:00:49. > :00:56.Good evening and welcome to light Diamond League athletics on BBC

:00:56. > :01:02.Three. Last week we were at trackside in Rome. Highlight this

:01:02. > :01:07.evening is not over a mile, it is over 100 metres. The appearance of

:01:07. > :01:11.Usain Bolt and again he is up against Asafa Powell. Plenty of

:01:11. > :01:17.British interests, including a world champion who Dick not make it

:01:17. > :01:24.to the start line a week ago. He had a cold, but he is here tonight.

:01:24. > :01:28.My name is Dai Greene, the 400- metre hurdles world champion. I am

:01:28. > :01:33.looking forward to the Olympics, in particular competing in front of a

:01:34. > :01:39.home crowd. We do not get to do it very often. I am sure the

:01:39. > :01:46.atmosphere will be fantastic. I am cutting use my diet a little bit,

:01:46. > :01:50.enjoy myself and hopefully I can get a gold medal. If I were not an

:01:50. > :01:57.athlete, I would be involved in sport in some way, it may be

:01:57. > :02:01.coaching are playing football. That would be great. The best thing

:02:01. > :02:08.about being an athlete is due train for a living, I love waking up

:02:08. > :02:13.every day and going to the track and the gymnasium. The worst thing

:02:13. > :02:19.is having to relocate away from friends and family and not being

:02:19. > :02:25.able to go out and enjoy myself as much as everyone else seems to. And

:02:25. > :02:30.being on a strict regime for many months of the year. The first race

:02:30. > :02:34.is the men's 400 metres hurdles. You can see Dai Greene getting

:02:34. > :02:42.stripped off and ready to go. It is a big race for him tonight, he did

:02:42. > :02:48.not compete in Rome and was advised on doctor's orders. It is going to

:02:48. > :02:54.be pretty tough for him. Yes, a very tough race indeed. He is an

:02:54. > :02:59.experienced athlete. He will relish this opportunity to go out there.

:02:59. > :03:03.But this is a really tough race. This is not a stroll in the part

:03:03. > :03:13.poi Dai Greene. Fredericks from South Africa and this is the man

:03:13. > :03:15.

:03:15. > :03:18.that everybody is watching out for, Javier Culson. He is a world leader.

:03:18. > :03:24.It is at have lain for Dai Greene, he knows Javier Culson will be

:03:24. > :03:28.passing him pretty quickly. Yes, but he has got a cool head. He

:03:28. > :03:34.experienced that at the World Championships in Supp. He worked

:03:34. > :03:39.hard all the way into the line and he was rewarded with a great title.

:03:39. > :03:47.He has enough experience, he knows what he is doing. Gordon from

:03:47. > :03:53.Trinidad is one of the best up and coming 400-metre hurdler has.

:03:53. > :03:56.Yates is in one and Jack Green is into. We are talking about a

:03:56. > :04:02.Diamond League event and we have three Brits running. That is an

:04:02. > :04:12.incredible thing for us to achieve. They are very talented as well. I'm

:04:12. > :04:35.

:04:35. > :04:45.medallist. Cornel Fredericks in lane three will go off pretty

:04:45. > :04:58.

:04:58. > :05:02.first heard of. Dai Greene's strength is in the final stages.

:05:02. > :05:07.The two Britons on the inside finding it very difficult indeed.

:05:07. > :05:12.Cornel Fredericks has not gone off as quickly as I thought he would.

:05:12. > :05:19.Javier Culson is probably leading the race. Jehue Gordon is also

:05:19. > :05:24.going quite strongly. Outside Dai Greene is cordon. He has got a lot

:05:24. > :05:30.of work to do. He has not done a lot of speed training at the moment.

:05:30. > :05:39.Javier Culson is coming away with this one. In second place is Jehue

:05:39. > :05:46.Gordon. Dai Greene is third. That is the fastest time in the world

:05:46. > :05:51.this year. Javier Culson has promised much. In the championship

:05:51. > :06:01.he still has to deliver, but that was a pretty emphatic run. Dai

:06:01. > :06:03.

:06:03. > :06:08.Greene said, do not worry about me. Frankly, Colin he blew the field a

:06:08. > :06:13.wave. It was very much expected. He came here with that intention and

:06:13. > :06:18.he delivered it. He was far more cautious over the early part of the

:06:18. > :06:26.race and I think he paced this excellently. It is the fastest time

:06:26. > :06:30.in the world. 47.82. In terms of Dai Greene, he was struggling down

:06:30. > :06:34.the home straight. Yes, I think he will be disappointed with that. He

:06:35. > :06:40.said he has been very strong or year, but he has not got his speed

:06:40. > :06:44.at the moment. There is still time for him to come through before the

:06:44. > :06:49.Games and proof that he can beat this man. He will be disappointed

:06:49. > :06:54.with his position, but it is his second race of the Year and he is

:06:54. > :06:59.into 49 seconds and he can breathe and focus on his training again.

:06:59. > :07:06.guess that will be the focus. His coach wanted to get his race out of

:07:06. > :07:10.the way and start the build-up to the trials, most importantly to the

:07:10. > :07:15.games themselves. We have counted down the days to the Games and to

:07:15. > :07:19.an athlete it is a very long time. Dai Greene has worked hard to be in

:07:19. > :07:25.the position he is in and he is just about getting there. Slowly

:07:25. > :07:28.but surely he is clawing his way back. As far as I am concerned, it

:07:28. > :07:34.is a relatively good performance, but he will be disappointed with

:07:34. > :07:44.that. Jack Green hobbled past us there. He ran very well a couple of

:07:44. > :07:45.

:07:45. > :07:51.days ago in Paris. 49.74 Jack, he will be disappointed with that. It

:07:51. > :08:00.is a very strange situation for them. It will be interesting when

:08:00. > :08:03.he comes in and tells us what the wind conditions are like. A bit

:08:03. > :08:10.disappointing to be honest, but given how things were last week, it

:08:10. > :08:17.was a lot to ask me to up my game. Javier Culson went off a bit too

:08:17. > :08:22.fast for my fitness level at the moment. A little bit disappointed,

:08:22. > :08:26.but hopefully I can drop back down in the next few weeks. It was a

:08:26. > :08:33.tough lane draw having Javier Culson inside you. He talked about

:08:33. > :08:37.him going off fast, and you wanted to get away well. Yes, I think I

:08:37. > :08:42.went maybe a bit too fast today, but I want to reduce that time in a

:08:42. > :08:48.few weeks of training. In a sense it is not the race you want it

:08:48. > :08:54.after having a virus. Not really, I would have probably liked an easier

:08:54. > :08:59.one. But I'm quite happy to mix with these guys. We your next race

:08:59. > :09:04.be the trials or anything else in between? Yes, I'm just training up

:09:04. > :09:10.to the trials and hopefully I can form a bit better. I'm sure you

:09:10. > :09:14.will, we know you can produce your best. A little bit of

:09:14. > :09:20.disappointment, but equally philosophical. Absolutely, a really

:09:20. > :09:25.sensible hat. He is still quite inexperience at this event, I know

:09:25. > :09:29.that sounds ridiculous, but you have got to get into the groove of

:09:29. > :09:35.400-metre hurdling and he is still testing the waters a bit, but he

:09:35. > :09:45.has got time, trust me. Let's see what's coming up over the next

:09:45. > :09:46.

:09:46. > :09:53.The men's hundred metres, Usain Bolt against Asafa Powell. In Rome

:09:53. > :09:58.Usain Bolt was back to his very best. It is Sally Pearson, the

:09:58. > :10:07.world athlete of the year and Jessica Ennis as well. Then, the

:10:07. > :10:17.men's 5000 metres. It is that test of his fitness. It will be a battle

:10:17. > :10:41.

:10:41. > :10:51.royal for the Olympics against Mo This is the men's javelin. He is

:10:51. > :11:00.

:11:00. > :11:08.always a showman. And we have also got the women's long jump. We have

:11:08. > :11:12.got Shara Proctor. We do not have any control over the field events

:11:12. > :11:19.pictures, so fingers crossed we will see as much of Shara Proctor

:11:19. > :11:29.as possible. Let's wind the clock back to Rome and that world-leading

:11:29. > :11:54.

:11:54. > :11:58.He gets enough in the end and pulls the weight. 9.76, he is back! As

:11:58. > :12:03.befits the great man he made a rather grand entrance to the

:12:03. > :12:09.stadium to be introduced to the crowd. A mix between Chitty Chitty

:12:09. > :12:15.Bang Bang and the back Mobile. A kind of work. The crowd absolutely

:12:15. > :12:19.loved it. Wherever he goes he has a following. For him it is a nice

:12:19. > :12:23.occasion. They are great memories as a young man to take back home

:12:23. > :12:29.with you when you retire. He will be thinking, I can remember that

:12:30. > :12:34.crowd in Oslo. He will come here with a little bit more confidence.

:12:34. > :12:44.Absolutely, he will be very excited to be here. He knows he is running

:12:44. > :13:01.

:13:01. > :13:08.well, so we look forward to that She is still struggling, and it is

:13:08. > :13:12.very difficult when you come back after stress injuries. This is a

:13:12. > :13:21.difficult race where you need to work hard to get your fitness

:13:21. > :13:29.levels nice and tight. This is a tough race. This is another person

:13:29. > :13:37.that Nicola knows very well indeed. Pure quality athletes we are seeing

:13:37. > :13:47.everywhere. It is never going to be an easy one. But Nicola's place is

:13:47. > :14:27.

:14:27. > :14:33.her best, but can she do it when it sun goes over the first bend. All

:14:33. > :14:37.these athletes apart from Nicola Sanders Art in the shade. We have

:14:37. > :14:47.all brought our coats in the knowledge of how could it can get

:14:47. > :15:04.

:15:04. > :15:09.here in Oslo. Nicola Sanders is in OK. Debbie Dunn has gone off very

:15:09. > :15:13.quickly, she is already up on Antyukh. In the middle of the

:15:13. > :15:20.picture, that is Amantle Montsho, the world champion, moving nice and

:15:20. > :15:26.steady. She leads at the halfway point, as they go into the second

:15:26. > :15:32.bend. She is well above all the athlete outside her. A strong run

:15:32. > :15:37.from Patricia Hall on the outside lane. Amantle Montsho comes into

:15:37. > :15:44.the straight with a massive lead. Patricia Hall, I'm sure, will

:15:44. > :15:51.suffer now. On the far side, Sanders is suffering. But look at

:15:51. > :15:56.Amantle Montsho, the time is going to be pretty useful. Debbie Dunn

:15:56. > :16:00.takes a distant third. That was a nicely judged race, you have to

:16:00. > :16:03.give her credit. She really does have a good racing brain. Double

:16:03. > :16:08.hundred metres is all about spreading your after it through the

:16:08. > :16:15.different sections of the race -- the 400 metres. She gets it right

:16:15. > :16:20.again and again. She came second in Eugene, but tonight, that was

:16:20. > :16:24.impeccable. It was, it was a solid first 200 metres, but then she

:16:24. > :16:28.began to show some real form. Coming off the bend, the transition

:16:28. > :16:34.was good, and I must say that Patricia Hall on the outside hold

:16:34. > :16:41.her form well in the last 150. When Amantle Montsho came through, she

:16:41. > :16:45.may have thought, the others may as well, but Debbie Dunn in the second

:16:45. > :16:50.lane, who got the world fastest time in. De 10, a lot of quality in

:16:50. > :16:55.the race. I Matt Clay Munch show dominated much of last season, she

:16:55. > :17:02.was second in Shanghai, but now she's back to her winning ways --

:17:02. > :17:05.Amantle Montsho dominated much of last season. She won that by over

:17:06. > :17:15.second from Patricia Hall. The Jamaican held on well, I did her

:17:15. > :17:18.and a justice. -- an injustice. A great performance. Before we came

:17:18. > :17:28.on air there were some great field events, including the women's

:17:28. > :17:40.

:17:40. > :17:50.rounds. Barrios, the winner of the three global silvers and a bronze

:17:50. > :17:59.

:17:59. > :18:08.in the world championships last round. -- best throw. She moved

:18:08. > :18:14.ahead of Barrios. Tall, elegant, there is the series. But the winner,

:18:14. > :18:21.the Croatian, the youngest ever European discus champion in 2010. A

:18:21. > :18:27.fourth-round throw of 64.89. It was the only throw in the competition

:18:27. > :18:35.over 64 metres. It was her third win in the diamond lead series, she

:18:35. > :18:45.won in Shanghai and in Eugene. Shown in terrific form. Really

:18:45. > :19:11.

:19:11. > :19:16.delivers off a well executed pork. in that race. Nicola Sanders, down

:19:17. > :19:21.in 8th. She is alongside me now. Just as Sestak race for us. I am

:19:21. > :19:26.really disappointed, I felt really good in warm-up, but I didn't feel

:19:26. > :19:31.good out them that, that is a shocking time. Just wasn't good

:19:31. > :19:35.enough. In terms of going back and looking at that, where do you think

:19:35. > :19:38.you can go from here? I haven't got anything now until the trial, so I

:19:38. > :19:44.have got a chance to get some training back in and get my body

:19:44. > :19:47.back in one piece and go from it there. It has been frustrating,

:19:47. > :19:51.these last five years, sorry to bring it up, but it must have been

:19:52. > :19:56.pretty tough. It has, because I know what I can do when I am fit

:19:56. > :20:01.and healthy and in good shape, but it is horrible going out and

:20:01. > :20:07.running nearly 53 seconds when I know I can run 49. Thanks a

:20:07. > :20:11.speaking to us, good luck for the trials. Real frustration for Nicola,

:20:11. > :20:16.she is smiling but you could sense it. It is always disappointing when

:20:16. > :20:20.you know you why in better shape than your performance shows. -- you

:20:20. > :20:26.are in better shape. It is just frustrating, she says she believes

:20:26. > :20:32.she can get under 50 seconds, so to run close to 53, you can see why

:20:32. > :20:35.she is disheartened, but I'm sure she is going to bounce back.

:20:35. > :20:39.countdown clock is ticking down to Usain Bolt, looking relaxed as

:20:39. > :20:46.normal. That run in Rome will give him a bit of confidence. He knows

:20:46. > :20:50.he is in great shape. Absolutely, a better conditions than last year, I

:20:50. > :20:57.think he will be excited talk a good performance out there, because

:20:57. > :21:01.the wind has predominantly been a tail wind. Has a Safed Powell do

:21:01. > :21:06.something to prove? He was disappointed in Rome, said he

:21:07. > :21:12.couldn't quite here begun, so it could be a closer race them in run

:21:12. > :21:15.-- he couldn't quite here the gun. We saw a great meeting in Eugene it

:21:15. > :21:21.at the weekend, lots of the highlights. Mo Farah, Reading a

:21:21. > :21:31.brilliant time in the 5000, beating can and Lisa Bekele. But also a

:21:31. > :21:44.

:21:44. > :21:50.big, big performance from at the Chinese athlete, he hadn't run

:21:50. > :22:00.under 13 seconds for a couple of years. And now he has gone even

:22:00. > :22:10.

:22:10. > :22:13.Wind assisted, but equal world record. Every time I see him run, I

:22:13. > :22:18.think of the artistry that he demonstrate over the barriers. He

:22:18. > :22:24.is so smooth, so fluent, it is a very well-drilled technique. You

:22:24. > :22:30.can remember him, our way back in Beijing, when he was frustrated, I

:22:30. > :22:35.couldn't even defend his title, now he has returned, faster than ever.

:22:35. > :22:39.12.87, yes, wind assisted, but the reality is for someone like him,

:22:39. > :22:43.ask the wind is no benefit at all. His legs are moving very quickly

:22:43. > :22:48.already. I am waiting with bated breath to see what he will

:22:48. > :22:52.ultimately produce. I think he has lived with the last four years of

:22:52. > :22:56.what happened to him in Beijing, we were sitting in the stands,

:22:56. > :23:00.watching that, and it was heartbreaking. It was, because he

:23:00. > :23:05.was frustrated all season, you could see the build up, there was a

:23:05. > :23:09.lot of pressure on him, but it was an Achilles tendon problem, and

:23:09. > :23:13.when you have no Achilles tendon power, you are in big trouble. And

:23:13. > :23:20.he tried and tried, he could feel the burden of the nation on his

:23:20. > :23:26.shoulders, but this time, I didn't pay off, but he has returned.

:23:26. > :23:36.up on the track, another hurdles race, a longer distance one. Chemos

:23:36. > :23:45.

:23:45. > :23:55.except the one that really mattered, the world championship. She has a

:23:55. > :24:00.

:24:00. > :24:06.best of just outside nine. Await. - something really quick. Chepkurui

:24:06. > :24:14.of Kenya, if we can see her anywhere,... But there is McColgan,

:24:14. > :24:18.the Scottish record holder. She is among, of course. She won bronze at

:24:18. > :24:28.the World Cup cross-country, then won the world at 10,000 by a margin

:24:28. > :24:36.

:24:36. > :24:43.of 20 seconds, so she comes from a it is very, good experience. --

:24:44. > :24:51.very, very good experience. But if Chepkurui takes on the pace then it

:24:51. > :24:55.is quite amazing, because she took on the pace in Shanghai, and came

:24:55. > :25:00.third in the end. She is a tall figure, I expect that will be her

:25:00. > :25:07.who is going straight into the lead. But it will be quick, this, I think

:25:07. > :25:15.we will have a couple of races... Yes, Chepkurui is leading, with

:25:15. > :25:19.Chemos in second and an Joura de in third. -- at Njoroge. Look how they

:25:19. > :25:25.are stretching out now, as we go through the line for the very first

:25:25. > :25:31.time. I must say, I would like to see Chemos, the calibre of athlete

:25:31. > :25:39.she is, attack this race tonight. I have a feeling she will do. Chemos

:25:39. > :25:46.did a very good job in Rome. She is winning races a fairly much at all

:25:46. > :25:52.well, I suppose you could say it. - - at will. It is time she died out

:25:52. > :26:02.there and try to get to watch the really quick territory -- she got

:26:02. > :26:05.

:26:05. > :26:08.out there. Chemos has the calibre to get down to the fast times, but

:26:08. > :26:12.all she ever does his run to win the race. There is nothing wrong

:26:12. > :26:16.with that, but I think she can expand her repertoire. A couple of

:26:16. > :26:21.the Russians were due to be here to enhance this race, but they have

:26:21. > :26:31.pulled out, they have trials, along with other trials in the near

:26:31. > :26:38.

:26:38. > :26:48.future. Lydia Rotich, moving up record holder, second in Shanghai

:26:48. > :26:54.

:26:54. > :27:01.metres to give us some idea of the pace, looking at something around

:27:01. > :27:06.three minutes four second. It would be nice to see Chemos cling on to

:27:06. > :27:09.the coat-tails of her compatriot, and urged her on an stretch away

:27:10. > :27:14.from the rest of the field. Sadly I know that some elements of the

:27:14. > :27:19.media feel that this women's steeplechase, a relatively new

:27:19. > :27:25.events, relatively underdeveloped, hasn't got great strength in depth.

:27:25. > :27:30.They are saying it has become a bit humdrum, they run around, Chemos

:27:30. > :27:36.wins, and off they go. It is not doing enough for the sport in many

:27:36. > :27:42.people's perspectives. The men, by contrast mat 10 to really attack

:27:42. > :27:49.the barriers and the water jump. It was almost a world record in Eugene

:27:50. > :27:54.last week. The women's attitude writ comes to this discipline --

:27:54. > :28:02.when it comes to this discipline, not quite as positive yet. That is

:28:02. > :28:06.quick at 1000 metres. That was under the time we were expecting,

:28:06. > :28:10.if they can maintain this sort of pace, we are going to see the

:28:10. > :28:16.fastest time in the world this year, and it is all down to Chepkurui, as

:28:16. > :28:26.we said. I'm telling you, she will be competitive. It is extraordinary,

:28:26. > :28:34.asked him has said, -- ASDA 10 has said, to regard herself as a racer

:28:34. > :28:40.as well as taking on the pace. Chemos, twice world bronze

:28:40. > :28:50.medallist. It was a surprise in 2009, and in 2011, very

:28:50. > :29:03.

:29:03. > :29:08.disappointing, as she had been year already, Vasilevskis. He hits

:29:08. > :29:17.that one very hard indeed. Doesn't get the angle of attack right, I

:29:17. > :29:27.can tell you, but so far a Fatih Avan of Turkey Leeds. -- is in the

:29:27. > :29:37.lead. His rent -- he is ranked 6th in the world, but that is a long

:29:37. > :29:41.

:29:41. > :29:46.end. But they really are motoring down the back straight now in this

:29:46. > :29:50.3000 metres steeplechase. Chepkurui, doing a brilliant job over the

:29:50. > :29:55.first 1000, looks as though she is hanging on, and a big gap opening

:29:55. > :30:04.up now has they get into this race, and Chepkurui is now in second

:30:04. > :30:10.place, as it happens. Chemos has taken over the lead. Ayalew is

:30:10. > :30:17.third, then the Sofia Assefa, and then tucked in behind her, just

:30:17. > :30:23.trying to identify... Oh it is Njoroge. That first kilometre was

:30:23. > :30:26.impressive. They must have been listening! Having said the women

:30:26. > :30:32.steeplechase -- steeplechasers do not really attack the event, they

:30:32. > :30:38.went out at the very close to nine minute place. If this medal, to his

:30:39. > :30:48.anything near as quick, I would be even shocked -- if this middle

:30:49. > :30:59.

:30:59. > :31:02.kilometre is anything near as quick, not for the great camerawork, it

:31:03. > :31:09.would be a commentator's nightmare, because they are all in the same

:31:09. > :31:19.cake. Lydia Chepkurui has done a brilliant job and she has dropped

:31:19. > :31:20.

:31:20. > :31:28.away. We are looking for a time inside 6.0 8.83. It is well inside

:31:29. > :31:34.the world best at the moment. Milcah Chemos is still there. So is

:31:34. > :31:38.Sofia Assefa. It is down to three as they go through the line with a

:31:38. > :31:44.couple of laps to go in this 3000 metres steeplechase. They will have

:31:44. > :31:54.had a look at the clock, and the pace still being maintained. If

:31:54. > :31:57.

:31:57. > :32:07.there is a sprint finish on the end, which one would expect from Milcah

:32:07. > :32:17.

:32:17. > :32:23.Chemos. Milcah Chemos leaves. would like to see that the much

:32:23. > :32:28.steeplechasers running on the flat more or without the barriers. That

:32:28. > :32:34.makes you a more rounded athlete and a bettors deport desert.

:32:34. > :32:39.Certainly their male counterparts do that. You see the men racing

:32:39. > :32:43.over the flats and using the strength from the flat. If you

:32:44. > :32:53.think about it anyway, 99% of this event is running between the

:32:54. > :32:55.

:32:55. > :33:05.barriers. It's so Milcah Chemos switched to the steeplechase.

:33:05. > :33:07.

:33:07. > :33:12.is leading. The pace looks to me to have been pushed up a little bit.

:33:12. > :33:22.Milcah Chemos with about 300 metres to go is looking to put in a fast

:33:22. > :33:25.

:33:25. > :33:34.time as we expect a. A good race in the end. Milcah Chemos is really

:33:34. > :33:38.starting to go. What happens at the water jump? What happens at the

:33:38. > :33:48.final barrier? Into the home straight and Milcah Chemos is in

:33:48. > :33:49.

:33:49. > :33:59.full flight. Sofia Assefa back is in second place. Watched the clock.

:33:59. > :34:00.

:34:00. > :34:06.9.13 is the fastest in the world this year. That is a terrific time,

:34:06. > :34:16.it is the fastest time in the world this year by a long wait. It is a

:34:16. > :34:21.

:34:21. > :34:31.personal best. That really sets her up. Number four in the all-time

:34:31. > :34:37.

:34:37. > :34:47.list. Absolutely superb in the end. This was class. Fabulous to save.

:34:47. > :34:48.

:34:48. > :34:55.The second kilometre was just inside 3.06. Take the credit of

:34:55. > :35:02.Lydia Chepkurui, she took on the credit of leading. Milcah Chemos is

:35:02. > :35:10.not aesthetic be pleasing, but she is a lovely, light run a. At the

:35:11. > :35:20.water jumps she crosses them with her legs to one side. It makes her

:35:21. > :35:22.

:35:22. > :35:32.the 4th fastest athlete in history. It is a national record for the

:35:32. > :35:37.

:35:37. > :35:41.Kenyan. And the place times behind her were fabulous as well. We are

:35:41. > :35:51.going to continue our catch up of the events that happens a little

:35:51. > :35:54.

:35:54. > :36:04.earlier on. This contest was held in a swirling breeze. It took a

:36:04. > :36:17.

:36:17. > :36:24.three. It was his first competition of the outdoor season. It gave him

:36:24. > :36:30.third place. Christian Taylor is another of those world champions

:36:30. > :36:39.referred to earlier. He beat Phillips Idowu well and the rest of

:36:39. > :36:44.them in Eugene. That was the best he could muster. The wind proved

:36:44. > :36:51.difficult for all eight competitors. The victory went to a Russian,

:36:51. > :37:01.Adams. A fascinating character. He has a Russian mother and a Nigerian

:37:01. > :37:01.

:37:01. > :37:05.father. He is a former medical student. It is good enough for

:37:05. > :37:12.victory for the World Indoor Championship bronze medallist.

:37:12. > :37:17.Things are shaping up well for the Russian. A great performance from

:37:17. > :37:22.the Russian, a big surprise. You would have expected Cristian Tello

:37:23. > :37:29.to win that one. You would to, but he is coming from the US and it

:37:29. > :37:33.takes a couple of competitions to shake off the jet lag. But as you

:37:33. > :37:37.know it is difficult to jump off a plane and perform with huge

:37:37. > :37:43.expectations. Phillips will be looking at this result thinking, I

:37:43. > :37:46.would have loved to have been here and taken them all out in one swoop.

:37:46. > :37:51.But he may be suffering a little bit from injury at this moment in

:37:51. > :37:56.time. You won't know how important it is to try and stay healthy it.

:37:56. > :38:01.How important is it? It is important for every single event,

:38:01. > :38:06.but triple jump is particularly hard. Maybe Phillips will take some

:38:06. > :38:11.encouragement from seeing Christian Taylor. Just to update you Eilish

:38:11. > :38:14.McColgan ran a personal best, so a great result from her. Another

:38:14. > :38:24.couple of good performances from British athletes before we came on

:38:24. > :38:25.

:38:25. > :38:32.air. Gareth Warburton, a fellow countryman from Wales, 1.4 4.98 in

:38:32. > :38:36.the 800 metres. I would say his is a new Welsh record, so I am very

:38:36. > :38:41.impressed with Gareth or Britain's performance. And he took it from

:38:41. > :38:46.the lead and he won that race, he raced hard and delivered a great

:38:46. > :38:56.personal best. It is wonderful to save. We have got the men's javelin

:38:56. > :39:05.

:39:05. > :39:15.that is the pole vault that dominates the competition at the

:39:15. > :39:46.

:39:46. > :39:56.moment. That was a very positive a good draw. The indoor silver

:39:56. > :40:00.

:40:00. > :40:09.medallist at 60 metres last year. Muriel and hooray was a surprise

:40:09. > :40:14.winner in Rome 10 days ago. Kerron Stewart shared that Olympic silver

:40:14. > :40:23.medal in the 100 with Sherone Simpson. She is also in good form.

:40:23. > :40:31.10.98 on 5th May. The Briton is a huge talent and goes in lane seven.

:40:31. > :40:41.She has spent most of the winter in Florida. She has had so many back

:40:41. > :41:06.

:41:06. > :41:16.problems. Sheri-Ann Brooks, a seconds this year. What whirlwind

:41:16. > :41:55.

:41:55. > :42:05.tour here tonight? -- what will the in the world this year. It is a

:42:05. > :42:12.personal best as well. The following wind deter cause no harm.

:42:12. > :42:19.That augurs well for the remaining sprints this evening. Of course

:42:19. > :42:28.Usain Bolt will close proceedings. I have to say she looked strong on

:42:28. > :42:37.the bend. And watch the Briton on the second from the leg. I think

:42:37. > :42:47.she got second place. Yes, she does get second. I can confirm that

:42:47. > :42:49.

:42:49. > :42:57.22.42, a national record. It is a season's best for her. She has

:42:57. > :43:04.beaten some people there, like Kerron Stewart. For she has beaten

:43:04. > :43:12.Charonda Williams, Sheri-Ann Brooks. But this woman has two national

:43:12. > :43:17.records in two Diamond League events, one in Rome. It was 11.0.

:43:17. > :43:27.It was a strong field and she has done it again here. The Frenchman

:43:27. > :43:46.

:43:46. > :43:56.well to pressure. The third time at 5.72. Now all the pressure is back

:43:56. > :44:19.

:44:19. > :44:29.that one. Not really. Why not? I always want to win. I did not

:44:29. > :44:30.

:44:30. > :44:35.execute as well as I would have liked. I could have gone harder. It

:44:35. > :44:40.is an Olympic year and I want to win all my races. You are a tough

:44:40. > :44:48.lady to please. But it is an a standard. There is still time to

:44:48. > :44:53.prepare and get better. I have got the Europeans and hopefully if I am

:44:53. > :44:56.picked for the Olympics, that is where I want to make my Mars.

:44:56. > :45:00.great to come here against a world- class field and to come second and

:45:00. > :45:05.show the shape that you are end. Yes, but I have to be better than

:45:05. > :45:10.that. Some people are never satisfied, but well done and good

:45:10. > :45:15.luck for the trial. She is funny, isn't she? That is

:45:15. > :45:19.great to see that. Frustration and a little bit of anger and comparing

:45:19. > :45:25.yourself with the best in the world, that is a positive step for her.

:45:25. > :45:30.She is back and she is healthy and she is running well. She was an

:45:30. > :45:35.Olympic finalist in 2004 per. She still maintains that mindset, even

:45:35. > :45:40.though she has had years of injury. And that is wonderful to see, she

:45:40. > :45:44.is hungry and has worked hard and is reaping the benefits from that.

:45:44. > :45:54.I am looking forward to see her at the European Championships and the

:45:54. > :46:01.

:46:01. > :46:11.Olympic Games. Let's continue our champion, with that gold medal in

:46:11. > :46:15.Daegu last year. -- youngest ever. His best throw, 20.69. Very close

:46:15. > :46:25.to the 21 metre line, but that was a third place throw in the end. In

:46:25. > :46:35.second place with you -- was Dylan Armstrong of Canada. He increased

:46:35. > :46:39.

:46:39. > :46:46.his lead in round two, and that throw proved to be his best overall.

:46:46. > :46:56.Big man, using the rotation. But in first place the reigning Olympic

:46:56. > :46:57.

:46:57. > :47:03.champion, Majewski of Poland. The Olympic champion is in great form

:47:03. > :47:08.once again. This is a Olympic year. He has got that a very, very basic

:47:08. > :47:18.but very powerful technique, but look at that for a series,

:47:18. > :47:37.

:47:37. > :47:41.form of Kenenisa Bekele, he was 5th in Eugene against Mo Farah, we were

:47:41. > :47:45.chatting to his coach and early on, it feels that when the Olympics

:47:45. > :47:50.come around, this man will be ready. He gets into shape very quickly

:47:50. > :48:00.indeed, and he is going to need to. As the distance runner, you need

:48:00. > :48:03.

:48:03. > :48:09.both speed and endurance. Let's speed is building for Bekele. He

:48:09. > :48:14.has now done three sessions, that is all, on his own track, back in

:48:14. > :48:20.Addis Ababa, he has built a hotel with the track alongside it, and

:48:20. > :48:24.managed to three sessions on it. He came back from Eugene it this week,

:48:24. > :48:31.that meeting was last Saturday. He spent a few night in Holland before

:48:31. > :48:38.coming on to Oslo. We believe the pace will be quick, we are looking

:48:38. > :48:45.for 61, 62 per lap. If they were to maintain that, that is 12.40 pace.

:48:45. > :48:52.His world record, by the way, culled 0.37. So Bekele is beginning

:48:52. > :49:00.to i it territory he has it been to for a year or two, -- he hasn't

:49:00. > :49:07.been too. The pacemaker, Vincent Rono, goes through now. It is about

:49:07. > :49:14.58.5 seconds, that is too quick. Even with the Bekele back in 4th,

:49:14. > :49:17.he has gone through in about 60 flat. They need to temper this

:49:17. > :49:21.appears, or they will spoil it. Very difficult when you are

:49:21. > :49:27.operating something that is aimed to be close to world record

:49:28. > :49:33.schedule, if you go out quicker, the margins of error, as we talked

:49:33. > :49:43.about just now, are very slight indeed. Vincent Rono needs to get

:49:43. > :49:48.

:49:48. > :49:54.this right can he is way out in soon. First attempt for Lowe, she

:49:54. > :50:04.has said three first time a clearances. She has had three first

:50:04. > :50:05.

:50:05. > :50:10.time clearance is. And that is a good jump. She is absolutely superb.

:50:10. > :50:20.That is the target at the moment in this high-jump competition. She is

:50:20. > :50:43.

:50:43. > :50:48.best, and that is a great a vault, very well executed, he was positive,

:50:48. > :50:53.accelerated the plant, wonderful ride on that Pole, straight down

:50:53. > :51:01.the middle. Just clipped it slightly, not enough to take the

:51:01. > :51:11.bar off of. It took him three attempts at 5.7-2, that was risky,

:51:11. > :51:24.

:51:24. > :51:32.69 second lap, what a slowing down, that is dreadful pacemaking. They

:51:33. > :51:38.are beginning to bunch, and you don't get really quick times, very

:51:38. > :51:43.rarely, off pacemaking like that in the early stages. Dear oh dear.

:51:43. > :51:49.Bekele has eased back off the throttle. We expected him to want

:51:49. > :51:52.the pace to be fast. There are some big kickers in this race. As he is

:51:52. > :51:59.building in fitness after that calf problem, we believe he has undone

:51:59. > :52:06.all his speed work yet. When you think that Kipsiro, Sihine, they

:52:06. > :52:10.are very big Deakes, I in this field. For that reason, Kenenisa

:52:10. > :52:19.Bekele, in the grey strip, I think he wanted this to be pretty quick

:52:19. > :52:25.from the word go. They are coming up to four laps. It is beginning to

:52:25. > :52:29.get back on schedule, but it has gone all over the place. It has.

:52:29. > :52:32.Just a word about Kenenisa Bekele, he pulled out of the world

:52:32. > :52:38.championship 10,000 metres, he didn't finish the race, and talking

:52:38. > :52:43.to his managers and coaches afterwards, they said that the

:52:43. > :52:49.championships were two weeks too early for him. Three weeks later,

:52:49. > :52:53.he ran the fastest 10,000 in the world. So they say he can get race

:52:53. > :53:01.fit and get the speed work into him in a period of three weeks. Well,

:53:01. > :53:11.we will see. Still leading at the moment is Vincent Rono. We go back

:53:11. > :53:24.

:53:24. > :53:30.just. It has not really opened up pleased with it. His body language

:53:30. > :53:37.is good. Look at that! Close to the 19 metre line. That has got to be

:53:37. > :53:45.in excess of 87. He really walloped that, Vesely. He was 4th in the

:53:46. > :53:52.world championships. Second in Eugene. This is an Olympic year,

:53:52. > :53:57.and he is coming good. Now, what has he done? I think that will

:53:57. > :54:07.challenge the best in the world this year. That is the best in the

:54:07. > :54:12.

:54:12. > :54:20.to underline how poor this pacemaking has been, the second

:54:20. > :54:26.kilometre or was 2.41. It has gone all over the place. Despite the

:54:26. > :54:36.fact the field is strung out, a 62 second lap, something close to what

:54:36. > :54:54.

:54:54. > :54:58.is being asked for, it is a rotted Still Kenenisa Bekele, at the

:54:58. > :55:08.moment, back in the pack. Just watching proceedings unfold, trying

:55:08. > :55:12.

:55:12. > :55:18.to stay clear of the pace, which is wondering what is happening here.

:55:18. > :55:22.He has seen Vesely go over 88 metres, the best in the world this

:55:23. > :55:27.year, very world-class -- very much world class. What can be double

:55:27. > :55:35.Olympic champion do about that? There is no real finesse about him

:55:35. > :55:43.at the moment. That is probably about 82 again. There is no rhythm

:55:43. > :55:53.in it, no float in it. -- afloat. He is such a good technician at his

:55:53. > :55:56.

:55:56. > :56:04.best. But it is not working for him here. He has got 82.30, in second

:56:04. > :56:14.place, it is no better. Watch this, he doesn't... He is really having

:56:14. > :56:19.

:56:19. > :56:27.to work very, very hard on that through 3000 metres. The Ugandan,

:56:27. > :56:35.who was third in Doha nearly a month ago. He is in very good shape.

:56:35. > :56:38.The third kilometre or, a 65 second lap just now. They are racing, I

:56:38. > :56:44.suppose we should be pleased in a way that they are actually racing,

:56:44. > :56:54.and we haven't got any metronomic pacemaking, but it is Kipsiro, up

:56:54. > :56:56.

:56:56. > :57:03.from the younger Bekele brother, Tariku Bekele. Kipkemei in 5th.

:57:03. > :57:08.Down the outside, looking very keen for it, is Alamirew. Not close to

:57:08. > :57:14.winning this year, but produced fabulous form last year, with a big

:57:14. > :57:18.win in Doha. But he didn't really mature from that point on. They are

:57:18. > :57:26.beginning to bunch up, one feels this is going to become a tactical

:57:26. > :57:31.affair. We will be interesting to see how Gebrhiwet does come he won

:57:31. > :57:38.the Shanghai race, he is only 18, according to the records. He is up

:57:38. > :57:46.in that leading pack. We will see whether he can assert his prowess

:57:46. > :57:50.on this very, very erratic 5000 metres race. Bekele, the world

:57:50. > :57:56.record holder, the man who looks to be building this summer to watch a

:57:56. > :58:01.retention of his Olympic 10,000 metre title, it would make him a

:58:01. > :58:07.historic character, only he and Haile Gebrselassie and lesser

:58:07. > :58:14.Varenne have two consecutive wins at 10,000 metres. They almost

:58:14. > :58:21.running out in lane three there. Ganesa Bekele, second from the back

:58:21. > :58:28.of that group. -- Kenenisa Bekele. His finishing will be tested, no

:58:28. > :58:38.doubt, because he is back in about 12th place at the moment. The

:58:38. > :58:39.

:58:39. > :58:47.leader is Gebremeskel. It is a slow one again. Goodness me, nobody has

:58:47. > :58:55.been prepared to commit. I have to say, disappointing job from the

:58:55. > :58:59.pacemaking. Remember those hoping kilometres. -- opening kilometres.

:58:59. > :59:09.You cannot get really quick times and runty optimum of the clock off

:59:09. > :59:10.

:59:10. > :59:17.that. Bekele, still biding his time. A lot of movement of there. It is

:59:17. > :59:27.still Gebrhiwet in front, the younger Bekele brother in second.

:59:27. > :59:31.

:59:31. > :59:36.And they are all there. It is any his move, is he going to make his

:59:36. > :59:42.move? He is back in about 10th place on the inside. He has got an

:59:42. > :59:52.awful lot of work to do even from a lap and a half out. Still looking

:59:52. > :59:53.

:59:53. > :00:01.for his first winner of the season. He was well beaten in a 3000, then

:00:01. > :00:11.he ran at 13.01 at last week. Now he moves round the outside, back

:00:11. > :00:15.

:00:15. > :00:19.into 5th place. They come to the bell. Bekele, running wild -- wide.

:00:19. > :00:23.With 300 metres to run down the back straight, Kenenisa Bekele is

:00:23. > :00:31.letting them go. The gap is developing. He is in 7th place and

:00:32. > :00:41.not challenging. Gebrhiwet in third place. He is holding the inside,

:00:42. > :00:42.

:00:42. > :00:48.that could matter. Coming round the outside, Gebremeskel, looking

:00:49. > :00:54.strong. The bronze medallist at this distance last year, behind Mo

:00:54. > :01:01.Farah. Gebremeskel punches the air with every stride, tries to stay in

:01:01. > :01:11.front. It is going to be very tight! Gebremeskel takes it from

:01:11. > :01:24.

:01:24. > :01:30.Gebrhiwet. In third place, in the was a good run from the German. No

:01:30. > :01:36.wonder he has got an agonised smile on his face. But the Ethiopian has

:01:36. > :01:43.dominated here tonight. He beat Mo Farah indoors last winter, or the

:01:43. > :01:50.winter before last I should say. One of only two men to beat Mo

:01:50. > :01:55.Farah in 2011. Eight men in that line-up have run under 13 minutes.

:01:55. > :02:05.In the end the winning time was just under that mark. Yes, it was

:02:05. > :02:08.

:02:08. > :02:18.an erratic race, but in the end it turned out to be a true rays. Hagos

:02:18. > :02:19.

:02:19. > :02:26.Gebrhiwet was always in the right place at the right time. Now

:02:26. > :02:30.receiving the accolade of the crowd. Was a bronze medallists at the

:02:30. > :02:34.World Championships last year. He went to the world indoor

:02:34. > :02:44.championships this year in 3000 metres. His first outdoor race of

:02:44. > :02:46.

:02:46. > :02:56.the season. He won a road race in California. 54.3 was the final 400

:02:56. > :03:03.

:03:03. > :03:08.metres, that is an Olympic medal- Again it is a season's best and he

:03:08. > :03:12.is getting better shape, but it is not that but Keighley we are used

:03:12. > :03:18.to seeing. No, we are used to seeing him at the front and

:03:18. > :03:22.dictating to the front. He is missing his training and he is not

:03:22. > :03:27.quite back in shape. We heard a secret about what was going on with

:03:27. > :03:32.him in Ethiopia. He was struggling with the hard as of the track in

:03:32. > :03:38.Addis Abu Bakr and he decided to build himself a track, so he could

:03:39. > :03:43.train. It cost $800,000 so he could just get himself back in shape. He

:03:43. > :03:51.built back with his own money, so he is serious about getting ready

:03:51. > :03:59.for the Olympic Games. And great performance in Eugene, but some

:03:59. > :04:04.question marks about his performance. You can imagine how

:04:04. > :04:09.anxious Mo Farah is at this time. He knows how important victories

:04:09. > :04:14.are like this. What he wants to do is get to that tape as quickly as

:04:14. > :04:19.he possibly can. He has worked hard and crafted very well this winter

:04:19. > :04:27.and it has paid dividends for him. The confidence is showing for Mo

:04:27. > :04:31.Farah now. I think he really can focus on the

:04:31. > :04:37.build up to London knowing he is in great shape and has the world lead

:04:37. > :04:39.and has beaten the best athletes in the world. That is always key, to

:04:39. > :04:46.get your self-confidence and put yourself in the best position you

:04:46. > :04:50.can possibly be in and he has certainly done that. He has based

:04:50. > :05:00.himself in the USA and he is focused. It paid dividends last

:05:00. > :05:03.

:05:03. > :05:07.year, let's keep our fingers Asafa Powell is warming up, he is

:05:07. > :05:12.an interesting character. I think he is trying to emulate Usain

:05:12. > :05:17.Bolt's relaxed approach, but he does not quite carry it off. It is

:05:17. > :05:20.a tough thing for you now, if you are the world record Hodder and the

:05:20. > :05:30.main man and all of a sudden somebody has past year. That is

:05:30. > :05:38.

:05:38. > :05:48.home. Good performances, but nothing that he should be scared up.

:05:48. > :05:54.No, it is that magical 13 barrier. When you do is a few times, it

:05:54. > :06:04.gives you a bit of confidence. is the women's 1500 metres. This

:06:04. > :06:05.

:06:05. > :06:15.was a great race in Rome a couple of weeks ago. They are looking for

:06:15. > :06:32.

:06:32. > :06:37.a 62 second collapse. The Russian because we did not have any below

:06:37. > :06:42.four last year, yet there are several this year. This is Olympic

:06:42. > :06:52.year and it is very easy to see why concentration is on the Olympic

:06:52. > :06:55.

:06:55. > :07:05.Games. I am surprised how quick the races have been so far this year.

:07:05. > :07:22.

:07:22. > :07:32.The fastest three and the world They need to be a quick -- a bit

:07:32. > :07:41.

:07:41. > :07:51.quicker than that. The third lap is the crucial one. Dibaba, the world

:07:51. > :07:52.

:07:52. > :07:56.indoor champion is there. The race still has to unfold. The pacemaker

:07:57. > :08:01.is going strongly to the line to get the pace back up to scratch

:08:02. > :08:06.with just two to go. They have not gone for it at all, it is

:08:06. > :08:16.disappointing. They are going to beware of schedule. They are not

:08:16. > :08:35.

:08:35. > :08:45.almost schoolgirl type running. It is a little bit like that 5000

:08:45. > :09:24.

:09:24. > :09:34.are up there now behind the bit in the final stages. Look at

:09:34. > :09:45.

:09:45. > :09:55.them wind up. The crowd her loving it in the Bislett Stadion. The two

:09:55. > :10:05.

:10:05. > :10:12.big names are leading. In third place the Ukrainian came through

:10:13. > :10:18.very strongly indeed. Once again, and very strange race. It was

:10:18. > :10:28.erratic, but at the end of it all, we have got two athletes who have

:10:28. > :10:30.

:10:30. > :10:34.both broken four minutes consistently this year. A good run

:10:34. > :10:40.by the Norwegian, although she faded a little bit in the final

:10:40. > :10:50.stages. The two really talented Ethiopian athletes took it over

:10:50. > :11:21.

:11:21. > :11:26.when they wanted to. They ran it was no fluke. I must apologise for

:11:26. > :11:36.the coverage of the field events. We have no control over that, but

:11:36. > :11:44.

:11:44. > :11:50.we can catch up on the women's high She is a trained tap dancer, a

:11:50. > :11:55.ballet dancer, jazz and hip-hop, she has done everything. She says

:11:55. > :11:59.she works hard and she is not afraid of pain. She is enjoying

:11:59. > :12:09.life again now and her family is thriving. The American record

:12:09. > :12:25.

:12:25. > :12:31.attack the bar for a top athlete. She got back at the first attempt.

:12:31. > :12:36.She really attacks of the bar in a manner that one would expect of

:12:36. > :12:46.someone much shorter. The shorter athletes attack the bar much

:12:46. > :12:54.

:12:54. > :13:03.quicker than that taller athletes. Just one failure at 1.95. This was

:13:03. > :13:13.her first round jump. Sarratt Proctor has jumped 6.50 a. She is

:13:13. > :13:14.

:13:14. > :13:20.struggling a little bit. She has been in great form, Colin. I am

:13:20. > :13:23.always glancing over to see what is going on in the long jump. But the

:13:23. > :13:28.big thing that is happening is that the temperature has dropped

:13:28. > :13:33.drastically even from half-an-hour ago and that makes a big difference.

:13:33. > :13:38.It could have an effect. But it is not a warm wind either, so you can

:13:38. > :13:43.imagine they are not enjoying themselves, the long jumpers, they

:13:43. > :13:49.are out there for a long time. case you cannot wait for your Usain

:13:49. > :13:59.Bolt fakes, here is a montage, a gratuitous montage of some of his

:13:59. > :14:24.

:14:24. > :14:33.biggest and best runs. Always good to look at what he is

:14:33. > :14:37.doing. They never ceases to amaze you. If he does not run so well,

:14:37. > :14:42.everybody is scratching their heads and they say, has he lost that

:14:42. > :14:47.magic? He comes out and produces a phenomenal performance in Rome and

:14:47. > :14:52.we are all back happy again. He is the real showman here. Everybody is

:14:52. > :15:02.supporting Usain Bolt, they want to see him perform well. We are hoping

:15:02. > :15:07.tonight will be another magical This is very much about sprints

:15:07. > :15:12.denied. It is, the world athlete of the years, they are both sprinters,

:15:12. > :15:16.we have got Sally Pearson and Usain Bolt. So you're looking at the

:15:16. > :15:23.speed merchants in Oslo to be shining, and I am happy about that

:15:23. > :15:28.as you can imagine! Jessica Ennis has made the final as well, Tiffany

:15:28. > :15:35.Porter won her heat, we will hopefully have a little look back

:15:35. > :15:41.at that later on. Both looking good. It has worked wonderfully well for

:15:41. > :15:49.both those women. They have done a phenomenal job. But at last, more

:15:49. > :15:59.field events, your territory! have seen the Czech athlete, a

:15:59. > :15:59.

:15:59. > :16:03.protege of Jan Zelezny, a fantastic performance. Thorkildsen, going for

:16:03. > :16:10.his third Olympic title in London. Watching that, he has his work cut

:16:10. > :16:13.out. Absolutely. That was a Turkish record we just saw him for it. That

:16:13. > :16:19.takes Thorkildsen down into third place, he is a little bit

:16:19. > :16:23.disappointed. I think the crowd would be disappointed by that. If

:16:23. > :16:33.it people are throwing out towards 88, we would expect Thorkildsen to

:16:33. > :16:33.

:16:34. > :16:38.be there macro -- there or thereabouts. There is the main man,

:16:38. > :16:43.talking to Mark Lewis-Francis. Hopefully he is giving him some

:16:43. > :16:53.advice! They know each other quite well. All from the same stable. And

:16:53. > :16:58.

:16:58. > :17:03.Poole, looking as cool and calm as above. -- as ever. Quite noisy here,

:17:03. > :17:10.a few problems with the women's 100 metres hurdles start, Jessica put

:17:10. > :17:13.her hand up. This crowd, and knowledgeable crowd. They love to

:17:13. > :17:18.see the athletics, it is the home of distance running in Europe, I

:17:18. > :17:23.can honestly say that. So it is very busy here, but soon, as the

:17:23. > :17:28.men's 100 metres pick to their marks, there will be silence, don't

:17:28. > :17:33.you worry! We have the women's coming up next, I said to Oyepitan,

:17:33. > :17:38.good luck for the trials, but I think she is tutor run here. She is

:17:38. > :17:45.indeed, so she will hopefully be excited about running a decent 100

:17:45. > :17:51.metres. There is a nice tail wind behind them of. We just saw those

:17:51. > :18:01.pictures earlier on of Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt joking, laughing,

:18:01. > :18:20.

:18:20. > :18:27.enjoying themselves, but they will Sokolova. She is chasing 6.96. That

:18:27. > :18:37.is a good bit of discipline, absolutely spot on the board. Very

:18:37. > :18:54.

:18:54. > :19:04.basic technique, and unreasonable that first performance... 6.86!

:19:04. > :19:10.

:19:10. > :19:17.Just a few centimetres short, she the 100 metres. Mariya Ryemyen is a

:19:17. > :19:27.non-starter, she was 4th in the 200 metres. This race comes only 35

:19:27. > :19:42.

:19:42. > :19:52.minutes after the 200 metres. metres. She is an 11 second run at

:19:52. > :20:09.

:20:09. > :20:19.the 200. Tiffany Townsend, she withdrew from the 200, she comes to

:20:19. > :20:20.

:20:20. > :20:26.this one fresh. We saw Oyepitan run so well for second place in the 200,

:20:26. > :20:31.she goes in lane six hair. She is equally good at 102 hundred. Even

:20:31. > :20:39.though she is 32, she has young legs, because she has so many

:20:39. > :20:44.injuries. Charonda Williams goes in lane seven. I wonder if she will be

:20:44. > :20:53.evenly matched with a Oyepitan, side by side. In lane eight, the

:20:53. > :20:59.British record holder, Montell Douglas. She has been coached,

:20:59. > :21:09.since last November, by Maurice Greene. Wonder if we will see any

:21:09. > :21:44.

:21:44. > :21:53.10.81. That was in Kingston, lane five. It is going to be a

:21:53. > :22:03.Norwegian victory! Into a tough headwind! She gives them something

:22:03. > :22:09.

:22:09. > :22:19.to roar about here, a home win. A national record. Not as quick as

:22:19. > :22:25.

:22:25. > :22:33.that, but they head wind will have at this stage, she was way ahead of

:22:33. > :22:39.the rest of the field. Williams takes the second place, but have a

:22:39. > :22:46.look at this, right from the blocks, a beautiful first 20 metres or so.

:22:46. > :22:53.She really moated of. She held her form quite well. She went through

:22:53. > :23:03.the line there, 11.31, into a headwind of 1.2 metres per second,

:23:03. > :23:10.

:23:10. > :23:15.so that will give you some clue indeed. He doesn't get much better

:23:15. > :23:25.than that, I won in front of your home crowd, all your mates watching.

:23:25. > :23:31.

:23:31. > :23:41.winner and the second athlete. She came to away from Nigeria at the

:23:41. > :24:11.

:24:11. > :24:15.but it doesn't matter, a Norwegian and also for Lavillenie in the pole

:24:15. > :24:20.vault, we saw him go for 5.82, that was the winning jump, he looks like

:24:21. > :24:25.a hot favourite. He has and put a foot wrong all year this year, he

:24:25. > :24:31.is looking strong, confident, and it each wing is something that is

:24:31. > :24:36.very important to every athlete now, it is a big build up towards 2012.

:24:37. > :24:46.He is excited and so is all of France. Time for the final of the

:24:46. > :24:51.women's 100 metres hurdles. This was one of the heats. Jessica Ennis,

:24:51. > :24:56.making a rare outing in the diamond leak at an individual event. It was

:24:56. > :25:03.great to see, because Pearce and exploded out of the blocks, but

:25:03. > :25:07.Jessica kept a cool head. She is taking on people like Lolo Jones,

:25:07. > :25:12.and a really solid performance, it is good to see her in this final,

:25:12. > :25:17.deserved place. You know I always say she is a hurdler, and she has

:25:17. > :25:26.proved it today. Sally Pearson got out like a bolt, and just go did

:25:26. > :25:33.well to keep her composure. -- Jessica did well. In the second

:25:34. > :25:36.heat, we had a British interest with Tiffany Porter, always

:25:36. > :25:40.somebody your i think slightly struggles, but she doesn't really

:25:40. > :25:45.focus and isn't aggressive, compared to Sally Pearson, but she

:25:45. > :25:48.shows everybody a clean pair of heels here. As long as she keeps

:25:48. > :25:56.reading all the way through, every single hurdler has their own style

:25:56. > :26:00.and technique. It is hard to compare both techniques clearly.

:26:00. > :26:04.She is into the final, and this is where it all happens. What we have

:26:04. > :26:08.seen from Tiffany Porter is the ability to really get ready for

:26:08. > :26:13.major competitions when it matters, she can run those at fast times,

:26:13. > :26:17.but she sharpens up beautifully for a championship. She does it a very

:26:17. > :26:22.well indeed, when she could still a major championships, she will be in

:26:22. > :26:27.the best shape she will possibly be in. Last year, she made a mistake

:26:27. > :26:33.at the crucial time, in that final, and I can assure you, her time

:26:33. > :26:37.would have been under 12.5, so she is a talented athlete. Who would

:26:37. > :26:47.have thought that a diamond leak final, you would see two British

:26:47. > :26:54.

:26:54. > :26:59.sprint hurdlers in it. -- Diamond this young lady, she is in the

:26:59. > :27:08.first lane. Hopefully she can run a personal best, because she is in

:27:08. > :27:17.the shape to do that. Her coach has really taken her two here, a lot of

:27:17. > :27:22.kudos to him. This is a -- an opportunity she will really relish.

:27:22. > :27:27.There is Lolo Jones. If we go back to the Olympics in Beijing,

:27:27. > :27:33.remember, she had the lead, all the way to the final barrier, and

:27:33. > :27:36.crashed out, unfortunately for her. There is Carruthers, silver

:27:36. > :27:43.medallist at the World Championships. But all eyes are on

:27:43. > :27:49.this Australian lady, Sally Pearson, really bouncing onto this hurdles

:27:49. > :27:56.are seen. She ran a great semi- final last year at 12.34 and then

:27:56. > :28:05.launched itself into something incredible, 12.28 in the final to

:28:05. > :28:13.win. Tiffany Porter, feeling more confident, more settled in the UK.

:28:13. > :28:17.These US athletes still have to qualify, it is not easy. It was

:28:17. > :28:25.good to see Priscilla Bakken she has had a baby, she said to me she

:28:25. > :28:28.wanted to be in the Olympics, I think she will make it for Canada.

:28:28. > :28:38.Lot of operations for the Swiss athlete, she has had a tough year,

:28:38. > :28:40.

:28:40. > :28:50.it is good to see her here. Let's but remember she fell in Brussels -

:28:50. > :28:50.

:28:50. > :29:33.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:29:33. > :29:37.start, as you can see, the crowd is a very, very close to these

:29:37. > :29:46.athletes. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to get so

:29:46. > :29:54.close to these athletes. Tiffany Porter, has done very well for

:29:54. > :30:04.Great Britain. It was the US athlete is said she was not ready.

:30:04. > :30:14.

:30:14. > :30:23.There has to be a reason for not Carruthers, Tiffany Porter, Kristi

:30:23. > :30:33.Castlin. Priscilla Lopes-Schliep. The crowd are involved in a field

:30:33. > :30:35.

:30:35. > :30:45.event. They are desperately trying to concentrate. Sally Pearson is in

:30:45. > :30:49.

:30:49. > :30:59.the 4th lane. It is a very good lane for Tiffany Porter. The

:30:59. > :31:26.

:31:26. > :31:32.women's 100-metre hurdles. Let's was looking across. If that were to

:31:32. > :31:38.happen in the heptathlon, that would be a major problem. And she

:31:38. > :31:47.has gone. That is a great shame. She ran well in her heat. She set

:31:47. > :31:53.herself up nicely for this. This is reversed -- her best event. I fear

:31:53. > :31:59.she is going to get the red card. Unless there was a green card

:31:59. > :32:06.situation. If there is a red card, we are in trouble. She is in

:32:06. > :32:16.trouble, it is a red card, she has gone. Remember this is the first

:32:16. > :32:32.

:32:32. > :32:38.event of the heptathlon. That will qualification. She must sit and

:32:38. > :32:48.watch. Spy cannot remember having seen that before from Jessica Ennis,

:32:48. > :33:13.

:33:13. > :33:22.I have to say. The women's 100- is away from this field already.

:33:22. > :33:28.Kristi Castlin gets the second place. 12.49. That is very quick.

:33:28. > :33:38.Sally Pearson. The wind is now with them. That was a very, very good

:33:38. > :33:41.

:33:41. > :33:51.run indeed. That was an incredible performance by Sally Pearson. But,

:33:51. > :33:52.

:33:52. > :33:56.Jonathan, she had a race. She had a really strong rays. I said earlier

:33:56. > :34:06.on that Kristi Castlin has had a cracking season. She has set her

:34:06. > :34:10.personal best this year. It's you can see it every need just got

:34:10. > :34:16.third place. She looked to be going well until halfway and she seemed

:34:16. > :34:24.to be losing her rhythm. Hopefully she can explain it to us afterwards.

:34:24. > :34:27.She lost her momentum. Yes, there is no doubt about it. She is a much

:34:27. > :34:33.stronger finish it. I think Sally will be relieved with that and she

:34:33. > :34:37.may even be surprised when she sees how fast she ran and how there was

:34:37. > :34:42.somebody breathing right down her neck. It was a great race and the

:34:42. > :34:52.champion came through on top and we can understand why she is the world

:34:52. > :34:59.That is her first race in Europe, and that is going to bode well.

:34:59. > :35:05.Absolutely, no doubt about it. She did very well to run under 12.50 at.

:35:05. > :35:15.We have got Tiffany. You got out very well, you were in contention

:35:15. > :35:17.

:35:17. > :35:23.and you lost your momentum. Yes, what is my time? 12.7. Yes, it was

:35:23. > :35:28.not the best execution. I had a good start and I have to go home

:35:28. > :35:32.and think about a couple of things, but it will be OK. No it's too

:35:32. > :35:37.Sally Pearson, she always gets out well and puts you under pressure

:35:37. > :35:42.right from the gun. Yes, I knew it was going to be a good race.

:35:42. > :35:48.Unfortunately it what it was not my best performance. You win some and

:35:48. > :35:58.you lose some, so I'm on to the next. And that will be? The trials.

:35:58. > :36:02.You want to cement your selection. Yes, I am looking to do well there.

:36:02. > :36:05.The thing to remember is there are 50 days to go until the opening

:36:05. > :36:10.ceremony of the Olympic Games and she has got lots of time to get

:36:10. > :36:16.that right. Absolutely and it is a little bit about the timing issue

:36:16. > :36:23.as well. She made the top three. Sally Pearson is still on top of

:36:23. > :36:30.her game. Look at Kristi Castlin. 12.56. What an incredible

:36:30. > :36:39.performance. She came here with a mild personal best. Serious times

:36:39. > :36:48.for women's hurdling. We nearly Mr Finney, I am trying to see a Sally

:36:48. > :36:58.is coming. The men's javelin is going on. That cheering that was

:36:58. > :37:30.

:37:30. > :37:35.going on was for Andreas It is not enough and he knows it.

:37:35. > :37:43.It is just not happening yet, is it? He said he was struggling with

:37:43. > :37:53.tiring in the latter passed -- part of last season. Maybe it is not

:37:53. > :37:58.

:37:58. > :38:04.there just yet. Over six metres down. Back to the drawing board. He

:38:04. > :38:14.has got a few weeks in hand, but it is a little worrying. I think you

:38:14. > :38:14.

:38:14. > :38:18.are right and he is nowhere near the form he needs to be end.

:38:18. > :38:28.Andreas Thorkildsen is the double Olympic champion, so never discount

:38:28. > :38:29.

:38:29. > :38:39.him when it comes to the major championship. We can take a look at

:38:39. > :39:15.

:39:15. > :39:25.the women's long jump. This is the many times has a Brit run this

:39:25. > :39:27.

:39:27. > :39:33.event? 8, 9, Stephen Crabb and Steve Ovett, Steve Cram, Sebastian

:39:33. > :39:43.Coe. Sebastian Coe is watching in the stands. He will be very one

:39:43. > :40:21.

:40:21. > :40:28.metres. The Qatari his 17 years old and he is in third place. Diplock

:40:28. > :40:36.is back in about six the place at the moment. We are looking for a

:40:36. > :40:46.laps of around 55 seconds. This raised his nine yards further than

:40:46. > :40:57.

:40:57. > :41:02.a mile. -- this race. That is just quick like this is it tidies up the

:41:02. > :41:07.race. Everybody is running freely with good space around them. They

:41:07. > :41:17.are not worried about clipping elbows and clipping heels. Just

:41:17. > :41:40.

:41:40. > :41:50.about perfect tempo at this stage. flowed a little bit. But it is

:41:50. > :42:01.

:42:01. > :42:11.quick enough. The lad in second place is only 17 years old. It has

:42:11. > :42:40.

:42:40. > :42:46.experienced of all of them is at the front. They really slowed on

:42:47. > :42:56.that one. That was about a 61 second lap. Look at who is at the

:42:57. > :43:18.

:43:18. > :43:28.front. As Bell kept proper show and at 200 metres. 3.49 last week,

:43:28. > :43:29.

:43:29. > :43:36.surely quicker here tonight? He never looks overly flustered 90

:43:36. > :43:46.strides away to a four-metre victory. Time to wave. It looked

:43:46. > :44:02.

:44:02. > :44:12.rather casual and rather easy. Only marginally quicker here tonight

:44:12. > :44:49.

:44:49. > :44:56.best at the moment. It is his third track race of the evening, the

:44:56. > :45:00.men's 100 metres. Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and the two principles.

:45:00. > :45:10.There is a sprinkling of British athletes in there as well, and they

:45:10. > :45:13.

:45:13. > :45:20.will find it tough indeed. But they or 100 metres. A couple of good

:45:20. > :45:28.British athlete, Mark Lewis-Francis and Marlon Devonish. This is a good

:45:28. > :45:35.race, a good opportunity for our boys to go out there, they are all

:45:35. > :45:41.building up, trying to be a little bit calm and cool your nerves. It

:45:42. > :45:46.is a bit Kallur tonight than it was in Rome. When we were off the air,

:45:46. > :45:56.there was a very competitive relay featuring a British quartet with

:45:56. > :46:04.

:46:04. > :46:09.one making too much headway, pretty even going into the back straight.

:46:09. > :46:14.The Canadians going well. The Swiss going well on the outside, and also

:46:14. > :46:18.a Italy. Great Britain have the baton on their third leg. That is

:46:18. > :46:26.adding 10, as they come into the third 100 metres. Canada versus

:46:26. > :46:30.Great Britain as they come into the home straight. Justin Warner, it is

:46:30. > :46:38.going to be Canada first, Britain's second, Switzerland third, Italy

:46:38. > :46:45.4th. Chambers, not making too much headway on that first leg, I must

:46:45. > :46:52.say, but the rest of the team, unable to hold off the Canadian at

:46:52. > :47:02.the end. The first three are contenders, Dwain Chambers on the

:47:02. > :47:05.

:47:05. > :47:11.first leg, although you could argue they might put him on the bend. He

:47:11. > :47:16.would be your No. 1 sprinter is, Great Britain have got too many to

:47:16. > :47:22.choose from, and I think the trials will sort it out. We have got to

:47:22. > :47:25.get a well groomed team, if you have not got the four a fastest men

:47:25. > :47:35.in the world could you need to have a well groomed team and I'm not

:47:35. > :47:37.

:47:37. > :47:43.Pearson. Straight back in the groove. I just came back from where

:47:43. > :47:47.I left off, it has been fantastic! I travelled 29 hours to get here,

:47:47. > :47:52.so I am a bit jet-lagged, at but I did well. If it was a remarkable

:47:52. > :47:56.season last year, maybe even took you by surprise, how tough has it

:47:56. > :48:00.been training it through the winter with that sense of expectation?

:48:00. > :48:05.think of myself in a position I like to be in, it keeps me on my

:48:05. > :48:08.toes and keeps me hungry to be the best in the world, that is what I

:48:08. > :48:12.look forward to doing, I don't really feel the pressure when I

:48:12. > :48:17.have the confidence I have at the moment. You almost feel like you

:48:17. > :48:25.are one of us Brits! How are you feeling about London? Almost a home

:48:25. > :48:28.games, isn't it? Half a Home Games! I am really looking forward to it,

:48:28. > :48:32.and I just can't wait to feel the buzz when I get over there, it is

:48:32. > :48:36.going to be fantastic. Are you based in Europe all the way through

:48:36. > :48:44.now? I have been in Germany for a couple of weeks, I will then head

:48:44. > :48:51.to the UK. You will have to find a good home for that, you're not

:48:51. > :48:56.going to take that across, are you?, that is for my Auntie! A great

:48:56. > :49:02.ambassador for the sport, it was a real breath of fresh air last year.

:49:02. > :49:08.It was fantastic to see. You talk about one leading athlete, onto

:49:08. > :49:15.another, Usain Bolt, the man of the moment. Music blaring in the

:49:15. > :49:19.background, it is all just to get the crowd up. Before we talk about

:49:19. > :49:27.Usain Bolt and a Asafa Powell, let's do well again on British

:49:27. > :49:34.performances. We have some youngsters doing well, it is great

:49:34. > :49:43.to see, you have to think that it is under 10.1 at that we have seen

:49:43. > :49:48.our young man go under. He is in good, safe hands. And he is with

:49:48. > :49:54.Dedham and Redbridge non-League football team. -- Dagenham and

:49:54. > :49:57.Redbridge. He is such a raw talent, so good to see. It is a dodgy time

:49:57. > :50:04.for the young man, when you think about it, because when you are so

:50:04. > :50:14.fast as a junior, Mark Lewis- Francis had that dilemma, does he

:50:14. > :50:34.

:50:34. > :50:37.go to the juniors, in the end, he looked up to in the last few years.

:50:37. > :50:43.Absolutely, experienced heads around you, when you're young and

:50:43. > :50:47.hungry, what you want to do is topple these top players. When you

:50:47. > :50:56.have this background under your belt, you think yourself, I am at

:50:56. > :51:01.the fastest in the country, here is an opportunity for me to prove it.

:51:01. > :51:07.Pressure on Mark Lewis-Francis and Marlon Devonish. It is a very

:51:07. > :51:10.difficult time for these guys. They have been the people who have been

:51:10. > :51:15.the trailblazers for sprinting for some time, so they must feel

:51:15. > :51:19.frustrated that they haven't got the opportunities, haven't had the

:51:19. > :51:22.correct conditions to run particularly fast. So if there has

:51:22. > :51:28.ever a time, now is the time, because you have got the top

:51:28. > :51:33.sprinters in the world alongside you. You have got the pressure of

:51:33. > :51:43.leading a performance, so they know what the targets are. -- needing a

:51:43. > :51:45.

:51:45. > :51:49.performance. What kind of number do you think Usain will have tonight?

:51:49. > :51:52.I was just watching him do some dry runs out of the blocks, he looks a

:51:52. > :51:59.bit more confident art of the blocks. You have but to think about

:51:59. > :52:09.it. You can never think he is a bad starter when you can run 9.58. For

:52:09. > :52:32.

:52:32. > :52:39.me, he looks in good shape. Here is how have I drawn this lane a? The

:52:39. > :52:46.fastest two in the field, and the real showman himself, Usain Bolt,

:52:46. > :52:56.playing to the crowd, loving it. Deep down, knowing that he hopes

:52:56. > :52:56.

:52:56. > :53:06.there is a tail wind. A bitter disappointment for the Jamaican in

:53:06. > :53:09.

:53:09. > :53:16.the world indoors. Unfortunately, he was disqualified. And the

:53:16. > :53:23.Italian, he must be very nervous. Marlon Devonish, finishing the

:53:23. > :53:33.line-up, again, looking for that 10.18 standard. So the race we have

:53:33. > :53:33.

:53:33. > :54:53.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:54:53. > :54:56.committed the most blatant of false starts, and that is a shame. There

:54:56. > :55:06.was an opportunity for him to get back into some form of running, but

:55:06. > :55:12.in his mind, he is thinking, Usain Bolt. Asafa Powell. "I need to get

:55:12. > :55:16.away". There is this unforgiving rule, one false start, and you are

:55:16. > :55:26.disqualified. I am sure he is not even going to stick around to be

:55:26. > :55:26.

:55:26. > :56:11.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 43 seconds

:56:11. > :56:20.brilliant start, going well at the moment, here comes Usain Bolt, and

:56:20. > :56:30.Usain Bolt get said, Powell in second place. And I tell you what...

:56:30. > :56:38.

:56:38. > :56:42.Usain, he didn't have the best start I have seen him have, but

:56:42. > :56:47.that is because Asafa Powell got out of the blocks tremendously well,

:56:47. > :56:52.much better than he did in Rome. He pushed all the way, there was no

:56:52. > :56:56.real time for Usain to be looking at the clock, he had to work and

:56:56. > :57:01.work. Certainly, Asafa much better than he was in Rome. I am not sure

:57:01. > :57:10.if we will get a chance to speak to him, but I think he will be a lot

:57:10. > :57:16.happier with that if we do. There is his time, 9.79. Asafa Powell, a

:57:16. > :57:20.season's best. Out of the blocks, you can see there, there is a Asafa

:57:20. > :57:24.Powell, pushing his way, looking nice and bouncy, no problems.

:57:24. > :57:33.Agricultural Wages Board is hauling himself through to just take the

:57:33. > :57:38.victory. -- Usain is hauling himself through. It wasn't as

:57:38. > :57:45.smooth, wasn't as fluid as we saw in Rome, was it? No, he had to work

:57:45. > :57:51.a little bit harder, but when we see him, he was already looking

:57:51. > :58:01.across at the clock at that point in Rome, now he has to work to the

:58:01. > :58:05.

:58:05. > :58:10.tape. It is a great for him to me. -- a great thing. And you have got

:58:10. > :58:16.to mention a particular world champion who has got to compete.

:58:17. > :58:20.First three past the post, a brutal system. And no room for error in

:58:20. > :58:26.the Jamaican championships. An abundance of great sprinters, you

:58:26. > :58:31.can imagine. So these three gentle man, they know what it takes, and

:58:31. > :58:35.they want to get one, two, three for Jamaica at the Olympics. We

:58:35. > :58:40.shouldn't forget Marlon Devonish, he didn't do too badly. It is a

:58:40. > :58:48.tough world to be in. Certainly, Blake will be watching that at home

:58:48. > :58:54.and he will feel that maybe a bit of a witness. Maybe a step back Ms

:58:54. > :58:59.-- a step backwards from what we saw at Rome. He proved that he can

:58:59. > :59:06.win races, that is the most important thing. He came through

:59:06. > :59:14.from the back to sneak the wind, in a fast time, we must remember that.

:59:14. > :59:19.For Marlon, at disappointment at that his time... He will be a bit

:59:19. > :59:24.disappointed, but he has got the trials as well. Indeed. I think the

:59:24. > :59:32.luckiest girl was the girl who nearly got knocked over. Look at

:59:32. > :59:38.that! Grab those flowers! With a big smile! Great stuff. The showman
