0:00:39 > 0:00:47In 1970, Roger Taylor did it. Seven years later, John Lloyd did it. Andy
0:00:47 > 0:00:53Murray has done it six times, the first in 2010. On Tuesday, Kyle
0:00:53 > 0:00:58Edmund did it.
0:01:02 > 0:01:15Edmund did it. COMMENTATOR: This is his time.Oh, yes!
0:01:21 > 0:01:24Good afternoon, two days ago Kyle Edmund became the fourth British man
0:01:24 > 0:01:29to reach the Australian Open semifinals in the 50 years since
0:01:29 > 0:01:34open tennis began. What an occasion. We woke up excited this morning to
0:01:34 > 0:01:40see how the newest star of British tennis would fare in his first Grand
0:01:40 > 0:01:45Slam semifinal. Life is changed for the quiet and shy 23-year-old from
0:01:45 > 0:01:48Yorkshire as he has been thrust into the spotlight in Melbourne. The
0:01:48 > 0:01:55journey began with an upset in rounds one. He defeated the 11th
0:01:55 > 0:02:03seed and US Open finalist Kevin Anderson. After a straight sets win
0:02:03 > 0:02:09over Denis Istomin he came through an
0:02:09 > 0:02:14an epic battle against Nikoloz Basilashvili. He beat the
0:02:14 > 0:02:18experienced Italian Andreas Seppi to reach his first Grand Slam
0:02:18 > 0:02:24quarterfinal. He followed that up with a blistering display, at
0:02:24 > 0:02:28hitting world number three Grigor Dimitrov to achieve his biggest win
0:02:28 > 0:02:33of his career and continued the remarkable run down under. He had to
0:02:33 > 0:02:39wait for wit but eventually the call came, the ball was out, and Kyle was
0:02:39 > 0:02:46through to the last four. I recognise him! What is the key to
0:02:46 > 0:02:53Kyle Edmund's success? He has credited his coaches Freddie and
0:02:53 > 0:02:57Mark but one man who knows him well is British Davis Cup captain Leon
0:02:57 > 0:03:04Smith, who has been courtside for all his matches and he talks about
0:03:04 > 0:03:08how Kyle's game has evolved. Pre-season he worked hard on his
0:03:08 > 0:03:13serve and the numbers are good with a lot of aces and accurately hitting
0:03:13 > 0:03:18the spots and being more consistent, a big plus. His return has improved.
0:03:18 > 0:03:25In them's tennis they are important, serving, returning. Clearly the
0:03:25 > 0:03:30biggest thing is mindset, confidence. If you look at the first
0:03:30 > 0:03:34win here against Kevin Anderson, he had not beaten a top 15 player.
0:03:34 > 0:03:40Great performances but not a win. When he won that you could see, OK,
0:03:40 > 0:03:46I belong. And he has since built momentum. When you think of the time
0:03:46 > 0:03:50he has spent with Andy Murray, who has taken him under his wing.
0:03:50 > 0:03:56Spending a lot of time at Davis Cup weeks with him, which helps a young
0:03:56 > 0:04:02man, making the transition from juniors. Now he is his own man. In a
0:04:02 > 0:04:07good plays. Last night I saw him, happy and laughing, and he should
0:04:07 > 0:04:12be, in the semifinals of a Grand Slam. He will have to play well and
0:04:12 > 0:04:16playing a long match, you would think, you could not see a quick win
0:04:16 > 0:04:21against Marin Cilic but it is about taking chances and executing them
0:04:21 > 0:04:25well.Kyle Edmund is one of the biggest hitters on tour and today
0:04:25 > 0:04:29faced another in Marin Cilic. New territory for Kyle Edmund, but Marin
0:04:29 > 0:04:35has been there before, winning his first Grand Slam in the US Open in
0:04:35 > 0:04:402014 and lost the Wimbledon final last year when blisters thwarted his
0:04:40 > 0:04:44chances against Roger Federer. Cilic has experience in the latter stages
0:04:44 > 0:04:51of Grand Slams. No doubt nerves were jangling as Kyle Edmund made his way
0:04:51 > 0:04:56to court. This is what you train for, this is why you work hard, to
0:04:56 > 0:05:01compete in matches like this. We are set for Cilic against Edmund and we
0:05:01 > 0:05:05join the match from the start with commentators John Lloyd and Andrew
0:05:05 > 0:05:10Castle.
0:05:23 > 0:05:29As a statement of intent, that first point tells you a lot. Kyle Edmund
0:05:29 > 0:05:33settling in, teeing off on the second serve return and backing it
0:05:33 > 0:05:39up with a little bit of touch.
0:06:28 > 0:06:33Cilic has been bouncing the ball a lot. It is an indication of nerves.
0:06:33 > 0:06:38Kyle Edmund getting hold of the returns on the forehand sign. It is
0:06:38 > 0:06:45a bright start for the English player.
0:06:50 > 0:07:00It is a fantastic start. Not just his forehand which has caused
0:07:00 > 0:07:06eyebrows to raise during the course of this Australian Open and the five
0:07:06 > 0:07:12matches he has won, it is his backhand. Freddie working with Kyle
0:07:12 > 0:07:13Edmund.
0:07:50 > 0:07:56Two break points saved with two first serves to Kyle Edmund's
0:07:56 > 0:08:05backhand side. It is a
0:08:05 > 0:08:07backhand side. It is a settler for Cilic.
0:08:32 > 0:08:36UMPIRE:Mr Cilic is challenging the call.
0:08:36 > 0:08:41The umpire, from Australia.
0:08:50 > 0:08:57The eyes have not settled into the match yet, Cilic.
0:09:41 > 0:09:50A bit unlucky there. The net cord slowed the ball up. Good that he is
0:09:50 > 0:09:54using this shot, twice in the opening game. One a winner and that
0:09:54 > 0:10:03just hit the top of the net. But that could be an important shot. To
0:10:03 > 0:10:04open up the forehand side.
0:10:28 > 0:10:35It is a great game to win for Marin Cilic, two break points down. His
0:10:35 > 0:10:39nerves were frayed, he looked rattled, bouncing the ball a lot,
0:10:39 > 0:10:47but a fine hold. 1-0. STUDIO: A promising start from Carl
0:10:47 > 0:10:52Edmund. We pick up the action later in the set at 3-2 and Edmund
0:10:52 > 0:11:01serving. -- Kyle Edmund.
0:12:07 > 0:12:13A good return from Cilic. But Edmund a little bit slow to get out wider
0:12:13 > 0:12:14for the backhand.
0:12:39 > 0:12:54Some big forehands in that rally. Deeper.Just over 20 minutes in and
0:12:54 > 0:12:59Cilic, who said two break points on his own serve has two opportunities
0:12:59 > 0:13:06to strike the first blow here.
0:13:10 > 0:13:18The umpire just reacting to a glance from Cilic, how was that? Yes,
0:13:18 > 0:13:21looked long. Of course, he could have challenged.
0:13:32 > 0:13:41That is a wave. The net cord has not helped -- away. This former Grand
0:13:41 > 0:13:49Slam champion, former US Open champion in 2014, Cilic, strikes the
0:13:49 > 0:13:54first blow. This is the last game with the slightly older tennis
0:13:54 > 0:14:02balls, so perhaps not as quick through the air. Edmund will want to
0:14:02 > 0:14:07strike back straightaway.
0:14:22 > 0:14:28A superb volley from Cilic, a difficult volley with no pace to
0:14:28 > 0:14:37work with. This one, look at the way he opened the racket face. Really
0:14:37 > 0:14:41tough for Edmund to get over someone as tall as Cilic from that position
0:14:41 > 0:14:48on the court.
0:14:49 > 0:14:54He will have to watch on the service game, the second serve is a little
0:14:54 > 0:15:00bit too much down the middle of the court and Cilic, unlike Grigor
0:15:00 > 0:15:06Dimitrov, will get around the second serve and put you under pressure off
0:15:06 > 0:15:07the serve.
0:15:20 > 0:15:25That is what I can do to you when you hit short on the serve.
0:16:05 > 0:16:12Cilic backing up the break of serve with these pounding ground strokes.
0:16:12 > 0:16:16How will Kyle Edmund counter this? How will he resist the onslaught
0:16:16 > 0:16:26from Cilic? He will have to think on his feet in this match. That is a
0:16:26 > 0:16:33relief, he was nowhere near that.
0:18:07 > 0:18:11The backhand down the line has caused as many problems for Cilic as
0:18:11 > 0:18:19the much talked about Kyle Edmund forehand.
0:18:22 > 0:18:28forehand.It is the accurate serve we have talked about. Not as many
0:18:28 > 0:18:35aces as the big guys but that serve puts you under such pressure.
0:19:02 > 0:19:07The backhand mistake. Cilic, big hold. Tremendous seven games for
0:19:07 > 0:19:11Cilic from break points down in the first game. His coach delighted.
0:19:11 > 0:19:165-2, Cilic.
0:20:50 > 0:20:56I wonder if he should push this back into play. Something they have been
0:20:56 > 0:21:01working on.
0:21:06 > 0:21:10working on. A couple of very important pushes on the forehand
0:21:10 > 0:21:19side just blocking either a return or a tough ball out wide.
0:21:19 > 0:21:20or a tough ball out wide. In his previous match, a fantastic victory
0:21:20 > 0:21:27over Grigor Dimitrov. You just bolster Holden asks Cilic the
0:21:27 > 0:21:38question, can you hold your nerve when the pressure is on?
0:21:38 > 0:21:41when the pressure is on? -- you just ask Cilic the question. Cilic is
0:21:41 > 0:21:47returning well. He is returning fast. The ball is arriving back at
0:21:47 > 0:21:52Kyle Edmund very quickly. At the moment, the Edmund serve on the
0:21:52 > 0:22:00forehand, the big weapons, not having much penetration on Cilic.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03having much penetration on Cilic. He does not want to go for shots like
0:22:03 > 0:22:16that after his first serve. He is not dominating in those areas.
0:22:16 > 0:22:24Looking to break for the second time, Cilic. Set point.
0:22:24 > 0:22:31And you have to say that is just too good. But remember, Cilic phased
0:22:31 > 0:22:37break points first. An absolute key moment in game number one. Cilic put
0:22:37 > 0:22:43it behind him and after 35 minutes, not looking quite so good now for
0:22:43 > 0:22:48Britain's Australian Open semifinalist.
0:22:48 > 0:22:53STUDIO: Edmund struggling physically and called for the trainer and after
0:22:53 > 0:22:58lengthy discussion the two left the court to receive treatment. A sad
0:22:58 > 0:23:02sight for British bands but despite this Kyle Edmund picked up his game
0:23:02 > 0:23:14to go toe to toe with Cilic in set number two. And 2-2, this happened.
0:23:15 > 0:23:21UMPIRE:Mr Cilic is challenging the call.
0:23:25 > 0:23:3015-0.
0:23:41 > 0:23:47The amount of times I have said that... Exactly, that is the whole
0:23:47 > 0:23:53idea.Get the referee, that is rubbish. Edmund pumped up and on the
0:23:53 > 0:23:58next point the powerful return sent a clear message. However, Cilic
0:23:58 > 0:24:03rallied to hold serve and we pick up the match at 4-4.
0:24:26 > 0:24:37ANDREW CASTLE: Tight.
0:25:05 > 0:25:22An excellent return backed up by the big forehand. 0- 13. -- 0-30.
0:25:22 > 0:25:29No first serves yet for Cilic in this important game.
0:25:48 > 0:25:55That was a short second serve. That was a tight serve. He got away with
0:25:55 > 0:26:02it. Good matchplay from Kyle Edmund. He was going to go for that. He is
0:26:02 > 0:26:09not going to hang about.
0:26:16 > 0:26:22He still cannot find a first serve.
0:26:22 > 0:26:29Does Edmund threaten the second again?
0:26:33 > 0:26:38It hit the line.
0:26:42 > 0:26:56Net cord onto the line. Tight. A bit nervy.
0:27:06 > 0:27:10This barren run on the first serve was not going to last the whole
0:27:10 > 0:27:18game, was it?No.
0:27:45 > 0:27:53Cilic holding from 0-30 down. An important hold. Just a game away
0:27:53 > 0:27:58from going two sets up. STUDIO: A missed opportunity for
0:27:58 > 0:28:04Edmund. The rest the set goes with serve and we pick up action at the
0:28:04 > 0:28:06start the tie-break.
0:29:26 > 0:29:34It is excellent work from Britain's Kyle Edmund. Ranked at number 49 in
0:29:34 > 0:29:42the world. And bidding to become the lowest ranked player to reach a
0:29:42 > 0:29:45Grand Slam final in singles since Marcos Baghdatis here. 12 years ago
0:29:45 > 0:29:54now. He was ranked at 54. He's not about rankings right now.
0:30:10 > 0:30:16Cilic is the US Open champion in 2014, he dismissed Federer and
0:30:16 > 0:30:26kindness should -- Nishikori in the final. He has been there and done
0:30:26 > 0:30:33it.
0:31:08 > 0:31:12Croatian heavy mob delighted with that one.
0:31:29 > 0:31:38Superb backhand down-the-line. Superb return from Cilic.
0:32:12 > 0:32:18You have to take your hat off to Marin Cilic's work. A return right
0:32:18 > 0:32:25from the return. Cilic dictating. Having the courage to strike,
0:32:25 > 0:32:36strooic the ball firmly and drive through.
0:32:49 > 0:32:58Bound to be challenged.
0:32:58 > 0:33:03Did it drop?
0:33:10 > 0:33:18Yes. It did.Replay the point, unfortunately means Cilic gets a
0:33:18 > 0:33:19first serve.
0:33:43 > 0:33:47Absolutely brittleant. I mean that thing was way up in the Australian
0:33:47 > 0:33:54sky. The volley was the one. He came in here and he was a bit careful on
0:33:54 > 0:33:59that one. It almost went out.
0:35:30 > 0:35:36Marin Cilic... Vastly experienced Croatian player. The backhand strike
0:35:36 > 0:35:40and really you have to say he's got for this serve.
0:35:42 > 0:35:48A long way back now for Kyle Edmund.
0:35:48 > 0:35:52So Cilic raised his game when it mattered in the tie-break and gave
0:35:52 > 0:35:59himself a commanding lead in the match. We rejoin knit the third set.
0:35:59 > 0:36:03-- rejoin it in the third set. Edmund serving.
0:36:08 > 0:36:14, when you haven't come back from two sets down in your career...It's
0:36:14 > 0:36:22tough. This would be the greatest achievement.
0:36:22 > 0:36:27Especially injured, as we think he is.
0:36:27 > 0:36:35What a return. What a return. That's as good as it gets right
0:36:35 > 0:36:40there from Marin Cilic.
0:37:28 > 0:37:33A big return. The difference between him and Dimitrov on the Kyle Edmund
0:37:33 > 0:37:40serve. Dimitrov tended to slice the ball back. Edmund was always in the
0:37:40 > 0:37:49point, but Cilic can hurt you so badly on the return of serve.
0:38:04 > 0:38:10Took the pace off it and the blow in this third and possibly final set is
0:38:10 > 0:38:14struck by Marin Cilic, who will go to world number three with a victory
0:38:14 > 0:38:19here, which will be a new career-high. What has Edmund got
0:38:19 > 0:38:26left?Another break for Cilic. Could there be anyway back for Edmund? We
0:38:26 > 0:38:35pick up the action at 4-2 in the third set.
0:38:41 > 0:38:45Not getting down on the ball. It is an effort, isn't it? It's not that
0:38:45 > 0:38:50spring that he had in the earlier rounds.
0:38:50 > 0:38:56That must be a little thought going through Leon Smith's head right now,
0:38:56 > 0:39:07watching this, I would imagine.
0:39:15 > 0:39:23Britain to play Spain away on clay.
0:39:23 > 0:39:30Going to Marbella. Three days, starting from next Friday.
0:39:32 > 0:39:36There's that forehand. Haven't talked too much about it this match
0:39:36 > 0:39:41because we haven't seen that many winners of it.
0:39:41 > 0:39:47Been one of the great shots of the tournament, I think if you listen to
0:39:47 > 0:39:51all the ex-players and even players who played against Edmund. Talking
0:39:51 > 0:40:01about, it is a huge weapon, but not tonight. Not today, should I say?
0:40:04 > 0:40:10Superb! We think back to the blisters and the slight meltdown he
0:40:10 > 0:40:16had against Roger Federer, having beaten Sam Querrey in the
0:40:16 > 0:40:26semi-finals of Wimbledon. He wasn't able to give his best. But Cilic...
0:40:31 > 0:40:37Cilic, such belief in his game now.
0:40:41 > 0:40:47A tremendous tournament, no matter what happens for Kyle Edmund and his
0:40:47 > 0:40:51coach there and Mark Hylton as well. More to come, but perhaps not
0:40:51 > 0:41:00tonight.
0:41:25 > 0:41:33I think he's doing superbly well, Kyle, I really do. You see the limp
0:41:33 > 0:41:42when he's walking between points.
0:41:54 > 0:41:57It is amazing how many times a player get injured when they are
0:41:57 > 0:42:01achieving new heights in the game. It is a mental as well as physical
0:42:01 > 0:42:09strain. You are just going into neuterry Tory.
0:42:09 > 0:42:14-- into new territory. A new career high-ranking waits, a new
0:42:14 > 0:42:24reputation. New expectation.
0:42:32 > 0:42:38Who knows, he might not be done here.It is not easy getting across
0:42:38 > 0:42:43the winning line.
0:43:04 > 0:43:09He had a similar sort of return of serve on break point, Cilic and hit
0:43:09 > 0:43:21it out. But no messing around with this one.
0:44:19 > 0:44:34It is hard to play with 70% of your weight on your left foot.
0:44:50 > 0:44:54The only break points Kyle Edmund had were in the first game of the
0:44:54 > 0:44:56match.
0:45:03 > 0:45:14This is a virtual match point.
0:45:14 > 0:45:21Marin Cilic is on for big serves and his spirit have taken him one game
0:45:21 > 0:45:23away from another major final.
0:45:26 > 0:45:30It's been a fantastic tournament for Britain's Kyle Edmund. No matter
0:45:30 > 0:45:36what happens, over the next few minutes, he'll be so proud he's made
0:45:36 > 0:45:42his first semifinal at this level. But Marin Cilic, he's been there
0:45:42 > 0:45:46before, on how many occasions? Serves for a place in this
0:45:46 > 0:45:52Australian final.
0:47:17 > 0:47:26It is just a sledgehammer of a serve. Six foot six inches tall.
0:47:27 > 0:47:29Two points away.
0:47:44 > 0:47:54Very tidy. Playing percentages beautifully against his opponent.
0:47:56 > 0:48:01Second tie-break in this match. Cilic with two points to advance to
0:48:01 > 0:48:12another Grand Slam final.
0:48:18 > 0:48:23Fabulous from Marin Cilic. Straight sets. Fabulous tournament for Kyle
0:48:23 > 0:48:31Edmund. He wishes Cilic well. He wishes him well for Sunday's
0:48:31 > 0:48:37final. That is a tremendous effort, it really is. Could have easily gone
0:48:37 > 0:48:41away against Rafael Nadal, who played Roberto Bautista Agut earlier
0:48:41 > 0:48:45in the tournament. These are hard men to play. He's been in the final
0:48:45 > 0:48:53of Wimbledon. He's won the US Open and now the third of the four slams,
0:48:53 > 0:48:58he's in the final in Melbourne. Kyle Edmund would have learnt such a lot,
0:48:58 > 0:49:02John Lloyd, over the course of his six matches here. I don't think Ed
0:49:02 > 0:49:06mund has been at his best, certainly not the case. I think we'll find out
0:49:06 > 0:49:18more about his injury.It's been a tremendous tournament. He knows
0:49:18 > 0:49:20tremendous tournament. He knows now he belongs. Talking about the latter
0:49:20 > 0:49:27stages of a Grand Slam. He competed well. He definitely wasn't quite
0:49:27 > 0:49:29right.
0:49:29 > 0:49:34You have become the first Croatian, male or female to make it to an
0:49:34 > 0:49:38Australian final. That is a great way to start our interview.
0:49:38 > 0:49:44Congratulations with that. You, the first set, you faced a couple of
0:49:44 > 0:49:48break points in your first service game, then you got on a roll. Turned
0:49:48 > 0:49:52it around the second set. It became very competitive. How about that
0:49:52 > 0:49:55second part of the set - what were the keys to get you to that two set
0:49:55 > 0:50:00to love lead?I think the second set I was moving up and down with my
0:50:00 > 0:50:05game. I was not getting enough returns back to put pressure on him
0:50:05 > 0:50:09and his service games. He started to serve quite good and started to
0:50:09 > 0:50:13release a couple of his forehands. It was difficult to connect a couple
0:50:13 > 0:50:18of points in a row. I just stayed mentally very focussed to play every
0:50:18 > 0:50:21single point. It was crucial in the tie-break obviously to keep that
0:50:21 > 0:50:26pressure.After the first set, he went off court. He received some
0:50:26 > 0:50:29medical treatment and he seemed to play quite well after that. But
0:50:29 > 0:50:33maybe looked like towards the end of the first set he was slowing a
0:50:33 > 0:50:36little bit. How aware were you of his condition? How much do you pay
0:50:36 > 0:50:40attention to that in a significant match like this?I noticed that in
0:50:40 > 0:50:44the third game in the third set, when I broke him, he just let a
0:50:44 > 0:50:49couple of balls go past him. So, I was realising that he might want to
0:50:49 > 0:50:54release a couple more forehands now. I was seeing at his moment he was a
0:50:54 > 0:50:59little bit restricted. I tried to move the ball around and obviously
0:50:59 > 0:51:03that second break was extremely crucial. It is his first semifinal.
0:51:03 > 0:51:07He's a player on the rise. What is your overall thoughts on Kyle and
0:51:07 > 0:51:11his future going forward. He's one of the young stars coming into the
0:51:11 > 0:51:16game now. He's been playing tennis greatly the last couple of days. He
0:51:16 > 0:51:22started great this year. He had an extremely tough run to the semis.
0:51:22 > 0:51:27Four setters as well. Definitely it left some scars on his body, as I
0:51:27 > 0:51:32can feel that too. But that means he's got a bright future and we will
0:51:32 > 0:51:34be seeing him a lot around.
0:51:37 > 0:51:43In the end a straight sets win for Cilic. The enormity of the occasion
0:51:43 > 0:51:50taking its toil on Tiel. Let's see what he said after the match. In the
0:51:50 > 0:51:54short-term I am disappointed. I have to accept that and didn't get my
0:51:54 > 0:52:01best out on court, that's for sure. So many positives override the whole
0:52:01 > 0:52:04two weeks thatvy to focus on that. Very pleased with what I did at the
0:52:04 > 0:52:10start of the year.Was it a hip problem?Yes. There's a bit of a
0:52:10 > 0:52:14problem, but it's irrelevant right now. When you get this environment,
0:52:14 > 0:52:20the latter stage of a Grand Slam you get the bug to want more and it's
0:52:20 > 0:52:25like you get greedy. It only gives you more determination to put it
0:52:25 > 0:52:30right next time. I'm in that situation I could have handled it
0:52:30 > 0:52:35better, know what to expect. In the short-term I have a bit of a problem
0:52:35 > 0:52:42with my hip, but, it's what it is. So, next week I want to be in
0:52:42 > 0:52:47Marbella playing. If I am not ready, I'm not ready.Fingers crossed he'll
0:52:47 > 0:52:55be OK for the Davis Cup next week. Cilic is through.
0:52:57 > 0:53:02We will have highlights tomorrow from 5pm in the afternoon.
0:53:02 > 0:53:09It was It wasn't to be for Kyle Edmund. You feel sorry because the
0:53:09 > 0:53:15injury did affect him in the match early?Absolutely. He's
0:53:15 > 0:53:16injury did affect him in the match early?Absolutely. He's had such an
0:53:16 > 0:53:20amazing Tournament from being a very good player. You wonder if he's got
0:53:20 > 0:53:24that extra thing to move up to the top. During the off season it is
0:53:24 > 0:53:28amazing, his return of serve now is so much better. The serve and the
0:53:28 > 0:53:32forehand which were big have got better. Now he looks like he feels
0:53:32 > 0:53:35he belongs with the big guys and he does. But today he wasn't there. For
0:53:35 > 0:53:41him to have beaten Cilic, he would have had to have been at 100%.You
0:53:41 > 0:53:45will not get many cheap points from Marin Cilic, are you?Especially
0:53:45 > 0:53:51after taking a medical time out. We were not sure about it. We have more
0:53:51 > 0:53:57clarity now. As well as belonging, he's happen p i to go toe-to--- he's
0:53:57 > 0:54:02happy to go toe-to-toe with these guys. Did the same with Dimitrov to
0:54:02 > 0:54:06come back to win in five sets. Cilic, you mentioned earlier on, in
0:54:06 > 0:54:11the heat and what is really good news is that he was happy to go
0:54:11 > 0:54:18toe-to-toe with this six foot six inch Croatian and I love it. There
0:54:18 > 0:54:22was an alteration after the medical time out, he's not feeling good and
0:54:22 > 0:54:25then this, they will love this - look at this moment here. This
0:54:25 > 0:54:26then this, they will love this - look at this moment here. This is a
0:54:26 > 0:54:31return On the forehand. Don't blink! Bang! That is after an altercation
0:54:31 > 0:54:35and that tells you a lot about the young man. It tells you he's
0:54:35 > 0:54:40maturing. He's 23 now. Look there... Loves that moment. There's been a
0:54:40 > 0:54:43fight and he was ready to take him on. That will be very important
0:54:43 > 0:54:47going ahead. People like Cilic do not buckle easily. He had his
0:54:47 > 0:54:53chances. 4-4 in that second set. 0-30. Some points he would love to
0:54:53 > 0:54:56replay.He had that second serve return and that one there. He was
0:54:56 > 0:54:59off balance. Didn't really go for that one the way he should have
0:54:59 > 0:55:03done. He had a chance in the next rally as well. This was the game for
0:55:03 > 0:55:10him. It wasn't quite there today. He He had to win the second set and
0:55:10 > 0:55:15that could have gone anywhere. These are the margins. Who would have
0:55:15 > 0:55:22thought a bloke ranked 4th, OK he's been top 0 -- 49th. OK he's been top
0:55:22 > 0:55:2740. Who would have thought he could have been here or there. I don't
0:55:27 > 0:55:33think he was fit enough. For such a shy man, and he is, he's really
0:55:33 > 0:55:37taken the spotlight and he's embraced it.He has. He looks like
0:55:37 > 0:55:41he belongs now. At this game, when you get to the top level, this is
0:55:41 > 0:55:45where it all counts. Now he believes in ims. I think there have been
0:55:45 > 0:55:50occasions in the last couple of years at times he's looked brittle.
0:55:50 > 0:55:53Particularly when he's up against opponents and they have got his game
0:55:53 > 0:55:58plan. He's gone away easily at times. I was thinking, I don't know
0:55:58 > 0:56:01if he'll have that Plan B and C, which you need to. During these two
0:56:01 > 0:56:06weeks he's had to play amazing matches in the heat. He's come
0:56:06 > 0:56:09through and now he thinks he belongs. They have worked him hard
0:56:09 > 0:56:16and he will go up.Pat Cash believes he can be a top ten player. Do you
0:56:16 > 0:56:20believe that?It is one of the favourite conversations - watching
0:56:20 > 0:56:25the growth of this young man. I think people would say top 20, if he
0:56:25 > 0:56:30does well. Maybe top 30. We can say safely top ten is within reach.
0:56:30 > 0:56:34Whether he can win a slam, who knows? It doesn't matter what we
0:56:34 > 0:56:39think, anyway. It is what's in here for him. I think he feels he's
0:56:39 > 0:56:43maximising his potential. People say, are we putting too much
0:56:43 > 0:56:47pressure on him? No. He loves it. He's ready and it will be fun to
0:56:47 > 0:56:51watch. We're very lucky to watch another player at this level. He
0:56:51 > 0:56:56will be seeded at the slams as well. That is all good news. Wasn't to be
0:56:56 > 0:57:01today for Kyle Edmund. Other matches were played and the lady's final was
0:57:01 > 0:57:07decided. Caroline Wozniacki won
0:57:07 > 0:57:09decided. Caroline Wozniacki won in straight
0:57:09 > 0:57:13sets Beating Mertens. Wozniacki got tense trying to close out the match.
0:57:15 > 0:57:25And in the finals she will face Simona Halep. She beat Kerber. So, a
0:57:25 > 0:57:29first Grand Slam title and the number one ranking at stake on
0:57:29 > 0:57:32Saturday.
0:57:33 > 0:57:37For one of them it will be third time lucky. We will have highlights
0:57:37 > 0:57:44on BBC One on Saturday at 1. 15pm of that lady's final. There is a lot of
0:57:44 > 0:57:47sport to look forward to before then. It will be a late night if you
0:57:47 > 0:57:53want to watch the indoor bowls championship. We will be back
0:57:53 > 0:57:58tomorrow - 5pm, on BBC Two,
0:58:07 > 0:58:12So, all of that to come. The three of us will be back tomorrow. Will it
0:58:12 > 0:58:18be a repeat of the Wimbledon final? Probably. For Kyle Edmund, well his
0:58:18 > 0:58:22superb run is over, but we have enjoyed the journey. We hope you
0:58:22 > 0:58:29did, too. Goodbye.
0:58:29 > 0:58:37It is not looking so good now for Britain's Australian semi-finalist.
0:58:37 > 0:58:44Kyle Edmund has taken this time out. Kyle never loses it. A long way back
0:58:44 > 0:58:47now for Edmund. Fabulous performance from Marin
0:58:47 > 0:58:52Cilic. A fabulous
