:27:07. > :27:16.from -- racer from China. The Spanish athlete was not too sluggish
:27:17. > :27:20.either. Another to have run a new personal best this year, although he
:27:21. > :27:23.was a fair way off that in qualification. This track seems to
:27:24. > :27:37.be pretty quick, a lot of personal bests and a few national records
:27:38. > :27:41.kicking around already. Kemar from the Cayman Islands. Figures in
:27:42. > :28:15.three. -- he goes. 6.47 last year and 6.51 this year,
:28:16. > :28:25.he is pretty quick. Personal best to make it through to this stage.
:28:26. > :28:34.Impressed with the Chinese athletes, this guy is just 22 years of age.
:28:35. > :28:48.And from Zimbabwe, the former African junior champion. Kim Collins
:28:49. > :28:53.never seems to be getting any slower, not losing any enthusiasm.
:28:54. > :29:03.Collins has been pretty good out off the blocks this winter. If you are
:29:04. > :29:11.watching in Glasgow, you might remember that he pulled a hamstring.
:29:12. > :29:28.He has obviously recovered well, he is quite sharp this morning. The top
:29:29. > :29:39.two will qualify for the final. Collins is coming through, takes it
:29:40. > :29:47.from Rogers. 6.49. That is very close to his personal best. We had a
:29:48. > :30:11.6-point fall for this morning, that was in the top times. Collins has
:30:12. > :30:24.got a lovely action, he never changes it. Rogers glancing across,
:30:25. > :30:32.it was not a glance of, oh, I'm letting you win this. Even running
:30:33. > :30:42.at 6.49, he seems to be running within himself, it looks so smooth.
:30:43. > :30:51.Here are the standings after four of them is of the pentathlon.
:30:52. > :31:07.It looks like Ukraine versus kind of all the top spot. Just the 800
:31:08. > :31:22.metres to come -- Ukraine versus Canada. Five events in one day, it's
:31:23. > :31:40.a tough day, isn't it? Tiredness comes into it. They might have had a
:31:41. > :31:46.little bit of a break now, maybe about an hour. They should have
:31:47. > :32:19.about 45 minutes to warm up for the long jump. Just confirming the
:32:20. > :32:23.result. He needed to get a good start, he has been in good form. I
:32:24. > :32:32.think even with an average start, he might have done just as well. He
:32:33. > :32:45.knew what he had done. There was no coming back from that. Our best
:32:46. > :32:57.chance of a medal in the 60 metres, not able to get one because of the
:32:58. > :33:08.false start. Of the keen or too nervous? -- over? For whatever
:33:09. > :33:13.reason, he seems to slip off the back block a little bit. He hasn't
:33:14. > :33:18.got enough time to resettle himself. There are a bit of nerves, but it
:33:19. > :33:30.looks as though he slips of that back foot. You will probably see it
:33:31. > :33:56.from the front view. If he was doing that... He is trying to settle and
:33:57. > :34:02.sell. -- settle himself. A bit more reflects like a rubber band to try
:34:03. > :34:29.and get off the blocks even faster. This is the start list for the third
:34:30. > :34:35.semi-final. There's Andy Robertson. A good start this morning, he will
:34:36. > :34:46.have to finish off well if he can maintain it. It is a very difficult
:34:47. > :34:52.semi-final. 6-point for in qualification, didn't even get a
:34:53. > :35:16.great start. When he flows, there is nobody better. Nobody flows as well
:35:17. > :35:31.as Powell does. He received a personal best this year, 6.58. Andy
:35:32. > :35:45.Robertson will have to run the race of his life here if he is going to
:35:46. > :36:08.make it through. Robertson could run something like that, he could give
:36:09. > :36:20.himself time to go through. A clean start. Powell gets off to a good
:36:21. > :36:36.start. 6.43 this time! Getting quicker. He makes it look so easy.
:36:37. > :36:42.Martin Bracey never really got going, he could not react to the
:36:43. > :36:55.speed of Powell. Going backwards there. Trying to come back, but not
:36:56. > :37:06.catching Su. Look how relaxed Powell looks. He does flows. Is confident,
:37:07. > :37:11.he has his head in the right position. Hitting the positions
:37:12. > :37:16.properly. He maintains the frequency of his stride. Not only is his
:37:17. > :37:30.stride getting longer, he is still hitting the ground so quickly. Two
:37:31. > :37:51.scintillating performances from Powell. 6-point for in the
:37:52. > :37:58.semi-final. Brilliant performance. I think Martin Bracey will go through
:37:59. > :38:02.as the fastest loser, not a good performance from him. Kim Collins
:38:03. > :38:09.might be the only one to challenge Powell. He was the only one who
:38:10. > :38:12.looked as relaxed. It will be interesting if someone can put
:38:13. > :38:17.Powell under pressure. That will affect him. We've seen how he
:38:18. > :38:22.doesn't quite get into the transition, doesn't get that flow.
:38:23. > :38:44.If you could put him under pressure, and do it early, that is the best.
:38:45. > :38:51.Su setting a new Asian indoor record, -- Marvin Bracy. He may well
:38:52. > :38:56.go through as the fastest loser. Powell, I always go back to Osaka in
:38:57. > :39:01.1997. He's never won a world title or a global title, outdoors or
:39:02. > :39:05.indoors. When he is not under pressure, you make a very valid
:39:06. > :39:13.point that it looks fantastic. When he is under pressure, he just
:39:14. > :39:18.tightens up. He is now saying, I am as good as I've ever been. He may
:39:19. > :39:23.well be right after what we've seen today. It's whether he's got the
:39:24. > :39:34.confidence and that self assurance to take care of business. There
:39:35. > :39:45.wasn't much self from James Dasaolu. The starting technique that
:39:46. > :39:50.you are pointing out, he obviously hasn't started doing this now. He
:39:51. > :40:03.has been working on this. But you get to a point where you think, OK,
:40:04. > :40:11.the semi-final is not a time for risk-taking. I think he's got to be
:40:12. > :40:15.confident in himself, and he has to understand that he is one of the
:40:16. > :40:19.fastest people in this heat. If he can do stride out, hit his positions
:40:20. > :40:20.and flow-through, it can be confident of finishing in the top
:40:21. > :40:55.two. Here are the qualifiers. They will
:40:56. > :41:17.be led by Asafa Powell. The women's 60 metre hurdles was tight.
:41:18. > :41:32.Tiffany Porter will need to start better than she did in the first
:41:33. > :41:57.race. Angela White took a little while to sort it out. Another chance
:41:58. > :42:17.to have a look at Morgan Lake in the long jump. Her first-round jump.
:42:18. > :42:32.6.03. That keeps the potential of a world indoor junior record alive.
:42:33. > :42:37.Tony, you did some maths. 2.18 is the best? It's been a really good
:42:38. > :42:44.day for Morgan Lake, you just sense there is more there. The backdrops
:42:45. > :42:51.and is a little bit, reduces her speed into the final. If she doesn't
:42:52. > :42:57.get across and take it into the pit, she drives out well. A good upright
:42:58. > :43:01.position. Watch the head, leans back that little bit before the board. It
:43:02. > :43:06.is normal, you think it will give you a bit more height. It is very
:43:07. > :43:13.instinctive. But it just takes the speed of a little bit. That stops
:43:14. > :43:23.are getting across-the-board. She was a junior last year, she is on
:43:24. > :43:26.the verge. If she can run 2.17, she is a very young girl stopped that
:43:27. > :43:46.would be incredible. He lives in Portland. Obviously
:43:47. > :43:52.popping down to watch an event coming up shortly. He is going to
:43:53. > :44:03.swap seats with Paul Radcliffe. -- Paula Radcliffe. You can see the
:44:04. > :44:13.event he will take place in in Cardiff again live on the BBC. He
:44:14. > :44:19.has only had one indoor race that Tom Lucas year which was in Glasgow.
:44:20. > :44:24.His preparations for Rio for him, he wanted to have a good last out on
:44:25. > :44:36.the roads next week and Paula Radcliffe is now joined me. -- has
:44:37. > :44:41.now. It will be a tough race but I think it is one that he has spent a
:44:42. > :44:45.lot of time getting prepared for. Really working towards this winter
:44:46. > :44:48.and he wants to go out and try and run fast as well is trying to win in
:44:49. > :44:59.Cardiff will stop if you want to come and take part, there is a mass
:45:00. > :45:05.race there has well. You get a chance to run on the same course as
:45:06. > :45:10.the athletes. That is next week and as I said the 1500 metre heats, I
:45:11. > :45:16.should have said a bigger welcome to Paula, she has been sitting
:45:17. > :45:22.patiently waiting to get started. These are two cracking heats and two
:45:23. > :45:31.tough races, really. Britain represented. Charlie, he has been
:45:32. > :45:37.training with Mo Farah in Ethiopia from January into February. They
:45:38. > :45:40.will both have the run really, really well to make it through in
:45:41. > :45:48.one of the highest quality events at these World Championships. Despite
:45:49. > :45:53.the quality being high, there is only 15 entrants. Seven in this
:45:54. > :45:54.race, hate in the next one. The seven men the lineup in the first
:45:55. > :46:18.the two racers... -- eight. Of the two races, I would say this
:46:19. > :46:23.one is probably the slightly easier one. But I suppose, they are only
:46:24. > :46:27.getting rid of six people. The quality is high but they are only
:46:28. > :46:30.getting rid of six people. They could have just gone around the back
:46:31. > :46:43.and had a quick run around the car park and sorted it out then. In this
:46:44. > :46:47.kind of event, you really have to run your heat as if it is the final
:46:48. > :47:01.and just judge it and not by looking around until the last lap. The
:47:02. > :47:04.British racer will be trying to get as much information as he can about
:47:05. > :47:09.this first heat so he knows her to give himself the best chance of
:47:10. > :47:16.coming through as a fastest loser as they should arise. He had a bit of a
:47:17. > :47:20.tough time winning the US championships here last weekend. The
:47:21. > :47:25.only just held off Robbie and Roos who will be going in the next heat.
:47:26. > :47:32.Charlie Grice had a bit of a tough time at the British Championships as
:47:33. > :47:40.well. He has been training well, preparing for these World
:47:41. > :48:01.Championships. He is going to have his work cut out. I am pretty sure
:48:02. > :48:08.that Charlie will be OK. The canyon is certainly someone you wouldn't
:48:09. > :48:13.fear too much. -- Kenyan. I think if I were Charlie, his coach might well
:48:14. > :48:19.have said just follow the American. Whatever he does, you will be pretty
:48:20. > :48:24.close, certainly if you are there were two or three laps to go you
:48:25. > :48:29.will be in a good spot. He has proven time and time again that,
:48:30. > :48:32.championship, he can really time to perfection and run really well but I
:48:33. > :48:36.think this year especially he is a lot further on in the indoor season
:48:37. > :48:41.and he has been in previous years and seems to be racing very, very
:48:42. > :48:47.well. He is an extremely good shape and is going to tactically run
:48:48. > :48:56.really well. Charlie has cut himself in a good position. Monitor but stay
:48:57. > :49:00.out of the bumping and barging. The danger always is that you are in a
:49:01. > :49:04.small field, people have been invited to these World Championships
:49:05. > :49:10.so there is a mixture of high quality. These guys wouldn't be here
:49:11. > :49:20.as they couldn't finish fast. They have won the national championships
:49:21. > :49:31.or run a qualifying time all but the -- or both. As I said, I think
:49:32. > :49:38.Charlie can kick the Kenyan. He is taking some initiative as he moves
:49:39. > :49:43.up. The Spaniard has gone, so that makes Charlie's your little easier.
:49:44. > :49:47.He still leads to concentrate on the task at hand and the good thing for
:49:48. > :49:51.him is that given the chance to go away with Mo Farah and get that
:49:52. > :49:54.extra dangerous and strengthen them will have done his confidence a lot
:49:55. > :50:00.of good but also mean that his insurance is strong and can give
:50:01. > :50:09.them different ways of running the race and maybe taking it on earlier.
:50:10. > :50:14.200 metre laps indoors. It is slow throughout first 800. That won't
:50:15. > :50:20.bother the American is up on the outside. Charlie got pushed into the
:50:21. > :50:24.hole and got his elbows out that got himself out of the box. A bitter
:50:25. > :50:32.rough-and-tumble as you often get indoors. The American finds himself
:50:33. > :50:37.at the back again after all of that. Charlie Grice did a lot to get
:50:38. > :50:47.himself out of trouble but didn't do the American any favours. Two laps
:50:48. > :50:52.to go. The American lurking right on the outside. He will be superfast
:50:53. > :50:59.into the last 300 metres and Charlie has good to stay on top of this
:51:00. > :51:02.year. The Ethiopian trying to hold off the American who looks
:51:03. > :51:07.comfortable. Charlie has some work to do on this last lap. They are all
:51:08. > :51:13.still there. Every single one of them has a chance. Just the top
:51:14. > :51:17.three don't forget to go through. Looks like he is tying up a little
:51:18. > :51:25.bit and I don't think he has much left to give now. Charlie Grice is
:51:26. > :51:31.having a real struggle here. At the front, the American. Pulling well
:51:32. > :51:38.clear of the others. It will be a good finish, the American will hold
:51:39. > :51:41.on for the win has expected. I think that is going to be a very
:51:42. > :51:53.disappointed Charlie Grice, because he couldn't even get the fourth
:51:54. > :52:23.spot. I didn't think he looked great in the trials. May be that food
:52:24. > :52:27.poisoning or whatever he picked up overseas took a little too much out
:52:28. > :52:30.of his system. That is not a true reflection of the talent that
:52:31. > :52:33.Charlie Grice has but he will be able to go away from me and build on
:52:34. > :52:39.it and hopefully come back much better ready for the summer. Big
:52:40. > :52:46.year ahead, it will be tough to make the British team. At the centre of
:52:47. > :53:03.it, the American knows what is like to global metals indoors and
:53:04. > :53:19.outdoors. He ran a good session of four times 800 metres. They all
:53:20. > :53:23.qualified very comfortably. Charlie Grice, he can only cross his fingers
:53:24. > :53:28.and hope that for some reason in the second semi-final they crawl around
:53:29. > :53:48.but that doesn't look good enough to make the final. It is a massive
:53:49. > :53:55.convention centre that is just a blank space. Watching the indoor
:53:56. > :54:00.warmup area, everything has had to be created for the specially if you
:54:01. > :54:27.like. Kim: is just trying to relax as his agent walks with him. --: is
:54:28. > :54:36.-- Collins. He has not managed to convert. There is the man from
:54:37. > :54:41.Barbados. There has been some surprises. Particularly the Chinese
:54:42. > :54:50.sprinters for me. The young Japanese athlete as well. Asian sprinting
:54:51. > :55:00.going through indeed. Obviously the Olympics are such an important year
:55:01. > :55:08.has ever. -- has ever -- has ever -- as ever.
:55:09. > :55:19.For many athletes, indoors does not figure at all. Once I got pulled in
:55:20. > :55:23.to run the Birmingham indoors because someone was attempting the
:55:24. > :55:26.world record in the 5000 metres and they needed a enough people to be on
:55:27. > :55:35.the start line for the qualifiers a world record. It drafted for a quick
:55:36. > :55:48.speed trial indoors. The second semi-final. Nick Willis of New
:55:49. > :56:05.Zealand, one of the big names. All taking on Chris O'Hare of great
:56:06. > :56:16.Great Britain. Chris O'Hare knows that the season he has had sofa, and
:56:17. > :56:32.has been a great season. Based in America, the Spanish sprinter. He
:56:33. > :56:41.has watched this race from Djibouti this year. What about Willis finally
:56:42. > :56:46.in up, after watching the American trials on television he said, was in
:56:47. > :56:49.Robbie Andrews good? I hope he isn't in my heat in the world
:56:50. > :56:54.championships. He is, standing right next to them. That was Robbie
:56:55. > :57:02.Andrews. The reason he is worried about him is that he is a very quick
:57:03. > :57:21.finish. Again, the Kenyan is not sending their best 1500 metre
:57:22. > :57:24.runners here. Chris O'Hare and those that top three definitely go through
:57:25. > :57:29.but all of these men know that the first heat was not particularly fast
:57:30. > :57:34.and if they just run a fairly steady pace and pick it up through the last
:57:35. > :57:47.406 men could go through from this race. That is what they should know
:57:48. > :57:50.and that is what we hope they know. We will get an idea through the
:57:51. > :57:54.first couple of laps and neither pace they are on. Hopefully they
:57:55. > :57:57.will have ticked up on that because the quality in this field is such
:57:58. > :58:01.that you do need to take advantage of that. You can't just rely on a
:58:02. > :58:07.fast finish because all of these guys can finish fast. Robbie Andrews
:58:08. > :58:40.is a huge danger if you let it go too slow.
:58:41. > :58:55.Setting them up at a good pace. Andrews of the USA in third place.
:58:56. > :59:06.Six of the top seven no bat at this pace they only have to get ahead of
:59:07. > :59:16.one person. -- know that at this pace. Sitting in a good position,
:59:17. > :59:22.you will be able to see who is getting in trouble as it continues.
:59:23. > :59:29.Maybe they will decide to take turns at the front. You hate that it's not
:59:30. > :59:47.all going to lose the work that they've done and people will be
:59:48. > :59:52.reluctant to take first place. You don't win titles if you haven't got
:59:53. > :00:14.some pace. Slowing a little bit here. Taking a wider track and an
:00:15. > :00:20.invitation to go around. The pace picks up again. Was it an invitation
:00:21. > :00:30.or some encouragement from Chris O'Hare to have somebody else go to
:00:31. > :01:07.the front? Andrews gets a little Nougues. Chris O'Hare in a great
:01:08. > :01:14.position -- a little nudge. Chris O'Hare running a very well judged
:01:15. > :01:21.race. Got into a good position, held it well. I think he runs so well in
:01:22. > :01:27.championship races, he knows where to put himself and he has that
:01:28. > :01:32.little bit of speed to be able to ease himself out of any trouble. He
:01:33. > :01:42.does, he has very good tactical decisions. He was frustrated in the
:01:43. > :01:53.summer when he went to Beijing. He got into the training this winter
:01:54. > :02:01.with a bit more fire. He controlled the race well. Chris O'Hare
:02:02. > :02:07.definitely has the tougher heat of the two. He would as though he
:02:08. > :02:16.belonged in one of the first three qualifying spots rather than just
:02:17. > :02:28.scraping through. None of the man who got through, I think that they
:02:29. > :02:52.knew they just had to get ahead -- men. A mouthwatering final, some
:02:53. > :03:19.amazing finalist. Confirmation of the winning time.
:03:20. > :03:52.What do you reckon? Has anything surprised you? I think Chris O'Hare
:03:53. > :03:56.will be surprised that he finished ahead of Andrews, he knows he can go
:03:57. > :04:26.away and raster to recover as quickly as possible for the final.
:04:27. > :04:32.Qualifiers for the 1500 metre final. No fastest losers from the first
:04:33. > :04:45.event, so sadly, Charlie Grace misses out on the final. This is
:04:46. > :05:00.actually the second day of these championships. Quite a few new
:05:01. > :05:12.innovations here. No medal ceremonies here at it in the venue.
:05:13. > :05:21.The whole arena was given over to the pole vault. All eyes were on the
:05:22. > :05:24.Olympic champion. However, the expectant fans would have to wait to
:05:25. > :05:35.see him in action as he sat out of several early rounds. 5.75 at the
:05:36. > :05:46.first attempt. The big surprise was Shaughnessy Barber. He only had one
:05:47. > :06:05.chance at this, but it wasn't to be this evening. The first problem on
:06:06. > :06:20.the otherwise flawless CV of Shawn Barber. Sam Hendrix was left to put
:06:21. > :06:30.the pressure on. He has the confidence and belief. Now, the
:06:31. > :06:38.Frenchman wants to underline his status as the world's number-1
:06:39. > :06:54.falter. A huge sense of expectation. Oh yes! Oh my goodness! -- vaulter.
:06:55. > :07:06.Kendricks claimed a commendable silver. The Frenchman continued to
:07:07. > :07:13.push himself to the limit. Oh yes! Retaining the world indoor title,
:07:14. > :07:21.and it's a championship record. He is in a class of his own. He raised
:07:22. > :07:39.the bar again to a potential 6.17 metres. No! Has he hurt himself?
:07:40. > :07:48.He's OK! It's good to try to jump really high. My first goal was to
:07:49. > :07:55.get the six metre jump, to secure the championship record means a
:07:56. > :08:08.lot. For the first time ever in a women's pole vaulting competition,
:08:09. > :08:17.for competitors cleared 4.80 metres -- four competitors. This successful
:08:18. > :08:30.clearance saw her go on to win bronze. The US pair battled it out
:08:31. > :08:45.for the title. Can she get over 4.85? Yes! But could the US go one
:08:46. > :08:53.better free championship record of 4.9? Called for the American, but
:08:54. > :09:01.there wasn't to be another record attempt. To win on home soil means a
:09:02. > :09:12.lot. To win it, I think it's a good builder for outdoor.
:09:13. > :09:29.A good start to the women's championships for the USA. We saw
:09:30. > :09:47.the Frenchman with a world record of six point 03. -- 6.03. He will be
:09:48. > :09:54.looking to take the gold in Rio in less than five months time.
:09:55. > :10:04.Everybody seemed to enjoy the pole vault, the whole stadium really
:10:05. > :10:10.liked it. Yes, they did, but they have other events running
:10:11. > :10:18.simultaneously. That is something in itself. It was entertaining and it
:10:19. > :10:31.was high quality. I think that the sport has to try things. You can see
:10:32. > :10:39.the introduction down the far end, you can see some of the shot put.
:10:40. > :10:48.The women are jumping towards the pit, you can see three Brits
:10:49. > :10:57.involved. In Beijing in the relays, there were a few good poses that
:10:58. > :11:06.people had been practised. It would be nice to see them. This was one of
:11:07. > :11:12.the big innovations of these championships, introducing that
:11:13. > :11:50.through the finals and semifinals. The big-name end the shot put... --
:11:51. > :12:06.in the shot put. Jacko Gill, a fantastic young star. Tom Walsh is a
:12:07. > :12:32.brilliant competitor. It is sort of Europe versus the states. The final
:12:33. > :12:37.athlete running across, Kurt Roberts. He might be the favourite
:12:38. > :12:42.and might he be the man who keeps the title with the Americans on home
:12:43. > :12:51.soil? A bit of extra pressure for him. The second best in the world, a
:12:52. > :13:24.big man. 1.91 metres, 127 kilos. The men's shotput final. It is the
:13:25. > :13:33.man from Congo to open the competition. Bang on 19 metres, or
:13:34. > :13:50.just shy of it. Here's a 20 metre plaster. -- plus throw. It was a
:13:51. > :13:58.foul for the opening throw. Are we going to see a bit of shot. You see
:13:59. > :14:06.his personal best and his season best. Both over the 20 metre mark.
:14:07. > :14:17.The big rotator. A massive shout. It is not a massive throw. You have got
:14:18. > :14:23.the time it right. I was talking with you earlier Tony, the rotation
:14:24. > :14:34.versus the glide. You have got to get it right. 18.50. A decent start
:14:35. > :14:40.for the Brazilian who will take the lead. Rotation versus linear,
:14:41. > :14:46.thoughts? It is one of those. I think when you are coaching the
:14:47. > :14:51.multi- events, consistency and performance is what you are after.
:14:52. > :14:56.The glide gives you that, but the rotation can give you more speed.
:14:57. > :15:00.But you have to control that speed. You see the guys here finishing very
:15:01. > :15:09.differently. It is being able to control that speed and catcher and
:15:10. > :15:17.Dravid that little bit higher. Not able to control that speed as you
:15:18. > :15:22.say. More things going on. The pressure is on the nerves are
:15:23. > :15:32.flying. It just is possibly an unwanted extra bit of jeopardy that
:15:33. > :15:38.can creep in. Adam Nelson, World champion in the past, a great
:15:39. > :15:44.exponent of the rotation. As we watch the Argentinian. Possibly the
:15:45. > :15:52.best grow so far. Was it a valid throw? I think it was. Finally we
:15:53. > :15:58.see that throw that puts a marker out as a lead. Something of a 20
:15:59. > :16:06.metres, you would expect. Just shy. I think the thing with the rotation
:16:07. > :16:11.is that these are very big guys and it is only a seven Foot Circle. You
:16:12. > :16:15.have got to rotate and get around. They cover the circle so quickly
:16:16. > :16:22.that it is difficult to stay in if you miss time it. They are big men,
:16:23. > :16:26.two metres tall is pretty typical. He is quick. Another throw, possibly
:16:27. > :16:48.just shy of 20 metres for the 20-year-old Egyptian. Season's
:16:49. > :16:52.best. Well, just shy. Second place so far. The big men yet to throw. It
:16:53. > :16:58.seems like ascending order in terms of your ability. The best growers
:16:59. > :17:04.will go last. In the final round, the top four only what's in the
:17:05. > :17:11.sixth round. Huge shout. Just over 19 metres. 28-year-old German,
:17:12. > :17:32.season's best at 20 point six. So, no one yet been over 20 metres.
:17:33. > :17:37.There are some nerves, some jangling. You have some men who have
:17:38. > :17:55.thrown over 21 metres, we will expect that. It is the heptathlon.
:17:56. > :18:06.Curtis Beach goes clear. His opening height of 1.87. Early days. Just
:18:07. > :18:13.looking to settle into this. Beach considered to be someone who might
:18:14. > :18:16.give Ashton something to think about. Very short of the enormous
:18:17. > :18:35.tally that he is accumulating on this first day. Back to the
:18:36. > :18:44.shotput, the Luxembourg Thrower. Just down that right-hand sector. We
:18:45. > :18:47.saw a wild shot earlier in the heptathlon. A photographer was hit
:18:48. > :18:50.down the left-hand sector from a throw that one wild outside of that
:18:51. > :18:55.cagey conceit protecting it from going out into the arena.
:18:56. > :19:00.Thankfully, no must too badly hurt by the looks of it. There was a
:19:01. > :19:12.little sympathy I felt for him at the time from anyone. He smiled it
:19:13. > :19:19.off and walked away. As we see the Croatian, 21 years of age. Looks
:19:20. > :19:23.pleased with that. But his feet underneath him, crucial when you are
:19:24. > :19:32.rotating to wait for your feet to get down before you drive up. He
:19:33. > :19:36.does like it. Is it me as fastest shotput competition? They are
:19:37. > :19:41.getting them in and out of the circle so quickly. Very little time.
:19:42. > :19:51.I totally agree. The oldest man in the competition takes to the circle.
:19:52. > :20:03.31 years of age. Quick measurements, is that new technology. --
:20:04. > :20:09.technology? This American system that comes from the NCAA, the next
:20:10. > :20:15.two throwers are ready to go. You are on deck and in the hold. As if
:20:16. > :20:19.you are on the deck of a ship and then you are in the circle. They are
:20:20. > :20:22.really getting them moving, which might be interesting later on
:20:23. > :20:32.because if you are rushing these guys through, they do get tired. Big
:20:33. > :20:46.throw for the Romanian. That was under a gag. Big throw from him. The
:20:47. > :20:50.lead so far 20.64 from the Croatian. But a big season's best takes the
:20:51. > :21:01.lead as we get towards the end of the first round. Jonathan Jones then
:21:02. > :21:16.with a season's vest that could threaten. Weigh down on that. 19
:21:17. > :21:24.athletes, a big field, maybe thou rattling them through to get this
:21:25. > :21:29.competition over. Is it also to highlight the last round when only
:21:30. > :21:38.so many are going to get to throw? They are working against the clock
:21:39. > :21:44.to get these rounds through. We watched Jacco Gill, such
:21:45. > :21:51.anticipation of this man coming of age. He is 21 now. Brilliant as a
:21:52. > :22:01.junior. Became the youngest ever world junior champion at the age of
:22:02. > :22:07.15. In the under 20 competition. Looking nervous, I would have to
:22:08. > :22:13.say. Just shrunk in terms of a little bit. Didn't make the most of
:22:14. > :22:22.his big levers. 189 centimetres tall. The top eight after three
:22:23. > :22:26.rounds only will take further part in the competition. That is the
:22:27. > :22:32.importance of these early marks that you have to get into the top eight
:22:33. > :22:37.to remain in the competition. Then only the top four and the final
:22:38. > :22:40.round, the sixth round. That is the innovation we referred to that we
:22:41. > :22:59.will see unfolding not too long if they carry on at this pace will stop
:23:00. > :23:08.the Nigerian. Well, a season's best of 21.11 and he needs all of that.
:23:09. > :23:15.19.84 for the Nigerian. He gets a mark on the board in fourth place so
:23:16. > :23:24.far. Right, Tom Walsh as we get towards the business end. Five left
:23:25. > :23:35.the throw. Possibly the better of the two New Zealand throwers. The
:23:36. > :23:42.surprise medal in Beijing. Throw short 21 metres. Around 20.5 or
:23:43. > :23:56.something like that. It is a decent first Thrower. We flick across to
:23:57. > :24:01.the long jump. No markers in the background there to give us any idea
:24:02. > :24:08.of how far that is but that is the opening jump from the Swedish
:24:09. > :24:24.jumper. Has the honour of starting the final of the women's long jump.
:24:25. > :24:33.Look at that, way behind the board. It is back to the shot. Crikey, what
:24:34. > :24:38.has he hit there? He has set something. I think that hit the
:24:39. > :24:43.upright that holds the netting. That is wild. Thank goodness it was
:24:44. > :24:54.there, could have ended up in the crowd. Field action, thick and fast.
:24:55. > :25:04.Certainly a contender in the heptathlon. Goes clear. Shotput. We
:25:05. > :25:07.are going to flip between these three field events, it would seem as
:25:08. > :25:20.we get towards the end of the first round. The big Canadian.
:25:21. > :25:26.25-year-old, fourth best in 2016. We will wait for that to be measured.
:25:27. > :25:32.By the way, that was a no jump in the first round as we see the
:25:33. > :25:42.Japanese jumper. Already composing herself. It is going to be jumps we
:25:43. > :25:46.expect in the late sixes, possibly in the seven metres plus to get on
:25:47. > :25:56.the roster in this women's long jump final. Well, that must be a foul for
:25:57. > :26:01.sure otherwise is a huge jump. We will come back to that, it looked
:26:02. > :26:15.enormous. Hopefully we will make some sense of that for you. Well,
:26:16. > :26:20.gives you an idea of what is going on in the arena here as we jump
:26:21. > :26:25.around these three field events will stop it is busy, it is hectic, but
:26:26. > :26:40.you have got the focus as we watch macro Beach of the USA make light
:26:41. > :26:44.work of his second height -- Beach. Final throw in the first round of
:26:45. > :26:55.the men's shotput final. Kurt Roberts, chasing that lead. Another
:26:56. > :27:03.while throw, that is out of the sector. I don't think I have seen so
:27:04. > :27:19.many shot put Smith's -- shotput throws Miss. That was definitely no
:27:20. > :27:29.jump. We watch the Romanian. There are 16 athletes, three Brit -- three
:27:30. > :27:32.are Brits. The top four will take part in this showcase last round
:27:33. > :27:37.where the rest of the arena will stop and jump in reverse order. Only
:27:38. > :27:53.a right to be in that last round and see what you can do. -- burn your
:27:54. > :28:15.right -- earn. They are coming thick and fast. We have only had one clean
:28:16. > :28:19.jump. The lead of 6.8 metres. If it is a quick surface, you only get to
:28:20. > :28:25.map warmup jumps see it to run your runway just twice. Maybe they are
:28:26. > :28:36.struggling a little bit. We have seen three no jumps in a row so far.
:28:37. > :28:42.Well, that is not even up to 6.5. Not a great start for her either.
:28:43. > :28:52.The much vaunted women's long jump yet to really get going. It will be
:28:53. > :28:58.tough to win a medal. Her German counterpart as well will have a say.
:28:59. > :29:05.In the second round of the shotput. The Polish throw likes it. That
:29:06. > :29:08.looks like an improvement for him, but it will be an improvement
:29:09. > :29:13.because of no throw in the first round. He has got one in. 20.89 the
:29:14. > :29:54.lead from the Romanian. In third place. Martins from
:29:55. > :29:59.Brazil, can she continued her lead? Doing well here. Looked as though
:30:00. > :30:07.she was well over on the board. No jump for her. Everybody may have to
:30:08. > :30:12.make some adjustments. There we talked about the track and the
:30:13. > :30:24.impact it has on the horizontal jumps. There was a marginal foul.
:30:25. > :30:29.You said it was really hard to see, when you're down there in the heat
:30:30. > :30:37.of the moment, but it's so obvious on the screen. It's just different
:30:38. > :30:42.when you're down there, in the moment. It is just about making
:30:43. > :30:48.those adjustments. For me when you work with an athlete, you set up the
:30:49. > :30:54.runway. When they take up the tracks and the adrenaline starts to go, my
:30:55. > :31:19.perspective is to move back in the shoe length because of that
:31:20. > :31:32.adrenaline. Not sure that's going to challenge the lead. One of the
:31:33. > :31:49.biggest man in the final here. -- men. An Olympic ROMs medallist in
:31:50. > :32:01.the past. That's what I do, I'd slow it down -- bronze medallist. I would
:32:02. > :32:12.take some time. First round looks like a foul. A big jump, around
:32:13. > :32:22.seven metres. A marginal foul. Possibly alluding to the fact that
:32:23. > :32:26.she has brought some form here. To a certain extent, it's mental game.
:32:27. > :32:30.The ability not to let the environment affect you, slow
:32:31. > :32:57.yourself down, do what you came to do and get the process right. The
:32:58. > :33:10.long jump, the Australian. 30 years of age. Has a season's best of 6.76.
:33:11. > :33:38.European indoor champion. Hit the board had. That is measured, going
:33:39. > :33:58.to take the lead. Here we have the habitats on. 1.93, goes clear --
:33:59. > :34:14.heptathlon. Round one of the long jump. Ugen has jumped brilliantly in
:34:15. > :34:21.doors on the circuit this year. Very consistent. First round of the long
:34:22. > :34:32.jump. That right foot just shot back on her. You see it so many times, it
:34:33. > :34:47.is quite literally her Achilles heel. She reaches out with the right
:34:48. > :34:57.and the left leg goes a little bit further ahead. We watched the event
:34:58. > :35:17.leader Thoreau what won't be an improvement in his lead on that shot
:35:18. > :35:37.-- throw. Back to Ugen, she takes the lead. Everyone will be watching
:35:38. > :36:02.that closely. So, Ugen is kind of the benchmark. Jonathan Jones at the
:36:03. > :36:10.shot put. One of two Americans. They are chasing the medals. Is it all
:36:11. > :36:17.wrapped up. You would think so, but that shot put earlier was about one
:36:18. > :36:29.metre down. He has lost some points, but he is the leader at the moment.
:36:30. > :36:42.You would hope he continues. This is athletics, you never know what might
:36:43. > :36:58.happen. Women's long jump. That's a good effort. No sight of a flag
:36:59. > :37:12.yet. That has got to be close. You could see the two judges to the
:37:13. > :37:23.right of the runway. Seven metres on the button, what an enormous lead
:37:24. > :37:53.that is. But there is some talent queueing up behind her. Reese jumped
:37:54. > :38:00.very well in the last few weeks. She will have seen that seven metre
:38:01. > :38:16.jump, it should give her some inspiration. She is very capable. An
:38:17. > :38:27.Olympic champion in 2012. A lifetime best of 7.23. It is her own
:38:28. > :38:43.championship record. Reese, chasing the seven metre lead. What does that
:38:44. > :38:52.mean? Two sugars? Maybe it means she is stirring it up. It is difficult,
:38:53. > :38:58.she looks slightly ungainly when she is running. She doesn't look as if
:38:59. > :39:16.she is in a great position. But the strength she elevates and gets out
:39:17. > :39:32.for a bit of it, she does very well. Just three centimetres shy for
:39:33. > :39:43.Reese. We can expect jumps well into the two metre mark from Eaton. A
:39:44. > :39:56.world record? It's awkward, he was a metre down earlier. 1.93 should come
:39:57. > :40:10.easy to him. This looked like it might have been crunched on the
:40:11. > :40:26.plasticine. Did she crowd the board? A huge throw in the shot put. An
:40:27. > :40:35.enormous Thoreau from Tom Walsh. Didn't really get a chance to set it
:40:36. > :40:44.up. 21.6, an area indoor record for the New Zealander. 21.6, how about
:40:45. > :41:01.that? It might be enough to take the gold. Back to be women's long jump
:41:02. > :41:09.-- the. Fireworks have already been let in on this first round, seven
:41:10. > :41:21.metres on the board. Sprinting as she approaches the takeoff board.
:41:22. > :41:41.You get a sense that she mistimed that vary slightly. Looking down the
:41:42. > :41:58.list, nearly a metre and a half ahead of the rest. Just shy of 20
:41:59. > :42:08.metres. The last jumper. Stratton, she has only jumped outdoors in the
:42:09. > :42:25.sunshine of Australia. 22 years of age. Good speed on the runway. She
:42:26. > :42:34.didn't get her hands above her head, and her head tipped forward. You see
:42:35. > :42:38.how quickly the arms come through and forward. If she can keep them
:42:39. > :42:54.above her head, it will slow that forward rotation down. Let's see how
:42:55. > :43:05.the Americans respond to, how they respond to Roberts. This is a much
:43:06. > :43:08.stronger surface than they are used to. They are developing faster and
:43:09. > :43:18.faster services. He is getting used to the indoor speed. It is a much
:43:19. > :43:21.harder for many would have outside. Watching the competitor from Spain,
:43:22. > :43:46.the last event of day one. Followed by a clearance that takes
:43:47. > :43:52.him onto the next height, more work on legs, you don't need that is a
:43:53. > :44:08.multi event performer. He will have two more chances to go clear of that
:44:09. > :44:18.new height. The Brazilian, 18.50 in the first round. Eighth place at the
:44:19. > :44:30.moment, if you want to get involved in the second half of the
:44:31. > :44:42.competition, it is 19.92. Round one of the long jump, Jazmine Sawyers of
:44:43. > :44:47.Great Britain. The season's rest of 6.67. Well, that is beyond six
:44:48. > :44:54.metres. Sawyers, maybe just looking a little tight. That was
:44:55. > :44:58.uncharacteristic for her. I think it was a very un- smooth start.
:44:59. > :45:04.Gathering a bit of nerves, wanting to jump in. Apologies for really
:45:05. > :45:12.jumping around here in terms of the performances that we are showing.
:45:13. > :45:23.The youngster from Poland, a wild one down the right handset. That is
:45:24. > :45:31.the danger of rotation. Getting it slyly mistimed, he knew it, didn't
:45:32. > :45:35.he? -- slightly. We saw that massive jump, well, it looked like a massive
:45:36. > :45:47.jump, it was a foul on the first round. Second attempt. Looking to
:45:48. > :45:51.get a valid jump measured. To take the pressure off. She has done it
:45:52. > :46:06.again. That has got to be way over the board. There looks around 7.5
:46:07. > :46:19.metres. As we watch Curtis Beach. The bar 1.96. Beach joins the group.
:46:20. > :46:28.Much to the pleasure of the Portland crowd. A clean sheet so far for
:46:29. > :46:42.Curtis Beach. Together a fairly solid first day. As we wait for the
:46:43. > :46:50.Romanian. The foul in the first round. It is always tricky, this. Do
:46:51. > :46:55.you try and just what a safe one end or are you wasting an effort? Would
:46:56. > :47:04.you tell her? I think you have to go for it. You have to be in the top
:47:05. > :47:08.eight. We had seen to athletes, one go-to seven metres and 6.97. You
:47:09. > :47:13.need a jump of at least 6.31 to stay the top eight now. So do you put a
:47:14. > :47:21.safe one in? You don't have enough time. It is a gamble, you flip a
:47:22. > :47:37.coin. Tony says go for it, what has run many and done here? I don't
:47:38. > :47:43.suppose you have got much choice. 20.22 in sixth place. Will not
:47:44. > :47:54.improve on that. That is going to be touch and go whether he makes the
:47:55. > :47:59.top eight. Well, the cluttering of the bar for the Portuguese athlete.
:48:00. > :48:06.His second failure at 1.96. He has shown he likes the pressure of the
:48:07. > :48:23.last round. He could do it again. The German. 6.34. In eighth place so
:48:24. > :48:29.far. So, right on the cusp. That cut is so important, the top rate only
:48:30. > :48:37.will impress -- the top eight only will progress. She will need some
:48:38. > :48:42.valuable centimetres to add to that 6.34. She lets loose on this fast
:48:43. > :48:48.track in the Oregon Stadium. What has happened? That looked messy. It
:48:49. > :49:18.is a foul. All right, 15th place. Needs to dig
:49:19. > :49:29.deep in the third round. And it doesn't look like he has. So, he is
:49:30. > :49:35.going home. No. That was three fouls for the Portuguese athlete. Day one
:49:36. > :49:39.of the heptathlon is finished for him. We will up to you with the
:49:40. > :49:44.standings as they come in as the rest of the athletes finished their
:49:45. > :49:49.last performances in that high jump. The fourth event of the heptathlon.
:49:50. > :50:01.That was like a session of speed dating. Not that I have ever been
:50:02. > :50:08.speed dating. So, on to the semifinals of the women's 400
:50:09. > :50:31.metres. Surely, the women first is the field events continue. The first
:50:32. > :50:35.semi-final lines up like this. Qualification isn't too difficult.
:50:36. > :50:39.The first three to go through. You might say, the women's 400 metres is
:50:40. > :51:03.one of the easier events to win a medal here. It is wide open. Not too
:51:04. > :51:06.many favourites. Good lane draw. Little bit inexperienced. The former
:51:07. > :51:15.world junior champion, a lot of talent. The Slovak Republic, missed
:51:16. > :51:21.out on a medal in Prague last year. This young lady here doesn't really
:51:22. > :51:29.impressed that much when she races but she has had a great indoor
:51:30. > :51:44.season. Samantha Edwards and Lane two. -- in lane two. Let's not
:51:45. > :51:54.forget, in the first three through to the final tomorrow. No fastest
:51:55. > :51:57.losers from the two semifinals. Winning is all important because
:51:58. > :52:03.getting a good lane draw in the 400 metres is essential. For those who
:52:04. > :52:19.have lanes five and six, they need to use it. Spencer still learning
:52:20. > :52:26.her craft, particularly in doors for me. But the American Championships,
:52:27. > :52:31.she came through in the latter stages the came past retiring
:52:32. > :52:36.Natasha Hastings to book a spot in the American team. She has a
:52:37. > :52:41.tendency to not go too hard on the first 200 but this time is going in
:52:42. > :52:50.real intent will stop not using the advantage of the outside lane so
:52:51. > :52:54.Spencer. Swift but not too fast through the first 200 and Spencer
:52:55. > :53:04.just controlling things. Tends to one of it wide. Spencer controlling
:53:05. > :53:07.it. Top three only go through. Spencer now starting to move away,
:53:08. > :53:23.she is always strongly in the last 30 or 40 metres and showing her
:53:24. > :53:38.talent here, the American. 52.41 for the American. That was a much better
:53:39. > :53:45.executed race for me. Looking at seven metres on the board. Good
:53:46. > :53:50.jump, got the thumbs up from Tony Minichiello. Must have been good.
:53:51. > :53:55.Just a speech she carries across the board. Very simple. Holds arms above
:53:56. > :54:11.her head, recalls the legs and you get the jump. 6.8. It puts her
:54:12. > :54:14.third. The end of the second round. The bad news from a British
:54:15. > :54:23.perspective is that drops Sawyers down to 10th place with her second
:54:24. > :54:31.round of 6.31. She needs a jump of around about 6.41 or better really.
:54:32. > :54:38.By the time we get to the end of the third round it will probably be
:54:39. > :54:59.around this mark here. Athletes settle in and release some of the
:55:00. > :55:16.nerves. Sawyers... The lead still at seven metres. 6.59 in the first
:55:17. > :55:25.round. 6.57 that was in the second, no improvement.
:55:26. > :55:33.Tom Walsh, to build on that enormous throw. An area record. Here we go in
:55:34. > :55:44.the third. It is another big throw for the big Kiwi. Really coming of
:55:45. > :55:51.age. New Zealand have featured in shot put over the years. Now maybe
:55:52. > :56:15.it is the time of the man. It is Walsh leading the charge. 21.4.
:56:16. > :56:19.Another enormous effort. 6.62 in the first round, looks similar for her.
:56:20. > :56:37.We will up there you with that result. As soon as it is available.
:56:38. > :56:51.6.64 it was, in fourth place. And they have Teflon -- heptathlon.
:56:52. > :56:59.Might be a long shot at this stage. We watched the Belarus in
:57:00. > :57:05.COMMENTATOR: Athlete. Next athlete up is the event leader. I bet she is
:57:06. > :57:09.chomping at the bit to get out on the runway again, having jumped
:57:10. > :57:29.seven metres in the first round. Puts a bit of optimism in you.
:57:30. > :57:34.Second semi-final of the 400 metres. This, perhaps the more difficult of
:57:35. > :57:39.the two semifinals. There really is an open race and anyone who really
:57:40. > :57:45.wants to stamp their authority and Spencer did in the first one, give
:57:46. > :57:58.them chat a good chance of a medal. -- themselves. Perhaps looked best
:57:59. > :58:02.out of the qualifiers here. They looked fairly comfortable. The
:58:03. > :58:13.former Nigeria now running for Bahrain. One silver medal at the
:58:14. > :58:22.world student games last summer. Commonwealth Games champion,
:58:23. > :58:27.MacPherson of Jamaica. She is in lane three here and will have two
:58:28. > :58:45.really perform well and make sure she doesn't get left in lane three
:58:46. > :58:47.in the final. Not the best judged race but managed to hold it
:58:48. > :59:04.together. So McPherson needs to be on the
:59:05. > :59:08.qualification. Hayes on the outside has ability. Not sure if she's
:59:09. > :59:16.fulfilled her full pro-tenial, Hayes.
:59:17. > :59:20.May want to dominate through the first 200m and hold on.
:59:21. > :59:31.Top three through to tomorrow's final.
:59:32. > :59:45.So hays to be shot at. And McPherson will have to make up ground. Lit be
:59:46. > :59:54.hard from lane three. McPherson will have Hayes for
:59:55. > :00:05.company. McPherson trying to get back. 23.91. Qiek through 200. And
:00:06. > :00:12.has Adekoya gone too quick? And Hayes looks krtable.
:00:13. > :00:19.McPherson struggling but Adekoya looks strong. McPherson trying to
:00:20. > :00:23.challenge. Hayes wants to win this, but Adekoya gets it. 51.41. A quick
:00:24. > :00:29.erase that one. Very quick through the first 200m. All three of them
:00:30. > :00:33.were struggle in the last 50, but Adekoya was very strong. Managed to
:00:34. > :00:37.hang on ahid of Hayes. And well, she never looked though
:00:38. > :00:41.she was trying that hard. She's pretty tired. Gave it
:00:42. > :00:45.everything, she knows how important it was to win the semifinal. Wasn't
:00:46. > :00:49.able to do so. It will be the Bahrainian who will have a better
:00:50. > :00:56.draw come the final. You can see there, Hayes just going
:00:57. > :00:58.a little bit wide and Adekoya over by a metre which was telling in the
:00:59. > :01:10.end. Watch this here. Hayes battles hard.
:01:11. > :01:21.Not quite got enough. But they're treading water a little bit here.
:01:22. > :01:32.Just hanging on, you're fighting for that lane draw and that position.
:01:33. > :01:35.Event leader, world leader, Ivana Spanovic of Serbia, 7m exactly in
:01:36. > :01:40.the first round. Round 2. She's earned the right to
:01:41. > :01:46.really charge at this. See what she's capable of.
:01:47. > :01:50.It's another big effort. Around that 7m mark.
:01:51. > :01:57.We will bring that to you in a second as we go across to the
:01:58. > :02:03.Heptahlon. Beech of the United States, big roar
:02:04. > :02:07.from the home -- Beach from the United States, big roar from the
:02:08. > :02:12.home crowd. Big jump. I'm determined to give you that
:02:13. > :02:20.result of Spanovic. It was 6.88 no improvement for her.
:02:21. > :02:25.We look to Brittaney Reec seshgs. -- Reece.
:02:26. > :02:33.Big scream from her, that's unusual. Big foul, though.
:02:34. > :02:36.So just 3cm separating the top two performers in the women's long jump
:02:37. > :02:39.final. The Brits not amongst them yet.
:02:40. > :02:43.After two rounds. Right then, possibly the greatest
:02:44. > :02:49.athlete in the world at the moment, Ashton Eaton. Lovely rhythm, well u
:02:50. > :02:58.cuted. Just makes it look so easy.
:02:59. > :03:05.A new Asian indoor record for Adekoya.
:03:06. > :03:18.McPherson will with be in the final but not with a good lane draw.
:03:19. > :03:47.So full summary of the athletes who made it through to the final.
:03:48. > :03:54.Men's 400, the two semifinals of the men's 400 next on the track.
:03:55. > :04:00.Jonathan Jones of the yunts in 8th place. He gets the first throw of
:04:01. > :04:04.round 4 as they reverse. 8th back to first. In the fourth
:04:05. > :04:09.round. So the second half of the
:04:10. > :04:15.competition continues. They've lost 11 of the 19 initial throwers. His
:04:16. > :04:17.best of the comp so far takes him to 5th place. So good performance for
:04:18. > :04:27.him. Round three of the long jump.
:04:28. > :04:33.Jasmine Sawyers of Great Britain with 6.31 to her name so far, needs
:04:34. > :04:40.a jump in excess of 6.55. And that won't be enough.
:04:41. > :04:45.That won't be enough to take Sayyers through to the second half --
:04:46. > :04:53.Sawyers through to the second half of the final. Disappointment for
:04:54. > :04:58.young Jasmine Sawyers. Lauro saw himself pushed from 7th to
:04:59. > :05:17.8th place. What can he do to respond in nothing.
:05:18. > :05:22.He's in 8th place, he had four throws.
:05:23. > :05:26.Under pressure, as is Kai of Japan, two no jumps. Same applies. 6. 55 or
:05:27. > :05:28.better. Should she want to continue in this
:05:29. > :05:32.long jump final. It's got to be another foul, surely?
:05:33. > :05:46.By about a metre. I wonder what's going on there. Ten
:05:47. > :05:52.out of ten for consistency. I think you're being a bit harsh. I think
:05:53. > :05:56.she struggled on the runways, giving her the benefit of the doubt. She
:05:57. > :05:58.went over the board by over a metre, not having the run-up she would want
:05:59. > :06:09.this week. It's normally small margins, but,
:06:10. > :06:12.yes, landing around 7.5m, she's probably at least a metre beyond the
:06:13. > :06:23.board. Right then. This Heptahlon.
:06:24. > :06:34.It is interesting. The leader, Ashton Eaton way out in front.
:06:35. > :06:39.Second place is Felix of the third place.
:06:40. > :06:45.We watch Brugger there look very happy with that as he should. That's
:06:46. > :06:49.his third attempt to 1.99. He's in 6th place overall as you can
:06:50. > :06:56.see there. I think Steve that was more of a
:06:57. > :06:59.shout of relief. He's a 2.6 jumper and to take three attempts at 2m
:07:00. > :07:04.that will be truss straiting and a waste of energy.
:07:05. > :07:06.Yes, and energy so important, I'm guessing in the multievents to
:07:07. > :07:10.conserve and big day tomorrow, right?
:07:11. > :07:14.I think it takes it out of you. If you look within multievents or high
:07:15. > :07:22.jumping you want to take between 9-15 jumps.
:07:23. > :07:24.You want to try to put them in the right place so you have enough
:07:25. > :07:37.energy for the last height. Bukowiecki then, of Poland. The
:07:38. > :07:47.youngster. He's looking to take the Polish
:07:48. > :07:50.leadership that we saw from the double Olympic champion, his
:07:51. > :08:01.compatriate, who dominated for years this this event.
:08:02. > :08:04.We have a new lad on the block. Iz apologise, we're getting pictures
:08:05. > :08:09.direct interest Portland so not in control to show you the results as
:08:10. > :08:11.they come in. 20.43 for the Pole, no improvement
:08:12. > :08:17.for him. Flat, lacking height? I think it
:08:18. > :08:20.gets into the leg chute a bit early. If she worked the vertical, that is
:08:21. > :08:24.driving the free knee t knee that you see, no t the one on the board,
:08:25. > :08:28.if she drives that, gets the height, then gets into the leg chute. I
:08:29. > :08:33.think she went in early. That gives you that flat look.
:08:34. > :08:38.A little bit anningion maybe? I think so, at 6.34 she knows she
:08:39. > :08:39.needs 6.355 to get the extra two jumps to stay in the competition.
:08:40. > :08:58.Probably rushed it a bit. From a British perspective, Sawyers
:08:59. > :09:03.6.31. We jump around the events. The silver medallist position.
:09:04. > :09:11.A stutter and start. That's messy. Possibly the result of that.
:09:12. > :09:31.The women's long jump that we flash to, we see Walsh for the Brits.
:09:32. > :09:36.# # she will have to improve on that, Martins.
:09:37. > :09:45.Proctor is on the cusp in 8th place. Back on the track, the men's 400m
:09:46. > :09:51.semifinal. Two races.
:09:52. > :10:04.And again first three, no fastest losers making it through to the
:10:05. > :10:09.final. In someways it makes it nice and
:10:10. > :10:12.clean and tidy. To be fair with, certainly the women's, you wouldn't
:10:13. > :10:13.have argued about the final. But the men may look at the strength of the
:10:14. > :10:37.two races. Taplin, the fastest man indoors is
:10:38. > :10:40.in lane 6. Interesting field here, because the
:10:41. > :10:46.Kenyan, let's go around the other way. Taplin first. Not sure about
:10:47. > :10:50.Taplin. You see the talent that he has and Grenada of course amaszing a
:10:51. > :10:57.good relay squad as well. Led by James.
:10:58. > :11:01.Taplin has beaten him. Lendore, the team-mate of this man
:11:02. > :11:05.here. They are the three quickest in the world. Taplin, Gordon and
:11:06. > :11:13.Lendore, who have all run 45.5 and under.
:11:14. > :11:23.I thought this man here, Mweresa looked good in qualitiation.
:11:24. > :11:30.High expectations. He's got quicker every race he's run the Kenyans.
:11:31. > :11:33.There is Brenes, in 2012, his year, he had a big race against the
:11:34. > :11:41.emerging James back then. Got a good lane in the final.
:11:42. > :11:44.And then two years ago Kyle Clemons won a bronze and then a gold in a
:11:45. > :12:03.new world record in the 4 X4. So Mweresa of Kenya is in lane 4,
:12:04. > :12:05.and then Lendore and Taplin. The fastest man in the world indoors
:12:06. > :12:19.this year on the outside. Three men on the outside. So bright
:12:20. > :12:21.young talents in, becoming a really competitive event, of course, great
:12:22. > :12:31.event outdoors last year. Lendore may be standing up out of
:12:32. > :12:34.the blocks with Taplin away quickly. Lendore trying to close him down.
:12:35. > :12:38.The Kenyan, and Mweresa, trying to get on terms with the two through
:12:39. > :12:43.the first 200m. Taplin likes to control this. He's run it hard
:12:44. > :12:49.through the first 200. Right on the inside, Clemons, the American, is
:12:50. > :12:53.trying to make up for this. His team-mate got disqualitied in the
:12:54. > :12:58.heats. He's got work to do, Clemons. So top three don't forget. So Taplin
:12:59. > :13:02.out there. Lendore moving, he wants to make the others run wide and
:13:03. > :13:05.Clemons is trying to get around him. But out in front, Taplin all the
:13:06. > :13:12.way, looking dominant. Looking strong. Moves away. Real strap on
:13:13. > :13:19.for third. And Lendore hangs on and Mweresa then taking the third spot.
:13:20. > :13:27.A tough semifinal there with Brenes and Clemons not going through. The
:13:28. > :13:33.men in the outside three lane s if you don't get a draw on the outside
:13:34. > :13:41.lanes it will make it tough. Now Mr Ashton Eaton in the high jump, the
:13:42. > :13:43.Heptathlon. Ashton then the first athlete to
:13:44. > :13:54.atrement the height beyond 2m. Oh no.
:13:55. > :14:01.Not quite what we expected. He's been flawless so far pretty much.
:14:02. > :14:08.Tom Walsh with the huge 21.60 in the fourth round. A big shout and a big
:14:09. > :14:15.throw. Another throw beyond 21m, he put together an incredible series
:14:16. > :14:19.here. He's fast, balanced, found his
:14:20. > :14:27.rhythm and balance. He's building on that big throw.
:14:28. > :14:33.It is an improvement to 21.64. No male Kiwi has ever taken a world
:14:34. > :14:41.indoor title and Walsh looks on his way to doing that.
:14:42. > :14:48.Back o the long jump. Deloach of the States.
:14:49. > :14:52.Decent jump from her. Slightly untidy on landing. We're in
:14:53. > :14:56.the third round, so same as we've seen already, oh, it's a foul.
:14:57. > :15:04.Shame. That was a big jump.
:15:05. > :15:22.Won't be measured. So then, just what, four athletes with another
:15:23. > :15:27.jump. At the moment the Great Britain
:15:28. > :15:32.athletes are in 5th and 8th. Proctor is in 8th but has one more jump
:15:33. > :15:37.remaining as we move to the Heptahlon. We saw Eaton knock the
:15:38. > :15:48.bar off. He's in the silver medal position.
:15:49. > :15:54.Knocks it off. Felix went clear as did Brugger of
:15:55. > :15:59.Germany. Very impressive running from Taplin.
:16:00. > :16:05.That's quick. You can see how much distance there was between him and
:16:06. > :16:07.Lendore and Mweresa, who makes it through to the season's best in the
:16:08. > :16:34.finals, continuing to improve. It's Mironchyk-Ivanova of Belarus.
:16:35. > :16:35.She was one centimetre shot in the third round. Looks almost identical
:16:36. > :16:54.again. Bach, a lot of jumps this afternoon,
:16:55. > :16:58.he nailed that, Beach. Spanovic, 7m event leader. That
:16:59. > :17:04.looks better. Will it be a white flag? No.
:17:05. > :17:10.A big jump, though. Be interesting to see how much this
:17:11. > :17:15.encroaches the Plasticine. They were about to inspect that. Looks like
:17:16. > :17:19.Spanovic has brought some fantastic form, giving everyone something to
:17:20. > :17:26.think about going into an Olympic summer.
:17:27. > :17:38.He had the lead at the early stages, that's very much in the hands of Tom
:17:39. > :17:39.Walsh of New Zealand now, though. He's the Romanian, in second place.
:17:40. > :17:54.A succession of fouls. Ahston Eaton, second attempt.
:17:55. > :17:58.No! Surprising. What you making of that, Tony? Frnths just as he comes
:17:59. > :18:01.off the curb, he's pulling his rite arm into his bowie and dropping the
:18:02. > :18:03.right shoulder which is pulling him into the bar. He needs to stay away,
:18:04. > :18:25.keep the Maslak, the defending champion from
:18:26. > :18:38.Czech Republic, he goes in lane 6. Men's 400, much more competitive
:18:39. > :18:42.than the women's event and lots of familiar names and Maslak the man to
:18:43. > :18:50.beat. He has his arm bands back on, left them in the call-up room this
:18:51. > :18:55.morning. His trademark arm bands in his national colours. He looks very
:18:56. > :19:00.relaxed but he's going to have to be at his best here, because this young
:19:01. > :19:05.man here, Haroun from Qatar, still in, still a teenager. Again, very
:19:06. > :19:11.impressive. Taplin looks good, Maslak looks
:19:12. > :19:15.good, but Haroun is certainly capable, I think, of causing, it
:19:16. > :19:22.wouldn't be an unset because he's been running well all year. Gordon
:19:23. > :19:25.of Trinidad Tobago who came to the championships as the second fastest
:19:26. > :19:29.in the world. We will have to make sure he
:19:30. > :19:40.performs well to get to the final here.
:19:41. > :19:51.Can of Turkey, he's in lane three. Dunkley of Jamaica.
:19:52. > :19:54.And then Alonzo Russell, won a silver in the Commonwealth Games in
:19:55. > :20:00.Glasgow in the relay. He won for the Bahamas.
:20:01. > :20:04.Well, there is Gordon, he won a good 300 and 200 this year, only beaten
:20:05. > :20:07.by Taplin before these championships. I suspect that's
:20:08. > :20:11.because he hasn't raced either of these two here, Haroun and Maslak,
:20:12. > :20:16.and Maslak got the better lane, but Haroun is a quick starter as well.
:20:17. > :20:23.He can get out there and control the two of them.
:20:24. > :20:28.They race each other too much in the first 200.
:20:29. > :20:34.Top three to go through, winning this semifinal so important. They
:20:35. > :20:38.got a very, very good start. Quickest out of the blocks. A yard
:20:39. > :20:42.on Haroun, Maslak started quickly on the outside. These three, already
:20:43. > :20:47.pulling away from the rest. Gordon giving himself plenty of wide run-in
:20:48. > :20:52.to that bend. This tall figure getting around. Not steep curves
:20:53. > :20:56.here, but Haroun can't hold off Maslak, who cuts across, loses a
:20:57. > :21:01.metre or so, loses a bit of momentum, that could be critical for
:21:02. > :21:03.Haroun. Trying to get back on terms with Maslak, who's controlling this.
:21:04. > :21:08.Gordon can't keep with these two. Maslak comes around the top bend
:21:09. > :21:12.now, can he hold off Haroun? Gordon getting closer, top three, don't
:21:13. > :21:15.forget. Maslak moves out. Make them run further, Haroun is coming up,
:21:16. > :21:23.finishing strongly, Haroun just about. Well, I'm going to say get
:21:24. > :21:25.there, did he get there? The chest of Maslak still protruding as they
:21:26. > :21:30.crossed the line. He may have hung on. Be close to see, he thinks he
:21:31. > :21:34.did it, he may well be right. Haroun, strong, but you've gt to
:21:35. > :21:39.say, just lost a bit of momentum. He wanted to get in the front. You can
:21:40. > :21:43.see why. And these two certainly gave Gordon
:21:44. > :21:45.no chance of getting involved at the front.
:21:46. > :21:49.Little handshake there, and Maslak knows if he's going to win the gold
:21:50. > :21:53.medal, he's going to have to do something similar come the final. Yo
:21:54. > :21:58.u have to get in front here and try to control it.
:21:59. > :22:02.Great, Steve, you've seen both the semis, the first three are the
:22:03. > :22:06.people in six, five and four t top lanes, that I are the faster lanes,
:22:07. > :22:11.you have more speed, you have to get to the bell first. That's why these
:22:12. > :22:16.guys are fighting hard. So I would suspect when it comes to seeding the
:22:17. > :22:20.two winners would get six and five and then the seb onned it would be
:22:21. > :22:23.an even draw for lanes four and three if you were in second place,
:22:24. > :22:26.so that might be the difference between the medal f you got lane
:22:27. > :22:29.three or four. Well, there wasn't any difference
:22:30. > :22:34.between the two of them here in terms of times, they've been given
:22:35. > :22:37.45. 71. A little slow, almost half a second slower than Taplin in the
:22:38. > :22:46.first semifinal. Three good contenders.
:22:47. > :22:51.Round five of the shot putt. Tom Walsh of noourz. Hung effort,
:22:52. > :22:57.another big throw -- New Zealand, huge effort, another big throw from
:22:58. > :23:01.him. His fourth throw beyond 21m. He's limping slightly, smiling
:23:02. > :23:06.though, he's enjoying it. Tid he save it? He's done well
:23:07. > :23:10.there. You see the red flag. Started a raise and he put it back
:23:11. > :23:15.down. He looked like he was going over as we go back.
:23:16. > :23:21.We're in the Heptahlon high jump. Kasyanov.
:23:22. > :23:27.2m 02 looking like it's too much for him. It is. That's his third and
:23:28. > :23:34.final failure at that height. 3,420 points on day one. Ashton
:23:35. > :23:39.Eaton needs this to keep his world record dream alive. 2.02. Final
:23:40. > :23:42.attempt for the world Olympic champion. No.
:23:43. > :23:47.Oh, he knows. He was capable of that.
:23:48. > :23:56.Best in the high jump, 1.99, his day's work is done, as we go to
:23:57. > :24:03.Wester. This is significant in the long jump from a British perspective
:24:04. > :24:08.as much as it is hers. Because Italy's a jump that mite not --
:24:09. > :24:09.knock Proctor, the world silver medallist, out of the come pe
:24:10. > :24:31.petition. That jump takes her to fifth place.
:24:32. > :24:37.That means Proctor is in 8th place. She does survive.
:24:38. > :24:41.That was the conclusion of the third round, so two Brits are in the
:24:42. > :24:45.second half of the wum's long jump final.
:24:46. > :25:00.Result of an extremely competitive second semifinal.
:25:01. > :25:07.Qualifiers for the men's 400. Taplin looks like daylight between himself
:25:08. > :25:12.and Maslak and Haroun, it will be about lane draw and who gets to the
:25:13. > :25:14.front first in the, on the first 200m when that final is run
:25:15. > :25:24.tomorrow. Adrei Gag, the penultimate throw of
:25:25. > :25:32.the competition, the man to stop Walsh taking gold. It's not enough.
:25:33. > :25:35.20.89 in the first round, Gag looks pleased with the silver medal.
:25:36. > :25:39.Lifetime best indoors for him. Great performance.
:25:40. > :25:46.Possibly against the form when you look at the season's best. So it's
:25:47. > :25:49.this man then, Tom wall ssh. Four throws over 21. Let's have another!
:25:50. > :25:53.CHEERING Maybe his best.
:25:54. > :26:01.Maybe his best of the whole cop petition.
:26:02. > :26:07.A bring yant series of throws. 21.60 in round 2, 21.40 in round 3,
:26:08. > :26:12.21.64, a lifetime best, an area record in round 4.
:26:13. > :26:15.21.49 in five. What is this in the last round? The last throw of the
:26:16. > :26:20.competition, he's got the gold medal.
:26:21. > :26:28.It's a world-leading throw. What a way to finish. 21.78. Tom Wa will,
:26:29. > :26:34.sh for the first time ever, New Zealand have won a gold medal in the
:26:35. > :26:39.men's Indoor World Championships. Great performance for Tom Walsh.
:26:40. > :26:45.Congratulations from the rest of the guys. He's not the tallest, you can
:26:46. > :26:53.see the big men around him. Shows you what a bit of balance,
:26:54. > :26:57.poise and athleticism can do. Really impressive performance.
:26:58. > :26:58.Not only in that world leading mark, the pressure, but also the series he
:26:59. > :27:10.put in. Czech Republic.
:27:11. > :27:15.Czech leader. Helcelet.
:27:16. > :27:26.So Helcelet, first failure of the afternoon. 2.05.
:27:27. > :27:33.Too much for him at the first attempt. All about points in the
:27:34. > :27:41.Heptahlon accumulated over two days. What a wonderful scene. Tom Walsh
:27:42. > :27:46.nearly made the rostrum in Beijing in the outdoor version of this, last
:27:47. > :27:50.summer, came fourth. But this time good enough for gold.
:27:51. > :28:06.The biggest smile so far of the world championships.
:28:07. > :28:19.Proctor, third attempt. Well a big shout as she landed
:28:20. > :28:28.there. It sounded like it knocked the wind out of her. No jump.
:28:29. > :28:34.Mathias Brugger, back to the Heptahlon. 2.05. Took off a long way
:28:35. > :28:43.away there. A foul for him.
:28:44. > :28:46.Steve don't you think, going ba k to the men's shot put, the idea was
:28:47. > :28:51.they would have the last four throws and focus, did that really happen?
:28:52. > :28:54.I'm hoping it did in the stadium, whether we captured that in the
:28:55. > :28:57.pictures we're being shown here. We're not in control of them.
:28:58. > :29:02.It's hard to know how they feature that in the stadium. I heed like to
:29:03. > :29:08.think the announcement you can hear there, the PA system, will have
:29:09. > :29:12.showcased those four attempts, in particularly Tom Walsh, superb
:29:13. > :29:16.performance. An incredible number of throws, five
:29:17. > :29:24.over 21m. A great competitor. Last round.
:29:25. > :29:28.In the record books there, it was his last throw in 2014 to take
:29:29. > :29:32.bronze. That shows the metal of the man.
:29:33. > :29:36.Great competitor. And also has the distances to match.
:29:37. > :29:41.He's going to be a contender come Rio, too, the confidence that the
:29:42. > :29:46.World Indoor Title will bring him, is considerable.
:29:47. > :29:55.Undoubtedly as we watch Balta in the long jump.
:29:56. > :30:00.So we started the fourth round. That foul of Proctor, so no
:30:01. > :30:11.improvement. Proctor is in 8th place as we go to Beayh in the heptathlon.
:30:12. > :30:18.Curtis Beach currently in 4th place. He knows if he can muster up another
:30:19. > :30:23.season's best, he's got one already in 2.02. If he can go clear on the
:30:24. > :30:27.third and final attempt, he may get in amongst the medals.
:30:28. > :30:34.Got a decent second day. He's got a good endurance as well as speed,
:30:35. > :30:39.unusually for a decathlete, or multieventer I should say.
:30:40. > :30:43.Right then, Lorraine Uggen. Improved in the third round in the fourth
:30:44. > :30:47.round. If it's going to happen, it's got to be happening very soon
:30:48. > :30:52.indeed. I think that's a foul. Indeed, it
:30:53. > :30:55.is. Lorraine Ugen, disappointing in the
:30:56. > :31:00.fourth round. Two jumps remaining, if she can get
:31:01. > :31:06.in the top four. Helcelet of Czech Republic.
:31:07. > :31:17.I think that's fairly clear what he thought of that.
:31:18. > :31:25.6.75 is the fourth place mark, that's what the girls are looking
:31:26. > :31:29.for Proctor and Ugen, one more jump each. A jump of 6.76 for one more
:31:30. > :31:37.jump for a medal. Yes, a medal looks a long way off.
:31:38. > :31:42.Wester improved every round so far. 6.67.
:31:43. > :31:46.Just sense that there may be more to come from Wester.
:31:47. > :31:48.Starts gently on the approach, but then gets quick.
:31:49. > :31:59.A good acceleration into the board. Quick inspection of the Plasticine.
:32:00. > :32:07.She hit the board, we could hear that. Maybe an improvement for her.
:32:08. > :32:12.Oh, decent, 14-plus centimetres to spare.
:32:13. > :32:18.6.59. No improvement. Third and final attempt for Felix.
:32:19. > :32:22.Oh, he's made that look easy. That's the height you were talking about
:32:23. > :32:27.early. Get that upward drive, good example of it there from Felix.
:32:28. > :32:34.Brugger looking to match that, yes, he does.
:32:35. > :32:42.Do you think he's happy there? Eaton had to watch this. I think
:32:43. > :32:47.he's pleased with that. Third and final attempt, pressure jump. His
:32:48. > :32:51.personal best is 2.06, he's close there. Now he will get two more
:32:52. > :32:58.attempts at a personal best at 2.808.
:32:59. > :33:01.Con plach -- 2.08. Congratulations for Brugger of
:33:02. > :33:14.Germany in 6th overall in the fourth event of the 7 in the heptathlon.
:33:15. > :33:22.The men continue in the heptathlon. Final event of the women's
:33:23. > :33:43.heptathlon, culminating in the 800m, a long day. Manufacture A tough day.
:33:44. > :33:49.Came here are high expectations but every competition is about
:33:50. > :33:53.experience. The 800m coming up shortly. This
:33:54. > :34:01.women's long jump final coming to a climax.
:34:02. > :34:06.We know this is a foul, the suggestion is it is a long one. It
:34:07. > :34:17.is. It won't be measured. Doesn't matter.
:34:18. > :34:25.The athletes are introduced for the 800m.
:34:26. > :34:32.In the bronze medal position, you've seen Tyson.
:34:33. > :34:48.She is in a dominant position for the
:34:49. > :34:55.Nwaba coming out, stretching there. Leffler.
:34:56. > :35:13.A good talent from Germany. There is Fo
:35:14. > :35:15.Fodorova will be looking ahead. We would expect Eaton to be ahead of
:35:16. > :35:35.her. And there's Ellenwood.
:35:36. > :35:39.So here is Morgan Lake, maybe not the day she would have liked but if
:35:40. > :35:42.she could muster a personal best, she could still look at the junior
:35:43. > :35:57.record. Probably a tall ask to run a big PB
:35:58. > :36:00.at the end of what's been obviously a day which, I think really at the
:36:01. > :36:10.beginning it's been nearly there. Let's break up. Spanovic in the long
:36:11. > :36:17.jump. 7m that jum np the first round out in front for Spanovic. Another
:36:18. > :36:21.good effort from her. Looks like she will lead the competition from gun
:36:22. > :36:27.to tape. We're in the fourth fourth round. She concludes the fourth
:36:28. > :36:32.round. Going back to Morgan Lake quickly.
:36:33. > :36:34.It was 8.70 in the hurdles. That was the one where high jump is a good
:36:35. > :36:52.event. They asking her to run a seb onned
:36:53. > :36:56.quicker, she seems to be in form. She seems to be in shape.
:36:57. > :37:01.So it's a distinct possibility. My only concern is there's 12 ladies in
:37:02. > :37:04.the race, lit be a bit crowded. Can you get past people when you want to
:37:05. > :37:15.inject that pace. Don't be polite.
:37:16. > :37:22.There is a question of whether or not she can really take out the
:37:23. > :37:27.young American talent. Williams in 5th at the moment.
:37:28. > :37:30.266 points behind the leader. ANNOUNCER: On your marks.
:37:31. > :37:34.The final event of the women's pent at lon.
:37:35. > :37:38.They're pushing at the beginning, trying to find a position.
:37:39. > :37:44.Then settled down. Lake just having her elbows out,
:37:45. > :37:51.moving around the outside. Nwaba goes to the front.
:37:52. > :37:56.I think you know it's always about judgement and trying to be
:37:57. > :38:00.ambitious, but not be silly in the 8 u00m as well. You can get it
:38:01. > :38:03.horribly wrong if you go out a bit too hard. She's got to attack this
:38:04. > :38:08.as much as she can. 30 seconds toer the leader. Tie son Eaton getting a
:38:09. > :38:11.nice ride through that first 200m and a bit of a gap developing to the
:38:12. > :38:17.pack. Yes, I think if you look at her
:38:18. > :38:22.she's going for it. She's trying to run, Brianne as quick as she can, to
:38:23. > :38:25.set up a 2.10 personal best, though that's outdoors sheshgs will be
:38:26. > :38:28.looking to go through. Let's look at what the split time is as she comes
:38:29. > :38:32.around. I will probably be much quicker than she should have based
:38:33. > :38:41.it at. She is probably going to pay the price later.
:38:42. > :38:45.So tie son probably closest to 65 seconds to the leader.
:38:46. > :38:50.So, yes, she's going for it. It's a question of whether or not she can
:38:51. > :38:53.hang on here. And at least put some decent distance for the two
:38:54. > :38:59.Ukrainians, certainly in terms of the goad medal. Mokhnyuk looking
:39:00. > :39:03.safe, but Fodorova and that three seconds or three-and-a-half seconds,
:39:04. > :39:06.that tie son Eaton, if she could move to the silver, the one she held
:39:07. > :39:11.before, outdoors and indoors. Not what she would have wanted coming
:39:12. > :39:16.here, but she's going for it, 200m to two go.
:39:17. > :39:22.The question is can she speed up, when you hear the bell you get
:39:23. > :39:26.excitement. It's usually the third lap you see heptathletes slowing
:39:27. > :39:32.down. But you see her picking up the pace.
:39:33. > :39:37.Eaton will be running for the silver. Have to wait to see what's
:39:38. > :39:42.happening behind, Fodorova a long way behind, good 4-5 seconds. So
:39:43. > :39:48.Eaton hangs on for the win. 2.10, good performance. Nwaba says well
:39:49. > :39:53.done. A real scrap on after that. Look at the clock there, there's ten
:39:54. > :39:58.seconds, Lake crossing the line outside of the world record
:39:59. > :40:03.required. She needed 2.17.8, I reckon she was probably around 2.20.
:40:04. > :40:07.Still a pretty solid day for Morgan Lake. We start to tidy up the
:40:08. > :40:11.positions. The question is, tie son Eaton, you've got to hand it to her,
:40:12. > :40:18.certainly would have moved to the silver medal. Theisen Eaton. It was
:40:19. > :40:23.a massive group. Look at Ashton Iaton, he's holding his hands on his
:40:24. > :40:28.head, she's not sure. A bigger gap than she would have anticipated.
:40:29. > :40:32.Maybe back o to 2.22 for the Ukrainian.
:40:33. > :40:36.I think at that level you've got around 15 points a second. So ten
:40:37. > :40:41.seconds, it's 150 points potentially. So let's see what she's
:40:42. > :40:43.done. This is the agonising wait, just waiting for the scoreboard to
:40:44. > :40:54.come up and give you that result. No other event has this tension. No
:40:55. > :40:57.other event has that agonising wait as Tony put it. You cross the line,
:40:58. > :41:04.you normally know what you've done. She must think she's won the gold.
:41:05. > :41:11.Even she is not sure. And... Just waiting for Thiesen Eaton's score.
:41:12. > :41:16.She's got for that 965 points. Total 4,881. The question is, as we scroll
:41:17. > :41:19.and we're waiting on the computer to go further down in terms of time,
:41:20. > :41:22.she's getting a thumbs up, but no-one can tell her, because it's
:41:23. > :41:26.certainly not come up on the computer yet.
:41:27. > :41:31.This is the confusing thing. They will add the points and you will see
:41:32. > :41:37.a points out along the computer, based on where you finished in the
:41:38. > :41:42.race. They check the time and allocate the points. The total then
:41:43. > :41:49.comes up. So you're waiting, we're waiting to see what 2.20 is giving
:41:50. > :41:54.the Ukrainian girl. So Fodorova we can fell you she was
:41:55. > :41:59.the quickest of the two Ukrainians and her time coming up.
:42:00. > :42:05.But who's won the gold medal here? What an anxious wait.
:42:06. > :42:10.All of them watching, Ashton Eaton watching a cheer is going up, but
:42:11. > :42:16.not for this. Who did it?
:42:17. > :42:21.Is it me? Theisen Eaton will win the
:42:22. > :42:27.heptathlon. She wins the gold. What a performance from her in the 800m.
:42:28. > :42:30.She's snatched the gold from the Ukrainians. Her hauz band, the first
:42:31. > :42:35.to come and congratulate her. What a moment.
:42:36. > :42:38.For these two. He's had his gold medals.
:42:39. > :42:42.In is her first. Her first global title.
:42:43. > :42:46.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Goodness me, does she deserve it for
:42:47. > :42:51.that performance in the final event. It looked like it was a lead.
:42:52. > :42:57.It looked like it was a lead that could not be witled away. Could
:42:58. > :43:01.she... Create enough gap between herself and the Ukrainians? We're
:43:02. > :43:07.waiting for confirmation. Thanks for helping me.
:43:08. > :43:13.4,847 points. That's for Mokhnyuk.
:43:14. > :43:18.But winning the gold medal, this young lady here, scrapping and you
:43:19. > :43:22.have to say, that Nwaba helped her, someone to chase, someone to fight.
:43:23. > :43:27.She found that extra half a second or so, that has won her the gold
:43:28. > :43:31.medal. Be honest, heptathletes Ly before this race, people talk to
:43:32. > :43:35.each other, what are u yo going to do, this is what I need how are you
:43:36. > :43:38.going to run. They know what they're going to run. There's a bit of
:43:39. > :43:41.collusion. But not in a bad way, but you know what people are going to
:43:42. > :43:45.run, she's hung on to her coat tails.
:43:46. > :43:51.Well, Steve, you've been following this event all day. And Theisen
:43:52. > :43:54.Eaton, you could tell she was doubting it. She said I've done my
:43:55. > :44:00.bit, but surely they were close enough. There was a big, big gap.
:44:01. > :44:06.There's confirmation. Great performance for Theisen Eaton,
:44:07. > :44:10.that's heart for me, want. This is the desire, this is where she
:44:11. > :44:15.nurtured her talent. A bit of pride in that run over 800m.
:44:16. > :44:20.Gold for Canada. Great performance.
:44:21. > :44:25.A worthy champion as we look back to this long jump finals, still some
:44:26. > :44:35.action. Brittaney Reese. Spanovic in the
:44:36. > :44:41.lead, and Reece likes that, her best so far, 6.97. She jumped 6.88 in the
:44:42. > :44:47.previous round. This may threaten the lead of Spanovic.
:44:48. > :44:55.Just as we wait to see the measurement, it looks as though
:44:56. > :44:59.Reece has given Spanovic something to think about in the penultimate
:45:00. > :45:05.round. Look at that, exactly the same. 7m exactly. Goes into the lead
:45:06. > :45:12.on countback with her 6.97. Wow. What a great performance.
:45:13. > :45:18.Lorraine Ugen. The 5th round.
:45:19. > :45:22.That's better. That's very much better for Lorraine
:45:23. > :45:26.Ugen. Struggled to maybe find her form in
:45:27. > :45:32.the early rounds but has improved by a fraction of centimetres, a jump of
:45:33. > :45:39.6.93 for Lorraine Ugen. She's gone right up into third place.
:45:40. > :45:44.But this is Spanovic looking to respond, it's all kicking off in the
:45:45. > :45:54.5th round of the long jump. Good atmosphere, maybe as a result of
:45:55. > :45:58.Theisen Eaton's performance. Spanovic pushed into second.
:45:59. > :46:09.She's gone back into the lead? Looks like she knows. 7.7.
:46:10. > :46:18.That's a new world leading mark. Absolutely superb performance for
:46:19. > :46:24.Spanovic. That jump or Lorraine Ugen matches the British record of 6.93
:46:25. > :46:28.exactly the same mark of Johnson-Thompson, 6. 93 from last
:46:29. > :46:32.year. Well, this showcase in the last
:46:33. > :46:36.round, the top four athletes, will get one more jump and Lorraine Ugen
:46:37. > :46:42.of Great Britain is one of them. She's currently in third place.
:46:43. > :46:52.7cm behind the silver and 14cm behind that jump. The world leading
:46:53. > :46:59.mark of Spanovic. There are the pentatheletes.
:47:00. > :47:03.And Morgan Lake ended up with 36 points away from the indoor record
:47:04. > :47:09.held since 2002. The good strong run from her in the 800m. Goodness me,
:47:10. > :47:15.the Canadian flag being carried by a very, very proud Theisen Eaton. It's
:47:16. > :47:19.a great thing to see, but it's also for me anyway it's what makes the
:47:20. > :47:24.multievent so enthralling right until the very end and that
:47:25. > :47:29.agonising wait as you try to find out, did I do enough? Did they
:47:30. > :47:33.finish close enough to me? Did I muster enough points?
:47:34. > :47:37.What a story. I think if you are the Ukrainian
:47:38. > :47:43.girl you've got to be kicking yourself. To run 2.20, you have a PB
:47:44. > :47:47.of around, let me check my notes, she's got a personal best of 2.16.
:47:48. > :47:52.You only needed two seconds, 2.18 and you would have held on to your
:47:53. > :47:55.gold. It may be they thought it was too big a margin for her to catch.
:47:56. > :48:00.It looked like they came from the power end of the spectrum.
:48:01. > :48:11.And that makes it hard to run. It shows you if you don't perform to
:48:12. > :48:15.a level where you should in one of the five events, it will affect the
:48:16. > :48:21.score overall. As we see, Felix go clear at 2.11.
:48:22. > :48:25.Lorraine Ugen in third place. This is the last round of the long
:48:26. > :48:31.jump. That was quick on the approach.
:48:32. > :48:37.She's matched the British record. In the penultimate round.
:48:38. > :48:41.This the last round, another long way into the sand pit.
:48:42. > :48:47.Finally found her form. She struggled slightly in the earlier
:48:48. > :48:55.rounds, it is a valid jump. Finally got her rhythm going.
:48:56. > :49:03.6. 86. It's another good effort, may come away with a bronze medal.
:49:04. > :49:11.It's De Loach -- Deloach who can deprive her of that, you can see 8cm
:49:12. > :49:18.short of Lorraine Ugen. So Britain maybe has it first medal from these
:49:19. > :49:22.world indoor championships. Deloach of the United States can
:49:23. > :49:27.stop that happening with this very jump.
:49:28. > :49:33.6.93 or better. Deloach quick on the approach. A
:49:34. > :49:43.huge effort. An enormous jump.
:49:44. > :49:50.We have no idea who that is on the board. If it's a valid jump it looks
:49:51. > :49:54.like it's the end of the brondz medal chat around Ugen's jump. If
:49:55. > :50:08.that was her foot, it's a valid jump.
:50:09. > :50:14.Heptathlon 800m wait was here. Of the quickfire rounds, quick
:50:15. > :50:17.measurements, they're double checking here for some reason. It
:50:18. > :50:27.looked good on the board. Brilliant performance. If this is what it
:50:28. > :50:36.looked like beyond 7m, let's remind you, 7.07 Spanovic, and 6.93 Ugen
:50:37. > :50:43.and Reece as well. But this jump... As we wait anxiously, Ugen in the
:50:44. > :50:48.background, packing up her stuff, she can do something nothing, her
:50:49. > :50:55.fate is sealed. It's in hands of the officials to measure Janay DeLoach.
:50:56. > :51:01.Well... Can't believe we've gone away from that anxious moments as we
:51:02. > :51:05.watch Felix. We knock him -- we watch him knock the bar off.
:51:06. > :51:12.Hopefully we go straight back. 6.89 it is for DeLoach, a season's
:51:13. > :51:18.best but not enough to stop Lorraine Ugen take the bronze medal. Great
:51:19. > :51:23.performance for Lorraine Ugen. 6.93 in the 5th round. Two athletes
:51:24. > :51:28.remain, but they're already ahead of her.
:51:29. > :51:33.Reese in the silver spot. Olympic champion from 2012. Went into the
:51:34. > :51:38.lead in the fifth momentarily for seconds before it was pulled back in
:51:39. > :51:47.favour of the Serbian, Spanovic. Only these two remain. Reese and
:51:48. > :51:54.Spanovic, what's it to be? Reese you need to jump in excess of 7.7cm if
:51:55. > :51:58.you want to upgrade your silver to a gold.
:51:59. > :52:04.She is attacking this hard. Quick, that's enormous!
:52:05. > :52:10.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Reese looks like she saved her best
:52:11. > :52:17.for the last round. She knows it. She doesn't need to
:52:18. > :52:23.look back. Surely that goes into the lead.
:52:24. > :52:26.But Spanovic has another jump and the chance to respond, perfect on
:52:27. > :52:34.the board, with space. Big cheer from the crowd, they know.
:52:35. > :52:40.Nothing on our scoreboard. 7.22, a new world-leading mark.
:52:41. > :52:44.But it's not a gold medal yet. My word. What a jump.
:52:45. > :52:55.What an enormous effort. Spanovic, then, has led for the
:52:56. > :52:58.majority of this competition, responded well when she saw Reese
:52:59. > :53:10.take the lead. She's seen a world-leading mark of
:53:11. > :53:13.7.22, just one centimetre short of her own championship record she set
:53:14. > :53:17.in winning this title. Four years ago.
:53:18. > :53:21.Spanovic. 7.22.
:53:22. > :53:29.Twiflted in the air, not going to be enough.
:53:30. > :53:31.Ooh, that's agonising. Brilliant performance for Reese.
:53:32. > :53:44.Gold for USA. Brilliant performance. Absolutely
:53:45. > :53:48.superb effort. Last round, that showcase, it worked well, certainly
:53:49. > :53:53.in favour of the home advantage for the Americans.
:53:54. > :54:00.Huge effort. And Britain's first medal.
:54:01. > :54:08.Superb from Lorraine Ugen. A great jump there at 6.93 to get the bronze
:54:09. > :54:16.medal. A really superb jump. How Reese responded there, 7.22.
:54:17. > :54:22.Exactly as she did four years ago, 7.23 in the last round in Istanbul
:54:23. > :54:26.of the world indoors. A carbon copy here in Portland, 2016.
:54:27. > :54:33.All of the excitement in the field and a couple of great events, like
:54:34. > :54:38.women's long jump. Now we have two track finals
:54:39. > :54:43.beginning, well, first up the women's 60m hurdles.
:54:44. > :54:49.We've had one medal from Lorraine Ugen in the long jump, can Porter or
:54:50. > :54:53.Solomon come away with a medal in the 60 hurdles final? Men's 60m
:54:54. > :54:58.after that. That will be the conclusion of what's been an
:54:59. > :55:03.exciting evening in Portland. Introductions now.
:55:04. > :55:15.Solomon of Great Britain from Bromley.
:55:16. > :55:24.White wiet got through as the fastest loser by a couple of
:55:25. > :55:32.thousand sandzs of a second. Ivancevic made a new Croatian record
:55:33. > :55:42.this year to make it to the final. The quickest woman in the world
:55:43. > :55:47.indoors this year, will be introduced next, the Americans have
:55:48. > :55:55.high hopes in this event. Brianna Rollins.
:55:56. > :56:06.Only fourth last year, but she will hope for the gold here.
:56:07. > :56:09.What about her team-mate, Kendra Harrison, only beaten by 100th of a
:56:10. > :56:16.second. Less than that.
:56:17. > :56:21.The defending champion, Ali, from the USA.
:56:22. > :56:32.Only Jones has defended this title. Porter would like to win the gold,
:56:33. > :56:45.she has a bronze. She will need to improve significantly.
:56:46. > :56:50.A surprise brondz outdoors for Talay and she has brought that form here.
:56:51. > :57:03.But she's in lane 8. USA so well represented here.
:57:04. > :57:09.Rollins, Harrison, Ali, Porter and Solomon for Great Britain.
:57:10. > :57:14.And then outdoor medallist Talay and there's Reese continuing her lap of
:57:15. > :57:18.honour. Quite a formidable performance,
:57:19. > :57:23.world leading mark, last round of a competition. That's the moment you
:57:24. > :57:28.dream about when you're training. She kind of does it, I wouldn't say
:57:29. > :57:40.regularly, but it's something that she looks very comfortable doing.
:57:41. > :57:46.A great competitor, great speed on the runway and then shortened her
:57:47. > :57:53.stride and got lift off. That coupled with the speed.
:57:54. > :58:03.Ivancevic. Probably was watching the long jump
:58:04. > :58:09.final maybe with Spanovic, pipped by Reese at the end.
:58:10. > :58:14.A big surprise if Ivancevic were to pip the Americans here.
:58:15. > :58:18.Rollins. I think she's the favourite. It's so
:58:19. > :58:22.close to call here. It's about executing. It always is
:58:23. > :58:27.in the hurdles. You've got to start well obviously.
:58:28. > :58:32.But then staying calm, hurdles claterring around you.
:58:33. > :58:37.Harrison of course has the ability to run 400 hurdles as well. 7.77, so
:58:38. > :58:43.close to Rollins in the US championships last week.
:58:44. > :58:47.It was less than a 100th of a second.
:58:48. > :58:51.And Ali, she looked good in qualification. Maybe she's just
:58:52. > :58:56.rounded nicely at the right time for the final.
:58:57. > :58:59.I said that Tiff porter, she will have to improve a little bit. Only
:59:00. > :59:07.ran eight flat in qualifying. Talay, she can start quickly.
:59:08. > :59:24.European champion back in 2012. So no country has ever had a clean
:59:25. > :59:30.sweep here. USA have had two in the top three, Canada two in the top
:59:31. > :59:33.three, so, too, Jamaica but no country has had a clean sweep in the
:59:34. > :59:52.women's 60m hurdles. So lane one, Solomon of Great
:59:53. > :59:57.Britain, Whyte of Canada 2, Ivancevic Croatia 3, Rollins, United
:59:58. > :00:00.States 5, and Ali United States and 6, Porter Great Britain, Talay,
:00:01. > :00:09.Belarus, lane 8. Oh, look at that, right in the
:00:10. > :00:15.middle f Harrison hits the first hurdle. Rollins leads this. Porter
:00:16. > :00:20.trying to get there. Ali gets there. Ali, right at the end, came through
:00:21. > :00:29.to the edefend her title. Porter ran a much better race.
:00:30. > :00:34.Rollins couldn't hang on. Well, no American 1, 2, 3 again.
:00:35. > :00:39.Tiff Porter a better performance. What about Ali? It looked as though
:00:40. > :00:42.it was Rollins, but Harrison got the best start. And then slammed into
:00:43. > :00:47.the first hurdle. And because of that, her race was
:00:48. > :00:51.gone. And Ali now realising what she's
:00:52. > :00:56.done. Only Jones has defended this title successfully.
:00:57. > :01:00.Of the three Americans, she was not the one expected to win the gold
:01:01. > :01:04.medal. The other two were the favourites. But she's the one who
:01:05. > :01:08.came through. An interesting start here. You see
:01:09. > :01:13.Rollins stumble. Harrison gets out. But I think she pushed too hard. Got
:01:14. > :01:18.too close to the hurdle, ended up on top of it. 13m in to the first
:01:19. > :01:22.hurdle. Eight strides, she's driven determined. Got right on top of it.
:01:23. > :01:30.And there is a lead, like, as it comes up, hits the hurdle.
:01:31. > :01:34.And from that point on, it looked like Rollins' race, but Porter held
:01:35. > :01:38.on well. Wasn't sure about her position tochlt be fair she was a
:01:39. > :01:41.clear bronze medallist there. So the gold and the bronze the same as last
:01:42. > :01:49.time. Rollins coming through for the silver this time.
:01:50. > :01:53.As you were, as you were. Well, the Americans getting the two,
:01:54. > :01:57.not the full three, though. And well done Tiff Porter because
:01:58. > :02:02.she saved her best performance of the season for the final. I'm not
:02:03. > :02:06.sure that Tiffany Pormenter seemed pleased. Most people would have said
:02:07. > :02:09.if she won a bronze given how she's been performing and the field,
:02:10. > :02:11.there's a smile. Good to see, maybe she wasn't sure she'd won the
:02:12. > :02:17.bronze. She comes to join the other two.
:02:18. > :02:20.Tiffany Porter once more gets on the podium for Great Britain.
:02:21. > :02:25.That's superb. If you look at it at this level,
:02:26. > :02:29.it's about execution. You've seen Harrison go out really, really hard
:02:30. > :02:35.there, endeavouring to get the quick start. She's overcooked it, got on
:02:36. > :02:40.the top of the first hurdle and there goes the race Tiffany did the
:02:41. > :02:43.race she's capable of and been rewarded. 7.9.
:02:44. > :03:26.The gold goes to Ali. Been a good few minutes for the USA.
:03:27. > :03:31.I guess by proxy, even Ashton Eaton was cheering because his Mrs won a
:03:32. > :03:36.gold as well. That's for Canada. A great story, Ali, you know, she's,
:03:37. > :03:42.she didn't, she missed out in the summer. But coming back and winning
:03:43. > :03:46.and retaining this title. Against such stip opposition from
:03:47. > :03:49.her own country. That's her son. He was born in May last year.
:03:50. > :04:03.Titus Maximus. A really Roman name. Good to see Tiff Porter come back.
:04:04. > :04:07.It's been an indifferent winter for her. I think you hit the nail on the
:04:08. > :04:11.head, Tony. The one thing you can say about Tiff Porter, she gets
:04:12. > :04:15.herself in the final. If you get in the final in the hurdles indoors and
:04:16. > :04:20.out doors you have a chance. She missed out, remember her rolling
:04:21. > :04:24.over the track across the line in Beijing, when it looked as though
:04:25. > :04:27.she would win a medal, that was a huge disappointment for her. Though
:04:28. > :04:31.she's not been at her best this winter, she pulled out her best of
:04:32. > :04:36.the year so far in that race. And you can't ask for more, wh
:04:37. > :04:39.you're endeavouring to do as an aet leet is produce a season's best or
:04:40. > :04:45.PB at the championships, that's what you are trying to do. If you look at
:04:46. > :04:48.Tiffa in, y, is e's done that. I think she is the consummate
:04:49. > :04:53.professional. You see her warm up and she's so driven. Sometimes a
:04:54. > :04:56.little steely-faced but she smiles there and she gets a bronze. She's
:04:57. > :05:13.executed. Well that was a cracking final. Now
:05:14. > :05:18.we move to the men. This time no hurdles. 60m flat. The lights are
:05:19. > :05:28.dimmed. The music starts. The atmosphere builds.
:05:29. > :05:32.The fast men will be stepping out. Look there, that world lead, moved
:05:33. > :05:37.himself into the top ten of all time.
:05:38. > :05:41.60m indoors, can he win his first ever global title. Can he win
:05:42. > :05:45.Jamaica's first ever world indoor title at 60m?
:05:46. > :05:55.Unbelievable they have never won it before.
:05:56. > :06:19.Now he has to think about the Chinese athlete, Xie, youth Olympic
:06:20. > :06:27.champion, just 22. Former youth Olympic champion.
:06:28. > :06:32.And Bromell, the 20-year-old. Looking to win a medal indoors.
:06:33. > :06:41.The other end of the age scale... The ever-present Kim Collins.
:06:42. > :06:52.At the age of 39, producing world class sprinting.
:06:53. > :06:58.And Asafa Powell, perhaps the moment he's waited for. The chance, what a
:06:59. > :07:14.chance. And Su Bingtian made the final last
:07:15. > :07:15.year. Is showing that he's improving all
:07:16. > :07:27.of the Gittens of Barbados, breaking his
:07:28. > :07:36.national indoor record, which stood since 1999.
:07:37. > :07:37.Around 6.53. Former world indoor silver medallist
:07:38. > :07:47.Rodgers of the United States. Three men from America, two from
:07:48. > :07:55.China. One from Barbados.
:07:56. > :08:01.Niechlt niechlt There they are, Bracy, Xie, Bromell,
:08:02. > :08:07.Collins, Powell, Su, Gittens and Rodgers.
:08:08. > :08:13.The questions have been asked about Powell so many times over the years,
:08:14. > :08:18.does he have what it takes to win the big races?
:08:19. > :08:21.He looks great in the heats. He looks great in qualitying, great
:08:22. > :08:26.when there's no pressure on. But can any of these men put him under the
:08:27. > :08:31.sort of pressure required to make him tighten up and perhaps lose this
:08:32. > :08:37.race? Bracy won the silver medal two years
:08:38. > :08:41.ago. Xie, a rising talent. Bromell a rising talent. Surely he will look
:08:42. > :08:45.to the Olympic Games this summer as a chance to show what he can do.
:08:46. > :08:50.Collins will undoubtedly be there again. Qualification for him won't
:08:51. > :09:00.be as difficult as is it is for the Americans. The man from St Kitts --
:09:01. > :09:13.Kitts and Nevis could be a threat. Collins produces his best when he
:09:14. > :09:21.needs it. Powell has the question marks hanging over him. What about
:09:22. > :09:26.Su Bingtian? Missed out on a medal behind Bracy two years ago.
:09:27. > :09:30.Gittens, can stop very quickly. He did that in the semis and kept
:09:31. > :09:33.going. Mike Rodgers, 30 years of age now.
:09:34. > :09:56.ANNOUNCER: On your marks. The finaling event of day two of
:09:57. > :10:02.these World Indoor Championships. Bracy on the USA on the far side,
:10:03. > :10:06.then Collins in four, Powell the favourite in five, Su of China six,
:10:07. > :10:08.Gittens in 7 and Rodgers 8. Powell gets another cracking start.
:10:09. > :10:13.So does Bromell. Bromell leading this. Powell is trying to get there.
:10:14. > :10:18.Brm brom has this. And Bromell wins it.
:10:19. > :10:24.6.47. And once again, Powell cannot win a world title. He's been beaten
:10:25. > :10:27.by a younger man and a better man on the day.
:10:28. > :10:32.This is a huge sprint talent. A medal outdoors last year. It's a
:10:33. > :10:38.gold medal this time. Bromell.
:10:39. > :10:40.He comes out on top. Once more Powell can only look and
:10:41. > :10:50.wonder. 6.47, a new personal best.
:10:51. > :10:54.You've got to hand it to Bromell. He ran a great race. Started well.
:10:55. > :10:58.And then just got that half metre and kept going.
:10:59. > :11:01.You couldn't say that Powell didn't start well. He was in the race at
:11:02. > :11:06.this point. Then he doesn't move through. And where's the flowing
:11:07. > :11:12.Powell? Where's the Powell that we saw in the heats and the semifinal?
:11:13. > :11:17.He just doesn't run with the same fluidity. Bromell got ahead. Tony,
:11:18. > :11:29.you said get ahead of him, put him under pressure. You do not see the
:11:30. > :11:33.same Powell coming through. You look at his facial expression, he's
:11:34. > :11:37.tense. That tension has affected the stride length. He may have had the
:11:38. > :11:47.frequency of step and some of the shape, but he doesn't get the knees
:11:48. > :11:53.in the same position. In fairness, he runs out of the track.
:11:54. > :12:00.Well, he maybe was catching him, but you know, Bromell is a good 100m
:12:01. > :12:04.runner. This guy will only get quicker and Powell, you know, what
:12:05. > :12:10.an opportunity again. You run 6.44, 6.44 and then it comes
:12:11. > :12:14.to the final and just waiting for it to come up on the results.
:12:15. > :12:17.The result on our computer is not right.ly wait for that to be
:12:18. > :12:23.officially ratified. There's no doubt about our winner.
:12:24. > :12:30.This young man here. And the USA have maybe found well, I
:12:31. > :12:36.don't know if he will challenge Bolt yet, but he won't be far away. He
:12:37. > :12:39.will be improving all the time. You think about DeGrasse, the Canadian
:12:40. > :12:44.talent he tied with at the world championships. They are the future
:12:45. > :12:47.of world strinting. And to win the world indoor title
:12:48. > :12:52.will give him so much confidence. You can see the photo finish. Forp
:12:53. > :12:57.me, Powell was involved in that. He's not coming up as in the top
:12:58. > :13:02.four on our computer at the moment. But I suspect, well, anyone with any
:13:03. > :13:06.eyes can see there, he's, Gittens is the one who may have nicked the
:13:07. > :13:10.silver there. Though it says here that Collins finished ahead. We will
:13:11. > :13:13.wait for them to tidy that up. It's not official. That's the photo
:13:14. > :13:16.they've been given. Just watching here. Gittens in the blue. What a
:13:17. > :13:20.performance from him. Looking across there.
:13:21. > :13:26.Certainly not Collins who's finished second. That's what it says on our
:13:27. > :13:27.computer, but I think Powell might have been tipped for silver even
:13:28. > :13:36.here. Be interesting to see. Gittens is looking across, you'd
:13:37. > :13:39.think if he'd concentrate, he may have got it. You can't tell, because
:13:40. > :13:44.that camera is beyond the finish line. That's the one that the
:13:45. > :13:49.official also be looking at. And examining.
:13:50. > :14:01.APPLAUSE Well, what a last half hour for the
:14:02. > :14:06.USA. Reese in the long jump, Ali in the
:14:07. > :14:13.60m hurdles and this young man, Bromell.
:14:14. > :14:21.Three gold medals in the space of about 15m.
:14:22. > :14:26.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE When qlou start running 6.47, you
:14:27. > :14:33.know, he's already run under ten seconds, but it shows you, you know,
:14:34. > :14:37.you can start well and transfer that speed into his ability at 100m. He's
:14:38. > :14:41.got every prospect of getting down, even at this stage, into the 9
:14:42. > :14:46.eights and down into the high 9.7s perhaps. I think you're right there.
:14:47. > :14:53.If you look at world class running you have to run under ten seconds in
:14:54. > :14:57.the semifinal to make the final. Thofr r then it's who can hold their
:14:58. > :15:02.nerve. He won't be too happy. Gittens is delighted. Can I tell you
:15:03. > :15:06.that Powell may well have hung on to the silver ahead of Gittens. Just
:15:07. > :15:13.waiting for full confirmation. It's come up now. 100th of a second
:15:14. > :15:17.between the two. Powell we think will be on the rostrum, Gittens as
:15:18. > :15:26.well. Great performance from him. But there was no doubt about the
:15:27. > :15:36.winner. He was, he wasn't headed, he was a good start.
:15:37. > :15:39.Okay, well done. Did he give him some flowers there?
:15:40. > :15:42.Anyway, great race, great way to finish.
:15:43. > :15:46.You know, it's always good, our sport needs new people, new faces,
:15:47. > :15:49.new heroes. Bromell could well turn into one of
:15:50. > :15:53.those. Yes, you know, you see the
:15:54. > :16:03.Americans, it's amazing. The home advantage. We saw it in 2012. The
:16:04. > :16:08.home advantage kicking in, 1-2 in the pole vault for the women.
:16:09. > :16:12.Sam Kendrick. So good start yesterday. Three
:16:13. > :16:17.medals in two events. Its's just continued today.
:16:18. > :16:23.Gold in the 60. Reese last round of the long jumg p.
:16:24. > :16:27.The Americans are doing really well. You're right, youngsters, changing
:16:28. > :16:30.of the guard, you know, you can throw the cliches at it. It is
:16:31. > :16:36.important to see where the future lies. You know, reflecting on young
:16:37. > :16:40.Morgan Lake's per fom ance, when I say that, you know, the youngsters
:16:41. > :16:45.coming to these championships and gaining experience, we talk about
:16:46. > :16:49.it, we talk about the pressure of an old man like Powell struggles to, I
:16:50. > :16:54.say that in the nicest way, inverted commas, as we see in mid-screen,
:16:55. > :17:01.it's tough. It's tough. And it's tough, especially if you build a
:17:02. > :17:05.pattern of negative ex-personses. Pch you feel the pressure, getting
:17:06. > :17:12.tense. And unravelling that. It's hard, right?
:17:13. > :17:15.Well, jugs t tidy this up. Trayvon Bromell confirmed with a new
:17:16. > :17:21.personal best. Brilliant run.
