0:02:47 > 0:02:48like, "Dammit, I've swum too fast!"
0:02:48 > 0:02:51My first kind of ever Olympic race, to be a world record was...
0:02:51 > 0:02:53You can't even put anything on that, really.
0:02:53 > 0:02:54It's like nothing else.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56COMMENTATOR: Now here he is - Great Britain's Adam Peaty.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59He needs this to join the most exclusive club in the world.
0:02:59 > 0:03:04When you build up to an Olympic final, you are going to be nervous,
0:03:04 > 0:03:06you are going to be focused, but it's how well,
0:03:06 > 0:03:09what's going on in here, you kind of cope with.
0:03:09 > 0:03:10I get nervous.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12I don't watch him go off the block.
0:03:12 > 0:03:14Once he's off, I'm as excited as anybody else,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29COMMENTATOR: Absolutely phenomenal
0:03:29 > 0:03:31from Great Britain's Adam Peaty.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34There's oceans of clear blue water between Adam Peaty
0:03:34 > 0:03:35and the rest of the world.
0:03:35 > 0:03:36Go on!
0:03:36 > 0:03:37You can do it!
0:03:37 > 0:03:39Absolutely fantastic.
0:03:39 > 0:03:42Adam Peaty takes Olympic gold for Great Britain.
0:03:42 > 0:03:43CHEERING Oh, he's done it!
0:03:43 > 0:03:45A wonderful world record.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47The time - oh, my goodness me!
0:03:47 > 0:03:4857.13!
0:03:48 > 0:03:52Again, he's obliterated the world record.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55Olympic champion, gold medal, Adam Peaty of Great Britain.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58The World Champion and Olympic Champion and European Champion
0:03:58 > 0:04:02and the Commonwealth Champion.
0:04:02 > 0:04:06He's got all four!
0:04:06 > 0:04:09It's been 28 years we've been waiting for it, and Adam Peaty,
0:04:09 > 0:04:15he's won the race by 1.5 seconds.
0:04:15 > 0:04:21There's kind of nothing like singing the national anthem anyway,
0:04:21 > 0:04:24but to do it for the first time in that Games is kind of...
0:04:24 > 0:04:27It's just absolutely huge to me, really.
0:04:27 > 0:04:28BRITISH NATIONAL ANTHEM ENDS, CHEERING.
0:04:28 > 0:04:29That was more
0:04:29 > 0:04:30of an emotional moment for me.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32You know, that's my son.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34You know, he's achieved Olympic gold.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37I wished I could've been there to see him when he got his gold.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40I said, "Yes, that's my grandson!"
0:04:40 > 0:04:42Normally, we halve his medals.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45Either my mum will have one and I'll have one.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47But, no, these haven't left his side.
0:04:47 > 0:04:49I obviously had that support behind me.
0:04:49 > 0:04:53Dad's never flown before, Mum's never flown before,
0:04:53 > 0:04:56so they were both on the plane, like, you know, didn't even know
0:04:56 > 0:04:57what they were doing.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00My dad didn't want to stand up the whole flight.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02So that kind of support is amazing to have, especially
0:05:02 > 0:05:05at my first Olympic Games.
0:05:05 > 0:05:06And, obviously, they'll
0:05:06 > 0:05:09treasure that for the rest of their lives, hopefully.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12Let's be honest, did we ever really think that hockey could seize
0:05:12 > 0:05:17the nation and not let go?
0:05:17 > 0:05:22Kate Richardson-Walsh's team did exactly that.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25When I look back over this year, it just seems a bit surreal,
0:05:25 > 0:05:27actually, and it seems like it happened to somebody else,
0:05:27 > 0:05:30like I'm watching a movie, and it literally was like just
0:05:30 > 0:05:38the best ending, um, to my hockey career.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40When everyone says the name Kate Richardson-Walsh,
0:05:40 > 0:05:44you just think, legend.
0:05:44 > 0:05:48She's someone who makes a connection with everybody that she meets.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50She has been the most magical leader in our team
0:05:50 > 0:05:51for such a number of years.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54I find it difficult to describe her in one word,
0:05:54 > 0:05:58because she deserves more than one word.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00When she's on the pitch, you know that she is
0:06:00 > 0:06:02going to give everything.
0:06:02 > 0:06:06She's passionate about what she does, will put her head
0:06:06 > 0:06:09where sometimes it shouldn't go, as she found out to great cost
0:06:09 > 0:06:10in the London Olympics.
0:06:10 > 0:06:12She's seen it all - not qualifying for Athens,
0:06:12 > 0:06:16to winning gold in Rio 12 years later.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18COMMENTATOR: Here we go, a gold medal on the line...
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Going into that final, and throughout that final,
0:06:20 > 0:06:21we were in the moment.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24It went up and down.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26You know, we scored first...
0:06:26 > 0:06:27COMMENTATOR: Great Britain are in front.
0:06:27 > 0:06:28Lily Owsley strikes!
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Then they went goals up.
0:06:30 > 0:06:33It's a goal for the Netherlands, 2-1 in front.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35You know, it was so up and down.
0:06:35 > 0:06:39Crista Cullen brings Great Britain level!
0:06:39 > 0:06:42And it's so easy to...to think, you know, when you go a goal up,
0:06:42 > 0:06:44"Oh, my God, we're going to win!"
0:06:44 > 0:06:47And the Dutch lead by three goals to two.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49They've scored!
0:06:49 > 0:06:52Great Britain are level!
0:06:52 > 0:06:55Staying in the moment was so key, right up until the end
0:06:55 > 0:06:57and into the penalties as well.
0:06:57 > 0:06:593-3 at the end of normal time.
0:06:59 > 0:07:00Penalties to follow.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03Kate was talking to us and telling us, you know,
0:07:03 > 0:07:05"Keep believing, stay together, stay tight.
0:07:05 > 0:07:10"Whatever happens in the shoot-out, we stick together," and we truly
0:07:10 > 0:07:12believed that we're going to come out and win.
0:07:12 > 0:07:13That's the golden goal!
0:07:13 > 0:07:17Great Britain have won the Olympic gold medal!
0:07:17 > 0:07:22The hockey history makers!
0:07:22 > 0:07:25Every emotion that I felt over the last 17 years just
0:07:25 > 0:07:28came out in a rush and, to be honest, I still don't think
0:07:28 > 0:07:31it's sunk in, and I'm not sure it ever will.
0:07:31 > 0:07:33It culminated into that amazing, euphoric moment of her standing
0:07:33 > 0:07:38on the podium, kissing her medal that everybody saw.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40People that would never normally tune in to hockey, you know,
0:07:40 > 0:07:45switched on and supported us.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47She's someone that's known outside of our sport now,
0:07:47 > 0:07:50and I'd like to think that people enjoyed watching us in Rio,
0:07:50 > 0:07:53not just for the performance, but how we were as a team,
0:07:53 > 0:07:57and I think Kate's very much been integral to that sense of team.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00She's inspired me to be a better athlete every day,
0:08:00 > 0:08:03and now I won't have her here to be able to be like, "That's
0:08:03 > 0:08:07what I want to be like when I get older," cos now I am older,
0:08:07 > 0:08:09so I've got to be that person myself, so, yeah,
0:08:09 > 0:08:11we're all going to miss her.
0:08:11 > 0:08:14'When I look back at my career now, I think I'm emotional, still.
0:08:14 > 0:08:18'It's given me impetus and purpose and I will forever be grateful.'
0:08:18 > 0:08:24To leave that behind is really emotional, yeah.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30More tears in the world of triathlon, as the Brownlee
0:08:30 > 0:08:33brothers made us all a little more emotional, led by elder
0:08:33 > 0:08:39brother Alistair.
0:08:39 > 0:08:42His pedigree now is there for everybody to see.
0:08:42 > 0:08:45His best quality is incredible determination.
0:08:45 > 0:08:49Everything he does, he believes in everything he does 100%.
0:08:49 > 0:08:51Even if he wasn't a professional sportsperson, if he did something
0:08:51 > 0:08:54else, he'd still spend almost every day cycling around the lanes of
0:08:54 > 0:09:00Yorkshire and running on the moors.
0:09:00 > 0:09:02This year has been my best year, in terms of personal
0:09:02 > 0:09:03achievement for me.
0:09:03 > 0:09:06Obviously, London was very, very special, but I think Rio,
0:09:06 > 0:09:09to me, felt very different and then, it being a bit more of a personal
0:09:09 > 0:09:11struggle to get there, coping with my injuries and pulling
0:09:11 > 0:09:18it off on the day.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20It just made the level of the achievement
0:09:20 > 0:09:21for me really special.
0:09:21 > 0:09:23COMMENTATOR: Alistair Brownlee is cruising through the final stages
0:09:23 > 0:09:25of this Olympic triathlon.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28This is the point where I kind of allow myself to think,
0:09:28 > 0:09:31"Yeah, I've won this now, which is nice," and I'm having
0:09:31 > 0:09:33a nice little jog here, enjoying it.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36It will be a glorious golden double for Alistair Brownlee -
0:09:36 > 0:09:40the Olympic triathlon champion for the second time!
0:09:40 > 0:09:44And Jonny finishes just a handful of seconds behind.
0:09:44 > 0:09:48I think I say, "We've done it, well done."
0:09:48 > 0:09:50Well, that's what we think we said.
0:09:50 > 0:09:52We're not entirely sure, are we?
0:09:52 > 0:09:55But we're just having a nice little lie down in the sun.
0:09:55 > 0:09:58Fantastic scenes here at Copacabana.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01You could see relief on Alistair's and Jonathan's face coming in,
0:10:01 > 0:10:05and the way they laid on the ground, you could just tell that,
0:10:05 > 0:10:07at that moment, they knew that that four years were worth it.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10I think it's actually a bit more interesting in that way
0:10:10 > 0:10:13to talk about London, how you can win an Olympic gold
0:10:13 > 0:10:15medal and be slightly disappointed that your brother's only come third
0:10:15 > 0:10:19and then, in Rio, obviously to win an Olympic gold medal and then just
0:10:19 > 0:10:21the day to be complete, really, that my brother came second.
0:10:21 > 0:10:26COMMENTATOR: Jonny has to win to be sure of taking the title.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28And then it all went wrong, and I absolutely hate watching this!
0:10:28 > 0:10:29Oh, goodness me!
0:10:29 > 0:10:34This is a horrible sight!
0:10:34 > 0:10:37I come straight round the corner and I've got literally a second
0:10:37 > 0:10:38to make this decision and try to grab you.
0:10:38 > 0:10:41I think you can mouth-read what I said there.
0:10:41 > 0:10:42Yeah.
0:10:42 > 0:10:43Which we won't repeat!
0:10:43 > 0:10:44The Brownlee brothers, arm in arm.
0:10:44 > 0:10:46At this point, I remember absolutely hating you, thinking,
0:10:46 > 0:10:49"Just leave me alone, I'm quite happy to have a sit down."
0:10:49 > 0:10:52And Alistair is having to drag him across the line
0:10:52 > 0:10:56and pushing him home, pushing him home for second!
0:10:56 > 0:10:59ALISTAIR: It's not a very pleasant thing to watch back.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02I went to bed that night a bit stressed, really,
0:11:02 > 0:11:04and wake up the next morning and there's just this
0:11:04 > 0:11:06incredible reaction to it, by far more significant
0:11:06 > 0:11:11than anything I've ever done in a sporting context.
0:11:11 > 0:11:12It's heart-warming, I think, more than anything.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16It makes you think of your family, it makes you think about your
0:11:16 > 0:11:18relationship with your brothers and how that is, and I think,
0:11:18 > 0:11:20regardless of sport, it was just a fantastic moment
0:11:20 > 0:11:25to watch and you couldn't help but be moved by it.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27Well, I was!
0:11:27 > 0:11:29I was kind of a victim in the whole thing.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32It was Alistair who was the one who was really being thought
0:11:32 > 0:11:35of as sharing kindness and human kindness and brotherly love
0:11:35 > 0:11:37and looking after your brother.
0:11:37 > 0:11:42Obviously, to be part of that, I'm incredibly honoured.
0:11:42 > 0:11:47COMMENTATOR: He is the finest triathlete we've ever seen.
0:11:47 > 0:11:49I don't get...or I don't like to admit getting
0:11:49 > 0:11:50emotional about a lot.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53I like to think I'm a bit of an emotionally-stunted Northerner.
0:11:53 > 0:11:56I've achieved far more than I ever thought or even dreamed
0:11:56 > 0:11:58or set out to achieve.
0:11:58 > 0:12:06Maybe I'll be reminding people a lot more when I'm older!
0:12:06 > 0:12:09If this were the Sports COUPLE of the Year, it
0:12:09 > 0:12:10would be easy - the Kennys.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13Stop eating grass!
0:12:13 > 0:12:17Here's one half of the golden couple and when she was still Laura Trott,
0:12:17 > 0:12:20she was our most successful woman ever at the Olympics.
0:12:20 > 0:12:232016 has been the best year of my life so far.
0:12:23 > 0:12:27It's honestly been so much more than I could ever have hoped for.
0:12:27 > 0:12:30Everything that we'd hoped would happen has happened,
0:12:30 > 0:12:33right from the World Championships, through to Rio, and then,
0:12:33 > 0:12:38of course, the wedding.
0:12:38 > 0:12:41We have quite a unique experience, a quite special one,
0:12:41 > 0:12:44where we get to experience it and go through it together.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46They're both very individual characters.
0:12:46 > 0:12:50Yes, together, they're a very strong team, and they've got a ridiculous
0:12:50 > 0:12:52amount of gold between them, but they're both quite
0:12:52 > 0:12:54independent creatures.
0:12:54 > 0:12:55Laura's authentic.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57She hasn't got an angle.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00She's just out there to enjoy herself, to ride her bike,
0:13:00 > 0:13:02to be the best she can be.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04She gives off this sort of, um, contagious sort
0:13:04 > 0:13:05of enthusiasm, if you like.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07It's just difficult not to pick that up!
0:13:07 > 0:13:11She's just got so much energy!
0:13:11 > 0:13:15She has had to cope with a lot of changes, because she was born
0:13:15 > 0:13:19four weeks before she was actually due, and then, she had a collapsed
0:13:19 > 0:13:21lung and she went straight over into special care.
0:13:21 > 0:13:22From there, she was like this fighting person.
0:13:22 > 0:13:31Whatever was in her way, she was going to actually fight for it.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33She's carried that on through cycling, you know.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36It's given her a determination, and I dare say that's
0:13:36 > 0:13:43all part of the DNA that's put her where she is.
0:13:43 > 0:13:46CHRIS HOY: Laura kind of burst onto the scene in 2012 and to win
0:13:46 > 0:13:49double gold in London, her first Games, in front of a home
0:13:49 > 0:13:51crowd, it was sensational, it was incredible, and I think
0:13:51 > 0:13:53the big question was, could she replicate that
0:13:53 > 0:13:54amazing performance in Rio?
0:13:54 > 0:13:57And the answer was obviously yes.
0:13:57 > 0:13:59COMMENTATOR: Gold for Great Britain!
0:13:59 > 0:14:01They've smashed the world record.
0:14:01 > 0:14:05Out of this world!
0:14:05 > 0:14:08We looked up after that and it said "world record", I was like,
0:14:08 > 0:14:09"I can't believe we've just done that."
0:14:09 > 0:14:11Those girls, honestly, they're your family
0:14:11 > 0:14:13for a long period of time.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16So, for it all to come together, it felt like I'd been riding
0:14:16 > 0:14:19with my sisters for that event.
0:14:19 > 0:14:23It's nice to have shared experiences with Laura over these four years.
0:14:23 > 0:14:24She's got a presence about her.
0:14:24 > 0:14:25Everyone respects her.
0:14:25 > 0:14:27You'd imagine, cos she's quite small, other people
0:14:27 > 0:14:29could push her around on the track.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31But she doesn't let that happen at all.
0:14:31 > 0:14:32She really does hold her own.
0:14:32 > 0:14:34Her bike-handling skills and the way she manoeuvres,
0:14:34 > 0:14:37she can get through any small little gap in track racing,
0:14:37 > 0:14:40as well as anybody in the sport.
0:14:40 > 0:14:43She makes it look really easy, but obviously I know it isn't.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45I know she works hard.
0:14:45 > 0:14:47I think that's the thing as well.
0:14:47 > 0:14:50Once you start getting four or five or six, you think, "Oh,
0:14:50 > 0:14:52just one more," but it's not just one more.
0:14:52 > 0:14:55It's really hard just to win one gold medal, you know.
0:14:55 > 0:14:56So it's not easy.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58COMMENTATOR: It is a special, special Olympic moment
0:14:58 > 0:15:00for Great Britain - Laura Trott is Britain's
0:15:00 > 0:15:02most successful female Olympian of all time,
0:15:02 > 0:15:09a record fourth gold medal.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12They put the graphic up on the screen, and there's
0:15:12 > 0:15:14Sir Chris, there's Jason, there's Sir Bradley,
0:15:14 > 0:15:20Sir Matthew Pinsent, and then there's Laura Trott.
0:15:20 > 0:15:21HE LAUGHS.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23And you think, "Hold on!"
0:15:23 > 0:15:30These are huge Olympians, and she's up there with them.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32It just still sounds kind of surreal, because I just feel like
0:15:32 > 0:15:34that eight-year-old riding round.
0:15:34 > 0:15:36And I know, like, obviously, four gold medals is
0:15:36 > 0:15:39a massive deal but - I don't know - to me,
0:15:39 > 0:15:42I still feel like Laura, so it doesn't seem like that
0:15:42 > 0:15:43belongs with me.
0:15:43 > 0:15:44APPLAUSE AND CHEERING.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46The Olympic Games -
0:15:46 > 0:15:50they come, they sparkle and then they're gone.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53Sports and sports stars have their seasons, courses
0:15:53 > 0:15:56and tours, but they cannot be making headlines for 12 months of the year.
0:15:56 > 0:15:59Well, not normally.
0:15:59 > 0:16:01But one tennis player had a year like no other,
0:16:01 > 0:16:04and it's not as if the other years had been quiet.
0:16:04 > 0:16:07Andy Murray started 2016 in style and simply never stopped -
0:16:07 > 0:16:15on court, off court.
0:16:15 > 0:16:19Andy Murray has a new title to add to his list of achievements - Dad.
0:16:19 > 0:16:23He's obviously really excited to become a dad for the first time.
0:16:23 > 0:16:25Throughout the year, I'm more stable, like,
0:16:25 > 0:16:26emotionally after matches.
0:16:26 > 0:16:28I just feel a bit more...
0:16:28 > 0:16:30a little bit more level-headed.
0:16:30 > 0:16:34I'm not stressed kind of about...
0:16:34 > 0:16:35the outcome of matches or tournaments now,
0:16:35 > 0:16:38which is allowing me to deal with things probably
0:16:38 > 0:16:40a little bit better, seeing things from a slightly
0:16:40 > 0:16:44different perspective.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47'He's a very hands-on dad when he can be'.
0:16:47 > 0:16:48As soon as his tennis is finished with,
0:16:48 > 0:16:52he wants to get back home to his young family, and that's great.
0:16:52 > 0:16:54Absolutely delighted with that.
0:16:55 > 0:16:56CHEERING COMMENTATOR: He's there!
0:16:56 > 0:16:59Straight sets again.
0:16:59 > 0:17:01Wimbledon champion again!
0:17:01 > 0:17:03A supreme performance!
0:17:03 > 0:17:06A first-class tournament!
0:17:06 > 0:17:09To get over the line at Wimbledon was big for me.
0:17:09 > 0:17:11Definitely enjoyed that one more than, yeah,
0:17:11 > 0:17:14any of the other major tournaments that I've won.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16I just see him holding the...the cup.
0:17:16 > 0:17:17Just, he was...
0:17:17 > 0:17:20He seemed to be hugging it.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23And I saw videos of him walking out onto the balcony,
0:17:23 > 0:17:26just seeing him holding it up and just punching the air, and he
0:17:26 > 0:17:29looked really happy, so happy.
0:17:29 > 0:17:38HE LAUGHS: So was I!
0:17:38 > 0:17:41COMMENTATOR: Here they are, and here he is, and holding
0:17:41 > 0:17:43in his left arm, which is sensible, Andy Murray leads out Great Britain
0:17:43 > 0:17:45and Northern Ireland.
0:17:45 > 0:17:48An amazing experience.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51I obviously got to carry the flag as well, which, you know,
0:17:51 > 0:17:53I never expected to do that.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56Jamie took a great clip on his phone from behind of, you know,
0:17:56 > 0:18:01Andy carrying the flag as they were walking round.
0:18:01 > 0:18:04I think he said that's been probably the highlight of his career -
0:18:04 > 0:18:06you know, carrying that flag for his country.
0:18:06 > 0:18:11The final against Del Potro was a pretty brutal match.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14CHEERING.
0:18:14 > 0:18:18COMMENTATOR: Andy Murray is a double Olympic gold medallist.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21It's one of the toughest finals that I've come through.
0:18:21 > 0:18:25Really, emotionally, I found it pretty...pretty draining.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28I see, you know, on a daily basis, what he puts in,
0:18:28 > 0:18:31in order to get out of it, um, and, you know, to achieve
0:18:31 > 0:18:36the results that he's had.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40Amazing, obviously, to win another Olympic gold.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43APPLAUSE AND CHEERING.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46Andy's definitely number one of the world.
0:18:46 > 0:18:47He's the best player.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50He, er...
0:18:50 > 0:18:56CHEERING.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58Andy deserves to be where he is.
0:18:58 > 0:18:59I mean, if you look at his results
0:18:59 > 0:19:01in the last ten months,
0:19:01 > 0:19:03especially the last six months, including the clay court season,
0:19:03 > 0:19:06he's been very, very consistent, he's been playing, more or less,
0:19:06 > 0:19:07finals in each tournament.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09He's been extremely patient, and he's persevered and he's also
0:19:09 > 0:19:10gotten better, which is...
0:19:10 > 0:19:13That combination is hard to do when you've sort of been dealt
0:19:13 > 0:19:16a bunch of blows against guys - three, four, five of the greatest
0:19:16 > 0:19:17players that ever lived.
0:19:17 > 0:19:20And to come out of that the better player and the better man,
0:19:20 > 0:19:21it appears, is pretty amazing.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23APPLAUSE.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25To get to world number one is obviously...
0:19:25 > 0:19:28You know, with the players I've been competing around just now -
0:19:28 > 0:19:31Federer, Nadal and Djokovic - um, you know, it's very,
0:19:31 > 0:19:35very difficult to get there, so it's a big achievement for me.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38Being number one of the world today in a season like this is, of course,
0:19:38 > 0:19:42probably the pinnacle of the sport.
0:19:48 > 0:19:53Our number one Paralympian is cyclist and swimmer Sarah Storey.
0:19:53 > 0:19:58Dame Sarah, for services to being brilliant.
0:20:01 > 0:20:09'When I found out I was pregnant after the Games in London,
0:20:09 > 0:20:11'I was obviously absolutely delighted'.
0:20:11 > 0:20:14This one here, look, he nearly took it out of your hand.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16Yeah!
0:20:16 > 0:20:17SHE LAUGHS.
0:20:17 > 0:20:19'Louisa arrived.
0:20:19 > 0:20:22I was sat at home and I think I'd gained four stone'
0:20:22 > 0:20:25and I was thinking, "I wonder if this weight will ever come off?"
0:20:25 > 0:20:28"I wonder if I'll ever be back to my athletic self?"
0:20:28 > 0:20:29Argh!
0:20:29 > 0:20:30Ha-ha!
0:20:30 > 0:20:31LOUISA SQUEALS.
0:20:31 > 0:20:32Did I scare you?
0:20:32 > 0:20:33Yeah!
0:20:33 > 0:20:36I think, after London, a lot of people thought she might retire,
0:20:36 > 0:20:38but she had no intentions of slowing down.
0:20:38 > 0:20:41And what I was most impressed about in Rio was that she actually
0:20:41 > 0:20:42broke her own world record.
0:20:42 > 0:20:44COMMENTATOR: Here comes Sarah Storey, about to make history!
0:20:44 > 0:20:46This is a unique moment in Rio.
0:20:46 > 0:20:47Oh, and Sarah Storey's done it!
0:20:47 > 0:20:49Sarah Storey is Great Britain's most successful Paralympian
0:20:49 > 0:20:51of the modern era.
0:20:51 > 0:20:5512 gold medals!
0:20:55 > 0:20:59From Barcelona to Rio, from 1992 to 2016, and Sarah Storey
0:20:59 > 0:21:00is the champion.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02I think that, for me, the performance was probably
0:21:02 > 0:21:05the most impressive part, as opposed to the number of medals
0:21:05 > 0:21:06she racked up.
0:21:06 > 0:21:08To take that kind of title is...
0:21:08 > 0:21:10is something, you know, very significant to her,
0:21:10 > 0:21:16especially with, you know, her heroine in Tanni Grey-Thompson.
0:21:16 > 0:21:20'I won the gold medal on that first day and had to wait nearly a week
0:21:20 > 0:21:22'for the second opportunity, and I was so excited that morning.'
0:21:22 > 0:21:25I woke up far too early with the sort of nervous excitement,
0:21:25 > 0:21:27absolutely gunning to get around that time trial course,
0:21:27 > 0:21:30and then finish it off so well in the road race.
0:21:30 > 0:21:34COMMENTATOR: It is gold number 14 in the career of Sarah Storey.
0:21:34 > 0:21:38Sarah is the absolute, you know, beacon, if you like,
0:21:38 > 0:21:41in terms of someone who's organised, disciplined, manages her personal
0:21:41 > 0:21:43life, her family life, being a mum.
0:21:43 > 0:21:47It's pretty astonishing, really.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50Go on, then, in the water.
0:21:50 > 0:21:51DUCKS QUACK.
0:21:51 > 0:21:52Good shot!
0:21:52 > 0:21:55She's very determined to, I guess, change the world for women's sport
0:21:55 > 0:21:57and women's cycling, so she's not just happy
0:21:57 > 0:22:00to do her training and then sit back and relax.
0:22:00 > 0:22:01There's always something else that she does.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03She's a bit of a superwoman, really.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06I don't know how she gets the hours in the day.
0:22:06 > 0:22:07Are there any bears?
0:22:07 > 0:22:08No.
0:22:08 > 0:22:08No?
0:22:08 > 0:22:10No?
0:22:10 > 0:22:11Oh.
0:22:11 > 0:22:12Are you sure?
0:22:12 > 0:22:13Is there a den?
0:22:13 > 0:22:14Am I married to superwoman?
0:22:14 > 0:22:15Um...
0:22:15 > 0:22:17Yeah, I suppose I probably am.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20I'm part of a crew of supermums, I think.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22There's people like Shelley Rudman, Paula Radcliffe, Jo Pavey.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25I feel very fortunate to be in that' sort of realm and,
0:22:25 > 0:22:28obviously, one of my biggest mentors, Tanni Grey-Thompson,
0:22:28 > 0:22:30who had her daughter Carys and continued to race,
0:22:30 > 0:22:33so, yeah, being a supermum's pretty cool and I'm glad that I'm
0:22:33 > 0:22:38in such great company.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41Pioneers, trailblazers.
0:22:41 > 0:22:44A few years ago, all Nicola Adams had were dreams, but crucially,
0:22:44 > 0:22:50she had the drive to make her dreams come true.
0:22:51 > 0:22:54I think my favourite would have to be the first boxing
0:22:54 > 0:23:00medal, and that was in...
0:23:00 > 0:23:02That was in Ireland.
0:23:02 > 0:23:04That was in 2001.
0:23:04 > 0:23:07And that's her first-ever trophy.
0:23:07 > 0:23:09She was the first female to step into the ring
0:23:09 > 0:23:11wearing an England vest.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14Best memory of 2016 has to be being on the podium
0:23:14 > 0:23:16and receiving my gold medal.
0:23:16 > 0:23:18CHEERING.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21I think there was a lot of expectation.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23I think she was a little bit nervous, obviously, having
0:23:23 > 0:23:26the success that she had in 2012.
0:23:26 > 0:23:31'I like the pressure.
0:23:31 > 0:23:33I thrive off the pressure'.
0:23:33 > 0:23:34I use it to my advantage.
0:23:34 > 0:23:35It makes me perform better.
0:23:35 > 0:23:38So I like the fact that everything's on the line
0:23:38 > 0:23:39and everybody's coming after me.
0:23:39 > 0:23:42That's what makes me get out of bed in the morning -
0:23:42 > 0:23:44the thought of someone wanting to take my title.
0:23:44 > 0:23:47It's just me when I step in the ring, but I think
0:23:47 > 0:23:49about the sacrifices my family make to help me get there.
0:23:49 > 0:23:52My brothers had put up with my sweaty training gear
0:23:52 > 0:23:53laying around the house!
0:23:53 > 0:23:54SHE LAUGHS.
0:23:54 > 0:23:55But, yeah, it's, er...
0:23:55 > 0:24:00It's been a hard journey.
0:24:00 > 0:24:03That's her stamp, gold medal stamp.
0:24:03 > 0:24:07To actually see, you know, your daughter on one
0:24:07 > 0:24:10and what we've been through, with me being really poorly
0:24:10 > 0:24:12with the meningitis, from Nicky doing what she's done -
0:24:12 > 0:24:14looking after me, looking after her brother -
0:24:14 > 0:24:20I'm really, really proud.
0:24:20 > 0:24:24We watched it here and, you know, we was all shouting and screaming.
0:24:24 > 0:24:26COMMENTATOR: Nicola Adams, looking to join the shortlist
0:24:26 > 0:24:28of Olympic boxing legends who've taken a brace of titles
0:24:28 > 0:24:31in the boxing ring.
0:24:31 > 0:24:33Just thinking to myself, "Yeah, this is it."
0:24:33 > 0:24:36She's like, "I'll do it for you, Mum."
0:24:36 > 0:24:37I always felt in control.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39You could tell that she was confident.
0:24:39 > 0:24:42She didn't look nervous or anything.
0:24:42 > 0:24:46I was on the edge of my seat and I thought to myself, "Is she?
0:24:46 > 0:24:48Isn't she?"
0:24:48 > 0:24:50Your heart's pounding, your stomach's going over.
0:24:50 > 0:24:52You're just there, just waiting to hear the name before
0:24:52 > 0:24:53you start celebrating.
0:24:53 > 0:24:56ANNOUNCER: Nicola Adams!
0:24:56 > 0:25:00CHEERING.
0:25:00 > 0:25:02COMMENTATOR: Nicola Adams lets out a triumphant roar,
0:25:02 > 0:25:04having been crowned as Olympic champion for the second
0:25:04 > 0:25:08successive time.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11Nicola Adams, overcome with emotion, after hearing the anthem and seeing
0:25:11 > 0:25:15the Union Jack flag raised.
0:25:15 > 0:25:16I took myself by surprise.
0:25:16 > 0:25:18I'm not a crier.
0:25:18 > 0:25:21I couldn't even tell you the last time I actually cried, so...
0:25:21 > 0:25:22Apart from Rio!
0:25:22 > 0:25:26As soon as I got out of the ring, I was on the phone to my mum.
0:25:26 > 0:25:28I was like, "I did it!
0:25:28 > 0:25:29I did it!
0:25:29 > 0:25:32I won!"
0:25:32 > 0:25:33And she was so happy.
0:25:33 > 0:25:34She was cheering down the phone.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36It was another emotional moment.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38She's got the "grand slam" of titles, as she calls it.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41Yeah, she's got it all.
0:25:41 > 0:25:45So...how proud can a mother be?
0:25:45 > 0:25:48She's just given everybody that little bit of hope and, you know,
0:25:48 > 0:25:51it don't matter where you come from, it doesn't matter if you are male
0:25:51 > 0:25:54or female, what race you are - you can always, you know,
0:25:54 > 0:25:56make something of yourself.
0:25:56 > 0:25:59When Nicky came back from Rio, I saw this and I just thought,
0:25:59 > 0:26:02"I'm going to have to have that to give it to her."
0:26:02 > 0:26:05It says, "Dream until your dreams come true."
0:26:05 > 0:26:07To me, that is, like, really, really kind of special.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10If you have a dream, follow it, because it can come true.
0:26:10 > 0:26:15Look at Nicky.
0:26:18 > 0:26:21The ultimate in dreams that can never come true and do -
0:26:21 > 0:26:26the rise of Leicester City and their refusal to fall.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28The leading man in this glorious revolution -
0:26:28 > 0:26:33from non-league to Premier League title - Jamie Vardy.
0:26:34 > 0:26:40CHEERING.
0:26:40 > 0:26:41He has got unbelievable pace.
0:26:41 > 0:26:44He has unbelievable grit and determination.
0:26:44 > 0:26:46Sometimes, when I start to say something, he
0:26:46 > 0:26:47already knows what I say.
0:26:47 > 0:26:51It's fantastic.
0:26:51 > 0:26:54COMMENTATOR: Jamie Vardy, away from his man, and he scores!
0:26:54 > 0:26:55It's the Premier League record-equalling goal!
0:26:55 > 0:26:59Ten games in a row!
0:26:59 > 0:27:02I try not to think about it, cos if you think about things too
0:27:02 > 0:27:04much, then you let it affect your performance.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07So I literally just put it to the back of the mind as soon
0:27:07 > 0:27:09as you step over that line.
0:27:09 > 0:27:12At the end of the day, it's a team game and we wanted to win.
0:27:12 > 0:27:15I had family down that weekend of the Manchester United game,
0:27:15 > 0:27:18and my sister came in and she said, "Are we going to do it?"
0:27:18 > 0:27:20And she said, "I'm really excited."
0:27:20 > 0:27:23He just looked at her and said, "What are you excited for?
0:27:23 > 0:27:24It's just another game of football."
0:27:24 > 0:27:26And I think that sums up Jamie's kind of laid-back
0:27:26 > 0:27:27and down-to-earth attitude.
0:27:27 > 0:27:31COMMENTATOR: If he scores again today, it's history.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33Oh, that's a great ball.
0:27:33 > 0:27:34Vardy's in behind.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36Vardy's done it!
0:27:36 > 0:27:39He has done it.
0:27:39 > 0:27:41Jamie Vardy, 11 consecutive games!
0:27:41 > 0:27:46Scored in every single one of them!
0:27:46 > 0:27:48It was an unbelievable achievement.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51The team came first, like I say.
0:27:51 > 0:27:53If it meant I didn't score, but we got three points,
0:27:53 > 0:27:56then I'd have been more than happy with that as well.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59To not only play in the Premier League, but to play alongside
0:27:59 > 0:28:01and put your name alongside and break records of
0:28:01 > 0:28:05Ruud van Nistelrooy is a remarkable story in itself.
0:28:05 > 0:28:07For him to score those goals, to go all those games
0:28:07 > 0:28:09continuously scoring, it tells you who he
0:28:09 > 0:28:14is and what he is.
0:28:14 > 0:28:18We knew that as soon as we'd got the three points in one game,
0:28:18 > 0:28:20it was literally, "Clear that straight out your head."
0:28:20 > 0:28:22We had to focus on the next game.
0:28:22 > 0:28:23COMMENTATOR: Vardy isolated...
0:28:23 > 0:28:24Goes for it!
0:28:24 > 0:28:25Oh!
0:28:25 > 0:28:26What a screamer!
0:28:26 > 0:28:29I think a few of us realised it was a possibility,
0:28:29 > 0:28:30that it could happen.
0:28:30 > 0:28:33If we could turn up to the Etihad and beat Man City, then why can't
0:28:33 > 0:28:34we beat everyone else?
0:28:34 > 0:28:37COMMENTATOR: A 55-year wait to be champions can only end if Tottenham
0:28:37 > 0:28:41win here for the first time in 26 years.
0:28:41 > 0:28:43Tottenham winning 2-0, it was very quiet.
0:28:43 > 0:28:46Very quiet.
0:28:46 > 0:28:50But then, as soon as Chelsea got one goal back in,
0:28:50 > 0:28:52it started livening up again and then, the second went in,
0:28:52 > 0:28:55and I think everything just erupted in the house.
0:28:55 > 0:28:56CHEERING.
0:28:56 > 0:29:00The TV got smashed - as you do!
0:29:00 > 0:29:03The kind of euphoria inside as well, with all the lads, it was so nice
0:29:03 > 0:29:08to be able to be part of that and witness something so special.
0:29:08 > 0:29:15THEY CHANT: Champions, champions!
0:29:15 > 0:29:18Like I said, I think the emotions were everything, all into one.
0:29:18 > 0:29:21You will have wanted to shed a tear, but you're live on TV...
0:29:21 > 0:29:24HE LAUGHS: ..so you don't really want that to happen.
0:29:24 > 0:29:26But to get your hands on that trophy, when you've watched
0:29:26 > 0:29:29it on TV in the past, and you've seen other teams doing
0:29:29 > 0:29:32it...it's an unbelievable feeling.
0:29:32 > 0:29:34He went to bed with his Premier League medal round his neck.
0:29:34 > 0:29:36SHE LAUGHS.
0:29:36 > 0:29:40Which I thought was quite special.
0:29:40 > 0:29:44I think he had the dream to achieve something important for his career,
0:29:44 > 0:29:51and I think he's a fantastic example for everybody.
0:29:51 > 0:29:53Leicester City - the story that proves that nothing
0:29:53 > 0:29:55is predictable in sport.
0:29:55 > 0:29:58Although you could argue that we're always bound to win medals
0:29:58 > 0:30:00in the Olympic velodrome.
0:30:00 > 0:30:03Track cycling is ours!
0:30:03 > 0:30:06And nobody won more medals than the other half
0:30:06 > 0:30:08of our golden couple - Jason Kenny zoomed into
0:30:08 > 0:30:11the record books in Rio.
0:30:11 > 0:30:12# Give it to me one time.
0:30:12 > 0:30:17# Hey!
0:30:17 > 0:30:18# Give it to me two times.
0:30:18 > 0:30:21# Hey, hey!
0:30:21 > 0:30:24# Give it to me three times, yeah.
0:30:24 > 0:30:26# Hey, hey, hey!
0:30:26 > 0:30:28COMMENTATOR: It's a golden hat-trick in Rio for Jason Kenny!
0:30:28 > 0:30:30He's a thoroughbred, there's no doubt about it.
0:30:30 > 0:30:32He can race, he can sniff it out.
0:30:32 > 0:30:33He's...
0:30:33 > 0:30:34He feels it.
0:30:34 > 0:30:36He just performs so well under pressure.
0:30:36 > 0:30:38He deals with circumstances better than any athlete I've seen before.
0:30:38 > 0:30:40Obviously, you're very proud when your children
0:30:40 > 0:30:41achieve something.
0:30:41 > 0:30:43But he's no different, he's still our son.
0:30:43 > 0:30:44He's very relaxed about it.
0:30:44 > 0:30:45He's not bigheaded.
0:30:45 > 0:30:48You'll never hear him shout about his achievements.
0:30:48 > 0:30:52And I quite admire him for that, as well as for what he's already
0:30:52 > 0:30:53done with the gold medals.
0:30:53 > 0:30:55The team sprint's always the most satisfying.
0:30:55 > 0:30:57It's always the most kind of enjoyable to celebrate
0:30:57 > 0:31:03as well, cos you get to celebrate with everyone.
0:31:03 > 0:31:05And it's a team event, so obviously you've got
0:31:05 > 0:31:06the team on the track.
0:31:06 > 0:31:13But because it is a team, it seems to kind of encompass everyone.
0:31:13 > 0:31:16You need everyone to kind of push to get those three guys to the line.
0:31:16 > 0:31:18So it does kind of seem to bring everyone together,
0:31:18 > 0:31:20even off the track.
0:31:20 > 0:31:21He's a genuinely nice guy.
0:31:21 > 0:31:22I think he's got a good heart.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25But he's strong willed, he knows what he wants.
0:31:25 > 0:31:27He's got great values, he'll stick up for his values,
0:31:27 > 0:31:28and he's a fantastic competitor.
0:31:28 > 0:31:30I think Jason's not the kind of person that gets
0:31:30 > 0:31:32overly fazed by anything.
0:31:32 > 0:31:34He just kind of cracks on and does his best.
0:31:34 > 0:31:35He's cool under fire.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38So I think he's got that advantage over the rest of the riders.
0:31:38 > 0:31:41He said that he once got nervous and it didn't help him,
0:31:41 > 0:31:43so he thought he's never going to get nervous again!
0:31:43 > 0:31:44There you go.
0:31:44 > 0:31:47Yeah, what can you say - that's what he's like, isn't he?
0:31:47 > 0:31:48HE LAUGHS.
0:31:48 > 0:31:50COMMENTATOR: Five golds and a silver so far.
0:31:50 > 0:31:52He's still got the keirin to come here in Rio.
0:31:52 > 0:31:54Everybody will remember the final gold medal.
0:31:54 > 0:31:57It was under the most nerve-racking circumstances.
0:31:57 > 0:31:58STARTING GUN FIRES.
0:31:58 > 0:31:59The gunshot went for a false start.
0:31:59 > 0:32:02It looked as if Jason, potentially, was going to be relegated
0:32:02 > 0:32:03and disqualified from the event.
0:32:03 > 0:32:04My heart's racing, obviously.
0:32:04 > 0:32:07But I think mine was actually going faster than has ever been
0:32:07 > 0:32:09recorded by medical science in the past!
0:32:09 > 0:32:12And Jason's sort of tootling around, waiting for a restart.
0:32:12 > 0:32:14And I'm thinking, "How do you do that?
0:32:14 > 0:32:15How do you manage that?"
0:32:15 > 0:32:16Jason's riding round.
0:32:16 > 0:32:19I was just thinking, "Please, not now!"
0:32:19 > 0:32:21I was like that!
0:32:21 > 0:32:22Thankfully, he was allowed back in.
0:32:22 > 0:32:24And then it happened again!
0:32:24 > 0:32:26And it was just like, "What is going on?"
0:32:26 > 0:32:28COMMENTATOR: Jason Kenny's got work to do.
0:32:28 > 0:32:29He's got a gap to close.
0:32:29 > 0:32:30He's closing in.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33Up towards the line - Jason Kenny's got it!
0:32:33 > 0:32:38What a ride!
0:32:38 > 0:32:40When he crossed the line, I was just so pleased.
0:32:40 > 0:32:41Like, so emotional.
0:32:41 > 0:32:44COMMENTATOR: Jason Kenny in the form of his life.
0:32:44 > 0:32:45It felt like a perfect game.
0:32:45 > 0:32:46COMMENTATOR: Six-time Olympic gold medallist.
0:32:46 > 0:32:50No British athlete has ever won more.
0:32:50 > 0:32:51Every Olympics is special.
0:32:51 > 0:32:53Because it only comes round every four years,
0:32:53 > 0:32:55it's the kind of thing that...
0:32:55 > 0:32:58you spend your whole life looking forward to and working towards.
0:32:58 > 0:33:00Then it passes in the blink of an eye.
0:33:00 > 0:33:03That was obviously magical, and my third one as well,
0:33:03 > 0:33:07so I tried to kind of absorb it, enjoy it as much as possible.
0:33:07 > 0:33:08I think that Jason probably doesn't realise what he's
0:33:08 > 0:33:09achieved right now.
0:33:09 > 0:33:12I think it'll probably take time for him to step back
0:33:12 > 0:33:13and go, "Wow, that's...
0:33:13 > 0:33:15That's pretty special."
0:33:15 > 0:33:18The key thing to think about is his age and where he's
0:33:18 > 0:33:20at at this moment of his career.
0:33:20 > 0:33:22I think that's the defining factor for Jason, is that
0:33:22 > 0:33:25he's got to that level, but he's still got a long way
0:33:25 > 0:33:26to go in his career.
0:33:26 > 0:33:33So where he can get to - it's such an exciting prospect.
0:33:33 > 0:33:37Much less certain were the prospects for a show-jumper who,
0:33:37 > 0:33:43at the age of 58, did not have youth on his side.
0:33:45 > 0:33:47He's a great dad, and he's a great horseman and...
0:33:47 > 0:33:49Grandad.
0:33:49 > 0:33:51Grandad now as well, yeah.
0:33:51 > 0:33:53He's a good grandad.
0:33:53 > 0:33:54Yeah.
0:33:54 > 0:33:55OK, ready?
0:33:55 > 0:33:56Go!
0:33:56 > 0:33:59Nick Skelton is a name that a lot of people would know
0:33:59 > 0:34:00within show-jumping.
0:34:00 > 0:34:03He was 58 years old when he went on to win this gold medal.
0:34:03 > 0:34:04His story was incredible.
0:34:04 > 0:34:07He actually had a terrible fall, broke his neck.
0:34:07 > 0:34:10The vast majority of people who have that injury die.
0:34:10 > 0:34:12It was that serious.
0:34:12 > 0:34:14That doesn't really hit home.
0:34:14 > 0:34:17He had a bit of a rough old ride down.
0:34:17 > 0:34:21I remember at the end of the day he said, "If I can handle that,
0:34:21 > 0:34:22"I can handle riding again."
0:34:22 > 0:34:24Give her a pat.
0:34:24 > 0:34:27To be as good as he has been for almost three generations now,
0:34:27 > 0:34:29to actually not come away with an individual accolade,
0:34:29 > 0:34:35there's just been a bit of a sense of the missing piece, really.
0:34:35 > 0:34:37COMMENTATOR: Can Nick Skelton do what he's always felt this
0:34:37 > 0:34:40horse is capable of - win an individual medal
0:34:40 > 0:34:43at an Olympic Games?
0:34:43 > 0:34:46Well, Harry came down to mine, and my grandad came down to mine
0:34:46 > 0:34:49as well cos we were all down there watching it together.
0:34:49 > 0:34:52And Florence, my daughter, she didn't know what was going on.
0:34:52 > 0:34:53She was getting upset, because she thought
0:34:53 > 0:34:55everyone was upset!
0:34:55 > 0:34:57There were two rounds, and he went clear in both of those.
0:34:57 > 0:35:00It then got to the stage of there was a jump-off
0:35:00 > 0:35:01with several riders in it.
0:35:01 > 0:35:03He was the first to go.
0:35:03 > 0:35:04I've never been so emotionally drained.
0:35:04 > 0:35:05COMMENTATOR: The perfect technical round.
0:35:05 > 0:35:09Nick could not have done more.
0:35:09 > 0:35:12I always knew that there was going to be one behind him,
0:35:12 > 0:35:15at least one behind him, that would go faster.
0:35:15 > 0:35:17You just hoped that they'd have a fence down.
0:35:17 > 0:35:19COMMENTATOR: I don't know about your heart, Mike,
0:35:19 > 0:35:21how much more of this can we take?
0:35:21 > 0:35:23There were some really nervous moments as we watched every
0:35:23 > 0:35:24rider after Nick go.
0:35:24 > 0:35:26And one rider got so, so close.
0:35:26 > 0:35:29But he just had one fence down.
0:35:29 > 0:35:30COMMENTATOR: He's gone!
0:35:30 > 0:35:35Nick's won the gold!
0:35:35 > 0:35:36Oh, what a competition!
0:35:36 > 0:35:39Nick Skelton and Big Star take the gold for Great Britain.
0:35:39 > 0:35:40I literally for...
0:35:40 > 0:35:46I'd say for an hour, I cried...solid.
0:35:46 > 0:35:48It was just amazing.
0:35:48 > 0:35:50We rang up Dad.
0:35:50 > 0:35:51I just...
0:35:51 > 0:35:53I can't even remember what we said really.
0:35:53 > 0:35:54Just, "Well done, we're proud of you.
0:35:54 > 0:35:56We all love you.
0:35:56 > 0:35:58"Can't wait for you to get back."
0:35:58 > 0:36:01To watch your dad do that, it was the best feeling
0:36:01 > 0:36:02in the world, you know?
0:36:02 > 0:36:04You don't see too many big 58-year-old men
0:36:04 > 0:36:06on television crying.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09You stand there and you've won, everything goes through your mind.
0:36:09 > 0:36:11What you dreamed of doing when you were a kid.
0:36:11 > 0:36:13How you came, how you started.
0:36:13 > 0:36:15Then to finish it, bang, and you win.
0:36:15 > 0:36:19It doesn't get any better than that.
0:36:19 > 0:36:23Dad let his hair down like a rock star when he got that medal.
0:36:23 > 0:36:26I was down the pub the day after and the table next to us,
0:36:26 > 0:36:29a table of eight were talking about the old guy on the horse
0:36:29 > 0:36:31who won the gold medal.
0:36:31 > 0:36:34If ever a horse was going to do it, Big Star was.
0:36:34 > 0:36:36Very brave, very intelligent.
0:36:36 > 0:36:37Good to ride.
0:36:37 > 0:36:39I will go as long as what he goes.
0:36:39 > 0:36:41When he stops, I'll stop.
0:36:41 > 0:36:43It's always been about what he could do for us.
0:36:43 > 0:36:49So for him to actually get that personally was just great.
0:36:49 > 0:36:52If I've appealed to people because of my age, and doing that
0:36:52 > 0:37:00at my age, then I think that I've achieved something.
0:37:00 > 0:37:03It definitely means more to him than it probably would have
0:37:03 > 0:37:06done when he was 35.
0:37:06 > 0:37:09It's a dream ending.
0:37:13 > 0:37:16Once upon a time, gymnastics seemed to be for others to win.
0:37:16 > 0:37:18Now we have Max Whitlock, and the next generation
0:37:18 > 0:37:23of Max Whitlocks.
0:37:23 > 0:37:24To us, he's just Max.
0:37:24 > 0:37:26He's a normal guy.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29We've grown up with him from...however young.
0:37:29 > 0:37:32I think I've been training with him for over ten years.
0:37:32 > 0:37:33He's the most relaxed guy going.
0:37:33 > 0:37:37He's a bit of the, like, the clown of the group, I'd say.
0:37:37 > 0:37:41It used to be a dream for a British gymnast to become Olympic champion.
0:37:41 > 0:37:44Now it's a reality, and it's all because of Max Whitlock.
0:37:44 > 0:37:50My gosh, that's my son!
0:37:50 > 0:37:53It was an Olympics that truly is a once in a lifetime.
0:37:53 > 0:37:56To come away with an Olympic gold is any athlete's dream.
0:37:56 > 0:38:02To go and do it and come out with two is just unreal.
0:38:02 > 0:38:04COMMENTATOR: Max Whitlock with his first of six pieces
0:38:04 > 0:38:06of apparatus in this men's all-around Olympic final.
0:38:06 > 0:38:10The ultimate event is to go in the all-around.
0:38:10 > 0:38:13You've got to get six right routines right on the day.
0:38:13 > 0:38:17COMMENTATOR: Oh, yes!
0:38:17 > 0:38:20Well done, Max.
0:38:20 > 0:38:21What a performance!
0:38:21 > 0:38:22It was such an intense competition.
0:38:22 > 0:38:26You know, there was a lot of waiting, a lot of intense waiting
0:38:26 > 0:38:27after I'd finished all my routines.
0:38:27 > 0:38:29COMMENTATOR: We have a bronze in the gymnastics.
0:38:29 > 0:38:32To actually go and get that medal probably meant just as much,
0:38:32 > 0:38:35if not more, than the gold medals.
0:38:37 > 0:38:40The day of the individual finals, Max Whitlock was in two of them.
0:38:40 > 0:38:46The hardest floor final that anyone on the planet has ever seen.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49And you often see him before he starts, and he just
0:38:49 > 0:38:50takes this breath.
0:38:50 > 0:38:54And this air of calm that just comes across the whole arena.
0:38:54 > 0:38:56And he goes.
0:38:58 > 0:39:00He nails it.
0:39:00 > 0:39:03And then he sits down, and then the next gymnast goes.
0:39:03 > 0:39:04And then the next gymnast goes.
0:39:04 > 0:39:06And no-one could beat him.
0:39:06 > 0:39:10It got to the last gymnast to go up, and he takes a little stumble.
0:39:10 > 0:39:13And we all looked at each other in the commentary box,
0:39:13 > 0:39:17and we knew that Max Whitlock had become Olympic champion.
0:39:17 > 0:39:19Your heart is just pounding, and it's just so fantastic
0:39:19 > 0:39:22to be in that arena.
0:39:22 > 0:39:26I just tapped him on the shoulder and I said, "Max", and he looked up.
0:39:26 > 0:39:27I said, "You're Olympic champion!"
0:39:27 > 0:39:29And he just burst into tears.
0:39:29 > 0:39:32That was the first time that we've really had a big emotional moment.
0:39:32 > 0:39:35And it wasn't even pommel horse, it was floor.
0:39:35 > 0:39:36I mean, I couldn't believe it.
0:39:36 > 0:39:39I couldn't believe it!
0:39:39 > 0:39:41It was mental to watch someone that you knew achieve
0:39:41 > 0:39:42something so amazing.
0:39:42 > 0:39:45Me and my husband just looked at each other and sort
0:39:45 > 0:39:47of shed a few tears.
0:39:47 > 0:39:49Then we sort of thought, "Is this...
0:39:49 > 0:39:50Did this really happen?"
0:39:50 > 0:39:52I sat with my medal for a couple of minutes
0:39:52 > 0:39:54trying to make it sink in.
0:39:54 > 0:39:58I wrapped it up, gave it to Scott, and that was sort of job done,
0:39:58 > 0:40:00move onto the next one.
0:40:00 > 0:40:03COMMENTATOR: Max Whitlock, recently crowned floor Olympic champion.
0:40:03 > 0:40:05His chance now on pommel horse.
0:40:05 > 0:40:08The place was erupting.
0:40:08 > 0:40:10You've trained that long, that many years, that many hours
0:40:10 > 0:40:14in the gym to get to that position.
0:40:14 > 0:40:17COMMENTATOR: Max Whitlock has done everything he can.
0:40:17 > 0:40:22For it to be good enough and go clean is just unbelievable.
0:40:22 > 0:40:28COMMENTATOR: Max Whitlock - double Olympic champion!
0:40:28 > 0:40:32When you look at true champions, they are not people that follow.
0:40:32 > 0:40:36They are people that show others what is possible.
0:40:36 > 0:40:38I'm just very, very proud of him.
0:40:38 > 0:40:42And...I love him so much!
0:40:42 > 0:40:45Showing what can be done.
0:40:45 > 0:40:49Refusing to accept that your career in sport has ended.
0:40:49 > 0:40:50Adapting.
0:40:50 > 0:40:52Blossoming.
0:40:52 > 0:40:55Meet Kadeena Cox.
0:40:55 > 0:40:57I was at a competition and I was suffering with weakness
0:40:57 > 0:41:02in my right arm and right leg, and disturbed speech.
0:41:02 > 0:41:05The next day, I was diagnosed with a stroke, which for any
0:41:05 > 0:41:0923-year-old is a diagnosis you just don't expect.
0:41:09 > 0:41:14My whole world had come crashing down.
0:41:14 > 0:41:16I woke up one morning with what was just a small burning
0:41:16 > 0:41:17sensation in my arms.
0:41:17 > 0:41:20She said, "Mum, I'm burning, "my legs."
0:41:20 > 0:41:22And I'm like, "What's wrong?"
0:41:22 > 0:41:23She said she can't feel her hand.
0:41:23 > 0:41:26I'm like, "Oh, no, not another stroke."
0:41:26 > 0:41:29I spent the next couple of days in the hospital before I got
0:41:29 > 0:41:32a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.
0:41:32 > 0:41:37I don't like to think back about that day.
0:41:37 > 0:41:40I just feared that I was going to lose my independence and no
0:41:40 > 0:41:44longer be able to do what I wanted to do.
0:41:44 > 0:41:49My first thing to the doctor, "Will she be able to run again?"
0:41:49 > 0:41:51And he said to me...
0:41:51 > 0:41:54"Why not?"
0:41:54 > 0:41:58And for me, that was OK, cos I knew she would get up again.
0:41:58 > 0:42:01She just kind of always reminded me that things were going to be OK.
0:42:01 > 0:42:05She just encouraged me to keep doing what was going to make me happy
0:42:05 > 0:42:06and get me through it.
0:42:06 > 0:42:09So, yeah, she is my absolute rock, bless her.
0:42:09 > 0:42:11To see her run again...
0:42:11 > 0:42:15I can't really describe it.
0:42:15 > 0:42:17I can't...
0:42:17 > 0:42:21It was very difficult for me to hold back the tears that day when I see
0:42:21 > 0:42:23she start doing something she loved again.
0:42:23 > 0:42:26Even though she was in so much pain when she finished.
0:42:26 > 0:42:29But it was like, nothing mattered, she could run again.
0:42:29 > 0:42:30I was cute.
0:42:30 > 0:42:31Yeah.
0:42:31 > 0:42:34Thanks!
0:42:34 > 0:42:36I knew she really want to represent her country.
0:42:36 > 0:42:38That's something always been in her.
0:42:38 > 0:42:42So, for me, in myself, I wasn't too certain.
0:42:42 > 0:42:45But I know that she was certain that she got to get up.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48I had told Kadeena, 2014 Kadeena, that she was going to
0:42:48 > 0:42:50be on a plane to Rio.
0:42:50 > 0:42:53And had I not had a genuine hope of doing that, I wouldn't have
0:42:53 > 0:42:55been able to achieve it.
0:42:55 > 0:42:57You've got to believe you're going to do something,
0:42:57 > 0:43:01otherwise it's very, very hard to achieve it.
0:43:09 > 0:43:10Rio was wonderful.
0:43:10 > 0:43:14The race was...oh!
0:43:14 > 0:43:19COMMENTATOR: This is an incredible ride from Kadeena Cox.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22And now it is a huge gold medal with a brand-new world record!
0:43:22 > 0:43:24Anyone that watched me on the podium, seeing me kind
0:43:24 > 0:43:27of smiling and dancing, and then crying.
0:43:27 > 0:43:28Then smiling!
0:43:28 > 0:43:32It was emotional, but...it's a feeling you just can't describe.
0:43:32 > 0:43:35Achieving in one sport is fantastic, particularly at that level.
0:43:35 > 0:43:36But achieving in two is truly remarkable.
0:43:36 > 0:43:39COMMENTATOR: Kadeena Cox, gold in the velodrome
0:43:39 > 0:43:44and gold now on the track.
0:43:44 > 0:43:48As a mum, you don't want to put too much stress on her body cos
0:43:48 > 0:43:50I see her at her low points.
0:43:50 > 0:43:54Today, I'm very proud of her.
0:43:54 > 0:43:57Just a hug from your mum is more than enough to give you that
0:43:57 > 0:43:59reassurance that you need.
0:43:59 > 0:44:02She was always there to give me either a long
0:44:02 > 0:44:07lecture or just a cuddle, which is perfect.
0:44:07 > 0:44:12Every Olympic arena has its aura, its own special flavour.
0:44:12 > 0:44:15But there's something about those big nights at the athletics.
0:44:15 > 0:44:16Mo nights!
0:44:16 > 0:44:17A champion is a champion.
0:44:17 > 0:44:20Mo Farah is the best, of course.
0:44:20 > 0:44:23His achievement is really incredible.
0:44:23 > 0:44:25No athlete in history has ever had that longevity
0:44:25 > 0:44:28of winning, winning, winning.
0:44:28 > 0:44:31Nobody's done it like Mo.
0:44:32 > 0:44:34Go on, Farah!
0:44:34 > 0:44:35Go on!
0:44:35 > 0:44:37Good lad.
0:44:37 > 0:44:39This fellow has just won the English Cross Country Championships.
0:44:39 > 0:44:40And what's your name?
0:44:40 > 0:44:48Mohamed Farah.
0:44:48 > 0:44:49Star of the future!
0:44:49 > 0:44:512016 was a big year.
0:44:51 > 0:44:52To have the Olympics, it was pretty incredible.
0:44:52 > 0:44:56All I was thinking about was mainly just to try and see if I can win
0:44:56 > 0:44:58two more gold medals and retain my title.
0:44:58 > 0:44:59COMMENTATOR: So, here we go.
0:44:59 > 0:45:00The 10,000m final.
0:45:00 > 0:45:02Mo Farah is a very smart runner.
0:45:02 > 0:45:05And you can see him winning in fast races, winning events.
0:45:05 > 0:45:06He has a great finish.
0:45:06 > 0:45:08COMMENTATOR: Look at the confusion he's caused behind him.
0:45:08 > 0:45:10Everybody goes, "Oh, the game's on - Mo's up!"
0:45:10 > 0:45:12As the race goes on, he has a mesmerising effect.
0:45:12 > 0:45:15He had a mesmerising effect on me when he fell over
0:45:15 > 0:45:17and bounced on the track.
0:45:17 > 0:45:20Boom - I just go down to the ground.
0:45:20 > 0:45:21COMMENTATOR: Mo's fallen.
0:45:21 > 0:45:23Just got a little clip there.
0:45:23 > 0:45:25At that point, yes, I was panicking.
0:45:25 > 0:45:29I was panicking, I was like, "Oh, my God, my race is over.
0:45:29 > 0:45:30"I'm done.
0:45:30 > 0:45:31"Oh, everything's over.
0:45:31 > 0:45:34"Everything I worked for."
0:45:34 > 0:45:37And then, back of my mind, I was like, "No, can't
0:45:37 > 0:45:38happen, it can't happen."
0:45:38 > 0:45:40I was like, "I've worked too hard for this."
0:45:40 > 0:45:43I'd promised my daughter, Rhianna, I was going to get a gold medal.
0:45:43 > 0:45:45So I was like, "I can't let her down.
0:45:45 > 0:45:46I can't let her down.
0:45:46 > 0:45:47I've got to get up."
0:45:47 > 0:45:49COMMENTATOR: Has Mo got the power?
0:45:49 > 0:45:51Has he got the strength, has he got the speed
0:45:51 > 0:45:52to defend his title?
0:45:52 > 0:45:53Mo Farah wins the gold!
0:45:53 > 0:45:55When he finished, he was shaking.
0:45:55 > 0:45:58He was nervous.
0:45:58 > 0:46:00He was thinking, "My goodness, how close was I "to losing
0:46:00 > 0:46:02the Olympic title?"
0:46:02 > 0:46:04You know it, it was almost gone from you.
0:46:04 > 0:46:06I was almost...
0:46:06 > 0:46:08You almost lost it.
0:46:08 > 0:46:10As soon as I crossed the line, get up, celebrate.
0:46:10 > 0:46:13And then I was like, run backwards, then I run forward, and back.
0:46:13 > 0:46:16I was like, "Where are they, where are they?"
0:46:16 > 0:46:18My wife, my daughter, I hugged and kissed them.
0:46:18 > 0:46:19Then I think...
0:46:19 > 0:46:21I ran off.
0:46:21 > 0:46:24My wife was like, "I don't even know if you were with it.
0:46:24 > 0:46:26Do you remember seeing us?"
0:46:26 > 0:46:27I was like, "Yeah."
0:46:27 > 0:46:29But I don't know!
0:46:29 > 0:46:32He's found the training this year really difficult.
0:46:32 > 0:46:34He's found it harder than ever, going away from home
0:46:34 > 0:46:39and training as hard as he does.
0:46:39 > 0:46:42Who wants to be away from where they grew up,
0:46:42 > 0:46:45where they have friends, where they have families?
0:46:45 > 0:46:46No-one.
0:46:46 > 0:46:49But if you want to become a champion, if you want to achieve
0:46:49 > 0:46:52something, then it comes with it.
0:46:52 > 0:46:57COMMENTATOR: Mo going for the double double.
0:46:57 > 0:47:00For me, it was just, I need to go for this
0:47:00 > 0:47:03and see if I can win one more gold for my son.
0:47:03 > 0:47:04There's something about him.
0:47:04 > 0:47:06On the track, in his mind, he's absolutely ruthless.
0:47:06 > 0:47:09Determined and focused.
0:47:09 > 0:47:09He destroyed everything.
0:47:09 > 0:47:12Everybody!
0:47:12 > 0:47:15It's hard to stay at the top, but you have to.
0:47:15 > 0:47:19He is unstoppable.
0:47:19 > 0:47:20COMMENTATOR: Three medals in the bag.
0:47:20 > 0:47:22Is it to be another one?
0:47:22 > 0:47:24Is it to be an historic four?
0:47:24 > 0:47:26Mo Farah is going to get gold for Great Britain again.
0:47:26 > 0:47:28Four Olympic titles.
0:47:28 > 0:47:31Four Olympic gold medals.
0:47:31 > 0:47:34Incredible from Mo Farah!
0:47:34 > 0:47:36I don't want to fail.
0:47:36 > 0:47:39I want to continue, achieve what I can.
0:47:39 > 0:47:41And later, when the time is right, stop and say, "Look,
0:47:41 > 0:47:44I did my country proud, I did my people proud.
0:47:44 > 0:47:47I did what I could do."
0:47:47 > 0:47:53And from the wild nights at the athletics, to the still of this.
0:47:53 > 0:47:59Rider and horse in perfect silent harmony.
0:47:59 > 0:48:04Golden girl, Sophie Christiansen.
0:48:04 > 0:48:11I always want to do the best that I can in all areas of my life.
0:48:11 > 0:48:13I started riding for therapy to help my disability
0:48:13 > 0:48:20when I was six years old.
0:48:20 > 0:48:23And, for me, riding a horse was so much more fun than doing
0:48:23 > 0:48:30boring physio exercises!
0:48:30 > 0:48:33With Sophie, because she's got cerebral palsy, she's got very weak
0:48:33 > 0:48:38stability which means that she's not very balanced on her feet.
0:48:38 > 0:48:41Give her four feet and she's better than having her own two.
0:48:41 > 0:48:47She's often in a motability scooter when you talk to her.
0:48:47 > 0:48:51Then she gets onto a horse and she is this beautiful, graceful rider.
0:48:51 > 0:49:00She has to look pristine on the horse.
0:49:00 > 0:49:03She has to have her cravate all done properly with the pin in the right
0:49:03 > 0:49:06place and no fluff on the jacket, with her shoes and boots polished.
0:49:06 > 0:49:09In fact, she used to give me my pocket money
0:49:09 > 0:49:11for treating her leather tack for the horse, and polishing
0:49:11 > 0:49:15her boots and chaps and that kind of thing.
0:49:15 > 0:49:18She is not just good at her sport, she's also got a Masters
0:49:18 > 0:49:19degree in mathematics.
0:49:19 > 0:49:22I work as a tech analyst for an investment bank cos
0:49:22 > 0:49:26I'm a bit of a geek!
0:49:26 > 0:49:31But me having that balance between sport and when I was studying,
0:49:31 > 0:49:33and then on to work, really helped me achieve
0:49:33 > 0:49:43the most in each of them.
0:49:43 > 0:49:46And also, because in my sport, we don't really get much prize
0:49:46 > 0:49:54money and sponsorship, I have to work to make ends meet.
0:49:54 > 0:49:58Sophie won two gold medals in Beijing.
0:49:58 > 0:49:59She took three in London.
0:49:59 > 0:50:00And then she took three in Rio.
0:50:00 > 0:50:04She really is the poster girl of dressage.
0:50:04 > 0:50:10I had a really terrible build-up to Rio.
0:50:10 > 0:50:12Nothing went to plan.
0:50:12 > 0:50:14My horse got injured.
0:50:14 > 0:50:19I had a new coach.
0:50:19 > 0:50:22It was hugely stressful in the build-up to Rio.
0:50:22 > 0:50:24You know, this is the biggest event in Paralympic dressage.
0:50:24 > 0:50:30So she was dealing with a lot of stress and a lot of change.
0:50:30 > 0:50:33But with the help of her friends, and family, and her boyfriend,
0:50:33 > 0:50:37she managed to get her head in the right place.
0:50:37 > 0:50:41So when I won in Rio, it was the first ever time I cried
0:50:41 > 0:50:44on the podium because I've been through so much, and I finally did
0:50:44 > 0:50:54it and it was moving.
0:50:56 > 0:51:01Success can be a question of balance.
0:51:01 > 0:51:03New dad and Masters champion Danny Willett on one
0:51:03 > 0:51:05life-changing week.
0:51:05 > 0:51:08To talk through it, you realise you go through all your emotions
0:51:08 > 0:51:10and what happened, and how it happened, and the timing
0:51:10 > 0:51:12of everything.
0:51:12 > 0:51:13Just surreal, really.
0:51:13 > 0:51:17Just miraculous in how it all came about.
0:51:17 > 0:51:19Danny's obviously played very, very well the whole week,
0:51:19 > 0:51:21and found himself in a position where he could get
0:51:21 > 0:51:22that green jacket.
0:51:22 > 0:51:25He kept in contention.
0:51:25 > 0:51:27He was there, ready to maybe pounce.
0:51:27 > 0:51:30You never knew.
0:51:30 > 0:51:35The pressure on the last nine holes at Augusta is always enormous.
0:51:35 > 0:51:37We heard all the oohs and ahhs.
0:51:37 > 0:51:39Someone just shouted in the crowd, "Look at the leaderboard,
0:51:39 > 0:51:40you're leading the Masters!"
0:51:40 > 0:51:41Spieth blew up.
0:51:41 > 0:51:44I mean, he had a catastrophe in the space of 30 minutes.
0:51:44 > 0:51:48COMMENTATOR: Just like that - five shots gone.
0:51:48 > 0:51:51Goodness!
0:51:51 > 0:51:54We kind of looked up and kind of looked back at each other.
0:51:54 > 0:51:56We were kind of just like, "Huh, interesting!"
0:51:56 > 0:51:59Danny found himself then thrust into the lead.
0:51:59 > 0:52:02"Oh, my God - I'm there, I'm right on the verge of winning!"
0:52:02 > 0:52:07To do it, he had to control himself, and he did it quite magnificently.
0:52:07 > 0:52:08COMMENTATOR: This is all new for him.
0:52:08 > 0:52:11I'm sure he's never experienced what he's feeling right now.
0:52:11 > 0:52:13Your hands are shaking.
0:52:13 > 0:52:15Your mind's racing a little bit, and your heart's pumping.
0:52:15 > 0:52:19It literally does come back to, trust yourself, do what you do.
0:52:19 > 0:52:25COMMENTATOR: That's a massive shot and a fantastic result.
0:52:25 > 0:52:27All of a sudden, Danny Willett in control of his own fate maybe here.
0:52:31 > 0:52:33This is what it's all about.
0:52:33 > 0:52:37Once you get in a tense situation in sport, this gets busy.
0:52:37 > 0:52:38Pictures come in.
0:52:38 > 0:52:39Thoughts come in.
0:52:39 > 0:52:43"What am I going to say if I win this?"
0:52:43 > 0:52:45"What am I going to say if it goes wrong?"
0:52:45 > 0:52:48On that day, you know, I felt in control of most things.
0:52:48 > 0:52:51All of a sudden, we've gone in the last 45 minutes from,
0:52:51 > 0:52:54I think, three or four behind to three in front.
0:52:54 > 0:52:55I mean, it was bonkers, but it's...
0:52:55 > 0:52:56You know, it's golf.
0:52:56 > 0:53:00The little chips, the little shots he played when he missed the green
0:53:00 > 0:53:02in the final few holes were real nerve and quality.
0:53:02 > 0:53:03It was a tremendous effort.
0:53:03 > 0:53:08Wonderful.
0:53:08 > 0:53:10You've got to grasp those opportunities with open
0:53:10 > 0:53:12arms when you get them, and certainly Danny did that
0:53:12 > 0:53:13at Augusta this year.
0:53:13 > 0:53:15COMMENTATOR: Gently, gently.
0:53:15 > 0:53:16Well done, well done.

0:53:17 > 0:53:19We wait and see.
0:53:19 > 0:53:21It was just a crazy old waiting game.
0:53:21 > 0:53:24I'm looking at the TV, well, "If Jordan does this
0:53:24 > 0:53:28here and does this here...."
0:53:28 > 0:53:31You're going over all the scenarios as to where you can get beat.
0:53:31 > 0:53:34As soon as he made bogey on 17, it's a physical impossibility to tie.
0:53:34 > 0:53:37Then I was on the phone to Nick at the time,
0:53:37 > 0:53:40and I remember Johnny ran in and jumped on me on the sofa.
0:53:40 > 0:53:42That was the moment when you realise what you've just achieved,
0:53:42 > 0:53:50it isn't a dream, it's come true.
0:53:50 > 0:53:53When you walk through the door at home, you're not Masters champion.
0:53:53 > 0:53:59You're Dad, and you're straight back to changing nappies.
0:53:59 > 0:54:02You take the jacket off so you don't get anything on it.
0:54:02 > 0:54:04Then you hang it up and just try to enjoy it.
0:54:04 > 0:54:09Just a crazy old few days, really.
0:54:09 > 0:54:11There were crazy times here, too.
0:54:11 > 0:54:13The welcome home to Wales.
0:54:13 > 0:54:16Welcome back, Gareth Bale.
0:54:16 > 0:54:20They'd waited 58 years to qualify for a major championship.
0:54:20 > 0:54:24They didn't want to be sent home early.
0:54:24 > 0:54:27We know what the expectations are on us as a group,
0:54:27 > 0:54:31as a team, as a country, and know what we're capable of.
0:54:31 > 0:54:34To be fully involved as a nation is going to be
0:54:34 > 0:54:34amazing for everybody.
0:54:34 > 0:54:36We hope we can do everybody proud.
0:54:36 > 0:54:38He started off at Southampton.
0:54:38 > 0:54:40He was hard-working, level-headed.
0:54:40 > 0:54:42Composed.
0:54:42 > 0:54:46He's just a fantastic all-round footballer.
0:54:46 > 0:54:49He's got a wand of a left foot, and I think the biggest attribute
0:54:49 > 0:54:52I can pay him is that he's a matchwinner.
0:54:52 > 0:54:55He is playing with the world's best, and he doesn't look out of place.
0:54:55 > 0:54:59In fact, he looks comfortable.
0:54:59 > 0:55:02He looks as if he's enjoying his life and he's enjoying his football.
0:55:02 > 0:55:04Real Madrid see Gareth Bale as part of their long-term plans,
0:55:04 > 0:55:08which is some accolade from them as well.
0:55:08 > 0:55:10There's so much intrusion into your life if you're
0:55:10 > 0:55:11a Real Madrid player.
0:55:11 > 0:55:12You're galactico.
0:55:12 > 0:55:15Certain types of characters can make it work, and it's
0:55:15 > 0:55:16harder for other types.
0:55:16 > 0:55:18But with him, he's very calm.
0:55:18 > 0:55:20He's a family man.
0:55:20 > 0:55:22He's not interested in maybe the razzmatazz that comes
0:55:22 > 0:55:24with being a galactico.
0:55:24 > 0:55:28He just wants to go and win trophies and get better as a player.

0:55:43 > 0:55:45People like Gareth Bale, they lead within their performance
0:55:45 > 0:55:46and within their playing.
0:55:46 > 0:55:50I think the way he scored for Wales against England,
0:55:50 > 0:55:53that was the moment, I think, that Wales
0:55:53 > 0:55:54thought, "You know what?
0:55:54 > 0:55:57We belong at this level.
0:55:57 > 0:55:58We can go on and be successful."
0:55:58 > 0:56:02After the England game that we lost, he was the first one to do
0:56:02 > 0:56:04an interview afterwards.
0:56:04 > 0:56:05Very professional.
0:56:05 > 0:56:09That's when you see a true leader.
