0:00:51 > 0:00:58A powerful run. It's her personal best.All smiles from Katarina
0:00:58 > 0:01:06Johnson-Thompson. That's more like it. What a performance from Katarina
0:01:06 > 0:01:14Johnson-Thompson!
0:01:14 > 0:01:20Johnson-Thompson!The heat is on.It should be her time now.
0:01:20 > 0:01:25In the next few hours, we shall see if it is. It's a big night for
0:01:25 > 0:01:28Britain's Katarina Johnson-Thompson, going for gold in the pentathlon. If
0:01:28 > 0:01:31you have not been able to go out today because of the snow and
0:01:31 > 0:01:34freezing conditions, stay right where you are. We have some great
0:01:34 > 0:01:39action for you over the next four hours with the likes of Katarina
0:01:39 > 0:01:42Johnson-Thompson and last month's medal winner for Great Britain,
0:01:42 > 0:01:46Laura Muir, all in action. A lot of people have braved conditions to be
0:01:46 > 0:01:50here this evening. It was supposed to be a sell-out, but not quite
0:01:50 > 0:01:54everyone is in their place. But I am delighted that these three. Greg
0:01:54 > 0:01:58Rutherford had no choice, he can't get out of Birmingham! But you
0:01:58 > 0:02:02always intended to be here because it is the men's long jump this
0:02:02 > 0:02:07evening. Denise Lewis and Michael Dobson are here for what could be a
0:02:07 > 0:02:09great evening for Katarina Johnson-Thompson. She has got
0:02:09 > 0:02:16herself into a great position.Yeah. The talk before these championships
0:02:16 > 0:02:20was, could she deliver on her potential? Could she mentally hold
0:02:20 > 0:02:23the pentathlon together and deliver a performance that justifies her
0:02:23 > 0:02:29potential? And so far, it's looking really good. And the long jump
0:02:29 > 0:02:36final, Greg, you say it's not just all about one person. No, I think
0:02:36 > 0:02:44Lawson has jumped well. He is a fast athlete and could be one to watch.
0:02:44 > 0:02:51And we have the women's 60m. It is wide open, Michael. It is. There are
0:02:51 > 0:02:56a lot of races that these ladies today. It's going to be exciting.
0:02:56 > 0:03:02Once we get into the semifinals, we will start to see who emerges as a
0:03:02 > 0:03:05potential medallist because that race is wide open.Well, let's just
0:03:05 > 0:03:13mark your card as to how your evening is going to pan out.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25As Denise said, Katarina Johnson-Thompson has left herself in
0:04:25 > 0:04:31a great position. Here is how her day unfolded. First up on the track,
0:04:31 > 0:04:35we have the 60m hurdles for the pentathlon. It is all done in one
0:04:35 > 0:04:43day.
0:04:44 > 0:04:49day.Is this an opportunity for Katarina Johnson-Thompson?
0:04:56 > 0:05:06Dadic. The medal contender is out.
0:05:06 > 0:05:19Rodriguez, last try.That was much better! That's more like it. She's
0:05:19 > 0:05:35in the lead overall. Shot put next. She moves to the back of the circle.
0:05:35 > 0:05:41That is a really big shot put from Katarina Johnson-Thompson. That is
0:05:41 > 0:05:50huge. That is going to make such a difference to her.
0:05:50 > 0:05:55difference to her. Rodriguez, her final put. That put her into first
0:05:55 > 0:06:04place. She looks relieved and this morning
0:06:04 > 0:06:09the word was that if she gets something with a 12, she will put
0:06:09 > 0:06:11herself in a good position.
0:06:23 > 0:06:30According to our stats expert, who knows a thing or two, he has
0:06:30 > 0:06:34crunched the numbers and if they both hit their PBs, that is what the
0:06:34 > 0:06:39outcome would be. She would have called by some way from Rodriguez.
0:06:39 > 0:06:44There is some room for comfort that. But obviously, hitting your PB in a
0:06:44 > 0:06:48major championship is perhaps easier said than done. But for her, you
0:06:48 > 0:06:53would think it would be the event she would want next, the long jump.
0:06:53 > 0:07:00Yeah. She's jumping well again. 6.71 at the trials. She's looking good on
0:07:00 > 0:07:04the runway. Does she need to hit that personal best? I don't think
0:07:04 > 0:07:08so. She just needs to feel confident and do what she does best in the
0:07:08 > 0:07:12long jump. When she is confident, it's all good. She has had wobbles
0:07:12 > 0:07:17in the long jump in a major championship in Beijing. But it's
0:07:17 > 0:07:22about here, I know what I have got to do. She has made her first jump,
0:07:22 > 0:07:28which must be a comfort for a long jumper.Absolutely. We saw that a
0:07:28 > 0:07:32lot of people are struggling with the runway. It is a quick runway,
0:07:32 > 0:07:41which soon suit Kat. If you tax it, she could jump big today -- if she
0:07:41 > 0:07:49attacks it.As they introduce... I was about to say the contestants,
0:07:49 > 0:07:53but the athletes! As they are introduced, these women have already
0:07:53 > 0:07:56been introduced and have to go through it again. It just ramps up
0:07:56 > 0:08:00the nerves, doesn't it?But it adds a bit of razzmatazz to the event,
0:08:00 > 0:08:07which is nice. We need that. I think the athletes don't really mind, as
0:08:07 > 0:08:11long as they can get through it quickly and keep their minds in a
0:08:11 > 0:08:19safe place, this is fine. There was a big smile on her face just there.
0:08:19 > 0:08:23Michael, she must know this is an event she loves and an event she
0:08:23 > 0:08:31knows she can do in front of a home crowd.I'm not sure if you can judge
0:08:31 > 0:08:39how Kat is feeling based on what you see. It goes up and down. She's
0:08:39 > 0:08:46pretty cagey when it comes to showing exactly what she is feeling.
0:08:46 > 0:08:52I think you wait and see. Also, her mood and her emotional state are
0:08:52 > 0:08:56somewhat dictated by how she performs and how the competition is
0:08:56 > 0:09:01going for her. What we did see which we don't normally see is the
0:09:01 > 0:09:07expression of joyous emotion in the shot put. I talked earlier about how
0:09:07 > 0:09:11she could respond to coming into an event that she hasn't been good at,
0:09:11 > 0:09:17and that is what she is capable of. She has the ability. That body
0:09:17 > 0:09:21language, the buoyancy you see is fantastic. That will bode well
0:09:21 > 0:09:24moving into the long jump.It feels a long time ago that it all started
0:09:24 > 0:09:28in the hurdles. They were first out on the track this morning, those
0:09:28 > 0:09:33women. Five events in one day is more than they used to. It is an
0:09:33 > 0:09:35arduous day but she did the hurdles this morning. She equalled her
0:09:35 > 0:09:41season's best. It wasn't as explosive, perhaps, as you were
0:09:41 > 0:09:47hoping, but it was a steady start. It was steady. She got through it
0:09:47 > 0:09:51safely to put herself in contention. We know she struggles getting out of
0:09:51 > 0:09:58the blocks with those long levers, but moving through to the high jump,
0:09:58 > 0:10:04we know her capabilities and this was a great jump, 1.91. She made it
0:10:04 > 0:10:11look easy.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14look easy.Shame she couldn't get a few more points, but to do what she
0:10:14 > 0:10:21did in the shot put, she will have forgotten that by now.First put, a
0:10:21 > 0:10:25new personal best. Look at that place. I thought it was great. There
0:10:25 > 0:10:33was a sense of relief, as there is one athlete has been working and
0:10:33 > 0:10:38they the benefits.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41they the benefits.Again, I am hesitant to try to read into that
0:10:41 > 0:10:46what it means, because I believe that based on what we have seen
0:10:46 > 0:10:50before, it can change in a heartbeat. So in terms of what she
0:10:50 > 0:10:56needs to do, she doesn't need a PB. She doesn't need to be thinking
0:10:56 > 0:11:02about what happened before in the long jump, just focus, as Greg said,
0:11:02 > 0:11:10getting a safe jump. That then build the confidence. We can also see that
0:11:10 > 0:11:12she is not dwelling on the fact that the high jump didn't go as well as
0:11:12 > 0:11:22she was hoping. It was below par. But she reacted well in getting a PB
0:11:22 > 0:11:25in an event that she is known for not being that great at. It should
0:11:25 > 0:11:28give her the confidence to go out and enjoy an event that she loves
0:11:28 > 0:11:37doing.6.93 is her PB indoors for long jump. There is clear water
0:11:37 > 0:11:41between her and Rodriguez. And Rodriguez has never jumped indoors.
0:11:41 > 0:11:49Kat has a lot of experience. What is the difference for Rodriguez if she
0:11:49 > 0:11:52hasn't jumped indoors? The biggest thing in an indoor arena is that
0:11:52 > 0:11:58there is no wind. With the long jump, it is good to have a bit of a
0:11:58 > 0:12:01following wind to give you an impetus to jump at the end. She will
0:12:01 > 0:12:05not have that. You are on a raised board here, so you are not on the
0:12:05 > 0:12:09solid track that you would be outdoors. There are real
0:12:09 > 0:12:15differences. Generally, it suits the lighter jumpers. But we will see how
0:12:15 > 0:12:17she responds. The Cubans are incredible jumpers, so I expect her
0:12:17 > 0:12:27to do well. She will be getting ready to jump shortly in that long
0:12:27 > 0:12:30jump competition which is just about to get under way. Steve Backley will
0:12:30 > 0:12:39be all over it.I am indeed, Gabby. It has been a compelling morning for
0:12:39 > 0:12:43Katarina Johnson-Thompson. Hopefully, she is refreshed and
0:12:43 > 0:12:53rested after three events in that first morning session.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57first morning session. The long jump is the penultimate event. And it is
0:12:57 > 0:13:02Erica Bougard of the United States.
0:13:02 > 0:13:14She is carrying a hip injury. No, that was an infringement. It sounded
0:13:14 > 0:13:22OK. Must have been a small foul. She is saying it was just beyond the
0:13:22 > 0:13:29legal limit. Crikey, that is about as close as you get without a foul.
0:13:29 > 0:13:35Greg Rutherford was talking about this. Katarina Johnson-Thompson will
0:13:35 > 0:13:44want to get a good jump in. That was not valid for Erica Bougard.
0:13:45 > 0:13:53There is the line-up for the first of the five heats.
0:13:54 > 0:14:01of the five heats. There has been a slight redraw in this one. Silence
0:14:01 > 0:14:06inside the arena.
0:14:10 > 0:14:15inside the arena. This should be a good race.
0:14:24 > 0:14:32Boons has set a new personal best this season. Andrea Vargas of Costa
0:14:32 > 0:14:37Rica in three.
0:14:53 > 0:15:01Watch for Neziri, the Finnish athlete. She is alongside Nelvis,
0:15:01 > 0:15:06who heads this very strong American contingent in the women's hurdles.
0:15:06 > 0:15:14They have the three quickest times. So the United States could form a
0:15:14 > 0:15:23clean sweep here.
0:15:30 > 0:15:36Eefje Boons, Andrea Vargas, Sharika Nelvis, Nooralotta Neziri, Elizabeth
0:15:36 > 0:15:46El Torito, Stephanie Bendrat. Four to go to automatically. A good start
0:15:46 > 0:15:52by Veronica Borsi. Through comes Sharika Nelvis. Looking very
0:15:52 > 0:16:03comfortable. 7.97 for Sharika Nelvis. And in fact it is a Elisavet
0:16:03 > 0:16:06Pesiridou of Greece who is down, the last barrier her undoing. A
0:16:06 > 0:16:11demonstration of what can go wrong in the hurdles. And Elisavet
0:16:11 > 0:16:16Pesiridou might have been expected to come through, but Sharika Nelvis
0:16:16 > 0:16:21avoiding such pitfalls, and she is through to the semifinals. Take us
0:16:21 > 0:16:28through this.Eefje Boons can be difficult for some athletes,
0:16:28 > 0:16:35especially burglars, because you get a trampoline effect and, if you are
0:16:35 > 0:16:38not used to that, running consistently on these boards, it can
0:16:38 > 0:16:41be tricky, and that is what happened to the Greek lady. But Sharika
0:16:41 > 0:16:49Nelvis is quality. I think she will be looking forward to encountering
0:16:49 > 0:16:56her fellow countryman later. 7.90 seven. It looks great.A great start
0:16:56 > 0:17:01by Stephanie Bendrat, who has been going so well this season. She just
0:17:01 > 0:17:08clipped the barrier, but Sharika Nelvis was going so well. Contrast
0:17:08 > 0:17:12macro --a contrast to Glasgow, but totally in control here, cruising
0:17:12 > 0:17:16through dress up eight second performance, looking comfortable. --
0:17:16 > 0:17:22through to a below eight second. Katarina Johnson-Thompson looking
0:17:22 > 0:17:27forward to her first long jump, penultimate event in the Pentax
0:17:27 > 0:17:33long. At the moment, she is in second place, 13 points behind
0:17:33 > 0:17:37Rodriguez, the Cuban. But this is an event where she can dominate, she
0:17:37 > 0:17:40can definitely get back into the lead, and she would expect to. And
0:17:40 > 0:17:48possibly she'd expect to get some daylight between her and the rest of
0:17:48 > 0:17:54the world season's best personal best, something in excess of 6.50
0:17:54 > 0:18:00would be great. It's a good jump. Waiting to see the white flag. It
0:18:00 > 0:18:08is. Look at that, a really good start. In and around 6.5 metres. Was
0:18:08 > 0:18:13that a shake of the head? Good effort. She should be pleased,
0:18:13 > 0:18:15controlled the runway really well, didn't lengthen like sometimes,
0:18:15 > 0:18:25plenty of room. Rate start. -- great start.Her coach looking on, 6.50
0:18:25 > 0:18:32exactly, a really good start. With Rodriguez to go next, and Ivona
0:18:32 > 0:18:37Dadic a couple points behind, she needs to marker out and put pressure
0:18:37 > 0:18:44on the other girls. That's what she done, because Rodriguez's PB is just
0:18:44 > 0:18:496.29 from this year. Can she respond? It's around the six-metre
0:18:49 > 0:19:01mark, way down on Johnson Thompson, and it's a foul. So Rodriguez, the
0:19:01 > 0:19:04leader, a foul in the first round, under the pressure. She wouldn't
0:19:04 > 0:19:13have wanted that. The tiniest of margins, just drifting. But now
0:19:13 > 0:19:17Katarina is settled, she's got 6.50 in the bank, it's up to the other
0:19:17 > 0:19:23girls to put the marker down. Kat can now build on that. She is in the
0:19:23 > 0:19:27driving seat, exactly what you want in the first round. Ivona Dadic of
0:19:27 > 0:19:33Russia, in third place coming into this long jump. Season best of 6.35,
0:19:33 > 0:19:40so down on Johnson Thompson also in her best effort. Somewhere just over
0:19:40 > 0:19:45six metres for Ivona Dadic, as we come towards the end of this first
0:19:45 > 0:19:50round of jumping. Only three jumps for each competitor, and then just
0:19:50 > 0:19:58the 800 metres to come.Just the celebrating -- decelerating into the
0:19:58 > 0:20:03board. She got an indoor best of 6.21 and she has jumped 6.22 this
0:20:03 > 0:20:09year.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12year. 6.29 for Ivona Dadic, that's good, that's solid, it keeps her
0:20:12 > 0:20:22pursuit of a medal on course.
0:20:23 > 0:20:25Katarina Johnson-Thompson will feel, I imagine, pretty good about that
0:20:25 > 0:20:30opening jump. What's it like, when you see the white flag and you know
0:20:30 > 0:20:37you've nailed a solid jump which has given you a good amount of points?
0:20:37 > 0:20:40Gilles Villeneuve couldn't. Absolutely, and looking at Kat's
0:20:40 > 0:20:47jump, technically very sound. If she has more pressure, she will propel
0:20:47 > 0:20:50herself to a bigger one. She has a lovely upright position through the
0:20:50 > 0:20:55air, no rotation. If she really put some mustard on that, she will go
0:20:55 > 0:21:01far today, I think.
0:21:01 > 0:21:05far today, I think. What are you seeing from the other girls,
0:21:05 > 0:21:11Rodriguez and Dadic? Rodriguez getting a red flag, so she will feel
0:21:11 > 0:21:15a bit on edge, knowing she's got to pull one out of the bag. And you
0:21:15 > 0:21:22said Dadic was a bit on her toes. She's coming in in a plant or flex
0:21:22 > 0:21:26position, breaking before she has a chance to take off, so she's
0:21:26 > 0:21:30elongate in her foot and not getting underneath herself, not striking
0:21:30 > 0:21:34underneath her hips to give herself a catalyst to really push off the
0:21:34 > 0:21:38board and jump far, and it is because they are forcing it more,
0:21:38 > 0:21:42desperate to get a distance out there to get close to Kat, and
0:21:42 > 0:21:44because of that they are making mistakes they shouldn't make. The
0:21:44 > 0:21:50other risk, with your foot out, is there is a chance of injury.Let's
0:21:50 > 0:21:53get back out there but for the second heat of the women's 60
0:21:53 > 0:21:59hurdles. This second heat, fairly
0:21:59 > 0:22:04straightforward qualification, but what a moment for Megan Marrs, a
0:22:04 > 0:22:06city of Lisbon athlete, Loughborough student at the moment, and a long
0:22:06 > 0:22:12time since somebody from Northern Ireland represented the British team
0:22:12 > 0:22:17in the championships. In fact, her mum competed in the European indoors
0:22:17 > 0:22:20in 1988 she will be up against Christina Manning, one of the
0:22:20 > 0:22:25favourites in this event. We've just seen Sharika Nelvis looking calm and
0:22:25 > 0:22:33straightforward qualifications, 7.90 seven. An experienced Austrian,
0:22:33 > 0:22:37Beate Schrott. There she is, she has set six personal best in my
0:22:37 > 0:22:41reckoning this season, huge improvement, she didn't like the
0:22:41 > 0:22:45qualifying time set by British athletics, which I'll explain in a
0:22:45 > 0:22:51minute. Andrea Grant Jovic, Isabelle Pedersen Norway. A former junior
0:22:51 > 0:22:59champion. Yes Megan Marrs, the IAAF, once countries have put their
0:22:59 > 0:23:03entries in, have a chance to draw further down the entries list, and
0:23:03 > 0:23:12they sent individual invites. She is a pay against one of the best in the
0:23:12 > 0:23:17world, Christina Manning. -- she is up against. She missed out on a
0:23:17 > 0:23:22medal last year at the World Championships. Not by much. And
0:23:22 > 0:23:27Kendra Harrison is yet to go, from the USA, with three great 60-metre
0:23:27 > 0:23:42hurdlers. Four to go through.
0:23:44 > 0:23:48Christina Manning got out well. It is Christina Manning and Isabelle
0:23:48 > 0:23:53Pedersen.
0:23:55 > 0:23:56Pedersen. Andrea Ivancevic taking third. I reckon Megan Marrs might
0:23:56 > 0:24:03have got this fifth or sixth. Colin is screwing his face up, going, you
0:24:03 > 0:24:11got that wrong, Steve. We'll sort it out. We are heading for a USA one,
0:24:11 > 0:24:16two, three, we?Possibly, but I'm sure that others will have something
0:24:16 > 0:24:23to say about that. It seems to be a good place for her. But Pedersen
0:24:23 > 0:24:28from Denmark, we know her quality. We've seen her many times on the
0:24:28 > 0:24:34circuit, but now another opportunity. Christina Manning from
0:24:34 > 0:24:39the United States, she got the invite here because she won the
0:24:39 > 0:24:44indoor tour, she just missed out on automatic selection for the US
0:24:44 > 0:24:47championships, but she finished third in that, incredibly fast time.
0:24:47 > 0:24:52For me, she is a person you need to watch out for, because she is more
0:24:52 > 0:24:59than capable of producing a red-hot performance.Eline Berings got the
0:24:59 > 0:25:03fourth spot. Looking at Megan Marrs, a huge moment for her, she couldn't
0:25:03 > 0:25:07have begun the season thinking she'd compete at the world indoor
0:25:07 > 0:25:10championships.And massive moment, up against people she's watched on
0:25:10 > 0:25:15the screen for many years, and she can't believe she is warming up
0:25:15 > 0:25:17alongside them. A good opportunity to experience what it's like. She
0:25:17 > 0:25:27ended up in six, in 8.28. She will go home and be happy with it.
0:25:27 > 0:25:32Christina Manning, watching her back, you seemed to slow down at the
0:25:32 > 0:25:40end so comfortably through.Yeah, I just want to get everything going on
0:25:40 > 0:25:43and that's what I did.You had a massive performance in last weekend
0:25:43 > 0:25:48to secure your place through a wild card. What's it's been like
0:25:48 > 0:25:54preparing at the last minute and getting ready for this? We've been
0:25:54 > 0:25:56preparing for this all year, you know. It doesn't really feel
0:25:56 > 0:26:02last-minute. When I didn't make the US team, I was like, I'm going to
0:26:02 > 0:26:05win Glasgow and make that team, so I've been preparing since the
0:26:05 > 0:26:11beginning of the season. The US team is so incredible, you came third in
0:26:11 > 0:26:14the trials with an incredible trial and still didn't make the team. How
0:26:14 > 0:26:19much is that helped to push your performances, knowing that your
0:26:19 > 0:26:23compatriots are so good?It pushes me every time because you want to be
0:26:23 > 0:26:29the best, and I am competing against the best. I go out there I go after
0:26:29 > 0:26:33it every time.Fantastic. Thank you for speaking to us. Of luck later.
0:26:33 > 0:26:41Thank you. -- best of luck. A nice performance, and what a way
0:26:41 > 0:26:45to keep the draft of your neck, earrings with pom-poms on pigs
0:26:45 > 0:26:52Christina Manning looking good, and it personal best from Pedersen. --
0:26:52 > 0:26:58earrings with pom-poms on them. Christina Manning looking good.
0:27:03 > 0:27:06The US champion, Erica Bougard, has been pushed out of the medals, the
0:27:06 > 0:27:12US champion, but there is a foul in the first round of the long jump. We
0:27:12 > 0:27:14are into the second round, Erica Bougard looking to make amends. Big
0:27:14 > 0:27:21acceleration. It's around the six-metre mark. It's a good job.
0:27:21 > 0:27:27Valid jump, at least. She accelerated into the board, like you
0:27:27 > 0:27:32should, but she didn't really get across it. Her hips went back early,
0:27:32 > 0:27:37the head comes down, and she comes in for an early landing. More like a
0:27:37 > 0:27:40forward somersault. You need to keep your body upright and fly deeper
0:27:40 > 0:27:48into the pit.A bit forced, still in fourth place.
0:27:49 > 0:27:52Somewhere in Texas or California, there is a conveyor belt, and
0:27:52 > 0:27:58American women hurdlers just come off it. You are such good hurdlers.
0:27:58 > 0:28:03There is always somebody else coming to bolster it. You've got a world
0:28:03 > 0:28:09record-holder, and it's not enough, it could be two, three.Bidgood, and
0:28:09 > 0:28:12you are right, there are so many hurdlers, and it's not it's an event
0:28:12 > 0:28:19everybody does. Not everybody does it. It's a difficult event. There is
0:28:19 > 0:28:25just a tradition over the years. You think back, Gail Devers, amazing
0:28:25 > 0:28:30hurdler, and it's always been that way but it's very competitive at the
0:28:30 > 0:28:36NCAA level, and I think they push one another, and it breeds a
0:28:36 > 0:28:38fantastic group of athletes. Christina Manning the latest one of
0:28:38 > 0:28:45those. Let's get back out to the long jump with Steve Backley.
0:28:45 > 0:28:50Katarina Johnson-Thompson really solid in the first round, 6.50, and
0:28:50 > 0:28:56the good news for her is that the competitors are faltering.I think
0:28:56 > 0:28:59you are right. She has cemented herself in that position. I'm not
0:28:59 > 0:29:04sure the opposition can respond. Rodriguez's best indoors is 6.29.
0:29:04 > 0:29:11It's up to Kat to express herself and get the biggest other she can
0:29:11 > 0:29:17going into the 800 metres so she doesn't have to run too fast.A new
0:29:17 > 0:29:24role this year, 30 seconds for the horizontal jumps and throws, and her
0:29:24 > 0:29:29clock has begun. She has to start the run up before it gets to zero.
0:29:29 > 0:29:34Johnson Thompson, round two, to back up that 6.50 first round ever.
0:29:34 > 0:29:40Cheering from the crowd. Thumbs up, Tony.I think it's exactly the same.
0:29:40 > 0:29:45She might have a few more centimetres. Drifted off. She puts
0:29:45 > 0:29:49her foot across herself, but she is controlling the runway. It isn't
0:29:49 > 0:30:00overextending. Drifting a bit, but that's fine.
0:30:00 > 0:30:04that's fine. 6.43 for Kat, backing it up. No improvement, but she
0:30:04 > 0:30:08stayed out in front. The only athlete who can really threaten is
0:30:08 > 0:30:18Rodriguez. But has that foul...? She looks a bit anxious, knowing that
0:30:18 > 0:30:25she really needs to get one in here to take the pressure off.
0:30:28 > 0:30:36That is not enough. It is a legal jump, which maintains her movement
0:30:36 > 0:30:41towards the podium. However, she overrotates and doesn't get across
0:30:41 > 0:30:46the board.
0:30:47 > 0:30:55the board.She has a lifetime best of 6.29m. This is 6.15, pushes her
0:30:55 > 0:31:03into third place. Going well for Johnson-Thompson.Onto the third
0:31:03 > 0:31:11heat in the 60m hurdles, which includes another athlete from Great
0:31:11 > 0:31:23Britain, who goes in lane one.
0:31:43 > 0:31:48Marilyn Nwawulor got the qualifying time in Belgium last month. She is a
0:31:48 > 0:31:53multi-eventer. We have been talking about the crossover from heptathlon
0:31:53 > 0:32:00and pentathlon to hurdling. Alongside her, the Romanian. Talking
0:32:00 > 0:32:05about who might challenge the Americans, the German athlete is in
0:32:05 > 0:32:11lane three. This is the third of five heats in the women's 60m
0:32:11 > 0:32:22hurdles. Cleanly away.
0:32:22 > 0:32:30hurdles. Cleanly away. Charlton of the Bahamas goes swiftly.
0:32:30 > 0:32:34the Bahamas goes swiftly. She was flying in lane eight. A good run by
0:32:34 > 0:32:40Visser as well, but it was Charlton who sneaked it on the line. We will
0:32:40 > 0:32:47keep an eye on the time of Marilyn Nwawulor in lane one. I think
0:32:47 > 0:32:57Charlton has taken that. A good race and a season's best time for
0:32:57 > 0:33:03Charlton. Someone is very excited in the crowd. But a good run from
0:33:03 > 0:33:11Charlton.Yeah, you're right. In the middle, you can sneak away without
0:33:11 > 0:33:18anyone noticing you, and that is what she did. When you are as
0:33:18 > 0:33:22competent a hurdle as that, there is no need to panic. Just do your
0:33:22 > 0:33:28stuff. And that is exactly what she did McCain through comfortably to
0:33:28 > 0:33:34take the second position.Looking at Marilyn Nwawulor, she was given a
0:33:34 > 0:33:39time of 8.22, so the two who are not the automatic qualifiers here are
0:33:39 > 0:33:45the two fastest losers at the moment. So it is not a bad run.
0:33:45 > 0:33:52Yeah, it's clean and aggressive.
0:33:52 > 0:33:58Yeah, it's clean and aggressive. It was a good, solid run.
0:34:18 > 0:34:21We are getting towards the end of the second round in this long jump
0:34:21 > 0:34:33pentathlon. Ivona Dadic, 6.29 in the first round.Ran much better than
0:34:33 > 0:34:38her first round. She gets a white flag, but she is bending on the
0:34:38 > 0:34:44board. As she puts her foot in, the need buckle is a bit. She turns her
0:34:44 > 0:34:48head back in take-off, so you are not carrying the speed across the
0:34:48 > 0:34:52board, which is what you need to do. Ivona Dadic at the moment is the one
0:34:52 > 0:34:59who can really challenge.
0:34:59 > 0:35:05who can really challenge. But she is not a better 800m runner.
0:35:13 > 0:35:24A clumsy effort for Nana Djimou. Not really getting the speed.
0:35:24 > 0:35:25really getting the speed. She doesn't really complete the
0:35:25 > 0:35:30take-off.
0:35:46 > 0:35:50Harrison is going in the next heat in the 60m hurdles, another
0:35:50 > 0:35:53phenomenal pergola. Michael, the world-record holder has had a mixed
0:35:53 > 0:35:57bag. She didn't qualify for Rio and didn't make it to the top three in
0:35:57 > 0:36:02US trials. She finished outside the medals in London as well. She to
0:36:02 > 0:36:08feel that her time, she is one of those people who you would not
0:36:08 > 0:36:13begrudge being on the top of the heap here.Right, but just because
0:36:13 > 0:36:16you are the world record-holder, doesn't mean that you are an amazing
0:36:16 > 0:36:20competitor. That is what she had to work on. She had to work on her
0:36:20 > 0:36:23competitiveness and the ability to deliver those impressive
0:36:23 > 0:36:27performances that she is capable of when it counts, knowing that she is
0:36:27 > 0:36:31the favourite. That seems to have been a problem for her over the last
0:36:31 > 0:36:36few years. It will be interesting to see what she does here. This is an
0:36:36 > 0:36:40opportunity for her to get a global medal. Interesting to say that,
0:36:40 > 0:36:43given that she is the world record-holder, with no global
0:36:43 > 0:36:47metals. It is not only in the UK that there is that problem. We have
0:36:47 > 0:36:53that problem in the US as well.
0:36:59 > 0:37:02It is interesting that you say that, because there is room for so many
0:37:02 > 0:37:05things to go wrong with the hurdles that if you can't make it through
0:37:05 > 0:37:12the rounds, you will be punished at some point. You will be, but that is
0:37:12 > 0:37:16not something you would expect from Harrison here. She is such a
0:37:16 > 0:37:20beautiful hurdler to watch, very aggressive and dynamic. It is just
0:37:20 > 0:37:25that mental chink in her armour which will be the difference at the
0:37:25 > 0:37:30final, should be get there with her. That will be the front and whether
0:37:30 > 0:37:37she gets that global title or not. Let's see how the journey goes Cram.
0:37:37 > 0:37:41So, Harrison is in the middle in lane four. They are not losing lane
0:37:41 > 0:37:45one indeed heats. It is fairly straightforward for the better
0:37:45 > 0:37:59athletes. They want to make sure nothing untoward happens.
0:38:15 > 0:38:19This is Kozak of Hungary. The 21-year-old is having a good season.
0:38:19 > 0:38:30Then Harrison.
0:38:34 > 0:38:39Ziketh from Ivory Coast. Plotitsyna is another veteran, fourth in the
0:38:39 > 0:38:47European indoor Championships last year.
0:38:47 > 0:38:56year. Lindsey Lindley from Nigeria and there is Angela Whyte.
0:38:56 > 0:38:58and there is Angela Whyte. Megan Marrs only just missed out as the
0:38:58 > 0:39:03fastest loser.
0:39:13 > 0:39:27This and one more heat to come. Sally Pearson is in the next one.
0:39:28 > 0:39:34We have already had five women under eight seconds. My start from
0:39:34 > 0:39:49Harrison. Look at the speed, this is going to be super quick. Whoa, 7.78!
0:39:49 > 0:39:55An absolute field between her and the rest. We have had the others
0:39:55 > 0:39:59easing back and taking it easy going through. Kendra Harrison, showing
0:39:59 > 0:40:03what she is capable of. That was very quick indeed. She just didn't
0:40:03 > 0:40:11slow down, did she? Like she had a bus to catch or something. Maybe
0:40:11 > 0:40:17want to get back to the hotel. There was certainly an exceptional
0:40:17 > 0:40:21performance. Let's have a look again. Steve, you will remember that
0:40:21 > 0:40:24there is not alone in the race for these women today, so she can
0:40:24 > 0:40:28happily blast her way through, have a feel of the track, see if she's
0:40:28 > 0:40:34feeling comfortable. Just practise everything, there is nothing wrong
0:40:34 > 0:40:38with that. Really strong and aggressive out of the blocks. If you
0:40:38 > 0:40:41remember London last year, she smashed into the first barrier and
0:40:41 > 0:40:46that caused her a problem early on. So she's brushing off all the
0:40:46 > 0:40:49cobwebs, getting the journey out of the way, making sure her technique
0:40:49 > 0:40:54is solid as she prepares for the following rounds. They will be the
0:40:54 > 0:41:00crucial ones.Kendra, that was a massive performance, particularly
0:41:00 > 0:41:05for a semifinal.Yeah, the goal was to come out and run each run as if
0:41:05 > 0:41:10it's the final. You have massive competition from your own
0:41:10 > 0:41:14compatriots in the USA alone. What sort of signal do you think that
0:41:14 > 0:41:18lays down?I am sure they are not worried about me. But we are going
0:41:18 > 0:41:25to put on a great show and there will be faster times to come.Do you
0:41:25 > 0:41:34think we are going to see a 1-2-3? With us Americans, I think so.Well,
0:41:34 > 0:41:44two things to talk about in the result. One is that 7.77. And the
0:41:44 > 0:41:49fastest losers will go through at the moment. It means that Nwawulor
0:41:49 > 0:41:55is still hanging on by her fingertips. But there is one more
0:41:55 > 0:42:02heat to come. Katarina Johnson-Thompson has a really
0:42:02 > 0:42:05healthy buffer at the end of this long jump going into the last event
0:42:05 > 0:42:10of the pentathlon, get hundred metres. We have been doing the maths
0:42:10 > 0:42:15with Tony Minnich yellow. We think she has a lead of around what would
0:42:15 > 0:42:19equate to six metres, four seconds over Dadic in the 800m. But she does
0:42:19 > 0:42:27have one more jump.
0:42:27 > 0:42:32have one more jump. So that is a four second buffer we are talking
0:42:32 > 0:42:38about in the 800m. But she can extend that
0:42:38 > 0:42:39about in the 800m. But she can extend that. There is good
0:42:39 > 0:42:45camaraderie between the multi-eventer 's. Johnson-Thompson
0:42:45 > 0:42:54is capable of putting it out of reach here. Last jump.
0:42:55 > 0:42:59reach here. Last jump. That looks much better. Seemed to carry the
0:42:59 > 0:43:03speed across the board there. Fingers crossed. She's not happy
0:43:03 > 0:43:11with it, but I figured more points, and that is what you want.
0:43:25 > 0:43:30So no change. However, this athlete can make a huge difference here,
0:43:30 > 0:43:37because Dadic is currently in second place, with Rodriguez in the bronze
0:43:37 > 0:43:42medal position. But she can close it down. At the moment, she is 100
0:43:42 > 0:43:51points behind Kat Johnson-Thompson. And that is worth about six seconds
0:43:51 > 0:44:01over 800m. So if you can visualise that, what is that?About 40 metres.
0:44:06 > 0:44:12Now, the official has stopped her so that we can do the presentations for
0:44:12 > 0:44:17the 60m hurdles. She was ready to go, and now she has to wait. That is
0:44:17 > 0:44:23not fair. It is not fair if you are composed and ready to go.That is
0:44:23 > 0:44:28major champs. That is what you have got to put up with. So Rodriguez had
0:44:28 > 0:44:34to compose herself here, stay focused. Until that code is removed,
0:44:34 > 0:44:40the clock will not start.
0:44:42 > 0:44:44the clock will not start.Ah, the cone has been removed and the
0:44:44 > 0:44:50sweeping is complete. The runway is clear. Rodriguez of Cuba, currently
0:44:50 > 0:44:56in bronze medal position.
0:44:59 > 0:45:02in bronze medal position. She is looking to improve on 6.15... There
0:45:02 > 0:45:10is a red flag. We shouldn't celebrate, but she did slow down
0:45:10 > 0:45:15into the board and went straight up into the air, trying really hard. I
0:45:15 > 0:45:20think she knows.
0:45:21 > 0:45:26She put her foot into the plasticine. One more athlete to go,
0:45:26 > 0:45:34Dadic. Johnson Thompson has really controlled this competition. Maybe
0:45:34 > 0:45:38not jumped as far as she would have hoped, but she has performed
0:45:38 > 0:45:42superbly and put the pressure on, and the pressure has shown.
0:45:42 > 0:45:48Rodriguez faltering slightly. So it's only really Dadic who can close
0:45:48 > 0:45:54that gap of four seconds or so, the equivalent in the 800 metres. Last
0:45:54 > 0:46:01chance for Dadic to move closer to Katarina Johnson-Thompson.She
0:46:01 > 0:46:06throws her head back again. Is it a bit further, looking at that? White
0:46:06 > 0:46:14flag.Identical jobs in the first two rounds, both 6.29. It is not
0:46:14 > 0:46:23same again, is it?Looking at her face, it might be a bit better.
0:46:23 > 0:46:276.40. She's closed the gap. We will update you with the equivalent
0:46:27 > 0:46:32points, but it's a season best for Dadic.It makes the difference about
0:46:32 > 0:46:38two seconds. However, Katarina Johnson-Thompson is a better
0:46:38 > 0:46:46800-metre runner by about two to three seconds. Ladies and gentlemen,
0:46:46 > 0:46:52stay in your seats! It's going to be good. The athletes for the next heat
0:46:52 > 0:46:56in the women's 60 metres hurdles have had their introduction. Sally
0:46:56 > 0:47:01Pearson, a big roar from the crowd a moment ago. World champion, former
0:47:01 > 0:47:07Olympic champion, she has won this title before. It's all about the
0:47:07 > 0:47:10Gold Coast, the Commonwealth Games for her this year. She could
0:47:10 > 0:47:17challenge the Americans this year. So to record low of Germany. --
0:47:17 > 0:47:21Ricarda Lobe.
0:47:27 > 0:47:34You'd expect as well, with a quality
0:47:35 > 0:47:43line-up, that one of the fastest losers' lead might be under threat.
0:47:43 > 0:47:51A good start by Pearson. Already a long way clear of the rest. Amusan
0:47:51 > 0:47:56going strongly, and she speaks it at the line. She takes it from Sally
0:47:56 > 0:48:02Pearson, 7.95. A good run by the Nigerian, just 20, but she has run
0:48:02 > 0:48:07so well on the American college scene. A student at the University
0:48:07 > 0:48:11of Texas, and Amusan, not an American, but she runs and she has
0:48:11 > 0:48:15that fierce competition in the United States, and a very good run
0:48:15 > 0:48:20to take it just ahead Sally Pearson. It was an interesting race all
0:48:20 > 0:48:27around. Sally blasted out of the blocks, as we normally see her do,
0:48:27 > 0:48:31and I expected her to ease away from the rest of the field, but Amusan
0:48:31 > 0:48:36came through strong, a lovely, nice and rangy athlete. Have a look at
0:48:36 > 0:48:40Sally Pearson, right in the centre. Amusan to the right, our left. Sally
0:48:40 > 0:48:47working hard. Look how mice and controlled Amusan is. She rolled off
0:48:47 > 0:48:52these barriers well. She hits the ground and charges the line. Does
0:48:52 > 0:48:57enough to take victory. No sign of any easing off from Sally Pearson,
0:48:57 > 0:49:03so take an fair square by Amusan. The focus for Sally Pearson is very
0:49:03 > 0:49:06much on the Gold Coast, and it's all about the Commonwealth Games for
0:49:06 > 0:49:11her, she lives and trains there, but slightly concerning signs for her
0:49:11 > 0:49:16chances it, overhauled by Amusan in that way will stopinteresting how
0:49:16 > 0:49:19that happened. Tomorrow will be be telling day for them. They have to
0:49:19 > 0:49:30step up.Looking of the others, a talented Belarussian athlete, Alina
0:49:30 > 0:49:35Talay, she came through well.I think she had a problem with the
0:49:35 > 0:49:39second barrier, going a bit higher than necessarily, and then she
0:49:39 > 0:49:42snapped herself in, got back into the focus. How much running she has
0:49:42 > 0:49:50left, tomorrow will be key.Yes, the semifinals around about this time
0:49:50 > 0:49:54tomorrow, they kick off the evening session, and those four will be
0:49:54 > 0:50:08through, Amusan, Pearson, Alina Talay and Karolina Koleczek.
0:50:09 > 0:50:13So, Katarina Johnson-Thompson did exactly what she needed to do in
0:50:13 > 0:50:17that long jump competition, and the way she approached her first job was
0:50:17 > 0:50:23so crucial to get herself a clean jump, to get herself a good
0:50:23 > 0:50:25distance, Denise, but then to compose herself throughout and set
0:50:25 > 0:50:30that standard to the rest of the field. You felt there was a
0:50:30 > 0:50:31nervousness, especially with Rodriguez.She needed to establish
0:50:31 > 0:50:36herself and say, listen, you all know this is my best event, but I'm
0:50:36 > 0:50:42here to do business, and she did it. 6.50, hoping for a bit more, and she
0:50:42 > 0:50:45seemed to want to push it a bit, but we talked about how consistent she
0:50:45 > 0:50:52has been for those three jumps. It's really good. And should put pressure
0:50:52 > 0:50:56on the other athletes. But Dadic, who Tony tipped as one of his
0:50:56 > 0:51:01favourites, you can see why she is there and fighting for a medal. She
0:51:01 > 0:51:05is so consistent and able to pull things out of the bag when you least
0:51:05 > 0:51:09expect her to.A season 's best is what you want in those moments, and
0:51:09 > 0:51:13she is one of Tony's stars of the future across the championships, and
0:51:13 > 0:51:18it looks like she has a great competitive head. We knew it
0:51:18 > 0:51:22wouldn't be a strong bed for Rodriguez, not the strongest.No,
0:51:22 > 0:51:26but strange because the Cubans are usually very good long jumpers, so
0:51:26 > 0:51:30interesting that she struggles with it, but I think they could all look
0:51:30 > 0:51:36at Kat and see how to structure a runway in order to make those jobs
0:51:36 > 0:51:39consistent, because Kat was building through the run, getting up to speed
0:51:39 > 0:51:43when she needed to, taking the ball towards the end in order to get the
0:51:43 > 0:51:47same point on the board. The others worry that all over the place, quite
0:51:47 > 0:51:51a lot of fouls, people struggling with the boards, as people do here,
0:51:51 > 0:51:56and I think a lot of good work on that runway.Bizarrely, they had two
0:51:56 > 0:52:05identical jumps, both of them. This was her third jump. Look at this.
0:52:05 > 0:52:07was her third jump. Look at this.At this point, Kat is in a scenario
0:52:07 > 0:52:11where she can let it go a bit, and Tony noticed it, pushing a bit
0:52:11 > 0:52:16harder on the runway. Look at the way she's landed in the sand. You
0:52:16 > 0:52:20can read an awful lot from landing in the sand, it's like reading tea
0:52:20 > 0:52:25leaves in cups. You can see where people are going wrong. Her slight,
0:52:25 > 0:52:29what you want to do is your heels come together, and your bum goes
0:52:29 > 0:52:34past and it's quite similar, but quite a difference with Kat. Her
0:52:34 > 0:52:37right leg seems to be sweeping earlier, and she is losing a bit on
0:52:37 > 0:52:41that. She needs to look at that and, if she can get them all nailed and
0:52:41 > 0:52:46even, it's a big amount of distance she can gain.And these are
0:52:46 > 0:52:52heptathlete. You are talking about finite details as a jumper. But
0:52:52 > 0:52:56juggling all five events, and generally if seven, it's about
0:52:56 > 0:53:02division of your time. You want to spend more time working on your
0:53:02 > 0:53:05runway, because that delivers consistency, but the menu shy, you
0:53:05 > 0:53:09don't have time to do it.I was thinking about that, within the
0:53:09 > 0:53:13pentathlon, that would seem to be the most difficult event, the long
0:53:13 > 0:53:17jump, because there is so much you can get wrong with the run-up, and
0:53:17 > 0:53:20we saw that today, and in the heptathlon Kat has got it wrong
0:53:20 > 0:53:27before. Maybe there is a case for doing work there, not so much so you
0:53:27 > 0:53:32can get more distant but so you can be more consistent, because it seems
0:53:32 > 0:53:37like it pushes people out of the medals. You are talking about when
0:53:37 > 0:53:42Kat has got it wrong, and we are talking about a centimetre, you
0:53:42 > 0:53:45know? For consistency, what she normally has on the runway, she has
0:53:45 > 0:53:48been a world civil medallist, so she knows to long jump. It might have
0:53:48 > 0:53:54been that little bit of detail. -- she has been a world
0:53:54 > 0:53:59silver-medallist.She is a good long jumper, so unwell with -- on one
0:53:59 > 0:54:02level you can break it down more than with some of the other events,
0:54:02 > 0:54:06because she is naturally good. I said earlier, with some of the right
0:54:06 > 0:54:10things, she could be a seven-metre jumper, but she would need to put
0:54:10 > 0:54:15more time into it.Talking about the age-old dilemma with Kat, do you
0:54:15 > 0:54:21work more on the pros, where you are weaker, or do you push elsewhere?
0:54:21 > 0:54:24Today, she's done a really good throw for her in the shot put, which
0:54:24 > 0:54:30has given her a platform to go into the long jump. It's a fine balancing
0:54:30 > 0:54:35act, and the detail, you could dissect it all day, but what matters
0:54:35 > 0:54:38is, can you come to major championships and be competitive and
0:54:38 > 0:54:41minimise the mistakes, and she is proving that it's coming together.
0:54:41 > 0:54:46Let's have a look at the standings. Heading into that 800 metres, coming
0:54:46 > 0:54:52up at about 8:15pm. She is in the lead. This isn't reading we've had
0:54:52 > 0:54:55before in the final event of a global event for Katarina
0:54:55 > 0:55:04Johnson-Thompson. There she is, 33 points ahead of Dadic, and she is a
0:55:04 > 0:55:07quicker 800-metre runner and Dadic, in front of a home crowd... What
0:55:07 > 0:55:14could possibly go wrong? She is fit enough. She has got good endurance.
0:55:14 > 0:55:18This crowd will be roaring her home. The only thing that could go wrong
0:55:18 > 0:55:22is that she goes too hard, but I doubt she will do that. She's got a
0:55:22 > 0:55:27good head on her in terms of pace judgment, and I expect her to be
0:55:27 > 0:55:32running through this.She has to enjoy it, doesn't she?I'd like to
0:55:32 > 0:55:37enjoy the celebrating after she's one it. She has been very focused,
0:55:37 > 0:55:40poised, and that has worked for her, so I'd like to see her continue to
0:55:40 > 0:55:45do that, and not enjoyed this too soon. Just finish it up and then
0:55:45 > 0:55:52enjoy celebrating a medal.And it is for her, let's not forget, five
0:55:52 > 0:55:57events in Monday, it's not what these women are used to.They are
0:55:57 > 0:56:00not used to it but in some ways I think they find it easier, but what
0:56:00 > 0:56:06is tiring is the warming up again, the sore legs, moving into the next
0:56:06 > 0:56:10day and having to warm up, so getting it done, there is some
0:56:10 > 0:56:14beauty in that.I don't think you give the body long enough to realise
0:56:14 > 0:56:18how hard it is working. It's like heavy training in the winter, it's
0:56:18 > 0:56:21the next day when you feel awful. During it, you think I'll get
0:56:21 > 0:56:26another job. By the time they wake up tomorrow, they will be stiff and
0:56:26 > 0:56:29struggling to walk around, I imagine. My body could never put up
0:56:29 > 0:56:36with that, because it's so much pressure for so many events, and
0:56:36 > 0:56:40it's very impressive.Let's head to our number cruncher in the
0:56:40 > 0:56:43commentary box. You have been working out what she's got to do in
0:56:43 > 0:56:48the 800 metres.It's interesting, because there are a couple of
0:56:48 > 0:56:54dynamics. Katarina Johnson-Thompson as, looking at my piece of paper, I
0:56:54 > 0:57:00apologise, a two second lead over Dadic, 33 points. Stay with me on
0:57:00 > 0:57:11this, Dadic has a 65 point lead over Rodriguez. However, that relates to
0:57:11 > 0:57:16four seconds. The difference between Dadic and Rodriguez's PBs in the 800
0:57:16 > 0:57:21is about three and a half, so if I am Rodriguez, I think, I can still
0:57:21 > 0:57:24get a silver medal, so I will run hard, and that changes the dynamic
0:57:24 > 0:57:29of the race. It will not be a cruise around, Rodriguez will probably be
0:57:29 > 0:57:33pushing for a silver, and that will push it on. The scoreboard is up,
0:57:33 > 0:57:39and you can see the point margins between them.Thank you, Tony, we
0:57:39 > 0:57:43can always rely on you for the numbers. I think you are going to
0:57:43 > 0:57:46give Rachel Riley a run for her money! Next up on the track, the
0:57:46 > 0:57:52semifinals of the women's 60 metres and Asha Philip is in the one, which
0:57:52 > 0:57:58is loaded with talent.Loaded with talent, but the objective is clear.
0:57:58 > 0:58:02She said she's come to these championships for a medal, anything
0:58:02 > 0:58:05less is a disappointment for her. She will have the support of the
0:58:05 > 0:58:12home crowd. Birmingham is like home for her. Game open.Looking at the
0:58:12 > 0:58:16names in this, people would think, Olympic champions, world champions,
0:58:16 > 0:58:24but Asha is a fantastic start. She's built for this event. She has Dafne
0:58:24 > 0:58:29Schippers on the outside, Murielle Ahoure on the inside. But she has to
0:58:29 > 0:58:34be careful and patient run her best race in order to get into the next
0:58:34 > 0:58:42round and that final.Steve Cram has this semi for you.
0:58:43 > 0:58:48Yes, we've got a world leader, and Olympic champion 100 metres, a world
0:58:48 > 0:58:52champion, Dafne Schippers, 200 meteors, and the European indoor
0:58:52 > 0:58:58champion in Asha Philip, not to mention the fact that Ahoure is a
0:58:58 > 0:59:03two-time world silver-medallist. Not your average semifinal! This is
0:59:03 > 0:59:07tough for Asha Philip. I saw her earlier and she said, if I've got to
0:59:07 > 0:59:13beat some people, I've got to run fast, and she's right. There two
0:59:13 > 0:59:19fastest loser spots available if you don't make it into the best top two,
0:59:19 > 0:59:26and he was Kelly-Ann Baptiste of Trinidad and Tobago. The big names,
0:59:26 > 0:59:28Murielle Ahoure in lane three, and in superb form this year, unbeaten
0:59:28 > 0:59:35on the circuit. Asha Philip, British champion and European champion from
0:59:35 > 0:59:44last year. Can she hang on to the big names around her? Dafne
0:59:44 > 0:59:48Schippers, how good is she going to be here? Maybe Asha Philip can get
0:59:48 > 0:59:55ahead of Dafne Schippers. Looked pretty good to me in qualification.
0:59:55 > 0:59:59Elaine Thompson was taking it easy as well, the Olympic champion. Not
0:59:59 > 1:00:03such a good 2017 for her, disappointment in London, she wasn't
1:00:03 > 1:00:11well. This young lady can start very quickly, Xiaojing Liang, just 20.
1:00:11 > 1:00:16And what are we going to see from Javianne Oliver? The world lead, got
1:00:16 > 1:00:20left in the box this. If she runs like that, she will have no chance
1:00:20 > 1:00:30of getting through. It's not just those four, and there is a big
1:00:30 > 1:00:34danger if she decides to wake up after this morning. That is why she
1:00:34 > 1:00:39is in lane eight. Although all of the attention in the middle lanes
1:00:39 > 1:00:47here, watch out for Oliver.
1:00:49 > 1:00:52Let's put it this way, if you don't finish in the top four, you don't
1:00:52 > 1:00:57have any chance of getting through, because there are only two fastest
1:00:57 > 1:01:01loser spots. The first of three semifinals. Asha Philip in lane
1:01:01 > 1:01:08four.
1:01:10 > 1:01:15Thompson Murielle Ahoure gets a cracking start. Ahoure wins it from
1:01:15 > 1:01:22Thompson. Then Oliver and then Dafne Schippers. Really good performance
1:01:22 > 1:01:27from Ahoure. I think Asha Philip will have to accept that she got a
1:01:27 > 1:01:29terrible draw in terms of qualification. We will see what time
1:01:29 > 1:01:38she ran. It's been taken down to 7.01, a world lead for the IED.
1:01:38 > 1:01:43Superb start as ever from Ahoure. She desperately wants to win gold
1:01:43 > 1:01:49this time. Elaine Thompson and Schippers were not too far behind.
1:01:49 > 1:01:54But Ahoure was excellent. She so was. I was watching how she was
1:01:54 > 1:01:59going to be in the blocks. What they're going to be any anxiety?
1:01:59 > 1:02:05This was such a loaded semifinal. But they waited and there was a lot
1:02:05 > 1:02:10of discipline. The gun goes an Ahoure explodes out of the blocks,
1:02:10 > 1:02:14drives really hard in those yellow shorts. Asha Philip did well to hang
1:02:14 > 1:02:22on in there originally. But when the really strong players come in, Dafne
1:02:22 > 1:02:25Schippers pulls Elaine Thompson through. Elaine then steps up
1:02:25 > 1:02:33another gear. What a semifinal. And we still have a final to go at the
1:02:33 > 1:02:38end of the evening. Asha Philip 's will be disappointed that she was
1:02:38 > 1:02:43drawn in this one, but that is the nature of the beast. Her time is not
1:02:43 > 1:02:48bad.
1:02:48 > 1:02:51bad. That would not be far off winning some of the other
1:02:51 > 1:02:56semifinals.
1:03:05 > 1:03:10Asha drives hard, works well. But now she will already feel Dafne
1:03:10 > 1:03:16Schippers alongside her. Ahoure has already gone. Now she has two stay
1:03:16 > 1:03:27relaxed and work hard. Tough semifinal, but she did her best.
1:03:27 > 1:03:31Knowing how competitive Asha is, she will think, I run OK, but if I could
1:03:31 > 1:03:39have run a 7.10, she would have run her season's best. She could have
1:03:39 > 1:03:42just gone a bit quicker and I have been enough. But that was a stacked
1:03:42 > 1:03:52semifinal.
1:04:00 > 1:04:04First of all, we have to look at this from a British perspective
1:04:04 > 1:04:07because as European indoor champion, Asha Philip would have expected to
1:04:07 > 1:04:11get herself into that final.
1:04:11 > 1:04:16When you look at the athletes who have run seasons bests and they are
1:04:16 > 1:04:20in the top three, she had to be putting herself amongst her season's
1:04:20 > 1:04:24best and putting herself up there to get through.Edge was only 100th of
1:04:24 > 1:04:28a second off her season's best, so you can't ask for much more. I think
1:04:28 > 1:04:32she got a bit high out of the blocks, like a bound. But that is
1:04:32 > 1:04:42fractional. We knew Ahoure would be out there. Look up Schippers.
1:04:45 > 1:04:46out there. Look up Schippers. I don't think Asha was going to be
1:04:46 > 1:04:59able to do much more than this. She was in the worst heat you could get.
1:05:00 > 1:05:07Oliver, who is incredible, came fourth in this race. I don't think
1:05:07 > 1:05:12she could have done much more.I think she didn't run her best rate.
1:05:12 > 1:05:16She has been consistent all season. Where are talking about fractions of
1:05:16 > 1:05:23a second here, but she will be disappointed with that.
1:05:23 > 1:05:27disappointed with that. But if it's not her best race by hundreds of a
1:05:27 > 1:05:30second. Majka I am looking at the execution here and it is almost
1:05:30 > 1:05:35identical to this morning, which is what you want. I don't think there
1:05:35 > 1:05:38is much more she was going to be able to do. If you could fault
1:05:38 > 1:05:42anything with that race, it is not the execution. Maybe there was a bit
1:05:42 > 1:05:47more speed she could have got in the lead up, maybe a bit more speed
1:05:47 > 1:05:50endurance from her training. But I don't think you can fault much
1:05:50 > 1:05:55there. It was a bad draw for her. She is obviously disappointed,
1:05:55 > 1:05:59because she has just walked through the interview area and hasn't
1:05:59 > 1:06:02stopped. We will hopefully get a word with her later. But if you were
1:06:02 > 1:06:06listening this morning, she had her interview where she said she expects
1:06:06 > 1:06:09to be among the medals and she would be very disappointed if she isn't,
1:06:09 > 1:06:13so I am sure she will be. Let's get back down for the next of these
1:06:13 > 1:06:22semifinals. Andrew Cotter is all over this one.
1:06:22 > 1:06:29Look at some of the names here in comparison.
1:06:43 > 1:06:48What a run that was from Ahoure. What can another one from Cote
1:06:48 > 1:06:57d'Ivoire do?
1:06:57 > 1:07:04d'Ivoire do? There is destiny Carter. Didn't look too impressive
1:07:04 > 1:07:09in the first round.
1:07:11 > 1:07:17in the first round. Swoboda is an amazing talent. I would be very
1:07:17 > 1:07:23surprised if over the next two semifinals, anyone beats those
1:07:23 > 1:07:30fastest losers' times of Dafne Schippers and JVM Oliver. I would
1:07:30 > 1:07:35really expect us to go through as the two fastest losers. That was an
1:07:35 > 1:07:42incredibly quick first semifinal. What can they do in the second? Ta
1:07:42 > 1:07:49Lou has been unbeaten this year since the meeting in Berlin.
1:08:02 > 1:08:10Just two to go through automatically.
1:08:10 > 1:08:16automatically. Second semifinal in the women's 60m.
1:08:19 > 1:08:28the women's 60m. A good start by Pinto. Ta Lou leaving the rest. It
1:08:28 > 1:08:36is close for second place, but Ta Lou takes it 7.09. She wins in the
1:08:36 > 1:08:42same time as Dafne Schippers, in third place in the first semifinal
1:08:42 > 1:08:53by comparison. That was a hard run by Ta Lou. She has been rounded down
1:08:53 > 1:08:58to 7.08, the winning time. She will have to step it up because Ahoure in
1:08:58 > 1:09:01the first semifinal looked very quick indeed. But it is another
1:09:01 > 1:09:11victory.Very strong run from Ta Lou. And we expect that from her.
1:09:11 > 1:09:18She's really good out of the blocks. Worked hard, drove all the way. When
1:09:18 > 1:09:23it comes to the semifinal stage, there is no messing about. There is
1:09:23 > 1:09:31so much talent alongside you that you have to work. A strong time. I
1:09:31 > 1:09:37will be interested to see what the other times are.It was tight
1:09:37 > 1:09:46between Ahye and Pinto. I think Ahye might have sneaked it on the line.
1:09:46 > 1:09:54Burchell ran strongly, but she has been given it. She takes second with
1:09:54 > 1:09:597.15, a slower time than Asha Philip in the first heat. It is just the
1:09:59 > 1:10:11luck of the draw for Asha Philip.
1:10:11 > 1:10:16Well, that endorses everything we were saying about that first
1:10:16 > 1:10:19semifinal with those times. If you look at the difference between first
1:10:19 > 1:10:25and second place, it is going to be tough for Asha to take.It really
1:10:25 > 1:10:29years. It was unbelievable how stacked that field was. That is just
1:10:29 > 1:10:33the luck of the draw. We can't go on about it, it is what it is and she
1:10:33 > 1:10:42will be very disappointed. We felt this was an opportunity for her.She
1:10:42 > 1:10:45came into these championships with the right attitude, saying exactly
1:10:45 > 1:10:48what you would want someone who has been around for a long time to say,
1:10:48 > 1:10:54wanting to deliver on the big stage. It is tough, but she has to bounce
1:10:54 > 1:10:59back. She has the Commonwealth Games, so she needs to move on.She
1:10:59 > 1:11:03will find it difficult as well because if you get yourself into the
1:11:03 > 1:11:06final, anything can happen. That is what will hurt her looking at what
1:11:06 > 1:11:12happened.
1:11:12 > 1:11:15happened.That time for Ta Lou puts her right amongst the Schippers and
1:11:15 > 1:11:20Elaine Thompson. She is going to be in the mix in the final. It will be
1:11:20 > 1:11:25a great final. Ta Lou has been running well for the last couple of
1:11:25 > 1:11:31years. She has been very consistent. She has a cracking start every time.
1:11:31 > 1:11:35And she is a championship performer. Every championship, she gives the
1:11:35 > 1:11:49best performance of the year. She built into it and get a great race.
1:11:49 > 1:11:53Not as relaxed in the face as I would like to see, but it is
1:11:53 > 1:11:58obviously working well for her. Let's just get back outside because
1:11:58 > 1:12:01the athletes in that race have been looking up at the big screen,
1:12:01 > 1:12:04waiting for the results, which still hadn't come in a few seconds ago.
1:12:04 > 1:12:10Andrew Cotter, what is going on? They are still having a look at it.
1:12:10 > 1:12:14We have got confirmation of the result, but it has gone down to
1:12:14 > 1:12:18thousandths of a second. We said it was close between Burchell and Ahye
1:12:18 > 1:12:24and they have been given exactly the same time. Steve Cram, there seemed
1:12:24 > 1:12:30to be a lack of lanes as well?We haven't got nine lanes, so either
1:12:30 > 1:12:34they don't take an extra fastest loser, which is probably what they
1:12:34 > 1:12:39will have to do. That reminds me of this morning. Ahye was thinking,
1:12:39 > 1:12:43brilliant, I'm in Kombucha to she didn't see her name, in the results
1:12:43 > 1:12:54for a long time. -- she would have been thinking she was in. Here,
1:12:54 > 1:12:58there should be one less fastest loser. I think that is how they will
1:12:58 > 1:13:03do it.So we have one more won to come. Sadly, we can't have nine
1:13:03 > 1:13:15lanes in the final, so these two are dead heating for the top two.
1:13:16 > 1:13:19dead heating for the top two. Just Steve, going back to Barcelona in
1:13:19 > 1:13:241995, looking at the final, there was a British representative who
1:13:24 > 1:13:28lost a place in the final on the toss of a coin. He and his rival had
1:13:28 > 1:13:33the exact same time but there was only room for one of them in the
1:13:33 > 1:13:37final, so it might come down to the toss of a coin.Except that they
1:13:37 > 1:13:41would have had the same time as fastest losers. Here, they could
1:13:41 > 1:13:44just take the ninth fastest person out. Let's find out in a bit,
1:13:44 > 1:13:49anyway. Bianca Williams made it through as fastest loser to the
1:13:49 > 1:13:59semifinals.
1:14:03 > 1:14:08Koh-i-Noor Horne, the South African record-holder at this distance. She
1:14:08 > 1:14:18looked a little ragged this morning.
1:14:22 > 1:14:28The revelation was this young lady, Zahi from France, who looked very
1:14:28 > 1:14:36quick indeed.
1:14:36 > 1:14:39quick indeed. Did we miss somebody? Lane seven is not there. That should
1:14:39 > 1:14:49have been Evans.
1:14:54 > 1:15:02We have seen Asha Philip not going to.
1:15:13 > 1:15:22Mujinga Kambundji got into a rut, into the same routine. Zahi in six.
1:15:29 > 1:15:37Zahi didn't get quite a good start as previously. Carina Horn came
1:15:37 > 1:15:40through late for a third but it would be good enough to qualify
1:15:40 > 1:15:45unless she's very quick switch with that winning time of 7.10, I don't
1:15:45 > 1:15:52think she will be. The question for me will tidy this up is Dafne
1:15:52 > 1:15:57Schippers is the slowest of the two fastest losers. Are they going to
1:15:57 > 1:16:02take Dafne Schippers out of the final? Because we've got
1:16:02 > 1:16:05theoretically nine qualifiers. Colin Jackson, and so.No! That's what I'm
1:16:05 > 1:16:13saying. It's an interesting dilemma. Solution?They don't have long to
1:16:13 > 1:16:18work it out! They've got blue paint. They could quickly put another
1:16:18 > 1:16:24laying down.
1:16:24 > 1:16:30laying down.Kambundji change in her coach, going back to the old
1:16:30 > 1:16:33environment, she's certainly improved. I think she ran former
1:16:33 > 1:16:39controlled and she did in the heat this morning. -- far more control.
1:16:39 > 1:16:44Good times, 7.10, very controlled. I don't thing was panic that any
1:16:44 > 1:16:47point. Didn't get the best of starts but everything she did she did well.
1:16:47 > 1:16:52The hall itself do the rest of the field and she's switching off and
1:16:52 > 1:16:56cruising through. I don't see she pressurised herself at all. Bianca
1:16:56 > 1:17:00is on the right of our screen. Not smooth out of the blocks. I've seen
1:17:00 > 1:17:06him more aggressive and focused than that. She said it was a surprise for
1:17:06 > 1:17:09her to be as you can understand that's the reason why. She's been
1:17:09 > 1:17:12rewarded with a personal best so I think should be pretty pleased with
1:17:12 > 1:17:17that. She did well to make it through as fastest loser. It bodes
1:17:17 > 1:17:24well for outdoor.Always. To get in our female team in the four by one,
1:17:24 > 1:17:29you have to prove you are in great shape and running personal bests.
1:17:29 > 1:17:31Lets the tidy this up, this heat.
1:17:37 > 1:17:41Carolle Zahi was slower than Asha Philip so that go through.
1:17:41 > 1:17:49Technically we have nine qualifiers for the final. Tuned!Anyone got a
1:17:49 > 1:17:54coin? I think if you are the slowest of the fastest losers, even if your
1:17:54 > 1:17:59Dafne Schippers, you're going to feel a bit nervous right now.Yeah,
1:17:59 > 1:18:04and it doesn't matter who you are. If you are slowest of the fastest
1:18:04 > 1:18:09losers and there isn't a lane for you you have to watch it.I think
1:18:09 > 1:18:12you're combing through the real bottle now trying to find out
1:18:12 > 1:18:16exactly how this works to find out what your fate is. If you are the
1:18:16 > 1:18:19slowest they will eliminate one, which would seem to be the fair
1:18:19 > 1:18:25thing to do if you're going to how only have eight lanes. It is what it
1:18:25 > 1:18:28is.They lose Dafne Schippers from the final and it tells you what
1:18:28 > 1:18:32we've been saying all day that this is really wide open and this is very
1:18:32 > 1:18:36much a kind of even spread amongst these women. The times were very
1:18:36 > 1:18:41close.Not only does it tell you it's very open, it's also very fast.
1:18:41 > 1:18:49It's fast athletes that...Sorry to interrupt you. Which is hearing a
1:18:49 > 1:18:56bit of white smoke has come through! We have confirmation that actually
1:18:56 > 1:19:01Schippers was the fastest losers so she is through. And Oliver is the
1:19:01 > 1:19:10one in danger. She is the fastest woman out of the United States team.
1:19:10 > 1:19:13And came into the Championship as the fastest in the world but didn't
1:19:13 > 1:19:17perform well this morning, she was horrible out of the blocks and then
1:19:17 > 1:19:22she ran better in the semifinal but still not enough for an automatic
1:19:22 > 1:19:26qualifier, which she should have been having run 7.02 earlier this
1:19:26 > 1:19:32year. That would be on her if she is out. Maybe they will paint another
1:19:32 > 1:19:35laying!Do you think, if you're being really brutal, but the slowest
1:19:35 > 1:19:44person goes?It's not in the rules. Exactly.
1:19:47 > 1:19:50Exactly. It's given to finishing one, two in your heat.Would you do
1:19:50 > 1:19:58that, though?No, I... I think it's fair the way we think that it's
1:19:58 > 1:20:02going to work out. I think the person who was one of the fastest
1:20:02 > 1:20:07losers doesn't go. The slowest fastest loser doesn't get in.We
1:20:07 > 1:20:12said earlier the US is so good at producing hurdlers. There generally
1:20:12 > 1:20:16always have someone close to dominating or dominating so to have
1:20:16 > 1:20:21a winning 60-metre final without anyone from the US would be a shock.
1:20:21 > 1:20:24You would expect with the strength and depth about there would always
1:20:24 > 1:20:28be at least one who would make the final. Not so wish for the indoor 60
1:20:28 > 1:20:36metres. A lot of sprinters for the 100 metres that will contest the 100
1:20:36 > 1:20:42metres.Fastest in the world this year, you'd think she'd be in the
1:20:42 > 1:20:46final.You think that she would be in the final but what you're saying
1:20:46 > 1:20:51is she's the only one that even... Even in contention to be in the
1:20:51 > 1:20:55final. The others didn't even make it to the final. But think about who
1:20:55 > 1:21:00we have at home who are 100 metre sprinters, if this was the outdoor
1:21:00 > 1:21:06World Championships and the women's 100 metres, and no US
1:21:06 > 1:21:10representation, that would have been shocking. The queue has been taken
1:21:10 > 1:21:13from her name so she has no longer qualify for the final. Nine became
1:21:13 > 1:21:17eight, as the Spice Girls once signed and that is the line-up for
1:21:17 > 1:21:22the final which will take place this evening just after 9:30pm. It'll be
1:21:22 > 1:21:27the last event on the track. Pick your winner from that slots, then!
1:21:27 > 1:21:38At this point, array array. The only thing she would have to look for is
1:21:38 > 1:21:42if she gets the start and runs like she did in the prelims because she
1:21:42 > 1:21:45did get to the semifinals. Not looking quite as good as in the
1:21:45 > 1:21:49preliminaries but she looked amazing.I'm glad we cleared that up
1:21:49 > 1:21:55eventually. Let's get out onto the track because Elliot Giles is out
1:21:55 > 1:21:59which means its 800 metre time. This is an event where you got to get
1:21:59 > 1:22:05your tactics right. Content Aird you certainly have to do. It adds to
1:22:05 > 1:22:09that one it's four lapse for 800 metres because it becomes a bit more
1:22:09 > 1:22:15furious and chaotic. Alvaro De Arriba, bronze in Belgrade last
1:22:15 > 1:22:21year. Drew Windle finished second at the US indoors behind Donavan
1:22:21 > 1:22:26Brazier. A strong finish there, came storming through to take second.
1:22:26 > 1:22:31Andreas Kramer likes to run outdoors, so I'm sure he'll adopt
1:22:31 > 1:22:37that if he can hear. European under 23 champion last year, still 20.
1:22:37 > 1:22:40Elliot Giles, a hometown boy with a hometown welcome.
1:22:40 > 1:22:44CHEERING Indoor champion. Recently added that
1:22:44 > 1:22:53if his outdoor title. On the inside in lane two, Mohammed Hamada
1:22:53 > 1:23:00Mohamed. Elliot Giles carrying British hopes here. Kyle Langford
1:23:00 > 1:23:07deciding not to run the world indoors and Giles with the
1:23:07 > 1:23:14supporting goodwill of most of the crowd but with that comes pressure.
1:23:14 > 1:23:17The first of effectively two semifinals in the men's 800. Limited
1:23:17 > 1:23:26field with very top qualifying standards set by the IAAF.
1:23:28 > 1:23:34standards set by the IAAF. Perhaps a better chance for Elliott Giles.
1:23:34 > 1:23:39Andreas Kramer likes to different run. Only two go through
1:23:39 > 1:23:42automatically.Two go through automatically and then the two
1:23:42 > 1:23:48fastest losers. You have to think that is what Mohamed is doing. It is
1:23:48 > 1:23:53shocking in a world indoor Championships we only have ten men
1:23:53 > 1:23:57in the 800 metres. It's amazing. Giles is being stretched at the
1:23:57 > 1:24:01moment, the whole field is stretching out with Mohamed. They
1:24:01 > 1:24:06will start to come back towards Giles and Drew Windle will certainly
1:24:06 > 1:24:11finish strongly. Don't rule him out and don't rule out Alvaro De Arriba
1:24:11 > 1:24:17who is running an experienced race here.
1:24:20 > 1:24:23here. Two go through automatically. Don't rule out Drew Windle. You
1:24:23 > 1:24:28close very fast in Albuquerque to grab the qualifying spot and he is
1:24:28 > 1:24:33capable of doing it again today. Elliot Giles has played well so far
1:24:33 > 1:24:41and he's got something left.Elliot Giles eases his way past.
1:24:45 > 1:24:49Elliot Giles is looking up at the big screen and being carried on by
1:24:49 > 1:24:53the support of the home crowd.
1:25:00 > 1:25:11Giles just hangs on for second. De Arriba wins. A quick time indoors
1:25:11 > 1:25:14and Elliot Giles goes through as an automatic qualifier and Drew Windle
1:25:14 > 1:25:18will have to wait and see but it was a quick race.It was. You have to
1:25:18 > 1:25:23think that Drew Windle probably will go through anyway. I'd like to think
1:25:23 > 1:25:26that Elliot Giles was easing down. He was checking the screen down the
1:25:26 > 1:25:30back straight and looked very comfortable at that stage. To ease
1:25:30 > 1:25:32down when you know people are breathing down job back and the
1:25:32 > 1:25:37final is something you should be in. He's done well, managed to get the
1:25:37 > 1:25:43qualifying spot. .You can see how happy Elliot Giles is. He knows he's
1:25:43 > 1:25:50an automatic qualifier but we can see his time and he knows it's good.
1:25:50 > 1:25:571:45.46. That puts him third on the UK all-time list behind Sebastian
1:25:57 > 1:26:01Coe. Very quick indeed from Elliot Giles. That's the way to move
1:26:01 > 1:26:06through to the final tomorrow night. This is effectively a straight
1:26:06 > 1:26:11semifinal. Not many athletes running here in the men's 800 metres. Tough
1:26:11 > 1:26:14qualifying standard. The great race but Elliot Giles.And he'll be
1:26:14 > 1:26:18pleased with that. A big boost. He probably want to say thank you to
1:26:18 > 1:26:24the pacemaker.Mohamed was effectively the pacemaker. Look at
1:26:24 > 1:26:31De Arriba in the Spanish vest. He eventually won and that's the beauty
1:26:31 > 1:26:35of the 800 metres. They were all coming back, all starting to fade
1:26:35 > 1:26:39back towards him and it looks like he's picking up the pace. He's not
1:26:39 > 1:26:42the rest are fading. Giles able to look at the screen and see where he
1:26:42 > 1:26:46was.At this stage, Elliot Giles is doing everything right. He's looking
1:26:46 > 1:26:50at the screen, looking he was coming behind him so he knows where the
1:26:50 > 1:26:56danger is coming from. He knew that De Arriba was coming through. You
1:26:56 > 1:26:59can see his shoulder starting to go up but he is maintaining his form,
1:26:59 > 1:27:03keeping running hard through to the line. The only fault he made was
1:27:03 > 1:27:07moving slightly wide and believing that space for Drew Windle to make a
1:27:07 > 1:27:14last ditch for the line.800 metres and Elliot Giles was able to hold
1:27:14 > 1:27:20on. Drew Windle may well go through as one of the two fastest losers
1:27:20 > 1:27:26over these two effective semifinals but that was a very good run from De
1:27:26 > 1:27:30Arriba, the Spaniard. So too from Elliot Giles. That time, third on
1:27:30 > 1:27:39the UK all-time list.
1:27:39 > 1:27:45the UK all-time list. 1:45.46 to automatically qualify for the final.
1:27:45 > 1:27:50Giles, personal-best there, through to the final. Happy with your
1:27:50 > 1:27:54performance?Yeah, I'd just seen the playback. I shouldn't have eased up
1:27:54 > 1:28:00because they could have got me. I think next time, just run over the
1:28:00 > 1:28:05line because I could have easily not been in the final then. Two seconds
1:28:05 > 1:28:11off your personal-best.I think my PB doesn't really affect me but
1:28:11 > 1:28:16again it's a PB soap not bad.What if I told you that is the third
1:28:16 > 1:28:24fastest time for British runner in history indoors?Well, we better get
1:28:24 > 1:28:30a bit quicker, haven't we? To more places to take. You've heard the
1:28:30 > 1:28:35crowd tonight, which was that pushing you?Just hearing the
1:28:35 > 1:28:39accident was great. I'm based down south so it's great to be around
1:28:39 > 1:28:46home.What do you make of your chances for the final? We get a game
1:28:46 > 1:28:51plan. The first job was the heats and then I got second.Best of luck,
1:28:51 > 1:29:01rest up.Easing down, he said. 1:45.46. Great run from the Spaniard
1:29:01 > 1:29:04to take automatic qualifying along with Elliot Giles. Drew Windle may
1:29:04 > 1:29:12well be good enough to see him through. All of his answers, Elliot
1:29:12 > 1:29:15Giles, would seem to indicate he's a man who is very confident of his
1:29:15 > 1:29:20form. He expects a lot more from himself. When he said, I should have
1:29:20 > 1:29:23them through the line, not eased up, tells you what kind of shape using.
1:29:23 > 1:29:29Tells you his his mentality and about his trajectory. He's really
1:29:29 > 1:29:33come into his own the last couple of years. We've been on the team with
1:29:33 > 1:29:37him. He's a great person to be around and really applying himself
1:29:37 > 1:29:41to his training and that the benefit. It's really interesting. He
1:29:41 > 1:29:45was in my apartment block in the Olympics in 2016 and you could see
1:29:45 > 1:29:48the determination of everything he was doing. He knows and he knew even
1:29:48 > 1:29:51then that he had something special in him. This could be that
1:29:51 > 1:29:56opportunity. The world stage, to go out and show that elevates himself
1:29:56 > 1:30:03going into the outdoors which is the most important thing. To go out and
1:30:03 > 1:30:07really push it. I spent time with him, in certain athletes you see
1:30:07 > 1:30:11this in a focus. It's not be, it's just an inner knowing that they have
1:30:11 > 1:30:17the ability to do it and I think we've been talking about for a long
1:30:17 > 1:30:20time, British athletes not just being happy with making up the
1:30:20 > 1:30:23numbers, going out and waving to the crowd and going home. With Elliot
1:30:23 > 1:30:27numbers, going out and waving to the crowd and going home. With Elliot,
1:30:27 > 1:30:33if you go out there and do the third fastest time of all time, and you
1:30:33 > 1:30:36say, I'll have to read it quickly. That's a good approach.You like
1:30:36 > 1:30:42that?I like it but it works. That's why I like it. It works and I wonder
1:30:42 > 1:30:46if he's one of those athletes, given what Greg has just enlightened us
1:30:46 > 1:30:49about, if he was one of those athletes to sit back and watch some
1:30:49 > 1:30:53of the other British athletes and say, that doesn't work. It doesn't
1:30:53 > 1:30:56work to just be out there and say, I'm going to have fun with this and
1:30:56 > 1:31:02enjoy being here. The content to come and be on the team. I need to
1:31:02 > 1:31:07expect more from myself and knowing that if you prepare your -- compay
1:31:07 > 1:31:10yourself to the great athletes around the world, athletes that are
1:31:10 > 1:31:13making the finals, those athletes that are consistent, those last
1:31:13 > 1:31:19night who in the high jump, the fact that they were opposing, there were
1:31:19 > 1:31:22lines on the track because now it's a different configuration, they
1:31:22 > 1:31:25still perform. That's what you want to aspire to. It seems like he is
1:31:25 > 1:31:28one of those.
1:31:28 > 1:31:35He's working out about training, new training environments, going to
1:31:35 > 1:31:37different countries, acclimatising, making sure he's ready and I think
1:31:37 > 1:31:41he's applying himself and that's what you want to see from young
1:31:41 > 1:31:43athletes coming through.Steve Cram will be impressed by that
1:31:43 > 1:31:49performance and in the next semi-, Steve Cram, you've got a man in Adam
1:31:49 > 1:31:53Kszczot that's going to be one of those pushing for the medals,
1:31:53 > 1:31:57something Elliot Giles is going to have his eye on.Absolutely, I think
1:31:57 > 1:32:01Elliott hasn't got a better chance, I will reiterate having seen him in
1:32:01 > 1:32:05training camps over the last couple of years, he's very focused but he's
1:32:05 > 1:32:09a massive talent, one of the most exciting athletes we've got and I
1:32:09 > 1:32:14don't think you've even tapped into some of that talent yet. You just
1:32:14 > 1:32:19saw the confidence he has. This man has plenty as well, Brazier of
1:32:19 > 1:32:22United States, a front running man. He'll be pleased in some respects
1:32:22 > 1:32:34his team-mate Emmanuel Korir didn't make it because Crusat is good,
1:32:34 > 1:32:38Giles is good, he can cope with the pace and it will depend on the
1:32:38 > 1:32:43final. We'll find out who will join him of course here. What sort of
1:32:43 > 1:32:47race is run. If Brazier frontrunners this, he's only 20, and he's not
1:32:47 > 1:32:57frightened, this man here, you might remember in Portland how he shocked
1:32:58 > 1:33:01us all, nobody would have picked him out beforehand. He hasn't been
1:33:01 > 1:33:04running anything like that this year. We'll see how he goes. This
1:33:04 > 1:33:12should be about Kszczot and Brazier, Smaili on the outside as well,
1:33:12 > 1:33:18there's a lot of new young talent. Such a shame Korir isn't here but it
1:33:18 > 1:33:26opens the door for others. Suso will do nothing but watch and wait.
1:33:26 > 1:33:30Brazier likes to get out there in front but he might think that's what
1:33:30 > 1:33:34they're expecting me to do and he just manages not to step on the
1:33:34 > 1:33:40line. Smaili takes advantage. Brazier is happy to sit towards the
1:33:40 > 1:33:47back, with Kszczot.Brazier has taken a risk with the decisions
1:33:47 > 1:33:52judges have been taking so far today, Adam Kszczot is where we
1:33:52 > 1:33:56expect to see him, in his element racing indoors. He makes the move is
1:33:56 > 1:34:00only when he needs to unzip uses as little energy as possible until he
1:34:00 > 1:34:05needs to and he is unbeaten so far this year.I really like this
1:34:05 > 1:34:09Brazier kid. We were talking about Elliott and Kyle Langford as young
1:34:09 > 1:34:13talents, but this kid is only 20 and he's a lovely looking manner. He's
1:34:13 > 1:34:19got a great action. He's got pace. He's not frightened either. It is
1:34:19 > 1:34:223.26 not fast at all, we are heading for something slower than the first
1:34:22 > 1:34:26one so you don't want to be a fastest loser here. Kszczot will
1:34:26 > 1:34:31have to wake up bit and Brazier will have to be aware of the kickers. You
1:34:31 > 1:34:35can see Adam Kszczot focusing on where he needs to be an starting to
1:34:35 > 1:34:38gather himself ready to react. Brazier is poised in the perfect
1:34:38 > 1:34:45position. Now here comes Kszczot. It's the one thing Brazier doesn't
1:34:45 > 1:34:49have an awful lot of experience as, this fast change of pace here and
1:34:49 > 1:34:54he's having to hold off the Spaniard, who has moved into second
1:34:54 > 1:34:57place and Brazier is struggling for pace at the moment. Smaili coming
1:34:57 > 1:35:00back into this, the American struggling. Scissor where he likes
1:35:00 > 1:35:06to be Konko, Chuck -- controlling it off the bend. Scissor still has work
1:35:06 > 1:35:12to do here and on the line, Smaili just sit on the inside. Well, if
1:35:12 > 1:35:19you'd said to the United States team that led to top Mac men would not be
1:35:19 > 1:35:24in the final, Korir because he didn't get his Visa in New York and
1:35:24 > 1:35:29Brazier because he let others dictate, why do you go to world
1:35:29 > 1:35:32champs and not run your own race? You should have gone out there, made
1:35:32 > 1:35:36it quick, run at the front, scissor would have kicked but it might have
1:35:36 > 1:35:39taken the others out of the equation. Another one of the medal
1:35:39 > 1:35:46prospects has gone, Kszczot wins it and Smaili joins them.Smaili judged
1:35:46 > 1:35:54that very well in the closing stages. Brazier, maybe he thought
1:35:54 > 1:35:57the work was done for him but he wasn't going fast enough and it
1:35:57 > 1:36:01wasn't doing enough damage to everybody else. Scissor, when he
1:36:01 > 1:36:05goes, he has that change of pace that does so much more damage than
1:36:05 > 1:36:09he is able to do outdoors. People are able to react outdoors but
1:36:09 > 1:36:12indoors he gets the jump on the rest of the field and he's playing with
1:36:12 > 1:36:15them here, down the back straight he's looking up but he's got another
1:36:15 > 1:36:18gear and all the way down the home straight he's still looking around
1:36:18 > 1:36:25because he's got that gear ready to go. He tucks backing behind Adam
1:36:25 > 1:36:33Kszczot and Smaili moves through, senses the gap opened up.
1:36:33 > 1:36:35senses the gap opened up. He's so experienced, Adam, and knows they
1:36:35 > 1:36:38are both sides and he's toying with the man still has that bit extra to
1:36:38 > 1:36:43stay ahead will stopyeah, I will correct myself, Korea, who lives and
1:36:43 > 1:36:52trains in America is of course Kenyan. -- Emmanuel Kipkurui Korir.
1:36:52 > 1:36:56Windle goes to as a fastest loser and Brazier will be disqualified, I
1:36:56 > 1:37:00thought he was running on the line away from the start. There is his
1:37:00 > 1:37:05foot on the line. I thought he did it round the bend anyway. Anyway,
1:37:05 > 1:37:09he's probably going to say thank you for disqualifying me, because it
1:37:09 > 1:37:13won't come that I was fifth in the semi or the heat. They might have
1:37:13 > 1:37:16another look at Smaili down the home straight because he looked very
1:37:16 > 1:37:20close to the line, certainly as he was trying to duck through on the
1:37:20 > 1:37:29inside.OK, keep an eye out for that, so Adam Kszczot through OK,
1:37:29 > 1:37:37Smaili joining him as a qualifier but the others were too slow.
1:37:39 > 1:37:45A great performers, are you happy, they chased you to the line?I am
1:37:45 > 1:37:51happy. Only the first 200 was really quick. I attacked 250 to go, as
1:37:51 > 1:37:57usual in this season, so I'm really, really happy. It seems like the
1:37:57 > 1:38:02fastest guys, although they are in the final right now, so it's easier
1:38:02 > 1:38:08for tomorrow.Of course you've got bronze and silver. You are really
1:38:08 > 1:38:12looking for the gold.Hopefully, hopefully tomorrow I will run for
1:38:12 > 1:38:16gold.Your performance there, when that bell went, you absolutely
1:38:16 > 1:38:20rocketed. You knew you had that well within your sights.I knew I am able
1:38:20 > 1:38:28to accelerate and pass everyone on this short straight, and I did it.
1:38:28 > 1:38:36Especially I was especially happy because I was in the right timing. I
1:38:36 > 1:38:41made a big surprise for the fastest guys. I saw how they looked behind
1:38:41 > 1:38:48their backs and immediately after that I hit, so it was great.Thank
1:38:48 > 1:38:55you very much for speaking tours. Thank you. We've had a great night
1:38:55 > 1:38:59so far, but there's low more -- loads more to come. Katarina
1:38:59 > 1:39:02Johnson-Thompson running for gold in the final event of the pentathlon
1:39:02 > 1:39:07and after her bronze last night, Laura Muir is back in action in the
1:39:07 > 1:39:13heats of the 1500 metres. The men's long jump finalist sure to
1:39:13 > 1:39:19entertain. Luvo Manyonga hoping to add to his outdoor world title from
1:39:19 > 1:39:26London. And some of the fastest woman in the world will contest the
1:39:26 > 1:39:33final of a loaded with men's 60 metres. -- women's 60 metres. Let's
1:39:33 > 1:39:37talk more about the men's long jump final, a man who knows what it's
1:39:37 > 1:39:43like to be in the final of the world long jump final, a global long jump
1:39:43 > 1:39:47final, Greg Rutherford. We were rather you were out there obviously,
1:39:47 > 1:39:51you didn't feel after Glasgow you are quite in the shape you wanted to
1:39:51 > 1:39:55be to push it amongst the medals, so who do you expect to be up there on
1:39:55 > 1:39:59the rest room at the end of the night?I've been casting Mike Beady
1:39:59 > 1:40:03Eye and watching them go through their runway practices and both Luvo
1:40:03 > 1:40:06Manyonga and Jarrion Lawson have been smack bang on the board
1:40:06 > 1:40:08perfectly, so they've given themselves a great opportunity to
1:40:08 > 1:40:14get on the board and maximise chances. Luvo popped off the board
1:40:14 > 1:40:22and I thought he looks on today. We could see an 8.5 plus me to jump,
1:40:22 > 1:40:25but if you look how close the borders here we'll see him slide
1:40:25 > 1:40:28through and he'll hit the back edge of the pit which is always quite
1:40:28 > 1:40:32scary for the jumpers when you are in the air as well but it makes
1:40:32 > 1:40:36quite an interesting competition. It is going to be an interesting
1:40:36 > 1:40:39competition and indoors you explain the difference as well for athletes,
1:40:39 > 1:40:42it's not just a transference of skill, you've got a lot of other
1:40:42 > 1:40:46things to consider, the speed of the runway, the fact there's no wind.
1:40:46 > 1:40:49You were talking about the women and the pentathlon earlier on, so remind
1:40:49 > 1:40:55us again why it's so different in a long jump?First of all you don't
1:40:55 > 1:41:00have wind, it's zero zero no matter what, so you don't get the bonus
1:41:00 > 1:41:04behind you which is a plus wind, or a negative wind which is not good
1:41:04 > 1:41:07for you. Jumping on board can really suit some people and be awful for
1:41:07 > 1:41:11others. Heavier jumpers and I gestured towards myself, you can
1:41:11 > 1:41:16struggle at times because you can misjudge the take-off. You feel the
1:41:16 > 1:41:21ground beneath you give way. Someone like Luvo Manyonga, Jarrion Lawson,
1:41:21 > 1:41:25quite soft off the board, this could suit them. It's a fast runway and
1:41:25 > 1:41:29it's perfect for jumping big.The light show has started because this
1:41:29 > 1:41:33is the way we introduce our finalists here, the pyrotechnics
1:41:33 > 1:41:38will get going in just a moment as the men are presented to the arena,
1:41:38 > 1:41:42which there are a few empty seats but I'm impressed, with the amount
1:41:42 > 1:41:44of snow that's been falling in Birmingham today that the crowds
1:41:44 > 1:41:47have come out tonight to see these finals, these great athletics so far
1:41:47 > 1:41:53and this meant's final could be something very special indeed --
1:41:53 > 1:41:58this men's final.They've just trusted as the men's high jump,
1:41:58 > 1:42:01which is quite interesting! They can go relatively high, but the idea is
1:42:01 > 1:42:09to go longer in the long jump. They have got long jump, they are not
1:42:09 > 1:42:13doubling up!We are going to see something special from warlord two
1:42:13 > 1:42:19of these guys. Here's the European champion as well, so it will be
1:42:19 > 1:42:23exciting.Tell us about Jarrion Lawson. In the end the AA in the US
1:42:23 > 1:42:28he set the world alight, exceptionally fast and good long
1:42:28 > 1:42:33jump and he's a speed based long jump, similar to myself. He has the
1:42:33 > 1:42:37ability to run superfast times. If he was to focus on the sprints,
1:42:37 > 1:42:45which maybe he should do, he could run regular - tens, for sure. There
1:42:45 > 1:42:49are so many good athletes, you have to get busted up for different
1:42:49 > 1:42:53events. Remember being in Florida one time seeing a load of guys at
1:42:53 > 1:42:59the Florida State who
1:42:59 > 1:43:00the Florida State who would-be British champions, they were not
1:43:00 > 1:43:05quick enough even for their collegiate team. Jarrion Lawson has
1:43:05 > 1:43:09everything, he could be one of the greatest, I think. In the last few
1:43:09 > 1:43:13major championships we've seen some real quality US long jump is. Just
1:43:13 > 1:43:18not quite potentially pushing themselves through, we saw the
1:43:18 > 1:43:21brilliant competition in Beijing at the World Championships, which Greg
1:43:21 > 1:43:25reigns supreme at, but they haven't quite mixed it. Then you get the
1:43:25 > 1:43:30likes of Luvo Manyonga coming along and taking another crown away from
1:43:30 > 1:43:35the great long jump is.They are always in there for the medals and
1:43:35 > 1:43:41Jarrion Lawson, silver last year, I think he wants to upgrade that, but
1:43:41 > 1:43:44Luvo Manyonga has been very consistent and has made for really
1:43:44 > 1:43:51good long jump viewing over the last few years. Manyonga, in terms of his
1:43:51 > 1:43:59story, he's got an amazing story and he -- we hear so much about there
1:43:59 > 1:44:04rather than personalities. We have to work on that and work with these
1:44:04 > 1:44:06athletes.Sorry to interrupt you, I think these long jump is doing the
1:44:06 > 1:44:10best entrance so far of any of the finals we've seen in terms of
1:44:10 > 1:44:15putting the show on!They are known for their style, right, Greg?I
1:44:15 > 1:44:19think they are happy to be on the TV for a little while, it's a new
1:44:19 > 1:44:23experience for them! LAUGHTER
1:44:23 > 1:44:26They are having fun. I mix it up with these guys all the time,
1:44:26 > 1:44:29there's a lot of big personalities down there. Some of us get on very
1:44:29 > 1:44:33well and we have a good laugh, others are bit insular and within
1:44:33 > 1:44:36themselves, but generally the young jumpers, like the pole vault is and
1:44:36 > 1:44:39high jumpers, they are not out there enough for people to know it I
1:44:39 > 1:44:45think.Manyonga has been public about serving a suspension for a
1:44:45 > 1:44:48recreational drug that he admitted to using and he's using his platform
1:44:48 > 1:44:52as a champion to speak to people about recreational drugs and the
1:44:52 > 1:44:56dangers. It's a fantastic story and he's an amazing athlete. That's a
1:44:56 > 1:45:01personality.
1:45:01 > 1:45:05personality. He's a great guy. Incredibly difficult background in
1:45:05 > 1:45:08South Africa, not many of us could relate to.He was a drug addict. To
1:45:08 > 1:45:11come through that and do what he's doing now is testament to his
1:45:11 > 1:45:18character, wonderful. Next up, the women's 1500 metres,
1:45:18 > 1:45:24featuring Laura Muir.Muir is using this to get to
1:45:24 > 1:45:27featuring Laura Muir.Muir is using this to get to them -- Dibaba. She's
1:45:27 > 1:45:30definitely got medal, what colour will it be? Dibaba trying to make it
1:45:30 > 1:45:36three world titles in a row kicks again. One last effort, Dibaba,
1:45:36 > 1:45:41looking for the line. She's just about going to make it. Dibaba gets
1:45:41 > 1:45:49the gold, Hassan gets the Silver, Laura Muir the bronze. 2.37 for the
1:45:49 > 1:45:55last kilometre, that is very, very quick indeed.
1:45:55 > 1:45:59I don't think I need to say much more than your first global medal.
1:45:59 > 1:46:05Yes, so happy! I can't believe I've got one now. It feels like it's been
1:46:05 > 1:46:09coming for so long and I'm so glad to get on the podium. There's been
1:46:09 > 1:46:14so much talk about just how strong that field is, how special is its
1:46:14 > 1:46:18knowing you've got your mettle against that field?Yeah, getting a
1:46:18 > 1:46:22world medal is really tough but everyone was in that race, it could
1:46:22 > 1:46:26have been anyone, or the fastest times in the world weather. To come
1:46:26 > 1:46:30away with a medal in that field and being so close to the front, as
1:46:30 > 1:46:36well. I'm just so happy. When we saw that break of three, we knew a medal
1:46:36 > 1:46:39was coming. Did you think you could have got the silver on that home
1:46:39 > 1:46:46straight?My legs were tired! At last ten metres I think I was happy
1:46:46 > 1:46:49to stay on my feet and my legs were really tired. There's so many
1:46:49 > 1:46:54different ways the race that have panned out but I could have been
1:46:54 > 1:46:58fourth or fifth costs, so to come away with a medal, there is no
1:46:58 > 1:46:59disappointment is their
1:46:59 > 1:47:00away with a medal, there is no disappointment is their toll.Lets
1:47:00 > 1:47:07have a word with Paula Radcliffe who is in the commentary box. Eilish
1:47:07 > 1:47:13McColgan also going in these heats. I saw Laura in reception at the
1:47:13 > 1:47:17hotel today. She looked incredibly relaxed, looked like she'd recovered
1:47:17 > 1:47:24well from last night. What will the tactics be in these semis?I think
1:47:24 > 1:47:27tactics will be to expend as little energy as possible and stay out of
1:47:27 > 1:47:33trouble and qualify safely. She said after the race yesterday, her
1:47:33 > 1:47:33trouble and qualify safely. She said after the race yesterday, her
1:47:33 > 1:47:37preparation has actually been easier even though she had a hard race last
1:47:37 > 1:47:39night for this race this evening that it was for last night with the
1:47:39 > 1:47:43fight to get here because of the weather conditions. It's poor Eilish
1:47:43 > 1:47:48in the second heat who has a much more difficult qualifying act ahead
1:47:48 > 1:47:53of her.In terms of confidence, we talked last night about breaking
1:47:53 > 1:47:57through finally, upgrading from fourth to a podium finish in a
1:47:57 > 1:48:01global championship. Will she have woken up this morning with a
1:48:01 > 1:48:05different feeling about herself? Will that be the first thought on
1:48:05 > 1:48:10her mind? That they when it happened to you, what's it like? It's like a
1:48:10 > 1:48:14weight is lifted off your shoulders. She is known that she's been capable
1:48:14 > 1:48:18of getting the world medal. We've known it. But actually going out
1:48:18 > 1:48:21there and delivering is something different. She did that last night
1:48:21 > 1:48:26so she now has the confidence that that gives her and just the control
1:48:26 > 1:48:29over the other girls that it gives you, as well. She's no longer the
1:48:29 > 1:48:32person who runs fast and can't quite get there to the medal. She is the
1:48:32 > 1:48:36person who runs fast and can get there and get a medal. She is bigger
1:48:36 > 1:48:41danger for the other athletes in being confident herself.Thank you
1:48:41 > 1:48:44very much. We'll join you shortly for the first of those 1500 metre
1:48:44 > 1:48:48semis. Let's the Steve Backley. What's been happening in the early
1:48:48 > 1:48:55exchanges in the long jump? COMMENTATOR: very early stages in
1:48:55 > 1:49:07this long jump final. Radek Juska, third man to jump.
1:49:09 > 1:49:18third man to jump. Sarah 's Leeds in this round.
1:49:19 > 1:49:29Know one over the eight-metre mark yet. Good on the board, good height.
1:49:29 > 1:49:33Good tension, good atmosphere in the stadium this evening. The world's
1:49:33 > 1:49:38best long jumpers.
1:49:38 > 1:49:49best long jumpers. 7.99, Juska goes into the lead. Shi China chasing
1:49:49 > 1:49:587.99. -- Shi of China. Wasn't good on the board. Shi making some
1:49:58 > 1:50:04adjustments or needing to. Top eight, three further jumps. After
1:50:04 > 1:50:11three jumps there will be that cut. 15 start. There is a cult of seven
1:50:11 > 1:50:22after that three jumps -- there is a cull of seven. We turn our attention
1:50:22 > 1:50:29to Tyrone Smith, the oldest man in the field at 33. Best this season of
1:50:29 > 1:50:407.7 seven. He's going to need all of that and some to make that cut mark.
1:50:40 > 1:50:43Ruswahl Samaai is keen to get involved, standing behind him. One
1:50:43 > 1:50:47of the really talented South African jumpers all involved here this
1:50:47 > 1:50:55evening. One on the right of your screen, as well. Fairly deliberate
1:50:55 > 1:51:04on the approach, good acceleration. Just lengthens before the board,
1:51:04 > 1:51:15Smith. That causes him to slow down a little bit.7.75 for Smith.
1:51:16 > 1:51:18a little bit.7.75 for Smith. Two Laura Muir, then. The
1:51:18 > 1:51:23bronze-medallist in the world indoor Championships, setting out on a
1:51:23 > 1:51:27quest to win another one hopeful in the 1500 metres. Qualification here
1:51:27 > 1:51:34I don't think we'll be too much of a stretch. The first two in each heat.
1:51:34 > 1:51:40Some good athletes in here. Louise Gregor. Aisha Praught, Jamaican,
1:51:40 > 1:51:47having a good year.
1:51:47 > 1:51:52having a good year. Games everyday of
1:51:53 > 1:51:54of other -- gens Nvidia
1:51:58 > 1:52:02I think the point about the 3,000-metre race, why you are more
1:52:02 > 1:52:07tired is the really hard last thousand metres. An even pace race
1:52:07 > 1:52:13and a bit of a kick.
1:52:17 > 1:52:25and a bit of a kick. They might not run as quick in the final. This is a
1:52:25 > 1:52:28hard 1500 metres, the 2000 metres last night. Coming straight into a
1:52:28 > 1:52:341500 metre heat. The quality of those two, Laura Muir and Dibaba
1:52:34 > 1:52:40should see them through here. We have lain disqualifications in the
1:52:40 > 1:52:473000. I was going to say at least no one will get disqualified for
1:52:47 > 1:52:52running out of their lain! Just talk a bit quickly about running two
1:52:52 > 1:52:59events in Championships when you have that hesitancy of your bike, a
1:52:59 > 1:53:04medal. It opens up the freedom to go and run as you want and as you wish.
1:53:04 > 1:53:08This is more familiar territory for Laura, the 1500.It is, it's back to
1:53:08 > 1:53:13her home event. To some extent she had practice at this which is why
1:53:13 > 1:53:17she did the double in Belgrade last time. It certainly makes it easier
1:53:17 > 1:53:21that it was a straight final in the 3000 metres. That's a completely
1:53:21 > 1:53:24different kettle of fish when you're trying to do it and have to run
1:53:24 > 1:53:29heats in the 3000. Laura actually ran the fastest 1500 of the year so
1:53:29 > 1:53:34far in the second half of that race last night. Faster than she had to
1:53:34 > 1:53:39run to win the Scottish universities indoors. She ran hard at that point.
1:53:39 > 1:53:43She shouldn't hopefully have to run that fast tonight to qualify, but
1:53:43 > 1:53:45she has to be prepared and capable of doing that, should someone else
1:53:45 > 1:53:49decides to go out and make this hard because she has to qualify
1:53:49 > 1:53:52comfortable and with ease to stay on track for the target she's set
1:53:52 > 1:53:57herself.You can sort of see what Aisha Praught is doing. She's run
1:53:57 > 1:54:01fast this year but doesn't really want to lead this all the way but
1:54:01 > 1:54:05she was trying to entice someone else to pick it up and so you end up
1:54:05 > 1:54:09winning 33s and 34s which isn't quick enough. It's not going to be
1:54:09 > 1:54:12adorable but it's certainly not going to mean that the other two
1:54:12 > 1:54:17heats are going to think, crikey, the first was quick! They are all
1:54:17 > 1:54:20lining up there. Dibaba kicks going to the front and moving back. Laura
1:54:20 > 1:54:29Muir keeping out of trouble.
1:54:29 > 1:54:31Muir keeping out of trouble. Luiza Gega moves to the front. She has
1:54:31 > 1:54:35good pace but it's not too quick which I think Laura Muir will be
1:54:35 > 1:54:44happy about.Nobody was keen to come past Aisha Praught. Peres moved
1:54:44 > 1:54:48round of the outside and put a bit of pressure on her. And also by the
1:54:48 > 1:54:51fact they all Northern is just sitting there, waiting to kick at
1:54:51 > 1:54:55some point is going to be Dibaba and Laura Muir will follow her at that
1:54:55 > 1:54:58point. They need to be in the first two to guarantee themselves going
1:54:58 > 1:55:02through to the final.Dibaba doing what she likes to do. Get things
1:55:02 > 1:55:09moving along. She'll wind this pays up. Laura can decide to go with her
1:55:09 > 1:55:14or sit and kick for second which I'm sure she'll be able to do. A 32 is
1:55:14 > 1:55:17picked up and Dibaba will keep doing this, it'll stretch them out. Laura
1:55:17 > 1:55:22Muir trying to make sure she's in the controlling spot, which she is.
1:55:22 > 1:55:26She is now deciding, I might as well move past. Laura keeping an eye on
1:55:26 > 1:55:34what's happening behind her. Praught coming back again.
1:55:36 > 1:55:38coming back again.Praught is primarily a steeple chase and she
1:55:38 > 1:55:43can finish first. She can finish as fast as Laura Muir on best legs but
1:55:43 > 1:55:51I'm tired legs -- tired legs she has to make your she has a book that.
1:55:51 > 1:55:58Keeping Dibaba inside.
1:55:58 > 1:56:02Keeping Dibaba inside. She's got three, four-metre and expends Seu
1:56:02 > 1:56:07extends a bit but Praught is still there. Laura just needs to be aware.
1:56:07 > 1:56:12She looks comfortable, she's looking at the screen. Dibaba will keep
1:56:12 > 1:56:14going away and I'm sure Laura will keep some distance between herself
1:56:14 > 1:56:20and Aisha Praught who is well clear of the rest. As expected, gens every
1:56:20 > 1:56:26De Vanna and Laura qualify with ease and it's ended up being reasonably
1:56:26 > 1:56:31quick.
1:56:31 > 1:56:34quick. Praught takes third. Not a cancer there but also you didn't
1:56:34 > 1:56:38have to turn on the burners. Didn't have to really dig deep and kick
1:56:38 > 1:56:44hard over the last 200, which is good. It's those sort of heats that
1:56:44 > 1:56:48sometimes make you a bit nervous. No dramas for Laura and she'll feel
1:56:48 > 1:56:52tired. You do. You can't not feel tired. She would be delighted that's
1:56:52 > 1:56:57over with and relieved.She will and it's a funny thing, sometimes you
1:56:57 > 1:57:00feel more tired in heat than in the final just because you're not
1:57:00 > 1:57:05prepared to completely go to the wall in the heats unless it comes
1:57:05 > 1:57:08down to a last-ditch attempt to get yourself into the final. She was
1:57:08 > 1:57:12trying to conserve as much energy as possible. She ran it very sensibly,
1:57:12 > 1:57:17chatting about the screen, checking to the sides, sensing there's any
1:57:17 > 1:57:20danger coming from either side of her and just doing what she needed
1:57:20 > 1:57:26to do down that home straight. She has took the very fast. There were a
1:57:26 > 1:57:34couple of quick laps by Dibaba. Kept running through the line. There are
1:57:34 > 1:57:38two more heats to go. The three fastest loser spots, she must be in
1:57:38 > 1:57:49with a chance and sets the bar for others to aim at.
1:57:49 > 1:57:51with a chance and sets the bar for others to aim at.That was a
1:57:51 > 1:57:54relatively slow race. The top two spots me you had to get it.
1:57:54 > 1:58:00Comfortable?Yeah. It was quite a quick race for a heat. A bit scrappy
1:58:00 > 1:58:05at the start. I tried to stay out of trouble and followed Dibaba but
1:58:05 > 1:58:11didn't go that hard. I kept an eye on the screen for weather girls were
1:58:11 > 1:58:15me and wanted to secure the second spot. There was quite a lot of
1:58:15 > 1:58:18shunting in the early part of the race. What was it like trying to
1:58:18 > 1:58:25find your rhythm? It was OK. I got used to it. The start was scrappy
1:58:25 > 1:58:29and a few people came out of nowhere, stepping to the side of
1:58:29 > 1:58:33things. It was mine and I got the job done unscathed. All set for the
1:58:33 > 1:58:36final tomorrow. The job is done and you're through to the final
1:58:36 > 1:58:39tomorrow. Let's think about yesterday. What of the last -- what
1:58:39 > 1:58:47have the last 24 hours be my?I've not really had chance to celebrate.
1:58:47 > 1:58:53Had to prepare for today and 1500 tomorrow. I'm so happy to have the
1:58:53 > 1:58:59medal.Banks were speaking to us.
1:59:04 > 1:59:12All happening in the last 500 metres. Aisha Praught dragged down
1:59:12 > 1:59:15to a 4.07, which looks good for qualifying spot, but those two
1:59:15 > 1:59:22definitely true. Onto the second heat in the women's 1500 metres.
1:59:22 > 1:59:32Meraf Bahta, only 12 in the 3000 metres here.
1:59:33 > 1:59:37metres here. Hanna Klein made the final of the 1500 metres in the
1:59:37 > 1:59:41Championships last year. Kate Van Buskirk of Canada alongside her.
1:59:41 > 1:59:48Dominique Scott, one of her four of the nine who run in the 3000 metres.
1:59:48 > 1:59:54Beatrice Chepkoech, infamous for missing the job in the final of the
1:59:54 > 1:59:583000 metres steeplechase at the championships. Eilish McColgan Randa
1:59:58 > 2:00:05metres, as well. Her mother lives in the 1989 world indoors, silver in
2:00:05 > 2:00:09the 3000. Sixth in the 1300 which I'm told was 13 minutes later.
2:00:09 > 2:00:15That's a quick turnaround.
2:00:15 > 2:00:28Stand back from the line, please, ladies.Somebody with a tow line.
2:00:30 > 2:00:35Chepkoech stars as the favourite here. A bit of barging in the early
2:00:35 > 2:00:41stages. Chepkoech wants none of that. Slight advantage for these
2:00:41 > 2:00:45runners that they know the first he'd started slowly but built up to
2:00:45 > 2:00:55a good pace. Times you are looking for, fastest losers, 4.07, 90 four
2:00:55 > 2:01:02Marta Perez of Spain. The two fastest losers, if you don't make it
2:01:02 > 2:01:05through as the automatic qualifiers. Eilish McColgan sitting near the
2:01:05 > 2:01:08back of the field as Beatrice Chepkoech takes it out. There are
2:01:08 > 2:01:12much easier ways to run 4.09 than the girls who did in the first heat.
2:01:12 > 2:01:16The girls in here looking up half the night on the fastest loser spots
2:01:16 > 2:01:20need to get moving earlier in the race to give themselves a better
2:01:20 > 2:01:24shot. This looks like a better pace so far.Won at least we didn't
2:01:24 > 2:01:28mention is Colleen Quigley. In fourth place at the moment. Second
2:01:28 > 2:01:36in the US Championships between Shelley Hoolahan. Chepkoech takes a
2:01:36 > 2:01:42glance at the screens. Won the overall IAAF indoor tour title. Run
2:01:42 > 2:01:51very quickly in Glasgow. 4.02. Shows what form she's
2:01:51 > 2:01:58what form she's in. Colleen Quigley mixer move round the outside.I
2:01:58 > 2:02:01think Bahta might have said something in the qualifying stages
2:02:01 > 2:02:03for this race today when she realised she wasn't really in the
2:02:03 > 2:02:14hunt. I'm not sure that Claudia Michaela Bobbitt that. Chepkoech, if
2:02:14 > 2:02:19she's in the form she was in last week in Glasgow and she has been so
2:02:19 > 2:02:22far in the 15 hundred metres, over 1500, then she's just running with
2:02:22 > 2:02:26ease. I think that is a change from the steeplechase to the 1500 metres
2:02:26 > 2:02:32that may well stick further than the Commonwealth.
2:02:32 > 2:02:37I wonder how much was taken out of the legs of Dibaba in the 3000
2:02:37 > 2:02:42metres, because Chepkoech will hope it took out a great deal. She looks
2:02:42 > 2:02:47so comfortable out in front, as Bahta, and a Liz McColgan has made a
2:02:47 > 2:02:50bit of a move to get into sixth place, creeping around the outside
2:02:50 > 2:02:56with that very, very long stride alongside the South African
2:02:56 > 2:02:59Dominique Scott and Colleen Quigley and perhaps the pace has dropped a
2:02:59 > 2:03:01little from Chepkoech. It's beginning to bunch up a little more
2:03:01 > 2:03:05at the moment.Starting to bunch up and that gets dangerous when you've
2:03:05 > 2:03:10got this many girls in there and especially with legs as long as a
2:03:10 > 2:03:13Eilish McColgan. She looked like she would move wide, then realised there
2:03:13 > 2:03:17were too many girls in front of her Rand has lost the momentum she
2:03:17 > 2:03:23started, and she has to start all over again. We have seven or eight
2:03:23 > 2:03:26athletes out front, Chepkoech leading, they've closed behind her.
2:03:26 > 2:03:30Colleen Quigley, the American in fourth place, Dominique Scott of
2:03:30 > 2:03:36South Africa, a leash McColgan, a fall, Bahta is down and she will not
2:03:36 > 2:03:40recover from there, I'm sure, was just a couple of laps to go, a long
2:03:40 > 2:03:45way back and the pain etched on her face. What caused it, we'll find out
2:03:45 > 2:03:51afterwards because there may be something to say on that, but Bahta
2:03:51 > 2:03:56could be given a run in finally she was impeded because she was in a
2:03:56 > 2:03:59very good position but she will not get back into things in this race.
2:03:59 > 2:04:03It might have been Colleen Quigley who brought her down and she was
2:04:03 > 2:04:10most disadvantaged by that. A Liz did well to swerve wide. I'm not
2:04:10 > 2:04:16sure she's got much left for this final lap.Two go through
2:04:16 > 2:04:19automatically three fastest losers. Chepkoech is controlling things.
2:04:19 > 2:04:26Dominique Scott running well, Quigley of the United States running
2:04:26 > 2:04:29around the outside and Dominique Scott may be paying for the 3000
2:04:29 > 2:04:33metres there but she is hanging in, the South African. Chepkoech of
2:04:33 > 2:04:36Kenya out in front, then Van Buskirk, Colleen Quigley trying to
2:04:36 > 2:04:40find a way through and here comes quickly around the Canadian to take
2:04:40 > 2:04:45second, ahead of Van Scott and McColgan crossing the line now, so
2:04:45 > 2:04:49she will not go through but Chepkoech certainly well and Bahta
2:04:49 > 2:04:55may still go through because we will wait to see what caused that fall
2:04:55 > 2:05:00and if she was impeded. You can see what it means to her to have fallen
2:05:00 > 2:05:07there. McColgan perhaps the running of the 3000 metres still in her legs
2:05:07 > 2:05:11but apace she couldn't live with this evening. No, she couldn't, she
2:05:11 > 2:05:14said she hasn't felt herself in the last couple of weeks and she didn't
2:05:14 > 2:05:19look herself out there but that's sad to see from Bahta. She may be
2:05:19 > 2:05:22advanced to the final but is she capable of running and running well
2:05:22 > 2:05:26in the final now, because she has to be her. She was basically run over
2:05:26 > 2:05:31the top of. This is Bahta, in behind Klein, and
2:05:31 > 2:05:37quickly behind her clipped her Quigley, who goes through, Quigley
2:05:37 > 2:05:42did well to avoid her Rand did well to go on and finish in second place,
2:05:42 > 2:05:49but another look.
2:05:49 > 2:05:52but another look.Yeah, there was definitely a bit of argy-bargy going
2:05:52 > 2:05:56on before that, a bit of armed tangling around the bend and
2:05:56 > 2:06:01probably in that Bahta is as much to blame as Quigley is but it does look
2:06:01 > 2:06:06as though... May be her knee caught. I don't think it was intentional
2:06:06 > 2:06:10from Colleen Quigley but it was certainly caused by Colleen Quigley.
2:06:10 > 2:06:13It's a good job she's a steeplechaser because she did well
2:06:13 > 2:06:20to keep going over her.If you were a judge what would your decision be?
2:06:20 > 2:06:24Bahta in great distress, obviously, but...I don't know, can they
2:06:24 > 2:06:28advance Bahta without disqualifying Quigley? I don't think it was
2:06:28 > 2:06:35intentional. But certainly...As it stands at the moment Chepkoech and
2:06:35 > 2:06:39Quigley going through as the automatic qualifiers and Van Buskirk
2:06:39 > 2:06:43just sneaks into the second of the fastest losers at the moment ahead
2:06:43 > 2:06:53of Perez of Spain. McColgan down in sixth place.
2:06:53 > 2:06:59Coming towards the end of the first round of the long jump final,
2:06:59 > 2:07:03Echevarria of Cuba, 19 years of age, still know one beyond eight metres
2:07:03 > 2:07:14yet. That is a long effort, he has a season's best, a lifetime best, of
2:07:14 > 2:07:208.34 metres and the 19-year-old looks as though he's come to play.
2:07:20 > 2:07:24He shortens his stride, accelerates in. Perfect board, absolutely
2:07:24 > 2:07:34perfect board.A great tradition in Cuba, of course, 8.19, Echevarria
2:07:34 > 2:07:41takes the lead. Jarrion Lawson, hugely talented US champion. First
2:07:41 > 2:07:46round.
2:07:46 > 2:07:54It's around the eight-metre mark. It's a valid jump for Lawson. Maybe
2:07:54 > 2:07:58just a bit of tension there, not quite into his running yet, looking
2:07:58 > 2:08:05to force it. Manyonga, the only man who hasn't jumped to conclude this
2:08:05 > 2:08:10first round.
2:08:10 > 2:08:17first round. 7.92 Lawson in force, expect more. -- in fourth place.
2:08:17 > 2:08:23Here's Luvo Manyonga, the world champion last year. Silver-medallist
2:08:23 > 2:08:28in Rio by just one centimetre. His opening job. It's huge! But it's a
2:08:28 > 2:08:36foul. That's a massive effort. A big smile from him. It shows what he's
2:08:36 > 2:08:44capable of. But it is a foul. It won't be measured. Five jumps
2:08:44 > 2:08:47remaining. Manyonga looking in great shape.
2:08:55 > 2:09:00Still no news yet on that little collision involving Bahta. I have a
2:09:00 > 2:09:03feeling she may get advanced. I don't think they'll disqualify
2:09:03 > 2:09:11Quigley, but we'll see. Hassan in this one who held up Laura Muir in
2:09:11 > 2:09:18the 3000 beta final, Chebet, not necessarily the best of the Kenyans.
2:09:18 > 2:09:25Houlihan is back, Shelby Houlihan, who didn't run a great race in the
2:09:25 > 2:09:33final. She finished fifth, Henrik started moving up to the 1500
2:09:33 > 2:09:38metres, it will be interesting to see if she can build a career at
2:09:38 > 2:09:47this event -- Anita Hinriksdottir. Nilsson, the Swede, and Hassan.
2:09:47 > 2:09:53Hassan doesn't always get the 1500 metres right. She missed out on a
2:09:53 > 2:09:59medal in the 1500 metres, yet won medal in the 5000, which she hates,
2:09:59 > 2:10:03but she still getting to grips with the longer distance. The one person
2:10:03 > 2:10:17we didn't see there was a bit of a threat here, say on -- Seyaum.
2:10:17 > 2:10:23Hinriksdottir, who has one of the most distinctive, lets calling that,
2:10:23 > 2:10:26running actions, which we've got used to seeing over the years and
2:10:26 > 2:10:31she's always front run 800 metres. Surely she doesn't think she can
2:10:31 > 2:10:37then run 1500 metres in the same way.If I'd ask you to bet who would
2:10:37 > 2:10:41be at the front, you would put your money on Hinriksdottir. She only
2:10:41 > 2:10:46knows one way is to feel comfortable racing and it's a step out of her
2:10:46 > 2:10:51comfort zone to raise 1500 metres indoors. Straightaway she goes to
2:10:51 > 2:10:56the front. She does have that very long loping stride and for that
2:10:56 > 2:10:59reason she's probably more comfortable running out on her Rome,
2:10:59 > 2:11:03but I think she just relaxes more that way. She's looked at those
2:11:03 > 2:11:07times. What she needs to do to put this raise up there for the
2:11:07 > 2:11:10qualifying times to come from this final race, and she's getting on
2:11:10 > 2:11:16with it and getting it done and Hassan, a stumble there already.I'm
2:11:16 > 2:11:22surprised Hassan is quite so far up early run but she's got involved.
2:11:22 > 2:11:30Hinriksdottir setting a good pace and they are certainly heading for
2:11:30 > 2:11:34under 4.10. She's slowing a little bit, the other is starting to bunch.
2:11:34 > 2:11:40Seyaum is a talented young is the opium, isn't always the best
2:11:40 > 2:11:43tactically. You always have to watch Arafi, the dangerous Moroccan. When
2:11:43 > 2:11:50it comes to championship racing, she has been found wanting over the
2:11:50 > 2:11:53years. Shelby Houlihan will be relying on her quick last 200 metres
2:11:53 > 2:11:58but she can't give the Steele much of a start.No, she's probably one
2:11:58 > 2:12:01who is not happy to see Hinriksdottir setting off at this
2:12:01 > 2:12:08pace. It's only just outside four minute pace. Even at 33 As she's
2:12:08 > 2:12:13comfortably ahead of a 4.09 pace that is needed to progress as a
2:12:13 > 2:12:16fastest loser, so it's asking questions of people in the field
2:12:16 > 2:12:22already in the gaps are starting to open up further back. She's got
2:12:22 > 2:12:26through two seconds through 800 metres, 2.12, but she's slowing down
2:12:26 > 2:12:30and Hinriksdottir, if you are trying to run 1500 metres that's not really
2:12:30 > 2:12:35the rate do it. You have to keep building the pace, or you start a
2:12:35 > 2:12:43bit slow and get quicker. Dawit Seyaum thinking she doesn't want to
2:12:43 > 2:12:48use this energy so she goes back. Chebet and Seyaum and all of a
2:12:48 > 2:12:55sudden there's a big bunch, being controlled from the front.It's
2:12:55 > 2:12:58sensible from Hassan, when you are coming in on tired legs and when the
2:12:58 > 2:13:03race has been set up for you, as it has by Hinriksdottir so far, she
2:13:03 > 2:13:08needs to make it a long run from home. She can't rely on that change
2:13:08 > 2:13:14of face she usually has when she's up against Seo and Chebet, and Arafi
2:13:14 > 2:13:19who has squeezed their way through. A push at the back from Hendrix from
2:13:19 > 2:13:28Iceland. -- from Bendix Dottie. The change of pace, Hassan having to
2:13:28 > 2:13:34find her elbows to try and hold up Chebet. She will save it for the
2:13:34 > 2:13:39last lap but keeps Chebet running wide. Chebet wanted to cutting.
2:13:39 > 2:13:45Houlihan, dangerous, lurking, the American. They take the bell. What
2:13:45 > 2:13:48about Hassan? Only top two by rights here. All of these could go through,
2:13:48 > 2:13:57they are quick enough. They could run a big last lap. He closed Hassan
2:13:57 > 2:14:02and Seyaum, tactically sometimes badly conducting herself. -- here
2:14:02 > 2:14:09goes Hassan. Chebet is holding the second place, then Arafi. Houlihan
2:14:09 > 2:14:13will come again but Hassan kicks away. Chebet comes through in
2:14:13 > 2:14:18second. They all go through there and if Seyaum hadn't given up, as
2:14:18 > 2:14:21she obviously did, she might have got through but I don't think she
2:14:21 > 2:14:27will. So it
2:14:27 > 2:14:31will. So it will be Praught who goes through as the fastest loser from
2:14:31 > 2:14:34Laura's heat. Quicker than any of those would have wanted partly
2:14:34 > 2:14:40because Hinriksdottir took off. It was nice to see her at the front for
2:14:40 > 2:14:43a while. Hassan, Chebet, fast finishing Houlihan doing well. The
2:14:43 > 2:14:47big names are through. The big names are all through apart from Seyaum,
2:14:47 > 2:14:53who made a big tactical error. I think she just went to hard when she
2:14:53 > 2:14:56went and then she wasn't able to maintain that. She tightened up and
2:14:56 > 2:15:00you are right, she's doing that how all a bit down the last straight and
2:15:00 > 2:15:11threw away the chances of advancing in that final fastest loser.
2:15:11 > 2:15:22Second round of the long jump. Season's best for Samaai but he's
2:15:22 > 2:15:30capable of much more. Second jump. Similar kind of distance.I think
2:15:30 > 2:15:34you may have snapped over eight metres, sunk a bit and lifted off
2:15:34 > 2:15:38the board. He's sunk a little bit into the board. Didn't carry speed.
2:15:38 > 2:15:48Just prepared... That's close. Good board, little bit to spare there.
2:15:48 > 2:15:55Only one man so far over eight metres. That's Juan Miguel
2:15:55 > 2:16:00Echevarria of Cuba.
2:16:01 > 2:16:04Echevarria of Cuba. Marquis Dendy, hugely talented American. The
2:16:04 > 2:16:10defending champion, wide eyes. Somewhat 35 metres back. His legs
2:16:10 > 2:16:15heavily strapped. In this the second round... That looks over eight
2:16:15 > 2:16:25metres, possibly. Not happy, shake off the head there. For me, again,
2:16:25 > 2:16:29just that preparation step. But again, there are two techniques. The
2:16:29 > 2:16:33straight leg run off the board or that sink and leg. Either way, you
2:16:33 > 2:16:36have to lower the hips and raise them and carry speed across the
2:16:36 > 2:16:41border to the distance. Here's the man who can produce something big.
2:16:41 > 2:16:498.02 in third place. Right, John Miguel active area of Cuba is in the
2:16:49 > 2:16:54lead. 8.1
2:16:55 > 2:17:03lead. 8.1 nine. Second round jump. A big effort. Is it valid? It is.
2:17:03 > 2:17:09That's 19 years of age, Echevarria has taken on some much more
2:17:09 > 2:17:20experienced jumpers like the South Africans. Team-mate even Prideaux
2:17:20 > 2:17:28set, five times world indoor champion. Echevarria extends his
2:17:28 > 2:17:38lead. 8.28. Brilliant jump. Fantastic from the youngster there.
2:17:38 > 2:17:47Just to tidy up the 1500 metres third heat.
2:17:47 > 2:17:56As expected, the two fastest loser spots going to Arafi and Houlihan.
2:17:56 > 2:18:03Seyaum not going through. Let's look at the full qualifiers. I still
2:18:03 > 2:18:08think the big names are the ones that will win the medals in the
2:18:08 > 2:18:12three thousands could well be the medallist in the 1500 metre final
2:18:12 > 2:18:19when it happens tomorrow night.
2:18:21 > 2:18:26The three big names through.
2:18:27 > 2:18:31The light show behind us is because the men are entering the arena for
2:18:31 > 2:18:35the shot put final. You'll see them shortly. Sorry, the women's shot put
2:18:35 > 2:18:39final. I haven't seen the athletes coming and I just knew there was a
2:18:39 > 2:18:43shot put final tonight. Let's look at the long jump which is definitely
2:18:43 > 2:18:49men! You can tell us about Echevarria who's put himself out
2:18:49 > 2:18:55there with a fantastic jump.He's someone I'd forgotten about. He's a
2:18:55 > 2:18:59Cuban who is very good at jumping. They've had a history of fantastic
2:18:59 > 2:19:03jump. Pedrosa, my favourite jumper of all time, is the most famous of
2:19:03 > 2:19:07all. They have this conveyor Belt of jumpers coming through and you can
2:19:07 > 2:19:12see technically they love trying to mimic the way Pedrosa would jump
2:19:12 > 2:19:16with a 2.5 hitch which is movement you year. Interesting that most long
2:19:16 > 2:19:20jumpers struggle with 2.5. Even Carl Lewis struggled to get all those
2:19:20 > 2:19:30rotations out. Perfect on the board and a good structure runway. This is
2:19:30 > 2:19:34what we were talking about earlier. The girls were doing it in the
2:19:34 > 2:19:36heptathlon. It's about pushing through to the right positions,
2:19:36 > 2:19:39getting up right, attacking the board, which is exactly what he did.
2:19:39 > 2:19:44Came through for a lovely jump. 8.28, he is not messing around.
2:19:44 > 2:19:49Gilbert is a bit of pressure on. Luvo Manyonga will go out there and
2:19:49 > 2:19:53do something very special. -- he went out there and it's in special.
2:19:53 > 2:19:57It was a foul but he's putting out a marker for the left. He laughed it
2:19:57 > 2:20:02off. This was the foul. He laughed it off and waved to the crowd. This
2:20:02 > 2:20:10is the foul.You can see he's supremely confident. He has a nice
2:20:10 > 2:20:16dry face, gets himself upright and soaring through the air there. It
2:20:16 > 2:20:22looks very dangerous. Is it shorter, the pitch? The interesting thing in
2:20:22 > 2:20:26the UK, we have a lot of one metre this is the distance from the pit
2:20:26 > 2:20:34and people aren't a huge fan of that.Where you live now with
2:20:34 > 2:20:34Jarrion
2:20:34 > 2:20:39that.Where you live now with Jarrion.
2:20:39 > 2:20:42COMMENTATOR: Lawson getting ready for his second attempt. He's in
2:20:42 > 2:20:47fifth place.
2:20:49 > 2:20:52fifth place. Well, stretching, trying to reach further into the pit
2:20:52 > 2:20:57but he's got no distance on that. What's going on there?He's
2:20:57 > 2:21:02accelerating in but then he is for me a little bit low in the hips and
2:21:02 > 2:21:07doesn't quite get through. Swells the arms forward and comes in a bit
2:21:07 > 2:21:12too premature into the pit. Maybe reaching onto the board little bit
2:21:12 > 2:21:25there.Lawson, stays in fifth place. At the moment, it's the young man,
2:21:25 > 2:21:32Echevarria of Cuba, 8.28, who is in the lead. We have one athlete to
2:21:32 > 2:21:42complete rounds two and it's the main man, Luvo Manyonga. The man who
2:21:42 > 2:21:46is highly fancied to take the title here. But he did carry that foul in
2:21:46 > 2:21:51the first round. It was a big foul. A big jump but a long way over the
2:21:51 > 2:21:56board, as well.
2:21:56 > 2:22:00board, as well. Manyonga, round two. Off a foul in the first round. It's
2:22:00 > 2:22:05a big effort, it's a huge jump, but it's another foul. He's not smiling
2:22:05 > 2:22:10this time! Or maybe years. He knows it's a big effort but he's put
2:22:10 > 2:22:15himself under some pressure.I think so, I think so. Great speed on the
2:22:15 > 2:22:19runway but lengthening and putting it over. Why we going to get to see
2:22:19 > 2:22:26how much of a foul it is? It's a big foul, it's a big foul. It's
2:22:26 > 2:22:30inaccurate in terms of runway but you can see and that plasticine
2:22:30 > 2:22:33board, because it's raised gives you a little more left. You often see
2:22:33 > 2:22:38big jumps because it's like jumping off a box so you get the lift and
2:22:38 > 2:22:43that raises your centre of gravity faster and harder than normal.Eight
2:22:43 > 2:22:49athletes to complete and go forward after three jumps. Manyonga is not
2:22:49 > 2:22:53among them as we stand. One more job to get among the cut.
2:22:53 > 2:22:58If you can nail one of those could be summing special coming out of the
2:22:58 > 2:23:00world champion Luvo Manyonga tonight. We are all looking for
2:23:00 > 2:23:04something really special to come from Katarina Johnson-Thompson in
2:23:04 > 2:23:11about five minutes' time. She's in pole position in the pentathlon.
2:23:11 > 2:23:14We've expected so much from this brilliant young athlete over the
2:23:14 > 2:23:17years and she's always come up against something troubling her in
2:23:17 > 2:23:21her events at major championships but she seems to have got things
2:23:21 > 2:23:31right.
2:23:31 > 2:23:37A powerful run and it's a personal best. All smiles from Katarina
2:23:37 > 2:23:42Johnson-Thompson.It's much better, that's more like it. What a
2:23:42 > 2:23:50performance from Katarina Johnson-Thompson!
2:23:50 > 2:23:52Johnson-Thompson!Johnson-Thompson there to be shot at. The heat is on.
2:23:52 > 2:24:00It should be her time now. She's in a great position. She's in the lead
2:24:00 > 2:24:04by 33 points. She has a better 800-metre time than her nearest
2:24:04 > 2:24:07rival. It's about getting out there, running from the front and just
2:24:07 > 2:24:12doing what she can do. Not worrying about the others around are jostling
2:24:12 > 2:24:18for position., no, it's her medal to lose. She's in a great position
2:24:18 > 2:24:20and she would hopefully have visualised that this would be the
2:24:20 > 2:24:28case. She has mature. I think this is the time when she can step up,
2:24:28 > 2:24:31run her own race. She can afford to track if she wants to but I think
2:24:31 > 2:24:36she'll go out and try to impress the crowd, do herself justice and take a
2:24:36 > 2:24:41box that has been missing for a little while. The story of her day
2:24:41 > 2:24:45started early this morning when the women came out for the hurdles and
2:24:45 > 2:24:51it's an event... It's not her best but it's one that she usually start
2:24:51 > 2:24:55with a good confident time and performance and she did that today.
2:24:55 > 2:25:01She looked slightly tense but trying to get that event out of the way
2:25:01 > 2:25:04with a half decent time is what she did in order to go into the high
2:25:04 > 2:25:08jump, something she is an excellent athlete at. She's been approaching
2:25:08 > 2:25:12it the right way today, nothing has been getting on top of her. It's
2:25:12 > 2:25:17that right balance from her. The high jump is great but this for me
2:25:17 > 2:25:24was the event were I thought, yes, Kat, you got to grips with who you
2:25:24 > 2:25:26are, what you are about, and you delivered a performance that is
2:25:26 > 2:25:32respectable for your standard of shot putting. You can't ask for
2:25:32 > 2:25:39more.Definitely not. It is one of her weaker events so to get a PB is
2:25:39 > 2:25:42a big thing. This long jump, we could have expected more from it and
2:25:42 > 2:25:49she was peppering around 6.5 metres. She is a better jumper than that.
2:25:49 > 2:25:53She had such a commanding lead and took control. That's how it looks as
2:25:53 > 2:26:00she heads into four lapse of this track in front of a home crowd. A
2:26:00 > 2:26:03home championships. Every British athlete wants to be in that position
2:26:03 > 2:26:06and the athletes are being introduced to the crowd as they have
2:26:06 > 2:26:12been five times today for each of their events and expect when Kat
2:26:12 > 2:26:15comes out, when she's introduced, there will be an enormous work. She
2:26:15 > 2:26:21has to focus on the job in hand. And I think he will. She'll be focused
2:26:21 > 2:26:24and really focusing on producing her best performance. It really worked
2:26:24 > 2:26:31for her today and I think she'll continue. I don't think she let her
2:26:31 > 2:26:35guard down. I think she understands now that this has been a real lesson
2:26:35 > 2:26:40for her that allows her to be able to figure out, how do I get myself
2:26:40 > 2:26:43emotionally prepared to go into these major competitions and produce
2:26:43 > 2:26:49my best performance and be the best that I can be? Hopefully she's
2:26:49 > 2:26:55learned that. It's not over yet. She's still got to executes the 800
2:26:55 > 2:27:02metres.This isn't about the score. CHEERING
2:27:02 > 2:27:06Lovely reaction and a big smile.A big smile. She's got to lap it up,
2:27:06 > 2:27:10use the energy, the advantage of being at a home championships gives
2:27:10 > 2:27:16you. She's confident. She has no theatre in the 800 metres.And a two
2:27:16 > 2:27:21second lead, we think.Absolutely. She'll utilise that. This is about
2:27:21 > 2:27:23getting the medal, being the favourite going into these
2:27:23 > 2:27:29championships and delivering. We're hoping and praying, wishing, that
2:27:29 > 2:27:33it'll all come off for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
2:27:33 > 2:27:37COMMENTATOR: Take nothing for granted in sport but the crowd
2:27:37 > 2:27:39expects and Katarina Johnson-Thompson should know that if
2:27:39 > 2:27:43she runs to their potential this will be not a lap but four lapse of
2:27:43 > 2:27:46honour on her way to a world indoor title again. You may think two
2:27:46 > 2:27:50seconds is very little but it is significant, it's huge. 2.3 seconds
2:27:50 > 2:27:58effectively a lead ahead of everyone. Rodriguez is pretty clear.
2:27:58 > 2:28:02Yorgelis Rodriguez of Cuba is one of the fastest 800-metre runners out
2:28:02 > 2:28:07there but she has to overhaul Dadic by 4.4 seconds and nobody really
2:28:07 > 2:28:14outside the medals.
2:28:14 > 2:28:16outside the medals. Erica Bougard might but she has a bit of an
2:28:16 > 2:28:24injury. Katarina Johnson-Thompson can work of people. Dadic will
2:28:24 > 2:28:27perhaps work of Rodriguez or someone else who is out there, and stay
2:28:27 > 2:28:30close to them. Very difficult to open a gap that would be able to
2:28:30 > 2:28:43overhaul. We have seen it before. 150 points in 2016. Katarina
2:28:43 > 2:28:47Johnson-Thompson should be comfortable here.The first thing I
2:28:47 > 2:28:54would have said to Kat is keep out of trouble. There are too many
2:28:54 > 2:28:58people in these first couple of laps and they wouldn't normally be used
2:28:58 > 2:29:02indoors to having so many around them. She's doing that. The only
2:29:02 > 2:29:06thing that can get in the way of her winning a gold medal is surely her
2:29:06 > 2:29:11tripping up. Let's not wish that upon her and let's make sure... She
2:29:11 > 2:29:15needs to make sure she keeps it nice and clean, doesn't get into any
2:29:15 > 2:29:18bother. I'd like to see her almost running wide if necessary to make
2:29:18 > 2:29:22sure that happens. It'd be great if you could win this 800 at the end
2:29:22 > 2:29:26but if you're going to win a world title, a great way to do it is to
2:29:26 > 2:29:30win the last event. The medal positions at the moment, if only
2:29:30 > 2:29:36that it is in silver medal position. She's out in front. Katarina
2:29:36 > 2:29:44Johnson-Thompson. Moving around the outside, Bougard who is a strong 800
2:29:44 > 2:29:49runner.
2:29:49 > 2:29:54runner. Dadic has run 2.14. Katarina Johnson-Thompson hits the front and
2:29:54 > 2:29:58a bit of a roar from the crowd. Wishes controlling this nicely.
2:29:58 > 2:30:03Wants to stay there, keep it out of trouble, winding up gradually the
2:30:03 > 2:30:06crowd are loving this, loving the chance to say well done to Katrina
2:30:06 > 2:30:12Johnson-Thompson. Can she get a win in a last event?It's very crowded
2:30:12 > 2:30:17at the front. I'm not sure anything will change with regard to the
2:30:17 > 2:30:20medals as the American... Those three in the front lead and its
2:30:20 > 2:30:29Katarina Johnson-Thompson in the gold medal position. Dadic pulls out
2:30:29 > 2:30:33now. Katarina Johnson-Thompson says, this is my race, my time, my title.
2:30:33 > 2:30:37Sometimes in the past she's left the biggest of stages with only
2:30:37 > 2:30:42disappointment but here she will leave with it all. She has the gold
2:30:42 > 2:30:47medal! She is the world indoor champion, silver will go to Ivona
2:30:47 > 2:30:50Dadic and brands to Yorgelis Rodriguez of Cuba. It is gold,
2:30:50 > 2:30:59beautiful gold, for Katarina Johnson-Thompson here in Birmingham.
2:30:59 > 2:31:02Toni Minichiello alongside has watched throughout and coached the
2:31:02 > 2:31:08last British winner of this title in 2010, Jessica -- Jessica Ennis and
2:31:08 > 2:31:11Katarina Johnson-Thompson, it would have been nice to see her against
2:31:11 > 2:31:18Natalie Thiam but it's a great springboard going forward.I think
2:31:18 > 2:31:23she has to use as a springboard. My concerns are in events by she's been
2:31:23 > 2:31:29really good, like long jump, and we seen jumps of 6.80, we are seeing
2:31:29 > 2:31:356.50. Is one of the worst long johns she's ever done. We've just seen a
2:31:35 > 2:31:382.16 800, with the big three missing. It's not convincing. But a
2:31:38 > 2:31:43win is a win. You are world champion. Use that, take the time,
2:31:43 > 2:31:46let that an absorbing onto the Commonwealth Games. She won
2:31:46 > 2:31:54comfortable in the end from Ivona Dadic with Rodriguez from Cuba in
2:31:54 > 2:31:58bronze medal position, so silver to Dadic but Katarina Johnson-Thompson,
2:31:58 > 2:32:01it was impressive, it was dominant in the end and again, we'll see
2:32:01 > 2:32:04going forward how she can challenge Nafi Thiam, who is herself the
2:32:04 > 2:32:08dominant figure in the sport at the moment. But Katarina
2:32:08 > 2:32:14Johnson-Thompson this evening belongs to her and Kevin Meyer, who
2:32:14 > 2:32:19is going for gold in the men's Stefflon, congratulate the winner of
2:32:19 > 2:32:23the pentathlon. Great Britain and Northern Ireland have their first
2:32:23 > 2:32:27gold medal of these championships and to the European indoor title,
2:32:27 > 2:32:33Katarina Johnson-Thompson now adds the world title.
2:32:37 > 2:32:40the world title.Great to see Katarina Johnson-Thompson smiling,
2:32:40 > 2:32:45celebrating, raising the British flag will stop it's just wonderful
2:32:45 > 2:32:48to see her thriving of the championship. She showed lots of
2:32:48 > 2:32:53character. She came into this competition with expectations of
2:32:53 > 2:32:57gold and she stood strong. A couple of times when she was asked
2:32:57 > 2:33:02questions and she has delivered here across the whole of today. Great to
2:33:02 > 2:33:06see her winning this final event, the 800 metres, and taking gold.
2:33:06 > 2:33:12Wonderful scenes. Great Britain's first gold of these championships.
2:33:12 > 2:33:16You could almost see a glint of a tear in her eye as she came through
2:33:16 > 2:33:20the mind, Katarina Johnson-Thompson. We'll talk about the title and the
2:33:20 > 2:33:24quality of the field, there are some good athletes in there and more
2:33:24 > 2:33:27importantly she has to beat those athletes and deliver in an event
2:33:27 > 2:33:31where things can go wrong, as we've seen in the past. With Katarina
2:33:31 > 2:33:34Johnson-Thompson it's never going to be straight and study. It's always
2:33:34 > 2:33:38going to be a roller-coaster ride and you know what, that's why we
2:33:38 > 2:33:44watch sport. That's why we watch sport, for its unpredictability.
2:33:44 > 2:33:49First gold medal of the championships for the home team and
2:33:49 > 2:33:51congratulations from Katarina Johnson-Thompson from all of the
2:33:51 > 2:33:57other competitors.It wasn't a quick race, it wasn't a quick 800 metres,
2:33:57 > 2:34:04Katarina Johnson-Thompson comfortable in 2.16 four stop those
2:34:04 > 2:34:08two switched positions overall and Dadic hang onto the silver medal
2:34:08 > 2:34:13position ahead of Rodriguez, but gold for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
2:34:17 > 2:34:21So flip second and third in the overall standings as Ivona Dadic
2:34:21 > 2:34:29able to hold on for the silver medal ahead of Rodriguez of Cuba. Out in
2:34:29 > 2:34:31front and comfortably so, Katarina Johnson-Thompson winning that gold
2:34:31 > 2:34:36medal.
2:34:39 > 2:34:43medal. Gabby Logan Matt congratulations, you are world
2:34:43 > 2:34:45champion, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and that will sound pretty good to
2:34:45 > 2:34:49her arrears because she's come close, she's had her wobbles in
2:34:49 > 2:34:51major championships. It doesn't matter who was there today, she beat
2:34:51 > 2:34:56the field and did what she had to do.She did what she had to do, she
2:34:56 > 2:35:01raised her game, she's improved as a competitor and that's been the bit
2:35:01 > 2:35:10that was lacking. Today, she has been the I hope she beat, -- she's
2:35:10 > 2:35:16been the Kat I hoped she would be. Today, she was gutsy and I love that
2:35:16 > 2:35:19and I hope she believes this is going to be the springboard to a
2:35:19 > 2:35:25very, very exciting season. She has put her stall out there. She will do
2:35:25 > 2:35:28the Commonwealth Games and European Championships and this could be the
2:35:28 > 2:35:34year that she comes away with a bag of medals.
2:35:34 > 2:35:37GABBY LOGAN: Indeed and this is an important
2:35:37 > 2:35:40point, it could be the stepping stone, the springboard this season
2:35:40 > 2:35:43for her to cement and to put together three big competitions, as
2:35:43 > 2:35:49the knees have articulated there, the Commonwealth and Europeans, that
2:35:49 > 2:35:53when she goes into a World Championship year she brings that
2:35:53 > 2:35:58experience with her.I really like the way this four year cycle is that
2:35:58 > 2:36:03of athletes to take this year, work on some things so that at the end of
2:36:03 > 2:36:05the day it's about the World Championships the Olympic Games,
2:36:05 > 2:36:10outdoors, and that's what every athlete once who has that potential.
2:36:10 > 2:36:14She has certainly showed years ago that she has the potential, so this
2:36:14 > 2:36:17is a great stepping stone in the right direction. As I said
2:36:17 > 2:36:21yesterday, this was going to be critical for her to have that
2:36:21 > 2:36:25success here. It's not something I'm sure that she'd like to talk about
2:36:25 > 2:36:31in the past, it was always there for her. You've got to get past and get
2:36:31 > 2:36:34beyond the mistakes and be able to string together a great performance
2:36:34 > 2:36:39and show the best version of yourself against the best in the
2:36:39 > 2:36:42world and against the rest of the world and she was able to do that
2:36:42 > 2:36:47here. It bodes well for the future. She's put some demons to bet there
2:36:47 > 2:36:50important and now she has become a world champion it will make it much
2:36:50 > 2:36:54easier for her to go into the major championships and think, I can do
2:36:54 > 2:36:57this, I can win it. You have to win it somewhere and at some point in
2:36:57 > 2:37:04order to go on and have the successes and this was the perfect
2:37:04 > 2:37:07time for Kat to do that and it's wonderful to see across-the-board
2:37:07 > 2:37:09she had a pretty good time again. She wasn't exceptional in some of
2:37:09 > 2:37:13her she didn't events, need to be today. She got it done and was an
2:37:13 > 2:37:16exceptional champion to watch. Katharine Merry is doing the stadium
2:37:16 > 2:37:22interview with Kat and we will hear from her speaking shortly but let's
2:37:22 > 2:37:31have a look at this long jump competition. Steve Backley.
2:37:31 > 2:37:33Is Johnson-Thompson continues her celebration, the long jump
2:37:33 > 2:37:50continues. There has been no change, round three. He's limping away,
2:37:50 > 2:37:57Samaai, he may be hurt.He probably took a sting there. He seems to be
2:37:57 > 2:38:05all right. Great speed. Just the way the foot hit the sand and then it
2:38:05 > 2:38:10recoils, that's probably what he's done. He's hyperextended the near
2:38:10 > 2:38:15little bit as its hit the sand so that's probably what has done it.
2:38:15 > 2:38:22Hopefully he can run it off.8.05, a season's best for Samirah I, he
2:38:22 > 2:38:32stays in second place. -- for Samaai. Mokoena, ten years since he
2:38:32 > 2:38:38Wing this title, languishing slightly.
2:38:38 > 2:38:42slightly. 7.53 and that's still under, it's a foul anyway and that's
2:38:42 > 2:38:51the end of his competition. So South Africa, an ex-champion may be making
2:38:51 > 2:39:01way to two youngsters, Samaai. Mokoena there, Manyonga and Samaai
2:39:01 > 2:39:07looking like they'll take his title. Commonwealth Games contenders.
2:39:07 > 2:39:11GABBY LOGAN: Let's hear from the new world indoor
2:39:11 > 2:39:16pentathlon champion, sounds good, doesn't it, with JJ Chalmers.
2:39:16 > 2:39:22It's a real honour to get to say world champion.Yeah, I can't
2:39:22 > 2:39:28believe it, actually. Doing it at home is something I dream of doing.
2:39:28 > 2:39:34I'm so happy I got to rectify it. I'm happy I got the opportunity.Can
2:39:34 > 2:39:38you put into words the emotions here? There must be a real wash
2:39:38 > 2:39:40between everything from jubilation through to
2:39:40 > 2:39:42between everything from jubilation through to release, perhaps.Yeah,
2:39:42 > 2:39:45for sure. All my family are here today and that's something that
2:39:45 > 2:39:49normally happens. I went through a hard year last year towards the end
2:39:49 > 2:39:55of the year and I wanted my family to see me achieve something, so I'm
2:39:55 > 2:39:59happy they got to be here and witnessed it, every event all
2:39:59 > 2:40:02afternoon. It's something I can't believe, really.That's the thing
2:40:02 > 2:40:06they get to see here today, but you're away and fans working so
2:40:06 > 2:40:09hard. Can you give us some sort of idea of the level of sacrifice it
2:40:09 > 2:40:14takes to become a world champion? Yeah, it's been very difficult
2:40:14 > 2:40:19especially last year. I had to leave my two dogs in the hands of my mum.
2:40:19 > 2:40:23The dogs have got very fat now! To come home and see them, it's very
2:40:23 > 2:40:28lonely out there in France. Not only have my left my family and friends
2:40:28 > 2:40:33but the language barrier is different as well -- is difficult as
2:40:33 > 2:40:37well.It's early days but can you begin to think about how much of the
2:40:37 > 2:40:40springboard this could be, particularly for the outdoors?Yeah,
2:40:40 > 2:40:45this is what I wanted, I wanted to start winning medals and hopefully
2:40:45 > 2:40:48this is the start of something. We've got the Commonwealth Games
2:40:48 > 2:40:52next month. It's something I want to begin to do and thankfully got my
2:40:52 > 2:40:56first competition come first international competition.
2:40:56 > 2:41:01Fantastic, thank you for talking to us. Go and enjoy yourself.Thank you
2:41:01 > 2:41:06very much. STEVE CRAM:
2:41:06 > 2:41:06very much. STEVE CRAM:
2:41:06 > 2:41:10Well done, Kat, everyone is very proud of you. A medal for Great
2:41:10 > 2:41:14Britain and well-deserved as well. She's had to wait a while but it
2:41:14 > 2:41:18makes it even more sweet, I'm sure. We moved to the 400 metres
2:41:18 > 2:41:22semifinals and what a tough one to begin with four Eilidh Doyle. You've
2:41:22 > 2:41:26seen the Springer, who is produced a superfast time this year and this
2:41:26 > 2:41:34very talented young American here, Wembley, of the United States. She's
2:41:34 > 2:41:37a great person for Eilidh Doyle to work off -- Shakima Wimbley. Only
2:41:37 > 2:41:43the first two into the
2:41:43 > 2:41:45the first two into the final and Eilidh Doyle knows she's got a tall
2:41:45 > 2:41:50order to take those two on outside although Lias brother looked as
2:41:50 > 2:41:53though she was working harder than her season's best might have
2:41:53 > 2:42:00suggested. -- Lea Sprunger.
2:42:00 > 2:42:06suggested. -- Lea Sprunger. The Lithuanian in lane three.
2:42:07 > 2:42:10Lithuanian in lane three. Ukrainian setting a new personal best in
2:42:10 > 2:42:19qualifying for this semifinal. Bezekova from the Slovak Republic.
2:42:19 > 2:42:21Bezekova from the Slovak Republic. I don't think Eilidh Doyle is going to
2:42:21 > 2:42:26be able to necessarily match the two for pace. The only thing that may
2:42:26 > 2:42:29happen is they may reason each other and she just needs to be there to
2:42:29 > 2:42:33pick up pieces as well, if they overcook this and Lea Sprunger a
2:42:33 > 2:42:42little vulnerable. I was impressed with Shakima Wimbley. So Eilidh
2:42:42 > 2:42:47Doyle trying to make it through to the 400 finals. Zoey Clark yet to
2:42:47 > 2:42:58come on the other semis.
2:43:03 > 2:43:06Watching 4-lane infringements, which we saw happen in the men's event.
2:43:06 > 2:43:13Eilidh Doyle has started pretty well down the back straight. As expected,
2:43:13 > 2:43:22Lea Sprunger and Shakima Wimbley have done out quick. Sprunger will
2:43:22 > 2:43:30try to come across. Sprunger allows Wimbley to control it and Eilidh
2:43:30 > 2:43:37Doyle has the inside curve. These three with a metre or so, the
2:43:37 > 2:43:42Lithuanian in green and yellow. Look at Wembley, controlling this from
2:43:42 > 2:43:46the front, those long legs of hers stretching out. Lias brother might
2:43:46 > 2:43:54just fade in the home straight. Sprunger goes away, Wimbley will win
2:43:54 > 2:43:57this from Sprunger, that's the form book right there and Eilidh Doyle in
2:43:57 > 2:44:00third place. She didn't do anything wrong, Eilidh Doyle, that's as good
2:44:00 > 2:44:05as she could have hoped for there. She got herself in a decent position
2:44:05 > 2:44:09and was there, ready, if Sprunger or Wimbley were to get it wrong and
2:44:09 > 2:44:12fade but they didn't, they stayed strong and in the end Eilidh Doyle
2:44:12 > 2:44:16was third will stop the form book said that was what was going to
2:44:16 > 2:44:20happen.
2:44:20 > 2:44:24happen.The stadium has fallen silent, but there's nothing to be
2:44:24 > 2:44:29ashamed of. She ran to her abilities. Sprunger and Wimbley were
2:44:29 > 2:44:33the favourites to take the two automatic qualifying places.
2:44:33 > 2:44:40Sprunger is the quickest non-American this year in the world.
2:44:42 > 2:44:45Sprunger, we thought she might fade a little bit but she's been running
2:44:45 > 2:44:49so well this season, the tall Swiss athlete and Eilidh Doyle unable to
2:44:49 > 2:44:57close it. It's not all over yet because two, no, it's just the first
2:44:57 > 2:44:59two straight through to the final, there are no fastest losers. So
2:44:59 > 2:45:04Eilidh Doyle will not go through. Wimbley and Sprunger. Doyle unable
2:45:04 > 2:45:08to close the gap. It goes according to the form book. It was a good,
2:45:08 > 2:45:12clean race. She didn't do anything wrong in that race. She got in a
2:45:12 > 2:45:20good position but was unable to close on Sprunger. The time 51.34,
2:45:20 > 2:45:2451.71, a bit slower than Eilidh Doyle's season best but we'll get
2:45:24 > 2:45:29her views on how she figures that third place looks.
2:45:29 > 2:45:32beautiful gold, for Katarina Johnson-Thompson here in Birmingham.
2:45:32 > 2:45:41A solid performers, are you happy? Yes, I knew it would be very tough
2:45:41 > 2:45:47with the American in that race and Sprunger. It would have been great
2:45:47 > 2:45:55to make the final but this is all a process to the Commonwealth Games.
2:45:55 > 2:46:00You've had a great solid run, commie beanpole at point. A lot of stuff to
2:46:00 > 2:46:06take forward to the Commonwealth is. Death at that. Trying to work on
2:46:06 > 2:46:11that first 200 so I could be like that out on the hurdles. I need to
2:46:11 > 2:46:15get that the hurdles now. You've been great to watch, thanks for
2:46:15 > 2:46:15talking
2:46:15 > 2:46:21been great to watch, thanks for talking to us..
2:46:21 > 2:46:27COMMENTATOR: Lawson, 7.92, in sixth place. He is not guaranteed a
2:46:27 > 2:46:31further three jobs if peoples 's finger out. Sixth place. Only eight
2:46:31 > 2:46:35get a further three jobs so it's not guaranteed. That may be slightly
2:46:35 > 2:46:41better. He's very quick. Sub ten second 100-metre sprint. Not using
2:46:41 > 2:46:51it to great effect here. May be creeping over eight metres.I think
2:46:51 > 2:46:55that will be enough to get him through to the top eight and getting
2:46:55 > 2:46:58those extra two jumps, get him to the fourth and fifth round. Only
2:46:58 > 2:47:07four athletes progressing to six. Up into third place.Real pressure
2:47:07 > 2:47:13moment here for the outdoor world champion, Luvo Manyonga, who has to
2:47:13 > 2:47:20get into the top eight here. Third attempt. Oh, look at that! He's a
2:47:20 > 2:47:28class apart. That looked really in control. It's way beyond eight
2:47:28 > 2:47:36metres.As casual as you like! Corrected his runway. The upper body
2:47:36 > 2:47:39is upright. Rotates the arms and into a great landing position.
2:47:39 > 2:47:46That's class, that's class. It is class indeed. He needed to deliver,
2:47:46 > 2:47:52made the adjustment. 8.33 takes the lead. At the halfway stage.
2:47:52 > 2:47:57Brilliant jump for Manyonga.Second of three semifinals and Eilidh Doyle
2:47:57 > 2:48:01does not go through from the first, but Zoey Clark will try for Great
2:48:01 > 2:48:04Britain and Northern Ireland here. Not the worst semifinal for
2:48:04 > 2:48:12Stephenie Ann McPherson, she'll be strong in this one. There is Clark.
2:48:12 > 2:48:17This was supposed to be just preparation for the Commonwealth
2:48:17 > 2:48:21Games. That was the target. Running so well on the brink of making a
2:48:21 > 2:48:27final. Stephanie McPherson perhaps facing the wrong way. She's getting
2:48:27 > 2:48:36better. So experienced. Madiea Ghafoor, the Dutch champion. Again,
2:48:36 > 2:48:45very powerful athlete.
2:48:45 > 2:48:47very powerful athlete. Justyna Swiety-Ersetic here. Perhaps got it
2:48:47 > 2:48:51slightly wrong in the heats, lest it very late. That is her trademark but
2:48:51 > 2:48:58you can't leave too much to do here. Raphaela Boaheng Lukudo of Italy
2:48:58 > 2:49:07goes in lane two and only inside the German champion Nadine Gonska.
2:49:07 > 2:49:10Just two go through, no fastest losers here. Three semifinals and
2:49:10 > 2:49:18Zoey Clark, lane six, a good lane she has courtesy of her victory in
2:49:18 > 2:49:27the first round. McPherson just inside and Madiea Ghafoor, her main
2:49:27 > 2:49:30challenge will come from there. Britain have only had three
2:49:30 > 2:49:36finalists in this event. Sally Gunnell in 1989. Catherine Murphy in
2:49:36 > 2:49:432003. Katrina Cox in 2012. We are hearing that Leah Springer has been
2:49:43 > 2:49:49disqualified -- Lea Sprunger has been disqualified for a lane
2:49:49 > 2:49:54infringement. We've seen it happen before and it has happened to, if
2:49:54 > 2:49:56not one of the favourites, one who certainly could have challenged for
2:49:56 > 2:50:04a medal. So Eilidh Doyle will go through to that final. Not official
2:50:04 > 2:50:11yet, but... Good news from Eilidh Doyle's point of view. Second
2:50:11 > 2:50:20semifinal of the women's 400 metres. Zoey Clark on the outside, Stephenie
2:50:20 > 2:50:24Ann McPherson chasing her down. Madiea Ghafoor in the bright orange
2:50:24 > 2:50:30vest of the Netherlands with Justyna Swiety-Ersetic. You can get in the
2:50:30 > 2:50:34best position as they break and hit the band? Stephenie Ann McPherson
2:50:34 > 2:50:40looks to be in front as she round the bend but Swiety-Ersetic is
2:50:40 > 2:50:43running well for Poland. The Jamaican Stephenie Ann McPherson
2:50:43 > 2:50:48running a little wide there around the bend but Zoey Clark in a decent
2:50:48 > 2:50:50place at the moment. Stephenie Ann McPherson out in front, two go
2:50:50 > 2:50:54through only from this. Madiea Ghafoor chasing down Zoey Clark.
2:50:54 > 2:50:58Zoey Clark glances at the screen. Stephenie Ann McPherson out at the
2:50:58 > 2:51:08moment. A strong finish for the Polish athlete, Swiety-Ersetic.
2:51:08 > 2:51:13Stephenie Ann McPherson takes it. Oh, so close at the line! Justyna
2:51:13 > 2:51:18Swiety-Ersetic was getting closer and closer all the time. Clark
2:51:18 > 2:51:23didn't fade and she looks to the board and we look to our computers
2:51:23 > 2:51:29and that was close. I wonder if Swiety-Ersetic got it for Poland.
2:51:29 > 2:51:37McPherson is safely through and we wait.I wish Zoey hadn't spent so
2:51:37 > 2:51:40much time looking at the screen in the back straight. She looked
2:51:40 > 2:51:46comfortable and if she concentrated more... She tried to respond to
2:51:46 > 2:51:50Swiety-Ersetic coming through. She seems in control and then all of a
2:51:50 > 2:51:55sudden realises, hang on, Swiety-Ersetic is there, tried to
2:51:55 > 2:52:00respond, really hard to respond so late and on the lean, Swiety-Ersetic
2:52:00 > 2:52:06has got the verdict, not by much. I think three thousandths we're
2:52:06 > 2:52:11seeing. What a shame because Zoey would have looked at that semi when
2:52:11 > 2:52:14it was drawn and thought, I had a great chance to go through. It was
2:52:14 > 2:52:20close but was it a slightly early lean? She was learning from five
2:52:20 > 2:52:24metres out, Zoey Clark and Swiety-Ersetic finishing strongly.
2:52:24 > 2:52:28Zoey Clark still had plenty to give but it's that change of pace and at
2:52:28 > 2:52:31this pace you can't quite inject that when you're running.It's hard
2:52:31 > 2:52:34to respond when someone comes along side you. You're trying to maintain
2:52:34 > 2:52:42anyway. It's been flipped. MacPherson has been disqualified.
2:52:42 > 2:52:49Stephenie Ann McPherson has been disqualified than aware it was, it
2:52:49 > 2:52:53was the first bend, I was watching her and she took a couple of steps.
2:52:53 > 2:52:59MacPherson on the first bend, I'm convinced that's where it was.It
2:52:59 > 2:53:03seemed as if it were agony for the British. She tried to respond there,
2:53:03 > 2:53:10Clark. You can see it and that dip and Swiety-Ersetic tried to take it.
2:53:10 > 2:53:14Stephenie Ann McPherson has been disqualified. We saw in the men's
2:53:14 > 2:53:18400 metres earlier today mass disqualifications and Eilidh Doyle
2:53:18 > 2:53:22has gone through because of a personification of Lea Sprunger. In
2:53:22 > 2:53:27the second semifinal, Zoey Clark will go through with Justyna
2:53:27 > 2:53:30Swiety-Ersetic because Stephenie Ann McPherson, it is official now, she
2:53:30 > 2:53:32has been disqualified. Zoey Clark and Eilidh Doyle both going through
2:53:32 > 2:53:37to the final and Zoey Clark talking to JJ.Zoey Clark,
2:53:37 > 2:53:39to the final and Zoey Clark talking to JJ.Zoey Clark, I can say, it is
2:53:39 > 2:53:43official that you are in second place, through to the final. What a
2:53:43 > 2:53:48swing of emotion. It's a bit crazy. It was so close between me and the
2:53:48 > 2:53:51other girl on the line and I thought I'd missed out. I wasn't sure what
2:53:51 > 2:53:56to think now.Let me know what you're thinking on that home
2:53:56 > 2:53:59straight as you saw her coming into your vision. You seemed to double
2:53:59 > 2:54:05down a bit.I think I didn't really get that race right. I eased off a
2:54:05 > 2:54:08bit too much and Stu was coming through strong. It's hard to find
2:54:08 > 2:54:12that extra gear once you already kind of held off a bit. I guess
2:54:12 > 2:54:17we've got another chance to redeem myself tomorrow. You into a final to
2:54:17 > 2:54:22World Championships, had does feel? Amazing to be in the final in an
2:54:22 > 2:54:26individual event. It's the first to me, so I'm really delighted.What a
2:54:26 > 2:54:31way to get in! It was fantastic to watch. Best of luck. Thanks very
2:54:31 > 2:54:31much, thank you.
2:54:31 > 2:54:36watch. Best of luck.Thanks very much, thank you.There's
2:54:36 > 2:54:41confirmation of the first semifinal. Eilidh Doyle is now there. I can't
2:54:41 > 2:54:47really see where Lea Sprunger was disqualified. I'd avidly sought
2:54:47 > 2:54:54McPherson over the line. We have two bricks in the final.Back to this
2:54:54 > 2:55:00long jump with Manyonga in front. He's taken the lead away from the
2:55:00 > 2:55:08Cuban. File in the third round but now four. What a huge response from
2:55:08 > 2:55:17the youngster. 8.33.
2:55:17 > 2:55:19the youngster. 8.33. Joanne Miguel Echevarria has taken it back to him.
2:55:19 > 2:55:26The audacity of the young man. Just the competitive nature, the ability
2:55:26 > 2:55:34to respond. Absolutely superb. What is the distance? He's clapping. 8.3
2:55:34 > 2:55:38six. He goes into the lead with a personal best performance in the
2:55:38 > 2:55:43fourth round. What a brilliant jump that was from the Young Cuban. But
2:55:43 > 2:55:54Luvo Manyonga has two fouls and 8.33. Chasing that lead. Well, if
2:55:54 > 2:56:02it's a white flag, it looks long. It is! Manyonga, great responding jump.
2:56:02 > 2:56:07What a phenomenal competition, it ages on and edges on. That looks
2:56:07 > 2:56:14close on the board but he's got the white flag.Love how he runs free,
2:56:14 > 2:56:20love his extension. Brilliant on the board and a superb response to a
2:56:20 > 2:56:26huge leap from the Cuban, 8.3 six. He's stretching everything out of
2:56:26 > 2:56:34that now. Oh, this is going to be close! 8.44! A new world lead. Takes
2:56:34 > 2:56:43the lead. Two jumps remaining. The last semifinal. Phil Healy going for
2:56:43 > 2:56:51Ireland.
2:56:51 > 2:56:54Ireland. Courtney Okolo of the USA may well be the favourite here
2:56:54 > 2:56:58although Jenkins has the outside lane, the Jamaican didn't look too
2:56:58 > 2:57:04good to me in the qualification. Let's see who gets disqualified this
2:57:04 > 2:57:07time! One talking point is the lack of discipline of the athlete and
2:57:07 > 2:57:14also the fact we are having these finals ruined, really, the 400-metre
2:57:14 > 2:57:17races. It's becoming a bit of a lottery and so many of the big names
2:57:17 > 2:57:23will not be contesting it. That leaves the door open for others. It
2:57:23 > 2:57:31is up to the athletes not to compress --
2:57:31 > 2:57:39Is not super quick but quick enough. Jenkins trying to get going.
2:57:41 > 2:57:47Belimpasaki feeling her come to the side of her. Belimpasaki may
2:57:47 > 2:57:59challenge to get the second spot is Jenkins fades. 51.8 one.
2:57:59 > 2:58:03Jenkins fades. 51.8 one. Zoey Clark and Eilidh Doyle will join them. We
2:58:03 > 2:58:08have to wait and see in each race now, find out. We do the commentary
2:58:08 > 2:58:13and we do the replay and don't know if they've got through.Subject to
2:58:13 > 2:58:16conditions! I just saw Maria Brown sacking. She's got wide arms in her
2:58:16 > 2:58:24running style -- Maria Belimpasaki. She was keeping Jenkins further and
2:58:24 > 2:58:31further out. Phil Healy not going through their butt Okolo was fairly
2:58:31 > 2:58:38untroubled. I didn't see any lane infringements. The Greek athlete
2:58:38 > 2:58:42isn't good to look at what she ran quite cleverly because Jenkins is
2:58:42 > 2:58:45not the tidiest runner and she kept her lane and kept her out but
2:58:45 > 2:58:54nothing much to report there. Courtney Okolo pretty strong.Well,
2:58:54 > 2:58:58the 400 metres here in Birmingham continues to deliver all kinds of
2:58:58 > 2:59:03shocks and surprises. It really is turning into something of a lottery.
2:59:03 > 2:59:05After the heat this morning when we saw in the men's whole heat
2:59:05 > 2:59:10disqualified which has never happened before in the history of
2:59:10 > 2:59:14major championships, that a whole heat has been disqualified. We saw
2:59:14 > 2:59:16the two British athletes benefit from disqualifications and elevated
2:59:16 > 2:59:20to the final which will take place tomorrow evening. We have taken a
2:59:20 > 2:59:25close look at Stephenie Ann McPherson, the Jamaican, and her
2:59:25 > 2:59:29disqualification. Michael, cast your beady eyes over this.Yeah, this
2:59:29 > 2:59:36is... Denise and I were just saying, she is on the inside lane with the
2:59:36 > 2:59:41outside foot. That's a blatant! LAUGHTER
2:59:41 > 2:59:44Yeah, I mean, that's blatant. You can't get away with that. We wonder
2:59:44 > 2:59:47whether she may have known. I don't think she did because she's not
2:59:47 > 2:59:52looking down to see that clearly on the inside lane and that's just a
2:59:52 > 2:59:55major violation and she's still on the lane,
2:59:55 > 2:59:56major violation and she's still on the lane, on the line rather. That's
2:59:56 > 2:59:59unfortunate because she was one of the athletes that would figure into
2:59:59 > 3:00:04the medals. We were saying, I don't know if there's something about the
3:00:04 > 3:00:09outside lane and the way the track is but athletes seem to have a lane
3:00:09 > 3:00:12violation as they come out of that bank. They come down the hill into
3:00:12 > 3:00:17the straight. It looks that way. Five has been predominantly an issue
3:00:17 > 3:00:22but we need to check that out. That moment you're carrying, I don't know
3:00:22 > 3:00:25whether they are just wobbling out of balance or something but it seems
3:00:25 > 3:00:30to be a common thread. We touched on it earlier, it doesn't looks like
3:00:30 > 3:00:32the banks are too high so you wouldn't expect that. There are
3:00:32 > 3:00:36certain tracks around the world where it is a bit like a velodrome.
3:00:36 > 3:00:39Where is here it's not like that but also its confusing as to why that
3:00:39 > 3:00:42happens.
3:00:42 > 3:00:46Let's look at the long jump competition, which is really hotting
3:00:46 > 3:00:50up. We had a wonderful
3:00:50 > 3:00:51competition, which is really hotting up. We had a wonderful wonderful few
3:00:51 > 3:00:53minutes where Manyonga responded to Echevarria with this fantastic
3:00:53 > 3:00:59charm.He's shown his class here, the reason he's the world champion
3:00:59 > 3:01:04from last year. He has a great drive through for his run-up and manages
3:01:04 > 3:01:09with a slightly extended foot in front of him to really load it in a
3:01:09 > 3:01:13positive way to come through the distance. If you put out your foot
3:01:13 > 3:01:16in front of you and drag through it's a lot of pressure on your
3:01:16 > 3:01:20hamstrings. He is able to control that and produce these fantastic
3:01:20 > 3:01:25jumps. And it technically is well looking really good and completing
3:01:25 > 3:01:30by getting his legs out in front of him. It's impressive to see and on
3:01:30 > 3:01:34the board, he's fixed the problem is slightly and do you know what I
3:01:34 > 3:01:37reckon going into the last couple we might see a really big one because
3:01:37 > 3:01:40his early fouls were massive, so it will be very exciting to see where
3:01:40 > 3:01:45he can go.Can I say very quickly, who said it was a good idea having
3:01:45 > 3:01:50Greg Rutherford watching this men's final? He's jittery, he's been a
3:01:50 > 3:01:56nightmare!They
3:01:59 > 3:02:01nightmare!They were not jumping very far and it was becoming a
3:02:01 > 3:02:04problem for me! I need them to jump far.And they did, they're
3:02:04 > 3:02:06delivering, he's delivering all kinds of insight for us. Thank you
3:02:06 > 3:02:07very much, Greg. COMMENTATOR:
3:02:07 > 3:02:13A brilliant competition, I'm sure Greg is enjoying it plenty. Dendy,
3:02:13 > 3:02:178.02 so far, only four athletes will compete in the final round. Dendy
3:02:17 > 3:02:22isn't amongst them as we stand. That might change it. It's a much longer
3:02:22 > 3:02:29jump. And he knows it. Dendy so far his best, 8.02 in the second round.
3:02:29 > 3:02:35That's a massive improvement. For the reigning world indoor champion
3:02:35 > 3:02:41from two years ago. That the leg shoot, it's all about leg shoot.
3:02:41 > 3:02:45Great speed across the board but the position he gets, he puts his feet
3:02:45 > 3:02:51out in front of him and manages to get his centre of gravity over,
3:02:51 > 3:02:56fantastic. Another personal best from another athlete, 8.4 two.It's
3:02:56 > 3:03:04starting to wake up, finally, in this penultimate round. Lawson on
3:03:04 > 3:03:098.02, the US champion left wanting a little bit here but that's better as
3:03:09 > 3:03:17well. Well, really, it's taken four or five jumps for the athletes to
3:03:17 > 3:03:20find their rhythm, find their feet and unleash some competitive
3:03:20 > 3:03:26instinct. Lawson looks as though he's improved. I remind you that
3:03:26 > 3:03:30only four athletes will take an effort in the final round. There's
3:03:30 > 3:03:38another cut. Lawson has gone into fourth, with 8.1 four, one jump
3:03:38 > 3:03:49remaining. Well, what a competitive effort we saw in round four, 8.36
3:03:49 > 3:03:53from Echevarria, a personal best. The 19-year-old, oh, what has he
3:03:53 > 3:04:00done here? Well, you mentioned fearless earlier, Tony. That is an
3:04:00 > 3:04:07enormous jump. This is going to be close to taking the lead back. He's
3:04:07 > 3:04:11a young man who doesn't respect his elders. He's getting in there and
3:04:11 > 3:04:15jumping with abandonment. It's fantastic to see! What a great,
3:04:15 > 3:04:20great competition. Plenty of room on the board. He is safe as houses. And
3:04:20 > 3:04:28fell back on this. I'm keen to see that landing again. 8.46, a new
3:04:28 > 3:04:32world lead. What an amazing competition. It's incredible you can
3:04:32 > 3:04:35jump a personal best, you've gone further than you've ever been before
3:04:35 > 3:04:39in your life, somebody jumps further than that and then you respond again
3:04:39 > 3:04:43and jump further still. That is class, that's incredible competitive
3:04:43 > 3:04:50edge.The 8.44 from Manyonga, a Commonwealth record, African record,
3:04:50 > 3:04:54it was a world lead but it's now in second place here at the fifth
3:04:54 > 3:04:59round. Well, that's enormous, but it's another foul from Manyonga.
3:04:59 > 3:05:12He's enjoying himself. Another big jump.We've got 8.46, 8.42 metres,
3:05:12 > 3:05:19it's incredible. 8.44 in there, what an awesome, awesome competition. Not
3:05:19 > 3:05:24since the days of Carl Lewis and Powell have we seen that kind of
3:05:24 > 3:05:32competitive jumping. He's jumped out of the pit, nearly. He says he
3:05:32 > 3:05:35doesn't put on a limit on how far he can jump. Really enjoying this
3:05:35 > 3:05:41competition. The final round about to come.
3:05:41 > 3:05:44STEVE CRAM: A great long jump competition
3:05:44 > 3:05:49continuing, some more news from the 400 metres. Belimpasaki has been
3:05:49 > 3:05:55disqualified so these will be the finalists, we think. Wimbley and
3:05:55 > 3:06:03Okolo, the two Americans. Eilidh Doyle and Zoey Clark from Britain.
3:06:03 > 3:06:10After all the disqualifications, these are the ones who are left.
3:06:11 > 3:06:14Extraordinary, it's almost making it a bit farcical, you think of the big
3:06:14 > 3:06:18names who have gone, their own fault, but we'll be back for the
3:06:18 > 3:06:25men's 400 metres semifinals.Yeah, Dendy, his waiting for that cone to
3:06:25 > 3:06:29be removed before he gets the all clear that he can jump. This is the
3:06:29 > 3:06:34final round, only four athletes remaining. Dendy and Lawson, both of
3:06:34 > 3:06:40the United States in third and fourth place, it's the young man,
3:06:40 > 3:06:43the Cuban, Echevarria. Two centimetres ahead of Manyonga, the
3:06:43 > 3:06:48world outdoor champion.
3:06:50 > 3:06:56world outdoor champion. So the cone has been removed. Dendy, a cry for
3:06:56 > 3:07:03support. A big PB in that fifth round, has he got more? He's capable
3:07:03 > 3:07:10of doing this. But whatever he does, others can respond. So Dendy, last
3:07:10 > 3:07:21chance to get into the lead. He likes it a lot. It's a valid jump.I
3:07:21 > 3:07:27think he didn't quite plan to his foot on the board. -- he didn't
3:07:27 > 3:07:31quite planned his foot on the board. Just that forward lean,
3:07:31 > 3:07:41deceleration, didn't really plant his foot. A difficult position to
3:07:41 > 3:07:46take off from. There is no room for error at this level as Dendy waits
3:07:46 > 3:07:52for these measurement. It is eight what -- it is 8.18, no improvement,
3:07:52 > 3:07:56in bronze as we stand but his team-mate, Lawson, can push him down
3:07:56 > 3:08:04the sport. Here is Lawson. Dendy at the moment 8.42, in bronze. Jarrion
3:08:04 > 3:08:07Lawson, the US outdoor champion, came into this competition with the
3:08:07 > 3:08:14second best on the world list, 8.38, from the US trials. We know he's
3:08:14 > 3:08:22capable. Last chance to get into the medals. A foul. Lawson, fourth place
3:08:22 > 3:08:31for him here. 8.14 his best and he clears the way, Americans celebrate
3:08:31 > 3:08:36with third and fourth. I bet they can't believe that. 8.42, further
3:08:36 > 3:08:41than anyone had jumped in the world coming into this competition, in
3:08:41 > 3:08:45third place, would you believe it. There is your two leaders, leader
3:08:45 > 3:08:51and second place, I should say, the two men have exchanged leading
3:08:51 > 3:08:52positions throughout this competition on a number of
3:08:52 > 3:09:02occasions. First up it is the
3:09:02 > 3:09:03occasions. First up it is the event leader, Juan Miguel Echevarria. I
3:09:03 > 3:09:08wish I'd picked him now as my one to watch because we are going to see a
3:09:08 > 3:09:17lot of this young man. Can he go further?I think he tried so hard, I
3:09:17 > 3:09:22think he was behind the board there. 8.46, he's in the lead but there's
3:09:22 > 3:09:26one more jump. He just has to sit and wait to see if he's hanging on
3:09:26 > 3:09:32to that gold medal. Yeah, quite a bit between him and the board there.
3:09:32 > 3:09:36You can't force it. It's a good example of you can't force it and he
3:09:36 > 3:09:41is way behind the board. You can't force it, but I tell you what, you
3:09:41 > 3:09:46have to respect him for giving it a good go. He's in the lead. Can he
3:09:46 > 3:09:50hang onto it? 19-year-old, will he become the world champion in the
3:09:50 > 3:09:56long jump?There's nothing
3:09:59 > 3:10:01long jump? There's nothing more he can do about it, he has to stand and
3:10:01 > 3:10:04watch, as Luvo Manyonga, who has his flag ready, a flag that has been
3:10:04 > 3:10:07used to celebrate gold medals in this competition on a number of
3:10:07 > 3:10:13occasions. Five times, Ivan Dodig Rosa has the young man Echevarria
3:10:13 > 3:10:16done enough? He's only two centimetres ahead of this man, Luvo
3:10:16 > 3:10:27Manyonga. 8.44. Final round, final jump, to change his fortune. Oh,
3:10:27 > 3:10:37that's a big jump! It's another foul though.Oh! Fantastic, fantastic,
3:10:37 > 3:10:39thank you, gentlemen, for the entertainment. What a great
3:10:39 > 3:10:45competition. An absolutely superb competition. The way it got better
3:10:45 > 3:10:49and better. Wow, we've seen a 19-year-old world indoor champion
3:10:49 > 3:10:56with a great distance. The Cubans have got a jumper again.
3:10:56 > 3:11:01Congratulating the young man of Cuba, Manyonga gives his
3:11:01 > 3:11:05congratulations as well. A potential superstar of the future, a surprise
3:11:05 > 3:11:11winner here. Looks to the heavens and its gold for Cuba and Echevarria
3:11:11 > 3:11:16in the men's long jump. GABBY LOGAN:
3:11:16 > 3:11:19Well, we have seen some characters in this long jump competition and
3:11:19 > 3:11:24we've seen real character from that man, Echevarria. Just 19 years old,
3:11:24 > 3:11:30previous best 8.28 outside, what a future he has.Absolutely, the
3:11:30 > 3:11:34Cubans have an rich history of great long jumpers and I tell you what, at
3:11:34 > 3:11:3819 years of age, to go out and do that is something really special. I
3:11:38 > 3:11:43would always say you can generally at 20 or 30 centimetres by the time
3:11:43 > 3:11:47you get outside. If we can do that we might see some real hot
3:11:47 > 3:11:50competitions coming this summer. It's a shame there's Motorola world
3:11:50 > 3:11:54or Olympic games outdoors this year because it really could be exciting
3:11:54 > 3:11:58-- there isn't another world or Olympic games outdoor this year.
3:11:58 > 3:12:02It's brilliant, when people get to see how things keep changing and how
3:12:02 > 3:12:05the battles play out during these long jump competitions. You can
3:12:05 > 3:12:09really get a feel for how exciting they are. That was one of the better
3:12:09 > 3:12:12ones we've had for quite a long time.Absolutely and I'm very
3:12:12 > 3:12:19passionate about the showcasing of field events. We've done it today,
3:12:19 > 3:12:23which is brilliant. Wow, what a competition. You know, it was of
3:12:23 > 3:12:29Olympic standard. It was fantastic. So impressive to see how he
3:12:29 > 3:12:33responded, Echevarria, to Manyonga, who kept putting in, kept fouling at
3:12:33 > 3:12:36first but then put in the big jumps and Echevarria had to pull out
3:12:36 > 3:12:40another one. Here is the winning jump.It can be incredibly difficult
3:12:40 > 3:12:44at times and it's something he that shows a real champion, when you can
3:12:44 > 3:12:47keep responding to every else around you. You can see here he's
3:12:47 > 3:12:52incredibly fast, he has a nice loping stride, attacks the board,
3:12:52 > 3:12:56beautiful upright position. If you can stop the over rotation you can
3:12:56 > 3:13:00really extend through into the bigger distances and it's something
3:13:00 > 3:13:05he's doing there, which as I say, in the summer... I was talking about
3:13:05 > 3:13:09Jerry and today and for whatever reason he didn't get it right. He
3:13:09 > 3:13:15jumped 8.38 at the Nationals or the US not that long ago but it wasn't
3:13:15 > 3:13:18happening today. I didn't expect to Dendy today, to come out with that
3:13:18 > 3:13:23real big amazing jump is a fantastic way to go out there and do it. We
3:13:23 > 3:13:27saw that with Jeff Henderson at the Olympic Games in 2016, much to my
3:13:27 > 3:13:31dismay, to suddenly catch one and it completely changes the dynamic of
3:13:31 > 3:13:35the field. It was a wonderful, wonderful competition to watch. I
3:13:35 > 3:13:40was on the edge of my seat, it was fantastic. Greenberg and we've been
3:13:40 > 3:13:43seeing some great long jump competitions over the last couple of
3:13:43 > 3:13:48years, Greg, and we are seeing fantastic young athletes like
3:13:48 > 3:13:52Echevarria coming up, Dendy, we've been waiting for him to explode and
3:13:52 > 3:13:56Lawson, last year he had a great competition. Is the long jump
3:13:56 > 3:14:02getting the competition -- is the long jump competition getting the
3:14:02 > 3:14:05attention it should? Are the people in the stands experiencing the long
3:14:05 > 3:14:11jump and the back and forth the way we get to see it? To see how
3:14:11 > 3:14:14exciting it really is.In the stadium is the best place to be
3:14:14 > 3:14:19viewing it and at home, sadly, we've spent many years of not seeing how
3:14:19 > 3:14:22it's unfolding. You go to Diamond League events and they are wrapped
3:14:22 > 3:14:26up in four jumps, these are the winners, these are the positions. To
3:14:26 > 3:14:30excite people we need to show exactly how the sport unfolds and
3:14:30 > 3:14:34exactly how the events go, because as we said, this was an incredible
3:14:34 > 3:14:42competition, a great one for people to see, and for people to say I want
3:14:42 > 3:14:44to be involved in the jumps because they are brilliant.Steve Backley
3:14:44 > 3:14:47can round it all up for us.What a thrilling competition, there is the
3:14:47 > 3:14:52final result, an historic one, Dendy the Proms, Manyonga, an African
3:14:52 > 3:15:00record, a Commonwealth record, but the Cuban, 8.44, seventh best ever.
3:15:00 > 3:15:05It was in UK allcomers' record, he beat Mike Powell's previous best
3:15:05 > 3:15:12which has stood for 25 years which puts into context. A brilliant
3:15:12 > 3:15:15performance from a 19-year-old, wonderful entertainment.The best
3:15:15 > 3:15:22event of the championships so far, the men's long jump. The men's 400
3:15:22 > 3:15:25metres has been decimated by those who have been disqualified. This is
3:15:25 > 3:15:35the first of three semifinals, those who are left.
3:15:35 > 3:15:37who are left. Javon Francis, Aldrich Bailey Junior of the United States
3:15:37 > 3:15:40in lane six. You think of those who we have lost, disqualified big
3:15:40 > 3:15:51names, Brenes, Taplin, Haroun. Steven Gayle and Alonzo Russell, all
3:15:51 > 3:15:55disqualified in the first round, 4-lane infringements. We've seen
3:15:55 > 3:16:02Lias Bronner and MacPherson disqualified in the women's
3:16:02 > 3:16:07semifinals -- Lea Sprunger. Everyone will be aware that a toe on the line
3:16:07 > 3:16:15and you are disqualified. The unforgiving rule 1:63.63.
3:16:19 > 3:16:20The poll finished very
3:16:20 > 3:16:23The poll finished very strongly in the first round. There's Aldrich
3:16:23 > 3:16:27Bailey jointly, second in the US championships behind Michael Cherry.
3:16:27 > 3:16:33Michael Cherry goes in the second semifinal. The Polish champion,
3:16:33 > 3:16:35Jacob Gish
3:16:37 > 3:16:43as it is in love athletics Championships these days, a strong
3:16:43 > 3:16:47Polish team. Jovan Francis have been part of the Jamaican squad for a
3:16:47 > 3:16:51while now. Took silver in Rio at the Olympic Games. Such a talented
3:16:51 > 3:16:57youngster, as was this man. Silver behind Karami James in London at the
3:16:57 > 3:17:05Olympic Games. As a 19-year-old, we got was 18, but 19. Patrik Sorm of
3:17:05 > 3:17:09the Czech Republic. One of the fastest losers who are advanced
3:17:09 > 3:17:18because of disqualifications. Lucas Bua, Spanish indoor champion. There
3:17:18 > 3:17:21is a theory that you should just jog round very slowly, stepping away
3:17:21 > 3:17:28from the lines and taking chances. Just two go through automatically
3:17:28 > 3:17:35straight to tomorrow's final. A lot of athletes have not been coping
3:17:35 > 3:17:39with the lanes indoors here.
3:17:45 > 3:17:52The first of three semifinals in the men's 400 metres. Bua, Patrik Sorm,
3:17:52 > 3:17:56Lech Walesa and toss, Jovan Francis, Jacob Katrina, Aldrich Bailey
3:17:56 > 3:18:00junior.
3:18:00 > 3:18:06A good start by Jovan Francis of Jamaica.
3:18:12 > 3:18:16Francis of Jamaica looking to get himself in a good position. The tiny
3:18:16 > 3:18:22figure of Miguel Santos. The barging and battering is there and sometimes
3:18:22 > 3:18:31not giving an inch to the big man from Poland. These three battling
3:18:31 > 3:18:39for the two positions. Look Santos in a position to try to challenge.
3:18:39 > 3:18:43Bailey just starting to tie it up will stop Santos comes through to
3:18:43 > 3:18:48take it and Santos and Bailey take perverse two places. The only two
3:18:48 > 3:18:52places and they will go through to the final. Very, very good race.
3:18:52 > 3:18:56Santos judged it well. What a talent he was as a youngster, and he'll
3:18:56 > 3:18:59have his chance here in the final tomorrow because he timed it well
3:18:59 > 3:19:02and came through to take it on the line from Aldrich Bailey but a very
3:19:02 > 3:19:13good race.Yeah, a lot happened there at the break which meant that
3:19:13 > 3:19:18Jacob has been really got on terms. Santos was patient and as strong as
3:19:18 > 3:19:21we've seen from him from a good little while. You're making the
3:19:21 > 3:19:27point that the quality... LAUGHTER
3:19:27 > 3:19:32Santos is saying, what are you doing? With real! By winning you get
3:19:32 > 3:19:39a better lane draw in the final. We've had this event is completely
3:19:39 > 3:19:41decimated by disqualifications. We'll wait to see if any happen in
3:19:41 > 3:19:47the semifinals. At least Luguelin Santos we know is at his best. A
3:19:47 > 3:19:54great 400-metre runner.It'll be nice to see the break at 200 metres.
3:19:54 > 3:19:58That's when so much happens in the 400 metres. Bailey was dying on his
3:19:58 > 3:20:06legs here. Santos takes the victory and his younger brother goes in one
3:20:06 > 3:20:10of the next semifinals, Juander Santos. Let's see if he can make it
3:20:10 > 3:20:14through to the final, as well. Bailey safely through, to bring to
3:20:14 > 3:20:19the ground. Unofficial results. We shall wait and see what it looks
3:20:19 > 3:20:25like Miguel and Santos and Aldrich Bailey are through to the final.
3:20:25 > 3:20:26like Miguel and Santos and Aldrich Bailey are through to the final.
3:20:26 > 3:20:29STUDIO: With the 400 metres, we really do have to say unofficial
3:20:29 > 3:20:33results because it might only be a matter of seconds before we find out
3:20:33 > 3:20:39who's disqualified. You were a bit worried about Bailey.Yes, because
3:20:39 > 3:20:42Bailey came off one of the corners and his foot came across the cone
3:20:42 > 3:20:47and I don't know why you would do that, given all of the
3:20:47 > 3:20:50qualifications and macro disqualifications we've seen. We may
3:20:50 > 3:20:54see something coming out from him with a DQ by his name. The lights
3:20:54 > 3:20:59are going down and the rostrum has been set up on the stage tonight.
3:20:59 > 3:21:03Last night it was on the infield but it's just to our right in the studio
3:21:03 > 3:21:07here and it is of course for the medal ceremony for the women's
3:21:07 > 3:21:12pentathlon. Just looking over there, I'm seeing Katarina Johnson-Thompson
3:21:12 > 3:21:16standing behind the gold medal rostrum. This really is a moment,
3:21:16 > 3:21:20and hopefully will be a pivotal moment, a seminal moment, in her
3:21:20 > 3:21:27career.Representing Cuba, Yang Ellis Rodriguez.
3:21:27 > 3:21:28career.Representing Cuba, Yang Ellis Rodriguez.Rodriguez taking
3:21:28 > 3:21:33the bronze medal, the Cuban. Just underperformed a little in the long
3:21:33 > 3:21:36jump. Lost a bit of ground on the woman who is about to collect the
3:21:36 > 3:21:44silver medal. A bronze medal well earned. No medals changing positions
3:21:44 > 3:21:50in the 800 metres. These three went in these positions. If only that the
3:21:50 > 3:22:01with a good long jump. Just worried. -- just worried Katarina
3:22:01 > 3:22:06Johnson-Thompson for a moment. Dadic able to make up the time in the 800.
3:22:06 > 3:22:13That was quite an achievement. This woman is about to be cheered to the
3:22:13 > 3:22:16rafters.Representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Katarina
3:22:16 > 3:22:21Johnson-Thompson. CHEERING
3:22:22 > 3:22:27To the top of the podium. Doesn't happen too often in a career through
3:22:27 > 3:22:30injury. She would admit underachievement on the biggest
3:22:30 > 3:22:40stage but here at the world indoor she takes gold.
3:22:40 > 3:22:41she takes gold.Ladies and gentlemen, the national anthem of
3:22:41 > 3:22:49Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
3:22:49 > 3:22:50# God save our gracious Queen
3:22:50 > 3:22:55# Long live our noble Queen
3:22:55 > 3:23:00# God save the Queen
3:23:00 > 3:23:04# Send her victorious
3:23:04 > 3:23:10# Happy and glorious
3:23:10 > 3:23:15# Long to reign over us
3:23:15 > 3:23:23# God save the Queen. #
3:23:23 > 3:23:23APPLAUSE
3:23:23 > 3:23:30APPLAUSE Nothing now but a smile on the face
3:23:30 > 3:23:34of Katarina Johnson-Thompson. They have now been 14 winners of this
3:23:34 > 3:23:40event going back to 1993, 14 different winners. Katarina
3:23:40 > 3:23:45Johnson-Thompson is the 14th. Bronze for Rodriguez, silver for Ivona
3:23:45 > 3:23:46Dadic and gold for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
3:23:46 > 3:23:51Dadic and gold for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
3:23:51 > 3:23:56STUDIO: One of those winners in the past of course was Jessica Ennis,
3:23:56 > 3:24:01back in 2010 in Doha. We'll know what happened to her. This can be a
3:24:01 > 3:24:04moment for Johnson-Thompson going forwards into those big global
3:24:04 > 3:24:08competitions where she knows she can quit together, she knows she can put
3:24:08 > 3:24:11the performance in. She can have my disappointment is along the way but
3:24:11 > 3:24:16it's about how you carry on throughout the day of this concept
3:24:16 > 3:24:20did, -- through the day of this competition.Hopefully a turning
3:24:20 > 3:24:21point in
3:24:21 > 3:24:22competition.Hopefully a turning point in her emotions about all the
3:24:22 > 3:24:26things that have gone before, that this is truly a moment to savour. We
3:24:26 > 3:24:30have had those roller-coaster moments but she has performed really
3:24:30 > 3:24:37well and she's earned that medal. She is grafted, worked hard, just
3:24:37 > 3:24:44reward.She's done it now and that's the relief. Relief is the big
3:24:44 > 3:24:50overriding sensation you have when you windage and beaches. It's all
3:24:50 > 3:24:53these maybes and ifs and things that can go wrong. By listening that
3:24:53 > 3:24:59goals right and you can have a kick on from that moment and go on to win
3:24:59 > 3:25:02more. 2010, we saw the start of Jessica Ennis coming through and
3:25:02 > 3:25:06doing the most incredible things she did and we all believe and I think
3:25:06 > 3:25:11we all know Kat can do that. She's questioned herself the last couple
3:25:11 > 3:25:15of years with injuries and the changes in training environment. She
3:25:15 > 3:25:20questioned whether she had what it takes to get the top position. Those
3:25:20 > 3:25:25questions, when you can find the answer, they are a big relief. And
3:25:25 > 3:25:28they are a weight off your mind as Gregg said. Hopefully the buoyancy
3:25:28 > 3:25:33that will take her into the next part of her preparation. The key is
3:25:33 > 3:25:38it becomes down to something practical at the end of the day.
3:25:38 > 3:25:42That is has she learned her lesson that allowed her to have the spring
3:25:42 > 3:25:46the group performs as she had today? Was it but it all just happened
3:25:46 > 3:25:49right today? Just like it happened wrong in the past. Or was it, this
3:25:49 > 3:25:53is what I did wrong in the past, this was my approach and what didn't
3:25:53 > 3:25:57work. This is what I did today and what does work for me. In order to
3:25:57 > 3:26:00duplicate this type of performance, you have to duplicate the same sort
3:26:00 > 3:26:05of setup, the same sort of preparation, mindset. You have to be
3:26:05 > 3:26:11able to do that, so while she was certainly celebrate this, she can
3:26:11 > 3:26:14reflect on, what did I do right? Relive this moment from a practical
3:26:14 > 3:26:18standpoint so she can apply this at the Commonwealth Games. Another
3:26:18 > 3:26:28success like this. And she will face Dadic again if they are both fit in
3:26:28 > 3:26:30Berlin in the European Championship in August. Another chance to say,
3:26:30 > 3:26:36yes, you might think you might be the up-and-coming one but I'm going
3:26:36 > 3:26:45to be sure again. It's a chance to put herself against them. She's been
3:26:45 > 3:26:47competing against these ladies for a while now but it's really about
3:26:47 > 3:26:52turning inwards and focusing on, what did I do right? What was that
3:26:52 > 3:26:56emotion, how did I keep it together? She's proved she's able to do that.
3:26:56 > 3:27:02We are heading out for the next of these 400 metre semifinals. Lee
3:27:02 > 3:27:08Thompson of Sheffield is out there in the semifinal and I think he was
3:27:08 > 3:27:13a product of a benefit of one of the disqualifications this morning,
3:27:13 > 3:27:18Steve grams. You will take this perhaps as a bonus but want to put
3:27:18 > 3:27:23himself right back there in the mix. COMMENTATOR: He did
3:27:23 > 3:27:24himself right back there in the mix. COMMENTATOR: He did benefit but he
3:27:24 > 3:27:28still ran well. This is his best ever Championships, just 20 years of
3:27:28 > 3:27:34age, from Sheffield. He's just seen one Thomson on the rostrum, so who
3:27:34 > 3:27:40knows what future he has? He's just starting his career. Huge
3:27:40 > 3:27:44opportunity for also of athletes here with so many disqualifications.
3:27:44 > 3:27:49I think there's been at least ten anyway. We've missed the two guys on
3:27:49 > 3:27:54the outside
3:27:54 > 3:27:57the outside which either two most impressive. They are lanes five and
3:27:57 > 3:28:03six. Thomson in lane three will obviously be doing his best to try
3:28:03 > 3:28:09to get on terms with them. See what happens and then as we've seen, you
3:28:09 > 3:28:14never know.
3:28:14 > 3:28:17never know. 46.23, superb performance in the British
3:28:17 > 3:28:21Championships to announce his arrival into the British team.
3:28:27 > 3:28:31I know what you are all thinking, you're watching the feet, anxious?
3:28:31 > 3:28:36I'm sure the athletes must and I'm sure they are beginning to realise
3:28:36 > 3:28:40what's going on. Thomson just lacking a bit of pace through this
3:28:40 > 3:28:45first 200 metres but he hasn't got to panic. Santos trying to get in
3:28:45 > 3:28:54there. Thomson will just have to pick some of these off here. 21.3
3:28:54 > 3:28:57through the first 200 metres, reasonably quick. The two best
3:28:57 > 3:29:10athletes here, Hooley source and Cherry. Oscar whose loss has been
3:29:10 > 3:29:15very impressive, challenged by Cherry. Those two are expected to
3:29:15 > 3:29:18win. Thomson has to settle for sixth. These two well was going to
3:29:18 > 3:29:24be the best. He's impressing me. I wasn't... To be fair, we've lost so
3:29:24 > 3:29:28many of the big names that now he's looking like a real contender for
3:29:28 > 3:29:37the gold medal. That was a quick semi-and barring any surprises, we
3:29:37 > 3:29:41will expect Husillos and Cherry to be contenders for the medals. Lee
3:29:41 > 3:29:44Thompson tried very hard and when you have to run wide, when you don't
3:29:44 > 3:29:48get involved in that first 200 metres, it's a long journey around
3:29:48 > 3:29:51the outside. But he's acquitted himself pretty well, particularly in
3:29:51 > 3:29:55Leeds, I thought. It'd be a bit tough to come back and emulate that
3:29:55 > 3:29:58in the semi-.We saw, as you are mentioning, the reason these two are
3:29:58 > 3:30:03a long way clear, Husillos and Cherry is we are missing athlete who
3:30:03 > 3:30:07perhaps would have been lifting the quality of this semifinal otherwise
3:30:07 > 3:30:13worried not for the disqualifications. Husillos and
3:30:13 > 3:30:18Cherry a long way clear. Good time by Husillos, he looking very
3:30:18 > 3:30:23impressive. Some come into the meetings in Championships and find
3:30:23 > 3:30:26good form at the championships. Husillos has been strongest season
3:30:26 > 3:30:38and seems to be peaking.Quick time, 45.6 nine. Here's a look back at the
3:30:38 > 3:30:47third round of the women's shot put final.
3:30:47 > 3:30:57final. 18.98 metres. A put the owned 19 metres. Great effort from her.
3:30:57 > 3:31:01She has thrown over 19 metres this year. Fourth in the World
3:31:01 > 3:31:06Championship last year.
3:31:06 > 3:31:11Maybe put a bit of spice into the weight room to get the power needed
3:31:11 > 3:31:16and the desire to get onto the rostrum. A new indoor national
3:31:16 > 3:31:24record for Thomas-Dodd. Anita Marton, deprived of gold two years
3:31:24 > 3:31:29ago by Michelle Carter in the very last putt of the competition, this
3:31:29 > 3:31:32was her response to that throw in the third round. A beautiful example
3:31:32 > 3:31:44of rotating shot put. That putt winged out as 19.48 metres, good
3:31:44 > 3:31:47parlance, drives upwards, hard, catches on the reverse, nicely
3:31:47 > 3:31:56timed. -- good balance. That gets you a putt over the 19-metre mark,
3:31:56 > 3:32:00Marton, a brilliant competitor, deprived two years ago, takes the
3:32:00 > 3:32:06lead with a world leader at the halfway stage. Here is a look back
3:32:06 > 3:32:13at what happened in the heptathlon high jump. The best clearance so
3:32:13 > 3:32:19far, Warners had a solid first day, a clearance at two point 02, in
3:32:19 > 3:32:27second place overall -- 2.02 metres. There is a PB there, adding two
3:32:27 > 3:32:32centimetres to his previous lifetime best. He is probably the man who is
3:32:32 > 3:32:39giving this man most to think about, went clear at the second time of
3:32:39 > 3:32:46asking. Many are putting up a solid performance, but he's going to need
3:32:46 > 3:32:55all of it to take the gold -- Kevin Mayer.
3:32:55 > 3:33:00Mayer. Kai Kazmirek, his third attempt at 2.05. Gave it a good old
3:33:00 > 3:33:09rattle. But a successful jump, all about points. 60-metre hurdles, pole
3:33:09 > 3:33:14vault and 1000 metres tomorrow. But the best jump was this man, Maicel
3:33:14 > 3:33:21Uibo of Estonia, 2.17, that's how to do it. Great history and events,
3:33:21 > 3:33:30Vergini all the most -- they had a famous Estonian multi-event and
3:33:30 > 3:33:35Maicel Uibo goes into the medals. The heptathlon summary after the
3:33:35 > 3:33:40four events of Day one and Kevin Mayer, as expected, the Frenchman,
3:33:40 > 3:33:47out in front by what is it, 45 points or so, I had of Damian Warner
3:33:47 > 3:33:52and Maicel Uibo has rocketed up the leaderboard into third place.Lining
3:33:52 > 3:33:56up for the third and last of the semifinals of the men's 400 metres
3:33:56 > 3:34:03and this is how they line up.
3:34:03 > 3:34:05and this is how they line up. The athletes on the outside of the
3:34:05 > 3:34:12favoured athletes. -- the athletes on the outside are the favoured
3:34:12 > 3:34:21athletes. Maslak going in lane four, admitted he ran a bad race in the
3:34:21 > 3:34:24first round but there are questions, he doesn't seem to have quite the
3:34:24 > 3:34:28same form he has had in the past, winning two Will two world indoor
3:34:28 > 3:34:36titles, he is superb indoors but he will have to go out more quickly
3:34:36 > 3:34:40here in this semifinal. He will know that a lot of his potential rivals
3:34:40 > 3:34:48to take his title away have gone.
3:34:48 > 3:34:50to take his title away have gone. So Maslak will have a great chance.
3:34:50 > 3:34:55He's still got to make it through here, because only two go through.
3:34:55 > 3:35:01Lendore, bronze at the last world indoors, had the quickest first lap
3:35:01 > 3:35:16this morning going through 221.62. Janezic, impressive, behind Fred
3:35:16 > 3:35:20Kerley last weekend. Maslak I'm sure we'll go off quickly. He left too
3:35:20 > 3:35:25much to do in the qualifying this morning, he scraped through. You
3:35:25 > 3:35:37Cywka ran from Kuwait goes in lane three -- Kyran.
3:35:37 > 3:35:41three -- Kyran. He won a world junior gold for the USA in 2012, now
3:35:41 > 3:35:47runs for Nigeria. Had to find some additional fastest losers this
3:35:47 > 3:35:51morning and Litvin of Kazakhstan was one of those. He finished very
3:35:51 > 3:35:57quickly, the 22-year-old.
3:35:58 > 3:36:00quickly, the 22-year-old. Can Maslak made it through to another final and
3:36:00 > 3:36:08take his chances there? I gain, far from guaranteed. Doesn't seem to be
3:36:08 > 3:36:11the imperious Maslak of recent years and only two going through
3:36:11 > 3:36:18automatically. To tomorrow's final.
3:36:23 > 3:36:30Lendore, the last of the semifinals in the men's 400 metres. Away they
3:36:30 > 3:36:35go and Maslak seems to be firing out of the blocks and already moving up
3:36:35 > 3:36:42alongside our the Slovenia. Lendore, so quick through the first 200
3:36:42 > 3:36:45metres this morning, will try to break in the lead but Maslak has
3:36:45 > 3:36:48come roaring out of the blocks and over the first 200 metres. He will
3:36:48 > 3:36:53look to control it and hang on. Lendore coming across, he wants the
3:36:53 > 3:36:58lead and these three a country mile clear of the rest. Its 342-macro
3:36:58 > 3:37:07places only in the final. Lendore, Maslak and Janezic, can he overhaul
3:37:07 > 3:37:10the defending champion? Maslak looking strong at the moment. Might
3:37:10 > 3:37:13Lendore be the one to suffer and struggled on the straight? Maslak
3:37:13 > 3:37:19comes through, Janezic can't quite get there, I think Lendore hung on
3:37:19 > 3:37:25but he really was just holding on as Janezic came charging through. I
3:37:25 > 3:37:30think he had just a bit too much to do. Maslak learned from the first
3:37:30 > 3:37:34round, he knew he had run badly tactically in the first round and he
3:37:34 > 3:37:38knew he had to get out more quickly. Lendore loves to go out strongly
3:37:38 > 3:37:43over the first 200, but this was a cracking finish.Yeah, just watch
3:37:43 > 3:37:48this, Lendore thinking he's there, Maslak, much better from him, gave
3:37:48 > 3:37:52up the lead at 200 metres, wasn't super fast and look at the tall
3:37:52 > 3:37:55Slovenian finishing so fast. Maslak's arm is out because he wants
3:37:55 > 3:38:00to get his chest ahead and there's no one with a bigger chest than
3:38:00 > 3:38:05Janezic. He can't quite get there, Lendore just hanging on by three or
3:38:05 > 3:38:13four hundreds, the result coming through. A good race.As you were
3:38:13 > 3:38:17mentioning, Steve, it's about Maslak looking for that when which he got,
3:38:17 > 3:38:22because you got a better lane in the final tomorrow. Maslak, and as
3:38:22 > 3:38:25mentioned, so many big names are out already so Maslak's chance of
3:38:25 > 3:38:29winning three world indoor titles, he's got a chance, he'll be in the
3:38:29 > 3:38:37final and that was a better run from him.Just as we saw at the climax of
3:38:37 > 3:38:41the men's long jump final the women's shot put will be decided by
3:38:41 > 3:38:45the top four performers so far in the first five efforts, taking their
3:38:45 > 3:38:58final three. Only four athletes. Yang Gao, of China, best in the
3:38:58 > 3:39:05second of 18 point 77, twice fifth that the World Championships. She is
3:39:05 > 3:39:10guaranteed force, can she improve it? -- she's guaranteed fourth
3:39:10 > 3:39:20place. It's not going to improve, it's about 18.5 metres. So Yang Gao,
3:39:20 > 3:39:30Lilia, strikes hard. -- she is linear will stop shy of 19 metres. A
3:39:30 > 3:39:38team-mate, Gong, has gone beyond that. So Yang Gao settles for fourth
3:39:38 > 3:39:49place and steps aside, clears the stage for her team-mate. So Gong Li
3:39:49 > 3:39:59Jau, 29-year-old champion last year in third place here. A big scream
3:39:59 > 3:40:03and it's a big effort as well. Possibly her best so far. I don't
3:40:03 > 3:40:12think it's enough. Because Danniel Thomas. , 19.2 to four silver and
3:40:12 > 3:40:16Anita Marton of Hungary, I don't think she's improved her position. A
3:40:16 > 3:40:23good competitive effort though. It is her best, 19.08, a season's best,
3:40:23 > 3:40:29but has to put up with a silver, sorry, bronze medal, and make way
3:40:29 > 3:40:33for the silver-medallist, Thomas-Dodd, who did take the lead
3:40:33 > 3:40:40at the halfway stage only to have it taken back by the Hungarian. Can
3:40:40 > 3:40:44Thomas-Dodd do to Marton what Michelle Carter did two years ago?
3:40:44 > 3:40:53She needs to throw in excess of 19.48. No. Bang on 19 metres. It
3:40:53 > 3:41:02wasn't meant to be. 19.2 to in round three, that's no improvement. A
3:41:02 > 3:41:05great example, just leaning backwards, leaning away from that,
3:41:05 > 3:41:11and lost some power. Of course, if she'd chased it out she wouldn't
3:41:11 > 3:41:14have saved it and she would have fouled over the front and it
3:41:14 > 3:41:17wouldn't be measured. A national record and the silver medal for
3:41:17 > 3:41:26Danniel Thomas. , which makes Anita Marton, I met her and she said she's
3:41:26 > 3:41:31been under the weather, had a cold for a few days. You would not know
3:41:31 > 3:41:38it. A massive effort, 19.48 metres, silver two years ago, guaranteed the
3:41:38 > 3:41:43goal. The shot put equivalent of a lap of honour, this. -- guaranteed
3:41:43 > 3:41:51the gold. Maybe she will extend her lead. Another big effort. A great
3:41:51 > 3:41:57demonstration of competent shop putting.
3:41:58 > 3:42:06putting. 19.48, her best so far. Has she improved it? She is celebrating.
3:42:06 > 3:42:12Its 19.62! A wonderful final effort from Marton. Hungary take their
3:42:12 > 3:42:16first-ever gold medal at the world indoor Championships and its Anita
3:42:16 > 3:42:24Marton with a world leading 19.62. Wonderful scenes in the celebrations
3:42:24 > 3:42:33from Marton. GABBY LOGAN:
3:42:33 > 3:42:37Well done to Anita Marton, in a few moments' time we'll see the medal
3:42:37 > 3:42:41ceremony for the men's long jump, which was a wonderful competition a
3:42:41 > 3:42:45little bit earlier this evening. They have to walk just behind our
3:42:45 > 3:42:50studio, the men, to get up to the stage, which is to side and Luvo
3:42:50 > 3:42:58Manyonga, when he went past, gave a lovely big wave, didn't he, guys? A
3:42:58 > 3:43:00big smile, big beaming smile. Obviously he was pushed into silver
3:43:00 > 3:43:04place by a wonderful effort from the young Cuban, but it really was an
3:43:04 > 3:43:05entertaining,
3:43:05 > 3:43:06young Cuban, but it really was an entertaining, a spectacle worthy of
3:43:06 > 3:43:11this stage.Absolutely and again we sort of looked at Luvo Manyonga and
3:43:11 > 3:43:14looks at Lawson at the start and said these are the two who will
3:43:14 > 3:43:17probably battle out, completely forget to link -- forgetting the
3:43:17 > 3:43:22young Cuban who gave the performance of his life. To PB like that at 19,
3:43:22 > 3:43:27what a wonderful way to do it and really exciting to watch. It was the
3:43:27 > 3:43:31perfect competition, wasn't it, the lead going backwards and forwards.
3:43:31 > 3:43:36But in the end that very young man, 19 years old, very little experience
3:43:36 > 3:43:40on the international stage, showed his composure and incredible
3:43:40 > 3:43:49character, Steve Backley.Yeah, it was a great competition.
3:43:52 > 3:43:57was a great competition.The IWS -- the IAAF world President...What a
3:43:57 > 3:44:06pleasure to hand out a medal to a wonderful young Cuban long jump,
3:44:06 > 3:44:07pleasure to hand out a medal to a wonderful young Cuban long jump,,
3:44:07 > 3:44:11first Dendy who really celebrated the bronze medal ahead of his
3:44:11 > 3:44:16team-mate, Lawson. 8.42, you wouldn't have believed that was only
3:44:16 > 3:44:26enough for a bronze medal. Very, very high-class. -- very, very
3:44:26 > 3:44:31high-class competition. This man, gold outdoors in London last summer
3:44:31 > 3:44:38but here in Birmingham, he jumped further, 8.44 metres, but only
3:44:38 > 3:44:50enough for silver. But he knows he performed.
3:44:50 > 3:44:53performed.Gold-medallist and IAAF world indoor champion representing
3:44:53 > 3:45:03Cuba, Juan Miguel Echevarria will stopwell, from one Cuban legend to
3:45:03 > 3:45:08another, well, one for the future may be, he is world indoor champion
3:45:08 > 3:45:17at 19. It wasn't only a massive jump, it was the way he did it in
3:45:17 > 3:45:22responding to a true champion in Manyonga. And we will hear a lot --
3:45:22 > 3:45:27a name we will hear a lot of and the Cuban national anthem.
3:45:32 > 3:45:42CUBAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS
3:46:33 > 3:46:41APPLAUSE CHEERING
3:46:41 > 3:46:49Remember that name,
3:46:49 > 3:46:50CHEERING Remember that name, Echevarria.
3:46:50 > 3:46:52Brilliant performers and that's going to be a tough one to beat in
3:46:52 > 3:46:56terms of the performers of the championships early stages to be
3:46:56 > 3:46:59calling that. That's going to take some beating. A world lead.
3:46:59 > 3:47:10Brilliant performers for the young man and a gold for Cuba.
3:47:13 > 3:47:17STUDIO: It certainly was. It's one of the competition so far in
3:47:17 > 3:47:23delivering a fantastic finale, performances you'd expect of this
3:47:23 > 3:47:27standard of competition. The crowd was treated to something special
3:47:27 > 3:47:30tonightyeah, they absolutely wear. I said it earlier, what nominal
3:47:30 > 3:47:37jumping. Befitting for this world stage. I don't know about you, Greg,
3:47:37 > 3:47:41but South Africa at the moment have a really healthy crop of South
3:47:41 > 3:47:45African jumpers at the moment. It's interesting how they've emerged as a
3:47:45 > 3:47:51jumping force.Yes, we had Godfrey Khotso Mokoena. He's a bit older
3:47:51 > 3:47:52than me
3:47:52 > 3:47:58Khotso Mokoena. He's a bit older than me. He wants in 2008 and seem
3:47:58 > 3:48:04to be the start of this resurgence in South Africa. In Cuba, we've had
3:48:04 > 3:48:09a few 8.2, 8.3, especially in Havana. But then they never really
3:48:09 > 3:48:13produced another as they have previously. Now we have a new kid on
3:48:13 > 3:48:16the block. You'll really be mixing it up with those South Africans. It
3:48:16 > 3:48:20makes it really exciting. What do you make of his potential? Is he a
3:48:20 > 3:48:27guy who can get over into 8.5 and upwards?Absolutely. Watching him
3:48:27 > 3:48:30out there today, 100%. What you jump in doors, if you get a nice wind,
3:48:30 > 3:48:36and nice bit of sun like to get in Havana, he could maybe produce a lot
3:48:36 > 3:48:44more than 8.5, maybe 8.6. He reminds me of Pedrosa, just a bit taller.
3:48:44 > 3:48:51That really works in his favour. His vast, powerful, has range on the
3:48:51 > 3:48:55runway and has a competitive edge. That's the whole package. We see a
3:48:55 > 3:49:00lot of talented jumpers over the years but they've never had the
3:49:00 > 3:49:04edge. To do what he did tonight, that shows a top competitor coming
3:49:04 > 3:49:08through.You have to have that competitive edge now at long
3:49:08 > 3:49:13jumping. It's extremely competitive. Yes, it's starting to change.
3:49:13 > 3:49:20Thankfully I had my period of winning with 8.3 and 8.4 as I did in
3:49:20 > 3:49:26that time. What you find is when these are -- whether slight lulls
3:49:26 > 3:49:29and at one period it was just me going into the majors and thinking I
3:49:29 > 3:49:32had a great chance of winning it, and others seem to never be pushing
3:49:32 > 3:49:36it, now we have a load of guys pushing the event. What will happen
3:49:36 > 3:49:40it will have a lot more guys are jumping significantly further
3:49:40 > 3:49:44because there are so many.We have more and more events night and it is
3:49:44 > 3:49:48the fast women, the 60-metre final. But it earlier this evening we had
3:49:48 > 3:49:52three semifinals but there was one in particular, the first one, which
3:49:52 > 3:49:55was loaded with talent. Unfortunately for Asha Philip, it
3:49:55 > 3:50:03was the one she was drawn in but it didn't fail to deliver.
3:50:03 > 3:50:04was the one she was drawn in but it didn't fail to deliver. No, look at
3:50:04 > 3:50:10the gap. On a world-class field, that is semifinal. She got a
3:50:10 > 3:50:15cracking start, great athletes, great power. Dafne Schippers on the
3:50:15 > 3:50:24right side. Further over in lane six, the field was loaded. Asha did
3:50:24 > 3:50:28well but this was always going to be tough for her. She was unfortunately
3:50:28 > 3:50:33drawn in the toughest heat of all. I can't take anything away from her. I
3:50:33 > 3:50:36think she ran pretty well and did the best she could and it was always
3:50:36 > 3:50:45going to be tough.Watching her run, she didn't tighten up, didn't worry.
3:50:45 > 3:50:56This was heat to.The Ivory Coast, Ta Lou. They want to macro heats.
3:50:56 > 3:51:02Ivory Coast is looking really good. This is going to be an amazing final
3:51:02 > 3:51:06and I can't wait to see at. Thereabouts to enter the arena to
3:51:06 > 3:51:13the usual fanfare -- thereabouts to enter the arena. Only two women have
3:51:13 > 3:51:16dipped under seven seconds today, Elaine Thompson and morale of
3:51:16 > 3:51:22hooray. We shouldn't necessarily be expecting super-quick time is --
3:51:22 > 3:51:29Mariella Hori.Because they don't have the daylight that Greg was
3:51:29 > 3:51:36talking about, the fatigue starts to set in. They are on hyper girl mode
3:51:36 > 3:51:40and you get a faster time. It could go the other way and we could see a
3:51:40 > 3:51:43very fast time. These athletes also know they're going to have to run
3:51:43 > 3:51:50fast in order to get on the. They're not thinking about three lanes or
3:51:50 > 3:51:56two lanes. They can put everything into the 60-metre race. Often these
3:51:56 > 3:52:01guys go out and compete in multiple events.Dangerous right here. I
3:52:01 > 3:52:06think because she didn't have a fast time coming into the championships,
3:52:06 > 3:52:14she was counted out a bit, but she has improved every round, so Elaine
3:52:14 > 3:52:17Thompson can be very dangerous.I hope she holds her form and gets in
3:52:17 > 3:52:22the mix. From what we've seen so far, I think this young lady year,
3:52:22 > 3:52:29who has delivered every time at this stage. In doors she's so well suited
3:52:29 > 3:52:34for it. She gets out really quick. She's one of those women who has run
3:52:34 > 3:52:38under seven seconds. She is very, very dangerous.OK, that's what
3:52:38 > 3:52:44these guys think. Steve Cram, it's a wide open race, isn't it? Hopefully
3:52:44 > 3:52:48it will be spitting spectacle to the end of our first full day here in
3:52:48 > 3:52:51Birmingham. COMMENTATOR: Yeah, just to pick up,
3:52:51 > 3:52:55I think you were referring to their best times ever. Nobody has run
3:52:55 > 3:53:01under seven seconds. Would be unusual. It's been a while. Shelly
3:53:01 > 3:53:04Ann Fraser Price a couple of championships ago run under seven.
3:53:04 > 3:53:10Only nine people have ever run under seven seconds but two of them are in
3:53:10 > 3:53:15the field, Ahoure and Thomson have done it in the past. How quickly?
3:53:15 > 3:53:19Ahoure in lane four, she has to turn silver into gold here. She's twice
3:53:19 > 3:53:24won silver medals at the world indoor Championships. Head team-mate
3:53:24 > 3:53:29Ta Lou, last year won a silver medal outdoors. Ivory Coast have never won
3:53:29 > 3:53:37gold at a major champs. Could this be the first time? Kambundji in the
3:53:37 > 3:53:42middle of them but don't forget Dafne Schippers, the world champion
3:53:42 > 3:53:49of the 200 metres.
3:53:49 > 3:53:52of the 200 metres. Murielle got the best start. It's going to be gold
3:53:52 > 3:54:02for Ahoure! 1-2 for the Ivory Coast. 6.97!
3:54:02 > 3:54:066.97! Murielle Ahoure has finally done it! Her country will be so
3:54:06 > 3:54:13proud, its gold and silver for Ivory Coast. Murielle Ahoure has run one
3:54:13 > 3:54:16of the quickest ever 60 metres. Superb performance, a brilliant
3:54:16 > 3:54:23start. The rest were chasing her home and look what that means to
3:54:23 > 3:54:32her. She's a brilliant 60-metre runner. Ta Lou is the silver winner
3:54:32 > 3:54:36and that will go with the two she won outdoors last year. She will be
3:54:36 > 3:54:41delighted with her team-mate. Your 60-metre running with a special
3:54:41 > 3:54:45skill. Lots of great people have never been able to combine that and
3:54:45 > 3:54:48outdoors. We've talked about some of them, the likes of Nelly Kuhlman.
3:54:48 > 3:54:54The beginnings of these world indoor Championships. What Ahoure has to be
3:54:54 > 3:54:58one of the best ever now and she can put herself right up there with all
3:54:58 > 3:55:03those other big names, particularly with that performance today, Colin.
3:55:03 > 3:55:12Yes, an outstanding performance by Ahoure. And the Swiss sneaking in
3:55:12 > 3:55:15with the bronze medal. Very nice to see, but there is our gold and
3:55:15 > 3:55:25silver-medallists. She lives up to seventh all-time with 6.9 seven. A
3:55:25 > 3:55:31world leader and what an indoor season that young lady has had! .
3:55:31 > 3:55:35We'll have another chance to have a look at it, Colin, but the signs
3:55:35 > 3:55:40were there in the semifinal that she's come here on the top of her
3:55:40 > 3:55:42game. I've always wondered whether she is ever quite had the belief
3:55:42 > 3:55:48sometimes, you know,. Obviously Elaine Thompson was in this but
3:55:48 > 3:55:51she's had some great people to race against. Last time she won silver,
3:55:51 > 3:55:57Shelly Ann Fraser priced ran 6.98 in the final so it isn't as if you have
3:55:57 > 3:56:00been beaten by good people. This was a chance she had to seize this time
3:56:00 > 3:56:07round. She's just found Kambundji, she got the bronze.Really exciting.
3:56:07 > 3:56:10Brilliant deceivers. They've worked hard all the way through the season,
3:56:10 > 3:56:14just edging their way through, haven't they? Taking victories when
3:56:14 > 3:56:19it matters, Kambundji sets a new national record of 7.0 three. When
3:56:19 > 3:56:23it came to it at the world indoors she produces another good strong
3:56:23 > 3:56:28performance. 7.05 for the Swiss. Great performance but there is our
3:56:28 > 3:56:33gold and silver-medallists.
3:56:40 > 3:56:44She's just unfortunately been in an era when there's been some great,
3:56:44 > 3:56:50great sprinters from Jamaica, the US. Dafne Schippers is in the 200
3:56:50 > 3:56:54metres, as well. This could be the turning point for Ahoure. Not many
3:56:54 > 3:57:02times you'll see that Elaine Thomson and Dafne Schippers get in there at
3:57:02 > 3:57:06all. She's a brilliant exponent of this. Full of confidence, great run
3:57:06 > 3:57:10in the semifinal. She just did exactly what she knew she was
3:57:10 > 3:57:13capable of. Accurate at the beginning, out of the blocks really
3:57:13 > 3:57:18hard, very fast, getting into the good caters she has. Your Mac or she
3:57:18 > 3:57:21doesn't go from side to side, straight as an arrow, keeping focus,
3:57:21 > 3:57:27all power going in the exact place it needs to be.Focused hard. Don't
3:57:27 > 3:57:32want to put any stress or strain, she knows that Elaine Thomas...
3:57:32 > 3:57:38Thomson, she knows she's living champion, she knows she can close
3:57:38 > 3:57:43down but it won't happen this time. Look at that wild, focused,
3:57:43 > 3:57:47determined. Work, work, work, all the way through to the line. Nothing
3:57:47 > 3:57:53Elaine Thompson could do on this occasion. Ahoure is out hard,
3:57:53 > 3:57:56aggressive, controlled, and takes a very good victory. 6.97, a world
3:57:56 > 3:58:04leading performance.Well, when you come and win your first ever gold
3:58:04 > 3:58:07medal at a World Championships for your country, never mind yourself
3:58:07 > 3:58:12individually, you do want to do it with this sort of performance. This
3:58:12 > 3:58:21is a top ten ever performance from Murielle Ahoure. Ta Lou with the
3:58:21 > 3:58:23silver and Kambundji with the bronze. Brilliant performance from
3:58:23 > 3:58:29those two. Enjoy this from Ahoure, it may signal something from her in
3:58:29 > 3:58:35the summer. She can do well over 100 metres, as well. 5000th of a second
3:58:35 > 3:58:43between Kambundji and Ta Lou woman who was rewarded herself with the
3:58:43 > 3:58:47silver medal. And the world leading 6.97 and the gold medal for Murielle
3:58:47 > 3:58:50Ahoure. First ever goal for the Ivory Coast.
3:58:50 > 3:58:52Ahoure. First ever goal for the Ivory Coast.
3:58:52 > 3:58:56STUDIO: You talk about being born in different eras and how perhaps your
3:58:56 > 3:59:00history would have changed were it not for being born a particular
3:59:00 > 3:59:06strength. Murielle Ahoure, had she not been born in the era of Jamaican
3:59:06 > 3:59:10dominance in spread she would have been world champion in 2013, 14.
3:59:10 > 3:59:14This is someone who is not -- this is not someone who has suddenly come
3:59:14 > 3:59:18to the fore at 30 will stop she's been knocking on the door, waiting
3:59:18 > 3:59:22for the moment and she brilliantly today. She really did, she is a
3:59:22 > 3:59:28fantastic talent. She was at the University of Miami in the US and
3:59:28 > 3:59:31she's been there in the finals trying to get amongst the medals.
3:59:31 > 3:59:36This was a fantastic performance by her. Start to finish, every round,
3:59:36 > 3:59:39she continues to improve, as herself and established herself as a
3:59:39 > 3:59:42favourite from the beginning and said, come and get me. She went to
3:59:42 > 3:59:47the finals and did the same thing, got out of the box, even away from
3:59:47 > 3:59:50her compatriot Ta Lou, who is a brilliant starter and said, you've
3:59:50 > 3:59:55got to come and get me and no one was able to do that.Lets go and
3:59:55 > 4:00:02hear from Ta Lou.Silver medal in an incredible, incredible race. How do
4:00:02 > 4:00:07you feel?I'm happy because when I came here I didn't expect to have a
4:00:07 > 4:00:17metal because it's not my best. I just came there to work for my stats
4:00:17 > 4:00:24and I'm happy to have a silver medal, so I'm just happy. I thank my
4:00:24 > 4:00:31coach. And so on, and so on.You had to come from behind there to secure
4:00:31 > 4:00:35that second. What were you thinking as you sort of came from behind so
4:00:35 > 4:00:44much?You know, my start is bad. I don't understand!Your start was not
4:00:44 > 4:00:48the greatest, you had to come from behind. What were you thinking? Did
4:00:48 > 4:00:54you believe you could do it?Yeah, for me, I was last. I have a big,
4:00:54 > 4:01:02big finish. I do what my coach tells me to do. Just run, run, run, do my
4:01:02 > 4:01:07best to be in the top three. I finished I was like, oh! I get it
4:01:07 > 4:01:12and I finished. It's OK for me. I didn't expect to do that. My best is
4:01:12 > 4:01:17outdoor
4:01:18 > 4:01:22outdoor seasonand Ivory Coast one, two. How special is that? It's good
4:01:22 > 4:01:27because, you know,
4:01:29 > 4:01:36because, you know, every day, it's really good. We got a gold medal, I
4:01:36 > 4:01:45was happy because she has two years. She had too many problems so for her
4:01:45 > 4:01:52it's really a big gift for her this year, so I hope it's really good for
4:01:52 > 4:01:56her.Bank is so talking to us. Please, come on. A phenomenal
4:01:56 > 4:02:01bronze. How do you feel? It's amazing. I'm just so happy I got the
4:02:01 > 4:02:05bronze.Coming into this, Denise Lewis said you were one of the
4:02:05 > 4:02:12athletes to watch. She seems to be right.Yes, it was a very good
4:02:12 > 4:02:15competition. I gave my best and I'm so happy because it was a very
4:02:15 > 4:02:21strong field. All the fastest women in the world were here. I'm happy.
4:02:21 > 4:02:25That was an incredible field of athletes. It was crazy. I was in the
4:02:25 > 4:02:30middle and got the bronze! I'm just happy. What will this do for you,
4:02:30 > 4:02:32moving forward? The confidence of knowing you can come to a
4:02:32 > 4:02:37competition of this size and get the medal?Yeah on its just a amazing. I
4:02:37 > 4:02:42never thought I be able to do that. It was always better and better. I'm
4:02:42 > 4:02:47just happy I achieved it. I'm looking forward to next season.
4:02:47 > 4:02:52Thank you.
4:02:52 > 4:02:59Sitting in the aisles clapping, was the rail Ahoure. How happy are you?
4:02:59 > 4:03:03An incredible performance.Thank you, it's been a rough couple of
4:03:03 > 4:03:08years, the last couple of years, I lost my father to cancer, he was
4:03:08 > 4:03:13battling cancer and we finally lost him almost a year ago now, so then
4:03:13 > 4:03:16the anniversary of his death is coming up on March the 24th. It's
4:03:16 > 4:03:21been a terrible time for me, so just, I'm at a loss for words right
4:03:21 > 4:03:25now. I just know that he was here with me today, and I've worked so
4:03:25 > 4:03:33hard to get back on top. The biggest thing was working on my mental,
4:03:33 > 4:03:36because mental execution wins races. Coming into this race I just knew
4:03:36 > 4:03:43that I had to be as sharp as an iron out there and just go out there and
4:03:43 > 4:03:47focus on my lane and execute. As you say, it's been a difficult year, but
4:03:47 > 4:03:50such a massive sacrifice that you have to make to get to this level.
4:03:50 > 4:03:54Can you give us an idea of what it takes?Oh my goodness, I have so
4:03:54 > 4:04:00many people to thank, my coach Alan Powell has been unbelievable, he is
4:04:00 > 4:04:05by rock, my mental Carmelita Jeter. My massage therapist, my whole team
4:04:05 > 4:04:11has been fantastic. To do this turnaround, we came into this season
4:04:11 > 4:04:14saying, OK, I've got two silvers at the World Championships and my goal
4:04:14 > 4:04:19was to be able to get a gold this time, so there are times where I
4:04:19 > 4:04:22thank God and I'm so blessed.Thank you very much for talking to us,
4:04:22 > 4:04:26thank you for winning such an incredible race.Thank you so much,
4:04:26 > 4:04:30thank you. GABBY LOGAN:
4:04:30 > 4:04:35What a great winner, grabbed what a great way to win the day -- great
4:04:35 > 4:04:39way to end the day. We seem great performances at the Diamond League
4:04:39 > 4:04:44and at the Olympic Games and World Championships and 30 years old,
4:04:44 > 4:04:48sometimes you have to wait for your moment, don't you?Sometimes you do,
4:04:48 > 4:04:51the team around her, all of the work, she came
4:04:51 > 4:04:51the team around her, all of the work, she came into this
4:04:51 > 4:04:55championship is absolutely ready and rocket start, she never gave it up.
4:04:55 > 4:05:01A great transition we just saw there, a translation out of Drive
4:05:01 > 4:05:04phrase into maximum velocity. Fantastic running here, very
4:05:04 > 4:05:10efficient. You look at all of the athletes, you see Kambundji, some of
4:05:10 > 4:05:14the athletes' arms out of their side, she's very efficient with
4:05:14 > 4:05:17every step and that's how you get to the finish line quick. It's not just
4:05:17 > 4:05:21about speed and power, its biomechanical efficiency. She's one
4:05:21 > 4:05:26of the best in the business at that. She's always been very efficient.
4:05:26 > 4:05:29She's a fantastic victory from a well-deserved because of all of the
4:05:29 > 4:05:33work she's done in putting this together. This doesn't just happen.
4:05:33 > 4:05:44The speed, power, efficiency, it doesn't just happen. It's not
4:05:44 > 4:05:46doesn't just happen. It's not born talent, you work on those things.
4:05:46 > 4:05:49Head on shot, not a lot of wasted motion. If you watch Kambundji, the
4:05:49 > 4:05:52bronze-medallist on the left of the screen, arms coming out, elbows
4:05:52 > 4:05:55coming out, not on what -- not a lot of symmetry, the right arm is doing
4:05:55 > 4:05:58something different to the left but the opposite with Ahoure, everything
4:05:58 > 4:06:03is symmetrical and efficient. It was a great race. You talk about
4:06:03 > 4:06:08Kambundji, for me it was a step up, stepping up on an occasion like this
4:06:08 > 4:06:16is a big deal. She's definitely put them on the map today.You
4:06:16 > 4:06:16is a big deal. She's definitely put them on the map today. You picked
4:06:16 > 4:06:20her out, Denise. We said is not necessarily about winning medals but
4:06:20 > 4:06:24yours has gone and got one for you. It was about picking out names and
4:06:24 > 4:06:26people who may have a great championship and somebody who may be
4:06:26 > 4:06:31a name to look out for in the future. Kambundji has done it for
4:06:31 > 4:06:37you, she has put herself out there. Dadic, Tony Minichiello, she got the
4:06:37 > 4:06:44silver in the pentathlon earlier and Michael, it's the turn of the men
4:06:44 > 4:06:48tomorrow, and the Chinese will be out there. Christian Coleman of the
4:06:48 > 4:06:52USA may have something to say about him making tops one.We were told we
4:06:52 > 4:06:57could not pick Christian Coleman. That's why Christian Coleman's name
4:06:57 > 4:07:03is not out there because he's one to watch.He's already a world
4:07:03 > 4:07:07silver-medallistI'm looking forward to that 60 tomorrow and the Chinese
4:07:07 > 4:07:12will be in the final and has an opportunity to do something special.
4:07:12 > 4:07:15It's Christian Coleman's race to win. He's got the target on his
4:07:15 > 4:07:18back. He seems to be an athlete who is well prepared to carry that
4:07:18 > 4:07:23burden who we will get to see tomorrow. We saw Kenny Harrison
4:07:23 > 4:07:26today make absolutely sure that she was through to the next round, a
4:07:26 > 4:07:29brilliant run in the hurdles, another world record holder in
4:07:29 > 4:07:37Coleman out tomorrow. It's exciting when people are here at the top
4:07:38 > 4:07:40when people are here at the top of their game and he'll want to take
4:07:40 > 4:07:43home top spot.I think Coleman can go out there and what we've seen
4:07:43 > 4:07:46going out with the guys running fast as he could put a seriously fast
4:07:46 > 4:07:48time down, another world record. It would be incredible for everybody
4:07:48 > 4:07:51here and everybody watching, if they get to see somebody winning a world
4:07:51 > 4:07:55record. Sometimes it's a once-in-a-lifetime.Lets hope the
4:07:55 > 4:07:58weather is kind to as tomorrow and people can get here to these
4:07:58 > 4:08:02championships. If you can't and you have a ticket, don't worry, plenty
4:08:02 > 4:08:05of people will be watching at home and we'll be
4:08:05 > 4:08:07of people will be watching at home and we'll be starting at 9:45am on
4:08:07 > 4:08:12BBC Two. In the evening, the session starts at 5:30pm. Of course we have
4:08:12 > 4:08:19the 400 metres finals to look forward to, two British women going,
4:08:19 > 4:08:22Zoey Clark and Eilidh Doyle, going in this 400 metre finals, which
4:08:22 > 4:08:23Zoey Clark and Eilidh Doyle, going in this 400 metre finals, which we
4:08:23 > 4:08:27are very excited about. There's been a few disqualifications, a few
4:08:27 > 4:08:31controversies along the way. Greg, we have to say goodbye to you from
4:08:31 > 4:08:36the studio.I've not been invited back... I'm waiting for the umbrella
4:08:36 > 4:08:40to pull me off in a moment. You can stay as long as you want but you
4:08:40 > 4:08:43have other things to get on with. We've loved having you here for a
4:08:43 > 4:08:48thrilling long jump competition. Thank you for having me, it was a
4:08:48 > 4:08:52great spectacle.Safe journey back home to the hotel, put your winter
4:08:52 > 4:09:00boots on. We'll be back tomorrow, 9:45am on BBC Two.
