:00:24. > :00:31.This is one of the world's great outdoor events and as such it's

:00:31. > :00:35.almost entirely weather dependent. 12 months ago, it was a washout.

:00:35. > :00:39.Abandoned. What a joy to be here this year with the sun shining and

:00:39. > :00:45.the House looking magnificent, a huge crowd have been pouring in, as

:00:45. > :00:48.ever. They will be treated to the most competitive field ever, for

:00:48. > :00:53.two riders, though, even more is at stake than the big title. They're

:00:53. > :00:58.in contention for the Rolex Grand Slam and which ever win that is

:00:58. > :01:06.will take take home a cheque for 225,000. It's the ultimate big

:01:06. > :01:15.money showdown. Me and William, we are very

:01:15. > :01:20.competitive. We don't get along at all. I find it helps me a lot.

:01:20. > :01:27.Andrew Nicholson is the ultimate competitor. He thrives on a bit of

:01:27. > :01:31.needle. The William-Andrew thing is a bit of amusement. Beyond that

:01:31. > :01:40.there is a serious competition here. William Fox-Pitt may be more polite

:01:40. > :01:45.about the head-to-head but make no mistake, he wants to win.

:01:45. > :01:49.Other horses, though, and riders, can't be ignored. This is Sugar

:01:49. > :01:53.Brown Babe, one of the debutants. She will be ridden for Ireland.

:01:53. > :01:58.There are 15 nations represented, six former winners and this isn't

:01:58. > :02:02.the only one making a debut to watch out for.

:02:02. > :02:08.Because here for the very first time is the man who is currently

:02:08. > :02:11.world European and Olympic champion, Michael Jung for Germany. He will

:02:11. > :02:17.be aiming to spoil the party for Andrew and William and he is joined

:02:18. > :02:26.by three other riders from Germany's gold medal winning team.

:02:26. > :02:30.The Olympic silver medallists are out in force. Zara Phillips, Tina

:02:30. > :02:37.Cook and Nicola Wilson and Mary King.

:02:37. > :02:40.And the bronze medal team New Zealand led by Sir Mark Todd

:02:40. > :02:44.complete the Olympic medal collective.

:02:44. > :02:47.She may not have made the Olympics but she will be the last rider out

:02:47. > :02:52.on the course and Pippa Funnell has a special interest in proceedings.

:02:52. > :02:59.I think it's going to be a really, really exciting competition. I am

:02:59. > :03:07.really, really glad I am here just to see how it pans out, it's like

:03:07. > :03:12.clash of the titans and with Andrew and William and Michael. Pippa

:03:12. > :03:16.Funnell won the Grand Slam in 2003 and since then no one has managed

:03:16. > :03:19.it. This year we have a unique situation with two riders who could.

:03:19. > :03:24.They are two of the best in the world, they are great rivals. Let's

:03:24. > :03:31.hear from them both. Andrew Nicholson and William Fox-Pitt.

:03:31. > :03:35.The The Grand Slam means successive wins, in Kentucky, Burghley and

:03:35. > :03:41.Badminton in any order. It was in Kentucky a week ago Andrew was

:03:41. > :03:46.successful. To go out with a young horse doing the first full star,

:03:46. > :03:49.but he was the one I was relying on. He has a lovely brain. He let's you

:03:49. > :03:58.ride him in the dressage arena and that's what we did and things went

:03:58. > :04:05.on from there. Of course I went to try and win

:04:05. > :04:11.Kentucky, hopefully if I had won I would have stopped Andrew. This

:04:11. > :04:15.Grand Slam has been a long time in the making.

:04:15. > :04:19.This time last year we had been coming for a week and that can only

:04:19. > :04:23.have been a good thing t stops too much time to focus on it, certainly

:04:23. > :04:26.stops too much outside interests and other hype and excitement. But

:04:26. > :04:29.having said that, it's sort of done a full circle now. Everyone's built

:04:29. > :04:39.up to it. Everyone's got excited about it, which is great for the

:04:39. > :04:44.

:04:44. > :04:53.sport. Now we have to get on with Me and William, we are very very

:04:53. > :04:56.competitive and don't get along at all. I find it helps me a lot.

:04:56. > :05:00.William and Andrew thing is a bit of amusement but I think beyond

:05:00. > :05:03.that I think there's a very serious competition here.

:05:03. > :05:13.Both of them have a wealth of talented horses from which to pick.

:05:13. > :05:17.

:05:17. > :05:27.They bring two each to Badminton. would probably sway towards Norea,

:05:27. > :05:29.

:05:29. > :05:32.he keeps coming up with the goods for me. A thoroughbread. Oslo is

:05:33. > :05:36.more of a jumper, maybe towards the end he will be thinking this is a

:05:36. > :05:43.long way. He has a big heart and will plug along. Every sport needs

:05:44. > :05:48.a great rivalry. In these two eventing has it.

:05:48. > :05:52.The The publicity in New Zealand, I have done radio interviews amongst

:05:53. > :05:59.the rugby, you know that's a big step up for eventing and they've

:05:59. > :06:03.told me today it was ahead of the rugby. There is a lot of other good

:06:03. > :06:13.riders who could easily beat us. It's easy for the media to make it

:06:13. > :06:16.

:06:16. > :06:22.me and William. Michael junk Michael Jung, Jonathan Paget.

:06:22. > :06:25.There's quite a host of them. adds to the excitement, everyone is

:06:25. > :06:28.reved up by the fact there are two riders in contention which there

:06:28. > :06:34.never could have been before because of the cancellation

:06:34. > :06:41.situation. Yeah, we have to go for it and see what happens. If I can

:06:41. > :06:46.win Badminton, the Grand Slam takes care of it. With me now a man who's

:06:47. > :06:50.won this title three times at Badminton. When you look at Andrew

:06:50. > :06:54.and William and the intensity of their rivalry how good is that for

:06:54. > :06:58.the sport? There is a bit of of personal history there. For the

:06:58. > :07:01.sport it's brilliant. They're two intense riders. They're incredibly

:07:01. > :07:05.talented, the best in the world. It has to be good for the sport

:07:05. > :07:08.because it's drawing attention. They can have all the arguments and

:07:08. > :07:12.an mossity between them, as far as I am concerned bring it on for the

:07:12. > :07:16.sport. It's amazing they're as successful as they are because this

:07:16. > :07:22.is a very broad pool of talent. Take us through some of the riders

:07:22. > :07:28.from Australia and New Zealand. have Chris Burton, incredibly

:07:29. > :07:32.talented and for New Zealand Jock Paget. They're the sort of Mark

:07:32. > :07:36.Todd and William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson of the future.

:07:36. > :07:40.They're knocking on the door here. They're going to be pretty close to

:07:40. > :07:43.the big boys, if not even outdoing some of them. As far as the British

:07:43. > :07:47.riders, who would you see having a chance of finishing top ten or top

:07:47. > :07:52.five? Well, William, obviously. He has to be the hot favourite from

:07:52. > :07:56.the British point of view. Then we have Zara and High Kingdom who did

:07:56. > :08:01.a brilliant job in London and the horse for me having seen him warm-

:08:02. > :08:08.up, he looks fitter and stronger, and it's great to see Pippa Funnell

:08:08. > :08:12.back with Redesigned. He is short of match practice but no one better

:08:12. > :08:16.than Pippa to produce a horse at this level. If you were a book-

:08:16. > :08:26.maker you would make him your favourite, it's the German rider

:08:26. > :08:28.

:08:28. > :08:36.making his debut here, Michael Jung. The first time I came it was 1996.

:08:36. > :08:44.I was a young boy and it was very fantastic and it was always a dream

:08:45. > :08:51.for me to ride in Bad -- Badminton. He comes from a horse family, his

:08:51. > :08:55.father was competing in eventing. Michael is an example of of

:08:55. > :09:00.somebody all-rounded, he rides Grand Prix level dressage and show

:09:00. > :09:07.jumping. He rides top level eventing. He is as comfortable in

:09:07. > :09:12.any of those three disciplines. He isn't just a competitor, he trains

:09:12. > :09:19.the horses, so he has a great feeling for the horses themselves.

:09:19. > :09:23.This is the horse that's number one, this is Sam, the envy of all the

:09:23. > :09:26.riders, bought at an auction when only five. He is the apple of

:09:26. > :09:33.Michael's eye. He is special because he is very good in dressage,

:09:33. > :09:37.very good in cross-country and good in show jumping. That's special

:09:37. > :09:43.because normally the horse has two good disciplines and one not so

:09:43. > :09:46.good. Everybody talks about Sam and how the ideal event horse that one

:09:46. > :09:51.could imagine. Certainly he is a fantastic horse. But he is in the

:09:51. > :09:55.end a product of Michael and as people say, animals and horses

:09:55. > :10:01.become like their owners and Sam is a reflection of Michael. Michael

:10:01. > :10:10.has made him that talent. Together they have done what no one

:10:10. > :10:16.else has ever done, they are world European and Olympic champions.

:10:16. > :10:21.have every time pressure from yourself you will give your best

:10:21. > :10:26.and concentrate on competition. stays very much in his own world,

:10:26. > :10:29.focused on his own performance. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't

:10:29. > :10:34.even know this is going on because he has one thing on his mind, which

:10:34. > :10:38.is to get the best out of his horses this weekend and after that,

:10:38. > :10:42.yeah, what happens will happen. Michael and Sam got off to a

:10:43. > :10:48.fabulous start with a dressage score of 36. Amongst those watching

:10:48. > :10:52.was Olympic gold medal-winning dressage rider Laura Tomlinson.

:10:52. > :10:56.She's been discussing the performance with Lizzie Greenwood

:10:56. > :11:01.Hughes. It's trying to steer extremely fit horses designed for

:11:01. > :11:05.all of fast and fury of cross- country through a controlled

:11:05. > :11:09.dressage test that's still got challenges in it and Michael Jung

:11:09. > :11:13.did a fantastic job. He really does sit like a dressage rider in the

:11:13. > :11:17.dressage saddle and then looks incredible out cross-country and

:11:17. > :11:20.show jumping. He is really the great all-rounder. It's very

:11:21. > :11:29.impressive to watch. Even for someone who comes from a pure

:11:29. > :11:32.dressage background. Do you find yourself being super-picky? I am

:11:32. > :11:36.usually impressed, certainly with the top guys who do very well in

:11:36. > :11:40.all three phases. I am always pretty in awe of them. They're

:11:40. > :11:45.brilliant at what they do and I find it impressive to see how some

:11:46. > :11:52.of them really do sit and control the horses extremely well. So, I

:11:52. > :12:02.think it's good. We won't keep from you the action. Thank you.

:12:02. > :12:13.

:12:13. > :12:18.To confirm the final dressage That leader board will change

:12:18. > :12:24.because the riders now have to face the cross-country course and some

:12:24. > :12:29.of the fences are relikeled, the -- recycled, the timber. This was part

:12:29. > :12:38.of the Olympic Games. It's one of 30 fences on the course. To answer

:12:38. > :12:46.the major questions we have turned to four of our Olympic team members.

:12:46. > :12:53.Fences six and seven. The first big question on the course this year,

:12:53. > :12:58.have a big wide. Jumping from light into dark. Now we need to get our

:12:58. > :13:02.control and our line accurate, about stride is where the horses

:13:03. > :13:09.land and immediately take off again. After the bounce we have another

:13:09. > :13:11.third part of the combination. The key to the angled log is the

:13:11. > :13:20.accuracy of the line. The competition is not going to be won

:13:20. > :13:23.here, but it could be lost. Fence nine. The lake. You come around the

:13:23. > :13:29.corner, a big set of logs to jump over with a drop into the actual

:13:29. > :13:35.lake. Once you have landed in the lake it's then a curving line of

:13:35. > :13:40.four strides hopefully to a set of narrow brush fences. The horse has

:13:40. > :13:47.to be very accurate here, and so does the rider, to stay on a nice

:13:47. > :13:54.straight line. We go up the slope away from the lake then.

:13:54. > :13:57.Fence 16, outlander bank. Three- quarters around the course now and

:13:57. > :14:03.been galloping to this imposing bank. You have to get the horses

:14:03. > :14:06.powerful and bouncy to jump on and straight off through this hole and

:14:06. > :14:11.many horses don't like going through narrow spaces and will drop

:14:11. > :14:17.their head. You have to give them a big kick and sit tight as there is

:14:17. > :14:21.a huge drop on landing. Fence 21. HSBC marketplace. We have the

:14:21. > :14:28.option of two gates behind me. It's important to make sure the horses

:14:28. > :14:32.are really put back on to their hind leg and keep hands low. Then

:14:32. > :14:37.we have six strides towards this very narrow right-handed corner. As

:14:37. > :14:41.you can see, it's a very narrow gap to get through. Then we have a very

:14:41. > :14:47.tight turn on four strides to a left-handed corner. When I walked

:14:47. > :14:50.this I was wanting to make a much wider turn to close the door so the

:14:50. > :14:56.horses were less likely to run out but the way it walks you have to

:14:56. > :15:00.keep a tight line really encouraging them to nip that way.

:15:00. > :15:05.We have to be focused, keep the horses between hand and leg and

:15:05. > :15:15.make sure they go between the flags. The first horse we are going to see

:15:15. > :15:37.

:15:37. > :15:42.is Imperial Cavalier with the ever time riding Imperial Cavalier. The

:15:42. > :15:52.middle element is perhaps the test here. Yes, a good long gallop, but

:15:52. > :15:54.

:15:54. > :16:04.it is fence three so it comes early in the course. A lot of experience

:16:04. > :16:10.

:16:11. > :16:15.showing, but this is a big rail in the middle with no ground line.

:16:15. > :16:25.Let's have a look at the next complex, the red route is the direct

:16:25. > :16:31.

:16:31. > :16:41.route. This is quite a test. Here is Mary King, the going absolutely

:16:41. > :16:42.

:16:42. > :16:49.perfect. 11 minutes 13 is the optimum time. They are already on

:16:49. > :16:56.two minutes here. Mary is leaning back, keeping her horse off the

:16:56. > :17:05.rail, the final rail at quite an angle. Here, the Olympic gold

:17:05. > :17:10.medallist away, the first of his two rides. Leopin, in good form this

:17:11. > :17:18.season, the holder of the Olympic and the European title - the first

:17:18. > :17:24.time that has ever been done. Sets off on a decent dressage score so we

:17:24. > :17:34.will get an insight into the talents of this man. He is a real

:17:34. > :17:34.

:17:34. > :17:42.all-rounder rider. Quite a breeze, and it is a huge crowd still coming

:17:42. > :17:47.in. No jump into the water, but it can be quite spooky the way they

:17:47. > :17:53.have two approach the water, and two incredible angles over the hedges,

:17:53. > :18:00.then a quick turn to the footbridge. An enormous parallel over the

:18:00. > :18:10.ditch, then bread and butter for Mary and her horse. Now coming to

:18:10. > :18:13.

:18:13. > :18:17.the outlander bank, the enormous bank, and then the owl hole. The

:18:17. > :18:26.riders were really concerned about this fence. I don't think the horse

:18:26. > :18:33.even noticed there was an owl hole! Mary doesn't seem to be setting a

:18:33. > :18:38.fast pace at this stage in the course, nearly halfway now. Yes, but

:18:38. > :18:43.he has a big gallop stride and Mary has an inbuilt clock in her head so

:18:43. > :18:53.I wouldn't be too concerned about the time at the moment. Now at the

:18:53. > :19:00.famous late, and the red route is the direct route. Two narrow

:19:01. > :19:06.hedges, and the long route is very long. On the way out, a nice

:19:06. > :19:11.galloping stretch of this course. The long route is more difficult

:19:11. > :19:19.than the direct route so I don't think we will see anyone tackling

:19:19. > :19:29.that. Here is Leopin with Michael Jung. In the lead on his second

:19:29. > :19:39.horse, and he comes straight. was meant to be one stride, but it

:19:39. > :19:47.

:19:47. > :19:52.does walk very short. Now, at the marketplace, fence 21. Two corners,

:19:52. > :20:02.risky, plenty of chance to run out and this fence could be instrumental

:20:02. > :20:02.

:20:02. > :20:10.in the competition. Mary King on Imperial Cavalier, just setting off.

:20:10. > :20:16.It is a big right-handed corner, takes the flag out but well inside.

:20:16. > :20:26.It is important the horse's head, neck and shoulders stay inside the

:20:26. > :20:27.

:20:27. > :20:32.flag. Michael Jung of Germany, easily over. A huge spread of six

:20:32. > :20:38.foot six, concentration written all over his face, as he comes to the

:20:38. > :20:44.bank. One of the original site in Badminton in 1949, but with the owl

:20:44. > :20:51.hole which has caused discussion but they seem to be making nothing of

:20:51. > :20:55.it. William Fox-Pitt on his first ride, setting off. It would be good

:20:55. > :21:04.for him to have two rides here, a challenger for the incredible prize

:21:04. > :21:14.money. Away goes William, one of 11 riding two horses and this is the

:21:14. > :21:17.first of the two challenges for the Rolex grandslam, the biggest pot of

:21:17. > :21:24.gold for eventing, and it has attracted the biggest crowd we have

:21:24. > :21:29.seen the years here. A nice easy start, and this is the horse he

:21:29. > :21:39.hoped to ride in London, and this is the horse Mary did ride in London to

:21:39. > :21:39.

:21:39. > :21:49.be part of the medal winning team. Mary is going to be ten or 12

:21:49. > :21:58.

:21:58. > :22:01.seconds over. 12 seconds, 0.4 of a penalty for each of her penalties.

:22:01. > :22:09.This is difficult, particularly if they are beginning to get a shade

:22:09. > :22:14.wary, and here comes Michael Jung. There are some very tall trees, and

:22:14. > :22:24.there is an interesting one. What will the grand jury do? Did he

:22:24. > :22:28.present? Did he get 20? Let's look at it again. I would like to give

:22:29. > :22:34.him the benefit of the doubt. I think if he kicked he could have

:22:34. > :22:40.done it, but he was changing his mind and decided to pull the horse

:22:40. > :22:46.off. It was an exciting course to ride, the fences came thick and

:22:46. > :22:54.fast. It is not an over big course, but a lot of awkward questions

:22:54. > :23:01.starting early on at the Huntsman's close. When they are being a bit

:23:01. > :23:08.fresh like Imperial Cavalier, it was exciting riding through that. I was

:23:08. > :23:16.up on my time halfway, perhaps eased off a bit which I shouldn't have, I

:23:16. > :23:22.am getting slow in my old age! has another ride to come later, but

:23:22. > :23:28.now William Fox-Pitt on this big horse, Oslo. This would have been

:23:28. > :23:32.his chosen horse in London, but sadly not fit enough. That is a

:23:32. > :23:38.tight turn but he accelerated to work and jumped much more to the

:23:38. > :23:47.left. He should have given himself five strides before that one and

:23:47. > :23:52.that will be the favourite route. Here is Michael Jung and he has been

:23:52. > :23:59.given the 20 penalties at that staircase, but he will be inside the

:23:59. > :24:03.time and that perhaps reflects where the time will be. Remember, 11

:24:03. > :24:10.minutes 13 is the optimum time, but this man will be back at the end of

:24:10. > :24:16.cross country and that is when it will be a very tense affair. Coming

:24:16. > :24:21.to the farmyard for Williams, the big blue wagon and then offending

:24:21. > :24:31.line of five strides to know think on with a narrow back rail.

:24:31. > :24:35.

:24:35. > :24:40.Beautifully done. Michael Jung's first experience of this Badminton

:24:40. > :24:45.country course. Your horse looked very strong, did that make it

:24:45. > :24:51.difficult or could you enjoy it? fence he jumped very well, but he

:24:51. > :24:59.was so strong and had so much fun, galloping fast, and I look at my

:24:59. > :25:05.watch and I am very fast. Yes, and that is difficult, also at the last

:25:05. > :25:12.steps he jumped so much forward and also in the water, yes. It was a

:25:12. > :25:18.very nice course and the spectators always directly on the road and yes,

:25:18. > :25:28.it was very nice. Now the four times winner, Sir Mark Todd, coming to the

:25:28. > :25:42.

:25:42. > :25:52.lake on the first of his rides on the left-hand side. A big jump over

:25:52. > :25:53.

:25:53. > :25:59.the middle. There was just a little bit of a correction in the middle,

:25:59. > :26:03.which may have lost him his line. The danger of that left-hand direct

:26:03. > :26:11.route is that it is a very straight line to the corner and they do jump

:26:11. > :26:21.the first corner rather big, then it is a controlled four strides around

:26:21. > :26:22.

:26:22. > :26:31.a tight turn. You can see he was on quite a sharp angle and the horse

:26:31. > :26:41.didn't really focused on it. Then comes the second man for the

:26:41. > :26:51.

:26:51. > :26:59.grandslam pot of gold, Andrew Nicholson on his first ride, it is

:26:59. > :27:04.Avebury. It will have to be the second horse for him to try for the

:27:04. > :27:14.grandslam. He definitely slowed down after the 20 penalty points and you

:27:14. > :27:24.

:27:24. > :27:33.cannot blame him for that. He will not win on this one, and he will be

:27:33. > :27:41.relying on Parklane Hawk. Now it is the challenger from New Zealand, the

:27:41. > :27:48.one event he has never won. Oh, my word, a dog with him, luckily it has

:27:48. > :27:57.come to heal. Has that finger caused William Fox-Pitt problems on his

:27:57. > :28:01.first ride? Did you ride in the glove West Germanic yes, I did get a

:28:01. > :28:05.glove over it. It sounds like I am making an excuse but it was more of

:28:05. > :28:09.a hindrance today than it was yesterday and that gave me a

:28:09. > :28:15.surprise. He jumped and hold the reins through my fingers and that

:28:15. > :28:25.was it. You cannot really jump a corner on a long rain. Will you go

:28:25. > :28:27.

:28:27. > :28:36.out with confidence? I think so but I ride him with two reins so I don't

:28:36. > :28:42.know what I will do. Fingers crossed I don't make the same mistake again.

:28:42. > :28:48.This horse has been cheeky in the past in his youth, but he looks very

:28:48. > :28:55.professional and very established, and finding it easy. Now it is the

:28:55. > :29:00.Australian Sam Griffiths, lives down in Dorset. Very much out of luck in

:29:01. > :29:08.London with a fall on the flat but he will be determined to put that

:29:09. > :29:14.kind him. The way he goes to the lake. Mark Todd coming to the end,

:29:14. > :29:20.will he make it? He has to keep going, heading for the last but he

:29:20. > :29:30.will be over the time I reckon. He is kicking, and one second over.

:29:30. > :29:36.Pretty good from Mark Todd. Just 0.4 of a penalty to add to him. What

:29:36. > :29:43.about Sam Griffiths coming to the bank, the famous Irish bank that

:29:43. > :29:53.came to Badminton back in 1949. That is how they have been jumping it, it

:29:53. > :30:00.

:30:00. > :30:04.with the time. And he is going to set the pattern for the day.

:30:04. > :30:11.It's going to get faster and faster, I suspect. A lovely piece of

:30:11. > :30:18.judgment from a man who is absolutely the master judge of pace

:30:18. > :30:28.and Avebury comes home, ears pricked. Stays on his score and

:30:28. > :30:30.

:30:30. > :30:35.heads the leader board in the early Griffiths. Happy Times. It's about

:30:35. > :30:45.a minute 13 seconds from home on this undulating terrain. Tests out

:30:45. > :30:48.

:30:48. > :30:52.a tired horse. Happy Times is not realised it had 20 foot of rope

:30:52. > :30:56.behind it. He is a cool thing and better when things are agitating

:30:56. > :30:59.him a little bit. We had another dog later in the course, as well,

:30:59. > :31:06.which just helps them. Some horses it puts them off. He probably

:31:06. > :31:11.thinks I have a new tactic. Exactly, keep his mind on the job! You made

:31:11. > :31:15.the time look easy there. You must be looking forward to later. It's

:31:15. > :31:19.lovely to ride around here, the ground is perfect. Everyone knows

:31:20. > :31:23.you have perfect ground conditions, good weather conditions and horses

:31:23. > :31:33.skill along happily and love it. It's a credit to everyone who does

:31:33. > :31:35.

:31:35. > :31:39.coming to the final fences on the course. Over the Rolex crossing. 21

:31:39. > :31:43.seconds to get home. He is going to be quite pushed. Need a good 20

:31:44. > :31:46.seconds, if not a few more, to get home from there? He probably does

:31:47. > :31:50.need more time but he will be happy. Because this horse has had problems

:31:50. > :31:53.in the past. It was an exciting young horse and then it had a few

:31:54. > :31:57.hiccups and he's really come back with a vengeance here at Badminton.

:31:57. > :32:03.He is on the time now. He is a couple of seconds over. But I don't

:32:03. > :32:13.think that will be worrying him. 44.9 penalties. Four seconds over.

:32:13. > :32:21.

:32:21. > :32:28.as Christopher Burton comes on course with Holstein Park Leilani.

:32:29. > :32:32.This man has impressed us with his style and ability. Wasn't the

:32:32. > :32:35.smoothest I had hoped for. A couple of strides weren't perfect but he

:32:35. > :32:38.is an an experienced horse and sometimes cross-country riding is

:32:39. > :32:43.about doing what you have to do and that's what it felt like today.

:32:43. > :32:49.He's an experienced campaigner and he did a great job. He was a star.

:32:49. > :32:52.The lake looked interesting. Yeah, I just missed my stride into that!

:32:52. > :32:56.He bailed me out of trouble. Sometimes you have to do what you

:32:56. > :33:01.have to do and grit your teeth and get on with it. Luckily, he is a

:33:01. > :33:06.competitor like that himself. He really helped me out there.

:33:06. > :33:13.Another great combination for Great Britain, Nicola Wilson and

:33:13. > :33:20.Opposition Buzz. Now they're on their own trying to

:33:20. > :33:25.win the title. They've gone well through Huntsman ap close and

:33:25. > :33:30.Opposition Buzz looking in very good form.

:33:30. > :33:36.Christopher Burton, favours the left side. Christopher never moves.

:33:36. > :33:39.Regains the balance and makes the corners look like child's play.

:33:39. > :33:49.What's great about this partnership it looks effortless. Now the new

:33:49. > :33:50.

:33:50. > :34:00.star on the block for Ireland, Aoife Clarke in the Olympic team

:34:00. > :34:05.

:34:05. > :34:10.for Ireland. This is a good start Burton. That time looks as though

:34:10. > :34:14.it's going to elude him. He has had a brilliant ride around her. Very

:34:14. > :34:24.impressive. Another one to be a few seconds over the time. He goes into

:34:24. > :34:28.

:34:28. > :34:35.third position at the moment on leader board. We see Opposition

:34:35. > :34:45.Buzz, now 16 years old. Good dressage, 48.2 you can see.

:34:45. > :34:51.

:34:51. > :34:55.ever. He has been saufp great horse. -- such a great horse. Aoife Clarke,

:34:55. > :34:59.he loses the back leg! He was clever and quick thinking with his

:34:59. > :35:04.feet. Didn't get the perfect spot on there but recovered brilliantly.

:35:04. > :35:08.A good sight for Great Britain, she's now turning to the last. I

:35:08. > :35:12.don't think she's going to make it. We have had one or two who have

:35:12. > :35:22.been a few seconds over, just misjudging. Is Nicola Wilson going

:35:22. > :35:48.

:35:48. > :35:58.horses while he was in Kentucky. Let's see if the advice to inject

:35:58. > :36:03.

:36:03. > :36:08.lady who has caught the eye of the world's eventing public. She's gone

:36:09. > :36:18.very well here. First Badminton three years ago and got better and

:36:19. > :36:21.

:36:21. > :36:25.better. Away goes Stefano Brecciaroli.

:36:25. > :36:30.Never gone quick enough. Andrew really was getting him wound up and

:36:30. > :36:33.he set off at tremendous pace and got the eye in Kentucky and then

:36:33. > :36:38.didn't go fast enough. But this lady has. Ireland at the moment

:36:38. > :36:43.very much on the up under their new trainer Nick Turner. This is good

:36:43. > :36:53.news for him. She is inside the time or is haoe? She's done exactly

:36:53. > :36:54.

:36:54. > :36:59.the same as Nicola Wilson. Two That's what happened to Nicola.

:36:59. > :37:02.Ends up with one time fault. She's the leading British rider. The

:37:02. > :37:12.leader board is dominated by Australia and New Zealand.

:37:12. > :37:26.

:37:26. > :37:31.Sam Griffiths in front on Happy horse bought out of Belgium.

:37:31. > :37:39.They've been a combination now for four years and they certainly have

:37:39. > :37:45.strengthened the Australian sport - - the Italian sport the last few

:37:45. > :37:50.years. I have to say he's gone out much faster. Andrew has definitely

:37:50. > :37:54.had an effect on him. He looks fast and furious. The horse is jumping

:37:54. > :38:01.so well. Incredibly sharp. Gets away from that truck fence so

:38:01. > :38:05.quickly. Sandra Auffarth an Olympic

:38:05. > :38:09.medallist from London. Won team gold, individual bronze and

:38:09. > :38:19.certainly looks a combination that could feature here. They've set out

:38:19. > :38:37.

:38:38. > :38:42.be up on the time. He looks faster than anyone we have seen so far.

:38:42. > :38:50.Looks to have a good long stride covering the ground and Stefano

:38:50. > :38:56.looking very confident. The approach quick and that's where

:38:56. > :39:06.often you can lose time in the approach to each of these. 45

:39:06. > :39:07.

:39:07. > :39:14.rail in. An incredible drop on the landing. So quick! That's a long

:39:14. > :39:24.three strides and another long three strides and he almost point-

:39:24. > :39:28.

:39:28. > :39:31.to-point speeds over that fence. Sandra Auffarth. Picks up pace and

:39:31. > :39:35.rhythm. Well ridden. Did a lot of show jumping before she came into

:39:35. > :39:40.the sport but slotted in well indeed. Germany now hraog to be

:39:40. > :39:50.changing the -- look to be changing the powerbase of the sport. They're

:39:50. > :39:54.

:39:54. > :39:58.flying away from the lake. Just gold medal-winning team in London.

:39:58. > :40:06.Very experienced combination. She's not hanging around either as she

:40:06. > :40:11.comes out of the quarry. They're waiting at the start, former World

:40:11. > :40:15.and European champion, Zara fill independents -- Phillips on High

:40:15. > :40:19.Kingdom. They'll be next on the course.

:40:19. > :40:23.Getting Getting towards the end of the course, Sandra. Over the big

:40:23. > :40:28.table. Comes to the marketplace. Looks as though she's heading for

:40:28. > :40:37.the gate on the left. Just leaning a little bit on the bridle. Does

:40:37. > :40:47.tend to get low in front at times, very sharp in front. Another one to

:40:47. > :40:55.

:40:55. > :41:01.take the flag out but no doubt she family. This horse not great in the

:41:01. > :41:10.show jumping - picks up one early! Ingrid sits there well. She is one

:41:10. > :41:19.of the stars of equestrian sport in Germany.

:41:19. > :41:23.Stefano across that combination at This is a different picture than we

:41:23. > :41:27.have seen from this combination before. The Italian sport is

:41:27. > :41:33.beginning to develop a world-class team.

:41:33. > :41:36.This combination will be part of it. Each second that ticks by, 0.4 of a

:41:36. > :41:42.penalty to add. Will he go in front?

:41:42. > :41:47.Will he just drop back a place? Just gets home in time. He adds six

:41:47. > :41:52.penalties to his overnight score. Away goes Zara and High Kingdom. A

:41:52. > :41:56.lot of expectations on Zara and this horse. Brilliant performance

:41:56. > :42:06.in London. The horse just looks as though he is getting stronger and

:42:06. > :42:16.more developed every time I see him. She's certainly up for a good ride.

:42:16. > :42:22.

:42:22. > :42:28.Gentle introduction over the first gallop. Picture of concentration as

:42:28. > :42:38.Sandra Auffarth now at the big keeper's brush. Huge fence in front.

:42:38. > :42:41.

:42:41. > :42:45.They make it look like a pony club Alzheimer's, the charity this year

:42:45. > :42:49.at Badminton. Here are a combination that are going to be

:42:49. > :42:52.stars of the sport in the years to come, I am sure. 17 seconds to get

:42:52. > :43:02.home. This will be another inside the

:43:02. > :43:02.

:43:02. > :43:12.top of the leader board. There's one phase still to come,

:43:12. > :43:16.

:43:16. > :43:21.just to miss out. She's going to add to 1.2 time

:43:21. > :43:31.penalties but does creep away of Stefano and now Germany back to the

:43:31. > :43:45.

:43:45. > :43:55.to the outlander bank. He gallops along and can jump out at any speed.

:43:55. > :43:56.

:43:56. > :44:05.attacking and the time should be easy for this combination. He is

:44:05. > :44:15.very fast. He's got to be careful, as well, at this rail.

:44:15. > :44:17.

:44:17. > :44:23.seconds over the time. Did it jump well? He jumped amazing. It was a

:44:23. > :44:28.great feeling. It felt really easy with the horse, such a good horse.

:44:28. > :44:31.Really fun and and it the crowd and everything, perfect. You have done

:44:31. > :44:36.well at the Olympics and World Championships, where does Badminton

:44:36. > :44:41.rank in things you want to achieve? It was totally different goal for

:44:41. > :44:51.me and it was really cool to ride here and I think it was a big thing

:44:51. > :44:54.sport wants to come to Badminton once in their life and they've all

:44:54. > :44:59.come this year to make it a dramatic competition. Here is a

:44:59. > :45:04.lady who has never won here. Now with this nice horse, High kingdom.

:45:04. > :45:10.A bit quick! And hits it on the angle. She had to sit tight there

:45:10. > :45:20.but has got such a good temperament these days. Zara away to the lake.

:45:20. > :45:20.

:45:20. > :46:01.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 41 seconds

:46:01. > :46:11.effortless, as received through the village. Now it is highly kingdom,

:46:11. > :46:23.

:46:23. > :46:29.Zara Phillips at the lake. Was he focused on it? I don't think he was

:46:29. > :46:33.looking at it, and she has retired. The crowd are giving her a very

:46:33. > :46:41.appreciative applause. He looks quite keen, certainly growing into

:46:41. > :46:46.himself with strength. Zara is focused, she has the contact, but he

:46:46. > :46:56.never really looks at it, doesn't even look like he is intending to

:46:56. > :46:58.

:46:58. > :47:02.jump it. She so wants to win a Badminton title. It is Ingrid Klimke

:47:02. > :47:12.at the last, and she joins the party at the top of the leaderboard. It is

:47:12. > :47:16.

:47:16. > :47:26.getting a bigger and bigger party, Germany looking so strong. Another

:47:26. > :47:30.

:47:30. > :47:39.German, Dirk Schrade. Lovely, effortless. Such a neat little

:47:39. > :47:44.horse, I wanted to do one stride into the water but he decided easy

:47:44. > :47:51.in and out and he is very clever. He is nearly 15 so it is a big pleasure

:47:51. > :48:00.to enjoy these rides. One day I come here and I want to win for sure but

:48:00. > :48:10.this year I will be happy if I am top ten, it is true. She was second

:48:10. > :48:12.

:48:12. > :48:16.in 2002. Now we are watching another talent, Dirk Schrade. He really has

:48:16. > :48:19.got the cross-country world class. They have always been brilliant at

:48:19. > :48:29.the dressage, now they look spectacular at the cross country as

:48:29. > :48:30.

:48:30. > :48:36.well. Was that the commentators curse? I don't know. He looks like

:48:36. > :48:43.he was going for a long stride and the horse didn't quite know what he

:48:43. > :48:48.was asking for. He switches off his watch, and he is cantering into the

:48:48. > :48:56.water to get his feet wet, to make sure the horse knows what he was

:48:56. > :49:01.asking him to do and to make sure he has the confidence to do it in the

:49:01. > :49:05.future. You can see he was pushing for the long stride, and was a

:49:05. > :49:15.little bit too far off it. The horse didn't quite think he would take

:49:15. > :49:23.

:49:23. > :49:28.it. By the time he took another one, crash, and they are out. Tiana

:49:28. > :49:35.Coudray, and they have started off very well in their first attempt.

:49:35. > :49:40.Zara Phillips with me now and it wasn't to be today. No, I didn't

:49:40. > :49:48.want to ruin the grand slam. Really annoying because he was good on the

:49:48. > :49:53.dressage, and he was jumping too well. Like he was coming back to the

:49:53. > :50:03.combinations and in Huntsman's close he almost jumped it too well and

:50:03. > :50:10.

:50:10. > :50:15.rubbed the knee on the left, then on the final jump he put his head up

:50:15. > :50:21.and ran past. These days there is no point in carrying on because you can

:50:21. > :50:31.always reroute. I decided to save him for another day and try to have

:50:31. > :50:39.

:50:39. > :50:48.time in London but we have seen a lot of them in America, a very

:50:48. > :50:55.special young horse. A bandage has come loose and that could be very

:50:55. > :51:05.dangerous. It looks stretchy so hopefully he will just rip it off.

:51:05. > :51:09.

:51:09. > :51:15.Mary King with Kings Temptress, a lovely mare, homebred. This is a

:51:15. > :51:23.very big log in the middle, but it has jumped well, and Mary King looks

:51:23. > :51:33.more positive on this second ride, compared to what she started out on

:51:33. > :51:35.

:51:35. > :51:40.weight Imperial Cavalier. Tiana Coudray, looking more polished than

:51:40. > :51:46.she did in London. I just have a feeling the Olympic Games came a

:51:46. > :51:56.little early, just 24 years old, and a combination that looks like one

:51:56. > :51:59.

:52:00. > :52:09.for the future for the Americans. They did well in Kentucky last week.

:52:09. > :52:17.A very classy jumper. And a big jump, looking very impressive I have

:52:17. > :52:24.to say. This could be one to come up the leaderboard. What can Mary King

:52:24. > :52:29.do? She first competed here in 1985, and with the great Sheila Wilcox

:52:29. > :52:39.before she started, and she has been competitive ever since. And she has

:52:39. > :52:42.

:52:42. > :52:49.a daughter, Emily, who will keep the family line. This mare was a winner

:52:49. > :52:56.in Kentucky in 2011. She is looking confident. Yes, much more positive

:52:56. > :53:01.locking, and another one looking positive is Tiana Coudray. An

:53:01. > :53:09.enormous ditch in front of that hedge, but the horses just pop over

:53:09. > :53:14.it. There are seven jumping efforts in the last minute on this course so

:53:14. > :53:21.there is a lot of jumping at the end and it is important the horses keep

:53:21. > :53:30.some petrol in the tank. This horse is still full of running. I don't

:53:30. > :53:33.think she will get there, but she will not be much over it. The new

:53:33. > :53:43.manager is here and certainly inspiring the Americans to greater

:53:43. > :53:46.

:53:46. > :53:56.things, and they need it, as they turn into the last. 45.3 and this

:53:56. > :54:03.American is in with her best. Now it is the second ride for Sam

:54:03. > :54:13.Griffiths, now with this young horse at the hollow. This is one for the

:54:13. > :54:22.

:54:22. > :54:26.future, only ten years old. Look at that crowd. This is the best spot on

:54:26. > :54:30.the cross-country course, right next to the lake.

:54:31. > :54:40.I am standing next to Corel, how long have you been coming to

:54:40. > :54:47.Badminton? Nine years, I enjoy the horses. It is really thrilling. What

:54:47. > :54:52.do you like about coming here? Absolutely everything, watching a

:54:52. > :54:58.mixture of cross-country and a bit of the dressage and everything.

:54:58. > :55:05.long have you been coming? It is my first year but he has been coming

:55:05. > :55:15.for the last nine years or so. you support particular riders?

:55:15. > :55:18.Always on the British team. We are supportive for whoever wins it.

:55:18. > :55:24.Everyone is very friendly because you end up sitting next to people

:55:24. > :55:29.you have never met before. They are enjoying themselves and we are going

:55:29. > :55:39.to take you back out onto the course now. It is all part of the Olympic

:55:39. > :55:39.

:55:39. > :55:43.legacy, more and more interest in the equestrian sport. Here is Mary

:55:43. > :55:52.King, she so desperately wanted the gold at the Olympics but it didn't

:55:52. > :55:58.happen. Here she is with Kings Temptress. Yes, I homebred mare,

:55:58. > :56:07.which makes it so much more special when you breed them right from the

:56:07. > :56:13.word go. That is debatable. To the side of that flag. My first instinct

:56:13. > :56:18.is possibly to the wrong side. That will be reviewed by the grand jury.

:56:18. > :56:23.I would have to say the horse was the wrong side of that flight and it

:56:23. > :56:29.is an interesting one. Mary has no choice but to keep going unless

:56:29. > :56:38.somebody calls her back. She will have to put that out of her mind as

:56:38. > :56:42.she continues. Which way will they go? Here is some Griffiths's second

:56:42. > :56:52.ride, and a good performance for a quite inexperienced horse at this

:56:52. > :56:53.

:56:53. > :57:03.level. Sam Griffiths has had a good day. A very popular competitor based

:57:03. > :57:03.

:57:03. > :57:08.here in Britain. Now, Mary King is being stopped. The jury have

:57:08. > :57:16.adjudicated that Mary went the wrong side of the flag with Kings

:57:16. > :57:21.Temptress, and here we can see it again. Yes, the horse's head, neck

:57:21. > :57:31.and shoulders definitely the wrong side of the flag. There was no real

:57:31. > :57:35.

:57:35. > :57:45.doubt. This is Jock Paget, the outstanding young jockey from New

:57:45. > :57:57.

:57:57. > :58:05.Zealand. He has risen to the top of the world rankings. Now Tina Cook

:58:05. > :58:12.and Miners Frolic, has to be the most glamorous horse I was going to

:58:12. > :58:18.say! Leaves his back legs on it, but it hasn't affected the flow. You can

:58:18. > :58:22.see a little sliding over the fence. You can see her driving the horse to

:58:22. > :58:32.the fence and he jumps the first part beautifully and then just picks

:58:32. > :58:36.

:58:36. > :58:45.up. This is the combination that everybody has to beat - Michael

:58:45. > :58:55.Jung, the leader after the dressage. Could they win Badminton

:58:55. > :58:55.

:58:55. > :58:59.at their very first attempt? We are with Jock Paget, a man now based

:58:59. > :59:05.with Mark Todd and has a team of horses but only came to the sport

:59:05. > :59:10.when he was 18 and has very quickly risen to the top. He was an

:59:10. > :59:15.apprentice bricklayer in Australia for some time, but now he is at the

:59:15. > :59:23.top of the world rankings. Incidentally, we are getting rumours

:59:23. > :59:29.of a crowd of 150,000, and that is a record. They have come to watch this

:59:29. > :59:36.man. Olympic, world, European champion, never been done before on

:59:36. > :59:40.the horse that he has won all of those titles on, and this is the one

:59:40. > :59:48.man who could spoil the party for that Rolex grand slam for either

:59:48. > :59:58.William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson. Michael Jung on course.

:59:58. > :00:29.

:00:29. > :00:39.Just watch him. You will see the reason why.

:00:39. > :00:49.

:00:49. > :00:54.Classic start for the Germans. hassle to him.

:00:54. > :00:59.Michael Jung at the huntsman close, it's caused a little bit of trouble.

:00:59. > :01:08.That angled log has had two or three that's tumbled.

:01:08. > :01:13.Very good judge of pace. This man is technically absolutely brilliant.

:01:13. > :01:23.Tina flying into the arena. She's got to keep going. You can't just

:01:23. > :01:23.

:01:23. > :01:30.spend too much time sitting up for Absolutely spot on. How accurate

:01:31. > :01:40.can you get? Badminton hasn't always been Tina's lucky venue but

:01:40. > :01:49.She's not going to feature in the top ten quite, maybe just. But this

:01:49. > :01:53.man certainly could. New Zealand's Jock Paget. And

:01:53. > :01:57.Clifton Promise. We saw him on the approach, an enormous jump through

:01:57. > :02:02.that. Just on the approach having a check of his watch. Making sure he

:02:02. > :02:06.is up on time. That was a brilliant jump there. Almost the bigger the

:02:06. > :02:09.jump, the more impressive the jump the more the horses are punished

:02:10. > :02:19.because they land at the bottom of that steep bank. It hasn't upset

:02:20. > :02:50.

:02:50. > :02:55.the lake. Michael Jung and Sam. He's struggling! How did he get

:02:55. > :03:00.that line back? Amazing! He can just do no wrong at the

:03:00. > :03:06.moment, this guy. This was very, very quick reaction from the horse

:03:06. > :03:09.and the rider. You can see the left leg is left behind. The hind legs

:03:09. > :03:16.go newspaper the air. Phaoeugle is leaning back, trying to get control

:03:16. > :03:20.and grabs the reins. Sam isn't even looking and oh, there it is, you

:03:20. > :03:24.want me to jump that? How pwhreul kwrapbt -- brilliant. That's a

:03:24. > :03:28.classic piece of saving riding, correcting riding, whatever you

:03:29. > :03:33.want to call it. Riding by the seat of the pants! Good old-fashioned

:03:33. > :03:37.stuff. Now The Staircase for Clifton Promise. Another sequence

:03:37. > :03:43.of fences that's caused disappointments for some. What a

:03:43. > :03:46.quick reaction over that second step.

:03:46. > :03:56.Absolutely cat-like. This combination are working as a great

:03:56. > :03:59.

:03:59. > :04:03.team. That's Clifton Promise. This first element. Quick thinking and

:04:03. > :04:13.Michael's position never changes. It keeps the horse in balance.

:04:13. > :04:14.

:04:14. > :04:21.I say, it's a little chancy. This man is so cool. And indeed so is

:04:21. > :04:27.this man, jock Paget. -- Jock. It's another young Mark Todd in the

:04:27. > :04:37.making, surely. He could go into the lead. Jung is out on the course,

:04:37. > :04:41.

:04:41. > :04:45.he's being as quick as he can and as soon as it's over - over the

:04:45. > :04:55.Rolex fence and he accelerates away. It's going to be close.

:04:55. > :05:05.

:05:05. > :05:10.This is another one inside the time, who's misjudged it? One second

:05:10. > :05:14.inside. And he is the new leader. There is a real battle between

:05:14. > :05:18.Germany and New Zealand at the moment. Remember, I would think

:05:18. > :05:28.Jock will be off quickly to be watching Michael Jung.

:05:28. > :05:39.

:05:39. > :05:43.hiccup at the lake. Not the best at the pond. But still looks very

:05:43. > :05:53.impressive. He is so correct in his technique, this horse. It's no

:05:53. > :06:01.

:06:01. > :06:05.wonder he is good at all three of problems today, the odd hiccup.

:06:05. > :06:09.He could be in the arena at home, the way he is jumping those. I have

:06:09. > :06:13.been with the horse a long time now and know him quite well and he

:06:13. > :06:16.knows me. Always starts off a little bit nervous and then settles

:06:16. > :06:20.in and gets quite brave and almost too brave to the end but gives you

:06:20. > :06:22.a fantastic feeling. Show jumps his way around, he is beautiful.

:06:22. > :06:27.Terrifically strong New Zealand challenge here. How much does it

:06:27. > :06:31.mean to you to be not just part of it but at the head of it? Well, I

:06:31. > :06:36.would really like to win this event, that's why I came and I have been

:06:36. > :06:42.preparing all year. It's great to have all the kiwis around us, as

:06:42. > :06:48.well. If I don't win I would like a kiwi to come first. They're

:06:48. > :06:51.certainly trying. Here is a man who would like to stop them. The

:06:51. > :06:59.prolific William Fox-Pitt on the ride that matters, can he put

:06:59. > :07:05.himself in with a chance of winning the 65,000 first prize? And put

:07:05. > :07:10.himself in for the pot of gold for the Rolex Grand Slam? But we are

:07:10. > :07:14.back with Jung. He can spoil the party for Fox-Pitt and Nicholson.

:07:14. > :07:18.What was so good about that table because he never altered the rhythm.

:07:18. > :07:22.The stride pattern stayed the same and the horse gave a brilliant jump.

:07:22. > :07:28.He looks as though he is going to the right gate. But he is not

:07:28. > :07:32.taking the long route. He's cut across that 90 degree corner and

:07:32. > :07:40.got the four strides. We have only seen about two horses do that the

:07:40. > :07:50.whole day. I have to say for me it would be the favoured route. Fox-

:07:50. > :08:07.

:08:07. > :08:10.away stylishly and well. Michael Jung and Sam. He's decided to take

:08:10. > :08:14.the alternative. How sensible is that? Is he quick enough? Is he

:08:14. > :08:20.going to do the time and get away with that long route? It's got rid

:08:20. > :08:30.of the risk. He's actually kept a good pace up and probably got ahead

:08:30. > :08:31.

:08:31. > :08:41.of the clock. Now the tricky sequence of fences

:08:41. > :08:47.

:08:47. > :08:51.wonderful athleticism there of the thoroughbreds.

:08:51. > :09:01.Look at the stride on this horse. That's the end of the course, at

:09:01. > :09:07.

:09:07. > :09:11.by going the long route at the staircase.

:09:11. > :09:15.It is worth saying that the man is always in that balance, that the

:09:15. > :09:20.worse is comfortable and able to use its wonderful athletic skills

:09:20. > :09:24.to the full advantage, both by galloping along and by jumping and

:09:24. > :09:33.they take no more out of themselves, either horse or rider, wherever

:09:33. > :09:38.they're going. It is the sure way to save energy, keep them in a good

:09:38. > :09:42.rhythm. He never alters rhythm. He is galloping easily and jumping

:09:42. > :09:48.brilliantly. He has had hiccups on the course, but it's looked so

:09:48. > :09:58.smooth and easy. The majority of it. Look at the time, one of the

:09:58. > :10:00.

:10:00. > :10:04.We are privileged to be watching one of the best combinations we

:10:05. > :10:11.have seen in this sport for years and years. And could be ever. He's

:10:11. > :10:16.cruised around. He's maintained his position on 36. He was the

:10:16. > :10:20.overnight leader and he will stay there. Of course, there's one phase

:10:20. > :10:24.left, the show jumping. Can this man close within a fence and still

:10:24. > :10:32.keep that challenge up, both for his second title and also for that

:10:32. > :10:36.Grand Slam? William, who won in 2004, but this could be a much more

:10:36. > :10:40.valuable win for William, if he can do it. We were talking about rhythm

:10:40. > :10:43.and there's no one better at keeping a rhythm and what's

:10:43. > :10:48.incredible about William and his horse is he never looks as though

:10:48. > :10:54.he is in a hurry and he's always there or thereabouts on the time.

:10:54. > :11:04.He made that look like child's play. Looks as though he has all the time

:11:04. > :11:06.

:11:06. > :11:10.pressure on you, you were the leader. Hairy moment at the lake,

:11:10. > :11:18.and all that steering! Yeah, I think that's cross-country, not

:11:18. > :11:21.everything is perfect. But my horse do a really well job. After the

:11:21. > :11:27.mistake he was directly concentrating and listen to me,

:11:27. > :11:31.what we do now and perfect. He was so fresh in the end I do a little

:11:32. > :11:36.bit and he go forward, amazing horse.

:11:36. > :11:44.Is the balance of power in the sport changing? Michael Jung

:11:44. > :11:48.certainly did make his attempt to do so as William comes to the pond.

:11:48. > :11:58.Not perhaps the neatest, but safe and that's what matters. Looks to

:11:58. > :12:16.

:12:16. > :12:23.has two reins on this horse. How is it affecting him? So far it's not

:12:23. > :12:29.been an issue. The problem must be when he jumps that down, he has to

:12:29. > :12:33.slip the reins through and gather them up again. If that finger the

:12:33. > :12:37.the isn't working properly it will have an effect. Like all great

:12:37. > :12:47.competitors, he can put the pain out of the head and get on with the

:12:47. > :12:56.

:12:56. > :13:04.William held him off that fence. He got a little close. The finger is

:13:04. > :13:12.working. Certainly it. The clock is looking reasonable. Mark Todd and

:13:12. > :13:17.his second ride, Ravenstar. New for him.

:13:17. > :13:23.He's got a great catch ride record here. Didn't feature too well in

:13:23. > :13:28.the dressage. How lucky New Zealand are to have

:13:28. > :13:33.two supreme horsemen as Todd and Nicholson, still at their very best

:13:33. > :13:37.and helping the younger generation, as well. The table towards the end

:13:37. > :13:42.of the track for William. A huge jump there. You can see the quality

:13:42. > :13:52.of this horse when he is galloping. He opens up. Looking at the clock

:13:52. > :13:54.

:13:54. > :14:02.there, I would say he is in pretty he is taking the long route. He is

:14:02. > :14:05.obviously concerned having had that whoopsy earlier on. He is up on the

:14:05. > :14:14.clock. He has to keep galloping to make sure he makes it. That's

:14:14. > :14:18.probably a sensible move for William.

:14:18. > :14:21.Coming down through the dip to the steps.

:14:21. > :14:25.The great thing here is to be able to control what power you have, if

:14:25. > :14:29.you are tired you have to hold it together and push. If you have got

:14:29. > :14:36.too much holding, because the distance between the two steps and

:14:36. > :14:46.he jumps a long way out is tight, but beautifully - again looks to be

:14:46. > :14:58.

:14:58. > :15:04.Four-times winner and the reigning champion, won that in 2011. We go

:15:04. > :15:08.back to William and Parklane Hawk at the village. Getting a little

:15:08. > :15:18.strong there and William is having to keep hold of him. He needs those

:15:18. > :15:22.

:15:22. > :15:29.two reins. And the fingers, too! Waiting in the wings, the other man

:15:29. > :15:39.who wants that Rolex grand slam and the 350,000 American dollars. When

:15:39. > :15:48.

:15:48. > :15:51.Philip won it, it was 250,000 American dollars. This New Zealand

:15:51. > :16:00.Thoroughbred ex-racehorse looks superb and he is wasting no time at

:16:00. > :16:07.all. He will not be waving at the public and not getting the time.

:16:07. > :16:13.What we have seen in Badminton 2013, dare I suggest, it is more

:16:13. > :16:18.thoroughbreds taking part at the top level of the sport. I am all in

:16:18. > :16:22.favour of that. You cannot beat a good Thoroughbred. When the sport

:16:22. > :16:29.changed and we got rid of the steeplechase, there was talk about

:16:29. > :16:33.different types of horses. Look at the time, absolutely brilliant, into

:16:33. > :16:39.third place, knocking on the door and putting pressure on Michael

:16:39. > :16:49.Jung. He is closer to the optimum time, so is Michael Jung takes

:16:49. > :16:50.

:16:50. > :16:57.offence down and William jumps clear, Michael will be ahead. This

:16:57. > :17:03.is a man more focused than ever, always wanting to improve, and

:17:03. > :17:08.riding better than ever. He was unlucky in the Olympic Games to

:17:08. > :17:12.finish in fourth place just out of the medals individually, one team

:17:12. > :17:22.bronze and they were thrilled with that, but this man is now riding

:17:22. > :17:49.

:17:49. > :17:51.that. That really lifted spirits and my finger didn't get in the way too

:17:51. > :17:54.much because he is very strong. I was very aware Michael Jung would

:17:54. > :17:57.canter around with his eyes closed as he always does, so I thought I

:17:57. > :18:00.need to cut this is fine as I can do. You have got to be inside

:18:00. > :18:03.because I know that Andrew Nicholson is 0.2 behind me so there is no

:18:03. > :18:13.leeway. What a fantastic climax for everyone watching, not so great for

:18:13. > :18:20.us! The man is absolutely right. After the dressage, 0.2 of the

:18:20. > :18:30.penalty behind, and that is just nothing. Nereo, the horse that he

:18:30. > :18:36.

:18:36. > :18:46.won with in the world are -- equestrian event. Here is Mark

:18:46. > :19:01.

:19:01. > :19:11.toured -- Mark Todd with Ravenstar. He is as enthusiastic as ever, based

:19:11. > :19:20.near Swindon. Andrew Nicholson comes through Huntsman's close. A big

:19:20. > :19:30.jump, and he captures that knee. We have seen a couple on the floor by

:19:30. > :19:34.

:19:34. > :19:41.capturing that left-hand knee, but Andrew never moves. This is the

:19:41. > :19:49.best-known three-day event in the world, and it is providing a classic

:19:49. > :19:54.as Mark Todd finishes. A huge crowd here for the final stages and it

:19:54. > :20:04.creates such a good atmosphere. This is the famous Badminton house, the

:20:04. > :20:26.

:20:26. > :20:36.backdrop for all of those years to do that, and how spectacular was

:20:36. > :20:41.it? And saving time. Such a strong position in the saddle, gives the

:20:41. > :20:51.horse so much confidence and that is what it is all about. Here is the

:20:51. > :20:57.

:20:58. > :21:07.lady who has won the Rolex grand slam, that was back in 2003. Pippa

:21:07. > :21:12.Funnell, with Redesigned, and comes here with a lack of match practice.

:21:12. > :21:22.He does, but you couldn't have a more experienced rider on top to

:21:22. > :21:24.

:21:24. > :21:34.help him. Laura Collett, going on the right, about to take the longer

:21:34. > :21:36.

:21:36. > :21:40.route. She has had a good ride round with him, and playing it safe.

:21:40. > :21:49.Funnell, without doubt one of the ladies of the sport, European

:21:49. > :21:57.champion twice, first in 1999. On this very big, capable chestnut

:21:57. > :22:07.horse. If she can go clear inside the time, and that is what she means

:22:07. > :22:11.

:22:11. > :22:17.to do if she can, she will be taking on these folk. Andrew Nicholson on

:22:17. > :22:24.Nereo. Andrew Nicholson with his now famous goggles, very distinctive and

:22:24. > :22:31.totally focused. A little tap on the shoulder just to open up for the

:22:31. > :22:40.fence. If they jump right-handed there is a risk of landing in the

:22:40. > :22:50.ditch and it is very smelly, isn't it? I do remember! Michael Young's

:22:50. > :22:55.

:22:55. > :23:00.home, 36, cannot be beaten. William Fox-Pitt home on the fence with a

:23:00. > :23:09.better optimum time than Michael Jung. Andrew goes clear, he will be

:23:09. > :23:16.in fourth place, and he is flying easily. He takes the tightest line,

:23:16. > :23:26.turning into that beam he was almost underneath the tree. He shaves every

:23:26. > :23:28.

:23:28. > :23:38.second of the course he can. And the dog, if you remember. He would take

:23:38. > :23:40.

:23:40. > :23:50.that home with him and not even notice! This is certainly one of the

:23:50. > :24:04.

:24:04. > :24:11.future stars, Laura Collett. Pippa Funnell with Redesigned, and he is

:24:11. > :24:18.in great form. He did a brilliant dressage test, looking great at the

:24:18. > :24:27.lake. Owned by Roger and Denise Lincoln, who owned one of her other

:24:27. > :24:34.great rides. The owners are so important, as Nereo comes to the

:24:34. > :24:39.marketplace. He got the line no problem at all, and there is no one

:24:40. > :24:49.who knows how important the owners are to them in this sport than the

:24:50. > :24:52.

:24:52. > :25:02.owner of this Spanish bred horse. This is certainly one of the best.

:25:02. > :25:13.

:25:13. > :25:23.Now, the steps. Just a slight little peck, but perfect really. Pippa

:25:23. > :25:36.

:25:36. > :25:46.Funnell, as good as anyone through since 1980, came here to groom for

:25:46. > :25:51.

:25:51. > :25:57.Mark Todd and then became a big star in his own right. Now only 500

:25:57. > :26:03.metres from home and looking good on the clock. Looking very impressive

:26:03. > :26:07.on the clock, and no one has better judgement on time and speed across

:26:07. > :26:12.country than Andrew, but we have been witnessing some incredible

:26:12. > :26:21.riding today at Badminton. The absolute top of the game, and the

:26:21. > :26:26.riders have not disappointed us in any way. One has to say, as Andrew

:26:26. > :26:30.comes towards home, the course designer has done a very good job.

:26:30. > :26:35.Lots of little mistakes all around this course, it is for a world-class

:26:35. > :26:40.field, not easy to do. Many thought it was perhaps not the biggest

:26:40. > :26:49.Badminton they have ever seen but it still provided the competition and

:26:49. > :26:58.that is what matters. Beautifully home, seven seconds. Stays on his

:26:58. > :27:05.dressage to go in fourth place, four of them with 40.2 covering the top

:27:05. > :27:15.four. There could be drama tomorrow with the showjumping. Pippa

:27:15. > :27:15.

:27:15. > :27:22.Funnell... Oh, no! He wasn't looking. Is that a result of the

:27:22. > :27:28.lack of match practice? Needing the outing? He jumped the steps as well

:27:28. > :27:38.as anyone, his head is a little high and he is not really focused on it.

:27:38. > :27:41.

:27:41. > :27:46.A little bit like Zara at the lake. He is superb to ride, he pulled very

:27:47. > :27:53.hard in the first few minutes which he doesn't do normally but I think

:27:53. > :28:02.he got quite wound up with the crowd, quite rightly, and making a

:28:02. > :28:06.racket didn't help. It just made me hold and pulse a bit more. What

:28:07. > :28:16.realistically do you think now? day left, what was I after the

:28:17. > :28:17.

:28:17. > :28:24.dressage? In fifth place? Confidence, I have to be, don't I? I

:28:24. > :28:29.moved up last season, and some of the riders who were in front of me

:28:29. > :28:33.are behind me today. We will see what happens. Many people in the

:28:33. > :28:43.crowd would have loved to have seen this lady in the mix but it is not

:28:43. > :28:45.

:28:45. > :28:48.to be. Will this combination be part of the European Championships? At

:28:48. > :28:58.the moment only one British competitor in the top ten and you

:28:58. > :28:59.

:28:59. > :29:03.have to wonder how the balance is changing, as Pippa comes to the

:29:03. > :29:13.last. I don't think she will quite get home but that is not surprising

:29:13. > :29:18.

:29:18. > :29:28.after that problem with the steps. Disappointment for her, but we have

:29:28. > :29:33.

:29:33. > :29:43.a very international leaderboard. Michael Jung, head -- in the lead.

:29:43. > :29:43.

:29:43. > :29:53.Pippa Funnell, here alongside me, and just not your competition this

:29:53. > :29:57.year. No, but it was quite a task getting the horse here. He has not

:29:57. > :30:03.had many runs in the last two years and when it is not going your way,

:30:03. > :30:10.it is not going your way. competition is very tight at the

:30:10. > :30:15.top. It was always going to be Clash of the Titans, and what better way.

:30:15. > :30:24.We all came here expecting it to be between Michael Jung, William

:30:24. > :30:29.Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson, but we mustn't forget Jock Paget.

:30:29. > :30:35.think William Fox-Pitt and Andrew Nicholson are too far off the pace?

:30:36. > :30:41.I think they could still do it. Either of them, if they could do it,

:30:41. > :30:45.they are two of the top horse men in the world and I think it does come

:30:45. > :30:55.down to Michael Jung. They will be going in with a little less pressure

:30:55. > :31:01.because they have got to put the pressure on Michael. If he does win,

:31:01. > :31:04.he will be the first German to win here at Badminton and he may be

:31:04. > :31:14.looking back at this moment at the lake as the time when it went

:31:14. > :31:25.

:31:26. > :31:30.horribly wrong or what won him the gives him freedom. He never

:31:30. > :31:33.pwupblgs. -- budges. It's when things go wrong how quick you react

:31:33. > :31:36.and he reacted really quickly. Andrew Nicholson putting pressure

:31:36. > :31:39.on, you heard his interview and he says even though he has three

:31:39. > :31:46.riders between him and the lead position he says I am feeling

:31:46. > :31:55.confident. He has two horses in the top ten and Aveb rurbgs Aveburies

:31:55. > :31:59.had already jumped. Both bits of that parallel went and slow on time.

:31:59. > :32:03.The time you have to keep plugging on, you have to keep quite tight

:32:03. > :32:07.around the corners and you have to remember that so much - we have

:32:07. > :32:11.seen a few get silly little time faults. You have to keep moving,

:32:11. > :32:16.which is which is easier said than done when you have so much pressure

:32:16. > :32:20.heaped on you. They're saying this is one of the toughest courses ever

:32:20. > :32:25.built at Badminton and makes it hard for horses that have been

:32:25. > :32:35.cross-country yesterday and those that have gone quick on fast ground.

:32:35. > :32:38.

:32:38. > :32:43.part of a second over the time of 86 seconds and you pick up another

:32:43. > :32:47.penalty point. That could end up being absolutely crucial. It always,

:32:47. > :32:50.and you found it this morning, it's difficult, and we are seeing Ingrid

:32:50. > :32:54.now, one of three Germans in the top ten, it's difficult to jump

:32:54. > :32:59.clear in the third phase of a three-day event. I think, depends

:32:59. > :33:04.what you are sat on, but also the ground yesterday encouraged horses

:33:04. > :33:08.to run quick so some are feeling tired. Then there are always - the

:33:08. > :33:12.last day depends how they come out and we have seen horses jump super

:33:12. > :33:17.rounds. My horse definitely is lacking match practice and he was

:33:17. > :33:21.body weary. I think the top guys will still be doing pretty good job.

:33:21. > :33:26.Ingrid was so bubbly yesterday after her cross-country round.

:33:26. > :33:31.Already one down here. Let's join Ian and Mike.

:33:31. > :33:41.Yes, one down. This is not her strong phase.

:33:41. > :33:49.

:33:49. > :33:54.On 49, already dropped down two Show jumping is so important these

:33:54. > :33:58.days, Ian. It certainly is. It's a question of which fence - that's

:33:58. > :34:02.the first fence Ingrid has jumped that the horse hasn't rattled. Only

:34:02. > :34:12.one down. Three jumps to go. It has been expensive in the past

:34:12. > :34:19.

:34:19. > :34:21.Didn't jump in the final individual in London because she had

:34:21. > :34:30.disappointment in the past. Again she's been second here before but

:34:30. > :34:34.it's two down, eight to hand and eight - eight to add and finished

:34:34. > :34:39.on 53. Rattled a bit the double and coming to the last, should have

:34:39. > :34:46.jumped it, but drifted left and kicked it out. Actually, for him

:34:46. > :34:56.two down is not a bad round. Capacity audience. Absolutely

:34:56. > :34:58.

:34:58. > :35:04.gripped by this final session. That wonderful trophy and now the turn

:35:04. > :35:14.of Sam Griffiths for Australia. One Australian in the top ten. Been

:35:14. > :35:35.

:35:35. > :35:41.third and fourth in the past with down at all with Happy Times. This

:35:41. > :35:47.now is crucial. It is crucial. He has had his moments in the show

:35:47. > :35:53.jumping, Happy Times. Brilliant cross-country yesterday. A nice

:35:53. > :35:57.introduction. A vertical the first fence, quite upright and then big

:35:57. > :36:04.wide oxer and then slightly downhill slope, six strides to the

:36:04. > :36:14.double. That's a temptation, running down the hill they get a

:36:14. > :36:31.

:36:31. > :36:41.little bit free. Vittoria Panizzon you are up there with the leaders.

:36:41. > :36:41.

:36:41. > :36:45.And challenging for a good placing. The time is tight. 86 seconds

:36:45. > :36:48.allowed, you have to keep going and travelling. With a horse that's not

:36:48. > :36:53.always the most careful, you want to take your time and get the

:36:53. > :36:58.striding absolutely spot on and help the horse. If do you that, -

:36:58. > :37:08.oh, rattle! You You suffer the time penalties, if you do that. Jumps

:37:08. > :37:13.

:37:13. > :37:17.the last. It's eight to add. He drops down. 15 places. It's that

:37:17. > :37:22.give. -- it's that expensive. So, down in the ring with all the

:37:22. > :37:26.exciting action is Claire. It's interesting back stage and

:37:26. > :37:32.watching the top riders warming up. Andrew Nicholson there. William

:37:32. > :37:37.Fox-Pitt in the distance, you see the long tall back. And Pippa, what

:37:37. > :37:42.did you say to William? He is a great friend of yours and team-mate.

:37:42. > :37:46.I said to him earlier what I thought when I did it, what will be

:37:46. > :37:49.will be, what's meant to be. He has to get out there and I feel it's

:37:50. > :37:56.down to fate. He is either meant to win it or not and that's what I

:37:57. > :38:02.said. He is very calm, he is very - seems laidback. Andrew Nicholson

:38:02. > :38:05.likes to wind everybody up and make them feel the tension, he thrives

:38:05. > :38:10.on it. It's known in the eventing world that they're great rivals,

:38:10. > :38:20.the two of them. It will be interesting to see what will unfold.

:38:20. > :38:41.

:38:41. > :38:45.Stefano Brecciaroli. 42.8. He did lie in second place

:38:45. > :38:50.behind Michael Jung after the dressage. Incidentally, I was

:38:50. > :38:56.mentioning with Vittoria how she's been climbing. She represents Italy,

:38:56. > :39:02.of course. Not only her, because Aoife Clarke, for Ireland, had one

:39:02. > :39:11.time fault and she has come up 14 places, as well. At the moment

:39:11. > :39:17.first and second with these six to jump. Italy now.

:39:17. > :39:25.An enormous amount of pressure on Stefano. He was so impressive

:39:25. > :39:35.yesterday. Has the horse kept enough spring left in those legs?

:39:35. > :39:44.

:39:44. > :39:50.It Looked it over that big wide More One Show fence but one -- - he

:39:50. > :39:56.can't afford to have a fence down. One against will certainly put him

:39:56. > :40:00.down at least one place. Actually he stays where he is, but

:40:00. > :40:04.another one will drop him down four places.

:40:04. > :40:08.The horse is jumping really well. I was surprised he dropped on the

:40:08. > :40:18.back bar. But it's over a water ditch so he may have had a little

:40:18. > :40:22.look and hopefully that's kept the horse sharp. Getting a little wild.

:40:22. > :40:27.Wonder if Andrew has been at him to keep up the speed. He is not

:40:27. > :40:37.hanging around in there. No doubt Andrew has been warming him up,

:40:37. > :40:42.

:40:42. > :40:47.6th place with one down. Here is a combination we are going to see a

:40:48. > :40:54.lot more of in the world of eventing. The Duchess of Cornwall

:40:54. > :41:04.one of those enjoying the final dramatic stages of this show

:41:04. > :41:04.

:41:04. > :41:09.jumping phase for Badminton 2013. Stefano is trying everything here.

:41:09. > :41:13.He is jumping himself up into the air. Watch him here, gets quite

:41:13. > :41:19.high with the legs. The horse is trying. Disappointing one down but

:41:19. > :41:23.I should think he will be happy with this result. No doubt at all

:41:23. > :41:27.Italy looking a much stronger nation in the world of eventing

:41:27. > :41:31.after Badminton this year, than they were before.

:41:32. > :41:40.Here's now one for Germany that again is going to see them very

:41:40. > :41:50.high up the leader boards in the future, it's the young German

:41:50. > :41:51.

:41:51. > :42:01.Sandra Auffarth on this lovely horse, powerful horse Opgun Louvo.

:42:01. > :42:07.

:42:07. > :42:17.She took up eventing to hit the high spots. Just 6.5 behind team

:42:17. > :42:18.

:42:18. > :42:28.colleague Michael Jung. One fence down would put her just ahead of

:42:28. > :42:33.

:42:33. > :42:38.you can see him getting a little low in the outline with his head

:42:38. > :42:48.dropping down. But he is very, very neat in the front legs. Always

:42:48. > :42:53.

:42:53. > :43:03.stride quite short. You can see the horse drifted a little bit left to

:43:03. > :43:17.

:43:17. > :43:27.give him more room so he didn't lot of trust. She knows him well.

:43:27. > :43:40.

:43:40. > :43:46.Knows he is careful. She's allowing Just the last. 46.8 current leader.

:43:46. > :43:56.This could change that, and does! A very, very convincing clear round

:43:56. > :43:56.

:43:56. > :44:04.from the young German, 24 years old, Sandra Auffarth. So, 42.5 and down

:44:04. > :44:12.in the arena, she takes the applause. Claire is with Stefano.

:44:12. > :44:18.You are going to finish 6th or better, how tkaod tkaod -- good

:44:18. > :44:25.does that feel? Exciting. Pressure is high. I come here with a good

:44:25. > :44:29.horse. I want to do the best job before, because we work hard here.

:44:29. > :44:37.You will be at the European Championships for Italy this

:44:37. > :44:44.summer? I hope, why not. Now we finish here. And we see what we

:44:44. > :44:54.finish. I hope for him now we can finish with a good result. Great

:44:54. > :44:56.

:44:56. > :45:00.friend of Andrew Nicholson. He will safety belts. The first of the two

:45:00. > :45:09.going for the Rolex Grand Slam. Andrew will have to jump clear and

:45:09. > :45:19.the rest have to make mistakes if Andrew is going to win that

:45:19. > :45:31.

:45:31. > :45:37.this competition and won the four star in America in Kentucky just

:45:37. > :45:43.last weekend on a young horse. Could he win two in a week?

:45:43. > :45:48.I have to say, Mike, I am feeling sick just watching these guys. The

:45:48. > :45:53.pressure they're under... Someone's going to be happy at the end of the

:45:53. > :45:59.day and then three slightly disappointed. But it's certainly

:45:59. > :46:04.great viewing. It's a combination that's got better and better in

:46:04. > :46:10.this phase. Dare I say it, he jumped very well to win the

:46:10. > :46:15.individual bronze in Kentucky at the World Equestrian Games, 2010

:46:15. > :46:20.that was and so nearly won at that individual medal in London. Andrew

:46:20. > :46:24.is doing everything he can to help this horse. He has a big range

:46:24. > :46:29.stride for show jumping and you can see him fighting Andrew, wanting to

:46:29. > :46:33.get going and lengthen. Andrew has to keep pace up but keep strides

:46:33. > :46:38.short enough that the horse stays athletic and gets newspaper the air.

:46:38. > :46:43.Turns for home. We are going for a Badminton victory for the first

:46:43. > :46:53.time. Going for the Grand Slam. Coe still be in it -- he could still be

:46:53. > :47:04.

:47:04. > :47:14.in it and he does! It's game on! He this afternoon. He is imperious.

:47:14. > :47:18.

:47:18. > :47:28.This is tactics! He is a great favourite. Yes, and the next one in

:47:28. > :47:36.is William Fox-Pitt. Oh, my word, there is a little competition going

:47:36. > :47:40.on here. Is that friendly rivalry or what? But that does put enormous

:47:40. > :47:49.pressure on the rest. What a competition. Andrew was confident

:47:49. > :47:54.when he was interviewed. He has put his money where his mouth is really.

:47:54. > :48:00.The crowd have settled down, and this man, normally as cool as a

:48:00. > :48:10.cucumber, but I bet the butterflies are flying around in there.

:48:10. > :48:16.

:48:16. > :48:23.wouldn't be normal, wouldn't be human otherwise. Now the second

:48:23. > :48:33.challenge for the grand slam, and he is exactly four penalties behind the

:48:33. > :48:33.

:48:33. > :48:41.leader with Parklane Hawk. The first two had penalties, Michael Jung had

:48:41. > :48:50.a fence down, and William would go ahead of Michael Jung simply for

:48:50. > :49:00.being ahead of the optimum time. Fingers crossed, he is on his way.

:49:00. > :49:10.

:49:10. > :49:16.It is interesting he came in on the left rein. He was second behind

:49:16. > :49:26.Andrew Nicholson at Kentucky last weekend, can he get in front of him

:49:26. > :49:44.

:49:44. > :49:54.here. It has gone. That is all over for William, but it is still on for

:49:54. > :50:02.

:50:02. > :50:06.Andrew. Now, on that score of 44, going down two places at the moment.

:50:06. > :50:16.It is interesting, the horse gives so many of the fences so much room,

:50:16. > :50:20.

:50:21. > :50:30.then has the odd clonk. Jumps that, inside the time, 44, so at the

:50:31. > :50:47.

:50:47. > :50:57.moment he is behind both Nereo and Sandra Auffarth. This is his

:50:57. > :50:59.

:50:59. > :51:02.reaction. It could still happen, he needs Jock

:51:02. > :51:10.Paget and Michael Jung to make mistakes, but you could still win

:51:10. > :51:17.the grand slam. It might not sound very sporting, but I hope Jock gets

:51:17. > :51:25.one down, simple as that. How did you feel going into that? The same

:51:25. > :51:31.sort of pressure I would normally feel coming into this. With a horse

:51:31. > :51:39.like Nereo, I have an awful lot of faith in him. He has pulled some

:51:39. > :51:49.down quite a lot of times before when I have needed it. So, the man

:51:49. > :51:54.

:51:54. > :52:03.in second place, fellow colleague, Jock Paget. One fence down will put

:52:03. > :52:12.him behind Andrew, but it has got to be two for Michael Jung. Or a couple

:52:12. > :52:19.of time faults. Exactly, yes. This man, still young in years, but a

:52:19. > :52:26.great talent and they really have got a great partnership. Yes, just

:52:26. > :52:35.to be in the same breath as some as these experienced top riders, Jock

:52:35. > :52:38.Paget must be very happy to be there. New Zealand have taken on a

:52:38. > :52:44.world-class Spanish international showjumping rider is a great coach

:52:44. > :52:48.and he has done wonders for the Kiwis, and he will be watching. He

:52:48. > :52:58.is a really good man, and New Zealand has now got a management

:52:58. > :53:01.

:53:01. > :53:09.second to none. He hasn't got many to go. The horse is giving him a

:53:09. > :53:17.lot, dare I say. This man or the next man can spoil the grand slam

:53:17. > :53:27.party. One left, he will be putting the pressure on Michael Jung. He has

:53:27. > :53:34.

:53:34. > :53:42.never won here. 39.7, Jock Paget go on to 39.7, their dressage score and

:53:42. > :53:48.they become the challengers to Michael Jung. I bet it is warming up

:53:48. > :53:55.down there. It is silent down here, so quiet and far away from the noise

:53:55. > :54:04.of the arena. Michael Jung has been putting Sam through his final

:54:04. > :54:10.practice fences and he knows he could complete an unprecedented set

:54:10. > :54:17.of prizes. He is the European, world, and Olympic champion, and he

:54:17. > :54:23.could now win Badminton if he runs clear.

:54:23. > :54:28.His father is the trainer, very focused, although very much a German

:54:28. > :54:32.team man they train on their own. They know what has got to be done

:54:39. > :54:45.Remember, he is the only man or lady to win the Olympic, the world and

:54:45. > :54:52.the European, to hold them all at the same time. There is the target,

:54:52. > :55:00.39.7, which means Michael Jung has got to jump clear, and he is a man

:55:10. > :55:18.he and Sam covers now they will have planned, that is the detail they go

:55:18. > :55:24.down too. A clear round, and he will become the first German to win the

:55:32. > :55:42.never had a pole down, but anything is possible. As you say, nothing

:55:42. > :55:43.

:55:43. > :55:49.left to chance in the preparation for this. Michael has done so much

:55:49. > :55:59.grand prix showjumping, the size of the fences are nothing to him, but

:55:59. > :56:05.it is a question of how much the cross-country took out of Sam

:57:33. > :57:38.Everybody crowded around him and said well done, you have won

:57:38. > :57:44.Badminton. I need a little time to come to grips with it, it was

:57:56. > :58:01.Michael Jung comes to offer his congratulations. Michael, such a
