:00:10. > :00:18.Good afternoon. And welcome to Tyneside for our coverage of the

:00:18. > :00:22.now world famous Bupa Great North Run weekend. Today's action centres

:00:22. > :00:32.on the stunning Newcastle Gateshead Quayside, and the third edition of

:00:32. > :00:48.

:00:48. > :00:54.the Great North City Games, St COMMENTATOR: Andy Turner takes the

:00:54. > :01:04.victory! That is absolutely fantastic... Once again, the

:01:04. > :01:06.

:01:06. > :01:16.spectators getting a great view. And a bit of English pride at stake

:01:16. > :01:19.

:01:19. > :01:22.here. The more support you give us, For the last couple of years, this

:01:22. > :01:26.match has featured England versus Australia, England winning on both

:01:26. > :01:29.occasions. But this year, we step it up a notch, as you can probably

:01:29. > :01:33.tell from this trophy, England becomes Great Britain and Northern

:01:33. > :01:39.Ireland, and the opponents are the strongest athletics nation in the

:01:39. > :01:45.world, the USA. The GB captain is Mo Farah, back in the fray after

:01:45. > :01:49.his heroics in the World Championships. Today, it is the 2

:01:49. > :01:55.Mile race for our golden boy. Hannah England got a brilliant

:01:55. > :01:59.silver medal in Daegu. She faces Jenny Meadows this afternoon. It

:01:59. > :02:05.wasn't the way he might have hoped to win it, but Andy Turner's bronze

:02:06. > :02:10.medal was a massive achievement. He will be taking on jays and budget

:02:11. > :02:19.and this afternoon. And we have the fastest woman in the world at the

:02:19. > :02:23.moment, Carmelita Jeter. She goes over the 150m. Bernard Lagat was

:02:23. > :02:29.the man who chased Mo Farah home in the 5,000 odd in Daegu. But not

:02:29. > :02:33.today, as he is in the 1 Mile race. And in the long jump, Dwight

:02:33. > :02:40.Phillips will be sailing through the air, as ever, with the greatest

:02:40. > :02:42.of these. This afternoon's of these. This afternoon's

:02:42. > :02:49.timetable looks like this... The points-scoring system is very

:02:49. > :02:55.simple, one point for a win, and that is it. Bernard Lagat will kick

:02:55. > :03:05.us off in just a few moments' time. That will be in the 1 Mile. That is

:03:05. > :03:07.

:03:07. > :03:10.over on the other side of the We have got Walter Dix, after his

:03:10. > :03:17.stunning 200m in Brussels last night. We will be reviewing that

:03:17. > :03:20.during the course of the programme. We have got other theme of ten

:03:21. > :03:23.going on this afternoon. It is the 10th anniversary of the Gateshead

:03:23. > :03:29.Millennium Bridge today. We have got 10 medallists from Daegu, and

:03:29. > :03:34.we have got 10 events. Our two guests know all about ten as well.

:03:35. > :03:40.It is Colin Jackson and Dean Macey. In fairness, you were 10 times

:03:40. > :03:44.better than most, so there you go. There have been working with you

:03:44. > :03:47.all these years, you have never said anything as nice as that.

:03:47. > :03:52.said anything as nice as that. along! We have just hot-footed it

:03:52. > :03:56.back from Brussels, perhaps one of the best nights of athletics ever.

:03:56. > :04:01.It was an incredible night of athletics. When you think about it,

:04:01. > :04:06.who would have thought a world- leading mark by Usain Bolt in the

:04:06. > :04:10.100m gets overshadowed by his own training partner in the 200m. A

:04:10. > :04:13.fantastic performance by Yohan Blake, running the second fastest

:04:13. > :04:18.time ever in that event. It was like no other 200m we have ever

:04:18. > :04:22.seen before. Usain Bolt's face was a bit of a picture after that.

:04:23. > :04:26.think he was genuinely shocked. He had given his training partner a

:04:26. > :04:29.bit of advice, but he did not expect him to go out and do that.

:04:30. > :04:34.It was a sensational performance. I'm looking forward to seeing it

:04:34. > :04:39.again. This is your first experience of street athletics -

:04:39. > :04:43.what do you make of the concept? is fantastic, it works for TV, 90

:04:43. > :04:46.minutes of intense action. And it certainly works for the punters.

:04:46. > :04:49.The weather is not perfect, but the amount of people who have turned

:04:49. > :04:54.out is phenomenal. I think the competition will be phenomenal as

:04:54. > :04:59.well. We have got some outstanding athletes, 10 medalists from Daegu,

:04:59. > :05:04.four champions. Yes, from Dwight Phillips, who retained his long

:05:04. > :05:08.jump title, which nobody expected, because he had not been in great

:05:08. > :05:11.form before Daegu. We have got Walter Dix, what he has got left in

:05:11. > :05:16.his legs after yesterday, we do not know. And we have got Mo Farah, who

:05:16. > :05:21.has been also more year. I hope he gets a fantastic reception today.

:05:21. > :05:25.Mentioning Mo, we have to look back once again to Brussels, and

:05:25. > :05:30.Kenenisa Bekele coming back to form. Absolutely, he opened the show. It

:05:30. > :05:34.was an incredibly fast paced race. Going under 27 minutes, to hit his

:05:34. > :05:39.target, was pretty impressive. He is going to go into the winter very

:05:39. > :05:44.confident. And Mo will be a bit nervous about Kenenisa Bekele, with

:05:44. > :05:48.the Olympics coming up next year. Moving on to the action now, we

:05:48. > :05:52.have got the men's 1 Mile, featuring Bernard Lagat. It is over

:05:52. > :06:02.to the commentary team now, with Brendan Foster, and first of all,

:06:02. > :06:08.

:06:08. > :06:13.STEVE CRAM: We are going to start with the men's 1 Mile, on the

:06:14. > :06:18.Newcastle side, if you like. We're on the Gateshead side. It will be a

:06:18. > :06:22.kind of a horseshoe, all the way down the North bank, coming across

:06:22. > :06:28.the spring bridge, and then coming back on the Gateshead side, to

:06:28. > :06:32.finish right in front of us. Three from each team to contest this 1

:06:32. > :06:36.Mile race. We have already mentioned Bernard Lagat, at the

:06:36. > :06:45.beginning of the programme. He will be the big star. The man who came

:06:45. > :06:51.so close to beating Mo Farah in the 5,000m. He will be joined by a Kyle

:06:51. > :07:01.Miller and Donald Cowart for the USA. For Great Britain, Bruce

:07:01. > :07:18.

:07:18. > :07:22.Raeside and Andrew Osagie, as well Luke Gunn, normally a steeplechaser.

:07:22. > :07:27.And do not write off Bruce Raeside, but one would assume that Bernard

:07:27. > :07:33.Lagat would be looking forward to this race, Brendan.

:07:33. > :07:38.Forster label yes, there he is, the established athlete. It is a

:07:38. > :07:42.privilege for these other athletes to be running in the company of one

:07:42. > :07:47.of the all-time greats. It should be interesting for Andrew Osagie

:07:47. > :07:53.today. Whenever the milers end up running against the half milers, as

:07:53. > :08:03.they used to be called, they always try to take them out early, run

:08:03. > :08:06.

:08:06. > :08:13.them beyond their southern distance. But this is a nice, steady start.

:08:13. > :08:19.They're going a long the north side of the river, running towards the

:08:19. > :08:24.Tyne Bridge, that familiar landmark. They will cross over the swing

:08:24. > :08:33.bridge, and come down the other side, past The Sage, and then along

:08:33. > :08:37.here, where they will get a great reception in front of us. It is

:08:37. > :08:42.overcast on Tyneside this morning, autumnal weather, I think we could

:08:42. > :08:47.say. There is not much wind. If anything, it is probably a bit in

:08:47. > :08:56.their faces at the moment. But it is pretty still, to be honest. This

:08:56. > :09:02.race is being run at a steady pace so far. I'm sure it will pick up,

:09:02. > :09:06.though. Bernard Lagat happy to lead things at the moment. Do you think

:09:06. > :09:16.that might be because Bernard Lagat has had a look at the times of his

:09:16. > :09:17.

:09:17. > :09:22.opponents? He doesn't want Andrew Osagie for company along the

:09:22. > :09:28.finishing straight, don't you think? Yes, pretty sure. But it

:09:28. > :09:32.will be interesting to see how Andrew Osagie goes. I love to see

:09:32. > :09:36.800m runners having a go at the 1,500. Andrew has really been

:09:36. > :09:39.developing as an athlete. He had a lot of injuries in his early career.

:09:39. > :09:44.He has been developing his strength since then. His coach has been

:09:44. > :09:54.doing a good job with him. It was a very encouraging performance in the

:09:54. > :09:58.

:09:58. > :10:03.World Championships. And he will be The only thing about running on the

:10:03. > :10:06.road, over the 1 Mile, it is so different to the track. The

:10:06. > :10:11.perception of where you are in the last quarter-mile can sometimes

:10:12. > :10:16.encourage people to kick a bit early. A slight incline here, as

:10:16. > :10:22.they go down into the road right along the quayside. Lagat putting

:10:22. > :10:27.the pressure on now. Andrew Osagie the only British athlete trying to

:10:27. > :10:36.stay with the Americans. As they head down the quayside, on the

:10:36. > :10:40.Gateshead side of the river. Three- quarters of a mile to go. Andrew

:10:40. > :10:44.Osagie running well, can he get amongst those Americans? Bernard

:10:45. > :10:48.Lagat looks to be untroubled. Silver medallist in the World

:10:48. > :10:56.Championships in that fantastic, historic race for British athletics,

:10:56. > :11:03.with Mo Farah winning the 500 -- 5,000m. This was his rival then,

:11:04. > :11:08.but it is Bernard Lagat who looks good right now. Kyle Miller just

:11:08. > :11:12.giving him something to think about, on his shoulder. But now, Lagat

:11:12. > :11:21.changes up through the gears. The former world champion at 1,500m,

:11:21. > :11:26.don't forget. He comes storming through on the track part. Andrew

:11:26. > :11:36.Osagie finishing strongly as well. Lagat wins it, Kyle Miller takes a

:11:36. > :11:46.second, and Andrew Osagie gets third. Pretty swift, that winning

:11:46. > :11:47.

:11:47. > :11:51.time, 4:06. At the moment, the way he ran that race, he was so

:11:51. > :11:58.comfortable. Just stretching it, as he needed to. Looking the part,

:11:58. > :12:03.coming onto the track. And suddenly, he clicked into gear, and there

:12:03. > :12:07.goes the great Bernard Lagat. Still winning medals, after winning them

:12:07. > :12:14.back in Sydney in the year 2000. Great man, great friend of Mo

:12:14. > :12:24.Farah's, and a great athlete to brood. I would say that was an easy

:12:24. > :12:24.

:12:25. > :12:28.win for him today. When they were in Daegu, Mo Farah's family and

:12:28. > :12:34.Bernard Lagat's family spent a lot of time together. They are very

:12:34. > :12:39.good friends, as you say. We will see Mo Farah shortly, but Bernard

:12:39. > :12:43.Lagat joins Phil now. Thank you very much. You made it

:12:43. > :12:47.look easy. I felt really comfortable in the race. I wanted

:12:47. > :12:52.to come here and run so well, and say thank you to the people who

:12:52. > :12:56.invited me. Brendan Foster... I want to thank everybody for coming

:12:56. > :13:01.to support us. I wanted to make a good show today. I knew what was

:13:01. > :13:07.going to be fun. I kept telling myself, I want to have fun. I have

:13:07. > :13:10.come here all the time, to run in Gateshead. I'm pleased. We know you

:13:10. > :13:15.love running in Britain, but what about bringing athletics to a new

:13:15. > :13:19.audience? This is a brilliant idea. I have only been hearing about it,

:13:19. > :13:24.but when I saw yesterday the way it was set up, and the way a lot of

:13:24. > :13:28.people were coming, something which is important to me is the kids. The

:13:28. > :13:33.kids this morning were running, having so much fun. That is the

:13:33. > :13:37.best thing that I have ever seen. It is good for our sport. A I

:13:37. > :13:47.really thank UK Athletics for putting this together. It is

:13:47. > :13:54.

:13:54. > :13:57.unbelievable. These kids are It is good to see him here, he has

:13:57. > :14:00.obviously enjoyed the experience. He has been around the world a lot,

:14:00. > :14:07.He has been around the world a lot, Bernard Lagat. Hopefully he will go

:14:07. > :14:11.away and tell everybody about what he has seen here on Tyneside today.

:14:11. > :14:21.Good run from Kyle Miller in second, and a pretty good performance from

:14:21. > :14:28.

:14:28. > :14:34.Holly Bleasdale sales over in this beautiful amphitheatre in the

:14:34. > :14:44.shadow of the Baltic Centre. Three metres, 96. The opening height of

:14:44. > :14:54.the competition. You expect this to be quite easy. What a great

:14:54. > :15:03.

:15:03. > :15:12.holder is on her way. More difficult for Lucy Bryan for Great

:15:12. > :15:20.Britain. She is only 16 years old. She has lost out there. Youth

:15:20. > :15:27.bronze-medallist. A baptism of fire for her. Representing the senior

:15:27. > :15:37.team for the first time. She is a name to watch out for her. Lucy

:15:37. > :15:50.

:15:50. > :15:56.Interesting to hear from Bernard Lagat. When everyone comes here and

:15:56. > :16:02.is used to running on the track, they get impressed with the close

:16:02. > :16:08.proximity to the audience. It is a unique occasion and they enjoy it.

:16:08. > :16:14.When Bernard said it, it came from his heart. What happens is he tells

:16:14. > :16:23.more and more people and the audience love it. Bernard Lagat won

:16:23. > :16:30.today. He was second behind Mo Farah before. Mo Farah was in the

:16:30. > :16:40.Edinburgh Cross-Country in January. Mo Farah begins in winning style

:16:40. > :16:54.

:16:54. > :17:04.Mo Farah! It is going to be gold for Great Britain. Farrell wins it.

:17:04. > :17:28.

:17:28. > :17:38.In towards the home straight, he pushed the leader in the 10,000

:17:38. > :17:42.

:17:42. > :17:47.metres, will he do it again? Mo Gold for Mo Farah! This time he got

:17:47. > :17:57.it right. He found the strength to hold on. What a performance from Mo

:17:57. > :17:57.

:17:57. > :18:01.You never tire of watching that again and again. A remarkable 2011

:18:01. > :18:08.of for Mo Farah and he will be running in 10 minutes' time in the

:18:08. > :18:13.two miles. Another athlete for whom 2011 was incredible, Sally Pearson

:18:13. > :18:20.in hundred metre hurdles. Sensational all season. She did not

:18:20. > :18:27.end the way she wanted to. She was looking very solid, explosive of

:18:27. > :18:32.the blocks and she kept working hard. Literally, about halfway, she

:18:32. > :18:42.just catches the hurdle and that causes her to feel like she is tied

:18:42. > :18:46.

:18:46. > :18:52.back. Because of that, she lands up flat over the barrier. No chance

:18:52. > :18:58.whatsoever to recover. It was unfortunate for her. But lost other

:18:58. > :19:05.diamond lead itself. Danielle Carruthers, she has competed today,

:19:05. > :19:11.she ended up winning. Interestingly, Sally was distraught afterwards.

:19:11. > :19:16.Yes, it was sad to see. On reflection, she said to herself at

:19:16. > :19:26.the end of the day I have had a cracking win and I cannot complain.

:19:26. > :19:29.

:19:29. > :19:34.She let Danielle Carruthers go on and take it. There is a Carruthers,

:19:34. > :19:44.she was on the same flight as Colin. Dawn Harper as well, it should be a

:19:44. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:53.with Sarah McGreevy on the inside, Carruthers is getting ready. The

:19:53. > :19:58.British athletes have a very tough race in terms of the opposition.

:19:58. > :20:06.The Olympic champion, two medallists, silver and bronze from

:20:06. > :20:16.World Championships from the USA. Let's look at the start list: the

:20:16. > :20:30.

:20:30. > :20:35.championships this season, her best set some years ago. She seems

:20:35. > :20:45.relaxed and enjoying herself. She is next to a former Olympic

:20:45. > :20:51.

:20:51. > :20:59.champion and bronze-medallist from Harriers club coached by the best

:20:59. > :21:06.coached in the world, Malcolm Arnold. Danielle Carruthers, second

:21:06. > :21:14.fastest in the world this year. And the world championship silver-

:21:14. > :21:19.medallist, 12.47. Sally Pearson, the Australian has won 12.28. It

:21:19. > :21:22.shows you how good the Australian has been over the course of 2011.

:21:22. > :21:32.This will be very tough for Great Britain to get in amongst the

:21:32. > :21:32.

:21:32. > :22:16.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:22:16. > :22:22.second. 12.74. That is very quick indeed for these conditions. Dawn

:22:22. > :22:27.Harper really came through strongly at the end. A fine run by both

:22:28. > :22:32.Americans. The Britons, third and fourth place but that's what we

:22:32. > :22:38.expected. These two have been almost

:22:38. > :22:44.inseparable. Harper missed out to Carruthers for the silver medals at

:22:44. > :22:54.the championships. Carruthers screens and she goes over each

:22:54. > :23:16.

:23:16. > :23:21.A tremendous performance and race, entertaining the crowd. That is

:23:21. > :23:28.what she said yesterday. That was the goal. For the US to do a good

:23:28. > :23:38.job. They are so close, you get to touch their hand. And that is the

:23:38. > :23:47.difference, face on. I was smiling, but he won the game face! What a

:23:47. > :23:54.couple of days you have had. I am happy. I have had three hours sleep,

:23:54. > :23:59.I got here at 1030. I warmed up. I am happy. Have you reflected on

:23:59. > :24:04.watch achieved last night? really yet! I have not had time to.

:24:04. > :24:14.I would take a vacation when this is over. Great to see you here,

:24:14. > :24:34.

:24:34. > :24:40.thank you for coming from Brussels. Bleasdale, four metres, 16. She is

:24:40. > :24:47.a powerful athlete. Still young. Lots of potential. She goes sailing

:24:47. > :24:56.over. On paper, she is the best athlete but these are difficult

:24:56. > :25:03.conditions. You can see some rain lying on the run up. A great effort

:25:03. > :25:13.by the Blackbird Harrier. She was disappointed with the previous

:25:13. > :25:26.

:25:26. > :25:33.performance. Four metres, 12, first comfortable. At the higher heights

:25:33. > :25:43.she may meet on to a stiffer pole. Holly Bleasdale has the advantage

:25:43. > :25:51.

:25:52. > :26:01.between Holly and Becky. Great Britain have the advantage at the

:26:02. > :26:03.

:26:03. > :26:13.on the Gateshead side. On the Newcastle side, we are getting

:26:13. > :26:23.ready for the women's mile. Eight athletes in this, four from each

:26:23. > :26:23.

:26:23. > :27:04.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:27:04. > :27:11.British team is concerned. There Brussels last night. Jenny Meadows,

:27:11. > :27:16.of course, after the disappointment, she felt she underperformed in

:27:16. > :27:22.Daegu not making it to the final. She was in a tough semi-final, they

:27:22. > :27:28.all were. Jenny Meadows looking forward to being tested over longer

:27:28. > :27:32.distances here. Ms Hannah England is very tired, she said -- she

:27:32. > :27:38.should start as favourite. It is always interesting to see

:27:38. > :27:42.Jenny Meadows. It is always interesting to see how they cope

:27:42. > :27:49.moving up. Jenny says she is getting better over longer

:27:49. > :27:54.distances. We are yet to see that. Hannah England, a fantastic

:27:54. > :27:58.performance in the World Championships. She is settling them

:27:58. > :28:04.down, Helen Clitheroe behind them, a good 10,000 metres earlier in the

:28:04. > :28:11.year. She has run consistently over the summer. We expect Helen have to

:28:11. > :28:14.have a shop workout today and to turn out for the first half

:28:14. > :28:19.marathon tomorrow. Jenny Meadows looks comfortable and controlled.

:28:19. > :28:23.And a palette of Great Britain on the inside, 400 metres behind them

:28:23. > :28:31.and the United States getting in amongst them. They look like the

:28:31. > :28:35.team race, the British athletes. Hannah England has had a busy time

:28:35. > :28:42.since silver in a Daegu. She went back to Canada for a friend's

:28:42. > :28:47.wedding last week. She missed out on a couple of racing opportunities

:28:47. > :28:53.but perhaps saved her best for last night. A good back-up performance

:28:53. > :28:56.from Hannah England after silver. She said she is looking for the

:28:56. > :29:01.consistency closer to the four- minute mark which she felt capable

:29:01. > :29:07.of that has not produced. You expect Hannah England to run

:29:07. > :29:11.again well today. Helen Clitheroe is experienced athlete, she knows

:29:11. > :29:15.her way around this distance. She has been consistent over the summer

:29:15. > :29:21.and will make them run for their money. She is taking on Hannah

:29:21. > :29:26.England. The British athletes are leaving the four Americans. So far,

:29:26. > :29:29.two results and the Americans have won both. This could beat Britain's

:29:30. > :29:34.first win in this match. Helen Clitheroe has decided it is for

:29:34. > :29:40.real and is testing them. Helen Clitheroe, in the lead, Hannah

:29:40. > :29:50.England behind. Jenny Meadows who insists she would be a good runner

:29:50. > :29:55.

:29:55. > :30:03.in the Mile has a chance to prove going that fast, I'm surprised at

:30:03. > :30:07.that they have opened up a gap like this. Gunner will be the one who

:30:07. > :30:17.will have the best chance of winning, if she is in this position

:30:17. > :30:34.

:30:34. > :30:37.medallist, and you can sense that she now has that confidence. That

:30:37. > :30:42.is what winning a medal does for you. Helen Clitheroe running

:30:42. > :30:49.strongly, she's determined to keep Jenny Meadows behind her. Looking

:30:49. > :30:56.over her shoulder, but they're within the last 440 yards. Pallant

:30:56. > :31:00.has just drifted off the pack. It is between these two now. Helen

:31:00. > :31:10.Clitheroe looking behind, deciding to make her move. She's having a go

:31:10. > :31:13.now. Hannah England has not really started kicking yet. There's a

:31:13. > :31:23.right battle going on for third spot. Jenny Meadows going pretty

:31:23. > :31:23.

:31:23. > :31:26.well. So, victory assured for Great Britain. Hannah England stretching

:31:26. > :31:32.away, but Helen Clitheroe still pushing her. Just a couple of

:31:32. > :31:37.metres between them. Hannah England stretching out a bit, the world

:31:37. > :31:47.silver medallist, pulling away from her teammate. Helen Clitheroe will

:31:47. > :31:52.

:31:52. > :31:57.go again tomorrow in the Great North Run, as Brendan was saying.

:31:57. > :32:02.Hannah England likes this race. This is the third time she has come

:32:02. > :32:07.to Tyneside and won on the roads. It has been a superb year for her.

:32:07. > :32:14.What confidence that will give her for next year. She is great talent,

:32:14. > :32:23.has been for a while. She's finally beginning to realise that talent.

:32:23. > :32:27.Between these two, Helen Clitheroe stretches, but Hannah England

:32:27. > :32:32.response. She has to dig deep, because she ran hard last night.

:32:32. > :32:39.But the difference that medal makes shows here. She knows she can win

:32:39. > :32:42.this one. And she has got the talent as well. I would suggest

:32:42. > :32:52.that we are going to be excited about Hannah England running next

:32:52. > :32:52.

:32:52. > :33:00.year in the Olympic games in London over 1,500m. Jenny Meadows finishes

:33:00. > :33:04.in fourth. There's the talent and the application. Hannah England

:33:04. > :33:09.finishing off a great couple of weeks. She really is in great form

:33:09. > :33:16.now. She wins this race for the third time. A good performance by

:33:16. > :33:20.heaven Clitheroe, and she will be happy with that. A really good run,

:33:20. > :33:30.and a busy weekend for Hannah England. It will be busy for Helen

:33:30. > :33:30.

:33:30. > :33:38.Clitheroe as well. The winning time, 4:39. Not super-fast, but that

:33:38. > :33:44.doesn't matter. I think our winner, Hannah England, is now with

:33:44. > :33:45.Jonathan, and Jenny Meadows as well. Jonathan, and Jenny Meadows as well.

:33:45. > :33:49.That's right. Hannah England, Brendan said in commentary the

:33:49. > :33:55.difference that a medal makes, try to sum it up, what difference it

:33:55. > :33:59.has made to you. It is just really fun. Even warming up, people were

:34:00. > :34:05.still saying congratulations. It is just such a nice thing to have.

:34:05. > :34:09.Honestly, did you think you could win a medal going into Daegu?

:34:09. > :34:13.thought maybe if the race went absolutely perfectly. But it did

:34:13. > :34:18.not hold me back, I still ran with the most confident I could.

:34:18. > :34:21.have had a busy time since coming back from Daegu. Yes, I went to

:34:21. > :34:26.Canada to be bridesmaid for my friend, the now based in Brussels

:34:26. > :34:31.last night. But this is the third year in a row that I have won this

:34:31. > :34:35.race. Sometimes in your career, you suddenly think, maybe I can achieve

:34:35. > :34:39.more than I have never achieved before. How do you assess your

:34:39. > :34:44.situation going into the winter? know I'm doing the right thing. I

:34:44. > :34:47.have got confidence, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing.

:34:47. > :34:53.Hopefully I will get into that Olympic final in the best shape

:34:53. > :34:58.possible. Jenny Meadows, just to bring you in. Obviously, a very

:34:58. > :35:04.different experience in Daegu for you - what do you look back on,

:35:04. > :35:08.what do you make of it? The 800m this year was a very, very strong

:35:08. > :35:11.event. Obviously, I was hoping to get a medal in the championships,

:35:11. > :35:15.so not to make the final was a massive disappointment. It is easy

:35:15. > :35:19.to make rash decisions and think, it is back to the drawing board.

:35:19. > :35:23.But in reality I don't think I did much wrong. Just a couple of

:35:23. > :35:29.changes, just to make that 1% difference. I need a bit of a

:35:29. > :35:34.bigger buffer zone to make for a qualify for the semi-finals.

:35:34. > :35:38.Running 1:59, like I did, who are still a world-class time, but you

:35:38. > :35:42.need to be running 1:57 consistently, to give yourself that

:35:42. > :35:49.buffer. Today was the first part of the plan to helping me improve next

:35:49. > :35:55.year. My coach thinks I need a bit more strength. I'm sure this 1 Mile

:35:55. > :36:00.Robles gave me that today! Maybe I will do some indoors, to a couple

:36:00. > :36:05.of 1,500s, take the emphasis off running fast all the year round,

:36:05. > :36:09.making sure I peak for the Championship. Well done to both of

:36:09. > :36:15.you. We are going to go over to the other side of the River Tyne now.

:36:15. > :36:18.Over to Phil Jones. Thanks. I'm here with world

:36:18. > :36:23.champion, yet again, Dwight Phillips, getting ready for the

:36:23. > :36:27.long jump. I wonder what you think of the set up here? It is

:36:27. > :36:32.definitely a great set-up. It is a great atmosphere, to bring

:36:32. > :36:37.athletics to the street. The casual fans, we can gain more fans from it,

:36:37. > :36:43.so it is great. What about this raised have run up, and how that

:36:43. > :36:49.affects you. It is cool, it is not quite long enough for my approach,

:36:49. > :36:54.but I'm going to give it a go. what about the prospects of this

:36:54. > :36:58.being seen in the big cities in the United States? It would be great to

:36:58. > :37:01.bring this format to the United States. Athletics is one of the

:37:01. > :37:06.biggest sports there, running is one of the biggest sports, and this

:37:06. > :37:12.would gain a lot of momentum for our spot in the USA. It is great to

:37:12. > :37:16.see you being a part of it here. Well done again on the world title.

:37:16. > :37:20.Thanks a lot, I appreciate it. one world champion to another, next

:37:20. > :37:28.up, it is Mo Farah. He has been on Tyneside for a couple of days doing

:37:28. > :37:32.some promotional work. Phil Jones caught up with him.

:37:32. > :37:35.If somebody said to me, you will be world champion, I would definitely

:37:35. > :37:39.take that. To come away with gold and silver, it is absolutely

:37:39. > :37:44.amazing. It is what an athlete's athletics career is all about,

:37:44. > :37:48.getting as many medals as you can. It is very exciting moving towards

:37:48. > :37:53.2012. I have got to keep doing what I do, not getting carried away by

:37:53. > :37:58.anything. We always thought you had the talent but maybe not the belief.

:37:58. > :38:03.In the past we talked and you said, I hope I can do that. But that has

:38:03. > :38:07.all changed, you are the man. I am putting that behind me. As an

:38:07. > :38:13.athlete, you have got to be confident. I am a lot more

:38:13. > :38:19.confident. I have had a great year. I am happy how it has gone. But it

:38:19. > :38:24.is all about 2012, so just, keep training, keep injury-free. But

:38:24. > :38:28.confidence has made a big difference. As for being back home

:38:28. > :38:37.now, this is your official competitive homecoming this weekend

:38:37. > :38:41.- how are you looking forward to taking part here, in the 2 Mile?

:38:41. > :38:47.am really looking forward to it, I have always competed here, this is

:38:47. > :38:51.going to be my fifth but also this will be my last race, so it will be

:38:51. > :38:54.nice to get it out of the way, hopefully end on a high, and then

:38:54. > :39:01.enjoy my time off. You will get another fantastic reception from

:39:01. > :39:05.the crowd, no doubt. They have been fantastic all year. Yes, there's a

:39:05. > :39:11.lot of guys out there and some supporting. Here, anybody can come

:39:11. > :39:18.along and support. They do not need tickets, it is great. It will be a

:39:18. > :39:23.nice battle for us with the USA. STEVE CRAM: What a year it has been

:39:23. > :39:27.so far for Mo Farah. Can he rounded off in style here on Tyneside? He's

:39:27. > :39:36.the man they have really come to see, I think. This 2 Mile event

:39:36. > :39:44.starts on our side of the river, just up from us, just down by The

:39:44. > :39:49.Sage. In this sort of company, for Mo Farah, the two miles should not

:39:49. > :39:52.be any problem whatsoever. But he has been a bit tired these last

:39:52. > :39:56.couple of weeks, because of the fact that he is the world champion,

:39:57. > :40:03.which brings with it a whole host of interview requests, people

:40:03. > :40:09.wanting to spend time with him, TV shows, radio shows, etc. He's

:40:09. > :40:12.polishing his sunglasses now. BRENDAN FOSTER: He is polishing his

:40:12. > :40:21.sunglasses. You always have to do that when you come to Tyneside,

:40:21. > :40:31.Steve! Well, we have not quite seen the sun yet, not quite, anyway.

:40:31. > :40:35.

:40:35. > :40:40.None of those names, with all due respect, would-be athletes to

:40:41. > :40:47.frighten Mo Farah. But I'm sure they will be enjoying the

:40:47. > :40:52.opportunity to run against Mo. Maybe afterwards we will be able to

:40:53. > :40:56.get his thoughts on Kenenisa Bekele last night, mind you! Brendan and

:40:56. > :41:01.myself and have no the whole of Great Britain have been waiting a

:41:01. > :41:07.long time for what we saw this summer. Last summer was great, but

:41:07. > :41:11.this summer has been, well, almost unbelievable. The world best time

:41:11. > :41:15.in the 10,000m at the beginning of the summer. That set the tongues

:41:15. > :41:21.wagging, could he win the World Championships? He went brilliantly

:41:21. > :41:28.in Monaco over 5,000m. Then the question was, how will he go in the

:41:28. > :41:32.double? Brilliant race in the 10,000, just losing out, but then

:41:32. > :41:42.coming back in fantastic style to take the gold medal in the final of

:41:42. > :41:57.

:41:57. > :42:01.much you will have enjoyed, as much as anybody else, the performances

:42:01. > :42:04.are macro on the track this year, but particularly the fact that he

:42:04. > :42:12.turned it into a world title in the end. Everyone was saying it was

:42:12. > :42:18.going to be difficult. Yes, and I thought he had a great chance in

:42:19. > :42:22.the 10,000m. He beat many big names in that. But unfortunately, he

:42:22. > :42:27.found a young Ethiopian who was faster than him on the last lap

:42:27. > :42:34.that day. But the thing for me was the way he came back and recovered

:42:34. > :42:38.from that 10,000m. He has got a fantastic team around him. I marvel

:42:38. > :42:43.at what they did and how he came back. He was even better when he

:42:43. > :42:47.came back a couple of days later in the 5,000m, then he had been in the

:42:47. > :42:51.10,000m. It was a real pleasure to watch a British athlete winning a

:42:51. > :42:57.world title. Mo Farah has been promising a lot. He has had a long

:42:57. > :43:01.journey, starting from the time when his schoolmaster found him out

:43:01. > :43:11.at Feltham Community College, and then helped him along. And then

:43:11. > :43:15.

:43:15. > :43:19.Alan Storey, then UK Athletics took over. At the end of the day, he's

:43:19. > :43:23.so excited about next year. He was here yesterday, he could not

:43:23. > :43:27.believe how many people, including the athletes, came to was for his

:43:27. > :43:32.autograph. Jo Pavey came and asked for his autograph and he thought

:43:32. > :43:36.she was joking. She said, no, I'm not. He would not give her his

:43:36. > :43:40.autograph, by the way! STEVE CRAM: The other thing is how

:43:40. > :43:43.much of a journey he has been on, as a person. He was an exuberant

:43:43. > :43:48.character as a youngster. He will admit that he was not always as

:43:48. > :43:56.focused as he might be. In the last to or three years, he has been a

:43:56. > :44:01.very, very good athlete for six or seven years, he should have one the

:44:01. > :44:06.European Championships back in 2006, but he's a different person now.

:44:06. > :44:09.has got so much confidence now. I remember as a kid, we were

:44:09. > :44:15.commentating on the world cross- country in Ostend, and he was one

:44:15. > :44:19.of the favourites, and he finished 17th. He came and knocked on the

:44:19. > :44:24.door of the commentary box, when we were commentating on Paula

:44:24. > :44:30.Radcliffe. He said, I have just finished 17th, do you want to

:44:30. > :44:40.interview me? That is why a lot of the athletes love Mo, because he

:44:40. > :44:56.

:44:56. > :45:05.has been a character in the team Farah enjoying the chance to run in

:45:06. > :45:12.front of a British crowd. He is going to Somalia to visit relatives

:45:12. > :45:17.after this. A bit of a break before back into heavy training for next

:45:17. > :45:27.year. A couple of weeks off, he said he was overawed by the

:45:27. > :45:27.

:45:28. > :45:33.reaction. He said he went to Arsenal and in the changing an area,

:45:33. > :45:37.someone asked for his autograph. He is a modest young man, personable

:45:37. > :45:41.and such a talent over the years. We have been waiting for this to

:45:41. > :45:51.happen, it has happened better than we dreamed. It could not happen to

:45:51. > :46:02.

:46:02. > :46:07.a nicer guy. He is getting used to enjoying the crowd cheering him on.

:46:07. > :46:12.They are coming up to the mile.. Then, they would take off from

:46:12. > :46:20.there. Andy Vernon are struggling a little bit. He is another world

:46:20. > :46:25.champion, he won the World Student Games in the summer. He has had a

:46:25. > :46:35.good summer. A personal best over 5,000 metres. Getting tails of a

:46:35. > :46:41.little bit. This is the second time over the Millennium Bridge. They

:46:41. > :46:51.really are being stretched out now. Mo Farah, no problem for him. But,

:46:51. > :47:02.

:47:02. > :47:09.the others... JJ Jegede and Jeff Mo Farah, he is having a gay which

:47:09. > :47:12.is good to see. When you get an athlete at the top of his form, you

:47:12. > :47:16.know he has been moving around the celebrity circuit but he has been

:47:17. > :47:20.training as well. You know he will be on the down after World

:47:20. > :47:30.Championships. If you are a distance runner, you want to take a

:47:30. > :47:33.

:47:33. > :47:43.chance. Ryan is stretching Mo Farah. -- Brian Olinger. The crowd will be

:47:43. > :47:53.

:47:53. > :47:59.the past. We have seen in here on good days and bad days. Today, he

:47:59. > :48:07.is happy to enjoy it. Turning under the Tyne Bridge, they will swing

:48:07. > :48:11.round to come across the swing bridge. The athletes swinging

:48:11. > :48:16.across there and Mo Farah is now in the position he wants to beat. We

:48:16. > :48:20.know how fast he is at the finish. He is definitely going to make this

:48:20. > :48:26.a big occasion by producing a sprint finish. He is being

:48:26. > :48:32.stretched, he is probably hurting a bit. Distance running does hurt. He

:48:32. > :48:42.has not used his sunglasses yet! He is moving into overdrive. It has

:48:42. > :48:59.

:48:59. > :49:04.been a good effort from Brian screen and the cry went up when Mo

:49:05. > :49:13.Farah hit the front. He is not too far away, working hard. Glancing

:49:13. > :49:17.over his shoulder. A quarter of a mile to go. When he gets within our

:49:17. > :49:23.side, you will hear a big roar from the crowd. It will be a pleasure to

:49:23. > :49:29.welcome home the gold-medallist from the World Championships. Mo

:49:29. > :49:37.Farah, European it double winner. Silver in 10,000 metres. Gold in

:49:37. > :49:43.5,000 metres. It is a pleasure to reel off those titles. Now, he is

:49:43. > :49:49.in his glory days. You do not get many of these in your career, let's

:49:49. > :49:57.hope the purple patch last for a few more years. Mo Farah, easing

:49:57. > :50:04.his way to victory. He has won on three occasions. It will be a

:50:04. > :50:12.fairly comfortable fourth victory. Not exactly unexpected. Jeff See

:50:12. > :50:18.takes third spot at the moment. A little look behind. He blows kisses

:50:18. > :50:28.and waste to the crowd. What a wonderful reception. Great

:50:28. > :50:36.

:50:36. > :50:46.Britain's world champion coming place. J C taking third. -- Brian

:50:46. > :50:54.Olinger in second, Jeff See taking third. Mo Farah can put his feet up

:50:54. > :50:58.for a while. He has been enjoying some of the plaudits. A little bit

:50:58. > :51:04.more attention and celebration for him over the next few months. Then,

:51:04. > :51:11.back to hard work and looking forward to summer next year. We

:51:11. > :51:16.will be hoping he can reproduce this form. He will not be blowing

:51:16. > :51:23.kisses in London 2012 but fantastic if he did! We want to know he is

:51:23. > :51:33.back and ready and on great form. He has renewed confidence as world

:51:33. > :51:41.

:51:41. > :51:51.champion. A little wave from the medallists, the 5,000-metre

:51:51. > :51:54.

:51:54. > :51:59.champion wins the two mile race. Another victory today, but slightly

:51:59. > :52:07.different for you today. I wanted to come back home, I love Newcastle.

:52:07. > :52:14.A great crowd here. You need a break and deserve it! What does the

:52:14. > :52:19.next few weeks hold? A break and then slowly start the season slowly.

:52:19. > :52:27.A how good he does your mind turn to next year? Definitely, you have

:52:27. > :52:31.to forget about it and focus and 2012. It is a big year. I have to

:52:31. > :52:36.stay positive and do what I'm doing. How are you enjoying the attention,

:52:36. > :52:41.I noticed the swirl of attention? Yes, nice to see so many people

:52:41. > :52:51.giving the support. I really appreciate the support.

:52:51. > :52:54.

:52:54. > :53:04.appreciate you being here. Thank Well done to him. If they

:53:04. > :53:11.

:53:11. > :53:15.comfortable run. Brian Olinger had There were a few star turns last

:53:16. > :53:20.night in Brussels in the sprint. 100 metres and 200 metres, we start

:53:20. > :53:28.with the 100. Usain Bolt world's leading time. Struggling a little

:53:28. > :53:34.bit. Yes, he has been struggling all year, his start has not been

:53:34. > :53:41.explosive. Usain Bolt is critical of his own performances. He looks

:53:41. > :53:46.seriously at what he is doing. He struggled out of the blocks. We

:53:46. > :53:56.know he is tall and rangy but he takes time to get into his running.

:53:56. > :53:58.

:53:58. > :54:03.He was up against someone he knows knows the first three or four

:54:03. > :54:13.strides of his 100 metres is a vital to take on his training

:54:13. > :54:13.

:54:13. > :54:22.partner. 9.76 was what he was chasing. He was eclipsed. It is not

:54:22. > :54:28.often you say that about Usain Bolt. Blake, 1926. The Usain Bolt told

:54:28. > :54:37.him how to run their race. speed at which he finishes over the

:54:37. > :54:42.last 50 metres is incredible. This guy looked like he could carry on.

:54:42. > :54:47.Everyone after Usain Bolt said it was down to his village large --

:54:47. > :54:53.physiological make-up. Blake has thrown it into the dustbin and said

:54:53. > :54:59.I don't care. I can train and run serious times. Let's look forward

:54:59. > :55:07.to next year. Tyson Gay will be coming back and the Jamaicans. We

:55:07. > :55:17.could see a final with four guys going under 1905. And he could have

:55:17. > :55:17.

:55:17. > :56:40.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:56:40. > :56:47.beaten the world record, amazing to go back to the top of the

:56:47. > :56:57.leaderboard. This is a team event as well. Reasonable conditions

:56:57. > :56:57.

:56:57. > :57:45.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:57:45. > :57:51.to the season for Harry. He goes back to preparing for the Olympic

:57:51. > :57:57.selection next year. Maximum points for Great Britain. They will lead

:57:57. > :58:04.the United States in the team match, 3-2 at this moment in time. The

:58:04. > :58:12.crowd having a brilliant time. They are watching on the giant screens

:58:12. > :58:17.as well. A good run considering some of us had the luxury of a

:58:17. > :58:24.9:30am flight from Brussels. He had to get up at 5:00am to go via

:58:24. > :58:29.Amsterdam. A long route. A good performance, to be honest. A

:58:29. > :58:34.following wind. Christian working hard to stay with him. The

:58:34. > :58:44.sprinters were disappointing in Daegu generally speaking. A good

:58:44. > :58:51.

:58:51. > :58:58.A new lifetime best for Jeff Porter. The first and second-placed

:58:58. > :59:04.athletes are with Phil Jones now. A bit of friendly rivalry there?

:59:04. > :59:10.course, we like to beat each other. I'm odd enough to talk for myself

:59:10. > :59:15.now. I can give him a bit of stick. Don't pick on me, I am the old guy.

:59:15. > :59:19.It cannot last the whole season. How did you think you performed?

:59:19. > :59:24.was all right. I ran in Brussels yesterday, so, really happy to get

:59:24. > :59:29.off the plane and have some fun here. Once again, it goes to show

:59:29. > :59:34.what kind of event this is. When you look around you, it is amazing.

:59:34. > :59:44.It brings a different dimension to athletics. You have been around a

:59:44. > :59:44.

:59:44. > :59:48.long time, and this is the best crowd we have seen down here. I'm

:59:48. > :59:54.sorry! This is the best crowd we have seem a here, you must think

:59:54. > :00:01.this will just grow and grow? is amazing. I came here when it

:00:01. > :00:06.first started, and it has come on leaps and bounds. This would be

:00:06. > :00:13.perfect in Cardiff. Cardiff council, if you're listening, we have got to

:00:14. > :00:23.have this event. This is a fantastic competition, and a but a

:00:24. > :00:44.

:00:44. > :00:53.4.27. Becky Holliday drives that Barre in. Yes. It was Holly

:00:53. > :00:59.Bleasdale who had the advantage at 4.12, but now it is Becky Holliday,

:00:59. > :01:03.at 4.27. Absolutely superb, by the American former gymnast. She took

:01:03. > :01:09.up pole vaulting after she finished her gymnastics career. She had been

:01:09. > :01:14.very successful at gymnastics. She changed at the age of 16. She's 31

:01:14. > :01:24.now, and in the best form of her life. She has done for 0.60 this

:01:24. > :01:34.

:01:34. > :01:42.make sure she gets this height. Becky Holliday has got the

:01:42. > :01:47.advantage at the moment. A little bit of wind... Very powerful runner.

:01:47. > :01:57.Close, but not close enough. So, the American Becky Holliday

:01:57. > :01:58.

:01:58. > :02:04.definitely has the advantage. STEVE CRAM: now, we go all the way

:02:04. > :02:09.to the top of the track for the 150m, and we have a stellar field

:02:09. > :02:18.in this women's race. We will be seeing the world 100m champion, so

:02:18. > :02:23.here. She was also performing in Brussels last night. We would like

:02:23. > :02:26.to see our British sprinters doing a bit better on the world level,

:02:26. > :02:31.but the American sprinters have had a really, really good season.

:02:31. > :02:36.Carmelita Jeter finally getting that world title. She has wanted it,

:02:36. > :02:42.but it has been denied by various people over the last three or four

:02:42. > :02:46.years. She has been Supreme for most of this season. 10.76 last

:02:46. > :02:54.night. Colin was saying that might even have been her best run of the

:02:54. > :03:00.year. So, a tough task for Britain's best here. Aniyka Onuora

:03:00. > :03:10.certainly came away from Daegu with her head held high. Abi Oyepitan,

:03:10. > :03:23.

:03:23. > :03:30.and Dawn Harper, who we saw early pretty well, got to the semi-final

:03:30. > :03:35.in Daegu, about as good as would have been expected for her.

:03:35. > :03:40.Carmelita Jeter, second in the 200m, but the gold medal in the 100m,

:03:40. > :03:44.which was what she really wanted, and of course gold in the relay.

:03:44. > :03:48.She had another battle last night against Veronica Campbell-Brown.

:03:48. > :03:52.But she was so strong in the latter part of the race. Abi Oyepitan,

:03:52. > :03:56.still really on the comeback trail. She has not quite moved on this

:03:56. > :04:00.summer, which might be a bit of a disappointment for her. But it is

:04:00. > :04:10.good to see her here. And Dawn Harper, for the second time, full

:04:10. > :04:14.of smiles. She will not be able to hang on to as a here, I would not

:04:14. > :04:21.think, unless Carmelita Jeter is very, very tired. She was on our

:04:21. > :04:31.flight, and looked a little Felipe, but why not? I'm sure she will be

:04:31. > :04:32.

:04:32. > :04:36.wide awake year. The world best for a straight 150m, set in Manchester

:04:36. > :04:46.a couple of years ago, set by Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie, could

:04:46. > :04:54.

:04:54. > :05:00.the moment. Carmelita Jeter has got some work to do. But now, Carmelita

:05:00. > :05:06.Jeter turns it up a couple of years, and moves ahead of the rest. Aniyka

:05:06. > :05:11.Onuora gets second. 16.51, which would technically be a world best

:05:11. > :05:18.for a straight 150m. I think the wind reading was OK, just looking

:05:18. > :05:25.around for confirmation. Yes, it is. It looked to me as if she only

:05:25. > :05:30.really got going with 70 metres to go. She suddenly realised she had

:05:30. > :05:35.better get a move on. I think when Phil Jones talked to her, she might

:05:35. > :05:40.confirm that she really did take it easy out of the blocks. On the far

:05:40. > :05:47.side, Aniyka Onuora, and Abi Oyepitan, both of them ahead. But

:05:47. > :05:52.then the class of Carmelita Jeter showed. She always looks relaxed.

:05:52. > :06:00.16.50, the time has been confirmed. If ever you want to take up

:06:00. > :06:05.sprinting, this is the way to do it. Carmelita Jeter, world champion and

:06:05. > :06:15.one of the big favourites for an a Olympic title. We can find out just

:06:15. > :06:18.

:06:18. > :06:26.how easy it was, or how difficult, how easy it was, or how difficult,

:06:26. > :06:33.with Phil Jones. We have just been watching the race

:06:33. > :06:40.back. What did you think? I have never run a 150 before. It was

:06:40. > :06:44.definitely different. I'm excited to be here. I heard you only just

:06:44. > :06:51.flew in this morning? Yes, I flew in about three hours ago from

:06:51. > :06:57.Boston. How did you get your body right for the race? I tried to get

:06:57. > :07:00.as much rest as possible last night. I'm really just running off

:07:00. > :07:04.adrenalin right now. Good an exhausted but I wanted to be part

:07:04. > :07:08.of this. Now, is it time for reflection on what you have

:07:08. > :07:13.achieved this year? I will go home and sit down and reflect on

:07:13. > :07:19.everything. You have done us proud throughout the year, racing in

:07:19. > :07:23.Britain. Yet another victory today, and we look forward to 2012.

:07:23. > :07:33.definitely looking forward to to the under 12 as well. Thank you so

:07:33. > :07:37.much for having me. -- looking forward to 2012.

:07:37. > :07:40.STEVE CRAM: It is a long season for the Americans. They have their

:07:40. > :07:50.collegiate trials at the beginning of the season. She has done really

:07:50. > :07:59.

:07:59. > :08:07.well to maintain high standards we have the long jump, and a

:08:07. > :08:12.beautiful amphitheatre for everybody to enjoy it. This is

:08:12. > :08:20.Jeremy Hicks of the United States. Good take-off, sales through the

:08:21. > :08:30.air. This gives the spectators an absolutely Birds Eye view of just

:08:31. > :08:39.

:08:39. > :08:49.how fast these guys run. 7.84, good start for the American, Jeremy

:08:49. > :08:53.Hicks. We have seen the women over 150m, and now we are going to see

:08:53. > :08:57.the men over the same distance. I think one of the most unlucky men

:08:57. > :09:01.in world athletics at the minute would have to be Walter Dix. Double

:09:01. > :09:06.Olympic sprint bronze medallist, double world champion, but got

:09:06. > :09:16.absolutely thrashed last night by the world 100m champion, Yohan

:09:16. > :09:36.

:09:36. > :09:40.in Zurich. Walter Dix, ran the fourth fastest time in history for

:09:40. > :09:46.the 200m last night, but got beaten by a couple of metres by Yohan

:09:46. > :09:50.Blake. It will be very interesting to see how fast he can go. Marlon

:09:50. > :09:55.Devonish, 35 years old now, difficult to believe. He has been

:09:55. > :10:01.around for such a long time. The British record-holder for this

:10:01. > :10:05.distance, 14.88. And finally, another very fine the Prime

:10:05. > :10:14.Minister from the USA, Maurice Mitchell. The US Collegiate

:10:14. > :10:19.Champion over 200m this year. Even in the World Championships, in the

:10:19. > :10:24.heats, and also in the relay. But of course, the USA did not fit in

:10:24. > :10:31.that dramatic final, in the 4x100, so they did not get a medal. But an

:10:31. > :10:37.intriguing line-up. The experience of Marlon Devonish, and Walter Dix,

:10:37. > :10:45.one of the fastest combination sprinters, over 100m and 200m, the

:10:46. > :10:52.world has ever seen. The world record, 14.35, by Usain Bolt in

:10:52. > :10:55.2009. Marlon Devonish gets away well. Walter Dix has got work to do.

:10:56. > :11:05.Maurice Mitchell on this side going well. But here comes the class of

:11:06. > :11:07.

:11:07. > :11:13.Walter Dix of the USA. Absolutely flying. 14.65, unofficially. That

:11:13. > :11:23.could well be the third fastest time in history. I'm sure, like

:11:23. > :11:28.Carmelita Jeter, following an early flight this morning, a bit shorter

:11:28. > :11:33.than Jeter, because he only had to come from Brussels, but nonetheless,

:11:33. > :11:38.he was looking sharp. STEVE CRAM: I think he's still in

:11:38. > :11:41.shock from that race last night. The's capable of running faster

:11:41. > :11:46.than he did here today, but nonetheless it was a good run.

:11:46. > :11:54.Marlon Devonish will not be far off his best ever. In fact I think he

:11:54. > :11:58.may have just nicked a hundredth off his British best. Walter Dix,

:11:58. > :12:02.now the fourth fastest man ever at 200m, but he was still a long way

:12:02. > :12:09.200m, but he was still a long way from winning yesterday. Over to

:12:09. > :12:12.Phil Jones. Walter Dix, first of all,

:12:13. > :12:18.congratulations on that amazing performance last night. Now, you

:12:18. > :12:21.have had time to reflect on it, what did you think of it? It's

:12:21. > :12:25.definitely going in the right direction with my training,

:12:25. > :12:34.progress for 2012. I found some flaws in my race last night, which

:12:34. > :12:41.will set me up perfectly for next year. It gives me a great sense of

:12:41. > :12:46.achievement, a great sense of motivation. Marlon Devonish, if we

:12:46. > :12:51.can bring you in, as a great athlete through the years, what was

:12:51. > :12:55.your take on what happened last night, Yohan Blake decimating his

:12:55. > :13:01.personal best? Absolutely phenomenal. I watched it, and I

:13:01. > :13:05.thought, oh, man, I'm up against Walter Dix tomorrow! Absolutely

:13:05. > :13:10.amazing. I do not mind getting beaten by somebody who can run that

:13:10. > :13:13.quick. I was in the mix for a while, but... Has for this particular race,

:13:13. > :13:17.what is your take on what it is doing for athletics in this

:13:17. > :13:24.country? It is great, it is important to have a different angle

:13:24. > :13:30.on athletics. You have got the track, you have got cross country,

:13:30. > :13:36.but this is a nice new angle. You can see, it is a massive crowd.

:13:36. > :13:39.They get to feel the essence of how quick we are running. Yes, coming

:13:39. > :13:44.through the last 50, I could feel the crowd starting to lift me

:13:44. > :13:54.through, because I was starting to feel tired. It definitely helped me.

:13:54. > :13:58.

:13:58. > :14:01.Back on the north side of the River Tyne, we can go back to the long

:14:01. > :14:06.jump now. This is the fifth longest jumper in history, Dwight Phillips

:14:06. > :14:10.of the USA. But he has been having some problems with his run-up. He

:14:10. > :14:15.has done a lot of fouls. He stuttered into that one as well. I

:14:15. > :14:25.hope he is not injured. He's looking a little bit out of sorts.

:14:25. > :14:26.

:14:26. > :14:33.It has been a busy season. This event who are still being led by

:14:33. > :14:43.his teammate, Jeremy Hicks. But unfortunately is another foul for

:14:43. > :14:43.

:14:43. > :14:49.We have been discussing, different surface for the athletes, they are

:14:49. > :14:54.used to running on algal services but here it is like indoors. Yes,

:14:54. > :15:01.and she can take more speed. For Dwight Phillips, he hits the board

:15:01. > :15:10.with such speed. The timing has to be perfect. He is coming off a

:15:10. > :15:15.surprise world championship win. We thought he was injured as well, he

:15:15. > :15:23.was fantastic. He is probably a little bit flat. One event left to

:15:23. > :15:32.go. The trophy has already gone to America. It wasn't like last year

:15:32. > :15:38.when Andy Turner won a to beat Australia. He has had a good year.

:15:38. > :15:43.His last 18 months have been a sensational, as far as I'm

:15:43. > :15:51.concerned he can sit back and say he has done well and let's prepare

:15:51. > :15:57.for 2012. To deliver again a great performance. Like lots of athletes

:15:57. > :16:04.here, an interesting journey to get in Gateshead.

:16:04. > :16:10.It has been quite a journey for you. Yes, I raced in Slovakia last night.

:16:11. > :16:17.I have to get up at 1:40am to get a bus to Vienna airport, a flight to

:16:17. > :16:21.Brussels and from Brussels to here. A baggage trolley crashed into the

:16:21. > :16:28.plane so we were delayed in Brussels. It has been a long trip!

:16:28. > :16:33.Hopefully, tomorrow will be worth it. These particular events have

:16:33. > :16:40.been did you over the years. Some great success. Yes, I seem to run

:16:40. > :16:44.well at these events. It is nice to take athletics out on the street to

:16:44. > :16:50.a completely new crowd here do not necessarily know everything about

:16:50. > :16:56.athletics. They just see how fast people can run and high how -- how

:16:56. > :17:05.high the hurdles of. It is nice to be so close to them. It gives you

:17:05. > :17:15.extra... It makes me run faster. I love it! Tomorrow will be

:17:15. > :17:19.

:17:19. > :17:27.A great year for Andy Turner and also for the eventual world

:17:27. > :17:30.championship, Jason Richardson. it was impressive to see him. We

:17:30. > :17:35.recognised he was a consistent hurdler which will be the most

:17:35. > :17:41.important thing when people are under pressure. His coach John

:17:41. > :17:46.Smith has had many 110 metres hurdlers and I am surprised he did

:17:46. > :17:53.not have a world champion until this man. He has worked hard and

:17:53. > :17:57.produced a good hurdler. He will be quite a threat next year in 2012.

:17:57. > :18:07.Steve Cram would describe the race for us but first confirmation of

:18:07. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:20.As far as the 150 metres was concern, the third fastest time

:18:20. > :18:30.ever for Walter Dix. As he said, in great shape to go back to the USA

:18:30. > :18:35.to train. Marlon Devonish in second place. Maurice Mitchell in third.

:18:35. > :18:41.Nothing we can do about the American victory, we have saved the

:18:41. > :18:50.best quality race to the end. William Sharman, David Oliver, Andy

:18:50. > :18:56.Turner and Jason Richardson. A good line-up. Sharman, a decent

:18:56. > :19:01.performance in Daegu overlooked by Andy Turner's medal. And building

:19:01. > :19:07.on his Commonwealth silver from last year. I know he is still not

:19:07. > :19:14.happy with where he is at. He is setting high standards for himself.

:19:14. > :19:19.A bit of a way to go to get close to the medals. What has gone wrong

:19:19. > :19:29.with David Oliver? Superb in first half of the season, looking out of

:19:29. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:53.well, he has not been bragging. He said he does not like to brag. The

:19:53. > :20:02.high hurdles of full of dramas. This man, Jason Richardson, is the

:20:02. > :20:12.world champion. He had a good run in Zurich and Zagreb. Maintaining

:20:12. > :20:21.

:20:21. > :20:31.his form. He will be wanting to Tennant and -- Andy Turner and Will

:20:31. > :20:59.

:20:59. > :21:05.close view of the precision came out of the block before they

:21:05. > :21:10.went off. A good view of it from behind them. Let's see what the

:21:10. > :21:20.Marks & Spencer's. Although was slowed. Aquarius. Not even rising

:21:20. > :21:20.

:21:20. > :21:27.yet. As he comes up, watch and he turn his back foot. The back for it

:21:27. > :21:35.is what has triggered the false start. -- what is the starter

:21:35. > :21:41.marksman going to say? A green card. Interesting. It is a bit of fun as

:21:41. > :21:51.well. Maybe some leeway allowed by the starters marksman. I think all

:21:51. > :22:06.

:22:06. > :22:13.of the was slow to rise. -- all that the rules are that a false

:22:13. > :22:23.start, immediate disqualification normally. It is up to the

:22:23. > :22:50.

:22:50. > :22:57.clipping some of the hurdles. He has been suffering with a sore

:22:57. > :23:02.Achilles. Richardson, if you said at the start of the season, he

:23:02. > :23:05.would be able to win it dominantly over David Oliver he would have

:23:05. > :23:10.looked at you with surprise. He really has developed as the year

:23:10. > :23:20.has gone on. And certainly vindicating the title of the

:23:20. > :23:20.

:23:20. > :23:26.world's best here today. Absolutely. 13.16, that would

:23:26. > :23:33.surprise the American. Andy Turner had problems. David Oliver perhaps
