0:00:42 > 0:00:46Fabulous performance from Marin Cilic. Fabulous tournament. For Kyle

0:00:46 > 0:00:54Edmund. Kyle Edmund will have learned such a lot over the course

0:00:54 > 0:00:57of his six matches here.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59learned such a lot over the course of his six matches here.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01Yesterday, sadly, the end of the road for Kyle Edmund as he was

0:01:01 > 0:01:05beaten by the big hit in Croatian, Marin Cilic. But he can walk away

0:01:05 > 0:01:09with immense pride in his achievements down under, along with

0:01:09 > 0:01:15a large pay packet and a ranking set to soar. So, Cilic is through to

0:01:15 > 0:01:19face the winner of today's semifinal. Like yesterday, youth

0:01:19 > 0:01:24against experience, as the great Roger Federer takes on 21-year-old

0:01:24 > 0:01:35Hyeon Chung. A Matt Schaub contrasting styles and much more. --

0:01:35 > 0:01:41a match of contrasting styles and much more.

0:01:41 > 0:01:56Federer wins the Australian Open.It is just the start of his career.

0:02:03 > 0:02:15That was breathtaking. It is all about Roger Federer. That was a

0:02:15 > 0:02:23performance that will live long in the memory.

0:02:23 > 0:02:31The difference between the two is vast. The question is, can Chung

0:02:31 > 0:02:35channel his inner Djokovic? His results have certainly been

0:02:35 > 0:02:38impressive so far. In a third-round committee defeated another one of

0:02:38 > 0:02:44the rising stars, and then next round was Djokovic. Not many people

0:02:44 > 0:02:48get to meet their idols, even fewer get to beat them, but Chung outrun

0:02:48 > 0:02:53and outplayed the six time champion, such is the changing face of men's

0:02:53 > 0:03:00tennis. One seemingly unstoppable force stands firm, wafting everybody

0:03:00 > 0:03:04aside with ease. Yet to drop a set or be troubled. So, today, could

0:03:04 > 0:03:08this man find the formula to challenge Roger? The young South

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Korean made along, nervous walk for the biggest match of his career so

0:03:12 > 0:03:19far, his first major semifinal. For this round, though, it is familiar

0:03:19 > 0:03:24territory. His 14th Australian Open semifinal, 43rd in total in Grand

0:03:24 > 0:03:28Slams. The records continue to tumble when this man steps onto

0:03:28 > 0:03:31court. We can join the match at the start, with our commentators John

0:03:31 > 0:03:38Lloyd and Andrew Castle.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19APPLAUSE

0:04:27 > 0:04:32That is a fascinating first game. Roger Federer, testing, pulling

0:04:32 > 0:04:36Chung from side to side. An indoor match, a celebration of everything

0:04:36 > 0:04:40Roger Federer has achieved before. An amazing atmosphere at the Rod

0:04:40 > 0:04:47Laver Arena. Chung responding. He will find himself under pressure in

0:04:47 > 0:04:49this game. He already is.

0:05:46 > 0:05:54Welcome to a Grand Slam semifinal, Hyeon Chung South Korea, the first

0:05:54 > 0:06:00South Korean player to achieve a major semifinal. Yesterday, Kyle

0:06:00 > 0:06:10Edmund against Marin Cilic, two break points in game one.

0:06:38 > 0:06:47Chung, so loose of ligament, flexibility, great natural athlete.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52Lateral

0:06:52 > 0:06:54Lateral mover. He's had a lot of injuries.

0:07:03 > 0:07:12Five Australian Opens.

0:07:27 > 0:07:37Well done, Chung.Didn't like the look of that rally. Thought Federer

0:07:37 > 0:07:40was manoeuvring him around and got set with the big forehand. That is

0:07:40 > 0:07:46normally a shot where, well, I'll see you later. But he missed it at

0:07:46 > 0:07:50the top of the net.If Federer doesn't come through this game he

0:07:50 > 0:07:54will be extremely disappointed. He knows exactly what he is facing now.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Chung hits the ball hard, he moves superbly and he has youth on his

0:07:57 > 0:07:58side.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21Brutal opening game.

0:08:47 > 0:08:53Federer gets the breakthrough. A 43rd semifinal in majors, which is

0:08:53 > 0:08:57utterly ridiculous. Every spectator enjoying that opening game.

0:09:33 > 0:09:40Chung has not played badly. He has hit the ball great. But it comes

0:09:40 > 0:09:42back half-volley, back to a length.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Bit late.

0:10:45 > 0:10:51CROWD GASPS

0:10:51 > 0:11:02I thought that was coming, the way Federer was looking over.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20The ball is arriving very quickly back at Federer. He will know

0:11:20 > 0:11:24exactly what he is facing tonight. He knows it is the best of five

0:11:24 > 0:11:31sets. Eight minutes played, as you can see. Although Federer is in

0:11:31 > 0:11:38charge, seemingly, we will see about this one.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50That's good.

0:11:56 > 0:12:01If the South Korean player can just stick around for a while, Federer

0:12:01 > 0:12:06has come out excited, playing well. We know his record in all regards.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09Phenomenal. His reputation is second to none. But there is no doubt that

0:12:09 > 0:12:15Chung's ground strokes are a match for Federer.

0:12:25 > 0:12:37Yes, the top-spin bringing it down. Called that before it even bounced.

0:12:41 > 0:12:47That is a shame for Chung because he is in the rally. He might not be,

0:12:47 > 0:12:48after this.

0:14:32 > 0:14:39Top of the net. Fortune favouring Federer, there. It was high enough

0:14:39 > 0:14:44to go over. It would have been a pretty tough volley for the South

0:14:44 > 0:14:53Korean player. It would have been a pretty defensive volley.

0:14:53 > 0:15:04What a tough opening stanza disses. -- this is.

0:15:11 > 0:15:24The two opening games have gone to Roger Federer. Not without a fight.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05He suffocates you, Roger Federer. You have no time to breathe. He is

0:16:05 > 0:16:10just on top of the ball. So close to the baseline, just not giving you a

0:16:10 > 0:16:18chance to prepare for the next shot.

0:17:58 > 0:18:08This content -- contest is very much alive.A dominant opening from Roger

0:18:08 > 0:18:12Federer and he would break again. We rejoin at 5-1, Chung serving to stay

0:18:12 > 0:18:19in the set.

0:18:23 > 0:18:2815 straight sets for Roger Federer at this Grand Slam Championship.

0:18:28 > 0:18:34Carving through the draw. The first time he has got to the semifinal of

0:18:34 > 0:18:42a slam doing this, this is the 11th time, getting to the semifinal

0:18:42 > 0:18:45without losing a set, five times he has gone on to win the tournament,

0:18:45 > 0:18:49two without losing a set!

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Sometimes I wonder if he looks down the other end and wonders how

0:19:04 > 0:19:08anybody is making a living from tennis. They are all rubbish!

0:19:20 > 0:19:24Slowing at first serve speed down, if he misses his first serve, his

0:19:24 > 0:19:28second serve is getting attacked big time, he will slow that down just to

0:19:28 > 0:19:35get the first serve in.

0:20:36 > 0:20:41Five Australian Open is won by Roger Federer.

0:20:41 > 0:20:48He could take a step toward a sixth.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Marin Cilic is waiting in the final.

0:21:42 > 0:21:47It's a good job that was catching a bit of the rockets, otherwise that

0:21:47 > 0:21:53would have been a complete

0:21:53 > 0:21:59would have been a complete whiff. -- caught a bit of the racket.Would

0:21:59 > 0:22:02have been a complete airball.

0:22:19 > 0:22:26Not a good idea coming in on the Federer forehand. Not a good idea

0:22:26 > 0:22:29coming in period, I think, the way that Federer is playing at the

0:22:29 > 0:22:31moment. Too much room.

0:22:34 > 0:22:41Too much time.

0:22:49 > 0:23:00Just a little too cute. Federer had made the move.

0:23:47 > 0:23:55Just does not give him time.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59Not a bad first serve. It comes at him so fast he can barely flick that

0:23:59 > 0:24:08back, and then opening straight to the Federer forehand.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10the Federer forehand.Eric Garner. And Mark Webber, there.

0:24:19 > 0:24:23Sending out all of these messages during this set. Any time he missed

0:24:23 > 0:24:28the first serve, I'm standing straight in the baseline. Any time

0:24:28 > 0:24:32you hit a ground strokes, if it is not within two feet of the baseline,

0:24:32 > 0:24:38I am smacking it wider view. Just taking no time, giving him no time

0:24:38 > 0:24:45to relax.

0:24:48 > 0:24:52Having to flick balls from within a foot of the line, it is coming at

0:24:52 > 0:24:57him so quickly.Showtime, isn't it? Absolute showtime. Federer giving no

0:24:57 > 0:25:06time whatsoever, ala Agassi. Probably the most improved shot in

0:25:06 > 0:25:11tennis over the last five years, the film crew backhand. -- the Federer

0:25:11 > 0:25:16backhand.

0:25:17 > 0:25:23The ATP most improved player in 2015, Chung. He won four challenges

0:25:23 > 0:25:28that year, rose up to a ranking high. He has had a lot of injury

0:25:28 > 0:25:36problems. I hope that settled down, he's only 21.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52That is just the Federer presents that created that double fault. He

0:25:52 > 0:25:57has had left ankle and heel problems, and abdominal problems,

0:25:57 > 0:26:06has Chung. Maybe too many repetitive practices between 13 and 15.

0:26:21 > 0:26:28That is an amazing game of tennis.

0:26:28 > 0:26:29Rod Laver

0:26:29 > 0:26:36Rod Laver, dad, everybody in awe of Roger Federer, as we are.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42A brilliant set of tennis from Federer. The early exchanges of the

0:26:42 > 0:26:45second set went with serve and we pick up the action again at 2-1,

0:26:45 > 0:26:48with the South Korean serving.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44Another example where Chung is just not doing enough on his ground

0:27:44 > 0:27:51strokes.

0:27:55 > 0:27:59Still, that first serve percentage is still low.

0:28:21 > 0:28:26A Grand Slam final on his eighth appearance at a major Championship,

0:28:26 > 0:28:30only his eighth. Pete Sampras did that in 1990. At the last time

0:28:30 > 0:28:34somebody made a slam final that quick, of course, he went on and won

0:28:34 > 0:28:34it.

0:28:39 > 0:28:48But it is a long long way away now. Very easy for him to be panicky,

0:28:48 > 0:28:52which he is at the moment, in this situation. Playing in his first

0:28:52 > 0:28:57semifinals, against the greatest player of all-time, things going

0:28:57 > 0:29:03away rapidly.

0:29:07 > 0:29:11That is a correction, and that ball is good, that should be Chung's

0:29:11 > 0:29:14point. For sure, that should be? This is what happened yesterday with

0:29:14 > 0:29:22Kyle Edmund. The call did not hinder you, it was after you missed the

0:29:22 > 0:29:30shot.Players hate this, there needs to be a definite rule. It is left in

0:29:30 > 0:29:35the hands of the umpire, it is pretty much a judgment call, whether

0:29:35 > 0:29:41or not a corrected serve or wrong call affected the return. In that

0:29:41 > 0:29:51case, I think Ramos is absolutely right, the umpire.

0:30:03 > 0:30:12I don't know, what can you say? Exactly.That is ridiculous.You run

0:30:12 > 0:30:19out of things to say. It is so good all the time. The winners just keep

0:30:19 > 0:30:27on piling up. One is as good as the other.19 winners name. Precision.

0:30:27 > 0:30:3714 in the first set. A first set he won 6-1. Andy got less than a third

0:30:37 > 0:30:47of his first serves. -- and he got less than.

0:31:04 > 0:31:14That's amazing. It can be a lonely place, a tennis court, one-on-one.

0:31:14 > 0:31:19Semifinal, in front of millions of people. You have got to dig deep.

0:31:19 > 0:31:23Chung has got to have faith in his ability to turn this around. Easier

0:31:23 > 0:31:28said than done.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35said than done. This is the guy that has beaten Novak Djokovic during

0:31:35 > 0:31:39this tournament.

0:31:53 > 0:32:05And not only Novak Djokovic. He has beaten Zverev.

0:32:05 > 0:32:15beaten Zverev. That was 6-0 in the fifth set. He came from two sets to

0:32:15 > 0:32:28one down. He beat Medvedev. And the other Zverev.

0:32:35 > 0:32:41If you pull out before the event, you can keep have your prize money.

0:32:41 > 0:32:54-- half. A masterclass. One set and 4-1.

0:32:57 > 0:33:004-1. Is this a level tank or a heel injury? Row we have seen this

0:33:00 > 0:33:13before. -- is this a left ankle. We saw it at Wimbledon last year. We

0:33:13 > 0:33:21were not really noticing Marin Cilic in last year's Wimbledon final.

0:33:21 > 0:33:29Exactly.That is ingrained in the skin. There will be an under

0:33:29 > 0:33:37wrapping. They will spread.Lovely. After a long medical time-out, he

0:33:37 > 0:33:43resumed, but still clearly in pain.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32Certainly filling pressure in this match, why wouldn't you, with Roger

0:34:32 > 0:34:38Federer down the other end.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Federer down the other end. The real pressure he felt in his career

0:34:40 > 0:34:42before this was when he was competing in the Asian games in the

0:34:42 > 0:34:48doubles in 2014.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52doubles in 2014. What was on the line that was at -- was if they won

0:34:52 > 0:34:59the gold medal, him and his partner, they would be exempt from the

0:34:59 > 0:35:09mandatory 21 month military service. They won!

0:35:10 > 0:35:17They won! So he only did for weeks in the military.

0:35:17 > 0:35:21in the military.Theoretically, it could have ended his career.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24Absolutely. He said he would not possibly have played this

0:35:24 > 0:35:30tournament. He could have been in the military, doing press ups. Well

0:35:30 > 0:35:40done, sir.

0:35:44 > 0:35:49Given the state of the Korean Peninsula at the moment and of the

0:35:49 > 0:35:52tensions, being in the South Korean military is a testing position, I

0:35:52 > 0:35:56would have thought. There we are. He is here now.

0:36:18 > 0:36:23These Swedes used to do military service. And Israeli players would

0:36:23 > 0:36:29spend a year in the defence forces.

0:37:38 > 0:37:45He didn't move very well there, did he?

0:37:45 > 0:37:59he?The older man, by 15 years, schooling Hyeon Chung.

0:39:00 > 0:39:05Hyeon Chung of South Korea, trying to be the first player to reach a

0:39:05 > 0:39:14Grand Slam final on seeded since Tsonga here, ten years ago. -- not

0:39:14 > 0:39:22seeded. He just

0:39:22 > 0:39:23seeded. He just came up short against Cilic in the other

0:39:23 > 0:39:28semifinal.

0:39:28 > 0:39:37semifinal. Oh no. That is too bad. He has had the most, he has had the

0:39:37 > 0:39:46most wonderful tournament. But about to go down two sets to love macro.

0:39:46 > 0:39:51Roger Federer emerges from the semifinal and will have a repeat of

0:39:51 > 0:39:55the Wimbledon final as he takes on Marin Cilic on Sunday morning. We

0:39:55 > 0:40:03look forward to that. What a shame, the man who beat Alex macro --

0:40:03 > 0:40:08Zverev, the fourth seed, the man who beat Novak Djokovic and Medvedev,

0:40:08 > 0:40:17next generation players, unable to continue. Brilliant tournament. Take

0:40:17 > 0:40:26a bow Hyeon Chung of South Korea. He has put his country's tennis very

0:40:26 > 0:40:26much

0:40:26 > 0:40:30has put his country's tennis very much on the map.

0:40:30 > 0:40:34Roger, I think I can speak for all of us when I say we are all stunned

0:40:34 > 0:40:39at how this match concluded. I just want to get your take on how the

0:40:39 > 0:40:44match was going for you prior to this abrupt ending?Well, I thought

0:40:44 > 0:40:50the first set was, let's say, kind of normal. I couldn't tell what was

0:40:50 > 0:40:56going on with my opponent. I guess I was too focused on trying to protect

0:40:56 > 0:41:00the lead, to be honest. In the second set I started to freely was

0:41:00 > 0:41:04getting slower, playing with the blister. I know he has had a problem

0:41:04 > 0:41:09with the for some time. You don't know how bad it is, really. I have

0:41:09 > 0:41:15played with blisters in the past a lot, and it hurts a lot. Add a

0:41:15 > 0:41:20certain point you can't take it any more. There is no way you can come

0:41:20 > 0:41:24back. It is better to stop. That is why this feels bittersweet. I'm

0:41:24 > 0:41:27incredibly happy to be in the finals, but not like this. And he

0:41:27 > 0:41:32has played such a wonderful tournament. Credit to him for trying

0:41:32 > 0:41:40so hard today again. You had never played against Hyeon Chung before.

0:41:40 > 0:41:45He has had a remarkable start to his 2018. A revelation to so many. Now

0:41:45 > 0:41:49that you have plagued him for a little bit, I would like to get your

0:41:49 > 0:41:51take on what the future holds for him and what he may accomplish in

0:41:51 > 0:41:59this sport?Just alone his attitude, you couldn't tell he had a problem

0:41:59 > 0:42:03until the end. I could tell something was wrong before he took

0:42:03 > 0:42:10the injury time-out. He has great composure. I think he is going to

0:42:10 > 0:42:13be... He is already a great player. I think we are talking about next

0:42:13 > 0:42:18level excellence. We will see much more of him. Top ten for sure. The

0:42:18 > 0:42:22rest we will see. I don't want to put too much pressure on him. But he

0:42:22 > 0:42:27has done very well. I can see why you'd be the likes of Novak Djokovic

0:42:27 > 0:42:33and Sasha and all the others this week and in the past. -- why he

0:42:33 > 0:42:39beat.Year ago you came into this tournament and you had 17 majors,

0:42:39 > 0:42:45more than any man has. Now you are one match away from getting to 20 if

0:42:45 > 0:42:52you can beat Marin Cilic in the final.

0:42:52 > 0:42:56final. What would you have said if I had told you that is where you would

0:42:56 > 0:43:01be one year from last year when you start this tournament?Nice joke,

0:43:01 > 0:43:09Jim! Good joke, sir. Seriously, no, I wouldn't be thinking this way. I

0:43:09 > 0:43:14know how hard it is to win on the play, I know how hard it is to win

0:43:14 > 0:43:19any Major. It doesn't come around so easily. I was fighting so hard for

0:43:19 > 0:43:23so many years, and ran into Novak and Rafa and so many good players.

0:43:23 > 0:43:29They blocked me for a while. I don't want to say I gave up hope but I

0:43:29 > 0:43:36would have been happy with one more major. I would have taken that. Here

0:43:36 > 0:43:42we are, two more, maybe a third. One match away. Let's see what happens.

0:43:42 > 0:43:46We will look ahead now to Sunday night. A rematch of the Wimbledon

0:43:46 > 0:43:51final against Marin Cilic. He has also beaten you at the US Open. You

0:43:51 > 0:43:56know the dangers that he possesses. What do you need to do well in that

0:43:56 > 0:44:01match to get by? What does he bring to the table that can worry you?We

0:44:01 > 0:44:05saw it against Rafa and we saw it again last night against Kyle

0:44:05 > 0:44:11Edmund. He brings the power. He brings basically everything. He is a

0:44:11 > 0:44:17really nice guy. He had a similar problem that Chung had, in the

0:44:17 > 0:44:22Wimbledon final, playing with a blister. Having two days off will

0:44:22 > 0:44:27help them. We will see a fresh and ready Marin Cilic this time. On this

0:44:27 > 0:44:30kind of a court you have to play aggressive. He can bring the power.

0:44:30 > 0:44:35I'm sure he believes if he has come this far, it it means he is feeling

0:44:35 > 0:44:40good. He crushed me and that US Open final. Thanks for the memories! He

0:44:40 > 0:44:48beat me badly. I'm excited to play against him. He is a great guy. We

0:44:48 > 0:44:52won the labour couple together. We had a blast. We played together on

0:44:52 > 0:44:57vacation, believe it or not, in the Maldives a couple of months ago.I

0:44:57 > 0:45:03didn't get my invitation, it's OK. It was just the two of us. We were

0:45:03 > 0:45:07both looking for a hitting partner. We were both there. It was the

0:45:07 > 0:45:11weirdest thing. I told him that practising in the tropicals helped

0:45:11 > 0:45:14us to get to the final this time around. It was very cool. I can't

0:45:14 > 0:45:21wait.We can't wait either. Roger Federer going for a number 20 on

0:45:21 > 0:45:26Sunday night. There he is. What an entertaining

0:45:26 > 0:45:31and to a disappointing semifinal. Well done Jim Courier. Federer

0:45:31 > 0:45:35through to another major final in a match lasting just one hour and two

0:45:35 > 0:45:39minutes. Such a shame that blisters prevented Chung from being at his

0:45:39 > 0:45:42best. Ironic that it was blisters that prevented Marin Cilic from

0:45:42 > 0:45:47being at his best in Wimbledon last year. Hopefully that will not be the

0:45:47 > 0:45:50case on Sunday and we will have a final to savour. You can see it with

0:45:50 > 0:45:56us on BBC Two. John Lloyd and Andrew Castle have joined me. Andrew,

0:45:56 > 0:46:01listening to Federer yesterday, he said he has never played this guy,

0:46:01 > 0:46:05he will watch where he serves, what he does. He found the winning

0:46:05 > 0:46:10formula?He doesn't take many cues. You can see coverage of people in

0:46:10 > 0:46:16many ways now. He would have watched the Djokovic match. Engaged the

0:46:16 > 0:46:20mind, think about his opponent. And then played a brilliant first 15

0:46:20 > 0:46:25minutes of the match and absolutely put him away. It is extraordinary.

0:46:25 > 0:46:30Federer wants to play with youthful exuberance. I once asked him what it

0:46:30 > 0:46:34was like to have so much experience, and he said, sometimes I don't want

0:46:34 > 0:46:38all that experience. I know the mistakes I can make. Sometimes I

0:46:38 > 0:46:44want to go out there and feel the ball. He is beginning to do that

0:46:44 > 0:46:48again. In fact, he did do it again in the one hour of that match. It

0:46:48 > 0:46:54was quite fabulous to watch. Yes, he is studious. What an execution of an

0:46:54 > 0:46:57opponent and a game plan. He's getting older but he is moving

0:46:57 > 0:47:04better all the time, isn't he?Yeah, it is unbelievable. I would defy

0:47:04 > 0:47:08anybody to look at the table of him in his 20s and say he is not moving

0:47:08 > 0:47:12as well. Now at 36 he is moving better than then! He has added

0:47:12 > 0:47:19things to his game. That is remarkable. Today he was just

0:47:19 > 0:47:23brilliant. His shotmaking ability. They were a couple of points in this

0:47:23 > 0:47:27group we have where Chung managed to get him to feed behind the baseline.

0:47:27 > 0:47:33Other than that he was hugging the baseline. It was almost like Agassi.

0:47:33 > 0:47:38He stood in there and moved his opponent around side to side and

0:47:38 > 0:47:44took his legs away, literally. One moment you serve to him, next you

0:47:44 > 0:47:48play a half-volley and he's on the offensive. We haven't seen too many

0:47:48 > 0:47:53backends. Look at this. This is heading into big open spaces. It is

0:47:53 > 0:47:57too good. Look at this. I'm sorry, but he will not see anything better

0:47:57 > 0:48:02than that on a tennis court. He is delighted, mum is proud, and if I

0:48:02 > 0:48:08was Cilic I would be concerned. He hasn't lost a set yet. He has done

0:48:08 > 0:48:13this before. He is doing it all the time now. When he had six months off

0:48:13 > 0:48:17with a back injury, he said he would be more aggressive, keep the point

0:48:17 > 0:48:24shorter. He sees the ball so well. Exactly. When people say what is

0:48:24 > 0:48:28your game plan against Federer? There isn't one. What do you do with

0:48:28 > 0:48:34his backhand down the line. If it was a slight weakness in the old

0:48:34 > 0:48:37days, it was a slight weakness, now it is one of his main strengths.

0:48:37 > 0:48:44Absolutely brilliant.Briefly talk about Hyeon Chung. A big future. He

0:48:44 > 0:48:48has proved a lot?Very impressed with his ground strokes and how they

0:48:48 > 0:48:54were making Federer do things that he didn't want to do. I thought this

0:48:54 > 0:48:59could get close, even though Federer won the opening exchanges. He will

0:48:59 > 0:49:05be around for a long time. Him and Edmund, the big story. In Melbourne,

0:49:05 > 0:49:07although there were injuries, the two youngsters in the semifinals

0:49:07 > 0:49:11were given a bit of a tennis lesson, Chung today and Kyle Edmund

0:49:11 > 0:49:15yesterday. A hip injury hampered his play. He has a race to get fit for

0:49:15 > 0:49:19the Davis cup next week. It has been an impressive run by the

0:49:19 > 0:49:2323-year-old. He has been talking to Russell Fuller.

0:49:23 > 0:49:29In the short term I'm disappointed. I have to accept that. I didn't get

0:49:29 > 0:49:33my best out on court, for sure. But there are so many positives that I

0:49:33 > 0:49:40think override the whole two weeks that I have to focus on that and be

0:49:40 > 0:49:44really pleased with what I have done at the start of the year. Was it a

0:49:44 > 0:49:51hip problem?Yes. It is a relevant right now. When you get in this

0:49:51 > 0:49:55environment in the latter stage of a Grand Slam, you get the bug, you

0:49:55 > 0:50:01want more, you get greedy. It gives you more determination to get it

0:50:01 > 0:50:07right next time. I can handle it better and know what to expect.

0:50:07 > 0:50:14Yeah, in the short term I have got a problem with my hip. But it is what

0:50:14 > 0:50:21it is. Next week I want to be in Marbella playing. The fortnight as a

0:50:21 > 0:50:27whole, some up the experience to suddenly find yourself in the public

0:50:27 > 0:50:31eye, all sorts of articles and radio programmes being devoted to you?

0:50:31 > 0:50:37Yeah, it's been amazing, really. It's been anything from me to try

0:50:37 > 0:50:43and keep focused and keep playing tennis. That is what got me there.

0:50:43 > 0:50:49Yeah, it is a good problem to have at the end of the day. I think it is

0:50:49 > 0:50:54just good. If I continue to go up the rankings, you will get more and

0:50:54 > 0:51:00more. You have to learn to embrace it.This opens a few doors for you.

0:51:00 > 0:51:04Your ranking will be 25. You don't have to worry about qualifying

0:51:04 > 0:51:09again. You will be a seed of the Grand Slams in the near future?

0:51:09 > 0:51:16Yeah, that is true. It is good to see your ranking go up. It shows you

0:51:16 > 0:51:23are improving. Sony positives. The ranking is good, but to reach this

0:51:23 > 0:51:27stage of a Grand Slam, that is where tennis is for me. It is where you

0:51:27 > 0:51:32want to do well. It is a true test to play these best of five set

0:51:32 > 0:51:36matches and come Wright at the end a winner. That is when you know you

0:51:36 > 0:51:41have earned it. That is the challenge from me, to do it for

0:51:41 > 0:51:46several matches -- seven matches now, not five. The Davis cup captain

0:51:46 > 0:51:52will be worried, Leon Smith. He needs: next week, doesn't he?Boy,

0:51:52 > 0:51:58does he ever! It will be a tough match whatever happens. If Kyle

0:51:58 > 0:52:07doesn't play, it will be mission impossible. He should enjoy the

0:52:07 > 0:52:11challenge, going up against two very good players away on clay. What a

0:52:11 > 0:52:16great experience. Absolutely. Listening to him there. The ranking.

0:52:16 > 0:52:19That is important, to get yourself into the bigger tournaments, not

0:52:19 > 0:52:25rushing around on the lesser tournaments?Yes, he has hobbled

0:52:25 > 0:52:32around this before. When he was 40, he was getting into Indian Wells and

0:52:32 > 0:52:38Monte Carlo. But yes, certainly he is up there now. Being seeded he has

0:52:38 > 0:52:42a chance of going into the third round of Grand Slam championships. I

0:52:42 > 0:52:48personally agree with John. 16 should be seeded, not 32. It will

0:52:48 > 0:52:51make a big difference. The attention he gets, it will be difficult to see

0:52:51 > 0:52:57how he handles it. He is very shy, self-effacing. He doesn't embrace

0:52:57 > 0:53:02the limelight. He just wants to play tennis. His development is on a

0:53:02 > 0:53:05different plane. I think you will handle it OK. This apprenticeship as

0:53:05 > 0:53:10last few years. He has been the coming month few years. He will have

0:53:10 > 0:53:13to handle the limelight because it is part of the job description now,

0:53:13 > 0:53:20isn't it? You have to play the media game as well. You do. The good thing

0:53:20 > 0:53:24for him is he has been around Andy Murray quite a lot. He will have

0:53:24 > 0:53:28seen the attention that Andy Murray has got in Davis cups and other

0:53:28 > 0:53:32things. He has seen how he has handled it. Which has been superb.

0:53:32 > 0:53:36He will not be on that level yet. But in Britain now, they look at

0:53:36 > 0:53:40Kyle Edmund and think he's the next one. He will have to deal with it.

0:53:40 > 0:53:44I think he will handle it fine.We have been talking about youngsters

0:53:44 > 0:53:50making a name for themselves. Here's another. 17-year-old Aidan McCue has

0:53:50 > 0:53:53become the first British player to reach the junior semifinal since a

0:53:53 > 0:53:58certain Kyle Edmund in 2013. He has been signed by Andy Murray's agency

0:53:58 > 0:54:04and the former world number one is acting as his mentor. He dropped the

0:54:04 > 0:54:09first set against his opponent and was leading in the second set when

0:54:09 > 0:54:13the rain came down. He went on to take the second set. Sadly, he lost

0:54:13 > 0:54:19the final set 6-4. Having Andy Murray in your corner at

0:54:19 > 0:54:25the age of 17, that is not bad, is it?Can you imagine?! Goodies that?

0:54:25 > 0:54:29He has got Andy around, he is playing Grand Slam events. He is

0:54:29 > 0:54:35there for the second week, he sees how the professionals are, see is

0:54:35 > 0:54:42what it is all about. What a fabulous apprenticeship. It gets you

0:54:42 > 0:54:48into a competitive mindset doesn't it? It shows you what the future may

0:54:48 > 0:54:54hold?Absolutely. Success breeds success. How to play matters, win

0:54:54 > 0:55:00matches, how to eat, to train. The example of success is something you

0:55:00 > 0:55:06can't replicate in any the way. Katie Swann, Emilia Appelqvist...

0:55:06 > 0:55:11Willian of any time to play again? Once we know more about the recovery

0:55:11 > 0:55:15from his hip operation, we will know more. From the juniors to the

0:55:15 > 0:55:21seniors there is no guarantee. While we congratulate Aidan, the

0:55:21 > 0:55:25transition to the senior game is notoriously difficult to bridge.

0:55:25 > 0:55:29Whether it is a good idea to go out and play professional event and get

0:55:29 > 0:55:36hammered for a few years, or whether it is best to even now pursue an

0:55:36 > 0:55:39American college career, that is still a debate that you have to have

0:55:39 > 0:55:43with your family and your loved ones and with people like Gandhi.Andy

0:55:43 > 0:55:48will probably make the decision. Another result to bring you.

0:55:48 > 0:55:53More disappointment for Britain.

0:56:03 > 0:56:07Looking ahead to tomorrow, it is the ladies final. While Federer is

0:56:07 > 0:56:12chasing his 20th Grand Slam title, Simona Halep and Caroline Wozniacki

0:56:12 > 0:56:15are bidding for their first. The winner will be world number one. Not

0:56:15 > 0:56:22much at stake than! Andrew, you talk about the changing face of the men's

0:56:22 > 0:56:28game. What is happening in the women plus -- women's? Three over the last

0:56:28 > 0:56:34four finals been between women bidding for their first title. Some

0:56:34 > 0:56:37of the women's matches from the quarterfinal, they have outshone the

0:56:37 > 0:56:42men in this particular tournament. The women's tour have got these two

0:56:42 > 0:56:46fellow -- fabulous athlete into the final. One and two in the world.

0:56:46 > 0:56:49After all the talk and debate. All the chat is over and it comes down

0:56:49 > 0:56:56to this. They are superb athletes. Old counterpunches. They could be

0:56:56 > 0:57:00running a marathon. I know that Caroline has done one before. Both

0:57:00 > 0:57:05of these players, who can get on the front foot? Both supremely fit. I

0:57:05 > 0:57:10think it is a great advert for the game.It really is. Testing rallies

0:57:10 > 0:57:15we are going to see. Caroline Wozniacki suffers from nerves. We

0:57:15 > 0:57:19are going to have lots of long rallies but it is who is going to

0:57:19 > 0:57:23control the nerves. I am going with Halep. It is great one of them is

0:57:23 > 0:57:27finally going to win a Grand Slam title. It is going to be a nervous

0:57:27 > 0:57:34final.Looking forward to it. You can see it on BBC One at 1:15pm

0:57:34 > 0:57:42tomorrow. Plenty of other sports to look forward to here on the BBC.

0:58:06 > 0:58:11That is it from us. We will be back tomorrow. Thank you to Andrew and to

0:58:11 > 0:58:16John. Well we have marvelled at the youngsters making their mark in

0:58:16 > 0:58:19Melbourne, one grandmaster stands head and shoulders above the rest.

0:58:19 > 0:58:22At the age of 36 Roger Federer gets better and better.

0:58:22 > 0:58:27Goodbye.

0:58:41 > 0:58:49# FLEETWOOD MAC: Albatross.

0:58:57 > 0:59:03What a player!
