:23:10. > :23:11.
:23:11. > :23:15.tour deforce for Mark Cavendish. has become a real British icon.
:23:15. > :23:22.Many my eyes he's probably the best sprinter that's ever been around.
:23:22. > :23:25.born winner. He's just got that aura about him. Mark Cavendish wins

:24:02. > :24:12.champion. He has a desire for winning and he demonstrated that in
:24:12. > :24:16.the Tour de France. The green Jersey is the pinnical and it's the
:24:16. > :24:22.biggest bike race in the world. It's brutal. It's the whole wanding
:24:22. > :24:32.to get to Paris and wanting to win in the sham sham. Cavendish will
:24:32. > :24:34.
:24:34. > :24:39.get it. I can't see him giving up. The world championship in Denmark,
:24:39. > :24:45.fantastic victory for Great Britain. We were all in it together, corking

:25:50. > :25:54.Yeah, the two hardest goals I could possibly set for myself in a year,
:25:54. > :25:59.but I was incredibly lucky and I had great guys supporting me and we
:25:59. > :26:07.achieved them both, so we can look back on the year pretty well.
:26:08. > :26:13.certainly can. You are chasing Mercks's record, that's 40. Doable?
:26:13. > :26:18.I'm not chasing records, but it's definitely doable. On average five

:30:22. > :30:31.has he got it in him to pull this back.
:30:31. > :30:38.COMMENTATOR: Here's the chance for Greene to seize the moment. Greene

:31:07. > :31:11.Please welcome Dai Greene. As we heard there, you've overcome
:31:11. > :31:15.epilepsy, injuries and a lot of funding as well. The road to
:31:15. > :31:20.success really hasn't been an easy one, has it? Had t hasn't been.
:31:20. > :31:24.With a background like that, I think I should audition for X
:31:24. > :31:27.Factor next year. I've had good people around me I think. That's
:31:27. > :31:31.just helped know stay positive. I have a great girlfriend and family.
:31:31. > :31:34.You saw them on the clip. Without them I wouldn't be here. Talking of
:31:34. > :31:38.your girlfriend, she's just told everyone that you dot ironing. Did
:31:38. > :31:44.you iron that tonight? I tried to. I didn't want anyone to bring
:31:44. > :31:47.attention to it, but now thanks... She did it. Take us back to the
:31:47. > :31:50.Gold Medal, you were the only one out there. Talk us through the
:31:50. > :31:54.final stages, coming up to the eighth hurdle, did you think it was
:31:54. > :32:00.going to be gold? I always believed I could win. In an individual sport
:32:00. > :32:06.you have to have that mind set. At that point I thought, you've given
:32:06. > :32:10.them way too much, you have to get your bum in gear. I had to push on
:32:10. > :32:14.the home straight. The best part of my race is the tail end. It always
:32:14. > :32:18.looks dramatic for the fans. It was dramatic. European champion,
:32:18. > :32:22.Commonwealth communicate, world champion. You know what's coming
:32:22. > :32:25.next. You seem to embrace the pressure of London 2012. I live for
:32:25. > :32:30.the big competitions. That's what I train for. If I have the complete
:32:30. > :32:36.set next year, I can kick back and retire and maybe co-host next year,
:32:36. > :32:40.Sue! Absolutely, you've got the job. Well done, congratulations on a
:32:40. > :32:50.fantastic year. Dai Greene, everybody.

:35:00. > :35:03.coming. Just missed out on gold this year Jessica, in your thoughts
:35:03. > :35:08.now, obviously the Olympics surely. Yeah very excited, training hard
:35:08. > :35:12.and you know, you learn a lot from the mistakes you make. So I'm just,
:35:12. > :35:16.I have that drive and motivation to make everything go right this year.
:35:16. > :35:20.We wish you all the very best. Roberto I'll talk to you a little
:35:20. > :35:30.later. Before we announce the winner, let's look at the top three
:35:30. > :35:36.
:35:36. > :35:41.Lucy Gp -- Garner is a phenomenon. She was the road race champion and
:35:41. > :35:49.won two golds at the youth Commonwealth Games. Eleanor
:35:49. > :35:52.Simmonds made another big plash in the pool this year. She won four
:35:52. > :35:57.medals and set two new world records.
:35:57. > :36:00.Lauren Taylor proved herself to be a major new driving force in golf.
:36:00. > :36:07.The 17-year-old created history becoming the youngest player ever
:36:07. > :36:13.to win the ladies British Open Amateur Championship. Jess, if you
:36:13. > :36:23.would be as kind to tell us the winner.
:36:23. > :36:51.
:36:51. > :36:56.And the Young Sports Personality Of Many congratulations. I'm sure
:36:56. > :37:00.you'd like it say a few words. this is such an honour to win this
:37:00. > :37:05.award. There's a few thank yous I'd like to make. Firstly, to English
:37:05. > :37:10.women's golf association for all their support. Secondly to my
:37:10. > :37:17.special supporters at Woburn Golf Club. I wouldn't here without your
:37:17. > :37:22.help. Next my coach Andy Dunbar for all the hard work we put in. He's
:37:22. > :37:26.got me that trophy there. I'd like to thank my family and friends,
:37:26. > :37:32.especially my dad, hi dad! He caddied for me in the Open this
:37:32. > :37:37.year. Also the Amateur Championship. It was a special moment when I won.
:37:37. > :37:42.Finally, I'd like to thank the RGU for putting on fantastic events
:37:42. > :37:52.throughout the year. Thank you very much. Have a great evening. Lauren
:37:52. > :38:09.
:38:09. > :38:14.Remember that name. Our next contender is a man who when it
:38:14. > :38:17.comes to talent is a real heavyweight N2011, a boxer from
:38:17. > :38:20.Bolton because a double light welterweight champion. He was brave
:38:20. > :38:25.enough to travel to the States and lay his belts on the line.
:38:25. > :38:32.Amir Khan. My first impression of Amir was
:38:32. > :38:38.that he was going to be special. A great fighter inside the ring. Also
:38:38. > :38:43.special outside the ring. Being a person who kids can look up to.
:38:43. > :38:49.known Amir since he was a young boy. When he first started coming to the
:38:49. > :38:52.gym where I worked. He grew up in this area, one of the worst areas
:38:52. > :38:56.in Bolton. This is the Community Centre. Amir Khan paid for this
:38:56. > :39:02.place out of his own pocket. It's massively important because without
:39:02. > :39:07.this place I think the crime rate would start rising. We have 200,000
:39:07. > :39:12.people here. That's huge. This is what sets Amir Khan aside from the
:39:12. > :39:16.rest. He's an inspiration. He wants to make a difference. You see
:39:16. > :39:19.people change when they become successful. Not Amir Khan. If he
:39:19. > :39:25.sees an old person struggling with bags, and I know this, because I've
:39:25. > :39:30.seen it myself, he will stop "Can I take you home with your bags?" I've
:39:30. > :39:40.never seen anybody work as hard in or outside the ring. He is all
:39:40. > :39:44.
:39:44. > :39:48.COMMENTATOR: Amir Khan is the new union nied light welterweight
:39:48. > :39:52.champion in the world. He will be the best pound for pound in the
:39:52. > :39:58.world one day. COMMENTATOR: Two boints deducted.
:39:58. > :40:03.On our cards we think he's done enough. It's a monumental upset.
:40:03. > :40:07.Defeats are actually a good thing for Amir Khan. We all know that he
:40:07. > :40:13.can bounce right back up and become world champion once again.
:40:13. > :40:20.He's been able to accomplish so much at such a young age. I have to
:40:20. > :40:26.rank him as the number one guy. knows what he wants to achieve.
:40:26. > :40:36.What he doesn't realise himself is what he has achieved.
:40:36. > :41:07.
:41:07. > :41:10.Ladies and gentleman, please I've always wanted to do that. What
:41:10. > :41:13.a reception tonight. Throughout the day I've been trying to work out
:41:14. > :41:18.your sporting year in my head, for the first time in your career, you
:41:18. > :41:21.had two world tight nlz your hand. Before the year was out, they've
:41:21. > :41:25.both gone. How much does that inspire you to get into 2012 and
:41:25. > :41:32.get the belts back? I know how it feels to have two world titles. I
:41:32. > :41:37.really want a rematch. I know I was robbed against Lamont Peterson.
:41:37. > :41:40.Hopefully I can come back stronger. 2012 is a big year for me. I can
:41:40. > :41:47.come back and get my belts back and hopefully move up to the next
:41:47. > :41:53.division. Two things that stand out from Oscar De la Ho ya talking
:41:53. > :41:56.about you there, he said defeats aren't a bad thing for you. He
:41:56. > :42:01.thinks you can beat the best pound for pound in the world. He knows
:42:01. > :42:05.talent when he sees it. I train very hard day in, day out. I live
:42:05. > :42:09.in Los Angeles when I'm training for a fight. That's just me. I love
:42:09. > :42:12.working hard rgs fighting hard. I love putting on good performances.
:42:13. > :42:18.Oscar says it there, he sees talent out there. All I have to do is go
:42:18. > :42:26.out there and win fights and look good against my opponents. 2012 is
:42:26. > :42:31.a big year for me. I want to fight the likes of Floyd Mayweather.
:42:31. > :42:35.is going to be good and only a few days away, good news for all of us.
:42:35. > :42:45.Well done and everything you do in those gyms in Bolton is very
:42:45. > :43:03.
:43:03. > :43:11.impress. Ladies and gentleman, one He's the new world number one in
:43:11. > :43:13.every sense, Novak Djokovic. Petra Kvitova is the Wimbledon champion.
:43:13. > :43:18.Congratulations to Petra Kvitova another wonderful Wimbledon. At the
:43:18. > :43:23.US Open, 17-year-old Oliver Golding won the boils' title to emulate
:43:23. > :43:29.what the next contender did seven years ago. Since 2004 this super
:43:29. > :43:33.Scot has got better and better. In 2011 he had us enthrauted, winning
:43:33. > :43:41.five turnaments and reaching the last four in the Grand Slams. He is,
:43:41. > :43:46.of course, Andy Murray. Excellent year. He's lifting himself to, in
:43:46. > :43:50.the same conversation with some of the all-time greats, Nadal, Federer,
:43:50. > :43:54.Djokavic. These guys ain't no joke. They're real good athletes. He's in
:43:54. > :43:59.amongst it. He's beaten every one of them at one stage or another. As
:43:59. > :44:04.the years that I've known him, he's got better and better. This has
:44:04. > :44:09.been my best year. In the biggest events I've played my best tennis.
:44:09. > :44:14.I got to the semi-finals or better of all four of the slams, which has
:44:14. > :44:19.only happened I think six times in the history of the game. It is,
:44:19. > :44:23.without question, one of the strongest ear yaz of all time. It's
:44:23. > :44:27.great to be part of it. I think of the achievements thaw have, they
:44:27. > :44:31.feel bigger because of the guys you are competing against.
:44:31. > :44:41.On the court I see someone who has incredible hands, reminded me of
:44:41. > :44:43.
:44:43. > :44:48.He's like, you watch him and he's like a chess player, just the
:44:48. > :44:56.ability to change gears and throw off an opponent. It's like watching
:44:56. > :45:05.a video game or ping pong on a tennis court. Wimbledon is like a
:45:05. > :45:08.national moment. I remember watching as a kid. We have had a
:45:08. > :45:13.British winner today. You always assume who was playing from Britain
:45:13. > :45:19.was out early doors. Well, who do you fancy? Now, you are on the edge
:45:19. > :45:25.of your seat believing that Andy Murray can win Wimbledon. If you
:45:25. > :45:30.miss something like that, you look like a prat. Funny guy. Very dry.
:45:30. > :45:34.remember the day before my last big fight I was texting him and before
:45:34. > :45:39.he has big matches I've tried to text him. I've tried to get him to
:45:39. > :45:43.trash talk his opponents. Le has tried to get me to crush my
:45:43. > :45:46.opponent's hands when we shake hands, but I was trying to explain
:45:46. > :45:51.that we are meant to be gentlemen, so you can't get away with that
:45:51. > :45:56.stuff unfortunately. He's been Britain's best tennis player in a
:45:56. > :46:00.lifetime and all he has to do is keep the form going and he'll be
:46:00. > :46:05.number one. I'm positive about that. Another outstanding year. Let's
:46:05. > :46:08.hope that Grand Slam will be his next year. He's one of tonight's
:46:08. > :46:18.ten contenders. We'll have a reminder of the all-important
:46:18. > :46:18.
:46:18. > :47:28.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 99 seconds
:47:28. > :47:31.Keep on voting for your favourite and remember you can vote for any
:47:31. > :47:35.contender at any time and you'll hear from our winners on the red
:47:35. > :47:41.button straight after the show. As the saying goes, behind every great
:47:41. > :47:50.team there's a great coach so the next award pays tribute to the very
:47:50. > :47:58.best, mind, mental and motivator. To announce who the 2011 coach is
:47:58. > :48:08.please welcome Keri-Anne Payne and Petra Kvitova.
:48:08. > :48:17.
:48:17. > :48:22.APPLAUSE It's always nice to get all the
:48:22. > :48:29.tall people together, but I'm joined by two women who have
:48:29. > :48:39.achieved incred libl sporting -- incredible sporting feats this year.
:48:39. > :48:39.
:48:39. > :48:43.We can see your smile there. What was that like? It was wonderful.
:48:43. > :48:48.Keri-Anne Payne, the first British athlete to secure your place at the
:48:48. > :48:53.2012 Games, an incredible day for you too? Absolutely. The race
:48:53. > :48:56.itself was just perfect in terms of tactics and things and it was a
:48:56. > :49:03.brilliant day and my sister gave birth to my niece on that day.
:49:03. > :49:07.How do you rank the two, about the same? She wins totally. Good luck
:49:07. > :49:17.in 2012. I'm sure you will both tell us how important your coaches
:49:17. > :49:18.
:49:18. > :49:23.are and we'll look at the contenders. In 2011, Sir Alex
:49:23. > :49:31.Ferguson celebrated 25 years in charge of Manchester United. He led
:49:31. > :49:34.the Red Devils to a record-breaking 19th top-flight title. They also
:49:34. > :49:37.reached the Champions League final. Andy Flower coached England's
:49:37. > :49:41.cricketers to new heights. They became the number one Test team in
:49:41. > :49:47.the world for the first time, thanks to a stunning Ashes success,
:49:47. > :49:51.victory over Sri Lanka and a 4-0 whitewash over India and Warren
:49:51. > :49:55.Gatland was behind Wales' excellent run in the rugby World Cup. They
:49:56. > :50:03.beat Ireland to reach the semis, but just missed out, losing to
:50:03. > :50:11.France by a single point. worthy. Keri-Anne Payne, the winner,
:50:11. > :50:21.please. And the winner of the Coach of the Year, is Andy Flower.
:50:21. > :50:50.
:50:50. > :50:54.Huge congratulations. I'm sure you would like to say a few words.
:50:54. > :50:58.Thank you very much. Thank you very much to the BBC and to the English
:50:58. > :51:02.public for the support that they give our cricket team. This is a
:51:02. > :51:08.very proud moment for me to stand here. I'm -- I moved from Zimbabwe
:51:08. > :51:13.a few years ago and England has been very good to my family and I.
:51:13. > :51:16.I'm also very proud to be part of the England cricket team. They've
:51:16. > :51:23.done so wonderful things over the last couple of years, so it's great
:51:23. > :51:28.for me to be part of that. I think everyone in this room realises that
:51:28. > :51:32.it's the players that actually make the hard decisions that play under
:51:32. > :51:37.the real pressure and have got to go and deliver once they get over
:51:37. > :51:43.that line. It's great to have a good bunch of players and people to
:51:43. > :51:45.work with. Thank you very much once again for this award. Thank you.
:51:45. > :51:55.Well done. Thank you very much. Ladies and gentlemen, the 2011
:51:55. > :52:01.
:52:01. > :52:08.Coach of the Year, Andy Flower. APPLAUSE
:52:08. > :52:12.To golf now and emotions ran deep at the Open, where Royal St
:52:12. > :52:16.George's one of the game's most popular players, who five years ago
:52:16. > :52:23.suffered a personal tragedy first won his first major at the age of
:52:23. > :52:30.42. I have known Darren since he was 15. He was by far and away the
:52:30. > :52:33.best player among the young. Darren spent hours on the green always
:52:33. > :52:43.practising putting and thinking this is going to be for the Open
:52:43. > :52:44.
:52:44. > :52:52.championship one day. What he went through cost him five years. They
:52:52. > :52:56.got married and then she passed away in 2006. It's been a very long
:52:56. > :53:00.and rocky and difficult road for Darren. Being a single parent isn't
:53:00. > :53:06.at all easy and for the boys to be without their mum has been heart
:53:06. > :53:12.breaking. He plays his best when he's at a low ebb, but then he
:53:12. > :53:20.found momentum and then the light goes on. That week he seemed to be
:53:20. > :53:25.very much in control of his emotions and of his golf. It was as
:53:25. > :53:29.if it was a different Darren. was obviously very windy and that
:53:29. > :53:34.played right in Darren's hands. He's probably the best wind player
:53:34. > :53:37.in the world. Well, that was some reception. Everybody just seemed to
:53:37. > :53:44.be so much behind Darren and so much wanting him to win and
:53:45. > :53:48.cheering him on. He won it properly. He went out and beat everybody else.
:53:48. > :53:52.He deserved to win that tournament. He played magnificently well. That
:53:52. > :53:59.would have meant an awful lot to Darren and his family. There's the
:53:59. > :54:04.two of them. Look. All morning, what time is daddy's coming home?
:54:04. > :54:13.Where will he be now? What's he doing. They're so proud of their
:54:13. > :54:17.daddy. He wanted to do it for them. He's been through one of the worst
:54:17. > :54:23.things that anyone human being can go through and to come back and win
:54:23. > :54:33.the Open, it's the ultimate. gulp. Please, welcome, Open
:54:33. > :54:37.
:54:37. > :54:47.champion, Darren clerk. -- Darren Clarke.
:54:47. > :54:58.
:54:58. > :55:01.APPLAUSE Darren, incredibly emotional scenes
:55:01. > :55:06.with the boys Tyrone and Conor there. Is that very emotional when
:55:06. > :55:10.it hit home? I think it was when I got back lom to them it would have
:55:10. > :55:18.been easy for me to pack it all in and not do anything and what have
:55:18. > :55:21.you, but I kept on going and to get back home and see the boys, see
:55:21. > :55:27.Tyrone and Conor and just saw the VT out the back there. I'm almost
:55:27. > :55:31.crying already. Just to give them a big hug. What I tried to do, I do
:55:31. > :55:37.it for them. It's nice for me, but I try to make them proud of their
:55:37. > :55:41.dad. Maybe that week I did. They certainly are. I think, also I
:55:41. > :55:44.don't know how many times I've wasted my money backing you for the
:55:45. > :55:49.Open. Needless to say, I didn't last year or this year, I should
:55:49. > :55:55.say. A few guys made a few quid. Did you surprise yourself? You are
:55:55. > :56:02.in your 40s now. Comfortably in my 40s. I was definitely the fattest
:56:02. > :56:06.one walking up there at that stage! I'm definitely so. Yes, golf, you
:56:07. > :56:10.never know what will happen. Maybe my time had passed through one
:56:10. > :56:14.reason or another, for different circumstances, but that's the
:56:14. > :56:18.beauty of our sport. It's different to the majority of other ones, that
:56:18. > :56:23.we can keep on going and keep on playing and - You held it together
:56:23. > :56:28.on the last round. Boy, did you celebrate after? Yes. I think the
:56:28. > :56:33.morning after was a little bit of a blur, but we carried on during the
:56:33. > :56:37.evening and weren't really doing anything and I ended up at 6am
:56:37. > :56:40.sitting having a drink at the table and I looked around and sort of

:23:36. > :23:40.bat to the Indian bowlers and pulverises them too. 294. The
:23:40. > :23:46.highest first-class score and a great innings. This young man has
:23:46. > :23:54.got 19 Test centuries and he's only 26. He grinds these teams into
:23:54. > :23:59.total submission and it is brilliant to watch. He's like the
:23:59. > :24:05.new Rock of Gibralter, he's just this great, big stick of granite,
:24:05. > :24:13.who just never gets out. He has all the attributes to be one of the
:24:13. > :24:23.greatest run scorers of all time. Cometh the hour, cometh the Cook.
:24:23. > :24:39.
:24:39. > :24:44.Please, welcome Alastair Cook. APPLAUSE
:24:44. > :24:47.That's what you call a welcome! Thank you. You were creating the
:24:47. > :24:51.fireworks in Australia. Tell us what was it like smashing the
:24:51. > :24:55.Aussies all over the place and winning the Ashes on their home
:24:55. > :25:01.soil? Everyone likes beating Australia, so it was incredible
:25:01. > :25:05.tour to be part of. To play a significant contribution to winning
:25:05. > :25:11.that, it will always stay long in my memory and when Chris Tremlett
:25:11. > :25:16.took that final wicket it was a great moment. 766 runs during the
:25:16. > :25:21.series, over 35 hours at the crease. How hard is it to maintain
:25:21. > :25:25.concentration? It's one of the challenges you have got. I'm a bit
:25:25. > :25:29.of a boring batsman to watch. I can't score runs quickly enough, so
:25:29. > :25:33.I have to stay there a long time. Goochy has taught me well on the
:25:33. > :25:39.concentration and to have him in my camp, teaching me how to be a run
:25:39. > :25:44.scorer is very important. Is there one moment during the year that is
:25:44. > :25:49.your special highlight? To me, it's right at the beginning, in Sydney.
:25:49. > :25:54.Obviously, Graeme Swann talked about it and Andrew, that moment
:25:54. > :26:00.when we finally achieved what a lot of people didn't think we could do.
:26:00. > :26:03.I believe there is a very big day coming up? Yeah, I'm getting
:26:03. > :26:07.married on New Year's Eve, so hopefully it will be a great way to
:26:07. > :26:09.end what has been a good year. luck with that. Good luck with the
:26:09. > :26:19.award tonight. Ladies and gentlemen, Alastair Cook.
:26:19. > :26:35.
:26:35. > :26:38.Still to come, we'll announce our Lifetime Achievement Award winner
:26:38. > :26:47.and end the night with the crowning of the BBC Sports Personality of
:26:47. > :26:52.the Year. The Walker Cup - Great Britain and Ireland's amateur men
:26:52. > :26:56.battle the elements and outgun the United States. Victory for Great
:26:57. > :27:00.Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup. A storming fightback by
:27:00. > :27:08.Europe's women stunned their American rivals. Their first one in
:27:08. > :27:11.the Solheim Cup since 2003. Wonderful scenes and I'm delighted
:27:11. > :27:16.to say there are members of the successful team with us this
:27:17. > :27:21.evening. I'm here with the captain of the team, Alison Nicholas,
:27:21. > :27:29.holding the trophy that nobody wants to drop. What an incredible
:27:29. > :27:34.year it was for you guys. Not only did you have to wait since 2003,
:27:34. > :27:36.but it was the way you did it? was magnificent with 30 minutes to
:27:36. > :27:41.go and everyone thought the Americans had won and the girls
:27:41. > :27:45.came back and fought back and they were great and it was just a great
:27:45. > :27:49.victory, great team effort. The determination and the belief they
:27:49. > :27:54.had in themselves was magnificent and I thank them for this trophy.
:27:54. > :27:58.Plenty of pride from the girls, but for you personally after such a
:27:58. > :28:04.wonderful career, was it the highlight? Absolutely. It even beat
:28:04. > :28:08.my US Open Major win. It was terrific to see the girls fight and
:28:08. > :28:14.play so well and to see their faces at the end of it. They were just a
:28:14. > :28:20.great team and it was a team effort. Indeed. Amazing drama. Thank you
:28:20. > :28:25.very much for being here this evening. Thank you. It was in the
:28:25. > :28:28.Walker Cup that our next contender excelled as an amateur. Now he's a
:28:28. > :28:32.model professional. This year he topped the money list on both sides
:28:32. > :28:37.of the Atlantic. He's world number one, the force was certainly with
:28:37. > :28:47.Luke Donald in 2011. My mum said when he was born this one is
:28:47. > :28:55.
:28:55. > :29:00.Use the force, Luke. He was the best player in the world. Highs
:29:00. > :29:07.consistency is second to none. fantastic. You expect him to hit
:29:07. > :29:15.the right shot at the right time. You could almost tell at an early
:29:15. > :29:18.age that he had that mindset to achieve the highest goal in golf.
:29:18. > :29:28.He works so hard on every aspect of his game. That is why I think he's
:29:28. > :29:29.
:29:29. > :29:36.become number one. The force will be with you, always. You have two
:29:36. > :29:41.guys fighting for formed number one. Then to have a playoff to decide it.
:29:41. > :29:51.He doesn't make mistakes, he just grinds them down. He's able to
:29:51. > :29:52.
:29:52. > :29:57.create the pressure because he's Our father passed away three weeks
:29:57. > :30:01.ago, I remember sitting on the sofa, and Luke holed that putt and just
:30:01. > :30:06.dad and I looked at each other and we just sort of held each other's
:30:06. > :30:10.hand and looked at each other. It was a nice moment. Seeing Luke
:30:10. > :30:20.become the best golfer in the world, just a lot of pride, just
:30:20. > :30:23.
:30:24. > :30:27.Because he goes about his business so quietly, you forget what he's
:30:27. > :30:33.done this year. You've got to believe that the majors will be the
:30:34. > :30:43.next step. The sky's the limit. Please welcome the number one
:30:44. > :31:06.
:31:06. > :31:10.We thought it was apt you've been so hot on the golf course this year.
:31:10. > :31:14.While it's been a year of constant highs on the course, it's been a
:31:14. > :31:18.year of highs and lows off it. Just three days after your lost your
:31:18. > :31:22.father, your second child was born. Yeah, that was some of the toughest
:31:22. > :31:26.weeks of my life, obviously, I think the birth of our second
:31:26. > :31:31.daughter shed a little grace on the situation. You can never prepare
:31:31. > :31:34.for something like that. There were so many highs and lows. Just so
:31:34. > :31:39.many emotions running around. It was tough. The only real
:31:39. > :31:43.frustration when it comes to Sophia is that she doesn't yet realise how
:31:43. > :31:48.special her dad is, the first man in the history of the sport to be
:31:48. > :31:56.world number one and top the money lists on both sides of the Atlantic.
:31:56. > :31:59.And to do with it it with a lightsabre. Yes! We all aspire to
:31:59. > :32:05.do something to create history, to do something that no-one has ever
:32:05. > :32:09.done. To win both money list titles was very special for me and a very,
:32:09. > :32:13.very proud moment. I'm sure the force is strong enough to keep it
:32:13. > :32:23.going in 2012. Well done for a fantastic year. Good luck tonight
:32:23. > :32:23.
:32:23. > :33:36.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 99 seconds
:33:36. > :33:46.as well. Ladies and gentleman, Luke Web to be get the bill payer's
:33:46. > :33:56.
:33:56. > :34:01.You've got about ten minutes to pick your favourite before the
:34:01. > :34:05.lines close. Don't delay. It's now time to announce the 2011 Team Of
:34:05. > :34:09.The Year. This award like the coach, overseas an the contenders for the
:34:09. > :34:14.main award, has been decided by a panel of newspaper and magazine
:34:14. > :34:18.editors, worth pointing that ou. To present the award, welcome the 2002
:34:18. > :34:28.Sports Personality Of The Year and Britain's most successful gymnast
:34:28. > :34:42.
:34:42. > :34:52.of all time, Paula Radcliffe and Great to have you both with us for
:34:52. > :34:55.this Team Of The Year award. Let's look at the top three contenders.
:34:55. > :35:00.England cricketers ruled the world in 2011, becoming the number one
:35:00. > :35:04.Test team on the planet after that stunning Ashes triumph and the
:35:04. > :35:09.whitewash of India. Manchester United created history this year,
:35:09. > :35:14.winning a record-breaking 19th top- flight English league title. They
:35:15. > :35:20.also enjoyed success in Europe, reaching the Champions League final.
:35:20. > :35:24.And Wales Rugby Union team enjoyed a fantastic run in the World Cup.
:35:24. > :35:33.They memorabley beat Ireland to reach the semi-s but missed out on
:35:33. > :35:43.the final by just a point. Beth, the winner please.
:35:43. > :36:17.
:36:17. > :36:20.The Team Of The Year for 2011 is Many congratulations Andrew. I'm
:36:20. > :36:24.sure you'd love to say a few words. Yeah I wo. Thank you very much.
:36:24. > :36:28.This is a special award for us to win. I'm delighted to win it for a
:36:28. > :36:32.couple of reasons. Firstly, because there's so many great teams who
:36:32. > :36:36.have won it in the past of the secondly, the one thing we have
:36:36. > :36:40.bought into as a team is the idea that the team is more important
:36:40. > :36:44.than the individual. I think it's been the real basis of why we've
:36:44. > :36:48.done well over the last couple of years and makes it even more
:36:48. > :36:55.special to receive this accolade tonight. A couple of very quick
:36:55. > :36:59.thank yous, if you don't mind. First to Andy Flower and the
:36:59. > :37:04.coaching staff. They've pushed us on, when sometimes we didn't want
:37:05. > :37:08.to push on. I thank you. I would like to thank the support staff and
:37:08. > :37:13.medical staff, who don't often get much praise, but they look after us
:37:13. > :37:16.fantastically well and probably think we're a load of prima Donnas.
:37:16. > :37:20.We appreciate that. We would like to thank our families who go
:37:20. > :37:25.through the trials and tribulations alongside us and probably deserve
:37:25. > :37:29.this a lot more than we do. Thank you very much, cheers.
:37:29. > :37:39.Congratulations England on an outstanding year.
:37:39. > :37:46.
:37:46. > :37:49.It's almost close of play in terms of voting for your 2011 Sports
:37:50. > :37:54.Personality Of The Year. The lines will only be open for a few more
:37:54. > :38:02.minutes, so get dialling. The rugby year began with England
:38:02. > :38:06.flying high. Ireland wrecked the Grand Slam. But still, the best of
:38:06. > :38:11.six. Saracens cut down the opposition to land the English
:38:11. > :38:17.Premiership. Leinster conquered Europe, but their double dreams
:38:17. > :38:22.were hit by old rivals Munster. Rugby league, another stunning
:38:22. > :38:29.Wembley showpiece. Wigan downing Leeds, but Leeds would be back. A
:38:29. > :38:34.grand final revival inspired by the biggest little man in rugby. In the
:38:34. > :38:38.Four Nations, England beat the world champions, but in the final,
:38:38. > :38:48.the kangaroos provided the knock- out punch, a perfect sendoff for
:38:48. > :38:50.
:38:50. > :39:00.the great Darren Lochear. A final call for three more reds. Wilko,
:39:00. > :39:00.
:39:00. > :40:30.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 99 seconds
:40:30. > :40:34.Thank you very much Ngati Ranana. I hope you found that inspirational
:40:34. > :40:43.and the Haka certainly inspired the hosts at the Rugby World Cup, where
:40:43. > :40:47.New Zealand danced to a winning tune. In theory, it was all too
:40:47. > :40:52.easy, New Zealand hadn't won the World Cup for 24 years, but they
:40:52. > :40:57.were the best team in the world and now they had home advantage. This
:40:57. > :41:04.was the World Cup of fractured perceptions all set against the
:41:04. > :41:13.real fracture of the Christ Church earthquake. Dan Carter, the best
:41:13. > :41:16.player in this best team, went down injured. And the screw in Ritchie's
:41:16. > :41:22.McCall's metatarsal meant the All Blacks would have to do it the hard
:41:22. > :41:26.way. And who might challenge them? Not England. On the field
:41:26. > :41:32.unconvincing, off it, uncontrollable. Whatever their
:41:32. > :41:39.World Cup target was, England miss today by a mile. -- missed it by a
:41:39. > :41:44.mile. Even Johnny missed. It was memorable for tonga, nearly. For
:41:44. > :41:49.Scotland, who did everything bar score when it mattered, they
:41:49. > :41:54.defended dogedly until it mattered. Ireland did finish one job,
:41:54. > :42:00.emerging unbeaten from their pool, victory over Australia opened up a
:42:00. > :42:04.pathway for them... Nearly. It was nearly Wales's World Cup. They
:42:04. > :42:08.would eventually be tipped into the black hole of a captain sent off
:42:08. > :42:13.and missed kicks. But until then, they lit up the tournament. Wales
:42:13. > :42:20.were beaten in the semi-final by France, the most mute nus crew at
:42:20. > :42:24.the World Cup, the worst it -- worst team it was said to reach the
:42:24. > :42:28.final. But on the night they advanced on New Zealand's Haka, and
:42:28. > :42:32.were the better team who lost. The best team won the World Cup, but
:42:32. > :42:40.how difficult it was for them and the World Cup was all the better
:42:40. > :42:45.for it being anything but easy. the very emotional World Cup
:42:45. > :42:51.victory. The All Blacks were not the only antipodeans to rule in
:42:51. > :42:55.2011. Australian Casey Stoner won the MotoGP world championship title
:42:55. > :43:00.N Formula One, the season was dominated by one team, one car and
:43:00. > :43:08.crucially, one man, from the very start. Pole position was the
:43:08. > :43:12.possession of Sebastien Vettel. Formula One, for some of us, it's
:43:12. > :43:22.all about instinct. You keep pushing to the limit. Sometimes
:43:22. > :43:23.
:43:23. > :43:29.beyond. The chasing pack are relentless in their pursuit.
:43:29. > :43:36.COMMENTATOR: Button is flying. Beautiful to list ton it. He goes
:43:36. > :43:39.round the outside. Alonso leads. Another brave and sensational move.
:43:39. > :43:47.When the moment of victory arrives...
:43:47. > :43:53.COMMENTATOR: The reigning world champion.... You feel invincible.
:43:53. > :43:59.It is an emotion beyond words. The youngest ever double world champion.
:44:00. > :44:08.COMMENTATOR: The new world champion, Sebastien Vettel. Now a time to
:44:08. > :44:11.reflect, but soon enough, the hunt resumes. The checkered flag has
:44:11. > :44:15.been waved on voting for this year's Sports Personality Of The
:44:15. > :44:22.Year. The phone lines are now closed. Please do not call as the
:44:22. > :44:32.vote won't count and you may still be charged. Here's a taster of a
:44:32. > :44:55.
:44:55. > :45:00.little something coming your way COMMENTATOR: Usain Bolt! So, the
:45:01. > :45:06.countdown is well and truly on. There's just 217 days to go until
:45:06. > :45:11.the Olympic flame is lit by this very torch and the greatest show on
:45:11. > :45:15.earth begins in London. That brings us on to our Lifetime Achievement
:45:15. > :45:21.Award winner who as an athlete is simply out of this world. He's an
:45:21. > :45:26.Olympic giant in every sense of the word. He put his family and his
:45:26. > :45:30.body through hell to achieve what he achieved. Had he stopped after
:45:30. > :45:40.Atlantic he wouldn't be remembered. -- Atlanta, he wouldn't be
:45:40. > :45:43.remembered. Four gold in a row. If anyone sees me go near a boat you
:45:43. > :45:47.have my permission to shoot me. Sydney established him as a
:45:47. > :45:54.sporting icon in Britain, if not the world. He would have won gold
:45:54. > :45:59.in each of the five Games and no athlete has ever done that in an
:45:59. > :46:07.endurance event. For us, it was everyday life. We always knew he
:46:07. > :46:11.was quite special. For us he was just dad. Every interview, every
:46:11. > :46:16.newspaper journalist was all about, are you going to win your fifth?
:46:16. > :46:26.Every time you have to say, yes, I am. He knew it was the most
:46:26. > :46:27.
:46:27. > :46:35.important six minutes of his life. 1997 he became a diabetic.
:46:35. > :46:39.normal person would have said, "I can't carry on." He wouldn't be the
:46:39. > :46:42.first to suggest that if you weren't performing in trials that
:46:42. > :46:46.you didn't deserve a place on the team, so there were different times
:46:46. > :46:52.in that four years. Is it worth it? Are the big Games worth going
:46:52. > :46:58.through this hassle for? Absolutely miserable and you could tell he was
:46:58. > :47:02.in sporting hell. Hold on boys, the Italians are coming strong. By the
:47:02. > :47:09.time he got his diabetes controlled as best he could he was back in
:47:09. > :47:19.full fitness and I have never seen him pull harder. He was showing
:47:19. > :47:21.
:47:21. > :47:28.himself, I'm the best in the world." There was so much riding on
:47:28. > :47:38.this race, it was very much very different to the previous one.
:47:38. > :47:38.
:47:38. > :47:41.COMMENTATOR: Five in a row. What a great limb wan quan -- limb quan.
:47:41. > :47:50.- Olympian. We should have been saying thank you to him, but he was
:47:50. > :47:54.saying it to us. He's truly inspirational. He's my daddy!
:47:55. > :47:58.present the trophy I'm delighted to be joined by Her Royal Highness,
:47:58. > :48:00.the Princess Royal, herself a former recipient of the Sports
:48:00. > :48:05.Personality of the Year. Also here are family friends and colleagues
:48:05. > :48:06.from the world of rowing to honour this year's Lifetime Achievement
:48:06. > :48:16.Award winner, it's Sir Steve Redgrave.
:48:16. > :48:16.
:48:16. > :49:51.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 99 seconds
:49:51. > :49:55.What an ovation and well deserved. We'll hear from Sir Steve in one
:49:55. > :50:00.moment, but ma'am, how would you sum up this man's achievements?
:50:00. > :50:05.think he does everything the hard way, but he's been a pleasure to
:50:05. > :50:09.have been able to give him one or two awards over the passage of time,
:50:09. > :50:12.but nothing gives my more pleasure than that, because it's a lifetime
:50:12. > :50:19.of achievement. It's hard to believe the first time I met this
:50:19. > :50:25.chap he was the quiet unassuming one. That was the first of his gold
:50:25. > :50:29.medals and we know how difficult it is or was to achieve that
:50:29. > :50:32.extraordinary level of success throughout his Olympic career. But,
:50:32. > :50:37.can I just add something that doesn't come out in there, just how
:50:37. > :50:42.much he's contributed in other ways? Frankly, I don't think we
:50:42. > :50:46.would have done nearly so well in our Olympic bid if it hadn't been
:50:46. > :50:53.for Steve's eloquance and passion in his delivery and the fact he
:50:53. > :50:56.also had some very, very pertinent instructions to give to some rather
:50:56. > :51:02.more experienced public speakers at the very important bid in Singapore,
:51:02. > :51:07.which may even have made the crucial difference. His fundraising
:51:07. > :51:11.activity. We have shed one -- shared one or two platforms for
:51:11. > :51:17.fellow athletes, but he's also continued that not just with his
:51:17. > :51:20.own foundation, but with sports up and down the country. When it says
:51:20. > :51:29.lifetime achievement, this really does mean it, through sport, but
:51:29. > :51:39.everything he's done during sport and since and I hope this is
:51:39. > :51:48.
:51:48. > :51:51.Lifetime Achievement Award so far! APPLAUSE
:51:51. > :51:57.Your Royal Highness, thank you very much for giving me another award.
:51:57. > :52:02.Two lick pim gold medals and this BBC Lifetime Achievement Award.
:52:02. > :52:07.Thank you very much for recognising me in this way -- Olympic. I never
:52:07. > :52:09.thought I would be here again, eleven years ago, when I was
:52:09. > :52:11.receiving the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and I
:52:11. > :52:18.thought that was probably going to be the last time that I achieved an
:52:18. > :52:24.award of any sort. I suppose I better explain this in some ways.
:52:24. > :52:27.Rumour has it hive been trying out for the 2012 Games and it's gone
:52:27. > :52:31.wrong. It's not really. I had a small operation yesterday morning.
:52:32. > :52:38.This will be off tomorrow, so it's no big deal, but it looks pretty
:52:38. > :52:45.dramatic. To receive this lifetime achievement is a great honour for
:52:45. > :52:50.me, but without these people around me this would never happen. It's --
:52:50. > :52:54.I should have said eleven years ago that I didn't say and I'll get
:52:54. > :53:01.there shortly, to put it right, that Clive was the first guy that I
:53:01. > :53:08.actually went out on the water with, many years ago, 1976. That's how my
:53:08. > :53:12.career started. Then with Pete and we rowed up to junior level, but
:53:12. > :53:20.never selected to go to the world championships and then our paths
:53:20. > :53:25.went a separate way. 1980, with Adam Clist, being in the junior
:53:25. > :53:31.double, -- we won a silver medal and we were disgusted with that and
:53:31. > :53:35.walked out in different directions. From that we made British rowing
:53:35. > :53:40.stronger from that, the coaching and the support staff and it has
:53:40. > :53:45.made a real huge difference. All the guys that I have won Olympic
:53:45. > :53:50.goad medals with are here tonight, apart from one. And rye Holmes lost
:53:50. > :53:55.his life just over a year ago and it would have been great to see him
:53:55. > :53:59.here tonight. Unfortunately, from that point of view. I've had great
:53:59. > :54:04.memories with these guys, rowing up and down the river. The boring old
:54:04. > :54:10.sport going backwards! 2012 is only a few days away. It's going to be a
:54:10. > :54:14.great sporting year. We have had a great sporting year in 2011. I
:54:15. > :54:19.think 2012 will be even better and our rowing team is much, much
:54:19. > :54:22.stronger than any of the years that I was involved in the sport. Expect
:54:22. > :54:27.some big things, putting the pressure on the team now. One or
:54:27. > :54:31.two are standing to the side of me now. To the BBC for giving me this
:54:31. > :54:37.opportunity and that one person that I forgot to mention eleven
:54:37. > :54:43.years ago was my wife. I mentioned everybody else on that occasion,
:54:43. > :54:47.but forgot to mention my wife. My wife was an Olympic athlete in her
:54:47. > :54:52.own right. Silver and bronze at the Commonwealth Games and in her own
:54:52. > :54:57.right as an athlete and then has been the team doctor on and off for
:54:57. > :55:00.the last 15 years and now helping the team in their preparations for
:55:00. > :55:04.next year. Without family and friends, my parents and all the
:55:04. > :55:07.support that I've had from that close-knit family, I would never
:55:07. > :55:11.have been able to achieve the sort of things I've done within sports.
:55:11. > :55:15.The last eleven years have been trying to help others achieve other
:55:15. > :55:20.things and actually Sport Relief was actually put together in my
:55:20. > :55:23.front room at my house in 2000. That's going from strength to
:55:23. > :55:27.strength, so please go out there and run your mile or be part of the
:55:27. > :55:31.mile next year and make it one of the biggest events the world has
:55:31. > :55:36.ever seen and that money raised will help people around the world
:55:37. > :55:40.doing some very special things. Thank you to all these guys here
:55:40. > :55:44.today and Princess Royal and the BBC to put that wrong right of my
:55:44. > :55:49.wife of thanking her for all her support through thick and thin.
:55:49. > :55:53.This was one of the minor things in my career, but she has helped me
:55:53. > :55:57.through most of the major ones as well. Thank you to all of you for
:55:58. > :56:07.giving me this opportunity. APPLAUSE
:56:08. > :56:36.
:56:36. > :56:39.Congratulations to Sir Steve Britain is winning. For the fourth
:56:39. > :56:49.time Chrissie Wellington is world champion. So many of the best
:56:49. > :56:59.athletes on the planet are now from this island. It's gold for Keri-
:56:59. > :57:13.
:57:13. > :57:23.Anne Payne of Britain. In water. On land. Across the globe.
:57:23. > :57:24.
:57:24. > :57:32.champion of the world. World champion. Helen Jenkins is the
:57:32. > :57:39.world number one. When we salute a truly golden generation of British
:57:39. > :57:49.men and women. Rebecca Adlington, who in 2011 took it to the world
:57:49. > :57:50.
:57:50. > :57:54.and won! Some great achievements and there was more success at the
:57:54. > :58:01.Special Olympics, where Great Britain won an incredible 187
:58:01. > :58:05.medals, including 72 golds. At the European paralimb pick -- the
:58:05. > :58:10.European Paralympic Swimming Championships the GB team took 27
:58:10. > :58:13.golds with Susie Rodgers winning five titles. It's almost time to
:58:13. > :58:18.reveal the name of the Sports Personality of the Year, but before
:58:18. > :58:28.we do, let's now take some time to reflect and remember so many of our
:58:28. > :58:28.
:58:28. > :01:41.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 99 seconds
:01:41. > :01:46.sporting friends, who we sadly lost A wonderful tribute interest to
:01:46. > :01:50.some of the very special -- there to some of the very special friends.
:01:50. > :02:00.We miss you all. In a moment we'll reveal the 2011 Sports Personality
:02:00. > :02:09.
:02:09. > :02:13.of the Year, but first, here's a reminder of the ten contenders:
:02:14. > :02:19.would feel humble that people voted for me. It's been a truly wonderful
:02:19. > :02:22.year for me and this would cap it off. Just to be nominated is a
:02:22. > :02:28.great feeling. It's probably the highest accolade you can have
:02:28. > :02:31.bestowed on you. Just to be a nominee is massive, but to win it,
:02:31. > :02:35.I would be quite lost for words. would be one of the highlights of
:02:35. > :02:39.my career so far. There's a great list of winners and one I would
:02:39. > :02:47.like to try to join. We don't play sport for accolades, but it would
:02:47. > :02:53.be incredible. It's time. Ladies and gentlemen, to announce the
:02:53. > :02:58.winner of the 2011 Sports Personality of the Year. To present
:02:58. > :03:08.the awards, please welcome two sporting legends, Sir Bobby
:03:08. > :03:16.
:03:16. > :03:20.Charlton and Baroness Tanni Grey- All votes have been counted and
:03:20. > :03:30.independently verified. Tanni, if I can ask you to reveal who is in
:03:30. > :04:08.
:04:08. > :04:18.third place. Third place is Mo Congratulationss to Mo Farah. Tanni,
:04:18. > :04:48.
:04:48. > :04:53.the runner up, please. And the BBC Sports Personality Of
:04:53. > :05:03.The Year 2011? The 2011 BBC Sports Personality Of The Year is... Mark
:05:03. > :05:03.
:05:03. > :06:21.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 99 seconds
:06:21. > :06:27.I'm absolutely speechless, really. I think a few of the guise, my
:06:27. > :06:32.team-mates, they'll say that's a rare thing, you know. But it's
:06:32. > :06:38.those guys, without those guys this wouldn't even be close to possible,
:06:38. > :06:44.I guarantee you that. I had a group of guys in Copenhagen who road
:06:44. > :06:54.incredible this year. That brought a rainbow Jersey back to Great
:06:54. > :06:54.
:06:54. > :06:59.Britain after nearly half a decade. That's a massive thing. Erm...
:06:59. > :07:02.Really, I'd like to thank obviously those guys as well, everyone who
:07:02. > :07:12.supports me. Obviously my girlfriend and her little bump as
:07:12. > :07:12.
:07:12. > :07:16.well. Yeah, obviously well done to all the other people, the nine
:07:16. > :07:20.other nominations, just to even be nominated in the top ten this year
:07:20. > :07:25.in such an incredible year for British sport, absolutely
:07:25. > :07:31.incredible, that we can provide, produce such champions from such a
:07:31. > :07:37.small place. It's remarkable. Then to be nominated against nine
:07:37. > :07:42.inspirational people this year, to get this, it's, really I'm lost for
:07:42. > :07:49.words. I want to thank everybody, who supports me here and everybody
:07:49. > :07:56.at home who's voted. I think it shows, for me, it's a landmark in
:07:56. > :08:01.cycling. I think I take this on behalf of cycling. For cycling to
:08:01. > :08:06.be recognised in a non-Olympic year, a few years ago, it's unheard of.
:08:06. > :08:11.It would have been unthought of. It's happened you know. It's
:08:11. > :08:17.incredible to see. It's incredible to be part of that. And to see the
:08:17. > :08:23.amount of people out riding bikes to work, commuting and doing it as
:08:23. > :08:28.a hobby. They can appreciate what it is to ride. You know, the pain
:08:28. > :08:36.that it takes, the dedication it takes. It's the same with every
:08:36. > :08:40.sport. That's why we're doing so great. We're just putting so much
:08:40. > :08:45.in. You've seen the returns. Now I'm going to shut up now because
:08:45. > :08:53.I'm just mumbling on. Thank you everybody, thank you. It's an
:08:53. > :08:57.honour. APPLAUSE
