0:00:15 > 0:00:19It's the start of another road racing season here on the BBC

0:00:19 > 0:00:23and just like this lot, get ready to sit on the edge of your seats.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31COMMENTATOR: What's going on?

0:00:31 > 0:00:33Whoa!

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Here they are side-by-side.

0:00:43 > 0:00:44Oh!

0:00:46 > 0:00:49We could be looking at the most successful Dunlop ever around Cookstown.

0:00:51 > 0:00:55The countdown is very much on to the first international

0:00:55 > 0:00:57event of the year, the North West 200,

0:00:57 > 0:01:01but as always the biking year starts here at the Cookstown 100.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05It's Ireland's oldest road race, first run back in 1922,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08and always provides a spectacular start to the season.

0:01:11 > 0:01:16The circuit is short and snappy, but with plenty of twists and turns.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19The long start-finish straight allows for plenty of thrilling

0:01:19 > 0:01:22racing as the bikes brake for the first right-hand corner.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26It's a tight track between the hedges,

0:01:26 > 0:01:30past farms and through the countryside.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33There is a famous fast jump.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Just over two miles long, spectators are guaranteed to see

0:01:36 > 0:01:38plenty of the action.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48The fastest man ever around this circuit is home-grown.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52Michael Dunlop broke the Superbike record last year.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55He is also the quickest man in the Supersport class.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59Along with his brother William he's headlining a field of top

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Irish racing talent.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11This is the first time on it. I haven't ridden any of these yet.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13It's come very quickly, thick and heavy.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16We weren't thinking it was that much, next thing it's all over the place.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18We'll get there. We are all right.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20We need to keep plugging away and we'll be 100 per cent.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22You just have to keep on top of things.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27Everybody has their own job and if I keep on top of them, they do their job and everything is done right.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29'It's just easier to keep on top of things once

0:02:29 > 0:02:32'I know what the problems are and if something is wrong, it's my fault'

0:02:32 > 0:02:36because I've prepared them, or we know who has prepared them all, so there's no hassle then.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40'There's only one backdrop. But these boys here know what they are doing. They are smart enough.'

0:02:42 > 0:02:48That is not good, but it is what it is and I think we've got it welded

0:02:48 > 0:02:52and put back in again and we're going the right direction.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55We just need to take it easy on it for a day or two,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58I don't want to do any damage. North West is the big one for me. So we'll just keep plugging away.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03'This is the first time with Suzuki so it's going to be a bit'

0:03:03 > 0:03:05of a learning for us, but

0:03:05 > 0:03:07working with these guys now I'm really comfortable

0:03:07 > 0:03:08in letting them do their thing.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11They've got a lot of experience. As I say, I'm treated well.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15'It's been good being with a lot of Irish lads and also you get to work

0:03:15 > 0:03:18'with Hector and all the boys now, so it's all good at the minute.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21When the results maybe don't come, or something, then maybe

0:03:21 > 0:03:24it could be hard enough work, but at the minute, really comfortable.

0:03:24 > 0:03:29A lot of effort has been put into me this year, so I'm looking forward to it now.

0:03:29 > 0:03:35This year I've never been better prepared physically and mentally, so it's going to be fun to see

0:03:35 > 0:03:39how they go on the roads, but with all the experience these boys have, there's going

0:03:39 > 0:03:42to be very little for me to complain about. So it should be a good year.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52I would say I'm a bit out of my comfort zone.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54I've been that used to doing the same thing

0:03:54 > 0:03:58for a couple of years with Ryan and now I've completely stepped away.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02I'm going a completely different way with different bikes that I've never rode before.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05And all just trying to get into the way of things again with

0:04:05 > 0:04:08the new bikes and the new team and trying to work out what

0:04:08 > 0:04:12way Wilson Craig does things, what way he likes it, and trying to adapt.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16I planned on riding the Superstock bike here at Cookston,

0:04:16 > 0:04:18but it wasn't going to be ready on time

0:04:18 > 0:04:22and to be honest I'm not complaining at all because I absolutely love

0:04:22 > 0:04:26riding that Superbike. Hopefully I can keep it going throughout

0:04:26 > 0:04:29the year, especially by the time I get to the big international meetings.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31I definitely think the bike is competitive.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34I believe now I can start to be competitive myself.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39The 600 we've still to do a bit of work to.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41The Superbike is just completely mind-blowing.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44It's probably the fastest motorbike I've ever rode,

0:04:44 > 0:04:47probably the best motorbike I've ever rode.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50It handles so well right from the word go.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Cameron had rode this bike last year and it was set up for him,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56and so I got on it, I didn't have to touch the suspension at all hardly.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59A wee tweak here, a wee tweak there.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03This morning has been good. The big bike has been good.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05We only got one run on it this year, down at Mondello

0:05:05 > 0:05:07for the first round of the Masters

0:05:07 > 0:05:10and we came here and big man Mark Kelly put a couple

0:05:10 > 0:05:13of settings into the bike for the suspension and it seems to be good.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16It's really good out there this morning.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18I always love riding the 600,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20but now I've come to grips with the big bike now.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22I'm starting to really like riding the big bike now.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25To be honest, I love riding them all, whatever.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Manx Grand Prix winner Michael Sweeney is sandwiched

0:05:31 > 0:05:33in between two other riders from the Republic of Ireland

0:05:33 > 0:05:38on the front row for this, the first race of the day, the Open class -

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Derek Shiels, a double Superbike champion from last year,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44and the pole setter, Derek McGee.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46The Dunlops are right behind.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48On commentary is Richard Nichols.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56And on the grid, a front row that's all Kawasaki.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58McGee, Sweeney, Shiels away.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Great start from Derek Shiels.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04Looking back, that's the gap he's just pulled on the rest of them.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Derek McGee, the man behind him.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09Michael Sweeney mobbed by row three there.

0:06:11 > 0:06:16On board with Jamie Hamilton and being mugged by Michael Sweeney now,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19as Sweeney tries to get back on the pace.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26Heading towards McAdoo Bends.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30It's Shiels. It's McGee, Dunlop, Sweeney and Jamie Hamilton.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Michael Dunlop having a look there.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36On board the race leader. This is Derek Shiels. It's a short lap.

0:06:36 > 0:06:392.1 miles, 1.24 the fast time for a big bike,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42although the lap record is 1.22.

0:06:42 > 0:06:47That was Michael Dunlop last year, as we head towards Mackney Corner.

0:06:47 > 0:06:48Derek Shiels, Derek McGee.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Jamie Hamilton at the back of that field there.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55We're looking back from William Dunlop at the red plate.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01That is Michael Sweeney. Behind him, Hamilton and Dunlop. Over the jumps.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08We're on board with Dan Kneen.

0:07:08 > 0:07:12The experienced Manxman had to do the newcomer lap yesterday.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Qualified in the middle of the second wave,

0:07:14 > 0:07:16right behind Davy Morgan, where he started.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19This is Derek McGee, who started on pole position

0:07:19 > 0:07:23and is still P2 after a blinding start by Derek Shiels.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25And they're fast out of Braeside,

0:07:25 > 0:07:29away down the hill with the front wheel a foot or more off the ground.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32On board with William Dunlop looking back.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Wait for the... Oh, he's going round the outside of McGee now.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41On the brakes. Will it happen for him? Oh, both getting a bit square.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45Oh, William Dunlop had to think twice about that. He's had to back off.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48He may have lost the drive and he may get snapped up.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Does the man behind him think this is an opportunity? I think he does.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54He got a better drive out of the corner but he can't quite catch

0:07:54 > 0:07:58William Dunlop. So it's still the same order.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00First, second and third.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05It's McGee, it's Dunlop, and this is Dan Kneen looking ahead.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19Fairly settled now, Jamie Hamilton on his new...

0:08:20 > 0:08:23..Honda, his Wilson Craig machine. We're riding...

0:08:25 > 0:08:27..now on board.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37And Michael Dunlop higher than everybody else

0:08:37 > 0:08:40as he tries to challenge Sweeney, who's dropped back.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41Look at his shoulder -

0:08:41 > 0:08:44compressed when he lands on the left-hand side there.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46That's pain you're seeing there from Michael Dunlop.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49This is the race leader, second place, third place,

0:08:49 > 0:08:52it's Jamie Hamilton in fourth place.

0:08:52 > 0:08:53This is a good outing for him.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55New bike, new team.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56That's the same for a lot of people,

0:08:56 > 0:08:59including William Dunlop ahead of him in third place.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03Michael Sweeney now being hounded by Michael Dunlop as Derek Shiels

0:09:03 > 0:09:06brings it into that right-hander.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Looking back at McGee in second place.

0:09:12 > 0:09:16This is all off the back of a brilliant start from Derek Shiels.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18He really got off the line well.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22And now, leading the field, Derek McGee stays with him, but he can't

0:09:22 > 0:09:26make up the ground, he can't bring himself close enough to challenge.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Track drying out now. It was a little bit damp earlier on.

0:09:34 > 0:09:35You can still see patches round the side.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38It was actually raining when we came to the circuit this morning,

0:09:38 > 0:09:42but it's brightened up no end and now a bit of Northern Ireland sunshine

0:09:42 > 0:09:44as they go right out towards the banks and right in again

0:09:44 > 0:09:49against the hedges, shoulder in the hedges on some of those corners,

0:09:49 > 0:09:50you'll notice.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53That's the jump at full speed.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Little bit of a wobble for everyone as they land.

0:09:55 > 0:09:56That was William Dunlop's view.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58If he could turn round now,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01he'd see he's got a good, comfortable third place going on here.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04Not a bad outing for his first ride

0:10:04 > 0:10:08for Hector and Philip Neill with the Tyco Suzuki.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Can he get his head down and reel in Derek McGee?

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Was it all about the start here? That's Michael Dunlop into pit lane.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19That's Michael Dunlop pulling off into pit lane

0:10:19 > 0:10:20and we don't have to ask ourselves why.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Shiels getting a little bit squirrely underbraking.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28Michael Dunlop finding the big bike quite a handful.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31He's a suspected fractured arm.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34The way he was holding it in the paddock

0:10:34 > 0:10:36and having to be helped into his race leathers

0:10:36 > 0:10:40and gloves says that suspected fracture will be confirmed

0:10:40 > 0:10:43when he gets it checked in X-ray.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45Front wheel a little high for Derek Shiels.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49Nice, clean leap for the man behind him, Derek McGee.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52Just slightly out of the seat there.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56They are almost side by side. Now, has Derek McGee brought it home?

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Has Derek McGee got this one sorted?

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Into this final lap now with this front pair together.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13On board, looking back. It's closer than it appears to be on the camera.

0:11:13 > 0:11:14Same like rear view mirrors.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Don't turn round, he's right behind you.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18They've broken away from William Dunlop,

0:11:18 > 0:11:22who seems to have decided third place is what he's going to do today

0:11:22 > 0:11:26and not a bad decision either, not a bad result either.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Look at these two now, getting into the scrap. Half a lap to go.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Way up towards the top of the circuit, through Black's Farm.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40It is a bit of a climb.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46Over the jump, still going uphill. First, second and third in view.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Through the farm.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53Very tight and narrow through there, very close to the spectators.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00Final corridor's coming up, Orritor Crossroads,

0:12:00 > 0:12:01and it's almost decided now.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05There's not enough time or space through the Ss. Out of Braeside.

0:12:05 > 0:12:06It's going to be Derek Shiels

0:12:06 > 0:12:09who wins the opening road race of the season.

0:12:09 > 0:12:13Derek McGee in second, William Dunlop in third place.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15And the headline news has to be

0:12:15 > 0:12:18retirement through injury for Michael Dunlop.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24Super race to start the season.

0:12:24 > 0:12:27I just kept my head and keep my braking right and everything else.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28It worked out for us.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33- Great ride.- Yeah, great to get off that start now.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35Better than last year,

0:12:35 > 0:12:37so hopefully can do the same now in the next race.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45The 125 Class has finally faded from the World Championship scene,

0:12:45 > 0:12:47but there's still huge affection in road racing

0:12:47 > 0:12:49for these gutsy little two-strokes.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52So much so, that's almost all there are on this grid.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56William Cowden led away from pole after a restart for a red flag.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Sam Dunlop second, Justin Waring following in grid order,

0:12:59 > 0:13:01making all the noise on a 250 Honda.

0:13:05 > 0:13:12And now it's first and second and you can see the power of that 250 -

0:13:12 > 0:13:14got past Dunlop, closed with Cowden.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16Those two broke away together,

0:13:16 > 0:13:18looked as if the extra capacity of the Moto3 bike

0:13:18 > 0:13:21is going to win the day, but Cowden having none of that.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Heading towards the flag now

0:13:25 > 0:13:27and arriving at the finish line

0:13:27 > 0:13:32with the smallest winning margin of the day - two tenths of a second

0:13:32 > 0:13:34separated him from second place at the flag,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37with Nigel Moore third and Sam Dunlop fourth.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49Difficult race with that stop-start.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51It's hard to get back in to it and with being cut to three laps,

0:13:51 > 0:13:53you're only getting gelled and it's over,

0:13:53 > 0:13:55so it would have been nice to see seven,

0:13:55 > 0:13:57but I'm glad I'm finishing three!

0:14:14 > 0:14:16Next up, it's the Supersport race,

0:14:16 > 0:14:20and the three riders who were all on the podium in the Superbike class

0:14:20 > 0:14:22are all on the front row for this one.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24As for Michael Dunlop,

0:14:24 > 0:14:27well, he's really struggling with that arm injury sustained

0:14:27 > 0:14:29after that crash at Brands Hatch.

0:14:29 > 0:14:34Just look at the pain he's going through to put his racing glove on.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37He's unlikely to be competitive, but you never know.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40Struggling to get his leathers on as well.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43He's not fit, he's in pain, but he's going to race,

0:14:43 > 0:14:45starting on the outside of row two

0:14:45 > 0:14:49with McGee, Shiels and brother William dead ahead of him.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54That's the line up, there's the light and there's the start

0:14:54 > 0:14:58and it was McGee who got the drop on Derek Shiels this time.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01And Derek McGee goes hammering down the hill

0:15:01 > 0:15:03towards the right turn.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06Watch him go for the brakes as they go over the stripes.

0:15:06 > 0:15:09All sitting up now and the front diving down

0:15:09 > 0:15:12as they go through the gearbox and we dive down the inside.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14That was good work but it didn't happen, did it?

0:15:14 > 0:15:18Michael Sweeney nearly got through there as the second wave goes away

0:15:18 > 0:15:21with Jamie Hamilton, Seamus Elliott and Davy Morgan.

0:15:21 > 0:15:23This is the first wave. McGee leads Shiels,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26William Dunlop, Sam Wilson, Michael Sweeney, Michael Pearson

0:15:26 > 0:15:29and a very sore Michael Dunlop at the back of that group.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32We're on board with Michael Sweeney looking at Sam Wilson.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Through the farm, onto Craigmount.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36Heading towards the crossroads at the end of lap one.

0:15:36 > 0:15:40Michael Dunlop's starting to look very aggressive behind number 36,

0:15:40 > 0:15:43Pearson, at the back of the group.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47McGee leads Shiels and William Dunlop, Pearson, Sweeney.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49Sam Wilson, Michael Dunlop.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51We're on board with Sweeney, heading down the hill.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58McGee, Shiels, William, Pearson, Sweeney, Wilson, Dunlop.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02Line astern, round turn one with Derek Shiels.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06William Dunlop passing for second place there, was he?

0:16:06 > 0:16:08I think that was William Dunlop going through.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12On board with Michael Sweeney.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16The battle between Dunlop and Wilson is close behind him.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26Well, Sweeney-eye view of the race now.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32And is McGee going to lose another place

0:16:32 > 0:16:33to Pearson here?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Derek McGee now in danger of being snapped up

0:16:37 > 0:16:39by Michael Pearson.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Here's the Sweeney view of the situation.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43He was right in the hedge then, wasn't he?

0:16:44 > 0:16:48William Dunlop taking it right to the extremes of the circuit

0:16:48 > 0:16:50in his pursuit of the man ahead.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53600 racing is always close, always spectacular

0:16:53 > 0:16:56and this is shaping up to give us more of the same.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00Closing up on the brakes and...

0:17:00 > 0:17:02Oh, and being passed. Did you see that?

0:17:02 > 0:17:06Michael Dunlop just going sweeping through there.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Just snatched the place.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13So here comes the battle...

0:17:13 > 0:17:15We've got two going on as they come down the hill

0:17:15 > 0:17:19and looking down there, that was number 36, Michael Pearson.

0:17:19 > 0:17:20Was that his chain going across the track?

0:17:20 > 0:17:24I think it might have been as the leaders come towards turn one.

0:17:24 > 0:17:26They're all over the place on the brakes.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28This time, is it going to happen for William Dunlop?

0:17:28 > 0:17:31He's gone wide, he can't get the power on.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33He still can't get past. He looks round.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35He knows he's going to be snapped up.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40Michael Dunlop did well in that little run from Braeside,

0:17:40 > 0:17:42down the hill towards Gortin,

0:17:42 > 0:17:44but here is the leading trio

0:17:44 > 0:17:49and now McGee under loads of pressure from William Dunlop.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Michael Sweeney giving us a look up the circuit.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57The camera makes it all seem far away, but it's really much closer.

0:17:57 > 0:18:01Have a look at this for second and third through the corner.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04Who's fourth? It's Michael Dunlop, closing in on his brother,

0:18:04 > 0:18:07who's already looking ahead, thinking about the man in front of him.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10Does he know Michael is coming? I doubt it.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Derek Shiels has got a clear track in front of him,

0:18:13 > 0:18:16but he's got all kinds of mayhem going on behind him

0:18:16 > 0:18:17and it's coming his way.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22Here are the 600s over the jumps.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Race leader gets it down cleanly.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28Derek McGee had a little bit of a wobble there.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30But he's still trying.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32We're on board with Derek Shiels as McGee goes steaming past,

0:18:32 > 0:18:36very late on the brakes as they go over the second set of stripes.

0:18:36 > 0:18:37100m, turn it in.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40And he's got it down, hasn't he? Just missed the kerb with his knee.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42Very neatly done by Derek McGee to take the lead.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44What's happening behind?

0:18:44 > 0:18:46William Dunlop's being challenged by his brother,

0:18:46 > 0:18:47but he doesn't know that yet.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50He'll find out in a minute. Dunlop on a charge.

0:18:50 > 0:18:54It's a pair of Dunlops on the 600s

0:18:54 > 0:18:56and how often do you get to say that?

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Derek Shiels now down to second place,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03looking at the back end Derek McGee

0:19:03 > 0:19:07and Michael Dunlop, finding the... He's shaking his head there.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11Finding the smaller 600 a little bit more to his liking.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15The big bike a bit of a handful, but it seems as if he can manage

0:19:15 > 0:19:20the 600 much more easily with that injury to his left arm.

0:19:20 > 0:19:23Derek McGee right up in the air. Shiels high up behind him.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27Here come the Dunlops, side by side, almost.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30Michael Dunlop catching his brother in mid-air.

0:19:32 > 0:19:36Not hurting so much, obviously, as he has another stab at his brother.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39Shiels is looking at McGee. Michael's through on William.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41Got track position. Just got through there.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44That was a lovely, aggressive pass

0:19:44 > 0:19:48from Michael Dunlop. That is perfect.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50That is the way to do it and look, he's already made up ground,

0:19:50 > 0:19:51he's already pulled away,

0:19:51 > 0:19:55and he's already thinking about getting passed Derek Shiels.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57This is a man with a broken arm, remember!

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Ah, yes, just a little bit of a flick there, a little bit of a flex.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03He can feel it still.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Took his arm off the bars and just gave it a little rest.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09McGee, Shiels, Dunlop and Dunlop.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12Michael Dunlop sizing up the man in front.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16Derek Shiels is about to find out how quick Michael Dunlop can be

0:20:16 > 0:20:19with one good arm and one broken arm.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25He's right behind in the slipstream as they go over the jumps.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Derek Shiels will know he's there.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32He'll feel the tug now on the long straights.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34He'll feel the little drag on his bike

0:20:34 > 0:20:36that says there's another one close behind him.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38What he won't know - who it is.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40He hasn't turned round yet, he's not turning round.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42He's cleverer than that.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46This is the last thing you want to do now, is look and see who it is.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49It doesn't make any difference when they're that close.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52Michael Dunlop getting the power on really hard and early there.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Here he comes, right down the hill.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57McGee, Dunlop going wide.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59Dunlop right on the outside.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02Is he going to get through? He's got space.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04He's got position. Can he get it...

0:21:04 > 0:21:05They clash!

0:21:05 > 0:21:09Oh, he touched with McGee and they both survive. Dunlop goes through.

0:21:09 > 0:21:13Here it is from outside. McGee, the back wheel all over the place.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15Dunlop almost in the same boat.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17Bit of 600 racing incident there

0:21:17 > 0:21:20that neither of them will probably agree on,

0:21:20 > 0:21:24but it was fun for us and it was fun for the spectators

0:21:24 > 0:21:27and think about this - Michael Dunlop is now...

0:21:29 > 0:21:33..absolutely making history. There's nothing else you can say about this.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37Here's a man with a broken arm going through the Ss for the final time,

0:21:37 > 0:21:39round the corner, past Braeside,

0:21:39 > 0:21:45front wheel up in the air, wins the Supersport 600 here at Cookstown.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47How did he do that?

0:21:47 > 0:21:52Michael Dunlop is the race winner in the Supersport.

0:21:52 > 0:21:53He just couldn't stop being Michael Dunlop

0:21:53 > 0:21:56and he forced his way to the front in one of those displays

0:21:56 > 0:21:59of controlled aggression people will remember for ever.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02Another chapter in a growing legend.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Michael, did you honestly think that you could be that competitive

0:22:07 > 0:22:09- with the injury?- Definitely not.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13Not after going into it. I was away back in ninth.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15I could hold on to it and I was like,

0:22:15 > 0:22:19"We need to get a grip of ourselves here", so just gritted my teeth.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22The boys, you're braking that late and going in tight.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23You can't pass and I just,

0:22:23 > 0:22:26"Here, screw this - I'm going round the outside."

0:22:26 > 0:22:29I think somebody touched me and I just rode on anyway.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32Just kept my head down and battered on. I just got caught.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36It's hard passing round here, it's tight, but we got there.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38I didn't think we'd hold on for long enough

0:22:38 > 0:22:39but we've held on till now,

0:22:39 > 0:22:41so hopefully I haven't done too much damage!

0:22:41 > 0:22:44- What was that like to be part of? - It was a great old race.

0:22:44 > 0:22:45It's tight out there.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48I made a mistake in the second lap, overshot here at the straight

0:22:48 > 0:22:51and went back to third but managed to get by the boys.

0:23:04 > 0:23:09Top British Superbike rider Josh Brookes made his road racing debut

0:23:09 > 0:23:11at the North West 200 last season.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13He's here at Cookstown this year,

0:23:13 > 0:23:16though only to do a parade lap or two,

0:23:16 > 0:23:20but he can't wait to get back to the north coast and race competitively.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Josh, how were your first laps of the Cookstown 100?

0:23:26 > 0:23:31Yeah, I only lived not far away from here a year or two ago,

0:23:31 > 0:23:34but I'd never actually done a full lap of the circuit.

0:23:34 > 0:23:35I'd done a lap or two waving at the crowd.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38I actually just wanted to keep both hands on the handlebars

0:23:38 > 0:23:40and get going.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43I went over a few jumps there and I think I might even have got

0:23:43 > 0:23:46a little bit of air, so that's my comfort zone.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49How much are you looking forward to the North West 200 this year,

0:23:49 > 0:23:51hopefully with a bit of good weather?

0:23:51 > 0:23:54I think I'm definitely in a shout for a podium.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57I think I'd be hard-pressed to get a win,

0:23:57 > 0:24:01but it definitely won't be through a lack of trying,

0:24:01 > 0:24:04but with the likes of Alastair Seeley

0:24:04 > 0:24:07and Stuart Easton coming back,

0:24:07 > 0:24:11the list goes on of names you're expecting to be at the front

0:24:11 > 0:24:15and hopefully I can run with them and squeeze in a podium.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17It would be really nice for me.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24Well, I for one wouldn't rule Josh Brookes out

0:24:24 > 0:24:27of a first North West 200 win on just his second visit

0:24:27 > 0:24:30and it's great to see him here at the Cookstown 100,

0:24:30 > 0:24:33where the next race is for the Supertwins

0:24:33 > 0:24:35and Michael Dunlop is in pole position,

0:24:35 > 0:24:37looking for his second win.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44Well, this was Ryan Farquhar's response to the demise

0:24:44 > 0:24:46of the two-strokes and what a success it's been.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Big leap off the line for James Cowton, 52.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50Great start for Michael Dunlop.

0:24:50 > 0:24:51We're on board with Jamie Hamilton,

0:24:51 > 0:24:54getting properly mugged on the run to Gortin.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58And a great start for Connor Behan, number 72, off the second row.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00Outbrakes Dunlop. Does he?

0:25:00 > 0:25:01He's heading that way round the outside.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04That takes some doing, even when Michael's having a bad day.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Is he going to do it? Yes, he is. Back wheel's lifting.

0:25:07 > 0:25:09But it is Connor Behan out in front.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Dunlop coming straight back at him. Here's the second wave.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15Leading, Dan Kneen in the middle. Davy Morgan, Ben Rea.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17It's Kneen who flies off the line

0:25:17 > 0:25:19while the others all fly the front wheel.

0:25:19 > 0:25:23Dunlop leads Behan at McAdoo with Hamilton in third place.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25James Cowton is fourth.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28We're on board, Hamilton catching Behan.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30Is he going to pass? He's alongside.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34Front wheel's high over the jumps. Doesn't quite get alongside.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36It's as close and exciting as 600,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39it's as close and exciting as 125 used to be.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43All it doesn't do is stop suddenly for no apparent reason.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Apart from being a two-stroke, which is what...

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Oh, look at Connor Behan!

0:25:47 > 0:25:50That was sideways there.

0:25:50 > 0:25:53That's why Supertwins are so much fun.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55That back wheel was right out of line there

0:25:55 > 0:25:57and he was still on the throttle.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Hamilton still trying to get past.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10Oh, up the inside. Did you see that?

0:26:12 > 0:26:14Just when he was thinking,

0:26:14 > 0:26:17"It's Jamie Hamilton I need to worry about",

0:26:17 > 0:26:18he got stuffed up the inside.

0:26:19 > 0:26:25But Behan, Cowton and Hamilton - this trio...

0:26:31 > 0:26:33And somewhere out in front,

0:26:33 > 0:26:36not in that shot, in a class of his own, is Michael Dunlop.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38He's not appearing on the ground cameras,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41he's not appearing in the camera shots. Here he is.

0:26:41 > 0:26:42Look, there's nothing behind him.

0:26:42 > 0:26:46Michael Dunlop has gone missing from the pack cos he is so far...

0:26:46 > 0:26:48While they're scrapping among themselves,

0:26:48 > 0:26:50he's just disappeared up the road.

0:26:50 > 0:26:51But he's just won a 600 race.

0:26:51 > 0:26:56Can he do it again on the Supertwins? It certainly looks as if he can.

0:26:56 > 0:26:57There's no-one around him,

0:26:57 > 0:27:00no sign of a challenge, and until this lot sort themselves out

0:27:00 > 0:27:05and get their heads down, he's going to continue drawing away from them,

0:27:05 > 0:27:08cos they're losing time, protecting their positions,

0:27:08 > 0:27:09scrapping over the corners.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12As we follow Jamie Hamilton's ride up the hill,

0:27:12 > 0:27:14Michael Dunlop's already round the corner.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16Here he is, at Orritor Crossroads, turning right,

0:27:16 > 0:27:19heading towards the Ss.

0:27:19 > 0:27:21Left he goes through here.

0:27:21 > 0:27:24A little bit of a flick-flack and down to Braeside.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26Here is second place behind him.

0:27:29 > 0:27:31James Cowton.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34As we go on board with Hamilton, closing...on Connor Behan.

0:27:34 > 0:27:39There's Cowton out in front of us in second place. No sign...

0:27:39 > 0:27:42You cannot see Michael Dunlop on the front straight now.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44Ooh, you could see that.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46Connor Behan's a specialist at this, isn't he?

0:27:46 > 0:27:48Lost a bit of time going through there

0:27:48 > 0:27:50and that's all that Jamie Hamilton...

0:27:50 > 0:27:52Was that a knee there? Yes, and an elbow.

0:27:52 > 0:27:57It is just like 125 racing, it is just like 600 Supersport.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59Supertwins is just brilliant fun.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04I wonder if they're smiling inside their crash helmets

0:28:04 > 0:28:08while they're digging each other in the ribs, going through the corners.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10So second place for James Cowton at the moment.

0:28:10 > 0:28:15First place, somewhere up ahead of us, is race leader Michael Dunlop.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17Straining for a glimpse of him but there isn't one.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21Hamilton's third. Connor Behan is now in fourth place.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26That was Andy Farrell, I think, the black machine behind.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28Number 96 in fifth place.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31Just a glimpse of his front wheel at the end of that shot

0:28:31 > 0:28:32as we go up the hill.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35This is Cowton and that was Dunlop on the long straight.

0:28:35 > 0:28:39Here he is, clearing the Drum, front wheel high.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49You can see that he has either backed off

0:28:49 > 0:28:52or he has been reeled in by James Cowton.

0:28:52 > 0:28:56I'm suspecting that he's just slackened the pace a little bit.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58No need to give it full beans,

0:28:58 > 0:29:01especially when he's nursing an injured arm.

0:29:01 > 0:29:06So Michael Dunlop, I think, thinks he is in control of this situation

0:29:06 > 0:29:09as much as he wants to be.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12Catching up with the last of the third row as he gets ready

0:29:12 > 0:29:15for his second chequered flag of the day and there it is.

0:29:15 > 0:29:19An amazing, outstanding second win for him

0:29:19 > 0:29:24ahead of a huge scrap for the other two podium places.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27Michael, you're obviously hurting

0:29:27 > 0:29:30after what I'm sure was a very satisfying win number two.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32Yeah, you know...

0:29:32 > 0:29:34the steering handle broke off,

0:29:34 > 0:29:37so it just made it hard work with my shoulder and just...

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Fair play to the boys, my bike's good.

0:29:39 > 0:29:43The boys were working hard and built a good wee bike,

0:29:43 > 0:29:45so hopefully if we can do a lot of changes now for the North West,

0:29:45 > 0:29:47we can be competitive.

0:29:50 > 0:29:54Time now for the feature race of the day, the Cookstown 100,

0:29:54 > 0:29:58dominated in recent times by Ryan Farquhar.

0:29:58 > 0:29:59He's not racing here this year

0:29:59 > 0:30:02but won it seven times in the last decades.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06So will we see a new name on the illustrious roll of honour?

0:30:06 > 0:30:08Or can Michael Dunlop win, as he did last year?

0:30:10 > 0:30:11That's a big ask, Stephen,

0:30:11 > 0:30:14because the little 600 and super twin machines just don't make

0:30:14 > 0:30:17the same physical demands that you get from a superbike,

0:30:17 > 0:30:21especially over eight laps and there are plenty of candidates for a win.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24Jamie Hamilton for one. It's a very familiar front row.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27McGee, Sweeney and Sheils, William, Michael

0:30:27 > 0:30:30and Jamie Hamilton on the road behind and they are away.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33Will it be Sheils? No, it was Sweeney who got away best.

0:30:33 > 0:30:35This is the view back from Derek Sheils,

0:30:35 > 0:30:38looking at the number six Tyco Suzuki of William Dunlop.

0:30:38 > 0:30:42But here's the man he can see, leading the race down the hill.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45Derek McGee, here comes the second wave, that's Davy Morgan.

0:30:45 > 0:30:50As we go back to turn one, on board with Jamie Hamilton.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52You recognise that, don't you?

0:30:52 > 0:30:55That was Michael Dunlop, bustling his way past.

0:30:59 > 0:31:03And in fact he was in a bit of a Dunlop sandwich for a moment there.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08I wonder how long that is going to last.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11It's McGee, Dunlop, Sheils, Dunlop.

0:31:11 > 0:31:15Jamie Hamilton, oh! He's down! He's lost it. It's all over the place.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18Jamie Hamilton, I think he just gassed it up a little bit too

0:31:18 > 0:31:23keenly and he went down slow and easy. I'm sure he'll be fine.

0:31:23 > 0:31:25Have a look again.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28It's the front wheel that folds. Tries to pick it up

0:31:28 > 0:31:33and there's no saving that one. He'll walk away from that though.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36He's fine, the bike is fine, the camera is fine

0:31:36 > 0:31:38but the race is over for Jamie Hamilton

0:31:38 > 0:31:40but it's very much on for this trio

0:31:40 > 0:31:43and it is William Dunlop now challenging for the lead

0:31:43 > 0:31:45as Michael Dunlop pulls off.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48That looks like a mechanical issue for him.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51And that's not really what we expect.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54Here's Dan Kneen, who started well off row two. The newcomer

0:31:54 > 0:32:00is right up there on time as these two battle for the lead of the race

0:32:00 > 0:32:04on track and William Dunlop almost stands it on the front wheel far too

0:32:04 > 0:32:08deep and McGee will get him back as they get on the gas, or will he?

0:32:08 > 0:32:13He must surely come powering past now. I think he's saved it.

0:32:13 > 0:32:16Michael Dunlop couldn't save that, he's riding it home.

0:32:16 > 0:32:21That is no repeat for him, then. It's McGee, it's Dunlop, it's Sheils.

0:32:23 > 0:32:25So Dunlop lost his place.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28And Dan Kneen is trying to take it.

0:32:28 > 0:32:32The stopwatch says that Dan Kneen from row two, the newcomer,

0:32:32 > 0:32:37remember, on John Burrows' bike, might well be up there on time with

0:32:37 > 0:32:41this trio and right in the mix as they squabble over the lead on track.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44William Dunlop looking back at Derek Sheils.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46It's Derek McGee in front of him.

0:32:49 > 0:32:52McGee. Head down behind the bubble.

0:32:52 > 0:32:56Dunlop, and as they go for the brakes a little bit of squirming there.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02Right and left and away down here, watch the front wheels come

0:33:02 > 0:33:06off the ground now of the superbikes as they unleash all that horsepower.

0:33:06 > 0:33:09Looking for an advantage at the end of the straight.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12William Dunlop has got it on power, the Tyco Suzuki really giving him

0:33:12 > 0:33:14an advantage on the run down the hill.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18All he's got to do is keep it clean and tidy as Derek McGee gets

0:33:18 > 0:33:21it sideways at Gortin and somehow or other picks it up

0:33:21 > 0:33:23and gets it into the corner.

0:33:23 > 0:33:27He got that stopped and turned by some kind of miracle.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31That was really acing it but here is someone else who's acing,

0:33:31 > 0:33:36this is Dan Kneen, who now leads this race on corrected time.

0:33:36 > 0:33:40Will William Dunlop be aware of this when he comes past the pits?

0:33:40 > 0:33:45Will they tell him he's in a race with someone that he cannot see?

0:33:45 > 0:33:48The team will hear it on the tannoy if they can.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51The noise of the track, the bikes so loud in the paddock,

0:33:51 > 0:33:52it's deafening.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Waving at Dunlop there, urging him on, they're trying to tell him

0:33:57 > 0:34:01that he's not actually leading this race even if he thinks he is.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06Well, this is interesting.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09William Dunlop leads Derek McGee, leads Derek Sheils.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14But Dan Kneen ahead of them all on corrected time.

0:34:14 > 0:34:18It's not a big gap either. This is very close racing.

0:34:18 > 0:34:23It could go either way. All William Dunlop leads is good signs,

0:34:23 > 0:34:28this is Dan Kneen, very neat and tidy on the Cookstown/BE Suzuki.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32A John Burrows bike, looking very precise there as he lands it

0:34:32 > 0:34:36and he's very on it as well, Dan Kneen, isn't he?

0:34:36 > 0:34:37Perfect afternoon for racing.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40William Dunlop lands that Suzuki neatly, gets hard on it

0:34:40 > 0:34:44and they're now picking their way through the back of the third wave.

0:34:44 > 0:34:45It's what a racer expects, that the

0:34:45 > 0:34:47guys at the front will catch the guys at the back

0:34:47 > 0:34:51and the idea it might be the other way round, something else again.

0:34:51 > 0:34:52Not really ready for that.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55So Dunlop leads it but he might be getting the news now.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00The pit boys might be telling him he's in a different race.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03He's speeded up. His last lap was 1.24, Kneen's was 1.25.

0:35:03 > 0:35:07It was 1.4 seconds before, it's half a second now.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10Dunlop is closing in, or is he just in cruise control to keep McGee

0:35:10 > 0:35:12and Sheils behind him?

0:35:14 > 0:35:16Kneen knows what he's up to.

0:35:16 > 0:35:21Having the ride of the weekend is Dan Kneen, if you forget the fact that

0:35:21 > 0:35:24Michael Dunlop's got a broken arm for a moment and who can forget that?

0:35:24 > 0:35:28But battle for the podium not what it seems here.

0:35:33 > 0:35:38Past Callum Laidlaw, that will be, number 11 in a moment, goes Dunlop.

0:35:39 > 0:35:44Kneen still needs half a second, less than half a second now.

0:35:44 > 0:35:45The gap between him,

0:35:45 > 0:35:48is this going to be a dream win for William on his first

0:35:48 > 0:35:50ride from Tyco Suzuki? It could be a dream win

0:35:50 > 0:35:53for Manxman Dan Kneen too and for John Burrows.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56We will only find out when Dan Kneen crosses the line.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59Has William Dunlop done enough? He thinks he's done enough.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01He's knows he's won the race on track.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04There's what he thinks is the battle for second

0:36:04 > 0:36:07and third place, but who has won this race actually?

0:36:07 > 0:36:09Derek Sheils almost caught Derek McGee on the line.

0:36:09 > 0:36:12That was for the last podium place, he thought, but here's the man

0:36:12 > 0:36:16coming over the line now. He might have done it and it's

0:36:16 > 0:36:20Dan Kneen by three-tenths of a second from William Dunlop

0:36:20 > 0:36:22with Derek McGee third.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25Dan Kneen might be overwhelmed by that,

0:36:25 > 0:36:29but he was one of a few riders who could see it coming.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32Most of the others had no idea what was happening behind them.

0:36:33 > 0:36:38- How does a newcomer win the Cookstown 100?- Do your homework.

0:36:38 > 0:36:40No, I'd just like to say a big thanks to

0:36:40 > 0:36:42the Cookstown/BE Racing team.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45They've given me the opportunity this year to have a good go at my

0:36:45 > 0:36:49racing and concentrate on it a bit more so it seems to be working out.

0:36:49 > 0:36:54- You took the chequered flag. Did you think you'd won the race?- Yeah.

0:36:54 > 0:36:57I thought I had. Once I got to the front I just kept it steady

0:36:57 > 0:36:59and I was first on the road and I just assumed I'd won the race,

0:36:59 > 0:37:03so I just took it handy - that's the worst thing about it.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05Kicking myself, I can't believe it.

0:37:06 > 0:37:08John, you said to me at the start of the day,

0:37:08 > 0:37:12make sure your commentator mentions my rider, Dan Kneen. My goodness,

0:37:12 > 0:37:14he's going to have to do that now, isn't it?

0:37:14 > 0:37:16I was only winding you up, anyway, Stephen,

0:37:16 > 0:37:19but the problem is Dan has come here as newcomer

0:37:19 > 0:37:21and the qualifying is very difficult.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23He was 11th in the grid and he's come through to win the race.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25It's absolutely amazing.

0:37:25 > 0:37:27MUSIC

0:37:29 > 0:37:33So a Cookstown own team wins the Cookstown 100.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35You don't get any better than that.
