0:00:08 > 0:00:11Colin Jackson has won his first gold medal, he is the champion of the

0:00:11 > 0:00:18world. Athletics supporters are looking on not just in admiration

0:00:18 > 0:00:22but in awe.

0:00:29 > 0:00:30He's the world champion!

0:00:38 > 0:00:51Welcome to a very wintry Birmingham. But it's my Birmingham, home to the

0:00:51 > 0:00:59Villa, the Blues, the Bears, and the balti. We have 56, does of water,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02the most Michelin-starred restaurants outside of London and in

0:01:02 > 0:01:08four years' time we will host the Commonwealth Games. Birmingham is

0:01:08 > 0:01:13also home of British athletics and we have produced a few decent names

0:01:13 > 0:01:18down the years. Denise Lewis is the Olympic

0:01:18 > 0:01:23champion. Now the world's best have come to

0:01:23 > 0:01:35our patch. Four days, 26 gold medals, come on, let's do this.

0:01:39 > 0:01:45Nice one, Denise, and she will tell us where to find the best balti

0:01:45 > 0:01:48later, no doubt. Birmingham like the rest of the country is freezing now,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51you could say it's perfect weather for indoor athletics, and in London

0:01:51 > 0:01:56last summer Britain proves once again just how good it is at staging

0:01:56 > 0:02:01global sporting events after the success of the outdoor World

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Championships the 2018 World Indoor Championships comes the second city,

0:02:04 > 0:02:09four days, six sessions all live on the BBC, and tonight we kick off

0:02:09 > 0:02:13with three gold medals up for grabs, we will see the men's and women's

0:02:13 > 0:02:17high jump, and the women's 3000 metres as Laura Muir challenges for

0:02:17 > 0:02:24a world medal once more.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28a world medal once more. Welcome to Birmingham. We are glad you are in

0:02:28 > 0:02:31doors, warm, snuggled up, because we are going to be with you all weekend

0:02:31 > 0:02:35and you don't want to go anywhere else, we have top-class action for

0:02:35 > 0:02:39you and a truly global field of talent to unveil over the next few

0:02:39 > 0:02:44days and those medals, by the way, were made and designed by local

0:02:44 > 0:02:48student in a competition and used some of the iconic buildings of

0:02:48 > 0:02:52Birmingham in her designs. Denise Lewis knows them only too well,

0:02:52 > 0:02:56Michael Johnson and Paula Radcliffe also alongside. Good to have you all

0:02:56 > 0:03:00back together again. Thank you, Michael, for bringing in the

0:03:00 > 0:03:04weather. Is the beast from the East and you are the best from the West.

0:03:04 > 0:03:10Well done. Well done.Denise, this is your city, you were born in West

0:03:10 > 0:03:14Bromwich and raised in Wolverhampton but Birmingham is where you learned

0:03:14 > 0:03:18your trade-in athletics.Absolutely, weren't learned to become an athlete

0:03:18 > 0:03:24and learned what athletics is about. I'm a life member of the Harriers,

0:03:24 > 0:03:29the best club in the Midlands, if I can say that, but the city means the

0:03:29 > 0:03:36world to me. I've watched its development and it's fantastic to

0:03:36 > 0:03:39have these Championships in Birmingham again.Michael, I know

0:03:39 > 0:03:42that you didn't run that much in doors yourself, it wasn't a huge

0:03:42 > 0:03:52part of your character. -- calendar. How important is it for 2018 which

0:03:52 > 0:03:54has the world record-holder Christian Coleman.It is important,

0:03:54 > 0:03:58the US wants to continue dominance, after the fantastic World

0:03:58 > 0:04:03Championships in London last year. This is a unique team made up of

0:04:03 > 0:04:05young up-and-coming talent like Christian Coleman but on the other

0:04:05 > 0:04:12end of the spectrum you have old athletes like Mike Rodgers, who was

0:04:12 > 0:04:16here in 2010 and trying to hang on and spent time going for the outdoor

0:04:16 > 0:04:23team. Those sort of athletes who made Dummett try to make the outdoor

0:04:23 > 0:04:30teams see it as a chance of getting a medal.What was it like?After I

0:04:30 > 0:04:33broke the world record, I thought, why continue?

0:04:33 > 0:04:40CHUCKLES Paula, you didn't run much in doors

0:04:40 > 0:04:43focusing on cross-country. The lady that we will have our eyes on later,

0:04:43 > 0:04:48the woman you will be all over, Laura Muir, has run cross country

0:04:48 > 0:04:52this season as well as indoors we know she hangs sacrificing

0:04:52 > 0:04:57Commonwealth Games because of her studies -- she is sacrificing.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01Denied is an important year in her calendar.Important and very tough,

0:05:01 > 0:05:05she had to fight to get here, eight hours in the car yesterday fighting

0:05:05 > 0:05:09their way down from Scotland and because of her better replacement

0:05:09 > 0:05:14she cannot go to the Commonwealth Games show she is doing 6000 metres

0:05:14 > 0:05:19denied and 3000 metres later. It is a tough ask, there are six serious

0:05:19 > 0:05:23medal contenders and another three or four who fancy their chances to

0:05:23 > 0:05:27get a medal so it's going to be a tough race.She was double European

0:05:27 > 0:05:32champion last year in Belgrade. She knows how to do it on the bigger

0:05:32 > 0:05:36stages in doors, she is out there getting a bit of physio ahead of her

0:05:36 > 0:05:41warm up later. Paula, in the athletes who run middle distances,

0:05:41 > 0:05:43and longer distances, would normally go outside to do some running before

0:05:43 > 0:05:49coming indoors. It's not particularly safe underfoot this

0:05:49 > 0:05:52evening, very icy, incredibly cold, Birmingham has not had as much snow

0:05:52 > 0:05:55but it's one of the coldest places in the country now. Will those

0:05:55 > 0:05:59athletes be able to do what they normally do outside? They will warm

0:05:59 > 0:06:05up inside tonight but the shake-out is this morning that they would have

0:06:05 > 0:06:09done it was funny watching because I watched Konstanze Klosterhalfen,

0:06:09 > 0:06:14from Germany, she chanced it outside, and I saw someone else on

0:06:14 > 0:06:18the treadmill, they have been mixing it up, some will have used a

0:06:18 > 0:06:21treadmill and some will not have done the shake-out at all and come

0:06:21 > 0:06:26in and erased, that is what I did. You didn't go out earlier. There is

0:06:26 > 0:06:30no point shaking out, you need energy later. We are on the

0:06:30 > 0:06:33precipice of a new era, after the World Championships we said goodbye

0:06:33 > 0:06:37to some big names, Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, and we have seen British

0:06:37 > 0:06:41athletics over the last few years say goodbye to the likes of Jessica

0:06:41 > 0:06:43Ennis-Hill so we asked you to have a

0:06:43 > 0:06:43say goodbye to the likes of Jessica Ennis-Hill so we asked you to have a

0:06:43 > 0:06:46look at the field this weekend and point out some names for us, and all

0:06:46 > 0:06:50of our commentators and pundits, to have a look at some names that not

0:06:50 > 0:06:54necessarily will be winning here but names we may see a lot more of in

0:06:54 > 0:07:01recent, coming years. Tellers about your choice, Michael.He is a

0:07:01 > 0:07:08fantastic athlete, my coaches have been working with him, Bingtian Su,

0:07:08 > 0:07:11he has a unique ability, very good at the start because of the amount

0:07:11 > 0:07:15of power you can display to win in the angular position coming out. His

0:07:15 > 0:07:19problem is once he gets into his running he cannot continue the same

0:07:19 > 0:07:25power so he is not a great as 100 metres, but he's great at 60-metre

0:07:25 > 0:07:28indoor running so this is a fantastic opportunity, he has the

0:07:28 > 0:07:32second-fastest time coming into the championship behind Christian

0:07:32 > 0:07:36Coleman.From Great Britain Richard Kilty, a former world champion at 60

0:07:36 > 0:07:40metres, but never transferred that global success in the longer 100

0:07:40 > 0:07:44metres. There are certain events that suit athletes more indoors and

0:07:44 > 0:07:49they never can translate outdoors and over the 60 metres Bingtian Su

0:07:49 > 0:07:53is a great example. He is, you will see 60-metre hurdlers who can be

0:07:53 > 0:07:58fantastic at the start. The 100 metres, you do not think

0:07:58 > 0:07:59fantastic at the start. The 100 metres, you do not think of it as

0:07:59 > 0:08:02endurance but it is about sustaining speed and he has a problem and some

0:08:02 > 0:08:05of the other athletes have a problem doing that and when they are

0:08:05 > 0:08:09fantastic starters they can take advantage of it indoors.Paula, tell

0:08:09 > 0:08:18us about your choice.Adam Kszczot. He is already well-known.He has won

0:08:18 > 0:08:23indoors before but it's the step up he has made this year. He is more at

0:08:23 > 0:08:27home racing indoors, he is a class apart, unbeaten coming into this,

0:08:27 > 0:08:31became a father at the end of last year so maybe that has going relaxed

0:08:31 > 0:08:35and running happy but I think he will be tough to be here.He is a

0:08:35 > 0:08:40master tactician. The Polish athletes tend to be good at racing

0:08:40 > 0:08:42indoors but it's indicative of the weather here. I bumped into him this

0:08:42 > 0:08:46morning and he said it's too cold, if the Polish are saying it's cold

0:08:46 > 0:08:56it must be cold!Denise, you have gone Swiss.I have, I young lady who

0:08:56 > 0:09:00is the Swiss record-holder in the 100 and 200 metres but recently she

0:09:00 > 0:09:07has improved her 60 metres phenomenally, ran well, 7.03, and

0:09:07 > 0:09:11second on the world list going into these championships. We have seen

0:09:11 > 0:09:17her before in 2014 at the European Championships.In front of a home

0:09:17 > 0:09:24crowd.Inspired run, over the 100 and 200 but this year she has made

0:09:24 > 0:09:29the transition and it is a smoking 60 metres runner she has put

0:09:29 > 0:09:33together and if she can hold her form and home nerve in a very

0:09:33 > 0:09:36competitive 60 metres she could do well and we might see her later in

0:09:36 > 0:09:41the year in the European Championships.Thank you, guys.

0:09:41 > 0:09:46Let's look at the evening and how it pans out, just three events, the

0:09:46 > 0:09:49men's high jump and women's high jump competitions running

0:09:49 > 0:09:54simultaneously, of

0:09:58 > 0:10:01simultaneously, of course Esser Barshim and Robbie Grabarz. In the

0:10:01 > 0:10:04women's high jump the lady who is dominant in the field has won her

0:10:04 > 0:10:14last 37 competitions. And Morgan Lake. And Laura Muir and Eilish

0:10:14 > 0:10:18McColgan it, with current world champion indoors over 3000 metres

0:10:18 > 0:10:24Genzebe Dibaba. We have a good night on the first night. The height of

0:10:24 > 0:10:28competition, running at the moment with the men and women jumping at

0:10:28 > 0:10:32the same time, an unusual way to do it. Steve Backley can tell us how it

0:10:32 > 0:10:33is going.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36it. Steve Backley can tell us how it is going. COMMENTATOR: Good evening,

0:10:36 > 0:10:44here are the jumpers, the women's high jump jumping back-to-back.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49Authorised neutral athlete cleared to jump here. The defending champion

0:10:49 > 0:10:54Morgan Lake of the back of her season's best last weekend, so

0:10:54 > 0:10:59high-class, absolute top drawer as you'd expect. At a world indoors,

0:10:59 > 0:11:08unusual configuration. Medals on offer this evening, and here is a

0:11:08 > 0:11:17look back at a wobbly start for Morgan Lake. 1.84. She jumped 1.92

0:11:17 > 0:11:22last weekend as a season's best but put herself under pressure. She

0:11:22 > 0:11:28ended up way underneath the first one underneath the bar, over

0:11:28 > 0:11:33striding, so this was her second attempt and it was also a bit of a

0:11:33 > 0:11:41mess, so three jumps, just to remind you, 3000, you are out. Morgan Lake

0:11:41 > 0:11:44put herself under massive pressure with those two fouls at the opening

0:11:44 > 0:11:50night. All other athletes either clear passing. Morgan Lake was

0:11:50 > 0:11:59forced to take her third attempt at the opening height.

0:12:00 > 0:12:05the opening height. So, 1.84 to stay involved. It was a deliberate effort

0:12:05 > 0:12:12but a good one, and showing some real nerves of steel to control

0:12:12 > 0:12:16that. The shake of the head, she is not happy, it's not the start she

0:12:16 > 0:12:23would have wanted but she still involved. And so it would be a five

0:12:23 > 0:12:28centimetre increase to the second height of 1.89, still within what we

0:12:28 > 0:12:33know she is capable of in her recent form. Her first attempt was a much

0:12:33 > 0:12:37better one. Daylight between her and the bar and that's just what she

0:12:37 > 0:12:42would have needed to settle the nerves. It is a nervy start, I can

0:12:42 > 0:12:45only put it down to that. That's exactly what she would have wanted

0:12:45 > 0:12:53at the second height. So, relaxing between jumps. The nerves hopefully

0:12:53 > 0:13:00have been settled. 1.89 first-time clearance for Morgan Lake. And as

0:13:00 > 0:13:06you can see those two high jump competitions starting simultaneously

0:13:06 > 0:13:13at the top of the screen. The main man from Qatar, the champion from

0:13:13 > 0:13:162017. Erik Kynard, the man who shared a rostrum with the last

0:13:16 > 0:13:21athlete to jump, Robbie Grabarz on the 2012 rostrum. Lots has happened

0:13:21 > 0:13:29since. But it was also a bit of a wobbly start for a Robbie Grabarz

0:13:29 > 0:13:38because he carried a foul also at his opening height of 2.20.

0:13:38 > 0:13:44And that put him in exactly the same position as Morgan Lake found

0:13:44 > 0:13:52herself in at those opening heights. He trains in Birmingham, he is a

0:13:52 > 0:13:56local lad, loss of expectation and he has friends in the audience. So,

0:13:56 > 0:14:03opening height, pressure on.

0:14:03 > 0:14:17And he rose to the occasion as you would expect. And hoped, at least.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28A wobbly start for the British high jumpers there. We talked about the

0:14:28 > 0:14:32difference for certain events and how different it feels indoors. It's

0:14:32 > 0:14:36more compact tanned it's two laps for 400 metres. There by definition

0:14:36 > 0:14:43the infield is a lot smaller. I said to you before, didn't I, it looks a

0:14:43 > 0:14:48bit odd, as if they are running up the lanes to the high jump. It

0:14:48 > 0:14:52seemed like Morgan Lake hadn't quite worked out where she was running for

0:14:52 > 0:14:59those first two?I think it was very unsettling. We don't see the two

0:14:59 > 0:15:03high jump beds facing each other most. Women are facing where the men

0:15:03 > 0:15:07are jumping, the men facing the women. That is unusual. They are

0:15:07 > 0:15:12simultaneously side by side. I just think both of them really were

0:15:12 > 0:15:16unsettled and nervous. Sometimes the opening height is within your

0:15:16 > 0:15:23capabilities there is an airport of complacency. I don't think they were

0:15:23 > 0:15:27attacking their run up enough. Thankfully they live to fight for

0:15:27 > 0:15:34the next height.Let us hope they stay in a lot lunger. Laura Muir

0:15:34 > 0:15:40will take to the track for the 3,000 metre, not going to the Commonwealth

0:15:40 > 0:15:48Games, she has exams in May. She sacrificed that. These Championships

0:15:48 > 0:15:57are important in her calendar year. She is balancing it all with her

0:15:57 > 0:16:04studies, and found time toll chat to our reporter.

0:16:06 > 0:16:11COMMENTATOR:A historic double at the European Indoor Championships.

0:16:11 > 0:16:16Two Gold medals, the Champion again, another record.Double gold in the

0:16:16 > 0:16:22Open Indoors, brilliant for me. It gave me big confidence boost. To set

0:16:22 > 0:16:26two Championship records and a British record at the same time that

0:16:26 > 0:16:34was the boost I needed to know I can come away with these medals.

0:16:34 > 0:16:40COMMENTATOR:It will be the Olympic champion.

0:16:44 > 0:16:49Laura Muir was so close and when you have the medal snatched away from

0:16:49 > 0:16:55you in the latter stages, it's gut wrenching.Having a home World

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Championships in that stadium was amazing. Attapatu moss fear is

0:16:58 > 0:17:04brilliant. I got to both finals of 1500 and the 5K and gave it

0:17:04 > 0:17:08everything I could. I'm proud of how I ran. It was just one of those

0:17:08 > 0:17:13things. I went from being second to fourth in the 1500. It was hard.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16Just being so, so close. It was a great experience. I learnt a lot. At

0:17:16 > 0:17:20the same time just missing out on that medal. I hope to rectify that

0:17:20 > 0:17:26here.You will be competitive, what does that mean is a medal you are

0:17:26 > 0:17:31targeting?I think so. It will be tough for the athletes who have

0:17:31 > 0:17:39confirmed. It will be a tough field. The currented world record holder

0:17:39 > 0:17:42the world indoor champion in 1500. It will be very tough. Dibaba's in

0:17:42 > 0:17:47good form. She will be a very big contend are for me. I think I can

0:17:47 > 0:17:52take her on.When you hit the front that is it. You are gone.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56Championship racing is different. It's tactical. Can there ever be a

0:17:56 > 0:18:00balance where you think - I'm in good enough shape, strong enough to

0:18:00 > 0:18:03take it from the front? There comes a point when you think you might be

0:18:03 > 0:18:07strong enough to take it on. Other times people can match on and use

0:18:07 > 0:18:11you. You do the work and they sit on you and you are the pacer

0:18:11 > 0:18:13effectively. It's difficult to judge it and how you can look at things.

0:18:13 > 0:18:18Closer to the time we will have a look at the race, decide who is

0:18:18 > 0:18:22running, who is likely and in what shape and what shape I'm in and how

0:18:22 > 0:18:29best to judge it.Is there like a baton being passed to you younger

0:18:29 > 0:18:33guys with Mo Farah stepping away. A unyoer generation coming through you

0:18:33 > 0:18:36are part of the figurehead of?Yeah. I think I was lucky I have competed

0:18:36 > 0:18:44on teams with the likes of K much Jess a few times. Having them

0:18:44 > 0:18:47inspires you a lot and gives you confidence knowing you are competing

0:18:47 > 0:18:51alongside the people in the team that are amazing athletes. Younger

0:18:51 > 0:18:57people on the team and hopefully I can give them pointersnd here and

0:18:57 > 0:19:01there and help them out if need be. It's big Championships, if I can be

0:19:01 > 0:19:04there to support them, that would be We talked about good. The fact she

0:19:04 > 0:19:08arrived late last night because of the weather and she was at a lecture

0:19:08 > 0:19:12yesterday morning for her veterinary studies. Doing incredibly well to

0:19:12 > 0:19:16balance and juggle the different demands in her life thus far. At the

0:19:16 > 0:19:21end of this academic year it will be athletics all the way. You can

0:19:21 > 0:19:24understand her having to sacrifice the Commonwealth Games?I completely

0:19:24 > 0:19:29understand. She wants to be a success in every area of her life.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Is her final chance. Her only chance at her studies. She wants to get it

0:19:32 > 0:19:37right. Wants to do it as well as she can there. Then she will be able to

0:19:37 > 0:19:41concentrate on-the-running which we hope will carry on for a good few

0:19:41 > 0:19:46years and be medal hopes. It won't have been easy to say no to

0:19:46 > 0:19:50competing for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games. Taking one day

0:19:50 > 0:19:57off her studies, today, no, tomorrow. Two-days off.Anything

0:19:57 > 0:20:00like my kids, probably your kids, all the schools seem to be shut

0:20:00 > 0:20:05tomorrow. I don't think her lectures will be on.She hiked in through the

0:20:05 > 0:20:09snow yesterday morning to that lecture before being able to leave

0:20:09 > 0:20:14and sit for eight hours fighting her way down. . She tweeted at 11.00pm

0:20:14 > 0:20:20when she arrived to the hotel huge thanks to the driver or they

0:20:20 > 0:20:23wouldn't have made it here. For some athletes it works to turn off the

0:20:23 > 0:20:28pressure of athletics almost and focus on something as benign as

0:20:28 > 0:20:32veterinary studies! It's a tough degree to be doing anyway. To go

0:20:32 > 0:20:36back to her sport and really enjoy it?I think it would work for this

0:20:36 > 0:20:42year. When you get back into World Championships and Olympic years, as

0:20:42 > 0:20:46she is getting closer to out door world level medals you have to...

0:20:46 > 0:20:50The sport takes everything that you have. You can't do both. I think

0:20:50 > 0:20:55this has to be... This is the last year she will be able to do that. .

0:20:55 > 0:20:59She has achieved incredible things already with all of that going on in

0:20:59 > 0:21:04her life. She's been fantastic double gold in Belgrade last year.

0:21:04 > 0:21:11Which set her up for the out doors as well. Dominated the field there?

0:21:11 > 0:21:15It's a totally different playing field for her tonight. The level of

0:21:15 > 0:21:22competition she is facing is clearly head and shoulders above that which

0:21:22 > 0:21:25she faced in Belgrade. She is maybe not quite in the shape she was there

0:21:25 > 0:21:28because she has been managing that and managing that energy really

0:21:28 > 0:21:33well. . Hasn't raced as well as she has done in the build-up, as well as

0:21:33 > 0:21:39she did in the bellup to #3we8 grade. Let us not heap too much on

0:21:39 > 0:21:46her. She will go out and give it her everything tonight. -- build-up.Let

0:21:46 > 0:21:59us join the High Jump competition. Is Robbie Grabarz took silver in the

0:21:59 > 0:22:04European indoors. Here at the world indoors he has to go clear to

0:22:04 > 0:22:05European indoors. Here at the world indoors he has to go clear to stay

0:22:05 > 0:22:13involved. The bar, second height of 2.25 centimetres. If you have just

0:22:13 > 0:22:17joined us, he did salvage a wobbly start with a clearance of 2.20. That

0:22:17 > 0:22:26was his opening height. He's in exactly the same position here. I

0:22:26 > 0:22:29will bring in Toni Minichiello, the coach is looking on. What can the

0:22:29 > 0:22:35coach do here or what should Robbie do here?I think it's how Robbie is

0:22:35 > 0:22:40running on-the-runway for me. His inside shoulder, right shoulder, he

0:22:40 > 0:22:43is straight. Ing up and going into the bar. That is taking the bar off.

0:22:43 > 0:22:49We saw the third attempt. He put the energy in.Robbie Grabarz, 2.25 to

0:22:49 > 0:22:58stay involved. Too much tonight. Well...Really slowed down. In doing

0:22:58 > 0:23:02that, typical of what a lot of high jumpers do, they slow down to work

0:23:02 > 0:23:06strong. As soon as you lose the speed you won't get in the air,

0:23:06 > 0:23:09unfortunately. A bit sad there really going out on that third

0:23:09 > 0:23:16attempt.

0:23:16 > 0:23:20attempt.Three fouls and Robbie Grabarz, one of a handful of hopes

0:23:20 > 0:23:25for medals here in Birmingham, is done. He will play no further part.

0:23:25 > 0:23:35Let us look at this, Toni. He's driving out strong. You can see it

0:23:35 > 0:23:39rock around a little bit. Not smooth in terms of that. I think that's the

0:23:39 > 0:23:43tough thing. For the first time at this championships you are seeing a

0:23:43 > 0:23:47straight final. There is a qualifying and you look at the

0:23:47 > 0:23:51runway and feel the floor and understand it better. A bit tough

0:23:51 > 0:23:56there.We know he had injuries this winter. He is a master of coming

0:23:56 > 0:24:00back and being short on preparation again we thought he would be able to

0:24:00 > 0:24:05handle it. Finding his groove, he wasn't able to do it on this

0:24:05 > 0:24:12occasion. His rhythm was out for me and never got settled. Unfortunately

0:24:12 > 0:24:18for Robbie, it's all over. Real class competition as well. He would

0:24:18 > 0:24:24have to be at his very best to stay involved and get into the medals

0:24:24 > 0:24:29here because of Mutaz Barshim. Here he is in fact. The Qatari world

0:24:29 > 0:24:38leader. Jumped 2.38 to take the title a couple of weeks ago.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42Suffered a rare defeat. Barshim, hugely capable when he gets it

0:24:42 > 0:24:50right. Champion last summer in London. He has jumped 2.40 on a

0:24:50 > 0:25:00number of occasions. Barshim. 2.29. Wow! He defies gravity. Incredible.

0:25:00 > 0:25:08Much smoother runway. Much smoother. Runs in. 2.29, to a man who jumped

0:25:08 > 0:25:13in the 2.40s, this is easy for him. Early days.He make it look so easy.

0:25:13 > 0:25:16What is he doing different? He floats in. He has pop. He can get

0:25:16 > 0:25:20off the ground. He can get in the air. He takes off a bit far away

0:25:20 > 0:25:25from the bar for me, but when he elevates he goes up.No pleasing

0:25:25 > 0:25:32some people, is there! Mutaz Essa Barshim has got pop. Erik Kynard, a

0:25:32 > 0:25:37man who enjoys a rostrum, silver-medallist from 2012.

0:25:37 > 0:25:4427-year-old American. No pop.He puts in a little stutter step about

0:25:44 > 0:25:50three steps away from the bar. Heel straightens up. That shortening,

0:25:50 > 0:25:54straightens up his body so he is upright. You need to lean as you

0:25:54 > 0:25:57come round. That gives you the rotational force and you convert

0:25:57 > 0:26:09that to lift at take-off.To the women's on the opposite side.

0:26:09 > 0:26:15Michaela Hruba getting ready for her third attempt here at 1.89 to stay

0:26:15 > 0:26:22involved.Not that time, not that time. She was under pressure. . Saw

0:26:22 > 0:26:29her stop her runway, go back and start again. This year there is a

0:26:29 > 0:26:34new rule, 30 seconds to start your attempt. Whether it affects the

0:26:34 > 0:26:38athletes, they know the clock is ticking this year quicker than it

0:26:38 > 0:26:45was previously. The height of 2.29. Only Barshim to go clear so far at

0:26:45 > 0:26:54this new height. Starting to sort out the athletes in form.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59out the athletes in form. We look across to the mirror image as we

0:26:59 > 0:27:03look down into the stadium. Iryna Gerashchenko of the Ukraine. 22ers

0:27:03 > 0:27:13ya of age. Wow, that's a... Not even close there. Athletes struggling.

0:27:13 > 0:27:17It's a slightly unusual orientation. We speculated about the view through

0:27:17 > 0:27:20to the other high jump mat and whether that might affect the

0:27:20 > 0:27:27ability to focus of what's in front of you. No excuses. It's the same

0:27:27 > 0:27:34for all.

0:27:35 > 0:27:41for all. We see Mateusz Przybylko get ready. The German champion,

0:27:41 > 0:27:48Przybylko. 25 years of age. Fifth in London last year. Took all three

0:27:48 > 0:27:57jumps at that previous height. 2.29 to join Barshim. No, not that time.

0:27:57 > 0:28:01He just doesn't run enough of a curve, goes down a little bit deep.

0:28:01 > 0:28:05Ends up being more like a corner than anything else for the German

0:28:05 > 0:28:15there. That's difficult. Levern Spencer in the Women's High Jump.We

0:28:15 > 0:28:20look forward to seeing her Down Under. Wow, really sloppy jumps

0:28:20 > 0:28:25here, Toni. I don't know what to make of it. The last successful jump

0:28:25 > 0:28:31was of Mutaz Barshim. We have seen six fouls since then. Spencer,

0:28:31 > 0:28:37highly fancied to challenge for the medals, 33 years of age. Jumped 1.95

0:28:37 > 0:28:47this year is out. Here's a man in the form of his life, Danil Lysenko.

0:28:47 > 0:28:52That's a lovely jump, isn't it? That's the pop I'm talking about.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55Puts his foot down quickly, comes off quickly and goes straight up in

0:28:55 > 0:29:00the air.

0:29:00 > 0:29:06the air.Silver-medallist to Barshim last year and highly fancied to push

0:29:06 > 0:29:12the Qatari athlete all the way. Lysenko looking really competent. We

0:29:12 > 0:29:16switch our attention back to McPherson of the United States. Oh,

0:29:16 > 0:29:22crikey. Not at all happy with those three fouls. Another athlete

0:29:22 > 0:29:33struggling. McPherson. 1.91 her season's best. Experienced athlete.

0:29:33 > 0:29:41So looks like the medals might go a little softer than we anticipated.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44Kynard to stay involved. A skip and correction there. We are seeing

0:29:44 > 0:29:49that. It needs to be smooth so the acceleration there can be used for

0:29:49 > 0:29:54the jumps. Smooth acceleration. When you put that skip in, it slows you

0:29:54 > 0:30:01down that little bit.Two fouls for Kynard, but he's still in third

0:30:01 > 0:30:10place, amazingly. Yorgelis Rodriguez also competing in the pentathlon. We

0:30:10 > 0:30:16hope to see Thompson there, it starts tomorrow morning. Busy few

0:30:16 > 0:30:22days for the Cuban 23-year-old.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26It has been difficult, out of 11 men that started the competition six

0:30:26 > 0:30:31have gone out and in the women's competition, I calculate six out of

0:30:31 > 0:30:3513 competitors have gone out. I think they are struggling with the

0:30:35 > 0:30:40floor, maybe. Maybe the floor is a bit soft and not giving them the

0:30:40 > 0:30:45return of energy that you would want. But, yeah...Sylwester

0:30:45 > 0:30:52Bednarek of Poland. No, another man who is capable. He's jumped 2.33

0:30:52 > 0:30:57this year. I don't know what to make of this, the bar is at 2.29 and he

0:30:57 > 0:31:03is left wanting. When you see somebody like Barshim, Lysenko

0:31:03 > 0:31:08popping over with daylight, there cannot be that much of a problem,

0:31:08 > 0:31:13can there? No, you are looking at two superbly confident and quality

0:31:13 > 0:31:16athletes who, regardless of the service or anything like that, they

0:31:16 > 0:31:22are always going to jump high -- regardless of the surface. One

0:31:22 > 0:31:29athlete still involved is Morgan Lake. Will look forward to seeing

0:31:29 > 0:31:33how her event progresses.

0:31:33 > 0:31:34Lake. Will look forward to seeing how her event progresses.

0:31:34 > 0:31:39STUDIO: Disappointing to see Robbie Grabarz go out so soon in this

0:31:39 > 0:31:45competition. Welcome, Colin Jackson, and happy St David's Day.Thank you.

0:31:45 > 0:31:49What is going on? It is not just Robbie, high-class high jumpers are

0:31:49 > 0:31:53struggling at the minute. It is not good out there by the looks of it, I

0:31:53 > 0:31:58don't know what is with the failures. I don't know. Sometimes

0:31:58 > 0:32:02athletes come to the championships and I'm not saying they are not best

0:32:02 > 0:32:04prepared but they haven't prepared specifically for this Championships,

0:32:04 > 0:32:09and it mats sound odd to say but lots of people do the World

0:32:09 > 0:32:13Championships with their focus still on the outdoors so they are in very

0:32:13 > 0:32:16heavy training, they might have tapered off a little bit so they are

0:32:16 > 0:32:23not very snappy. The high jumpers don't look like they have that zing,

0:32:23 > 0:32:29Tony Minichiello talked about the pop. They look lacklustre. Robbie

0:32:29 > 0:32:33the same and hopefully Morgan will improve. That's not Robbie, Robbie

0:32:33 > 0:32:38is usually so dynamic. I think he got one of the host spots, both him

0:32:38 > 0:32:42and Morgan had the host places here so they might not have been in the

0:32:42 > 0:32:47best shape coming into the Championships. We saw Morgan last

0:32:47 > 0:32:52week in Glasgow jump 1.92, and she got close to 1.95 and looks like she

0:32:52 > 0:32:58was clearing it at her final attempt and looked in decent shape. It is

0:32:58 > 0:33:02interesting coming to the major championships with what has happened

0:33:02 > 0:33:05in between and sometimes you can rest a bit too much, you have to get

0:33:05 > 0:33:09used to the surface again. Everything is very different than

0:33:09 > 0:33:15what they normally are used to. They are jumping against each other in

0:33:15 > 0:33:19that sense, at each other, it's interesting the whole dynamic for

0:33:19 > 0:33:24this high jump.It doesn't take much for the athlete's mind to get

0:33:24 > 0:33:28unsettled. I know these are the world's best but it doesn't take

0:33:28 > 0:33:32much for them to be out of sorts.

0:33:35 > 0:33:40Let's hope Morgan is back in sorts.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43Let's hope Morgan is back in sorts. At edge Morgan will look at this as

0:33:43 > 0:33:46an opportunity as we see the world indoor champion Vashti Cunningham,

0:33:46 > 0:33:53the youngest ever, make a

0:33:53 > 0:33:57the youngest ever, make a mess of... Sorry, that was 1.93, this is the

0:33:57 > 0:34:01new height as we see the fowl of Cunningham. There is an insight of

0:34:01 > 0:34:08an athlete who has jumped 1.97 this year.

0:34:10 > 0:34:14year. Randall Cunningham, quarterback, famous man on the right

0:34:14 > 0:34:21of the screen in the United States. So then, Morgan Lake. Three jumps at

0:34:21 > 0:34:24the opening height, a clean first-time clearance of 1.89, the

0:34:24 > 0:34:30new height 1.9 three, one centimetre higher than her best so far. Great

0:34:30 > 0:34:36Britain's Morgan Lake strides out first attempt at the new height. But

0:34:36 > 0:34:40nowhere near, Tony.Didn't start the run-up in the same way. Veolia

0:34:40 > 0:34:44heights she cleared she drove out the back and ran quickly out of the

0:34:44 > 0:34:50back and that sets up the speed. -- the early heights. Start your run-up

0:34:50 > 0:34:55and beat vigorous out of the run-up, that sets up the speed for me. If

0:34:55 > 0:34:59she clears this height the medals are up for grabs, if you clear the

0:34:59 > 0:35:04site with the way people are jumping she has every chance.Only one

0:35:04 > 0:35:08athlete clear so far at this height, foul at the first time of asking for

0:35:08 > 0:35:11Morgan Lake but no one else has gone clear so there is still an

0:35:11 > 0:35:15opportunity here at this height to get amongst the medals. We probably

0:35:15 > 0:35:19wouldn't have speculated that would be the case but here we are, and

0:35:19 > 0:35:22Morgan Lake as you say, Tony, completely agree, there is an

0:35:22 > 0:35:31opportunity. Maria Lasitskene, the undisputed world leader, dominant,

0:35:31 > 0:35:36seven centimetres higher than anyone, 2.04 is how good she is.

0:35:36 > 0:35:43That's interesting, 1.93, she gave it a wobble. She did but did you see

0:35:43 > 0:35:47how she attacked it? She runs at the bar and develops the speed and uses

0:35:47 > 0:35:50it and she can convert that into a lift and that's the important thing,

0:35:50 > 0:35:53you don't want to slow down going into the bar because that's

0:35:53 > 0:36:03difficult.From one world champion to another. From Lasitskene to

0:36:03 > 0:36:11Barshim. Very impressive at the previous height of 2.29. 2.33 also

0:36:11 > 0:36:17well within the height we knew he was capable of. He's jumped 2.38

0:36:17 > 0:36:26this year. He's certainly living up to his billing.I think so. There is

0:36:26 > 0:36:30three big men in this competition who could challenge for the medals

0:36:30 > 0:36:36here, Barshim being one, Lysenko being the other and Cunard, for me,

0:36:36 > 0:36:45I think, and here he is. -- Erik Kynard.Erik Kynard successful at

0:36:45 > 0:36:54the third attempt of 2.29. And in fourth place, new high of 2.33. Same

0:36:54 > 0:37:02skip.That is in there, isn't it? That his rhythm and his run-up and

0:37:02 > 0:37:06that's not going to change but I think that's changing his position.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09You've got to stay away from it, Lee Nguyen, the short step puts his

0:37:09 > 0:37:13shoulders on top of his feet meaning he is upright which will always take

0:37:13 > 0:37:18him into the bar. At that point the only thing you can do is you have to

0:37:18 > 0:37:21work the vertical very hard. The inside leg closest to the high jump

0:37:21 > 0:37:28bar, you got to work it and get it high in the air.So it looks as

0:37:28 > 0:37:35though it's going exactly as was forecast in the men's version, at

0:37:35 > 0:37:40least. Lysenko, this man is looking as though he's going to make it a

0:37:40 > 0:37:49two horse race with Barshim of Qatar. Cleared to complete, compete

0:37:49 > 0:37:54here, as a handful of Russians are able to compete here at the World

0:37:54 > 0:37:59Indoor Championships. Lysenko has a clean sheet so far. Can he continue

0:37:59 > 0:38:04it? Yes, he can, with a useful sort my word, he jumps straight into the

0:38:04 > 0:38:08air, he is a little front on if you want to be picky on it but look at

0:38:08 > 0:38:13the height he gets. This is going to be an interesting competition, the

0:38:13 > 0:38:19next couple of heights between those two.So, perfect sheet so far for

0:38:19 > 0:38:32Danil Lysenko. Vashti Cunningham. One foul so far at this height of

0:38:32 > 0:38:391.93 metres. Maria Lasitskene has gone clear, the only athlete to have

0:38:39 > 0:38:47done so. Cahalane, 1.93.That's nice. A very nice. -- Cunningham.

0:38:47 > 0:38:57Not quite the perfect card there, but runs in well, and again UCC runs

0:38:57 > 0:39:00in, little two step rhythm into it but it's great jumping at these

0:39:00 > 0:39:08heights. -- you see she runs in.She is the world indoor champion from

0:39:08 > 0:39:16two years ago, very experienced, same age as Morgan Lake. So then,

0:39:16 > 0:39:23Morgan Lake.

0:39:27 > 0:39:34Lake looking to find a rhythm. Fouled at the first chance to clear

0:39:34 > 0:39:41this new height of 1.93. Two athletes, Lasitskene on the first

0:39:41 > 0:39:45time of asking and Cunningham we have seen just go clear. All eyes

0:39:45 > 0:39:52turn to Morgan Lake. Can she join those two athletes? You would have

0:39:52 > 0:39:56to say that this is a chance of a medal, outside chance. The way

0:39:56 > 0:40:02people are jumping, I think jumping this now, season's best, she's going

0:40:02 > 0:40:06through the ritual, thinking she needs to be shoulder high on the

0:40:06 > 0:40:14inside. She knows they follow card closely.Morgan Lake then, 1.93, I

0:40:14 > 0:40:19is up at the bar, strides out, aggressive, she accelerated this

0:40:19 > 0:40:23time and it's good! Grey clearance from Morgan Lake, only the third

0:40:23 > 0:40:28athlete to have gone clear at the second time of asking. Brilliant

0:40:28 > 0:40:34competitive effort.That's brilliant. Very positive at the

0:40:34 > 0:40:40start of the run-up, set up the speed and maintained it more.

0:40:40 > 0:40:46Excellent. She leans away, something she seldom does, and goes up. If she

0:40:46 > 0:40:51has a fault it is that she doesn't lean enough really. Speed and lean

0:40:51 > 0:40:55away from the bar. Well done, that could be a medal winning jump. She

0:40:55 > 0:41:00almost needed those three wobbly starting jumps to settle her nerves.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03That is a much more competent clearance for Great Britain's Morgan

0:41:03 > 0:41:08Lake. It is early to start talking medals but at the moment she is in

0:41:08 > 0:41:14third place. 1.93 at the second time of asking, season's best.

0:41:14 > 0:41:15third place. 1.93 at the second time of asking, season's best. Great

0:41:15 > 0:41:19stuff. STUDIO: She is very happy with that. This is the heptathlete

0:41:19 > 0:41:23focusing on high jump for the last season and a half and really putting

0:41:23 > 0:41:28her efforts into this and it is starting to bear fruit. You can see

0:41:28 > 0:41:31the way she mentally shifted herself in the competition with the wobbly

0:41:31 > 0:41:35stats. In the past she would have let that get to her but she turned

0:41:35 > 0:41:38things round.She turned things round very well indeed. What I'd

0:41:38 > 0:41:42like to see from her is not starting with her long tights on because I

0:41:42 > 0:41:46think she uses that as a sort of, OK, I'm still going through the

0:41:46 > 0:41:50motions as opposed to saying, I am here to do business and there is a

0:41:50 > 0:41:57realistic chance of a

0:41:57 > 0:41:59realistic chance of a medal for me if I get my clearances in early. And

0:41:59 > 0:42:02then you see when she has those wobbles then she takes off her

0:42:02 > 0:42:05tights. I think mentally she needs to just get in there very early on

0:42:05 > 0:42:10from the get go. Establish the run-up, it says to her she needs to

0:42:10 > 0:42:13increase her speed because athletes strip off kit and get ready for

0:42:13 > 0:42:18business but she leaves her tights on. It's a small thing but it's a

0:42:18 > 0:42:21fundamental thing.You are shaking your head in agreement, Michael.I

0:42:21 > 0:42:24didn't notice until you mentioned that but there is a mindset and you

0:42:24 > 0:42:28have to go into this, remembering with this particular championship

0:42:28 > 0:42:31the high jumpers didn't have a preliminary round so getting used to

0:42:31 > 0:42:35the chat, getting used to the new setup, they didn't have the

0:42:35 > 0:42:38opportunity to do it. You don't want to carry the same mindset from your

0:42:38 > 0:42:42warm up into competition, and there are some small things that you might

0:42:42 > 0:42:45not think will be so significant and that will affect your mindset, and

0:42:45 > 0:42:51that could very well be one of them. And quickly, the same thing on the

0:42:51 > 0:42:55mindset, the way she is Bridget when she qualified, it wasn't excitement,

0:42:55 > 0:42:59it is, right, I'm back in the game and that is a positive mindset to be

0:42:59 > 0:43:06in. Not celebrating early, she is there.Let's get back outside

0:43:06 > 0:43:10because that was obviously positive news in terms of a medal for Morgan

0:43:10 > 0:43:11Lake. Steve.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13news in terms of a medal for Morgan Lake. Steve. COMMENTATOR: As will a

0:43:13 > 0:43:22catalyst trust of Italy, a chance to equal Morgan Lake, and does. She is

0:43:22 > 0:43:29delighted with that. And so she should be. That puts her equal with

0:43:29 > 0:43:35the Brit with a second time clearance of 1.93. Let's have a look

0:43:35 > 0:43:43at this. That's just effort. You see people, you know how much it means

0:43:43 > 0:43:47to them, they know how much they need to do and UCF it, somebody

0:43:47 > 0:43:51raises their game, full force on the floor, drive in and get up in the

0:43:51 > 0:43:57air. That is a good competitive jump and what you want to be seeing. --

0:43:57 > 0:44:04and you see it.Here is a very capable high jumper, Yuliya

0:44:04 > 0:44:12Levchenko, second on the world lists with 1.97. Silver-medallist last

0:44:12 > 0:44:21summer. Seven, Lepchenko, off a foul on the second attempt. No!She got

0:44:21 > 0:44:29that completely wrong. That's pressure. I think that's pressure.

0:44:29 > 0:44:33You are in fifth, you have won medals at the World Outdoor

0:44:33 > 0:44:35Championships and you know you are somebody who should be in the top

0:44:35 > 0:44:40three, its pressure.Pressure for Erik Kynard of the United States,

0:44:40 > 0:44:48two fouls, 2.33, can he handle the pressure? No, that's a surprise.He

0:44:48 > 0:44:51finishes in fourth place. He's ripped his number off and he knows

0:44:51 > 0:44:56he has not done himself justice today in this competition. He is

0:44:56 > 0:45:02outside, he is in fourth, little shrug to his coach and he will be

0:45:02 > 0:45:05disappointed with that. It is tough for the Americans, they had their

0:45:05 > 0:45:08trials two weeks ago in Albuquerque and then they have to fly to

0:45:08 > 0:45:12Britain, you've got jet lag to deal with and the American trial system,

0:45:12 > 0:45:17the first three across the line, is a tough competition so you have a

0:45:17 > 0:45:20tough competition two weeks ago and then to come here and raise your

0:45:20 > 0:45:27game further is a difficult mindset to deliver, I think.

0:45:27 > 0:45:33It's all about mind-set when you come to a championships that is what

0:45:33 > 0:45:36many athletes love about the competition that a championship

0:45:36 > 0:45:40brings. A difficult mentality to competing on the circuit, as it

0:45:40 > 0:45:47were. Back to the women's side of this arena here in Birmingham.

0:45:47 > 0:45:52Demireva carries two fouls. Surprised she hasn't passed here and

0:45:52 > 0:45:55maybe looked at the next height. She's in sixth place. The only

0:45:55 > 0:45:59athlete at this height who is carrying two fouls. You could argue

0:45:59 > 0:46:04she may could have had a look at the next height. Probably won't get her

0:46:04 > 0:46:09into the medals. Won't at this height. She will have to clear a

0:46:09 > 0:46:18high height anyway. Anyway, it's all the strategic game of high jumping.

0:46:18 > 0:46:23Mirela Demireva of Bulgaria. Two fouls, 1.93.Just got too close to

0:46:23 > 0:46:28that, leaned in and took it off on the way up on her jump. It was tough

0:46:28 > 0:46:31for her. That would have been a season's best. She hasn't jumped

0:46:31 > 0:46:35that high this year. That is why she didn't pass because the next height

0:46:35 > 0:46:43up would have been too big an ask for her.

0:46:43 > 0:46:46for her.Przybylko getting ready for his 2.33. Last chance to stay

0:46:46 > 0:46:51involved.

0:46:52 > 0:46:54involved.He's happy with his bronze medal.

0:46:54 > 0:47:02He knows he has a bronze. He's happy there. Looking at the card was he

0:47:02 > 0:47:07likely

0:47:08 > 0:47:16likely to beat Barshim and Lysenko. That was Morgan Lake getting ready.

0:47:16 > 0:47:21Danil Lysenko.

0:47:22 > 0:47:30Danil Lysenko. Levchenko watching on. They are alternating side to

0:47:30 > 0:47:35side, allowing the alternate mat to take the precedent and have the

0:47:35 > 0:47:37freedom of jump. You don't want to be running at

0:47:37 > 0:47:41someone jumping, that is a unique experience. The judges are timing it

0:47:41 > 0:47:47from your point of view. When you are high jumping you are looking at

0:47:47 > 0:47:54the grass field behind. Are you not throwing any more, so probably not.

0:47:54 > 0:48:03Levchenko, third attempt. Levchenko's out.She's in fifth

0:48:03 > 0:48:09place. Four athletes remain, Great Britain's Morgan Lake is one of

0:48:09 > 0:48:18them.

0:48:18 > 0:48:21them. Mutaz Essa Barshim 2.36. Love the way he eyes it up from that

0:48:21 > 0:48:29right hand side. Oh, surprise there. Deaccelerated. As you slow down into

0:48:29 > 0:48:33the bar and use that speed to convert to go up. By slowing down,

0:48:33 > 0:48:39he's not converted enough of the speed and he's dropped on the bar.

0:48:39 > 0:48:42Basically, he's stalled.Why would you slow down?You are thinking.

0:48:42 > 0:48:47Slowing down. Maybe a little bit too close, a little bit too far away.

0:48:47 > 0:48:53Here we go. Lysenko. This is like gun slingers, the first man to

0:48:53 > 0:48:59blink. Barshim has blinked. Let's see how he gets on here. That's as

0:48:59 > 0:49:03close as he gets to a clearance without it being one. Must have just

0:49:03 > 0:49:11given that the slightest of rattles. It's a foul.At that point he is

0:49:11 > 0:49:17saying - tuck your vest in.Look at this. His socks too thick.Something

0:49:17 > 0:49:22like that! They are on exactly the same record. They are both going to

0:49:22 > 0:49:27be tied for that first place.So then, cat-and-mouse on the men's

0:49:27 > 0:49:36side. Lysenko authorised neutral athlete and Barshim. On the women's

0:49:36 > 0:49:41side, Lake finds herself in fourth place. Total fouls remember. That's

0:49:41 > 0:49:48interesting Steve. It's the two fouls at 1.84.The opening height?

0:49:48 > 0:49:52That opening height that may cost her the medal in the end. That early

0:49:52 > 0:49:58failure. That runway really that she didn't quite get right. Didn't get

0:49:58 > 0:50:03the rhythm early. It may cost her. Get the rhythm early. Barshim

0:50:03 > 0:50:08looking to do exactly that. Rhythm on the approach. Massive height.

0:50:08 > 0:50:15Came down on that didn't he? He did. He knows that, you know, he blinked

0:50:15 > 0:50:19first and Lysenko blinked. He had a chance there. Again, just trying to

0:50:19 > 0:50:26muscle it off the ground a little bit, instead of using that wonderful

0:50:26 > 0:50:37flow he has.Mariya Lasitskene, 2 metres 4. 1.96 easily.She's in a

0:50:37 > 0:50:44competition of her own. Well better than anybody else. Been over two

0:50:44 > 0:50:50metres already this year. She's the class of the field. From one

0:50:50 > 0:50:53authorised neutral athlete to another, Lysenko. 2.36. He knows

0:50:53 > 0:50:59this is a chance to possibly take gold here because he's seen the only

0:50:59 > 0:51:02other athlete who can stop him, Barshim on two fouls, Lysenko on

0:51:02 > 0:51:09one. Second attempt. Not as good as the first, was it? Not as good as

0:51:09 > 0:51:15the first. He'll know, one more attempt or are we heading for a jump

0:51:15 > 0:51:20off?They have identical cards so far. It's not out of the question.

0:51:20 > 0:51:28Two fouls of this height of 2. 36 and a clean card up to this height.

0:51:28 > 0:51:33Lysenko and Barshim, neck and neck. One jump remaining. One jump

0:51:33 > 0:51:39separates the two. Who is your money on?I'd hate to see. I'm not a

0:51:39 > 0:51:44gambling man, I'm not a gambling man.Vashti Cunningham of the United

0:51:44 > 0:51:50States. A bit of pride, she's watching her title being taken here,

0:51:50 > 0:51:55unless she can do something about it. 1.96, first attempt. Too much.

0:51:55 > 0:52:02Again, slows down and stands up. Keep leaning. Lean away. Ride that

0:52:02 > 0:52:11bicycle round the corner, that kind of feel. If you rotate the floor you

0:52:11 > 0:52:15limit the height you can achieve. What you are trying to do is be in

0:52:15 > 0:52:19the strongest position you can. You put your feet directly underneath

0:52:19 > 0:52:23your shoulders. Instead of what you should be should do, put your feet

0:52:23 > 0:52:30out ahead of you.The coaches watching on. The coach is up close

0:52:30 > 0:52:38here, getting in the ears of their athletes. So, two athletes remain on

0:52:38 > 0:52:47the men's side. The first final. A roar from the man they call The

0:52:47 > 0:52:55Prince of Qatar. Mutaz Essa Barshim. How much do you want this World

0:52:55 > 0:53:04Indoor title, third and final jump, one more attempt. 2.36 for Barshim.

0:53:04 > 0:53:13Came down on that, again.Three fouls.He's not out.He has had

0:53:13 > 0:53:17three fouls so finished in those terms. If Lysenko goes clear, then

0:53:17 > 0:53:24Barshim cannot respond. If Lysenko knocks it off we have a jump off.

0:53:24 > 0:53:28Just rotating on the floor and backing in there. If he'd looked at

0:53:28 > 0:53:34his mind-set. The way the whole stadium went quiet for him as he

0:53:34 > 0:53:36mediated in that way and let out that roar and run. He gathered

0:53:36 > 0:53:49himself. A lot of effort.So then, Morgan Lake. Season's best already.

0:53:49 > 0:53:551.96, first attempt.

0:53:55 > 0:54:001.96, first attempt.Unlucky there. If I'm right in thinking that would

0:54:00 > 0:54:05have represented a personal best indoors and out doors. Again, 1.96

0:54:05 > 0:54:10an early look at it. Again, why not. She's got to step up as an athlete

0:54:10 > 0:54:17now, really. At the age she's at. She has been to major championships.

0:54:17 > 0:54:22She has to believe, it's my time, step up and compete. It's a perfect

0:54:22 > 0:54:28competition.She's done it time and time again. As we turn our attention

0:54:28 > 0:54:35back to the men's side. Danil Lysenko this jump to win the

0:54:35 > 0:54:42competition. Asks for a hush here. You could hear a pin drop, as I look

0:54:42 > 0:54:56around the stadium here. Two fouls. A battle with himself.

0:54:57 > 0:55:05Massive jump from Lysenko. That's a Gold medal jump. He looked as good

0:55:05 > 0:55:13as Barshim. He matched him and then, in the end, bettered him.He asked

0:55:13 > 0:55:18for hush. I've never seen that. The crowd, bless them, were incredibly

0:55:18 > 0:55:20quiet. You could hear his feet scraping.

0:55:20 > 0:55:27He composed himself. That's class. That is class. Look at that.Very

0:55:27 > 0:55:31competent jump. Do you know what, a bit of needle there, the man

0:55:31 > 0:55:37deprived of a Gold medal last summer to Mutaz Barshim. They have swapped

0:55:37 > 0:55:41places. Gold becomes silver, silver becomes gold. Lysenko has risen to

0:55:41 > 0:55:48the top.You may lose Bolt and athletes of that level, but we can

0:55:48 > 0:55:59see some rivalries. Barshim, Lysenko. We can see rivalries.

0:55:59 > 0:56:05Unfortunate they won't go head-to-head in major championships.

0:56:05 > 0:56:11Rivalries is the critical thing.20 years of age, Lysenko.Yeah, high

0:56:11 > 0:56:19jumps are young men and ladies game. They jump high at young ages and

0:56:19 > 0:56:29they keep jumping those heights.A foul there. 1. 1.# 6. -- 1.96. Too

0:56:29 > 0:56:32much for her. Morgan Lake still involved. The men's final is

0:56:32 > 0:56:41concluded. Only the women's yet to be decided.

0:56:41 > 0:56:45be decided. Mariya Lasitskene is out in front. The reigning champion is

0:56:45 > 0:56:49still involved, Vashti Cunningham, about to take her second attempt, so

0:56:49 > 0:56:55is Morgan Lake. Cunningham, second chance at 1.96. That's close.That's

0:56:55 > 0:57:02much better. Much better jumping there. Athletics is that mental

0:57:02 > 0:57:08game.

0:57:08 > 0:57:11game. Trust Trost will think she has a comfortable bronze. Morgan has to

0:57:11 > 0:57:17believe in herself and take it away from her. Why not, why not?Why not

0:57:17 > 0:57:23indeed. A great time to really come of age, two 20-year-olds battling it

0:57:23 > 0:57:27out. Morgan Lake. Well, whatever happens here, Morgan Lake has done

0:57:27 > 0:57:31better than her sixth place last year at the London Out door

0:57:31 > 0:57:38Championships. Guaranteed fourth or better. 1.96 this a medal potential

0:57:38 > 0:57:49jump. Second chance. Knocked it off on the way up.On those last two

0:57:49 > 0:57:53steps. Her inside shoulder on her left shoulder, tip it is towards the

0:57:53 > 0:57:59bar. When she jumps, she is jumping, just drifts in. You see how she

0:57:59 > 0:58:03rotates that shoulder away, the left shoulder. That takes her in towards

0:58:03 > 0:58:07the bar am you have to have the courage to stay away and then go

0:58:07 > 0:58:11vertical. Come on Morgan.Come on Morgan. It may be taken out of her

0:58:11 > 0:58:19hands because if Alessia Trost goes clear, it makes Morgan's task even

0:58:19 > 0:58:24more difficult. Trost carrying a foul in the first jump. We've seen

0:58:24 > 0:58:31Morgan foul twice at this height of 1.96.

0:58:33 > 0:58:411.96. Trost very capable, two metre jumper back in 2013, indoors. Fifth

0:58:41 > 0:58:50in Rio. Trost has a Championship pedigree. Of sorts at least. She has

0:58:50 > 0:58:58a Hans here to confirm her bronze medal. Second jump, 1.96.No. No.

0:58:58 > 0:59:04Really bad. Just leads in with that right arm. Just pushes it towards

0:59:04 > 0:59:07the bar and you should push it up into the air. Still in third. One

0:59:07 > 0:59:16more jump left.

0:59:16 > 0:59:21more jump left.Mariya Lasitskene in a class of her own. Morgan Lake in

0:59:21 > 0:59:25fourth place at the moment. Cunningham will get the first chance

0:59:25 > 0:59:31to go clear at the third time of asking. There's Khan, coach to

0:59:31 > 0:59:40Morgan lake. -- lake. Striding it out. Nod of approval, hopefully

0:59:40 > 0:59:43giving Morgan the confidence she needs. She needs to let go and trust

0:59:43 > 0:59:52this now. First up, Vashti Cunningham. Off two fouls. Third

0:59:52 > 0:59:54chance.

0:59:57 > 1:00:05Just came out of her arch early. Came out of her arch early. What you

1:00:05 > 1:00:10have to do is wait. You rotate around the bar like a bicycle wheel

1:00:10 > 1:00:15and then flick your legs out. Got the timing wrong.Technical stuff

1:00:15 > 1:00:20aside. An emotive jump for Morgan Lake. She has to not think about it

1:00:20 > 1:00:27and go for it. That is what I'm thinking. You are right. It's about

1:00:27 > 1:00:30adrenaline, motivation, power. You don't have to make it technical. Now

1:00:30 > 1:00:35is your time. A medal on offer. If you clear this, I'm not sure the

1:00:35 > 1:00:40Italian can beat you.I completely agree. A medal chance for Great

1:00:40 > 1:00:43Britain's Morgan Lake. Currently in fourth place off the back of a

1:00:43 > 1:00:48season's best at the previous height. She's moved the runup back.

1:00:48 > 1:00:52I saw her do it earlier. Moved it back a foot. Further away, giving

1:00:52 > 1:00:57herself more room. Physical she runs that speed and stays away...Morgan

1:00:57 > 1:01:03Lake, 1.96, third try. Over striding there. You could see that.It was

1:01:03 > 1:01:08that. You move the runner back to counter act what you are doing. It

1:01:08 > 1:01:12makes you open up and pushes the shoulder further ahead. Ah, that was

1:01:12 > 1:01:17such an opportunity there really to step into a medal. She will know.

1:01:17 > 1:01:22She will know. For me, she's been quite a nervous young lady. You see

1:01:22 > 1:01:27her jump really well when she smiles and relaxed and comfortable. You see

1:01:27 > 1:01:32her jump really well. Didn't quite see that today. It's the early

1:01:32 > 1:01:36failures, running underneath the bar in the first attempt at. Messing up

1:01:36 > 1:01:41the run at second time. That is what cost her.Big confidence boost for

1:01:41 > 1:01:45Morgan Lake. Fourth place, the most agonising place to finish at a

1:01:45 > 1:01:46championships.

1:01:51 > 1:01:57She is out, three falls at 1.96, fourth place here this evening. --

1:01:57 > 1:02:03three fouls. Crossed is guaranteed bronze, and can improve, but that's

1:02:03 > 1:02:13her third foul also -- Trost. The competition is over. The Italian

1:02:13 > 1:02:23will take bronze, Cunningham Silver, 1.96, three fouls. There is one

1:02:23 > 1:02:30athlete, this hugely dominant high jumper, Maria Lasitskene gets ready

1:02:30 > 1:02:36for 1.99. She hasn't had any fouls so far as we look back at Trost. She

1:02:36 > 1:02:39will be pleased with a medal. Definitely, she hasn't jumped

1:02:39 > 1:02:48anywhere near the two metres she has jumped career-wise. Is that jump

1:02:48 > 1:02:52necessary? Do I want to improve my bronze to a silver? You would hope

1:02:52 > 1:02:57so but she will be satisfied with that. Opportunity missed for Morgan.

1:02:57 > 1:03:02Now is her time at the age of 21, 22, that's when you start jumping at

1:03:02 > 1:03:06the top of your height and when you must cement the two-metre jump. You

1:03:06 > 1:03:13can jump 1.96 and 1.97 and win medals and championships. This is a

1:03:13 > 1:03:16young lady who has committed herself to high jump now, I think that's the

1:03:16 > 1:03:20sensible way forward for her, based at the National performance

1:03:20 > 1:03:23Institute at Loughborough, full-time coach, everything going for you.

1:03:23 > 1:03:32Unlucky. Maria Lasitskene, the world leader, 38 consecutive victories,

1:03:32 > 1:03:38would you believe? Her last defeat was in 2016 ahead of Ashley

1:03:38 > 1:03:44Cunningham. Morgan Lake in fourth place.Here is the men's result.

1:03:44 > 1:03:49It was a win for Danil Lysenko, silver-medallist last summer, and

1:03:49 > 1:03:52Barshim, surprise defeat command Robbie Grabarz, disappointed, I'm

1:03:52 > 1:03:58sure, with 2.20 in ninth place.

1:03:58 > 1:03:58Robbie Grabarz, disappointed, I'm sure, with 2.20 in ninth place. What

1:03:58 > 1:04:02will be overriding emotion be for Morgan Lake because that's an

1:04:02 > 1:04:06improvement on a global standing at a major competition compared to the

1:04:06 > 1:04:10Worlds in London, but frustration springs to mind because of the early

1:04:10 > 1:04:14mistakes.Absolutely frustration. She should be frustrated. What she

1:04:14 > 1:04:17has seen now she has moved completely too high jumper is that

1:04:17 > 1:04:22even when you are not at your best you can still come away with a medal

1:04:22 > 1:04:28in competitions like that providing you have the discipline in the early

1:04:28 > 1:04:34rounds, and, you know, she will be gutted because that bronze medal was

1:04:34 > 1:04:40so there. She looked better as the rounds went on and the Heights got

1:04:40 > 1:04:44higher. Very frustrating, I think, for her.In terms of the final

1:04:44 > 1:04:48height what were your thoughts on her approach and technique?I was

1:04:48 > 1:04:52thinking more of a positive spin on it for her because we know how

1:04:52 > 1:04:56talented she is and how she can deliver so to come to a major

1:04:56 > 1:05:00championships and deliver a season's best, only two high jumpers

1:05:00 > 1:05:04delivered a season's best, so I think he will be positive for her

1:05:04 > 1:05:09moving forward and I like the fact she improved, she moved her shoe out

1:05:09 > 1:05:14and became more aggressive to try and get the medal again.Lysenko

1:05:14 > 1:05:21already assured of the gold... Sorry, Lasitskene, the men's winner

1:05:21 > 1:05:29we saw earlier on. Lasitskene going for 2.01 and she has cleared that

1:05:29 > 1:05:32many times. She is an incredibly formidable high jumper but it must

1:05:32 > 1:05:37be quite tough when you have already got the gold and go out and push

1:05:37 > 1:05:41yourself to be competitive against yourself.I think that part of

1:05:41 > 1:05:45athletics is being competitive for yourself, looking for faster times

1:05:45 > 1:05:54and higher jumps become a -- because there are records and trying to show

1:05:54 > 1:05:59you are the best you can be producing best performance when it

1:05:59 > 1:06:03counts, trying to get a higher height, you will do that in

1:06:03 > 1:06:07competition rather than trying to do it in practice, your chance of

1:06:07 > 1:06:10getting that height is better in the competition. The motivation comes

1:06:10 > 1:06:15from trying to get up on that world all-time list, I'm sure the

1:06:15 > 1:06:19motivation was there but it didn't happen for her today.Let's look at

1:06:19 > 1:06:25Lysenko and his winning jump, which was when he gets it together a thing

1:06:25 > 1:06:31of beauty. You have seen consistency in his run-up. That clearance was

1:06:31 > 1:06:36just staggering. That consistency of run-up is key to jumping heights

1:06:36 > 1:06:40because you trusted, your placement is correct every time you go to take

1:06:40 > 1:06:44off and you set up technically in the right position to give yourself

1:06:44 > 1:06:48the room to clear the height. Unfortunately for Morgan today when

1:06:48 > 1:06:52we think about the differences between the consistent jumpers and

1:06:52 > 1:06:58being consistent jumpers it is about work on the runway and the position

1:06:58 > 1:07:01they arrived to the bar in.Tony mentioned the rivalry from Barshim

1:07:01 > 1:07:08from last summer to today, that will be a great thing to watch over the

1:07:08 > 1:07:12years, just 20 years old.The fact he is so young and energetic, but

1:07:12 > 1:07:16also to add to that he has this genuine skill and desire to jump

1:07:16 > 1:07:20high. He took on the challenge and he will look at Barshim and think he

1:07:20 > 1:07:23is the world champion and has jumped really high and I've got to take him

1:07:23 > 1:07:30out and he did it today.Lasitskene is going for 2.01 again and she gets

1:07:30 > 1:07:36it and she still doesn't look very happy.But it's effortless. She's

1:07:36 > 1:07:44got to be citing the world record at some stage in her career because she

1:07:44 > 1:07:49is so consistently over two metres. 2.10 is a big jump, it has been a

1:07:49 > 1:07:56world record for sometime. She's got it in her.She has to, at least

1:07:56 > 1:08:01consistently deliver on the big stages, the next step is world

1:08:01 > 1:08:05records.Maybe that's what she is saving the big smile for.

1:08:05 > 1:08:09LAUGHTER She is the world indoor champion,

1:08:09 > 1:08:12though, and congratulations to her and in the end it was a great high

1:08:12 > 1:08:17jump competition. Coming up on the track, the first race on the track,

1:08:17 > 1:08:21the first final of these championships is the women's 3000

1:08:21 > 1:08:24metres. One year ago in Laura Muir conquered the European Indoor

1:08:24 > 1:08:28challenges that lay before her in Belgrade with two golds. This is a

1:08:28 > 1:08:37chance for her to win her first global medal on the world stage.

1:08:47 > 1:08:51COMMENTATOR: Once more, what an athlete this woman is, Genzebe

1:08:51 > 1:08:56Dibaba. It will be gold. It's going to be a gold medal for Netherlands

1:08:56 > 1:09:01as Hassan

1:09:02 > 1:09:06as Hassan wins the title. Look at this last lap from Hellen Obiri.

1:09:06 > 1:09:14Gold to Kenya. But here is Laura Muir. She has now got two gold

1:09:14 > 1:09:18medals and she is the champion again and it's another record.

1:09:20 > 1:09:27STUDIO: Paula Radcliffe is in the commentary box ahead of this race

1:09:27 > 1:09:32for us. Paula, we have seen the athletes come out and they have had

1:09:32 > 1:09:37their first taste of the track tonight. You were watching from up

1:09:37 > 1:09:40there, no doubt. Your thoughts on Laura this evening? She has come

1:09:40 > 1:09:46into this year and it's a bit of an off year for her, we mentioned how

1:09:46 > 1:09:49she is concentrating on her studies. In some ways that means she is tired

1:09:49 > 1:09:54but also there is no pressure on her. Wenxiu came in with those

1:09:54 > 1:09:58expectations last year in Belgrade, she can really go out and have fun

1:09:58 > 1:10:04tonight. Having said that, the other girls will be well aware she has

1:10:04 > 1:10:08already won and they will look to her to see when she makes her move.

1:10:08 > 1:10:12There will not be anyone apart from Klosterhalfen or Dibaba who will

1:10:12 > 1:10:17make a move before Laura Muir tonight.Tactics, Laura Muir loves

1:10:17 > 1:10:21to take it out and she loves the front running but indoors it's very

1:10:21 > 1:10:25difficult to have it your own way and at a major championship it is

1:10:25 > 1:10:29difficult to have it your own way like that.It is. Undoubtedly she

1:10:29 > 1:10:33will have come in with a plan but she and Andy will have sat down and

1:10:33 > 1:10:38made a plan but it must be flexible because like you said indoors things

1:10:38 > 1:10:41can change so quickly and she must be well aware of what is going on

1:10:41 > 1:10:46around her, who is around her and be careful when she is making moves.

1:10:46 > 1:10:50Paula, you mentioned early on to make the field is loaded, Genzebe

1:10:50 > 1:10:52Dibaba, the world champion from two years ago is in there amongst others

1:10:52 > 1:10:57and they know the threat that Laura poses to them, obviously from London

1:10:57 > 1:11:04and racing her on the circuit. What kind of tactics will Dibaba go for?

1:11:04 > 1:11:09Interesting, Dibaba has raced well, she has run a 3.57, undoubtedly in

1:11:09 > 1:11:14good shape, not as good a shape as the years when we have seen her come

1:11:14 > 1:11:19out and run 8.16. She will be aware Laura Muir has finishing speed,

1:11:19 > 1:11:23Hoolahan can close very fast guy she closed in 28 seconds in the US

1:11:23 > 1:11:27championships so if they let it go to slow she becomes a big danger. I

1:11:27 > 1:11:32think Dibaba might panic. She has the likes of Obiri and Hassan who

1:11:32 > 1:11:36will not make a move early on and she might decide to go early which

1:11:36 > 1:11:39will help Laura. She knows all about Obiri and Hassan because she was in

1:11:39 > 1:11:46the race with them in the summer, the 5000 meteors in London when

1:11:46 > 1:11:51Obiri won gold and Hassan took the bronze -- 5000 metres. All of the

1:11:51 > 1:11:55runners know and respect each other here and they know where each

1:11:55 > 1:11:58other's strengths lie and I'm sure there is lots of respect for Laura

1:11:58 > 1:12:02Muir among them and lots of fear for the way she runs, she runs in a

1:12:02 > 1:12:06fearless way and she will take you by the scruff of the neck and she is

1:12:06 > 1:12:09not afraid to lay it all out there and I fully expect her to do that

1:12:09 > 1:12:13tonight but I hope she doesn't go too soon.Thank you, Paula. We will

1:12:13 > 1:12:18hear from the Eilish McColgan who is of course running tonight as well

1:12:18 > 1:12:23with her very famous coach and mum, of course, Liz McColgan. We saw them

1:12:23 > 1:12:29together earlier this evening. This is what Eilish had to say about this

1:12:29 > 1:12:33one.I feel like a medal would be a very tough ask considering it's

1:12:33 > 1:12:38probably the best fielding history of 3000 metre running. For me, if I

1:12:38 > 1:12:46could go in and run a PB that is all I could ask for. I Lutfur Rahman a

1:12:46 > 1:12:50fast race and a strong race and come out of things knowing that I have

1:12:50 > 1:12:54the speed in my legs and that sort of pace which will help me over the

1:12:54 > 1:13:005K later on this year. Outdoor 5K is my priority so I feel like a three K

1:13:00 > 1:13:05is a good training thing for me to do to work on my speed work for the

1:13:05 > 1:13:12outdoor season. So, yeah, for me to run a PB and be competitive that's

1:13:12 > 1:13:15what I want to become a competitive against these girls and not fear

1:13:15 > 1:13:19them because anything can happen in any indoor race. I think there is

1:13:19 > 1:13:25something like 12 girls sub 8.42. We have probably had five goals in the

1:13:25 > 1:13:33history in the UK run sub 8.42. Is a strong field, Hassan from the

1:13:33 > 1:13:37Netherlands, Obiri comp Dibaba and Laura Muir, so even the top side of

1:13:37 > 1:13:41things is very strong but the depth throughout the field as well --

1:13:41 > 1:13:46Obiri and Dibaba. It is a really unique race, much stronger than the

1:13:46 > 1:13:501500 so I'm really excited and almost intrigued to see how it will

1:13:50 > 1:13:55go. I just can't wait to get out there now and hopefully come away

1:13:55 > 1:13:59with a quick time.STUDIO: We mentioned, of course, Laura Muir

1:13:59 > 1:14:03sacrificed the Commonwealth Games because of her studies. Colin, you

1:14:03 > 1:14:07were a star at both, world indoors and world Commonwealth Games, but

1:14:07 > 1:14:13knowing how much it means to her

1:14:15 > 1:14:17knowing how much it means to her off to race for Scotland she will be

1:14:17 > 1:14:20putting so much into this diet, you Laura Muir, because this is a big

1:14:20 > 1:14:22Championships, because until the Europeans in August this is it for

1:14:22 > 1:14:25her.This must be her focus now, she will engage with the whole crowd and

1:14:25 > 1:14:27hope the home supporters will see her through. This is incredible, as

1:14:27 > 1:14:30has been said, an incredibly talented field, at no stage in the

1:14:30 > 1:14:34race will there be what I would describe as clear air where you

1:14:34 > 1:14:40could run free and fast. There will always be competitive aspects to it

1:14:40 > 1:14:43and Laura will relish the opportunity of the home crowd giving

1:14:43 > 1:14:47her support. She knows this is a good opportunity for her and I think

1:14:47 > 1:14:52all of us will be cheering her every single lap.She was so good in

1:14:52 > 1:14:57Belgrade, the field not nearly as strong as it is tonight.Yeah, it's

1:14:57 > 1:15:04not a strong. It was strong in Belgrade and tonight it is. She is a

1:15:04 > 1:15:10different athlete, she talked about how her mindset is. She is a

1:15:10 > 1:15:14different athlete. We must commend her with making those tough

1:15:14 > 1:15:19decisions that suit her as a professional athlete but as a

1:15:19 > 1:15:23veterinary student going forward. That's her life going forward.

1:15:23 > 1:15:26Making those life choices are important and you've got to get it

1:15:26 > 1:15:30right.Steve Cram is up on our commentary platform ahead of this

1:15:30 > 1:15:34one. Welcome back from Pyeongchang, Steve, glad you made it back for

1:15:34 > 1:15:38this one and four tonight because there seems to be a tempering of

1:15:38 > 1:15:42expectation of Laura Muir ahead of this perhaps compared to the World

1:15:42 > 1:15:45Championships because her studies have been so intense, she has

1:15:45 > 1:15:48perhaps not on the level of training she had a hell of Belgrade last

1:15:48 > 1:15:53year. Could she surprise us? Could she get on to the rostrum? Do you

1:15:53 > 1:15:56expect her to push for the medals?

1:15:56 > 1:16:03Expect is a strong word. Yes, Laura expects that. I spoke to her at the

1:16:03 > 1:16:11hotel. She is very relaxed. This is tough. She know it is's tough.

1:16:11 > 1:16:19Dibaba, Paula said is beatable. Obiri is beet beatable.

1:16:21 > 1:16:29Obiri is beet beatable. -- beatable. Hassan has won one race. She needs

1:16:29 > 1:16:35to be patient. If she gives herself a good chance on the last lap I

1:16:35 > 1:16:41think she could win a medal. Lasitskene had her final attempt.

1:16:41 > 1:16:46Walking away from here tonight with that Gold medal that she cleared at

1:16:46 > 1:16:542.01 earlier. She's so far and away the dominant high jumper in the

1:16:54 > 1:16:59world. As Denise said, one day perhaps that world record will be

1:16:59 > 1:17:03hers and maybe not too far away. . Back to that 3000 metres. The

1:17:03 > 1:17:07fireworks are coming. The grand entrances will be coming in a moment

1:17:07 > 1:17:16as well. Just see that failure one more time. Steve, they will make

1:17:16 > 1:17:22their entrance into the arena in a moment. Eilish McColgan will hope

1:17:22 > 1:17:25it's the start of another good year for her. She made great progress

1:17:25 > 1:17:34last year? She made great progress. At the European Indoor door

1:17:34 > 1:17:38Championships where Laura won Eilish McColgan got bronze and kicked them

1:17:38 > 1:17:41into a a good season. I think they made a mess of it. That high jump

1:17:41 > 1:17:47was great. The girls were told there may be a little delay. Nothing worse

1:17:47 > 1:17:51than lining up for a World Championship final and that is what

1:17:51 > 1:17:57it is and being delayed. That isn't a Grand Prix event. It should have

1:17:57 > 1:18:02been choreographed better. This is has not been good for the 3,000

1:18:02 > 1:18:05girls they are ready to come out. Thank you Steve. I wouldn't expect

1:18:05 > 1:18:11anything else but a crumble on night one. We love you for that. They are

1:18:11 > 1:18:16ready to come out now for the 3000 metres. The first race on the track.

1:18:16 > 1:18:23The first final on the track of these World Indoor Championships.

1:18:23 > 1:18:28After that almost medal chance there from Morgan Lake what will it do for

1:18:28 > 1:18:32the British team if Laura Muir can push herself amongst the medals?

1:18:32 > 1:18:36It's a natural lift. Be honest, medals for the British team are

1:18:36 > 1:18:41going to be light on the ground. That's for many reasons, one in

1:18:41 > 1:18:43particular, you highlighted, the Commonwealth Games. People are

1:18:43 > 1:18:45making the choice not to be here.

1:18:45 > 1:18:46Commonwealth Games. People are making the choice not to be here. It

1:18:46 > 1:18:52will be great for the team if she can deliver here. The fireworks are

1:18:52 > 1:18:56coming, the lights are down. Steve Cram it's over to you and Paula

1:18:56 > 1:19:00Radcliffe. COMMENTATOR: Thank you. They will be

1:19:00 > 1:19:05introduced from that door on the right hand side. The far side of the

1:19:05 > 1:19:12track. The fireworks, whatever else we are going to get, will begin in a

1:19:12 > 1:19:17couple of seconds time. Out one by one fairly quickly. The track events

1:19:17 > 1:19:22more of an individual introduction. This is an incredibly strong field.

1:19:22 > 1:19:25Genevieve Lalonde had a good start to her season. New Canadian record

1:19:25 > 1:19:36holder. Then second out is Eilish McColgan. As I said, Eilish McColgan

1:19:36 > 1:19:40that indoor performance where she picked up a couple of places on the

1:19:40 > 1:19:44last 200 metres really set her up nicely for an incredible year for

1:19:44 > 1:19:47her in terms of times and performances. Tamara Armoush,

1:19:47 > 1:19:54running for Jordan. 9.27. She will do well to stay with this field.

1:19:54 > 1:20:04Sifan Hassan. I said - I can't see - she's run a good 3000. Trains in

1:20:04 > 1:20:10America. Dominique Scott, very good last 18 months or so. Former

1:20:10 > 1:20:16US-based South African. The next athlete out I think, Paula is right

1:20:16 > 1:20:21to highlight as a threat. Shelby Houlihan doubled up with the US

1:20:21 > 1:20:29champs. She had a great 3000 race and won the 1500. In the shape of

1:20:29 > 1:20:33her life. Konstanze Klosterhalfen the 21-year-old German who loves to

1:20:33 > 1:20:41front run. Ran a superb time at the German Championships on her own.

1:20:41 > 1:20:44Genzebe Dibaba the two-time championship at this distance at the

1:20:44 > 1:20:53World Indoors. At her best very difficult to beat. Katie Mackey the

1:20:53 > 1:21:02second of the two Americans. Pipped Colbourne on the line in the US

1:21:02 > 1:21:05championships to take the second spot. Fantu Worku may do work for

1:21:05 > 1:21:12Dibaba or help her out. She's only 18. Good junior career and her first

1:21:12 > 1:21:16taj of a major championships as a senior. Meraf Bahta, runs for

1:21:16 > 1:21:24Sweden. She is wondering where to go. Former European Champion at 5000

1:21:24 > 1:21:30metres. Laura Muir will get a great reception. As Paula was saying, an

1:21:30 > 1:21:36eventful journey down. Two flights cancelled. Decided to make it by

1:21:36 > 1:21:42car. Had to fight their way down the M74. Thankfully after that things

1:21:42 > 1:21:48got easier. It was late last night she got here. Seems pretty relaxed

1:21:48 > 1:21:55about that. Hellen Obiri almost tripping up. Can she add the World

1:21:55 > 1:22:01Indoor title here. Hellen Obiri a were former World Indoor Champion in

1:22:01 > 1:22:062012 herself. Well, I think for distance runners it's the sort of

1:22:06 > 1:22:11race that they really relish with Laura Muir taking on some of the

1:22:11 > 1:22:19world's best distance runners at 1500 and 5000 metres coming together

1:22:19 > 1:22:25at the classic 3,000-metre distance.

1:22:29 > 1:22:3615 laps indoors. Eilish McColgan joining Laura Muir in their quest to

1:22:36 > 1:22:44win a medal for Great Britain.

1:22:44 > 1:22:503,000-metre race which brings together the quick 1500 metre runs,

1:22:50 > 1:22:55the distance specialists as well. With Laura Muir having 1.59 800

1:22:55 > 1:22:58metres with the likes of Genzebe Dibaba will not hang around until

1:22:58 > 1:23:02the last two or three laps. Others can finish fast. As Paula rightly

1:23:02 > 1:23:07said. Paula, as ever, these races tend to start slowly and then at

1:23:07 > 1:23:16some point it will get going? They did. The prize for starting the

1:23:16 > 1:23:20slowest went to Genzebe Dibaba. She gave the others a good second or so

1:23:20 > 1:23:25head start. She has got what she wanted. Able now to track Sifan

1:23:25 > 1:23:28Hassan and keep her eye on the rest of the field. Laura Muir has found

1:23:28 > 1:23:32herself at the front. Which is probably what the rest of the field

1:23:32 > 1:23:38would have expected.Laura I think is an athlete who excels indoors.

1:23:38 > 1:23:44She is a great out door runner. She's even better indoors, I think.

1:23:44 > 1:23:47That's partly her stature, that helps. The bad weather up in

1:23:47 > 1:23:52Glasgow, she said I don't mind I've been training indoors for indoor

1:23:52 > 1:23:59championship. Hellen Obiri right there as well. One Kenyan in this.

1:23:59 > 1:24:01Konstanze Klosterhalfen in particular another who likes to

1:24:01 > 1:24:07front run. Klosterhalfen, just that slightly longer stride. Might feel

1:24:07 > 1:24:11more comfortable out front. Wen couldn't get much pushing in the

1:24:11 > 1:24:153000. Laura Muir set off at a reasonable pace. Not too slow. It's

1:24:15 > 1:24:20certainly not the race pace that these women are capable of.No, you

1:24:20 > 1:24:25can see Eilish McColgan having to chop her stride. Another one, like

1:24:25 > 1:24:29Klosterhalfen with a long stride. She is trapped on the curve there

1:24:29 > 1:24:33behind Laura Muir. She's chopping her stride. Clipped by Dominique

1:24:33 > 1:24:38Scott behind her. You can tell she is not happy there. If a gap opens

1:24:38 > 1:24:44up, don't be surprised if you see Eilish McColgan grabs it and

1:24:44 > 1:24:47Klosterhalfen has decided to wait her time a little bit.Six of the

1:24:47 > 1:24:50last seven champions in this distance have come from Ethiopia.

1:24:50 > 1:24:57The one that didn't was Hellen Obiri from Kenya. Were it to not be one of

1:24:57 > 1:25:04those two nations winning, then we breaking long, goes all the way

1:25:04 > 1:25:08back, these championships haven't always been held in two years. 2003

1:25:08 > 1:25:13in Birmingham the year after they were held immediately one year

1:25:13 > 1:25:20afterwards.

1:25:20 > 1:25:22afterwards. Genzebe Dibaba would love to make it three world titles

1:25:22 > 1:25:28for her. Hassan winning the 1500 metre title in Portland. No slouch

1:25:28 > 1:25:34in the latter stages. It was a medal of 5000 she won outdoors. There she

1:25:34 > 1:25:43is, Sifan Hassan. Only won one race, only the 3000 this years? It counts

1:25:43 > 1:25:48in knowing what shape she is in. She took time to settle into the

1:25:48 > 1:25:53training group in Portland. She was a little bit not herself last year.

1:25:53 > 1:25:59Genzebe Dibaba quickly making a move around the outside. Sifan Hassan nt

1:25:59 > 1:26:04yet responded. She has started to close up now. It's not the decisive

1:26:04 > 1:26:08move from Dibaba. It's getting herself in closer order and

1:26:08 > 1:26:10recognising the fact that Konstanze Klosterhalfen had gone hard to the

1:26:10 > 1:26:16front and made her bid to stretch this out a little bit.Very slow

1:26:16 > 1:26:23indeed. It's become a 2,000-metre race. It was the lap before this,

1:26:23 > 1:26:31just about now, that Dibaba last time in Portland threw in a 63

1:26:31 > 1:26:38400-metre stretch that blew the field apart. I don't think she will

1:26:38 > 1:26:43do that here. Bahta is moving up the outside. All the big names starting

1:26:43 > 1:26:47to gather behind Klosterhalfen, who will now have to make this a long

1:26:47 > 1:26:52run for home. She is capable of it. She is very strong. This is going to

1:26:52 > 1:26:56be wearing people down gradually. Can you hang on, particularly for

1:26:56 > 1:27:02the likes of Eilish McColgan. For Shelby Houlihan the others, all of

1:27:02 > 1:27:06those, are now knowing this next 1000 metres will determine whether

1:27:06 > 1:27:09or not they can hang on to be there when the medals are handed out.I

1:27:09 > 1:27:15think this is going to be a long turning of the screw now by

1:27:15 > 1:27:19Konstanze Klosterhalfen. She hasn't put a burst of speed. She has picked

1:27:19 > 1:27:24it up. The big names reacted quickly to that. She is comfortable. Very

1:27:24 > 1:27:29fearless. Not afraid to run from the front. She run 8. 36 this year

1:27:29 > 1:27:32indoors, completely on her own. She knows the pace she can run at her

1:27:32 > 1:27:36own. Almost run better when she is free of the field and able to run.

1:27:36 > 1:27:40She will be glancing up at the screens and she will have seen the

1:27:40 > 1:27:47effect that already that surge has had on the rest of the field.A very

1:27:47 > 1:27:57slow first 1500 metres. Harping back to 2016, Dibaba ran 4.8 for the last

1:27:57 > 1:28:001500 metres. Klosterhalfen trying to do something similar. Will want to

1:28:00 > 1:28:06stretch it out. Doesn't have the 1500 metre pace. She has run sub

1:28:06 > 1:28:10four minutes outdoors. You get the fielding for her she will be hoping

1:28:10 > 1:28:14that she can Whittle this down, gradually get rid of a few. Won't be

1:28:14 > 1:28:18for a few laps yet. Too many good runners behind her. She has a look

1:28:18 > 1:28:22over her showned shoulder. A big screen at the bottom. As you head

1:28:22 > 1:28:28down the back straight. A better view of who is there. It's Dibaba,

1:28:28 > 1:28:33Obiri, Laura Muir, Meraf Bahta, Dominique Scott, Worku, Houlihan and

1:28:33 > 1:28:37McColgan. If this was part of Laura Muir's plan. At the front, but

1:28:37 > 1:28:43wasn't doing anything with it. She didn't want to be there.Her 3000

1:28:43 > 1:28:46metres this year she went too fast and paid for it in the closing

1:28:46 > 1:28:50stages. Within her plan is not to go too fast in the closing stages. To

1:28:50 > 1:28:58set it up for somebody else to do the work and react to it.2.53 for

1:28:58 > 1:29:01the seconding 1000 metres. We are in a real race. Dibaba decided, right,

1:29:01 > 1:29:04thank you very much, Konstanze Klosterhalfen, I will take this on

1:29:04 > 1:29:09for from here. Beer Obiri quick to cover Laura Muir trying to close the

1:29:09 > 1:29:14gap. Klosterhalfen checking as Obiri cuts in front of her. Hassan getting

1:29:14 > 1:29:17closer. Eilish McColgan tailed off at this point. They are coming

1:29:17 > 1:29:22round, four laps. 800 metres. Dibaba issic maing a real run for homele.

1:29:22 > 1:29:26Laura Muir has a great chance. Gathering herself. Still very much

1:29:26 > 1:29:32involved. So there are now nine odd clear. Eight are clear of the rest.

1:29:32 > 1:29:37A big gap after that. Dibaba is having to work hard here. She's not

1:29:37 > 1:29:42having as much effect as she would have wished. Now Hassan moves around

1:29:42 > 1:29:45Laura Muir a on to the shoulder of Klosterhalfen. She has nerves of

1:29:45 > 1:29:49steel. She did not panic at all. There she worked her way gradually.

1:29:49 > 1:29:55A clip there as she went too close. Muir moves around. She has to watch

1:29:55 > 1:30:00as Klosterhalfen moves wide.Dibaba is really turning the screw here.

1:30:00 > 1:30:04Obiri is struggling. Laura Muir looked as though she wanted to get

1:30:04 > 1:30:08ahead. Didn't have the pace. Working hard to find her position shech has

1:30:08 > 1:30:16a Hans chance here. Obiri is fading. The effort to go with Dibaba may

1:30:16 > 1:30:22have put paid to her chances. Dibaba, Hassan and Laura Muir. 400

1:30:22 > 1:30:26metres, two laps.She still has a chance here. Dibaba isn't moving any

1:30:26 > 1:30:30quicker away. She's in the shadow, in the slip stream of Sifan Hassan.

1:30:30 > 1:30:38If she can wait am. Not go too soon and aware of the lap runners as they

1:30:38 > 1:30:41come round.Beerberg is, working hard to hang on to Laura Muir.

1:30:41 > 1:30:47Hassan is bringing Laura Muir back to Dibaba. Dibaba threw in a 31

1:30:47 > 1:30:51after a 33 and a 32. Now Dibaba tries to kick again. Laura Muir

1:30:51 > 1:30:57looks like there is a medal here. Dibaba is trying to go. She has to

1:30:57 > 1:31:03pick it up. They are coming. Hassan and Laura Muir just getting closer.

1:31:03 > 1:31:08Step-by-step. Hassan is closing. Muir is using it to get to Dibaba.

1:31:08 > 1:31:13She's got a medal. What colour will it be? Dibaba trying to make it

1:31:13 > 1:31:17three world titles in a row. Kicks again. Hassan tries. Here comes

1:31:17 > 1:31:22Laura Muir. One last effort. Dibaba, looking for the line. She's just

1:31:22 > 1:31:26about going to make it. Genzebe Dibaba gets the gold, Hassan gets

1:31:26 > 1:31:34the silver. Laura Muir the bronze. 2.37 for the last kilometer. That is

1:31:34 > 1:31:39very, very quick indeed. Eilish McColgan, I'm watching come in

1:31:39 > 1:31:45almost stepping on the kerb as she comes into the last 20

1:31:45 > 1:31:53I thought Laura would have to run extremely well to get a medal in

1:31:53 > 1:31:56this field, you had to beat somebody very good, that somebody on this

1:31:56 > 1:32:00occasion was Hellen Obiri. Hats off to Dibaba, she went hard and knew

1:32:00 > 1:32:05what she had to do, Hassan almost brought Laura back to her, I thought

1:32:05 > 1:32:07Dibaba was starting to struggle with 400 to go but she found something

1:32:07 > 1:32:17else. 31.4 before the last 100 metres and around the last 461.4,

1:32:17 > 1:32:22that fast. That's very, very fast off the back of an already quicker

1:32:22 > 1:32:26second 1000 metres as well, and that's what has done the damage and

1:32:26 > 1:32:32Laura Muir has run really well. Like you, Steve, I thought for a fleeting

1:32:32 > 1:32:36second Dibaba had got the lapse a bit wrong and overcooked it and was

1:32:36 > 1:32:40tying up with 200 metres to go but she found enough to pick it up again

1:32:40 > 1:32:44for the last lap and stay clear of the two chasing who sensed she was

1:32:44 > 1:32:48fading and have the bit between their teeth. Laura Muir did nothing

1:32:48 > 1:32:52wrong, she got herself in the right position to get past Hassan almost

1:32:52 > 1:32:58in the last few strides and she didn't quite have enough. I'm

1:32:58 > 1:33:01pleased for Sifan Hassan. After the year she had last year she needed a

1:33:01 > 1:33:06boost and she has come out and got that tonight. She had a great

1:33:06 > 1:33:10rivalry with Dibaba. Laura Muir will be delighted, she has a world medal

1:33:10 > 1:33:17in doors, something she excels at, and I think to come here and win a

1:33:17 > 1:33:20medal is something she thoroughly deserves. She's got a tough year

1:33:20 > 1:33:25ahead in terms of her studies. We have heard all about that, she will

1:33:25 > 1:33:28be around at the European Championships in the summer and had

1:33:28 > 1:33:35into the Worlds next year. Genzebe Dibaba, 4.4, last 1500 metres, that

1:33:35 > 1:33:41is exceptional. Dibaba, we have to admit, when she goes like this. It

1:33:41 > 1:33:44was smart, Paula, because she may have sensed they were kicking and

1:33:44 > 1:33:47she kicked with about 20 metres to go before the bell which almost

1:33:47 > 1:33:53looked as if she was heading for the line but she had 225 metres to go as

1:33:53 > 1:33:57it were, and she got the extra yard or two which she was able to hold

1:33:57 > 1:34:03onto as they came off the bend. At this point Laura Muir looks like she

1:34:03 > 1:34:07might get past Hassan but Hassan is a fighter and holds her off. Great

1:34:07 > 1:34:12race.Really good race, looking again at the last 50 metres, they

1:34:12 > 1:34:17are all working to the absolute limit, of course, because it is a

1:34:17 > 1:34:20World Championship final. You can see how hard Genzebe Dibaba is

1:34:20 > 1:34:25working on her face, that is rare, it is usual to see Sifan Hassan

1:34:25 > 1:34:28digging deep and Laura Muir working hard but to see Genzebe Dibaba

1:34:28 > 1:34:33working to her limit, we don't often see that. Some people might say

1:34:33 > 1:34:36Sifan Hassan moved out wide and blocked Laura Muir. I don't think

1:34:36 > 1:34:39she was, I think she had seen Bobocea in front of her and she

1:34:39 > 1:34:43moved out thinking she would have to work around that lapped athlete.I

1:34:43 > 1:34:48don't think there is anything wrong with what happened. Dibaba doing the

1:34:48 > 1:34:51smart thing moving out in the home straight and make anyone coming on

1:34:51 > 1:34:55the outside go a bit further. Hassan doing the same, well aware of Laura

1:34:55 > 1:34:59Muir, she never quite got in front of her, or right of alongside her so

1:34:59 > 1:35:03I don't think there was any hindrance, I don't think Laura would

1:35:03 > 1:35:07say there was either. It was all fair. Great bronze medal for Laura

1:35:07 > 1:35:12Muir, 1500 to come, they are all running that, most of these women

1:35:12 > 1:35:17are, that gives us a point to. They have heats tomorrow, Laura Muir is

1:35:17 > 1:35:20in Genzebe Dibaba's heat tomorrow so if they didn't already know each

1:35:20 > 1:35:25other very well, which they do, then they certainly will get to know each

1:35:25 > 1:35:32other's capabilities even more this weekend. That means a lot to Laura

1:35:32 > 1:35:35Muir. She has had lots of ups and downs and that fourth place at the

1:35:35 > 1:35:41World Championships last year was a real stinger for her. So, a bronze

1:35:41 > 1:35:45medal this time, excellent performance, season's best. She has

1:35:45 > 1:35:50run quicker in a mixed race, so although that says a best she ran

1:35:50 > 1:35:55faster earlier on in the season. Sifan Hassan, the silver medal for

1:35:55 > 1:35:58the Netherlands and the Golden Miller goes to Genzebe Dibaba again,

1:35:58 > 1:36:03of Ethiopia. -- the gold medal.

1:36:03 > 1:36:03Miller goes to Genzebe Dibaba again, of Ethiopia. -- the gold medal.

1:36:03 > 1:36:07STUDIO: That was a good way to end the first night, great race and

1:36:07 > 1:36:12fantastic finish from Laura Muir.It was a stunning race, thrilling from

1:36:12 > 1:36:16the start. It was always going to be, not so scrappy, but very

1:36:16 > 1:36:19competitive and Laura was in the right place at the right time ready

1:36:19 > 1:36:25to strike. Fantastic distance running. What did you make of the

1:36:25 > 1:36:28elbows on the line, Michael?I thought it was smart running by

1:36:28 > 1:36:32Hassan, actually. I think for Laura this was always going to be tough

1:36:32 > 1:36:36but there was going to be an opportunity and it was that balance,

1:36:36 > 1:36:40tough race with great athletes but I think they are all aware that she

1:36:40 > 1:36:43has been running really well and she seems to have really matured over

1:36:43 > 1:36:47the years. Listening to her interviews she sounds much more sure

1:36:47 > 1:36:50of herself and confident which ultimately translates into success

1:36:50 > 1:36:56on the track. This as a global medal is a fantastic start for her in what

1:36:56 > 1:37:01could be an amazing future. We saw last year outdoors she is right

1:37:01 > 1:37:11there. This is a great start for her.Obiri, she ended up at

1:37:11 > 1:37:14overtaking, who was fourth in London, this is the progress we are

1:37:14 > 1:37:17talking about with young athletes pushing themselves and this field is

1:37:17 > 1:37:20stacked, it's not like she has come here and put herself among people

1:37:20 > 1:37:25who were not in London. These are the winning she couldn't get past.

1:37:25 > 1:37:29Absolutely and when you take a race like this on, she would have looked

1:37:29 > 1:37:33at the schedule and how it worked out and thought to herself, you know

1:37:33 > 1:37:37what, I'm as good as these athletes these days, my quality and

1:37:37 > 1:37:42performance as I can do our world-class and its been

1:37:42 > 1:37:45demonstrated. No chance of Laura would give up, she worked hard all

1:37:45 > 1:37:50the way into the line, beaten by somebody who was a bit more racist

1:37:50 > 1:37:54Savea the end. She did enough just to make Laura, if she wants this she

1:37:54 > 1:37:58will have to go around a long way. Brilliant race, exciting to see for

1:37:58 > 1:38:04all of us, and the kind of race we were expecting.Paula, who is in the

1:38:04 > 1:38:15commentary box, I believe, if this is the moment she is breaking in

1:38:15 > 1:38:17is the moment she is breaking in to global medals and doing it in one of

1:38:17 > 1:38:19the toughest years of her life when she does her finals for her better

1:38:19 > 1:38:21marine exams, things are looking rosy for Laura Muir's running

1:38:21 > 1:38:24future.It looks really good and it's almost like she has cracked the

1:38:24 > 1:38:26nemesis that was stopping her breaking through and getting that

1:38:26 > 1:38:30medal. So many times she came been challenging for a medal, didn't do

1:38:30 > 1:38:34anything wrong, ran really well but didn't walk away with a medal. This

1:38:34 > 1:38:38time she walks away with a medal and knows she hasn't come in 100% and

1:38:38 > 1:38:43she knows she can build on that and come back in the 1500 and do it

1:38:43 > 1:38:47again.They were exhausted, Laura was lying on the track and looked

1:38:47 > 1:38:52spent. You have no worries about her being back for 1500 metres? She

1:38:52 > 1:38:57will. You should try and run a thousand metres and see what you

1:38:57 > 1:39:00looked like.I wasn't judging her, just wondering how they will get

1:39:00 > 1:39:05themselves up tomorrow for the 1500 metres.Laura is one of the

1:39:05 > 1:39:08strongest athletes out there so she will recover from that, not with

1:39:08 > 1:39:13ease, but she will take it in her stride. What will she do, Paula?

1:39:13 > 1:39:19Will she have an ice bath? You don't need an ice bath, just run outside.

1:39:19 > 1:39:24Just go down to the canal! Sure have some sort of ice bath, definitely a

1:39:24 > 1:39:28massage, get and food into her quickly and a good night's sleep to

1:39:28 > 1:39:32recover.Thank you, Paula. We have three medal ceremonies back to back

1:39:32 > 1:39:37because all of these events tonight were finals, and those high jump

1:39:37 > 1:39:41medal ceremonies will come first. It's the women's first and Steve

1:39:41 > 1:39:42Cram, take it away.

1:39:42 > 1:39:43It's the women's first and Steve Cram, take it away. COMMENTATOR:

1:39:43 > 1:39:48Thank you. This is all looking very nice, Seb Coe walking out with a bit

1:39:48 > 1:39:54of atmosphere, a bit of moody music. Seb Coe is a big fan of jazz, in

1:39:54 > 1:40:00case you didn't know. Good competition. Morgan Lake, so close

1:40:00 > 1:40:03to winning a medal, finishing in fourth place after a couple of

1:40:03 > 1:40:14failures at her opening height of 1.84. But the champion Lasitskene

1:40:14 > 1:40:21has been supreme, her 30th consecutive victory. Just

1:40:21 > 1:40:24remembering that Sebastian Coe and the IAAF still not allowing athletes

1:40:24 > 1:40:27to compete for Russia. You may have been following what happened at the

1:40:27 > 1:40:31Winter Olympics when they were named as Olympic athletes from Russia.

1:40:31 > 1:40:38They compete under the acronym ANA here but I haven't seen a Russian

1:40:38 > 1:40:41flag in Birmingham so I'm sure that will be fluttering when she stands

1:40:41 > 1:40:52on the rostrum here. Sebastian Coe, IAAF President. So,

1:40:52 > 1:40:59Sebastian Coe gets to present these striking medals, as Gabby was

1:40:59 > 1:41:03saying, designed by local students, the bronze medal going to Alessia

1:41:03 > 1:41:08Trost of Italy.

1:41:10 > 1:41:13Trost of Italy. Remember her being so delighted when she won a medal at

1:41:13 > 1:41:19the European Indoors three years ago in 2015. That was a bit of a

1:41:19 > 1:41:25surprise for her then and I think this one pretty much as much so.

1:41:25 > 1:41:29Only 1.93. I think the jury might be out as to whether the whole thing

1:41:29 > 1:41:33with the two high jump competition is facing each other. Nice to get

1:41:33 > 1:41:39the thoughts of the competitors themselves on that. The former

1:41:39 > 1:41:43champion now, she came in as the defending champion, Vashti

1:41:43 > 1:41:46Cunningham, still just 20. Amazing to think that because she has been

1:41:46 > 1:41:52talked about for such a long time. Silver medal this time. Only, I say

1:41:52 > 1:41:56only, clearing 1.93, you'd expect her to come to a World Indoor

1:41:56 > 1:42:01Championships and go a bit higher than that. But no doubt about the

1:42:01 > 1:42:11winner. Authorised neutral athlete Mariya Lasitskene. The gold medal

1:42:11 > 1:42:16continuing what has been a stunning couple of years for her, world

1:42:16 > 1:42:21champion in 2015 and 2017, not allowed to compete in the Olympic

1:42:21 > 1:42:25Games, of course. Morgan Lake's fourth is the best ever position by

1:42:25 > 1:42:30a Brit in this event, the previous was fifth by Dyah Davis and Debbie

1:42:30 > 1:42:35Marti.

1:42:45 > 1:42:55-- Diana Davis.

1:43:36 > 1:43:40So, no national anthem for Lasitskene, I think that is the IAAF

1:43:40 > 1:43:45hymn, it may have been written by Seb Coe, not sure. There are your

1:43:45 > 1:43:49medallists. The men's high jump to come shortly and then Laura Muir in

1:43:49 > 1:43:54the 3000 metres after that.

1:43:56 > 1:43:59the 3000 metres after that. Lots of Russian athletes will think

1:43:59 > 1:44:02themselves lucky they are allowed to compete with an exemption from the

1:44:02 > 1:44:05band but she didn't look particularly impressed at the IAAF

1:44:05 > 1:44:09music playing instead of the Russian anthem, and it must be a strange

1:44:09 > 1:44:13position to be in when you are a world champion and it's that moment

1:44:13 > 1:44:17of your flag and your anthem doesn't happen.It doesn't but she was

1:44:17 > 1:44:20looking for the flags because I couldn't see them either.They were

1:44:20 > 1:44:25at the very far end.She knows the position. What you can't take away

1:44:25 > 1:44:32from her is her incredible unbeaten run. She is just sensational. I

1:44:32 > 1:44:36can't think of another athlete of the top of my head who has had

1:44:36 > 1:44:41such...38. That was her 30th unbeaten, consecutive victory. How

1:44:41 > 1:44:51long did you,, Michael?58.No, whatever!It's at least a big enough

1:44:51 > 1:44:59number that we will never know what it is.Still only half of Ed Moses.

1:44:59 > 1:45:07There was 89 in the sprints as well. She has a long way to go.Yes.This

1:45:07 > 1:45:11is her winning jump of 1.96, and of course at this point she had cleared

1:45:11 > 1:45:15everything before her.

1:45:15 > 1:45:19What I like about it. She could have quit, couldn't she. She could have

1:45:19 > 1:45:24said, I will do these consistently, enough to win. I think she wants to

1:45:24 > 1:45:32go for that over two metres time and time again. If you get through every

1:45:32 > 1:45:35single competition over two metres mark that is huge. It gets into the

1:45:35 > 1:45:39mindset of your rivals. It doesn't matter what she will do, she will

1:45:39 > 1:45:43always get over that two metres, so you have to raise your game. She

1:45:43 > 1:45:49wants more than that. She's got to. Two metres consistently, I would say

1:45:49 > 1:45:54is nothing, she does it is with such ease she has to be putting herself

1:45:54 > 1:46:01against - OK can I get up to 2.08. Went to 2.07. She needs those higher

1:46:01 > 1:46:05heights to know what 2.10 might really feel like. When you are

1:46:05 > 1:46:09feeling it and you are feeling confident and things are flowing,

1:46:09 > 1:46:12you are executing exactly as you planned. Which doesn't always

1:46:12 > 1:46:16happen, when that is the case you know this is an opportunity then for

1:46:16 > 1:46:19me to achieve maybe a personal best. That's your opportunity to go for

1:46:19 > 1:46:24it.I'm sure somebody will come along who will push her and push her

1:46:24 > 1:46:28and break that consecutive streak at some point. At the moment there

1:46:28 > 1:46:32isn't that kind of rivalry like we are seeing here with the men, with

1:46:32 > 1:46:36Barshim and Lysenko. They have traded places from the summer, from

1:46:36 > 1:46:40London when Barshim was the World Champion and Lysenko will be the man

1:46:40 > 1:46:47on the top podium. Steve Cram.

1:46:47 > 1:46:51on the top podium. Steve Cram. STER CRAM: He is. We will hear that

1:46:51 > 1:46:58anthem again. I knew it wasn't written by Seb Coe. Just in case you

1:46:58 > 1:47:03thought... I was only joke being that. This men's competition. To

1:47:03 > 1:47:08remind you, Robbie Grabarz finishing in ninth place. Disappointment for

1:47:08 > 1:47:20him going out at 2.25. Took three attempt to get over 2.20.The Iaaf

1:47:20 > 1:47:25Vice President, Dahlan Al Hamid. He will present the medals for this

1:47:25 > 1:47:35event. The man who finishes third, Germany I don't think have ever won

1:47:35 > 1:47:41a high jump medal indoors.

1:47:41 > 1:47:44a high jump medal indoors. It's his country's first and his in this

1:47:44 > 1:47:52event. Delighted young man. 2.29. Deseent performance. He thought he

1:47:52 > 1:47:56might not get a medal if he clears 2.29. He Detective Inspector have to

1:47:56 > 1:48:01go too high to get a medal. The top two, the two we would have expected

1:48:01 > 1:48:08before hand, not necessarily in this order.

1:48:08 > 1:48:31order. -- didn't. His -- he always has a smiles.

1:48:34 > 1:48:38Our champion Danil Lysenko, authorised neutral athlete. Cleared

1:48:38 > 1:48:45of course by Iaaf to compete. So he will get to hear the Iaaf hymn as

1:48:45 > 1:48:51well. Good clearance from him at the end, wasn't it, 2.36. Good way to

1:48:51 > 1:49:01win a good competition between himself and Barshim.

1:49:32 > 1:49:41Iaaf ANTHEM PLAYS

1:49:56 > 1:50:01APPLAUSE Silver out doors in London last year

1:50:01 > 1:50:07and he's turned that into a Gold medal and the title of World

1:50:07 > 1:50:11Champion, Danil Lysenko. Still just 20 himself as well. He's got a big

1:50:11 > 1:50:17future. No doubt these two will be scrapping over the medals I'm sure

1:50:17 > 1:50:28for a few years to come. This time it's Lysenko who comes out on top.

1:50:41 > 1:50:46APPLAUSE

1:50:47 > 1:50:51STUDIO: Morgan Lake finished fourth in that Women's

1:50:51 > 1:50:51STUDIO: Morgan Lake finished fourth in that Women's High Jump

1:50:51 > 1:50:57competition. To close to winning her first major medal on the global

1:50:57 > 1:51:02stage. It wasn't to be. We caught up with her straight afterwards.

1:51:02 > 1:51:08Morgan, I heat hate to go in with a cliche so early. Fourth place, a

1:51:08 > 1:51:11bitter place to come? Not a fun place to come especially being able

1:51:11 > 1:51:16to jump the same as silver and bronze. 1.93 on countback.

1:51:16 > 1:51:21Bittersweet moment. How frustrating was that that ultimately it came to

1:51:21 > 1:51:26the countback and it came down to those first two no-jumps?Yeah. I

1:51:26 > 1:51:32was quite nervous at the start. It's a big occasion. My home champs. I

1:51:32 > 1:51:37let it get the best of me. I jumped 85 in warm-up. I knew it was there.

1:51:37 > 1:51:42Lucky to get my third attempt to 84 at the beginning. It came came down

1:51:42 > 1:51:48to that.Having said all that, after the two first no-jumps the thoughts

1:51:48 > 1:51:52in this stadium were clearly ominous, you composed yourself and

1:51:52 > 1:51:57got it. How did you feel at that point?I thobg thought I'd knocked.

1:51:57 > 1:52:02It I hit it and saw rattle. I said please, I need luck. I stayed on.

1:52:02 > 1:52:06Jumps following that were much better. I know what part I need to

1:52:06 > 1:52:12work on now.Another point when you cleared 1.93, you were in a ritual,

1:52:12 > 1:52:17really talking to yourself. What were you saying to yourself?I was

1:52:17 > 1:52:20going through my run-up and what I need to do. Making sure I was in the

1:52:20 > 1:52:27moment. Taking in the crowd, really. It's an improvement on your global

1:52:27 > 1:52:32successes so far.Yeah.Positives to take forward to the Commonwealth

1:52:32 > 1:52:36Games?Definitely positives. Season's best and fourth in the

1:52:36 > 1:52:42world. Can't complain. Puts me in a good place going to the Gold Coast

1:52:42 > 1:52:46in a couple of weeks.Well done. Unfortunately fourth.Thank you very

1:52:46 > 1:52:53much.But Laura Muir did one better than her performance in London. She

1:52:53 > 1:52:58got amongst the medals. She got a bronze. This will be a very proud

1:52:58 > 1:53:03moment for her and for all of us watching her progress, Steve Cram.

1:53:03 > 1:53:03STEVE

1:53:03 > 1:53:06watching her progress, Steve Cram. STEVE CRAM: it will indeed. A full

1:53:06 > 1:53:16set of Scottish medals in the 3000 women indoors.

1:53:16 > 1:53:23women indoors. Murray, and McColgan and Muir has won a bronze. This

1:53:23 > 1:53:33tough, tough race. We talk about greats in our sport.Sifan Hassan

1:53:33 > 1:53:39and Genzebe Dibaba are very much in that bracket. Laura Muir knew that

1:53:39 > 1:53:44to win a medal today she to be at her best, and she was. A tough last

1:53:44 > 1:53:511000 metres. She steps up on the rostrum at a World Championships for

1:53:51 > 1:53:58the first time. European Indoor Champion last year and a bronze at

1:53:58 > 1:54:01the World Indoor Championships. 1500 still to come of course for Laura.

1:54:01 > 1:54:06She will be pleased to have picked something up here. She will be

1:54:06 > 1:54:10running against very much, I think ten of that field will all be

1:54:10 > 1:54:15contesting in the 1500 metres, including the two women who finished

1:54:15 > 1:54:18ahead of her. Sifan Hassan. Sometimes she doesn't give herself a

1:54:18 > 1:54:23chance. She was maybe too far back when Dibaba put her foot down. Did

1:54:23 > 1:54:28her best to close the gap. She had to fight off Laura Muir in the last

1:54:28 > 1:54:3420, 30 metres. Another good performance from the very popular

1:54:34 > 1:54:41Dutch athlete.

1:54:42 > 1:54:51Our winner, a third World Indoor title. Just one shy now of the

1:54:51 > 1:55:01record in this event. Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia.

1:55:01 > 1:55:03of Ethiopia. Had a very disappointing 2016, but she raced

1:55:03 > 1:55:07well so far this indoor season. Not at her absolute best. Good enough

1:55:07 > 1:55:13here. Was helped by Klosterhalfen taking the pace out hard in the

1:55:13 > 1:55:21second 1000 metres. She went harder over the last 1000 and finish well,

1:55:21 > 1:55:27very impressive indeed.

1:56:26 > 1:56:28APPLAUSE Well done Laura Muir. Great start

1:56:28 > 1:56:32Forlan her and the British team to get a medal on the first night.

1:56:32 > 1:56:36Medals will be hard to come back in these World Indoor Championships.

1:56:36 > 1:56:41That bronze, I'm sure as the weekend goes by, we will realise how good

1:56:41 > 1:56:46that is. They will be back tomorrow evening to contest the 1500 heats.

1:56:46 > 1:56:53Laura Muir does have Genzebe Dibaba in her heat tomorrow evening.

1:56:54 > 1:56:55Laura Muir does have Genzebe Dibaba in her heat tomorrow evening.

1:56:55 > 1:56:59STUDIO: Thank you Steve. A lovely moment for Laura Muir. Genzebe

1:56:59 > 1:57:05Dibaba as well of course. Now a double world indoor champion. Just

1:57:05 > 1:57:10completely dominant, isn't she, over the distances. She takes on over the

1:57:10 > 1:57:14world. Fantastic athlete. A tiny athlete. How tiny? She had to have a

1:57:14 > 1:57:21plastic box to step on to the Gold medal platform. Nobody else in the

1:57:21 > 1:57:27high jump competition needed that, but they are obviously a much more

1:57:27 > 1:57:32petite breed, aren't they, these middle and distance run runners.

1:57:32 > 1:57:36Laura Muir has the 1500 metres to come as well. Great moment for her.

1:57:36 > 1:57:40She will go down and no doubt there will be massage and some ice

1:57:40 > 1:57:45involved. Hopefully, lots of sleep. We will see her again in action

1:57:45 > 1:57:49tomorrow and it will be another packed day. We have

1:57:49 > 1:57:51tomorrow and it will be another packed day. We have loads of

1:57:51 > 1:57:55athletics 9.00am tomorrow morning on BBC Two. We are on again for the

1:57:55 > 1:58:01evening session at 5. 50pm. Almost ten hours of live athletics for you

1:58:01 > 1:58:08tomorrow, including the 400 metres. 60 metres heat. Jonelle Filigno

1:58:08 > 1:58:16going, European Champion. What are you looking forward to?Asha.

1:58:16 > 1:58:19going, European Champion. What are you looking forward to?Asha. So

1:58:19 > 1:58:22much to look forward to tomorrow. Great having you back together gang.

1:58:22 > 1:58:26See you here bright and early. 9.00am, tomorrow morning, on BBC

1:58:26 > 1:58:33Two. See you then.
