:01:15. > :01:22.Hello and welcome to Newcastle. Once again, thousands have joined us here

:01:22. > :01:28.for this year's Bupa Great North Run. Today, we will be hearing tales

:01:28. > :01:32.of bravery, and millions of pounds will be raised for charity, and

:01:32. > :01:37.there is also an elite race, with some of the sport's guest stars.

:01:38. > :01:39.After double gold at the Moscow World Championships last month, Mo

:01:39. > :01:44.Farah makes the move from track to World Championships last month, Mo

:01:44. > :01:48.road today, leading one of the strongest fields ever. But he will

:01:48. > :01:51.have to beat two all-time greats from Ethiopia, Haile Gebrselassie

:01:51. > :01:55.and Kenenisa Bekele, the most from Ethiopia, Haile Gebrselassie

:01:55. > :02:02.successful distance runner of modern times. And the women's race is

:02:02. > :02:10.mouthwatering as well, with Tirunesh Dibaba fresh from gold in Moscow.

:02:10. > :02:13.But she has to take on her Ethiopian team-mate, Defar. Who will come out

:02:13. > :02:17.But she has to take on her Ethiopian on top? That elite race will take

:02:18. > :02:20.place shortly. But as we know, the Great North Run is not just about

:02:20. > :02:24.who can run the fastest half marathon come it is also about the

:02:24. > :02:32.stories of these people, whose victory will not be judged against

:02:32. > :02:38.the clock. Almost one year ago, we had a beautiful baby boy born at 30

:02:38. > :02:45.weeks, and sadly, he was stillborn, and it was the saddest day of my

:02:45. > :02:51.life. We had great support from the SANDS charity. Every day in the UK,

:02:51. > :02:55.17 babies and sadly do not make it. We are supporting mothers and

:02:55. > :03:06.fathers who have lost their babies, and behind me, we have the other

:03:06. > :03:10.runners! We are 17 altogether. Two more weeks until you get married,

:03:10. > :03:15.but were you not due to be married already? Yes, we had it booked in

:03:15. > :03:19.for yesterday, and we did not realise that we had entered a run at

:03:19. > :03:24.the same time. When it came through, we did not know what to do. It would

:03:24. > :03:29.the same time. When it came through, not have been a great thing to do

:03:29. > :03:32.the day after our wedding day. . I am running for Shelter today, a

:03:32. > :03:35.the day after our wedding day. . I charity I have supported a lot over

:03:35. > :03:38.the years. There are so many charities here today, it is hard to

:03:38. > :03:49.the years. There are so many pick who to run for. I am running

:03:49. > :03:53.for Mencap, but everybody has got a cause that they want to support here

:03:53. > :03:59.today. I am running for the special care unit at the hospital in

:03:59. > :04:04.Newcastle. We see on a daily basis where all of the money which is

:04:04. > :04:09.raised goes to. And obviously, a special day for you, running for

:04:10. > :04:11.your dad. Yes, my mum will be watching, she will be in tears, but

:04:11. > :04:17.your dad. Yes, my mum will be it is for my dad, it is a great

:04:17. > :04:20.course. My dad had cancer, and we are running for that reason. It is

:04:20. > :04:48.our first time running together. are used to dealing with the cold.

:04:48. > :04:57.You are dressed as penguins, but what is this all about? It is

:04:57. > :05:06.raising money for Yorkshire Cancer B. We are cycling back tomorrow. Are

:05:06. > :05:12.you not going to be a bit tired? We have got some penguin beer laid on

:05:12. > :05:14.for us when we get back home. A sense of achievement you get after

:05:15. > :05:22.months of training, getting to the end, there is nothing like it.

:05:23. > :05:26.Well, the masses are ready, the celebrities are ready, and we know

:05:26. > :05:31.Mo Farah is ready. So, to guide you through today's event, we have our

:05:31. > :05:41.commentary team of Paula Radcliffe, Brendan Foster, Paul Dickinson, and

:05:41. > :05:48.of course, Steve Cram. And the Bupa Great North Run 2013 is

:05:48. > :05:52.under way. Immediately, Cassidy, of Canada, and David Weir, of Great

:05:52. > :05:58.Britain, locked together. David Weir will not take his eyes off the

:05:58. > :06:04.wheelchair of Josh Cassidy. I can tell you, down at the seafront here,

:06:04. > :06:06.in South Shields, despite the fact that the wind is blowing very

:06:06. > :06:17.in South Shields, despite the fact strongly, the atmosphere, as always,

:06:17. > :06:20.is absolutely wonderful. Certainly, David Weir has been a Paralympic

:06:20. > :06:26.superstar for quite a few years now. It would be a desperate shame if he

:06:26. > :06:31.did decide to retire before Rio. The whole world of Paralympic sport

:06:31. > :06:37.would be eager to see him racing again, and just thinking back to

:06:37. > :06:43.those moments in the stadium, the Paralympic Games, last year, every

:06:43. > :06:50.time he went out onto the track, 80,000 people were cheering madly

:06:50. > :06:55.for him. So, an early leader there are, but the two principals, Cassidy

:06:55. > :06:59.and David Weir, just behind him, and we expect to see them coming onto

:06:59. > :07:04.the seafront in South Shields, to go for the major medals. Could it be

:07:04. > :07:12.David Weir for the fourth time, or maybe Josh Cassidy, also for the

:07:12. > :07:18.fourth time? STEVE CRAM: Away they go, then, the

:07:18. > :07:25.women's Great North Run under way in 2013, and what a race we have in

:07:25. > :07:36.prospect. Yesterday, we had the Great City Games. The leader there,

:07:36. > :07:42.looking at her watch. I think she has been asked to maybe see if she

:07:42. > :07:45.might want to run a few early miles at a decent pace. Alongside me this

:07:45. > :07:53.morning, Brendan Foster and Paula Radcliffe. Paula Radcliffe, a

:07:53. > :08:00.mouthwatering race... Yes, a very good race in store, and a lot of

:08:00. > :08:03.Ethiopian pride at stake, between Defar and Dibaba, but as you

:08:03. > :08:09.mentioned, I think Jeptoo would like to get into the mix as well. I think

:08:09. > :08:16.Dibaba wanted something around 31 minutes, through ten K, which would

:08:16. > :08:21.put her below 66. So, Charlene Thomas looks as though she has gone

:08:21. > :08:24.out at that pace. Nobody seems that keen to follow her at first, but

:08:24. > :08:32.now, Dibaba is settling in behind her. Well, Dibaba has been asking if

:08:32. > :08:36.anybody is going to help her run a her. Well, Dibaba has been asking if

:08:36. > :08:47.fast time. We think this is a competitive race. Also, she will

:08:47. > :08:55.find this place a little bit slow, because her normal pace is mile

:08:55. > :09:00.pace. Also in that company at the moment is Prokopcuka. They go over

:09:00. > :09:05.the iconic Tyne Bridge, past the stadium, and then the wind will

:09:05. > :09:08.really be behind them after six miles, the fast section of the

:09:08. > :09:13.course, entre John Reid Road, heading down eventually onto the

:09:14. > :09:19.coast here at South Shields, where we're sitting, basically waiting for

:09:19. > :09:26.them. It is a very firmly rooted these days. The first mile is often

:09:26. > :09:31.a bit quicker now. The second mile can be a bit slower. And then the

:09:31. > :09:36.third one picks up again. But interestingly, how many times have

:09:36. > :09:44.we spoken about the idea of setting a pace on the track? Both Dibaba and

:09:44. > :09:47.Defar do not always go with the pace, but certainly Dibaba, this

:09:47. > :09:53.morning, looks like she is up for this. Dibaba and Prokopcuka

:09:53. > :09:57.following her very closely. Charlene Thomas has been asked to at least

:09:57. > :10:09.get this thing going quickly over the first couple of miles. It looks

:10:09. > :10:13.as though David Weir is clear. They have been going for just over 14

:10:13. > :10:19.minutes, and no sign of Josh Cassidy. We are just trying to see

:10:19. > :10:24.if we can see the group behind. Joss Cassidy, wearing a similar strip to

:10:24. > :10:28.David Weir. David Weir certainly found that part of the course very

:10:28. > :10:32.hard indeed, physically taxing, but now getting back into his stride,

:10:32. > :10:34.having a little look behind to see where the chasing group is. And so

:10:34. > :10:42.far, they are behind, if not more. There is the

:10:42. > :10:50.leader in the women's, four times the champion on the Great North Run

:10:50. > :10:54.in the past, Shelly Woods. And we understand that Josh Cassidy has

:10:54. > :10:57.pulled out, the Canadian may well have a mechanical problem. Shelly

:10:57. > :11:01.Woods leading the women's race at the moment.

:11:01. > :11:04.STEVE CRAM: These three big names starting to pull away at the five

:11:05. > :11:10.STEVE CRAM: These three big names kilometre point. 16.22 was the

:11:10. > :11:14.official time at five kilometres, which is a pretty steady pace. You

:11:14. > :11:18.would issue and they will pick up from that, though, it is not

:11:18. > :11:24.superfast, not the kind of pace which had been rumoured that Dibaba

:11:24. > :11:27.was looking for. She wanted 31 minutes through ten kilometres,

:11:27. > :11:34.theoretically, but they are not going at that kind of pace.

:11:34. > :11:39.PAULA RADCLIFFE: I think of that kind of pace in the early stages,

:11:39. > :11:42.without any doubt, we are going to see this race picked up in the

:11:42. > :11:52.second half, in the last couple of miles. That is where we will see the

:11:52. > :11:53.faster miles. Usually six and seven, or seven and eight, are slightly

:11:53. > :11:59.downhill and very fast, and then the or seven and eight, are slightly

:11:59. > :12:05.last mile along the seafront, if the wind stays in their favour, that

:12:05. > :12:09.should also be very fast. Back at the start, all the excite and

:12:09. > :12:14.building, and of course it should be. This is the most outstanding

:12:14. > :12:19.line-up of talent that we have seen for a long time. -- all the

:12:19. > :12:23.excitement. Kenenisa Bekele, it has not been a great year for him so

:12:23. > :12:28.far, but he might be looking to get one over on the old master here,

:12:28. > :12:31.Haile Gebrselassie. A new generation, but they are still going

:12:31. > :12:38.to have to work hard to beat the old man. And is this the start of a

:12:38. > :12:44.to have to work hard to beat the old whole new sector of Mo Farah's

:12:44. > :12:47.career? A huge welcome onto the start line for the first time in the

:12:47. > :13:16.Great North Run. Christine O'Hara go and Graeme Swann

:13:16. > :13:22.in the starting box there. STEVE CRAM: Every single year, tens

:13:22. > :13:26.of thousands of people come, some from just around the corner, some

:13:26. > :13:32.from far-away. Local athletics clubs are well represented. But now they

:13:32. > :13:36.come from all over the UK, Europe and the world, to take part. It is

:13:36. > :13:43.perhaps the world 's greatest half marathon. We have had warmer days,

:13:43. > :13:48.sunnier days, but that does not matter when you are taking part. The

:13:48. > :13:53.weather is always a bit of a sideshow. The challenge ahead is

:13:53. > :13:57.what brings people to this, and the atmosphere and the sense of

:13:57. > :14:02.achievement, which they will all have, the vast majority of them,

:14:02. > :14:09.when they get to the other end, in an hour, two hours, three hours, who

:14:09. > :14:15.knows? So, 400 metres to go for David Weir, to become our first

:14:15. > :14:22.winner this year. Very disappointing that we lost Josh Cassidy very, very

:14:22. > :14:28.early. Both former champions, of course. Mechanical problems for the

:14:28. > :14:31.Canadian. But no doubt about the winner here. Four times the

:14:31. > :14:42.Paralympic champion in London last year. David Weir, such a tough

:14:42. > :14:45.competitor. Interesting to hear him sounding very cagey about his

:14:45. > :14:52.prospects of competing in Rio in three years' time. I am sure he

:14:52. > :14:57.will, I hope he will. But no doubt about the fact that he has won on

:14:57. > :15:03.Tyneside once again. Four times the winner of the Great North Run now,

:15:03. > :15:08.David Weir. It really is warming up in this women's race. They have just

:15:08. > :15:12.run a 4.42 mile for the seventh mile, may be one of the quickest

:15:12. > :15:25.ever miles in the women's Great North Run. And they are not letting

:15:25. > :15:29.up, either. Meanwhile, back with the men, the Gateshead Stadium looking

:15:29. > :15:35.resplendent. We had the European Team Championships there this year.

:15:35. > :15:45.And what a sprint finish we had, didn't we, Brendan? It was the most

:15:45. > :15:49.amazing last lap I have seen, 50.89 for Mo Farah, the man before him

:15:49. > :15:54.used to starters with his last lap, Kenenisa Bekele, and the man for him

:15:54. > :15:58.who used to startle us with hybrid Gabreselassie. These three athletes

:15:58. > :16:03.running through Gateshead Stadium, it warms my heart, it is fantastic

:16:03. > :16:07.to see -- Haile Gebrselassie. Three of the greatest. Mo is on his way

:16:07. > :16:13.into the record books, the questions Amir Khan Kenenisa Bekele do on the

:16:13. > :16:19.roads what he has done on the track. We are operating well and 67 minute

:16:19. > :16:24.pace, heading into below 66s. Jeptoo has put her foot down and this is

:16:24. > :16:30.the first significant change. Meseret Defar trying to hang on but

:16:30. > :16:37.Dibaba struggling. Daylight opening, more than Dibaba would want. Meseret

:16:37. > :16:39.Defar looking back as if to check where she is because she would have

:16:39. > :16:44.expected her to be covering it and now she is moving up much closer to

:16:44. > :16:50.make sure that Jeptoo knows you have not got rid of me yet. Meseret Defar

:16:50. > :16:52.was almost acting as a bridge to Jeptoo there, looked around, that

:16:52. > :16:55.something, realised her team-mate Jeptoo there, looked around, that

:16:55. > :16:58.was struggling and suddenly closed the gap on Jeptoo. She was almost

:16:59. > :17:03.trying to drag Dibaba with her, wasn't she? It is a downhill section

:17:03. > :17:07.but look at her, she is waving, saying, come on, come on, this is

:17:07. > :17:12.where it is happening, you have got to be here. That is interesting, she

:17:12. > :17:14.did exactly that, but Priscah Jeptoo, a very experienced

:17:14. > :17:28.international fleet come you don't Jeptoo, a very experienced

:17:28. > :17:30.win the London asthma -- you don't win the London Marathon by accident,

:17:30. > :17:31.she decided she would not let Meseret Defar dominate this one and

:17:32. > :17:34.for the first time in a long time we Meseret Defar dominate this one and

:17:34. > :17:35.are seeing Dibaba come under pressure. She won it convincingly

:17:36. > :17:39.are seeing Dibaba come under last time and Priscah Jeptoo, you

:17:39. > :17:43.know the intent here. She wants to try to win it from this far out. She

:17:43. > :17:50.wants to try to break Meseret Defar, who recently beat Tirunesh

:17:50. > :17:53.Dibaba at 5000 metres. A world champion at 5000 metres, the Olympic

:17:53. > :17:57.champion at 5000 metres and she is coming under pressure now. You

:17:58. > :18:03.talked about 5000 metres and they have just run 15.03 for the last

:18:03. > :18:09.five K, my bit of an undulating part of the course. I can't remember how

:18:09. > :18:14.many women in the world this year ran under 15 minutes, the qualifying

:18:14. > :18:17.time was 15.18 to get to the World Championships, so that gives you an

:18:17. > :18:21.indication of how fast they are going, that is quick, that section.

:18:21. > :18:26.It is, downhill with the wind behind you but it is very fast. They have

:18:26. > :18:28.had that pull as well pretty much most of the ninth mile, gradually

:18:28. > :18:32.had that pull as well pretty much uphill and usually that is one of

:18:32. > :18:36.the slower miles and they still come about in 5.09. It is doing damage

:18:36. > :18:41.and is starting to do damage to Meseret Defar as well. The gaps are

:18:41. > :18:45.opening up and she takes the shorter tangent around the roundabout and

:18:45. > :18:48.close it a bit but Jeptoo is definitely turning the screw here

:18:48. > :18:54.and it is going to start doing major damage. She is trying to win it from

:18:54. > :18:58.here, from a long way out and Meseret Defar is under pressure but

:18:58. > :19:01.still has the composure to nip through on the inside around the

:19:01. > :19:07.roundabout, mentally she is in good shape. This is a real brave attempts

:19:07. > :19:10.by Priscah Jeptoo to take on two of the greatest and try and beat them.

:19:10. > :19:14.As we say that, three of the greatest in the men's race. Well, it

:19:14. > :19:43.is breaking may be helping them. The Red Arrows,

:19:43. > :19:46.we were hoping we could see them at the start but the weather conditions

:19:46. > :19:58.were not conducive, but great to see them flying over the Tyne Bridge.

:19:58. > :20:11.Impressive, as ever. As precise as ever. The Red Arrows as much a

:20:11. > :20:13.fixture of the Great North Run as the sight of thousands of people

:20:13. > :20:24.crossing the Tyne Bridge. Right on cue, Shelly Woods it is who

:20:24. > :20:37.wins the women's wheelchair race yet again. Five times the winner of this

:20:37. > :20:40.race to. -- of this race now. Bekele has a little behind, he is aware of

:20:40. > :20:45.what is going on in front of him because these two are beginning to

:20:45. > :20:49.pull away. A bit of pressure applied by Haile Gebrselassie. Mo looks

:20:49. > :20:52.incredibly comfortable at the moment and is wondering whether Bekele,

:20:52. > :20:57.that is the last he will see of him, I suspect it might be. Haile

:20:57. > :21:00.that is the last he will see of him, Gebrselassie looked over his

:21:00. > :21:04.shoulder, a confident look. Right next to him, Mo Farah is there

:21:04. > :21:08.without a problem but can allude to Bekele, those yards opening, he is

:21:08. > :21:12.trying to stick to it but if he doesn't close the gap pretty quickly

:21:12. > :21:23.I think we are going to see the race down to two men. The great one and

:21:23. > :21:29.our great one, Mo Farah. Just to recap, the ten smile, 4.34 for

:21:29. > :21:35.Jeptoo. What we haven't got is the 11th mile but what is evidenced is

:21:35. > :21:37.that she is not slowing down. Meseret Defar just cresting the hill

:21:37. > :21:41.that she is not slowing down. where. Maybe the gap hasn't

:21:41. > :21:44.increased too much but this is relentless from Jeptoo. She put the

:21:44. > :21:49.pressure on the right time and I have been handed from the

:21:49. > :21:54.statistician, the 11 smile was covered in 4.55 as well. Not uneasy

:21:54. > :21:59.mile as well so not slowing down and Paula's course record. Macro Getting

:21:59. > :22:06.nervous here! I think she will be just outside it but she is on her

:22:06. > :22:09.own and the breeze may be across the athletes rather than behind their

:22:09. > :22:15.backs. Meseret Defar is not giving up, still moving pretty well. Jeptoo

:22:15. > :22:21.is a good 100 metres or so ahead and looking pretty strong. Once she

:22:21. > :22:25.makes the drop on the sea should front she will send the finish is

:22:25. > :22:28.not too far away and as long as she hasn't overcooked it, she should be

:22:28. > :22:34.OK. There is the gap, maybe 70 or 80 metres. Meanwhile, a great race in

:22:34. > :22:38.the women's is being followed by a metres. Meanwhile, a great race in

:22:38. > :22:40.great race and the men's. We are talking about Kenenisa Bekele, when

:22:40. > :22:43.he looks as though he is struggling talking about Kenenisa Bekele, when

:22:43. > :22:46.a little bit, you can never quite tell, all of a sudden he can turn it

:22:46. > :22:54.a little bit, you can never quite around again and he is back in the

:22:54. > :22:56.race. The three of them back -- battle up together and most

:22:56. > :23:01.significantly, Mo has taken his hat off! The women are on the seafront

:23:01. > :23:09.and the crowds here are getting excited about this. Paul is getting

:23:09. > :23:15.nervous because the course record is 65 minutes and 40 seconds, set in

:23:15. > :23:18.2003. The only person who to have won the London Marathon and then the

:23:18. > :23:23.Great North Run in the same year, was that year in 2003, was Paula

:23:23. > :23:27.Radcliffe and Jeptoo attempting to to do the same. She has won the

:23:27. > :23:32.London Marathon and she is looking strong, pushing on. Yes, she is

:23:32. > :23:38.looking strong. 800 metres to go there, through the 12th mile in 4.54

:23:38. > :23:42.which is under the place that I ran in 2003. She is pushing on all the

:23:42. > :23:48.time and she can finish now, blowing hard back-up the road here. The wind

:23:48. > :23:50.is coming across and I think she is getting plenty of shelter from the

:23:50. > :23:54.is coming across and I think she is strength and depth of the crowd

:23:54. > :24:00.because despite the weather and chilly temperatures a lot of people

:24:00. > :24:03.are supporting the finishers. This is one of those races where we can

:24:03. > :24:07.sit and predict anything but all we have to do is wait and watch because

:24:07. > :24:12.you cannot tell what is going to happen here. Is Mo going to go

:24:12. > :24:15.early? Will Haile Gebrselassie continue to apply the pressure? Is

:24:15. > :24:20.Kenenisa Bekele coming under pressure? You can't answer any of

:24:20. > :24:25.those questions. Priscah Jeptoo, Meseret Defar on the way for a

:24:25. > :24:27.those questions. Priscah Jeptoo, personal best but there is Priscah

:24:28. > :24:33.Jeptoo. Paul is looking anxiously at the sign which says 400 metres to

:24:33. > :24:38.go, 64 minutes. She is not going to run 60 seconds for the last 400

:24:38. > :24:41.metres, I am pretty sure. There is the great Meseret Defar running the

:24:41. > :24:46.fastest she has ever run and finding an athlete so much better than her

:24:46. > :24:52.today. Priscah Jeptoo looks a little tired with 400 metres to go and you

:24:52. > :24:56.never know. The time is 65.40, the course record, it is going to be

:24:56. > :25:01.incredibly tight here. I suspect she might just miss it. A little smile

:25:01. > :25:05.across Paula Radcliffe's face here! The quickest half marathon in the

:25:05. > :25:11.world this year was Lucy, when she beat Priscah Jeptoo in the race

:25:11. > :25:17.earlier in the year at the beginning of the year, when there was just two

:25:17. > :25:22.seconds separating them. Jeptoo run 66.111 that occasion. But the

:25:22. > :25:26.victory today looks assured. Even though she is a little tired with

:25:26. > :25:36.200 metres to go, Meseret Defar is too far back. Cheered on by these

:25:36. > :25:41.big crowds at the finish. Our Armed Forces on display and giving her a

:25:41. > :25:45.great welcome as she has about 100 metres to go now. That record

:25:45. > :25:49.disappearing. She is looking up at the clock, she can see it herself.

:25:49. > :25:54.It is going to be very close. It is going to be a great win, London

:25:54. > :25:57.Marathon earlier in the year and now the Great North Run. Priscah Jeptoo

:25:57. > :26:03.of Kenya takes the title, the fastest in the world this year

:26:03. > :26:06.outside the course record. A brilliant run, really strong running

:26:06. > :26:11.in the middle of the race, pushed on hard. She put some hard miles in,

:26:11. > :26:18.broke Dibaba first and then broke Meseret Defar but Meseret Defar has

:26:18. > :26:25.done incredibly well. The Ethiopian record, 67.03, that will be smashed

:26:25. > :26:29.by Meseret Defar. Cramp right at the end, she will be OK and when she

:26:29. > :26:34.sees the time that is a good indication of her potential. Really

:26:34. > :26:38.it has been Meseret Defar over this last year or two who has got the

:26:38. > :26:43.better off Dibaba on the track and again doing it on the road. Paula,

:26:43. > :26:47.that is still a very fast run, under 67 minutes for Dibaba as well. What

:26:47. > :26:53.are run by Jeptoo and a solid, really good I think showing from

:26:53. > :26:58.Meseret Defar in second place. Indefinitely. Dibaba will be the one

:26:58. > :27:01.who will be the one who will go Indefinitely. Dibaba will be the one

:27:01. > :27:08.concerned, thinking about moving to the marathon. The masses are

:27:08. > :27:11.covering the Tyne Bridge, various charities, fundraising, athletes

:27:11. > :27:19.running for their own personal best times. Thousands of them there. It

:27:19. > :27:23.is raining quite heavily there. The wind has been pretty incessant

:27:23. > :27:32.through the whole morning, of course, but it has been to be fair

:27:32. > :27:37.not enough faces too much. Look how hard Mo is working, there is an

:27:37. > :27:40.uphill section. There is the Lizard lane roundabout, steep downhill, we

:27:40. > :27:42.have talked about that, is that an opportunity for somebody to make the

:27:42. > :27:46.have talked about that, is that an first break? After that downhill it

:27:47. > :27:49.is a sharp left and then we are on the seafront, then the long run to

:27:49. > :27:54.the finish where the crowds are watching this on the big screen. All

:27:54. > :27:59.the umbrellas are up and they are anticipating a big finish here. Will

:27:59. > :28:03.Mo Farah leave it until the end? Will he just wait for the kick?

:28:03. > :28:09.Wilbur Kelly try to take this away from Gabreselassie as he -- has he

:28:09. > :28:13.got a push in the last mile or so? Can Haile Gebrselassie when the

:28:13. > :28:18.finish out of the two younger men? Town this steep section, Haile

:28:18. > :28:23.Gebrselassie looking for room. Mo Farah does not want to go to hard

:28:23. > :28:27.down here, I hate downhill running, it is tough. He's trying to take my

:28:27. > :28:31.advice, I said don't hammer down this hill because it is a very steep

:28:31. > :28:37.drop and the temptation is to try and get a gap and run hard down

:28:37. > :28:41.there but that does do damage and make it very difficult to pick up in

:28:41. > :28:45.the section here. Bekele has used the downhill and you can see Haile

:28:45. > :28:49.Gebrselassie putting his arms to his side and letting his body almost

:28:49. > :28:53.float down, which is the right way to do it but Bekele has managed to

:28:53. > :28:55.get a bit of a gap and Haile Gebrselassie getting across to the

:28:55. > :29:08.other side of the road, I don't know if that is to gain more

:29:08. > :29:13.other side of the road, I don't know attempt to win this race. Kenenisa

:29:13. > :29:16.Bekele used the downhill section, Mo lost ten or 15 metres and now the

:29:16. > :29:21.pressure that was on Mo Farah is being applied to a much greater

:29:21. > :29:28.extent. That effort he is having to put in to get back to Bekele will

:29:28. > :29:31.take a bit away of his sting in his spring finish. Is he making any

:29:31. > :29:35.ground on Bekele? The gap might be getting bigger. The greatest

:29:35. > :29:39.cross-country runner of all time used is technique from cross-country

:29:39. > :29:42.running, up and down is the technique, he ran down that hill

:29:42. > :29:48.magnificently. He accelerated down the hill. Mo held back a little and

:29:48. > :29:52.he has stolen the gap now. Here comes Mo Farah, working hard,

:29:52. > :29:56.attacking. The only thing we knew about this finishing run was that

:29:56. > :30:00.Haile Gebrselassie was going to come under a bit of pressure in the

:30:00. > :30:04.finishing run. I did say to Kenenisa Bekele, he said, don't worry, I am

:30:04. > :30:08.fit and ready because everybody was doubting his ability. Here comes Mo

:30:08. > :30:13.Farah now, working at it, digging deep. The one thing about Mo Farah

:30:13. > :30:18.that you know is he will always give 100%. He is, in his own terms, a

:30:18. > :30:24.grafter, but he is running against a man who has come back to form and he

:30:24. > :30:26.has done that before. We have seen him be disappointing for a while and

:30:26. > :30:29.come back to form. In the middle of him be disappointing for a while and

:30:29. > :30:32.this race you would not have given tuppence for his chances and here we

:30:32. > :30:43.are now, Kenenisa Bekele testing Mo Farah. Mo Farah is fighting really,

:30:43. > :30:46.really hard. I thought he was working hard couple of miles back,

:30:46. > :30:49.you could tell from his facial expression. This is Mo Farah under

:30:49. > :30:55.real pressure, gritting his teeth, trying to find something, because

:30:55. > :31:01.Bekele is not letting up. That gap if anything is getting bigger. It is

:31:01. > :31:05.about five seconds. Bekele strong, confident and quick. Unless Mo can

:31:05. > :31:10.turn around them are meant, which is going towards Bekele, he is going to

:31:10. > :31:15.run out of time, space and speed. Well, the greatest cross-country

:31:15. > :31:17.runner of all time, the great track man of many years ago, the world

:31:17. > :31:22.record-holder for 5000 metres and man of many years ago, the world

:31:22. > :31:27.10,000 metres, on this performance, is telling everybody, I am going to

:31:27. > :31:31.be as good on the roads as I have been on the track. He wants to be,

:31:31. > :31:36.he has built his own running track so that he can get his training

:31:36. > :31:39.done, and Mo Farah is on his way. PAULA RADCLIFFE: Mo Farah will be

:31:39. > :31:40.getting great support on this closing straight, and he needs to

:31:40. > :31:46.keep focused on Kenenisa Bekele. He closing straight, and he needs to

:31:46. > :31:54.keeps looking over his shoulder. We do not know what that indicates

:31:54. > :31:58.exactly. I do not think that gap is closing. But all of a sudden, a

:31:58. > :32:03.different cadence from Mo Farah, is this over, is he changing gear?

:32:03. > :32:07.Kenenisa Bekele does not have the pace he used to have, but is there

:32:08. > :32:13.enough room, enough distance, for Mo Farah to close this gap?

:32:13. > :32:18.BRENDAN FOSTER: It is a last effort from Mo Farah. Can he do on the road

:32:18. > :32:22.what he has done on the track? Bekele is saying, do not write me

:32:22. > :32:25.off. 400 metres to go, here comes Mo Farah. He is running like we have

:32:25. > :32:29.off. 400 metres to go, here comes Mo seen him run all season. He is

:32:29. > :32:36.heading for Kenenisa Bekele, and Bekele knows he is coming. Has he

:32:36. > :32:39.left it too late? 300 metres to go, Bekele behind again, but Mo Farah

:32:39. > :32:44.has made a huge effort to try to get back to him, and the crowd know it.

:32:44. > :32:48.They are cheering him on, they have seen him do it on the track. Can he

:32:48. > :32:55.do it on the roads here? 200 metres to go. Look V leading, Mo Farah on

:32:55. > :32:57.the charge. A great battle between two great champions. Bekele it in

:32:57. > :33:02.his teeth, but Mo Farah is coming! two great champions. Bekele it in

:33:02. > :33:06.It is relentless. He wants to win this. He is digging deep. Bekele

:33:06. > :33:12.spells again, but Mo Farah, fighting hard. The two of them, almost

:33:12. > :33:18.side-by-side. He has got to make one more effort to try and get there,

:33:18. > :33:26.but Bekele is go to hold him off. A great race, a great win for a great

:33:26. > :33:29.champion. The Great North Run goes to Bekele. Mo Farah has to settle

:33:29. > :33:35.for second place, in one of the greatest finishes we have ever seen

:33:35. > :33:39.in this race. Just for a moment, it looked as though he might do it.

:33:39. > :33:47.Just for a little while, it looked as though his track speed might pay

:33:47. > :33:51.off. And the two younger men pulled away in the latter stages from

:33:51. > :33:56.perhaps the greatest of all time, Haile Gebrselassie. He might not

:33:56. > :34:02.know who won this... Well, now he does. Just as a bit of a

:34:02. > :34:11.consolation, I am told that is a world record for over 40-year-olds

:34:12. > :34:14.in a half marathon. So, just outside 60 minutes for Bekele. That is well

:34:14. > :34:29.outside his personal best, of course. Johnny Miller heading up the

:34:29. > :34:33.next group of British athletes. Many congratulations on a great win cash

:34:33. > :34:41.how confident were you that you could run like this? I was

:34:41. > :34:47.concentrating hard and training hard and feeling confident. My injury has

:34:47. > :34:53.been getting better and better, and and feeling confident. My injury has

:34:53. > :34:58.in the end, I did it. It was a great race I thought, when he went, with

:34:58. > :35:01.one mile to go, I thought the pace was just ridiculous. I thought I

:35:01. > :35:04.could come back and close the gap slowly. I managed to close it a

:35:05. > :35:09.little bit, but you cannot take away what he has. He has great speed. It

:35:09. > :35:17.came down to the line. It was a great race, and Haile did most of

:35:17. > :35:22.the work, and kept pushing. You young boys, with the 40-year-old in

:35:22. > :35:23.the middle, and then you kick away from him after he has done all of

:35:23. > :35:29.the middle, and then you kick away the work? ! It was the only chance I

:35:29. > :35:33.had today, to push from the beginning, but it was wonderful. Of

:35:33. > :35:41.course what you got, which neither of these two got, was a world

:35:41. > :35:45.record. At least it is something! And Mo, in terms of your

:35:45. > :35:51.preparations for London, how much did this teach you today? A lot,

:35:51. > :35:56.because the World Championships was my main focus. I only had two or

:35:56. > :36:00.three weeks preparing for this race, but at the same time, I am

:36:00. > :36:04.disappointed to finish second. But I did not just finish second, I

:36:04. > :36:08.finished second to a great athlete. This is what it is all about. I will

:36:08. > :36:22.go on holiday and get ready for the London Marathon. Jeptoo, beating

:36:22. > :36:31.Messer wreck Defar, who got a new Ethiopian record, in second place.

:36:31. > :36:35.Jeptoo, of Kenny, many congratulations, your first time

:36:35. > :36:41.doing the Great North Run and a very strong, fast victory? Today, I am

:36:41. > :36:47.very happy. It is an amazing day for me, because I did not know that I

:36:47. > :36:55.would run such an amazing time. And there is the result, David Wear, a

:36:55. > :37:11.couple of minutes outside his own course record, which he set back in

:37:11. > :37:12.2009. Shelly Woods leading the all British top trio in the women's

:37:12. > :37:15.race. 2009. Shelly Woods leading the all

:37:15. > :37:19.British top trio David, just past finish line, we know the conditions

:37:19. > :37:24.were tough, but was that as easy as it looked for you today? Not really.

:37:24. > :37:28.It was a good test to see where I am at at the moment. I surprised

:37:28. > :37:32.myself, as I have only been back pushing for a couple of weeks, so I

:37:32. > :37:36.am very happy with that sort of time. It was tough, some parts were

:37:36. > :37:41.tough, with the wind. But there was a lot of bits which helped you a

:37:41. > :37:46.lot. I was thankful the rain held off, because the roads were greasy,

:37:46. > :37:49.so we had to take it carefully on the first downhill, making sure the

:37:49. > :37:54.tyres were ready for the greasy roads. Shelly Woods, victory number

:37:54. > :37:59.five here in the north-east, so how does it compare? It is very foreign

:37:59. > :38:09.in, I am very happy. It was a tough day. I found it difficult. So, I

:38:09. > :38:11.just kept chasing the guys. There was not much international

:38:11. > :38:16.competition here this weekend, but the guys gave me enough competition

:38:17. > :38:23.to just try and chase them and go for a good time. You say a good

:38:23. > :38:27.time, you had the course record previously, it has been taken off

:38:27. > :38:31.you and you really wanted back, so I think we will see you a couple more

:38:31. > :38:36.times at least here. Most definitely, I would love to go under

:38:36. > :38:40.50 minutes on this course. My best ever is just seven seconds over

:38:40. > :38:45.that. The one year I took a break from this race, the American girl

:38:45. > :38:50.came over and smashed it. So, one year I will come back and I really

:38:50. > :38:53.think I can do that. A good day, with some good conditions, it will

:38:53. > :38:59.be within my reach. What a race between Mo Farah and Bekele, an

:38:59. > :39:06.incredible finish, very tight. But I am sure Mo will

:39:06. > :39:14.year's London Marathon. Now, it will be time for him to get a little bit

:39:14. > :39:29.of rest, unlike the other runners, who are still out on the course.

:39:29. > :39:40.I am running for the Meningitis Trust, and I am also competing

:39:40. > :40:01.against my brother-in-law. I had better let you go! Good luck!

:40:01. > :40:09.We thought we would get dressed up as toy soldiers. Every year, Wendy

:40:09. > :40:13.does our outfits. This is our third year doing it, and it is the best

:40:13. > :40:27.fun, a little bit hard work, but apart from that!

:40:27. > :40:33.Whoever the woman was at about mile 11th who had the sausage rolls, I

:40:33. > :40:37.Whoever the woman was at about mile know it is not exact to Mo Farah

:40:37. > :40:48.stuff, but it did it for me, I have to say.

:40:48. > :41:00.Hoping for a good time? Oh, sorry, you mean running time? I did not

:41:00. > :41:21.know what you were offering me then!

:41:22. > :41:28.It is good, except I fell on Thursday and I hurt my ribs, so I

:41:28. > :42:10.have to stop to breathe! Never done it before, so would you

:42:10. > :42:13.come back? Absolutely, definitely. I will have a couple of drinks tonight

:42:13. > :42:35.with you and Thomas, and life does not get better than that!

:42:35. > :42:45.I looked up and I saw five miles, and I thought it was only three

:42:45. > :43:29.miles. Where are we now? Halfway! OK, I had better get going.

:43:29. > :43:34.I just wanted to cry when I crossed the finishing line. I rang with my

:43:34. > :43:38.daughter, who has been there to support me the whole way. Neither of

:43:38. > :43:43.us have ever run before. It was brilliant. I will be back. That is

:43:43. > :43:47.it from the Bupa Great North Run for 2013. It has certainly been an

:43:47. > :43:50.it from the Bupa Great North Run for uplifting day. If you have been

:43:50. > :43:54.inspired by the stories of the masses, or even by that spectacular

:43:54. > :43:57.finish in the men's elite event, well hopefully, you will be

:43:57. > :43:59.encouraged to put on a pair of trainers and join us next year.

:43:59. > :44:05.Goodbye for now.
