:00:26. > :00:32.Good evening and welcome to titanic Belfast, where some of the biggest

:00:33. > :00:39.names in sport will be arriving over the next hour before going across to

:00:40. > :00:43.the arena for the 62nd BBC Sports Personality of the Year. It is a

:00:44. > :00:50.cliche, but this is a glittering ceremony. And it starts with the red

:00:51. > :00:55.carpet. You have to go back to 1954, I doubt there was a red carpet when

:00:56. > :00:58.Sir Chris Chester Fay became the first winner. And that is what we

:00:59. > :01:04.are going to do, chat away for the next six to minutes. With me, the

:01:05. > :01:07.Golden girl of the Olympic boxing ring, Nicola Adams. And also packing

:01:08. > :01:13.a punch, though McCullum, my Coke presenter. Yes, it is wonderful to

:01:14. > :01:16.have you here, Nicola. It is nerve-wracking being on the red

:01:17. > :01:24.carpet? It is, but I am guessing they will take it in their stride. A

:01:25. > :01:30.those 12 contenders hoping to become the BBC Sports Personality of the

:01:31. > :01:35.Year for 2015. Here they are. COMMENTATOR: Lizzie Armitstead leads

:01:36. > :01:50.the way for Great Britain! It is gold for Lizzie Armitstead! Yes! An

:01:51. > :01:55.absolute belter! She comes back to win her second world title, Jessica

:01:56. > :02:00.Ennis-Hill! Mo Farah striking for gold again! Mo Farah is the world

:02:01. > :02:09.champion again! Chris Froome is Britain's two-time

:02:10. > :02:13.winner of the Tour de France. Tyson Fury, the self-styled Gypsy King, is

:02:14. > :02:21.the heavyweight champion of the world. Lewis Hamilton has won his

:02:22. > :02:27.third World Championship! He is the 2015 World Championship Great

:02:28. > :02:37.Britain have done it! Andy Murray unbeaten in Davis Cup! Adam Peaty

:02:42. > :02:47.been done at the World Championships for men. Rutherford completes his

:02:48. > :02:54.Grand Slam just Olympic, European, Commonwealth and now world champion.

:02:55. > :03:09.And the Leeds Rhinos have gone and done it again! Max Whitlock is the

:03:10. > :03:15.pommel horse World Championships so, how do we find out who is the winner

:03:30. > :03:34.will be able to vote on the landline and on your mobile. Full terms and

:03:35. > :03:38.conditions are on the website. Sit back and enjoy and we will find out

:03:39. > :03:43.soon enough who is going to be this year's Sports Personality of the

:03:44. > :03:48.Year. And what a way to start, as we move down onto the red carpet. 12

:03:49. > :03:52.nominees tonight. One of them with me now, world road race champion and

:03:53. > :03:56.cycling hero Lizzie Armitstead. Claire has given me some advice of

:03:57. > :04:00.what to say and what not to say on the red carpet. Apparently what I

:04:01. > :04:05.have to say is, who are you wearing? My dress is Estella McCartney! You

:04:06. > :04:09.look amazing, and so you should. This year you have been top of the

:04:10. > :04:13.world, you have been in a hospital bed, and now here you are woman

:04:14. > :04:18.nominated for Sports Personality of the Year. All the pain worth it to

:04:19. > :04:23.be here? Absolutely. I am still in shock. It is quite surreal to be at

:04:24. > :04:27.the Sports Personality of the Year. As a cyclist I am recognised but in

:04:28. > :04:31.the sporting arena, it is different. Feeling proud and happy. What is it

:04:32. > :04:35.like when you are nominated and people start talking about you?

:04:36. > :04:40.People like Mark Cavendish says, she has put women's cycling on the map?

:04:41. > :04:45.It obviously makes me very proud and appreciative that women's cycling is

:04:46. > :04:49.being taken seriously now. To have a small part in that makes me very

:04:50. > :04:52.proud. Cycling has done so well at Sports Personality. Chris Froome

:04:53. > :04:57.winning the Tour de France again this year of course. I was there

:04:58. > :05:01.when you got silver at London 2012. That was when you got it all started

:05:02. > :05:10.just fully deserved now to be world champion. But now, surely, the 2016,

:05:11. > :05:14.you must be, bring it on! Yes, obviously, that is the ultimate

:05:15. > :05:22.goal, gold in Rio is all I think about now. I know, my brother is

:05:23. > :05:26.that an amateur club in cycling, and he has to wait months to get into

:05:27. > :05:30.the velodrome. Participation in some sports has gone down but in cycling

:05:31. > :05:35.it has gone through the roof. How good is it to be part of that

:05:36. > :05:39.legacy? I love being part of the cycling boom. I could not have been

:05:40. > :05:42.here at a better time. Going home now, there is families on their

:05:43. > :05:47.bikes every weekend. It makes me feel proud to be part of that. What

:05:48. > :05:53.would your advice be to any aspiring young cyclists? Erm, I would say,

:05:54. > :05:58.you do not need the best kit to be the best. I started on a pretty

:05:59. > :06:03.useless like and got my results. It does not have to be as expensive as

:06:04. > :06:07.you think. Lizzie Armitstead, absolutely outstanding. That has

:06:08. > :06:13.made my night already and we are only just now! The stars still

:06:14. > :06:16.gathering here on the red carpet. Delighted to say one of the most

:06:17. > :06:27.decorated Gaelic footballers Ulster has ever produced is with me now.

:06:28. > :06:31.Legend of Armagh and now manager of Crossmaglen. What does it feel like

:06:32. > :06:35.to be here tonight? It is amazing. The only other time I was on a red

:06:36. > :06:40.carpet was on my wedding day. This is something I have watched for many

:06:41. > :06:45.years. It is fantastic for Belfast and for the north. But is fairly

:06:46. > :06:51.posh to have a red carpet on your wedding day?! Yes, it was a posh do.

:06:52. > :06:57.She insisted! How are you finding being a manager now? To be honest,

:06:58. > :07:00.this is my second year. The first year was finding my feet. I played

:07:01. > :07:05.with a lot of the guys I was managing. It is a different

:07:06. > :07:11.relationship. This year we have had a lot more success. When you have

:07:12. > :07:15.that, you enjoy it more. Well, we are on the red carpet, as we keep

:07:16. > :07:19.saying. You have been meeting the stars on your way down - who are you

:07:20. > :07:23.most looking forward to meeting tonight? I hope to see Rory McIlory.

:07:24. > :07:28.I don't know if Graeme McDowell is here. I am an avid amateur golfer,

:07:29. > :07:36.who absolutely loves watching those guys. And I marvel at what they can

:07:37. > :07:43.do week in, week out, so it would be lovely to meet those two. If Barry

:07:44. > :07:48.McGuigan was here, I would just pass out on the floor. This is Northern

:07:49. > :07:54.Ireland history right here. The wonderful Dennis Taylor is with me.

:07:55. > :07:57.But first of all, take me back to your Sports Personality in 1972. A

:07:58. > :08:03.long time ago but it was wonderful because I received it from Princess

:08:04. > :08:07.Anne. Believe it or not, Dame Mary Peters, athletics leads the way,

:08:08. > :08:11.with 17 winners. Jessica Ennis-Hill is on the list, as is Mo Farah. Both

:08:12. > :08:16.of them rightly so. And Greg Rutherford as well. And Greg

:08:17. > :08:22.Rutherford as well. Yes, very strong. I hope it does not split the

:08:23. > :08:30.vote. I know who I am voting for. Someone from the BBC is on the roof,

:08:31. > :08:36.they would sniper you for! But it is lovely to have it here in Belfast,

:08:37. > :08:40.isn't it, Dennis? 1985, that scoundrel Barry McGuigan to it away

:08:41. > :08:45.from you? We were just talking about that. The delightful Mary, we were

:08:46. > :08:50.sitting together ringside when obviously, beat Pedrosa, it was an

:08:51. > :08:54.unbelievable night at Queen's Park football ground. Unbelievable night,

:08:55. > :08:59.wasn't it, Mary? Which one had the most viewers on the BBC, or on

:09:00. > :09:03.television, was it Barry Orr yourself? I think it might have been

:09:04. > :09:09.you? I get stick off the snooker boys if I keep mentioning that 18.5

:09:10. > :09:13.million. The biggest BBC Two audience ever, the biggest audience

:09:14. > :09:20.after midnight. I have forgotten about it - as you can tell! You are

:09:21. > :09:24.both two absolutely wonderful sons and daughters of Northern Ireland.

:09:25. > :09:30.What does it need to have this here at this arena? It is very special.

:09:31. > :09:34.Belfast has opened its heart. I have been around town this morning and it

:09:35. > :09:37.is amazing. Yes, Gary Lineker woke up somewhere at four o'clock in the

:09:38. > :09:42.morning after a night out in Belfast. A couple of weeks ago we

:09:43. > :09:47.were at the waterfront with Ronnie O'Sullivan and Jimmy white, and I

:09:48. > :09:51.was doing some trick shots. 1800 people. Northern Ireland qualified,

:09:52. > :09:55.Ireland qualified. I stood up and said, what a fantastic week for

:09:56. > :10:00.Irish sport. I said, Daniel O'Donnell got through in Strictly

:10:01. > :10:08.Come Dancing last night, and it brought the house town! Two

:10:09. > :10:12.absolutely Jens there. A warm welcome to viewers on the BBC News

:10:13. > :10:17.Channel. We are live on the red carpet here. I am delighted to say

:10:18. > :10:22.Kevin Sinfield from rugby league fame is with me. The first time a

:10:23. > :10:27.rugby league player has been in the top 12. How pleased are you to be

:10:28. > :10:32.here tonight? Really delighted and very proud of the sport I come from.

:10:33. > :10:40.To be the first is quite ground-breaking for us as a sport.

:10:41. > :10:46.Hopefully we will get 34 minutes, instead of the usual 8-10 seconds on

:10:47. > :10:54.the TV. It is huge for the grassroots of our game. -- three or

:10:55. > :10:58.four minutes. You do have a rowdy bunch of Leeds Rhinos with you

:10:59. > :11:05.tonight. It is important for you to give something back now you have

:11:06. > :11:10.switched codes, so how important is that? Very much. Rugby league has

:11:11. > :11:15.given me everything in my career so far from the age of seven. So,

:11:16. > :11:21.certainly I will never forget that. I have left the rhinos, but I am a

:11:22. > :11:26.keen supporter. I played alongside a lot of the guys for 10-15 years and

:11:27. > :11:31.it has been brilliant. Those friendships will never go. I owe

:11:32. > :11:34.rugby league everything. -Sinfield, enjoy your night. Catch up with

:11:35. > :11:47.those Leeds Rhinos! Kevin Sinfield is a legend. And

:11:48. > :11:50.athletics of course plays such a huge part tonight when you look

:11:51. > :12:02.through the names in the nominations list. I have got Alison Curbishley

:12:03. > :12:10.and Steve Cram with me now. Forget Posh and! BecksHe is from a better

:12:11. > :12:13.part of the north-east than I am! Each of them have got a very

:12:14. > :12:19.different story and I think that is the beauty. Unfortunately it splits

:12:20. > :12:22.the athletics vote. So everybody out there, double up. You have got to

:12:23. > :12:29.vote for each one of them. Greg has had phenomenal three or four years,

:12:30. > :12:33.but so has Mo. And Jess was the comeback story. They have all got

:12:34. > :12:37.different reasons for you to vote for them. But it is great for

:12:38. > :12:42.athletics. People will talk about the physical demands of what Jessica

:12:43. > :12:47.Ennis-Hill has been through this year in terms of starting a family,

:12:48. > :12:53.retraining. It is not just that, it is the perspective which starting a

:12:54. > :12:55.family gives you as well, to keep the edge and the single-mindedness

:12:56. > :13:01.to become world champion? Absolutely right. Being the sportsperson you

:13:02. > :13:04.are very, very selfish. When you hear Jess talk this year it has all

:13:05. > :13:08.been about... It is very different now, her perspective on life has

:13:09. > :13:13.changed. Probably every woman who has ever had a baby now hates her

:13:14. > :13:19.because look at the stage of her. She is phenomenal. But back in March

:13:20. > :13:24.she could hardly walk. She still has an Achilles problem. For me, she

:13:25. > :13:30.gets my vote. Sorry, Greg and Mo! Thank you very much, you two. You

:13:31. > :13:36.get to the bar, Steve. One man who has got more discipline and Steve

:13:37. > :13:43.Cram of course is Mo Farah, who is nominated tonight. He is unable to

:13:44. > :13:50.be here, but let's just remind ourselves of the majesty of Mo.

:13:51. > :13:56.The reason why I run is because I enjoy it so much. I love running, it

:13:57. > :14:01.is what I do and what I am good at. STEVE CRAM: Mo Farah is the world

:14:02. > :14:05.champion again! From a speed perspective they just

:14:06. > :14:09.cannot match him, and that is a weapon which is deadly for the other

:14:10. > :14:12.guys. I just want to continue my career winning medals for my

:14:13. > :14:18.country, breaking records and continuing on while I can.

:14:19. > :14:22.BRENDAN FOSTER: The greatest distance runner we have ever had.

:14:23. > :14:26.I believe he is so physically gifted, he has got the speed along

:14:27. > :14:32.with the stamina which no-one can match right now. I want to be the

:14:33. > :14:35.guy who won the most medals for his country.

:14:36. > :14:39.Every year in Sports Personality there are firsts and this year is no

:14:40. > :14:44.exception. It is the first time a female footballer has been nominated

:14:45. > :14:48.in the top 12. Lucy Bronze is with me now. Your first time on the red

:14:49. > :14:52.carpet. You are looking fabulous. How are you feeling?

:14:53. > :14:59.A little bit nervous. I wasn't expecting this. I didn't know what

:15:00. > :15:03.to expect, to be honest. And this my first event on the red carpet and

:15:04. > :15:08.being in the spotlight. It is exciting to be a part of it. I'm

:15:09. > :15:12.sure you are, and we are looking forward to it. I know you are a lot

:15:13. > :15:15.more comfortable in your football kit. You've done so much for women's

:15:16. > :15:21.sport in general. How pleased with you on the achievement and where you

:15:22. > :15:24.put women's sport on the map now? All the girls involved in the

:15:25. > :15:29.England team and the league, we are so excited and so proud with what we

:15:30. > :15:32.are able to do. It is not just us but the little girls and boys of the

:15:33. > :15:37.future. How we can change the game now is going to bode well for the

:15:38. > :15:42.future. I'm excited to see how it turns out. Every success. Good luck

:15:43. > :15:46.for tonight. And from one nomination to another. How embarrassing is

:15:47. > :15:52.this. We've worn the same shoes. People are going to talk. Everyone

:15:53. > :15:57.is like, who the heck is there beside him? Greg Rutherford, how are

:15:58. > :16:06.you? I'm looking forward to an interesting evening. Interesting

:16:07. > :16:11.shoes. A good choice. You are the self proclaimed ginger one. It is

:16:12. > :16:16.circumstance. Even with an Olympic gold, given it was "Super Saturday,"

:16:17. > :16:20.there was in many ways a shadow to step out of and you've done that in

:16:21. > :16:24.fine style in 2015. You must be really proud. Absolutely. A lot of

:16:25. > :16:30.hard work goes into everything we do. I've been a pressure athlete for

:16:31. > :16:33.ten years now. I've had a few successes but this year backs up

:16:34. > :16:39.everything I've had previous. I am proud. Hopefully a few more years

:16:40. > :16:45.can come. I want to put this into perspective for anybody watching at

:16:46. > :16:54.home. There are only four other Britons, can you name them? Daley

:16:55. > :16:59.Thompson, Sally Gunnell and Linford Christie I believe. Sensational. You

:17:00. > :17:03.are being honoured tonight but that will be remembered in 100 years. I

:17:04. > :17:08.don't know. It is really weird for me, because they are names I grew up

:17:09. > :17:11.with. They are the names of British athletics and sport as well. So to

:17:12. > :17:19.have achieved what they have done, that's a big thing for me. Steve

:17:20. > :17:23.Cram made a really good point, and Alison Curbishley. The three names

:17:24. > :17:27.of athletics and there's a worry they could split the vote. Why would

:17:28. > :17:32.you say people should vote for you over the other two. Let's get it

:17:33. > :17:38.right. We are going to go to war on athletics, let's do it now? All of

:17:39. > :17:44.us have had a fantastic year. Mo just keeps on winning and for

:17:45. > :17:47.Jessica to come back so soon after having a child, that's incredible.

:17:48. > :17:51.Do you know the one thing I would say about what you achieved that

:17:52. > :17:56.wasn't as good for me? You didn't have a baby before you did what you

:17:57. > :18:03.did, which is why I want you to step this way as Jessica Ennis-Hill joins

:18:04. > :18:06.us now. I'm so sad Mo isn't here. It would have within the greatest

:18:07. > :18:14.moment ever. How do you feel tonight? Really excited. I love I

:18:15. > :18:19.love coming to these events. Everyone has talked about your

:18:20. > :18:22.story. More than anything I suppose this year was about making a family

:18:23. > :18:27.and everything that's amazing that comes with that. Yes, this year has

:18:28. > :18:32.been such a huge year for me and our family, and coming back to my career

:18:33. > :18:37.and my sport and doing what I did has been fantastic It's been a great

:18:38. > :18:41.year. You can feel the pressure of what you have to achieve. You were

:18:42. > :18:44.talking within your team of, if we could win a bronze, that would be

:18:45. > :18:49.amazing. In a strange way was that one of the real secrets to this

:18:50. > :18:52.recipe of success again? I think definitely being realistic and not

:18:53. > :18:58.overestimating what I wanted to achieve. Making sure I set realistic

:18:59. > :19:04.targets and didn't stretch them too much. You set yourself up for a

:19:05. > :19:07.fall. Coming back from having a child isn't the easiest thing. You

:19:08. > :19:11.have to take time to find your feet again really. I would say how can

:19:12. > :19:19.you top the year you've both had, but you can. We don't see 99% of

:19:20. > :19:24.what you guys do, the hard work, the loneliness of what you have to do.

:19:25. > :19:27.You get up most mornings when it's still dark. I'm assuming that all

:19:28. > :19:32.eyes are set on Rio? That's the plan. It is back into training for

:19:33. > :19:38.all the athletes now. We are trying to prepare the best we can for the

:19:39. > :19:45.summer. I've kept you, I really appreciate it. A word on each other.

:19:46. > :19:49.Jessica, we led through the list of Greg Rutherford. Daley Thompson,

:19:50. > :19:55.Linford Chrissie and Jonathan Edwards. A word about what Greg has

:19:56. > :20:00.done? He's been phenomenal. As athletes we have one or two moments

:20:01. > :20:08.to shine and Greg's delivered that on every level. And Jess, continues

:20:09. > :20:15.to raise the bar. Parred pardon the terrible pun. I remember 2012 and

:20:16. > :20:18.seeing that huge poster of her, and having so much pressure and going

:20:19. > :20:24.out and winning time after time. I've not had that before. It is so

:20:25. > :20:31.inspiring to see. I'm not going to try to influence the vote, but the

:20:32. > :20:38.VT is a nomination, he needed a car to do what he done. He needed a car.

:20:39. > :20:42.I only ever wanted to get to Formula One and win the championship. It is

:20:43. > :20:47.an experience, you have to try to enjoy, because you can't really

:20:48. > :20:53.understand it. I remember being at my dad's house, a one bedroom

:20:54. > :20:58.apartment and watching this and I wanted to do that and to think that

:20:59. > :21:04.today I am, 25 years later. I think he has matured beyond all scope.

:21:05. > :21:08.People realised he was always quick. He has matured and grown into

:21:09. > :21:17.something that's very special. If there were any doubters, this year

:21:18. > :21:23.put that to bed. There was never, I want to equal Fanja or Senna, but if

:21:24. > :21:31.I do, believe me I will grab it with both hands. Another jet setter from

:21:32. > :21:35.around the world. He's flown in from Florida, Graeme McDowell from

:21:36. > :21:39.Portrush. Good to see you and your lovely wife. What does it mean to be

:21:40. > :21:44.part of Sports Personality of the Year? We are unbelievably excited to

:21:45. > :21:47.be here. First time in Belfast and with everything going on in Northern

:21:48. > :21:52.Ireland, the Open championship. We wouldn't have missed it for the

:21:53. > :21:55.world. Surrounded by sporting heroes and sporting celebrities. Such a

:21:56. > :22:00.great buzz in the city. Really excited. Christen, this man always

:22:01. > :22:06.seems calm, cool and collected. Is he really like that at home? He. Is

:22:07. > :22:09.I'm secretly envious how cool and collected he can be. But he is

:22:10. > :22:16.wonderful, just as you would imagine him to be at home. He's the same. I

:22:17. > :22:22.know you you've added to your family, a little baby 15 months old?

:22:23. > :22:27.A 15 month old girl, in Florida. We are looking forward to getting home

:22:28. > :22:31.to see her. We'll record this and she can see it when she is old

:22:32. > :22:37.enough to understand. I get in trouble at home. You know how it

:22:38. > :22:44.goes. You've got to keep him in line. 2016, what does that hold for

:22:45. > :22:50.you? It was a great end to the year, 2015, a bumpy one midway but

:22:51. > :22:57.finished really strong. Feeling fit and healthy, like a lot of momentum.

:22:58. > :23:02.My off season is short. I'm in Hawaii on the PGA Tour. I feel like

:23:03. > :23:07.I'm settling into family life. I enjoy being at home with the family,

:23:08. > :23:11.but I really want to achieve great things in golf. In Portrush I need

:23:12. > :23:17.to be sharp and ready for that. Absolutely. We'll be there.

:23:18. > :23:27.Congratulations. Enjoy tonight and every success in 2016. Thank you

:23:28. > :23:31.both. Well, mine eyes have seen the glory of Espana '82.

:23:32. > :23:44.both. Well, mine eyes have seen the time. We all scratched our heads

:23:45. > :23:49.going into that campaign. I don't know if you can sum it up, it has

:23:50. > :23:54.been a journey we would never forget. When you come from such a

:23:55. > :23:58.low point that we were in for a time, it took time to build up. We

:23:59. > :24:02.built a stronger squad, a good team. We proved that. I think the campaign

:24:03. > :24:07.was a reflection on what the lads put in. They were tremendous over

:24:08. > :24:10.the ten games. We lost one game, and now we can look forward to France.

:24:11. > :24:15.When the draw was coming out there were two types of Northern Ireland

:24:16. > :24:19.fans, one said, give us the easiest team in each group, and the ones

:24:20. > :24:25.like me who said, I will take anybody. Bring them all on. Is that

:24:26. > :24:30.the attitude in the camp, whatever, let's have it? Our best results were

:24:31. > :24:34.against Russia and Portugal. We look forward to the tournament. I

:24:35. > :24:38.certainly believe that playing Poland and Ukraine next in the

:24:39. > :24:41.opening two games gives us a real opportunity to take points. We look

:24:42. > :24:47.forward to playing the Germans in Paris. You are a legend. Let's bring

:24:48. > :24:54.in one of the men who has flourished. Hello mate. For me he's

:24:55. > :24:58.the coach of the year. Is he coach of next year as well? I hope he gets

:24:59. > :25:02.it. He's been fantastic since he came in. It's been a process that's

:25:03. > :25:08.not just been over the last year or two but it has taken three, maybe

:25:09. > :25:12.four years. All credit to Michael, he's managed to achieve something we

:25:13. > :25:17.didn't think was possible. He gave us belief that we could do it.

:25:18. > :25:21.That's key to me, what you said, he made you think you could do it.

:25:22. > :25:27.There was that mentality. We felt so far away. How did this man make you

:25:28. > :25:33.believe? He's brought the best out of the whole team. I spoke to Gareth

:25:34. > :25:38.McColly before we qualified and they were talking when, not if. After the

:25:39. > :25:42.last campaigns sorry, the campaign before qualification. It wasn't a

:25:43. > :25:46.great campaign by ourselves. Michael got the stats up and talked us

:25:47. > :25:51.through things. Things maybe we weren't looking at. Don't want to go

:25:52. > :25:56.into too much detail. He looked at things beyond what we were able to

:25:57. > :26:03.see and brought it to our attention and we were able to change a lot of

:26:04. > :26:08.those things and it paid off. No-one from Northern Ireland is going to

:26:09. > :26:11.pay to good on a beach. They need to know that. On behalf of everyone

:26:12. > :26:15.watching in Northern Ireland, thank you so much and enjoy the next year,

:26:16. > :26:20.let alone tonight. Thank you. Thank you. The Davis Cup team winner Andy

:26:21. > :26:25.Murray is with me tonight. Fresh from that win of the it must be

:26:26. > :26:30.amazing to come here tonight and celebrate again. It's great to be

:26:31. > :26:34.around all of the team. We've got a great relationship. I've known a lot

:26:35. > :26:39.of the team for a long time. The captain coached me when I was 11

:26:40. > :26:43.years old. My brother was on the team as well. Really great to do it

:26:44. > :26:48.with all of them. Happy we've all been able to make it. And we can see

:26:49. > :26:51.the team joining us now, including your brother behind us. How

:26:52. > :26:55.different is it to competing on your own to having the team and being

:26:56. > :26:59.part of that? It is obviously different. The rest of the year

:27:00. > :27:06.pretty much relying on ourselves, whereas you have to put trust in

:27:07. > :27:10.your team. We have that. It's been a five-year process to get to the

:27:11. > :27:16.final and eventually winning it, a lot of players had played their part

:27:17. > :27:20.in helping us win the Davis Cup. Everyone has done an amazing job, so

:27:21. > :27:25.I'm glad that everyone is here and able to make it. We'll have a good

:27:26. > :27:30.time tonight. And I believe this is your first time in Northern Ireland?

:27:31. > :27:34.First time, amazingly. Are we giving you a good enough welcome? I only

:27:35. > :27:40.arrived 30 minutes ago. I was training in Dubai and I just landed

:27:41. > :27:44.today. Seems nice and hopefully we'll have a good night. And you are

:27:45. > :27:47.of course in the top 12. What would it mean to you to lift the Sports

:27:48. > :27:53.Personality of the Year for the second time? It would be nice,

:27:54. > :27:59.obviously. There's a lot of great athletes that are also up for the

:28:00. > :28:05.award. I'm just happy to be part of that, to be recognised for the year

:28:06. > :28:09.that I've had in tennis. We'll see what happens. There's a lot of

:28:10. > :28:15.deserving winners this evening. Too true. You and your team, go and

:28:16. > :28:18.enjoy some hospitality. Have a great first time in Northern Ireland. Andy

:28:19. > :28:23.Murray, thank you very much. Colin is with somebody special. You say

:28:24. > :28:28.special, but this man ain't that special. James Nesbitt, what is it

:28:29. > :28:34.like to be surrounded by responsibility royalty. Like the

:28:35. > :28:38.proverbial, can't say it, it is family television and we're live! It

:28:39. > :28:46.is something I've grown up that we are in Belfast and the timing that

:28:47. > :28:50.he has appeared for Coleraine. An outstanding achievement. Something

:28:51. > :28:55.that hasn't been mentioned, should it be Republic of Ireland's

:28:56. > :29:01.achievement in back to back Six Nations titles? I was at

:29:02. > :29:06.Murrayfield. An incredibly exciting climax when England missed out,

:29:07. > :29:09.which was devastating for us, Colin. And Northern Ireland of course, so

:29:10. > :29:15.it is thrilling that Belfast has this. We are big football fans but I

:29:16. > :29:20.actually enjoy the odd years of Sports Personality of the Year,

:29:21. > :29:25.because 16, 18, the even years, a big football tournament. This is

:29:26. > :29:29.athletics. This is boxing. This is swimming. This is cycling and the

:29:30. > :29:35.achievements have been unbelievable in 2015 on a world stage. It is

:29:36. > :29:40.just, what I think is great about it is that kids are still incredibly

:29:41. > :29:45.fascinated with sport. Sporting heroes haven't gone out of fashion

:29:46. > :29:49.and we've got them across a whole range and spectrum of sports. That's

:29:50. > :29:52.what makes this year special, but this is all about Northern Ireland

:29:53. > :29:57.tonight and it is so thrilling. I hope Michael is up on that stage

:29:58. > :30:00.picking something up. AP McCoy, a lifetime achievement. That's

:30:01. > :30:04.probably why we are here in Belfast. Like a full stop, he's done the

:30:05. > :30:11.book, got the film and now the lifetime achievement. And he is

:30:12. > :30:15.still younger than me. AP, he will probably take up golf. He'll

:30:16. > :30:20.probably be on the European Tour in a couple of years. Enjoy it. You are

:30:21. > :30:27.in a posher seat than me. But enjoy it. Thank you very much.

:30:28. > :30:33.A lot of proud people in this city tonight, none more so than the Lord

:30:34. > :30:39.Mayor of Belfast. Use a fantastic for Belfast, to put it mildly.

:30:40. > :30:43.Absolutely brilliant for the city to have. A further demonstration of

:30:44. > :30:48.whether city is at in terms of its confidence and its optimism. We have

:30:49. > :30:57.major events all year. And you are a bit of a sports fan yourself? Oh,

:30:58. > :31:02.yes, snooker, darts, GAA, you name it. And boxing as well. And of

:31:03. > :31:06.course we have grown our own world-renowned heroes in the

:31:07. > :31:10.sporting field. It is fantastic that Sports Personality is here this

:31:11. > :31:17.year. We certainly do punch above our weight for a small country.

:31:18. > :31:18.Absolutely. George best, Alex Higgins, Dennis Taylor, Rory

:31:19. > :31:24.McIlory, you could go on and on. It is fantastic. For such a small city,

:31:25. > :31:29.we produce a great amount of sports stars on the world stage. You go and

:31:30. > :31:35.meet a few of your heroes. Thank you very much indeed, Lord Mayor.

:31:36. > :31:40.The stars keep arriving, as we count down to Sports Personality of the

:31:41. > :31:46.Year 2015 in the SSE Arena. We are just over the way at the Belfast

:31:47. > :31:50.Titanic, and this is where they get their accreditation. It does not

:31:51. > :31:54.matter who you are, you have to get accreditation. At the moment AP

:31:55. > :31:59.McCoy is standing at a desk, and they are like, name? AP McCoy... And

:32:00. > :32:03.he gets a little badge. You can remind yourself just how much

:32:04. > :32:13.Northern Ireland has punched above its weight in 2015.

:32:14. > :32:22.COMMENTATOR: He has done it! The World Snooker Championships it if

:32:23. > :32:38.I've! -- the world snooker champion 1985!

:32:39. > :32:44.He has got him with a right! Fantastic! Best! Beautiful football.

:32:45. > :32:57.Genius! Northern Ireland, with a population

:32:58. > :33:02.of just 1.8 million people, has consistently provided sport with an

:33:03. > :33:08.abundance of iconic figures of the past, and continues today to produce

:33:09. > :33:11.world-class competitors and leaders. Everybody on the street is delighted

:33:12. > :33:30.when we have our successes. We have a lot of very driven,

:33:31. > :33:35.determined people who are willing to go the extra mile. That is what it

:33:36. > :33:40.is all about. We have all very much got sport in our DNA. If you are in

:33:41. > :33:46.Northern Ireland, you are never a mile away from a green space. We do

:33:47. > :33:51.not sell off our football pictures. We do not have golf clubs that you

:33:52. > :33:55.have to spend ten grand to get into. There is a lesson there. If you make

:33:56. > :33:59.sport accessible to everybody, it does not matter how big or small the

:34:00. > :34:04.place is, you can do your thing. We do our thing in our own unique way.

:34:05. > :34:08.Road racing thrives. Sporting dynasty is are built. The Dunlop

:34:09. > :34:12.name is worn like a badge of honour around these roads. Sons and

:34:13. > :34:22.daughters follow mothers and fathers onto Gaelic pitches across the

:34:23. > :34:26.country. There is no other country in the world that has the level of

:34:27. > :34:33.support and passion and connection to that sportsperson. It is

:34:34. > :34:37.unsurpassed. I think sport has brought the community of Northern

:34:38. > :34:47.Ireland together. Hopefully it will continue. I think there is a number

:34:48. > :34:52.of ingredients. Charisma, fantastic talent and determination. The

:34:53. > :34:59.Northern Ireland team, the game against Hungary, we used 14 players,

:35:00. > :35:06.13 of them were born in Northern Ireland. A lot of our strength and

:35:07. > :35:11.success has come from that. For a little nation, we punch way above

:35:12. > :35:15.our weight. On an international stage we are very proud of where we

:35:16. > :35:19.come. I think that has something to do with how sportspeople play as

:35:20. > :35:23.well. People are passionate about sports. I think it is in the

:35:24. > :35:28.Northern Ireland DNA. It makes us very proud to be able to come home.

:35:29. > :35:40.People appreciate what we have done at putting a small country like

:35:41. > :35:43.Northern Ireland onto the world map. Fantastic moments there. Another

:35:44. > :35:48.young man who has been having some fantastic times this year is Adam

:35:49. > :35:52.Peaty, one of our top 12 tonight. The youngest in the top 12 - how do

:35:53. > :35:56.you feel being part of this tonight? It is amazing. It is not often you

:35:57. > :36:03.get to go down the red carpet with some really famous faces around you.

:36:04. > :36:07.It is nice to get proper smartphone once and enjoy it with the

:36:08. > :36:12.girlfriend as well. Nice to get a night off, I am sure you do not get

:36:13. > :36:16.much time with him? Not at all. He is always getting off somewhere to

:36:17. > :36:21.train all compete in different places. It is really nice to spend

:36:22. > :36:26.this night with him. It has been a superb year for you. Gold in the

:36:27. > :36:30.breast rug. What is next for you next year? I will just focus on the

:36:31. > :36:36.Olympics now. All the hard work has been done in the winter training

:36:37. > :36:41.programme. We will be in Australia for two months, get away from the

:36:42. > :36:47.cold, and the main focus is to enjoy the journey, really. I guess gold is

:36:48. > :36:51.in your sites for Rio next year? Yes, gold is in everyone's sites at

:36:52. > :36:55.it is who is willing to put the most effort in. I think I am willing to

:36:56. > :37:01.make that sacrifice. Hopefully I will get one of those lanes, so I

:37:02. > :37:06.can fight for gold. Just a word on tonight - who are you looking

:37:07. > :37:10.forward to seeing most? Actually, let's take a look at your shoes

:37:11. > :37:18.tonight. You have made a huge effort tonight. Those are something else!

:37:19. > :37:22.Who are you wearing? Ted who is. We want you to have a fantastic night.

:37:23. > :37:26.Congratulations on making the top 12. Go and enjoy yourselves in the

:37:27. > :37:34.reception and good luck for Rio next year. Thank you.

:37:35. > :37:42.Usually the red carpet is crazy and you miss people as they go past, but

:37:43. > :37:48.we have landed on our feet again. AP McCoy, and JP McManus with me now.

:37:49. > :37:53.How do you some up his career? He is a great man and he has stood the

:37:54. > :37:57.test of time. And also, it has to be said, Tony, we talk about individual

:37:58. > :38:03.sportspeople and there is a legion of people who have made it possible

:38:04. > :38:06.for you? Very much so. Right through from the owners, the trainers, the

:38:07. > :38:11.horses I was lucky enough to write. Horse racing is a wonderful sport. I

:38:12. > :38:15.have pretty much lived all my life in horse racing and could not have

:38:16. > :38:19.picked anything better. How strange is it knowing that you have won this

:38:20. > :38:25.time, and you get more time to think about what you are going to say? I

:38:26. > :38:30.often wished I knew I was going to win all the time, it would have made

:38:31. > :38:34.life a lot easier. It is different. In 2010 when I won Sports

:38:35. > :38:38.Personality, I did not know. There is an element of surprise. Whereas

:38:39. > :38:42.this time I have known for a few weeks. And it is very special. I

:38:43. > :38:51.look at the names on the trophy and it is a very prestigious award.

:38:52. > :38:57.People like Sir Alex Ferguson and Pele, to have my name beside them, I

:38:58. > :39:01.am very proud. JP, I read a quote about what united you two, and it

:39:02. > :39:06.said you were hell bent on winning. You were addicted to winning. Is

:39:07. > :39:10.that about right? I would say that is pretty accurate. Thank you very

:39:11. > :39:20.much for talking to us. Enjoy your night. We can only say

:39:21. > :39:25.congratulations like everybody else. Two of the smartest men in boxing,

:39:26. > :39:31.Barry McGuigan and Carl Frampton with me now. You won it back in

:39:32. > :39:35.1985, how special was that? It was fantastic. It is great first of all

:39:36. > :39:41.for it to be in Belfast. We need more events this in Belfast. We are

:39:42. > :39:45.thrilled to bits that it is here. The place is packed. They are

:39:46. > :39:49.queueing around the corner, it is amazing. It is incredible that those

:39:50. > :39:53.30 years have gone so fast. But it is a huge event, let's be honest. It

:39:54. > :39:59.is probably the biggest event in the sporting calendar from an awards

:40:00. > :40:07.ceremony point of view. I am glad that I am still here after 30 years

:40:08. > :40:13.with this man Jimmy is an incredible talent. Are you excited? Yes, I have

:40:14. > :40:17.got a massive fight on the horizon. I have been after it had tough years

:40:18. > :40:22.now, and we have got just ten weeks to go. So I am very excited to see

:40:23. > :40:28.what 2016 brings. I know you are used to making an entrance. So

:40:29. > :40:33.tonight, I am sure you will be able to enjoy this occasion? This kind of

:40:34. > :40:39.stuff I do not really like if I am being honest with you. Don't tell

:40:40. > :40:43.anybody at home! I just get a wee bit embarrassed sometimes. But it is

:40:44. > :40:56.all good fun. You two go and enjoy the reception. Another man who is in

:40:57. > :41:04.the frame tonight is Chris Froome. For any cyclist I guess it is just

:41:05. > :41:06.the pinnacle of our sport. COMMENTATOR: Chris Froome is

:41:07. > :41:11.Britain's first two-time winner of the Tour de France! I have seen how

:41:12. > :41:20.much work he puts in, how dedicated he is. You have got to put yourself

:41:21. > :41:22.through hell just to be ready for the race itself. After three weeks

:41:23. > :41:25.of racing you are with a group of guys who have been there fighting

:41:26. > :41:31.with you the whole way through. It is pretty emotional. He is just a

:41:32. > :41:35.gentleman, a super nice guy and I could not ride for a better

:41:36. > :41:44.team-mate. It is Chris Froome who is smiling! Chris Froome, I mean, OK,

:41:45. > :41:47.your sport is brutal, Nicola Adams. This guy puts himself through

:41:48. > :41:56.physical pain to win that Tour de France. He had abuse hurled at him,

:41:57. > :42:01.getting spat on and in one case having urine thrown at him. I think

:42:02. > :42:06.what he has done this year is not even of this planet. Definitely not.

:42:07. > :42:09.To go through all that and win is unbelievable. It is an achievement

:42:10. > :42:15.in itself. Nobody really knows how it feels to go through all that and

:42:16. > :42:19.come out the other end and win. He has done unbelievably well. On the

:42:20. > :42:26.boxing front, we just heard from Carl Frampton, and his fight is in

:42:27. > :42:32.February against Scott Quigg. I love Scott as well. What a golden era it

:42:33. > :42:37.is, I have lost count how many champions we have got! Yes, was in

:42:38. > :42:42.doing so well at the moment. It is unbelievable, I am just loving the

:42:43. > :42:46.boxing. It is great. A lot of people in the business who climb between

:42:47. > :42:51.the ropes and throw punches Dave Tyson Fury more of a chance against

:42:52. > :42:55.Klitschko than most of us fans - how did you feel watching it when he

:42:56. > :42:59.took those titles away from a man who had looked unbeatable on his

:43:00. > :43:03.home turf? Aisle ways felt it was going to be a tough challenge. The

:43:04. > :43:10.guy has been champion for 11 years. -- I always felt. You were expecting

:43:11. > :43:14.him to put more of a fight up. I was wondering, was he injured, was there

:43:15. > :43:19.something wrong? But Tyson Fury was better on the night. I do not care

:43:20. > :43:23.what Tyson Fury says, what anybody says, we now have British

:43:24. > :43:27.heavyweight boxing on a global scale. I think that will make them

:43:28. > :43:31.fight each other automatically because of the dollar bills. I think

:43:32. > :43:37.Josh is probably the most popular at the moment? Affinity. He is a really

:43:38. > :43:40.nice guy. I trained alongside him at either way up to the Olympics. I

:43:41. > :43:45.have seen him going from strength to strength. I do not believe we have

:43:46. > :43:51.seen the best of Josh yet. There is a lot more to come from him. He is

:43:52. > :43:57.still developing. You do some training with Jessica Ennis-Hill as

:43:58. > :44:03.well - how does that work? I guess we just train in the same building,

:44:04. > :44:07.so we see each other quite a lot and we get to talk to each other and we

:44:08. > :44:11.try to motivate each other in training and see how we are all

:44:12. > :44:20.ticking along and getting along with our training. People think we are

:44:21. > :44:24.really far away from each other. But Claire is literally 2ft away from me

:44:25. > :44:33.now. The amount of times I have wanted to meet that guy! Yes, but

:44:34. > :44:38.you got Eamonn Holmes! Anyway, the world of sport and music are

:44:39. > :44:42.combined tonight. Great to have you both here tonight. Rory, no pressure

:44:43. > :44:46.on you tonight, no major pressure?! No major pressure on me tonight! I

:44:47. > :44:50.am not up for the award but I am still here to have a good time and

:44:51. > :44:57.show everyone what Belfast has to offer. How proud you that this huge

:44:58. > :45:01.event is here in your city? Yes, it is fantastic. I have been excited

:45:02. > :45:05.about it for a while since I have known that the BBC was going to

:45:06. > :45:10.bring Spoty here. I am just excited and glad to be here. I think you can

:45:11. > :45:15.see by the turnout from everyone how excited everybody is about it. And

:45:16. > :45:19.great to have your mate Niall with you. I know you have had a few

:45:20. > :45:22.rounds together - how has that been for you, Niall?

:45:23. > :45:30.I'm two up. It's great to be here. Glad it is here in Belfast. It is a

:45:31. > :45:34.show I've grown up watching. Great to be here and commemorate a

:45:35. > :45:40.fantastic year in sport. Briefly, how does this compare to all the

:45:41. > :45:44.showbiz and music events you've been to in terms of red carpet events?

:45:45. > :45:52.It's something I've got used to, I guess. It's good to be here. You've

:45:53. > :45:59.got a lot more people to speak to. Good luck tonight. At the moment

:46:00. > :46:06.Tyson Fury has entered the red carpet. He beat Wladimir Klitschko

:46:07. > :46:11.in his own back yard. He had to tear the foam out of the ring, rewrap

:46:12. > :46:15.Klitschko's gloves to get a fair deal. Even after the fight, people

:46:16. > :46:22.including myself, said the judges weren't going to give it to him. But

:46:23. > :46:26.what he's done is he's managed to go over the mainland Europe and wrestle

:46:27. > :46:35.the titles away from Klitschko and get them back in the Arena. There

:46:36. > :46:43.are so many delicious fights now lined up in 2016 and 2017. We talk

:46:44. > :46:48.about Joshua, about Haye coming back, but Fury is the man with the

:46:49. > :46:52.belt. For all sorts of reasons he's been the one talked about. He said

:46:53. > :46:58.he isn't going to do any interviews tonight. He's posed for the press.

:46:59. > :47:06.This is the sporting year of Tyson Fury. On the very first day I laced

:47:07. > :47:11.up a pair of gloves I was going to be the heavyweight champ of the

:47:12. > :47:16.world and it became true. I was supported by my brothers. Everybody

:47:17. > :47:25.believed in me from the first day. My dad used to follow me, used to

:47:26. > :47:30.drive because he hated flying. When he fought Wladimir Klitschko a lot

:47:31. > :47:37.of people didn't think he would achieve what he did. In boxing from

:47:38. > :47:44.14 to 27 so long time. Into he's has brought back a lot of excitement in

:47:45. > :47:51.boxing. No matter how many fights, it is not going to compete with that

:47:52. > :47:56.night. Forget Lucy Bronze and Adam Peaty and Andy Murray, I'm with the

:47:57. > :48:04.funny man, the football man, Eddie Izzard. Tell us what we are up to.

:48:05. > :48:08.Well, I am patron of a sports volunteering charity called Join In.

:48:09. > :48:12.And we work with the BBC Get Inspired. We are going to talk to

:48:13. > :48:16.someone now nominated in Northern Ireland. Didn't end up being the

:48:17. > :48:21.winner but they are all fantastic people. This is Danny Core. He does

:48:22. > :48:28.a lot of great work in Northern Ireland. He's done a fantastic job.

:48:29. > :48:35.Usually when you do this it would be through the old-fashioned phone box.

:48:36. > :48:38.He put in 50p. I looks like a TARDIS, but we've invented Skype,

:48:39. > :48:46.just the two of us here together, so we are now going to talk to Danny on

:48:47. > :48:51.Skype. This is copyrighted to us. We know what you do but tell everybody

:48:52. > :48:56.else who is watching this now, why we are talking to you today? It is a

:48:57. > :49:04.bit of a surprise, this unsung hero thing. But I coach a community gym.

:49:05. > :49:12.We coach kids from five years old to old couragers like me. We do some

:49:13. > :49:17.youth work with young guys who've been involved in drugs and drink and

:49:18. > :49:21.we give them a motivation to train and become coaches themselves. You

:49:22. > :49:27.changed people's perceptions a bit here, Danny, as it is mixed martial

:49:28. > :49:31.arts. It is what we see Conor McGregor doing. The last fight

:49:32. > :49:38.didn't go to plan and it is brutal, but people don't see the other side

:49:39. > :49:44.of it, which is the discipline. Wes, we have a lot of discipline and

:49:45. > :49:47.respect. It is written on the wall and it's the first thing the kids

:49:48. > :49:50.see. It is not all about the competition side. We take them

:49:51. > :49:55.through personal development. Make them better people. Danny, it is

:49:56. > :49:58.brilliant. This is something that's happening in the world, people are

:49:59. > :50:02.seeing that if you can get people who've no mission in life and you

:50:03. > :50:07.are giving them a mission, I've noticed that people if they have no

:50:08. > :50:10.mission, they will get involved in antisocial behaviour or crime and

:50:11. > :50:12.you are giving them a mission and making them feel good about

:50:13. > :50:18.themselves. It is a very positive thing. Thank you so much for talking

:50:19. > :50:23.to us. Hello by the way Mrs Core. How are you? Are you alright? Fine,

:50:24. > :50:31.thanks. Is it four sons? Four sons yes. The handsome one in the black.

:50:32. > :50:37.Hiya. And the Northern Ireland... How are you doing? And the cute one

:50:38. > :50:43.in the red. And the one in the blue is like, oh my God, daddy, I can't

:50:44. > :50:53.believe you put my on TV. Look at him! Hello everybody! This is his

:50:54. > :50:59.identical twin. And there's a fighting family. And you can tell

:51:00. > :51:04.them apart, one is in red and one is in blue? Pretty much yes. Thank you

:51:05. > :51:13.for joining us. Quite a double act. I'm delighted to say on the

:51:14. > :51:19.mezzanine level Dan Carter. World Cup winner, shall I go on? No, stop

:51:20. > :51:22.there, you are embarrassing me. Your first time to Belfast. Wonderful to

:51:23. > :51:28.have you here. And you are picking up an award Unfortunately I'm only

:51:29. > :51:36.here for five or six hours before shooting back to train tomorrow in

:51:37. > :51:39.France. Very honoured to be presented with the Sports

:51:40. > :51:44.Personality of the Year sports person. A special thanks to my

:51:45. > :51:50.team-mates that made it a dream for me. An immense achievement. I know

:51:51. > :51:55.this man beside you is itching to get in. Well, well, well, there

:51:56. > :52:00.should be a restaining order. I reckon. It is all about the team,

:52:01. > :52:04.and I know. That were you that were you were getting better and better

:52:05. > :52:10.individually as it went along? Do you get into the zone as a

:52:11. > :52:16.professional sportsman? The last few weeks I was in the zone and all I

:52:17. > :52:20.wanted to do was try and help my team win each game. Get to the

:52:21. > :52:23.play-off stage, it is do or die and you have to professional well.

:52:24. > :52:29.Reflecting back on it, I realised how much of an impact I made, but at

:52:30. > :52:33.the time you are in the zone and doing whatever it took to help your

:52:34. > :52:37.team get across the line. There's a great respect at that final whist

:52:38. > :52:42.until rugby union but how nice was it to go, we've won the World Cup

:52:43. > :52:47.outside of our country? We've went to the northern hemisphere and

:52:48. > :52:51.triumphed? It was huge. It was a big motivating factor for us. Going into

:52:52. > :52:55.the World Cup, the first one was winning back to back World Cups,

:52:56. > :52:59.which no team has done before. The second was to be the first All

:53:00. > :53:06.Blacks side to win a World Cup outside New Zealand. We had won two

:53:07. > :53:10.prior to that but both in New Zealand. It was an extremely

:53:11. > :53:14.challenging situation where the competition was so tough. To be able

:53:15. > :53:19.to do that was really pleasing. Of course this isn't just about Clare's

:53:20. > :53:24.sporting achievement. Look at me being an old bore asking about

:53:25. > :53:30.sport. What's the question I have to ask? Who are you wearing? I have no

:53:31. > :53:34.idea. No, it's a New Zealand company, so I'm supporting my roots,

:53:35. > :53:38.and I can we designers in New Zealand. Still Lizzie Armitstead,

:53:39. > :53:42.definitely. Dan thank you so much. Enjoy tonight. I hope you come back

:53:43. > :53:46.to Belfast soon. Thank you. It is not all about the people who win

:53:47. > :53:50.gold on the track or in the pool or whatever. It is about the unsung

:53:51. > :53:56.heroes as well tonight. Nicola has been speaking to some of them. How

:53:57. > :54:01.does it feel to be here today with the unsung heroes? I feel like you

:54:02. > :54:05.should be interviewing these brilliant people other than me. The

:54:06. > :54:09.Unsung Hero Award is such a fantastic award. These brilliant,

:54:10. > :54:11.lovely people give up so much of their time and energy to volunteer

:54:12. > :54:15.in grass roots sport. They are fantastic. One of these lovely

:54:16. > :54:20.people will be going up on stage this evening to get the overall

:54:21. > :54:24.award. For me it is really nice to be here with all the unsung heroes

:54:25. > :54:28.and it is really nice to they are appreciating for all the hard work

:54:29. > :54:33.we do as well. The most important thing for us is to make sure we say

:54:34. > :54:35.thank you to these brilliant people without whom grass roots sport

:54:36. > :54:40.wouldn't happen. The majority of sport is run by people who don't get

:54:41. > :54:44.paid. They quite often are giving up so much of their time, they are

:54:45. > :54:47.driving people around, washing clothes. Going out of their way to

:54:48. > :54:54.do things so that people can participate in sport. For each one

:54:55. > :54:57.person who volunteers in sport it helps 8.5 people participate. It is

:54:58. > :55:01.really important that we support them and take the time to say thank

:55:02. > :55:11.you for what they do. Excellent. Thank you. I think we have spoken to

:55:12. > :55:16.just about everybody in the top 12 tonight, but one man remains, Max

:55:17. > :55:21.Whitlock. World champion gymnast on the pommel horse. I know you've been

:55:22. > :55:25.in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the last couple of weeks, spreading the

:55:26. > :55:31.good news about gymnastics? Pretty much. I came out for a couple of

:55:32. > :55:37.days. It was about visiting as many schools and gym clubs as I could to

:55:38. > :55:43.make people more involved in gymnastics. I had a great reception.

:55:44. > :55:51.I believe you discovered a couple of stars, one in particular called

:55:52. > :55:55.Emily, who is only nine and beat you in a handstand competition? It was a

:55:56. > :56:00.lot of fun. I did a lot of competitions and tried to get the

:56:01. > :56:03.kids involved. The target was to inspire more to join. It was a

:56:04. > :56:11.success. So you've seen a lot of talent here would you say? 100%, it

:56:12. > :56:16.is great to see. It is nice to go to places where they didn't know me. I

:56:17. > :56:21.got an amazing reception. At one school the teacher asked, who is

:56:22. > :56:29.going to join gymnastics and a lot of hand went up. Did you want to say

:56:30. > :56:36.I'm the diva here, I'm the Mariah carry of this show, I'm coming last?

:56:37. > :56:45.No, it's been a busy day. Best of luck. You've been a history maker.

:56:46. > :56:50.Thank you. Good luck. They said there'll be pandemonium on the red

:56:51. > :56:54.carpet. I was in my element. A kid in a sweet shop I would describe

:56:55. > :56:57.you. Fantastic to see so many names in Belfast from the world of sport

:56:58. > :57:02.and entertainment. It is building towards a fantastic evening in the

:57:03. > :57:05.SSA Arena just up the road. It was good. It is interesting to look

:57:06. > :57:11.through all the different stories. It is hard to choose. I know that's

:57:12. > :57:14.a cliche, but I come back to what I said earlier. There is no big

:57:15. > :57:18.football tournament and I think that helps Sports Personality of the

:57:19. > :57:21.Year, because we should be concentrating on world champions

:57:22. > :57:28.like Adam Peaty, Lizzie Armitstead, Max Whitlock. It's good to see

:57:29. > :57:33.athletics coming to the fore, with three contenders, Adam Peaty, and

:57:34. > :57:38.Max Whitlock. Who was your favourite on the red carpet? You couldn't.

:57:39. > :57:43.They were all my favourite. It is Lizzie Armitstead, we know that. You

:57:44. > :57:50.should have seen his face when she came on the red carpet tonight. BBC

:57:51. > :57:53.Sports Personality of the Year from Belfast. Thank you for watching our

:57:54. > :57:59.red carpet coverage. Goodnight.
