0:01:36 > 0:01:39BBC Sports Personality Of The Year 2017.
0:01:39 > 0:01:41To guide us through the shortlist,
0:01:41 > 0:01:44I'm delighted to be joined by font of all knowledge Richard Osmond,
0:01:44 > 0:01:46from Pointless, amongst other things.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51- Welcome, guys.- Thank you. - Thank you.
0:01:51 > 0:01:52So much to choose from,
0:01:52 > 0:01:54but what has stood out for you sporting-wise in 2017, Richard?
0:01:54 > 0:01:57Well, aside from this amazing shortlist,
0:01:57 > 0:01:59I'm a huge fan of an underdog story
0:01:59 > 0:02:02so I thought that the FA Cup this year was absolutely sensational.
0:02:02 > 0:02:04If I had to pick out one moment,
0:02:04 > 0:02:07probably you'd have to say Lincoln winning late on against Burnley,
0:02:07 > 0:02:10becoming the first club in over 100 years, first non-league club,
0:02:10 > 0:02:12to get to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14And, for you, to win a World Championship eight years
0:02:14 > 0:02:18after your first, Tom, and still look like you need ID
0:02:18 > 0:02:21to get into even the library is an incredible thing.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24Yeah, I mean, I was just a baby back in 2009 and,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26eight years later, I'm still going strong
0:02:26 > 0:02:29- but now the grandad of the team instead of the baby.- Good stuff.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31Well, have you ever wondered how the shortlist
0:02:31 > 0:02:34for Sports Personality Of The Year is decided?
0:02:34 > 0:02:35It's not that straightforward.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37Here's Colin Murray to tell you more.
0:02:40 > 0:02:41Hello, I'm Colin Murray.
0:02:41 > 0:02:46Behind me are gathered 12 very angry men and women around a table
0:02:46 > 0:02:51to decide the 2017 shortlist for the Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53There are top journalists in that room,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56there are great sports people in that room, and then there's me.
0:02:56 > 0:02:57Let's do it.
0:02:57 > 0:02:59Hello and welcome to our session this morning.
0:02:59 > 0:03:01It's a really great group to be part of
0:03:01 > 0:03:03cos it's a very, very lively debate,
0:03:03 > 0:03:06in the best possible sense, and very different perspectives.
0:03:06 > 0:03:08Growing up as a kid, dreaming of becoming a sports person,
0:03:08 > 0:03:11one of the first things that you see that you go
0:03:11 > 0:03:13"I want to be there one day"
0:03:13 > 0:03:16is the Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19You tend to focus on what has that individual done,
0:03:19 > 0:03:22what's their back story? What's their story in terms of
0:03:22 > 0:03:23how they've achieved what they've achieved?
0:03:23 > 0:03:26And they need not necessarily have won something incredible.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29- It just might be their journey. - You don't necessarily do it
0:03:29 > 0:03:31for these awards. You do it because you want to be very good
0:03:31 > 0:03:33at your sport. But then to think at the end of the year
0:03:33 > 0:03:35you'll also get recognised by the nation,
0:03:35 > 0:03:38it just adds almost a bit of icing on top of the cake.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41We had some really, really great discussions.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43We all came to a consensus, in the end,
0:03:43 > 0:03:45and it's a list that we're really proud of
0:03:45 > 0:03:47and feel is very, very strong.
0:03:47 > 0:03:49That was a long, long debate.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52My idea to just have all of the Northern Ireland squad
0:03:52 > 0:03:54nominated for Sports Personality Of The Year didn't get through,
0:03:54 > 0:03:59but what a cracking dozen it is, and it's now up to you to decide.
0:03:59 > 0:04:01Oh, to be a fly on the wall in that room.
0:04:01 > 0:04:03Well, over the next hour, we're going to hear from
0:04:03 > 0:04:06all of this year's contenders and hear from some top sports stars
0:04:06 > 0:04:09who've won this iconic trophy in the past.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11And, just like five years ago,
0:04:11 > 0:04:13all eyes were on the Olympic Stadium in London.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16This time for the World Athletics Championships.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19And, just like 2012, Mo Farah was the one to beat.
0:04:19 > 0:04:22And who better to talk you through his incredible story than
0:04:22 > 0:04:26a man who won Sports Personality Of The Year in 1974,
0:04:26 > 0:04:29and commentated on all of Mo's achievements?
0:04:40 > 0:04:43And with an insatiable appetite for gold.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46He's a one-man world superpower!
0:04:46 > 0:04:48It's gold for Farah!
0:04:48 > 0:04:50It's a big year, 2017,
0:04:50 > 0:04:52to have the World Championship right on our doorstep.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55It was incredible and for me the biggest thing really was
0:04:55 > 0:04:56winning the gold and the silver.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01That 10K race in London was one of the hardest races of my life.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04He knows what he has to do from this point in, but they're making it
0:05:04 > 0:05:07hard, they're making it tough and Mo Farah comes to the front.
0:05:07 > 0:05:11I ran four seconds outside my personal best and that was tough.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13He was even tripped on the last lap and, you know,
0:05:13 > 0:05:14the strength of the man,
0:05:14 > 0:05:16the inner strength he's got, the physical strength,
0:05:16 > 0:05:18kept him on his feet, kept his balance,
0:05:18 > 0:05:21and there was only one thing he was going to do that night in London -
0:05:21 > 0:05:22it was to win the gold medal.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24He's going to take another world title.
0:05:24 > 0:05:28He's a one-man world superpower. It's gold for Farah!
0:05:30 > 0:05:335,000 metres - cameras trained on one man,
0:05:33 > 0:05:35a moment of history they hope.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37Tactically, I think
0:05:37 > 0:05:41I did everything that I could do in order for me to win that race.
0:05:41 > 0:05:42Mo's under a little bit of pressure.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44He's got to do what he's done before.
0:05:44 > 0:05:46But there was just a better man on the day
0:05:46 > 0:05:49and there's nothing you can do. Better opposition won on that day.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52Mo Farah fights for the silver.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55That's the end of a fantastic track career.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57I enjoyed my track career and I'm sure next year
0:05:57 > 0:05:59when I do marathon stuff,
0:05:59 > 0:06:02whenever the major championship is on and you're watching it, going,
0:06:02 > 0:06:06"I was in that position once," then that's when you start to reflect.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09There's only the great Carl Lewis
0:06:09 > 0:06:11and Usain Bolt that have got any more Olympic gold medals
0:06:11 > 0:06:12in individual events,
0:06:12 > 0:06:16and then when you look at his World Championship performances,
0:06:16 > 0:06:17he's won six gold medals.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20The only athlete in the history of the World Athletics Championships
0:06:20 > 0:06:24who's got more than six gold medals is the great Usain Bolt.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27So, when you put him in the record books, he's, like, right up there.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Sports Personality Of The Year was a fantastic occasion.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32It was completely different to what it is now.
0:06:32 > 0:06:33It was low-key, comparatively.
0:06:33 > 0:06:38However, the accolade of being voted by the BBC viewers
0:06:38 > 0:06:41was then a huge honour, remains a huge honour.
0:06:41 > 0:06:42It was a pleasure to win it.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44It's a pretty amazing feeling
0:06:44 > 0:06:47to be called one of the greatest athletes in Britain.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49You know, I just love what I do
0:06:49 > 0:06:51and I just want to continue running and do what I do best.
0:06:51 > 0:06:55Having a dream and following that dream hasn't been easy
0:06:55 > 0:06:56but it's been worth it.
0:06:58 > 0:07:00Another vintage year for Britain's greatest ever track
0:07:00 > 0:07:02and field athlete, Sir Mo Farah,
0:07:02 > 0:07:05and if you think Mo does a lot of laps of the track,
0:07:05 > 0:07:07this guy does even more.
0:07:07 > 0:07:102017 saw Lewis Hamilton become Britain's most successful
0:07:10 > 0:07:12Formula 1 driver of all time,
0:07:12 > 0:07:16eclipsing a certain Scotsman's 44-year-old record.
0:07:16 > 0:07:21I think Lewis Hamilton is a very good driver indeed.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23I love racing at the moment. I think my only goal
0:07:23 > 0:07:25is really just to continue to try and raise the bar.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28He took my record away by winning four,
0:07:28 > 0:07:30but I had held the record for 44 years,
0:07:30 > 0:07:32so it was due to be changed.
0:07:32 > 0:07:35You can hear the cheers and applause from the Australian crowd,
0:07:35 > 0:07:4080,000 of them, Vettel winning the opening Grand Prix of the season.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43I'm not here to finish second place or finish sixth
0:07:43 > 0:07:44or anywhere below first.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51Hamilton is victorious in Barcelona.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57- There, he brake tested me! What the- BLEEP- is going on?
0:07:57 > 0:07:58CRASH!
0:07:59 > 0:08:02Lewis Hamilton wins the British Grand Prix.
0:08:02 > 0:08:06Mercedes have swapped on the line and it's Bottas third
0:08:06 > 0:08:08and Lewis Hamilton fourth.
0:08:08 > 0:08:10Have I just made a decision that I'm going to
0:08:10 > 0:08:12regret for the rest of my life?
0:08:12 > 0:08:13I started racing when I was eight,
0:08:13 > 0:08:16Dad had four jobs just to keep us carting.
0:08:16 > 0:08:20I think Lewis has a huge gift of natural talent
0:08:20 > 0:08:25and what you've got to do is match that natural talent with what's up
0:08:25 > 0:08:27here, the little grey cells.
0:08:27 > 0:08:29APPLAUSE
0:08:29 > 0:08:31The second half of this season, I think,
0:08:31 > 0:08:35Lewis has driven better than he's ever driven before.
0:08:35 > 0:08:39He's just become the all-time pole position record holder
0:08:39 > 0:08:40in Formula 1.
0:08:40 > 0:08:4269 pole positions for Lewis Hamilton.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44When it rains, that's beautiful for me.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46It's a really good start from Raikkonen
0:08:46 > 0:08:48Kimi Raikkonen in the Ferrari.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50The two Ferraris collide and that has paved
0:08:50 > 0:08:54the way for Lewis Hamilton to win the Singapore Grand Prix of 2017.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59People were talking about it a lot. I remember trying to ignore that.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02I've just got to get in and do the job that I'm ready to do.
0:09:02 > 0:09:04- He hit me deliberately. - Not sure, Lewis.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08Only once this season has he finished outside of the top five,
0:09:08 > 0:09:11but it doesn't matter, because Lewis Hamilton
0:09:11 > 0:09:13is a four-time Formula 1 world champion.
0:09:14 > 0:09:18Just so grateful for all your hard work this year. God bless you.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20I think the results speak for themselves and ultimately
0:09:20 > 0:09:24when people then remind me that I'm the most successful British
0:09:24 > 0:09:26driver to have ever lived, then that's, er...
0:09:26 > 0:09:28how can you describe it?
0:09:28 > 0:09:32To be nominated for Sports Personality Of The Year,
0:09:32 > 0:09:33it's something very special.
0:09:33 > 0:09:37It's a wonderful night and it's just a nice thing to win.
0:09:37 > 0:09:41Every single championship that I've competed in, it's not been easy
0:09:41 > 0:09:45to face the down days that you have but still I rise.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48From a slow start, excuse the pun,
0:09:48 > 0:09:50it's been a fantastic year for Lewis Hamilton.
0:09:50 > 0:09:52He's broken so many records,
0:09:52 > 0:09:54perhaps - and hearing Sir Jackie there talk about it -
0:09:54 > 0:10:00the most notable is that 44-year record, four Formula 1 titles now.
0:10:00 > 0:10:02It really puts him up amongst the greats.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04Yeah, that's the real deal, only Fangio
0:10:04 > 0:10:07and Schumacher have won more, because Schumacher has won seven.
0:10:07 > 0:10:08Fangio - he could equal if he wins one more.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10I think even more impressive is he's got the most
0:10:10 > 0:10:13pole positions of anyone, all time, of Formula 1.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16Beat Schumacher's record which was very impressive.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18He's also the only person on this list, on the shortlist,
0:10:18 > 0:10:20whose actually won Sports Personality Of The Year
0:10:20 > 0:10:23before and only four people have ever won it
0:10:23 > 0:10:25more than once. Can you name who those are?
0:10:25 > 0:10:27I'm going to have little questions for you throughout this evening.
0:10:27 > 0:10:29Well, I know that Formula 1 is -
0:10:29 > 0:10:33- unless you want answer this first, Tom - is very successful.- It is.
0:10:33 > 0:10:35- Damon Hill.- Damon Hill won it twice. - Nigel Mansell.
0:10:35 > 0:10:39- Nigel Mansell won it twice.- I think I was only alive for Murray.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42- He won it three times. - Three times.- OK, OK, yeah.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45There's only one other person who's won it twice. Shall I let you know?
0:10:45 > 0:10:47- Henry Cooper.- Sir Henry Cooper. Absolutely right.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49So he'd only be the fifth person on that list
0:10:49 > 0:10:52- if he were to win this.- Interesting that Formula 1 does so well,
0:10:52 > 0:10:55- motor racing does so well, isn't it? - It is.- Their fans are galvanised.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58I think it's exactly that. They've got fans who are absolutely adore
0:10:58 > 0:11:00Formula 1, so when they've got someone who is a world champion
0:11:00 > 0:11:03they have a very, very good chance of winning the title.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05Now, strangely, there are parallels, I feel, with your career.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08- Not only is it high speed, dangerous...- Yes.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11..risky and obviously you do it with a lot less protection around you...
0:11:11 > 0:11:13- That's true. - ..you both started your careers
0:11:13 > 0:11:16incredibly young, came to prominence at a young age,
0:11:16 > 0:11:18what is it like when there's that level of expectation on you?
0:11:18 > 0:11:20I mean, there's always lots of pressure,
0:11:20 > 0:11:23especially if you're successful at a young age, but you don't have
0:11:23 > 0:11:26to rise to that expectation or you fall and I think it really just
0:11:26 > 0:11:29comes down to, you just have to put everything into every single
0:11:29 > 0:11:31moment, so you go into a competition with no regrets.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34We are going to miss Mo Farah - what a legend he's been.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36Three Olympic Games, you've been in the same team as him, Tom.
0:11:36 > 0:11:41- What's he like to be around?- I mean, he's just such a great character.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43He's so lovely, especially his family.
0:11:43 > 0:11:46I got to actually meet his family in 2012 and it's just
0:11:46 > 0:11:49so sweet to see how supportive they are of him
0:11:49 > 0:11:52and, you know, he's superhuman, you know, he's won so many medals
0:11:52 > 0:11:55and he's just definitely going to go down in the history books.
0:11:55 > 0:12:00His dedication, his sacrifice, his life has been about running
0:12:00 > 0:12:03and so no wonder he has eclipsed so many of the greats,
0:12:03 > 0:12:05- but who even comes close to him? - I don't think anyone comes close
0:12:05 > 0:12:07in terms of the numbers, but the interesting thing,
0:12:07 > 0:12:10talking about what we're talking about this evening,
0:12:10 > 0:12:12is he's never won Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:12:12 > 0:12:13Third is the best he's ever done.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15There's a few people who've come second twice.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17Sally Gunnell and Denise Lewis both came second twice,
0:12:17 > 0:12:20but two other people who came second twice but never won - Frank Bruno,
0:12:20 > 0:12:22Bobby Charlton as well. Ronnie O'Sullivan never won,
0:12:22 > 0:12:24but Mo Farah, by a mile,
0:12:24 > 0:12:26surely the best British sportsperson
0:12:26 > 0:12:28never to have yet to win this award.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30Let's see if those people who feel he should put their money
0:12:30 > 0:12:33where their mouth is in 2017.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35Now, when you think of British tennis, these days,
0:12:35 > 0:12:37all thoughts turn to Andy Murray, however,
0:12:37 > 0:12:412017 represented a breakthrough year for Johanna Konta.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44It's 40 years since Virginia Wade won both Wimbledon
0:12:44 > 0:12:46and Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:12:46 > 0:12:47Four decades later,
0:12:47 > 0:12:51Jo gripped the nation as she came oh so close.
0:12:51 > 0:12:55Wimbledon is special - to play here,
0:12:55 > 0:12:58to win here, even just to be here, it's a privilege.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01There's a thrill walking through the gates at Wimbledon.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04You just can't wait to get on court.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07I find it the most relaxing and actually the most tranquil
0:13:07 > 0:13:11out of all the slams. It really feels all about the game.
0:13:11 > 0:13:13Johanna Konta - high home hopes for her.
0:13:13 > 0:13:17She moves through to the second round with little fuss.
0:13:17 > 0:13:21She's very level-headed, she handles everything very, very well.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24Yeah, got it now.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26What a battle! Konta through
0:13:26 > 0:13:29to the third round for the very first time.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32It's such an ultimate goal, Wimbledon,
0:13:32 > 0:13:34especially if you are British.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37- Aggh!- Come on!
0:13:37 > 0:13:41Jo Konta, three down, four to go.
0:13:41 > 0:13:43The Briton never experienced expectation
0:13:43 > 0:13:48like she's experiencing in this part of the world at the moment.
0:13:48 > 0:13:52Jo Konta - Wimbledon quarterfinalist.
0:13:53 > 0:13:55You feel like you're in this big stadium of noise
0:13:55 > 0:13:57at that moment when you walk out.
0:13:57 > 0:14:02I definitely felt the investment from the nation at the time
0:14:02 > 0:14:05and definitely felt their desire and their want for me to do well.
0:14:07 > 0:14:10It's over. British tennis history is made.
0:14:12 > 0:14:15We've not had a day like this for 39 years,
0:14:15 > 0:14:18a British woman in the semifinals of Wimbledon.
0:14:18 > 0:14:21I was lucky enough to be sitting in the front seat
0:14:21 > 0:14:22of the royal box for that match.
0:14:22 > 0:14:26As a young girl, you dream about these matches.
0:14:26 > 0:14:30So just about set - Venus Williams against Johanna Konta.
0:14:30 > 0:14:34They want it to go on, this dream for Johanna Konta
0:14:34 > 0:14:36and the pressure grows.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41There it is. Venus Williams!
0:14:41 > 0:14:45For Konta, it ends here and what a run she has had.
0:14:45 > 0:14:47It was definitely a highlight of my career so far.
0:14:47 > 0:14:51It didn't take me by surprise, the level that she played,
0:14:51 > 0:14:54but I definitely wished that didn't play as well she did on the day.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58It was definitely something that I look back on
0:14:58 > 0:15:01with incredible amount of fondness.
0:15:01 > 0:15:05The Sports Personality of 1977 is Virginia Wade.
0:15:05 > 0:15:08The BBC Sports Personality Of The Year is more than
0:15:08 > 0:15:12icing on the cake, it's a really meaningful award.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15Honestly, just to be nominated is a privilege.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19It's pretty impressive, all those athletes, what they've achieved
0:15:19 > 0:15:22this year and I just feel very lucky to be counted alongside them.
0:15:24 > 0:15:28Konta made her mark at Wimbledon this summer, but north of the Thames
0:15:28 > 0:15:31at Lord's, one woman delivered the unthinkable.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34She delivered a performance which no English cricketer
0:15:34 > 0:15:35had ever managed before.
0:15:35 > 0:15:39Bowler Anya Shrubsole steered the women's England cricket team
0:15:39 > 0:15:41to victory in the World Cup final.
0:15:41 > 0:15:46We're almost ready to get under way, this ICC women's World Cup final.
0:15:46 > 0:15:48Wide of the crease she comes in.
0:15:48 > 0:15:52It's driven over the head of mid-off. Smiles on the Indian bench.
0:15:52 > 0:15:54The thing about England and World Cups across all
0:15:54 > 0:15:57the different sports, we have a habit of not delivering
0:15:57 > 0:15:58and India needed something like 36
0:15:58 > 0:16:00off 40-odd deliveries, they were strolling.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03She'd have been walking back to her mark thinking, "Oh, no."
0:16:03 > 0:16:06Everyone will admit, even us on the field, they were the favourites
0:16:06 > 0:16:07for most of the way through that innings.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10Shrubsole comes in, slow delivery, big appeal for LBW
0:16:10 > 0:16:13and it's given. Shrubsole makes the breakthrough.
0:16:13 > 0:16:15That was probably the wicket that gave us a look-in.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17You always think if you get one wicket,
0:16:17 > 0:16:19then you could potentially get two or three
0:16:19 > 0:16:21and then suddenly the pressure is right back on the Indians.
0:16:21 > 0:16:23Goswami struggling there.
0:16:23 > 0:16:26And Shrubsole picks up her fourth wicket. What a spell this is.
0:16:26 > 0:16:29For me at that point, it was about making things as simple
0:16:29 > 0:16:33as I possibly could, so I decided to bowl two balls basically
0:16:33 > 0:16:36and make sure that I absolutely nailed those.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39Anya had that one chance to deliver something special
0:16:39 > 0:16:41and she certainly did that.
0:16:41 > 0:16:45Shrubsole in now and bowls her - six wickets for Anya Shrubsole!
0:16:45 > 0:16:48England's hero, England win the World Cup
0:16:48 > 0:16:50in front of a packed house at Lord's.
0:16:50 > 0:16:53For all the hard work that we've put in as a team to come to fruition
0:16:53 > 0:16:55and be world champions
0:16:55 > 0:16:58is a feeling that is pretty impossible to describe.
0:16:58 > 0:17:02For me, it was like a football team being two goals down
0:17:02 > 0:17:04with ten minutes to go. England should have lost that game,
0:17:04 > 0:17:07she got the wickets and England end up winning the game.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10You know, if that had been an England footballer, Dele Alli
0:17:10 > 0:17:12would have been front page, he'd have had his own open-top bus ride.
0:17:12 > 0:17:15Anya delivered exactly that.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18All I try and do is just contribute towards England winning games,
0:17:18 > 0:17:20so to walk away and know that you've done that,
0:17:20 > 0:17:22is a pretty special feeling.
0:17:22 > 0:17:23I've got a seven-year-old daughter
0:17:23 > 0:17:25who couldn't keep her eyes off the final.
0:17:25 > 0:17:28She'd never ever mentioned to me about playing cricket
0:17:28 > 0:17:30and since then, she's been getting her older brother
0:17:30 > 0:17:32to throw balls to her in the garden.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34She joined the local cricket club
0:17:34 > 0:17:37and I think in years gone by, it'll probably...
0:17:37 > 0:17:41The 2005 moment, you know, the amount of kids now that come
0:17:41 > 0:17:43and say, "I only to play cricket
0:17:43 > 0:17:45"or I watch cricket because of 2005."
0:17:45 > 0:17:48I think that probably means more now than actually the urn.
0:17:48 > 0:17:53I hope they realise that they've motivated and given
0:17:53 > 0:17:56an opportunity to many kids to go and pick up a bat and ball.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59Ladies and gentlemen, England's Ashes heroes.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02I think it really shows just where women's cricket is
0:18:02 > 0:18:06and how far it's come that you've got a female cricketer
0:18:06 > 0:18:09who's on the shortlist for Sports Personality,
0:18:09 > 0:18:11so it's a huge honour for me,
0:18:11 > 0:18:16but also a representation of all the work that's been done by the team.
0:18:17 > 0:18:19What a performance, what a moment.
0:18:19 > 0:18:21One of my favourite of the summer, I think,
0:18:21 > 0:18:24and the first time a female cricketer has ever been on this list
0:18:24 > 0:18:26and Michael Vaughan alluded to it there,
0:18:26 > 0:18:28it feels like a pivotal moment.
0:18:28 > 0:18:32I mean, yeah, imagine being a young girl and seeing that,
0:18:32 > 0:18:36you know, a team performing in front of a sell-out crowd,
0:18:36 > 0:18:40like, you can achieve anything and it's really exciting see
0:18:40 > 0:18:43women's cricket come as far as it has and it's really exciting to
0:18:43 > 0:18:46think, that she was, back in 2001,
0:18:46 > 0:18:49the little girl that went to Lord's and now she's playing and she's...
0:18:49 > 0:18:51That was a lovely tweet, wasn't it?
0:18:51 > 0:18:53From her dad and her looking over the boundary
0:18:53 > 0:18:55and saying she wanted to play in a World Cup there.
0:18:55 > 0:18:58I mean, incredible, I mean, quite apart from gender,
0:18:58 > 0:19:00this is what Sports Personality is all about
0:19:00 > 0:19:03and she was put under the greatest pressure of her career
0:19:03 > 0:19:05and gave the greatest performance of her career
0:19:05 > 0:19:07and that's what being a sportsperson is.
0:19:07 > 0:19:09Tough for a cricketer maybe to win Sports Personality.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13Three cricketers have been in the top three in the last 40 years,
0:19:13 > 0:19:17- two of them won. Botham.- Botham, yeah.- Freddie Flintoff.- Yeah.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19And a third place for Graham Gooch,
0:19:19 > 0:19:22but I think what an incredible performance from Anya Shrubsole.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25She said...she tweeted, "I'm very humbled to be on this list,"
0:19:25 > 0:19:29and, you know, goodness me, she's earned her place on that list.
0:19:29 > 0:19:32Well, if Anya Shrubsole is a brilliant individual
0:19:32 > 0:19:36in a great team, Johanna Konta is very much out there on her own
0:19:36 > 0:19:37on Centre Court in the summer,
0:19:37 > 0:19:40with the eyes and expectations of a nation.
0:19:40 > 0:19:41We've been so used to putting all our hopes
0:19:41 > 0:19:44on Andy Murray's shoulders, but she had a wonderful Wimbledon
0:19:44 > 0:19:48and made history. It's been a long, long time, Richard. How long?
0:19:48 > 0:19:50Well, '77 was the last time we had a woman in the semifinals at
0:19:50 > 0:19:53Wimbledon which was Virginia Wade, of course, who went on to win it.
0:19:53 > 0:19:55I suspect Johanna Konta will win it at some point.
0:19:55 > 0:19:58It would be lovely if she did and the interesting thing,
0:19:58 > 0:20:00I think, in TV terms is the ratings which were enormous.
0:20:00 > 0:20:02Like, nearly 7.5 million people
0:20:02 > 0:20:04watching that Johanna Konta quarterfinal against Halep
0:20:04 > 0:20:07and that was the biggest ratings of any match at Wimbledon.
0:20:07 > 0:20:08Bigger than the men's final,
0:20:08 > 0:20:10bigger than the Murray games, bigger than Nadal.
0:20:10 > 0:20:13Bigger than EastEnders so, you know, it's the real deal.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15People really took to her. I think we're going to see a lot more
0:20:15 > 0:20:17of her personality as well over the next few years.
0:20:17 > 0:20:18I think the British public
0:20:18 > 0:20:21are really going to fall in love with Johanna Konta.
0:20:21 > 0:20:23- And maybe on the Bake Off as well with her love for baking.- Yeah.
0:20:23 > 0:20:26Seems to be a theme amongst quite a lot of athletes these days...
0:20:26 > 0:20:28- We like sweet treats. - Oh, you're a baking fan?
0:20:28 > 0:20:30I'm a big baking fan and I saw on Instagram actually she's got
0:20:30 > 0:20:33the same apron that I do, the Union Jack one.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36- Do you have to be an Olympian? - Yeah, I think so.- Now, that...
0:20:36 > 0:20:37- I think so.- I like a fact.
0:20:37 > 0:20:39- I'm just going to write that down. - LAUGHTER
0:20:39 > 0:20:41- It might come up on Pointless soon.- Yep.
0:20:41 > 0:20:44Now, Sports Personality Of The Year not only celebrates the achievements
0:20:44 > 0:20:48of the year, it also looks back on the achievements of a lifetime.
0:20:48 > 0:20:50The gaffer, Sir Bobby Robson.
0:20:50 > 0:20:53One of the greatest evenings of my life.
0:20:53 > 0:20:54George Best.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56Thank you very much, it's wonderful to be here.
0:20:56 > 0:21:00This year's lifetime achievement, the winner is Martina Navratilova.
0:21:00 > 0:21:04This year's lifetime achievement award goes to Sir Bobby Charlton.
0:21:04 > 0:21:06Absolutely knocked out with this.
0:21:06 > 0:21:08Severiano Ballesteros.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10Thank you very much to everyone.
0:21:11 > 0:21:14Make the sacrifices, because it's worth it.
0:21:14 > 0:21:15Sir Chris Hoy.
0:21:16 > 0:21:18Thank you so much.
0:21:20 > 0:21:24Sir Chris Hoy joining a long list of sporting luminaries there.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27From cycling on the boards to cycling on the roads and this year
0:21:27 > 0:21:30was another record-breaking year for Chris Froome.
0:21:30 > 0:21:31A fourth yellow jersey was followed
0:21:31 > 0:21:34by the red jersey of the Vuelta a Espana.
0:21:34 > 0:21:37Here to tell us about his story is Sir Chris Hoy,
0:21:37 > 0:21:40who won SPOTY the last time we were here in Liverpool.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43The 2008 season was the dream season, really.
0:21:43 > 0:21:46I won triple gold in Beijing, which was the dream, but I never really
0:21:46 > 0:21:49believed it was going to happen and to finish the year
0:21:49 > 0:21:51with the Sports Personality Trophy was the cherry
0:21:51 > 0:21:53on top of the icing on top of the cake.
0:21:53 > 0:21:57The BBC Sports Personality Of The Year 2008 is...
0:21:57 > 0:21:58Chris Hoy.
0:21:58 > 0:22:00CHEERING
0:22:00 > 0:22:03And then they read my name out and it was brilliant, but also
0:22:03 > 0:22:05oh, my God, I'm going to have to think of something to say now!
0:22:05 > 0:22:07I sort of walked up really slowly thinking,
0:22:07 > 0:22:08"Right, don't forget anybody."
0:22:10 > 0:22:13I would say this year, Chris Froome's sporting achievements
0:22:13 > 0:22:15rank alongside anybody's in any sport.
0:22:15 > 0:22:18Obviously, as a cyclist, I'm biased but I think, you know, he is...
0:22:18 > 0:22:20He could be a worthy winner this year.
0:22:20 > 0:22:23An historic day in world sport as Britain's Chris Froome
0:22:23 > 0:22:26has become the first cyclist to win both the Tour de France
0:22:26 > 0:22:27and Vuelta a Espana titles
0:22:27 > 0:22:30at its current position in the racing calendar.
0:22:30 > 0:22:31You'd be hard pushed not to say
0:22:31 > 0:22:34that he's the greatest grand tour rider of his generation.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37Four times Tour de France champion, Vuelta champion...
0:22:37 > 0:22:40His consistency, the way that he deals with everything
0:22:40 > 0:22:43that's thrown at him in those three-week tours.
0:22:43 > 0:22:45He doesn't seek the limelight,
0:22:45 > 0:22:48he just wants to be the best he can possibly be
0:22:48 > 0:22:51and he has this desire to win, win, win.
0:22:53 > 0:22:562017 for me just has been the final product
0:22:56 > 0:22:57of everything coming together.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59I've won the Tour de France now four times,
0:22:59 > 0:23:03but each time, rolling into Paris, I've welled up with tears.
0:23:03 > 0:23:04It's just so emotional.
0:23:04 > 0:23:09It marks the end of this three-week journey around France
0:23:09 > 0:23:10that you just...
0:23:10 > 0:23:13It feels as if you're just up against all the odds every day.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15It's just an amazing feeling,
0:23:15 > 0:23:18amazing feeling of having won the biggest bike race in the world.
0:23:18 > 0:23:22Chris Froome will take part in this year's Vuelta a Espana.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24Only two other riders in history have won the Tour
0:23:24 > 0:23:27and Vuelta in the same year.
0:23:27 > 0:23:30Normally in grand Tours, you have a few stages in between
0:23:30 > 0:23:32that are for us climbers and GC riders.
0:23:32 > 0:23:33We can sit in the bunch
0:23:33 > 0:23:36and get a little bit of a recovery day, if you like.
0:23:36 > 0:23:39In this year's Vuelta, every single day was just game on.
0:23:39 > 0:23:42This was by far the hardest one I'd ever done,
0:23:42 > 0:23:45so, yeah, I'm extremely grateful to have been able to back it up
0:23:45 > 0:23:46from the Tour de France.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49It's a dream come true. It's just incredible.
0:23:49 > 0:23:51An award like the Sports Personality Of The Year,
0:23:51 > 0:23:55it's an opportunity to be able to reflect on what has been
0:23:55 > 0:23:57and it's not something we do very often.
0:23:57 > 0:24:00For me, it's quite a special time of the year to be able to look
0:24:00 > 0:24:04back on what 2017 has been for me and what it's meant to me.
0:24:04 > 0:24:08Certainly, this year has been, I would say,
0:24:08 > 0:24:10the most amazing season of my career.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15From domination in road cycling to unrivalled consistency
0:24:15 > 0:24:18on a motorbike. Northern Ireland's Jonathan Rea
0:24:18 > 0:24:22won his third consecutive World Superbike title this year.
0:24:22 > 0:24:24It's simply never been done before.
0:24:28 > 0:24:30I sort of got hooked on bikes watching my dad.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33I was wanting to polish the wheels for my dad's bike
0:24:33 > 0:24:35and like I see my son now wanting to get involved.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38I had a 50cc motocross bike and it must have been
0:24:38 > 0:24:41crossing at the time where my grandfather passed away and
0:24:41 > 0:24:45he was always telling me that "One day, you'll be world champion, son."
0:24:46 > 0:24:50Johnny Rea, three times world champion in consecutive years.
0:24:50 > 0:24:5480% podium rate in the three years that he's done it, 50% win rate.
0:24:54 > 0:24:57It's unheard of. I mean, Johnny Rea won more races this year
0:24:57 > 0:25:00than I won in my whole career.
0:25:00 > 0:25:02He just ticks every box for me, to be honest.
0:25:02 > 0:25:06Consistency, aggression, wet weather riding.
0:25:06 > 0:25:07That's the key, to be very fast
0:25:07 > 0:25:10and very consistent and you win championships.
0:25:10 > 0:25:11It's not rocket science.
0:25:13 > 0:25:15The key to the year was the start of the season,
0:25:15 > 0:25:18but there's been so many keys to the year. I've...
0:25:18 > 0:25:20I've had so many race wins this year
0:25:20 > 0:25:23that it's kind of just made the championship.
0:25:23 > 0:25:25I didn't ever have to think about the championship
0:25:25 > 0:25:26from a points point of view.
0:25:28 > 0:25:30I was confident going to Donington this year
0:25:30 > 0:25:33and in race one I was doing my job at the front
0:25:33 > 0:25:35and suddenly my tyre started losing pressure.
0:25:35 > 0:25:39All of a sudden, the bike went from underneath me
0:25:39 > 0:25:41going down the fastest part of the circuit.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45But I made amends for it the next day by going out
0:25:45 > 0:25:49and, you know, putting a really, really strong race win in
0:25:49 > 0:25:51and changed the dynamic of the season.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56As soon as the lights went out on the race, I was...
0:25:56 > 0:25:58I was ready to make it mine
0:25:58 > 0:26:01and that is the best way I've won the championship yet.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03To win one is amazing, really,
0:26:03 > 0:26:06so to win three is incredible. It really is.
0:26:06 > 0:26:09Obviously, Carl Fogarty holds the record, four times champion.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Johnny could be six, seven, eight.
0:26:11 > 0:26:13I've held the record for 20 years, I think it is.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16That's long enough to hold a record. Records are made for breaking and...
0:26:16 > 0:26:17No, I couldn't think of anyone better
0:26:17 > 0:26:19for it to go to than Jonathan.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21I'm still with the best team in the championship,
0:26:21 > 0:26:23I'm still with the best manufacturer in the championship,
0:26:23 > 0:26:26I'm still going to be the strongest rider in the championship,
0:26:26 > 0:26:29so, yeah, I don't see the train slowing down any time soon.
0:26:29 > 0:26:31Come on in and join the party, please.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34World Superbike champion James Toseland.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38A pal of mine, James Toseland, got nominated in 2007.
0:26:38 > 0:26:41I remember I actually watched that night
0:26:41 > 0:26:43and he rode onto the stage and played the piano.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46It's a really special evening of a lot of people
0:26:46 > 0:26:49and the BBC recognising what you've achieved.
0:26:49 > 0:26:51I'd love to ride onto the stage,
0:26:51 > 0:26:53but I'm definitely not playing the piano.
0:26:55 > 0:26:58- Well, that's going to be some entrance on Sunday.- Yeah.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00Motorcycling is very, very big in Northern Ireland.
0:27:00 > 0:27:01Huge in Northern Ireland.
0:27:01 > 0:27:03In fact, in 2015, they held a poll
0:27:03 > 0:27:06to find Northern Ireland's greatest ever sportsperson.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08And, yeah, they've had some amazing sports people.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10I'll tell you who didn't win - George Best didn't win.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13- Dame Mary Peters?- Dame Mary Peters didn't win, Rory McIlroy didn't win.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16It was a road bike racer, Joey Dunlop.
0:27:16 > 0:27:18The greatest sportsman in Northern Irish history,
0:27:18 > 0:27:22and Johnny Rea is a great heir to that legacy, I have to say.
0:27:22 > 0:27:24Is there something about the roads, do you think,
0:27:24 > 0:27:27- that has cultivated this? - I guess there must be, yes.
0:27:27 > 0:27:29No stats on the roads?
0:27:29 > 0:27:32Well, I tell you what, I mean, Johnny Rea, it's meaningless to him
0:27:32 > 0:27:34because he can't actually ride a bike on the road.
0:27:34 > 0:27:35He doesn't have a licence.
0:27:35 > 0:27:37- LAUGHTER - Imagine!
0:27:37 > 0:27:39Really, he literally is only allowed to drive on private tracks.
0:27:39 > 0:27:43- He's got no...- Just as well he's good at that.- Yeah, isn't it?
0:27:43 > 0:27:48And he is going at incredible speeds. 184mph.
0:27:48 > 0:27:52Very close, in fact, his 0-60 in 3.12 seconds to the speed
0:27:52 > 0:27:53that you would be entering the water,
0:27:53 > 0:27:56- but you're just wearing budgie smugglers.- I know!
0:27:56 > 0:28:00- We do 1.8 seconds, 0-35 miles per hour, so it's pretty quick.- Wow!
0:28:00 > 0:28:02Faster than a motorbike. You must have big G force as well,
0:28:02 > 0:28:05- presumably, when you're doing the... - Yeah, exactly. It was actually...
0:28:05 > 0:28:07- The thing!- Yeah.- You know, the thing. The thing, Gabby.
0:28:07 > 0:28:10- Sorry, I'm... - Doing the somersault and twists.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13- I'm an intellectual diving judge. - Exactly. Yeah, of course.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16Yeah, the G force that we experience when we're spinning around,
0:28:16 > 0:28:19although it's for shorter periods of time, is actually more than
0:28:19 > 0:28:21what it is in Formula 1 and for Superbike racing too.
0:28:21 > 0:28:24Now, what's interesting about Chris Froome's year is
0:28:24 > 0:28:27not his fourth Tour de France, it's that that was almost a warm up
0:28:27 > 0:28:30for him to the Vuelta, which was the aim of the season.
0:28:30 > 0:28:32How do you do that as an athlete?
0:28:32 > 0:28:35You know, you're peaking and trying to peak at the right time
0:28:35 > 0:28:37knowing when you have to be at your very best.
0:28:37 > 0:28:41Yeah, I mean, sometimes we have to train through certain competitions
0:28:41 > 0:28:42to get to the peak competition,
0:28:42 > 0:28:45whether it be a World Championships or the Vuelta.
0:28:45 > 0:28:47And when you're training through a competition, sometimes,
0:28:47 > 0:28:49because you don't have the expectation
0:28:49 > 0:28:50of wanting to go out there and win
0:28:50 > 0:28:52and thinking about winning that competition,
0:28:52 > 0:28:55sometimes you just end up doing way better than you first expected to.
0:28:55 > 0:28:58And there's no explanation for it, really,
0:28:58 > 0:29:00- other than the fact Chris Froome is a machine.- Yeah.
0:29:00 > 0:29:02He's absolutely incredible.
0:29:02 > 0:29:04It's like when you used the Olympics as a warm up for Splash.
0:29:04 > 0:29:07- Exactly!- It's exactly that, isn't it?
0:29:07 > 0:29:09- You knew when you had to peak. - Yeah, exactly.
0:29:09 > 0:29:11You get the Olympics out the way and then you get into Splash.
0:29:11 > 0:29:14But, yeah, he is a machine and, you know, to win those two events
0:29:14 > 0:29:16and they're much closer together than they used to be,
0:29:16 > 0:29:17the Vuelta and the Tour de France,
0:29:17 > 0:29:21he essentially went John O'Groats to Land's End
0:29:21 > 0:29:24five times in a row in just over a week
0:29:24 > 0:29:27is what he did in those two events. Won both of them.
0:29:27 > 0:29:29It's an incredible achievement. If he's ever going to win
0:29:29 > 0:29:32Sports Personality Of The Year, you'd think it would be this year.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35Only four cyclists have ever won, but three of them have been
0:29:35 > 0:29:38in the last ten years, so Britain's love of cycling is really peaking.
0:29:38 > 0:29:41Well, who says nice guys can't win?
0:29:41 > 0:29:44Our next contender is one of the nicest and nastiest.
0:29:44 > 0:29:49Big AJ might come over as a gentle giant, but he can pack a punch.
0:29:49 > 0:29:51Seconds out for Anthony Joshua.
0:29:52 > 0:29:562017 ranks in the sense that the hard work just starts now.
0:29:56 > 0:29:58When your idols become your rivals,
0:29:58 > 0:30:02you have to kind of disregard all the respect that you have for them.
0:30:02 > 0:30:05Train hard, go through your toughest battles under the dark lights
0:30:05 > 0:30:08so you can shine under the bright lights.
0:30:08 > 0:30:11I believe it's the biggest fight in British boxing history.
0:30:11 > 0:30:13I feel totally obsessed.
0:30:13 > 0:30:14It was a huge fight
0:30:14 > 0:30:16and it's a lot of weight to put on somebody's shoulders.
0:30:16 > 0:30:20Klitschko is very respectful, and I took inspiration from Klitschko,
0:30:20 > 0:30:22so the press conference wasn't the most entertaining
0:30:22 > 0:30:25in terms of flipping tables and disrespecting each other,
0:30:25 > 0:30:27but it showed that's not where it matters.
0:30:27 > 0:30:28Where it matters is in the ring.
0:30:28 > 0:30:29And we are underway.
0:30:29 > 0:30:32Anthony Joshua just taken a steam hammer of a right-hand
0:30:32 > 0:30:35and Wladimir Klitschko is not reacting well.
0:30:35 > 0:30:36This is a toe-to-toe slugfest.
0:30:36 > 0:30:38Wobbles down to the canvas.
0:30:38 > 0:30:40What a right-hand!
0:30:40 > 0:30:41And Anthony Joshua is down.
0:30:41 > 0:30:43Wladimir Klitschko in desperate trouble
0:30:43 > 0:30:46and referee David Fields has stepped in.
0:30:46 > 0:30:48Anthony Joshua has stopped his man.
0:30:48 > 0:30:51Firstly, I thought it was a great fight. I think, you know,
0:30:51 > 0:30:54you had all the ingredients you need in a great fight. There's drama.
0:30:54 > 0:30:55You know, they both went down.
0:30:55 > 0:30:58AJ would never have been in that sort of fight.
0:30:58 > 0:31:00When you're fighting against an opponent
0:31:00 > 0:31:02like Klitschko, Klitschko has been there, he's done it.
0:31:02 > 0:31:05So a lot of people are going to see what's going to happen
0:31:05 > 0:31:07when his back's against the ropes.
0:31:07 > 0:31:08No fight is won easily.
0:31:08 > 0:31:11I was two inches away from losing and I don't forget...
0:31:11 > 0:31:13..the good and the bad that come with the sport.
0:31:13 > 0:31:17You know, under them lights, in front of all them tens of thousands,
0:31:17 > 0:31:20when you get hit on the chin and you go down,
0:31:20 > 0:31:22that's something that just comes from instinct.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25Boxing's a great sport because you come back,
0:31:25 > 0:31:29you defend yourself, you give what you can and after, win or lose,
0:31:29 > 0:31:31you shake hands and show a lot of respect to your opponent.
0:31:31 > 0:31:34He knows that he's still learning and I love that.
0:31:34 > 0:31:36You know, we never stop learning.
0:31:36 > 0:31:38Even when I retired at 37, I was still learning.
0:31:38 > 0:31:39Still trying to learn from my mistakes
0:31:39 > 0:31:41because we all make mistakes.
0:31:41 > 0:31:43I've seen the different sides of the table,
0:31:43 > 0:31:46but both I can look at in a positive light
0:31:46 > 0:31:51because both shape a person and both make a person who they are today.
0:31:51 > 0:31:53If it wasn't for boxing, I don't know where I would be.
0:31:53 > 0:31:56It can give people a life and better them as a person.
0:31:56 > 0:32:01The 2007 BBC Sports Personality Of The Year is Joe Calzaghe.
0:32:02 > 0:32:04Look at what AJ has done.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06You know, at the end of the day, turned his life around.
0:32:06 > 0:32:08He's a role model for many people.
0:32:08 > 0:32:12I've given a lot of myself to, like, the public and what I do,
0:32:12 > 0:32:15what I've done wrong and how I've, you know,
0:32:15 > 0:32:18found sport and what it's done for me.
0:32:18 > 0:32:22And to be nominated kind of reflects that journey that I've been on
0:32:22 > 0:32:24and people are relating to it and understanding
0:32:24 > 0:32:28where I'm coming from, so it's a real blessing and it's an honour.
0:32:28 > 0:32:30It's fight night all right.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33From the champion in the ring to the champion of the mat.
0:32:33 > 0:32:36Liverpool local lass Bianca Walkden loves a scrap.
0:32:36 > 0:32:37She's good at it too.
0:32:37 > 0:32:40This year, she became the two-time tae kwon do world champion.
0:32:41 > 0:32:44Tae kwon do's a really good martial arts.
0:32:44 > 0:32:45It requires, like, a lot of discipline,
0:32:45 > 0:32:48a lot of respect for your opponent because you're going out there
0:32:48 > 0:32:51and you're trying to kill each other, basically, like, for the win.
0:32:51 > 0:32:53Like, in the heavyweight girls, she is,
0:32:53 > 0:32:54like, the most agile out of anybody,
0:32:54 > 0:32:57so she's, like, lean, she's ripped.
0:32:57 > 0:32:59You know, I take her kicks and it hurts,
0:32:59 > 0:33:01like, sometimes my ribs are killing for ages.
0:33:06 > 0:33:08I started tae kwon do when I was 11 years old.
0:33:08 > 0:33:10As soon as I walked into the gym
0:33:10 > 0:33:13and everyone was kicking each other, shouting at each other, trying
0:33:13 > 0:33:17to knock each other out and I think, like, it just attracted me
0:33:17 > 0:33:19there and then and here I am now.
0:33:23 > 0:33:26Bianca is a very, very bubbly person.
0:33:26 > 0:33:27She's lovable to be around.
0:33:27 > 0:33:30And she was always beating her older sister up, to be fair,
0:33:30 > 0:33:34practising, so it was in her to become a fighter.
0:33:34 > 0:33:38She's a big role model to women in her sport.
0:33:38 > 0:33:40They all really look up to her.
0:33:40 > 0:33:43Yeah, what Bianca's achieved is absolutely phenomenal.
0:33:43 > 0:33:46She's had a long, tough journey.
0:33:46 > 0:33:48She had two ACL reconstructions.
0:33:48 > 0:33:52In the past five years, I missed a home Olympics.
0:33:52 > 0:33:54I've had to get eight screws in my knees
0:33:54 > 0:33:58and get it all reconstructed, like, basically start again and,
0:33:58 > 0:34:01yeah, it hasn't been an easy road for me to do, but that's
0:34:01 > 0:34:05my motto now, like, to die trying and to never regret anything.
0:34:05 > 0:34:07It's super hard to win the World Championships once.
0:34:07 > 0:34:10You know, I've never won the worlds, so it's ridiculously hard.
0:34:10 > 0:34:14- COMMENTATOR:- Six minutes to decide who will be world champion.
0:34:14 > 0:34:18I was just so focused, like, walking in. Didn't think of nothing.
0:34:18 > 0:34:20And then as soon as I got to the middle of the court
0:34:20 > 0:34:23and the ref said go, I don't think I even blinked.
0:34:23 > 0:34:26I just kicked and I scored instantly.
0:34:26 > 0:34:28Walkden in blue. Fires in straightaway.
0:34:28 > 0:34:29Body shot straight out the blocks.
0:34:29 > 0:34:33From that one kick, I thought, "I'm going to win this."
0:34:33 > 0:34:36Bianca Walkden, dominating and owning the centre of the mat.
0:34:36 > 0:34:39Walkden shuffles around well, great footwork.
0:34:41 > 0:34:45Bianca Walkden, double world champion.
0:34:45 > 0:34:46What a performer.
0:34:46 > 0:34:48For her to do it back-to-back is phenomenal.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51I don't think many people in the sport have done it.
0:34:51 > 0:34:55Yeah, I did well that day! I did fight really well.
0:34:55 > 0:34:58I showed, like, I didn't win it by a fluke.
0:34:58 > 0:35:01It was nice to come out and be like, "Yeah, I did the job."
0:35:02 > 0:35:05It's a massive achievement for me to be nominated for SPOTY
0:35:05 > 0:35:08and I'm so honoured, like, to be recognised
0:35:08 > 0:35:10with all them great athletes.
0:35:10 > 0:35:12It's fantastic.
0:35:12 > 0:35:14Scousers can't let me come last!
0:35:15 > 0:35:18Now, Richard, there's a few firsts for Bianca Walkden.
0:35:18 > 0:35:19Yeah, absolutely. I mean, firstly,
0:35:19 > 0:35:21she's the first tae kwon do practitioner -
0:35:21 > 0:35:23which is what you call someone who does tae kwon do -
0:35:23 > 0:35:25first one ever to be nominated,
0:35:25 > 0:35:28so it's amazing for people to see this sport and also to see her.
0:35:28 > 0:35:29She's absolutely incredible.
0:35:29 > 0:35:32But I was looking through to see which sports have never won
0:35:32 > 0:35:34Sports Personality Of The Year. There's only three
0:35:34 > 0:35:36big British sports, I think, that have never won.
0:35:36 > 0:35:38- Darts has never won. - Gymnastics has definitely never won.
0:35:38 > 0:35:40Gymnastics has never won. Rugby league has never won.
0:35:40 > 0:35:42They've had a second place with Kevin Sinfield.
0:35:42 > 0:35:46Gymnastics has only... Third is the best a gymnast has ever finished.
0:35:46 > 0:35:47Do you know who that would be?
0:35:47 > 0:35:49- Tweddle, right? - Beth Tweddle came third.
0:35:49 > 0:35:51And darts, Phil Taylor has come second.
0:35:51 > 0:35:54And, of course, she lives with double Olympic champion Jade Jones.
0:35:54 > 0:35:56What's that like when you're with somebody who is living
0:35:56 > 0:35:58and breathing the sport you're competing in?
0:35:58 > 0:36:02I think it's something good to have a team-mate live with you
0:36:02 > 0:36:05because if you have someone that is understanding the commitment,
0:36:05 > 0:36:07the dedication, having to eat the right things,
0:36:07 > 0:36:09making sure you're going to bed at the right time,
0:36:09 > 0:36:12those little things are really make a massive difference
0:36:12 > 0:36:14because if you're living with someone who doesn't understand sport
0:36:14 > 0:36:17then you're not going to give yourself the best chance.
0:36:17 > 0:36:19- Have you ever done that? - Well, I actually lived...
0:36:19 > 0:36:20Just before Rio, my synchro partner, Dan,
0:36:20 > 0:36:22moved in with me for six weeks before we left.
0:36:22 > 0:36:25It really does help you build a dynamic as well
0:36:25 > 0:36:27to get past just talking about the sport.
0:36:27 > 0:36:29You can actually talk about other things.
0:36:29 > 0:36:30- So you live with a synchro partner?- Yes.
0:36:30 > 0:36:32I would love to have seen that at breakfast.
0:36:32 > 0:36:35- It must have been like that Morecambe and Wise sketch.- Exactly.
0:36:35 > 0:36:37- The two of you... - Eat our eggs at the same time.
0:36:37 > 0:36:39Of course, a local lass, she's going to get a wonderful reception.
0:36:39 > 0:36:43- Absolutely.- So, Anthony Joshua, what a year it's been for him.
0:36:43 > 0:36:45Is he the hardest man on the planet?
0:36:45 > 0:36:46Is it possible to quantify that?
0:36:46 > 0:36:49Er, well, it's possible to quantify how hard he can punch.
0:36:49 > 0:36:53He can punch at 5,000 Newtons. If you know what... This is roughly...
0:36:53 > 0:36:57- That's, like, four Newtons. - Oh!- So 5,000 is quite hard.
0:36:57 > 0:37:00No, he is. One thing you can quantify, if he wins, Joshua,
0:37:00 > 0:37:02he'll be the tallest ever winner
0:37:02 > 0:37:03of Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:37:03 > 0:37:05- Wow!- A subject close to my heart.
0:37:05 > 0:37:07He's one metre 98.
0:37:07 > 0:37:09And it was, of course, the biggest post-war
0:37:09 > 0:37:11attendance at a boxing match of 90,000.
0:37:11 > 0:37:14He certainly has global reach in his fan base, doesn't he?
0:37:14 > 0:37:16And it's particularly kicking off on social media as well.
0:37:16 > 0:37:18Being congratulated by boxing greats,
0:37:18 > 0:37:21even Arnold Schwarzenegger and a funny tweet from Stuart Broad
0:37:21 > 0:37:24that actually said Moeen Ali was going to be his next opponent.
0:37:24 > 0:37:26Like, I mean, can you imagine that fight?
0:37:26 > 0:37:27It would be an interesting one.
0:37:27 > 0:37:29Cruel beyond belief, I think.
0:37:29 > 0:37:31I mean, the next fight will be interesting, actually.
0:37:31 > 0:37:34He's got a really good chance of winning this year,
0:37:34 > 0:37:36like lots of people have, but, you know, next year
0:37:36 > 0:37:37if he's fighting Parker and Deontay Wilder,
0:37:37 > 0:37:40if he can win both of those, first person
0:37:40 > 0:37:42to unify the heavyweight division since Lennox Lewis.
0:37:42 > 0:37:47So, you know, the future is very, very bright for Anthony Joshua.
0:37:47 > 0:37:50We saw that future and its potential in 2012, didn't we,
0:37:50 > 0:37:52when he won Olympic gold?
0:37:52 > 0:37:53Did you see much of him in 2012?
0:37:53 > 0:37:55I mean, he's just so nice.
0:37:55 > 0:37:58I remember actually going to EIS for a regular physio appointment
0:37:58 > 0:38:00and he walked out of one of the treatment rooms.
0:38:00 > 0:38:03He is just a massive and he is the definition of the BFG.
0:38:03 > 0:38:05When I met him, I thought he was quite short.
0:38:05 > 0:38:07- LAUGHTER - Oh, yeah. Of course you would. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
0:38:07 > 0:38:11Sports Personality Of The Year has always celebrated young sports stars
0:38:11 > 0:38:14who are growing into sporting greatness.
0:38:14 > 0:38:18This guy has won Young SPOTY three times and joins a long list
0:38:18 > 0:38:22of budding sports stars who have blossomed into sporting legends.
0:38:25 > 0:38:28Wayne Rooney, record-breaker.
0:38:29 > 0:38:31Claudia Fragapane. She's in third.
0:38:34 > 0:38:36The waiting is over.
0:38:44 > 0:38:47My next goal really is to get to the 2008 Olympics.
0:38:51 > 0:38:54What did it mean to win Young Sports Personality Of The Year?
0:38:54 > 0:38:58I mean, it's such an honour to be among the list of such
0:38:58 > 0:39:01amazing sports stars and it seems so long ago now.
0:39:01 > 0:39:04I was only 12 when I won the first time and it was...
0:39:04 > 0:39:06Yeah, I remember my dad telling me
0:39:06 > 0:39:08and it was definitely an emotional time.
0:39:08 > 0:39:10- Three times now. - I know, three times.
0:39:10 > 0:39:12- You're still only 23.- I know.
0:39:12 > 0:39:14Well, from the wonder kid to the comeback kid
0:39:14 > 0:39:17and after being disqualified from all three of her events
0:39:17 > 0:39:21at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, 2017 was a year of redemption for
0:39:21 > 0:39:25three-time world short track speed skating champion Elise Christie.
0:39:25 > 0:39:27We haven't seen a woman deliver gold on ice skates
0:39:27 > 0:39:32since a certain pair Bolero-ed their way into British hearts in 1984.
0:39:32 > 0:39:36Sports Personality Of The Year, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean.
0:39:37 > 0:39:41It was amazing to win Sports Personality Of The Year, but it's
0:39:41 > 0:39:44been a long time since someone from the ice rink has been nominated.
0:39:44 > 0:39:48Elise Christie was a figure skater until the age of 14.
0:39:48 > 0:39:51Then she changed it a speed skating and has never looked back,
0:39:51 > 0:39:55even after a tough winter Olympics in 2014.
0:39:55 > 0:39:56Oh, they've gone down!
0:39:56 > 0:39:58They've all gone down.
0:39:58 > 0:39:59Christie has been penalised.
0:39:59 > 0:40:02I just use my instinct and went for it and, unfortunately,
0:40:02 > 0:40:03you know, now I'm regretting that.
0:40:04 > 0:40:08I can't believe it, Christie's been penalised again.
0:40:08 > 0:40:10Obviously, you know, I found it hard,
0:40:10 > 0:40:13but, you know, I've got to keep just pushing through.
0:40:14 > 0:40:16..and takes Christie out as well.
0:40:17 > 0:40:19I just can't believe it's happened again.
0:40:19 > 0:40:22I've spent all this time training, not to even be given the chance
0:40:22 > 0:40:25to do that final.
0:40:25 > 0:40:28For me at the time, it was such a big loss, you know,
0:40:28 > 0:40:31and then I also knew what everyone else had been saying
0:40:31 > 0:40:32on social media.
0:40:32 > 0:40:35The British speed skater Elise Christie has been the victim
0:40:35 > 0:40:39of online bullying after a tough Winter Olympics in Sochi.
0:40:39 > 0:40:43Everyone was just abusing me online and I just withdrew from everything.
0:40:43 > 0:40:45I just didn't talk to anyone.
0:40:45 > 0:40:49There was nothing anyone could do, I was just so scared and alone.
0:40:50 > 0:40:53I became too scared of losing the medal to win.
0:40:53 > 0:40:58I became this...a bit more timid and picked up medals for a few years.
0:40:58 > 0:41:02I came back for last season and was risking to win
0:41:02 > 0:41:03and not being afraid of failing
0:41:03 > 0:41:06and now I feel I'm very much there in that place.
0:41:06 > 0:41:09It shows a lot of mental strength to come back
0:41:09 > 0:41:11from such a disappointment.
0:41:11 > 0:41:15I think it shows how strong of a person Elise is,
0:41:15 > 0:41:18never mind how strong she is physically, but also mentally.
0:41:18 > 0:41:20Elise Christie!
0:41:20 > 0:41:25MUSIC: Remember The Name by Fort Minor
0:41:35 > 0:41:38The first one I think, you know, was the biggest deal
0:41:38 > 0:41:40cos, obviously, that's it, you've done it,
0:41:40 > 0:41:42you'll always be a world champion
0:41:42 > 0:41:45and I just remember screaming, like, and I never act like that.
0:41:45 > 0:41:48My emotions tend to stay in the box in public.
0:41:48 > 0:41:51It's fantastic that she could win three gold medals,
0:41:51 > 0:41:54to win one is great but to have three,
0:41:54 > 0:41:56what a very talented young lady.
0:41:56 > 0:41:58It was my dream to be world champion for a while
0:41:58 > 0:42:02but I wasn't actually aiming for the overall title yet, that was...
0:42:02 > 0:42:05That was on a different year on the trajectory.
0:42:05 > 0:42:07It was an incredible season.
0:42:07 > 0:42:10What a story and fingers crossed for Elise in a few weeks' time
0:42:10 > 0:42:11at the Winter Olympics.
0:42:11 > 0:42:14Now, from blades on the ice to a blade on the track,
0:42:14 > 0:42:17Jonnie Peacock is the double Paralympic champion.
0:42:17 > 0:42:22He's the Usain Bolt of para-athletics, strictly speaking.
0:42:22 > 0:42:25When I was five, I was quite ill.
0:42:25 > 0:42:27I was covered head to toe in a rash.
0:42:27 > 0:42:29It was meningitis,
0:42:29 > 0:42:32I was rushed into hospital, put into a coma.
0:42:32 > 0:42:34Just before I went to sleep,
0:42:34 > 0:42:39they told my mum that this was possibly going to be the last time
0:42:39 > 0:42:42that she could ever see me, so to perhaps say goodbye.
0:42:43 > 0:42:47She didn't say goodbye, she told me to fight it.
0:42:48 > 0:42:52Luckily, I managed to fight it off.
0:42:52 > 0:42:55We had some blood pressure issues with my leg,
0:42:55 > 0:42:58that's basically why it was dying.
0:42:58 > 0:43:02They realised that the best course going forward would be to amputate.
0:43:02 > 0:43:05As soon as they gave me a leg and I'd learned to walk,
0:43:05 > 0:43:07I was pretty much running.
0:43:07 > 0:43:10I just loved sports so I don't think I would have ever let
0:43:10 > 0:43:12anything hold me back.
0:43:12 > 0:43:13CROWD: Peacock!
0:43:13 > 0:43:15"Peacock, Peacock!" rings around the arena here.
0:43:17 > 0:43:19Peacock striding clear.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22Peacock takes the gold for Britain.
0:43:22 > 0:43:24I think Jonnie is a massive inspiration,
0:43:24 > 0:43:28to be able to do one Paralympics and become champion is one thing
0:43:28 > 0:43:32but then to be able to come back and do it again is an amazing thing.
0:43:32 > 0:43:33Little children, kind of adults,
0:43:33 > 0:43:36everyone around the world will look up to him and think,
0:43:36 > 0:43:38"Well, if he can do it with everything that he's been through,
0:43:38 > 0:43:39"why can't I?"
0:43:39 > 0:43:41Peacock's gold again!
0:43:41 > 0:43:44He is now one of the great Paralympians.
0:43:44 > 0:43:47Going back to that stadium where it all started for me
0:43:47 > 0:43:49and to be able to do a home Paralympics
0:43:49 > 0:43:52and a home World Championships,
0:43:52 > 0:43:54those two medals were always going to mean a lot.
0:43:54 > 0:43:55That track's special to me.
0:43:55 > 0:43:58The last two years really have been leading up to that race.
0:43:58 > 0:44:01Jonnie Peacock's riding away from the blocks.
0:44:01 > 0:44:03Peacock will cross the line with a roar.
0:44:03 > 0:44:05Peacock won here five years ago.
0:44:05 > 0:44:08He's returned to this stadium and produced again.
0:44:08 > 0:44:11Being nominated for Sports Personality Of The Year,
0:44:11 > 0:44:14it's such an honour, you know, the names that have been on this list
0:44:14 > 0:44:18and to be within those names is really incredible.
0:44:18 > 0:44:20About a month ago, I saw the doctor that took my leg off
0:44:20 > 0:44:23and I think it was good to see him see me
0:44:23 > 0:44:26because at the time when he has to decide whether to amputate or not,
0:44:26 > 0:44:29he's obviously doing it under the assumption
0:44:29 > 0:44:33that I'm going to be better for it, I'm going to live a better life.
0:44:33 > 0:44:36So I think seeing that I've kind of dealt with things OK
0:44:36 > 0:44:38and that I was running,
0:44:38 > 0:44:41he realised that he makes decisions that really do...
0:44:42 > 0:44:44..do the best.
0:44:44 > 0:44:46Richard, can you put Jonnie Peacock's achievements
0:44:46 > 0:44:49- into context for us? - Yeah, well, the T44 100 metres,
0:44:49 > 0:44:52that's the blue ribbon, really, of the Paralympics.
0:44:52 > 0:44:54That is, essentially, the 100 metres race.
0:44:54 > 0:44:57He has not lost a final in T44 100 metres.
0:44:57 > 0:44:59He's absolutely dominant in that event,
0:44:59 > 0:45:02it's an incredible achievement, you know, added to that,
0:45:02 > 0:45:04he got further through Strictly than virtually anyone else
0:45:04 > 0:45:07who's ever been nominated for Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:45:07 > 0:45:10Iwan Thomas got knocked out in the first round.
0:45:10 > 0:45:12Tony Jacklin got knocked out in the first round.
0:45:12 > 0:45:14Joe Calzaghe made it to week five.
0:45:14 > 0:45:15Denise Lewis made the final.
0:45:15 > 0:45:18Denise Lewis and Colin Jackson both came second.
0:45:18 > 0:45:21They're the best Sports Personality podium finishers ever in Strictly.
0:45:21 > 0:45:24- What an interesting connection. - How did you do?- Sorry?
0:45:24 > 0:45:26- How did you do? - That's a pointless question. Erm...
0:45:26 > 0:45:27TOM LAUGHS
0:45:27 > 0:45:31We've kind of got used to para success, Games upon Games,
0:45:31 > 0:45:34but Jonnie was at the vanguard of that and he really brought it
0:45:34 > 0:45:37to the fore, didn't he, and gave it a public face, if you like?
0:45:37 > 0:45:40- He was the poster boy. - Yeah, I mean, in 2012,
0:45:40 > 0:45:42the British public were obsessed with the Paralympics.
0:45:42 > 0:45:45They wanted more from the Olympics and it was the Paralympics
0:45:45 > 0:45:47and we had the superheroes that were the para athletes
0:45:47 > 0:45:50and Jonnie Peacock really championed that and now he's just been
0:45:50 > 0:45:52so successful year after year after year.
0:45:52 > 0:45:54So, I mean, he's a great guy.
0:45:54 > 0:45:58Elise Christie had such a terrible Olympics in 2014
0:45:58 > 0:45:59and that happens to athletes
0:45:59 > 0:46:02but what happened next to her was unforgivable,
0:46:02 > 0:46:05the kind of abuse she received, death threats on social media.
0:46:05 > 0:46:08How does an athlete deal with that kind of personal torment?
0:46:08 > 0:46:10I mean, it's tough enough to go into an Olympic Games
0:46:10 > 0:46:13after four years of training, training relentlessly day in,
0:46:13 > 0:46:15day out for that one moment
0:46:15 > 0:46:18and if you get disqualified or if you bomb out and then to have
0:46:18 > 0:46:22on top of that people trolling you on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook,
0:46:22 > 0:46:25YouTube, whatever it is, you know, it's really tough to deal with.
0:46:25 > 0:46:28- And what...?- Especially... Especially, I think, in a sport
0:46:28 > 0:46:30that's so competitive and so exciting
0:46:30 > 0:46:33as short track speed skating cos it's a fantastic sport to watch
0:46:33 > 0:46:36and it's great to have a Briton right at the top of their game.
0:46:36 > 0:46:39I think my favourite ever Winter Olympic moment
0:46:39 > 0:46:41was when Australia, do you remember this,
0:46:41 > 0:46:43- won their first-ever...- Gold. - ..gold medal?- Yes.
0:46:43 > 0:46:46Steven Bradbury when he was at the back of the field and everyone...
0:46:46 > 0:46:48- Everybody got wiped out.- Yeah. - Oh, my good...
0:46:48 > 0:46:50I could watch that clip all day long.
0:46:50 > 0:46:52Is there any precedent to say how she will do?
0:46:52 > 0:46:54Can you give us any steer on Elise's chances?
0:46:54 > 0:46:57Hard to tell. I mean, there haven't been that many Scottish winners,
0:46:57 > 0:46:59funnily enough. We know the most successful
0:46:59 > 0:47:01Sports Personality Of The Year competitor ever
0:47:01 > 0:47:03is Andy Murray, he's won three times.
0:47:03 > 0:47:06The youngest ever winner, Ian Black, the swimmer, was 17, he's Scottish.
0:47:06 > 0:47:09- Only three other Scottish winners. - Liz McColgan.
0:47:09 > 0:47:11Liz McColgan won it. There was a motor racer...
0:47:13 > 0:47:15- Jackie Stewart.- Jackie Stewart. - Of course.
0:47:15 > 0:47:18And a gentleman we've talked to and seen already before, a cyclist.
0:47:18 > 0:47:19- Chris Hoy.- Chris Hoy.
0:47:19 > 0:47:22But, yeah, been a very successful time for the Scots recently
0:47:22 > 0:47:23in Sports Personality Of The Year,
0:47:23 > 0:47:25we'll see if she can continue that run.
0:47:25 > 0:47:27Well, as you know, this year's SPOTY comes from Liverpool
0:47:27 > 0:47:30and there are few cities which can boast its sporting heritage -
0:47:30 > 0:47:33one of the greatest footballing rivalries in the world
0:47:33 > 0:47:35and the jewel in the crown of the racing calendar.
0:47:35 > 0:47:38This is the Mersey sound of football.
0:47:38 > 0:47:42MUSIC: She Loves You by The Beatles
0:47:46 > 0:47:48..wins the National!
0:47:48 > 0:47:50It's a goal.
0:47:50 > 0:47:52Keegan. 1-0.
0:47:53 > 0:47:55They're running it home now.
0:47:56 > 0:47:57Kenny Dalglish!
0:48:00 > 0:48:02What a fantastic goal.
0:48:02 > 0:48:03Over the line...
0:48:04 > 0:48:06Right off.
0:48:06 > 0:48:08Fowler's coming in...
0:48:08 > 0:48:09Oh!
0:48:10 > 0:48:12Michael Owen for Liverpool...
0:48:12 > 0:48:14Oh, he's done it!
0:48:14 > 0:48:15To Rooney!
0:48:18 > 0:48:20Rooney, Fowler, Owen,
0:48:20 > 0:48:23all strikers who featured in that famous Liverpool Derby
0:48:23 > 0:48:24and then for England.
0:48:24 > 0:48:27But one striker looking to eclipse them all is our next contender,
0:48:27 > 0:48:29a goal-scoring machine.
0:48:29 > 0:48:32This year Harry Kane has earned his spurs.
0:48:33 > 0:48:36My passion for goals has just, yeah, it's been there since I was a kid,
0:48:36 > 0:48:40really, playing over the park with my dad and brother.
0:48:40 > 0:48:43The feeling of scoring a goal, it never gets old...
0:48:43 > 0:48:45Obviously except for the birth of my baby daughter,
0:48:45 > 0:48:48there's not much else that comes close to it, to be honest.
0:48:48 > 0:48:52He's just shown great determination, willpower,
0:48:52 > 0:48:53perseverance.
0:48:53 > 0:48:56He's not far away from being the perfect striker.
0:48:56 > 0:48:58It's what I think about pretty much every day of my life.
0:48:58 > 0:49:01What finishes, right foot, left foot, cutting inside,
0:49:01 > 0:49:04crossing, free kicks cos in the game, you never know
0:49:04 > 0:49:05what chance you're going to get.
0:49:05 > 0:49:09He's probably the most all-round striker that is playing
0:49:09 > 0:49:12at the moment and for that very reason, a defender just can never,
0:49:12 > 0:49:15ever switch off because he can score any type of goal.
0:49:15 > 0:49:17Here's Kane.
0:49:17 > 0:49:18Kane, 1-0!
0:49:18 > 0:49:20Oh, that's fantastic!
0:49:20 > 0:49:22Across to Kane...
0:49:22 > 0:49:25100 Tottenham goals!
0:49:25 > 0:49:28Kane is there and England score!
0:49:28 > 0:49:31As a kid growing up, you always dream of playing for England
0:49:31 > 0:49:32and, of course, captaining one day,
0:49:32 > 0:49:34but you never kind of think it's going to come true,
0:49:34 > 0:49:37so to have that opportunity and to score that last-minute winner
0:49:37 > 0:49:39to send us to the World Cup, it was just incredible.
0:49:39 > 0:49:41There is no doubt about it that Harry Kane
0:49:41 > 0:49:43is England's brightest hope.
0:49:43 > 0:49:47To have that feeling, that you're leading your country out
0:49:47 > 0:49:49in front of everyone, in front of your team-mates,
0:49:49 > 0:49:52in front of 80-90,000, it's the biggest thing that can happen.
0:49:52 > 0:49:55If Harry Kane keeps going the way he is, wins a big trophy,
0:49:55 > 0:49:57with England or with Tottenham,
0:49:57 > 0:49:59then that really catapults you into the limelight
0:49:59 > 0:50:03and then maybe on the list of the Ballon d'Or recipients.
0:50:03 > 0:50:05Ronaldo and Messi have cleaned up, haven't they, for many years now?
0:50:05 > 0:50:07Someone's got to break the mould eventually.
0:50:07 > 0:50:10To be put in the same breath as Ronaldo and Messi
0:50:10 > 0:50:11is something I'm proud of.
0:50:11 > 0:50:15They obviously set the bar for every other footballer, really,
0:50:15 > 0:50:17the Ballon d'Ors they've won, the goals they score.
0:50:17 > 0:50:19Yeah, it's great to be up there with them numbers
0:50:19 > 0:50:22but it's about turning that into winning trophies,
0:50:22 > 0:50:25winning Champions Leagues, winning Premier Leagues
0:50:25 > 0:50:27and that's my ultimate goal.
0:50:27 > 0:50:32The winner of the Sports Personality award for 1998 is...
0:50:32 > 0:50:34..Michael Owen.
0:50:34 > 0:50:38It's a mixed feeling, really, you're so elated and so happy
0:50:38 > 0:50:40but as a young lad I was thinking, "Oh, right,
0:50:40 > 0:50:43"I've got to do a speech now," and I didn't know what to say
0:50:43 > 0:50:46and all the rest of it so I was concentrating on not making a fool
0:50:46 > 0:50:48of myself in front of millions and millions of viewers.
0:50:48 > 0:50:51So it was only after the show, really, that it sunk in
0:50:51 > 0:50:53to think that I've won that really famous trophy.
0:50:53 > 0:50:55To have been nominated for Sports Personality Of The Year
0:50:55 > 0:50:57is a massive achievement,
0:50:57 > 0:51:00probably wasn't expecting it, if I'm totally honest.
0:51:00 > 0:51:02But it's been a fantastic year for me personally
0:51:02 > 0:51:05and something I'm very proud of.
0:51:05 > 0:51:07GABBY: Harry Kane has become Mr Consistent.
0:51:07 > 0:51:10He's consistently getting better and better,
0:51:10 > 0:51:13just like our next contender who breaks world records for fun.
0:51:13 > 0:51:17In 2017, Adam Peaty became double world champion again.
0:51:17 > 0:51:20Telling his story is a double Olympic champion
0:51:20 > 0:51:25who came third at SPOTY in 2008 - Miss Rebecca Adlington.
0:51:25 > 0:51:292008 was just an incredible year for myself,
0:51:29 > 0:51:31still probably one of the best years of my whole entire life
0:51:31 > 0:51:34and to come away with a gold, something I never, ever,
0:51:34 > 0:51:38ever expected, the cherry on top was getting that world record.
0:51:38 > 0:51:42Rebecca Adlington, you are absolutely brilliant.
0:51:42 > 0:51:44There's something special about Sports Personality,
0:51:44 > 0:51:45something different.
0:51:45 > 0:51:49When my name got announced as third, I was so honoured,
0:51:49 > 0:51:51I felt like I was waving the flag for swimming.
0:51:51 > 0:51:56Now we have a Adam Peaty who is just swimming through and through.
0:51:56 > 0:52:00This is quite amazing, absolutely brilliant breaststroke swimming.
0:52:00 > 0:52:02The rest of the world, reset their dreams
0:52:02 > 0:52:04cos their dreams are no longer quick enough.
0:52:04 > 0:52:07He's an absolute beast, isn't he?
0:52:07 > 0:52:09The year in the pool has been incredible for me.
0:52:09 > 0:52:11You know, obviously World Championships,
0:52:11 > 0:52:13defending all my titles. I knew I wanted to represent my country
0:52:13 > 0:52:15and I knew I wanted to do well, you know,
0:52:15 > 0:52:17I'm not a person who's going to turn up and, you know,
0:52:17 > 0:52:18just give a half a job.
0:52:18 > 0:52:20You can go to Olympics, you can win it
0:52:20 > 0:52:22but it's how you back up that win then.
0:52:22 > 0:52:2725.95, I never thought I would live to see the day.
0:52:27 > 0:52:30I turned around, I was like, "25.9." I was like, "Oh, my God,
0:52:30 > 0:52:33"this is, this is unreal." And normally, you know, 50 metres,
0:52:33 > 0:52:36yeah, you win by this much, you win by that much, but never this much.
0:52:36 > 0:52:38You could tell he was shocked.
0:52:38 > 0:52:40I loved his reaction after that race.
0:52:40 > 0:52:43He just looked like a little kid again that's in a sweet shop.
0:52:43 > 0:52:46Does he know any boundaries whatsoever?
0:52:46 > 0:52:47I don't think he does.
0:52:47 > 0:52:48Legacy is everything.
0:52:48 > 0:52:51I mean, there's no point in doing sport and just coming and going.
0:52:51 > 0:52:53I think, you know, you've got to go there,
0:52:53 > 0:52:55put your foot down and say, you know, "This is my territory."
0:52:55 > 0:52:58A good, clean start in this final of the men's 100 metres breaststroke.
0:52:58 > 0:53:01Adam Peaty's destroyed the best in the world.
0:53:01 > 0:53:02Is there nothing that this guy can't do?
0:53:02 > 0:53:05You don't want to kind of fade into history, you want to say,
0:53:05 > 0:53:07"Yes, he was one of the best,"
0:53:07 > 0:53:09and that's kind of what motivates me now.
0:53:09 > 0:53:12He's created new moulds now that everyone else wants to copy.
0:53:12 > 0:53:14You've got kind of the eight-year-olds
0:53:14 > 0:53:17in the swimming clubs wanting to copy Adam Peaty's stroke
0:53:17 > 0:53:20and that is just such a legacy that he's going to leave behind.
0:53:20 > 0:53:23Great Britain have won silver in the 4x100 medley relay,
0:53:23 > 0:53:26largely thanks, of course, to Adam Peaty.
0:53:26 > 0:53:28He's amongst the Michael Phelps,
0:53:28 > 0:53:31you can put him in the same category as people like that.
0:53:31 > 0:53:34Yes, he might not have the same medal count as somebody else
0:53:34 > 0:53:37but he definitely has that presence and that recognition
0:53:37 > 0:53:41because of how much he dominates and how much he's kept that level.
0:53:41 > 0:53:43To be nominated for SPOTY for the fourth year is
0:53:43 > 0:53:44amazing for me, you know,
0:53:44 > 0:53:47I never thought I'd make it past the second one but, you know,
0:53:47 > 0:53:50it's kind of not just for me,
0:53:50 > 0:53:52it's recognising the achievements of my team.
0:53:52 > 0:53:54I don't see why I can't keep winning for the next 10 years
0:53:54 > 0:53:57or until I retire, you know, I'd love to go to LA 2028.
0:53:57 > 0:53:59You just don't know but I'm just going to take each Olympic year
0:53:59 > 0:54:03as it comes and, yeah, just enjoy the journey.
0:54:03 > 0:54:06GABBY: Richard, the stats on this man are just ridiculous.
0:54:06 > 0:54:07I mean, they really are.
0:54:07 > 0:54:10It's his fourth straight year on the Sports Personality shortlist.
0:54:10 > 0:54:13If you ever see him in these races, people are racing for seconds,
0:54:13 > 0:54:16he doesn't just win by a bit, he really wins by a huge amount,
0:54:16 > 0:54:19which especially in the 50 metres is extraordinary,
0:54:19 > 0:54:20it's unprecedented.
0:54:20 > 0:54:22One thing that might work against him,
0:54:22 > 0:54:26he's the youngest contender on our shortlist, 22 years old.
0:54:26 > 0:54:30No-one born after 1990 has ever won Sports Personality Of The Year.
0:54:30 > 0:54:32- That has to change soon. - It will change at some point.
0:54:32 > 0:54:34He's also, as Rebecca Adlington said there,
0:54:34 > 0:54:37being compared to Phelps in terms of his dominance,
0:54:37 > 0:54:40which you've just alluded to why, not yet the golds
0:54:40 > 0:54:42but for what he does, you know,
0:54:42 > 0:54:44can we put him up in that kind of greatness?
0:54:44 > 0:54:46He competes in fewer events than Phelps
0:54:46 > 0:54:48so he'll probably never overhaul that kind of...
0:54:48 > 0:54:49the medal haul of Michael Phelps.
0:54:49 > 0:54:52But certainly in the events that he does, he's absolutely unbeatable.
0:54:52 > 0:54:54What's he like to have around the squad?
0:54:54 > 0:54:56What's his presence like, Tom?
0:54:56 > 0:54:58I mean, he's hard-working,
0:54:58 > 0:55:01he's a big inspiration and there's this aura around him
0:55:01 > 0:55:02that just make...
0:55:02 > 0:55:05You know, when you walk into a room and you see him there,
0:55:05 > 0:55:08it's just something that...you just feel this energy of winning.
0:55:08 > 0:55:11And so much so that at the British Championships,
0:55:11 > 0:55:13he met this young kid afterwards and wanted him to sign
0:55:13 > 0:55:15something for him, didn't have anything,
0:55:15 > 0:55:17gave him his gold medal that qualified him
0:55:17 > 0:55:19for the World Championships.
0:55:19 > 0:55:21That fantastic social media VT he put up
0:55:21 > 0:55:24- doing the push-ups...- Yes.- ..and, you know, with the claps.
0:55:24 > 0:55:26- Can you do that? Do you do that? - We do lots...
0:55:26 > 0:55:28We have to jump off our hands for handstands
0:55:28 > 0:55:30so we do lots of that kind of training
0:55:30 > 0:55:32to make sure that we can generate power. But...
0:55:32 > 0:55:34- Same. Same, Gabby. You?- Absolutely.
0:55:34 > 0:55:36- Yeah, a lot of that.- A lot of watching, Richard.- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
0:55:36 > 0:55:38He's definitely a strong lad, though.
0:55:38 > 0:55:40Richard, Harry Kane has had an amazing year.
0:55:40 > 0:55:42This is a guy who, four seasons ago,
0:55:42 > 0:55:44was on the bench in the championship,
0:55:44 > 0:55:46which goes to show what a bit of application can do,
0:55:46 > 0:55:49he's clearly very talented as well. No, he's had a phenomenal year,
0:55:49 > 0:55:51seems to go about things the right way as well.
0:55:51 > 0:55:53Football stars often don't do brilliantly
0:55:53 > 0:55:57on Sports Personality, some very, very big names have not won it.
0:55:57 > 0:55:59Kevin Keegan was beaten by Seb Coe,
0:55:59 > 0:56:02Gordon Banks was beaten by Dame Mary Peters.
0:56:02 > 0:56:05Do you remember a player called Gary Lineker?
0:56:05 > 0:56:08- Remember him?- Oh... I'll look him up later.
0:56:08 > 0:56:09Yeah, I don't know what happened to him.
0:56:09 > 0:56:12Anyway, he got beaten by Liz McColgan and best of all,
0:56:12 > 0:56:14George Best, who never won Sports Personality Of The Year
0:56:14 > 0:56:15was beaten by Princess Anne.
0:56:15 > 0:56:18Harry Kane has got a lovely way about him on social media,
0:56:18 > 0:56:20hasn't he? There's always something interesting.
0:56:20 > 0:56:22- His dogs, for example. - Yeah, exactly.
0:56:22 > 0:56:23He's a massive NFL fan
0:56:23 > 0:56:26and he's called his dogs Brady and Wilson after Tom Brady
0:56:26 > 0:56:28and Russell Wilson which, again, it's so cute,
0:56:28 > 0:56:30the picture of the dogs as well. Bless him.
0:56:30 > 0:56:33Tom, interestingly, every time there's a big football match,
0:56:33 > 0:56:34your Twitter feed lights up.
0:56:34 > 0:56:36I know, I'm not the biggest fan of football so I never know
0:56:36 > 0:56:39when anything's on, but as soon as there's a dive on the pitch
0:56:39 > 0:56:41I'm apparently the new coach of that team.
0:56:41 > 0:56:43Everyone thinks they're the first person to do the joke.
0:56:43 > 0:56:46Listen, I'm a Fulham fan and I present a show called Pointless,
0:56:46 > 0:56:48so, listen, I have heard that joke before.
0:56:48 > 0:56:50He's one of those people that I think the neutrals
0:56:50 > 0:56:53don't mind embracing, which could stand him in good stead.
0:56:53 > 0:56:55Yeah, listen, he's got that old-fashioned thing,
0:56:55 > 0:56:58- which we need in British football. There's...- He's called Harry?
0:56:58 > 0:57:00Well, for many years we didn't have, no-one called Harry
0:57:00 > 0:57:02had played for England for many, many years.
0:57:02 > 0:57:04Now we've got Harry Kane, we've got Harry Maguire,
