:00:47. > :00:54.Welcome to the Ugandan capital, Kampala, for highlights of the 2017

:00:55. > :01:05.World Cross Country Championships. Some of the athletes in the world

:01:06. > :01:11.gather in the spiritual home of distance running, East Africa.

:01:12. > :01:14.Uganda's neighbours, Kenny and Ethiopian, are known for producing

:01:15. > :01:22.world-class distance runners, and it when it comes to cross-country, they

:01:23. > :01:27.are almost untouchable. S COMMENTATOR: And he comes away, an

:01:28. > :01:36.imposing figure, dominant, and that is an all-time record. Kwame of

:01:37. > :01:41.Ethiopia takes the gold. Since 1983, these two nations have

:01:42. > :01:47.won almost half of all the gold medals between them.

:01:48. > :01:51.One of the greatest distance runners that women's athletics has ever

:01:52. > :01:56.seen. So, can the Ugandans rise to the

:01:57. > :01:59.occasion on their home turf, or will we see yet more titles for Ethiopia

:02:00. > :02:10.and Kenya today? Here at the Kololo independence

:02:11. > :02:16.grounds, we have five races, with both individual and team medals up

:02:17. > :02:19.for grabs. The under 20 women and men run the shorter distances of six

:02:20. > :02:23.and eight kilometres respectively, and the senior races are both run

:02:24. > :02:28.over five laps of the two kilometre course. But for all that, it is the

:02:29. > :02:33.new event, the mixed relay, and eight kilometre race is run by teams

:02:34. > :02:41.of two Menard two women who each complete a two kilometre loop in any

:02:42. > :02:54.order that they choose, passing a bat on in the 20 metre zone. No

:02:55. > :03:00.British team in this event, but we have the three-time Olympic champion

:03:01. > :03:08.as Bill Kiprop and also Dibaba. And so most of the teams have gone for

:03:09. > :03:14.man, woman, man, woman. The USA have decided to put Paul Chelimo, they

:03:15. > :03:18.Olympic silver medallist, the last leg. The last leg is a little

:03:19. > :03:21.shorter, about 200 metres shorter because they go straight to the

:03:22. > :03:26.finish final, but the first three legs are all too kilometres. So here

:03:27. > :03:31.we go, mixed relay, for the first time ever, men running against

:03:32. > :03:40.women, and it will be interesting to see who gets the order right. It is

:03:41. > :03:52.as Bill Kiprop wasted on this first leg 's he will be if he doesn't put

:03:53. > :03:56.some distance between him and the others on this first lap. It is

:03:57. > :04:04.pretty flat, but there are one or two ups and downs, and there is a

:04:05. > :04:07.ditch, which has been a little controversial, it was considered to

:04:08. > :04:17.be dangerous, but we are told it has been filled in overnight. Kiprop in

:04:18. > :04:20.the lead, so let's see how he negotiates the first lap.

:04:21. > :04:24.Immediately we are seeing the impact of having chosen to put the women on

:04:25. > :04:27.the first leg, the teams are quickly separated into groups, and what

:04:28. > :04:31.happened with the Ugandan team as they saw the other guys step up, and

:04:32. > :04:34.they switched around at the last minute, I don't know whether they

:04:35. > :04:38.might be penalised for that, because they are not running the team in the

:04:39. > :04:44.order they had declared. Paula as ever looking at for the rules, and

:04:45. > :04:48.once you have declared, a bit like the four by 400 metres, you cannot

:04:49. > :04:54.change the order unless there is an injury. You cannot suddenly decide

:04:55. > :04:58.that you could change it at the last minute, so unless they went into

:04:59. > :05:09.re-declare based on some scenario involving an injury or illness, they

:05:10. > :05:16.may well be disqualified. Plenty of Kenny and support, Ugandan flags

:05:17. > :05:21.waving as well. Good crowds, Cory Leslie of the USA quite a long way

:05:22. > :05:33.back, so takes the wristband off, hands it over, and Ethiopian now and

:05:34. > :05:42.second place, they have Dibaba on the last leg. And here they have

:05:43. > :05:47.Bone Cheluke, one of their better-known athletes. So far, so

:05:48. > :05:53.good in the changeover, Paula. I didn't see any of them drop yet. We

:05:54. > :05:58.will only be able to see if they drop it there, because they can hold

:05:59. > :06:04.it in their fist, so you won't see a wristband or a baton evident, but

:06:05. > :06:08.she has gone off here, Winifred Bisegni, very fast.

:06:09. > :06:24.And in the background you can see Turkey, Turkey and Bahrain running

:06:25. > :06:29.with a team of transferred athletes. We were thinking that the Turkish

:06:30. > :06:42.team on paper looked very good. It has both the Kayas, with Yasmin

:06:43. > :06:49.Khan, and that team on paper looked very strong as a quartet, so not a

:06:50. > :07:00.good first leg for Turkey, way down on Kenya and Ethiopian, and Mbithe

:07:01. > :07:05.looks to be having... She sprinted off as if it were 800 metres, so be

:07:06. > :07:11.interesting to see, not only whether Bone Cheluke, whether one or two of

:07:12. > :07:17.the other teams can just get a little bit closer. And now Turkey

:07:18. > :07:30.are coming into it, you can see Miriam actor. Ethiopian now closing

:07:31. > :07:34.it down, and Turkey, Akdag is suffering in third place. Back in

:07:35. > :07:38.front of the crowd, and getting a lot of support from the grandstands,

:07:39. > :07:45.and this is an area where they will be able to get a clear view ahead of

:07:46. > :07:47.them through the transfers own, and hopefully able to see their next

:07:48. > :07:51.runner being ushered out to take the wristband from them and to be able

:07:52. > :07:56.to go on with their race. Uganda are closing, they are in fourth place,

:07:57. > :08:02.getting a bit closer, and we are assuming that that is Winnie

:08:03. > :08:08.Nanyondo, she was initially down to do the first leg, and whether or

:08:09. > :08:13.not... That is Ronald Musagala waiting for them. Will the change be

:08:14. > :08:30.looked upon leniently by the officials? So, there is gone if the

:08:31. > :08:38.Kejelcha waiting to go, and Akdag collapses at the end, exhausted. And

:08:39. > :08:47.you would think that what they have to do here is go out, not hang

:08:48. > :08:53.around. Bernard Koros needs to move, make Kejelcha regret his early

:08:54. > :08:57.effort. You have got to think that if she is within ten or 15 seconds,

:08:58. > :09:02.she has got a great chance of closing the gap, so Kejelcha has a

:09:03. > :09:11.job to do for his team, but we can set Turkey with Ali Kaya chasing

:09:12. > :09:17.him. Bernard Koros really has to work hard here and build up as much

:09:18. > :09:25.of a cushion as he can for Beatrice Chepkoech on the last leg, her best

:09:26. > :09:31.is still 13 seconds behind Inzy Dibaba who will be trying to chase

:09:32. > :09:40.her down. They will be being chased down by the likes of Paul Chelimo.

:09:41. > :09:45.No, they switched around for Uganda, he was originally supposed to be

:09:46. > :09:51.going on the final leg. That gap is not getting any smaller. We are in

:09:52. > :09:57.for a real humdinger on this last leg, as Kenya will have the lead, it

:09:58. > :10:01.is a big lead, and we are expecting it to be round about 15 seconds.

:10:02. > :10:05.There is Kejelcha doing his best to try to close it, and every second he

:10:06. > :10:11.gets closer, just giving Dibaba something to race for. Ali Kaya has

:10:12. > :10:15.moved into third Turkey, and this is Bernard Koros coming to the end of

:10:16. > :10:26.his leg, and he will hand over to Beatrice

:10:27. > :10:39.Chepkoech, she is waiting, and Kejelcha will be waiting to take

:10:40. > :10:47.advantage of them tiring. It is less than 2000 metres ahead of them now.

:10:48. > :10:56.Kenya are first, here we go. Watch the clock here. Ethiopian awaiting

:10:57. > :11:03.as Kenya race away. And Dibaba, she will have a real task on her hands.

:11:04. > :11:09.It is less than 15 seconds, there she is, probably 11 or 12 seconds. I

:11:10. > :11:15.think that is game over. She has got the bit between her teeth and she is

:11:16. > :11:19.chasing hard, and Beatrice Chepkoech knows she is being chased and is

:11:20. > :11:22.going as fast as she can, but she needs to stay in control as well,

:11:23. > :11:29.because this course has a sting in the tail as well as we have seen at

:11:30. > :11:33.the end, we have seen that on previous laps, and that is on the

:11:34. > :11:36.closing half of the second loop, she needs to maintain her form, maintain

:11:37. > :11:44.her concentration and paste this right. Look at that, she is

:11:45. > :11:47.definitely not moving that well, and there is still plenty of time for

:11:48. > :11:52.Dibaba, if she can get within three or four seconds. A little look over

:11:53. > :11:56.her shoulder for Chepkoech, if she can get within three or four seconds

:11:57. > :12:00.with 400 to go, then of course we have to bear in mind, it is not a

:12:01. > :12:04.full lap, this one, and it might be that she is going to run out of

:12:05. > :12:08.distance and run out of time. We expected her to close this gap

:12:09. > :12:11.quicker than she has done. She can obviously see the run in front of

:12:12. > :12:14.her that she needs to chase down, but she is also getting a lot of

:12:15. > :12:19.encouragement from the Ethiopian team management and supporters at

:12:20. > :12:23.the court. We will get more of an idea of how comfortable she is as

:12:24. > :12:30.she negotiates hill now, and how well she runs up and down that. She

:12:31. > :12:34.just looks very heavy legged to me, as though she is not getting the

:12:35. > :12:37.return from this ground that the others are and that she would be

:12:38. > :12:41.accustomed to getting when she races on the track. I think this is going

:12:42. > :12:45.to be really close, she has got the bit between her teeth now and she is

:12:46. > :12:51.within seven or eight seconds. Is she going to run out of time? Has

:12:52. > :12:56.she got the ability to judge a big kick? Surely Chepkoech has saved a

:12:57. > :13:02.little for the finish here, and she is just 20, 30 metres ahead, and the

:13:03. > :13:07.victory could be hers. Choppy stride up that last little rise, a few more

:13:08. > :13:11.twists and turns, and the last thing she should do is look behind,

:13:12. > :13:15.because I think it is going to be only one thing she is going to see,

:13:16. > :13:20.Dibaba trying to pick-up, but there is not far to go now. And we can set

:13:21. > :13:25.Dibaba is still not close enough, there she is, and it is getting down

:13:26. > :13:32.to four or five seconds, but that is still a lot to make up. Dibaba is

:13:33. > :13:36.sprinting already. Now Dibaba looks like she usually looks. She can see

:13:37. > :13:40.in front of her, she should know how far she has got left to go, and has

:13:41. > :13:44.she got enough left to be able to close this gap, or has Beatrice

:13:45. > :13:49.Chepkoech just saved enough to be able to finish this race of hard?

:13:50. > :13:53.She is still about for about half seconds behind, and that is a big

:13:54. > :13:58.gap to make up in what is only about 300 metres left to run. Kenya

:13:59. > :14:02.leading the first ever mixed relay at the world cross-country

:14:03. > :14:05.Championships, Dibaba, the person you so would want to have on the

:14:06. > :14:10.last leg, and with just 100 metres to go, she is going to run out of

:14:11. > :14:13.time. It is going to be a gold medal for Kenya, beating their great

:14:14. > :14:18.rivals, and that may well be down to tactics, the first leg, Kiprop gave

:14:19. > :14:24.them the lead, they never really wished it, and despite the efforts

:14:25. > :14:30.of Kejelcha and Dibaba, Kenya win the relay. Dibaba gives up the chase

:14:31. > :14:37.in the end, it wasn't quite there for her today, she takes the silver

:14:38. > :14:41.for Ethiopian, and then the European cross-country champion Can brings

:14:42. > :14:58.home the bronze for Turkey. So, the women's junior race, under

:14:59. > :15:05.20s, gets under way in Kampala at this course. Oh, a false start, he

:15:06. > :15:08.is trying to stop them. Athletes are doing what they always should do,

:15:09. > :15:13.Paula, keep going until somebody literally jumps in front of you.

:15:14. > :15:18.That official looked as though he was trying to, and then changed his

:15:19. > :15:22.mind. Anyway, we think we are under way here, a few anxious glances

:15:23. > :15:26.behind to see if everybody is following, and yes they are, and

:15:27. > :15:29.inevitably, Kenya and Ethiopian to the fore in the early stages, but

:15:30. > :15:36.I'm glad to say there is a British contingent in this race as well.

:15:37. > :16:02.It was a messy start, equally in the relay

:16:03. > :16:07.race has went off earlier, they didn't hold them very long. Almost

:16:08. > :16:10.immediately the gun went. I think some were caught unawares. I didn't

:16:11. > :16:12.hear a recall gone but they ran out onto the course is to try to stop

:16:13. > :16:15.them. For the under 20 women, for many of them it's their first

:16:16. > :16:17.experience of the world Cross country so they don't have any

:16:18. > :16:19.experience of this happening before and they will have just carried on

:16:20. > :16:23.running the race and hoping if nobody runs out in front of you and

:16:24. > :16:28.tells you you have to go back, once you get past certain distance nobody

:16:29. > :16:32.will come back to get you. How would you describe it, a warm summer 's

:16:33. > :16:36.day in the UK, but thankfully without the humidity which could

:16:37. > :16:42.make it feel a lot worse. They are just about quarter of a way round

:16:43. > :16:46.the second lap. Some gaps starting to appear now. Ethiopia only had

:16:47. > :16:51.four in the lead group, now it looks like they have got three but it

:16:52. > :17:05.looks like some of the Kenyans are starting to struggle. Chemutai for

:17:06. > :17:14.Uganda in fourth place. The Kenyan challenge is down to two. Chespol

:17:15. > :17:22.was certainly the favourite coming into this but Lobun is certainly

:17:23. > :17:27.having a good run here. These three seem to have the medals between

:17:28. > :17:34.them. Heading into the last lap, I apologise for not being able to give

:17:35. > :17:38.you more updates on the British contingent. The readout of where

:17:39. > :17:43.people are does not seem to be working. You can see they run across

:17:44. > :17:47.the mats. I think perhaps it is because the previous mixed relay

:17:48. > :17:59.race hadn't quite finished before this race got under way so that may

:18:00. > :18:12.explain why. Now, can Chespol, the prerace Kenyan favourite, take on

:18:13. > :18:19.this? Look how comfortable she is, she's off. She's not even waiting.

:18:20. > :18:23.She felt so good she decided to push on with this race, maybe that's why

:18:24. > :18:26.she was looking at her watch so much because she couldn't believe they

:18:27. > :18:30.weren't running quicker. Certainly the fact we are not getting any

:18:31. > :18:34.details on the lapse here maybe indicate what they were trying to

:18:35. > :18:39.recall them for at the start because there didn't seem a lot wrong with

:18:40. > :18:42.the start so maybe they realised the previous race hadn't finished so

:18:43. > :18:48.they shouldn't have started this race now. But there won't be any

:18:49. > :18:53.question here about the winners. She glides down the hill and negotiates

:18:54. > :18:57.the uphills with even more ease and she looks even more comfortable now

:18:58. > :19:01.that she has opened up the pace and she is stretching away with every

:19:02. > :19:12.stride from the two Kenyan athletes behind her. So Gidey of Ethiopia

:19:13. > :19:25.comes home and the magnificent style to retain the title she won two

:19:26. > :19:32.years ago in China. The previous person to do that went on to become

:19:33. > :19:49.the Olympic champion. Gidey, and indeed her team-mate, Feysa, has had

:19:50. > :19:55.a storming finish. A very tired Chespol comes through for the bronze

:19:56. > :20:00.medal for Kenya and they will be hoping that third, fourth, fifth, we

:20:01. > :20:04.have three Kenyans, three Ethiopians... Has she crossed the

:20:05. > :20:09.line? I think she has crossed the line. It will be about the next

:20:10. > :20:16.counter and it may well be... We will have to wait officially. Kenya

:20:17. > :20:21.have got four in now but only two places ahead of Ethiopia. Sadly we

:20:22. > :20:29.still don't have a full results from the women's. Race I suspect the

:20:30. > :20:40.times they were giving me" hand times. This is Chemutai for Uganda,

:20:41. > :20:47.certainly one of the prerace favourites if they have any chance

:20:48. > :20:55.of individual gold it may well come in this race. That man there,

:20:56. > :21:02.Kimunyan, may challenge from the Kenyan point of view. We have

:21:03. > :21:09.Britain represented, Scott Beatty, Benjamin Davis, Luke Pryor, Jonathan

:21:10. > :21:13.Shields and Sam Stevens from Leicester competing for Great

:21:14. > :21:22.Britain in this under 20 event. Here we go. So the under 20 men get under

:21:23. > :21:30.way. 106 competitors from 28 different countries. Four laps of

:21:31. > :21:35.the two kilometre loop. The fast, racing start as normal. Ethiopia

:21:36. > :21:45.trying to get up there with the Kenyans, and it may well be the

:21:46. > :21:51.contender from Uganda, Chemutai, who may be the one who upsets the

:21:52. > :21:57.applecart in terms of the dominance of tenure. Great Britain will be

:21:58. > :22:05.hoping they can have a good experience here. But as ever, it is

:22:06. > :22:09.a fast start and they twist and turn down to the first non-flat section,

:22:10. > :22:15.shall I call it, where they drop down a little bit. The decline and

:22:16. > :22:21.then back up again. It will just take them probably half a kilometre

:22:22. > :22:26.or so to settle down. There's one or two in there who might have gone off

:22:27. > :22:31.a little bit too fast. Always a temptation in your first world cross

:22:32. > :22:34.country, you want to get yourself in a good condition so you need to

:22:35. > :22:38.start well enough to get yourself in a good position without getting

:22:39. > :22:44.yourself too much into heavy legs lactic acid territory. I think we

:22:45. > :22:53.saw at least one athlete there committing that sin of going off far

:22:54. > :22:58.too fast and that is race over. It will take them a little while to

:22:59. > :23:02.settle down, then thankfully we are back on board with technology so you

:23:03. > :23:07.will be able to see the names scrolling through. The British team,

:23:08. > :23:08.interestingly, Jonathan Shields who won the English counties

:23:09. > :23:26.cross-country championship trial. Actually for all mothers today,

:23:27. > :23:47.happy Mother's Day. Barega is attacking strongly now.

:23:48. > :23:51.You have to expect that he has studied this and know where his

:23:52. > :23:56.strengths and weaknesses lie on this course. He was again looking at his

:23:57. > :24:00.watch, I have no idea why unless they are getting messages but I

:24:01. > :24:04.think they would not have time to study that at this point and he

:24:05. > :24:11.certainly has the support of the entire crowd almost today. Behind,

:24:12. > :24:15.they would dearly love to see the Ugandan athletes win this but the

:24:16. > :24:23.race is far from won at this stage. He has a lot of strong company

:24:24. > :24:26.around him, Barega looking controlled but still comfortable.

:24:27. > :24:30.Another little look across to gauge which is working harder at this

:24:31. > :24:40.point, the two Kenyan athletes now together. Kimunyan, starting to look

:24:41. > :24:51.more heavy load. Kimunyan tried to go past Kirui. If anything happens

:24:52. > :25:04.here, he will be the one who has a chance. Look at Kiplimo, and

:25:05. > :25:08.Kimunyan is recognising the challenge. Look at the support he's

:25:09. > :25:14.getting. Opening up a lead already of about ten metres from the chasing

:25:15. > :25:23.Kimunyan now. He has moved into second place so it is Uganda in the

:25:24. > :25:28.shape of this man, Jacob Kiplimo. Can he give the home crowd something

:25:29. > :25:38.to cheer? He started quickly on this last lap but there is about one mile

:25:39. > :25:45.of running left. Here, Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda, and it seems half the

:25:46. > :25:48.crowd have managed to get into the infield but that doesn't matter. All

:25:49. > :25:53.of his team-mates, in fact lots of other teams I think cheering this

:25:54. > :25:57.man on because it means the atmosphere has been ratcheted up.

:25:58. > :26:09.Look at the seams, absolutely superb. Kampala have got themselves

:26:10. > :26:13.a hero here. Jacob Kiplimo with plenty of company, but none of them

:26:14. > :26:19.thankfully for him are in the race! None of them will stop him taking

:26:20. > :26:23.this title. Although the gap is closing all the time, he has one

:26:24. > :26:29.more turn. He looks pretty tired and it is a quick chase on but he only

:26:30. > :26:33.has 150 metres to go. That gap is closing all the time, he needs to be

:26:34. > :26:42.aware of that. He needs to pick up here. We are all getting anxious for

:26:43. > :26:46.him. The chase is really on. Surely Kiplimo has enough left here as he

:26:47. > :26:57.comes into the home straight. Here he comes, what a victory it is going

:26:58. > :27:04.to be for him. A real chase from Walelegn, the chaser, but Kiplimo

:27:05. > :27:11.takes the gold medal. Held off a late challenge from the Ethiopian,

:27:12. > :27:17.Walelegn. Everybody, I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter which country you

:27:18. > :27:22.are from spectating, enjoyed the home win there. Confirmation of the

:27:23. > :27:29.result of the junior race. A fantastic first ever gold medal at

:27:30. > :27:34.the junior race for Jacob Kiplimo and Uganda. Some confirmation on the

:27:35. > :27:45.British athletes, Sam Stevens 43rd, Jonathan Shields 60th position. Luke

:27:46. > :28:03.Pryor, 80th. Ben Davis, 87. So away they go, the senior women,

:28:04. > :28:09.heading off on this extended course for the first time in terms of

:28:10. > :28:13.distance, just short of ten kilometres, over 100 competitors

:28:14. > :28:19.from 31 different countries including Great Britain, and the

:28:20. > :28:25.usual stampede at the beginning, and already it's just starting to settle

:28:26. > :28:27.down a little bit. These good conditions providing great

:28:28. > :28:32.opportunity for the track runners to really show what they can do against

:28:33. > :28:38.the better cross-country exponents, so the fact this race is over the

:28:39. > :28:42.longer distance, not a distance that they will be frightened about at

:28:43. > :28:53.all, but it changes the dynamic little bit of the race. In this

:28:54. > :29:03.race, the defending champion, Tirop, already to the fore. We have the

:29:04. > :29:09.Olympic 3000 metres steeplechase champion and record holder as well.

:29:10. > :29:12.And as of a strong Ethiopian team to try and take the title, both

:29:13. > :29:21.individually and in terms of the team race. Great Britain, as I said,

:29:22. > :29:29.four competitors, led by the British team captain here. They will be

:29:30. > :29:38.hoping that certainly all four of them can run well enough to raise

:29:39. > :29:43.the team up the rankings. Five laps of this twisty, turning course,

:29:44. > :29:49.obstacles not really providing too much of a challenge to any of the

:29:50. > :29:53.athletes really. Just need to watch your feet when you are in the crowd

:29:54. > :29:58.there but apart from that nothing too much to worry about. The first

:29:59. > :30:04.of the massive mountains on this course here, up and over they go.

:30:05. > :30:07.That's like the Hickstead Hill, remember that? Showjumping on

:30:08. > :30:11.grandstand on a Saturday afternoon? There used to be a little mound,

:30:12. > :30:18.never mind. The viewers will know what I'm talking about.

:30:19. > :30:23.What it might have done is just break up the race a little bit,

:30:24. > :30:26.because of all of the races so far today, this is certainly the most

:30:27. > :30:31.bunched together in the beginning, maybe because they have increased

:30:32. > :30:34.the distance a little, and the ladies are taking some time to

:30:35. > :30:38.settle over this first lap before they really start racing. What it

:30:39. > :30:43.does mean is that when they do come around to those logs, it will mean

:30:44. > :30:45.more difficult for the runners in the pack, because they won't see

:30:46. > :30:50.them coming, so they will have to have remembered where they are

:30:51. > :30:56.placed and anticipate and react fairly quickly so we don't have any

:30:57. > :31:00.fall is. But so far, the hills or bumps not having much impact on this

:31:01. > :31:08.race, and not really breaking it up very much. It is already stretching

:31:09. > :31:12.out a little bit, Paula. We were saying there was a big group in that

:31:13. > :31:15.first lap, people can get overexcited and start to drop off

:31:16. > :31:24.the group, little gaps start to appear. A little bit of pace being

:31:25. > :31:35.applied. That is Givet, just wants to stay close. This lead group,

:31:36. > :31:44.comprising mainly of Kenyans, only to fairy and Jebet in that group who

:31:45. > :31:55.are not Kenyan. You see those team standings going through, that was

:31:56. > :32:00.after two laps. And we are looking for the defending champion, who I

:32:01. > :32:04.would have thought might be struggling a little bit, and appears

:32:05. > :32:11.to be doing so, just not going with this little bit of pick-up of pace,

:32:12. > :32:16.and Kipyegon allowing her lesser-known team-mates to push on

:32:17. > :32:22.here. Just a quick update on the British contingent after two laps.

:32:23. > :32:26.They are being led by Louise Small who moved up to 50 Fourth Place. It

:32:27. > :32:30.is a different tactic to what we have seen from the Americans who

:32:31. > :32:34.have gone out hard and try to maintain it, the British athletes

:32:35. > :32:45.were 80th after the first lap. Louise Small, in 60th, and Claire

:32:46. > :32:58.duck and Rebecca Murray behind her in 80th and 81st. To drop has quite

:32:59. > :33:02.a bit of tape around her there, I am wondering if she is carrying an

:33:03. > :33:04.injury, she would have hoped to figure highly here, she has been

:33:05. > :33:10.racing well so far this year, but doesn't look able to compete with

:33:11. > :33:21.these four, away and running very strongly.

:33:22. > :33:30.Kipyegon was there, she was, but all of a sudden she is not. It is the

:33:31. > :33:35.pace that these two are applying at the front to the lesser-known,

:33:36. > :33:39.certainly Irene Cheptai a little better known than the youngster, but

:33:40. > :33:50.these three pulling away from Kipyegon. It is getting tough out

:33:51. > :33:54.there now. A Kenyan victory means a lot to these girls at the world

:33:55. > :33:58.cross-country, to be able to go back home and say that you won the world

:33:59. > :34:02.cross-country, it is a big thing for them, so each one of these girls

:34:03. > :34:07.will want to come away from this with the victory, and Faith Kipyegon

:34:08. > :34:12.isn't out of this yet. The gap is growing, but she is not falling back

:34:13. > :34:16.very fast. If one of these would tire, which can happen, the way we

:34:17. > :34:21.have talked about how the Kenyan athletes can race, it is feasible

:34:22. > :34:26.that at least one of these could drift back, but Rogge blew not all

:34:27. > :34:34.of them. Faith Kipyegon is going to have a long run, and she is going to

:34:35. > :34:45.have to keep working hard, as is Agnes to

:34:46. > :34:52.These three look to have it between them, Faith Kipyegon further back

:34:53. > :35:00.with a team-mate just watching these three continuing to move away. The

:35:01. > :35:06.Kenyan one, two, three, a clean sweep, in fact it is Kenya one to

:35:07. > :35:13.five at the moment, and Kipyegon looks tired. That is my point, it

:35:14. > :35:17.doesn't matter how good and fit you are, when psychologically in

:35:18. > :35:24.cross-country it goes, then goodness me, you can end up losing 20 places

:35:25. > :35:30.on the last lap. New line so, the last lap, three Kenyans, the fourth

:35:31. > :35:38.place at the Olympic Games, the one who looks to be struggling just at

:35:39. > :35:42.the moment, Alice Apra, and then the Kenyan cross-country champion, Irene

:35:43. > :35:47.Cheptai in second place, just sitting behind her team-mate,

:35:48. > :35:55.unbeaten in 2017 in cross-country, but leading is the youngster, Lilian

:35:56. > :36:00.Rengeruk, a big surprise here. Faith Kipyegon really struggling now, and

:36:01. > :36:04.the defending champion, Agnes Tirop, nowhere to be seen. It is about

:36:05. > :36:09.these three, no challenge from Ethiopia at all, and they are on the

:36:10. > :36:17.last lap and heading for a Kenyan clean sweep. It is hard to pick one

:36:18. > :36:21.out from those three. You keep wondering, she looks a bit tired as

:36:22. > :36:31.we watch the others coming through here, but lapping runners now. Watch

:36:32. > :36:35.her up this hill, struggling, she just doesn't get up the hill, and

:36:36. > :36:39.there are couple of those, suddenly the gap appears, she works as back,

:36:40. > :36:44.the next hill comes and she loses it again, that is soul destroying. Yes,

:36:45. > :36:47.and it is giving a mental advantage to these two who are able to work

:36:48. > :36:50.together, they sensed that she struggled up that hill and they

:36:51. > :36:56.picked it up a little, and she is also looking very ginger in the way

:36:57. > :37:00.she is looking going down the hill, but when they have to go up and

:37:01. > :37:08.over, she loses more ground because she really goes very gingerly down

:37:09. > :37:16.the hill. Wet in contrast to Irene Cheptai and Lilian Rengeruk, they

:37:17. > :37:19.let themselves go downhill, and that is a technique that you would expect

:37:20. > :37:23.Aprot to have a little better, so maybe she is feeling something as

:37:24. > :37:27.she goes down those hills. About half way round this last lap, maybe

:37:28. > :37:33.a kilometre, maybe a little less to go, but all of a sudden, the Kenyan

:37:34. > :37:40.champion of 2017 is now attempting to become the world champion here,

:37:41. > :37:43.and immediately, Aprot, a little belatedly, moves past her team-mate

:37:44. > :37:46.to try to give chase, but there is only one person looking strong at

:37:47. > :37:52.the moment, still plenty of distance to go with two of those hills to

:37:53. > :37:56.come as well, you just suspect that Aprot will lose even more ground on

:37:57. > :38:03.her team-mate. She had a great year in 2016, Cheptai, not as quick as

:38:04. > :38:07.many of her team-mates on the track, but when you are an improving

:38:08. > :38:12.athlete, your time is come down. Then you come onto the area where

:38:13. > :38:14.you think, this is where I am strongest, cross-country, carry that

:38:15. > :38:20.confidence into the winter as she obviously has, and now she is trying

:38:21. > :38:25.hard to get a winning gap between her and her team-mate, but she is

:38:26. > :38:32.not giving this up, Aprot. Fourth in Rio, heading for a medal here, but

:38:33. > :38:37.she will lose ground. Look at Irene Cheptai, again takes another three

:38:38. > :38:41.or four metres out of her team-mate. She just looks so much more

:38:42. > :38:49.comfortable, and then she maintains that momentum and uses it to drive

:38:50. > :38:55.away still further. Surely Cheptai has done enough now, she hasn't

:38:56. > :38:58.looked behind, eyes forward, concentrating on the closing stages,

:38:59. > :39:05.the last couple of hundred metres here. Let's make sure she takes the

:39:06. > :39:10.finishing the final, and the Kenyan flag alongside her will be something

:39:11. > :39:14.she will be carrying soon, because the finish line will be in sight

:39:15. > :39:18.when she comes round the last bend, she has a few seconds advantage over

:39:19. > :39:24.her team-mate, she is not going to close but now, it will be gold medal

:39:25. > :39:27.for Irene Cheptai, unbeaten in 2017 over cross-country, and she has

:39:28. > :39:32.carried that form to the most important race and the most

:39:33. > :39:38.important win of her career. Cheptai of Kenya becomes the world

:39:39. > :39:46.cross-country champion. Gold to her. Silver goes to Alice Aprot in second

:39:47. > :39:50.place, and in the clean sweep the Kenya completed as the youngster

:39:51. > :39:58.crosses the line, the great performance from Lilian Rengeruk to

:39:59. > :40:05.take the bronze medal. Cheptai is completely out there, she is

:40:06. > :40:08.rewarded with the gold medal, and setting those Kenyan flags flying by

:40:09. > :40:12.being so strong on that last lap there. She has paid for it a little

:40:13. > :40:30.bit, big sprint finish in the end. Hyvin Jepkemoi, and Agnes Tirop,

:40:31. > :40:34.just watching them coming in. Just haven't really been able to

:40:35. > :40:41.challenge the big names. They are all struggling a little bit. That

:40:42. > :40:47.was tough. Kenya of course will win the team race, very much their day

:40:48. > :40:53.in the women's senior race. Individual gold and team gold for

:40:54. > :40:57.Kenya. So, the winner of the gold medal, Irene Cheptai of Kenya,

:40:58. > :41:07.A-list Aprot taking the silver medal, and the 19-year-old Lilian

:41:08. > :41:11.Rengeruk taking the bronze. The Ethiopians not being able to muster

:41:12. > :41:18.much of a challenge, complete Kenyan dominance in the women's senior

:41:19. > :41:25.race. Luis Moore, 37, Rebecca Murray not too far behind, about 13 seconds

:41:26. > :41:31.behind her, 40 First. One more race to go today, but before that, a

:41:32. > :41:34.reminder that there is international football on this weekend, World Cup

:41:35. > :41:40.qualifiers, coverage of Scotland's must win game against Slovenia on

:41:41. > :41:45.the BBC website. You can catch up with all things rugby game the Super

:41:46. > :41:48.League Show on Tuesday, and the next athletics will be the London

:41:49. > :41:51.Marathon in just a few weeks run on the streets of the city that will

:41:52. > :41:58.host this year's track and field World Championships.

:41:59. > :42:13.COMMENTATOR: Usain Bolt has done it! Clinic it is a new British record.

:42:14. > :42:20.It is a mammoth job. Sophie Hitchon, what an effort. Elaine Thompson has

:42:21. > :42:25.Olympic gold. A new British record.

:42:26. > :42:30.Rudisha is going to win the world title.

:42:31. > :42:33.That was a beautiful job. Laura Muir has smashed the British

:42:34. > :42:44.record. Mo Farah wins the gold.

:42:45. > :42:57.Big support, including of course Stephen Cooper, and

:42:58. > :43:07.they have a lot of experience in that Ugandan team, so Kenya, names

:43:08. > :43:16.that you will recognise as you go down, full of experience. They are

:43:17. > :43:21.just about ready to go. We wait for the call forward, and here we go.

:43:22. > :43:34.The men's senior race gets under way with a rather quiet starting pistol.

:43:35. > :43:42.They will sprint for 200 metres, followed by 9700 metres of hard

:43:43. > :43:45.running after that. A few people right up at the beginning will not

:43:46. > :43:49.last for long, they are just jostling here for a little bit of

:43:50. > :43:54.position. And then they will start to settle down. So the senior men, I

:43:55. > :44:06.highlight of the programme for many, and maybe some big names in the

:44:07. > :44:12.women's race, but it is Kamworor, the defending champion, who has gone

:44:13. > :44:16.off there. They will be hoping to cheer their men to at least a medal

:44:17. > :44:23.after winning the junior gold medal, they will be hoping for more of the

:44:24. > :44:26.same here. The pace looks, despite the big group, they haven't looked

:44:27. > :44:30.as though they have settled down to much yet, looks as though they are

:44:31. > :44:35.pushing on the front a little bit, look at that, lots of people

:44:36. > :44:39.close-up. And some of those are going to pay a

:44:40. > :44:45.little bit further down the line, that is for certain, as they come to

:44:46. > :44:48.compete the first lap. It is the biggest pack so far, and you see the

:44:49. > :44:51.danger as they come through that narrow area to finish the first

:44:52. > :44:54.loop, because the course narrows down very quickly and there are a

:44:55. > :44:58.lot of cones which mark the way down to the finish when they come round

:44:59. > :45:01.on the final lap, and some of the guys were getting dangerously close

:45:02. > :45:06.to some of those cones in the way. But they just didn't seem to have

:45:07. > :45:15.been any falling, they negotiated the logs as well as they negotiated

:45:16. > :45:20.the cones. And now they are starting to push on a little bit, but nobody

:45:21. > :45:24.really wanted to pick up anything from this, because it is already

:45:25. > :45:27.ticking along very fast, and not really having much inroads on the

:45:28. > :45:39.pack. That early pace already starting to

:45:40. > :45:44.take its toll, Paula. A big group, just over a kilometre ago they were

:45:45. > :45:49.bunched up, now they are spread out. Yes, a big difference in terms of

:45:50. > :45:54.how well they are bunched. You can see the big contenders we would have

:45:55. > :46:00.expected to be up there. Most I think are up there in that group.

:46:01. > :46:05.Maybe the fact the race is shorter than the guys are used to is having

:46:06. > :46:12.a bit of an impact. They cannot take that first lap so much to settle in

:46:13. > :46:15.because they only have for more laps to follow-on after that. They need

:46:16. > :46:21.to knuckle down, and they have done that here today. We still have the

:46:22. > :46:27.contenders, the Kenyans leading at the front. There is a big Ugandan

:46:28. > :46:33.contingent, they are going over the hill so they will be hoping to get

:46:34. > :46:37.individual honours as well as team honours if possible, and Kenyans

:46:38. > :46:41.will have been fired up by that first ever clean sweep of the first

:46:42. > :46:47.six places in the world Cross country, certainly in the senior

:46:48. > :46:54.women's race. So still settling down as they approach the closing stages

:46:55. > :46:59.of the second lap already, and I don't know if they are getting

:47:00. > :47:03.nervous but I am because our computer results are struggling to

:47:04. > :47:08.give an update in what happened in long one so I'm hoping it comes to

:47:09. > :47:16.life in la two, otherwise it will be difficult to keep you updated with

:47:17. > :47:25.how teams are progressing. So, Uganda up there with three in the

:47:26. > :47:29.leading group. There is Moller, I mentioned him at the beginning. He

:47:30. > :47:34.has become one of those rare animals who has won the Ethiopian track

:47:35. > :47:37.championships as well as cross-country but he's not a big

:47:38. > :47:42.name. He's never had a chance to show what he can do on this sort of

:47:43. > :47:48.stage so the fact he hasn't started so quickly, that doesn't bode well

:47:49. > :47:54.for him. There is the first of the Ethiopians coming into the picture

:47:55. > :47:59.now. Then Moller at the back of the lead group and already seems to be

:48:00. > :48:06.struggling with his pace. Yes, struggling to hang on to the

:48:07. > :48:15.coat-tails of Edris just ahead of him. He is at his best, he has just

:48:16. > :48:22.moved up onto the shoulder of the runner in front and is very much

:48:23. > :48:29.involved. Moller has just drifted back into third. He will not be able

:48:30. > :48:33.to work his way back. We are not seeing reckless surging at the front

:48:34. > :48:37.of this race, it is a sustained increase in pace and if you are not

:48:38. > :48:39.able to go with that, working your way back into it will be very

:48:40. > :49:10.difficult. So Cheptegei, and Kamworor right up

:49:11. > :49:15.there. Even for an athlete as good as he is, if you are not in shape,

:49:16. > :49:24.you cannot attack in this early stage so he's obviously feeling fit

:49:25. > :49:50.and confident enough. The pace is fast, you can just tell the

:49:51. > :49:55.lead... There were questions about his shape coming in but I don't

:49:56. > :50:04.think he would have come to an event as a significant as the world

:50:05. > :50:14.cross-country if he wasn't there far enough to commit to racing strongly

:50:15. > :50:20.and racing well at this stage. How quickly these gaps are opening up,

:50:21. > :50:28.and Cheptegei is doing damage in this race. It will be interesting to

:50:29. > :50:36.-- because we have seen when they come through for second or third,

:50:37. > :50:47.and all of the sudden, Cheptegei is taking the defending champion,

:50:48. > :50:53.Geoffrey Kamworor, with him. As Paula was saying, he surely prepared

:50:54. > :50:57.himself for this but it is a brave effort. It is hard running at this

:50:58. > :51:05.part of the race and there is still a long way to go here. A couple of

:51:06. > :51:10.laps, four kilometres of running. Cheptegei, forging on. This time he

:51:11. > :51:14.will hear the bell and that in himself will be a mass of

:51:15. > :51:23.encouragement to him. We do get a little bit of data, it was a seven

:51:24. > :51:29.second gap. It looks reasonably accurate. I didn't like the look

:51:30. > :51:33.over his shoulder that Kamworor gave, as if he's more worried about

:51:34. > :51:39.the danger coming from behind him and holding that off. That means

:51:40. > :51:44.Cheptegei has gained the first psychological victory in turning the

:51:45. > :51:51.screw, he has managed to get the gap far enough that has he broken the

:51:52. > :51:54.invisible thread that was linking Kamworor to him? Certainly he is

:51:55. > :51:59.getting huge support from the crowds which will fire him on. I don't

:52:00. > :52:06.think it is too soon, he knows this course inside out and backwards and

:52:07. > :52:10.he knows where his strengths and weaknesses lie. A lot of this will

:52:11. > :52:16.be noise and support but information too on how big the gap is and isn't

:52:17. > :52:22.going away with each stride or is it being closed down with each stride?

:52:23. > :52:28.As he takes the last gap, Uganda have got the man in the front, the

:52:29. > :52:35.man leading, and the crowd going absolutely crazy here and why not.

:52:36. > :52:40.Just 20 years of age, great performance at the Olympic Games

:52:41. > :52:44.last year. The only thing that will be a slight disappointment to him is

:52:45. > :52:49.that you might have dreamt of becoming Uganda's first of gold

:52:50. > :52:54.medallist in the world cross-country championships, well sadly for him

:52:55. > :52:58.but not his country he will be the second man because his junior

:52:59. > :53:04.team-mate already took the under 20 title. What a day for the host

:53:05. > :53:11.nation here. Yes, he has raced this hard with a lot of knowledge of the

:53:12. > :53:14.course. It isn't won yet, Kamworor still looks strong but he isn't able

:53:15. > :53:27.to raise his pace enough to be able to compete with the pace Cheptegei

:53:28. > :53:34.is coming in at the front. I'm sure the likes of Cheptegei will have

:53:35. > :53:39.been here and trained over and over on this course and worked out their

:53:40. > :53:43.best strategy. The Kenyans are very famous for working on their best

:53:44. > :53:51.strategy, but the Ugandans have worked hard and planned this. I'm

:53:52. > :53:57.getting worried for him. He has got to use these black markers if he's

:53:58. > :54:01.going to win this race because Kamworor is charging now and the

:54:02. > :54:06.crowd are celebrating, we have almost been celebrating on his

:54:07. > :54:10.behalf but he looks very tired. The knee lift has gone, the stride

:54:11. > :54:18.length has shortened, is anxiously looking behind because Kamworor is

:54:19. > :54:25.on the charge here. He's nearly tripping up. This could end really

:54:26. > :54:30.sadly for Cheptegei, who has led this race, I said he ripped the

:54:31. > :54:38.heart out of it, but has he in so doing destroyed his own chances?

:54:39. > :54:43.Kamworor, the defending champion, is reinvigorated, only to microseconds

:54:44. > :54:50.behind. It's like he's running through quicksand. That is a big

:54:51. > :54:57.whack in the stomach as Kamworor runs past him. It must be breaking

:54:58. > :55:01.the heart of Cheptegei, who needs to keep going for the silver medal

:55:02. > :55:05.because it will be under threat from the athletes behind. It was so hard,

:55:06. > :55:09.to go so hard in the middle of the race you have got to be confident

:55:10. > :55:16.about maintaining that, and although Kamworor did his best to go with

:55:17. > :55:20.him, he couldn't. Sometimes when you let the guide go and the guy keeps

:55:21. > :55:24.pushing on, you can maintain your pace better, then suddenly you

:55:25. > :55:33.realise the guy in front... I don't think Kamworor has picked it up that

:55:34. > :55:37.much, I think Cheptegei has fallen apart. They were cheering and

:55:38. > :55:42.dancing, handing him the gold medal because he looked so good, then

:55:43. > :55:47.there was a hill at third of the way into the last lap and suddenly there

:55:48. > :55:52.was nothing left. Suddenly the energy and his confidence had gone,

:55:53. > :56:02.and with it the chance of a world title, the chance of joining his

:56:03. > :56:06.team-mate as a world champion. But Cheptegei is in real trouble. It is

:56:07. > :56:15.so sad to see, I hope he's OK. So Geoffrey Kamworor defends his title.

:56:16. > :56:19.He kept going, plugging away, and he is rewarded with another world title

:56:20. > :56:26.to add to the world half marathon title he won this year and this

:56:27. > :56:37.world title he won two years ago. Gold medal for Kenya. Then there's

:56:38. > :56:52.lots of changes behind in terms of the positions. Joshua Cheptegei ran

:56:53. > :56:57.himself into the ground trying to win the medal for his country and

:56:58. > :57:04.team in front of his home crowd. What an effort for him and he will

:57:05. > :57:09.make it to the finish line. So confirmation of the senior men's

:57:10. > :57:24.result, Geoffrey Kamworor taking the title ahead of his team-mate

:57:25. > :57:32.Barsoton, and a surprise bronze medal for Hadis. I can report that

:57:33. > :57:38.Joshua Cheptegei finished in 30th place, very tired indeed.

:57:39. > :57:42.Despite the disappointment for the home crowd at the end, Kampala gave

:57:43. > :57:47.this edition of the world cross-country championship plenty to

:57:48. > :57:52.remember. Victor is for some big names, but perhaps the emergence of

:57:53. > :58:04.new stars in junior races including the exciting Jacob Kiplimo. The

:58:05. > :58:09.mixed railway was an exciting new addition, and we have a lot to look

:58:10. > :58:16.forward to in 2017. -- the mixed relay.

:58:17. > :58:23.One of the greatest races in history! He's going to get there! Of

:58:24. > :58:28.the Manchester run under way.
