0:00:08 > 0:00:12Colin Jackson has won his first gold medal. He is the champion of the

0:00:12 > 0:00:15world. Athletic supporters are looking or

0:00:15 > 0:00:24not just with admiration but in all. Shakes Drayton for Britain!

0:00:29 > 0:00:35He is the world champion!

0:00:39 > 0:00:43Welcome to our coverage of the final day of the world indoor athletics

0:00:43 > 0:00:48Championships here in Birmingham. It is a very sad day for the world of

0:00:48 > 0:00:52athletics and, indeed, British and world sport. Sir Roger Bannister,

0:00:52 > 0:00:56the first man to run a four-minute mile, has died at 88.

0:00:56 > 0:01:07Here is Patrick Geary. A windy, rainy day in Oxford. May

0:01:07 > 0:01:17six, 1954. The crowds were braving the

0:01:17 > 0:01:23conditions. They had heard a British medical student was set to challenge

0:01:23 > 0:01:29a seemingly unbreakable record, the four minute mile.

0:01:29 > 0:01:38So when the weather brightened up at the track, Bannister set off with

0:01:38 > 0:01:43two friends acting as pacemakers. When Chris chat away began to tire,

0:01:43 > 0:01:51it was over to Bannister.Makes joy and anguish. My mind took over. --

0:01:51 > 0:01:56makes to joy and anguish. I felt that the moment of a lifetime had

0:01:56 > 0:02:02come.The Everest of athletics was about to be conquered. Bannister

0:02:02 > 0:02:08broke the tape in three minutes 59.4 seconds.Am absolutely overwhelmed.

0:02:08 > 0:02:13It is a great surprise to me to be able to do it today, I think Ibis

0:02:13 > 0:02:17very lucky. He would never topped what happens on the track that day,

0:02:17 > 0:02:22but he became a major figure in British sport. He shared the sports

0:02:22 > 0:02:26Council and introduced the first test for anabolic steroids. By the

0:02:26 > 0:02:31time he appeared at the 2012 Sports Personality Of The Year awards, he

0:02:31 > 0:02:34knew he was suffering from Parkinson's, a disease he spent most

0:02:34 > 0:02:43of his life treating as a neurologist. He was knighted for

0:02:43 > 0:02:46services to medicine and sport. Bannister regarded his medical

0:02:46 > 0:02:48career as the greater achievements but had strong memories of his day

0:02:48 > 0:02:52in history.I collapsed as I crossed the tape but recovered sufficiently

0:02:52 > 0:02:59to hear him announcing in a time which, subject to ratification, will

0:02:59 > 0:03:05be a new world record, three... And after that the noise of the crowds

0:03:05 > 0:03:11are obliterated the remainder of his announcement.

0:03:14 > 0:03:19Lord Sebastian: Steve Cram have joined me to talk more about the

0:03:19 > 0:03:26significance of that moment. -- Lord Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram. And

0:03:26 > 0:03:30also put into context how that day perhaps transcends athletics and

0:03:30 > 0:03:35sport. It was in an age of pioneering. If you could put into

0:03:35 > 0:03:39context for us exactly where he came from in his athletics career and

0:03:39 > 0:03:44what it was like for him?He was part of that Corinthian age where,

0:03:44 > 0:03:48as you have heard in that film, for him, athletics might not have been

0:03:48 > 0:03:54the be all and end all but, as you said rightly, there was a pioneering

0:03:54 > 0:04:03spirit in the 50s.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05spirit in the 50s. Roger was a great athlete, he would tease said and I

0:04:05 > 0:04:08about had he been around in our day with better tracks, shoes and

0:04:08 > 0:04:12training methods. He was a great athlete. It was destined to happen.

0:04:12 > 0:04:16We heard John Landy was going to try to break the four-minute mile.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21Everything came together on that day. It was filmed. For the first

0:04:21 > 0:04:25time the news of what happened very quickly got out to not only the

0:04:25 > 0:04:29British public but around the world. It was one of the first sporting

0:04:29 > 0:04:33events for that to happen. The resonance of his achievement was

0:04:33 > 0:04:37much greater than it might have been if he had done its two or three

0:04:37 > 0:04:43years earlier. He was always very self-effacing about it but, for me,

0:04:43 > 0:04:49and I am sure for Seb, the first book my coach gave me was The Four

0:04:49 > 0:04:57Minute Mile. The first film he made me watch was those grainy pictures.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00Scientist says people would die if they ran a four-minute mile. Records

0:05:00 > 0:05:05are there to be broken, but that particular barrier was seen as

0:05:05 > 0:05:10something that was medically almost impossible? It was. You are right,

0:05:10 > 0:05:13people were writing learned treaties and medical magazine saying if you

0:05:13 > 0:05:20try to do that, it is life-threatening. He was one of the

0:05:20 > 0:05:26cleverest people I think I have ever met. He was, in equal measure,

0:05:26 > 0:05:33modest as well. He never really got what he did. It was not a front. He

0:05:33 > 0:05:39just said, he used the line there, I am quite lucky. I don't think the

0:05:39 > 0:05:47enormity of what he did came to life for me until I actually had the

0:05:47 > 0:05:50great privilege, and we both knew him well, sitting in his sitting

0:05:50 > 0:05:55room and we were comparing training diaries. And I think it is fair to

0:05:55 > 0:06:01say we were probably doing in a day and a half, two days, but these guys

0:06:01 > 0:06:04were to begin a week and a half, maybe two weeks. Then you look at

0:06:04 > 0:06:11the times he achieved off the back of what was really quite thin

0:06:11 > 0:06:14training, he and his colleagues were beginning to use the science of the

0:06:14 > 0:06:18sport and exploring it and he had a medical background, but when you

0:06:18 > 0:06:25look at the time... And people dismissed the four minute barrier.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28More people have individually climbed Everest than run a four

0:06:28 > 0:06:33minute mile. It is an extraordinary achievement. Interestingly, in your

0:06:33 > 0:06:39lovely little montage, somebody, I think the voice-over, said he did

0:06:39 > 0:06:45not achieve again on the track. Actually, in pure racing terms,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48winning the Commonwealth title months later in Vancouver when he

0:06:48 > 0:06:54again Peter John Landy, was one of the greater mile races of all time

0:06:54 > 0:06:58-- when he again Peter John Landy. He turned down the chance to go to

0:06:58 > 0:07:02the Olympics in 1948 because he was studying, that tells you a lot about

0:07:02 > 0:07:10what athletics was like.He became a volunteer in 48.So at the sport was

0:07:10 > 0:07:16important to him, no doubt, but not the same sport we have now, clearly.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20He was at university to study to become a doctor, he always said, not

0:07:20 > 0:07:24to become an athlete. Pursuing an athletics career while he was there,

0:07:24 > 0:07:28it could have been rowing or something else, it was always going

0:07:28 > 0:07:35to come to an end at a point when he wanted to get on with his career. He

0:07:35 > 0:07:42left this massive, massive legacy. What did it do for you?For all

0:07:42 > 0:07:46young milers, I was born in 1960, it happened a few years before I was

0:07:46 > 0:07:52born, he was a bit older than me, the first person that you are taught

0:07:52 > 0:07:59to look up to was Roger Bannister. Then after that you are looking at

0:07:59 > 0:08:05times, all athletes do. When I was 15, 16, I was already thinking I

0:08:05 > 0:08:10wonder if I could run a four minute mile one day. That is still true and

0:08:10 > 0:08:18that is where all athletes around the world, one of the athletes at

0:08:18 > 0:08:20the beginning of these World Championships who was shown in the

0:08:20 > 0:08:25titles, he came to the 50th anniversary Championships, we had

0:08:25 > 0:08:30Peter Snell, John Landy, Jim Wright, all the greats. But that athlete was

0:08:30 > 0:08:35bowing down to Sir Roger Bannister in a way which I found really

0:08:35 > 0:08:40touching. If a guy from Morocco in the midnight is understood what

0:08:40 > 0:08:44Roger Bannister meant to other sports, to me that was really

0:08:44 > 0:08:48heart-warming. And it still does too many youngsters around the world.

0:08:48 > 0:08:54There is no athlete of our vintage, particularly in middle distance

0:08:54 > 0:08:58running, that did not look at him as the senior partner. The mile high

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Dane Piedt history before Roger did what he did, we had Walter George,

0:09:02 > 0:09:09Sidney Goodison in the 30s, but that race to the four minute secured the

0:09:09 > 0:09:14mile as a British athletics institution and we have a massive

0:09:14 > 0:09:20debt of gratitude.And a rich heritage.It is a rich heritage.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24Steve is right. When I joined my athletics club and dads to say I

0:09:24 > 0:09:31wanted to run the mile, people referred to him.We should put into

0:09:31 > 0:09:35context the work of his pacemakers and how it was at team effort. They

0:09:35 > 0:09:40were great friends for the whole life. Chris and Chris, he always

0:09:40 > 0:09:45said I just took the credit for a great piece of teamwork. They always

0:09:45 > 0:09:50said they could not have taken that are run and run the 3.50 nine. I

0:09:50 > 0:09:54love that they became such good friends and they were intrinsically

0:09:54 > 0:09:59linked.It feels to me like conquering Everest going to the

0:09:59 > 0:10:05South Pole, it is one of those iconic things that man does.In

0:10:05 > 0:10:10large proper preparation was spent in Scotland, walking and climbing

0:10:10 > 0:10:14are just becoming great, great friends. -- in large part of their

0:10:14 > 0:10:19preparation. When we sadly lost Chris chat away, it deeply affected

0:10:19 > 0:10:25Roger. They were close friends. He said he did not hear anything beyond

0:10:25 > 0:10:33three when the time was announced. He talks about that moment, and Seb

0:10:33 > 0:10:38will say this. I have met, he has met, and I am sure thousands of

0:10:38 > 0:10:42people around the country will say I was there or knew somebody who was

0:10:42 > 0:10:49there, that would probably add up to 100 or 150,000.I think there were

0:10:49 > 0:10:53around 15,000 people die. So many people have a story. Roger is the

0:10:53 > 0:10:59one in the middle of it all. I met so many people over the years that

0:10:59 > 0:11:03say the announcement was drowned out by the cheering of the crowd. I

0:11:03 > 0:11:07think it was voted one of the most iconic moments of the 20th century,

0:11:07 > 0:11:13rightly so.It has been an inspiration to athletics in sport,

0:11:13 > 0:11:16the people have talked about the four-minute mile in the context of

0:11:16 > 0:11:19science or the arts, if you if you think you can or you think you

0:11:19 > 0:11:23aren't, you are probably right. It is one of our biggest national

0:11:23 > 0:11:31moments. It is such a great sadness, a national sadness. We have lost a

0:11:31 > 0:11:35friend on the sport has lost a senior partner.He will continue --

0:11:35 > 0:11:38it will continue to be an inspirational moment for people

0:11:38 > 0:11:42beyond the sport. Looking at the list of times you guys run the mile

0:11:42 > 0:11:48and held world records in, those small increments, it is still in the

0:11:48 > 0:11:5340s, within 40 seconds. He took his own time down over the couple of

0:11:53 > 0:11:57years beforehand and what must have gone on in his mind.He was a great

0:11:57 > 0:12:01student even in the later years. I was always amazed about how Internet

0:12:01 > 0:12:07she still was with who was doing what, particularly in the mile. He

0:12:07 > 0:12:14was a scientist at heart, I guess. Was it middle distance running in

0:12:14 > 0:12:17particular?I invited him to sit next to me at the 1500 metre final

0:12:17 > 0:12:26in London. He was reading the race in exactly the way you were. He was

0:12:26 > 0:12:31in touch, he had very feisty views. He was a very challenging person,

0:12:31 > 0:12:37but in a very good way. He wanted to know about training methods,

0:12:37 > 0:12:40altitude, why were people running quicker and why are they not running

0:12:40 > 0:12:44even quicker.A cup of tea with Roger was a trip to the osteopath,

0:12:44 > 0:12:49you were really challenge. You are lucky I am privileged to have spent

0:12:49 > 0:12:53the time with someone who has meant so much to this country and the

0:12:53 > 0:12:58world of sport. -- you are lucky and privileged.

0:12:58 > 0:12:59Thank you for sharing.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01privileged. Thank you for sharing. We have a

0:13:01 > 0:13:05packed agenda, as always, on this final day of the World Indoor

0:13:05 > 0:13:10Championships. The men's pole vault is coming into the arena, the

0:13:10 > 0:13:14competition starts shortly. The hurdles semifinals on the track

0:13:14 > 0:13:19first up, featuring Andy policy of Great Britain and Aries Merritt. The

0:13:19 > 0:13:23women's long jump, I think we'll be one of the events of these

0:13:23 > 0:13:31championships. Ivana Spanovic, we saw her in the indoors in Belgrade,

0:13:31 > 0:13:34just supreme. How will Brittney Reese respond? The 3,000-metre men's

0:13:34 > 0:13:41final is at 3:35pm. Shelayna Oskan-Clarke is going in a wide-open

0:13:41 > 0:13:49eight injured metre final. -- 800-metre final.

0:13:49 > 0:13:55In between,

0:13:56 > 0:13:58In between, hopefully Andy Pozzi will have made it safely through to

0:13:58 > 0:14:04the men's hurdles. We will also be showing highlights of the London

0:14:04 > 0:14:08Half. Mo Farah was first across the line, we will see how that happened.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12Let's go to the commentary box with my lovely colleague Colin Jackson.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17Good afternoon.Good afternoon. We're looking forward to

0:14:17 > 0:14:18Good afternoon.Good afternoon. We're looking forward to seeing the

0:14:18 > 0:14:23men's hurdles Andy Pozzi featuring in the same heat as a Aries Merritt,

0:14:23 > 0:14:30who you feel is perhaps the main challenger? It is interesting.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34Jeopardy is involved courtesy of the five barriers they had to take. And

0:14:34 > 0:14:39he was very good yesterday. He got out of the blocks really sharply.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43And think about a Aries Merritt as a main rival. Out the blocks very

0:14:43 > 0:14:50quickly. Remember, he is just getting over his kidney transplant.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53I am seeing a really good, competitive opportunity for areas to

0:14:53 > 0:14:58get back on the global stage as a winner. He has the capability, for

0:14:58 > 0:15:05sure. -- a really good, competitive opportunity for Aries

0:15:05 > 0:15:07sure. -- a really good, competitive opportunity for Aries.But Andy has

0:15:07 > 0:15:11looked very relaxed, really enjoying these championships? Agazzi feels he

0:15:11 > 0:15:16is in great shape, which is most important. He worked really hardout

0:15:16 > 0:15:20of the blocks to get himself set up, worked hard from every single

0:15:20 > 0:15:24barrier. But sometimes causes you to get a bit close. That is what

0:15:24 > 0:15:30happened here. He literally had to jump a bit higher than he would

0:15:30 > 0:15:35necessarily like, but that will be fixed by doing skill work in the

0:15:35 > 0:15:43warm up. I think he should have a flawless entrance into that final.

0:15:44 > 0:15:49Let's hope so, and joining me in the studio is Denise Lewis and Michael

0:15:49 > 0:15:54Johnson. If I can take you away from the hurdles for a second, and a word

0:15:54 > 0:15:59about Sir Roger Bannister. As a former world record-holder yourself,

0:15:59 > 0:16:03you have been in that elite group but the four minute mile in the

0:16:03 > 0:16:07context of almost sporting history and in terms of what mankind can

0:16:07 > 0:16:13achieve, it was such a pioneering moment, wasn't it?It really was and

0:16:13 > 0:16:20it goes beyond what he accomplished with the 4-minute mile goes beyond

0:16:20 > 0:16:25athletics. This was man on the moon level stuff, it was amazing. Every

0:16:25 > 0:16:29athlete owes a debt of gratitude to Sir Roger Bannister for what he

0:16:29 > 0:16:33meant to the sport and bringing the sport outside of athletics and into

0:16:33 > 0:16:39the world consciousness. And what human performance is all about and

0:16:39 > 0:16:45pushing boundaries. From that point, you started to have Bob Beamon and

0:16:45 > 0:16:49those sort of moment and Roger Bannister is right at the top.And

0:16:49 > 0:16:54at the vanguard of that in so many ways. Steve Cram made a great point

0:16:54 > 0:16:58and said two years before we wouldn't have seen it because we

0:16:58 > 0:17:02wouldn't have had that footage. The confluence of events that happened

0:17:02 > 0:17:07that day, the weather, the pacemakers, everything came together

0:17:07 > 0:17:12and now in our age of being able to see anything, whatever, it's almost

0:17:12 > 0:17:19impossible to imagine what that was like.Completely, but you said it,

0:17:19 > 0:17:23pioneering, ground-breaking, and as a developing athlete he was one of

0:17:23 > 0:17:30the leaders for us coming in as a 14-year-old really understanding

0:17:30 > 0:17:36what he has done for British sport and international sport. I never had

0:17:36 > 0:17:40the honour of meeting him directly but he was in that consciousness. He

0:17:40 > 0:17:46represented endeavour and grit and determination. That is what you hold

0:17:46 > 0:17:51dear as a British athlete.I have read about it so many times over the

0:17:51 > 0:17:56years, the idea that suddenly he got wind of the Australian Lundy was

0:17:56 > 0:18:05about to do it. It is such a magical moment in history, isn't it?

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Absolutely and that is that competitiveness, you want to be the

0:18:08 > 0:18:13first. It really did set up for subsequent athletes the idea of

0:18:13 > 0:18:16doing something special and continuing to push boundaries of

0:18:16 > 0:18:20human achievement. Like I mentioned Bob Beamon, that was special for me

0:18:20 > 0:18:29as well. Nobody had ever done the 200m and 400m at that level before

0:18:29 > 0:18:34and that was special for me, pushing the boundaries. It was inspired over

0:18:34 > 0:18:39the decades by Sir Roger Bannister and the 4-minute mile.Let's get out

0:18:39 > 0:18:44onto the track because it is the 60m men's hurdles semifinals time and

0:18:44 > 0:18:49Andrew Cotter is in the commentary box.

0:18:49 > 0:18:55COMMENTATOR: Stephen King going in the first of these semifinals. A

0:18:55 > 0:18:55very

0:18:55 > 0:18:57the first of these semifinals. A very tough line-up for him to try to

0:18:57 > 0:19:04overcome.

0:19:04 > 0:19:10overcome. Eaton is one of the favourites.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16favourites. Hough has just won the Australian title for the fourth

0:19:16 > 0:19:21time.

0:19:22 > 0:19:33time. Manga of France, the French champion. There is Eaton, ran 7.43

0:19:33 > 0:19:45to win the US title. Baji, the bronze-medallist in London. Look out

0:19:45 > 0:19:55for this guy, 30 now but making his mark on the world stage.

0:19:56 > 0:20:02mark on the world stage. David King gets his welcome. 7.63 in France

0:20:02 > 0:20:06last month, needs to find a time close to that or perhaps even

0:20:06 > 0:20:16quicker, and Smet of the Netherlands on the outside. Al-Malod drifted

0:20:16 > 0:20:24into the lane on his left in qualifying. He was clear in the

0:20:24 > 0:20:32first round because the man on his left was way behind but there could

0:20:32 > 0:20:37be a little bit of sharing of airspace in this heat so look out

0:20:37 > 0:20:43for that.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48for that. Two to go through automatically over the three heats,

0:20:48 > 0:20:53two fastest losers.

0:21:00 > 0:21:09At the moment Eaton going strongly. Well, just about on the line, Manga

0:21:09 > 0:21:17takes it from Eaton. Great run from the French champion.

0:21:17 > 0:21:25the French champion. We were all looking to Eaton. Manga came through

0:21:25 > 0:21:31very well indeed to take the victory. A good run from Manga,

0:21:31 > 0:21:39David King further down the field, but Manga and Eaton are the two who

0:21:39 > 0:21:43will go through.Yes, if they didn't make any mistakes it was going to be

0:21:43 > 0:21:51nearly clear for them. They were the quality of this field.

0:21:51 > 0:21:56quality of this field. Eaton started making mistakes, and Manga came

0:21:56 > 0:22:02through meaning he will get a better laying in the final. We want to look

0:22:02 > 0:22:09at David King as well. Look how close they are coming. And if you

0:22:09 > 0:22:14clash, arms will be tying up between each other and that's the reason

0:22:14 > 0:22:17that I say when you share the airspace it is a problem for

0:22:17 > 0:22:21athletes because you feel like you are physically assaulted. It might

0:22:21 > 0:22:35sound dramatic but it is the way you field -- the way you feel. The

0:22:35 > 0:22:42French have Lagarde so the challenge might be strong in the final. Manga

0:22:42 > 0:22:50and Eaton going through is the automatic qualifiers.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54and Eaton going through is the automatic qualifiers.

0:22:54 > 0:22:58David, sixth place, are you happy with your performance? Not really, I

0:22:58 > 0:23:03sat on the second or third hurdle. It is disappointing because I wanted

0:23:03 > 0:23:08to come out in the semis and run better than in the heat. Sometimes

0:23:08 > 0:23:13it doesn't come together but it is motivation to keep fighting. As you

0:23:13 > 0:23:16say, next time it could be the Commonwealth Games, what have you

0:23:16 > 0:23:21learned from this process is that you can take forward? It has all

0:23:21 > 0:23:25been a really amazing experience. For me running on two different days

0:23:25 > 0:23:29I've never really done before in heats and semis so I've learned to

0:23:29 > 0:23:40handle that a little bit or at least what to work on. Any international

0:23:40 > 0:23:43experience is really good so it will do me some good. Thanks for speaking

0:23:43 > 0:23:48to us. Andy Pozzi going in the next of the

0:23:48 > 0:23:54semifinals and it's so important, there will be a final in two hours

0:23:54 > 0:23:58and 20 minutes and he cannot leave anything behind because you have to

0:23:58 > 0:24:03get in the top two.Yes, you have to treat this as a final. Knowing

0:24:03 > 0:24:07what's to come, he will have trained for this understanding that you have

0:24:07 > 0:24:12a quick recovery, you have to come back and warm up again so he will

0:24:12 > 0:24:17absolutely attack this as a final knowing he cannot leave anything on

0:24:17 > 0:24:21the table. He has been here before, he knows what he has got to do apart

0:24:21 > 0:24:27from studying his mind and not overthinking it. He is competitive,

0:24:27 > 0:24:34his good. He just has to do his thing. He's in great shape, the

0:24:34 > 0:24:38joint captain of the British team and his fellow captain of course is

0:24:38 > 0:24:42also in action today. It could be a good day for the captains, Steve

0:24:42 > 0:24:47Cram. COMMENTATOR: Absolutely, and I know

0:24:47 > 0:24:47everyone

0:24:47 > 0:24:49COMMENTATOR: Absolutely, and I know everyone talks about leading by

0:24:49 > 0:24:52example but captains do have that little bit of extra responsibility

0:24:52 > 0:25:00to perform well. Andy is just going to make sure here that he gets into

0:25:00 > 0:25:05the final later with a solid performance. I think as long as he

0:25:05 > 0:25:12runs something like he ran in the qualification he will be fine here.

0:25:12 > 0:25:16Merritt, the Olympic champion in 2012, world indoor champion and

0:25:16 > 0:25:21record holder in that year as well, Merritt is showing signs of getting

0:25:21 > 0:25:27back to his very best totally in terms of times this year. Didn't

0:25:27 > 0:25:31look quite so sharp in qualification but he's a great competitor,

0:25:31 > 0:25:40Merritt. So he goes in lane six, Pozzi is in four. Only the first two

0:25:40 > 0:25:53guaranteed, the fastest loser time, to keep an eye on that.

0:26:06 > 0:26:15Here is Constantino, the 23-year-old. A season's best of

0:26:15 > 0:26:247.60. If he is anywhere near that he might have a chance of fastest loser

0:26:24 > 0:26:29spot. Another one who improved his personal best in qualification,

0:26:29 > 0:26:3522-year-old from Cuba, Iribane.

0:26:35 > 0:26:3922-year-old from Cuba, Iribane. This is his moment, the European indoor

0:26:39 > 0:26:46champion on two occasions has been out of the

0:26:46 > 0:26:56out of the medals. Very experienced Greek athlete next to him.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Greek athlete next to him. Alongside him, Merritt, as I was just

0:26:59 > 0:27:08mentioning.

0:27:11 > 0:27:18One or two false starts, of course most pointedly CJ Ujah and it is not

0:27:18 > 0:27:21commentator's curse here, I just want to get that out of the way so

0:27:21 > 0:27:33there's going to be no false start here. Just nice, solid, clean

0:27:34 > 0:27:39performance from Pozzi. He and Merritt are the two expected to go

0:27:39 > 0:27:50through here, and keep an eye on Iribane in lane three.

0:27:52 > 0:28:03Merritt just taking a little longer to settle in.

0:28:11 > 0:28:21A good start next to Pozzi. That is a storming run! 7.45, just outside

0:28:21 > 0:28:31his personal best. Well, I said he only needed to be as good as he was

0:28:31 > 0:28:34in qualification, he was better. Not sure his start was quite as good but

0:28:34 > 0:28:42once he got into his running, the start from the guy next to him, the

0:28:42 > 0:28:48big tall Cuban Iribane, he did get the second place ahead of Merritt

0:28:48 > 0:28:53but what about Andy Pozzi here, Colin Jackson, very good indeed.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57Yes, he was under pressure in his mind to make sure he qualified well.

0:28:57 > 0:29:02He has been desperate to get a fast run, and to prove to everybody what

0:29:02 > 0:29:06great shape he is in. He popped out of the blocks, he didn't really

0:29:06 > 0:29:11drive out but he prepared himself well. He came off the first hurdle

0:29:11 > 0:29:18nice and strong and dynamic and kept a cool head. He didn't press, he

0:29:18 > 0:29:26just knew -- just did what he knew he was capable of doing. He also ran

0:29:26 > 0:29:33himself a season's best and get under the 7.50 mark. Just a nice,

0:29:33 > 0:29:36controlled race. He knew he was pulling himself away and if you look

0:29:36 > 0:29:43at his face he is very relaxed, very chilled. Have a look head-on, at the

0:29:43 > 0:29:47right of our screen. Works hard into the first hurdle but knows that he

0:29:47 > 0:29:54needs to clear it well with no mistakes whatsoever. In a nice

0:29:54 > 0:29:58straight line so he can work straight off it. Look at his face

0:29:58 > 0:30:04after he comes off this barrier, very easy.He knew it, he knew he

0:30:04 > 0:30:10had run well and very quick. That has put him in prime pole position.

0:30:10 > 0:30:15We have one more semi to come. Eaton has run a tad quicker this year but

0:30:15 > 0:30:20didn't look anywhere near as good in the previous semi. No, Andy is

0:30:20 > 0:30:24looking very good. Of course the final is to come and the person I

0:30:24 > 0:30:30would say it would be his real danger comes up next.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39STUDIO: A very impressive run from Andy Pozzi. He seemed to pull the

0:30:39 > 0:30:44way between hurdles two and three and increase incrementally between

0:30:44 > 0:30:51each hurdle. Did not have a bad start. Not at all. Looking at him

0:30:51 > 0:30:54versus the other athletes other than Aries Merritt, he was there, Merritt

0:30:54 > 0:30:54versus the other athletes other than Aries Merritt, he was there, Merritt

0:30:54 > 0:31:00got a very good start. And you did what he needed to do, solid all the

0:31:00 > 0:31:03way through. I don't think he touched any hurdles committee was

0:31:03 > 0:31:08not at risk. A very clean race and he picked up speed in between the

0:31:08 > 0:31:17hurdles. Denise, you would know a bit more than I do but it looked

0:31:17 > 0:31:20fantastic to me.It was a pleasure to watch. Sprint hurdling is about

0:31:20 > 0:31:28frequency. The rhythm into those barriers and off, it is all about

0:31:28 > 0:31:34driving that trail leg of each hurdle. Like Mike says, a great

0:31:34 > 0:31:40start from him. Really silky smooth. We know this is what he can deliver.

0:31:40 > 0:31:49Will Sutton .46 be enough? Will he had to push harder in the final? --

0:31:49 > 0:31:54will 7.46 be enough?Do you do not need to push harder. You want other

0:31:54 > 0:31:59people to make mistakes. He feels good, keep in mind fresh.Look at

0:31:59 > 0:32:02the confidence as he addresses the camera. He is

0:32:02 > 0:32:06the confidence as he addresses the camera. He is in a good place. He is

0:32:06 > 0:32:10running with great confidence. I ran into his brother last night outside

0:32:10 > 0:32:15the hotel, who introduced in cells, he said he is in a really good

0:32:15 > 0:32:22place, and join being captain and is really confident.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25really confident. He has won the prelim, won the semifinal and he

0:32:25 > 0:32:30should be confident going into the final.Andrew Cotter, we saw him

0:32:30 > 0:32:34petting a leader L's dog, Ben. He was very relaxed.

0:32:34 > 0:32:38petting a leader L's dog, Ben. He was very relaxed.Ben was relaxed up

0:32:38 > 0:32:43meeting Andrew Cotter. Lagarde looked pretty useful yesterday, so

0:32:43 > 0:32:50many injuries, blighted by a foot injury. Hurdlers run the gamut of

0:32:50 > 0:33:01injuries. This is how they line up for the third of the semifinals. As

0:33:01 > 0:33:08Colin highlighted, look over Ronald Levy of Jamaica. He had his injury

0:33:08 > 0:33:16problems last year but he might be a threat to Pozzi.

0:33:16 > 0:33:22threat to Pozzi. That is the Polish champion.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25champion. The 27-year-old from Shanghai is one of the fastest

0:33:25 > 0:33:29losers from the first round. Petr Svoboda, form made European indoor

0:33:29 > 0:33:38champion. Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, a big

0:33:38 > 0:33:43figure. A cruel fourth place at the World Championships in Beijing. And

0:33:43 > 0:33:49the Olympics in Rio. Milan Trajkovic, made the final at the

0:33:49 > 0:33:56Olympics in Rio. We did not really get a chance to

0:33:56 > 0:34:02see what Ronald Levy could do in London. 7.49 in his indoor debut in

0:34:02 > 0:34:07Canada last weekend. The Canadian used to run for the States, he has

0:34:07 > 0:34:14dual citizenship. Erik Balnuweit has just won the German title for a

0:34:14 > 0:34:20sixth time. Two going through automatically, the two fastest

0:34:20 > 0:34:25losers at the moment are Aries Merritt, 7.60, and Gabriel

0:34:25 > 0:34:31Constantino of Brazil, 7.60 one. Merritt hopes he can get through the

0:34:31 > 0:34:40big names, mustering for the final later. That is that 5pm.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42later. That is that 5pm. -- at 5pm.

0:35:02 > 0:35:06Clearly away. A little twitch from Martinot-Lagarde. He has a lot to

0:35:06 > 0:35:15do. Martinot-Lagarde leg... Worked so well to take second between Milan

0:35:15 > 0:35:21Trajkovic. A simple sit down address job. Impassive. That was quick, 7.50

0:35:21 > 0:35:26one.

0:35:31 > 0:35:39-- birther. Martinot-Lagarde saves it, it was a poor start and that is

0:35:39 > 0:35:45a whole heap of ooh la la from Martinot-Lagarde.Those are exactly

0:35:45 > 0:35:50the words I was thinking, ooh la la. He must have been thinking, what

0:35:50 > 0:36:02have I done?! All eyes were on levy to see what he was capable of doing.

0:36:02 > 0:36:10The two go through on the right-hand side, middle now,

0:36:10 > 0:36:16side, middle now, Martinot-Lagarde and Trajkovic.Even though you have

0:36:16 > 0:36:19the reputation of running fast, it is important to deliver the

0:36:19 > 0:36:26performances when it really matters. Goodness gracious, Pascal had to

0:36:26 > 0:36:31fight to get bread. Different than in the sprint. When you are

0:36:31 > 0:36:34sprinting, you stay low, at least you have the time to get up. When

0:36:34 > 0:36:40you are faced with a 3.5 foot barrier you have to rush. He was

0:36:40 > 0:36:45good at keeping a good, clean head. Working his way to the field, no

0:36:45 > 0:36:52panicking, rewarded with a season's best.

0:36:52 > 0:36:56best.Trajkovic, Serbian born but settled in Cyprus, running for

0:36:56 > 0:37:02Cyprus. He won the Greek indoor title. Martinot-Lagarde, this is

0:37:02 > 0:37:06certainly throwing everything into this just to make the final.I am

0:37:06 > 0:37:12smiling because I know there will be huge panic, what's Abhay Dunn, try

0:37:12 > 0:37:16to work it through! He is very skilful.Or confirmation of

0:37:16 > 0:37:18to work it through! He is very skilful.Or confirmation of that

0:37:18 > 0:37:27with the new indoor Cypriot record. -- I know there will be huge panic,

0:37:27 > 0:37:35what have I done?!

0:37:53 > 0:38:01Lots of finals to come, that is at 5pm. Only the 4x400 relay after.

0:38:01 > 0:38:07There will be a pause in proceedings in the arena as they pay respects.

0:38:07 > 0:38:14We expect Seb Coe to say a few words about the sad passing of Roger

0:38:14 > 0:38:23Bannister, which we spoke about at the beginning of the programme.

0:38:24 > 0:38:24the beginning of the programme. Just to reiterate the finals that we had

0:38:24 > 0:38:29to look forward to, Pozzi into that 60 metres final.

0:38:29 > 0:38:30to look forward to, Pozzi into that 60 metres final.

0:38:30 > 0:38:35The men's pole vault competition is under way. Seven athletes have a

0:38:35 > 0:38:40global title past or present. The first of those that we will see is

0:38:40 > 0:38:48Barber of Canada. Five metres 45, a very early hate. Good clearance. A

0:38:48 > 0:38:59good start for him. There are world champions, Olympic

0:38:59 > 0:39:03champions, world record holders. A really strong field. Probably the

0:39:03 > 0:39:06best collection of vaulters we have seen in the history of the events in

0:39:06 > 0:39:13this pursuit of a world title here this afternoon. Barber has a chance.

0:39:13 > 0:39:19He is in the mix. This man recently broke the world

0:39:19 > 0:39:26junior record. A very solid clearance. 18 years of age. A

0:39:26 > 0:39:33Swedish Baltic, you might remember his dad, the American, he was

0:39:33 > 0:39:38jumping in the 80s, the early 90s. There is your world champion from

0:39:38 > 0:39:41last summer. Very high-class, hard stepper, another world champion

0:39:41 > 0:39:49walking away out of shot. This man took the title last year, really

0:39:49 > 0:39:56enjoys competing. He stamped his authority last summer. Unbeaten last

0:39:56 > 0:40:07year, Sam Kendricks. Looking to get his competition to a clean start.

0:40:07 > 0:40:14Five 45, Kendricks goes clear. The huge margin.Too easy, I think, for

0:40:14 > 0:40:20him at these early heights. Just carrying a bit of tape around his

0:40:20 > 0:40:25knee, probably has a bit of problem with his patella tendon, his

0:40:25 > 0:40:32take-off leg. It is probably just a precaution.Kendricks and really

0:40:32 > 0:40:41good shape. Raphael

0:40:41 > 0:40:46good shape. Raphael Holzdeppe, another champion from the past. A

0:40:46 > 0:40:49great championship performer, got sideways Ahmad but tidied it up

0:40:49 > 0:40:54nicely. Solid clearance, no casualties at these early heights.

0:40:54 > 0:40:59Getting the measure of the run-up speed, feeling their way through

0:40:59 > 0:41:04heights toward six metres, 5.90 as you can see at the right of your

0:41:04 > 0:41:10screen. Look at that clearance from the German, that is enormous. He

0:41:10 > 0:41:17works off the top of the pole so well.

0:41:21 > 0:41:26well.At the world-record holder is yet to start. Here are your

0:41:26 > 0:41:33athletes.

0:41:40 > 0:41:47I mentioned the French world champion. Lisek is a double world

0:41:47 > 0:41:50medallist. It will be a great spectacle, this pole vault

0:41:50 > 0:41:57competition. He is not the tallest, he is not the strongest but he is

0:41:57 > 0:42:03slick and capable when he gets it right. His world record is six

0:42:03 > 0:42:11metres and 16 centimetres, Lavillenie. Konstantinos Filippidis

0:42:11 > 0:42:19of Greece, the world Indoor Championships when 4014. He has won

0:42:19 > 0:42:32this title before, and goes well. -- the world indoor champion in 2014.

0:42:32 > 0:42:38Shawn Barber, world champion in 2015. Fast on the approach. He takes

0:42:38 > 0:42:45a long run-up. He just decelerated. I think you are right. Slowed down

0:42:45 > 0:42:49into the box, did not quite get into the position he wants for the

0:42:49 > 0:42:53take-off. That is the pole back in the can, checks where his left foot

0:42:53 > 0:43:02take office. Realises where he is under board the jump.Six-metre

0:43:02 > 0:43:13Voltaire when he gets it right, is Barber. -- six-metre vaulter. There

0:43:13 > 0:43:18will be a pause in all competitions to pay respects to Sir Roger

0:43:18 > 0:43:25Bannister, who sadly passed away yesterday. As you can see, the clip

0:43:25 > 0:43:31of that incredible achievement in 1954 at the track in Oxford where he

0:43:31 > 0:43:39broke the four minute smile, the first man to do it, running 359.4. I

0:43:39 > 0:43:44am sure many people in the arena today for the matters and

0:43:44 > 0:43:49inspirational moment. I do not just mean the athletes, I mean

0:43:49 > 0:43:55spectators. Any athletics fans would know who Rogers -- Sir Roger

0:43:55 > 0:44:00Bannister was and what he meant. Sir Roger was a European and

0:44:00 > 0:44:05Commonwealth world medallist, but he will be best remembered for his

0:44:05 > 0:44:09achievement on the 6th of May, 1954. Seb Coe is on the track with other

0:44:09 > 0:44:16dignitaries from the IAAF. Jeff Wightman is explaining everything

0:44:16 > 0:44:23that happens on that great stay. -- happened on that great stay.

0:44:23 > 0:44:28It was as much a psychological barrier as physical. His

0:44:28 > 0:44:32achievements and legendary kindness transcended sport and inspired

0:44:32 > 0:44:37future generations of British distance runners.

0:44:37 > 0:44:41On this day, in Britain and especially in the world of

0:44:41 > 0:44:44athletics, ladies and gentlemen, we remember the great Sir Roger

0:44:44 > 0:44:49Bannister. APPLAUSE

0:45:01 > 0:45:09APPLAUSE

0:45:30 > 0:45:37Thank you, everybody.A nice response from this capacity crowd in

0:45:37 > 0:45:45the Birmingham indoor arena, and seven of the IAAF council members

0:45:45 > 0:45:52you saw there. Sadly missed, Sir Roger Bannister.

0:45:52 > 0:45:57you saw there. Sadly missed, Sir Roger Bannister.

0:45:57 > 0:46:04Another great field event

0:46:04 > 0:46:07Another great field event under way, Nettey the first athlete to set a

0:46:07 > 0:46:14mark, the Commonwealth indoor record-holder. The chance to set

0:46:14 > 0:46:23that marker. Somewhere in excess of 6.50, 6.60 to give the rest of the

0:46:23 > 0:46:31field something to think about. Her personal best is 6.62. Trying to get

0:46:31 > 0:46:44that run up right. A reasonable start for the Canadian.

0:46:49 > 0:46:55Bekh of the Ukraine. Fast on the approach, good on the board. It is

0:46:55 > 0:47:00over six metres. A foul on that particular job.

0:47:00 > 0:47:05The next event on the track is the final of the men's 3000 metres.

0:47:05 > 0:47:10There may be a chance of a clean sweep by one nation, three

0:47:10 > 0:47:14Ethiopians going here and certainly three who are incredibly strong

0:47:14 > 0:47:21contenders.

0:47:21 > 0:47:30contenders. Barega, the very talented youngster. And the

0:47:30 > 0:47:37defending champion, Kejelcha, in the line-up. They will get their

0:47:37 > 0:47:42introductions to the crowd. This could be a very interesting race.

0:47:42 > 0:47:52Missing the US champion, a myriad of athletes who was disqualified.

0:47:52 > 0:47:57Bronze in the 5,000m in Rio, and medallist at World Championships as

0:47:57 > 0:48:08well. Oakley of New Zealand, 7.47 this season and run pretty well in

0:48:08 > 0:48:16his first round to get into the top four. Barega only turned 18 in

0:48:16 > 0:48:20January and ran in northern France recently and that was his first run

0:48:20 > 0:48:28indoors.

0:48:28 > 0:48:33indoors. Birgen with victory in Glasgow, preferred to go for the

0:48:33 > 0:48:383000.

0:48:39 > 0:49:003000. Bouhin of Italy. Kiplangat. Both he and Barega are huge talents.

0:49:02 > 0:49:08The USA does have one representative here, another Kenyan who now runs

0:49:08 > 0:49:13for the US Army and for the United States. He was advanced after being

0:49:13 > 0:49:19a fastest loser.

0:49:20 > 0:49:33a fastest loser. Essalhi. Kejelcha warming up with a smile, still just

0:49:33 > 0:49:4020 but such a familiar figure, the defending champion.

0:49:44 > 0:49:47defending champion. Bleistein came through as one of the fastest

0:49:47 > 0:50:01losers. And another Ethiopian, Balew, checking the one-way system

0:50:01 > 0:50:05and a leisurely jog. So Paula Radcliffe alongside for this one.

0:50:05 > 0:50:10It's fascinating. We always have so many young talents involved often

0:50:10 > 0:50:16from Ethiopia and Kenya but Barega looks the real deal.Yes, he does.

0:50:16 > 0:50:22Many times we see these 18-year-olds come out of Ethiopia and race

0:50:22 > 0:50:26astonishingly well but the difference is Barega seems like he's

0:50:26 > 0:50:30learning and progressing with every race and he seems to be putting that

0:50:30 > 0:50:36into action and really showing the same promise we saw back with Haile

0:50:36 > 0:50:41Gebrselassie.

0:50:41 > 0:50:45Gebrselassie.Best wishes to Andrew Butchart, who continues his

0:50:45 > 0:50:51convalescence with a broken foot. The final of the men's 3000 metres

0:50:51 > 0:51:02under way, a reminder that US came with high hopes for Paul Chelimo but

0:51:02 > 0:51:10just one port on the infield in qualifying and he was disqualified.

0:51:10 > 0:51:13Some people consider a lot of the qualification is harsh but the rules

0:51:13 > 0:51:17have been strictly adhered to at these championships and some big

0:51:17 > 0:51:21names have suffered. It's definitely had an impact on the quality of the

0:51:21 > 0:51:24field in the final and maybe it is something that needs to be looked

0:51:24 > 0:51:29at, the nature of indoor racing needs to be respected more and maybe

0:51:29 > 0:51:33a different set of rules for indoor racing as opposed to outdoors. But

0:51:33 > 0:51:39we will see if the team tactics come into play. Not raising much at the

0:51:39 > 0:51:43moment, sort of trotting around slowly so we often wonder who might

0:51:43 > 0:51:54change the pace.We know that Bleistein did it in the heat. It is

0:51:54 > 0:52:00a different prospect in the final and the main protagonists are all at

0:52:00 > 0:52:04the back, the three Ethiopians. They are the ones... Kiplangat now moves

0:52:04 > 0:52:13to the front. It's interesting when people look at national vests and

0:52:13 > 0:52:25say they must be working as a team.

0:52:28 > 0:52:33Some of them are part of different training setups. There is an a

0:52:33 > 0:52:38different coach here as far as I'm concerned. The Kenyans often

0:52:38 > 0:52:42struggle to get their act together to work as a team but the Ethiopians

0:52:42 > 0:52:47tend to come into it with a plan. Having said that it is rare to have

0:52:47 > 0:52:51a plan that involves doing any work in the early stages. It is usually

0:52:51 > 0:52:56reacting to something the others throw down. We have seen they are

0:52:56 > 0:53:01not prepared to so it is looking for somebody's nerve to snap and

0:53:01 > 0:53:07somebody to decide to do something about it and put some work in.

0:53:07 > 0:53:16Mechal could challenge with a decent finish. It is still very pedestrian,

0:53:16 > 0:53:21you can always tell when it is close together and congested, and this is

0:53:21 > 0:53:25when people get nervous as well. That's why we see three Ethiopians

0:53:25 > 0:53:33at the back staying out of any potential trouble. Stay away from

0:53:33 > 0:53:37all of that and bide your time. It's almost like they are a little bit

0:53:37 > 0:53:46lost. They need to start reacting because they are just turning it

0:53:46 > 0:53:51straight into a 1,500m race. Birgen have the choice coming into these

0:53:51 > 0:53:57championships if he wanted to race in the 1,500m or the 3000 metres.

0:53:57 > 0:54:03There are lots who can do that but there are also lots who can't so why

0:54:03 > 0:54:06don't they give that they go here because they might as well have

0:54:06 > 0:54:11continued their warm up inside.

0:54:15 > 0:54:18continued their warm up inside. Now it just starts to lift a bit,

0:54:18 > 0:54:22everyone is on guard, everyone is watching. Kejelcha having to go very

0:54:22 > 0:54:33wide round the outside as Mechal lifts it. The place has suddenly

0:54:33 > 0:54:36quickened.Yes, we were talking about Barega learning with every

0:54:36 > 0:54:41race, I think he made another discovery there that you have got to

0:54:41 > 0:54:45be alert. If you are going to jog round at that pays you have got to

0:54:45 > 0:54:48be ready to react because when somebody does, they will put the

0:54:48 > 0:54:52hammer down hard and start to break up the field. And here comes Barega

0:54:52 > 0:55:00moving round the outside.

0:55:00 > 0:55:03moving round the outside. As the pace picked up, it now seems to have

0:55:03 > 0:55:08slowed a little again but Barega comes into third place. A little bit

0:55:08 > 0:55:13of barging. It was Oakley just clearing away for himself on the

0:55:13 > 0:55:18inside, I think that was fair enough. The pace has now studied so

0:55:18 > 0:55:26everybody has come back together again.Yes, I think Mechal wanted to

0:55:26 > 0:55:30react and raise the pace. To pick it up a little bit and aim for somebody

0:55:30 > 0:55:36else to come by and take that on and that hasn't happened so we are

0:55:36 > 0:55:41almost back to stage one. Somebody else will try another surge, then

0:55:41 > 0:55:45they will react again, then they will start to get mixed up over

0:55:45 > 0:55:48which will be the real surge when somebody means business but this

0:55:48 > 0:55:56could be it now.In 1,500m race, the pace and jostling is dangerous. Look

0:55:56 > 0:56:04at Kejelcha on the outside. The three Ethiopians hit the front. The

0:56:04 > 0:56:19United States athlete coming through.

0:56:19 > 0:56:29Yes, holding his hand down, saying don't push me.So Kejelcha now

0:56:29 > 0:56:31leading, that all familiar figure we have seen for the last couple of

0:56:31 > 0:56:40years often shadowing Mo Farah on his way to victory.

0:56:40 > 0:56:44his way to victory. Kenya now running for the United States and

0:56:44 > 0:56:50two Kenyans beside him. Mechal has muscled his way in. The Ethiopian

0:56:50 > 0:56:53drifting back to fourth from the back but everyone still very much

0:56:53 > 0:56:57involved in this race.Yes, but there's a lot of pushing and

0:56:57 > 0:57:02shoving. Barega is badly boxed, but boxed by his own countrymen so they

0:57:02 > 0:57:09might do him a favour and let him out. You can see him sitting behind

0:57:09 > 0:57:13Bouhin. Kejelcha is controlling it from the front and we are almost

0:57:13 > 0:57:20starting to see a relay. Is the next Ethiopians going to take a turn?700

0:57:20 > 0:57:25metres remaining and only now the strain beginning to be felt by

0:57:25 > 0:57:32Bleistein at the back. Barega

0:57:33 > 0:57:35Bleistein at the back. Barega passed Kejelcha who responds and keeps him

0:57:35 > 0:57:42at bay. Only now the strain beginning to show.

0:57:42 > 0:57:46beginning to show. Kiplangat coming round the outside, who had that fast

0:57:46 > 0:57:53finish in the qualifying, and now a real race.I think Mechal is badly

0:57:53 > 0:57:57boxed, he might be able to work his way out of it but he might find it

0:57:57 > 0:58:02tough. The Ethiopians might have had a plan coming into it but very much

0:58:02 > 0:58:13they want to come through.400m remaining and Kejelcha turns the

0:58:13 > 0:58:18screw and lift the pace even further. And Kipchirchir, who only

0:58:18 > 0:58:25scraped into the final, starts to feel the heat. The two Kenyans

0:58:25 > 0:58:29shadowing just behind Birgen but is the Ethiopians looking for a clean

0:58:29 > 0:58:37sweep. Birgen starts to make his move now.He looks good. Mechal

0:58:37 > 0:58:45looks desperate. The bell sounds and the noise from the crowd lifting.

0:58:45 > 0:58:52Can Barega get back in fourth place, can company macro start to kick?

0:58:52 > 0:58:59Mechal trying to keep pace. Birgen running hard. Kejelcha, winner two

0:58:59 > 0:59:03years ago, looking for world indoor title again and he will have it by a

0:59:03 > 0:59:10distance. It is Barega who comes through, just, and Birgen is close

0:59:10 > 0:59:20for bronze. No doubt about the winner, once again it is a dance of

0:59:20 > 0:59:24celebration from Kejelcha, world indoor champion over 3000 metres. A

0:59:24 > 0:59:32slow time but a very good race.In the end he managed to squeak inside

0:59:32 > 0:59:37a personal best. It was fierce and fast and furious in the closing

0:59:37 > 0:59:41stages and the man who reacted the best super surges and put himself in

0:59:41 > 0:59:46the best place was Kejelcha and he wasn't willing yet to step aside and

0:59:46 > 0:59:50allow Barega to come through, and Barega have to fight hard to get

0:59:50 > 1:00:02into second place. It was very close for bronze. Is any Ethiopian 1-2-3?

1:00:02 > 1:00:08Kejelcha a long way clear, but have a look at this, Paula.Yes, it's

1:00:08 > 1:00:12like he realised in the closing few strides he had the chance of making

1:00:12 > 1:00:16it any Ethiopian clean sweep at the medals, I don't think we've have

1:00:16 > 1:00:20that yet in the championships. He didn't quite manage it, Birgen

1:00:20 > 1:00:24managed to keep running enough but it was the disappointment of seeing

1:00:24 > 1:00:27the silver medal snatched from him and he backed off a little bit too

1:00:27 > 1:00:32much and you cannot do that when you have people finishing as desperately

1:00:32 > 1:00:37as Mechal.

1:00:37 > 1:00:43We were asked to pick our athletes for the future. Cachopa has a bright

1:00:43 > 1:00:51future ahead of him. Once again defending his title. -- Yomif

1:00:51 > 1:01:00Kejelcha has a bright future ahead of him.

1:01:00 > 1:01:08Back to this women's long jump final, we saw Christabel Nettey of

1:01:08 > 1:01:13Canada, six metres 49. Nobody has really woken up yet. Quanesha Burks,

1:01:13 > 1:01:21the runner-up in the US trials. That is a bigger effort. The white flag

1:01:21 > 1:01:27is raised as a valid jump. Chasing bad lead of six metres 49. If her

1:01:27 > 1:01:32left hand lands outside the pits... I am not happy with that. You have

1:01:32 > 1:01:38raised a very interesting point. It is a pity we can get a sideways

1:01:38 > 1:01:45view. If that hand lands to further back... She has opened up with a

1:01:45 > 1:01:49personal best, but if that hand is landing further back than her feet,

1:01:49 > 1:01:56the jump ought to be measured from birth.6.81 was followed, taking the

1:01:56 > 1:02:07lead. Her team-mate wreath, a little stutter. -- her team-mate, Reese.

1:02:07 > 1:02:12She crowded the board a little bit. If you watch Brittney Reese, she

1:02:12 > 1:02:16shortens her strides to increase frequency speed. She really attacks

1:02:16 > 1:02:25over the last six metres. Six strides in, she really attacks.

1:02:25 > 1:02:326.76, just shy of the lead-off Burks. The last jumper of the first

1:02:32 > 1:02:35round is the Ivana Spanovic. The European indoor champion was

1:02:35 > 1:02:41incredible last year. She was third in Glasgow last weekend. Spanovic,

1:02:41 > 1:02:51first round.That looks really flat as a take-off, but she leans back.

1:02:51 > 1:02:57It is a legal jump. She is efficient, runs across the board.

1:02:57 > 1:03:03Does not get a lot of lift.Did not get the hide, but it is a long way

1:03:03 > 1:03:09into the pits.

1:03:09 > 1:03:13into the pits. This takes into first place, 6.89, at the end of round

1:03:13 > 1:03:21one. What a night it was last night. It

1:03:21 > 1:03:25was a night of drama on and off the track. Disqualifications and

1:03:25 > 1:03:31medallists waiting for their opportunity to get onto the rostrum.

1:03:31 > 1:03:35Earlier Giles thought he might get a medal in the 800, and he did not. We

1:03:35 > 1:03:39did not have time to present the medals for the 60 metres, and what a

1:03:39 > 1:03:45race that was. Everybody was talking about what

1:03:45 > 1:03:49Christian Coleman could do when he came to these championships, and the

1:03:49 > 1:03:55world-record holder did not let anybody down. The world number one

1:03:55 > 1:04:01from last year has had to play second fiddle to Christian Coleman

1:04:01 > 1:04:10this year, and he was pipped for the silver

1:04:14 > 1:04:30silver medal by Chan of China. -- by Bingtian Su of China.

1:04:30 > 1:04:37Bingtian Su of China. You could argue this is the fastest official

1:04:37 > 1:04:41sea-level time. The world-record to set a couple of weeks ago was in

1:04:41 > 1:04:48Albuquerque, at altitude. -- the world record he set a couple of

1:04:48 > 1:04:53weeks ago. 6.30 seven. An incredible performance from Christian Coleman,

1:04:53 > 1:04:57winning his first global title. A silver medal outdoors last year

1:04:57 > 1:05:06behind Justin Gatlin. This time he is the champion.

1:05:11 > 1:05:22NATIONAL ANTHEM OF THE USA PLAYS.

1:05:33 > 1:05:41NATIONAL ANTHEM OF THE USA CONTINUES.

1:06:19 > 1:06:23Five gold medals for the USA yesterday. They will hope for more

1:06:23 > 1:06:28today. For the time being, Christian Coleman can concentrate on the

1:06:28 > 1:06:32summer season ahead. The World Championships and the Olympics to

1:06:32 > 1:06:37come. Can he turn an indoor title into an outdoor one over the next

1:06:37 > 1:06:41couple of years? STUDIO: Michael Johnson, in answer to Steve, is he

1:06:41 > 1:06:46the forerunner, the man they will be chasing?I am not ready to say that.

1:06:46 > 1:06:52If you remember back two years, the Olympic Games, Andree Degrassi was

1:06:52 > 1:07:00the heir apparent to Usain Bolt, before that was Andre Joubert 's C

1:07:00 > 1:07:04and Trey von who were tied. They have both

1:07:04 > 1:07:05and Trey von who were tied. They have both suffered injuries under

1:07:05 > 1:07:10coming back. What we are in store for is a real treat over the 100

1:07:10 > 1:07:13metres as opposed to can Usain Bolt win it and will he break the world

1:07:13 > 1:07:19record again, we will see some great young sprinters who I think have the

1:07:19 > 1:07:22ability to battle it out in those championships and go back and forth

1:07:22 > 1:07:28over the next couple of years. I like Christian Coleman, I think he

1:07:28 > 1:07:31is a fantastic talent and I think you can win some championships

1:07:31 > 1:07:34outdoors and take this world record and this World Championship and

1:07:34 > 1:07:39parlay that into success outdoors, but it will not be easy and just

1:07:39 > 1:07:43because he is the one we are talking about does not leave he is

1:07:43 > 1:07:51automatically the error apparent.

1:07:51 > 1:07:52automatically the error apparent. No more global championships for the US

1:07:52 > 1:07:55athletes, he will focus on the Diamond League and we will see him

1:07:55 > 1:07:58back in a couple of weeks? We might see him dabble in the 200 metres,

1:07:58 > 1:08:06here's a great 200-metre winner.

1:08:06 > 1:08:10here's a great 200-metre winner. -- here's a great 200-metre runner. I

1:08:10 > 1:08:16think the other guys will all be there, we might get some sense the

1:08:16 > 1:08:18summer of what is to come.A New Year.

1:08:18 > 1:08:22summer of what is to come.A New Year. There are two very exciting

1:08:22 > 1:08:26field competition is under way. Steve? COMMENTATOR: The pole voters

1:08:26 > 1:08:32have been beavering away. Sam Kendricks is a brilliant competitor,

1:08:32 > 1:08:36he seems to have developed a way of seducing his opponents into

1:08:36 > 1:08:42believing they cannot win.

1:08:44 > 1:08:48believing they cannot win. 5.60, massive clearance. Perfect so far,

1:08:48 > 1:08:54two jumps, two clearances. Five metres 60. I suppose when you have

1:08:54 > 1:09:00jumped 5.93, as he has this year already, you expect that kind of

1:09:00 > 1:09:05clearance. His campaign to take the world indoor title is going very

1:09:05 > 1:09:12nicely indeed. Off to a great start for the American.

1:09:12 > 1:09:17STUDIO: The Women's 800-metre final is coming up shortly on the track.

1:09:17 > 1:09:21Paula Radcliffe in the commentary box will talk to us about Shelayna

1:09:21 > 1:09:26Oskan-Clarke Great Britain. Looked very good in qualifying. There is

1:09:26 > 1:09:30quality there, when you look at the defending indoor champion,

1:09:30 > 1:09:33potentially the one she will have to get close to to get into the medals,

1:09:33 > 1:09:39it is more than achievable for her to be on the rostrum? It is within

1:09:39 > 1:09:48her compass, she can take a shot. I think the defending champion,

1:09:48 > 1:09:55Niyonsaba, is the favourite.

1:09:55 > 1:09:58Niyonsaba, is the favourite. I think if Shelayna gets it right, which she

1:09:58 > 1:10:02has proven time and time again that she can do and get into the right

1:10:02 > 1:10:06places in the final, if she makes those decisions right she will have

1:10:06 > 1:10:10a chance. In qualifying she proved it, she said it was not how she had

1:10:10 > 1:10:16planned it but she responded so well. Her experience of these big

1:10:16 > 1:10:21championships, it is crucial in the middle distances, your tactics? You

1:10:21 > 1:10:28had to be learning on your feet all the time

1:10:31 > 1:10:33the time and put it into place and make those decisions quickly. That

1:10:33 > 1:10:36is what she did in qualifying, she did not expect it to go so fast. She

1:10:36 > 1:10:40got herself in trouble a couple of times but got out of it.We saw

1:10:40 > 1:10:45earlier Giles come forth in the 800 metres, there was an appeal which

1:10:45 > 1:10:50was overturned. They will hope their camp can bear some fruit. Shelayna

1:10:50 > 1:10:55Oskan-Clarke is the joint captain, with Andy Pozzi. She has enjoyed

1:10:55 > 1:10:59back?Yes, and she has enjoyed seeing the team perform well. Now

1:10:59 > 1:11:06she wants to play her part in it. Thank you, Paula. We will catch up

1:11:06 > 1:11:11with the long jump, Steve? COMMENTATOR: The women's long jump

1:11:11 > 1:11:18is starting to hot up. Brittney Reese, her first leap was 6.70 six.

1:11:18 > 1:11:29She is in fourth place. Spanovic of Serbia, 6.89, is the target.

1:11:29 > 1:11:33Serbia, 6.89, is the target. She likes it.It is a good jump. She

1:11:33 > 1:11:38likes it. Just sinks and lifts, that is how she jumps. There are

1:11:38 > 1:11:41differences between style and technique, you either have a

1:11:41 > 1:11:45straight leg where you run off the board or you bend, either way you

1:11:45 > 1:11:49had to lower your hips and raise them. You can do that by lengthening

1:11:49 > 1:11:58your stride or sinking at the knee. We have seen various styles. No

1:11:58 > 1:12:03improvement, 6.61, Reese still in fourth. Here is your event leader.

1:12:03 > 1:12:10Medals at five global championships, a bronze and a silver at these

1:12:10 > 1:12:19championships, but never the gold. Can Spanovic extend her lead?Tips

1:12:19 > 1:12:23forward a little, the body leans into the box. She lost a bit of

1:12:23 > 1:12:28momentum as she accelerated and dropped off. Not as good. Needs to

1:12:28 > 1:12:34stand up tall on the board. As you said earlier, Tony, just not getting

1:12:34 > 1:12:38up off the board, maybe did not get that Upward propulsion and the

1:12:38 > 1:12:43height we have seen from her in the past. She is in the lead. 6.89, no

1:12:43 > 1:12:49improvement. That long jump continuing, but back

1:12:49 > 1:12:56on the track the 800-metre women's final. Here is the start list.

1:12:56 > 1:13:01Francine Niyonsaba is probably the favourite. Raevyn Rogers has been

1:13:01 > 1:13:08very busy at these championships. Here come the introductions.Lights

1:13:08 > 1:13:12go down.First of all, twice European indoor champion for

1:13:12 > 1:13:18Switzerland, Selina Buchel.Has won the European indoor Championships

1:13:18 > 1:13:27anti occasions. Me and sat there is definitely in that sort of shape. --

1:13:27 > 1:13:34frenzy Niyonsaba is in that sort of shape. Ajee Wilson of the United

1:13:34 > 1:13:38States, US record-holder, won silver in Portland and a bronze outdoors

1:13:38 > 1:13:50last year in London. Shelayna Oskan-Clarke...A great reception

1:13:50 > 1:13:55for Shelayna.

1:13:56 > 1:14:06for Shelayna. A lame as Ethiopia, a great young talent.

1:14:06 > 1:14:10great young talent. -- Alemu of Ethiopia, a great young talent.

1:14:10 > 1:14:16Rogers was never slated to run the final in the four by 400, she helped

1:14:16 > 1:14:20her team qualifier and will win a medal if they, as he expects, win.

1:14:20 > 1:14:26Anyway, she has the 800-metre final. She is in the same training group as

1:14:26 > 1:14:31a Wilson, I think. She has left university. -- the same training

1:14:31 > 1:14:35group as Ajee Wilson. Niyonsaba is the defending champion.

1:14:44 > 1:14:55The women's 800-metre final, four lapse indoors. -- laps.

1:14:56 > 1:15:02I was looking for lane infringement, I did not see any. Shelayna is in a

1:15:02 > 1:15:07decent position, Alemu catching the heels of Wilson. Shelayna is tucked

1:15:07 > 1:15:12on the curb. The girls were very careful for lane infringements.

1:15:12 > 1:15:17Rogers took a long time to come off the curb and come back in. She is

1:15:17 > 1:15:21settled at the back and watching Wilson dictate this race and control

1:15:21 > 1:15:26this race.

1:15:26 > 1:15:30this race. Ajee Wilson has grown in composure and stature. When

1:15:30 > 1:15:34Niyonsaba tries to take back control, she is not having any of

1:15:34 > 1:15:40it.Rogers is tired from the four by four yesterday. Ajee Wilson making

1:15:40 > 1:15:45sure she kept control. Did not want Niyonsaba, who really wanted to get

1:15:45 > 1:15:50to the front. It has been controlled. 59 to 400 metres.

1:15:50 > 1:15:53Oskan-Clarke is still in with a great chance. Five women are

1:15:53 > 1:16:00contesting, Shelayna has to come into contact. She had a little bit

1:16:00 > 1:16:04of a barge with Michelle, Shelayna was letting her know that would not

1:16:04 > 1:16:10happen. She looks tired and needs to fight. Ajee Wilson is responding to

1:16:10 > 1:16:15everything Niyonsaba tries. It is between Niyonsaba and Ajee Wilson.

1:16:15 > 1:16:19Niyonsaba try to get back the defending champion again. Really

1:16:19 > 1:16:24wants to get in front. Wilson doing a cracking job of holding her.

1:16:24 > 1:16:28Niyonsaba tries again. Alemu is in the sight of Shelayna Oskan-Clarke

1:16:28 > 1:16:35stop Shelayna is moving into third. The crowd are going crazy. Niyonsaba

1:16:35 > 1:16:41is going to defend her title superbly well. Niyonsaba wins a

1:16:41 > 1:16:45great 800 final. It is a bronze the Shelayna Oskan-Clarke, who stuck to

1:16:45 > 1:16:51her task well. Could see that the surge with which Niyonsaba and

1:16:51 > 1:16:58Wilson had dragged first of all Alemu and Selina Buchel, Buchel went

1:16:58 > 1:17:03first and then Shelayna had a different target as Alemu tired.

1:17:03 > 1:17:08Hats off to Niyonsaba, a very good performance from her. Ajee Wilson

1:17:08 > 1:17:15did her best to hold her wrath, it was a great scrap. 1:58.31, negative

1:17:15 > 1:17:20spreads, a really good performance but shall Aina Oskan-Clarke joins a

1:17:20 > 1:17:25list of Jane Finch in the first indoor Championships and Joe

1:17:25 > 1:17:32Fanning, Jenny Meadows who got moved on to a silver medal in 2010. Good

1:17:32 > 1:17:34pedigree in the women's 800. Shelayna Oskan-Clarke delivering a

1:17:34 > 1:17:40bronze medal.

1:17:41 > 1:17:47Huge congratulations to wall free women. Congratulations to Ajee

1:17:47 > 1:17:52Wilson, she held off Niyonsaba and made it as difficult as possible for

1:17:52 > 1:17:56her to retain her title. They were both working hard down the back

1:17:56 > 1:17:58straight and at this point Ajee Wilson is just trying to focus and

1:17:58 > 1:18:05hold on. But Shelayna Oskan-Clarke judged this perfectly. She was only

1:18:05 > 1:18:09starting around the bend and I'm sure the noise of the crowd must

1:18:09 > 1:18:14have given her a boost. We felt she was closing in on Alemu before we

1:18:14 > 1:18:21saw it on our screens. Once you start reeling someone in and you can

1:18:21 > 1:18:24see they are tired, it is a huge confidence boost, even though

1:18:24 > 1:18:29Shelayna must have been tired as well, running negative splits, and

1:18:29 > 1:18:35that is a hard way to run the race but she deserved that and it will

1:18:35 > 1:18:41give her a boost moving into the rest of the season. So Shelayna goes

1:18:41 > 1:18:45under two minutes, a personal best and she becomes the six British

1:18:45 > 1:18:51woman to go under two minutes indoors for the 800m and she is

1:18:51 > 1:18:59rewarded with a bronze medal. Ajee Wilson will be disappointed, a

1:18:59 > 1:19:03personal best but she will be disappointed she couldn't hold off

1:19:03 > 1:19:11Niyonsaba. That was a cracking race, .

1:19:11 > 1:19:23Back to the pole vault, Holzdeppe has a foul at this height. He has to

1:19:23 > 1:19:31go clear here. 5.60, second attempt. Much better. Made a mess of the

1:19:31 > 1:19:37first one but showed real character coming back with a solid clearance,

1:19:37 > 1:19:45and the German's campaign continues. Nice jump that for the German. Next

1:19:45 > 1:19:51height, 5.70.

1:19:51 > 1:19:55height, 5.70. This is the only athlete not to have jumped yet, the

1:19:55 > 1:19:59Frenchman world record-holder, as we turn our attention to the world

1:19:59 > 1:20:08junior record-holder, Duplantis. 5.60, also goes clear at the second

1:20:08 > 1:20:14time of asking. Showing some competitive metal there, the young

1:20:14 > 1:20:21Swede. His mum is Swedish, his father is American. As I mentioned

1:20:21 > 1:20:29earlier, a vaulting family.

1:20:29 > 1:20:33earlier, a vaulting family. Barber of Canada in trouble. Two

1:20:33 > 1:20:39consecutive fouls and you are out so he has to go clear. Last chance

1:20:39 > 1:20:47saloon. He's out. A bit of a surprise, three fouls at a pretty

1:20:47 > 1:20:59low height for Shawn Barber. You have got to get the pole up and out.

1:20:59 > 1:21:11A shame for the young lad.Not his afternoon.

1:21:11 > 1:21:15Shelayna is quite rightly lapping up the moment, the crowd loving her

1:21:15 > 1:21:22performance there. Really bullied her round the home straight. Paula

1:21:22 > 1:21:25Radcliffe, she played it so well because she didn't panic at all, did

1:21:25 > 1:21:34she?No, she didn't panic,

1:21:34 > 1:21:36she?No, she didn't panic, at one point it looked like she was more

1:21:36 > 1:21:41towards the back of the field but she kept her composure. She used her

1:21:41 > 1:21:45nous to keep her space and stop people cutting her up and then

1:21:45 > 1:21:49judged it well. Down the back straight was when she really made

1:21:49 > 1:21:54the surge and started to make a big impact on Alemu and was reeling her

1:21:54 > 1:21:59in. The crowd must have given her a boost and knowing she had a medal

1:21:59 > 1:22:04down the back straight, and got a personal best to boot.And a

1:22:04 > 1:22:09fantastic PB because the sixth woman from these shores to go under two

1:22:09 > 1:22:12minutes indoors which really puts her amongst some of the great and

1:22:12 > 1:22:16will give her confidence going to the Commonwealth Games. A season

1:22:16 > 1:22:21that she can get some medals, Oskan-Clarke.Yes, and she's proving

1:22:21 > 1:22:28that with every season, her confidence is getting stronger but

1:22:28 > 1:22:31also her strength is getting better. As she gets stronger, she will take

1:22:31 > 1:22:38a break and build back towards the Commonwealth Games, then back for

1:22:38 > 1:22:43the European Championships. And one day we will hear her when she's not

1:22:43 > 1:22:47having a massive lactic deficit in her interview where she was bent

1:22:47 > 1:22:51over! Obviously speaking to Katharine Merry in the infield, we

1:22:51 > 1:22:56will hear her in a moment speaking and I'm sure she will be more

1:22:56 > 1:23:00composed by then. We will see her in the papers tomorrow no doubt but

1:23:00 > 1:23:04let's speak about the men's 1,500m coming up next on the track because

1:23:04 > 1:23:10we saw Chris O Hare after his heat in a terrible state with his foot.

1:23:10 > 1:23:17He said he was feeling the effects of an injury and obviously went off

1:23:17 > 1:23:22disappointed not

1:23:22 > 1:23:25disappointed not knowing about the disqualification, then being

1:23:25 > 1:23:30reinstated. He is down to race, do you have any news on that?Yes, I

1:23:30 > 1:23:35had a message from him yesterday. Had an MRI on his foot showing

1:23:35 > 1:23:38inflammation but nothing that would be damaged further by racing on it

1:23:38 > 1:23:41today so as far as I'm aware he's planning on coming out and giving it

1:23:41 > 1:23:49his best go today. We are looking forward to this one. Steve Cram is

1:23:49 > 1:23:54your commentator, and it is quite an impressive field.

1:23:54 > 1:24:04COMMENTATOR: Yes, and over the years we've had some great winning this.

1:24:05 > 1:24:12You can go back to the great old days, I remember Marcus O'Sullivan,

1:24:12 > 1:24:16a great Irish runner who won this on three occasions, and wonder whether

1:24:16 > 1:24:21we can get some British success here. Kibet of Kenya made the final

1:24:21 > 1:24:37two years ago. Oskan-Clarke, one of the US' best 1,500m runners.

1:24:37 > 1:24:40Lewandowski dangerous in a slow race, others might want to make sure

1:24:40 > 1:24:46he's not able to use his pace. The man who I think will be a big

1:24:46 > 1:24:50danger, looked very comfortable in qualification, almost back to the

1:24:50 > 1:24:55sort of form he was showing two or three years ago. He has a happy

1:24:55 > 1:24:59knack of winning medals in Championships. Wote, another who

1:24:59 > 1:25:10knows what it's like to get on the rostrum in this event. Craig Engels

1:25:10 > 1:25:15played a canny game yesterday. He still has that moustache though. And

1:25:15 > 1:25:19Chris O'Hare, as you heard Paula laying, has decided to come and

1:25:19 > 1:25:30compete and run.

1:25:34 > 1:25:42Tefera broke the world indoor record in France in January. But in

1:25:42 > 1:25:46Wightman Britain have an excellent contender along with Chris O'Hare,

1:25:46 > 1:25:49looked superb in qualification winning his heat. A very well

1:25:49 > 1:25:55controlled race. In the form of his life heading towards the

1:25:55 > 1:26:00Commonwealth Games where you represent Scotland. Chris O'Hare

1:26:00 > 1:26:07also heading in that direction, hopefully. So, two Brits here with a

1:26:07 > 1:26:15very good Ethiopian, Niyonsaba of Morocco with a lot of experience.

1:26:15 > 1:26:26The youthful exuberance of Tefera to contend with. When he broke the

1:26:26 > 1:26:31record it was his first indoor race, no indoor tracks of course in

1:26:31 > 1:26:43Ethiopia. And Lewandowski, well both Chris and Jake know him well. Jake

1:26:43 > 1:26:48ran a personal best in preparation for this, which is a great way to

1:26:48 > 1:26:53set yourself up.

1:26:55 > 1:26:59set yourself up. This foot injury has set Chris O'Hare back a little

1:26:59 > 1:27:06bit, hopefully he can put that to one side.On your marks...So the

1:27:06 > 1:27:14men's 1,500m final. Seven and a half laps of the track indoors, again we

1:27:14 > 1:27:18don't have any natural front runners here. Wote might be the one who gets

1:27:18 > 1:27:24uncomfortable when it is too slow, that all Ethiopian at the back.

1:27:24 > 1:27:28Tefera, the youngster, we are waiting to see how he conducts

1:27:28 > 1:27:36himself here. Wightman has a good tactical brain. Niyonsaba just

1:27:36 > 1:27:39jogging through this first couple of hundred metres very slowly indeed.

1:27:39 > 1:27:45Yes, when Niyonsaba goes to the front we don't know if it's anything

1:27:45 > 1:27:53but to control it or slow it down. He will be a front runner in the

1:27:53 > 1:27:58race, so too will be Lewandowski. They might as well walk now!I think

1:27:58 > 1:28:03I could keep up with this, just about. You have got to go back all

1:28:03 > 1:28:11the way to another Scot, David Strang who won a medal in the 1990s.

1:28:11 > 1:28:15Jake is looking anxious. This is where you have got to keep your

1:28:15 > 1:28:19nerves. They are just about jogging and this is not what you are used

1:28:19 > 1:28:23to. It makes you feel uncomfortable, you are worried about getting

1:28:23 > 1:28:28tripped. You don't want to be the one to change the pace, you try to

1:28:28 > 1:28:33coax someone else into doing it, that is what Chris is doing there.

1:28:33 > 1:28:39But nobody wants to. Tefera, even though he's 18, he doesn't want to

1:28:39 > 1:28:43be the one either. Nobody wants to commit first.Oskan-Clarke doesn't

1:28:43 > 1:28:50want to be there. Even if Engels wanted to do it he cannot get out

1:28:50 > 1:28:54from where he is. When someone's nerve snaps, they will go hard and

1:28:54 > 1:28:59there will be a quick scramble, and that is when it is dangerous because

1:28:59 > 1:29:03people tried to extricate themselves from the boxes they are in.The key

1:29:03 > 1:29:10also is not to panic when the pace comes on. We saw Shelayna, sometimes

1:29:10 > 1:29:18you have to build your effort. We saw Laura Muir do that and come away

1:29:18 > 1:29:23with two medals. Jake is in in good place around the outside. He's in a

1:29:23 > 1:29:33very good position. For the first time Tefera get things moving.Yes,

1:29:33 > 1:29:37Jake moved out wide to allow himself to get a better view of where people

1:29:37 > 1:29:42were in the field. Having said that, the work he did to get himself in a

1:29:42 > 1:29:49better position was just undone. And he has to stay there and get to this

1:29:49 > 1:29:56position and not give this up. Chris O'Hare at the back now so it is

1:29:56 > 1:30:02Tefera in the lead. Wightman in a good sport. Chris O'Hare at the back

1:30:02 > 1:30:07at the moment and they are just picking it up.This is where it

1:30:07 > 1:30:15shows if you get yourself a good position at the start. If Tefera

1:30:15 > 1:30:22keeps running wide...Would have liked to have seen Jake hold off

1:30:22 > 1:30:29Wote, now he will have to check out and come back. This is good from

1:30:29 > 1:30:38Jake Wightman, an excellent move. Wightman. The three heat

1:30:39 > 1:30:43Wightman. The three heat winners, 1-2-3 at the moment. Wightman has

1:30:43 > 1:30:49told the inside, Lewandowski challenging. This is his territory.

1:30:49 > 1:30:55It is Niyonsaba, and Tefera the youngster, Lewandowski of Poland.

1:30:55 > 1:31:03Wightman has got to hang in. Tefera going to try and strike, but has

1:31:03 > 1:31:09Niyonsaba got enough strength to see it through? Tefera gets the gold,

1:31:09 > 1:31:17Lewandowski with silver, Niyonsaba gets a bronze medal.

1:31:17 > 1:31:22The youngster who broke the world and 20 record on doors in January in

1:31:22 > 1:31:27his first-ever indoor race is the champion. Lewandowski must be

1:31:27 > 1:31:31absolutely delighted that turned into a 800-metre race. The two

1:31:31 > 1:31:37British man, that meant that the big sprint that came, there was a big

1:31:37 > 1:31:40change in position. If you were not in the perfect place that made it

1:31:40 > 1:31:45difficult, but it was about pace at the end and we did not have enough.

1:31:45 > 1:31:49Words just missing out, coming forth, Iguider hanging on for the

1:31:49 > 1:31:56bronze. -- Wote just missing out. Mahtre Lewandowski made the decision

1:31:56 > 1:32:01he was going to commit to the 1500 metres, might have regretted that

1:32:01 > 1:32:05when he saw the 800-metre line-up, but it turned into less than an

1:32:05 > 1:32:10800-metre race. It was about being in the right place and what you had

1:32:10 > 1:32:13in the home straight. He was evenly placed with Jake Wightman on the

1:32:13 > 1:32:20inside, who was maybe in a better position to track through the Heinz

1:32:20 > 1:32:24Tefera, but Lewandowski managed to stay patient, to wait around the

1:32:24 > 1:32:28bend where it is still wide open for the three battling for the bronze

1:32:28 > 1:32:37medal, probably gold and silver were gone at this point in their mind.

1:32:37 > 1:32:44Looking at the pictures afterwards, Iguider was happy. But Samuel

1:32:44 > 1:32:48Tefera, let's see what he can do outdoors and build on this.

1:32:48 > 1:32:55A very exciting prospect. Ethiopia have a feud. We have seen arrogant,

1:32:55 > 1:33:01Cajal Kerr, now Tefera. Great athletes coming through. -- we have

1:33:01 > 1:33:08seen Salamon Braegger, Yomif Kejelcha.

1:33:09 > 1:33:16There was a 55 seconds 400 before that. They ran out of legs little

1:33:16 > 1:33:23bit. The two Brits finished

1:33:23 > 1:33:23bit. The two Brits finished sixth and

1:33:23 > 1:33:30eighth and join us. That was a serious race. You please

1:33:30 > 1:33:37with your performance? Not really. I was hoping to be going for a medal.

1:33:37 > 1:33:42I did not get my positioning right. I was struggling in the last 50

1:33:42 > 1:33:46metres.You are having to fight for position in a few times. It looked

1:33:46 > 1:33:51like you would get the break and slipped back.I did a bit too much

1:33:51 > 1:33:54work at points, something I was hoping not to have to do. To make

1:33:54 > 1:34:04the final was a tick for me, but I wanted more, I am gutted.I will not

1:34:04 > 1:34:07lie, after our conversation yesterday, your foot injury, I did

1:34:07 > 1:34:14not think I would see you. It was bowled coming out.I had an MRI last

1:34:14 > 1:34:18night, went pretty much from the track to the hospital. Do you know

1:34:18 > 1:34:24what, I am happy to be here. I don't like to say that, but with what

1:34:24 > 1:34:28happened yesterday and by last couple of weeks I am happy I was

1:34:28 > 1:34:36able to run. Just could not get my knees up. I thought it is OK, more

1:34:36 > 1:34:43jogging. I thought I was all right added. When we kicked off, I was all

1:34:43 > 1:34:47out the back, could not get my knees in front of me. The power was not

1:34:47 > 1:34:54there. That is a shame. But it is good to have two Brits in the final,

1:34:54 > 1:34:59we will get there.Great to see you both in action, thank you for

1:34:59 > 1:35:03speaking to us. STUDIO: A cracking race but still no medal from a

1:35:03 > 1:35:08British man in these championships. It has all been down to the women.

1:35:08 > 1:35:11We have had another one from Shelayna Oskan-Clarke method took

1:35:11 > 1:35:13bronze in the aid had metres earlier.

1:35:13 > 1:35:18JJ caught up with her. A personal best, bronze medal and you have

1:35:18 > 1:35:22broken the two minutes barrier, which only six women in Britain have

1:35:22 > 1:35:27ever done. A day of accomplishments. I would not say it was the best

1:35:27 > 1:35:31race, I was a bit out of control for the first part, but I had to dig

1:35:31 > 1:35:39deep and know I could catch the girls at the end. I am happy to

1:35:40 > 1:35:41girls at the end. I am happy to get a medal. You said yesterday the race

1:35:41 > 1:35:44did not go to plan, what did you make today? It is quite hard when

1:35:44 > 1:35:49all the girls are quite close, they went out fast. You will possibly get

1:35:49 > 1:35:54boxed in, you had to be aware. Which kind of happened to me, and I was

1:35:54 > 1:35:59stopping and starting but I managed to hold my own and be confident in

1:35:59 > 1:36:05being able to catch the girls back. When you enter the chase round the

1:36:05 > 1:36:11back bends, you were riding on a wave of sound from the crowd. How

1:36:11 > 1:36:15incredible was that?Normally I face everything out, but it is and

1:36:15 > 1:36:21encouraging that you can did not hear it. -- normally I phase

1:36:21 > 1:36:24everything out.You have been the captain this week in a team that has

1:36:24 > 1:36:30done so well, what is it like balancing your roles and

1:36:30 > 1:36:34responsibilities? Nerve-racking? Has it build you up?It was definitely

1:36:34 > 1:36:38nerve-racking up the start because I had to do my speech and I really

1:36:38 > 1:36:43wanted to inspire the team. Now it is congratulating them and making

1:36:43 > 1:36:48them aware of their performances and saying good luck, but has not been

1:36:48 > 1:36:53too draining, I have had to keep focused on what I came here to do.

1:36:53 > 1:36:56You have lead by example, thank you for speaking to us.

1:36:56 > 1:37:01You have lead by example, thank you for speaking to us. COMMENTATOR:

1:37:01 > 1:37:07Back to the pole vault, Filippidis of Greece, a good clearance at the

1:37:07 > 1:37:11previous height. The new height five metres and 70, he will be the first

1:37:11 > 1:37:16athlete to have a go at this new heights. First attempts by previous

1:37:16 > 1:37:27champion. Very good. Confident stuff.

1:37:27 > 1:37:31stuff. Probably not getting towards medal awarding heights just yet, but

1:37:31 > 1:37:36his competition continues nicely. I don't know if he has much more to

1:37:36 > 1:37:44give. He looks like he is right at the end. A good clearance at five

1:37:44 > 1:37:52metres 74 Filippidis. -- five metres 70, four Filippidis. STUDIO: Eilidh

1:37:52 > 1:37:57Doyle had a fantastic run yesterday, taking bronze, her first individual

1:37:57 > 1:38:02medal on the global stage. The hurdler racing on the flat. Laura

1:38:02 > 1:38:05Muir, second final of these

1:38:05 > 1:38:05hurdler racing on the flat. Laura Muir, second final of these

1:38:05 > 1:38:08championships, second medal. A silver in the 1500 metres.

1:38:08 > 1:38:14I spoke to them both earlier. Thank you so much for coming in to join

1:38:14 > 1:38:18this coming huge congratulations to you both. It has been a brilliant

1:38:18 > 1:38:23few days. I saw a wonderful tweeter of the pair of you are enjoying the

1:38:23 > 1:38:27success. Does it mean a bit extra that you are also Scottish

1:38:27 > 1:38:31team-mates, you have come through the system together, to have this

1:38:31 > 1:38:36moment together when you have known each other so long must be lovely?

1:38:36 > 1:38:40Not only are we team-mates but we are from the same town, we went to

1:38:40 > 1:38:50the

1:38:51 > 1:38:53same school, Laura got there. It is really nice we have this bond and

1:38:53 > 1:38:56were able to share it last night.I expect the phone call from head of

1:38:56 > 1:38:59PE for speech day this year. To be so close together and said Dibaba,

1:38:59 > 1:39:03making that step from bronze to silver, now you are breaking through

1:39:03 > 1:39:07on the world stage. It has been pretty monumental, these last few

1:39:07 > 1:39:13days? About such a relief. I have been there or thereabouts for the

1:39:13 > 1:39:17past few years, getting the European medals last year was greatbut it

1:39:17 > 1:39:21has been my first medals in the world stage against really top

1:39:21 > 1:39:27competition, really pleased. From day one to yesterday, did your

1:39:27 > 1:39:34belief system increase from the first medal?

1:39:37 > 1:39:39first medal? Did you really see yourself pushing through? About just

1:39:39 > 1:39:42being so close and being in contention, I thought I could do

1:39:42 > 1:39:45well in 1500. We are going to do good today, it is a matter of racing

1:39:45 > 1:39:48smart and finishing strong. I came out with silver.

1:39:48 > 1:39:54Hats off, Eilidh, you racist smart and pushed into a fantastic

1:39:54 > 1:40:02position. Almost managed to hold off and go for silver.

1:40:02 > 1:40:08and go for silver. -- hats off, Eilidh, you raced smarter.I lost my

1:40:08 > 1:40:12rhythm and my stride in another race, I did not want that in the

1:40:12 > 1:40:16final. Gave myself the best possible chance to be in the medals,

1:40:16 > 1:40:21thankfully it paid off.Heading to Australia soon for the Commonwealth

1:40:21 > 1:40:25Games, Eilidh. Laura, heading back to your veteran area studies. Has a

1:40:25 > 1:40:31bit if you felt so good here that you would like to go to the

1:40:31 > 1:40:37Commonwealth Games? This has been in the planning for three or four macro

1:40:37 > 1:40:42years that I would not be able to do the Commonwealth Games. But the

1:40:42 > 1:40:46Scottish team is so strong, the likes of Eilidh. When you are going

1:40:46 > 1:40:50for really cold runs in Scotland and they are out there, a little bit of

1:40:50 > 1:40:56you will be watching that with a bit of old, God...?A couple of weeks

1:40:56 > 1:41:01ago there was sleet in my face, my face was numb...I could be in

1:41:01 > 1:41:05Australia! You have made the right decisions for you, going through

1:41:05 > 1:41:10with your studies. In your veterinarian to greet wraps up soon?

1:41:10 > 1:41:21-- and your veteran I read degree wraps up soon?Yes.Eilidh, heading

1:41:21 > 1:41:28back over the hurdles? Can't wait to get back.It was a joy to meet your

1:41:28 > 1:41:31gorgeous Rottweiler, Ben. You must have missed him?I will need to

1:41:31 > 1:41:36leave him for five weeks when I go to Australia, that will be hard.

1:41:36 > 1:41:37Thank you so much and best of

1:41:37 > 1:41:41to Australia, that will be hard. Thank you so much and best of luck.

1:41:41 > 1:41:44COMMENTATOR: Brittney Reese not having the best afternoon, one of

1:41:44 > 1:41:48the most decorated athletes at the World Indoor Championships, she has

1:41:48 > 1:41:53won this title three times before, her best so far was 6.76, in fourth

1:41:53 > 1:42:01place. Into round three.A better run of the board. Did not really

1:42:01 > 1:42:06carry the speed across but seemed to have more room. She really needs to

1:42:06 > 1:42:15take off and drive her hips across her foot. Out into the pits. She

1:42:15 > 1:42:20produces it when it matters most but she has lots to spare. Another

1:42:20 > 1:42:25almost 20 centimetres, 6.70 seven. Slight improvement, still in fourth

1:42:25 > 1:42:34place. -- 6.7 seven.

1:42:38 > 1:42:41place. -- 6.7 seven. The Australian, Filippidis increases the only man

1:42:41 > 1:42:48clear so far. What a good attempt that was, a good clearance.That

1:42:48 > 1:42:55will take him into joint first place.

1:42:55 > 1:42:59place.Tenth in Rio, seventh in London, 20 years of age, Kurtis

1:42:59 > 1:43:08Marschall, going well. The athleticism needed to move yourself

1:43:08 > 1:43:16over five metres 70, up in the air. Next up is the women's 4x400 metres

1:43:16 > 1:43:27relay. First to meet the crowd, Poland will go in late one.

1:43:27 > 1:43:29Poland will go in late one. That is three quarters of the team which won

1:43:29 > 1:43:40in Belgrade. One replacement. Italy in lane two.

1:43:46 > 1:43:54Here are Great Britain and Northern Ireland.Meghan Beesley, Hani

1:43:54 > 1:44:06Williams, Allcock and know a veto. -- know a litre oil.

1:44:15 > 1:44:19Strong favourites, the United States. They may be able to push the

1:44:19 > 1:44:27world record of Russia.

1:44:28 > 1:44:36Jamaica gets stronger. MacPherson and Jenkins coming in. Jenkins was

1:44:36 > 1:44:38fifth in the individuals.

1:44:43 > 1:44:50Jenkins in her first indoor heat yesterday.

1:44:50 > 1:44:54I think the United States, if they are to get close to the record of

1:44:54 > 1:45:00Russia, would need a good, honest push from Jamaica as well. Jamaica

1:45:00 > 1:45:03will have designed other than helping the United States to a world

1:45:03 > 1:45:10record. Meghan Beesley is enjoying something, she switches to the

1:45:10 > 1:45:16lead-off leg. So Lee Clark will run the anchor leg. I think all the

1:45:16 > 1:45:20British women have gone for a Dutch platter, I am told. By those who

1:45:20 > 1:45:26know!

1:45:26 > 1:45:30Hannah Williams, sister of Jody Williams, running on the second leg.

1:45:30 > 1:45:41There is another Dutch plat. Amy Allcock. In the Relay, we are

1:45:41 > 1:45:47keeping an eye out for everything. Because so many in the 400

1:45:47 > 1:45:52individual and the Relay changeovers as well, the handovers. So plenty to

1:45:52 > 1:45:55look out for. Great Britain and Northern Ireland in with the chance

1:45:55 > 1:46:00of a medal, but Poland will be strong and the United States are

1:46:00 > 1:46:06favourites. Jamaica might give them a good race.

1:46:07 > 1:46:12a good race. Ukraine with a strong quartet as well. So the final of the

1:46:12 > 1:46:30women's 4 x 100m Relay. Meghan Beesley to lead off the home four.

1:46:31 > 1:46:36Meghan Beesley has gone out very quick indeed. She does this often

1:46:36 > 1:46:43and is running 400 fast and closing down on the Ukrainian Melnyk and for

1:46:43 > 1:46:46the United States, Quanera Hayes taking them out. Jamaica with a bit

1:46:46 > 1:46:51to do at the moment, Tovea Jenkins settled and hoping to finish

1:46:51 > 1:46:55strongly. Poland in a good position and Italy with so much to do

1:46:55 > 1:47:01already.The form book says at USA to win and a struggle for silver and

1:47:01 > 1:47:05bronze with the backend they have, the United States are the hot

1:47:05 > 1:47:11favourite and Jamaica have got McPherson. So imported Meghan

1:47:11 > 1:47:15Beesley digs in deep. She's struggling in the last 50 metres and

1:47:15 > 1:47:20she has got to give Hannah Williams a chance to be involved, with

1:47:20 > 1:47:24Poland, Jamaica and Italy. Like she was yesterday, Williams has got to

1:47:24 > 1:47:29chase here, to try and not panic at this point on the first leg and keep

1:47:29 > 1:47:35closing that gap. Get as close to those medal positions as possible.

1:47:35 > 1:47:41Finalist at the Olympic Games in the hurdles in 2012, Georganne Moline,

1:47:41 > 1:47:44leading the United States, with another hurdler Janieve Russell

1:47:44 > 1:47:47closing down and for Poland, Patrycja Wyciszkiewicz closing down,

1:47:47 > 1:47:51a lot of work for Hannah Williams to do and Ukraine are faring badly in

1:47:51 > 1:47:55the handover and propping up the field. The crowd roaring Hannah

1:47:55 > 1:48:03Williams on to close the big gap to the top three. And that is trouble,

1:48:03 > 1:48:07Georganne Moline has hit the curb. Something to keep an eye on. Russell

1:48:07 > 1:48:14hands of Jamaica to Anastasia Le-Roy, Poland close behind and Amy

1:48:14 > 1:48:17Allcock with work to do for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The

1:48:17 > 1:48:25three teams too far ahead at the moment. Perhaps Poland, they do have

1:48:25 > 1:48:29a very experienced competitor on the last leg, but that is a big gap to

1:48:29 > 1:48:35close. The USA, Jamaica, but the only question is, did Moline put a

1:48:35 > 1:48:40foot inside the curb or stagger or stumble to avoid stepping on it?

1:48:40 > 1:48:43United States leading bass and Jamaica so close, Anastasia Le-Roy

1:48:43 > 1:48:53on the final leg. United States leading, Jamaica, Poland third and

1:48:53 > 1:48:58these two clear of Great Britain. Great effort by Poland to get clear.

1:48:58 > 1:49:01And who knows, the United States could be in for trouble with the

1:49:01 > 1:49:08judges once again. It could be a shame to see, two disqualifications,

1:49:08 > 1:49:11United States a stronger act. Jamaica giving them a fierce race.

1:49:11 > 1:49:18On the anchor leg, individual champion in the 400m, Courtney

1:49:18 > 1:49:22Okolo, close to world record pace and Stephenie Ann McPherson was

1:49:22 > 1:49:27disqualified in the individual and has something to prove. A long way

1:49:27 > 1:49:32clear of the rest. Great Britain and Northern Ireland are working hard in

1:49:32 > 1:49:38fourth place at the moment, is its third or fourth, who knows? Right

1:49:38 > 1:49:43front is Courtney Okolo. McPherson. Chasing gold is Courtney Okolo.

1:49:43 > 1:49:47McPherson has not given up, Poland and third place. McPherson digging

1:49:47 > 1:49:54in, closing a bit, but it goes to the United States. Not quite a world

1:49:54 > 1:50:00record. A championship record. Just outside the Russian world-record

1:50:00 > 1:50:083.20 three. It is gold for the United States. As we expected. And

1:50:08 > 1:50:13also as we expected, Jamaica gave them such a good race. But again,

1:50:13 > 1:50:18you have to say with a caveat because there will be a close look

1:50:18 > 1:50:23at Georganne Moline on the second leg for the United States. The

1:50:23 > 1:50:28United States deserved to win that. They are the strongest four, but the

1:50:28 > 1:50:31judges had been draconian at these championships. And at the moment,

1:50:31 > 1:50:39Great Britain and Northern Ireland of finishing in fourth place. So we

1:50:39 > 1:50:45will wait and see.Yes, we will. What a great race! To within half a

1:50:45 > 1:50:51second of the world-record. Phenomenal race from both Jamaica

1:50:51 > 1:50:56and the United States. Jamaica go third on the all-time list, it

1:50:56 > 1:51:03United States second. And Poland's performs as well.

1:51:03 > 1:51:07performs as well. Quicker than any British team has ever run, 3:26.09.

1:51:07 > 1:51:14So no shame. So did Georganne Moline put a foot inside the curb, no, I

1:51:14 > 1:51:20think she was just avoiding doing that. The Pole Vault Matt was in the

1:51:20 > 1:51:26perfect position for as not to know. Anyway, I think she was just making

1:51:26 > 1:51:31sure, a little off-balance and tired at that point. She looks a was a bit

1:51:31 > 1:51:34nervous.I think they are OK. And there will be some people watching

1:51:34 > 1:51:40at home who was perhaps wish to see a medal for Great Britain and

1:51:40 > 1:51:44Northern Ireland. We have seen too many disqualifications and many

1:51:44 > 1:51:49great performances and old. Georganne Moline just behind the

1:51:49 > 1:51:55Pole Vault bed. Courtney Okolo just outside the Russian world-record in

1:51:55 > 1:52:002006, Stephenie Ann McPherson disqualified in the individual,

1:52:00 > 1:52:03desperate to make amends, but could not quite do it.That is a

1:52:03 > 1:52:08Commonwealth record for Jamaica as well. So records all over the place.

1:52:08 > 1:52:16A solid and good performance as well for the British women, and a 3.30.

1:52:16 > 1:52:22United States gold medal, Poland with a good brands.

1:52:23 > 1:52:28A slight improvement for the Americans in that round. Brittney

1:52:28 > 1:52:31police is unbeaten this year as she settles herself ahead of her fourth

1:52:31 > 1:52:39round jump. Fastest ever on the approach. That looks a better

1:52:39 > 1:52:44take-off.Still not driving the Freeney, that gives you left. That

1:52:44 > 1:52:52converts the speed. But starting to get used to the runway here.Yes,

1:52:52 > 1:52:55feeling her way into this competition. She has improved twice

1:52:55 > 1:53:02already.

1:53:02 > 1:53:05already. 6.89 and police goes into the lead.

1:53:05 > 1:53:10Well, what a

1:53:10 > 1:53:14Well, what a moment this is. I sure she'll have a thought for her old

1:53:14 > 1:53:23coach who sadly died a couple of years ago. Turned into a great 800m

1:53:23 > 1:53:28runner and her coach has kept on the great work. Apart from being one of

1:53:28 > 1:53:33the most popular members of the team, she is a great inspiration to

1:53:33 > 1:53:38many because she always produces her best at the championships and a

1:53:38 > 1:53:46bronze medal in what was a cracking 800m final. Wilson ran bravely and

1:53:46 > 1:53:49she fought with great tenacity to try and hold of the defending

1:53:49 > 1:53:56champion. It was a fast last 200m off a good pace and she was awarded

1:53:56 > 1:54:02with a new personal best.

1:54:07 > 1:54:11with a new personal best. But this athlete moved to be coached by Mark

1:54:11 > 1:54:13Rowland, a great steeplechaser in his own rights, world medallist

1:54:13 > 1:54:22himself. Back in the 1980s. Doing a great job with his group.

1:54:24 > 1:54:25great job with his group. Niyonsaba Burundi taking the gold medal in a

1:54:25 > 1:54:30quick time.

1:54:46 > 1:54:54NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS

1:55:56 > 1:55:59So she defends her title in fine style. That really was a race to

1:55:59 > 1:56:06revel in. Articulate the

1:56:09 > 1:56:14revel in. Articulate the performance of Oskan-Calrke. She said she was

1:56:14 > 1:56:17jealous of Eilidh Doyle treating her pictures. Well, she has got one now

1:56:17 > 1:56:22and she could look a bit happier! She is absolutely delighted. Well

1:56:22 > 1:56:28done, great performance. And Steve said that, Denise, great

1:56:28 > 1:56:34championship performer.Absolutely. She leaves everything on the track.

1:56:34 > 1:56:39You talked about her tactical brain. Her ability to raise her game within

1:56:39 > 1:56:42championships. And that is just a fantastic medal and hopefully it

1:56:42 > 1:56:49will elevate her through the rest of the season. Fantastic job.Let's go

1:56:49 > 1:56:53out because Steve Backley, we have been treated to great field over the

1:56:53 > 1:56:55last couple of days and it will continue for the next couple of

1:56:55 > 1:57:00hours. It has been good, Gabby. And the

1:57:00 > 1:57:09Long Jump is living up to expectations so far.

1:57:09 > 1:57:13expectations so far. Spanovic in second place chasing that lead, at

1:57:13 > 1:57:22the moment.Better left and better speed, for me. Drives the Freeney.

1:57:22 > 1:57:26Drives the right leg up into the air a bit more and gets a bit more left.

1:57:26 > 1:57:31Not as flat as we have seen. Normally, have I should, parallel to

1:57:31 > 1:57:38the ground. But it is working for her.Good on the board and a really

1:57:38 > 1:57:41good leg shoot but she enters the sand and this will challenge the

1:57:41 > 1:57:48lead. World leading jump. Out in front. Spanovic takes control in the

1:57:48 > 1:57:53fourth round.

1:57:57 > 1:57:59fourth round. On the opposite side of the Arena in Birmingham,

1:57:59 > 1:58:07Duplantis getting ready for five metres and 70, getting towards the

1:58:07 > 1:58:12world junior record we saw. Look at that!Good clearance. This has been

1:58:12 > 1:58:14a World Championships where we have seen a lot of youngsters coming

1:58:14 > 1:58:20through. We saw the young Cuban in the Long Jump. The age difference

1:58:20 > 1:58:25between the oldest and the youngest is 13 years so I think we will see a

1:58:25 > 1:58:30lot more of this young man.18 years of age, showing some stability under

1:58:30 > 1:58:40pressure. Duplantis, really good clearance. The reigning champion,

1:58:40 > 1:58:46Sam Kendricks, looking to go from outdoor champion last summer to

1:58:46 > 1:58:54indoor champion here in Birmingham. Kendricks. 5.70. Such a clean

1:58:54 > 1:59:07jumper.It is too easy! Lovely textbook pole vaulting.Perfect for

1:59:07 > 1:59:14Sam Kendricks. First-time clearances carrying no foul, that bodes well

1:59:14 > 1:59:19for his placings should he be challenged for height.Flawless so

1:59:19 > 1:59:24far. Good, isn't it?

1:59:27 > 1:59:30far. Good, isn't it?So finally, the only athlete to have passed every

1:59:30 > 1:59:34height so far, to match the clearance of Kendricks, and he does.

1:59:34 > 1:59:39Just goes off a little bit to the light touch to the right, he should

1:59:39 > 1:59:44come straight in the 12 o'clock, but it's so low, he does not need to.It

1:59:44 > 1:59:49is game on, the Frenchman Lavillenie looking good, so is Kendricks. The

1:59:49 > 1:59:52Pole Vault going exactly to plan. This is going to go down to the

1:59:52 > 2:00:00wire. Great competition.

2:00:00 > 2:00:02wire. Great competition. Lavillenie, champion two years ago in Portland.

2:00:02 > 2:00:10Looking to defend.

2:00:12 > 2:00:16Back to the long jump, where Brittney Reese was in the lead

2:00:16 > 2:00:25momentarily. But I Ivana Spanovic wrestled it away from her.She

2:00:25 > 2:00:28dropped her feet in early. Reasonable speed. And then just

2:00:28 > 2:00:34didn't get her feet out ahead of centre of gravity, really. She

2:00:34 > 2:00:40drives the knee, goes up. Pulls back down from the knees. The shins go

2:00:40 > 2:00:47into the ground. That bodes well for a last round jump. That will maybe

2:00:47 > 2:00:51not challenged. It is not her best job. But she has got to be

2:00:51 > 2:01:03optimistic going into the final round. There is a cut in round five.

2:01:03 > 2:01:07Let's see if Quanesha Burks does it again with the left-hander. Huge

2:01:07 > 2:01:17rotation.Fouled it. It tipped forwards.

2:01:17 > 2:01:20forwards. If your feet land before you touch outside the pitch, that is

2:01:20 > 2:01:29fine. As long as that hand is further forward, or further away

2:01:29 > 2:01:33from the long jump board than the first contact with the sand, that is

2:01:33 > 2:01:43fine. I hope that makes sense!Clear as mud.Or sand!More big news to

2:01:43 > 2:01:47bring you. It wasn't the United States who were ultimately

2:01:47 > 2:01:50disqualified for Georgeanne Moline's foot. Jamaica have been

2:01:50 > 2:01:57disqualified. The waiting athlete being in the wrong position for the

2:01:57 > 2:02:00incoming athlete. We will look at things. It does mean that Great

2:02:00 > 2:02:04Britain and Northern Ireland will get a bronze medal. Jamaica, who had

2:02:04 > 2:02:10earned the silver, will not get the silver. Another disqualification at

2:02:10 > 2:02:15these championships. But a different rule infringement. Steve, you have

2:02:15 > 2:02:21been keeping an eye on this as well. This does happen occasionally. It

2:02:21 > 2:02:27happens. It has happened to Great Britain before. Back in 2006 at the

2:02:27 > 2:02:31Commonwealth Games, England were not in the right order. You get placed

2:02:31 > 2:02:35in order at the changeover line based on where they are in the back

2:02:35 > 2:02:40straight. Normally outdoors it is at the 200 metres mark. It doesn't

2:02:40 > 2:02:47matter if your runner comes past. She wasn't in second place around

2:02:47 > 2:02:52the back straight with 100 to go. You have to line up where the

2:02:52 > 2:02:57officials walk you out. She was walked out in third place. She

2:02:57 > 2:03:02jostled into second. That is why she has been disqualified.Let's look at

2:03:02 > 2:03:10the second changeover. That is fine. They are brought out in those

2:03:10 > 2:03:13positions and they stay there. But it was the first changeover from

2:03:13 > 2:03:21Jenkins to Russell. Jamaica, who were several -- silver-medallist,

2:03:21 > 2:03:25have been disqualified under the rule. And it means that Great

2:03:25 > 2:03:29Britain and Northern Ireland get the bronze medal. Meghan Beesley, Hannah

2:03:29 > 2:03:35Williams, Amy

2:03:35 > 2:03:38Williams, Amy Allcock and Zoe Sharp.

2:03:38 > 2:03:42bronze medal. Meghan Beesley, Hannah Williams, Amy Allcock and Zoe Sharp.

2:03:42 > 2:03:4521 disqualifications at these championships. After the athletics

2:03:45 > 2:03:49are over just after half past five, we will have a bigger chat about

2:03:49 > 2:03:56that. Some of these toe the line maybe. Maybe we are all suspicious

2:03:56 > 2:04:00of that. But this was a clear rule infringement.I'm always wondering

2:04:00 > 2:04:05if the athletes are told and warned beforehand before they go out there.

2:04:05 > 2:04:08This is one of those obscure rules. It is one that can of goes against

2:04:08 > 2:04:13common sense when you are there. You are thinking, my athlete is coming

2:04:13 > 2:04:18in second, we are going to have to cross one another. Let's make it

2:04:18 > 2:04:23easier. So yeah, she's moving in. This athlete is saying, no, belong

2:04:23 > 2:04:33there. She knows the rules. It's one of those things, it is a clear rule.

2:04:33 > 2:04:39I would agree this to -- with this disqualification based on the rules.

2:04:39 > 2:04:44But you saw the official stepping onto the track to correct the

2:04:44 > 2:04:47movement. She should have enforced it, been a bit stronger. It was

2:04:47 > 2:04:51definitely a mistake by the Jamaican.I think she tried to. She

2:04:51 > 2:04:57was trying to say, you go back where you were placed.Node disagreement

2:04:57 > 2:04:57here.

2:04:57 > 2:04:57you were placed.Node disagreement here.

2:04:57 > 2:05:03Long jump time. Steve Backley. We are in the final round. Brittney

2:05:03 > 2:05:07Reese has one final chance to convert her second place to a gold

2:05:07 > 2:05:12medal. She did exactly this two years ago. That was in the last

2:05:12 > 2:05:16round of these championships. See as won it three times. She is chasing

2:05:16 > 2:05:24six metres 96.She decelerated and slowed down into the board. She gets

2:05:24 > 2:05:30a white flag. No, I think she knows that is not enough. Those hand

2:05:30 > 2:05:39gestures. Sinks on the penultimate step and that slows down.6.64 it

2:05:39 > 2:05:46is. She has got to settle for a silver medal. She's not used to

2:05:46 > 2:05:53that. Three times champion. Her work is done.

2:06:00 > 2:06:11Six metres and 85 at second man.

2:06:11 > 2:06:19The only athlete left who can stop Ivana Spanovic.

2:06:20 > 2:06:25Ivana Spanovic.A lot of height. But not enough speed across the board to

2:06:25 > 2:06:29take into the pit. She slowed down and really went to lift. It

2:06:29 > 2:06:35converted the speed to lift and dropped.Ivana Spanovic takes gold.

2:06:35 > 2:06:40It was bronze four years ago. Silver two years ago. And now she has got

2:06:40 > 2:06:49the full set. That will look good in the medal cabinet, wanted?I haven't

2:06:49 > 2:06:54got a medal cabinet. Have you got one?! Brilliance scenes. You can see

2:06:54 > 2:06:59what it means to her. She was incredible last year taking the

2:06:59 > 2:07:03European indoor title. Maybe not quite in that same shape but good

2:07:03 > 2:07:17enough to be the best in the world. The German wins bronze. That is what

2:07:17 > 2:07:28it feels like to come second.

2:07:29 > 2:07:33There is a confirmation of the medallists. I Ivana Spanovic, a

2:07:33 > 2:07:38world leading jump.

2:07:40 > 2:07:51world leading jump. She beats a previous champion.

2:07:55 > 2:08:03Andrew Pozzi with the season's best time indoors.A cracking start. And

2:08:03 > 2:08:12he wins it. A smile from Aries Merritt, will also go through. Much

2:08:12 > 2:08:19better from Pozzi. That is a stunning run.

2:08:20 > 2:08:23stunning run. The last individual event on the track is upon us.

2:08:23 > 2:08:25stunning run. The last individual event on the track is upon us. And

2:08:25 > 2:08:31it involves Andrew Pozzi. He will be expected to push himself to the

2:08:31 > 2:08:38front of this race. This is here for him, isn't it? He could win this?He

2:08:38 > 2:08:43could win this. He has run really well throughout the rounds. He ran

2:08:43 > 2:08:48fantastic in the semifinal. Team captain. No medals yet for team GB.

2:08:48 > 2:08:52There is a lot that he could do for himself and this team. He is well

2:08:52 > 2:08:56positioned to do it. It is a matter of running the same type of races we

2:08:56 > 2:09:01have seen him run over the rounds. This semifinal, a good clean start.

2:09:01 > 2:09:07Clean over the hurdles. Nice and efficient. No real issues. That is

2:09:07 > 2:09:11what he needs to do. I think it is all he can do. Obviously the French

2:09:11 > 2:09:18athlete is fantastic and has run amazingly. I don't think there is

2:09:18 > 2:09:24anything Andy can do about that.He has to run his own race.

2:09:24 > 2:09:29Martinot-Lagarde had a stumble and pulled himself back. That must be a

2:09:29 > 2:09:32slight worry from a British perspective because he looks very

2:09:32 > 2:09:38good indeed? He looked good, but unfortunately for him he can be

2:09:38 > 2:09:41quite inconsistent. He touched the little bit on the blocks there which

2:09:41 > 2:09:45caused him to not react as well as he should have. But because he is so

2:09:45 > 2:09:52tall and he is so powerful, he was able to use the frequency and power

2:09:52 > 2:09:56of the fraud to pull himself back into second place. He is dangerous.

2:09:56 > 2:10:05Using his long legs there to get Trajkovic back in.In that

2:10:05 > 2:10:09frequency, given that rhythm going his what is best. I think from a

2:10:09 > 2:10:14Andrew Pozzi can get out and stay relaxed under pressure. If you can

2:10:14 > 2:10:18do this, this could be a fantastic race for him. There's anybody who

2:10:18 > 2:10:22knows what it is like to run fast indoors it is the word's fastest man

2:10:22 > 2:10:28ever over the hurdles indoors. Colin Jackson still holds that time.

2:10:28 > 2:10:32Colin, we saw a very fast time from Andy Pozzi. Does he need to run any

2:10:32 > 2:10:38quicker? Row will that time be enough? He needs to keep their very

2:10:38 > 2:10:41cool head. He is in the same lane in the final as he was in the

2:10:41 > 2:10:46semifinal. He has to get out of the blocks, as Denise said, well, and

2:10:46 > 2:10:53hold it all together. He will not have to press whatsoever. Even if

2:10:53 > 2:10:55people challenging, let them challenge and perhaps make mistakes.

2:10:55 > 2:11:00He should be out there in front from about hurdle three. He needs to hold

2:11:00 > 2:11:05on.It has been a good few days for the British team. They have picked

2:11:05 > 2:11:09up some medals, some good performances. Andy Pozzi would be in

2:11:09 > 2:11:13that group going forward through this next cycle that we would expect

2:11:13 > 2:11:17big things from. This could be a real breakthrough for him?Yes, I

2:11:17 > 2:11:26think so. He regularly wins on the European stage. This is a step up to

2:11:26 > 2:11:29the world stage. It will be imported free to go out there as favourite

2:11:29 > 2:11:34and perhaps take this title. He is more than capable doing that.

2:11:34 > 2:11:37The athletes coming out in just a moment. But Steve

2:11:37 > 2:11:38The athletes coming out in just a moment. But Steve Backley, the

2:11:38 > 2:11:42pole-vault competition is hotting up.

2:11:42 > 2:11:46Yes, it is taking its time to get towards the business end. But we

2:11:46 > 2:11:49getting there. Emanuel paralysis of Greece, who held the world junior

2:11:49 > 2:11:55record briefly.

2:11:55 > 2:12:01record briefly. Armand Duplantis with the world junior record. He

2:12:01 > 2:12:11goes clear at 5.8 zero. How about that! He loves it.

2:12:11 > 2:12:14that! He loves it.He just snaked its way around the bar. Look at it

2:12:14 > 2:12:22means to him.Brilliant clearance from the Greek youngster. He did

2:12:22 > 2:12:25hold of the world junior record very briefly. That would be the world

2:12:25 > 2:12:32junior record. What a clearance. A lifetime best in a World Indoor

2:12:32 > 2:12:38Championship saw an 18-year-old. What a bright future he has in this

2:12:38 > 2:12:45event. Great scenes.

2:12:45 > 2:12:49event. Great scenes.Well, at 20 years of age, there is a crop of

2:12:49 > 2:12:52youngsters. Kurtis Marschall from Australia looking to match that

2:12:52 > 2:13:04clearance. And he does! The pole-vault indeed hotting up.

2:13:04 > 2:13:06pole-vault indeed hotting up.A real talented crop of youngsters going

2:13:06 > 2:13:13very nicely indeed. The atmosphere continues to build inside this arena

2:13:13 > 2:13:17in Birmingham as we near the end of these World Indoor Championship sand

2:13:17 > 2:13:22and eagerly anticipated final to say the least. Gabrielle Constantine of

2:13:22 > 2:13:36Brazil. Introduced to the crowd. Roger Iribarne of Cuba. He came

2:13:36 > 2:13:43through just ahead of Aries Merritt. What about Pascal Martinot-Lagarde?

2:13:43 > 2:13:50Writes Andy edge the semi. -- he was right on the edge in the semifinal.

2:13:50 > 2:13:55If he guesses start right he may be the favourite. Manga did not get it

2:13:55 > 2:13:58wrong and is semifinal. He ran beautifully to take a victory. He is

2:13:58 > 2:14:06the French champion. Talking of good runs, Milan Trajkovic the second

2:14:06 > 2:14:15quickest qualifier.

2:14:15 > 2:14:19quickest qualifier. He had to rely on being a fastest loser to make the

2:14:19 > 2:14:24final, Aries Merritt. Former Olympic champion. Current world record

2:14:24 > 2:14:28holder. Jarret Eaton, the second American in this line-up. Came in

2:14:28 > 2:14:37with great hopes. Just occasionally fails to deliver.

2:14:37 > 2:14:43fails to deliver. He is the joint team captain. He is very local.

2:14:43 > 2:14:46Effectively a home track. Certainly a home crowd who will rue -- willing

2:14:46 > 2:14:52to victory. What competition he is against. Because for other events I

2:14:52 > 2:14:56have seen some of the biggest names not here, or perhaps those who did

2:14:56 > 2:15:02come failing. This event is strong. Perhaps a shame that Omar McLeod

2:15:02 > 2:15:11could not make the trip. Apart from that it is loaded.

2:15:15 > 2:15:25So Andrew Pozzi focused. The centre of attention for so many here. But

2:15:25 > 2:15:35up against Aries Merritt Constantino. Martinot-Lagarde.

2:15:36 > 2:15:43Constantino. Martinot-Lagarde. Milan Trajkovic and Jarret Eaton.

2:16:00 > 2:16:09Back they come. It was Milan Trajkovic and Jarret Eaton. A gasp

2:16:09 > 2:16:19from the crowd as the second gunshot cracked.

2:16:19 > 2:16:27cracked. Looking at Trajkovic in the light blue, Milan Trajkovic. And he

2:16:27 > 2:16:38will be out. Holzdeppe, of Germany. First

2:16:38 > 2:16:45attempt. 5.8 two. He gets it as well, so he joins Marschall, of

2:16:45 > 2:16:53Australia. First-time clearances of five metres 80. And the event

2:16:53 > 2:16:59continues.Back to have a look at this and Trajkovic, alongside Jarret

2:16:59 > 2:17:07Eaton. And very sadly. We will disqualify the athlete in lane six.

2:17:07 > 2:17:15The bell tolls for him. That is one where he perhaps did not know

2:17:15 > 2:17:19because it was close. He will have felt it was on the edge. And

2:17:19 > 2:17:25reaction time does not lie. A warm applause for Trajkovic, from the

2:17:25 > 2:17:28Birmingham crowd, but little consolation. Trajkovic has gone and

2:17:28 > 2:17:34he had a chance. He has been going so well, the second quickest

2:17:34 > 2:17:48qualifier at 7.50 one. And down to seven. -- 7.5 one.

2:17:48 > 2:17:53It just adds to the nerves and tension these men will be feeling.

2:17:53 > 2:18:00Aries Merritt, Gabriel Constantino, Pascal Martinot-Lagarde flanking

2:18:00 > 2:18:12Pozzi. Jarret Eaton and Roger Iribarne, of Cuba, in lane eight.

2:18:12 > 2:18:24Silence and they are settling once again.

2:18:25 > 2:18:37Ready now for the final of the men's 60 metres hurdles.

2:18:44 > 2:18:49This time, they go, Martinot-Lagarde, Pozzi leading at

2:18:49 > 2:18:57the moment. Jarret Eaton is coming through, Pozzi across the line.

2:18:58 > 2:19:047.46, who went that time to win the gold medal? So tight between Andrew

2:19:04 > 2:19:09Pozzi and Jarret Eaton. They don't know. They look together. All eyes

2:19:09 > 2:19:18turn to the big screen. For the name to appear. And it is Andrew Pozzi

2:19:18 > 2:19:24has the gold medal. Pozzi has it by 100th of a second from Jarret Eaton,

2:19:24 > 2:19:30the crowds don't know yet, they do now and Pozzi knows. The first man

2:19:30 > 2:19:33of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to winning gold at these

2:19:33 > 2:19:40championships. And how they celebrate! For their captain. Pozzi

2:19:40 > 2:19:46with gold. European indoor champion and now champion of the world, what

2:19:46 > 2:19:52a win, what a race! Jarret Eaton with the silver. But it all belongs

2:19:52 > 2:19:58to Andrew Pozzi. What a tremendous run by this young man! We have

2:19:58 > 2:20:01waited time and time. We have known what he is capable of and we decided

2:20:01 > 2:20:05on so many occasions that if he can shake off those injury problems he

2:20:05 > 2:20:10has, he is truly a world beater. He has come here to Birmingham, his

2:20:10 > 2:20:15home track, delivered a great heat. Wonderful semifinal. And now when

2:20:15 > 2:20:19the pressure is on it even though he made some mistakes, he still kept a

2:20:19 > 2:20:24cool head. He pulled himself back into contention and he came off the

2:20:24 > 2:20:30last barrier and he drove very hard for the line. And what a well

2:20:30 > 2:20:36deserved victory for Pozzi. The smile of a champion, cries of Pozzi

2:20:36 > 2:20:40around the arena. Look at this gold medal winning run.Out from the

2:20:40 > 2:20:45blocks, he is focused. Shakes of Martinot-Lagarde early and look at

2:20:45 > 2:20:51Jarret Eaton, absolutely flying. And at this stage, it was his race. He

2:20:51 > 2:20:53makes a mistake going into this barrier and clatters it with his

2:20:53 > 2:20:58lead like and drags him right back, Pozzi going forward and he works

2:20:58 > 2:21:04hard. He was not going to lose that on the lip. It wasn't flawless. He

2:21:04 > 2:21:09stands on the hurdle, reverses at the crucial end of the race making

2:21:09 > 2:21:19sure that Pozzi just takes a great victory.Watching Pozzi here, that

2:21:19 > 2:21:28last barrier from Jarret Eaton, as the shot widens out.

2:21:28 > 2:21:30the shot widens out. Pozzi's race, and early start up. It was clean, it

2:21:30 > 2:21:34makes such a difference, clean over the final barrier, Jarret Eaton was

2:21:34 > 2:21:38not and that is the difference, winning by 100th of a second.

2:21:38 > 2:21:42Brilliant performance from him. You are anxious when somebody hits the

2:21:42 > 2:21:47barrier during the acceleration phase which is one, two and three.

2:21:47 > 2:21:50Andrew smashed that hurdle and that is when you saw the big gap appear

2:21:50 > 2:21:57instantly. Because Jarret Eaton did not do that. He goes out and takes

2:21:57 > 2:22:04control well, but he is with that lead leg, it throws him back. And

2:22:04 > 2:22:09when you take your weight back, it is difficult to recover. As well as

2:22:09 > 2:22:15this young man did. He kept a cool head and he definitely will have

2:22:15 > 2:22:18seen Jarret flying in front of him. It is horrible for Martinot-Lagarde

2:22:18 > 2:22:21because he got a decent start, Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, and he

2:22:21 > 2:22:26could have been the favourite. Clean over the barrier. He hammers that

2:22:26 > 2:22:30barrier, doesn't he? He tries to recover but instead of taking it

2:22:30 > 2:22:34higher, he decides to take a risk and cream the barrier. It didn't

2:22:34 > 2:22:39work and he goes backwards. Pozzi fighting for the line. He wanted

2:22:39 > 2:22:43this title. He knows what he is capable of in himself and his heart

2:22:43 > 2:22:49and he so wanted this. Look how he dives for the line! Lean, Andrew,

2:22:49 > 2:22:55lean! Brilliant, brilliant, Billy and!Lean, he did and when he did.

2:22:55 > 2:22:59And this is when he found out, Jarret Eaton knew before it and he

2:22:59 > 2:23:03was already congratulating him. There it is, the celebrations of the

2:23:03 > 2:23:08first British man to win a medal at these championships. The women still

2:23:08 > 2:23:16leading 6-1. Aurel Manga with bronze, for France. And by 100th of

2:23:16 > 2:23:21a second, Andrew Pozzi, champion of the world.

2:23:21 > 2:23:25STUDIO: Some gold medals just make you feel really good. It is always

2:23:25 > 2:23:31great for the home crowd to see a British at the Excel, but that was

2:23:31 > 2:23:36fantastic, Denise, from Andrew Pozzi.Just outstanding. He clearly

2:23:36 > 2:23:39arrived at these championships in great form, but to consistently

2:23:39 > 2:23:43deliver what we asked of him, what he has asked of himself in these

2:23:43 > 2:23:49championships is brilliant, valiant hurdling.Michael, he did not get

2:23:49 > 2:23:54rattled by what was going on around him, Martinot-Lagarde was falling

2:23:54 > 2:24:00apart.And he proved himself from the beginning, if I just go and run

2:24:00 > 2:24:05my race and I run it clean, that is the best I can do. It puts him in a

2:24:05 > 2:24:09great position, so he will go into the finals and do it again and that

2:24:09 > 2:24:13he has done each round, he has been very consistent and it has worked

2:24:13 > 2:24:19really well and it's great to see that pay off at the World

2:24:19 > 2:24:23Championships in the last individual event of these championships.

2:24:23 > 2:24:26Fantastic that the men have finally got themselves their medal. They had

2:24:26 > 2:24:31to wait until the last individual event. But it means Great Britain

2:24:31 > 2:24:39now on seven medals in total, including the 4 x 400m, but in Great

2:24:39 > 2:24:42Britain to third in the medal table, which is impressive, just picking

2:24:42 > 2:24:50them up slowly. Would this be in excess of what they targeted? No,

2:24:50 > 2:24:55they set their targets high, they were well aware that it is a double

2:24:55 > 2:24:58championship season because they are moving on to the Commonwealth Games

2:24:58 > 2:25:02and they have had to make those decisions. To get the two gold

2:25:02 > 2:25:03medals, that has made a big difference.

2:25:06 > 2:25:11It has set off on the right note and we have seen Laura Muir getting so

2:25:11 > 2:25:15close and not getting that and the rest of this team see her get it and

2:25:15 > 2:25:19you think, Andrew Pozzi, I have been close, this is my time. And once

2:25:19 > 2:25:28that. Rolling, it picks up momentum. Yes, Andrew Pozzi and Shelayna

2:25:28 > 2:25:30Oskan-Clarke clearly popular to be voted Captains. They held their

2:25:30 > 2:25:36positions and they have delivered and Andrew Pozzi will send this home

2:25:36 > 2:25:42crowd happy. But first of all, it is the medal ceremony, Steve Cram, we

2:25:42 > 2:25:50are all very happy with that.

2:25:51 > 2:25:55What a way to finish a cracking championships. We know we set our

2:25:55 > 2:26:01targets high, as Paula said. As we see the roster. Despite the fact

2:26:01 > 2:26:07there were absentee athletes and qualifications -- disqualifications.

2:26:07 > 2:26:161,500 metres, very precocious talent, Tefera, just 18 years of

2:26:16 > 2:26:19age, taking another gold for Ethiopia. Lewandowski takes the

2:26:19 > 2:26:28silver.

2:26:28 > 2:26:36NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS

2:27:19 > 2:27:25APPLAUSE

2:27:25 > 2:27:29Well, six weeks ago, this young man had never run an indoor race. He is

2:27:29 > 2:27:34now the world record-holder for juniors, indoors. And the World

2:27:34 > 2:27:44Indoor Championships Samuel Tefera, of Ethiopia.

2:27:45 > 2:27:49STUDIO: Chris O'Hare and Jake Wightman win that 1,500 metre race,

2:27:49 > 2:27:54Paula Radcliffe, Jake Wightman said he was upset and disappointed with

2:27:54 > 2:27:58his performance in that. Yes, I think what Jake did, he

2:27:58 > 2:28:02reacted a little bit too much to the mood. In a race like that when it is

2:28:02 > 2:28:06going to go really fast at one stage, you kind of only need to make

2:28:06 > 2:28:11that big move ones. And he did it two or three times and he surged a

2:28:11 > 2:28:15bit and he will kick himself when he looks back at the times because he

2:28:15 > 2:28:19finished faster. He will definitely learn from this experience.

2:28:19 > 2:28:24Well, the new indoor champion of the world over the 60-metre hurdles is

2:28:24 > 2:28:25with JJ.

2:28:28 > 2:28:34When they make a movie about this competition, it will involve you, a

2:28:34 > 2:28:37Birmingham local, trying to win the first British medal at this

2:28:37 > 2:28:40championships in the final race on the track, then A false start, then

2:28:40 > 2:28:45a photo finish and you go away with the gold, can you believe it?No, my

2:28:45 > 2:28:49heart stopped at the end, I knew at the fifth hurdle, was behind and I

2:28:49 > 2:28:54can't believe how much I wanted it, throwing my body up the line. I just

2:28:54 > 2:28:59about got there. This championships has been amazing and to be voted

2:28:59 > 2:29:03co-captain for this championships is the biggest honour of my life. Every

2:29:03 > 2:29:08single member of this team has just been perfect. And I am just a later

2:29:08 > 2:29:12that I could win at the end.Coming into this championship, there is a

2:29:12 > 2:29:15lot of talk including from yourself about how you needed to come away

2:29:15 > 2:29:19with a medal from this, how is it coping with that and what is the pay

2:29:19 > 2:29:24off like?Every interview we have done this year, I have said I am in

2:29:24 > 2:29:30great shape. I did in with the fastest time, I was ranked tenth,

2:29:30 > 2:29:3411th, but consistently, in training, am running well and is trying to be

2:29:34 > 2:29:37as confident as possible and enjoying the atmosphere. I knew that

2:29:37 > 2:29:41was coming but I knew it would be so competitive so to win in a great

2:29:41 > 2:29:44time is just perfect.Becoming a World Champion, what that will do

2:29:44 > 2:29:49for your confidence, should Colin Jackson be quaking in his boots?!

2:29:49 > 2:29:53No! He has helped me an awful lot with my career and I have the

2:29:53 > 2:29:57benefit of having the world record-holder helping me out.Is

2:29:57 > 2:30:02this a springboard for the outdoors? Absolutely. I think I am only here

2:30:02 > 2:30:06for a week and we go to the gold Coast to prepare for the

2:30:06 > 2:30:10Commonwealth Games. There is no way I could turn down coming to

2:30:10 > 2:30:14Birmingham for this World Indoor Championships, an absolute delight!

2:30:14 > 2:30:17It has been a delight to watch, congratulations and enjoy your medal

2:30:17 > 2:30:20ceremony.

2:30:20 > 2:30:24He will think it is a very good decision to do both major

2:30:24 > 2:30:28championships. Some athletes deciding to forego these

2:30:28 > 2:30:31championships. Everybody has their own personal journey and they juggle

2:30:31 > 2:30:39their season. Laura Muir is putting your educational needs first this

2:30:39 > 2:30:43year. If you can win a gold medal and go to the Commonwealths and back

2:30:43 > 2:30:47it up, then to the European Championships, this is the kind of

2:30:47 > 2:30:51season you really can breakthrough. We have talked about that since day

2:30:51 > 2:30:54one. These championships are an opportunity for many athletes,

2:30:54 > 2:31:00whether it is those trying to strike -- crack -- scratch and claw their

2:31:00 > 2:31:03way onto the medal podium and consistently failed to live up to be

2:31:03 > 2:31:07potential they have shown in the past. And then athletes like Andy,

2:31:07 > 2:31:11just waiting for the right opportunity and for everything to

2:31:11 > 2:31:14happen at the right time. Frame to be in the best shape of his life and

2:31:14 > 2:31:20to have the right mindset. That came true for him today. The timing is a

2:31:20 > 2:31:24little bit odd for this season for a lot of these championships. But for

2:31:24 > 2:31:28some athletes it will work really well. Like Andy Pozzi. He will go to

2:31:28 > 2:31:35the Gold Coast. It will not be next year when he starts to build of

2:31:35 > 2:31:39these championships. It will be next month. And that is a real good

2:31:39 > 2:31:44opportunity for him.I think athletes spend a lot of time

2:31:44 > 2:31:48planning about what they do and when they do it. They have to be ready

2:31:48 > 2:31:55when they are ready. There are so many championships. From what I have

2:31:55 > 2:32:00seen so far from the athletes so far come they have managed to step up.

2:32:00 > 2:32:03They have delivered when it matters and utilise all the experience that

2:32:03 > 2:32:09they have had over the years, whether it has been a -1, but this

2:32:09 > 2:32:16pressure has been positive. And Andy Pozzi epitomises that from me.Some

2:32:16 > 2:32:19of the best in the world were here. This is one of the events where you

2:32:19 > 2:32:25can translate this to the outdoors. There is little difference. There is

2:32:25 > 2:32:28very little difference in terms of start and technique and speed

2:32:28 > 2:32:33between the hurdles. This will just continue on for another 40 metres.

2:32:33 > 2:32:3850 metres.

2:32:38 > 2:32:4350 metres. But you do have to look at this situation. It is a unique

2:32:43 > 2:32:47situation in that this is a situation where Andy doesn't have to

2:32:47 > 2:32:50be the fastest in the world. He just needs to run the best race he can

2:32:50 > 2:32:56and be clean over the hurdles. Aries Merritt is not at his best. The

2:32:56 > 2:33:00fastest person in the world this year is not hear from the US. We

2:33:00 > 2:33:04have to be honest and be realistic about what this means for the

2:33:04 > 2:33:08outdoors. It is great for a confidence booster. But Andy will

2:33:08 > 2:33:12know, he knows the best hurdlers in the world, and this will give him

2:33:12 > 2:33:17the confidence to compete with them. Yes, he has to work on things

2:33:17 > 2:33:21physically, from a speed and hurdle perspective, to be better, to be

2:33:21 > 2:33:27faster. Mentally, I can compete with the best. His mental attitude has

2:33:27 > 2:33:33been very impressive, Pollock?Yeah, and you can only beat who turns up

2:33:33 > 2:33:37on the day. That is what he has done. That is what is important. He

2:33:37 > 2:33:42has pulled it back. Even he said at hurdle five he thought it was gone

2:33:42 > 2:33:45but he was still fighting for it. Then it comes down to how much you

2:33:45 > 2:33:48really wanted and how much you are focused on that big target and what

2:33:48 > 2:33:56you are prepared to do to get there. I think he probably said thank you

2:33:56 > 2:34:01to: because that was a Jackson did at the end as well! You talk about

2:34:01 > 2:34:06Colin and you talk about arriving at the Championships. It is raising

2:34:06 > 2:34:13your game. You want to take the opportunity. Always arrive at the

2:34:13 > 2:34:17Championships absolutely fit, you don't always arrive. He has been

2:34:17 > 2:34:25really good, really focused. It is great to watch. The pole vault

2:34:25 > 2:34:28competition is proving, as we said about so many of these events, it is

2:34:28 > 2:34:33proving there is a really exciting young crop of pole vaulters on the

2:34:33 > 2:34:37world stage. They are using this Arena, this platform, to just show

2:34:37 > 2:34:39us what they are about,

2:34:39 > 2:34:39Arena, this platform, to just show us what they are about, Steve

2:34:39 > 2:34:43Backley. It bodes well, doesn't it?Very much

2:34:43 > 2:34:48so. They are taking their time though. This has gone on beyond what

2:34:48 > 2:34:52was expected. I think it was midnight in Rio. I don't think it

2:34:52 > 2:34:55would be that bad. But it is two hours and 20 minutes since he

2:34:55 > 2:35:01started this competition. And nine athletes are still involved.

2:35:01 > 2:35:06Including the world champion. San Kendricks carrying a foul already.

2:35:06 > 2:35:115.80.

2:35:17 > 2:35:26Filippidis agrees get ready. -- of Greece. One of my favourite

2:35:26 > 2:35:31performances from those Rio Olympics, it had an entire country

2:35:31 > 2:35:35celebrating in the street after anyone gold in an historic

2:35:35 > 2:35:42competition. But he has to go clear here. This was a few moments ago.

2:35:42 > 2:35:48But he couldn't. He couldn't do what he did two years ago in performing

2:35:48 > 2:35:54under pressure. The Olympic champion not quite in shape. He has had some

2:35:54 > 2:36:01problems since taking that title. As we come back to see Filippidis. One

2:36:01 > 2:36:12of the oldest. 31 years old now. The same age as the Frenchman. First

2:36:12 > 2:36:20attempt. Too much. This may be the height that starts to sort out the

2:36:20 > 2:36:25medal contenders. Nine athletes have jumped five metres, 88 or better

2:36:25 > 2:36:34this year. A second consecutive foul for Filippidis. Three and he is out.

2:36:34 > 2:36:40He will only get one more attempt at its height. He needs to clear it. Or

2:36:40 > 2:36:44he can pass again and go to the next tide. He can debate that for a

2:36:44 > 2:36:58little while.So then, starred Yacob of Sweden.

2:36:58 > 2:37:01of Sweden. -- three consecutive fouls. This is the last chance for

2:37:01 > 2:37:05the Swede to stay involved. He has jumped very nicely indeed this

2:37:05 > 2:37:15afternoon. The 24-year-old. This would be a massive lifetime best.

2:37:15 > 2:37:235.78 is his personal best from this year. Outdoor personal best of 5.70.

2:37:23 > 2:37:28Very much in new territory as he stands back looking up at the

2:37:28 > 2:37:34highest bar he has ever attempted. If you think you can, you are

2:37:34 > 2:37:47halfway there. Does he believe? 5.8 five. Final attempt.

2:37:49 > 2:37:52five. Final attempt. He didn't get the poll out early enough and put

2:37:52 > 2:37:57the energy into it. He probably would have been quite nervous. 5.80

2:37:57 > 2:38:02would have been a personal best for him indoors. He has gone for it. He

2:38:02 > 2:38:07has thought, if I can clear 5.85 that will make me competitive for

2:38:07 > 2:38:12muddle. It is not about the performance, it about winning.

2:38:12 > 2:38:16Unfortunately it didn't happen for him today. But he will live to fight

2:38:16 > 2:38:28another day.The Swede is done. As we see a man, a young man, Emmanouil

2:38:28 > 2:38:35Karalis. He went absolutely bonkers when he went clear at five metres

2:38:35 > 2:38:40and 80.That was a personal best for him. It may have been a Greek junior

2:38:40 > 2:38:44record for him as well. That kind of performance, we can understand why

2:38:44 > 2:38:50he was a little happy.5.78 was a junior record. It stood for two

2:38:50 > 2:38:59weeks this winter. Good attempt. That was excellent. I loved the

2:38:59 > 2:39:04energy. The poll may have been soft. What I mean is when it bends it

2:39:04 > 2:39:09takes too long to uncoil. Because it is still uncoiling it goes past the

2:39:09 > 2:39:15bar and knocks it off. He jumped 5.78 earlier this winter. It was on

2:39:15 > 2:39:22the 25th of February. Armand Duplantis of Sweden jumped 5.8 it.

2:39:22 > 2:39:27So he held the world record for two weeks. That has to be some kind of

2:39:27 > 2:39:32record in itself. The coach is looking at the video. He has got his

2:39:32 > 2:39:35phone in his hand. He will have been videoing and double checking before

2:39:35 > 2:39:46making that final comment.Kurtis Marschall. Another young man who is

2:39:46 > 2:39:51jumping very nicely indeed. Experienced 20-year-old. I say that

2:39:51 > 2:39:57because he is very good at championships. He has proved that

2:39:57 > 2:40:04when he was 18 at Rio and he came tenth. 19 when he came to London

2:40:04 > 2:40:10last summer in the outdoor version of these championships. A strong

2:40:10 > 2:40:20looking cut. That tiny glitch at the start. It has been perfect sense. He

2:40:20 > 2:40:24has not jumped indoors. So it is a seasoned's best. World junior

2:40:24 > 2:40:33silver-medallist two years ago. No one clear yet at 5.80 five. Still no

2:40:33 > 2:40:39one clear. The bottom and was not straight enough in front of him to

2:40:39 > 2:40:47put the bend into the poll. Another Australian herder -- Polter. There

2:40:47 > 2:40:52have been quite a crop of Australians pole vaulter. Steven

2:40:52 > 2:41:05Caulker. -- Steve Hooker. He has got two more attempts at this height. We

2:41:05 > 2:41:11have still got nine athletes involved.

2:41:11 > 2:41:18involved. All the big names and some youngsters. And this man, Raphael

2:41:18 > 2:41:27Holzdeppe. Previous champion. 28 years of age now. 5.80. He was clear

2:41:27 > 2:41:33at the first jump. And if he can do that again now, he will take himself

2:41:33 > 2:41:39into the lead. For athletes have attempted this height. All four of

2:41:39 > 2:41:49them have failed. 5.85 then. We haven't seen a clearance now for

2:41:49 > 2:41:57about six, seven jumps. The pole vaulter has gone a bit tepid at the

2:41:57 > 2:42:01moment.The first person who clears this height puts themselves in the

2:42:01 > 2:42:10medal, obviously.

2:42:10 > 2:42:15medal, obviously. The best attempt so far. But another foul. From tepid

2:42:15 > 2:42:20to Luke warm, do you think? He was close. It wasn't the best we have

2:42:20 > 2:42:28seen so far. Raphael Holzdeppe in second place. It will be the Swede

2:42:28 > 2:42:39next. And then San Kendricks. Who once this most? A clearance here may

2:42:39 > 2:42:48do the job. Who knows?I definitely think so.

2:42:48 > 2:42:56think so. So the full line-up there. The last medals to be contested at

2:42:56 > 2:43:01this world indoor Championships. Great Britain with a young, well

2:43:01 > 2:43:07they're not all youngsters, but certainly an inexperienced team,

2:43:07 > 2:43:12shall we say. Can they produce something here a little bit special.

2:43:12 > 2:43:15The women ended with a bronze medal after the disqualification of

2:43:15 > 2:43:23Jamaica. This is a good team, Trinidad and Tobago. They were not

2:43:23 > 2:43:26as good as we thought they might be in qualification. Full of great

2:43:26 > 2:43:38experience. The Czech Republic. Maslak, because of two

2:43:38 > 2:43:43disqualifications in the final of the individual event, which Spain

2:43:43 > 2:43:49won so impressively. Spain not in this. A change because Lee Thompson

2:43:49 > 2:43:55comes in to join these three men, who ran superbly well. Plenderleith

2:43:55 > 2:44:02will now be on the second leg. Jamal Rhoden-Stevens and Lee Thompson.

2:44:02 > 2:44:07Poland have a very strong squad. They will be tough, very tough. I

2:44:07 > 2:44:13expect them to be among the medals. A real scrap for the medals, which

2:44:13 > 2:44:23will include Belgium. Which include three members of the same family.

2:44:23 > 2:44:29And then the United States, who have kept their one in four from

2:44:29 > 2:44:36qualification.

2:44:36 > 2:44:40qualification. So the United States will start as favourites. But

2:44:40 > 2:44:43there's Poland team looks good. Belgium with a lot of experience.

2:44:43 > 2:44:48But Great Britain, with a performance are not even sure they

2:44:48 > 2:44:52might have expected in qualification, they run the fourth

2:44:52 > 2:44:59fastest time ever by a British quartet. -- ran. They will be led

2:44:59 > 2:45:05off by Owen Smith. A Welshman. Coached by Matt Elias, who was him

2:45:05 > 2:45:15self pretty good in the relays. He is going to hand to ground handily.

2:45:15 > 2:45:20-- Grant Plenderleith. The former footballer. He is on the second leg.

2:45:20 > 2:45:29He ran the last leg yesterday. Then Rhoden-Stevens. And Lee Thompson.

2:45:29 > 2:45:35Plenderleith and Lee Thompson from the same club. Sheffield.

2:45:39 > 2:45:44We are just hearing news, the women just winning a medal and the British

2:45:44 > 2:45:48women have been disqualified. It is on our computer and we will follow

2:45:48 > 2:45:54that up. The Bretton -- the Great British women's 4 x 400m team who

2:45:54 > 2:45:58thought they had been advanced to a bronze medal at Dina disqualified

2:45:58 > 2:46:12for bumping and barging. There is the graphic. That is for obstruction

2:46:12 > 2:46:17or for pushing.

2:46:17 > 2:46:26or for pushing. OK, we will get back to that. So, Owen Smith on the first

2:46:26 > 2:46:41leg. Kerley for the USA, Borlee, for Belgium. Zalewski for Poland.

2:46:41 > 2:46:45Belgium. Zalewski for Poland. Owen Smith doing a great job in the

2:46:45 > 2:46:54leader leg and he has to match these big stars for pace. We are watching

2:46:54 > 2:46:584-lane infringements and everything, Eagle eyes on everybody. Kerley of

2:46:58 > 2:47:02the United States, they are the favourites, Poland will make life

2:47:02 > 2:47:07difficult and Owen Smith here. Great Britain have to stave off as much as

2:47:07 > 2:47:13they can and hope Lee Thompson brings them a medal. Great Britain

2:47:13 > 2:47:18just behind Trinidad and Tobago. Fred Kerley so frustrated not to

2:47:18 > 2:47:21make the individual, third at the US championships and he will hand over

2:47:21 > 2:47:28to the man who won the US title, Michael Cherry and give them a big

2:47:28 > 2:47:33lead. But the Polish quartet in a good position in second place. Great

2:47:33 > 2:47:38Britain and Northern Ireland with work to do. In third place at the

2:47:38 > 2:47:42moment and trying to close in on Belgium, Plenderleith.USA

2:47:42 > 2:47:49absolutely flying. At that clock is correct, on the first leg, they are

2:47:49 > 2:47:52the world record holders, twice broken the world records in these

2:47:52 > 2:48:01championships. Last time was... They have won their last six gold medals

2:48:01 > 2:48:05after some discord occasions. The USA leading, Poland getting closer.

2:48:05 > 2:48:15Cherry looking a little tired. Michael Cherry handing over to

2:48:15 > 2:48:19Aldrich Bailey and the usual confusion in the handover to avoid

2:48:19 > 2:48:25the outgoing athletes. But it is Bailey. And for Trinidad and Tobago,

2:48:25 > 2:48:31it is Asa Guevara. And for Great Britain, Rhoden-Stevens trying to

2:48:31 > 2:48:34get chased on Jonathan Sacoor, Belgium. We bought the United States

2:48:34 > 2:48:39might go further clear but they are being reeled in by Poland. A good

2:48:39 > 2:48:47like by Asa Guevara for Trinidad and is Tobago, but how much do they have

2:48:47 > 2:48:51left?USA, Poland, Trinidad and Tobago, Belgium still in this, Great

2:48:51 > 2:49:00Britain and long way to go at this point with the baton safely in the

2:49:00 > 2:49:04hands of Vernon Norwood. And Poland have a great runner on the last leg

2:49:04 > 2:49:09with five metres to chase them down. Inside world-record pace at the

2:49:09 > 2:49:15moment. And they are flying. Can Vernon Norwood bring this home? A

2:49:15 > 2:49:19lap to go, a proper battle for the silver and bronze. United States in

2:49:19 > 2:49:29the lead. Norwood, Zalewski, Poland. Against Borlee, who is trying to get

2:49:29 > 2:49:34in return. Poland moving away from the battle for brands, USA in front,

2:49:34 > 2:49:37Vernon Norwood coming under pressure, look at Zalewski trying to

2:49:37 > 2:49:42close him down! It is going to be Poland's gold medal! Poland win it

2:49:42 > 2:49:51in a new world record as well! Poland stun the world of 4 x 400m

2:49:51 > 2:50:00running. Zalewski. Sorry, Jakub Krzewina running a brilliant last

2:50:00 > 2:50:06leg. Look at the joy and the surprise of one or two Mako of his

2:50:06 > 2:50:14team-mates. We said Poland would be amongst the medals but who knew they

2:50:14 > 2:50:20could go that quick? The first leg the United States were leading and

2:50:20 > 2:50:25we saw Krzewina could finish strongly. Norwood is probably going

2:50:25 > 2:50:29to think, I have thrown this away for my team, they were inside

2:50:29 > 2:50:34world-record pace. But the last two runners were not as strong as they

2:50:34 > 2:50:39could have been and Great Britain could never get on pace. A great

2:50:39 > 2:50:43performance and the Borlee brothers have run quick to drag their team

2:50:43 > 2:50:46through but barring disqualifications, bold to Poland,

2:50:46 > 2:50:52at United States have to settle for silver and Belgium take the bronze,

2:50:52 > 2:50:56in a new national record for them. You said to look out for this Polish

2:50:56 > 2:51:02quartet before this started, at the United States in the men's 4 x 400m

2:51:02 > 2:51:06have a target on their back but we have highlighted Krzewina, he just

2:51:06 > 2:51:09missed out on a place on the individual final and we highlighted

2:51:09 > 2:51:15how strong he is in the closing stages. He muscled his way past

2:51:15 > 2:51:19Norwood, who is a high ad lib. Krzewina bringing it home. And that

2:51:19 > 2:51:24is as unexpected as it was widely celebrated by Poland, astonishing

2:51:24 > 2:51:29row. Great Britain and Northern Ireland some way down and they could

2:51:29 > 2:51:33not live with the pace of the others, and great run for Belgium.

2:51:33 > 2:51:37This is the United States's medal to lose and what a run from Krzewina!

2:51:37 > 2:51:46And I think when you look at the scrap going on, at 100 separating

2:51:46 > 2:51:51third and fourth. Krzewina out here, just watch his team-mate crossing

2:51:51 > 2:51:55the line. You'd think the USA have won this the last six times, the

2:51:55 > 2:51:59previous three when they did not when they were disqualified, and the

2:51:59 > 2:52:04time before that, they broke the world record. This is that event,

2:52:04 > 2:52:10they always win this event. Not this time, Poland win it, a new

2:52:10 > 2:52:15world-record, gold to Poland. United States take the silver. And a new

2:52:15 > 2:52:18national record for Belgium and Trinidad and Tobago. The British

2:52:18 > 2:52:24team ran a little quicker than they did in the heats, I have excelled

2:52:24 > 2:52:31themselves, in sixth place. The women's result has changed, as

2:52:31 > 2:52:37we mentioned. Great Britain and Northern Ireland have been

2:52:37 > 2:52:44disqualified now. Disqualified under that rule that is barging, bumping,

2:52:44 > 2:52:48obstruction is the official word. United States take the gold, Poland

2:52:48 > 2:52:51take the silver and Ukraine move up to bronze because Jamaica, who

2:52:51 > 2:52:55thought they were seconds, they were disqualified, and Great Britain

2:52:55 > 2:53:00moved up to third, but they were disqualified.

2:53:00 > 2:53:06Right, back to the Pole Vault and we have seen a succession of fouls.

2:53:06 > 2:53:12Piotr Lisek Kendricks and Renaud Lavillenie the three favourites, the

2:53:12 > 2:53:22next three athletes to try this height of 5.85. Nobody clear yet.

2:53:22 > 2:53:26Piotr Lisek goes clear finally. A big jump from the big man, world

2:53:26 > 2:53:36indoor tour winner. Very consistent. He has jumped high SO he may have

2:53:36 > 2:53:42more to give, but he goes into first place. The giants of the Pole Vault

2:53:42 > 2:53:47have woken. Good determination. He scared me a bit with that scream at

2:53:47 > 2:53:55the top of the runway! Heat dashing is more powerful than the other

2:53:55 > 2:53:59athletes, carries the biggest poles. Used them to good effect. But

2:53:59 > 2:54:05Kendricks carries the shortest. But he is so athletic on the top of the

2:54:05 > 2:54:13pole. World outdoor champion. He has a fail at the previous height. Now

2:54:13 > 2:54:165.85, the first attempt from Kendricks and he gets it.So

2:54:16 > 2:54:22athletic off the top of the pole, both him and the Polish athlete,

2:54:22 > 2:54:30Lisek, they are confident enough that they link 5.85, they can just

2:54:30 > 2:54:36go to 5.85 and be confident to clear it. They are confident and toying

2:54:36 > 2:54:43with the competition.Good clearance, the next height is 5.90.

2:54:43 > 2:54:48Earlier today in London, Sir Mo Farah competed in the inaugural

2:54:48 > 2:54:51half-marathon in London ahead of his preparations for the London Marathon

2:54:51 > 2:54:56next month and Chris Denise was watching.

2:54:56 > 2:55:00Away we go in the wheelchair race and David Weir again renewing his

2:55:00 > 2:55:05rivalry with the silver bullet in the centre of the picture, who will

2:55:05 > 2:55:12come out on top this time. Away we go in the inaugural vitality

2:55:12 > 2:55:17because, Sir Mo Farah doing battle against Callum Hawkins, the British

2:55:17 > 2:55:22number two, in the shades. And the reigning London Marathon champion

2:55:22 > 2:55:29from Kenny. Mo Farah has been training hard at altitude

2:55:29 > 2:55:37immediately and five miles and, is this a decisive break? Patient in

2:55:37 > 2:55:43the early stages, Sir Mo Farah has opened up a gap already. There is

2:55:43 > 2:55:51situation pack, Josh Griffis leading the way and the gap is considerable.

2:55:51 > 2:55:59It was just a surge. Mo Farah is reeled in. And Callum Hawkins is

2:55:59 > 2:56:06much closer. Shall Perdue and Louis Partridge going straight to stride,

2:56:06 > 2:56:12they know each other well. And it is Callum Hawkins's turn to make a

2:56:12 > 2:56:17brace -- a break, approaching Tower Bridge. And Mo Farah playing his

2:56:17 > 2:56:25part. Solid -- Charlotte Perdue has been in great form and training in

2:56:25 > 2:56:29Australia. Just beyond halfway. And the three main runners in the men's

2:56:29 > 2:56:34race still stride for stride, coming off the bridge, with Hawkins again

2:56:34 > 2:56:39doing the lion's share of the work. They will do a left turn into

2:56:39 > 2:56:48Southwark. The chasing pack again with a lot of ground to make up.

2:56:48 > 2:56:51Charlotte Perdue and Louis Partridge still going together. Team-mates

2:56:51 > 2:57:00with a bit of colour for company. And Mo Farah, who has been quite

2:57:00 > 2:57:04content to keep quiet at the back and let the other two Mako do the

2:57:04 > 2:57:07work, looking very comfortable indeed, as if he is out for a Sunday

2:57:07 > 2:57:13morning jog on the streets of London. Perdue and Partridge coming

2:57:13 > 2:57:19over Tower Bridge, still inseparable. Have been in great form

2:57:19 > 2:57:27in 2018. And is this Wanjiru's turn to make his presence felt? Mo Farah

2:57:27 > 2:57:32has been quite content to let the others do the work. But David Weir

2:57:32 > 2:57:39beaten once again, a comfortable victory for the Olympic champion.

2:57:39 > 2:57:46Victory on the streets of London once again. Callum Hawkins making

2:57:46 > 2:57:50another surge, will this one be decisive? He has put in a great

2:57:50 > 2:57:56effort today. Sally, Lily Partridge has been dropped by Perdue and is

2:57:56 > 2:58:03playing catch-up. And there is Perdue, who ran so well in Japan

2:58:03 > 2:58:08just before Christmas. Mo Farah, the clubs are of physically and may be

2:58:08 > 2:58:12metaphorically. Is this him saying, enough is enough, time to get

2:58:12 > 2:58:18racing? And they are still racing over Tower Bridge. 200m to go, Mo

2:58:18 > 2:58:22Farah edging in front. Half a shortage of the track. We know all

2:58:22 > 2:58:27about his finishing speed from his track days, can he turn it on here?

2:58:27 > 2:58:34Final twists and turns as we entered Greenwich. The Cutty Sark interview.

2:58:34 > 2:58:39Mo Farah, Wanjiru still on his shoulder. I laughed and turn, a

2:58:39 > 2:58:43right-hand turn, and Mo Farah, can he turn on the style and the speed

2:58:43 > 2:58:48for the home crowd? And there he is, a big finish from Mo Farah in the

2:58:48 > 2:58:53big half. He wins this race. He wanted the win, it looks like he has

2:58:53 > 2:59:01got the win, and Mo Farah once again winning on the streets of London.

2:59:01 > 2:59:06And it was all about getting the victory here today. Charlotte

2:59:06 > 2:59:10Perdue, what a performance. Huge personal best. Other in minute

2:59:10 > 2:59:16sliced from her previous lifetime best. Small in stature, but a huge

2:59:16 > 2:59:19talent and huge guts and we will look out for her once again in the

2:59:19 > 2:59:26London Marathon next month.

2:59:26 > 2:59:29London Marathon next month. But today was all about this man, Mo

2:59:29 > 2:59:35Farah winning a in London. So against all the odds, a big half

2:59:35 > 2:59:39managed to beat the big chill. Victory for Mo Farah, perhaps he

2:59:39 > 2:59:44would have referred a stiffer test today, but he looks in good shape

2:59:44 > 2:59:48ahead of the London Marathon. Likewise, Charlotte Purdue with a

2:59:48 > 2:59:54huge personal best. And a Swiss double in the wheelchair race.

2:59:57 > 3:00:01Mo Farah winning in the inaugural London half and we have a hotline to

3:00:01 > 3:00:07the Farah camp because Paula Radcliffe's husband is coaching and

3:00:07 > 3:00:10involved with Mo's new career on the roads, how are things going? What is

3:00:10 > 3:00:15the word inside the camp?

3:00:15 > 3:00:20I think training has gone well. He is in good shape. I know that he

3:00:20 > 3:00:22doesn't particularly enjoy running in cold conditions. Today was

3:00:22 > 3:00:27probably about getting the job done. He now has got another hard block of

3:00:27 > 3:00:31training to knuckle down to and he needs to get back working on that

3:00:31 > 3:00:37one.Was he secretly hoping that would be called off because of the

3:00:37 > 3:00:42snow?No. It is part of the build-up plan. Especially when you have flung

3:00:42 > 3:00:46back from Ethiopia to take part. That was slightly facetious. What

3:00:46 > 3:00:53busy finding lifelike? I did some television with at the end of last

3:00:53 > 3:00:59season. The producers have -- said, he has retired, hasn't he? And I

3:00:59 > 3:01:05said, no, think it will be more in terms of milage when he trains. How

3:01:05 > 3:01:10does it work now, his new life?It is working different systems. I

3:01:10 > 3:01:15think he kind of got a little bit of a shop in 2014 when he tried the

3:01:15 > 3:01:19London Marathon. He knew there were certain changes he needed to make.

3:01:19 > 3:01:22He accepted the training would be difficult and he wanted to take that

3:01:22 > 3:01:25challenge on. He's really happy with how he has adapted and how things

3:01:25 > 3:01:29have moved on in the last couple of months. I know he is really excited

3:01:29 > 3:01:32about going on the streets of London. He got a little taste of

3:01:32 > 3:01:35beer with the crowds this morning. It will be a much bigger stage than

3:01:35 > 3:01:41that in April. He wants to be ready. April 22. Anything can happen in the

3:01:41 > 3:01:47next month in this country with the weather. It could be 70 degrees by

3:01:47 > 3:01:54then. Let's stay inside. We have still got a great pole vault

3:01:54 > 3:01:56competition to bring you. Steve

3:01:56 > 3:02:02competition to bring you. Steve Backley.A little look back.

3:02:02 > 3:02:05We saw Kendricks of the United States and the polish volta go

3:02:05 > 3:02:12clear. Renaud Lavillenie has spent less energy than anybody else at

3:02:12 > 3:02:20this point. One height cleared, 5.70. 5.8 five. Very comfortable

3:02:20 > 3:02:26indeed.He means business. Much straighter going towards the 12

3:02:26 > 3:02:32o'clock at the top of the pole.

3:02:33 > 3:02:36o'clock at the top of the pole. Two voltas in them one half hours. Not a

3:02:36 > 3:02:41bad day's work. That may be an important factor because he has not

3:02:41 > 3:02:45spent energy and everybody else has. The business end of this competition

3:02:45 > 3:02:50is about to unfold probably between San Kendricks of the United States

3:02:50 > 3:02:59and Renaud Lavillenie. Can Raphael Holzdeppe join them? 5.90. First

3:02:59 > 3:03:10attempt.Didn't get that right at all.A bit of a mess. At full

3:03:10 > 3:03:21stretch. He fouls.

3:03:21 > 3:03:25stretch. He fouls. Season's best is five metres and 80. So he is in new

3:03:25 > 3:03:28territory and it is showing.

3:03:28 > 3:03:31five metres and 80. So he is in new territory and it is showing.

3:03:31 > 3:03:35You may have heard the British women have been disqualified from the

3:03:35 > 3:03:394x400 medal that they only got because of a disqualification to

3:03:39 > 3:03:43Jamaica. They finished fourth. Jamaica were disqualified. Now

3:03:43 > 3:03:47Britain have been disqualified. We have looked forensically at the

3:03:47 > 3:03:52footage and we can't find anything that would indicate why. We know the

3:03:52 > 3:03:56rule but we can't see anything. It does add a up to 22

3:03:56 > 3:04:02disqualifications in total. All the talk last night was about how many

3:04:02 > 3:04:08there had been for a foot over the line infringement, which is not rule

3:04:08 > 3:04:11163. That is obstruction. I will remember the number in a minute.

3:04:11 > 3:04:17This was only matched by the last time the world in thes were held in

3:04:17 > 3:04:24Birmingham. In the meantime, there have only been one, three, four,

3:04:24 > 3:04:28four. This is by far the worst place, it would seem, are the best

3:04:28 > 3:04:30place, depending on how you want to look at it, for disqualification is.

3:04:30 > 3:04:37Why would that be? I asked some people this morning. I still didn't

3:04:37 > 3:04:40get a very good answer. I was told with regard to the lane

3:04:40 > 3:04:44infringements that there is an area on the track that should be flat but

3:04:44 > 3:04:49it has curveds. I didn't get any more information than that. It

3:04:49 > 3:04:55didn't make sense to me. So don't blame me. That is what I was told.

3:04:55 > 3:05:02Regardless of that, I believe the IAAF will have to do something about

3:05:02 > 3:05:08this. The problem with the lane infractions, this was at an absurd

3:05:08 > 3:05:12level. If you step on the line one time, there are probably shouldn't

3:05:12 > 3:05:16be an infraction because you are not gaining that much of an advantage. I

3:05:16 > 3:05:20understand the rules and I understand if you cut the line you

3:05:20 > 3:05:26gain an advantage. No problem. I understand that. But when it amounts

3:05:26 > 3:05:29to this number of disqualifications and confusion, I think the fans get

3:05:29 > 3:05:36to a point after a while where they have checked out watching the event.

3:05:36 > 3:05:40And they are like, I think I know who won but I'm not quite sure and I

3:05:40 > 3:05:45just watched the race. That is no fun for the fans.It spoils the

3:05:45 > 3:05:48enjoyment, it's confusing and it is just no fun. Athletes don't

3:05:48 > 3:05:53deliberately try to bend the rules in that way on the track. I don't

3:05:53 > 3:06:00know if you remember in 95, you were there in Gothenberg, that one

3:06:00 > 3:06:08outdoor competition that I remember competing in heptathlon, there were

3:06:08 > 3:06:1155 disqualifications of various orders in that won championships.

3:06:11 > 3:06:20Gwen Torrence. Maria Bartolo. It does happen. -- Maria Metella. It

3:06:20 > 3:06:26has been bad here as well.It is a Catch-22. You have to enforce the

3:06:26 > 3:06:28rules, otherwise there are athletes who will try to take advantage of

3:06:28 > 3:06:32that. But you have to make sure that it works in the best way for the

3:06:32 > 3:06:38sport as well. There are two issues. We are talking about the lane

3:06:38 > 3:06:43infringementss and the jostling and the bumping and barging. They are

3:06:43 > 3:06:45the main reasons. Bumping and barging as part of the indoor

3:06:45 > 3:06:46racing.

3:06:46 > 3:06:46barging as part of the indoor racing.

3:06:46 > 3:06:53Thank you. San Kendricks about to go. We will return to this.

3:06:53 > 3:06:59This could be a critical job. Five metres and 90. Second place at the

3:06:59 > 3:07:08moment. First attempt. Not today. Kendricks unable to go clear. We

3:07:08 > 3:07:13have had five athletes attempt this new height already. Five failures.

3:07:13 > 3:07:21Only Renaud Lavillenie left to try. He may have just got the Brighton

3:07:21 > 3:07:29wrong place. Just goes through the bar. You can move the bar back and

3:07:29 > 3:07:35forth. 80 centimetres back and 40 centimetres forward. You may catch a

3:07:35 > 3:07:39glimpse of another clock out there with a red frame on it which is got

3:07:39 > 3:07:45the numbers on it. That indicates worthy competitors the bar.

3:07:45 > 3:07:49Kendricks does have good memories of competing on British soil. Champion

3:07:49 > 3:07:56last summer in London. As does this man, champion in the Olympics in

3:07:56 > 3:08:062010. Renaud Lavillenie, a perfect card. And he knows because of the

3:08:06 > 3:08:10faileds of his competitors, if he goes clear at this height, this

3:08:10 > 3:08:23could be a gold medal winning jump. Two jumps, Mata clearances. He is in

3:08:23 > 3:08:33first place anyway. This to extend his lead and possibly extend it.

3:08:35 > 3:08:42Great speed on the runway. I want to see that a second time. He was great

3:08:42 > 3:08:48over 5.80 five. You want to see what the differences between the two.He

3:08:48 > 3:08:52seemed to be in the band for a long time. I don't know if his pole is

3:08:52 > 3:08:58soft. It seems for a fraction of a second it didn't catapult him up.He

3:08:58 > 3:09:07may need to change poles. Get a stiffer pole. It will uncoil

3:09:07 > 3:09:10quicker. Obviously you have got to run fast and put the energy in as

3:09:10 > 3:09:19well.He is so meticulous in his methods, Renaud Lavillenie. So we

3:09:19 > 3:09:33have still got six athletes. The young man, a manual chorale is

3:09:33 > 3:09:39looking for silence. -- Emmanouil Karalis. This is his last attempt.

3:09:39 > 3:09:44Three consecutives and you out. This is that moment for the youngster. He

3:09:44 > 3:09:48asked for silence and he has got it. Now he wants the crowd to join in.

3:09:48 > 3:09:56He is in control.I think so. Every athlete goes through their own

3:09:56 > 3:09:59little rituals as to what they want and how they compose themselves and

3:09:59 > 3:10:06get their mind ready before they compete.

3:10:07 > 3:10:11compete.This for a new world junior record. A big ask for the young man

3:10:11 > 3:10:18from Greece. That was a good jump. It was. He didn't get the pole away

3:10:18 > 3:10:21early enough. It was low on his right hand in terms of planting.

3:10:21 > 3:10:26That way you go underneath the pole and you don't get the energy to

3:10:26 > 3:10:33penetrate. Great attempt.Fifth in the world Championships at 18 years

3:10:33 > 3:10:42of age is pretty impressive in itself. Looking down the card,

3:10:42 > 3:10:46noughts and crosses across the screen, Renaud Lavillenie out in

3:10:46 > 3:10:57front. 5.8 five. Still no unclear at this height. Emmanouil Karalis

3:10:57 > 3:11:00appreciative of the support. I look forward to seeing how his career

3:11:00 > 3:11:08progresses. A big prospect.

3:11:11 > 3:11:14This pole competition, as thrilling as it is, unfortunately means we

3:11:14 > 3:11:21will not get the medal ceremony for Andy Pozzi's gold. As soon as we go

3:11:21 > 3:11:25off air, we will have the rest of the pole vault and the ceremony on

3:11:25 > 3:11:29the BBC's website. You will be able to see it. We have a couple of

3:11:29 > 3:11:34minutes left. 25 hours of live coverage of these World Athletics

3:11:34 > 3:11:40Championships. I guess highlights is the final thoughts, Michael?For me,

3:11:40 > 3:11:43oddly enough for these championships, one of the first

3:11:43 > 3:11:47where I can remember at all of the field events. They were extremely

3:11:47 > 3:11:51competitive. As in the pole vaulter which we are seeing right now. Very

3:11:51 > 3:11:56competitive in the high jump. Right through with the triple jump

3:11:56 > 3:12:03yesterday. It has been great, the field events. The quality of the

3:12:03 > 3:12:08competition but also the competition.

3:12:08 > 3:12:11competition.We want to tie competitions where the leads are

3:12:11 > 3:12:15changing every time. The field events have delivered. It has been

3:12:15 > 3:12:19fantastic to watch. I think Britain have stepped up massively. I am

3:12:19 > 3:12:23pleased with the medal haul. I think I said we would be light on the

3:12:23 > 3:12:27ground but they have been fantastic. The fact that certain individuals

3:12:27 > 3:12:35knocking on the door, Laura Muir etc, have pushed themselves through?

3:12:35 > 3:12:38Yes, this time they have delivered and they have delivered in a big

3:12:38 > 3:12:46way. Laura Muir and cagey tea have really done that. So special to see

3:12:46 > 3:12:54Laura come through. And your city of Birmingham has done you proud,

3:12:54 > 3:12:57Denise. Like the rest of the country we have had some terrible weather

3:12:57 > 3:13:01here in the last few days but the crowds have enjoyed this? They have

3:13:01 > 3:13:07battled through the snow, the slides and the awful conditions to be here.

3:13:07 > 3:13:13Athletics is a very popular sport in this city. We have our trials. This

3:13:13 > 3:13:15is another reflection of what for me has been a really good

3:13:15 > 3:13:20Championships.Michael, you are coming back with us for the

3:13:20 > 3:13:25Commonwealth Games.I look forward to it.We are doing that in Salford.

3:13:25 > 3:13:29Don't be getting a plane to Australia. I would have been gone!

3:13:29 > 3:13:34Thanks so much. And to the production team, who make all of

3:13:34 > 3:13:41these things so successful. We leave you with images and memories of a

3:13:41 > 3:13:43great British icon, Sir Roger Bannister.

3:13:43 > 3:13:48From all of us, good night. -- goodbye.Well, I remember it very

3:13:48 > 3:13:55well. The main problem was that the weather was so bad. What I was told

3:13:55 > 3:14:01by Mike coach in the morning, he said, "I think you can run a 3.56,

3:14:01 > 3:14:06and if you don't think -- take this opportunity when it is presented,

3:14:06 > 3:14:08for the rest of your life you may never forgive yourself.

3:14:08 > 3:14:14"

3:14:15 > 3:14:29When I overtook Chris chat away, I began to feel the pain.

3:14:29 > 3:14:36I collapsed as I crossed the tape. But then I recovered sufficiently to

3:14:36 > 3:14:41hear him announcing... Ladies and gentlemen, here is the

3:14:41 > 3:14:48result. R G Bannister.Subject to

3:14:48 > 3:14:52ratification would be a new world record, three... And after that the

3:14:52 > 3:14:57noise of the crowd blizzard -- obliterated the remainder of his

3:14:57 > 3:14:59announcement.
