:00:18. > :00:21.always been a trail blazing city. 100 years on from the Industrial
:00:21. > :00:26.Revolution it is all about the music. Now, Manchester's leading the
:00:27. > :00:31.way in a sporting revolution. The 2002 Commonwealth Games signalled a
:00:31. > :00:36.new era. Without them, it was said the London Olympic and Paralympic
:00:36. > :00:42.Games would never have happened. Since then, pretty much every major
:00:42. > :00:47.sporting event has been held here. Manchester is home to the multi-gold
:00:47. > :00:51.medal winning British cycling team. Today, it's running that's in the
:00:51. > :01:01.spotlight as 40,000 people of all abilities take to the streets. The
:01:01. > :01:07.
:01:07. > :01:09.city of industry, music and now Good morning to you and welcome to
:01:09. > :01:13.the Great Manchester Run. It is another beautiful morning here in
:01:13. > :01:17.the north-west. It is a mixed blessing. If you're one of the
:01:18. > :01:22.40,000 or so people on Oxford Street you're probably wishing it was a
:01:22. > :01:26.little cooler but if you're a supporter, you think it is about
:01:26. > :01:35.perfect. Over a quarter of a million people have taken part in this race
:01:35. > :01:40.since it first started in 2003. It is the largest UK 10K race. You've
:01:40. > :01:46.Olympic champions, world champions, top level world runners, stars of
:01:46. > :01:53.the small screen. People dressed in crazy outfits and heart warming and
:01:53. > :01:59.inspirational stories. Steve Cram, palm Dickenson and Denise Lewis and
:01:59. > :02:04.Paul Jones are out and about. I am ear here with David Ryan. Who are
:02:04. > :02:11.you running for and how much money are you trying to raise? Northern
:02:11. > :02:17.air hospital radioam I'm looking to raise about 1,000. David's story is
:02:17. > :02:24.one of thousands. Everyone running here has a special reason for doing
:02:24. > :02:30.so as I'll find out a little later. Good luck everyone. A among the
:02:30. > :02:35.thousands of runners are some famous faces from Emmerdale to Coronation
:02:35. > :02:38.Street, 5 live to life on Mars. I'll speak to some later up here on the
:02:38. > :02:42.speak to some later up here on the VIP bus.
:02:42. > :02:47.Lots more coming from Phil and Denise through the next couple of
:02:47. > :02:57.hours. I'll speak to Paula Radcliffe shortly. First, here's what's coming
:02:57. > :02:57.
:02:57. > :03:04.up this morning. Always high quality elite races. We've Haile
:03:04. > :03:08.Gebrselassie Hyland Tish annish dib abab. We've a special guest, former
:03:08. > :03:14.Bolton Wanderers Fabrice Muamba a year on from that shocking cardiac
:03:14. > :03:18.arrest he suffered whilst playing Spurs. There are more inspirational
:03:18. > :03:23.stories like Kirsty Howard who's raised millions for charity in the
:03:23. > :03:28.process of her run. We'll follow the progress of the tens of thousands of
:03:28. > :03:32.compet Triaz whether they are striving for a personal best or just
:03:32. > :03:37.looking to have a fun day out. There was quite a bit of sporting
:03:37. > :03:45.excitement on Deansgate yet as well. We'll look back on the best of the
:03:45. > :03:49.action from the great City Games. However fast or slow you are, the
:03:49. > :03:53.finishing line is always a welcome sight. We're head thering now to
:03:53. > :03:57.speak to Paula Radcliffe. 11 years ago now since you won gold in the
:03:57. > :04:02.Commonwealth Games. You must have happy memories? Very happy memories.
:04:02. > :04:08.It doesn't feel like 11 years ago. We were both on that night. Just so
:04:08. > :04:13.many special memories of the at MOT fear -- atmosphere in that stadium.
:04:14. > :04:20.The way the crowd God behind me. I wasn't fortunate enough to take part
:04:20. > :04:26.last year. Manchester is a very special place. Seb Coe said it,
:04:26. > :04:30.without the success of Manchester, we never would have had London?
:04:30. > :04:34.Manchester showed we could do it in this country. What a great show and
:04:34. > :04:39.how supportive the British public was of sporting events. What a great
:04:39. > :04:43.show it could be and really gave us the boost we could do it in London
:04:43. > :04:53.and we proved we could very well. Let's come on today and into the
:04:53. > :04:55.
:04:55. > :05:01.elite races. Until We say his best days are behind him, but he is still
:05:01. > :05:07.breaking records all the time. He just keeps getting faster and
:05:07. > :05:12.stronger. He slowed down a little bit, but he is coming back faster
:05:13. > :05:20.and faster. He also needs to watch the others in the race. It is going
:05:20. > :05:26.to be a tough race. Let's talk about the women's race, Tirunesh Dibaba,
:05:26. > :05:31.she is talking about stepping up for the marathon. She has already shown
:05:31. > :05:35.she can run very well on the roads, she has run a very fast 15
:05:35. > :05:40.kilometres on the ropes, she is keen to come here today and she looks
:05:40. > :05:46.really, really strong. She wanted to run London and was not able to get
:05:46. > :05:51.there because of that injury that flared up just before. She is fired
:05:51. > :05:57.up for a good track season and also wants to learn more about running on
:05:57. > :06:01.the roads. It is nice to see Helen back out here running, she won two
:06:01. > :06:07.macro years ago, it would be great to see her use it as a springboard
:06:07. > :06:15.for a very strong summer. It would be good to see her come out and run
:06:15. > :06:21.well. And of course Gemma Steel behind her. Thanks for the moment,
:06:21. > :06:30.let's take a look at what starts when the women's race starts
:06:30. > :06:34.shortly. In about half an hour it is the men's elite. Well, the first
:06:34. > :06:38.event of the day is the wheelchair race which started just before we
:06:38. > :06:47.came on air. An all British line-up and a favourite looks to be Simon
:06:47. > :06:51.Lawson, the defending champion here in Manchester. Jane Egan in the
:06:51. > :06:57.women's race looks to defend her title. It promises to be highly
:06:57. > :07:05.competitive. I will be catching up with the winner at the end. Sub
:07:05. > :07:10.recent Rumbold was here. He miraculously survived a cardiac
:07:10. > :07:13.arrest after his heart stopped beating. We will hear from him but
:07:13. > :07:21.for now Denise Lewis is on the front line with runners raising money for
:07:21. > :07:28.his charity. I am here with Phil Mason and some of the runners from
:07:28. > :07:33.the hearts and goals charity. Still, I know it is your first time
:07:33. > :07:37.running here, tell us a little bit about the charity and what its aims
:07:37. > :07:43.are. It is a partnership between Bolton Wanderers and North West
:07:43. > :07:49.ambulance. We are trying to put defibrillators into public places
:07:49. > :07:53.and to make people aware of this silent killer, 100,000 people die
:07:53. > :08:01.every year from sudden cardiac arrest. I was not aware of that
:08:01. > :08:05.until what happened. It is a major killer in this country. It is such
:08:05. > :08:12.an important part of what you are trying to raise here, bringing
:08:12. > :08:22.attention to what is a silent killer. Absolutely. When someone
:08:22. > :08:28.collapses it is a terrible thing. The good news is, he is alive, well
:08:28. > :08:34.and here today. We want to make sure other people have instant access to
:08:34. > :08:39.defibrillators. I wish you and the rest of the runners all the best. I
:08:39. > :08:49.hope you raise lots of money today. The elite runners are just behind
:08:49. > :08:56.
:08:56. > :09:00.me, Tirunesh Dibaba is just to my Ethiopian superstar Tirunesh
:09:01. > :09:05.Dibaba. Five-time world Cross country champion and three-time
:09:05. > :09:14.Olympic champion. She won the double at the Beijing Olympics, then we
:09:14. > :09:18.claimed her 10,000 crowd in London last year. Her closest challengers
:09:18. > :09:21.include two British athletes. Helen Clitheroe won the great Manchester
:09:21. > :09:27.run two macro years ago and has represented Great Britain at two
:09:27. > :09:33.Olympic Games. Gemma Steel was seventh in last year's half Marathon
:09:33. > :09:43.Championships. She has also won the European Cross country bronze in
:09:43. > :09:44.
:09:44. > :09:54.2011. Another athlete to watch out for is from Latvia. She has twice
:09:54. > :10:10.
:10:10. > :10:18.now. A great atmosphere down here, thousands watching at the top of
:10:18. > :10:25.Oxford Street. It is good morning to our commentary team. Hello to Paul
:10:25. > :10:32.Dickenson and Steve Cram. Good morning, everybody. The sun is
:10:32. > :10:40.shining down on all of the athletes. Helen Clitheroe, good to see her
:10:40. > :10:45.here. Gemma Steel looking for a good race, Susan Partridge will be
:10:45. > :10:49.representing Great Britain at the world Championships, Emma Pallant, a
:10:49. > :10:59.very talented youngster who has moved to the triathlon but is
:10:59. > :11:00.
:11:00. > :11:10.looking for a good performance. Perfect conditions best day of the
:11:10. > :11:14.
:11:14. > :11:20.year. Fabrice We'll be getting them under way shortly. I think all of us
:11:20. > :11:30.really excited to see how Tirunesh Dibaba is going to perform. I heard
:11:30. > :11:37.
:11:37. > :11:43.Paul talk about her earlier on, events these days. Getting
:11:43. > :11:47.introduced to all of the people. Susan will be going to Moscow. Only
:11:47. > :11:57.three women selected for the world Championships. She ran just inside
:11:57. > :12:02.the time in the London Marathon this year. Gemma Steel, a very talented
:12:02. > :12:11.athlete who has really come on in the last two macro years. She knows
:12:11. > :12:16.this course well, as indeed does Jelena Prokopcuka. I was like for a
:12:16. > :12:26.walk along the towpath yesterday and I saw her for -- preparing for this
:12:26. > :12:27.
:12:27. > :12:30.race today. Helen Clitheroe, she had a disappointing year last year after
:12:30. > :12:39.a brilliant 2011. She had intended to move up to the marathon in
:12:39. > :12:45.London, but after a bit of glue it curtailed her preparations. Her
:12:45. > :12:48.marathon debut was postponed until later in the year, as indeed was the
:12:48. > :12:58.debut of Tirunesh Dibaba. Perhaps the greatest distance runner on the
:12:58. > :13:08.track. Tirunesh Dibaba heads up this women's elite field. The course
:13:08. > :13:09.
:13:09. > :13:13.record, incidentally, also set by an Ethiopian. Fabrice Muamba Gets them
:13:13. > :13:22.under way. No pacemakers today, it will be all down to their own
:13:22. > :13:29.efforts. An opportunity for some quick times. A slight breeze, but
:13:29. > :13:39.almost perfect conditions. You hear some non-elite athletes talking
:13:39. > :13:54.
:13:54. > :13:58.about how hot it is. It is not that for whatever reason. The first six,
:13:58. > :14:08.700 metres, they just wind their way down behind where we are sitting in
:14:08. > :14:14.Deansgate. They basically had out towards Old Trafford and down to
:14:14. > :14:20.Salford quays, which is now the home of BBC sport. That tall building
:14:20. > :14:27.there, we are right in front of there. We are sitting right in front
:14:27. > :14:31.of the finish line. They take a left turn, you can probably see Old
:14:31. > :14:37.Trafford, there it is. Of course, it has been in the headlines for all
:14:37. > :14:47.sorts of reasons. Sir Alex Ferguson has finally drawn the curtain on a
:14:47. > :14:51.
:14:51. > :14:53.fantastic career. A fast course, really out and back. A course which
:14:54. > :15:01.certainly has the potential for a few of these athletes to go very
:15:01. > :15:11.quickly. Tirunesh Dibaba has tucked herself in nicely. Let's give Paula
:15:11. > :15:12.
:15:12. > :15:21.another go. Testing, one, two macro, three. I was saying, a beautiful day
:15:21. > :15:28.for running a marathon. It is. For these athletes out here now, perfect
:15:28. > :15:33.conditions. Not too warm, but a beautiful, sunny day to show off
:15:33. > :15:39.Manchester. At the moment it does not look like Tirunesh Dibaba is
:15:39. > :15:48.keen on pushing the pace too fast. Somebody called Paula Radcliffe has
:15:48. > :15:54.the best time ever recorded for ten K on the roads. I think anything low
:15:54. > :15:59.31 minutes, she would be happy with. I am curious as to where she is at
:15:59. > :16:06.right now. We know she had some problems with the mileage, we have
:16:06. > :16:10.always suspected it might be an issue for her. Of course, now she
:16:10. > :16:20.has a big track season ahead of her, she is may be caught between the two
:16:20. > :16:21.
:16:21. > :16:27.macro a little bit. Helen Clitheroe may be the same. She is going to run
:16:27. > :16:34.another race in New York. Let's here from Helen herself. It feels great
:16:34. > :16:41.this year, for me it is really about getting back into racing. Last year
:16:41. > :16:46.I was pulling out of races. I had to have quite a long period of time. It
:16:46. > :16:50.is about getting back into racing and getting that feeling again. I
:16:50. > :17:00.have no expectations about what I am going to do in this race, I just
:17:00. > :17:09.
:17:09. > :17:14.want to enjoy the experience and get back into racing mode again. It is
:17:14. > :17:19.difficult, Paula, when you've been such a good track athlete to make
:17:19. > :17:26.that mental transition, to think of yourself as a marathon runner, road
:17:26. > :17:32.racer. Oh, hang on, a bit of a trip there. Nasty fall, there. It is not
:17:32. > :17:36.Susan Partridge. She's still in the pack. Bib bib just took an advantage
:17:36. > :17:44.to get a bit of a lead and a jump on the field. It was pretty slow
:17:44. > :17:51.through the first kilometre. There was a tangle of feet and somebody
:17:51. > :17:56.went down. I think as soon as Tirunesh Dibaba moved to the front
:17:56. > :18:01.there was a change of positions. Let me have another look to see if I can
:18:01. > :18:06.work out who caused it. Let's go back to the wheelchair.
:18:06. > :18:10.wheelchairs have been going for a little over 20 minutes. Leveredles,
:18:10. > :18:16.Simon Lawson it is who comes into the home straight first well ahead
:18:16. > :18:22.of anybody. He has over a minute's lead. Victory number two in the
:18:22. > :18:32.Great Manchester Run for 30-year-old Simon Lawson, who's the defending
:18:32. > :18:32.
:18:32. > :18:42.champion. Started off tentatively as Stuart Bloor and Hogg took it on.
:18:42. > :18:47.But he's pulled away from everything. A fine victory.
:18:47. > :18:54.I think it was Christelle Daunay whopping went down. She was caught
:18:54. > :19:00.from behind. Straight up. You mentioned the pace wasn't that
:19:01. > :19:06.quick. Hopefully not too much damage done. Seems OK. A slow first
:19:06. > :19:13.kilometre. Tirunesh Dibaba decided enough was enough. She already has
:19:13. > :19:18.an eight or nine metre lead. A little surge. She looks like she
:19:18. > :19:24.means business. She looks like she's pushing on and making a hard, honest
:19:24. > :19:34.race for it. Heroin Terre preparations would have been a
:19:34. > :19:44.little perturbed. She's a little fragile in her lower legs. She's
:19:44. > :19:45.
:19:45. > :19:49.concentrating back on the track. Second place finisher in the
:19:49. > :19:57.wheelchair race, Phil hog. Simon Lawson, who eventually won this
:19:58. > :20:03.event pulled away. That's a victory for Lawson by well over a minute.
:20:03. > :20:08.Meanwhile, still heading away from the finish line Tirunesh Dibaba,
:20:08. > :20:12.second kilometre about five seconds quicker. All down to her. Gemma
:20:13. > :20:17.Steel leading the chasing group. Jelena Prokopcuk Clitheroe and
:20:17. > :20:27.Pallant all in there. Looks like already they will be settling for a
:20:27. > :20:33.battle for second place. So, 3: 15, 3: 09, six sect of seconds quicker.
:20:33. > :20:40.She put a lot of work in preparing for London. As you were saying,
:20:40. > :20:45.Paula, I think the suspicion is she may not, as talented as she is, the
:20:45. > :20:50.work required might be something her body's not just up to. Nothing wrong
:20:50. > :20:56.with her attitude. As you said, she's a little fragile or has been
:20:56. > :21:03.in the past. That's the thing about the marathon. You need to have the
:21:03. > :21:08.talent to run the distance but your body needs to about able to
:21:08. > :21:13.withstand the training. Tirunesh Dibaba has had trouble when she's
:21:13. > :21:17.tried to pick up the mileage and run on the road. Helen's slightly
:21:17. > :21:21.different. Helen's heart will always lie on the track in the shorter
:21:22. > :21:27.distances. She does have amazing range stretching from 1500 metres,
:21:27. > :21:32.she won the European Cup in Gateshead in 2000. Going all the way
:21:32. > :21:37.up to hopefully the marathon but definitely the half marathon. I
:21:37. > :21:41.think she ran a half in New Orleans and it didn't go as well as she
:21:41. > :21:45.would have hoped. She felt like the preparation wasn't there to go into
:21:45. > :21:50.London and she still wanted to run well and run well on the track this
:21:50. > :21:57.year. Of course, all of that discussions centres around Mo Farah
:21:57. > :22:00.to some extent. You can see the same thing. Not everybody has made the
:22:00. > :22:05.accepted transition up the distances. It is not as easy as
:22:05. > :22:10.everybody thinks it is. It is not just about ability. They have great
:22:10. > :22:15.ability. It is whether your body can stand up to the rigours of marathon
:22:15. > :22:20.training week in, week out, month in, month out. Tirunesh Dibaba doing
:22:20. > :22:25.what she does best over 10,000 metres. She's pulling away easily.
:22:25. > :22:32.The others had a little go to stay with her. Decided it wasn't the best
:22:32. > :22:40.tech particular. If you want to come second in this race you accept
:22:41. > :22:46.Tirunesh Dibaba's already the winner. That was 3K. It might have
:22:47. > :22:52.been quicker. Around about the three minute kilometre split. She's
:22:52. > :22:57.picking it up. She looks like she's running very easily and smoothly. It
:22:57. > :23:02.is very decentive. She's covering the ground pretty fast. The girls
:23:02. > :23:12.behind have decided they are in a different race and she's in her own
:23:12. > :23:16.
:23:16. > :23:24.personal time trial to see what she can do out there today. Yes, 3.3.
:23:25. > :23:33.She'd have to average 3.6 or 3.7. Big lead early on for Tirunesh
:23:33. > :23:39.Dibaba. I'm here on the VIP bus with Tina
:23:39. > :23:45.O'Brien, star of Coronation Street, Waterloo Road and Strictly Come
:23:45. > :23:49.Dancing. You're teaching as well as acting? Yes, I'm teaching drama to
:23:49. > :23:54.children which I love. This is a special occasion. You're a local
:23:54. > :24:02.girl. Running to raise funds for a local cause? The Manchester
:24:02. > :24:05.Children's Hospital. We're raising money for raising money to have a
:24:05. > :24:09.doctor a Clown Doctor in the hospital all the time so they can do
:24:09. > :24:13.things with the children, make balloons, make the children smile.
:24:13. > :24:18.Especially when they are going through such hard times. What kind
:24:18. > :24:23.of preparations do you put into today? Try to run a lot but I
:24:23. > :24:28.haven't run for the past few days so I'm nervous now. I think the
:24:28. > :24:32.adrenaline and crowd support will Keefe everyone going. You're nervous
:24:32. > :24:37.but when you start running and see the back of everyone's T-shirts and
:24:37. > :24:43.who they are running for, it makes you emotional. Proud to be from
:24:43. > :24:48.here? Very proud and to have such a beautiful day. Enjoy it. Good luck.
:24:48. > :24:52.Well done an raising money for a great cause. Thank you. I'm really
:24:52. > :24:58.excited. Great sights back at the start. They
:24:58. > :25:03.are all gathering waiting for their turn to get on to the streets here.
:25:03. > :25:09.But Tirunesh Dibaba has a clear road ahead of her and behind her. This is
:25:09. > :25:17.the chasing group. Gemma Steel, Jelena Prokopcuk on the far side.
:25:17. > :25:23.Helen Clitheroe closest to the camera. Katie Brough in the pack
:25:23. > :25:27.there. It is interesting, isn't it, athletes come in and want to run
:25:27. > :25:34.against the great athletes. Of course, what happens is as soon as
:25:34. > :25:39.she goes they are pretty much in their own race. As she is running
:25:39. > :25:43.past, I'm not sure how much of a football fan she is. Certainly
:25:43. > :25:47.plenty of the other Ethiopian and Kenyan runners follow the
:25:47. > :25:52.Premiership football a lot. Are big fans. A lot say, who's your
:25:52. > :25:59.favourite team and they go "Manchester united." ! Doesn't
:25:59. > :26:05.matter where you go in the world. Maybe Tirunesh Dibaba looking
:26:05. > :26:13.forward to running past Old Trafford. More likely she's looking
:26:13. > :26:19.for the 5km split. She seems pretty focussed out there. Making sure
:26:19. > :26:23.she's running the pace she wants to. We saw a slight incline and now
:26:23. > :26:31.there's a slight downhill. That's as much up and down as it gets. It is a
:26:31. > :26:41.pretty fast course. She's able to get her rhythm going. She's
:26:41. > :26:41.
:26:41. > :26:46.definitely through the 5k and pushing on to close in negative
:26:46. > :26:50.splits finishing comfortably inside that course record. Ahead of that
:26:50. > :26:56.pack, just watching further down the road, Katie Brough is dropping off
:26:56. > :27:04.that pack. A little surge from Jelena Prokopcuk. There she is.
:27:04. > :27:10.Jelena Prokopcuk and Gemma Steel, then Helen clothe rear. Katie Brough
:27:10. > :27:18.is falling off a little bit. There are no real hills here. A slight
:27:18. > :27:23.climb up to old faff Ford and then slightly downhill coming into
:27:23. > :27:27.Salford Quays. Really perfect conditions. Slight breeze out there
:27:27. > :27:32.but really nothing to speak of. Gemma, she's threatened to burst
:27:32. > :27:37.through. She's on the world cross-country team. Somebody who I'm
:27:37. > :27:43.sure has a lot of abilities. She's really come on a lot in the last few
:27:43. > :27:48.years. She's a very good athlete. She's very strong. Deceptively quick
:27:48. > :27:52.as well. I saw her up in the training camp last year training
:27:52. > :27:58.really well at the beginning of the year. She came down to this race, I
:27:59. > :28:02.think, and raced disappointingly. She was struggling to get over some
:28:02. > :28:07.post-viral fatigue all year. Didn't really get the year she wanted to
:28:07. > :28:11.last year. She has started to turn that round and is in pretty good
:28:11. > :28:16.shape. It will be interesting to see what she can do. She probably races
:28:16. > :28:26.best on the road when she doesn't have to put her head to split times.
:28:26. > :28:32.Just thinks about running hard and racing, basically. Coached by John
:28:32. > :28:40.Nuttall. A lot of the British athletes have come back from a stint
:28:40. > :28:45.abroad for training. Altitude training part of the British team's
:28:45. > :28:55.endurance programme. Used well over the last few years. Salford Quays
:28:55. > :28:56.
:28:56. > :29:04.area. A bit quiet on a Sunday morning. I hope there's some people
:29:04. > :29:10.working at the BBC there anyway! A lot of these city 10Ks are fast
:29:10. > :29:14.courses but they don't always go through well populated areas for
:29:14. > :29:20.obvious reasons. Sometimes it is a bit of a lonely trek for the
:29:20. > :29:28.athletes. Going well. Very well. Going well. Slowed down a
:29:28. > :29:32.little. She's probably on pace there. She is for about 31.20. She
:29:32. > :29:38.needs to pick it up a little in the second half if she wants to attack
:29:38. > :29:45.that course record. She seems to be just happy to cruise along. I'm not
:29:45. > :29:48.sure she's as focussed as she said she is on that time. She's out for a
:29:48. > :29:58.nice Sunday morning run. Then go back racing on the track with a bit
:29:58. > :30:03.
:30:03. > :30:08.of a strength trial-out today. Tirunesh Dibaba will have a pretty
:30:08. > :30:13.good track season ahead depending on where she decides to race. Her
:30:13. > :30:17.sister have already won the Diamond league five kilometres. It will be
:30:17. > :30:26.interesting to see when the arguments start in the family about
:30:26. > :30:29.who might be representing Ethiopia her little sister is fast improving.
:30:29. > :30:39.Gemma Steel pushing on with the second group but they are a long way
:30:39. > :30:46.
:30:46. > :30:52.has become a major event. We are in the 10th anniversary year, and over
:30:52. > :30:58.the years this city has taken the run into its heart. Today's event
:30:58. > :31:02.was tinged with sadness because this week Manchester lost one of its own.
:31:02. > :31:06.Drummer Lee Rigby lost his life in an act of violence which was so
:31:06. > :31:11.unprecedented it has brought the whole country together to mourn his
:31:11. > :31:17.loss. He was born in this city and live just down the road. He was
:31:17. > :31:27.actually supposed to be here this weekend, and now Manchester and all
:31:27. > :31:27.
:31:27. > :32:35.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 68 seconds
:32:35. > :32:40.watching will stand silent for one remembrance of Drummer Lee Rigby.
:32:40. > :32:44.But of course so many people have all sorts of stories why they are
:32:44. > :32:50.competing today, lots of people with personal tragedies raising millions
:32:50. > :32:57.of pounds for chat -- for charity. We will be telling you more of those
:32:57. > :33:05.stories later on. Tirunesh Dibaba, serenely progressing back towards
:33:05. > :33:09.those scenes. Back towards the city centre. As Paula was saying, not as
:33:09. > :33:16.quickly as we might have thought. Once you have that sort of lead,
:33:16. > :33:21.perhaps there will be bigger races in the future, so a nice performance
:33:21. > :33:28.today will give her a lot of confidence. At the moment she has
:33:28. > :33:33.got a big, big lead. So, we are about ready for the start of the
:33:33. > :33:42.maths race and of course the elite men's as part of that. A good field
:33:42. > :33:47.we have got here, headed up by Haile Gebrselassie. He is well loved here.
:33:47. > :33:55.Wilson Kipsang was favourite in the marathon last year, took the bronze
:33:55. > :33:58.medal in the end. And Moses Kipsiro from Uganda. Another man who is
:33:58. > :34:07.thinking of moving up to the marathon, they are all thinking of
:34:07. > :34:13.doing it. He ran about 23 kilometres in the Warsaw Marathon before
:34:13. > :34:18.dropping out, getting a little taste of what it is all about. Mo Farah
:34:18. > :34:25.will be running a ten kilometres in London tomorrow before his first big
:34:25. > :34:32.track appearance next week. Looking forward to that. Moses Kipsiro from
:34:32. > :34:39.Uganda, a brilliant commonwealth games contestant. Won the 5000 and
:34:39. > :34:44.10,000 in Delhi three years ago Wilson Kipsang looks so good.
:34:44. > :34:50.Certainly was the favourite going into the Olympics, did not run well
:34:50. > :34:56.on the day, was impetuous early on and paid for it later. He had a
:34:56. > :35:02.disappointing London Marathon this year. You cannot really use the word
:35:02. > :35:07.disappointment too much with Haile Gebrselassie, it has been one long
:35:07. > :35:14.career of success after success. A real beaming smile on his face. He
:35:14. > :35:22.is about 53 now, I think. It says 39 there. We are not quite sure exactly
:35:22. > :35:32.what his ages. Anyway, it is great to see him here. Around 40,000 will
:35:32. > :35:39.
:35:39. > :35:45.take part today in this great right through the morning, cannot
:35:45. > :35:49.fit them all on the roads at the same time. These privileged few of
:35:49. > :35:54.the 40,000 get to set everybody off and get a clear run ahead of them.
:35:54. > :36:04.After that it will be a clear, long procession as people enjoy their
:36:04. > :36:13.
:36:13. > :36:20.chance to take part in a fantastic the rafters, we had the city gains
:36:20. > :36:26.yesterday down at Deansgate. It was well supported and the sun has come
:36:26. > :36:31.out over the weekend. It has been a great weekend for athletics in
:36:31. > :36:37.Manchester and a great day to be setting out on this ten K. Look at
:36:37. > :36:44.all those people waiting their turn patiently. They will be released out
:36:44. > :36:54.on this route. Out to Old Trafford, into Salford, turn around and come
:36:54. > :36:55.
:36:55. > :37:02.back. And they head back past all of the thousands heading in the other
:37:02. > :37:08.direction. So, Fabrice Muamba is going to have a sore hand at the end
:37:08. > :37:13.of this if he keeps doing that. Rates to see him here. As you are
:37:13. > :37:20.probably aware, representatives from every single football club are
:37:20. > :37:27.running to raise money. Fabricius has become a real inspirational
:37:27. > :37:35.figure himself, of course. -- Mark Fabrice Muamba. Tirunesh Dibaba, how
:37:35. > :37:41.is she doing? She is still running very very smoothly. She is not
:37:41. > :37:50.focused too much on the time the lead at halfway was already 38
:37:50. > :37:57.seconds. She is probably looking ahead to what she has got coming up.
:37:57. > :38:07.She is not trying to go too far ahead. We are looking at Jelena
:38:07. > :38:18.
:38:18. > :38:26.predominantly marathon runners. Your lane has run a fast time, she has
:38:26. > :38:29.come back to run pretty fast in Japan in spring of this year.
:38:29. > :38:35.Tirunesh Dibaba is comfortable, I do not think she is focused on running
:38:35. > :38:45.too fast. She is still running at a fairly decent pace and she will
:38:45. > :38:49.
:38:49. > :38:55.certainly pick that up in the closing 2-macro kilometres. Christel
:38:55. > :38:59.tornado has recovered well, from that fall, she did not panic. She
:38:59. > :39:09.was well off that second group and has done a good job of picking them
:39:09. > :39:12.
:39:12. > :39:17.off. We are neither a minute behind Tirunesh Dibaba. The finish is
:39:17. > :39:25.slightly uphill, but really only slightly. If she turns on some of
:39:25. > :39:30.that remind pace that she has she could get close to that 31.7. She is
:39:30. > :39:40.well capable of running a sub three minute for a final kilometre.
:39:40. > :39:47.Especially as she turns into Deansgate and sees the crowd. As we
:39:47. > :39:53.look back we see Gemma Steel and Helen Clitheroe. Now we're going to
:39:53. > :40:03.slot into the men's race I think. will see to nicht above are going in
:40:03. > :40:12.
:40:12. > :40:17.side. And Moses Kipsiro leading them out a little bit at the moment. We
:40:17. > :40:22.keep talking about the great Haile Gebrselassie, but Wilson Kipsang is
:40:22. > :40:28.a great athlete. He had a really disappointing London Marathon. I
:40:28. > :40:34.knew he had had a few problems with his preparations, but he is a good
:40:34. > :40:41.runner, he is a good road racer as well. This will be quite
:40:41. > :40:50.interesting. Absolutely. Yesterday Haile Gebrselassie was talking about
:40:50. > :40:58.gunning for the Masters world over 40s. He ran in Switzerland last week
:40:58. > :41:01.and he ran fast. He is in good shape. But he says if he really goes
:41:01. > :41:11.for that time he puts himself in danger of being shot down in the
:41:11. > :41:21.
:41:21. > :41:31.Dibaba going in the opposite direction, leading that women's race
:41:31. > :41:34.
:41:34. > :41:40.by over a minute. She has not got far to go now. There she is, 800
:41:40. > :41:49.metres. If you look at the clock, she is aiming for 31.07. That is a
:41:49. > :41:54.possibility. That is definitely within her, she has picked it up.
:41:54. > :42:00.She has obviously had a little bit of an inkling and thought, I can run
:42:00. > :42:04.three minutes easily. Slightly uphill from the roundabout. She will
:42:04. > :42:14.come within sight of us very shortly, but I think this is on for
:42:14. > :42:19.the course record. I think so. You could see she was starting to use --
:42:19. > :42:25.lose a little bit of focus, there was no one there to push her along.
:42:25. > :42:31.But she can see the finish, she can work out times that she should be
:42:31. > :42:37.running and she is well capable of closing close to 2.20. We might see
:42:37. > :42:43.under 31 minutes here. Just easing off an enthusiastic supporter there,
:42:43. > :42:46.but he would not have lasted much longer at the pace she is going. She
:42:46. > :42:56.will come under the railway bridge and have a couple of hundred metres
:42:56. > :42:58.
:42:58. > :43:07.to go. Sensing the finish. She is moving very, very quickly indeed.
:43:07. > :43:11.Her personal best is 31.30, that is slow slow compared to what she can
:43:11. > :43:20.do on the track. Not many people have similar times on the road and
:43:20. > :43:25.the tracks. One last look behind, but this is how is easily.
:43:25. > :43:29.Absolutely, just looking to see if we can see her turning into
:43:29. > :43:37.Deansgate. She is really focused, you can see the determination on her
:43:37. > :43:41.face. She is looking up to see if she can see the clock. She is
:43:41. > :43:47.focused on getting that course record and will give everything in
:43:47. > :43:51.the closing stages. Just 100 metres to go for Tirunesh Dibaba, the
:43:51. > :43:56.Olympic champion stretching out again. Fastest in the world this
:43:56. > :44:04.year, and a new course record, winning in style, what a super
:44:04. > :44:11.finish. Very, very strong over the last couple of kilometres. Showing
:44:11. > :44:18.her class, showing her ability and showing why she is the world's best.
:44:18. > :44:23.No wonder you were looking at that. Very, very good indeed. We will get
:44:23. > :44:33.an official time, but it could be about eight I think. That is pretty
:44:33. > :44:37.
:44:37. > :44:44.impressive because it was the .15 in the first kilometre. I think she
:44:44. > :44:48.will be in and around what she wants. She has run not much over 15
:44:48. > :44:55.minutes for the last five kilometres and the qualification for the 5000
:44:55. > :45:01.metres for the World Championship this year is about 15.15. Here is
:45:01. > :45:06.our second placed athlete Jelena Prokopcuka. She has bounced back
:45:06. > :45:10.from that spring marathon to come back in good shape. She is probably
:45:10. > :45:17.not looking too much at a track season this year, she will be
:45:17. > :45:22.looking more towards a marathon. I think she has run here in Manchester
:45:22. > :45:28.2-macro or three times at least. But she has run strongly today.
:45:28. > :45:37.takes second place, and Christelle Daunay will be coming in in second
:45:37. > :45:46.place. She did not panic, a nice performance. A good performance from
:45:46. > :45:50.her very close to her personal best. Official times will be there later.
:45:50. > :45:59.Gemma Steel looked for a long time like she was going to do really
:45:59. > :46:09.well. She will be the first British athlete, will she get forth? Under a
:46:09. > :46:10.
:46:10. > :46:16.bit of pressure, just about have enough in the end. Helen Clitheroe,
:46:16. > :46:19.not quite what she would have expected after a good stint of
:46:19. > :46:26.training at altitude, well outside 33 minutes. I do not think she will
:46:26. > :46:31.be too happy with that. She was pacing in Shanghai last week, so
:46:31. > :46:37.maybe that is still in her legs a little bit. Hopefully it will not
:46:37. > :46:41.affect the rest of her season. women's race completed, the men is
:46:41. > :46:48.just getting warmed up. Haile Gebrselassie has decided he just
:46:48. > :46:54.wants to push it on a little bit. What a familiar sight that is as
:46:54. > :47:04.they stormed past Old Trafford. Closed for the summer, certainly as
:47:04. > :47:08.
:47:08. > :47:13.far as football is concerned. Most of them are off on their holidays.
:47:13. > :47:23.You can see Haile looking around at the other guys saying we need to
:47:23. > :47:36.
:47:36. > :47:46.pick this up a little bit and make sure the pace stays honest. Kipsiro,
:47:46. > :47:48.
:47:48. > :47:54.Kipsang then Stephen Mokoka. Let's hear from Haile Gebrselassie highly.
:47:54. > :48:01.When you come to Manchester, always you feel like you're here to do
:48:01. > :48:11.sport. Manchester is a sports city. Big clubs in the world here in
:48:11. > :48:12.
:48:12. > :48:17.Manchester. If you look at the city itself, people are running. Here in
:48:17. > :48:21.the BUPA Manchester run, people are running the whole day. Last year,
:48:22. > :48:31.after I finished all my race and everything, still people starting.
:48:32. > :48:36.
:48:36. > :48:45.Amazing. Ready as ever. The only split we can give you for sure three
:48:45. > :48:51.3K. That was 8: 28. Which isn't that fast but it is solid enough. Highly
:48:51. > :49:01.will -- hily will want to make sure he wins this. He has won in the past
:49:01. > :49:03.
:49:03. > :49:13.but the course record stands from 2007. Mo did training with Kogo for
:49:13. > :49:17.
:49:17. > :49:27.a while? I think he did.Haile leading them through in a good pace.
:49:27. > :49:29.
:49:29. > :49:33.Jonny Mellor dropped off that lead group. It is fantastic Lebed is
:49:33. > :49:40.still producing good performances. I can't call people old. They are way
:49:40. > :49:47.younger than me. It is getting the big thing. People carrying on.
:49:47. > :49:55.Haile, no reason he shouldn't if he can perform at this level. 14: 08
:49:55. > :50:02.through 5K. He's comfortably on pace to beat that world over-40 pace. It
:50:02. > :50:07.is held by Katerini from Portugal. He will be thinking about winning
:50:08. > :50:13.the race. Barring any disasters he knows he can beat that today. He
:50:13. > :50:19.needs to keep focus. I think we'll see negative splits. I think we'll
:50:19. > :50:29.see these guys really race now they are past halfway with a fast couple
:50:29. > :50:30.
:50:30. > :50:36.of closing kilometres. That group still tightly packed but Lebid
:50:36. > :50:41.struggling a bit. Will be interesting to see if Kipsang can
:50:41. > :50:48.challenge hi hi. He is a great athlete. Let's get his thoughts. See
:50:48. > :50:57.what he was expecting today. Very happy to be invited to this race. It
:50:57. > :51:04.is my fast time. To compete in Manchester. I think my training has
:51:04. > :51:10.been going very well. Now I can see the weather is good, with the strong
:51:10. > :51:20.guys and I hope tomorrow we are going to have a good race and my
:51:20. > :51:21.
:51:21. > :51:27.expectation is to run a good time. You know I was in Kenya with the
:51:27. > :51:33.British endurance squad back in January. I watched a track session
:51:33. > :51:37.which Wilson Kipsang was in. He had to be pointed out to me. They did
:51:37. > :51:41.about 15,000 metre reps. He wasn't in the front of the group. I
:51:41. > :51:47.remember thinking goodness me, at that point Wilson Kipsang is one of
:51:47. > :51:51.the fast fastest marathon runners ever, it shows you the talent and
:51:51. > :51:56.ability that was there. It was a tough workout in January. He was
:51:56. > :52:01.working really hard on that day. shows you the depth and strength
:52:01. > :52:05.they have in Kenya. Wilson Kipsang's strength lies on the road. He will
:52:05. > :52:10.have come away from London disappointed. He didn't really get
:52:10. > :52:13.involved in the almost suicidal early pace and ran his own pace but
:52:13. > :52:19.still didn't come through as strongly as he would have hoped. He
:52:20. > :52:25.looks like he's engaging a lot more today, out for a fast race and
:52:25. > :52:33.committing fully to this run. Kipsiro looks like he's starting to
:52:33. > :52:38.struggle a bit or watch a bit more how hie's running the race. Le Birks
:52:39. > :52:44.id has lost touch with the group but is still running strongly in fifth.
:52:44. > :52:49.I heard leading into London he had problems in training and he had
:52:49. > :52:54.missed a bit of work, Kipsang. You wouldn't commit if you were doubtful
:52:54. > :53:02.about your preparation. That was such a blistering early pace. Yes,
:53:02. > :53:06.he still ran 2: 07. But by the high standards being set it was a
:53:06. > :53:13.disappointing performance. He had his big chance in London. He was in
:53:13. > :53:18.good shape. I think he messed that up. Way to impet ewous early on. I

:56:24. > :56:30.lost the South African, Stephen Mokoka. We've Kipsang and Kipsiro
:56:30. > :56:39.still there. Kipsang looking like he's struggling a little. A pace put
:56:39. > :56:44.on. There's a rise as they come towards old -- Old Trafford. Kipsang
:56:44. > :56:50.looks like he's having to work to stay with these two. You saw the
:56:50. > :56:55.expression on his face change from the very smooth, in control, relaxed
:56:55. > :57:01.face earlier to a little frown. He's maybe just slotting in behind to get

:57:11. > :57:13.
:57:13. > :57:19.Kipsiro was looking like he was struggling, now for me, it's Kipsang
:57:19. > :57:25.Lebid in fifth place on his own. Suehiro Ishikawa, the Japanese
:57:26. > :57:34.athlete still leading the rest. He's a long way behind Lebid. He's
:57:34. > :57:40.working hard. He definitely look likes it. He always looks like he's
:57:40. > :57:45.really strained. He doesn't look comfortable at all. He's fooled me
:57:45. > :57:51.at times thinking he won't come through and he does. So, just about

:57:58. > :58:08.just having a little glance behind. That's never a good thing. There's
:58:08. > :58:08.
:58:08. > :58:17.the 8km split. 22: 26. Kipsiro's been in good form this year. Fourth

:58:29. > :58:35.Kipsiro does train out in Kenya quite a bit. Mo Farah has linked in

:58:39. > :58:44.will know each other pretty well. It will be interesting to see how early
:58:44. > :58:50.hi hi will wind this up a little bit. He's probably not as confident
:58:50. > :58:55.in his closing 100 metres finish as he would have been a few years back.
:58:55. > :59:01.Hi hi not looking distressed but that right arm there always starts

:59:21. > :59:26.want to three your books around, who knows. I suppose it is the way I
:59:26. > :59:34.would nod my head and it would get worse. He's still looking controlled
:59:34. > :59:41.and relaxed out there. He's cutting across Moses Kipsiro out there.
:59:41. > :59:45.Wilson Kipsang's rallying a little. Looked as though he was struggling
:59:45. > :59:53.but Wilson Kipsang may be anticipating the finish. We know
:59:53. > :59:59.Moses Kipsiro can finish quickly. Not sure whether Kipsang sprinting
:59:59. > :00:03.is there. Frankfurt was his break through a few years ago. Kipsang
:00:03. > :00:08.looking relaxed. Haile well aware of the danger. He's had this his own
:00:08. > :00:14.way on many occasions here in Manchester. He's won this on-Five-0
:00:14. > :00:21.cakeses. Will it be five in a row for Haile here? Can he hold off the
:00:21. > :00:27.challenge from these two? ? These two maybe expected Haile to have
:00:27. > :00:33.picked it up a bit more before this now and are wondering whether she
:00:33. > :00:37.should pick up the pace or keep in reserve anything which may happen in
:00:37. > :00:45.the finishing stages. But it is making your mind up time. They must
:00:45. > :00:51.be inside the last kilometre now. Just past 9km point. This bit Haile
:00:51. > :00:54.has an advantage. If you know how the finish pans out you know when to
:00:54. > :00:59.make your effort. Egg one of the others to make an effort and you can
:00:59. > :01:04.respond off that. He has an advantage here over Kipsang and
:01:04. > :01:09.Kipsiro. He's done it so many times before. This will be late. It is not
:01:09. > :01:12.a break them and come cruising in waving to the crowd. It will be a
:01:12. > :01:16.big effort over the last few hundred metres. As the crowds are gathering
:01:16. > :01:21.here, there are a lot of people here at the finish line now. They are
:01:21. > :01:26.being told what's happening. They are aware there are three men in
:01:26. > :01:30.contention here. They've less than half a mile to go. Cross the main
:01:30. > :01:35.road, cross the roundabout. Take a little left. From that point on they
:01:35. > :01:40.can... See the finish. Kipsang, Kipsiro and hi highly. It is a long
:01:40. > :01:44.run into the finish. Ken sang decided to push it on. Haile, just
:01:44. > :01:48.for the moment, struggling to go with that. A couple of years ago he
:01:48. > :01:53.would have covered that easily. He just doesn't have the same pop in
:01:53. > :01:57.his legs. He has a lot on his plate, a lot of different businesses
:01:57. > :02:03.running in Ethiopia. Typically his day is get his training done in the
:02:03. > :02:11.morning, then go into work. He told me yesterday he's opening up a
:02:11. > :02:14.coffee plantation. That he is -- that's his latest project. He's
:02:14. > :02:24.certainly not training at the level he was four or five or six years
:02:24. > :02:26.
:02:26. > :02:32.ago. The first expression does not change that much, he had given up
:02:32. > :02:40.the lead, he has given up the win. Unless he unleashes something
:02:40. > :02:44.brilliant, it is between Wilson Kipsang and Moses Kipsiro. As they
:02:44. > :02:54.come under the railway bridge we will be able to see them come into
:02:54. > :02:55.
:02:55. > :03:03.sight. This is going to turn into a big sprint finish. Wilson Kipsang,
:03:03. > :03:08.the marathon runner, has he got the pace? A sprint to the line. And now
:03:08. > :03:17.he starts to move away, Wilson Kipsang trying to respond to Moses
:03:17. > :03:22.Kipsiro, but he is not going to catch the Ugandan. The Ugandan wins
:03:22. > :03:32.the great Manchester run, and the great Haile Gebrselassie, for once,
:03:32. > :03:35.
:03:35. > :03:42.hast to take a lower position. A pretty good performance. The years
:03:42. > :03:47.catch up for everybody. I am not sure how proud he is to be the
:03:47. > :03:54.quickest man over the age of 40 at ten kilometres. In the end, just a
:03:54. > :03:59.little bit of pace lacking. focus now is more on coming to these
:03:59. > :04:05.races, having fun, running fast, but he is not committed to the same
:04:05. > :04:13.level of training he used to be. One thing he can definitely say is that
:04:13. > :04:19.he is over 40. His birthday was April the 18th, so he is 40. There
:04:19. > :04:23.is some discussion that he may be a little bit older than that. He is
:04:23. > :04:30.doing amazingly well, and he is pretty much committed to coming back
:04:30. > :04:40.next year as well. Well, it was not five in a row. He was beaten by two
:04:40. > :05:02.
:05:02. > :05:10.very good athletes. Moses Kipsiro runners. Johnny has done well to
:05:10. > :05:17.come before him. A must -- a much better performance from Wilson
:05:17. > :05:24.Kipsang. Athletes are coming in thick and fast now. Stephen
:05:24. > :05:31.Scullion, we have just seen finishing there. A good day to post
:05:31. > :05:37.sometimes. There were quite a lot of British men out there who will be
:05:37. > :05:47.hoping, the 30 minute mark has just gone. That is always a good
:05:47. > :05:50.
:05:50. > :05:57.benchmark, under 30 minutes. This is probably one of the best road races
:05:57. > :06:04.this country has ever seen over this distance. The runners will continue
:06:04. > :06:13.coming in here. James Walsh, left of the picture. I thought he might have

:27:30. > :27:38.Great job. Let he in come to you Haile. You couldn't keep up with
:27:38. > :27:44.those boys? Difficult. They follow me and in the last 2km they
:27:44. > :27:50.sprinted. This is normal. I cannot change the gear from second to

:28:10. > :28:18.I came back with something. A word about the atmosphere and crowd? It

:30:24. > :30:28.unfortunately. Helen? I've run a lot quicker on this course in the past.
:30:28. > :30:33.I'm quite pleased with my result. I've had a few niggles coming into

:30:54. > :31:00.New York. You're both off to New York. What follows for the rest of
:31:00. > :31:07.the summer season? I have to try and get on the track and get more speed.
:31:07. > :31:13.Maybe a few 5Ks on the track. Yeah. Hopefully. And for you, Helen?
:31:13. > :31:17.looking to do a couple of 5Ks in July. Then start marathon training
:31:17. > :31:23.in October. That's the plan for me this summer. Thank you and well

:31:28. > :31:37.Thank you. Thank you. Some fine running and pushing across
:31:37. > :31:42.the elite races but that's only part of the Manchester run. Kirsty
:31:42. > :31:47.carried the torch with David Beckham into the opening ceremony in the
:31:47. > :31:57.Commonwealth Games and has run in every Manchester run since wearing

:32:00. > :32:10.the number one. In that whole night, you suddenly became famous
:32:10. > :32:14.around the whole world. What was that like? It was amazing. It was a
:32:14. > :32:22.really good night, and I did not know David was going to be there
:32:22. > :32:28.until I got there. Kirsty is an amazing young lady and she has been
:32:28. > :32:33.part of the Francis house story. She was first filmed when she was six,
:32:33. > :32:39.sitting on the lawn. People did not think she was going to live very
:32:39. > :32:44.long, and that began the Kirsty appeal. And for many years it was
:32:44. > :32:52.about raising money to secure the future of Francis house. Since then
:32:53. > :32:56.she has been getting on with her own life, she has got her GCSEs, she has
:32:56. > :33:01.gone to college. She is on high levels of oxygen and in a

:33:09. > :33:14.one of many hospices around England and Wales, we provide respite
:33:14. > :33:19.support and end of life care to families who have children with
:33:19. > :33:28.life-threatening conditions. Medical interventions and advances in
:33:28. > :33:33.medical -- in medication mean that many of our young people are over
:33:33. > :33:39.the age of 16 and need the support we can give. We are hoping to open
:33:39. > :33:45.the building next door to double the size of our respite capacity, and
:33:45. > :33:52.improve our end of life support for young people. And do it in a more
:33:52. > :33:58.adult environment. It is to look after more teenagers so they have
:33:58. > :34:02.space away from young people. There are computers, you can do more stuff
:34:02. > :34:10.and watch films that you want to watch not watching what younger
:34:10. > :34:17.people want to watch. It is going well so far, we have raised 1.5
:34:17. > :34:25.million so far. We need to raise 3.6 million. She has taken part in every
:34:25. > :34:33.Great Manchester Run. What is it like for you at the start of the
:34:33. > :34:37.race? All of those people there cheering and supporting you? I feel
:34:37. > :34:46.excited, it is really good that all the supporters have turned out to
:34:46. > :34:53.see us. It is a really good day out and you get to see all the runners.
:34:53. > :35:01.I am here with Keely and Jonathan. How has the town been affected by
:35:01. > :35:06.the murder of Lee Rigby? It is a close community. The support from
:35:06. > :35:13.the hometown has been really good, floral tributes coming in, church
:35:13. > :35:20.services happening. It has been a real shock to the community, to be
:35:20. > :35:27.honest. He is in our thoughts today, definitely. In everybody's thoughts
:35:27. > :35:33.and minds. But you are actually not running for him, even though he is
:35:33. > :35:37.close to your heart. You are raising funds for a local school. Yes, we
:35:38. > :35:47.are running for our two Sun schools. But I am sure everyone running will
:35:47. > :35:52.be thinking of Lee Rigby. Yes, I think we would echo that. For many
:35:52. > :35:56.runners, the events of this week will be very much in their thoughts.
:35:56. > :36:01.So many charities out there who benefit to the tune of millions of
:36:01. > :36:09.pounds thanks to these running events. It has been one of the great
:36:09. > :36:15.stories over the last 15-20 years. Yes, they are personal challenges,
:36:15. > :36:21.but so much good is done by so many people taking part in such events.
:36:21. > :36:25.It all got under way earlier on, we saw Greg Rutherford joined on the
:36:25. > :36:31.starter's rostrum by Fabrice Muamba. He has been a tremendous
:36:31. > :36:35.inspiration to many of the runners today. Just over a year ago he was a
:36:35. > :36:45.seemingly fit and healthy premiership footballer, then one day
:36:45. > :36:49.
:36:49. > :36:51.fighting for his life after collapsing on the pitch. Fabrice
:36:51. > :37:01.Muamba is rushed to intensive care after the quarter-final against
:37:01. > :37:02.
:37:02. > :37:08.Spurs is suspended. Tonight he is described as seriously ill.
:37:08. > :37:17.emotional Fabrice Muamba returns to the Reebok Stadium seven weeks after
:37:17. > :37:22.suffering a cardiac arrest during which his heart stopped beating. One
:37:22. > :37:28.year later, he is in Manchester headlining a publicity event for the
:37:28. > :37:35.Great Manchester Run, and for his new campaign hearts and goals. It is
:37:35. > :37:43.a miracle he is here at all. It is difficult because you do not know
:37:43. > :37:51.exactly how to make an adjustment. Retiring from football so early. To
:37:51. > :37:57.me, it has been a challenge, but at the same time I embrace it. I think
:37:57. > :38:02.I have the power to speak about it because it happened to me. I know a
:38:02. > :38:09.lot of people have been affected by this issue. Hopefully we can find a
:38:09. > :38:14.way to resolve this problem. Sudden cardiac arrest is the UK's biggest
:38:14. > :38:19.killer. He is now an ambassador to and has set up hearts and goals to
:38:19. > :38:25.raise awareness of his condition and spread the word about an important
:38:25. > :38:30.piece of kit that could save lives. If you watch closely the video of
:38:30. > :38:40.what happened to me at White Hart Lane, one thing that helped me was a
:38:40. > :38:49.
:38:49. > :38:58.inspired over 100 people to run for him in the Great Manchester Run
:38:58. > :39:05.today. 92 of them are representing each of the Premier league clubs.
:39:05. > :39:10.I am an inspiration to you, thank you. But I see myself as just a guy,
:39:10. > :39:16.a guy who used to play football. Stopped playing football for health
:39:16. > :39:24.issues. One man taking part have been a constant source of support to
:39:24. > :39:30.him. What was incredible was to see somebody who was almost dead, to
:39:30. > :39:36.make the remarkable recovery that he did, then to take on this role and
:39:36. > :39:43.say, actually, this is an opportunity. I thought, I have never
:39:43. > :39:53.done a run before, it is a bit of a challenge. For a lot of people ten
:39:53. > :39:57.kilometres is easy, but for me it is a bit of an uphill struggle. I am
:39:58. > :40:03.very honoured and thankful that people would take time out of their
:40:03. > :40:11.busy schedule, come here and get together to run. I wish them all
:40:11. > :40:15.good luck. I am looking forward to seeing them. Thank you. You have had
:40:15. > :40:21.a busy morning, and you have had such a huge reception, what has it
:40:21. > :40:29.been like? The reception has been great, there has been a good turnout
:40:29. > :40:37.and the weather is great. Your charity, you have been such a great
:40:37. > :40:42.ambassador for it. We are trying to raise awareness. Today I have a good
:40:42. > :40:49.number of people running to raise money. Hopefully we will go out
:40:49. > :40:54.there and give it our best shot. must find it overwhelming. It is
:40:54. > :40:58.just over a year since the incident that changed your life. I am just
:40:58. > :41:05.grateful to be alive and to be able to share moments with my family and
:41:05. > :41:11.friends. You have to take it in and look at the bigger picture. I am
:41:11. > :41:15.here now and I am able to enjoy life. It has been great to see you,
:41:15. > :41:25.so many crowds, and hoping to raise a lot of money for the incredible
:41:25. > :41:29.
:41:29. > :41:32.charity. The charity alone, so many people die every single year.
:41:32. > :41:39.Hopefully we can make sure a defibrillator is available for as
:41:39. > :41:48.many people as possible. We want to put them in as many places as we
:41:48. > :41:52.can. It is great to see you. course, Fabrice Muamba was saved by
:41:53. > :42:00.the swift action of medical personnel. There are many of them
:42:00. > :42:05.here today looking after all of the runners. It is a warm day, lots of
:42:05. > :42:15.water are being taken on board. Particularly for those who have worn
:42:15. > :42:19.
:42:19. > :42:29.fancy dress costumes. Anyone wearing fancy dress today will be very, very
:42:29. > :42:32.
:42:32. > :42:39.hot indeed. Some people getting to start. You cannot get everyone on
:42:39. > :42:44.the roads at the same time, so people are given particular start
:42:44. > :42:54.times according to the numbers they are wearing. They are all wearing
:42:54. > :43:03.
:43:03. > :43:13.different coloured numbers. And it from Emmerdale. Phil got a chance to
:43:13. > :43:20.
:43:20. > :43:28.Run without the Emmerdale going. A whole swathe of them here on the VIP
:43:28. > :43:37.bus. Nice sunny weather, is that good for you? I do not know. I do
:43:37. > :43:46.not run very much. I am not used to this. We see you all the time in
:43:46. > :43:50.fancy dress, today the getup is, what? It is meant to be a monkey. It
:43:50. > :43:56.seemed a good idea when it was freezing cold this week, but not
:43:56. > :44:04.such a good idea to date. Nicola Wheeler, you have just come back
:44:04. > :44:13.from a set injury. Yes, this is my first run since then. I love
:44:13. > :44:21.Manchester, so it is great. Are you feeling OK, will you be all right?
:44:21. > :44:31.do not know, but it is for charity. She will get round easily, she will
:44:31. > :44:33.
:44:33. > :44:39.drag us all around. I thought you were a beaver. It looks very 70s.
:44:39. > :44:46.thought it was Russ Abbot. Whatever it is, you always enter into the
:44:46. > :44:52.spirit of it and you are running for a great cause. All the best. They
:44:52. > :44:57.have already been out there and completed their race. We are sitting
:44:57. > :45:01.at the finish line, they are streaming in front of us. I went for
:45:01. > :45:11.a little jolt yesterday, lovely weather. Paula, where would you be
:45:11. > :45:14.in this? For the first part, very slow then I tend to speed up a bit.
:45:14. > :45:21.After the surgery there was a little while when I thought I would not get
:45:21. > :45:27.back to running at all. It makes you appreciate it no matter how slow it
:45:27. > :45:36.is. I run for about one hour a day at the moment. You still did not
:45:36. > :45:39.answer the question. Faster than 50 minutes. You could have given people
:45:39. > :45:47.a great pleasure, people running faster than 50 minutes could have
:45:47. > :45:53.beaten you! It is nice just to take part and be able to get in amongst
:45:53. > :45:58.it. It is an important part of my life and I get enjoyment for it and
:45:58. > :46:06.that is as important as racing sometimes. -- I get enjoyment from
:46:06. > :46:10.it. It is great to see so many people I enjoying this event.
:46:10. > :46:15.Thankfully we have got some good weather today, it has been pretty
:46:15. > :46:25.horrid for the last few weeks. But the sun is shining today in
:46:25. > :46:42.
:46:42. > :46:47.Manchester. Manchester has really established itself as a great city
:46:47. > :46:52.of sport. Rather those Commonwealth Games. Paula will remember it well.
:46:52. > :46:58.2002, that opening ceremony with David beam ham. Seems so long ago.
:46:58. > :47:08.That was when it really all kicked off, this Great Manchester Run. It

:55:33. > :55:38.nice to see. It is this type of thing that the race is about. It is
:55:38. > :55:43.not about who crosses the line first and all that. It is about doing good
:55:43. > :55:46.and nice things for other people. That's the whole point of it.
:55:46. > :55:52.amazing to have people like Sean come and visit the hospital and our

:57:08. > :57:11.saw the Fabrice Muamba story and you're wearing the Bolton Wanderers

:57:24. > :57:29.support for Fabrice Muamba. It show you can do anything if you put your

:57:37. > :57:43.it give me the energy to carry on. Seeing him start the race? He's our
:57:43. > :57:48.hero. Amazing. All the people who've come out today respect him and
:57:48. > :57:57.showed him that passion. You have played a great part in this today.

:59:04. > :59:11.Steve, you didn't make much of an effort. Hello. We're on air.
:59:11. > :59:16.listen togs Rob Walker talking about us. I'm saying Paula's looking
:59:16. > :59:21.glamorous and you... I'm going training after this. I would suggest
:59:22. > :59:27.that I could probably go to the start line and run and get quicker
:59:27. > :59:31.and I'm tressed for it. She looks better than me! She certainly does.
:59:31. > :59:35.Beautiful day here. Not quite such a beautiful day yesterday in New York
:59:35. > :59:43.for the Diamond League. Not what you'd combpt for this time of year
:59:43. > :59:48.in New York. That mete has had bad weather forthe past couple of years.
:59:48. > :59:53.It was cold, windy and wet. There were one or two good performances
:59:53. > :59:58.There were not that many British athletes there. You almost feel
:59:58. > :00:01.sorry for New York. It is a great city. But it has the worst of the
:00:01. > :00:11.Diamond League meetings unfortunately. The weather didn't
:00:11. > :00:15.
:00:15. > :00:19.help yesterday. You mentioned Andhra ya, we saw how fast Monsho ran.
:00:19. > :00:28.ran really fast in those conditions. She's going to be a force to be
:00:28. > :00:33.reckoned with going into Moscow. trip triple jumpers couldn't even
:00:33. > :00:41.make 16-and-a-half metres it was that windy. Christine attacked the
:00:41. > :00:45.200. She's in lane six going backwards in the home straight.
:00:45. > :00:50.Montu is one to beat this year. Interesting to see the way
:00:50. > :00:54.Christine's approaching this season. She wants to get in the mix more?
:00:54. > :00:58.Typically she'd come out later in the season and build slowly towards
:00:58. > :01:01.a peak at the championships. She's trying to force herself to change
:01:01. > :01:06.the way she runs races to commit a bit more in the first half of the
:01:06. > :01:15.race. Unfortunately, the conditions there meant she paid the price for
:01:15. > :01:20.combating. Hopefully that won't put her off trying it in other races.
:01:20. > :01:24.She's not fit. If you're 100% fit to go into a race like that which the
:01:24. > :01:30.weather conditions were tough as well. It was not something she
:01:30. > :01:38.fancied. Siddo ewe didn't start either. Holly Bleasdale didn't
:01:38. > :01:48.perform all that well. A real mixed bag of a day. Men's 5,000 was
:01:48. > :01:54.
:01:54. > :02:02.interested. There's a new Ethiopian talent threatening mow Faro. He was
:02:02. > :02:09.a class a-- mow Faro -- Mo Farah. He ran a brilliant 3,000 metres in
:02:09. > :02:15.Doha. It was an impressive run. Different conditions. They only ran
:02:15. > :02:22.13: 10. He did most of it on his own. As the season progress he is
:02:22. > :02:28.we'll see Mo in Eugene next week. This will be the guy to beat.
:02:28. > :02:33.think mmm o will be watching him with a fluttering heart? He will.
:02:33. > :02:36.Trying to get a gauge for how he will race. How he will go up gents
:02:36. > :02:46.him. He tends to finish the races
:02:46. > :02:48.
:02:48. > :02:53.strongly like Mo does. He needs to think about his tactics. I do not
:02:53. > :03:01.think he has made his mind up yet. I think he is going in with both
:03:01. > :03:09.options, but his first focus will be the 10,000 metres. Let's look at the
:03:10. > :03:15.men's 800 metres. Andrew had a pretty good start, he had been in
:03:15. > :03:21.trouble this year with one or two injury problems. I am not sure he
:03:21. > :03:26.was expecting much from his first couple of races. It was good to come
:03:26. > :03:35.second, it was a better race for him. Andrew is getting good at
:03:35. > :03:40.racing people. It is, can you get through the round, get to the final,
:03:40. > :03:48.as he did last year, and then be competitive in the final. I think
:03:48. > :03:51.his season will get better as it progresses. One of the big news
:03:51. > :03:56.stories in British athletics has been the resignation of Peter
:03:56. > :03:59.Eriksson and Neil Black will be taking the British team to Moscow.
:03:59. > :04:07.What did you make of that, British athletics have been losing people
:04:07. > :04:12.pretty fast. For me, it was surprising. Peter Eriksson has been
:04:12. > :04:21.in this country for 4-macro or five years. To leave the country and take
:04:21. > :04:24.the job, something is just not right. In that respect it is a
:04:24. > :04:29.little bit disappointing, it does leave the team a little bit stuck
:04:29. > :04:35.and a little bit looking around and not knowing who to look to going
:04:35. > :04:42.into Moscow. He seemed to bring a real cam, reassuring presence to
:04:42. > :04:45.British athletics. Very different to Charles. But when we saw him in
:04:45. > :04:54.Gothenberg, there was something which resonated with all of the
:04:54. > :04:59.athletes. He did a fantastic job with the Paralympic team. The
:04:59. > :05:03.Paralympic athletes knew him well, once the rest of the team got to
:05:03. > :05:09.know him they realised, he is a very different character. Someone who is
:05:09. > :05:13.very personable. It will be difficult at this stage to find a
:05:13. > :05:22.quick replacement. I think they should wait, do not find a quick
:05:22. > :05:29.replacement. Take a bit of time to find a new head coach. Thank you for
:05:29. > :05:39.the moment. Steve, get on with your run, you are looking very fit.
:05:39. > :05:44.
:05:44. > :05:50.tragically lost their daughter last December. Mum Rebecca, tell us why
:05:50. > :05:55.you set up the charity. We set up the charity to remember our darling
:05:55. > :06:04.daughter. We want to make up their children smile like our daughter
:06:04. > :06:08.did. We are here with 200 of our friends and family. Another 70 from
:06:08. > :06:13.around the world are swimming and cycling to raise money in her name.
:06:13. > :06:19.We will be looking out for these pink T-shirts everywhere. And you
:06:19. > :06:25.have a picture of your daughter on your back. A beautiful little girl.
:06:25. > :06:31.She really was. Her sister is here as well. We are going to keep
:06:31. > :06:39.raising money and working hard, but we miss her terribly. What is your
:06:39. > :06:48.target figure, and how much are you hoping to raise? 50,000 today, keep
:06:48. > :06:51.them coming. We have raised 50,000 as of today and we are giving the
:06:51. > :06:54.money to the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital to support clown
:06:54. > :07:01.doctors going around the wards distracting children when they are
:07:01. > :07:08.having treatment. You have pink T-shirts here today but you have
:07:08. > :07:15.people running all over the world. London, New York, Jerusalem and
:07:15. > :07:22.South Africa. I hope you raise so much money for such a worthy cause.
:07:22. > :07:27.Thank you so much for talking to us. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome

:07:43. > :07:51.
:07:51. > :07:58.competing in this epic ten K. It is tie, how do you feel? A bit of a
:07:58. > :08:05.Muppet. I was going to wear the full snooker outfit, but my friends told
:08:05. > :08:11.me that was not a good idea. Snooker players are perhaps not renowned for

:08:18. > :08:23.anything like this, but I had to pull out because I injured my foot.
:08:23. > :08:29.It will not be the last time I do something like this, I loved it. I
:08:29. > :08:34.am doing it for the Royal man to children is charity, I am a patron
:08:34. > :08:38.and it is a charity very close to my own heart. Through the season I
:08:38. > :08:46.support them through a snigger prospective with 100 for every
:08:46. > :08:53.century break that I make. We saw earlier that you had a banner, I
:08:53. > :08:57.think we have it. The children made this for you. It is so nice. We
:08:57. > :09:02.donated a snooker table to the play area. I went in and some of the
:09:02. > :09:06.children had made me cards and this banner as well. This is what it is
:09:06. > :09:13.all about. Are you hoping this will help your snooker, the fitness
:09:13. > :09:22.element? Fitness has become more important, we are an eye up to 30
:09:22. > :09:27.events pro season. -- we are now up. The top players are also the
:09:27. > :09:30.fittest, and I am probably the only one who lets the side down.
:09:30. > :09:40.could take the Ronnie O'Sullivan route and just do one tournament a

:09:40. > :09:43.year. It works for him! Unbelievable what he did. To not compete for one

:09:53. > :09:57.
:09:57. > :10:07.I can tell you the entries for next year's race have already been

:10:39. > :10:43.ago today I should have been doing this run but I was waiting for a

:11:16. > :11:21.How many strange sights have you seen out there? I saw two dies

:12:25. > :12:30.assemblies. I love being in that school. He wants the best for all
:12:30. > :12:40.our children. He goes around the classes, listens to children
:12:40. > :12:42.
:12:42. > :12:46.reading. They run up to him, hug him. The Times in 2004 said this was
:12:46. > :12:52.the worst place in Britain to live, but lots of us who live here
:12:52. > :13:02.disagree. We love living here, it is a great community, great community
:13:02. > :13:02.
:13:02. > :13:09.spirit. Lots of great people. I am running in my school clerical gear,
:13:09. > :13:14.I am not one who is often seen in my clerical gear in this community.
:13:14. > :13:17.Jeans and a sweatshirt is probably more appropriate in this community.
:13:17. > :13:22.On Monday I was in school assembly showing the pupils what I was going
:13:23. > :13:29.to be running in. Some of them are hoping for rain, some were hoping it
:13:29. > :13:34.would be warm, am just hoping I would get back in one piece. I
:13:34. > :13:39.really enjoy exercise because it helps me to keep fit and to sleep.
:13:39. > :13:43.The more exercise you do, the more tired you are and it helps when you
:13:43. > :13:48.go to bed. A number of children over the past few days have been
:13:48. > :13:54.fundraising. Today was fitness Thursday when they came in in their
:13:54. > :14:03.PE kits. They just tried to raise that profile of fitness in their
:14:03. > :14:08.daily lives. We are going to use the money for some outdoor equipment for
:14:08. > :14:14.our 3-5 -year-olds, this will enrich their time at this school and give
:14:14. > :14:19.them a school, learning environment to work in. One of the reasons I am
:14:19. > :14:24.doing the Great Manchester Run is to continue my weight loss. Three years
:14:24. > :14:30.ago I was over 26 stone. At that point I really needed to do
:14:30. > :14:35.something about it. Fortunately the medical treatment available I took,
:14:35. > :14:43.which was a gastric bypass, and I continue to work on my weight loss
:14:43. > :14:47.and my restriction of food. But also my exercise as well. On Sunday
:14:47. > :14:55.morning I am leading morning prayer, and within that we have a
:14:55. > :14:59.baptism of a young child. I will be doing that, doing my church service,
:14:59. > :15:04.fulfilling the baptism requirements, welcoming this young life into the
:15:04. > :15:14.Church of England. Then very quickly I will get change, have a car
:15:14. > :15:17.
:15:17. > :15:22.outside to transport me straight used to get hot just being in the
:15:22. > :15:26.church, so goodness knows how he will feel running in the sunshine.
:15:26. > :15:36.It was also very hot yesterday for the great City Games and I am joined
:15:36. > :15:37.
:15:37. > :15:42.by two of the stars. Before we look back to yesterday, Greg, we are next
:15:42. > :15:48.to a sprinter. Your comments about beating sprinters, tell us about
:15:48. > :15:55.that. The other day I said I wanted to try a couple of hundred metres
:15:55. > :16:02.this year. I feel as if I could run a bit quicker. I got quoted saying I
:16:02. > :16:07.would be the next best thing in sprinting which is not true at all.
:16:07. > :16:10.I would not claim I can beat people like this. But I think there are a
:16:10. > :16:17.few people out there who do Sprint who I think I might have a chance
:16:17. > :16:27.against. There have been some great sprinter long jumps. Yes, there
:16:27. > :16:28.
:16:28. > :16:34.have. It can be done, and it has been done. Especially in the relay.
:16:34. > :16:40.You have just got to be careful what you say. You won comfortably
:16:40. > :16:47.yesterday, a bit disappointment that -- a bit disappointed you did not
:16:47. > :16:51.get over eight metres? Yes. I was really keen to get over eight metres
:16:51. > :16:57.and give the crowd something special. Altogether the competition
:16:57. > :17:03.was great. By the time we got to the final round I was a little bit tired
:17:03. > :17:09.because the rounds were so quick. It was a pretty good day out. I want to
:17:09. > :17:16.jump eight metres every time, but it does not always happen like that.
:17:17. > :17:23.Technically, how are you at the moment? Yesterday did not look too
:17:23. > :17:27.hot to be totally honest. Changes take a long time, things have been a
:17:27. > :17:34.bit disjointed for me this year already. We worked on a few things,
:17:34. > :17:39.the problem is, going back in a full run in a competition situation you
:17:39. > :17:48.want to perform as well as you can. Often you revert to how you used to
:17:48. > :17:56.jump. I think over the coming year things will change more. Let's come
:17:56. > :18:00.to your 100 metres Kim. You beat the young boys? Yes, you always want to
:18:00. > :18:05.be dominant in the sprinting. Everybody wants to come and win
:18:05. > :18:09.regardless of age. For me, it is great to be able to carry on.
:18:09. > :18:17.your view now in terms of the rest of your career? Are you taking it a
:18:17. > :18:27.race at a time a year at a time? have to take it one race and one
:18:27. > :18:27.
:18:27. > :18:36.year at a time. I really can't go to far. If I set a long-term goal it
:18:36. > :18:43.will be Rio at 40, six Olympics and I really will have to call it a day.
:18:43. > :18:48.You will be like merlin Otti. Keeping going and going. I'll look
:18:48. > :18:58.at coaching. It is my time to go and coach. That's something I'm
:18:58. > :19:03.
:19:03. > :19:08.considering. Let's look at other events that caught the eye Merry is
:19:08. > :19:16.one of the great athletes we have at the moment. She'll become one of the
:19:16. > :19:26.best Hurd letters we've ever had. She is a dominant force. We could
:19:26. > :19:32.
:19:32. > :19:37.see good medals coming out of her. Next to her is Perri. It is not as
:19:37. > :19:43.easy as her running and jumping over hurdles. Technically she has to get
:19:44. > :19:48.it right her flat speed hats to be up there. She's run a sub-51. She's
:19:48. > :19:53.getting there. Could be an ex-seating year for her. One of the
:19:53. > :20:02.star names was Alison Felix. She won three gold medals in London. You're
:20:02. > :20:09.a great admirer of her, Kim. She looks in great form? He her power to
:20:09. > :20:14.force ratio is great. She is slim. But she has a lot more to come.
:20:14. > :20:19.She's not dissimilar to you. She's very slight. You see some of the
:20:19. > :20:27.sprinters very muscular. You two both generate incredible power
:20:27. > :20:31.without the big mussels? Right. We are able to use our sprint much more
:20:31. > :20:36.efficiently than those who are stronger. The stronger athletes, if
:20:36. > :20:40.they use their power I don't know what happens. They are using half of
:20:40. > :20:46.what they actually train with. does the rest of the season pan out
:20:46. > :20:53.for you? I'm off to America on Monday. Then all building towards
:20:53. > :20:57.the World Championships and hopefully come away with a title.
:20:57. > :21:02.Rnlingts I'm off to home, then Senegal and some places after. I
:21:02. > :21:06.have a tight schedule. No trials or championships to work to. I'm just
:21:06. > :21:16.having fun. Great to see you here Kim and Greg as well. Good luck for
:21:16. > :21:17.
:21:17. > :21:23.the rest of the season. I am ear here with Andrew Starr.
:21:23. > :21:27.Congratulations for the BAFTA last tango in Halifax? Thank you. Great
:21:27. > :21:33.surprise. Great actors, brilliant production. Very happy. How was it
:21:33. > :21:38.out there today? A bit warmer than we're used to in Manchester? A felt
:21:38. > :21:44.out of place without it raining. It was very warm. Very different
:21:44. > :21:48.running around the streets thorn going round in a Cortina in the
:21:48. > :21:52.seventies. It was a fantastic turnout. People running for friends,
:21:52. > :21:59.families and charities. reception you get from the crowd?
:21:59. > :22:04.They are amazing. They took Life On Mars to their heart. We are really
:22:04. > :22:14.received when we come back. You need to be dragging a bit and someone
:22:14. > :22:20.shouts "come on Raymondo", and you're off again. There's a whole
:22:20. > :22:24.gang here? Leukaemia and lymphoma do a great job as do all the charities.
:22:24. > :22:33.The little bit of pain I had out there is next to nothings to the
:22:33. > :22:37.guys fighting the disease. Sum it up, get on with it and stop moaning.
:22:37. > :22:44.Congratulations on today. Thank you. I've been joined by some lovely
:22:44. > :22:47.ladies. Joanna. Helen. Amanda.Who are you running for? The Multiple
:22:47. > :22:51.Sclerosis Society. My husband was diagnose in the 1997 with multiple
:22:51. > :22:57.sclerosis. They've been a wonderful support to us since. Are you from
:22:57. > :23:02.Manchester? From Wil multiple sclerosis low in Chesire.
:23:02. > :23:09.atmosphere today has been incredible? Wonderful. Amazing. I'm
:23:09. > :23:16.not even nervous anymore. How's your preparation been? Trying since about
:23:16. > :23:26.Christmas. Is this your first time here? First time doing 10K. I've
:23:26. > :23:26.
:23:26. > :23:30.done 5K in the past in Tatton. running in the name of my husband.
:23:30. > :23:34.Died at the age of 24. Cancer Research. It has been a traumatic
:23:34. > :23:40.time for you. But days like this where there are so many people with
:23:40. > :23:48.so many stories, it gives you hope? It does. We'll beat it. Been lovely
:23:48. > :23:55.to speak to you. Have a good one ladies. A lot of emotion out there
:23:55. > :24:01.today for a lot of people. Working hard towards whatever causes.
:24:01. > :24:05.Whether it is a challenge to complete the distance in a best
:24:05. > :24:10.time. Been a lovely day to do that. Still they continue. They are
:24:10. > :24:14.streaming across in front of us. Lots of good luck messages. So many
:24:14. > :24:24.people trying to get close to the finish line to get a good view. Some
:24:24. > :24:25.
:24:25. > :24:29.yet to still have their chance to complete their race for the day.
:24:29. > :24:35.Loads of celebs been out there. Depends on your view. I'm told the
:24:35. > :24:40.quickest one, the winner of the celeb race was Tony Ellis, former
:24:40. > :24:47.professional footballer, ran just over 32 minutes. Very good. Very
:24:47. > :24:52.good. They've done studies on David Beckham and found he runs about 10K
:24:52. > :25:01.m during a match up and down the pitch. I suppose he has the basis of
:25:01. > :25:05.some 10K training. 32 minutes is a decent time. There's still many down
:25:05. > :25:10.there at the start. Many stories still to tell. Let's have another
:25:10. > :25:20.quick word with Phil. If you were watching earlier in the show, you'll
:25:20. > :25:24.have seen the story of Sam and swear Ruschelit Pledge a Pint. Blood, not
:25:24. > :25:29.money, not alcohol. How was the race? Great. It was Sarah's first
:25:29. > :25:33.race. Ask her. He was very kind to me. He said keep going, the crowd
:25:33. > :25:36.was fantastic. I've always been the other side of the barrier. Sam's the
:25:36. > :25:42.runner in my house. Great to be the right side of the barrier. Have you
:25:42. > :25:48.got the bug now? Will you do it again? Halfway round she said maybe
:25:48. > :25:53.we should find a nice half marathon to run. Sun's come out in Manchester
:25:53. > :25:57.today! The cause you're running for, you must have a great sense of
:25:57. > :26:02.satisfaction when you complete a race like this? We went out for a
:26:02. > :26:07.loose run across the fields last night and shed a tear saying we are
:26:07. > :26:13.very lucky I'm here. It is very emotional. Been a remarkable
:26:13. > :26:23.fightback by you. Con greatlations. You completed it and many more.
:26:23. > :26:23.
:26:23. > :26:26.Please pledge us a pint. Thank you very much. We saw some super elite
:26:26. > :26:31.races earlier on. Tirunesh Dibaba ran away from the field. It was a
:26:31. > :26:37.new course record. One of the top ten times of all time from the
:26:37. > :26:43.Ethiopian super star. Then in the men's race, we'd hoped to see Haile
:26:43. > :26:46.Gebrselassie take his fifth run but Moses Kipsiro from Uganda ran away
:26:46. > :26:51.from Wilson Kipsang to take the men's race. We're coming near to the
:26:51. > :26:56.end of our broadcast here in Manchester. But there's still a host
:26:56. > :27:06.of sporting action on the BBC. Arsenal Ladies versus Bristol
:27:06. > :27:13.
:27:13. > :27:19.If you like your sport at a slower pace, there's golf from Wentworth.
:27:19. > :27:24.The PGA championships. Highlights on BBC Two at 6.00pm.
:27:24. > :27:30.The next athletics coverage is on the red button. Diamond League
:27:30. > :27:36.action from Eugene. Mo Farah going in the 10,000 metres. Then the
:27:36. > :27:40.Diamond League heads to Europe and Usain Bolt takes to the Italian
:27:40. > :27:47.stage. We'll be live on BBC Three from 7.00pm.
:27:47. > :27:51.A huge athletics season. We'll be hear to follow it all on the --
