:00:29. > :00:32.British civilisation has been built on our relationship with horses. We

:00:33. > :00:37.have lived with them, worked with them, played with them, competed on

:00:38. > :00:42.them. And right now, British equestrian sport is at an all-time

:00:43. > :00:48.high because we have the number one riders in dressage, show jumping and

:00:49. > :00:54.in eventing, with William Fox-Pitt and this is the number 1 three-day

:00:55. > :00:56.event. We are here at Badminton House in Gloucestershire for the

:00:57. > :01:37.ultimate test of horse and rider. This year we have record prize

:01:38. > :01:42.money. ?80,000 going to the winner and 14 nations represented from as

:01:43. > :01:45.far afield as Australia and New Zealand and closer to home, Sweden,

:01:46. > :01:54.France, Italy and Great Britain. Let's look at the major contenders

:01:55. > :01:59.for the Mitsubishi Motors Trophy. William Fox Pi it, t has two high

:02:00. > :02:06.class horses and will be looking to add to his first Badminton title.

:02:07. > :02:11.New Zealand's Andrew Nicol sown has four Burley titles and Kentucky to

:02:12. > :02:16.his name but Badminton has eluded him. He has competed more times than

:02:17. > :02:20.anyone else. He wants to win. Sir Mark Todd is no stranger to the

:02:21. > :02:26.podium here at Badminton. At 58 he is the oldest rider and is as

:02:27. > :02:31.competitive as ever. Mary King, six times Olympian, twice

:02:32. > :02:35.a winner here and always a crowd favourite. The veteran has two world

:02:36. > :02:41.equestrian gold medals to her name and would love to add another this

:02:42. > :02:47.Sumner Normandy. The winner of Badminton and Burley in

:02:48. > :02:56.this Yorkshire man is tough, uncompromising. This year he is on

:02:57. > :02:59.Armada and one to work out for. And well World Championship team places

:03:00. > :03:06.up for grabs, the competition promises to be fierce and exciting.

:03:07. > :03:12.I'm hoping if I try really hard I may yet catch the selector's eye.

:03:13. > :03:17.Funds are being raised for Team GB to help improve performance. Despite

:03:18. > :03:22.William Fox Pi it, t being number one in the world since the first

:03:23. > :03:25.time since 1993, at last year's European Championships, the team

:03:26. > :03:36.came away without a medal. What went wrong. It wasn't just our weekend.

:03:37. > :03:40.In that sport, I think we have had a 15 or 16 year run of getting a team

:03:41. > :03:45.medal. It was going to be broken sooner or later. Unfortunately it

:03:46. > :03:50.happened last year. Very disappointing for Great Britain but

:03:51. > :03:53.we had had a long success of gold medals at Europeans and it wasn't

:03:54. > :03:58.going to last forever so, hopefully a little blip and I'm sure we will

:03:59. > :04:03.be back on top, soon. The Europeans weren't a great result for us. With

:04:04. > :04:07.anything, it is that fine line. You know, just one unlucky performance.

:04:08. > :04:11.There is no need to be doom and gloom. There are good ones coming

:04:12. > :04:14.through and there is a lot of strong competition, but the British team

:04:15. > :04:20.are getting stronger all the time. So what are the qualities at the

:04:21. > :04:24.forefront of selectors' minds as the World Championships in Normandy draw

:04:25. > :04:28.near? The number one priority is that we get a team that would

:04:29. > :04:33.possible give us Olympic qualification. Secondly, we want to

:04:34. > :04:37.select a team to do that plus win us as many medals as possible. These

:04:38. > :04:41.recent medals have been won by an elite group of talented individuals.

:04:42. > :04:46.I think, through time, it has been proven that with anything, whether

:04:47. > :04:49.it is football, rugby or a three-day event team, you get certain

:04:50. > :04:53.superstars, world class athletes that will be the backbone of a team

:04:54. > :05:00.for a certain number of years and lately we have had William Fox Pi

:05:01. > :05:05.it, it, Tina Cook, and Mary King. Following his success in Kentucky

:05:06. > :05:15.William Fox Pi it, it claimed the number one spot -- William Fox Pitt.

:05:16. > :05:20.It is great to be in this era with Geoff and Scarlet. It is a real

:05:21. > :05:23.honour for me. I shall be hoping to stay here after that weekend and

:05:24. > :05:28.going into the World Championships with, you know, riders in reach

:05:29. > :05:31.discipline n that position has to be a boost. With the world equestrian

:05:32. > :05:39.games looming, who else might be in the running? 2009 Badminton

:05:40. > :05:44.champion, Oliver Townend has been #24r before and seen how it works.

:05:45. > :05:48.-- has been there before. I tried to please the selectors and not make

:05:49. > :05:52.the right decisions for myself. Now I concentrate on my own performance

:05:53. > :05:57.as much as possible. If it is good enough, hopefully the phone will

:05:58. > :06:05.win. There are a number of young riders, Whittington, Danny Evans,

:06:06. > :06:08.Harry Meade and to mention a few, Izzy Taylor, that will hopefully

:06:09. > :06:14.come up with good results. Izzy Taylor made her debut on the GB

:06:15. > :06:17.squad last year. A hard-worked opportunity for the mother of two

:06:18. > :06:22.who loves this sport From being a little girl it is what I loved and I

:06:23. > :06:26.have got to live that dream. Not many can say that. There are very

:06:27. > :06:29.good riders out there that will go for it. They can be hard to beat. It

:06:30. > :06:34.is going to be out with the old and in with the new. There are plenty of

:06:35. > :06:40.British riders hoping to cement their place that that team for the

:06:41. > :06:44.World Equestrian Games but their eyes are focussed on these. The

:06:45. > :06:48.fences have always been beasts. It is an event steeped in tradition. If

:06:49. > :06:57.you win the title you know you are one of the world's greats. Hue

:06:58. > :07:18.Thomas, who for 25 years, was the court designer and director has

:07:19. > :07:23.handed over the course to a new man Giuseppe.

:07:24. > :07:39.What is your feeling of your first Badminton? Well, I wanted to respect

:07:40. > :07:46.this you place. It is - I wanted to respect it. You know you are at

:07:47. > :07:50.Badminton. Talk me through The Lake and what you have done We have come

:07:51. > :07:54.to a fence quite far from the Lake but it will be a big drop coming

:07:55. > :07:58.number of the controls to the boat will need to be accurate and again

:07:59. > :08:02.to the jetties. A gentle, curved line. This is the length that

:08:03. > :08:09.everybody knows. But you have also introduced a new water jump.

:08:10. > :08:15.A friendlier water fence than we have seen at maces at Badminton. Big

:08:16. > :08:20.set of rails. Into the water then the course of the rail on the way in

:08:21. > :08:24.or out The water gets deep very quick. This is an area of the park

:08:25. > :08:27.that hasn't been used before. This is totally new. The course never

:08:28. > :08:32.came up leer. I wanted to see if there was a possibility to change a

:08:33. > :08:37.bit and to come on this hill. I walked up here, so it is a nice

:08:38. > :08:42.shot. Different of the house. There was also a bit of water, so we

:08:43. > :08:47.decided to come here and do the change. This is a a natural pond and

:08:48. > :08:51.you have used silver birch and made itary so the horses can see what

:08:52. > :08:56.they are doing. I think silver birch is a lovely material, it is natural

:08:57. > :09:01.and under shade it can work where the horses can focus on in it. The

:09:02. > :09:06.riders like this fence. We'll go to one now that they think is scary.

:09:07. > :09:11.Very daunting and will take a lot of riding. It is terrifying. I woke up

:09:12. > :09:15.to 50m away and thought - that's the closest I need to get to it. Crikey.

:09:16. > :09:21.When I'm riding it, it hopefully won't look as big. Big and ugly. You

:09:22. > :09:28.have to stay on your line. Half way around the course. The old favourite

:09:29. > :09:33.the Vicarage Vee. Why does this get in riders' heads? If you soo he it

:09:34. > :09:37.from here, it is a normal fence. It is an upright. The problem is when

:09:38. > :09:41.you go closer to it and the ditch opens up and the riders at this

:09:42. > :09:46.point keep looking down. The more you look at t the bigger it becomes.

:09:47. > :09:50.If you actually can keep the line, a correct line and look at the three

:09:51. > :09:54.down there, the horse also just flight. Just remember that you have

:09:55. > :10:00.another fence after. It is not all over here. You have put an element B

:10:01. > :10:08.in. Yes. You are a mean man. Well... The key to the Vicarage Vee, is

:10:09. > :10:14.don't look down. What on earth is happening? I

:10:15. > :10:18.thought it was unridable. A real accuracy test. Not pretty. Asking a

:10:19. > :10:24.real question of everybody. You have to sit on your backside and work.

:10:25. > :10:28.Well, this is fence 18. Would it be fair to say this is the trickiest

:10:29. > :10:31.combination on the course? Will this cause problems? I don't know if it

:10:32. > :10:34.is the most difficult one but it is surely different. There is no

:10:35. > :10:38.pattern here. You must ride what you have, what you feel and actually

:10:39. > :10:42.this fallen tree here I think fits well. It is nice here in the

:10:43. > :10:46.surroundings and then you go down and you have a right turn and then a

:10:47. > :10:51.left turn and then back into the gallop. So it is an S shape. You

:10:52. > :10:58.have used the undulations. Riders need maximum control. Overall it is

:10:59. > :11:07.a beautiful course. It is a proper four-star test It is. The best of

:11:08. > :11:11.luck to the riders and horses. You won title three times. What do

:11:12. > :11:19.you make of the course? There is a lot to like. Giuseppe has done

:11:20. > :11:23.everything he could with the course. A lot of the open fence, rather than

:11:24. > :11:28.big boxes, I think it is all very positive. He has fences like the

:11:29. > :11:32.Vicarage Ditch which is a serious fence. It is almost five-star. Real,

:11:33. > :11:38.old Badminton. I love T there are one or two places for me -- I love

:11:39. > :11:42.it. For me, I hope it is his first year and he might make it tougher

:11:43. > :11:46.next year. There is lots to judgment of we are here in the Quarry. --

:11:47. > :11:53.there is lots to jump. There is a wall here. It was the

:11:54. > :11:57.Quarry but no signs of any stones. He has used the material for the

:11:58. > :12:01.fences. Instead of log after log, we have silver birch rails and a new

:12:02. > :12:06.wall. I think it is all very positive. The riders like it a lot.

:12:07. > :12:12.That's good and positive. We have a very international feel. For some of

:12:13. > :12:16.them they will have an eye on the World Equestrian Games. How

:12:17. > :12:21.significant is this as a test event? Can you think of that? You can and

:12:22. > :12:25.some countries do. But, I know for the likes of the Brits, they have

:12:26. > :12:28.some really good young horses coming through and they wouldn't

:12:29. > :12:33.necessarily want to bring their horses - the exciting horses here

:12:34. > :12:37.and give a big challenge and then go on to the Royal Championships later

:12:38. > :12:42.on in the year and ask for another big challenge. I would imagine the

:12:43. > :12:47.British selectors this year are probably looking at some of the

:12:48. > :12:53.three-star courses and looking for horses on their way up their careers

:12:54. > :12:57.inane up the levels. Last year, for example at the European

:12:58. > :13:02.Championships as a team we didn't do very well but Malmo was renowned for

:13:03. > :13:09.not having particularly good footing and I know riders are having

:13:10. > :13:14.concerns about taking their stars of the future and risking them on that

:13:15. > :13:22.sort of ground. We could have a pretty good team this year. The most

:13:23. > :13:31.noticeable omission here was this rider, whose horse tested positive

:13:32. > :13:37.for a banned substance. He is still awaiting results. Does this sport

:13:38. > :13:41.have a problem with doping? Or in your spn it clean? I don't think

:13:42. > :13:46.there is a serious problem. I think it is cleevenlt I don't think there

:13:47. > :13:52.is intent with what happened to Jock and he along with Kevin McNab, the

:13:53. > :13:55.Australian tested for the same substance they are saying they think

:13:56. > :13:59.there has been contamination. I know from past experience, I have had a

:14:00. > :14:03.problem with horse food being contaminated coming across from the

:14:04. > :14:06.continent opted boats. So, I don't really think there is a big issue

:14:07. > :14:11.there. I think what is toughest for Jock and Kevin, is this is their

:14:12. > :14:14.careers what we are playing with and the FEI are being slow about sorting

:14:15. > :14:18.this out. It is September and they will not have a hearing until un.

:14:19. > :14:22.They can't do anything until after that hearing. Whether they will be

:14:23. > :14:26.able to compete after that remains to be seen. Let them get on with it.

:14:27. > :14:32.Rightly or wrongly, it is taking too long. Exactly. Let's get on with the

:14:33. > :14:45.Badminton horse trials and see who faired best in the dressage.

:14:46. > :14:55.Setting the pace, Clark Montgomerie of the USA. What it is like? It is

:14:56. > :15:01.nerve-racking for the rest of the weekend. Instead of starting at the

:15:02. > :15:06.front rather than chasing everybody. 33.3 penalty points. In second

:15:07. > :15:09.place, the 2010 champion, Paul Tapner.

:15:10. > :15:17.The actual test was fantastic it is nice when you get a score to match

:15:18. > :15:23.the score you think you've done. It feels you with confidence going into

:15:24. > :15:28.the cross-country? I don't know. Dressage is a bit girly. You have to

:15:29. > :15:34.be precise. Cross-country is more my stuff. Aussie male stuff, come on!

:15:35. > :15:45.Totally ready for it. He'll be rathering to go on the grey,

:15:46. > :15:50.Kilronan. Best-placed Brit, Francis Whittington. We've had a fantastic

:15:51. > :15:58.test this week. I am thrilled with how he worked. . Went in very

:15:59. > :16:02.nicely. I have a point to prove to myself

:16:03. > :16:07.that I can follow through. I can finish off what I started. Let 's

:16:08. > :16:26.have a look at the full leaderboard. The feeling among the riders is that

:16:27. > :16:30.the dressage will not be as influential this year. That

:16:31. > :16:36.leaderboard could change, because the cross-country course is tough

:16:37. > :16:39.and conditions are difficult. Heavy overnight rain, showers now. A

:16:40. > :16:43.couple of changes to the course because of the weather and because

:16:44. > :16:48.of this new mound, they have taken out the log at the bottom. Instead

:16:49. > :16:52.of an S-bend it is easier and they jump the leg out at the end. The

:16:53. > :16:55.other change at the quarry is fence 26, the wall that came up the hill,

:16:56. > :16:59.that has gone. It is a shorter course. It is a quicker time. We

:17:00. > :17:09.will see what effect that has with our commentary team.

:17:10. > :17:18.81 starters on cross-country day. The young lady to get us under way,

:17:19. > :17:22.30-year-old Izzy Taylor. She's been here before. She's one

:17:23. > :17:29.that is very much tipped for the top. This is the year that really

:17:30. > :17:42.this lady could put her name up in lights. 11.21 seconds, the time.

:17:43. > :17:47.Over 6, 500 metres. Three jumping efforts for those two taken out.

:17:48. > :17:53.Two fairly straightforward fences to get them under way. A big dip at

:17:54. > :17:58.Two fairly straightforward fences to Keepers Brush. The first of the

:17:59. > :18:01.steady climbs. Here we see the fence at five - the real test of

:18:02. > :18:05.combination and accuracy, the feature here. Yes, I think that is

:18:06. > :18:09.right. Interestingly enough, we think of the first few fences of

:18:10. > :18:11.being a let-up. The ground is up and down, so the horses never, apart

:18:12. > :18:16.from the first fence, down, so the horses never, apart

:18:17. > :18:20.get into their rhythm. Here it is steep downhill. These fences are

:18:21. > :18:26.incredibly narrow. Only a metre between the flags.

:18:27. > :18:32.incredibly narrow. Only a metre Now, a little gallop uphill. The

:18:33. > :18:38.famous avenue, looking down to that wonderful backdrop of Badminton

:18:39. > :18:39.House. Izzy, who made her first appearance in the Europeans last

:18:40. > :18:44.year - it was a disappointment appearance in the Europeans last

:18:45. > :18:47.her, but a very good rider to start this course off. A lot of

:18:48. > :18:52.anticipation with this big chal lepging test ahead and immediately

:18:53. > :19:00.she looks in very positive mode here. Yes, it is great. She went

:19:01. > :19:06.wide over these two big oxers. It was a good start for Izzy. Here u

:19:07. > :19:10.we are looking at the -- here we are looking at the various ways, the

:19:11. > :19:16.blue is the alternative. It is a mighty long way. I very much suspect

:19:17. > :19:20.that she will go straight, as I suspect most might, unless they get

:19:21. > :19:25.into trouble. Big crowds are waiting for action at The Lake. For 65 years

:19:26. > :19:29.now this has been one of the great features of Badminton. Here

:19:30. > :19:37.now this has been one of the great the first - Izzy Taylor.

:19:38. > :19:44.That was fantastic. That would give all the other competitors in the

:19:45. > :19:49.start box a great boost to see how well that lake was riding. There are

:19:50. > :19:52.seven previous winners. Here is one of them. The lady who has won three

:19:53. > :19:58.times and the only one to of them. The lady who has won three

:19:59. > :20:05.Rolex Grand Slam. That is the big three biggies. She did this in 2003.

:20:06. > :20:12.This is a new one from the Billy Stud. Her and her husband drive,

:20:13. > :20:17.Billy Beware, first time at Badminton. Back to the fences at the

:20:18. > :20:23.hollow. A Brush Oxer - two versions, which

:20:24. > :20:37.are wide. A rather in inconvenient little rise to it.

:20:38. > :20:42.A great cross-country girl, this one.

:20:43. > :20:51.Here is the undulation before the oxer.

:20:52. > :21:01.Billy Beware and Pippa Funnell. Pippa came back into the world's

:21:02. > :21:06.elite qu her performance in -- with her performance in Kentucky. This

:21:07. > :21:11.horse is very inexperienced at this level. She's had to work hard. A

:21:12. > :21:18.big, striding horse, but good work from both of them.

:21:19. > :21:26.And Izzy coming down to this fence - it put the frighteners into the

:21:27. > :21:31.riders. Rattled the top of that, but no problem. Then that tight turn

:21:32. > :21:37.back to the second element. Gets the stick out to say, come on

:21:38. > :21:48.Matilda. No problems so far. Very quickly they come to the Mirage

:21:49. > :21:55.Pond. Brilliant! What a start. She's having a great ride.

:21:56. > :22:01.Well, 15 nations here. It is a really big international occasion

:22:02. > :22:08.here now. Andrew Nicholson is away. Quimbo.

:22:09. > :22:14.When it is wet, it does not really worry me. This time, Quimbo, he

:22:15. > :22:20.would not have a lot of thorough bred in him. So it will make it hard

:22:21. > :22:27.work for him if the ground is a little bit more tiring.

:22:28. > :22:34.So, here is Andrew Nicholson. Here at the escalator. A classic

:22:35. > :22:39.Nicholson. This horse was so impressive when he won in Kentucky

:22:40. > :22:50.last year. He has shown a lot of form since. Izzy coming to this

:22:51. > :22:54.jump. He trips, stumbled, slipped. He did something on the landing

:22:55. > :22:57.there. It didn't quite work. She ended up on three-and-a-half

:22:58. > :23:03.strides. An enormous corner. There was no way the horse could negotiate

:23:04. > :23:10.that. She now has to regroup and take the longer way. You can see how

:23:11. > :23:16.big and wide these corners are. A big combination of fences.

:23:17. > :23:21.Two-thirds of the way around. Here is Billy Beware and Pippa Funnell,

:23:22. > :23:26.really making use of this galloping stretch of fences and here comes the

:23:27. > :23:33.Vee. A horse that could eat that fence and does. Turns pretty and

:23:34. > :23:39.puts in a nice step. Big-striding horse. He was so neat there. Pippa

:23:40. > :23:43.rode a brilliant line. Here is Izzy Taylor coming home on her first two

:23:44. > :23:47.rides A great performance for the rest of the 80 horses still to come

:23:48. > :23:54.because they have seen this young lady make this course look very

:23:55. > :24:00.jumpable. She comes home. The horse with her ears pricked. She will get

:24:01. > :24:06.time faults. Each one for those 35 seconds over. Moving on to 95.8 -

:24:07. > :24:15.the first one home. Well, it is quite breezy. It is

:24:16. > :24:21.quite damp. We see Pippa go through The Lake.

:24:22. > :24:26.She hits that very hard and gets away wit. -- with it. She did

:24:27. > :24:31.nothing wrong. I am thrilled with her. Just annoying with. That but

:24:32. > :24:35.you know, she jump ped the rest of the -- jumped the rest of the

:24:36. > :24:39.course. We all walked it, as we all said. So very pleased with her.

:24:40. > :24:43.course. We all walked it, as we all annoying. Good analysis from Izzy.

:24:44. > :24:48.It is just what the of riders think. This man loves this situation. On to

:24:49. > :24:53.the... Oh and he didn't seem to go on with as much positive riding as

:24:54. > :24:57.we would expect from Nicholson! It is interesting, as he was coming

:24:58. > :25:02.down the hill, he looked as if he was getting slower and shorter in

:25:03. > :25:08.the can'ter. I expected him to be -- canter and I expected him to get on

:25:09. > :25:12.to that and the horse was looking to the right. Unusual for Mr Nicholson,

:25:13. > :25:15.I have to say. And this is a brilliant horse. So I am surprised

:25:16. > :25:20.there. Is that producing some results that

:25:21. > :25:25.are surprising us? Is that where it is going? Again, just not the best

:25:26. > :25:30.of shots to it. The horse just ducks out. It didn't lock on, as you say.

:25:31. > :25:43.So, that is 20 penalties on the board. The next Kiwi stands up. A

:25:44. > :25:47.four-time winner. Both horses have good lead-up form. It is a very big

:25:48. > :25:51.course this year. There's lots of questions.

:25:52. > :25:55.I am pretty sure that they are able to answer them. I hope I give them a

:25:56. > :26:06.good ride and we have a good time out there.

:26:07. > :26:12.Away goes Mark Todd. He's got two rides. He's a lot of people's tip

:26:13. > :26:24.for the title that year, particularly on the second horse,

:26:25. > :26:29.which will come much later on during the day.

:26:30. > :26:35.He is at the age of 50-plus and he is very keen to win these

:26:36. > :26:41.competitions. And William Fox-Pitt took after over from him after

:26:42. > :26:51.Kentucky. A huge amount of scope. That didn't seem to concern the

:26:52. > :26:56.horse there. That was Nicholson at his best. He gave the horse a

:26:57. > :27:02.beautifully confident ride through there. The riders not too happy

:27:03. > :27:04.about that Mirage Pond. There is Andrew Nicholson coming

:27:05. > :27:18.about that Mirage Pond. There is retired. He did of course have

:27:19. > :27:24.about that Mirage Pond. There is refusal at the Overlander Bank.

:27:25. > :27:28.about that Mirage Pond. There is You will not see it ridden any

:27:29. > :27:36.better than that all day, I wouldn't think. So Mark Toddoat. He's been

:27:37. > :27:41.such -- Sir Mark Todd. He's been such a great ambassador for the

:27:42. > :27:50.sport. Here is a double Olympic champion -

:27:51. > :27:56.coming to the Silver Birch oxers. Six and seven.

:27:57. > :28:01.That's why riders should emulate Mark Todd. The balance, the

:28:02. > :28:06.smoothness, the ease in which he Mark Todd. The balance, the

:28:07. > :28:12.jumped those fences. Amazingly, 58 years old and riding as well as

:28:13. > :28:17.ever, as is this lady Pippa Funnell. Billy Beware, coming home to the

:28:18. > :28:21.Rolex Rolex Presentation Boxes. It is a tricky angle. This 10-year-old

:28:22. > :28:26.is looking good. This is is a tricky angle. This 10-year-old

:28:27. > :28:31.prospect for the future. As she comes into the ring, she is probably

:28:32. > :28:37.going to be 50-seconds over. She will be happy with this horse.

:28:38. > :28:42.One of the two horses redesigned, will be her second ride near the end

:28:43. > :28:46.of the day. Looking comfortable, she hasn't pushed this horse too hard,

:28:47. > :28:50.which is important. It gives him confidence for the future. There we

:28:51. > :28:53.are, just over one minute over. 66.3. The current

:28:54. > :28:55.are, just over one minute over. sure she will not be at

:28:56. > :29:00.are, just over one minute over. the day but that is a very exciting

:29:01. > :29:09.performance for Funnell and Billy Beware. And of Tim Price now and

:29:10. > :29:13.performance for Funnell and Billy Ringwood Sky Boy. Five strides on

:29:14. > :29:18.the turn. A bit of arguing there. Rattled the

:29:19. > :29:21.second gate. The riders are concerned about these gates. There's

:29:22. > :29:27.no ground there. Lying vertical. They have to slow down to jump them.

:29:28. > :29:31.Then, as they come into the other end of The Lake, sort of

:29:32. > :29:35.insignificant-looking fence. The water is very deep. We saw Pippa

:29:36. > :29:38.Funnell earlier have a struggle there. And Mark Todd had a peck

:29:39. > :29:53.after that big fence. Here is a another big star, sitting

:29:54. > :30:02.on his backside! Can you believe that?

:30:03. > :30:10.That is a reality check for Mark. And falling, it means he is

:30:11. > :30:12.eliminated. That's the situation. Let's look at it again. Well, the

:30:13. > :30:21.horse seemed to peck on the landing. It is a big fence this Bull Finch.

:30:22. > :30:25.It just trips. Has at bit of a stumble. I have to say, I'm not sure

:30:26. > :30:31.that Mark wasn't riding a little backwards. He got a bit slow here.

:30:32. > :30:39.He thought about the big stride, changes his mind and then the horse

:30:40. > :30:43.says - I can't do that, sorry, dad. Huge smiles from Pippa Funnell, you

:30:44. > :30:49.are really chuffed with that? Really, really, really chuffed. I

:30:50. > :30:54.have been so worried. You know with everyone saying - it has only done

:30:55. > :30:57.one three-star, are you being sensible bringing a such a young

:30:58. > :31:00.horse here. You don't know how they are going to be until you get here

:31:01. > :31:06.and even though the time obviously was slow but from the future point

:31:07. > :31:15.of view, I'm really excited. COMMENTATOR: A lovely shot. Now Tim

:31:16. > :31:21.Pric. . Been here a number of years. He married his long-time girlfriend

:31:22. > :31:27.last winter. He has two very good rides. Tim Price with Ringwood

:31:28. > :31:31.Mississippi. He is clear and kept a lovely rhythm. -- Ringwood Sky Boy.

:31:32. > :31:35.That's the change of route with the second wall being taken out in the

:31:36. > :31:45.Quarry, as you can see, still looking a little damp. As Francis

:31:46. > :31:50.Whittington, comes to the escalator. Easy Target. Great dressage. A good,

:31:51. > :31:53.confident start for this talented Horsman. Hasn't had the best of luck

:31:54. > :32:04.here in the past. Could this be his year?

:32:05. > :32:10.Tim Price, a sharp angle. You can see the jump judge carrying the

:32:11. > :32:13.flag. He jumped the second element without the flag. He won't get

:32:14. > :32:18.penalised but it makes the fence more difficult to assess for the

:32:19. > :32:21.horse to approach. Well, it is a pretty good time, I have to say.

:32:22. > :32:28.That's certainly the quickest so far, without a doubt. Interesting

:32:29. > :32:33.that 2011 was the last time we went around this way and we did see, in

:32:34. > :32:37.that year, horses getting tired. You might remember Land Vision and Mark

:32:38. > :32:41.Todd come home that year. It will be interesting to see, as the day

:32:42. > :32:46.unfolds with this going, whether the same might happen but here is the

:32:47. > :32:56.23-year-old, Ludwig Svennerstal, from Sweden.

:32:57. > :33:03.He works near Swindon. He goes down the left route. One of the early

:33:04. > :33:16.ones to do that. Most have gone down the right so far.

:33:17. > :33:25.The big grey here, and the owner has tremendous horses. The horse jumps

:33:26. > :33:27.close to the red flag over the first one and gets a good line through.

:33:28. > :33:33.close to the red flag over the first That was pretty neat. Covered every

:33:34. > :33:36.inch of ground there. After a great test, he wants to come up

:33:37. > :33:38.inch of ground there. After a great good result. Should be full of

:33:39. > :33:43.confidence the way this horse has started. Ludwig Svennerstal was in

:33:44. > :33:46.confidence the way this horse has that bronze medal team for Sweden in

:33:47. > :33:52.the Europeans. Oh, my word, he left a leg. And he had sat so tight. A

:33:53. > :33:59.great recovery. He has very long legs, this man, but he recovered. He

:34:00. > :34:05.clamped on and it saved him there. You can just see a re-. Are you it

:34:06. > :34:09.is interesting. They accelerated up to the log and without the fence in

:34:10. > :34:14.the middle, he didn't have to go in quite so balanced. Then a big slip

:34:15. > :34:17.in the bottom. Perhaps they were right in taking that fence out,

:34:18. > :34:23.because that horse is certainly slipping there. Now Jody Amos on

:34:24. > :34:28.Matt. The first time they had a lot of bad luck. They tried several

:34:29. > :34:32.times but their first time there. Oh, my word. Too close to the last

:34:33. > :34:37.element and you can see that rail, in that brush. Good too slow and

:34:38. > :34:43.shipped Jody Amos on to the deck. Watch it again. Well, she's

:34:44. > :34:46.accelerating. The horse says -- I cannot go on that one, I have to pin

:34:47. > :34:50.another one in and hit the rail in the middle of that. There is a fair

:34:51. > :35:01.old bang on the ground she got there. Quite often the riders -

:35:02. > :35:04.well, they have air vests on and sometimes when they go off they get

:35:05. > :35:06.winded and sometimes they lie longer because they can't breathe for a

:35:07. > :35:17.second or two. Ludwig Svennerstal here looking for

:35:18. > :35:21.his first completion. Well-ridden to the first gate and second. Looks

:35:22. > :35:26.back, I don't know why, it is not show jumping. It shouldn't fall

:35:27. > :35:32.down. Now we see the man from the

:35:33. > :35:41.Netherlands. Andrew Heffernan. Based up in Cheshire with this lovely

:35:42. > :35:44.horse. 51.8 in the dressage. He wouldn't be the most stylish but he

:35:45. > :35:49.has certainly helped the Dutch team of late. Ridden in both the

:35:50. > :36:02.Europeans and the Olympic Games, Andrew. Coming down to this Vicarage

:36:03. > :36:08.Ve. This horse has looked impressive. From a long way out, you

:36:09. > :36:14.could see him accelerating. Will he make the turn? Very neat. And wasted

:36:15. > :36:24.not a second. This horse has always promised a lot. Easy Targeted. He

:36:25. > :36:28.may just be delivering. Andrew Heffernan. He loves teaching. He

:36:29. > :36:32.does a lot of good work in the pony club up in Cheshire. He really

:36:33. > :36:37.enjoys his sport, too. A very determined competitive rider. Oh,

:36:38. > :36:41.look at that, elbows going. It is not necessarily the style but it is

:36:42. > :36:47.the determination and where you put the horse and those are the two key

:36:48. > :36:51.facts here, coming down to the big bank. It has caused more problems

:36:52. > :36:56.than you would have expected so far. It jumped so well last year, first I

:36:57. > :37:00.am the hole was there. That's great. Very determined riding there. He is

:37:01. > :37:03.certainly proactive as a rider, isn't he? He is asking everything of

:37:04. > :37:07.the horse. You can see through this dip, he is a long way off. The horse

:37:08. > :37:12.tries, he can not make the spread, but he runs over the top of it. But

:37:13. > :37:15.doesn't waste time. They are back in the rhythm quickly. Here comes

:37:16. > :37:21.Ludwig Svennerstal. You will hear a lot more of this young man. He rode

:37:22. > :37:26.a horse in the Olympic Games that impressed many. He now finishes for

:37:27. > :37:28.a horse in the Olympic Games that the very first time for Sweden,

:37:29. > :37:43.Ludwig Svennerstal and Alexander. Coming up next in the

:37:44. > :37:49.Harry Meade, he is 30. His father won three Olympic golds and

:37:50. > :37:52.Badminton twice. You can see he has his elbows bandaged up. There is a

:37:53. > :37:57.good reason. It is a miracle he is here at all. I spoke to him

:37:58. > :38:03.yesterday to hear his story. What happened? I had a ro tagsal fall

:38:04. > :38:08.last August. I landed, basically being shot like a vaf Lin and landed

:38:09. > :38:14.my arms straight. They snapped into the elbows and dislocated and

:38:15. > :38:18.shattered. -- like a javelin. Was there a point that you thought you

:38:19. > :38:22.would never able to ride? Yes, they were worried about my arms. They

:38:23. > :38:26.were shattered into so many places, they weren't sure with even with

:38:27. > :38:32.pinning, whether they would be able to put them back suitably to carry

:38:33. > :38:37.on riding. The first we thought we were healing OK and the bones were

:38:38. > :38:41.showing no signs of joining up. At one point near Christmas, I thought

:38:42. > :38:46.I wouldn't sit on a horse again. It is extraordinary you are here. It is

:38:47. > :38:51.also slightly bonkers. I mean, look at this... Well, I worked out the

:38:52. > :38:55.last sort of - I think this is my ninth time at Badminton. I looked at

:38:56. > :39:00.the fitness programme for the horses on all the previous years I have

:39:01. > :39:03.come. I tried to leave it to the last-possible moment. I day I

:39:04. > :39:07.reckoned I could physically get on the horse and come to Badminton was

:39:08. > :39:11.the first day I started riding again. I talked to very few people

:39:12. > :39:16.about the fact I wanted to talk to Badminton. The one I did I think

:39:17. > :39:21.thought I was going through a grieving process, to try and see it

:39:22. > :39:24.wouldn't work. But it is mazing, I'm thrilled we have managed to get

:39:25. > :39:28.here. In the midst of all of this, your wife game birth to your first

:39:29. > :39:33.child Slightly unexpectedly. It happened very fast and I called the

:39:34. > :39:34.midwife who said - call an ambulance. The ambulance said they

:39:35. > :39:39.were not going to get here ambulance. The ambulance said they

:39:40. > :39:43.I ended up delivering him on the bathroom floor on my own. I should

:39:44. > :39:45.point out no longer with your arms in plaster but you are Superman.

:39:46. > :39:58.Let's see how he gets on. COMMENTATOR: The sport is very proud

:39:59. > :40:06.of this young man. He has worked very hard for this moment. He is

:40:07. > :40:12.very much like his father who has won pick golds. Away goes Harry with

:40:13. > :40:17.Wild Lone. This is the moment he has been dreaming of. Here is easy

:40:18. > :40:24.targeted, looking a shade weary one has to say -- Easy Target. He is

:40:25. > :40:29.going through the hunts mans close. Up goes the hand. He obviously felt

:40:30. > :40:34.the horse was getting weary. Yes, as he approached the fence, you could

:40:35. > :40:35.see the horse had not a lot of petrol left in the tank. He jumped

:40:36. > :40:40.the log well but he petrol left in the tank. He jumped

:40:41. > :40:44.have the energy to turn to those two big corners, so a very wise

:40:45. > :40:47.decision, probably. And a brave decision. You get that far around

:40:48. > :40:52.and the horse is going so well. Well, here is Wild Lone and Harry

:40:53. > :40:57.Meade, top of the escalators. This is where he will want his arms, his

:40:58. > :41:04.brain, all in gear to get that line. Oh, Wild Lone does lock on, doesn't

:41:05. > :41:06.get a great shot to it but picks it up. Up he goes up the hill. He will

:41:07. > :41:12.want to put that out of up. Up he goes up the hill. He will

:41:13. > :41:17.Well, he jumps in quite well but a long way off the second one. A bit

:41:18. > :41:20.of guesswork going on there. Not a great start. He jumped over the log.

:41:21. > :41:24.I had nothing. I thought - there is no way, he doesn't deserve to be

:41:25. > :41:28.pushed now to try to jump what are the biggest corners we will ever

:41:29. > :41:32.see. I didn't have the energy - there was no point in trying to

:41:33. > :41:38.expect him to do that. Yet again after another good dressage, we end

:41:39. > :41:43.up walking home. Very unfortunate for Francis.

:41:44. > :41:46.up walking home. Very unfortunate he is based up in Cheshire and now

:41:47. > :41:51.very much riding for the Netherlands. He is going the long

:41:52. > :41:55.route. He really is using his head. One begins to think, Ian, that this

:41:56. > :41:57.course is very much about the thinking process, real iedsing what

:41:58. > :42:02.you have underneath and making the most of what you have got --

:42:03. > :42:09.realising. Well, there is no real let-up. A good bit of riding.

:42:10. > :42:13.realising. Well, there is no real Andrew's horse is weary. There is no

:42:14. > :42:17.let-up. You have to assess the horse's ability there and taking

:42:18. > :42:23.long routes is sometimes the right decision. Positive riding from

:42:24. > :42:31.Harry. Flies rhythm. We go back to Andrew Heffernan. Andrew never nan

:42:32. > :42:39.now down to the Rolex Presentation Boxes. -- Andrew Heffernan.

:42:40. > :42:44.He will get quite a few time penalties but this is great news for

:42:45. > :42:48.Netter they wouldn't be one of the leading eventing countries in the

:42:49. > :42:54.world. -- for the Netherlands. They might be in dressage. But this

:42:55. > :43:03.team are getting decent results and this is another one. Andrew

:43:04. > :43:07.Heffernan at the last. This horse not one of the youngest. He has

:43:08. > :43:11.produced one of the best results of his career with that. Clear with 56

:43:12. > :43:22.seconds over the time. Oh, a good jump over the first of

:43:23. > :43:27.the Vicarage Vee, but a peck on the landing. A good turn. And there is

:43:28. > :43:37.no sign of Harry having any problems with his elbows, which is great news

:43:38. > :43:40.for everyone. Positive, accurate, flowing and look how quickly he gets

:43:41. > :43:49.back into the rhythm away from that pond fence. 56-year-old Pascal

:43:50. > :43:54.Leroy. He was in the top 25 in 2010/11. He has been here a number

:43:55. > :44:00.of times. A beautifully through the water. A stylish jockey, Pascal

:44:01. > :44:07.Leroy. He, on a good dressage of 57.3. So he is in such the way the

:44:08. > :44:14.day is unfolding. -- 47.3. Here is Harry. Can he get back to it? A long

:44:15. > :44:21.way off but took the flag with him. Oh, it is in his tail. That will

:44:22. > :44:29.give him compression impulsion. But flying. A fairy-tale at the moment

:44:30. > :44:40.for Harry. Can he keep it up? Now Pascal will he Roy. Minute os

:44:41. > :44:51.de-Petra very experienced. -- Minos s Depetra very experienced.

:44:52. > :44:58.Now through that pond. Away he goes down now to the vik rarge vee, as

:44:59. > :45:03.Harry Meade comes to the presentation boxes. Not quite so

:45:04. > :45:07.inside home. There was not much wrong with his elbows there. Picked

:45:08. > :45:11.up the knitting and drove for home! It is a decent time, as it is

:45:12. > :45:16.unfolding. Well, he's had a brilliant ride,

:45:17. > :45:20.Harry. How impressive is this? He just told us what he has been

:45:21. > :45:27.through with his elbows. Delivering his own baby and now he's clear

:45:28. > :45:30.cross-country and Badminton. Most people thought he would not ride

:45:31. > :45:32.cross-country and Badminton. Most again. Well, that is in incredible!

:45:33. > :45:37.cross-country and Badminton. Most A real fairytale and that is what

:45:38. > :45:43.this sport is made of. A wonderful character and determination and this

:45:44. > :45:57.man full of both and a great ride. Now the Frenchman.

:45:58. > :46:02.Pascal is having a nice ride so far. Just stalled a little bit.

:46:03. > :46:08.How did it feel? Amazing. I love that horse. I have produced him

:46:09. > :46:12.since he aus a four-year-old. We know each other like the back of our

:46:13. > :46:16.hands. I know the going was holding and causing problems. I thought I

:46:17. > :46:17.would not rather sit on anything else. He is a super

:46:18. > :46:22.would not rather sit on anything expected to be here. It is

:46:23. > :46:28.wonderful! I loved every minute of that! Here is Tim Lips. His father

:46:29. > :46:36.went around the Barcelona Olympics. This was a show jumper. He has

:46:37. > :46:40.turned to eventing. He had good results in Kentucky about five years

:46:41. > :46:47.ago. A good jockey and part of this team which are making a mark in the

:46:48. > :46:51.sport. Pascal coming to the quarry. The

:46:52. > :46:55.horses are full of running. We have seen quite a few weary horses here.

:46:56. > :47:17.Downhill, down to that upright wall. Now the

:47:18. > :47:24.was winner of course on the lovely horse I Know Nothing. This is a

:47:25. > :47:29.horse he thinks a lot of, Kilronan. He did a wonderful dressage test. He

:47:30. > :47:35.sets off. Put in He did a wonderful dressage test. He

:47:36. > :47:42.cross-country round and he'll be top of the leaderboard, I would think.

:47:43. > :47:44.He certainly set off with great determination, which is good to see

:47:45. > :47:50.after such a brilliant test.

:47:51. > :47:56.Minos De Petra, heading home. This horse is full of running. Look at

:47:57. > :48:00.him abouting accelerate accelerating. This is the most

:48:01. > :48:02.him abouting accelerate stylish round we have seen so far.

:48:03. > :48:03.him abouting accelerate It had its moments, slernly did out

:48:04. > :48:09.of the -- certainly did out It had its moments, slernly did out

:48:10. > :48:18.garden gates. Not as fast as the very good time of Tim Price. He was

:48:19. > :48:24.around for a 11-time faults. He has a few more, but seconds. The

:48:25. > :48:29.Frenchman goes into second place behind Tim Price. Pippa Funnell -

:48:30. > :48:34.what a round from her! She's in third. Harry Meade, oh, what can you

:48:35. > :48:55.say! He's in fourth. He was a good winner at the National

:48:56. > :49:01.Circuit. He's going up to The Lake, while we see Tim Lips now. A good

:49:02. > :49:08.bit of riding from Tim. The look on his face as he approached that bank

:49:09. > :49:13.could tell you everything. Absolutely focussed! Kilronan,

:49:14. > :49:21.The Lake. He's not hanging about.

:49:22. > :49:29.He's not hanging around and he said, in his interview, there is

:49:30. > :49:33.testosterone going on. He got rid of the gishly dressage -- girly

:49:34. > :49:44.dressage stuff. Tim Lips going the alternative

:49:45. > :49:49.route. A good piece of thinking. Analysing what horse-power he's got

:49:50. > :49:53.underneath him and then making the alterations. Perhaps that might have

:49:54. > :49:55.been his long-term goal. These are big corners so far down the course.

:49:56. > :50:01.This boy has matured, hasn't he? big corners so far down the course.

:50:02. > :50:07.sure has! This is a real worker, Paul Tapner. A lovely family. He

:50:08. > :50:13.lives close to Swindon as many riders do.

:50:14. > :50:19.He does a better job than Toddy one has to say! A pat on the neck,

:50:20. > :50:24.giving the horse some confidence and that Outlander Bank - a different

:50:25. > :50:27.story to last year. Yes, last year the fence rode quite brilliantly.

:50:28. > :50:31.This year they have a downhill approach. That was goodbye Paul. A

:50:32. > :50:36.downhill approach and then the riders are riding the bank thinking

:50:37. > :50:40.about the skinny fence after it. The ones that are attacking the bank,

:50:41. > :50:52.they get the benefit of the skinny as well. Lucinda Fredericks. A

:50:53. > :50:56.flying finish. Did well after dressage and oh, I have a feeling

:50:57. > :51:02.there's something wrong. She sits down and looked down and she's

:51:03. > :51:06.pulling up. What? Such a disappointment. Lucinda Fredericks

:51:07. > :51:14.has popped off and is going to lead the horse home. Yes, quite sore and

:51:15. > :51:21.that's very bad luck for Lucinda Fredericks.

:51:22. > :51:29.Well now Tim Lips has come home. This is a good day building for the

:51:30. > :51:40.Netherlands. A grim mace and a smile as he finishes. Two for the Dutch.

:51:41. > :51:43.So, one still to come. Two good rounds. That is an

:51:44. > :51:56.indication of sheer joy. He's gone wide. The good thing about

:51:57. > :52:01.that is you get a more narrow ditch rather than angling the ditch. A bit

:52:02. > :52:06.of time-wasting. That is the only problem there.

:52:07. > :52:12.Has this man got enough horse left to pick it up and get to it? He

:52:13. > :52:23.certainly could do. It feels like Badminton! It was so

:52:24. > :52:27.big. My horse is such a good jumper and finally it felt quite easy.

:52:28. > :52:33.Before I thought, why am I doing this? Why do I want to ride bad mip

:52:34. > :52:42.on the? When I pass the finishing line I want to go again.

:52:43. > :52:48.It is interesting hearing Tim. This a surprise - he's going to have

:52:49. > :52:52.to work. He's gone the long way. Are we seeing the 2011 situation

:52:53. > :52:57.returning, with with horses getting weary towards the end of the course?

:52:58. > :52:59.As we heard Tim Lips say, they knew it was big, it was Badminton and

:53:00. > :53:03.they were positive and they have it was big, it was Badminton and

:53:04. > :53:09.ride and this man is joining them - Paul Tapner, going for home.

:53:10. > :53:13.Oh, and a bit of aggressive riding there!

:53:14. > :53:16.He just looked as if he went a little bit wild on this stride. The

:53:17. > :53:25.horse couldn't make that. Fortunately both horse and rider up

:53:26. > :53:32.and OK. Done a great job in the dressage.

:53:33. > :53:37.Look at it again! You see him accelerating. Thought he had seen

:53:38. > :53:39.the stride and thank goodness the pins gave way on that fence, that

:53:40. > :53:45.would have been a nasty fall. pins gave way on that fence, that

:53:46. > :53:51.is both get up and of walk away safely. That is a very good example

:53:52. > :54:06.of what the pins are all about. That was absolutely a classic

:54:07. > :54:10.demonstration and sad sadly he walks home.

:54:11. > :54:19.Time is getting difficult. It is now the Rolex boxes.

:54:20. > :54:24.He's going to be, I would think, between 40-50, maybe 50-60 seconds

:54:25. > :54:31.over the time. Of course he had that very good dressage score of 48.8. In

:54:32. > :54:39.fact, even better than that in the 36 it was. Those are the penalty

:54:40. > :54:44.scores clocking up, as they add 0.4 for every second that elapses. Ears

:54:45. > :54:53.pricked. That is good enough for the lead? Yes, it is. 56.4! Paul Tapner

:54:54. > :54:56.says, "I am back! " And Coolio for Ireland with Kyle. Another one to

:54:57. > :55:12.leave a leg. I think with the middle element, if

:55:13. > :55:16.it had been there, they would have to come in shorter and pop that

:55:17. > :55:21.first log. As it is, you can see accelerates to a good stot, but the

:55:22. > :55:27.horse is not -- spot, but the horse is not quick enough in front and the

:55:28. > :55:34.two roll down that hill. Wow! Twice around the Olympics, Mark Kyle and

:55:35. > :55:37.Coolio walking home and another surprising sight on this

:55:38. > :55:45.cross-country course. You are in the lead. Have you done

:55:46. > :55:50.enough to stay there? There is a possibility somebody could go in

:55:51. > :55:53.front of me. If anybody can go faster than me, then they are a

:55:54. > :55:59.better horse on the day. I went as fast as my horse was physically

:56:00. > :56:03.capable of today. I have no qualms that. This course is causing

:56:04. > :56:07.problems. Hardly any riders getting around. Even the top ones are having

:56:08. > :56:12.problems because of the wind, because of the fences - no-one

:56:13. > :56:19.inside the time yet. Perhaps is this an opening for Tina Cook. She is

:56:20. > :56:25.riding her horse, known as Herman. When he was born they thought he was

:56:26. > :56:38.ugly and looked like Herman Monster. Well, beauty is as beauty does!

:56:39. > :56:59.So here is the home-bred of De Novo News. Just flies past that red flag!

:57:00. > :57:05.His eye was a bit to the right. That was good for Tina. Again he's

:57:06. > :57:10.hanging right there and took the red flag out. Needs to be straighter. It

:57:11. > :57:14.is a difficult one when you have a run-out so early. Do you stop and

:57:15. > :57:21.finish and go to another competition or do you persevere and see what the

:57:22. > :57:33.Here is an interested speak taor, horse's second Badminton.

:57:34. > :57:40.Here is an interested speak taor, the world chasm chasmfion Zara

:57:41. > :57:44.Phillips. Not fit enough yet. How many months has it been? Four

:57:45. > :57:48.months. Getting there. Kind Ofstedy. I didn't want to come here with not

:57:49. > :57:52.enough runs and not being fit enough. This is the top of the

:57:53. > :57:56.sport. You need to be as fit as you possibly can. We'll wait. It is a

:57:57. > :57:57.sport in which you have a lot of examples of

:57:58. > :58:02.sport in which you have a lot of children and come back to top-level

:58:03. > :58:04.competition. You have a lot of people to turn to for advice? It is

:58:05. > :58:11.great. Many said to me, Sarah people to turn to for advice? It is

:58:12. > :58:15.both of them said they had come back too early. You know, you can ride,

:58:16. > :58:20.but you're not very effective at the beginning, so you need to give your

:58:21. > :58:23.body time. It has been a massive help having those guys around.

:58:24. > :58:27.Lovely to see you here. Thank you very much. Tina Cook with De Novo

:58:28. > :58:40.News. Now at the mounded 18.

:58:41. > :58:48.Oneholds one's breath as they jump that first log. That was beautifully

:58:49. > :58:53.done. An unlucky 20 penalties will be on her mind as we see the

:58:54. > :59:03.American - an outstanding young rider at The Lake.

:59:04. > :59:12.I have to say The Lake is riding well.

:59:13. > :59:17.Still inside the optimum time. There'll be a few time faults for

:59:18. > :59:23.Tina. I don't think she'll be that worried. This horse, only 11, in

:59:24. > :59:26.terms of mileage is young. The horse has done very little wrong. . No,

:59:27. > :59:30.terms of mileage is young. The horse think she made the right decision to

:59:31. > :59:35.continue. It with us a silly run-out. I don't think Tina will be

:59:36. > :59:44.too worried about that. Disappointed, but not too worried.

:59:45. > :59:49.Merel Blom, she's at the Outlander Bank. A good positive approach. The

:59:50. > :59:51.positive approach seems to be working. That

:59:52. > :59:55.positive approach seems to be riding. As you said earlier, they

:59:56. > :00:00.have to tackle that bank and then worry about the Skinny. The time is

:00:01. > :00:04.not great, but that is really not what it is about now. It is about

:00:05. > :00:12.getting this horse around and getting its confidence and

:00:13. > :00:15.experience under the belt. A long way home from the

:00:16. > :00:19.combination. The crowd thin in here. A long way home from the

:00:20. > :00:23.I bet your bottom dollar it will be full when we get towards the end

:00:24. > :00:28.because there is still a lot of dra many in this competition -- drama in

:00:29. > :00:30.this competition for sure. It is Paul Tapner in front. As Tina comes

:00:31. > :00:40.home - a round in the Paul Tapner in front. As Tina comes

:00:41. > :01:07.Tina and her talents in a British squad is an advantage.

:01:08. > :01:12.There is only three strides there. You have to be quick in reactions to

:01:13. > :01:15.get away with that. You can see he is a long way off that. Manages to

:01:16. > :01:24.keep going, keeps his balance but there is no way he can get back to

:01:25. > :01:27.that. The ground actually, it is hard work but it is not jarring for

:01:28. > :01:31.them. I thought - you know what, let's keep going. This is what

:01:32. > :01:37.Badminton is going to be like for now. Let's jump that Vicarage Vee

:01:38. > :01:41.and some more difficult fences. He was super. I took the pace away.

:01:42. > :01:46.Well, there was no pace, really, I just wanted to jump around. Nice to

:01:47. > :01:51.hear the positive thoughts from Tina.

:01:52. > :01:56.Australian, Sam Griffiths now at the Lake.

:01:57. > :02:00.He jumps through there. Well, he is in a good position at the moment.

:02:01. > :02:10.He jumps through there. Well, he is 46.3, close enough as this

:02:11. > :02:12.He jumps through there. Well, he is competition is unfolding. Tee

:02:13. > :02:13.He jumps through there. Well, he is Coudray coming to the last. Not a

:02:14. > :02:19.bad time considering what we have seen today. Nobody has got near that

:02:20. > :02:25.opt minute time. One to go for Tiana. A talented horse. She will be

:02:26. > :02:33.happy with that. That's a good one for America. The leaderboard now

:02:34. > :02:39.looking pretty international. Sam Griffiths now coming to the big Vee.

:02:40. > :02:43.Oh, not the best stride there. He took the flag with him but got the

:02:44. > :02:47.right side of the flag. That's the most important thing and a quick

:02:48. > :03:07.turn. So good recovery there from Sam. Merel Blom on Rumour Has It. He

:03:08. > :03:11.has had good records on this course. Oh, another one there to hang a leg

:03:12. > :03:19.but fortunately recovered quickly and a good turn. Another near-miss,

:03:20. > :03:25.though. And those feet belong to Imperial Cavalier. Ridden by the

:03:26. > :03:31.great Marying King. One of the favourites away. Mary twice winner.

:03:32. > :03:36.Seven winners. My word, Mary has set off pretty quickly. Here is

:03:37. > :03:40.Seven winners. My word, Mary has set Blom now. Rumour Has It coming into

:03:41. > :03:46.the arena and the Dutch manager here will be absolutely overjoyed with

:03:47. > :03:48.his riders. The way this competition has gone, to have three from the

:03:49. > :03:51.Netherlands home clear, has gone, to have three from the

:03:52. > :03:55.expect them to be the top of the three in the world of dressage and

:03:56. > :03:59.show jumping, but not here. Today they have given a

:04:00. > :04:04.show jumping, but not here. Today demonstration. 73.8 and they go

:04:05. > :04:10.eighth and that's three now in the top nine. .

:04:11. > :04:12.Mary on imperial Cavalier. He certainly doesn't look his 17 years

:04:13. > :04:28.young. He is pulling away. The usual style of Mary - sit back

:04:29. > :04:32.and just steer. Sam Griffiths Paulank Brockagh in huntsman close.

:04:33. > :04:40.Certainly being very influential. He just squeezes inside that flag and

:04:41. > :04:45.then jumps the last well. Well this is one of the great sights in

:04:46. > :04:48.British sport, The Lake in front of Badminton House and the huge crowd

:04:49. > :04:53.waiting for one of their favourite riders. On her way is mayory King.

:04:54. > :04:58.52 years old now. She has completed the course 21 times. This is

:04:59. > :05:02.Imperial Cavalier which she rode into fifth place at the London

:05:03. > :05:07.Olympics. Coming through The Lake. Lovely. Showing all her experience.

:05:08. > :05:11.He nods a bit there on landing. Away she goes, with huge support, to

:05:12. > :05:17.fence 10. COMMENTATOR: Big crowds all around

:05:18. > :05:21.this park, despite the weather as Sam Griffiths rides her home. And

:05:22. > :05:27.this is a quick round. Sam Griffiths, who has twice ridden for

:05:28. > :05:33.Australia in the Olympics. Has had falls on both occasions. There is no

:05:34. > :05:38.doubt of his talent. Can he persuade the selectors to give him another

:05:39. > :05:45.chance. He is through the last. Australia definitely regrouping.

:05:46. > :05:50.They won three golds on the trot and are beginning to emerge as a strong

:05:51. > :05:56.nation. Oh, hang on, Mary, hang on there,

:05:57. > :05:59.keep going. That was quite impressive. Mary

:06:00. > :06:04.looked like a youngster there, I have to say, clinging on like a

:06:05. > :06:09.monkey. I'm not sure about the monkey bit but 52-year-old Mary was

:06:10. > :06:14.very quickly thinking then to avoid a jumping penalty and I think she's

:06:15. > :06:16.got away with it. There was a quick bit of thinking there from Mary and

:06:17. > :06:22.a brilliant piece of riding. You see bit of thinking there from Mary and

:06:23. > :06:27.stride there. The horse gets up there a bit short. Chips in here

:06:28. > :06:33.stride and almost gets stuck. But watch the horse's expression. Look

:06:34. > :06:40.at him, he just says, "Sit tight, mum." 17 and the old boy is staying

:06:41. > :06:46.in the right place to keep Mary on the plate. "I have done it. What do

:06:47. > :06:50.you want next?" He does look a bit surprised the horse, doesn't he? !

:06:51. > :06:55.Lucy Jackson from New Zealand. Born in Britain. Went to New Zealand to

:06:56. > :06:59.do physiotherapy and got New Zealand nationality and they are

:07:00. > :07:06.benefitting. This tall young lady is going very well indeed. Lucy

:07:07. > :07:13.Jackson, 47.2 dressage. Mayor joy back into a good gallop now at the

:07:14. > :07:17.Vicarage ditch. Showing all her experience there. Quick turn back.

:07:18. > :07:24.Lovely. Oh, loss of balance on landing, Mary.

:07:25. > :07:28.This mirage pond has ridden well today, despite the fact that middle

:07:29. > :07:35.element is pretty serious. Well, that was not what I expected, Mike.

:07:36. > :07:41.Was that your fault? Commentator's problem? Probably. I hope she is not

:07:42. > :07:46.listening. Well, is Mary? No, hand goes up. What a disappointment. Had

:07:47. > :07:50.last year off. She was so hoping to come back and win another World

:07:51. > :07:58.Equestrian Games gold medal. That has to be a doubt now, as you see

:07:59. > :08:04.yet another star walking hope in the Mitsubishi motors Badminton 2014.

:08:05. > :08:13.New Zealand's Lucy Jackson. A nice bit of extra push there on

:08:14. > :08:18.that last stride. I had a bit of a strange jump

:08:19. > :08:20.through the owl hole but we kept it together. I think that knocked his

:08:21. > :08:24.confidence and we had together. I think that knocked his

:08:25. > :08:26.at another unbrushed together. I think that knocked his

:08:27. > :08:28.drop in the water. I thought - there is knob point going on as a horse

:08:29. > :08:30.which has been so great is knob point going on as a horse

:08:31. > :08:35.through his career. is knob point going on as a horse

:08:36. > :08:38.Well now, the individual silver medallist at London.

:08:39. > :08:44.Riding a new horse, is Sara. She medallist at London.

:08:45. > :08:50.a syndicate to buy it through Facebook, getting enough money. This

:08:51. > :08:55.horse used to be called Mrs Medicot. Now called Reality and going well.

:08:56. > :08:57.horse used to be called Mrs Medicot. Lucy Jackson coming to the

:08:58. > :09:02.horse used to be called Mrs Medicot. gates. It has been

:09:03. > :09:07.horse used to be called Mrs Medicot. riders down on this course which is

:09:08. > :09:12.what Giuseppe wanted. What he was looking for, rather than galloping

:09:13. > :09:17.at all the fences and this little logpile. It was a surprising jump.

:09:18. > :09:29.Nothing to look at but it's been pretty seriously ridden in all sorts

:09:30. > :09:35.of different ways today, Mike. Well, now this girl very experienced.

:09:36. > :09:42.She had an individual silver. Could have been gold in London, but she

:09:43. > :09:49.didn't quite make that. And Oliver Townend on the great Armada. Oh,

:09:50. > :09:56.what scope. He looked as though he was just in his school at home

:09:57. > :10:00.there, having a little play. Lugsy Jackson - smiles all over her face.

:10:01. > :10:06.That's her best performance at Badminton. A young lady on the edge

:10:07. > :10:11.of selection. She was a reserve for London but she put her name in the

:10:12. > :10:15.book for France now. Lucy Jackson moves into the top ten.

:10:16. > :10:19.She was 21st after dressage and that's the story all the way

:10:20. > :10:24.through. Tim Price has moved up from had 1st after dressage and more

:10:25. > :10:30.riders are not finishing this cross country course than finishing.

:10:31. > :10:39.Conditions really tough. So Reality now in Hunts mans Close.

:10:40. > :10:43.Thanks too 45,000 Facebook friends syndicating this horse and raising

:10:44. > :10:48.would you believe over ?75,000 to buy this horse, Reality. Going the

:10:49. > :10:55.long way. Playing safe. Still motoring on. She is right in touch.

:10:56. > :11:00.Oh, she is not now. She is the wrong side of that flag and gone down.

:11:01. > :11:03.Well, that will not even be a dispute over the Grand Jury with the

:11:04. > :11:08.flag because that fault sees her walking home. Watch it again. She is

:11:09. > :11:12.a bit to the right. You can see the horse drifting right. Definitely the

:11:13. > :11:17.wrong side of that flag as he jumps on top of t and rather than jumping

:11:18. > :11:24.off, sort of fell off. Keeps its balance but poor Sara hits the deck.

:11:25. > :11:28.Well, good to see horse and rider non-the worse at the moment. Despite

:11:29. > :11:30.the number of incidences we are seeing, horses and riders getting up

:11:31. > :11:36.and walking away. Now seeing, horses and riders getting up

:11:37. > :11:44.Townend, Armada. Remember he won in 2009. He has been in the wilderness

:11:45. > :11:51.over the last two or three years but the man looks steely determined this

:11:52. > :11:58.afternoon. Pippa Funnell. Redesigned. The horse she finished

:11:59. > :12:06.fifth in Kentucky in 2010. Owned by the same owners as another horse on

:12:07. > :12:11.which she won here. Away she goes. A disappointing dressage. The horse

:12:12. > :12:14.was extremely tense. I'm quite surprised in many respects that she

:12:15. > :12:19.is running this horse across country. But she has realised that

:12:20. > :12:25.this is so open, that if she could get the best out of this horse - and

:12:26. > :12:30.at his best he is a really good ride across the country - she could still

:12:31. > :12:35.make up what she lost in the dressage Well we are right at the

:12:36. > :12:38.top of the course for Oliver. This is where the horses have been

:12:39. > :12:43.getting weary. He is riding strongly to get over that wall. This horse is

:12:44. > :12:48.jumping. That's what counts. 9 jumping. That's what counts. 9

:12:49. > :12:53.horse, as long as they want to get to the other side, and there is not

:12:54. > :13:00.an issue about how tired the horse is, there is no reason they

:13:01. > :13:04.shouldn't continue. Redesigned at the Lake now with Pippa. . That was

:13:05. > :13:09.brilliant in but almost the Lake now with Pippa. . That was

:13:10. > :13:14.short, the striding in there. She angled into the water, which was

:13:15. > :13:19.great to see. Very quick. Oliver Townend. The normer Andrew

:13:20. > :13:22.great to see. Very quick. Oliver ride, now over the last of the

:13:23. > :13:30.combinations. One fence left. 43 jumping efforts on this Giuseppe

:13:31. > :13:35.Della Chiesa course. It will really causing some scratching of the

:13:36. > :13:38.heads. But there is no doubt Oliver Townend has answered all the

:13:39. > :13:41.questions set. This man could be back. He won two of the three legs.

:13:42. > :13:47.He had a Burley win and couldn't make it in Kentucky. And at his

:13:48. > :13:50.best, he could be another strong candidate for Britain. Good time. He

:13:51. > :14:05.says He goes fourth.

:14:06. > :14:06.Well, Mark Todd this horse's first four-star but he thinks so much of

:14:07. > :14:17.it. You looked pumped as you came across

:14:18. > :14:23.the finish line. Well done. Yes, it is a gentlemen genuine horse. I have

:14:24. > :14:27.never feel him bottom out. I felt tired. He felt fairly unconscious

:14:28. > :14:32.coming up to the Quarry. All of a sudden, he took a big breath, picked

:14:33. > :14:42.himself up and ran home. He is just go very good.

:14:43. > :14:45.Mark Todd at the Lake. Leonidas was so impressive when he

:14:46. > :14:48.won the big competition. He is in trouble. He lost his balance in and

:14:49. > :14:53.now he is in deep trouble. He lost his balance in and

:14:54. > :14:56.And it does get deep there. It certainly does get dee. I thought

:14:57. > :15:02.Mark was going swimming for a second. And I get he thought he was,

:15:03. > :15:08.too. Now he has to re-route and go the long way. That is a difficult

:15:09. > :15:12.route to fathom out, I find. It does take a long time. He is quickly back

:15:13. > :15:15.in his rhythm but for a moment or two, the

:15:16. > :15:19.in his rhythm but for a moment or was going to disappear and submerge.

:15:20. > :15:37.Lost the reins at the last moment and got in trouble.

:15:38. > :15:42.The first one to do! Isn't that - it is very narrow, but it goes up

:15:43. > :15:47.steeply on the left. A big route comes out it is much, much bigger.

:15:48. > :15:53.You can see her turning quickly. I have to say, if that middle

:15:54. > :15:58.element had been there, they would have turned tighter than that. She

:15:59. > :16:01.did give the horse plenty of time, but it didn't work. The medical team

:16:02. > :16:06.quickly on hand. I don't think but it didn't work. The medical team

:16:07. > :16:14.any the worse - she's on her feet. She will certainly reflect on that

:16:15. > :16:21.ride. Out goes Redesigned. Here is a horse that is again looking a shade

:16:22. > :16:26.on the weary side. I think he got away with a white flag. I think he

:16:27. > :16:31.just did. I have not seen Toddy work so hard for a long time. Quite a lot

:16:32. > :16:41.for an old man! It is the second ride now Forte Taylor. Thistledown

:16:42. > :16:48.Poposki -- for Izzy Taylor. Thistledown Poposki. Barely a third

:16:49. > :16:53.have got around without faults. This last section could shake things up.

:16:54. > :17:00.William Fox-Pitt has been waiting, watching for his moment. He pulled

:17:01. > :17:05.out his fishss t horse. This last section of riders includes

:17:06. > :17:14.Montgomerie and the man going last of all, the man who has never won

:17:15. > :17:25.bad Badminton. And the world's number one, William

:17:26. > :17:43.Fox-Pitt away a. He -- away. As home comes, Mark

:17:44. > :17:48.Toddoat on Leonidas II. Well over the Mark Todd.

:17:49. > :17:53.He has Leonidas II in 25th place at the moment.

:17:54. > :17:58.Izzy Taylor had a great ride on her first horse. Here she is on her

:17:59. > :18:10.second one, having an even better ride.

:18:11. > :18:17.second one, having an even better We got around and finished I was not

:18:18. > :18:34.one of my better rides it has been an abouting

:18:35. > :18:40.Izzy Taylor coming home for the second time. I think, looking back

:18:41. > :18:42.quickly through the records. She's is the only one still to have two

:18:43. > :18:49.horses in the competition. What an horses in the competition. What an

:18:50. > :18:54.achievement! And this a first timer owned by Lady Ann Whitely. Her

:18:55. > :18:58.husband chairman of the sport for many years. A great contrib burter.

:18:59. > :19:04.This is a great -- contributor. This is a great performance. This first

:19:05. > :19:16.timer does it clear. And William at

:19:17. > :19:24.Such style! Such control. Effortless! Yes, don't want to spoil

:19:25. > :19:33.his luck, but this man looks on fire. Now Nicola Wilson. A very

:19:34. > :19:44.popular lady. You might remember the great opposition buzz. This, an

:19:45. > :19:49.exciting young horse. It is only a ten-year-old.

:19:50. > :19:55.William coming to the water combination. It has

:19:56. > :19:55.William coming to the water trouble all day. Hopefully for

:19:56. > :20:07.William it will be OK. Of great! You don't see too many coloured

:20:08. > :20:13.horses at this level. This, a horse with a lovely attitude and lovely

:20:14. > :20:20.jump too at the Escalator. A lovely, positive ride from this lady.

:20:21. > :20:25.William Fox-Pitt now approaches the gates.

:20:26. > :20:33.William Fox-Pitt now approaches the and the jockey ready for the last.

:20:34. > :20:41.30-30 counting down. It is not the quickest. Of course he has that good

:20:42. > :20:43.dressage of 41. He puts six strides behind these gates.

:20:44. > :20:48.Now we have got Nicola turning in behind these gates.

:20:49. > :20:57.She is riding for her life. And the mare is responding.

:20:58. > :21:01.She had two rides but withdraw her first horse, not having been quite

:21:02. > :21:08.right this morning. Just the one ride for Nicola, as way agoes the

:21:09. > :21:12.dressage leader. Montgomery, the man from tennis.

:21:13. > :21:29.dressage leader. Montgomery, the man He had -- Texas.

:21:30. > :21:36.He gets the extra stride in on that turn. Can he make the next one? Yes!

:21:37. > :21:45.He will be very happy with. That very few a now taking that direct

:21:46. > :21:50.route. Oh, and the pins have dropped there.

:21:51. > :21:57.If the grand jury felt that release of those pins would have stopped a

:21:58. > :22:03.fall... There is a fall. That is William Fox-Pitt. What is happening

:22:04. > :22:07.to this competition, Badminton 2014? It is a whooping fence, but that was

:22:08. > :22:12.definitely the biggest surprise of the day! There has not been any

:22:13. > :22:17.trouble there all day. They have all jumped that fence, even if they were

:22:18. > :22:21.getting weary on their legs. A great disappointment to see William and

:22:22. > :22:25.Parklane Hawk having to walk home. A huge shock because he had this lead

:22:26. > :22:30.at the end of the day. Very much written all over him - the way he

:22:31. > :22:35.had been gone - the way he had gone, rather! It looked as though he must

:22:36. > :22:40.have got a bit close. He hit the fence on the way up with his right

:22:41. > :22:46.front leg. And it just tipped him side way. Well, well, well!

:22:47. > :23:03.What else is in score. Here is the American at the lake.

:23:04. > :23:04.Clark Montgomery. Very measured through

:23:05. > :23:11.Beltane Queen - this could be a great one.

:23:12. > :23:16.This long route is not looking that safe either.

:23:17. > :23:20.She's taken the long route, but she did one of the quickest turns

:23:21. > :23:27.between those two elements. Didn't waste any time.

:23:28. > :23:31.Oh, yieks! -- yikes. What side of the flag was

:23:32. > :23:35.she? I think she was on the left. That is one for the grand jury to

:23:36. > :23:39.have a look at. And the grand jury have been very busy. Now it is Clark

:23:40. > :23:49.Montgomery, driving on for the vik rarge vee. Gets a -- Vickarage Vee.

:23:50. > :23:52.It is a tough line of fences down here. He is at the Mirage Pond. We

:23:53. > :24:05.have seen plenty of action here. The time looks good. He's about just

:24:06. > :24:13.under halfway. He's literally metres under halfway. Nicola Wilson and

:24:14. > :24:18.Beltane Queen come to the Rolex Rolex Presentation Boxes.

:24:19. > :24:22.She will be thrilled with this. Very inexperienced, two first time

:24:23. > :24:26.Badminton horses here. First one did not start cross-country, but this

:24:27. > :24:28.one has and has shown there is a lot to look forward to. Really enjoyed

:24:29. > :24:36.it, this little horse. ??FORCEWHITE It is all for an

:24:37. > :24:39.exciting cause in the future, I feel. Over the last and I think

:24:40. > :24:43.you'll see the feel. Over the last and I think

:24:44. > :24:49.Yes! There it is! She goes 11th feel. Over the last and I think

:24:50. > :24:54.the moment. Tim Price and feel. Over the last and I think

:24:55. > :25:01.The Lake. Turn, turn u turn! Oh -- turn, turn,

:25:02. > :25:06.turn! Oh, good horse. The crowd have got what they wanted, not what Tim

:25:07. > :25:10.Price would have wanted though! I think he's going to stay there. We

:25:11. > :25:14.are now to the last horse or two in what has been an amazing day of

:25:15. > :25:25.sport. As soon as he landed, he let go of

:25:26. > :25:30.the left rein. He left his back legs and fired poor Tim into the water.

:25:31. > :25:38.Oh, that is so cold! Well, that is an interesting picture

:25:39. > :25:42.because that is the gel gate who looks at -- the delegate who looks

:25:43. > :25:46.at problems for the grand jury. I think that will be about the flag.

:25:47. > :25:52.There is her husband. They will be looking at the flag in Hunt

:25:53. > :26:00.Huntsmans Close. They will be talking about the pins. It is all

:26:01. > :26:06.eyes on the last, Andrew Nicholson with Nereo. A great combination to

:26:07. > :26:08.finish the day here in the cross-country. It has been a

:26:09. > :26:12.thrilling day of cross-country riding. I don't think I have

:26:13. > :26:14.thrilling day of cross-country the score board quite like it for a

:26:15. > :26:19.long, long time. Certainly the dressage has not been that

:26:20. > :26:26.influential. Here is the dressage leader. He's in hunt huntsmans

:26:27. > :26:31.Close. He's not looking to respond that quickly and that is the result.

:26:32. > :26:36.Remember, this is what happened to his first ride. Now, why is that?

:26:37. > :26:39.Remember, this is what happened to that because the horse is not fit

:26:40. > :26:43.enough? What is the reason for that? I know this horse has had a wind

:26:44. > :26:52.operation in the past. I don't know whether that has affected it. He has

:26:53. > :27:00.a band bandage railing -- trailing as well. We talk about being flat,

:27:01. > :27:08.but there's a long climb from the Mirage Pond up to the Quarry. It has

:27:09. > :27:10.been telling on the horses today. We look again. It is easy to

:27:11. > :27:15.been telling on the horses today. We after, but this horse was not

:27:16. > :27:19.responding and instead of being positive there, he was thinking a

:27:20. > :27:23.little backwards, probably wondering whether he should be going on. And

:27:24. > :27:27.the leader is out. Is this the opportunity for this man? 33

:27:28. > :27:31.completions here at Badminton. He's been second, third, fourth and fifth

:27:32. > :27:37.on different horses, but this horse won him a bronze individualally and

:27:38. > :27:42.a team bronze in Kentucky. He was the fourth individualally in London,

:27:43. > :27:48.but won a team bronze. The dream would be a Badminton win. Will this

:27:49. > :27:55.be his year? He's looking pretty calculated about it all.

:27:56. > :27:59.The flags are going regularly. A lot of these fences are incredibly

:28:00. > :28:03.skinny. It doesn't matter. You pay no attention as a rider, so long as

:28:04. > :28:09.you are at the right side of them. This man has got better and better.

:28:10. > :28:14.Now over 50. Still improving A great team of horses. Covering the ground

:28:15. > :28:20.here - looks full of running. Turning to that New Pond, which has

:28:21. > :28:27.jumped so well. Oh, and that rail's gone! Wow! That

:28:28. > :28:33.is a surprise! And so has Andrew Nicholson! Can you believe it?

:28:34. > :28:38.I don't think I've ever seen that from Andrew to get tipped out from

:28:39. > :28:43.the side. An unseated rider, as we call it in racing. I have to say,

:28:44. > :28:47.that pin did break, but the horse hardly touched that rail. It should

:28:48. > :28:52.not have gone that easily. This is unusual, the horse leaves its front

:28:53. > :28:59.right leg and leaves Andrew no chance. Well, a day of drama right

:29:00. > :29:03.to the very end. But indeed no horse is hurt. No rider is hurt. Well, if

:29:04. > :29:07.you wonder what this massive crowd are looking at, it is the score

:29:08. > :29:12.board after the cross-country. They have seen the thrills and spills out

:29:13. > :29:17.there. Eliminated, retired, withdrawn, from 83 starters, just 35

:29:18. > :29:21.are left. And this man is in prime position.

:29:22. > :29:26.Paul Tapner, who has one fence in happened going into the final

:29:27. > :29:27.showjumping phase. In many ways it is unfamiliar.

:29:28. > :29:49.Tim Price up to second. Nicola Wilson was given 21

:29:50. > :29:56.penalties. She moves down to 25th. In fact, this morning of Nicola

:29:57. > :30:01.Wilson pulled out Beltane Queen. You have to prove your horse is well and

:30:02. > :30:08.fit before they go in for the showjumping.

:30:09. > :30:16.There were looked weary this morning. That will

:30:17. > :30:18.have an affect today. A lot of discussion about the cross country.

:30:19. > :30:22.Some saying chaos and too tough. discussion about the cross country.

:30:23. > :30:26.Others say it was like it used to be. Like the good, old days. It

:30:27. > :30:29.doesn't matter where you were in the dressage, you had the chance of

:30:30. > :30:32.winning if you could go fast and clear in cross country. I have to

:30:33. > :30:36.say there were some pictures yesterday that weren't ideal for the

:30:37. > :30:41.sport. There were 50-odd horse that is didn't finish and that's not

:30:42. > :30:45.really good statistics. . I don't think the course was too tough. It

:30:46. > :30:49.was a fair course but the cumulative effect, nearly all had a riser or a

:30:50. > :30:55.dip in front of them and it was having an effect. I wobdser if some

:30:56. > :30:59.of the horsers were not fit enough. Now Paul Tapner has a lead. He could

:31:00. > :31:03.have a fence down and win. But it is hard to hold on to that lead when

:31:04. > :31:06.you come into the show jumping? Are you suggesting something there? I

:31:07. > :31:09.was six times in the lead. Three times I won and three times I blew

:31:10. > :31:13.it big time. It is very difficult. There is a lot of pressure on the

:31:14. > :31:18.riders when they come into this phase. Paul Tapner's horse is a good

:31:19. > :31:23.jumper. He has one jump in hand but the horse looked a bit weary

:31:24. > :31:31.yesterday. There are really good horses behind him. And Pippa

:31:32. > :31:38.Funnell. The horses sometimes give much more than the other horses. I

:31:39. > :31:42.would love to see her win. Bred for show jumping with Pippa's influence

:31:43. > :31:52.from her husband. Well it is four penalty points for a

:31:53. > :31:56.fence knocked down. The time is fight. 90 seconds, a

:31:57. > :32:01.minute-and-a-half. For every second over that, you pick up one penalty

:32:02. > :32:11.point T could yet change. Let's see the action unfold: -- it

:32:12. > :32:18.30-year-old Harry Meade. The fairy story. Remember, he smashed his

:32:19. > :32:20.elbows last August. Made a wonderful recovery through grit and

:32:21. > :32:28.determination. Currently lying eighth. 67. 4. He has three fences

:32:29. > :32:32.in hand to stay in eighth place. On Wild Lone. A brill yapt round

:32:33. > :32:38.yesterday. It is a horse he thinks an awful lot of. -- a brilliant

:32:39. > :32:45.round. He has to put it together here. This course has taken its toll

:32:46. > :32:49.this morning. Very twisty which usually helps event horses. It stops

:32:50. > :32:54.them getting long and from the after the rigours of the cross country.

:32:55. > :32:56.This next fence is a flimsy vertical fence. Not a lot to look at. They

:32:57. > :33:16.then double back to the left. Then 24 this next fence, interesting

:33:17. > :33:21.enough, Harry took his horse right down into the corner. That fence

:33:22. > :33:26.goes right into the corner and into the crowd. One or two horses have

:33:27. > :33:31.been distracted by the horse and having -- by the crowd and having

:33:32. > :33:35.that down. And the final line. Just, remember, we have had no clear

:33:36. > :33:42.rounds yet. One with three time faults. Oh.

:33:43. > :33:49.Just the one down. 71.4 for Harry Meade and Wild Lone.

:33:50. > :33:56.He will stay eighth. Will 71.4 for Harry Meade and Wild Lone.

:33:57. > :34:06.higher? He was the youngest man ever to complete five Badmintons by 25.

:34:07. > :34:10.He was a little bit off that first one, the horse dropped on the back

:34:11. > :34:15.rail. But that was a brilliant round from Harry. One of the best we have

:34:16. > :34:22.seen all day. I quite agree. Harry Meade really has really come of age

:34:23. > :34:23.here. He's ridden some good rounds around here but this is the best,

:34:24. > :34:51.for sure. Well, there is no doubt that show

:34:52. > :34:54.jumping has been part of this young man's career. We made predictions in

:34:55. > :35:02.the past and they have gone out of the window here. It is Tim Lips from

:35:03. > :35:08.the Netherlands with three in the top 20 here.

:35:09. > :35:15.Netherlands and New Zealand have three through the last 20. Britain

:35:16. > :35:24.got four. This is a horse that yesterday went well indeed. 66. A 5

:35:25. > :35:29.he got. Lying in 7th. It's not been the best show jumper in the world.

:35:30. > :35:33.Tim's done a lot of show jumping through his young life. So this

:35:34. > :35:45.horse can have the odd fence He gave the triple bar a lot of

:35:46. > :35:50.height. That was one of the best rounds I have seen Tim ride, cross

:35:51. > :36:01.country, yesterday. Very mature, very professional.

:36:02. > :36:11.That goes too. That puts him below Harry Meade and Wild Lone. He has

:36:12. > :36:17.crept up a place. In 7th place, Harry goes on to ?15,000 as a prize

:36:18. > :36:24.pot. The most valuable Badminton ever. ?80,000 to the winner. !

:36:25. > :36:27.I remember back in the '80s winning it and the first prize was ?6,000. A

:36:28. > :36:33.bit of a change. Three down. And jumps the last.

:36:34. > :36:43.78.5. So he drops Three down. And jumps the last.

:36:44. > :36:53.Meade comes up. This is the most extraordinary

:36:54. > :36:57.storey. Harry Meade when you still had your arms in braces in January,

:36:58. > :37:01.did you ever imagine you would finish top 7 in Badminton? I didn't.

:37:02. > :37:06.It was just a dream that I had to come back here. This is my 9th

:37:07. > :37:10.Badminton. I thought I might not get here again. I stubbornly thought if

:37:11. > :37:14.I was going to be able it start riding again, I would focus

:37:15. > :37:18.everything towards this week but it was a distant goal. Your wife,

:37:19. > :37:22.Rosie, she deserves a lot of credit? . She has been a star. She tries to

:37:23. > :37:28.shrink from the limelight. She has . She has been a star. She tries to

:37:29. > :37:34.any of this without her, she looked after me for months. And

:37:35. > :37:37.any of this without her, she looked and two small children. A great

:37:38. > :37:40.performance. You got a warm applause from the crowd. Rightly so.

:37:41. > :37:45.performance. You got a warm applause done Thank you. Well, back inside

:37:46. > :37:53.the ring, one of the great show jumpers from around the world. Pippa

:37:54. > :37:58.Funnell. Two European titles and of course, won Championship medals on

:37:59. > :38:05.this young ten-year-old, Billy Beware, owned by Jonathan and Jane

:38:06. > :38:10.Clark by a very good horse Kenan. It is one of the best stallions in the

:38:11. > :38:19.world. He produced the Olympic champion. Billy Beware, 66.3 and he

:38:20. > :38:24.is in 6th. And there is now just a fence covering the next five riders

:38:25. > :38:29.to Pippa. It's absolutely vital now every fence down could be very

:38:30. > :38:38.costly. Or a clear could take you right up the leaderboard. He looked

:38:39. > :38:41.so impressive impressive at the three-star last year when he won

:38:42. > :38:46.this, lovely young horse. He jumped a clear round there. It is the only

:38:47. > :38:50.three-star, three day event and we heard Pippa saying that. So it is a

:38:51. > :38:55.big question this horse this week, and he certainly has risen to the

:38:56. > :39:02.challenge. One of the lovely stud horses that William and Pippa are so

:39:03. > :39:07.involved with these days. Oh, just ran a little bit long. That was just

:39:08. > :39:12.a green mistake, really. We could see yesterday, he got a little long

:39:13. > :39:17.and a little argumentative at times with Pippa. The same thing, a little

:39:18. > :39:23.bit happening here. It is just lack of experience. He has such a good

:39:24. > :39:25.jump. Still just ahead of Harry Meade but if she has another, it

:39:26. > :39:38.will be Harry who benefits. Pippa done a lot of show jumping on

:39:39. > :39:45.the young horses of the Billy Stud and it has shown. She has four time

:39:46. > :39:51.faults, though. 74. 3. She does drop below Harry Meade. Wild Lone comes

:39:52. > :39:52.up to 6th. He has jumped two places and Pippa Funnell drops down one

:39:53. > :39:59.place. A little bit running on into that

:40:00. > :40:03.fence. You can see Pippa trying say, "Steady, wait for me." But a

:40:04. > :40:11.little bit overenthusiastic. say, "Steady, wait for me." But a

:40:12. > :40:13.will be thrilled with him. What a star for the future that is. It is

:40:14. > :40:17.great to see Pippa right back star for the future that is. It is

:40:18. > :40:21.top of the tree. I couldn't agree more. Such a talented rider

:40:22. > :40:29.top of the tree. I couldn't agree still riding as well as ever.

:40:30. > :40:36.top of the tree. I couldn't agree now it is time for the next horse.

:40:37. > :40:42.top of the tree. I couldn't agree Sam Griffiths riding Paulank

:40:43. > :40:50.Brockagh. He went well yesterday to finish finish 5th place on 63.9.

:40:51. > :41:02.He's now just a little over two fences behind the lead, so very

:41:03. > :41:07.close. He's got two fences ahead of Harry Meade. Oh, I was just thinking

:41:08. > :41:12.he jumped the first three fences so well, so big and lots of air and he

:41:13. > :41:18.rattles the fourth one, but it stays up. Sam is certainly working hard

:41:19. > :41:31.trying to get everything out of this horse. So often when the horses have

:41:32. > :41:39.been cross country they can get a little bit flat. It is nice to see

:41:40. > :41:43.that the horses are actually keeping their rocks under them on some of

:41:44. > :41:47.these turns, but it is not helping all the time. In fact, if he does

:41:48. > :42:03.have another fence down, Meade will go up again, with just half a point.

:42:04. > :42:14.The time is going to be all right, I think. He has done a good job. A

:42:15. > :42:19.very good job. 67.9. Nothing to add for time. So, he stays fifth for

:42:20. > :42:27.Australia. Australia with two in the top five. Well, a fence down and

:42:28. > :42:31.time faults for pip fa funnel. You are cross with yourself but the

:42:32. > :42:36.horse is fantastic. -- Pippa Funnell. He was fantastic. That

:42:37. > :42:44.phase I rode him so badly. I think it has been a while since I have

:42:45. > :42:48.been like that. I'm ashamed of myself. For a young horse and with

:42:49. > :42:52.such little experience he has, I'm delighted with him. And bred at

:42:53. > :43:02.home. He is one of the family. Yes, he is the first. He is the first

:43:03. > :43:09.Billy around Badminton. He has answered all the questions. Really

:43:10. > :43:14.exciting. He is named Gorgeous by a dear friend of ours who passed away

:43:15. > :43:23.a couple of years ago. She said to me, "He will be a superstar", and he

:43:24. > :43:31.is. Here is a man who knows what it is to win Badminton. Oliver Townend

:43:32. > :43:37.with Armada. They dug deep yesterday. They both did. A steely

:43:38. > :43:41.performance. 62.7. In 4th place. Just 14 time faults. He is really

:43:42. > :43:48.very much in touch. He is on 42.7. He is just a little bit more than

:43:49. > :43:54.one fence behind the leader. Anything that happens now throws

:43:55. > :43:59.this 2014 title wide, wide open. Well, one away so far. Such a good

:44:00. > :44:05.jumper this horse. So brilliant cross country but he has got this

:44:06. > :44:10.enormous stride and sometimes his stride takes over and you can see

:44:11. > :44:15.when he hit that upright, he got nool a little bit hollow in position

:44:16. > :44:23.-- he got in a little bit hollow. He dropped his back legs. That's Oliver

:44:24. > :44:27.trying to contain that canter. It is fair to say, Ian, this is a horse

:44:28. > :44:31.that came out of the Andrew Nicholson yard. Andrew always had a

:44:32. > :44:39.job to jump clear rounds on this horse. He has never been easy.

:44:40. > :44:48.Ollie, too, has found him difficult. He has eight to add. He drops down

:44:49. > :44:55.below Sam Griffiths. Still a while behind, Wild Lone but one more would

:44:56. > :45:02.put Wild Lone up another for Harry Meade. The time is good and he jumps

:45:03. > :45:07.it. A good round for Ollie despite having fences down. It is not that

:45:08. > :45:12.clear. Eight. It could have been worse. He goes down to fifth. Sam

:45:13. > :45:15.Griffiths comes up to 4th. Three left to jump. One for France, one

:45:16. > :45:22.for New Zealand and one for Australia. Sam Griffiths of

:45:23. > :45:26.Australia is our leader. It is taking some jumping out there? After

:45:27. > :45:30.running so hard around the cross country yesterday, they need to be

:45:31. > :45:35.special horses today. I'm welling up. My mare tried so hard for me.

:45:36. > :45:52.She was a star. I couldn't ask any more of her. #

:45:53. > :46:00.Doesn't he come through time and time again -- doesn't it come

:46:01. > :46:04.through time and time again that these riders worship these horses.

:46:05. > :46:09.The love and care and attention that goes into these horses is pretty

:46:10. > :46:12.special. It is. You know, the emotion we've seen from some of

:46:13. > :46:15.these top riders, they are professionals, but they love their

:46:16. > :46:19.horses and they appreciate what their horses give them. There's no

:46:20. > :46:23.question these horses give us a lot. They give us everything they have

:46:24. > :46:32.and an enormous amount of pleasure to boot. Le le le, the -- Pascal

:46:33. > :46:39.Leroy. Another one who has done well. 56 years old and with Minos

:46:40. > :46:42.Leroy. Another one who has done Petra. He is owned by Pascal and his

:46:43. > :46:49.wife. He jumped a very stylish round. He had a 47.3 dressage.

:46:50. > :46:58.Across the country, just added 15.2 to claim third place.

:46:59. > :47:07.If he jumps a clear round then it is game on to beat Tim Price and Paul

:47:08. > :47:14.Tapner. There's nothing in it. France won - the only French winner

:47:15. > :47:17.here at Badminton. This partnership looked so good

:47:18. > :47:22.yesterday. Never looked in a hurry. It was so sort of non-French if you

:47:23. > :47:27.like, in the way he rode cross-country, because brilliant

:47:28. > :47:29.rider and brilliant... Oh! And that was just a classic miss, I am

:47:30. > :47:41.afraid. 66.5. Still stays in third place.

:47:42. > :48:21.Doesn't know! This is the the last time he might

:48:22. > :48:26.get a time fault and he does. Oliver Townend moves up, so does Harry

:48:27. > :48:34.Meade. Oliver Townend, second, with two to jump and Harry Meade third.

:48:35. > :48:40.He just didn't get it right there at all. The horse touched down and had

:48:41. > :48:46.no choice but to crash through the fence.

:48:47. > :48:50.Out here in the collecting ring you can see Paul Tapner warming up.

:48:51. > :48:53.He'll be last to go. The leading Britain, whatever happens will be

:48:54. > :49:00.Oliver Townend. You must be thrilled. In 2010 you had a fall you

:49:01. > :49:06.were pretty lucky to survive. Armada was a tricky horse in that phase. I

:49:07. > :49:17.didn't get the distance I wanted and he ended up with his head up.

:49:18. > :49:22.Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but - I am very pleased with the -- but

:49:23. > :49:29.I am very pleased with the overall result. Horses like Armada, a

:49:30. > :49:35.straightforward and at the same time her ability is fantastic and I thank

:49:36. > :49:39.to Mr Nicholson for letting me ride the horse and for the owner because

:49:40. > :49:46.without this horse I would not be here. It is good to see you back.

:49:47. > :49:51.Well done! Thanks. Tim Price for New Zealand. 35 years old. Married to

:49:52. > :49:56.Jenell this year. This is his most outstanding performance so far.

:49:57. > :50:05.Second place. outstanding performance so far.

:50:06. > :50:12.He's got one fence in hand over Sam Griffiths at the moment. He hasn't

:50:13. > :50:18.got that now. He's got less. Price 61.6 he started op. One down

:50:19. > :50:24.so far. One down. Could have had more. A

:50:25. > :50:34.little bit casual in here. He's got a bit on his brid le.

:50:35. > :50:35.little bit casual in here. not got the greatest record in this

:50:36. > :50:44.phase. Tim was a bit concerned... Another one away. So, he's going to

:50:45. > :50:56.move up into second place. Could it be an Australian 1-2?

:50:57. > :50:56.He seems to jump the oxers very well, this horse.

:50:57. > :51:07.height. The uprights, he is a little casual. He doesn't have a lot of

:51:08. > :51:12.respect for them. Such a good horse cross-country.

:51:13. > :51:21.Tim is giving him such a good ride. All he can do he is doing.

:51:22. > :51:26.And that's gone. Harry Meade has gone up another place and that's

:51:27. > :51:35.gone. Oh, dear! It drops him right down. Ninth place. 80.6.

:51:36. > :51:38.What other drama is in the locker here at Badminton before that

:51:39. > :51:44.What other drama is in the locker is decided for that Mitsubishi

:51:45. > :52:07.Motors Trophy? And here is the man - Paul Tapner.

:52:08. > :52:21.He's done it before. He knows what it's all about.

:52:22. > :52:26.Now with the Barkers, 56.4. So, he's got two fences in hand. He did have

:52:27. > :52:32.one in hand overnight. In fact, he's now got two but not

:52:33. > :52:57.three to stay in front about win the trophy for the second time.

:52:58. > :53:18.It will be a new starter, whoever wins this title. Can it be this man

:53:19. > :53:23.for Australia? What a brilliant round this partner

:53:24. > :53:28.partnership gave yesterday. He looked a little weary in the end. I

:53:29. > :53:33.was about to say he looked good in the collection ring, the little bit

:53:34. > :53:37.we saw of him. That is an early pole to have down. It is a long way

:53:38. > :53:38.around here. He can afford to have one more down

:53:39. > :53:48.and stay there. Good riding there.

:53:49. > :54:04.He was quick to make that decision. There'll be one man listening to the

:54:05. > :54:15.reaction of the crowd outside and that is Sam Griffiths and he's got

:54:16. > :54:17.it. Sam has got it. Is there anyone else that is going

:54:18. > :54:35.to slip ahead 68.4. Another would move up. Oliver

:54:36. > :54:42.Townend and Harry Meade. Oh!

:54:43. > :54:49.And that's gone! 72.4 and he drops down to fourth. Believes the last.

:54:50. > :54:55.Is he inside the time? Yes, just! So near, yet so far and this

:54:56. > :55:00.competition, for the Mitsubishi Motors Trophy, has been drama from

:55:01. > :55:07.start to finish. So, he drops down to fourth. It is

:55:08. > :55:14.Australia who wins though. It is Sam Griffiths. Oliver Townend, sex onned

:55:15. > :55:20.and Harry Meade third -- second and Harry Meade third.

:55:21. > :55:24.Here he is. 25th after dressage. Coming into this with plenty of good

:55:25. > :55:28.riders ahead of you and you have come out as the winner. Perhaps I

:55:29. > :55:34.was the last man standing, but my horse was a star. I knew I could

:55:35. > :55:39.claw my way up because she is such a good jumper. I am so proud of my

:55:40. > :55:45.horse. She tried so hard. You were not even watching of Paul Tapner's

:55:46. > :55:49.round. I am great friends with Paul. I am thrilled for how I have ended

:55:50. > :55:55.up. Is this the highlight of your career so far? Without doubt. As a

:55:56. > :55:58.little boy I always grew up watching highlights of Badminton back in

:55:59. > :56:05.Australia. It was a thrill to win it here and to win is like a dream come

:56:06. > :56:12.true. . You have a team around you. The grooms and everyone at home. My

:56:13. > :56:16.head girl, she has worked so hard. My horse has looked beautiful all

:56:17. > :56:20.week. I cannot give her enough credit. Was there a moment when you

:56:21. > :56:24.thought you might win? No. I never really entertained the idea,

:56:25. > :56:30.actually. So, it is just a thrill. Almost a bit of a shock. Listen, go

:56:31. > :56:35.and celebrate now. Many congratulations to Sam, who has won

:56:36. > :56:40.Badminton, 2014. Well, there are the Australians

:56:41. > :56:47.celebrating, as well they might. It is Sam Griffiths who wins with the

:56:48. > :57:15.11-year-old mare. This is a very, very good line-up

:57:16. > :57:22.for the 2014 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Trials. We have celebrated

:57:23. > :57:29.with Sam Griffiths. We must co-miss rate with Paul Tapner. That was a

:57:30. > :57:33.great, great shame. It is the sport. The horse has been amazing in the

:57:34. > :57:37.first two phases and did the best he can. Unfortunately he didn't get the

:57:38. > :57:42.same out of him today, which is a real shame for everybody.

:57:43. > :57:46.But, you know, that's just how it happens. At the beginning of the

:57:47. > :57:51.week and you had told me I would have been fourth, I would have been

:57:52. > :57:55.more than happy with that. You will be hugged deeply by your children!

:57:56. > :58:02.What an extraordinary competition we've had here. Coming up on BBC Two

:58:03. > :58:07.straight after us is the brilliant programme Inspire. This week we meet

:58:08. > :58:13.three people striving for excellence and leaving nothing to chance. We

:58:14. > :58:20.will catch up with a sprinter, a judo star and the squash world

:58:21. > :58:28.champion. Inspire The Olympic Journey, next on BBC Two. So it is

:58:29. > :58:34.on straight after us. On BBC One Final Score.

:58:35. > :58:38.I have to say, we knew this would be unpredictable. Three-day eventing

:58:39. > :58:43.always is. No-one expected that the winner would come from 25th place

:58:44. > :58:47.after dressage, fifth after cross-country and win the major

:58:48. > :58:51.trophy. Well done to Sam Griffiths. What a story for Harry Meade, who

:58:52. > :58:54.last August was told he would never ride again. He recovers and finishes

:58:55. > :59:00.third.
