:00:50. > :00:52.weekend of athletics on the BBC. Nearly eight hours of coverage

:00:53. > :00:58.across today and tomorrow, as we follow the fortunes of the British

:00:59. > :01:02.team in Braunschweig, Germany. This year's venue for that perennial

:01:03. > :01:06.favourite the European Athletics Team Champions. It's when individual

:01:07. > :01:10.glory takes a back seat. It's all about the team. It's all about the

:01:11. > :01:17.team here in the Salford studio. Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson,

:01:18. > :01:23.regulars alongside special guest Perri Shakes-Drayton. They finished

:01:24. > :01:41.third last year with great individual performances.

:01:42. > :01:55.COMMENTATOR: Away we go. Bang! Mo Farah, maximum points for Great

:01:56. > :02:10.Britain. Totally dominant. The crowd are on their feet, Shakes-Drayton

:02:11. > :02:19.will get in. He starts well. She's far above everybody's expectation, a

:02:20. > :02:24.wonderful effort. What a great run this is! Away goes Christine

:02:25. > :02:36.Ohuruogu. It's a big, big victory for Great Britain, maximum points.

:02:37. > :02:48.Great second place, well done. Perfectly judged by Williams.

:02:49. > :02:52.Brilliant performance from Jessica. The North East weather was

:02:53. > :02:56.apocalyptic at times but couldn't dampen a great British team

:02:57. > :03:01.performance. Good afternoon guys, we'll chat about your injury-rehab

:03:02. > :03:06.after that freak injury in Moscow shortly. First, your memories what

:03:07. > :03:09.have was a great weekend in Gateshead, especially being team

:03:10. > :03:12.captain. It was sunny on the day I was running, that's way remember! I

:03:13. > :03:13.put in a good performance, but I felt it was my

:03:14. > :03:17.put in a good performance, but I for the rest of the team. And for

:03:18. > :03:21.everyone just to follow and dot for the rest of the team. And for

:03:22. > :03:24.and get the -- do the best and get the maximum points for the team. You

:03:25. > :03:28.felt, I imagine, a great deal of pressure. It is a unique

:03:29. > :03:28.felt, I imagine, a great deal of the athletics calendar, isn't it?

:03:29. > :03:38.Definitely. The most think, the athletics calendar, isn't it?

:03:39. > :03:42.pressure for me, was giving the speech. I was so scared the night

:03:43. > :03:50.before. I hoped the speech would go well. You ran brilliantly, I have to

:03:51. > :03:55.say. We looked to you, nice to see you on the hurdles, but you had such

:03:56. > :04:00.a good 400 season that year to top it off there was fantastic. That

:04:01. > :04:07.weekend is about galvanising. You look to your stars. You look to the

:04:08. > :04:10.people that we know are the bankers, the possible point scorers,

:04:11. > :04:17.high-point scorers and they bring the team with they. -- them. It is a

:04:18. > :04:20.special pressure. This gets you. Especially when the team members

:04:21. > :04:24.before you have been doing so remarkably well. When some of the

:04:25. > :04:28.youngsters that, perhaps are not kind of expected to deliver the

:04:29. > :04:31.performances go one or two places above what we first thought was

:04:32. > :04:36.going to happen to them, then the real pressure is on. I certainly

:04:37. > :04:41.recognise that added pressure. It was third for the team one year ago.

:04:42. > :04:44.This time round, perhaps not the strongest British team. Here's are

:04:45. > :04:46.the thoughts of the performance director.

:04:47. > :04:50.It's the European team championships, we don't get the

:04:51. > :04:54.chance to come together and compete in this way, it's a big deal. I'm

:04:55. > :04:57.really excited with that combination of those who've done it, some of the

:04:58. > :05:01.people who've done it many times, and those who this is their first

:05:02. > :05:06.opportunity at a senior level to show what they've got. It's a great

:05:07. > :05:10.buzz. We looked at the calendar going forward, I spoke to the chief

:05:11. > :05:13.executive an the chairmen and we said, you know, is it OK to look to,

:05:14. > :05:26.in part, use the European Championships as a one-off, not

:05:27. > :05:31.going into the future, as a kind of deelopmental type of event. We're

:05:32. > :05:35.here to score as pane points as we can. We are here to finish as high

:05:36. > :05:40.as we can. It's unusual to get the opportunity. But we're realistic. We

:05:41. > :05:45.will know at the end of the competition. Denise, you sense there

:05:46. > :05:48.from Neil's words that really quite a low priority this time around for

:05:49. > :05:52.the European Athletics Team Champions. I think with a season

:05:53. > :05:55.that is quite congested for the British athletes, it's a long

:05:56. > :06:00.season. It's full. Commonwealth Games, swiftly followed by the

:06:01. > :06:03.European Championships, you know, the European Athletics Team

:06:04. > :06:07.Champions gets squashed. I think there are notable absentees making

:06:08. > :06:12.the choice not to compete here, but that does give an opportunity for

:06:13. > :06:16.the youngsters. We have 11 first-time senior caps for this

:06:17. > :06:22.competition. It gives them an opportunity to get in the mix, to

:06:23. > :06:26.feel what it's like rubbing against other British stars. Developmental,

:06:27. > :06:30.yes, but at the end of the day, competition is competition and

:06:31. > :06:34.athletes always are searching for the next level to step up to. Colin,

:06:35. > :06:39.do you think this is the best competition to blood young athletes

:06:40. > :06:42.in? Given the pressure we've talked about, you don't walk off the track

:06:43. > :06:47.and say oh, well, that was a bad day. You feel bad because you've let

:06:48. > :06:52.people down. It's a tough ask. It is, but as Neil said, they've got a

:06:53. > :06:56.realistic vision of what can be achieved at these team

:06:57. > :07:00.championships. If the hierarchy of British athletics make it clear to

:07:01. > :07:03.the youngsters that we'd like you to perform to the best of your

:07:04. > :07:07.abilities, but you're developing, you're building your whole career.

:07:08. > :07:10.I'm not taking about one-off competitions, it's about careers.

:07:11. > :07:14.When we have such a limited amount of time of such type of competition

:07:15. > :07:18.at this level, then you can see how it's important to understand that

:07:19. > :07:29.where these type of competitions fit in the ical en-- calendar. What was

:07:30. > :07:33.your approach to this competition? Where it the European Athletics Team

:07:34. > :07:36.Champions fit? As we can see, I done an event that wasn't my event at the

:07:37. > :07:41.time. It was an opportunity for me to do a 400 metres at a high level

:07:42. > :07:45.and try to produce a good time. That was the goal and that's what

:07:46. > :07:50.happened on that day. Experience s, no matter whether they're good or

:07:51. > :07:53.bad, are part of athletics. Have you to have them. So if the youngsters

:07:54. > :07:58.don't quite get to their best, they will have to work out why. They will

:07:59. > :08:01.work out whether they're overawed by the situation and they'll deal with.

:08:02. > :08:08.It that's athletics. That's sport. It is so different from everything

:08:09. > :08:11.else. Even as a top-level athletes, when you're competing in the

:08:12. > :08:15.European Championships, you did feel different from everything else.

:08:16. > :08:19.Athletes are tested. When it comes to someone like Jessica Judd last

:08:20. > :08:25.year, it was a massive competition for her. She was up against some of

:08:26. > :08:30.the best 800 metre runners at that time and she shone. That set up her

:08:31. > :08:35.whole career and her own personal expectations. She knew what she was

:08:36. > :08:39.doing, still doing exams, but she was enjoying athletics. She

:08:40. > :08:43.realises, hang on, I can compete at this level. It made a huge

:08:44. > :08:46.difference. Yeah, it gave her confidence as well. She went in

:08:47. > :08:52.there feeling like, you know, these girls are older than me, stronger

:08:53. > :08:58.than me, but Jess went on and delivered and she left them know she

:08:59. > :09:00.was Jess and she wasn't playing that Not the day. Strongest British team

:09:01. > :09:11.perhaps but plenty to look forward to. Here's what's coming up: Olympic

:09:12. > :09:19.long jump champion Greg Rutherford leads the British challenge.

:09:20. > :09:31.Scottishage let AelidhChild is in the 400 metre hurdles. Adam Gemili

:09:32. > :09:37.and co are in the relay. And hear from the bright new star of British

:09:38. > :09:41.athletics as she prepares for the Commonwealth Games.

:09:42. > :10:04.Let's look at the time table. You can pick your favourites

:10:05. > :10:12.Time for our first action now. It happened before we came on air, the

:10:13. > :10:17.women's 100m. Rachael Johncock competing forking Great Britain --

:10:18. > :10:21.competing for Great Britain. Steve Cram describes the action.

:10:22. > :10:25.Johncock gets out of the blocks really well. The Russian in lane

:10:26. > :10:35.three going well. Rachael Johncock leading for Great Britain. Johncock

:10:36. > :10:39.is going to win it. Great run. Into a pretty strong headwind. She won't

:10:40. > :10:43.be that bothered about the times. The two races are combined to give

:10:44. > :10:46.the overall place. That's a good win for the lady who's going to be

:10:47. > :10:49.representing Wales in the Commonwealth Games. Although the

:10:50. > :10:54.time's not that quick, we can really only wait to see what happens in the

:10:55. > :10:58.second race. That was a good race from Rachael Johncock. Yes, it was.

:10:59. > :11:02.The women's sprinting scene in Britain at the moment is buoyant.

:11:03. > :11:08.Johncock ranked only eighth nationally in the 100m so far this

:11:09. > :11:12.season. Got away to a good start. The Russian was trying to go with

:11:13. > :11:19.her at this stage. Surprising to see a Russian in the B race in this

:11:20. > :11:26.event. Even she was outrun for second place by Busk of Sweden.

:11:27. > :11:30.Rachael Johncock looked nervous before the start but had a delighted

:11:31. > :11:32.smile by the end of it. Confirmation of the result into that very strong

:11:33. > :11:57.head wind there. 11. 77 the time to beat from the

:11:58. > :12:00.first race. Samuel in great form this year. It's a good start, assume

:12:01. > :12:17.assume is the best out that's much quicker than the first

:12:18. > :12:21.race. Soumare, who started the season pretty slowly had one or two

:12:22. > :12:25.indifferent races. In the last couple of weeks she's coming to the

:12:26. > :12:30.fore again. The French woman rounding nicely into good form this

:12:31. > :12:36.year. 11. 18 was her best coming into this. All about maximum points

:12:37. > :12:40.for France and she delivered them. Sailer lost that half a meter at the

:12:41. > :12:44.start out of the blocks and never got it back. Once again, Samuel,

:12:45. > :12:50.this talented youngster from the Netherlands, doesn't get a win.

:12:51. > :12:55.Soumare looks good. Once she got away well, that 200 metre strength

:12:56. > :12:59.we know so well from the past. She's a former European champion. She got

:13:00. > :13:03.away well here as she did in Oslo, ten days ago, when she won there in

:13:04. > :13:08.surprise fashion. No surprise here, though. She was forecast to win.

:13:09. > :13:12.Strong from the start to the finish. Eventually Sailer run out of it in

:13:13. > :13:14.the end by Samuel in second place. Confirmation of that winning time,

:13:15. > :13:22.11. 35 seconds. Samuel much Confirmation of that winning time,

:13:23. > :13:27.of her 22 years of age, 11. 12 seconds her lifetime best. No match

:13:28. > :13:31.here for Soumare of France. That's a good win for one of the best of the

:13:32. > :13:39.French athletes in a strong French team here over the next two days.

:13:40. > :13:45.Interesting that yesterday there was a warm up race she ran fast, maybe

:13:46. > :13:47.she should have gone in the 100, but maximum points for France.

:13:48. > :13:51.Yes it's all about weekend, it's all about the team. If

:13:52. > :13:52.you're new to the European Athletics Team Champions, here's

:13:53. > :14:01.you're new to the European Athletics athletes to explain how it works.

:14:02. > :14:12.The points system is pretty easy. 12 points goes to the team that wins

:14:13. > :14:18.each event. 11 points for second place. Down to one point for

:14:19. > :14:20.each event. 11 points for second place. But a disqualification for a

:14:21. > :14:28.false start... place. But a disqualification for a

:14:29. > :14:35.register ah, tloi or a jump... Means zero points for your team. Men's and

:14:36. > :14:39.women's points are combined for a team score. The overall winner is

:14:40. > :14:43.the team that scores the most points. Sprints and relays are

:14:44. > :14:47.staged over two heats, with points decided on who runs the quickest

:14:48. > :14:50.times. Middle and long-distance races are run as one straight race.

:14:51. > :14:54.times. Middle and long-distance Every event and every athlete

:14:55. > :14:56.matters. Because it's not about the number of events won, it's about the

:14:57. > :15:08.number of points for the team. They have all learned their lines

:15:09. > :15:11.very well!, statistician has been working through the night,

:15:12. > :15:15.very well!, statistician has been working through the trying to fathom

:15:16. > :15:21.how this might pan out. These are his projected schools.

:15:22. > :15:31.Germany on home soil, lots of European champions for them. Russia

:15:32. > :15:36.have won it for the last three or four years, since Germany won the

:15:37. > :15:40.first one. Great Britain in fifth place.

:15:41. > :15:52.What do you think? Colin? I knew you would start with me! It is the

:15:53. > :15:55.European Team Championships, there will always be surprise performances

:15:56. > :16:01.and people that do not live up to expectations. He has kind of got it

:16:02. > :16:06.right, because the strength of the team is there or thereabouts. We

:16:07. > :16:10.know Germany will be on home turf, they want to produce an outstanding

:16:11. > :16:18.performance. Russia is always consistent. What will be interesting

:16:19. > :16:22.is Poland, how they will fit in. They have not got the Commonwealth

:16:23. > :16:31.Games, so this is a nice test to see where they fit in. Perry, last year,

:16:32. > :16:39.was there a sheet of paper given out for all of the athletes to look at

:16:40. > :16:49.with their projected schools? Locally, that stopped, because a

:16:50. > :16:57.certain manager, the head coach had changed, so that added pressure

:16:58. > :17:02.which is not needed, they had got rid of it. We just went out there

:17:03. > :17:08.and we were told to enjoy it and do the best for the team. You mentioned

:17:09. > :17:13.Charles, but it was not his idea. I remember back to the days of Frank

:17:14. > :17:21.in the 80s. We all knew what we were expected to get. Reduced to have --

:17:22. > :17:26.we used to know what was expected of us. If you were predicted a certain

:17:27. > :17:30.amount of points, you knew you had to make a difference. That is all

:17:31. > :17:37.you can do. Some people call it pressure, some people say... Charles

:17:38. > :17:42.was about, 12 points for you, you must come away with 12 points. But

:17:43. > :17:48.Neil has a different way, he has a different attitude. He looks at the

:17:49. > :17:53.whole cycle, we are heading for the Olympics, we want to see the team

:17:54. > :17:59.grow. I do not think it hurts to know where you are, because it can

:18:00. > :18:06.only lift your morale, to say, I am better than that. During the years,

:18:07. > :18:10.we have had some great performances in this meet. Over the course of the

:18:11. > :18:24.weekend, we will look back at some of the finest moments.

:18:25. > :18:37.There is no more determined athlete in world track and field running.

:18:38. > :18:46.The crowd rises to a salute, an outstanding performance. The British

:18:47. > :18:52.record is 14: 45, she was the just outside, but a wonderful run. Paula

:18:53. > :18:54.Radcliffe wins the 5000 metres for Great Britain, and wins it

:18:55. > :19:06.convincingly. Paula Radcliffe winning in Paris,

:19:07. > :19:11.with commentary from David Coleman. We can head had to Braunschweig,

:19:12. > :19:22.Paula Radcliffe is part of our commentary team. Your memories of

:19:23. > :19:29.that race, Paula? Special memories, but is often seem to happen to me in

:19:30. > :19:35.this meet, I remember going out into the 5000 metres knowing that I had

:19:36. > :19:40.to get maximum points to give us a chance of staying up in the

:19:41. > :19:45.competition. We have talked a lot about that pressure of expectation,

:19:46. > :19:48.performing for the team, but Terry -- but Perry tells us they have

:19:49. > :19:57.taken away the predictions. What do you make of that? Was it ever about

:19:58. > :20:02.that? It is about going out and ensuring you give it your best shot

:20:03. > :20:06.and that you do yourself justice and do the best that you can for the

:20:07. > :20:11.team. Every athlete going out there is motivated to try to do that. They

:20:12. > :20:16.know if they have performed above or below expectations. More so in a

:20:17. > :20:20.team competition, when you perform below expectation, you feel it, and

:20:21. > :20:29.you feel some response ability. Steve, this is a developmental team.

:20:30. > :20:36.I do not know if you heard his interview, but he was low-key about

:20:37. > :20:43.this as a competition. I agree with him, you have been making all the

:20:44. > :20:49.relevant points about where this fits into a busy season, the chances

:20:50. > :20:52.for some young names coming in, but the trials next week are important,

:20:53. > :20:58.Commonwealth games selection has happened, and then the European

:20:59. > :21:01.Championships. I fully agree with Neil, at the end of the year, we

:21:02. > :21:05.will not look back on this competition with any great

:21:06. > :21:09.relevance. Let's hope for a good weekend and see some good individual

:21:10. > :21:17.performances and that we do as well as we can. Talking about this as a

:21:18. > :21:20.stage for the young athletes, it is a unique pressure, is it an ideal

:21:21. > :21:33.environment for blooding new talent? If you look at somebody like

:21:34. > :21:36.Charlie Grice in the 1500, against a strong field, this is a good

:21:37. > :21:42.opportunity for him to test himself in a tactical race, the sort of race

:21:43. > :21:45.that would be a semifinal in a World Championships. If you look at it in

:21:46. > :21:49.that sense, it is a great opportunity. I would not worry too

:21:50. > :21:55.much and at times and distances, it is about letting people in this type

:21:56. > :21:57.of environment. In some of those tactical races, they can learn a

:21:58. > :22:01.lot. We will hear lots more from you over

:22:02. > :22:06.because of the afternoon. The first live race will be the men's 400

:22:07. > :22:15.meter hurdles, and in previous years, we have seen Britons come out

:22:16. > :22:20.and get maximum points. Dai Greene is not here, it has been a tough

:22:21. > :22:21.time for him. It has been traumatic. It is awful when you know you have

:22:22. > :22:25.been doing very well, a lot It is awful when you know you have

:22:26. > :22:29.confidence, winning titles, It is awful when you know you have

:22:30. > :22:35.very fast, and then all of a sudden your body is letting you down. There

:22:36. > :22:41.was one stage with him, he caught a virus, and that set him back. As

:22:42. > :22:44.soon as it was clear, he ended up getting a hernia, and then it was

:22:45. > :22:51.his hamstring, then his calves. Perry, you know this, the sense of

:22:52. > :22:55.consistency is what you need, especially in this event, you need

:22:56. > :22:58.to have the endurance work behind you and the technical stuff. He has

:22:59. > :23:03.to have the endurance work behind suffered from the fact that he has

:23:04. > :23:10.not been able to put the layers of the foundations on. Richard Yates

:23:11. > :23:18.stepping in, a very good athlete in his own right, he will start very

:23:19. > :23:25.well. Yes. I am surprised that Nile Flannery was not there. Maybe

:23:26. > :23:29.training was more important for him. He has been running superbly, very

:23:30. > :23:34.impressive performances. The lease, we may have seen a slightly stronger

:23:35. > :23:40.team, had the trials been two weeks away, rather than a week away.

:23:41. > :23:45.Absolutely, a lot of pressure to perform at the trials. We have seen

:23:46. > :23:49.people that have been absent at the trials previously and not gain

:23:50. > :23:53.selection, because they have not been there. There is an emphasis on

:23:54. > :23:55.making sure you are there and ready, because nobody wants to leave

:23:56. > :24:01.anything to chance that the selectors might have caused not to

:24:02. > :24:06.pick you. This year in particular, athletes want to compete, it is part

:24:07. > :24:10.of their preparation, so they are having to make the choices that suit

:24:11. > :24:15.them, to make sure that they are ready, it is their programmes, they

:24:16. > :24:19.have to schedule it correctly. The trials are for the European

:24:20. > :24:22.Championships. If you were competing, what would your priority

:24:23. > :24:27.be, the Commonwealth Games or the European Championships? I would not

:24:28. > :24:38.prioritise, I would just want to win gold medals. If you are a world

:24:39. > :24:42.junior athlete, you can not prepare for the European Championships, you

:24:43. > :24:49.cannot do both, because of the timetable. You do have to make the

:24:50. > :24:57.selections and you do have to make a choice, perhaps. I did both in both

:24:58. > :25:01.years, and for a heptathlete, it is tough, but it is not easy. What

:25:02. > :25:08.would your priority have been, Perry? I would want to do both. You

:25:09. > :25:11.always want to have the opportunity to represent your country. I have

:25:12. > :25:18.never done the Commonwealth Games. to represent your country. I have

:25:19. > :25:22.did the Europeans in 2010, I did a surprise performance and came home

:25:23. > :25:27.with a medal. I was shattered, so there was no Commonwealth Games for

:25:28. > :25:33.me. I have missed it again this year. The European Championships

:25:34. > :25:35.would be more important, but with the Commonwealth games being in

:25:36. > :25:42.Glasgow, that is an incredible opportunity. For the people from the

:25:43. > :25:48.smaller regions in the UK, representing Wales, it is very

:25:49. > :25:52.important to us to be at the Commonwealth Games. There are

:25:53. > :25:57.limited occasions when you can do that on a global stage. For me, it

:25:58. > :26:02.was always important to get their and where the Dragon proudly. I was

:26:03. > :26:06.lucky enough that I could win a gold medal. That meant a lot to the

:26:07. > :26:12.country. That is why the Commonwealth Games was going to be

:26:13. > :26:15.as important to me. Not just for the Welsh athletes, but Chris Tomlinson

:26:16. > :26:20.has said that it is all about the Commonwealth Games. He will see what

:26:21. > :26:27.he has got left once that has happened. I can understand that. You

:26:28. > :26:33.have to make sure that you are ready. Once you have made the

:26:34. > :26:40.decision, go for it. We set our first live action.

:26:41. > :26:44.A chance to get off to a good start for the British team on the track

:26:45. > :26:50.for Richard Yates. for the British team on the track

:26:51. > :26:59.on the inside. Yoan Decimus for France. His lifetime best would take

:27:00. > :27:09.him close to winning clear, in swirling, windy conditions.

:27:10. > :27:18.Richard Yates ranked third in the UK at this stage of the season. He is

:27:19. > :27:27.behind Flannery. As well as Rhys Williams. One of the biggest threats

:27:28. > :27:32.here, Denis Kudryavtsev. Just 22, his lifetime best was set this

:27:33. > :27:38.season, it is the fastest in the field in terms of lifetime bests.

:27:39. > :27:44.This man upset by Green last year, beaten into second I Silvio

:27:45. > :27:49.Schirrmeister of Germany. He is forecast to finish third in this

:27:50. > :28:00.race, behind Denis Kudryavtsev and Richard Yates. On the outside, the

:28:01. > :28:05.Czech Republic athlete. Six athletes in each of two races in all events

:28:06. > :28:13.up to and including 400 metres, based largely on season best times.

:28:14. > :28:16.Richard Yates, according to our statistician, should bring home in

:28:17. > :28:22.11 points in second place for the British team, but can he step up on

:28:23. > :28:30.that? Silvio Schirrmeister caused a shock by beating Dai Greene in

:28:31. > :28:35.Gateshead last year. Richard Yates, 49.06 seconds, his lifetime best,

:28:36. > :28:40.stretching back six years, to the run-up to the ageing Olympics, he

:28:41. > :28:42.was unlucky not to be selected. He missed out in similar circumstances

:28:43. > :28:51.for the World Championships last year.

:28:52. > :29:03.They were held down for a long time, time for strong mind. Denis

:29:04. > :29:12.Kudryavtsev outside Richard Yates. A slight stutter into the third hurdle

:29:13. > :29:13.for Richard Yates. On his outside, the Russian athlete, who has gone

:29:14. > :29:21.off quickly. Silvio Schirrmeister is also in

:29:22. > :29:38.contention. Denis Kudryavtsev, the fastest on

:29:39. > :29:43.form this season, justifying that. It is Denis Kudryavtsev who wins for

:29:44. > :29:47.Russia, a huge cheer from the crowd for Silvio Schirrmeister in second

:29:48. > :29:53.place. Richard Yates comes through in third place. Windy conditions,

:29:54. > :29:57.that is a very impressive performance by the 22-year-old

:29:58. > :30:02.Russian Denis Kudryavtsev. It promises more for the future. He

:30:03. > :30:06.could be a real threat for the European Championships later in the

:30:07. > :30:12.season if Dai Greene can get himself fit enough. Silvio Schirrmeister in

:30:13. > :30:15.second place. Having relegated Dai Greene to that position a year ago,

:30:16. > :30:23.a very strong performance by the young Russian, Denis Kudryavtsev. I

:30:24. > :30:27.felt as though Rick didn't get into the race early enough. Down the back

:30:28. > :30:35.straight, he stuttered into the third hurdle. The Russian got out so

:30:36. > :30:40.quickly, Schirrmeister as well. He ran that big personal best against

:30:41. > :30:43.Dai Greene. He saved his best for this race. Some names can be really

:30:44. > :30:48.strong in the home straight. I thought he might have put the German

:30:49. > :30:51.under more pressure. Rick is coming back into the sort of form to make

:30:52. > :30:55.the European team. I think he'll be a little disappointed not to have

:30:56. > :30:59.got in the top two there. The Russian good, very, very good, an

:31:00. > :31:04.improving athlete. He will be a danger come the European

:31:05. > :31:11.Championships in Zurich. It's maximum points for Russia. A little

:31:12. > :31:29.down on what we would have expected. So confirmation of the win and time.

:31:30. > :31:36.Well, there's no smile there, Rick. Third place finish. Talk me through

:31:37. > :31:41.the race. Yeah, it wasn't my best race. My legs didn't really feel

:31:42. > :31:49.they had the energy to kick on after hurdle five. It wasn't really a

:31:50. > :31:53.competition I planned to do, so the main focus is for the Commonwealth

:31:54. > :31:58.Games. Did you commit properly over the first 200? What would be your

:31:59. > :32:04.analysis so soon after the race? Maybe not, no. I probably could have

:32:05. > :32:08.gone out fasterment It's one of those things. -- gone out faster.

:32:09. > :32:13.It's one of those things. It wasn't an amazing race for Due feel me. The

:32:14. > :32:19.pressure, the first male on the track today? Of course, every time

:32:20. > :32:22.you put on a Great Britain vest, there's pressure. You have to enjoy

:32:23. > :32:29.it as well. These occasions don't come along too often, so yeah, it

:32:30. > :32:35.was all right. Hi fun out there. I had fun out Well done there. Today.

:32:36. > :32:40.The Commonwealth Games will be my aim, trials next week for Europeans,

:32:41. > :32:44.so there's enough on the horizon. After trials I will need to go back

:32:45. > :32:49.no a block of training, because we had to qualify for Commonwealths

:32:50. > :32:52.early this year. A strange season. But, yeah, there's a lot to aim for

:32:53. > :32:55.now for the rest of the season. Best of luck.

:32:56. > :32:55.Thank you very much. Cheers. See you.

:32:56. > :33:01.STUDIO: you.

:33:02. > :33:06.there. Certainly disappointed I think with his performance. Yeah,

:33:07. > :33:10.when you're marked down for a certain level of performance, which

:33:11. > :33:13.was second place there, to slightly lose it and finish in third, can you

:33:14. > :33:18.understand why he's a little disappointed. He will have been

:33:19. > :33:21.looking at people maybe accusing him for not being there to represent

:33:22. > :33:28.Great Britain. You always want to prove a point. With the 400m hurdles

:33:29. > :33:33.they prefer a strong tail wind down the back straight so they can relax

:33:34. > :33:36.and not fight into the wind. Unfortunately, here, I think because

:33:37. > :33:40.we've seen it in the 100s, it's blustery. Can you go from a minus

:33:41. > :33:45.two, that means there's a lot of head wind in your face here, the

:33:46. > :33:49.final stage of the event or have it nearly still. A little bit the luck

:33:50. > :33:53.of the draw, I think. It was a strong performance from the Russian.

:33:54. > :33:57.We know he's young. He's exciting. He's enjoying his running. Its been

:33:58. > :34:00.a flawless preparation for him, which is good to see. It makes it

:34:01. > :34:03.difficult for our boys, though, going into the European

:34:04. > :34:07.Championships. Because these people who are not at the Commonwealth

:34:08. > :34:12.Games will be flying come the European Championships. I'm hoping

:34:13. > :34:16.some of our guys won't be Reece Williams fatigued. Is the defending

:34:17. > :34:21.champion. Talk about the win there and how difficult it is to hurdle in

:34:22. > :34:26.the wind. How did you find it? You do not want wind when you're doing

:34:27. > :34:32.hurdles. Especially 400m hurdles, the race is difficult as it is. So

:34:33. > :34:36.having the wind, I mean, your hurdling is probably going to be a

:34:37. > :34:39.bit messy. You'll be jumping up in the sky. You know you don't want to

:34:40. > :34:43.be doing that. You will be stuttering to the hurdles. That's

:34:44. > :34:48.another thing you don't want to do. The race was tougher for him than it

:34:49. > :34:51.usually would be. Can you tell from his interview as well, he was asked

:34:52. > :34:54.a certain question and he was somewhere else. I know the feeling.

:34:55. > :35:00.When you get across the line, you're out of breath and it's tough. You're

:35:01. > :35:03.somewhere else. He talked about not feeling he had it in his legs,

:35:04. > :35:08.perhaps tightness because of the pressure? Maybe. You just don't know

:35:09. > :35:11.again where the athletes are in their preparation. He said he's had

:35:12. > :35:14.to qualify early for the Commonwealth Games. That means he

:35:15. > :35:18.had to get sharp at the beginning of the season. He might be coming off

:35:19. > :35:22.quite a heavy training block. Those things you have to take into

:35:23. > :35:26.account, but you see by his attitude there that he was very disappointed

:35:27. > :35:29.and obviously, with your body doesn't respond when you need it to,

:35:30. > :35:33.it's just a horrible feeling. That should be a great event to watch in

:35:34. > :35:38.the trials next weekend. It's on the BBC. Now men's 100m shortly, Danny

:35:39. > :35:48.Talbot is going for Britain. We will look at what was an amazing

:35:49. > :35:53.This took us all by surprise. I This took us all by surprise. I

:35:54. > :35:58.think it's fair to say. He ran well in the heat, 10. 19 in the heats to

:35:59. > :36:03.qualify for this final. Lock how his performance, it's a really mature

:36:04. > :36:10.performance. He took on Richard Thompson from Trinidad and Tobago

:36:11. > :36:17.who is a quality sprinter. He's gone under 9. 9 on many occasions. What

:36:18. > :36:20.he glanced over, when he saw the winning time was sub-ten and

:36:21. > :36:25.realised how close he was to Richard, he must have thought, "I

:36:26. > :36:31.could have gone under ten seconds." A really exciting time and I hope he

:36:32. > :36:35.can back that up with more sub-ten performances. Good conditions, under

:36:36. > :36:39.the ten. You never You've seen know. These guys training, doing your

:36:40. > :36:44.rehab, what was the buzz like after he ran that? He's been exciting down

:36:45. > :36:52.at Lee Valley. A lot of media interest. You will see him strutting

:36:53. > :37:00.his stuff. It's good. Hopefully he will repeat that performance. When

:37:01. > :37:03.it does matter as well. It's good and well run gooding times but you

:37:04. > :37:07.need to performance when it -- perform when it really matters.

:37:08. > :37:12.Absolutely, next weekend... It really matters. With the trials. He

:37:13. > :37:15.hasn't been selected for the Commonwealth Games. That performance

:37:16. > :37:20.came afterwards. We will talk about that later. Yeah, the Europeans for

:37:21. > :37:25.him, all his eggs in one It real basket. Ly is. It's exciting.

:37:26. > :37:28.British men's sprinting and the women's very exciting. I'm really,

:37:29. > :37:34.I'm looking forward to the trials. I think a lot of people, for the first

:37:35. > :37:37.time in a long time, we can be sitting there thinking, which one of

:37:38. > :37:42.these young pretenders are going to reign supreme? Because any one of

:37:43. > :37:47.them could. He's looking good. It's the first time I've seen him run.

:37:48. > :37:55.He's tidy. He looks strong. CJ as he's called to his friends and to us

:37:56. > :38:01.now, he's coached by the coach of Greg Rutherford. It was a little bit

:38:02. > :38:06.of a surprise when Rutherford announced he would be coached by

:38:07. > :38:11.this coach. Here's Greg's thoughts. He's a very, very special athlete.

:38:12. > :38:18.Somebody that, well, I see day in, day out. Around him as well, we have

:38:19. > :38:22.Sean and Tobias an a load of other young guys who are pushing each

:38:23. > :38:25.other in every training session they're doing. Because of that

:38:26. > :38:28.they're running exceptionally fast. What CJ has done at 9. 96 is out of

:38:29. > :38:35.this world and 20 years of age. What CJ has done at 9. 96 is out of

:38:36. > :38:37.doing things that a lot of people would expect talented young people

:38:38. > :38:42.to do, but for whatever reason not from Britain. We're building a

:38:43. > :38:46.generation of top sprinters, himself, Adam and others doing well.

:38:47. > :38:50.From my point of view, in the group, what a brilliant place to turn up

:38:51. > :38:54.and train with. It's one of the best sprint groups in the country that my

:38:55. > :38:58.old bones get to run against and still maintain some of my speed. So,

:38:59. > :39:01.it's a great training aid, a great environment to be in and all

:39:02. > :39:08.surrounded with a fantastic young coach, who is doing a really stellar

:39:09. > :39:13.job, really good job. Yeah, Jonas an early contender for Coach of the

:39:14. > :39:21.Year. 9. 96 for Ujakpor and -- Ujay and 8. 51 for Rutherford. Greg has

:39:22. > :39:24.hit the nail on the head, what a stellar year he's had. It's good to

:39:25. > :39:28.see. All of us really know the importance of having a good, strong

:39:29. > :39:33.group who all have the same objectives in mind and have good

:39:34. > :39:37.ambition. If you have that and you're rubbing shoulders on a daily

:39:38. > :39:40.basis, it can only elevate your performances. We're seeing that.

:39:41. > :39:44.There isn't, would you say there's a lot of support for the young coaches

:39:45. > :39:51.coming up through the system? I mean, it just seems to me that he's

:39:52. > :39:54.managed to Val vannise -- galvanise, he's doing great things, but not

:39:55. > :39:58.many people have heard of him. He's still building his way. I hope he

:39:59. > :40:03.can maintain this form with his athletes because it very much is a

:40:04. > :40:08.two-way process. Athlete does well and the coach gets recognise. He

:40:09. > :40:10.goes We mention on. Ed that Commonwealth Games selection for the

:40:11. > :40:14.sprint, which is controversial. We can look now at who has been

:40:15. > :40:31.selected for the England Commonwealth Games sprint team.

:40:32. > :40:37.Perhaps James Ellington the only one who might go for the European

:40:38. > :40:40.Championships wa. Do you make of the selections? Danny as well is

:40:41. > :40:44.selected in the 200m. He won a bronze medal at the European

:40:45. > :40:47.Championships in 2012. That championships remember was hid an

:40:48. > :40:51.way because of the London Olympics. For Danny to come back with a medal

:40:52. > :40:56.at the European Championships was important, it announces you on an

:40:57. > :41:00.international stage yet again. I think there's a maturity in some

:41:01. > :41:04.ways, but it's a strange selection, when you look at it and thinking,

:41:05. > :41:08.gosh they've left some of the real speed merchants behind, which is

:41:09. > :41:15.going to be interesting next week at the trials. I think Ujay missed the

:41:16. > :41:23.selection deadline. His 9. 96 came after. By a week. James is flying in

:41:24. > :41:29.training, supposedliment I don't want to say anything. Gemeli saying

:41:30. > :41:34.he's going well. The Jamaicans are holding off their selection. Why not

:41:35. > :41:37.England hold off as well? I would have liked to have seen a different

:41:38. > :41:43.selection, but obviously the selection date is set. It's already

:41:44. > :41:49.been announced on the calendar months ago. But you look forward and

:41:50. > :41:54.see the calendar and see it's busy. Maybe we should give our athletes

:41:55. > :41:56.the maximum opportunities, time, in order to qualify for the

:41:57. > :42:00.Commonwealth Games. It hasn't gone that way this year. There are some

:42:01. > :42:04.athletes that are frustrated out there that would have liked a little

:42:05. > :42:07.bit more time, so you can group your training when you're actually at

:42:08. > :42:13.your peak, which is mid-season. You want to be at your best towards the

:42:14. > :42:16.mid-season and pre-championships. If you've been injured, and the

:42:17. > :42:20.selection has gone, you've got no chance. Sometimes it feels with

:42:21. > :42:23.selection policy it's the cart before the horse, it's more about

:42:24. > :42:27.the policy than the athlete. Absolutely. It has been quoted that

:42:28. > :42:30.they've made the selection for administrative purposes because it's

:42:31. > :42:34.a big team. I just think that's really not what you want to hear.

:42:35. > :42:38.You want to be thinking - we are doing what we can to make sure we

:42:39. > :42:41.take the best English or British team, no matter where you are,

:42:42. > :42:45.forward. It hasn't quite worked out that way. But most of the it, I

:42:46. > :42:50.think is OK. The selection is right. The team is good. But with 100m, I

:42:51. > :42:57.think they might have, may get it wrong. The man running the 100m here

:42:58. > :43:01.is Danny Talbot. Let's hear from him now. My training is going really

:43:02. > :43:05.well. When training is going well, you want to race well. Fortunately

:43:06. > :43:10.I've been lucky to be in good races and have nice conditions and put

:43:11. > :43:16.down some fast times. I've been able to run personal bets. I'm looking

:43:17. > :43:20.forward to this weekend -- personal bests. It's a great chance to enjoy

:43:21. > :43:25.it and try to go along with everyone else. Last weekend when CJ ran

:43:26. > :43:28.amazing, I think the day before people were running well in the

:43:29. > :43:31.British league, I kind of knew on Monday, I had a good feeling that

:43:32. > :43:33.British league, I kind of knew on there was going to be - I could

:43:34. > :43:36.carry on the good momentum from everyone else. When everyone's

:43:37. > :43:40.running well, everyone just lifts their performance. Hopefully we can

:43:41. > :43:43.do that this weekend and go into the trials and the trials will be good

:43:44. > :43:47.for everyone. I don't feel any extra pressure to run faster, just try to

:43:48. > :43:52.enjoy it and go with everyone else. I love the way the athletes try to

:43:53. > :43:56.play it down. "I don't feel any pressure to run fast." You know he's

:43:57. > :44:00.scared on the line, don't you! Of course, you want to run well. I

:44:01. > :44:05.mean, when you see competitors running well, especially, I mean,

:44:06. > :44:09.talk about on the English stage as well and the world-class stage, it

:44:10. > :44:13.is a kick up the bum. You need to get your act together. When I am on

:44:14. > :44:17.the line against them, I'm going to put you to the test. That is the

:44:18. > :44:20.attitude you should have. It's good, when you see other people doing

:44:21. > :44:24.well, it is added pressure. You're thinking, oh, especially if you

:44:25. > :44:35.haven't run as fast, I start questioning Chris. I remember one

:44:36. > :44:38.time, I think me and Elidh ran 55 seconds and I hadn't done that at

:44:39. > :44:44.that time. I looked at Chris and said, "What are we going to do? We

:44:45. > :44:51.had to push each other. It's good. It's healthy, competitive. Denise,

:44:52. > :44:55.for Danny, it's a big opportunity, double edged, if he doesn't run

:44:56. > :44:58.well, going into the trials next weekend, even more pressure. It is

:44:59. > :45:01.important for him to maintain momentum. He's ran well over 200

:45:02. > :45:04.already this year. He's been selected for the Commonwealth Games.

:45:05. > :45:13.He will want to do well at the trials. Yes, he has to keep

:45:14. > :45:20.building, keep focusing and not get overwrought. He has been doing good

:45:21. > :45:27.training, he is in good shape, just compete and make the most of it.

:45:28. > :45:34.Let's head back to Braunschweig. Done at all but going in the second

:45:35. > :45:36.heat. It is a tough hate for him, these

:45:37. > :45:49.Jimmy Vicault will start as the are the faster athletes.

:45:50. > :45:59.Jimmy Vicault will start as the favourite. Martin Keller has one --

:46:00. > :46:12.has run 10.2 recently. They are all pretty well matched. This athlete

:46:13. > :46:18.has run 10.19. The wind reading has been considered to be suspect. So I

:46:19. > :46:23.are not sure how much I believe that time. Jimmy Vicault has been in

:46:24. > :46:27.sparkling form, he ran even quicker than that in

:46:28. > :46:32.sparkling form, he ran even quicker races. He will be a big threat. No

:46:33. > :46:39.Christophe Lemaitre here, a thigh injury has pulled him out of the 200

:46:40. > :46:44.metres. Danny Talbot, he is only the sixth fastest in the UK. But he

:46:45. > :46:49.metres. Danny Talbot, he is only the very quick at 200, he ran a good

:46:50. > :46:54.time in Prague recently. The 200 is his better event. A fast race in

:46:55. > :47:03.Salamanca last week for the Spaniard, 34 years of age. A pretty

:47:04. > :47:10.startling performance. And Martin Keller of Germany. Many of these

:47:11. > :47:15.athletes went off to the Hamas for the world relay challenge that was

:47:16. > :47:19.held in May, a big success that was, the Germans finished in seventh

:47:20. > :47:30.place. Martin Keller run in that event. Incidentally, the first race

:47:31. > :47:34.with the slower athletes was run in 10.46 by the Dutch athlete. The

:47:35. > :47:44.Polish athlete was just behind him. It is not just how you finish, it is

:47:45. > :47:48.how quick you run. The wind does change around, and in the first

:47:49. > :47:54.race, it was a slight headwind, -0.3. But it has been picking up,

:47:55. > :48:00.dropping, moving around, so it could affect the times here. Jimmy Vicault

:48:01. > :48:02.the favourite is in lane three, Danny Talbot next to him in lane

:48:03. > :48:18.four. Away smartly. Not too bad a start

:48:19. > :48:25.from Danny Talbot. A clear win for Jimmy Vicault, Danny Talbot gets

:48:26. > :48:29.second place. I said the wings would be a factor, it switched round again

:48:30. > :48:34.to help the athletes. No doubt about the winner, but well done, Danny

:48:35. > :48:40.Talbot. Although he was a good few metres behind the Frenchman, that is

:48:41. > :48:47.to be expected. I issue me times will mean that he will finish second

:48:48. > :48:52.overwrought. Jimmy Vicault will be a threat, all of the talk about the

:48:53. > :48:58.rest of the British athletes heading towards the Europeans, this guide

:48:59. > :49:03.will be hard to beat. In superb form, as he was in the recent

:49:04. > :49:08.Diamond League race in Oslo, very strong from the start. Danny Talbot

:49:09. > :49:12.picked up in the second half and came through to be a clear-cut

:49:13. > :49:20.second place. The place he was predicted to finish in, 10.304 Danny

:49:21. > :49:25.Talbot. Jimmy Vicault a class apart, he will take all the beating come

:49:26. > :49:29.the European Championships later in the year, and food for thought for

:49:30. > :49:35.all of the British sprinters. Jimmy Vicault in terrific form. I saw him

:49:36. > :49:39.in Oslo alongside call the race, he was looking very confident, he spent

:49:40. > :49:46.a long time talking to the legendary American. He was easing down, that

:49:47. > :49:52.could have been a sub ten second run. That gets combined with the

:49:53. > :49:57.result from the first race, it means that the 10.30 four Danny Talbot

:49:58. > :50:02.will confirm him in second place, that is a good result. Jimmy Vicault

:50:03. > :50:08.very good indeed. We can have a chat with Danny Talbot.

:50:09. > :50:18.Yes, you were predicted second place overall, job done. Yes, I am really

:50:19. > :50:22.pleased to get some points. It is an honour to where the vest, so to do a

:50:23. > :50:27.job for the team and to get a viewpoint is great. What were your

:50:28. > :50:34.thoughts on the start line? Jimmy Vicault has been in superb form. I

:50:35. > :50:39.did not really think that much. I have raced Adam Gemili a few times,

:50:40. > :50:44.he is as good as Jimmy. Which are in a great position, we can raise

:50:45. > :50:48.people of that calibre week in, week out, so it helps us, we are used to

:50:49. > :50:56.racing really fast guys. It was not too bad. You talk of Adam Gemili,

:50:57. > :51:00.Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, they did not take the opportunity, but you did.

:51:01. > :51:05.Why? It is another Great Britain vest. I started the sport to run for

:51:06. > :51:13.Great Britain, so I will take any opportunity. Later on, the relay?

:51:14. > :51:19.Hopefully, the guys can get it round. We have got six guys out

:51:20. > :51:23.here, so whoever is on the start line will do a great job. We showed

:51:24. > :51:29.we are capable of mixing it with those guys, so whichever for run

:51:30. > :51:35.later on, I do not see that we cannot win. Disappointed with the

:51:36. > :51:40.time? Probably. Time has never really concerned me. He had said

:51:41. > :51:45.that I would finish second behind Jimmy Vicault, that is what I was

:51:46. > :51:47.predicted, so the time is irrelevant, it is just good practice

:51:48. > :51:56.for the UK Championships. Well done. We will catch up with some early

:51:57. > :52:20.field event action. Real pressure for the world champion

:52:21. > :52:25.from 2009. She has had two failures on her first two attempts, she has

:52:26. > :52:32.run through on both occasions. Massive moments.

:52:33. > :52:41.No commitment whatsoever. The nightmare scenario from 2012 has

:52:42. > :52:47.come back to haunt her again. She failed on her opening height in

:52:48. > :52:52.London, 4.45, and here she has been ambitious a game, choosing not to

:52:53. > :52:56.come in until 4.40. No prospect of any points for the World

:52:57. > :53:00.Championship gold medallist from Berlin.

:53:01. > :53:07.Lots more action to come, but we will focus on an athlete who is not

:53:08. > :53:13.there but who is the British athlete of the year so far, Katrina Johnson

:53:14. > :53:16.Thomson, world indoor silver medallist, and for her, it is next

:53:17. > :53:29.stop, Glasgow. So many people so excited about the

:53:30. > :53:34.prospects for her career. Who knows what the future holds for her?

:53:35. > :53:39.I was really focused on getting to the Olympics, it was a

:53:40. > :53:45.once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I was 19, the heptathlon is a strong

:53:46. > :53:49.event, you cannot afford any weaknesses, so to get there was a

:53:50. > :53:59.huge achievement. But then I realised I wanted to do it as a

:54:00. > :54:07.career. I had -- I could not compete in the pent-up run indoors, I was

:54:08. > :54:10.working on single events, I was getting personal bests, so

:54:11. > :54:13.working on single events, I was bit worried, coming into the outdoor

:54:14. > :54:20.season, that I was not going to progress. It is my first

:54:21. > :54:26.heptathlon, but it all went to plan. It all happened very quick. I

:54:27. > :54:30.surprised myself in the way that I won, but in certain events I was

:54:31. > :54:40.disappointed, especially the hurdles.

:54:41. > :54:47.It is going to be very interesting in Glasgow, because the Canadian was

:54:48. > :54:56.leading every event, I was always catching her up. Now that I have

:54:57. > :55:01.beaten her, she will be training really hard, I am sure she is going

:55:02. > :55:04.to come back better. The dream for Glasgow will be to hopefully achieve

:55:05. > :55:12.my dreams and come away with the gold medal. I am aiming for a medal,

:55:13. > :55:18.preferably the gold! I have never been a favourite in a senior event.

:55:19. > :55:22.I do not know how I will cope with it, I am not thinking about it,

:55:23. > :55:26.because I have got more competitions today. I

:55:27. > :55:30.because I have got more competitions competition like I always do, it is

:55:31. > :55:33.anyone's to take, if you are a favourite or not.

:55:34. > :55:40.anyone's to take, if you are a It has been some year so far. We

:55:41. > :55:48.have watched it all unfold. But become position into context -- put

:55:49. > :55:50.the competition into context. It has housed the

:55:51. > :55:55.the competition into context. It has athletes, for many years. Outside of

:55:56. > :55:57.the athletes, for many years. Outside of

:55:58. > :56:05.biggest collection of combined events. It is a slick operation, it

:56:06. > :56:10.is well organised, and it is revered as a composition. If you go there,

:56:11. > :56:16.you are in what feels like the home of combined events, it is fantastic.

:56:17. > :56:20.I love competing in there. What she did was completely amazing,

:56:21. > :56:26.I love competing in there. What she by such a young person. I chatted to

:56:27. > :56:30.I love competing in there. What she her in the studio in Moscow after

:56:31. > :56:34.she had finished in fifth place, we talked about her potential, did you

:56:35. > :56:39.expect her to progress in the way that she has in the last

:56:40. > :56:43.expect her to progress in the way months? No. With heptathlete,

:56:44. > :56:44.expect her to progress in the way athletes, you do not know when there

:56:45. > :56:50.is going to be the big athletes, you do not know when there

:56:51. > :56:57.I expected a bit more of a plateau this year, just to consolidate, but

:56:58. > :56:59.she has ripped up the form and said, I am on a chain, I am going places,

:57:00. > :57:05.she had a personal best indoors, I am on a chain, I am going places,

:57:06. > :57:11.got the world silver medal in the long jump, and she went and got a

:57:12. > :57:13.got the world silver medal in the new personal best. Let's talk about

:57:14. > :57:23.some of those personal bests this year, 1.96 high jump, a British

:57:24. > :57:28.record, she has jumped 6.81 indoors, 22.89 4200. That is what you

:57:29. > :57:36.appreciate the most! That is better than mine! I need to work on my

:57:37. > :57:40.200! Very impressive. Some interesting statistics for you to

:57:41. > :57:48.look at, it is about the progression from junior to senior. Jessica

:57:49. > :58:00.Ennis's improvement... Denise Lewis was obviously a late developer!

:58:01. > :58:09.If you added Jessica Ennis's improvement to Katrina, she would be

:58:10. > :58:14.the world record-holder. Never put a ceiling on an athlete's

:58:15. > :58:20.performances. We say that tongue in cheek, but the performances she is

:58:21. > :58:24.delivering now, why not? We know how supreme the world record-holder was,

:58:25. > :58:29.her statistics were very impressive. I remember her setting

:58:30. > :58:33.the Olympic long jump record during the heptathlon, she launched herself

:58:34. > :58:39.over 7.30. You can see what type of athlete she was. Why not? Katrina

:58:40. > :58:45.should be focusing on that, she should be thinking, I will improve

:58:46. > :58:49.each performance. She could be the first British woman to jump two

:58:50. > :58:51.metres. She could be the first British woman to go over seven

:58:52. > :58:58.metres on a regular basis for the long jump. Why not? She is young,

:58:59. > :59:08.with ambition and drive, and already performing, watch this space.

:59:09. > :59:19.She is well ahead of both Jessica and Denise. All right! This is what

:59:20. > :59:28.I have to deal with! I thought I was good then! You were good! You were

:59:29. > :59:36.not as good as you thought! In all seriousness, you know this isn't

:59:37. > :59:41.better than anybody, what do you think is her potential? There is

:59:42. > :59:45.still so much more. You talk about jumping over seven metres, I think

:59:46. > :59:52.she can do that now. She had a file which was marginal, but close to

:59:53. > :59:56.seven metres. She absolutely can. She said she was disappointed with

:59:57. > :00:03.the hurdles, there is a massive improvement to be made, because she

:00:04. > :00:09.has a good speed, and good speed in Durex. She is strong. I would not be

:00:10. > :00:17.surprised if we see her put on another 150 points. That would take

:00:18. > :00:25.her very close to 6800 performances, and now we are talking a serious

:00:26. > :00:32.school. Those throws, she has a lot to gain. Yes, and you know she's

:00:33. > :00:36.talked about how difficult she finds the shot putt in the past, but she's

:00:37. > :00:42.improving. She's got the long levers. She's going back to what we

:00:43. > :00:48.have said, the former heptatheletes looked like, tall and rangy, until

:00:49. > :00:55.Jess flipped that on the head. But she has that. She will have reach,

:00:56. > :01:01.good range, bit like Carolina Kluft, I can see her as she gets stronger

:01:02. > :01:11.putting serious markers down. She's the complete package. The next event

:01:12. > :01:15.is the men's 400. Tell us about what sort of shape Daniel will be in?

:01:16. > :01:31.It's great to see Daniel in the team, considering he was doing

:01:32. > :01:39.decathlon and now he's a 400m runner. Talking about the change

:01:40. > :01:48.from decathlon to 400 metres, that's a substantial change. We've seen

:01:49. > :01:53.AshtonEaton, but to go for a flat four. It's not that different, but

:01:54. > :02:04.mentally, you have to change your outlook to hurt him, basically, all

:02:05. > :02:08.the time. Was it a decision caused by injury, or did he not have the

:02:09. > :02:14.motivation for all ten I know events? Daniel had an injury to his

:02:15. > :02:18.knee. He will share his experience of his knee injury that he went

:02:19. > :02:22.through. I'm going through something similar. He makes sure that I'm

:02:23. > :02:27.getting this kind of treatment and stuff, how's the leg getting on? You

:02:28. > :02:30.lose your muscle mass with a major injury like I've had. He checks up

:02:31. > :02:38.on me. It's nice to have someone who's been through such a trauma,

:02:39. > :02:47.able to share his experience was me. The athletes at the blocks.

:02:48. > :02:53.COMMENTATOR: One by one, they're being introduced to the crowd here.

:02:54. > :02:59.Daniel Awde is in lane seven. He missed most of last year because

:03:00. > :03:05.this afternoon knee injury. A tough task here, predicted to finish in

:03:06. > :03:12.fifth place. We go through the athletes in lane four is Omelko of

:03:13. > :03:17.Poland. In lane five, one of the most talented youngsters on the

:03:18. > :03:34.European scene, the European junior champion over this distance,

:03:35. > :03:37.Ivashko. From Russia. Last year's e-French champion. The national

:03:38. > :03:44.championships yet to happen in France. On the outside, 25-year-old

:03:45. > :03:49.Daniel Awde, fifth all time on the UK decathlon rankings and now, in

:03:50. > :03:56.effect, mounting his second career, his lifetime best set this year. It

:03:57. > :04:03.-- It would be good enough, we suggest, for fiveth place here. The

:04:04. > :04:05.previous heat was won by Agard. As far as Awde is concerned, it's not

:04:06. > :04:09.previous heat was won by Agard. As just his position here, it's about

:04:10. > :04:14.his time as well to determine his overall ranking and how many points

:04:15. > :04:16.he collects for the British team. Four British athletes in the

:04:17. > :04:21.European top ten this season, but none of them are here, not even for

:04:22. > :04:24.the re-lay. Feeds into the debate we've been having in the studio

:04:25. > :04:28.about what sort of shape the team should be for an event like this.

:04:29. > :04:37.Awde on the outside for the men's 400m.

:04:38. > :04:50.And they're away on his inside is Anne of France. He's gone Ofstedily.

:04:51. > :04:54.Quick -- onoffsteadily. -- goneoffsteadily. Ivashko on the

:04:55. > :05:00.outside is running strongly, trying to clear himself now from Ann in

:05:01. > :05:06.second place. Awde is in contention as they come in towards the home

:05:07. > :05:12.straight here. This is a strong run. Gaba quickens. Now he takes the

:05:13. > :05:15.lead. It's Gaba with coming through strongly in second place and

:05:16. > :05:20.sweeping in towards the lead is Ivashko. He is being challenged by

:05:21. > :05:28.Anne. Ivashko loses his stride in the closing stages. Anne takes it.

:05:29. > :05:35.Awde held on to take a wonderful third place. 45. 71 seconds is the

:05:36. > :05:38.winning time for Anne of France. Daniel Awde will have run close to

:05:39. > :05:43.his lifetime best, holding on strongly in the closing stages for

:05:44. > :05:47.third place, as athletes were faltering all around. Ivashko almost

:05:48. > :05:52.fell on the run to the line, having just taken the lead about 30 or 40

:05:53. > :05:55.metres from the line. Gaba of Germany led into the home straight.

:05:56. > :06:01.It's a win for France. Another win on the track after an impressive run

:06:02. > :06:05.by Soumare earlier in the day. Ivashko, there, knows that he lost

:06:06. > :06:11.his form in the closing stages, when the race was there for the taking.

:06:12. > :06:17.It's really interesting. Daniel Awde did well. Not much choice in lane

:06:18. > :06:21.seven in. Lane draws here have nothing to do with your form

:06:22. > :06:25.beforehand. It's just the way the luck goes. Gaba did attack hard

:06:26. > :06:29.through the first 200. Awde had to go out quite hard and judge today

:06:30. > :06:32.pretty well. He could have been forgiven for fading in the hole

:06:33. > :06:37.straight. When Anne came through, he responded well. Watch Ivashko,

:06:38. > :06:40.that's what the 400m is all about, talk about jelly legs, lactic acid

:06:41. > :06:44.dissolving his legs in the end there. Just about made it across the

:06:45. > :06:48.line. Good performance from Daniel Awde. He could have easily faded in

:06:49. > :07:00.the home straight. He hung on well. Strong in the last 50 metres.

:07:01. > :07:13.When you take into account the Polish athlete finishing in fourth

:07:14. > :07:17.place, we heard Rugowska failing to record a point. There's maybe 12

:07:18. > :07:37.lost for the Poles. The overall standings: A very impressive win for

:07:38. > :07:50.Does the bar stay on? currently in second place. One fail

:07:51. > :07:54.our at 4. 45. The technical rules halted here. Four failures total are

:07:55. > :07:57.our at 4. 45. The technical rules all that are permitted. Look at

:07:58. > :08:03.that, really clattered the bar. But it stay as board.

:08:04. > :08:07.4. 55 is the clearance. She is in first place. Only one failure. An

:08:08. > :08:11.impressively clean card to this points.

:08:12. > :08:21.The athlete remaining in contention in the women's pole vault. Svobodova

:08:22. > :08:26.from the Czech Republic, this is her second attempt at 4. 55. These are

:08:27. > :08:31.the only two athletes remaining in the competition. They

:08:32. > :08:37.silver, remember. That was the 2014 championships this

:08:38. > :08:42.year. It's another duel between the two of them. She is clear. She's

:08:43. > :08:51.over at the second attempt at 4. 55. She remains in contention. Punching

:08:52. > :09:04.way above her weight according to the predictions. Season's best at 4.

:09:05. > :09:07.55, she's in second place. There you can see the team standings. A couple

:09:08. > :09:09.of good results with Great Britain see us level with Russia on points.

:09:10. > :09:41.( It's a good crowd here, particularly

:09:42. > :09:57.in the home straight. The next event is the women's 800m.

:09:58. > :10:45.Jenni Meadows going for Great Britain in this. Made the world

:10:46. > :10:53.final in the indoor champions, ran very well there. Sixth place there.

:10:54. > :11:08.Verstegen will be difficult as well. Great performance to take the Silver

:11:09. > :11:16.Medal in front of her home crowd. Kohlmann goes for Germany. On the

:11:17. > :11:20.outside Meadows shares the lane with Koyuncu of Turkey.

:11:21. > :11:26.Jenni has won this event in the past, not with 12 teams in it, when

:11:27. > :11:33.it was just the European Cup, in the old days. Really just Jenfy trying

:11:34. > :11:42.to -- Jenny trying to find her form again. There were 15 in one race and

:11:43. > :11:47.she finished ninth in that event. She's been there or there abouts.

:11:48. > :11:54.Let's see what she can do here. Two laps of the track as ever,

:11:55. > :11:58.tactics very much come into play here. Meadows has gone out hard. I

:11:59. > :12:01.tactics very much come into play would be surprise today we didn't

:12:02. > :12:10.see her near the front on the this first lap. The Frenchwoman coming

:12:11. > :12:14.across, now they all just look at each other and see who wants to take

:12:15. > :12:21.it on from here. Just got to be careful. Jenny Meadows tucking into

:12:22. > :12:25.the pack. Now Meadows just moving a little bit closer to the front which

:12:26. > :12:29.I'm happier to see. Yes, Jenny is very experienced in races like this.

:12:30. > :12:33.It is unusual to see this many athletes out there on the track in

:12:34. > :12:38.an 800m race, especially where there are no pace makers, obviously, being

:12:39. > :12:42.a team championships situation. They need to just settle into a tactical

:12:43. > :12:49.race. Jenny very good at getting herself in the right position at the

:12:50. > :12:53.right time. We might be having problems with Paula's mic there,

:12:54. > :12:58.apologies for that. Meadows is in a good position. She needs to hold

:12:59. > :13:02.that there. It will be difficult to see where - you can predict where

:13:03. > :13:06.the dangerer is coming from. There are so many good runners in here.

:13:07. > :13:10.the dangerer is coming from. There Poistogova is on the inside. Jenny

:13:11. > :13:19.is in a good position. They go down the back straight. This is anyone's

:13:20. > :13:23.race at the moment. Just over 200m to go. Jenny struggling for a bit of

:13:24. > :13:40.pace at the minute. Masna on the inside as well. Lyakhova the first

:13:41. > :13:43.to strike. Lyakhova is going away. Here comes the Russian on the

:13:44. > :13:46.outside. She was the favourite to win this. She's going to get there.

:13:47. > :13:55.Poistogova has left it very late. She is going to take the victory.

:13:56. > :13:59.Russia get maximum point. Lyakhova hangs on. A disappointing run there

:14:00. > :14:03.for Jenny Meadows. I don't think this is the sort of race which, at

:14:04. > :14:08.this stage of Jenny's comeback, is going to suit her. A good good hard

:14:09. > :14:13.races -- the good, hard races she's OK with. Goodness me she played a

:14:14. > :14:17.canny game as they say in my part of the world, hung on and waited for

:14:18. > :14:20.the gap to appear, had a lot of confidence in her kick in the home

:14:21. > :14:25.straight. I hope your mic is working this time, and time today perfectly.

:14:26. > :14:29.That was a messy race. I think you needed to hold your nerve. As they

:14:30. > :14:33.were coming around the top, before the straight, the wind raz really --

:14:34. > :14:37.was really strong. Jenny was going backwards at that stage. Poistogova

:14:38. > :14:39.time today perfectly and was going away. The only one who was full of

:14:40. > :14:46.running in the final 50 m or so. away. The only one who was full of

:14:47. > :14:49.Everyone else can hear you apparently, except the rest of the

:14:50. > :14:57.commentary team, whatever you said it was brilliant. Really close for

:14:58. > :15:01.second. It was have been - you say about the French team, Lamote would

:15:02. > :15:04.not have been considered to get in the top three. But if they keep

:15:05. > :15:08.putting in performances like that one, that's going to

:15:09. > :15:11.putting in performances like that cause. Meadows, it will be

:15:12. > :15:12.interesting to see, she will be disappointed not to do well in races

:15:13. > :15:32.like this. positions and points. There is

:15:33. > :15:38.always a smile on your face. I got myself in a good position, it is

:15:39. > :15:42.swirling, so I almost got to the front and thought, I am really

:15:43. > :15:48.small, I do not want to take on the wind. I did not do much wrong, but

:15:49. > :15:56.50 metres before the 600, I missed the break. A few girls went past me,

:15:57. > :16:00.which I was annoyed out. But during the home stretch, I was really

:16:01. > :16:04.strong, I have not been strong so far this season, so I am

:16:05. > :16:11.disappointed that I never brought home better points for the team, it

:16:12. > :16:20.is not about times or just personal result, but I finished strongly,

:16:21. > :16:26.which I was pleased about. It about getting the competitive instinct, I

:16:27. > :16:35.will learn from that race. Yesterday, you said, I always feel

:16:36. > :16:38.like I am on a comeback. Yes, I had done for races back-to-back in the

:16:39. > :16:43.outdoor season, which is really great, I am getting used to the

:16:44. > :16:49.emotions again. On the start line, I was thinking, this will happen. I am

:16:50. > :16:55.back in the mix, hoping that little from here. You have been selected

:16:56. > :17:00.for England for the Commonwealth Games, what are your other ambitions

:17:01. > :17:05.for the year? Next week, we have got the UK Championship 's, which will

:17:06. > :17:09.be very competitive. I would love to get a place in the European team.

:17:10. > :17:20.But really, just to do myself justice. Training is going really

:17:21. > :17:24.well, I am not race fit, tactics, I am pausing quite a lot and not

:17:25. > :17:28.making decisions quickly, so I want to make sure that I can get the

:17:29. > :17:35.times that I do in training on the track next. Can you get back to your

:17:36. > :17:39.best? I would love to. Sometimes, you take things for granted, but I

:17:40. > :17:43.would love to do under two minutes, that would be a big achievement. If

:17:44. > :17:48.I can do that a couple of times and make a couple of finals, that would

:17:49. > :17:55.be brilliant. Well done. Very considered answers from Jenny.

:17:56. > :18:00.She was disappointed with the points, but you sense she took a lot

:18:01. > :18:04.out of that race. When you have missed a lot of training and been

:18:05. > :18:12.injured repeatedly for so many years, you are constantly searching

:18:13. > :18:17.for something that is going right, and she says her training is going

:18:18. > :18:21.well. She put herself in a great position to be in contention. What

:18:22. > :18:28.is missing, when you have been injured, is the trust in the

:18:29. > :18:33.decision-making, can I attack now, can I put my foot down? You are

:18:34. > :18:38.hesitant. That only comes through competing more, and then you

:18:39. > :18:45.re-evaluate after your competitions. Perry, you are going through your

:18:46. > :18:49.own injury hell. Jenny has been through a really tough time. It is

:18:50. > :18:54.great to see her back and starting to get back to something like her

:18:55. > :18:58.best. Yes, that is what I have been told by other athletes, when you do

:18:59. > :19:06.come back, even coaches have said it, do not expect to be at your

:19:07. > :19:13.best, it will take a lot of time and races and watching the likes of

:19:14. > :19:17.Jenny, she has run superbly in the past, and it will come. It will take

:19:18. > :19:23.patience and trust in her coach and trainers. I will have to look

:19:24. > :19:29.forward to that. Not look forward to it, but prepare myself mentally. As

:19:30. > :19:35.soon as you step on the track, you almost feel like your old self, but

:19:36. > :19:41.it is still so far away. It is great to see her running, she gives the

:19:42. > :19:45.team a real boost, as you will be. We will talk about that more later.

:19:46. > :19:52.Let's stick to Paula Radcliffe for her thoughts. You have heard

:19:53. > :19:58.Jenny's interview, there was a sense of encouragement about her

:19:59. > :20:07.performance in what she said. Yes, I did not hear her interview, but from

:20:08. > :20:10.her this year, what we have seen is she has been getting herself out

:20:11. > :20:15.there in the right position, putting herself in the right place and

:20:16. > :20:21.getting to that point, where she is waiting around 200 metres out. The

:20:22. > :20:28.power and confidence still have to come back. The strength in the final

:20:29. > :20:35.stages of the race is not quite there, she drifted back a bit here

:20:36. > :20:38.today. But it will come. It is about waiting for that to come. It is

:20:39. > :20:51.there, it is not quite coming through yet. You have had a lot to

:20:52. > :20:55.do with her, you have been a support to her through her horrific winter

:20:56. > :21:01.with injury. Yes, she struggled through the winter. Mentally as well

:21:02. > :21:05.as physically, it hit her hard. She came off the back of a good summer,

:21:06. > :21:11.which started really well, and then she was hanging on in Moscow and the

:21:12. > :21:15.World Championships, she went into the winter looking to put a good

:21:16. > :21:20.base down, and she picked up the injury. But she put a good winter

:21:21. > :21:24.together, and now her team are trying to hold her back so she can

:21:25. > :21:33.come in to form later in the season, because this is a long season. It is

:21:34. > :21:36.what we are starting to see click. I guess she needs to make sure she

:21:37. > :21:42.does not run out of steam because she has missed so much work. I do

:21:43. > :21:46.not think there is much danger of that, she has put the work in and

:21:47. > :21:52.put the base down. It is more about keeping her confidence high, because

:21:53. > :21:56.she has not started the season as strongly as she did last year, but

:21:57. > :22:00.she needs to believe she has it in the tank. The strength will show

:22:01. > :22:06.towards the end of the season, she will keep building, which is

:22:07. > :22:12.watching once per day. This is the women's 3000 metres. Watch out for

:22:13. > :22:19.Kate a very. Again, it is all about the points.

:22:20. > :22:30.It will be difficult for her, we saw two good athletes there, Sifan

:22:31. > :22:36.Hassan is having a good season for the Netherlands. Next to her, Renata

:22:37. > :22:40.Plis, who will have some high expectations from her Polish team. I

:22:41. > :22:48.am not sure she is running all that well this year. We also have Nuria

:22:49. > :22:57.Fernandez. 37 years of age, interesting to see how she performs.

:22:58. > :23:07.And the winner from last year. She beat the British athlete. A bit of

:23:08. > :23:10.continuity between the British athletes, because Kate a very is

:23:11. > :23:23.close to Laura. The danger for the likes of Kate,

:23:24. > :23:31.she will be happy if this race is at a better place. She is not a 1500

:23:32. > :23:37.metres specialist. Anybody who takes this out, she will be happy.

:23:38. > :23:45.Definitely, she would prefer to see an honest race, rather than a

:23:46. > :23:48.tactical run. First off, the French athlete has gone to the front, she

:23:49. > :23:56.is having a really good breakthrough year, she finished her university

:23:57. > :24:05.studies and has knuckled down. She won the European cup 10,000 metre

:24:06. > :24:10.race. She ran a big personal best, 31.54, something like that. She is

:24:11. > :24:20.wanting to keep this moving along at a decent pace. She is keeping it

:24:21. > :24:29.going, but I do not think she is making any huge effort here. Into

:24:30. > :24:33.the wind, they bunch up a bit more. If you do take it on, you are taking

:24:34. > :24:37.on the conditions as well. It is swirling around. This will not be

:24:38. > :24:53.too disappointing for Kate Avery. The Russian, most of the Russians

:24:54. > :25:00.have not done much so far this season. You will have your own

:25:01. > :25:05.thoughts on that. It is not something we always want to point

:25:06. > :25:09.out, but so many Russian athletes, especially women, have been taken

:25:10. > :25:19.out for doping offences, which is a good thing, it has had them hard.

:25:20. > :25:21.Over the years, so many good performances for the Russian

:25:22. > :25:28.distance athletes. The women's triple jump. The French

:25:29. > :25:37.competitor. Not going to trouble believers. A disappointing effort.

:25:38. > :25:43.That looks like my triple jump! Talking about athlete competing in

:25:44. > :25:46.events to make up the points, and sometimes athletes do a job for

:25:47. > :25:52.their country and either they are not 100%... We saw Jimmy Vicault win

:25:53. > :25:59.the 100 metres, and after the race, he did not just ease up, he said he

:26:00. > :26:05.felt his hamstring go. He is a bit worried about it. He said, I have

:26:06. > :26:11.got to go to see the team doctor. British sprinters will keep an eye

:26:12. > :26:23.on that. This is the start list for the discus. Indeed. The Frenchwoman

:26:24. > :26:29.fancied to take maximum points. A real excellent combination thrower

:26:30. > :26:33.for the Germans. She is a late replacement for Nadine Muller. How

:26:34. > :26:40.about that for a start? The change came relatively late. Nadine Muller

:26:41. > :26:46.is the premier performer, she is stepping up. 2012 World Junior

:26:47. > :26:56.Championship in the shot put, the youth Olympic champion in the

:26:57. > :27:03.discus. Personal best, 65.38, which she said earlier this year. That

:27:04. > :27:11.will make a real impact. First place in the early stages of the

:27:12. > :27:14.competition. We will be interrupting the distance

:27:15. > :27:24.races to keep you up-to-date with the field. The Frenchwoman is

:27:25. > :27:33.leading this. Jimmy Vicault might have a hamstring problem, that might

:27:34. > :27:38.affect his progress. The German is second, the Russian 's third, and

:27:39. > :27:44.behind her, Sifan Hassan. We thought she would be the favourite, 3000

:27:45. > :27:49.metres is well in the comfort of her, the type of season she is

:27:50. > :27:53.having. She has got the pace to take on anything. She will be the one for

:27:54. > :28:00.all of them to worry about. Absolutely. With the 3000 metres, it

:28:01. > :28:05.is not a championship event, but we see it a lot in competitions like

:28:06. > :28:16.this. You get the 5000 metres, the 10,000 metres athletes, jointed take

:28:17. > :28:24.the sting out of the 1500 metre runners. Sifan Hassan will be the

:28:25. > :28:34.big danger, she is happy to just sit there. Here is the French athlete,

:28:35. > :28:39.the defending European teams and, Melina Robert-Michon. She has

:28:40. > :28:52.the defending European teams and, hold of it. Such a long outstanding

:28:53. > :28:54.the defending European teams and, competitor for France. She finally

:28:55. > :29:03.got herself some global success in Moscow last summer, emotional scenes

:29:04. > :29:08.after that. She has really caught a hold of that one, after a foul in

:29:09. > :29:19.the opening round. She has reeled in the German. She goes into the lead.

:29:20. > :29:22.Two laps to go in the women's 3000 metres, and a good pace set ID

:29:23. > :29:32.Frenchwoman. This is close metres, and a good pace set ID

:29:33. > :29:40.macro's personal best. Dash-mac Kate Avery's personal best. The

:29:41. > :29:47.Frenchwoman is doing what you might expect. Take it out hard, try to

:29:48. > :29:53.make them work, but Kate Avery is doing a great job. We have already

:29:54. > :29:57.lost three athlete of the back of this group, look at Sifan Hassan,

:29:58. > :30:09.she is itching to get going. Kate Avery is still in with every

:30:10. > :30:15.opportunity to get some good points for Britain. 500 metres to go, Sifan

:30:16. > :30:24.Hassan moving out, she looks very comfortable. She does not do a huge

:30:25. > :30:34.amount very quickly. Then, she put her foot down to the floor. Kate

:30:35. > :30:39.Avery has got to dig in, they have all started to dig in and push on.

:30:40. > :30:45.Kate Avery has got to try and hang on and pick one of them off. She

:30:46. > :30:52.finds herself back in ninth place. Sifan Hassan, as expected, kicking

:30:53. > :30:59.away. She is in superb form. She ran really well in the 800 in Ostroff.

:31:00. > :31:07.Look at the damage she is doing. The Russian has no answer. None of them

:31:08. > :31:14.anywhere near her. She moved to Holland a good few years ago, she

:31:15. > :31:17.won in front of her home crowd, she went to school in Holland when she

:31:18. > :31:23.first moved there, she is becoming quite a big name there. Really

:31:24. > :31:27.dominant on the last lap. Maximum points for the Dutch team, they will

:31:28. > :31:40.need that if they are to stay in the top league. Russia take second. Wow.

:31:41. > :31:44.Kind of like Mo Farah last year, remember in Gateshead, when he took

:31:45. > :31:48.off in the 5000m? Hassan doing the equivalent of the that. That's

:31:49. > :31:54.impressive. I was about to say that. That was very reminiscent of Mo's

:31:55. > :31:58.last lap. He really went on the line. But she was very, very

:31:59. > :32:01.impressive there. 58-second last lap, really did make the others look

:32:02. > :32:05.like they were in a completely different race. It really mess aid

:32:06. > :32:11.little bit with their heads almost, going into that and probably

:32:12. > :32:17.accounted for the strange results that besaw and the way the field was

:32:18. > :32:20.blown apart there. There you see Shmidt coming in for Ukraine, who is

:32:21. > :32:25.really struggling and Shmidt coming in for Ukraine, who is

:32:26. > :32:29.the points for her team. Quite a few athletes getting decent times. The

:32:30. > :32:33.thing about the 3,000, many athletes can't get on the big 3,000 on the

:32:34. > :32:38.Diamond League circuits. Hassan certainly could do if she wanted to.

:32:39. > :32:43.I reckon she could run a pretty fast 3,000 m. Korobkina held on for

:32:44. > :32:51.second. Fernandez did well to come in third. Plis faded. Calvin faded

:32:52. > :32:56.towards the end as well. As you said, when you get this mix, the

:32:57. > :33:00.1500m runners, you have to say 800m runner as well, it just stands out

:33:01. > :33:05.when you have that sort of pace to burn. That makes the others look

:33:06. > :33:12.rather pedestrian in the end. I'm waiting for Kate Avery's result to

:33:13. > :33:18.come up. It may be a personal best. Calvin of France was in seventh. I

:33:19. > :33:24.think Kate Avery may be rewarded with a couple of seconds off her

:33:25. > :33:28.personal best. Indeed she has. If nothing else, she can't argue with

:33:29. > :33:32.that. She has come here and run a personal best. Always going to trug

:33:33. > :33:44.well speed, though, Kate. -- struggle.

:33:45. > :33:57.It's back to the discus, into the second round, Strokova. She gives a

:33:58. > :34:02.big roar as she lets it go. That will be an improvement. Strokova

:34:03. > :34:09.predicted for third position, so ten points for the Russian team. A

:34:10. > :34:19.season's best and a personal best of 65. 78, that came in Moscow.

:34:20. > :34:24.She's sixth on the world list this year. She improved. She remains in

:34:25. > :35:01.third place. Onto the triple jump. Looks to be

:35:02. > :35:10.similar to what she produced earlier on. It won't be an impact on the

:35:11. > :35:15.lead. Swirling conditions down there on the triple jump runway. Just

:35:16. > :35:21.looking at the readings. One moment it can be a head wind. The next

:35:22. > :35:26.minute a powerful tail wind. Athletes having to contend with

:35:27. > :35:33.that. Fourth position. That's still her best effort.

:35:34. > :35:40.You get an idea of how blustery the conditions are. You see the

:35:41. > :35:52.officials' flags fluttering in the wind. Just preparing for her jump

:35:53. > :35:58.will be germ nip's representative, Elbe. Huge support from the crowd

:35:59. > :36:05.here in Braunschweig. A personal best this season of 14. 20,

:36:06. > :36:09.currently in third position in her final attempt. Only the top four

:36:10. > :36:18.will receive an additional attempt. They go in reverse order. So this is

:36:19. > :36:25.Elbe's fourth and final effort. 14. 01 is her best to this point.

:36:26. > :36:29.Can she improve? She lost her balance and stands in frustration

:36:30. > :36:39.because that won't be any improvement. Predicted nine points

:36:40. > :36:46.then, fourth position. She has punched exactly at her weight.

:36:47. > :36:51.Fourth position for Elbe and congratulations. She's done a good

:36:52. > :36:57.job for the team. Bronze medallist in 2009 at the junior championships.

:36:58. > :37:02.Translated to the under-23 rankings with a fourth-place finish in the

:37:03. > :37:08.European under-23 champions in 2011. Anguish on that last effort. 14. 01

:37:09. > :37:16.remains her best. You get the idea of how the wind changed direction.

:37:17. > :37:19.Producing, as predicted. Now Saladukha, the reigning World

:37:20. > :37:23.Championship bronze medallist. Survived the pressure she placed

:37:24. > :37:33.herself under after producing two fouls on the first two jumps.

:37:34. > :37:38.Produced a really impressive 14. 33. Just have to wait, confirmation to

:37:39. > :37:46.see what the distance is. Eighth on the world list this year. 14. 32

:37:47. > :37:52.coming in, a lifetime best of 14. 99. That terrific, rangy stride has

:37:53. > :37:56.carried her to so much podium success. How about that, definitely

:37:57. > :38:02.not touching the plasticine, that's such a cause of controversy. Greg

:38:03. > :38:08.Rutherford produced that jump, plasticine in effect here. 14. 33 is

:38:09. > :38:11.her best effort, third place. The highlights of day one of these

:38:12. > :38:15.European Athletics Team Champions has been that 3,000 m championship

:38:16. > :38:17.record from Hassan of the Netherlands. Plenty more besides.

:38:18. > :38:28.Here's what you've missed. Got to love the music, in the men's

:38:29. > :38:34.100m, Danny Talbot of Great Britain came second taking 11 points. He

:38:35. > :38:39.really is the one to beat, the Frenchman, come the European

:38:40. > :38:45.Championships in August. The men's 400m, former decathlete

:38:46. > :38:46.Daniel Awde performed above expectation, finishing third, taking

:38:47. > :38:53.ten points. And still to come: expectation, finishing third, taking

:38:54. > :39:01.Eilidh Child is going for maximum points in the women's 400m.

:39:02. > :39:05.Hurdles, even! Alongside us Perri Shakes-Drayton, who was the captain

:39:06. > :39:08.last year in Gateshead. She had a horrible injury in Moscow, that's

:39:09. > :39:15.why she's here. Before we chat about that. Here's some of the ups and

:39:16. > :39:18.downs of your career. Great run from Perri Shakes-Drayton,

:39:19. > :39:25.who I think will have smashed her personal best. Perri Shakes-Drayton

:39:26. > :39:32.still on a learning curve, only 20 years old. She's a precocious youth

:39:33. > :39:41.in terms of her athletic talent and it's now really beginning to shine.

:39:42. > :39:54.It's gold for Britain in the women's 4 X 400m relay. 53. 78, any doubt

:39:55. > :39:58.about her form are totally gone. Only two fastest losers will make it

:39:59. > :40:12.through to the final. That means Perri Shakes-Drayton is out. She

:40:13. > :40:24.wins it in a superb time! She hits that hurdle and she was broken.

:40:25. > :40:32.I'm emotional. Yeah, absolutely. Because you've been through a lot,

:40:33. > :40:37.haven't you, in a fairly short space of time. You just compose yourself

:40:38. > :40:41.for a second, Denise, I will come to you. That's athletics. It's a great

:40:42. > :40:43.reflection of life and you have to pick yourself up through the

:40:44. > :40:48.disappointments as well as take the good times. It's tough. It's a tough

:40:49. > :40:52.sport. Sometimes I don't believe that we get the recognition, the

:40:53. > :40:56.athletes don't get the recognition that they deserve. They put

:40:57. > :41:01.themselves on the line. Perri was having the most glorious time. She

:41:02. > :41:07.was coming into her own really. We'd seen her majestic over the hurledles

:41:08. > :41:11.and -- hurdles and then setting the flat four alight with personal bets

:41:12. > :41:15.indoors, outdoors, it was fantastic. Then I don't know, it shows the

:41:16. > :41:19.measure of the young lady, because that injury in Moscow, from where we

:41:20. > :41:25.were sitting, it didn't look like much. We saw her hit the hurdle, but

:41:26. > :41:29.she carried on running. Oh, stride pattern must have got - went out the

:41:30. > :41:35.window. She managed to drive on and finish the race. Then oh,

:41:36. > :41:38.devastation. I was going to suggest we played the gothenberg VT of your

:41:39. > :41:44.winning first to cheer you up. You are struggling a little bit in here.

:41:45. > :41:50.It's hard, it's thoord know that actually I guess where you are now

:41:51. > :41:53.and you're still not... 100%. In our You're not on the What was track.

:41:54. > :42:01.Wrong in that race? What happened to you? What was the injury? I tore my

:42:02. > :42:06.PCL. Posterior cruciate ligament. Yes, and I damaged the cartilage. I

:42:07. > :42:11.had surgery done a week after it happened on the cartilage. This all

:42:12. > :42:17.happened in the race and first of all, a PCL went and then I remember

:42:18. > :42:20.I couldn't control my legs. I kept going, as an athlete you're

:42:21. > :42:23.determined you're going to keep going and fighting through.

:42:24. > :42:28.Obviously, I've done myself more damage because instead of stopping,

:42:29. > :42:34.I kept going and that's when I damaged the cartilage. Yeah, it's

:42:35. > :42:37.been ten months since it happened. I must say may rehab has been going

:42:38. > :42:43.really well. I'm fighting through it. I mean, to me, I'm becoming a

:42:44. > :42:45.stronger athlete and I believe I will become better than I was

:42:46. > :42:49.before. Because I've been able to work on other weaknesses that I may

:42:50. > :42:53.have had, other problems that I may have had. Now I'm able to work on

:42:54. > :42:57.Give us them. An idea of where you're at in your rehab, what you

:42:58. > :43:02.can do, what the time table is for coming back to compete? So, the one

:43:03. > :43:07.thing that I love using, even though rehab is tough, I'm on a machine

:43:08. > :43:11.called an ultra--G machine. Basically it's the antigravity tread

:43:12. > :43:16.mill. Obviously that's the closest thing at the moment I am doing to

:43:17. > :43:23.running. I'm about 90% of my body weight of that. I'm getting closer

:43:24. > :43:29.to being on, if anything grass, before you go and transform to the

:43:30. > :43:37.track. Other stuff I'm doing, I'm in the pool, bike sessions, I can do

:43:38. > :43:41.the odd drills now and again. Yeah, it's just, for us to just take it

:43:42. > :43:45.easy and for me just to report back if there is any pain that I'm

:43:46. > :43:50.feeling. I have to let the physio, and Chris know. The surgery went

:43:51. > :43:54.well. I'm able to go forward. At the beginning stages, I'm not going to

:43:55. > :43:59.lie, there were ups and downs. I was on crutches for three months.

:44:00. > :44:03.Imagine in that time, the muscle mass in my leg, I'm a slim person

:44:04. > :44:07.any way, but the fact that people could notice, my leg was

:44:08. > :44:11.ultra-skinny. It was really horrible to see. It was like, oh, this

:44:12. > :44:17.actually really happened. People warned me. I taut it wouldn't

:44:18. > :44:21.happen. I was usually a machine which is there just to stimulate the

:44:22. > :44:25.muscles and stuff. I was told to use that. I was using that, but still,

:44:26. > :44:30.now I'm at the stage where I can do heavier weights to build on that

:44:31. > :44:34.muscle that I've You mention lost. Your coach, Chris, how important has

:44:35. > :44:41.he been through this whole process? He's been very important. Mentally,

:44:42. > :44:46.he's been there for me a lot. Even though I have had a psychologist as

:44:47. > :44:51.well. Going through an injury, it is tough. You doubt yourself as well.

:44:52. > :44:57.But having friends and family around you to uplift you and for you to

:44:58. > :45:01.remain positive is a good feeling. And seeing that video that you lot

:45:02. > :45:07.made for me, it was touching, I was very tearful. But I've been at the

:45:08. > :45:11.world stage before and seeing that video makes me even more determined

:45:12. > :45:16.thinking - I will be back! It's nice to be on this show as well to be

:45:17. > :45:20.remembered and stuff. No, I will be back. I will be. I'm sure you will.

:45:21. > :45:23.I'm fighting through it. When you come back, one of the things that

:45:24. > :45:28.has been said because of the injuries that you won't hurdle. Is

:45:29. > :45:33.that definitely decided? I won't be doing hurdles when I come back. I

:45:34. > :45:39.may go back to it, but for now, it's for me just to focus on being a 400m

:45:40. > :45:44.runners. I had unfinished business in the 400m hurdles. I would love to

:45:45. > :45:48.have my name on a British record as number one, currently number two. I

:45:49. > :45:53.would love that, but you know, I think for now it's just going to be

:45:54. > :45:58.the flat running. You can run that 400, because we will look at the

:45:59. > :46:01.European indoors from gothenberg. Looking at those videos make you

:46:02. > :46:09.more determined to be back and seeing you running here must do

:46:10. > :46:14.that. It makes the gift -- grateful for the gift that I have and the

:46:15. > :46:20.ability to compete at a higher level. Everything is happening so

:46:21. > :46:25.fast at the time. I was grateful I was able to run.

:46:26. > :46:32.Now, I will appreciate it more. You have to experience it,

:46:33. > :46:40.unfortunately, it comes with the turf. You talk about being a better

:46:41. > :46:49.athlete, because you will know your body so much more. Going back to my

:46:50. > :46:54.experiences, you start to live in the now a bit more, you do not think

:46:55. > :47:01.so long term. You make sure what you are doing now is to the best of the

:47:02. > :47:06.ability that you have now. Exactly. Colin, the potential that Perry has

:47:07. > :47:14.over 400 could be equal to what she had at 400 hurdles. Your technique

:47:15. > :47:22.was not amazing! It got better! It is the school of hard knocks in

:47:23. > :47:26.here! It definitely got better! That was a good question, everybody was

:47:27. > :47:33.waiting to hear whether he would do hurdles or flat. Let's be honest,

:47:34. > :47:37.you are young enough, you still learning both events, and whatever

:47:38. > :47:44.stimulates you get back on the track is the key. If you want to do the

:47:45. > :47:51.flat, wonderful, but I want to see due back over those sticks, to!

:47:52. > :47:53.Deputising for you this weekend is Eilidh Child. We can hear from her

:47:54. > :47:59.now. It has been a good start to the

:48:00. > :48:04.season, I have only run three hurdles races so far, all in the top

:48:05. > :48:12.three, so I cannot complain. I am making good progress. Some of the

:48:13. > :48:16.races have been quite messy, but you still close to your lifetime best

:48:17. > :48:22.running that way. That is the positive thing, the races have not

:48:23. > :48:26.gone exactly to plan, I am just working on my stride pattern, I am a

:48:27. > :48:34.bit quicker this year, so there are a few tweaks to be made, but I am

:48:35. > :48:41.hopeful for more to come. In terms of this weekend, one of the most

:48:42. > :48:46.experienced members, big points expected from you, do you carry that

:48:47. > :48:52.into the race? Yes, this is the first time where I will be expected

:48:53. > :48:56.to get full points. I have done this the last few years and I have not

:48:57. > :49:02.had the same expectation, but you put that on yourself anyway. I am

:49:03. > :49:07.ranked top in Europe this year, so I want to win the race, but as long as

:49:08. > :49:10.I can run smoothly and executed well, hopefully that is enough to

:49:11. > :49:15.win. She won last year in Gateshead, and

:49:16. > :49:22.expectation is that she will win again here. I hope so. She is

:49:23. > :49:28.experienced, she needs to show them what she is about. She says she is

:49:29. > :49:36.ranked number one in Europe. It is good practice for her. The trials

:49:37. > :49:47.will be very easy for her, a walk in the park! That will be... Today will

:49:48. > :49:50.be a one-off, like a time trial. She will have trials, which will be

:49:51. > :49:54.easy, and then she will have the Commonwealth Games. It will be

:49:55. > :50:01.massive for her, she will be one of the poster girls. Scotland do not

:50:02. > :50:06.have a huge amount of gold medal chances in Chuck and field, she is

:50:07. > :50:14.the main one. I have had that in pressure, but use it to your

:50:15. > :50:18.advantage, embrace it. She will be at home, because Scotland is home

:50:19. > :50:24.for her. Enjoy every moment, that is my advice. You mentioned the British

:50:25. > :50:39.record, held by Sally Gunnell, it is very quick.

:50:40. > :50:49.Sally Gunnell leading. She stumbled a bit of that hurdle. The Ukrainian

:50:50. > :50:59.storming through. Sally Gunnell leading. The Olympic and world

:51:00. > :51:00.champion storming through. The second fastest time in the world

:51:01. > :51:08.this year. Sally Gunnell surely second fastest time in the world

:51:09. > :51:14.not be beaten here. The island pig Champion, the world champion, she

:51:15. > :51:22.leaves Britain home -- the only big champion. That was a superb way for

:51:23. > :51:25.the women's team captain, in front of a British crowd, to take Britain

:51:26. > :51:43.to the World Cup. That was Sally in her pond, 1993, it

:51:44. > :51:49.was the world record, and the gold medal, a bit like you. I cannot

:51:50. > :51:58.remember! It is not an easy route is record. Not at all. We have to be

:51:59. > :52:05.optimistic. Things are achievable. Yes! Of course, I would love it. It

:52:06. > :52:10.will take a lot of hard work. Put me in the 400 metres, I would love to

:52:11. > :52:16.have the British record. Christine has it at the moment. We would love

:52:17. > :52:21.that head-to-head. The knees, you did not compete often in this meet,

:52:22. > :52:32.but you were there in Birmingham. I was in the long jump, with a

:52:33. > :52:36.fantastic store bought of German athletics, she held the world record

:52:37. > :52:43.at one stage, she was amazing. The atmosphere was great, and Sally was

:52:44. > :52:44.a great captain. We always looked to her to deliver, as we do for Eilidh

:52:45. > :52:57.Child. Britain still waiting for a first

:52:58. > :53:01.winner of the afternoon at the 2014 European Team Championships, but to

:53:02. > :53:06.strong prospect coming up in the next half an hour or so. Just

:53:07. > :53:10.appearing to warm up for the long jump on the other side of the

:53:11. > :53:13.track, at the edge of the infield, Greg Rutherford, all smiles. Here,

:53:14. > :53:22.in the women's 400 metres Greg Rutherford, all smiles. Here,

:53:23. > :53:27.Lane number six, Eilidh Child. She is the standout performer in this

:53:28. > :53:32.field. Perry was talking about the 55 second barrier, Eilidh Child the

:53:33. > :53:44.only athlete who has broken that so far this season. On the inside, the

:53:45. > :53:51.Italian. The German is well supported here by the capacity

:53:52. > :54:03.crowd. It is more sparsely populated on the far side of the stadium. The

:54:04. > :54:06.Ukrainian is forecast to finish behind Eilidh Child, Eilidh Child is

:54:07. > :54:13.forecast to produce Britain's first victory of the afternoon. The

:54:14. > :54:19.Russian is the second best in terms of performances this season, but on

:54:20. > :54:27.lifetime bests, she is the fastest. That was that two seasons ago.

:54:28. > :54:33.Eilidh Child, 27. We are creeping ever closer to the Commonwealth

:54:34. > :54:37.Games. Five weeks between here and the athletics competition at Hampden

:54:38. > :54:41.Park in Glasgow. That would light up the stadium if she could win a

:54:42. > :54:42.medal. We know there will be a strong Jamaican contingent in

:54:43. > :55:00.opposition. Denisa Rosolova, if she produced her

:55:01. > :55:05.best form, she would run very close to winning this. A strong chance for

:55:06. > :55:14.Eilidh Child, fifth in the world so far this year. To adapt to her

:55:15. > :55:17.increasing speed, she has been adapting her stride pattern. This is

:55:18. > :55:23.an important step on that journey towards the Commonwealth Games, one

:55:24. > :55:28.of Scotland's leading medal hopes for the athletics in the magnificent

:55:29. > :55:32.Hamden Park stadium. She is in lane six, looking to improve on her

:55:33. > :55:48.season 's best time so far, 54.82 seconds.

:55:49. > :55:54.Eilidh Child in Lane six has the Czech athlete on her outside to

:55:55. > :56:06.chase. She has gone off very quickly. Eilidh Child is taking

:56:07. > :56:13.command. I read it at the dough and Hanna Ryzhykova in pursuit. Eilidh

:56:14. > :56:21.Child, forecast to win the race, is running like the favourite. She has

:56:22. > :56:28.control. She is usually so strong in the home straight. It is hers to

:56:29. > :56:33.lose. This has been a very measured performance by Eilidh Child. Hanna

:56:34. > :56:42.Ryzhykova challenging for second place. Eilidh Child upfront. Hanna

:56:43. > :56:53.Ryzhykova snatches it, and she punches the air. Hanna Ryzhykova,

:56:54. > :56:57.the winner. Eilidh Child look so strong, the race was first to lose,

:56:58. > :57:02.and she faltered over the final barrier. That has cost her in the

:57:03. > :57:11.end, a very disappointed Eilidh Child. The surprise winner, Hanna

:57:12. > :57:20.Ryzhykova. A season's best for her. 55 seconds flat. Eilidh Child,

:57:21. > :57:25.55.36. All of the athletes here tired at the end of that race, but

:57:26. > :57:29.there is a smile on the face of Hanna Ryzhykova, who came through

:57:30. > :57:35.from a long way off the pace, to snatch victory in the final 25

:57:36. > :57:40.metres, Steve. Yes, it is difficult to know what to make of that. We are

:57:41. > :57:44.hanging medals around the neck of Eilidh Child, but this is a

:57:45. > :57:49.difficult event, she has been experimenting with her stride

:57:50. > :57:55.pattern. She did attack that pretty well along the back straight. Then,

:57:56. > :58:00.you saw the stutter. She is still pretty good on the home straight, I

:58:01. > :58:05.do not know why it did not hang together so well. She has not been

:58:06. > :58:10.getting under the 55 seconds mark, and if somebody steps up like that,

:58:11. > :58:14.runs 55 flat, you will come under that pressure. That will be a

:58:15. > :58:16.disappointment, she would have expected to wind up. Not what she

:58:17. > :58:41.would have wanted. You can see the wind blowing through

:58:42. > :58:44.your hair, you attacked the first 200 metres, faded down the home

:58:45. > :58:51.straight, though. It was a messy race. I went off a bit hard, that is

:58:52. > :58:56.what I have been working at. I faded a bit on the home straight. I was

:58:57. > :59:02.really messy on a couple of hurdles. If you do not get it smooth, it is

:59:03. > :59:07.all over. I am disappointed. Explain, what do you mean by messy?

:59:08. > :59:16.You are not carrying momentum into the hurdles. Losing your stride.

:59:17. > :59:19.You are not carrying momentum into lose momentum. I backed right off

:59:20. > :59:27.the last hurdle. What have you learned from this race? If I get it

:59:28. > :59:32.smooth, I should run well. I can take a few pointers from that into

:59:33. > :59:35.the next few weeks. You are disappointed, because the first

:59:36. > :59:43.place, we had it hanging around your neck. Explain your thoughts. I am

:59:44. > :59:45.upset about that. I did not know how I would run, I preparation has not

:59:46. > :59:51.gone to plan, but it is about the I would run, I preparation has not

:59:52. > :59:55.points, I am gutted not to get the full point. We have got Perry back

:59:56. > :00:00.in the studio, you are missing that rivalry! I want her to come back as

:00:01. > :00:05.soon as possible! A good recovery to her. It is not the end of the

:00:06. > :00:13.weekend, we have got the relay tomorrow? Yes, if the guys need me,

:00:14. > :00:21.I will step in. We have got a new team, so some of the development

:00:22. > :00:25.athletes can get some experience. A few mistakes from Eilidh Child. The

:00:26. > :00:28.wind is the issue there, I think. Definitely. As we saw in the men's

:00:29. > :00:33.wind is the issue there, I think. 400m hurdles you don't want wind. It

:00:34. > :00:38.makes the race a lot more hard than it is any way. Eilidh looks strong.

:00:39. > :00:43.She's been working on her first 200m. She got out, yes

:00:44. > :00:45.She's been working on her first that she done. It cost her.

:00:46. > :00:49.She's been working on her first Unfortunately, well, the Ukraine

:00:50. > :00:50.come and just saw an opportunity, because that's what happens, when

:00:51. > :00:53.you're in front and you because that's what happens, when

:00:54. > :00:56.what's going on. The athlete because that's what happens, when

:00:57. > :01:01.has their eyes on the athlete ahead and thinking I'm going to catch her.

:01:02. > :01:06.Once Once you stutter into a hurdle, and Eilidh said it there. It's hard

:01:07. > :01:10.to come It's the back. Momentum. Physically it takes a lot more out

:01:11. > :01:14.of you to get you back to speed. Rarely you see someone recover

:01:15. > :01:18.quickly from stuttering and coming back into the race. It's costly. You

:01:19. > :01:19.quickly from stuttering and coming don't want to do that in a 400m

:01:20. > :01:25.hurdle race. don't want to do that in a 400m

:01:26. > :01:27.think I love the way she handled the first part of the race. She went out

:01:28. > :01:31.very committed. They've first part of the race. She went out

:01:32. > :01:37.very hard on that. It's a crucial moment. Round the final bend, you

:01:38. > :01:40.have to keep that as both Perri and Eilidh said, you have to keep the

:01:41. > :01:44.momentum going. Have you to work into the barriers. It comes with

:01:45. > :01:50.confidence sometimes. When you've been changing the way things work,

:01:51. > :01:54.you forget some of the elements of your race. She stated there that she

:01:55. > :01:57.should have gone into the final barrier instead of taking the safer

:01:58. > :02:00.option of changing down. You can understand why she's disappointed.

:02:01. > :02:05.You know what, you can't turn the clock back. In terms of the team

:02:06. > :02:25.scores this is what that does: Plenty more action still to come

:02:26. > :02:28.here from Braunschweig. This is just the start of a fantastic summer of

:02:29. > :03:30.athletics on the BBC. MUSIC

:03:31. > :03:37.It's going to be great. Our British championships, Sunday 29 June from

:03:38. > :03:44.1pm. Places at the European Championships up for grabs. Don't

:03:45. > :03:51.miss that. Slightly below par for Eilidh Child

:03:52. > :03:55.but above par for Daniel Awde. After he spoke to Katherine. You shook

:03:56. > :03:59.your head as you crossed the line. But in commentary they're saying

:04:00. > :04:03.it's a good third place. Yeah, I'm always trying to get a PB every

:04:04. > :04:07.race. If I don't get that, in my mind, I fail. If I'm honest, I'm

:04:08. > :04:12.happy with that. I think, I fixed what I had to do, which I missed in

:04:13. > :04:17.the last few races, which is to take the first 200 -- to attack the first

:04:18. > :04:20.200. I ran blind for 300 metres am I didn't see anyone until the last

:04:21. > :04:24.straight. Yeah, I will have to watch it back and see what happened. Of

:04:25. > :04:30.all the ten events that you used to do as a decathlete, the debate in

:04:31. > :04:34.studio, why the 400 metres? I don't know. I've been toying with the idea

:04:35. > :04:38.for a little while. Over the years a lot of people were saying why don't

:04:39. > :04:41.you give it a go. I listened to what people were saying and have a crack

:04:42. > :04:48.at it. Is it an event you're enjoying? Yeah, I'm really enjoying

:04:49. > :04:54.it. Training is good fun. Having people to run with is good fun.

:04:55. > :04:58.Chris as a coach is great fun. Racing is fun as well. A brief

:04:59. > :05:04.insight into how the team are doing, it's such a mix this year? Yeah,

:05:05. > :05:08.really good. It's been really high spirits. Neil seems to be

:05:09. > :05:12.enthusiastic about this. He gave a great speech yesterday. Hannah, the

:05:13. > :05:14.team captain, a great speech yesterday. Everyone is looking

:05:15. > :05:18.forward to proving themselves this weekend and seeing what we can do.

:05:19. > :05:21.Well done today. Thank you very much. Cheers.

:05:22. > :05:27.Yeah well done to Daniel Awde. Next chance for a man in the British vest

:05:28. > :05:30.is Grice gries in the -- Charlie Grice, who goes in the 1500m.

:05:31. > :05:40.Steve Cram calls the action. I think this is the best quality

:05:41. > :05:49.event at these European Athletics Team Champions, because this guy is

:05:50. > :06:01.in it, Ozbilen. He's been very well. We have got the European e-Tesfaye.

:06:02. > :06:05.Then Lewandowski from Poland, the 800m specialist. You can see what

:06:06. > :06:09.Charlie Grice is up against. There are a few others who have chances.

:06:10. > :06:12.Tactics all important, as ever. Three and three quarter laps of the

:06:13. > :06:18.track. Charlie is drawn on the inside. Carley's been having a great

:06:19. > :06:21.season so far. He got himself secured with his kaement selection

:06:22. > :06:26.with a new PB in the States. Backed that up with an 800 PB in Holland

:06:27. > :06:30.recently. I was chatting to him on Monday. He was delighted with that

:06:31. > :06:37.one, 47 flat. The youngster really is having a good season so far. A

:06:38. > :06:43.big test here though for him, Paula. Really experienced athletes. Ozbilen

:06:44. > :06:49.did this last time. Maybe not as silly as he did last year, but he

:06:50. > :06:56.will make this a good, honest race. Like he said it was great see

:06:57. > :06:59.Charlie come out and get his selection. Still up for grabs for

:07:00. > :07:03.the Europeans, but to get the fast times out of the way and then come

:07:04. > :07:06.into a race like this and really grow tactically, which is what he

:07:07. > :07:09.needs to do. He needs to get in there and learn in races like this.

:07:10. > :07:13.Having said that, Ozbilen has done exactly what he did last year and

:07:14. > :07:20.gone straight out and taken the race out very, very hard. Sitting in

:07:21. > :07:25.second is, or maybe not so young, Tesfaye, the German athlete,

:07:26. > :07:29.originally from Ethiopia. He's been causing controversy here, doubt over

:07:30. > :07:32.his exact age and whether he is taking under 23 sport place as way

:07:33. > :07:37.from athletes by not actually being the 20 years old that he is stating

:07:38. > :07:41.on his passport but rather 23. But he's a very, very outstanding young

:07:42. > :07:46.talent and is growing all the time. He did go out in the German 800m, I

:07:47. > :07:52.think under-20 championships recently with a 24-second first 800

:07:53. > :07:57.and hung on to finish strongly in that race. He isn't afraid to go

:07:58. > :08:01.with Ozbilen here. At the moment, it is only himself able to do that.

:08:02. > :08:07.They're just gradually, sensibly moving back towards them. Carvalho

:08:08. > :08:12.of France there. What happened moving back towards them. Carvalho

:08:13. > :08:17.there? It was the Swedish athlete, you can see him there, Rogestedt.

:08:18. > :08:21.He's run a good 800 recently, just maybe almost falling. He did go down

:08:22. > :08:25.right in front of Charlie. Charlie is in a pretty good place here. The

:08:26. > :08:30.pace has been reasonable. He obviously has got good pace Charlie

:08:31. > :08:34.Grice on the last lap. I hope he can pick up three, four of thesage lets

:08:35. > :08:38.ahead of him. Tesfaye looks very comfortable. Lewandowski moves up.

:08:39. > :08:45.Charlie will know Lewandowski must be a big danger on the last lap

:08:46. > :08:51.here. It's Ozbilen leading, Tesfaye looking behind. Holusa behind him.

:08:52. > :08:56.Grice in a great position here. They take the bell. Charlie's put himself

:08:57. > :08:59.in a really good position here. Covering every move right on the

:09:00. > :09:03.shoulder of Carvalho there. He just needs to hold this and keep

:09:04. > :09:08.something in reserve as he turns into the wind on the final bend. All

:09:09. > :09:12.about typing. Charlie Grice starts to kick. Tesfaye there. Ozbilen

:09:13. > :09:16.won't have the pace but holds the inside there. That's a big attack

:09:17. > :09:20.from Charlie Grice, positive running from the British athlete, Tesfaye

:09:21. > :09:23.moving on to his shoulder. Holusa trying to get back into this.

:09:24. > :09:27.Lewandowski will be a danger, he's in fifth at the moment for Poe

:09:28. > :09:35.London. Grice striking for him. This is a really brave effort, can he

:09:36. > :09:38.last this out? Charlie Grice the youngster with Tesfaye

:09:39. > :09:42.last this out? Charlie Grice the shoulder. Tesfaye kicks on. Charlie

:09:43. > :09:47.has to fight here. The Czech Republic is finishing quickly.

:09:48. > :09:53.Charlie fading. Holusa might get there. Czech Republic get maximum

:09:54. > :09:59.points. Charlie Grice in fifth in the end. Well, well, well. Jeers

:10:00. > :10:03.from the German crowd. I think that was Tesfaye trying to move out to

:10:04. > :10:08.block Holusa. I don't think they have much to shout B he was

:10:09. > :10:11.finishing quickest. Charlie Grice made a brave effort. Too much too

:10:12. > :10:15.soon. He'll learn from that. You have to time it right. Have you to

:10:16. > :10:19.ease your way through that. Charlie had a real go. Hats off for that.

:10:20. > :10:27.Lewandowski finished quickly but was too far away in the last 200 metres.

:10:28. > :10:30.Holusa, who was in the 1,000 m in which there was a good performance

:10:31. > :10:36.from him in that race behind Ozbilen. Just watch this. Holusa is

:10:37. > :10:41.on record as saying he has a big upper body and he's in the afraid to

:10:42. > :10:46.use it as he needs to. What happened there was Tesfaye was losing his

:10:47. > :10:50.legs from under him and wandering across the track and knocked into

:10:51. > :10:55.him. We see he was trying to block him. I think all Holusa did was say

:10:56. > :11:00.hey, I'm here. I'm coming around you. There's plenty of track on the

:11:01. > :11:04.inside. He held his ground. Tesfaye there and Holusa moves wide to move

:11:05. > :11:10.around him. He's in lane three now. He's happy to stay in three. This is

:11:11. > :11:13.not the World Cup, I know Germany are playing later on, but the

:11:14. > :11:17.football stuff comes later. The Czech Republic get the win.

:11:18. > :11:21.Lewandowski third, Carvalho just pips Charlie for fifth place. I

:11:22. > :11:28.think we can have a word with Charlie and see what he thought of

:11:29. > :11:32.that. Good, brave effort from him. Well, Charlie, Steve Cram in

:11:33. > :11:36.commentary says - a good, brave effort. It seemed like you were

:11:37. > :11:40.timing it to perfection, but did you go too Yeah, I soon? Wish I held a

:11:41. > :11:46.bit back. I felt really good at the bell. I thought try and push it on

:11:47. > :49:29.and see what I can do. Just slightly disappointed to get
