:00:52. > :00:58.Hampden Park, the home of Scottish football since 1903. Could you

:00:59. > :01:02.believe that in 1937, nearly 150,000 people back in here to watch

:01:03. > :01:08.Scotland take on England in the British Championships? Scotland won

:01:09. > :01:14.3-1. But this am, it has been transformed into the centrepiece of

:01:15. > :01:17.the 20th Commonwealth Games, hosting athletics. Construction is under

:01:18. > :01:20.way, creating a remarkable track suspended two metres above the

:01:21. > :01:25.hallowed turf as some of the world's best athletes hope to make

:01:26. > :01:30.their own bit of Commonwealth Games history. Here on Scottish soil, a

:01:31. > :01:53.Scottish athlete is going to take the gold. Yes! The crowd are loving

:01:54. > :02:06.this. He wins his first ever Commonwealth title.

:02:07. > :02:17.A whirlwind! Wales have a champion! Just a few miles down the road from

:02:18. > :02:20.Hampden Park, another venue, the Emirates Arena, where track cycling

:02:21. > :02:23.and badminton will take place. But today, it is all about the start of

:02:24. > :02:34.the indoor athletics season. Look at James Dasaolu go!

:02:35. > :02:57.Magnificent. Good afternoon to you and welcome to

:02:58. > :03:02.Sainsbury's Glasgow International Match. In this Commonwealth year, it

:03:03. > :03:06.is the first international sports event in Glasgow. A sell-out crowd

:03:07. > :03:11.are here, with excitement building ahead of those Commonwealth Games.

:03:12. > :03:14.Alongside me, two people who know all about Commonwealth glory. Denise

:03:15. > :03:19.Lewis and Colin Jackson. It was a little time ago when we had those

:03:20. > :03:25.golden moments. Here are a couple of golden oldies. New European and

:03:26. > :03:33.Commonwealth record to the Prince of Wales! She is absolutely smashed her

:03:34. > :03:39.lifetime best with that one. This is a superb demonstration. Colin

:03:40. > :03:48.Jackson is the Commonwealth champion. Denise Lewis, defending

:03:49. > :03:55.her title well. Great form. Powerful through the line, Denise. Don't

:03:56. > :03:59.focus on the bad bits! Let's think about the good bits. The javelin and

:04:00. > :04:04.the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur was one of the highlights of

:04:05. > :04:07.my career. No one saw it coming. I didn't even know I was going to

:04:08. > :04:12.throw it that far. It was a big breakthrough. And it really did

:04:13. > :04:18.launch my international career. There was no going back from that

:04:19. > :04:21.moment. Suddenly, everybody wants to know who you are and what you are

:04:22. > :04:28.about. The Commonwealth Games were a sweet time. Colin, you started in

:04:29. > :04:34.1986 in Scotland. When it was in Edinburgh, many moons ago. It was a

:04:35. > :04:38.real launching for me to the flavour of international competition.

:04:39. > :04:42.Rubbing shoulders with some of the best athletes in the world. I was

:04:43. > :04:47.playing cards with Steve Cram, Daley Thompson etc. It was a huge

:04:48. > :04:53.pleasure, because I was representing Wales, which was very rare. It was a

:04:54. > :04:55.big year for the athlete. The Commonwealth games are sometimes

:04:56. > :05:02.down the pecking order, but it is in Glasgow in six months' time and that

:05:03. > :05:05.will be the focus. It will be. A lot of athletes want to medal at the

:05:06. > :05:10.Europeans as well, but the Commonwealth is a special event, and

:05:11. > :05:14.they have to raise the bar. Let's focus on this afternoon. It is a

:05:15. > :05:16.four way match between Great Britain and Northern Ireland, taking on

:05:17. > :05:23.Scotland, competing on their own for the first time, Commonwealth Select

:05:24. > :06:16.and the USA. This is how it works. Four points for a win.

:06:17. > :06:22.So plenty to whet your appetite. If you want to enhance your viewing

:06:23. > :06:26.enjoyment by interacting on social media, the information is available

:06:27. > :06:31.on screen. Avoid the small minority of idiot out there. The Scottish

:06:32. > :06:37.team are competing here for the first time. We have been speaking to

:06:38. > :06:41.a couple of their athletes. It is a big year for Glasgow and

:06:42. > :06:46.Scotland. Two of the potential stars of the Scottish team, Eilidh Child

:06:47. > :06:50.and Jamie Bowie, are alongside me. You can sense the excitement for

:06:51. > :06:57.Glasgow as we look forward to the Commonwealths. It is exciting. Ever

:06:58. > :07:01.since the bells rang for new year, everybody has got a taste for it.

:07:02. > :07:05.Today's sell-out crowd shows that everyone wants to get behind the

:07:06. > :07:08.sport. There is every chance that you will be the poster girl for the

:07:09. > :07:14.event after what you achieved last year. Yeah, no pressure! But I

:07:15. > :07:21.really want to enjoy the whole experience. It is just about

:07:22. > :07:24.embracing it and enjoying the time we are going to have. It is not

:07:25. > :07:28.often that you get a home Commonwealth Games. Jamie, your

:07:29. > :07:32.timing is good, because you have run the second fastest 400m indoors ever

:07:33. > :07:38.for a Scottish athlete. You could not have timed it better. Yeah, last

:07:39. > :07:43.week was my warm-up event. So I want to get out today and take advantage

:07:44. > :07:48.of a home crowd, get a taster for Hampden Park. Hopefully, I get a

:07:49. > :07:52.good lane. I have just got to go for it. Knowing it was the Commonwealth

:07:53. > :07:59.Games in your home country, has that renew an added edge? Definitely.

:08:00. > :08:03.Last year, we were starting to get more excited, training getting more

:08:04. > :08:10.focused. This year is the year that you need to step up. 2014 has

:08:11. > :08:15.arrived. Eilidh Child, Jovetic captain today. Are you going to give

:08:16. > :08:20.the crowd something to cheer about? Yeah, hopefully, we can put on a

:08:21. > :08:23.good show. Hopefully, the Scots will have a few surprises. Enjoy the

:08:24. > :08:29.afternoon and good luck for the Commonwealth Games.

:08:30. > :08:31.Just a small taste of the atmosphere that awaits Scottish athletes when

:08:32. > :08:35.they go to Hampden Park in six months' time. This will be the

:08:36. > :08:40.badminton arena for the Commonwealth Games. But this afternoon, we have a

:08:41. > :08:45.specially erected hydraulic track which then goes back down again. It

:08:46. > :08:49.is a multi-sports venue. An plastic crowd. Up there in the gods are our

:08:50. > :08:52.commentary teams. Good afternoon to them.

:08:53. > :09:28.Thank you, Jonathan. We start with a very high-quality

:09:29. > :09:29.women's 400m. I said this is a very high-quality field. Regina George

:09:30. > :09:35.and Francena McCorory come here in good form. It is a first race for

:09:36. > :09:38.Eilidh Child. She had such a good season last year. She will be

:09:39. > :09:50.contesting the 400 metre hurdles at the Commonwealth Games later in the

:09:51. > :10:02.year. George ran her second fastest race recently, and she has a lot of

:10:03. > :10:10.strength. She is effectively on the inside in lane three. Victoria

:10:11. > :10:17.Ohuruogu is just inside of her. What an opportunity for her. She was part

:10:18. > :10:25.of our 4 x 400 relay squad in Moscow, gaining a bit of experience.

:10:26. > :10:34.She is a huge talent, coached by the person who coached her older sister.

:10:35. > :10:42.And Francena McCorory ran a quick 300 metres not long ago. She was not

:10:43. > :10:48.far off her personal best for that distance. And Eilidh Child on the

:10:49. > :10:54.outside. The Scots will be hoping she can lead them to victory, but it

:10:55. > :11:04.will be tough. Huge cheer for the Scottish captain. What a year

:11:05. > :11:16.beckons for her. There will be a sell-out crowd for every day of the

:11:17. > :11:21.athletics, I'm sure. The first lap is going to be crucial, because

:11:22. > :11:31.George and Francena McCorory will want to get in control. Eilidh Child

:11:32. > :11:37.will be perhaps wise, as she will not have as much pace as them over

:11:38. > :11:43.the first 200m, but who will control this on the first lap? The Nigerian

:11:44. > :11:49.is representing from the Commonwealth team and the American.

:11:50. > :11:54.But watch for Eilidh Child on the second lap. Many of our sprinters

:11:55. > :12:00.have been away in South Africa, training. Eilidh has been there as

:12:01. > :12:10.well. By all accounts, she is in good shape. The Scottish record was

:12:11. > :12:25.set by her when she won the silver medal at the European indoors last

:12:26. > :12:31.year. So, two lapse. Women's 400m. Nice, clean start. Eilidh Child

:12:32. > :12:38.started quick on the outside. George also going quick in lane three. She

:12:39. > :12:47.looks as though she has got through the first 150m the quickest. Eilidh

:12:48. > :12:53.Child can come across and control. That is a good spot to be in. Well

:12:54. > :13:02.done to get ahead of the American. What strength has Eilidh Child got?

:13:03. > :13:05.Can she run down the Nigerian? Victoria Ohuruogu are struggling for

:13:06. > :13:11.pace at the moment. Regina George is looking strong at the front. George

:13:12. > :13:17.just starting to tire, as is Eilidh Child. The American is going to get

:13:18. > :13:22.this. Francena McCorory, 400m specialist, takes it. George in

:13:23. > :13:27.second, Ohuruogu third. And Eilidh Child perhaps paying for that

:13:28. > :13:32.aggressive first 200. You have to be careful. She probably did the right

:13:33. > :13:51.thing. You have got to get involved here. Lots of lactic acid in the

:13:52. > :13:59.legs for all of the athletes there. Denise, that was an opener for

:14:00. > :14:03.Eilidh. It was always going to be an interesting race. Like you said,

:14:04. > :14:10.Regina George absolutely topped that pace out. As she comes into the

:14:11. > :14:16.final stages, those legs are looking very heavy. It was a good race from

:14:17. > :14:21.Francena McCorory, who had a good season last year. She timed that

:14:22. > :14:29.race to perfection and comes through to take the win. Unfortunately,

:14:30. > :14:35.Eilidh knew she had to command that first 200m. She was not quite there.

:14:36. > :14:39.But I am sure she will be relatively happy with the fact that she has got

:14:40. > :14:50.those cobwebs out of the legs. She has got her first race out of the

:14:51. > :14:56.way. Third place for her. Francena McCorory of the United States

:14:57. > :15:09.getting maximum points. 51.79. A good race from her. I think Eilidh

:15:10. > :15:15.Child will be disappointed with that. 53.69. She really did attack

:15:16. > :15:26.it. When you ran here last year you did

:15:27. > :15:32.not quite set the world alight. You are never sure what you are going to

:15:33. > :15:38.do. I said I was not bothered about times and I wanted to go out from

:15:39. > :15:43.the start but I think I went out a bit too hard and died a bit of a

:15:44. > :15:48.death coming home, hopefully the more I do, the more my legs can hold

:15:49. > :15:54.on a bit longer. What is the plan from here? Keep doing more indoors

:15:55. > :16:01.and aim for the world indoor Championships. You grew in huge

:16:02. > :16:08.leaps last year, at the end taking a motor in the European indoors. --

:16:09. > :16:13.taking a medal. It gave me so much confidence. I knew it would all come

:16:14. > :16:23.together. All the best. STUDIO: A couple of events took

:16:24. > :16:28.place before we just came on the air. The first was the women's

:16:29. > :16:35.1500m. STEVE CRAM: Takes up the commentary.

:16:36. > :16:46.STEVE CRAM: Anderson of the USA was in second place. Military of

:16:47. > :16:51.Scotland in third. The world bronze medallist from Moscow last year, she

:16:52. > :17:01.would have been the favourite when they started. Showing a bit of class

:17:02. > :17:09.here. She has had such a cracking year outdoors. A personal best at

:17:10. > :17:14.800. And Obiri is making this a bit of a long run. I am surprised that

:17:15. > :17:27.the American couldn't have gone with her at this stage. Obiri has only

:17:28. > :17:37.been back from Kenya 48 hours. Hellen Obiri, the former world

:17:38. > :17:41.champion at 3000m. Anderson can be quick over the last 200m but that is

:17:42. > :17:48.a big gap the American has to make up. Obiri looking a little bit

:17:49. > :17:56.ragged. A good lead for her. The American doing her best. So Hellen

:17:57. > :18:05.Obiri, who one is corresponding race last year, in top form. Obiri comes

:18:06. > :18:15.a way to take maximum points. A very decent time given the slow start. 4:

:18:16. > :18:23.ten. Jemma Simpson is having to bring up the rear. She will be a bit

:18:24. > :18:36.disappointed with that. A new stadium record, 4: 10.2.

:18:37. > :18:57.STUDIO: Hastings for the United States, Henry for Great Britain.

:18:58. > :19:04.Annabel Lewis also for Great Britain. She is looking very well at

:19:05. > :19:08.the moment. Desiree Henry comes through to take it for the

:19:09. > :19:19.Commonwealth. The Enfield and Haringey athlete. Her time was

:19:20. > :19:25.17.33, pretty good. A good victory for the Commonwealth, for the

:19:26. > :19:31.British athlete. That is a good win over Natasha Hastings, who is a 400m

:19:32. > :19:41.specialist. But still good for Desiree Henry. Full points for

:19:42. > :19:51.Desiree Henry for the Commonwealth today.

:19:52. > :19:57.STUDIO: A little bit earlier on today it was a case for the new

:19:58. > :20:01.against the old. 15-year-old Sarah was from Australia waited until the

:20:02. > :20:10.fifth round before she let out to five point 28, I am sorry, 4.28

:20:11. > :20:15.metres. That was better than she had ever jumped, indoors or out. So the

:20:16. > :20:22.15-year-old looking towards the experience of 29-year-old Steph

:20:23. > :20:28.Green, Para -- Paralympic silver medallist. That came in the very

:20:29. > :20:36.first round, just short of a British record. That was her best jump of

:20:37. > :20:39.the day. 4.83 when it comfortably ahead of the young Australian, but

:20:40. > :20:43.certainly the Australian has a lot of potential for the future. Her

:20:44. > :20:47.coach must be delighted with that result. So first blood of the day

:20:48. > :21:23.went to Scotland's Stefanie Read. COMMENTATOR: Now the men's 400m. A

:21:24. > :21:30.couple of the best of Britain as well, Jamie Bogie representing

:21:31. > :21:46.Scotland. And Nigel Levine for Great Britain. -- Jamie Bowie. David

:21:47. > :21:55.Verburg is just five foot six. He says he is not a great starter but

:21:56. > :22:01.he is a quality athlete. Jamie Bowie is coming on leaps and bounds

:22:02. > :22:10.outdoors and was hard done by in the Championships last year. Chris Brown

:22:11. > :22:15.knows all about success. He was part of the quartet which beat the United

:22:16. > :22:22.States in the relay in the Olympics. He is running later on in the relay

:22:23. > :22:30.here. And Nigel Levine, who has been the outdoor champion several times.

:22:31. > :22:34.So a high-quality field. I know that the quartet from the Bahamas is

:22:35. > :22:39.targeting an indoor world record in the four x 400 later on. So I wonder

:22:40. > :22:49.if Chris Brown is going to save himself just a little bit.

:22:50. > :23:02.35-year-old legs now, the man second to the outside. So it is David

:23:03. > :23:07.Verburg of the United States, Jamie Bowie, Nigel Levine and Chris Brown.

:23:08. > :23:22.400m. David Verburg says he's not a quick

:23:23. > :23:31.starter but he is up there alongside Bowie. Chris Brown needing these are

:23:32. > :23:48.duller -- the shoulder of Nigel Levine. Nigel Levine settles between

:23:49. > :23:51.them as the bell goes. Brown out in front is looking for that relay

:23:52. > :24:00.success later on and perhaps of the world record. To start the afternoon

:24:01. > :24:14.well, will he get a victory? Brown gets the victory. Levine. Chris

:24:15. > :24:20.Brown is an exceptional indoor man. He has been champion before. Nigel

:24:21. > :24:28.Levine put in a decent performance. And excellent performance for this

:24:29. > :24:33.time of the season. Colin Brown runs a completely controlled race. Gets

:24:34. > :24:41.to the 200m mark and slows the pace slowly down. So if anyone is going

:24:42. > :24:45.to go past they really have to work hard. He just accelerates down the

:24:46. > :24:50.back straight, approaches into this corner, good control. He can have a

:24:51. > :24:57.look at the screens now to see anybody is attacking, can afford to

:24:58. > :25:05.relax and then opens his stride. A very good performance indeed. Jamie

:25:06. > :25:15.Bowie there as a personal best with that run. 46.65. And we mentioned

:25:16. > :25:20.the very powerful quartet from the Bahamas who will be doing the relay

:25:21. > :25:27.later on. I think perhaps the Commonwealth team will be hard to

:25:28. > :25:33.beat. But Verburg was not comfortable there, the American

:25:34. > :25:38.trailing in fourth place. Chris Brown has a stadium record. There

:25:39. > :25:49.will be a fewer of those in this new arena. -- a few of those.

:25:50. > :25:55.Holly Bleasdale, the British record-holder and number one on the

:25:56. > :25:57.pole-vault, we will see her later on. She started the season well with

:25:58. > :26:10.a European indoor title. COMMENTATOR: All or nothing now for

:26:11. > :26:13.Holly Bleasdale. Oh, she has got it. It is called for Great Britain.

:26:14. > :26:17.Holly Bleasdale is the champion. Wonderful stuff. -- it is a gold

:26:18. > :26:29.medal. COMMENTATOR: So a transport Mary

:26:30. > :26:35.Saxer to take this at the second attempt. 4.42 metres. Holly

:26:36. > :26:42.Bleasdale has had one failure as well. She gets it. A little bit slow

:26:43. > :26:47.and sluggish but it was solid. As the bar gets higher, we will see her

:26:48. > :26:57.go on stiffer poles. Holly Bleasdale now. 4.62m at the second attempt.

:26:58. > :27:01.That is good. And she really has taken a stronger hold on this

:27:02. > :27:07.competition now. Mary Saxer is really up against it. She has had

:27:08. > :27:13.one failure at this height. That is very good from Holly Bleasdale.

:27:14. > :27:20.4.61m she cleared earlier on this year, will later on last year,

:27:21. > :27:27.should I say. Four point 61 she cleared. A little bit slower over

:27:28. > :27:29.the last couple of strides but she settles herself and then powers at

:27:30. > :27:40.the bar. Well clear in the end for the

:27:41. > :27:46.British number one. Scott Simpson, her coach, the architect of what is

:27:47. > :27:51.so far so good. So Holly Bleasdale on good form.

:27:52. > :27:59.Denise, she has almost always been playing catch-up on what she jumped

:28:00. > :28:04.a couple of seasons ago. When you jump as big as she did, there is

:28:05. > :28:08.expectation that she just seems the outdoor season will just flow,

:28:09. > :28:12.everything will go well, and it did not quite work out for her, and I

:28:13. > :28:18.think that expectation just got the better of her. Last year she got the

:28:19. > :28:22.really bad Achilles and back injuries. It has probably allowed

:28:23. > :28:28.her to settle herself. She has moved her training base back to Cardiff

:28:29. > :28:37.and she seems to be a happier Holly Bleasdale. And she changed her

:28:38. > :28:43.coach. It was a difficult year in lots of ways. Yes, and a brave

:28:44. > :28:53.decision to leave that coach because he was so well respected. Saying,

:28:54. > :29:03.no, I'm going to skip week -- stick with what I know. Next on track it

:29:04. > :29:06.is the British men's champion. Always good to see you and to daily

:29:07. > :29:11.while leading the Great Britain team. Yes, the first international

:29:12. > :29:16.competition of 2014 and it would be great if everyone puts their mark

:29:17. > :29:21.out there and start as they mean to go one for the season. A double

:29:22. > :29:26.major championships year, outdoors and indoors as well. Describe it

:29:27. > :29:31.from an athlete's perspective, coming into a year like this. Yes,

:29:32. > :29:36.there was lots of opportunity. The indoor competition for many people

:29:37. > :29:40.is a stepping stone to see how their winter is progressing so far. They

:29:41. > :29:43.will not be expecting to set the world alight today but they are

:29:44. > :29:49.looking to make solid performances and to go on to the world indoors

:29:50. > :29:56.later on the sea in Poland. What do you think the year will hold for

:29:57. > :30:02.you? There are three major championships I would like to be

:30:03. > :30:08.going to. And we had the Commonwealth games previously in

:30:09. > :30:10.Delhi where I will be -- where I won the silver medal. I hope it goes

:30:11. > :30:25.well this year. Yes, a proud day for Mr Sharman. I

:30:26. > :30:28.wonder what he think about how people are doing so far, although it

:30:29. > :30:46.is not his responsibility. A long way to go, as they say. This

:30:47. > :30:51.is going to be an interesting race for will Sharman. Let's look at the

:30:52. > :31:27.full line-up. The UK champion from last year is a

:31:28. > :31:36.good runner. Jeff Porter is of course the husband of Tiffany

:31:37. > :31:43.Porter. Roger Skedd is from Sheffield, representing Scotland. He

:31:44. > :31:54.has never broken eight seconds for the 60m hurdles. I think it will be

:31:55. > :32:04.close between Gianni Frankis and Sharman. The British team captain

:32:05. > :32:07.wants to start this year off well. He was talking about how it is a big

:32:08. > :32:15.thing to avoid injuries, stay healthy. He is just keeping his body

:32:16. > :32:27.fit. He said he is very happy with where he is at this stage of the

:32:28. > :32:36.year. 60m hurdles indoors. No room for error. Fastest in the world this

:32:37. > :33:06.year so far, incidentally. Sharman gets a very good start. It

:33:07. > :33:19.is going to be very tight. Sharman might have what it! -- got it! It is

:33:20. > :33:24.all about that lean. The photo finish will decide this. Porter got

:33:25. > :33:29.a good start, but Sharman was with him all the way. It will be a

:33:30. > :33:34.personal best for Will Sharman, no doubt. What did he get the Vic

:33:35. > :33:38.three? We will look at the replay in a minute. Colin? I knew you would

:33:39. > :33:43.leave me to try and clear this up. Let's have a look at Will Sharman.

:33:44. > :33:56.He has come out of a cracking indoor season. He has been very competitive

:33:57. > :34:00.earlier in the year. You are not used to having pressure around you,

:34:01. > :34:09.but he has worked hard and I think he may just have got it. We are both

:34:10. > :34:16.wrong. Looking at you, I agree. But we have just been given the official

:34:17. > :34:24.result, and Porter has been given it by a hundredth of a second. Feels

:34:25. > :34:31.more like 1000th of a second. That picture does not help us. But it is

:34:32. > :34:35.a personal best for Sharman, right up there with Porter. Really good

:34:36. > :34:42.start. He is out of the blocks really well, and determined. He is

:34:43. > :34:46.nice and strong, and still light. When he clobbered that barrier, it

:34:47. > :34:51.made no effect. He still managed to keep focused, working into every

:34:52. > :34:57.barrier. There is lots of noise around him, but he has stuck with

:34:58. > :35:07.it. He just missed out, but he at least was rewarded with a personal

:35:08. > :35:21.best. From his face, he knew more than we did. Just a hint of

:35:22. > :35:36.resignation. Let's see how that affects things.

:35:37. > :35:42.Just before we came on air, there was a proud and emotional moment for

:35:43. > :35:47.Lynsey Sharp of Scotland as she received her gold medal for the

:35:48. > :35:52.European Championships over 100m, back in 2012. The Russian won it,

:35:53. > :35:56.but was then banned for a doping violation. The emotional moment

:35:57. > :36:08.was, that was her dad, giving her the medal. She won -- afterwards,

:36:09. > :36:12.she spoke to Phil. That was an emotional moment on the

:36:13. > :36:18.podium, and one we all enjoyed. How did you enjoy it? It was a total

:36:19. > :36:22.surprise. I was not expecting that at all. I was overwhelmed with

:36:23. > :36:26.emotion. I didn't know what to do or think. To look around and see

:36:27. > :36:30.everyone standing up for the national anthem was amazing. Thank

:36:31. > :36:35.you to everyone. It has been a long time coming, but it was deserved.

:36:36. > :36:41.Can we have a look at the medal? How proud are you of that achievement?

:36:42. > :36:44.So proud. Since then, I have had a bit of an injury, so it makes it

:36:45. > :36:54.more special to look back and think how amazing 2012 was. And now you

:36:55. > :36:58.are tried to fight back from injury and come back in Glasgow? Yeah, I

:36:59. > :37:04.have just come back from South Africa after training. It is looking

:37:05. > :37:07.good. Tell me what your thoughts were when you were standing on the

:37:08. > :37:11.podium, with the anthem playing. Does it at all make-up for not

:37:12. > :37:18.having the opportunity where you were competing in the race for the

:37:19. > :37:24.Europeans? Yeah, it was a bit strange, so now it is really nice to

:37:25. > :37:29.have a British crowd in the stadium. We are all proud of you.

:37:30. > :37:34.Congratulations. The women's 800m is coming up

:37:35. > :37:37.later. No Lynsey Sharp, but she will have to be in action in the 800m in

:37:38. > :37:44.the Commonwealth Games in six months' time, the 20th Commonwealth

:37:45. > :37:47.Games. Hamilton in Canada first hosted what

:37:48. > :37:51.was known as a British Empire games back in 1930 stock over the years,

:37:52. > :37:57.they have grown considerably. Only 400 athletes from 11 countries took

:37:58. > :38:03.part then, competing in just expose, whereas 2014 will see 4500 athletes

:38:04. > :38:08.compete from 261 medals. Four years ago in Delhi, the home nation saw

:38:09. > :38:15.the likes of Tom Daley, Dai Greene and Scotland's Hannah Miley all

:38:16. > :38:18.return with golds. Just six months to go. Time to say

:38:19. > :38:26.good afternoon now to one of our gold medal winning pundits, Paula

:38:27. > :38:29.Radcliffe. This was Paula's year. She has waited so long for the

:38:30. > :38:39.chance to win a gold, and what a place it would be for her to do it.

:38:40. > :38:46.Come on, this is the gold medal she deserves! She wins it! She takes the

:38:47. > :38:50.title. A scintillating run by Paula Radcliffe, one of the best pieces of

:38:51. > :38:57.distance racing you are ever likely to see. That was a wonderful night.

:38:58. > :39:02.I was competing that night. Your memories of that evening? Just very

:39:03. > :39:07.special. Even re-watching it now, it does not feel that long ago. It

:39:08. > :39:12.makes the hairs on my arm stand up again to remember how special it was

:39:13. > :39:17.in that stadium in Manchester and to have the crowd supporting me on each

:39:18. > :39:22.lap of the track. I don't think any of the athletes were expecting that

:39:23. > :39:27.fanatic hometown support. That was the thing they probably were

:39:28. > :39:33.expecting going into London in 2012, because of what happened in

:39:34. > :39:35.Manchester. But for us, it was a special surprise. Standing on the

:39:36. > :39:39.rostrum as well, the whole stadium was handing up, singing with you.

:39:40. > :39:45.They are memories I will treasure for ever. One athlete who will not

:39:46. > :39:50.be at the -- at Glasgow is Jess Ennis, unfortunately. You are both

:39:51. > :39:54.mums who have come back to compete. Out of woollies before her to make a

:39:55. > :40:01.comeback? -- out of Will it be for her? Generally, it is just about

:40:02. > :40:07.organising yourself and getting out there and doing it. Being a mum will

:40:08. > :40:12.not be an issue. I did not find it difficult making that adjustment

:40:13. > :40:15.between now and mummy and being on the track, concentrating on

:40:16. > :40:21.training. That will not be the issue. The seven events are getting

:40:22. > :40:24.back to the shape we expect to jest to be in. She will want to be

:40:25. > :40:30.winning again. That is the challenge. But she has missed a long

:40:31. > :40:34.time. She missed last year because of injury. She will miss this year

:40:35. > :40:42.as well. That is a lot of conditioning work. And a lot of

:40:43. > :40:45.competition time. That, more than the nine-month that will change

:40:46. > :40:49.through the pregnancy, it will be that time away from competition and

:40:50. > :40:54.getting back in. The pregnancy is a good thing. She will come back happy

:40:55. > :40:59.and fulfilled. If she is motivated to come out and attack it, she will

:41:00. > :41:02.find a way to put it together. It is just whether she will have had too

:41:03. > :41:07.long away from competition. I don't think she will. Next, the women's

:41:08. > :41:12.60m hurdles. We have just been her husband in action, Jeff Porter. Now

:41:13. > :41:20.it is time to see Tiffany Porter. Yes, Jeff Porter won a moment ago.

:41:21. > :41:34.Can Tiffany Porter win now for Great Britain?

:41:35. > :41:45.Another high-quality field, led by the world championship bronze

:41:46. > :41:51.medallist. It was a fantastic moment for her in Moscow in August. First

:41:52. > :41:56.success in that event for Great Britain in the world championship

:41:57. > :42:03.for many years. Nia Ali, US indoor championship last year. One of a

:42:04. > :42:10.huge group of talented women sprinters from the United States.

:42:11. > :42:21.Gemma Werrett, Scottish record-holder. We will see if she

:42:22. > :42:27.can get close to that record here. And Andrea Bliss, semifinalist in

:42:28. > :42:40.the hurdles in Moscow. Just missed out on a medal in the Commonwealth

:42:41. > :42:45.Games four years ago. So, the arena full-size and again --

:42:46. > :43:11.it falls silent again. The women's 60m hurdles. You can't

:43:12. > :43:16.afford a single mistake. There was a stumble from Porter, hitting the

:43:17. > :43:23.first hurdle had. That lets Nia Ali getaway. Alice strolls over. She

:43:24. > :43:28.knew that mistake cost her. Just as the gun went. It is such a short

:43:29. > :43:36.distance that one mistake will cost you. That was all it took. Porter

:43:37. > :43:39.knows where that race was lost. It is a crucial part of the race. When

:43:40. > :43:44.you accelerate into that first hurdle, you don't want to make any

:43:45. > :43:47.mistake. If you clobber that first barrier with your leg, it stops you

:43:48. > :43:54.dead in your tracks. Tiffany Porter went out OK. She did not have an

:43:55. > :43:57.electric start. But as soon as she smashed into that first hurdle, from

:43:58. > :44:04.then, it is about recovery and as you say, there is no room for

:44:05. > :44:14.errors. You have to attack that first hurdle and hit it clean, not

:44:15. > :44:19.like this. If you are reaching for that hurdle, you catch it on a

:44:20. > :44:23.straight leg and it is a nightmare. I have done it on numerous occasions

:44:24. > :44:34.myself, so I know what it feels like for Tiffany. Knocks her straight

:44:35. > :44:39.back. She has to settle into a rhythm, which is about now, but

:44:40. > :44:52.unfortunately, you have only got one hurdle left. No time to make up any

:44:53. > :44:55.gap. One up to Mr Porter. Tiffany Porter could not repeat the victory

:44:56. > :45:15.of her husband, Jeff. We have already seen Holly Bleasdale

:45:16. > :45:21.go clear at 4.52 and then 4.62. His a third attempt at 4.72, which would

:45:22. > :45:24.have been the indoor European Championship qualifying standard,

:45:25. > :45:30.but that is not to be. But she has maximum points for Great Britain and

:45:31. > :45:37.Blackburn Harriers. There is the result. 4.62, a new stadium record.

:45:38. > :45:48.Mary Saxer is second in the world this year.

:45:49. > :45:57.So the long jump, with Shara Proctor. We have Jazmin Sawyers in

:45:58. > :46:04.the lead at the moment. She has jumped further. A solid start for

:46:05. > :46:10.Shara Proctor. Six in the World Championships in 2009, and since

:46:11. > :46:17.then, she has represented Great Britain with some distinction, it

:46:18. > :46:21.has to be said. Not a bad take-off but better to come, I am sure,

:46:22. > :46:27.during the six rounds of competition. This is only the first

:46:28. > :46:36.round. There is the overall situation. Commonwealth Select have

:46:37. > :46:41.extended their lead outside the United States and over the rest that

:46:42. > :46:42.Great Britain and Northern Ireland creeping up on the United States,

:46:43. > :46:56.and Scotland still in fourth place. Mr and Mrs Porter. Victory for Jeff

:46:57. > :47:01.but you could not follow up as you hit the first hurdle. What happened?

:47:02. > :47:10.I am not sure. I will have to have a look. It was a close one with

:47:11. > :47:14.Sharman. It was. I am happy about it so I'm looking forward to the next

:47:15. > :47:24.one. How difficult or pleasurable is it for you to watch your wife

:47:25. > :47:30.compete? It is always difficult to watch her compete, regardless of how

:47:31. > :47:37.I did. I always feel like I want to do it for her. And he is here to

:47:38. > :47:44.support you always in all events. Yes, and we support each other.

:47:45. > :47:51.Hopefully that was just a blip. On to the next.

:47:52. > :47:58.Note blip for Holly Bleasdale. Winner of the pole vault. Satisfied?

:47:59. > :48:04.Yes, I am really happy to just go out there and have fun. A season's

:48:05. > :48:11.best and I am just really happy to be back. Last summer must have been

:48:12. > :48:15.frustrating. Yes, to watch the world champions competing Waller was at

:48:16. > :48:20.home injured, it was very frustrating. But I cracked on with

:48:21. > :48:27.my rehab and I am ready to go. You jumped 4.62. Tell us what you are

:48:28. > :48:31.doing. I saw an interview when you said you were trying to change

:48:32. > :48:37.tending is last year and now you are just focusing on one. I am trying to

:48:38. > :48:41.make sure my hips keep rolling over the whole time. That was really good

:48:42. > :48:47.jumping. I have just come back from a training camp and we are trying to

:48:48. > :48:51.iron a few things out. I was a bit rusty today but by the end of it I

:48:52. > :48:59.got into the groove and we are happy with the progress I have made. You

:49:00. > :49:04.seem to be so much more relaxed. Are you in a better mental state? Yes,

:49:05. > :49:09.last year I was really nervous and I felt loads of pressure. I was not

:49:10. > :49:14.really enjoying it. I was just going out and hoping I jumped high and

:49:15. > :49:19.when I didn't I was disappointed. But now I am just enjoying it. I am

:49:20. > :49:25.happy to be back and that is the best thing. Staying healthy, and

:49:26. > :49:28.living the things that you love. And probably not thinking so much about

:49:29. > :49:37.the magical five metre jump, perhaps? Yes, just taking it as it

:49:38. > :49:42.comes. Just enjoying it and having fun is the best way I could have

:49:43. > :49:46.jumped high. Good luck for the rest of the season. Next up, the men's

:49:47. > :49:57.T44 60m. COMMENTATOR: There is Great

:49:58. > :50:02.Britain's representative, Michael Poulton, from Saint Mary 's in

:50:03. > :50:07.Richmond. He replaces the Paralympic champion Johnnie Peacock in this

:50:08. > :50:14.event. He goes on the inside, then the favourite, Richard Browne of the

:50:15. > :50:20.USA. Arnu Fourie of South Africa and then Felix Streng from Germany. He

:50:21. > :50:30.is a guest in this competition. Four lower leg amputees. Notice, no

:50:31. > :50:36.amputation for Michael Poulton. It is single leg below the knee or

:50:37. > :50:48.physical disability resulting in a similar movement pattern. Richard

:50:49. > :50:55.Browne is six for -- six foot 4.5. He needs to run 6.75 or quicker to

:50:56. > :51:04.qualify for the next competition. Arnu Fourie, Paralympic gold

:51:05. > :51:10.medallist. He is always there or thereabouts in Paralympic finals.

:51:11. > :51:15.And finally, Felix Streng of Germany, double world junior games

:51:16. > :51:24.sprint champion in 2013. He is only 18 years old. A great prospect for

:51:25. > :51:31.the future. This should be a highly competitive race. It all depends, I

:51:32. > :51:34.think, on how Richard Browne gets out at the start. Anything could

:51:35. > :51:45.happen. It could be very fast indeed. The men's T44 60m.

:51:46. > :52:07.Poulton, , Fourie and Streng. -- and Poulton.

:52:08. > :52:16.A bit of a wobble thereby Poulton. Richard Browne got away quickly.

:52:17. > :52:30.Fourie in second place. Streng third. Browne flew over the last 30

:52:31. > :52:33.metres. He has been given a 7.51. It is not particularly quick. He needs

:52:34. > :52:40.to do work on the middle portion of the race. Michael Poulton was

:52:41. > :52:44.absolutely left in the blocks. Fourie and Browne were almost away

:52:45. > :52:53.together. Then those two beginning to pull away. Browne extending his

:52:54. > :53:02.lead to about 2.5m by the time they reached the line. Good starter from

:53:03. > :53:09.a man so tall. The same height as the Usain Bolt. Somewhere on his

:53:10. > :53:16.body, he has a tattoo of a padlock and a chain. Somewhere near his

:53:17. > :53:22.neck, apparently, and it signifies the day he was married, the 5th of

:53:23. > :53:31.May, 2011. Certainly a very good win it here in Glasgow, when it

:53:32. > :53:34.comfortably. -- he won it comfortably. A season's best

:53:35. > :53:58.performance by the American. There is the current situation in

:53:59. > :54:03.terms of the team standings after nine events. Much closer at the top

:54:04. > :54:06.of the table. A single point between the Commonwealth, who have done very

:54:07. > :54:11.well since the start of this meeting, ahead of the United

:54:12. > :54:14.States, and then Great Britain and Northern Ireland over 20 points now.

:54:15. > :54:18.They are catching slowly. We have had that one individual victory by

:54:19. > :54:22.Holly Bleasdale. And Scotland now in fourth place.

:54:23. > :54:35.We are going to take a break now from proceedings to pay tribute to a

:54:36. > :54:40.great British athlete who died recently. I remember watching him in

:54:41. > :54:46.the Great North Run and he was a great athlete but there was much

:54:47. > :54:54.more to him than that. Sir Chris chat away once commented he never

:54:55. > :55:05.made his mind up what he wanted to do in life. Global impact made light

:55:06. > :55:12.of longevity. Twice and impact, there was one defining year in his

:55:13. > :55:20.sporting life, when he won gold over three miles in the Empire Games. Two

:55:21. > :55:26.years earlier in Oxford he had helped lift Roger Bannister to

:55:27. > :55:32.immortal heights. In October of that year, bathed in a white City

:55:33. > :55:38.searchlight, watched by an estimated audience of 2 million, he set a

:55:39. > :55:42.world record of his own, beating a Russian athlete at a time when the

:55:43. > :55:48.Cold War was burning hot. It's so resonated with the British public

:55:49. > :55:52.that Christopher Chataway and not Bannister would be named the first

:55:53. > :55:59.BBC sports personality of the year, at the end of 1954. Then he became

:56:00. > :56:06.ITN's first newsreader, and later a reporter for the BBC's panorama. In

:56:07. > :56:10.1954, he was first selected to the Commons as a Conservative MP, and as

:56:11. > :56:15.a minister in Edward Heath's Government, introduced commercial

:56:16. > :56:21.radio, before leaving in 1974 for a successful business career. He was

:56:22. > :56:26.knighted in 1995 for services to the aviation industry. He were still

:56:27. > :56:30.taking half marathons into his 80s. One of his six children said the

:56:31. > :56:38.family had been struck by his amazing qualities of strength.

:56:39. > :56:42.Humility and strength allied to unshakeable determination and

:56:43. > :56:46.abundant talent, which for a golden period in the 1950s, made

:56:47. > :56:55.Christopher Chataway one of the world's greatest athletes.

:56:56. > :57:05.Great man. Steve Cram is in the commentary box. You knew Chris

:57:06. > :57:11.pretty well. That film shows what a remarkable man he was. He was just a

:57:12. > :57:19.great athlete. I think he was described wins as a Renaissance man.

:57:20. > :57:24.He never lost his love for athletics. He was the first real TV

:57:25. > :57:30.athlete. If you think about that race with the spotlight and cuts. My

:57:31. > :57:39.coach used to show me film of that sort of thing and that was in the

:57:40. > :57:47.October of that year. He won the first sports personality of the year

:57:48. > :57:51.despite Bannister's successes. Chat away was key to his successes. He

:57:52. > :57:58.was part of a great era of British athletics. He retired at 25. He used

:57:59. > :58:03.to smoke during most of his career. He did not train that hard but he

:58:04. > :58:09.was a talent. I was a bit embarrassed, so was Brendan, when at

:58:10. > :58:18.the age of 75 he ran an hour 39 for 30 miles of the Great North Run. I

:58:19. > :58:21.think 50 million people actually watched that race when he broke the

:58:22. > :58:26.world record. Everyone remembers the role he played in the four-minute

:58:27. > :58:32.mile. Did you get a chance to chat him about that, when Bannister broke

:58:33. > :58:38.that barrier? He was a modest man and always played down his role in

:58:39. > :58:45.that. Bannister was the opposite. He would talk particularly about

:58:46. > :58:49.Christopher Chataway on the third lap helping him go through that

:58:50. > :58:55.barrier. Chris used to play it down a little bit but they were of an

:58:56. > :59:06.era, those Oxford boys. They paved the way for a lot of British

:59:07. > :59:10.successes in the future. Who knows what would have happened if it was

:59:11. > :59:17.his opponent who brought the four-minute mile? He will never be

:59:18. > :59:19.forgotten. Back to the day job now for Steve because it is the women's

:59:20. > :59:33.800m. STEVE CRAM: A fitting 800m as well.

:59:34. > :59:38.To underline the talent that is currently on show. Laura Muir going

:59:39. > :59:46.for Scotland, what a year she had last year. Claire Gibson has started

:59:47. > :59:50.this year very well. Marilyn Okoro has come from the United States to

:59:51. > :00:00.represent Great Britain. Then Chanelle Price. Laura Muir will have

:00:01. > :00:05.immense support here. Heavily into her studies to become a vet, she is

:00:06. > :00:13.at Glasgow University. She's training here in Glasgow. She is

:00:14. > :00:23.doing a great job with her 800m and 1500m. Claire Gibson has had a good

:00:24. > :00:35.indoor season already. She has got a new personal best, putting her in

:00:36. > :00:37.the top ten in the world. We had hoped to Jenny Meadows was

:00:38. > :00:51.going to run for Great Britain. She is not ready yet. And then Chanelle

:00:52. > :01:06.Price of the United States. Not one of them or well-known names.

:01:07. > :01:22.Four laps of the track indoors. What an occasion for Laura Muir and what

:01:23. > :01:25.a big year for all of the Scottish athletes. She already qualified for

:01:26. > :01:31.the Commonwealth Games team, but what could she do it here? Price of

:01:32. > :01:56.the USA moves ahead of Marilyn Okoro. Paula is next to me in the

:01:57. > :02:06.commentary box. Yes, Marilyn did win here in 2007. She will be looking to

:02:07. > :02:18.kick off this year in a big way. Decent pace being set by Price.

:02:19. > :02:24.Laura Muir right there, with her 1500m strength. She has also got the

:02:25. > :02:28.support of the crowd here today. We saw Lynsey Sharp receive her medal

:02:29. > :02:33.earlier. Let's hope that can inspire both of these girls to good formance

:02:34. > :02:38.is later in the year. Price still looks strong to me. She knows there

:02:39. > :02:43.will be danger coming as they approach the bell here. Laura Muir

:02:44. > :02:59.looks composed and she has got strength. So, Price still in front.

:03:00. > :03:04.Price tries to hold her of. Nothing she can do. Laura Muir is

:03:05. > :03:09.discovering new found confidence, back to the ability she showed last

:03:10. > :03:13.year. Gritting her teeth. This is going to be a great year for

:03:14. > :03:26.Scotland. Laura Muir, the Glasgow student, takes the win. Fastest in

:03:27. > :03:34.the world this year. Takes her to sixth on the British all-time list.

:03:35. > :03:42.What a start to 2014, the Commonwealth year, for Laura Muir of

:03:43. > :03:46.Scotland. Marilyn pulled up at the bell. Not sure if she was injured or

:03:47. > :03:51.not really race fit. They are checking how she is. I think she is

:03:52. > :03:59.OK, hopefully. Acknowledging this great performance I Laura Muir. She

:04:00. > :04:05.will remember this day, Paula. She definitely will. She ran it with

:04:06. > :04:10.real maturity. The crowd lifted her, but as they went into this end,

:04:11. > :04:20.Price was forcing her to run wide. She did not panic. Her confidence

:04:21. > :04:25.probably gave her the energy to bring it home over that last a

:04:26. > :04:38.metres and close it out with a new Scottish record. You could see how

:04:39. > :04:44.much it meant to her at the end. Yes, pretty much obliterated Susan

:04:45. > :04:49.Scott's Scottish record. You know if you have got a big year looming like

:04:50. > :04:53.this, what an opportunity it is for so many Scottish athletes. That is

:04:54. > :05:00.to start the way she has can only augur well for her in the summer.

:05:01. > :05:13.What a victory for the Scottish crowd to cheer. Laura Muir, that was

:05:14. > :05:18.a world is run. -- world-class run. I wonder what her classmates will be

:05:19. > :05:26.saying when she gets back on day. I am sure they will be watching. A new

:05:27. > :05:43.national record. Steve, we will break that good news

:05:44. > :05:46.to Laura now. She is draped in the Scottish flag. A new Scottish

:05:47. > :05:52.record, sixth on the UK all-time list. You couldn't wish to start the

:05:53. > :05:59.season any better. No. I have in working really hard. I am so happy

:06:00. > :06:03.with this crowd. Many athletes say they are not sure what they will do

:06:04. > :06:10.first time-out. Did you even think that was within you? I thought so. I

:06:11. > :06:15.knew my speed was good. I knew my training was going well. And here

:06:16. > :06:20.you are with the Scottish flag around you. It could be a huge year

:06:21. > :06:26.for Scottish sport. And you want to be part of that, not just indoors,

:06:27. > :06:33.but outdoors, in the Commonwealth. Yes, I am so excited. It is great to

:06:34. > :06:41.compete with a Scottish crowd. You have given great joy today. Long may

:06:42. > :06:48.it continue. Thank you. Under the men's 3000m, a chance for

:06:49. > :06:52.this Glasgow crowd to see some of the finest exponents of

:06:53. > :07:08.long-distance running from the last 15 years.

:07:09. > :07:17.There is Bernard Lagat on the outside. Andy Vernon, a burly

:07:18. > :07:22.figure, bronze medallist at the European cross-country 's in

:07:23. > :07:28.December. What a wonderful athlete Bernard Lagat has been. And

:07:29. > :07:37.continues to be. Current world indoor champion, winner of the last

:07:38. > :07:48.two world indoors. He will be going to defend his crown in Poland in

:07:49. > :07:52.March. Andy Vernon is a great exponent of cross-country running

:07:53. > :08:02.is, but he has designs on the track as well. Vincent Rono from Kenya,

:08:03. > :08:06.really plies his trade as a pacemaker in the big European

:08:07. > :08:19.meetings, but he has the pedigree to challenge Lagat. And Mark Mitchell,

:08:20. > :08:34.bronze medallist in the UK indoors a couple of years ago. The crowd are

:08:35. > :08:40.encouraging and effort on the long jump. We are just waiting. Lagat,

:08:41. > :08:53.gathering his thoughts. 39 years old. Plenty of running left. Andy

:08:54. > :09:00.Vernon might try and take this out. Mitchell hit the front immediately,

:09:01. > :09:05.but Lagat will bide his time. Vincent Rono is so used to being a

:09:06. > :09:09.pacemaker for the quickest men in the world. Just settles behind

:09:10. > :09:15.Mitchell for the moment. It will be interesting to see how this race

:09:16. > :09:22.pans out. We have two very fast guys in Bernard Lagat and Vincent Rono.

:09:23. > :09:28.It will be interesting to see if Andy Vernon has the speed indoors to

:09:29. > :09:46.run well today. He is expected to be slow and tactical in this race. Now

:09:47. > :09:52.Rono bounces his way to the front. Another late entrant to this field.

:09:53. > :10:02.But he certainly has the quality to stretch Bernard Lagat. Andy Vernon

:10:03. > :10:07.ran well in Edinburgh recently in the great cross-country. He had his

:10:08. > :10:14.sights set on the Olympics in London and was going well and established

:10:15. > :10:18.new personal bests. And then distressed fractures, the scourge of

:10:19. > :10:27.distance runners, set him back for a while. He still has ambitions of

:10:28. > :10:32.competing well on the track. I said it would be slow and tactical, but

:10:33. > :10:37.then Rono lifted the pace a bit. Bernard Lagat then recognised that

:10:38. > :10:45.and moved up to get right on his heels. I spoke to him yesterday. He

:10:46. > :10:52.said it is cooler here than in Arizona. So, Mark Mitchell, looking

:10:53. > :11:13.rather lonely with only four here. Another chance for Shara Proctor. It

:11:14. > :11:22.is in the second round this time. She leads equally with the America,

:11:23. > :11:28.but that is massive. Very free-spirited athlete. She has been

:11:29. > :11:33.training well, and that looks in excess of 6.50, which is good

:11:34. > :11:42.jumping. Not world-class, but for this time of year, it is exceptional

:11:43. > :11:47.jumping fish are Doctor. -- exceptional jumping for Shara

:11:48. > :12:00.Proctor. She has produced something special in the second round. She

:12:01. > :12:08.goes into the lead on her own. The American, Funmi Jimoh, now. A bit

:12:09. > :12:15.untidy on the runway, but that looks in excess of what she has achieved

:12:16. > :12:25.before. She got 6.41 in the second round, the same round when Shara

:12:26. > :12:30.Proctor jumped out at 6.59. She has been very consistent, but can't

:12:31. > :12:35.quite produce the sort of distances that Shara Proctor has been

:12:36. > :12:46.producing. She came to prominence in 2008, when she reached the Olympic

:12:47. > :13:05.final. She is still in second place. Looks as though maximum points will

:13:06. > :13:09.go to Britain. Bernard Lagat is still the Kenyan

:13:10. > :13:14.record-holder, the man who now competes for the United States. Andy

:13:15. > :13:23.Vernon is keeping pace at the moment. Mark Mitchell has been

:13:24. > :13:29.dropped. It can get lonely and isolated if you don't have anyone

:13:30. > :13:33.alongside you. Mitchell is ploughing a lonely furrow at the moment. It

:13:34. > :13:44.will be difficult for him to keep his focus. But Andy Vernon is

:13:45. > :13:54.running a great race. Vincent Rono is carving out steady laps, just

:13:55. > :14:04.under eight minutes at 30 seconds per lap.

:14:05. > :14:11.I am not sure that Vincent Rono would know how to run a tactical

:14:12. > :14:35.race, he is so used to setting a steady pace.

:14:36. > :14:45.He was going well in 2012 and set new personal best. But then he had

:14:46. > :14:57.personal injuries and missed the Olympics. So he has points to prove.

:14:58. > :15:05.And of course, the world indoors are coming up. Bernard Lagat will be

:15:06. > :15:13.defending his title. He is sitting fairly comfortably at the moment. A

:15:14. > :15:16.long way back is Mark Mitchell. But Vernon has picked up a decent pace

:15:17. > :15:29.here. Quite a different feel to other two athletes.

:15:30. > :15:37.You can just see as you look at it it looks like Andy Vernon is just

:15:38. > :15:42.working that bit harder. I think he looked at the pace of the second

:15:43. > :15:55.allotment in the middle, realised he had slowed to much, and wanted to

:15:56. > :15:59.make it a faster pace. He was hanging in there and as he was

:16:00. > :16:08.passed by the slight youngster from Kenya, leaning forward, but at the

:16:09. > :16:16.moment, Andy Vernon keeps himself nestled in behind Rono. Andy Vernon

:16:17. > :16:26.hits the front once a game and Rono is out bit now. This would be a very

:16:27. > :16:35.popular home victory, but rather valves -- but Bernard Lagat has

:16:36. > :16:42.caught up. Andy Vernon still digging in but he will not get there. He is

:16:43. > :16:49.looking around for Rono. A victory for Bernard Lagat, a good victory

:16:50. > :16:55.but a good run as well for Andy Vernon. An excellent run their by

:16:56. > :17:04.Andy Vernon and I wish you could see the look on Bernard Lagat's face as

:17:05. > :17:14.he came in up to the last 50m because he was looking behind him.

:17:15. > :17:20.There he is, Bernard Lagat, with the Stars Stripes. He will be off to

:17:21. > :17:25.the world indoors in Poland. He is the man with the victory here in

:17:26. > :17:37.Poland. Andy Vernon gave it everything. Yes, he definitely gave

:17:38. > :17:43.it everything. The last 200m was 27.4. Here Vernon made his move and

:17:44. > :17:48.committed absolutely everything. His arms are just bumping that little

:17:49. > :17:52.bit harder and Bernard Lagat looks smooth here as he came past. But

:17:53. > :17:57.just coming around the bend, Andy was able to stay right on his tales,

:17:58. > :18:02.and here he is panicking. Looking for the screen. He is hoping to keep

:18:03. > :18:06.his form smooth and their Andy just needed a little bit more belief and

:18:07. > :18:12.confidence because it was a great run, close to his personal best,

:18:13. > :18:20.too. That was a lot of effort. Andy Vernon just could not quite get

:18:21. > :18:25.there. And Lagat has won very many titles in his time. A victory for

:18:26. > :18:46.the United States' team captain. A decent pace as well, Bernard

:18:47. > :18:53.Lagat, and Mark Mitchell eventually faded and did not finish.

:18:54. > :19:00.It is always great to see you here in Britain, Andrew, and you provide

:19:01. > :19:05.us with entertainment and a victory. Thank you. Great Britain has been

:19:06. > :19:08.really good to me over the years. Every time there is an invitation I

:19:09. > :19:15.get excited and training hard because I want to come and give a

:19:16. > :19:20.good show. Today it was a sell-out crowd. What a wonderful event. I am

:19:21. > :19:25.happy I got a win, of course. It was kind of hard for me at the beginning

:19:26. > :19:30.but once I got the momentum going, I kept an eye on the two guys. And

:19:31. > :19:35.this guy in particular made it tough for you. Well done on the

:19:36. > :19:42.performance today, Andy. It suggests you have wintered well. I was

:19:43. > :19:49.surprised I did as fast as I did today. It means that my strength is

:19:50. > :19:56.very high at the moment and hopefully I can improve on that and

:19:57. > :20:04.try to get below 7.40 this season. Bernard, are you targeting the world

:20:05. > :20:08.indoors in Poland? Yes, I won it last time in Turkey. It is not

:20:09. > :20:14.easy, it is getting harder. But I will give it my best like I did

:20:15. > :20:19.today, and see what happens. If I win I will be very happy but if

:20:20. > :20:26.not, I will be happy anyways. Well done today.

:20:27. > :20:35.COMMENTATOR: A really good race from Andy Vernon there. Almost surprising

:20:36. > :20:42.Mr Lagat. And what can C Grice and Chris O'Hare do against the great

:20:43. > :20:50.Kenyan James Magut, and David Torrence of the USA? C is just 20

:20:51. > :20:58.years of age. Chris, representing Scotland, is 23. Chris, based in the

:20:59. > :21:04.USA, ran so well indoors last year. He went to the World Championships.

:21:05. > :21:10.He had a bit of a hamstring problem. Not quite at his best but goodness

:21:11. > :21:19.me didn't he run well? He got to the final. David Torrence is an

:21:20. > :21:26.American. He has come here knowing he will have to run well here.

:21:27. > :21:38.Tactics will come into play. Charlie has been out in Kenya. His coach is

:21:39. > :21:46.looking forward to the beginning of his indoor campaign. And this young

:21:47. > :21:52.man, James Magut. If you watching the cross country couple of weeks

:21:53. > :21:55.ago, he would have seen this man finish fourth in the short course

:21:56. > :22:05.event. Showing he has good strength behind him. He is a Commonwealth

:22:06. > :22:12.silver medallist from Delhi four years ago.

:22:13. > :22:18.Just four in this. They really good opportunity for the likes of Chris

:22:19. > :22:23.and C to test not only their fitness at this time of year but how they

:22:24. > :22:28.cope tactically with a very good Kenyan and a pretty experienced

:22:29. > :22:34.American as well. You may think, four men in a 1500m, it is not going

:22:35. > :22:43.to be too enthralling, but it is something I love watching, to be

:22:44. > :22:49.honest. PAULA RADCLIFFE: Yes, and we hope they have been inspired by

:22:50. > :23:01.Laura Muir's performance a little earlier on as well. Has Charlie

:23:02. > :23:09.recovered from the altitude and training in Kenya? We were watching

:23:10. > :23:17.the Olympic champion training on Tuesday, and Magut is a training

:23:18. > :23:21.partner of his. He was the man who paced him, and Mo Farah, in that

:23:22. > :23:34.really fast race in Monaco last summer. He may well be watching his

:23:35. > :23:41.training partner here. Just leading this through here. Chris trying to

:23:42. > :23:45.work out where he will base himself. Will he go back to America? He is

:23:46. > :23:52.from the Borders and he has been at home for Christmas and New Year. No

:23:53. > :23:55.reason why he shouldn't look forward to the Commonwealth games with all

:23:56. > :24:03.sorts of confidence. Not to face, fairly slow, nicely placed. 62

:24:04. > :24:09.seconds or so just over the 400m, pretty steady. Not too much danger,

:24:10. > :24:18.like you said, with just four in the race, of bumping and barging and

:24:19. > :24:22.anyone going over. Chris has obviously decided the pace was not

:24:23. > :24:26.enough for him and he has decided to move ahead of second place. And

:24:27. > :24:36.Charlie has immediately followed him. So the two British athletes,

:24:37. > :24:41.one for Scotland, one representing Great Britain, controlling this in

:24:42. > :24:46.the middle, but the American is dangerous and so is Magut. Chris has

:24:47. > :24:57.not been that decisive, and coming round this time as they go through

:24:58. > :25:00.1000m in 2.37. Charlie is in the perfect position to attack but there

:25:01. > :25:05.is going to be a strike here at some point, with two laps to go. It has

:25:06. > :25:11.got to happen at some point, someone has got to make the first move. They

:25:12. > :25:21.are all fancying their chances. Torrence is very fast in the closing

:25:22. > :25:25.stages. The boys need to start thinking about making a little bit

:25:26. > :25:29.of a move here. You don't want to be the first one but you also don't

:25:30. > :25:39.want to be the one finishing having not made your move. The two British

:25:40. > :25:59.talents at the front. No response from the other two.

:26:00. > :26:06.O'Hare gets it. Well controlled by Chris O'Hare, just enough pace in

:26:07. > :26:15.the legs to hold not only Charlie Grice of but also the fast finishing

:26:16. > :26:22.Kenyan. Two Scottish wins, not only Laura Muir in the 800m but also

:26:23. > :26:33.Chris O'Hare in the 1500m. These two young men are both real talents. I

:26:34. > :26:38.enjoyed that. You can probably tell. I love to see the two of them

:26:39. > :26:46.kicking hard like this at the belt. Magut got caught completely

:26:47. > :26:52.unawares. You have to hand it to O'Hare, he won it by controlling it.

:26:53. > :26:58.Yes, by his confidence and by controlling the race. Charlie Grice

:26:59. > :27:05.behind him make the right moves but just did not have it. Magut suddenly

:27:06. > :27:15.realises he has more left than he thought but he cannot quite get

:27:16. > :27:18.there in time. O'Hare has said he is aiming to get a medal in the

:27:19. > :27:21.Commonwealth games, and this is exactly the kind of performance he

:27:22. > :27:28.needs to keep building his confidence. The way to win his

:27:29. > :27:32.medal, he needs to get the pace, and then when you get to the final, you

:27:33. > :27:44.have to have a good head on your shoulders. And he showed that there.

:27:45. > :27:49.Just seven hundredths of a second separating first and second there.

:27:50. > :27:54.What a great race that was. A win for Chris O'Hare of Scotland.

:27:55. > :28:04.A tremendous win indeed. That was a from plastic performance. Nicking it

:28:05. > :28:11.on the line. -- fantastic performance. How was it running in

:28:12. > :28:15.front of a home crowd? It is a bit daunting but you just have to do

:28:16. > :28:20.what you normally do, stay in routine. This is definitely my

:28:21. > :28:28.highest profile opening race. It was tough to come and race against

:28:29. > :28:37.Charlie and David and the Kenyan. I am glad to come away with it. Did

:28:38. > :28:43.their help inspire you? Yes. When you see all the athletes on TV, you

:28:44. > :28:51.think, how much can you really hear the crowd? But it really is an

:28:52. > :28:55.almighty roar. The audience at home just saw your finish to that race.

:28:56. > :29:00.It was close but thrilling. Can you imagine what it would be like to do

:29:01. > :29:05.that kind of thing again in the Commonwealth Stadium later in the

:29:06. > :29:10.year? Yes, Hamdan is going to be this times so many, so it is going

:29:11. > :29:24.to be cracking. I will hopefully do the same. Good luck. Thank you.

:29:25. > :29:35.COMMENTATOR: There is the result of the long jump, which we saw earlier

:29:36. > :29:39.on. A good victory by Sharon Proctor -- Shara Proctor of Great Britain, a

:29:40. > :29:47.new stadium record, ahead of the American. And Jazmin Sawyers of the

:29:48. > :29:58.Commonwealth, 6.09, season's best for her indoors. Silver medallist in

:29:59. > :30:05.the Olympic Games in 2012, Erik Kynard. He is in the lead. This was

:30:06. > :30:23.a height but Robbie Grabarz failed first time. So first-time clearances

:30:24. > :30:36.all the way for Erik Kynard. David Smith gets a new lifetime best,

:30:37. > :30:48.just. David Smith, Scottish champion a couple of years ago. But this

:30:49. > :30:52.time, he is competing with the best. Very solid performance. English and

:30:53. > :30:57.23 champion in 2011. Then the Scottish champion. Robbie Grabarz

:30:58. > :31:05.has got to get this to stay in, and he does. Takes him three attempts to

:31:06. > :31:10.get it. This height has proved to be difficult for the Olympic bronze

:31:11. > :31:22.medallist. Three attempts, after such easy clearances earlier. That

:31:23. > :31:30.was an easy clearance, too. Now we come to the distance of

:31:31. > :31:35.150m, he rarely one distance. It was suggested by the star turn in this

:31:36. > :31:50.race, Kim Collins. He said it would be nice to try something different.

:31:51. > :32:09.Ameer Webb is the current US collegiate champion over 200m,

:32:10. > :32:14.indoors and out. James Ellington, twice the UK champion over 200m

:32:15. > :32:27.outdoors. He has a friendly rivalry with Kim Collins. Collins has got

:32:28. > :32:58.the 800m pedigree. I wonder if he will be at the Commonwealth Games.

:32:59. > :33:02.Ryan Oswald goes on the inside. Collins has, in his long career, run

:33:03. > :33:30.15.15 outside of this distance. The men's 150m. Collins lifts his

:33:31. > :33:39.head and powers on . Here is alongside Ellington full up Ryan

:33:40. > :33:44.Oswald is being left. Finishing strongly, Ellington and Ameer Webb,

:33:45. > :33:51.but Collins takes the victory. The old man is still winning at 37. We

:33:52. > :33:55.hope he is in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, because he is a

:33:56. > :34:01.star and he has won here indoors in Glasgow. The Commonwealth team

:34:02. > :34:07.captain, with another victory for his team. Colin Jackson was watching

:34:08. > :34:14.that. 37 years old, Kim Collins, but still a very quick run. He is still

:34:15. > :34:19.full of running, Colin. Indeed. He drove out of the blocks very well. I

:34:20. > :34:23.was wondering how he would approach going into the bend. You reach the

:34:24. > :34:31.corner much faster than you would normally approach it, but he handled

:34:32. > :34:36.it well. Strong, electric. Then he had to pick up his knees to maintain

:34:37. > :34:39.the performance. It was a great performance, but I thought James

:34:40. > :34:44.Ellington did well to sneak second place. He was closing down on Kim

:34:45. > :34:51.Collins. James had a wonderful season last year. If he can build on

:34:52. > :34:55.that and be ready for the European Championships as well as the common

:34:56. > :35:02.or games. But this time, Kim Collins takes the victory. It is a familiar

:35:03. > :35:14.sight, his own style, arms waving all over the place, but still

:35:15. > :35:21.winning. A personal best for all of them, because they have not run this

:35:22. > :35:23.distance before. Let's see how that affects the

:35:24. > :35:43.overall match score. Kim, you are keeping your team right

:35:44. > :35:52.in the mix with the USA. Your first win in Glasgow? Yes, I had been

:35:53. > :35:57.coming second every time. But this year, I said I have to do it for my

:35:58. > :36:02.team. We have to continue the winning tradition. What are the

:36:03. > :36:07.chances of you replicating that kind of performance, come the summer in

:36:08. > :36:16.Glasgow at the Commonwealths? It is a great chance. Hopefully, we can

:36:17. > :36:20.start new communications and get back on track for the good of the

:36:21. > :36:23.sport and for all of us. But was the way you first came to prominence for

:36:24. > :36:29.us, at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. It would be great to do

:36:30. > :36:33.something again back he in Britain. Just to be back 12 years at the

:36:34. > :36:36.Commonwealth Games would be an amazing achievement adjust for me,

:36:37. > :36:50.but for the sport of track and field. You defy age. It is great to

:36:51. > :36:55.see! Thanks very much. Certainly, the high jump is being watched by a

:36:56. > :37:05.lot of spectators in the stadium, including, on the far side... A

:37:06. > :37:13.chance to watch the great American once more. He has had first-time

:37:14. > :37:26.clearances all the way. And he gets it again. He is flying at the

:37:27. > :37:31.moment. Looks as though there is a lot more to come. I bet he has got

:37:32. > :37:41.one eye on heading towards the top of the moment. Robbie Grabarz now

:37:42. > :37:50.for Great Britain. He has got to get this to stay in, and does not do it.

:37:51. > :37:58.That means that David Smith, who should jump next, will be ahead of

:37:59. > :38:02.Robbie Grabarz, the Olympic bronze medallist, so he will be delighted

:38:03. > :38:10.with that performance. That was an abortive attempt by Robbie. He is

:38:11. > :38:16.being watched by his coach underneath the hoardings. What a

:38:17. > :38:21.performance it has been by David Smith. I bet when he came here, he

:38:22. > :38:32.did not dream he would be clearing out of 2.27. He just failed it. My

:38:33. > :38:46.goodness, that was so close. 2.24 at the last attempt. But surely he will

:38:47. > :38:50.get that later on. Scotland has hosted the games twice

:38:51. > :38:55.before, both times in Edinburgh. In 1970, there were calls for Olympic

:38:56. > :38:59.champions Lynn Davies, David Hemery and Mary Peters. On the success

:39:00. > :39:04.continued in 1986 but the likes of Daley Thompson, Roger Black, Liz

:39:05. > :39:07.McColgan and many more. Scotland is its seventh in the overall

:39:08. > :39:11.standings, with 91 goals, 104 silvers and 160 bronze medals. This

:39:12. > :39:19.year, they have a target of more than 33 medals.

:39:20. > :39:22.179 days to go. We have got a flavour of what sort of partisan

:39:23. > :39:26.atmosphere it will be, with performances from Laura Muir and

:39:27. > :39:31.Chris O'Hare. Less thirsty talk about Laura, Denise. Fantastic. Like

:39:32. > :39:35.you said, the atmosphere was incredible. We have talked before

:39:36. > :39:43.about the state of middle distance running and how healthy it is, and

:39:44. > :39:48.she typifies that. Running so confidently for someone who is just

:39:49. > :39:54.20. Great for the crowd, great for her. And you could see in the

:39:55. > :39:59.interview afterwards that things had been going well in training. She

:40:00. > :40:03.guessed this might happen. It is no accident when athletes perform well.

:40:04. > :40:13.You get an indication about the training, and she has done it. And

:40:14. > :40:17.that 1500m, Colin. That is what we like to see. Indoors, you have that

:40:18. > :40:22.option to have a good competition. Look at these two British boys, the

:40:23. > :40:27.victory going to Scotland. I think that was assisted by this wonderful

:40:28. > :40:37.audience. The smile says it all. Next, the men's 600m, a rarely run

:40:38. > :40:40.race. It will be one to watch, with Andrew Osagie against Sean Jackson.

:40:41. > :40:44.Unfortunately, Jackson is a late withdrawal.

:40:45. > :40:51.I am going to predict that Andrew Osagie will become Britain's first

:40:52. > :40:58.winner on the track today. The British record, remember Dai Greene

:40:59. > :41:00.here last year, he ran 76.22. I think that will be under threat from

:41:01. > :41:25.her psyche. -- from Andrew Osagie. Andrew had a very good World

:41:26. > :41:32.Championships. Looked good going through the rounds. And of course,

:41:33. > :41:36.that Olympic final which everybody remembers, running a personal best,

:41:37. > :41:43.trailing behind David Rudisha as everybody did in 2012. But he has

:41:44. > :41:49.been training in South Africa. And he and his coach say they are

:41:50. > :42:03.looking forward to this. He was behind Dai Greene last year. A

:42:04. > :42:08.British record. And I don't think the fact that Jackson is a late

:42:09. > :42:12.withdrawal, we are told it is a hamstring pull in warm-up, I don't

:42:13. > :42:18.think that will worry Andrew. He would have attacked this from the

:42:19. > :42:20.start anyway. Guy Learmonth is another man who has qualified for

:42:21. > :42:31.Scotland to run at the Commonwealth Games next summer. And Jeremiah

:42:32. > :42:35.Mutai representing the Commonwealth. I am not sure they had a great

:42:36. > :42:40.contingent of 800m runners at the World Championships last year full

:42:41. > :42:44.of David Rudisha is progressing, not as fast as he would like. It is

:42:45. > :42:47.still a question mark as to whether he will be at the Commonwealth games

:42:48. > :43:03.in the summer, but he wants to be there. So, Osagie. Three laps of the

:43:04. > :43:08.track. 600m. 76.22, the target. Jeremiah Mutai has not been told. He

:43:09. > :43:21.is still down there in the set position, bless him. The green card

:43:22. > :43:40.has been shown to Andrew. The other two could not see. The fact that he

:43:41. > :43:44.has got two athletes to chase down means that Andrew does not want to

:43:45. > :43:48.go to quit through the first 300 metres. He needs to relax into this.

:43:49. > :44:02.He wants to be in the lead as they come round, and he will be. Maybe a

:44:03. > :44:11.bit quick, but he is attacking this. Guy Learmonth struggling for pace at

:44:12. > :44:22.the moment. Mutai will be a danger. This is when you find out whether

:44:23. > :44:31.you're winter strength is there. This is fast. Can he give us a big

:44:32. > :44:37.glass 200m? Guy Learmonth is getting closer. The Scottish crowd sensed

:44:38. > :44:44.there could be an upset here. Learmonth within striking distance.

:44:45. > :44:49.Learmonth coming on the outside. This would be a big shock. He is

:44:50. > :44:54.going to get that, despite Mutai pushing him out. What a surprise!

:44:55. > :45:02.Look at his face. He can't believe it. There go my predictions out of

:45:03. > :45:05.the window. Exactly! Andrew Osagie is not the first British winner on

:45:06. > :45:19.the track. He looks disgusted with his performance. Muthiah, when we

:45:20. > :45:23.see this head on, did his best. He was pushing him out but he was

:45:24. > :45:33.strong. Sometimes you are training so well and you come with all sorts

:45:34. > :45:38.of expectation... But he paid for it on the last lap. He did, it was just

:45:39. > :45:44.too fast. When we saw that LaShawn Jackson did not come out, --

:45:45. > :45:50.Bershawn Jackson did not come out, I said, will that be a problem, not

:45:51. > :45:55.having anyone to push him out? But in actual fact, he panicked a bit

:45:56. > :46:00.and went out too fast. He was just tying up here and you can see him

:46:01. > :46:06.starting to lean AC at the bell and he looked like he was treading

:46:07. > :46:18.water. And Learmonth was gaining confidence from that and was able to

:46:19. > :46:21.fight his way through. He has run a Scottish record and the raised David

:46:22. > :46:26.Jenkins from the record books as well. As he is just the third

:46:27. > :46:34.British man to run under 77 for 600m, a really good confidence

:46:35. > :46:39.booster for him. He did the right thing. He did not go off too hard.

:46:40. > :46:43.He kept himself in contact. He was strong on the last lap. But I think

:46:44. > :46:50.Andrew will be pretty despondent about that. Hi 27s for the last

:46:51. > :46:57.200m. That is not what he came here for.

:46:58. > :47:05.Yet another mandrake in the national flag. We had that feeling coming

:47:06. > :47:09.here today, it is a big year for Scotland. A couple of people did it

:47:10. > :47:14.already. Where you inspired by them and the crowd? Yes, and I had a good

:47:15. > :47:24.team. We just came to enjoy ourselves and to do the best we

:47:25. > :47:29.could for ourselves and our country. In the last 50m, the roar of the

:47:30. > :47:34.crowd in this arena was incredible and that is what got me through. The

:47:35. > :47:40.racket is unbelievable. Absolutely brilliant. And this is just the

:47:41. > :47:47.start for you. What do you hope to do to build on this? I am not sure

:47:48. > :47:52.about in doors. I might have a big indoor season now I have come out

:47:53. > :47:56.and run well. My training has been incredible this winter. I will see

:47:57. > :48:00.where I go from here. But obviously it is all running up to the

:48:01. > :48:02.Commonwealth Games. We all hope you get there and enjoy the experience.

:48:03. > :48:13.Thank you. COMMENTATOR: Eric Kynard has

:48:14. > :48:20.dominated this competition right from the outset. 2.33 now. He flies

:48:21. > :48:26.over. He was the only man to clear two point 27. Both Robbie Grabarz

:48:27. > :48:37.and they beat Smith failed that height. -- David Smith. 2.33, and

:48:38. > :48:44.that puts him second on this year's world rankings. He won a silver

:48:45. > :48:48.medal in the Olympics, albeit a surprise silver medal. We knew when

:48:49. > :48:54.we saw him he was a very fine athlete. There is the result. Eric

:48:55. > :48:59.Kynard did try to .36 but failed it, so 2.33 was a victory for him.

:49:00. > :49:11.-- Eric Kynard did try to .36. -- 2.36m. STUDIO: Next weekend is

:49:12. > :49:30.the start of the Six Nations. On the 17th of February, our next

:49:31. > :49:36.athletics, the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix. I have to say, did and

:49:37. > :49:42.Colin, the organisers of the Commonwealth games was here, and

:49:43. > :49:48.must be thinking, if this is an omen of things to come, happy days!

:49:49. > :49:54.So much emphasis is placed on the big names but for the Commonwealth

:49:55. > :49:59.Games it is all about the emerging stars, people using the opportunity

:50:00. > :50:02.to make a name for themselves, and I just think so far, this has been

:50:03. > :50:09.absolutely brilliant. What we want to see is that home advantage. Chris

:50:10. > :50:14.O'Hare said people talk about the crowd, in that 1500m, and he said he

:50:15. > :50:20.did not really pay much attention to it but it really did make a

:50:21. > :50:25.difference. I think it has. Once the athletes are smelling that victory,

:50:26. > :50:29.they are going for it. Come July, who knows what is going to happen?

:50:30. > :50:40.Behind as it is the women's 60m. COMMENTATOR: We are coming out to

:50:41. > :50:45.the shorter sprints. Asher Philip goes on the outside for Great

:50:46. > :50:54.Britain. But the American Barbara Pier may well be the woman to beat.

:50:55. > :51:02.Kathryn 's Christie for Scotland -- Kathryn Christie for Scotland and

:51:03. > :51:11.Aleen Bailey for the Commonwealth. Barbara Pier ran 10.85 last year but

:51:12. > :51:15.still could not get in the US relay team in Moscow, such is their

:51:16. > :51:21.strength and depth. Kathryn Christie earlier ran in eight of 150m.

:51:22. > :51:29.Scottish sprint champion two years ago. Aged just 17. Aleen Bailey from

:51:30. > :51:35.Jamaica. Olympic gold medallist and world gold medallist in the Jamaican

:51:36. > :51:41.relay team back in 2004, and then the World Championships in 2009. And

:51:42. > :51:49.Asher Philip, UK champion last year, great time in Sheffield with 7.15.

:51:50. > :51:57.She may need something close to that again, if Barbara Pier is on form.

:51:58. > :52:07.Great Britain need a good result to get closer to the top two, the

:52:08. > :52:08.United States and the Commonwealth are heading away in the team

:52:09. > :52:25.competition at the moment. Barbara Pierre, Kathryn Christie,

:52:26. > :52:39.Aleen Bailey and Asher Philip for the Great Britain.

:52:40. > :52:49.Philip has taken it well, and then Bailey perhaps coming second ahead

:52:50. > :53:03.of PF. But in the end some distance to spare for Asher Philip. -- Bailey

:53:04. > :53:13.perhaps coming second ahead of tarmac to. COLIN JACKSON: I am

:53:14. > :53:19.track-side here and I could see exactly what was happening. Asher

:53:20. > :53:24.Phillips drove hard for the first 10m. She will have seen Barbara

:53:25. > :53:28.Pierre in her peripheral vision but she did not let it faze her. Last

:53:29. > :53:33.year it was in doors when she really announced herself with that

:53:34. > :53:37.wonderful time of 7.15, which actually placed her third on the

:53:38. > :53:42.all-time list. Fantastic performance. But now in the season

:53:43. > :53:51.of 2014, she is getting into her groove nicely. She has worked hard

:53:52. > :53:58.this winter. I look forward to her perhaps attacking the personal best

:53:59. > :54:02.of 7.15. That victory was needed. It was. It has taken a while but it was

:54:03. > :54:10.the first victory on the track for the Great Britain team. For her

:54:11. > :54:16.first outing of the year, weaving her time in at 7.25. But very

:54:17. > :54:21.valuable win for Great Britain ahead of Aleen Bailey.

:54:22. > :54:35.The first time that came up was not accurate, seven point 30. But the

:54:36. > :54:41.correct time, 7.25. How pleased are you? Quite pleased. Do you want to

:54:42. > :54:47.take part in the World Championships in Poland? Yes. I will pack my

:54:48. > :54:53.suitcase for a holiday and I would like to go. We know that is only a

:54:54. > :54:58.joke because year on year you were growing in stature. You have the

:54:59. > :55:04.European Championships this year, the Commonwealth Games as well.

:55:05. > :55:09.Definitely. I am going to go for both this year. Hopefully I will be

:55:10. > :55:15.injury -free and have a fantastic year. Good luck.

:55:16. > :55:25.COMMENTATOR: Asher Philip, winner at 7.25. The tournament in Poland will

:55:26. > :55:36.be no holiday. She has now got to run the four x 400m as she is a late

:55:37. > :55:44.replacement there for Regina George. Let's see how that water -- alters

:55:45. > :55:49.things in the overall standings. Great Britain have an outside

:55:50. > :55:51.chance, if my maths are correct. Scotland with those three victories

:55:52. > :56:04.but down in fourth place. This could be one of the crucial

:56:05. > :56:11.events. JJ Jegede in the long jump, second round. He has produced his

:56:12. > :56:17.best when it matters most. It is Chris Tomlinson in the lead at the

:56:18. > :56:23.moment, 7.56. So no great distances for the time being, but victory is

:56:24. > :56:27.what is all-important. JJ Jegede, who has made very good improvements

:56:28. > :56:32.over the last couple of years, twice the English champion, and he has

:56:33. > :56:39.produced an outdoor best of 8.11 metres. There is his coach, Peter

:56:40. > :56:41.Stanley. And 7.69, a new stadium record here in Scotland, and he is

:56:42. > :56:53.in first place. Australia leads the all-time medals

:56:54. > :56:59.table with a staggering 803 gold medals. Sally Pearson is set to

:57:00. > :57:06.shine once more. The now retired Canadian diver is the most

:57:07. > :57:12.successful Commonwealth athlete of all time, with nine gold medals

:57:13. > :57:18.between 1998 and 2010. With 70 nations competing, Gambia and

:57:19. > :57:19.Norfolk Islands have the lowest places with just one bronze medal

:57:20. > :57:28.each. No great Rutherford as he has a

:57:29. > :57:36.slight niggle, which he says, though, will not stop him competing

:57:37. > :57:41.in Birmingham. He went on that amazing Saturday in 2012. Sometimes

:57:42. > :57:46.you forget the weight of the gold medal and how much it affects

:57:47. > :57:53.people. We saw how difficult the season was for him last year, to the

:57:54. > :57:59.fit -- just the fitness and the health and changing coaches. And he

:58:00. > :58:06.gambled in Moscow, Colin, he had an injury. He is fragile but it all

:58:07. > :58:15.came together. He gambled and went and it did not pay off. -- he hoped

:58:16. > :58:21.it would all come together. He said that his hamstring was giving him a

:58:22. > :58:25.little bit of grief but he was sure he would be fit to the best of his

:58:26. > :58:30.abilities in Moscow. It was a torrid time for him and you can imagine how

:58:31. > :58:33.difficult it must be if you are the Olympic champion and you cannot

:58:34. > :58:38.carry that mantle because of injury all the time. Let's be honest, it

:58:39. > :58:44.was a shock that he won that title. He went into 2012 with the

:58:45. > :58:51.possibility of winning, but a possibility is one thing and doing

:58:52. > :58:57.it is another. I just think Greg seemed to want to prove himself. But

:58:58. > :59:04.he does deserve that title. If you are defined by the decisions you

:59:05. > :59:07.will make... I am not sure if Greg has managed himself very well

:59:08. > :59:12.through it the stage after the gold medal but it is a new season, he

:59:13. > :59:17.said he will concentrate on sprinting as well, I am not sure

:59:18. > :59:21.with the fragile body, the hamstring injuries he has had, but he needs to

:59:22. > :59:37.get back into jumping and jumping well a game. Behind us are the

:59:38. > :59:40.athletes warming up for the 60m. The athlete from Scotland ran here last

:59:41. > :59:47.year without her guide because he had an injury. Imagine when your

:59:48. > :59:52.guide pulls a hamstring and he is your eyes, the person who is going

:59:53. > :59:57.to guide you through! But she went out there and competed again and

:59:58. > :00:02.that was a gallant thing to do. Paul Dickenson is watching.

:00:03. > :00:10.PAUL DICKENSON: There is Libby Clegg, the Scottish athlete, with

:00:11. > :00:18.her guide runner. The great British sprinter, -- a son of the great

:00:19. > :00:49.British sprinter. Libby Clegg, looking relaxed. 23

:00:50. > :00:55.years old, Paralympic silver medallist at 100m in 2008 and 2012.

:00:56. > :01:01.To seems to get better and better when the big Championships come

:01:02. > :01:07.around. But a servant Tracey Hinton has been to British athletics. 43

:01:08. > :01:22.years old now. She won Paralympic medals back in 1992. Then Selina

:01:23. > :01:26.Litt. Representing the Commonwealth. Came third in the English

:01:27. > :01:29.Championships a couple of years ago. Finally, Erin McBride of Liverpool

:01:30. > :01:38.Harriers, representing Great Britain.

:01:39. > :01:44.Whereas Tracey Hinton is totally blind, there is a degree of vision

:01:45. > :01:50.that Erin McBride has, but that explains the classification she

:01:51. > :01:55.has. T13, whereas Tracey Hinton is T11. The letter teacher stands for

:01:56. > :02:15.track. Libby Clegg is bang in the middle on

:02:16. > :02:19.T12. She has 5% of normal vision. One thing they have to remember is

:02:20. > :02:25.that the athletes must cross the finish line ahead of the guide

:02:26. > :02:36.runner. There is one athlete we have not mentioned, Tracey Hinton's died

:02:37. > :02:54.runner -- guide runner. She starts as favourite. The guide runners are

:02:55. > :02:59.strapped firmly to the athletes. Libby Clegg gets away well, being

:03:00. > :03:10.chased down the straight by Erin McBride. Look at Libby Clegg!

:03:11. > :03:21.Absolutely flying. If that is confirmed, it will be a massive

:03:22. > :03:33.lifetime best. And Tracey Hinton, being guided by Stefan Hughes, her

:03:34. > :03:39.guide runner. Libby Clegg just kept on going away. Erin McBride,

:03:40. > :03:47.finishing strongly in second place. And then Selina Litt, just finishing

:03:48. > :03:54.ahead of Tracey Hinton. Total precision and synchronicity as far

:03:55. > :03:59.as these two athletes are concerned. Her guide runner is a very strong

:04:00. > :04:04.and powerful runner himself. He could go faster. But they are in

:04:05. > :04:19.perfect harmony, coming down the straight. A superb run by Libby

:04:20. > :04:23.Clegg. Great time as well. Libby Clegg is the champion and if she

:04:24. > :04:27.stays in this shape, by the time we get to Rio, who knows? She could

:04:28. > :04:37.eventually finish on top of a world standard rostrum. Chris Tomlinson

:04:38. > :04:45.need something special here. 7.56 is his best jump so far, followed by a

:04:46. > :04:57.foul. That was better. That was close. JJ, as christened by his

:04:58. > :05:02.mother. I can't announce his real name, unfortunately. But she

:05:03. > :05:13.christened him JJ, and he has stayed that way ever since. That was bang

:05:14. > :05:18.on the board by Tomlinson. Still not great distances. Hopefully, they

:05:19. > :05:44.will come later this year. He takes the lead.

:05:45. > :06:13.Let's have a look at the match score. It is very close at the top.

:06:14. > :06:21.Next, perhaps the most eagerly anticipated race of the afternoon,

:06:22. > :06:38.the men's 60m. Dwain Chambers against James Dasaolu, and what a

:06:39. > :06:44.summer he had last year. Last year was a big year for me. I

:06:45. > :06:50.won my first medal sub 10am so it was a very good year. This year, I

:06:51. > :06:54.just want to keep progressing. So I am starting my season in Glasgow and

:06:55. > :06:57.I can't wait to compete. It was last year at the European indoors when

:06:58. > :07:02.you put a marker down for the season, winning a medal. Was that

:07:03. > :07:07.how it felt at the time 's indoors represents a chance for me to act is

:07:08. > :07:13.my start as a 100m runner. Last year, you reached that rarefied air

:07:14. > :07:19.for a sprinter of sub ten seconds. I done it in the trials. It was really

:07:20. > :07:25.good doing it in front of the British public and to produce it at

:07:26. > :07:35.the World Championships was even bigger. I was against world-class

:07:36. > :07:40.athletes in Moscow. Now I feel like I belong, because I have got sub

:07:41. > :07:45.ten, which is the psychological barrier of a true world-class

:07:46. > :07:48.athlete. So now I am a more confident person. It has been

:07:49. > :07:55.documented that you have a new training partner in Adam Gemili. It

:07:56. > :08:00.is good having two of the quickest guys in Britain training together

:08:01. > :08:05.and pushing each other on. Looking beyond this weekend, are you looking

:08:06. > :08:10.at medals this year as well as times? Of course. There is the

:08:11. > :08:16.Commonwealth, the Europeans, the world indoors. At every competition,

:08:17. > :08:21.I want to pick up medals. Colin, I think one of the moments of last

:08:22. > :08:26.season was the semifinals in Birmingham, the trials. It took

:08:27. > :08:30.everyone's breath away. We knew he was going to do something special,

:08:31. > :08:33.because I couple of days before, he had run very well. So we were

:08:34. > :08:39.expecting something phenomenal, but to go under ten seconds the way he

:08:40. > :08:44.did and run that impressive 9.91, it excited everybody. We are looking

:08:45. > :08:50.forward to him doing a had to get -- head to head against when Chambers.

:08:51. > :08:53.Unfortunately, he had to pull out. But that really announced him not

:08:54. > :08:58.just to the UK, but to every sprinter in the world. He pulled out

:08:59. > :09:04.of the final in Birmingham and then pulled out of the Anniversary Games.

:09:05. > :09:08.Has he got the head for it? Absolutely, we did wonder, but he

:09:09. > :09:15.did not disappoint in Moscow. He was really impressive. This year might

:09:16. > :09:19.it is about consistency. He needs to be on that circuit, racing a bit

:09:20. > :09:23.more and not feeling intimidated. He belongs. You don't run under ten

:09:24. > :09:30.seconds several times and then just back away. Get out there, show

:09:31. > :09:34.people what you have got. Hope Lee, we will see a more confident James

:09:35. > :09:39.Dasaolu this year, given what he achieved in Moscow. That will be

:09:40. > :09:46.necessary. You have to remember, Adam Gemili had a fantastic year. He

:09:47. > :09:50.ran under 20 seconds in the 200m. It is going to be all about

:09:51. > :09:54.competition. Come the European Championships, it will be Great

:09:55. > :09:58.Britain against France. We are hoping we can take the serious

:09:59. > :10:06.positions. And a word on Dwain Chambers? I never like to write

:10:07. > :10:13.athletes. But there is a new breed coming through. British sprinting is

:10:14. > :10:18.in a healthy position. Tremendous anticipation for this. Let's see how

:10:19. > :10:25.it turns out. Yes, as ever, the men's 60m is full of drama and

:10:26. > :10:26.intrigue. And most questions are positive

:10:27. > :10:50.about James Dasaolu. Chambers is still the British

:10:51. > :11:03.record-holder for this distance indoors. Dasaolu, like many of our

:11:04. > :11:11.sprinters has been in South Africa. He has the same coat as Adam

:11:12. > :11:15.Gemili. He has been working on his start in particular during the

:11:16. > :11:22.winter months. Let's see if there is any evidence of that improving here.

:11:23. > :11:31.Jeff Porter ran the 60m hurdles earlier and just dipped the British

:11:32. > :11:49.team captain to the victory. And then Stephen Dunlop.

:11:50. > :11:57.Silver medal for Dasaolu at the European indoors last year, and that

:11:58. > :12:07.was a sign of what was to come in the summer. The guys have obviously

:12:08. > :12:23.been discussing that. Let's see how they can begin 2014.

:12:24. > :12:41.Good start from Chambers. But look how quickly Dasaolu is out. Dasaolu

:12:42. > :12:52.storms away. Apologies, I had problems with my microphone. They

:12:53. > :12:57.have had a few problems with the clock, so they are hesitating. But

:12:58. > :13:01.the real difference for me was that Chambers still has that expressive

:13:02. > :13:05.ability out of the box, but his pick-up after that was really

:13:06. > :13:12.impressive. We will wait to see full confirmation of the time. It is

:13:13. > :13:19.6.50. Ignore the stadium clock. Colin, that is a new stadium

:13:20. > :13:23.record, just outside Dasaolu's personal best. A phenomenal opening

:13:24. > :13:29.performance. Dwain Chambers reacted so well out of the blocks, but James

:13:30. > :13:40.got him very quickly. Within five or six metres, he was equal with when

:13:41. > :13:51.Chambers -- Dwain Chambers. He is so relaxed. You can see that he enjoys

:13:52. > :13:58.it. Dwain reacts well, but it is not good enough. James gets that head

:13:59. > :14:02.upright. Then he can bring those knees nice and high, pump the

:14:03. > :14:08.shoulders, keep relaxed all the way. Expels a bit of air, looks at the

:14:09. > :14:12.clock. I think he will be disappointed when he saw the clock,

:14:13. > :14:18.because he would have known it was quicker than that and we do also.

:14:19. > :14:19.That is the fastest in the world this year over 60m. Of course, it is

:14:20. > :14:37.very early. The Commonwealth Select team are

:14:38. > :15:01.doing very well. You have lived in -- lead Great

:15:02. > :15:06.Britain and Northern Ireland into its second in the standings at the

:15:07. > :15:14.moment. It is a fantastic way for me to start my season. It is obviously

:15:15. > :15:19.a team event and I am happy to get the team to second place. Some

:15:20. > :15:22.confusion over the times when you crossed the line. You were probably

:15:23. > :15:32.disappointed when you saw the times, but then I told you the

:15:33. > :15:37.correct time of 6.5. Yes, it was a meet a difference. I was really

:15:38. > :15:40.happy with it. Do you feel like a different athlete this year, with

:15:41. > :15:50.what you were able to achieve last year with the sub -10 second ones?

:15:51. > :16:01.Yes. I am ready to go again after injury. This is just building on

:16:02. > :16:05.that, really. Will we see you in Poland for the World Championships?

:16:06. > :16:13.Yes, the trials in Birmingham and then Poland. Well done. Thank you.

:16:14. > :16:20.COMMENTATOR: It certainly has been a great tussle in this long jump

:16:21. > :16:28.between Tomlinson and JJ Jegede. That looks very good indeed. He's

:16:29. > :16:34.getting on towards eight metres. JJ Jegede, on 7.69 in round two, seven

:16:35. > :16:42..48 in round three, equalling his first round jump. But that is long.

:16:43. > :16:49.JJ Jegede, there, surely he has gone into the lead, big-time. A little

:16:50. > :16:54.bit of balance. Since he has gone over to Peter Stanley as his coach,

:16:55. > :17:01.he really has improved. It will not be long before he is well over eight

:17:02. > :17:04.metres. Where is it? 7.93! Another stadium record, by a big margin. He

:17:05. > :17:16.is in the lead. Now it is time for the Sainsbury's

:17:17. > :17:26.performance of the day. It is between Libby Muir, and at the end

:17:27. > :17:35.James Dasaolu. Paula, you first. I will go with Laura. She is a world

:17:36. > :17:37.lead and to read a world leader, a Scottish record and then so

:17:38. > :17:45.confidently win the race bodes really well for the server and she

:17:46. > :17:49.ran brilliantly. Denise. By heart says Laura Muir but at the same time

:17:50. > :18:01.James Dasaolu has also run a worldly, with the 6.50. It is

:18:02. > :18:11.impressive. It is not easy! Maybe James. Laura, definitely. CJ? I will

:18:12. > :18:16.be totally honest, I happen to agree with Paula. I will go for Laura

:18:17. > :18:22.Muir. It was a fantastic performance from her. She was under pressure

:18:23. > :18:31.because there was expectation around. Marilyn Okoro was in the

:18:32. > :18:35.race, and she came out and delivered under pressure. So to shatter her

:18:36. > :18:44.personal best, make it a Scottish record on home turf is a

:18:45. > :18:49.crowd-pleaser. She looks in great shape for the summer. She is a lot

:18:50. > :18:54.more confident in herself. She has really put the working and is

:18:55. > :19:04.strong. And this will be her strongest event, 800m? She can run a

:19:05. > :19:10.very fast 1500m as well. She may even run both. The women's four

:19:11. > :19:29.point -- four x 400m relay race. The capacity crowd awaiting for what

:19:30. > :19:38.may be two decisive relays, a very strong Commonwealth team to come in

:19:39. > :19:45.the men's event. But it is the women's four x 400m relay race

:19:46. > :19:53.first. Some interesting characters, some big talents involved here as

:19:54. > :20:04.well and in the United States -- the United States will be hard to beat.

:20:05. > :20:16.Great Britain and Northern Ireland are on the outside.

:20:17. > :20:27.A world indoor relay silver medallist back in 2006 starts for

:20:28. > :20:32.United States. McCorory and Hastings are on the last two legs. Eilidh

:20:33. > :20:38.Child will feel she has a bit to make up for after the disappointing

:20:39. > :20:45.400m. She went out very strongly in that one and then failed towards the

:20:46. > :20:52.end, the Scottish team captain. Aleen Bailey is leading of the

:20:53. > :21:04.Commonwealth Select. Regina George, the Nigerian, had to pull out. Emily

:21:05. > :21:13.Diamond will bring them home. There is Megan for Great Britain. She did

:21:14. > :21:24.well in Moscow. There is Laura Wake and Victoria O horror -- Ohuruogu

:21:25. > :21:28.will bring them home. So United States, Scotland, come and will

:21:29. > :21:38.select, Great Britain and Northern Ireland. -- Commonwealth Select.

:21:39. > :21:39.Great Britain looking to take that little nibble into the Commonwealth

:21:40. > :21:56.in this penultimate track event. Away they go, and Monica Hart growth

:21:57. > :22:05.for the United States is already striding past Eilidh Child. Biding

:22:06. > :22:15.her time. Eilidh Child a long way back at the moment but a strong

:22:16. > :22:22.first leg. Two locks, of course. -- two laps.

:22:23. > :22:33.There is a bit of pride at stake here as well. Eilidh Child had a

:22:34. > :22:43.disappointing race last year but this is more like it. She will give

:22:44. > :22:47.Scotland the advantage. The Americans are undoubtedly the

:22:48. > :22:55.favourites. The youngster here, Mary Hendry, is 17 years of age. What a

:22:56. > :22:59.contrast that was, Eilidh Child, from the individual to the relay.

:23:00. > :23:12.She has learned well. Handing onto Diane Ramsay. A strong finish from

:23:13. > :23:20.Cassandra Tate. The second lap. She is flying at the moment. In the

:23:21. > :23:24.United States we have McCorory and Hastings to come. The two finalists

:23:25. > :23:31.from the World Championships, outdoors in Moscow. They will be

:23:32. > :23:43.hard to beat. But a good result from Kelly Massey. The third leg. The

:23:44. > :23:52.Americans, he should have been doing much better at languishing... A big

:23:53. > :23:57.gap is starting to develop here. Great Britain are taking it away,

:23:58. > :24:05.pushing on hard. Victoria Ohuruogu ran so well individually. This

:24:06. > :24:14.really stands up for Great Britain's relay prospects. The

:24:15. > :24:20.Americans are absolutely nowhere. A very surprisingly performers from

:24:21. > :24:29.the Americans. McCorory being left behind at the moment. Laura Wake is

:24:30. > :24:37.going to hand over to Victoria Ohuruogu. Zoe Clark is running for

:24:38. > :24:48.Scotland and Claire Gibson for the Commonwealth. Victoria Ohuruogu has

:24:49. > :24:51.believed at the moment. She finishes, perhaps a bit like her

:24:52. > :24:59.older sister, very strongly in the individual. She hits the final lap.

:25:00. > :25:08.She is still giving Gemma Nicholl a run. The crowd lifts the noise to

:25:09. > :25:14.try to bring Gemma Nicholl a bit closer to Victoria Ohuruogu. But it

:25:15. > :25:18.was a big lead that Ohuruogu had coming into this final leg. She will

:25:19. > :25:29.hold on. She is a strong, talented athlete. She brings Great Britain

:25:30. > :25:32.home. A very valuable victory. Commonwealth will finish fourth.

:25:33. > :25:35.That will make a big change to the overall standings, but a good

:25:36. > :25:46.victory for Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Ohuruogu bringing

:25:47. > :25:57.the team home. There are celebrations all around. Laura Wake

:25:58. > :26:01.run a very good leg, and good all the way through for Great Britain

:26:02. > :26:09.and Northern Ireland. Denise Lewis watching that looked down their, and

:26:10. > :26:17.a controlled performance from the Great Britain squad? Much though

:26:18. > :26:22.Gemma Nicholl tried for Scotland to get closer, she ran a very good leg

:26:23. > :26:27.on the final leg, unable to get their past Ohuruogu. I wonder if

:26:28. > :26:36.there might be further success for the Ohuruogu family in the future.

:26:37. > :26:42.Victoria Ohuruogu drinking and impressive victory for Great

:26:43. > :26:45.Britain. I am surprised that McCorory and Hastings for the United

:26:46. > :26:50.States on the third and fourth leg, the cream of this field, where

:26:51. > :26:57.really unable to do anything. McCorory on leg three looked very

:26:58. > :27:02.out of sorts. The victory led by the great British got. A precious

:27:03. > :27:14.victory in terms of the overall standings. There we are, 3: 33.49.

:27:15. > :27:21.They were leading coming into this event in the overall standings, so

:27:22. > :27:29.we will find out how that affects the overall standings.

:27:30. > :27:37.It is the last round now for Ron Taylor of the USA in the long jump

:27:38. > :27:48.and that looks good. He shakes his head a little bit, so... 7.794

:27:49. > :27:54.Taylor. He goes into second place. And Tomlinson responds with 7.75. So

:27:55. > :27:58.he finishes in the third. A fine victory for JJ Jegede for the

:27:59. > :28:04.Commonwealth. And Taylor in second place, 7.79. Tomlinson,

:28:05. > :28:09.unfortunately for him, finishing in third, defy -- despite it is a

:28:10. > :28:23.stadium best. As far as the match standings are

:28:24. > :28:30.concerned, it is very close indeed. The Commonwealth are certainly up

:28:31. > :28:34.there. They are over 60 points now. Great Britain and Northern Ireland

:28:35. > :28:38.are still ahead of the USA, in third place, and Scotland in fourth. But

:28:39. > :28:47.it is the Commonwealth leading the way at the moment.

:28:48. > :29:06.Lake Placid entertained the miracle on ice. Sarajevo hosted Bolero. Oslo

:29:07. > :29:10.boasts the great ski jump. Between 1956 and 1988, the Soviet Union

:29:11. > :29:14.dominated the Winter games. But perhaps the most extraordinary tale

:29:15. > :29:17.of the Winter Olympics is how we, from this small island with very

:29:18. > :29:24.little snow, brought downhill skiing to the world. To tell that story, I

:29:25. > :29:25.have come here to the Alps, where British pioneers helped to shape

:29:26. > :29:45.modern Winter sports. But And the Winter Olympics proper

:29:46. > :29:58.starts on the 7th of February with the opening ceremony.

:29:59. > :30:06.An Neil Black, former director of UK Athletics, is alongside me.

:30:07. > :30:12.It has been a great afternoon. A couple of things have caught your

:30:13. > :30:20.eye? In the last few events, the sprints were looking really good. An

:30:21. > :30:25.interesting year for UK athletics, because you have a Commonwealth

:30:26. > :30:28.Games with England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. How do you

:30:29. > :30:34.interact with everyone? We just embrace the whole concept. The whole

:30:35. > :30:41.plan is working with the home countries. We are working with the

:30:42. > :30:50.coaches and what their plans are as we progress towards 2017. In terms

:30:51. > :30:53.of the priorities for athletes, what is more important, European

:30:54. > :30:58.Championships after the Commonwealth Games, or the Commonwealth Games in

:30:59. > :31:04.the UK? It is different for different people. For some people,

:31:05. > :31:11.the Commonwealth Games are without question the best. For others, it is

:31:12. > :31:14.the European Championships. We are sticking with each individual

:31:15. > :31:19.athlete and coach, working that out and making sure they get the right

:31:20. > :31:24.focus. Thanks very much. Short, but sweet.

:31:25. > :31:27.We will talk to you lot more. Now back to the track for the men's 4 x

:31:28. > :31:37.400 metre relay. Talking about the summer, there is the mascot for the

:31:38. > :31:40.Commonwealth Games. If I had time, I would let Andrew

:31:41. > :31:44.tell you the full history of that. I have interviewed him! I bet that was

:31:45. > :32:18.a meeting of minds. Talking of Scotland and the Winter

:32:19. > :32:24.Olympics, don't forget the curling. We were having a conversation about

:32:25. > :32:35.that earlier. Lots of prospects at the Winter Olympics.

:32:36. > :32:49.I suspect we will be looking at the Commonwealth team here. Scotland

:32:50. > :33:04.have Jamie Bowie, then number one man, leading them off. Pinder will

:33:05. > :33:11.head off this eHarmony and team. -- this team from the Bahamas. They

:33:12. > :33:15.have got M3 macro, crisp brown -- Pinder and crisp round. Great

:33:16. > :33:28.Britain. The Americans have had some late

:33:29. > :33:32.changes, to say the least. We think Ronald Taylor, who has just finished

:33:33. > :33:42.second in the non-dom, will go on the second leg. -- he has just

:33:43. > :33:45.finished second in the long jump. How quickly can this team go from

:33:46. > :33:53.the Bahamas, representing the Commonwealth Select team? They have

:33:54. > :34:08.already won the match. Good, strong Great Britain squad, though.

:34:09. > :34:24.The world record is held by the USA. So, it is pretty even so far. Pinder

:34:25. > :34:37.going pretty well. Jamie Bowie trying to stay in there. Pinder is

:34:38. > :34:43.controlling this. Not really attacking it that much. Luke Lennon

:34:44. > :34:50.Ford is holding the inside line here. But we try to take advantage,

:34:51. > :35:02.but the Bahamas will lead this into the second leg. The USA are leaving

:35:03. > :35:08.them with a lot to do. The USA have a huge amount to do, but Great

:35:09. > :35:12.Britain are in front. The tall figure of Richard ahead of crisp

:35:13. > :35:29.round, who was impressive in the individual event earlier. Brown is

:35:30. > :35:39.looking easy. It will be very hard against this Commonwealth team which

:35:40. > :35:42.is very strong. Richard Buck at a cross crisp round, but Brown did not

:35:43. > :36:07.panic. Conrad Williams, chasing down.

:36:08. > :36:12.Scotland are still in contention. This may well be a great race. What

:36:13. > :36:18.a great history Britain have in the 4 x 400. Conrad Williams is not

:36:19. > :36:21.giving up the chase. Anthony Young still hanging in for Scotland, but

:36:22. > :36:27.it is the Bahamas Commonwealth team out in front, with Great Britain in

:36:28. > :36:35.second place. The United States, strangely, are a long way back. The

:36:36. > :36:50.Bahamian team are ahead of Great Britain. Lavigne is in control here,

:36:51. > :36:57.not panicking. As he got the strength? He ran well in the

:36:58. > :37:05.individual event. He is looking good down here. These two are well clear

:37:06. > :37:15.of the rest. Can Britain finish with a victory here? Levi Ms looking

:37:16. > :37:23.good. -- Levine. It is a win for the Great Britain Quartet! Solid

:37:24. > :37:30.performance. Commonwealth second, Scotland's third, USA four. That was

:37:31. > :37:34.a really well judged performance. All eyes might have been on that

:37:35. > :37:40.very strong quartet representing the Commonwealth team. Lennon Ford have

:37:41. > :37:45.a good first leg. Richard Buck was aggressive ahead of Chris Brown.

:37:46. > :37:52.Always kept them in contact. Good third leg from Conrad Williams, and

:37:53. > :37:56.Nigel Lavigne bringing the baton home, beating the Olympic

:37:57. > :38:12.champions, albeit indoors in January, but that is a big scalp.

:38:13. > :38:17.Very impressive, the way Levine sensed a sluggish start and took

:38:18. > :38:28.control and imposed himself and still had enough to kick again

:38:29. > :38:46.towards the end of the race. You could see his wild celebrations at

:38:47. > :38:52.the end. A fairly comfortable win. Then the celebrations could begin.

:38:53. > :39:21.Well, Great Britain are finishing on a high.

:39:22. > :39:28.So, Britain finishes with a victory. We are waiting for official

:39:29. > :39:30.confirmation of who has won the Sainsbury's as indoor challenge.

:39:31. > :39:35.Let's reflect now on this afternoon. Paula, it is fair to say

:39:36. > :39:41.that the Scottish team has been a revelation. Yes, they performed well

:39:42. > :39:45.today. It is a really good crowd here and they are getting behind

:39:46. > :39:48.them. The build-up is already starting. People are anticipating

:39:49. > :39:53.what will happen in the summer, and it is looking good for the Scottish

:39:54. > :40:01.team. Great wins for Laura Muir and Chris O'Hare. Denise, you perhaps

:40:02. > :40:08.feared for Scotland, but it has been the opposite. Chris O'Hare was

:40:09. > :40:16.fantastic. He showed some signs of flair last year, so building on

:40:17. > :40:21.that, he represented so well today. It is about growing teams and

:40:22. > :40:28.getting the depth and breadth they will need over the next few months.

:40:29. > :40:35.One of four individual wins. There was also the 600m, and Libby Clegg.

:40:36. > :40:41.I guess the Scottish team will take confidence from this. They will

:40:42. > :40:46.smile. As you said, I thought at the beginning that they thought there

:40:47. > :40:51.was a risk of an individual team medal, but it will be an opportunity

:40:52. > :40:55.for the team to grow. When you get performances like that, you get

:40:56. > :41:01.belief. This team will believe in themselves. They felt the audience

:41:02. > :41:05.supporting them, and they will pass that on. Their friends, families and

:41:06. > :41:09.colleagues will have seen their performance today and been inspired.

:41:10. > :41:13.It will be hard to beat the Scottish team in some events at the

:41:14. > :41:17.Commonwealth Games. We can get the confirmation of the match score now.

:41:18. > :41:26.It is a victory for the Commonwealth Select.

:41:27. > :41:35.Scotland are fourth, but that does not tell the story. Colin, we talked

:41:36. > :41:41.about James Dasaolu. He ran and credibly quick time. It was a

:41:42. > :41:45.sensational time. When we looked at the clock, we thought his

:41:46. > :41:53.performance was surely better than that. He executed a perfect 60m. He

:41:54. > :41:56.is only going to get better. It is filling him with confidence, and

:41:57. > :42:02.that is what we want to see. Thanks very much to all of you. The next

:42:03. > :42:07.athletics on the BBC will be from Birmingham on the 17th of February.

:42:08. > :42:16.We hope Greg Rutherford will be coming back from injury. That is it

:42:17. > :42:19.from Glasgow for 2014. The athletics season is up and running. There is

:42:20. > :42:22.plenty more to look forward to, including of course the Commonwealth

:42:23. > :42:27.Games. Until next time, goodbye.
