:00:58. > :01:08.the best loved athletics arenas in this country, Gateshead
:01:08. > :01:20.
:01:20. > :01:28.International Stadium. Pride of place goes to a team performance, or
:01:28. > :01:38.should I say too? This weekend, once again, the storyline is all about
:01:38. > :01:38.
:01:38. > :02:29.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:02:29. > :02:35.dramatic when team glory is at stake. This is a unique weekend,
:02:35. > :02:39.isn't it? Very much so. It doesn't matter what titles or medals you
:02:39. > :02:45.have one, it's about the team, it's about digging deep and clawing back
:02:45. > :02:50.as many points as you can do the team. It's that unification that has
:02:50. > :02:54.thrilled me over the years when I used to compete, a great camaraderie
:02:55. > :03:04.and a real feeling of unity. It's one of those competitions that you
:03:04. > :03:10.think, I'm not sure that you want to do it. But when you get there, there
:03:10. > :03:15.is this special atmosphere. Yes, and intense pressure. It's not about
:03:15. > :03:20.you, it's about your peers. You really want to do well. It is
:03:20. > :03:30.special for the team. If the team is looking for inspiration, this is the
:03:30. > :03:31.
:03:31. > :03:37.right place to be. Think back to 1989 and 2000. This was a great
:03:37. > :03:47.moment. We weren't expecting anything from our team. But we
:03:47. > :03:49.
:03:49. > :03:53.weren't sure what we were going to deliver. I love hairstyle! This is
:03:53. > :04:03.the second day now. All the other major stars have a total
:04:03. > :04:07.
:04:07. > :04:14.performance, and you want to go out there are a match it. Dwayne winning
:04:14. > :04:20.the relay for the team. What's so important about 2000 is that it was
:04:20. > :04:25.full of underdogs. There is such a weight of expectation for everybody
:04:25. > :04:35.to do well because the men had done so well in previous years. They just
:04:35. > :04:43.
:04:43. > :04:50.wanted to hold their own unaided. points good the winner, 11th for
:04:50. > :04:55.second, and so on down to one point four Last Place. False starts mean
:04:55. > :05:00.disqualifications and zero points. Team scores are calculating
:05:00. > :05:10.combining men's and women's points. The team which winds as the one with
:05:10. > :05:12.
:05:12. > :05:16.the most points. Six athletes or teams are in each heat. Middle and
:05:16. > :05:19.long distance races are run as straight finals. Every event matters
:05:19. > :05:29.because it is not about how many when a team gets, it's all about the
:05:29. > :05:29.
:05:29. > :06:12.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:06:12. > :06:18.for medals or money, but there is a pressure that gets you here.
:06:19. > :06:24.Absolutely, and where it starts is the warmup track. You will feel that
:06:24. > :06:30.sense of team. It is a lot of pressure. It is about not letting
:06:30. > :06:34.your team-mates down. We will talk about predicted places shortly, but
:06:34. > :06:44.if you have been predicted to finish fourth, you want to be aiming for
:06:44. > :06:46.
:06:46. > :06:55.third. You always predicted first, so you can only go down! It is true.
:06:55. > :07:01.What I will find interesting today if it is quite blustery, so the
:07:02. > :07:06.results may change from what we predicted, just because of the wind.
:07:06. > :07:16.That is going to throw a spanner in the works. It is all about team
:07:16. > :07:19.
:07:19. > :07:24.points, remember. You got to be careful. That's going to throw a
:07:24. > :07:31.spanner in the works. There will be people running in heat one who will
:07:31. > :07:35.want to put in a exceptional performance. It's going to be
:07:35. > :07:45.exciting. Everyone matters, every point matters. Let's meet the
:07:45. > :07:45.
:07:45. > :09:10.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:09:10. > :09:16.atmosphere and less pressure. A nice I'm glad I'm a captain of this team.
:09:16. > :09:26.It's been 13 years since we actually won! We could do nothing, we could
:09:26. > :09:27.
:09:27. > :09:37.do well. I love running for my country and competing at home. The
:09:37. > :10:02.
:10:02. > :10:10.crowd makes a big difference. I'm familiar ones. I think it's a good
:10:10. > :10:15.balance. These team to merge with young stars. Particularly someone
:10:15. > :10:19.like Jessica Judd, fresh young 18-year-old, silver medallist last
:10:19. > :10:29.year. She had a real opportunity for people to get familiar with that
:10:29. > :10:31.
:10:31. > :10:40.name. An interesting selection in the women's 400 metres. Luckily, in
:10:40. > :10:44.those two events, we have the luxury of world-class replacements. It's
:10:44. > :10:47.going to be a good competition anyway because it is important we
:10:47. > :10:51.have these international events where athletes can have a real
:10:51. > :10:56.flavour about what it is like competing against the best of the
:10:56. > :11:02.world and how awkward it can be to prepare for these games. You need to
:11:02. > :11:12.learn this process. This is a real mix of well experienced athletes and
:11:12. > :11:12.
:11:12. > :12:15.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:12:15. > :12:21.new ones. That's the British team. from Turkey, Greece and Norway who
:12:21. > :12:31.were promoted up into this league. Mark Butler has been beavering away
:12:31. > :12:56.
:12:56. > :13:03.overnight, looking at who will do title. It's only Russia and Germany
:13:03. > :13:08.that have ever won this over the four years. Lots can change, and one
:13:08. > :13:15.four years. Lots can change, and one man looking at this closely is head
:13:15. > :13:20.coach, Peter Eriksson. What we have to do is mention the fact this is
:13:20. > :13:25.your first and last appearance as head coach. You must be incredibly
:13:25. > :13:35.disappointed that you can't carry on what you started. I am, and it's a
:13:35. > :13:39.
:13:39. > :13:43.Greene job. -- a dream job. We have great coaching staff, support staff.
:13:43. > :13:52.Obviously, family comes first, and that's the difficult decision you
:13:52. > :13:58.had to make. That's true. In terms of this weekend, you saw Mark
:13:58. > :14:08.Butler's predictions there. You said perhaps second place. I think it's a
:14:08. > :14:11.
:14:11. > :14:21.little bit low! If we do really well, even better. We don't know how
:14:21. > :14:31.
:14:31. > :14:41.the Russians would do here. Give us a sense of what the feeling is like.
:14:41. > :14:49.
:14:49. > :14:54.We have a good team. It's a great team spirit. My speech yesterday was
:14:55. > :14:58.five seconds in total! I have a fantastic team and I really look
:14:58. > :15:06.forward to it. Some of the other people that have come in, how are
:15:06. > :15:16.they responding? They will actually step up to the challenge. We have
:15:16. > :15:16.
:15:16. > :15:24.ten new athletes. That's exciting. The big names, they really need to
:15:24. > :15:34.lead by example. Exactly. Greg Rutherford is proud to represent the
:15:34. > :15:45.
:15:45. > :15:50.country. It's great to see he has choices. Nathan Douglas over
:15:50. > :15:55.Phillips Idowu, can you talk about those changes?
:15:56. > :16:00.Perri was not hard, she did well in the indoor Championships and she has
:16:00. > :16:04.been progressing well throughout the season. Christine Ohuruogu was
:16:04. > :16:08.always better run and her focus has been more on her training period and
:16:08. > :16:18.will be part of the Relay. So that is something we work out with the
:16:18. > :16:25.
:16:25. > :16:28.coaches. Every child has gone better to better in every event -39 macro.
:16:28. > :16:34.And the focus for Phillips Idowu was always to be at the World
:16:34. > :16:42.Championship and she has -- and he has a period to build back and I
:16:42. > :16:52.think he will do fine when it comes to World Championships, the pole is
:16:52. > :16:52.
:16:52. > :16:55.underway, let's have a look at that. When I knew the company -- when I
:16:56. > :17:00.knew the championship was going to be in this country, I was so
:17:00. > :17:04.excited. My home crowd were watching, I have been looking
:17:04. > :17:08.forward to this event. It is exciting to come and get the team
:17:08. > :17:13.together, it is really good, everybody comes together and we
:17:13. > :17:18.spend a week beforehand playing games and doing stuff as a team and
:17:18. > :17:24.having a team meeting where the head coach makes a speech on the team
:17:24. > :17:28.captain brings everybody together. It is really relaxing and you are
:17:28. > :17:32.around friends leading up to the Championships, which is great, you
:17:32. > :17:37.are more relaxed and you are enjoying it. It is good and I think
:17:37. > :17:43.there is a good team spirit. These are the team Championships. It was a
:17:43. > :17:45.massive achievement for me to have the courage to go in and decide to
:17:45. > :17:50.go for myself. A real step up from what I am used
:17:50. > :17:55.to and to take it by myself was an amazing achievement. I have just
:17:55. > :18:00.been out -- I had just been out to America and come back and this was
:18:00. > :18:05.one of my first competitions, so I am really excited to get this
:18:05. > :18:11.underway and to try the best I can. I have had good preparation so
:18:11. > :18:18.hopefully, the next few competitions will be good.
:18:18. > :18:22.Some things never change and it is always windy here in Gateshead. The
:18:22. > :18:25.pole-vault did start late and we can go to Paul Dickenson, what has been
:18:25. > :18:29.going on? There has been a problem with the
:18:29. > :18:36.wind, Holly Bleasdale and the rest have had to wait until the equipment
:18:36. > :18:41.was right. The bar has been blowing off. Everything was set for the
:18:41. > :18:51.first competition. There is quite a strong wind on the far side of the
:18:51. > :18:58.
:18:58. > :19:07.is blowing quite hard. We have good camera shots in preparation, but
:19:07. > :19:12.Holly Bleasdale will be coming later. In the hammer, one of the
:19:12. > :19:18.best throw is in the world at the moment. A season best of over 79
:19:18. > :19:24.metres. Great written's Mark Dry will compete in this to try and get
:19:24. > :19:31.as many points as possible ash Great Britain's. This guy is good, it spun
:19:32. > :19:38.away a bit, but that is long. That is around 76 metres. Not a bad
:19:38. > :19:41.effort for his first attempt. In this competition, the rules are
:19:41. > :19:45.slightly different to major championship competitions. 12
:19:45. > :19:50.athletes will take part and everybody will get three throws and
:19:50. > :19:59.only the best four will have one other in the best -- in the next
:19:59. > :20:06.round. One of the other top names in this competition now is this
:20:06. > :20:13.athlete, of Germany. The Germans are so good in the throwing events. This
:20:13. > :20:17.guy has priced -- has twice finished fourth in the World Championships
:20:17. > :20:23.and European Championships, and ninth in Beijing in the Olympics.
:20:23. > :20:29.Quite small, but very quick. The crowd are responding to a throw
:20:30. > :20:36.which challenges the previous competitor. Around about 76 metres.
:20:36. > :20:45.Very intricate footwork. He tries to accelerate the hammer and he gets
:20:45. > :20:55.faster and faster and finishes flat out. So he is behind the Polish
:20:55. > :21:01.
:21:01. > :21:10.inconsistent, but he can produce tremendous throws. Former Olympic
:21:10. > :21:15.bronze medallist in 2004, 31 years old, not quite as fast as the likes
:21:15. > :21:19.of Esse. But that could be one of the best throws he has achieved this
:21:19. > :21:27.season. I like the way he just means back and he lets the hammer do the
:21:27. > :21:37.work. He works his legs very hard. Happy with the technique, and it is
:21:37. > :21:37.
:21:37. > :21:42.very intricate. For a man who has thrown 81-45, but he is in third
:21:42. > :21:50.place, for the Turkish champion. This is going to be a real test for
:21:50. > :21:55.Mark Dry, selected over the Limerick finalist Alex Smith. -- Olympic
:21:55. > :22:00.finalist. He has got a new coach now, a former Swedish champion based
:22:00. > :22:10.in America, coming over to Great Britain and doing great work with
:22:10. > :22:14.our throwers. Just below 70 metres in the third round. 64 metres, he
:22:14. > :22:19.achieved earlier on in the competition. But he needs more, he
:22:19. > :22:29.is in 10th place at the moment. I have got a feeling that even that
:22:29. > :22:32.
:22:32. > :22:35.throw will not put him up in the table. In fact, he is in 11th place.
:22:35. > :22:44.I am sure what athlete has been watching with great interest, the
:22:44. > :22:54.Greek -- the Great British team leader, Sherry Pegg straighten --
:22:54. > :23:02.
:23:02. > :23:07.quite young on the team. It was a surprise to me, so the fact that I
:23:08. > :23:13.was considered and given that title, I am just going to be myself
:23:13. > :23:17.this weekend, that is all I can be. Just from being who I am and what
:23:17. > :23:23.people have seen me do in terms of informants is enough motivation for
:23:23. > :23:28.anybody. Do you have to give the team speech?
:23:28. > :23:34.Yes, I have got a speech. I wrote a speech out and I was reading it and
:23:34. > :23:40.I was, like, it does not come across as me. I have jotted down a few
:23:40. > :23:45.notes and that will jog my memory and I will express and say what I
:23:45. > :23:48.have to say. Short and sweet, do not go on too long.
:23:48. > :23:55.You can let actions speak louder than words.
:23:55. > :23:59.Exactly, let that do the talking. What do you see this team being able
:23:59. > :24:02.to deliver this weekend? You said there was a mixture of experience
:24:02. > :24:06.and Gold medallists from the Olympics and a lot of youth, but
:24:06. > :24:11.talented youth. Yes, I have got good faith in this
:24:11. > :24:15.team and I am glad I am captain of this team. A lot of people are in
:24:16. > :24:21.good shape, we have unions coming on and experienced athletes, it is a
:24:21. > :24:29.good mixture. I think it has been 13 years since we have one, so it will
:24:29. > :24:36.be nice if this weekend, we can win. -- won. I think we can do well.
:24:36. > :24:41.It was not a short team speech! can talk!
:24:41. > :24:45.She loves to talk but she is such a happy individual and it is a
:24:45. > :24:50.statement of how she has risen through the ranks to be kept in. It
:24:50. > :24:55.is a statement of where we want her to go in the next three years. We
:24:56. > :24:59.will look to somebody like Perri Shakes Drayton to take medals in
:24:59. > :25:03.Rio, and she is the perfect team captain for this event because she
:25:03. > :25:08.will show some of the youngsters that you work hard and you are just
:25:08. > :25:12.a stone's throw away from real success, and she has achieved that.
:25:12. > :25:17.What do you make of the rotation system with the captain? Never the
:25:17. > :25:22.same person from one event to the next. Would it serve better with
:25:22. > :25:26.more continuity? I like that we have flexibility
:25:26. > :25:29.because it gives athletes something to strive for if they want to be
:25:29. > :25:37.captain. Performances can sometimes reflect the demeanour of the team.
:25:37. > :25:44.At the moment, Perri is on the rise and she speaks with energy and digs
:25:44. > :25:49.deep -- and end-users. She will look -- and enthusiasm. She will say, I
:25:49. > :25:53.got injured last year, but look how it turned my career around. I am
:25:53. > :26:00.really excited. You know how important hurdles are,
:26:00. > :26:04.white issue running for the 400? She chose it, it has not been a
:26:04. > :26:08.random selection. She is toying if she will do the flat of hundred
:26:08. > :26:10.meter hurdles in the World Championships, she said, I am a
:26:11. > :26:15.hurdle and want to stick to the Championships.
:26:15. > :26:23.Jessica Ennis is not here, she will be competing next week. What have
:26:23. > :26:28.you made of the noise from Jessica's camp?
:26:28. > :26:33.If an athlete says they are injured, they are injured, that is it. You
:26:33. > :26:37.would not want Jessica to come out and be very below par. It is a
:26:37. > :26:42.natural build-up for her to go to Moscow but she does not have
:26:42. > :26:46.automatic selection because she is not the reigning world champion. So
:26:46. > :26:52.she will want to show some form and she will want to come out and be
:26:52. > :26:56.strong in the events that bankers for her. I would give her the
:26:56. > :27:01.respect she deserves and she only -- and if she only competes in Moscow,
:27:01. > :27:07.let her do that, she has earned that right, she does not need to show
:27:07. > :27:10.much form going in for her. The big piece of news in athletics
:27:10. > :27:20.is the positive drugs test of a running club Campbell-Brown, double
:27:20. > :27:23.
:27:23. > :27:28.Olympic champ all -- champion. Veronica. A diuretic, your response
:27:28. > :27:31.to this? Everybody was very surprised, and
:27:31. > :27:38.she was adamant it came from a specific cream she was rubbing in.
:27:38. > :27:43.You can imagine she was very vocal about her innocence. But all
:27:43. > :27:47.athletes charged with this kind of crime are very vocal. It is a
:27:47. > :27:55.masking agent involved with it and we have to remember that they are to
:27:55. > :28:03.mask more serious drugs that athletes have possibly taken.
:28:03. > :28:08.Veronica is going to fight this. She has gone to Canada to check.
:28:08. > :28:12.Almost certainly, it will be her specimen and the same test. She will
:28:12. > :28:17.protest her innocence, but, Denise, we get used to that, it almost does
:28:17. > :28:24.not mean anything. Not to me and a lot of people I have
:28:24. > :28:28.spoken to. She is so revered in Jamaica, she is the least likely
:28:28. > :28:34.athlete to be caught by something like this. She is experienced, very
:28:35. > :28:41.disappointed. It is a real stain on her character and I hope that she
:28:41. > :28:45.clears her name if she can. People have talked about the
:28:45. > :28:48.Jamaican testing, it is not up to scratch, people are pointing the
:28:48. > :28:53.finger and they are saying, this is tainting Jamaican sprinting,
:28:54. > :28:57.response? She does not trained in Jamaica and
:28:57. > :29:02.is not really associated with Jamaica because she is based in the
:29:02. > :29:06.United States and always has been, from school. It is harsh to say it
:29:06. > :29:10.belongs to Jamaican testing, not quite.
:29:10. > :29:13.It is the Jamaican trials this weekend and also the US trials, and
:29:13. > :29:23.we can look at some of those results, and they are quite
:29:23. > :29:28.
:29:28. > :29:36.impressive for the United States, but they made a conscious decision
:29:36. > :29:40.to change the 100 mater -100 metres race to get a benefit. This is a
:29:40. > :29:45.handsome tailwind, so that is why their performances are very quick.
:29:45. > :29:55.But in Jamaica, take into commit -- take into consideration the wind
:29:55. > :29:56.
:29:56. > :30:03.speed in both Championships. A bit quicker, so Usain Bolt's run would
:30:03. > :30:06.be a bit faster. So still a lot of time to go but it is exciting and we
:30:06. > :30:16.rubbing our hands together about these fast times.
:30:16. > :30:30.
:30:30. > :30:39.And who are the women? a blinding performance. They have
:30:39. > :30:43.had a comprehensive season. They are competing for their colleges, week
:30:43. > :30:53.in, week out. Although those times are impressive, let's see how they
:30:53. > :30:53.
:30:53. > :31:42.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:31:42. > :31:52.get in Moscow. Then, the big guns here, running at home. Our aim was
:31:52. > :32:02.
:32:02. > :32:12.definitely to run the European Cup. I have just come back from the US.
:32:12. > :32:14.
:32:14. > :32:17.What's the mood like? It's great to be back in the UK. I was away for
:32:17. > :32:27.quite a while. It's great to come back and see all the youngsters in
:32:27. > :32:35.
:32:35. > :32:41.the team. This is what I started. For me, I have great memories of the
:32:41. > :32:51.European Cup. It's great to give youngsters a chance and hope.
:32:51. > :32:52.
:32:52. > :33:02.many are saying they are inspired by you. It's fantastic. That's great. I
:33:02. > :33:04.
:33:04. > :33:10.was inspired by many of the athletes at a time. Overall, this weekend,
:33:10. > :33:15.what will success be for you, for the British team? The most important
:33:15. > :33:20.thing is not to get carried away. We just need to collect as many points
:33:20. > :33:30.as we can. We have a good chance of winning. It's important that we come
:33:30. > :33:46.
:33:47. > :33:56.out here and everybody gives 110%. couldn't we, Steve? What do you make
:33:57. > :33:57.
:33:57. > :34:03.of Mo Farah being here? He hasn't got a great field against him. But
:34:03. > :34:07.it should be an easy run for him. It's great he's decided to run. Mo
:34:07. > :34:12.Farah loves wearing the British vest. What happened to him last
:34:12. > :34:17.summer, he feels like he wants to pay something back. He set his
:34:17. > :34:27.programme out quite early, though. There was confusion whether you
:34:27. > :34:28.
:34:28. > :34:38.would want the 5000, 10,000. But he said his programme. An event like
:34:38. > :34:51.
:34:51. > :34:57.this is good, tactical. How would you assess his shape? He's pretty
:34:57. > :35:03.happy. I spent a day with him. He was a bit frustrated he hadn't won
:35:03. > :35:13.the 10,000 there, which was his original plan. But he's a great
:35:13. > :35:19.
:35:19. > :35:23.athlete, a world medallist. He's pretty happy. He's done a good chunk
:35:23. > :35:26.of training. He's got some races coming up now and really looking
:35:26. > :35:36.forward to them. This is the start of an important three or four weeks
:35:36. > :35:37.
:35:37. > :35:46.for him. That race coming up 5pm. for him. That race coming up 5pm.
:35:46. > :35:56.But first, heat one. Dyed Greene will be in the second of the two
:35:56. > :35:56.
:35:56. > :36:58.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:36:58. > :37:03.races. These are the lesser typical Gateshead: Sun is shining
:37:03. > :37:12.but this wind is a bit of a tricky one, and it can be for the likes of
:37:12. > :37:22.the herders -- hurdlers. Might just put them on to the hurdles a bit
:37:22. > :37:25.
:37:25. > :37:30.quickly. The combined times from the two races will determine the point
:37:30. > :37:40.at the end. It's not just about good position here, it's about getting
:37:40. > :37:40.
:37:40. > :38:44.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:38:44. > :38:53.First time under 50 seconds. Pretty impressive. That might be better
:38:53. > :38:59.than the second race. That was a really good performance by the
:38:59. > :39:03.Norwegian. He's 21. He is tall in his range and that makes a big
:39:03. > :39:09.difference when these conditions are really difficult to handle. Round
:39:09. > :39:14.the turn, there's a lot of blustery wind, but he's really confident with
:39:14. > :39:19.his technique and form and endurance. He knows the quality of
:39:19. > :39:29.the Greek inside him, but that will not face. Works hard into the line
:39:29. > :39:38.
:39:38. > :39:43.with a victory. Greene coming up in Britain that often. Everyone is
:39:43. > :39:48.counting on you to the best you can. I've had good success over the
:39:48. > :39:57.last couple of years and hope it continues over the weekend. How is
:39:57. > :40:05.it, being one of the elder statesman? The younger ones will be
:40:05. > :40:12.looking to you to learn from, get experience from. I realised I was
:40:12. > :40:22.one of the oldest people there at breakfast! It's good to be a senior
:40:22. > :40:22.
:40:22. > :40:27.member of the squad. I have a lot of experience to draw on. I have to be
:40:27. > :40:33.there to help everyone out an offer advice to all the youngsters coming
:40:33. > :40:38.through. But I'm sure they'll do really well. There couldn't be
:40:38. > :40:43.anybody better to set the tone for the team. How do you feel your form
:40:43. > :40:49.is, going into that race? I had a few setbacks before the season
:40:49. > :40:59.started, but I'm past them now. The last few weeks have gone very well.
:40:59. > :41:00.
:41:00. > :41:07.I feel as though I can give a really good performance. I feel I can win
:41:07. > :41:13.over the weekend. I feel as though I am getting better. Let's hope that
:41:13. > :41:20.continues up to the world Championships. What about the
:41:20. > :41:26.opposition? We look at the field and go, I am meant to win this one? !
:41:26. > :41:36.know I meant to win! I'm confident I will as well. Who knows what the
:41:36. > :41:39.
:41:39. > :41:44.weather will be like. Full points is the order of the day. How much do
:41:44. > :41:49.you think the home crowd will be a factor for not just you, but the
:41:49. > :41:53.team overall? It's great for all the youngsters in the squad. Many of
:41:53. > :42:01.them are in their first competition. That will inspire them and push them
:42:01. > :42:08.on. It can really make a difference. If you we have a drab,
:42:08. > :42:18.wet weekend, that can really lift your spirits up. Drab, wet weekend?
:42:18. > :42:19.
:42:19. > :42:26.Never in Gateshead! Sun is shining but it is breezy. That wind might
:42:26. > :42:32.just help them to do really well here. In a few minutes time, the
:42:32. > :42:38.opposition is something he should handle easily. He seems pretty
:42:38. > :42:48.confident, and why shouldn't he be? Always doubts when you've had
:42:48. > :42:57.
:42:57. > :43:05.operations. Building nicely towards one she is taken in this
:43:05. > :43:10.competition. We hurt in the interview before, she was feeling
:43:10. > :43:14.confident, she has come off the back of her training camp where she has
:43:14. > :43:21.been training in very warm weather indeed. She is feeling in good
:43:21. > :43:31.condition. But she's going to have to do better than this. Holly
:43:31. > :44:06.
:44:06. > :44:16.Bleasdale, two more attempts. fairly comfortable in terms of
:44:16. > :44:29.
:44:29. > :44:39.Greene. Francoise has had a pretty good season so far. Only beaten once
:44:39. > :44:39.
:44:39. > :45:24.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:45:24. > :45:34.going for maximum points here. I suspect he will hope he can put in a
:45:34. > :45:50.
:45:50. > :45:55.good performance, his second -- race two. They were delayed quite
:45:55. > :46:00.a bit getting to the start line. Dai Greene started a bit behind
:46:00. > :46:06.Francois. Through that first hurdle nicely, Dai Greene already catching
:46:06. > :46:11.up to Francois and the German, who started well in lane six. Dai Greene
:46:11. > :46:18.is moving through into the lead. The German is with him and Dai Greene
:46:18. > :46:24.needs to work harder through the winter. The German has run a good
:46:24. > :46:28.250 metres and he just stumbles a bit. The former world champion is
:46:28. > :46:35.struggling, he needs to find something on the home stretch. But
:46:35. > :46:43.here comes Dai Greene, he needs to be strong! This will be close, the
:46:43. > :46:47.German gets maximum points! And a tidy raise from Dai Greene. I
:46:47. > :46:55.thought he started slowly, he seems to get into the race, and look what
:46:55. > :47:00.that means to him! That will be a personal best. But a big shock, not
:47:00. > :47:04.a good start for the British team. And the first time Dai Greene has
:47:04. > :47:10.failed to win in the European Team Championships.
:47:10. > :47:14.That was a huge surprise, even for the crowd who are cheering him down
:47:14. > :47:17.this home straight. But it was not enough. It will be interesting to
:47:17. > :47:23.see what he has to say and how the wind may have affected his
:47:23. > :47:31.performance. He is not comfortable on that like coming into those final
:47:31. > :47:34.barriers and he struggled here. -- leg. So he will question what
:47:34. > :47:40.happened and Malcolm Arnold will have a lot to talk to him about. The
:47:40. > :47:45.German looks really aggressive and really focused.
:47:45. > :47:48.Colin, when you are expecting a win and you are one or two metres down,
:47:48. > :47:52.that will mess with your head in it, he would not have expected to be in
:47:52. > :47:57.that position. He would not have expected that and
:47:57. > :48:02.I think it starts off from the start, Steve. He did not drive out
:48:02. > :48:06.of the blocks as we have seen, he was not very aggressive. I would be
:48:06. > :48:11.interested to see what he has to say in his interview. At a strong
:48:11. > :48:16.victory for Germany, what a surprise, you can never predict.
:48:16. > :48:21.This competition is about gaining points. He pushes out of the blocks
:48:21. > :48:26.well but I think he was a little bit overcautious, perhaps looking at the
:48:26. > :48:32.wind and registering the conditions. Perhaps thinking, when Amway going
:48:32. > :48:39.to decide to change? Because it is a story and he has to keep energy for
:48:39. > :48:44.the home straight. -- blustery. He would not have seen the German, only
:48:44. > :48:48.now, as he goes past the French athlete, he thinks, this guy is in
:48:48. > :48:56.front of me, I have to work on my technique. He stumbled slightly, he
:48:56. > :48:59.fell off the hurdle, not as since -- not as slick as we used to with him.
:48:59. > :49:03.I think he would still believe he could do this, but the German does
:49:03. > :49:11.not afraid and Dai Greene has to settle with second place, very
:49:11. > :49:15.disappointed. That was not expected by us, by the
:49:15. > :49:20.crowd and particularly by Dai Greene. It is bit of a setback for
:49:20. > :49:25.him because he would expect to win this type of race, but also on the
:49:25. > :49:29.day were those around him are running personal bests, it would be
:49:29. > :49:37.interesting to see what he says about the conditions.
:49:38. > :49:46.So a new personal best for the German. Francois is third. And the
:49:46. > :49:51.Norwegian athlete will be the fourth fastest as he won the first race.
:49:51. > :49:56.Dai Greene is with Phil now. That surprised us, how about you?
:49:56. > :50:03.I was a bit surprised. I stop -- I started well and was aggressive. Too
:50:03. > :50:07.many mistakes from the top and. How were conditions?
:50:07. > :50:11.It was windy, but it was windy for all of us and I am disappointed they
:50:11. > :50:14.did not together a good race, I did not expect them to be as fast as
:50:14. > :50:21.they were and the German ran a great race.
:50:21. > :50:26.You have not had many races this season, were you a bit rusty?
:50:26. > :50:30.I was rusty going into Rome and things have got better, but I fell
:50:30. > :50:36.between the windy conditions today. It was a bit more apparent.
:50:36. > :50:41.What is next? Birmingham Grand Prix next week and
:50:41. > :50:48.hopefully a few more after that to get it it fitter.
:50:49. > :50:54.Thank you for talking to us. Dai Greene was almost shocked by
:50:54. > :51:00.that defeat. And this is another shock, Holly Bleasdale has two
:51:00. > :51:07.failures at her opening height so far, way below her season's best of
:51:07. > :51:11.4.60. She has to get this or she is out! That is a big shock! A massive
:51:11. > :51:17.shock for the British team, Peter Eriksson will be gutted by that, and
:51:17. > :51:27.that is a pile of points that Great Britain have lost, no height is
:51:27. > :51:33.
:51:33. > :51:42.achieved, no points. DME! -- dear Not the start we would have hoped
:51:42. > :51:45.for, starting with Holly Bleasdale, and no height at 4.25.
:51:45. > :51:51.A little unprofessional for me. We have talked about the effect on the
:51:51. > :51:55.team. It is so important you make adjustments I am I -- and I am not
:51:55. > :52:05.saying she was not trying, but you have to get valuable points for the
:52:05. > :52:08.
:52:08. > :52:12.disappointed, it is his last time as team coach here. Very disappointing
:52:12. > :52:22.for Dai Greene as well, but we had back to the track now for the
:52:22. > :52:47.
:52:47. > :52:55.Great Britain in the second of two is. Surprise winner of the European
:52:55. > :53:03.200 m title when she regressed by just a fraction of a second, and she
:53:03. > :53:07.won it from lane eight. The Greek athlete is the European champion, so
:53:07. > :53:16.expect a fast start from the Greek number one. The fastest woman is
:53:16. > :53:24.this athlete, 11.38. Season's best for Ashley Phillips is 11.36, just a
:53:24. > :53:31.fraction faster than the French champion. And watch out for the
:53:31. > :53:41.Polish athlete, a very fast starter, she goes in line four. Heat one, the
:53:41. > :53:46.
:53:46. > :53:56.out of her blocks, followed by Garcia of Spain. But the Frenchwoman
:53:56. > :53:58.
:53:58. > :54:07.is going to win it. The Polish in second place. 11.66, that is against
:54:07. > :54:12.a -4.6 metre per second headwind. Can you believe that? I thought the
:54:12. > :54:18.times were slow, but that headwind is huge.
:54:18. > :54:23.It is enormous. It is very difficult to go through your phases accurately
:54:23. > :54:29.when the wind is like that because it pushes you in your face and gets
:54:29. > :54:39.you up right quick venue would want. That victory was a victory, but the
:54:39. > :54:40.
:54:40. > :54:43.time is very slow indeed. They will all have to wait to see
:54:43. > :54:53.what the overall position will be, but she is the winner, no doubt
:54:53. > :54:58.
:54:58. > :55:05.way to the 100m. They have the benefit of following Quins. And this
:55:05. > :55:15.is a twice world champion, so graceful when she runs, and very
:55:15. > :55:20.
:55:20. > :55:23.bouncy. And the veteran 40-year-old British number one goes in this.
:55:23. > :55:27.Saladuha them is ranked number one and if she does not win this
:55:27. > :55:37.competition, I would be very surprised. And that is a very solid
:55:37. > :55:40.
:55:40. > :55:50.start indeed. Deceptively strong. By far and away the best we have seen
:55:50. > :55:52.
:55:52. > :55:57.so far. The British athlete winding the crowd up a bit, she belongs to
:55:57. > :56:02.Harriers in North London, and she set the world's best for a
:56:02. > :56:10.40-year-old athlete. She got eighth place in the Diamond League a little
:56:10. > :56:14.earlier this year. So this is the first round. I hope that actually
:56:15. > :56:24.means she has got a lot of more to come. She looked as though she was
:56:25. > :56:35.
:56:35. > :56:45.heading towards... The red flag is short of her season's best, 436
:56:45. > :56:47.
:56:47. > :56:54.macro. -- for Yamile Aldama. Yamile Aldama looked pretty good until
:56:54. > :56:58.sheaf -- until she bailed out, knowing she had fouled it. That was
:56:58. > :57:03.frustrating as she looked to be in very good shape. One more jump to
:57:03. > :57:13.see if she can make it into the top four.
:57:13. > :57:14.
:57:14. > :57:23.That is the result from the first heat of the women's 100m Soumare in
:57:23. > :57:29.first place. -- and Soumare in first place. Asha Philip goes for Great
:57:29. > :57:35.Britain in the next race. Asha Philip is the slowest in this
:57:35. > :57:41.heat, but not much between them. Her personal best is 22, great talent
:57:41. > :57:51.when she was a youngster. But she had a horrible injury trampolining
:57:51. > :57:51.
:57:51. > :57:55.and it took a long time to come back. A new personal best for the
:57:55. > :58:05.athletes next to her, from Belarus, she has had a very good season
:58:05. > :58:27.
:58:27. > :58:31.And the 21-year-old Russian is in the seven flame, she has also run
:58:31. > :58:41.her personal best. So athletes in good form here, an opportunity for
:58:41. > :58:55.
:58:55. > :59:03.anybody. We have not seen the heat, we will see what they get
:59:03. > :59:08.here. It is the times that just as important as the position, more so.
:59:08. > :59:11.Asha Philip gets a good start, the Ukrainian is first away and is still
:59:11. > :59:21.reading. Okparaebo is struggling to get into
:59:21. > :59:27.it. Povh wins it easily. That will be the fastest time. And we will
:59:27. > :59:32.have to sort out the rest with the results. The times are combined from
:59:32. > :59:36.the first race. No doubt about the winner, she is such a good starter.
:59:36. > :59:41.She is formally the European indoor champion from two years ago and
:59:41. > :59:46.always gets out of the blocks, but she maintained pretty well. Given
:59:46. > :59:51.they are running into this wind, that was a good run.
:59:51. > :59:55.It was a very solid performance in deed. I was watching how Povh would
:59:55. > :59:59.perform because I thought she underperformed in Oslo recently. A
:59:59. > :00:04.good victory, she was leading very contemplate and all she was looking
:00:04. > :00:10.that was the clock because that would be the most important thing.
:00:10. > :00:18.Again, a stronger aggressive runner, but she was dominant and Europe's
:00:18. > :00:25.fastest of the day. The winner of heat one would have
:00:25. > :00:31.certainly come second, but Asha Philip, fifth overall. Not too bad.
:00:31. > :00:34.I said she was the slowest going into that heat.
:00:34. > :00:40.She did very well indeed, she was not intimidated, the field was far
:00:40. > :00:50.more experienced. The start was really good and really
:00:50. > :00:50.
:00:50. > :00:55.positive, she was not fazed by anybody, she worked hard. She kept
:00:55. > :00:59.her form and she kept working into the wine, and when she gets a few
:00:59. > :01:09.more competitions behind her and excellent conditions, I can see her
:01:09. > :01:17.
:01:17. > :01:24.running much quicker indeed. So running much quicker indeed. So
:01:24. > :01:29.these are the results. Conditions are windy, into your
:01:29. > :01:33.face. It was horrible. I have never run
:01:33. > :01:37.that slowed this season, but it must have been the wind.
:01:37. > :01:41.Tell me about the atmosphere coming in to today.
:01:41. > :01:46.It was so lovely, when I heard my name, it was lovely, I am really
:01:46. > :01:49.happy to be here. Dai Greene did not win his first
:01:49. > :01:56.race and Holly Green has gone out, how much will that spread out
:01:56. > :02:00.through the team, what do you hear? We always support each other, they
:02:00. > :02:05.might get stick but I will not give them any. I am sure we will still
:02:05. > :02:11.pull through. Where do you go next?
:02:11. > :02:21.Onto the Relay in a couple of hours. Good luck with that.
:02:21. > :02:21.
:02:21. > :03:07.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:03:07. > :03:17.Asha Philip's time was good enough Spaniard. You are only allowed four
:03:17. > :03:34.
:03:35. > :03:44.two failures. She will be very angry at herself. You have got to get
:03:45. > :03:46.
:03:46. > :03:56.first-time attempts if possible and she does that. They will still be
:03:56. > :04:01.
:04:01. > :04:11.popular with everybody in athletics, which she will be so angry with
:04:11. > :04:14.
:04:14. > :04:20.herself, having not achieved how it is standing at the minute,
:04:20. > :04:25.France have had a great start. Russia might have expected that, but
:04:25. > :04:30.Great Britain are in eighth place, very close between them and the team

:36:29. > :36:36.
:36:36. > :36:44.go. 14.45 in the last round. This, for extra glory. Just enjoy this
:36:44. > :36:51.athlete. She is a master. She got close. That was only a few
:36:51. > :36:58.centimetres behind her biggest jump so far. Twice a European champion,
:36:58. > :37:03.world champion a couple of years ago, she has won the European cup,
:37:03. > :37:10.edition four times altogether in her career. Still only 30 years old. She
:37:10. > :37:18.has got a good few years left in her. She dominated this competition.
:37:18. > :37:23.Just a reminder that Yamile Aldama finished fourth. Confirmation of the
:37:23. > :37:33.result. Maximum points to the Ukraine. Look at the dominance she
:37:33. > :37:38.
:37:38. > :37:45.had. 39 centimetres ahead of the Russian. Aldama finished in fourth.
:37:45. > :37:50.The women 's discus is taking place right in the centre of the stadium.
:37:50. > :37:59.Very conducive wind conditions here. It is a headwind but the errors like
:38:00. > :38:09.that. -- the throwers. That was a good start. Just shy of the 60 metre
:38:10. > :38:11.
:38:11. > :38:20.line. Her best ever is a roundabout 58 metres. She is not far short of
:38:20. > :38:28.that. What a great start for Jade. 58.73, she is in second place for
:38:28. > :38:35.the time being. JONATHAN EDWARDS: Just getting ready for the second
:38:35. > :38:41.heat of the 100 metres. A lot of pressure on this young man, Marlon.
:38:41. > :38:47.Yes, he is looking focused there. I have competed against him before. He
:38:47. > :38:56.is a really good character. Unlike you not to go to the Olympics last
:38:56. > :39:02.year. -- unlucky. He had a bad injury. He did his best to recover
:39:02. > :39:06.from that. Did not particularly get back and get the time he wanted. He
:39:06. > :39:14.has come back this year on a mission. He has run a personal best
:39:14. > :39:24.already. I think he is going to be roughly around that time today.
:39:24. > :39:26.
:39:26. > :39:32.man, the Frenchman, he ran in Rome behind Usain Bolt. He might think it
:39:32. > :39:39.is a breeze, but I think Richard has the opportunity to put his authority
:39:39. > :39:49.down. Let's go back to the commentary box. STEVE CRAM: A tough
:39:49. > :40:00.
:40:00. > :40:05.field for Richard. He is from just the first race. Richard also needs
:40:05. > :40:12.to have half a mind on that. He is going to race this as best as he
:40:12. > :40:19.can. A big opportunity for him here. The wind is throwing the cameras
:40:19. > :40:29.around as well. It is not easy out there. Blustery conditions. The
:40:29. > :40:47.
:40:47. > :40:57.European indoor champion, such a big is hard to call, this. This is a
:40:57. > :41:02.
:41:02. > :41:09.good, strong, European field. It So, Richard Kilty, the lad from
:41:09. > :41:14.Middlesbrough, as Marlon was saying, coached by Linford Christie. He ran
:41:14. > :41:24.a 400 PB as well this year, I see. The string is there. -- the
:41:24. > :41:52.
:41:52. > :41:59.Kilty. Pretty good running from the young Frenchman. He is a world-class
:41:59. > :42:08.sprinter. Surely close now to going below ten seconds this year. All of
:42:08. > :42:14.the times will be have to -- have to be added up. Just lost a couple of
:42:14. > :42:18.places in the last 15 metres, Richard Kilty. I think he could have
:42:18. > :42:22.gone tighter in the shoulders at the finishing line. But it was a
:42:22. > :42:27.promising performance. In this race, this is where it is going to make a
:42:27. > :42:34.huge difference. The first race was into a slight headwind. This is a
:42:34. > :42:43.very strong headwind indeed. The French athlete, who is Europe 's
:42:43. > :42:52.number one runner, really showed his dominance. You can see why. 10.28
:42:52. > :42:57.into that strong wind, and excellent performance.
:42:57. > :43:04.His time is the issue. If you get a big wind coming up, it slows them
:43:04. > :43:11.down. Although Kilty ran 10.51, in fact we can have a look, but I
:43:11. > :43:19.remind you that in the first race, the first two athletes ran below
:43:19. > :43:29.10.41. We have to add another two places above Kilty. His time will
:43:29. > :43:30.
:43:30. > :43:36.end up as the sixth fastest. He is big headwind. You would have hoped
:43:36. > :43:43.to have done better overall. I got a great start. It was a bit tight
:43:44. > :43:53.towards the end. It was a big headwind. It was just a bit tight.
:43:54. > :43:54.
:43:54. > :44:02.Slightly disappointed, but again, a great start. How was the tension at
:44:02. > :44:08.the start? I was likely never before the race. It is my home track. There
:44:08. > :44:13.was a bit of expectation. But I came out and enjoyed myself. I had a lot
:44:13. > :44:18.of support from the UK athletics staff this weekend, looking after my
:44:18. > :44:23.body. It was a great atmosphere, a shame I did not perform as well as I
:44:23. > :44:31.could. What about the relay later? Are you
:44:31. > :44:41.going to figure with macro I'm not sure. -- going to figure? I'm not
:44:41. > :44:41.
:44:42. > :44:51.Blue skies overhead, a few clouds rolling by Andy wind playing havoc
:44:52. > :45:08.
:45:08. > :45:13.a late stand-in, so he has done reasonably well. And it is fifth
:45:14. > :45:19.place at the moment. We will predicting that. Russia are now
:45:19. > :45:26.level with Germany. -- we were predicting that. Poland in third
:45:26. > :45:32.place at the moment. A lot of nerves on the track, but
:45:32. > :45:37.for this next race, there are nerves in the commentary as Laura Weightman
:45:37. > :45:47.goes, Steve Cram is her coach. The fastest in the world so far, these
:45:47. > :45:53.
:45:53. > :45:59.it is nice to come back to such a big championship -- I ran.
:45:59. > :46:04.So to have the experience of winning last year, you come with an Olympic
:46:04. > :46:11.final to boast about! Last year was such a big year for
:46:11. > :46:16.learning and making the final was incredible. This year, I feel a lot
:46:16. > :46:22.more confident about the season. It is my -- it is nice to be in
:46:22. > :46:28.Gateshead for 3,000 metres, which is a different race. I loved London and
:46:28. > :46:32.that helped me get through. It is more of a home crowd for me here, it
:46:32. > :46:38.is like racing at home, Gateshead, so that will get me round and spur
:46:38. > :46:42.me on to get maximum points for the team.
:46:42. > :46:46.You can probably tell she is local, and she is used to running in these
:46:46. > :46:56.conditions at Gateshead. We can head to the Pole Vault now to Paul
:46:56. > :46:59.
:46:59. > :47:07.vicious back went and that is pushing a lot of the athletes back
:47:07. > :47:14.into the box and they got their run is wrong. The Russian is coping with
:47:14. > :47:24.the conditions quite well. And she flies over! A good result for the
:47:24. > :47:25.
:47:25. > :47:33.Russian, often overlooked because of her team-mates. But she is doing
:47:33. > :47:43.very well here, only two failures throughout her record of four
:47:43. > :47:44.
:47:44. > :47:54.clearances. Tidy vaulting. Very good indeed. We saw the German a bit
:47:54. > :47:56.
:47:56. > :48:01.earlier, she has had a few failures. Very powerful, another former
:48:01. > :48:06.gymnast. German record-holder, and that says what a quality athlete she
:48:06. > :48:16.is. She just about one of the judge's head -- she just about took
:48:16. > :48:21.
:48:21. > :48:29.women are ready for this 3,000 metres. Laura Weightman is flying
:48:29. > :48:36.the flag for Great Britain, she is from up the coast. But we do train
:48:36. > :48:46.at Gateshead, so she knows about the wind, don't worry! Good athletes to
:48:46. > :48:48.
:48:49. > :48:54.watch out for here. The Spanish and German athletes will also give her
:48:54. > :49:00.something to think about. A tactical race, Laura has never run the 3,000
:49:01. > :49:10.metres at this sort of level. There have not been any in the world this
:49:11. > :49:17.
:49:17. > :49:22.year. But it was a very encouraging race for her, the last, in May. An
:49:22. > :49:28.embarrassment of riches for Great Britain in this distance. We have
:49:28. > :49:34.got Hannah England to come, we have had Jessica Judd. We have got so
:49:34. > :49:40.many people who could step up for the women, but Laura has been given
:49:40. > :49:49.the job here. She will be nervous, but hopefully
:49:49. > :49:55.she can use this bird that Jess will have given from the 800m. -- the
:49:55. > :50:01.spur. But she is in front of a home crowd and she has to be confident
:50:01. > :50:07.and believing herself. I think she is a bit nervous that it
:50:07. > :50:14.will be very tactical. That is the Ukrainian. When you end up jogging,
:50:15. > :50:18.you get fired up for a race and the last thing... We have seen it in the
:50:18. > :50:23.European Championships, you have to not panic and be patient.
:50:23. > :50:28.We want somebody to realise that they cannot all win over the last
:50:28. > :50:31.lap and they need to go out and make a decent pace from the start.
:50:31. > :50:38.Conditions will make that a bit harder and it is difficult running a
:50:38. > :50:46.tactical race. My tactic was always to go out and make it an honest race
:50:46. > :50:55.from the start. 7.5 laps of the track and Laura
:50:55. > :50:59.Weightman's predicted position is fourth. In her interview, I did not
:50:59. > :51:07.tell her to say maximum points, but that is what she thinks and that is
:51:07. > :51:14.no bad thing! She will be patient, and they have started at a real job.
:51:14. > :51:24.-- jog. They are practically walking here. That is what the European Team
:51:24. > :51:28.Championships does. In Portugal, 2009, and remember Ashton Mark acted
:51:28. > :51:33.like it up a bit and it made sure we did not have situation marks like
:51:33. > :51:42.fashion week it made sure we did not have situations like this.
:51:42. > :51:49.-- and it made sure. Unfortunately, she is not moving at a very good
:51:49. > :51:53.pace. It is picking up a bit as she is realising nobody else is willing
:51:53. > :52:03.to take it on. The danger is that you get a lot of pushing and
:52:03. > :52:08.
:52:08. > :52:14.The Pole Vault continues. There is still three athletes in the
:52:14. > :52:21.competition. This athlete is living very dangerously. She gets four
:52:21. > :52:25.fouls, she will be eliminated so she needs this at the first attempt to
:52:26. > :52:32.stay in the competition. She has to attack it, but it has to be under
:52:32. > :52:38.control. Very smooth on the runway, and she gets it! A good bit of
:52:39. > :52:43.vaulting by Sidorova. This is one of the athletes who Holly Bleasdale was
:52:43. > :52:47.looking forward to going head-to-head with. Unfortunately,
:52:47. > :52:52.she failed her opening height. New lifetime best for the Russian,
:52:53. > :52:59.Sidorova certainly in first position. But Julia Fischer is
:52:59. > :53:04.certainly one of the world's best and great talent in this event. In
:53:04. > :53:13.second place at the moment. She really attacks that, way over 60
:53:13. > :53:20.metres. And that could challenge the lead. The French champion is in the
:53:20. > :53:26.lead at the moment. Britain's number one, Jade Lally, is in sixth place
:53:26. > :53:30.at the moment. Statisticians said she may finish no higher than
:53:30. > :53:39.eighth, she is already ahead of that. The German moves into first
:53:39. > :53:47.place. Second round of the Shot Put. The double Olympic champion. He
:53:47. > :53:57.really hit that hard. That technique has served him well over the years.
:53:57. > :53:58.
:53:58. > :54:06.A very average start to the competition. And Britain's
:54:06. > :54:16.representative through 18 metres 13. Zane Duquemin. I saw him warming up
:54:16. > :54:16.
:54:16. > :54:22.over 19 metres, so he is certainly in shape.
:54:22. > :54:27.Majewski moves into first. They have picked up the pace a bit.
:54:27. > :54:34.Laura Weightman stretches it down the back straight with the wind, and
:54:34. > :54:40.she is slowing the game. The German athlete in third place knows her
:54:40. > :54:46.quite well. The Russian is on the inside, and the Spaniard. Very slow
:54:46. > :54:52.early on. This is where you have got to be patient and not panic and
:54:52. > :54:56.think, let's get going! Let somebody else do it.
:54:56. > :55:02.Or hope somebody else will do it. Somebody will think, if nobody does
:55:02. > :55:06.it soon, I need to make a bit of a move and inject a bit of pace. But
:55:06. > :55:13.we have already seen a couple of athletes dropped off the back.
:55:13. > :55:19.Back to the Pole Vault, and Sidorova has been busy and she knows she is
:55:19. > :55:26.living on the edge. It has to be a repeat performance, first attempt to
:55:27. > :55:32.stay in the competition. She can still win it, but we still have the
:55:32. > :55:37.next athlete, who has passed on all her attempts. This would be another
:55:37. > :55:42.lifetime best for the Russian if she can get it. She has to attack it
:55:42. > :55:47.under control. It was close. Sidorova is out, but she will
:55:47. > :55:57.certainly finish in the top two or three, but still a way to go in this
:55:57. > :55:59.
:55:59. > :56:04.competition. Sidorova has competed very well indeed, a lifetime best.
:56:04. > :56:14.This younger German giant has just seen what his rival data who beat
:56:14. > :56:15.
:56:15. > :56:25.him in the Olympic games. And he launches that. He is having a bit of
:56:25. > :56:25.
:56:25. > :56:30.trouble in the warm-ups staying in the circle. So that is the target.
:56:30. > :56:34.He won everything as a youth athletes, world junior
:56:34. > :56:39.championships, and he came in and won the world senior Championships a
:56:39. > :56:47.couple of years ago. Favourite for the Olympic title, but lost it to
:56:47. > :56:53.the man who is leading the competition. But no longer. David
:56:53. > :56:59.Storl, of Germany, is leading. And the positions have not changed
:56:59. > :57:05.here. If you have dropped off, it has been very slow. Laura Weightman
:57:06. > :57:10.is itching to go, and they are starting to get a bit nervous now.
:57:10. > :57:18.Bora has put herself in the perfect position. She is almost checking
:57:18. > :57:22.herself. -- Laura. You wonder if she has got instructions from her coach
:57:23. > :57:32.not to move yet. She knows the German, they have raced each other,
:57:33. > :57:39.
:57:39. > :57:42.and the Germans think she has got to get things moving, she does not
:57:42. > :57:52.want people attacking her around the outside. Just stretching it out a
:57:52. > :57:56.
:57:56. > :58:03.bit. And the Italian is moving up on the outside. They now approach with
:58:03. > :58:13.600 to go, just over. Laura Weightman is holding on at the
:58:13. > :58:14.
:58:14. > :58:18.moment. 1.5 laps to go. She is in the perfect position here.
:58:18. > :58:21.The German is trying to decide whether she will come past or
:58:21. > :58:26.whether she will wait. Heads go down as they come round that band and
:58:26. > :58:31.into the wind, they have to find shelter if they can. And here comes
:58:31. > :58:39.an attack. The big danger is the Russian, she
:58:39. > :58:47.is the first to go to the front. The others are trying to follow. Already
:58:47. > :58:53.a two metre gap. And the crowd are ring on Laura Weightman. The Russian
:58:53. > :59:03.is cutting hard and strong, and early. Bora is pushing gone down the
:59:03. > :59:08.back straight. -- Laura. Laura Weightman needs to try to
:59:08. > :59:13.rally a bit and use the crowd support. Has the Russian gone too
:59:13. > :59:18.early? I do not think so, she is moving away and looking smooth, can
:59:18. > :59:22.Laura Weightman hold on for second? A fight for second and third, Laura
:59:22. > :59:30.Weightman was predicted to come forth. The Russian was always the
:59:30. > :59:37.danger and she has kicked hard. The Spaniard is coming on the outside.
:59:37. > :59:42.The crowd trying to lift Laura. Laura Weightman is digging deep, it
:59:42. > :59:45.will be a second place if she can hang gone! And she gets to the line
:59:45. > :59:55.in second place, behind the Russian, well done. The Spaniard is
:59:55. > :59:59.
:59:59. > :00:06.third. The Russian is a stronger athlete and she kicked hard. But
:00:06. > :00:12.that was a battle on the last lap. And I know one thing, she will be
:00:12. > :00:16.delighted to have beaten the German. But she did really well.
:00:16. > :00:21.She will have been delighted to have held onto second and to have run
:00:22. > :00:26.strongly. We expected the Russian to win, and she probably did when the
:00:26. > :00:32.smartest race, she stayed tucked in and out of trouble, she made her
:00:32. > :00:37.move and went strongly, so they were spread out. The Spaniard also gave a
:00:37. > :00:44.good battle to come back. Laura Weightman tried to go with it, the
:00:44. > :00:50.German thought she would come back here. She is starting to struggle to
:00:50. > :00:54.gain a bit of momentum, but she can hear the crowd roaring for her and
:00:54. > :00:58.probably has run a lot of laps around this track and know what the
:00:58. > :01:05.wind will be like. She gauged it perfectly and she used every last
:01:05. > :01:09.ounce that she had. To hold onto it down the home straight. The Spaniard
:01:09. > :01:15.starting to move round into third and probably she also thinks she
:01:15. > :01:19.will move past Laura Weightman, but she dug deep down that home straight
:01:19. > :01:23.and you can see the Russian is well away and running smoothly and
:01:23. > :01:33.probably had a lot more left, Laura Weightman judged it well and she
:01:33. > :01:44.
:01:44. > :01:48.remember back to the Olympic semi-final, a bit like this down the
:01:49. > :01:56.home straight. In the end, they both went through because it was 1000th
:01:56. > :02:02.of a second. That's what today is about. It's about athletes fighting
:02:02. > :02:12.for the extra place and put their personal pride to one side. Jessica
:02:12. > :02:15.
:02:15. > :02:25.Judd and now Laura Weightman have shown what this event is all about.
:02:25. > :02:29.
:02:29. > :02:32.Team manager says well done, congratulations, a good result.
:02:32. > :02:41.Maximum points for Russia. Laura has Maximum points for Russia. Laura has
:02:41. > :02:47.just got her Your coach said you were a fighter. Yes, tough when the
:02:47. > :02:53.Russian came past, so I didn't expect her to be there. There was no
:02:53. > :03:02.way the goals will come past me! Tell me about the overall
:03:02. > :03:09.performance. An incredible experience, racing here. I started
:03:09. > :03:17.my first junior races here. It was brilliant having the crowd there.
:03:17. > :03:21.Higher than your predicted position, certainly. I'm pleased with that. I
:03:21. > :03:31.did 3000 early season so the strength was there. I knew I could
:03:31. > :03:35.
:03:35. > :03:45.be near the front. Well done. The head coach was pleased, but what
:03:45. > :03:48.
:03:48. > :03:58.about the personal coach? Pretty good. Laura has had a difficult week
:03:58. > :04:03.
:04:03. > :04:07.or two. She was tired after the races she ran. A big day in front of
:04:07. > :04:14.a home crowd. We know what it's like competing in front of the crowd at
:04:14. > :04:18.Gateshead. The Russian is good, she has got a good career of winning
:04:18. > :04:22.junior championships. She's got a lot of pace on the last lap and
:04:22. > :04:29.Laura was quite able to sit with that, but all the British athletes
:04:29. > :04:39.are building towards trials in three weeks time. A brilliant summer last
:04:39. > :04:40.
:04:40. > :04:44.year. How has she taken that? of confidence but when you young
:04:44. > :04:48.athletes, you have to look ahead a little bit. This year is
:04:48. > :04:55.transitional. You heard talk about strength. We have been working on
:04:55. > :05:00.making stronger this year. She'll be 24 by the next Olympics. That will
:05:00. > :05:06.be a big opportunity for her. This year was about getting her stronger
:05:06. > :05:12.and learning more about this kind of thing. World Championships, and she
:05:12. > :05:22.wants to be more competitive. But to do that, she needs to be a little
:05:22. > :05:28.
:05:28. > :05:36.bit stronger. We will head back out women's discus competition. Jade
:05:37. > :05:46.Lally of Great Britain finished soon as sick. But Julia Fischer, we saw
:05:47. > :05:47.
:05:47. > :05:53.her take the lead a little while ago. -- finished sixth. But then she
:05:53. > :06:03.was overtaken by the Frenchwoman. She walks out the front of the
:06:03. > :06:03.
:06:03. > :06:13.circle. A little bit miffed about that. A great throw. She couldn't
:06:13. > :06:14.
:06:14. > :06:18.make it last. We have one thread to go. She goes into the circle as the
:06:18. > :06:24.big points winner here in the discus. Finished fifth at the
:06:24. > :06:34.Olympic Games. She has had a very good couple of years. Haven't had
:06:34. > :06:35.
:06:36. > :06:42.the really big throw yet. But she's very solid. And wings that way out
:06:42. > :06:46.again. That is a good throw. Tremendous finish for her. Just
:06:46. > :06:56.under her leading competition throw which came in the third round. A
:06:56. > :07:05.
:07:05. > :07:09.very simple technique. Balance and power. 12 points. She has this
:07:09. > :07:12.season 's best performance, she beats everybody here. Jade Lally of
:07:12. > :07:22.Great Britain, she went above everybody's expectations and
:07:22. > :07:36.
:07:36. > :07:42.have seen ups and downs. We'd get involved? I have been asked to get
:07:42. > :07:52.involved. I went to Philadelphia and helped the team out there and we
:07:52. > :07:56.
:07:56. > :08:04.came forth there. Hopefully, I can offer my expertise. What are your
:08:04. > :08:14.feelings like, being here? When I got up this morning, I started to
:08:14. > :08:15.
:08:15. > :08:22.pack my kit but I had to put on my suit! Nice threads, by the way!
:08:22. > :08:32.Thank you. It has been strange, but I'm enjoying it. That men's 100
:08:32. > :09:07.
:09:07. > :09:13.metres. A long foul in the second round. That's below 19 metres but I
:09:13. > :09:23.believe it to be his best throw so far. We can see what he thinks about
:09:23. > :09:25.
:09:25. > :09:31.that, but no disgrace. He is coached by John Hillier, one of our
:09:31. > :09:39.long-term shot discus coaches. I show utterly -- certainly wish John
:09:39. > :09:49.well. He has had a scare recently with his health. He is in eighth
:09:49. > :10:03.
:10:03. > :10:08.there. The wind is playing havoc with everybody's approach into the
:10:08. > :10:18.bar. She's not looking best happy. Two failures, so she's out of the
:10:18. > :10:35.
:10:35. > :10:40.customer. The only athlete to go clear at this site. And that means
:10:40. > :10:50.maximum points to Germany. It really was going to be a tussle between
:10:50. > :10:57.
:10:57. > :11:07.them. Holly Bleasdale disappeared off the scene, however. But
:11:07. > :11:07.
:11:07. > :12:03.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:12:03. > :12:08.you took a photo of it, you wouldn't hoping to do well in the next race.
:12:08. > :12:11.I have seen a lot of strapping on people, but I'm not sure whether
:12:11. > :12:21.it's the French colours or she is really going for it, with her
:12:21. > :12:36.
:12:36. > :12:46.up there in terms of world-class, but the Polish perhaps the favourite
:12:46. > :13:09.
:13:09. > :13:15.athlete is just about in the lead now. The prerace favourite has gone
:13:15. > :13:25.very slowly through the first 200 metres. Out in front, the tall
:13:25. > :13:30.
:13:30. > :13:40.French athlete, still with a six metre lead here. It's all about the
:13:40. > :14:14.
:14:14. > :14:21.unfortunately. The French athlete was out there, decided to commit all
:14:21. > :14:31.the way from the gun. She wasted a lot of energy. She literally runs
:14:31. > :14:31.
:14:31. > :14:39.and jumps. She needs to home that technique. She can polish it down.
:14:39. > :14:46.That throws her into world-class. But with all that strapping, you can
:14:46. > :14:56.understand why her technique is a little bit restricted today. Almost
:14:56. > :14:56.
:14:56. > :15:04.vertically up over the hurdles. Child, she is having a great season.
:15:04. > :15:14.She is running for Great Britain in a minute or two. What is it like
:15:14. > :15:16.
:15:16. > :15:20.coming into the team as an individual? You feel like it is 18 a
:15:20. > :15:25.bit more. Obviously, you want to use this as a stepping stone towards
:15:25. > :15:31.your own goals. But it is more of a friendly atmosphere. It feel less
:15:31. > :15:37.pressured. It has got a nice feel to it. It is rare to get to run as a
:15:37. > :15:45.team in athletics. We saw you run so well at the European indoor
:15:45. > :15:50.Championships. It must be a great confidence booster going forward?
:15:50. > :15:54.Yes. The indoor season went better than expected. It gave me a bit of
:15:54. > :15:59.confidence, knowing I have got the speed in my legs. Now it is about
:15:59. > :16:05.getting the hurdling right. I have opened up with a PB. It is nice to
:16:05. > :16:08.transfer that to the hurdles. I still want more to come from that.
:16:08. > :16:15.Is this weekend another good marker to see where you are against the
:16:15. > :16:19.best in Europe? Yes, it is a good field in the hurdles. It is a chance
:16:19. > :16:27.for me to put a marker down, compete against these girls who are topping
:16:27. > :16:33.the world, and see where I am. It is the world, and see where I am. It is
:16:33. > :16:40.a nice steppingstone. The big picture is certainly in
:16:40. > :16:47.August. This is an important step on the way. She is the fastest, by a
:16:47. > :16:50.few hundredths of a second, so that time she posts here, win or not, is
:16:50. > :17:00.going to be important because we have to add it to the times from the
:17:00. > :17:03.
:17:03. > :17:13.first race. If she is not as quick as that, she will be disappointed.
:17:13. > :17:20.
:17:20. > :17:25.The Polish racer finished quickly, but misjudged it a bit. The European
:17:25. > :17:31.list is not led by her. There are two other team competition is going
:17:31. > :17:39.on around Europe today. The Czech Republic will be hoping to get back
:17:39. > :17:49.into this Super League if you like the top league. Great Britain are in
:17:49. > :18:04.
:18:04. > :18:09.no danger of being relegated. That said she hopes to translate her fast
:18:09. > :18:16.speed into the hurdles. It doesn't quite always work that way. But she
:18:16. > :18:22.is having a great season. It is amazing, you get a physical reaction
:18:22. > :18:30.that works in both directions when your performance is reinforced. The
:18:30. > :18:35.confidence builds again. It is particularly so in the 400 metre
:18:35. > :18:40.hurdles. You have to attack the race, not be frightened. Today, they
:18:40. > :18:47.are under a lot of pressure. It will be taxing their brains mentally.
:18:47. > :18:55.Eilidh Child is replacing Perri Shakes Drayton. Difficult
:18:55. > :18:59.conditions. She will know all about that soon enough. Just a comeback to
:18:59. > :19:04.the point I was making, when you think about how well Shakes Drayton
:19:04. > :19:09.ran indoors, her first race of the year in, she was awful. She got the
:19:09. > :19:17.rhythm wrong. It is the sort of event where you can't have a really
:19:17. > :19:22.bad run, even if you are in good shape. You can push yourself, but
:19:22. > :19:32.all the good work and hamper your performance. It throws you onto the
:19:32. > :19:35.
:19:35. > :19:41.hurdles and sets you off a bit. We She is coached by Malcolm Arnold,
:19:41. > :19:51.down in Bath. That is with Dai Greene and the rest of them. She is
:19:51. > :19:59.
:19:59. > :20:06.in a good lane here. The Ukrainian two of them have started very
:20:06. > :20:14.quickly. Eilidh Child has gone out with real intent here, down the back
:20:14. > :20:24.straight. She sailed over the first three barriers. She has gone
:20:24. > :20:32.quickly. The Ukrainian will be aware of that. Look at this. She is
:20:32. > :20:38.looking strong. Into the home straight now. The wind will start.
:20:38. > :20:45.She is well clear of the rest. The Ukrainian has got no chance at the
:20:45. > :20:55.moment. Safely over the last hurdle. What a run. Maximum points for Great
:20:55. > :20:57.
:20:57. > :21:01.Britain. What a great effort! 54.42, a new PB. That puts right on terms.
:21:02. > :21:09.She attacked it right from the very first step out of the blocks. The
:21:09. > :21:17.Ukrainian did not know what hit her. That was a big step forward. In
:21:17. > :21:23.these conditions, it has been waiting to come. Peter Eriksson,
:21:23. > :21:33.that is a smile for him! He has got to be happy with that. Any child
:21:33. > :21:40.will be beside herself. -- Eilidh Child. No fear. She will be
:21:40. > :21:44.thinking, my form is good, I have been waiting for an opportunity to
:21:44. > :21:48.make a big breakthrough. She is rewarded with a personal best. We
:21:48. > :21:52.can even see her clapping her hands as she crosses the line. I was
:21:52. > :21:58.jumping up and down because it was such a bold performance today. It is
:21:58. > :22:03.a difficult job when you are substituting for the captain. But
:22:03. > :22:09.now I think she has really made it clear that she is a real contender
:22:09. > :22:12.in this event. She enjoys it, loves the experience of challenging Perri
:22:12. > :22:19.Shakes Drayton, and is happy to take her on all the time. A great
:22:19. > :22:27.performance. Those last three events from the
:22:27. > :22:33.women have been really strong. Eilidh Child takes 12 points. When
:22:33. > :22:36.you set out with such intense, you talk about rhythm, and I remember
:22:36. > :22:44.Perri Shakes Drayton in Eugene, she knew she was not going to run well,
:22:44. > :22:46.whereas today the only question was the home straight and the wind.
:22:46. > :22:50.watched her from the blocks, and she worked hard over the first two
:22:51. > :22:57.hurdles. There was no interruption whatsoever, which set it up
:22:57. > :23:07.wonderfully well. That must have filled her with confidence. She made
:23:07. > :23:12.a real decision alert -- early on. She is good on both legs. She has a
:23:12. > :23:16.mature, strong leg on her good side and her bad side. When you are
:23:16. > :23:25.running well, you end up with a performance like this. I am sure
:23:25. > :23:29.Malcolm Arnold will be happy. One thing is for sure. Shakes
:23:29. > :23:39.Drayton will have to be on form at the trials to hold off Eilidh Child.
:23:39. > :23:41.
:23:41. > :23:47.after a performance like that, and in not the best conditions. How
:23:47. > :23:51.delighted are you? Today was about performances. I
:23:51. > :23:57.thought, go out there and win the race and I might get a good time. I
:23:57. > :24:01.am over the moon. We saw an interview just before your
:24:01. > :24:07.race about how you wanted to put a marker down for the rest of Europe
:24:07. > :24:11.and the rest of the season. You have done that.
:24:11. > :24:15.I have felt that a good time has been in there. It has just been
:24:15. > :24:25.getting it right. Today has not been perfect. I wanted to drop the time a
:24:25. > :24:30.
:24:30. > :24:35.bit more. Come the world's, that is when it will come good.
:24:35. > :24:41.You look so controlled all the way around.
:24:41. > :24:51.If I can get good conditions, hopefully everything will come
:24:51. > :24:56.
:24:56. > :25:03.together and it will be even better. So, 12 more points for Eilidh Child.
:25:03. > :25:13.One of the performances of the day. The Russian took third place. Let's
:25:13. > :25:23.
:25:23. > :25:31.combine that altogether. There you can see the French runner gets into
:25:31. > :25:39.the six position. Another great event for Great Britain. JONATHAN
:25:39. > :25:44.EDWARDS: In terms of the overall standings, Russia are there. Great
:25:44. > :25:48.Britain are in fifth place with 101 Britain are in fifth place with 101
:25:48. > :25:58.points. Just 0.5 points behind France. Denise, you talked about
:25:58. > :25:58.
:25:58. > :26:04.Eilidh Child 's technique. You have to give her credit. She has
:26:04. > :26:09.plugged away, trying to improve the whole performance. To get the
:26:09. > :26:13.QuickTime is committed technique has to be sound over the hurdles. This
:26:13. > :26:19.is where Perri Shakes Drayton needs to brush up and take note because
:26:19. > :26:26.this girl is coming and coming hard. Dai Greene has struggled with the
:26:26. > :26:35.conditions. Four LE child, it almost had note impact at all. -- for any
:26:35. > :26:38.child. It has been a case of crafting and
:26:38. > :26:44.putting together the jigsaw, making sure everything comes together in
:26:44. > :26:48.the right fashion. For her, it is now. She can go into the best of the
:26:48. > :26:55.season thinking, I have ticked that box. Yes, the conditions are
:26:55. > :27:05.difficult, but this could be Moscow. You don't know. Hopefully maximum
:27:05. > :27:14.
:27:14. > :27:24.Looks relaxed. He is ready. Mo Farah is going for it! It is going to be a
:27:24. > :27:34.glorious, glorious win! He is going to make it two gold medals for Great
:27:34. > :27:37.
:27:37. > :27:46.Britain... Beautiful! STEVE CRAM: From one established star to one of
:27:46. > :27:53.the future. Charlie Grice, coached by Sally Gunnell 's husband. He
:27:53. > :28:03.trains up at St Mary's. What a day for him as well. He saw what Jessica
:28:03. > :28:08.
:28:08. > :28:16.Judd it. What can he do? It will all be about tactics. He is five times
:28:16. > :28:26.the German champion. No British athlete is anywhere near his time
:28:26. > :28:27.
:28:27. > :28:37.yet. But Charlie is on the up. He is just 19 years of age. 3.38, a big
:28:37. > :29:09.
:29:09. > :29:16.the best two has represented them in track. Charlie will be hoping the
:29:16. > :29:24.pace is not too slow. The Turkish athlete is away quickly. He is a
:29:24. > :29:33.former Kenyan who has only recently been given clearance to run. That
:29:34. > :29:43.was pushed through. Charlie realises there is a race on here. This is
:29:43. > :29:51.really quick. It is not the Diamond League, guys!
:29:51. > :30:01.This was unexpected. He has gone straight to the front and taken it
:30:01. > :30:05.
:30:05. > :30:15.hard. Only the Frenchman has gone with him.
:30:15. > :30:22.
:30:22. > :30:32.What on earth are they doing? The second group, they haven't gone fast
:30:32. > :30:34.
:30:34. > :30:44.enough. If the others went steady... If they just run sensibly,
:30:44. > :31:02.
:31:02. > :31:09.was a windy day! It's crazy. Already, he is paying for that. What
:31:09. > :31:16.he will find is that he is in no man's land, really exposed. He is
:31:16. > :31:26.sitting there, waiting for the chasing pack to reel in. They are
:31:26. > :31:46.
:31:46. > :31:56.is going on. He might not run 64 the last lap. But the others will not
:31:56. > :32:03.catch up. Charlie Grice has got himself in a very good position
:32:03. > :32:13.there. He needs to just make sure now he is running to win this second
:32:13. > :32:14.
:32:14. > :32:24.race. And the man in front is really starting to struggle. If they were
:32:24. > :32:34.just a little bit closer, they would have reeled him in. Charlie Grice
:32:34. > :32:46.
:32:46. > :32:56.has already run really well. Can you racer! Well done! Another good
:32:56. > :32:58.
:32:58. > :33:04.performance from him. Charlie Grice with a great second place there.
:33:04. > :33:10.These guys are finishing like a train. Good, tactical race from C.
:33:10. > :33:16.Goodspeed at the end. 11 points, really good performance. Excellent
:33:16. > :33:26.run from Charlie. He was just concentrating on holding of the
:33:26. > :33:52.
:33:52. > :33:57.coming up now. He would have been inspired. He wanted to show that the
:33:57. > :34:05.youngsters can go out and perform without fear. Well done, C. I don't
:34:05. > :34:15.think I have ever seen anyone win the European Championships with a 64
:34:15. > :34:34.
:34:34. > :34:44.himself in 2008. No failure so far for Tom. Very good jumping. Came in
:34:44. > :34:56.
:34:56. > :35:00.His second attempt and he plays it well. The only two athletes to have
:35:00. > :35:05.cleared this height. Not a particularly prodigious height, like
:35:05. > :35:09.you have got to beat what is put in front of you on the day, and so far,
:35:10. > :35:19.Tom Parsons is doing that. But the Italian has far more failures to his
:35:20. > :35:46.
:35:46. > :35:55.the German won it, the only athlete to go clear at that height. The
:35:55. > :36:05.Polish woman had difficulties. No points for Great Britain, however,
:36:05. > :36:13.
:36:13. > :36:19.and we will hear from Holly a little steeplechase. Scottish athletes who
:36:19. > :36:25.was replacing another one. McColgan was intending to run, but she picked
:36:25. > :36:33.up a little bit of a niggle. So Lenny stepping in. A tough race for
:36:33. > :36:38.her. This is a lead goal -- a level she has not really competed out yet.
:36:38. > :36:44.She will be very proud to be putting on the British vest and will be
:36:44. > :36:54.doing her best to get as many points as possible. But tough in these
:36:54. > :36:56.
:36:56. > :37:06.conditions today. Good athletes in here today. The German may well be
:37:06. > :37:16.
:37:16. > :37:22.at the minute. Not bad for Great Britain at the moment. 114 on day
:37:22. > :37:32.one, and close to Poland. We have to also watch out for the French as
:37:32. > :37:32.
:37:32. > :38:14.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:38:14. > :38:24.Spanish 19.35 last year. This is a late replacement here as well. She
:38:24. > :38:26.
:38:26. > :38:32.was originally going to do the 3000 flat. And there's the German. Bronze
:38:32. > :38:42.medallist in Helsinki before the Olympics last year. The Polish, at
:38:42. > :38:45.
:38:45. > :38:55.her best three or four years ago. Good athletes in here. But Lenny
:38:55. > :39:24.
:39:24. > :39:34.better than her predicted position. Anything better than ninth and she
:39:34. > :39:44.
:39:44. > :39:48.is above par. Slow start, Paula. Not surprising. We're looking here at
:39:48. > :39:54.the Ukrainian athlete, who has gone straight to the front. She is
:39:54. > :39:58.controlling the race had a fairly decent pace. Everyone else is pretty
:39:58. > :40:08.happy to slot in behind her and get a feel for things over the first
:40:08. > :40:13.couple of laps. Lenny is based in the US. She is born in Scotland, and
:40:13. > :40:19.soon, she will be heading to the Commonwealth Games. But she is based
:40:19. > :40:29.and trains in America. American trials taking place this weekend as
:40:29. > :40:31.
:40:31. > :40:41.well, incidentally. Sweltering conditions there. But not that
:40:41. > :40:51.today. The sun is out, which is good, but it is the wind that is
:40:51. > :40:57.
:40:58. > :41:01.causing a lot of the racist trouble. The -- races trouble. It has been
:41:01. > :41:11.the sprinters complaining about the wind. But you get behind you as much
:41:11. > :41:31.
:41:31. > :41:38.finish any higher than eighth place in this high jump competition, but
:41:38. > :41:43.as he steps up now to clear 2.28, he will get bigger points than that.
:41:43. > :41:48.And that is his first failure in the competition so far. Just on the
:41:48. > :41:56.other side of the stadium, getting ready for the long jump, one of two
:41:57. > :42:01.British Olympic champions. As we see his record, a couple of Olympic
:42:01. > :42:09.champions of the stadium: Mo Farah and there is the Olympic long jump
:42:09. > :42:19.champion, Greg Rutherford. We all hope the result will be a big 12
:42:19. > :42:20.
:42:20. > :42:30.points for Great Britain. In this steeplechase, the Russian is out in
:42:30. > :42:48.
:42:48. > :42:57.jump. He's got the longest jump in Europe this year. He jumps just
:42:57. > :43:02.before Greg Rutherford steps out. And there he is. His record this
:43:02. > :43:12.season has been fantastic. European indoor champion, second in the
:43:12. > :43:14.
:43:14. > :43:24.Diamond League in Shanghai. He is a real star of long jump. Not a great
:43:24. > :43:42.
:43:43. > :43:52.start for him, I don't think. A very Very powerful on take off. A very
:43:52. > :43:56.simple technique which rarely goes on. There you are, 7.90. Greg
:43:56. > :44:04.Rutherford, who was introduced to the crowd a little bit earlier on by
:44:04. > :44:11.the athletes. The announcer simply said, please welcome Olympic long
:44:11. > :44:15.jump champion, Greg Rutherford! And the stadium went crazy. He certainly
:44:15. > :44:21.has enjoyed his reign he has got as the Olympic champion, and whatever
:44:21. > :44:31.happens in his career, beyond last year, he will always have that
:44:31. > :44:36.
:44:36. > :44:41.Olympic gold medal. 7.90 the leading jump so far by the Russian. Does he
:44:41. > :44:51.get the flag? Yes, he does. He's in a far better position to judge
:44:51. > :44:58.
:44:58. > :45:05.whether it was a good jump or not. And way behind the board. A full 20
:45:05. > :45:10.centimetres he has lost there. Everybody has three jumps and then
:45:10. > :45:20.only the best four will go into that fourth round. There we are, second
:45:20. > :45:23.
:45:23. > :45:29.place. She attacked this early on, after
:45:29. > :45:37.the first lap. She has built up a huge lead. There is nothing anybody
:45:38. > :45:47.can do about this. The good news is that behind them, she has been
:45:48. > :45:51.
:45:51. > :45:54.picking them off one by one. The British athlete is in fifth place. A
:45:54. > :46:04.bit of a gap between herself and forth. She is coming into the home
:46:04. > :46:11.
:46:11. > :46:16.straight. The Russian is leading. Martine of Spain is in force.
:46:16. > :46:22.She has run a smart race. She took advantage of the fact that the
:46:22. > :46:26.leader had spread the field out and they were running full out. She has
:46:26. > :46:33.gradually picks of people who started a bit too fast. Looking
:46:34. > :46:39.ahead, she has got her work cut out. The German did go hard after
:46:39. > :46:49.the leader when she did make that break. She is maybe paying for it a
:46:49. > :46:51.
:46:51. > :46:58.bit. There is no doubt about the winner.
:46:58. > :47:08.She really has taken it to them. She ran 3.11 for the second filament.
:47:08. > :47:33.
:47:33. > :47:43.She never looked like slowing down them down. The British athlete is in
:47:43. > :47:45.
:47:45. > :47:51.fourth place. Behind her is the athlete from Belarus. She is maybe
:47:51. > :47:58.20 metres behind her. I think she is looking tired, but hopefully the
:47:58. > :48:03.crowd will get behind her. She is very much on her own. She is not
:48:03. > :48:13.going to close down on number four. She has two straight draw into the
:48:13. > :48:14.
:48:14. > :48:24.wind. -- to stay strong. Fifth place would obviously be
:48:24. > :48:26.
:48:27. > :48:36.better than sixth. The winner is clear. She takes maximum points for
:48:37. > :48:41.
:48:41. > :48:51.Russia. Ukraine get a loan, Germany get ten, and Spain will be clear. --
:48:51. > :48:52.
:48:52. > :49:02.Ukraine get 11. She has acquitted herself very well indeed. Better
:49:02. > :49:05.
:49:05. > :49:15.than predict it. She takes fifth place for Great Britain. Well done.
:49:15. > :49:18.
:49:18. > :49:27.Inside nine minutes in a tactical race like this. She did well. She
:49:27. > :49:32.didn't panic when the Russian broke it all up. She sat for a while and
:49:32. > :49:42.started to pick people up gradually. She realised that everybody she went
:49:42. > :49:45.
:49:46. > :49:55.past was another point. That is a very good run. That is a season 's
:49:56. > :50:04.
:50:04. > :50:10.rest. That is Paul Dickenson she was talking to. The women have done well
:50:10. > :50:16.indeed. Definitely. She needs to be proud of
:50:16. > :50:19.that. She came in and stepped in as a late replacement. But she came out
:50:19. > :50:27.with more points than expected of her. That is what we want from
:50:27. > :50:28.people today. The real disappointment was no
:50:28. > :50:36.points for Holly Bleasdale. She points for Holly Bleasdale. She
:50:36. > :50:41.spoke to Obviously it didn't go to plan. How
:50:41. > :50:47.did you approach it? I was really confident. I came back from America
:50:47. > :50:56.with if you need goals. I had some pain in my back. I had a good week
:50:56. > :51:01.of training leading up to this. I was really good for Roach. -- for
:51:01. > :51:06.the approach. My injury came back in the competition, which is upsetting.
:51:06. > :51:11.I need to focus on getting it right before the worlds. It is
:51:11. > :51:15.unfortunate, but I am fortunate to have the UK around me. They have
:51:16. > :51:21.been a great support since I came back from America, trying to get me
:51:21. > :51:29.fit. It is unfortunate that it happened here. I'm just sorry I
:51:29. > :51:37.couldn't do it. Was there any doubt in your mind whether you should take
:51:37. > :51:44.part? I had a really good session the other day. I was really up for
:51:44. > :51:49.this. Warming up, I felt a bit of something, but wanted not to pull
:51:49. > :51:53.out because I wanted to give it a chance to get some points. It was
:51:53. > :51:58.unfortunate that I was not pushing off my foot properly. It is
:51:58. > :52:05.upsetting. If it was any other meeting, I would be fine. At here,
:52:05. > :52:08.I'm just really gutted and sorry. I'm just really gutted and sorry.
:52:08. > :52:15.We appreciate you talking to us. Somebody who has looked good through

:52:26. > :52:28.
:52:28. > :52:38.best attempt so far. But he is elated -- hill in a two to. -- but
:52:38. > :52:47.
:52:47. > :52:57.he is eliminated. Tom Parsons the Russian. A really good run
:52:57. > :52:59.
:52:59. > :53:08.considering it was a slow first lap. In 11 points for Ukraine in second.
:53:08. > :53:12.Great Britain take eight points in fifth place.
:53:12. > :53:19.Greg Rutherford was disappointed with his first round jump. It was

:53:24. > :53:31.has been well over eight metres if you times this season. But we're
:53:31. > :53:38.waiting for him to take his next job. That is the team situation. For
:53:38. > :53:43.the first time, Great Britain and Northern Ireland are at 124 points,
:53:44. > :53:53.third place overall. Obviously, there is a long way to go. But there

:57:43. > :57:51.
:57:51. > :57:57.about balance. Cramer went off very fast indeed. She was committed. She
:57:57. > :58:03.went for it, but unfortunately she could not hang on. But it is the

:03:12. > :03:12.
:03:12. > :03:16.she has been doing, and the Spanish in last place at the moment, but
:03:16. > :03:22.Perri Shakes-Drayton is putting pressure on the Russian. The Russian

:24:32. > :24:37.he really did deliver on that last lap. But it gets serious next week
:24:37. > :24:44.and he will get a chance to test himself play against people he will
:24:44. > :24:52.be racing seriously in Moscow. A real effort when you are running
:24:52. > :24:57.that sort of speed, and this is into the wind. Very impressive.
:24:57. > :25:02.And you notice where Mo has gained in the last couple of years. There

:25:14. > :25:21.tighten up but he is holding his form, strong and stable.
:25:21. > :25:31.He almost forgot to do the Mobot. But that result will reverberate.

:26:10. > :26:15.a great prospect for Birmingham next Christina Obergfoll, of Germany,
:26:15. > :26:22.now. That is a poor start for the number one Germany in this women's
:26:22. > :26:27.competition. She is still in second place, behind the Spaniard. Always
:26:27. > :26:32.pretty solid. She has done well in the Diamond League this year, she
:26:32. > :26:37.won in New York, in Eugene, Rome. She has only competed four times
:26:37. > :26:47.this year and has won every single competition in which she has
:26:47. > :26:47.
:26:47. > :26:55.contested. She started with 55, that is 58.30, but she is still in second

:27:26. > :27:31.Absolutely! Which you could see the determination. Clearly, he had a

:28:00. > :28:07.for the British team, and he did it. A remarkable time, it you forget the
:28:07. > :28:14.calibre someone like Mo Farah has, it is amazing he has that range for
:28:14. > :28:18.his running. A great challenge for Birmingham. He

:28:29. > :28:32.Absolutely, and so much better than we saw in Eugene. -- won't he.
:28:32. > :28:39.He has rounded into the person we wanted, and I hope he can do the
:28:39. > :28:44.quick times this year. And what about Perri Shakes-Drayton?
:28:44. > :28:48.Supreme, magical, she has everything to go for this year and we want
:28:48. > :28:58.those QuickTime is converted for hurdles. Mac we will end this
:28:58. > :29:00.
:29:00. > :29:10.afternoon with the women's 400m row Thank you, it is a shame we have two
:29:10. > :29:11.
:29:11. > :29:18.races because I love head-to-head races. Those are the six teams with
:29:18. > :29:28.the slowest times. The British team goes in the next heat with Tiffany
:29:28. > :29:39.
:29:39. > :29:46.Porter, Isabel Lewis and Asha start by the Italian. But now she is
:29:46. > :29:51.running hard down towards the first changeover. The Italians had a bit
:29:51. > :29:56.of a problem, they handed over a bit late. The third runners are
:29:56. > :30:01.waiting, the Italians are in the lead. A lot of screaming and
:30:01. > :30:09.shouting. The Norwegians having all sorts of problems in the outside
:30:09. > :30:15.lane. Spain are coming on strong, Belarus on the inside. Not a great
:30:15. > :30:23.changeover for the Italians. The runner from Belarus is coming on
:30:23. > :30:29.strong, can they chased the Italians down? No, they cannot. The Italian
:30:29. > :30:39.just gets it on the line, but she was being pressured by the athlete

:30:39. > :31:22.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 51 seconds
:31:22. > :31:30.Italian team was strong, from the last lap. Wasn't always that aim to
:31:30. > :31:37.tear it up on the last lap? Yes, you try and win it, but it is important
:31:37. > :31:47.you work on your tactics. The me, I had a text earlier saying wait for
:31:47. > :31:47.
:31:47. > :31:54.the last lap, so I did. It was brilliant. I love racing at home and
:31:54. > :31:58.the crowd were amazing. You delivered great points for the team.
:31:58. > :32:03.It's important we get a good start this Saturday and finish off
:32:03. > :32:11.tomorrow with a win. I wanted to do my bit and that is why I came here.
:32:11. > :32:21.Quick word on tomorrow. You will be managing the Arsenal legend 's side.
:32:21. > :32:23.
:32:23. > :32:30.So many players. I'm really looking forward to it. My job is done today.
:32:30. > :32:33.A dream come true for you I know. am looking forward to getting the

:32:55. > :33:05.Well, it could be round about the eight metre mark, but he's not going
:33:05. > :33:13.
:33:13. > :33:16.to meet -- he's not going to beat the Russian or the Greek. A little
:33:16. > :33:22.bit disappointed with his performance this year. He's got all
:33:22. > :33:31.the support he could ever want. He does get eight metres, though, 8.02
:33:31. > :33:36.in the last round. Third place for Greg Rutherford. The German has won
:33:36. > :33:46.every contest this season, but still in second place. Has she nailed this
:33:46. > :33:47.
:33:47. > :33:57.one? It's over 60 metres. Very windy out there. That does affect the
:33:57. > :33:59.
:33:59. > :34:09.flight of the javelin. Consistently one of the world 's best. The only
:34:09. > :34:31.
:34:31. > :34:35.girl who can come up and challenge, ready for the second heat. Good to
:34:35. > :34:45.see Tiffany Porter leading off the relay here. Yes, really good for
:34:45. > :34:47.
:34:47. > :34:57.her. She will give the team a good set-up. What do you make of the rest
:34:57. > :35:00.
:35:00. > :35:07.of the line-up? At the moment, Laura is in supreme form. She has run a
:35:07. > :35:14.great run this year. She runs tomorrow as well. The team is good.
:35:14. > :35:20.The danger will come from Russia and Ukraine in race. It is about Heidi
:35:20. > :35:22.Batten changes, making sure everyone keeps composed. And in this wind, it
:35:22. > :35:32.will be difficult, so they have to make sure they are vocal and get
:35:32. > :35:33.
:35:34. > :35:38.themselves heard. Nice to see her out running and making the team. It
:35:38. > :35:48.is difficult and competitive, but she should run well. Let's see how
:35:48. > :36:07.
:36:08. > :36:17.start of the next race, but there is the line-up. Haven't they done well
:36:18. > :36:25.
:36:26. > :36:35.Russia, Germany and France, all big names you would expect to see in a
:36:36. > :36:38.
:36:38. > :36:45.seeded heat. If you look at the statistics, the last time our women
:36:45. > :36:52.won this round was 2011. If they get the bat around successfully, it
:36:52. > :37:02.would be a pretty decent performance from them. What do you think of
:37:02. > :37:02.
:37:02. > :37:05.putting Tiffany Porter on the first leg? I am a big fan of her. Always
:37:05. > :37:10.nice in this circumstance because you have the pressure of trying to
:37:10. > :37:15.lead the team often that focuses your attention sharply. Tiffany will
:37:15. > :37:23.want to prove something, that she deserves that place in that very
:37:23. > :37:29.first leg. There will be strong opposition coming from all of these
:37:30. > :37:38.teams. Ukraine, Poland, Great Britain, Russia, Germany and
:37:38. > :37:42.France. And the former European champion is on the French team on
:37:42. > :37:50.the straight second leg. But Tiffany Porter, former British record-holder
:37:50. > :37:58.for the 100 metre hurdles, she has been given the responsibility of
:37:58. > :38:08.starting off. Annabelle Lewis takes the third leg, and Asha Philip, she
:38:08. > :38:11.
:38:11. > :38:19.brings the Batten home. Really a tough one to the British team.
:38:19. > :38:28.Tiffany Porter starting well. She is chasing the Russian well. Russia,
:38:28. > :38:33.Germany and France are going well in the outside legs. Great Britain lost
:38:33. > :38:40.ground at the end of that first round and the changeover. The big
:38:40. > :38:49.three are away: Russia is being led by Germany, France are in with a
:38:49. > :38:56.shout as well. Asha Philip just taking the Batten before the end of
:38:56. > :39:03.the changeover zone. And what about Ukraine? They had a brilliant,
:39:03. > :39:07.penultimate leg. Ukraine came away with it, absolutely stormed away.
:39:08. > :39:13.excellent time also. I was watching the British team and it was about
:39:13. > :39:18.the changeovers. They were too safe. I can understand it's important to
:39:18. > :39:24.make sure you get the points. But there are -- but if they had taken
:39:24. > :39:31.more of a risk, their time would have been better. Have a look at the
:39:31. > :39:37.last leg. Have a look Asha Philip. She was very hesitant when she went
:39:37. > :39:42.out and had to look for the Batten before it got safely into her hand.
:39:42. > :39:49.Sometimes it gets very noisy. of people calling for the same
:39:49. > :39:56.instruction. But let's have a look here now. Tiffany Porter, setting
:39:56. > :40:06.off for Great Britain. You have got to keep the team in contention. This
:40:06. > :40:09.
:40:10. > :40:19.first changeover was a little bit hesitant. Again, a little bit too
:40:20. > :40:20.
:40:20. > :40:26.close. This is the type of thing you order allowed. You can only real the
:40:26. > :40:36.mechanism in this competition. Asha hit Philip, again very hesitant. --
:40:36. > :40:41.
:40:41. > :40:49.Asha Philip. I tell you what, Maria was the third leg run affirm the
:40:49. > :40:53.Ukraine, and she brought them from nowhere into the frame. Good result
:40:54. > :40:59.for the Ukrainians. Disappointing the British team. There is the
:40:59. > :41:09.result: Ukraine fastest time in Europe this year so far. Germany in
:41:09. > :41:21.
:41:21. > :41:31.second place, Russian and third, and are very good as well. What was it
:41:31. > :41:31.
:41:31. > :41:38.like for you to be part of the team? Good. We all worked well together.
:41:38. > :41:48.To see you on the first leg, will we see this more often? Hopefully. How
:41:48. > :41:50.
:41:50. > :41:57.much work are you putting in as a relay team? I think it's good. New
:41:57. > :42:02.faces as a team. We are all coming into the relay programme. Our coach
:42:02. > :42:12.has put it together for us. Hopefully, we will go forward from
:42:12. > :42:19.
:42:19. > :42:25.competition. The Russian, who has led since round one. He has seen
:42:25. > :42:34.Rutherford's challenge, and that is big. He has left his best till last
:42:34. > :42:37.by the looks of it: 8.33 he got in the second round. The Greek god
:42:37. > :42:47.8.12. And Greg Rutherford had to wait until the final round to get
:42:47. > :42:55.his best. But one has the Russian produced here? Big jumps right
:42:55. > :43:02.throughout. 8.36. Definitely the boiler. A big, big jump. And the
:43:02. > :43:10.last one of the competition. 12 points again. The Russians really
:43:10. > :43:13.going well in this team competition. The German, didn't really live up to
:43:13. > :43:23.expectations. Greg Rutherford, disappointed, I guess, but he
:43:23. > :43:24.
:43:24. > :43:29.produced his best in the last round. A fine, effort. Run fast, be
:43:29. > :43:39.balanced and powerful on takeoff and stay in the air for as long as
:43:39. > :43:40.
:43:40. > :43:50.possible. There is the final result of that long jump. One of Greece's
:43:50. > :43:51.
:43:51. > :43:57.best performances. And Greg Rutherford, third place, ten points.
:43:57. > :44:01.The match score is on its way. We've got sight of it here in the stadium.
:44:01. > :44:04.Quite an exciting first a performance so far. Still got a
:44:04. > :44:14.couple of events to come. But Russia, Germany and Great Britain,
:44:14. > :44:18.
:44:18. > :44:27.they are the big three. Colin Jackson is laughing. I am not sure
:44:27. > :44:37.what about! You have thrown the javelin. You have thrown the javelin
:44:37. > :44:37.
:44:37. > :44:47.60 metres, haven't you? Yes. I can give you some technical tips here if
:44:47. > :45:07.
:45:07. > :45:12.you want. I have never thrown crowd enjoyed seeing him here and

:45:36. > :45:42.A Gold medal does not always mean you get the deals.
:45:42. > :45:52.Back to the track for the final events of the day. Britain in the
:45:52. > :45:56.
:45:56. > :46:06.Relay team but as they lower down in the standings, they are in the first
:46:06. > :46:07.
:46:07. > :46:13.race. -- as they are. So watch for the Italians, led by the European
:46:13. > :46:23.indoor bronze medallist. A good first like for them. A clean
:46:23. > :46:23.
:46:23. > :46:30.changeover for Italy. Italy, another good change, they stretched their
:46:30. > :46:37.lead. They are showing why they are one of the better teams in Europe.
:46:37. > :46:44.They have got a safe changeover, it is all about the time now. Italy and

:47:01. > :47:06.the Italians here, they are an experienced team. A good start for
:47:06. > :47:13.them, good changes. The second and third was particularly good, maybe a

:47:47. > :47:54.athlete. He absolutely flew over. The best for Tom Parsons was 2.24.
:47:54. > :48:04.He did very well. So we can look back at the overall result. Ukraine
:48:04. > :48:07.
:48:07. > :48:15.taking maximum points. The same height as Hanany, but the Ukrainian
:48:15. > :48:25.had less errors. A great performance by Great Britain. We saw Rick
:48:25. > :48:30.
:48:30. > :48:34.Rutherford in the Long Jump, he got perform here today in front of a
:48:34. > :48:39.home crowd that give you such a good reception?
:48:39. > :48:44.It took me back to that Olympic night, an incredible crowd going
:48:44. > :48:49.wild. That instant rush of emotion again. You have to focus, deal with
:48:49. > :48:54.it, and get on, but sadly today, the performance was nowhere near where I
:48:54. > :49:00.wanted. Some issues put me back a bit, I hope that will get sorted
:49:01. > :49:06.over the next few weeks, Birmingham next week and Paris the week after.
:49:06. > :49:10.Peter Eriksson was talking about athletes like you taking part
:49:10. > :49:15.despite maybe not fitting in. It is about mosque you for an individual
:49:15. > :49:18.point of view but you want to compete as a team.
:49:18. > :49:23.I had long conversations with everybody and they wanted me here to
:49:23. > :49:27.put in a performance and get maximum points. It is great to talk to some
:49:27. > :49:31.of the youngsters and half the people here, I had no idea who they
:49:31. > :49:37.were, so many youngsters are doing fantastically and it is Williams to
:49:37. > :49:42.see. We get chance to shout as they go past, which is brilliant. It is
:49:42. > :49:45.important for the likes of me and Mo and others to support everybody here
:49:45. > :49:55.and hopefully put in good performances.
:49:55. > :49:59.
:49:59. > :50:03.Thank you for talking to us. We have great expectations on the
:50:03. > :50:10.first like for Adam Gemili. It is the first time I see him running
:50:10. > :50:18.today. He is reading out the team, he must
:50:18. > :50:22.be feeling good. -- leading. We talked about Richard Kilty been
:50:22. > :50:32.picked, perhaps it would have been good for Adam.
:50:32. > :50:36.Perhaps, but there was also another athlete.
:50:36. > :50:40.I think the coach was a bit disappointed with that. But if you
:50:40. > :50:46.look at the team, it you have to say that it is strong.
:50:46. > :50:55.The menu to get the baton round and make sure the changes are safe, but
:50:55. > :50:58.they look good -- the men need. Finishing strongly is important, we
:50:58. > :51:02.started we with Holly Bleasdale and Dai Greene, but we are back in
:51:02. > :51:08.third, which is where we were expected to finish, but these guys
:51:08. > :51:12.need to finish the job. I am sure they well, they have got
:51:12. > :51:19.every opportunity to bring the team home and finished the day strongly
:51:19. > :51:25.and to make sure it happens. -- finish. You cannot get into a habit
:51:25. > :51:30.of failing. It is a mindset, that has held them
:51:30. > :51:36.back. They have got it in their mind that this baton is like a bar of
:51:36. > :51:40.soap! They know that we think it and the
:51:40. > :51:46.British public are expecting it and they have to rise above that. They
:51:46. > :51:54.know they are quick and have trained well and they need to keep on with
:51:54. > :52:02.it, that is the challenge today. The French are the opposition, with
:52:02. > :52:07.Christophe Lemaitre included in the team. Sorry, we have the wrong stock
:52:07. > :52:12.list. The French are strong and I would
:52:12. > :52:17.look for them to come through. At the Great British team have a great

:52:27. > :52:31.
:52:31. > :52:38.--- but. sprinters in, but Dwain Chambers ran
:52:38. > :52:48.a good race last night. They will be down the back straight against
:52:48. > :53:07.
:53:07. > :53:13.Adam Jimmy Lee starts well and gets us off to a good start here. -16
:53:14. > :53:18.macro. Not a good changeover one Christophe
:53:18. > :53:24.Lemaitre. Great Britain having a good performance. James Ellington
:53:24. > :53:28.good on that bend, the French have got a lot to do, they are nowhere.
:53:28. > :53:36.Not a good change, but he has got it and he is away. And he is quicker
:53:36. > :53:44.than the rest, so a British win here. Close between Poland and
:53:44. > :53:50.Germany for second. And the quicker is time for Great Britain. That was
:53:50. > :53:57.good running. -- the quickest time. The French were nowhere, we got it
:53:57. > :54:02.right today. Good team, inform, confidence. I would not say they
:54:02. > :54:09.were the best changes, the guys got a bit on top of each other, so more
:54:09. > :54:13.to come. With those sorts of changes, they will think, we can go
:54:13. > :54:19.a bit quicker than that. Can you remember at the Olympic
:54:19. > :54:24.Games last year? They were unfortunately disqualified. This
:54:24. > :54:32.team is strong, we cannot forward to them having a successful World
:54:32. > :54:42.Championships this time around. -- we can look forward. Adam Jimmy Lee
:54:42. > :54:42.
:54:42. > :54:45.has won a race already this year. -- Gemili. This was the like I was
:54:45. > :54:55.anxious of because Christophe Lemaitre, of France, -- leg. Is in
:54:55. > :54:56.
:54:56. > :55:06.great form. But the change between Harry was good. -- he is in great
:55:06. > :55:12.
:55:12. > :55:19.form. In the lead, nice high knees. A wonderful finish.
:55:19. > :55:27.A good job and we will speak to them shortly. Mo Farah next to me,
:55:27. > :55:29.Britain's new 400 metre runner! No chance!
:55:29. > :55:34.They were impressed in the commentary box, what did you think
:55:34. > :55:38.of it? It was good, I have been working
:55:38. > :55:46.more towards space and tactics, so it was important to come away with
:55:46. > :55:49.something. I had a text message saying, go!
:55:49. > :55:52.It is not easy for you because she looked at the field and at one
:55:52. > :56:00.point, Steve was saying in commentary that you could have been
:56:00. > :56:03.in the mix, Paula! It is not easy, going into a race
:56:03. > :56:08.like that and two things were evident, one was how much you have
:56:08. > :56:13.worked on your speed when you are running at that pace and there was
:56:13. > :56:18.no rocking and rolling. You were really strong. The other is that
:56:18. > :56:22.when you are so far ahead of the rest, they let you do what you want
:56:22. > :56:26.and you could move up and down and they were just tracking queue,
:56:26. > :56:33.nobody was prepared to risk anything, to go out and run their
:56:33. > :56:40.race. -- you. That is not easy to handle.
:56:40. > :56:46.There was no easing off, you pushed all the way.
:56:46. > :56:54.It is quite easy -- it is quite windy, as well.
:56:54. > :57:03.It is Gateshead! Which almost got into the crouch position. -- at you
:57:03. > :57:09.almost got. Of you went. How much confidence does that go -- give you,
:57:09. > :57:15.going into Birmingham and Moscow? I have been working hard and doing
:57:15. > :57:18.great sessions. I am looking forward to it and it is important I keep
:57:18. > :57:28.winning graces. Birmingham is the Diamond League and it is a strong
:57:28. > :57:28.
:57:28. > :57:34.field. -- races. Brave to take him on in front of a
:57:34. > :57:38.home crowd? Watch this now! I love that! A brave decision to take on
:57:38. > :57:45.those big guys in Birmingham, you could have gone for an easier race,
:57:45. > :57:49.but no hiding. No hiding, and wanted to put in a
:57:49. > :57:55.good performance and it will be a good race to see what they are
:57:55. > :58:01.capable of before Moscow. Paula mentioned perhaps if you had
:58:01. > :58:06.not been double Olympic champion, you might have pulled out of Eugene,
:58:06. > :58:12.do you think that is if their comments, were you not quite ready?
:58:12. > :58:17.-- a fair comment. I said somebody else might have, but
:58:17. > :58:22.you did not, you wanted to go in, you wanted to race and you believed
:58:22. > :58:29.you could still do it and you came very close, it even though you knew
:58:29. > :58:35.you were below par, so that is a symptom of the level you are at.
:58:35. > :58:42.There were a lot of talks and I was not well, I raced in London and I
:58:42. > :58:50.said, I am still not right and I was pulled out by my coach. But I had to
:58:50. > :58:55.race because it is the biggest race for Nike. They are my sponsors. I
:58:55. > :59:03.thought I would finish in sixth or seventh. But I've played around with
:59:03. > :59:07.the race and you can dictate, as Paula said. So I said to myself, I
:59:07. > :59:15.have got more chance of winning the 500 now, so I went in for that. But
:59:15. > :59:19.I am in good shape, so it is good. And I felt all right today.
:59:20. > :59:23.We will look forward to that, and that will be on the BBC's. Phil
:59:23. > :59:33.Jones has been speaking to the Relay team after that brilliant
:59:33. > :59:35.
:59:35. > :59:42.start. We wanted to show it is a New Year,
:59:42. > :59:45.2013, we are fresh, we have new guys coming up and we can compete. I just
:59:45. > :59:54.did what I could and the rest is down to these guys and they smashed
:59:55. > :59:58.You put a lot of working as a team. This is important to us, we are
:59:58. > :00:02.looking to get a medal at the World Championships. The confidence of
:00:02. > :00:07.this team is so high, a new coach involved, and we are moving in the
:00:07. > :00:12.right direction. This is putting the first marker
:00:12. > :00:17.down, there is more to come. We are totally different now, we run
:00:17. > :00:23.in different orders -- we run in different orders. I am excited for
:00:23. > :00:27.the major championships. You brought the team home, you
:00:27. > :00:31.decided to concentrate on this and it was worth it.
:00:31. > :00:35.We have been training hard in Loughborough and this weekend was
:00:35. > :00:42.about getting a European lead and putting a mock out there as a strong
:00:42. > :00:47.contender for the Relay. -- mark. And thank you to the
:00:47. > :00:50.national lottery, because without their help, we could not afford the
:00:50. > :01:00.travel and stuff to these major championships.
:01:00. > :01:25.
:01:25. > :01:29.Mission accomplished, guys. this. We are a lot closer to both
:01:29. > :01:39.Russia and Germany then we thought we might be. Not a bad day overall
:01:39. > :01:46.
:01:46. > :01:51.of the day, but who would you pick? Personally, Jessica Judd. Running
:01:51. > :01:59.out there with no fear and a huge amount of guts. Down that home
:01:59. > :02:06.straight, she was digging deep. She would have come in here, wanting to
:02:06. > :02:10.go out there and run her race. 60 seconds and another 60 seconds. The
:02:10. > :02:20.others didn't run well in those conditions and she ran her own race
:02:20. > :02:21.
:02:21. > :02:28.and came away with a victory. the back of as well. Yes, and
:02:28. > :02:36.sometimes, you think, thank goodness I am free. She will have been
:02:36. > :02:46.putting a lot of energy into studying as well. A quick word from
:02:46. > :02:52.
:02:52. > :03:00.you, Denise. Both hurdlers did fantastically well. She stepped up
:03:00. > :03:10.remarkably well. Great job for the ladies. A couple of things coming up
:03:10. > :03:11.
:03:11. > :03:20.on BBC sport. Tonight, 7:30pm, Italy versus Brazil. Tomorrow, we're back
