:00:51. > :00:59.Hello and welcome to Gotzis, in the far west of Austria. This beautiful

:01:00. > :01:04.little town, punches above its weight when it comes to athletics as

:01:05. > :01:08.it hosts one of the most important events of the year, the Hypo-Meeting

:01:09. > :01:12.in Gotzis. All of the world's best multi-event

:01:13. > :01:21.athletes have competed here and they are here again. In the 2016 Olympic

:01:22. > :01:24.year, the unofficial World Championships has great

:01:25. > :01:29.significance. Jessica Ennis-Hill is not here, recovering from an

:01:30. > :01:33.Achilles injury but Jessica Ennis-Hill has qualified for heow.

:01:34. > :01:41.However, one athlete who has not is Katrina Johnson-Thompson. She needs

:01:42. > :01:46.6200 to book her place to Rio. All eyes will be on her.

:01:47. > :01:50.Katrina Johnson-Thompson about to get the challenge underway. Hope she

:01:51. > :01:53.is prepared, ready. It is a big month for her.

:01:54. > :01:55.Katrina Johnson-Thompson is slow out of the block. Katrina

:01:56. > :01:59.Johnson-Thompson moving through. Trying to make ground. Katrina

:02:00. > :02:08.Johnson-Thompson going through in fourth place. 13.37. A great start.

:02:09. > :02:14.189, a third attempt and a clearance! Oh, my word! Anything

:02:15. > :02:18.over 12 metres is good. 12. .47, a personal best. Away they go and

:02:19. > :02:22.Katrina Johnson-Thompson is flying now. Katrina Johnson-Thompson will

:02:23. > :02:26.take the victory in 23.09. Impressive. Katrina Johnson-Thompson

:02:27. > :02:31.making a huge move up the leaderboard.

:02:32. > :02:38.The last chance, two fouls, she has to deliver here... It's a huge jump!

:02:39. > :02:42.That is incredible! Wait a second... There is drama here because... I

:02:43. > :02:47.think there is a suggestion of a nick of the plastercine. This

:02:48. > :02:52.doesn't look good. It's confirmed, Katrina Johnson-Thompson has had

:02:53. > :02:59.three fouls. It is the end of her World Championships it is game over

:03:00. > :03:03.and the frustration is that it was potentially a gold medal winning

:03:04. > :03:10.jump. Despair. But now with Beijing a distant

:03:11. > :03:15.memory, KJT is back. Not only will he want to qualify but to go on and

:03:16. > :03:20.win the Olympic gold. Morgan Lake is here. She needs the points to

:03:21. > :03:24.qualify. How the 19-year-old deals with the seven rounds is a big test,

:03:25. > :03:28.lining up alongside some of the biggest names in the sport. So the

:03:29. > :03:35.scene is set. Let's join the action of what should be a fascinating

:03:36. > :03:40.heptathlon competition. We will join Steve Backley but first, Andrew

:03:41. > :03:44.Cotter. The conditions are cool. Right on

:03:45. > :03:48.the border of Switzerland in the far west of the country.

:03:49. > :03:59.Katrina Johnson-Thompson is in lane five for the 100m hurdles.

:04:00. > :04:03.One of the most marketable athletes in the planet, according to a recent

:04:04. > :04:08.survey. Katrina Johnson-Thompson looking for the qualifying standard.

:04:09. > :04:15.Anything above that is a bonus. So, Katrina Johnson-Thompson in lane

:04:16. > :04:18.five. Ganna Kasyanova looking strong.

:04:19. > :04:23.Katrina Johnson-Thompson moving nicely.

:04:24. > :04:32.Katrina Johnson-Thompson just on the line! A little breeze behind.

:04:33. > :04:36.It is 13.37. That will match her personal best. A good start for

:04:37. > :04:41.Katrina Johnson-Thompson. Not too sharply away.

:04:42. > :04:46.A great start. Clearing the barrier nicely. The Ukrainian is a strong

:04:47. > :04:50.hurdler but once Katrina Johnson-Thompson got going, she was

:04:51. > :04:54.pulling in the Ukrainian athlete. Crossing the line first. A good

:04:55. > :05:02.start. The confirmation of that equalling

:05:03. > :05:07.her time in Beijing last year. So the fastest hurdlers in this last

:05:08. > :05:11.heat. That includes Brianne Theisen Eaton

:05:12. > :05:16.of can template and Cindy Roleder of Germany in lane three. What sort of

:05:17. > :05:23.form is Brianne Theisen Eaton in? I suspect it is very good.

:05:24. > :05:31.Brianne Theisen Eaton cleanly away. Brianne Theisen Eaton going nicely.

:05:32. > :05:35.Also making a move is Cindy Roleder, the German. Powering over the

:05:36. > :05:42.barriers. It is Cindy Roleder ahead of Brianne Theisen Eaton.

:05:43. > :05:46.It is quick. It's quick. 12.85. Just outside the championship best. A

:05:47. > :05:51.slight breeze behind but these are quick times.

:05:52. > :05:58.Brianne Theisen Eaton was the sharpest away. A very good starter

:05:59. > :06:04.it was those three. Once Cindy Roleder got going, she led them

:06:05. > :06:09.home. A quick time indeed. Cindy Roleder 12.84. A personal best

:06:10. > :06:13.for Brianne Theisen Eaton and Laura Ikauniece-Admidina.

:06:14. > :06:22.These are the standings after the 100m hurdles. Cindy Roleder and

:06:23. > :06:25.Brianne Theisen Eaton so consistent. Katrina Johnson-Thompson down in

:06:26. > :06:29.8th. The high jump is one of Katrina

:06:30. > :06:38.Johnson-Thompson's strongest events. Expecting big points. Clearing this

:06:39. > :06:43.1.80 with ease. Tougher for Brianne Theisen Eaton struggling at 1.86.

:06:44. > :06:50.The height at which Britain's Morgan Lake went clear on a second attempt.

:06:51. > :06:55.Well, Brianne Theisen Eaton, the third attempt at 1.86.

:06:56. > :07:01.The last chance for Brianne Theisen Eaton to remain involved in this,

:07:02. > :07:05.the second event of the heptathlon. Running the curve well. But came

:07:06. > :07:13.down on that. Brianne Theisen Eaton is out. 1.83 is her best so far. She

:07:14. > :07:18.jumped 1.89 last year. Put that into context.

:07:19. > :07:23.So, a light disappointment after the quick hurdles.

:07:24. > :07:29.1.83 is her best. Katrina Johnson-Thompson, the second

:07:30. > :07:33.attempt at 1.89. Oh, yes! That's how to do it. Katrina Johnson-Thompson,

:07:34. > :07:38.that is brilliant high jumping. Probably her strongest event.

:07:39. > :07:43.She has shown it once again. A good clearance there. 1.le 9. Let's see

:07:44. > :07:55.how far she is over that. Well, somewhat... The coach, Mike Holmes

:07:56. > :08:00.will have liked that. Morgan Lake has her high herselfily

:08:01. > :08:07.strapped. The third attempt at 1le 89. Good on the apreach. Took off a

:08:08. > :08:14.long way from the bar. I think that was her downfall. Clipping the bar

:08:15. > :08:21.on the way down. The look to her dad tells it all. Katrina

:08:22. > :08:30.Johnson-Thompson, then, the second attempt at 1.92. Oh, yes! She did

:08:31. > :08:34.knock it but it stays where it is! The bar at 1.92 for Katrina

:08:35. > :08:39.Johnson-Thompson. That is her best ever in a heptathlon.

:08:40. > :08:50.The second time of asking. Again, as she did in the previous height,

:08:51. > :08:56.great high jumping. Thiam, the young Belgium. The third

:08:57. > :09:04.attempt at 1.92. Oh, no. Her strongest event. I was about to say.

:09:05. > :09:10.She did win the European U 23 championships at this event. 1.89 is

:09:11. > :09:13.her best. Right, then, Katrina

:09:14. > :09:21.Johnson-Thompson. The third attempt at 1795.

:09:22. > :09:29.-- at 1.95. That was close. Possibly the best of the three. But three

:09:30. > :09:35.fouls. The end of her high jump but a 1.92. A really good performance in

:09:36. > :09:37.the second event. Encouraging signs for Katrina

:09:38. > :09:43.Johnson-Thompson in the high jump. 1.92. Not so far down on her very

:09:44. > :09:46.best. Morgan Lake frustrating for her.

:09:47. > :09:51.Brianne Theisen Eaton losing ground. Brianne Theisen Eaton knows she

:09:52. > :09:54.slips to second behind Katrina Johnson-Thompson at her weaker

:09:55. > :10:04.event. But it is Katrina Johnson-Thompson who leads after the

:10:05. > :10:07.high jump. The third event and the new event

:10:08. > :10:13.leader is Katrina Johnson-Thompson in the shot put. The first round.

:10:14. > :10:20.That spun down the left sector. Below 13 metres. She has thrown over

:10:21. > :10:25.13 metres earlier in the month for a lifetime best. She knows that was a

:10:26. > :10:30.chance to capitalise on the lead. Worked hard to wrestle away from

:10:31. > :10:36.Brianne Theisen Eaton. Look at that, down the left-hand sector as a

:10:37. > :10:39.result of spinning out. 11.55. But a valid throw and two more attempts to

:10:40. > :10:44.come. Here is Brianne Theisen Eaton, then.

:10:45. > :10:49.Going in pursuit. That's fairly tidy. Technically

:10:50. > :10:53.stable. It looked in good balance. The shot went straight down the

:10:54. > :11:02.middle. A fairly simple technique, really. Good height on that.

:11:03. > :11:10.Quite impressive. 13.71, that is a good start for her.

:11:11. > :11:17.Katrina Johnson-Thompson, then. That's her third attempt. That will

:11:18. > :11:27.be no improvement. It was a foul in the second round. A disappointing

:11:28. > :11:36.shot put, 10.616789 And now the 24-year-old Latvian,

:11:37. > :11:48.Adimida. Fairly solid.

:11:49. > :11:52.She is having a good first day. The world bronze medallist last summer.

:11:53. > :11:59.Someone to watch out for. It is exactly 13 metres. Her best in the

:12:00. > :12:04.shot put. Thiam, a massive row in the second

:12:05. > :12:11.round, her third attempt. A good attempt.

:12:12. > :12:18.The young Belgium using her levers really well. 14.95. No improvement

:12:19. > :12:26.but a good shot put. So after the shot put a great leap

:12:27. > :12:29.up the board by Thiam. Brianne Theisen Eaton second and Yorgelis

:12:30. > :12:30.Rodriguez in third place. Katrina Johnson-Thompson drops down to sixth

:12:31. > :12:36.place. Katarina Johnson-Thompson will be

:12:37. > :12:59.looking to make up ground here. Away cleanly. Near enough perfect

:13:00. > :13:06.conditions for sprinting. Katarina Johnson-Thompson working hard,

:13:07. > :13:10.working hard is Cindy Roleder and Brianne Theisen-Eaton trying to live

:13:11. > :13:13.with a quicker sprinters, but Katarina Johnson-Thompson coming

:13:14. > :13:19.away now, coming away and opening up the gap and a quick time. Surely, a

:13:20. > :13:24.personal best for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. It was a good

:13:25. > :13:28.start by all four of the leading contenders here, but once they hit

:13:29. > :13:34.the bend, Katarina Johnson-Thompson started to look like the sprinter,

:13:35. > :13:38.the others perhaps heptathletes who sprint. Katarina Johnson-Thompson so

:13:39. > :13:43.elegant and smooth around the surve. Cindy Roleder was a good mark for

:13:44. > :13:46.her in the first 80 meet, but Katarina Johnson-Thompson started to

:13:47. > :13:51.show the class and that's the gap between a world-class 200 metre

:13:52. > :13:56.runner and heptathletes who are good over the distance, but what a time

:13:57. > :14:00.for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Rounded down to 22.79. A new

:14:01. > :14:04.personal best. Needed a good result in the 200 metres. Lying in sixth

:14:05. > :14:13.place coming into itment and will move up a good deal. She might be

:14:14. > :14:17.second. To Brianne Theisen-Eaton after this event and delivering as

:14:18. > :14:23.she had to do in this event, we know how quick she is over 200 metres. A

:14:24. > :14:32.personal best for Brianne Theisen-Eaton in second place with

:14:33. > :14:37.Sprunger. After four of the seven events, Katarina Johnson-Thompson

:14:38. > :14:48.does move up to second place behind Brianne Theisen-Eaton.

:14:49. > :14:58.Sum rise where you are? I'm in here, I don't know how long I have been in

:14:59. > :15:02.here for. Ten minutes. Making sure my legs recover and getting my head

:15:03. > :15:05.down and get some sleep and tackle the long jump tomorrow which is a

:15:06. > :15:10.big talking point on everyone's lips. Hopefully I can overcome what

:15:11. > :15:18.happened to me last year and I hope I qualify and get on my flight on

:15:19. > :15:22.the plane to Rio. Fingers crossed. After the ice bath and the sleep,

:15:23. > :15:26.Katarina Johnson-Thompson tucked in behind Brianne Theisen-Eaton, but

:15:27. > :15:30.the long jump in her mind and many others looming so much to make up.

:15:31. > :15:32.Morgan Lake had withdrawn from the competition after a disappointing

:15:33. > :15:41.performance on day one and now determined to get the qualifying

:15:42. > :15:44.score in the coming weeks. Day two and the fifth event and Katarina

:15:45. > :15:49.Johnson-Thompson first up in the long jump.

:15:50. > :15:56.That's quick on the approach. Did she chop on that? Well, a big smile

:15:57. > :16:00.from her. That's a rueful smile, Steve. I'm not sure what that means

:16:01. > :16:05.because it didn't look that convincing. Chopped herself short

:16:06. > :16:14.there. Didn't quite see the lift we know she is capable of. A 690 plus

:16:15. > :16:22.jumper. A modest start for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Round two of the

:16:23. > :16:26.long jump. After 6.13 in the opener, she can let loose here and open up.

:16:27. > :16:32.Well, that's better. It is further anyway. It looks like she likes it.

:16:33. > :16:38.Oh that's why. She will have known. She will have felt that. That's a

:16:39. > :16:46.shame. Possibly a better jump, but a foul in the second round for

:16:47. > :16:51.Johnson-Thompson. All right then, event leader, Brianne Theisen-Eaton

:16:52. > :17:02.will have had half an eye on Johnson-Thompson so far. 6.27 so

:17:03. > :17:05.far. Oh, that's, that looks as if it is around six-and-a-half metres.

:17:06. > :17:14.That's a better jump from her. Perfect on the board. Look at that!

:17:15. > :17:18.Drives her left knee high. Lands cleanly. That's a technically

:17:19. > :17:25.proficient jump as she is in most of the events. She looks very well

:17:26. > :17:36.drilled. 6.56. A big improvement. The best so far. Well, here is the

:17:37. > :17:49.German. A world junior champion in 2008. This is her third attempt.

:17:50. > :17:54.Drives the arms hard at this. She had no height of that. Well, she

:17:55. > :18:02.likes it. 6.17 her best so far. This is the last attempt. Slaps the foot

:18:03. > :18:09.down hard into the wood of the take-off board. Difficult to tell

:18:10. > :18:14.from the angles exactly how far that is. Oh, it is an improvement for

:18:15. > :18:24.Schafer. In fact, it is a lifetime best. Last chance for

:18:25. > :18:29.Johnson-Thompson to salvage what will be a disappointment should she

:18:30. > :18:33.walk away with 6.15. A foul in the second round to remind you. Well,

:18:34. > :18:38.chopped again. It just looks disconnected to me. It looks

:18:39. > :18:44.understandable given her record in the event last year in Beijing. You

:18:45. > :18:47.can see her almost looking down. Yes, three fouls last summer and she

:18:48. > :18:50.said she was nervous coming into this event. Look at that, eyes down

:18:51. > :18:55.as you say, Andrew. That's a mistake. You can't do that at this

:18:56. > :19:01.level. That's taking a lot of distance off. It is a slight

:19:02. > :19:11.improvement though. 6.17 her best in that, the last round.

:19:12. > :19:18.There was something on the board for Katarina Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

:19:19. > :19:26.So overall Katarina Johnson-Thompson actually instead of moving forward

:19:27. > :19:36.after the long jump slips behind Carolin Schafer.

:19:37. > :19:43.Ashley Bryant was frustrated after losing his poles meaning he will

:19:44. > :19:49.have to compete on borrowed ones. He missed the qualifying standard by

:19:50. > :19:54.just 44 points. The selectors may take the circumstances into account

:19:55. > :20:02.otherwise he has to achieve the qualifying at.8100 at other meetings

:20:03. > :20:05.this summer. The penultimate event is the javelin. Katarina

:20:06. > :20:09.Johnson-Thompson the first round. Lifetime best of over 40 metres.

:20:10. > :20:15.Looks controlled on the approach here. The javelin prewithdrawn. Slow

:20:16. > :20:21.on the approach. Well, it is a valid throw. That's below 40 metres. Well,

:20:22. > :20:25.looking to maybe just get a mark in there. Let's have a look at this

:20:26. > :20:30.from front-on. Good across the left leg. Rides over, up and out of the

:20:31. > :20:37.throwing position. Oh, but look at that javelin, it is twisting in the

:20:38. > :20:45.air. Not flying through the air and 36.66 in the opening throw. Slightly

:20:46. > :20:50.disappointing for Johnson-Thompson. Brianne Theisen-Eaton then. Also

:20:51. > :21:03.starting with the javelin pre-set. Short approach. Well, it looks like

:21:04. > :21:09.a better flight. Oh, that's a big throw for Brianne Theisen-Eaton. A

:21:10. > :21:13.fist pump from the coach. That's a lifetime best and that's almost

:21:14. > :21:18.certainly ensured her of victory with just the 800 metres remaining

:21:19. > :21:28.as she did last year, she looks on course to defend her title.

:21:29. > :21:33.The Latvian. Probably the most capable of all heptathletes when it

:21:34. > :21:38.comes to the javelin. She took the bronze last year at the World

:21:39. > :21:45.Championships. Inn Beijing and that's a big effort in the first

:21:46. > :21:50.round of the javelin. She likes it. I mentioned the testing conditions,

:21:51. > :21:54.but she has got on to that. You wouldn't know this is tough throwing

:21:55. > :22:05.conditions because she has really let rip. Let's look at this. What a

:22:06. > :22:10.great flight that is. Well, 54.8 #3rks a new lifetime best

:22:11. > :22:15.in the first round. Johnson-Thompson then. Second round. Again, slow on

:22:16. > :22:19.the approach and again looked as though she lost her grip there. The

:22:20. > :22:30.javelin almost slipping out of her hand. Her opening throw 36.66. It

:22:31. > :22:36.looks similar. Well, look at this. It slips out swid-ways. The javelin

:22:37. > :22:44.is travelling side-ways through the air. 35.90. A disappointing

:22:45. > :22:51.performance from Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Not even on the

:22:52. > :22:53.first page. Slipping down the rankings now Katarina

:22:54. > :23:07.Johnson-Thompson. She is down to sixth place and still in the lead

:23:08. > :23:14.Brianne Theisen-Eaton. The line-up, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, probably

:23:15. > :23:20.won't need near her personal best. Brianne Theisen-Eaton goes here too.

:23:21. > :23:25.It would be interesting to see how Katarina Johnson-Thompson runs this.

:23:26. > :23:29.She ran the 2.45 time in the 800 in Beijing. She was really going

:23:30. > :23:35.through the motions. Anything under 2.20 would be comfortable enough to

:23:36. > :23:40.see her get the standard for Rio. She is just sitting near the back at

:23:41. > :23:49.the moment and Brianne Theisen-Eaton wearing the leader's number, the

:23:50. > :23:52.leader's name on her vest. Katarina Johnson-Thompson going through

:23:53. > :23:55.sitting through near the back and she will just make sure that she

:23:56. > :24:00.runs quickly enough to get the points. Not running dangerously. Not

:24:01. > :24:03.giving too much here. It is all about that qualifying standard.

:24:04. > :24:11.Johnson-Thompson giving nothing awe way. Just to get enough points for

:24:12. > :24:13.the qualification for Rio, a big statement from Brianne

:24:14. > :24:16.Theisen-Eaton, the Commonwealth champion runnier-up to Jessica

:24:17. > :24:19.Ennis-Hill in the World Championships in Beijing last summer

:24:20. > :24:32.and looks certain to take the title here in Gotzis. Good pace.

:24:33. > :24:37.And Katarina Johnson-Thompson is capable of much, much quicker. Just

:24:38. > :24:48.sitting in that group ten metres or so behind. Good for the Canadian,

:24:49. > :24:54.Theisen-Eaton to have the American there. Theisen-Eaton will be looking

:24:55. > :24:58.for a good time. Jessica Ennis-Hill will be watching this closely.

:24:59. > :25:01.Katarina Johnson-Thompson a long way behind at the moment, but again,

:25:02. > :25:05.anything under 2.20 will be good enough for her to get that

:25:06. > :25:17.qualifying standard of 6200 points. Here in the 800 metres, the final
