:00:15. > :00:23.What a competition. My word! Such a partnership, these two. It is
:00:24. > :00:29.exceptional. What a fabulous combination. Pure class as a rider.
:00:30. > :00:42.# # That was easy. He's way over it. Welcome to one of the most iconic
:00:43. > :00:48.and picturesque sporting events anywhere in the world. This is
:00:49. > :00:56.Badminton House. It dooms back to the Doomsday Book and it has been
:00:57. > :01:03.the home to the Dukes of Beuford. Since 1949 it has been home to the
:01:04. > :01:07.Badminton Horse Trials. The course country course stretches over four
:01:08. > :01:13.miles and it is this course, this place, it is this title which has
:01:14. > :01:16.brought riders from Australia, France, Great Britain, from Ireland
:01:17. > :01:21.- from all over the globe, because they want to compete here, ride
:01:22. > :01:38.around here and win here, at Badminton.
:01:39. > :02:05.The hot title to win this weekend is the man who has dominated the sport,
:02:06. > :02:09.he's the European champion and stands on the verge of doing
:02:10. > :02:13.something which only one rider, Pippa Funnell, has ever achieved
:02:14. > :02:20.before because the Rolex Grand Slamming of events offers ?240,000
:02:21. > :02:30.prize to any rider who can win our Leigh, Ken tuckry and Badminton. He
:02:31. > :02:31.won the other two this year. He could become the first German ever
:02:32. > :02:48.to win Badminton. The winner of the Rolex 2016. To
:02:49. > :02:51.complete the Grand Slam is a big challenge. Just one person won it
:02:52. > :02:55.before. It is very difficult to have all three.
:02:56. > :03:02.I think my horse is one of the best horses in the world. For me he's a
:03:03. > :03:07.very good friend. Many years I have been with him - he was five years
:03:08. > :03:12.old. He's a very special horse, very powerful in the cross-country. He
:03:13. > :03:20.won nearly everything - European Championship 2011. Kentucky, 2010.
:03:21. > :03:31.The Olympic Games in London, 2012. So, he's a very special horse. And
:03:32. > :03:36.very excited for me was the win in Burleigh last year - it was a big
:03:37. > :03:42.competition. He's very pierful. He listens to the rider. He -- patient
:03:43. > :03:47.and he listens to the rider. It makes me happy. The Grand Slam is
:03:48. > :03:51.always in my head because I won the two competitions before. I would
:03:52. > :03:56.like to give him not too much pressure. I would like to ride him
:03:57. > :04:00.as a normal competition. For me, in my head, we are normal and relaxed
:04:01. > :04:06.and the horse will feel the same. When you sit on the horse and you,
:04:07. > :04:11.as a rider, you know it from so many years and many competitions, then
:04:12. > :04:17.you have is peerns and then you have to trust in each other. --
:04:18. > :04:21.experience and then you have to trust in each other. Badminton is
:04:22. > :04:28.one of the biggest competitions in the world. Every rider will win one
:04:29. > :04:38.time in their life. The one man who might have stopped him is pit pit
:04:39. > :04:45.pit. William Pitt. He's thankful to be here at all. It is William Fox
:04:46. > :04:55.Pitt's title for 2015. It started brilliantly. I won
:04:56. > :05:01.Badminton and then at the end of the year I unexpected had a crunching
:05:02. > :05:06.fall at the World Championships for horses in France. I was knocked out.
:05:07. > :05:10.I was in an induced coma for ten days. It is one of those freak
:05:11. > :05:15.things. Do you remember anything at all about the fall and the recovery
:05:16. > :05:18.in hospital in France? My memory has been really weird. I remember
:05:19. > :05:23.certain things on certain days and not other days. Like, in France
:05:24. > :05:28.where the accident happened, I don't remember even having my horse there.
:05:29. > :05:32.The horse that fell was, as far as I remember, he wasn't even there.
:05:33. > :05:36.Whereas I remember riding my other horse cross-country that morning. I
:05:37. > :05:40.remember doing dressage and cross-country, but the other horse,
:05:41. > :05:44.my brain has moved away. When you were in hospital recovering,
:05:45. > :05:48.obviously there was a long period of uncertainty and you, I am thinking
:05:49. > :05:54.are pretty unaware of that, so your wife, Alice is taking the brunt of
:05:55. > :05:58.the worrying? Absolutely. I was completely oblivious. I had the
:05:59. > :06:02.nicest accident and rehab time, in a nice coma and coming around and
:06:03. > :06:07.relaxed. It was the poor people that were there - poor Alice. That first
:06:08. > :06:12.sort of 24 hours nobody would say anything. You know when nobody says
:06:13. > :06:20.anything that it has to be bad. I think my first view of him in
:06:21. > :06:24.hospital was what you dread. All the specialists there said, do you know
:06:25. > :06:27.what, we just don't know because head injuries are so individual. We
:06:28. > :06:33.don't which bits are damaged and what will come back. And then the
:06:34. > :06:38.first time he squeezed my hand, you know, it's just so bizarre that
:06:39. > :06:43.small things like that are like, it will for ever stay with me. How much
:06:44. > :06:48.was the drive to ride again? To compete again - the fact the
:06:49. > :06:52.Olympics are this summer? When I got out of rehab, I and I got home, I
:06:53. > :06:57.thought, right I will ride by Christmas. It got me back in the
:06:58. > :07:02.saddle. I can still ride. Because my balance was dodgy and my sight had
:07:03. > :07:06.gone. It gave me pleasure to be on a horse, not to be jumping or
:07:07. > :07:11.schooling, but to go for a nice hack. I know I am not quite me. I
:07:12. > :07:15.know I am a little bit slow. I am a little bit unreactive. My sight has
:07:16. > :07:20.now come back. My sight was a very good reminder, because I had double
:07:21. > :07:23.and blurred vision for five months. I weirdly lost all sense of
:07:24. > :07:29.adrenaline. My first few events were like I was riding at home. Normally
:07:30. > :07:33.you go to events and get excited and look forward to that cross-country
:07:34. > :07:37.course and going for it. It was like watching somebody else do it. Now I
:07:38. > :07:41.am getting a little bit more butterflies are going, a bit of
:07:42. > :07:47.pressure on. I think I am getting sharper all the time now. But you
:07:48. > :07:51.have to be realistic, I imagine the withdrawal from Badminton is a hint
:07:52. > :07:57.of realism? That was a real sadness. I knew it would be soon, but it was
:07:58. > :08:02.not meant to be. We had a fall at Western Park. People would have
:08:03. > :08:06.said, he really has had a fall on the head. So, enough was enough. I
:08:07. > :08:11.held my hands up and I thought, you know what, last year was great, I am
:08:12. > :08:16.very lucky to be riding Chilli Morning. He would not do it if he
:08:17. > :08:21.didn't believe he could as well as he's done it. He's focussed and now
:08:22. > :08:27.when he's riding as well as he always does, it is like the magic is
:08:28. > :08:32.back. Just great to see William looking and sounding in such good
:08:33. > :08:36.form. He will ride at Chatsworth next weekend, a first in a new
:08:37. > :08:41.series. He will have to wait until July to know whether the British
:08:42. > :08:51.selectors have given him the green light for Rio. Plenty of people here
:08:52. > :08:56.hope to catch their eye. High Kingdom won silver in London 2012
:08:57. > :09:06.with Zara Phillips. The aim is to get to Rio this summer. Trying to
:09:07. > :09:12.get qualified. It is great to be back at Badminton.lily matly,
:09:13. > :09:17.getting a result here is -- ultimately getting a result here, if
:09:18. > :09:25.I do it will work towards qualification. How is he? He's in
:09:26. > :09:30.good form, actually. Had a quiet year last year, so hopefully that
:09:31. > :09:36.has saved his legs a bit. He's in great form. Looking forward to
:09:37. > :09:40.having him around a proper track. He's a proper four-star horse,
:09:41. > :09:46.anyway. How are you? Fit and ready for the challenge. It is nice to be
:09:47. > :09:50.back at the top events. That is what we aim to be there for. You have
:09:51. > :09:54.lots of examples of top-class riders around you who have had children and
:09:55. > :09:59.come back and been better. Have you felt any different in your approach,
:10:00. > :10:06.in the way you prepare, in the way of your riding since you've had a
:10:07. > :10:10.baby? I think you... A lot is getting your confidence back and
:10:11. > :10:15.your body into the shape that it was in before, which, you know, it does
:10:16. > :10:19.take a lot out of you. If there was, if you had a chance to achieve
:10:20. > :10:24.anything in your career, how high does winning Badminton come on the
:10:25. > :10:29.list of dreams? I think probably in our family, following my father's
:10:30. > :10:36.footsteps, to having an engraving on the trophy would be very high on my
:10:37. > :10:41.and probably family as well, on their list. And the big thing with
:10:42. > :10:45.him is you know and you trust him. You know each other. We know each
:10:46. > :10:49.other. We have been in partnership for a long time now. I have had him
:10:50. > :10:55.since he was a five-year-old. He is experienced. He's great fun. He's
:10:56. > :10:59.such great fun to ride. He's brave and he loves his job. All these
:11:00. > :11:05.things help you try and get the best out of each other. And have good
:11:06. > :11:09.results and hopefully be there right to the end.
:11:10. > :11:12.Zara is one of 77 competitors setting out, hoping to win the
:11:13. > :11:17.Mitsubishi Motors trophy. Over the last ten years we've had ten
:11:18. > :11:22.different winners. Here are some of the major contenders for 2016.
:11:23. > :11:29.Badminton means everything. It is an event that I have watched since I
:11:30. > :11:33.was a child. I have dreamt of coming tond a it's probably the most
:11:34. > :11:36.important -- coming to and it is probably the most important event in
:11:37. > :11:42.the world. I have been lucky to be first, second, third. It has been a
:11:43. > :11:47.really good positive event for me from the beginning of my career.
:11:48. > :11:52.Badminton is a very special place. I have watched all the videos since I
:11:53. > :11:56.was a boy so I know the place fairly well. Every time you come here you
:11:57. > :12:00.tell yourself not to be too excited. It is a nerve-racking place. I would
:12:01. > :12:07.love to do well at Badminton, of course. The intensity of this
:12:08. > :12:11.competition, the build-up, the other competitors, standard, the course,
:12:12. > :12:15.the atmosphere and the fans - it really is the best event in the
:12:16. > :12:20.world. I think most riders looking to go to the Olympics, Badminton is
:12:21. > :12:25.important to prove yourself and your horse to get selected. What better
:12:26. > :12:29.place to do it? If you can get on the podium here, I would think you
:12:30. > :12:34.are straight on the team. It is just fantastic to be here at
:12:35. > :12:38.Badminton. It is a most magical event. The crowd and spectators are
:12:39. > :12:46.so passionate and behind every horse and rider. We come here with a
:12:47. > :12:52.preparation that has gone to plan Coco or One Too Many is in great
:12:53. > :12:55.form and we've left no stone left unturned. It is a strong
:12:56. > :13:01.competition. It is an Olympic year. All we can do is our absolute best
:13:02. > :13:06.and that is what we will be giving 100% our very best. The first part
:13:07. > :13:10.of the test is dressage - a series of set moves which test the
:13:11. > :13:18.suppleness, the balance and agility of a horse. Think of it as ballet on
:13:19. > :13:25.four legs a and the Germansing sell at it. This was one of only three
:13:26. > :13:30.scores in the 30s and that was excellent. It was beautiful. My
:13:31. > :13:34.horse was so lovely and he was so much with me. I was able from the
:13:35. > :13:40.moment to going into the arena to going out that I completely enjoyed
:13:41. > :13:45.it from the beginning to the end. At 20 Emily King is the youngest
:13:46. > :13:51.rider here. This feels like home. She has been coming since a baby,
:13:52. > :13:57.with her mother the two-time champion Mary King. She has been
:13:58. > :14:02.working on her dressage and she got a score of 36.8. Absolutely over the
:14:03. > :14:10.moon. My horse was incredible. He is, we all knew he was capable of
:14:11. > :14:15.doing a good test. Luckily so far we have grown to the occasion at the
:14:16. > :14:19.bigger events. Leading to the way to no-one's surprise is Michael Jung
:14:20. > :14:24.who once again showed not just accuracy and fluency, but an
:14:25. > :14:28.incredible harmony between him and his horse, Sam, who seems to
:14:29. > :14:32.understand what is required, and puts on a show without being too
:14:33. > :14:37.flashy, does everything that is asked and their score of 34.4 was
:14:38. > :14:42.better than anyone else. I am happy about my horse. Sam did a very good
:14:43. > :14:46.job. Now I am looking forward to the cross-country. My horse is in very
:14:47. > :14:49.good form. He feels very happy at this place. I think that we are
:14:50. > :14:56.lucky enough for tomorrow. Let's look at the top 12. Michael
:14:57. > :15:00.Jung setting the pace ahead of Emily King. A good chance for Francis
:15:01. > :15:15.Whittington on Hasty Imp. This will not be a dressage
:15:16. > :15:19.competition, this cross-country course is long and really tough. The
:15:20. > :15:24.first rider on the horse is Oliver Townend. They finished second
:15:25. > :15:30.together two years ago and they have come here to the Horse Quest Quarry.
:15:31. > :15:34.Such a canny horse. He's 17 now. He is very clever. You see the
:15:35. > :15:38.undulations on the course, that can be tiring as well. Away he goes, to
:15:39. > :15:42.huge applause from this massive crowd. Now let's pick up commentary
:15:43. > :18:22.on the cross-country. These three strides here looking
:18:23. > :18:26.relatively friendly. The riders in the start box will get a lot of
:18:27. > :18:35.confidence from the way these fences have been riding so far.
:18:36. > :18:46.This is the influential part of the course. So is Sarah Bullimore coming
:18:47. > :18:51.to the quarry. There is a big hole there at the bottom of the dip. No
:18:52. > :18:56.problem for Sarah. A tight turn back. Very vertical w a big drop and
:18:57. > :19:09.then quickly back up the hill. Nice and close. A good turn away.
:19:10. > :19:17.Here we are at 17, 18 and 19 - the New Pond. We have come up a steep
:19:18. > :19:22.hill before we get to the rails of the vertical. Not a fence we
:19:23. > :19:27.particularly like as riders, but the Birch rails are a nice, light fence
:19:28. > :19:33.which the horses can see clearly, followed by a steep drop down into
:19:34. > :19:37.the water. Then the distance to the all important parallel at 14 before
:19:38. > :19:41.we make the turn to the big corner. Fence 18 - the parallel in the
:19:42. > :19:47.middle of the water jump, something we have not seen a lot of as riders.
:19:48. > :19:53.It is a test of scope. Jumping out of water is difficult for horses
:19:54. > :19:58.auven you see a brush in the water which is smaller. This is testing
:19:59. > :20:02.their scope and power. I am late in the draw. I think there
:20:03. > :20:07.is a four and a five-stride to this oxer. We will not want to get it
:20:08. > :20:11.wrong because we don't want to get stuck on the back rail. In the
:20:12. > :20:18.unfortunate event of that happening the course designer has been modern
:20:19. > :20:23.- so you will get away unscathed, although you will occur penalties.
:20:24. > :20:32.Fence 19 the big right angled corner. It has been kind in
:20:33. > :20:37.numbering. Riders will have to be accurate. If they drift off their
:20:38. > :20:42.line, it becomes unjumpable. You will see so many riders pop it by
:20:43. > :20:55.the flag and make light work of it. It is a good fence, but a very
:20:56. > :21:02.testing fence. COMMENTATOR: very intensive part of the course. It
:21:03. > :21:07.will set you up for an optimum time. He doesn't get a great shot, but
:21:08. > :21:20.jumps it. He is seven seconds up. That is a good start.
:21:21. > :21:28.Here we have the vicarage Visa. I have jumped it about 30 times. Some
:21:29. > :21:32.fences combine everything. The boldness, because of the width and
:21:33. > :21:36.the height of the fence. But you need to be exactly on the right line
:21:37. > :21:42.for the horses to be able to do it easily. Other fences you have bold
:21:43. > :21:46.fences and different fences, accurate ones, but this one has it
:21:47. > :21:52.all. Important to get on your exact line and make sure the horse, your
:21:53. > :21:57.horse is going to notice the ditch. It is more of a rider frightener.
:21:58. > :22:01.You have got to be precise so the horse doesn't pay the price of you
:22:02. > :22:06.being slightly offline. Some horses will come and start to get a bit
:22:07. > :22:12.wary about the ditch and jump off to the right and miss then and have a
:22:13. > :22:18.20 penalties run out. I would rather than happen than just less and land
:22:19. > :22:34.in the muddy ditch. But touch wood I haven't got muddy. Hopefully that
:22:35. > :22:46.will continue for me! Olly Townend at the Vicarage Vee. Izzy Taylor
:22:47. > :22:51.with Mattila coming to the pond. These fairly upright houses. The
:22:52. > :22:58.riders consider this an easier fence this year. We are looking at the old
:22:59. > :23:03.Irish bank and the red route the long route. Severing seconds more on
:23:04. > :23:08.the blue route. This man at the moment is going all the short
:23:09. > :23:15.routes. Armada looking strong and positive again and away from the
:23:16. > :23:22.Outlander Bank. Heading up now to the hollow. A test of accuracy.
:23:23. > :23:37.4.20. He is in a good place at the moment. Getting a great rhythm.
:23:38. > :23:43.Great shot. Straight as a dye. At this stage of the course, the horses
:23:44. > :23:52.are starting to feel tired. We need to have the horses awake. We have
:23:53. > :23:57.jumped the cars and we can't afford to cut the corner and head out into
:23:58. > :24:02.the lake off to the right, because the water gets very deep. I have
:24:03. > :24:07.just about had a swim there! We need to make sure our turn is finished
:24:08. > :24:12.and that we are actually heading in the direction that we want. We need
:24:13. > :24:16.to have the horses with the hocks under them, prepared and because it
:24:17. > :24:20.is a brush fence this year I think we can attack it a bit and make sure
:24:21. > :24:27.we get the horses in. There is a bit of a drop on the landing side. We
:24:28. > :24:33.need to be sitting up, balanced so the horses are balanced and ready to
:24:34. > :24:39.go for the way out. This is where I would hopefully be landing. I'm six
:24:40. > :24:44.foot three, it is a proper six foot drop. You need to be sitting up when
:24:45. > :24:49.you land here. Through the lake here and it is important to keep the
:24:50. > :24:53.horse balanced and keep them moving forward. This brush fence on the way
:24:54. > :24:58.out here which I think this year helps a bit. Sometimes with a low
:24:59. > :25:03.bank jumping out of water, horses can misread it. This is a proper
:25:04. > :25:12.fence. They have to jump it well and then two strides to the narrow
:25:13. > :25:17.bullfinch. The element here narrow, a little bit wide. The horses
:25:18. > :25:23.normally coming out of the lake, they want to get out and they will
:25:24. > :25:27.jump this and we can gallop on to finish the course. In the history of
:25:28. > :25:32.this competition the lake comes as late as it has ever been. Will it
:25:33. > :25:41.have an influence? Perhaps looks softer. But again a good time. That
:25:42. > :25:47.green time. Here is the big drop. Beautifully controlled. Lovely
:25:48. > :25:56.rhythm through the lake and again just asked the horse to extend. This
:25:57. > :26:04.is a wonderful start for this great cross country course. Just really
:26:05. > :26:13.needed to be attacking more. But they can go the alternative. She has
:26:14. > :26:18.got to have her wits about her. Matilda is saying I have had enough.
:26:19. > :26:23.Izzy puts her hand up and probably sensible. This great mare said, this
:26:24. > :26:32.is one too many, mum. Thank you very much. Oliver Townend within half a
:26:33. > :26:36.mile of home. These are big hedges on the side of a hill. Not always
:26:37. > :26:42.easy to keep the horse together. Particularly when they maybe getting
:26:43. > :26:46.weary. We are looking for that time of 11.58. There is many who don't
:26:47. > :26:56.think there will be too many clear inside the time. Sarah Buliimore,
:26:57. > :27:02.she stands off a bit. Elimination for Sarah. There is a chicane coming
:27:03. > :27:07.into that fence and the horses don't see it that early. She comes around
:27:08. > :27:13.the corner and there is no stride there and the horse picks almost one
:27:14. > :27:24.too quickly. You notice pins on the back of the oxer broke. So sadly the
:27:25. > :27:34.end of their day. Here is Armada flying for home. The Has given this
:27:35. > :27:43.competition a great start. He will be inside. That is a sensational
:27:44. > :27:56.opening. This man has knocked on the selector's doors. 46.02. You made
:27:57. > :28:02.that look easy. How did it ride? It is tougher than it looks. Armada is
:28:03. > :28:06.a machine cross country, is perhaps not what he used to be two or three
:28:07. > :28:11.years ago. He is definitely getting older. So I had to work a bit. But
:28:12. > :28:26.he wants to do it. He is just amazing. Of the fences you think
:28:27. > :28:32.will cause the most trouble. Th Vicarage V EE, it is hard work.
:28:33. > :28:58.There we have for France Jean Teulere. Gwendolen
:28:59. > :29:04.Fer has brought a big consin gent. -- contingent. She has been here
:29:05. > :29:11.before and was not successful. But she is looking a lot brighter
:29:12. > :29:22.prospect now. A sharp right to the big wall. Safe and sound. One of the
:29:23. > :29:26.most successful riders in the world isn't competing, but it is a good
:29:27. > :29:30.thing to see him looking fit and well, Andrew Nicholson, the last
:29:31. > :29:35.people heard you were seriously injured a of a fall last August.
:29:36. > :29:41.What happened and how are you? I hurt my neck in a fall. I had a very
:29:42. > :29:46.good surgeon, who fixed me up and now I'm back in action. I wasn't
:29:47. > :29:50.quite ready to ride. I didn't feel I could be competitive enough to be up
:29:51. > :29:56.in the leaders. I thought it was best to watch on foot. When you say
:29:57. > :30:00.you hurt you neck, what did you actually do? I don't sort of
:30:01. > :30:06.understand all of the... Proper terms of it all. Apart from I
:30:07. > :30:12.smashed one of the vertebras in my neck, it shattered and they have
:30:13. > :30:21.taken it out and replaced it with some metalwork and bolted a few bits
:30:22. > :30:28.together and here we are. Well Jean has been part of French team since
:30:29. > :30:29.the 80s and it shows. A brilliant judge and he is one of the quickest
:30:30. > :30:43.so far. The scores so close after the
:30:44. > :30:49.dressage. At the Mirage Popped. No problems for Gwendolen Fer.
:30:50. > :30:53.Jean not hanging around here. A beautiful jump. Then this tight
:30:54. > :30:57.turn. The crowds are right up against the rail, but his horse is
:30:58. > :31:06.not paying any attention to them. He's totally focussed. A great jump
:31:07. > :31:12.in. A little bit of re-balance. Makes it look like child's play.
:31:13. > :31:21.Sam Griffiths on this very horse - he won here before - he's been in
:31:22. > :31:27.good form in the warm-up. He's been away in the early stages of this
:31:28. > :31:36.course. Gwendolen Fer at the Shoogun Hollow.
:31:37. > :31:41.She gets underknead that. Sits upright and keeps her leg on and
:31:42. > :31:46.forces the horse through. Jean into the main arena. He's had a great
:31:47. > :31:53.ride around here. He is flying. Look at the time. Is he going to make it?
:31:54. > :31:57.It will be tight. He has an in-built clock in this head of his. Let's
:31:58. > :32:04.make it... Nearly there. One second over. But there is a big smile on
:32:05. > :32:10.the Frenchman's face. So there should be - excellent!
:32:11. > :32:16.Sam Griffiths at the Mound. Australia looking to have a good
:32:17. > :32:23.squad for Rio. Over the big log. Has he... Oh, no, he's just shot past
:32:24. > :32:27.that right flag and when you look at that route the horse doesn't see the
:32:28. > :32:33.question. You have to have a bending line. It just offers that option to
:32:34. > :32:42.duck by. So, that is one of the big guns with 20 penalties on his card.
:32:43. > :32:52.Quite a surprise. And Gwendoline, she gets there. More organised
:32:53. > :33:02.there. She comes towards the end of the course. It is the Olympic and
:33:03. > :33:07.European champion, Jung. They have achieved that Olympic title. He's
:33:08. > :33:12.got a great team of horses. The crucial part here, he's won two
:33:13. > :33:18.consecutive legs of the Rolex Grand Slam. If he happened to win here
:33:19. > :33:23.then he could be in line for $350,000 as a Grand Slam prize of
:33:24. > :33:28.eventing. The man is up for it, believe me. He had a great win in
:33:29. > :33:33.Kentucky last week and he set off in a very positive mood. Two lovely big
:33:34. > :33:37.hedges to get the horses away. Opening up. They are such stylish
:33:38. > :33:46.and they make it look so easy. And look at this time - the French
:33:47. > :33:52.will be singing and happy. They will be delighted with. This two of their
:33:53. > :33:56.great riders and Gwendolen Fer punching the air inside the time.
:33:57. > :34:01.This is looking positive for the French for Rio.
:34:02. > :34:09.Well, what is really showing up in this course is positive riding. One
:34:10. > :34:14.rider with conviction, you will get that from 33-year-old Michael Jung.
:34:15. > :34:19.He won his Olympic title on his 30th birthday, of course, in 2012. Just
:34:20. > :34:25.started, Jesse Campbell from New Zealand. A very talented young rider
:34:26. > :34:36.and probably as tall as Mark Todd with his long legs.
:34:37. > :34:43.And really... Beautifully ridden. So balanced, so controlled.
:34:44. > :34:56.Michael Jung at the Mound, with his horse. This has caused a problem or
:34:57. > :35:00.two. Gets underneath the log. A super line out. This man is looking
:35:01. > :35:07.110%. This one is not looking so bad
:35:08. > :35:16.either. Yes, and really punches with strides, looking positive, good and
:35:17. > :35:20.looking classy. Michael Jung with his horse at the
:35:21. > :35:31.New Pond. You can see his time at the moment.
:35:32. > :35:39.Target time 5: 33. This, so intense sieve this section.
:35:40. > :35:45.Is-the-is where it can be won or -- this is where it can be won or lost.
:35:46. > :35:49.If you go behind the clock on this intense section, we will get a
:35:50. > :35:55.chance to see how he's doing it. He makes his way over the Rolex Grand
:35:56. > :36:01.Slam hedge. Now watch the time here. It is from the Mound to the Vicarage
:36:02. > :36:12.skaf V. There it is - top right. A beautiful jump and he's right on the
:36:13. > :36:18.target. He is the fastest so far. And Kaapachino is very focussed.
:36:19. > :36:25.Now Michael Jung. Sam is still full of running.
:36:26. > :36:30.It is where the dressage counts - keep the horse straight. No problem
:36:31. > :36:35.at all for this man. My word, he is of course brilliant at dressage,
:36:36. > :36:40.brilliant at showjumping and very good at cross-country. He's setting
:36:41. > :36:46.new standards. Here is another one we want to be seeing, Andreas
:36:47. > :36:54.Ostholt, for Germany. Very close to the leading points here. And a lot
:36:55. > :36:58.of pressure on Andreas. Just overly steadied there. The horse shows all
:36:59. > :37:03.his strength and power. He pops over that wall and that is a big wall at
:37:04. > :37:08.the top of that ramp. The Germans at the moment of course hold all three
:37:09. > :37:17.major titles - the worlds, the Olympics and the Europeans. This, an
:37:18. > :37:28.important test, for them. He set this chance up after winning
:37:29. > :37:34.Burleigh. He really is berm determined to set the pace. Remember
:37:35. > :37:42.he's got to win here Sunday night. Looking balanced at the Mirage Pond.
:37:43. > :37:53.A little bit of a rattle on the way out. Nothing wrong with that. At the
:37:54. > :37:58.escalator... The rhythm remains the same. Just really shortens the
:37:59. > :38:04.stride to get the accuracy. He's so good at that. We are getting a
:38:05. > :38:12.wonderful lesson how to ride cross-country from him. Andreas
:38:13. > :38:19.Ostholt into the water and over the oxer. Holds a good line. Doesn't get
:38:20. > :38:24.a great jump. Pretty close to that time. He needs to quicken up a
:38:25. > :38:32.little bit later on. Now, virtually inside of home. Over
:38:33. > :38:36.the Rolex Crossing. Those two big logs, all done by chain saw -
:38:37. > :38:40.brilliant work. He's got under 30 seconds to get home, but he's
:38:41. > :38:43.flying. This will be another inside. He will stay on his
:38:44. > :38:47.overnightdressage, which means he will be the leader of the
:38:48. > :38:52.cross-country. That is sitting comfortably in his target. Turns for
:38:53. > :38:58.home, takes a pull, gets the shot... Oh, that's been a real classic
:38:59. > :39:05.class. There he is. Stops the clock. Seven seconds inside. 34. : 4.
:39:06. > :39:14.It is beautiful to watch because you interfere so little. You ride him on
:39:15. > :39:19.a long reign. He comes back when you need him to. We are such a good
:39:20. > :39:26.partnership. I trust him and he trusts me. He knows that he can
:39:27. > :39:28.trust me in everything that I do. Everything, when I prepare the
:39:29. > :39:34.fence, he knows which fence is coming. He jumps very careful. He
:39:35. > :39:39.jumps forward. He does everything that I say to him. And that gives me
:39:40. > :39:46.such a good feeling. So, that is unbelievable. Everything feels so
:39:47. > :39:49.easy. It is a tough course. But, through the energy of him, I didn't
:39:50. > :39:54.have a feeling that I was galloping fast. It feels - everything is so
:39:55. > :40:05.easy with him. It is a wonderful feeling.
:40:06. > :40:10.So, coming to the Vicarage is Vee. Putting together a very good team at
:40:11. > :40:17.the moment. He's taken the alternative. Not very confidently.
:40:18. > :40:22.But he got over it. You can ask as well as going over that red flag,
:40:23. > :40:27.you see the pins, they are very much for the safety of the horse and the
:40:28. > :40:31.rider. You can see from this replay, the balance is good, the horse has
:40:32. > :40:35.his eye on the fence. He's drifting through that right soldier and does
:40:36. > :40:40.-- shoulder and doesn't get over the fence. His shoulders and front legs
:40:41. > :40:47.go around the flag and therefore encourage 20 penalties.
:40:48. > :40:57.And so at the Lake for Jesse Campbell. Got to put that little
:40:58. > :41:02.hiccup behind him. He is such a cool rider, stylish and positive. The
:41:03. > :41:09.horse is just not playing the game. He left his front leg there. He
:41:10. > :41:18.still pushes and gets that two strides.
:41:19. > :41:24.Andreas Ostholt at the Outlander bank again.
:41:25. > :41:33.Goes right. Again for New Zealand Clarke
:41:34. > :41:37.Johnstone. At the Mound. An influential fence already on the
:41:38. > :41:41.course. The horse keeps his eye on. That it is too easy to turn too
:41:42. > :41:53.quick to that final element. He's slow on the clock. He's some 30
:41:54. > :41:59.seconds behind. That one refusal will be disapointeding. He's a very
:42:00. > :42:05.talented young man, this. He ends on 66.
:42:06. > :42:09.In fact, 67.3. Goes seventh at this stage. A beautiful round of jumping
:42:10. > :42:13.from Michael Jung means he's out in front.
:42:14. > :42:20.Oliver Townend has moved from 24th after dressage to be second ahead of
:42:21. > :42:29.three French riders, including 62-year-old Jean Teulere.
:42:30. > :42:36.Clarke Johnstone been in New Zealand since 2014. That is where he's
:42:37. > :42:41.campaigned for this Olympic event. He's looking good. And Andreas
:42:42. > :42:47.Ostholt taking a pull there. Getting organised for this second last
:42:48. > :42:52.fence. Makes nothing of it - leans forward, flying, trying to make up
:42:53. > :42:56.that time. He's only got eight seconds to get into the main arena
:42:57. > :43:00.and over the final fence. He's pushing on and the horse is
:43:01. > :43:06.galloping well. There he is, on the time already. How many time faults?
:43:07. > :43:10.Where will he end up? The main thing is he jumps the last fence well.
:43:11. > :43:16.He's a very happy man. Into second position.
:43:17. > :43:22.A chance to catch up with Andreas Ostholt. Well done. A few time
:43:23. > :43:28.faults, but you are clear and into second place. Yes, thanks a lot. I
:43:29. > :43:34.am very pleased. Generally speaking, how did it ride? I had a really
:43:35. > :43:41.great feeling. For sure, at the Vicarage I was really lucky. It
:43:42. > :43:52.shows me, did a little bit of acrobatics. Luckily I managed it.
:43:53. > :43:56.So, it is the Kiwi, Clarke Johnstone, with Balmoral Sensation.
:43:57. > :44:00.A big winner in New Zealand. Been to Adelaide. He's had good experience,
:44:01. > :44:04.but this is a different game here and he's certainly answering the
:44:05. > :44:06.questions through that New Pond. He's looking good on the clock as
:44:07. > :44:22.well. Two seconds up at this stage. And so Jonathan Paget, at the
:44:23. > :44:29.Huntsman's Close. That position of his - looking forward.
:44:30. > :44:39.Balmoral Acceptation, a little stumble. He is kept steady as he
:44:40. > :44:45.comes to the Shogun Hollow. This man is certainly knocking on the door
:44:46. > :44:49.for the Rio Olympics. A lovely line. Absolutely a lovely
:44:50. > :44:53.line. A big check on the catch.
:44:54. > :45:06.-- on the watch. He is always with the horse. The
:45:07. > :45:14.horse responding there beautifully. Michael Owen now out on course. With
:45:15. > :45:19.Bradeley Law. And he just goes too far left and clips the ditch, which
:45:20. > :45:26.gives Michael no hope. There is such a fine margin that you can take to
:45:27. > :45:31.make it safe there. And sadly Michael and Bradeley Law says, bye,
:45:32. > :45:38.I'm off home. He is eliminated any way. But this horse is definitely
:45:39. > :45:43.looking for home! A disappointed Michael Owen. He has had some good
:45:44. > :45:54.performances, but this I'm afraid sees him out. Quite a clever fence
:45:55. > :46:05.this. Could waste a lot of time. But the tight line shows how quick and
:46:06. > :46:15.easy that fence can be. Clifton Lush, an ex-race horse. A new price
:46:16. > :46:25.of ?1,000 for the best ex-race horse. Time looks good. So one Kiwi
:46:26. > :46:29.out, but another one coming to the finishing line. Clark Johnstone is
:46:30. > :46:35.only just over. A very good performance. Never easy to bring
:46:36. > :46:38.horses from the southern to the northern hemisphere and get them to
:46:39. > :46:49.compete well. A great round to go into third. A lovely clear round.
:46:50. > :46:53.What was it like? Thank you, I'm excited to have gone clear. It was
:46:54. > :46:59.hard work. It was a big track and took a lot of jumping. But I'm
:47:00. > :47:03.thrilled to have come home clear. There is a long New Zealand
:47:04. > :47:08.presence? Yes we are all trying to get selection for Rio. What do you
:47:09. > :47:14.think of your chances? Jumping a clear round wouldn't have done them
:47:15. > :47:18.any harm. Hopefully a nice dressage test on Thursday and jump a clear
:47:19. > :47:22.round, a difficult trek here, so we put in a good clear round tomorrow
:47:23. > :47:34.and hopefully it should be good. Well done. Thank you. So we have for
:47:35. > :47:40.Britain Francis Whittington and Hasty Imp. A lovely jump there. It
:47:41. > :47:48.is a clever fence and it is riding really well. I wasn't a fan of the
:47:49. > :47:54.seeing the twisty, Turney approach, but the horses are coping well. It
:47:55. > :48:00.is as quick as you can make the tight lines that will set you up for
:48:01. > :48:05.the rest of the course. Clifton Lush 45.2 in the dressage. Was in 19th
:48:06. > :48:14.place. Disa pointing for what he can do. But they're all so close. Oh,
:48:15. > :48:24.picks up an early -- up a little early. But sits tight. Look at the
:48:25. > :48:30.crowds - absolutely jam-packed. Enjoying great weather. The ground
:48:31. > :48:36.trying out. It is -- drying out. It is riding fast. He straightens him
:48:37. > :48:45.up and flies away towards the last sector. The mound for Hasty Imp. He
:48:46. > :48:51.has had so many good horses over the years. This is a very nice horse. He
:48:52. > :49:02.has got to stay focussed. The horse, gives the horse time to look at that
:49:03. > :49:14.final element. A little nod of his body. This partnership now beginning
:49:15. > :49:23.to run for home. Mark Todd here and Leonida. Looking as good and as
:49:24. > :49:28.young as ever. Now Francis Whittington, Hasty Imp at the New
:49:29. > :49:33.Pond. This fence had jumped quite beautifully. He doesn't get the shot
:49:34. > :49:39.he would like. Keeps riding forward and gets the shot to the very big
:49:40. > :49:43.corner. Down on the clock, but only fractions. He can pick that up.
:49:44. > :49:56.Francis going as well as we have seen him in recent years. Here is
:49:57. > :50:00.Jock coming in. He wants the horse to stay confident for this last
:50:01. > :50:06.fence. This looks like another one inside the time. Earlier we thought
:50:07. > :50:17.it would be sticky, but the horses are enjoying it and Jon is thrilled
:50:18. > :50:20.with that. You finished third on this horse last time, you're
:50:21. > :50:26.rocketing up the leaderboard. That was great. Yes I needed to head
:50:27. > :50:30.north after Thursday. It wasn't the best test and I let him down in a
:50:31. > :50:39.couple of movements. So I owed him a good ride. He responded well. Sir
:50:40. > :50:45.Mark here at the sixth, one of the friendlier fences. But it is a
:50:46. > :50:53.massive, big, square fence. Now to the pond. A good canter. And what
:50:54. > :51:01.you want to watch there is the way that Mark Todd keeps his horses so
:51:02. > :51:06.well in balance. Francis Whittington, Hasty Imp, at the
:51:07. > :51:16.hollow. He too had a wiggle, but he does well to keep straight. The
:51:17. > :51:22.horse still looking good. Now we see Astier Nicholas. Another of the
:51:23. > :51:30.French who are up for this. Always very quick on this horse. Francis
:51:31. > :51:35.coming to the lake. Just a bit long. He felt the horse didn't respond
:51:36. > :51:40.there and he gave him a tap with the whip, saying come on, boy, we have
:51:41. > :51:45.got a few more fences to go. It makes him think a bit more forward.
:51:46. > :51:50.He is taking Francis into the jumps, rather than being a little
:51:51. > :52:03.reluctant. He responds well there. And now coming to the final fence it
:52:04. > :52:07.is Ben Hobday. This man a year ago had blood leukaemia, but he is
:52:08. > :52:15.strong and finished in great style. The fans love that. Well done! This
:52:16. > :52:19.is one of the most remarkable stories, Ben Hobday jumped around
:52:20. > :52:25.that cross country course, there was a massive cheer in the riders' tent.
:52:26. > :52:31.Why is it a miracle that you're here? I'm fortunate to be here. Last
:52:32. > :52:40.year looked a bit uncertain at times. I got diagnosed with cancer
:52:41. > :52:44.last year and... My and dad and mum and girlfriend have been brilliant
:52:45. > :52:50.and it has been a real it is a tock get here. I'm so grateful to
:52:51. > :52:59.everyone at the NHS. They have helped me. And the owner, she,
:53:00. > :53:03.Sally, she made it possible. Sally it is amazing and the horse he has
:53:04. > :53:06.ridden around has helped, must have helped in the recovery. Well
:53:07. > :53:13.exactly. I think Ben was in his hospital bed and he was saying to
:53:14. > :53:16.us, want to do badminton again. We were thinking, what? We never
:53:17. > :53:19.thought, we never thought in a million years we would be here. Let
:53:20. > :53:24.alone for him to go around like that. We are all just so proud of
:53:25. > :53:27.him. Because he has had some very dark moments and to come back with
:53:28. > :53:32.that fight and determination, fantastic. This Teddy bear behind
:53:33. > :53:40.your back, who is this and why did you ride around with that under your
:53:41. > :53:47.back protector. This is a new charity that has been set up. It was
:53:48. > :53:51.set up by somebody who got diagnosed with cancer and the outcome of
:53:52. > :53:57.hearse isn't looking very good. She set up this charity to give people
:53:58. > :54:03.in her situation, not just with cancer, but who are terminally ill,
:54:04. > :54:09.a chance to enjoy their last days. I have never met someone so brave and
:54:10. > :54:16.it is an honour to be a patron of her charity. Mark Todd retired after
:54:17. > :54:23.Sydney, but came back in 2008 to ride in Hong Kong, Beijing. Now
:54:24. > :54:26.riding as well as ever. Those long legs helped him there. Jumped right
:54:27. > :54:35.down the bank. That is a long way down. Sits up again. That won't
:54:36. > :54:44.trouble him. Now comes to the Shogun Hollow. Caused an odd problem or
:54:45. > :54:49.two. Oh! Leaves his leg and again nearly - two legs on one side.
:54:50. > :54:55.Looking for his iron. Watch again. Toddy living dangerously here. Gets
:54:56. > :55:00.a good stride in. Has to shorten and gets close and catches his legs,
:55:01. > :55:06.because of the angle, flicks Toddy to the side. But stickability and
:55:07. > :55:12.perfection. Reminding the selectors that he can do the business. Hasty
:55:13. > :55:21.Imp over the keeper's brush. This is where you like the horses to be on
:55:22. > :55:26.the bridle. Point four of a penalty for every one of the seconds you see
:55:27. > :55:32.being clocked up in red. He was well up after dressage. So that will help
:55:33. > :55:37.him. The horse looking weary, but still responding. Most horses have
:55:38. > :55:41.finished very well. The going has tried out since the middle of the
:55:42. > :55:46.week and that's very much to the horse's benefit. Turning for home,
:55:47. > :55:58.going to be about 35 seconds I would think over. Here he comes to stop
:55:59. > :56:06.the clock. 34 seconds, 53.6 and a broad grin on his face. The crowd
:56:07. > :56:12.looking pretty tense as Britain's former European champion, Tina Took
:56:13. > :56:22.with his Star Witness. A beautiful piece of riding. This man twice gold
:56:23. > :56:27.medallist at the Olympics, heading this year for his sixth Olympics at
:56:28. > :56:33.the great age of 60 and look at the time. He is incredible. He has shown
:56:34. > :56:42.some great class, great stickability and he is well inside the time. Well
:56:43. > :56:46.done Toddy. Clear seven seconds inside the time, the magic is there
:56:47. > :56:52.still. Is it enough for the selectors? I would be disappointed
:56:53. > :56:57.if it is not. The other horse I have was in Kentucky last week and he was
:56:58. > :57:05.7th and this is also a good horse. Fingers crossed we will get there on
:57:06. > :57:15.one of them. Tina Cook European champion. Won an individual bronze
:57:16. > :57:18.in 2008. Now with Star Witness. Did well at Burleigh. Not the best
:57:19. > :57:29.dressage, but going well at cross country. Astier Nicola taking the
:57:30. > :57:33.long route. He is known for his speed across the country. This is a
:57:34. > :57:38.very fast horse. Look at the time, he is three seconds down. But they
:57:39. > :57:48.have been flying around the cross. They have taken the long route. .
:57:49. > :57:54.Tina had some wonderful owners and they have clubbed together to get
:57:55. > :58:01.another one. Beautifully ridden through there. Tina riding as well
:58:02. > :58:07.as ever. Look at the clock - 16 seconds under at that point. The
:58:08. > :58:11.first water splash and they don't like that. It is a fence that
:58:12. > :58:15.surprises the horses. Very uphill approach. They can't see the water
:58:16. > :58:21.until the last stride. In fact they can almost see the water unther the
:58:22. > :58:24.rail and the horse -- under the rail and the horse still isn't keen. They
:58:25. > :58:30.have got to get their act together now. She gives him a confidence pat,
:58:31. > :58:37.but she needs to be riding more positively. 49.7 her dressage score.
:58:38. > :58:47.Lovely line. Positive. That is what that if fence needs and sector split
:58:48. > :58:52.the quickest. They're flying. Really settling into a lovely rhythm. That
:58:53. > :58:59.is the hall mark of class. This lady has got that. That is for certain.
:59:00. > :59:05.The crowd sticking to this wonderful cross country test. It is really
:59:06. > :59:11.exciting. Another one just to land, just to stumble a bit. But Tina
:59:12. > :59:18.picks up Star Witness and out over that and up to the hollow. Still
:59:19. > :59:22.looking full of running. This course really does involve really judgment,
:59:23. > :59:26.pace, judgment and that has always been one of the strong points of
:59:27. > :59:37.Tina. Into the last third of the course. Astier Nicholas for France
:59:38. > :59:42.at the last and look at the time he has taken a pull. Thumbs up to his
:59:43. > :59:47.mates. That is pretty cool. This is some young rider and one that we are
:59:48. > :59:53.going to see a lot of in the future. Here is Zahra Tindall, she has got
:59:54. > :59:57.an uphill task. She has got to qualify still to get a chance of
:59:58. > :00:01.going to Rio. Having had quite a lot of time off, they have also too got
:00:02. > :00:09.to show their form. Remember they were in that silver medal team in
:00:10. > :00:20.London and of course Zahra a former world and European champion.
:00:21. > :00:29.And the second water splash for Alice with her horse.
:00:30. > :00:34.A sneaky little stop, I have to say. She didn't do much wrong there. He
:00:35. > :00:40.had a look at it, as he did the first water and now she has to get
:00:41. > :00:45.her wits about her and get him sorted out. The riders slightly
:00:46. > :00:52.underestimated the fence. It is not so easy. I think that might be
:00:53. > :00:59.calling it a day. In fact, that is three spots for Alice on the course.
:01:00. > :01:05.-- stops for Alice on the course. In fact, I think the grand jury will
:01:06. > :01:09.talk to her because she's gone for a fourth time and that could well give
:01:10. > :01:16.her some problems in terms of discipline.
:01:17. > :01:24.Out she goes. Alice Dunsdon with Fernhill Present.
:01:25. > :01:30.Well, here is Tina. Alice and Tina are related. Their mums are sisters.
:01:31. > :01:35.Meanwhile, that is not in this lady's mind at the moment. She's at
:01:36. > :01:42.the escalator. Not more than a quarter of a mile to home. It has
:01:43. > :01:47.looked very good on the clock to the Hollow. The horse has kept up the
:01:48. > :01:52.momentum. It would be great to have this lady back with the Rio Olympics
:01:53. > :01:59.in mind. Got a tremendous record, this horse without a lot of
:02:00. > :02:03.experience at the moment. It was so impressive at Burleigh and now
:02:04. > :02:08.looking good here and will gallop all the way home and that is what we
:02:09. > :02:14.want to see. Coming to the crossing - a big
:02:15. > :02:19.fence, tired horses tend to make it look bigger than ever, but not the
:02:20. > :02:24.lovely horse, Star Witness. The crowd is beginning to build in the
:02:25. > :02:29.arena. One of the great featuresor the riders to come into -- -
:02:30. > :02:33.features for the riders to come into - all the shouting and cheering and
:02:34. > :02:37.people coming into the arena for the big finish we have in prospect. And
:02:38. > :02:41.this is the fastest time we have seen. That is a very good round.
:02:42. > :02:45.Finishing 18 seconds inside the time.
:02:46. > :02:52.I am pretty certain it is the fastest round so far, Kristina Cook
:02:53. > :03:02.on Star witness. You flew around there. He is quite lazy. If I stop
:03:03. > :03:07.kicking, he slows down a bit. I trusted his thorough bred. How is
:03:08. > :03:11.the Vicarage Vee? It is so frightening coming to that. I have
:03:12. > :03:16.jumped it so many times over the last 20 years. The horse kept
:03:17. > :03:22.straight. It was magic. Back to another of the London silver medal
:03:23. > :03:29.team, Zara Tindall, with High Kingdom. Up the hill. The flag does
:03:30. > :03:38.fall down, but she was well inside it.
:03:39. > :03:43.The horse owned by Trevor Hemings. Emily King and Brookleigh. Brilliant
:03:44. > :03:45.dressage put her into second place. A lot of pressure on these young
:03:46. > :03:58.shoulders. If she's as cool as her mother
:03:59. > :04:02.there'll be no problem. Zara at the big New Pond. This horse has had the
:04:03. > :04:06.best part of a year on the sidelines. It is a big test for
:04:07. > :04:10.them. They are answering it. Zara has always been one for a big
:04:11. > :04:17.occasion. Slightly behind the clock. This is a horse which can gallop.
:04:18. > :04:26.And Emily had a great ride in France at the end of last year.
:04:27. > :04:30.Went a little bit far off that. The horse showing scope. The horse
:04:31. > :04:35.didn't worry about it. It was definitely a couple of feet too far
:04:36. > :04:40.away on the take off. Nice and close to that wall.
:04:41. > :04:46.The nice thing is Emily sits quietly. She doesn't fluster. Gives
:04:47. > :04:57.the horse time and lets him ease himself properly. Here is Zara now.
:04:58. > :05:04.She's with the approach. Oh... Oh, my word. They both had to work hard
:05:05. > :05:09.to survive that. They so nearly caught it, they could just have
:05:10. > :05:13.tipped over so easily. Well, that is a moment saved. Let's look again. As
:05:14. > :05:17.she comes around the corner, I was there with her father and Zara this
:05:18. > :05:23.other day when they walked this line. Walked and walked it and the
:05:24. > :05:27.horse drifted a fraction left. A great recovery.
:05:28. > :05:33.Well, it is certainly ice cream weather. It was forecast to get a
:05:34. > :05:40.bit warm and it certainly is. Emily King at the Mound. She has been with
:05:41. > :05:54.Mark Enning trying to improve her position and better balance
:05:55. > :06:02.Zara, meaning business. She's got to keep up this pace.
:06:03. > :06:04.As we have seen in the past High Kingdom is very quick across the
:06:05. > :06:19.country. Has to push... Shoulders, arms,
:06:20. > :06:26.everything going there. Emily King, over the big brush, now it is the
:06:27. > :06:32.Vicarage Vee. 20 years old, for this iconic fence. A great piece of
:06:33. > :06:39.riding. Spot on. As cool as a cucumber. Is that training doing
:06:40. > :06:44.good? And Zara is flying at the Keeper's Brush.
:06:45. > :06:49.Such a brilliant competitor and always comes up with the goods when
:06:50. > :06:52.it really matters. A little bit of pressure on here, the last
:06:53. > :06:57.combination. Now she's got to sit down and ride. How is the clock
:06:58. > :07:04.going? Is she going to make it? She's termed -- determined looking.
:07:05. > :07:09.Flying into the main arena. Listen to the crowds cheer her. They cheer
:07:10. > :07:15.her everywhere they go. Brilliant crowds in eventing. They are always
:07:16. > :07:20.supporting. She's over the time. How much closer can she get to the
:07:21. > :07:23.clock? She's a happy girl. Well done!
:07:24. > :07:38.Zara Tindall, you are nearly there. He's such a cool horse. At the
:07:39. > :07:43.beginning he was a little bit keen. I couldn't let the hand break off
:07:44. > :07:47.too much. I had a rubbish line into the Vicarage Vee. He stayed
:07:48. > :07:52.straight. To get his head up again. He is just awesome. He saved me some
:07:53. > :07:55.other place too, which hopefully wasn't on TV. So another one for
:07:56. > :08:05.Germany. A very experienced rider, Andreas
:08:06. > :08:09.Dibowski. Their trainer has changed these German riders and their
:08:10. > :08:15.cross-country riding. Emily King. Brookleigh at the
:08:16. > :08:21.Escalator. She's nearly home. She's ridden so well. She's of course been
:08:22. > :08:26.in the youth championships of the British teams and done pretty well.
:08:27. > :08:32.Had the odd tumble, but it has stood her in good stead. Can she get her
:08:33. > :08:36.second big international three event. November was her first. This
:08:37. > :08:41.is her second. It has always been a dream for this lady as she comes
:08:42. > :08:45.down to the Keeper's Brush. Time will be good. Whether it will be
:08:46. > :08:54.inside, I am not sure. It is certainly a round she's kept going.
:08:55. > :09:00.Jumps well over the Keeper's Brush. Now this Crossing. Emily wouldn't
:09:01. > :09:07.have ridden too many horses getting weary. Dives in. It is going to be
:09:08. > :09:13.long. Oh and he went to take off realised it was a long way away. The
:09:14. > :09:18.horse gets up. Emily on the floor. It would have been a hard landing
:09:19. > :09:25.for Emily. And that, I am afraid, is the end of her dream. She was so
:09:26. > :09:28.near, yet so far and of course having the full eliminator. She's
:09:29. > :09:33.pushing for the long stride. The ground is uneven here. He drifts a
:09:34. > :09:38.little bit right which makes the distance longer. If she could have
:09:39. > :09:41.been nearer that white flag, but unfortunately a very sad picture and
:09:42. > :09:48.Emily is out. It is good to see the horse up and
:09:49. > :09:52.indeed it is great to see Emily up, being helped away there. She is more
:09:53. > :10:02.concerned about the horse I would think than she is about herself.
:10:03. > :10:08.Twice runner up here, Andreas Dibowski, and he, of course, has
:10:09. > :10:17.been in the Olympics and won an Olympic medal.
:10:18. > :10:19.Very experienced. All that experience showing. Time a
:10:20. > :10:29.little behind, but not far. Marry is playing the role of groom
:10:30. > :10:33.and I saw you leave the tent hopefully to greet her as she
:10:34. > :10:38.finished and then it came to a crunching end. Very sad. I have done
:10:39. > :10:43.it myself. I have fallen at that fence when I was in the lead. Emily,
:10:44. > :10:48.unfortunately it happened to her as well. They are both fine and
:10:49. > :10:55.fantastic around the rest of the course. It will not put her off,
:10:56. > :11:01.she'll be back. Until that point you were having a terrific round? He
:11:02. > :11:07.felt good. I am over the moon with how it felt. Really annoying, but,
:11:08. > :11:09.hey. As your mum said before, you have many more years here. It can
:11:10. > :11:22.only get better. Former European champion back in
:11:23. > :11:29.1997, Bettina Hoy. Water Mill Stream is her horse.
:11:30. > :11:41.The Hunt'sman's Close now, with Tim Price. A brilliant line. Effortless
:11:42. > :11:44.there. The quickest I have seen through t Huntsman's Close.
:11:45. > :11:53.Very experienced. Good line. Sees her through. Nine seconds down. And
:11:54. > :12:00.Andreas Dibowski coming to the final fence. Still galloping. He's already
:12:01. > :12:06.over the time. But pretty close. A great dressage start of 43.7. How
:12:07. > :12:12.close can he get to the leader? He is kicking as he crosses the line.
:12:13. > :12:23.Into 11th position. Another great performance by another great German.
:12:24. > :12:27.Bettina Hoy coming to the Alexanders Silver Birch.
:12:28. > :12:37.Come on to the scene for the German team in the last year or two. And
:12:38. > :12:42.Tim Price, with Classic Moet. One of the fastest ever cross-country
:12:43. > :12:44.horses this. Produced by Karen Dixon now - a
:12:45. > :12:56.British team member for many years. Caught the lip, but so agile, so
:12:57. > :13:01.light on his feet and quick to recover. Bettina Hoy, into the
:13:02. > :13:05.arena. She will be over. Her best finish ever at Badminton was last
:13:06. > :13:10.year on this horse where they finished fifth and they are going to
:13:11. > :13:19.be right up there after this round. Another good round for Germany. 13
:13:20. > :13:27.seconds over. 49. 2. Kiwis are together. An impressive
:13:28. > :13:31.squad heading towards Rio. And she is one of those.
:13:32. > :13:42.Plenty of time on this turn. This horse jumps as though he's on
:13:43. > :13:48.springs. Lands away from the fences, so doesn't waste any time. Never
:13:49. > :13:54.wastes a second. Well, now another for France -
:13:55. > :14:01.Rodolphe Scherer, at the Outlet Mound. A good number of years now,
:14:02. > :14:05.spent two years over here - a long time part of the French team and you
:14:06. > :14:11.saw his experience. Had a hiccup earlier on. Overcame that and is
:14:12. > :14:15.safely through. Jonelle coming towards the end of
:14:16. > :14:23.the course. And we have seen some hairy turns there. And it looks like
:14:24. > :14:30.exercise in the arena at home for Jonelle. Here comes Nicola Wilson,
:14:31. > :14:35.with one of the top hopes for Britain - with Rio in mind. One too
:14:36. > :14:40.many at the corners and had a really good season last year.
:14:41. > :14:43.Disappointed at the end, particularly at the Europeans. She's
:14:44. > :14:53.very determined and great across-country. And Rodolphe
:14:54. > :14:58.Scherer, flying at the Vicarage Vee. And enormously, way out beyond the
:14:59. > :15:04.fence. Lapsed a little bit behind. But a good recovery.
:15:05. > :15:15.Here is Jonelle Price, one of the fastest horses in cross country.
:15:16. > :15:26.47.3 and they go ninth. New Zealand showing their strength.
:15:27. > :15:35.A little bit sticky there, put a great jump in. Extraordinary how the
:15:36. > :15:42.ride verse underestimated that pond. It has caused a fire amount of
:15:43. > :15:45.trouble. And stands off a mile! Great recovery, but there is a
:15:46. > :15:51.broken pin. That will be 11 penalties. The new ruling is if you
:15:52. > :15:59.break the pin there is 11 penalties added on. She is pushing, but it is
:16:00. > :16:05.almost impossible. The horse picks up she is stretching back, hills a
:16:06. > :16:10.cab. The horse is on its knees and a brilliant recovery. Sadly it look as
:16:11. > :16:14.if she is going to call ate day. You can -- call it a day. You understand
:16:15. > :16:21.why. There are more opportunities for this pair to perhaps show their
:16:22. > :16:28.true form. Brabham up in Yorkshire, an important competition in June.
:16:29. > :16:33.Nicola Wilson has retired One Two Many and the news from the British
:16:34. > :16:37.camp is not good so far. Very disappointing to see them walking
:16:38. > :16:41.off the course. They could be such an important part of team. Here is
:16:42. > :16:51.France now. What a day they have had. Rodolphe Scherer another of
:16:52. > :16:55.their best. Riding this grey horse. One remembers his round in the World
:16:56. > :17:03.Championships in Normandy. He had the crowd on their feet. Here is a
:17:04. > :17:08.great one for Britain, fantastic round at the European Championships
:17:09. > :17:15.last year for Jemma Tattersalls. Makes nothing of this big brush
:17:16. > :17:22.corners. Here comes Rodolphe Scherer. Slowly to the last, but he
:17:23. > :17:26.won't be many seconds over. Another experienced competitor looking to
:17:27. > :17:30.get in the squad for Rio for France. Goes 16th. The leaderboard Dom named
:17:31. > :17:49.by Germany. Can a British rider get into the top
:17:50. > :17:56.five? Here is one who might. Gemma Tattersall. Went well at Europeans,
:17:57. > :18:04.but didn't pull it off in the show jumping. They're very determined
:18:05. > :18:09.now. Lucy Jackson and Bosun at the Vicarage Vee. Didn't quite get the
:18:10. > :18:14.line right and pays the penalty. Good to see them both up. That was a
:18:15. > :18:19.nasty fall. But they're walking away. Probably more disappointed
:18:20. > :18:23.than anything else. The horse was an interesting one, the horse was
:18:24. > :18:28.fighting a bit on the approach. You can see his head is up. A bit
:18:29. > :18:33.arguing and he is not focussing where he is going. He is still head
:18:34. > :18:38.up and you should be looking at the jump and he suddenly sees it and he
:18:39. > :18:42.tries his heart out. Does an enormous jump, but in the wrong
:18:43. > :18:48.direction and wow, that was a nasty, but it is great to see them in full
:18:49. > :18:56.recovery. Fight for another day. There will be another competition
:18:57. > :19:03.next week for them. Arctic Soul at the new pond. Ex-race horse there.
:19:04. > :19:10.Another in that train a race horse competition. At the moment it is
:19:11. > :19:14.Jock Paget out in front in that competition. But she is well on her
:19:15. > :19:26.way. Just a four seconds is up on that time at this stage of the
:19:27. > :19:32.course. Danny Evans for Britain. Coming to Huntsman's Close. Did a
:19:33. > :19:42.good dressage test. A seriously good jumper. A bit drifted right. But
:19:43. > :19:50.they're OK. Huge stride this horse. Back with Gemma Tattersall at the
:19:51. > :19:56.Outlander Bank. . Several horses have stumbled. It makes that
:19:57. > :20:04.distance difficult. But not Gemma and Arctic Soul. As they come to the
:20:05. > :20:09.turn. This horse looks much more rideable now. Certainly setting up
:20:10. > :20:13.for this test of accuracy here. Does it well. Doesn't lose a lot of time
:20:14. > :20:25.and gets the results as a result of that very good set up. Danny
:20:26. > :20:33.galloping along, not in a big hurry. I know she is coming to a difficult
:20:34. > :20:45.combination at the mound. But a bit steady. At the turn. The horse is
:20:46. > :20:50.jumping well. But she is going to have to quicken away tr this fence
:20:51. > :20:56.to get back on the clock. Looks as if she is wasting too much. Two
:20:57. > :21:02.thirds of way round, still clear Gemma Tattersall. This horse has the
:21:03. > :21:10.speed to get home inside the time. 44.6 would put her in that top five.
:21:11. > :21:18.Lovely rhythm through. Really become a very good rider of cross country,
:21:19. > :21:23.Gemma. Here is Izzy Taylor on her second ride. Disappointed on
:21:24. > :21:30.Matilda, but she puts that behind her. Very tight turn. Very neat.
:21:31. > :21:43.Wasted not a second there. And a neat little pop and quickly turn
:21:44. > :21:48.away. Looking good. Now at the final, Gemma Tattersall quickens up.
:21:49. > :21:53.That is good to see. A horse full of running as they come into the arena.
:21:54. > :22:00.I'm sure time will be good. It is, 16 seconds to get home and they will
:22:01. > :22:06.do that no doubt whatsoever. This is good news for Britain. We wanted
:22:07. > :22:19.some and we have got it. And goes third. That is more like it. Gemma
:22:20. > :22:26.has gone into third place on Arctic Soul. He is incredible. He just eats
:22:27. > :22:32.up the ground. He skipped over Vicarage Vee like it was a pony club
:22:33. > :22:36.jump. I landed and I laughed to myself and thought, no, God
:22:37. > :22:49.concentrate, we have got lots more to go. But he is some machine. Here
:22:50. > :22:53.is Danni at the Vick rage visa. She is going attack and she got a gentle
:22:54. > :23:02.landing, but not pleasant for the horse. He said, I'm going home, you
:23:03. > :23:06.lot can get lost! One thing is certain he didn't look that
:23:07. > :23:10.convicted. Yes, she is riding forward, but not with enough energy
:23:11. > :23:14.and there wasn't a Gad stride and she tried to help the horse, but it
:23:15. > :23:21.was too little too late and they paid the penalty. I'm glad to see
:23:22. > :23:31.the horse off on his own. Looks a bit dejected poor Dani. It is a long
:23:32. > :23:37.walk home. Here is Izzy Taylor, still on the bridle at the Mirage
:23:38. > :23:45.Pond. Very good natural rider. She is not getting the response she
:23:46. > :23:52.would like from the horse. Christopher Burton for Australia. A
:23:53. > :23:57.great dressage test and one of the fastest horses ever at cross country
:23:58. > :24:04.I should think. Made nothing of that splash earlier on. So sharp in
:24:05. > :24:10.front. Look how neat he is. Very impressive start to the course. Here
:24:11. > :24:16.is Izzy Taylor around to the Vicarage Vee. She is going to long
:24:17. > :24:21.way. That is a good decision. It was here where her first ride came
:24:22. > :24:34.adrift and she retired. So over that and onward. After a brilliant ride
:24:35. > :24:41.earlier on, Oliver Townend comes to the New pond. The elbows are going,
:24:42. > :24:44.you can tell when he is determined, those elbows get going. Another a
:24:45. > :24:50.brilliant jump. But impressive on the time. Only a couple of seconds
:24:51. > :24:56.down avp it is a real galloping machine this, so should be able to
:24:57. > :25:02.make that up. He comes down the hill towards the Vicarage Vee.
:25:03. > :25:09.Christopher Burton, one of the best riders of cross country in the
:25:10. > :25:16.business. On this ex-Michael Young horse. A little deep there. But
:25:17. > :25:25.again well ridden at that narrow fence. Away he goes. Izzy Taylor has
:25:26. > :25:30.had to work hard on this horse. But the horse has grown in confidence
:25:31. > :25:36.and stature. We have seen her give it a couple of smacks, but she has
:25:37. > :25:40.an effect on the horse. If it needs confidence with a smack, she gives
:25:41. > :25:46.well, if it goes well, she gives it a pat. She is still riding forward.
:25:47. > :25:52.A bit weary on its leg, she gives it a pat, saying, thank you very much.
:25:53. > :25:58.Christopher Burton has been in Britain several seasons as he comes
:25:59. > :26:02.to the new pond. He had a very good dressage. At this point Michael
:26:03. > :26:07.Young has extended his lead. He is well over the corner. He is 16
:26:08. > :26:15.seconds up and not surprised at that and looking easy. Coming to the
:26:16. > :26:23.second last Izzy is still riding. Two strides and gets in a third
:26:24. > :26:29.ride. But she is still nimble. Still pushing for this clock. She will be
:26:30. > :26:33.happy to get this one round. Disa pointment earlier, but the horse is
:26:34. > :26:38.slowing down. She is still looking enthusiastic. Still got her ears
:26:39. > :26:43.semi pricked and very close to the time. Only a few seconds over. This
:26:44. > :26:49.will be a good one for the British selectors. They will be happy to see
:26:50. > :27:00.this. How many time faults? 15 seconds over. Into ninth position.
:27:01. > :27:05.Well done. Here is Olly Townend with Black Tie. An important contributor
:27:06. > :27:11.perhaps for Rio. Going the long way round. Coming to second of the two
:27:12. > :27:15.and the horse dropped the bit and suddenly up goes Ollie's happened. I
:27:16. > :27:22.suspect he felt the horse beginning to faulter and get tired and he
:27:23. > :27:29.calls it a day. That is again more disappointing news for Britain as
:27:30. > :27:41.Black Tie and Ollie Townend retire. Big frustration for Ollie. So near,
:27:42. > :27:45.yet so far. Christopher Burton coming to this hollow. Caused a
:27:46. > :27:54.surprising amount of trouble and another one has a problem. The horse
:27:55. > :27:59.left his left lowing Legg leg so low. Quite often we see riders
:28:00. > :28:03.sitting on the ground for a few seconds, a bit winded. Usually it is
:28:04. > :28:08.frustration. You can't believe it has happened. That is good news to
:28:09. > :28:13.see him up. That was a surprise. Probably one of the biggest
:28:14. > :28:20.surprises of the day. See it again. The horse really doesn't get high
:28:21. > :28:25.enough at all. Hits the hard part. Twists and sees his jockey disappear
:28:26. > :28:31.on the ground. Very surprising sight and it means Michael Young will have
:28:32. > :28:36.an extended lead after cross country. He does and he leads by
:28:37. > :28:40.nine penalty points. That is more than two fences. It is very tight
:28:41. > :28:54.for second place. Big mention for Tina Cook, the
:28:55. > :29:05.fastest round of the day. A fabulous clear. And also Zara Tindall. If she
:29:06. > :29:15.completes the show jumping she will have qualified. An Janet Breakwell
:29:16. > :29:22.who had a heavy fall and was kept in hospital. She has cracked ribs. But
:29:23. > :29:25.she will be riding again soon. The vet's inspection there were no
:29:26. > :29:34.problems for any of the leading contenders. So 32 jumped around
:29:35. > :29:38.clear. The most emotional story was Ben Hobday. You saw his interview.
:29:39. > :29:45.This was him coming into the show jumping. Bear in mind that in June
:29:46. > :29:52.he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was only given the
:29:53. > :29:57.all-clear in November. He got a huge ovation. Zara Tindall had to
:29:58. > :30:03.complete to qualify for Rio. She did so. She finished on 62 penalties.
:30:04. > :30:08.That should be good enough to finish top 25. And this is our current
:30:09. > :30:14.leader. Because Tina Cook on Star Witness jumped clear. She won a
:30:15. > :30:22.bronze in Beijing and a team bronze and silver in London.
:30:23. > :30:33.Let's join the action live. We're into the top nine. Kristina Cook
:30:34. > :30:38.leading on 49.7th going in at ninth place is Izzy Taylor, looking to
:30:39. > :30:50.Finnish the top ten here at Badminton.
:30:51. > :30:58.?10,000 to the ninth place. A clear round from Tina has taken her up six
:30:59. > :31:02.places. It is still so close that there's still more potential
:31:03. > :31:08.climbing for Tina. Let's go around the course with Ian.
:31:09. > :31:13.It is a good course here. It is quite technical - sort of bendy
:31:14. > :31:17.lines at the beginning and a few technical straight lines. It is
:31:18. > :31:21.mixed up, so it keeps the horse's interest. It is difficult the day
:31:22. > :31:32.after the cross-country the horses can get flat in the showjumping, as
:31:33. > :31:37.we see there. Izzy had one down. The footing round conditions yesterday
:31:38. > :31:40.were almost perfect. The horses are springing today: The showjumping
:31:41. > :31:44.ground is very good. They are on the top of the ground and the horses all
:31:45. > :31:50.look wonderful this morning as they trot up. That was one of the more
:31:51. > :31:58.technical lines there. Around the corner.
:31:59. > :32:07.And seven into this combination one in one. We've had a few parts of
:32:08. > :32:12.that combination now. It was nice for this horse. Coming to the end of
:32:13. > :32:31.the course. So one down means that she drops
:32:32. > :32:42.down one place. 50.4. Kristina Cook into the top ten, with
:32:43. > :32:50.Star Witness. The poles down are very, very expensive. So, only four
:32:51. > :32:54.have gone clear in the horses that we've had in this afternoon's
:32:55. > :32:59.jumping. 11 of them and then there were eight clear rounds in the 28
:33:00. > :33:03.that we jumped this morning. Of course, there is the added pressure
:33:04. > :33:09.with the scores so tight and quite expensive poles if they go down.
:33:10. > :33:12.They are expensive. You are right, the morning's showjumping, there's
:33:13. > :33:15.no pressure on the riders, it is a question of competing rather than
:33:16. > :33:19.getting into the placing. There were a lot of clear rounds. This
:33:20. > :33:24.afternoon, the first two jumped clear. We thought, wow, this will be
:33:25. > :33:28.a walk in the park for them all, but then the problems starting. The
:33:29. > :33:34.pressure is on. Here we have Oliver Townend for Britain. The wonderful
:33:35. > :33:39.Armada. Such a brilliant trail blazes round yesterday. In fact,
:33:40. > :33:43.made the cross-country look easy and finished inside the time. It proved
:33:44. > :33:47.that the cross-country was not that easy.
:33:48. > :33:55.It has not always been the easiest in this phrase. Saw him walking the
:33:56. > :33:59.course earlier with the previous rider of this horse.
:34:00. > :34:06.You might remember that in fact this time last year he was in second
:34:07. > :34:15.place after cross-country and then had a number of poles down. Paul and
:34:16. > :34:20.Diana have been super owners, both for Andrew and for Olly, but they
:34:21. > :34:25.have had disapointeding times when they have been so near triumph.
:34:26. > :34:33.Already with eight penalties. It looks as if he's been trying to ride
:34:34. > :34:37.this a little bit more forward and less restricting in the showjumping.
:34:38. > :34:44.He's good across-country, but he's not reliable in this phase. Has no
:34:45. > :34:47.real respect for the coloured poles. And Oliver is chopping and changes
:34:48. > :34:52.the way he's riding the horse. Trying to get him thinking. You can
:34:53. > :34:56.see he finds the distances short because he's got this massive
:34:57. > :35:00.stride. Such a great horse. So frustrating when you have these
:35:01. > :35:06.downs and expensive, I might add. Yes, indeed. Of course Olly had
:35:07. > :35:13.frustration in his other horse, well placed after the dressage. Actually
:35:14. > :35:18.he pulled up, retired in the last part of the course. Disappointing
:35:19. > :35:23.for Oliver Townend. In all 20 jumping penalties. 66.2 and he drops
:35:24. > :35:35.down some 13 places. You can see he gets quick and holly
:35:36. > :35:42.ver can't -- and Oliver can't shorten. The horse doesn't want to
:35:43. > :35:48.shorten. Well a beneficialry of that is Britain's Tina Cook. She goes up
:35:49. > :35:53.another place. She's into eighth. She couldn't have dreamt that to
:35:54. > :36:04.happen, I don't think, even if she had crossed everything.
:36:05. > :36:08.?12.500 to eighth. Not only clear... So Tina Cook talking to Clare now.
:36:09. > :36:16.Yes, because Tina is our leader. Congratulations. Gosh, that is a
:36:17. > :36:20.lovely horse, Star Witness. We have a lovely relationship together. He
:36:21. > :36:24.came out, even after that cross-country yesterday. He didn't
:36:25. > :36:29.half try for me in there. The bigger the event the better you ride. You
:36:30. > :36:34.have proven if you are selected for a British team you will be a key
:36:35. > :36:38.selector? I hope the selectors are listening to you. I prep them in the
:36:39. > :36:43.one day events, don't prime very much. This is what makes me tick and
:36:44. > :36:46.what I absolutely love, at this level of competition, taking on the
:36:47. > :36:51.best in the world. You have moved into the top ten. You will watch the
:36:52. > :36:57.others closely, very closely. I am so pleased with the horse. He's
:36:58. > :37:00.pulled out another personal best. The scores are ridiculously close.
:37:01. > :37:03.All the pennies counting towards that final total. Well done you.
:37:04. > :37:24.Thank you. Astier was in seventh place. They
:37:25. > :37:26.are now in all five horses, all within a fence.
:37:27. > :37:45.This is one of the fastest horses on the cross-country course. It is ak
:37:46. > :37:51.actually jumping very well. Can flick the odd pole out.
:37:52. > :37:54.And again he got a little brave in that related distance and paid the
:37:55. > :37:56.penalty at the middle part of the combination. So, that is a couple
:37:57. > :38:18.down. Another expensive round. Only the final one to go. And that
:38:19. > :38:21.has dropped him down seven places places.
:38:22. > :38:30.Certainly pressure making a big difference to this course in the top
:38:31. > :38:33.20. Yes, you can see here Astier boots that middle element out big
:38:34. > :38:39.time. It wasn't even just a casual rub that one. You are right, as we
:38:40. > :38:43.get nearer the final placings, the money gets bigger and better and the
:38:44. > :38:47.riders feel the pressure and they all want to have a go at winning it
:38:48. > :38:52.and then the nerves creep in. It is all about having the cool, calm,
:38:53. > :38:59.collected attitude and not translating the nerves to the horse.
:39:00. > :39:09.The New Zealand combination which really impressed here yesterday - in
:39:10. > :39:16.sixth place it is Clarke Johnstone with Balmoral Sensation. Risky to
:39:17. > :39:20.bring a horse from New Zealand, but the change of the seasons of course
:39:21. > :39:26.and he showed what a really good horse he S three times he's been
:39:27. > :39:30.national champion in New Zealand. Clarke has been here before. Been in
:39:31. > :39:35.New Zealand since 2014. He would love to clinch a top six point. In
:39:36. > :39:46.sixth. Impressive so far. Brave to that oxer.
:39:47. > :39:50.He paid the penalty a little bit. He was a little close to that vertical.
:39:51. > :39:57.It looks as if he's got a conscience. They have to want to
:39:58. > :40:01.leave these poles up, if the horse has disdain, little respect for the
:40:02. > :40:06.poles, they there is little anyone can do. They have to be as
:40:07. > :40:16.competitive as the rider and want to leave them standing.
:40:17. > :40:22.The famous Spanish international showjumping has been helping the New
:40:23. > :40:28.Zealanders for a number of years now and he's made a big impact. Still
:40:29. > :40:36.clear. A clear round could put the pressure on as he turns for home.
:40:37. > :40:47.So, he's doing a pretty good job on this horse. The final fence, and
:40:48. > :40:53.yes, a lovely clear round. So, he stays on 45.6. It will guarantee him
:40:54. > :40:57.sixth place. There is four within a fence.
:40:58. > :41:02.Clare, what is the news? Clarke going into the lead for New
:41:03. > :41:06.Zealand. We have big names to come, including Mark Todd, who has won the
:41:07. > :41:11.title here four times and is 60. Our leader is Michael Jung of Germany.
:41:12. > :41:16.This is his father here in white with the cap on. He does all the
:41:17. > :41:20.training with him. He was telling us about the relationship between him
:41:21. > :41:26.and his horse, he adores Sam. They trust each other entirely. Michael
:41:27. > :41:30.is a pure, good show-jumper. He competes on the professional
:41:31. > :41:35.circuit. He can have two knockdowns and still win the title. Let's point
:41:36. > :41:42.out the leading British rider, Gemma Tattersall, she will go in third
:41:43. > :41:48.last. We wish her good luck. Now Jonathan Paget, known in the
:41:49. > :41:52.competitor's area as Jock - winner of course in 2013, when he pipped
:41:53. > :42:03.Michael Jung at the very final show jump fence. That was on Clifton
:42:04. > :42:08.Promise. Now on Clifton Lush. 45. 2. Still a fence between the three
:42:09. > :42:17.horses above him. He cannot afford a fence down to go below his colleague
:42:18. > :42:20.Clarke Johnstone. Well, that is one away, ex-penive. A little tight in
:42:21. > :42:27.the back legs of that previous fence.
:42:28. > :42:30.It is so tempting at this stage when the horses have been around that
:42:31. > :42:34.gruelling cross-country to protect the front end. They look after the
:42:35. > :42:42.horse. Then the risk of doing that is that they drop their back legs on
:42:43. > :42:50.the poles. One down, he stays just ahead of
:42:51. > :42:54.Tina Cook. 49.2 is what Jock is on at the moment.
:42:55. > :43:09.Tina is on 49.7. The time really lean yentd. A lot of
:43:10. > :43:17.horses getting well inside. Four it is. 49.2. He will drop the one
:43:18. > :43:22.place, Clarke Johnstone from New Zealand will move up to fifth.
:43:23. > :43:29.One down for Jonathan Paget means Clarke is our leader on a horse who
:43:30. > :43:35.has always been a good show-jumper. He is. I have done a lot in New
:43:36. > :43:39.Zealand with him. It is different when you jump cross-country the day
:43:40. > :43:42.before. It is a different feeling. Your first Badminton experience -
:43:43. > :43:47.you must be enjoying this? It is amazing - it is the best horse show
:43:48. > :43:53.in the world. We are about to see Mark Todd go - he's in the arena
:43:54. > :43:58.now. As a young New Zealand rider with this guy riding to the level he
:43:59. > :44:07.is. He is quite inspirational, not quite, hugely. Sometimes our younger
:44:08. > :44:11.ones have a go ourselves, but he's an amazing athlete and someone we
:44:12. > :44:19.all aspire to be like. Let's see how he gets on. Thank you.
:44:20. > :44:22.Sir Mark Todd these days. Two brilliant recoveries on the
:44:23. > :44:29.cross-country when he could easily have hit the hit. Those long legs
:44:30. > :44:36.did the business. 44.8. This man rods in the pure showjumping
:44:37. > :44:43.international Olympics of Barcelona. So, this is a phase that he doesn't
:44:44. > :44:48.find too difficult. It is something which most of the New Zealand riders
:44:49. > :44:53.do actually. They show jump a lot of their horses, not only the event
:44:54. > :45:02.horses, but pure showjumping horses. They do ak sell in this phase and he
:45:03. > :45:07.was saying Sir Mark would back off and let the younger ones get in. The
:45:08. > :45:12.way he rode yesterday it looks like he's not thinking about backing up.
:45:13. > :45:18.He's always been so brilliant in this phase at helping horses that
:45:19. > :45:22.aren't particularly the best jumping in -- jumpers in the world.
:45:23. > :45:32.Turns for home. Two left. Four times winner. Double Olympic gold
:45:33. > :45:37.medallist. Could be in Rio as a rider and a trainer and he certainly
:45:38. > :45:42.is going to hold on to fourth place. Clear round and that really puts the
:45:43. > :45:48.pressure on. He is just over 10 marks behind the leader. But he is
:45:49. > :45:59.going to secure a top five place for sure. A man who lives up the road in
:46:00. > :46:05.Wiltshire so, the crowd know this man and they adore him. A full house
:46:06. > :46:12.here, history very much in the wind, with Michael Jung on the edge of a
:46:13. > :46:15.second Grand Slam of eventing and this is a really special afternoon
:46:16. > :46:30.to be here at badminton. Out goes Mark Todd and in comes the
:46:31. > :46:40.leading British rider. Could be in line for the Butler Troughy. Trophy.
:46:41. > :46:45.It is Gemma Tattersall. Arctic Soul. A brilliant performance yesterday
:46:46. > :46:54.and she is just putting her finger to her mouth, because this horse
:46:55. > :47:05.does react. He is an ex-race horse. There is a thousand pound prize for
:47:06. > :47:11.the best race horse. Gemma is in line for this prize. Jon Paget is
:47:12. > :47:22.the one behind her and he has one fence down. They did a great
:47:23. > :47:27.performance in the cross country in the Europeans, but disappointed in
:47:28. > :47:32.the showjumping. Not the easiest of showjumpers. He has not been the
:47:33. > :47:36.easiest, but he is overly enthusiastic. He wants to get on
:47:37. > :47:42.with it. He has a great jump and yesterday was just fantastic. Gemma
:47:43. > :47:47.and this horse looked so settled and established and by far the best
:47:48. > :47:52.round I have seen from this combination. Let's hope we can
:47:53. > :47:58.emulate that in the showjumping. He was asking the crowd to stay quiet.
:47:59. > :48:03.He has some ear covers on to help deaden the noise from the crowd.
:48:04. > :48:06.When they have been on the racecourse, you want to make sure
:48:07. > :48:13.they're settled in the atmosphere and not let the atmosphere get to
:48:14. > :48:14.them and that quickens them up and they lose concentration and respect
:48:15. > :48:27.for what they're doing. What is very important here is the
:48:28. > :48:35.temperament of the rider. She is looking much more cool and calm than
:48:36. > :48:42.she did in those Europeans. That again, riding in a team for the
:48:43. > :48:45.first time it has that effect on you and here they're individuals, but
:48:46. > :48:50.they're striving to get that place in Rio. She certainly doing her
:48:51. > :48:58.reputation an enormous amount of good so far. Just two to go. Time's
:48:59. > :49:09.all right. Just the last. And does it! In style! That surely books her
:49:10. > :49:14.ticket to Rio in August. 44.6. She is 10 points behind the leader. Hard
:49:15. > :49:26.to catch. But she has done all she could. So Mark Todd stays in third
:49:27. > :49:31.place. In fourth place, Gemma Tattersall in third. Two more to go,
:49:32. > :49:36.Mark Todd could move up into the top three. Whatever happens, you have
:49:37. > :49:40.had a hugely successful time. It has been brilliant. After the
:49:41. > :49:46.disappointment of the dressage, I thought he could have been up there.
:49:47. > :49:50.But he has been brilliant since and I can finish no worse than fourth
:49:51. > :49:56.and that is not a bad result. You said after the cross country, you
:49:57. > :50:00.hope you'd had done enough. If you go to Rio how many Olympics will
:50:01. > :50:05.that be? I have competed in seven and been to eight. I have lost
:50:06. > :50:12.track. It is so long. In London there was problems getting on buses
:50:13. > :50:19.and things. Yes they kept thinking I can't have been an athlete and kept
:50:20. > :50:24.trying to kick me off. Well you are a brilliant athlete. Well done.
:50:25. > :50:32.Thank you. It is two left and they're both from Germany. Here is a
:50:33. > :50:47.name that has been top of eventing for a wile, Andreas Ostholt. No 40
:50:48. > :50:56.it is. The 13-year-old. He had a very good round on this horse
:50:57. > :51:04.yesterday. 43.4. So he is just over two fences behind his colleague
:51:05. > :51:10.Michael Jung, who is going for a first German win in this
:51:11. > :51:13.Championship. A wonderful trophy. And of course the Grand Slam of
:51:14. > :51:21.eventing. Can this man put the pressure on? Stay clear. You said
:51:22. > :51:28.earlier the time here for the showjumping has been lenient
:51:29. > :51:31.compared to previous years and it it has taken some pressure off the
:51:32. > :51:36.riders. They can take their time. But there is plenty other pressure.
:51:37. > :51:40.There is a bit of a rub with the back feet there. He gets away with
:51:41. > :51:48.it. Sometimes you can benefit from that. A lit p -- a little tap and
:51:49. > :51:57.the horse thinks the I had better go higher. Gemma Tattersall and
:51:58. > :52:03.Britain's Arctic Soul could benefit. An interesting horse to watch
:52:04. > :52:07.jumping. He looks dare I say fairly careful, but he sort of steps over
:52:08. > :52:14.the fences. His body doesn't get very high. His legs do all the work.
:52:15. > :52:19.That was a bit risky. But he got away with it. Has he gone? No, it
:52:20. > :52:33.stayed. Turns for home. He is over the last. We are going to
:52:34. > :52:44.get our first German victory whatever. First ever German victory
:52:45. > :52:51.here at Bad minuteton. Minton. -- at Bad Minton. This could be Germany's
:52:52. > :52:58.afternoon and as you're aware, the Olympics are in mind. Michael Jung
:52:59. > :53:02.is taking his time before he goes in and gives us a chance to catch up
:53:03. > :53:10.with the leading British rider bgs you will be third at worst. Well
:53:11. > :53:16.done. I can't believe it. I can't believe Arctic Soul jumped a clear
:53:17. > :53:20.round. You did such a job, you calmed the crowd down, you know how
:53:21. > :53:25.fizzy he can be. He is wants to jump a clear round, but he gets
:53:26. > :53:32.frightened and worried and that is when he is not thinking about what
:53:33. > :53:37.he is doing. When we go showjumping, he jumps clear rounds, because there
:53:38. > :53:42.is no crowd. So I was pretending I was at my local place and not here
:53:43. > :53:49.and he jumped clear. Into the arena now the man who has led from the
:53:50. > :53:58.beginning and it on the verge of doing something only Pippa Funnell
:53:59. > :54:07.has done before. I know one viewer who will be watching and that is
:54:08. > :54:13.Pippa. Did it in 2003. Won Badminton that day. Michael Jung started his
:54:14. > :54:20.consecutive three at Burleigh last September. Then a fantastic victory
:54:21. > :54:24.in Kentucky on his other good horse. Which has led him here to the
:54:25. > :54:36.richest prize in the sport of eventing. The grand slam worth
:54:37. > :54:45.$350,000 and the ?80,000 first price here. A lot at stake in the next 60
:54:46. > :54:53.seconds. He has always been reliable in this phase. But he's particularly
:54:54. > :54:57.clear over the fences. He is stringing off his feet. He is
:54:58. > :55:03.getting way up in the air. I don't think he has ever had more than two
:55:04. > :55:09.down. Most of the time he has had clear rounds. But he was beaten here
:55:10. > :55:16.in 2013. Heed that very last fence down. He has got to have more than
:55:17. > :55:22.two down here to get beaten. He is turning for home. Two left. Is this
:55:23. > :55:29.the first Grand Slam of eventing since 2002? Many thought it would
:55:30. > :55:38.never be done again. And he's there! He is there! He has led from start
:55:39. > :55:44.to finish and the crowd rise to salute a wonderful hero. He was
:55:45. > :55:54.Olympic, world and European. He holds two of those titles now. But
:55:55. > :56:00.now has won Grand Slam of venting and takes the Mitsubishi motors
:56:01. > :56:07.trophy, fantastic. What more can you say about him? He is incredible. He
:56:08. > :56:15.has taken this sport on to another level. He is something for every
:56:16. > :56:24.other ride rider to drive to beat. Phenomenal. So we have seen history
:56:25. > :56:31.here at Badminton today, Michael Jung and Sam winning the Grand Slam
:56:32. > :56:37.of eventing. He also BPs the first German -- becomes the first German
:56:38. > :56:44.to win at Badminton. I want to say well done and to pay tribute to how
:56:45. > :56:51.good Michael is. Thanks a lot. I'm so happy you can't believe. I was so
:56:52. > :56:57.unlucky in the warm up, I lost two times a shoe. I lost again at the
:56:58. > :57:01.third last fence a shoe. We decided the ground is perfect. We have to
:57:02. > :57:07.try without the front shoe. And... So I'm so glad. So happy it is
:57:08. > :57:14.unbelievable. We are joining in with the rest of German team. Tell me how
:57:15. > :57:22.big a deal it will be in Germany and how good a rider Mickey is. Y. Yes
:57:23. > :57:32.he is something special. It is difficult to find words for it. He
:57:33. > :57:37.is here, the Badminton champion, there is Joachim. You did it and led
:57:38. > :57:43.from start to finish and you now have the record winning score at
:57:44. > :57:48.Badminton. Lowest score ever? I can say nothing, I'm so proud of my
:57:49. > :57:55.horse. He jumped a fantastic clear round. I'm very happy about him. We
:57:56. > :58:02.say always in my head that this is not a special competition. It is
:58:03. > :58:07.very normal. Just easy going. Concentrate and do normal on an easy
:58:08. > :58:19.competition. But this is unbelievable. This is really... A
:58:20. > :58:24.big feeling. Thank you so much to every people they help me that I can
:58:25. > :58:31.ride such a good horse. I'm very happy about my whole team. You have
:58:32. > :58:48.made history. Well done. Thank you. Well here is the full result.
:58:49. > :58:57.The New Zealanders packing in there. Tina Cook climbing. A great
:58:58. > :59:03.competition and history being made by the win and the Grand Slam of
:59:04. > :59:07.eventing for Michael Jung and Sam. It is an extraordinary performance.
:59:08. > :59:12.They call him Mr Ice, because he remains so cool. He said he was
:59:13. > :59:16.trying to play down the magnitude of being the first German winner here,
:59:17. > :59:21.but you could see how much it meant. Coming up next on BBC Two we have
:59:22. > :59:30.got Rugby League action, Challenge Cup and it will be good and also on
:59:31. > :59:37.the red button the basketball league play-off finals. Details on that and
:59:38. > :59:44.next week the women's FA Cup final. Here in the sunshine I hope you have
:59:45. > :59:47.enjoyed a stunning three-day event and a bit of history for the Germans
:59:48. > :59:52.and Michael Jung. Goodbye.
