:00:48. > :00:51.Welcome to the second day of the UK Championships at the Alexander

:00:51. > :00:57.Stadium in Birmingham. We spent much of yesterday talking about

:00:57. > :01:03.just a cat owners who has had the world at her feet. Today, it is all

:01:03. > :01:09.about Mo Farah. 2011 is the year when the world has taken notice of

:01:09. > :01:19.our long-distance king. Mo Farah begins 2011 in a winning start

:01:19. > :01:22.

:01:22. > :01:27.He find something extra! This is a superb performance from Mo Farah.

:01:27. > :01:37.Mo Farah, defending his title. It is going to be gold for Great

:01:37. > :01:37.

:01:37. > :01:45.Britain. A big win and a superb personal

:01:45. > :01:49.best. He has moved to the top of the

:01:49. > :01:53.Premier League and his our athlete of the year so far. For him and

:01:53. > :02:03.everybody else, it is about becoming British champion but also

:02:03. > :02:06.

:02:06. > :02:10.about securing their place at the 18 years since his arrival in this

:02:10. > :02:14.country from Somalia, Mo Farah is the standard-bearer of men's

:02:14. > :02:20.athletics. A British 5,000-metre record in Monaco the highlight of

:02:20. > :02:30.his years so far. Another busy day for just Ennis. But then she

:02:30. > :02:36.wouldn't have it any other way. She completes her events this weekend.

:02:36. > :02:39.Jenny Meadows has never won his 800-metre crowd, but she could

:02:39. > :02:45.break that duct a day and she is the only runner this summer to

:02:45. > :02:49.break the two-minute barrier. After putting the 400-metre runners in a

:02:50. > :02:56.place to become national champion, can Perri Shakes Drayton make it a

:02:56. > :03:00.double when there is some hurdles in the way?

:03:00. > :03:05.The women's javelin champion for the past seven years has been

:03:05. > :03:15.Goldie Sayers, a 60-metre throw today should safely secured title

:03:15. > :03:21.

:03:21. > :03:26.And, so, here is the timetable, and You have to reach as its standard

:03:26. > :03:33.of performance to qualify, and if you finish in the top two, you are

:03:33. > :03:37.automatically in. If you finish in the top two, the door will be open

:03:37. > :03:40.for you. Each country can only have three athletes in any discipline,

:03:40. > :03:49.which means that competition in some of these events is going to be

:03:49. > :03:54.There are several other paragraphs are no regulations, one of which is

:03:54. > :04:01.if you are reigning champion, you are exempt, which means that

:04:01. > :04:05.Jessica Ennis is exempt. It also means that these feet are exempt.

:04:05. > :04:08.As you follow the dancing feet upwards, you find at the top that

:04:08. > :04:15.it is the triple jumper extraordinary, but not competing

:04:15. > :04:20.here. It is a shame I cannot defend my title. But I have had a tough

:04:20. > :04:26.couple of weeks. Training and competing really hard. I took a

:04:26. > :04:30.downward spiral. It wasn't respectful to come here and do one

:04:30. > :04:35.jump or perform below par, because people come here and pay their

:04:35. > :04:41.money to watch the best athletes compete. I am not at my best right

:04:41. > :04:45.now. Is that due to the weight load of your training? Yes. We are

:04:45. > :04:54.starting to wind things up, get a little bit more intense with

:04:54. > :05:00.preparation. I have had a good series of competitions. This one is

:05:00. > :05:03.just... I didn't want to come here and do a bad performance. Some

:05:04. > :05:12.people watching this might say, you want to be British champion, but I

:05:12. > :05:17.guess you have to prioritise. People would prefer me to jump

:05:17. > :05:21.better for my career than come here and jump. Is it difficult for

:05:21. > :05:28.athletes sometimes being pulled in different directions? I think more

:05:28. > :05:33.so than ever before. The Olympics around the corner. Sponsorship

:05:33. > :05:39.commitments. He has to be the king of his own body. If he is not ready

:05:39. > :05:43.to jump, he ought not to. We want to see him win medals as he does at

:05:43. > :05:47.big championships. That is what he has to decide to do for himself.

:05:47. > :05:53.the end of the day, it is about championships. When you become

:05:53. > :06:02.world champion, there is only one place to go. Olympic champion. You

:06:02. > :06:07.have got to maintain your form. Go into next year and have the

:06:07. > :06:11.confidence of being a world champion. I want to go into the

:06:11. > :06:17.championships, especially with Teddy not competing, I want to

:06:17. > :06:27.perform that makes it a greater need. I don't want people to think,

:06:27. > :06:27.

:06:27. > :06:33.he won the medal by default. I want to go in, jump well. I want to say,

:06:33. > :06:38.I am defending my title and I am taking it seriously. Athletes

:06:38. > :06:44.always say, I have got a few niggles. They are never won 100%

:06:44. > :06:53.fit. For you, especially with the pressure on your joints. --

:06:53. > :06:57.especially for you with the pressure on your joints. Every time

:06:57. > :07:03.a stand-up out of the chair I feel it! That could be age. You know

:07:03. > :07:07.your body isn't completely right. I didn't want to put in a bad

:07:07. > :07:12.performance for people. I jumped last year with an illness and

:07:12. > :07:19.barely jumped over 70 metres. It is not worth people paying money to

:07:19. > :07:24.see me jump that badly. -- last year I barely jumped 17 metres. I

:07:24. > :07:31.can sign autographs and things like that today. Let's hope you are as

:07:31. > :07:35.close to 100% as you can before the Olympics. Is it a great sense of

:07:35. > :07:40.disappointment that your French rival isn't going to be at the

:07:40. > :07:45.World Championships? It is what it is, so for me at the moment, I

:07:45. > :07:49.cannot do anything about it, he cannot. It would have been a great

:07:49. > :07:57.competition. It brings up fireworks every time we have something like

:07:57. > :08:00.that. I have got to change my goal. I wanted to win. I am going to win,

:08:00. > :08:06.but now I have to put in a performance that stamps out that I

:08:06. > :08:12.was going to win regardless. Does the expectation have any bearing on

:08:12. > :08:16.you? People would have said, you never know, it is a 50-50 call, but

:08:16. > :08:20.now people are saying it is yours for the taking. I don't want to

:08:20. > :08:27.listen to that kind of talk because it could lead me to being a little

:08:27. > :08:34.bit more relaxed. I don't want to do that. I want to go in, work hard,

:08:34. > :08:39.put in an even better performance than I would have put in. Michael

:08:39. > :08:45.has mentioned it already, we had all this hoopla about being you to

:08:45. > :08:49.go and now it is a -- less than a year to go, and you, given the fact

:08:49. > :08:54.you come from London, how much has this week made you think, it is

:08:54. > :09:00.coming, very fast? It will come around quickly, but I have got to

:09:00. > :09:06.try to keep composed, keep focused on the job at hand. Right now, my

:09:06. > :09:11.focus is to win that world title. Take each day as it comes. Yes. I

:09:11. > :09:15.don't want to get over-hyped with the Olympics. Have you got many

:09:15. > :09:24.pairs of shoes like that? I have got a whole heap. Would you like

:09:24. > :09:31.one? What size shoe are you? 12.5. You? 10. Every time I come on TV I

:09:32. > :09:41.don't want to get a done by you. Best of luck to you. Behind us,

:09:42. > :09:51.

:09:51. > :09:58.there are the finalists of the opportunity for a couple of the man

:09:58. > :10:02.alongside him. The main issue for these men is they want to run fast

:10:02. > :10:08.but there is a bit of a head wind in their face which has been

:10:08. > :10:13.gusting somewhere between half a metre per second and well over two

:10:13. > :10:23.metres per second, so let's hope it gives them an opportunity. Andrew

:10:23. > :10:42.

:10:42. > :10:52.Pozzi will be on the inside. Nick Andrew Pozzi. -- he is a real

:10:52. > :11:02.

:11:02. > :11:12.talent now. Nick Gale, the English defending champion, Commonwealth

:11:12. > :11:22.

:11:22. > :11:30.He has set his new personal best. The Commonwealth bronze-medallist,

:11:30. > :11:38.Lawrence Clarke. He kept a hundred of his personal best. -- he clipped

:11:38. > :11:48.one hundredth off his personal best. Adeniran in, and British

:11:48. > :11:56.

:11:56. > :12:06.universities champion. Hylton, 21- year-old. And then Edirin Okoro, 22

:12:06. > :12:12.

:12:12. > :12:19.interested spectator, and as far as selection is concerned, top two.

:12:19. > :12:29.Sharman has to come in the top two, guaranteeing him selection. Clark

:12:29. > :12:44.

:12:44. > :12:50.and Frankis have a chance as well. Sharman right there. Clarke needing

:12:50. > :12:59.to do some work. But coming well. It is between these two. Frankis

:12:59. > :13:04.might have it. He cannot get it on the line. Clarke. 13.6. Frank is

:13:04. > :13:09.comes second. The time is outside of the standard. But Lawrence

:13:09. > :13:19.Clarke will be delighted to have taken that title. Conditions did

:13:19. > :13:19.

:13:19. > :13:24.not help. A headwind. Clarke is capable of running 13.52. A great

:13:24. > :13:28.performance by both of the lads. Very competitive race. It is

:13:28. > :13:33.difficult to run when you are so close together but both of them

:13:33. > :13:38.held their form well. It was a very aggressive raised by both athletes.

:13:38. > :13:43.Frankis and Clarke got out very strong, powerfully indeed. By

:13:44. > :13:50.halfway, Frankis seemed like he was going to take the title, but

:13:50. > :13:56.Lawrence kept with him. He kept driving over the barriers. He held

:13:56. > :14:03.it together and he drove hard into the line. He wanted this title. I

:14:03. > :14:10.believe he has taken his first. Now this angle. Sharman, not in

:14:10. > :14:20.contention. Not the best season for him. The two athletes out there.

:14:20. > :14:21.

:14:21. > :14:26.This is great to see hurdling being done. I do believe it is Clarke.

:14:26. > :14:31.Let's have a real isolation of his technique. He clipped that first

:14:31. > :14:35.hurdle. He pushed his heart into those hurdles. He is accurate,

:14:35. > :14:41.doesn't want to make too many mistakes. If he accelerates too

:14:41. > :14:49.quickly, you can make a mistake. When you make a mistake, it can

:14:49. > :14:54.cost you dearly. He kept call, kept his head. He is working hard. Watch

:14:54. > :15:04.his determination as he comes over the final barrier. Drive, drive,

:15:04. > :15:09.and then he leans in. Well done, That was fantastic. Where does that

:15:09. > :15:13.leave you for what championships? You did not get the standard, but

:15:13. > :15:21.you could be taken as a discretion we pick. It is the third time I

:15:21. > :15:28.have run it. I hope so. I hope they select me. I have been struggling

:15:28. > :15:33.with injuries all year. This is the 4th meet. I am really pleased. I

:15:33. > :15:38.don't think anybody was particularly quick out there, but I

:15:39. > :15:48.am glad. I have to make a decision based on how I feel tomorrow

:15:49. > :15:49.

:15:49. > :15:56.morning whether I run next week. My legs feel a little bit sore. I

:15:56. > :16:01.don't know whether four days is enough to recover. All that

:16:01. > :16:10.considered, you must be thrilled with this? Really pleased. Almost

:16:10. > :16:20.every single race this year, it has been a head wind. It is better when

:16:20. > :16:30.

:16:30. > :16:40.I get a pack wind. All the best William Sharman could only manage

:16:40. > :16:41.

:16:41. > :16:45.third spot. JOHN INVERDALE: Mo Farah has to run

:16:45. > :16:51.a considerable distance further than Lawrence Clark. He will be on

:16:51. > :16:57.the track in a few minutes' time. In fact, Brean Down at the 5,000

:16:57. > :17:01.metres start off stop Michael, we have had conversations over the

:17:01. > :17:06.last two years, and Mo Farah has always been very good but not there.

:17:06. > :17:11.How has he managed to make what has been a monumental jump to being top

:17:11. > :17:18.of the world rankings? He has left nothing uncovered and has tried

:17:18. > :17:21.everything he possibly can. He is now over in the United States with

:17:22. > :17:31.the Oregon project group and I think that has a really helped him

:17:32. > :17:32.

:17:32. > :17:37.a lot. He has become a very fast and tough competitor. His coach

:17:37. > :17:40.takes a very different approach to distance runners. He works with all

:17:40. > :17:46.of their strength and conditioning programmes with the athletes as

:17:46. > :17:50.well as technique. That is something that is new for Mo and I

:17:50. > :17:54.think he has got a lot of confidence right now. I do not know

:17:54. > :17:58.how much physical advantage he has got yet from that programme because

:17:58. > :18:02.he has only been there since the beginning of this year or the end

:18:02. > :18:07.of last. But training in that environment and giving a new

:18:07. > :18:13.approach has given him lot of confidence. Because when we talked

:18:13. > :18:17.about Paula Radcliffe, and she took women's distance running so much

:18:17. > :18:21.further, upping the ante all the time, it is not just about putting

:18:21. > :18:26.in the miles, it is about everything else that goes with it?

:18:26. > :18:32.It is that attention to detail. Stride length, nutrition and

:18:32. > :18:36.environment has a lot to play in it how you feel. It is amazing to see

:18:36. > :18:41.how Mo has progressed in what feels like a short space of time. Because

:18:41. > :18:49.he has been around for a long time but it is only now that he is

:18:49. > :18:53.getting it together. What is he? 27, 28 years old. Have you watched Mo's

:18:53. > :19:01.progression this year with a certain amount of wonderment?

:19:01. > :19:05.little bit. I think the signs were there last year. He got a step much

:19:05. > :19:13.closer to the world level. But if you think about the British record

:19:13. > :19:19.he ran in Ceric, when he ran 12.57, he was 5th in that race. -- in at

:19:19. > :19:28.Zurich. How could he, with two laps to go, stay competitive with all

:19:28. > :19:33.the others? That it is, in one year, how he has made that jump. It is

:19:33. > :19:38.phenomenal. He is there now. We know that. His performances this

:19:38. > :19:45.year have been phenomenal both in 10,005 1,000 metres. Others have

:19:45. > :19:51.decided not to come this weekend. - - in the 10,000 metres and 5,000

:19:51. > :19:58.metres. We hope he gets a fully fit and ready to go because he has a

:19:58. > :20:01.great chance. I saw him two weeks ago at de Diamond League meeting. I

:20:01. > :20:05.do not know if it is an immediate response to saying hello to

:20:05. > :20:11.somebody, but he seems to be carrying himself so much more

:20:11. > :20:19.confident lid, as though he feels he is a big dog these days. --

:20:19. > :20:24.confidently. He was thought to be a bit arrogant when he was younger

:20:24. > :20:28.and they had to rein back in. He lived with the Kenyans in

:20:28. > :20:32.Teddington and then saw what was required. They did not knock is

:20:32. > :20:38.confident. It actually made him realise he had a bit of a way to go.

:20:38. > :20:44.Now, though, you are right. He got married last year and he has a

:20:44. > :20:50.composure about him. I think that has had a big effect. He is very

:20:51. > :20:55.settled and happy, especially with his new training set-up. Mo is said

:20:55. > :21:01.to be a bit like a sponge. He is eager to learn and soak up the the

:21:01. > :21:05.nation being fed to him. It is what we all want him to do. Win a medal,

:21:05. > :21:12.a gold medal, at the World Championships next year and at the

:21:12. > :21:22.Olympics. We will talk more about that after the race itself. You can

:21:22. > :21:22.

:21:22. > :21:25.see him on screen at the moment. COMMENTATOR: Like everybody us, we

:21:26. > :21:32.were chatting and bitter about Mo and how great it is for British

:21:32. > :21:41.distance running. -- chatting a bit. Quite a few men have lined up for

:21:41. > :21:46.this. That is Timmins. And we have Hay. And of course, for all of

:21:46. > :21:51.these men, and for Vernon as well, who certainly has a chance of

:21:51. > :21:56.getting the B Standard. He has only been a second outside it this year.

:21:56. > :22:03.They will be delighted that Mo is here today. It gives the event a

:22:03. > :22:09.bit of stature. He had the option and initially was thinking of

:22:09. > :22:16.running the 1,500 metres here. That was after he ran back brie and

:22:16. > :22:26.5,000 metres in Monaco last week. - - ran back to brilliant 5,000

:22:26. > :22:46.

:22:46. > :22:54.expect to see Mo Farah running too hard here. Vernon has gone up near

:22:54. > :22:59.the front. For Mo, this won't even be a training run. The sort of pace

:22:59. > :23:06.this is likely to be run at would be a steady three mile affair with

:23:06. > :23:11.the level of fitness Mo has at the moment. There he is, through the

:23:11. > :23:16.first 200, just easing his way around. It will be interesting to

:23:16. > :23:22.see what he feels like doing. It is funny, because when you come into a

:23:22. > :23:32.race like this, there is a colder pace but running too slow does not

:23:32. > :23:53.

:23:53. > :24:01.highlights here in the UK. This is Lawrence Okoye, the new British

:24:01. > :24:07.world record holder. That was a bit short and a real challenge for the

:24:07. > :24:12.young man. It certainly is a big challenge. We have four qualifiers

:24:12. > :24:18.for Daegu, so this is possibly the most important domestic discus

:24:18. > :24:24.competition we have had in years. Possibly ever. And Lawrence Okoye

:24:24. > :24:28.is definitely a man for the future. World teenage record holder, and he

:24:28. > :24:35.starts his campaign with a reasonable thrower, but I am sure

:24:36. > :24:45.there is a lot more to come. If we look back at some of the early

:24:46. > :24:49.

:24:49. > :24:58.stages of the men's high jump, this was Challenger going out.

:24:58. > :25:06.Disappointing for him. Mason has had all sorts of problems since

:25:06. > :25:10.that silver medal in Beijing. This was also too high Fort Mason. A

:25:10. > :25:20.disappointment for him. A frustrating time he has had since

:25:20. > :25:24.those heady days in Beijing. Such an easy language, with his style at

:25:24. > :25:29.his best. He probably had the height to get over that. But when

:25:29. > :25:38.you consider, his first competition in a couple of years and does two

:25:38. > :25:45.surgeries, and that is what happened. And the women's long jump.

:25:45. > :25:55.This is Proctor. She has now converted to Great Britain. Match

:25:55. > :25:56.

:25:56. > :26:04.is well out over 6.5 metres. She also has the B Standard, so it

:26:04. > :26:08.should she win here, she will have to wait for the selectors' decision.

:26:08. > :26:18.This is just an individual jump so she should be fairly safe to go to

:26:18. > :26:29.

:26:29. > :26:34.Daegu. So, Proctor, a good lead there, with 6.58. Next on the

:26:34. > :26:41.runway, Amy Harris. And that looks good, very good. Nice to see her

:26:41. > :26:50.jumping well. Certainly with the likes of Jessica Ennis in the

:26:50. > :26:55.competition, she will be trying to be imposing her domestic number one

:26:55. > :27:01.or number two position, as borrowers Proctor is concerned,

:27:01. > :27:10.because she really is an outstanding athlete. -- as far as

:27:10. > :27:20.Doctor Who is concerned. -- as far as Proctor is concerned. Here's

:27:20. > :27:26.Jessica Ennis. Very tired overnight and would not have minded a day off.

:27:26. > :27:36.She changed her take-off leg after the stress fracture of that caused

:27:36. > :27:36.

:27:36. > :27:40.her to miss Beijing. It will be her first Olympic Games. We would like

:27:40. > :27:44.to be hanging of the gold medal around her neck already but we

:27:44. > :27:49.should not underestimate the challenge. She is indoor and

:27:49. > :27:53.outdoor champion, European as well. But we forget that she was injured

:27:53. > :27:59.in the run-up to Beijing, so her first Olympic competition, and

:27:59. > :28:09.obviously the aim for hire, or team Ennis, will be that she will become

:28:09. > :28:16.

:28:16. > :28:25.champion. -- the aim for her. men's 5,000 metres has finally got

:28:25. > :28:31.going. Nobody wants to shake things up too much. Mo Farah had a little

:28:31. > :28:37.nibble at the front but all of a sudden, Gillespie has taken off.

:28:37. > :28:43.Look at that. That is, what, 20 metres or so? The young 20-year-old,

:28:43. > :28:50.who has been having a good year. A little bit of youthful exuberance,

:28:50. > :28:57.perhaps. He has gone really hard to get that lead. Mo has just joined

:28:57. > :29:06.in a little bit. And now Mellor going with them as well. I am

:29:06. > :29:11.trying to think, what year was it 5,000 metres? I think it was Peter

:29:11. > :29:19.Riley, and he took off at the front and Mo ran at the back for ages and

:29:19. > :29:24.did not realise... I do not think that will happen today, mind you.

:29:24. > :29:29.just wonder, Steve, when you had a race like this, when Mo Farah on

:29:29. > :29:33.paper his head and shoulders above everybody else, you go in with a

:29:33. > :29:39.plan by what you are doing is watching Mo Farah, and certainly,

:29:39. > :29:48.Gillespie has thought, no, I am going to run my own race. So if his

:29:48. > :29:54.plan was to go at this praise and produce a 25-metre lead, up against

:29:54. > :30:04.the best 5,000-metre runner in the world, that is what he is doing. --

:30:04. > :30:06.

:30:06. > :30:11.to go at this pace. I saw Mike McLeod last night. He was here are

:30:11. > :30:18.watching with Ryan's mum as well, and I said, what do you think of Mo

:30:18. > :30:28.Farah? He said, oh, my goodness, she is also! But Gillespie Leeds at

:30:28. > :30:29.

:30:29. > :30:39.the moment. -- he is also in. is another of the athletes that has

:30:39. > :30:40.

:30:40. > :30:50.the A Standard. Just to remind you of the standards. A Standard is 65,

:30:50. > :30:54.

:30:54. > :31:01.B Standard is 63. But the cannot see it from this angle, but

:31:01. > :31:05.they are throwing up hill, which is a disadvantage. The centre of the

:31:05. > :31:10.field is raised. It has been calculated that the disadvantage is

:31:10. > :31:17.at least a couple of metres. But Abdul Buhari, first place, the

:31:17. > :31:24.first man over 60 metres. And Tom Parsons is in the high jump now.

:31:25. > :31:34.is the British number one this year... And that his wife. -- and

:31:35. > :31:41.

:31:41. > :31:49.introduce a certain amount of error. He has looked very much in control

:31:49. > :31:58.of that. A local lad, he looks very confident indeed. He is going to be

:31:58. > :32:05.tough to beat. No failures so far, as you can see. We have Carl

:32:05. > :32:12.Myerscough now. This is around three. At the lead held by Abdul

:32:12. > :32:16.Buhari. Myerscough, that has put him in the lead, I think. This is

:32:16. > :32:25.the shoot-out for selection. The first two, guaranteed to go to the

:32:25. > :32:31.world Champs. We could have Carl Myerscough going third. Over 60

:32:31. > :32:38.metres. That will certainly challenge Abdul Buhari. A lot of

:32:38. > :32:48.people think this guy is a better discus thrower than a shot putter.

:32:48. > :32:56.

:32:56. > :33:04.we might have expected, Mo Farah has regained the lead. The Scotsman,

:33:04. > :33:10.who rather bravely decided to take things out, picked up the pace, and

:33:10. > :33:18.now they are running at quite a pace. It has settled down.

:33:19. > :33:26.Gillespie is an accrued. -- is in that group. MacLeod looks like he

:33:26. > :33:30.wants to push on a little. Mo Farah will be running in London next week

:33:30. > :33:40.over 3,000 metres. That will be a much harder race. He will go to

:33:40. > :33:42.

:33:42. > :33:48.America to do some training. He will go with his training partner.

:33:48. > :33:52.They will prepare him as well as they can. A looking ahead to the

:33:52. > :33:58.World Championship finals, the likelihood, we are going to have

:33:58. > :34:02.three Kenyans and a number of other Africans, and Mo Farah, more than

:34:02. > :34:11.likely the only Briton in those races, do you think he is a marked

:34:11. > :34:20.man? Andrew Vernon, going past Mo Farah. To answer your question, yes.

:34:20. > :34:24.I think he is the man to beat. The question which Mo Farah has not

:34:24. > :34:32.answered yet but we are assuming that doubling up is an option he is

:34:32. > :34:38.prepared to take. 10,000 will be first, and then he will be taking

:34:38. > :34:48.on the other Kenyans. Then he will come back to the 5,000 and do it

:34:48. > :34:48.

:34:48. > :34:53.again. It is a daunting prospect. Hot and humid conditions. But he is

:34:53. > :34:58.in the best shape of his light so far, and the focus first of all

:34:58. > :35:04.will be 10, and then we will see what happens. There is no doubt

:35:04. > :35:10.about it. We will be very excited watching this guy a. The prospect

:35:10. > :35:14.of somebody taking on the long-time champions, those that have

:35:14. > :35:22.dominated long-distance running on the track. He is British, three

:35:22. > :35:26.went through. Coached by an American. Other coaches have said

:35:26. > :35:34.that they haven't scraped the surface with Mo Farah's ability.

:35:34. > :35:39.His training partner, he is doing far more advanced training than Mo

:35:39. > :35:49.Farah, and the best of Mo Farah is yet to come. He has got to work a

:35:49. > :35:53.little harder. Andy Vernon, he kept that 60 lap -- 62nd lap going. Now

:35:53. > :36:01.we see what a different class Mo Farah is. A little bit of

:36:01. > :36:06.acceleration, and away he goes. He could tablet that till much later.

:36:06. > :36:12.He has been doing this to the best of the world. It is his ability

:36:12. > :36:19.over the last 600 metres which has changed him as an athlete which

:36:19. > :36:24.means he is competitive. Not only competitive but dormant -- dominant.

:36:24. > :36:31.He is easing off now. He must be delighted. He didn't have to come

:36:31. > :36:39.to the championships. We can give him a big send-off for the World

:36:39. > :36:47.Championships. Andy Vernon had a bit of go. Well done to him. Mellor

:36:47. > :36:54.takes third spot. Jonny Hay will be after him. It is just this

:36:54. > :37:00.nervousness. Stay healthy, Mo Farah, and hopefully these last four weeks

:37:00. > :37:07.will go really well. There is his little girl, joining in the

:37:07. > :37:10.celebrations. Mo Farah has to keep himself under wraps. And put the

:37:10. > :37:20.finishing touches into his preparations for the World

:37:20. > :37:32.

:37:32. > :37:36.moment, but look at this. Class acceleration. There are a lot of

:37:36. > :37:42.differences between Mo Farah and the rest, but that gives you an

:37:42. > :37:49.indication as to how classy Mo Farah has begun -- has become. His

:37:49. > :37:57.sights will be set at Crystal Palace next week. On the screen, he

:37:57. > :38:02.saw the gap was not closing. He eased off, but that will not be the

:38:02. > :38:09.case next weekend at Crystal Palace. The opposition will be a lot

:38:09. > :38:14.tougher, and it will be at the World Championships, too. Mo Farah,

:38:14. > :38:18.a national champion. Andy Vernon, he will not mind losing to this man.

:38:19. > :38:28.He may be hoped his time would be quicker, but that is the nature of

:38:29. > :38:33.

:38:33. > :38:38.the race. A class apart is Mo Farah. Paul Dickenson said that you are a

:38:38. > :38:44.class apart. I just wonder, can you put it into words for us how it has

:38:44. > :38:49.been for you? Things are going really well and last year was a

:38:49. > :38:53.great year for Europeans, but this year is even better. I had to make

:38:53. > :38:57.a lot of changes in my life. As an athlete, you have to make

:38:57. > :39:02.sacrifices, and it is working. what about the reception from the

:39:02. > :39:07.crowd? It is an acknowledgement of the Attlee to you have become.

:39:07. > :39:15.Definitely. Massive support. That sheer I got here and in Birmingham,

:39:15. > :39:21.it is amazing. Crystal Palace next. Definitely. I am going to do a

:39:21. > :39:25.three kilometres there. Less than a week to go. Exciting. When it comes

:39:25. > :39:30.to the world championships, we have talked about the potential of

:39:30. > :39:36.doubling up. Can you explain how you see that? Where will you put

:39:36. > :39:43.all your eggs? Bread baskets? Definitely in one basket. You have

:39:43. > :39:47.to take one event at a time. I am going to take -- to do the 10,000

:39:47. > :39:53.for sure, and then we will see how the legs are feeling. It is not

:39:53. > :40:02.always as easy as it looks. But as long as they keep on doing what I

:40:02. > :40:11.am doing, it will be great. We love seeing your list of winds. Well

:40:11. > :40:21.done. Thank you for all the support. And good luck to everybody fasting

:40:21. > :40:26.

:40:26. > :40:32.is in great shape and now he has another title to his name. The last

:40:32. > :40:42.lap for Mo Farah was a 58. Jonny Mellor took the bronze medal in the

:40:42. > :40:47.

:40:47. > :40:55.about Martyn Bernard? He has looked very good so far. Well, that is a

:40:55. > :41:00.season's best by some way. Martyn Bernard, he has jumped very well,

:41:00. > :41:08.come back from injury. He has been taking it slowly. This was an

:41:08. > :41:15.important day. He has been an Olympic finalist, a world

:41:15. > :41:20.Championship finalist. At his best, he can challenge the top jumpers in

:41:20. > :41:30.the world. He needed a good performance today. To 0.28 will

:41:30. > :41:33.

:41:33. > :41:38.probably put him on the plane to Not quite as impressive as Martyn

:41:38. > :41:47.Bernard. But three athletes still fighting it out for this national

:41:47. > :41:53.title. Parsons is the lead at the moment still. Parsons leads by

:41:53. > :42:03.having no failure so far. But that is a good clearance from the

:42:03. > :42:20.

:42:20. > :42:25.men are out for the next final of the track, the men's 1,500 metres.

:42:25. > :42:30.Always one of the highlights of national championships.

:42:30. > :42:35.Straightaway on the first page we see Andy Baddeley of Harrow. Twice

:42:35. > :42:40.the champion already, going for a hat-trick. He looked very

:42:40. > :42:45.comfortable in his heat yesterday. James Thie, still running quite

:42:45. > :42:52.well. Chris Warburton, he could challenge, as good Nick McCormick,

:42:52. > :42:55.and young James Shane, who did us proud indeed European Junior

:42:55. > :43:01.Championships, where he picked up third place. Andy Baddeley,

:43:01. > :43:05.possibly looking for a fast time. He has got Crystal Palace next week.

:43:05. > :43:11.James Brewer, on the outside, he missed the World Championship final

:43:11. > :43:20.a couple of years ago by one place. Steve Mitchell of Bristol and West.

:43:20. > :43:28.There is the young man I was telling you about, James Shane.

:43:28. > :43:32.James the Cardiff. -- James Thie of Cardiff. There they will all be

:43:32. > :43:38.challenging this man, with the Red Number on, Andrew Baddeley, on his

:43:39. > :43:48.day, not just Britain's best, but one of the world's best. He needs

:43:49. > :44:00.

:44:00. > :44:08.but they have gone off at a brisk pace. McCormick, stretching the

:44:08. > :44:12.doors out. It is good to see. There are two men it in good shape to run

:44:12. > :44:20.well. That is Shane and McCormick. Baddeley is having a disappointing

:44:20. > :44:27.season by his standards. Tom Lancashire, not going well. He has

:44:27. > :44:32.been ill. Brooks, he had a good year last year, but not this year.

:44:32. > :44:37.So, Nick McCormick, with will determination, has set out. You've

:44:37. > :44:43.got to be careful if you do this. You don't want to set it up for

:44:43. > :44:50.anybody else. I have a feeling that James Shane has an opportunity to

:44:50. > :44:53.run very well here. That first lap is a bit quick, to be honest. The

:44:53. > :45:00.first 200 was a bit swift and they are settling down now. They are

:45:00. > :45:05.having go at least. James Shane sitting comfortably. Nick McCormick,

:45:05. > :45:14.still in the lead. There are a lot of good distance runners from where

:45:14. > :45:20.he comes. McCormick, always witty, forthright. Baddeley, sitting in

:45:20. > :45:24.5th place. Shane, still in second. You were saying you like the look

:45:24. > :45:30.of James Shane. We were saying that about a brew up a couple of years

:45:30. > :45:36.ago. Yes, he has had a couple of problems. He is not as fit as he

:45:36. > :45:44.would like to be. That is what I like about James Shane, he puts

:45:44. > :45:50.himself in the right processes. -- in the right places. He has a good

:45:50. > :45:56.tactical brain. Now, this is where they have to go for it. You've got

:45:56. > :46:01.to push on in the third lap. Look how comfortable shame is feeling.

:46:01. > :46:06.If they slowed too much, the rest of the field welcome back. Look at

:46:06. > :46:16.Shane, he wants to push on, he knows that McCormick is struggling.

:46:16. > :46:24.

:46:24. > :46:29.was stuck between De chasing group. Steve Mitchell in third place and

:46:29. > :46:35.Andy Baddeley in 4th. There is going to be a real battle over this

:46:35. > :46:40.last 400. Shane has a nice action and he just needs to get the rhythm

:46:40. > :46:50.going. He is starting to turn the pressure on her and he is moving a

:46:50. > :46:58.

:46:58. > :47:04.wear. Baddeley is struggling. -- he is moving away. I am not sure he

:47:04. > :47:13.can get to the A Standard. Andy Baddeley is forlornly chasing for

:47:13. > :47:19.that second place. Perhaps the merger has now of a real star of

:47:19. > :47:25.the future, with Shane. He is winning despite an absolute mile.

:47:25. > :47:34.He is going to be just outside the target but Shane wins it. Baddeley

:47:34. > :47:39.in second place and then Nicky McCormick picks up third. What a

:47:39. > :47:46.gutsy performance. A big personal best for James Shane, by almost

:47:46. > :47:56.three seconds. And certainly a very solid B Standard. James Shane is

:47:56. > :48:01.

:48:01. > :48:09.If he does the right thing and put himself in the right place. That is

:48:09. > :48:15.a massive jump for him. He is destroying a Andy Baddeley and Nick

:48:15. > :48:20.McCormick. He will get faster and is capable of A Standard. If they

:48:20. > :48:28.only take one with the B Standard, it has to be this man. Well done.

:48:28. > :48:35.Really good performance. That is a big step forward for him. He knows

:48:35. > :48:45.how to win 1,500 metre races. He has got a good racing brain on him.

:48:45. > :48:48.

:48:48. > :48:58.The bar is now up to 2.31 now. Parsons is capable of this. And he

:48:58. > :49:00.

:49:00. > :49:08.was so, so close. He has got it in the bag, no question. And this is

:49:08. > :49:14.Ugen. Since 14, the best in the last round. That is better. She has

:49:14. > :49:23.been struggling a bit. The lead is still with Proctor. Jessica Ennis

:49:23. > :49:32.has not improved. But Lorraine Ugen, quite tall, quite rangy, with a

:49:32. > :49:38.very simple technique. That is out to her personal best, which is 6.46.

:49:38. > :49:48.What has she done? She likes it. That looks like a personal best

:49:48. > :49:54.

:49:54. > :50:02.A big personal best. Tell me what was going through your mind before

:50:02. > :50:10.the race? I just wanted to cover everything. Nick ticket tout, which

:50:10. > :50:13.was great for him, but I could not be happier. -- took it out.

:50:13. > :50:23.have got a great racing brain and that bright future you have ahead

:50:23. > :50:28.of you, what do you think of that? I don't know what to say! Thank you.

:50:28. > :50:34.To have come up against one of the best in the world, thank you to...

:50:34. > :50:38.That is all I can say. Where does this leave you in terms of the

:50:38. > :50:47.World Championships? You have not quite got a A Standard, but you are

:50:47. > :50:52.certainly out there? I am aiming for the European Under 23s. I will

:50:52. > :50:59.come back and try to run as well as I can as long as possible and see

:50:59. > :51:09.what happens. If I don't get it, I am so pleased with my season anyway,

:51:09. > :51:15.

:51:15. > :51:25.so the really, really proud. Well of greater under 23 athletes. James

:51:25. > :51:33.Shane is one of them. Great prospect.

:51:33. > :51:40.JOHN INVERDALE: We have relocated to the start off the next woman's

:51:40. > :51:47.race. That was basically a glorified training run for Mo Farah,

:51:47. > :51:54.but what do you make of Jane Shane? I think he is in phenomenal shape.

:51:54. > :51:59.For Mo, it is getting used to going into a championship as a favourite.

:51:59. > :52:03.The Kenyans will all be targeting Mo Farah because he has the fastest

:52:03. > :52:06.time and has been consistent this year. Now he has to get himself

:52:06. > :52:09.used to that because he is the favourite. He will have to

:52:09. > :52:14.understand how to deal with that pressure and deliver the same

:52:14. > :52:19.performance as he has done the last few weeks. This was a training run.

:52:19. > :52:24.I think the three kilometres next week in London will help them. They

:52:24. > :52:34.will know what sort of a competitive he is. Who did James

:52:34. > :52:39.

:52:39. > :52:48.Shane remind you of? I loved those long white socks. I had a poster on

:52:48. > :52:52.my wall. Let's move on. Talking about young people, Jody Williams

:52:52. > :52:56.is one of the best sprinters in this country. Her team are saying

:52:56. > :53:01.they do not want her to run in the World Championships and it is that

:53:01. > :53:07.great debate about whether you wait for the moment or the fact that you

:53:07. > :53:12.have to be in it to win it. Where do you sit on this, Michael?

:53:12. > :53:18.think her team is making the right decision. Right now, it is all

:53:18. > :53:22.about her long-term development and that is what is at stake. It is

:53:22. > :53:26.unfortunate that the timing is what it is and then you have the World

:53:26. > :53:35.Championships right now, with no qualifiers except Williams, but the

:53:35. > :53:38.fact is, she is 17 years-old. They have to do the best buy her a long

:53:38. > :53:44.term development. They have to plan this out and stick to that plan,

:53:44. > :53:49.and that is what they have done. you agree with Michael? I do. I

:53:49. > :53:54.think she has set his sights on the European junior championships this

:53:54. > :53:58.year, and yes, we can say, what if she misses this opportunity, but

:53:58. > :54:03.her focus has always been these championships and her team has to

:54:03. > :54:07.know what is better for her. We have had so many young girls come

:54:07. > :54:13.through the sport that a talented and they get this burn-out. They

:54:13. > :54:20.get injured and felt into significance. -- fade into

:54:20. > :54:27.insignificance. You say it is a missed opportunity. But an

:54:27. > :54:33.opportunity for what right now? To get into a final? She wants the

:54:33. > :54:39.opportunities for medals. Well, to be continued. In her absence, we

:54:39. > :54:47.have a pretty competitive race behind us. And she cannot see, but

:54:47. > :54:57.Steve Cram is still wearing white socks in the commentary box!

:54:57. > :55:28.

:55:28. > :55:38.You can see the main athletes are about these middle lanes. As we go

:55:38. > :55:41.

:55:41. > :55:51.through the line-up. They look really good to be running on the

:55:51. > :55:57.flat like that. The conditions have not been helpful. When wind on the

:55:57. > :56:04.top bend has been into the face, so hopefully they can settle a little

:56:04. > :56:14.bit and just give Oyepitan, in particular, a chance to get that

:56:14. > :56:29.

:56:29. > :56:32.And she has run a superb first 70, 80 metres. Can she make the

:56:32. > :56:42.transition into the home straight? Oyepitan is looking a bit tired,

:56:42. > :56:44.

:56:44. > :56:49.but now it is Onuora who is going a way. She will win the title and it

:56:49. > :56:53.is 23.27. Again into a headwind, so congratulations to her. A great

:56:53. > :56:57.weekend for the Liverpudlian. A bit of a surprise because I would have

:56:57. > :57:06.said that after the Leeds, Oyepitan looked good, but she looked as

:57:06. > :57:15.though she ran out of juice there. COLIN JACKSON: We must remember

:57:15. > :57:20.that Oyepitan has got the medal from those Games previously and she

:57:20. > :57:26.has been susceptible. You have got to keep practising to get it right.

:57:26. > :57:33.She has been a bit shy of racing. As you can see, just as we come

:57:33. > :57:37.into the crucial part of the race, she has not got it quite enough.

:57:37. > :57:45.And Gianni Frankis takes the title quite comfortably. As they come

:57:45. > :57:47.round the turn, coming into the home straight, this is where they

:57:47. > :57:51.are at their fastest. They are getting into the phase where they

:57:51. > :57:57.just need to relax. They just want to maintain their form as long as

:57:57. > :58:02.they possibly can. The fact is, everybody is slowing down. The key

:58:02. > :58:08.is to keep it together and Onuora did it much better than Oyepitan

:58:08. > :58:13.this time. What he great weekend it has been so far. Qualifying for the

:58:13. > :58:23.100 metres and this great race in the 200. I think she will be very

:58:23. > :58:30.

:58:30. > :58:35.could put him on the aeroplane to Korea. Not quite. A good

:58:35. > :58:45.performance from him, though. He has the B Standard and he looked

:58:45. > :58:45.

:58:45. > :58:55.good. Good clearance at that height. Very, very impressive but. You only

:58:55. > :59:00.

:59:00. > :59:08.get through competition as the training is so important. And now

:59:08. > :59:14.Robbie Grabarz. His final attempt at this height as well. That was

:59:14. > :59:24.not close. He will finished down in third. The winner, though, Tom

:59:24. > :59:27.

:59:28. > :59:37.Parsons. Confirmation of that. here's confirmation of that women's

:59:38. > :59:42.

:59:42. > :59:48.After the tremendous performance in the 100, this backing it up, it

:59:48. > :59:54.just illustrates what a fine season you are having? I am having a bit

:59:54. > :59:59.of a good year for once! Last year was pretty much a washout, with

:59:59. > :00:04.injury and Rehabilitation, and just questioning whether I was a... What

:00:04. > :00:12.I was going to do in the sport after all the long work I had done.

:00:12. > :00:19.I got an amazing support team and my two coaches. They got me focused

:00:19. > :00:23.everybody around and it is paying off. Was it always your idea to do

:00:23. > :00:32.the 100 and the 200 at the World Championships? I ran a personal

:00:32. > :00:38.best for the 100 of 11.18, and then I knew off my first race, I am

:00:38. > :00:42.going to run a 22 eventually. I am in pretty good shape. In an ideal

:00:42. > :00:46.world, looking at the worlds, I would definitely like to have a

:00:46. > :00:51.word with my coaches and head coach to see what can come out of it. But

:00:51. > :00:56.I am in good shape and it is good preparation for going into 2012. I

:00:56. > :01:00.think I am pretty consistent as well. With conditions better than

:01:00. > :01:07.today you will get that time over the next week or so? Yeah,

:01:07. > :01:14.definitely. I have had one plus wind up going into minus, and it

:01:15. > :01:24.has always been 23 into a plus wind. So give me a minus and I will be up

:01:25. > :01:31.

:01:31. > :01:39.there. Well done today and all the 400 flat. Nobody has done the

:01:39. > :01:44.double, so will she be the first? The high jump results. Tom Parsons,

:01:44. > :01:54.definitely selected. He has the A Standard. Robbie Grabarz getting C

:01:54. > :01:54.

:01:54. > :02:00.B Standard. -- getting the B Standard. Now, the women's pole

:02:00. > :02:10.vault. Holly Bleasdale, the new British record. This, though, for

:02:10. > :02:23.

:02:23. > :02:30.discus. Brett Morse was the early leader. That is pretty close.

:02:30. > :02:39.He has been overshadowed this year by Lawrence Okoye. He was the under

:02:39. > :02:43.23 champion. But he is a good thriller as well. He increased his

:02:43. > :02:51.lifetime best this season. Very quick in the circle. Off balance at

:02:51. > :02:58.the end, but not too bad. In second place with 61.57. More to come

:02:58. > :03:06.later. Abdul Buhari was the first athlete to go over 60. He is now in

:03:06. > :03:13.third place. Well, that is huge. The context of today's competition,

:03:13. > :03:21.that is a massive throw. It is. I saw this man training at his club

:03:21. > :03:26.quite recently. all of his throws were very long and technically very

:03:26. > :03:30.good, so in this relatively his late stage of the season, I think

:03:30. > :03:36.his confidence is increasing, and if he goes to the world

:03:36. > :03:43.championships, anything can happen. We saw a Hungarian 369 metres plus.

:03:44. > :03:50.I hope that will boost his confidence. We saw a Hungarian

:03:50. > :03:58.throat 69 metres plus. Now, Terry Shakes Drayton. If she can win this

:03:58. > :04:04.one over 400 metres hurdles, she will do the amazing record. A

:04:04. > :04:14.punishing regime she has set herself in Birmingham. This is the

:04:14. > :04:48.

:04:48. > :04:58.Times North of England champion. -- Tracey Duncan, the same club as the

:04:58. > :05:05.Championship record holder, Sally Gunnell. Meghan Beesley, European

:05:05. > :05:10.Under 23 bronze-medallist this year. She could challenge. She already

:05:10. > :05:20.has the B Standard, she is going for the A Standard. That is the

:05:20. > :05:20.

:05:20. > :05:26.same for a knee Child. -- Eilidh Child. The star of them all, one of

:05:26. > :05:32.the stars of the British team, Perri Shakes Drayton, European

:05:32. > :05:41.bronze-medallist last year. And, after a medal by the time she gets

:05:41. > :05:45.to the world championships. Britain's number one junior,

:05:45. > :05:52.Fitzpatrick. She has already increased her lifetime best this

:05:52. > :06:01.year. Finally, Emily Parker, the new English champion. She finished

:06:01. > :06:06.5th in the last two UK finals. Everybody will be looking at lane

:06:06. > :06:16.number six. Shakes Drayton, she has already ran three rounds of the 400

:06:16. > :06:24.metres flat. Her winning time yesterday, she ran 51.52. It was a

:06:24. > :06:34.big win for her. She is a crucial member of Britain's 4x100 -- 4x4

:06:34. > :06:40.

:06:40. > :06:48.relating. -- relay team. They get away. Shakes Drayton, absolutely

:06:48. > :06:56.flying but Child is with her. Eilidh Child has moved ahead of

:06:56. > :07:01.Beesley. They go through 200 metres. Meghan Beesley, in touch, but a

:07:01. > :07:09.couple of metres behind Perri Shakes Drayton. This is where she

:07:09. > :07:19.is very strong, in this 300 metres, the last 300 metres. They are

:07:19. > :07:20.

:07:20. > :07:30.almost together. A little startled by Child. But Perri Shakes Drayton

:07:30. > :07:34.

:07:35. > :07:39.has to get the gold. She is coming Birmingham. Child finishers in

:07:39. > :07:46.second place. In the end, the time is not as impressive as we had

:07:46. > :07:49.hoped. But she has had a very tough schedule. She has got to be tired.

:07:49. > :07:55.Almost reproducing the rounds of a major Championship with the volume

:07:55. > :08:03.of work she has put in, but it has paid off. She is a phenomenal

:08:03. > :08:09.athlete. 400 metres is a tough event. Here, she approaches the 8th

:08:09. > :08:14.hurdle, she is composed. It is great to see her. She is so

:08:14. > :08:18.confident in what she can do. She pushes hard into this final barrier,

:08:18. > :08:25.and takes it through very comfortably. I can assure you, she

:08:25. > :08:30.will be very tired. It has been a tough weekend for her, but she has

:08:30. > :08:34.got two gold medals so she will be very pleased. It will be a very

:08:34. > :08:41.challenging world championships for her because all the competitors are

:08:41. > :08:47.running very well. So for her to be truly competitive, she needs to get

:08:47. > :08:57.under 53.8. But a wonderful young lady and congratulations on your

:08:57. > :09:09.

:09:09. > :09:16.Ennis, down in 4th place. She will be looking for a little bit further.

:09:16. > :09:21.She sits back at take off, but that looks better. She has had to change

:09:21. > :09:28.legs at take-off. I think she could get a few more points here. Very,

:09:29. > :09:35.very quick. Great jumping ability, and all of that. She takes off on

:09:35. > :09:41.her left leg. She takes off on her right leg for high jumps. She was

:09:41. > :09:51.lucky not to get a foul there. It has been a very busy weekend for

:09:51. > :09:56.

:09:56. > :10:01.her. Has she improved? That is This has been an amazing weekend

:10:01. > :10:10.for you. The first woman to do this double of 400 flat and hurdles. How

:10:10. > :10:18.does that the will? I am happy. I have had a good day at the offers,

:10:18. > :10:22.of or a weekend. To come to the championships, and it has been

:10:22. > :10:26.quality both finals, I am happy, and I am sure my coach will be very

:10:26. > :10:31.pleased with me and all the hard work I have put in. It is paying a

:10:31. > :10:37.off. Tell me about the thinking between you and Chris to do that

:10:37. > :10:42.double. Where did you think it would leave you? It would give me

:10:42. > :10:50.the confidence that I am fit enough not to hold back, at not, like,

:10:50. > :10:54.make it easy for the girls I am up against with. I am capable and I

:10:54. > :10:59.will be able to put myself up against the best in the world. I am

:10:59. > :11:07.fit enough. I tend to get quicker with each championships. I can move

:11:07. > :11:13.on, and make myself better, and make Great Britain proud. And you

:11:13. > :11:20.orach huge member of the 4x4 relay team. Yes. We put in a huge

:11:20. > :11:27.performance yesterday. It is good. I will do my best. I will put in

:11:27. > :11:37.100 and %. It has been brilliant seeing you this weekend. -- I will

:11:37. > :11:40.

:11:40. > :11:45.Every time she has stepped up on the track, it has been a top

:11:45. > :11:51.quality performance. She is the champion again. A unique double.

:11:51. > :11:56.The 400 metres flat and hurdles. Sally Gunnell's Championship record

:11:56. > :12:03.stays intact, though. Meghan Beesley, the local girl from

:12:03. > :12:07.Birchfield, she gets the bronze The next race is the men's 800

:12:08. > :12:13.metres. It should be really competitive as far as domestic

:12:13. > :12:22.competition is concerned, but this is also a discipline where one man

:12:22. > :12:28.has cast a Shadow over the competition. He looks unbeatable.

:12:28. > :12:33.The supporting public at large have not taken on how unbelievable he is.

:12:33. > :12:38.He has not had a huge amount of attention because none of the

:12:38. > :12:44.athletes that have been competing in the event have been a Olympic

:12:44. > :12:47.champions or world champions. None of them have been consistent. None

:12:47. > :12:50.of them have been winning Championship after Championship. He

:12:50. > :12:59.seems to be the first person in a very long time that has been

:12:59. > :13:02.consistent. But he hasn't won that major Championship yet, but at this

:13:02. > :13:12.point might, he is unbeatable because nobody can get close to

:13:12. > :13:13.

:13:13. > :13:22.what he is run in. We are talking about 1.44? I don't think so. Not

:13:22. > :13:29.even out of Rimmer. I don't think anybody else can run like that.

:13:29. > :13:36.agree. But he is coming back from a very difficult season. Injured.

:13:36. > :13:42.Also Andrew Osagie, he ran very well in the opening heats, then

:13:42. > :13:47.losing in the final. This should be a competitive race. It should be a

:13:47. > :13:57.very good head-to-head between those guys. We get obsessed by

:13:57. > :14:01.times but it is also about competition. In the media we make

:14:01. > :14:07.so much about records, but at the end of the day, what people really

:14:07. > :14:12.appreciate, it doesn't matter whether it is six-year-old kits, it

:14:13. > :14:18.is the competition. Everyone gets on their feet when we don't know

:14:18. > :14:28.who is going to win. It is not anybody's race, but it is hard to

:14:28. > :14:55.

:14:55. > :15:02.his hand to hold off of Saatchi. -- Berridge on the inside. Just

:15:02. > :15:12.outside his personal best this year. Craig Stewart, from the Harrow club.

:15:12. > :15:17.

:15:17. > :15:22.He was second in the Scottish Joe Thomas. There's Michael Rimmer,

:15:22. > :15:27.who has had a great start to this year. He has had quite a few

:15:27. > :15:33.problems since the Diamond League, and I am not sure his confidence is

:15:33. > :15:43.as high as it needs to be. If it were the old Michael Rimmer comedy

:15:43. > :15:50.

:15:50. > :15:59.would say he will win. -- called Michael Rimmer, you would say.

:15:59. > :16:09.Steve Fennell from Tonbridge. Just getting back to his previous form.

:16:09. > :16:18.

:16:18. > :16:23.And Gareth Warburton, just losing out on a medal previously. Osagie

:16:23. > :16:27.ground as well as ever on that stretch for track. The others are

:16:27. > :16:34.going to have to dig deep to find a bit of confidence here. What sort

:16:34. > :16:44.of tactics will be employed? Will anybody wants to front run it? I am

:16:44. > :16:47.

:16:47. > :16:56.not sure they will. The big two in third and 4th place, Michael Rimmer

:16:56. > :17:04.just a tracking Andrew Osagie at the moment. Rimmer is not going to

:17:04. > :17:14.let Osagie out of his sight at all. Gareth Warburton and Joe Thomas are

:17:14. > :17:20.heading towards the Bell, 400 metres to go. There seems to be a

:17:20. > :17:25.bit of a coming together there. Michael Rimmer is trying to take

:17:25. > :17:31.the short route and wants to make sure he is not going to give Osagie

:17:31. > :17:35.a head start. This is where the danger is. This will be a real

:17:35. > :17:39.tussle down by home straight. The two big names moving towards the

:17:39. > :17:47.front. Rimmer is looking comfortable at the moment, but what

:17:47. > :17:52.has he got left? Osagie his kicking from the front, though. Strong

:17:52. > :18:02.running from Andrew Osagie. Can Michael Rimmer a fight back? Rimmer

:18:02. > :18:05.

:18:05. > :18:14.is trying to get there. A brilliant run from Osagie. Rimmer is having

:18:14. > :18:21.to bow to a man in form and a man full of confidence. Andrew Osagie,

:18:21. > :18:25.no concern of his. He did what he had to do. A big, big victory for

:18:25. > :18:29.him. He only has the B Standard at the moment, but if they are going

:18:29. > :18:35.to take the young and up and coming at that standard, he certainly

:18:35. > :18:45.qualifies at the moment. certainly does. Andrew Osagie, one

:18:45. > :18:46.

:18:46. > :18:53.of the most exciting two-that runners off recent years. -- two

:18:53. > :19:01.lap up runners. Andrew Osagie actually went away from Michael

:19:01. > :19:05.Rimmer. Michael Rimmer, five times the UK champion, but the better man

:19:05. > :19:15.got him on the day. Gareth Warburton was hanging on valiantly

:19:15. > :19:21.

:19:21. > :19:26.there for the bronze. Osagie, a new Make sure you say well done to the

:19:26. > :19:30.champion, Phil. The commentators are saying a big

:19:30. > :19:34.well done on your performance. When you are going head-to-head with

:19:34. > :19:42.somebody like Michael Rimmer, who has won so many times here, what is

:19:42. > :19:48.going through your head? Don't let him win! No, it has been amazing.

:19:48. > :19:55.To come here and win like that, it can only build my confidence for

:19:55. > :20:00.the next race. I do not know where it has come from. I trained so hard

:20:00. > :20:05.in the gym when I was injured. I have come back into form of really

:20:05. > :20:11.quickly. It is good to be in some sort of shape. When you get

:20:11. > :20:17.benefits like this, winning the championship, it is wonderful.

:20:17. > :20:21.know you came with your sister, Kelly, as at home watching today.

:20:21. > :20:27.When you deliver performances like this, is that somebody who would

:20:27. > :20:31.contact you before and? Probably not as much as I would like, but

:20:31. > :20:38.people like that, people like Steve Cram in the commentary box, giving

:20:38. > :20:43.me nice, kind words. It is amazing. It is good to hear their voices.

:20:43. > :20:53.lot of people will be watching you on YouTube. I am not sure about

:20:53. > :21:07.

:21:08. > :21:17.of this woman's high jump. -- women's long jump. She could

:21:17. > :21:21.compete in the Olympics because she has dual citizenship. She might

:21:21. > :21:27.have been denied the possibility of competing in the Olympic Games but

:21:27. > :21:32.has made that transition well. She has the B Standard and the A

:21:32. > :21:42.Standard in mixed competition. It looks like she could win here. Will

:21:42. > :21:42.

:21:42. > :21:51.she extend that lead? She does. She is bang on standard. She should be

:21:51. > :22:00.on her way to Daegu. Jessica Ennis, a season's best at 6.44 in third. A

:22:00. > :22:06.good performance for her. This is Kate Dennison, the former British

:22:06. > :22:11.record holder, and her third and final attempt at 4.56. And it is

:22:11. > :22:21.not to be. But she does have the A Standard. She will finish in second

:22:21. > :22:24.

:22:24. > :22:30.and will be going to Daegu with Holly Bleasdale.

:22:30. > :22:33.And well done to Andrew Osagie. We hope Michael Rimmer will get

:22:34. > :22:42.himself back into form. He will admit that was his second best.

:22:42. > :22:52.Gareth Warburton was third. Final chance for Lawrence Okoye in this

:22:52. > :22:52.

:22:53. > :22:57.discus. That falls well short. The British record holder, they are not

:22:57. > :23:05.going to measure that. He will have to rely on the decision of the

:23:05. > :23:12.selectors as stop it is an interesting one. Lawrence Okoye

:23:12. > :23:18.will be kicking himself at the chance he has missed today. Both

:23:18. > :23:26.him and Brett Morse struggling for form. Carl Myerscough is chasing

:23:26. > :23:33.the lead still. Not sure he has got it with that throw. I don't think

:23:33. > :23:39.he has. Myerscough, in second place, and he is guaranteed selection.

:23:39. > :23:49.Then, Brett Morse or Lawrence Okoye? The selectors will certainly

:23:49. > :23:50.

:23:50. > :23:54.have to mull over that one. Here's confirmation of the result. That

:23:54. > :23:57.decision as to will be the third person going to the World

:23:57. > :24:02.Championships, that rests with the selectors.

:24:02. > :24:11.JOHN INVERDALE: We still have several finals on the track and we

:24:11. > :24:16.will have the men's 200 metres in just his second. A bit of an upset

:24:16. > :24:26.in an earlier competition, where Marlon Devonish did not end up

:24:26. > :24:27.

:24:27. > :24:32.qualifying for this 200 metres final. When it came down to the

:24:32. > :24:41.fastest losers, Marlon Devonish was not fast enough. And then Aikines-

:24:41. > :24:46.Aryeetey. Somebody said to me, does he have a real name? You could see

:24:46. > :24:51.that stumble at the end and he had a slight hamstring pull, but even

:24:51. > :24:57.though he qualified for the final, he has pulled out of the eight

:24:57. > :25:03.lining up behind us. So, Devonish not going through, is that he

:25:03. > :25:10.shock? Yes. Usually assume he is going to come out and do a good

:25:10. > :25:14.performance in the 200. Maybe he misjudged it or just did not think

:25:14. > :25:23.it that the other guys in the subsequent heats were going to run

:25:23. > :25:29.so quickly. We do have Christian Malcolm behind us. He is here as

:25:29. > :25:34.night follows day. Yes, he always has a solid performance. He has had

:25:34. > :25:38.a great start so if he can duplicate that, he is one of the

:25:38. > :25:48.best in the field. It is not a tough field so he should be

:25:48. > :25:50.

:25:50. > :25:58.focusing on this. Let's see what happens now.

:25:58. > :26:08.COMMENTATOR: It is interesting that he is picked as the favourite.

:26:08. > :26:11.

:26:11. > :26:17.Here's the line-up. Aikines- Aryeetey will not run as he is

:26:17. > :26:27.injured. There's Fagan, European junior and bronze medallist four

:26:27. > :26:37.seasons ago. Then we have Richard Kilty, who sprung a surprise on

:26:37. > :26:39.

:26:39. > :26:49.Marlon Devonish. His best time, 20.53 this year. He has been flying.

:26:49. > :26:49.

:26:49. > :26:57.And then Leon Baptiste. James Ellington has been going quite well.

:26:57. > :27:05.This guy is in good shape. And then Christian Malcolm, defending UK

:27:05. > :27:15.champion, one of the fastest Britons ever, with a clucking of

:27:15. > :27:20.

:27:20. > :27:25.20.08. -- with a clucking. This really is a competitive final. And

:27:25. > :27:32.finally, Danny Talbot. They call him the Trowbridge Rocket. The

:27:32. > :27:38.youngest man in the field. Four athletes who line up in this final

:27:38. > :27:42.have already got the Daegu qualifying, so this, if anybody

:27:42. > :27:52.wants to make it onto the aeroplane, they have got to finish in the top

:27:52. > :28:07.

:28:07. > :28:10.two. Christian Malcolm, trying to Malcolm, just a bit sluggish.

:28:10. > :28:20.Ellington is just leading at the moment but Malcolm now turning it

:28:20. > :28:24.

:28:24. > :28:29.on. Almost three abreast here. Allington and Malcolm! Luke Fagan

:28:29. > :28:37.coming in. And a big, big smile across the face of Christian

:28:37. > :28:42.Malcolm. Well, they do say experience counts for a lot. And

:28:42. > :28:46.when you are running in the final of any sort of championship, that

:28:46. > :28:50.experience can mean the difference between success and failure. I hope

:28:50. > :28:55.James Ellington does not see his defeat as a failure, though. He is

:28:55. > :29:03.still a good athlete. But Christian Malcolm does it again.

:29:03. > :29:09.COLIN JACKSON: A very wise decision from them. He pushed himself around

:29:09. > :29:17.that turned and got himself into the running. Christian held his

:29:17. > :29:22.head, relied on his form and fluency to claw his way back and

:29:22. > :29:30.move just ahead to take this title. A great run by Christian Malcolm

:29:30. > :29:40.indeed. As they fly off Bisterne, looking around and wondering, who

:29:40. > :29:49.

:29:49. > :29:53.is the strongest? Have I got it? -- fly off at this at -- this turn. As

:29:53. > :30:03.he edges to the front, relief comes across his shoulders and he relaxes

:30:03. > :30:08.

:30:08. > :30:15.a little bit. He still has that Welt, this has been an incredibly

:30:15. > :30:24.busy but hugely successful weekend for you. A great weekend. I am in

:30:24. > :30:30.great shape. I've got to stay injury-free. This has given me the

:30:30. > :30:35.edge to go to the championships. I am looking forward to it. With the

:30:35. > :30:43.World Championships in mind, was it your aim to have that double?

:30:43. > :30:48.it was always the 200. But it is good training going through to the

:30:48. > :30:54.championships. It proved successful. Tell me about now and then. What

:30:54. > :30:57.are your plans? What will you be fine-tuning? It is all about

:30:57. > :31:02.preparing for the World Championships. We will get there,

:31:02. > :31:07.and get ready. And you have delivered so many times before.

:31:08. > :31:16.That is no reason why you cannot deliver a fine display. I am pretty

:31:16. > :31:20.confident. I am in good shape at the moment. I am really looking

:31:20. > :31:30.forward to the championships. the best going forward. Thank you

:31:30. > :31:35.

:31:35. > :31:42.champion in 1997, that is how long he has been around. That race, they

:31:42. > :31:49.were running into quite a stiff headwind. Luke Fagan, a surprising

:31:49. > :31:59.bronze-medallist. Jenny Meadows is 30 years old, yet

:31:59. > :32:20.

:32:20. > :32:28.she has never won the UK 800 metres. was a teenage world record holder.

:32:28. > :32:35.Holly Bleasdale, she is the national champion. She will go to

:32:35. > :32:43.Korea in good spirits. Kate Dennison also joins her with a

:32:43. > :32:51.jump-off for 0.40. We had their next 5,000-metre walk.

:32:51. > :33:01.-- we had a mixed 5,000-metre walk. A British record was broken. 90

:33:01. > :33:06.

:33:06. > :33:10.minutes 29, and Bosworth won it. -- 19 minutes. Joanne Jackson, she won

:33:10. > :33:15.this event for the 6th consecutive time. Outside of her British record

:33:15. > :33:22.figures by almost a minute. Nevertheless, a season's best, and

:33:22. > :33:29.she can now go to Korea, confident for the 20 kilometre walk. Season's

:33:29. > :33:37.best. Heather Lewis in second place and Natasha Webster in third.

:33:38. > :33:47.Looking back at the javelin. Goldie Sayers, she has thrown over 60

:33:48. > :33:48.

:33:48. > :33:56.metres this year so far. And that throw measured over 60. This was

:33:56. > :34:01.the third round for Jess and is. That was a season's best. -- Jess

:34:01. > :34:10.Ennis. Not a bad performance. A pretty decent weekend's work for

:34:10. > :34:20.the heptathlon world champion. Earlier on also, Myerscough, he was

:34:20. > :34:26.the champion in the shot put. He dominated this from start to finish.

:34:26. > :34:34.Well over 18 metres. His main focus has been the discus. He leaves

:34:34. > :34:44.Birmingham with the title. There is confirmation of that. Scott Ryder

:34:44. > :34:53.

:34:53. > :35:03.in second. Greg peered down in first senior outdoors championships,

:35:03. > :35:19.

:35:19. > :35:29.as well. Here is the whole of the just Judd before, she is 16-year-

:35:29. > :35:30.

:35:30. > :35:36.old. She is top of the under 17s. She is a real talent. She is a name

:35:36. > :35:45.for the future very much. Charlotte Best of Crawley, she is having a

:35:45. > :35:51.good season. She is coming into some good form. Lynsey Sharp,

:35:51. > :36:00.bronze medal in the European Under 23 championships. Not far away from

:36:00. > :36:05.the A Standard. Anna Jackson, 4th at the Commonwealth Games last year.

:36:05. > :36:15.The only one under two minutes, Jenny Meadows. World indoor silver-

:36:15. > :36:20.medallist. European bronze- medallist. Okoro is having a real

:36:20. > :36:28.battle to come back into fitness, and she has come on leaps and

:36:28. > :36:33.bounds in the last few weeks. Harewood is on lane to. Inside her,

:36:33. > :36:40.from the Shaftesbury club, Philippa Aukett. She must be absolutely

:36:40. > :36:50.delighted to have made this final against all these pigs names -- all

:36:50. > :37:07.

:37:07. > :37:14.Okoro looks like she is a lot slower. She has to wait until next

:37:14. > :37:19.week. She has to concentrate coming in the top two. Outside in the

:37:19. > :37:23.Green, Jessica Judd. She comes across. She looks for the big names

:37:23. > :37:29.inside her. Karen Harewood, reluctant to go to the front.

:37:29. > :37:34.Nobody wants to take the front. There goes Jenny Meadows. A Marilyn

:37:34. > :37:39.Okoro and Jenny Meadows know each other very well. Lynsey Sharp is

:37:39. > :37:43.coming along the outside along with this marvellous talent, just a good

:37:43. > :37:50.judge. Marilyn Okoro, as Steve was saying, as certain to be looking

:37:50. > :37:54.for a top two finish. A fast time is not it. It is about the

:37:55. > :38:01.Championship. Jenny Meadows leads them through 400 metres. Jessica

:38:01. > :38:07.Judd in second place and Marilyn Okoro now. 400 metres to go.

:38:07. > :38:17.Jackson taking closer orders, too. Meadow is trying to control it from

:38:17. > :38:20.

:38:20. > :38:25.the inside. Okoro on her shoulder. Lynsey Sharp, taking closer order.

:38:25. > :38:29.Jenny Meadows does not want to lose that position. Okoro might find

:38:29. > :38:36.this sort of race difficult because she has been trying to get her

:38:36. > :38:43.fitness back. She is not as race shop as the others. Here is Jackson.

:38:43. > :38:49.Meadows's response. They pick it up. They pull away. Meadows on the

:38:49. > :38:54.inside, Jackson on the outside, half a metre between them. Meadows

:38:54. > :39:00.kicks in. Jackson tries to respond. No doubt about the winner now.

:39:00. > :39:09.Jenny Meadows, her first senior title. Jackson keeps with a all the

:39:09. > :39:15.way through. Marilyn Okoro up after them. Easy in the end, I guess, but

:39:15. > :39:21.you have to hand it to emerge Jackson. She did not let up at all

:39:21. > :39:27.-- you have to hand it to Jackson. Jenny Meadows had to put her foot

:39:27. > :39:37.down. Finally, she has that senior title, and she can concentrate

:39:37. > :39:41.

:39:41. > :39:46.about getting herself ready for is time he stepped up to the plate.

:39:46. > :39:50.We want gold medals from now on. That is what Jenny Meadows will be

:39:50. > :39:56.aiming for at the World Championships. She had to contend

:39:56. > :40:02.with Emma Jackson, a great athlete. Jenny Meadows went over the line,

:40:02. > :40:06.and Jackson was closing. Okoro, third place. Jenny Meadows, the

:40:06. > :40:16.time wasn't fast, but she had a lot of competition, particularly over

:40:16. > :40:20.

:40:20. > :40:26.jump, and it was left to this man to take the title. This was his

:40:26. > :40:36.very first jump. He got the B Standard, and this was

:40:36. > :40:37.

:40:37. > :40:47.tantalisingly short. That was 16.83. Julian Reid, recently transferred

:40:47. > :40:53.

:40:53. > :40:58.For all the success Jenny Meadows has had, no UK titles until now.

:40:58. > :41:06.You did it until -- you did it in style. I have always wanted to win

:41:06. > :41:11.it. I make people aware of it. I felt a little bit of pressure. I

:41:11. > :41:17.said to myself, you need to do this. It is great getting global medals,

:41:17. > :41:22.but I want to be UK champion. And I have managed to do that. What about

:41:22. > :41:27.having to do three races back-to- back? Has that set you in good

:41:27. > :41:35.stead for what championships? Exactly. It is three rounds in 3.5

:41:35. > :41:40.days. And I have done three in 48 hours! So, very strong. It was good

:41:40. > :41:45.yesterday when Marilyn Okoro took it out in the semi-final,

:41:45. > :41:50.replicated the strong pace, and to come back today with a more

:41:50. > :41:58.tactical race, it is great. I feel like I have got all the skills at

:41:58. > :42:03.the moment. I am getting very excited. That is great to hear.

:42:03. > :42:08.Other people have not competed in this event and will be at the World

:42:08. > :42:12.Championships. Do you think some people are taking it easy? In the

:42:12. > :42:18.indoor championships, I did it again. I thought it would stand me

:42:18. > :42:27.in better stead. If you are a household name, a global medallist,

:42:27. > :42:33.I fully understand it could preparation is different. I am

:42:33. > :42:39.assured Charles has supported them. For me, the pressure was on. I was

:42:39. > :42:49.expected to go in, and it worked out well for me. We were shall all

:42:49. > :42:56.

:42:56. > :43:03.the very best going forward to the Young Jessica Judd, a good

:43:03. > :43:08.performance from her in 5th place. Earlier on this afternoon, we had

:43:08. > :43:14.the prospect of three good distance finals. The first of them, the

:43:14. > :43:24.3,000 metres steeplechase. It was a d I y four look gun. He led through

:43:24. > :43:29.

:43:29. > :43:39.the race. -- it really was a do-it- Bleasdale in the women's 5,000

:43:39. > :43:48.metres. She pushed on over the last three kilometres. There was a clear

:43:49. > :43:54.leader from her. Judy Bleasdale, a long way from the required

:43:54. > :44:01.qualification time. This was the winner from the women's

:44:01. > :44:09.steeplechase. It was his Scottish one, two, three. -- it was a

:44:09. > :44:14.Scottish one, two, three. She has yet to gain the A Standard, such is

:44:14. > :44:20.the competition in this country. I do not think she is going to the

:44:20. > :44:30.world championships, but she is here. That was a season's best for

:44:30. > :44:38.

:44:38. > :44:41.for the 400 metres final, coming up for the 400 metres final, coming up

:44:41. > :44:46.shortly. One last title to be decided.

:44:46. > :44:51.Martyn Rooney behind us. Let's talk about the women's 800. Jenny

:44:51. > :44:57.Meadows winning it, and looking good. She is looking fantastic. I

:44:57. > :45:04.was impressed with Jackson. She is running on the B Standard, but she

:45:04. > :45:09.is fantastic. This championships has delivered on a lot of levels. I

:45:09. > :45:13.hope those girls get to run in the world championships. That is one of

:45:13. > :45:19.the great debating points. Do you take people that have genuine

:45:19. > :45:23.chances or people that needs the experience? You have got to think

:45:24. > :45:27.about the financial side. Ultimately, the sport is about

:45:27. > :45:32.athletes, and if they can gain experience, I don't see why they

:45:32. > :45:37.shouldn't get on the plane. Yet again, medals have got to be won,

:45:37. > :45:45.so we have to make a strong team. How strong his British 400-metre

:45:45. > :45:53.running at the moment was mac not at all. It is a huge disappointment.

:45:53. > :45:59.The fastest time hasn't been very fast this year. I wouldn't be

:45:59. > :46:04.surprised if Dai Green wins it. He is the only one that is world class

:46:04. > :46:12.at this point make. Martyn Rooney has got an incredible talent, but

:46:12. > :46:22.he hasn't shown it. They have all good chances, but they are not very

:46:22. > :46:25.

:46:25. > :46:33.good this year. Shakes Drayton, she won it, her track event. But the

:46:33. > :46:43.men? Dai Green will take that to this event, he is a great runner.

:46:43. > :47:04.

:47:04. > :47:08.five. It is a good quality field, outside with Robert Tobin. The

:47:08. > :47:14.former European Under 23 champion just starting to get back into some

:47:14. > :47:18.sort of form. But all these men are so evenly matched. The surprise has

:47:18. > :47:27.been Chris Clarke name, who has missed a big chunk of the season

:47:27. > :47:34.with injury. Strachan will go out hard. A great personal best this

:47:34. > :47:44.year, and that will give Dai Greene something to chase. This man,

:47:44. > :47:45.

:47:45. > :47:51.looking for a place in the British 4x4 squad as well, I am sure. And

:47:51. > :47:57.then Rooney, the defending champion. Struggling again to get himself fit

:47:57. > :48:03.with a niggling injury problems. He has to deliver here. Andrew Steele,

:48:03. > :48:08.yet another trying to get back to some good form. And then on the

:48:08. > :48:16.inside, Luke Lennon-Ford. Bronze medallist at the under 23

:48:16. > :48:26.championships two, three weeks ago. So, Luke Lennon-Ford, Martyn Rooney,

:48:26. > :48:34.

:48:34. > :48:38.Richard Strachan and Chris Clarke all have the B Standard standard.

:48:38. > :48:48.The likes of Conrad Williams did not make it through and neither did

:48:48. > :49:00.

:49:00. > :49:04.Michael Bingham. They will be a little bit. Dai Greene giving

:49:04. > :49:08.chase to Strachan. It is young Chris Clarke to stop that the

:49:08. > :49:12.quickest, as he did in the heats. He ran in lane eight in the heats

:49:12. > :49:16.and he is doing the same again. He is giving everybody something to

:49:16. > :49:21.chase down that back straight. Rooney now starting to come into

:49:21. > :49:28.this, but it is Clarke still with the advantage. Dai Greene with some

:49:28. > :49:33.work to do but it is going to be the outside youngster. Rooney is

:49:33. > :49:43.starting to come into this. Clarke still has a metre or so. Rooney is

:49:43. > :49:49.trying to get there! 8 really good tussle! Rooney takes the win, and a

:49:49. > :49:54.season's best. That is more like it. Good run from Rooney, but how good

:49:54. > :49:57.is it to see that young man, Chris Clarke, coming back? He has hardly

:49:58. > :50:03.trained this year. Surely he is starting to run himself into

:50:03. > :50:08.contention. I know UK Athletics have been looking to Chris Clarke

:50:08. > :50:14.to come back and run well. A great run from him. His season only

:50:14. > :50:19.started a month or so ago and he pushed Rooney all away. Much, much

:50:19. > :50:29.better from Rooney. And he will be delighted to have run at that

:50:29. > :50:30.

:50:30. > :50:35.standard. Not yet A Standard, but a great runner. He ran a measured and

:50:35. > :50:40.calculated race. He did not go off too quickly. The more experienced

:50:40. > :50:45.Martyn Rooney is defending his experienced title. And how many

:50:45. > :50:50.times have we come to the final event where it has been the 400

:50:50. > :50:55.metres and it has been a terrific race in terms of passion, intensity

:50:55. > :51:05.and performance. And Martyn Rooney has done it once again. The

:51:05. > :51:10.champion is downstairs talking to A tremendous performance. Your last

:51:10. > :51:20.race and you delivered a great performance? It was not a bad run.

:51:20. > :51:21.

:51:21. > :51:27.I was happy with the win. Like -- I did what I came to do. Not yet the

:51:27. > :51:31.A Standard, but hopefully I will get involved with the big guys in

:51:31. > :51:41.the future. Your standards are so much higher so you are assessing

:51:41. > :51:41.

:51:41. > :51:47.things slightly differently? What is that really? I need to up

:51:47. > :51:52.my game. I am sure Michael will be saying the same thing. How far off

:51:52. > :51:59.are you? I just need to keep raising. I need to keep pushing it

:51:59. > :52:08.and get out better. I well sorted out, hopefully. Thank you for

:52:08. > :52:12.talking to us. All the best, Martyn. JOHN INVERDALE: It has been a

:52:12. > :52:15.really interesting second day at these championships. You could say

:52:15. > :52:20.Mo Farah gave a glorified training run but he put in a terrific kick

:52:20. > :52:25.on the back stretch. He is the 5,000 metres champion.

:52:25. > :52:31.The big a performance of the day goes to James Shane, and is this

:52:31. > :52:37.the future of British middle- distance running? He took the 1,500

:52:37. > :52:46.metre Crown. Perri Shakes-Drayton, the first

:52:46. > :52:51.person, male or the -- or 3 no, to take both of 400 flat and 400-metre

:52:51. > :52:55.hurdles. And here's Christian Malcolm coming

:52:55. > :53:03.through to win the 200-metre men's title.

:53:03. > :53:12.And also somebody coming through these championships. Jenny Meadows

:53:12. > :53:14.- of -- often not coming up with the goods, she does so here today.

:53:14. > :53:19.She will be in Daegu in a few weeks' time.

:53:19. > :53:23.Somebody who has had a very busy weekend it is Jessica Ennis. She

:53:23. > :53:27.has been competing in the long jump and javelin, and she is talking to

:53:27. > :53:31.the Phil. Some fantastic performances from

:53:31. > :53:40.you yesterday. You said you were tired. How did you feel this

:53:40. > :53:44.morning? A bit achy but I feel good. A bit disappointed with the javelin,

:53:44. > :53:50.of the mile-long jams Susan's best. That is what this weekend is about

:53:51. > :53:54.for you. A bit of tweaking and doing events back to back? Yes. I

:53:54. > :53:59.am disappointed with the javelin but it is good to come and no there

:53:59. > :54:04.are a few changes I need to make so why can go away and work on those

:54:04. > :54:13.before Daegu. Between now and then, what other plans for your

:54:13. > :54:18.competition? It has gone very quiet! I just need to prepare for

:54:18. > :54:23.the Worlds so I can get ready to compete. After this weekend, are

:54:23. > :54:27.you feeling in the place you want to be? I think so. I am happy with

:54:27. > :54:30.the way training has gone and with this week, so a few changes and I

:54:31. > :54:34.think I am good to go. Always good to talk to you.

:54:34. > :54:40.Thank you. JOHN INVERDALE: The athletics moves

:54:40. > :54:45.on to the Diamond League meeting at Crystal Palace on Friday. It is a

:54:45. > :54:55.sell-out on Saturday but there are a few tickets left on Friday night.

:54:55. > :54:57.

:54:57. > :55:01.If you have call the ticket number, As far as other things happening,

:55:01. > :55:11.the Rugby League Challenge Cup semi-finals on Saturday and another

:55:11. > :55:16.on Sunday. On Saturday, we also have a Rugby Union International.

:55:16. > :55:20.Highlights will be available on BBC Three erm and the football season

:55:20. > :55:28.begins proper next weekend, with the championship beginning next

:55:28. > :55:34.weekend, as well as Football Focus. It has been a good 48 hours, has it

:55:34. > :55:44.not? Absolutely. There were some outstanding results in the field

:55:44. > :55:44.

:55:44. > :55:49.events and some exciting races. Very enjoyable. And it has left you

:55:49. > :55:57.with a few selection dilemmas in the discus and things like that. Do

:55:57. > :56:01.you like that or would you rather it was cut and dry? No, it is good.

:56:01. > :56:06.The more athletes that go into the final, it is always good. I like

:56:06. > :56:10.that sort of headache all the time. And we were talking about this a

:56:10. > :56:15.few moments ago. You will have to discuss how big the team you take

:56:15. > :56:19.is going to be. How ruthless are you going to be? Were you be saying,

:56:19. > :56:23.they are in young and promising so we will take them for the

:56:23. > :56:31.experience, or, they are not a contender, so we will not take

:56:31. > :56:38.them? I am never ruthless. I am always there. You can be ruthlessly

:56:38. > :56:43.fair? We always look at it case-by- case. The ones who have had many

:56:43. > :56:53.chances and not use them are subject to debate. They might not

:56:53. > :56:57.go. Those decisions will be made on the 8th August. There are about 10

:56:57. > :57:04.people in the room who make a collective decision. I bet you have

:57:04. > :57:07.the final third eye? I have some input! Michael, it is the third

:57:07. > :57:12.time you have come to the trials. What have you made of the level of

:57:12. > :57:15.competition? What is important is that you look at this level of

:57:16. > :57:20.competition against the rest of the world. I had seen athletes across

:57:20. > :57:25.the board were the standard is much lower. His speaks well for the

:57:25. > :57:34.chances of a lot of athletes here for this weekend. -- this speaks

:57:34. > :57:38.well. I would not get so caught up in how we compete against the rest

:57:38. > :57:48.of the world as opposed to focusing on what the best of these athletes

:57:48. > :57:51.can achieve his. Focusing on individual accomplishments. Because

:57:52. > :57:55.this is the year before the championships and everybody is

:57:55. > :58:00.going to be upping their game from here one out, so you also want to

:58:00. > :58:05.make sure you don't get ahead of yourself. There's been a lot of

:58:05. > :58:11.talk about London 2012 and that is not what this is about. Thank you

:58:11. > :58:16.to all of you. Lastly, what is the middle target for Daegu? We had six

:58:16. > :58:26.in Berlin, the last World Championships. Our six is eight in

:58:26. > :58:27.
