:00:35. > :00:40.Hello there and welcome to our coverage of the Australian Open, the

:00:41. > :00:46.first Grand Slam of the year. Coming up on the programme for you today,

:00:47. > :00:49.we'll be taking a look at how the British number one Johanna Konta

:00:50. > :00:52.gets on in her third round match against the former world number one

:00:53. > :00:55.Caroline Wozniacki. Konta reached the semifinals in Melbourne last

:00:56. > :01:01.year, the first British woman to go that far up to Grand Slam in 33

:01:02. > :01:06.years. Can she match those heroics this time around? Maybe even go one

:01:07. > :01:09.better. What a story that would be. In this year's Australian Open, it's

:01:10. > :01:18.already seen its fair share of drama. The biggest story of week

:01:19. > :01:22.one, the early exit of six times champion Novak Djokovic. The number

:01:23. > :01:27.two seed was beaten in the second round by Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin,

:01:28. > :01:31.ranked 117 in the world, so no seventh title for the defending

:01:32. > :01:36.champion. He played obviously above his level, but you have to give him

:01:37. > :01:43.credit for that. Many things came together for him today and he's a

:01:44. > :01:46.well-deserved winner. In the women's draw, the highest profile casualties

:01:47. > :01:53.so far is Radwanska, the number three seed was beaten by Croatia's

:01:54. > :02:00.Lucic-Baroni in round two. The number four seed fell, Simona Halep

:02:01. > :02:05.lost to American Shelby Rogers. Britain's Heather Watson set up a

:02:06. > :02:09.two ink encounter with Jennifer Brady but surrendered five match

:02:10. > :02:15.points as she succumbed to the American 10-8 in the deciding set.

:02:16. > :02:17.Fellow Briton Dan Evans' story has been altogether different. First he

:02:18. > :02:23.beat former US Open champion and number seven seed Croatian Marin

:02:24. > :02:29.Cilic in round two, then he followed that with a victory over home hero

:02:30. > :02:32.Bernard Tomic to reach his first ever Grand Slam fourth-round match

:02:33. > :02:38.against France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Winning those matches is special,

:02:39. > :02:42.especially against Bernado in his own country, the great atmosphere,

:02:43. > :02:47.the crowd were against me and the pinnacle in sport, to come through

:02:48. > :02:54.when they against you. It was great. Five times runner-up Andy Murray has

:02:55. > :03:04.eased into round four and a meeting with a German. He had yet to drop a

:03:05. > :03:10.set in the dangerous quest for a first title. Hopefully I'll keep

:03:11. > :03:14.getting better. Those are the big stories already from down under and

:03:15. > :03:18.you can watch Andy Murray are against Zverev and Dan Evans against

:03:19. > :03:22.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga tomorrow afternoon from 5:50pm on BBC Two,

:03:23. > :03:28.and listen to the commentary on Radio Five Live sports extra. Could

:03:29. > :03:31.you on a con to join her compatriots in round four? She's had a pretty

:03:32. > :03:40.straightforward run so far, straight sets win against Kirsten Flipkens of

:03:41. > :03:46.Belgian, then the promising teenager Naomi Osaka of Japan, 6-4, 6-2 as

:03:47. > :03:50.well. Let's see how Johanna Konta can get on against the former world

:03:51. > :03:51.number one Caroline Wozniacki. I'll hand you over to our commentary

:03:52. > :04:36.team. COMMENTATOR:

:04:37. > :04:44.Wozniacki missing her first two first served. Serving at 71% on the

:04:45. > :05:05.matchups so far. Six aces, six at double fault.

:05:06. > :05:11.She said she wasn't really happy with how she finished the match,

:05:12. > :05:15.said she lost some intensity down the stretch. I didn't think you and

:05:16. > :06:19.I really felt that. Too. She just Repcik right over the

:06:20. > :06:23.sign on the net. Konta is doing a good job, early in this match, of

:06:24. > :06:27.opening up the court and on that occasion hitting it to the Wozniacki

:06:28. > :06:33.backhand until she felt she had the want up the line for the winner.

:06:34. > :06:42.Break point. A free point for Wozniacki.

:06:43. > :06:45.Has saved eight, now nine, of 11 break chances in the week,

:06:46. > :06:58.Wozniacki. She doesn't have the biggest serve

:06:59. > :07:03.in the world, Wozniacki, but what she does do very well is to vary the

:07:04. > :07:08.pace and direction of the Serbs forced upon that particular

:07:09. > :07:10.occasion, just 150 kilometres an hour, not a huge serve but right on

:07:11. > :07:47.the line. She's looked for it a couple of

:07:48. > :07:51.times, very aggressive from Konta. Back to deuce. She's picking on the

:07:52. > :07:55.Wozniacki forehand side and that's the side that Wozniacki have a

:07:56. > :08:00.harder time creating pace off. She defends very well off that side and

:08:01. > :08:03.Konta knows that she's going to get an opportunity, that could be the

:08:04. > :08:32.wing where the opportunities going to come from.

:08:33. > :08:42.A difficult opening hold for Wozniacki. Being the opener, went

:08:43. > :08:48.for it. She does have those matchups, she's worked with Kim

:08:49. > :08:51.Clijsters, he's got some of those matchups against Wozniacki so his

:08:52. > :08:54.scalp might be a bit more complete than Peter Wozniacki, just because

:08:55. > :08:58.of the fact they've been in some actions with Wozniacki over the

:08:59. > :09:04.years. Yes, you find that with good coaches, that they really have a

:09:05. > :09:08.tremendous way of imparting knowledge to whoever it is they are

:09:09. > :09:13.working with and he's been on the women's to for a long time now.

:09:14. > :09:16.Understands how it works, which is very different to the way men's

:09:17. > :10:22.tennis works. Quarterfinals or better at nine of

:10:23. > :10:27.the event that she played in 2016, Johanna Konta. The first title she

:10:28. > :10:29.won Win Stanford, where she beat Venus Williams, one of the lead up

:10:30. > :10:58.tournament modes to the US Open. And she does as well a great job of

:10:59. > :11:03.varying her serve as well, really good about placing it well, mixing

:11:04. > :11:08.up her serve quite a bit. Is a little bit more on it than

:11:09. > :11:34.Wozniacki, so she has it in her Arsenal also, but yes, good variety.

:11:35. > :11:42.This is Konta's fourth Australian Open. On two previous occasions she

:11:43. > :11:46.didn't qualify. In the first time was last year, where she got to the

:11:47. > :11:54.semis. So really only her second main draw Australian Open. Not bad,

:11:55. > :11:57.to have a 7-1 record going into this one. Losing to Angelique Kerber last

:11:58. > :12:35.year, who took the title. Just seeing early in the match risk

:12:36. > :12:41.and reward between these two. Konta is going to go for a lot more here.

:12:42. > :12:45.Yes, shot selection is going to be important for Konta today. Obviously

:12:46. > :12:47.there's no point going for big shots unnecessarily, but when the moment

:12:48. > :13:53.presents itself, she will go for it. She looks sharp, early. That's how

:13:54. > :13:58.you can tell a player's confidence level, whether they are having the

:13:59. > :14:03.ability to hit the ball at the line early in the match. Caroline

:14:04. > :14:04.Wozniacki didn't get anywhere near that ball, that's how well struck it

:14:05. > :14:30.was. We are on serve early, 2-1. In -- in

:14:31. > :14:54.the Margaret Court Arena. UMPIRE: Ladies and gentlemen, please

:14:55. > :15:22.take any seat for now. UMPIRE: Out. Zero hi 15. -- zero -

:15:23. > :15:24.15. It was an overrule from the chair. It wasn't challenged at all

:15:25. > :15:47.by Konta. What we are going to have as the day

:15:48. > :15:50.progresses if shadows on the court and the lines people at this point

:15:51. > :15:55.are in the shade and having to look through the sun. It can be tricky at

:15:56. > :15:58.times. Forget about the lines people, what about the players,

:15:59. > :16:00.having to look through the sun and into the shade. That becomes tricky

:16:01. > :16:40.as well. We'll get to that! It's tricky. That's well done. It

:16:41. > :16:44.wasn't a bad drop shot but she was onto it. Normally a player would

:16:45. > :16:50.either put it at the line, or do another drop shot, but she sees how

:16:51. > :16:52.close Konta is an up and over. It's such a tricky shot honoured dead

:16:53. > :17:25.sprint. Good shot selection. Trying to do a little bit more with

:17:26. > :17:29.that forehand, Caroline Wozniacki, because she knows if she doesn't put

:17:30. > :17:32.a little bit extra on it, then Konta is going to give the next one a

:17:33. > :17:36.pretty good whack. That unforced error a direct result of the

:17:37. > :17:41.pressure that Jo Konta is putting on her. It's been pretty clean so far,

:17:42. > :18:37.47 winners, 27 unforced errors coming into this match, Wozniacki.

:18:38. > :18:48.Konta doesn't have the best hands, but she's very opportunistic and

:18:49. > :18:51.takes her chances at the net. How much court Caroline Wozniacki is

:18:52. > :19:31.having to cover here. Konta using the court exceptionally well.

:19:32. > :19:41.Nice pressure from Wozniacki, the back -- backhand the line, to apply

:19:42. > :19:46.that pressure, to deuce. Wozniacki is tied for second, heading into

:19:47. > :19:52.today's action, making 88% of her returns so far in the week. Such a

:19:53. > :19:54.huge part of Wozniacki's game, making such a high number of

:19:55. > :20:10.returns. Just as I say that, a free point for

:20:11. > :20:12.Konta. That was a good serve, wasn't it? 159 out to the corner and

:20:13. > :21:09.another game point. That was good depths from Wozniacki.

:21:10. > :21:12.2-2. Once again, finding the angle there, Jo Konta, which is the thing

:21:13. > :21:18.that is keeping Wozniacki off balance. It's one side, then the

:21:19. > :21:21.other side, hit the ball to the open court, then look to move forward.

:21:22. > :21:28.The plan is very clear from Konta today.

:21:29. > :21:34.At this point now, two games, two service games apiece, you think

:21:35. > :21:36.they've probably felt each other out a bit now, we might see the game

:21:37. > :21:57.open up just a little bit. Five backhand winners already. And

:21:58. > :22:02.the ones that haven't been winners, from Konta, are really make life

:22:03. > :22:04.difficult for Wozniacki. Generates good pace off that side, good racket

:22:05. > :23:26.head speed, good preparation. That's just too good. Wozniacki is

:23:27. > :23:32.going to be trying to track things down a bit today as Konta gets to

:23:33. > :23:37.15-30. Even this one here you think you have to start from the beginning

:23:38. > :23:41.again, but look how much angle she gets on that one. She was a long way

:23:42. > :23:43.behind the baseline. She didn't hit it deep, but she hit it wide, right

:23:44. > :23:57.near that sideline. Well done. Which is forcing

:23:58. > :24:01.Wozniacki to play shots. Beautiful backhand. That's possibly the best

:24:02. > :24:33.tool in her arsenal, that backhand up the line.

:24:34. > :24:39.I can sense right now Wozniacki are feeling an urgency to get that

:24:40. > :24:41.depths and change the pace a little bit, to keep Konta back and behind

:24:42. > :25:04.the baseline. It went wide. Its 3-2, on serve, in

:25:05. > :25:21.the first. That's our location, the beautiful

:25:22. > :25:24.city of Melbourne, the MCG in the background, we are in the

:25:25. > :25:31.foreground, the Margaret Court Arena, the reddish coloured roof

:25:32. > :25:38.behind Rob Leiva arena. Behind that the Hisense Arena. Ten or 12 minute

:25:39. > :25:39.walk the city. UMPIRE: Take your seats quickly,

:25:40. > :26:05.thank you. You mentioned Konta was born in

:26:06. > :26:09.Sydney. She's been a British citizens since 2012. Sick she said

:26:10. > :26:13.she didn't feel any special emotions after winning their last week except

:26:14. > :26:45.she got to meet her niece. That's nice. A nice moment for her.

:26:46. > :27:09.It's the first of the day, the first of what you'd expect to be many. She

:27:10. > :27:20.was fourth on tour last year in ace count. 11 now in the week.

:27:21. > :27:33.That's interesting. Wozniacki has challenged this but I think the ball

:27:34. > :27:39.was in. If you asked people who had the fourth best serve on tour, you

:27:40. > :27:43.may not necessarily say Jo Konta. We see two aces in a row, it just goes

:27:44. > :27:44.to show you it's not all about the power will stop its about variety

:27:45. > :28:18.and placement also. That's tough. The you don't have to

:28:19. > :28:23.take that one in the air. Wozniacki is a long way behind the baseline.

:28:24. > :28:29.She has to guess either way anyway, why not look to bounce, take your

:28:30. > :28:35.time and hit it? It was a tough overhead. The ball was a long way up

:28:36. > :29:23.there. Hit a long way up the grip as well.

:29:24. > :29:34.Good defensive work from Wozniacki, charging that forehand up the line.

:29:35. > :29:52.Well handled by Wozniacki come from 40-0 and an overhead, to 40-30.

:29:53. > :30:05.Her third ace. She gets it to 3-3. I went back and checked in terms of

:30:06. > :30:09.serve speed, she was about 30-35 in the tournament in terms of fastest

:30:10. > :30:13.serve, so it goes to your point, it's not about the pace, it's about

:30:14. > :30:17.the placement very often for Konta. And the variety and having all the

:30:18. > :30:22.serves in your arsenal, and being able to execute them when needed.

:30:23. > :30:24.Obviously you've got certain serves that are more favourite than others,

:30:25. > :30:28.but you have to be able to hit down the middle, at the body, and wide,

:30:29. > :30:40.on both sides. The forehand coming up once again

:30:41. > :31:10.short. She's got good depth and pace going

:31:11. > :32:28.into the body with these returns. Two straight backhands. About the

:32:29. > :32:34.exact same. Both missing about a foot-and-a-half wide. Low forehands

:32:35. > :32:36.from Wozniacki. Changing the depth on it, so Konta is having to move

:32:37. > :33:17.forward into that. The shot before the one she hit the

:33:18. > :33:22.winner of was down the middle, to Wozniacki's whose forehand is with a

:33:23. > :33:27.little less pace. So Wozniacki, she struggles when she has to make pace

:33:28. > :33:29.on the forehand side. The second chance of the day for the

:33:30. > :33:56.Brit. It's always good for Wozniacki when

:33:57. > :34:02.she's able to get Konta to move from side to side to get it to deuce.

:34:03. > :34:08.Once again the off-pace shot to the Wozniacki forehand side, most girls

:34:09. > :34:12.on the tour would cream that forehand, mid-court. It is probably

:34:13. > :34:17.one of the reasons that Wozniacki has not won a major. She has a hard

:34:18. > :34:32.time hitting winners off that forehand side.

:34:33. > :34:44.Wozniacki, left guessing. Another great chance for Konta.

:34:45. > :34:49.Once again it's that, it's almost like there's a target on Wozniacki's

:34:50. > :35:09.right hip when Konta is able to go after those returns.

:35:10. > :35:17.There it was again, Liz. Developed it this time into a break.

:35:18. > :35:32.Konta takes the lead. The shadows are starting to creep on

:35:33. > :35:37.to the court. They probably will be on the court within the next 10 or

:35:38. > :35:40.15 minutes by the end of this set. Then we'll start to have fun with

:35:41. > :35:44.that. If year looking at huge serves

:35:45. > :35:50.coming from shade to sun or sun to shade, it's a little bit different.

:35:51. > :35:56.These girls neither have huge serves but it is an adjustment that needs

:35:57. > :36:02.to be made. It's a triple knot she goes with

:36:03. > :36:03.there! You want to be sure it doesn't come undone! Konta serving

:36:04. > :36:33.with new balls. It certainly is a unique service

:36:34. > :36:36.motion, isn't it? The deliberate ball toss.

:36:37. > :36:41.The preparation before is the most unique part about the serve. The

:36:42. > :36:43.ball bouncing. She spins the ball, you see there before she bounces it

:36:44. > :37:19.each time. Good position. Wozniacki had so many

:37:20. > :37:23.options. Once again, because the ball hit the net it slowed down

:37:24. > :37:29.dramatically, and that's the ball. That is exactly the ball that

:37:30. > :37:31.Wozniacki has trouble generating pace on. That's why she went for the

:37:32. > :38:04.lob. Picking on that wide forehand,

:38:05. > :38:07.Wozniacki, wasn't she? The third point was the same, out wide to the

:38:08. > :38:36.forehand side. The serve percentage has dropped

:38:37. > :38:41.somewhat for Konta. It has not bothered her but

:38:42. > :38:46.something to be aware of for her first double.

:38:47. > :38:56.But when she gets a serve in, she is winning over 80% of those points.

:38:57. > :39:02.Yikes! Konta. . The serve went to the forehand,

:39:03. > :39:07.the next ball went to the forehand. And then it gets in your head.

:39:08. > :39:10.These girls haven't played each other before but they know their

:39:11. > :39:56.strengths and weaknesses. A tough ball. Didn't really adjust

:39:57. > :40:04.too well. No. It just went up. Probably a

:40:05. > :40:05.little bit of wind. And maybe some adjustments with the feet, maybe

:40:06. > :40:33.tried to do too much with it. I feel like we are broken records up

:40:34. > :41:21.here. . She

:41:22. > :41:28.Don't expect Caroline Wozniacki to go anywhere. She will mentally stay

:41:29. > :41:29.with this much the whole way. There's no giving up in her

:41:30. > :41:52.vocabulary. That's another option, any time she

:41:53. > :41:53.gets the short ball and move forward. Wozniacki certainly has the

:41:54. > :42:27.hands to do it. Oh, she was lucky to get away with

:42:28. > :42:31.that, wasn't she, Jo Konta? She almost got caught. Her first

:42:32. > :42:35.instinct was to hit it in the air, then she thought maybe I'm not going

:42:36. > :42:39.to get there, then she did, but it was awkward. She almost didn't make

:42:40. > :42:41.contact with it. Great racket work to actually get that ball across

:42:42. > :43:04.court. And a set point. Four straight games for Johanna

:43:05. > :43:12.Konta, to close out the first set 6-3, and she will serve to start the

:43:13. > :43:14.second. You can just see how clearly Jo Konta has come out with a game

:43:15. > :45:11.plan and absolutely stuck to it. She had to go for that ball up the

:45:12. > :45:15.line, didn't she? Being pulled so far wide, Wozniacki. Just reacting

:45:16. > :45:17.right now. The ball doesn't have the depth from her racket, so Konta is

:45:18. > :46:15.able to just dictate play. Frustration, evidence here for

:46:16. > :46:24.Wozniacki. Well, she's being made to play a way

:46:25. > :46:26.she doesn't want to play. She was very -- it was very smart on her

:46:27. > :46:45.Ont's behalf. -- opponent's behalf.

:46:46. > :46:56.Five games on the trot now for Konta.

:46:57. > :47:03.It's a tough spot here for Caroline Wozniacki.

:47:04. > :47:09.It's been broken twice in a row here. The forehand is getting picked

:47:10. > :47:13.apart. You don't hear her talking to

:47:14. > :47:17.herself too often but she was after that last couple of points.

:47:18. > :47:24.It's frustrating for her. Now we've talked about it, she's been number

:47:25. > :47:31.one in the world. She's been to two Grand Slam finals in the US Open in

:47:32. > :47:36.2009 and again in 2014, losing on that occasion to Serena. This is the

:47:37. > :47:39.problem when playing against the girls that really can do damage, and

:47:40. > :47:44.she has a hard time on that one wing.

:47:45. > :47:50.She was four and three here last year in the top ten, and 59 in her

:47:51. > :48:09.career. She serves here 0-1. I haven't seen that too often. The

:48:10. > :48:13.short ball from Konta, and Wozniacki being able to take advantage of it

:48:14. > :48:19.on the backhand side and move forward. She has three of three in

:48:20. > :48:24.her net points. That number's probably going to have to be higher

:48:25. > :48:31.here. To that to happen, Konta has to hit

:48:32. > :49:01.the ball short. And there's no signs of that yet.

:49:02. > :49:08.It's her first double fault of the day.

:49:09. > :49:15.Seventh of the tournament, and more trouble for Wozniacki on her serve.

:49:16. > :49:38.And that is a huge statistic, isn't it?

:49:39. > :49:41.And great chances once again for the Brit! And once again, great depth on

:49:42. > :52:32.the receive from Konta on the return.

:52:33. > :52:42.That double fault at 40-0, her second of the day. A bit of a bigger

:52:43. > :53:22.second, 158. Seven straight games, going for her

:53:23. > :53:25.eighth straight win. Konta, 3-0, in the second.

:53:26. > :53:50.UMPIRE: Time. Caroline just pointing to her head,

:53:51. > :53:53.as if to say, maybe I'm not thinking, maybe I need to think a

:53:54. > :53:58.little better, just having a little conversation with her father, who is

:53:59. > :54:01.down that end of the court. I'd say it's more of a monologue. At least,

:54:02. > :54:32.it's supposed to be. 0- three. Just spinning that second serves

:54:33. > :54:33.right into the middle of the court, not wanting to take a chance there

:54:34. > :54:47.and punished once again. It's a helpless free feeling, out on

:54:48. > :55:19.court, sometimes. When you are being outplayed like this, it is.

:55:20. > :55:38.Second return winner of the set, for Konta.

:55:39. > :55:56.1-2 from Wozniacki, a little bit more on that serve, well-placed.

:55:57. > :56:08.Break chances again. Three of five on the day Tom is Konta. -- three,

:56:09. > :57:06.of five on the day, is Konta. Unreal. Eight straight games. Four

:57:07. > :57:10.straight breaks. All for Konta. It doesn't look like that dip is going

:57:11. > :57:19.to come. For Caroline Wozniacki, to be able to force her way back into

:57:20. > :57:23.this match. Jo Konta, first serve points won, 82% of the deuce court

:57:24. > :57:37.and 86 on the second court. Phenomenal numbers.

:57:38. > :57:50.I don't think we need a dip... This is one of the few points that Konta

:57:51. > :57:54.hasn't won when she's been in a position where she can hit that

:57:55. > :58:36.swinging volley. Good anticipation from Caroline Wozniacki.

:58:37. > :58:43.Once again, the swinging volley. Really doing a good job there,

:58:44. > :59:10.opening up the court to expose that forehand side.

:59:11. > :59:18.For fourth today, first of the set. -- the fourth, of today, the first

:59:19. > :00:16.of the set. It's not often you speechless, but I

:00:17. > :00:19.feel you are speechless today. I'm enjoying the show that your current

:00:20. > :00:22.-- Johanna Konta is putting on. There have been very few times when

:00:23. > :00:35.she has been out of position in this whole match.

:00:36. > :00:45.A challenge here from Wozniacki. Was there a call? There was a call. I

:00:46. > :00:50.didn't hear the call initially, but I did see the lines person sticking

:00:51. > :01:14.out his arm. No challenge here, second serve coming.

:01:15. > :01:24.Oh, she missed it. It's about the first one she is missed. Had created

:01:25. > :01:29.the opening there, Konta, by once again hitting right to leave

:01:30. > :01:34.Wozniacki forehand. All Caroline could do was throw it up. You

:01:35. > :01:39.mentioned it earlier, maybe let it bounce. It's always that stress you

:01:40. > :01:42.feel with Wozniacki, that foot speed.

:01:43. > :01:46.UMPIRE: Quiet during the rally, thank you. That was a high swinging

:01:47. > :01:55.volley, as compared to a high lob that just comes straight down at

:01:56. > :02:01.you. There is the ace. UMPIRE: Wozniacki is challenging the

:02:02. > :02:04.call on the right service line. The ball was called in. May be a hopeful

:02:05. > :02:37.challenge. Just an incredible and dominant

:02:38. > :02:44.performance from Jo Konta. 6-3, 5-0. UMPIRE: Wozniacki has two challenges

:02:45. > :02:47.remaining. We talked about Konta coming into the Australian Open and

:02:48. > :02:49.winning in Sydney, beating Radwanska. She outplayed everyone,

:02:50. > :03:08.just like this. UMPIRE: Take your seats quickly

:03:09. > :03:30.please, thank you. Time. UMPIRE: Thank you, ladies and

:03:31. > :03:54.gentlemen. Oh, my. Love - 15, not good enough,

:03:55. > :03:59.that serve, not when you are serving against someone like Jo Konta, with

:04:00. > :04:32.returning. It's flat, straight up the line. Played perfectly.

:04:33. > :04:43.Johanna Konta is a train today. Your bobbin we will hear what she has to

:04:44. > :04:45.say when it finishes. Sometimes you are so focused you are not away

:04:46. > :04:54.while playing an almost perfect match. It's like when Istomin said

:04:55. > :04:58.the other day, he felt sorry for Djokovic because of how well he was

:04:59. > :05:15.playing. I think Konta might say the same thing today.

:05:16. > :05:22.This is not a first round match against someone racked 150 in the

:05:23. > :05:26.world. Jo Konta is playing against a former number one player in the

:05:27. > :05:32.world. This is a quality opponent that she is being made to look very

:05:33. > :05:35.mediocre. Three in six against players that have been ranked at

:05:36. > :05:43.number one in their career, coming into this match, Konta.

:05:44. > :06:03.Clearly looking like she will make it four in six.

:06:04. > :06:13.APPLAUSE It's been a long time since Caroline

:06:14. > :06:20.Wozniacki has got game point, but she has won here. -- she has a game

:06:21. > :06:40.point here. She hasn't had one in this set.

:06:41. > :06:46.The last time she had a game point was when she converted her service

:06:47. > :06:54.game... INAUDIBLE

:06:55. > :07:04.A lifetime ago. A good hold that, from Wozniacki, I have to say. But

:07:05. > :07:37.it's Konta, serving, for a spot in the 16.

:07:38. > :07:45.That's good, on the line from Konta, even under pressure. Being able to

:07:46. > :07:53.produce the goods there. Wozniacki was on the charge. Not panicking,

:07:54. > :08:03.Konta. Why panic, with a 5-1 lead? No, absolutely.

:08:04. > :08:39.It's a risk you. -- miscue. You can count on one hand the amount of

:08:40. > :08:43.shots we've seen like that from Jo Konta today. The unforced errors

:08:44. > :08:56.have been from a show of aggression, not so much with that one.

:08:57. > :09:46.A glimpse. Again, without a great chance on the day.

:09:47. > :09:55.A challenge from Konta. This might be your dip.

:09:56. > :10:01.UMPIRE: The ball was called out. I was having a close look at this ball

:10:02. > :10:13.as well. What the review says. Is it good? Yes, it is. Wow.

:10:14. > :10:18.When things aren't going your way, they just don't go your way, do

:10:19. > :10:41.they? APPLAUSE

:10:42. > :10:46.Dejected shoulders from Wozniacki. She knows that might be her one

:10:47. > :10:50.glimpse. That was a huge point, 15-30. I think these opportunities

:10:51. > :12:10.are going to be few and far between. Just inches, maybe trying to finish

:12:11. > :12:14.this match off fraction quickly, taking her time and doing the right

:12:15. > :12:16.thing and going back for the towel. That was her third double of the

:12:17. > :12:43.day. A mis-hit forehand from Wozniacki,

:12:44. > :12:49.throws up her hands in disgust. Another match point for Konta. This

:12:50. > :12:55.is a situation we talked about it earlier, where Konta is serving from

:12:56. > :12:56.shadow to light here. It's tough for Wozniacki, looking up at the roof,

:12:57. > :13:22.before this point. It's wide. An absolute masterclass

:13:23. > :13:26.from Johanna Konta. 6-3, 6-1, over Caroline Wozniacki, moving back into

:13:27. > :13:33.the round of 16 here at the Australian Open. We see Jo Konta

:13:34. > :13:37.acknowledged the crowd. That certainly wasn't a scoreline that I

:13:38. > :13:40.was predicting before this match. Full credit to that lady on the

:13:41. > :13:46.screen. What a wonderful performance.

:13:47. > :13:53.STUDIO: Konta looking very impressive, but

:13:54. > :13:57.next is the Russian Ekaterina Makarova, after she came through in

:13:58. > :14:01.three sets against Dominica Cibulkova, a finalist in Melbourne

:14:02. > :14:05.three years ago but she's heading home early this time round. Makarova

:14:06. > :14:15.lines up against Konta. Let's look at the rest of the draw. Pliskova

:14:16. > :14:16.came through 10-8 in a deciding set. Gavrilova Rizal at Aussie standing

:14:17. > :14:32.in the singles. Brady beat Heather Watson from

:14:33. > :14:37.Britain. She hadn't won an Australian Open match since 1998,

:14:38. > :14:41.now she has one Vekic in a row. Barbora Strycova squares up to six

:14:42. > :14:45.times champion Serena Williams, who is on for the open era record, 23rd

:14:46. > :14:50.Grand Slam title. If she comes through that one, Serena is on

:14:51. > :14:55.course for a quarterfinal matchup with Johanna Konta, but Konta isn't

:14:56. > :14:56.looking that far ahead, she says. Here she is talking to Russell

:14:57. > :14:58.looking that far ahead, she says. Here she is talking to Russell

:14:59. > :15:03.Fuller. I thought that was your best

:15:04. > :15:07.performance of the week by some margin. How pleased with you, the

:15:08. > :15:10.way you played? I'm very happy with the level I was mainly able to

:15:11. > :15:15.maintain. Throughout that much. From the get go, I knew that she was not

:15:16. > :15:19.going to give it to make. Caroline is the kind of player who will make

:15:20. > :15:25.her opponents earn any point they win against her. I knew that, and I

:15:26. > :15:29.felt I committed to the way I wanted to play and I had trust in that,

:15:30. > :15:33.even if it sometimes wasn't going to work, that it was going to bring the

:15:34. > :15:37.opportunities and I'm happy it did today. You were very aggressive from

:15:38. > :15:40.the very first ball. Do you think you hit the ball significantly

:15:41. > :15:44.harder than you did say this time last year? I don't know. I think

:15:45. > :15:49.you'll need to refer to stats for that one. But I think my intention

:15:50. > :15:55.was clear today. Because of that, I was able to just be very clinical

:15:56. > :15:59.and clear on how I wanted to play, therefore I didn't get too lost in

:16:00. > :16:03.between thoughts, or in between decision-making. I think things got

:16:04. > :16:09.simplified for me today and I just enjoyed trying to execute the plan

:16:10. > :16:13.and really enjoyed being out there. It was a really nice atmosphere on

:16:14. > :16:17.court today. There was a lot of people, a lot of support, so I

:16:18. > :16:20.enjoyed the whole thing. Is there an extra buzz when you are playing

:16:21. > :16:24.someone like Caroline Wozniacki? Because of what she has achieved in

:16:25. > :16:28.her career, and also because she's very popular, wherever she goes in

:16:29. > :16:32.tennis? Yes, she's been at the top of the game for as long as I can

:16:33. > :16:36.remember. I cannot remember a time when she wasn't. I was really

:16:37. > :16:40.looking forward to playing her. I've never played her before. She's a

:16:41. > :16:46.former world number one. I don't know how money titles as she's won

:16:47. > :16:49.and finals, so was looking forward to the challenge and I was happy I

:16:50. > :16:53.was able to execute the things I wanted to do out there today. It's

:16:54. > :16:57.funny how the draw has worked out. You will now play Makarova in the

:16:58. > :17:02.fourth round, just as you did here last year. What are your memories of

:17:03. > :17:07.that match, which went on and on and on? Yes, every time we'd played

:17:08. > :17:11.before that and after that it's been close matches, so I expect nothing

:17:12. > :17:16.different tomorrow. She's playing a great level. She had a great win

:17:17. > :17:19.today. I'm looking forward to the challenge. Whatever difficulties

:17:20. > :17:25.will come, I'm looking forward to facing them. Who knows, we might be

:17:26. > :17:30.on the same court. Yes, one match at a time, they always say and we'll

:17:31. > :17:35.have highlights of that last 16 tie against Katarina Makarova on BBC Two

:17:36. > :17:43.for you from 4045 B. The men's draw lost one of its biggest stars in the

:17:44. > :17:47.first week, Djokovic packing bags. It's a welcome return for two of the

:17:48. > :17:51.game's giants, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer are both back from injury.

:17:52. > :17:59.Nadal is due to the last 16 after a gritty fightback to beat rising star

:18:00. > :18:04.Alexander Zverev in just over four hours. Nadal held his nerve to the

:18:05. > :18:08.off the German teenager 6-2 win the final set. After he claimed the

:18:09. > :18:13.scalp of Djokovic, Denis Istomin is still on the march, this time the

:18:14. > :18:18.wildcard from Uzbekistan beat the 30th seed Pablo Carreno buster 6-2

:18:19. > :18:22.in the deciding set. Also through to the fourth round is Gael Monfils,

:18:23. > :18:25.the flamboyant Frenchman beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight

:18:26. > :18:31.sets to set up a mouthwatering matchup with Rafael Nadal. Wimbledon

:18:32. > :18:35.finalist Milos Raonic beat Gilles Simon in four sets. He meets Roberto

:18:36. > :18:41.ask busted a gut, ate the Dominic Thiem plays David Goffin. Dem

:18:42. > :18:45.semester minis -- Denis Istomin has had a long wait to see who he faces

:18:46. > :18:49.next. Dimitrov and Gasquet stepped on court just after midnight.

:18:50. > :18:53.Dimitrov came through that late-night battle. The last 16 in

:18:54. > :18:57.the top half of the draw was decided yesterday, with world number one

:18:58. > :19:01.Andy Murray up against the older Zverev brother, and they are at the

:19:02. > :19:05.bottom is Dan Evans, who admitted his commitment to tennis in the past

:19:06. > :19:09.has been patchy, to say the least, but his wins against Marin Cilic and

:19:10. > :19:13.Bernard Tomic in Melbourne have been outstanding. Winning those matches

:19:14. > :19:17.is special, especially against Bernado his own country, a great

:19:18. > :19:22.atmosphere. The crowd were against me and that is the sort of pinnacle

:19:23. > :19:27.in sport, to come through when they are against you. It was great, it

:19:28. > :19:33.was a great day, evening, whatever it was. I really enjoyed it. I'm

:19:34. > :19:39.looking forward to going again on Sunday. You paid a very emotional

:19:40. > :19:42.coat -- tribute to your former coach, Julien Hoferlin, who died

:19:43. > :19:47.last year. Would you like to tell everybody what he meant to you, and

:19:48. > :19:49.how he has inspired this stage of your career? Yes, obviously

:19:50. > :19:58.everybody in tennis knows what happens to Julien. He died with

:19:59. > :20:03.cancer. Obviously that part of my life, when he coached me, I wasn't

:20:04. > :20:09.giving 100% at all times and there was off court stuff I was doing

:20:10. > :20:14.which he wasn't happy with. It's nights like tonight, obviously sport

:20:15. > :20:18.is about, there's all those people who you want fairer and obviously I

:20:19. > :20:23.wish you could have seen what happened tonight. It -- he would

:20:24. > :20:29.have been pretty proud of my effort. He always said I could do it. So

:20:30. > :20:34.obviously, he always said I should be playing top 40 tennis and in the

:20:35. > :20:39.Grand Slams in the second weeks and stuff, so tonight was obviously for

:20:40. > :20:42.him. He would have been very excited about the thought of you playing

:20:43. > :20:46.Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as well. I've watched him many times in semis and

:20:47. > :20:49.quarterfinals and finals here. He knows his way around the tennis

:20:50. > :20:52.court. So it's going to be tough. I'm going to have to run a lot

:20:53. > :20:58.again. I'm looking forward to it. Everything from now is enjoy it, try

:20:59. > :21:01.to get a win. STUDIO:

:21:02. > :21:02.So Dan Evans has another big name in his sights and that match against

:21:03. > :21:03.Jo-Wilfried So Dan Evans has another big name in

:21:04. > :21:06.his sights and that match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be one of

:21:07. > :21:11.our featured matches tomorrow, along with Andy Murray against Zverev.

:21:12. > :21:16.That is tomorrow. Today has belonged to Johanna Konta and Russell Fuller

:21:17. > :21:21.caught up with the Davis Cup captain John Smith for his thoughts on the

:21:22. > :21:25.British number one. She's been impressive all week and

:21:26. > :21:29.all year, but there was something particularly eye-catching about the

:21:30. > :21:32.way she played today? She has grown into a player that is just really

:21:33. > :21:38.looking to dominate and every time she goes out, and the thing that was

:21:39. > :21:42.so impressive against Wozniacki, a form another one player in the

:21:43. > :21:47.world, is that she can match her for consistency, but then she trumps her

:21:48. > :21:51.for power, athleticism and confidence, and she just looks like

:21:52. > :21:58.she is someone on a mission. She is going from strength to strength. Two

:21:59. > :22:02.more matches involving British players on Sunday, Andy Murray,

:22:03. > :22:06.playing Zverev, unseeded, 29 years of age, seemingly dealing very well

:22:07. > :22:11.with the noises off stage, the chatter about Novak Djokovic's

:22:12. > :22:15.elimination. Look what happened last year at Wimbledon. He had to go

:22:16. > :22:18.through it when Djokovic lost to Sam Querrey early on. Andy Murray is so

:22:19. > :22:22.experienced in these situations that he will just keep that focus of

:22:23. > :22:25.match by match. He talks about it. People might get bored of it but

:22:26. > :22:30.that's what happens, you go by, you get tactically ready for the match

:22:31. > :22:34.against Zverev and that's the key. Then Dan Evans, who probably

:22:35. > :22:37.deserves top billing ahead of Andy Murray, against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

:22:38. > :22:42.When he beat Bernard Tomic I thought he was full of belief. The important

:22:43. > :22:50.thing playing against Tsonga, it's a step up on Tomic, but this year he's

:22:51. > :22:55.dominated and he went on to beach -- he went on to beat Marin Cilic, he

:22:56. > :22:58.has the game to trouble the top ten players and that will give him

:22:59. > :23:02.confidence. He has a game that Tsonga won't be up against that

:23:03. > :23:05.often. He's going to have to execute it very well, because Tsonga is a

:23:06. > :23:09.great player, plays well in Melbourne and he has a good game

:23:10. > :23:12.when he scores. But it is possible and I'm sure that Dan Evans will

:23:13. > :23:17.create opportunities in that match. What a tour de force it has been

:23:18. > :23:20.from Bryn's stars in Melbourne. Another dominant win from Johanna

:23:21. > :23:24.Konta means she'll be back in action on Monday. We'll bring you

:23:25. > :23:30.highlights of the last 16 tie against Makarova, but before that,

:23:31. > :23:34.the boys are back. Andy Murray taking on Zverev, and we'll get to

:23:35. > :23:39.see whether Dan Evans can continue his remarkable run of form against

:23:40. > :23:42.the 12th seed, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Another David versus Goliath matchup

:23:43. > :23:46.for him, but it turns out that's just how he likes it. Thanks very

:23:47. > :23:47.much for watching. See you tomorrow.
