:08:48. > :08:56.better! Here comes Usain Bolt! And Usain Bolt gets it! Bolt, he has
:08:57. > :08:59.saved his title! He has saved his reputation! He may have even saved
:09:00. > :09:02.his sport! One of the moments of the year -
:09:03. > :09:04.Bolt beating Gatlin. Over in 9.79 seconds, but one we'll
:09:05. > :09:07.remember for a long time. Usain is a special athlete indeed,
:09:08. > :09:10.and so is our first contender for tonight's main award,
:09:11. > :09:12.as the Beijing World Championships saw Greg Rutherford leap
:09:13. > :09:28.into the record books to complete 2015 has not been a bad year. Our
:09:29. > :09:37.son celebrated his first birthday. We got a new hoover. Cordless. Oh,
:09:38. > :09:43.and in August, I became the one -- long jump world champion. Last year
:09:44. > :09:47.by won the European Championships and the Commonwealth Games. I do
:09:48. > :09:53.have my critics are and some people have called me lucky. Affect timing.
:09:54. > :09:57.But I arrived in Beijing knowing that I was one jump away from
:09:58. > :10:01.completing the set and holding all four major titles. Only four other
:10:02. > :10:05.GB athletes have ever managed to do that. For the life of me I cannot
:10:06. > :10:13.think who. He looks to complete the set... Long jump is a funny old
:10:14. > :10:16.event. Run as fast as you can... I have had years of practice. I can
:10:17. > :10:24.tell you, it gets pretty intense. Yes! We are in the fourth round.
:10:25. > :10:31.8.29 is his lead. He is looking to extend it. Oh, Cheadle jump!
:10:32. > :10:39.Rutherford takes gold here in the birds nest! It is a dream come true
:10:40. > :10:47.to take all four major titles. Hold on... Olympic, European,
:10:48. > :10:51.Commonwealth and now world champion. With the Olympics on the horizon I
:10:52. > :10:53.am working extra hard to try to top that podium again. Some people say I
:10:54. > :10:59.am lucky. I am. Good boy. He jumped for joy again this year,
:11:00. > :11:32.so please give it up Quite a reception. It is amazing,
:11:33. > :11:38.the harder you train, the luckier you get! Absolutely! But we do have
:11:39. > :11:45.to work pretty hard at times. And now, you are in what we can call the
:11:46. > :11:49.famous five. When you add those names, Linford Christie, Jonathan
:11:50. > :12:01.Edwards, Daley Thompson,'s Dunnell, and you are there amongst them...
:12:02. > :12:04.Yes, it really is very odd for me to even consider myself amongst those
:12:05. > :12:10.guys. They are not just synonymous with athletics but with British
:12:11. > :12:13.sport. People we have all grown up watching and enjoying. But for me
:12:14. > :12:17.and all of these guys, they will tell you there is always a journey
:12:18. > :12:21.and a lot of people who help along the way. I would like to mention at
:12:22. > :12:26.this point somebody who sadly we lost this week. A man who was very
:12:27. > :12:33.close to my heart and helped me a lot when I was a youngster. A man
:12:34. > :12:37.called Falona, who sadly lost his battle with cancer and sadly is no
:12:38. > :12:45.longer with us. I would like to thank him for everything he did for
:12:46. > :12:47.me. He was integral to everything. I know you will take inspiration from
:12:48. > :12:53.him and from so many different parts of your life going forward to Rio.
:12:54. > :13:00.But you are a dad now. So much has changed as you build up towards
:13:01. > :13:04.trying to retain that Olympic crown? That little man there has absolutely
:13:05. > :13:08.changed everything for me but in such a positive way. I love getting
:13:09. > :13:13.home from training and just hanging out with him and having a lot of
:13:14. > :13:17.fun. He is a wonderful little boy. For me he has given me new vigour. I
:13:18. > :13:22.feel excited to get out there and jump and hopefully make him proud.
:13:23. > :13:27.Ultimately what we do, all of us, it is interesting, we do a sporting
:13:28. > :13:30.event. I want to be good not just on the track but off as well and
:13:31. > :13:33.hopefully one day make him very proud.
:13:34. > :13:35.Good luck tonight - our first contender,
:13:36. > :14:00.In the season of ice, plunging is an art. Lizzy Yarnold marries muscle
:14:01. > :14:08.and skeleton as a world champion. Gary Anderson won the PDC. Scott
:14:09. > :14:12.Mitchell was king at the BDO. Lisa Ashton was Queen. In the FA Cup,
:14:13. > :14:24.Chelsea got caught in a northern storm. Winners can forget. In the
:14:25. > :14:28.League Cup, Mourinho's men reigned supreme. The Scottish League Cup was
:14:29. > :14:34.won by Celtic. At the other end of the world, the weather was serene.
:14:35. > :14:43.The tennis was all Serena. Djokovic outmanoeuvred Murray in four sets.
:14:44. > :14:48.There were reddish winners. Including Andrew Luck porn and
:14:49. > :14:55.Jordanne Whiley. From Australia to America, the Super Bowl grit people.
:14:56. > :15:11.Dame Sarah Storey's story of success continues. From AP McCoy, a final
:15:12. > :15:18.pool win. In cricket, England fell at the first.
:15:19. > :15:24.The lovely tones of Dervla Kerwan. The voice of our reviews tonight.
:15:25. > :15:26.Football now and the Women's World Cup.
:15:27. > :15:28.Watched by millions in the UK, the tournament reached new heights
:15:29. > :15:30.and a new audience as England reached the semi-finals.
:15:31. > :15:32.The story though ended in brutal fashion -
:15:33. > :15:34.no change there - but it was a fantastic achievement
:15:35. > :15:37.by the lionesses and playing a starring role was our
:15:38. > :15:49.This summer, women's football changed forever. Lucia, Roberta,
:15:50. > :16:03.Bronze was at the heart of that change. Half English, half
:16:04. > :16:10.Portugese, 100% north-east. She was the star Alnwick Town but at 12 was
:16:11. > :16:13.no longer able to play with the boys but tough by nature, nothing would
:16:14. > :16:20.stand in the way of her dream The moment the England players have
:16:21. > :16:26.worked so hard for. Persistence paid off in Per Canada this summer in the
:16:27. > :16:30.most dramatic fashion. COMMENTATOR: An absolute belter. It
:16:31. > :16:34.takes a certain player to get the nation off their feet, to inspire
:16:35. > :16:40.their country to aer World Cup semifinal. Something even more
:16:41. > :16:46.special. COMMENTATOR: A she has done it again. Not since Italia 90,
:16:47. > :16:49.before even my time, had we experienced anything like this.
:16:50. > :16:57.Suddenly, England expects. Instead, it was a familiar World Cup
:16:58. > :17:02.heartbreak. COMMENTATOR: Hit the bar, no, no. England are out.
:17:03. > :17:12.Perhaps their best player on the day has put through her own goal. Gaza's
:17:13. > :17:16.tears swapped. But these Lionesses had their own dreams. Aspiring a new
:17:17. > :17:22.generation. Breaking Germany from 12 yards. A breakthrough moment. The
:17:23. > :17:28.Americans crowned champions, but England edged closer England with a
:17:29. > :17:32.third-place finish. The best efforts since '66 and a defining moment for
:17:33. > :17:39.our women's game, inspired by the fullback that excelled amongst the
:17:40. > :17:45.world's reathlete. Now, my daughter wants a different B on her back.
:17:46. > :17:52.England got the bronze. So have we tonight. Joined by members of the
:17:53. > :18:02.England Women's Football team. Please welcome Lucy Bronze.
:18:03. > :18:14.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:18:15. > :18:19.Lucy, fabulous achievement by yourself and the team here with you
:18:20. > :18:25.this evening. What was the secret to the success? I mean everyone asks
:18:26. > :18:28.that to us, obviously. I think we have always had the talent within
:18:29. > :18:33.the team. Great players. World class players but I think this year, the
:18:34. > :18:36.team kind of got together and we had that real belief which I think
:18:37. > :18:41.before we have never had. It was kind of an inner belief. Once we
:18:42. > :18:44.started performing well, it was as if the whole nation believed in us.
:18:45. > :18:47.We have never had that before, as the women's football team. We have
:18:48. > :18:51.never had that backing and support from our nation and we felt that
:18:52. > :18:54.going through the rest of the tournament. The nation was certainly
:18:55. > :18:58.gripped. No doubt about it. You reached the semifinals. What a
:18:59. > :19:03.heartbreaking moment, especially for Laura behind us. I mean, being a
:19:04. > :19:07.footballer, anyone getting a disappointing result in a world kind
:19:08. > :19:13.of stage, it is disappointing but I think the thing about it, we kind of
:19:14. > :19:20.had a bitter sweet ending, we played another game to end on a eye. We
:19:21. > :19:23.played Germany. A medal. We had never got a medal, reaching that
:19:24. > :19:29.far. To have that second chance, to beat them the way we did and to come
:19:30. > :19:33.home with a smile on our faces is still a good ending anding so we are
:19:34. > :19:36.proud of. You scored a couple of goals yourself on the way to the
:19:37. > :19:41.bons medal. Where do you think this'll take women's football? Well,
:19:42. > :19:44.look today, and the fact we are here on the stage at this kind of event.
:19:45. > :19:47.It has never happened before. Women's football is finally on the
:19:48. > :19:52.map. We have the men's to compare against. Everyone does but we have
:19:53. > :19:55.made our own stamp on our Weah. We are really proud of that. For me
:19:56. > :20:00.personal lane on behalf of the girls, we think it is just the
:20:01. > :20:03.beginning. -- for me personally and on behalf of the girls.
:20:04. > :20:08.There is still a lot more to come from us. Well, you are comfortably
:20:09. > :20:12.beating the men at the moment. You did us all proud.
:20:13. > :20:21.Ladies and gentlemen, our second contender...
:20:22. > :20:36.Gold medal to James Guy. World Champion, gold to Britain. Superb
:20:37. > :20:42.dive from Tom Daley. Well done, Becky. Goodness gracious me, an
:20:43. > :20:46.utterly brilliant swim. The new World Record for Great Britain.
:20:47. > :21:21.Adam Peaty is a very, very rare athlete. He is one of British
:21:22. > :21:26.swimming's greatest ever. He is a privilege to just watch. And just to
:21:27. > :21:31.be able to say I know him. The months before the World Record in
:21:32. > :21:36.April, I knew he was capable of doing something quite insane.
:21:37. > :21:41.Goodness me, Peaty wins the gold. So pleased for the little lad, I'd
:21:42. > :21:46.coached since 14, with a bad haircut. A very special moment for
:21:47. > :21:49.me. The pressure was on him when he went to the World Championships. He
:21:50. > :21:57.was the number 1. He had broken the World Record. He was now the guy to
:21:58. > :22:02.watch. The 50 m breaststroke, just insane. He is well-placed. He
:22:03. > :22:07.absolutely swam his perfect race. COMMENTATOR: He has got it at the
:22:08. > :22:13.last? He has. A crowd pleaser. What a superstar. I mean the 100m. From a
:22:14. > :22:20.coaching view, it was not easy to watch. COMMENTATOR: Now it is a very
:22:21. > :22:23.big lead. Nail-biting stuff. I was in tears, cheering, screaming,
:22:24. > :22:28.thinking - he is not going to do t he is not going to do it and then he
:22:29. > :22:35.does it. COMMENTATOR: Peaty has it on the very last stroke. For him to
:22:36. > :22:39.cope with the pressure in his first World Championships at the age of
:22:40. > :22:44.just 20, that's when he became a man for me. He is Britain's Golding
:22:45. > :22:49.swimming sensation, please welcome Adam Peaty. -- golden swimming
:22:50. > :23:16.sensation. So, second-year running on the list.
:23:17. > :23:21.Fantastic for you and for swimming Yes, I mean I'm great to be here in
:23:22. > :23:24.front of this amazing crowd. It is a massive opportunity really to put
:23:25. > :23:28.swimming on the map. And I'm not really good at this talking stuff,
:23:29. > :23:31.but I'm all right at swimming. You are better than all right at T
:23:32. > :23:35.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:23:36. > :23:40.And he is the first man in the world, ever, to swim the 100m
:23:41. > :23:45.breaststroke in under 58 seconds. APPLAUSE
:23:46. > :23:50.I know. How fast can you go? You know, no-one was expecting me to
:23:51. > :23:57.swim, the first man under 58 seconds. 57.9 I it. Everyone was
:23:58. > :24:01.tipping my greatest rival, the Olympic and World Champion. I was
:24:02. > :24:04.coming against the odds to break it, really. We are looking, hopefully
:24:05. > :24:13.this next year to enjoy the journey and give the best for my country,
:24:14. > :24:18.really. He is the man, Van Der Berg you will be taking on in Rio.
:24:19. > :24:24.Looking forward to it? I can't wait. I love a great race me. At the World
:24:25. > :24:29.Championships I was 5 m behind and I kept thinking - I have to catch this
:24:30. > :24:32.guy. He was a body length ahead. There was no way. There was
:24:33. > :24:36.something in my mind that said no way but something in my mind saying
:24:37. > :24:40.- no I have trained all those years, let's have this. This is what I did.
:24:41. > :24:44.And the exciting thing is it is not a one man band. British swimming is
:24:45. > :24:46.sensational. A lot of them here tonight.
:24:47. > :25:26.Many congratulations to all our global champions,
:25:27. > :25:31.And our next contender is a
:25:32. > :25:33.golden boy who certainly took it to the max in 2015.
:25:34. > :25:36.And that's because Max Whitlock created history by becoming
:25:37. > :25:38.Britain's first male world champion gymnast in a week
:25:39. > :25:54.COMMENTATOR: Look at this. Super stuff. Bronze medal. That is a first
:25:55. > :25:58.for Great Britain. The British boys could not have performed better.
:25:59. > :26:08.Great Britain takes silver in the Men's Team Final. Let's count them.
:26:09. > :26:12.There are the titles, all six of them. That is a record 10th world
:26:13. > :26:17.title. Boy, he pulled something out of the
:26:18. > :26:31.locker there. Itville a battle of the Britons
:26:32. > :26:32.here. Max Whitlock is the pommel horse world champion. -- it really
:26:33. > :26:36.is the battle of the Britons. He's perfect on the pommel
:26:37. > :27:31.and he's pretty good CHEERING AND
:27:32. > :27:37.APPLAUSE Wow, that was incredible. They
:27:38. > :27:44.absolutely loved it in here, Max. Grab your microphone. Don't try that
:27:45. > :27:49.at home, boys and girls. Max, is it just the piano, you can do that on?
:27:50. > :27:53.We have a full orchestra over there? Drum, maybe a double bass? It is a
:27:54. > :27:57.challenge on here. Maybe I'll give it a try. This is just a normal
:27:58. > :28:01.suit, by the way, ladies and gentlemen, no lycra in this. It is
:28:02. > :28:07.be a handy party trick. It is good. It works very W it is good I can do
:28:08. > :28:10.it. You can do it anywhere, all the time. All the other nominees are
:28:11. > :28:13.thinking - my party trick is not as good as that. You are World
:28:14. > :28:18.Champion, history maker, has that sunk in? It hasn't. You go to all
:28:19. > :28:21.the competitions and come back, you are straight back in the gym. It
:28:22. > :28:26.doesn't really sink in, you want to get back in and work hard and work
:28:27. > :28:31.for the next one. It was a long journey and it was amazing to finish
:28:32. > :28:36.it. That was my 20th routine out there at a World Championships. It
:28:37. > :28:39.was tough. Two silvers before that. The Men's Team Silver, historical
:28:40. > :28:48.silver, on the floor and then the gold. It is not how you start, it is
:28:49. > :28:51.how you finish? Exactly. Like you say, we made history a few times
:28:52. > :28:57.that week with the boys, it is great to see them. Overall it was a great
:28:58. > :29:01.week. Going back nine years, we were ranked 23 in the world. Now we are
:29:02. > :29:08.second. We are very proud. Very proud of you. You can tell
:29:09. > :29:13.gymnastics is more of an annerobic sport. Out of breath. Thank you for
:29:14. > :29:17.doing that. I know you go around gymnastics clubs all over, inspiring
:29:18. > :29:20.kids, so that the next generations of Max Whitlocks are coming through.
:29:21. > :29:27.It is a hugely popular sport at the moment. It is in a great place. Last
:29:28. > :29:32.week I came up to Belfast and visited as many schools and gym
:29:33. > :29:38.clubs as I could and got an amazing reception. It was brilliant to try
:29:39. > :29:44.and inspire the young kids. We went away from one of the classrooms, the
:29:45. > :29:51.teacher said how many people want to join gymnastics? A lot of hands were
:29:52. > :30:26.raised. It is a great feeling to us. Best of luck, Max Whitlock.
:30:27. > :30:41.And those starlets we all saw there make up the full list
:30:42. > :30:44.of contenders for tonight's first award - the Young Sports Personality
:30:45. > :30:48.The long list, top three and winner have been selected
:30:49. > :30:51.by a BBC panel, full details of which are on the BBC
:30:52. > :30:55.To present it, please welcome the fastest British woman
:30:56. > :30:58.in history, Dina Asher-Smith, and world super bantamweight
:30:59. > :31:26.Well, it is great to have you both here. Judges selected their top
:31:27. > :31:29.three. The judges selected their top three
:31:30. > :31:32.of gymnast Ellie Downie, para-swimmer Tully Kearney
:31:33. > :31:34.and jockey Tom Marquand. So Carl, could you announce
:31:35. > :31:37.the winner, please. The Young Sports Personality
:31:38. > :32:17.of the Year for 2015 is... Congratulations, Ellie. I presume
:32:18. > :32:23.you would like to say a few words? Yes, I would just like to say a
:32:24. > :32:27.massive thank you to everybody at British gymnastics, everybody at my
:32:28. > :32:32.home club, my family, my friends, everybody who has helped me along
:32:33. > :32:37.the way. And well done to the other nominees, especially one of the
:32:38. > :32:42.other gymnasts, Brinn Bevan. Thank you very much!
:32:43. > :32:43.Ladies and gentlemen, the BBC Young Personality
:32:44. > :33:09.Coming up, we get inspired as we announce the Helen Rollason award
:33:10. > :33:12.winner. We look back on an Ashes series to savour. And we celebrate a
:33:13. > :33:16.group of special champions. The Tour De France is
:33:17. > :33:18.the toughest physical challenge And our next contender had to endure
:33:19. > :33:24.more than brutal climbs - he went through hell and emerged
:33:25. > :33:27.triumphant to become the first British King of the Mountains
:33:28. > :33:29.and the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France
:33:30. > :33:39.for the second time. When it seems like the pressure of
:33:40. > :33:43.the world is on your shoulders, even the simplest of challenges can be
:33:44. > :33:48.tough to overcome. Fat cats trying to conquer one of the hardest places
:33:49. > :33:56.on this planet. Tough is a bit of an understatement. People have said it
:33:57. > :34:02.was one of the hardest Tour de Frances in years. For him to get
:34:03. > :34:06.through that - just incredible. This is not a ride around the park. This
:34:07. > :34:16.is a bike race. We are in the business of winning. I experienced
:34:17. > :34:25.it all last summer, got spat at and had a cup of urine thrown my way.
:34:26. > :34:32.This sport has got a reputation. I get that. But I still had a job to
:34:33. > :34:37.do. I had to lead my team to victory and I was not going to let anything
:34:38. > :34:41.get in my way. He takes it on the chin, gets up the next day and goes
:34:42. > :34:46.at it again. Not wide for a better team-mate. I think you saw the true
:34:47. > :34:51.champion. This guy is special. I sacrificed a lot for my sport. It is
:34:52. > :34:55.what I do. I am not looking for any sympathy for it. Having my wife at
:34:56. > :35:01.home with our first baby on the way was not easy, either. I knew she was
:35:02. > :35:07.there for me, though. That kept me going to the very end. And I did it.
:35:08. > :35:12.I got there. It was not easy. But it was all worth it. Because I got the
:35:13. > :35:16.yellow jersey back. Good evening everybody am sorry I could not be
:35:17. > :35:21.there to join you tonight. My wife and I are expecting a little boy any
:35:22. > :35:25.day now. So I definitely would not be in the good books if I had to
:35:26. > :35:32.come over to Belfast just at the minute. But thank you very much for
:35:33. > :35:38.the nomination. It is a real honour. To be nominated amongst such amazing
:35:39. > :35:49.talent which the country has to offer. Have a great evening. And the
:35:50. > :35:55.great news is that earlier in the week, Chris's wife gave birth to
:35:56. > :36:01.their first child. Isn't that beautiful?! A gorgeous little thing.
:36:02. > :36:02.Chris is at home in Monaco. We wish him the best of luck for tonight's
:36:03. > :36:09.main award. The bike and a baby boy
:36:10. > :36:11.were also the stories behind our next contender's
:36:12. > :36:13.remarkable come back in 2015, as we return to the Athletics
:36:14. > :36:15.World Championships. Because after only nine months
:36:16. > :36:17.training following the birth of her first child, Reggie,
:36:18. > :36:19.supermum Jessica Ennis-Hill proved again she's the best all-round woman
:36:20. > :36:29.athlete on the planet. Last July, Jessica Ennis-Hill gave
:36:30. > :36:33.birth to her first child, Reggie. Just three months later she was back
:36:34. > :36:41.in training, tentatively at first. 15 minutes on an exercise bike was
:36:42. > :36:45.all she could manage. Alone, late at night, as her baby slept. There were
:36:46. > :36:49.quite a few times during the winter when I honestly felt that it was
:36:50. > :36:54.just too much. I had not slept properly and I have got a baby and
:36:55. > :36:57.he needs me. Next year's Olympic Games were on the horizon. But
:36:58. > :37:02.first, the World Championships in Beijing. With so much new in her
:37:03. > :37:07.life, could she recapture the glory of old? I questioned whether I
:37:08. > :37:11.wanted to come back and be Olympic champion. The feeling I had was that
:37:12. > :37:17.I just wanted to make sure that I gave it a really good shot. I was
:37:18. > :37:21.away from my baby the two weeks but that I had achieved this amazing
:37:22. > :37:26.thing which I could tell him about. I always compare myself to the
:37:27. > :37:29.athlete that I was in 2012. So there were elements of frustration where I
:37:30. > :37:34.thought I could do a little bit better. But at the same time I felt
:37:35. > :37:43.really happy that I could produce those consistent performances. 5000
:37:44. > :37:45.miles away from her son, she was one event away from bringing home the
:37:46. > :37:53.gold medal. It was just such a special feeling. She would arrive
:37:54. > :38:01.with nothing to prove - but proved it anyway. Training continues. But
:38:02. > :38:06.for now it is back to the really important things in life.
:38:07. > :38:08.She's now a two-time world champion, please welcome
:38:09. > :38:42.Such a warm and wonderful reception in here, and we saw you talking
:38:43. > :38:45.about the comeback, the physical comeback. Were there ever times when
:38:46. > :38:50.it got a bit gruelling and tough and you thought, I wish I had chosen a
:38:51. > :38:54.more simple sport, maybe just hurdling?! Definitely. No sport is
:38:55. > :39:00.simple but I had so many moments where I thought, it would be nice
:39:01. > :39:03.just to do the hurdles. And I did have those discussions with my
:39:04. > :39:11.coach. But he was like, no, the heptathlon. Then there is the mental
:39:12. > :39:15.side of things. Did you ever worry about your competitive edge and
:39:16. > :39:19.whether that would still be there? In all honesty that was one thing
:39:20. > :39:23.that I knew I still had. Even when I found out I was pregnant I was still
:39:24. > :39:28.very much wanting to come back to my sport. I still have that competitive
:39:29. > :39:32.edge and drive to want to get to the top again. But I did evidently worry
:39:33. > :39:36.about physically how I would comeback this and how my body would
:39:37. > :39:39.cope with going through pregnancy and having a child and coming out
:39:40. > :39:43.the other side just so there were doubts in that respect but I never
:39:44. > :39:47.doubted that I wanted to be competitive. You were the poster
:39:48. > :39:53.girl in the build-up to 2012, and you delivered with that Olympic gold
:39:54. > :39:58.in London... Still a moment which sends the hairs on the back of the
:39:59. > :40:03.net, and appreciated here. Will it be less stressful heading towards
:40:04. > :40:13.retaining your title in Rio, do you think question it is always
:40:14. > :40:17.stressful. But 2012 was a unique opportunity. Just having that
:40:18. > :40:21.amazing experience. I am very much looking forward to Rio. A new
:40:22. > :40:27.journey. Just seeing what happens out there. Best of luck tonight,
:40:28. > :40:48.Jessica Ennis-Hill! New shoots, new blooms. Jordan
:40:49. > :40:54.Spieth, aged 21, blossoming. First, Masters champion. He would become US
:40:55. > :41:00.Open champion. Changing tides on the River Thames. Women's race before
:41:01. > :41:04.the men's. The river is Oxford blue. On higher ground, a champion's last
:41:05. > :41:12.lap. King of the Crucible? Stuart Bingham. Two Grand Nationals in two
:41:13. > :41:20.for Leighton Aspell. At the Derby, it was Frankie Dettori on Golden
:41:21. > :41:28.Horn. Jimmy Anderson and Broad England's Test wicket record. He had
:41:29. > :41:36.beaten Ian Botham. His team were no better than the West Indies, though.
:41:37. > :41:41.1-1. A hundred for the captain against New Zealand. But more
:41:42. > :41:46.collective frustration. The PRO12 went to Glasgow Warriors. Champions
:41:47. > :41:52.of Europe, Toulon. Floyd Mayweather dismissed Manny Pacquiao. On the
:41:53. > :41:59.French clay, Stan Wawrinka was the winner. Serena, Grand Slam number
:42:00. > :42:08.20. Bradley Wiggins took on the clock. An hour of agony. Then,
:42:09. > :42:13.history. The Premier League's best player was Eden Hazard of Chelsea.
:42:14. > :42:20.Best team as well. In the cup final, 4-0 to the arsenal. The Scottish
:42:21. > :42:25.Premiership finished with Celtic celebration. But the Scottish Cup
:42:26. > :42:30.went to Inverness Caledonian Thistle, sweethearts of the law. And
:42:31. > :42:31.the much beloved Barcelona are the champions of Europe. -- of the
:42:32. > :42:36.north. And today they have just won the
:42:37. > :42:46.Fifa club World Cup. Motorsport now, and here
:42:47. > :42:51.in Northern Ireland, The late, great Joey Dunlop this
:42:52. > :42:57.year was voted his country's number one sports star of all time,
:42:58. > :43:00.and it's great to see two of the legendary Dunlop family,
:43:01. > :43:02.Michael and William, It's also our pleasure to have two
:43:03. > :43:09.reigning world champions Danny Kent won the Moto3
:43:10. > :43:15.title, and Northern Ireland's Jonathan Rea
:43:16. > :43:17.won 14 races on his way Also dominant in 2015,
:43:18. > :43:25.this time on Formula 1 world champion
:43:26. > :43:39.for a third time. When I joined this team, I knew it
:43:40. > :43:43.was the right thing for me. It has been a dream to think of the success
:43:44. > :43:47.we have had. It is down to all these people, from the mechanics, to the
:43:48. > :43:54.janitor, to the guys in the paint shop. It all comes together and
:43:55. > :43:59.shines through in the car. DAVID COULTHARD: Man and machine in
:44:00. > :44:02.perfect harmony. He is a rock star racing driver. He is able to touch
:44:03. > :44:20.people. You have to be tough.
:44:21. > :44:26.Lewis Hamilton wins the Bahrain Grand Prix! Victory in Belgium! You
:44:27. > :44:29.have got to be strong. You have got to be hard.
:44:30. > :44:36.Lewis Hamilton wins the British Grand Prix! You cannot be nice out
:44:37. > :44:41.there. You cannot be - hey, here is some space! You say, I am taking it.
:44:42. > :44:48.This is turning into a magical season. Lewis Hamilton has won his
:44:49. > :44:56.third World Championship! Only gone and done it, mate! You just want to
:44:57. > :45:07.shout at the top of your lungs. It is just a lifelong dream.
:45:08. > :45:13.In the moment you are just grateful for all the people who have helped
:45:14. > :45:16.me achieve it. Lewis sadly can't be
:45:17. > :45:42.here in Belfast tonight. Absolutely. Firstly good evening
:45:43. > :45:47.everyone. It is great so see so many people there. Amazing year.
:45:48. > :45:51.Honestly. A real blessing. The team have done such an amazing job, as I
:45:52. > :45:54.said, a great experience to be part of this team. So many people working
:45:55. > :45:59.closely together to help elevate me to get that third Championship. How
:46:00. > :46:05.have you personally managed to maintain the amount of success you
:46:06. > :46:11.have done? Really just hard work, dedication. Staying focussed, as
:46:12. > :46:15.some of the greet athletes there tonight, staying focus on the one
:46:16. > :46:19.principle and goal and the belief and confidence in yourself. It is
:46:20. > :46:24.team work. In this sport, as I said there's 1,300 people in my team. It
:46:25. > :46:28.is not just me. I'm a very small kink in that large, large chain of a
:46:29. > :46:33.lot of people, all pulling together and really just being at our best at
:46:34. > :46:43.all times. Can you do it again next year, three in a row, four in all?
:46:44. > :46:48.Well, firstly, the reason - I'm sorry I'm not there -- I'm out in
:46:49. > :46:52.Colorado, starting training for next season. I have to lose three kilos
:46:53. > :46:58.for next season and absolutely my goal is to arrive - the last couple
:46:59. > :47:02.of races, in hindsight have been a blessing, they have given me
:47:03. > :47:07.motivation, I feel great in the car. I will be working with the engineers
:47:08. > :47:13.and communication to be the best I can be. I see you looking down. The
:47:14. > :47:18.dogs go everywhere with you. They must have more airmiles than Tim
:47:19. > :47:25.Peake. Oh, there they are. Yes, they are with me. They are a
:47:26. > :47:31.bit bored. Lewis Hamilton, thank you very much for joining us. Ladies and
:47:32. > :47:33.gentlemen, the Formula One champion, yet again, Lewis Hamilton.
:47:34. > :47:45.APPLAUSE Lewis is one of our contenders
:47:46. > :47:48.for tonight's main award, but remember, voting only

:47:51. > :47:52.from all 12 of them. Voting details are on the BBC Sport
:47:53. > :47:56.website and the red button. And you can also get in touch
:47:57. > :47:59.with us across all our And a reminder that

:48:05. > :48:07.with The Apprentice Final. Lord Sugar has the say
:48:08. > :48:10.on that, but it's your vote that counts for Sports
:48:11. > :48:11.Personality of the Year. Our second award is named
:48:12. > :48:15.in honour of Helen Rollason - our much-loved BBC
:48:16. > :48:17.colleague who died of cancer Helen's name lives on in her

:48:21. > :48:22.she showed during her illness, those of courage, achievement
:48:23. > :48:25.and the ability to inspire others To present it, I'm delighted
:48:26. > :48:32.to welcome a record breaking swimmer Please welcome double Olympic gold
:48:33. > :48:34.medallist Rebecca Adlington and One

:49:03. > :49:06.McIllroy. You love your sport. Are you enjoying this evening? Yes, very
:49:07. > :49:11.badly caddied for him, you should have said. I'm having a great night.
:49:12. > :49:20.It is good to look back on a fantastic year. I said, Rebecca said
:49:21. > :49:25.she might have trouble getting on with her heels, and wanted an
:49:26. > :49:29.escort. It is not that she is a mad One Direction fan. Niall stepped up.
:49:30. > :49:33.I'm sure everyone who sees our next film will be inspired by a cheeky
:49:34. > :49:38.lad from Yorkshire who personifies all the qualities this award is B
:49:39. > :49:40.thanks to snatched footage from a phone, his courage and character has
:49:41. > :49:50.Three, two, one, action. Bailey's been seen the whole world over.
:49:51. > :49:56.Three, two, one, action. Bailey's disability is cerebral palsy. It
:49:57. > :49:59.causes me legs not to work properly. Which makes walking and motor skills
:50:00. > :50:05.quite difficult. Here are the sausages. I don't see why I'm
:50:06. > :50:11.different. He just gets on with things. I did a triathlon. Well t
:50:12. > :50:14.went really, really good. Everything fell into place. I just felt - let's
:50:15. > :50:28.push it a bit harder. Athen I fell over and then I got
:50:29. > :50:33.back up again. It is nothing they have not seen before He falls over,
:50:34. > :50:36.he gets up, he carries on. His determination and guts just kept
:50:37. > :50:39.pushing him and pushing him to finish.
:50:40. > :50:47.I finished. The finish of the triathlon was filmed on a mobile
:50:48. > :50:56.phone. It went viral, all over the world. You are an inspiration.
:50:57. > :51:00.Brilliant. What a lovely lad. For us, we couldn't understand what all
:51:01. > :51:07.the fuss was about. From the last count we heard of. It was just over
:51:08. > :51:13.81 million hits he has had. Bailey Matthews. Other parents with
:51:14. > :51:14.children with disabilities, they have even said thank you, you have
:51:15. > :51:24.given us hope It is just what I do. What a truly
:51:25. > :51:25.extraordinary young man. This year's Helen Rollason Award
:51:26. > :51:35.goes to Bailey Matthews! CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
:51:36. > :52:47.APPLAUSE Now, what a reception, Bailey.
:52:48. > :52:57.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE I think you can stop
:52:58. > :53:03.cheering now. We've had a million, that's enough.
:53:04. > :53:10.You can stop cheering. I think he wants to speak. Do you want to say a
:53:11. > :53:17.few words, Bailey? What is it like being famous, for a start? Um...
:53:18. > :53:21.Cool. Cool. An amazing amount of people, over 80 million have seen
:53:22. > :53:25.your incredible triathlon. You have got them on your feet tonight. You
:53:26. > :53:32.love your sport, don't you? What do you love about sport? It's amazing.
:53:33. > :53:35.How does it make you feel, Bailey when you have crossed the line and
:53:36. > :53:44.you know you have done something incredible like that? It feels good.
:53:45. > :53:49.I mean, it's cool. It's cool. Bailey, by the way, normally, you
:53:50. > :53:52.can't shut him up. He is lost for words. Dad, I think this is the
:53:53. > :53:58.first time you have seen this, isn't it? I know your dad inspires you,
:53:59. > :54:07.and you wanted to compete the triathlon with him. What is next on
:54:08. > :54:10.the agenda? Five triathlons. Probably back-to-back as well.
:54:11. > :54:13.Well, I think we are going to be seeing and hearing a lot
:54:14. > :54:16.Ladies and gentlemen, Bailey Matthews!
:54:17. > :54:47.Coming up, we celebrate a lifetime of winners. Look back onnal world in
:54:48. > :54:53.union. And reveal the unsung hero. Seriously, how do you follow Bailey?
:54:54. > :54:55.That was fantastic. We are going to now, with rugby leave. -- Rugby
:54:56. > :54:58.League. He has been loyal to Leeds
:54:59. > :55:08.for his entire career of 18 years and has ended it in glory,
:55:09. > :55:11.taking the Rhinos to the treble of Challenge Cup, Super League
:55:12. > :56:09.and Grand Final wins. Scars received, and given. Cheers,
:56:10. > :56:13.Kev. COMMENTATOR: Head and shoulders above everyone else. Kevin Sinfield
:56:14. > :56:31.has kicked the winning goal. He is an example, a role model and a
:56:32. > :56:55.mentor. COMMENTATOR: Leeds win the treble.
:56:56. > :57:03.This is a team that goes down in history now.
:57:04. > :57:09.LAUGHTER He is reluctant Rugby League
:57:10. > :57:10.royalty, King Kev is here. With his team, please welcome, Kevin
:57:11. > :57:30.Sinfield. They are all here. They were all
:57:31. > :57:36.here in support of you, but you are the name on the list and the first
:57:37. > :57:41.time ever. Yes, I'm very, very proud. The first time Rugby League
:57:42. > :57:45.has ever had anybody represented. I'm here representing the guys on
:57:46. > :57:49.what we have achieved this year but definitely Rugby League. What a
:57:50. > :57:53.dream final season for you of Rugby League, with these guys, you
:57:54. > :57:57.couldn't have written that? I need thank these so much. I play such a
:57:58. > :58:02.small role and rely on these heavily. I think it was announced I
:58:03. > :58:06.was moving on at the end of March. As a sports player, performer, you
:58:07. > :58:11.have an idea how you would like to bow out you and that was winning the

:59:00. > :59:07.APPLAUSE There were lots of good
:59:08. > :59:10.days in Leeds this year. As well as home to the rampaging
:59:11. > :59:12.Rhinos, Headingley was the base for Yorkshire's second consecutive
:59:13. > :59:14.county cricket triumph. And it was one of their batsmen,
:59:15. > :59:17.Joe Root, who played a starring role for England
:59:18. > :59:19.as they beat the Aussies and regained the Ashes
:59:20. > :59:33.in a series so quick, It seems rather appropriate that I
:59:34. > :59:37.look out over the home of cricket. A game of long tradition, in which
:59:38. > :59:43.patience is a virtue. Something changed this summer. It all suddenly
:59:44. > :59:47.seemed a bit rushed. The First Test, and despite a few close shaves
:59:48. > :59:51.earlier on for the young Joe Root, the cherub of England's batting
:59:52. > :59:55.line-up, wasn't put off his stride? COMMENTATOR: They are all rooting
:59:56. > :00:00.for Joe. A great start, I thought. But this new Brand of Test cricket
:00:01. > :00:05.retained its ebbs and flows and the tables turned when they came here to
:00:06. > :00:10.Lord's. Australia have won magnificently.
:00:11. > :00:15.Well, it sent me into a bit of a spin. The series proceeded to
:00:16. > :00:21.Birmingham, where Jimmy joined the party. Out in 46 overs, the visitors
:00:22. > :00:26.could not recover on this occasion. Penultimate Test. Trent Bridge. One
:00:27. > :00:32.victory from regaining the urn and time was running out for Australia.
:00:33. > :00:42.Stuart Broad at his Steve dating best. Stuart Broad has taken 8-15.
:00:43. > :00:45.COMMENTATOR: Bowled him. COMMENTATOR: England has regained
:00:46. > :00:51.the Ashes. The fifth Test was a dead rubber. More of a footnote and
:00:52. > :00:57.Australian victory, an end to some notable careers. And as the ticker
:00:58. > :01:00.tape streamed down on the Oval a few miles away, it was time for me to
:01:01. > :01:06.finally catch my breath. And good luck to England
:01:07. > :01:11.for their forthcoming Test series So, from the hard yards of cricket,
:01:12. > :01:16.we return to the hard roads Lizzie Armitstead won a silver medal
:01:17. > :01:19.on the Mall This year, she went one better
:01:20. > :01:39.and fulfilled her lifelong dream Riding a bike is my profession. It
:01:40. > :01:43.is the way I make a living but it is also my hobby and something that I
:01:44. > :01:49.love. I think the best part of cycling is the fact that I am
:01:50. > :01:52.outside every single day. Riding in the most beautiful countryside. It
:01:53. > :02:00.is just the place where I feel most alive.
:02:01. > :02:03.Lizzie nodes that riding a bike will make you better. She knows that
:02:04. > :02:09.working hard will make you better than everybody else in the world. I
:02:10. > :02:12.did not dream about winning a World Championships in the beginning. It
:02:13. > :02:20.took a while for me to get good enough even to dream about it. It is

:02:30. > :02:37.of energy that you have in your body which you are just willing into the
:02:38. > :02:45.bike. I was watching it and screaming the last metres on TV.
:02:46. > :02:49.It is not often I will jump off my sofa for a bike race, but that was
:02:50. > :02:56.one of them. Gold for Lizzie Armitstead! She is
:02:57. > :03:01.the champion of the world! I drained of getting my hands in the air.
:03:02. > :03:05.Everyone does it. Went over the line and it was just like... I had just
:03:06. > :03:12.not thought about it. I could not believe it. I had done it.
:03:13. > :03:14.She's cycling's world road race champion.
:03:15. > :03:43.Lizzie, fabulous achievement - how much did those roads in Yorkshire
:03:44. > :03:46.help give you the strength to become world champion? I feel really
:03:47. > :03:51.privileged that I grew up in Yorkshire. It is a brutal place to
:03:52. > :03:56.train. The terrain is just relentless. Every training session
:03:57. > :04:00.you do is hard work. And it has made me into a champion. I am just really
:04:01. > :04:06.grateful to the local community, to my family everyone. It is a team
:04:07. > :04:11.effort. It has certainly been a magnificent effort, but it has not
:04:12. > :04:17.all been plain sailing this year. In the Women's Tour of Britain, you had
:04:18. > :04:21.a little bit of an accident. I mean, that is pretty nasty. You must have
:04:22. > :04:25.shown real Yorkshire grit to get through that and get back on the
:04:26. > :04:30.bike again? I suppose crashing is part of my sport. I risk it every

:04:36. > :04:43.I won the national championships one week later. So it looks worse than
:04:44. > :04:48.it was! Made of strong stuff! You of course won our first medal at London
:04:49. > :04:54.2012, and it was a silver medal. Rio next year, looking for gold? Yes, of
:04:55. > :04:56.course. The silver lining I suppose with the silver medal is that you

:05:36. > :05:42.Serena to the edge. Only to find herself forced backwards. The
:05:43. > :05:52.momentum of a champion. The Queen of Centre Court once more! For Murray,
:05:53. > :05:56.Federer put the final out of reach. But he could not overcome the

:07:57. > :08:21.What a reception, Rory. I think they like you hear! It is great that we
:08:22. > :08:28.are here in Northern Ireland and that you can be here with us. It
:08:29. > :08:31.must mean a lot? Yes, once I heard that sporty was going to be in
:08:32. > :08:37.Belfast, it was the first thing in my diary this year. It is absolutely
:08:38. > :08:41.fantastic. Eight rate event like this coming to Belfast, to see what
:08:42. > :08:46.Northern Ireland has to offer. It is wonderful to have you here with us.
:08:47. > :08:50.Bit of an injury this season, followed by a great finish to the
:08:51. > :08:54.season. You have got all of the Majors except the one. It would be
:08:55. > :08:59.lovely to have a nice Irish green jacket on your back? Hopefully, that
:09:00. > :09:03.is the goal. I have got three out of the four. I would have had a decent
:09:04. > :09:07.chance if it was not for some 21-year-old this year! But
:09:08. > :09:12.obviously, that is the big thing on the agenda, trying to win the
:09:13. > :09:14.Masters. I will put everything into that to try and do it. We wish you
:09:15. > :09:15.well. As we know, sport at the highest

:10:06. > :10:14.inspiration. 20 years at the top. Over 4000 winners. Unbelievable. An
:10:15. > :10:25.incredible man. COMMENTATOR: He has done it! What a
:10:26. > :10:31.hero! What a jockey! I often thought that I had more of
:10:32. > :10:35.an empathy with horses than I did with people. What makes top sports
:10:36. > :10:39.people is that they work harder than everyone else. And they want to

:11:50. > :11:54.and I. That makes me very proud. I have been lucky enough to have a lot
:11:55. > :12:09.of great days in racing. But the most defining moment was probably
:12:10. > :12:20.winning the Grand National. I was, Jesus, he is going to when it! It
:12:21. > :12:28.was a great achievement. Great for us. To be champion jockey 20 years
:12:29. > :12:31.in a row, it is unbelievable. I think to myself, did I leave
:12:32. > :12:35.anything out there, behind me? I don't think I could have worked any
:12:36. > :12:39.harder. I could have achieved more but the only way I could have
:12:40. > :12:45.achieved that is if I was lucky enough to have a go at it.
:12:46. > :12:47.We are thrilled to be joined by so many famous faces

:12:53. > :14:25.I would not be able to speak after that. But I know you will be able
:14:26. > :14:30.to. Go for it! Can I just say what an honour and a privilege it is to
:14:31. > :14:42.receive such a prestigious award, especially here in Belfast. Being
:14:43. > :14:47.from Northern Ireland, a place which has produced so many talented and
:14:48. > :14:51.successful sports people, none more so than the fella on my right, it
:14:52. > :14:55.makes tonight even more special. Racing is a wonderful sport. I was
:14:56. > :15:01.very lucky to live my life as a jockey through it. Two that I will
:15:02. > :15:12.be for ever grateful. There are so many people that I would like to
:15:13. > :15:15.thank. I would like to thank, I rode nearly 18,000 races and I would like
:15:16. > :15:17.to thank the horses that I was able to ride in those...
:15:18. > :15:28.Because without them this would not be possible. I would like to thank
:15:29. > :15:31.the stable lads and lasses who looked after them so well. And
:15:32. > :15:35.believe me, they looked after them better than you could believe.

:17:44. > :17:49.As a youngster I loved football. I wasn't as good at football as I am
:17:50. > :17:53.at running. To be great is to leave a lasting legacy. That changed my
:17:54. > :17:57.whole life. Two gold medals in front of my home crowd. Once in a
:17:58. > :18:02.lifetime, I guess. Perhaps greatness is taking those once in a lifetime
:18:03. > :18:06.moments, and making them look like they happen every day. I love

:18:29. > :18:33.some. COMMENTATOR: Mo Farah is the World Champion again. There would be
:18:34. > :18:39.no stopping this gold rush. In August, his history was made by a
:18:40. > :18:45.true legend of the sport. A long distance trim double. -- triple

:19:42. > :19:45.something that you know, I was good at and later on, I could be really
:19:46. > :19:49.good. What really drives me is being on the podium and putting the miles
:19:50. > :19:53.in. I guess just hard work and dedication. Mo, you are not really
:19:54. > :19:58.good, you are incredible. They haven't worked out how to beat you.
:19:59. > :20:03.They keep trying different tactics but you keep outfoxing them? Yes,
:20:04. > :20:07.definitely. You know, you learn along the way. I have been doing it
:20:08. > :20:12.since I was 12 years' old. I'm almost 33 now. Over the years you
:20:13. > :20:16.have been learning, race after race and it is confidence as well. And
:20:17. > :20:21.for me, since London 2012, everything has changed and everybody

:28:58. > :29:16.Andy, you made the Davis Cup an absolute priority this year, even at

:29:22. > :29:25.Well, I mean, all of the guys that are standing behind me, Leon, who is

:30:18. > :30:20.in Belgium. Packed every day. Yes, I found a level of performance that I
:30:21. > :30:24.wasn't able to find in the other tournaments during the year and I
:30:25. > :30:28.don't know exactly why that is. But I need to try to work it out for

:34:22. > :34:24.and Ireland the champions Well, the World Cup did -
:34:25. > :34:42.and it didn't disappoint. There would be giants in this
:34:43. > :34:45.land of hope and glory. Who could ever be
:34:46. > :35:07.thinking of failure? The eighth Rugby World Cup up and
:35:08. > :35:20.running. Everyone's dreams, as bright as the skies. Was it a bit
:35:21. > :35:26.predictable? It was not. Double the guard, let no-one sleep! But no-one
:35:27. > :35:39.even blink! Now we come to the sharp end, the tip of the cruel lance,
:35:40. > :35:41.where in the heat and the confusion, reason was lacking. Resolve was
:35:42. > :35:46.tested. There would be heroes,

:36:40. > :36:49.England. England, inwardly turning dark. There would be giants. And how
:36:50. > :36:51.they thundered. What a mark they left
:36:52. > :36:56.on the land of hope and glory. And how we still feel
:36:57. > :37:12.their presence among us. Thank you so much to the brilliant

:37:18. > :37:19.Ladies and gentlemen, we are indeed in the company
:37:20. > :37:30.Please welcome New Zealand legend Dan Carter!
:37:31. > :38:05.Dan, it is magical to have you with us tonight. Tarver joining us. That
:38:06. > :38:09.World Cup was so special, but for you, how much was it on your mind
:38:10. > :38:16.what had happened to you personally back in 2011, and you did not make
:38:17. > :38:23.it to that final through injury? Yes, it was a pretty to moment in my
:38:24. > :38:28.career. Just before the play-offs I have a serious injury which ruled me
:38:29. > :38:32.out. I was 29 then and I thought it was probably the end of my
:38:33. > :38:37.international career. But I decided to go for it for another four years
:38:38. > :38:45.and give 2015, let that be my swansong. In 2013-14, I think I
:38:46. > :38:51.strung together five or six games. I just had so many injuries. I was on
:38:52. > :38:57.the borderline of retiring. So to go on the World Cup here in London, it
:38:58. > :39:05.was fantastic. Just to play alongside my team-mates, they pretty
:39:06. > :39:08.much just gave me an easy ride. You were the player of the tournament so
:39:09. > :39:14.it must have felt like redemption for you. Sadly the world of rugby
:39:15. > :39:15.and the world of sport lost a global icon in Jonah Lomu after the World
:39:16. > :39:28.Cup. He was the Overseas Sports
:39:29. > :39:35.Personality Of The Year 20 years ago. Can you put into words what he
:39:36. > :39:39.did for the sport? He is an absolute legend of the sport. It was a major
:39:40. > :39:44.shock to all of us. He changed the sport for ever. He is the sole
:39:45. > :39:49.reason that rugby became professional. 20 years ago, when he
:39:50. > :39:54.won this award. It was far too early. I was lucky enough to get to
:39:55. > :40:04.know him and he is just such a caring, thoughtful guy. He is sorely
:40:05. > :40:09.missed by everyone. This was an online poll and you have beaten many
:40:10. > :40:13.top sports people. So, huge congratulations. Ladies and
:40:14. > :40:16.gentlemen, Dan Carter! Now Dan, if I can ask
:40:17. > :40:20.you to stick around as we've got a little job for you later
:40:21. > :40:23.and a job for you at home now as we give you a reminder
:40:24. > :41:16.of the all important numbers The year flows around to harvest
:41:17. > :41:20.season. Time to reap what you row. As the nights drew in, Chelsea added
:41:21. > :41:27.the Super League for a domestic bubble. David Weir and Shelly Woods
:41:28. > :41:38.were winners at the Great North Run. In New York, Djokovic's 10th Grand
:41:39. > :41:45.Slam. Roberta Vinci played Flavia Pennetta. In the Solheim Cup, a
:41:46. > :41:51.comeback. America, fuelled by anger. The Walker Cup went to Britain and
:41:52. > :41:56.Ireland. Over the channel, in the Arc de Triomphe, more glory for
:41:57. > :42:04.Freddie Victoria on Golden Horn. By the Irish sea, in Gaelic football, a
:42:05. > :42:08.glorious Dublin day, Kilkenny triumphant in the hurling. In the
:42:09. > :42:22.Moto GP, Jorge Lorenzo ultimately winning. In speedway, Tye was world
:42:23. > :42:27.champion again. England lost the series against Pakistan. In the
:42:28. > :42:39.league of riches, a very English gem was uncovered. Legends can be made
:42:40. > :42:43.much faster in UFC. 13 seconds for Conor McGregor to become Ireland's's
:42:44. > :42:46.newest world champion. But champions can fall. Chelsea's declined toppled

:42:55. > :42:58.all in the blink of an eye. Time in the end ran out
:42:59. > :43:00.for Jose at Chelsea. Time is also running out in order
:43:01. > :43:03.for you to vote for your Sports There's about 15 minutes
:43:04. > :43:06.left, so don't delay. Our next award tonight

:43:16. > :43:50.tennis champion Jordanne Many congratulations, so what is
:43:51. > :43:55.your priority for 2016? It is pretty simple, I want to be the Wimbledon
:43:56. > :44:01.champion. We wish you well in that. Eddie, meanwhile, inspiring people
:44:02. > :44:07.to get involved in sport and helping make it happen? Absolutely. I am the
:44:08. > :44:20.patron of a sport volunteering charity, and we are working with BBC
:44:21. > :44:27.Get Inspired. But We Want To Get Trending a great big thank you. What
:44:28. > :44:34.does that say? We tried this last year. All you have to do is,
:44:35. > :44:40.everyone at home and everyone in the arena tonight, just thank a sporting
:44:41. > :44:45.volunteer that they know, and if we do this, we can get it trending.
:44:46. > :44:49.Last year we got it trending around the world. We would like to try to
:44:50. > :44:56.get it across the universe. So all you have got to do is to do it right
:44:57. > :44:57.now, get your phones out and do hashtag big thank you, and we will
:44:58. > :45:00.make this work. If you want to find out how
:45:01. > :45:03.to take part in a range of sporting activities,
:45:04. > :45:05.go to the Get Inspired section But you can't do it without help,
:45:06. > :45:10.and over the past weeks, Unsung Heroes from the BBC's
:45:11. > :45:13.15 nations and regions They are all here
:45:14. > :45:17.tonight and we want to say thank you to all
:45:18. > :45:20.of you and to the thousands more watching at home who give
:45:21. > :45:23.their time and their energy You are the beating heart that make
:45:24. > :45:29.sport possible for so many people. With that in mind, here is the story
:45:30. > :45:44.of tonight's winner. Damian Lindsay is 44 and from West
:45:45. > :45:56.Belfast. Five years ago, rioting and anti-social behaviour plagued the
:45:57. > :46:02.place he called home. His answer was to start St James' Park text lifts.
:46:03. > :46:10.When masked men fired shots during training, others left, but reap what
:46:11. > :46:20.you row stayed. Many were involved in drugs and serious crime, but with
:46:21. > :46:24.Daien's help, they persevered. If it was not for him, I would be still
:46:25. > :46:30.out doing crime and stuff. Now I have a beautiful child and a
:46:31. > :46:35.girlfriend, a family. Damien is so much more than a football coach. He
:46:36. > :46:41.is mentor, an inspiration and most importantly, a friend. It is a
:46:42. > :46:43.brilliant story. Let's now meet the 2015 Get Inspired Unsung Hero,
:46:44. > :47:26.Damien Lindsay! Many, many congratulations. I'm sure
:47:27. > :47:33.would like to say a few words? Folks, thank you very much. This
:47:34. > :47:36.award could have gone to any of the regional winners, thousands of
:47:37. > :47:46.people across Belfast and dozens of people in my own community at St
:47:47. > :48:03.James's. Thank you very much. This year's Unsung Hero, Damien Lindsay!
:48:04. > :48:13.Still to come, we tell a story of euro glory. We reveal the top coach
:48:14. > :48:17.and team from 2015. And finally, just before nine o'clock, we will
:48:18. > :49:28.announce the Sports Personality of the Year.
:49:29. > :49:32.And what matters in football next year is Euro 2016.
:49:33. > :49:35.Played across France, there is to be a strong UK and Irish
:49:36. > :49:37.contingent, and to talk us through the qualification story
:49:38. > :49:40.is a Northern Irishman who is more than qualified
:49:41. > :49:53.Who are we to expect things of others? But we do. In love, in life,
:49:54. > :49:58.in football. You know, the three most important things. So when
:49:59. > :50:03.England win their Euros qualifying group, win every game, every game,
:50:04. > :50:10.is it enough? Records tumbling, one that hadn't been touched for 40-odd
:50:11. > :50:14.years. Bobby Charlton's England goal-scoring record has gone. Fair
:50:15. > :50:19.play, Wayne. Another major tournament appearance but only
:50:20. > :50:23.what's expected. Scotland and the Republic's qualification was more
:50:24. > :50:27.about hope than expectation. In the same group, with the world Champions
:50:28. > :50:31.and Poland, they weren't both going to make it, were they? COMMENTATOR:
:50:32. > :50:36.Scottish hearts are broken But could one? The Republic of Ireland are
:50:37. > :50:41.going to the European Championship finals. As for Wales. Well, what
:50:42. > :50:46.could they expect? They've go the a good team, one genuine superstar. --
:50:47. > :50:51.they've got. But we have been here before. The fact is, Wales haven't
:50:52. > :50:55.been to a tournament in 50-odd years. Giggsy wasn't even a glint in
:50:56. > :50:59.his mummy's eye. But something changed this year. Some good
:51:00. > :51:03.results. Belief grows. Suddenly expectations are being exceeded.
:51:04. > :51:08.COMMENTATOR: Wales will be in France next summer.
:51:09. > :51:10.Talking about going beyond expectation - what about my boys?
:51:11. > :51:18.What was expected of Northern Ireland? Nothing. Hehaw. No star
:51:19. > :51:25.players, no great history. A side from probably the best player anyone
:51:26. > :51:33.has ever seen. But what we've got is heart, spirit, fight. And when
:51:34. > :51:38.Windsor Park is rockin, it sounds like all of Belfast, Bangor,
:51:39. > :51:42.Ballymena and everywhere in between is screaming... Green army, green
:51:43. > :51:46.army. COMMENTATOR: They are there, they have done it. When you don't
:51:47. > :51:51.expect much and you get a lot, a whole lot more than you bargained
:51:52. > :51:57.for. It feels fantastic. Bloody fantastic. It leaves you wanting
:51:58. > :51:57.more. Euro 2016. Bring it on! CHEERING AND
:51:58. > :52:09.APPLAUSE Thanks to Jimmy for that. You should
:52:10. > :52:19.have heard the cheer in here when Northern Ireland were mentioned. One
:52:20. > :52:31.more time, Northern Ireland. Something like that.
:52:32. > :52:33.It's also great to have the O'Neills brains trust
:52:34. > :52:36.Michael of Northern Ireland and Martin of the Republic
:52:37. > :52:39.And they will be among the runners and riders I'm
:52:40. > :52:42.sure for our next award, which is for Coach of the Year.
:52:43. > :52:44.To present it, please welcome former Olympic gold medallist
:52:45. > :53:07.Denise Lewis and 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell!
:53:08. > :53:10.Great to see you both, here's a look at a long list of some
:53:11. > :53:43.Graeme can you do the honours for us, please?
:53:44. > :53:56.We are not Brazil, we are Northern Ireland, Michael O'Neil.
:53:57. > :54:29.CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.
:54:30. > :54:32.Congratulations Michael, a fantastic achievement what you have done this
:54:33. > :54:34.season. Most certainly the biggest cheer of the night. I would love you
:54:35. > :54:44.to say a few words, please. APPLAUSE Thank you, thank you.
:54:45. > :55:03.APPLAUSE CONTINUES force I'll try and say something sensible,
:55:04. > :55:09.hopefully. It is amazing to be here tonight, as Rory touched upon t as
:55:10. > :55:14.AP touched on it, to bring an event like this to Belfast is something
:55:15. > :55:18.special. To be here on this stage as the manager of my country and to be
:55:19. > :55:21.going to France is very special for me as well, obviously as well.
:55:22. > :55:33.APPLAUSE First of all I would like to
:55:34. > :55:38.congratulate all the other nominees. There are fantastic coaches in the
:55:39. > :55:41.room, across all the sports. It is fairly evident when you see the
:55:42. > :55:45.achievements of everyone who is nominated so it is very humbling,
:55:46. > :55:49.obviously, to get the award here tonight. There are many people I
:55:50. > :55:56.should thank. Hopefully I don't forget anyone, so first of all, I'd
:55:57. > :55:59.like to thank - I think the Association, because two years ago,
:56:00. > :56:03.we weren't in a great place. It would have been easier for me to
:56:04. > :56:07.walk away and the Association to go for someone else. We stuck together
:56:08. > :56:11.and ultimately we are where we are today and we have had success out of
:56:12. > :56:22.that. I think I should recognise that. I've got a fantastic backroom
:56:23. > :56:26.staff, Jimmy Nicholls here tonight with me. Steven Robinson and Mike
:56:27. > :56:32.Taylor who aren't and Jupp who has been with me and the whole medical
:56:33. > :56:36.team. Everything we have. We don't have the biggest backroom staff or
:56:37. > :56:40.biggest budget but we have a great staff who work around the clock to
:56:41. > :56:45.make sure we have a chance of success and they have played every
:56:46. > :56:49.big a part in it as I have I must also thank my wife who is with me
:56:50. > :56:59.here tonight. She doesn't get to many events. She looks after my two
:57:00. > :57:03.amazing daughters Olivia and Erin and Edinburgh when I'm in exotic
:57:04. > :57:09.places like Fleetwood watching football on a Tuesday night. I would
:57:10. > :57:14.like to thank her for her support over the past campaign and over the
:57:15. > :57:18.past years. Also, it is an amazing reception you
:57:19. > :57:21.have given me, very, very humbling indeed. One thing I will say about
:57:22. > :57:30.the people of Northern Ireland is that they do support their team.
:57:31. > :57:35.APPLAUSE It is easy to support your team when
:57:36. > :57:40.it is good. It is not so easy when it is not so good. You have stuck by
:57:41. > :57:45.the team, when things were not so good, you never turned on the team
:57:46. > :57:50.and me. And it is testament to not only the people in this room but
:57:51. > :57:57.Northern Ireland as a whole, as a community and finally, just to
:57:58. > :58:02.finish off, I'd like to - AP couldn't put it any better. He would
:58:03. > :58:05.like to thank his horses. I would like to thank my players. You are
:58:06. > :58:08.not a coach at all without your players. We may not have the
:58:09. > :58:13.greatest players in the world but we have great players to work with and
:58:14. > :58:16.they have represent Northern Ireland. They come from both sided
:58:17. > :58:25.of the community. They are proud to play for Northern Ireland.
:58:26. > :58:27.APPLAUSE Ladies and gentlemen, 2015 Coach of
:58:28. > :58:54.the Year. Michael O'Neill. Incredible energy and you still have
:58:55. > :58:59.a couple of minutes to vote. We will also announce the team of the year
:59:00. > :59:24.if you have just joined us on BBC One. We have had lots to celebrate.
:59:25. > :59:29.Everseas Sports Personality of the Year Dan Carter.
:59:30. > :59:37.Bailey Matthews. Thank you.
:59:38. > :59:42.Ellie Downie. The magnificent AP McCoy.
:59:43. > :59:47.Yes, what a night it's been. The main moment is still to come, around
:59:48. > :59:52.9.00pm. It is the team of the year award now. One of two awards voted
:59:53. > :59:56.for by a BBC panel who also chose the contender's list for tonight's
:59:57. > :00:02.main award. Full details are on the BBC sports website. To present t
:00:03. > :00:23.please welcome, Dame Mary Peters and Martin O'Neil.
:00:24. > :00:33.It's has been a great year and here's
:00:34. > :00:59.some of the teams who have stood out.
:01:00. > :01:08.Dame Mary, you have the envelope, please reveal who the winner is. The
:01:09. > :01:17.2015 Team of the Year is... The Great Britain Davis Cup team.
:01:18. > :01:57.Captain Leon Smith, would you like to say a few words? Thank you very
:01:58. > :02:02.much. I have got about 60 seconds to make a fool of myself, which is
:02:03. > :02:06.probably enough. That is what these guys standing behind me want to
:02:07. > :02:11.happen! It is hugely humbling to receive this award. It is obviously
:02:12. > :02:15.very prestigious. It has been 79 years since we managed to win the
:02:16. > :02:24.Davis cup, so let's hope it does not take another 79. A big thanks to the
:02:25. > :02:29.BBC, who have covered all our ties this year, and of course to the
:02:30. > :02:33.panel who voted for us tonight. Thank you to the RTA, their
:02:34. > :02:37.volunteers, the media, and of course our wonderful fans, including the
:02:38. > :02:41.Barmy Army, who have become famous. There really have stood by us and
:02:42. > :02:46.travelled everywhere for our team. I think like most coaches out here
:02:47. > :02:53.tonight, you will realise that whilst the players and certainly
:02:54. > :02:56.myself, we get a lot of the focus, but there are many, many unsung
:02:57. > :03:01.heroes who have played a big part in as reaching this. For sure, all of
:03:02. > :03:04.these people up on stage that you see here, the support staff are also
:03:05. > :03:12.absolutely fantastic. We also have to thank our family and partners,
:03:13. > :03:16.because they sacrifice an awful lot to allow us to get on the road and
:03:17. > :03:23.travel for months on end. This is for them as much as it is for us.
:03:24. > :03:28.And I hope that what we have achieved here for tennis, which is
:03:29. > :03:32.of course the sport we love, is that we get a really lasting, meaningful
:03:33. > :03:35.legacy from this. We will make sure that everything we do moving forward
:03:36. > :03:39.into the next year's is as much about off the court is on the court
:03:40. > :03:41.to get as many kids into this great sport as we can. Thank you very much
:03:42. > :03:44.everybody. Congratulations to our
:03:45. > :03:49.Team of the Year! But who will be the 2015
:03:50. > :03:58.Sports Personality of the Year? We'll find out in a few minutes'
:03:59. > :04:02.time, as now I can announce that Please do not call as your vote
:04:03. > :04:07.will not count but you may The website also won't
:04:08. > :04:10.allow any more votes The main event then still to come,
:04:11. > :04:26.but Christmas is also about reflection.
:04:27. > :04:32.Yesterday we lost one of football's great pioneers, the one and only
:04:33. > :04:37.Jimmy Hill. Good evening and welcome to Match Of
:04:38. > :04:44.The Day on the last Saturday before the league season. I have never seen
:04:45. > :04:49.a side play with such delightful enthusiasm for the game. Good
:04:50. > :04:56.afternoon to you and welcome to Match Of The Day live from Old
:04:57. > :05:08.Trafford. Let's all sing together... 1% advantage in this game gives you
:05:09. > :05:11.a result. Thank you, Jim. I cannot think of a single person who has
:05:12. > :05:14.given as much to their sport. Football will be for ever grateful
:05:15. > :05:20.to need Jimmy Hill. It is time now to remember some of our other
:05:21. > :05:24.friends who we have said goodbye to this year.
:05:25. > :05:28.And in doing so we're delighted to be
:05:29. > :05:30.joined by Lizzie Jones, who you may remember sang
:05:31. > :05:33.at the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final in August as a tribute
:05:34. > :05:35.to her husband Danny, who died while playing
:05:36. > :05:38.Since Danny's death, as well as bringing up her
:05:39. > :05:41.one-year-old twins, Lizzie has been raising awareness for heart
:05:42. > :05:43.screening among young sportsmen and women.
:05:44. > :05:46.We are honoured she's here to sing for us tonight as part
:05:47. > :05:50.of our tribute to our beloved departed
:05:51. > :06:12.# From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
:06:13. > :06:56.# Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
:06:57. > :07:34.Morning, everyone. It has gone straight into the confectionery
:07:35. > :07:36.stall and out again. Red Rum wins the national!
:07:37. > :09:43.A wonderful, touching moment and thanks also to Northern Ireland
:09:44. > :09:47.choir Codetta and the Ulster Orchestra, conducted by David
:09:48. > :09:59.And so we now move on to the final award of the night, as one of these

:12:32. > :13:14.Barry - can you please now reveal who the BBC Sports Personality

:13:26. > :14:10.Andy Murray! Many congratulations, I am sure you
:14:11. > :14:11.would like to say a few words, Andy. Yes.
:14:12. > :14:26.Thank you very much. I genuinely did not prepare anything. I did not
:14:27. > :14:32.expect this. A friend actually sent me a message the other day with an
:14:33. > :14:40.an from a newspaper which said that Andy Murray is duller than a weekend
:14:41. > :14:54.in Worthing. Which I thought was a bit harsh - to Worthing.
:14:55. > :15:01.Yes, it is very humbling to be up here in front of so many great

:15:11. > :15:14.tonight. I would really like to thank all of my team-mates, all of
:15:15. > :15:19.the staff over there. They were absolutely incredible. This has been
:15:20. > :15:24.a five year journey. We were down really at the bottom level of tennis
:15:25. > :15:25.and now, we are ranked number one in the world. I never thought that
:15:26. > :15:40.would be possible. I would also like to thank my
:15:41. > :15:45.family. Some of them are here, not all of them. My wife is at home. She
:15:46. > :15:50.is expecting a baby in a few weeks so is unable to travel. But I have
:15:51. > :15:53.got that to look forward to as well. I would like to thank everyone who
