:00:53. > :00:57.Welcome to the ultimate one-night stand in track and field. The most
:00:57. > :01:01.famous athlete ticks meeting over them all at the Weltklasse in
:01:01. > :01:08.Zurich. Many thousands of people on these terraces. They have been here
:01:08. > :01:12.for hours to get the best viewpoint to see 19 Gold medallists, all
:01:12. > :01:18.competing in this meeting of the Diamond League summer. They have
:01:18. > :01:23.staged this, Weltklasse - world class in German. This new stadium
:01:23. > :01:30.is four years old. In the decade, one of the economic capitals of the
:01:30. > :01:38.world has backed 25 world records. So many of the races are re-runs of
:01:38. > :01:45.the Korea games last week. Just about anybody who is anybody
:01:45. > :01:50.is here in Zurich tonight w the exception of Mr Bolt. He will be in
:01:50. > :01:56.Brussels next week for the culmination of the diamond season.
:01:56. > :02:00.Colin and Denise are here. They were commenting on events in Daegu
:02:00. > :02:04.and we will talk about what is happening here tonight. They treat
:02:04. > :02:09.the track and field stars here like movie stars. Before the meeting
:02:09. > :02:19.began they were wheeled around the track. In a land of ski jumpers and
:02:19. > :02:19.
:02:19. > :02:29.Roger Federer it is interesting to see the ped stalls on which they --
:02:29. > :02:42.
:02:42. > :02:48.pedistalls on which they are placed. to be. One particular name to look
:02:48. > :02:58.out for at 8pm, the new world 100 metre champion, Yohan Blake, up
:02:58. > :03:01.
:03:01. > :03:11.against the man who lost in deg gue because of injury, -- Daegu because
:03:11. > :03:18.
:03:18. > :03:24.happens in that relay. The runners are being introduced to the crowd.
:03:24. > :03:31.Let's go up to cram cram cram n the commentary box. I suppose the key
:03:31. > :03:36.thing is how tired are performers going to be so soon after winning a
:03:36. > :03:40.world title? I was tird coming back. I did not have to -- tired coming
:03:40. > :03:45.back. I did not have to compete out there. They are professional, they
:03:45. > :03:49.travel the world. Hopefully in this first one here we are looking
:03:49. > :03:59.forward to a cracking race. Seven of the finalists from the World
:03:59. > :04:25.
:04:25. > :04:29.up an injury between Crystal Palace and Daegu.
:04:29. > :04:39.Demus getting closer to the world record. Now they get to do it all
:04:39. > :04:49.over again. 52.47. Just two tenths she won by
:04:49. > :04:50.
:04:50. > :04:57.and just 13 hundredths of the world record.
:04:57. > :05:03.For Spencer, she leads the Diamond race, actually. Pretty much
:05:03. > :05:09.guaranteed winning it. Double points here for the final.
:05:09. > :05:16.So, away they go. Our first Diamond race of the evening.
:05:16. > :05:21.Demus started quickly. Walker is on the outside of her. The two rising
:05:21. > :05:27.together. If anything Walker pulling her head a little bit.
:05:27. > :05:32.Walker doing well. Now Demus starting to come in.
:05:32. > :05:37.Hardly anything in it. Spencer is trying to get ahead of Walker and
:05:37. > :05:42.Demus. Now Demus around the top bend, always leaning on that
:05:42. > :05:52.outside leg, Demus. She's in such good form. She starts to forge
:05:52. > :05:52.
:05:52. > :06:01.ahead. Walker trying to come back. Spencer starts to come away.
:06:01. > :06:09.Kaliese Spencer half a length ahead. Walker second. Demus for third.
:06:09. > :06:16.Well, some consolation for Kaliese Spencer. That injury she picked up
:06:16. > :06:22.a after Crystal Palace pretty much put pay to her chances in Daegu.
:06:22. > :06:28.Coming back to her best. Spencer has been in good form all year.
:06:28. > :06:33.Tonight Demus was a little tired. agree with you. Demus may be jaded
:06:33. > :06:42.after her success. She's been the bridesmaid on so many occasions in
:06:42. > :06:47.this event. To take that world tiet -- title would make her happy. She
:06:47. > :06:52.will be disappointed picking up that injury after London. Hopefully
:06:52. > :06:58.she feels better after that. Out of the blocks, I was watching the
:06:58. > :07:02.ladys from the off. Demus was a bit jaded. She was not as aggressive to
:07:02. > :07:11.that first barrier. Although the technique was holding well and her
:07:11. > :07:15.form strong, she didn't quite have it in her legs this time.
:07:15. > :07:19.I heard Sally say that Demus, if she's going to break the world
:07:19. > :07:25.record, needs to hurdle on alternative legs. What is your
:07:25. > :07:29.thoughts on that? I agree with Sally in that sense.
:07:29. > :07:39.She has been a world record holder. She knows how important that ninth
:07:39. > :07:51.
:07:51. > :07:56.hurdle is. Hey, let's see what shortly. Here is an outline of some
:07:57. > :08:00.of the big names you can see between now and 9pm this evening.
:08:00. > :08:06.Several contenders, I would suggest for the outstanding performance in
:08:06. > :08:10.Korea. Sally Pearson will top many lists.
:08:10. > :08:15.The fourth fastest time in the women's hurdles.
:08:15. > :08:20.After that disqualification, in the 100 metres, it was left for Yohan
:08:20. > :08:30.Blake to win Gold for Jamaica. Tonight Asafa Powell is looking to
:08:30. > :08:38.hunt him down. And Blake's counter part, jet jet -
:08:38. > :08:44.- Jeter runs against Alison Fenix. In a World Championship of drama
:08:44. > :08:52.one of the main beneficiaries was Andy Turner. It is one of the races
:08:52. > :09:02.of the evening. One of the races of the World Championships was the
:09:02. > :09:09.
:09:09. > :09:15.women's 800 metres. Jenny can exact D Cram cram cram, if we talk to you
:09:15. > :09:25.about Mo Farrar's victory, the mental fortitude shown in that 500
:09:25. > :09:26.
:09:26. > :09:31.metres, four days ago, was fantastic, wasn't it? -- Steve Cram.
:09:31. > :09:35.He came back in the 1500 metres, when everybody thought he must find
:09:35. > :09:39.it difficult to muster up his confidence again. Mo trusted on
:09:39. > :09:45.what he's been doing, getting ahead and just timing it right this time.
:09:45. > :09:49.He didn't time it right in the 100 metres.
:09:49. > :09:54.That was the justification. He is the best distance runner the world
:09:54. > :09:58.this year. It is only right he won the World Championships. Watching
:09:58. > :10:04.as you were, during that last 400 metres, as they were massing behind
:10:04. > :10:07.him and he fought them off, one after the other, were you thinking,
:10:07. > :10:13.at some point someone will come past? I think he ran a different
:10:13. > :10:16.race to the 10,000. I remember being on the edge of my seat for
:10:16. > :10:22.both races. There was something commanding about how he approached
:10:22. > :10:26.it. In that last straight he seemed to have the measure. He had the
:10:26. > :10:30.legs, he ran, only what I can describe, as the perfect race.
:10:30. > :10:36.must talk about Green. On the bipblgd he was not going to be the
:10:36. > :10:40.-- bend he was not going to be the Gold medallist? I was confident in
:10:40. > :10:44.what he could do. He was confident in what he could do in that
:10:44. > :10:48.position. He knows, himself, that he's beaten everybody in the world
:10:48. > :10:53.coming off this final turn. He believed he was strong and if he
:10:53. > :10:57.had that heart of the Welsh dragon in him it would take him to the
:10:57. > :11:04.finish. He saw the line. He got hungry. He wanted it more than
:11:04. > :11:08.anything else. What a tremendous victory.
:11:08. > :11:15.For every up there's a down. I am not sure how much of a down they
:11:15. > :11:20.are. How much was a down was Jess Ennis not winning? It started early
:11:20. > :11:25.on with her Hurdling. Her 12.79 she achieved going into the
:11:25. > :11:29.championships were playing on her mind. The disappointment of her
:11:29. > :11:33.high jump not over one metre 90. Which she is well capable of. It
:11:33. > :11:37.was the fact she could not throw over 40 metres in the javelin.
:11:37. > :11:42.Which I know she can do any day in the week. What happened for her
:11:42. > :11:45.mentally, the fact she was not in the same pool as the eventual
:11:45. > :11:50.winner, she was not allowed to be competitive. She had too much time
:11:50. > :11:55.to think about what she needed to do. That was her downfall. The
:11:55. > :12:00.question is; will she be back? I believe she will be. The danger now
:12:00. > :12:08.is she does not train too hard. She has feet very susceptible to injury.
:12:08. > :12:16.She has to be careful, but measured. I think she will be able to come
:12:16. > :12:26.back. There is a three-pronged battle for Phil lip to get a medal.
:12:26. > :12:26.
:12:26. > :12:31.He was beaten by a superb jump. That position of second behind
:12:31. > :12:35.17.96 is not embrar racing for him at all -- embarrassing for him at
:12:35. > :12:40.all. We know he can jump around that 17-18 mark. If he can do that,
:12:40. > :12:50.I am sure one day that Olympic title may land on his lap. That
:12:50. > :12:57.
:12:57. > :13:03.will be great. Here we go with the D anybody who is anybody is in this
:13:03. > :13:08.field. We have the 5,000 metre world champion who leads the
:13:08. > :13:14.Diamond League. She will start in this second group on the outside of
:13:14. > :13:20.the track. Seven Kenyans all together. It was the Kenyans that
:13:20. > :13:30.dominated the distance running in da gu. They were brilliant -- in
:13:30. > :13:47.
:13:47. > :13:52.missed out. One of the athletes of the year is the reigning
:13:52. > :13:56.championship of 10,000 metres and in cross-country too. She's been
:13:56. > :14:03.absolutely unbeatable on the track this year. She is the Diamond
:14:03. > :14:11.League leader. Two athletes on the outside are
:14:11. > :14:16.likely to take the pace early on. It will be a fast one.
:14:16. > :14:20.Away we go. 12-and-a-half laps. The pace which is being set here
:14:20. > :14:24.tonight is more than likely going to bring us home in the world's
:14:24. > :14:32.fastest time so far this year. As you can imagine, the conditions
:14:32. > :14:38.here are far kind tore the athletes than of course they were in Daegu.
:14:38. > :14:42.Very cool, not very much wind in this beautifully lowered stadium in
:14:42. > :14:48.terms of where sea level is. It is lower than that. It is well
:14:48. > :14:58.sheltered. Certainly the pace- makers have gone off quickly let by
:14:58. > :15:25.
:15:25. > :15:32.win a World Championship double, I don't think she gets the credit she
:15:32. > :15:36.probably deserves. They have asked for a steady pace. Vivian is a
:15:36. > :15:41.class runner. She is dominating this year. She deserves all of the
:15:41. > :15:51.accolades she is receiving. certainly has. She's back in
:15:51. > :15:53.
:15:53. > :16:03.seventh place wearing a red vest. We've got Sally Kipyego in third
:16:03. > :16:14.
:16:15. > :16:20.place. The athlete in fourth place there is Mercy Cherono. Valerie
:16:20. > :16:30.Adams took the win in the women's shot putt and took the Diamond
:16:30. > :16:33.
:16:33. > :16:41.League points standing. Valley Adams unbeaten since Zurich last
:16:41. > :16:47.year. -- Valerie Adams unbeaten since Zurich last year. She's won
:16:47. > :16:49.the Diamond League. After that we saw the men's competition. Dylan
:16:49. > :16:59.Armstrong the outstanding world number one couldn't quite produce
:16:59. > :17:09.it when it mattered in Daegu. He lost to David Storl of Germany.
:17:09. > :17:12.
:17:12. > :17:22.Here, he threw 21.63m. You can see there, Central Station looking like
:17:22. > :17:28.
:17:28. > :17:35.it's never looked before, I guess, still the pacemakers. They went
:17:35. > :17:43.through the first kilometre in 2:56. The main protagonists and the tiny
:17:43. > :17:46.woman in red just out of picture now is moving through the field.
:17:46. > :17:52.Just have a look back for Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot. Quite happy not
:17:52. > :18:00.to go with the pacemakers, Steve? That is her in the red. She is
:18:00. > :18:07.moving up to get with one or two of her team-mates. Just at the back of
:18:07. > :18:13.that group, something to keep an eye on tonight, Shalane Flanagan.
:18:13. > :18:16.She will have her eye on the American record. She is in good
:18:16. > :18:26.form. She's come close a couple of times to the American record. I am
:18:26. > :18:31.sure she will be hoping she can hang on to this group. Perfect for
:18:31. > :18:37.her. She is on the back of that group. This is nice and steady to
:18:37. > :18:42.be honest for the likes of Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot. When you run
:18:43. > :18:48.all those tough races and Daegu was not as hot as a lot of people were
:18:48. > :18:56.expecting, Paul. It was bound to be draining and it was for Helen
:18:56. > :19:01.Clitheroe. There she is. They are adrift of the leading group.
:19:01. > :19:11.has raced a lot this year since winning that European Indoor Chaim
:19:11. > :19:13.
:19:13. > :19:17.ship at 3,000m -- European Indoor Championship at 3,000m. Helen
:19:17. > :19:24.Clitheroe looking very steady at the minute. But the leaders, the
:19:24. > :19:30.leading group is spread out over 25 metres as the Polish athlete leads
:19:30. > :19:40.them through with eight laps to go. The leaders are spread out over 25
:19:40. > :20:17.
:20:18. > :20:21.metres and Helen Clitheroe is about Makusha. The only person to jump
:20:21. > :20:31.over eight metres. The second kilometre looked as if it was a
:20:31. > :20:32.
:20:32. > :20:36.little bit quicker. Certainly on course for a quick time here. Mercy
:20:36. > :20:44.Cherono is going to try and take them through the next kilometre and
:20:44. > :20:49.a bit, and there is the world's outstanding distance runner at the
:20:49. > :20:56.moment - Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot. Still happy with the pace that is
:20:56. > :21:00.being set. It is not that quick. They ran a 2:56 and a 2:58 - that
:21:00. > :21:07.is easy running to be honest. I'm surprised that they are as
:21:07. > :21:14.stretched out as this. They were asked for 5:50 at 2K and they were
:21:14. > :21:18.four seconds off that. To be honest, if she gets that far, it will slow
:21:18. > :21:28.down even more. Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot is such a good kicker.
:21:28. > :21:38.She can outkick anybody. At the moment, Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot
:21:38. > :21:39.
:21:39. > :21:43.is the quickest. Ran 58 seconds on the last lap. The sort of sprinting
:21:43. > :21:50.at the end of a distance race that no other woman is able to stick
:21:50. > :21:57.with at the moment. There she is, running with Linet Chepkwemoi Masai,
:21:58. > :22:07.just behind her. Masai the former champion and Cheruiyot the new
:22:08. > :22:23.
:22:23. > :22:33.champion. The men's discus was better than the long jump. This is
:22:33. > :22:38.
:22:38. > :22:46.Virgilijus Alekna. That was second place. He wins the Diamond race for
:22:46. > :22:52.Alekna. 39 years old. Still in fabulous form. Was to be his best
:22:52. > :23:02.throw. He had to give second place to this man, Robert Harting. Went
:23:02. > :23:04.
:23:04. > :23:14.to Daegu and successfully defended his world title. A monster of a man.
:23:14. > :23:20.
:23:20. > :23:27.That was 67.02cm in the second round. -- that was 67.02m in the
:23:27. > :23:32.second round. He takes the competition here in Zurich. Just
:23:32. > :23:41.coming up towards three-and-a-half laps to go. No change at all in the
:23:41. > :23:51.order. Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot in exactly the same place, Masai has
:23:51. > :23:57.
:23:57. > :24:01.has closed in. Now the -- Masai has closed in. It is still Mercy
:24:01. > :24:08.Cherono as they come into the home straight. This time when they go
:24:08. > :24:18.through the bell, or through the finish line rather, they've got
:24:18. > :24:19.
:24:19. > :24:25.four laps to go. So Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot, Linet Chepkwemoi Masai,
:24:25. > :24:31.and it is very steady. This is very slow running. I'm surprised there
:24:31. > :24:35.aren't others there. Shalane Flanagan is miles off the pace.
:24:35. > :24:41.Helen Clitheroe not looking as if she is going to get anywhere near a
:24:41. > :24:45.fast time for her either. I guess what we are seeing is a lot of very
:24:45. > :24:55.tired athletes. Not a all of them were in Daegu. They are just
:24:55. > :24:59.
:24:59. > :25:05.gathering. No-one wants to take this on. Masai might fancy it a bit.
:25:05. > :25:12.I suppose it is understandable, certainly for the likes of
:25:12. > :25:17.Cheruiyot. It's being set up very nicely for Vivian Jepkemoi
:25:17. > :25:22.Cheruiyot to show us how quick she is over the last 400. Her size
:25:22. > :25:30.doesn't tell the whole story in what sort of devastating finish
:25:30. > :25:34.she's got. When you look back at the time that Mercy Cherono was
:25:34. > :25:39.supposed to take them through 3,000m, we were looking at
:25:39. > :25:46.something round about 8:45. They are about seven or eight seconds
:25:46. > :25:50.outside of that. Now, Linet Chepkwemoi Masai takes it on.
:25:50. > :25:54.Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot goes with her. Now the pace may be beginning
:25:54. > :26:04.to increase a little bit. Mercy Cherono has dropped out, the
:26:04. > :26:07.
:26:07. > :26:10.pacemaker. Linet Chepkwemoi Masai leads. Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot,
:26:10. > :26:15.certainly not just the world's outstanding distance runner this
:26:15. > :26:19.year, one of the world's outstanding athletes. Just on her
:26:19. > :26:24.shoulder, exactly where she should be. This time there will be two
:26:24. > :26:32.laps to go. Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot looks very comfortable,
:26:32. > :26:35.as does Linet Chepkwemoi Masai. It's being set up for Vivian
:26:35. > :26:40.Jepkemoi Cheruiyot. Everybody that is in that group, she's outkicked
:26:40. > :26:50.on two or three occasions this year. She knows what she is doing. She
:26:50. > :26:53.
:26:53. > :26:58.normally likes to get them moving a little bit. Kenyan women have been
:26:58. > :27:08.so much better than the Ethiopians this year. Really disappointing
:27:08. > :27:08.
:27:08. > :27:14.performances from the Ethiopians. Kenya have had the upper hand this
:27:15. > :27:21.year. With under 600m to go, Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot is winding it up
:27:21. > :27:26.nicely. This time they want to hear the bell. It's been a long, hard
:27:26. > :27:32.season for all of them. Take into account Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot
:27:32. > :27:37.is a World Champion on the track at 5,000m and 10,000m - and cross-
:27:37. > :27:46.country as well. Those three are getting away. Vivian Jepkemoi
:27:46. > :27:52.Cheruiyot leads, the World Champion. She's winding it up. That was a 65
:27:52. > :28:02.lap, the previous one. Then she kicks on from there. Moves away
:28:02. > :28:03.
:28:03. > :28:09.nicely and then it will get quicker and quicker. Sally Kipyego goes
:28:09. > :28:13.past Linet Chepkwemoi Masai. This could be a repeat of what happened
:28:13. > :28:16.in the World Championships, Sally Kipyego finished behind Vivian
:28:16. > :28:22.Jepkemoi Cheruiyot. They are running away from Linet Chepkwemoi
:28:22. > :28:25.Masai. It's one and two in the World Championships in Daegu, one
:28:25. > :28:29.and two here. Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot going for an unbeaten
:28:30. > :28:35.record on the track this season and of course the Diamond League
:28:35. > :28:45.victory. Sally Kipyego is coming a little bit. Vivian Jepkemoi
:28:45. > :28:46.
:28:46. > :28:51.Cheruiyot gets it. Kipyego in second. Masai in third. So 14:30.11,
:28:52. > :28:57.a new meeting record here in Zurich. No doubt about the winner, Vivian
:28:57. > :29:04.Jepkemoi Cheruiyot. Number one in the world, just about right across-
:29:04. > :29:14.the-board. She's still good at doing that. She was a little tired
:29:14. > :29:15.
:29:15. > :29:20.herself tonight. Only a 60 second last lap! She had 2:05 for the last
:29:20. > :29:25.800m. That shows you what she can do. Even then she was a little
:29:25. > :29:34.tired to be honest. She is capable of running somewhere down I think
:29:34. > :29:39.in the 14:10s. Here is Helen Clitheroe coming in - 25, 26, 27 -
:29:39. > :29:43.it's been a tough summer for Helen. She's hoping that she can build and
:29:43. > :29:49.come back and make the team for 2012. She wants to run the distance
:29:49. > :29:59.events in 2012. It has been a tough summer for her. There we have the
:29:59. > :30:00.
:30:00. > :30:10.final result. 14:30.10 - a Weltklasse record for Vivian
:30:10. > :30:27.
:30:27. > :30:33.man who won the title, only to have D a quick point from during the
:30:33. > :30:39.course of that 5,000 metres, we saw the shot putts outside the railway
:30:39. > :30:43.station. You wonder why we have the Diamond League meetings why certain
:30:43. > :30:48.events like the shot putt and pole vault are not taken to the people,
:30:48. > :30:54.as opposed to the people coming to them. You need to recognise the
:30:54. > :30:58.sport towards the people. Here in Zurich it is one of the major
:30:58. > :31:03.streets. We have seen it in Formula One, when they close off regent's
:31:03. > :31:08.street to have the procession of the cars. Perhaps it is something...
:31:08. > :31:14.We have it over two days too. We could have it that way. On the
:31:14. > :31:18.malwould be fantastic. We do -- the Mall would be fantastic.
:31:18. > :31:23.Perhaps in our own special way, we're the ones who gave the idea to
:31:23. > :31:28.Zurich! Let's hear from Andy Turner now.
:31:28. > :31:32.Obviously a bronze medallist in Daegu, albeit by default. I am
:31:32. > :31:37.overjoyed. I think it takes away from it the fact that I didn't
:31:37. > :31:43.cross the line in third. Had I done that, it would have been a
:31:43. > :31:48.different kind of emotion. I've got a medal sitting at home. It's
:31:48. > :31:53.brilliant. It is a dream come true. What do you think it will do for
:31:53. > :31:59.you as an athlete - will it make a big difference? I don't think so. I
:31:59. > :32:05.have my goals firmly set on winning medals legitimately.
:32:05. > :32:13.You know, having stood on the rostrum again, my third consecutive
:32:13. > :32:19.championship, that feeling is so addictive. That is why I'll go to
:32:19. > :32:23.Florida to train. I want to come to London next year and challenge
:32:23. > :32:27.those boys, you know I really want to get in the mix with them guys.
:32:27. > :32:31.There is a gap to close. That's why I'm going out there. Hopefully, if
:32:31. > :32:36.I can close that gap, I will be next year in London. He made the
:32:36. > :32:41.point himself. He was on the podium at the World Championships. If you
:32:41. > :32:44.hear the rest of the interview, he does not accept he accepts that
:32:44. > :32:48.meddled and he does. You cannot be held accountable for anything that
:32:48. > :32:54.goes on in the race. He was at the right place, at the right time.
:32:54. > :33:00.He's had a great season. That is the reward for somebody who works
:33:00. > :33:04.hard and is prepared to make changes. What do you make of the
:33:04. > :33:10.disqualification? There was no intention from Robles to interrupt
:33:10. > :33:16.the race. You know, I have to say, it seems to me that this is
:33:16. > :33:22.something that you can't - the rules say this is something that
:33:22. > :33:26.happens, and Robles was clear away, and he was being closed. You can
:33:26. > :33:33.see that incident take place. That one looks like there was more
:33:33. > :33:40.contact. However, when you are in full flow, would an athlete want to
:33:40. > :33:45.jeopardise his race by colliding another person? Is the point here
:33:45. > :33:51.intent? Did he intend to do that? There is never an intent to commit
:33:51. > :33:58.those type of mistakes. He made the mistake prior to the incident
:33:58. > :34:03.happening. He got too close to the barrier. He jumped it and let it go
:34:03. > :34:07.too wide to get his balance back. If he had been a millimetre to the
:34:07. > :34:11.right, the collision would not have happened. It would not have been
:34:11. > :34:15.strong enough a hit to put him off. Many times that we've had battles,
:34:16. > :34:21.you know, when things are going like that, it happens all the time.
:34:21. > :34:26.I've had it happen to me on numerous occasions. Was that the
:34:26. > :34:30.right call? If they want to play by the rules, the answer is yes. China
:34:30. > :34:36.made a protest. They looked at images head-on. The answer was yes,
:34:36. > :34:44.it is part of that rule. One thing we talked about, while we were away,
:34:44. > :34:50.was the fact that he didn't gain anything from that decision from
:34:50. > :34:59.that disqualification. What was the point? That was my argument as well.
:34:59. > :35:03.An interesting point. Richardson and Turner benefited. Great for us!
:35:03. > :35:11.There was another disqualification at Daegu. More of that later. I can
:35:11. > :35:15.see the runners for the men's 110 hurdles.
:35:16. > :35:24.Just a note, my first race was 30 Just a note, my first race was 30
:35:24. > :35:30.years ago. A man on that race won 12.3 in the 110 hurdles. He was
:35:30. > :35:34.presented with an award. This promises to be another exciting
:35:34. > :35:39.instalment. A new world champion, you saw there, Jason Richardson n
:35:39. > :35:49.the middle. He has got Oliver and Robles either side of him and
:35:49. > :36:11.
:36:11. > :36:17.Andrew Turner is in lane three. League, it is normally four points
:36:17. > :36:27.to win. It is eight points here. Oliver can be caught. Robles is
:36:27. > :36:31.
:36:31. > :36:38.three points behind him. Kundert in lane one.
:36:38. > :36:42.Andrew Turner telling me his achillies is sore. He feels a bit
:36:42. > :36:47.beaten up. He will give it another throw of the dice. He's off to
:36:47. > :36:52.train in Florida for the winter. And this will be one man who'll
:36:52. > :36:55.have in his sight next year. What a disappointing championship for
:36:55. > :37:00.David Oliver. His best race was back in June.
:37:00. > :37:07.Whereas this man got better and better as the summer went on. Yes,
:37:07. > :37:12.he was second theatrically until Robles was disqualified. It was a
:37:12. > :37:19.great race nonetheless. This man, as we have heard, had that title
:37:19. > :37:23.taken away from him. Will he make up for it here
:37:23. > :37:32.tonight? Dayron Robles - world record holder and the Olympic
:37:32. > :37:41.champion, don't forget. Aries Merritt, in seven.
:37:41. > :37:46.A former world junior champion. Great Britain with two men in the
:37:47. > :37:54.world final. I know William Sharman, afterwards, he would have after his
:37:54. > :38:04.fourth place in the worlds would have looked with envy at the medal.
:38:04. > :38:06.
:38:06. > :38:11.Joel Brown in lane nine. Coached by Johnson, who will spend time with
:38:11. > :38:18.him this winter. So can Richardson show that that world title was
:38:18. > :38:27.something he deserves? Can he run Robles close? Richardson, the new
:38:27. > :38:34.man trying to join Robles. David Oliver, certainly something to
:38:34. > :38:44.prove after his poor form in Daegu. How close can Andrew Turner get to
:38:44. > :38:48.
:38:48. > :38:51.those three? The crowd goes silent.
:38:51. > :38:54.Clearly away, Robles with the best start. Richardson going with him.
:38:54. > :38:57.Oliver nowhere at the moment. Andrew Turner in third place. Look
:38:57. > :39:03.at this, Robles is a yard ahead. Richardson trying to get back to
:39:03. > :39:09.him. It's Robles all the way. Oliver, third. Then Merritt and
:39:09. > :39:15.turner. -- and Turner. 13.02. He won't mind
:39:15. > :39:20.about the time. Won it cleanly this time.
:39:20. > :39:25.No doubt about it! Richardson ran him close. He's certainly next year,
:39:25. > :39:30.I think Richardson will be up there contending. But, not the victory, I
:39:30. > :39:34.am sure, he would have liked at the end of the season. He wanted the
:39:34. > :39:39.world title, but settling here for, I think he'll also win the Diamond
:39:39. > :39:44.race as well. No doubt about our winner. He will be happy with that.
:39:44. > :39:48.He will be happy, Steve. He had a good, strong solid start. Once he
:39:48. > :39:53.got into the lead he can hold his form. Make no mistakes he took this
:39:53. > :40:03.victory and took it well indeed over the current world champion.
:40:03. > :40:04.
:40:04. > :40:12.Out of the blocks, Dayron Robles takes seven strides into that first
:40:12. > :40:19.hurbdle. He has a fluid leg. That - - hurdle. He has a fluid leg. That
:40:19. > :40:24.makes him stand head and shoulders above anybody else. Nice and solid.
:40:24. > :40:28.David Oliver, look at him, pounding his way, going past Andrew Turner
:40:28. > :40:32.to sneak into that third position. Andy's had a great season. He will
:40:32. > :40:39.not complain with what he's done. Of course, to take the Bronze Medal
:40:39. > :40:46.this year has been a real solid performance of his.
:40:46. > :40:50.Andy Turner, coming in fifth place there in around about 13.41. A
:40:50. > :40:55.season's best for Robles, which is surprising. That win, by
:40:55. > :40:59.Michaellation, means he will win the Diamond race as well. In fact
:40:59. > :41:04.we can confirm that. Oliver started with a lead of three points. He
:41:04. > :41:10.lost out because of the double points. Robles wins it from Oliver
:41:10. > :41:15.and Richardson takes third spot. Andy, it's been a long old season.
:41:15. > :41:19.It really has. My body's starting to fall apart again. My achillies
:41:19. > :41:23.pain is coming back. I am trying to see out the end of the season. I
:41:23. > :41:27.don't think it will get any worse. It's not going to be a long-term
:41:27. > :41:32.thing. You know, I'll sit out the season, have a good rest and come
:41:32. > :41:36.back next year, hopefully stronger. How much are you basking in the
:41:36. > :41:41.glory of Daegu? I got on with things to be fair. I was training
:41:41. > :41:46.the next day, because it wasn't - I didn't cross the line in third. I
:41:46. > :41:51.could not celebrate as a medallist. So, you know, I kind of accepted
:41:51. > :41:55.fourth. So to be handed bronze, obviously I will take the medal. I
:41:55. > :42:00.could not fully celebrate that. Yeah, obviously I'm over the moon
:42:00. > :42:04.to have the Bronze Medal. operate within this world, so
:42:04. > :42:08.Robles is not the greatest English Speaker, probably no sense asking
:42:08. > :42:14.him. Did you sense in the zone that he wanted to win tonight to make a
:42:14. > :42:22.point? Definitely. As soon as he was disqualified I knew he would
:42:22. > :42:25.come here and put down what he D he's a quality athlete. He's the
:42:25. > :42:33.best hurdler in history. He wants to make a point. He was the best
:42:33. > :42:37.and you know he did that tonight. Andy Turner. Now, what has been
:42:37. > :42:43.happening in field events over the past few minutes?
:42:43. > :42:53.D early stages. This is the Olympic champion and the world record
:42:53. > :43:07.
:43:07. > :43:11.hand was breathtaking. The first round for the recordholder. Not
:43:12. > :43:20.quite the right angle. As you can see it will be an early lead. For
:43:20. > :43:28.the world record holder. Coached by the world record holder.
:43:28. > :43:32.There's a record. Over 98 metresal, which I don't think we will --
:43:32. > :43:38.metres tall, which I don't think we will see any time soon.
:43:38. > :43:42.First place. It was not quite the World
:43:42. > :43:49.Championships in Daegu that she would have wanted on her return to
:43:49. > :43:59.the top of the sport. This is 4.62, her first attempt at
:43:59. > :44:30.
:44:31. > :44:35.this competition. Championship. A few days ago he
:44:35. > :44:41.celebrated his 19th birthday. He is running in the same line as he did
:44:41. > :44:46.in Daegu, when he became a 400 metre champion. There's Greg Nixon.
:44:46. > :44:56.Finished sixth in his heat. Ran well in the relay.
:44:56. > :45:05.
:45:05. > :45:15.at the moment. What a shock Lashawn Merritt got, this young man came
:45:15. > :45:35.
:45:35. > :45:45.Merritt and Kirani James in the same lanes they were last week in
:45:45. > :45:53.
:45:53. > :45:59.quickly, but this time so has Kirani James and Gonzales. Kirani
:45:59. > :46:03.James now beginning to close down the Jamaican outside him. Lashawn
:46:03. > :46:08.Merritt has not made his move yet. Perhaps Lashawn Merritt knows what
:46:08. > :46:13.a finish Kirani James has got, so he may be is saving something for
:46:13. > :46:18.the home straight. Kirani James and Lashawn Merritt, gold and silver
:46:18. > :46:23.medallist from Daegu. Ahead as they come into the home straight. Can
:46:23. > :46:33.Lashawn Merritt turn the tables? No, he can't! Look at Kirani James come
:46:33. > :46:36.
:46:36. > :46:42.away. This is quick. 44.36. That is one-hundredth of a second outside
:46:42. > :46:52.the time Lashawn Merritt set in Daegu. What a prospect this guy is.
:46:52. > :46:58.A lifetime best at just 19 years old. What an athlete this youngster
:46:58. > :47:01.is, Steve. Like you, Paul, I was watching that and thinking Merritt
:47:01. > :47:10.is measuring this right. What we didn't realise is that Kirani James
:47:10. > :47:15.was holding back as well. I think Merritt was thinking, "I've got you
:47:15. > :47:18.now." Then this young kid kicks in and he's not three tenths off his
:47:18. > :47:24.personal best. He is an unbelievable talent. He is a big
:47:24. > :47:27.guy. I was chatting to him yesterday, he was very relaxed, he
:47:28. > :47:34.is carrying this whole World Champion thing very lightly on his
:47:34. > :47:42.shoulders. He is a huge talent. Watching him run, I am trying to
:47:42. > :47:48.think who I would compare him to. He doesn't have the blistering pace
:47:48. > :47:55.of some people we have seen in the past. Watch this man over the next
:47:55. > :48:01.three or four years mature. He will be phenomenal. He is going to be a
:48:01. > :48:06.massive star, just as Butch Reynolds was when he broke the
:48:07. > :48:13.world record here back in 1988. Kirani James is a man for the
:48:13. > :48:23.future. A new national record of 44.36, the second fastest time in
:48:23. > :48:33.
:48:33. > :48:38.and the silver medallist from Korea. This should be a cracker.
:48:38. > :48:44.I was really disappointed. I went there to hopefully win a medal. Not
:48:44. > :48:51.qualifying for the final was a massive blow. I underperformed. I
:48:51. > :48:54.think I have got to just really get on with this race now. When you say
:48:55. > :48:59.you underperformed, what do you mean? I can't put my finger on it,
:48:59. > :49:03.if I'm honest. My training six weeks prior to the Championships
:49:04. > :49:08.was fantastic. I don't think I did anything wrong in the semifinal. I
:49:08. > :49:13.made two decisions. I made two good moves. I walked off the track
:49:13. > :49:18.thinking, "I couldn't have done any more." I had nothing to analyse. I
:49:18. > :49:23.think I covered all the moves. Just the last 50 metres, you know, maybe
:49:23. > :49:29.I tensed up a little bit. I knew I wouldn't qualify as a fastest loser.
:49:29. > :49:33.I didn't deserve to make the final on the day. Steve, it's the same in
:49:33. > :49:37.all sports, but you have to get it right on the day. There is always
:49:37. > :49:45.the risk that you might be flat and it might just be the wrong day?
:49:45. > :49:51.I don't think she ran badly. In the World Championships, the three
:49:51. > :49:59.semifinal method is really tough. If we wind back to 2009, Jennie got
:49:59. > :50:04.through her semifinal and the three ended up being the three medallists,
:50:04. > :50:08.all coming from the same semifinal. Jennie didn't run as well as she
:50:08. > :50:18.might have done. Had she got to the final, I think she would have had a
:50:18. > :50:19.
:50:19. > :50:23.good chance of winning a medal there. It is unfortunate the way
:50:23. > :50:33.that the semifinals work now. It is incredibly hard to get yourself in
:50:33. > :50:40.the final. I don't think she was that much off. Tonight, she will
:50:40. > :50:45.want to prove that, a fast race, all the big names are here. We are
:50:46. > :50:55.looking forward to this. So the full line-up - the pacemaker will
:50:56. > :51:19.
:51:19. > :51:26.might have won that race. Kenia Sinclair leads the Diamond race.
:51:26. > :51:31.A real talent wherever you look in this field. Hachlaf had a
:51:31. > :51:35.disappointing World Championships. Kenia Sinclair has been in great
:51:35. > :51:44.form on the Diamond League circuit all year. Didn't find that form in
:51:45. > :51:49.Daegu. Took it out hard. I was saying to Jenny, where do you think
:51:49. > :51:52.you would have been? She said, "I can't say. All I know is I would
:51:52. > :51:57.have raced hard in that final and I would have been fighting for a
:51:57. > :52:03.medal in the home straight." Lobanova has been asked to go
:52:03. > :52:12.through in 56 seconds flat. In Zurich, you expect to come here and
:52:12. > :52:22.run fast. Jenny was in good form in Daegu, with some good training
:52:22. > :52:22.
:52:22. > :52:28.sessions. There is Akkaoui. Two good runners there. Kostetskaya, I
:52:28. > :52:36.thought she was unlucky. She was going to nick the bronze medal, I
:52:36. > :52:46.thought. Montano was fighting hard. Had very tired legs. She went out
:52:46. > :52:52.
:52:53. > :53:00.hard on the first lap. Jepkosgei. It was this woman, Mariya Savinova,
:53:00. > :53:06.who Jenny Meadows knows so well. In the last 30 or 40 metres, she was
:53:06. > :53:16.the strongest. That is saying something because Semenya kicked
:53:16. > :53:19.
:53:19. > :53:25.hard with 200 to go. It was silver medal this time round. Rusanova.
:53:25. > :53:31.She got to the final. Was a rather tired eighth. I mentioned Morgan
:53:31. > :53:35.Uceny. So unlucky. That 1,500m final - Hannah England took the
:53:35. > :53:41.silver medal. I think Uceny would have been very much involved had
:53:41. > :53:47.she not fallen if that race. Kenia Sinclair, the Jamaican. Just losing
:53:47. > :53:57.form as she headed into the World Championships. She shares a line
:53:57. > :53:57.
:53:57. > :54:00.with Hachlaf. The women's 800m. 11 athletes. So Jenny Meadows hoping
:54:00. > :54:10.to make up for that disappointment with a good performance here. How
:54:10. > :54:14.fast will they go? The pacemaker has been given a really - well
:54:14. > :54:18.maybe rather too quick. Has been asked to go through to 600m - that
:54:18. > :54:25.would be some achievement if she did. They are already being
:54:25. > :54:28.stretched out. Jenny Meadows is in third place there. It is very quick
:54:28. > :54:33.through the first 200m. certainly is. 56 seconds would take
:54:33. > :54:38.them through in the same sort of pace as the World Championship
:54:38. > :54:42.Final. But all the main protagonists, including the
:54:42. > :54:47.champion of course, and Caster Semenya not interested in this
:54:47. > :54:52.early pace - there's been a faller! Halima Hachlaf went down. Got a
:54:52. > :54:59.nudge from Caster Semenya. She was trying to go for a gap that wasn't
:54:59. > :55:05.there. 56.83. A big gap here. Montano likes the fast pace and
:55:05. > :55:13.Jenny Meadows has gone with it. Jenny Meadows can run a good 200
:55:13. > :55:17.here. The others are miles behind and have not got going. They have
:55:17. > :55:22.two very good athletes out there. Have they gone too quick? Or will
:55:22. > :55:28.they come home with a quick time? Jenny looks really good. Montano
:55:28. > :55:34.looking to tire. If Jenny Meadows knew what was happening, Savinova
:55:34. > :55:38.gives chase. Kostetskaya in fourth. Montano leading. Savinova is
:55:38. > :55:43.closing quickly. Jenny Meadows, has she anything left? The American in
:55:43. > :55:47.the front. Meadows still looks good. Look at Savinova. The World
:55:48. > :55:50.Champion trying to catch the American. Jenny Meadows will finish
:55:50. > :55:58.strongly. Savinova coming away. The World Champion is going to win here
:55:58. > :56:05.in Zurich. It will be pretty quick. 58.28, Montano, then Meadows, and
:56:06. > :56:12.the others nowhere. 61.45 for the second lap. Not for Savinova, she
:56:12. > :56:17.probably ran an even pace there. Clever running from the Russian.
:56:17. > :56:23.Jenny Meadows, a fast first lap. Not able to finish through the last
:56:23. > :56:28.200. She ended up with 1:59 I presume, off a fast first lap. She
:56:28. > :56:38.will be happy with third but not with the time, Paul? We can have a
:56:38. > :56:38.
:56:38. > :56:46.look at Hachlaf in the red. And Kostetskaya was behind her. Maybe
:56:46. > :56:52.the American Uceny. Look at the distance Savinova made up there
:56:52. > :56:58.from 600m to 700m. She took metres out of absolutely everybody. The
:56:58. > :57:02.only athlete really that went with them, Semenya was nowhere, but she
:57:02. > :57:05.finished quickly, the South African. Savinova, the World Champion.
:57:05. > :57:09.Coming past Montano there and Jenny Meadows, I think she will be
:57:09. > :57:17.pleased with third place. I hope she will be pleased with third
:57:17. > :57:21.place. That was a very gutsy run indeed. There was about 15 metres
:57:21. > :57:26.between Montano and Jenny Meadows who is a couple of metres back on
:57:26. > :57:35.the American. When they went through with 200m to go, the
:57:35. > :57:42.finishing pace of Mariya Savinova was absolutely phenomenal. Jenny
:57:42. > :57:47.Meadows once again under two minutes - 1:58.92 - a very
:57:47. > :57:53.respectable time for Jenny. Superb by the World Champion. Jenny
:57:53. > :57:58.Meadows in third place - good run. Paul saying he hopes you are happy
:57:58. > :58:04.with third. Are you? I would have took third before that race. It was
:58:04. > :58:09.seven girls out of the top eight last week. Top three is fantastic.
:58:09. > :58:18.I am hearing that you may have won the Diamond race? I think I have.
:58:18. > :58:23.You have! I thought I had a chance of winning it. Everyone goes -
:58:23. > :58:29.Caster Semenya is behind me, fantastic. That will pay a few
:58:29. > :58:33.bills? Definitely! Last week I was devastated. Not to get in the final,
:58:33. > :58:36.but that shows the consistency I have shown this year. I am growing
:58:36. > :58:42.each year. I'm starting to believe in myself now as well. Last week
:58:42. > :58:46.was a blip. I got to believe that. Fantastic! Well done. It was an
:58:46. > :58:51.extraordinary race, with two of you clear of the field by miles. With
:58:51. > :58:55.200m to go, did you think it was a two-horse race? I tried not to
:58:55. > :58:59.think about it! Last week there was a screen and I really think I was
:58:59. > :59:04.looking at the screen and that cost me a place in the final. I really
:59:04. > :59:08.tried not to think about those behind me. If only I had done that
:59:08. > :59:13.last week! Next year. Thank you very much. Well done. Jenny Meadows
:59:13. > :59:23.who has won the Diamond race in the women's 800m. Steve can confirm the
:59:23. > :59:36.
:59:36. > :59:46.tonight and that is enough to put her ahead by one point in the
:59:46. > :59:52.Diamond race in the women's 800m so well done. The next event on the
:59:52. > :59:59.track is the men's 100m. I have seen a little question go up on the
:59:59. > :00:07.scoreboard here which is asking the crowd if they thought that Asafa
:00:07. > :00:17.Powell could run under 10 seconds - 79% said "yes", but he has been
:00:17. > :00:29.
:00:29. > :00:35.medals. Yohan Blake, the world champion.
:00:35. > :00:41.There's Walter Dix. A late lane change. This means that Dix is in
:00:41. > :00:47.four and Blake in three. The world champion, Yohan Blake
:00:47. > :00:50.said, "You know, I feel cool about the whole thing." Asked if he was
:00:50. > :00:53.feeling the pressure - aparently not!
:00:53. > :00:59.Asafa Powell, he is still struggling with injury.
:00:59. > :01:03.He is shaking his head. He doesn't look too up to this to me tonight.
:01:03. > :01:10.He has won the Diamond League. He needs to compete here though, it
:01:10. > :01:18.will tally turn up and run to take -- literally turn up and run to
:01:18. > :01:28.take the prize money. Habit this man - Paul Collingwood? What a
:01:28. > :02:00.
:02:00. > :02:08.out on a medal in the 200, finishing fourth. So no Bolt.
:02:08. > :02:12.Expecting to see him in Brussels. M B there. She is a big athlete ticks
:02:12. > :02:20.fan. Apparently singing -- athletics. Apparently singing later
:02:20. > :02:28.I know the organisers here are disappointed that Bolt is not
:02:28. > :02:34.running in this race. Powell is here.
:02:34. > :02:44.So the new world champion, the silver medallist, and the man who
:02:44. > :02:55.
:02:55. > :03:01.Away Powell got a good start. Dix goat got left in his blocks. It
:03:01. > :03:06.will be close. Blake moving away. Blake wins it from Powell.
:03:06. > :03:11.9.82. What a performance from the world
:03:11. > :03:15.champion. If there's any doubt about this young man's ability as
:03:15. > :03:22.well, false starts or no false starts at the World Championship,
:03:22. > :03:26.he would have given Bolt something to think about! He's put pay to
:03:26. > :03:31.Asafa Powell. Not 100% fit Asafa Powell - it has to be said. That a
:03:31. > :03:37.new personal best for the world champion. He'll only get quicker.
:03:37. > :03:44.No cobwebs for him. No tiredness in the legs. He is waving a -- riding
:03:44. > :03:50.a wave of euphoria and has produced a superb run. 79% of the crowd were
:03:50. > :03:56.right. Asafa Powell not at his best, we know that. Will he ever get back
:03:56. > :04:02.on terms with this man? Yohan Blake, just 21 years of age.
:04:02. > :04:05.Colin? An incredible start by Yohan Blake. We know what he's capable of
:04:06. > :04:09.doing. He is the world champion, indeed. He is super strong in that
:04:09. > :04:13.final part of the race. That is the important part of the race. That is
:04:13. > :04:17.when the medals are won. I was watching him all season. I was
:04:17. > :04:21.wondering when he was going to get the opportunity to run fast. Every
:04:21. > :04:25.single race he's been in this year, he's been into a head-wind and
:04:25. > :04:33.never had the opportunity to show what he's capable of doing. Tonight,
:04:33. > :04:39.on a very still night in Zurich he managed to stop the clock at 9.82.
:04:39. > :04:43.A new personal best. I know he'll be pleased with that. He'll be
:04:43. > :04:47.hungry to go quicker again. Asafa Powell, to the left, you can see,
:04:47. > :04:55.looks very comfortable himself there. Just happy to get through
:04:55. > :04:59.and again never -- a performance from Powell. All he can do is look
:04:59. > :05:03.at Blake. You can see he is glancing at the
:05:03. > :05:08.clock. Hungry for that new personal best. He knows he's in great shape.
:05:08. > :05:13.What I'm hoping, that he now believes he's world champion. He is
:05:13. > :05:18.good enough to hold that crown. Obviously with his training partner,
:05:18. > :05:28.Bolt being the main man, it is about time he can enjoy the fact
:05:28. > :05:29.
:05:29. > :05:35.that he's world champion. Look at really impressive performance from
:05:35. > :05:42.Yohan Blake. Powell looked relaxed in second place. Dix, taking third
:05:42. > :05:47.ahead of Frater. Maybe Powell was relaxed because he knew the money
:05:47. > :05:50.was in the bag. Blake, not on the Diamond League circuit as much as
:05:50. > :05:56.him. Powell did all his work early in
:05:56. > :06:06.the season and has won the Diamond race for the 100 metres.
:06:06. > :06:18.
:06:18. > :06:28.The second round of this women's of purpose in her eyes, is there?
:06:28. > :06:38.
:06:38. > :06:48.performance. Just a little bit short of that 70
:06:48. > :06:51.
:06:51. > :06:56.metre line. The magical distance in javelin throwing. A record for the
:06:56. > :07:01.German. Yohan Blake is coming down the media line here. We'll
:07:01. > :07:08.hopefully talk to him in a second after that 9.82 time. Seeing him
:07:08. > :07:12.run like that weths the appetite for Bolt against Blake, assuming
:07:12. > :07:17.nobody is disqualified. If we look at that extraordinary moment in
:07:17. > :07:21.Daegu a couple of Sundays away. You cannot believe such a
:07:21. > :07:25.disqualification of such magnitude could happen. It has provoked a
:07:26. > :07:30.huge argument, all the papers having their say about is the one
:07:30. > :07:34.false start rule ridiculous, or should it be enforced? It tends to
:07:34. > :07:39.divide. If you are involved in athletics you think it is a good
:07:39. > :07:44.idea. If you are not involved in it, from a marketing point of view, you
:07:44. > :07:47.think it is absurd that they might have missed the chance next year?
:07:47. > :07:57.think the general audience feel they will be robbed of the
:07:57. > :08:01.opportunity of seeing somebody like him perform. Athletics is about
:08:01. > :08:05.rules and regulations. I can't see there's any problem with it.
:08:05. > :08:09.Somebody like Bolt says himself, hands up, I'll be honest indeed
:08:09. > :08:14.that, you know, I didn't settle in my block. If he is kind of happy
:08:14. > :08:18.with it, then I cannot see any other reason why not. Let's face it,
:08:18. > :08:22.those rules were set for TV. They were not for the benefit of the
:08:22. > :08:29.athlete. What can you do? I don't necessarily think that the athletes,
:08:29. > :08:32.and just because one man causes a situation that drops the jaw of the
:08:32. > :08:36.entire nation, the entire world. Rules are there, they are there in
:08:36. > :08:46.place. They are chasing the clock here. The men's 1500 metres
:08:46. > :09:04.
:09:04. > :09:07.Nick Simmons, of the 800 metres will be the man to take them on
:09:07. > :09:17.further, which is perhaps a little surprising. That really is the
:09:17. > :09:38.
:09:38. > :09:48.measure of how quick they want to He might have well has a go at the
:09:48. > :09:54.
:09:54. > :10:00.world chasm pi yob is back in -- champion is back in fourth place at
:10:00. > :10:08.the mopltd. It will moment. It will be interesting to see the split
:10:08. > :10:17.here. Simmons in third place. 1.52, they are not hanging about,
:10:17. > :10:25.Steve. I am looking down there. I cannot
:10:25. > :10:32.see Kaki at all. I am sure he's not there, after I have given him the
:10:32. > :10:38.big build up. The pace will be fast. Simmons has been asked to be the
:10:38. > :10:48.pace-maker. I know you have been asked to do a job, but you have to
:10:48. > :10:48.
:10:48. > :11:30.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 42 seconds
:11:30. > :11:40.watch what's happening. He has as it did in the World
:11:40. > :11:57.
:11:58. > :12:04.Championships. Remarkable finish really, because
:12:04. > :12:07.Kiprop did not make the move that everybody expected him to. Chepseba
:12:07. > :12:17.a big surprise victory there. It will be interesting to see where
:12:17. > :12:24.the Diamond League points end up. There he is at the finish. Dropped
:12:24. > :12:30.back into fourth or fifth place. Kiplagat came through. Everybody
:12:30. > :12:37.was behind Chepseba. Kenya, in first, second and third, but not
:12:38. > :12:43.the victory everybody expected by the world champion.
:12:43. > :12:51.The first Diamond League and watching Chepseba win.
:12:51. > :12:57.By the time he got to the championships he did not represent
:12:57. > :13:07.Kenya there. Look at the smile on Kiprop's face.
:13:07. > :13:08.
:13:08. > :13:12.I don't understand why the last 200, once CHepseab had gone he packed up.
:13:12. > :13:22.He must have been watching that race in the World Championships
:13:22. > :13:24.
:13:24. > :13:28.been disappointing for Goldie Sayers.
:13:28. > :13:38.Not over 60 metres thus far. Can you tell by the look on her face.
:13:38. > :13:46.
:13:46. > :13:56.It is better, it is over 60 metres. Mariya Abakumova the champion.
:13:56. > :13:58.
:13:58. > :14:08.The gold has improved there. Could push her up to fifth place. Here's
:14:08. > :14:12.
:14:12. > :14:19.Sunette Viljoen. In round five. better.
:14:19. > :14:27.Viljoen, the Commonwealth and African record this year.
:14:27. > :14:31.68 metres and 38ths. She would have to throe a personal best to
:14:31. > :14:39.challenge Obergfoll. She may have extended her buffer.
:14:39. > :14:49.Abakumova in second place there. She has, 67.46.
:14:49. > :14:53.
:14:53. > :14:58.There was the victory for ChepseabA -- Chepseaba.
:14:58. > :15:06.Kiprop finishing in seventh place. As far as the Diamond points are
:15:06. > :15:12.concerned, well a big 12 points for Chepseba. A big surprise for Kiprop,
:15:12. > :15:16.who started as favourite, down in second place. We saw a wonderful
:15:16. > :15:26.100 metres new live time best from Yohan Blake. He is downstairs now
:15:26. > :15:40.
:15:40. > :15:46.all? Anything is possible for me. This is the first time I have seen
:15:46. > :15:53.the Zurich crowd respond to you like that. What is your thought to
:15:53. > :15:59.being here in Zurich? Usain Bolt, you get a massive cheer. I have to
:15:59. > :16:03.work hard. Usain Bolt give me tips on what it is like to be out here.
:16:03. > :16:07.I love the crowd. Do you think you have silenced the critics about who
:16:07. > :16:11.is the best, what you can do? You have proven you are a man who can
:16:12. > :16:14.run quick in your own right? Definitely. A lot of people think I
:16:15. > :16:19.can't run under pressure, but I have shown you tonight. I can do
:16:19. > :16:26.anything. It is in my mind. Usain Bolt was watching, what do
:16:26. > :16:34.you think he was thinking? I was in training, "You are going to run,
:16:34. > :16:44.but don't run ten-flat." That's what I did. Many congratulations.
:16:44. > :16:53.Thank you. It's the leader in the women's
:16:53. > :16:58.javelin, Christina Obergfoll. She hit that very, very hard. Oh! It's
:16:58. > :17:04.just short of that magical 70-metre line. There's a woman who has come
:17:04. > :17:10.back from South Korea with something to prove. I don't think
:17:10. > :17:20.there is a woman in the world who has got a faster arm than Christina
:17:20. > :17:28.
:17:28. > :17:33.Obergfoll. APPLAUSE There we are, 69.57m. Sally Pearson is here
:17:33. > :17:38.tonight in her new capacity as queen of the hurdling world. That
:17:38. > :17:44.race is coming up shortly. We have the women's 200m coming up. And an
:17:44. > :17:48.interesting relay at the end of the night.
:17:48. > :17:58.So, Colin, a quick word about Sally Pearson who I know you are chairman
:17:58. > :17:59.
:17:59. > :18:04.of her fan club! She is a great technician. That is what saw her to
:18:04. > :18:14.become World Champion. She is a great hurdler. Let's see what she
:18:14. > :18:21.
:18:21. > :18:31.can do. Here are the runners and riders: Yes, indeed, Phylicia
:18:31. > :18:34.
:18:34. > :18:41.George is on the inside. Nine athletes, but all of them I am sure
:18:41. > :18:44.- I'm not sure they must have all looked at Sally Pearson's
:18:44. > :18:54.performance and perhaps it was the performance of the World
:18:54. > :19:05.
:19:05. > :19:09.Championships in Daegu. Poetry in beaten up. She said she wants to
:19:09. > :19:18.enjoy it. She is the World Champion and she has been unbeaten this year.
:19:18. > :19:22.I am sure she doesn't want to let that unbeaten record go. Carruthers
:19:22. > :19:32.and Harper, who crossed the line almost together for the silver and
:19:32. > :19:32.
:19:32. > :19:38.the bronze, Kellie Wells missed out over in lane two.
:19:38. > :19:41.A super start from Sally Pearson. A metre up already. Kellie Wells is
:19:41. > :19:48.going well. Sally Pearson is showing them what it is about.
:19:48. > :19:56.Watch this girl go! Pearson will win by a mile. 12.53. A good run
:19:56. > :20:03.from George and Wells. But she is head and shoulders above everybody
:20:03. > :20:10.else. Tired or not, she's still way too good for the rest. The Aussies
:20:10. > :20:13.must be so proud of Sally Pearson. That's Lisa Urech, a local hero.
:20:13. > :20:18.She was saying yesterday she can't wait to get home. She's got some
:20:18. > :20:23.business to take care of. This of course not a Diamond race here.
:20:23. > :20:28.That comes next week in Brussels. They wanted to have her here in
:20:28. > :20:34.Zurich and she has delivered. Colin? If you are a young hurdler
:20:34. > :20:37.watching somebody that you need to look up to to really hone your
:20:37. > :20:43.technique, this young lady is the person to watch. If you are a male
:20:43. > :20:47.hurdler, exactly the same thing. She is just poetry in motion when
:20:47. > :20:52.it comes to hurdling. A great lead leg, aggressive, hitting the floor
:20:52. > :20:56.positively and pulling through the trail leg. That is the most
:20:56. > :21:03.important thing - pull your leg right the way through. Get it in
:21:03. > :21:10.front of you. An explosive start from Sally. She is an amazing
:21:10. > :21:14.sprinter. Her season's best is 11.2. She uses all of that speed in the
:21:14. > :21:20.best way possible - keeping it well controlled but aggressive. Off each
:21:20. > :21:25.and every hurdle, she makes sure she is meticulous, making sure that
:21:25. > :21:31.she pulls her trail leg through strong, quick. Keeps it very
:21:31. > :21:35.dynamic. Slightly clips that one. No worries, she can afford to make
:21:35. > :21:40.these tiny mistakes. Every time I watch Sally Pearson run, I just
:21:41. > :21:45.want to watch her run. She is just sensational. Someone like myself
:21:45. > :21:52.who loves the technique of this event, I could seriously watch her
:21:52. > :21:57.all day. A dip into that hurdle is accurate. Perfect. I love watching
:21:57. > :22:01.her. She makes me so excited indeed. I am looking forward to next year
:22:01. > :22:05.when she gets another winter under her belt, gets a bit stronger and
:22:05. > :22:13.can last a bit longer those final two hurdles. Perhaps, she will be
:22:13. > :22:23.the world record holder. How good would that be! She said, "If I win
:22:23. > :22:54.
:22:54. > :23:01.and run under 12., I'll be happy." She gets it! Isinbayeva clear on
:23:01. > :23:08.the first attempt. So third and final attempt now at 4.72m. What
:23:08. > :23:14.can she do? Her form has been so patchy. You can see there, she
:23:14. > :23:24.doesn't look too worried. She wants to defend her Olympic title in
:23:24. > :23:26.
:23:26. > :23:36.London. Here is the World Champion, also her third and final attempt.
:23:36. > :23:40.
:23:40. > :23:45.She thought she had it. She got it on the way down. Jenny Suhr clear.
:23:45. > :23:50.Still to come: The fastest living woman over 100m, Carmelita Jeter
:23:50. > :23:55.taking on a star-studded field in the 200m.
:23:55. > :23:59.Sally Pearson's last few weeks have been so fantastic. I was thinking
:23:59. > :24:03.about less than 12 months ago all the drama in Delhi about her losing
:24:03. > :24:09.the title there and sport is about treating triumph and disaster the
:24:09. > :24:13.same. Yet, she's come back so much She has. You talk about the sign of
:24:13. > :24:17.a champion. That is what you have to do when you are met with
:24:17. > :24:22.adversity, or things that really don't go your way. I just think her
:24:22. > :24:25.season has been incredible. I remember saying to Colin, can she
:24:25. > :24:31.sustain that kind of performance? She ran quickly in the semifinal in
:24:31. > :24:36.Daegu. Yet, still managed to raise her game and run that incredible
:24:36. > :24:40.12.28. Sensational! The flow over the hurdles was uninterrupted. That
:24:40. > :24:43.is key? Absolutely. She is very quick out of the blocks. She gets
:24:43. > :24:48.into her running very fast. That is the most important thing. You have
:24:48. > :24:54.to have a sense of urgency. Sally manages to do that. She does that
:24:54. > :24:58.so well. I could seriously watch tape after tape after tape of Sally
:24:58. > :25:03.Pearson hurdling. She is so technically efficient. Every single
:25:03. > :25:09.woman in this line-up will go home, will look at these tapes of Sally
:25:09. > :25:16.Pearson and say, "I would love to hurdle like that." Talking about
:25:16. > :25:19.the relationship with her coach as well, she knows her strengths and
:25:19. > :25:24.weaknesses and they are the key things that some athletes have to
:25:24. > :25:28.do - be patient and be patient that the performance will come. She has
:25:28. > :25:32.always been a talented athlete. She has become a world beater and a
:25:32. > :25:38.super athlete. I think it is incredible what she's done and I
:25:38. > :25:42.personally had not seen a performance like that in such a
:25:42. > :25:46.long time. She's walked past us. Hopefully, we will have a chat with
:25:46. > :25:50.her. She is not very tall. So she hasn't got the advantage of
:25:50. > :26:00.massively long legs, so it is all in the technique. That is the
:26:00. > :26:03.
:26:03. > :26:10.delight of the event for you? what the event is all about. There
:26:10. > :26:14.is a sense of artistry and Sally puts that in place, brings it to
:26:14. > :26:18.the every day person. They can see instantly that she is a great
:26:18. > :26:23.hurdler. That is the key. Hopefully, we will hear from her in a second.
:26:23. > :26:33.Let's check what is happening with the women's long jump. Jonathan?
:26:33. > :26:33.
:26:33. > :26:43.There's the World Champion, Brittney Reese. A great performance
:26:43. > :26:45.
:26:45. > :26:53.in Daegu by Brittney Reese. 6.51m in the first round. The lead held
:26:54. > :27:03.by Nastassia Mironchik-Ivanova of 6.67m. That is perfect. Brittney
:27:03. > :27:13.Reese - 7.19m this year - outstanding. A little bit ragged in
:27:13. > :27:20.terms of her technique. Just very natural. Especially strong and
:27:20. > :27:30.6.72m, she moves into the lead. next event on the track is the
:27:30. > :27:48.
:27:48. > :27:52.line-up is the World Champion. Carmelita Jeter so close to doing
:27:52. > :28:00.the double in Daegu, finished second in the world championship
:28:00. > :28:07.200m final. Certainly, Bianca Knight, who leads the Diamond
:28:07. > :28:13.League, has got a lot to prove here. She only ran in the sprint relay in
:28:13. > :28:17.Daegu where of course the Americans won that event. Debbie Ferguson-
:28:17. > :28:21.McKenzie, sixth in the World Championship Final at the age of 35.
:28:22. > :28:25.A phenomenal athlete. Allyson Felix must start as one of the favourites.
:28:25. > :28:29.It will be interesting to see how the American gets on here. She's
:28:29. > :28:36.got fresh legs. She ran so many races in Daegu. Still came away
:28:36. > :28:43.with two golds from the relays, both relays. A bronze medal in this
:28:43. > :28:53.event. Certainly interesting to see if Allyson Felix can make any head
:28:53. > :28:54.
:28:54. > :28:59.way at all on Carmelita Jeter two lanes outside her.
:28:59. > :29:03.Away we go. Solomon gets away quickly, but so does Carmelita
:29:03. > :29:07.Jeter and Allyson Felix beginning to run them all day. Allyson Felix
:29:07. > :29:17.comes into the home straight looking super smooth as always. But
:29:17. > :29:18.
:29:18. > :29:24.Carmelita Jeter has the edge. In lane two, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce
:29:24. > :29:29.is going well. But Carmelita Jeter is going to win it, 22.27. She came
:29:29. > :29:39.on very strong over the last 50 metres. A slight head wind there
:29:39. > :29:46.
:29:46. > :29:49.but nothing to trouble the athletes. Carmelita Jeter. Allyson Felix
:29:49. > :29:56.could do nothing about that. Carmelita Jeter ran well here,
:29:56. > :30:03.Colin? Yes, she's been running well all year over 200m. Her coach is
:30:03. > :30:07.very happy with her 100m running so he decided to focus on the 200m.
:30:07. > :30:12.It's reaped the benefits. She is getting more confident and
:30:12. > :30:16.confident at this event. Still a little ragged at the back end. This
:30:16. > :30:20.is the strongest part of her race. She is a 100m specialist where she
:30:20. > :30:25.goes a bit ragged and you can see compared to Allyson Felix, she does
:30:25. > :30:29.struggle at the end. 22.27 is one of the best performances we have
:30:29. > :30:39.seen for Carmelita Jeter this year. So it is great to see that she is
:30:39. > :30:42.
:30:42. > :30:50.running this 200m event and running champion, the silver medalist of
:30:50. > :30:54.the 200 metres. She is a complete sprinter. Allyson Felix has not had
:30:54. > :30:58.a golden here in any shape or form. She might be disappointed and will
:30:58. > :31:08.have to go back to the drawing board to decide what she does for
:31:08. > :31:27.
:31:27. > :31:37.Carmelita Jeter, 22.27. One of the fastest times she has ever run.
:31:37. > :31:43.
:31:43. > :31:47.Allyson Felix picked up second performance from Sally Pearson, not
:31:47. > :31:51.only in the World Championships, but here again this evening.
:31:51. > :31:55.Afterwards she spoke to John. an extraordinary year you've had?
:31:55. > :32:01.You have nailed it there. It has been extraordinary. A lot of hard
:32:01. > :32:08.work has gone into this. My training has focused ond staying
:32:08. > :32:13.consistent, -- focused on staying consistent. I have been focused on
:32:13. > :32:18.this race, coming from Korea two days ago. I felt tired tonight.
:32:18. > :32:22.did not look tired to us? It was tiring. I was happy to back up. I
:32:22. > :32:26.was nervous for that race. I was nervous coming in as the world
:32:26. > :32:31.champion, proving myself after that massive race I had. I did it and
:32:31. > :32:34.I'm really proud. We were talking on a couple of occasions about
:32:34. > :32:39.different countries and their strengths and weaknesses. It has
:32:39. > :32:43.not been a vintage time for Australian track and field. How is
:32:43. > :32:50.it for you to be the standard- bearer? We have struggled in
:32:50. > :32:55.athletics in Australia for a while now. I am glad to help it out and
:32:55. > :33:01.for the Australian public who don't see it very often. It is nice to
:33:01. > :33:06.know I can do it for our country. Is that it for the year? I am doing
:33:06. > :33:15.100 metres on Saturday. Many congratulations. That was a
:33:15. > :33:24.fantastic performance! Thanks a lot. The action keeps on coming. There
:33:24. > :33:34.is a man who wished he was in Daegu. This is the man who danced his way
:33:34. > :33:56.
:33:56. > :34:06.have their trials there. The man in his place is in this race and
:34:06. > :34:13.
:34:13. > :34:18.there. They have been asked to go through in a swift pace.
:34:18. > :34:22.Well, earlier on today, I was going to say a very swift pace. It has
:34:23. > :34:32.been pegged back a little. They were going to go through 2,000
:34:33. > :34:32.
:34:33. > :34:42.metres in 15.18. They have been asked for five 22. Let's see what
:34:43. > :34:49.
:34:49. > :34:59.happens in these first laps. They have two pacemakers.
:34:59. > :35:00.
:35:00. > :35:09.Langat one of the pacemakers. The pacemakers, really getting
:35:10. > :35:19.along here and Ramolefi is going with them.
:35:20. > :35:38.
:35:38. > :35:48.tonight. Six to go.
:35:48. > :35:59.
:35:59. > :36:09.Six athletes left in this high jump. This is the third and final test
:36:09. > :36:30.
:36:30. > :36:36.now in the polt vault. Jesse Williams. We have seen lots
:36:36. > :36:40.of hangovers here in Zurich. What will it be for Jesse Williams? The
:36:40. > :36:49.number one. A final attempt.
:36:49. > :36:55.Not quite! The world champion goes out. The
:36:55. > :37:05.first 1,000 metres, spot on, 2.40. It was amended to that today.
:37:05. > :37:06.
:37:06. > :37:15.That is the way they like to run the steeple races. Not so fast for
:37:15. > :37:22.the first four or five laps, then speeding up.
:37:22. > :37:32.The pacemaker in the green, Ramolefi leading the race.
:37:32. > :37:34.
:37:34. > :37:43.We have Kemboi. Kipyego, in the orange. Those five,
:37:43. > :37:49.if you don't include the pacemaker are clear.
:37:49. > :37:55.I wonder if Paul Kipsiele Koech will want to carry on. He is a
:37:55. > :37:59.great pace-maker. He would not expect Kemboi,
:37:59. > :38:04.goodness me, he would like the victory here tonight. There is some
:38:04. > :38:11.class in those top six competitors there.
:38:11. > :38:15.The pacemaker is doing a good job. Koech is a hard man indeed.
:38:15. > :38:20.Kemboi, easing along behind him. Koech, a hard runner, when he needs
:38:20. > :38:25.to B It is difficult to envisage why on
:38:25. > :38:28.earth the Kenyans left him at home. He's certainly not past it. He is a
:38:28. > :38:35.class competitor every time he steps on the track.
:38:35. > :38:43.So, the former Olympic champion in second place and the current world
:38:43. > :38:51.champion moving back into third. This is boiling up into a, I've got
:38:51. > :38:58.a feel it will be Koech verses Kemboi.
:38:58. > :39:04.Ndiku is an interesting character. It is so typical just to get in the
:39:04. > :39:14.top three in the Kenyan team. If you do get into the Kenyan team you
:39:14. > :39:18.
:39:18. > :39:28.are not guaranteed a medal. The Kenyans - these are the two, to
:39:28. > :40:05.
:40:05. > :40:12.It is Koech, Kemboi and Kipyego. Kipsiele Koech keeps looking up at.
:40:12. > :40:17.He can see the danger man. Ezekiel Kemboi is just behind him.
:40:17. > :40:22.700 metres to run. Koech, lead from the front.
:40:22. > :40:29.Kemboi, comfortable. Having to work hard, though. Kiplagat trying to
:40:29. > :40:39.hang on to the two Kenyans ahead of him. The Ugandan running well here.
:40:39. > :40:43.Koech, almost shuffling kind of style. He never gives up. He is
:40:43. > :40:48.consistently good. Often gets kicked by his team-mates.
:40:48. > :40:51.Into the water jump there. Comes out better than Kemboi. They have
:40:51. > :40:55.500 metres to go. Still between the three.
:40:55. > :41:01.Kiplagat in third place. He did not clear that water jump well. He lost
:41:01. > :41:08.a couple of metres. Now the 400 metre mark and the bell, can the
:41:08. > :41:13.hard man in front beat the world champion? He has a point to prove
:41:13. > :41:23.has Koech. Paul Kipsiele Koech, has he got Kemboi and Kiplagat? Those
:41:23. > :41:25.
:41:25. > :41:30.three are well ahead of everybody else.
:41:30. > :41:36.When it gets to the last 200, that familiar style, the grim mace
:41:36. > :41:40.starts to come across his face. Koech takes it better. Kemboi, just
:41:40. > :41:43.stretches in the last stride over that one. Now to the water jump for
:41:43. > :41:50.the last time. They need to negotiate this and then the stripbt
:41:50. > :41:54.will start. Both over safely. A -- sprint will
:41:54. > :42:01.start. Both over safely. The world
:42:01. > :42:08.champion being tested by Koech. Now the last hurdle. Kemboi is clear.
:42:08. > :42:15.Kemboi comes away again. The world champion wins in Zurich and wins
:42:15. > :42:20.ahead of his team-mate, the consolation for Koech is he will
:42:20. > :42:25.retain the Diamond race by one point from Kemboi. Smiles all
:42:25. > :42:31.around. I do feel so sorry. It is a good win for Kemboi. I feel so
:42:31. > :42:37.sorry for Koech. I think the Kenyans should have taken him. The
:42:37. > :42:41.controversy has continued to rage on in Kenya. He had to watch them
:42:41. > :42:45.run well there. Koech showing he would be close. He would not have
:42:45. > :42:50.beaten Kemboi, but he would have been close. That was a phenomenal
:42:51. > :42:55.last lap. Koech, just having a look across.
:42:55. > :42:59.He punched the air when he punched the line, the man on the right-
:42:59. > :43:04.hand-side of the screen. He must have known the Diamond League money
:43:04. > :43:08.was safely in the bank. Kemboi, his stages, as the number
:43:08. > :43:18.one in the world, when it comes to racing.
:43:18. > :43:34.
:43:35. > :43:40.That is a brilliant jump from the Greek athlete. Hardly seen him on
:43:40. > :43:44.the international circuit. Finished fifth in the World
:43:44. > :43:50.Championships. Him and Trevor Barry have beaten some big names here
:43:50. > :43:54.tonight in Zurich. Certainly a lovely technique.
:43:54. > :44:04.Remember that name - I think he's saying. We have not heard it before.
:44:04. > :44:04.
:44:04. > :44:10.We might hear a lot more about it with technique like that. This is
:44:10. > :44:20.two metres and 34. So he fails this.
:44:20. > :44:26.That man! I reckon before this competition began, as well as here
:44:26. > :44:36.in Zurich, for Barry though, he has had a super season, culminating in
:44:36. > :44:46.
:44:46. > :44:56.had another wonderful evening -- Zurich have had another wonderful
:44:56. > :45:20.
:45:20. > :45:27.Jenny Suhr4.72 came first. It was none the less perhaps the most
:45:27. > :45:36.exciting field event of this evening. Christina Obergfoll making
:45:36. > :45:43.up for her disappointment in fourth place in Daegu. 69.57m - a meet
:45:43. > :45:49.record. One more race to come. The 4 by 100
:45:49. > :45:59.relay. The case of British sprinting is in the dock because we
:45:59. > :46:13.
:46:13. > :46:21.have the British runners running in much faster race, it was won in
:46:22. > :46:28.10.05. Three British athletes in. Harry, the best of the British
:46:28. > :46:32.bunch, 10.31. None of those times would trouble the scorers at the
:46:32. > :46:37.elite end. What do you think about the general state of British
:46:37. > :46:47.sprinting? Well, we are void of that elite runner at this moment.
:46:47. > :46:51.The question is why? Why haven't we got the talented person to go under
:46:51. > :46:55.10 seconds on a regular basis. We saw Yohan Blake capable of doing
:46:55. > :47:00.that. It is a big question for our sprint coaches, really, to wonder
:47:00. > :47:08.what is going wrong. Of course, when we talk about relay racing,
:47:08. > :47:18.you think about last Sunday and that 4x100m relay. There was this
:47:18. > :47:24.fiasco at the final change-over. Perhaps, as well, Marlon throwing
:47:24. > :47:28.the baton at him, that was possibly a medal that went abegging. I would
:47:28. > :47:38.say so. The British had their chances having run a season's best
:47:38. > :47:45.
:47:45. > :47:49.in the heats. I don't know who is to blame. Some say Harry Ai --
:47:49. > :47:54.Harry Aitkens went off too early. Then the collision. Harry was in
:47:54. > :47:58.his lane. It was an unfortunate accident. Still, we need to find
:47:59. > :48:02.four consistent runners that can reproduce times year on year out.
:48:02. > :48:06.At the moment, our guys are just having one great season and then
:48:06. > :48:10.they are breaking down and not able to repeat the performances.
:48:10. > :48:15.Consistency is the key in so many sports. They have a chance now to
:48:15. > :48:25.get the baton from A to B. Can they do it?
:48:25. > :48:25.
:48:25. > :48:30.We certainly hope so. There is Craig Pickering. Hands on to Marlon
:48:30. > :48:39.Devonish. Runs that bottom bend beautifully. It is not Harry AA
:48:39. > :48:49.bringing the baton home, it is Mark Lewis-Francis. Mark ran 10.36
:48:49. > :49:01.
:49:01. > :49:07.earlier on tonight. There's the are concerned, they had a point to
:49:07. > :49:17.prove, but they haven't brought any of the big guns here. No Walter Dix.
:49:17. > :49:26.
:49:26. > :49:36.The Jamaicans being led off by wears gloves when he is racing. He
:49:36. > :49:57.
:49:57. > :50:03.Carter, Ainsley Waugh and Michael Frater. No Powell, no Blake. The
:50:03. > :50:07.two big guys have decided to pass this one. A little bit of room -
:50:07. > :50:17.the Americans have left out Walter Dix. We expected to see Dix running
:50:17. > :50:24.
:50:24. > :50:34.outside of the USA in lane six. Their team didn't finish in Daegu.
:50:34. > :50:53.
:50:53. > :51:00.All these teams running in their national colours apart from the
:51:00. > :51:10.Swiss and the Germans. This is the final track event.
:51:10. > :51:14.
:51:14. > :51:19.Should be a good one. Great Britain in lane three.
:51:19. > :51:26.James Ellington away well. So are the Jamaicans outside them. The
:51:26. > :51:30.American high hurdler and the Jamaicans get the baton away. Craig
:51:30. > :51:38.Pickering going for Great Britain. Jamaica is in the lead at the
:51:38. > :51:41.minute through Nesta Carter. Nesta Carter hands over beautifully.
:51:41. > :51:46.Marlon Devonish having a good leg for Great Britain. Mark Lewis-
:51:46. > :51:54.Francis gets the baton in the lead. Lewis-Francis for Great Britain. He
:51:54. > :52:02.is up against Michael Frater. Jamaica get it! Great Britain in
:52:02. > :52:07.second place. Wow! 38.31 the winning time from a real scratch
:52:07. > :52:11.side as far as Jamaica are concerned. That makes some amends
:52:11. > :52:16.for Great Britain's failure in the World Championships. Different
:52:16. > :52:25.composition in the team. Mark Lewis-Francis, 15 metres from the
:52:25. > :52:33.line must have thought he had a real chance. Well, to be honest,
:52:33. > :52:39.Mark in front of that point would have expected to stay in front. He
:52:39. > :52:48.is down there with John. Mark, when you got the baton, I thought you
:52:48. > :52:52.had won it? I got run down by a Jamaican! I can't complain. Yeah.
:52:52. > :52:56.Not much breath left. That was a great leg you ran as well. If only
:52:56. > :53:03.a week or four days earlier, you could have done the same thing?
:53:03. > :53:07.know. That is when we need to do it. So soon after the champs, so little
:53:07. > :53:13.sleep and jet lag, I'm quite happy with that. They had to run to catch
:53:13. > :53:16.us. We were ahead. The team spirit was there. We felt it. It is good
:53:16. > :53:21.to redeem ourselves after what happened in Daegu. When Mark got
:53:22. > :53:28.the baton, did you think you can win this? I thought we had it. It
:53:28. > :53:33.was unlucky. He had been running 9.98 all season. We done well.
:53:33. > :53:36.Craig, the atmosphere standing here at the side of the track was
:53:36. > :53:40.fantastic. Did you feel it out there? Phenomenal. Hopefully, it
:53:40. > :53:46.will be like that at the Olympics next year. Many congratulations. We
:53:46. > :53:50.are chasing the clock as well. quick thanks to Tim who has helped
:53:50. > :53:55.me through the season, my mum and everyone back at home. Everyone who
:53:55. > :54:03.knows you! Thank you very much. Here ends a really frantic evening
:54:03. > :54:09.of entertainment with Jamaica winning in 38.31. A national record
:54:09. > :54:14.for Switzerland which went down well here.
:54:14. > :54:19.So an extraordinary evening. Talk about cramming a quart into a pint
:54:19. > :54:26.pot. The headlines: You talk about Kirani James. He is
:54:26. > :54:30.going to be a star way beyond track and field. A fantastic performance
:54:30. > :54:40.tonight beating Lashawn Merritt. There's so much more to come from
:54:40. > :54:46.him. Yohan Blake - 9.82 - a personal best in the 100m. Bolt has
:54:46. > :54:54.to be worried. Well done Jenny Meadows. She wins the Diamond race
:54:54. > :54:59.which is $40,000. And Sally Pearson just incomparable
:54:59. > :55:04.when it comes to the hurdles. Just flowing effortless over those
:55:04. > :55:09.hurdles to another victory. You could use the world "effortless" to
:55:09. > :55:14.describe Carmelita Jeter who won the 200m, the quickest woman in the
:55:14. > :55:18.world over 100m and she was flowing beautifully towards the finishing
:55:18. > :55:22.line, dipping for victory. Rounding off a great evening for a series of
:55:22. > :55:27."great" athletes. When you get a night of athletics like this, it
:55:27. > :55:31.takes a lot to beat it? A lot of people were wondering how the
:55:31. > :55:35.athletes were going to perform. Every single one of them virtually
:55:35. > :55:40.raised their game and did a good job for Zurich. They have invested
:55:40. > :55:46.a lot of time and effort in getting these athletes from Daegu so they
:55:46. > :55:49.can perform for this massive crowd. I suppose one of the great things
:55:49. > :55:54.is, you respond to the environment you are performing in and the noise
:55:54. > :56:02.that has been created here. It is a football ground, two clubs play
:56:02. > :56:06.here and it is an athletics stadium so it can be done. The athletes
:56:06. > :56:09.raised their game? The crowd understands the tradition and the
:56:09. > :56:15.fantastic performances that this stadium can bring. They have turned
:56:15. > :56:21.out in their droves. The atmosphere is incredible. There's been almost
:56:21. > :56:25.like celebrity style screaming going on. It is exciting, brilliant
:56:25. > :56:29.and it has been a thoroughly enjoyable night. You must remember
:56:29. > :56:34.that in 2014, this is where the European Championships will take
:56:34. > :56:38.place. So all of the atmosphere that we are feeling now, can you
:56:38. > :56:42.imagine this then. Our athletes will love performing here. MelC is
:56:43. > :56:47.about to perform in the middle for us. From a British perspective,
:56:47. > :56:51.when you look at Andy Turner, he was a bit tired, Jenny Meadows
:56:51. > :56:55.still had a lot going for her. It is hard to keep the momentum going
:56:55. > :57:02.because you have built yourself for the World Championships and you
:57:02. > :57:07.have eaten the main course but you still have another one to eat!
:57:07. > :57:12.Jenny Meadows performed well. The guys have hopefully put to bed that
:57:13. > :57:16.poor performance in the 4x100m. It is a good performance. We have to
:57:16. > :57:22.be careful not to overexaggerate what happened in Daegu. There is
:57:22. > :57:32.still time for them to do really well. Next week, Usain Bolt is in
:57:32. > :57:33.
:57:33. > :57:39.action over the 200m. If Bolt peak form raced Blake in peak form, that
:57:39. > :57:45.would be interesting? It would still be one-way traffic. You must
:57:45. > :57:49.remember Usain is the main man in their training group. Thank you,
:57:49. > :57:57.guys. We will see you next week in Brussels. We are on BBC Two at
:57:57. > :58:01.7.00pm. That is the Bolt show whatever race he runs. That is
:58:01. > :58:07.followed by the Mo show, which is on Saturday, Great Britain against
:58:07. > :58:11.the USA from the Quayside in Gateshead at 1.00pm. We think Mo
:58:11. > :58:18.Farah is going to run. Then Mo on Sunday, Mo starts the show because
:58:18. > :58:23.he is going to be sending tens of thousands of you on your way in the
:58:23. > :58:31.Great North Run. The last mile will feel like you are running to
:58:31. > :58:34.Berwick-upon-Tweed! We have had a great night here. One
