:00:36. > :00:40.Good morning. Welcome to Blue Peter's Big Olympic Tour. We are

:00:40. > :00:46.following the torch around the UK to bring you what you've need to

:00:46. > :00:56.know about the Olympics. We are starting right here, right now, in

:00:56. > :01:13.

:01:13. > :01:23.car Philippe Baku, South Wales. -- I love it here. We have a map and

:01:23. > :01:24.

:01:24. > :01:29.we are not afraid to use it. We are in Caerphilly. Does that happen

:01:30. > :01:36.every time we say the word, Caerphilly? We have an action-

:01:36. > :01:41.packed 30 minutes for you. Here is what is still to come. Coming up

:01:41. > :01:48.today, the Blue Peter Olympic challenge. We take on four famous

:01:48. > :01:55.faces to try to win gold. We will be joined by Steven Redgrave in our

:01:55. > :02:05.super strength test. Have we got an exclusive for you? Check out the

:02:05. > :02:09.

:02:09. > :02:13.first Olympic sketch later in the shirt. -- show. The Olympic flame

:02:13. > :02:19.arrived this week in Lands End. will report on where the torch has

:02:19. > :02:29.been and where it will be going. We will find out where it has been so

:02:29. > :02:33.far and what to expect from our trip in South Wales. Hello and

:02:33. > :02:38.welcome to Caerphilly. Today, the Olympic Torch will be passing

:02:38. > :02:44.through my home town. This week the Olympic Torch travelled from

:02:44. > :02:50.Cornwall, all the way to Cardiff. It arrived on a plane from Greece

:02:50. > :02:55.and touched down in Cornwall. David Beckham lit the ceremonial cauldron.

:02:55. > :03:02.The relay studied its 8000 mile route at Land's End. We have seen

:03:02. > :03:08.it being carried by many heroes and a few famous faces like will.i.am,

:03:09. > :03:18.Didier Drogba and Zara Phillips. It arrived last night in Cardiff. Now

:03:19. > :03:20.

:03:20. > :03:26.for a quick tour off some of my favourite places in the area. I am

:03:26. > :03:31.at a forest which is just outside of Caerphilly. There is a massive

:03:31. > :03:36.bike trail. There is a totem pole in the middle of the Forest. It

:03:36. > :03:45.tells the story of a Welsh explorer who went to America to try to find

:03:45. > :03:52.a tribe who spelt -- spoke Welsh. This memorial is here to remember

:03:52. > :04:02.the 440 men who lost their lives. It was a tragedy in the area. I

:04:02. > :04:05.

:04:05. > :04:12.hope you like what you have seen. See you soon. Brilliant! Here it is

:04:12. > :04:18.James and his crack team of helpers. You made that film yourself. Maybe

:04:18. > :04:27.you could be a world-class Olympian. Are you looking forward to anything

:04:27. > :04:33.in particular? Probably the cycling. Maybe you could introduce a new

:04:33. > :04:41.sport - running with the camera? Maybe. It is pretty expensive.

:04:41. > :04:48.Thank you very much for that. Jordan and Clary, it is fair to say

:04:48. > :04:53.you are pretty excited about the Olympics. Why are you excited?

:04:53. > :04:59.is in the UK and you get to seat all the famous Olympians battling

:04:59. > :05:06.for gold medals and everything. What about you? I am looking

:05:06. > :05:12.forward to seeing the torch go by and the swimming as well. We can

:05:12. > :05:17.actually see where the torch is now. It is on its way to Swansea. If you

:05:17. > :05:23.live nearby, you might recognise that area. It is heading here

:05:23. > :05:28.shortly. We have footage from earlier. You get goose bumps when

:05:28. > :05:36.you see that. It is exciting that it is happening in our country and

:05:36. > :05:41.it is on its way to Caerphilly. Not many people can say they had won

:05:41. > :05:48.five Olympic gold medals but we are very lucky. We have one with us

:05:48. > :05:58.right now. It is the legendary rare and one of Britain's greatest

:05:58. > :06:04.

:06:04. > :06:09.Olympians, says Steve Redgrave. -- Sir. What a great crowd!

:06:09. > :06:14.Olympic fever is gripping the nation. Are you feeling it? I got

:06:14. > :06:20.involved in the bid 12 years ago. It seemed such a long way away and

:06:20. > :06:26.now it is days away. I am sure you remember the year zero Macro with

:06:26. > :06:34.fond memories when you travel to the other side of the world. --

:06:34. > :06:37.2000. So Sydney was the host of the summer Olympics and it was hot

:06:37. > :06:43.competition. They have gone down in history as one of the best modern

:06:43. > :06:50.Olympics to date. Not only for sporting achievements but also

:06:50. > :06:54.flair and style. At first no one could believe that Sir Steve

:06:54. > :06:59.Redgrave was competing. After winning his 4th Olympic gold in

:06:59. > :07:07.Atlanta, he said this. If anyone sees me going anywhere near a boat,

:07:07. > :07:15.you have my permission to shoot me. He was diagnosed with did --

:07:15. > :07:21.diabetes. Despite that, he still got in the water. Watch out for

:07:21. > :07:26.Italy! Great Britain on the line. Great Britain get the gold medal.

:07:26. > :07:36.There after winning five gold medals, starting back in 1984, and

:07:36. > :07:36.

:07:36. > :07:45.finishing in the year 2000, says Steve Redgrave really is a great

:07:45. > :07:52.Olympian. -- Sir. That is because you are a legend. That is one of

:07:52. > :07:57.those iconic moments. Do you ever tire of saying that? It does not

:07:57. > :08:05.feel that long ago. It is 12 years ago. It was my oldest and youngest

:08:05. > :08:09.in that shot. My eldest is 21 and my youngest is 14. You are not just

:08:09. > :08:15.top of your game but top of your game for so many years. We would

:08:15. > :08:20.like to say we think you are incredible. We give an award a way

:08:20. > :08:26.to very special people and that is the gold Blue Peter badge. We would

:08:26. > :08:35.like to present you with your very own gold Blue Peter badge. That is

:08:35. > :08:39.very special - a very special indeed. Should it not be five?

:08:39. > :08:45.are all going nuts about the Olympics but how will the athletes

:08:45. > :08:50.be feeling? A lot of them still need to qualify to get to the Games.

:08:50. > :08:54.Jessica Ennis is competing this weekend. Her selection has been

:08:54. > :09:01.finalised but it is a very important weekend for her. It is

:09:01. > :09:06.the rowing world Cup this weekend. Today is the semi-finals today and

:09:06. > :09:10.tomorrow is the finals. Most selection is about four to six

:09:10. > :09:18.weeks before the Games. A lot of people think they're going but it

:09:18. > :09:23.will not be rubber-stamped before the time. They will be feeling the

:09:23. > :09:28.pressure. We will test your strength later. Each week we will

:09:28. > :09:32.get an insider's guide to an Olympic event. We will be speaking

:09:32. > :09:42.to Andy Murray about 10 s and Beth Tweddell will be giving us the low-

:09:42. > :09:54.

:09:54. > :10:04.High, I and Dai Greene, and this is your be Peter guide to the Olympic

:10:04. > :10:04.

:10:04. > :10:14.hurdles. Dai Greene is a Commonwealth and European gold

:10:14. > :10:14.

:10:15. > :10:24.medal hurdler. The Olympic hurdles events are 100 metres for women,

:10:25. > :10:25.

:10:25. > :10:29.110 metres for men. And 400 metres for both. It is not just Dai Greene

:10:29. > :10:39.who has set his sights on goal. They have a number of medal

:10:39. > :10:41.

:10:41. > :10:46.hopefuls with Andy Turner and Perry shakes Drayton. Just before the

:10:47. > :10:52.race starts, you are waiting for the command to go on your marks.

:10:52. > :10:59.Everyone is looking at you. Silence descends on the stadium. When the

:10:59. > :11:06.gun goes, I think, ran as fast as you can. Sprint the first 100

:11:06. > :11:09.metres. After that it is executing my race plan. You cross the line

:11:09. > :11:18.first and you realise you have achieved the goal you have set out

:11:19. > :11:24.to do. It is an amazing sensation. It is about 160 strides and a need

:11:24. > :11:30.to be spot on. If I am 30 centimetres away from my take-off

:11:30. > :11:40.point, it seriously affects my race. I've finished 7th in the World

:11:40. > :11:41.

:11:41. > :11:50.Championship final. When I was a younger, my main love was football.

:11:50. > :11:55.I grew up idealising Ryan Giggs. I've taught myself to use my left

:11:56. > :12:01.foot just to be like him. I could hurdle off both legs because of

:12:01. > :12:08.this. That separates me from other guys in the world at the moment. It

:12:08. > :12:14.is all thanks to Ryan Giggs. I found out I had epilepsy when I was

:12:14. > :12:22.17. It was not easy. I had good friends and family around me. I

:12:22. > :12:27.would never let it dominate my life or limit me in my aspirations all

:12:27. > :12:33.dreams. My biggest threat will be coming from the Americans. They

:12:33. > :12:42.took gold, silver and bronze at the last Olympics. Aynho I will have to

:12:42. > :12:52.run something fantastic to beat them on the day. -- I know of. If I

:12:52. > :12:57.

:12:57. > :13:02.give 100%, hopefully that will be enough. That was Dai Greene. This

:13:03. > :13:09.is still to come. Which sporting celebrity be cheering in the

:13:09. > :13:17.hurdling challenge? Watch out for the Horrible Histories sketch!

:13:17. > :13:22.so bad at the hurdles. I am now in the rest of the park. When you come

:13:22. > :13:27.here after 10 o'clock, there are loads of activities you can do.

:13:27. > :13:32.This is the Wellcome Trust tent. It is a great machine you can have a

:13:32. > :13:37.go on. It is showing the sequence of what happens when you jump. We

:13:37. > :13:47.will wait for the system to restart and then I will have a go to a

:13:47. > :13:53.

:13:53. > :13:58.right to see if says Steve Redgrave If you're watching this at home,

:13:58. > :14:06.join in. Once you've got your countdown, you jump into the air

:14:06. > :14:11.using as much force as you can. Try that at home. It will show what

:14:11. > :14:17.I've achieved. It is also a slow- motion. You are looking for the

:14:17. > :14:25.peak in that little read out. Sir Steve will have a go. He is an

:14:25. > :14:29.Olympian. Let's see what happens. It is monstrous! That was nearly

:14:29. > :14:34.off the charts. Your feet almost disappeared. You then move on to

:14:34. > :14:41.your next part of the tent. This is brilliant. When you're an athlete,

:14:41. > :14:46.you have to think about all parts of your body. This is an infra-red

:14:46. > :14:54.scanner that you can place your hand on. It shows the veins in your

:14:54. > :14:59.hands. It shows how the blood is being transported around the body.

:14:59. > :15:04.The blood gets pumped full of oxygen and it heads to your muscles.

:15:04. > :15:08.You can take pictures of this to show your grandma. There are loads

:15:08. > :15:12.more things you can do in here. Make sure you come along and try it.

:15:12. > :15:17.A beautiful day down here so come down and say hello. You can see the

:15:18. > :15:23.sport behind the science. Horrible histories fans, this is the moment

:15:23. > :15:27.you have been waiting for. We have got a series of exclusive sporting

:15:27. > :15:37.sketches all about the ancient Games and the first on describes

:15:37. > :15:40.

:15:40. > :15:43.how the marathon really began. -- It's for 90 BC, you join us in

:15:43. > :15:50.ancient Greece for what should be a memorable long distance runner.

:15:50. > :15:57.course starts right here. Can you keep the noise down? This as a live

:15:57. > :16:00.broadcast. Thanks. The course starts right here at the Battle of

:16:00. > :16:05.Marathon where the Athenian troops looks set to win an unexpected

:16:05. > :16:09.victory against the massed ranks of the Persian army. This is the first

:16:09. > :16:13.time a 25 mile distance has been run. We should really give it a

:16:13. > :16:18.name. That's right. The course runs from Marathon to Athens so we

:16:18. > :16:25.should obviously call it an Athens. Although this is the Battle of

:16:25. > :16:31.Marathon. You are right. Let's call it battle. Unbelievable. I'm off to

:16:31. > :16:39.talk about the favourite. He hello, what do you think your chances of

:16:39. > :16:43.winning are? Pretty good, feeling confident. Can you remind us why

:16:43. > :16:47.you were running to Athens? To take the message back home that we have

:16:47. > :16:51.beaten the Persians. The race hasn't begun yet and I can't help

:16:51. > :16:56.but notice that you seem a little bit out of breath already. Over the

:16:56. > :17:01.last couple of days I've done 150 miles training run to spotter and

:17:01. > :17:05.back to ask for their help. Wow. Have you got enough in the tank for

:17:05. > :17:12.another 25 miles? There's only one way to find out, wish me luck.

:17:12. > :17:16.they're off. Wish me luck. Good luck. Thank you. And they are off!

:17:16. > :17:20.He makes a great start in first and last place. Can't wait to see what

:17:20. > :17:25.happens at the finish line. This is the first time the course has been

:17:25. > :17:29.run and what a challenging course it is. He really has a mountain to

:17:29. > :17:34.climb. A big hill, anyway! The route ends with a steep climb into

:17:34. > :17:38.Athens. That is going to be a real challenge in the heat of the Sun.

:17:38. > :17:44.Athenian athletes faded but he is about to finish the first ever 25

:17:44. > :17:51.mile marathon run. Call it Marathon, that is a great name. Really? Here

:17:51. > :17:57.he comes. The poor boy looks exhausted. People of Athens, we

:17:57. > :18:01.have won a great victory. I think he's dead. That will make the post-

:18:01. > :18:09.race interview very, very difficult indeed. It has been such a great

:18:09. > :18:19.race. The crowd has been amazing. Give everything. Is he all right?

:18:19. > :18:26.

:18:26. > :18:30.You can see more new sketches later this summer. The Olympics is all

:18:30. > :18:36.about testing physical ability and one part of that his drink. Each

:18:36. > :18:40.week we are going to test the muscles of a celebrity guest.

:18:40. > :18:46.pressure is on. Who thinks Sir Steve Redgrave is one big lump of

:18:46. > :18:51.muscle. That was the mums! You will now prove it by hitting that as

:18:51. > :18:55.hard as you can. The idea is to make it go up and hit the bell. You

:18:55. > :19:02.are the first person to do this. You are setting the standard.

:19:02. > :19:12.will definitely be in the lead! Let's give him a countdown.

:19:12. > :19:14.

:19:14. > :19:17.That is how you do it. There's a slight mishap. This is also the

:19:17. > :19:27.leaderboard and there's no way I can reach that high. Would you

:19:27. > :19:28.

:19:28. > :19:31.stick your face right at the top? People know where to aim. Now it is

:19:31. > :19:37.time for the first of our Blue Peter Olympic challenges. We got

:19:37. > :19:44.together four celebrities and set out to find Blue Peter's ultimate

:19:44. > :19:48.athlete. Over the next nine weeks you'll see our own mini Olympics.

:19:48. > :19:51.We will be put through our paces and one of us will be at the top of

:19:51. > :20:00.the paid him and one will be in the changing room feeling sorry for

:20:00. > :20:04.ourselves. It is time to hand over Welcome to the Blue Peter bid

:20:04. > :20:08.Olympic challenge. This is where Helen, Barney and four celebrity

:20:08. > :20:13.friends will be competing in nine Olympic sports. On the track, in

:20:13. > :20:21.the pool and on the court. They will be tested to the max. Who will

:20:21. > :20:31.be setting the pace? This is the Sopranos singing sensation law

:20:31. > :20:32.

:20:32. > :20:40.right. King of the strictly dance floor, Brendan Cole. No problem.

:20:40. > :20:46.Former Ennerdale actress Adil silver. -- Ennerdale. The MC and

:20:46. > :20:54.reality TV star Romeo. Not forgetting of course the Queen of

:20:54. > :21:04.Blue Peter, Helen Skelton. And the final athlete, our very own Barney

:21:04. > :21:05.

:21:05. > :21:10.Athletes, this is what it is all about. I have with me for medals.

:21:10. > :21:14.It is bronze, silver and gold. Over nine weeks, you will be competing.

:21:14. > :21:19.Points will be on offer and three of you will walk away with one of

:21:19. > :21:24.these. The ultimate is the gold. How are you feeling? Terrified.

:21:24. > :21:27.clues are behind you. Our first event is sprint hurdles. You will

:21:27. > :21:32.need an explosive start, lightning speed and serious amounts of

:21:32. > :21:39.agility. We're not just going to throw you in there. Please welcome

:21:39. > :21:46.UK Athletics hurdling coach Roger Devlin. What makes a good hurdler?

:21:46. > :21:49.First thing, courage. Second thing, Speed. Third thing, mobility. We

:21:49. > :21:55.will go inside in a minute and we will show you how to run over

:21:55. > :22:01.hurdles and not jump over them. you get it wrong, it can hurt. Good

:22:01. > :22:05.motivational speech! That the secret. They are all yours. I fear

:22:05. > :22:13.for Roger, he has got just one hour to get this lot in touch -- tip-top

:22:13. > :22:18.shape. The step pattern for Adele is a little bit like a pigeon!

:22:18. > :22:26.have to do three strides between each thing. I estimated mind at

:22:26. > :22:33.about 9 1/2. I think Romeo is hiding his eyes. It is not sunny in

:22:33. > :22:36.here. I think that is because he is fiercely watching everybody else.

:22:36. > :22:42.Are you psyching out the opposition? It is just an early

:22:42. > :22:48.morning. I had about three hours' sleep. They may not be admitting it,

:22:48. > :22:51.but everyone is taking the chance to check out their rivals. They

:22:52. > :22:58.always have these amazing legs that go on forever. They can just walk

:22:58. > :23:08.over it! Brendan is insanely good. I suppose he is not dancing over

:23:08. > :23:09.

:23:09. > :23:19.them. The others are worried about Roger has shown you the way. We

:23:19. > :23:29.

:23:29. > :23:33.will now see an expert. Go wild for We have two races for you, and

:23:33. > :23:38.men's race and the women's race. All that separates them from glory

:23:38. > :23:43.is 60 metres and five hurdles. This is the height for the women. 69

:23:43. > :23:52.centimetres. For the men, 84 centimetres. To give you an idea of

:23:52. > :23:57.how hard it is for the prose, this is over a metre high. You go 9.14

:23:57. > :24:01.metres to hurdle number two, then three... And then an almighty

:24:01. > :24:11.sprint to the finish line. Let's handover to the commentator,

:24:11. > :24:13.

:24:13. > :24:21.way. Helen Skelton looks incredibly focused. As stars and Dell. Watch

:24:21. > :24:28.out for Laura on the outside. Pretty even to the first hurdle.

:24:28. > :24:34.Laura has a big lead already. Look at that technique. Helen is looking

:24:34. > :24:39.at second place. Lawro wins by a mile! Who finishes second? Helen.

:24:39. > :24:42.And Del really struggling for any rhythm and length of stride. Laura

:24:42. > :24:44.rhythm and length of stride. Laura made it look very easy. They may be

:24:44. > :24:48.hugging now, but I wonder if they hugging now, but I wonder if they

:24:48. > :24:52.will do that as the competition progresses. Over to the men.

:24:52. > :24:58.Brendan Cole looks supremely confident, he is the man to beat

:24:58. > :25:03.with his dancing feet. But the hurdles can trip up anyway. I'm not

:25:03. > :25:07.sure if Romeo can see through those shades! Does Barney have fear of

:25:07. > :25:13.confidence in his eyes? A very even start. It is between Romeo and

:25:13. > :25:18.Brendan. Brendan lengthening his stride pattern. He takes it very

:25:18. > :25:24.comfortable -- comfortably. Barney did not get started, coming in in

:25:24. > :25:29.third place. It was that second hurdle where Romeo really tripped

:25:29. > :25:31.up. Comfortable for Brendan. The cheeky glance behind him because

:25:31. > :25:36.cheeky glance behind him because the others were bus-ride away and

:25:36. > :25:43.he knew it. Congratulations, that was brilliant. You have completed

:25:43. > :25:46.the first step. Shall we do the.? After the first event, one point,

:25:46. > :25:56.Barney and the Dell. Finishing second with two points, Romeo and
