:01:03. > :01:45.Before this afternoon and against the world's best distance runners.

:01:46. > :01:51.The daffodils may be in bloom but the sun certainly is not in Cardiff

:01:52. > :01:56.and through the rest of the UK, I think, this weekend. It is blustery,

:01:57. > :02:00.windy, and just about starting to rain, lots of Cagle is being worn

:02:01. > :02:07.back there. The first race will be the elite women's half marathon. Mo

:02:08. > :02:10.Farah goes in the men's race, the masses at 2:10pm. Looking forward to

:02:11. > :02:14.that. But the women's race is where we will see one or two of the new

:02:15. > :02:20.Kenyan names, we expect them to dominate, they took the last five --

:02:21. > :02:25.the first five places the last time this was contested. All teams have a

:02:26. > :02:29.maximum of five members taking part, Australia with quite a strong team.

:02:30. > :02:37.As ever, the strength of Ethiopia and Kenya will dictate. You wonder

:02:38. > :02:41.how well Great Britain can do, led by Alyson Dixon, who will run in the

:02:42. > :02:47.London Marathon, hoping to secure her place in Rio. You can see all of

:02:48. > :02:51.the rest of the teams taking part. Big turnout in the world

:02:52. > :02:56.Championships in Cardiff, only once has there been more athletes taking

:02:57. > :03:00.part than on this occasion. Held every two years now, it used to be

:03:01. > :03:04.every year but now just every two years. I'm not sure many of them

:03:05. > :03:07.would have been thinking of coming to Cardiff at the end of March and

:03:08. > :03:12.being faced with the weather we have today! Joining me in the commentary

:03:13. > :03:16.box, Paula Radcliffe. You know Cardiff very well, we are looking

:03:17. > :03:20.forward to what we hope will be a great afternoon's racing.

:03:21. > :03:25.Absolutely, I was there yesterday running through this area, through

:03:26. > :03:29.the start area, a beautiful sunny day and the athletes would have

:03:30. > :03:33.loved to have seen that they switched with today! But it is the

:03:34. > :03:36.same conditions for all of the athletes, and, if anything,

:03:37. > :03:40.conditions that the British and European athletes are accustomed to

:03:41. > :03:45.coping with, and just about doing your best on the day. Well, the

:03:46. > :03:49.weather will not dampen the enthusiasm of the city and those who

:03:50. > :03:53.will come out and watch on the streets, expecting tens of thousands

:03:54. > :03:59.of people to watch. Around 16,000 will take part in the mass race with

:04:00. > :04:04.Mo Farah later but we will concentrate on the women, one of the

:04:05. > :04:17.favourites, were Sarah. -- Mary Wacera. Japan have a strong team,

:04:18. > :04:23.and Cynthia Limo, who has been running very quickly recently, the

:04:24. > :04:29.personal-best set early in the year, 66.0 four. Five of the world's top

:04:30. > :04:33.women in 2016 are in this race, so very much looking forward to what

:04:34. > :04:38.can happen. Alyson Dixon looking chilly, but she should not be, she

:04:39. > :04:41.is from Sunderland! She has been in good form, ran well in Berlin, got

:04:42. > :04:48.an Olympic qualifying there, not yet selected. Charlotte Purdue is in the

:04:49. > :04:54.race, two or three others. We will go through the British team shortly

:04:55. > :04:58.when we get under way and talk a bit about not only the British athletes

:04:59. > :05:01.but others who will be hoping this race can help them get towards

:05:02. > :05:11.selection for Rio. The they go, then. The elite women under way, the

:05:12. > :05:15.world half of the in Cardiff, tough conditions, a tough race, a flat and

:05:16. > :05:18.fast course, had it not been as blustery today we could have seen

:05:19. > :05:22.some quick times, but it will be interesting to see what tactics are

:05:23. > :05:26.employed by the best runners. I think we would have seen them

:05:27. > :05:30.heading out fast and hard from the beginning, but you may have to hold

:05:31. > :05:34.back a little bit, just be careful when they head around Cardiff Bay,

:05:35. > :05:38.expecting it to be blustery out there, perhaps they will get the

:05:39. > :05:43.full face of the wind. Just after half way they will turn back and

:05:44. > :05:47.head towards this area, right in front of Cardiff Castle, if you know

:05:48. > :05:53.Cardiff well, a beautiful backdrop. The city, as I said, delighted to be

:05:54. > :06:00.hosting this event, and it is a good habit, we have had so many events,

:06:01. > :06:03.in the next year or two the world Championships in London, the world

:06:04. > :06:07.indoors coming to Birmingham, perhaps the European indoors to

:06:08. > :06:08.Birmingham, so Cardiff playing its part in bringing big

:06:09. > :06:16.Birmingham, so Cardiff playing its to the UK. It is great to see.

:06:17. > :06:19.Seeing athletes compete in our country on home soil and all of the

:06:20. > :06:23.benefits it brought, including the home support and the excellent

:06:24. > :06:26.organisation, and when you watch events like this it makes you proud

:06:27. > :06:30.to be British when you see how well the event is put on, how well the

:06:31. > :06:35.athletes are welcomed. Despite the weather, they are happy to be racing

:06:36. > :06:40.in Cardiff and there was lots of support along the streets. You will

:06:41. > :06:43.race in the world Championships whatever the weather, but it begs a

:06:44. > :06:48.difference to the crowds that will come out and support, but hopefully

:06:49. > :06:53.the people of Cardiff will turn out en masse and get behind the runners.

:06:54. > :06:57.The mass runners are going later on as well, 16,000 plus running there,

:06:58. > :07:01.so lots of family and friends will be supporting them out on the street

:07:02. > :07:05.as well. And supporting Mo Farah, of course. He will probably be well

:07:06. > :07:08.as well. And supporting Mo Farah, of into his warm up now, maybe longer

:07:09. > :07:11.warm up than he might have been expecting!

:07:12. > :07:18.warm up than he might have been was saying, with the leading men off

:07:19. > :07:21.at 2:10pm. For now, we will concentrate on this, we can look at

:07:22. > :07:26.where they are going to head to, away from the castle, down through

:07:27. > :07:33.Grangetown into Penarth, down by the marina about three miles, then

:07:34. > :07:38.around Cardiff Bay, past the millennium Centre, this is where the

:07:39. > :07:43.imported part of the race is, back with the wind on their backs,

:07:44. > :07:48.heading up toward Roath Park Lake with three miles to go at the break

:07:49. > :07:55.will be attempted, then they will finish back at the Civic Centre, not

:07:56. > :08:00.far from City Hall. As I said, flat, fast, one or two twisty, turning

:08:01. > :08:03.parts, but no reason why people, if they judge this right, just don't

:08:04. > :08:07.overcook it into the difficult conditions in the early stages,

:08:08. > :08:13.people can still end up with a pretty swift time. Let's talk about

:08:14. > :08:19.the British contingent. I can see Alyson Dixon very close in the lead

:08:20. > :08:24.group there, her only race in 2016 was up in the north, where my family

:08:25. > :08:29.come from, but she is in good form and looking towards London. She is

:08:30. > :08:35.joined by Rachel Felton and Tina Moore coming Jenny Steel having

:08:36. > :08:42.pulled out earlier in the week, and Jenny Spink. There has been some

:08:43. > :08:46.controversy around the selections, Alyson Dixon picked on form but also

:08:47. > :08:51.on preparation, trying to help her get ready for the London Marathon.

:08:52. > :08:51.Susan Partridge maybe not quite afforded

:08:52. > :08:56.Susan Partridge maybe not quite probably should have

:08:57. > :08:59.Susan Partridge maybe not quite Steel pulled out in the week that

:09:00. > :09:04.Susan was not given the chance to step in and raised here,

:09:05. > :09:14.Susan was not given the chance to on that for later in the year when

:09:15. > :09:17.they get ready for the 10,000 metres on the track over the London

:09:18. > :09:19.Marathon, to try to get the qualifying spots for Rio. Alyson

:09:20. > :09:22.Dixon, Sonia Samuels ran very well particularly in Berlin in September,

:09:23. > :09:29.and actually not long before Alyson particularly in Berlin in September,

:09:30. > :09:33.Dixon ran the Great North Run, fairly swift a few weeks before she

:09:34. > :09:37.went to Berlin, said this will give her an indication of where she is

:09:38. > :09:40.at. I think she will go at this pretty hard, you would not come and

:09:41. > :09:46.run this race and decide to take it easy! It will be interesting to see

:09:47. > :09:49.how she goes. I can see and Eloise Wellings of Australia in the middle

:09:50. > :09:55.of the group there, with the blonde hair tied back. Outside of the

:09:56. > :09:59.Ethiopian and Kenya contingents, difficult to see anybody else

:10:00. > :10:03.getting in there, particularly be Kenyon is, I'm not even sure the

:10:04. > :10:08.Ethiopian team here is a strong as we have seen in recent years.

:10:09. > :10:16.Absolutely, the strength in depth comes from the canyons, evidenced by

:10:17. > :10:22.the fact that on the 2016 so -- list so far they fell eight of the first

:10:23. > :10:29.ten places, including Limo, who is racing here today, backed up by Mary

:10:30. > :10:42.Wacera, Gladys Cherono. They have fielded a very, very strong team.

:10:43. > :10:49.They are challenging now, from the middle of the pack. Three to count

:10:50. > :10:56.for your team, and it is the cumulative time that determines

:10:57. > :11:00.where the medals go. The Japanese team well to the fore. The women

:11:01. > :11:03.have always done very well but the men are tipped to do well in these

:11:04. > :11:11.championships, maybe more so than the women. Already, gaps starting to

:11:12. > :11:15.appear, suggesting the early pace is not too slow at all. To be fair, a

:11:16. > :11:22.big group there, it will be five K before we get a split which will let

:11:23. > :11:26.us know what pace they are running. This is a world Championships, so

:11:27. > :11:31.even though it is in the UK and we usually talk about Miles, etc, there

:11:32. > :11:35.are mile markers out there, we will watch out for them, but for the

:11:36. > :11:40.purposes of an international road running event, it is the calamitous

:11:41. > :11:47.split which will be the ones that we will see on screen. Out on the

:11:48. > :11:56.course there probably will be mile markers to give the athletes the

:11:57. > :12:06.feedback, but predominantly it will be the 5k splits that we are looking

:12:07. > :12:10.out for. You can see how flat the cause is, and it is the same that

:12:11. > :12:14.the wind is as strong as it is because the organisers put a lot of

:12:15. > :12:18.work into making sure this is a fast course as well as a good course that

:12:19. > :12:22.will show off Cardiff and the highlight of Cardiff as you move

:12:23. > :12:26.around it. Talking to some of the runners in and around the expert

:12:27. > :12:29.yesterday, they were saying that training around Cardiff Bay it is

:12:30. > :12:32.generally quite hard to find somewhere flat but they managed to

:12:33. > :12:36.do that predominantly throughout this race. There is an incline at

:12:37. > :12:46.around 12 miles but otherwise a pretty flat course. And that will

:12:47. > :12:51.impact on the men's race, the tactics in particular will come into

:12:52. > :12:58.play. They know, if Mo Farah leads it towards the latter stages, he

:12:59. > :13:03.will be dangerous. This morning I described his task in this race, it

:13:04. > :13:06.is like going to their backyard, the specialists at half marathons, going

:13:07. > :13:11.to their backyard, but in his backyard, if you know what I mean

:13:12. > :13:20.ayes he is on home soil, but it is not his strongest event. You think

:13:21. > :13:26.that the Kenyan women will think, we can run away from everybody. I think

:13:27. > :13:30.that is absolutely the mindset that the Kenyan runners will have here.

:13:31. > :13:36.We might see BEP appear girls being able to go with them. I was chatting

:13:37. > :13:41.to a former world record-holder over the marathon distance for women, who

:13:42. > :13:45.is now team manager for the Kenyan team here, and her pics were between

:13:46. > :13:49.Mary Wacera and Cynthia Limo, she said they are the two front runners

:13:50. > :13:54.in her team and she expects them to comfortably run away from the field,

:13:55. > :14:01.and the only affect the weather would have is on how fast they are

:14:02. > :14:07.able to run. But looking ahead to what Mo has to do, it is other

:14:08. > :14:11.athletes, the likes of Karoki, who know what they have to do, which is

:14:12. > :14:15.to break him early in the race. They cannot get within a sniff of the

:14:16. > :14:19.last mile and still allowing him to be within shooting distance because

:14:20. > :14:25.they know, time and time again, they are not able to run away from him in

:14:26. > :14:32.the closing stages. Still the early stages here, there is Alyson Dixon.

:14:33. > :14:39.Her dad, Dave, was a very good distance runner in his day for

:14:40. > :14:44.Sunderland. She is very much a fixture in the local running scene

:14:45. > :14:48.in the north-east, a very popular athlete, worked hard to get to the

:14:49. > :14:52.position she is in, with a chance of going to the Olympic Games they

:14:53. > :14:55.stay, but she knows she has to go to London, like everybody else, and

:14:56. > :14:59.produce a performance there, so looking for a confidence boosting

:15:00. > :15:05.run here. We have not seen much of the other British contingent close

:15:06. > :15:09.to the leading group, but she has gone out here with intent. She tends

:15:10. > :15:12.to run like that even in her marathons as well, she is not

:15:13. > :15:14.frightened to go out and trust herself, back herself. Does not

:15:15. > :15:27.always work out, but Absolutely not. You see that in her

:15:28. > :15:32.training. She will push on the long runs to get the pace. Sometimes it

:15:33. > :15:37.results in her getting overtired coming into events. But she looked

:15:38. > :15:43.at this event as an important stepping stone towards London it is

:15:44. > :15:50.not the primary target but a target she backed from this week and wants

:15:51. > :15:54.to use it as a hard tempo run, as a good indication before the marathons

:15:55. > :16:02.to come to get an idea of what she can do in London. How to judge it,

:16:03. > :16:09.how to pace it. I know she will use it as a practice. To see what she

:16:10. > :16:14.needs to take on. Practicing drinking the fluids, opening the

:16:15. > :16:19.gels, and eating the gels too, while moving along at race pace. That is

:16:20. > :16:32.hard to replicate in training. It is good practice for that today.

:16:33. > :16:42.We can see some of the names of the main contending teams. But Japan are

:16:43. > :16:47.also well-rep resented in that leading team there.

:16:48. > :16:55.Dessie, and many are experienced to do well here. But not so much of a

:16:56. > :16:59.form line. The Ethiopians have held a marathon a month or two back as a

:17:00. > :17:03.main selection for the race. The Kenyans are interesting. There was a

:17:04. > :17:08.bunch of more famous names that could have perhaps been in the team.

:17:09. > :17:23.But even without the big names, these are fast women running here.

:17:24. > :17:31.In the middle there is Kipkoeche. And other improving athletes.

:17:32. > :17:34.After a race that was won in Prague on the roads, they were talking

:17:35. > :17:40.about making the 10,000 track team in Rio.

:17:41. > :17:47.Some of them have not run a track race yet. There is a real mix in the

:17:48. > :17:52.half marathon with the Mo Farahs of the world and Geoffrey Kamworor, the

:17:53. > :17:54.World Cross Country championship. the world and Geoffrey Kamworor, the

:17:55. > :18:03.makes it a really intriguing the world and Geoffrey Kamworor, the

:18:04. > :18:09.There are a lot of athletes that can run and be outstanding and be top of

:18:10. > :18:12.the world-class over the half marathon distance but Dons

:18:13. > :18:19.transplant late it to the fulmar thon.

:18:20. > :18:25.Some feel more comfortable over the half marathon distance. Then

:18:26. > :18:29.dropping to do to 10,000m on the track is not so different. It is a

:18:30. > :18:36.different surface but working more along the same lines. If you look at

:18:37. > :18:40.Mo Farah, his potential over the marathon, probably isn't, going out

:18:41. > :18:45.on a limb here but no, sir at close as it would be over the half

:18:46. > :18:49.marathon. In the half marathon he is still very, very strong and tough to

:18:50. > :18:55.beat. But there are weaknesses there to go up to the marathon. That is

:18:56. > :18:56.ex-pented when he is world-class at 1500m.

:18:57. > :19:01.ex-pented when he is world-class at If you are looking forward to seeing

:19:02. > :19:05.Mo, you are now watching the women's race. If you watched the special

:19:06. > :19:08.programme before this, if you want to get in touch and give us your

:19:09. > :19:21.thoughts, do it via to get in touch and give us your

:19:22. > :19:26.approaching the 5-K point. to get in touch and give us your

:19:27. > :19:34.that the group is so big, it is not that fast. It looks decent enough.

:19:35. > :19:44.One or two are starting to drop off. They do hit the 5K and then we can

:19:45. > :19:50.see a more accurate judge of what is happening.

:19:51. > :19:53.Just by the way that the field is gradually whittling down, nobody has

:19:54. > :19:58.made a conscious surge but people are starting to drift off the back.

:19:59. > :20:03.made a conscious surge but people Incidentally, the runner about to go

:20:04. > :20:10.under the bridge in the white hat, the, Helen Taylor of the US, they

:20:11. > :20:14.have selected their team from the marathon championships five or six

:20:15. > :20:21.weeks ago. So a short turn around for them. I was chatting with Sarah

:20:22. > :20:28.Hall at the press conference, to say how easy it was to turn around. She

:20:29. > :20:34.was saying it was easier for her as she did not finish but they were

:20:35. > :20:42.happy to see the conditions out on the course today,

:20:43. > :20:44.happy to see the conditions out on race they were hot. They are happier

:20:45. > :20:46.running the longer distances in conditions like this.

:20:47. > :20:49.running the longer distances in Yes, Los Angeles was a tough trial.

:20:50. > :20:53.running the longer distances in The Americans, you go to the trials,

:20:54. > :21:06.that is it. Even in the marathon it is the top three. That is it. So,

:21:07. > :21:10.the 5K, Paula says that they are running about 520 a pace.

:21:11. > :21:13.It is not super fast but decent enough.

:21:14. > :21:18.The group here have picked up the pace in the last half a mile. From

:21:19. > :21:21.The group here have picked up the group of 235 athletes, it has now

:21:22. > :21:26.whittled down to about 12. It does look as though there is a

:21:27. > :21:31.slight incline there. It isn't significantly big but it is

:21:32. > :21:36.obviously significant in the way that they are running up it. It is

:21:37. > :21:42.big enough to cause a bit of shuffling in the second pack.

:21:43. > :21:49.Allowing this group to move away. They are 16.31 through the 5K

:21:50. > :21:53.marker. The Kenyans very much pushing in. The Ethiopians

:21:54. > :21:57.sheltering on hind. There will be more of that sheltering going on as

:21:58. > :22:00.we get into the windy sections. There on the

:22:01. > :22:04.we get into the windy sections. drinks tables set out with the flags

:22:05. > :22:10.by the countries, so that they know where table to go to in alphabet

:22:11. > :22:13.call order running down. Not so many taking advantage of that. On the

:22:14. > :22:20.tables, they are mostly bottles of water laid out. Not necessarily to

:22:21. > :22:23.take on a lot of fuel over the half marathon distance. Most of

:22:24. > :22:27.take on a lot of fuel over the half drinks bottles are for athletes who

:22:28. > :22:32.have an eye on the marathon coming up and want to practice the

:22:33. > :22:40.drinking. And in that lead group there, you

:22:41. > :22:47.can see the leading Japanese athlete, Ando. She That is a

:22:48. > :22:53.benchmark as we go through a few glitches here. There is water

:22:54. > :22:58.getting into the works! Sorry, we are not able to bring the standings

:22:59. > :23:03.at this point. But that big group, all of the Kenyan team, the

:23:04. > :23:11.Ethiopian team, three or four members of the Japanese team and

:23:12. > :23:18.Eloise Wellings. That is who she is having her eye

:23:19. > :23:27.on, some of the Kenyans and some of the Japanese team. So welliness of

:23:28. > :23:32.Australia is very much in there. And Tajeda is in that lead group as

:23:33. > :23:38.well. A very good athlete, Elloise

:23:39. > :23:42.Wellings. In good form in the championships in Beijing. Made it

:23:43. > :23:47.through to the final. She has the range. The track speed helps when

:23:48. > :24:01.you come into the half marathon. It can be a factor. You bring in good 5

:24:02. > :24:14.and 10K P Bs. That is something that Sarah Hall was mentioning.

:24:15. > :24:23.-- as Paula said, Sarah had dropped out. But now she has a chance to

:24:24. > :24:27.target events like this. Yes, and Sarah is an athlete who has

:24:28. > :24:33.recently made the step up into trying to achieve at the marathon.

:24:34. > :24:38.The half marathon is a distance she is ranked higher at and more

:24:39. > :24:47.comfortable racing over, moving from the 5,000 to 10,000m on the track.

:24:48. > :24:51.She has adopted four young Ethiopian girls in the last year or so with

:24:52. > :24:55.her husband. That has changed her preparation a little. They have been

:24:56. > :24:59.based more in one place. I don't think that the family have come over

:25:00. > :25:05.but if they are watching this, I wonder what team they are cheering

:25:06. > :25:14.for? Well, talking of team, you saw the British team in currently 10th

:25:15. > :25:19.place through the 5K. There is the Penarth area, the Pent art Marina

:25:20. > :25:28.and the landscape of Cardiff that is very much changed over the years.

:25:29. > :25:33.I'm not sure how much of the sights the athletes take in, as ever. At

:25:34. > :25:37.the tend to see the tarmac in front of them, all that they see are

:25:38. > :25:44.yellow or white lines. But some will have been out over the last few days

:25:45. > :25:50.looking at the course, trying to familiarise themselves over certain

:25:51. > :25:57.sections. If they know it is a flat course, or if there are hills they

:25:58. > :26:01.may look at that. But you may want to look at the last the latter part

:26:02. > :26:05.of the race. You might take the opportunity to

:26:06. > :26:09.jog around or walk around the course beforehand. With the half marathon,

:26:10. > :26:14.the athletes were offered a bus tour. But it was sitting cramped in

:26:15. > :26:18.the bus the day before the race for over two hours. That was one that

:26:19. > :26:21.they decided was better not to do that. They would take the

:26:22. > :26:25.opportunity since it is not on this course, too far from the hotel to

:26:26. > :26:29.make sure that they are familiar with the start portion and with the

:26:30. > :26:36.finish portion as you say of the course. A lot of them would have

:26:37. > :26:40.been going into nearby Bute Park to do the training runs to shake out

:26:41. > :26:44.before the race. They will have had the opportunity to explore the area,

:26:45. > :26:49.to ensure that they are familiar with twists and turns as they come

:26:50. > :26:54.into that. You may have seen the four mile mark

:26:55. > :26:59.being passed. About 21 minutes. Maintaining the

:27:00. > :27:02.same sort of pace. If anything a tad slower. There was a water station

:27:03. > :27:07.there. It is good to see the people out

:27:08. > :27:13.supporting them. The rain has not come out yet. It was forecast for

:27:14. > :27:16.right around 2.00pm. That is when the men's race is getting going. But

:27:17. > :27:21.some protection from the houses. When they come out into the bay,

:27:22. > :27:24.that is when they will face the worst of the windy conditions. But

:27:25. > :27:27.goodness me the water looks still there.

:27:28. > :27:33.Yes, I was looking at the trees by the side of the road as they were

:27:34. > :27:38.running along that section. That section looks sheltered. The wind

:27:39. > :27:41.does not look so bad. At the start of the race, the forecast was for

:27:42. > :27:46.the conditions to be forecasting wind.

:27:47. > :27:55.I think that the portion of this race where they will feel it the

:27:56. > :28:00.most is as they run across the Barrage to Cardiff Bay.

:28:01. > :28:03.They will try to save as much energy for that as possible, getting the

:28:04. > :28:12.head down and run into the conditions.

:28:13. > :28:16.And of course, the Barrage helps with the safe havens from the boats.

:28:17. > :28:21.If you lived there, that is where you would have your boat? I think

:28:22. > :28:27.Colin lives there. Yes, he does, our colleague, Colin

:28:28. > :28:29.Jackson. He has been part of the programme getting people involved in

:28:30. > :28:35.the event. The popularity of running right

:28:36. > :28:39.around the world and running events. It does not seem to be abating at

:28:40. > :28:53.all. I'm sure if many of you are out on a

:28:54. > :28:58.park run this morning, despite the weather you are enjoying it. It was

:28:59. > :29:03.a good day yesterday. Pity it could not have been carried through. But

:29:04. > :29:07.for a lot of athletes, your experience is one that says, look,

:29:08. > :29:12.whatever the conditions, you must come prepared. Even for the Kenyans

:29:13. > :29:16.and the Ethiopians, although we go on saying that this could be

:29:17. > :29:22.difficult, Mo is hoping that is the case. But these gays ray around the

:29:23. > :29:31.world in all sorts of conditions. One of two even racing on New Year

:29:32. > :29:35.on the roads. It was colder than. This They are not totally unfamiliar

:29:36. > :29:37.to running in conditions that are not ideal.

:29:38. > :29:42.to running in conditions that are When you are a

:29:43. > :29:47.to running in conditions that are race strong and well in any

:29:48. > :29:54.condition. It is more mental a factor.

:29:55. > :29:58.The likes of Geoffrey Kamworor and Karoki are too strong to allow that

:29:59. > :30:01.to factor for them. The change of conditions will not make a

:30:02. > :30:06.difference. Where we have seen it make a difference in terms of

:30:07. > :30:12.closing the gap between the European athletes and the Kenyan and the

:30:13. > :30:18.Ethiopians is in World Cross Country, where it has been muddy and

:30:19. > :30:24.snowy and in the junior teams where the inexperience shows in those

:30:25. > :30:27.conditions. But the athletes in the senior races will be accustomed to

:30:28. > :30:32.travelling in all types of conditions.

:30:33. > :30:35.travelling in all types of Apologises for the technology and

:30:36. > :30:44.the timing. We have seen Alyson Dixon. Not so far behind the leader.

:30:45. > :30:54.Next was Charlotte Pardew, and then 30 seconds behind her was Spink and

:30:55. > :30:59.Rachel Felton. Rachel Felton. So we will try to bring you updates but we

:31:00. > :31:04.are having a few problems with receiving the times and the

:31:05. > :31:12.positions of the athletes further down the field. We will do our best.

:31:13. > :31:17.apologies for that, we are control of that element of the

:31:18. > :31:22.broadcast here, so the pictures of the front of the race, we can see

:31:23. > :31:25.what is happening further down, we tend to rely on getting the

:31:26. > :31:33.information, all of the athletes where chips, the Peruvian athlete

:31:34. > :31:38.now finding herself about 50 metres back from the group, so, yes, we

:31:39. > :31:38.normally get the split times, but we will do our best to bring them

:31:39. > :31:44.through to you as and when we will do our best to bring them

:31:45. > :31:52.them. That was the five mile marker that they just run through, so that

:31:53. > :31:59.last mile has picked up. She went through in 36.25, they will

:32:00. > :32:01.last mile has picked up. She went increase as they go through the

:32:02. > :32:05.sheltered area across the barrage. You can see that by how much the

:32:06. > :32:13.field is starting to string out, the gap growing behind. Down now to just

:32:14. > :32:16.field is starting to string out, the Kenyan and Ethiopians at the front,

:32:17. > :32:18.the Japanese girls have been the victim of the increase

:32:19. > :32:24.the Japanese girls have been the and are just dropping back down the

:32:25. > :32:27.road behind as this comes down to 18 battle now between Kenny and

:32:28. > :32:41.Ethiopia for the victory in the team race. -- down to 18 battle between

:32:42. > :32:51.Kenny and Ethiopia. Mary Wacera looks comfortable. She is wearing a

:32:52. > :32:57.different name on her vest. The Ethiopians looked like they are

:32:58. > :33:01.starting to work hard. When there are only three Ethiopians left, as

:33:02. > :33:13.they are at the moment, it becomes a bit more difficult for them to try

:33:14. > :33:19.to control things, although Yalew is making a move on the outside.

:33:20. > :33:24.Let's have a look now back at the start. About ten minutes before the

:33:25. > :33:28.start of the mass race and the elite men's race, and, for us, as we look

:33:29. > :33:31.down on Cardiff Castle, we know it is going to be a big, big day for a

:33:32. > :33:54.familiar face, Mo Farah. Gold again! Simply sensational! How

:33:55. > :33:59.are you feeling ahead of the world half of the? I'm excited to be back

:34:00. > :34:03.in Cardiff, hopefully tomorrow will be a great race, it will be a tough

:34:04. > :34:07.race but at the same time it will be exciting because you have got all

:34:08. > :34:13.the guys who will be competing in Rio here, working as a team, so it's

:34:14. > :34:17.important to dig in deep. At some point in the race it is going to get

:34:18. > :34:21.tough, it will get hard, but if I can have that crowd and the home

:34:22. > :34:27.support it will hopefully make a difference. Last week was the world

:34:28. > :34:31.indoor athletics Championships. Why was it important for you to choose

:34:32. > :34:36.this over being there, where you could have won another world title?

:34:37. > :34:42.For me, home is home, the UK is home for me, it is where I grew up, where

:34:43. > :34:45.I spent my childhood, it is my first home, and if I had a choice anywhere

:34:46. > :34:52.else I would choose here to compete, which is why I am competing here. I

:34:53. > :34:57.enjoyed supporting the GB team last weekend, it was important to cheer

:34:58. > :35:01.for my team-mates. Looking forward to afford real, what are your plans

:35:02. > :35:06.in between now and then? I'm quite excited about Rio, it would be nice

:35:07. > :35:10.to do the double again but I will take it one step at a time, do this

:35:11. > :35:15.race, compete, take a break and then 1st of June I will compete on the

:35:16. > :35:22.track and then come back in Birmingham, 5th of June, complete

:35:23. > :35:26.their, and then I think London. The focus is on the euro, working

:35:27. > :35:29.upwards, ticking a few boxes to where you are. It is important that

:35:30. > :35:35.you have done a good block of training and you race and Europe

:35:36. > :35:42.testing yourself. -- and you are testing yourself. Geoffrey Kamworor

:35:43. > :35:46.is a great athlete, he and Karoki will be up there with me. It was a

:35:47. > :35:56.close race in Beijing, but he will push and push all the way. But it is

:35:57. > :36:00.what I need, right? His best distance, he won the world cross

:36:01. > :36:05.country, so what tactical battle do you expect in Cardiff? It will be

:36:06. > :36:10.difficult, he is the favourite, he and Karoki are the favourites, which

:36:11. > :36:13.is nice, sometimes, when you go in a race as favourite you feel you have

:36:14. > :36:17.to win, but today is a little bit of pressure off so in a way I can just

:36:18. > :36:22.go out there and see what I can come away with. But at the same time, in

:36:23. > :36:31.my heart, of course I want to win, I would not be turning up if I didn't

:36:32. > :36:35.want to win. Talking to David McDaid, and there

:36:36. > :36:44.he is, right in the middle, staying warm. Mone leading the British team,

:36:45. > :36:49.hoping today is his day. He knows it will be tough, though, and more of

:36:50. > :36:55.that coming in a few minutes, he is about six or seven minutes away from

:36:56. > :37:03.the start of his race. Meanwhile, the crowds out in force here at a

:37:04. > :37:08.round 10k, an important part of the race because things have picked up,

:37:09. > :37:17.and the Ethiopians have been trying to set the pace, mix things up a

:37:18. > :37:20.little bit. Yalew in particular, just pushing things on. They have

:37:21. > :37:24.dropped a couple of their own team-mates but putting a little bit

:37:25. > :37:28.of pressure on the Kenyan quintet who are still all that, all five

:37:29. > :37:35.Kenyan is still very much to the fore. They, I'm sure, will keep

:37:36. > :37:41.picking up the pace and the group will get whittled down one by one.

:37:42. > :37:49.As we have a great view looking down now, get ready for the start of the

:37:50. > :37:52.mens rea is. -- the men's race. Mo Farah leading the British team, we

:37:53. > :37:58.will go through the rest of the teams for you shortly. In terms of

:37:59. > :38:03.team competitions, we are expecting Japan to do pretty well, but with no

:38:04. > :38:09.rider there, when you get a fast time with one of your runners, you

:38:10. > :38:17.never know. It will be difficult to get in amongst it, I would imagine,

:38:18. > :38:21.in terms of medals, but top five, top six placing for the British team

:38:22. > :38:28.would be a good result. The United States not as well represented as

:38:29. > :38:32.they could be here. Let's have a look at some of the

:38:33. > :38:39.main contenders, just to the left there I would say, perhaps the

:38:40. > :38:47.prerace favourite here, Adola. Geoffrey Kamworor, the world cross

:38:48. > :39:00.country champion, a huge talent on the roads. He knows how to win this

:39:01. > :39:05.title as well. 58.54 his personal best. The nominal athlete, he will

:39:06. > :39:14.test Mo Farah completely and utterly today. If you compare personal

:39:15. > :39:20.bests, half marathon times have to be on certified wits, that is Mo's

:39:21. > :39:25.official, though he has run faster in the Great North Run, that was his

:39:26. > :39:30.official best -- certified routes. They done correctly, you heard Mo

:39:31. > :39:33.Farah talking about him, it those guys two of the best Kenyan is

:39:34. > :39:39.around, the best around on the roads. I don't think Eritrea will be

:39:40. > :39:42.able to defend their title here at all. Then the rest of the British

:39:43. > :39:53.contingent in a second. Let's get the race under way. Big crowds at

:39:54. > :40:00.the start line, they don't have far to go until the finish but the

:40:01. > :40:02.athletes have got 13.1 miles to go. Oh, a fall at the start,

:40:03. > :40:12.Geoffrey Kamworor, one of the prerace favourites who fell right at

:40:13. > :40:15.the start there, and that... I hope he is OK, horrible way for him to

:40:16. > :40:18.start the defence of his title, and he is a long way back, because of

:40:19. > :40:22.course what happens then is people are running over the top of you, you

:40:23. > :40:27.cannot get on your feet, cannot get up, and he will have to try to find

:40:28. > :40:29.his way through an awful lot of athletes, so right at the start of

:40:30. > :40:33.his way through an awful lot of this world half than Mo Farah's

:40:34. > :40:38.chances perhaps improved because the energy can Worra is going to have to

:40:39. > :40:41.expend just to get back to the front -- Kamworor is going to have to

:40:42. > :40:46.expend as to get back to the front will be detrimental to his chances

:40:47. > :40:55.here. That is Karoki there, again with a different name on his best,

:40:56. > :40:59.Muchiri. But that was terrible, Paula. Let's have a look. This is

:41:00. > :41:03.not what you want to see at the start of the race, he slipped,

:41:04. > :41:07.athletes falling on top of him, on his back, you can see some of the

:41:08. > :41:11.guys around are trying to help him get up, begins and supper began,

:41:12. > :41:14.that it took a long, long time there before he was up and running, and

:41:15. > :41:19.you have to worry, the speed he went down, the 40 went down with, has he

:41:20. > :41:24.done himself any injury damage their? -- the force with which he

:41:25. > :41:36.went down. It will make it harder for him to make up the ground back

:41:37. > :41:43.to the lead group. Ayele has realised that Kamworor is not there,

:41:44. > :41:49.so he is trying to take advantage of it. It is a shame for the race as

:41:50. > :41:54.well, around the world people were looking forward to Kamworor against

:41:55. > :42:00.his team-mate, Karoki. But also against Mo Farah, the three of them

:42:01. > :42:10.rejoining the battle we saw on the track last year, here on the roads

:42:11. > :42:13.in Cardiff. Here we have Ayele stretching the lead group already,

:42:14. > :42:22.which is not what we saw in the women's race, so that will not help

:42:23. > :42:27.him either. And, well, Mo Farah looking around, it may well be

:42:28. > :42:30.dawning on him what has happened, he certainly knows Jeffrey pretty well,

:42:31. > :42:36.he will know he is not in that group, he will wonder why, perhaps

:42:37. > :42:40.but to win two together. I saw Mo looking around about 30, 40 metres

:42:41. > :42:44.after the start, he was aware something had happened and he may

:42:45. > :42:50.well get a message from the British contingent out there. But, for the

:42:51. > :42:54.time being... There he is, Kamworor. If he has got back to the start...

:42:55. > :43:03.There he is, it was definitely him who fell, and he... He lost his hat!

:43:04. > :43:03.Of course he lost his hat! It is incredible he

:43:04. > :43:06.Of course he lost his hat! It is quickly, but I suppose that is what

:43:07. > :43:11.you have to quickly, but I suppose that is what

:43:12. > :43:14.do not have as long, of course, but you have to get back as quickly as

:43:15. > :43:20.you can within reason, but expending as little energy as you can getting

:43:21. > :43:26.back. Definitely him who falls. His first stride down, he just flipped.

:43:27. > :43:29.I think somebody caught him. Caught him from behind there. Mo looking

:43:30. > :43:36.around there. Even if you are him from behind there. Mo looking

:43:37. > :43:38.you aware health who has gone down, the first ten, 20 metres, you are

:43:39. > :43:41.looking the first ten, 20 metres, you are

:43:42. > :43:46.who should be, and he will have quickly realised can Worra was not

:43:47. > :43:50.there, but to win two together and realised he had

:43:51. > :43:53.there, but to win two together and was not there. A little bit of a

:43:54. > :43:56.boost for mode to realise that it was Kamworor that has fallen, but a

:43:57. > :44:01.bit of a blow when Kamworor gets back to the pack that quickly and

:44:02. > :44:06.settled down again in front of Mo, because he will see that that, yes,

:44:07. > :44:11.it might have been him who has fallen but it does not seem to have

:44:12. > :44:14.affected his race that much. The key when you fall like that is to make

:44:15. > :44:18.it up as gradually and smoothly as possible so that you get back into

:44:19. > :44:21.contact of quickly as you can but you don't expend too much energy

:44:22. > :44:26.because you do, undoubtedly, when you fall like that, experienced a

:44:27. > :44:28.surge in adrenaline that can make you do rash things and run to quip,

:44:29. > :44:42.which don't want to do in the first mile of a half

:44:43. > :44:45.marathon, you want to expend your energy gradually and keep a lid on

:44:46. > :44:48.the levels of lactic acid in your body there and just be able to

:44:49. > :44:50.gradually pull back. What he benefited from, Kamworor, what his

:44:51. > :44:52.team-mates consciously trying to slow down the pace, so as much as

:44:53. > :44:54.Ayele was, unusually for an Ethiopian, trying to lead

:44:55. > :44:56.Ayele was, unusually for an in the opening stages and get it

:44:57. > :45:01.moving along, the other athletes behind very much ran almost in

:45:02. > :45:04.formation across the road, trying to keep the pack and the pace steady

:45:05. > :45:18.until Kamworor was able to work What a start. We couldn't have

:45:19. > :45:22.envisaged that. Whatever happens, it will be referred to the results. If

:45:23. > :45:28.Geoffrey Kamworor were to come away with a win, it would be a phenomenal

:45:29. > :45:35.performance from the Kenyan. So Mo Farah has settled down. After a

:45:36. > :45:41.little crazy, in all respects, first kilometre.

:45:42. > :45:45.The conditions are certainly deteriorating a little bit. But not

:45:46. > :45:51.too bad. Given everything we were told. I think what Cardiff was

:45:52. > :46:00.bracing itself for, so far, it is windy it is breezy and raining but

:46:01. > :46:06.it's not quite apocalyptic. So, Ayele moving to the side. His time

:46:07. > :46:11.in front may be up. This will be addressed. I know that Mo thought

:46:12. > :46:18.that Whitehalled who happen was that Kiptoo could be asked to take it out

:46:19. > :46:30.for Geoffrey Kamworor and Karaoke. It looks as though Kiptoo, well, he

:46:31. > :46:39.is tracking Ayele stride for side but maybe Kiptoo may be the one to

:46:40. > :46:44.head up front. Mo thought that they may sacrifice someone. But look how

:46:45. > :46:47.it has gathered. It only works if the others go with

:46:48. > :46:52.him. But not much point to push the pace

:46:53. > :46:57.and keeping moving at a decent pace, if you are not going to go with

:46:58. > :47:01.that. That is what we are seeing. The other runners are reluctant to

:47:02. > :47:07.go with the quicker pace in the early stages. I was finding that

:47:08. > :47:10.funny, the Ethiopian athlete trying to get away from the lead. It

:47:11. > :47:16.funny, the Ethiopian athlete trying the Kenyan athlete, usually the

:47:17. > :47:28.roles reverse, and the Ethiopians sit on the shoulders. And to the

:47:29. > :47:32.women's race, Gudeta in front there. It has been the Ethiopians pushing

:47:33. > :47:41.the pace and trying to hurt the Kenyans a little bit.

:47:42. > :47:45.They have picked up a little bit. It is still a pace

:47:46. > :47:50.They have picked up a little bit. It feeling is comfortable for most of

:47:51. > :47:58.them here. The second 5K is quicker than the first. The pace looks like

:47:59. > :48:05.it is being kept on. Gudeta maybe wanting to keep it on.

:48:06. > :48:16.But Mary Wacera is there. Ngugi is there. And Cynthia Limo is

:48:17. > :48:22.It is the next three or four miles. This is when the fatigue starts to

:48:23. > :48:28.begin to creep in. You can't run even at this pace, although it is

:48:29. > :48:29.well within the compass of most of the athletes but this is when you

:48:30. > :48:37.will know if it is your day or no. the athletes but this is when you

:48:38. > :48:40.If you are struggling, if this is comfortable, those thoughts will be

:48:41. > :48:47.going through the head of these athletes now.

:48:48. > :48:52.Back to the men's race. We can see somebody has decided that Kiptoo

:48:53. > :48:57.will not be the only one and Bedan Karoki Muchiri has taken on the job

:48:58. > :49:00.of working with Kiptoo. Straight away, Mo reacted to that. He

:49:01. > :49:07.of working with Kiptoo. Straight almost running on his own. It is not

:49:08. > :49:14.exactly no man's land. But he has recognised the danger here and moved

:49:15. > :49:21.to could've it. -- cover it. This is swift.

:49:22. > :49:27.This is quick. It is a world half marathon championship, with a great

:49:28. > :49:33.field but look at these two. Mo Farah is slotting back into the

:49:34. > :49:41.group, as you say, Paula but it is difficult for Mo. I don't think he

:49:42. > :49:48.is expected to win the race. If it was flat out, if he were to beat

:49:49. > :50:02.those two at the half marathon, they may as well all go home. Mo is

:50:03. > :50:08.keeping his on on Geoffrey Kamworor. The question is, how much did the

:50:09. > :50:14.fall and having to catch up, how much has that affected Geoffrey

:50:15. > :50:24.Kamworor's ability to go quicker? That is the question.

:50:25. > :50:28.The form guides coming from Kenya recently were that Karoki would be

:50:29. > :50:35.the favourite coming into the event. He has been racing a bit, that is

:50:36. > :50:45.the only down side to that. He raced recently. And did a double at 6,000

:50:46. > :50:52.feet of altitude, running a 1500m in 342 and a 5,000m in 1348. So he is

:50:53. > :50:58.in very good shape and recognises he is in that form right now. His best

:50:59. > :51:02.bet to be able to walk away with this is to make it hard from the

:51:03. > :51:07.start and take the race to Mo Farah. Now you can see the effect that

:51:08. > :51:10.effort and surge is putting in and is having on the field.

:51:11. > :51:23.So, Kenya well to the fore. is having on the field.

:51:24. > :51:33.If you are watching our programme, Can Seb co- Save Athletics? That was

:51:34. > :51:39.the programme on beforehand, I know we are happy to hear your comments.

:51:40. > :51:52.A comment has been passed on: Ten year bans. Paying back all earnings,

:51:53. > :51:53.prison time for drug-slying coaches. And make cheating properly

:51:54. > :52:00.punishable. Those are the messages And make cheating properly

:52:01. > :52:05.coming. Some of the penalties within athletics must sit in the overall

:52:06. > :52:12.picture of WADA and the drug-testing regime but life bans and longer

:52:13. > :52:17.bans, they need tougher penalties available and as you have said,

:52:18. > :52:22.Paula, this is where a lot of athletes earn a lot of money on the

:52:23. > :52:25.roads. They are not the household names, not the

:52:26. > :52:33.track stars don't earn a lot of money. The big money in our sport is

:52:34. > :52:38.in road running. Half marathons. 10Ks around the world. Many are

:52:39. > :52:40.earning a lot of money. Those that are caught should be paying some of

:52:41. > :52:46.that money back. Absolutely. I think that they should

:52:47. > :52:51.be paying all of it back. That is a point we were trying to reach out to

:52:52. > :52:56.race directors. To say, we cannot maybe legally get a lifetime ban in

:52:57. > :52:58.the sport but we can make them pay back the prize money. I believe it

:52:59. > :53:01.is an honour and a privilege back the prize money. I believe it

:53:02. > :53:06.part in the sport it is not a basic right. You should not be allowed

:53:07. > :53:10.back to the party until you have full paid back the money owed to

:53:11. > :53:15.other athletes. And another tweet. This one has come

:53:16. > :53:21.in from Marco. He says he is fighting a losing battle. He is

:53:22. > :53:27.referring to Seb. He says that the sport is in denial.

:53:28. > :53:31.I don't think it is. I think that Seb has been very well aware of the

:53:32. > :53:36.issues. It is a very wide-ranging point to

:53:37. > :53:42.make that the sport is in denial. I think that huge parts of our sport

:53:43. > :53:46.really want to make big changes. Seb is well aware. The question is

:53:47. > :53:51.towards the end of that programme, is that we make the point that the

:53:52. > :53:58.sport has many different facets and not everyone agrees with the way

:53:59. > :54:01.forward. He is coming up at some point transcendence within the

:54:02. > :54:06.sport. There are opinions about how to go forward. He somehow has to

:54:07. > :54:09.pull it under one umbrella and move quickly.

:54:10. > :54:14.I agree. I don't think that the sport is in denial. The fact we are

:54:15. > :54:19.facing up to the problems, and as many people are being caught and

:54:20. > :54:26.action is taken, as in Russia and other countries in the future. If it

:54:27. > :54:30.is faced up to. If you are fighting a losing battle, as so many of us in

:54:31. > :54:36.athletics are, it is never a losing battle. A losing battle is

:54:37. > :54:40.athletics are, it is never a losing back and not making the situation

:54:41. > :54:44.better. That is not the case in athletics now.

:54:45. > :54:48.And those are the men there. In the women the pace was very much picked

:54:49. > :55:00.up. 48. 14 through 15 kilometres.

:55:01. > :55:04.The news on the Brits through... At the previous checkpoint, Alyson

:55:05. > :55:07.Dixon, the first of the British contingent going through 10K in 33.

:55:08. > :55:13.36. In terms of contingent going through 10K in 33.

:55:14. > :55:18.competition, Japan are doing well. They have had their three cop

:55:19. > :55:21.runners inside of the top 14. So up-to-date with that quickly.

:55:22. > :55:25.runners inside of the top 14. So America are not so far behind them.

:55:26. > :55:28.That maybe interesting for the battle for the Bronze Medal

:55:29. > :55:33.position. It is up and down with the men's race. They are approaching a

:55:34. > :55:37.water station. A little bit of a rise here.

:55:38. > :55:40.water station. A little bit of a Look at car OK yes. They are not

:55:41. > :55:51.hanging around here. This is hard and brutal. And look at the rain. --

:55:52. > :56:01.Karoki. A very good pace set at the men's

:56:02. > :56:05.race, 14: 10. If Geoffrey Kamworor can run 59 minutes after falling

:56:06. > :56:12.down at the start. He is a very, very good athlete. And the rest of

:56:13. > :56:17.the British contingent in the men's race, there are the likes of Ryan

:56:18. > :56:25.McLeod and Callum Hawkins with their eye on Olympic selection.

:56:26. > :56:29.And the local buy, Dewi Griffiths. Running strongly, representing the

:56:30. > :56:35.Welsh tonne ngency. I'm sure he will be getting a lot of support as he

:56:36. > :56:40.races today. And the women's group. Kenya and

:56:41. > :56:45.Ethiopia well to the fore. Alyson Dixon dropping back a little. She

:56:46. > :56:52.did go off hard. 2. 5 minutes behind the lairds.

:56:53. > :56:57.Ali will have thoughts very much on London. As we start to see this

:56:58. > :57:06.group whittle down one by one. We said it would happen as the pace has

:57:07. > :57:12.been picking up all of the time. Five athletes, the three best of the

:57:13. > :57:19.Kenyans for my money are there. Two of the best of the Ethiopians.

:57:20. > :57:24.It will not be a clean sweep. They had the sweep in Copenhagen but

:57:25. > :57:31.certainly, they will want to be. I think it will be fast. I caught a

:57:32. > :57:35.glimpse of the 10-mile marker about 51. 5 minute mark. That is a good

:57:36. > :57:42.pace. I would say that is a sub-68

:57:43. > :57:45.minutes. Maybe pushing down towards a 66-minute territory. That is

:57:46. > :57:50.moving fast. You can see it by the damage that is

:57:51. > :57:59.done further down the field, looking down the road.

:58:00. > :58:02.Behind them I can't see athletes within sight of the leaders in the

:58:03. > :58:11.race. Certainly they look comfortable. Look at how comfortable

:58:12. > :58:19.Mary Wacera is looking with Ngugi too. A definite favourite today.

:58:20. > :58:24.And the men at four miles. The pace maintained there. Look how

:58:25. > :58:30.hard Mo Farah is working. The hat is off. He is struggling to stay with

:58:31. > :58:35.the quick pace. Look at how many men are going with it. If Mo

:58:36. > :58:40.concentrates, he will pick some off. If he ends up in not the top five or

:58:41. > :58:46.six, he would be pretty disappointed. I'm not sure even Mo,

:58:47. > :58:52.he said before, he goes into a race wanting to win. Then working out a

:58:53. > :58:56.good result here. In a hard-run race, he knows that Geoffrey

:58:57. > :59:02.Kamworor is good, that Karoki is good. But there are other athletes

:59:03. > :59:08.he expects to beat. Yes. But it is early stages yet. Mo

:59:09. > :59:15.is good at judging his pace. Not being afraid to back off if he can

:59:16. > :59:17.close stronger. What he is doing is expending as little energy as

:59:18. > :59:31.possible while maintaining contact with the lead group. To sit back a

:59:32. > :59:36.little bit. Having spent time in. Kenya, there is a training session

:59:37. > :59:39.where we have seen Karoki go to the front to push the pace hard,

:59:40. > :59:44.stringing out the field and then dropping back the field. Is that him

:59:45. > :59:50.going to the front once more again? That is a very, very hard way to

:59:51. > :59:53.run, a euroing of the pace. When we spoke about Geoffrey

:59:54. > :59:56.Kamworor falling, he would not want to do a euroing pace, it saps the

:59:57. > :00:03.legs a little more. It to do a euroing pace, it saps the

:00:04. > :00:06.sting out of the finishing speed. So Mo is doing a better job

:00:07. > :00:11.sting out of the finishing speed. So his pace gradual. He will be trying

:00:12. > :00:16.not to panic about the fact that there are so many guys up ahead of

:00:17. > :00:22.him on the road. What helps is as they drop off that

:00:23. > :00:29.group, one by one, they will inevitably do, some are running too

:00:30. > :00:32.quick. Then, having people to pick off helps.

:00:33. > :00:34.The women's race looks to have slowed here.

:00:35. > :00:45.It is backing off the hard pace. That five kilometre section they

:00:46. > :00:46.went through, that is low 66 running, no wonder they

:00:47. > :00:53.went through, that is low 66 little bit, so back to the

:00:54. > :01:05.Ethiopians with Yalew, we have got Mary Wacera on the left there.

:01:06. > :01:09.Cynthia Limo, the young talent in the middle watching the Ethiopians,

:01:10. > :01:13.letting them do the work to set the pace and waiting for the moment, it

:01:14. > :01:18.has got to happen fairly soon, someone will have to break this up.

:01:19. > :01:22.I think they will all have come into this with their race plans, you saw

:01:23. > :01:32.Mary Wacera there, a glance over her shoulder, maybe checking how far

:01:33. > :01:38.back she was, but more likely just checking the distance back to the

:01:39. > :01:42.next athlete, because they will want to pick up the next point, they will

:01:43. > :01:45.not want the athletes behind to be able to get back in touch with the

:01:46. > :01:47.leading group. They are being slowed down by the lead vehicle, that is

:01:48. > :01:51.not what you want to see. The down by the lead vehicle, that is

:01:52. > :01:55.outriders and lead vehicle may be getting caught up with the crowds,

:01:56. > :01:59.the athlete almost went into the back of them there. The road now

:02:00. > :02:01.clear ahead of them, and clear in the men's race, Mo Farah at the

:02:02. > :02:16.back. He looks pretty relaxed, in his face, which is good.

:02:17. > :02:19.As you said, Paula, he has huge experience in terms of getting his

:02:20. > :02:21.pace right, you will know what he is capable of from his training,

:02:22. > :02:24.undergoing, as ever, preparing in Oregon. He was outlining in the

:02:25. > :02:31.interview, if you were with us earlier, that he knows his track

:02:32. > :02:34.plans, he will be in Birmingham at the Diamond league, and then of

:02:35. > :02:38.course he will be back in London for the Diamond league in his last big

:02:39. > :02:42.race before he heads off to reopen as well, so the preparation already

:02:43. > :02:53.there, the plan is already there, and this part of his Rio plan to get

:02:54. > :03:00.himself in the right shape. The pathos collapse -- the pace has

:03:01. > :03:06.perhaps slowed a little at the front again. They are saying, come on, we

:03:07. > :03:12.have got to keep this going, but it is what Mo was expecting. You can

:03:13. > :03:16.see Karoki taking a look around, seeing how many of the runners are

:03:17. > :03:25.there, how many have been damaged by the surge. It is speed play,

:03:26. > :03:29.injection of pace running faster, then backing off slightly before

:03:30. > :03:34.surging again. A yo-yoing of the pace which does damage but is also

:03:35. > :03:42.an effective training tool, one that they use in the dirt roads to very,

:03:43. > :03:48.very good effect. The rest of the British men through 5k, three more

:03:49. > :03:51.to the fore, Griffiths 27th, McLeod 37th, Hinds 45th. Again, we will

:03:52. > :03:57.update you as and when we get them. 37th, Hinds 45th. Again, we will

:03:58. > :04:00.In the women's race, through 15 37th, Hinds 45th. Again, we will

:04:01. > :04:10.we saw Aly Dixon, behind her Charlotte Purdue was 40th.

:04:11. > :04:16.Approaching the hour mark, approaching the part of the race

:04:17. > :04:21.where, if you want to win it, do you wait and see if you can outkicked

:04:22. > :04:26.the others? Mary Wacera might be the favourite but more often than not we

:04:27. > :04:30.go back to the old adage that a good Ethiopian always outkicked a good

:04:31. > :04:38.Kenyan. I'm not sure that is always the case. And acknowledgement of

:04:39. > :04:41.their of the click of the heels from Peres, very kindly pawning them --

:04:42. > :04:56.their of the click of the heels from pointing out that there was a car

:04:57. > :05:04.parked! They go alongside Roath Park lake. The rain seems to have abated

:05:05. > :05:08.somewhat, thank goodness. When they get to the top of the road they will

:05:09. > :05:11.turn and head back, there could be a breeze in their face over the last

:05:12. > :05:15.few kilometres, the last two miles. They turned just before the 11 mile

:05:16. > :05:19.point, actually they must have turned already judging by the clock.

:05:20. > :05:24.I'm trying to work out, I can still see the water on the left-hand side

:05:25. > :05:28.so I think they have to turn around and will be coming back down. Yes,

:05:29. > :05:33.they are heading back down. They will have turned at 11 miles and

:05:34. > :05:37.will be running back into the wind. The information from out on the

:05:38. > :05:41.course is that the worst of the wind is between five and six miles, then

:05:42. > :05:44.it is at their backs for a good stretch, which has been evidenced by

:05:45. > :05:49.the speed that the women were able to run at in that section, just a

:05:50. > :05:54.bit in their faces in the closing couple of miles. All

:05:55. > :06:00.bit in their faces in the closing pace picks up as the first real

:06:01. > :06:03.effort here, coming from the youngster who is having a great race

:06:04. > :06:06.here and have had youngster who is having a great race

:06:07. > :06:11.preparations leading into these championships.

:06:12. > :06:16.preparations leading into these that shortly. Back in the men's

:06:17. > :06:23.race, that group is getting smaller and smaller all the time.

:06:24. > :06:35.it hurts! It is a big part of a lot of athletess preparations. Look at

:06:36. > :06:37.that, the three Kenyan is forging on, putting big gaps between

:06:38. > :06:41.themselves. They will on, putting big gaps between

:06:42. > :06:45.this, they will think, this is working, this is giving us a big gap

:06:46. > :06:49.over working, this is giving us a big gap

:06:50. > :07:01.picking off those who drop off the pace, there is a group of three, he

:07:02. > :07:11.has to get onto the back of that. They are passing through six miles,

:07:12. > :07:25.not far from the ten Kate point. -- the 10k point. I am expecting them

:07:26. > :07:31.to be about 28 point 15, maybe 28.20, maintaining the pace they set

:07:32. > :07:34.through the 5k. Yes, a bit of confusion there with Karoki deciding

:07:35. > :07:40.at the last moment to get his drinks but Bob. I did see Pam Worra has got

:07:41. > :07:45.his, so maybe they will share that and he won't have to do without it

:07:46. > :07:48.-- I did see Kamworor has got his. He should have maybe realised when

:07:49. > :07:51.he saw the flags and tables lined up that he needed to think

:07:52. > :07:53.he saw the flags and tables lined up picking up his bottle. Back to the

:07:54. > :07:58.women's race, Kenyan tactics pushing the pace, it has paid off and it

:07:59. > :08:05.looks like a Kenyan one, two, three in this race. Unusually it is Mary

:08:06. > :08:07.looks like a Kenyan one, two, three Wacera who is struggling to hold on,

:08:08. > :08:11.though she still looks comfortable, but looking good in her leg

:08:12. > :08:21.turnover, legged pick-up at this stage. The look back that she will

:08:22. > :08:23.not be going to the girls in front but is checking the danger of where

:08:24. > :08:37.the competition for the bronze medal may come from.

:08:38. > :08:45.I must say, I had written in my note about the youngster in front,

:08:46. > :08:57.possible surprise winner. She ran fast, but Cynthia Limo is the

:08:58. > :09:01.fastest, and she still has her to deal with here. She does not have to

:09:02. > :09:10.worry about Mary one Sarah, she looks like she will have two keep

:09:11. > :09:14.working hard for the medal and leave her two team-mate out in front of

:09:15. > :09:25.her. Who of these two will be the quicker? 15.53, she has no track

:09:26. > :09:36.pedigree. Cynthia Limo, not much either. The two of them not really

:09:37. > :09:43.tested. But Limo has one big races, but Jepchirchir looks strong. She

:09:44. > :09:48.does, but with the contest in -- contrast in style at the runners,

:09:49. > :09:56.Jepchirchir rocking side to side and perhaps wasting a little bit of

:09:57. > :10:00.energy there. Cynthia Limo is very metronomic, very little arm

:10:01. > :10:02.movements to waste energy there. Certainly the more experienced

:10:03. > :10:06.racing over the half marathon distance but it does not always come

:10:07. > :10:10.down to experience, it comes down to who wants the victory more and who

:10:11. > :10:17.has got that little bit more energy left in the legs as we get to the

:10:18. > :10:22.closing stages. And the closing stages will determine the gold medal

:10:23. > :10:27.here, Kenyan undoubtedly looking stages will determine the gold medal

:10:28. > :10:32.a one, two, three, and heading that way as long as Mary Wacera does not

:10:33. > :10:39.completely fall apart in the closing kilometre or so. But the front two,

:10:40. > :10:44.who is going to win this? 22-year-old, rock 'n' roll style,

:10:45. > :10:49.but looks strong from the waist down, a strong stride, but on the

:10:50. > :10:57.other side Cynthia Limo, who knows she has a fast time, possibly

:10:58. > :11:01.hinting about a sprint finish, pushing one and all of a sudden two,

:11:02. > :11:06.three metre gap which looks like it might extend. Yes, that was a quick

:11:07. > :11:11.opening of that gap, it is still a gap that could close, but certainly

:11:12. > :11:14.it looked a little bit like maybe the elder team-mates made a bit of a

:11:15. > :11:19.move, she does not want to leave it to come down to a sprint finish, she

:11:20. > :11:23.may be fears the finish after Jechirchir, having said that, Paul's

:11:24. > :11:27.alongside her. They are coming across a small crest, I would not

:11:28. > :11:32.call it a big hill, but it will enable Limo to eke out a little bit

:11:33. > :11:37.of a lead, which was quickly made up there. Jechirchir decided, no, I am

:11:38. > :11:40.not going to give up, used to have a battle on your hands for the

:11:41. > :11:46.victory. Amazing how the confidence can shift from one to the other,

:11:47. > :11:51.Limo gets a few meters and thinks, I have got this, and suddenly the lead

:11:52. > :11:56.disappears and Jechirchir says, I can win this. But the two of them in

:11:57. > :12:00.the closing stages, it will come down to a sprint finish, Jechirchir,

:12:01. > :12:05.22 years old, Limo, the sixth fastest marathon runner of all time

:12:06. > :12:10.suddenly finding the sprint of the youngster, looking like it is a

:12:11. > :12:19.winning one, opening to five, six, seven... Ten metres, look at her go!

:12:20. > :12:23.Peris Jechirchir, this could be a new name, she said she wants to go

:12:24. > :12:28.to Rio, but for the time being she will be able to celebrate a

:12:29. > :12:32.brilliant win on the streets of Cardiff, Peris Jechirchir of Kenny

:12:33. > :12:37.wins the world half and, QuickTime, as well. Cynthia Limo take the

:12:38. > :12:43.silver, and it will be just about a Kenyan 123. But, goodness me, Peris

:12:44. > :12:48.Jechirchir, look how surprised she is as we see the prerace favourite,

:12:49. > :12:55.Mary one Sarah coming in for the bronze medal. -- Mary Wacera. She

:12:56. > :12:59.could not hang on for the last two kilometres, but still a pretty

:13:00. > :13:06.QuickTime, inside 68 minutes on a difficult day out there, but Kenyan

:13:07. > :13:18.dominant one more. We wondered, didn't we, the effort, Paula, Limo

:13:19. > :13:22.perhaps felt and sensed this youngster was going well, made the

:13:23. > :13:28.effort with about 800 to go, and she was closed down, but what a finish

:13:29. > :13:31.from Peris Jechirchir. Yes, I think what happened was that Limo showed

:13:32. > :13:35.her fear by making the move, try to get away, she showed she was

:13:36. > :13:40.frightened of Chris Reid, who was able to the real her back in and get

:13:41. > :13:46.past her. -- frightened off Peris Jechirchir. And also I think

:13:47. > :13:50.Jechirchir was looking at her watch to judge how far she had to go, and

:13:51. > :13:54.it was only when somebody shouted how far she had to go that she

:13:55. > :14:01.launched that finish and moved away pretty easily from Limo for the

:14:02. > :14:05.victim. -- for the victory. There is Mo Farah, the leaders I would

:14:06. > :14:10.estimate about 100 metres ahead of him at this point, maybe a tad less

:14:11. > :14:17.than that, certainly nine, ten seconds at the very least. It is not

:14:18. > :14:21.a sort of distance, depending on the athletes, that you can think, that

:14:22. > :14:28.race is over, but when it contains Kamworor and Karoki and a couple of

:14:29. > :14:32.the good Ethiopians in there as well, then you know that it is going

:14:33. > :14:34.to be a tough day for Mo, but he will be hoping that one or two of

:14:35. > :14:38.these have overcooked it a bit, not will be hoping that one or two of

:14:39. > :14:48.those two, I don't think, but when they went through 10k, 27.59, you

:14:49. > :14:54.would not be disappointed if you were running that on the track,

:14:55. > :14:59.27.59 means the second 5k was very quick indeed, inside 14 minutes. And

:15:00. > :15:04.that is fast. This is very fast running. I think if we looked down,

:15:05. > :15:09.I'm not even sure what Mo's personal best is good that on the road, he

:15:10. > :15:14.has not raced it best is good that on the road, he

:15:15. > :15:18.guess it is fairly close to it. He is keeping relaxed, definitely not

:15:19. > :15:22.out of this yet, don't underestimate Mo Farah and how well he can stay

:15:23. > :15:26.focused on what he's doing, on his race in the middle stages, and just

:15:27. > :15:32.work gradually away, moving closer and closer to this group if he can,

:15:33. > :15:38.but these are two quality athletes, Kamworor and Karoki, with Tola as

:15:39. > :15:43.well, but Kamworor and colicky have been able to work together and take

:15:44. > :15:52.on the surge is one at a time -- Kamworor and callow key. It is

:15:53. > :15:55.interesting, because all of these guys, including Mo Farah, are

:15:56. > :16:02.running quicker than anyone would have expected, Mo has gone through

:16:03. > :16:02.running quicker than anyone would 28.04 on 10k on the roads in a

:16:03. > :16:05.running quicker than anyone would marathon, and, for him as well, this

:16:06. > :16:08.running quicker than anyone would is a race where he is going to be

:16:09. > :16:10.stepping a bit into unknown territory for himself, because

:16:11. > :16:16.stepping a bit into unknown maintains that pace he is well on,

:16:17. > :16:20.stepping a bit into unknown personal best. But it will hurt now,

:16:21. > :16:26.it will be a test of his endurance, can he maintain this case, can he

:16:27. > :16:27.get under 59 minutes, or close to 59 minutes, because that is the pace he

:16:28. > :16:37.has set out at. Mo Farah does hold the European

:16:38. > :16:44.record over the half marathon distance from Lisbon. Although he

:16:45. > :16:49.has run quicker on the South Shields Great North Run course. But he has

:16:50. > :16:51.not found himself to this point in a really fast from the start half

:16:52. > :16:56.marathon but he has today. He could really fast from the start half

:16:57. > :17:07.walk away from the race not getting a medal but having improved

:17:08. > :17:10.Record. So that is what is going on at the

:17:11. > :17:28.front. A little further back are the three

:17:29. > :17:35.British racers. In terms of the first group, the

:17:36. > :17:41.Kenyans and Ethiopians in the fore. And the Eritreans hoping to stayed

:17:42. > :17:51.on the medal roast ram. Information in from the statistician

:17:52. > :17:56.in Cardiff, is that Mo's 10K P B is 27.4. So not that far outside of it.

:17:57. > :18:03.in Cardiff, is that Mo's 10K P B is So a very quick pace being set on

:18:04. > :18:08.the streets of Cardiff. In spite of the streets of Cardiff. In spite of

:18:09. > :18:13.settled somewhat. The wind is not quite as bad. Within

:18:14. > :18:21.the streets and around the societalered

:18:22. > :18:27.bad. Fast, fast running here. These two

:18:28. > :18:32.guys at the front with Tamirat Tola trying to hang on. Two of the best

:18:33. > :18:38.distance runners in the world. And they will have their observe

:18:39. > :18:44.head-to-head. They have raced each other in the last 18 months.

:18:45. > :18:49.Geoffrey Kamworor has won five races recently.

:18:50. > :18:54.They know each other well. And Karoki has never lost a half

:18:55. > :18:58.marathon. He is four for four wins over 2014, 2015. So that is

:18:59. > :19:02.obviously a record that he isn't going to want to lose.

:19:03. > :19:04.He has that experience. He has maybe the knack for judging

:19:05. > :19:14.things right to get the victory. He has maybe the knack for judging

:19:15. > :19:19.If I understand his preparations correctly, he is intending to run

:19:20. > :19:23.the London Marathon as well. So a great indication of what

:19:24. > :19:28.happens what is to come in London this year if we get a good day.

:19:29. > :19:32.So two at the front for Kenya. They are pushing it on. Trying to

:19:33. > :19:40.run Tamirat Tola out of it if they can.

:19:41. > :19:49.Tamirat Tola himself is a trois marathon runner, he ran in Dubai.

:19:50. > :20:01.He is with those two at the moment. Then a little gap.

:20:02. > :20:10.Looking behind. Tamirat Tola, looking behind.

:20:11. > :20:18.Think these two at the front obviously feeling things a little

:20:19. > :20:27.bit. We keep coming back to the fact, if you have joined us

:20:28. > :20:32.recently, the runner at the front, Geoffrey Kamworor, he fell at the

:20:33. > :20:37.start. He had to pick himself up and somehow within a mile got into the

:20:38. > :20:42.lead group. For me, Paula, he looks like he is working hard. He has that

:20:43. > :20:48.grimace on his face. Even without falling this would be hard work. But

:20:49. > :20:56.he fell, and the first mile was the equivalent of 4. 15. He would have

:20:57. > :21:01.lost 10 to 15 seconds. You start a race with a 4. 15, you have to pay

:21:02. > :21:07.for it surely? You have to. I would have liked to have had a go-pro to

:21:08. > :21:11.see how he managed to make it up as fast as he did. He caught us by

:21:12. > :21:15.surprise. If you were around the starting mile area, tell us how he

:21:16. > :21:19.managed to make that gap up as quickly as he did. But without a

:21:20. > :21:26.doubt it has to hurt. As does racing at this pace. But he is pushing this

:21:27. > :21:31.on. A little while ago, they spread out across the road. Karoki was

:21:32. > :21:34.right across the road looking to Geoffrey Kamworor for guidance. They

:21:35. > :21:38.will have discussed the tactics before the race. There will be a

:21:39. > :21:45.point that they reach, where it will be every man for himself, trying to

:21:46. > :21:53.win the victory. But there, 13.41. It is the wind behind them. The

:21:54. > :21:59.women did run a fast 5K split. I would guess that the wind has picked

:22:00. > :22:03.up. But that is a very fast middle section of the race. No wonder that

:22:04. > :22:08.Tamirat Tola has been able to stay with this. The gaps going back to Mo

:22:09. > :22:15.Farah are growing. Paula, I hesitate to use the word

:22:16. > :22:21.world best but these guys are operating quicker than ever.

:22:22. > :22:25.Mo Farah is behind them but he has just broken the 15 kilometre record

:22:26. > :22:30.on the road. If he doesn't know he was going fast, I don't think he

:22:31. > :22:38.know what is the 15 K record is but he has just broken it, I am sure. He

:22:39. > :22:45.is not to have expected that. 42. 39 was the previous best. He is well in

:22:46. > :22:53.the low end of 42. It is coming up. 42. 03 officially. That is through

:22:54. > :22:59.15 kilometres. He knocked 20 seconds off it.

:23:00. > :23:03.Oh, Paula. If these guy, all of them, include Mo don't slow down, I

:23:04. > :23:08.will be surprised. This is hard for Mo Farah. It is a tough, tough race

:23:09. > :23:13.already. But he is running faster than he has ever done on the roads.

:23:14. > :23:18.That must give him confidence. It is a long time since I have seen

:23:19. > :23:23.Mo Farah hurting that much in a race. Probably back to the marathon

:23:24. > :23:27.debut in London. Hurting in the middle of the race and pushing on.

:23:28. > :23:33.But the pace he is running at, no wonder. You hope he has not been

:23:34. > :23:38.able to look at the 5 kilometre split to get that information. He

:23:39. > :23:45.will have seen the 15 kilometre. But had he seen that the guys have put

:23:46. > :23:50.in a 5 kilometre split at that pace that must do damage. Even though he

:23:51. > :23:58.is keeping that gap. It is about 100m. 22 seconds is not a far off.

:23:59. > :24:04.It is not growing significantly. Mo will be able to start moving back

:24:05. > :24:15.if he can keep concentration and not fatiguing too much.

:24:16. > :24:18.The great Eritrean, Zersenay Tadese, he is not here but

:24:19. > :24:32.The great Eritrean, Zersenay Tadese, fastest world marathon.

:24:33. > :24:34.If they are to run here and continue at this pace, they are on that

:24:35. > :24:39.record themselves. And Mo Farah at this pace, they are on that

:24:40. > :24:46.himself, setting records on the road in Cardiff. He may slow down but

:24:47. > :24:51.this has ban phenomenal from the man on the right, Geoffrey Kamworor.

:24:52. > :24:59.This is what he expected. Ten miles! Well we may not get a

:25:00. > :25:05.split. But that is phenomenal. That is, in a half marathon, you would

:25:06. > :25:07.win ten mile road races anywhere in the world with those
